Moving On From The Referendum

Words: Adam Moynihan

It’s finally time to move on from this pesky referendum, although I suppose that’s easier for me to say as a Yes voter. There are sure to be plenty of people who will feel angry or upset, and those feelings aren’t going to disappear overnight just because the other side won. Beliefs on this topic are too strong to be cast aside just like that. Having said that, the law is going to be changed and all of us, Yes, No or Other,

will have to live with it together. There was definitely some animosity during the debate but now that the referendum is over, hopefully we can look to the future and maybe build some bridges with those around us. I think the margin of victory is a good thing in this regard. If it was closer, the whole thorny issue would continue to rumble on and be even more contentious in a way. The turnout was the third highest ever for a referendum

and with two out of every three in favour of repeal, it’s clear how the majority of Irish people felt. As expected, turnout and the number of Yes votes were higher in and around the capital but Kerry’s turnout of 62.4% was decent considering how rural we are. At 58%, we were the 7th lowest in terms of people voting Yes but the victory was still fairly comfortable. The political fallout is one of the more interesting aspects of the entire situa-

tion. How will Fianna Fáil, the only political party to vote No, fare in the next general election? Especially among the newly mobilised young voters. It will be interesting to see. Here in Kerry, meanwhile, the majority of TDs and councillors promoted a No vote. Can they now claim to represent the people when the people have shown that they fundamentally disagree with them on something so important?

Referendum Coverage

A Matter Of Opinion Over the course of our referendum coverage, one or two people questioned the neutrality of the Killarney Advertiser. It was suggested that because Anne Lucey and I were pro-choice, our coverage was somehow unfair or unbalanced. The Killarney Advertiser is completely impartial and throughout the campaign provided a platform to both sides to present their arguments. It just so happened that I, personally, was in favour of a Yes vote. As acting editor, it’s part of my job to address major issues and give my personal opinion. And that’s exactly what it is: a personal opinion.

Words: Adam Moynihan

And anyway, I would say that apart from my piece in our Eighth Amendment feature where I explained why I was voting Yes, my writing on the subject was actually quite balanced. Anne Lucey has been a long-time contributor the magazine and the fact that she was also pro-choice was purely coincidental. If she happened to be prolife, her articles would still have been published as frequently and given as much prominence because she is a good journalist. We actively sought and printed letters and responses from those on the No side throughout the build-up

to the referendum, and were happy to do so. Any suggestion that the Killarney Advertiser was showing bias one way or the other is off the mark and I think the people making that kind of suggestion were possibly being influenced by their own bias. Thankfully, it was only a tiny minority who felt that way. I will continue to give my honest opinion on this page and the Killarney Advertiser will continue to offer a forum for everyone to contribute to debate. As always, we welcome our readers’ input. To get in touch, email me newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie. I look forward to hearing from you.

New Plans Unveiled For New Street, Finan’s, Áras & Car Parks The Killarney Municipal District has unveiled a draft local area plan for the next six years and there are some interesting developments on the cards for the likes of New Street, St Finan’s and the Áras Phádraig. There are also plans in place to tackle the traffic and parking issues plaguing the town. The plan has set out 20 objectives in total in the categories of Residential Development, Opportunity Sites/Regeneration, Arts, Heritage and Culture, and Roads/Infrastructure. A period of pre draft public consultation ran from December 8, 2016 to January 26, 2017 during which the public were invited to make submissions/observations. It is hoped to facilitate the development of 685 residential units within the settlement boundary, and particular mention is made to New Street which has been identified as an area where residential regeneration is necessary. “A residential regeneration area contains vacant properties that can be brought back into use as new homes,” the plan states. “It is proposed that any vacant commercial units within these predominant residential areas be converted to residential use.” The disused St Finan’s Hospital and adjacent grounds have long been slated for redevelopment and this extensive draft plan also lays out aims for the iconic site. The goal, according to the Municipal District, is “to sustainably preserve and develop this large landmark building and associated brownfield site as a new mixed use urban area in order to ensure a sustainable urban extension to existing facilities and infrastructure.” “Any future development will need to protect and enhance the existing character and views of the hospital building,” the plan continues. “The site has potential for significant mixed use development, including a cultural/tourist use. “Development on the site should incorporate a strong social and community element which reflects the historic use of the site particularly with respect to improvements to the public realm and the development of civic amenity. In line with this 30% of the

Our artist’s impression of the new Áras Phádraig, which was proposed in this publication last year.

total site shall be set aside for social/community use.” The old Áras Phádraig, located close to the town centre, has been another bone of contention for the people of Killarney for years and here at the Killarney Advertiser we have called for the redevelopment of the area as a civic plaza (see artist’s impression). Officials now say the aim for this site is to sustainably re-develop it as a mixed cultural/heritage/community use with associated car-parking provisions. We are pleased to hear that this is now the official plan and we look forward to seeing how the project progresses. It’s no secret that traffic and parking are major problems in the town and the draft plan outlines a number of objectives to tackle these issues, such as implementing traffic management measures, providing bus set-down areas/shelters and bicycle parking, creating more cycle lanes and providing car parks at

suitable locations on approach roads throughout the town. The latter is likely to come as a bit of a surprise to locals, some of whom have expressed their view that additional parking is required in the town centre itself. Kerry County Council has a statutory obligation to secure the implementation of the objectives of the Killarney Municipal District Local Area Plan. The plan itself can be viewed online in the planning section of the Kerry County Council website (www.kerrycoco. ie).Submissions are currently being accepted and will be taken up until June 15.

What do you think of the objectives outlined in the new plan? What are your ideas? Let us know via newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

Kerry’s First Live Escape Rooms Open In Killarney

4-Year-Old Liam Raises Funds For KDYS

Charity

4-year-old Liam Leahy from Kilcummin in Killarney has really gone the extra mile (or kilometre) to help all young people from Kerry. So far he has raised €125 for #teamKDYS in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Liam is asking for more support as he wants to raise over €400! Liam, with a little help from his dad Patrick, who is a well-known jarvey in Killarney, signed up to support #teamKDYS but he needs to wait a few more years until he can cycle the Ring. That didn’t stop the amazing young man from helping out. Mr Tim O Donoghue (CEO) said: “We were quite simply blown away when we heard about Liam’s efforts and we are so grateful to him and Patrick for their wonderful support. Despite all the challenges facing young people today, KDYS is committed to Building Futures for all young people in Kerry. To see a young person want to do something and to help is really fantastic. We want to say a huge thank you to Liam and Patrick and to everyone who has contributed so far.” Liam’s dad Patrick explained how it came about. “Liam saw the KDYS poster and

asked me what it was about, and who was KDYS. I told him about the cycle and that KDYS help young people. He said, ‘I’m a young person… I want to help too’. I contacted KDYS for Liam and it went from there. They do great work and need support. It was great to learn that people can help without cycling.” Anyone who wants to help can do so by donating to Liam Leahy’s #teamKDYS page on Everyday Hero, by dropping into KDYS in Fairhill in Killarney and adding to Liam’s sponsorship card there, or by contacting KDYS on 064 6631748. KDYS are asking cyclists to sing up to #teamKDYS and cycle to support Kerry’s youth. KDYS provide support in a number of areas, including active and healthy living, personal development, arts and creativity, eating well and nutrition, helping transition from primary to secondary school, mentoring, preparing for the workplace of tomorrow, team-building and leadership, mental and spiritual well-being, being resilient and dealing with anxiety, digital and online safety, and learning skills for future employment.

