Can There Be Too Many Tourists In Killarney?

Words: Adam Moynihan

Anne Lucey’s recent article on what she describes as “over-tourism” received a lot of positive feedback online. In it, Anne says that Killarney, like many towns and cities worldwide, is struggling to cope with the sheer volume of people visiting the town. She also says that our infrastructure and facilities haven’t improved to keep in line with the ever-increasing number of tourists. It’s an interesting thought and it certainly got me thinking. Can there be too many tourists in Killarney? Growing up in Killarney, we’re conditioned to think that the more people who come here, the better. Our local

economy depends so heavily on tourism: the industry supports 3,122 jobs and generates €410m annually. Every major event that draws visitors is said to be “great for the town”. Surely millions of tourists staying in our hotels and spending money in our bars and restaurants can only be a good thing. But is there a breaking point where the number of tourists exceeds what Killarney can actually handle? A point where our product is harmed, not helped, by the amount of visitors descending upon our small town? And, as Anne suggests, has that point already been reached? It’s possible. I look forward to seeing

the figures but it certainly seems as though tourism is up again this year. You only need to pass through town to see that. The streets are busy, the bars are hopping and you hear plenty of people saying that, “the boom is back”. But traffic and parking problems, which we are blue in the face from talking about, continue to plague the town. These are all problems that affect locals (who should be the priority when it comes to town planning) but they are bound to be off-putting to tourists as well. It’s grand saying, “the more the merrier” but if the product is being

damaged, if our guests leave Killarney thinking that it’s overcrowded and inconvenient, will they come back to us? We have to think about the long term. The TEIR 1 tourism report which was published earlier this year predicted growth of 30% for tourism in Killarney by 2025. That’s a huge increase. Unless major steps are taken to accommodate these new visitors, the town will struggle to cope. What do you think? Is Killarney dealing with “over-tourism”? What can be done to tackle the issue? Let us know by emailing newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

Positive Response To Our McShain Campaign In last week’s edition of the Killarney Advertiser, historian Damien Switzer put forward the idea of renaming Killarney House & Gardens in honour of the late John McShain, the great American businessman and philanthropist who bought a large chunk of Killarney and gave it back to us for nothing. He also called for a statue to be erected in McShain’s honour in a prominent location in town. I agreed with Damien and it appears as though I’m not the only one; many of our readers got in touch this past week to voice their approval. Here are some of the

responses we received: Eileen Sheehan: “Absolutely, it should be called John McShain Memorial Park and there should be a statue erected. What a generous couple. Now now we can all enjoy its magic.” Anne Marie Kennelly: “I fully agree that there should be a section of the Park with perhaps a statue, sculpture or plaque for the McShain family. There should be a room in Killarney House given to explaining his story and his construction and career achievements. His generosity was immense and all future generations and visitors should learn about it. But I’d be slow to tear

down the wall. It provides such peace and tranquility within the gardens. No noise pollution at all.” Pat Buckley: “A definite ‘YES’. And not before time. Thank you for highlighting it.” Noreen Healy: “Fair play Adam Moynihan and Damien Switzer for two very good articles. About time the McShain family are recognised for all they have given to the community. Not even a blade of grass or tree named after them. Of course Killarney House & Gardens should be named after them and about time. My family have had strong connections with McShain family over the years and would have worked for them and known them personally. Best of luck in your campaign.” If you have an opinion on the issue, please let us know via newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie. Find out what Anne Lucey thinks on page 14.

Multi-Faith Ceremony Marks Opening Of New Graveyard

A new graveyard to provide for burials in the greater Killarney area was opened on Wednesday morning. The facility, at Knockeendubh on the outskirts of the town, will provide approximately 2,300 burial spaces or plots. The opening of the graveyard on Wednesday morning was attended by the Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr John Sheahan and the elected members of the Killarney Municipal District as well as the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD and Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell.

A multi-faith ceremony also took place to mark the opening. Burial plots are now available to those of all faiths and none. A car park at the graveyard, just off the Killarney-Kilcummin road, has also been completed and in time, the facility will also incorporate a columbarium wall for the placement of urns containing cremated remains. Cllr Sheahan thanked the staff of Kerry County Council who helped to bring the facility to fruition. He said it was important that the council provided a burial ground to cater for the needs of Killarney over the coming years and that a final resting place be made available for the people of the town and the surrounding area.

Housing

20 New Houses At Lios An Fhia The Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Mr Eoghan Murphy TD, has performed the official opening of a new 20-unit social housing scheme in Killarney. The new estate, called ‘Lios an Fhia’, which was completed by Kerry County Council under the Rebuilding Ireland Programme, is situated at Park, near Gaelscoil Faithleann. The €3.1m scheme of two-storey, three-bedroom units will provide homes for families currently in need of accommodation in the Killarney area and are finished to a very high standard. The project was

overseen by the Capital Infrastructure Unit of Kerry County Council and was completed by Ned O’Shea and Sons Construction Ltd. Construction began in February 2017 and tenants have moved into the new homes last week. Opening the new housing scheme today, Minister Murphy said: “I can see that this development has been designed and built to a very high standard. I understand there is an already vibrant community spirit in this area and the new residents here, in this new estate, will add to that.” The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Nor-

ma Foley, said it was a wonderful day for Killarney and for Kerry: “Today’s development represents further progress on the significant work programme across all housing delivery streams through Kerry County Council and with the support of the government’s Rebuilding Ireland programme.” The houses are of traditional cavity wall construction with excellent insulation and airtightness levels. Each dwelling has an air to water heating system with underfloor heating to the ground floor and low temperature radiators to the first floor. All units have an A3 BER rating.

TOWNTALK In Memoriam

Killarney Remembers Sheila Courtney A special barbeque to help raise funds for Killarney’s inspirational Ian O’Connell took place in Scott’s Bar and Courtyard last month. It raised an amazing €6050 for the Ian O’Connell Trust Fund, which will help with his rehabilitation and modify his home. Organiser Denis Geaney said “We are truly grateful to all the musicians who played and gave their time and talents to the event. A big thank you to all the organ-

ising committee, volunteers and staff at Scotts Hotel, the response and turnout for the Barbeque was fantastic, Ian is such an inspirational young man, he deserves all our help and support” At the presentation were, Maurice O’Donoghue, Scotts Hotel, Ian O’Connell, Derry Healy, Musician, Denis Geaney, Organiser, Paddy O’Donoghue, Chef and Mike O’Connell, Ian’s Dad. The town of Killarney was deeply saddened this past week following the passing of popular local woman Sheila Courtney. Sheila (nee Kelleher) was originally from St Brendan’s Place and later lived in High Street and Ardshanavooley. In 1956, Sheila married Michael Courtney and the pair became known as the King and Queen of High Street. Michael operated a successful tailoring business and he was also long serving member of Killarney Urban District Council. During this time he and Sheila became great friends to the Killarney Advertiser.

Following his untimely death in 2010, Michael was succeeded on the council by his sons (first Hugh and later Paddy). Another son, Donie, is an acclaimed actor who created the wonderful oneman show God Has No Country, the life story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty. Mrs Courtney is survived by her children Kathryn, Nancy, Paddy, Shelanne, Gary, Mike, Hugh and Donie, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, 23 grandchildren, brothers, sisters, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, other relatives and a great many friends.

Purple Flag

Killarney Looking To Retain Purple Flag Status Killarney will be looking to retain its Purple Flag following following the latest assessment which will take place on Friday, July 27. The flag is currently flown with pride at the Town Hall, Garda Station and at KDYS Centre. The town was awarded the Purple Flag in 2014 and it has successfully retained its status since. Two assessors will be visiting Killarney for the overnight assessment next Friday. They will tour the town from 4pm to 3am to determine whether Killarney has a safe and vibrant early evening and night-time economy. Local businesses have been asked to row in behind the Purple Flag initiative by taking particular care on the night in question. They have been encouraged to decorate windows in purple and a number of hotels and buildings will be lit up in purple. Business owners have also been asked to be vigorous on litter and glass, especially from 10pm onwards. Starting this weekend, security staff around the town will wear new purple high-vis jackets and they are encouraged by Killarney Purple Flag Working Group to pay particular attention during the assessment and to communicate with the gardaí. The Purple Flag is an international accreditation scheme for towns and city centres in the evening and at night. It is the ‘gold standard’ for early night-time entertainment destinations. Like Blue Flags for beaches, towns that meet the stringent criteria can proudly fly the flag. Purple Flag aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of night-time destinations from

Paul O’Neill (President, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce), Eileen O’Connor (Killarney Municipal District), Des Bailey (KDYS), Eileen O’Donoghue (Killarney Municipal District) and Frank Doran (Chairperson of Killarney Purple Flag) with security personnel Caoimhín O’Donoghue and Tom Stack.

5pm to 5am. Town centres that achieve a Purple Flag are those which are vibrant and well managed in the evening and night-time. It provides a safe and friendly environment in which to live, work and socialise. Over 70 town and city and town centres have been awarded Purple Flags in the UK and Ireland since the scheme was launched in October 2009. The total number in the Republic of Ireland is 16. The Purple Flag accreditation is based on five sets of criteria that town centres must meet in order to obtain the award. These include wellbeing in terms of safety and care, movement meaning transport and

car parking, appeal of restaurants, bars, other venues including arts and culture, place in terms of location and design and, most importantly, the policy envelope which shows a collaboration between sectors, agencies, service providers and policy-makers. Killarney’s Purple Flag initiative is led by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, working with Killarney Municipal District/Kerry County Council, the gardaí, local businesses, groups and local schools. It is vitally important that Killarney retains its Purple Flag because the symbol is becoming widely known in the tourism industry as a major international brand.

