Brewery appeal withdrawn | By Anne Lucey Plans for a €24 million brewery and whiskey distillery, visitor centre and restaurant at Fossa, Killarney, will get underway in January - after an appeal to An Bord Pleanála was withdrawn.
BRAVE BOY: Thomas Howe (8), who is waiting for a kidney transplant, will feature on Virgin Media news bulletins along with his mother Olivia this evening (Friday). Photo: Michelle Crean
Aidan Forde, Director of Torc Brewing of Church Close, Muckross, had appealed plans by Killarney Brewing Company, to develop a micro-craft distillery, brewery, cask maturation area, exhibition area, visitor centre, restaurant, and parking to cater for coach and private cars at the old Rosenbluth office building at Killalee on the main Ring of Kerry Road, on the grounds of firewater retention. He has now withdrawn his appeal. Fossa may shortly see three new whiskey distilleries and visitor centres within a stone’s throw of each other. Less than half a mile away, the adjoining townland of Lakeview, the seat of the O’Connell family in Killarney, has al-
ready begun producing its first whiskey called ‘The Liberator’ in a 300-year-old complex that includes a bonded warehouse. And a third proposal for a distillery, this time by Killarney Distillers Limited, in a protected structure at Knoppogue in Aghadoe, Fossa, is also underway. A detailed application for planning for conservation and refurbishment of a derelict 19th century coach house at Aghadoe House as a craft distillery development will be finalised in late January, the Council said. A spokesperson for Killarney Brewery yesterday said site works were already underway and the project is to go "full steam" ahead now. Kerry County Council grant of permission lays down the restaurant must close by midnight. The brewing company, which has been operating since 2015 at a site on the Muckross Road, produces gin and beer with a number of new whiskeys planned when the brewing part of operation moves to Fossa.
A Killarney boy who needs a kidney transplant is one of several local people who will appear on Virgin Media’s main evening news bulletin tonight (Friday) promoting the Irish Kidney Association’s (IKA) Christmas campaign. | By Sean Moriarty Thomas Howe (8), will feature on the Virgin Media news bulletins along with his mother Olivia, as part of a national campaign by the IKA who are encouraging families to discuss organ donation when they gather for the festive season. The Howe family face an anxious New Year as they wait to learn if Olivia is a match for Thomas. “Christmas is a time when families gather and we want people to let their other family members know they are carrying a donor card,” Olivia told the Killarney Advertiser. “By just saying you have a
card can spark a whole conversation about organ donation.” Joining Thomas for the report, which was filmed in the IKA house in Muckross yesterday afternoon, is grateful transplant recipient and Transplant Team Ireland member Anna Pokjoska, a Killarney mother of one who underwent a kidney transplant in 2017. Just this summer she won a Silver and Bronze medal at the World Transplant Games. She also did the Ring of Kerry cycle earlier this year. “Anna is such an inspiration,” added Olivia from Barraduff. “Out of her adversity, came true strength of character.”
| By Michelle Crean Killarney town centre has seen the addition of its first covered bicycle stand at Bohereencaol Glebe to encourage sustainable travel. Earlier this year new bicycle stands were installed on Main Street, the Hahah, the Courthouse, High Street and at other identified locations around the town. These stands, while intended to encourage cycling in and around the town, have also had an impact in improving accessibility by reducing the amount of bicycles attached to poles. This project to encourage sustainable travel was funded under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme through South Kerry Development Partnership by the Department of Rural and Community Development. "I was delighted as Mayor to officially

Five star hotel potential for St Finan’s site | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
Cllr Michael Gleeson, Mayor of Killarney has received what he describes as “a very strong expression of interest” from a property firm that represents a five-star hotel group with a view to buying St Finan’s Hospital.

Lions Club help the needy Up to 80 of Killarney’s most needy families will get the help and support they need this Christmas thanks to the selfless acts of kindness by one local group. | By Michelle Crean For weeks now, Killarney Lions Club members have been busy buying food in local supermarkets to fill the hampers which will be distributed tomorrow (Saturday). Up to 24 members have also been very busy packing the hampers in shifts over recent weeks as not everyone in Killarney is equally fortunate, explained Ron-
an Doyle, who said the club have been carrying out the generous act annually for almost 40 years. “We bought all the ingredients over the last few weeks in teams wherever the best deals were,” Ronan told the Killarney Advertiser. “We’re doing up 80 hampers and each one is the same with basic items such as tea, coffee, sugar, pasta, jam, soup, gravy, cereals and some sweet treats such
Jessie Buckley in the running for an Oscar | By Sean Moriarty Her talents know no bounds – so it came as no surprise this week that Killarney actress Jessie Buckley has been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination. Jessie from Muckross made the Academy Awards shortlist for ‘Best Original Song’ for her performance of 'Glasgow (No Place Like Home)' in the hit film 'Wild Rose'. Buckley played Rose-Lynn Harlan, a Scottish single mother who attempts to make it as a country singer in Nashville.
It is one of 15 songs to make the shortlist and on January 13 this list will be further shortened to a list of four Oscar nominations ahead of the world-famous awards ceremony that will take place in the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 20 next year. “She has made the semi-final anyway,” her father Tim told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a big deal, from a dream as a kid to be suddenly in the running for this, it opens the dreamscapes for other kids.” An Academy member’s (music branch) vote will determine the last four, but if the song makes the cut, Buckley could
as biscuits and chocolate – all non-perishable items.” He added that they cannot do it without the help of the generous people of Killarney. Today (Friday), they are holding a street collection in town, Daly’s SuperValu and Dunnes Stores until 8pm, and are asking for everyone’s support. Also, at lunchtime they distributed 90 vouchers for Kennellys Pharmacy to the value of €10 each to all the ladies in Atlas House. “These ladies are part of Killarney town. It’s nice to give them something.” perform at the awards presentation that is watched by millions of movie fans worldwide. However, Tim warned that even if the song is successful, the writer Mary Steenburgen is the person who will go home with the coveted bronze gong. Big budget studios like Disney tend to dominate the awards but independent movies have been known to upset the status quo over the years. “Hollywood is a business, and the big studios tend to muscle in and doff their hats to the smaller outfits,” added Tim. “But the song has soul and people can connect with it.” Jesse herself is looking forward to a very busy New Year, filming for Netflix hit ‘Fargo Season Four’ will finish in January. She is also working on ‘Dr Doolittle’ with Robert Downey Jr and ‘Misbehaviour’, a comedy drama alongside Keira Knightly about the Miss World Pageant.
The site was once home to Kerry’s Psychiatric Hospital since 1852, but the entire building has been closed since 2012. Earlier this year the HSE announced it applied to Kerry County Council to build Killarney’s new community hospital. However, once construction is completed, there will be surplus lands and buildings on the site and Mayor Gleeson has been campaigning for a long time to ensure the site is used in its entirety for community or other projects. In November the HSE confirmed that there had been no other interest in the surplus lands from other Government agencies, and the lands and other buildings on the site are to be offered up for sale. Gleeson’s links with the site and his long term campaign means he is recognised as the ‘go to person’ in Killarney when the future of the site is up for discussion. As a result of this a property firm that represents a five-star hotel group approached Gleeson this week to enquire about the potential sale of the site. “All I could do was direct her towards the Property Section of the HSE,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I would describe it as a very strong expression of interest and while it is good news I remain disappointed that there was no interest from the Government to develop the site into much needed homes for the elderly or other community projects.”

With funds raised and a donation made by the Killarney Royal and Hayfield Family Collection, €5,000 was donated to Southwest Counselling Service. Southwest Counselling Centre, which has been providing affordable counselling services in Kerry since 1994, has a large team of counsellors offering both short and long-term counselling to children, adolescents and adults in Killarney
and its surrounds. “We are absolutely delighted with the turnout in support of Southwest Counselling Service,” event host and Hayfield Family Collection Communications Director, Claire Scally, said. “This is an extremely important service for those living in Kerry and we are delighted to sponsor this event and assist with their fundraising efforts and support the excellent work that they do.”

Smoky Coal ban to be extended to Killarney pupil got some admiring looks from classmates. “She was the centre of attention in school. Everyone was saying it’s such a nice thing to do.”
| By By Sean Moriarty Killarney is one of the 13 towns in the country no longer permitted to burn smoky coal – but the majority of residents are using smokeless fuel already. That’s according to one local supplier this week who confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that the majority of his customers are already using smokeless coal. On Tuesday Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton TD announced that the smoky coal ban will be extended to all
towns with populations over 10,000 people, and will come into effect in the town from September next year. Killarney’s inclusion on the list comes 16 years since a similar ban was introduced to Tralee. “I am extending the smoky coal ban to 13 additional towns based on the evidence of poor air quality with seriously damaging effects on health,” Minister Bruton said. A single bag of smokeless coal costs approximately €19. A bag of smokeless fuel costs €1 more than a bag of traditional coal with similar discounts available for bulk purchases.

