Oskars Screening To Help Brave Louise A 22-year-old Killarney girl who is still in hospital in Spain following a serious road traffic accident will benefit from screenings of the Oskars movies, organisers have revealed. Louise Lynch, who has been teaching English in Badajoz since August, had been in a coma in intensive care for several weeks but is now said to be making steady progress. The stars of the seven films premiered in the INEC at ‘A Night at the Oskars’ by Kilcummin and Glenflesk GAA clubs got a second chance to see themselves on the big screen this week at a special showing for cast members and their families in Cinema Killarney. Tommy Cooper kindly provided the use of the screen for free and all donations taken at the door will go to the Louise Lynch Fund. Due to huge demand, the event will be repeated on Tuesday night next at 7pm and the committee hopes to raise more money to assist local girl Louise and her family in her recovery. Tickets have already sold out and donations will be taken on entry. The Oskars DVD will be launched on Friday, April 27 in the Corner Bar, Barradubh at 9pm. Copies will cost €10 each. To donate to the Louise Lynch Hospital Fund, visit www.gofundme.com/Louise-Lynch
Mayor Pulls Out Of Seanad Race
Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher has withdrawn from the upcoming Seanad Éireann by-election, instead opting to throw his full support behind fellow Fianna Fáil candidate Niall Blaney from Donegal. Fellow Killarney councillor Bobby O’Connell (Fine Gael) has also pulled
out of the running. Speaking to the Advertiser yesterday, Kelleher said it was a “fantastic honour” to be nominated by Fianna Fáil but standing aside was the right thing to do for the party. The Rathmore native will now complete his term as mayor on June 25 as scheduled.
PAGE SIX A Bit Of Understanding Goes A Long Way
There’s a lot of negativity floating about at the minute. The upcoming referendum on repealing the Eighth Amendment has been hugely contentious so far and we’re still a full month out from the vote. A whole bunch of people feel very strongly about it on both sides and, as a result, debates get very heated very quickly. I would never discourage someone from being passionate about something, especially when it comes to an issue as important as abortion, but if we really want to have a conversation, a bit of understanding could go a long way. Personally, I’m pro-choice. I think the current legislation is dangerous and equating the life of a foetus to the life of a woman is, to my mind, unreasonable. I also believe that women should have the freedom to decide what’s right for their own bodies, and it’s sad that they have to ask for our permission in the first place. A lot of you might feel as though abortion should remain illegal but, as entitled as you are to your opinion, I fundamentally disagree. I suppose that’s why we’re having a referendum. When people differ on a subject this emotive, tensions often flare and friendly chats turn argumentative in the blink of an eye. But what does that actually achieve? Maybe it might make you feel a bit better about yourself. You might leave the interaction thinking, “Jeez, I made a right fool out of that fella on Facebook,” or, “I wasn’t long quietening her,” but is your goal to convince or to ridicule? Taking the piss out of someone on the other side or denigrating their beliefs isn’t going to change their mind. If anything, slating the other campaign is more likely to fortify it than break it down.
The only way of reaching someone is by having an actual conversation with them, and to do that you have to make a genuine effort to understand where they’re coming from. Why does something that seems so inherently right to me, seem inherently wrong to someone, say, 25 years older than me? (I don’t want to generalise but the rift in this particular instance does appear to be largely generational.) I think about this quite a bit. In 25 years’ time, will a new law be proposed that we whole-heartedly oppose, but our future children insist must be passed in the name of progress? It’s a scary enough thought – especially as we’re part of a generation who consider ourselves to be very liberal and open-minded - but it’s entirely possible. And it opens your eyes to the fact that we think the way we do for a reason. We are, to a large extent, products of our environment. When it comes down to it, I feel the way I do about abortion because of factors like my upbringing, the people around me and the cultural influences I’ve been exposed to. The same is true for those on the other side of this debate. We’re basically the same. For whatever reason, we just ended up on different sides of this specific divide. When you look at it from that perspective, you can talk to someone and say, “Right, I completely understand where you’re coming from but this is where I’m coming from…” With this kind of approach, maybe you’ll be able to change a mind or two before May 25 - regardless of whether you’re voting ‘yes’ or ‘no’. And even if it doesn’t work, it’s a lot better than slagging each other off on Twitter for the next four weeks.

An artist’s impression of the proposed redevelopment of Tommy Cooper’s Cinema Killarney, which was unveiled last year.
Popular businessman Tommy Cooper, proprietor of Cinema Killarney, has thanked locals for their support following the news that a proposed second cinema has been given the green light for Killarney. Speaking exclusively to the Advertiser, Mr Cooper said plans are in place to redevelop the beloved picture house, which has been the site of a cinema for decades. “Firstly, just to say that Marla and I are deeply grateful for all the supportive comments over the past week,” he said. “We have taken on board suggestions and an application will be made based on the public’s suggestions to optimise the site to provide for a full ar-
ray of educational, entertainment and exhibition facilities in the next development of Cinema Killarney. “The current planning that has already been approved to upgrade the existing facilities will proceed at the end of the summer and we are looking forward to continuing the family’s involvement in providing the highest standard of entertainment to Killarney in the coming years.” Plans for another cinema on the site of the old Torc Great Southern Hotel on the Park Road have been greeted with opposition from the majority of locals, many of whom have questioned the need for another cinema in a town of Killarney’s size. In a poll carried out
on the Killarney Advertiser Facebook page, 65% of respondents said they didn’t think the new development was a good idea. As these Facebook comments show, a number of interesting alternatives have been suggested by our readers. What do you think? Let us know via Facebook or by emailing newsdesk@ killarneyadvertiser. Deirdre Foley: We already have a cinema! I would prefer to see a multi-purpose entertainment complex with indoor activities for kids/teens families both local and visitors with bowling lanes, pool tables, a diner and maybe an indoor play centre. We have a great tourist town but it’s lacking in suitable indoor activities for
rainy days and evenings. Mark O’Brien: Isn’t it a pity the people of Killarney weren’t surveyed before planning permission was granted? A lot of people are quite angry over this. Obviously some will welcome it but I feel the majority will feel it’s a wasted opportunity for some other venture. Chris Rogan: Why do we need another cinema? Just absolute silly there is one already. If they could fix the roads it would be better. Agnieszka Rzucidlo: A skatepark could be a good idea. Hazel Norris: We need something different like a jumpzone or indoor all-year ice rink or bowling or skateboard park or roller disco.
Microtrack Secures Crucial Grant Aid
There was some good news for the proposed Killarney Community Microtrack this past week as the committee behind the project secured LEADER grant aid that will hopefully allow the long-slated development to finally go ahead. Speaking on behalf of the committee, Jeremiah Griffin said that Mayor Niall Kelleher’s announcement had “lifted the hopes of the community group”. “In time, this project will be seen as one of the most innovative community recreational projects in the country,” he added. “The community group has been granted €110,000 having applied through the South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP). The group has raised €105,000 privately so far through a combination of fundraiser events and through private donations. With just over two thirds of the money raised so far, the project group hopes to start the construction towards the end of June.” Planning permission is in place on the perfectly located site, which is located on the grounds of St Brendan’s College and adjacent to Kerry Parents and Friends. The site was generously donated by the St Brendan’s College Trust on a leased basis. Groups involved in athletics, paralympics, special olympics as well as community groups are set to
benefit from this ground-breaking project for all. The group are hoping to raise the balance of the funds through donations to enable the project to be debt free as soon as possible. A plan is current-
ly being worked out to reach that objective. In the meantime, donations can be made directly at AIB Killarney. The voluntary group welcomes your support and ideas.

TOWNTALK Loreto Entrepreneurs Tick All The Right Boxes
A group of very clever kids at Loreto National School have shown incredible entrepreneurial spirit by coming up with a kit to treat tick bites. The idea originated when 6th class pupil Ali O’Donoghue was bitten by a tick and discovered what little information was available to treat her injury. She and her classmates researched the topic and came up with the idea of the Tick Kit, which can be used to treat bites that in some instances can cause Lyme disease. The kit, which is retailing at a very rea-
sonable €5, includes tick twisters, plasters, antiseptic wipes, a pair of rubber gloves and instructions on the inside of the lid. The project was undertaken by 5th and 6th class students under the supervision of teacher Edward Looney and principal Mary O’Sullivan as part of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme and the students hope that profits made will help fund their upcoming school tour. “Great credit is due to all the children in 5th and 6th class and their teacher Edward Looney, who have worked very
hard on this project,” said Mrs O’Sullivan. “We would like to thank David Rea, producer of Celtic Steps, who visited the children and gave them great advice about setting up a business, as well as our secretary Margaret and our parents who also gave great help and support. It has been a great learning experience for the children in how to develop a business “ 6th class pupils Ali O’Donoghue, Amy Healy and Daniel Murphy also recently made a presentation at the Muckross
Community Association public meeting on Lyme Disease. “Going forward, the product has great potential as a fundraiser for the school,” Mrs O’Sullivan added. “We hope to involve parents to further develop the Tick Kit and market it as we have received a lot of enquiries from pharmacies, hotels, outdoor shops, Killarney Tourist Office and the Tropical Medical Bureau.” For more information on the Tick Kit, please contact Scoil Bhríde Loreto on 064 66 32484.

