Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking
Snowboarder Puts Killarney On The Map OUR town already has a galaxy of sports stars but this is a first – Barry Kelleher from Lissivigeen is poised to take on the world’s best in the discipline of snowboarding. Barry, the son of Liz and retired garda detective Pat Kelleher, moved to Whistler in Canada a mere three months ago. “I am going to be competing big this winter,” Barry told Killarney Advertiser. “I’m am going all out and I’m going to take on the top boys.” Barry’s goal is to set up a professional snowboarding career. And it looks like he has what it takes. The Killarney man only started snowboarding two years ago during a ski season in France. “I excelled very fast and was able to do things on the board in seven weeks that most guys can’t do in seven years,” he said.
“I knew I had an edge. I am going to enter in semi-pro events once the winter hits, and I will be competing in Slopestyle events which is a top to bottom run consisting of a series of jumps and rails where you have to perform your best tricks.” It’s exciting and refreshing to see someone from here excelling beyond the GAA pitch. “People say we are crazy and that we don’t have any fear. It’s fear that drives us, pushing the boundaries every day, living life on the edge,” said Barry. “I will have to get a sponsor if I will want to turn pro but I will see how I get on in semi pro first. When people laugh at me because I’m an Irish snowboarder I think of Conor McGregor and say, ‘I’m not here to take part, I’m here to take over!’”
Stage Is Set For Áras All Roads Lead To Phádraig’s Future Killarney For Friars
KEEN interest and a real sense of ownership prevailed when I attended a public consultation meeting at the end of January as to potential future uses for the Áras Phádraig. Impassioned pleas for a theatre or arts space floated in the air. Most of the 70 or so people present at that meeting, in he Killarney Avenue Hotel, had memories of being in the audience, cast or production team for various shows or plays staged in the Áras Phádraig over the years. Two young women, not originally from Killarney, told me they were amazed the town didn’t have a dedicated arts theatre. Yesterday it was confirmed a business plan for the Lewis Road facility has been completed following the extensive consultation and review process undertaken by the Killarney
Municipal District of Kerry County Council. The report, completed by Exodea Consulting, recommends the development of a new integrated multi-purpose facility whose core components would include a contemporary arts and theatre space with rehearsal, exhibition and gallery facilities. Meeting rooms, as well as an educational and office space also feature. A key recommendation is that any new facility should be financially self-sustaining and remain in the ownership of Kerry County Council. The cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said the acquisition of the property represents a very exciting opportunity for the area. “This plan will form the basis on which we move forward with the development of this very important strategic site in Killarney town,” he said.

EVERY good wish to Killarney’s Franciscan Friars as the Friary broadens its horizons across Europe. The Friars hosted an historic event recently, on the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, when they unveiled how the Friary has become an interprovincial novitiate. Having been a novitiate for the Irish Franciscans for many years, it now
has a European dimension with novices flocking there from across Ireland, Great Britain, Germany and Holland. “The Friary in Killarney celebrates 150 years this year – opened in 1867,” said Fr Liam McCarthy, guardian of the Friary. “ “After 150 years it is a happy event that it now becomes an Inter Provincial Novitiate House of the Order.”

South Kerry Ploughing
Three Wise Men Lined Up For Style Event THREE wise men have been lined up to choose the best-dressed lady at this weekend’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show on Fleming’s Farm in Grenagh, Fossa, in Killarney. Local insurance agent and DJ Gavin O’Leary, who was the best-dressed man at the Killarney Races in July, will be joined by master entertainer Jack Patrick Healy – described as Killarney’s Liberace – and dapper gentleman farmer Sean O’Donoghue as the celebrity adjudicators in the style contest. They will also select the best-dressed man and the most eye-catching Wellingtons with fantastic prizes up for grabs for the winners, including overnight stays in the five-star Europe Hotel and Resort for the best-dressed winners and a voucher for MacBees boutique. Sunday’s daylong carnival will also feature a bonny baby contest with a prize of a full Kerry GAA playing strip for the winner while Macra na Feirme will be back with their hugely popular celebrity dunking Super Soaker stall

and a traditional tug-o-war. In addition to hosting a rugby blitz on the day, Killarney Rugby Club members will run the fun maze in the maize.
Now in its fourth year, the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show is a charity community event, which has already helped to
generate in excess of €60,000 for local organisations and this year’s beneficiaries will be the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus. It is organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club and there will be several celebrities in attendance on the day, mingling with the thousands of people expected to flock to the venue on the main Killarney to Killorglin road. It will also incorporate the National Rally of the Irish Vintage Society and the show will feature a round of the Irish Tractor Pulling Championships which is always a great spectacle. There will be an all-breed dog show with several prize categories, as well as fun zones, food zones and live music. A major traffic management plan will be enforced while the Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show will take place in an adjoining 60 acres of land owned by the Fleming family. Visitors are asked to follow the instructions of the stewards and Gardaí.

very funny questions were asked! The Chat Room is a new weekly feature in Killarney Advertiser. In some cases, two very different people will sit on our couch and interview one another to get to know each other a little better. We will be posting videos every Friday on our website and Facebook page.
Tune in tomorrow also to get inside information about the upcoming South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show which takes place in Grenagh, Fossa, this Sunday. The family fun day will be a topclass day out and you can check out our video interviewing the organisers from Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club, including chairman Tom Leslie.
Killarney 10 Mile In Aid Of Microtrack THE momentum behind the Killarney Community Microtrack project is strong and the committee will host its popular Killarney 10 Mile event on Saturday, September 23. This is the fourth year of the event, for which entries are being taken online through www.killarney10mile. com. “Participants come from all over the world and from the four corners of Ireland,” said Jerry Griffin of the project. There’s always a great atmosphere at the finish on the site of the proposed project at St Brendan’s College.” The events starts from near the Bal-
lydowney roundabout on Port Road at 9am. If you would like to volunteer or help steward the event, contact Brid Stack, 087-2650720, John O’Shea 087-2348824, or Jerry Griffin, 0876879186. “With regards to the status of the project €100k has been raised so far and have other events coming up shortly to raise further funds,” said Jerry. “The project requires necessary funds through grant aid and are working through the processes. The status of the project is that it is alive and well and moving forward.”
KILLARNEY ADVERTISER started its series of online videos in the past fortnight and they have proved a huge success, reaching record figures. The first one was shot by digital journalist Aishling O’Hanlon down on Muckross Traditional Farms and it starred our very own business development manager Kieran Healy together with Rose of Tralee escort Jackie Healy-Rae Junior who got to learn all about butter-making for Heritage Week. The resulting banter was a major hit. Last week Aishling caught up with the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil winners CCE Killarney at Ross Castle and again, viewership went through the roof. This week we promise even more fun so be sure to tune in! See updates on www.killarneyadvertiser.ie and our Facebook page.
East Kerry Awards
Stars To Shine Brightly Over East Kerry
Properties Searched In Drugs Probe THREE properties were searched by Killarney Gardaí in a targeted drugs operation in the Killarney area during the week. The investigation, on Thursday, targeted the supply of controlled drugs in the town. Gardaí have confirmed that a sniffer dog was used during the operation.
It is understood that two of the properties were in the town while the other property was in the Milltown/ Listry area. Small quantities of drugs were seized but there were no arrests. However it is expected that people will appear before the courts later in the year when investigations have concluded.
THE East Kerry O’Donoghue Cup and All Stars were launched in The Gleneagle Hotel last Friday. Special guests included relatives of Dr Paddy O’Donoghue in whose honour the O’Donoghue Cup is presented, including his son Fr Paddy O’Donoghue and daugh-
ter Finola Spillane as well as his grandchildren, together with last year’s East Kerry Senior Player of the Year, Rathmore’s Aidan O’Mahony. The All Star Awards were launched by East Kerry president John Kelly. The gala banquet will take place in January 2018 in The Gleneagle Hotel.