Gladys Mteshani (77) from South Africa, Everlyne Mitto (59) from Kenya and Agne Zibaitiene (38) from Lithuania, attended a ceremony in the Church of the Resurrection, Park Road which was presided over by Fr Derek O’Connell. There they were baptised, confirmed and received their First Holy Communion. A party was held in the parish centre after the event where family and friends welcomed them into the parish community. “I grew up in a Catholic family and my
mom baptised by brothers and sisters – but she missed me,” Agne explained. “I baptised my kids last September and decided that it’d be nice for me too.” Gladys added that she liked the Catholic religion so much that she decided to change from hers, the Intern Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC). Everlyn said that she felt such love in the Killarney church. “When I went to the church here for the first time, I felt the love. It is much different, something I haven’t felt for a very long time.”
It is one of the most loved Christmas favourites in Killarney for the past 46 years - St Mary’s Cathedral Christmas Crib – and once again it hasn’t disappointed. | By Sean Moriarty A team of hard working volunteers come together every year to make it happen with the incredible, almost life-like display, admired by locals and visitors from across the country. The artist behind the nativity scene in the cathedral, Rena Kennelly, has been creating magic for 46 years and hopes “health and god willing” she will make the half century in 2024. The religious display wows every Christmas, but like everything else in life, Rena and other people behind the construction of the crib are finding it harder to deliver it each year without breaking some new rule or other. This year the crib’s floor will be mostly made from wood mulch instead of the traditional moss. In years gone by Rena and her supporters would gather moss in the National Park to use as floor material in the crib. However, since the discovery of rare spi-
ders in the park, as reported in the Killarney Advertiser last month, certain areas of the park are now out of bounds for the moss gatherers. “Since the creepy-crawlies are protected species we are not allowed take moss from anywhere near Muckross, the boatmen collect it from way further up the lakes now,” Rena told the Killarney Advertiser. The boatmen are just a number of people she refers to as “her team” – people from all walks of Killarney life that work together to deliver one of most loved Christmas favourites in Killarney. People like local builder Martin Walsh and local character Andrew Joy, better known for playing Santa Claus in the recent Christmas In Killarney events, are a great source of help to Rena. “The lads do all the hard work now and I just turn up and tell them where to put things,” she explained. “Fr Gearoid told me this year that I would have to go for the 50 now. It was great fun in the beginning and I have a great team now.”

Kerry roads to get €19 million cash injection | By Sean Moriarty The long-awaited and much needed Killarney to Farranfore road improvement scheme took another step towards reality when it was announced yesterday (Thursday) that €500,000 will be spent on design costs early in the New Year. The junction where the Tralee Road meets Madam’s Hill, a notorious traffic congestion black spot, especially during the morning rush hour, will get an additional €250,000 while the Lewis Road/Killarney Bypass Junction will get €250,000. The funding is part of a €19 million allocation announced for Kerry by Brendan Griffin TD with more funds for Kerry
roads in the pipeline. "This funding will add to great progress that has been made on Kerry's road network in recent years and the good news is that there is further substantial funding to come,” said Griffin. “I am working every day to help ensure that vital projects in Kerry receive the funding they need and the funding will address many pressing cases. There will be further funding announced in the New Year and I will be doing my level best to ensure that Kerry will do very well out of these tranches also." Other notable funding for Kerry roads includes €1.35 million for the N72 Rathmore to Forge Cross road and €4.8 million for the continued upgrade of N86 Tralee to Dingle road.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Fianna Fail has again failed to add a Killarney based candidate That Tralee councillor and teacher Norma Foley has been added to the Fianna Fail ticket in Kerry - the second female councillor to be added to Fianna Fail to contest the five-seater single constituency since last year’s convention - is surely a bold move by Fianna Fail.
HIGH AND DRY
But the step also leaves Killarney high and dry and this clearly shows how little the town and East Kerry means to any of the main parties. Norma F is a Tralee town girl above all. Kerry is on the periphery geographically – but also is “on the periphery politically” under what has been a Dublin centred Government, Norma Foley said on Tuesday morning. She is absolutely right. But she might have added, or
“
It leaves the premier tourist town, with its hugely important National Park, without any real clout
“
No party, particularly the Republican party (even if the FF subtitle is in very small print these days), could leave Tralee to Sinn Fein Pa Daly to clean out the vote that crosses all party lines in Tralee and in north Kerry. We in Killarney don’t fully appreciate sometimes just how “green” Tralee is whether it is the FG voter base or the Labour base, a sizeable element is a Republican vote. But the real risk of course is Norma’s selection will only serve to unseat near neighbour TD John Brassil of Ballyheigue. Although the possibility of Cllr Foley being added has been mooted for some months, it was thought unlikely because of the risk to Brassil. And there was also the unusual fact that both female candidates were “Norma” - not a common name by any means. Caution has now been thrown to the wind.
somebody must ask her to add, that in this count itself, Killarney and East Kerry are very peripheral politically now. It will be Norma F’s second run at the Dáil – in 2006 she surprisingly beat Brassil at convention in Tralee to get on the ticket alongside Thomas McEllistrim who took the 2007 seat. She has denied there will be rivalry with John Brassil, saying “we are a team”. But there is bound to be a turf war. And from what I hear the sparks have already begun.
FAILURE
While FF has again failed to add a Killarney based candidate, Fine Gael’s neglect is just as bad. They are almost certain to add the Listowel councillor Mike Kennelly alongside the mid Kerry junior minister Brendan Griffin who along with every other TD is also looking to Tralee to pull out the vote. The strategy by the two large parties to leave Killarney without a candidate
The rise and rise of Boris It would be remiss of this column not to offer the heartiest congratulations to Boris the Good! Like Santa Claus he has swept to victory no doubt with the full confidence that one journalist in Ireland in one small paper backed him! Being an eccentric is a lot nicer than all the other epithets the former journalist
and Mayor of London has had to endure in the Irish press. I will be watching out for other language changes because one thing the election of such a majority has underlined is how sick to the gills we are of over political correctness. Debate has been stifled and good people condemned for a bit of humour - as in Boris and the letterbox. He was being branded a racist which even a glance at
Cllr Norma Foley
means we are lumped with only the Healy-Raes, whether we like them or not. A senior Fianna Fail source told this columnist leaving Killarney without a candidate is deliberate, and is to ensure the Healy-Rae’s support in the deal for the next Taoiseach! So the concentration by the main parties on Tralee continues apace and both Tralee and Listowel can expect lots and lots of goodies in the run up to the election and its aftermath. Killarney and East Kerry is merely a pawn! It is quite incredible, and it would be funny if it were not so serious. Fine Gael could not even be bothered to ensure they elected a councillor and Fianna Fail could not care less about the place, it is now quite clear. It leaves the premier tourist town, with its hugely important National Park, without any real clout. There is no certainty the Healy-Raes will be in kingmaker position at all after the next election. And we will be back again to pot hole politics in Killarney, with the main Government parties and State funding agencies bypassing us again - racing to make announcements for Tralee and Listowel! his cabinet contradicts. There is such an examination of conscience in writing or speaking in public these days, not so much about the truth of anything but of who might be offended that sometimes one is barely able to report anything or say anything remotely humorous. I sense a change, and not before time. I sense a return of the courage of speaking honestly, robustly and humorously as they still do in France and the non-English speaking world.
A hotel is a great idea for St Finan’s Mayor Michael Gleeson, to give him due credit, has been pursuing St Finan’s relentlessly for the public. Alas it is to be sold, we know this from Michael’s questioning at November’s Regional Health Forum meeting. He has now been able to tell us this week that an agent for a five-star hotel has been in touch following the announcement that no public body wants the fine building. Now, a hotel is a marvellous idea and a perfect use for the magnificent structure with its unrivalled views of Killarney lakes and mountains. Even more importantly St Finan's prime position at the entrance to Killarney means also it will be the most viewed hotel in town! All week I have been deafened by the grand pronouncements by senior Council officials and their political admirers about the Council's new role in enterprise and tourism development, right up there with the big names in private corporations, one supposes. Quite a leap forward! Certainly in terms of salary and pensions and mileage rewards few in private work could compare with them. However, if they are so up there and out there why is it they couldn’t all come up with an idea for “an enterprise” for the fine asset of St Finan’s and draw down the grant aid. I can’t help suspecting if this building were anywhere else but in Killarney, the local authority would come up with plenty of ideas and assign plenty of personnel to draw down the State money to match them. I suppose we should be satisfied with what we got in Killarney - a revamp of a small building that was going to be knocked just a few years back. The awfully titled ‘Anam’ the great hall of culture with the leaning lights! Who came up with that name? A playwright has told me he can’t put on his play there - no one can, as you simply can’t darken the place! No leading lights so! Would Amadán be a more suitable name in that case?