Escape Killarney, Kerry’s first live escape game, has opened its doors down Bohereencael Glebe. The novel indoor activity, which is the brainchild of local pair Frank Ryan and Philip O’Connor, challenges groups of 2-6 people to solve a series of clues and get out of a room before time runs out. It’s a real test of cleverness and teamwork but, most importantly, it’s tremendously good fun. “You get locked into a room for 60 minutes (or less if you can get out beforehand),” Philip explains. “You have to solve clues, and puzzles and ciphers to try and find your way out. Hopefully you’ll have a bit of fun along the way. “The reaction so far has been really positive. We can see and hear everything while people are in there and they seem to be having a good

few laughs. There are a few arguments over codes and things like that alright! But it’s all about teamwork and working together. What’s actually in the rooms and what the games entail are shrouded in secrecy. At the moment, Escape Killarney has one room with another being prepared to open in the next couple of weeks. “You can only do each room once really because when you know the answers, you know the answers,” Philip said. “The transient tourist market will be our recurring business, but hopefully all the locals will come down and check it out and give us a go.” To check out Killarney’s newest and most exciting activity, visit escapekillarney.ie. Successful Rás For Killarney Riders

The Killarney team had a fantastic and very successful Rás Tailteann which they took part in from May 20-28. All of the Team, which was made up by Marcus Treacy, Patrick Clifford, Richard Maes, John Brosnan and Conor Kissane, finished the eight-day professional race around Ireland. Killarney were the only domestic team to finish with all five riders which in itself is a huge success. Competitors have said that Rás Tailteann would not have been possible for the team without the fantastic support of Team Manager Joe O’ Shea, Mike Kissane, Billy Reidy, Stephen Daly and Tomás Mac an tSaoir. “A huge thank you to all of the individuals and businesses for their support for the team,” said Marcus Treacy, “and to all of those who took time to come out and cheer on the team when the race passed through Killarney.” Well done to the lads from everyone at the Killarney Advertiser.

A strong sense of optimism was evident in the more than 30 new business owners gathered in the KDYS in Killarney last Thursday night as part of a Networking Event organised by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG. The event is organised through the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance Programme which is run by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection and operated in the region by SKDP. Amongst the new entrepreneurs who displayed their products at the event were goldsmith Patrick Finnegan, Michael Lynch of Simply Fun Events and The Busy Botanists Clair Kelly and Jo Arbon. Welcoming everyone to the event, SKDP’s Enterprise & Employment Officer Orfhlaith O’Donoghue congratulated all of those present on taking the major step of starting their own business and wished them every success in the future. Addressing the gathering Heidi Grimwood of the Digital Marketing Agency pointed out the need to engage in the traditional marketing such as networking and personal contact as well as with newer methods such as online advertising. She said that while

proper digital marketing is a hugely important component of any business success, there is still the need to ensure that one engages in face to face interactions with the customers also. Case Officer with INTREO Micheal Kenneally outlined the many support opportunities that exist for the start-up businesses through the BTWEA and encouraged all of those present to avail of them as needed. The group was also addressed by Seán de Buitléar of SKDP around the LEADER Programme and the potential grant supports available to them under the enterprise measure of the programme. Clair Kelly and Jo Arbon, who have their business up and running for more than a year now, highlighted some of the issues they faced in the start-up phase including the need to continue to ensure they got everything done and the fact that it was like a rollercoaster in terms of highs and lows. They were, however, hugely positive and encouraged all in attendance to continue with their vision and goals. The new business owners also had the chance to mingle with each other, share experiences and develop new links.

Cathal Launches EP At Acoustic Club If last Friday’s performance in the INEC Acoustic Club is anything to go by, Killarney’s singer/songwriter scene is in a very healthy state. With support on the night coming from Tom Lucey, an acclaimed singer/songwriter in his own right who has headlined this venue quite a few times before, Cathal Flaherty took to the stage to a rapturous applause from the packed INEC Acoustic Club audience. He started solo with a gorgeous unreleased number Next To Me before continuing on solo through new songs and indeed old songs from his last EP Lost & Found. Cathal moved from his trusty guitar to the piano for the mesmerising Make It Out Alive, telling the audience it was his first time playing piano in a live scenario. He was then joined on Weight Of The World by local fiddle virtuoso Brendan O’Sullivan, who arrived to play some of the most haunting fiddle parts you will ever hear. This proved to be a great addition to the sound and re-

ally added to the already impressive performance. Your Best Friend and Two Hearts from the new EP followed with Cathal ending up finishing the gig in the middle of the crowd, singing Two Hearts completely acapella with the adoring crowd. Calls for an encore came immediately and Cathal did not disappoint, arriving onstage to kick things off again with current single, Grow. He was again joined by Brendan and also on piano by 18-year-old Donal Lucey who did a fantastic job. The crowd erupted when Cathal informed them that the new EP, having just been released that day, was currently No. 5 in the charts, a massive achievement for the local artist. Finishing with his debut single A Thousand Miles and a well-deserved standing ovation, Cathal’s attention now turns to his headline gig in Whelan’s this Sunday and if it’s anything like this display the Dubs are in for a real treat!

Front: Micheal Kenneally (Case Officer-INTREO), Jo Arbon (The Busy Botanist), Orfhlaith O’ Donoghue (Enterprise & Employment Officer, SKDP), Clair Kelly (The Busy Botanist) and Heidi Grimwood (TOA Digital Marketing Agency). Back: Patrick Finnegan (Patrick Finnegan Goldsmith), Helen Courtney Power (Business Development Officer –Killarney Credit Union Ltd), Frances Kelleher (Frances Kelleher Coaching), Anne O’ Riordan (Enterprise Officer, SKDP) and Michael Lynch (Simply Fun Events).

Award Congratulations to Ceara Scanlon of the INEC who took home the Best Large Business gong at the Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel. The Connect Awards honour women in business for the terrific work they do in the county.