KILLARNEY Municipal District Mayor Councillor Niall Kelleher will present the 2017 Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award to Sr Orla Treacy, a Loreto Sister in South Sudan. Sr Orla, from Bray, Co Wicklow, will be honoured on Saturday evening, November 4, at a ceremony in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. This year marks the tenth year of the memorial commemoration of the Monsignor, organised to raise awareness of his humanitarian work during World War Two when he and his colleagues in the Rome Escape Line saved over 6,500 people from the clutches of the Nazis who had occupied Rome at the time. Sr Orla was nominated by Mar-
tin Rosney from Bray, Co Wicklow. Born in 1973, she moved with her family at the age of two to Tralee where her father Blaise Treacy took up the position of Kerry County Secretary. When she was six, the Treacys relocated to Bray. After spending a summer in India with the Loreto Sisters, at the age of 24 she decided to join the order and in 2006 headed to the large African state of Sudan with four other Loreto nuns to establish a mission in a diocese the size of Italy with just two secondary schools. Now principal of Loreto Secondary School in Rumbek in Lakes State, she has spent the last 11 years in Sudan, experiencing the trauma of South Sudan becoming an autonomous independent state in 2011 followed by civil war in 2013.

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL member Councillor Donal Grady said Princess Diana’s links to Kerry should be promoted. The Killarney native sad Princess Diana and Mother Teresa are the two people he admires most outside of his own family. James Boothby Burke Roche, Diana’s great grandfather, was elected as an MEP in east Kerry in 1896.
Speaking on Radio Kerry, Cllr Grady says this link and Queen Victoria’s visit to Killarney need to be promoted in order to boost UK visitor numbers. He told presenter Jerry O’Sullivan an invitation should be extended to the Royal family including the Queen and Princes William and Harry. Yesterday was 20 years to the day since Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris.

In July, the club celebrated a national win with gold medals for the club’s Women’s Junior 14 Quad crew at the Irish Championships Regatta held in Cork. On the evening, the club also officially named and launched its newest racing boat, a Wintech Quadruple Scull. The boat has been named the ‘Friends of Muckross Lottery’, to honour the immense contribution made by the local ticket sellers. Prior to the unveiling, the boat was blessed by Fr Kieran O’Brien and the official reveal of the boat’s new name was carried out by two of Muckross Lottery’s longest supporters and ticket sellers, Kathleen Murphy and Johnny Doolan.

Can I Be Seen? THIS is a question we all need to ask ourselves before we venture out on public roads, going toe to toe with cars or trucks, either by foot or on a pushbike. But before answering the aforementioned question, think about this – weighing in at less than 90kg made up mainly of soft and squishy organs in a fragile frame and considering your opponent weighs in at anything between 1.2t to 40t, made up mainly from a reinforced steel crash structure able to withstand high-impact collisions, the odds are very much with the latter. Visibility to our opponent is the best chance of staying out of trouble. But that does not seem to be the thinking. Despite our over-regulated society, rules don’t seem to apply to everyone for some reason. We cast common sense to the winds which means our chances of getting through life unscathed are very much dimin-
ished as we blithely disregard our own sense of self-preservation by taking a stealth-like approach to the simple issue of being seen on the road. Giving the approaching motorist all possible visual information as to our whereabouts as early as we humanly can, in my view, is our best chance of steering out of trouble. The risk will al-
ways be there but more people need to participate in risk reduction. Recently I was cycling on a straight secondary road only to be startled by a bike’s mechanical noise coming toward me. I couldn’t see anything. Suddenly I had just enough time to focus on this passer-by dressed in all black cycling training gear. The bike
Appliance of Science
was matte black all over with no sign of a light or any other reflective surface to be seen, blending almost chameleon-like into the undergrowth of the roadside. I haven’t figured this out – is this fashion? Is this cool? I don’t understand. As a fellow cyclist I feared for his safety but this quickly turned to anger that his disregard for his own safety was now in the hands of an unsuspecting motorist – that motorist could be any one of us. A motorist can only compute the visual information that is at hand. Delivering this visual information is the responsibility of every road user. But let’s face it, in an accident the laws of physics have already determined the outcome. Put aside regulation and fashion taste, just apply a simple case of self-preservation and ask the question before venturing out – CAN I BE SEEN?

Galaxy Hunting
Three Times Lucky
It’s time to look up, says Trevor O’Donoghue
THE Beaufort GAA Club lotto jackpot was won for the third draw in a row last week. Not only that, but remarkably all winning tickets were sold by club officer Tim Coffey.

The Andromeda Galaxy, a swirling cloud of hundreds of billions of stars and our nearest galactic neighbour.
GET OUT to the country on a clear night and look up and you will be treated to many hundreds and possibly thousands of stars twinkling and shimmering. Our eyes are capable of seeing 6000 stars without optical aid. That’s about 3000 in the northern hemisphere and depending on the amount of light pollution and haze, and the condition of our eyes typically a few hundred to a few thousand stars are visible. Each star is a sun and most have planets around them. Whether they are suitable for life or not is another question. Each star that you see is part of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, a vast cloud of over 100 thousand, million stars (100 billion). The Milky Way is so vast that light travelling at 300,000 kilometres a second will take over 100,000 years to pass from one side of the galaxy to the other! The Milky Way is just one of many billions of galaxies in our universe and the good news
is that our nearest galactic neighbour, the Andromeda galaxy can be glimpsed with our naked eye from a dark site. To spot it, we need to perform a few star jumps. Firstly find the constellation the Plough, then draw an imaginary line from the second star in the “handle” through the North Star and on for the same distance again. That should bring you to the constellation Cassiopeia, a distinct W or M shape. Next go back to the North Star and draw a line through the middle star of the W and continue on for almost the same distance again. You should come across a faint fuzzy patch of sky. This is the Andromeda galaxy home to a trillion stars and over 2.5 million light years away. Imagine, the light from the galaxy that is hitting your eyeball is 2.5 million years old and has been travelling since before modern humans had evolved and left before our ancestors lit their first fire.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around Opinion
Words: Eve Kelliher
Let’s Toast To The Idea Of Café Bars OUR drinking culture has changed dramatically in recent years as illustrated by the headlines proclaiming that Ireland is no longer the heaviest drinking nation in the EU. Now that we are no longer a nation of binge drinkers, let’s bring back the café bar proposal from several years ago to properly reflect this welcome change. Back in 2000, Ireland was top of the EU board for the heaviest drinking nation of the 27 countries measured, but figures from a 2014 European Commission have revealed that Ireland is not just above average. A massive drop of 23.6% in those 14 years have placed Ireland 12th, dropping to an average of 10.6 litres of pure alcohol consumed per
Opinion
person. The goal of the recent Public Health (Alcohol) Bill is to get this number even lower, to 9.1 litres per person,
making Ireland one of the lowest alcohol consumers in the EU. It should be good news for those of us who have always enjoyed the
café-bar culture so prevalent on the Continent. Back in 2005, the great café bar debate cause bitter division and was regarded almost as a city-country divide. But small rural bars that may at that time have been opposed to such a move would surely now welcome it as a lifeline? Our tastes have definitely changed in the past decade or more. Look at Killarney over the past summer or two – outdoor seating and an appetite for lattes and mochas of almost every conceivable description rivals our taste for pints. Why not enjoy socialising as they do in Mediterranean countries, putting the “sociable” aspect back into socialising without the need for frenzied pub-crawls?