Pupils bring festive cheer to Killarney town
| By Michelle Crean
Feel good festive cheer was felt across the town on Tuesday as children from one local school sang Christmas songs.
Pupils from Holy Cross Mercy School gathered outside The Laurels Pub on Main St and were warmly received by the public who gave so generously to their collection. It’s an annual event for the children as a fundraiser for the Kenyan Project which the school strongly supports through-
out the year, teacher Rhonda Healy explained. “Every year we do a number of fundraisers for the Kenyan Project which is run by the Sheehy family in Killarney,” Rhonda told the Killarney Advertiser. “Each teacher from Third to Sixth brought their class down on a rota to sing carols.
We were bowled over by the generosity of the public. Breda Courtney Murphy, a teacher in our school, is our Mission Coordinator and our Principal Ursula Coffey is a big supporter of the Kenyan Project.” The school also had the Memory Tree Mass in school on Wednesday which was very well attended, she added.
Calling all Killarney Great Southern Hotel staff | By Sean Moriarty Former staff at the Great Southern Hotel are organising a reunion of all those who worked at the landmark hotel up to 2006. ‘The Great Get Together’ will be held at the Dromhall Hotel on March 28 next year. An organising committee has been set up and Kathy Brosnan has been elected has chair. Originally from Sligo, she has been running the Applecraft Bed and Breakfast in Woodlawn for many years. Prior to going out on her own she worked as a waitress in the Great Southern Hotel from 1979
until 1985. “This just had to be done,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “In my time there it was like one big family. We are hoping to bring as many people together – that is why we called it ‘The Great Get Together’ – and it’s open to anyone who worked there before it was sold into private hands.” The evening will begin with a remembrance service followed by wine reception, dinner, music and storytelling. Tickets are €60 and available to reserve by emailing gshkillarneyreunion@gmail. com or by calling Emer Corridon on 087 1240046. “Tickets are strictly for past staff members, the event is not open to the public,”

Every year, Sixth Class pupils at the school organise a fundraising sale as part of their ‘Junior Entrepreneur Programme’ (JEP). Each pupil donates toys that they have grown out of or that they no longer need and they are resold in the school to raise funds for the project. This year the pupils received a larger than usual donation of toys and they were unable to sell them all at the annual sale. The decision was taken to donate them
to local charities but most local groups were unable to take them as they had already reached their requirements. School Principal Jerry Fitzgerald put out a request on Radio Kerry and as a result the Chernobyl Children International Charity will take the surplus toys. “There are seven or eight full sacks of toys, we got a lot more donations this year than other years and the Sixth Class pupils were unable to sell them,” Mr Fitzgerald told the Killarney Advertiser. “The children took the decision themselves to give the extra toys to charity. After publicising this on Radio Kerry we got seven or eight calls and decided that Chernobyl Children’s International Charity would get the toys.”
Holy Cross Mercy National School Killarney captured two awards in the 2019 Hugh O’Flaherty National School Essay Competition.
EXCLUSIVE
Chair of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society, Jerry O’Grady announced at the presentation in Killarney Library last Friday night, that in addition to one of the school’s pupils winning the ‘Individual Essay Award’, Holy Cross Mercy School also received the ‘Best Collective Award’ for the quality of the entries received from their fifth and sixth class pupils. The winner of the 2019 Individual Essay Competition was fifth class student Rowan Omean Al Salah. Rowan’s concise but powerful essay on why she considered Hugh O’Flaherty to be a hero and, how his example could be applied to today’s world circumstances was the unanimous selection of the independent adjudicators. “She is a star student in every respect,
very popular amongst her fellow students and the teaching staff,” Principal Ursula Coffey said. “Her commitment and ability to learn is remarkable - having arrived at the school only four years ago without a word of English.” The main sponsor of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society’s Annual Schools Programme is the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. “We are delighted to be associated with this wonderful event. Looking at the essay entries over the past few years, I can see a tremendous sustained awareness of humanitarianism and how it applies to everyday life,” Chamber President, Paul Sherry, said. “Students, teachers and parents can be very proud of the current generation.”
Mysterious local backs Killarney Micro Track | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney Micro Track project has benefitted from the generosity of a mysterious local business which will allow them to purchase a new state-of-art jump mat. The new track will have Olympic standard high jump facilities in an effort to help local Paralympian Jordan Lee pre-
pare for the European Athletics Championships in May and help him qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “This jump mat is world class,” said Jeremiah Griffin. “The identity of the business will be revealed upon installation of the mat.” Meanwhile a new gate will be installed in the coming days, sponsored by Keith Cronin of Torc Engineering.

BUSINESS OF WEEK THE
Facial Aesthetics at Kingdom Clinic A Vampire Facelift anyone? It may sound like something for the Halloween issue, but this latest facial cosmetic procedure is now available at Kingdom Clinic.
The name might not seem appealing, but the results are truly amazing! Kingdom Clinic in New Street Killarney opened for business in June of this year and is arguably one of Ireland’s most advanced dental clinics. The aim of the clinic is to positively change your view of dentistry. From the moment you enter the clinic, it becomes clear that every effort has been made to achieve that aim. What appears from the outside to be a regular, but modernised, New Street premises, opens up into a 4000sq ft architecturally appealing space. Wide corridors with floor-to-ceiling glazing and carefully selected furnishings create a calm and relaxing atmosphere not usually associated with a dental clinic. Margaret O’Connor is one of the dentists at Kingdom Clinic and offers a full range of dental services exclusively with
Margaret O’Connor.
sedation. She is also the facial aesthetic clinician at Kingdom Clinic. Margaret has many years of experience in the provision of facial aesthetic procedure in her previous clinic in Kent. So happy were some of her customers, that they now
travel from the UK to her new clinic in Killarney. Who knew that Killarney could also be a centre for dental tourism! Facial aesthetics is a rapidly growing industry, but it is widely accepted that dentists are best placed to provide this therapy. With their medical training, intimate knowledge of the facial anatomy and of course their vast experience with needles, you get a more comfortable and effective result. With Margaret you get this and more. Margaret has a Diploma in Dental Sedation and has worked in the Dental Sedation Department at Guy’s Hospital. So you are in safe hands whether she is working in your mouth, providing facial aesthetics or taking blood for that Vampire Facelift. So, what is a Vampire Facelift? Many of you who keep up with reality TV shows about a beauty-obsessed American family will already be familiar with the procedure. It is a totally organic skin rejuvenation therapy. It involves taking a sample of your blood and spinning it in a hematology centrifuge. This separates
your growth-factor rich plasma from the blood cells. The plasma is then injected under the very top layer of your skin with a high-tech U225 Plasma Gun. This naturally replenishes your skin cells, turning back the clock on your skin. The results are amazing almost instantaneously. Margaret also offers a full range of facial aesthetic procedures including anti-wrinkle injections, hair loss therapy and dermal fillers. You might think that all this comes with a hefty price tag. Think again. Kingdom Clinic has currently got some great offers on its facial aesthetic procedures. The Vampire Facelift is only €299, while a three-area anti-wrinkle injection therapy is only €225. Also, Margaret offers a free initial consultation. If you are interested in Facial Aesthetics, give Kingdom Clinic a call today on 064 7763010 or email reception@kingdomclinic.ie. You will be glad you did!

OPEN: At the launch of the official opening of ANAM - Killarney’s Arts and Cultural Centre were Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, Kate Kennelly, Angela McAllen, Cllr Michael Gleeson (Mayor of Killarney), John Purcell, Cllr. Cultural centre officially opened
The official opening of ANAM – Killarney’s Arts and Cultural Centre - was performed by Minister Brendan Griffin TD last Friday night. The project, which saw the complete refurbishment of the local-authority owned cultural centre on East Avenue, has resulted in the development of a flexible, adaptable and contemporary space, both internally and externally, which can host arts and cultural performances. The refurbished venue has an indoor seating capacity of 67 to cater for small events, but for larger events the venue can be re-arranged, utilising the auditorium as a stage area with outdoor seating of 131 seats. In opening ANAM, the Minister acknowledged the role of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and Kerry County Council, who, working together, have brought back to life an integral part of the cultural element of the town, which has huge potential to enhance the already excellent offering to visitors to Killarney, as well as the local community. “Killarney town and the wider Municipal District has a rich heritage in the arts,
both in terms of performance, music, dance, theatre and visual arts,” Cllr Michael Gleeson, Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District said. “For community, youth and local arts and drama groups to have an opportunity to utilise this space provides them with an outlet to showcase their talents to the wider community.” The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Niall Kelleher, acknowledged the funding from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Kerry County Council and stated that investment in the arts sector was vitally important for Killarney and for Kerry as a whole, allowing for increased participation in the arts in Kerry. He also thanked the staff of Kerry County Council, who managed the delivery of the project, Davide Mosca architect for the design concept, and contractor Jerry Brosnan Construction. The Arts and Cultural Centre will be managed by Killarney Municipal District Office, with queries and bookings to be sent to killarneyartscentre@kerrycoco.ie.

