Front right: Ger Neeson and Ritchie Lahiff (Cartell.ie).
Fassbender to tackle epic Molls Gap The Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes received a major boost this week with the announcement that Oscar-nominated-star Michael Fassbender will participate in the May Bank Holiday event. No stranger to motorsport, Michael successfully competed in two seasons of the North American 488 Challenge and is currently competing with Porsche in the Porsche Cup series. Fassbender has also taken up the role of event ambassador, fully committed to increasing the profile of this exciting event and motorsport in general.
An avid motorsport fan and a regular competitor on the racing circuits, Fassbender is looking forward to the Rally Ambassador role and supporting his home event. “Since its inception in 1979, the Rally of the Lakes epitomises the essence of Road Racing,” he said.
Plans revealed for St Finan’s future | By Anne Lucey The HSE has this week revealed its plans for the future of St Finan’s Hospital – saying they are to transfer 5.77 acres to Kerry County Council for social housing. It was also revealed that a new community nursing unit is also in the pipeline, as the HSE plans to lodge a planning application shortly.
A third level outreach college is also very likely to be part of the new plans as well though exactly for what discipline has not been made clear. There were mounting concerns about the future of the landmark Victorian listed building which overlooks Killarney town since it became vacant in 2012 - including from Cllr Michael Gleeson who slammed the lack of progress at a Council meeting last week – saying the building is in serious danger of becoming derelict.
“It is both an honour and a pleasure to be this year’s Rally of the Lakes ambassador.” Clerk of the Course, Dermot Healy and his team are celebrating this milestone in style with many support events to the main event with a family friendly theme at the core. “We are absolutely delighted that Michael has offered his support to this year’s event,” Dermot said. “His contribution in helping us promote the event will be far reaching.” This year’s Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes promises to be an exciting one
with an A-list of drivers from past and present, as the Rally celebrates its 40th anniversary with the introduction of the Lakes RallyFest Ireland section. This new and innovative pre-1990 section will bring a fresh dimension to the event. The event is the jewel in the crown of Irish rallying with breathtakingly picturesque backdrops that compare to the best rally stages in Europe. But this year promises to be the highlight of the Irish Rallying calendar with the Killarney & District Motor Club pulling out all the stops to present a memorable event for all the family.
The Council and the IT Tralee have now approached the HSE together through the interstate transfer of property process and have, it seems, been offered at least part of the building and some of the lands. “Kerry Council have confirmed that they wish to acquire 5.77 acres to the north of the Ring Road at Ballydribeen and the disposal of this element is being progressed with Kerry Council,” the HSE said in a statement this week. “The Council was engaged with Irish Rail regarding improving access to the site. The HSE will retain part of the main campus at St Finan’s to facilitate the development of a community nursing unit. This is currently being developed as part of a National Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative and a planning application for this proposed development will shortly
be submitted to Kerry County Council.” While the HSE has not said what the IT Tralee plans are, it confirmed the IT Tralee had expressed an interest and it has been offered what remains of the property, excluding the social housing and nursing unit elements. “The Institute of Technology Tralee, in conjunction with Kerry County Council, have expressed an interest in acquiring the remaining property at St Finan’s via the interstate transfer of state property process. The HSE has recently written to IT Tralee/KCC and is currently awaiting final confirmation of their continued interest in acquiring the remaining property,” the HSE said. The annual preventive maintenance costs for the vacant building and site at St Finan’s site amount to €17,000 per year.

Closing speeches begin in trial of dangerous driving causing death Closing speeches are being heard today (Friday) in the trial which began at the Circuit Criminal Court in Tralee on Tuesday for dangerous driving causing the death of a member of a cycling club on the N22 between Farranfore and Killarney. The accused told gardai he did not see the cyclist and was “blinded by the sun” at the time of the collision. Sean O’Mahony, now aged 34, of Ballybeggan, Tralee, denies the charge of dangerous driving causing the death of 36 year-old Edward Duggan on November 15, 2015 at Scart, Farranfore. In a statement to gardai on November 19, 2015, Mr O’Mahony, who was on his way to a football match in Cork later that afternoon, said he was not driving fast. “As I travelled up the hill, the sun came out suddenly and blinded me,” he said. He adjusted his visor and almost at the same time he felt a collision. “I did not see the cyclist,” Mr O’Mahony said in his statement. The late Mr Duggan was a member of the Killarney Cycling Club. Eight members of the club had set off around 9am from the Lidl car park in Killarney on November 15, 2015. They had gone via Fossa to Milltown, Castlemaine, Tralee, Castleisland and Farranfore, and were returning to Killarney via the N22 and were nearing the end of their 90km Sunday morning run shortly after 11am. The jury of eleven has heard the evidence of six of the eight cyclists. The group were experienced, would all have raced in the past, Brendan Cassidy told Tom Rice, prosecuting. Edward Duggan was “going very well” that morning and he was among the lead group of four who pulled ahead and picked up the pace for the hill at Knockaderry after Farranfore, Mr Cassidy said. There was a tradition in the Killarney club of waiting for colleagues who had fallen behind, he agreed with Mr Rice. The leaders stopped after the crest of Knockaderry Hill, after Farranfore at Scart Cross on the N22, before setting out again, and were going single file, Mr Cassidy said. Club member Conor Kissane, who had also been in the lead group with Edward Duggan, had gone about 200 metres after restarting when he heard a sound “like an explosion, a loud bang”. He got a fright and had to steady himself and looked back. A green Corolla stopped right near him and Edward Duggan was lying on the ground. Witnesses told of an unusually dark morning, but also of “occasional bursts
of sunlight”. Off duty nurse Niamh Sheehan who came on the scene was driving through Farranfore minutes earlier and tried to assist the stricken cyclist. He had no pulse and was not breathing. Cross examined by John O’Sullivan, defence barrister, Ms Sheehan agreed the blackness was exceptional. As well as being quite dark, there had been a burst of sunlight on the hill, and a “glare” had come off the road that dark morning, she said. The jury have been shown dash cam evidence of the road on the morning in question by a driver travelling towards Farranfore from Killarney – five minutes before the fatal accident. Vehicles coming from Farranfore have lights switched on and the deceased is captured, in dark clothing, cycling up hill, just at the inside rear of a group of four. In a statement to gardai on November 19, 2015, Mr O’Mahony said he was not driving fast. Front seat passenger, John Bradley, told the trial something swerved in front of them and he heard a bang. The deceased hit the passenger side of the windscreen window and “came out of nowhere,” Mr Bradley said. The late Mr Duggan was wearing mostly black and was wearing a helmet, the trial has been told. The trial has also heard how there was damage to the roof and windscreen of the car. The giant bike was impacted on the rear. There was no alcohol involved. Garda vehicle and collisions inspector, Garda Jim O’Brien, said the left side of the car was o.5 metres from the yellow line at the edge of the road, and the cyclist was 1.1 metres from the broken yellow line edge. The accused has no previous convictions. His 1996 Toyota Corolla was in good mechanical order, had a full NCT, was taxed and insured, and was travelling at around 70km in what is a 100 km per hour zone. The light framed giant bicycle was also in good order, the trial was told. A doctor who came on the scene by chance was on his way to attend a Mass for all those who died on the road, the trial has also heard. The trial presided over by Judge Thomas E O’Donnell continues.
Killarney restaurateur Paul Treyvaud has signed a TV deal with Virgin Media for a six part cooking series.
Killarney chef cooks up Virgin Media deal A colourful Killarney restaurateur has been snapped up by Virgin Media TV for a new cookery show - which will be beamed into tens of thousands of homes. Paul Treyvaud has signed contracts with the station for the six-programme series which will see him preparing and cooking several delightful dishes. The 30-minute slots, to be called ‘Treyvaud’s Kitchen’, have already been filmed at his home in Kenmare. The series is produced and directed by Enda Grace of Dundara Productions and distributed by Tralee-based Brian Hurley of Big Handsome Media. “I’ll be concentrating on recipes that everybody can relate to, using ingredients everyone has immediate access to,” Paul, who runs Treyvaud’s Restaurant in High Street Killarney with his chef brother Mark, said.
“The focus is on proper cooking methods, proper seasoning and proper techniques and one ingredient I always like to use is laughter - so it will be a bit of fun. “There is absolutely no chance of using any ingredients that people have never even heard of and they won’t have to go running to the shops to try to find something when they don’t even know what it looks like.” Paul came to the attention of the Virgin Media producers when he appeared in a number of guest cooking slots on Ireland AM with presenters Mark Cagney and Alan Hughes. “They got a great reaction to that and they like the fact that what I do it original and it’s Irish. They will promote the new programme extensively on all the Virgin Media channels before the first in the series is broadcast before the summer.”
Priest appeals to public over parking issue A local priest is this week appealing to the public to avoid parking on church grounds for prolonged periods. Fr Kieran O’Brien this week issued a statement asking the public not to park for prolonged periods and to be mindful of those needing parking spaces at St Mary’s Cathedral. Recently, he said, there has been an increase in the number of cars parked on the Cathedral grounds and avenue. “On weekdays cars are being parked for prolonged periods with many parking for the full working day,” he said. “This means that families are unable
to get parking when they come to the Cathedral for Mass, funerals, weddings and other liturgical ceremonies. We ask the public for their help with this and remind them that the nearby car park continues to be available for parking.” He added, that the parking spaces around the Cathedral Sacristy door be used only by those accessing the Cathedral with limited mobility and in need of the wheelchair ramp. “We also ask that parking on the grounds of the Cathedral at weekend Mass times only be used by those with limited mobility. Thank you for your understanding and help with this.”