Drop In British Visitor Numbers Is Worrying THE cheery accents of tourists from across the Irish Sea were part and parcel of summer in Killarney for several decades. But the distinct absence of these welcome visitors from the UK on the streets of the town was something we all noticed this year. And this week Kerry hoteliers expressed serious concern about the significant drop in British visitors during the first seven months of the year. The latest CSO figures announced show a decrease of 6.2% in trips from our largest market compared to the same period last year. Patrick O’Donoghue, chair of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, said the recent recovery in tourism is now under threat as a result of Brexit, with fewer people from Britain visiting Ireland due to the significant drop in the value of Sterling and increased economic uncertainty. “Tourism in Kerry in particular relies heavily on the UK market, so any fall-off in numbers gives cause for serious concern,” said
Mr O’Donoghue. “While the drop in visitors from Britain has been offset by increases in other markets, such as North America and the rest of Europe, we are seeing a significant slowdown in tourism growth so far this year. An additional concern is a weakening in visitor numbers from Northern Ireland that is also occurring. These are worrying trends both for the national tourism industry and our local economy.” So far this year visitors from the rest of Europe are up 4.3% while visitors from North America are up 17.4%, resulting in an overall increase in overseas visitors of 3.1% compared to 12.7% for the same period last year. “Tourism has received a welcome uplift in recent years which is being felt on the ground here in Kerry, where it is a major contributor to our economy, generating €508 million and supporting 11,900 jobs. However, we cannot afford to take this recovery for granted,” said Mr O’Donoghue.
Patrick O’Donoghue, chairman, Kerry IHF.
Those With Higher Intellects ‘More Likely To Curse’ MUSIC to the ears of the foul-mouthed – a new study has shown intelligent people are more likely to swear. Not only that but they are also more likely to eat spicy breakfasts and walk around the house naked. Researchers at the University of Rochester quizzed 1,000 people about 400 typical behaviours, and discovered a strong link between intelligence and swearing. During the study, all participants were asked to state how often they performed 400 behaviours,
and how often. Extroverts, as you’d probably expect, like to drive
cars faster than 75mph, gamble, tell dirty jokes, and drink a lot. The study explored the complexity surrounding each different personality type, and the array of behaviours associated with each one. Its findings were published in the Personality and Individual Difference journal. Another study previously found that people who can name the most swear words in a minute tend to score higher on IQ tests. And a benefit of swearing is that it acts as a natural pain relief.

Glamping
The Kerry Tent That Costs More Than A Five-Star Hotel
A NEW luxury “glamping” experience in Dromquinna Manor will cost campers €450 a night. The tents measure six by seven metres and include an ensuite bathroom. Dromquinna Manor’s Hideaways experience at its glamping site costs €450 per night per couple. Glamping – short for “glamorous camping” – typically involves luxury accommodation in a traditional canvas tent or Mongolian-style yurt, often including a real bed, a stove and other comforts. Prices are usually higher than for basic campsites. But what do you get for €450? According to John Brennan, proprietor of Dromquinna Manor and the Park Kenmare Hotel and occasional TV personality, “Value is not always related to price. This is a really unique and spe-
cial place. It is so peaceful with nothing in front of you except the water.” The Hideaways will open next summer for three months and already customers are making bookings. So how does it compare with staying in a hotel? Well, a night at the Brennans’ Park Hotel with breakfast costs from €380, and glamping with breakfast at the Hideaway Dromquinna Manor costs from €450. The hotel’s existing glamping tents cost €150 for two, or €185 for a family of two adults and two children per night. For more information see dromquinnamanor.com. Few glamping prices are as steep as luxury camping at Electric Picnic, where rental of bell tents and yurts ranges from €600 to €2,200 for the three nights.
Trump Corner
‘Ireland Could Suffer If Trump’s Tax Plans Succeed’ IRELAND could have something to worry about if Donald Trump succeeds in bringing down corporate tax rates. Trump has vowed to stick to his plan of bringing down corporate tax rate to 15%, from around 35%, referring to Ireland and other countries in his speech on Wednesday. A former economic adviser to
President Trump, Stephen Moore, has blamed the loss of US business to many countries, including Ireland, on the US having “the highest business tax rate in the world”. “It just doesn’t work anymore in this globally competitive world,” he said to Newstalk Breakfast.

Floral Tributes To Diana DOZENS of floral tributes, photos and messages were laid at the gates of London’s Kensington Palace on Thursday as Britain remembered Princess Diana on the 20th anniversary of her death in a Paris car crash. Royal fans gathered at the palace, Diana’s former home, to mark two decades since the princess’ death triggered a flood of grief across Britain and beyond, reported the Associated Press. The 36-year-old princess died in the
early hours of August 31, 1997. Her Mercedes, pursued by paparazzi, crashed into a concrete pillar in the Alma Tunnel in Paris while traveling at more than 60 mph (100 kph). Diana, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their driver Henri Paul were all killed. Her bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, was injured but survived. In Paris, royal watchers also gathered at the Alma Tunnel to remember her life.
Explosions At Texas Chemical Plant Flooded After Hurricane Harvey A CHEMICAL plant in Texas that lost power after Hurricane Harvey engulfed the area in extensive floods has been rocked by two explosions, the plant’s operator said. Arkema said in a statement on its website that the Harris County Emergency Opera-

Man Charged Over ‘Unprovoked’ Stabbing In Tralee A MAN WHO allegedly stabbed another man a number of times in broad daylight in an “unprovoked attack” in Tralee this week has been refused bail and remanded in custody to appear before Tralee District Court on September 6.

Kerry Tech Firm Take On The Digital Banking Sector KERRY tech firm Expert Software Test is aiming to make a splash in the digital banking sector. The Killorglin start-up Expert Software Test is preparing for the launch of an innovative application software programme interface (API) testing product at the end of September, and is aiming to develop global sales to the digital banking sector. APIs allow software applications to communicate with each other, said Expert Software Test chief executive Fergal Hynes, who identified a gap in the market for a product which could be used by API developers to test their
products. An engineer with 23 years’ experience in the software development and test industries, Mr Hynes saw an opportunity two years ago to set up a consultancy company specialising in API testing. He subsequently identified an opening for a software product which could be used to automate aspects of the API development process. He set up Expert Software Test in Killorglin in April 2015 and almost immediately signed up Australian company ipSCAPE, which is a cloud-based call centre, as his first consultancy client.

Wedding of the Week
Dinah and Liam say ‘I do’ SCENIC Sneem formed the perfect backdrop to the nuptials of Dinah McCarthy and Liam O’Brien. Killarney native Dinah wed Liam, who is from Birmingham, in a ceremony in Parknasilla Hotel and Spa led by registrar Mary O’Shea. Special guests on the big day included the bride’s son Dimitris McCarthy, her parents Helen and Christy McCarthy, and the groom’s mother and stepfather Ann and Malcolm Crump. The couple, who met three years ago, got engaged last year. The witnesses at the wedding ceremony were the bride’s brother Adrian McCarthy and Michelle O’Halloran, the groom’s sister. The couple paid tribute to Marie McDonnell and the team Parknasilla as well as their photographer Sally MacMonagle. “Her informal relaxed approach worked a treat, especially when taking pictures of the children. She did a fantastic job!” said Liam. “It was wonderful to share the day with our special friends and family that travelled from as far as Devon in the UK to share this wonderful occasion with us.” The couple enjoyed a “pre-honeymoon” in Borneo. “We stayed on a boathouse and travelled though the national park to search for orangutans, then went onto other areas in Indonesia, including Bali and the Gili Islands, and finished in Lombok,” said the groom. Dinah is a speech and language therapist and Liam is a teacher. They are currently living in Milton Keynes.

