Tributes paid to talented local actor Donie Courtney

Tributes have been paid to one of Killarney’s best-loved sons, Donie Courtney (52), who died after a short illness last Saturday. |B y Michelle Crean and Sean Moriarty The untimely passing of the talented actor, renowned drama coach, playwright, producer, director and performer, has sent shockwaves through the town and beyond. The Ardshanavooley man, son of former town councillor Michael and his wife Sheila Courtney, was best known for his one man show 'God Has No Country' as part of the Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Society. Most recently he had set up the West End House School of Arts in Killarney, a professional acting school with his close friend and Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender. “He stays with me always,” Michael Fassbender, who Donie first introduced to acting, said in a tribute to his friend. “I met Donie when I was 17-years-old. The encounter was something that would change my life immeasurably. We remained firm friends ever since," Michael said. “The first thing that struck me about Donie was how he engaged with me as a peer and not a teenager. He had a positivity to him that was absolutely infectious and an endless generosity both as a performer and human being. His talent was as much a force of nature as it was eminent. His sense of human nature was uncanny. “He is remembered by his family first and foremost, which for him was where his inspiration, joy and heart belonged. The rest of us will feel blessed and lucky for whatever time we’ve been able to share in his company. “West End House School of Arts is Donie’s legacy and we will do our very best to honour him through our work in this

unique place that he created. For me he will always be my mentor. I will call on him in times of hardship and crisis and celebrate moments of joy with him. He stays with me always.”

PROUD KILLARNEY MAN

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Marie Moloney, said that it "was with deep shock and profound sadness" that she learned of the passing, at such a young age, of Donie Courtney. "He was a wonderfully gifted actor and drama coach and a very proud and accomplished Killarney man,” she said. "As chairperson of the Board of Management at Killarney Community College, I have been very aware of the great work Donie did with students, including some aspiring actors, through the classes he hosted in his position as director of the West End School of Arts. "His passion, commitment and dedication to his craft was so evident as he worked so enthusiastically alongside the young students and they learned so much from him."

CREATIVE FORCE IN ARTS

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce said Donie will be remembered with great fondness, appreciation and gratitude in his home town where he had always been such a creative force in arts, in culture and in life.

The Chamber said Donie was a hugely positive and important influence on so many young people who had aspirations of making it to stage or screen, either as a potential career or as a hobby. President, Niall Kelleher, said Donie, who later moved to Castlenock in Dublin, never once forgot his roots or the people of Killarney. “The people loved his magnificent presentation of 'God Has No Country' and the fact that it was one of our own that kept the story of the monsignor alive made it extra special,” Mr Kelleher said. “He was forever a performer with a rich talent for anything he felt inclined to turn his hand to. “Friends of his from his teenage years have been speaking of his great breakdancing exploits and his prowess as a basketballer in the town leagues. Then, of course, Donal formed the Bricriú theatre group, staging several dramas in local venues and introducing so many young people to the stage in the mid-1990s.”

MONSIGNOR HUGH O’FLAHERTY SOCIETY

"It was with great shock and sadness that we heard of the untimely passing of our dear friend Donie Courtney," Gerry O'Grady from the Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Society said. "In late 2012, Donie, the son of our found-

ing Chairman the late Cllr Michael Courtney, contacted the O’Flaherty Society to advise us of his intentions to write, produce and perform a one man play on the life of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty. “The title of the play would be the monsignor’s motto of 'God Has No Country'. True to his word, Donie performed his play for a three-night run in the Mangerton Room theatre at the Great Southern Hotel. It was a remarkable piece of writing and acting, attracting high praise from all who saw it."

ACTING LEGACY

Donie graduated from Dublin’s Gaiety School of Acting in 1991 and acquired an MA in Theatre Practice from the University of Maynooth. Acting credits include 'The Importance of Being Earnest', 'Philadelphia, Here I Come!', 'The Man from Clare', 'The Crazy Wall', 'The Chastitute', 'In High Germany', 'Homefront', 'Antigone', and 'Waiting for Godot' and TV work such as 'The Tudors', 'Fair City', 'Acceptable Risk', 'Cutting Grass' and 'Marú'. Donal is survived by his wife Adeleine, his children, Jonah and Líla, the extended Courtney family and the team at the West End School of Arts. A private cremation service for family and close friends took place on Wednesday in Glasnevin Crematorium Chapel.

Business dinner honours Pat O'Leary | By Michelle Crean The former Managing Director of Liebherr was honoured at a gala dinner event which celebrated inspiring Kerry business owners.

BRONZE: The 'Operation Red' team from St Brigid's were awarded third place in the national Young Social Innovators awards. Pictured were: Claire McCarthy, Rachel Wallace, Aoife Cronin, Lucy Spellman, and Anna Cashman.

Top awards for innovative students Killarney students proved that their projects can make a positive impact after being honoured at the Young Social Innovators of the Year Ireland (YSI) Awards. | By Michelle Crean The five members of 'Operation Red' in St Brigid's Secondary School were celebrating this week after receiving a national Bronze Award for their project which is raising awareness about the lack of knowledge surrounding menstrual disorders. Their goal is to encourage open discussion on these issues, so no woman ever feels alone. The team will receive a prize bursary of €750, which can be put towards developing their idea and increasing the impact of their innovation. The girls' project was one of 34 shortlisted from over 400 YSI groups around Ireland. "As part of our project we're in the process of developing resources for the SPHE classes in our school," Transition Year student Anna Cashman told the Killarney Advertiser. "We'll try it here as a pilot project and branch out to other schools." She added that plans so far include educating students by putting an information booklet together using HSE and NHS advice. "It's important to have the right informa-

tion as it's a very under researched issue. We have had a positive response to it." Cait Fitzgerald Healy from YSI arrived to the school as a surprise and presented the girls with their trophy. Teacher and mentor Catherine O'Donoghue also received the 'Let them Shine' award for her involvement with YSI over the last five years.

MAKE OUR WORLD SAFER AWARD

Picking up the 'Make Our World Safer Award', a team from St Brendan’s College was recognised for its 'One Punch Can Kill' project, which aims to combat toxic masculinity and raise awareness amongst young men of the seriousness of ‘one punch attacks’. The group examined the route cause of the issue and wanted to raise awareness that spontaneous and random 'one punch attacks' can have serious and life-changing consequences. The team embarked on media outreach, designed and delivered student workshops, created a poster campaign, held an Anti Violence Week and is currently working on a children’s book .

Pat O’Leary received the Lifetime Achievement Award 2022 at the Business Leaders’ Gala Dinner and Awards in the Rose Hotel in Tralee on Thursday night last. The event, which had taken a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, was a glitzy affair with the aim of honouring the entrepreneurial spirit and achievements of Kerry-based business leaders. Over 180 of Kerry’s business, enterprise, and public representatives attended to award and honour three deserving business champions which also included Ned Harty, founder of Dairymaster who received the Business Leader of the Year 2022 and Ogie Sheehy and Kathleen Wall, founders of ViClarity, who accepted the Emerging Business Leader of the Year 2022 award. Former Taoiseach Enda Kenny congratulated the winners as he delivered the after-dinner speech. "We are delighted to be able to recognise the achievements of our award recipients and thank them in person for their role in creating meaningful employment and

opportunities for the people of the county," Brid McElligott, Chair of the Kerry Innovation Centre who acted as master of ceremonies, said. "Each of these leaders has demonstrated incredible entrepreneurial drive, determination, and ability, as they spearheaded the growth of a global business from Kerry.” Previous recipients of awards at this event include Donie Ring, Tomas Garvey, Brian McCarthy, and the Stack family (Tricel). This event is made possible through support and sponsorship from Kerry Innovation Centre, Kerry County Council and EY.