Kerry Clubs Fair to return this January The Kerry Clubs Fair, which held its inaugural event last year, is to return to Killarney Racecourse in the New Year. On January 26, from 2pm – 5pm the event, which is free and open to the public, gives adults in Kerry an easy way to find out about activities they can participate in and volunteering opportunities. The Kerry Clubs Fair is sponsored by Chapter 23 Kerry and West Limerick Credit Unions, and will again be organised by Killarney Lions Club. Over 25 clubs and societies took part in the first fair including Men’s shed, First Responders, Irish Countrywomen’s Association, Tidy Towns, Southwest Counselling, Ring of Kerry Cycle, Kerry Volunteer Centre, KDYS, Killarney Badminton Club, Girl Guides, Kerry Stars, Scouts, South Kerry Community Games, Laune Mountaineering Club and Killarney Musical Society. The aim is to highlight opportunities with up to 50 clubs and societies throughout the county. “Last year’s turnout shows that people want to find out about clubs and other
organisations that are active in their community,” Killarney Lions Club President, John Fuller, said. “We are hoping that this year we can expand our reach and attract clubs and individuals from all over the county. So if anyone would like to find out about activities that serve others in the community, or just want to get involved in something for fun or recreation, the Kerry Clubs Fair will be well worth a visit.” Killarney Lions Club is hoping that in addition to providing awareness about activities that adults can get involved in, the Kerry Clubs Fair will help improve health and well-being by encouraging inclusion of people from all backgrounds in their local community, addressing isolation and promoting the benefits of volunteering to people of all ages. Clubs and societies that are interested in participating can call 087 8343150 or email: killarneylionsclub@gmail.com

"The €1.3m being announced is just part of the overall package of supports
that reinforces the Government's commitment to Kerry Airport and the rural region,” said Griffin. "I continue to work closely with Kerry Airport, the airlines and all relevant partners in relation to retaining and strengthening existing routes and delivering new ones." The Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership programme, designed specifically for children with disabilities, is run in conjunction with the three local leisure centres in Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre, Tralee Regional Sports & Leisure Centre and Ballybunion Health & Leisure Centre. During 2019 the ‘Swim for All’ programme supported and encouraged 78 children, ranging from four to 15 years, and with different levels and range of abilities. To celebrate the end the successful year the children were presented with certificates and medals by the leisure centre staff followed by some treats
and tea and coffee for the parents. “It is great to see so many children throughout Kerry benefitting from this programme in so many ways and it is a joy to witness their progression in swimming,” Sinead Egan, Programme Facilitator with Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership, said. “This programme is only made possible through the positive collaborative work established between the leisure centres and Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership.” A new programme will commence during 2020. Kilcummin ladies are calling on the public to ‘think pink’ this January to help raise funds to help those with cancer in Kerry. ‘Pink Night’ is the seventh annual event organised by the Kilcummin Ladies GAA committee – and they’ve raised over €12,000 to date for various local charities. Now they’re ready to do it all again on Saturday, January 4 with an 8pm start in the Klub Bar Kilcummin. This year all proceeds will be donated to ‘Comfort for Chemo’ in their bid to build a much needed new chemotherapy unit in University Hospital Kerry (UHK) to ensure comfort for the people of Kerry, Carmel O'Riordan, Chairperson Kilcummin ladies committee, explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s always a fun night,” she said. “The Klub Bar Kilcummin will be awash with
pink on the night and as usual there will be a prize for the best pink outfit for ladies and gents. There will be live music followed by disco with plenty of party games, fun quiz and fantastic raffle prizes.” Admission is free with great door prizes on offer including weekend breaks, hair vouchers and much more. “Traditionally organised for Women’s Christmas ‘Pink Night’ welcomes everyone and indeed our men folk have been great supporters in the past. Cancer knows no boundaries and has struck a chord with us all. So gather all your friends and colleagues and come along for this usually enjoyable event.”

Rathmore publican helping those who need it most A kind-hearted Rathmore publican is re-opening his closed down pub so those in need can enjoy a proper Christmas dinner next week. | By By Sean Moriarty Jeff Gordon, who ran Connie K’s pub in the village, will continue a Christmas tradition he started three years ago despite closing his pub in May this year. His service to families and individuals in need will operate from December 23 until December 25. He will offer either a sit in meal in the pub, or a discreet collection and delivery service so those in who can’t afford to put a proper Christmas dinner on the table. Last year 19 people, ranging from elderly people to those living on their own and a family, sat down to Christmas dinner. His collection service, which will run this year from Monday through to Christmas Day itself looked after the needs of between 50 and 55 people. His delivery service run covers from Glenbeigh to Listowel and last year he either prepared or supplied the contents of 40 meals in that wide area. “The pub closed for many reasons af-
fecting rural pubs but there was no way my conscience would allow me to sit down to my own Christmas dinner without thinking of those we helped over the last three years,” Jeff, who offers a very discreet service, told the Killarney Advertiser. Last year he met a Glenbeigh woman at 7.30am on Christmas Eve outside the Red Fox Inn where he presented her with enough food to prepare a proper dinner. “By the time she got back to Glenbeigh she looked like someone who was returning from doing her Christmas shopping,” Jeff added. “I am trying to help those who are struggling, those who are doing their best to hold on to their house but with the additional strains of Santy they might not have enough money for Christmas dinner.” Anyone who needs help can call Jeff on 087 9534944 in the strictest confidence.

Christmas Holy Well Walk in Glenbeigh
The haunting and spine chilling sound of bagpipes will drift across the picturesque River Caragh in Glenbeigh this festive season as a lone piper leads a walk from the Red Fox Inn to the famed Comane Holy Well during one of the Christmas highlights in Mid Kerry. | By Con Dennehy More than 100 people are expected to put their best foot forward in the 8km fun event on Saturday, December 28 with all funds raised from the walk assisting the continued development of the Glenbeigh Handball Club. St Finian’s Holy Well has been part of the local community in Glenbeigh for generations and was widely acknowledged for its spirituality and healing power. “Over the years the area around the well became overgrown and virtually inaccessible. I decided it was time to honour and show respect to our ancestors and revamp the area,” said Pat Donovan, the founder member of the St Finian’s Well committee. With the invaluable assistance of the South Kerry Development Partnership and local volunteers, an extensive restoration programme commenced in 2013.
“More than 80 tonnes of stone, gravel and other materials were brought to the site in wheelbarrows. Weeds, shrubbery, briars and other unsightly material were removed and replaced with paths, walls and a grotto. The entire area was also landscaped. Today, this location on the Kerry Way is a tourist attraction and a place that people can come and remember their ancestors in a dignified and peaceful setting.” Following the renovation an annual Easter Walk was held from the Red Fox Inn to the Holy Well with over €60,000 raised for locally based charities and community projects. Registration for this year’s walk takes place at the Red Fox Inn from 12 noon with the walk commencing at 1pm and is suitable for all age groups. The entry fee is a modest €10 with refreshments and music in the Red Fox Inn after the walk.

Party on the double in Kilcummin! There was double cause for a party in Kilcummin on Saturday night as two locals celebrated their 21st birthdays at the same time.
40TH BIRTHDAY: John Paul Lyne enjoyed a surprise 40th birthday with family and friends in the Holiday Inn on Saturday night. Pic: Dylan Clifford.
It was a gas night for John Paul’s 40th!
One of John Paul Lyne’s favourite local haunts is the Holiday Inn on Muckross Road so in one sense it was easy enough for his brother David and sister Denise to convince him to go to his local on Saturday night. But he wasn’t expecting an army of friends and colleagues to be waiting inside for him as they gathered to celebrate the popular Pinewood man’s 40th birthday. John Paul is well-known around town, he operates the local Flogas service and his blue and white truck is a familiar sight as he delivers gas drums to almost every hotel and restaurant in the town centre. “Over 50 people were there,” his sister Denise told the Killarney Advertiser. John Paul’s life-long love of all things trucks was marked on the occasion. He was presented with a birthday cake which had a photograph of him after
buying a blue and white toy with his communion money all those years ago. As a child, every Friday, he would wait patiently for the gas truck to arrive in Pinewood. The delivery men would take him for a drive around the estate. This eventually led to a Saturday job and as life progressed he found himself in charge of one of the mainstay businesses in Killarney. After all these years, he still gets to drive his blue and white truck every day. He was joined on the night by his longterm partner Kathryn Somers while their three-year-old son Jamie shares the same passion for trucks.
Dean Cronin from Glounacopple celebrated getting the key of the door with his family and friends at the Village Inn. The local welder was joined by his mother Louise, father Paul and sister Rhea at the popular venue. “It was great craic,” his mother Louise said. “He said it was the best night he ever had.” Members of the local GAA club, former school mates and work colleagues from Killarney Welding joined Dean on the night. Little did they realise that there was a second celebration on at the same time. “It added to the celebrations and craic,” Louise said. Aisling O’Connor from Inch was the second 21st party to hit the Village Inn making it a double celebration for two local
families. Aisling was joined on the night by her fellow teaching students from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick. They came from Mayo, Offaly and Limerick. Her older brother Cormac and her younger sister Molly also helped her celebrate. “It is a busy time of year in our house,” said her mother Mary. “Huge thanks to the Cronin family, we never knew there was another party on at the same time but they organised the music and it was great. She was delighted to celebrate with all her family and friends.” Her aunt Catherine Igoe travelled from Galway and was joined on the night by another more-local aunt, Sheila O’Connor, and several cousins from Killarney and Mayo. Aisling’s late father Pat was also fondly remembered on the night.

