Killarney’s poor history of allowing public buildings fall into disrepair Progression of the Killarney Nursing Unit on the site of St Finan’s Hosptial is both welcome and alarming. | By Sean Moriarty

The first phase of construction of the new hospital – the replacement building for existing community hospitals – will be completed by the end of this month the HSE has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser. Works due to be completed this month include the marking out of the site (pictured) with a main contractor due to be appointed in the coming weeks once the procurement process is complete. The development, which will be built on the grounds of St Finan’s Hospital, will replace the current St Columbanus Home and the District Hospital (short stay unit). It will be made up of four 25-bed units and a 30-bed dementia unit. However, while the progression of the hospital development is welcomed, it also begs the question, what will become of both the current St Columbanus Home and the District Hospital once construc-

tion of the new hospital is completed. Killarney has a poor history of letting public buildings that are no longer in use fall into disrepair. Back in 2009, the Franciscan Order donated the Áras Phadráig to the town council and 12 years on, and despite countless promises and plans, it remains undeveloped. The same applies to the former Pretty Polly factory on Park Road – also unoccupied since 2009 and in public ownership

since that time. Kerry County Council plans to build houses on part of the site but overall it has been allowed to fall into disrepair. The new hospital facility, is being built on the site of the former St Finan’s hospital. This beautiful building has been idle since September 2012. Kerry County Council have an interest in a small part of that site but this iconic building has also been allowed to fall into disrepair and there are no signs of a po-

Solution to Farranfore water in sight | By Sean Moriarty The problematic water main in Farranfore village is set to be replaced with works beginning later this month. There has been regular water bursts in the area over the last few years, the most-recent rupture in July caused widespread traffic disruption and left homes and businesses without water on one of the warmest days of the year and at time when there were thousands of tourists passing though the village. Previous bursts forced the closures of schools and creches in the village. All this could be a thing of the past very soon. Beginning on Monday, August 30, Irish Water sub-contractors will start a systematic replacement of water pipes in the area. The works will be carried out during

evening and night-time hours – from 7pm to 7am Monday evening to Friday morning and will continuing until the end of October. One lane will be closed during these night-time working hours with a stop-go system in place. Works will commence on the south side of the level crossing at Farranfore railway station and proceed towards Killarney for approximately 1km.

The works do not cross the railway tracks. The N22 Killarney to Tralee Road will remain fully open during the day, from 7 am to 7 pm, throughout the works. “It will come as no surprise to residents and businesses of the area that there have been regular bouts of unplanned outages in the recent past due to the ageing network. The size and scale of this challenge, not only in Kerry but nationally is well documented and reacting to this,

tential buyer. “Kerry County Council have confirmed that they wish to acquire 5.77 acres to the north of the Ring Road at Ballydribeen and the disposal of this element is being progressed with Kerry County Council,” a HSE spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “There has been no further interest in the former St Finan's building, and surrounding lands, to date from other state agencies, and so it is the HSE’s intention to dispose of the remainder of this property, via public sale, in the future in accordance with HSE Property Disposal protocols.” Both the St Columbanus Home and the District Hospital can be added to the growing list of unoccupied public buildings in the town. Irish Water is implementing their strategic plan to ensure security of supply, the reduction of high levels of leakage and the improvement of water quality in the county,” said Steven Blennerhassett, the Regional Delivery Lead with Irish Water. “We are very much aware of the issues with the water supply here in Kerry and are being very proactive in trying to resolve the problem with our colleagues in Kerry County Council as efficiently as possible. We recently again, engaged with the elected representatives and as always, we value the engagement with them. “Irish Water understands these types of works can be inconvenient and we are working with Kerry County Council, our contractor Ward and Burke and all stakeholders to make every effort to minimise any disruption the works may cause Residents and businesses in the areas of the works will be notified, and customers can call the Irish Water customer helpline on 1850 278 278 for any questions in relation to the works.

Killarney firms behind Bill Murray’s golf tour of Ireland | By Sean Moriarty American actor Bill Murray is on a tour of Ireland to film a new a series of his golf travel documentary ‘The Links Life’ and it is all thanks to two Killarney-based firms. The ‘Ghostbusters II’ and ‘Groundhog Day’ star will play at some of Ireland’s best golf courses, including Ballybunnion. The tour started at Druids Glen on Tuesday and will continue until next Thursday. Carton House, Carne Golf Links, Portsalon, Rosapenna, Cruit Island, Narin and Portnoo, Enniscrone, Connemara and the Galway Bay Golf Resort are also on the schedule. Muarry’s findings will be broadcast on YouTube at a later date and will be nar-

rated by legendary golf journalist and writer Tom Coyne. The trip is supported by Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland with help from two Killarney-based tourism companies. Local firm Experience Ireland Golf and Travel is providing the logistics support and access to the golf courses for the trip. “Tom Coyne approached us, he used us before and was happy with the way we do things,” said founder Tom Kennedy. “We organise the hotels and additional activities like trips to distilleries and falcon watching.” O’Callaghan Coaches and Chauffeur Services is providing the transportation for Murray and his crew. “It is great to be back on the road,” said Phillip O’Callaghan after months of being parked up. His brother Seamus is the coach driver.

ON SET: Lead actor Seámus Barra Ó Súilleabháin on the set of Macalla Chill Áirne, directed by New St man Charlie O'Brien

Film set on the Lakes of Killarney hoping for international release A Killarney film maker and director is hoping his new movie – set in his home town – will be picked up by various international film festivals in the Autumn. | By Sean Moriarty Charlie O’Brien, though currently based in Mexico, grew up on New St. An acclaimed musician, he has also narrated documentaries for TG4. His film, Macalla Chill Áirne is set on a Victorian era boat tour through Killarney's lakes. There are six people on board the boat, the boatmen speak Irish, the women English. One of the boatmen's brother is on the run from the police, while one of the ladies has lost her wedding ring. The film features Irish language performance poet Seámus Barra Ó Súilleabháin as the main actor. “In 2010 I presented and narrated the TG4 documentary, Saol John Riley’, which told the story of the San Patricio Battalion of the Mexican American War of 1847. I had written a song about those Irish Soldiers of Mexico and that’s how I was contacted to present the film,”

O’Brien told the Killarney Advertiser. “Since then I've made two other documentaries. ¨A Captain Unafraid¨ concerns an Irish-American sea captain who came to play a seminal role in the Cuban War of Independence. I wrote a song many moons ago about Captain ¨Dynamite¨ and the film eventually grew out of that. The other documentary ¨The Green Fields of Cuba¨ explored Irish music in Cuba along with the Irish American Tra group ¨The Green Fields of America.¨ He has entered the film in to several international festivals but he is still waiting for confirmation if he has been accepted or not. “The festivals it has been in are online ones so far, so public release has yet to come. I'm hoping the film will be exhibited at many other film festivals over the autumn/winter,” he added. “I'll find out in the next couple of months as they let me know - I´ve entered 20 or so.”

New Car Sharing Base opens in Killarney | By Sean Moriarty A new pay-as-you go car hire service has been launched in Killarney that will allow locals and tourists to rent cars or vans by the hour.

AWARD: Killarney Athletic chair Ger Nagle with club members and FAI officials at the club's grounds at Woodlawn earlier this week.

Killarney Athletic rewarded by FAI

The new GoCar base in Killarney brings the total number of GoCar locations nationally to 641, with over 800 vehicles available to rent by the hour. More vehicles will be added to the Killarney base as demand for the car sharing service grows. GoCar has confirmed a new location at the Tesco complex on the Deerpark Road. GoCar allows members to rent cars and vans from just €9 an hour. Registered users can book online or via the GoCar app, then unlock the vehicle either with their phone, GoCar card or Leap Card;

the keys are inside the car, with fuel, insurance and city parking all included in the rental price. “There is no doubt that the demand for car sharing services is there and as a result we are determined to make it as accessible as possible to consumers across the country. For many households GoCar presents a credible alternative to car ownership and is a really cost-effective solution for commuting, shopping trips, staycation travel and more. "People’s attitudes to car ownership and sustainable transport are constantly evolving, and now, more than ever before, they are rethinking their individual transport requirements and considering flexibility, cost and importantly - environmental impact,” said Colm Brady, Managing Director at Europcar Mobility Group Ireland, operators of GoCar.ie.