KASI, the Killarney Immigrant Support Centre, was named the winner of the 'Community Resilience' category at an awards ceremony in the INEC, which was hosted by RTE’s Marty Whelan in front of the 400 community volunteers in attendance. Judges chose KASI because of the wide range of support it gives the community while Corca Dhuibhne 2030/Dingle Peninsula 2030 received the 'IPB Pride

of Place Climate Action Award'. The Reeks District were nominated in the ‘Islands and Coastal Communities’ category but missed out on an award. The competition was initiated 19-yearsago though a Co-operation Ireland programme to acknowledge the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers and those involved in local community development. Judges spoke of how impressed they were by KASI. “Relying heavily on volunteers from Killarney town, the centre has developed a strong working relationship with public and private sector agencies and has earned an outstanding reputation with the towns people.”

Ben secures silver at science olympiad A Fifth Year St Brendan’s College student is celebrating winning silver in a European-wide science competition in the Czech Republic. | By Sean Moriarty Benjamin Gaughran, was the physics specialist in a three-person Irish team that represented Ireland at the European Olympiad of Experimental Science (EOES) last week. His teammates were Cork’s Manahil Sabir (biology) and Dublin’s Dominika Ryzwanowicz (chemistry). The three were selected following an intense search to find Ireland’s brightest young scientists. Ben and his teammates competed individually against 260 other Irish Under 17

students and had to get through three rounds of the national competition before being chosen for the Irish team. “I enjoyed the experience, I was really happy to be doing it,” Ben told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was great to spend time with like-minded people that could become your work or university colleagues in the future.” Following his Leaving Certificate next year, Ben has ambitions to study either physics or engineering at Cambridge University.

Killarney Skatepark ready for tender process | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Skatepark took another step closer to reality this week as as contractors are being invited to submit tenders. Planning permission and funding are in place to build a skatepark on the grounds of Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on the Bypass Road. Kerry County Council will now prepare tender documents and contractors will be invited to submit construction plans to build the park. “This is the stage where the construction of the skatepark is opened up for

contractors to bid on the project for the agreed budget, offer design solutions for the skatepark and how best to construct it within the available space,” Seán Murphy, Chairperson, Killarney Skatepark Committee told the Killarney Advertiser. Tralee’s skatepark began construction last month. “This is a positive, there will be one skatepark in the county at least this year," he added. Once completed, Sean believes that the Killarney Skatepark will be of benefit to both locals and will add another element to Killarney’s tourism offering.

More to be done on traffic management – Cllr Grady | By Sean Moriarty Cllr Donal Grady has welcomed the addition of new traffic management measures - but has warned there is a lot more to be done to solve congestion in the town. A new box junction was recently painted on the Woodlawn and Muckross intersection. The Woodlawn junction is just one of many traffic congestion

blackspots in the town. Cllr Grady has been calling for such a measure for a long time and has had several motions before Killarney Municipal District meetings in the past. “We [the elected councillors] have been calling for a traffic management plan for years and we are just not getting one,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

Kickboxing superheroes are on top of the world | By Sean Moriarty Mountaineers who climbed Carrauntoohil last Sunday were in for the surprise of their lives at the summit. Members of the Killarney-based Kerry Kickboxing Club and the West Cork Kickboxing Club climbed Ireland’s highest mountain to raise funds for the Irish Red Cross effort in Ukraine. The clubs brought enough equipment to set up a temporary kickboxing ring at 1,038 metres and staged three separate bouts.

All six fighters were dressed as superheroes. “We are all a little bit mad and wanted to do something that would catch people’s attention,” Kerry Kickboxing Club’s founder and head coach, Tony Stephenson, told the Killarney Advertiser. Their efforts raised €2,000 for the Irish Red Cross. Kerry Kickboxing Club was founded last September and already has 40 members on its books. Three members of the club are taking part in Irish Elite Championships in County Monaghan this weekend.

NEST BOXES: Br Pat Lynch pictured with Kathleen Foley of Killarney Looking Good (Killarney Tidy Towns) installing the swift boxes at the Friary.

Friary project set up to save endangered birds

SUMMIT HEROES: Tony Stephenson (Spiderman), Alan O’Donovan (Robin), Greg Sheehan (The Flash), Ian Kingston (Batman), Lily De la Cour (Catwoman) and Deirdre Connolly (Wonder Woman).

A community project has been specifically created and installed at the Franciscan Friary to protect a species of endangered bird. | By Michelle Crean 16 nest boxes, produced locally by Stephan de Beer in his small factory, Genisis Nest Boxes in Currow, were put up on the church in readiness for the imminent return of swifts to town. Leane’s Tool Hire Killarney, provided the machine and operator to reach the height that was needed to secure the boxes while Yvonne Quill and Kathleen Foley of Killarney Looking Good (Killarney Tidy Towns) provided the funding for the whole of project. The idea for the project came about as the swifts (Apus apus) or Gabhlán gaoithe, a migratory species, have recently been declared “of conservation concern” and are now on “the red list” in Ireland and the UK. Swifts are about the same size as a swallow, but are a dark colour all over. They spend virtually all of their lives in the air and are never seen resting on wires, like swallows and house martins, who they might sometimes get confused with. They have tiny feet which do not allow them to move around easily on the ground, but do help them to cling to walls and cliffs. They are one of the fastest birds in flight in Ireland. "Swifts pair for life and they return to the same site each year to lay and incubate their eggs," Chris Barron, from

Killarney National Park Education Centre, said. "They like to nest in houses and churches, squeezing through tiny gaps to nest inside roofs. But as more old buildings are knocked down or are renovated and the gaps in soffits and elsewhere that the swifts used are closed up, their natural nesting sites are fast disappearing and the provision of artificial nest boxes as an alternative, becoming more and more important." Swifts eat only insects, which they catch and eat while they fly. The adult birds will catch insect prey and bring it back to the nest for the young. It is thought that with the numbers of insects declining so rapidly, that this is also contributing to the decline of the birds through less food being available to them and their chicks. "In 2019, 13 active nests had been counted on the eastern side of the church, but it was discovered last year that these had been blocked up when renovations took place in 2020. When swifts are blocked out of a building that they have previously nested in, they are known to return for at least six years, trying to gain access. So, every year that they return and cannot get in, is another year that they are not able to breed."

TEAMING UP: Donie Lucey (ICAA), John Joe Clifford, Conor O'Connor, Eamon Magnier, Ned Buckley, Leisha Geaney, Connie Looney, Denis Geaney, Tom Colbert and Keira Geaney are ready to team up and raise funds for the Irish Community Air Ambulance. Photo: John Colbert

Team Geaney to cycle Ring for air ambulance | By Michelle Crean With the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle back after a two year absence it is all systems go for a local group. Team Geaney has once again been activated for the July 2 event and will fundraise for the Irish Community Air Ambulance. This charity is committed to providing safe, effective and timely emergency medical care to those seriously ill or injured. The Geaney team and friends vis-

ited the Rathcoole Aerodrome recently, the base used for the air ambulance and were able to familiarise themselves with the service. The Irish Community Air Ambulance charity said that they are delighted to be one of the six chosen charities for this year's event and are grateful to Team Geaney for their support. "Team Geaney hope with the support of the public to help them fundraise for this deserving charity," Cathal Walshe said.

Better late than never Christmas present for St Francis Special School | By Sean Moriarty St Francis Special School received a very late Christmas present this week - a specially adapted bike for the pupils to use.

HOME EVENT: Killarney Cycling Club's Adam Murphy is one of many local cross country cyclists who get to compete at home this weekend.

Fossa to host national cycling championships

Killarney Cycling Club is preparing for its biggest mountain bike event of the year as it hosts a round of the Irish Cross Country National Championship on Sunday. | By Sean Moriarty It is three years since the club hosted a round of the national series when it held an event in Muckross. A new venue on the grounds of An Óige Youth Hostel in Fossa has since become available. The club has attracted an entry of over 150 riders across all age groups and categories for Sunday’s day-long event. Action gets underway at 10am and the event is free for spectators. “We are very grateful to An Óige for making their grounds available to us, it is not easy to get venues suitable for events this big,” club PRO, Keith Lyne, told the Killarney Advertiser. One innovation this year is a “just for fun” Under 6 race. “It is an introduction to off-road racing, all about the achievement of starting and finishing,” added Keith. Some of the top riders in the country

have entered the Fossa event. Local frontrunners include Billy McSweeney, John Crowley, Patrick Clifford and Mark McGlynn. Damien McCarthy, fresh from his Downhill Mountain Biking success in Texas earlier this month is also competing at the event. “Billy and Mark should be at the business end of the Senior 3 race,” Kevin Murphy of the club’s off-road committee said. “A lot of the top riders would have represented Ireland all over Europe at some stage in the past. We have a large contingent coming from Northern Ireland and they will all be staying local from Saturday night on.” Fans attending the event are asked to obey marshals on the approach to the event. Additional parking is available in Fossa village in the grounds of the old church. Refreshments will be served at the Golden Nugget throughout the weekend.