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Was This Result A Birth, Or Was It A Death? So, how now? A few things died in the opening of the ballot boxes last Saturday morning. A few of the old myths were exposed, raising their heads, briefly, the light shining on them, and just as quickly put to rest. The extent of the Yes vote took everyone by surprise. If around 80 per cent of Killarney voted to put in the amendment in in ’83, almost as many voted to take it out 35 years later. There are attempts to cast doubt: I saw No stalwart Paul Coghlan question voter security. He sounded cautions to me at the count centre that the size of the majority will not guarantee an easy passage of the legislation which, he said, will have to be “teased out”. There can be no doubting the three to one shift nationally. For the likes of myself who was in the minority in South Kerry in 1983, the shift is monumental, extraordinary. I could not have envisaged it. The No Posters far outweighed the Yes on the N22 and the No were louder, more reactionary and, dare I say it, more aggressive. Theirs was a more “in your face” campaign. A few of the Nos at the count centre in Killarney had to be spoken to by security. One woman had a right go at me, casting complete calumny. Others got it in the neck too. I have rarely encountered this strategy of personal attacks in decades of watching politics. It would not be tolerated in most organisations. The rural-urban divide never materialised, not even in Kerry. Glenflesk was the only Killarney area booth to return a No. But someone said this was because of the quality of the preaching of the parish priest there. The rural boxes were just as staunch in their majority Yes as the urban. Men voted Yes. Older women voted Yes. Parents voted Yes. Think about this: most of the polling stations were in schools where much class time is devoted to prayers and Communion practice in May, and in March and April there is Confirmation practice. The polling booths are where religious (Catholic) pictures line the walls. Yet people still went in and voted Yes. The shock on the faces of the No campaign was visible in Killarney last Saturday. The Catholic Church’s overt influence (and I use the word advisedly - if you need that job as a teacher, or a school principal, even a post-primary school principal you are still beholden to the Bishop or the priest) has waned. Catholicism is no longer a defining feature of being Irish and gone is the day when Irish and Catholic were so synonymous you were surprised if a Protestant person, or a Jewish person, called themselves Irish. People are adopting, as they are in most mature countries, a pick and mix attitude. I suggest that religion, which is a public, communal thing, has become what it most naturally is: tradition. Irish Catholicism is a way of marking rites of passage. The spiritual side is something apart from that, and there too is the pick and mix attitude of the Bible, sacraments, yoga, and meditation. But just as intriguing was the clearly diminishing influence of the local TD. Michael Healy-Rae came into the count centre when it was all over, the counted votes were taken to the holding centre in Cork and the returning officer was gone home. He had been holding clinics, he said. I asked him if he was out of sync or tune with the electorate and he said he was in tune with 42

per cent of them. As to the campaigning, well, he maintained, he only offered an opinion when he was asked. He was probably confused after his day of clinics, which is what delayed him coming to the count centre. So I reminded him of all the posters around Kenmare and Kilgarvan he was seen putting up. (Actually Michael is also on a video clip with “the lovely town of Killarney” in the background for the No campaign. I hadn’t known it then. He and his son, Jackie, the parliamentary secretary, were active with tweets.) But, to give him is due, on the scale of the Healy-Raes’ all-out effort when it comes to campaigns, this activity was probably only dipping their toes in the water. At any rate, either way, Michael Healy-Rae was not effective. He was not listened to either in Bonane or his own village of Kilgarvan or Kenmare. His brother was not listened to. Neither was John Brassil or Mark Daly, Cllr Michael Cahill or all the other “brave” men. Brendan Griffin can take no credit for simply cutely sitting on the fence with a leg on either side. Only Martin Ferris, Sinn Féin and Senator Ned Sullivan Fianna Fáil nailed their colours to the Yes side and both were at the count centre for much of the day. So what

does this tell us about politics? And who has moral authority now? Who will enter the vacuum? We are at a fork in the road, I would suggest. The last time there was such a fork in the road was again in the 1980s. You had two emerging political philosophies: the Greens and the Progressive Democrats. The PDs arrived in a storm of cleaning up corruption, capturing our imagination. But the underbelly of individualistic, naked ambition, nearer Boston than Berlin philosophy, won out. Much of it was a disaster for this country. Under the PD drive, our old universities followed the new NIHEs and were turned into factories for degrees, their old term times and methods changed. They became mass places of work and hedonism with no time or even room for thinking or debating and everyone got a degree. And I question to this day the kind of ethics taught. Ireland itself was turned into a 24/7 factory. The Greens are still around and their quiet philosophy has not only endured but prevailed globally. While commentators like Fintan O’Toole say the result is a simple reversal, it is not. The minority beaten down in 1983, and viciously attacked, was an emerging minority, that of the new Ireland. The minority which was beaten now is a receding minority, that of the old, power encrusted, fossilised Ireland. And while it will not go away and may always have undue voice and influence, it is receding. There was a lot to tell in that vote the last day. But, like TS Eliot in the Journey of the Magi, was it a birth or was it a death?

Pres Girls Celebrate Achievements At Awards Night The students of St Brigid’s Secondary School celebrated their annual award ceremony last week in the school gym, which was packed to capacity with parents, students and staff. The audience was entertained by wonderful music and singing from the choir and music students including an amazing solo by Ora Mordant. Guest of honour was Moira Murrell, past pupil and CEO of Kerry County Council, who addressed the audience with her memories of the time she spent in St Brigid’s, emphasising the importance of education. She also encouraged the students to return and settle in Kerry after they have travelled the world, reminding them that there are wonderful job opportunities in the county. This year was the fourth year of the Ceist Award which is presented to students in 107 Ceist schools around the country. The award is a perpetual trophy and is awarded after a process of teacher nominations to a 6th year student who best reflects the core values of Ceist, namely promoting spiritual and human development, achieving quality in learning, showing respect for

A special award was presented by Tom Tobin and Anthony O’Connor from Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club to Emma Quirke in recognition of her incredible contribution to Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club at the Castlerosse swimming club every Friday night. Following the presentation of most of the awards, a 6th year slide-show prepared by Mr Hughes entertained a captive audience. Principle Ms Moore then addressed the audience and congratulated each and every student on their contribution to the school in the past year. She also made special mention of those who work quietly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of St Brigid’s, with special mention of the office staff, canteen staff and the caretakers Kevin and Tim. The final award was the Orla Benson Memorial Award. Orla was a past pupil who died tragically in 1995. Since 1997 her family generously sponsor a bursary in her memory. Aaron Benson, Orla’s brother, presented the award to Ciara Carroll who received a standing ovation from both students and staff.

Business Of The Week Slimming World Group Achieves Flagship Status A weight-loss expert in Killarney has won an award for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 200 people to lose weight at her local Slimming World groups. Sorcha, who runs the Tuesday and Thursday Slimming World groups every week, has achieved Flagship status because of her success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight and in recognition of the super service she provides to those members. The accolade is given to Slimming World consultants who support large numbers and who provide such exceptional service that members come back week after week. These members are losing weight beautifully and wouldn’t miss their weekly group for anything. It represents one of the highest levels of service in slimming and means Killarney is home to one of the best Slimming World Consultants in Ireland. “I am delighted to have received the ‘Flagship’ award,” Sorcha says. “I absolutely love my job and I think this is a wonderful honour to receive. I adore seeing my members every week and couldn’t think of a better position to be in. We help people to shed the misery of excess weight so that they can discover the real them inside and become the person that they always dreamed of being. It’s not just about looking different though, it’s about feeling happier, healthier and more confident too.

Seeing that transformation in people is what I love most about my job and I’m passionate about helping and supporting my members to change their lives by losing weight. “I’m the face of the Tuesday and Thursday Slimming World groups, but I’ll be sharing this award with our many members. They’re the ones who make the

group the success it is, with their fabulous commitment, the wonderful support they give each other every week, and, above all, their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. They make the group a fun, exciting place to be and I can safely say I always look forward to going to work. “The group has really put healthy weight loss on the map in Killarney. Together, members have lost an amazing 135 stone this month alone. Obesity is at record levels everywhere and with 57 per cent of adults in Killarney being affected, many people are suffering a range of weight-related health problems from diabetes to heart problems and feelings of low self-worth, things that impact on their working and personal lives every day. Struggling with being overweight affects so many of us and has an impact on our health and happiness. It’s never been more important for people to get support to make the changes needed to lead healthier lives for the good of the whole community.”