Killarney Athletic FC has joined an elite group of Irish soccer clubs to hold the FIA Clubmark Star One Star Player Development Centre Award. | By Sean Moriarty The certification rewards clubs that apply successful club governance, child welfare, safeguarding and coach education, player development plans and a club coaching structure. Killarney Athletic is one of only 26 clubs in the country to get the award. It was the culmination of two years’ work by club officials after first gained the FAI Clubmark Entry Level award. “In a nutshell running a club back in the day was getting teams out but now the work off the pitch is as important if not more important than on the pitch it is all about governance policies, procedures,

coach education and health and safety risk assessments.,” club chair Ger Nagle told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was a massive achievement to receive the award and to be one of only 26 Clubs in the whole country that have is great. It's about progressing our club to be the best at what we do and asking what should a club be about - It should be a place where players have a sense of belonging and be proud to be part of the Blues.” Officials from the FAI were at the club’s Woodlawn clubhouse earlier this week where club officials were presented with the award.

Killarney Races disappointed at spectator restrictions Attendance at this month's Race Festival in Killarney will remain capped at five hundred attendees which organisers have called "unfair and unjust". Racing will take place at Killarney Racecourse from Thursday, August 19 to Saturday 21 inclusive, and all tickets are now sold out. The restrictions are due to the ongoing public health guidelines. Since racing reconvened in June, over five hundred horse racing fixtures have successfully taken place in Ireland behind closed doors or with limited capacities throughout the pandemic. In July, Killarney Races saw spectators in their stand for the first time since August 2019 and albeit in limited numbers it instilled some hope for the further easing of restrictions and larger numbers attending their August meetings. Despite lobbying by the industry and the obvious relaxation of restrictions in other sectors and sports, circumstances for the team at Killarney Races have remained unchanged, much to their disappointment. “Whilst other sports have moved on, horse racing has endured extremely low levels of attendees e.g. All-Ireland Semi-Finals at 24,000 v’s Killarney's July Racing Festival on a 90-acre open site at five hundred, which is extremely unjust and unfair," Ger Coughlan, Chairman of the Board of Killarney Races said. "Of course, we'll put on another great day of racing for those who were fortunate enough to buy their tickets before they sold out. We have a fantastic garden party feel with ample space, lots of outdoor seating and it's looking like the weather is going to play its part again too. That said it is extremely disappointing that more people cannot enjoy it also. Killarney

is busy with staycationers, many of whom are fully vaccinated and would love a day out at Killarney Races, they can dine indoors and shop in their droves in town, yet they cannot watch a race here, surely it’s time for common sense to prevail."

RACE CARD

Thursday evening is an all-Flat card while National Hunt cards will feature on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Highlights each day include the prestigious Ruby Stakes on Thursday, a Grade B Handicap Hurdle on Friday and a Graded Chase Saturday. Sponsors include Boylesports, Adare Manor, The Irish Examiner and The Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund. Killarney Races will race again for the final fixture of 2021, on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3, and tickets for that meeting will be available online soon. Visit killarneyraces. ie and sign up to their newsletter to ensure you're the first to know when the tickets are live and keep up to date with all the news and updates from the racecourse or follow their social media channels today. Speaking of the likelihood of greater attendances and the easing of restrictions for that weekend, Ger Coughlan added that “Naturally that would be great". "However, for the team here who have worked very hard to ensure strict adherence to all guidelines to keep the horse racing industry going, it’s very much a case of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. We are confident that the situation will be much improved for our October race-meeting.”

Cahernane House preparing for a spooky Hallowe’en As part of its residential Halloween package, the historic Cahernane House Hotel will host a night of storytelling this Halloween with Eddie Lenihan, one of the few traditional seanchaí still working in Ireland. Eddie will tell the residents ancient stories about the myths and legends of Irish folklore as well as some of the Irish fairy stories which he has collected from old people over the years. Irish fairy stories form a prominent part of his huge repertoire, but there are historical tales too, stories of notable figures such as the banshee, devil stories, accounts of saints, of monsters, ogres, giants and ghosts. Some of the stories are not for the faint hearted and were collected from his years of research and by walking the tracks and trails of forgotten Ireland where solitary hawthorn bushes mark the sacred meeting places of the fairies. “An interesting character, and an enthralling storyteller, Eddie has captured the imagination of audiences from Dublin to Dubai. The story telling evening is for residents only and is part of a twonight Halloween Break which includes other ‘not so scary’ activities for children,” said a hotel spokesperson. “Reminiscent of times gone by, the house never lost its Victorian charm despite the changeover of owner’s numerous times throughout its history. It too

has great history and many people have reported seeing the ghost of Gwendolyn Herbert, the daughter of the original owner of the house as she makes her way eerily up the grand hand carved oak staircase.” The Halloween package at Cahernane is available for any two nights from October 23 to 25.

Cycling club’s drive for better youth opportunities Killarney Cycling Club’s Stefan Caulfield-Dreier is in Holland this week contesting the U23 Track Cycling European Championships. | By Sean Moriarty He is the second member of Killarney Cycling Club to make the Irish team and follows in the wheels of John Blackwell who was on regular Irish Track Team duty between 2004-09 but plans being hatched by the local club could make this a more regular occurrence. Stefan, who lives in Beaufort, started cycling with the club in 2013/14 in the U12 category and enjoyed mixing his cycling with other sports for a number of years. Along the way he had many successes culminating in an U16 national time-trial title in 2019 and this year he won two silver medals at the Irish Junior Track Cycling Championships. “Stefan’s dedication to his sport is a beacon to all our young riders and shows that love of sport and hard work can pay off. On behalf of everyone in the club I congratulate Stefan, his parents Heiko and Louise who have closely supported him, and his club mentors,” said club chairman

Mark Murphy. The European Track Cycling Championship concludes in Appledoorn on Sunday – see next week’s Killarney Advertiser for a full breakdown on Stefan’s results across a series of different races and competitions. The Ireland National Junior Coach, Martin O’Loughlin, speaking from the squad’s training camp in Spain, said that Stefan will compete in both the team pursuit and individual pursuit, and hopefully the Omnium which is four bunch races in a single day. He also paid tribute to Stefan’s work-ethic. “He has made a huge commitment to track cycling this year, travelling twice a week from Kerry to Dublin for training, and it has paid off for him,” said O’Loughlin.

FUTURE OF CYCLING IN KILLARNEY

Following Stefan’s inclusion in the Irish team for this week’s European Champi-

onships, the local club will launch a new scheme to ensure that young cycling talent in Killarney will continue to reach the top of the sport. “In the autumn we will launch a new initiative to promote the retention of young riders in the sport and to give a supported pathway of progression from U16 to Junior and onto to U23 level,” Mark said. “We are going to spare nothing in this regard and I would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters whose good will and financing make this type of outcome possible.” One of the club’s prime reasons for pushing on with a dedicated youth scheme is as a result of COVID-19 restrictions that prevented club members from competing in major events. “It is especially significant given the difficulties with COVID-19 as our excellent crop of Juniors – which we had nurtured up through underage years - have missed out on two years of top-level competition and opportunity, such as The Junior Tour of Ireland. They would possibly have been one of the strongest Junior teams in the club’s history,” he added.