Husband and wife team Ciaran and Karen Dwyer, directors of Guerin Engineering and Pumps Ltd in Kilcummin, presented the special adapted bicycle to the staff and pupils at the Beaufort school on Tuesday. After seeing an online request last December that the school needed the bike, they decided to gift one. They contacted Glencar Medical, a Dublin-based firm that specialises in the supply of equipment to schools like St Francis, and ordered the bicycle. However, nothing is straightforward in

the current climate, Brexit, COVID and war all contributed to a delay in getting the bike to Ireland. Once it was in Dublin there were further delays in sourcing the special straps that St Francis’ children need to ride the bike safely. It all came to a happy ending this week when the Dwyers were finally able to present their Christmas present to the school. “We saw this request and we contacted the school and said we wanted to buy one, they told us where to get one, and we ordered it,” Karen told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had it paid for by the end of the year but then it took three months to get it into the country. It took more time to import the specialist parts. The costs were increasing but we did not mind at all.”

Conor, from Shronedraugh, Headford passed away unexpectedly at his home last Thursday. "He was an outstanding wing back for our Senior team in the club's golden era, playing alongside footballing legends Seamus Moynihan and John Crowley," Seamus Healy from Glenflesk GAA said. "Conor won five O'Donoghue Cup medals, a County Junior medal, an East Kerry Minor medal and the coveted Millenium Cup medal, and many more under age medals. Conor always gave one hundred percent when he donned the blue and gold and inspired everyone around him, definitely one of the most passionate players our club has ever seen. Outdoor music festival brings smiles and laughter On Sunday morning, a small van arrived at the Innisfallen car park and in it was very valuable cargo, which Ukrainians were looking forward to!

Any victory is important! On the eve of the final of the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, President Zelensky said "Ukrainians need victory - big and small". | By Natalya Krasnenkova That is why Ukrainians who gathered around the world on Saturday night were waiting for Ukraine's win in the song contest, just like the victory in the war. The Ukrainians from the Innisfallen Hotel were waiting for that too and the overall winner, Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra, caused a real emotional storm in the hall! "After my country's victory at Eurovision, I felt proud, cried, laughed and couldn't believe it. I am also grateful to everyone who voted for us, because this victory shows how much most European countries support us," Iryna Melnychuk said. "Voting around the world for Ukraine gives us hope for support from the world community not only in the Eurovision Song Contest," said Stepan Krasnenkov. The Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra received the highest number of points from the audience during the entire

existence of the competition: 439 points from the audience, 192 points from the professional jury. In the end - 631 points, which brought Ukraine victory. Also, thanks to the Kalush Orchestra, the whole world now knows about the humanitarian catastrophe in Mariupol and the Azovstal enterprises, where wounded Ukrainian soldiers and civilians are under blockade without food, water and medicine. After their performance, Kalush Orchestra addressed the audience from around the world with a request to save the defenders of Mariupol, who are at the Azovstal plant. "Please help Ukraine, Mariupol! Help Azovstal! Right now!" - the band called. After these words, search queries for Azovstal and Mariupol took off on the Internet as people were looking for what they meant. Irish Eurovision contestant Brooke also sang it and the whole world sings the song of the winners 'Stefania'.

After a few minutes the doors of the van opened, and we saw an absolutely fantastic picture - a stage for live music performances. The concert began and included Irish musicians James Moore on vocals and guitar, Deirdre Johnson on vocals and guitar, Damian Greer drums/percussion and Vairis Burcaks keyboard/synthesizer which gave the audience such positive emotions especially those who are still experiencing many fears and anxieties about the war. "Music unites, it carries history and emotions in different languages, and when there are types of Irish music sessions, worries are left behind for a while when music prevails," organiser, Gemma Tipton, said. Then Ukrainians took to the stage. The traditional 'One Viburnum Outside the Window' was performed by Olena Basko, guitar by Yevhenia Omelchenko and vocals by Tetiana Neliepova sup-

ported by Irish musicians. Singing together brings a lot of surprises and laughter but everyone was ready to improvise and support with one round of applause. Festival in a Van started in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Arts Officer with Kerry County Council, Kate Kennelly, found funding, and the festival was able to take place that day in Innisfallen. “Initially, I organised a Festival in a Van to help theatre masters and artists work during COVID. I want to find a safe way to continue live performances, as well as give hope and enjoyment to people who are isolated from the pandemic,” Gemma added. Since then, Festival in a Van has toured schools, nursing homes, town centres, city squares, remote places - where art does not always reach. "Like so many people all over the world, I’m shocked, saddened, upset and angry at the Russian attacks on Ukraine, and while I know there’s not much I can do to help at a political level, Festival in a Van is an obvious way of bringing the arts to where you are currently staying,” she added.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Relentless hours impact high performance Many of us are on the brink of burnout…. close to exhaustion daily, no longer able to enjoy life and constantly overwhelmed. We know that exercise, good sleep, good food, time for our hobbies, time with friends, meditation, laughter, proper time off to name a few, are essential for a good life, good health and preventing burnout. Since coming back out of lockdown I’ve noticed a trend. All those things we swore we’d never do again are back and worse than ever. We promised we’d make the time for each other. We swore that we’d take time out in nature and never ever take that stillness and calm for granted again. What I am seeing more and more of in the past few months is people cramming things into the day. Working longer hours, meeting up with people more often, going out more and essentially making up for lost time. This is all great and understandable, but what is obvious is that people are getting to a state of burnout, trying to do too much in shorter pieces of time. This is not sustainable. Working harder, constantly “on”, checking emails, answering calls, running from meeting to meeting - does this sound like you right now? The impact that this relentless style of living and working has on health, stress levels, energy, eating habits, relationships, in fact life in general, is enormous.

WORK LIFE BALANCE

Many of us are working like this and it seems that the new norm is to be working all through our waking hours. The concept of work/life/balance or the newer work life integration, was surely meant to reflect that we could do work anywhere thanks to technology, however for many of us, it has meant that we do our work everywhere for much of our waking hours, far longer than is healthy. Many of us are on the brink of burnout, skating a thin line between being always on and absolute body and mind exhaustion.

I hold to account organisations which think that this is how ‘high performance’ translates itself, they have a huge gap of understanding to close, starting with how to reflect a more modern progressive true high performance culture which places people’s well-being as the most important strategic priority. Relentless hours are not conducive to high performance, good leadership skills, being able to think clearly, being empathic or having good decision-making skills - working like this blunts all of our leadership characteristics and will eventually lead down the road to ill health and burnout. Burnout is very hard to come back from and that’s no way to live.

BREATH WORK

My good friends at Nave Yoga often practice two-minute breath work. Perhaps you could take some classes to learn how to connect with your breath?

OUTDOORS

Take 10 minutes outdoors, away from the desk, will help to rejuvenate the mind.

LUNCH

Reclaim lunch and have a screen free eating break. Constantly working through lunch is a recipe for lacklustre job performance, low energy for life and work, plus is pretty damn depressing.

EXERCISE

Daily exercise is essential for our overall health and well-being. When it’s mad at work, try not to dump the exercise, perhaps get up 15 minutes earlier and do a short workout at home. Can you get out to exercise a few evenings a week?

GOOD SLEEP HABITS

Close your devices an hour before sleep and set them aside. These are just short term strategies – in the end you need to have proper rest and down time, there is just no other way to be happy and healthy and ensure you can buffer the effects of stress in the body.