Lir Café plans fundraiser for Down Syndrome Kerry | By Adam O'Connor The manager of The Lir Cafe in Killarney Alan Oliver is partnering up with Frank Murphy the CEO of Monex to host their annual charitable coffee morning at The Lir Café
Eileen O'Donoghue (Killarney Municipal District Officer) and Cllr John Sheahan (Mayor of Killarney), with Kathleen Foley, Philip Hanafin and Yvonne Quill (Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns Chairperson), with one of the seven wooden carvings located between the Deenagh Cottage and the playground on the Fossa Way in Killarney National Park. Creative carvings are a new woodland attraction
And all are welcome to come along and support the event on Thursday, March 7, from 10am until 2pm. There will be tea, coffee and refreshments including a miniature buffet free of charge and people can make a donation to charity. This year they will be supporting Down Syndrome Kerry in raising some much-needed funds to assist people in Kerry with the condition.
“Frank and his company Monex have been so generous to match whatever amount we raise for Down Syndrome Kerry,” Alan told The Killarney Advertiser this week. Madeleine Doyle, PRO with Down Syndrome Kerry said this week that they are delighted to have been chosen as the charity this year. “The charity is not government funded so events like this raise much needed funds to help people with Down Syndrome by providing them with speech therapy classes and occupational therapy classes,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.
If you go down to the woods today – you’ll definitely get a surprise – as some very lifelike animal carvings have been unveiled in Killarney. Seven wooden carvings, including a heron, kingfisher, otter, Greenland white-fronted goose, red squirrel, pine marten and an owl, were installed on the Fossa Way between Deenagh Cottage and the playground. The wildlife were carved by Sol Solomon of Wyrdwood in West Cork and it’s the latest Tidy Towns project for 2019 to highlight the wildlife that surrounds us in the National Park, Yvonne Quill Chairperson of Killarney Looking Good explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Some of this wildlife such as an owl, red squirrel and a heron can be seen at times within easy reach of the carvings,” she said. “The Tidy Towns committee are hoping to raise awareness with parents and children to watch out for and pay attention to the wildlife we are so lucky to have on our doorstep. The Tidy Towns committee wish to acknowledge the on-
going support of Kerry County Council through the Community Support Fund and in installing the sculptures. This vital source of funding allows us to complete such worthwhile initiatives.” The committee are currently looking at developing a storyboard which they plan to erect at the start of the trail, with information to do with the area included, she added. “We would be very grateful for any information from members of the public to do with this location, around the Deenagh and Port Road that might be of interest to locals and visitors.” The committee will be shortly launching their new three year plan and are always looking for volunteers to design and implement projects such as the above. If you have an idea for any such project contact killarneylookinggood@gmail. com.

The Killarney Advertiser's first home at Monteagle, Woodlawn.
Killarney Advertiser office today, based in High Street, Killarney
We don’t look a day over 40…. This week the Killarney Advertiser has reached another very impressive milestone - 46 years in print. x
| By Cormac Casey I’m sure when my father established the Killarney Advertiser way back in March 1973, he didn’t contemplate that people would be reading his creation 46 years later. And as for the first readers of this unusual concept back then, I’m sure they didn’t see a long future in this free publication. Admittedly, more a newsletter back then rather than the large page count you see today. However, for the few of us that can cast our minds back that far, the Killarney Advertiser was the first of its kind - a new concept never seen in Ireland before. Remember, there were no mobile phones or social media back then. There was no local radio either, and the closest newspaper to home was one county paper. Your local news came from over the garden fence. So, if you were too busy to talk to your neighbour, the local news network broke down. But Killarney, as it is today, was a vibrant, energetic community. There was a growing appetite to communicate and promote within the boundaries of the community. Killarney was buzzing with an entrepreneurial spirit. A spirit that spawned the Killarney we now see today. And one of those pioneers of the Killarney of today was Danny Casey. Already a successful business man in the town, he identified the need to promote the growing commercial community directly to the community itself. And the only method available back then was through print, which is now common place in most vibrant communities throughout the country.
Danny Casey, who established Killarney Advertiser in March 1973.
He was adamant that the community required this service while overlooking the commercial viability, however, thankfully many people contributed on a voluntary basis to help promote the community through the page of the Killarney Advertiser, not unlike the French 1599 concept of a chamber of commerce. However, the misguided suborn spirit paid off and eventually it was able to wash its own face, I’m sure to the relief of my father, who was never one for giving up. Through the years our local economy and community has undergone so many social and economic changes. One dramatic change has been how we consume content. Part of the survival of this publication is down to the very concept from where it was conceived, identifying our need for content, local content and delivering it in a way the engages with the consumer. As the current custodian of this wonderfully production, I must pay tribute to all the staff, contributors and advertis-
ers, both past and present, whom have supported our economic and social community through the pages of this publication. And you, the reader every Friday evening who make it your business to call and support your “local” to collect your copy. I am delighted that this well-intentioned, maybe misguided concept, survived the turbulent early years to find its way into the hearts and minds of this wonderful community and allowing us the opportunity to entertain and inform you for the past 46 years. A proud legacy of that stubborn streak wanting to do good for the community has resulted in employing 40 people related to the production of this weekly publication. Killarney Advertiser went on to develop KC Print, one of Ireland’s largest trade print providers. We are a small commercial concern amongst giants, but we have been always able to box above our weight for
the good of the community, testimony to our founders that took risks and winning reward from the community. Bring on the next 46… Thank you.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
St Finan’s Hospital: Would a private body take so long? Two of the most powerful State agencies in the region, the HSE and Kerry County Council are not in tune when it comes to releasing information about St Finan’s. The County Council said there was only discussions - the other revealed plans were in fact at an advanced stage. The first signal that land from St Finan’s might be used for social housing came in the Dáil in July 2017, in a reply to a question from TD Danny Healy-Rae. The following November, the HSE outlined the core strategy for St Finan’s Hospital, including the negotiations for 5.7 acres with Kerry County Council for social housing and a community nurs-
ing unit. Then there was the mushrooming of the idea in this column actually, that St Finan’s would be ideal as a third level college for tourism, in the manner say of a Swiss hotel school to add value to our biggest industry. Now we learn, courtesy of the HSE, the IT Tralee and the Council are interested in the property, though for what purpose remains to be seen. “The HSE has recently written to IT Tralee/KCC and is
currently awaiting final confirmation of their continued interest in acquiring the remaining property.” Cllr Michael Gleeson had a formal motion before the latest Council meeting, on Monday last week, asking for an update and “the progress if any” of Saint Finian’s Hospital. He got a two line reply that the Council “continues to engage”. But, exactly five working days after the Council meeting, the HSE coughed up a lot more, though there was a bit of dragging it out of them on my part. It will be up to Kerry County Council and the IT Tralee to get their ducks in a row on this one. It is the HSE who are
waiting for the Council - and pressure must be put on! That same Council meeting in Tralee heard there are 4,000 on the housing list in Kerry, and that €13 million is paid out yearly in rents to landlords for social housing needs in Killarney and elsewhere. I always expected that when a councillor put down a motion at a meeting for public information, management were obliged to say what they knew. I thought that was the whole point of motions? The Council have responded high-mindedly to the charge they do not live up to this: “All motions submitted to Council meetings are answered comprehensively and truthfully,” they say. My real concern is not so much the failure to inform. It is that almost two years since public land was being earmarked for housing, not a brick has been put up. Does anyone think a private body would take so long?
Fine Gael’s reluctance to build houses is shameful Wasn’t it Phil Hogan the auctioneer, who, as Minister for Local Government, destroyed local government and set up the structures that now have had to be reformed again? I mention the auctioneering link in the context of the new “grand plan” by the Government. This is the plan for solving the housing crisis and at the same time taking care of the elderly. Let me put my cards on the table: I do not trust Fine Gael when it comes to housing and property because too many of them are, or have been auctioneers, and if they are not auctioneers they are too close to auctioneers and the property industry. Fine Gael’s reluctance to build houses for the people is shameful. It is leading to huge trauma in society, from the homeless to the student, not to mention huge pay claims by the public sector. Now they brazenly plan to look at ways “to incentivise people” to sell their homes and downsize to retirement-type communities - which of course are nowhere to be found. “Options under consideration could include breaks on Capital Gains Tax or on Stamp Duty for the “age-friendly” homes. Those discussions still have to take place with the Department of Finance,” The Irish Times told us on Monday. Well, isn’t that lovely! Might it have an-
ything to do with the fact that people in Foxrock and Churchtown and other wealthy South Dublin suburbs are threatening to pull FG up short in the ballot box at having to pay their increasingly high property tax? At the same time, these South Dubliners can’t offload the pile because no-one can come up with the mortgages to buy their substantial homes? This grand plan is only the latest Blue Shirt attempt at hanging out the washing for the wealthy Dubliners, methinks. We had TD Josepha Madigan only weeks ago saying there should be lower rates of Property Tax for people in her own constituency in South Dublin because the price of their houses has gone up! We know Leo - our great and benevolent leader - is very Dublin, and this
whole Government hardly looks beyond the Red Cow. But this is too much. The rest of the country will be forced into something it does not want, to save money for the FG in Dublin! It’s a gimmick, because few if any retirement communities in our overcrowded cities and big towns will ever be built. By the way, speaking of the colour red, there is nothing new in this piece of social engineering. After the 1917 Russian Revolution, the Soviets could not build enough houses for the increasing numbers of peasants coming into the cities. The Reds came up with a plan of communal living - the rural people could crowd into the large apartments and houses of the bourgeois. It was all marketed as part of the new social order. In the new spirit of things, large homes were out.
Having many rooms for one family went against Bolshevik thinking. But the whole “new collective vision for the future” was only to cover the fact they couldn’t provide services or build enough houses. Now, the stated policy of this Government, and I include Fianna Fail, is to herd everyone into towns. And rather than investing in basic services in rural Ireland, services that were plentiful before 1916, or build houses, it is now engaged in the propaganda that all elderly rural people really want is to move to towns - they will live longer if they do. What is the definition of a big house - three bedrooms? Soon that will be down to one. We will all be like the ageing King Lear, thrown out on the heath with the fool for company. “Instead of their borrowed and outdated propaganda, they should read their Shakespeare. I refer them to the wisdom of King Lear when his harsh daughters are telling him he is old and he no longer needs the room or the retinue: ‘O, reason not the need: our basest beggars Are in the poorest thing superfluous: Allow not nature more than nature needs, Man’s life’s as cheap as beasts’ (Act 11, Sc 4) If we were beasts, we’d have only the bare necessities. But we are not. Take note Fine Gael!