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
How to reuse your Christmas tree! There is nothing quite like a real Christmas tree, be it pine, Nobilis or Nordmann firs. However, increasingly there is a question over the impact Christmas trees have on the environment. In Ireland, Christmas trees are grown on farms, where each tree is replaced by a new one when it is cut. As it grows it has a positive effect on the environment, and if it is mulched afterwards it can be used in the garden. On the other hand, artificial trees can be reused for years. Which is a good thing…. but a conundrum for me if I try to do the math on its actual carbon footprint – material manufacture, transport, effect on nature when it ends up in landfill – not to mind wondering about the working conditions of the people who made it… argh! So, the easiest thing for me to do is to have a live tree which I can use each year. I started
with some Nobilis firs, potted them up and used until they grew too large for the pot. They now grace the end of the garden and will have outdoor lights on them this year. Picea glauca conica is replacing it this year. It’s a slow growing conifer which keeps a beautiful cone shape naturally and will last me for years. Potted in a sufficiently large pot, live Christmas trees will be perfectly fine indoors over the festive season. Make sure your tree does not dry out. With conifers, once they dry out and shed, they are unlikely to recover. Also bear in mind that if your house is warm, the tree, thinking it is spring, might start to grow! And these new shoots might burn off in the cold when the plant goes out again. Keep in a sheltered spot until the weather becomes a little warmer again! Regardless of what type of tree you choose, I would like to wish all readers a joyful and peaceful Christmas.

The Christmasaurus By Tom Fletcher In this quirky Christmas outing, for ages 8 - 12, William Trundle - a dinosaur enthusiast who is being teased by a bully because he uses a wheelchairrequests a real dinosaur from Santa. Luckily, a single frozen dinosaur egg happens to have survived. Santa’s elves dig it up in the North Pole, and Santa reluctantly agrees to sit atop it – as his “bum” is the only one big enough. Out hatches Christmasaurus: a friendly creature with horns and a featherlike fringe around his neck. Christmasaurus - who doesn’t feel like he fits in among the elves, reindeer, and Santa - accidentally hitches a ride on the sleigh. Readers will guess that Christmasaurus and William are destined for one another - but first, a dastardly villain with a pipe and a pup intervenes. It's about discovering your heart's true desire and learning that the impossible might just be possible.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
Wild Atlantic Way roads to be upgraded in West Kerry The Wild Atlantic Way route in Kerry will undergo major improvement works as part of Fáilte Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way Congestion and Visitor Management Project.

Santa Claus is coming to town Santa Claus has read all the children’s letters which were posted over the past weeks and months and is on schedule to visit Killarney and its surrounding areas on Tuesday night. A lot of people often ask how can Santa visit every house in the world on Christmas Eve – it’s a big job but he never fails to pull it off! Science tells us he has more than 24
Trump CORNER
hours to make it happen. His journey will start in Russia and will end just before sunrise on Christmas Day on the other side - in Alaska. This will give him a total of 42 hours to visit half-a billion households and one of the reasons we never see him is that he is travelling at a whopping 5 million miles an hour. Many local children used An Post to get their letters to the big man who then con-
tacted the national postal service to say everything is going according to plan. “A big thank you to all of the children who have sent me lovely letters,” Santa said. “Mrs Claus and I have spent every evening reading all about your year and what you would like for Christmas. We love to get your news and your colourful drawings too.” The North Pole Post Office and Santa’s helpers wish you all Nollaig Shona.
President Trump third US president to be impeached Impeachment in the United States is the process by which the lower house of a Government brings charges against a civil officer of Government for crimes alleged to have been committed. The impeached official remains in office until a trial is held. This week’s vote to impeach Trump in the House of Representatives paves the way for a court trial in the New Year - but whelther it happens or not is another matter. The issue will now pass to the Senate,
the other body that makes up the US Congress, which will hold a trial on whether to convict and remove Mr Trump from office next month. But given the Republicans - Mr Trump’s party - hold the Senate majority, two thirds of senators would need to vote for removal so it is very unlikely to happen. Even so, impeachment creates a permanent black mark on Mr Trump’s political legacy that he shares with only two past presidents - Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.
The 50km stretch of the route is set to undergo infrastructural improvements at six key locations from Milltown Bridge to Clogher Head, taking in Slea Head Drive, Fahan Group Beehive Huts, Coumeenoole Beach and Ceann Sleibhe. The proposed works will improve public safety measures and alleviate traffic congestion and will include upgraded car parking and visitor facilities and additional signage. Funded by the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund as part of Project Ireland 2040, this Fáilte Ireland project, in partnership with Kerry County Council, will ensure the sustainable development of the tourism industry in the region.
Johnson, who served from 1865 to 1869, survived removal from office by one vote, his political legacy centres on the USA’s purchase of Alaska from Russia for a price of $7.2 million. Clinton survived two votes to remove him from office. During his January 1999 trial, where he faced two charges of lying under oath and obstruction of justice, 45 senators voted to convict while 55 voted for acquittal. On the second charge 50 senators voted to convict while 50 voted for acquittal, both failed to secure a majority vote. Clinton remained in office for the balance of his second term where he was best remembered, in this part of the world, as the one of the prime moves behind the Good Friday Peace treaty.

Killarney people help Australian farmers Two Killarney people are behind an aid project in Australia that will help farmers in Queensland whose lives and livelihoods are at risk as a result of a severe drought in their area.
Christmas 5000km apart For those living abroad, it can be difficult spending the most magical time of the year away from home, this is where the power of connection can bring joy to families, wherever they are in the world. One Irish family was able to enjoy Christmas dinner together despite being 5,000km thanks to the Connected Restaurant. This festive season, The Connected Restaurant, created by mobile phone provider Three, brought together families separated by the Atlantic Ocean.
Paul Mooney, from Limerick, has been living away from home in New York for almost a decade, something which really hits home at this time of year. Paul’s father Donie has been suffering from a rare form of bone marrow cancer. “He’s a marvellous man, and I miss him. I miss the two of them,” he said. The joyous reunion was captured on camera at Three’s Connected Restaurant as Paul, Tara and their 2-year-old daughter Maeve, shared the unique dining experience with Paul’s parents. “I feel as if we’re at the same table,” Paul’s mother said.
On Wednesday, Australia recorded its hottest day and temperatures are expected to soar even higher as heatwave conditions embrace most of the country. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said the average temperature across the country of 40.9C on Tuesday beat the record of 40.3C from January 7, 2013. As a result of drought conditions farmers near the town of Stanthorpe, about three hours southwest of Brisbane, are living on 80 litres of water a day, some are not showering just to give their cattle a drink of water. A group of Irish ex-pats, now living in Brisbane, including husband and wife Richard (Gneeveguilla) and Louise Lenihan (nee O’Donoghue, Ballycasheen), and their friend Kieran O’Brien from Mayo,
have organised 70 Irish owned trucks to deliver much needed supplies to the affected region. They will set off tomorrow (Saturday) and will deliver over $110,000 Australian Dollars-worth of feed and water to the farmers. Santa will also be on hand to help the volunteers and there is even a supply of Tayto in the consignment. “We are bringing in excess of 150,000 litres of drinking water and 300,000 litres of stock water and at least 40 tonne of animal stock feed,” Louise told the Killarney Advertiser. “Drinking water and animal stock feed alone is worth over $110,000 Australian Dollars. That’s not including stock and potable water which at this stage we cannot keep count. The support has been absolutely amazing. This supply will bring so much relief to the farmers this Christmas. Afterwards the convoy are going to celebrate with a get together at O’Meara’s bar in the centre of town as we have the whole venue booked out.”
HELPERS: Richard Lenihan (Gneeveguilla) and his friend Kieran O’Brien (Mayo) are the organisers of the project.
DROUGHT HEROS: Richard Lenihan of Tournanough, Gneeveguilla and Louise Lenihan, are the organisers of the project.
Pop up confessional It seems the priesthood is no different to other professions and men of the cloth need to keep up with the times to ensure their future. This time of the year is often punctuated with discussion about the increasing lack of religion at Christmas. It is just too commercial is what is said these days. And with the people of Ireland more likely to flock to shopping centres than churches, one bishop had to act.
The Bishop of Killaloe Fintan Monaghan and a team of 20 priests set up confessional boxes in the Skycourt Shopping Centre in Shannon, Co. Clare. The 'Mercy on the Mall' project is taking place this Christmas for the third year in a row. The Bishop promises that his team will make themselves available throughout the shopping centre for "a confession, a chat, a blessing, or a prayer".
Gardai warn of dangers of scramblers and quad bikes An Garda Síochána are this week warning about the dangers associated with children and young teenagers being gifted quad bikes and scramblers this Christmas.
MALL MERCY: A team of priests have set up a pop up confessional service in the Skycourt Shopping Centre in Shannon, Co. Clare.
In the last few years, there have been a number of people killed or injured in collisions involving a quad bike or a scrambler on public roads, incidents which involved children under 18 years of age. These vehicles are unsuitable for children and young teenagers and could cause life-changing injuries. "Members of An Garda Síochána do not want to be delivering devastating news to another family this Christmas so our message is clear; children and
young teenagers should not be driving these vehicles in public, or without the necessary licence, insurance, safety equipment and supervision," Chief Superintendent Paul Cleary of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said. An Garda Síochána also wish to highlight the fact that some youths on scramblers have been linked to anti-social behaviour in parks and public areas. This illegal and anti-social use of scramblers and quads poses a serious safety hazard, and a potential to cause fear and intimidation in communities. Gardaí will have a visible presence in highlighted locations and will be enforcing the Public Order Act and the Road Traffic Act.