GARDENMAGIC €50,000 upgrade for

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Wildflowers are not always simple to grow There is nothing quite like the low, humming sound of insects in the garden. I always find the different pitches of the buzzing fascinating, from the drone of a big furry bumble bee to the high pitched whirring of hoverflies. And wasps always seem to have a dangerous sound – it is unique to them, in any case. It is possible to help pollinators into your garden at almost any time of the year, solitary bees such as bumbles and leafcutter bees, will come out of hibernation on a sunny December day if there are some heather flowers nearby. tulips, hyacinths, crocus and snowdrops provide sustenance in early spring, along with shrubs such as hamamelis, daphne, viburnum and willow. In April, the small flowers of the field maple attract many insects, as do the large trumpet shaped flowers of rhododendrons and azaleas. Wildflowers are now beginning to bloom, and they are the subject of today’s column! While it seems counterintuitive, wildflowers are not always simple to grow, especially as we mean ‘pretty meadow blooms’ as opposed to ‘weeds’! Creating an area for wildflowers takes some preparation. Most important is that it is a weed free area. Kill off any grass or weeds before sowing, either by using conventional weedkillers, or by laying down a sheet of black polythene or weed suppressant. Make sure any seeds which germinate are removed also, and that problematic plants such as rushes, are dug out. Most importantly, ensure all grass is gone, as wildflowers do not compete well against its vigorous growth. Rake the top layer of the soil loose to a fine tilth, and do not add

fertiliser! Wildflowers will generally not do well in a rich soil. When your area is ready, decide which seeds are best for your spot. There is much to choose from, for example, single varieties such as ragged Robin, teasels and poppies, or mixtures. There are seed mixes for perennial meadows, ones which attract birds - these usually have a high volume of seed bearing flowers, mixes for bees, ladybirds or certain colour mixes. There are also soil specific mixes.

Killorglin Playground

A significant enhancement of facilities to the tune of €50,000 at a playground in Killorglin will commence on Monday. The upgrade, which includes the installation of a new level access roundabout, trampoline, basket swing and other additions, will make the amenity more accessible and enjoyable for all users. However, because of the upgrading works the Kerry County Council playground will close for a period of five weeks. Kerry County Council received €31,000 in funding through the CLÁR Programme funded by the Department of Rural and

Community Development towards the works and the remainder of the cost is being met by the Council itself. Cathaoirleach of the Kenmare Municipal District, Cllr Michael Cahill welcomed the investment. "Killorglin Playground is a hugely popular amenity for the town and its hinterland. I am really pleased that the work can now commence on this project and look forward to the greatly enhanced facilities for all users," he said. "The closure for a period of five weeks is unavoidable but I would ask everyone to bear with it and we look forward to the re-opening of this important community amenity as soon as possible."

SOWING SEEDS

Sow your seeds thinly and evenly onto the prepared ground. I tend to cover with netting at this time of year, because, although it is the best time of year to sow, and there is a very high germination rate, birds are also a problem! The only maintenance really is to keep an eye on slug damage - I scatter in a few pellets when I sow anything - and if there are very dense clumps of seedlings forming, thin them out. When the flowers have gone to seed in the autumn, just cut them to ground level, leave the cuttings a few days for the seeds to drop out, and rake the foliage up. If left to rot in situ, it will make the soil too fertile for a good display the following year. I mention the use of slug pellets. To the best of my knowledge, the use of metaldehyde poison in slug pellets has been banned for a few years now, and pellets are made of ferric phosphate which is not harmful to pets or birds unless ingested in very large amounts. However, there are some ingredients used in slug pellets which may potentially cause damage to earthworms and other soil dwellers, so please, always use sparingly and where possible, not at all!

CLOSED: Killorglin Playground will close for five weeks from next Monday to allow for upgrading works.

New cocktail bar ready to open on Main Street A new cocktail bar in Killarney’s town centre is set to create several jobs. The Sheahan Group will hold an open recruitment day as it is seeking staff for a stylish new restaurant and cocktail bar project on Killarney’s Main Street that is very close to opening. To suit people’s schedules, the open day will be held on Tuesday next (May 24) from 11am to 1pm and again from 6pm to 8pm at JM Reidy’s on Main Street. “No appointment will be necessary and walk-in applicants, who should bring a copy of their CV, will be very welcome to pop in for a chat with members of the team,” said a group spokesperson.

“Students finishing college or secondary school for the summer months are more than welcome to apply for holiday work as, with full training given, experience is not essential.” The positions available include bar staff, floor staff, serving team members, kitchen staff and kitchen porters as well as other posts to suit people of all ages. “Competitive terms will be offered for all positions and as much flexibility as possible, in terms of hours and working days, will be facilitated. It is a great opportunity for would-be employees to be involved in the exciting opening period for the new bar and restaurant which is due to open in early June.”

Routine and balance are crucial in the run up to exams As you approach the countdown to the beginning of the Junior and Leaving Cert Exams on June 8, it is very important to maintain a healthy balance so that you can pace yourself properly. It can be tempting to try to pack in long hours of last minute study at this stage and become more focused on what you don’t know instead of what you do! Stress is a normal part of facing exams and in fact a certain amount of it is helpful to ensure that it mobilises you to perform well, but it is essential that you keep it, and the exams, in perspective. After many years of supporting students before, during and after exams, I know too well how overwhelming the experience can be so I urge you to do everything you can to look after your well-being at this stage.

BEFORE THE EXAMS

Stick to a good routine with a healthy balance in terms of revision, rest, fresh air, sleep and diet. Don’t be tempted to work late at night as it is usually unproductive and impacts on your concentration the following day. Approach your last minute revision in a targeted way with the guidance you have been given by your teachers. Have a schedule with your exam dates/times highlighted hanging up where it is obvious and visible at home and take a photo to save on your phone.

DURING THE EXAMS

Set two alarms for the mornings of exams and allow lots of extra time. You will need to be in your assigned seat in the exam centre at least 30 minutes before the start of the exam on day one and 15 minutes before all other exams. Hydration is really important during the exams to help with concentration so make sure you have plenty of water. The first thing to do when you look at the paper is to read the instructions carefully, your teacher will have gone through these many times with you. Mark all the questions you are going to do and write out a quick time plan for yourself. Focus on exactly what you are being asked; the most common feedback from examiners

is that students give a lot of irrelevant information so keep glancing back at the question to keep yourself on task to target the marks.

BREATHING

If you feel you are becoming really anxious in the exam hall, focus on controlling your breath to bring a sense of calm. Breathe in through your nose for two seconds, hold your breath for one second, and breathe out through your mouth for four seconds. Repeat for one minute.

AFTER THE EXAM

Try to avoid too much discussion after each paper, ‘post-mortems’ of the exams are rarely helpful and can add to stress levels so once each exam is done, take a break and then move on to preparing for the next one. I can tell you that regardless of what happens in each exam, you will have lots of options available to you and an interesting journey ahead. Keep in mind that while the Leaving Cert is an important exam and big milestone, it will not define you for the rest of your life. Best of luck to the class of 2022!

Major milestone for Listowel as sod is turned on €61m project The sod has been turned on the €61m Listowel Bypass project which will provide a new 6km carriageway and significantly improve road access and connectivity in north Kerry. Minister Hildegarde Naughton TD was in the county for a number of engagements which included the official reopening of the R556 Rathscannell (Dale) Road between Abbeydorney and Ballyduff which has undergone a €7.8m reconstruction and resurfacing upgrade. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, hailed the turning of the sod on the Listowel Bypass as hugely important and beneficial. "The turning of the sod by Minister Naughton represents a major milestone in delivering this project and we look forward to its completion within the next two years." Minister Naughton said she was "delighted to celebrate an important day for

Kerry’s road network with Kerry County Council". "The new N69 Listowel Bypass will provide much needed relief of congestion and improvements in road safety and journey times for the town. It will reduce journey times by up to six minutes and reduce traffic volumes by up to 40%. As well as this the inclusion of additional cycle facilities will provide residents with safer Active Travel facilities and form part of the 100+km cycling and walking route which will eventually link Limerick to Fenit via Listowel and Tralee. I wish TII, Kerry CoCo, and Will Brothers Ltd., all the very best in completing the project. I look forward to returning to the beautiful county of Kerry for the project’s official opening once completed." Earlier, the Minister and Cllr Moloney officially opened the Rathscannell Road which was reconstructed and resurfaced by the direct labour of Council crews over the past year and a half. The project,

which commenced in September 2020, consists of a newly constructed 2.2km length of carriageway and adjacent local roads on the strategic route to and from north Kerry which will improve road safety and be of significant benefit to the locality and the region. "I am delighted to see the delivery of the Dale Road scheme which will improve the safety and the quality of this strategic regional road which is the main access route to Tralee and a popular tourist route accessing Ballybunion, the Wild Atlantic Way and Blue Flag Beaches in North Kerry," Minister Naughton said. "Given the accident history of this section of road it was obvious that funding was required to upgrade it to an acceptable standard. I also want to congratulate my colleague and former Minister in the Department of Transport, Brendan Griffin, who ensured this critical project received essential funding for delivery during his tenure, amounting to €7.8m since 2019."

