LOCK DOWN: Alexis O’Mahony with her parents Steven and Teresa at her third birthday party in The Dromhall Hotel last April. Photo: Eamonn Keogh
Family prepares for four months of isolation
The parents of a three-year-old girl - who suffers from a rare condition and needs 24-hour care - are preparing to lock themselves into their Woodlawn home for at least four months to prevent their high risk daughter getting ill. | By Sean Moriarty Steve and Teresa O’Mahony’s daughter Alexis suffers from Pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, a condition that affects her ability to breakdown food to fuel her body, which results in side effects that include Cerebral Palsy and epilepsy. The current highly contagious COV-
ID-19 crisis means she is one of the most vulnerable people in society. On St Patrick’s night Taoiseach Leo Varadkar warned that the current crisis was just the calm before the storm with a surge in Coronavirus cases imminent, and that elderly and chronically ill people should be "cocooned" over the coming months. Teresa is her official carer, but the fami-

ly relies on help from the HSE and from charities like the Jack and Jill Children's Foundation. Her parents cannot risk picking up the virus either and have already taken steps to limit contact with the outside world, including cancelling their HSE nurse and their Jack and Jill carer who would usually help a few days a week to give Teresa a break. As the situation escalates they will have to rely on emergency services like the Red Cross to deliver food to their home as he and his wife will not be able to leave. Steven said he will take every precaution necessary to protect his daughter, but even if the current crisis is brought under control in the short-term, he is preparing for a much longer isolation period. “We have to take these measures," Steven, a pub DJ who is now unemployed, told the Killarney Advertiser. "There is no point in keeping Alexis in isolation if one of us picks up something. I am not scared. Fear affects the immune system, and after all that we have been through over the last four years, I have learned it is pointless being fearful, it serves no purpose. We have a fine back garden when the weather gets better and I will occupy my mind by writing more music, something I did not have the time to do recently.” Steven said that the Irish Government and the health and emergency services were doing a great job despite all that has been thrown at them over the last few days. “This is going to affect every individual in some way, employment, business, mental health, everyone is going to feel this,” he added. “This country is doing really well. Everyone is in this together and we need to show leadership. This is no time for emotions, emotions cloud judgement.”
Killarney hotels could be used as test centres | By Michelle Crean Hotels in Kerry, including Killarney, are believed to have been approached by the HSE to use their premises as tests centres should COVID-19 cases increase in Kerry – the Killarney Advertiser understands. Yesterday evening (Thursday), the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, revealed that there are now 191 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland – bringing a total of 557 in the country.
On Wednesday, six of those confirmed were in Kerry, figures analysed earlier in the week revealed, which means numbers in the county are potentially higher. There have now been three deaths associated with COVID-19 in the Republic of Ireland, and one in Northern Ireland. Currently there is one testing site in Tralee and the HSE yesterday said that are “experiencing unprecedented demand on the system” and “are working to ensure the system is in a position to manage this and projected demand going forward”.
This week, Minister for Finance Paschal Donohue, said the Government has put in place flexible arrangements for business and personal customers with their banks - including three-month payment breaks where necessary, however customers are advised to contact their bank. He also agreed to increase contactless payments to €50 in the interests of public health policy. The Government also introduced general eligibility for a COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment of up to €203 per week for six weeks.
STAYING POSITIVE: Bernadette Randles says the tourism industry will bounce back
“We will bounce back from this” Killarney hotelier | By Sean Moriarty Bernadette Randles, Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, says it is impossible to quantify the job losses and unemployment issues the industry faces in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. Tourism in Kerry employs almost 16,000 people and it contributes over €600 million to the local economy. The Kerry IHF branch has over 100 hotels and guesthouses as members. Each job in the sector creates a half of another job in associated trades like the food supply chain and taxis. A conservative estimate suggests that over 25,000 people in Kerry are affected by the tourism industry shutdown alone and this figure does not include third-party trades like garages who would supply repairs and fuel to the car hire industry. Ms Randles said closing her two hotels and telling her 90 staff she had no work for them was the hardest thing she had to do in a lifetime in the hospitality industry. Her family own and operate the Dromhall Hotel and Randles Court Hotel on the Muckross Road and as well as her role in the local branch she was recently elected national vice-chair of the Irish Hotels Federation. As a gesture of goodwill, she made food packages up from leftover supplies in her hotels’ kitchens so her staff would not be without essentials in the weeks ahead. They repaid the gesture by turning up for work on Tuesday, without pay, and helped prepare for the shutdown by turning off electrical appliances like televisions in all rooms. “We will bounce back from this,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was very upsetting for me and the staff to have to close the hotels, but we will rebuild and we will come through this.”

ON STANDBY: Killarney Gardai are ready to help the community during the current health crisis.
Local gardai ready to help the community Killarney Gardai have adjusted shift patterns and are taking other measures in an effort to confront the COVID-19 crisis. | By Sean Moriarty Superintendent Flor Murphy yesterday (Thursday) said he and his colleagues have a range of measures in place and have a continuity plan set up should a member of the Force become infected by the virus. Garda efforts will be ramped up over the coming days as other services like the HSE come under increased strain. Local gardai are also on hand to help the elderly and more vulnerable in society. “Our role is to reassure the community,”
Supt. Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “Our priority is public safety.” The role of gardai in the community could change in the coming weeks. On Tuesday night Taoiseach Leo Varadkar warned that older and ill members of our community may to have to "cocooned" for months after the initial threats have passed. If this is the case, the gardai will have to assist in delivering much-needed supplies to cut-off households. “We will optimise our resources, our priority will be to support other agencies should the need arise,” he added.
The Superintendent warned that opportunistic criminals would not be allowed to create civil unrest in the county and that even if resources are deployed elsewhere they will still be able to deal with day-to-day issues. There are concerns in bigger centres of population that a long-term shut down could lead to looting and other criminal acts. “I can’t see it being an issue in Killarney,” he added. “The people of the town are respectful and law-abiding. Public safety is our priority and we don’t expect any mass disorder and looting.” He encouraged people to get out and use the National Park – while observing correct social distancing measures. “We are very lucky here, we have the parks and the mountains on our doorsteps and other towns don’t have that. It is a sad time for everyone but we must pull through this,” he added. Killarney Garda Station can be contacted on 064 6631222 and the Garda Confidential Line is 1800-666-111.
MyClinic365, founded by Killarney GP Dr Laura Malone, announced this week that they will donate their telemedicine platform for free to GPs during the COVID-19 emergency. The platform enables doctors to schedule, manage and collect payments for remote tele-consultations with patients for any health issue. All the patient needs is a smartphone or PC, and an internet connection. This week, Dr Malone switched all appointments at her East Avenue Road practice, to remote telehealth appointments to minimise the risk of person-to-person transmission. “We have seen an immediate benefit at our practice,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “We thought donating the use of this telehealth platform for free for the duration of the emergency is the least we can do in the fight against COVID-19.” The HSE has now agreed payments with GPs for remote consultations, she added. “Each practice can typically be up and running in less than 30 minutes. No special software or set–up is required beyond a PC and a decent internet connection. Patient confidentiality is securely protected as no personal data is stored on the system and it is fully GDPR compliant.” To register email info@myclinic365. com or call 087 2809769.
Farranfore shop's protection screen to go nationwide | By Sean Moriarty A protection screen that was first installed in a local supermarket to protect both staff and customers could be rolled out nationwide. Moriarty’s Centra in Farranfore installed a Perspex screen at their points of sale on Monday morning. The screen was fitted by local engineering firm John O’Connor Welding and Engineering Works in Currow at short notice. Shop owner Mike Moriarty was looking for a way to protect both his staff and customers while also implementing the new social distancing rules brought about by COVID-19 restrictions that were put in
place across the country last week. He contacted the local engineering firm at 8am on Monday morning and the protection screen was completely installed by 11am that day. “It immediately raised the morale of staff who were concerned about working closely with people while this ugly thing is around,” Mr Moriarty told the Killarney Advertiser. “This about protecting staff and making customers more comfortable in the current crisis. This protects the person behind the till and the person outside the counter." The screen caught the attention of the Musgrave Group, the official wholesale suppliers of all Centra and SuperValu
stores in Ireland. “The managing director of Musgraves was on to me first thing on St Patrick’s Day, a day he should not have been working, and wanted to know all about it,” added Mike. “It looks like every Centra could be getting one. I know the shop in Currow got one shortly after me.” Moriarty’s Centra has taken other additional steps amid the current crisis including marking one-metre distances on the shop floor on the approach to the sales counter. Trolleys and shopping baskets are washed once an hour and staff placing products on shelves are surrounded by barriers to give them extra space to work.