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club tees off with new management partnerships | By Michelle Crean There’s a brand new vision for Killarney Golf & Fishing Club – as this week they announced new partnerships with both Synergy Golf and golf professional Mark Heinemann. Synergy Golf will manage the day-today operations of the professional shop and the marketing and revenue growth for the club, while new Head Professional, Mark Heinemann, will return to the club with a renewed plan for coaching and practicing. The appointments are driven by a bid to boost performance of the overall business and ultimately to enhance the playing experience for both members and visitors. Over the past few years, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, which is located in Killarney National Park and surrounded by the lakes of Lough Leane, has invested over €1m in improving the golf courses and this is set to continue this year. Together, they and their new management partners are investing over €200,000 into the facility over the next few months. Through the new partnerships, the club is looking to significantly increase business performance over the next three years. The focus will be on driving green fee revenue, enhancing partnerships with local enterprises and establishing an improved international footprint for the venue. The outcome will be beneficial for not only Killarney Golf & Fishing Club but will also bring a boost to tourism. “Over the coming weeks, we are com-
mitted to relaunching a newly designed state-of-the-art professional shop, and in addition, we will begin to implement the strategies which have been carefully designed to assist with achieving the desired goals of the management council,” Andy Kenny, Director at Synergy Golf said. The club boasts a membership base of 1,700 members local and international members, welcomes over 10,000 international golfers annually and is the honorary home to many golfing greats including Rory McIlroy, Paul McGinley, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, Nick Faldo, Ross Fisher and many more. “Killarney has always held a special place in my heart, and I've been waiting for the right time to re-join the club,” Mark Heinemann said. The advanced PGA professional and fourth professional at the club in its 126 year history, added that he’ll be investing in the coaching facilities and equipment, combined with the soon-to-be completed improvement programme of the practice facilities - all with the aim of helping the members and guests achieve their golfing goals for 2019 and beyond. “I'm delighted to be returning to one of the most prestigious courses in Ireland and for the opportunity it provides to further enhance my coaching career,” he said. “It’s exciting to be part of the new management team and I’m looking forward to working together with the club and the guys at Synergy Golf to bring new changes, enhanced improvements and success to this exceptional facility.”

Former councillor plans to launch new book The insights as to what life was like for a local Killarney councillor will be revealed in his new book ‘The Wonderful Life of a Councillor’, later this month. Former Killarney Town Councillor Sean O’Grady, who served in Killarney town for 40 years will launch the book on March 22, in the International Hotel, Killarney at 7.30pm. The book, which is approximately 300 pages, is about the people of Killarney and his career. It also addresses the examination of local government reform by various commissions since the ‘70s, and the replacing of town government in 2014 with Municipal entities. “The book ‘The Wonderful Life of a Councillor’, subtitled ‘What kind of a gobshite do you think I am’ is a memoir of my experiences of growing up, working and living in Killarney,” Sean explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week. “It is a book about people and the political system in general as seen through the eyes of a political prac-
titioner of 40 years. As the name suggests, the impression is conveyed that being a public representative is a wonderful, rewarding and edifying exercise and evidence is advanced that would give substance to this view, but the reader is also invited to form a different view as suggested in the subtitle of the book. It also looks at where we are as a society in the light of the diminution of democracy over the decades, where fiscal considerations have become paramount throughout many aspects of political governance, local, national and European.” He added that there’s a massive mixture of humour combined with serious subjects. “The book entwines this basic premise with some of the issues of the day and includes the gems that are the stories of the real people of Killarney together with some of the local issues and concerns that will resonate with most citizens in any town throughout the land. It also looks at the sometimes troubled relationship between the media and public representatives.”

Get ready to relax for a great cause | By Adam O’Connor
One local business is planning a very unique fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society tomorrow (Saturday). Staff from the Perfect Therapy Clinic based in the Reeks Gateway are planning treatments for €15 - with funds going to the Irish Cancer Society. The person who came up with the idea is physiotherapist Jana Lalikova, who owns Perfect Therapy Clinic, Jana, who is also taking part in Strictly Come Dancing in aid of The Irish Cancer Society in the INEC on March 8, wanted to organise a fundraiser. She decided to offer treatments to new and existing customers and generously give the proceeds to the charity. “The amount of customers we have had
that’ve had a past medical history of cancer and went through it is frightening,” Jana told the Killarney Advertiser. “So we decided we would do something to help out just like the dancing.” Treatments on offer tomorrow from 10am until 1pm include massage and reflexology with all proceeds going to the charity. Booking is necessary. To book a massage call 064 662 2685 or 086 318 2096 To book a reflexology treatment call 083 857 4120.

Killarney RFC plan a cash bonus bucket challenge
Killarney RFC have a new and exciting fundraiser up and running called ‘Split the Bucket’, a weekly draw where entrants can win money for only €2.

Official opening of new look gym Tomorrow (Saturday), the new look Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre’s Gym will be officially opened. At 11am, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin will officially open the new strength and conditioning area. The upgrade was funded by a Sports Capital Grant along with a contribution from Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, explained Helena Hammond, Centre Manager. “The upgrade compromises of new flooring and equipment which will
provide much needed opportunities for individuals who may need rehabilitation, along with providing modern equipment for people to continue with their own personal journey to physical and mental well-being,” she said. “The open plan layout allows for accessibility for all.” To celebrate the opening, the centre will be holding free taster class sessions on the new equipment from today (Friday) to Sunday, she added. “The gym will be open this weekend for all to view and try, and all are welcome to the official ceremony.”
They will have buckets at various venues around Killarney - bars, restaurants, shops - simply place your €2 into the envelope at the venue, write your name and phone on the envelope and you could possibly 'Split the Bucket’. Draws will take place on Sunday evenings and will be shown live on Facebook. “The beauty of this draw is that there is also a prize for the serving staff who gave out the winning envelope, so there is a very nice incentive for the venues to get involved,” Liam Murphy, club PRO told the Killarney Advertiser. “As each entrant puts the name of the server/barperson etc., onto the envelope, that person can win 10 percent of the total brought in each week. We then split the remaining money 50/50 between the winner and the club. So, each week we actually have two winners!” This weekend marks the 4th weekend of the draw, he added. “The first draw took place at the Golden Nugget in Fossa with Frank Culloty winning a cool €394, while barman Kevin Kelliher of The Shire won €87. The second draw was won by Dominic Dixon who won €320, while Pat, the barman at the Killarney Avenue won €70. Last Saturday night the draw took place at
the Killarney Avenue as the Cup Final was on Sunday and David Kerins won €346, while barman Niall Woulfe won the seller's prize. A different bar will be the venue each week and we will announce the details across our social media platforms.” The ‘Split the Bucket’ draw is a new fundraiser for Killarney RFC, whose Seniors won the Martin O'Sullivan Cup at Irish Independent Park last weekend. Recently Club Captain Peter Kelly was awarded Munster Rugby Volunteer of the Month while their Minis section is the current Munster Rugby Minis Club of the Season. “The club has recently redeveloped the main and juvenile pitches at our home in Aghadoe, spending over €120,000 on the pitches, and next season we will have pitches to rival any,” he said. “To this end we kicked off a ‘Sponsor a Sod’ fundraiser last summer which has been successful, and now the ‘Split the Bucket’ fundraiser aims to raise funds for the club.” If you would like any more information, check out their website at www.krfc. club/split-the-bucket for more details. “Get your €2 in now - check out our website for a comprehensive list of venues.”