Groups are Tuesdays in The Brehon at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm or Thursdays in the Plaza Hotel at 9.30am or 11.30am. Pop along or give Sorcha a call on 086 8423317.

A record 5,500 volunteers took part in the Kerry County Clean-up last month which saw 8,000 bags of litter collected, the highest ever tally in the seven years in which the environmental and community initiative has existed. KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council have completed an analysis of the litter collected which revealed that single-use drinking containers were the most common item of litter retrieved from locations across the county, followed by sweet/chocolate wrappers. This year’s County Clean-up took place on Saturday, April 14, and the largest ever number of volunteers took part, as Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Sheahan explained: “The growing success of the initiative since it was established in 2012 is evident in the huge voluntary effort all over Kerry and the volume of litter retrieved is indicative of the larger numbers taking part. We need to continue to harness this voluntary spirit and ensure that more people take part in clean-ups like this in their areas more often. Tidy Towns groups are always looking for volunteers, or there may be potential for a new group like that in your area. I would like to thank the many volunteers who led the charge in their own areas and I want to acknowledge the work of KWD Recycling in collecting and disposing of the litter.” The Cathaoirleach paid tribute particularly to Kerry GAA, Kerry IFA and Kerry ICMSA and Chamber Alliances who mobilised their members all over Kerry to come out on the day and lend a hand. Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling said there was a strong commitment to the clean up all over Kerry with many individuals and groups getting involved for the first time. “Far more areas and roadsides were covered than usually which contributed to the large increase in the number of bags of litter,” he said. “We are sending certificates to all the groups that registered and sincere thanks to them for making such a wonderful effort.”

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Some CervicalCheck Victims Yet To Receive Support One of the 209 women affected by the CervicalCheck controversy will not get to meet a liaison officer to discuss what support services she needs for another two weeks. Fianna Fáil’s health spokesperson Stephen Donnelly raised the woman’s case during Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil today. He said it’s unacceptable that the woman will only get to meet the liaison officer two months after the story first broke, adding that she is not the only person in this situation. The CervicalCheck controversy came into the public eye last month when Vicky Phelan, whose cervical cancer is also terminal, settled a High Court action against the HSE and Clinical Pathology Laboratories for €2.5 million over incorrect smear test results from 2011. At least 18 women wrongly given the all clear following their smear tests have since died. Health Minister Simon Harris has launched an inquiry into the controversy.

Carbery Makes Switch From Leinster To Munster

Joey Carbery says his decision to move to Munster was arrived at after a few sleepless nights and was motivated by the desire to play more regularly at out-half. Carbery’s switch to Munster was confirmed this afternoon after weeks of speculation about his future. The IRFU and the national team management were known to be keen for Carbery to move elsewhere in order to get more games at fly-half ahead of the 2019 World Cup, where he is the presumed sec-

ond choice in the position. The Athy fly-half told RTÉ Sport’s Michael Corcoran that he experienced a hectic couple of weeks as he tossed over in his head the possibility of a move. “It’s been a tough couple of weeks. There’s been a lot of things going, with the magnitude of the games and this decision in my head as well,” he said. “I’ve come to the decision purely based on rugby. I want to go down there and get the opportunity to be playing at 10 a lot more. I know that if I can get into the rhythm of games, I know how good I can be so I’m really excited for the opportunity. I’m going down to a great team with a great set of coaches. “It’s been tough. Leaving my friends and family and the things I’m comfortable in. But I’ve made this decision purely based on rugby and I’m a professional rugby player. So I’ve got to do what’s best for my rugby and I know things can be great down there. I’m really excited about the group I’m going into.”

Food delivery service Ele. me, owned by Alibaba, has been given permission by the authorities to deliver takeaways by drone along 17 routes in Shanghai’s Jinshan Industrial Park. The newly approved routes cover a 22.4 sq mile (58 sq km) area of the park. Customers will get deliveries within 20 minutes of orders being placed from 100 different restaurants operating in the industrial park. The South China Morning Post reports that the drones will operate only between two fixed locations for each route. Staff

at the start point will collect orders and place them into the cargo hold of the drone. Staff at the delivery locations will pick up and deliver the meals to customers at their addresses. Ele.me said the drone deliveries would substantially reduce its operating costs, compared with regular road deliveries. The firm first trialled drone deliveries in September last year with the E7 drone model, which it says can carry up to six kilos of food and fly as far as 12.4 miles (20km) at a maximum speed of 40mph (65km/h).

Trump To Block German China Set For Food Carmakers From US Market Delivery Drones

President Donald Trump is hoping to block German luxury carmakers from the US market, according to an exclusive report by German magazine WirtschaftsWoche. Citing several unnamed US and European diplomats, the weekly business magazine reported that Trump told French President Emmanuel Macron last month he would maintain his trade policy with the aim of stopping Mercedes-Benz models from driving down Fifth Avenue in New York. The report didn’t give any further details on what policies would be used to effectively ban the premium carmakers. The report comes less than two weeks after the US Department of Commerce launched an investigation into automobile imports to determine whether

Never fails to entertain

they “threaten to impair the national security” of the US. That could lead to tariffs of up to 25% on the same “national security” grounds used to impose metal imports charges in March. Europe’s autos sector was trading lower shortly after the report was published Thursday, with German automakers leading the losses during mid-morning deals. Shares of Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen were all trading off around 1% on the news.

ABC Cancel Roseanne After Star’s Racist Tweet

Heavy Rain On The Way Bad news for sun-seekers hoping for more fine weather: Met Éireann have issued a rainfall warning. After basking in sunshine all week, it could be time to swap your sunnies for a raincoat as the national forecaster has warned that we could expect up to 50mm in a short space of time. At time of going to print, the Status Yellow warning is in

place between midday and 10pm today. They said in a statement on their website: “High intensity rainfall amounts in scattered thunderstorms during Friday, leading to spot flooding. As much as 50mm possible in a short time.” Despite the wet weather, we’re still set to enjoy sizzling temperatures this evening and over the long weekend.

Zidane Quits Real Madrid In Shock Announcement ABC announced on Tuesday that it would cancel the hit sitcom Roseanne following “abhorrent” comments from the show’s star, Roseanne Barr, who had compared former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett to an ape. Just an hour later, Barr’s talent agency ICM Partners dropped her as a client, the firm confirmed to CNBC. Barr’s swift downfall comes after a year of successes, including record ratings for her show’s debut and a congratulatory call from the president. Throughout, however, Barr has attracted criticism for her use of social media to provoke, attack, and spread conspiracy theories. “Roseanne’s Twitter statement

is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement Tuesday. In a since-deleted tweet, Barr said of Jarrett: “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” Critics immediately slammed Barr’s remark as racist. Likening black people to apes is an attack commonly used by racists. The Muslim Brotherhood, meanwhile, is an Islamist political group. Barr had apologized for her comments earlier in the day and said she would be refraining from using her Twitter account, which was still live at the time of publication.