| By Sean Moriarty In a letter from Seamus Hassett, the Regional Manager of the National Park, addressed to Killarney Municipal District members and seen by the Killarney Advertiser, stated that it was up to: “visitors to check themselves for ticks in order to prevent Lyme Disease”. Hassett was responding to a motion by
Cllr Maura Healy-Rae who is calling for such signs to be placed at all entrances of the National Park. The letter further stated that there was no proof of an increase in the number of ticks in the Park, that a higher public awareness of Lyme Disease leads to a perception that there is an increase in ticks.

What once was our daily routine is now no more with many working remotely, businesses being shut down everywhere, social distancing and hyper regular hand washing to curb the spread of the highly infectious disease – there’s no denying that it has ultimately changed the way we live. It’s hard to imagine that in this day and age with the scientific, technological and medical advances that this pandemic could even occur. And what makes it all the harder for each of us to comprehend is that - we cannot see it, and this does create an unsettling sense of fear. Currently it’s restricting us from seeing loved ones whose company we so dearly cherish. But, as long as we all work together – for the good of our communities - use social distancing, stay in self-isolation and practice good, regular hand hygiene – then the sooner this will all be over. Take China for example, they implemented a complete lock down early into the spread and it was so successful that they this week revealed there’s no new locally transmitted cases for the first time since the pandemic began -
marking a major turning point in the global battle to contain it. One thing I have witnessed in all of this recent chaos is how people have come together, risen to the challenges and selflessly offered their skills and services to each other in this time of great need. And long may this continue. For us here in the Killarney Advertiser, we are proud to support the community. This week we set out to bring you the latest news about how communities are helping each other. We haven’t missed an edition in our 47 years and we will continue to support our community going forward. We have also launched a 'Support Killarney' campaign and encourage community groups to get in touch so that we can get their message out there into the town and surrounds. Let us know what your friend, neighbour or family member has done to make a difference to someone’s life. We need to help get Killarney back on its feet, businesses reopened, workers back in their jobs, and by working together this can be achieved even quicker. Stay in touch with us by contacting the office on 064 6632215, on Facebook or Instagram, or emailing editor@killarneyadvertiser.ie. Take care, Michelle Crean

Kidney patients face additional stress as a result of restrictions Vulnerable kidney patients that need to attend urgent dialysis treatment in University Hospital Kerry (UHK) are one of the hardest people in society hit by the new movement and social distancing restrictions.
| By Sean Moriarty Dialysis patients attend the Tralee hospital three days a week. Some groups attend the service on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while others attend Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Killarney-based patients would usually share a taxi to get them to and from the hospital but the Irish Kidney Association’s Kerry Branch Patient Support Officer Theresa Looney says this no longer possible. “Their immune system is very vulnerable, they risk cross-contamination from other patients,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. Patients will now have to rely on family
members to ferry them to and from UHK. Cars will have to be disinfected before each leg of the journey adding time and stress to an already difficult situation. Theresa also warned that vital life-saving transplant operations are likely to be suspended as less and less medical staff and hospital beds become available as the crisis escalates - putting even more lives at risk. The local branch was forced to cancel its fundraising walk in Killarney National Park on Sunday, but the public is encouraged to support the work of the Irish Kidney Association and can Free text KIDNEY to 50300 to donate €4 and the Irish Kidney Association will receive a minimum of €3.60.

ADAPT service open to support women facing domestic abuse Kerry Women’s Refuge and Support Services, ADAPT, says they are committed to continuing to support women and children who live with domestic violence in the face of the challenges of the COVID-19 emergency. “It is our response in this emergency to let women know that we will continue to be available to offer support at this time,” Catherine Casey, General Manager, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Women across the county can ring our services and we will support in whatever way we can at this time. We will be doing everything we can to support women and to ensure women know what servic-
es are available and how they can access them.” Catherine reiterated that they realise that at this time that home is expected to be a place of safety and yet they know from their work that for many women and children it is very unsafe. “We realise that the pressures of confinement can make this time even more difficult for families living with coercive control and abuse.” ADAPT Kerry would encourage women to seek support by ringing them on 066 7129100, and if they feel they are in danger to ring the Gardai on 999. The ADAPT Kerry Charity Shop on Matt Talbot Road closed this week, she added.
GROUNDED: Ryanair's entire fleet will be grounded by Tuesday
Ryanair fleet to be grounded by Tuesday Ryanair is expected to ground all but a very limited number of its aircraft by next Tuesday in an effort to stop the spread of Coronavirus in Europe. | By Sean Moriarty The airline started grounding its fleet yesterday (Thursday) and by Tuesday only a handful of flights will serve unspecified Ireland to UK airports. Ryanair operates flights to several European destinations from Kerry Airport. These include daily services to London Stansted and London Luton as well as frequent connections to Berlin and Frankfurt in Germany. A new twice-weekly flight to Manchester was due to commence at the end of March.
'By Tuesday, March 24 we expect that most of, if not all, Ryanair Group flights will be grounded, except for a very small number of flights to maintain essential connectivity, mostly between the UK and Ireland', a statement issued by the airline said. Borders have been closed throughout Europe and there is no indication when travel restrictions will be lifted. Kerry Airport did not respond to a Killarney Advertiser request for a statement on the current crisis.