Netflix - Icarus In the new Netflix documentary, a filmmaker accidentally captures how one of the biggest scandals in sporting history came to light. When he set out to make Icarus, the playwright and actor Bryan Fogel had one goal: to examine how easy it is to get away with doping in professional sport. An enthusiastic amateur cyclist, he was disturbed by the fact that someone like Lance Armstrong could cheat for so many years and never fail a single drug test. “Originally,” he explains in the film, “the idea I had was to prove the system in place to test athletes was broken.” What actually happened was a bit like tugging on an errant thread and having the entire clothing industry unravel right on top of you. Fogel, while conducting a human guinea-pig experiment in which he took performance-enhancing drugs to prepare for a race, was connected with
a Russian doctor who ended up blowing the whistle on a state-sponsored doping scheme that had been ongoing in Russia for decades. Icarus, initially intended as a Super Size Me–style effort to poke holes in the anti-doping system, ended up capturing the maelstrom of one of the biggest scandals in sporting history. A fascinating must watch!

September 2nd, 20:00 New series. Dermot O’Leary returns with the long-running talent contest, which is now entering its 14th year. As ever, wouldbe pop icons from all walks of life queue down the street for a moment in the spotlight as the auditions process begins, but it
remains to be seen whether the contestant who will ultimately replace last year’s winner Matt Terry as champion will be among the first acts to present themselves to the panel. Louis Walsh, Nicole Scherzinger and Sharon Osbourne all return to take their places at the judges’ desk, alongside ever-present X Factor supremo Simon Cowell.

of stunning wild rugged mountain terrain as they participated in Killarney’s Ultimate High Peaks Challenge. Organised by Piaras and Catherine Kelly of KerryClimbing.ie the one-day event unfolded in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks.

Criticism Of Halawa Trial Postponement I WOULD like to criticise and express my disappointment at the postponement of the trial of imprisoned Irishman, Ibrahim Halawa, once again, on Monday. I was an author of the European Parliament’s December 2015 resolution that called on the Egyptian authorities to release Mr Halawa “immediately and unconditionally” to the Irish authorities. Mr Halawa’s inability to get a fair trial for four years is a clear violation of his human rights. Whatever the circumstances, every person is entitled to fair and independent hearing. Between constant postponements and the use of the mass trial format, Ibrahim has been denied his basic human rights over the past four years.
Lest we forget, Ibrahim was still a teenager when he was first arrested. The constant postponements are simply unacceptable. I was the first MEP to raise this issue in Parliament almost four years ago and could not have imagined then that it would still be ongoing in August 2017. It has been a truly awful time for Ibrahim and his family. I once again urge the Egyptian authorities to release Mr Halawa and allow him to return to Ireland where he can finally resume his studies and get on with his life. Sean Kelly MEP, Ireland South and Leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament, Brussels

‘Canada’s Record Is A Warning’ THE Taoiseach’s recent visit to Canada had the truly extraordinary moment of the Canadian President advising the Taoiseach to see abortion as a fundamental human right. Canada is practising what it preaches and babies can be aborted up to the full nine months of pregnancy, and an astonishing one in five pregnancies are ended by abortion there. This is what happens when so-called “choice” is given free rein and responsibility is abandoned. Unborn babies’ lives are ended because of disability, because of how they were conceived or even because they are
unborn baby girls. This is what happens when the unborn are perceived as an “it” and not a person, simply because they are not wanted. Canada’s record is a warning to the people of this country, and using human rights language to justify the unjustifiable ending of innocent unborn babies’ lives is one of the horrors of this century that our descendants will surely look back on and ask “Why did no-one shout stop”. Thank You From Spraoi Chiarrai JUST a note of thanks to all of you who helped ensure success again this season. As we pull the curtains closed on the Spraoi Chiarraí summer concert season, we are delighted to report a bumper season. Our generous sponsors again kicked in but special mention to Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce. They really pulled out all the stops this year. Added to their financial support we received substantial promotional support in the form of social media and the New Street banners and street signs. This
extra effort was clear in bumping up audience figures. We achieved the highest audience numbers ever this year in our 13th season. Added to this we expect a brand-new Spraoi Chiarrai promotional video from young media maker Darren Besston of Beaufort. We have already booked the dates for the 2018 season. Míle buíochas. gan g u D l Jil Summer is at an end and it’s time to get back into your exercise routine, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio
Time To Tone Up SOMETIMES life happens and we can get a little off track. Family commitments pop up, sickness kicks in, or you get stuck with overtime at work. Then all of a sudden your exercise routine goes from regular to non-existent. I know what it’s like to have a really good routine and then something unexpected happens. You miss a few workouts and then all of a sudden you’re in a rut. So the question is — how do you get back into routine? If you have found yourself a little off track and needing a motivation boost, here are some of my tips on how to restart your exercise habit and get back into a healthy routine. Just start with something easy. Commit to 30 minutes, two-three times a week. Remember how good it makes you feel. Schedule it in your diary. Prepare your gym bag. Take a one-month challenge. Get an exercise buddy. Don’t just think gym, try a free trial on our Pilates-based toning tables – you’ll be amazed and delighted with results and how great you will feel. Do it for yourself, not anyone else.

CONGRATULATIONS to Haven Kennelly’s Pharmacy which has won a coveted accolade. Haven Kennelly’s was awarded the Crystal Clear health literacy mark by healthcare company MSD and the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA). As such, it is one of the leading pharmacies promoting health literacy in Ireland, helping its customers better understand their medication and treatments. This programme has been running since 2015 and recognises the critical role pharmacies play in helping patients understand
their health issues. So far, 59 pharmacies have been recognised through the initiative for their high standards in patient education. To be awarded the Crystal Clear Mark, Haven Kennelly’s Pharmacy had to complete an audit across a number of areas to show how their pharmacy was “health literacy friendly” and communicating clearly with customers in accessible ways. 01.09.17 In Brief
Grace Foley was inspired by the recent World Athletic Championships
Value Your Showmanship THE sheer dedication it takes to do what participants in the World Athletic Championships do is incredible and it is sad to see when they fail, even after all their years of effort. It can all end in one jump or throw or sprint. People often compare sports people with singers and musicians, especially solo performers. We all train for years and the psych of both athletes and musicians can be very similar. Sportspeople have sports psychologists, not to help them stretch or run faster, but to help them with the inner game. This is the game in your head where you can beat yourself without even needing an opponent present. You can actually see that many of these athletes have a physical routine they perform right before they compete. It could be anything from a series of hand movements to a mantra they chant. Performing as a singer involves very similar practic-
es. The mind needs to be kept positive or you will have failed before you even step on stage. Another thing we all have in common is showmanship. I was very struck by the amount of theatrical performances that took place in the arena! Before the events we get to see each individual or team as they are introduced. Some simply wave while others dance and some teams even have a little choreographed routine. Anytime we do something in public, be it singing or running, giving a presentation or taking a free kick, we are all performing. We are all the focus of other people’s attention, even if just for a moment. So next time you are performing in public, whatever the circumstance, don’t forget your inner game and definitely don’t forget your showmanship! • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

