Clúid completes €18m housing project in Dirreen

Kidnap attempt "a misunderstanding" | By Michelle Crean

EXCLUSIVE

6

Local Gardai have this week moved to reassure the public after fears that two very young children were the subject of a kidnap attempt last Friday. Social media reports were shared widely online that a man tried to "take two little girls" in the Deer Park estate but was scared off and ran when a local man confronted him. However, Killarney Gardai this week confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that it was a misunderstanding, but that the man in question was arrested for public order offences. "We want to reassure the public that there was nothing sinister to this matter. A man was arrested for a Public Order Offence for being intoxicated," Superintendent Flor Murphy said.

HOMES: Clúid has completed its €18m housing project in Dirreen which will supply 83 homes to help alleviate pressure on Kerry County Council's housing list.

A new €18m housing project - which will provide homes for over 180 people - is ready to be handed over to Kerry County Council. Located in Sruthán na Sailí, Dirreen, the project will provide 83 houses to people on Kerry County Council’s housing list. It includes 22 two bedroom houses, 43 three-bedroom houses, six single-bed-

room apartments and 12 two-bedroom apartments. The new homes are within walking distance of a number of playing fields including Killarney Celtic Football Club

and Legion GAA grounds. Local amenities such as shops and services are easily accessible too. The project is a partnership between Clúid, Kerry County Council, the Department of Housing, the Housing Finance Agency (HFA) and Killarney-based company, Thermohouse. “This innovative social housing project

not only addresses the need for rapid-build homes but also creates greener, more energy efficient buildings, with lower fuel bills for our residents," James O’Halloran, Clúid’s New Business and Development Manager, said. "Clúid is committed to working in partnership with our stakeholders in Kerry to provide high-quality housing. These 83 new homes will provide much-needed social housing and developments of this scale will continue to assist in alleviating some of the pressure placed on the private rented sector in Killarney too.” Turn to Page 26 to read more about this innovative project.

| By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council has this week erected a steel frame in front of a High St premises to “safeguard the public using the street below”. Earlier this week a steel frame was placed in front of the building to prevent it from collapsing onto the street below. Last September the Council issued a warning to the owners of 71 High Street telling them they had 28 days to make the structure safe. The notice, which was seen at the time by the Killarney Advertiser, stated that the building is a dangerous structure and that remedial works need to be carried out to "Render the building safe, such that it does pose a danger to public or any adjoining properties".

Currently, Julie’s Barbershop rents the premises. However, as the actual property owner/ landlord has not taken any action since the original and several further notices were served, the Council was forced to take action. “This is a designated Dangerous Structure at 71 High Street, Killarney. Various notices have been issued to the owners and occupiers and the Council has now decided, in exercise of its powers under the Roads Act, 1993, to erect this structure in order to safeguard the public using the street below. The measures are being implemented on foot of recommendations by our structural consultants to protect the public using the public road and street,” a Council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.

New asphalt plant goes against smoke free zone | By Sean Moriarty Residents of the Clasheen area have expressed concerns that Roadstone is to build a mobile asphalt plant on the site of the old quarry on the Cork road.

GIVING TO OTHERS: Killarney Gardai have this week launched their ‘Christmas Together’ campaign. Pictured were: Superintendent Flor Murphy and Garda Brendan O’Donovan. Killarney Gardai launch ‘Christmas Together’ campaign

They have raised concerns after the construction firm recently changed a planning permission request with Kerry County Council. They are also worried that the new plant will go against Killarney Smoke Free Zone policy that came into effect on September 1. The Clasheen Quarry is within the boundaries of the Killarney Smoke Free Zone. Planning permission for this asphalt plant was originally received in 2011 but not constructed at the time. It's understood that Roadstone renewed this planning permission sometime in 2015 and 2016 and this is due to expire by early 2021. As recent as last month Roadstone applied for an Air Emissions Licence to operate the asphalt plant. “We are extremely concerned about the effect of this plant which will have emis-

sions of sulphur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and other products of combustion on the local and greater Killarney areas,” resident David Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “This was lodged with Kerry County Council at the end of October and a notice was in a local newspaper on October 14 but they [Roadstone] were not required to erect a local notice.” Residents say they have not been properly informed of the latest development by Roadstone. “There seems to be no knowledge of this plant going ahead and locals are concerned that people of Killarney are not aware of the plan. As Killarney was included in the area where the sale of smokey coal was banned this year should this plant be going ahead? What effect will it have in terms of pollution, air quality and noise and smell?” Kerry County Council declined to comment on the matter. “As this is a live planning matter, the Council is not in a position to comment,” a Council official told the Killarney Advertiser. Roadstone declined to comment when contacted by the Killarney Advertiser.