The first screening, ‘The Greatest Showman’, will take place at 6pm tonight and will be followed by ‘The Joker’ at 9pm. Saturday’s triple-bill includes a matinee at 12 noon, ‘How to Train your Dragon’, and will be followed by ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ at 3pm and ‘A Star is Born' at 6pm. Organisers have put in place a range of measures to meet social distancing requirements, however each show is limited to 100 cars which will have to park 1.5 metres apart. Tickets are only available online or by contactless credit card machines.
Kerry Mayor Niall Kelleher is asking all people who have recently returned from abroad to self-isolate to protect those around them. | By Sean Moriarty The Fianna Fail councillor was in America last week when Ireland was put into partial lock down to stop the spread of the current Coronavirus outbreak. The trip, aimed at connecting Irish and American business and tourism interests, mainly in Chicago, was nine months in the planning, but Mr Kelleher was caught on the wrong side of the Atlantic when the announcement was made last Thursday. He immediately booked a flight home and once here he put himself in a self-imposed 14-day quarantine as a precaution. He is not ill and is not carrying any signs of the virus. “Social distancing is the most important
thing, and following the HSE guidelines,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am doing this as a precaution. Anyone that as been away or been to Cheltenham should be doing the same thing." Despite living an isolated life, the Rathmore man is fielding an unprecedented number of calls from people concerned about the current crisis. On Wednesday, he answered 195 calls and countless text messages and emails. “There is a lot of people in difficult circumstances but I am very encouraged by the levels of volunteerism and care people have for others in their communities. When this will pass we will be able to build our lives again.”
ALONE calls on community to support older people ALONE, the organisation that supports older people, has received hundreds of calls to their COVID-19 support line for older people since it launched last week, and has extended its opening hours to include Saturdays and Sundays. The charity expects the daily number of phone calls to increase further as Department of Health advice to older people and vulnerable groups to reduce their contacts outside their home is implemented by older people in the community. ALONE is encouraging older people who need advice or support to call their support line, 0818 222 024 from 8am-8pm, seven days a week. The support line,
which is running in collaboration with the Department of Health and the HSE, is available to all older people including those who have not used ALONE’s services previously. “Every person has a responsibility to those who are vulnerable in their communities,” ALONE CEO, Seán Moynihan, said. “It is vital that the community pulls together now and that everyone plays their part to ensure older people and those who are most vulnerable are supported.” Contact ALONE on 0818 222 024 if you have concerns about your own well-being, or the wellbeing of an older person you know. Killarney Cardiac Response Unit is ready to help the national effort | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney Cardiac Response Unit is taking a range of measures to ensure its members remain safe in the current crisis without comprising the needs of those who need its services. As of last night, all members will not be allowed to attend an incident unless they are wearing a face mask. They are also considering setting up a control centre at its headquarters on Park Road. KCRU is a voluntary Unit of approximately 40 volunteers who respond to 999/112 emergency cardiac phone calls. They are activated once a cardiac call is made to ambulance control and cover an area of 7km from the centre of Killarney.
KCRU volunteers work alongside and are under the control of the National Ambulance Service. If a patient goes into cardiac arrest the volunteers provide care in those vital few minutes until the National Ambulance Service arrives on the scene. “Having spoken to a number of members we are considering setting up HQ as a coordination centre,” KCRU’s Carole Moran told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are considering doing this to help with the welfare and supply to older or vulnerable people should this situation deteriorate further. This will involve setting up PCs/phone lines and radio equipment and manning the centre to log calls and pass on to appropriate agencies. This is only being considered as an option at this point and may not be needed or approved. I have agreements in place to source much of the equipment already.”

ONLINE SENSATION: Paul Treyvaud's 'Cooking with the Treyvauds' has reached over 1.4 million people all over the world.
Killarney restaurateur's online show gets over 1.4 million hits | By Sean Moriarty An online cookery show presented by Killarney celebrity chef Paul Treyvaud has reached over 1.4 million people. Like many more in his profession, he decided to broadcast the show live on his Facebook feed, mainly as a bit of fun and to kill the boredom during the current partial lock down. Paul, who runs his eponymous restaurant on High St. was forced to close his premises earlier this week with the loss of eight jobs. He took the action before the Government announced that social distancing measures were to be put in place making it almost impossible to run a restaurant. Shortly after informing his staff, he took to social media and told his thousands of followers that he would continue to pay his staff until March 30 - despite the doors being closed. This resulted in a massive wave of support with many commentators saying they will come to Killar-
ney and support him when he re-opens. Treyvaud was so inspired by the kind words that he decided to run ‘Cooking with the Treyvauds’ live demonstrations on his Facebook page. A day before each broadcast he posts a list of all the ingredients needed for his next show. Earlier in the day, he explains the necessary preparations needed before announcing the actual time of the next live broadcast. One of his sons, Sean, operates the camera while his second son Dylan is the 'sous chef. “It started as a bit of fun to kill the boredom,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I have people tuning in from New York, Florida and Australia - it is nuts. The last show had a reach of 1.4 million views. This will keep Killarney on the map when we get out of this and people will come to my restaurant and other peoples' restaurants.” Killarney Advertiser readers can tune into the next show on: Facebook: OfficialPaulTreyvaud.
As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, top talented chefs Chad Byrne, Simon Deegan, Cyrille Durand, Gorka Arrieta, Andrew Foley, Mossey Laverty, Paul Stewart and Craig Lynch, found they suddenly had a huge amount of time on their hands. And in a bid to stay busy and keep themselves in a positive frame of mind they decided to offer their skills to the community. Now their planning to help one Meals on Wheels group who are trying to cope with the surge in demand for their services. Chad Byrne, who is Head Chef in the Brehon, said losing their jobs temporarily was a shock but they knew due to the health crisis Ireland is experiencing that it was coming. “The whole hospitality sector knew it was imminent – but it was still a shock,”
Chad told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We wanted to stay in the right frame of mental health by staying positive and helping the community that needs it most under safe conditions in line with the HSE. I’m fit, able and ready to go and I’ve gathered a team of seven chefs.” He said they tried one local group but at that time they didn’t need any volunteers. He had heard Tralee Meals on Wheels were in desperate need of volunteers so they’re now planning to travel over and split days between them. “There’s three of us going out today (Friday), three Saturday and one will help every day after that. I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be back in the kitchen where I feel most at home and it’s a rewarding thing to do.” Timmy Hickey from Flesk Meats has also volunteered his refrigerated vans for delivery, he added.
HELPING OTHERS: Pictured are five of the seven Killarney based chefs, Dan Moynihan, Chad Byrne, Simon Deegan Cyrille Durand and John Drummond, who plan to cook nutritious meals for the most vulnerable during the health crisis.
Casual Trading Bays at Market Cross At the March Killarney Municipal Area Meeting Councillor Michael Gleeson proposed that Kerry County Council would seek to precisely delineate Casual Trading Bays at the Market Cross, Killarney and thereafter ensure adherence. Kerry County Council replied that Casual Trading Bays currently in place at Mar-
ket Cross are delineated by studs on the ground. As part of the renewal of licences, licence holders will be made aware of the requirements to stay within the bays provided. The Traffic Wardens will monitor this for the coming season. Councillor Gleeson welcomed the positive response and said that it is important that high standards would prevail at this Killarney Town Centre location.

