OFFICIAL OPENING: Kerry Branch of the Irish Kidney Association officers Theresa Looney (Secretary), Connie Brosnan (Chairman) and Debbie Templeton (Treasurer) in Killarney Kidney House, the new Holiday and Respite Centre opened by the Irish Kidney Association. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
New kidney patient facility opens today in Killarney A new holiday house for kidney transplant patients and those on dialysis will officially open today (Friday) in Killarney
| By Sean Moriarty The new facility, on the grounds of Killarney Holiday Village on the Muckross Road, will allow patients enjoy a holiday while undergoing treatment or those recovering from a transplant operation. The house will be dedicated to the memory of the late Tom Fleming, the former Chairman of the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association. He died in 2014 after
receiving four kidney transplants in his lifetime. The house has been in operation since June but today’s event will mark the official opening of the facility and the handing over of a cheque from fundraising efforts from the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle this year. So far the local branch of the IKA have raised over €180,000 for the facility, mainly through the annual Ring of Kerry
Cycle, but fundraising remains on-going to pay for the upkeep of the house and to purchase additional equipment. Back in 2016 the Kerry branch received €176,000 from the cycle and additional events like their annual Ring of Kerry Honda 50 Run helped buy the house. This year’s donation will go towards the upkeep and maintenance of the holiday home. The house is furnished to a high standard, most of the fixtures and furnishings were donated by local businesses and local trades people carried out the work. Currently there are 52 people on dialy-
sis in Kerry and they must attend clinics, three days a week in University Hospital Kerry. The facility is suitable for patients who can self-treat and one of the bedrooms in the house is converted into a home dialysis unit. “This is a tangible asset,” Theresa Looney, Local Branch Secretary and Patient Support Officer told the Killarney Advertiser. “People who donated or supported our events can see exactly where their money is being spent.” The IKA is holding its annual board meeting in the Killarney Oaks Hotel today. It is hoped that they will be impressed enough by the high-class facilities. The Killarney facility is the second one in the county, an existing holiday house in Tralee has been in operation since 2006. “The one in Tralee is fabulous too,” added Theresa. “There are apartments in Tramore but they would not be as well-kitted out as here. This is an example of what can be done and we hope that it would encourage the board to do more up and down the country.” Patients can liaise with the IKA’s head office in Dublin and they will allocate a week’s holiday at the house while at the same time booking in their thrice-weekly treatments at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) in Tralee. The level of service, all provided by volunteers, would put the facility on par with a four-star hotel. “One of the jarveys here in town is a patient and his daughter comes and takes the visitors on jaunting car rides around the lakes,” added Theresa. “It is a great location for a holiday, the Oaks Hotel is right next door and staff will drop meals over if people are not up for moving.” Earlier today members of the Kerry branch brought IKA board members on a factory tour to Astellas Pharma in Killorglin as the medication used for preventing organ rejection after a heart, kidney, or liver transplant is manufactured there.
Killarney behind when it comes to grant funding | By Anne Lucey Municipal districts in Kerry show marked difference in their ability and success in drawing down matching central Government funding for projects in their towns - with Killarney trailing far behind Tralee as well as the much smaller Listowel. Budget documents released at a series of individual Municipal District budget meetings at Aras an Chontae Tralee as of last Friday revealed how projects to
the value of €7.5 million were netted by Tralee in 2019. In contrast, Killarney’s efforts netted €1.64 million grants for projects with a total value of €2.5 million. It is understood that Killarney put forward a number of projects including a redesign of the Haha and the Flesk cycleway and walkway, but most were turned down. The Killarney projects which did attract grants this year included the redevelopment of the Cultural Centre €120,000 of tourism grants; public Wi-Fi in the town centre €30,000; promotion of cycling stands €16,000; Kenmare Road
Parking areas upgrade €160,000 along with monies for schemes in Rathmore and Barraduff. The Áras Phádraig “Masterplan” got a grant of €112,000 while €15,000 from the Department of Children went towards the playground extension; there was €25,000 towards the Killarney Micro Track Project and two men’s shed projects netted €8,600 in Community Enhancement support grants. The Listowel District had managed to draw down €3.9 million in grants in 2019. Mayor of Kerry, Killarney councillor Niall
Kelleher said projects like the Haha may be eligible for funding from the roads authority this year. He voted against the 2020 budget plan for Killarney because the town does not get its fair share. The five other Killarney councillors sought updates on the Bohereen na Goun, Pretty Polly and Áras Phádraig projects, before approving the draft plan. The allocation for Killarney in 2020 is just over €402,000, which could attract in far more in terms of grants, Town Manager Angela McAllen outlined.

KDYS aim for second quality centre award
On Tuesday KDYS eurÓg Centre, Killarney hosted the Council of Europe as part of a formal assessment for the awarding of the COE Quality Label for Youth Centres. | By Michelle Crean BOOK LAUNCH: Pat Sweeney, Dermot Griffin, Pat Spillane (guest of honour), and Dermot Clifford (Chairman) seated, with Peter Kelliher, Shane Kelly, Theresa Kissane, Pat O'Donoghue, Marie Murphy and Pat Sheehan at the launch of Fossa GAA Club's 50th anniversary book ‘Fossa GAA: A Sense of Place’ on Friday night. Fossa GAA launch 50th anniversary book Fossa GAA club marked its 50th anniversary on Friday night by launching a new book that traces the first half century of club. | By Sean Moriarty ‘Fossa GAA: A Sense of Place’ traces the history of the club from its humble beginnings in 1969 to the present day. The book, a pictorial history of the last 50 years, also features articles and snippets of some of the characters attached to the club over the last five decades. The book was launched by former Kerry football hero and current RTE pundit Pat Spillane. It was also attended by the Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher, and Mayor of Killarney Cllr Michael Gleeson. “It was great night,” Club Chairman, Dermot Clifford, told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are loads of photos in the book, it is a very colourful archive and a trip down memory lane.” The club may be celebrating its 50th anniversary but Dermot believes the membership has laid down a perfect foundation for the next 50 years. The club is home to county star David
Clifford, the first player from the club to make it to both a minor and senior county team. Next weekend, the East Kerry Divisional side will tackle the County Senior football final. David Clifford will line out for East Kerry marking the first time since Cian Long’s 1995 appearance that a club member will contest a county decider. “Reaching 50 years is very much a milestone, and that is a credit to the people who took the brave steps in setting up the club,” added Dermot. “But now that the first 50 years are out of the way we can look forward to the next 50 and that is down to our great underage structure. There was a time when the club did not have the belief it could field county players, we were competing against clubs that are over 100 years old.” Books are on sale in The Golden Nugget Bar, Restaurant and Off-Licence, Foley’s Spar Fossa and from any committee member.

Gordana Berjan, Executive Director of the European Youth Centre Budapest and the Council of Europe Quality Label programme, was in Kerry to represent their expert team. Killarney Municipal District Mayor, Cllr Michael Gleeson, was on hand to formally welcome the Council of Europe to Killarney. The eurÓg Centre is seeking renewal of this award after becoming the only Centre in Ireland to achieve this status three years ago. If successful, KDYS will hold the Quality Label for a further five years. The Centre has just completed the development of an onsite accommodation facility with a capacity to host groups of up to 49 people. This will enhance the expansion of the programme offerings which have Human Right Education at their foundation and support ongoing engagement with COE to enhance learning and development opportunities for both young people and youth workers. These new programmes have already seen groups of Kerry young people travel to various parts of Europe exploring very relevant issues with their peers from different countries. One such example is the Kerry Comhairle Na nÓg group under
Kerry County Council coordinated by KDYS. A delegation attended the European Youth Event in Strasbourg earlier this year. They presented their learning from this event to Kerry County Council members at KDYS eurÓg on Tuesday. In addition, the Kerry Comhairle group recently completed a survey on facilities for young people in Kerry, and the group also presented their findings at the event. “This is a very appropriate moment for this survey to be unveiled as the Council of Europe were present to give an input into the role of Youth Centres in Europe,” Tim O’Donoghue, KDYS eurOg Director, said. Kerry County Councillors and officials were present to hear and give their feedback also. The assessment of eurÓg took place from Monday, October 28 through to Wednesday 30. “The Kerry Comhairle Na nÓg event featured prominently as part of this process. Most importantly young people from all over Kerry had the opportunity to engage with Kerry County Council, the Council of Europe and KDYS to have their views heard and to directly receive a response in relation to what actions are in place to support Kerry’s youth.”