Hike for Hope to support young people’s mental health People are being asked to come together and hike to bring hope to young people facing challenges with their mental health. 'Hike for Hope', organised in collaboration with Scout volunteers from across

Ireland, is a virtual fundraising challenge to raise funds for youth mental health charity Jigsaw that will take place from Friday May 27 to Sunday May 29. “Young people need hope, and our help, now more than ever," Michelle Comer of the 'Hike for Hope' organising team, said.

It was created by British woman Debbie Wingham, who makes the most expensive versions of everything from cakes to handbags including an advent calendar last year which sold for £7.8m. The artwork features the Puerto Banús landscape, the Beatles John Lennon, Cartier jewellery, designer handbags, Rolex watches, perfume, and supercars and is now on display where mega-yachts on the Costa Del Sol park up at Muelle de Levante Stree where it will remain until mid-August. It's expected that over 2m people will come to see Debbie's latest work - but it isn't the original with the expensive diamonds. "I wanted to create something that people of all ages would enjoy, including children," Debbie said during the launch. "It is not just a flat mural; I have made a space where people can take photos and get close up. It is a complete experience." Inspired by work from street artists including that by Banksy and Richard Hambelton, this is currently thought to be one of the most expensive contemporary murals in the world. The original will be sold off later this year to benefit a number of charities from human trafficking to families suffering from malnutrition, and the Ukraine Crisis.

"We need to spread hope in our communities and show young people that their communities value and support their mental health. We’re asking the whole of Ireland to get out and about and show our young people hope by 'Hiking for Hope' and supporting Jigsaw!” All ages and all abilities can take part. Join in as an individual, with family, friends, your Scout group, school mates, colleagues, anyone! Sign up to 'Hike for Hope' for free at jigsaw.ie/hikeforhope.

Strong cross-party support for Irish language in the north TDs and Seanadóirí expressed strong cross-party support for Irish language legislation to be enacted in the north.

LIFE-SAVERS: Paramedics Fred Fox and Matt Bone were invited to the wedding of 69-year-old Mick Culley who is pictured with his new wife.

Paramedics invited to man's wedding after saving his life There were very special guests of honour at a UK wedding celebration last weekend - the people who saved the groom's life! A paramedic and emergency care assistant were delighted to attended the ceremony in Lincolnshire after previously saving the life of 69-year-old Mick Culley. Mick, who was on holiday in Wiltshire last May with his fiancee Kerry, had suffered a brain haemorrhage on Salisbury Plain. It was Fred Fox and Matt Bone, from the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT), who saved his life. “[Mick] was staggering across the car park and I knew something was very wrong, so I dialled 999 for an ambulance," Kerry, describing the moment Mick took ill, said. “They kept the whole situation calm, got him on a stretcher and into the ambu-

lance. The next thing I knew I was driving to the hospital, not knowing whether he was alive or dead.” Fred explained that they "had to act fast”. “Mick could still talk when we arrived on scene, but he was displaying all the red flags for a bleed on the brain," he said. Mick, after undergoing further tests, needed a specialist operation at Southampton General Hospital. Fred and Matt continued to care for Mick by transferring him there. Mick was eventually transferred after the successful operation, this time closer to his home near Skegness to recover. “I can’t thank everybody enough – we don’t have enough praise for what Fred and Matt did. Their quick actions saved my life," Mick said. “We wanted to take the opportunity to thank Fred and Matt by inviting them to the blessing.”

Annual celebration of drawing People from across the country are invited to grab a pencil and paper tomorrow (Saturday) and join National Drawing Day. Now in its 18th year, the annual event will see the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI) joined by arts centres, galleries, museums and libraries across the country to celebrate drawing. The NGI is collaborating with 77 venues and arts groups in 23 counties, including Kerry County Museum in Tralee which is running a course on ‘How to Draw a Fos-

sil’ with artist Hazel Ramsey. “National Drawing Day is a highlight of our year here at the National Gallery of Ireland, and we’re thrilled to be celebrating for the 18th time in 2022. With partners across the length and breadth of Ireland, wherever you are, you’ll find something near you. National Drawing Day is for everyone – not just artists! – so we hope that members of the public of all abilities will find inspiration in drawing with us,” Sinéad Rice, Head of Education at the National Gallery of Ireland, said.

Conradh na Gaeilge coordinated the event on Wednesday with representatives of political parties and independent politicians outside Leinster House to highlight their cross-party support for #AchtAnois, as part of the Dream Dearg language rights campaign, for Irish language legislation in the north to be enacted without further delay. Representatives from Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Green Party, Labour, People Be-

fore Profit, Sinn Féin, Social Democrats and the independents were in attendance. Support was also expressed for the Lá Dearg which is to be held tomorrow (Saturday), in Belfast. Thousands of people are expected to walk to City Hall to call for the Irish language legislation promised in the 2006 St Andrews Agreement, the 2020 New Decade New Approach agreement, by the British Government Secretary of State Brandon Lewis, in 2021 and by the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson this week during a visit to Belfast.

ACT: On Wednesday politicians expressed strong cross-party support for Irish language legislation to be enacted in the north.

New multi-million Euro school for Tralee A brand new state-of-the-art school is to be built in Tralee. Education Minister Norma Foley announced progression of a multi-million Euro building project for Educate Together National School (ETNS). It means the current school located in Killeen will move to the new two acre greenfield site at Lohercannon once built. The design and build for the new project has been devolved to Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB) for delivery, and a design team will be appointed to progress this project into the architectural planning process. The building plan will deliver eight modern classrooms as well as two bespoke classrooms to cater for the provision of special education. “I am delighted to announce this sig-

nificant building project for Educate Together National School Tralee which will create a state-of-the-art new school building at Lohercannon, Tralee," Minister Foley said. “This ambitious multi-million Euro building project is an endorsement of the school community at ETNS and recognises their tireless commitment and endeavour to educating the young people of Tralee and surrounding areas. This significant building project will provide state-of-the-art facilities, special education provision and a new school building and I look forward to this project progressing at pace. I would like to thank Kerry County Council for assisting the Department of Education in securing the two-acre site and Kerry ETB for progressing the building project which will deliver this eagerly-awaited new school.”

Car dealers are now hubs for Ukrainian donations Two Kerry-based car dealers are part of a national campaign to provide essential aid for Ukraine. Donagh Hickey Motors in Rathmore and Adam’s of Tralee are the two local garages that have signed up for the project. Under the scheme, the garages will be used as collection hubs for essential equipment that will be transported to the war torn country. “We have a very large and loyal customer base and we are appealing through them to make donations,” Adam’s of Tralee General Manager, Marcus O’Shea, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Any dealer could have signed up for this

but we are one of only two in Kerry to do so.” The garages, following advice from humanitarian agencies in Ukraine, have created a very specific list of what is urgently needed out there. These include generators, solar battery chargers, batteries, power banks, flashlights, drones and tablets. Medical equipment like First Aid kits (NATO standard) and other medical items are also sought. People can assist by either dropping goods to the two garages or by making a donation via www.safeharbourforukraine.org.