A Killarney Garda has launched a ‘Christmas Together’ campaign to acknowledge senior people in the community and the healthcare professionals who protect and care for them. | By Sean Moriarty Garda Brendan O’Donovan’s idea is for locals to donate non-perishable goods or Christmas gifts that local Gardai will then redistribute to the residents of local care homes and community hospitals and to the staff who look after them. “COVID-19 has affected everyone in our community no more so than those living and working in nursing homes and retirement accommodation. This is due to the ongoing health crisis, restricted visiting hours and the loss of friends and family,” Garda O’Donovan told the Killarney Advertiser.

“We are asking our local community to come to our assistance and to donate something to remind the nurses, carers, healthcare staff and senior members of the local community that we are all in this together.” All donations can be dropped to Killarney Garda Station or collection can be arranged before December 14. Donations will be sterilised and isolated for a number of days prior to being distributed. Killarney Gardai have also involved local primary schools where pupils will make personalised Christmas cards to be sent to residents and staff of local care homes and community hospitals.

Columbarium wall to allow photos of deceased loved ones | By Sean Moriarty Local politicians have reacted angrily to a revelation by Kerry County Council that the new columbarium wall at Knockeenduff cost €120,000. The columbarium wall – the first one in the county – will open before the end of this month at Killarney Burial Ground. At Monday’s online Kerry County Council meeting, elected councillors were told that the cost of the wall would have to be recuperated and that each niche on the wall would cost €1,200. The Council’s Director of Services John Breen told the meeting that the cost of a niche, which can hold two urns, was based on cost recuperation. The Council officials wanted to limit the

inscription to just the name of the deceased and their date of death. Cllr Marie Moloney proposed the deceased person’s address be also included. Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae labelled this idea as “too cold”. He led a motion to allow photos of the deceased to be displayed in the niche and this was carried by the meeting. “I have looked at other columbarium walls around the country and some had the option of placing a picture on what I call the plaque and what the Council call the niche. I agree with Cllr Moloney too, there could be many people from the same area with the same names,” Cllr Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser. “I thought it felt a little cold and I was glad that despite the Council still objecting that we got this [permitting photos] overturned.”

Christmas Food Appeal moves ‘On-LION’ For the first time in over 40 years one local group has had to make a major change - by taking their annual food appeal fundraising online. | By Michelle Crean Killarney Lions Club - who, over the past 40 years have delivered thousands of Christmas hampers to needy Killarney families, are once again looking for public support both online and during their traditional street collection, which they hope can go ahead depending on restrictions in place at the time. This year the group have teamed up with local Transition Year students and teachers from the three secondary schools, St Brigid's, St Brendan's College, and Killarney Community College to help them get a stronger presence online and for assembling the hampers once food is purchased. “This year has been tough for many people, so our Christmas Food Appeal is more important than ever," Killarney Lions Club President, John Fuller, said. "We normally depend on our street

collection to raise funds but we know that might be a challenge this year. We approached the Transition Years about setting up online and got a fantastic reaction. They are fully behind the appeal and hopefully that will help to make it a success." The Killarney Lions Club through its members, assists various groups and individuals in and around the community. Lions do this through voluntary activities, fundraising and by holding various types of events in support of a great many local causes. Anyone interested in making a donation can go to GoFundMe: On-LION Christmas Food Appeal, where a target of €2,000 has been set. For further information please contact John Fuller on 087 236 3065 or Denis Doolan on 087 967 0635 or email dindoolan@gmail.com.

Seán, who plays Gaelic football for the Rathmore club, has seen the emergency helicopter in action in the skies over Killarney and wanted to do something to keep the service going. Sean, who is also growing a moustache as part of Movember, was particularly impressed when he heard about the swiftness of its actions. “The plan is to do 15 sets of 10kms in the month of November," he told the Killar-

ney Advertiser. “I would like to do more but I am not sure if my legs would take it. I have already exceeded my €2,000 target but I want to push that out even further.” And he thanked everyone for their generous support. New Killarney bypass makes slow progress | By Sean Moriarty The urgently needed and long-awaited new road between Farranfore and Killarney is moving slowly in the right direction.