With a little extra time on our hands we can indulge a little and do some home pampering. Facials at home might not be as pampering or deep as a professional salon treatment but your skin will certainly still glow and feel brilliant. I’m pretty sure everyone has loads of exfoliators at home, facial gadgets you once purchased but never get around to using, and masks. Start by organising all your products and setting up at a table with two bowls, head band, cotton wool, facial sponges and two towels. One of the bowls is for very hot water to help steam your face. Start by cleansing the skin, face and décolletage with your Sothys cleanser or whatever brand you use. A milk cleanser is best for doing facials. It’s the start of your hydrating process and it’s extremely good at cleaning the skin at the same time as well as very nourishing. Spend about five to six minutes rubbing gently around the skin in a circular motion moving upwards, that way you are always lifting the skin. Gravity has a lot to answer for! Remove with warm water and a sponge. Repeat this step, which really allows thorough cleansing work on your skin, and the length of time allows you to increase circulation and lymphatic drainage; this brings a glow to the skin and illuminates dullness. Following the double cleanse use damp cotton wool and tone the skin. Toner should never sting your skin or feel anyway uncomfortable. If your current toner stings don’t use it and find a suitable
!
one. It should enhance the hydration of the skin and tighten pores. A lot more always depends on your skin’s requirement, but never skip this section if you really want your skin to glow. Whichever type of exfoliator you have available to you apply at this stage or make your own one with sugar and oil. After applying, leave it on your skin and steam for eight to 10 minutes. Put your head over a bowl of hot water and cover with a towel. If you have a run off exfoliator remove this one before steaming. If it has grains or an emulsion leave it on. After steaming, remove the exfoliator with sponges. Tone skin again with damp cotton wool. Start by applying eye cream only to the bone around the eye. Follow with a serum for the face and neck. Finish up with either a night or day cream. Jill Duggan, Killarney Toning and Beauty Studio

“Decision is in best interest of students”

| By Michelle Crean A Rathmore teacher says the Government’s announcement to cancel oral and practical performance tests is very welcome – considering the current uncertain times. Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh TD yesterday (Thursday) announced the cancellation of oral and practical performance tests of the State examinations which were originally scheduled to take place from Monday, March, 23 to Friday, April 3. All students who were due to take these tests will be awarded full marks for this portion of the exam. The decision was taken in light of the closure of schools as a result of the COVID-19 virus and it will be implemented by the State Examinations Commission (SEC). The change to the 2020 state examinations means all students who were due to take oral and practical performance tests in the following subjects will be given full marks for this part of the examination: Oral tests in Leaving Certificate Irish and the Modern Languages of French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Japanese, practical performance tests in Leaving Certificate Music and practical performance tests in Junior Certificate Music and Home Economics. Minister McHugh also confirmed changes to deadlines for students to complete project work and coursework in a number of subjects. Students were originally scheduled to complete these elements of the State examinations on a number of dates from Friday, March 20 to Friday, April 24, depending on the subject. Students will now be given until Friday, May 15 to complete this work. He also said the Department will continue to work with the State Examinations

Commission to monitor the COVID-19 situation in terms of its potential impact on the other later scheduled components of the state examinations. All schools have been asked to continue to plan lessons and, where possible, provide online resources for students or online lessons where schools are equipped to do so. Schools have also been asked to be conscious of students that may not have access to online facilities and to consider this actively in their responses. “We welcome the certainty that the announcement brings in what is a very uncertain time for our students,” Niamh Dwyer, PRO of the Kerry Branch of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors, told the Killarney Advertiser. “The decision to cancel orals and practical exams is unprecedented, but it has been taken with the best interest of students in mind in the extraordinary circumstances that we find ourselves in. The Minister has stated that the Department of Education and Science are working on the basis that the written exams will go ahead so we urge students to focus their attention on preparing in earnest for them.”
Free online ‘Happiness Workshop’ | By Michelle Crean A happiness workshop which was to take place in Killarney town has been moved online and is now being offered for free. Mindography, a Mindfulness through photography programme, takes place tomorrow (Saturday) from 10am-4pm. “At Focus On Happiness, we want to do our part to help people how we can,” Photographer Trevor O’Donoghue told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have decided to run our Mindogra-
phy workshop live and online and make this free of charge to the public. We can’t assist out in the community because we are in isolation, but we can share with people some tools we use to keep our minds calm.” He added that they can take up to one hundred people on the webinar, and those interested can email contact@focusonhappiness.ie to reserve their spot. “We will give them all the details on how to attend and login. They can also join our community at www.focusonhappiness.ie to learn even more.”
April’s Kerry Group Rás Mumhan cancelled The race organising committee of Kerry Group Rás Mumhan 2020 are disappointed to announce that the 2020 race will not proceed as scheduled on April 10 to 13, prompted by an abundance of caution to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 illness. The decision was not taken lightly, but, due to uncertainty surrounding the length of time that the current sanitary guidelines in relation to COVID-19 will be in operation it was deemed necessary to bring certainty to our affairs, explained Race Director, Tadhg Moriarty. “If the current guidelines are rolled over for a further two weeks it is possible that the race may not have adequate medical cover available and might not have a suitable level of Garda assistance to proceed. In such a scenario the race would have to be called off at short notice. This would be a situation that is unsatisfactory for everyone.” The race organisers are cognisant of the fact that stage racing is an expensive proposition for teams and riders, he added.
“The race organisers hope that by giving this early notice that teams and riders will be able to cancel any already booked travel and accommodation without penalty. A full refund of race entry fees will be made.” The race organisers will consult with Cycling Ireland to examine the possibility of hosting the race at a later stage during the 2020 season. listen Adam Lambert ‘Velvet’ Velvet’ is the upcoming fourth studio album by American singer Adam Lambert, scheduled to be released through More Is More and Empire Distribution. The news comes with the arrival of a new single, ‘Roses’, which features rhythm guitar by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and Chic mastermind Nile Rodgers. It will feature the singles ‘Feel Something’, ‘New Eyes’, ‘Comin’ in Hot’, ‘Superpower’, and ‘Roses’ with Nile Rodgers, as well as all the tracks featured on the Velvet: Side A EP, released in September 2019. Lambert described the album as “thirteen slinky numbers to catch a vibe to”.
The singer revealed last June that the time he’s spent touring with Queen has affected the writing he did for Velvet. “I don’t think I sat down and specifically was like, ‘Hey, I need to do a song that sounds like a Queen song’,” he said. “But I’m sure that now, over the course of the past seven years, by osmosis it’s kind of rubbed off on me a bit. And the thing with Queen music, too, is that you learn these songs still work today. They’re so timeless. And there’s a reason for that: There’s strong melody in all the songs. The concepts of all the songs are universal, about the human spirit and inclusive.”