St Mary Of The Angels Celebrates 50 Years Of Care Over 400 people gathered for a milestone birthday this week as St Mary of the Angels celebrated its Golden Jubilee. Mass was concelebrated by Bishop Ray Browne with Archbishop Dermot Clifford as parents, family and friends expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the wonderful care provided by the facility, which is located in Beaufort and is home to 76 people with physical and intellectual disabilities. St Mary of the Angels was founded as a residential facility for children

with varying degrees of disability by the Franciscan Sisters in 1968 on land donated to them by local couple Denis and Mary Doyle. Thanks to the pioneering vision and forward thinking of the Franciscan Sisters it gained widespread recognition as a model of care unlike any other. In May 2005, services and ownership were transferred from the Franciscan Sisters to the Hospitaller Order of St John of God. Today it is operated by Saint John of God Community Services Limited.

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Rebalancing The Church’s Influence In Schools School may be out for the summer but it seems there may be a referendum on religious involvement in schools. The target is the Catholic Church. The call is led by Labour, a party that, though decimated, still manages to engineer the social conversation. The right wing PDs, too, had influence far beyond their weight. What seemed to be a courageous stand against corruption in the late 1980s turned into buccaneering marketeering, with precious little regulation. The catchword was competition and privatisation. Our old universities, our health system, and public housing systems were Americanised. The Greens were also a tiny party but their disproportionate influence was beneficial and forward-thinking. But I would say that, wouldn’t I?! The point is the smaller the wasp in Ireland, as in the UK with UKIP, the greater the sting. In the case of Labour, though, it is the sting of the dying wasp, and that is always deadlier. Because ironically, Labour, like the Church, still have real power – many of their people are in top public service positions, maybe

thanks to party in the first place! I don’t disagree with Labour about a rebalancing of the Catholic Church influence in education. But I don’t think it should be rushed, as Labour seems to be doing with an online petition looking for support for a referendum because of what they say is the “disproportionate influence” of the Catholic Church on young people. Is there an appetite for the complete removal of religion from schools? Let’s look at the removal of religious symbols from hospitals. This, too, was top heavy. I saw no appetite from the ground up for it. And it has never been fully explained. Health and safety was one issue trotted out. On the street, of course, people were blaming the Muslims and the arrival of different faiths. They had nothing whatsoever to do with it and in this town, many in the Islamic community came out in support of the replacement of the Community Hospital Statue, for instance. Labour, whose supporters for some reason have dominated posts in secular education like old VECs, would want to be very careful they do not sow division this

All Faiths Welcome At New Graveyard The opening of the new cemetery in Knockeendubh at 9am on Wednesday morning was not something I rushed eagerly towards. Funerals are not my forte, and I am of the opinion we spend too much time on death in Ireland, and perhaps not enough on the living. But I was glad I went. For the 28 people present, it was a humbling – from the word humus, earth, occasion, death being always the great leveller. Mostly it was council staff and Killarney councillors who turned out. The HealyRaes, who are great funeral goers, were out in numbers, with both Danny and Michael on location early and no funeral taking place and no thousands to sympathise with! The views in Knockeendubh are not Aghadoe, but I have always found Aghadoe a cold, windswept spot and I probably spent too much time visiting relatives and friends there in my childhood to have any great time for the place. Knockeendubh is a cosy enough place, and as Cllr John Joe Culloty observed, if you cut the hedges a bit you might even be able to see Carrauntoohil. He and I agreed to continue to argue theology if we find each other in adjoining plots. In fact, I might not be alongside

him at all, as I told him. We might have to shout across someone speaking an entirely different language and with a different view of God. For the new graveyard is diverse spot. As with the first non-denominational cemetery at Goldenbridge, founded coincidentally by Kerryman Daniel O’Connell in 1828 and inspired by Paris’ Pere Lachaise, Knockeendubh is to reflect the diversity of the new

Killarney. And for all denominations and none, we will all face east together. The humanist tradition as well as Celtic spirituality were reflected. Undertaker Michael O’Shea read from the Jewish text of Ecclesiastics: “For everything there is a season,” and from Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd.” Rev Simon Lumby read the Anglican prayer for “hallowing” a new graveyard. The Killarney Imam, Mohammed

Saeed, whose congregation numbers 400, he tells me, read an extract from the Koran about how everyone must taste death. Main celebrant Fr Niall Howard of St Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney noted: “We face east. For Muslims, because of Mecca. For Christians, because of the rising sun, symbolising the Risen Christ, and the Irish tradition, too, is to be buried facing east.” All our hope was after a long life, lived well and passing away gently, Fr Howard said. But every graveyard tells us there will be stories of deep sorrow here for some, he said. A prayer from Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, was recited and a poem was read by town official Eileen O’Donoghue. Immam Saeed referred to his faith’s request to refrain of speaking ill of the dead and two minutes were given to the Killarney town tradition of Coiscéim na Trocaire – of turning on the road and walking a few footsteps with a hearse, when Fr Howard and all those present were asked to walk in silence along the paths of the new ground. I was struck by the similarity across all the faiths of “the people of the book”- Muslim, Jewish and Christian. It was a profound occasion, though I am in no hurry back there.

time around and pretend that it is because we have a more diverse society we need to throw out our own traditions. That is simply not the case. It is not true, and Labour need to state that very clearly and set out their stall very openly… We are entering scary territory here. How is the removal of the Catholic ethos going to be policed? How do you separate the dancer from the dance? Like characters in George Orwell or Russia under Stalin, is Labour going to take a fine comb to text books to root out the “Catholic”? Their argument for the necessity of a referendum on the removal of religious involvement is based on the gay marriage and abortion referenda. But I would argue this was social change and the people who voted for the changes were all schooled in the fine Christian tradition of “live and let live”. So, Labour may need to reflect on the great irony that whatever about the institution of the Church, the recent changes in openness in Irish society came about in the first place precisely because of the kind of liberal and civic education it instilled in voters.

John & Mary McShain It is a fact that Killarney owes so much to John McShain and I would argue to his wife Mary who outlived him. While the input of the Vincents in Muckross is well documented and recognised, there is no similar recognition of the couple who presented Innisfallen Island, Ross Castle, Killarney House and much more to the town. I sometimes think of the McShains in the same light as Chester Beatty and his wife Edith in Dublin who left us a priceless collection of eastern art, giving us the makings of one of Europe’s greatest museums. Neither family had any connection with Ireland. I feel strongly we have too many statues and plaques to men in this town. Mission Road is an example where not even one nun is recognised - and the role of women is not recognised nearly as much as it should be. Women started the hotels and the guesthouses their sons and daughters now enjoy but where is the statue or the plaque? Women worked hard in the laundries and the dining rooms and “the upstairs”, and were often badly paid, to put children through college, and to keep the industry going, and where is the public recognition? I think, with the McShains, there is a real chance for Killarney to start something different now. If there is to be a statue or a road named, or a plaque, let it be to both John and Mary and let it be, at long last, the first time in Killarney we will have recognised a man and a real woman together in the town. It would be a start for all the women in Killarney.

Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets recently celebrated 10 fantastic years at their Killarney store at a function in the Killarney Heights Hotel and they used the occasion to pay tribute to some of their longest serving members of staff. Charlie Santos, DJ O’Driscoll and PJ Sugrue have been loyal employees for a number of years and, on the company’s birthday, their service was acknowledged by company founder Kieran Corcoran. He thanked them for their hard work to date and said that Corcoran’s loyal employees are one of the main reasons behind the company’s contin-

ued success. Kieran was also full of praise for Corcoran’s loyal clientele and said that his team was looking forward to catering to their needs for many years to come. Congratulations to the team at Corcoran’s on 10 great years in Killarney and all the best for the future.

With Dublin’s Supremacy, How Can Munster Sustain Three Airports? It is curious how two weeks ago we raised the issue of the supremacy of Dublin airport and the lack of services for the ordinary person to and from the airport from Kerry. The figures were released for June and they are the highest ever recorded. Some 3.1 million passed through Dublin airport. It is not one bit surprising since Dublin has corralled most of the air traffic and to get almost anywhere you have to go out from Dublin. I was curious about Cork, the country’s second biggest international airport, given a bus leaves on the hour from

the city to Dublin, leaving behind that fine airport where €160 million was invested in its terminal building alone during the boom. I saw no figures about Cork, so I sought them. Some 260,069 passengers flew in and out of Cork Airport in June versus 250,178 in June 2017, an increase at the country’s second busiest international airport after Dublin of +4.0%. I rest my case about regionality, peripherality, and any suggestion that Munster in any shape or form is getting equal treatment. Shannon gets fewer than Cork Airport. And Kerry

Words: Anne Lucey

fewer still. How can a country sustain three airports in Munster that between them don’t get one fifth of the numbers Dublin gets? And will it be long before a case is made to shut all or two of the three? Dublin is eating all before and after it and this is in s pite of the fact the city is crowded and unable to cope and that it has no facilities for connectivity outside its commuter belt. Most of the TDs in Leinster House are rural TDs yet the march of Dublin continues. Are they all so over-awed by the big city and its wily politicians and sophisticated mandarins in the civil service

that they are run rings around? What power politicians have is with the rural TDs and they are not using it. I think it is high time wequestion the value of our TDs and the Dáil and to see if any other form of governance might be found to right the balance. A few simple ideas like tax breaks for companies relocating and airlines flying in and out of the south should not be beyond them, surely. Alas and alack it seems that it is. Perhaps a referendum on the Dáil rather than the Senate was what was really required? At any rate, a serious look at our political structures is badly needed.