To see so many wonderful members both young and old giving it their all for every performance was a joy to see, and we congratulate and thank you for bringing this iconic musical to life once again.” Their matinee on Tuesday was also a massive success as it was completely sold out with an audience 2,000. “It was Kerry schools mainly and a fabulous start of the run. Some outstanding performances by cast left the audiences on their feet crying for more at the end of each performance,” she said. “Cast and crew are taking a well-deserved break for this week and we wish them well.”
Audiences in the INEC over the three nights weren’t left disappointed as the opening night on Tuesday was a stunning take on the original ‘The Sound of Music’. And again on Wednesday and
Thursday night the energy didn’t dip as the cast proved what an outstanding talented bunch they are. Those that were lucky enough to have the opportunity of being part of the audience were treated to some great entertainment, and for those who didn't get the chance to see, what a pity, Orna Cleary O’Shea explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week. “This latest production by KMS is up

Ger plans tough Torcathon challenge Tomorrow (Saturday) Ger Bythell will run the ‘Torcathon’, a trail marathon he dreamt up while running around the ‘Cardiac Steps’ last year. Ger is doing this to mark what would have been his sister Ros Wallace’s 50th birthday, and to raise sponsorship funding for the Kerry Hospice Foundation and the Palliative Care Team at University Hospital Kerry. This wonderful team took such incredible care of Ros during her illness last year, and were so kind to her family and friends, that Ger wanted to express their sincere appreciation in a practical way, and what better way than running along the beautiful Torc Mountain trails. The course will be challenging, four laps, two short and two long, each one incorporating an ascent of the locally-named ‘Cardiac Steps’. The long laps also include summitting Torc Mountain. All going well Ger hopes to complete the 42.2km course in under six hours arriving back to the finish at the Torc Waterfall car park at about 1pm. “The Kerry Hospice Foundation needs to raise €10,000 per week to cover its commitments and support its great services,” Ger said. If you would like to sponsor Ger please search ‘Torcathon’ on ‘everydayhero. com’ or follow the link https://give. everydayhero.com/ie/torcathon.
Ger Bythell will run the ‘Torcathon’ tomorrow (Saturday) in memory of his sister Ros Wallace.

Lisa Ni Iarlaithe celebrated her 50th birthday party with family and friends in The Killarney Avenue Hotel on Saturday night. She is pictured with husband Sean Casey, daughter Éabha and son Aindi. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
Birthday bash is a fundraising smash! A birthday celebration turned into a huge fundraiser on Saturday night for Lisa Ní Iarlaithe - who turned the BIG 50! Lisa, from Lissivigeen, who is Deputy Principal of the Gaelscoil Faithleann, raised a whopping €2,300 for ‘Straight Ahead Ireland’, a medical support group affiliated to Crumlin, which provides surgery, support and medical equipment for children with orthopaedic conditions. Lisa was joined by husband Sean, and children Éabha and Aindi in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. However, daughter Sadhbh who is currently in Vancouver, was greatly missed. Also 110 family, friends, neighbours, old school and college friends turned up for the celebration and Lisa said that she was thrilled with the phenomenal support she received. Lisa chose the charity as her daughter Éabha suffers from scoliosis and has undergone up to 20 operations since the age of six to straighten her back. The teen’s last operation in July last year took 10 hours as she had to have a bone fusion
and new rods inserted into her back. Éabha is currently studying for her Leaving Cert in the Intermediate School Killorglin and Lisa said that she is a great girl who never complains and always has a smile on her face. However, it was only recently Lisa heard of the charity. “I wanted to fundraise and do it for something like orthopaedic surgery,” Lisa said. “About five weeks ago I contacted Crumlin as Éabha has been treated on St Joseph’s Ward and they suggested 'Straight Ahead Ireland’ which was set up in 2011. We haven’t used the service but they take patients off the waiting list and provide surgery at weekends. The money is for support, medical equipment and aftercare.” Speaking about her party – Lisa, whose official birthday was February 13 - said she had a great time. “It was a great night, a huge success. I had a DJ Denis O’Leary and everyone had a great time. I want to thank everyone for coming and for their support - but Sadhbh was missed!”

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Some rhododendron are safe for the garden One plant which is synonymous with Killarney must surely be the rhododendron. With its bright purple flowers and glossy green leaves it thrives on our mountainsides. It is the object of much worry given its vigorous nature as it has colonised and bullied native plants. However, we are lucky to be able to successfully grow many of its close relatives, and this week I would like to mention a few varieties which are suitable - and safe - for the garden. I am often asked what the difference is between azaleas and rhododendrons. All azaleas are now classified under the genus of rhododendron, which makes all azaleas rhododendrons. How to tell them apart is quite simple, especially when they are flowering. Both have five lobed flowers, but rhodos tend to be bell shaped, whereas azaleas are funnel shaped or flat. Rhododendrons have 10 stamens, that is, two per lobe. Azaleas have five stamens, one per lobe. True rhodos are evergreen, apart from R. mucronulatum and R. dauricum. Azaleas have small hairs parallel to the leaves, as
opposed to rhodos which generally have smooth leaves, with small scales on the underside. Rhodos all need an acidic soil, which is why they grow well here in Kerry. They also like our climate, from those that originally come from the foothills of the Himalayas to those that hail from Borneo and New Guinea: most will thrive here. Rhodos are in the main a forest plant, and like humus rich soil with plenty of decomposing material. They also like moist conditions and dappled shade. They need enough light to set flower buds, but need protection from glaring sun which can damage leaves. All need well drained soil. If your soil is prone to waterlogging then it is best to plant them on a mound, containing a moss peat or Browngold and topsoil mix. Alternatively build a raised bed. There are usually two instances where rhodos turn yellow: if the leaves are yellow between the veins, but the veins are still green, then they may need some extra acidity, Epsom salt will do the trick. If the leaves are completely yellow and drooping, there is not enough air in the soil, due to compaction or waterlogging.
SOME EARLY FLOWERING VARIETIES TO LOOK OUT FOR: • Barbatum – scarlet flowers, up to 8m tall. • Dauricum – deciduous, rosy flowers, 1.5m tall •N obleanum album – a group of narrow, silvery leaved rhodos with pale pink buds which open white in very early spring. A beauty at 2.5m tall • Ptarmigan – small dark green leaves, pure white flowers, 1m tall FLOWERING FROM EARLY MAY: • Macabeanum – tree rhododendrum with cream/yellow flowers, 15m tall • Fragrantissimum – very fragrant white flowers with yellow throat, 2.5m • Irene Koster – deciduous azalea, white/pink flowers, very pretty, 1.5m tall LATE FLOWERING: •A rborescens – deciduous azalea with beautiful autumn colouring. Flowers white, good scent, 4m tall • Dopey – red flowers 2m tall and wide • Luteum – deciduous, strongly scented yellow flowers at 4m tall.

Table quiz will fund pilgrimage to Lourdes A popular annual table quiz, which raises funds to send Kerry children and young adults with special needs to Lourdes, will be held in Killarney on Thursday, March 7.
Killarney Craft Ladies presented a cheque to the Kerry Hospice Foundation recently. Pictured front l-r were: Kate O’Connor, Pat Doolin, Margaret McCarthy, Angela Curran and Honor Doyle. Back l-r were: Peg Coffey, Betty Benson, Dermot O’Reilly, Cathal Walsh, Ailish O’Sullivan and Colette Sorensen.
Crafty ladies raise funds for local hospice The creative and crafty skills of one local kind-hearted group who rescue and spruce up old teddy bears – is helping to raise funds for charity. Killarney Craft Ladies (KCL) last year raised €3,441.34 which they presented to the Kerry Hospice Foundation recently. And to date the ladies have raised €17,975.11 for the local charity. Set up in January 2013, the sole purpose of the group was to fundraise for the Kerry Hospice Foundation/Palliative Care. “Our aim was to ‘rescue’ teddy bears from charity shops in the locality, in particular Killarney, Tralee and Castleisland,” Margaret McCarthy, spokesperson for the group, said. They then extended their search to Cork, Limerick and as far away as Galway. They also welcome teddy bears from the public. Members of the group include, Betty Benson, Peg Coffey, Honor Doyle, Mar-
New pilot programme for hackney drivers Anne Graham, Chief Executive of the National Transport Authority, has announced a pilot program that will give grant aid to rural hackney drivers. This pilot program will enable the NTA to test this operation model before making it available country-wide, also allowing for a better estimation of the costs. “I give a guarded welcome to this development,” Kerry TD Michael Healy Rae said. “I have been campaigning for
garet McCarthy, Kate O’Connor, Brid O’Donoghue, Eilish O’Sullivan and Colette Sorensen. They meet twice a month to knit, sew and spruce up the bears, and make them stylish new outfits. The bears are then ready for resale at the Halloween and Christmas Craft Fairs at the Killarney Outlet Centre. The ladies also had a very successful sale at Manor West, Tralee, last December. “The Killarney Branch of Kerry Hospice Foundation wishes to acknowledge the generosity of KCL in selecting them as beneficiaries of the proceeds of their fundraising activities,” Pat Doolan, Chairperson, Killarney Branch said. “They combine, what is for them a hobby, with fundraising for their selected charity.” it for a long period, but I will have to see how it will work on the ground before giving it a wholehearted welcome. I do not want to undermine the existing taxi or hackney operators.” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae has campaigned on this issue extensively over the past several years, attempting to simplify the administration involved in the local area hackney application process. He says that taxi drivers often do not make a liveable wage, but are a necessary part of rural Irish life. “We do not have a public transport service, and we never will have one that will meet the demands of many of the people living in rural Ireland. Taxis and hackneys will have to play a very important role in meeting the travel demand in areas where public transport is not available.”
The Tim Moore Memorial Table Quiz will be held in the Gleneagle Hotel at 7.30pm and the question master will be local charity champion Cathal Walshe. The entry fee for tables of four is €40 and it is €20 for teams of schoolchildren. Proceeds from the night will go to the Irish Pilgrimage Trust which organises pilgrimages to Lourdes every Easter for children and young adults with physical or intellectual difficulties. Close on 500 young people from all over Ireland will be brought on the pilgrimage on Easter Sunday and they will return the following Saturday. All the volunteer helpers and medical staff that will accompany them cover for their own travel costs and expenses. The annual quiz, which is running for close on 30 years, is dedicated to the memory of the late Killarney accountant Tim Moore, who was a tireless campaigner for the Irish Pilgrimage Trust. He passed away, suddenly, in 2002 and his friends have continued the quiz as a tribute to his legacy and to ensure the charity continues to be supported. Kieran Coffey, the retired principal of
Tim Moore
Fossa National School, is one of those who spearhead the Kerry pilgrimage to Lourdes and he has appealed to the public to support the very important fundraiser which helps offset some of the costs involved. “We are delighted to be in a position to continue Tim’s great work and to dedicate the quiz to him,” Kieran said. “The event is always so well supported by the people of the greater Killarney area and we greatly appreciate that generosity.”
Cllr calls for better public sewerage schemes Councillor Michael Cahill has called on Kerry County Council to prepare a list of villages throughout the county that are in urgent need of Public Sewerage Schemes and to submit the fully costed list to Irish Water for funding. Cllr Cahill proposed that priority be given to villages that are currently experiencing major issues such as Beaufort, saying he was aware of three estates in Beaufort Village that were experiencing difficulties and ultimately a public sewerage scheme was required. He welcomed the news that funding will be announced early in 2019 for sewerage schemes. Cllr Cahill said villages such as Portmagee, where the population dramatically increases during the tourist season, should also be prioritised. "We have a number of villages in our county that have sewerage schemes and are at capacity and one such village is Glenbeigh. This Council purchased a site for a new scheme many years ago and absolutely nothing has happened since.
Irish Water need to get their act in order.” In their reply, the Council said that Irish Water is the Water Authority responsible for the provision of all Water Services across the country. Since the establishment of Irish Water, Kerry County Council has made numerous submissions and had frequent discussions seeking funding for both upgrades to existing Public Sewerage Schemes and for the provision of Public Sewerage Schemes in villages which do not currently have public wastewater collection and treatment facilities. In particular, in July 2018, following consideration by the members at the July Council meeting , KCC made a submission in relation to the Draft Irish Water Capital Investment Plan (2020 to 2024) highlighting the need for Public Sewerage Schemes in Unsewered Villages, allied to the seasonal loading variations. The matter of the waste water infrastructure in our towns and villages will be reviewed as a constituent part of the review of County Development Plan.