DONATIONS: Staff from Adam's of Tralee, Noel O'Connor, Liam Shannon and Marcus O'Shea with some of the essential goods donated to a nationwide Ukrainian appeal.

ON THE ROAD: Yvonne McMahon (Kelliher's Garage), Gillian Fitzgerald (Colaiste na Sceilge), Jordan Lee and Maurice Fitzgerald (Colaiste na Sceilge) with some of the students from the Cahersiveen school enjoying the first 'Jordan's Drive' talk.

Jordan Lee to tell his story to the county’s schools

Paralympian Jordan Lee will share his experiences with schools all over Kerry. The Killarney man has embarked on a countywide tour 'Jordan's Drive' in association with Kelliher's Garage, a series of informal talks on his achievements and how he overcame his disability to reach the top of his chosen sport. The 21-year-old was born with a foreshortened left arm known as amniotic band syndrome but has enjoyed a successful sports career which included rep-

resenting Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics last summer. Now he wants to share his story and inspire other students to follow their dreams. His tour started last week at Colaiste na Sceilge in Cahersiveen and over the next few weeks, depending on his training schedule, will visit schools in Firies, Milltown, and Killarney. “Don’t be afraid of people with disabilities or different backgrounds,” he said. “A few years ago there was only typical people in classrooms – you never came across peo-

ple with disabilities or from various different countries. It is a lot more mixed now. I want to inspire people to treat everyone on the same level.” 'Jordan's Drive' is made possible thanks to his role as a brand ambassador for Kelliher’s Garage, dealer principal, Tim Kelliher explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “Having got to know Jordan so well over the last couple of years we have come to realise how much of an inspiration he is so we decided to ask him to hop into his Toyota CHR Hybrid and bring his story out into the highways and byways of the

Kingdom,” he said. “Headlined ‘Jordans Drive’ and organised by my marketing team headed by Yvonne McMahon they have travelled to many of the schools around Kerry from Cahersiveen to Beaufort, Killorglin and with other dates planned for Firies and Milltown to name but a few. He has spoken his many words of wisdom to the children who have been in awe of the journey and his achievements, and we at Kelliher’s Garage are delighted and proud to have him as our brand ambassador.”

Rebuilding costs continue to accelerate The cost of construction has accelerated to record levels in recent months. As the country emerged from COVID restrictions the construction industry faced supply chain issues and delayed projects. Since then, the sector has battled shortages of materials, labour shortages and overall inflation in the wider economy. The end result of this turmoil is a huge increase in the cost of building. From an insurance perspective this is going to have far reaching consequences. Your property should be insured for the reinstatement cost and not the market value, in order words the cost of rebuild-

UNDER INSURANCE

It is very important to note that “under insurance” can have a serious effect on any future claims settlements. All policies include an “Average Clause” which means in the event of “under insurance” any claims settlement can be reduced in value in proportion to the degree of un-

der insurance. Where the Sum Insured is only 75% of the total reinstatement cost, you will receive 75% of the agreed cost of reinstatement, whether the claim is made for partial reinstatement or total loss. I would recommend that you review your reinstatement sum insured sooner rather than later and review again in six month’s time. Inflation, supply chain shortages and the war in Ukraine are all affecting construction costs. In order to get a definitive individual reinstatement value on your house you should contact an independent qualified surveyor. The Institute of Chartered Surveyors review rebuilding costs nationally and issue an annual report along with a handy calculator, this can be found at www. scsi.ie.

The kitchen is the heart of the home Continuing the spring clean theme in preparing your home for sale, one of the most important rooms in the house is the kitchen. If there is a showroom within your home, the kitchen is it! It's the heart of any home and can often be the most important room to would-be buyers. When prepping your home for sale a well presented kitchen area should always look, feel and smell clean and fresh, appear spacious, bright and welcoming. The starting point is a good deep clean. Consider a professional cleaning job if you feel it is warranted. It is money well spent as a sparkling clean kitchen will pay dividends. Make sure your oven and hob are clean and free from any grease/ grime; rub down the cabinets, and polish the handles. Make sure your kitchen floor tiles are

shining, there is no excuse for a dirty kitchen floor. Empty the bins prior to any viewings and remove all recycling and pet related items - don’t take any chances with lingering odours. Perhaps invest in a few cleverly placed air fresheners or scented candles. These will work wonders. Clear off the worktops; a toaster and a kettle/coffee machine are about the only items one should consider leaving on the worktop. Everything else should be out of sight. Polish any marble/quartz worktops so they are shining for viewings. Perhaps place a vase of freshly cut seasonal flowers on the counter top/kitchen table. Organise your cupboards as buyers will look inside. Now is the time to declutter those presses – remove the out of date spices and jars from the back

of the cabinet! If your cabinets are overly stuffed it gives the impression there isn’t enough storage space in your kitchen. If you have open shelving your goal should be to showcase how it can be useful and look great. Leave some open space on each shelf and only display matching sets of dishes/glasses. Shine the kitchen tap which is a simple but effective measure, and fix any leak while you are at it. Remove any old sponges and soap containers and replace with nice looking hand soap and washing up liquid on a neat tray. Get rid of the tea towels – they look awful. Finally the lighting; check that each and every bulb is working and if not, replace them. Your kitchen area is now ready for viewing.

Handball stars shine brightly in London

Irish eyes were smiling in London at the weekend following phenomenal performances by Killarney’s handball stars at the prestigious United Kingdom Open One Wall Championship. The standout players of the championships were Eoin O’Donoghue (Killarney) and John Joe Quirke (Glenbeigh) who were the pride of the Irish on Saturday and Sunday. They put in a devastating display of skill and passion to win the extremely competitive Men’s Doubles B Championship. After prevailing in a number of their opening games, they progressed to the semi-finals where they defeated the French duo of Tom Dutheil and Florina Vaujany 21-11. In a hard-fought final, the Kerry players beat Naoise Green and Fionn Ó Súillea-

bháin (Ireland) 25-20 thanks in part to some great play from O’Donoghue. “I was delighted with the win – it’s a great boost for handball in Kerry,” Eoin said. “We had to use all our experience and skill to edge past the Irish duo and win the title. It’s a great honour for my club, Spa Killarney. Many Kerry people living in London and our own families supported us on both days and this made winning the title very special. “My doubles partner, John Joe, had a great weekend, winning the singles final

and a silver medal in the over 40s doubles event.” Teams from Ireland, England, France, Italy, USA, UK and Israel competed in the championships with four players from Killarney taking part. In the Men’s C Singles competition, O’Donoghue finished mid-table in Group B following victories over Irish players Ger Scahill and Ray Carthy and defeat at the hands of James Toop (England) and Declan Keenan. There was more success for Killarney in the over 40s competition as Brendan O’Donoghue and John Joe Quirke finish runners up in this hotly contested category. They were narrowly defeated by the American team of Carlos Torres and Jay Sanchez. Elsewhere, Aoife Walsh and Sinéad Mo-

riarty from Spa Killarney Handball Club both reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Singles competition. Walsh defeated Isabel Power (England) 21-4 but lost to Catherine Vos (England) and fellow Irish players Aoife McCarthy and Sinéad Hanley. She lost to Siobhan Prentice 21-16 in the semi-final. Moriarty was defeated by Anastasya Spiridonov (Israel) and Irish players Sabrina Hughes and Siobhan Prentice while in the semi-final she was defeated by Catherine Vos (England) in a very exciting contest. There was some consolation for the Killarney pair in the doubles competition where they finished a very credible third overall and just out of the medals after a classic encounter with the English duo of India Blaksley and Becky Connell.

Pres girls are in seventh heaven The St Brigid’s Presentation Second Year footballers were crowned County Junior B champions on Friday last following a superb seven-goal victory over Mercy Mounthawk Tralee in the Ballymac sunshine.

LGFA: Molly Cahill (on behalf of her mother, Mary, of Happy Hearts Childcare) presenting a new set of jerseys to Niamh Faulds (Glenflesk U12s) and Derek Fleming (Glenflesk LGFA chairperson). Also pictured are Glenflesk U12 mentors Paud O'Donoghue and Aileen O'Sullivan.