Fiona McSweeney from Kilcummin walked away with a trip for two to Paris after being named Best Dressed Lady at yesterday’s Killarney Races. Hundreds of glamorous ladies were vying to claim the prestigious top prize at the 25th Dawn Milk Ladies Day but, in the end, it was Fiona who caught the eye of celebrity judge Una Healy. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser after

her win, Fiona said she was in complete shock. “The competition here was very high,” she said. “I’m over the moon.” Fiona’s headpiece is from Liz O’Sullivan (Marc Millinery, Cork) and her jumpsuit is Lavish Alice online. Una Healy’s husband, rugby star Ben Foden, was responsible for selecting the Best Dressed Gent and Michael Dorgan from Cork beat off stiff competition to pick up a trip for two to Milan.

Healy-Rae Picks Out A Cap Fit For A Prince Michael Healy Rae TD was in Killarney over the weekend shopping for a gift fit for royalty. Last Tuesday, Michael was one of the invited guests that got to meet Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in Dublin. The couple were on their first official state visit since their fairytale wedding in May. Prince Harry was particularly taken with Michael’s signature cap and even asked Deputy Healy-Rae to send one to Buckingham Palace.

Never one to disappoint, Michael called in to see Enda Walsh of Quills Killarney to pick out a cap fit for a prince. Speaking about the purchase, Michael said: “The moral of this is you have to answer all requests, big and small. Maybe it might interest himself and Meghan in all of the other good things in Kerry and they might take up my invitation of coming to visit Kerry in the future.”

Switzer A R C H I V E

The Dennagh Flour Mill Is there any trace of it left? ‘Fortunately yes’. The Dennagh Mill was situated at the end of Port Road. Most people are unaware of its exsistance and some asked was there any trace of this huge building left, I replied ‘unfortately not’. I was wrong!!! Through my research I have discovered that in the 1830/40’s the Monastery in Port Road was under construction. Although still unfinished, the cloister was unroofed and the chapel consisted merely of four walls. The brothers had moved in. The Deenagh flour mill down the road had just been knocked down, so the builders took advantage of the available raw materials. Thus the very large towering limestone blocks at the sides of the water wheel were brought to the Monastery and were used to build the buttresses in the chapel.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Spain Drops Puigdemont Arrest Warrant Spain’s supreme court has withdrawn its European Arrest Warrants against former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont and five of his aides who remain abroad. A German court ruled earlier that Mr Puigdemont could not be extradited to face the Spanish charge of rebellion over Catalonia’s push for independence. Rebellion is the most serious charge levelled against Mr Puigdemont. But the charges against the six Catalan separatists remain, meaning they still face arrest if they return to Spain. The Schleswig-Holstein regional court in Germany accepted that Mr Puigdemont could be extradited for the charge of misusing public funds, but not for rebellion or sedition. Spain’s top judge Pablo Llarena says that in doing so, the German court showed a “lack of engagement” with the case and violated the arrest warrant rules. He accused it of undermining the Spanish supreme court’s powers. Spain outlawed the independence referendum held in Catalonia on October 1. It also considers the subsequent Catalan independ-

ence declaration illegal. Facing arrest in Spain, Mr Puigdemont fled to Belgium and then moved on to Germany, where he remains on bail and has been fighting extradition. The other Catalan separatists wanted in Spain are: Antonio Comin, Luis Puig, Meritxell Serret, Clara Ponsatí and Marta Rovira. Nine other top Puigdemont aides, including Oriol Junqueras, have been jailed in Spain pending trial. Last month Spain ended its temporary direct rule over Catalonia, as a new nationalist-led government was sworn in there, headed by Quim Torra, who is an ally of Mr Puigdemont. Judge Llarena said the German court handling the Puigdemont case had shown “a lack of engagement with certain facts that could have broken Spain’s constitutional order”. He said the court ought to have taken its concerns about the arrest warrant to the European Court of Justice for a ruling. Authorities in Belgium have already rejected the Spanish warrants against Antonio Comín, Luis Puig and Meritxell Serret. Clara Ponsatí is in Scotland and Marta Rovira is in Switzerland.

Trump Corner Trump Urged To Give Full Account Of Putin Talks The White House was under growing pressure yesterday to provide a full account of Donald Trump’s private talks earlier this week with Vladimir Putin, as Russian officials spoke of “important verbal agreements” made. As some Democrats went as far as to push for the US translator in the room during Monday’s summit in Helsinki to give an account to Congress, Putin on Thursday hailed the meeting as a “success”. In the aftermath of the outcry from Democrats and some Republicans around Trump’s remarks, in which he sided with Putin rather than US intelligence over Russian interference in US elections, attention shifted to what was said in the private talks. This was heightened after comments on Wednesday by Russia’s ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, who told reporters in Moscow the two leaders had reached “important verbal agreements”,

Never fails to entertain

including preservation of the New Start and INF arms control agreements. Antonov, who called the meeting “important, comprehensive, productive and constructive”, said the Russian president had made “specific and interesting proposals to Washington” on how the two countries could cooperate on Syria. Antonov said that one idea under consideration was a joint US-Russian fight against terrorism. “It seemed to me, my impression was that the US side listened … with interest,” he reportedly said. Trump, in an interview late on Wednesday with CBS News, gave a vague outline of the discussions and said Putin was responsible for the cyber-espionage assault on US political institutions before the 2016 election because “he’s in charge of the country”. Early Thursday, Trump promoted the Helsinki talks on Twitter and said he looked forward to his next Putin meeting – though it was unclear when exactly this is expected to be.

Zuckerberg Criticised Over Holocaust Denial Comments Mark Zuckerberg has once again found himself at the centre of a row after saying posts from Holocaust deniers should be allowed on Facebook. In an interview with technology website Recode, Mr Zuckerberg said that he did not believe such people should be removed from the site. They were not, he said, “intentionally” getting their facts wrong. The comments caused a backlash and Mr Zuckerberg later issued a clarification. The original comments, given in a wide-ranging interview with Recode, were made in response to questions about what Facebook was doing to combat fake news and sites, such as InfoWars, that promoted conspiracy theories. In Myanmar, also known as Burma, Facebook has been accused by UN investigators of facilitating violence against Rohingya Muslims by allowing anti-Muslim hate speech and fake news. The social network has now said that it will begin removing misinformation that could lead to people being physically harmed. When asked about its policy on

fake news, Mr Zuckerberg offered, without prompting, the example of Holocaust deniers. “I’m Jewish and there’s a set of people who deny that the Holocaust happened,” he told reporter Kara Swisher. “I find it deeply offensive. But at the end of the day, I don’t believe that our platform should take that down because I think there are things that different people get wrong. I don’t think that they’re intentionally getting it wrong. “Everyone gets things wrong and if we were taking down people’s accounts when they got a few things wrong, then that would be a hard world for giving people a voice and saying that you care about that.” The comments caused a storm of protest. Editor of anti-fascist magazine Searchlight Gerry Gable told the BBC: “Zuckerberg could kill much of this dangerous material getting worldwide distribution - but he is a like a spoilt teenager.” “Because of his financial powers, he just does a bit of tinkering without understanding how this material could inspire crazy people to firebomb synagogues, mosques or churches.”

Noah Defends ‘Africa Won The World Cup’ Joke US-based South African comedian Trevor Noah has defended himself after being criticised by a French diplomat for saying “Africa won the World Cup”. The Daily Show host made the comments on his satirical show a day after France beat Croatia to win football’s most coveted prize on Sunday. More than half of the French squad can trace their heritage back to Africa. The French ambassador to the US said the comedian was denying their “Frenchness” by calling them African. “This, even in jest, legitimises the ideology which claims whiteness as the only definition of being French,” Gérard Araud said in a stern letter to Noah. “They were educated in France, they learned to play soccer in France, and they are

French citizens. They are proud of their country, France.” The Daily Show posted a video of the South African comic reading out the letter on Wednesday (later tweeted by the French embassy in the US) - and going on to argue that the players’ African identity should be celebrated. Noah said he understood where the ambassador was coming from and how his comment could be perceived as “joining the attack” with France’s far right. But he said his statement should be put in context: “When I am saying, ‘They are African’, I am not saying it as a way to exclude them from their Frenchness, but using it as a way to include them in my Africanness.” To deny that duality was something he “vehemently” disagreed with.

Paisley Apologises For Failure To Disclose Family Holidays DUP MP Ian Paisley Jr has made an emotional apology in the House of Commons over his failure to declare benefits he received from the Sri Lankan government. The failure has led to Paisley Jr being suspended from the Commons for 30 days. The suspension comes following a September 2017 article in The Daily Telegraph which alleged that he accepted “two all-expenses paid trips from the Sri Lankan government’ in March and July 2013, which he had not registered in the House of Commons’ Register of Members’ Financial Interests. On the first occasion, Paisley was said to have been accompanied by his wife and four children and on the second by his wife and two of his children. An investigation into the matter found that the trips included: “business-class air travel, accommodation at ‘first-class’ hotels and helicopter flights to tourist destinations.” Paisley accepts that the trips cost around £50,000, but the investigation put the figure at closer to £100,000. Today, Paisley made a personal statement,

saying it is with “profound personal regret and deep personal embarrassment”, despite last year calling the Telegraph article “devoid of fact or logic”. “I take my duties as a Member of Parliament seriously. I believe I conduct myself with colleagues with integrity, with openness and that is why I have such remorse about the matter as I believe it goes against the grain of who I am – especially how it is portrayed. It is to my constituents, who have sent me here since 2010, that I make the profoundest of all apologies. They have honoured me with unwavering support to be their voice and I hope they will continue to have that confidence in me in the future.” Becoming emotional, Paisley said, “We all in this chamber know that in public life if you make mistakes they are amplified, and rightly so – that’s the nature of the job all of us do and all of us understand that. But I believe in politics and I believe in politicians that can admit human frailty, that can apologise, can mean it and can move on – because that’s what real life is all about.”