UN Peacekeepers to receive prestigious award
It was announced this week that the men and women of the Irish Defence Forces, who have served on UN Peacekeeping duties over the past 60 years, are to receive the Hugh O'Flaherty Humanitarian Award 2019. This year, the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society decided to move the programme forward to June 4, to coincide with the 75th Anniversary of the WW II liberation of Rome and the successful conclusion of the Hugh O’Flaherty inspired Rome Escape Line. In 2008, the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society was formed in his home town of Killarney to honour his memory by acknowledging his humanitarian works during the 1930s in Haiti and San Domingo, and the early 1940s during WW2 in Rome. At its first meeting of 2019, the Memorial Committee unanimously decided that it should present the 2019 Humanitarian Award to the members of the Irish Defence Forces, past and present, who have served in UN Peacekeeping Missions overseas for the past 60+ years, Chair of the O’Flaherty Memorial Society Jerry O’Grady explained. “To date, 86 members of the Irish Defence Forces have lost their lives while serving in peacekeeping humanitarian missions with the UN,” he said. “We believe that this immense selfless sacrifice in the name of world peace deserves to be acknowledged in this way and we should all be tremendously proud of our men and women who wear
the famous Blue Beret.” In 1980, Private John O’Mahony 15 Bn. UN Veteran (Retd) from Scartaglin (pictured) served with the Irish Peacekeeping Force in the Lebanon. While there, John and two of his colleagues were captured by Lebanese Christian Militia. Although shot in three places, John survived but sadly, his colleagues Private Derek Smallhorne from Dublin and Private Thomas Barrett from Cork were both killed. The ceremony will be attended by the Minister of State for Defence, Paul Kehoe TD and the Defence Forces Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral Mark Mellett. Invitations will also be issued to the ambassadors of the various countries of origin of the PoWs saved by the Rome Escape Line. “Details of the full programme of events will be announced later, but we are delighted to confirm that it will include a free public performance of Donie Courtney’s highly successful one-man play on the Monsignor’s life – ‘God Has No Country’.” The Hugh O’Flaherty Commemoration Programme is supported by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Kerry County Council Community Support Fund.
Annual swim raises over €8,000 for Aware | By Michelle Crean €8,402 collected as part of an annual Christmas Day swim was donated to charity this week. Niki McCarthy, who has been organising the Dundag Christmas Swim for the past 10 years, handed the funds to Rosemary Carvill from Aware on Monday afternoon. The swim was set up by Niki to remember her late sister Sylvan Money (26) who took her own life 13 years ago. It has become a strong local tradition and is growing in popularity each year – and has raised over €50,000 for the charity during that time. “I set it up because I wanted to do something in her memory,” Niki told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “It was our 10 year anniversary and we had about 150 in the water and 150 spectators, three times as many than other years. It seems to be getting busier each year and it’s now part of people’s Christmas tradition.” She added she’d like to thank the Franciscan Friary for donating €2,000, the Order of Malta, brothers Derek and

A Stamp for Ireland An Post has issued a new stamp to capture living in Ireland on any given day. The new stamp titled ‘A Stamp for Ireland’ celebrates Irish Identity though a fun depiction of the Irish weather The design features the blue sky and green fields which typify the Irish landscape, with sheeting rain a key element of the scene. Closer inspection of the design reveals that the metallic silver raindrops are microscopic words in the Irish and English language which are everyday expressions for rain. The stamp carries a ‘W’ (worldwide) designation for international posting. Just as the Inuit have over 50 different words for snow, the Irish have accumulated a similar number describing

rain. For example, ‘a soft day’ (a mist), ‘spitting’ (a few drops of rain) and ‘lashing’ (diagonal hard rain) and in Irish ‘ceobhrán’ (drizzle) and ‘brádán’ (misty rain). The concept and design are by Amsterdam based Irish designers, The Stone Twins. Twins Garech and Declan have taken a witty approach to stamp design using weather to represent Irish identity and the Irish people’s obsession with rain, in all its forms, as a topic of conversation.
An Post Commercial Marketing Director, Fiona Heffernan said “An Post is delighted to issue this novel stamp, with popular expressions for rain in both Irish and English. We know this will appeal to the Irish public as a reflection of themselves but will also to visitors to Ireland who expect and anticipate rain as an essential part of their visit.” ‘A Stamp for Ireland’ is the second stamp design by The Stone Twins who commented: “Amongst many things, Ireland is famous for its excessive rainfall. Without it, there would be no lush green fields, and wonderful crops, meat and dairy. Besides, rain is one of the defining characteristics of Irish identity and dominates much of social discourse.” Rainfall records in Ireland: The highest rainfall total (3,964.9mm) in Ireland was recorded at Ballaghbearna Gap, Co.Kerry in 1960 while Clonroche, Co. Wexford has the highest rainfall in an hour (52.2mm) on June 27, 1986. ‘A Stamp for Ireland’ is available at selected post offices nationwide and online at www.irishstamps.ie or from the Philatelic Bureau 01-7057400 from 21st February 2019. Whistleblower hands in resignation A garda whistleblower, who had been off on stress leave since making a disclosure to management about the behaviour of some officers within a garda district, as well as specific actions of one of her superiors, has resigned. It is believed the garda handed in her papers earlier this week and is said to be devastated by the way in which she was treated by management. Her protected disclosure was made at the start of 2016 and a chief superintendent was appointed to investigate it. Statements from officers based at the station were taken in May 2016. The senior officers against whom the allegations were made were also formally interviewed at this time. The final file was sent to the commissioner’s office in February 2017 and the whistleblower has not heard anything since – other than that the file is being processed.
No progress in Vietnam for Trump The much anticipated political meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un in Vietnam did not live up to either of the parties desires. Trump arrived in Vietnam in recent days hoping to persuade Kim to denuclearise The Korean Peninsula. While Kim arrived hoping he can lift the sanctions held against North Korea and potentially bring a peace deal that could end The Korean War. Talks eventually collapsed after
Kim wanted all sanctions lifted in exchange for the closure of his Yongbyon Nuclear Facility. Mr Trump declined saying “those demands are unacceptable” instead he believes it is best to work towards a good deal instead of a bad one. “It was all about the sanctions,” the US President told a news conference afterwards. According to President Trump “sometimes you have to walk,” but he added his relationship with Kim is still strong.