Killarney snap an RTÉ winner
A stunning image taken by a Barraduff man, featuring a young deer during sunrise, was this week featured on national television. | By Michelle Crean Seamus Long, who is a founding member of Killarney Camera Club, was thrilled to learn his creative shot captured in one of Killarney’s most beautiful locations was featured on RTÉ weather bulletins and chosen as the winner of the RTE Weather Autumn Photo Competition. It was shown at the beginning of all weather forecasts on RTÉ One on Monday and will also feature in the RTE Weather Calendar for 2020, which will be available in the RTÉ Guide this month. Seamus took the stunning image on September 14 and just entered the competition in time – the evening the competition was closing. It was taken down at the lower lake in Lough Lein at 7.45am, shortly after sunrise. And he says he almost didn’t enter it into the competition.
“My wife Josephine brought it to my attention a few weeks before when she saw it in the RTE Guide,” Seamus told the Killarney Advertiser. “That day she left the RTÉ Guide out for me with that page open and I entered it that evening.” Seamus said that he was pleasantly surprised last Saturday when he received an email from weather presenter Nuala Carey. “I was delighted. I was really surprised.” He added that he was patient that morning to try to get that perfect shot. “There was nice early light. You have to be patient when trying to get the perfect shot.” Killarney Camera Club are looking for new members and are inviting the public to attend their Open and Introductory Night on November 7, in the Killarney Heights Hotel at 7.30pm.
Sully (53) was rushed from University Hospital Kerry (UHK) to the Mater Hospital, Dublin after becoming seriously ill with sepsis last October. He was then transferred to Dun Laoghaire and months later back to UHK, where he is currently staying. He is expected to remain in hospital for at least another year. In the latest in a series of events to help his family off-set medical and other expenses, a table quiz is being organised by his family and friends. It was initially hoped that he would be able to return home in the next few months but additional complications mean his road to recovery is further down to the line. The Killarney man was hoping that once changes are made to convert parts of the family home he could leave hospital and focus on his future recovery. However, these changes have now been made but the much-loved local mechanic from Woodlawn will not be able to use them just yet.
John ‘Sully’ O’Sullivan
The fundraising table quiz, which is being organised by family friend Paul Cronin, is scheduled for next Saturday (November 8) at the Gleneagle Hotel. “His recovery is very slow, the hospital can’t seem to control the infection and he is looking at anything up to another year in hospital,” Paul told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was hoping to be home and all this work is done on the house. He was self-employed and funds are no-longer what they need to be.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Fine Gael’s vote this week is worrying “
The disastrous PR exercise for Fine Gael MEPs Mairead McGuinness the former journalist, Maria Walsh the ex-rose of Tralee who is famous for being the first gay rose, our own Sean Kelly who is famous for opening up Croke Park to rugby, and Frances Fitzgerald who is famous for nothing, lined up with the fascists and voted against the innocent enough looking resolution about sharing information by the rescue agencies. The anti-immigrant groups cheered. Of course they did. There is evidence that the rescue operations actually encourage trafficking - but that is neither here nor there – the fact is, until war, poverty and propaganda - the root causes of the massive migration from Africa and other poor countries - are tackled, people are drowning in the Med trying to get to the “Promised Land” of Europe, and they must be helped. FG aligned with the Far-Right and some would say this showed their true colours. It could not have been worse timing. Hours before their vote, some 39 people from Asia suffocated in the back of a trailer in Essex in a trafficking oper-
ation that seems increasingly to have its roots in and around the border area of Ireland. But this has been a very bad week for Fine Gael for other reasons too: very quietly the body of the Spanish FarRight and extreme Catholic dictator General Franco was exhumed from his grotesque, macabre mausoleum - built and surrounded mostly by the bodies of the defeated Republican prisoners. I visited the place many years ago and wasn’t in the better of it. The Generalissimo now lies alongside his wife in a quiet grave north of Madrid. It is a fact that Fine Gael’s origins lie in the same Fascist mire of the 1930s as Franco’s. Their first president/leader in 1933 was General Eoin O’Duffy, who raised the Irish brigade to fight for Francisco Franco during the Spanish Civil War. Lest we think this is all very far away and far from us - next time you pass Morley’s Bridge going into Kilgarvan, stop and see the monument to local man Michael Lehane, a labourer and trade unionist who also went to Spain. But Lehane went as part of the inter-
“FG aligned with the Far-Right and some would say this showed their true colours”
“
It was unfortunate timing for Fine Gael this week when their casting vote against easing the rescue operation of migrants from the Blue Mediterranean ended up being cheered by the Far-Right parties in the parliament – and, of course, in typical form Fianna Fail’s Billy Kelleher wasn’t even present for the vote!
national brigade alongside other trade unionists of the time beaten at home for fighting for basic human rights. Now, Fine Gael naturally have evolved with the times and the party led by a mixed race, gay Taoiseach would like to present themselves as ultra-liberal, anti-racist, but it makes you wonder is liberal in the modern Fine Gael sense the same thing as compassionate? Their vote in the European Parliament this week is worrying. Their shameful record on public housing and leaving it to the market is of course market liberalism - but this type of liberalism is not compassion. It is a great shame that the old Labour is not there anymore to round the hard edges of Fine Gael. One thing is sure: Fianna Fail are not offering anything like the same balance. They are not even turning up to vote and when they do their fingers are on the wrong buzzers!
St Patrick was captured as a slave Are we really surprised that the Irish, allegedly, are stuck right in the middle of global trafficking? St Patrick our national saint was captured as a slave and put to work as a swineherd up around the border area. 1600 years later, little appears to have changed apart from the length and complexity of the journey. We still need human labour for our restaurants, farms, fields and beauty salons. And while matters overall have improved, we are still pretty slack when it comes to labour conditions.
We are not serious about trafficking in this country as there hasn’t been a single prosecution, yet there is plenty of evidence, even in the courts, of trafficking and enslavement especially in drugs and brothels, where people are confined to tiny rooms and rarely see daylight. Most trafficking investigations, including one conducted on foot of a huge cannabis grow house in Tralee in 2013, come to nothing. We are doing a good job with liaison officers and such, but we need the stick as well as the carrot - and quite frankly the stick is not being applied.
It must be 15 years since I covered a case in Tralee District Court of the house in the Park Road Killarney with dozens of illegal Chinese all in the one house. There was huffing and puffing and all were to be deported at once. Around three weeks later I was in a Chinese restaurant - it no longer operates - and lo and behold the person serving my table was one of the women before the court in Tralee. It left me wondering who was in the kitchen. I did not go back to that restaurant needless to say. There is much talk this week about drugs and how occasional cocaine and cannabis users are part of the major
Healy-Rae’s book TD Michael Healy-Rae has invited me - along with about 5,000 others I have no doubt – to his latest new book launch which will be out in time for the Christmas market. It is very nice of him to invite me. The book will be launched by the sometimes foul mouthed comedian, but very popular TV star, Tommy Tiernan. It emerged this week that Michael Healy-Rae missed eight out of 10 votes in the Dáil. Now I have a problem with Michael Healy-Rae having the time to write books when he misses 80 percent of votes in the Dáil. Politics and democracy is important to me. Voting in the Dáil is one of the most important things a person can do for his constituents. TDs are elected from constituencies to vote in the Dáil and should, ideally, be obliged to vote in the parliament if this country respected democracy. Michael Healy-Rae is a very busy TD. How has he time to write a book? Apart from the attitude to national politics that is displayed by Mr Michael Healy-Rae’s Dáil voting record, for those of us who hold books sacred, and some of us still do, there is a crowning cynicism to publishing a book for the Christmas market. problem and are feeding the international trade in drugs and enriching criminals. Perhaps if the same standards were to applied to where we eat and where we sleep and get our nails done, we might put a dent in trafficking and exploitation of humans from other lands. Are the employees being treated properly, where are they living and are they trafficked? There are other issues here too. If we have people working for next to nothing there is an undermining of the labour laws and the price of labour is driven down for everyone so snakehead gangs in China and loyalist-republican gangs in the North can make millions.

Over 250 people attended the third annual 4.5km ‘Spooky Sprint’ route, with funds raised to support The Fuchsia Ward, St Columbanus Community Hospital and Kilcummin Parents Association. Afterwards, everyone met at Kilcummin Recreational Hall where they participated in a range of traditional Halloween games, a raffle and an awards ceremony for the best costumes. New for this year was a pumpkin carving
and decoration competition. “A lot of work and effort went into organising the day by a dedicated team of people and we want to extend a big thank you to everyone involved and to everyone who supported the day,” one of the organisers, Anne Marie O’Leary from Kilcummin National School Parents Association, said. “We were once again delighted with such a great turnout this year and everyone enjoyed their day. We are looking forward to next year’s event for more fun and games.”

As well as the eagerly contested fancy dress competition, the event also features family activities like puppet shows and spook storytelling, and provides Killarney with a welcome off-season tourist boost and attracts a great mix of locals and visitors. “October is a busy time at the Outlet Centre and this annual event is advertised far and wide,” Paul Sherry, Outlet Centre Manager, told the Killarney Ad-
vertiser. “It does bring people to town, and they don’t spend all day with us, they go into town for a while too.” Participants in the fancy dress competition go to huge efforts, encouraged by the great prizes on offer. The O’Meara Family from Killarney won a family break in the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery as the Best Dressed Family. Lorraine Gordon was the winner of the Best Dressed Adult and won a family pass for Killarney Ghost Tours. Darren O'Brien, the Best Dressed Boy, and Erin O'Sullivan, Kilcummin, the Best Dressed Girl, each won a Flicker A3 Air Scooter sponsored by O'Connor’s World of Wonder.