EXCLUSIVE

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES: Steve O'Mahony gets help from his daughter Alexis as he records tracks for his debut album

Father’s debut dance album for Alexis

The father of a four-year-old Killarney girl who suffers from a rare condition has released his first online album to raise funds for his daughter. | By Sean Moriarty Alexis O’Mahony, from Woodlawn, and her parents, urgently need a wheelchair accessible vehicle as she has outgrown her car seat making it difficult and uncomfortable for her on long journeys to Dublin for necessary appointments. Steve and Teresa are 24 hour carers for the little girl who has a rare primary metabolic condition called Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Deficiency which has led to a brain abnormality called Ventriculomegaly as well as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, global developmental delay, double hip displacement, cortical visual impairment and sleeping difficulties. Steve is a DJ and is well-known for his work in local night clubs as well as occasional behind the scenes work with Radio Kerry. He has not worked since March as he needed to cocoon to protect his daughter, and with the bars and hotels closed there was no work available. Instead, he used the lockdown to complete his first album – titled ‘Mid 11’ – which has now been released on Spotify and other online platforms. He will put the donations from the album's sale towards an upgraded car. “'Mid 11’ consists of 11 dance tracks across various electronic genres. Some of these tunes were lying around unfinished for up to five years but from last March the necessity to stay at home helped me create new habits and refocus on music,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “This was produced entirely between March and September at home in the small hours when the house settled down and quietened after a busy day. ‘Aalexis’ is my artist name, a slight deviation from

the small girl who shaped my life experiences and influenced me. This is also my heartfelt way of just saying a small thank you to everyone who has donated to Alexis's campaign to date. It is my gift to you for your kindness. Lots more music will be released in the weeks and months ahead, both commercial and underground, so stay tuned. It is difficult not be able to road test tracks these days in the clubs but without a shadow of a doubt those clubbing days will come back too.”

DOWNLOAD

The album can be downloaded on various music streaming Apps including Spotify (by searching Aalexis) or Apple Music, Beatport, Deezer, Tidal and iTunes. From there it will be possible to reach the ‘LetsHelpAlexis’ link where funds can be donated. “If you like what you hear all I ask is that you hit the donate button on my artist page which links to the GoFundMe page for my brave daughter's campaign,” he added. Steve also has a message to people who are finding the current Level 5 restrictions difficult. Unlike the first lockdown between March and June, people are not able to get out and about as much during the shorter winter days. “This year is testing for many. Do something creative. Paint, write poetry, learn an instrument, write a song or a book, produce music, cook, learn how to be a tattoo artist, get the fingers dirty in the garden,” he said. “Basically whatever floats your boat. It is so therapeutic and you will discover some hidden talents inside that you can grow and foster and improve overtime. Rome wasn't built in a day!”

And while it will be another five years at the earliest before construction will begin, the project will soon enter Phase Two according to Kerry County Council officials. Phase One started in March this year when the Council appointed Jacob’s Engineering Ireland as the consultant engineers. Their task is to take the project from feasibility and concept stage to the statutory stages; Environmental Impact Statement, Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) and Public Hearings. At Monday’s Kerry County Council meeting in Tralee, officials confirmed to elected members that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) had approved the concept and feasibility report which included link roads between the existing network in Killarney and the new project.

The next step, in this slow process, is the selection of a route option which will allow engineers to draw up plans for the project. “It is hoped to have plans submitted to An Bord Pleanála by the end of 2024,” a Council official told the meeting. This project was originally suspended in 2012 and was forced back to pre-planning stages earlier this year as a result of that delay. Council officials warn that a similar economic crash to eight years ago could spell the end of the project. “The timescale for the development of this road scheme is contingent on securing planning consent, the approval of the relevant sanctioning authorities and on the necessary funding for the scheme,” the Council official added. Cllr Brendan Cronin, Mayor of Killarney, brought the motion before the meeting. TTI were due to present the maps of the route options to members of Killarney Municipal District in the coming weeks, but that is delayed due to current crowd gathering regulations.