In a shock move, manager Zinedine Zidane has walked away from Real Madrid just five days after winning a third consecutive Champions League. The Frenchman announced his decision at the Valdebebas training ground on Thursday afternoon, insisting he and the club needed a change and admitting he was not convinced Real would continue winning if he remained in charge. The club’s president, Florentino Pérez, described it as a “sad day” and said the decision was “totally unexpected”. Zidane would not say exactly when he made the decision to depart. Pérez said Zidane had communicated his decision on Wednesday and a press conference was hurriedly called on Thursday morning. At the same time the players were informed of the decision by text message. Zidane said he had spoken to the Real captain, Sergio Ramos, and he would speak to the other club captains, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo, in due

course. He said he had no plans to manage another club but was not tired of coaching. Real did not say anything about a successor but Mauricio Pochettino is among those they have long identified as candidates. Ex-Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger is also one of the bookies’ favourites for the job.

Body Of Long Lost WWII Pilot Found In Hawaii US military officials have identified the remains recovered from a crash site on the Hawaiian island of Oahu as a long lost World War Two aviator. Navy Reserve Ensign Harold P DeMoss crashed in 1945 during a training exercise near Kahuku Point. Due to the remoteness of the site, his remains were only found in 2016 after petitioning from Mr DeMoss’ family. Mr DeMoss’ remains will return to his family in Tennessee after more than 70 years. Judy Ivey, Mr DeMoss’ niece, told the Honolulu

Star Advertiser that officials confirmed the identity of the remains earlier this month. While conducting an F6F3 Hellcat training flight on 23 June, 1945, Mr DeMoss became separated from the rest of the planes in cloud cover over mountainous terrain. The military located the crashed and burning plane the next day, but a search party at the time buried unidentified remains and did not recover Mr DeMoss, according to the Star Advertiser newspaper.

“Dead” Journalist Turns Up At Press Conference Authorities in Ukraine have been sharply criticised for faking the murder of a Russian dissident journalist in Kiev. An official from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said Ukraine was spreading “false information”. Reporters Without Borders said it was “part of an information war”. Ukraine said it had acted to foil a Russian plot to kill Arkady Babchenko. Moscow said it was a provocation. Babchenko, a 41-year-old critic of the Kremlin, sprang a major surprise when he

arrived at a press conference in Kiev on Wednesday - the day after he was reported dead. The head of Ukraine’s security service, Vasyl Hrytsak, said an elaborate sting operation had been set up to catch hitmen paid by Russian forces. Police reported making one arrest. Relations between Kiev and Moscow have been tense since Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014 and was accused of covertly backing rebels in the bloody conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Listen

Netflix - The Intern

Review: James Bay – Electric Light It takes a brave artist to completely change the sound which made them so successful in the first place, just ask U2 who morphed their sound completely for the Achtung Baby album. Three years ago with the release of his debut Chaos and the Calm James Bay emerged as one of the most talented singer/ songwriters out there with hits like Hold Back The River and Let It Go proving to be staples on Radio play-

lists, fast forward three years and the “difficult second album” finally gets released with a radical new sound. Even though the album owes more to Frank Ocean-esque synths than the guitar sounds that made him famous, the song writing is as strong as ever which is clearly evident on the stand out tracks Us and the first single Wild Love. Electric light is out now to buy on iTunes or to Stream on Apple Music & Spotify.

On The Box

Released In 2015, The Intern is definitely up there with some of Nancy Myers’ best work. It follows a retired 70-year-old widower, Ben (played by Robert De Niro), who is bored with retired life. He applies to a be a senior intern at an online fashion retailer and gets the position. The founder of the

company is Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), a tireless, driven, demanding, dynamic workaholic. Ben is made her intern, but this is a nominal role - she doesn’t intend to give him work and it is just window dressing. However, Ben proves to be quite useful and, more than that, a source of support and wisdom.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

AIR TRAVEL

With holiday season fast upon us, many will be taking to the skies, taking in a trip abroad. Consumers who have booked a flight have significant rights and entitlements in the event that their travel plans are disrupted. EU legislation introduced in 2005 outlines passengers rights and entitlements in relation to flight cancellations, delays and instances of denied boarding. This applies to all passengers departing from Airports within the European and EEA Areas and in addition applies to passengers departing from third countries i.e. provided the flights arrive into Airport situated in EU/EEA.

In the event of flights being delayed for a period exceeding certain time limits, air carriers are obliged to provide information about entitlements and a minimum level of care and assistance as you wait. For short haul flights i.e. less than 1500 km the delay must be more than two hours for flights within the EU exceeding 1500 km and all other flights between 1500 and 3500 km the delay must be more than three hours, for other flights the delay must be more than four hours. When a flight delay exceeds the above, meals and refreshments as appropriate must be provided, hotel accommodation must be provided when an overnight stay becomes necessary and two free telephone calls, emails or faxes should be provided. If an airline is unable to provide this, receipts should be kept and this can be claimed back thereafter. In the event of excessively long delays you will be entitled to reimbursement of the full cost of ticket. In the event of a flight being cancelled, again you are entitled to a

full refund of the cost of the unused flight ticket and entitled to rerouting to final destination under comparable transport conditions. Whether or not you are entitled to financial compensation for a flight cancellation, depends on how much notice you will receive. Sometimes airlines can overbook flights and in this instance air carriers may ask for volunteers to take an alternative flight in exchange for benefits such as financial compensation. If too few volunteers are forthcoming the airline will deny boarding to some passengers. In this instance, entitlements are the same as if the flight had been cancelled. If you are denied boarding due to some defect in your travel documentation and failure to provide enough time to complete check-in security etc, this would be deemed to be the consumers own responsibility and a breach of contract by the consumers themselves and they will not be entitled to any entitlements. Significant time limits apply in respect of making the appropriate claim and independent legal advice should be sought as soon as possible. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

HOW IT WORKS

The Elite Body Wrap is an advanced treatment that combines our famous Classic Body Wrap with our completely unique Chrysalis machine. By offering a combination of electrical muscle stimulation and thermal heat, the Elite Body Wrap promises the same 6-inch double as our Classic Body Wrap, with the added benefits of muscle toning and cellulite and inch loss.

The combination of our Classic Clay Solution and specialist body wrapping techniques draw out toxins whilst compressing the soft fatty tissues to create instant inch loss and firming effect. These effects are enhanced with our Chrysalis machine. The instant heat relaxes the body and quickly opens the skins pores, allowing the Classic Clay Solution to draw out the toxins more rapidly and boost the blood flow. The effects allow for more oxygenation of tissues and lymphatic exchange, increasing the detoxification process. Whilst this process is underway, the electrical muscle stimulation contracts muscle tissue to help break down cellulite and tone the skin.