Israel Passes Controversial Nationality Bill Israel’s parliament has passed a controversial law characterising the country as principally a Jewish state, fuelling anger among its Arab minority. The “nation state” law says Jews have a unique right to national self-determination there and puts Hebrew above Arabic as the official language. Arab MPs reacted furiously in parliament, with one waving a black flag and others ripping up the bill. Israel’s prime minister praised the bill’s passage as a “defining moment”. “A hundred and twenty-two years after [the founder of modern Zionism Theodore] Herzl made his vision known, with this law we determined the founding principle of our existence,” Benjamin Netanyahu said. “Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people, and respects the rights of all of its citizens.” However, the law risks further alienating Israel’s large Arab minority, who have long felt discriminated against. Called The Basic Law: Israel as the Nation State of the Jewish People, the legislation

essentially defines Israel first and foremost as a Jewish state. Among its 11 provisions, it describes Israel as “the national home of the Jewish people” and says the right to exercise national self-determination there is “unique to the Jewish people”. It also reiterates the status of Jerusalem under Israeli law, which defines the city - part of which is claimed by the Palestinians as the capital of a future state - as the “complete and united... capital of Israel”. Controversially, the law singles out Hebrew as the “state’s language”, effectively prioritising it above Arabic which has for decades been recognised as an official language alongside Hebrew. It ascribes Arabic “special status” and says its standing before the law came into effect will not be harmed. In one of its clauses, the law stresses the importance of “development of Jewish settlement as a national value”, though it is unclear whether this also alludes to settlement in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Gardaí:

‘Use Your Brain Not Your Fists’ New garda figures have revealed that 2017 was the worst year for assaults in almost a decade. Statistics released yesterday show that last year saw the highest number of assaults since 2008, and that assault levels for the year so far are on par with 2017 levels. The figures, compiled by the Garda Statistics Analysis Service, also revealed that one in every four assaults last year was perpetrated by a repeat offender. The majority of assaults were carried out by men between 18 and 34 against men of a similar age, usually in public and typically between 8pm and 5am at the weekend, peaking early on Sunday morning. While the total number of assaults in Ireland decreased year-on-year between 2008 and 2013, the figure has since risen, which gardaí are linking to an upturn in the economy. The statistics were released as gardai re-

launch their ‘Use Your Brain Not Your Fists’ campaign, which urges men to consider the consequences of assaults for themselves and others. The ad campaign, which will run across social media and in pubs and nightclubs, will remind men that they could lose their jobs and ability to travel, or end up in prison, if they are convicted of assault. Gardaí have also implemented a multi-strand anti-crime strategy, identifying assault hotspots and working with pubs, businesses, and local councils to address issues around anti-social behaviour. Sergeant Graham Kavanagh from the National Crime Prevention Unit (NCPU) said the vast majority of assaults that happen in Ireland are avoidable. He also urged the public to be clever about how they approach aggressive individuals, and for people not to be afraid to ask for help if they get into trouble.

GAA Refuse To Open Páirc Uí Chaoimh For Liam Miller Charity Match Organisers of the Liam Miller charity match were refused permission to host the game at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The match, which will feature high-profile former players from Manchester United, Celtic and Ireland - will take place in Turner’s Cross on September 25. But organisers had sought permission to play the game at Páirc Uí Chaoimh which has a capacity of 45,000. Fans are expected to be left disappointed when tickets go on sale today as the capacity of Turner’s Cross is just 7,000. “Turner’s Cross stadium will be packed to capacity, the tickets are going to fly out the door tomorrow,” said Cork Lord Mayor Mick Finn. “There is such a demand for this event that I have no doubt it will sell out within a couple of minutes. Attempts were made by Michael (O’Flynn), and myself and others to see if Páirc Uí Chaoimh would be available. But they have their own internal practices, the response was it wasn’t available on this occasion. “I think it has to go before Congress, [to use] every pitch outside Croke Park. They have approval for Croke Park I think generally, and every other facility has to go before Congress which isn’t until next February, so it just wasn’t an option. “They have offered their premium facilities free of charge, conscious of the fact that Liam played with Éire Óg, and captained his school

to a Sciath na Scol final in ‘93. They are making those facilities available if required, but unfortunately, on this occasion, it was just too soon for it to be organised.” Mr Finn also added that the Cork County Board were “receptive”, but their hands were tied. The GAA’s controversial Rule 42, which prohibits GAA stadiums from hosting non-GAA sports, was modified in 2005 with Croke Park opened while Lansdowne Road was under reconstruction. In 2010 the GAA voted to keep Croke Park open when Lansdowne was finished but other GAA stadia are not permitted to host ‘foreign sports’. There has been widespread anger on social media with the GAA’s rules coming in for criticism.

Review: Sigrid - Raw EP It’s not very common practice for an artist to drop an EP and then, a few months later, revise it with two additional tracks. Then again, Sigrid has proven she likes to do things her own way by now. Solving the mystery of why two song titles were scratched out of the previous version of the Raw EP‘s artwork, Sigrid has finally shared the missing tracks with the world last weekend. In fitting with the release’s theme of introspec-

tion and flow of pop-ballad-pop, the two new tracks once again show the duality of Sigrid’s style. Sigrid has accomplished a lot in a short period of time and continues to do things on her own terms. The Raw EP has become almost a living work of art, evolving over time and continuing to add layers of sentiment to its overarching statement: Sigrid will do what she wants, and she’ll be successful doing it.

Two Mile Community National School Two Mile Community National School is a new school under the patronage of Kerry Education and Training Board. It is child-centred, multi-denominational, and publicly accountable and provides a high quality education for every child. Like all primary schools, Two Mile Community National School follows the Primary School Curriculum (DES 1999) However, a unique aspect of the model is its ethos or characteristic spirit. In Two Mile CNS, the children are provided with a child-centred education that caters for their intellectual, physical, cultural, moral and spiritual needs. The low pupil-teacher ratio allows for children to experience the curriculum in an innovative stimulating way, and allows for the nurture of their well-being and personal development. The children learn about the values of the school, such as equality, human rights and citizenship. In a community-focused school the children experience an environment that encourages parental involvement and benefits from the support and expertise of the wider community. Both the Board of Management and the Parents’ Association work to support the school. As well as its unique multidenominational ethos, having Kerry ETB as its patron is significant in what the school has to offer. The ETB provides key administrative, IT, HR, Capital Buildings and many other supports to the school. Two Mile CNS is also fortunate to have a preschool on site. Little Explorers Preschool provides a wonderful opportunity for children from the locality to experience the transition from home to school. Since opening its doors in August 2017, enrolment in Two Mile CNS has grown steadily. Children from Junior Infants – 6th class have successfully engaged with the all areas of the Primary School Curriculum and have been involved in a range of extra-curricular activities. The school is currently enrolling for all classes from Junior Infants to 6th for September 2018. For enquiries contact Catherine Barry: 086-4183558

Garden Magic Words: Debby Looney

This Is The Year Of The Salvia I think in the future I will remember this summer, not for the weather, but for the salvias! There are so many beautiful varieties out here and this warm, sunny weather really suits them. There are two salvias which everyone is familiar with. Firstly the bedding salvia, with its spikes of fire-engine-red flowers – though they come in cream and purple also. These have become less popular with gardeners over the years as slugs eat them with relish. However, slugs are not ahuge problem in these dry conditions, so bedding salvias are in with a chance! Secondly, everyone knows the herb salvia, or sage. Perfect with chicken, roast squash or parma ham, it is a flavour of autumn. However, there are over 500 salvias to choose from and, happily, nurseries are taking notice of them. This year a notable addition to most garden centre stock is the hybrid Wish collection. There are three, ‘Love and Wishes’, ‘Ember’s Wish’ and ‘Wendy’s Wish’. Being the greedy gardener I am, I planted all three and have been rewarded by large bushy plants with masses of colour. I planted them in a free draining, sunny part of the garden where they have plenty of space. The plants themselves reach about 80cm, flower spikes being at least 20cm long in pink,

aubergine and orange. Another beauty is S. amistad, which every garden with a flower border should have. They grow up to 1.2m with lush dark green foliage topped by dark blue flowers. The calyces (the bit the flower comes out of!) are almost black, giving it a fantastically dramatic look. S. nemerosa is a hardy variety used in Irish gardens for years as it spreads happily keeping weeds at bay. ‘New Dimension Blue’ is a lovely variety with rich blue flower spikes. S. nemerosa does not grow that tall, about 30cm. It is also one of the few salvias which will tolerate heavy soil and a lot of winter rain. S. roemeriana ‘Hot Trumpets’ is also a low growing spreading salvia, about 30cm, with the brightest red flower spikes I have yet to see rivalled! It grows well in dappled shade, adding great splashes of colour. Another red is S. x jamensis ‘Hot Lips’. It is an evergreen perennial, which loves full sun. It grows to about 50cm and has flowers from April through to the first frosts. The flowers are bicoloured red and white like little flags. ‘Killer Cranberry’ is another beauty with magenta flowers. All salvias are attractive to bees and other pollina-

tors and as such are valuable plants for any gardener. They look great grouped with other perennials as well as in pots or on their own in beds. As I said, this is the year of the salvia!