Ferrari Loses Testarossa Name
Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Goes Topless For Pebble Beach MERCEDES-MAYBACH has unveiled a new luxurious cabriolet based on the imposing 6 Coupe it revealed at last year’s Paris motor show. The new Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet was revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. Measuring in at 5.7 metres in length, the latest Maybach concept features the Coupe’s huge grille and large 24-inch multi-spoke alloys wheels, but gets a fabric roof featuring interwoven
rose gold threads. To keep its wealthy occupants happy when on board, the Vision 6 uses biometric sensors to analyse the state of mind of the driver and passenger. Featuring plenty of luggage space where you would expect to find an engine, the 6 Cabriolet, like its coupe sibling, is powered by four electric motors delivering a combined output of more than 550kW. This enables the convertible to hit 100km/h in less than 4.0 seconds.
SOME of the most expensive cars sold at auction carry the Testarossa name, but Ferrari will never use it again because it can’t. A court in Germany has ruled that Ferrari doesn’t own the badge anymore, and that a German toy-maker does. The court’s decision insists that Ferrari’s 20 years without a Testarossa model means it has abandoned the name. It instead awarded the rights to the name to toy company Autec AG. Ferrari had claimed ownership of both the ‘Testa Rossa’ and ‘Testarossa’ names. The 250 Testa Rossa began production in 1957 and went on to win the

It was last used on the Ferrari 512 Testarossa flat-12 coupe between 1984 and 2006. HAPPY birthday to Noreen O’Donoghue of Glenflesk who had plenty of help in blowing out those all-important candles. Noreen was surrounded by her family and close friends who surprised her with a party to mark her milestone 90th birthday in the Torc Hotel in Lissivigeen on Friday.

“It’s the first time in years the whole O’Donoghue family have been together for such a gathering,” said Noreen’s granddaughter Norma O’Donoghue. Leading the celebrations with Noreen were her daughters Rose O’Donoghue McKenzie Vass, Margaret Breen and Sheila O’Sullivan and her sons Sean, Donie, Patrick and Mike O’Donoghue.
Also there to wish Noreen well were her 28 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Very much in their thoughts were Noreen’s daughters the late Mary Jo O’Neill and the late Noreen Gabriel and son the late Tom O’Donoghue.

There is no light without a dawning, No winter without a spring, And beyond the horizon Our hearts will once again sing... For those who leave us for a while Have only gone away Out of a restless, careworn world, Into a brighter day.
You are not far - No further away Than the morning is to the Promise of day, Than the stars are to the night, Than the sun to the sky, You are not far - This is not goodbye You are not far - you are always near In the memories that we hold most dear, In the hearts that still care, In the love that goes on. You will never be far, You will never be gone. Always loved and remembered by Mom, Dad, William and family, Sharon and family, Paudie and family.

Separately, the out-of-hours GP service for Kerry, SouthDoc received €1,058,799 in gross payments from the Health Service Executive. Garden Magic Debby Looney
The time has come for Debby Looney to admit that autumn is here
One For Every Situation IN HONOUR of autumn’s arrival, I am going to write about a plant which is very popular, very common but often overlooked as a decorative plant. I am going to write about the humble Cotoneaster. I would be quite confident in betting that everyone has one in their garden. It may be a legacy from days long past, as mine in the ditch is, or it may be a prized specimen in the centre of your lawn. Either way, it is often a plant which is used as groundcover, or filler, in a part of the garden which is functional, or forgotten about! The reason it is so common is simple: with over 200 varieties to choose from, there is one for every situation. Cotoneasters are native to Asia, particularly the Himalayas and China, and as such are fully hardy here. They come as groundcover plants, bushes or trees. Many are evergreen, or semi-evergreen, though there are a lot of deciduous varieties also. Most have white/pink-tinged flowers which are very attractive to bees, which are followed by masses of, usually, red berries, particularly favoured by thrushes and blackbirds. If your soil is very acidic, a little lime each year will be of great benefit to them. Cotoneaster procumbens ‘Queen of carpets’ is a very low growing, spreading evergreen variety. C. ‘Coral Beauty’ is another excellent groundcover, growing to about three feet in height, but spreading eight feet. C. horizontalis, also called ‘Wall Spray’, is an excellent choice for planting against a low wall. It reaches a height of about four feet with an equal spread. C. lacteus is a dense, evergreen variety, ideally suited as a hedging plant. C. ‘Cornubia’ is a very popular semi-evergreen small tree. It has elegant arching branches, flowers and fruits prolifically, and is a vigorous grower. C. ‘Hybridus Pendulus’ is another groundcover, but more commonly grown as a small standard weeping tree. C. frigidus is a large deciduous tree, with a peeling bark and large red berries. There is a yellow-berried variety also, ‘Fructu Luteo’. C. ‘Rothschildianus’ is a small tree, with bright green foliage. It produces creamy yellow berries. C. ‘Pink Champagne’ has pink berries, and C. ‘Salmon Spray’ has – surprisingly – salmon coloured berries. • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
Time For Creation Events In The Diocese Of Kerry
TODAY, Friday, September 1, is the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation and it marks the start of a five-week dedicated Time for Creation across Christian churches globally. This Am Cruthaithe is a time to grow in awareness, pray and take decisive action to promote care for all creation. The Diocese of Kerry will hold a prayer service in the town park in Tralee at 6.45pm this Friday. The Diocesan Justice and Peace committee has chosen “Cherishing God’s Gift of Food” as the focus theme for the Time for Creation events. There is a reflection brochure available in all parishes as well as online www.dioceseofkerry.ie offering points to ponder and simple activities for use at home and in parishes. On Tuesday, September 12, Donal O’Leary will present a workshop on “Reducing Food Waste and Composting”. This takes place in the John Paul II Pastoral Centre in Killarney at 8pm. Donal’s expertise will enhance using practical tips Pope Francis’ understanding that “everything in the world is connected and that caring for the eco-system requires far-sightedness”. For those of you with culinary interests, Mark Doe will be presenting a cookery demonstration entitled “Being Creative with Leftovers” in Our Lady and St Brendan’s Pastoral Centre, Tralee, on Thursday, September 28, at 8pm. Pope Francis acknowledges the stark reality that almost a third of all food is discarded, and that “whenever food is thrown out, it is as if it were stolen from the table of the poor”. Learning new recipes might be one

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels
MATTHEW 16:21-27: Short-term loss is sometimes necessary for long-term gain, as a student studying, or an athlete training, can testify. When have you found that denying yourself proved to be worthwhile because of what you gained afterwards? Jesus was teaching his followers that the path of discipleship would involve pain and suffering. Peter would have none of it. When have you found that taking up your cross brought you life, even though at the time it may have been difficult? Jesus knew that because his good news message was not acceptable to the authorities he would suffer and die. In spite of this he trusted that the power of God would overcome evil. Have you seen a good news message survive even though opponents tried to stifle it? Jesus promised that those who suffer for the kingdom would be rewarded. Perhaps, even in this earthly life, you have experienced reward for faithful discipleship. What have these rewards been? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

Kerry Miles Off The Pace As Mayo Romp To Famous Win The Kingdom were expected to find another gear in the replay but defeat to Mayo raises a lot of difficult questions, writes Adam Moynihan