BUSINESS OF WEEK THE
NEW BARBER SHOP: Mohammad (Mo) Saleh recently opened VIP Turkish Barber in Old Market Lane. Photos: Michelle Crean
Mo opens new barber shop in Killarney town If you’re looking for a cut above the rest - then why not stop by Killarney’s newest barber shop in Old Market Lane.
Experienced barber Mohammed (Mo) Saleh, who has more than eight years-experience working in barber shops in Killarney town, has now branched out and opened his own business. VIP Turkish Barber, which opened its
doors on October 1, offers competitively priced professional and Turkish style barber cuts, specialist beard trims, hot towel shaves, steam shave, hair washing, and personal grooming including nose and ear waxing - and there’s a range of hair products on sale too.
Mo caters for all ages and is great with the little ones too. With three seats in the barber shop and a large seating area, there’s plenty of room inside for customers. “I’m very excited to have finally opened my new business,” Mo told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s in an ideal location in the town centre. Men and kids are welcome. We
have tea and coffee making facilities and a toilet. We also have a child friendly motorbike seat for young children. It creates a calm environment for the young child as it can be daunting for them, especially if it’s their first haircut. They see the bike and it distracts them, making them more relaxed.” Appointments can be made in advance and walk ins are also welcome, he added. “We also have a range of products available including different strengths of Reuzel hair wax and Totex wax and gels.” Loyalty cards and gift vouchers are also available. This week we’re looking at ways of improving back pain naturally. If you suffer from acute or chronic pain in the back then these top tips may help.
A variety of ways to treat back pain
Killarney students receive credit union bursary Two Killarney students were amongst the winners of the Killarney Credit Union Third Level Educational Bursary Award. Lucia Hurmson from Kilcummin who is studying Social Care in IT Tralee, and Oran O’Donoghue from Loreto Road who is studying Biotechnology in NUIG, received an award for €1,000 each. The bursary award was open for those who are attending third level for the first time and are also members of Killarney Credit Union. Mature students and those attending college abroad were eligible to apply. “This year, we had over 65 applicants for our Third Level Bursary Award,” Karena McCarthy, Youth and Marketing Officer
at Killarney Credit Union, said. “In light of the increasing costs of attending third level, we are delighted to support these First Year students as they begin their academic journey and also wish all those that applied continued success in their studies.” A further €1,000 was presented to Ellen O’Sullivan from Cahersiveen who is studying Food Science and Nutrition in University of Limerick and Rebecca O’Sullivan from Kenmare who is studying Nutrition and Health in CIT.
Do you suffer with acute or chronic back pain? Acute pain begins suddenly and may be short lived, whereas chronic pain persists over a period of time. Either way, pain has the ability to turn any life into a living nightmare. What causes back pain? The short answer, life! The back is a very large area of the body, and back pain can encompass a wide range of symptoms and underlying causes. You have a huge amount of nerves radiating from the spine, so the causes of back pain are numerous. Some people put off going to the doctor because they think pain is a part of ageing and nothing can help – this is not true. It is always best to see your GP if you have ongoing pain. The good news is that there is a variety of ways to treat pain. Some treatments may involve medication, but some do not. SOME COMMON CAUSES OF BACK PAIN MAY INCLUDE: STRESS: There are many types of stress and they may affect the structures of the body. The body is very adaptable, but like everything, it has its limits, and
when it reaches this limit, pain may be the unfortunate result. It could lead to lower or upper back pain. Most people are familiar with being “stressed-out”, which refers to mental or emotional stress; this kind of stress usually involves, worry, fear, anger, resentment, grief and other thoughts and emotions. The body reacts to this stress by tensing the muscles, which creates strain on the muscles and the skeleton, and may involve nerve irritation. PHYSICAL STRESS: includes pain from trauma such as an accident, fall, sports injury or a sudden jolt, or may be as a result of poor posture or sleeping in an awkward position. SOME OF THE NATURAL REMEDIES WHICH MAY HELP INCLUDE: OMEGA 3 ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS: May help to lessen the intensity of joint pain and stiffness and help lower inflammation within the body. ZINCUFLEX: Perfect for anyone looking for a natural way to help reduce inflammation and pain. Combination of Vitamin C, Ginger and Curcumin; which contributes towards the normal function of bones and cartilage. It may also help to control inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. QUERCETIN: Has potent anti-inflammatory activity. DEVIL’S CLAW: Shows good results in cases of lower back pain and has anti-inflammatory properties. TURMERIC: May be useful in reducing inflammation and symptoms such as pain and stiffness. MAGNESIUM: A very effective muscle relaxant and also plays a role in the maintenance of normal bones and muscle function as well as helping to support energy release. REVIVE ACTIVE JOINT COMPLEX: An all-in-one solution to support cartilage, bone and connective tissue with powerful MSM to cool inflamed joint tissue.
ON A HIGH: On the roof top of Killarney Credit Union with a Bursary Award of €1000 each are students: Ellen O’Sullivan, Oran O’Donoghue and Lucia Hermson. Picture: Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan

FAIR DEAL SCHEME FOR FARMERS The Nursing Home Support Scheme is a Financial Support Scheme for people who need long term nursing home care. Under the Nursing Home Support Scheme, you make a contribution towards the cost of your care and the state will pay the balance. This applies whether the nursing home is public, private or voluntary. The Fairdeal Scheme is not compulsory, there is no obligation on an individual to apply for the Fairdeal Scheme. Once an application is made, the HSE undertakes both a Financial and Care-needs Assessment. The Financial Assessment examines income and assets in order to work out what their contribution to care will be. Under the Fair Deal Scheme, 80% of annual income is utilised together with 7.5% of the value of assets per annum for instance; Savings, Investments, Principal Private Resident, Farm and other assets. Assets that have been transferred for less than 5 years prior to the application of the Scheme are include in the Financial Assessment The first €36,000.00 of any assets owned by an individual is disregarded or €72,000.00 for a couple. In the case of a persons home, the maximum annual contribution
that can be applied to this asset is based on 7.5% of the value of the residents for the first three years i.e. a maximum of 22.5% of the value of the home regardless of the length of stay or care. Under recent amendments the three year limit or cap of 22.5% is now to be applied. This will apply in the following circumstances i.e. where a person has suffered a sudden illness or disability which causes them to require long term residential care, where the person or their partners is actively engaged in the daily management of the farm up until the time of the sudden illness or disability and where a family successor certifies that he or she will continue the management of the farm or relevant business. The three year capping for agricultural assets is part of legislation that is currently being in-acted and is currently act Committee stage. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. WEDDING
Dream wedding was like a scene from a movie! There was nothing traditional about the way they met – in fact it was like a scene out of a movie for Damian O'Callaghan and Kate Wojciechowska – who tied the knot in Killarney on Saturday.

WEDDING OF THE WEEK
24
Filmmaker Damian, who is best known for his work ‘Tradition’, married Kate in St Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday. Fr Jim Lenihan was the main celebrant, with Mass concelebrated by Fr Jamie Twohig and Deacon Mark Moriarty. Kate’s brother Christopher walked her down the aisle. Bridal party was made up of Jackie O’Callaghan, Damian’s sister as Maid of Honour, and Kate’s friends Gozia Pabisz and Laura Jurand as Bridesmaids. Best Man was Henry Bartlett, and Groomsmen were Tim O’Connor and Owen Roberts, both of whom appeared as gardai in Damian’s film ‘Tradition’. The happy couple have been together for 13 years after Damian was smitten when he clapped eyes on the pretty Polish model at Mass. And, although he didn’t approach Kate that day, he wood her with a large basket of Yankee Candles - leaving them outside her front door after finding out where she lived from a friend of a friend. Kate, from Torun, who has been living in Killarney for 13 years, found his ges-
ture cute and after meeting up with him thought his jokes were very funny – the rest they say is history! “We met in St Mary’s Cathedral,” Damian told the Killarney Advertiser. “She caught my eye while she was going up for communion. I was praying for a miracle and if you pray hard enough you get what you ask for. After meeting up I told her “I’m the guy” and she thought I was crazy!” After photos at the thatch house opposite St Mary’s and at Ross Castle, the couple enjoyed a reception with close friends and family including Damian’s mom Anne and Kate’s mom Jadwiga, in The Plaza Hotel afterwards. Cork band ‘Night Shift’, friends of Damian, had the crowd dancing to ‘80s, 90s and modern music and the fun continued with a DJ afterwards. “We even got an extra hour in as the clocks went back,” Damian added. The newlyweds are this week enjoying a break in Poland before heading to Montenegro for their honeymoon.

DOUBLE CELEBRATIONS: Rebecca O'Reilly from Killarney and Kerri Sheahan from Firies celebrated their double 21st birthday surrounded by friends and family in the Social 15, Killarney on Saturday night. Photo: Marek Hajdasz
Joint 21st celebrations for Kerri and Rebecca
They first met when they started secondary school together at St Brigid’s in Killarney. They then spent all of this summer in San Diego on a J1 visa programme, so it was only fitting that Rebecca O'Reilly from Killarney and Kerri Sheahan from Firies should celebrate their 21st birthdays together too - and that is what they did at Social 15 on Saturday night. The party started a few days earlier for Kerri. Her uncle and godfather Denis Sheehan came home from New York for the first time in 18 years to help his goddaughter celebrate. It was six years since
Kerri last met him while she was on a family holiday to his home in Yonkers. “We started the party in the house in Firies,” Kerri’s mother Carmel explained. “It was great night.” Rebecca’s mother Sandra is from County Mayo and several of her family and friends made the journey from the north west for the occasion. “It was a great night,” added Carmel. “There was about 50 or 60 family and friends in Social 15 and it was great craic.”
SURPRISE! Betty Carroll from Ballaugh, Killarney celebrated her surprise 50th birthday surrounded by friends and family in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Saturday night. Photo: Marek Hajdasz
Shock surprise for Betty’s 50th When Betty Carroll was told by her husband Anthony that she was going to town on Saturday night to celebrate her 50th birthday the last thing she expected was her extended family and friends to be hiding behind curtains in a well-known Killarney hotel.
RETIREMENT: Honouring her excellent service and advise to thousands of tourists visiting Kerry, Rene Dooley, Senior Travel Advisor (centre), retired from Fáilte Ireland Tourist Information Centre, Killarney after 25 years of service to the industry. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan
But that is exactly what happened! Betty, Anthony and their two children Tristan and Ellen were in Killarney on Saturday night for a few quiet drinks to celebrate her big day. At some point during the evening Anthony announced that they needed to meet
another couple at the Killarney Avenue Hotel and she did not suspect a thing. “When we arrived there they we were all hiding behind the curtains and started singing ‘Happy Birthday’,” Betty, who is originally from Lissivigeen but now lives in Ballaugh, told the Killarney Advertiser. “I was shaking, but it was lovely.” The party included her own family and Anthony’s extended family and a few close friends. “It was a very intimate gathering,” she added. “They knew I would go mad if it was a big night.”