Prosecutors Free To Target Volkswagen Germany’s highest court has dismissed a Volkswagen Group lawsuit seeking to keep its own Dieselgate investigation secret. The German car-maker had sought to ban the Munich public prosecutor from using documents and data it seized in a raid on its investigative law firm, Jones Day, over its emissions-cheating scandal that saw more than 11 million illegal cars sold from 2008 to 2015. The Karlsruhe Federal Constitutional Court has declared that the attorney-client privilege that would typically protect the Jones Day documentation from scrutiny does not apply to internal investigations. This ruling effectively declared the Munich prosecutor’s raid on the Jones Day offices completely legal. Bavarian prosecutors have been on a roll in attacking Germany’s car-makers, raiding the headquarters of Audi in March last year just three hours before the start of its annual earnings conference, doing the same thing to BMW this March and jailing Audi chairman Rupert Stadler last month. Volkswagen applied to prevent the prosecutors from accessing information in the report seized from the Jones Day office, while Jones Day itself filed its own complaint, which was also rejected.

Ford’s first hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) in Ireland has just made its debut on our roads. The Mondeo HEV combines the best facets of the hugely popular car with the benefits of hybrid technology. With its 2.0 litre 187PS automatic transmission petrol powertrain, the new Mondeo HEV will meet the needs of those who want a more environmentally-friendly car but who do not wish to compromise on space, driving dynamics, driving range and comfort. Ciarán McMahon, chairman and managing director of Ford Ireland, believes now is the perfect time to launch the car in Ireland. “Ford has taken the electrification journey,” adding that the Mondeo HEV is a more recent addition to Ford’s electric portfolio. “We introduced the Mondeo HEV towards the end of last year and we believe the time is now right to bring it to the Irish market. The market in Ireland has changed greatly over the past 18 months and there is a new impetus behind the electrified vehicles market here.” The Mondeo HEV will have a particular appeal to a broad swathe of the market, according to McMahon. “We believe this represents a very big opportunity for Ford. It is our first hybrid launch in Ireland and it will appeal to companies that want to demonstrate green credentials.” Familiarity is another plus. “Everyone knows the Mondeo and its great driving dynamics and specs. From that point of view, it’s the perfect vehicle for Ford to start its hybrid journey in Ireland.” It also stands out in the market as many of the hybrids already on the market are smaller in size. “There is a great opportunity in this space for us. Also, when people drive it they quickly realise that it’s a beautiful car to drive. It has a petrol engine but has an electric powertrain and that makes it automatic transmission by default. It is a lovely, quiet drive regardless of whether

you are driving on the petrol engine or the battery.” Another strength is its fuel consumption. “It is very fuel efficient despite being a high-powered petrol vehicle. When you combine all these things together it’s a package that people understand and find attractive. One thing I would say is that people really do need to test drive the vehicle to fully appreciate it. “Once people get in and drive it they are very impressed. The drive switches between electric and petrol power completely seamlessly and it’s very hard to tell when it happens. That’s to do with the way it has been developed. The petrol engine has been specifically designed for hybrid electric vehicles. The overall package is excellent and anyone who has got used to other hybrids will be very pleasantly surprised by the Mondeo HEV.” Looking to the future, McMahon believes it will not be too long before all cars are electric, either hybrids or pure electric with consumer demand and other factors driving the change. There will also be pronounced differences in markets which will continue to be influenced by local factors. “Our HEV offering in the US has been very successful,” he says. “We recently announced plans which will result in further investment in EVs there. In the US, SUVs rather than saloon cars are very much seen as the future. There is a huge market shift over there.” Technology is among the key forces at work in this quiet revolution. “The industry is changing rapidly and technology is changing even faster. Battery technology is advancing all the time and costs are coming down. It is different in Ireland and while the SUV segment is growing, the Mondeo segment continues to be a popular choice in our market.” Test this exciting car now at Killarney Autos. Tyres

Michelin Calls For Worn Tyre Testing If Michelin is right then the world could be about to change the way it looks at tyres. It wants buyers to use braking performance with worn tyres on a wet road - not dry-road grip on a new tyre - as their primary consideration for rubber choice. It’s also keen to see real-world testing of tyres, in a similar style to NCAP crash tests and Europe’s new WLPT fuel consumption tests, to give consumers a better chance of choosing the safest rubber for their vehicles.

“The problem is that all testing is now done with new tyres. We need testing with worn tyres,” says Cyrille Roget of Michelin. “The only time a tyre is new is when it is on the shelf. After that it is always worn to some degree. A lot of people have anxiety about the safety of used tyres. As soon as you start to drive the tyre, performance changes. A little bit at the start, then faster and faster. “Michelin starts a discussion around the worn-tyre performance. We think it is important, as an industry,” says Roget.

F1 Silly Season:

The latest F1 driver market rumours

News

Aston Martin V8 Cygnet Is Bonkers

Revealed at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend, the incredible one-off creation was commissioned by a customer via the ‘Q by Aston Martin’ special operations group – and it was raced up the Goodwood hill-climb! Aston Martin is best known for its high-performance GT cars and race cars – not to mention the F1-rivalling

Valkyrie hypercar – but the Cygnet proves that Aston can do hot hatches too. Like the standard Cygnet that Aston Martin sold between 2011 and 2013 to help it meet European fleet-average emissions regulations, the Aston Martin V8 Cygnet is based on the Toyota iQ. However, this one was developed in-house by Aston Martin and scores Aston Martin

Vantage subframes, Vantage S brakes and seven-speed gearbox, a bespoke prop shaft and limited-slip differential. Somehow Aston Martin has shoe-horned a 4.7-litre V8 into the Cygnet’s engine bay. But one thing’s for sure, it turns the “size matters” slur on its head, even if Aston assures us this one-off mini-V8 doesn’t herald a new-generation Cygnet.

The Formula 1 rumour mill is in overdrive this time of year. While some drivers appear to be fighting for their F1 futures, others are seemingly looking to make the next step in their careers. Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton If Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda’s comments are anything to go by, it looks like Bottas and Hamilton will definitely be lining up for the Silver Arrows once more in 2019. Kimi Raikkonen Raikkonen, out of contract at Ferrari at the end of this season, refused to bite when questioned on rumours linking him to a move back to former team McLaren at the Austrian press conference… Charles Leclerc According to the BBC, Raikkonen will not be at Ferrari next year. They have reported that Charles Leclerc, currently starring in his debut F1 season with Sauber, has agreed, but not signed, a two-year deal to replace the Finn at the Scuderia. Daniel Ricciardo Much has been said of Ricciardo’s future this year, with Max Verstappen revealing at the Austrian GP weekened that the chances of him staying at Red Bull are “very big”. And Team Principal Christian Horner backed up that view. “The conversations with Daniel are going very well,” he told Channel 4. “I sat down with him the other day and asked him if he wants to be here next year. His answer was ‘resolutely yes’.” Carlos Sainz With Ricciardo set to continue his partnership with Verstappen in 2019, Sainz, who is under contract at Red Bull, looks like he’ll remain ‘on loan’ at Renault next season. Horner, this time speaking to Sky Sports, pretty much confirmed that... Fernando Alonso Alonso’s future is another hot topic at the moment. Will he stay with McLaren? Or will he focus on that Triple Crown quest? He recently told Spain’s Cadena Cope radio that he is unsure if he will race in F1 next year, while the BBC report that McLaren’s priority is to tie him down to a new deal. Crossing the Atlantic is a high probability… Romain Grosjean Grosjean has had a stuttering season so far but Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner said this week that the Frenchman – out of contract at the end of the season - still has four races to ‘make it good’ before the American team make decisions about their 2019 driver line-up. Brendon Hartley Hartley hit back at rumours last month linking him with a Toro Rosso exit by insisting, “I know what my contract says”. The Kiwi had his say after the Press Association reported that Toro Rosso had asked McLaren if they could take their reserve driver - Lando Norris - on loan in place of Hartley. Those rumours have gone quiet since... Robert Kubica Kubica is also part of the driver merry-go-round for 2019 and it has emerged his management have started discussions with teams about a race seat. The Williams reserve driver revealed on Friday that there are race seat options for him next year beyond the struggling Grove team.

The New Way To Hyundai Joins ‘Airbnb Sell Your Car For Cars’ In Australia News

TRYING TO SELL YOUR CAR? ‘Airbnb for cars’ is nothing new. An American company Turo has been in this space for over nine years and launched in the UK recently. The Turo model focuses on small car rental businesses looking for an online platform to list their vehicles on. However, Hyundai Australia has taken this a step further. Hyundai car owners will be able to rent out their cars to make extra cash from 2019. Owners of the latest Hyundai i30, Kona, Santa Fe and upcoming IONIQ will soon be able to rent out their cars when they’re not driving them. Earning their owners extra money when they are idle, the Hyundai cars can be hired out by the hour or the day as part of a new partnership between Hyundai Australia and car-sharing company Car Next Door, which is being dubbed ‘Airbnb for cars’. From next year, a new version of the inbuilt Hyundai Auto Link app now in development will be able to connect to a smartphone, allowing mobile devices to unlock and operate the cars. Car companies are betting big on the

new way to drive and the tradition of the one-car, one-owner philosophy is expected to dwindle. Ford, GM, Volkswagen, Daimler and almost every other mainstream car-maker owns a car-sharing or ride-hailing subsidiary. Upstart Chinese car brand Lynk & Co won’t even sell its cars. The sister brand to Volvo is shooting for a new, younger demographic by offering leasing and car-sharing options instead. Angling at a piece of the car-sharing pie, BMW has started trialling a new program called ReachNow in Seattle, Washington. Like Daimler’s Car2Go, this service allows customers to rent on a per-minute basis. BMW is calling it a “premium Airbnb for cars.” Our love affair with the car is quickly dwindling and once we lose our connection of ownership our desire and ability to own a car will no longer be available. Manufactures are already thinking in that way: premium brands like Mercedes and Land Rover have launched dealership subscription services, moving away from the traditional leasing route.