Dingle Gin wins ‘World’s Best Gin’ An innovative West Kerry company who developed their own gin has won ‘Overall Best in World’ at the World Gin Awards Ceremony 2019. Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) congratulated the Dingle Whiskey Distillery in London this week. “We’d like to congratulate all the team at the Dingle Whiskey Distillery for this wonderful accomplishment, which is another sign of Irish gin going from strength to strength on the highly competitive international stage,” Patricia Callan, Director of Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) said. “It demonstrates how quality and authenticity is helping brands like Dingle
Gin to stand out. In 2018, Irish gin grew in both the domestic and export markets.” There are now over 20 gin producers and over 50 gin brands in Ireland, with 12 new brands introduced in 2018, she added. “The value of exports of Irish gin from the Republic of Ireland was up 260 percent in 2018. “As the Irish gin supply base expands in response to global trends, double-digit growth was recorded in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Italy and Germany.”
During a lovely afternoon in the German town of Bensheim an eager overweight rodent tried to squeeze its way through a manhole. Unfortunately its chubbiness prevented it from getting through and it got stuck! A large scale rescue operation commenced with up to nine people, including firefighters and animal experts, helping to free the fat rat. The rat was eventually freed and after some close up photographs and videos, she returned to the sewers – but also became a viral sensation.
Ray D’Arcy has taken up the voluntary role of National Ambassador for Organ Donor Awareness Week 2019.
New ambassador for Organ New viral ‘Momo Challenge’ targets children and adolescents Donor Awareness announced The sinister ‘Momo Challenge’ which targets children through WhatsApp and other social media applications – has hit Ireland. A hoax internet challenge, ‘Momo’ was spread by users on Facebook and media outlets over the past week. Children and adolescents are being enticed by a user named ‘Momo’ to perform a series of dangerous tasks including violent attacks and even suicide. The Whatsapp profile includes a creepy face of a woman who appears while children may be watching videos on YouTube. There were reports this week that ‘Momo’ contacted a three-year old girl from Limerick who was watching videos on her tablet – and instructed the child to “go turn the oven on and leave it on”. The Gardaí have expressed concern of the extremely disturbing matter and have warned parents to be more aware what their children’s online activity. YouTube spoke out this week about the challenge. “We want to clear something up regarding the ‘Momo Challenge’. We’ve seen
no recent evidence of videos promoting the ‘Momo Challenge’ on YouTube. Videos encouraging harmful and dangerous challenges are against our policies. “If you see videos promoting harmful or dangerous challenges on YouTube, we encourage you to flag them to us immediately. These challenges are clearly against our Community Guidelines.” Also Children of the Digital Age issued a statement in recent days. “Due to a large number of videos aimed at children on both YouTube and YouTube Kids, containing content relating to self- harm and suicide, we are asking that parents immediately remove access to both Apps. “Over the last number of days, we have viewed some very disturbing content being placed in the middle of cartoons. A parent also sent us examples of graphic violence and adult themes in children's cartoons. There is a responsibility on Google, the owner of YouTube, to moderate the content being posted. Until such time as this happens we are recommending the removal of the Apps from devices that children have access to.”
The Irish Kidney Association is delighted to announce that Ray D’Arcy has agreed to the voluntary role of ambassador for Organ Donor Awareness 2019.
Ray, the popular RTÉ TV and radio broadcaster was also the ambassador for the campaign two decades ago. Since then he has continued to champion the life-saving cause on national airwaves. He will front the 2019 Organ Donor Awareness Week campaign which will take place from March 30 until April 6, encouraging the public to support organ donation for transplantation by letting their loved ones know their wishes. Ray will feature in radio advertising and posters as well as attending the national launch of 2019 Organ Donor Awareness at the Mansion House Dublin on Tuesday, March 26. The focus of Organ Donor Awareness Week is to remind individuals to talk to their families about their organ donation wishes and keep the reminders of their decision visible by carrying the organ donor card and permitting Code
115 to be included on their driver’s licence or downloading the ‘digital organ donor card’ APP to their smartphone. “It’s such an honour to be asked to be ambassador for this year’s campaign,” Ray said. “Organ donation is something that I feel very strongly about. Listening to people’s stories down through the years about organ transplantation, dialysis and organ donation, sometimes heart-warming and at other times heart-wrenching, I honestly believe that there is no better gift in life than the gift of organ donation.” Information fact files, which accompany the free organ donor cards, are obtainable from the Irish Kidney Association and are available nationwide from pharmacies, GP surgeries and post offices. Organ Donor Cards can also be obtained by phoning the Irish Kidney Association on 01 6205306 or free text the word DONOR to 50050. Our hands are on show and in use all of the time so it’s important to look after them. During a manicure nails are filed and shaped to your desired shape. The hands are soaked in warm water to softening the cuticle, and then the dead skin is removed off the nail bed using a nail drill. A hand massage is then performed triggering the arm's reflexology point. Paraffin treatment can be added at this point for a real luxury feel. It really works amazing by re-energising tried achy hands, arthritis and dry skin. The manicure is then finished with OPI nail polish; base coat, two coats of colour and top coat. Successful move to the Reeks Gateway for Carry Out Off Licence Having traded successfully for 15 years on the opposite side of the road it was a big step to take the plunge and move over to the Reeks Gateway development in July 2018. In fact, we regularly hear of returning visitors to Killarney automatically going to the old unit and finding it shut before realising that we have moved.
That said, our new store with its floor to ceiling windows and proximity to one of the main roundabouts entering the town, gives us the type of visibility that
we could not have dreamt of before the move. The unique design of the store, which emphasises the uncovered concrete, has a warehouse vibe with metal panelling and bespoke shelving. As such it has become a drive-to destination for the people of Killarney and further afield. Indeed people in the off licence
trade have come from all over the country to see the new layout which has become the new flagship store within the Carry Out group of more than 100 other outlets. The increased space has also allowed us to extend our range with a particular focus on quality wines, craft beers and the expanding category of non-alcoholic drinks. Undoubtedly we have one of the most extensive product ranges in the entire south west of the country. It is, however, in the areas of rare and limited edition Irish and Scotch whiskey that we have seen tremendous growth and opportunity. As well as our own fine collection in store we have become a point of contact for many collectors all over the country because of our access to once-off releases from the best distilleries in Ireland. For example we are the sole agent for the second release of the amazing Portmagee nine year old whiskey outside of the immediate vicinity of the town itself. Even though we have a substantial percentage of the entire release for sale, this highly collectible whiskey will still be sold out in a matter of days! The move to the Reeks Gateway has been a successful one so far for Carry Out and we look forward to another 15 years and more looking after all our customers and friends!

New diesels emit almost no fumes A new series of independent tests show that the modern fleet of diesel engines emits almost none of the poisonous Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) that were at the heart of the Dieselgate scandal. Diesel combustion has been the automotive whipping boy of Europe, with sales of new diesel cars dropping from more than half the market to less than a third since 2015 and several German cities ordering to ban older diesel engines, causing many brands to axe diesels altogether. Yet it turns out car-makers were right when they insisted, they could clean their diesel engines up, with premium manufacturers leading the way. With exhaust gas recirculation (SCR) and urea injection, the Mercedes-Benz C 220d led the way in the independent tests, emitting no NOx at all during an onroad test. While the C 220d emitted zero micrograms of NOx per kilometre, the BMW

520d proved the Benz figure was no fluke by emitting just 1mg/km on the same test. The legal (Euro 6d Temp) limit for NOx emissions is 168mg/km, and it was the failure to meet this limit that lead the Volkswagen Group down the path to the Dieselgate scandal. Conducted by the German car club ADAC under RDE (Real Driving Emissions) on public roads, the test involved 13 models including cars from Audi, Honda, Citroen, Kia, Opel, Peugeot, Volvo and Volkswagen.

Students learn lifesaving skills First Responder and Killarney Community College Spanish teacher Ms Duggan along with fellow teacher Ms O'Sullivan recently attended the 'CPR 4 Schools' course and received a kit with 10 manikins from Irish Heart Foundation. Local Killarney man and fellow First Responder Leo O'Connor came to the school last week and worked with a group of First Years lucky enough to learn many important First Aid skills that may someday save the life of someone they know. "Our students learned an incredible life skill,” Miss Duggan said. “Hopefully they will never have to use these techniques. The availability and accessibility of our own manikins provides a huge advantage in upskilling our students with these lifesaving skills." Killarney Toastmasters OPEN EVENING: Every chair was filled at the open evening on January 22 as crowds gathered to listen to some thought provoking speeches on a diverse range of topics. Based at the Dromhall Hotel, visitors had the chance to get a taste of what the group have to offer by listening to prepared and impromptu speeches. Shane’s speech provoked plenty of interest among members of the audience who could all apply the financial theory of ‘returns’ to everyday life. Meanwhile, Miriam gave an inspirational speech about how Toastmasters has afforded her the opportunity to develop in so many ways. Debby, utilising her knowledge of gardening, provided an in-depth account of garden economics. All of the speeches made on the night must have struck a chord with the audience as a number of people have since expressed an interest in joining, and subsequent meetings have been incredibly busy. The table topics session at recent meetings has generated a huge level of interest, with most if not all in attendance managing to make a special contribution - a sure sign of success. We are always looking for new members. People are welcome to sample the meetings to see if they wish to join. If you would like to explore the amazing world of public speaking and develop your leadership skills, why not come along to one of our Tuesday evening meetings. We even manage to make time for a nice cuppa! The Killarney Toastmasters Club meets the second and last Tuesday of every month, from 8pm to 10pm, at the Dromhall Hotel. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to take it at their own pace. Yes, the club acknowledges that we all have different abilities and priorities.