The girls hit the ground running, bagging two quick goals from the boots of Lily O'Shaughnessy and Niamh Cantillon. The Pres defence was solid and dogged throughout and managed to keep Mounthawk from breaching their goal for the duration. Abby Cronin scored three goals and a point to torment the oppostion and

Niamh Cantillon scored a second goal plus a point to keep the Killarney school well in front. Further scores from Muireann Healy and a final goal from Lara O'Neill produced a final score of 7-4 to 0-11. It was an excellent performance from the entire team, including the substitutes who all played their part. Captain Eve Culhane proudly accepted the cup on behalf of the team, and St Brigid's, at the end of the game and joyous celebrations followed. Congratulations to all the players and to their trainers: Mr Counihan, Ms Healy and Ms Brosnan.

New gear leaves Glenflesk girls with happy hearts The Glenflesk U12 girls football team were delighted to receive a new set of jerseys recently, kindly sponsored by Mary Cahill of Happy Hearts Childcare, Barraduff. There was huge excitement when the girls donned the stylish new shirts for the first time last Wednesday, and the O’Neills jerseys proved to be a lucky charm as they defeated Beaufort at home. One of the most striking elements of the new gear is the smiling red heart which is part of the Happy Hearts Childcare logo. “We would like to sincerely thank Mary

for her generous sponsorship and we look forward to many more years of success in our Happy Heart jerseys,” Glenflesk LGFA chairperson Derek Fleming said. Happy Hearts Childcare was established as a preschool in Knockanes in 2009 and opened with just three children on their books. Numbers have increased steadily over the years and in October 2021 Happy Hearts Childcare moved to a state-ofthe-art, purpose-built facility in Barraduff village, which now caters for 68 children. There are 10 staff employed in Happy Hearts and there are plans to expand even further in 2023 when a new extension is planned.

Local cycling success in the provinces Killarney Cycling Club members had a busy and successful weekend in Cork, Galway and Wexford. Sam Bolger continued his great form bagging second overall in the Sliabh Luachra Classic in Knocknagree. He was narrowly beaten by Irish International Liam O’Brien of Fermoy. Conor Kissane and Mark McGlynn both finished strongly in the bunch. In the ladies race Niamh Sheahan took a fine third place. In Galway, last year’s junior A3 class winner Lorcan Daly, who has since been promoted to A2, relished the opportunity to race against an international field. However, the five-minute class handicap

and fast racing meant he could not close the gap to the race leaders. Ewan Buckley had a mechanical problem and had to bow out early. In the A4 race Jimmy Carton and Luke Costelloe rode strongly with Luke making a bid for a lone break with a lap to go but his 30-second advantage was eventually hauled in and he finished inside the top 10. Shane Spellman won the bunch sprint to take fourth overall in the A3 Junior class. In off-road news Jason Murphy won the Master 30’s category in round two of the Grassroots Enduro Series at Bree, County Wexford.

CHAMPIONS: The St Brigid's Second Year footballers who were crowned county champions following victory over Mercy Mounthawk Tralee.

Nagle competing in Rally Portugal this weekend Paul Nagle and Craig Breen are in Portugal this weekend for the fourth round of the World Rally Championship. It is five years since they last contested Rally Portugal but this is their first time competing together in the event. Back in 2018 they were both working for Citroen Racing, Nagle was alongside Kris Meeke and Breen was working with British co-driver Scott Martin. However, the all-Irish crew arrived in Portugal in third place in the championship standings. The four-day event got underway yesterday evening (Thursday) with ceremonial start in Coimbra which was immediately followed by a 2.82km super special stage on the edge of the city. Today’s action (Friday) on famous roads around Arganil includes the legendary and crowd friendly Super Special at the Lousada rallycross circuit. Tomorrow (Saturday) journeys to the Cabreira Mountains include two runs over the 38km Amarante stage, the longest test of the weekend.

The final day (Sunday) features five stages in the Fafe area. Felguieras and Montim are first up, but the spotlight is on the famous Fafe test and its enormous crowds. The highly anticipated event marks the 50th anniversary celebrations of the FIA World Rally Championship; Rally de Portugal featured in the championship’s inaugural season and this year’s event will celebrate half a century of history, with historic cars and figures making appearances over the course of the weekend. “After the first three rallies, they were all a bit unique in their own way, so looking forward to seeing what the pace of the Ford Puma will be in Portugal,” Breen said. “There are a lot of new stages and some changes since the last time I was here, so it will be interesting. I’d like to have a bit more speed than what we showed in Croatia, so we’ll be working as hard as we can to make that possible.” Several members of Killarney and District Motor Club have travelled to Portugal to support club mate Nagle and Breen.

Eamonn Fitzgerald charts the history of the once popular “English” game that is now experiencing a revival in The Spa What a change for lovers of live sport. After two years of very restricted action on the playing fields and in the indoor sports arenas, 2022 has got off to a flying start with a plethora of games in all codes. The Killarney sports scene, which is of great interest to this writer, is no different. GAA and soccer are at full throttle for both genders, as a very popular indoor game, basketball, comes to an end. For now, let’s switch to a very different sport. How about cricket? Well, what about it, and what relevance does that game have for Killarney and for Kerry? Some weeks ago I was on our long, weekly group walk, which brought us to a splendid cricket club in The Spa, Tralee - as distinct from Spa, Killarney. This is no ordinary club venue, but the headquarters of Kerry Cricket. And that set me thinking about the sport and of course the Cricket Field in Killarney. Many people believe that the GAA sports are the oldest games in Killarney. Not so. Rowing and cricket are much older. The GAA wasn’t founded until 1884, but cricket has been played in Ireland since 1792, when the Military of Ireland and the Gentlemen of Ireland took each other on in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. The game still thrives in one of the world’s oldest established

cricket clubs. I have seen those cricket games there on numerous occasions and, of course, the games go on all day. By the mid-1850s, the game had expanded to the point where it was the largest and most popular sport in the country for certain social strata. In fact, its success was such that the first team to represent Ireland beat their English counterparts in 1855, handing them a 107-run thrashing. However, the game went into decline towards the end of the century, largely a victim of politics and class. The founding of the GAA in 1884 and the

subsequent growth of Gaelic games became a rallying point for the disaffected and disenfranchised working class tenants of Ireland against their upper-class, cricket-playing landlords, and ascendency class. Although the game of cricket itself was not anathema to the downtrodden, its affiliation to England was.

THE BAN

The game continued in the north of the country and in the heartlands of central and northern Dublin, but the GAA introduced the infamous Ban (Rule 27) in 1902. In effect, GAA players were

x

banned from either participating or even watching the so-called English sports of soccer, rugby and cricket. The ban lasted for more than 70 years, ensuring that cricket became unknown in much of the country. How many readers can remember spending Sunday afternoons watching the Killarney rugby team playing in the Cricket Field from the vantage point of the Flesk Bridge? It was a win-win situation for the GAA brethren. They did not have to pay to see the game and technically they did not contravene the Ban. The local GAA had people appointed to spy on members who defied Rule 27. Although housing has taken over much of the old field, part of it is still there. Head out to the Flesk Bridge and look down to your left and there it is.

I DON'T LIKE CRICKET... I LOVE IT: Members of the County Kerry Cricket Club at their home grounds at The Spa, Tralee.

The original Cricket Field was owned by Lord Kenmare and as they were of the ascendancy class there was a great demand for cricket among the social class. None of the ordinary people of Killarney played cricket, but times changed and, when the Dr Crokes club was founded in 1886, the Browne family was very accommodating. They provided a sports field for the fledgling club. Tom Crosstown Looney, a prominent player with Crokes and with Kerry,

struck a great deal, securing a splendid field for games and all for the nominal sum of a shilling a year for as long as they wanted it. The same man erected sleepers on the Woodlawn side of the Cricket Field while the Flesk was the boundary on the Gleneagle side. Crokes played there and so did Kerry, who met their great rivals, Cork. In one photograph of the 1913 All-Ireland winning team taken in the Cricket Field, the sleepers are very

visible. Dr Crokes played there until Dick Fitzgerald died and the club built the Fitzgerald Stadium. The Kenmares were well respected by the local Killarney people as they provided great employment and were termed ‘good landlords’.