In loving memory of Michael O’Mahoney late of 16 Coolgrean Park Killarney, who died on 19th July 2009.

Cian If we could have a life time wish, And one dream that could come true, We would pray to God With all our hearts, Just to see and speak to you. A thousand words wont bring you back, We know because we’ve tried, And neither will a million tears, We know because we’ve cried. You have left behind our broken hearts, And precious memories too, But we’ve never wanted memories, We only wanted you. Loved and missed always, your heartbroken parents Billy & Joanne xx Brother Time slips by and life goes on, But from our hearts you’re never gone, We think about you always, We talk about you too, We have so many memories, But wish we still had you.

We did not know that morning that God was going to call your name In life we loved you dearly In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you You did not go alone For part of us went with you The day God called you home. ACKNOWLEDGMENT & 1ST ANNIVERSARY

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & 1ST ANNIVERSARY

BARTLETT

DOHERTY

In fond remembrance of Kathleen Bartlett, Late of 30 O’Kelly’s Villas, Killarney. A dear mother, Grandmother, GreatGrandmother, Sister, Neighbour and friend, who passed away on 21st July 2017.

In loving memory of Owen Doherty, Barleymount East, Killarney, Who died on 23rd July 2017.

As we lovingly think of Kathleen at this time, her children Norma, Henry, Kathleen, John, Michael and Tony, Sister Tina, brother Tony and extended family would like to offer our most sincere gratitude to everyone who comforted us in our sad loss. We thanks all who attended Kathleen’s rosary, removal, house wake and requiem mass. Also those who sent mass cards, letters, floral tributes and those who travelled from afar. Thank you to the staff of Aghadoe ward in Tralee General who looked after Kathleen during the two weeks she was there. Thank you to Dr. Coffey and all the staff of Ross Medical Centre, also Tony O’Sullivan chemist. The family are very grateful to Mike & Mary O’Shea and staff undertakers for their guidance and help in such a sensitive manner. A special word of thanks to our dear relatives, neighbours and friends for the kindness they have shown to us at the sad time of Mam’s passing and in the year since then. As we can’t thank everyone individually, mass has been offered for all your intentions. When God was making mothers, He must have made a fuss, He spent a lot of tie on one, And gave that one to us. Of all the gifts in life, However great or small, To have you as our Mother, Was the greatest gift of all. You did so many things for us, Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. Because you were so special, No words could ever say, How much we love and miss you, Today and everyday. Kathleen’s first anniversary mass will be celebrated in St.Mary’s Cathedral on July 21st at 6.15pm.

On this the first anniversary of Owen’s death, we his family wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to all who supported and sympathised with us during this recent sad time. We offer our heartfelt thanks to our relatives, neighbours and friends who attended the rosary, the removal, the funeral mass and burial and to those who sent mass cards floral tributes and messages of condolence. We thank Fr. Tom Looney, Fr. Gerard O’Leary, Fr. Paddy O’Donoghue and Fr. Jim Linehan for celebrating the funeral mass which was comforting and sincere to our family. A special thanks to Fr. Gerard for his kind words And the meaningful liturgy at Owen’s Requiem Mass. Also to Jimmy Dennehy the Sacristan who assisted during the mass and for his kindness.

DOYLE

In loving memory of Owen Doherty, Barleymount East, Killarney Who died on 23rd July 2017.

With love we remember John Doyle, Rathanane, Kilcummin, Killarney whose anniversary occurs on the 25th of July.

I sat beside your bedside, My heart was crushed and sore, I did my duty to the end, Till I could do no more.

Don’t think of him as gone away, His journey’s just begun, Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one,

In tears I watched you sinking, I watched you fade away, And though my heart was breaking, I knew you cannot stay,

Just think of him as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Where there are no days and years,

You left behind an aching heart, That loved you most sincere, I never shall and never will, Forget you father dear.

Think how he must be wishing, That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away,

Sadly missed by your daughter Noreen. Anniversary Mass: Sunday 22nd July at 9 a.m. Church of Christ Prince of Peace, Fossa, Killarney

And think of him as living, In the hearts of those he touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, And he was loved so much. Sadly missed and forever in our heart. Your loving wife Lynda and Daughter Ruth.

1ST ANNIVERSARY

Anniversary Mass will take place in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Kilcummin, on Thursday 26th July at 7.30pm.

5TH ANNIVERSARY DOYLE In loving memory of Owen Doherty, Barleymount East, Killarney, Who died on 23rd July 2017. Jesus came to the foot of the bed, These are the words we are sure he said, You suffered enough, take my hand, And come with me to a better land. So keep your arms around him Lord, And give him special care, Make up for what he suffered, And all that seemed unfair. Please forgive a falling tear, A constant wish that you were here, Others have lost like this we know, But he was our loved one, And we loved him so. From your daughter Anne And son-in-law Donald. A bouquet of beautiful memories, Sprayed with a million tears, Wishing God could have spared you, If just for a few more years. From your grand-daughter Zarah.

In loving memory of My nearest and dearest Dad and Grandad Mike O’Shea, late of 26 Hazelwood Drive and formerly Bocare, Sneem, Kerry, who died peacefully on 20th July 1988.

“Believe me if all those Endearing young charms, Which I gaze on so fondly today Were to change by tomorrow And fleet in my arms, Like fairy gifts fading away, Thou would still be adored, As this moment thou art, Let thy loveliness fade as it will And around the dear ruin, Each wish of my heart, Would entwine itself verdantly still, It is not while beauty And youth are their own And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear, That the fervour and faith Of a soul can be known, To which time will but make Thee more dear, Oh the heart that has truly loved, Never forgets, But as truly loves on to the close, As the sun flower turns On her God when he sets, The same look, which she turned, When he rose” Written by Thomas Moore 1808.

Anniversary Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral, Saturday 28th July at 6.15pm.

Our world just fell apart, We cried in disbelief, We had to stick together, To overcome our grief. We’ll never understand it, It all seemed so unfair, We wish we heard that knock again, And see you standing there. Super Bad

Empty seats in Croke Park for Kerry v Galway on Sunday. Pic: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile.

Kerry Lose As World Cup Clash Backfires On GAA Kerry are on the brink of a shock exit from this year’s championship following last Sunday’s disastrous 1-13 to 1-10 defeat to Galway in Croke Park. The Kingdom were widely expected to top Group 1 in the inaugural Super 8s but defeat in Clones this Sunday could eliminate the Kingdom at the earliest possible juncture. They will be favourites to bounce back against Monaghan but if they play anything like they did last weekend then it could be a very uncomfortable afternoon in Ulster for Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s nascent team. It was a fixture that promised so much but the meeting of the Munster and Connacht champs turned out to be one of the worst GAA games in living memory as both sides failed to cope with the slippery underfoot conditions. It was horrendous fare in truth and the spectacle certainly wasn’t helped by the paltry attendance at HQ. Just 30,740 people showed up for Sunday’s double-header and there were plenty of empty seats on Saturday as well: the Roscommon/Tyrone and Donegal/Dublin games attracted just 53,501. All told, attendance at the Super 8s openers was down 43% on last year’s quarter-finals. Some supporters probably had future group games in mind and the bad weather was certainly a factor, but the concurrent World Cup final defi-

nitely kept Kerry and Galway fans from travelling on Sunday. The GAA were rightly lambasted for scheduling the game for the exact same time as the biggest event in sport and, in the end, the decision backfired big time. The few “real” fans who made the pilgrimage to Croker were rewarded with a putrid game of football in miserable conditions, while those who stayed at home to watch both were treated to one of the best World Cup finals ever. As I mentioned in last week’s edition, I was up in Dublin last weekend and had planned on going to the Kerry game. The more I thought about it, however, the angrier I got with the GAA. Why should we give them our money when they clearly don’t care about us? And by ‘us’ I mean GAA fans who also happen to like soccer. (There are a lot of us.) I met a number of Kerrymen up in Dublin who felt the same way. “F*** ‘em,” was the general consensus. One of the lads had to meet his lift up by Croke Park so we decided to head up and watch both games in the Croke Park Hotel. The World Cup final was being projected onto a big screen at one end of the bar and the Kerry match was on a pair of TVs on the opposite wall. There were also three TVs out in the smoking area. All of them were showing the soccer. The biggest crowd by far was

huddled around the big screen and despite the place being packed with GAA heads, there was little interest in the football - especially after the opening 25 minutes which were appalling. The whole thing was farcical really; there were guys wearing Kerry jerseys watching the soccer inside in the Croke Park Hotel while Kerry played a championship game directly across the road. That won’t sit well with the GAA but maybe they’ll think twice next time a conflict like this comes about.

Football or soccer? A Kerry fan watches the World Cup final in the Croke Park Hotel.