Inspirational Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell has been included as a beneficiary of this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Ian (16), who is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Rehabilitation Centre, Dún Laoghaire, is due to return home soon where his ongoing and lengthy rehabilitation programme will continue. Money raised in the Ring of Kerry Cycle will be lodged to the Ian O’Connell Trust set up by the Spa GAA club. The fund, administered by three trustees, will help meet his ongoing needs and the cost of any necessary adaptations to his home. Jim Gleeson, who spearheaded that campaign, said they were extremely grateful to the Ring of
Kerry Cycle for making Ian a beneficiary and urged as many cyclists as possible to take part in support. ‘’The Spa club’s campaign was very generously supported,” he said. “Like so many people, the organisers of the Ring of Kerry Cycle have also been moved by Ian’s story and we’re now looking for as many fundraisers as possible to cycle on his behalf.” Before his accident Ian was working in the Killarney Park Hotel and his colleagues there are dusting off their bikes and donning their lycra to support their friend and colleague for this year’s event. Killarney Film To Air On RTÉ
The Chatroom
Junior Brother
Junior brother, or Ronan Kealy as he might be better known around these parts, popped into The Chatroom this week to talk about his upcoming gig tomorrow night upstairs in Courtney’s. Killarney native Ronan has been making music under the name Junior Brother for a few years now and as well as being played by Eoghan McDermott on his 2FM show, Junior Brother has also been included on RTÉ’s ‘Ones to Watch’ list for 2018.
Ronan tells us how his move up to the big smoke has been going and also updates us on the progress of his debut album, which is in the process of being finished at the moment. Ronan also just happened to bring along his guitar to belt out his track Castlebridge. This week’s Chatroom is on our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie and also on our Facebook page!
Killarney’s own OC Productions have announced that their debut feature film, The Gift, will screen on RTÉ 2 this Saturday night. The Gift, which was directed by Killarney man Damian O’Callaghan, stars Alan Devine (Veronica Guerin), Úna Kavanagh (Garage), Dawn Bradfield (Moone Boy) and comedian Brendan Grace in his first dramatic role. O’Callaghan also wrote the screenplay with Kildare screenwriter Paul Fitzsimons and it
was filmed in and around Killarney. The Gift tells the story of Seán, a man bereft a year after losing his wife to cancer. He has decided what he must do but life gets in the way – family who miss him, a demanding landlord, a class of uncontrollable students. And, with his own imagination working overtime, deciding to end his own life is his latest frustration. The Gift will screen this Saturday night, April 21, just after midnight (technically Sunday morning).
In Memoriam
Music Lovers Saddened A Gentle Giant By Death Of Big Tom The Irish music community united in grief this past week following the death of legendary Irish country music star Big Tom McBride. He was 81. McBride became a household name in Ireland in the 60s and 70s as he filled ballrooms the length and breadth of the country with his band the Mainliners. The Monaghan native was so successful he became known as The King of Ireland’s thriving music scene. His career spanned more than five decades, culminating in his induction into the Irish Country Music Awards Hall of Fame in June 2016. President Michael D. Higgins led the tributes to the talented musician. “As one of the most charismatic and influential artists in Irish country music, Big Tom was widely respected and through his five decades of music-making he leaves a lasting legacy,” he said. “His name will be recalled with fond memo-
ry by those who listened and danced to his and his band members’ generous nights of entertainment all over the island of Ireland. A big personality and one of the country’s greatest country stars, his love of music and his passion and skill have enriched Ireland’s music scene.” Local music lovers also expressed their sadness. Mike Coffey of The Two Mikes said Big Tom was a “legend” of the Irish country music scene. “He was Ireland’s Elvis,” he added. “One of my favourite songs of his was the classic Four Country Roads.” Popular Killarney country and Irish singer Dermot Moriarty, who has been on Radio Kerry for 28 years, said Big Tom “will never be replaced”. “He was an easy person to talk to and he gave people time. He would spend hours after a gig talking to everyone. He did all the right things because he was a normal, gentle human being.”
I was so sad when I heard the news that Big Tom passed away, he was an absolute dote and a legend in the country music industry. He was a lovely, humble man, a gentle giant and a really great character. He loved performing here in the Gleneagle hotel over the years. Big Tom & The Mainliners last performed to a sold out show in INEC Killarney on July 29 last year. His late wife Rose always travelled with him and she looked after him so well. I remember the last time he performed here during the sound check he was sitting on a high stool with an iPad watching a Roscommon football club final. He loved his football and, on this day, he loved it even more than his sound check. I once asked him backstage, “Did you open the Galtymore in London?” “No,” he replied, “I closed it!”
I recently just heard that Nathan Carter actually supported him that night. I absolutely adored him and my heart goes out to all of the McBride family, The Mainliners and his manager Kevin McCooey. I will be travelling to his funeral in Castleblayney to pay my respects. I know the Late Late Show are doing a Country Music Special this Friday night in his honour and I will be tuning in to celebrate the memory of the King of Country Music and my lovely friend Big Tom. I would like to thank him for all the great songs and for the thousands of people he brought with him to The Gleneagle and INEC over the years. He will be forever in our memories. RIP Big Tom Fiona O’Connor INEC Entertainment Manager

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and be yond
Kerry Launch In Brussels
Glenflesk Flooding. Inset: Moira Murrell RIght: Sean Kelly MEP
I was intrigued recently to see our MEP Seán Kelly publishing a picture of himself in astronaut gear, as part of promoting his efforts in cyber security for Europe during a visit to the US. As I remarked on a social platform, I wish him well in space, and in his efforts to protect our data, but I would be far more impressed were he to manage to draw together the NPWS and the roads department of Kerry County Council to put up a deer fence or some such barrier along the National Park, including across the road from himself in Fossa. And now I find we have no fewer than 12 people from Kerry County Council between councillors and management heading for Brussels on a council all-expenses-paid trip to argue the case for Kerry. Ahem. There was a robust defence from our county manager and local Rock Road woman Moira Murrell (and we are all very proud of Moira, whose mother Mary was herself a council official). Moira studied and worked in Brussels. She was, in fact European officer, for Kerry County Council, so she will have plenty of contacts in Europe. “Kerry County Council has made a very strong state-
ment on behalf of this county… for European funding,” Moira told Jerry O’Sullivan on Radio Kerry. The visit would put “the spotlight” for two days on this part of the world, she added. Brexit will also be on the agenda. It is to be assumed cyber space and data protection will be discussed too. Now, while I encourage travel, going to Brussels in such numbers and at such public cost with such high hopes, before fixing basic things like flooding in Glenflesk, providing pedestrian crossings on Mission Road and Beech Road and Lewis Road and the new entrance at Muckross, sticks in my craw. The numbers involved… Three very well paid senior council officials and no fewer than nine councillors will be flying out for two days. No costing was available at time of going to press, but I doubt if any hotel in Brussels will charge less than €100 a night per delegate, even if they are from Kerry. If our council and their officials cannot persuade roads and other authorities in their own backyard to drain the river at Glenflesk, to draw lines on the road at Monsignor O’Flaherty monument so people can cross the road safely, to fix the potholes in Killarney
town centre, and to put up fencing in partnership with the NPWS along the Killarney National Park at Ballydowney and Muckross, then what hope have we persuading the European authorities to take us seriously? What hope have politicians and the local authority of persuading the public in Kerry they are effective? That they actually matter at all? But, as I have said before, it is easier to talk in abstraction. It was always easier to do the honours paper in the Leaving Certificate than the pass paper because you could waffle for Ireland in the honours, but you had to tackle the boring detail, the nuts and bolts and Ps and Qs, in pass papers, and it may well be easier to get elected to the European Parliament than to Kerry County Council! Those on the delegation from Kerry County Council “to engage with Ireland South MEPs and EU officials on matters of interest to Kerry” include just one Killarney area councillor, the mayor. The delegation will include three Fine Gael councillors (Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen, Cllr Pat McCarthy and Cllr Jim Finucane), five Fianna Fáil councillors (Mayor of Killarney Cllr Niall Kelleher, Cllr John Lucid, Cllr Tom McEllistrim, Cllr Norma Moriarty and Cllr Michael O’Shea) and Labour’s Cllr Graham Spring. Since Killarney pays more rates than any other town, it should have more Killarney names. The officials include Ms Moira Murrell (Chief Executive), Mr Martin O’Donoghue (Director of Services for Housing and Corporate Services) and Mr Michael Scannell (Director of Services for Economic and Community Development).
Niall O’Callaghan To Run For New Town Council? Staying local and acting global: the local elections and the likely partial return of town councils is just a year away. I am already speculating about the new five-member Killarney council and who may run for the town. We can expect, I am reliably informed, the re-entrance of Niall O’Callaghan. The popular Kerry GAA Store manager spent a decade on the town council, was elected mayor in 2007, and was an impressive and mature performer by the time the council was demolished. It was Niall who put Killarney House on the public agenda and built it to a national story. It became his
number one priority as mayor in 2007. I believe he is singularly responsible for shining the light on the dilapidated state of Killarney House and while Fine Gael may have run with the project, and look credit for it, it was the independent Niall who relentlessly pursued it on the agenda of the town council. The town and the town alone has always interested Niall, born and bred in College Street. He had little interest in the new rather regional body which not only replaced the town council but diluted its powers and the focus on what is an international tourism destination. Now that the focus on Killarney is back, so is Niall, I
am told. Who else may put a name in the Killarney hat? A local woman? Anytime I brought this up, the name of Kate O’Leary was mentioned. Kate, who is also from the heart of Killarney, was a huge success as president of the chamber of commerce and tourism, taking up the slack for the town during the transition period after the town council became no more. But Kate, who is busy with family and business and who is decisive and likes the business forum that is the chamber, may not be as interested in running for politics as the town is keen to see her do so. And this is a great pity. The search is on for worthy females!