7TH ANNIVERSARY DALY
In loving memory of our much loved youngest brother Paul O’Connor, Roseville Ave, Muckross Road, Killarney Whose 4th anniversary occurs on March 5th. You burst into this sleeping world, On a pleasant Autumn day, Life for us soared to an high, Till you were called away. You were a gift from Jesus, To a humble, mortal clan, You showed us how to laugh and sing, And how to be a man. On that bright spring day when you left us, When you could give no more, The lord had chosen to bless you, And return you to his own shore.
O’CONNOR
In loving memory of Paul O’Connor Late of Anfield House, 9 Roseville Avenue, Who died on the 5th of March 2015. I am a sailor, you’re my first mate, We signed on together, We coupled our fate Hauled up our anchor, Determined not to fail For the hearts’ treasure, together we set sail. With no maps to guide us, We steered our own course, Rode out the storms, When the winds were gale force, Sat out the doldrums in patience and hope, Working together we learned how to cope Life is an ocean and love is a boat, In troubled water that keeps us afloat, When we started the voyage, There was just me and you, Now gathered round us, We have our own crew.
In loving memory of Mary McGough, Coolroe Faha, Killarney Who died on 8th March 2014. R.I.P.

Three years have gone, Since we have seen your loving face, Felt your kisses and warm embrace. There was magic in Mom’s touch, And sunshine in her smile, There was magic in everything she did, To make our lives worthwhile. We can find both hope and courage, Just by looking in her eyes, Her laughter was a source of joy, Her works were warm and wise. There was kindness and compassion, To be found in her embrace, As we look up, we can see The light of heaven, Shining on Mom’s face. Missed beyond words, Loved beyond measure, Our Mother was truly one of life’s treasures. Loved and dearly missed by sons Denis & Jamie and daughters Bernadette, Rosemarie & Elaine, and extended family.

In loving memory of my wonderful Papa Albert Klausner Formerly Salzburg, Austria and Gortroe, Fossa, who died on February 27th 2014.
In loving memory of my father Paddy Leahy Who died on the 1st of March 2007.
Each day as evening starts to set, The ache builds in my chest, I know that I must go to bed, And try to get some rest.
That moment that you died, My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you.
I hug my tear-stained pillow close, When no one is around, And cry for the one I loved and lost, And scream without a sound.
I often lie awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon my cheek.
When I became a woman He walked me down the aisle, And gave me away With a bittersweet smile.
Others see me in the day, And think I’m doing well, But everyday as evening sets, I enter my own hell.
Remembering you is easy, I do it every day, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away.
And when I gave birth, He was there too, To greet my little one and say Hello, I love you.
Time hasn’t healed my pain at all, Or quieted my fears, So every night, alone in bed, I shed those silent tears.
I hold you close within my heart, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again.
Goodbye my love, Goodbye, My love will never die, And when my life is through, God will lead me straight to you.
Loved and missed always Your loving son Albi and Tina xxx

I have to admit that I was a Daddy’s girl. He told me he loved better Than anything else in the world.
In loving memory of my wonderful Papa Albert Klausner Formerly of Salzburg, Austria and late of Gortroe, Fossa, Killarney Who died in Germany on February 27th 2014. Some days I hear your voice And turn to see your face; Yet in my turning, It seems the sound has been erased. Who will I turn to for answers When life does not make sense; Who will be there to hold me close When the pieces just don’t fit. Oh, Papa, if I could turn back time And once more hear your voice; I’d tell you that out of all the papas You would still be my choice. Please always know I love you And no one can take your place; The years may come and go But your memory will never be erased. Today, Jesus, as You are listening In your home above; Would you go and find my papa And give him all my love. Love and miss you always. Denis, life is not measured, By the years you have lived, But the love that you gave, And the things that you did. Kindness was your nature, True were your ways, Memories we will treasure, For the rest of our days Such a shock the day you left us, But we were very much aware, The mark you left on everyone, By the congregation there. Our world was truly shattered, But it made us realise, You were such a wonderful person, In so many people’ eyes. No one knew that morning, What sorrow the day would bring, When a golden heart stopped beating, And we could not do a thing. You never said goodbye to us, Perhaps it’s just as well, For we could not have said goodbye, To someone we loved so well. So sadly missed every minute of every day & will never be forgotten
In loving memory of the late Mary McLoughlin Who died on the 6th March 2017. Late of Ballydowney, Ardaneanig, Millstreet and London. Running away with it Tom the Dancer stars as Kerry win again | By Adam Moynihan
The Killarney Advertiser carried out a survey back in January asking Kerry supporters to predict how their team would fare in the 2019 National League. I’d say we’ll have to send our readers back to the polls. 22.9% of respondents feared that Kerry would get relegated this year while just 2.4% thought The Kingdom would win it out. Five short weeks later and the green and gold are sitting pretty at the top of Division 1 on the back of four impressive victories over Tyrone, Cavan, Dublin and Monaghan. It was billed as an extremely difficult start but Kerry have been dogged and you would have to say that despite a couple of close run things, they
have been good value for each of their victories to date. It was business as usual for Peter Keane’s side against Galway last weekend. A few eyebrows were raised when the team was named (not for the first time this season), but the performance was typically workmanlike as the visitors just about escaped from Tuam with the spoils. In the end, a moment of magic from substitute Tomás Ó Sé gave Kerry the upper
hand as he out-ran the Galway defence to kick a huge score at a crucial juncture. “Out-ran” being the operative word here because the renowned dancer from An Ghaeltacht definitely travelled en route to goal. Depending on how generous you want to be about it, he took 10-12 steps at one stage without playing the ball. But look, he hasn’t played much football in the past 12 months. The rules will come back to him. Following this victory and Mayo’s defeat to Dublin, Kerry are now two points clear at the top of the league and they are odds-on favourites to make the final, which will take place in Croke Park on March 31. One worry for Peter Keane is the fact that Kerry have failed to score a goal in three of their four games so far. Having said that, with Paul Geaney, James
“A few eyebrows were raised when the team was named but the performance was typically workmanlike.” O’Donoghue and David Clifford all expected to return to the fold sooner rather than later, The Kingdom are likely to carry more of a goal threat in the coming weeks and months. By all accounts Clifford is close to full fitness and the Fossa youngster could make his comeback against Mayo in two weeks’ time.

A win for Kerry could guarantee final spot NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1
________________________________________________________________________
Kerry v Monaghan Sunday at 3pm Fitzgerald Stadium
Top plays bottom in Killarney on Sunday as league leaders Kerry host Monaghan in the Park. Victory for Kerry could guarantee their spot in the 2019 Division 1 final, but only if second place Mayo defeat fourth place Galway in Castlebar the night before. The Kingdom have great momentum right now and they will be expected to deal with Monaghan at home, although the most recent fixture between the two showed just how dangerous Malachy O’Rourke’s side can be. Kerry had a fairly consistent line-up for their opening three games but a number of new faces came in last weekend and did well, which makes this week’s team very hard to predict. Shane Ryan had been faultless up until the Galway game but he made a couple of poor mistakes the last day. Whether or not that will open the door enough for Brian Kelly to get a look-in remains
to be seen. Jack Sherwood and Peter Crowley have been ever-present in the full back line and Shane Enright and the returning Brian Ó Beaglaoich are both in contention for the remaining corner back position. The half back line is likely to contain the reliable pairing of Paul Murphy and Tom O’Sullivan with either Gavin Crowley or Tadhg Morley at right half back. Jack Barry, who has played every minute of Kerry’s league campaign to date, will probably start again at midfield. Alongside whom is anyone’s guess. In the forwards, young Diarmuid O’Connor from Na Gaeil is the only player really looking over his shoulder. He has been taken off at half time in two of Kerry’s four games and with Mikey Geaney, Jonathan Lyne and Kevin McCarthy knocking on the door, he might find himself starting from the bench on Sunday. Monaghan will no doubt lean heavily on the kicking of talismanic full forward Conor McManus, who put Kerry to the sword in the Super 8s last year. It will be interesting to see how our new full back Jack Sherwood fares in what will be another stern test of his defensive abilities. Malachy O’Rourke’s side will be desperate to pick up a win in Killarney. They have now lost three games in a row since defeating Dublin in their season opener on January 27.

Lucky @AdvertiserSport Twitter follower wins €100 voucher for Kerry GAA Store Killarney man John Paul O’Callaghan is the envy of Kerry fans everywhere after scooping a €100 voucher for the Kerry GAA Store. John Paul was one of almost 200 entrants who followed Killarney Advertiser Sport on Twitter and retweeted the competition post, and the Kerry fan was delighted to discover on Tuesday that he had claimed the coveted prize. The voucher certainly went to a worthy recipient as John Paul purchases Kerry gear for himself and his family every year. Speaking at the prizegiving, Adam Moynihan of the Killarney Advertiser said the competition had been a great success. “It worked out very well. Fair play to (Kerry GAA Store Manager) Luke Quinn, he offered up an excellent prize
and there was a lot of interest over the past the couple of weeks. “From our point of view, we were hoping to gain a few followers and raise awareness about our account and it definitely helped in that regard. We’re now up to 550 followers and it’s steadily growing all the time. “The Kerry GAA Store were very obliging and we even got some coverage from Paul Galvin who shared our photo and competition info with his 160,000 Twitter and Instagram followers. “It has certainly increased awareness about what we’re all about and we’re already looking forward to similar giveaways in the future.” For up-to-the-minute updates on the latest sports news from Killarney, Kerry and beyond, follow @AdvertiserSport today.