It’s Do Or Die

20.07.18

For Fitzmaurice

Words: Adam Moynihan Pics: Don MacMonagle Paudie Healy

Whenever Kerry lose in Croke Park we tend to have a bit of a meltdown. Every big defeat is greeted with, “That was as bad as I’ve seen them…” and, lately, “Fitzmaurice has to go.” We expect Kerry to win. If they don’t win we expect them to at least play good football. On Sunday, we got neither. Were our expectations too high? We hammered a weak Clare team, we hammered a weak Cork team and then we lost by three points to the Connacht champions in a game that wasn’t even knockout. It’s hardly the end of the world but judging by the immediate reaction you’d swear we got dumped out of the championship by London or someone. I’m not sure what the big fuss was when Páidí ó Sé called us animals. We are animals. But that’s part of what makes Kerry football so special in the first place. Nothing less than the best is accepted from anyone at any level. If we were the type of supporters who were more rational and our attitude was, “Sure, look, you can’t win them all,” how many All-Irelands would we have? The players and management are held to the highest possible standards and they come in for a lot of criticism. But, realistically, would they have it any other way? Speaking after the Galway game, Eamonn Fitzmaurice said Galway were “a bit further down the road” than this Kerry team and although that’s jarring to hear as Kerry fan, he has a point. This is a very young and inexperienced team. But the fact of the matter is that regardless of the average age of the squad, Kerry supporters expect success. If losing badly to the likes of Mayo and Dublin is considered a failure, it’s only natural that losing to Galway has been met with such dismay.

Plan B

Fitzmaurice has been criticised in certain quarters for not bringing on Donaghy and Darran O’Sullivan on Sunday. I can see the merit in trying something different (e.g. lumping the ball into Donaghy) but there has to be better back-up plans than that. Kerry started with Kevin McCarthy, Seán O’Shea, Stephen O’Brien, David Clifford, Paul Geaney and James O’Donoghue. That’s an unreal forward line. Micheál Burns, who has done well in his debut season, was introduced after 52 minutes. Then you’re looking at Donnchadh Walsh and Barry John Keane (both of whom came on) and Donaghy and Darran (who were presumably next in line). After that initial starting six plus Burns, are those the four next best forwards in the county at the moment? The four of them have been great servants for Kerry but they have an average age of 32 (to be fair to Barry John, he’s still only 28). Fitzmaurice evidently hasn’t been suitably impressed with the other options at his disposal and he’s looking at these players week in, week out. If he’s right and they really are the best back-ups we have, maybe Kerry are further away from an All-Ireland than we’d like to believe. Sunday’s game against Monaghan is a huge test for this Kerry side. For many of the players on show it will be the biggest game of their careers to date and there will be massive amount of pressure on their young shoulders. If they lose, Kerry will (more than likely) be out of the championship with the prospect of a dead rubber above in the Fitzgerald Stadium on the August bank holiday weekend. It almost doesn’t bear thinking about. For Fitzmaurice, meanwhile, defeat would almost certainly signal the end of his six-year reign as Kerry manager. There’s a lot on the line in Clones on Sunday but I’m sure Kerry will approach it as an opportunity. Victory in such an intimidating environment and with so much at stake could be the making of their season, and it could set them up nicely for a run at the semi-final. And it might just save their manager’s job. Prediction: Kerry by two

The Tatler Toffees will have to make do with a spot in the Reserve final as they crashed out at the semi-final stage of this year’s Killarney Athletic Senior 7-a-side. The pre-tournament favourites were held to a 2-2 draw by a dogged Liebherr outfit on Wednesday evening and when the match went to a MLS shootout, they missed three of their five shots on goal. Liebherr held their nerve to advance to the final where there opponents will be the Fáilte Legends. The Legends, whose squad is predominantly made up of Celtic players, defeated an understrength Four Star Team 7-0. Four Star will now face the Tatler in the Reserve final on Wednesday. The U-14 final between JR Spares and They Call Us Legends will also take place on Wednesday evening.

There will be plenty of sick fades on show on Thursday as Boru Barbers face Steve’s Barbers in the U-16 decider. This will be a curtain raiser for the main event, the senior final, which kicks off at 8pm. This will be 20 minutes a side with the game heading straight to an MLS shootout in the event of a draw. The U-10 and U-12 7-a-side finals took place last Saturday and Mackey’s Crew clinched the U-10 title thanks in no small part to captain Szymon Jasinski who picked up the Player of the Tournament award. The Underground’s Noah Sexton was named U-12 Player of the Tournament but his side were just pipped by The Kerryonians in the final, captain Matthew Moynihan accepting the trophy on behalf of his teammates. (At least one of the Moynihans did well in the 7-a-side this year.)

The premier domestic event in the Irish rowing calendar took place last weekend at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. The event attracted its largest entry of crews in its long history, with 1,127 crews entered. Killarney and Kerry rowing were strongly represented as no less than six clubs from the Kingdom contested the three-day event held from Friday to Sunday last. The Killarney clubs of Muckross and Workmen were joined by fellow Kerry clubs Killorglin, Kenmare, Tralee and Waterville in the battle for top national honours. During a successful Championship Regatta for the Kerry clubs, the main highlight was the double victory by Workmens RC in both the Women’s Junior Coxless Quad and Women’s Junior Double. With three of their rowers already qualified to the Irish squad for upcoming international competition, it was of little surprise to those in the know that the girls from Workmen entered the Championships as strong favourites for the Junior sculling events. Ciara Moynihan and Ciara Browne were winners of the Womens Junior Double, however they had to work hard in both their heat and final to see off the challenge of the Killorglin RC duo of Rhiannon O’Donoghue and Anna Tyther, who finished second to make it an impressive Kerry rowing 1-2 in the event with New Ross third. On Sunday, the Workmens double crew teamed up with Miriam Fleming and Annie O’Donoghue in the Women’s Junior Quad where they dominated their heat prior to securing their Championship win in the event final with a comprehensive victory over Commercial RC of Dublin in second and Bann RC in third. The double Championship win was historic for the Workmens club, bridging a 29-year gap since the club last won a national title with its trio of title wins in 1989. It brings the club’s championship tally to five and brings the Pat Erwin Shield for the Womens Junior Double to Kerry for the first time. The Seán Hackett Memorial Cup for the Womens Junior Quad will also take pride of place in the Workmens club as it is only the second time this Championship pot has been won by a Kerry club since Killorglin RC’s victory in 2006. The focus for the Workmen’s Championship winning rowers now turns international as they swap club colours for green blades. The double of Ciara Moynihan and Ciara Browne will race for Ireland in the World Junior Rowing Championships taking place in the Czech Republic in August. Meanwhile, Annie O’Donoghue will also race for Ireland at the Coupe de la Jeunesse regatta for European junior crews, taking place at Cork’s National Rowing Centre at the end of July. The Workmen club also came close to two further Championship wins, with Annie O’Donoghue finishing second place in the Women’s Club grade single scull while James McCarthy delivered a matching sil-

ver medal in the final of the Men’s Club Single. Outside of the Championship events, Ryan Bartlett delivered an additional gold medal for Workmen, winning his final of the Mens Junior 14 Single. There was more records in the making for Killarney rowing as Muckross RC became the first Kerry club to win the Men’s Masters Four event at the Irish Championship Regatta. Maurice Coffey, Brendan O’Neill, Jeremy Kenny, former Olympian Paul Griffin and cox Siobhán Galvin overcame the reigning Limerick composite crew of Castleconnell and UL for a historic gold. The club’s B crew in the same event were also third. The two Muckross Masters Fours also raced as one crew in the Masters Eight event. While the Muckross Eight rowed in the fastest time, the age-based handicap system for this older grade saw two crews start and finish ahead of Muckross. At the opposite end of the age scale, there was more gold medals for Muckross in the Men’s Junior 14 Quad, won by the crew of Cian McAuliffe, Niall Coffey, Rory Stack, Nathan O’Connor and cox Ian Coffey. Muckross was also second in four events including Ethan O’Neill and Aisling Coffey in the

Mens and Womens Junior 15 single events respectively, in addition to both the Womens Junior 15 and Junior 14 quadruple sculls. With renowned coach Noel Casey at the helm, Kenmare Rowing & Boat Club has also become a serious force on the national stage. Having only made its Championship debut in recent years, the club has nurtured great success among its junior ranks. Rowan Johnson was winner of the Men’s Junior 15 Single while Ellen Harrington took a second gold for Kenmare RBC in the Women’s Junior 14 Single. Tom Kelly was second in the Men’s Junior 16 single for Kenmare while Eimear Crowley also placed a strong third in the final of the Women’s Junior 18 single. Both Tom and Eimear will also don green jerseys in the coming weeks, with Eimear Crowley selected for Ireland in the Coupe de la Jeunesse and Tom Kelly racing in the Home International Regatta. Tom’s sister Sarah, rowing with Dublin University Ladies Boat Club, has also been selected to the Irish senior squad for the Homes event along with Georgia O’Brien, another Kenmare rowing star currently affiliated with UL RC. With Monika Dukarska leading the charge for Killorglin RC at the recent rowing World Cup event in Lucerne, her fellow female rowers from the Laune based club delivered more success back home. Rhiannon O’Donoghue and Anna Tyther were silver medallists in three Championship finals including the Women’s Intermediate Double, Junior Double and Junior Pair. The Junior 17 duo have been selected to row for Ireland in both the Coupe de la Jeunesse and Home International Regattas. Airida Mateviciute was both a winner of the Women’s Junior 14 single scull finals and a silver medallist in the Junior 15 single, while Jessica Lee secured gold for Killorglin in the Women’s Masters single event. The powerhouse of Kerry rowing was also further in evidence in the adult men’s sculling events. Fionan Crowley, a native of Killorglin and sister of current international rower Aileen, was the winner of the Men’s Senior Single Scull Championship rowing with Castleconnell BC. Killarney oarsman Aodhán Burns, son of Workmens lead coach Mickey-Joe and brother of Kerry senior footballer Micheál, was also in superb form as he claimed the Men’s Lightweight Single Scull Championship. Aodhan’s third place finish in the Men’s Senior Scull also placed two Kerry natives in the top three of men’s single rowing nationally. Overall, some fantastic results by Kerry clubs and rowers competing at the top level of domestic rowing. With several final wins and many more medals and top three finishes at underage level, there is no doubt that the future of Kerry rowing is bright.