RSA suspends driving tests All driving tests are to be suspended the Road Safety Authority (RSA) announced this week. Following the Government decision to introduce measures to delay the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) the Road Safety Authority (RSA) sought and has received advice from the public health authorities and suspended all driving tests since last Friday (March 13). The RSA has said that suspension will run until March 29 but that this will be kept under review. ‘We understand that this will cause inconvenience to our customers, but it is the correct measure to take given the public health advice concerning social distancing and given the personal nature of the driver testing service’, the RSA said in a statement. RSA driver testers are in are close proximity to members of the public, in a confined space, for up to 40 minutes on
each driving test. ‘Those who have a driving test scheduled during this period will have the test rescheduled free of charge and we will be directly in contact with candidates in the coming days. Updates around the re-starting of driving tests will be published on rsa.ie and RSA social media’. For those who wish to make a normal application for a driving test please be advised they are continuing to receive and process applications as usual. However, appointments will not be scheduled in such cases until the driver testing service resumes. ‘Where there are exceptional circumstances eg. emergency and essential service drivers, needing a driving test, we will make all reasonable efforts to accommodate these customers’.
HSE launch recruitment drive | By Michelle Crean The HSE has launched a recruitment drive for healthcare professionals from all disciplines who are not already working in the public health service to register to be ‘On Call for Ireland’. The State body will be creating extra hospital and care beds and will need extra hands to provide the care that’s needed – saying that they need your help to meet the challenge ahead. ‘Maybe you aren’t a healthcare professional, maybe you’re studying to be one, or maybe you have other skills to offer or just want to volunteer to do your bit if needed,’ the HSE has said.
‘Hopefully we won’t need to call, and if we do, we may not need every one of you. But knowing you are there if we do will make all the difference’. To get more information about being ‘On Call for Ireland’, go to www.hbsrecruitmentservices.ie. You can read more about the people they need, how this will work, and fill in the enquiry form.
In the past few weeks I have been asked to recommend some plants for shady, damp areas. Salix chaenomeloides and Salix magnifica are two of my favourite willows for damp areas. The first has large pink catkins which glow in the sunshine. They are about two inches long, and very impressive! The second willow is a giant leaved variety. As a structural plant in the back of a border it is a beauty. The leaves are about 20cm long, leathery and in the spring have a purple tint. Next, I would advise members of the Cornus or dogwood family. Cornus kousa is a small tree, well able to cope with damp, though it does need a little shelter. The flowers, which are actually bracts, range from white to pink, and though they take a few years to flower, they are well worth the wait! Most people are familiar with the more common dogwood, which produces bright green, orange or red stems which are very decorative in the winter. More than that, though, they thrive in wet conditions. Then, the smallest of the cornus family is Cornus Canadensis. It is a groundcover, with white flowers in the summer and bright red berries in the autumn. The foliage turns a spectacular red in late autumn. Pachysandra is another excellent choice as groundcover, especially under trees. It has glossy green leaves all year round and small white flowers for months. Again damp shady conditions are suitable. There are a selection of perennials
which thrive in damp spots. Darmera is a favourite of mine. In the early spring, pink flowers appear as if from nowhere on 60-90cm stems. The large saucer shaped leaves appear later, and are very useful in flower arrangements. Again, they become a dark red in the autumn. It spreads happily, but is not invasive. It is a fabulous plant near a pond, as are varieties of the ligularia. Again, large leaved, but in the case of the Ligularia they are a deep purple. Bright yellowy-orange flowers appear above them, and the contrast could not be better. Coming into season are the candelabra primulas. The clumps of leaves may reach about 30cm, but the flowers are much taller. Many colours are available, from delicate cream to hot pink. If you like your primulas big, try the Himalayan primrose, Primula florindae. It grows to a meter in height with the flowers even taller. They are happy with their feet permanently wet. Primula vialli is often forgotten about though it is a lovely plant. Growing to about 20cm, with the flowers reaching 50cm, it is a tidy plant with spectacular cone shaped flowers of purple tipped with red. And last but not least, Rodgersia, or Bear’s Breeches, are a wonderful plant for wet shady areas. Originally green with white flowers, there are now varieties such as Chocolate wings and Bronze peacock which have purple/bronze leaves, and flowers which range from peach to cerise. The leaves are like strong horse chestnut leaves – very striking!

WhatsApp donates $1 million to International Fact-Checking Network
St Patrick’s Day still celebrated around Ireland
WhatsApp has launched a Coronavirus Information Hub and donated $1m to International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) to support the global fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.
Hundreds of children and parents, following the catastrophic pandemic, were eager to do what they could to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland.
The Information Hub at whatsapp. com/coronavirus is to provide simple, actionable guidance for health workers, educators, community leaders, non-profit organisations, local Governments and local businesses that rely on WhatsApp to communicate. The site also offers general tips and resources for users around the world to reduce the spread of rumours and connect with accurate health information. While people need to spend time apart, WhatsApp will continue to provide a simple, reliable, and secure way for people to communicate. In addition, WhatsApp is working with the WHO and UNICEF to provide messaging hotlines for people around the world to use directly, which will provide reliable information and will be listed on the WhatsApp Coronavirus Information Hub. WhatsApp’s $1m grant to the IFCN will support fact-checking for the #CoronaVirusFacts Alliance, which spans more than one hundred local organisations in at least 45 countries. Over the last year, WhatsApp has worked to bring over a dozen fact-checking organisations
Although St Patrick's Day parades and activities at home and abroad were unable to go ahead due to restrictions put on trying to contain the Coronavirus pandemic, festivities were still plentiful. Many families celebrated with their own parades across the country. Images of the miniature gatherings were shared on social media using the hashtag #RTEVirtualParade. The annual campaign, now 10-yearsold still went ahead, where famous buildings and monuments all over the world went green for St Patrick's Day, in an attempt to make the most of Ireland's day on the world stage. “We are deeply grateful to Ireland supporters across the world who, despite unprecedented challenges, are marking St Patrick’s Day and remembering Ireland in a very positive light," Niall Gibbons, Tourism Ireland's CEO, said. "We hope our Global Greening will bring a little positivity and hope to people everywhere and remind them that, if we all do the right thing now by following advice of our medical experts, this crisis will pass."

directly onto WhatsApp so they can crowdsource and report on rumours that may be circulating on various messaging services including WhatsApp or SMS. The grant will support training to use the advanced features within WhatsApp Business, including the WhatsApp Business API. Expanding the presence of these IFCN certified fact-checking organisations will help ensure local communities are aware and responding to potential harmful rumours. “We know that our users are reaching out on WhatsApp more than ever at
this time of crisis, whether it’s to friends and loved ones, doctors to patients, or teachers to students,” Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp, said. “We wanted to provide a simple resource that can help connect people at this time. We are also pleased to be able to partner with the Poynter Institute to help grow the amount of fact-checking organisations on WhatsApp and to support their life-saving work to debunk rumours. We will also continue to work directly with health ministries around the world for them to provide updates right within WhatsApp.”
MEP Kelly criticises Trump’s trade tactics amidst global crisis Sean Kelly MEP and leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament has expressed his sincere disappointment at US President Donald Trump’s decision to increase trade tariffs against EU aircraft at a time when international cooperation is needed in combatting the global crisis due to the Coronavirus. The Ireland South MEP expressed deep regret at the decision to impose an additional trade duty on aircraft
imported from the EU from 10 percent to 15 percent from Wednesday. “At a time when world leaders should be showing solidarity and working to prevent further economic pain at this most difficult and uncertain time for the global population, President Trump continues to act in an aggravating manner. “This is a dire example of a time when we need a cohesive multilateral approach, not a moment to launch further trade wars that will inevitably hit
the pocket of exporters again. As the Taoiseach said in his address to the nation: ‘we are all in this together’.” Mr Kelly, a Member of the Parliament’s Trade Committee, said the tariff hike would hit European aerospace company, Airbus, in particular, but is another severe blow to the airline industry which is now in collapse with aircraft grounded and many companies seeking state aid to avoid bankruptcy in the wake of travel bans.