All-Ireland Senior Championship Semi-Final (Replay) Mayo 2-16 Kerry 0-17
There’s no great shame in losing to a good team in an All-Ireland semi-final but the manner of Saturday’s defeat really leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It was an abysmal performance by Kerry and, in truth, the five-point margin of victory didn’t flatter Mayo in the slightest. Kerry were second best at virtually every turn. It’s probably more practical to go through the things that went right; you’d be all day trying to list the things that went wrong. Paul Geaney gave a good account of himself as he has done all year but there’s something seriously amiss when your star forward kicks two points from play and he’s still your standout player. Paul Murphy also continued his impressive form in the green and gold and Rathmore man has well
“Kerry were second best at virtually every turn. It’s probably more practical to go through the things that went right; you’d be all day trying to list the things that went wrong
and truly established himself as one of Kerry’s most reliable players. Substitutes James O’Donoghue and Fionn Fitzgerald made positive contributions when they were introduced and you’d have to wonder why they weren’t involved from the start. I know there were whispers that James wasn’t going to play the drawn game due to injury but if he’s fit enough to come on at half time then you have to start him. It’s as simple as that. Shane Enright had a tough time on Andy Moran but the Mayo man was on fire and it’s possible that no Kerry back would have kept him quiet over the two ties. Having said all that, it was surely worth making a change to at least try. Eamonn Fitzmaurice has earned a reputation for being a bit obdurate and making unconventional calls. He’ll know as well as anyone that as a manager you live and die by those big decisions and on Saturday you’d have to say that he got a lot of things wrong. Of course, it’s easy point out all of these errors in hindsight. If it wasn’t for a crazy turnover in the closing stages of the drawn match, there wouldn’t have even been a replay to collapse in and we’d be preparing for another All-Ireland Final. (Considering how dominant Dublin looked against Tyrone, maybe X we dodged a bullet there.) The big question for Mayo is can they go one step further and end the 66-year curse? They were really terrific against Kerry but Dublin will be a far more challenging prospect. It’s actually shaping up to be an excellent final between two very exciting teams. I suppose it would be nice to see Mayo finally win one, although they’ve fallen at the final hurdle so many times now it’s genuinely getting frustrating for the neutrals, never mind their long-suffering fans. For Kerry, meanwhile, a long winter of soul-searching looms. KERRY SCORERS: Paul Geaney (0-10, 8f), James O’Donoghue (0-3, 1f), Jonathan Lyne (0-1), Johnny Buckley (0-1), Jack Barry (0-1) and Fionn Fitzgerald (0-1). KERRY TEAM: Brian Kelly; Shane Enright, Tadhg Morley, Killian Young; Paul Murphy, Jonathan Lyne, Peter Crowley; Jack Barry, David Moran; Tom O’Sullivan, Stephen O’Brien, Johnny Buckley; Donnchadh Walsh, Paul Geaney, Kieran Donaghy. SUBS: Darran O’Sullivan for Buckley (HT), James O’Donoghue for Walsh (HT), Fionn Fitzgerald for Enright (39 mins), Jack Savage for D O’Sullivan (45 mins, black card), Mark Griffin for Young (51 mins) and Barry John Keane for T O’Sullivan (63 mins).

Kerry No Match For Mayo In Replay 01.09.17
Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald
Kerry were outwitted and outplayed in last Saturday’s All Ireland SFC as Mayo marched on with an impressive 2-16 to 0-17 victory making it a Mayo v Dublin duel in the All Ireland final on September 17. The attendance was 50,032. Mayo have the physicality to take on the Dubs in the final but that will hardly be enough to bring the Sam Maguire across the Shannon to Mayo, who have to reach back to 1951 when they last won the title. They have benefited from the long road of the back door system, improving all the time. They learned a lot from the drawn game against Kerry and they never wavered in their resolve.
Changes Mayo took the initiative from the throw -in and they never relented throughout. Kerry made several changes. Tom O’Sullivan started and James O’Donoghue was left off until half time when he came on for Donnchadh Walshe who was obviously not match fit. Jonathan Lyne was preferred to Mark Griffin, who eventually came on for Killian Young in the 51st minute. Jack Barry started at midfield along side David Moran. Anthony Maher was dropped and came on as a blood sub for Barry in the 65th minute. Paul Murphy started in the sweeper role. The changes from the drawn game did not work as Mayo were the better team from the outset
Donie Buckley Such was the intensity of Mayo’s play that Kerry could not get a foothold on the game. This Mayo team displayed all the hallmarks of Donie Buckley such was their passion, aggression and controlled fury in the tackle. The Castleisland man had Mayo in the right frame of mind and their percentage of possession to actual scores was much higher than normal. Kerry were chasing the game unlike the drawn game when the sides were level on 14 occasions. Mayo were so determined to hold on to the supremacy that they exerted from the outset.
17 Cards The referee dished out a whole range of cards, black, yellow and red 17, in total, such was the intensity and physicality of it all. Kerry lost Peter Crowley in the 63rd minute for a second yellow and this was crucial as Kerry were just four points adrift at that stage. Darran O’Sullivan, who came on at half time for Johnny Buckley, was very unlucky to be black carded. Kieran Donaghy was issued a straight red for punching Aidan O’Shea in injury time. Paul Durcan was sent off on two yellows and Cillian O’Connor was also sent off for Mayo. In the drawn game Aidan O’Shea was pulled back from his normal centre forward position to mark Donaghy and that move was not successful. On Saturday last Donal Vaughan started on Kieran Donaghy aided by O’Shea to curb Star and on this occasion the strategy worked.
Kieran Donaghy clashes with Aidan O’Shea of Mayo which resulted in a red card for Kieran Donaghy. Pic: James Crombie/INPHO
Goals The two Mayo goals were crucial scored by Diarmuid O’Connor and the irrepressible Andy Moran. That second goal in particular dashed hopes of a Kerry revival. Moran headed for goal and then played a smart one two with O’Connor before palming it in to the net from close range. Shane Enright was called ashore and he was replaced by Fionn Fitzgerald. Goals win matches. Mayo got two opportunities and they raised the green flag on both occasions, whereas Kerry had four chances and failed to breach the Mayo rear guard. On one such effort they were denied a triple attempt, but to no avail. Great work on this occasion by David Clarke and his backs when it seemed that Stephen O’Brien must score the elusive goal that they needed so badly. Keith Higgins, Colm Boyle were very solid for Mayo and cut off the Kerry attack. Jason O’Doherty also impressed me, as did David Clarke, Kevin McLoughlin, Andy Moran and Tom Parsons. Star was not as impressive as he was in the drawn game so Kerry had to depend on Paul Murphy and Paul Geaney the only Kerry duo to play well. Geaney scored ten points in all and eight of these were from frees, a great return for the Dingle man. James O’Donoghue looked very sharp when he came on for the second half, scoring three points two from play. The Kerry management gambled by not starting him. It proved to be a costly mistake. Buckley was the only other forward to score a point. Kerry had a point each from Jonathan Lyne, Jack Barry and Fionn Fitzgerald. Kerry were just five points in arrears at half time, 1-8 to 0-6 but Mayo had such a stranglehold that they were not going to succumb to the Kerry tradition of a fightback. The loss of Crowley dashed any hopes of a Kingdom recovery.
David Clarke was very sharp on his kickouts finding his own men nearly all the time. Brian Kelly did not have it as clearcut. Mayo pushed up for his kickouts and when he was forced to kick it long the stronger physicality of the Mayo fielders invariably got possession, as they set about the search for more points. It was a disappointing end of season for Kerry. In the weeks ahead Kerry will return to the domestic scene and the county championships, while Mayo and Dublin prepare for the final. Here’s hoping that Mayo will win the final.
All Ireland title for Killarney Ladies Congratulations to the Killarney ladies who won the All Ireland Senior Cup last weekend and created their own bit of history since this was the first time that the club won this coveted title. The winning team was Mairead Martin, Valerie Clancy, Kelly Brotherton, Mary Sheehy, Claire Keating, Eimear O’Donnell and Ann Rudden. Mary Geaney and Sheila Crowley were the joint managers. Comhghairdeas ó chroí.
Hurling final The novel pairing of Waterford and Galway brings extra interest to next Sunday’s All Ireland SHC final. I expect Galway to win.
Minors Derry qualified to meet Kerry in the All Ireland MFC after defeating Dublin in the semi-final on Sunday last. I still fancy Kerry to win.
Ladies No joy for the Kerry senior ladies football team who were beaten in their All Ireland semi-final by Dublin 5-10 to 0-11. Sarah Murphy, a sister of Paul Murphy, was a member of this team.