Time To Put The Spotlight On Innisfallen Now back to deer. Wicklow deer farmers are up in arms about being eaten out of house and home by deer. Now, we might have very different opinions on the referendum, but I have to take my hat off to Cllr John Joe Culloty, a member of the park liaison committee, for speaking out about the atrocious situation on Innisfallen with deer starving to death. This was known about in other circles - and if not it was widely Visit: Minister Madigan anticipated - but no one spoke out! An invitation from him by way of council motion last Monday to Minister Josepha Madigan to come and see the state of the National Park for herself has had a response already. Minister Madigan, elevated to office by Leo in November, has not managed to come down to Killarney yet. She is the minister with responsibility for the NPWS and part of her department is in the plush offices in New Road. Cllr Culloty asked her to see the difficult but not insurmountable problems in the park – a call seconded by Cllr Michael Gleeson. Mr Culloty said the Park urgently needs greater funding to help with the current shortage of staff. There are just four wildlife rangers now for the ten thousand hectares of lake, mountain and woodland and maintenance personnel have also been greatly reduced. Calling on the minister to see for herself the deterioration of much of the Park, Mr Culloty said the value of the Park to Killarney and to the country was huge and Killarney tourism, which was worth €410 million, depended on it. “What’s going on is unbelievable,” he said. “There is a huge issue here. It’s vitally important that the minister comes down to see for herself.” It transpires now that the minister is concerned about the deer on the island associated with Brian Ború. This is what her spokeswoman told me on Tuesday: “The Minister is currently finalising her diary engagements for the coming period. She is in touch with all current issues. She looks forward to visiting in person as her diary permits in the coming period. In the meantime, she has asked her senior heritage official to visit the Park and report back to her directly on the deer situation.” Meanwhile, why has Innisfallen slipped down the ranks of attention? Maybe the dire state of the much-visited island can be taken up by our other minister, Brendan Griffin? Maybe instead of focusing so much on Dingle, and its heritage, and its roads, he can turn his attention to Killarney heritage? Innisfallen is of huge cultural value. At a time when tourists are more interested in cultural tourism, it deserves attention. Local councillors can achieve much if they put their minds to it and relentlessly pursue matters. We have two examples in this column this week. I know Cllr Donal Grady has several times called for the return of the Annals of Innisfallen. Perhaps that campaign can be revived?

39th Rally Of The Lakes Officially Launched Johnny Hickey, Richie Lahiff (Cartell. ie), Lisa Foley (Rally Events Secretary) and Mike Moriarty. Standing from left are Paul O’Neill (Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President), Cormac Casey (KC Print), Cllr Niall Kelleher (Mayor of Killarney), Kieran Healy (Killarney Advertiser), Dermot Healy (Clerk of the Course), Martin Farrell (Assistant CoC), Brian McArdle, (OSI), Diarmuid Cronin (Killarney and District Motor Club Chairman), Patrick O’Donoghue (Gleneagle Hotel), Mike Marshall (Deputy CoC) and Frank O ‘Mahony (Tarmac Rally Organisers Association Chairman). Killarney and District Motor Club held the official launch to the Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes 2018 last Sunday at the Brehon Hotel. There were some beautiful rally cars on display and a large crowd in attendance. Officials, organisers, sponsors, distinguished guest speakers such as TD brothers Michael and Danny Healy Rae, Councillor Michael Gleeson, WRC co-driver Paul Nagle and dignitaries of Killarney town were on hand to support the event. The MC on the night was non-other than Mike Marshall, event COC of 25 years, and he introduced Paul O’Neill of Killarney’s Chamber of Tourism and Commerce who spoke of how important the Rally of the Lakes is to Killarney Town, bringing a welcomed boost to the local economy. The Mayor of Killarney, Niall Kelleher, also spoke on the commitment and dedication of the voluntary club members involved and their ability to host an event of this magnitude every year. Other guest speakers included John Byrne of Cartell.ie, Brian McArdle of Ordnance Survey Ireland, Kieran Healy of KC Print/ Killarney Advertiser and Patrick O’Donoghue of the Gleneagle Hotel Group who have been involved since the rally’s first inception in 1979. Killarney & District Motor Club, organisers of the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes, have announced details of this year’s event which will take place over the May Bank Holiday weekend, May 4-6. The 39th Rally of the Lakes will be counting rounds of the: • Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. • PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship • Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship. Killarney businessman Dermot Healy has taken on the role of COC for his sixth year. Dermot, who is very much respected in the town of Killarney for his incredible voluntary and charity work, has put together a strong organising committee and operations are well under way. Heading the international entry list is last year’s winner, Sam Moffett, who is likely to start the
event in the top slot. Local co-driver Noel O’Sullivan takes up the hot seat alongside Sam for the first time and will be hopeful for his first overall win. Behind him comes a host of WRC machinery with two times Lakes winner Donagh Kelly, along with Roy White and Declan Boyle who have led this event in the past. Donegal man Manus Kelly has shown interest in this year’s event and he will be a great addition to the line up. Irish Tarmac Championship leader Josh Moffett arrives in Killarney on top form with recent back to back wins on both the West Cork and Easter Stages rallies. Other Top R5 competitors include Robert Barrable, who was second overall last year, five-time Irish Tarmac champion Eugene Donnelly in his Hyundai I20 R5, Stephen Wright and Jonny Greer, both in their Ford Fiestas, along with Desi Henry in his new Skoda Fabia R5. Top Local crew Daniel Cronin/Shane Buckley have had a great start to their Irish Tarmac Championship campaign having recently acquired the ultimate Ford Fiesta from M-Sport and he will be anxious to make his mark on the home event. The field will also include Killarney regulars Joe Connolly and Keith Lyons amongst the R5 cars. In the National Rally, all the big Escort brigade come out to play but perhaps the person who will cause them most bother is from Donegal, as last year’s Modified winner Kevin Eves returns in his Toyota Corolla 2.5. He has put in such an incredible drive and category win on both the West Cork and Easter Stages rallies to lead the championship heading for Killarney. Local man Rob Duggan, fresh from a
win in the Killarney Historic Rally in December, has hired an ultimate 2.5 Escort and will be hard to beat over the classic stages. Barry Meade is a previous Modified winner and will be incredibly quick also. Past winner Wesley Patterson will be a strong contender, as will the legendary Phil Collins who makes the trip from Herefordshire to the stages he loves so well and where he has enjoyed considerable success over the past 32 years. Other top entries include Vincent McSweeney, Jack Newman, Gary Kiernan, Liam Howlett, John O’Donnell, Enda O’Brien and Eugene Megan. The battle for the John Mullane Cup for the highest placed driver from Co. Kerry will be as closely contested as it has been since the award was first introduced in the very early days of the Rally of the Lakes. Top crews include Charlie Hickey, Kevin O’Donoghue, Denis Hickey, Tadgh O’Sullivan, Fergus O’Meara, John Hickey, Ed Murphy, Con Lucey, Noel O’Sullivan and Vincent O’Shea. A strong Historic & Junior Entry has already been received. The Historics will contest the whole event, while the juniors will contest the rally on Saturday. The May Bank Holiday weekend is near and the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes is the place to be. Are you ready? Inset left: Dermot Healy (Clerk of the Course), Patrick O’Donoghue (Gleneagle Hotel), John Byrne (Cartell.ie) and Kieran Healy (Killarney Advertiser). Right: Mikey Galvin, Robert Duggan, Paul Nagle (WRC co-driver) and Noel O’Sullivan.