Call for restraint on alcohol use at home amid COVID-19 pandemic
EQUALITY: Mary Immaculate College has been awarded Athena SWAN Institution Bronze Award. Photo: Brian Arthur
Mary Immaculate College awarded Athena SWAN Institution Bronze Award Following 18 months of data-gathering, gap analysis and self-assessment, leading to the development of a strong and ambitious Action Plan, Mary Immaculate College was delighted to learn that it is to be awarded the Athena SWAN Institution Bronze Award. In a major national initiative supported by the Higher Education Authority, the Athena SWAN Charter was launched in Ireland in early 2015. Figures published by the Higher Education Authority highlight gender inequality as an issue for the sector. Across Irish universities, only 24 percent of professors are women. In institutes of technology, women make up 44 percent of academic staff but just 29 percent of senior academic staff. The Charter’s initial remit was to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research. In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise
work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women. “At MIC we are deeply committed to progressing and embedding gender equality in management, academic, professional and support services and to that end we are delighted at this public recognition of our concerted efforts to address gender equality since becoming a member of the Athena SWAN Charter in 2018,” Professor Eugene Wall, President of Mary Immaculate College, said. “Our Executive Team was restructured and female representation has increased from 13 percent to 50 percent. Two dedicated posts were created to lead the Athena SWAN process in the college and we look forward to appointing a Director of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Inter-Culturalism very shortly.”
Gardai appealing for witnesses following fatal collision in Mallow Gardaí in Mallow are investigating a two-vehicle, fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the N20 in the Ballydahin area of Mallow, Co Cork on Wednesday morning. At approximately 9.30am, a car collided with a lorry which was travelling in the opposite direction. The coroner was notified and her body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have information regarding the collision, particularly any road users with dash cam footage who were travelling on the N20 near Mallow between 8am and 10am to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
Drinkaware, the national charity working to prevent and reduce alcohol misuse in Ireland, is encouraging the public to manage time spent at home or in self-isolation without alcohol, given that 50 percent of Irish adults cite ‘coping’ as motivation for their drinking habits. Drinkaware has the following advice to help support people who find themselves isolated at home, without a routine, feeling anxious or under pressure and who are at risk of using alcohol as a means to cope: Limit or cut out alcohol completely, have plenty of non-alcoholic alternatives in the house and put them within easy reach, store alcohol out of sight or remove it from your shopping list for now, create a list of activities to do instead: listen to a podcast, read a book or start a DIY project you’ve been putting off. Talk and text: check in with friends and family as much as you can by phone, video, text and social media. Keeping in touch can have a positive impact on your mood and ability to deal with problems. Keep active by getting out for a walk in your local area every day. Cook a healthy meal as a balanced nutritious diet is just as important for mental health as it is for physical
health. Adults living in Ireland aged 18-24 (64%) and 25-34 (58%) are most likely to report using alcohol as a way to cheer up when in a bad mood or feeling stressed, as well as to forget about problems or because it helps when feeling depressed or anxious. “Drinkaware supports the Government in strongly advising against house parties or similar social gatherings,” Sheena Horgan, Drinkaware CEO, said. “This pandemic is an uncertain time and people are naturally worried about their own health and the health of their loved ones. We know that people often turn to alcohol as a way to deal with the stress and anxiety they are feeling. We also already know that home drinking is the new norm in Ireland and as recent images and media stories have shown, many people are stocking up on alcohol. We’re asking people to be especially mindful of their drinking and even explore their sober curious side over the coming days and weeks, even if boredom is likely to set in for many of us. What we are facing right now is not about any of us alone, it’s about all of us. We must all do what we can to protect and support our communities and country, and that starts in our own homes.”

Three simple tips to practice at home COVID-19 is causing a lot of anxiety as it’s a big threat to everyone’s health. In addition to following the recommendations of WHO and HSE you can also improve your immune system by: 1. Increasing your quantity and quality of sleep. Reduce screen time in the evening, keep your room cool and dark, and if you can get away without an alarm clock, do so for the next while. 2. Nutrition. Look at how you can increase your fruit and veg intake, and reduce inflammatory foods such as processed foodstuffs. There’s no
harm in supplementing with extra vitamins, but vitamins can’t compensate for a poor diet! 3. Look after your mental health. If you find yourself worrying about things for the one hundredth time, ask yourself “is this useful?”. Spend some time each day sitting quietly to give your brain a break from constant inputs, and message loved ones regularly to keep up your social connections! Take care everyone, and if you need any advice at this time, please email me directly on brian@activate.ie.
A circus that was due to perform in Killarney this week is stranded in Tralee as a result of COVID-19 restrictions and urgently needs diesel or electricity. | By Sean Moriarty Circus Vegas, which is one of Ireland’s longest-running, is stranded in the Fels Point area of Tralee and is calling on the local Council to allow it to connect to the local electricity mains or for locals to donate diesel so they can heat and light their caravans. The touring circus, operated by the famous Courtney family, is one of three circus families in Ireland, and was due to perform in Killarney this week as part of the town’s St Patrick’s Day Festival. The Fossett and Duffy families each run a circus, while two different branches of the Courtney family run separate tours. Circus Vegas was only able to perform on Tuesday and Wednesday last week before they were shut down. As a result, they have not earned a penny since last Wednesday night (March 11). There are 29 people currently stuck in Tralee as they do not have enough diesel to move on. Many of their performers are from Eastern Europe and cannot return home because of travel restrictions in their homelands. They cannot move from Tralee either as they have already siphoned diesel from their fleet of trucks to power generators to keep their caravans warm. Management were able to secure Social Welfare payments for some of the staff so they have money for food. They were already in difficult times as they were unable to erect their Big Top during the many storms to hit Ireland in recent months and have only worked for a total of two weeks since Christmas. They are looking for permission to connect to an ESB-owned power-point nearby but so far have failed to secure the required permits. “We operate on a week-by-week basis,” Stephen Courtney told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are ok for food and water, we need diesel or if anyone knows someone high up in the Council or ESB, ask them if we can connect to the power

box. We cannot do it without a permit and we are not going do anything illegal.” Circus Vegas has been offered a field near Killarney by a local businessman but it is unable to move as trucks are currently without diesel. Even if they did move they are left with the same problem as any new location would require either a diesel or electricity supply. “If I moved the whole lot I risk getting in trouble with the Gardai, they will be asking me why am I moving everything – it won’t look right,” added 48-year-old Mr Courtney who was born into Circus traditions. “We don’t get any money from the government, we are not considered performing arts by the Arts Council. This could be the end of Circuses in Ireland.” If anyone can help the Circus, either in terms of diesel or securing the correct permits to connect to the mains box in Fel’s Point, Tralee should contact Stephen Courtney on 085 8637495.