U13 soccer team do Killarney proud in Belfast | By Sean Moriarty A youth team from Killarney Athletic were the only Kerry-based squad to compete in the Belfast Youth Cup last week. The U13 arm of the club were one of a very small amount of clubs from outside of Northern Ireland to participate in the invitation only tournament. This Killarney Athletic team is worth watching – previously they won the U11 competition in the Dublin School Boys

Cup, the first team from outside Dublin to win it. Killarney Athletic team were invited to last year’s Belfast Youth Cup but the event was cancelled. Instead they took up the invitation this year and while results did not go their way, club chairperson Ger Nagle said "It was a massive experience for them and the made lifelong memories". The Belfast Youth Cup is usually open to British and European teams too but the organisers were unable to invite them due to the ongoing uncertainty

with international travel regulations. The tournament was held at the Ulster University Jordanstown between August 9 to 11. On the opening day of the competition they played four matches against some of Northern Ireland’s best schoolboy football teams including Dungannon, Rosario, Ballymena, Linfield, Ballinmallard and Warrenpoint Town FC. Unfortunately their number one goalkeeper Ewan McCrohan got injured in the opening match against Dungannon and they were on the backfoot for the

rest of the tournament. “Fionn Sheehan went between the posts for Ewan the rest of the first day but he too got injured in the last game so JJ O’Donoghue stepped up and made a few great saves, but Ewan was back in action for the second day,” said Ger. They eventually qualified for the fifth and sixth play of the final loosing 1-0 to Coleraine. “They did Killarney Athletic proud,” Ger added.

Facilities boost for Killarney Centre Privacy booths in shared workspaces, additional audio-visual systems, and the installation of e-chargers are just some of the enhanced facilities for a Killarney centre thanks to recent grant funding of €67,122. Killarney Innovation Centre is one of 12 centres in Kerry who learned that their application through the Department of Rural and Community Development Connected Hubs Call was successful. More than 117 digital hubs across the country have benefited from the Connected Hubs call. “This grant allocation from the Department of Rural and Community Development has confirmed the Government’s commitment to rural hubs and is acknowledging the role and importance of centres such as ours and the positive impact we can have on the local and global business environment,” Centre Manager, Conor O’Leary, said. Killarney Innovation Centre will use the allocated funding to enhance the facilities of the centre for its clients adding such items as privacy booths in their shared workspaces, additional audio-visual systems to allow for distant connectivity and assist to progress their greening development with the installation of e-chargers and an enclosed bike bay area. Kerry County Council has this week announced that there will be a series of LOCAL + LIVE outdoor music shows taking place across the county in early September. ANSEO Kerry, supported by Kerry County Council and funded through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media’s ‘Local Live Performance Scheme’, will showcase local musical talent, helping to get musicians back performing via a number of live events with afternoon and evening shows at a number of different locations across the county. ANSEO Kerry will be a family-friendly, alcohol-free, ticket only event for two hundred people at each event which will be allocated in socially distanced pods. The concerts will be free of charge and there is expected to be much demand for these socially distanced shows. ANSEO Kerry is being run in line with full Govern-

ment guidelines and protocols in place.

VARIETY

ANSEO Kerry will feature a range of music and performances from Kerry’s great repertoire, so expect a variety of different genres of music with something for everyone in the line-up. Screened visual arts and local imagery relating to people and places will also be seen at some of the shows as a backdrop to performances. "This is such a positive initiative which has been carefully and safely designed to support those who locally work in the arts," Cllr. Jimmy Moloney, Mayor of Kerry, said. "This sector has been badly affected over the past 18 months. Not only will these live concerts be a boost to musicians, but will support staff whose livelihoods disappeared overnight, as well of course as being a great experience for those attending." Munster Eagles take flight!

21 eagles chicks released into the wild at four Munster sites A significant milestone has been reached with the re-introduction of White-Tailed (Sea) Eagles to Ireland last weekend, as 21 Norwegian-born Eagle chicks were released into the wild. Released at the four Munster sites - Killarney National Park, on the Shannon Estuary, Lough Derg, and Waterford, it is hoped they will bolster Ireland’s existing White-Tailed Eagle population. The chicks have been kept in purpose-built enclosures while they grew, matured, and developed the feathers and muscles necessary for flight. They were carefully monitored and tagged by

NPWS staff leading the collaborative reintroduction programme, which began in 2007. The satellite tags will allow the project to monitor their progress and their integration into the existing Irish breeding population. The chicks were collected under licence in June from nests throughout the Trondheim area of West-Central Norway by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA). Their release is part of the second phase of the highly successful project to reintroduce this magnificent, iconic bird back to Irish skies. The First Phase ran from 2007-2011,

managed by the NPWS and the Golden Eagle Trust, when one hundred chicks were released into the wild. Since then, over 35 Irish-born chicks have fledged here, some of whom have begun to rear their own chicks. Indeed, this year one nesting pair on Lough Derg produced three chicks.

SECOND PHASE

This Second Phase, managed by NPWS Regional Manager Eamonn Meskell with the advice of Dr. Allan Mee, will secure the substantial gains of the first phase of the Programme and expand the range of

the existing population, which has so far nested in sites in Kerry, Cork, Tipperary, Galway, and Clare. The Second Phase was launched last year, when 10 Norwegian-born chicks were flown into Ireland and released into the wild on the Shannon Estuary and Lough Derg. Of these, an astonishing nine are still alive, and have travelled throughout the country, with one even travelling to Scotland. “I’d like to pay tribute to all involved and acknowledge their commitment to making this project a success, now and in the years to come," Minister for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD, said. Returning this lost flagship species to Irish skies will be a huge step in restoring Irish natural heritage and improving Irish conservation efforts, and will benefit Irish biodiversity more broadly.

Huge disappointment as Quest Killarney 2021 cancelled

Student turned teacher at Killarney School of Music

The adventure community received the disappointing announcement this week that Quest Killarney will be cancelled for the second year running due to restrictions on outdoor gatherings.

A former student at Killarney School of Music will become the school’s new signing teacher after qualifying with a Masters’ Degree in Vocal Performance from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama this summer.

The event attracts 4,000 adventure enthusiasts and supporters from all over Ireland to experience the amazing outdoor scenery of Killarney. The cancellation of this event is a huge economic blow to Killarney as the event has an estimated economic impact of €3 million through direct and indirect spending. The event is organised by local Killarney company Elite Events. Race Director Oliver Kirwan expressed disappointment. "We reluctantly took the decision to cancel Quest Killarney in light of continued restrictions surrounding outdoor events," he said. "We will be working hard to give everyone an even better experience in 2022, and I

Laura O’Keeffe, who is well known locally for her performances at St Mary’s Cathedral will take up her new role on September 9. The Lissivigeen native was a student at the school up to 2017. After that she earned an Honours degree from CIT Cork School of Music before moving to Wales. While studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama she performed with the BBC National Chorus of Wales and The Welsh National Opera Chorus. Her singing career has taken her all over Europe including Wales, Scotland, Italy and Portugal as well as many solo concerts, recitals, chamber music and opera scenes across Ireland but she is now ready to return to home. “I feel really blessed,” she told the Kil-

would like to thank those involved for their support and encouragement this far.” The pandemic has had a severe impact on the events industry, he added. “It has been 18 months since we have had an event and an opportunity to trade. We are hopeful that the Government’s ‘Living with COVID’ plan to be published at the end of August will consider the wider implications of the events industry when setting out guidelines.”

RETURN: Laura O'Keeffe is the new singing teacher at Killarney School of Music

larney Advertiser. “People in Killarney would know me from singing at the Cathedral or at local weddings. I fluked getting into Cardiff – there was only 12 of us and we were taught by the best singers in the world.” Laura is also available for local events like weddings and can be contacted on 085 2422159.

Why is it so hard to lose weight?

HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU ASK YOURSELF WHY IT'S SO HARD TO LOSE WEIGHT?