Hamilton Takes First Blood
Words: Cormac Casey
THE F1 circus returned from summer break with Lewis Hamilton taking first blood at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. Hamilton was mostly unchallenged by the championship leader, Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton has closed the gap to seven points. Daniel Ricciardo came home in third place ten seconds behind the leading pair. His Red Bull teammate suffered his sixth DNF of the year, while Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas finished fourth and fifth respectively. The Belgian Grand Prix also saw Mercedes extend their lead over Ferrari in the F1 World Constructors’ Championship standings. Fernando Alonso’s McLaren Honda was true to form with another DNF. Honda only ran half of the proposed upgrades last weekend which is casting an even darker shadow over the survival of the McLaren – Honda partnership. However Honda have claimed that there was no fault in their engine that lead to Alonso’s re-
tirement. The big talking point over the weekend was rumours the Alonso could move to Williams F1 for 2018. With no room at Mercedes, Ferrari and RedBull
inn, Williams is the next best proposition. William have the all-conquering Mercedes engine again next year and have a potential vacant seat. That could be a very interesting prospect.
Athletic To Honour Double Heroes At Special Dinner KILLARNEY ATHLETIC will pay tribute to their double-winning senior squad at a special celebration dinner at the Killarney Race Course on Saturday, September 9. It has been an unforgettable year for the Blues who defeated town rivals Killarney Celtic in June to claim their first league title in the club’s 52-year history. They followed that up with victory over Mitchel’s Avenue in the cup final to seal a remarkable double and players, officials and supporters will come together on the 9th to celebrate in style. Proceedings kick-off at 7.30pm sharp with dinner. The players will then be presented with their medals and live music from Midnite Café will take the party well into the night. It promises to be a great evening of festivities and manager Stuart Templeman is expecting a memorable occasion. “It’s a night not only to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the A team this year but also to acknowledge the work done by every member, past and present, who has helped us get to where we are now,” he said. “And boy shall we celebrate.” Advertiser sports columnist Adam
Killarney Athletic captain Paudie O’Connor celebrates with his family following the cup final in July.
Moynihan, who plays for Athletic, says his teammates are really looking forward to the event. “We can’t wait,” he said. “We enjoyed our celebrations after the finals but this is a great chance to get together again and reflect on the year. It’s a nice touch by the club as well. They’ve really looked after
us and we couldn’t have achieved what we did without the likes of our chairman Mike O’Shea. This night is as much for the officials and the supporters as it is for us.” Tickets are €25 and are available from club officials. For more information, contact Mike at 0872226185.
This weekend the battle resumes in Ferrari’s backyard and the Italian support should give a lift to Ferrari’s performance at the famous Monza circuit.
Blitz
Jerry Foley U11 Memorial Blitz
AS ANYONE who has been involved in GAA will know, there is no rivalry more intense than the one between neighbouring parishes, but, it was great sportsmanship and camaraderie that were the themes of this years’ annual Jerry Foley U11 Memorial Blitz. Pairc Eamonn, Farranfore was the venue when U11 teams from Firies, Milltown/Castlemaine, Kilcummin, Ballymac, Listry and Newmarket, Co Cork, treated everyone in attendance to a spectacle of skill and teamwork. All teams took part in a round-robin series with the top two teams contesting the final. The two pitches in operation were hectic for the day but in the end, there could only be one winner with tenacious Ballymac taking home the spoils after a thrilling game against a brave Kilcummin side. After the final, Neil Foley, Jerry’s son, presented the annual cup to a victorious Ballymac with great scenes of jubilation. He also presented Newmarket’s Brían O’Keeffe with player of the blitz. Eugene Cosgrave, Firies GAA Coiste na nÓg Chairman, thanked all involved including Firies GAA’s two Kerry Minors Niall Donohue and Donnchadh O’Sullivan who wished the home side prior to their departure to Croke Park for the All-Ireland semi-final.

smalltalk 01.09.17
Amanda Brosnan
Kerry and Dr Crokes star Amanda Brosnan talks to Adam Moynihan about her teammates, last weekend’s semi-final and her favourite sporting memories There’s nothing worse than losing semi-finals… How hard is the Dublin defeat to take? Saturday was difficult. We fully believed that we’d be in Croke Park on All-Ireland Final day but things didn’t go right for us. Each year the losses get harder to take. We put so much time and commitment into achieving our dreams and it’s just taken away at the final whistle. It’s been a tough week.
Has it been a good year regardless? What was the highlight?
break out the vintage Primary Game gear or jerseys that are at least 12 years old for training every now and then though!
Who spends the most time in the gym? Sarah Houlihan! Have you seen her shoulders? Or Caroline’s sick arms?
I haven’t but I’ll take your word for it! If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for your club this year, who would it be? Katie Gleeson.
Yeah it has I suppose. We won Munster which was nice but I’d give all my Munster medals back to win the All-Ireland. The highlight has to be winning the Munster Final v Waterford and beating Cork in Fitzgerald Stadium to knock them out of the provincial championship for the first time in 13 years.
Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with?
How would you assess the current state of ladies football in Kerry?
If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be?
I think there is a lot being done but there’s a lot more to do to promote ladies football in Kerry. There are some fantastic players out there who have never played in a Kerry jersey. Some don’t want to because of the commitment that’s required and some have never been approached. The underage structure and development squads have been excellent over that last three or four years so hopefully that will reap rewards with the seniors in years to come. Unfortunately, girls of 13/14 have a high dropout rate of sport at that age, so anything to promote participation and continuity playing the game is vital.
How has the year been going for the Crokes? This year we had a few injuries to our key senior players and lost out in the Championship quarterfinal with a very young side by only one point. The average age of our team is about 19 I’d say. And I bring that average up; I’m a pensioner compared to some of the young ones!
Mags Cronin.
Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Lorraine Scanlon. She’s an all-rounder!
Who was your toughest ever opponent? Too hard to pick! Every opponent is tough.
It would have to Spa or Kilcummin. I’d be disowned if I put on the green and white.
What’s your proudest sporting moment? Winning this year’s Munster Final and playing midfield for Kerry. Or any of the Munster Finals to be honest. They don’t come easy against teams like Cork.
And the most embarrassing? We have a countdown timer in ladies intercounty football and I celebrated a little too early in this year’s Munster Final! The ref blew the whistle for a sideline ball with three seconds on the clock. I thought it was the final whistle! I leaped around celebrating and the game wasn’t even over.
What are your goals for the rest of 2017? Staying fit is number one. I might attempt a half marathon later in the year.
Which of your Crokes teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Rheanne O’Shea.
Who’s the best at Tinder? Denise Hallissey.
Who’s the biggest moaner? We all like to moan! We’re women!
Who’s the worst-dressed? I couldn’t comment on that… They wouldn’t talk to me ever again! I will say Totti (Caroline Kelly) likes to
Sometimes people call me Broz.
Do you have any superstitions? If I play well in a game I’ll try to wear the same shorts and socks for the next game.
Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? WhatsApp.
Who’s the best woman for the banter in the team group? The team group is usually just football stuff to be honest. Although there was running commentary on the Rose of Tralee last week which was entertaining!
What’s your most-used emoji?
That’s gas enough! If you had to compare yourself to a professional athlete, who would it be? Usain Bolt #jokes
What’s the best show on TV? Does Netflix count? I’m not a big TV person. Narcos was excellent.
How have you been playing yourself? In the off-season around November last year I took up running in the evenings. It has really stood to me because I don’t think I’ve ever been as fit. I played around the middle of the field with Kerry this year, covering lots of ground. It’s tough work but I trust my fitness for the first time in a long time. It’s easy when you’re fit, and I’m playing with confidence.
Do you have any nicknames?
Savage. What’s your favourite song at the moment? If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be?
Isn’t everyone’s Despacito? Although I’m yet to find someone who knows the words.
David Beckham, Jessica Ennis and Tommy Bowe.
What would you sing at karaoke?
What are your five favourite sports in order?
Any golden oldie or Irish song. Badly.
Gaelic football, basketball, hurling, soccer and chess.
Who’s the most famous person in your phone?
Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at?
Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh. The Female Gooch.
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Hurling/camogie. I wish we played it down this side of the county.
Blake Lively.
What’s the best sporting moment of all time?
What do you call a French man who wears sandals? I don’t know. Philippe Philoppe.
To pick the best of all time is too difficult but some of the memories that stand out are Katie Taylor’s first Olympic gold medal in 2012, Ronan O’Gara’s Grand Slam-winning drop goal in 2009, Robbie Brady’s goal in the Euros, and the O’Donovan brothers’ silver medal in Rio last year (and their interview afterwards!).
And last one… Can you tell me a joke?
That is pretty bad. Thanks Amanda! No problem at all.