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney

Cyclamen flowers represent tender love and affection Cyclamen are arguably the showstoppers of the winter. They are bright, flower profusely and are reasonably priced. There are many varieties, but the most common are the miniature ones which are widely available in every shop and garden centre from September onwards. These are suitable for planting outdoors in tubs and window boxes, but also do well indoors provided they are not placed above a radiator. The word Cyclamen comes from the ancient Greek word for circle, and its current name is actually Medieval Latin. They are known as ‘sowbread’ or ‘swinebread’ as apparently pigs love them. I always thought this was an old wives tale until I met someone from Holland recently who said they were called Varkensbrood (pig’s bread) in Holland also. In fact, throughout the world, as far away as Japan, the common name for cyclamen is some derivative of pigs and food! There are two varieties which I think are a must have for anyone who has even a small patch of shady garden: C. coum, and C. hederifolium. The first, C. coum, develops its leaves over the winter, and is one of the earliest flowering plants in the spring. There is nothing more uplifting than seeing smatterings of bright pink in an otherwise dull garden! They will really grow anywhere, but under trees is best as all cyclamen are woodland plants. C. hederifolium is my favourite as it flowers in late autumn before its leaves develop. They are a surprise every year, and a happy reminder that there is life in the garden. They happily naturalise, especially under a tree
where the fallen leaves provide hummus rich soil. The mini cyclamen is the one with which we are most familiar as they are the ones for sale everywhere for window boxes and so on. They can be used indoors provided they are not in a hot room or in direct sunlight. Water them from the bottom ensuring they do not stand in water for any length of time. Outside, make sure the pot drains, well as waterlogging is the cyclamens number one enemy! It is advisable not to plant them too deep, scrape away some of the top layer of compost when you plant them, and leave the corm slightly above the level of your compost - this will prevent the leaves and flowers rotting at the base. Deadheading is important as they set seed quickly. You can recognise the seed head as it curls down, around and inward, bringing the seed pod close to the ground, and it is round rather than the oblong and upright habit of the flower bud. If possible, keep direct rain off the pots as they do not like being saturated. However, they are not affected too badly when planted in the open ground. Cyclamen flowers can be used as cut flowers, just sear the bottom of the stem in boiling water for 10 seconds, and they will last a week at least! They are lovely for miniature or cluster arrangements. Cyclamen have traditionally been the flower which represents tender love and sincere warmth of affection, possibly because of their heart shaped leaves. However, they are also very good for people who cannot tolerate dry air as they expel water through their leaves when humidity is low, making it easier for some people to breathe - this is also the reason that they dry out quickly!

Local hotel celebrates four-star classification
One local hotel is the latest to receive four stars – following a reclassification by Fáilte Ireland.
The Castlerosse Park Resort received the accolade following a number of improvements in product and service – including rebranding to Castlerosse Park Resort to reflect the hotel’s National Park and lakeside location within two kilometres of the town centre. To complement its environmentally sensitive location, Castlerosse Park Resort has also continued efforts to become eco-friendlier by undertaking more sustainable approaches such as reducing both energy and non-recyclable waste in order to achieve a greener, cleaner resort. Castlerosse also intends to develop these practices further in the coming year, as part of improving the overall customer experience. “We are all absolutely delighted to see Castlerosse get the recognition it deserves; we have all worked hard over the last few years improving our services and rebranding as a resort in order to achieve this classification, and we are
grateful to Fáilte Ireland for awarding us with four stars,” Castlerosse Park Resort General Manager, Danny Bowe, said. “Here at the Castlerosse we are constantly striving to offer a high level of service to old and new customers, so it is a pleasure to see that all of our hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed.” Despite the Resort’s reclassification to four-stars, prices will remain the same. In addition to its idyllic location, the resort also boasts a nine-hole golf course with stunning views of the lakes and mountains, a fully equipped leisure club with a 20-metre swimming pool, sauna and steam room, and Renew Beauty Spa, which offers holistic beauty treatments. The resort is also a perfect setting for wedding celebrations, with high quality food and personal service to ensure a truly memorable day for the happy couple and their guests.

The Starless Sea By Erin Morgenstern
RELEASED: NOVEMBER 5 Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by its tales he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues - a bee, a key, and a sword - that leads him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library, hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians - it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who
have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction.

Body of missing British backpacker discovered in Cambodian sea The body of missing British backpacker, Amelia Bambridge, was found off the coast of Cambodia, yesterday (Thursday). Bambridge, from Worthing, West Sussex, was last seen on the island of Koh Rong on Wednesday, October 23. Staff at Police Beach, a private venue which hosts regular parties, found the 21-year-old’s purple rucksack, containing her purse, phone and bank cards, the following morning. Major General Chuon Narin, police chief for the province, said on Tuesday that the search had been expanded to nearby islands and further offshore in the Gulf of Thailand. Narin later said that given the area she was last seen, it was feared she had drowned and that local fishermen and neighbouring provinces in southwestern Cambodia had been alerted. About 150 volunteers and Cambodian police were involved in searches of the

Ancient sheep tradition jams Madrid Sheep replaced traffic on the streets of Madrid on Sunday as shepherds steered their flocks through the heart of the Spanish capital, following ancient migration routes. The annual event, which started in 1994, allows shepherds to exercise their right to use traditional routes to migrate their livestock from northern Spain to more southerly areas. The route would have taken them through undeveloped countryside a few centuries ago, but today it cuts through Madrid’s bustling city centre and along some of its most famous streets. Sheep farmers pay a nominal charge in symbolic acknowledgement of a 1418 agreement with the city council that set a fee of 50 maravedis - medieval coins - per 1,000 sheep brought through the central Sol square and Gran Via street. The herd includes 2,000 merino sheep and 100 goats.

ish woman,” said Narin. It is understood that the dead woman had strong Kerry connections and had visited the county within the last year on a family trip.
Photoshop the latest tool of self-promotion It seems Photoshop is an acceptable tool when it comes to the self-promotion of the US president. Last week, the US Government announced that the US Military had killed the Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The army found the world’s most-wanted man with the aid of a specially trained military sniffer dog. This prompted President Trump to engage in another ill-advised publicity
stunt. Earlier this week he tweeted a photo of himself presenting a medal of honour to the dog at the White House. The medal of honour is the most prestigious military decoration awarded to US service members for extraordinary acts of bravery. There are a couple of problems with this. The dog is still in Syria, having being slightly injured while walking on live electrical cables in search of al-Baghdadi.
It is a Photoshopped version of an actual photograph of Trump awarding the medal of honour in 2017 to James McCloughan, a retired army medic who was honoured for saving the lives of 10 people during the Vietnam war. In the image tweeted by the US president, McCloughan’s head has been replaced with the head of the dog, named in media reports as ‘Conan’, with his tongue hanging out of his mouth. General Frank McKenzie, who leads US Central Command, said the dog has worked with special operation forces for four years and taken part in about 50 missions. He said working dogs like this one are “critical members of our forces”.

Men wanted for Movember challenge! The call is being issued to men right across the county to get those moustaches and beards growing to highlight men’s health issues - in particular prostate and testicular cancer.

Killarney Guides blaze a trail to Croke Park! Four Killarney teenagers received the Trail Blazer National Guide Award – Irish Girl Guides’ highest award – at a special ceremony in Croke Park. The girls, who are all aged 14 or 15, were among 135 Irish Girl Guides (IGG) members who travelled from all corners of the country to receive the award and with their Guide leaders and families, celebrate reaching the pinnacle of Guiding. Méabh O’Sullivan Darcy, Sarah McCarthy and Ellen McSweeney of Mangerton Guides, Killarney, and Gracey Myers of Fossa Guides, Killarney, each received a Trail Blazer gold pin from Irish Girl Guides (IGG) President Maureen Murphy and a National Guide Award certificate from IGG Chief Commissioner Helen Concannon. Congratulating the recipients, IGG President Maureen Murphy said it was a privilege to be to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of the Trail Blazers who have all shown commitment in com-
pleting the challenges and, in doing so, putting their individual footprint on their tasks. “You are inspirational, you will inspire younger members and take your learning and experiences gained into your communities and wider society.” Carol Stanley, Assistant Chair of IGG Guide Branch, said that, without the hard work and commitment of the 135 girls, there would be no celebrations. “This award is made in recognition of the successful completion of a series of challenges, including teamwork activities, outdoor survival skills, community service, global awareness and working with younger members of Irish Girl Guides to help them develop confidence, independence and essential life-skills. We are delighted for you all and we all know that you have worked to your fullest potential to receive this award and hope you continue to use many of the life-skills you have achieved wherever life takes you in the future.”