Killarney Hardware stays open so people can stay active Killarney Hardware is going to stay open as long as possible so people can have something to do at home in the days and weeks ahead. | By Sean Moriarty As more and more people are being laid off from their jobs, Manager Anne Marie O’Sullivan-Darcy is concerned that the inevitable boredom could lead to mental health issues. Her family-owned shop on the top of College Street supplies everything from paint to gardening equipment. The current situation could present the perfect opportunity to get jobs done around the home. “We have loyal customers for over 40 years’ and we do not want to let anybody down,” she told the Killarney Ad-
vertiser. “This is about keeping people active, and if they are only out cutting a few branches it has to be good for them.” Anne Marie stressed that her reason for staying open was to give people something to do at home and her decision was not a commercial one. The store will operate correct social distancing recommendations in line with HSE guidelines – only three people will be allowed into the shop at any one time – and they will also offer a free home delivery service. “If someone wants just a packet of nails, we will deliver it,” she added.

DONATATION: This Ferrari factory in Modena, Italy has been closed due to COVD-19 restriction but the Italian industrial family that own the famous brand have donated over €10 million in cash, goods and services
Ferrari family’s €10m donation to Italian health effort The Italian business family that owns such household names as Ferrari, Fiat, Juventus Football Club and La Stampa group of newspapers has made a €10 million donation to the Italian Civil Protection Department. In response to the COVID-19 emergency, the Agnelli family and its companies have put in place a series of measures to support the Italian national health service in its care of the sick and to provide assistance to those who currently require it, or who will do so in the future. As well as the financial donation, the family has used its international business connections to source vital supplies and equipment.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles have sourced and purchased a total of 150 ventilators, alongside other medical equipment from various overseas suppliers, and are preparing for their air transport to Italy. The family’s vehicle rental company Leasys has provided the Italian Red Cross and ANPAS (the Italian National Association for Public Assistance) with a fleet of vehicles for the distribution of food and medicine to the sick, the elderly and people in need of assistance across Italy. La Stampa has set up a long-distance learning scheme for schools unable to provide a proper service as a result of the emergency.

World health crisis hits car production across Europe Car manufacturers across Europe are closing factories as a result of COVID-19 restrictions while in Spain employees at the Mercedes Benz plant took matters into their own hands and stopped a production line themselves. They were getting increasingly concerned about the lack of direction by management and poor health and safety strategies at a Vito van factory in the Basque region. Hundreds of workers downed tools while chanting “Shut down now”. The France-based Groupe PSA which
HALTED: Car production has been halted across Europe as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.
owns three brands sold in Ireland, Citroen, Peugeot and Opel, was the first automotive manufacturer to take action. It announced on Monday that it was temporarily shutting all of its European plants for an indefinite period. The French firm closed one if its French and one of its Spanish plants on Monday and by Thursday of this week all 15 European factories were shut. The UK’s Luton plant where Opel and Vauxhall vans are made, a factory that employs a lot of second-generation Irish workers, was the last one to close yesterday (Thursday). On Tuesday, Ford announced it is to temporarily suspend vehicle and engine production at its manufacturing sites in continental Europe. Effective from yesterday, it is expected that this action will continue for a number of unspecified weeks. The Volkswagen Group which includes Audi, SEAT and Skoda, amongst other well-known brands announced a raft of closures and suspensions too. Its Spanish, Portuguese and Slovakian plants began shutting down last night and its Belgian, Hungarian and selected German sites will be closed by Monday. Skoda has reduced production at its
Czech Republic factories. The German group was first to admit an issue in the supply chain and that parts were getting increasingly harder to source and that sales were also being impacted. “The spread of Coronavirus in Europe is increasingly having an adverse impact on the demand situation,” said Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Operation Officer of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. “At the same time, it is becoming increasingly difficult to supply our plants with outsourced parts. For this reason, we have decided to run production down in a coordinated way from the end of the late shift on Thursday. We are convinced that this will also be in the interests of our employees who are becoming increasingly concerned about the spread of Corona.” Toyota stopped production at its plant in
Valenciennes, France on Wednesday for an undetermined period. The Japanese firm announced a two-week shut-down at its factory in Portugal. Renault shut all of its industrial sites in France on Monday evening until further notice. The situation at other plants in Europe would depend on conditions in each country, Renault said. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is suspending production at six Italian sites until March 27 and confirmed its Polish and Serbian factories will stop production too. Ferrari has closed two plants until the same date. However, it is not all doom and gloom as BMW said its European plants are operating as normal and Volvo said its Swedish plants are not affected by the Coronavirus at this point. Hyundai’s Czech Republic plant is working as usual too.

New advice from Asthma Society The Asthma Society has added a new Frequently Asked Questions section on its website to help the 11,204 people with asthma and those with COPD in Kerry cope with the Coronavirus outbreak. The Society is advising people to be extra vigilant in their asthma management and follow the advice set out by the HSE, amidst growing Coronavirus concerns. The HSE has advised people from vulnerable groups, which includes people with a long-term respiratory illness, to ‘self-separate’. They're also strongly recommending that patients, their carers’ and close family and friends, follow the HSE’s advice on how to avoid spreading the virus. The Asthma Society has extended the hours of their free COPD and Asthma Advice line to meet increased demand, available on 1800 44 54 64 and www.asthma.ie.

Stephen Faughnan, Chairman of the Irish Property Owners Association has stated that all tenants who find themselves in the unfortunate situation of losing their jobs should be afforded access to the existing HAP scheme. "The Government need to put the resources and structures in place to deal with the likely requirement for this support and that the IPOA's members are happy to work with tenants who need to move to the HAP system," he stated. "This will necessitate cutting through the red tape that currently exists with the HAP system to ensure that tenants and landlords don’t suffer irreversible hardship from the C-19 crisis."