Our Elite Body Wrap is a full body treatment taking around 1.5 hours. Your therapist will measure you at particular points on the body. Body straps are applied to your abdomen and thighs. Bandages pre-soaked in our warm Classic Clay Solution are then applied using specialist wrapping techniques. You then lie on our electrical blanket for 35 minutes while the treatment gets to work. Why not use this time to indulge in an additional treatment such as a facial or manicure? After 35 minutes your bandages are removed, your therapist will re-measure and you’ll be amazed by your inch-loss result.

Be Safe In The Sun Skin cancer is the most common cancer in men in Ireland. 1 in every 8 men will get skin cancer in their lifetime. UV radiation from the sun’s rays or sunbeds cause: Non-melanoma skin cancer (the most common kind). Melanoma skin cancer, which is more serious but not as common. But the good news is that while it is the most common cancer, it is also one of the most preventable. Almost all cases are caused by ultraviolet rays from the sun and can be prevented. You don’t have to get sunburnt to get skin cancer (but it does help). The reality is that skin cancer can be caused by regular exposure to the sun over a long period of time. And that includes Irish weather. Getting a little bit of sun every day can add up without you realising it. Even on cool cloudy days the level of UV radiation can be high enough to damage your skin cells. This damage can lead to skin cancer. If you spend time outdoors, be sensible. Follow the SunSmart Code and not just on our rare sunny days. The code includes covering up, seeking shade, the use of sunglasses and wearing sunscreen.

Sporting events

Many sports such as hurling, football, tennis, golf, surfing and triathlons are most popular between April and September when UV levels are higher. It is easy to get sun damage (sunburn and tanning) during sporting and outdoor events. Whether participating in sport or just watching a game, it is important to follow the SunSmart Code especially when you are spending hours outside in the sun. To find out how SunSmart you need to be before spending time outdoors, see the UV Index. The UV Index tells you how strong the UV radiation level is on any given day. By finding out what the UV Index is in your area you can make sure to take whatever action is needed to reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Who needs to take extra care?

All men are at risk of getting skin cancer, but you need to take extra care if you have: • Pale or freckled skin that does not tan or burns

• • • •

before it tans. Naturally red or fair hair. Blue, green or grey eyes. A large number of moles. A history of sunburn or if you burn easily.

Is Gardening Really Garden Magic A Healthy Pastime? Words: Debby Looney

Gardening is great for your health. I am not a doctor, or in the health profession in any way, but this is a short, simple, statement which at first glance seems true. I think everyone would agree that gardening is a form of exercise. It certainly is tiring and works all the muscles! And it is also an inarguably wonderful way to relax. However! I meet many people who “break their backs” after a day in the garden. Or who are “wrecked”, “exhausted”, or “dying”… These do not sound like the comments of those who are gardening for their health! Also many people find gardening impossible due to arthritis, genuine back or knee problems, and age-related difficulties. Gardening, like any exercise, can cause injuries if done incorrectly or, dare I say it, foolishly! Raking and hoeing can be prime

examples of foolish gardening. How many of us (and I include myself here) have stood, rake in hand, wondering how far it will reach? Then thrown it away from ourselves, bending as far forward as possible while holding the tip of the handle, and be chuffed that we can ‘rake’ a piece of land which is practically in the neighbours garden? This, let me advise you, is not good for the back, legs or garden. Raking and hoeing should be done in small, short motions, while standing upright and holding the tool in a comfortable grip at the top and in the middle of the handle. Digging, likewise, is not an exercise in testing the strength of the handle while levering a clod of earth out. We do not have to take out a spade’s depth every time we put the spade into the ground! It can be done in a few attempts…

I know that it is difficult to accept limitations, but I feel very strongly about making life easier where possible. For example, raised kneelers are a gift. For those with bad knees or backs, they are the ideal solution. Not kneeling directly on the ground is much more comfortable for your lower back. It puts less strain on it when bending forward, and, if the kneeler comes equipped with handles, lowering yourself and getting up again is not too much effort. Also there are lighter tools available these days. Kent and Stowe have a thirty percent lighter range. I have tried some of these tools and they have not compromised on strength or quality. Something as simple as a pair of quality gloves can make all the difference when it comes to blisters. I find polyurethane coated gloves more comfortable and cool than leather or other work gloves. my experience, “gardening gloves” for ladies are often more about design than performance! So, is gardening really a healthy pastime? Of course it is! Just accept your abilities and maybe scale down. Do simple stretches before and after working in the garden (ask a health professional for advice) as many activities such as weeding require long periods of the same posture. Use any aids which are available. Make sure you practice mindfulness. Be in the moment. I advise this in two ways. Firstly, be aware of your posture and what you are doing. Secondly, take the time to appreciate all you have done and the beauty of nature. And my last piece of health advice: do not forget the sun lotion!

Dieselgate Ripples Spread Porsche has announced it will recall nearly 60,000 units of the Macan and Cayenne SUVs in Europe – at the insistence of Germany’s automotive regulatory body, the KBA – as penance for the brand’s involvement in the ‘Dieselgate’ scandal. According to German a news outlet, Porsche is contacting owners of nearly 53,000 Macans and nearly 8,000 Cayennes powered respectively by 3.0-litre V6 diesels and 4.2-litre V8 diesels, each engine installed with illegal engine-management functions. Auditors for the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in Germany had found five ‘defeat devices’ in the Macan’s engine-man-

Porsche

agement system software. As reported previously, the defeat device runs the engine in a low-emissions (nitrogen-oxide emissions) mode if it detects the vehicle is being tested in a laboratory, but not in a real-world driving scenario.

Citroen WRC Drops Meeke After Too Many Crashes Citroen’s WRC team has axed Kris Meeke and co-driver Paul Nagle because the pair have been involved in an “excessively high number of crashes”. A statement released by the team said some of the crashes “could have had serious consequences with regard to the crew’s safety, and given that the risks involved were unjustified by the sporting stakes at play, Citroen Racing WRT has decided to terminate the participation of Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle in the 2018 WRC.” The news came less than a week after a particularly heavy accident at Rally Portugal landing Meeke in hospital for a few hours when the pair had nothing to gain. The Citroen DS3 has had improved performance of late that will make the vacated seat appealing to other drivers making room in other teams for 2019. The Hyundai and Toyota World Rally Championship teams have both expressed interest in signing Meeke. His chances of finding a way back into the WRC this season are remote, but there could be openings for 2019 when the driver market starts to move at the end of this season. Hyundai’s Alain Penasse said he thought Meeke still had plenty to offer in the WRC. Prior to news of Meeke’s departure, Toyota team principal Tommi Makinen said he would be interested in talking to Meeke about a potential future deal.

Redemption For Ricciardo In Monaco Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo nursed his ailing Red Bull to a remarkable victory in the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday and with it earned redemption for his 2016 heartbreak in the famous race. Ricciardo held off Sebastian Vettel for Ferrari and title leader Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes, despite suffering a loss of power just before halfway in the 78-lap race on the testing street circuit. It was reward after his 2016 disappointment in Monaco when a late pit stop error cost him certain victory and left him devastated.