Recovery Haven Kerry last year raised €35,000 for their services as 160 men across Kerry took part in the Movember challenge – and are now hoping even more men will come on board for this year’s fundraiser. The Tralee based charity - which has outreach services in Killarney and Killorglin - is currently looking to recruit men asking them to grow a beard or moustache between now and the end of November ahead of their big shave off at The Rose Hotel Tralee on November 27. Larger groups are also welcome to host their own events at a date of their choice in November. Individuals, businesses, clubs, pubs and other groups across Kerry are welcome to come together and support the cause, Recovery Haven PR & Marketing officer, Marisa Reidy, explained.
The charity would also love to hear from individuals who may have an existing signature moustache or beard that they would be willing to sacrifice for such a good cause! “We were genuinely bowled over last year by the support we received from the men of Kerry and we are really hoping to go one better this year,” Marisa said. “Recovery Haven needs an average of €180,000 annually to keep our doors open and with no State funding available, we rely fully on fundraising events such as this to reach such a challenging goal. We believe that the potential of our 2019 Movember Challenge is huge, but as with any fundraising events, we rely fully on the support of the local community to make it happen, so for that reason we would love the men of Kerry to come on board.” Anyone wishing to sign up for this year’s Movember Challenge is asked to contact Recovery Haven on 066 7192122 or email: marisa@recoveryhavenkerry. com to register and secure their sponsorship card.
Adare Bypass finally gets the green light The long-awaited Adare Bypass was given the go-ahead by the Government on Wednesday. The €450m project will include over 16km of motorway from Attyflynn, north of Adare to Rathkeale, bypassing Adare, and over 15km of dual carriageway from Rathkeale to Foynes Port. It is the second major roads project to benefit Kerry in as many weeks following on the early October announcement that the Macroom Bypass has also been given the green light. Limerick City and County Council will now submit its planning application for the project to An Bord Pleanála, a statutory process which is likely to take up to
12 months and involve submissions and an oral hearing. The Adare Bypass, once completed, will remove up an estimated 17,000 vehicles currently passing through Adare on a daily basis. “Getting this project to this step is a very important milestone for me and getting the Government to this stage is vital,” Minister of State, Patrick O’Donovan, said. “I look forward now to the Limerick to Foynes project progressing to enter the independent planning process, which I hope will give clarity, and when completed, we will finally see a start on this road.”

Time to get back in shape The stomach is always the last place to get into shape and if you’re struggling then Eurowave is a great way to help. It’s a faradic current based inch loss machine which works on exercising the belly muscles. Every session is equivalent to 200 sit ups with no strain or stress on the body. When the course is started we recommend you do three sessions a week for the first three weeks followed by two sessions a week for the last two weeks so it’s a five week course to get the best results. Everybody is different, so all results vary depending on your diet and other exercise you are doing. The Eurowave also works on the bum and thighs to give smoother skin, firmness and a bum lift. Gravity is not our friend as we age. The faradic current is working on the belly of the muscle, contacting and relaxing it and it also gives

an extra advantage by improving blood flow and stimulating circulation which brings with it great looking skin. It removes the pockets of stubborn cellulite – and with the improved circulation we get an over-all feel good effect. It’s a great time to start now in the run up to Christmas as you will be better motivated to look your best for family and friends over the holiday season. It’s really important to look after your body for the your future health, especially the midriff area, and a little help getting started in the right direction is always a help. 44 DROMHALL HOTEL
Christmas all wrapped up at Dromhall Hotel Overlooking the famous Killarney mountains on the Muckross Road, Dromhall Hotel is the ideal location for a Christmas party or get-together.
How to plan a work Christmas party Whether you volunteered or were chosen as this year’s Christmas office party planner – there’s pressure to get it right for everyone. Here are some solid top tips when planning that perfect party. 1. M eet with your boss before doing anything Ask for a brief meeting to go over your boss's expectations. Maybe he or she has
a different idea of what kind of party is planned – so touch base with the boss to be sure you’re going in the right direction. 2. Set a budget Before deciding on champagne and caviar, a sit down meal or a buffet, set a

As prime dates are already filling up, make sure to call to book your Christmas party today. Dromhall Hotel is a truly beautiful venue filled with tradition and splendour which is majestically showcased during the Christmas season.
budget with your boss and do not exceed it.
6. Ask for help Depending on the size of your company or office, attempting to do all of the above alone might just be asking to fail, so ask your trusted colleagues for assistance and delegate tasks.
3. Plan ahead Start with finding out how many will be going, then research the best venues as soon as you are given the job of planning. Book a venue well in advance which will save you time, stress and perhaps money as well. 4. Pay attention to details Take the time to visualise every detail of your event from the décor to the food and entertainment. Imagine things that can go wrong and work them out in advance. 5. Don't forget the fun The best office parties are the ones where everyone laughed a lot. Keep your colleagues' tastes and personalities in mind when choosing entertainment, and you can't go wrong.
For more information on the variety of Christmas party packages at Dromhall Hotel or lunch and dinner options at Kayne’s Brasserie, contact their Christmas events Coordinator Ciara O’Callaghan on 064 6639300 or ciaraoc@randleshotel.com.
7. Get the word out Start advertising the office Christmas party early in locations where they can see it clearly. Ask employees to confirm their presence at least three weeks in advance in order to plan for food, drinks and transportation. 8. Stay in control Be proud of your hard work and enjoy yourself at the party, but don't get drunk. Remember that you are the manager of the evening and the point of contact with the venue in case anything goes wrong. You want people to be talking about your epic Christmas party months later!

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
What is true health & fitness? Health is not a priority - it is a value. It is not something however that can be sold and peddled as external to who you are. It is important to understand your outer is an expression of your inner - not the other way around. Love yourself first and foremost. Whatever version of yourself that is, it doesn’t matter, you need to love yourself. Throw away all the oppressive imagery and rubbish from so-called “health and fitness” magazines and supposed topless gurus. If you start to understand the power and beauty of your own body then you’ll start to nourish it - not diet. You won’t exercise to punish yourself for the pizza and beers you had on Friday night, you’ll do it because it positively impacts everything else in your life. That one hour of exercise in the gym, in the park or at home in the garage, should make the other 23 hours in your day better. So many of us view the gym as some form of self-flagellation for the awful sins we’ve committed - a place where we must go to knock the insecurities out of ourselves. Please stop thinking this way. One bad meal doesn’t make you unhealthy, the same way one healthy meal won’t make you healthy. Stop looking for a silver bullet, it doesn’t exist. Nowadays it seems we are all looking for that instant gratification without realising that it is the journey, not the product
which makes you. Yes, that is a corny, well-worn line, but it is absolutely the truth. No shake, pill or ridiculous machine off of TV shopping is going to make you fit and healthy. Lately, I’ve noticed even more “before and after” transformation pics online. Again, these can be a hugely motivating and positive thing, but often you will see something written beneath claiming; “Making improvements, but still want more definition” etc. Rarely do you see someone write; “I think I look better on the outside, but on the inside I feel a million times better”. The number on the scales or the ‘points’ you’ve consumed today is not going to make you happy tomorrow. Playing a game of football with your kids or taking a bike ride around a beautiful park will. These are the things that really matter, everything else is really just the by-product. We need to listen to our bodies and stop watching everyone else’s. At Activate, we look at health and fitness differently. We love what we do - seeing people achieve and recognise their own beauty - their own best version of themselves. So be you, love you and learn to live in your own skin.

Topical issues discussed at local breakfast event
Fishermen, processors and shellfish producers from across Kerry gathered at the Brehon Hotel last week for the latest Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) breakfast seminar. The event was the sixth in a series of free seminars that took place around the coast over the last few months that focussed on the topical issues for the sector including Brexit, vessel compliance and risk assessment. Attendees at the breakfast seminar in Killarney heard about the latest developments and regulations in the fishing sector and had their questions answered personally by relevant experts from the SFPA and other organisations. “The sector faces a number of other significant challenges and these seminars
will equip the industry with the information they need,” Dr Susan Steele, SFPA Chair, said. “The response from industry has been very positive, with a strong attendance at the first five events in Waterford, Dublin, Cork, Donegal and Galway.” The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine; Revenue; Health and Safety Authority; BIM; Marine Institute and Inland Fisheries Ireland were among the wide range of organisations represented at the Killarney event.

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING “My late father, Jackie Healy-Rae, always advertised his weekly Saturday clinic in Scotts Hotel at 3pm in the Killarney Advertiser. I continued this tradition since 2011 as I also appreciate the power of local advertising. To be a national politician, you have to be elected locally. The local message is more important than any other media outlet for me. I really believe the people appreciate, so much, the local news, pictures, death notices and information in our local advertiser and nothing could replace it. Small businesses can afford local advertising as it comes within their budget. When the advertiser comes out, there are literally people waiting at shops and outlets to pick it up. This proves how important it is in our community. The Killarney Advertiser has been in existence since 1973, 46 years. I am quite confident that despite the changes in modern technology, the Killarney Advertiser will proudly celebrate its 100th anniversary in 54 years and I would like to be around for the celebrations”
Michael Healy-Rae
Independent TD for Kerry
“We are proud and privileged to say that we have worked with the Killarney Advertiser since its inception. They offer a powerful blend of creative and collaborative adverts that exceed expectations. More importantly, it is always a pleasure to work with the team. Killarney Advertiser is a company on point with a highly-developed sense of community and social responsibility. Thank you from all at O’Leary’s Expert Electrical”

All new Nissan makes Kerry debut The all-new Nissan Juke, which was launched in Barcelona two weeks ago, made a two-day visit to Kerry this week ahead of its official release at the end of November. On Tuesday, Randles Bros on the Muckross Road had the first one in Ireland on show. The following day it was on display in their Manor West showrooms in Tralee. The pioneering Juke was originally launched a decade ago and went on to sell 1.5 million around the world, carving a new niche for compact crossover SUVs which has been widely copied since. Offering the same sense of style and fun together with a suite of advanced technologies, the all-new JUKE is the most connected Nissan car. The powertrain is also highly advanced, with a downsized turbo petrol engine which is compact, lightweight, responsive and economical. For the first time
the Juke can also be ordered with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters or a full auto mode. Together with an all new chassis, it ensures the new Juke is fun to drive, refined and efficient with exceptional safety. "The Nissan Juke has never followed the crowd. Instead it leads the way, with its big personality and agile driving," said Marco Fioravanti, Vice President, Product Planning, Nissan Europe at the Barcelona launch. "The new model builds on the strong athletic design people love about Juke and adds on a unique on-the-road experience thanks to ProPILOT and a large choice of intelligent technologies." The Nissan Juke is built at Nissan's award-winning manufacturing plant in Sunderland, UK with sales starting from the end of November in European markets.