After a 26-year hiatus, the Kerry Division of an Garda Síochána gathered for a gala ball in the Killarney Oaks Hotel on Friday last. Occasions like this were a regular occurrence in years gone but the tradition seemed to be lost until Chief Supt Tom Myers decided to re-introduce a modernised version of the event. As our pictures show, the style and glamour on show was outstanding. Organisers praised Eamon and Valerie Courtney and their staff at the Killarney Oaks for their impeccable service. Attendees were treated to a champagne reception and canapés before sitting down to a five-course gala dinner and wine. Entertainment was provided by local band Truly Diverse followed by DJ who together filled the dance floor all night long.
Along with serving garda members, the Mayors of Kerry and Killarney, Assistant Commissioners Ann Marie McMahon and Michael O Sullivan, county councillors, the local business community and agencies that interact with serving gardaí on a regular basis were all in attendance. “We received great support from local businesses many donating spot prizes for the night,” a garda spokesperson said. “Many of these businesses attended on the night also and the feedback from them in relation to the night has been outstanding. “On behalf of the Kerry Garda Division Black Tie Ball, we wish to thank the Killarney Oaks Hotel, our band Truly Diverse, the businesses who donated spot prizes and to everyone who attended the event.”

Harry Kernoff 1900-1974 Irish born artist spent the vast majority of his life unappreciated, and made little or nothing from his paintings until a few years before his death, when he began to be appreciated by contemporary critics. Mainly working with water colours he favoured capturing Irish street scenes and characters. Notably his paintings of Killarney brought him International fame. Did you know: Harry never painted on the spot, he had a quick ‘on the spot’ style of sketching and a bespoke referencing method ‘basically colouring by numbers’ at a later stage. Make The Best Of Spring Open Days At this time of the year many colleges hold a Spring Open Day which offers Leaving Cert students a second chance to visit the campus and offers transition and 5th year students an ideal opportunity to kickstart their visits to colleges that may be of interest. Spring Open Days tend to be less busy than the main Open Days in Autumn which means that students can gain more from the experience by doing a campus tour, attending talks and workshop and meeting with current students and college staff. Leaving Cert is a busy year for students and it is never too early to start researching college courses. The following pointers will help that research. • Look up the dates of Spring Open Days on www.qualifax.ie/events/ opendays • Look up the college website before the visit and make a note of particular. courses you are interested in. Make note of key information you want to get or questions you want to ask. • Plan the day in advance by downloading the schedule of talks and workshops and a map of the campus
from the college website. Make note of the specific talks that you want to attend. • Get there early so that you can make the most of the day. • Speak to as many people as you can in the areas that interest you. If possible try to talk to students and staff. Ask them the relevant questions. • Gather whatever literature you need and when you return home make note of the key details that are important for you in trying to make decisions at a later date. Spring Open Day takes place in IT Tralee on Saturday, April 21 from 11am–2pm with taster workshops, course talks, campus tours and information for parents. See www.ittralee.ie for details. Spring Open Days take place in UCC on May 16/17. Niamh Dwyer is a guidance counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and is PRO of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. Congratulations to intrepid Killarney men Kevin Leahy of the Black Sheep Hostel and Blaine Lyne who recently took part in the Tom Crean Ultra Marathon - and raised a whopping €11,000 for Down Syndrome Ireland in the process. The Tom Crean Ultra was held on March 10 to commemorate the first Irish ultra marathoner, Tom Crean (1877-1938) from Annascaul. On several expeditions to the Antarctic, Tom trekked across that inhospitable terrain to save the lives of his compatriots. No lives were at stake on this
particular adventure (despite there being quite a lot of snow on the Dingle hills) but some crucial funds were raised for the Kerry branch of Down Syndrome Ireland. Over a dozen brave and hardy men started out running from Dingle, over Brandon Mountain, on to part of The Dingle Way and then over Maghanabo, down to Lough Annascaul and finishing in The South Pole Inn some 48km later. Organisers were full of praise for all of the participants, especially Kevin and Blaine who went above and beyond in their remarkable fundraising efforts.

PURCHASING A HOUSE
When you find a house you wish to buy and the Vendor has accepted your offer through an Auctioneer, you will be required to lodge an initial booking deposit with that Auctioneer which is refundable up and until the time the Contracts are signed. After that, the Auctioneer will issue a Sales Advice Note to the Solicitor for the Vendor and Purchaser. Contracts will then be exchanged between the party’s Solicitors and the Purchaser’s Solicitor will investigate title and recommend a property survey by a Surveyor/ Engineer or Architect to confirm that the boundaries on the ground match that which is being sold and confirm the position with boundaries and services and investigate matters of title. The Purchaser’s Solicitor may raise pre-contract enquiries and once all of those issues are dealt with, Contracts can then be signed by the Purchasers. At that time the balance of the 10% deposit is discharged. When the Contracts are signed by the Vendors and exchanged between the parties, at that stage usually a contractual binding relationship exists. In the event that you are securing a mortgage to purchase the property it is vital that you have a letter of loan offer in place prior to signing
Contracts. Usually, it is approximately four weeks (but can be longer) for the sale to complete. When the balance of funds are payable at the closing of the transaction, at that point the Purchaser Solicitors will carry out closing searches, monies will be handed over and thereafter the Deed will be stamped by the Revenue Commissioners with the stamp duty (usually 1% of the purchase price) and register with the Land Registry. Once finalised with the Land Registry, title deeds are returned and, in the event, that a mortgage was raised, the title deeds go back to the lending institution where they will remain for the duration of your loan. Your Solicitor will be on hand to advise and assist throughout all stages of this important transaction.

Beyoncé Pulled Out All The Stops For Her Epic Headlining Coachella Performance
Jessie J Wins China’s ‘X Factor Equivalent’ She judged hopeful singers on The Voice UK and Australia for four seasons and has had several big hits of her own. But Jessie J, 30, decided that it was her turn to take part in a singing contest, as she joined Chinese show Singer, the country’s X Factor equivalent as a competitor in early January. The Domino songstress won the competition and gained a whole host of new fans in the process as the final had around one billion viewers.

Beyoncé pulled out all the stops for her epic headlining Coachella performance this weekend — from a surprise Destiny’s Child reunion to bringing husband Jay Z on stage. Queen Bey perfected her performance from head-to-toe and made sure to take her outfit changes extra seriously. And she showed just how committed she was to every aspect of her look by switching up her
nail pol- ish in between sets. Somehow in the matter of only a few minutes, the singer, 36, managed to find enough time while changing into one of her five Balmain outfits to revamp her manicure shade to match the ensemble. One savvy Twitter fan pointed out Bey’s quick change and wondered how it was possible for the star to get a fresh manicure so quickly during the show.
The 2018 Academy of Country Music Awards kicked off at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas on Sunday night in a show airing live in CBS. Carrie Underwood topped the bill with her first scheduled performance since suffering a facial injury requiring 50 stitches. She took to the stage in a glittery silver mini dress and matching heels to perform her new song Cry Pretty. Later, backstage, after changing outfits, she posed for photos with her trophy revealing her full face with no indication of any injury showing. Miranda Lambert won the first award of the night at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas Sunday night, taking home Song Of The Year for Tin Man.

6,000 Take Part In KWD County Clean-Up Kerry is significantly cleaner this week after almost 6,000 volunteers took part in the KWD County CleanUp on Saturday. Thousands of bags of litter were collected from the roadsides and towns and villages during the seventh annual cleanup, which was organised by KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council with the support of many agencies and voluntary groups. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Sheahan, was among those who dusted off their gloves, hi-vis vests and litter-pickers and he said the community effort involved was inspirational. “This was a record turnout for the County Clean-Up and shows how civic-minded many of our citizens are when it comes to keeping the county neat and tidy,” he said. “We had reasonably good weather which was a big help and from early morning, peo-
ple of all ages rolled up their sleeves and got involved. It would be great to harness the involvement of members of the public on Saturday by getting more people to sign up with their local Tidy Towns group or start a group in their own area and to get people out and about collecting litter more often.’ Cllr Sheahan thanked KWD Recycling and their team for helping to distribute gloves and bags ahead of the Clean-Up and for arranging to dispose of the bags of rubbish collected. He also thanked the GAA, the IFA and the ICMSA in Kerry each of which mobilised their members to get involved on the day. Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling said they were delighted with the turnout and the can-do attitude of all the participants. He also thanked and congratulated local volunteer groups for their involvement.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
North Korea Wants “Complete Denuclearisation” North Korea has expressed a desire for the “complete denuclearisation” of the Korean peninsula without attaching preconditions such as the withdrawal of US troops, the South Korean president has said. The statement, unconfirmed by North Korea, comes before a summit between the leaders of the two countries on 27 April, to be followed in May or June by a meeting between Kim Jongun, the North Korean leader, and Donald Trump. The US president on Wednesday pledged to meet Kim “in the coming weeks” but said he was prepared to
walk away if the talks were not fruitful. The key question at any summit between Trump and Kim is whether the North Korean leader is serious about dismantling his regime’s nuclear weapons, and what he would demand from the US in return. The South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, told reporters that North Korea had not “attached any conditions that the US cannot accept, such as the withdrawal of American troops from South Korea. All they are expressing is the end of hostile policies against North Korea, followed by a guarantee of security.”
Sex Education Bill Proceeds Despite FF Opposition A bill that would prevent schools from using their religious ethos to avoid giving factual sex education to students progressed to the next stage in the Dáil today despite planned opposition from Fianna Fáil. Some had expressed fear for the future of the bill after Fianna Fáil’s education spokesperson, Thomas Byrne, said the party would vote against the bill on
the basis that the party supports many of its ideas but does not want the new curriculum put into law. But fewer than 10 TDs claimed a formal division today, meaning that the bill could progress to the next stage – the Education and Skills Committee. Members of Solidarity People Before Profit, the party that introduced the bill, have welcomed the development,
claiming that efforts to encourage people to contact their TDs in support of the bill had worked. The Provision of Objective Sex Education Bill guarantees the rights of students to receive factual and objective information on relationships and sexuality regardless of the school’s ethos, and contains provisions for education on consent, different types of sexuality and gen-