CCTV plan for town centre | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Municipal District is to apply for funding from the Department of Justice for CCTV in Killarney. Cllr Niall Kelleher has been a long-time supporter of a CCTV system to monitor the town’s streets. The best option, he believes, is that the CCTV monitoring station should be installed in Killarney Garda Station. “It would give them real time access to any given incident and allow them deploy the correct resources if needed,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. However, there are Data Protection issues that need clarifying before such as task could be allowed to be managed by the Gardai. An interim solution is to place a CCTV

EXCLUSIVE

20.11.2020

recording station in a secure Council owned building. This would not be monitored in real time and, instead, footage of incidents would be released, at a later date, for investigation purposes, provided certain data laws are followed. The Killarney Advertiser understands that KMD would need at least 35 cameras to effectively monitor the town centre and certain approach roads. Kerry County Council said: “The matter is currently under consideration on a national level whereby a working group from An Garda Síochána is examining the concept from a data protection point of view of An Garda Síochána acting as joint controllers with the Local Authority in respect of Community CCTV. The outcome of the findings of this group is awaited.”

Student named 'Young Economist of the Year' A St Brendan’s College student this week received an award after winning the overall Junior Category at the 'Young Economist of the Year' with a project entitled “Can Economics Help to Save the World?” | By Michelle Crean The ‘Young Economist of the Year’, won by Tom Knoblauch, is an economics competition for secondary school students across the island of Ireland. The competition is run in conjunction with the Professional Development Service for teachers. YEOTY, as it has become affectionately known, is now in its seventh year and is developing into a significant national awards event for the enjoyment

and promotion of economics. Commencing in 2013, the initiative has grown from strength to strength with an increasing number of participants. This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions it was a virtual ceremony, which featured both the Minister for Finance Paschal Donoghue, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland Gabriel Makhlouf, as guest speakers.

RESEARCH

Tom chose to research a topic that was of both interest to him, and relevant to his

ECONOMICS AWARD: Tom Knocblauch winner of the overall Junior Category at the 'Young Economist of the Year' pictured with Business Teacher Eimear Buckley and Acting Principal Hugh Rudden at St Brendan’s College.

generation. "Increasingly we see the impact of man’s interference on our planet at a macro level through examples such as the massive fires in California and numerous major floods, and I sought to understand how this relates to my life at a micro level, both in its impact and in my ability to influence it," Tom said. Tom’s project looked at the approach the Government is taking, in particular in relation to cutting CO2 emissions and identified some pitfalls. He made some

recommendations on how the Government could make a stand in taking the current critical position forward. This approach will not single handedly solve the current environmental crisis that is beginning to unfold, but it will make a material start in ensuring that this planet can be enjoyed by children for generations to come. “Tom worked really hard in completing this project, I am delighted for Tom to receive such a prestigious award," his Business Teacher Eimear Buckley said.

Allow people travel outside county - say hoteliers Hoteliers are calling on the Government to allow people to travel outside their county and to permit indoor dining in hotels, including for non-residents, as part of its reduced restrictions for reopening society safely this December. Bernadette Randles, Chair of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) Kerry branch, says these measures will ensure hotels in Kerry and across the country can reopen in a safe manner,in controlled environments.

DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS

“It is clear that Christmas will be very different this year. Nonetheless there is still an expectation that people will be able to travel to family outside their county, and hotels can be an important part of the infrastructure in facilitating this safely. We are urging the Government to recognise the important role hotels can play as part of the solution for a safer Christmas,” she said. "Public health is our number one priority. Hotels provide very safe, highly-controlled, spacious environments with extensive measures in place to minimise the risk from COVID-19. The sector’s proven track record is borne out by statistics which show that hotels have been associated with very few clusters (0.14%) since March.” Ms Randles added that "by allowing indoor dining, including for non-residents, the Government can provide a safer option this year". "The controlled environment of hotels can help to minimise the number and extent of social gatherings in home set-

tings, thereby significantly reducing the risk this Christmas."

SEVEN DAYS' NOTICE

The IHF is asking for at least seven days’ notice of the revised restrictions for December so hotels can plan effectively. “There are five key weeks of trading available to hotels when they reopen at the start of December so it is vital that hotels can operate as fully as possible while obviously staying within the restrictions. This trading period can act as a lifebuoy in terms of sustaining the early few months of the year. With two weeks of preparatory time remaining, and the necessity for reasonable lead-in times after such a long closure period, realistic advance notice is crucial.” Before entering Level 5 restrictions, hotel revenues were already down by over 80% nationally. "As a result of the current restrictions, revenues have collapsed even further and there is a real sense within the sector that hotels are being disproportionately affected.