Skincare for the New Year ahead
It’s that time of year where we overdo it on everything, so make sure this year to add in the skincare routine. With a little bit of time off over the Christmas take some time to overdo your skin routine. Spending days in the pjs means leaving make-up off .... and plenty of time to re-energise the skin. Applying a mask at home once a week does wonders for your skin. Try to spend at least 10 minutes exfoliating first. It’s always better to do the exfoliating process at the sink and give it time to work. Use all those beautiful products that you purchase this year or all those lovely skincare gifts you hopefully get this Christmas. If you feel like treating yourself, there are loads of gifts in our studio with half price serums and great offers on all skincare giftsets. I always remind people that once you open a bottle it’s important to use the
5
older ones first as the goodness can start to reduce. It’s also a good time to reorganise all your products before you open all those lovely Christmas gifts. At the back of your bathroom presses or dressing tables we all have fabulous products that we have been keeping for a special night out or event. Now is the time when you have a few extra days off to pamper yourself and those around you. I usually move back to my mom’s for a few days over the holidays, and if I’m putting a mask on I’ll call my mom, sisters-in-law, cousins - whoever is staying over, and pop it on them too. Call skin coach Jill for a consultation now or in the New Year on 064 6632966.

Bikers ride The Ring for charity
Bikers from Killarney and Tralee turned out in force for the annual Charity Christmas Bike Run along the Ring of Kerry on Sunday to raise money for St Francis Special School in Beaufort and Mount Eagle Lodge in Tralee. Close on 70 bikes took part in the run which finished with a parade of motorcycles on the streets of Killarney. The first group left Tralee around 10am for the first official stop of the day at Sheahan’s Centra on the Muckross Road. There they were met by the Killarney contingent before setting off around The Ring the wrong way around. They travelled to Sneem via Moll’s Gap for the second stop of the day before heading to Glenbeigh before a final regroup at the Liebherr Container Crane factory in Fossa ahead of the parade on Sunday evening.
Local garage owner Johnny O’Sullivan took part in the run for the first time with his son John as a pillion passenger. He used his Harley Davidson Tri-Glide Ultra for the event. “It was my first time doing this, I have done ride-outs during the motorcycle festival in the summer but this was very enjoyable and a great buzz,” said the former rally driver. “Riding the Harley up Moll’s Gap was like trying to steer a rally car without power steering.” The event concluded with a meal in Scott’s Hotel followed by a social gathering in The Shire.

“Just tell me what to do and what to eat” - this is something I hear all the time from new clients. I can only empathise as every day we are bombarded with information on what “not to eat”, or “eating this removes belly fat” - don’t get me started on this one! It’s not because you don’t really know what to eat, ie: pick up the spinach - it’s the not so obvious choices that cause confusion. Certain foods become demonised, then hailed as the greatest health wonder, and then back to demonised! Over and over I get asked: are potatoes good or bad, what about eggs, can I eat pasta and is cheese ok? To add to the confusion, it’s not always obvious how to classify a food. Is it mostly protein, a carbohydrate or a fat? Many people know to eat a mix of these macronutrients, yet aren’t sure how that looks in “real food”. The result: more questions. Stop thinking of food as “good” or “bad”, it’s neither - it’s food. Stop referring to certain foods as “treats” - you are not a dog. Your first task when looking to lose weight is to stop over consuming food. In over 95 percent of cases this is the reason you are overweight. It’s probably not hormones, or genetics, or your metabolism. It’s eating more calories than you require. When working with a nutrition coach don’t expect a list of “approved” and “off-limits” foods.
Instead, you should think of foods on a spectrum from “eat more” to “eat some” to “eat less”. This approach promotes one of the most crucial philosophies that runs through our coaching method that I mentioned last week: progress, not perfection. I have come across too many people damaged by 12 week meal plan templates. Knowing what to eat is only half the battle, the other half is keeping yourself accountable. This is where a nutrition coach can guide you with long term, sustainable ways and means to navigate the confusion that is out there and come up with strategies on how to incorporate your preferences into your individual lifestyle. Week 4 Action Items: • Find out how many calories you require daily based on details you can input to an online calculator such as www.myfitnesspal.com. These are not always accurate but can give you an idea, for a truly accurate and scientific way check out our In-Body scanner at Activate. • Track your calories consumed for a week using MyFitnessPal App. • Compare your daily required calories against your consumed. This is not meant to instil a use of tracking Apps as a long term solution, but merely as a means for you to see what you are consuming, then you can accurately assess yourself, analyse your patterns and eventually make changes. • Move more this week, get out and go for a walk/jog/cycle, enquire about that class you have been thinking about starting do not wait until January 1!

Christmas jumpers a-plenty were in evidence by hosts, staff and attendees alike, with Christmas carols adding to the fun of the day, culminating in a visit from the man himself, Santa Claus! “We are delighted with the local support for this charity event in aid of St Francis Special School,” Claire Scally, Communications Director for Hayfield Family Collection said. “I was so impressed by the amazing work that is done at the school and we are very humbled and proud to support this outstanding charity. I am also very proud of our team at Great Southern.”

Killarney Celtic nets a car winner in FAI National draw Lucky winner Tom Long was overjoyed to learn he’s the proud winner of a new Ford Fiesta in the FAI National Club Draw.
Nissan’s mobile Christmas tree Nissan has converted one of its popular Leaf electric cars into a self-charging Christmas tree. The Christmas car features a spectacular festive light display, powered entirely by its own regenerative braking energy system. Two driving functions provide energy regeneration in the Nissan Leaf. The car’s e-Pedal allows the driver to start, accelerate, decelerate and stop using only the accelerator pedal. The e-Pedal also helps the car harvest energy via regenerative braking. This works by recycling the energy from the movement of the car during braking or deceleration, which then goes straight back to the batteries, where it is used to recharge the cells. Meanwhile, B mode is a driving function that regener-
ates energy under braking, with drivers using the traditional brake pedal as normal. Fitted with thousands of LEDs, shimmery baubles and a reindeer, the Leaf Christmas Tree is brighter than Rudolph’s nose. “Santa shouldn’t be the only one with a festive mode of transport. We wanted to make the Nissan Leaf more fun at this time of year while driving home a very important message,” said Helen Perry, head of electric vehicles for Nissan Europe. “We hope this custom-made vehicle inspires people about the benefits of regenerative energy. After nearly 10 years since Leaf was first introduced in Europe, Nissan continues to be fully focused on providing consumers with a more sustainable lifestyle through electric mobility.”
Tom’s winning ticket was purchased at The Killarney Outlet Centre where for the last number of months members from Killarney Celtic FC and Killarney Celtic Football for All have been selling tickets to raise funds for the club. Tom, originally from Inch and now living in Roscommon, bought five tickets and won the car in the Munster section of the draw. He also had another winning ticket which he had allocated to his sister who won two tickets to an Ireland game at the Aviva Stadium.
“I can’t believe my luck, I was on a visit to Killarney saw the car draw and thought I’d chance my luck,” he said. “I am over the moon with my win and am grateful to Killarney Celtic FC and the FAI.” The FAI National Club Draw is an annual draw that assists grassroots clubs with their fundraising efforts. The prizes are provided by the FAI through the generosity of their sponsors and clubs can retain a substantial percentage of the money raised to invest in developing their programmes. Mike Lyne, Director of Football at Killarney Celtic, congratulated Tom on his win and thanked all the people who supported the draw.