Anyone with a weight loss goal working hard on establishing healthy habits and trying to decrease the frequency of making unhealthy choices knows that losing weight takes time! By now, you’ve likely heard our nutrition coaching staff say that progress is rarely a straight line and that your weight loss journey is going to take a long term approach to dial things in. This takes much dedication and patience on your part. Paying attention to nutrition and taking the time to learn healthy habits to keep the weight off and be healthy across your lifespan is challenging but rewarding work. Our nutrition coaches work with clients at various points in their journey. Everyone has their reasons for wanting to improve their nutrition. While losing weight is not a goal for everyone, losing weight and lowering body fat is the most common goal we hear. Many people acknowledge that they need an accountability partner to help lose weight because they encounter all too common roadblocks during their weight loss journey.

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THREE OF THE MOST COMMON ROADBLOCKS TO LOSE WEIGHT

Looking for quick fixes or following fad diets It is often really tempting to follow a diet that you have heard has worked for someone else, which has led to rapid weight loss. What you don’t know about this is that these quick fixes or fad diets are often super restrictive and are tough to sustain, leading to the regaining of weight. There is no one size fits all approach to weight loss. The benefit of meeting with a nutrition coach is that we work with you to develop an individualised plan that fits your lifestyle. We also teach you to layer healthy habits over time and communicate with you regularly regarding strategies to stay on track with your goals. Not paying attention to what is going into our beverages So many times we look at incorporating lots of healthy foods in our diet when we

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

EU Digital COVID Certificate Question: I want to travel to the EU with my family this summer. How can I get my Digital COVID Certificate? ANSWER: Ireland has introduced the EU Digital COVID Certificate (DCC) for travel from within the EU and EEA (the EU, plus Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein and Switzerland). The DCC provides proof that you have been fully vaccinated with one of the EU approved vaccines or you have recovered from COVID-19 in the last six months or you have received a negative COVID-19 test result immediately before travel.

The Digital COVID Certificate comes as a QR code on your smartphone, by email or in paper format. If you plan to travel abroad, you should check the testing and quarantining requirements of the country you are travelling to. There are four different types of DCC. If you have been vaccinated in Ireland your DCC will be sent to you automatically.

are trying to lose weight, but we forget to pay attention to what we are drinking. Things like sugary coffee beverages, regular soda, and fruit juices are packed with sugar and extra calories that can stand in the way of our weight loss goals. Our nutrition coaching staff help educate you about these commonly overlooked roadblocks, teach you the importance of logging, and help you learn to read food and beverage labels. These tactics will help you make a more informed decision about these items and see how drinking these beverages affects your goal attainment. Going all in and making too many changes at once Weight loss is a marathon and not a sprint. There is a tendency to want to make too many changes all at once in order to meet our goals sooner. What we see is that this is way too overwhelming, and people aren’t investing the time it takes to make healthy habits part of their foundation. You may hear your nutrition coach say that a three-month minimum time commitment is required when entering a nutrition programme. This is not to be mean, but rather help you achieve your goals by genuinely taking the time to learn healthy habits and avoid the temptation to make too many changes all at once. If you are looking to get some help with overcoming your own roadblocks on your weight loss journey, the nutrition coaching staff are here to help you achieve these goals. Schedule a free consultation www.activate.ie/free-intro and get started on achieving your weight loss goals.

CAO offers and options for the Class of 2021

The senior cycle journey through secondary school for the Class of 2021 has been unprecedented but like so many other people you have shown yourselves to be resilient and committed in the face of adversity.

You will enjoy a double serum and a triple layer mask in this luxurious facial. It's a three dimensional hydrating innovation and results are instant and lasting at any age. Facial begins with cleansing and toning of the upper neck, shoulders and face, followed by toner. The exfoliating paste, which is in single use sachet to keep active ingredients active, is then applied all over the décolleté, neck and face. It's rubbed in for few minutes, then sits on the skin allowing the enzymatic ingredi-

ents get to work. The steamer is applied over this to intensify the exfoliation process, open the pores and allow the enzymes to seep deep into the lower layer of the skin. While the exfoliator is on the skin we preform lymphatic drainage pressure point massage therapy, releasing the toxins from the face. This is great for bringing a glow to the skin. After the exfoliator is removed the extraction of these pesky blackheads can be done with ease. We then apply the hyaluronic serum, followed by massage. The specific Digi Esthetique massage movements are preformed for full head, neck, and shoulders, giving massive lymphatic drainage. Then the individually packeted triple layer mask is applied. It has been dubbed the snow mask with its intense cooling effect. Cranial pressure point scalp massage is preformed before the mask is removed to reveal the ultimate glowing skin. We apply the eye, neck, lip serums, and cream suited to your skin type. To book and appointment or for more information please call Jill on 064 6632966.

That part of your journey is almost over and once Leaving Cert results are issued on September 3 the next stage begins. Over the coming weeks I will be covering the detailed information that you need around results day, in relation to CAO offers and all the options available you at this stage. There is a lot of media-hype around the Leaving Cert results each year which can really increase stress levels for students while you await the results, make sense of how you have performed and see what you get offered. Much attention is focused around CAO points and this year students are concerned about a rise in points in lots of courses because on an increase in CAO applicants as well as the fact that students who have opted for a mixture of calculated grades and sitting the exam will be given the benefit of the best grade. All of that is out of your control and it is a waiting game to see how you get on. What is really important to remember is that there are several options open to you within and outside of CAO, many of which do not look at Leaving Cert points as a requirement for entry. These options will be covered in upcoming articles but for now the key dates which have been issued so far by the various departments and organisations are outlined here so just take note of them. Enjoy the last couple of weeks of the summer and remember that you have not just one pathway available to you but several options, including Colleges of Further Education which are still taking applications for Post Leaving Cert Courses, apprenticeships, traineeships and study abroad options. Key dates September 3 – Leaving Cert results issued

Incredible journey for wandering walrus On the latest stage of his incredible journey, Wally the wandering walrus who was first spotted off Valentia Island back in March, was seen lounging aboard a moored motorboat in a small cove near Clonakilty on the West Cork coast. Wally, a young male walrus, has travelled extensively on his journey south. After that first sighting in Kerry he’s spent time in south Wales, Cornwall, the Atlantic coast of France and as far south as Bilbao in northern Spain before working his way back via the Scilly Isles to Waterford and, most recently, West Cork. Adam Collins, a distillery spokesperson, told Sky News the company has "agreed to allow Wally to use the boat for as long as needs be and not move it until a more permanent solution can be found".

Normally, the boat is used to forage for rock samphire, a plant used in the manufacturing of gin. On his visit to Cork, the enormous sea creature, estimated to be roughly fouryears-old, is said to have sunk one small boat and damaged several others. Seal Rescue Ireland has launched an appeal for a pontoon or other floating platform for Wally to use as a "safe haulout site, so that he can be effectively monitored, protected from disturbance

and damage to property prevented". The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group said "although these images have a comic quality to them, there is a serious side to this, as this animal is a long way from home and we've no way of knowing whether it is stressed, and how it may react to stressful situations". The group has asked people to come no closer than one hundred metres to Wally, and for boat owners not to approach him in the water.

‘Consider It Cakes’ was established last year by Franciska Acs and her partner Daragh Kiely with the sole purpose of brightening up residents’ days with a simple but generous gesture when they have something to celebrate. Since the project was set up last summer, over 500 cakes and other baked goods for various occasions have been delivered to people living in direct provision with over 300 people currently volunteering to bake and deliver cakes to centres across the country. Volunteer Femhe Caffrey said as well as giving people a boost with a special delivery, organisers also hope it will let residents know there are people in the wider community who care for them, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. “The reactions are priceless and, since we started this initiative, it has brought so much joy into our lives because we feel like we can really make a change,” she said. known as a panthera spelaea, and another less-intact cub named Boris estimated to be 43,448-years-old, at a dig site near the Senyalyakh River in eastern Siberia above the Arctic Circle.