Call for public to stay away from Tomies Wood | By Michelle Crean The NPWS and the Council are asking people to refrain from going to Tomies Wood for now until ongoing works are complete. Cars parking on the road are causing significant problems for residents at the location and the contractor accessing the site which is delaying completion of the project. It's expected that the road will reopen on schedule in early December (weather dependent). "The ongoing works will be in place for three weeks depending on the weather and water levels," a spokesperson for NPWS said. "We would ask all potential users to refrain from visiting or using the roadway and internal trails in Tomies Wood, due to the ongoing work from a health and safety perspective. We would ask all members of the public to

refrain from visiting the site until further notice, to adhere to all on-site signage and to refrain from entering what will be a construction site for the duration of the works. Regrettably, in recent weeks some visitors have ignored the site safety signage and this has led to delays in the project and caused a nuisance to adjoining property owners through inconsiderate parking on the adjacent public roadway." Works will commence in the coming week to repair the flood-damaged areas of the road on the Dinis Peninsula. The proposed works will also be in place for an approximate period of three weeks depending on the weather and water levels. This will result in the closure of the Dinis loop to all members of the public and for all purposes, from the Arthur Vincent Hostel in Killarney National Park to the car park at the back gate to Dinis on the N71.

Friary to sell Trócaire’s Christmas ‘Gifts of Love’

Killarney’s Franciscan Friary is the only local outlet to offer Trócaire’s Christmas ‘Gifts of Love’ this year. | By Sean Moriarty The development agency sells a range of Christmas gifts which allows the charity to provide families in the developing world with clean water, essential tools, livestock and help with education. There are 17 Trócaire gifts to choose from, such as chicks, beehives and solar lamps, ranging in price from €5 to €1,000. Due to restrictions The Franciscan Friary office now offers a telephone and email service for Mass Cards and this service will be expanded to include the sale of Trócaire gift packs. “Christmas is a time of giving and we are delighted to offer this service to the people of Kerry,” Fr Eamonn O’Driscoll told the Killarney Advertiser. The Dubliner, who joined the Killarney Friary this summer, can trace his family

roots to Valentia Island. Between 1985 and 1991 he spent five years on a mission in Zimbabwe. “I have seen first-hand the work of Trócaire,” said Fr Eamonn, who celebrated his 69th birthday on Wednesday.

PRIVATE PRAYER

The Friary will remain open for private prayer between 7.30am and 7pm each day and the Friars also broadcast a daily Mass at 10am via its Facebook page. “The Killarney community have been very good to us and this is our way of giving back to them,” recently appointed Fr Eamonn added. While the parish office remains closed, staff will be on hand between 10am and 4.30pm each day to answer queries and process Mass offerings. The office can be contacted on 064 66 31066 or killarney@franciscans.ie.

'The Secret Garden' was performed by Killarney Drama Circle to an audience scattered in kitchens and living rooms as far afield as Canada. Some drank tea, one or two held a glass of wine, while others seemed to be in the process of eating a meal – such were the comforts of ‘Zoom Theatre’, playing to an international ‘crowd’ housebound by COVID restrictions. Anne Alcock, a counsellor, was amongst those invited to the puppet performance, under the direction of Uzbekistan-born playwright and producer Rayla Tadjimatova, with puppets made in collaboration with artist Eveleen Murphy. Anne reflected on how some plays can engage peoples' collective attention through metaphor and narrative because they impact of our real lives. "This production follows on from an earlier show in which, Rodger, arriving from another planet, lands in Kerry," she said. "Lost and looking for a friend, he ultimately rejoices when he connects with the cheerful village community of Baa-Lorglin. Time has moved on, Rodger has long returned to his own planet, and now humans are in the grip of despair during COVID-19 lockdown. Where is Rodger? The humans need his help now the joy of singing and dancing and sharing of gifts has ceased to enliven the inhabitants of the land. As if by providence, Rodger returns, and assures his friends there is no need for sadness because life’s happiness is found within one’s own heart, just as learned on his first visit."

From l to r from top: Sylvia Thompson (Narrator); Sheila Barclay and Carl Herpels (Bee and Baa), Margaret Slattery (Daniel O’Donnell), Teresa Shirtliff (Alice), Rayla Tadjimatova (Director), Michael Lynch (Jazzy), Mary Wood (Katie), Janet Murphy (Rodger), and Geraldina Harnett (Lucy Lu).