der, the termination of pregnancy and different contraception methods. Introducing the bill yesterday, Solidarity TD Paul Murphy said that “sex education in Ireland is in the dark ages”. He said that students were entitled to a fact-based education regardless of the school’s ethos. The current model, he said, is failing young people and wider society.
Swaziland King Changes Country’s Name
Ex-Playboy Model Free To Discuss Trump Affair Former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal has settled with American Media Inc (AMI), freeing her to discuss her alleged affair with Donald Trump. Ms McDougal had signed a $150,000 deal with AMI tabloid The National Enquirer which gave them exclusive story rights. She filed a lawsuit in California last month to be released from the socalled “catch and kill” deal. Ms McDougal says she had a 10-month affair with Mr Trump starting shortly after the birth of his son Barron. She previously apologised to First Lady Melania Trump about the relationship in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper. The president has denied any affair. The former model’s lawyer, Peter Stris, reportedly described the settlement in an interview as a “total win”.
Never fails to entertain
“We got everything we were fighting for,” he said. “She got out of the contract, gets the life rights back and owes AMI nothing more.” Under the terms of the settlement, Ms McDougal can keep the $150,000 she originally received, and has full rights to her own story. However, if she sells or licenses the story to another party within the next year, AMI is entitled to up to $75,000 of any profit she receives. Ms McDougal claims she was misled into signing the deal in August 2016, months before the election of President Trump. She claims at the time she thought the contract was a work agreement, and did not realise it would penalise her for speaking to other media. Moreover, the former model told CNN that her lawyer for the AMI deal, Keith Davison, was allegedly in contact with Mr Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen.
The king of Swaziland, Africa’s last absolute monarchy, has announced that his country has changed its name to the Kingdom of eSwatini to mark 50 years since independence from British rule. Meaning “place of the Swazi”, eSwatini is the Swazi language name for the tiny state landlocked between South Africa and Mozambique. Unlike some countries, Swaziland did not change its name when it gained independence in 1968 after being a British protectorate for more than 60 years. King Mswati III declared the
name change during independence day celebrations at a packed sports stadium in the second city of Manzini. “I would like to announce that Swaziland will now revert to its original name,” he said, wearing red military uniform. “African countries on getting independence reverted to their ancient names before they were colonised. So from now on, the country will be officially be known as the Kingdom of eSwatini.” The name Swaziland angers some citizens as it is a mix of Swazi and English.

Killarney Insurance Firm Save Meath Motorist €17k
A Meath man has hailed Killarney insurance brokers Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan for coming to his aid when his previous insurers quoted him €19,000 for his renewal. Brian Kelly, a Slane publican who is also the director of the suicide awareness voluntary group SOSAD (Save Our Sons and Daughters), was left flabbergasted when Liberty quoted him €19,368.26 to cover his Toyota Avensis for 12 months. The increase was up over €15,000 on last year’s insurance costs and over €18,500 more than his 2016 insurance policy of €800. Brian says he was told by Liberty Insurance that the premium had risen because of two outstanding
claims against him. Speaking at the time, he said: “I’m in shock. Sure who could afford to pay €19,000 for car insurance? You’d buy a new car for that.” Brian was effectively being forced off the road but Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan, which trades as GMHD.ie, reached out and offered to insure him for €1,862. The offer was one of a number of quotes from insurance companies all over Ireland who tendered quotes of less than €4,000. Bizarrely Brian says that Liberty also contacted him with a revisited quote of €6,000 - but only if he signed a contract to never speak to the media or radio about it again.
911 Operator Jailed For Hanging Up On Callers A former 911 operator in Houston, Texas has been found guilty of hanging up on emergency calls. Crenshanda Williams (44) was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 18 months of probation for interfering with emergency telephone calls. The Harris County district attorney’s office said Ms Williams systematically hung up on emergency reports. Calls she terminated included reports of robberies, speeding vehicles, and murders, records showed. Prosecutors said Ms Williams had worked as a 911 operator for 18 months, ending in 2016. St Brendan’s National School in Blennerville has introduced a sweeping ban on mobile phones and social media apps outside school hours, with the full support of parents. The 11-week pilot programme was initiated the after issues were raised over messaging groups that children in 6th class were accessing. Inappropriate comments and content on Snapchat and Instagram groups were being circulated between pupils aged 11 and 12 and the children were involved in groups where teenagers were also participating. Principal Terry O’Sullivan said parents and teachers were very surprised with what was going on. St Brendan’s is a digital school, he said, and uses iPads as educational tools but all technology is used un-
der supervision. At a meeting of staff, parents and the board of management last week it was agreed that the use of phones and social media apps would be banned outside school hours. There was already a ban on phones during school hours. “We are not anti-iPads. You have to embrace the digital era. We use iPads here in school ... but they must be monitored, they must be supervised,” Mr O’Sullivan said. He said parents have told him that they have noticed an improvement in their children’s moods and behaviour since the out-of-hours technology ban was introduced, with children being more active and playing board games and getting involved with other social activities.
TV Star Dale Winton Dies Aged 62 Dale Winton’s death at his home in London is being treated as “unexplained” by police, Scotland Yard said. Officers are making inquiries after the Supermarket Sweep star passed away aged 62 on Wednesday. A spokesman told the Standard police do not currently believe the death to be suspicious but they are gathering information to pass to the coroner. Tributes have poured in for the TV favourite after his longterm agent confirmed the tragedy in a statement.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm the passing of Dale Winton who died at home earlier today,” said Jan Kennedy, Winton’s long-time agent.”While we know many will share this terrible loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this time of grief. As well as the hugely popular Supermarket Sweep, Winton was known for shows Family Fortunes and In It To Win It as well as Channel 5’s Dale Winton’s Florida Fly Drive.

An Indian man who disappeared 40 years ago has been reunited with his family after his brother recognised him in a YouTube video that went viral. Khomdram Gambhir Singh went missing from Manipur state aged 26 in 1978. His family heard nothing for decades. Then they saw a video of him singing a Hindi song for money on a Mumbai street, 3,300km away. Police helped trace Mr Singh, a former sol-
dier who is now 66. He was flown back to live in Manipur on Thursday. “I could not believe my eyes when one of my nephews showed me the video footage. We had lost all hope of seeing him alive again,” Mr Singh’s brother, Khomdram Kulachandra, told The Hindu newspaper. Police in Manipur traced Mr Singh to Mumbai where he had been living rough.

Review: Cardi B - Invasion Of Privacy Cardi B had a pair of reasons to celebrate on Saturday Night Live as the rapper, whose just-released debut album Invasion of Privacy is bound for Number One, also revealed on air that she is pregnant. She’s kept ‘Invasion Of Privacy’ hiphop. It’s filled with taut, trap-influenced midtempo beats over which Cardi celebrates the trappings of her hard-earned lifestyle and gen-
erally asserts her superiority. There are more melodic moments, such as ‘I Like It’, whose sample from ’60s boogaloo hit ‘I Like It Like That’ salutes her Latin heritage, and ‘Ring’, a dreamy collaboration with Kehlani. But mostly this album succeeds on attrition and attitude, much like ‘Bodak Yellow’ did. This is a remarkably confident and compelling debut from a superstar who’s put in the graft.

Start Planning Early This will help avoid disappointment and to help secure better airfare and room allocations. At Torc Travel, we know which times of the year are the busiest for each location. We can help make sure that your dream honeymoon is being planned with sufficient time to ensure you get the best experience! It also ticks a box so you can concentrate on other wedding plans.
Set a Budget Ahead of Time As the wedding planning progresses and gets more and more costly it is very tempting to take from your honeymoon budget to put towards something else. But think about it, your honeymoon is going to be the first trip that you will take as a married couple and after all of the wedding planning you are not only going to want but deserve a dream honeymoon! We can help to show you what options are available for your budget and how to get the best value for it.
Work Together While dividing and conquering might come in handy for certain aspects of planning your wedding but honeymoon planning should be a joint effort in order to ensure both of your desires are met. You might like the idea of relaxing on a beach for 10 days but your spouse-to-be might have other plans. Make sure you both get a clear idea of what you want to take away from your honeymoon.
Be Specific About Your Wants It’s easy to say you want an “exotic destination” but everyone’s definition is different. Make sure you both are on the same page about what type of honeymoon you envision yourselves going on. We can help you narrow down your options to find the perfect fit for you!
Make Your Honeymoon Uniquely Yours We get it, wedding planning can be stressful! You hear your friends talk about what a great time they had on their honeymoon, it’s very tempting to simply copy and paste theirs. It’s okay to get advice from friends and family, but keep in mind this is your big-trip. At Torc Travel, we will take the stress out of the planning and still ensure that this is uniquely tailored to you.