Motor club to launch Historic Rally on Sunday Killarney and District Motor Club will launch its Rentokil-Initial Historic Rally on Sunday next at the Gleneagle Hotel. This year’s rally will feature a host of new innovations, some that have never been seen before in Irish rally. All details will be revealed at the press conference on Sunday which is open to the public. Already, new clerk of the course, Darren McCormick has put his own stamp on the rally. A history-maker in his own right Darren is the first second-generation clerk appointed by the club and follows in his father Gary’s footsteps who previously ran the ally in the late 1990s and early 2000s. “It is a great honour to be selected by the club to run one of its premier events and even greater to put into practice the thing Gary thought me over the years,” said Darren. An extensive route survey has been carried out by the organising committee and while competitors will be familiar with all
of the route, new sections on every stage will make the November 30 rally one of the most competitive yet. One of the biggest changes is a new version of Moll’s Gap, the stage will now run to nearly 20km but the finer points of this section will not be revealed until nearer the event. Entries are set to exceed the permitted 160 cars, with interest coming from all over Ireland and the UK. Sunday’s event gets underway at 3pm, and rally fans from far and wide are invited to attend. The club will confirm at the launch the names of some of the drivers and types of cars that will be in action in Killarney at the end of November, as well as revealing some of the new concepts set to be introduced this year.

CAO 2020 open for applications next week The CAO journey is about to begin for the Class of 2020. From Tuesday, November 5 at 12pm, the CAO online application system will open for the 2020 season. Students including school leavers, mature students, FETAC/QQI and other non-standard applications can register their CAO application by logging on to www.cao.ie and clicking on Apply. By registering your personal details and paying the application fee of €30 before 5.15pm on January 20, and €45 thereafter up to February 1 at 5.15pm, you receive your CAO number. Once you have completed this first step you can edit your application by using the ‘My Application’ facility. Some further supplementary information may be required by the various deadlines so it is important to download the CAO handbook and read it carefully. Courses can be introduced up to Feb-
ruary 1, at 5.15pm and can be amended later when the ‘Change of Mind’ facility opens from May 5 to July 1, at 5.15pm. However, students must be careful about courses that are marked as ‘Restricted’ in the CAO handbook as they can’t be added in after the February 1 deadline. It is essential to enter your personal details carefully and correctly to avoid any confusion at offers stage. Students have the option to fill up to 10 choices for level 8 courses and 10 choices for level 6/7. Before applying for a course, check that you meet the minimum entry requirements - this information is available on the website of the institution. Having the points for a course is not enough;

GRADUATION: Graduate Sarah O'Keeffe from Rathmore, pictured with grandparents Sheila and Dermot at the recent Mary Immaculate College conferring ceremonies. Pic: Don Moloney
you must meet the course/institution’s requirements to be considered. The most important rule of all is that you must place your course choices in genuine order of preference. This is an exciting time for students but it can become daunting and confusing as you sift through all the information available to you as you try to make this important decision about what route to take. The key thing is to start the process early, use all the resources around you to help and ensure that you research thoroughly all courses that you include in your CAO application. That way you will make an informed choice. Online resources like www.careersportal.ie and www.qualifax.ie are very helpful and the college websites have lots of details about courses. The CAO website has lots of very useful resources for students and parents to try to assist you in this process. And don’t forget to talk to

Rare whiskey raises €1,500 for Kerry Parents & Friends A rare whiskey which is limited to 18 bottles helped raised €1,500 for a local charity.
| By Michelle Crean Killarney’s Celtic Whiskey this week presented a cheque to Kerry Parents & Friends after auctioning ‘The Dingle Celt’ Irish whiskey bottles. Following the success of their award-winning Celtic Cask Independent bottlings, the decision to release an ultra exclusive Dingle whiskey was made earlier this year. The Dingle Celt is an extremely rare bottling from a single cask at Dingle Distillery, which has been triple distilled and fully aged in a 50 litre Caratelli Chestnut Cask that previously matured Vin Santo dessert wine from Altesino - one of the finest wineries in Tuscany. The single malt was distilled at the Dingle distillery on May 23, 2015 and bottled by Celtic Whiskey at cask strength on December 6, 2018, this whiskey is limited to 18 bottles. Customers had the opportunity to purchase one of 15 bottles online at www. celticwhiskeyauction.com from Monday, August 5 to Monday August 19 - the remaining three bottles are now available by the measure at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder in New Street, Killarney. Celtic Whiskey decided to donate at least
€100 to a local charity from each highly sought-after bottle. Kerry Parents & Friends Association (KPFA) was chosen by the Celtic Whiskey team due to it being a charity very close to a couple of staff members and a fantastic cause. “We’re absolutely thrilled to give this cheque to Marie from Kerry Parents & Friends Association (KPFA),” Bar Manager, Luke Crowley-Holland, said. “The care provided by the KPFA is hugely important to the community and is one that is close to the hearts to a number of us at Celtic Whiskey.” CEO, Marie Linehan said that Kerry Parents & Friends are delighted to receive €1500. “We have a lot of programmes running in the county and a cheque of this size will help tremendously. At present we run a transport service from Killarney town to and from work, provide staffing resources for people who require extra help for taking on extra activities in the community - cleaning the cathedral, maintaining the railway station flowers, uprooting the polytunnel at the Great Southern - a streetwise programme and a mindfulness programme.”
FUNDS: Marie Linehan, CEO of Kerry Parents & Friends, was delighted to receive a cheque for €1500 this week after Celtic Whiskey sold rare whiskey.

Anam Cara Kerry will host a parent support evening in the Recovery Haven, 5 Haigs Terrace, Killerisk, Tralee November 12, at 7.20pm. As the dark evenings draw in and the festive season starts to make its presence felt this is one time of year most bereaved parents wish they could forget about. Many will say they want to bury their head until it’s all over or go to bed and get up in January. Sadly, over 2,000 families will have lost a child this year and will face many firsts without them, including their first Christmas. During the Anam Cara Parent evening mothers and fathers can avail of the support and comfort from other bereaved parents who understand the intense grief, pain and devastation after the death of a precious child.

Your memory is our keepsake With which we will never part, God has you in his keeping, We have you in our hearts. Life goes on we know that’s true, But it’s not the same since we lost you, We keep your memories one by one, The things you said the things you did, They bring a smile and many a tear, And always a wish that you were here. In God’s care you rest above, And in our hearts you rest with love. Always loved and remembered by Tom.

In loving memory of Bernie Buckley Rockfield, Faha, Killarney Who died 3rd November 2018 As we approach the first anniversary of Bernie’s passing, Dio, Michelle, Kieran & Shane, would like to express their most sincere thanks to all that those who sympathised with us during the particularly difficult time. We will be forever grateful to the oncology team in Kerry University Hospital for all they done for Mom throughout her illness. A special thanks must be given to Ted Ahern and all at Listry GAA, along with many wonderful neighbours who helped with parking and done so much for us. The professionalism and kindness of Flynn’s undertakers must be complimented – thank you. Many thanks have to go to Father Kevin and his co-celebrants for making Bernie’s requiem mass so special. Finally, a special word of thanks to all who helped Mom throughout her illness. The love and kindness offered will always be remembered. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as a token of appreciation and gratitude. Mass will be offered for all of your intentions.
Mother Dear We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore; We did our duty to the end, ‘Till we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away; And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay.
Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again.
You left behind some aching hearts, That loved you most sincere; We never shall and never will, Forget you, Mother dear.
Forever loved and missed by Paddy and boys.
Sadly missed and always remembered by your loving family.
LOONEY
Today is full of memories, Of happiness and tears, Of birthday celebrations, We have shared throughout the years. And though we will always miss you, The endless joy you brought, Warms our hearts with gratitude, And fills our every thought.
In loving memory of Hannah Mary Looney Calfmount, Headford, Killarney Who died on 7th November 2012. Don’t remember me with sadness, Don’t remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, We’ve had throughout the years. Then when the summer sunshine, Awakes the flowers in bloom, I’ll walk that light from heaven, Around the corner of the room.
Wherever you are resting, We hope you can see, How precious and uplifting, Your memory is to us. You may not be here with us, But the day means just as much, And we can feel your presence with us, And the comfort of your touch. We will celebrate your birthday, Mum, The way we always do, For the precious love between us And all we owe to you.
In loving memory of a dear brother and uncle Anthony O’Sullivan Ballinamanagh, Kilcummin Who passed away on 5th November 2017 R.I.P. You’re the lovely Brother, I’ve adored since I was small, And for me the day you left us Was the saddest time of all. But all the memories that we shared, From when you were a boy, Have only ever filled my heart With happiness and joy. You grew up and proved to be, A man both fair and true, And every day throughout my life, I will think of you.
Think how he must be wishing, That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of him as living, in the hearts of those he touched… For nothing loved is ever lost, And he was loved so much.