| By Adam Moynihan

Filling the void With our beloved games suspended due to COVID-19, the sporting community must (figuratively) come together now more than ever, writes Adam Moynihan.
First things first: I must apologise to Liverpool fans for my flagrant use of the v-word in the headline. If you’re a Merseyside Red, ‘void’ is more profane and more hurtful than any of its four-letter cousins right now, especially when preceded by the words ‘null and’. Like the vast majority of competitions here and abroad, the 2019/20 Premier League campaign is shrouded in uncertainty. Liverpool were cruising towards their first title in 30 years before the COVID-19 outbreak brought things to a screeching halt, and now certain clubs are apparently pushing for the entire season to be scrapped. In the interest of fairness, Jürgen Klopp’s team should surely be awarded the championship regardless of what happens… Although, in the interest of comedy, maybe they shouldn’t? They say laughter is the best medicine…
SHUTDOWN
Topically negative connotations notwithstanding, a ‘void’ is exactly what we’re currently facing. Put yourself in the shoes of a local sportsperson. No collective training with your teammates. No games to play (or to look forward to). No live sport on TV. No League Sunday. No Match of the Day. No NBA. No fantasy football. If your life revolves around sport – which is the case for many people, young and old, in a county like Kerry – this shutdown has more than likely left you in a rut. Of course, it goes without saying that there are more important things to be worried about. In fact, it doesn’t take a pandemic for that to be the case. In the grand scheme of all things, sport is just a little thing. It’s not life or death. But it would also be wrong to dismiss sport as a mere triviality. For many of
us, it is absolutely central to our mental health. It’s a release. It’s an escape from the pressures of everyday life. It gives our existence more meaning. It brings us closer together. It gives us a social outlet and helps forge lifelong friendships. It keeps us active and physically fit. Take sport away entirely and life, for billions of people, begins to look a whole lot different. And that’s what we’re coping with at the moment, albeit on a temporary basis.
SO, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO?
I’m slow to give advice in the current climate because there are plenty of unqualified people chiming in with their hot takes as it is. When it comes to anything coronavirus related, get your information from the HSE, the government and reputable journalists with knowledge of the situation. Take everything else with a pinch of salt. Many of us will be working from home and self-isolating in the coming weeks - a transition that might prove difficult
for some at first - but one positive is that we can all stay active. Training might be cancelled and the gyms might be closed but there’s nothing stopping us from going for a walk or a run by ourselves. And, luckily for us, Killarney just so happens to be one of the greatest towns in the entire world to do that. If, like me, you’ll need your fix of sport during the extended period indoors, I’ve shared some cool online resources and a selection of the best documentaries to watch on p37. (If watching Ireland beating England in Euro ‘88 doesn’t lift your spirits, nothing will.) Above all else, I would encourage you all to support your friends, teammates and clubmates at this challenging time. Text them and see how they’re doing. Share memes in the group chat. Have FaceTime tins. Stay away from each other, of course, but be there for each other too. When we come out the other side of this, our bonds, and our appreciation for the games we all love, will be stronger than ever.

follows Ireland’s greatest boxing champion, Katie Taylor, as she attempts to rekindle her career after a year of frustrating setbacks. Taylor, a reserved individual who normally shuns the limelight, opens up her personal life to the filmmakers, and the audience, and the result is a wonderful portrait of a fiercely driven athlete. A brilliant documentary about a truly brilliant Irishwoman.
LAST CHANCE U (Series - 4 seasons, 31 episodes)
This Netflix original tracks the trials and tribulations of the American football team at East Mississippi Community College, a junior college with a reputation for taking on troubled student athletes with goals of earning a full scholarship at a top university, and maybe even playing in the NFL. Under the stewardship of their egotistical and overbearing coach Buddy Stephens and their passionate academic advisor Britanny Wagner, the players at Last Chance U must perform on the field and in the classroom if they want to move on to the next level. For those who don’t make it, the consequences could be tragic.
SUNDERLAND ‘TIL I DIE (Series - 1 season, 8 episodes)
Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a top professional football club? Sunderland ‘Til I Die holds the (often shocking) answers. Shot during the club’s disastrous 2017/18 EFL Championship campaign, this flyon-the-wall style documentary paints an illuminating picture of a major club in complete disarray. Misbehaving players, struggling coaches, stressed out administrators and angry supporters – this what happens when things go badly wrong, and seeing it first-hand is a real eye opener for sports fans and non-sports fans alike.
KATIE (Movie – 129 minutes)

Reeling in the Years
Some kind soul by the name of Evin Ryan has catalogued all of the Reeling in the Years episodes and shared them on Google Drive. Find the link on Adam Moynihan’s Twitter page (@AdamMoynihan). Reeling in the Years may not necessarily be a sports show, but you’re sure to come across all of the most significant sports stories in this country since 1962. If, for some reason, you’re a massive fan of Jack Rodwell and don’t want your opinion of him to be completely shattered, maybe this one isn’t for you.
LOSERS (Series - 1 season, 8 episodes)
The history books are written by the winners. Isn’t it time the losers had their say? This fascinating docuseries tells the story of eight famous sportspeople who suffered the ignominy of defeat (sometimes in unbelievable circumstances) but lived to tell the tale. From boxer Michael Bentt, who quit the sport after a string of losses, to golfer Jean van de Velde, who famously choked at the 1999 British Open, Losers gives a
voice to some less successful or less fortunate athletes whose names have ostensibly been tarnished by failure.
ICARUS (Movie – 121 minutes)
Director Bryan Fogel sets out to prove how simple it is to get away with doping in cycling by using himself as a lab rat – and ends up uncovering a major Olympic cheating scandal in the process. An already interesting documentary takes an incredible turn when a meeting with the head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory opens a Pandora’s box of systemic cheating that leads all the way to the Kremlin. A gripping watch.
MOTOR SPORT |
I rish Tarmac Championship in disarray
With the West Cork Rally cancelled at the last minute last weekend and the Easter weekend Circuit of Ireland now also postponed, the future of the 2020 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship is in doubt. The Rally of the Lakes should be round four of the series but it is too early to say if this event will run on its scheduled May weekend slot. | C ircuit of Kerry postponed The Circuit of Kerry Rally was the first local motorsport event to fall foul of restrictions put in place to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Although the event is currently outside the restriction which is set to end on March 29, the club felt it would not be able to deliver the rally in the short space
of time assuming, in the unlikely event, that all restrictions will be lifted by this time. “We would like to thank all the competitors who entered to date, our main sponsor, The Rose Hotel, our associated sponsors, volunteers and all the residents along our route for your support and patience during the last few months,” clerk of the course Eoin Duffin said. |
N agle’s European tour on hold
Paul Nagle and Craig Breen were due to contest a packed programme of European events beginning with the Azores Rally at the end of March. That event is now rescheduled until late September. Their next scheduled event was San Remo Rally in Italy which was set for April 2 to 4. The Killarney/Waterford crew won this
event last year and were due to defend their title but events in Italy are unlikely to get back to normal for the foreseeable future. The following weekend they were due to tackle the first of two rallies in Belgium but both the TAC Rally and Rally Wallonia set for the May bank holiday weekend have been canned by the Belgian authorities. | B rowne’s return Firies engineer Richard Browne’s return to international rallying was also scuppered as the international coronavirus dictated shutdowns. He was the lead engineer on Andreas Mikkelsen’s Volkswagen Polo R5 as the Norwegian was set to make a surprise return to competition on last weekend’s Spa Rally in Belgium. However, the event got pulled at the last minute and, despite a successful test in
the run-up to the rally, they never got to the start line. | M otorcycle racing Neither Motorcycling Ireland nor Mondello Park has issued a statement on the future of motorcycle racing at the County Kildare track but they could run events behind closed doors without spectator involvement. That is what happened over the weekend when the Dunlop Masters Superbike Championship held its traditional pre-season test at the venue near Naas. Killarney’s Kevin Coyne was one of many Kerry-based racers who took part in the test. The 17-year-old was the fastest junior rider in the SuperSport class on Sunday. The season is scheduled to get underway on the weekend of March 28 and 29, but like everything else, plans remain fluid as the current crisis is assessed.