Vettel closed the gap in the standings to Hamilton to just 14 points after six rounds of the championship, with Ricciardo 24 points further adrift in third. Kimi Raikkonen finished fourth in the second Ferrari, with Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas in fifth. Attention now turns to the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal in two weeks time, with three drivers, Ricciardo, Vettel and Hamilton on two wins apiece this season and duelling it out for the world title. Both Hamilton and Vettel are seeking a fifth world championship crown with Ricciardo hoping for his first in an improving team.

Jaguar Can Beat Tesla’s Ludicrous Mode… But Chose Not To Jaguar says it decided not to be drawn into an acceleration race with Tesla with its first EV, the I-PACE. Tesla’s Model S and Model X EVs have made headlines with their hard-core ‘ludicrous’ launch mode which generates supercar-beating acceleration. But Jaguar has resisted the temptation, insiders say. Jaguar I-PACE’s engineering manager, Dave Shaw, said that the I-PACE could have easily overthrow the Tesla Model X as the fastest accelerating SUV in the world if that was the objective - but the priority was drivability and reliability. “We weren’t looking for bragging rights, deliberately not… No,” Shaw said during this week’s Jaguar I-PACE launch in Portugal. “It certainly wasn’t because we couldn’t… It’s because we didn’t want to. We chose not to,” he stated. The first serious EV rival from a mainstream luxury car maker, I-PACE is treading carefully. It’s likely that upcoming EV SUV competitors such as the Audi e-tron and Mercedes-Benz EQ C will tread a similar path.

A Ball Hasn’t Been Kicked But Eyes Already On Dublin Words: Adam Moynihan

Kerry play their first championship match of the 2018 campaign this Sunday but, for supporters at least, all eyes are already on Dublin. Mapping out your team’s route to the final is always good craic, especially this year with the new Super 8 format, and it all looks so straightforward for Kerry on paper. Beat Clare. Beat Cork in the Munster Final. Beat the Connacht champions (probably Galway) in the first game of the group phase. Beat the other two teams. Beat the second place team from the other group in the semis. And then, another crack at the Dubs. Easy. Assuming Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s new-look team do run the gauntlet, what are their chances of stopping the Dubs’ quest for four-in-a-row? If you

James O’Donoghue pictured at AIB’s announcement of the five-year extension of their GAA sponsorship.

just look at the forwards he has at his disposal you’d have to say Kerry have a shot. James O’Donoghue, Paul Geaney, David Clifford, Seán O’Shea, Micheál Burns, Daithí Casey, Kevin McCarthy, Kieran Donaghy, Darran O’Sullivan, Donnchadh Walsh, Stephen O’Brien, Barry John Keane… When you think about it, all of them would start for the vast majority of the 33 teams in this year’s championship but six of them won’t start for Kerry. And those are just the first 12 who come to mind. There are others. There are rumours that Fitzmaurice could opt for a full forward line of Geaney, O’Donoghue and Clifford. Good luck to any full back line tasked with keeping that trio quiet for 70 minutes.

There are some question marks over Kerry’s inexperienced defenders, especially considering how devastating Dublin are in attack, but by the time September comes around they will hopefully have six championship games under their belts. As good as Dublin are, they might not look quite as daunting to the new players by then. But first things first. Clare on Sunday in Killarney. The Banner have only defeated Kerry in the championship once in the last 68 years (1992). They’re a lot better at the moment than that statistic might suggest but Kerry’s first step in the 2018 championship should be fairly straightforward. Prediction: Kerry by nine.

Top Talent At Annual Colm Cooper Tournament The annual Presentation Monastery Colm Cooper football tournament took place in Killarney last week with brilliant weather and a very high standard of football on display. Presentation primary schools from Cork and Kerry made up the competition and some fantastic games took place in the early stages of the day. The Mon Killarney and St Joseph’s from the Mardyke in Cork city made up the final pairing and a fantastic battle ensued with St Joseph’s eventually coming out on top in the end. Colm Cooper was on hand to present the prizes and he congratulated all teams for the high standard of play throughout the day.

Fitzmaurice Could Start Three Newcomers In Munster Semi

Pics: Don MacMonagle Kerry begin the defence of their Munster SFC title on Sunday next in the Fitzgerald Stadium when they meet Clare with a throw-in time of 3.30pm. In the curtain-raiser at 1.30pm the Kerry ladies play Waterford. The winners of the Kerry v Clare game will meet Cork in the Munster final. The Rebels scored a great victory over Tipperary last weekend and if Kerry win on Sunday, the Munster final will be played in the new Páirc Uí Chaoimh. It is a source of great satisfaction to Cork that they will be staging the Munster final in their magnificent new complex. How good are Kerry? The team has not been announced as we go to press so Kerry fans will be hopeful of a home victory. I expect that Eamonn Fitzmaurice will start at least three newcomers to championship football. The defence has been causing some concern. Seasoned defenders Marc ó Sé and Aidan O’Mahony have retired and injury may rule out Shane Enright. The midfield, led by David Moran, is strong and there are plenty of options in the forward lines, even without Colm Cooper and Johnny Buckley who have retired from the inter-county scene. The pair will continue to play club football with Dr Crokes. Paul Geaney is the big hope here for scores and much will be expected of James O’Donoghue although he has played very little football for Kerry and for the Legion in the past 12 months. Clare had a very inexperienced team out

against Limerick but they still did the business, easily beating Limerick 1-23 to 0-14. Half of their team against Limerick were playing championship football for the first time and they acquitted themselves very well. These included a new goalkeeper in Eamonn Tubridy, full back Cillian Brennan, corner back Eoghan Collins, centre back Aaron Fitzgerald, as well as forwards Kieran Malone (who scored 1-3) and Eimhin Courtney. Team manager Colm Collins was happy with their big win over Limerick but he was quick to temper that euphoria as they travel to meet Kerry in Killarney. “We have work to do and nobody is under any illusions about the size of the effort it will take to beat Kerry in Killarney,” he said. Kerry will start as strong favourites and I expect them to win on home soil but Clare will not bend the knee that easily. In last year’s game, Kerry had to work very hard to fashion a 1-18 to 1-12 win. Kerry have won the last five Munster crowns in a row and after Sunday they should be on course for number six with, Cork waiting in the wings for a traditional Munster final clash.

Sport on TV

What a wonderful weekend we had to savour on TV. I expected Tipperary to push Cork in the Munster SHC and they did just that in a thriller, coming from nine points down to level the game in injury time 2-20 to 1-23. Luke Connolly played a blinder for the Cork footballers as did Colm O’Neill and Mark Collins. They scored 1-13 between them out of Cork’s total tally of 1-17. Carlow were magnificent in their victory over a disappointing Kildare side and of course the Dubs were merciless, hammering Wicklow by 23 points. Leinster continued on their winning ways defeating Scarlets 40-32 in the Guinness Pro14 final. Sexton was the big man in this win. I was disappointed in Liverpool, who made too many mistakes in the Champions League final and lost 3-1 to Real Madrid. Their case was not helped when Salah had to go off with a shoulder injury. He should recover to play with Egypt in this summer’s World Cup. Rory Mcllroy lost his lead in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. His playing partner Molinari won by two shots with a last round of 68. There was real drama in the Rás Tailteann which was won by Luuc Bugter with literally one second to spare. You don’t get any closer than that.