Do the things we did before, The same in every way, Just whisper a little prayer to me, At the dawn of every day.

Remembered and loved always. Patrick & Christina.

I walk for you
As the memory returns of that cold dry evening in November, When you left us without saying goodbye, It’s a memory we will always remember, A memory that is so hard to take, With just one thought our hearts will break, With far more tears than years have passed, We’ve had every type of emotion amassed, We long to see that smile or golden hair, But for now we’re happy with the signs you leave us so we know you still care.
We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again.
I put your name on my back Your soul in my heart And I walk with others who know each step each thought each breath each bubble sent skyward Is for you A walk to remember is what they call it but I do not walk to remember I remember every minute of every day I walk to celebrate to thank you to acknowledge you to scream your name to those who forget I walk for you for love Sadly missed, loved always, from Michelle, Hollie and Fionn xxx

We would like to express our appreciation to all those who sympathised with us on our sad loss. Thanks to those who sent cards and messages of sympathy. Those who travelled to be with us and who called to our home, attended Bridie’s removal, funeral mass and burial. To family, neighbours and friends without whose support this past year would have been darker. A special word of thanks to the Millstreet medical centre, IMNDA, Rathmore community care team, the palliative care unit Tralee and the team under Dr. Aisling Ryan in CUH, who all did their best to care, support, aid and comfort Bridie. We would also like to thank Fr. Pat O’Donnell, Monsignor Dan Herlihy, Fr. Larry Kelly, Fr. Paddy O’Donoghue, Fr. Michéal O’Dochartaigh and Fr. Denis O’Mahony for their beautiful portrayal of her life as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. As it would be impossible to express here in words our thanks to everyone individually, we trust that this acknowledgement will be accepted as a token of our appreciation for your kindness. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. Bridie’s 1st Anniversary Mass will be on Saturday 9th November 2019 at St. Joseph’s Church, Rathmore at 6pm.
PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. C.R.

REMATCH: Dr Crokes defender David Naughton evades Chris Farley of South Kerry. Crokes and South Kerry played out a thrilling draw on Sunday.
More drama on the way as old foes go at it again This Sunday’s semi-final replay must finish on the day KERRY SFC
SEMI-FINAL (REPLAY)
_______________________________________________________________________
Dr Crokes v South Kerry Sunday at 2.30pm Fitzgerald Stadium You’d have thought that South Kerry and Dr Crokes would have seen enough of each other by this stage. These two great champions have played out Kerry football’s greatest rivalry of the 21st century and last Sunday’s semi-final was perhaps an opportunity to draw a line under it before the 20s roll around. Crokes have been the undisputed kingpins this decade
but the men from the south were the team of the 2000s and they’ve frequently challenged this decade too. In fact, they’ve actually won two of the last three County Championships that Crokes didn’t win, in 2009 and 2015, with Stacks winning the other in 2014. If they managed to get the better of the Killarney club last weekend and then went on to beat East Kerry in the final, South Kerry would have brought their tally since the turn of the millennium to six. The Crokes have eight but crucially (in terms of this rivalry, at least) the divisional side have won three of the four finals between the sides over that timespan. Stopping the old enemy’s bid for a second four-in-a-row since 2010 would
have further cemented their status as Crokes’ bogey team. Three points up with just four minutes of extra time to play on Sunday, South Kerry were so close to having the last laugh but getting rid of the Crokes is easier said than done. Edmund O’Sullivan’s charges showed tremendous character to salvage a draw when it looked for all the world like their time was up. But sure look, to paraphrase Peter Keane, they didn’t find all of those County Championships in a lucky bag. In the end, Crokes turned to their irrepressible marksman Tony Brosnan to save the day and his late goal forced a replay. Brosnan scored 1-5 in another prolific performance, the likes of which
have become so spectacular and so numerous that they are surely impossible for Kerry manager Peter Keane to ignore. So a replay will be required and here’s hoping for another Dr Crokes v South Kerry classic in The Park on Sunday. With the final scheduled for Sunday week, and no room for manoeuvre due to the forthcoming Munster Club Championship, the rematch will have to finish on the day. These teams have given us some incredible drama over the past 20 years. What better way to sign off than with a penalty shootout?
VERDICT: Crokes on pens.

KERRY SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP | MATCH REPORTS
Rathmore relegated as Kilcummin survive KERRY SFC: RELEGATION PLAYOFF _________________________________________________________________________
Kilcummin
1-15 | Naomh Éanna 0-12
LEWIS ROAD Rathmore have lost their senior club status for the first time in 20 years following last Saturday’s sixpoint defeat to Kilcummin in the Kerry SFC relegation playoff. It has been a shock demise for Rathmore, who were actually top of Group 2 and heading for the final with just 20 minutes to play in their last Club Championship group game against Legion in April. Legion turned that match around in Rathbeg and Crokes’ victory over Kerins O’Rahilly’s in the other game consigned Rathmore to the playoff. Liam Hassett’s side showed good form throughout their County League campaign and they are one of only two teams to have beaten Dr Crokes in either of this year’s championships. That counted for nought against Kilcummin, however, as a powerful third quarter performance saw the current All-Ireland Intermediate champions open up a commanding eight-point lead. Seán O’Leary bagged a brace in last year’s county intermediate final to help Kilcummin return to senior and his stunning goal against Rathmore all but guaranteed that they’d be staying there for NO WAY OUT: St Brendan's defender Trevor Wallace is surrounded by East Kerry forwards Ronan Buckley, David Clifford and Evan Cronin. Pic: Séamus Healy.
another year at least. The Kerry U20 captain burst through the centre before opening up his body and curling a sensational effort high into the top corner of Kenneth O’Keeffe’s net. Dispatched into the goal at the scoreboard end of Lewis Road, it was a finish that Colm Cooper himself would have been proud of, and it’s worth bearing in mind that O’Leary was playing with No. 2 on his back. Enda O’Sullivan, Gary O’Leary and Kevin McCarthy went through a mountain of work for Kilcummin and Kevin McSweeney did a fine job at full back. It was a frustrating afternoon for Rathmore who had to make do without county calibre players in Paul Murphy and Mark Ryan, both of whom were injured. Rathmore’s relegation to intermediate means that their players will now be eligible to line out for East Kerry in next year’s county championship. The divisional side are already contenders and the addition of Murphy, Ryan and a couple more Rathmore lads will certainly do their 2020 prospects no harm at all.
KERRY SFC | SEMI-FINAL ROUND-UP | By Eamonn Fitzgerald EAST KERRY............................................... 1-18 ST BRENDAN'S....................................... 1-14
East Kerry advanced to their first Kerry SFC final in 20 years with a four-point win over an impressive St Brendan’s side at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. David Clifford was a class apart, shooting seven points from play and a further two from frees in a Man of the Match performance. East Kerry will now go into the county final as firm favourites. Darragh Roche pounced in the 27th minute for an East Kerry goal after good work by Brian O’Donoghue. St Brendan’s improved in the second half with Kerry star Jack Barry getting into the game at midfield and in the 38th minute, Killian Fitzgerald was footblocked as he attempted to shoot for goal. Niall Sheehy slotted the penalty and it was game on. Late scores from Thomas Kearns and substitute Brendan Poff cut the East Kerry lead to a single point but the men from the east responded well with a point from a free by David Clifford after a foul on his brother Paudie, who had a quiet game. Further points by Darragh Roche and a long range free from Paudie secured the final berth for East Kerry.
DR CROKES................................................... 1-15 SOUTH KERRY.................... 0-18 (AET)
Tony Brosnan scored 1-5 with two of these points from frees, and it was his electrifying goal in the dying minutes of the second period of extra-time which salvaged a draw for Crokes and kept their hopes of a four-in-a-row alive. The loss of Johnny Buckley in the 23rd minute was compounded in the 33rd minute when Kerry panelist Da-
vid Shaw had to be withdrawn with a pulled hamstring, which rules him out of the replay on Sunday next. Crokes went in at half time leading by a point 0-7 to 0-6, as the unerring marksmanship of Bryan Sheehan kept South Kerry in contention. Crokes went four points ahead early in the second with points from Tony Brosnan, Daithí Casey and two from Micheál Burns but South Kerry fought back admirably. Kieran O’Leary and Casey added scores for Crokes late on but Sheehan matched these scores and Niall O’Shea made it a level game after Tony Brosnan had put Crokes ahead two minutes into time added on. The first period of extra time belonged to South Kerry as they struck for three points to no score for Crokes. Good work by Gavin White kept Crokes' hopes alive but when substitute Dillan O’Donoghue scored to put South Kerry four points ahead, defeat was staring Crokes in the face. Brosnan added another point and he was the hero in the 77th minute when he was at the end of that sweeping movement which resulted in an equalising goal. They should have earned a chance to point the winner when they were blatantly fouled close to the South Kerry goal, but Paul Hayes refused to give the free. It was one of several bad calls he made in a poor display. There was one final roll of the dice for South Kerry when Gavin White fouled Brendan O’Sullivan. It was within range for Bryan Sheehan but uncharacteristically he pulled his shot wide and so the two teams head for a replay.