Sparta, as this female cave lion is called, is estimated to be 27,962-years-old, and may be the most well-preserved specimen ever found. Likely to be one or twomonths-old at the time of death, she was so intact that she still has whiskers, reports Carly Cassella of ScienceAlert. Scientists found the cave lion, also

Larger than African lions, the species lived in colder climates across Eurasia until becoming extinct about 10,000-years-ago. “To my knowledge, this is the best-preserved frozen specimen from the last Ice Age ever found,” study author Love Dalén, an evolutionary geneticist Stock-

holm University’s Centre for Palaeogenetics, said. “Sparta is in near-perfect condition.” “Given their preservation they must have been buried very quickly,” Dalén tells Katie Hunt of CNN. “So maybe they died in a mudslide, or fell into a crack in the permafrost. Permafrost forms large cracks due to seasonal thawing and freezing.” Scientists are hoping to sequence the genome of both cubs to gain a better understanding of the extinct species.

Asteroid Bennu is one of the most likely to hit Earth Bennu, a top-shaped rubble pile that orbits the sun in relative solitude, has been doing so for hundreds of millions of years.

CYCLE: John, Norah and Ava Keohane with the Emily Keohane Memorial Trophy for the Tom Crean Unsung Hero Cycle which takes place this September.

'Tom Crean Unsung Hero Cycle' launched This year's Tom Crean Unsung Hero Cycle will take place on Saturday, September 25. The cycle, in its fourth year, fondly remembers one of its young members, Emily Keohane, who passed away in 2017. The cycle is in conjunction with the Tour de Munster cycle which takes place every August. The cycle will leave from Ballyseedy Home & Garden Centre at 9.30am.

There will be three routes available to the cyclists - Tralee to Annascaul and back, Tralee to Dingle and back to Tralee via the Conor Pass, and the third route will include Slea Head. There will be refreshments along the way and food served on return to Ballyseedy. All funds raised will go directly to Down Syndrome Kerry. For updates follow them on Facebook 'Tom Crean Unsung Hero Cycle' or contact the Down Syndrome Kerry office at 066 7103804.

The asteroid, which is approximately a third of a mile across at its equator, is not a direct threat to Earth. However, there is a slight risk that Bennu will collide with Earth hundreds of years from now. In a new study published in the scientific journal Icarus, scientists used data from NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft to make a precise calculation of Bennu’s orbit and its future proximity to our home planet. The researchers then analysed the impact hazard between now and the year 2300. The study finds a 1-in-1,750 chance of a future collision over the next three centuries - a slightly higher probability than previously estimated. Nearly all of the riskiest encounters with Bennu will occur in the late 2100s and early 2200s, with the single likeli-

New Zealand locks down as one COVID case identified So strict are New Zealand that the country went it to national lockdown this week - after one COVID case was detected. Jacinda Ardern, the country's Prime Minister, made the decision as it was the first locally transmitted COVID-19 case in the country since February. Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, Ardern said that they were being cautious assuming it was the contagious Delta variant. It's believed that an unvaccinated 58-year-old man in Auckland, who had travelled to other parts of the country

and had a link to the border, tested positive for the virus. For three days - from 11.59pm Tuesday night their time - the country undertook a level four lockdown which meant that everyone had to stay at home and businesses, apart from essential services, had to close. "The best thing we can do to get out of this as quickly as we can is to go hard," Ms Ardern said at a news conference. "We have made the decision on the basis that it is better to start high and go down levels rather than to go low, not contain the virus and see it move quickly."

passed on and ultimately recycled, we are missing an opportunity to make clothing more sustainable," Dr. Sally Beken, Founder of the UK Circular Plastics Network and Head of Polymers at KTN, said. "Highlighting the scale of the problem is the first step to remedying it. After littering, incineration and landfill are the worst scenarios for textiles that are no longer useful. There are some novel solutions to the circularity of polymers and synthetic textiles that are starting to develop that will mean if we can capture garments, we can revalue them as starting materials for new plastic products.”

Children’s lost toys generated 500 tonnes of plastic waste! Research has revealed that children’s lost toys generate almost 500 tonnes of plastic waste per year in Ireland - the equivalent of over 30 million plastic bottles ending up in landfill. 90 percent of toys sold globally are made from plastic. With up to 5.5 million plastic toys lost permanently every year in Ireland, these present a significant

waste problem. Children permanently lose 13 possessions every year on average, equating to a staggering 13 million items lost per year in total in Ireland, many of which have a high plastic content. The study, which was conducted amongst Irish parents by leading name label manufacturer My Nametags found that toys are the most commonly lost

No other object in the solar system has that level of fidelity to its orbital solution even Earth!”

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Plant names can be confusing Common plant names really can be confusing… and one plant name which could not mean more different things to different people must surely be the ‘Lily’. If we take size, lillies can be the tiny ‘Lily of the Valley’ or convallaria, 15cm tall, to the stately ‘Himalayan lily’, or Cardiocrinum, 5m tall. Alphabetically, lillies can be the ‘Peruvian lily’, or Alstroemeria, or ‘St. Joseph’s lily’, aka, ‘Altar lily’ which is at the opposite end of the alphabet, being a Zantedeschia…. Confusing? Absolutely! When I think of lillies I automatically think of those found in bouquets, but even then, are they Stargazers - oriental lillies, Easter lilles - longiflorums, or tiger lillies - lancifolium? I am not writing this article in order to frustrate, rather to clarify and explain. Many people, when they ask a ‘straightforward’ question about lillies, are met with a perplexed look, and then the ‘smart’ question: ‘which type?’ So I will go through the broad groups in order to show that everyone has a different plant in mind when they say the word ‘Lily’! Most frequently people mean the Calla lily. These are the plants which have long, strappy leaves which appear directly out of the soil, and the ‘flower’ is truly a spathe around a spadix. A spathe is a coloured bract, a spadix is a spike of tiny flowers. A true calla is a bog plant with a white spathe, also known as bog arum. On the other hand, a true Arum lilly is also a plant with a spathe in either white or yellow, which gets spikes of bright red berries, and is known as ‘Lords and Ladies’. This plant prefers a well drained moist soil, at the side of run-

ning water is ideal. Arum lillies are often confused with ‘Altar lillies’ – which go by a host of other common names – the tall white lillies common in so many (older) gardens. These are easy to grow in moist soil in full sun. They are fairly hardy, but in case of a cold winter it is wise to cover them with a deep mulch in the autumn. Generally they are sold as small, almost unrecognisable plants in the garden centre, as they take a few years to mature to flowering. Their colourful counterparts, currently available in deep orange, bright pink, dark purple and cheerful yellow, are always for sale in flower, though they are smaller and less hardy. They benefit from being taken indoors in the winter or should be treated as an annual plant. These are often marketed as Calla lillies, but are actually Zantedeschia too. The large white variety is Zantedeschia aethiopica, leading to one of its common names, Ethiopian Lily, which then gets confused with the African Lily, which is in fact an Agapanthus africanus. These are the strappy leaved plants with the clusters of mainly blue flowers on tall stems, which are in flower at the moment. Agapanthus is a clump forming plant which prefers full sun and rich, moist soil. There are many varieties available, from ‘Blue Giant’ which grows to 1.2m tall and is very free flowering, to the tiny ‘Lilliput’ which grows to 30cm with purple flowers. I find the white, dark purple and mixed colours less hardy than the blue, so covering them with a mulch is advisable. I hope I have cleared up some confusion – however, next week we will delve a little further into the world of lillies!