Beauty Buzz Top Tips For A Perfect Tan 1. Find the right tanning formula
Not all tanning products are created equal. Unfortunately, the only way to really find “the one” is by research, reviews, and trial and error. Do a little online digging and see what others think — keeping color payoff, scent and price in mind. Once you find one that doesn’t stink (ugh, the dreaded tan smell!) or come out orange, you’re in luck! Need a little help?
2. Use a water-based moisturizer before
Have you ever noticed how certain areas get darker than others? Self-tanner saturates dry areas like knees and elbows — which is why you need to moisturize your body beforehand for a consistent tan. It’s important that you stick to a water-based or aloe vera–based moisturizer ONLY, since creams with oils will act as a barrier to your skin and cause the self-tanner to streak. Make sure you let the moisturizer completely absorb into your skin before applying any tanning agents!
3. Exfoliate and shave the morning of
To ensure an even tan, shower, exfoliate and shave before you tan. This rule goes for professional spray tans also! Exfoliating and shaving will both remove dry, dead skin cells that can cause your tan to come out patchy. Doing this afterwards will only break down your tan and leave your skin lookin’ like a streaky mess.
4. Remove any traces of deodorant, makeup or perfume
Again, these products act as a barrier to your faux-tan and can even cause mild irritation, so be sure to remove them before you get your glow on.
5. Apply the product in a dry, cool environment
You just got out of the shower and you’re in the bathroom naked anyway, so you think now would be the perfect time to apply your tanning solution. Wrong. The heat and steam in the room will prevent your skin from adequately drying, which is a big no-no when applying self-tanner.
6. The best time to apply tanning solution is before bed
Because you can just apply it, let it dry within a few minutes and hit the hay. There’s no worrying about any factors or rules, plus it takes about eight hours for the tan to fully develop, so you can just wake up and head out with your tan self!
7. Use a tanning mitt or disposable gloves Two words — orange palms. That is all.
8. Start from your ankles and work your way up
Start just above your feet and work your way up your legs to avoid missing any spots. Starting from top to bottom could cause patchiness and streaks when you bend over to apply product to your legs.
9. Use smooth upward and downward motions. No rubbing!
Long, even strokes — that’s the key to a natural-looking tan! Aggressively rubbing the product into your skin won’t make it work better, but it will leave you with an uneven tan.
10. Add a little leftover color to the tops of your feet and hands
For a natural look, wipe whatever is left from your application mitt or glove on the tops of your hands and feet (not in between fingers and toes). Orange fingers and toes won’t fool anyone!

Garden Magic Giving Your Garden A Purpose Many of us are unhappy with what our gardens look like. I don’t mean the wintery bareness of it, but rather the general layout of it. Often we move into our home and our home, understandably, takes priority. So a lawn is sown, a drive and parking area are created and possibly a small patio with a clothes line is added a short while later… Over the next number of years, small beds or borders are cleared and planted, usually in response to a gift of a plant, or because we want a bit of colour amidst all that green. What tends to happen is that the garden becomes incohesive and lacks unity. Does that sound familiar? If so, there are a few ways to rectify the situation without breaking the bank or getting the landscapers in! What your garden needs is something which links one area to another, a purpose, and a focal point. A focal point can be anything from a sculpture, gazebo, rockery or water feature. Anything which will justify a walk! Now, link your disparate beds and borders. A path can meander through any part of your garden. Rectangular paving slabs can be laid in a clear and uniform manner, or stepping stones can be more haphazard and relaxed. When laying slabs in your grassed areas, make sure they are below the blades of the lawnmower. Gravel paths with edging can also be an option, but can make for more work as gravel can stray into your lawn and
weeds can become a problem. To keep it interesting and to create movement in the garden, make sure paths curve around beds. If necessary, plant a few trees along the way or edge one side with a hedge or tall grasses. Try to create little bit of mystery! If you prefer the open plan approach, try edging with alchemilla (ladies mantle) or catmint to prevent the path looking very contrived. Your path should look like it has always been there, and the planting was done around it, rather than the other way around! Paths are not the only way to link areas. Planting large swathes of heather, geraniums or carpet roses to join existing beds can also be very effective. Plants need not be the only items of interest. Link one part of the garden to another by using clusters of colourful pots, an obelisk or a birdhouse. Sheds and other garden practicalities can become features by dressing them up with a bit of colourful paint or outdoor art. Mirrors can also be used to create interest. The secret is to repeat features, shapes and colours throughout the garden. For example, if you paint your garden shed or trellis purple, repeat that colour by planting lavender, verbena or butterfly bushes. If you have small mirrors around your patio, try placing a few at unexpected points in the main garden. The possibilities are endless and I hope I have given you a few ideas to try!

Flat-Pack OX Truck Confirmed Remember the OX? It’s the slab-sided, flat-pack truck from the designer of five World Championship-winning F1 cars (and the McLaren F1) that might just save the world. In short, the OX is the brainchild of philanthropist Sir Torquil Norman, who spent £3 million of his own money getting the vehicle designed, prototyped and much of the way to production. For design and development, he engaged none other than Gordon Murray, whose aim was to come up with an “ultra-simple, ultra-cheap, ultra-robust and ultra-repairable” truck that could bring
supplies and mobility to the developing world. It can carry 13 people or up to 1,900kg, and will be built in Britain but flat-packed (six to a shipping-container) and assembled locally – wherever that might be. Its engine is the diesel from a Ford Transit. And thanks to Shell, the project has moved another step closer to reality. Its funding will help send a bespoke, pre-production OX to India, where an outreach programme will be set up to, in the words of Sir Norman, “demonstrate its capability in a key market, which will help attract longterm production partners”.

Volvo Electric Trucks Hit The Streets - At Night! For some time Volvo Trucks has been hyping its electric truck program, which aims to use the quietness and clean running of electric vehicles to move inner-city deliveries away from peak traffic hours to the still of the night - which you can’t do with diesel trucks because urbanites would complain about the noise and fumes. Volvo’s Off-Peak City Distribution project studied the effects of goods transport at night in central Stock-
holm and found that by avoiding peak hour traffic the trucks were able to do their jobs in one-third of the time that it took in daylight. Now the first two FL Electric trucks have begun operations in Gothenburg, one with waste collection and recycling company Renova and the other with general haulage firm TGM, and Volvo has released details of their drivetrains for the first time. Each 16 tonne truck has a 185kW/425Nm electric mo-
tor and two-speed transmission driving the rear axle, powered by between two and six 50kWh lithium-ion batteries, for a maximum range of up to 300km. Series production and sales of FL Electric trucks will begin in 2019 in Europe and Volvo will be offering custom versions, compatible with several different brands of charging equipment, based on individual customers’ needs in terms of driving cycles, load capacity, uptime, range and other parameters.

Crokes Reach Seventh Consecutive Club Final Words: Adam Moynihan
Dr Crokes secured their place in the 2018 Club Championship final with a 0-18 to 1-10 victory over Austin Stacks in Lewis Road on Sunday. Stacks started brightly and raced into an early lead but Crokes’ class eventually began to show and the sides went in level at the break. The hosts dominated the third quarter and scored five unanswered points as the tie, which was effectively a semi-final, began to slip away from Kieran Donaghy and co. Tony Brosnan (five) and Micheál Burns (four) topscored for the reigning champions who eventually ran out five-point winners. Pat O’Shea’s side are now preparing for their seventh consecutive Club Championship final. They have won four of the previous six. Their opponents in this year’s decider will be Dingle who maintained their perfect record in Group 2 by defeating Legion in Páirc an Ághasaigh. Dingle came out of the traps quickly and when Paul Geaney registered his sixth goal in three games midway through the first half, the home team were 1-3 to no score up. Dingle were relatively comfortable thereafter and limited Legion to just a handful of scores en route to a 1-10 to 0-5 win. The Killarney side had an outside shot of making the final heading into this game, but they also could have finished bottom if results went completely against them. James O’Sullivan’s team naturally want to be competing for silverware but they will, no doubt, be relieved to avoid a relegation playoff. Dingle and Crokes met in the 2015 Club Championship final when a brace from Cathal Bambury fired Dingle to a memorable four-point win. Kenmare were hammered by Rathmore in their final group game so they’ll face An Ghaeltacht, who lost to Kerins O’Rahilly’s, in a relegation showdown at the end of the season. That is unless either Kenmare or An Ghaeltacht manage to reach the final of the County Championship, in which case the other team will be automatically relegated. If they both make the final (which is unlikely, to be fair) Rahilly’s will face Legion in the relegation playoff. In the Intermediate, Noel Duggan (twice) and Kevin McCarthy netted the crucial goals as Kilcummin took another step towards reclaiming their senior status at the first time of asking. They secured their passage to the last four with a comprehensive 3-11 to 0-8 victory over Brosna. Their opponents in the semi-final will be Division 1 outfit Templenoe. Glenflesk were already in the hat for the next round following convincing wins against Waterville and Castleisland but they put the icing on the cake with a dominant display against Laune Rangers in Killorglin. Goals from Lee O’Donoghue (two), Ian Roche and Darragh Roche helped them to a 4-12 to 0-11 win. They’ll play St Mary’s in the semi-final. Both
semis will take place April 28/29. Mary’s, who reached the last four in 2017, and Templenoe, who lost to An Ghaeltacht in the final, will provide very stern tests but Kilcummin and Glenflesk both have enough about them to go at least one step further. From an East Kerry point of view, it would be great to see an Oskars reunion over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Beaufort, who finished on maximum points, will play Churchill in the last four of the Junior Premier. On the other side of the draw, Fossa won’t know the identity of their opponents until after this weekend’s rescheduled Na Gaeil v Finuge tie. Finuge must win to advance. A draw would do for Na Gaeil.