Golfers On A Par With The Best KILLARNEY GOLF CLUB made history at the weekend when it won the ILGU Senior Cup for the first time. The All-Ireland Club Golf Championship-winning senior ladies team received a rapturous welcome when they arrived back to base at Killarney Golf Club. The club lined out the same team that beat the Island in the previous day’s semi-final. Killarney started strongly as internationals Mairead Martin and Valerie Clancy and Munster representative Kelly Brotherton all went two up early on in their matches. With a birdie on the 17th, Killarney were crowned Senior Cup champions for the first time in the club’s history.

Dublin Edge Out Kerry In Ladies Semi-Final DUBLIN booked their place in their fourth successive TG4 All-Ireland ladies senior football final after seeing of Kerry in Semple Stadium on Saturday. Dublin captain Sinéad Aherne led the way with 2-07 as Dublin get set to meet Cork or Mayo on September 24. The cruised to the final by seeing off Kerry by 14 points in Saturday evening’s semi-final. Lyndsey Davey had the ball in the Kingdom’s net in the fifth minute but referee Stephen McNulty whistled back for an earlier infringement. Two Aherne frees had Dublin 0-03 to 0-00 clear before Kerry finally opened their account in the sev-
enth minute, 16-year-old Hannah O’Donoghue slotting over a point. But Kerry registered six wides by half-time, in contrast to a more economical Dublin outfit, who were off target just once. Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh notched eight points for Kerry. KERRY : L Fitzgerald; E Lynch, A Desmond, A Leonard; C Kelly, C Murphy, S Murphy; L Scanlon, E Sherwood; A Brosnan, A Galvin, D Hallissey; S Houlihan, L Ní Mhuircheartaigh, H O’Donoghue; subs – L Rogers for O’Donoghue (34), A O’Connell for S Murphy (39), F Tangney for Hallissey (43), T Breen for Brosnan (55). O’Mahoney & Byrnes Are Fantasy Champs For August THE fantasy football season is up and running and, in an unusual twist, we have joint-winners of our first Manager of the Month award. Darren O’Mahoney and Laurence Byrnes finished tied first at the end of August on an impressive tally of 210 points, five clear of Shane McAllister in third and ten ahead of Noel Duggan in fourth. Duggan shot up the table with a massive 72-point haul in Gameweek 3. Darren outscored Laurence by eight points last week to draw level and he will be cursing his luck that he didn’t end up with more than he did; he had Sergio Agüero triple captain but the Argentine was dropped and only managed a single point off the bench. The result means that both managers picked up a €35 voucher for Brian James. They have also given themselves a chance of competing for the grand prize although there is still an awfully long way to go in the campaign. There are 366 players in the mix this time out so it will undoubtedly take a huge effort to come out on top. A staple of the fantasy football experience is the pun-based team name and this season has been no exception with some truly outstanding efforts on display. Unfortunately some of the entries aren’t fit for print (Paul Cahill) but a few of my favourites include: Fiorentina Turner (Conor Magill – although he loses
points for having the same name two years in a row), Chicken Tikka MoSalah (Seán McCarthy), My Little Bony (Conor O’Keeffe), Moyes in the Hood (Seán Austridge) and Vajayjay Okocha (Noel Duggan – controversial enough but I’ll allow it). It’s not too late to get involved. To join the league and compete for prizes, simply visit fantasy.premierleague.com or open the app, go to ‘join leagues’ and enter the code: 1796307430526. Updates will be shared here throughout the season. Best of luck.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE Women’s Rugby World Cup ended last Saturday evening in spectacular fashion as reigning champions England took on four-times winners New Zealand in an enthralling final at the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast. A fastpaced game saw the Kiwis win out in the end in what was an absolutely entertaining match and New Zealand were deserved winners. The Kingspan Stadium was absolutely hopping and the atmosphere was amazing to witness on the TV. A fantastic ending to a good campaign.
Tom Tierney stepped down as Ireland’s Head Coach following a truly disappointing run in the World Cup for our national side. The loss to Wales on Saturday afternoon in a seventh and eighth-place play-off meant that Tierney felt he had no choice but to step down. Ireland lost on a 27-17 score line and finished the tournament in eighth spot overall, a very disappointing finish to what should have been a much more successful tournament for the host nation. However, this tournament has captured the attention of the Irish public as well as a wider global audience. We in Killarney RFC had a busload of supporters travel to UCD for round two of the Rugby World Cup and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. Let’s hope
the tournament will bring more and more girls to play rugby. Our season is about to kick off and over the next few weeks, we will see most age groups return to action. Our Minis – boys and girls aged between 5 and 11, return to training for the new season tomorrow, Saturday the 2nd of September, as do our U14’s and our U16’s and U18’s returned to training during the week. Our seniors returned to preseason a few weeks ago so it’s all systems go in our club. On Saturday, September 9, we will hold an action packed Family Day at Aghadoe and would like to invite everyone to come along and enjoy the fun and games. A great day is guaranteed.

Muckross Rowing Club ST. MICHAEL’S MASTERS REGATTA: Well done to our Masters Men group who competed at the St. Michael’s Masters Regatta in Limerick last Saturday. Muckross was represented in the Masters and Open Eights and also in the Masters Four. Congratulations go to the crew of Paul Griffin, Jeremy Kenny, Brendan O’Neill and Maurice Coffey, who were winners of the Men’s’ Masters Four. The Masters racing handicap system meant that our Masters Eight crew were the last to start – a full 18 seconds behind the oldest crew representing Old Collegians Boat Club! While
the relative youth in the Muckross boat was able to overhaul the Old Collegians, the gap to the crews in between proved too big to close. Our second Masters Four crew was similarly stymied by a starting handicap of five seconds to finish fourth. In the Open Eight event with no timing handicap, the Muckross Eight finished second. A special word of thanks goes to Siobhan Joy who coxed on the evening. END OF SEASON: All coaches and rowers now take a well-earned break until mid-September. We will be in contact with members over the coming weeks regarding training times for the new rowing year 2017/18.