Breen and Nagle impress in Belgium Craig Breen and Paul Nagle did their future career prospects the world of good with their superb second place finish on last weekend’s Ypres Rally Belgium. The Irish crew are without a full-time drive for next season as they are currently on a car-share programme with Hyundai Motorsport. Last weekend’s Belgian rally was just their fourth event of the year, yet they impressed team bosses by challenging for the lead on Friday and the early part of Saturday. They actually led the rally after special stage four on Friday evening. However, team orders came into play on Saturday morning and they were told to avoid racing teammates Thierry Neuville and Martin Wydaeghe. The positions remained the same until the rally finished on Sunday afternoon at the famous Spa-Francorchamps Grand Prix race way in Wallonia region of Belgium. It was their second time in as many events

that Breen and his Aghadoe co-driver finished on the second step of the podium following their success in Estonia last month. “It is nice to have two podiums in the same year. I don’t think I have done it before,” said Breen at the post event press conference. “Podiums help regardless. They help in every sense. For sure, it helps our cause and it puts us in a stronger position. Apart from anything, on the contract side, it gives myself and Paul confidence going forward. We definitely feel much more confident.” As a result of Hyundai’s car sharing policy they will sit out next month’s Acropolis Rally Greece – Spaniard Dani Sordo will drive the car there – but the Irish team look certain to be selected for October’s Rally Finland. Traditionally, Rally Finland is the point in the season where contracts for the following year are finalised and another good run there should see them secure a full-time contract in 2021.

Driving test backlog The COVID-19 pandemic has created severe backlogs for driving test waiting lists. Currently there are 64,544 people waiting to receive a date to sit their driving test of which 9,513 are deemed essential workers. There are also 116,000 people waiting to take their theory test. It is estimated that it will take anything up to 18 months to clear this backlog. At the present time the National Driver licence service have extended the validity of expired licences and learner permits as follows, Driving Licences that expire from 01 September 2020 to 31 October 2021 will be

automatically extended by 10 months in total. All Learner Permits that expired from 01 July to 31 October 2020 were automatically extended by 14 months in total. All Learner Permits that expired or are expiring from 1 November 2020 and 31 July 2021 are being automatically extended by 10 months. By way of example of the above, where

the date of expiry on the physical learner permit, which can be seen at opposite number 4b on the permit shows • 5 March 2020, the new expiry date is 5 September 2021. • 5 July 2020, the new expiry date is 5 September 2021. • 5 December 2020, the new expiry date is 5 October 2021. Please refer to www.ndls.ie for full details and expiry extension dates. From an insurance perspective a full licence holder can get better rates than a learner permit. This is especially true for younger drivers. At Healy Insurances we have negotiated discounts with a number of insurers once the learner driver has completed 12 lessons

Starting your mortgage journey In our last article we discussed the initial first step in the home buying process which was saving for the deposit. Step two in the process of acquiring your first home is applying for and securing your mortgage. Now that you have spent what feels like a lifetime scrimping and saving at every opportunity, it is time to take things to the next level. Securing a mortgage and buying your first home is a huge step in life and a big commitment, it is, after all, the most expensive item you are ever likely to buy. Before you acquire that house, you will have to go through the often drawn-out and daunting experience of applying for a mortgage. If this all sounds familiar and you are preparing to kickstart your journey of mortgage application and home ownership, here are some simple but

effective tips to help make the process less stressful and more successful. Have your research done. It may sound quite obvious but is important to know what you want and where you want it. Prior to commencing your mortgage journey familiarise yourself with the market in your local area, look at property websites/apps and agents listings, consider asking prices and more importantly sales prices in the area. Once you have an idea on where and what you want to buy you are ready to discuss with your bank or your mortgage broker. It is stating the obvious that saving is a huge part in preparing for a mortgage but it does not need to feel endless. The maximum one can borrow is usually 3.5 times your gross annual income. For first time buyers, the maximum loan is 90% of the total value of the home you wish to buy. What this means is you must be

able to show that you have saved the remaining 10%. For other borrowers, the maximum you can borrow is 80% of the value of the home you wish to buy or remortgage. Be prepared, there are a number of documents you can have ready in advance to help speed things along. These include your current account statements for the previous six months, any loan statements you may have and your last three consecutive payslips and salary certificated from your employer. Understand the different type of mortgages available. Most lenders will offer variable rate and fixed term rate mortgages. See what is best for you, pay particular attention to the interest rates being charged and the term of the mortgage. These are just a few quick points to help you on your mortgage journey. It is im-

portant to note that professional financial advice should be sought when discussing your mortgage from a qualified mortgage and financial advisor. If the traditional mortgage route does not suit your situation, there are other alternatives which we will look at in more detail in our next piece.

GAME ON - All-Ireland semi-final gets green light after GAA give Tyrone extra week - Ulster champions had pulled out due to fallout from COVID outbreak - Kerry County Board outline “over-arching wish” for game to be played

It was on. Then it was moved. Then it was off. But finally, after a dramatic turn of events on Saturday last, the GAA have confirmed that Kerry’s All-Ireland semi-final against Tyrone will be played on Saturday, August 28, two weeks later than planned. Tyrone GAA plunged the Gaelic football world into a state of panic when they announced at 1.11pm that they would not be in a position to field a team for the match, which was supposed to be staged tomorrow (Saturday) after Croke Park pushed the initial date back by six days to allow the Ulster champions time to recover from a COVID outbreak. “Having received expert medical opinion on the existing, and future health and welfare of the players who contracted the COVID-19 virus during the period of this last two weeks, and following consultation with the team’s management, this decision has been made with the greatest reluctance, and with deep regret,” an official statement read. This bombshell appeared to leave Kerry with a free pass to the final, but, following consultation with the concerned parties, GAA chiefs stepped in to confirm that the match had now been pushed back one more week. “This revised schedule has been finalised with the integrity of the championship in mind and to ensure that Kerry were not denied a semi-final outing,” they said. It is believed that Kerry’s willingness to co-operate was the key factor in rescheduling the crunch fixture for a second time. In a statement released on Sunday, Kerry GAA chair Tim Murphy said that the Munster champions were on board with the decision. "Following on from yesterday’s announcement by Tyrone GAA, I have met with the Kerry senior football management team and with other connected parties to discuss the matter in detail

and to issue a considered response. "Kerry is a proud GAA county, rich in the tradition of Gaelic Games which is deeply engrained in all our clubs and communities. Every All-Ireland title that Kerry has won has been hardearned after a tough competitive campaign and we expect this year to be no different. We empathise with Tyrone who find themselves in this situation as a result of COVID-19 but would also point out the resultant knock-on challenges that our team, management and supporters are encountering. "We find ourselves in a very difficult situation not of our making. We have explicitly followed all COVID protocols and we have taken every precaution to protect our players and management. The confusion and uncertainty surrounding our semi-final meeting with Tyrone has undoubtedly hindered our planning and preparation and has also been a very challenging time for our loyal clubs and supporters, many of whom had made travel & accommodation arrangements for next weekend. "Notwithstanding this and having considered every possible aspect of the situation, our over-arching wish is to ensure that the All-Ireland semi-final against Tyrone is played at the earliest possible opportunity. On that basis, we have conveyed our position to national GAA earlier today and now await their deliberations and decision. "COVID-19 has impacted hugely on everyone over the past year and a half and in the spirit of sportsmanship and collegiality, we feel that this offer will afford the National CCCC the best opportunity to arrive at an agreeable and acceptable solution in very difficult circumstances for all concerned." On Wednesday the GAA confirmed that the semi-final will throw-in at 3.30pm, with the winners taking on Mayo in the All-Ireland final on Saturday, September 11 at 5pm.