SmallTalk
Ahead of this weekend’s All-Ireland football final against Coláiste Bhaile Chlár, Adam Moynihan spoke with Pres captain Anna Clifford about her teammates and their season so far Hi Anna. How are preparations going for your big All-Ireland final on Saturday? Any nerves? I feel that our chances are quite high. We have a very strong, fit team and we’ve been training very hard for the past number of weeks. We’ve had a number of challenge games and hard training sessions and I feel we’re ready for the big match. The nerves are beginning to kick in now but we just need to be focused on the game. What has been the highlight of the campaign so far? My highlight so far was definitely winning the Munster final because we got the chance to play in Fitzgerald Stadium, which was the first time for the majority of us. This really meant a lot to us and overall it was a very enjoyable experience. Did you think at the start of the year that the team would make it this far? No, but we were very surprised when we saw how well we worked together as a team. We really just took one game at a time and worked on from there. What would it mean to win an All-Ireland for your school? Words really wouldn’t describe how much it would mean for us to win this All-Ireland for the school. Our school hasn’t been in a football All-Ireland in the past twenty years and it would really mean a lot to us to if we won it. A few questions about your teammates… Who would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? I can’t say there are any of my teammates that I wouldn’t want to be stuck in a lift with - we all get on great together and enjoy each other’s company. Who trains the hardest? Everybody on the team all train equally as hard as each other and everyone always
shows up to training and matches. Who’s the best athlete? Thankfully we have a very fit team and play a very quick game. We have some fantastic athletes such as Ava Doherty, Tara Murphy, Chloe O’Connor and many more. Who’s the most skilful player? We have a number of talented forwards with plenty of skill. Ciara Randles is our free-taker and has excellent accuracy. Shelly Clifford and Julie Delany are a big threat in the inside line and Treasa O’Sullivan and Kate Lynch have a fabulous left leg! Who’s the toughest? That would have to be Mairéad Bennett. She has won many judo competitions and is excellent for man-marking strong players. Who’s the most intelligent? There are many intelligent players on the pitch who can really read the game well. Ava Doherty and Treasa work very well as sweepers. Our full back line always manage to be out in front and our forwards have great eye for the ball and always give the right pass. Who’s the biggest moaner? I probably would be one of the biggest moaners on the team. I hate when the ref doesn’t call a free and I get quite annoyed about it! Who’s the biggest joker? It has to be one of our trainers, Paudie Breen. He always manages to make the team laugh! Legend! What was your proudest sporting moment? One of my proudest sporting moments this year was being captain of the school team and winning Player of the Match in our Munster final.
Sport
Anna Clifford
And the most embarrassing? The most embarrassing moment for me was when I came to a final without my football boots. If you had to compare yourself to an intercounty player, who would it be? Darran O’Sullivan or Stephen O’Brien because the main thing for me in a game is speed and running a lot. If you could meet any three sportspeople who would they be? Katie Taylor, Ronaldo and Conor McGregor! What’s the best piece of advice you had ever received? “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you.” Is there any app on your phone that you couldn’t live without? I definitely couldn’t’ live without Snapchat. It’s the app I’m on the most and it’s where I text all my friends. What’s your most used emoji?
What would you sing at karaoke? I wouldn’t sing any song at karaoke because I wouldn’t want to hurt anyone’s ears! Thanks Anna. All the best in the final. Thanks!

Celtic, who were a man light for the last half an hour, led 2-0 with 10 minutes to go but the hosts staged an incredible comeback to steal victory from the jaws of defeat. A remarkable double is now on the cards for Pike as they’re also in the final of the FAI Junior Cup. Wayne Sparling fired Celtic into the lead with a brilliant free kick in the 17th minute and when Peter McCarthy doubled their advantage from the spot before half time, the Killarney side were in a great position. Cathal O’Shea picked up a second yellow with 62 minutes on the clock but, despite heavy
pressure, Celtic managed to keep Pike at bay for the next 20 minutes. The hosts pulled one back through Steven McGann in the 83rd minute and they were level just moments later when Pat Mullins headed home from six yards out. The game seemed to be heading for extra time but, with the clock winding down, Cian Collins got in behind and clipped a superb effort over David Spillane’s head and into the Celtic goal. Pike will now face the winners of Newmarket Celtic and Janesboro in the final. There’s no nice way to lose a semi-final but this was particularly harsh on Celtic, who once again have given a great account of themselves at provincial and national level this season.
Cedar On Brink Of Promotion To Premier B Cedar Galaxy are on the brink of promotion to the second tier of Kerry football following a comprehensive victory over Sporting Listowel on Sunday. Talismanic striker John Foley bagged a hattrick and laid on three assists for his teammates as Galaxy ran out 7-1 winners in Mounthawk Park, a result which has propelled them to the top of Division 1A at a crucial stage of the season. They are now two points clear of
QPR (who have two games in hand) and, crucially, seven points clear of third place Ballyheigue Athletic (who also have two games in hand). With the top two going up, victory over Athletico Ardfert in their final game of the season will now guarantee Cedar promotion and a place in the league final. As Ballyheigue and QPR still have to play each other twice, it seems as though Killarney’s youngest club could well be moving up divisions for the fourth time in 8 seasons.
Cup Draw:
Holders Athletic Get ‘Island Away The draw for the quarter finals of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup took place this week and Killarney Athletic will face Castleisland away in the only all-top-flight tie in the round. Apart from Celtic, this was just about the most difficult fixture we could have been handed and we’ll definitely have our work cut out to win back there. We have already failed to beat them three
times this season (we drew 2-2 and 3-3 in the league and they knocked us out of the FAI) so they’re probably happy enough to play us again at this stage. Elsewhere, Celtic will host an up-andcoming Tralee Celtic side who recently secured promotion to the Premier A, Listowel will travel to Tralee to face Mitchels Avenue, and Premier B outfit Killorglin will play Fenit.

Georgie O’Callaghan RIP The soccer community in Kerry was united in grief this past week as news broke of the sad passing of the great George O’Callaghan. Georgie was a founder of Castleisland AFC and worked tirelessly down through the years to further both his own club and soccer in the county in general. He will be fondly remembered by all as a true gentleman, an inspirational mentor and a legend of Kerry soccer.

Glow Football Comes To Killarney A group of intrepid youngsters gathered at Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre on Monday night to take part in a very special game of football… In the dark. Glow football is a new FAI initiative aimed at introducing girls to, and keeping girls interested in, the beautiful game. Killarney Celtic was one of four clubs nationwide chosen to roll out this new scheme and PRO Ramona Keogh was delighted with how the event went. “It was a fantastic night,” she said. “There was a huge turn out with 24 kids as well as parents, spectators and representatives from local sports bodies in attendance. The atmosphere was just electric and the kids were so excited, as were the parents. When the lights went out the hall just lit up with luminous headbands, armbands, bibs and face paint. “The FAI filmed it on the night their media and communications team were on site for three hours. It was a very proud evening for the club. Big thanks to the FAI, especially David Lenane, Darren Aherne, Tom O’Shea and the FAI Communications Department, for choosing Killarney Celtic for the launch of glow football.”
Ricciardo’s Magic & Hamilton’s Disaster In China Motorsport
Daniel Ricciardo’s success at the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix has not just thrown the 2018 title race wide open but also proves that, as he says himself, he doesn’t win boring races. The “best overtaker in the business did it again,” said the BBC’s Andrew Benson following Ricciardo’s victory in Shanghai ahead of Mercedes’s Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. The Red Bull driver is “lighting up the 2018 season” with his performances on the track, and with his personality off it, Benson added. Ricciardo is now 17 points behind leader Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ championship. The Red Bull
ace believes he can challenge for the 2018 F1 title following his stunning win in China. While Daniel Ricciardo was celebrating his victory, reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton was left to rue a disappointing weekend. Following his fourth-place finish in Shanghai, Hamilton described his performance as a disaster. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff also warned the team “need to get our act together”. Hamilton’s fourth-placed finish means he is nine points behind the leader, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, in the F1 drivers’ championship. The British driver admitted that a fifth F1 championship will be “very tough” in 2018.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy
Last weekend Munster played their second match on South African soil in the PRO 14 championship when they took on the Toyota Cheetahs. The Cheetahs were expected to provide much stiffer opposition and the altitude of the stadium would also be a huge challenge. The pace of the game was fast, but this match could never be labelled a classic. JJ Hanrahan answered some of his critics with a good display from the boot but it was a last gasp penalty kicked by Conor Murray that will rightly receive all the headlines.
The U-14 Rathmore/ Gneeveguilla spikeball team who won gold at the County Championships.
Rugby Legend Donncha To Call It A Day Murray kicked a penalty from a few metres inside his own half to win the game. All in all, a very successful trip to South Africa for Johan Van Graan’s men ahead of the trip to Bordeaux next weekend for the Champions Cup semi-final against Racing 92. Let’s hope the mighty men in red can win to reach a much-coveted European Cup final. Also making the headlines last weekend was the announcement by Donncha ‘Donners’ O’Callaghan that he is to retire from professional rugby. O’Callaghan will call it a day following his final game for Worcester
Warriors on April 28. Over the course of a fantastic career, the Corkman won the Grand Slam and the Heineken Cup (twice), led the Lions and played on two tours and earned a reputation as being one of the genuinely nice guys of rugby. Having met Donncha on numerous occasions (and even calling our second son after the legend), all I can say is that this giant of rugby will be sorely missed. Always one to stick around and wait until he met every single person and ensuring everyone got their photos, he al-
ways had fantastic time for the kids. In the age of rugby players being fairly inaccessible, Donncha was one of a kind. Best of luck Donncha in your retirement!