Late fightback not enough for hosts as Ballincollig advance It was a case of too little, too late for the Scotts Lakers on Saturday night as their fourth quarter comeback came up just short against Ballincollig. PRESIDENT'S NATIONAL CUP: ROUND 1 ___________________________________________________________________________________
Scotts Lakers
68 | Ballincollig 81
KILLARNEY SPORTS CENTRE The Lakers started reasonably well against the reigning cup champions and led by three, 24-21, at the end of the first quarter. Things began to sour in the second, however, as Ballincollig’s talisman Andre Nation found his way into the game and when Iñigo Zabalo drained a flashy buzzer-beating three at the end of the half, the impressive Cork outfit led by 10. The hosts registered just 10 points in that second quarter and things improved only marginally in the third as they put a further 12 on the board. By this stage
the league leaders led by 19 and it looked like the Lakers’ cup dreams were up in smoke. It was just one of those nights for St Paul’s from beyond the arc but in fairness to Shane McCarthy’s men, they kept chipping away at the lead. Eventually their endeavour began to pay dividends as Aaron Jackson and Mick McGinn knocked down a couple of badly needed threes and, all of a sudden, after a crazy 15-0 run, it was a six-point game. Now the home crowd sensed an upset and when Jackson almost jumped out of

the gym to execute a spectacular chasedown block, the Auracle was rocking. Unfortunately, a turnover quickly killed the momentum and another pretty play by the Spaniard Zabalo swung the tie back in Ballincollig’s favour. The visitors used all of their experience to kill the clock and in the end, manic Lakers fightback aside, they were good value for their 13-point win. They will now face the Portlaoise Panthers in the quarters.
SCOTTS LAKERS: Aaron Jackson (30), Mick McGinn (13), Carlton Cuff (12), Toby Christensen (6), Brian O'Neill (4), Victor Martínez (3), Mark Greene, Séamus Brosnan. BALLINCOLLIG: (top scorers) Andre Nation (31), Iñigo Zabalo (19), Ronan O'Sullivan (8), Ciarán O'Sullivan (7), Dylan Corkery (7).

Lakers can join LYIT in second with home win The Scotts Lakers have a golden opportunity to move up to joint second in Division 1 of the National League when they welcome promotion rivals LYIT Donegal to Killarney tomorrow night. NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1
_______________________________________________________________________
Scotts Lakers v LYIT Donegal Saturday at 7.30pm Killarney Sports Centre The Lakers are currently in a tie for third with Fr Mathews but victory over LYIT will see them join their Ulster counterparts on five wins (15 points), just one win behind leaders Ballincollig. Lakers coach Shane McCarthy will be hoping for a return to winning ways after last weekend’s disappointing cup defeat to Ballincollig but his side certainly won’t have it all their own way against LYIT. The Ulstermen have won all five of their league games to date and they made light work of Tolka Rovers in the first round of the cup, racking up 97 points in an utterly dominant display. Led by 6’9” German centre Dominique Uhl, American all-rounder Emmanuel Payton, Spanish guard Mario Garcia and REJECTION: Lakers star Aaron Jackson rises high to block Ian McLoughlin of Ballincollig. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.
hometown hero Andrew McGeever, LYIT have scored at least 94 points in every one of their games so far in this campaign. Payton, a native of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, is the second most prolific scorer in the division, averaging 30.6 points per game. Uhl, meanwhile, has been a monster on the glass, picking up an incredible 19.4 rebounds per outing. To put that into context, Toby Christensen, the Lakers’ top rebounder and the fifth best rebounder in the league, is averaging 11.3. If the Lakers can maintain their 100% home league record against such strong opposition it would surely be their biggest victory of the season and it could act as a springboard for bigger and better things down the road. To get that much-needed result, they will need an improvement on the offensive end. Last weekend they shot just 25% (7/28) from outside the arc, a stat that Aaron Jackson and co. will be keen to correct tomorrow evening.

BALLYMALIS Killarney’s black and red army arrived at Ballymalis on Saturday intent on playing the rugby they knew they were capable of, and it didn’t take long for them to show it. Killorglin attacked with tight carries and hard running from the kick-off but patient and composed defence awaited them in the Killarney ranks. A slick lineout and strong rolling maul had Killarney pouring forward in waves all the way to the Killorglin 22. From there, the backs cut loose and Cormac Rowe finished a beautiful score in the corner to take an early 5-0 lead. Killarney didn’t rest there and they soon doubled their advantage. A statement of intent was made by the visitors as they continued to hold the line in defence with tireless tackling and rucking to deny Killorglin any attacking momentum. Killarney again pierced the defence with some excellent play and found themselves within reach of the Killorglin line before some neat support from the pack allowed Mikey Moriarty to cross and make it 10-0. However, a Killorglin try against the run
of play just before the break rather took the shine off the half-time scoreline. In the second half, Killorglin threw everything at their opponents on their home patch but Killarney soaked up the attack with some brilliant defence and commitment at the breakdown. Tenacious attacking in the Killorglin half drew a penalty which Killarney kicked to the corner and, having taken advantage of the field position to unleash a fast and skilful backline, Rowe crossed the line a second time to score. The conversion was added by Dara Looney and Killarney led by 12 (17-5). Killorglin refused to quit and they added a seven-pointer after forcing a turnover inside the Killarney 22. Killarney’s physical exertion was starting to take its toll in the closing moments but they remained composed as Killorglin had their last throw of the dice. Guts, desire and determination were on display as Killarney defended with a surge of defiance, forcing a turnover with a series of shuddering tackles to give them the last say and finish the game off for a well-deserved win, their first of the season.
WINNERS: The Killarney Celtic U13 girls team who defeated Dingle 8-2. Girls Roll of Honour: Sophie Ryan and Lucy Harrington (Inter Kenmare), Rebecca Naughton and Isabella Ariaza (Fenit), Edel O’Donoghue (Castleisland), Aoife Begley (Park), Emma Daly (Killarney Celtic) and Ciara Kennedy (Dingle Bay Rovers).

Reen wins Southern 4 Junior Rally title With five dominant performances this season, Killarney’s Kieran Reen (26) won the 2019 PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Junior Rally Championship on Sunday’s Bantrybased Fastnet Rally. The championship title also comes with a prize fund worth €5,000, one of the largest offered in Irish grassroots motorsport. Reen, co-driven for much of the year by Knocknagree’s Mark O’Leary (24), demonstrated incredible car control and pace over some of the fastest stages in Irish rallying, often putting other competitors in “bigger cars” to shame. The championship season kicked off in Clonakilty in March with the West Cork International Rally and continued through Killarney’s Rally of the Lakes, the Dungarvan-based Raven’s Rock, Imokilly Mini-Stages, the Cork “20” International
and finally finishing in Bantry with the Fastnet Rally. “All year Kieran has been setting stunning stage times, and in a car that is the perfect blueprint of what an affordable entry-level rally car should be,” said chairperson of the Southern 4 Rally Championship, Liam Hayes. “He goes into 2020 with a great helping hand from us in the Southern 4, but I sincerely hope that those in the Billy Coleman awards are looking at Kieran, as to me he is the epitome of the rising star who deserves their backing. “The Motorsport Academy scheme is an incredible opportunity for young drivers and navigators, and I sincerely hope that Kieran Reen gets the nomination that he deserves. His drive in Cork (Cork “20” Junior rally) where he blew the field away was of a level rarely seen in junior rallying.”

Coughlan signs for Team Scott Eurocycles Killarney junior rider Ruairí Coghlan marked his first event as a Team Scott Eurocycles member by taking second in Sunday’s nonleague cyclocross race at Limerick racecourse. Coughlan signed for the squad late last week and hopes this move will allow him race with a development team that will help him improve his racing and gain experience in races in the UK and across Europe. Coughlan was not the only Killarney rider in action on Sunday. Luke Murphy (Killarney Cycling Club) was in a league of
his own, leading the U14 race from start to finish and winning by a good two minutes. Donagh O’Connor put in a fantastic effort and got third in a very strong field. Eoghan Crowley of Killarney Cycling Club took a well-deserved third place, one better than the previous week, in the U16 category. In the elites, the big surprise of the day was Patrick Clifford (Strata3/VeloRevolution) taking third in a sprint at the line. Once again, Richard Maes showed his strength in the M40 category and he came home two minutes ahead of the next rider, Páidí O’Brien, despite riding half a lap with a puncture.

Mixed results for Killarney crews on Fastnet Rally John McCarthy was the best Kerry competitor in the rally. He guided Peter Wilson to 11th overall in another Escort. Vincent O'Shea and Eoin O'Donoghue was the best all-Kerry crew, taking 19th place overall in their BMW M1, while Denis Hickey and Seán Nolan were 23rd in another Escort. Colin O’Donoghue was forced to retire his Ford Escort from the event with steering
problems and lost out on the chance to secure the Motorsport Ireland junior title. Charlie Hickey had a new co-driver as Alistair Wyllie filled in for son Johnny who was ruled out with a back injury, and they finished 28th in their Escort. Bob Moran finished five places behind, another driver with a new co-driver in the shape of Adam Power. Raymond O'Neill and Pádraig O'Donovan were fourth in their class in a Honda Civic.