Flesk Valley girls take gold at Coastal Rowing Championships The Flesk Valley U18 girls crew came home in first place to take gold at the Coastal Rowing Championships, which took place at Inniscarra in Cork at the weekend. Coxed by Paul Burke, the crew of Elisha Leane (stroke), Eilis Mullane, Margaret Casey and Melissa Carroll put in a brilliant performance on Sunday to clinch gold for the Valley. It was a great day out for the club in general as the U16 and U19 girls and the U19 boys all claimed bronze medals in their respective competitions. In total, Flesk Valley took over 60 members to Inniscarra (the first event of its kind in two years due to COVID-19) with boys and girls crews competing at U14, U16, U18 and U19 level, as well as two adult crews in the mixed senior and pre-veteran men. Many of the club’s rowers were experiencing a regatta for the very first time. All involved agreed that it was fantastic to have a semblance of normality after such a long period without competitive rowing and the medals and positive performances by all the travelling rowers

was the icing on the cake for Flesk Valley RC. The club have expressed their gratitude to coaches Paul Burke, Chloe McCarthy, Neil Horgan, Roisín Rea and Donal Kelly for all their time preparing crews over the last few months, and also to all the other members who have given their time to help out with training. Flesk Valley would also like to thank all the club members and parents who helped out in any way over the last few days in Inniscarra, as well as John O'Sullivan for all his help in loading and unloading gear, towing the trailer, supplying the tent, catching boats, fixing steers. The club say the only thing John didn't do on the day was row! Finally, the club wish to thank Muckross RC for the use of their boat over the course of the weekend and to Callinafercy RC for lending them a third boat for two races on Sunday.

WINNERS: The Flesk Valley U18 girls who won gold at the Coastal Rowing Championships at Inniscarra. Pictured are Eilis Mullane, Margaret Casey, Paul Burke (cox), Elisha Leane and Melissa Carroll.

Liverpool’s Mo Salah, the most popular captain in Gameweek 1, was also on song as he scored one and assisted two more

Fantasy football superfan Shane Lynch leads the way in the Killarney Advertiser League after Gameweek 1. The local postman racked up a whopping 125 points, thanks in no small part to West Ham pair Saïd Benrahma and Michail Antonio, both of whom found the target in The Hammers’ 4-2 win over Newcastle on Sunday. And they say the mailman doesn’t deliver on Sundays… Paul Brennan is currently in second place with 122, Shane O’Connor is a point back on 121, and Aonghus O’Leary and Will Courtney (117 each) complete the top five after the first round of fixtures.

Can Cork topple Limerick Ahead of Sunday’s hurling decider, Eamonn Fitzgerald speaks to some prominent figures on both sides of the Cork-Limerick divide and asks the big question: who will lift Liam? What a shocker! Dublin were odds-on for an unprecedented seven All-Ireland football titles in a row, cruising with a six-point lead at half-time, and then that miraculous comeback by Mayo to level it up. In extra-time there was only one team in it as Dublin faded and Mayo lorded the exchanges, earning a well-deserved win and a place in the All-Ireland final. The big one on Sunday next is the All-Ireland hurling final. Surprise packet Cork had to go to extra-time to knock out Kilkenny while Limerick have waltzed though all oppositions to reach the final. They know that they should be going for four in a row. They won in 2018, were caught by Tipperary in 2019, won convincingly in 2020 and are clear favourites to retain the title in 2021.

DENIS KENNEDY

Earlier this week I spoke to Denis Kennedy, the quintessential Doon GAA clubman and former intercounty Limerick hurler, who said, “I often neglected the farming because of the hurling, but I have no regrets.” "The hurling now is at a professional level although we are still an amateur

organisation. In my days with Limerick (corner back in 1968) we lost most matches and none of the three of us in the full back line ever met or even talked to each other before, during, or after the match.” He is steeped in the traditions of the Doon club, which is nearly as old as the GAA itself. He was an outstanding corner back, wearing the number two geansaí for Doon at the same time as Ken Kennedy was hooker for Ireland wearing number two and consequently is better known countrywide as the 'Hooker Kennedy'. He was hooking every forward who dared to take him on, while his namesake was hooking the crooked ball back through the scrum via Moss Keane. He is in full flow now. “There is a very different approach now by managers like John Kiely. He has the players superbly fit, well prepared in strength and conditioning and playing like winners all the way. Look at the first 15; they are all six feet or taller, some up to 6’4”. I have noticed how many of them have put on muscle, not weight, since the start of the year.” He must be confident? "Yes, I expect Limerick to win, unlike my

days when it was either Tipp or Cork. We were the bridesmaid of hurling. This team play a lovely brand of hurling and you talk about the manager. He is fantastic and has a great way with people and the players. He is well used to it in his day job as principal of Abbey CBS in Tipp town.” Denis continues to give life service to Doon and, like Charles Kickham in Knocknagow, he does it all ’for the sake of the parish’. He is thrilled to see Doon players on this winning Limerick team. He concluded, "from Doon, Darragh O’Donovan will certainly start at midfield. Richie English will be the first choice back to come on and if they need a speed merchant in attack Pat Ryan is the ideal man. That’s three great Doon men, a fair contribution for a small rural club that has never once won the Limerick SHC. Yes, Limerick will win. “And one other thing, say hello to Noel Ryan, a great Doon man down with ye in Killarney. He’s a retired vet. Do you know that he won a minor Limerick hurling championship with Doon and the whole full back line were Ryans: the three Ryan brothers. Noel, the vet, was the captain. He is too humble to men-

tion that in Kerry where they are used to winning All-Irelands in football. Don’t forget to tell Noel that!”

JOHN MCCULLAGH

John McCullagh, the well-known Killarney retired GP, is a huge supporter of hurling in his native Cork and when I spoke to him this week he conceded that Limerick would be red hot favourites. "Of course, they are favourites and everyone expects them to win. However, I was greatly encouraged by Cork’s comeback to defeat Kilkenny. They are extremely fit and there is great credit due to Kingston, the Cork manager. He has brought them on a lot. As well as that they have great stick work and can hurl with the best. “They are going in as underdogs, but given a dry day, a dry sod, suiting the skilful hurlers, I won’t be surprised if Cork cause an upset.”

TED OWENS

Ted Owens has been close to the Cork hurling and football managers and teams for many years. He trained the football team managed by Billy Morgan and accomplished ultimate glory when he trained the hurlers to win the MacCa-

k in the All-Ireland final? rthy Cup in 1999, at the invitation of the then Cork manager, the peerless JBM (Jimmy Barry Murphy). Central figures on that Cork team were Donal Óg Cusack (RTÉ pundit), The Rock (Diarmuid O’Sullivan), Brian Corcoran, and Seán Óg Ó hAilpín. I spoke to Ted earlier this week and reminded him that Cork were once the kingpins of All-Ireland hurling, up there with Tipperary and Kilkenny. However, since his glory day in 1999, Cork have only won twice, in 2004 and in 2005. “Yes,” he replied, “it is a long time for Cork to be without the MacCarthy Cup and Limerick are hot favourites, but anything can happen on the day of an All-Ireland final. 1999 is a case in point. "Everything has to go right for Cork on the day. This is a very young team and Kieran Kingston was expecting them to mature into real contenders next year. He felt that they were in a stage of development improving all the time. Then they came from behind and beat Kilkenny. Nevertheless, they are in the final and will give it everything.” And what about Patrick Horgan, Ted’s Glen Rovers clubmate? “He has been crucial to Cork’s success.

He is an ace free-taker, even though some people will only remember the long free he missed to put Cork four points clear and bury Kilkenny. He is the highest scorer in the championship with over 10 points per game and what many spectators miss is his contribution in general play. “Full back Robert Downey is another Glen Rovers player. He’s a young man and a great performer. He had been tried by Cork at right half back, but we knew in The Glen that he was best as a central defender. He had a powerful game against Kilkenny and we look on him as the natural successor to Martin O’Doherty. It is strange the way things happen. Damien Cahillane had his appendix out and Cork were stuck for a full back. They moved in Robert to number three and he has delivered magnificently.” Does Ted think Cork have a realistic chance against hot favourites Limerick? “Don’t write them off. Remember, Mayo looked out of it, trailing by six points at half-time against Dublin in the football, yet they rallied to win in style. I give Cork a good chance, so long as they don’t try and play Limerick on their

terms. Every Cork team has a chance in an All-Ireland, even if the bookies have decided that Cork are rank outsiders.”