COUNTY CHAMPION: Paul Nagle, with his sponsor Michael O'Mahoney and driver Craig Breen at the finish ramp of the Rally of the Lakes in May. Nagle will collect his County Championship medal on Saturday night next (December 28). Picture: Eamonn Keogh
Busy festive season for motoring fans Motoring enthusiasts in Kerry will have plenty of events to keep them occupied over the festive period. On Friday (December 27) the annual Reindeer Run classic car run will set off from Ashe’s Bar in Camp and will follow a route along the Dingle Peninsula before returning to the popular venue later that evening. The run gets underway at 11am and all vehicles are welcome. “The more unusual the vehicle, the bet-
ter,” said organiser Martin Quirke. Motorsport enthusiasts in the county will be out in force on Saturday night (December 28) as the annual awards do for the Moriarty’s Centra ‘Kingdom of Kerry Championship’ takes place in The Anvil Bar in Keel. Tralee driver Darren Young and Killarney co-driver Paul Nagle will be main award winners on the night. Championship organisers will also present the Paudie Casey Trophy Cup to the person or persons who have gone
beyond the call of duty during the 2019 season in the county. “The winner of this award is a closely guarded secret but I can assure that this year’s recipient is more than deserving,” said championship sponsor Mike Moriarty. “If you want to find out who the winner is you need to be in The Anvil on Saturday night.” There are two very different events taking place, at opposite ends of the county, on Sunday (December 29). Tralee Racecourse will host a fun rally sprint event for rally cars and racing buggies in memory of Denis O’Brien, one of the best-known rally competitors who died suddenly after an illness earlier this year. International rally driver, the late Russel Brookes who died in October, will be remembered with a classic car run in
his name on the same day. This run will follow famous Circuit of Ireland and Rally of the Lakes stages, roads the British champion rated as the best in the world. “This event is for anyone in the South Kerry and West Cork areas over Christmas, a very special car run has been organised from Helen’s Bar in Kilmackillogue, which was one of Russell's favourite pitstops right in the middle of one of Ireland’s best rally stages where he used to relax with friends old and new,” said organiser Sean Hurley, who is one of those friends. “We put this event together to bring your rally, classic, vintage or road car through the classic Healy Pass, Cods Head, Ardgroom and Kilmackillogue stages which Russell knew and loved so well. It is a non-competitive run on open roads, any make or model, all in Russell's honour.”

In loving memory of Con Randles, Muckross Road, Killarney Who died on 17th of December 2010.
Death leaves heartache No one can heal, Memories are treasures No one can steal.
When you lose someone special, The hurt is hard to hide, When it is your husband, The hurt goes deep inside.
Some may forget you Now that you are gone, But we will remember No matter how long.
The day that we were married, They told us we were one, But they never told us what to do, When half of one is gone.
You will always stay loved and remembered, In every way, No tears, no verse, can ever say How much we miss you every day.
What do you do with half a heart, Now the other half is not there, You were the other half of me, A life linked to my own, What do I do with half a life, Now that I am on my own.

1ST ANNIVERSARY
No farewell words were spoken, No time to say goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why.
Don’t weep for me my friends When I am gone to rest. Bring no flowers from a hot house For the wild ones I love best.
Our hearts still ache in sadness, And secret tears still flow, What it meant to lose you, No one can ever know.
Bring me a garland of freedom flowers Growing wildly on the hills A delicate rest of primroses, a bunch of daffodils.
But now we know you want us, To mourn for you no more, To remember all the happy times, Life still has much in store.
From the hedgerow as you pass pick me a slip of wild woodbine And from the woodlands that had my heart a bunch of bluebells fine.
Since you’ll never be forgotten, We pledge to you today, A hallowed place within our hearts, Is where you’ll always stay.
Rest them on a nest of ferns of the finest green Then you have brought to me my friend, a garland for a Queen.
Always loved and remembered by Michelle, Denis and Grace.
Dearly loved and sadly missed by your sons, daughters, daughters-inlaw, sons-in-law, brothers and sisters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

CHAMPIONS: Legion celebrate their historic six-point victory over Dr Crokes. Pic: Seán Kelly.
WORTH THE WAIT | By Adam Moynihan
Legion end 43-year drought with convincing victory over Crokes The Killarney Legion are champions of East Kerry for the first time since 1976 after a rousing 1-18 to 3-6 victory over their fiercest rivals, Dr Crokes, in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday.
past seven years. When the final whistle finally blew, the relief was palpable as supporters flocked onto the field to congratulate their heroes. One refrain was constant above the din: “Lads, it was a long time coming”.
A stunning start to the second half was key as the Legion doubled their half-time advantage from five to 10 and although a couple of late Crokes goals made things nervier than bainisteoir Stephen Stack would have liked, the men in green and white were more than good value for their historic win. The club from Derreen have suffered a number of agonising defeats in recent times including no fewer than four East Kerry Championship finals in the
Legion were in electrifying form from the off and with Cian Gammell, Jack O’Neill and Darragh Lyne on top form and star player James O’Donoghue pulling the strings in the final third, they dominated proceedings from start to finish. Stephen Stack’s side led by five, 0-9 to 0-4, at the break and an incredible opening seven minutes to the second half saw the underdogs increase their
ELECTRIFYING
advantage to double digits. Dr Crokes battled hard to close the gap and defend their title but goals by Mark O’Shea (two) and Johnny Buckley counted for little in the end as 1-4 from substitute Tom Moriarty propelled the Legion to a historic sixpoint win. Speaking exclusively to the Killarney Advertiser, Man of the Match Kieran Slattery, who was named amongst the substitutes but started for Legion at half back, said it “means a lot” to the players to finally get over the line. “It’s great to finish the year on a positive with some silverware to show for all our work,” he said. “Hopefully it’ll give us a platform to build on for next year and win a few more trophies.
“It’s also nice to see how happy it made all the people who taught us to play football from the time we started out as kids above in Derreen.” Unfortunately for Dr Crokes, Sunday’s result caps a disappointing campaign which also saw them lose the All-Ireland Club final, the Club Championship final and the County Championship final. Remarkably, this will go down as the first season since 2003 that their senior footballers failed to bring a major trophy back to Lewis Road. But this particular final was all about another talented group of Killarney footballers and for Legion on Sunday, the famous seanfhocail that tells us ‘an rud is annamh is iontach’ finally rang true.

The famine is over but do Legion want a feast? | By Adam Moynihan
If one person said it to me in Linehan's on Sunday night, 20 did. “I’m looking forward to the Advertiser on Friday.” Unfortunately, since I started writing a couple of years ago, my clubmates have become accustomed to reading articles of mine that are dedicated to dissecting Legion’s defeats at the hands of the Crokes. After last Sunday’s long-awaited O’Donoghue Cup final win, this edition might be a bit more enjoyable for them. From my own perspective, I obviously do my best to leave my allegiances at the door when I come to work but it can be tough to write about your own club getting beaten. These are fellas I’ve played and trained with, fellas I’d call my friends. The last thing I need on a Monday morning is to be poring over another high profile loss. I played a small bit last summer and
when I got injured I was a maor uisce for the County Championship quarter-final against Crokes. They absolutely hammered us. It was a really demoralising defeat for the lads and watching it up close and personal was a rough enough experience. And then I had to come into work the next day and write 700 words about it. Good craic. But look, that’s part of the job. This week really has been good craic, though. The final whistle was special but the highlight for me was arriving into Linehan's on Sunday evening and seeing so many familiar faces smiling from ear to ear. I was so happy for the older stock, many of whom volunteered countless hours of

their time to coach the current players throughout their formative years. You could see it in their eyes how much it meant to them to finally get over the line. The same goes for the club officers past and present and all the former players who never got to sample a victory like this one first hand. But above all else, I was delighted for this current crop of players. To have suffered so many tough losses, particularly in finals, and to keep coming back for more shows incredible resilience and wherever your loyalties lie, you can’t help but admire a team that just refuses to give up. After 25 lean years (43 at district level), the famine is over. The question now for Legion is, are they happy with a bite to eat or do they want to feast? In situations like this, the hunger can subside fairly quickly if you’re not careful. It’s very easy
to rest on your laurels and say, “we did it”. Personally, I can’t see that happening with this Legion team, especially with a man like Stephen Stack at the helm. You could see by his reaction at the final whistle and his demeanour with his players that he has already bought into the club. And, more importantly, the players have bought into him. Of course, there’s no guaranteeing that Legion will go on to win more silverware. The competition in Kerry is fierce. But the drive will be there and now that they’ve ended their unwanted streak of heart-breaking defeats in big finals, the belief should be there too. Dr Crokes will have plenty to say about it, as will East Kerry and Austin Stacks and others, but Legion fans will be hoping for more good news stories in these pages in the months and years to come.