Dingle and the Sem must do it all again CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ FINAL _________________________________________________________________________
St Brendan’s College 1-9 | PS Chorca Dhuibhne 0-12 FITZGERALD STADIUM
| By Eamonn Fitzgerald
St Brendan’s College and Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne must do it all again after they played out a draw in the final of Corn Uí Mhuirí at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday last. The replay has been fixed for the Austin Stack Park, Tralee tomorrow (Saturday). Throw-in is at 2pm. The Sem played against the strong downfield breeze in the first half and the Dingle boys exerted great pressure. The Sem had an oustanding defender in corner back Mark Cooper who repelled several of the attacks but the local boys still trailed by five points to two at the
interval. Brendan’s had plenty of possession but kicked several wides. Ryan O’Grady did come close to scoring a goal but his effort was repelled by Seamus Ó Loingsigh. Much was expected of St Brendan’s after the restart and they got a real boost in
The St Brendan's College team who drew with Dingle in the Munster final.
the 41st minute when the impressive full forward Emmet O’Shea crashed a great shot to the Dingle net after the goalkeeper had made a superb initial save. This was the break the Sem needed and it put them ahead. I expected them to kick on for victory, especially with those points scored by Paul O’Shea and Patrick D’Arcy. Cathal Ó Beaglaioch did great work at midfield for the Dingle men and kick-started their revival. They had points from Dylan Ó Geibheannaigh, Ruaidhrí and Cathal Ó Beaglaioch to level the game and take it to a replay in Tralee tomorrow. St Brendan’s lead the way in this competition with 22 titles. Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne is a relatively new school but it has been very successful winning the title every year from 2012 to 2015 and again in 2018. The Sem won their recent titles in 2016 and in 2017. The 2019 Munster champions will meet the Leinster winners in the Hogan Cup series on March 23. The final is fixed for April 6.

Kerry Scór hopefuls ready for Munster finals This Saturday at 6pm the City Hall Cork will host this year’s Munster Finals of Scór Sinsear and Kerry will be represented in six of the seven categories. No doubt they will face tough opposition from Cork, Clare, Tipperary, Limerick and Waterford as always. Kerry have been very successful at this level going back through the years and they are all just one step away from competing in an All-Ireland Final. The final discipline of the evening will be the Set Dancing competition and it’s quite a while since Gneeveguilla reached this stage of the competition. However, if their performances to date are anything to go by they are sure to be well in the mix for honours. Their line-up will include Joan Brosnan, Kieran Brown, Kieran Dalton, Michelle Brosnan, Rachel McGillicuddy, Conor Crowley, Cathal Collins and Michelle O’Sullivan. All of the winners on the day will go forward to the final at the Travellers Friend Theatre in Castlebar on Saturday, April 13. The County Finals of the Scór Sinsear in Quiz (four per team) is pencilled in for Friday March 8 at the Centre of Excellence in Currow with a starting time of 7pm. This is for over 17s only. This discipline has been changed for the past few years so now all clubs in the county will come together with the outright winner on the evening going forward to the All-Ireland Finals in Castlebar.

Lakers need to snap cold streak NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 1
________________________________________________________________________________________
Scotts Lakers v Bad Bob’s Tolka Rovers Saturday at 7.30pm Killarney Sports Centre
| By Adam Moynihan
The Lakers host the dubiously named Bad Bob’s Tolka Rovers on Saturday night and with just three games remaining in the regular season, Cormac O’Donoghue’s side will be more than a little anxious to get back to winning ways. After an extended period of dominance that saw them win 11 games out of 12, the Lakers came up short against the Dublin Lions and DBS Éanna in recent weeks and a third consecutive defeat this weekend would be major blow. The Lions and Éanna are two of the strongest teams in the division but players and management know that
this is the wrong time of the year to get into a losing habit. The major concern for the Lakers at the minute is the lack of bodies at their disposal. Coach Cormac O’Donoghue has been relying on just seven or eight players in recent weeks which means that his key players have been playing additional minutes. It has been a long
season so O’Donoghue would no doubt prefer to rest players where appropriate but it appears as though his hands are tied at this juncture. There doesn’t appear to be a quick fix for the Lakers as the players who have dropped out appear unlikely to return in the near future. If guys have other commitments with work etc. that’s fair enough but you have to wonder how you can start with a squad of 13 or 14, win a bunch of games to put yourself in contention, and then end up losing five or six players halfway through the campaign. Whatever the reasons behind it, the club will surely need to do a better job of holding onto their players moving forward. Tomorrow night’s opponents are currently fourth in the north so it’s looking like the playoffs are just out of reach, but the Dubliners are sure to provide another tricky test for the home team. Former Lehigh forward Justin Goldsborough (pictured) and Ukrainian Alex Dolenko will require special attention if the Lakers are to prevail.

Fuller the hero as Killarney clinch cup MARTIN O’SULLIVAN CUP FINAL _____________________________________________________
Killarney 20 | Killorglin 14 IRISH INDEPENDENT PARK (CORK)
Killarney's captain Peter Kelly raised the cup and then stood on the table to announce to supporters that age "is just a number". In a closely fought and at times nerve-wracking encounter at Irish Independent Park in Cork, Killarney triumphed over their neighbours Killorglin thanks to a late try by Brendan Fuller. Killorglin enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and had a chance to open the scoring six minutes in with a penalty. That attempt was missed but another penalty on eight minutes was kicked to the corner and despite some desperate defence from Killarney, Killorglin opened the scoring with a try at the Dolphin end of the ground. An excellent touchline conversion left Killorglin ahead by 7-0 with 10 minutes played. Killarney finally got the scoreboard
moving after 16 minutes with a penalty by Oisín O’Shea to leave the score at Killarney 3-7 Killorglin. Killarney began to apply pressure and centre Mike Sheahan burst through a few minutes later to score a fine try. O'Shea's conversion put Killarney ahead for the first time, 10-7. On the half-hour mark, Killarney had a chance to increase their lead with a penalty for a high tackle but they failed to move the scoreboard. A dynamic attack along the right touchline just failed as the final pass to Aaron Jones went astray. From the resulting scrum, Killarney appeared to have the Killorglin pack going backwards but the referee disagreed and Killorglin were able to clear their lines.
The tide then turned and Killorglin had two opportunities to level the game. Firstly, with a penalty for offside just inside the Killarney half which dropped just short. Killarney failed to clear decisively and an extended period of Killorglin pressure led to a second penalty, this time for not rolling away. Thankfully for Killarney, the attempt was unsuccessful and they still led at 10-7 at the break. Killarney opened the second half much improved but gained no immediate reward. Then a slick team move and good support saw the ball pass through several sets of hands before Paudie Sheahan scored in the corner at the Dolphin end. The difficult conversion was not successful but Killarney now pushed their lead out to 15-7. Needing at least two scores, Killorglin exerted huge pressure and Killarney's transgressions brought a yellow card for Paul O'Sullivan in the 56th minute. With the one-man advantage, Killorglin caused Killarney major problems and they finally broke through in the 64th minute with a try in the left corner at the Sunday's Well end. Another excellent touchline conversion brought Killorglin

within a point. Killarney 15-14 Killorglin. The remaining 15 minutes were tense. An excellent break by scrum half Paul O'Sullivan after his short breather had the Killorglin defence in disarray and super support play saw Brendan Fuller score in the corner on 72 minutes. The difficult conversion - which could have seen Killarney push the lead out to two scores - was unsuccessful so the lead remained at a precarious six points with the clock winding down. Killorglin exerted huge pressure for the remainder of the game but Killarney resisted with some tremendous defence, albeit with the loss of the substitute hooker to a yellow card. Lock Darren was also stretchered off with a nasty knee injury (thankfully he returned to take part in the celebrations). Despite huge territorial pressure by Killorglin, Killarney's defence was able to force errors and gain a breather. A final attack by Killorglin ran out of room on the right touchline and when the winger was unable to keep the ball infield, the referee blew it up Final score in Irish Independent Park: Killarney 20-14 Killorglin.

Killarney Athletic v Killarney Celtic Sunday at 2pm Woodlawn
| By Adam Moynihan
Killarney Celtic will be hoping to extend their commanding lead at the summit of the Kerry Premier Division when they make the short trip to Woodlawn to face bitter rivals Athletic on Sunday. The Celts are currently seven points clear of second place Castleisland and with games running our for the chasing pack, it appears as though the reigning champions are well on their way to another league final at the end of the season. While the club will be disappointed to have exited the national and provincial competitions when they did, they have looked very strong in Kerry all year and they will take some beating if they’re to be denied another league title. Athletic, meanwhile, find themselves sixth and while they’re not out of the running as things stand, they will need to start getting results sooner rather than later. Stuart Templeman will certainly be hoping for a better showing from his players than the one he got in the last derby when Celtic won 5-0. The Blues weren’t at the races at all that day but this is a good opportunity to make amends. Things haven’t gone exactly to plan for Athletic so far this season but they have Celtic winger Wayne Sparling has enough talent in their ranks to pose any scored 10 goals in all competitions. orsport - used #29 for his debut in 2017. He has opted to use #66 given it is the number with which McLaren took its first Indy 500 victory with Mark Donohue in 1972. Donohue used #66 in all five of his Indy 500 appearances with Roger Penske and both of his starts with a McLaren chassis. His only victory came in 1972 when, after a race of high attrition, he was able to lead the final 13 laps and deliver a win that included a new average speed record. Alonso's McLaren entry for the Indy 500 will be powered by Chevrolet's twin-turbocharged V6. Chevrolet is the defending winner of the race, having taken Will Power's Penske entry to victory last May. Alonso starred in his first attempt on the Indy 500 in 2017, as he qualified on the second row and then led 27 laps before his Honda engine expired. To date, Englishman Graham Hill is the only driver to have completed the Triple Crown of the Monaco Grand Prix, 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indy 500.