NO CHARGE OF NEPOTISM

Kieran Kingston (Douglas) has done a great job with Cork and took a big gamble against Kilkenny in not starting Shane, his son, winner of two Munster titles and two Fitzgibbon Cups. The optics could be misinterpreted. When Shane came on he scored seven points which won Cork the match. He will surely start him on Sunday. While I believe that anything can happen on the big day, Limerick seem to have all the aces. Big strong fit men, they move the ball quickly with proven stars in players such as Gearóid Hegarty, Aaron Gillane, Nicky Quaid, Barry Nash and Declan Hannon on board. I expect Limerick to win but Cork to lay down a marker for 2022.

THE MAYO CURSE

A penny for the thoughts of Paddy Prendergast in Tralee on Saturday evening last! He is the only survivor of the 1951 Mayo team, the last time they won the Sam Maguire and the “curse” that has followed Mayo teams since then.

57

It’s wonderful to see Mayo back in the final and in particular after the way they achieved it. It was a tough decision to take off Aidan O’Shea, Mayo’s most experienced player who has given great service over a long career. But it was the correct decision. The ploy of trying to find him with high balls into the parallelogram was slowing up the game. Once he went off, I felt that the younger Mayo players really came good and expressed themselves freely. Dublin, as ever, playing on the edge didn’t intimidate them. I was very disappointed with the referee. I am all for letting the play flow but when outright dirty tackles are left go unpunished the game as a spectacle suffers. There were blatant red card offences ignored by the referee including that dreadful tackle on Eoghan McLaughlin - breaking his jaw in two places. No action was taken by the referee. Unforgivable. I hope he is not appointed for the final. Both of the Small brothers should have been red-carded. The whole country was hoping for Dublin to lose, but they were worthy champions for six

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

For Kerry supporters, the Dubs’ demise is bittersweet IN TATTERS: Philly McMahon and his Dublin teammates were finally defeated on Saturday. What will be their legacy? Pic: Ramsey Cardy/ Sportsfile.

Dublin have been defeated. After six seasons of total and utter domination, the reign of terror is over. So why aren’t all Kerry men, women and children jumping for joy? I was at a friend’s wedding at the Great Southern on Saturday and I, along with many of my fellow guests, rushed from my table when I heard that Mayo were only down a couple of points heading into stoppage time. The match was being shown on a TV in an outer room and when Davy Byrne carried the ball out over his own endline to gift Mayo a chance at an equalising 45, roars went up from the Kerry contingent in attendance. Hennelly’s leveller was again greeted warmly, and as two dramatic periods of extra-time unfolded, we were all glued to the screen. Mayo held out for a famous win and we were all happy witness the scenes of celebration at the final whistle. You would want a heart of steel to begrudge Mayo their moment of ecstasy. But as the magic dust began to settle, reality kicked in. It should have been us. It should have been Kerry who ended Dublin’s run. As nice as it was to see Mayo beat Dublin, it would have been twice as nice to do it ourselves. It would be surprising if this one result precipitated a complete Dublin downfall; they have too many top players to simply stop being contenders. But if we look back in 10 years and realise that Saturday’s loss, their first in the championship since 2014, did, in fact, signal the end of that era, it will hurt that it wasn’t Kerry who inflicted the damage. That being said, Mayo suffered the most under Dublin’s rule. Perhaps it was only right that they should be the ones to stick the knife in. What, now, of Dublin’s legacy? Maybe it’s too soon to judge. As I said, per-

haps they still have more to achieve. It would take a brave or foolish person to say that a team with fantastic footballers like Brian Fenton (28), Ciarán Kilkenny (28) and Con O’Callaghan (25) don’t have another All-Ireland in them. The six-in-a-row team is its own entity, however, so how will they be remembered? The one word that springs to mind for me is ‘ruthless’. Never before has a team been so in charge of an era, so controlling, so heartless. There was talk in recent weeks that maybe they were getting bored of winning. By god, it took them long enough. Year after year they stood on the necks of their opponents, scarcely breaking a sweat. Or a grimace. Or a smile, for that matter. There was never room for emotion. They had a job to do and they did it. End of discussion. Another important feature of this outfit is that it was always a case of ‘team first’. Unlike great champions from bygone days, there was very little room for individuality. Prepare. Execute. Repeat. Robotic consistency. They are the only team to win six All-Irelands in a row. Does that prove that they are the best team of all time? You can certainly make that argument, although plenty in this part of the world will eat the head off you for saying it. Kerry under Mick O’Dwyer won one, then four, then another three. Is that more impressive? In fairness, even the biggest Kerry diehards have to take their hats off to the Dubs and Jim Gavin and Dessie Farrell. What they achieved over the past six years will never again be matched, let alone bettered. Well, we certainly hope not anyway.

Legion GAA FIXTURES: Friday August 20 at 7pm U12 girls Co League Legion ‘white’ v Southern Gaels Venue: Legion U-13 BOYS COUNTY LEAGUE Our U13 Green Team hosted Austin Stacks in a D2 County League encounter. It was the second meeting of these sides this year and once again the game was very tight with both teams having to work hard to create scoring chances. Legion playing with the strong breeze got a great early goal and netted a second time before the half time break to lead 2-4 to 0-3. With the wind at their backs the Rockies worked their way back into the game to trail by 2 points

with a few minutes left. They created what looked like a certain goal but James Murphy was brave and spread himself to stop the net bulging. Legion got two great scores to finish the game. U-15B Boys The legion under 15 B team had a well-deserved draw against Listry/Keel B’s away from home on Friday night on a score line of 5-11 to 5- 11. MINOR LADIES: On Friday night the Legion Minor Ladies played MKL Gaels in their final match of the Div 3 Co.League. The torrential rain resulted in difficult playing conditions in Direen. MKL Gaels started the game strong and at one point held a 15 point lead against the Legion Ladies. However, the Legion Ladies never gave up and with great teamwork and determination, Legion started to put scores on the board. This was a great team performance and by far the best performance the girls had in the league. The whistle blew at a score line of 7-05 to 7-08 to MKL Gaels. CONGRATULATIONS to our very own Keri-Ann Hanrihan who has been selected as Kerry Minor Captain. A huge achievement for a terrific player and great representation for Killarney Legion. Congratulations to Senior player Jonathan Lyne and Adrienne Brosnan who got engaged in the past week.

Killarney Valley Athletic Club The final weekend of the National Juvenile Championships in Tullamore was last weekend. Both Sam Griffin and Dara Looney competed in the U18 Long Jump. We will be taking a break from all training for the month of August to give our hard working and committed coaches a rest.

Listry GAA PITCH AND WALKING TRACK: Listry Gaa pitch and track are closed for the next 2 weeks due to works taking place.

This is due to health and safety as a lot of machinery etc will be used in the works. FIXTURES: Senior men will play Laune Rangers in the 2020 Mid Kerry senior league final on August 21 at 5.30pm at venue to be decided. Good luck to Beaufort PRO who has taken a career break. Cliona had many roles in the Club. As well as being P.R.O., she was a member of our senior ladies' team, coach and referee and was always willing to help with any task. We wish her well in her new role and hopefully she will return in the nottoo-distant future. HEALTHY CLUB: Beaufort G.A.A Club has achieved Healthy Club status for 2021 having completed Phase 4 of the G.A.A. Healthy Club Project. The Club has taken part in the Healthy Club since it opened in 2013. Hopefully, our Healthy Club activities will begin again in the near future. The G.A.A. Healthy Club partners are the HSE, Irish Life Insurance and Healthy Ireland.