MODERN DAY

The 2022 cricket season got underway over the Easter weekend. County Kerry CC currently competes in all four leagues in Munster and also plays a number of tournaments. In 2018 they won the Senior Munster Cup for the first time in the club’s history. They also won the Munster Junior Cup and the Munster Junior T20s and were awarded Munster Club of the Year Kerry are the first club in Munster to boast a ladies cricket team and would be delighted to welcome new members, girls and boys, adults and juniors

57 to training every Wednesday (6-8pm) at the beautiful Oyster Oval in The Spa. The contact at the Tralee location is Richard Rutland 086 8891533. And there is a Killarney connection to top-level cricket. Ray Walsh, the well known Killarney garda (now retired), has a brother Eddie who is married to Laura, a sister of Eoin Morgan. Morgan is a Dub, born there in 1986, who holds the record for the fastest century in the Cricket World Cup. He played for Ireland but really made his name with England. Under his captaincy, England won the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, the first time they won the tournament. Morgan, the ciotóg batter, plays county cricket for Middlesex. “From the age of 13, I wanted to play cricket for England,” Morgan told the Sunday Times in 2010. “I’ve never felt any shame in saying this is what I wanted to do. And the people at home involved in cricket, they were like, 'Fair play, it's going to be unbelievable if you make it'. So I’ve never had any shame about this and my father has never had any shame about it.” Shades of Jack Grealish in modern soccer parlance. Grealish has relations in Sneem and played underage soccer for Ireland alongside another man with strong Sneem connections, John Egan. He of course is the son of the great John Egan from Kerry’s Golden Years. Thankfully, John Egan Junior didn’t 'take the soup' and is a key man on the present Irish international team. In modern times with so many people from foreign countries deciding to live and work in Ireland, they have brought with them their love of cricket. While there isn’t a Killarney cricket team – yet - one does see a few of the new arrivals playing casual cricket. Many of these people come countries like India and Pakistan, and isn’t it wonderful to see them playing the game that is so strong in countries that were once under British rule. I saw another wonderful cricket ground recently in Valentia, where the sport thrived when so many English workers came to the island when the Transatlantic cable station linking Ireland with the USA was being set up. Of course, rounders has many of the elements of cricket and it is an official game of the GAA, just like hurling, football, and handball. Sadly, the GAA has not promoted it properly and it is in danger of extinction. Maybe Larry McCarthy, the new president, may take up the challenge and be forever known as the president who revived rounders.

Despite all the attention, David Clifford remains totally at ease It's not something that most of us - the mere mortals of this world - have ever had to worry about, but being double-marked looks like a complete pain in the backside. It's annoying enough having one sticky back breathing on your neck without having another spoilsport blocking your supply lines from the front.

HQ: David Clifford was at Croke Park for the launch of SuperValu’s #CommunityIncludesEveryone campaign. Photo: INPHO/Dan Sheridan.

Kerry superstar David Clifford isn't one of us, though, so naturally enough he's enjoying it. Speaking via Zoom from Croke Park (the Fossa native was there to launch SuperValu's #CommunityIncludesEveryone campaign), Clifford was typically breezy when it came to the topic of rivals doing anything and everything in their power to stop him. "That’s something we’ve started to come across and will continue to come across," the 23-year-old said when asked about Cork playing two defenders on him in the recent Munster semi-final. "It’s [about] trying to find solutions, trying to have as many scoring threats as we can. They can’t double-mark everyone, d’you know what I mean? "It’s obviously tricky and that brings its challenges but trying to find ways around it is enjoyable too." Clifford is arguably the standout Gaelic football talent of the modern era and witnessing him in full flow must be one of the most joyous experiences in sport. It therefore stands to reason that seeing him getting corralled and penned in by two opponents is one of the most horrid. Watching him the last day was like watching a lion in a zoo. It’s always cool to see the king of the jungle but keeping him in a cage just doesn’t sit right. Of course, Cork are perfectly entitled to set up however they want. And for much of the match - the first half in particular - their gameplan worked. Clifford was on the periphery, limited to a single point from play. As the soon-to-be-qualified PE teacher alluded to today, the onus is on Kerry to find other ways to score when they simply cannot get the ball into his hands. The fact that Kerry’s other forwards scored 0-18 against Cork shows that they are capable of doing it. The fact that Kerry failed to get over the line when Clifford was sidelined for extra time against Tyrone last September shows that they still have a point to prove against the bigger teams. Clifford was at ease during his 22-minute chat with myself and other print journalists, deftly sidestepping potentially loaded questions like they were hapless defenders clutching at the air around him. A dummy solo past the championship structure debate. A pirouette around the Kerry captaincy issue. A quick turn of pace left my query about the significance of potentially winning this year’s All-Ireland for dead.

He is certainly a lot more comfortable in front of the media now than the David Clifford who burst onto the senior intercounty scene in 2018. Back then, he was wide-eyed and slightly nonplussed by it all. Now, he pretty much has it (us?) all figured out. But there was still plenty to feed on from the briefing. He spoke of his infant son, Óigí, and how becoming a father has put life into perspective for him. “It’s a change but it’s massively enjoyable. There’s great fun attached to it. It feels like sport is everything and we put everything into it but health and family take a priority." When asked if seeing his child after a disappointing performance helps, the former MTU Kerry student said that it does. “Óigí doesn’t tend to be too worried about whether we’ve won or not!” He also spoke about avoiding the hype. Many observers rate him as the best player in the country. Others (including this writer) have publicly stated that he could well be the best they’ve ever seen. “I haven’t paid too much attention to it, or haven’t seen a whole pile of it,” Clifford insisted. “I’m not on social media really and that’s probably a good thing.” Perhaps most interesting of all were his insights into his own thought processes. Where does his focus lie? Does he always have football on the brain, or can he switch off? “I’m just trying to focus on a game-togame basis. There’s still plenty of stuff to work on. “Throughout the league you’re just trying to get minutes into the legs, and things come so thick and fast that you don’t have much time to think. The time between the games [during championship] is good to reflect. “[But] it can be hard to put games to the back of your mind. I’m trying to work on that – to try and be focussed when you need to be focussed and to step away when you need to step away.” Is there room for improvement in his game? “Yeah, 100%. Trying to get that consistency of performance is a big focus for me.” Most would argue that he has been pretty consistent so far in his young career. If he can make improvements in that department, keeping him in his cage might become a three-man job.

Killarney Legion GAA LADIES UPDATE: In what is always a very worthwhile exercise the U10 girls stepped out of Saturday mornings in Direen and went on the road, albeit a short journey to Lewis Road, to play our neighbours Dr Crokes last Thursday. Their coaches were delighted with the workout where again the emphasis is on enjoyment and getting their skills into use in a fun environment. Our U14 ladies green team are celebrating this week after clinching the Division 3 shield defeating Churchill in John Mitchel’s GAA complex. Playing against a very stiff breeze in the first half but they were quick out of the traps to take a 2-5 to 1-0 lead. Churchill started the second half stronger, coming into the game more but our girls knuckled down again to kick on and finish the game out winners. Final Score Legion 2-10 Churchill 1-3. Team captain Eva Spellman, granddaughter of Weeshie Fogarty, accepted the shield from County Board Chairperson Selina Looney. A tight and cagey second half saw them lead 1-9 to 2-2 at half-time. halftime lead of 9 points to 1. Some excellent point scoring by Harry Kelly, Tadgh O’Shea, Eoin Talbot, and two excellent points by Darran Ryan making his senior county league debut put Fossa in control. A spirited fight back by Scartaglin led in part by Eddie Horan saw them close the lead to 4 points but a strong finish by Fossa saw Matt Rennie and Harry Buckley score late points to put the result beyond doubt. Paddy Sheehan was very strong in defence and it was great to see Bryan Myers return after his injury. DIVISION 6A: Division 6 Round 6 - Kerins O’Rahillys B 0-11 Fossa B 2-14.