Legion dominate Crokes to win first O’Donoghue Cup since 1976 Legion were crowned champions of East Kerry on Sunday when they defeated fellow town rivals Dr Crokes and their victory was more emphatic than the scoreline indicates. | By Eamonn Fitzgerald Fresh and eager for success after so many barren years, they dominated this game from the start in all departments and never surrendered supremacy throughout this eagerly awaited contest. In contrast, the Crokes had to play second fiddle and with so much mileage on those legs over a the course of a glorious decade which brought them so much success at local, county and national level, they had to bow to a superior force on this occasion. Legion won the crucial midfield battle, their defence was tenacious and sure in the tackle, and they had the players up front capable of running up a match-winning score. Tony Brosnan and Micheál Burns, Dr Crokes’ usually high-scoring forwards, were well contained by two superb Legion defenders, Cian Gammell and Kieran Slattery. The latter started at wing back instead of Denis Sheahan and was a deserving winner of the Man of the Match award. The writing was on the wall for Dr Crokes at half-time when they trailed by four points to nine and a splendid opening spell after the restart, which yielded Legion points from Jack O’Neill, Tom Moriarty, Conor Keane and chief playmaker James O’Donoghue, increased the winners’ lead to 10. The Crokes’ revival was expected, but never materialised. It was a proud moment for captains Pádraig Lucey and Damien O’Sullivan to raise the cup which has eluded the
Legion since 1976. Legion were in the mood to celebrate, making up for what Lucey said were their many low days. He did not forget to remember two great Legion men who have departed this world, Weeshie Fogarty and young Niall McGillicuddy. It was fitting that a daughter of Dr O’Donoghue was present with her sisters to present the coveted trophy. Dr O’Donoghue was a former player with the Legion and president of the East Kerry Board at the time of his untimely death on January 4, 1948 at the age of 47. The present competition is sponsored by the Aquila Club and Dr O’Donoghue’s family. Congratulations to the Legion bainisteoir Stephen Stack, trainer/coach Pat Flanagan, selector Tomás Lyne and the essential backroom team. Disappointment for the Crokes, but they are coming off a decade of unequalled success.

The East Kerry Board realise that coming
up to Christmas is not the time for the final of your most prestigious competition and for next year the objective must be to get the final back to September, where it was thriving for so many years. You have less chance of a red alert and postponement and the shorter season would be welcomed by players and those in charge of teams. I wish to congratulate the board on the production of a splendid 32-page, full-colour programme. Great work done here by the production sub-committee and nice to see tributes paid to two outstanding GAA men, the late Johnny Batt Cronin and the late Dermot Moynihan, who served their clubs and the East Kerry Board with such loyalty and dedication when their playing days were over.

Showtime Lakers turn on the style
89
Saturday marked the Scotts Lakers’ final home game of the calendar year and they signed off in style with a superb 19-point win over the Limerick Celtics. NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 1 __________________________________________________________________________________
Scotts Lakers
125 | Limerick Celtics 106
KILLARNEY SPORTS CENTRE
| By Adam Moynihan Limerick were victorious in the reverse fixture on opening night but they encountered a much different outfit this time out as the Killarney club secured three crucial points in their quest to earn promotion to the Super League. The result leaves the Lakers third in Division 1, just one win behind Fr Mathews with 10 games remaining. Leaders Ballincollig are still undefeated so it appears as though the Lakers and Mathews will be fighting it out for second, and a spot in the league final, in the New Year. If Saturday’s performance is anything to go by, local basketball fans have every reason to be optimistic heading into 2020.
THREES
The Lakers flew out of the blocks against the Celtics and experienced shooting guard O’Neill drained three early threes to help establish an 11-2 lead. When Aaron Jackson got up for a spectacular dunk moments later, the Lakers were rolling. Danish forward Tobias Christensen was a major factor throughout and he showed his versatility with three very different plays in a matter of seconds. First, he snuck inside for a lay-up, then he showed his defensive capabilities with a strong block at the other end, and finally he broke away on transition and lobbed an alley-oop that was acrobatically converted (with a lay-up) by Aaron Jackson. This opened up an imposing 17-2 lead and the Celtics were already on the ropes. Spaniard Carlos Hortelano scored six straight points to settle the visitors’ nerves but another three by O’Neill, his fourth, kept the Lakers ticking over. New American signing Xavier Talton replaced Jackson towards the end of the first and the home debutant quickly got to work, driving baseline and finishing to register his first points at the Auracle. Talton then forced a turnover and released Christensen for an easy basket and the Colorado native rounded off an impressive first few minutes on home court with a delicate teardrop that made it 29-15 in favour of St Paul’s. O’Neill added another three, his fifth, to further extend the hosts’ lead but then
the Celtics’ American, Kevin Oberweiser, began to cause problems for the Lakers defence. Oberweiser scored five straight points including a buzzer-beating three to round off the quarter and all of a sudden the deficit was cut to 11. Christensen completed a three-point play to start the second, however, and with Séamus Brosnan also finding his shot, the Lakers’ lead never appeared to be in too much danger. Yet another Brian O’Neill three, his sixth, and two points at the horn by Brosnan (via a goaltend) pushed the lead out to 20 (68-48).

OBERWEISER
O’Neill added a couple more from long range in the third and by that point there was no real possibility of a comeback, despite the best efforts of Oberweiser who was in outrageous form. All told, the Montana native dropped in 43 points. Coach Shane McCarthy gave local youngsters Jamie O’Sullivan and Jack Corridan a chance to shine down the stretch and both acquitted themselves admirably. In the end, the final score of 125 to 106 (the highest-scoring game of the season) didn’t flatter the Lakers one bit. Jackson, Christensen and O’Neill were the top performers but the hosts also got significant contributions from Mick McGinn, Brosnan, O’Sullivan and new point guard Xavier Talton, who showed flashes of excellence on his home debut. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Talton said he enjoyed his first game in Killarney. “I thought the atmosphere of the gym was great with the support of the fans,” the former University of Colorado star said. “I was glad we were able to come away with the win in my first home game. “We’re look forward to getting back to it and continuing the winning streak after the Christmas break.” Next up for the Lakers is an away fixture against IT Carlow on December 28 and they’re back on home court on Saturday, January 4 when they welcome league leaders Ballincollig to Killarney.

Rampant Killarney hit Ennis for five MARTIN O’SULLIVAN CUP: SEMI-FINAL __________________________________________________________________________________
Killarney
29 | Killorglin 5
AGHADOE This semi-final was played in very cold and wintry conditions and the holders, Killarney Rugby Club, were in no mood to relinquish their crown. Killarney started the game very strongly. Shane McSweeney made an 80-metre break inside the first minute but he was held just up short of the line. The hosts didn’t have to wait too long for that opening score which came via outstanding No. 8 David Howard and his try was duly converted by Paudie Sheahan. It was all the home team in the first half and they quickly went over for another try though Shane McSweeney. The foundation for the Killarney win was laid by the dominance of the pack. The third try was scored from a pushover thanks to superb control by Howard at the base of the scrum. Leading 19-0 at
half-time, it was clear that Killarney were hungry for more scores. Ennis started the second half strongly and scored a try within five minutes of the restart. That second period was played in very difficult, windy conditions but Killarney still managed to put some expansive back play together and they responded very quickly. This time it was Mark Griffin who beat the cover to score in the corner. With the win assured, Killarney out half Paul O’Sullivan put in a lovely chip ahead for Brian Lynch and the burly centre did the rest, scoring the closing try of the game under the posts. In the end, it was comprehensive 24-point victory for the home side. The win sets them up for a cup final against local rivals Killorglin in Irish Independent Park, the date of which is yet to be confirmed.

Murphy’s and Heights to renew Ryder Cup rivalry Murphy’s Golf Society and Killarney Heights Golf Society will renew their famous old rivalry in their annual Ryder Cup match on January 4 at Mahony’s Point (weather permitting). Last year in a tight finish Pat Carroll of Murphy’s secured the winning point when he two-putted for a par on the 18th in Killeen. The defending champions will start as favourites this time out. Captain Chris Collins will be happy with some recent performances from two of his team members at Killarney Golf Club. Dermot O'Connor shot level par (43 points) at Mahony’s
to win the Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial and Brian O’Regan (Murphy’s Matchplay Champion) clinched the John C Cooper 36-hole stroke competition at Killeen. The Heights’ manager Eugene O'Sullivan will have David McIndoe Snr (Golfer of the Year, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club) and John Cahill (President’s Prize prize-winner, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club) leading his side. Joining them will be Donal ‘Gap’ O’Sullivan who has performed well in club competitions in recent weeks. It should be a tight match in this fourball format and once again it promises to be a great day of golf.