Around The World
How I Became A Diehard Warriors Fan
Words: Adam Moynihan
I love basketball but you’d nearly want the stamina of LeBron James just to maintain interest throughout the NBA’s 82-game regular season. 82 games. It’s madness when you think about it. Realistically, a handful of teams are absolute certs to make the playoffs, and the same teams are the only ones with a genuine chance of winning the thing, so in many ways the regular season is just a (really long) warm-up for the main attraction. The playoffs are finally back again, though. Thanks be to god. Basketball is quite popular in Ireland but it doesn’t attract the same kind of fandom as other sports. The time difference is probably the main reason behind this but I’ve also noticed that most Irish basketball fans I know are casual followers and don’t REALLY support a specific team. Let’s be honest, you’re not going to stay up until 3am watching a game unless you’re emotionally attached to one of the teams (or you’re waiting on a five-fold accumulator). To counteract this, I’ve managed to maintain my interest down the years by being a proper bandwagon when it comes to basketball. (In my defence, I’m also an Aston Villa fan so I’ve already endured enough misery to last me several lifetimes. I’m hardly going to support the Sacramento Kings as well.) I was a Bulls fan in the 90s (naturally) and in the early
‘00s I liked the Lakers for a while because of Kobe Bryant. In more recent years, I was a fan of OKC when they had Westbrook, Durant and Harden. I was sick enough when they broke that group up actually. In hindsight, that wasn’t very good bandwagoning on my part. Now I’m a Golden State Warriors fan. That seems selfexplanatory seeing as how they’ve won two of the last three championships but, funnily enough, I actually didn’t jump on the bandwagon this time. I realise that this sounds like the biggest lie of all time, and I’m being a right basketball hipster, but I actually started following Golden State BEFORE they were good. Okay, not back when they were completely useless. They made the playoffs once between 1995 and 2012 so they weren’t exactly on my radar back then. But around 2012/13, when they won 47 games under Mark Jackson and beat the Denver Nuggets in the first round, I definitely warmed to them and to Stephen Curry in particular. Later that year, when I was living in Beijing, the Warriors played the Lakers in a pre-season game around ten minutes from my house. An American friend happened to be visiting and her uncle is a photographer for the NBA, so we got really good tickets. It was only pre-season, and the Lakers were cat (Kobe was injured), but I got to see Steph Curry
and Klay Thompson knock down threes in the flesh. They were an exciting young team and I had seen them live, so that was more than enough reason to start supporting them. Having said all that, I wouldn’t exactly call myself a fan in the same way that I’d call myself a Villa fan. Now that I think about it, I don’t see why not because it’s pretty much as arbitrary. Why should I feel more attached to an English soccer club than an American basketball club? So yeah, I’m a Warriors fan. The last three seasons have been highly entertaining and they’re we’re favourites to win it all again this year. Steph Curry is expected to miss the entire first and second rounds with a grade two MCL strain but Durant, Thompson and Draymond Green will likely lead Steve Kerr’s team to the conference finals regardless. In the east, 33-year-old LeBron James, who had one of his best regular seasons ever with the Cleveland Cavaliers, will be aiming to win his eighth consecutive conference title. The Cavs and the Warriors have met in the last three NBA Finals, which has led many observers to bemoan a lack of competitiveness in the league. As a diehard Warriors fan, I think the rivalry is great and I’d love to see LeBron and Steph go toe-to-toe again in June. If the Warriors win it’ll be a nice pick-me-up after Villa fall flat on their face in the Championship playoffs.

After an entertaining Topics session, and a tea break we had our Evaluation contest. Derry told us a hilarious story from his youth. That speech was then evaluated by our four contestants. Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, Men’s Club
Club Members were very pleased to see that the new 1st green on Killeen was opened for play over last weekend, and two weeks earlier than was scheduled for, despite the atrocious weather conditions that we have encountered since the start of the year. The Competition on Sunday the 15th of April was the Club Championship Singles Matchplay Qualifier, kindly sponsored by Aghadoe Heights Hotel, a GOY Competition, played on Killeen Course. The weather conditions were very tough from the very outset, and became so bad in the mid-afternoon that many players were unable to finish their round. Despite this the scoring was exceptional and the winner with 38 Pts. was Jason Arthur, and in 2nd place was Martin Fowler with 37 Pts. Dr Crokes Club
SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 3RD ROUND: Dr Crokes 0-18 Austin Stacks 1-10. Our opponents got off to a great start, sending over three points without reply in the first five minutes, despite playing against the strong breeze. We had one of our two great periods in the game as we sent over six points without reply, some of them from long distances. Austin Stacks reduced our lead to a point with two points before the end of the first quarter. We had the next two points for a goal lead but a goal by our opponents in the 19th minute gave them equality as we entered the last ten minutes. We again went two points ahead but Stacks had two points before the end of the half to leave the teams level 0-10 to 1-7 at the end of the first thirty minutes. I’d say our opponents were more pleased than us at half time as they

would have the advantage of the breeze for the second half. I said we had a very good period in the first half but we had an even more productive period in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered points. This was the winning and losing of the game as the fourth quarter was very even with each side scoring two points which left us 0-18 to 1-10 winners. Even though it would be hard to signal out individuals in this game one would have to mention the displays of Tony Brosnan and Micheal Burns who contributed nine points between them, five for Tony and four for Micheal and especially Brian Looney for his great work rate and two outstanding points. We more than held our own at midfield during the game and one would have to give credit to our defence who performed heroically especially in the last ten minutes to prevent Stacks from getting the goal they badly needed. UNDER 16: We played another home game in this u16 div 3 County League against near neighbours Glenflesk. Final score Dr Crokes 4-12 Glenflesk 2-2.

Killarney Legion
MEMBERS MEETING: A special members meeting will be held in the clubhouse on Friday 20th.April at 8 p.m.sharp.Members are asked to make a special effort to attend as there will be some very important issues on the agenda. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dingle 1-10 Killarney Legion 0-5. The final round of the new club championship format saw the seniors travel to Dingle to see if they could make it three in a row wins in Párc an Aghasaigh. It was not to be however as the hosts ran out comfortable winners in the end. Dingle made full use of the strong wind at their backs in the first half as they went in at the break with a healthy 1- 6 to a single point lead. While the Legion had their fair share of ball but could not manoeuvre themselves into scoring positions - a problem throughout. With the advantage of a stiff breeze at their backs it was hoped that they could chip away at the deficit but again they could not threaten the Dingle goal and the supply of ball into the forwards was fragmented and often times misplaced. A tendency to move the ball laterally slowed the attacks down thus giving the Dingle backs time to re-set.The Legion defence did reasonably well with Cian Gammell,Damien O Sullivan and Danny Sheahan all doing well but the lack of scoring threat is definitely an issue going forward. SENIOR LADIES: Killarney Legion 5-6 Listowel Emmetts 1-6. The sticky underfoot conditions and gusting wind didn’t dampen the senior ladies efforts in this game as they laid the foundation for a well-deserved win in a determined first half display that saw them go to the relative comfort of the dressing room leading 3-3 to 0-5. Ironically the wind died substantially in the second half thus making the contest a battle of wills but once again playing a nice brand of team football a further 2-3 saw them carry the day 5-6 to 1-6. LOTTO: Winning no’s - 7,13,21,28. No winner. Next week’s jackpot €6,900.