Glenflesk U-14s Claim First Division 1 Crown Sport

01.06.18

A superb performance by the Glenflesk U-14s saw them claim the club’s first ever U-14 County League Division 1 title after an epic match against a very strong Laune Rangers team in Fitzgerald Stadium.

Laune Rangers started the better and led by 1-6 to 0-2 after 15 minutes but Glenflesk were back in the game when Dara O’Connor scored their first goal of the night. Both teams traded scores after that with Laune Rangers leading 1-10 to 1-5 at half time.

A brilliant second-half display with goals from Luke Crowley, Dylan Roche and two from Ignatius O’Leary eventually helped Glenflesk to the county title. Full-time score: Glenflesk 5-9 Laune Rangers 2-16.

Legion Ladies Team Up With Life Pharmacy

The Chairman of the Killarney Legion Ladies Club has expressed his gratitude to Life Pharmacy for providing crucial sponsorship to the club’s ladies teams. “We are delighted to be teaming up with Life Pharmacy in Killarney,” said Dave Randles. “GAA clubs are very dependant on support from the community and its businesses and this link-up with Life Pharmacy is a very important partnership for us. The providing of first aid kits for our ladies teams and the related training of our mentors in basic first aid gives our players the assurance of care while lining out for our teams. We are also delighted with the training gear, which is an essential part of any club. Huge thanks to Eoin Reen for his generosity, who counts senior player Mairead O’Donoghue amongst his personnel. Celts And Blues Through In Cup, Cedar Going Up Words: Adam Moynihan

Killarney Celtic have qualified for the final of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup following a relatively comfortable 3-1 win over Mitchels Avenue in Tralee. Peter McCarthy, Gary Keane and Wayne Sparling bagged the goals for the Celts, whose double dream is still very much on the cards. An all-Killarney cup decider is also a possibility as neighbours Athletic progressed to the last four with a 3-0 away victory over Castleisland. Tony Brosnan was the undisputed star of the show for us on Friday. He bagged an incredible hat-trick, including a rasping free-kick from distance, and we’re still the hunt for silverware despite having a fairly disappointing season so far. Our last three results against Castleisland were disastrous so we probably felt like we owed them one, but going back there is always tough. It was a decent performance from us, though, and it gives us a bit of confidence going forward. Killorglin finished third in the Premier B and they were the only team to get anywhere near promoted sides Tralee Celtic and Mitchels Avenue. Supposedly they have improved a lot as the season has gone on as well so we won’t be taking them lightly at all.

Going Up

Hearty congratulations to Cedar Galaxy who are moving up yet again following their 3-0 win over Atletico Ardfert. They’ll be playing their football in

the Premier B (second tier) next season and I see no reason why they can’t compete at that level too. They seem to be doing things the right way and it’s great to see another Killarney team doing so well. Their opponents in the league final will be either

QPR or Ballyheigue - those two meet each other in the last game of the season on Monday. A draw will do for Quarry Park. I’m sure Cedar will be satisfied just to go up but it’s always nice to win a final when you get there.

Killarney Camogie Heading To All-Ireland Féile

1984 was the last time Killarney Camogie Club competed at Féile. In April, history was made again for the camogie girls who defeated Tralee Parnells to secure their position as one of two clubs representing Kerry in Connacht from June 8-10. Killarney had a strong tradition of camogie up to the late 1980s. In 2008, camogie was reintroduced to Killarney by Dr Crokes GAA Club. Building on this new beginning and recognising the importance of promoting the participation of girls in sport, the Killarney Camogie Club was reformed in 2012. The Killarney Camogie Club is an inclusive

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

Last Saturday was a busy one sports-wise with the Champions League final in Kiev and the Pro14 final taking place in Dublin. Reigning Pro14 champions Scarlets took on newly crowned European Cup champions Leinster at a sold out Aviva in fantastic playing conditions. With Leinster practically the home side and beating Munster in a hard-fought semi-final, it was difficult to see past them for the double. The match was a good spectacle for the neutral also as the final score of 40 points to 32 would suggest, however Isa Nacewa’s men never looked in trouble. With five tries coming from five different players, Leinster were impressive and Sexton was sublime from the boot. It was good to see Leinster do the double in the same season Ireland won the Grand Slam. Irish rugby is in a very good place. It is widely rumoured that Joey Carberry is Munster bound and if Munster ever want to hit the heights of 10/12 years ago we need a world class 10. Perhaps Carberry is what we need? Who knows but it’s a decade since Munster were the force in Eu-

organisation welcoming all players from the wider Killarney area. The club has grown considerably over the past number of years and with this trip to Féile, we are hoping the club will continue to thrive and encourage more girls to participate in team sports. The club has received massive support over the last two months from local businesses, clubs and schools to help with raising the necessary funds for this trip and they have thanked everyone who has contributed. It’s a once in a lifetime trip for the girls involved and something they will treasure forever. Best of luck to all involved!

Impressive Leinster Do The DOUBLE rope. Now we’re the perpetual bridesmaids. It’s hard to imagine that the likes of Murray, O’Mahony and Stander have tasted virtually little or no success compared with their time in green

shirts. Things need to change at Munster or the success of the golden generation of O’Gara and O’Connell will never be matched again.

The Club Team playing in The Pierce Purcell Shield reached the West Munster Area Semi-Final on Sunday morning last, only to lose that match to Kanturk, which was played at Kanturk G.C. The Team under the management of Chris Collins, James Collins and Donal “Gap” O’Sullivan had won their three previous matches, and although they were defeated by Kanturk in the top three games it does not reflect the closeness of that encounter which heavily depended on the outcome of the second game as Killarney were winning both of their last two games, when they were called in. The match results were Harry O’Neill & Colm O’Shea lost 2/1, Jamie Cooper & Michael Crowley lost 1 down, Tommy Galvin & Dan O’Leary lost 5/3, Joe McCarthy and Eddie O’Sullivan called in, and Liam Hartnett & Donogh O’Mahony called in. The full panel of players that represented our Club included, Brian Holden, Brian Regan, Dermot Roche, John Cahill, Barry Duggan, David Cronin. Killarney Toastmasters

We had a delightful meeting tonight with captivating speeches and lots of humour throughout. Our meeting was opened by Alan, our President at 8pm sharp. Dermot, our Toastmaster for the night started by introducing the officers of the night: Nigel as timer; Miriam as Grammarian and Jane as General Evaluator; whilst also asking everyone present to introduce themselves in their native language. Julieann delivered an excerpt from Virginia Woolf’s 1931 Novel ‘The Waves’. Ursula provided a lovely account of her experience as a Toastmaster member and emphasised how supportive she has found the club. Sile facilitated a broad range of topics, from ‘where you would most love to travel’ to ‘how good are you at tackling climate change’. The topics generated a huge amount of discussion and interest. We had three prepared speeches. Caitriona enlightened us all with a wonderful snapshot of life growing up on the farm and the many childhood memories associated with this. Bridget spoke about the history of courting and how this has changed over time. This certainly gave rise to much laughter. Finally, Yolande gave a deep and meaningful insight into the therapeutic value of horses, specifically for children with additional needs.