Coupe de la Jeunesse (Cork, July 2018): Annie O’Donoghue (Workmen RC), Eimear Crowley (Kenmare RBC), Rhiannon O’Donoghue (Killorglin RC) and Anna Tyther (Killorglin RC). Sport Legion Street Leagues: The Real Super 8s! The inaugural Killarney Legion Street Leagues kicked off last week at Legion’s grounds at Derreen. This fun tournament is for juvenile members of the club aged 10-14. Each team is comprised of a mix of age groups with equal numbers of boys and girls and age groups in each team. Brothers, sisters and neighbours play together in a league of eight teams with exotic names such as the Bears, Panthers and Cheetahs.

The tournament has already been nicknamed The Real Super 8s and will run throughout the summer months. Teams have a young mentor from the club’s U-16 teams on the sideline to guide their team through the competition. Coaches from the juvenile wing of the club are on hand to referee and adjudicate on any controversial ‘hawkeye’ decisions that may arise! The kids can follow their team’s progress on the fixtures section of the Legion website.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

As the sports world was rightly dominated by soccer over the past few weeks, culminating in the fantastic World Cup final last Sunday, things are pretty quiet in rugby circles. Local and provincial clubs returned to preseason training and Munster kicked off their preseason last week, with the Irish internationals continuing their well-deserved break following the hugely successful series in Australia. The focus for the international side and sport in general starts to turn to the Rugby World Cup, which takes place in Japan next year. Ireland received the news during the week that Samoa will join them in Pool A following victory over Germany in Heidelberg last weekend. A 14-point victory in the second leg of the Oceania/Europe playoff sealed the spot for Samoa. That means that next September Ireland will face near neighbours Scotland, hosts

The Club Team taking part in the National Competition “The Barton Shield” were in action over last weekend, playing at Doneraile G.C. and on Saturday they were victorious against Newcastlewest by a margin of 4 Holes. On Sunday morning they faced the Home team Doneraile in the 2nd round, and most unfortunately lost by a margin of 4 Holes, this was despite the total aggregate score of the Killarney Team being only 1 or 2 over par. The Members of the team and pairings were Simon Gallivan & Donal Considine and Ian Spillane & Cormac Finn. This was the eighth occasion that Teams representing Killarney were defeated by the “home side” in the current Inter-Club National Competitions year as earlier in the week the Team playing in “The Michael Cashman Trophy” were defeated by Ceann Sibeal at Ceann Sibeal G.C. The Workmen’s double will represent Ireland at the junior Worlds later this summer, while both of our girls are still junior 17, which means they can contest the junior championships again next year. team but on the day over very good first half display, aided by the breeze gave us a ten point lead at the interval. This made our opponents task of overhauling us a very tough assignment. Even though you have the elements with you it does not always guarantee a lead but we accomplished this through our supremacy at midfield. Johnny Buckley and Daithi Casey shone out in this sector and our forwards took their chances and had some very good scores. Our opponents came at us in the third quarter but we dealt fairly well with this onslaught, added on some scores ourselves and had a good lead going into the last quarter. Both sides ran their benches in the last fifteen minutes and when the game ended with a victory for us it brought our tally of points to 17 in the competition with nine games played. This left us still at the top of the table with two games to play. INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP: We had a big win in the Preliminary Round of the Intermediate Hurling Championship on last Wednesday evening against Abbeydorney. Our young team ran out impressive winners on a scoreline of 5-24 to 1-5. Fossa GAA

SENIORS: Fossa had a great win over Beale in Rd 9 of the County League on Saturday evening. Beale recorded the first score of the game inside a minute but Fossa’s response was immediate, a slick passing move saw Lorcan Daly flick the ball to the net to set Fossa on their way. This was quickly followed by a Paudie Clifford point and a Tadhg O’Shea free, then the 18th minute Fintan Coffey was brought down in the square for a penalty. The resultant kick was expertly dispatched by Paudie Clifford to give Fossa a three point lead at that point. The game was in full flow at this stage but Fossa held their nerve and discipline and did their talking where it mattered most, on the scoreboard. Tadhg O’Shea and Lorcan Daly added points before Lorcan cracked home his second goal of the night in the 28th minute to leave Fossa with a commanding half time lead, 3-05 to 0-07. Fossa got the first two scores of the second half and while Beale did stage a fight back with a goal in the 15th minute, a brace of frees from Tadhg O’Shea kept Fossa in command and they ran out winners on a score of 3-11 to 1-10. This was a complete team display, full of grit, skill and determination where, to a man, when the need was most they stood up and were counted. It leaves the prospect of promotion very much in their own hands with just two rounds of the league to go. U-14 BOYS: On Monday evening Fossa under 14s were at home to Legion on a very warm evening with a strong wind blowing across the field. This was a typical Fossa Legion game with nothing in it, both teams played well with Fossa coming out just on top. At half time Legion were ahead 1-05 to 1-04, a few changes at half time changed the approach of the Fossa boys. Darren Ryan, Sean Dineen, Rian Colleran and Sam Buckley were best for Fossa on the night. Scorers were Rian Colleran 1-01, Rocco Sheehan 1-01, Harry Kelly 0-2, Patrick Lyons 0-2, Darren Ryan 0-1, Sean Dineen 0-1. LOTTO: 15th July 2018. Numbers drawn were 1, 8, 24, 26. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €4,800. BEST OF LUCK: Fossa GAA Club would like to wish Paudie Clifford and the Kerry Junior team the very best of luck in the All-Ireland final against Galway

next Saturday in Ennis. Paudie is a brilliant footballer and hopefully he will get to display all his talents on the biggest stage of all.

Glenflesk

GLENFLESK SENIORS: (sponsered by o briens topoil and the kerryway). Our Senior team moved onto 10 points in the Co League with a hard fought win over Miltown/Castlemaine last Friday in Rd 9 of the Co League. The win guarantees div 2 football for another year and also gives us an outside promotion chance with 2 games to play. It took a dramatic last minute goal from Lee O Donoghue to take the win. FT Glenflesk 2 12 Miltown/Castlemaine 2 10 KERRY U20S: Commiserations to Daniel O Brien and the Kerry U20s on their All Ireland semi final loss to a strong Kildare side last weekend. Kilcummin GAA

ALL IRELAND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Best wishes to Kieran Murphy (Captain), Gary O’Leary, and their Kerry team mates who play Galway in the All Ireland Final on Saturday next in Cusack Park Ennis. Throw in at 2pm. Well done also to Sean O’Leary (U-20’s) and Kevin McCarthy (Senior) who represented club and county at the week end. Although on the losing team both players played well and both got on the scoring sheet and we wish Kevin all the best for the remainder of Kerry’s games. SENIOR FOOTBALL: Our senior team lost out to Desmonds by a single point on Saturday last in Rd 9 of the County League. We found it hard to break down a well organised and determined defence and when they broke out Tomas Hickey was unerring from the numerous frees conceded. This leaves us needing to win our two remaining games at home to Ballymac (July 29th) and away to Kenmare to have a chance of promotion to Div 1. Score Kilcummin 0-10 Desmonds 0-11. Team B Kealy, S Brosnan, D Maher, James Nagle, D. Moynihan, C. O’Leary, (0-1) P. Casey, (0-1) K. Murphy,(0-2) K. Gorman,(0-1) S. McSweeney, G. O’Leary, M. Keane,(0-3) Padraig Nagle, Damien O’Leary, N. Duggan (0-2F) Subs used I. Devane and M. O’Shea.

Killarney Legion

Co.League Div.1 Rd.9. Killarney Legion 0-17 Spa 2-8. STREET LEAGUES: A throw back to Old Killarney with the innovative re-introduction of the street leagues.Up and running in Derreen they are inclusive, fun and for the children involved deadly serious. Future stars on the way. MINOR LEAGUE: Killarney Legion3-8 Tuosist/Kilgarvan 6-14. A flying start saw the combination side run up agood 8pt.lead before the Legion managed to settle themselves into the game. Having done so their best period followed as the hit three goals to leave them just a single point in arrears at the halftime break. The Legion started the second half as they finished the first in good form but when taking the easier option of points probably would have been more rewarding at least three attempts at goal proved fruitless. This gave Tuosist / Kilgarvan the break they needed and they duly took their chance by adding a series of goals of their own to see them comfortable winners in the end. Indeed Legion had reason to thank Robert Osbourne in goal for a string of fine saves as well as a fine goal line fetch from center back Conor O Leary. KERRY V GALWAY: Disappointing to say the least,a poor performance and one would have to ask why a player the calibre of Paul Geaney has to defend on his own 20m line when Kerry were lacking penetration in the forward line. Hopefully Kerry can regroup for a very tough away assignment to Monaghan.