Some, like Leonor Bethencourt of Dublin, found the Zoom platform perfect for puppet theatre while others, including Dorothy from Cape Clear, reckoned the show exposed the hidden potential of technology for artistic expression. Anne added that she enjoyed the timely therapeutic qualities of the performance for overall mental health. "The theme is focused and simple and it is no distraction that each puppeteer is visible to the audience," she said. "To create a puppet-show with a cast of actors brought together by technology and still create an illusion of togetherness is no mean feat. Rayla launched herself and her enthusiastic cast of talented actors on a steep learning curve with this production and the audience reaction demonstrated that they came through it with success." Additional performances of 'The Secret Garden' are scheduled for next week, on November 25 and 26 at 7.30pm. All welcome! Free link by request from rayla.tadjimatova19@outlook.com.

HELPING OTHERS: Killarney artists John Sheahan and Olivia O'Carra have donated some of their work towards Enable Ireland Kerry's 'Wild Atlantic Art' fundraiser. Photo: Michelle Crean

Creative work donated by Killarney artists

Artists from Killarney have generously gifted some of their creative work to help a Kerry charity which is struggling with funding due to the year that's passed. | By Michelle Crean Enable Ireland Kerry Services, have, like most charities, felt the brunt of COVID through their fundraising this year. And like so many, Enable Ireland, who are based in Tralee but have clients of all ages across Kerry who avail of their services, have felt the pinch. Community fundraiser for the service, Sean Scally, asked many artists across the county for their support, and without hesitation received a tranche of replies. Amongst them were Killarney artists John Sheahan from Tiernaboul, Olivia O'Carra from Park Drive, and Mark Eldred, who have each donated some of their work towards Enable Ireland Kerry's 'Wild Atlantic Art' art sale fundraiser. The pottery department at Muckross House also donated a bowl, while photographer Peter Cox also gave a print of his work. “Lots of our fundraising events and activities have been cancelled due to COVID so we came up with an online fundraiser for our services,” Sean told the Killarney Advertiser.

“The response has been amazing and we have secured donations from artists from Cork and Donegal, including quite a few from Kerry. Without the support of the artists we wouldn't be able to do this. The arts sector is also struggling this year and we were very conscious of that and didn't want to put them under pressure. We'd like to say a huge thanks to them all for supporting Enable." John, who runs web company Egg Design and is an artist on the side, said he was delighted to participate. "A friend of mine saw it online and sent me the link. I donated two pieces and one sold straight away. I donate to charity every year through Egg Design but I never donated my art before." Olivia took up art after retiring as a Science teacher from Presentation 18 years ago. She said she was more than happy to help. "I just think it's a good cause." Video appeal features message from frontline workers

Hospice virtual Christmas tree now live online

Rathmore man Aidan O'Mahony is part of a new video appeal from frontline workers issuing a heartfelt plea to their communities to continue to keep their guard up in order to stop the spread of COVID-19.

As Christmas is a time to remember loved ones Kerry Hospice has once again launched their annual ‘Light to Remember’ virtual tree.

Launched on Tuesday, the frontline workers are reminding everyone of what communities have achieved already by working together. The video, an inter-agency project between An Garda Síochána, Kerry County Council, the HSE, Cork City Council, and Cork County Council features frontline workers from all the agencies explaining what they miss during COVID-19 restrictions. Although it’s difficult, they ask people in Cork and Kerry to continue to play their part. All have been working for and with their communities throughout the COVID-19 emergency. They are reminding communities that although it’s hard, we all need to continue with the measures needed to stop the spread of the virus.

HOLD FIRM: Rathmore man Aidan O'Mahony is part of a new inter-agency campaign on YouTube asking the public to keep their guard up to continue the fight against COVID-19.

Speech and language therapist Cliona Carroll reminds everyone of the lives we have saved already, while Fiona Leahy asks them to think of the people who will still be with us this Christmas who might not have been. Community Garda Aidan O’Mahony says that this is the result of everyone working together, saying “We did that, and we did it together – because

it only works if we all do it. We need to keep our guard up.” Recognising that sticking to the restrictions is hard, Cliona Carroll says that she misses being able to give her mum a hug, while Aaron Williams from Kerry Civil Defence explains that he misses seeing his grandparents. To see the video, go to YouTube: Keeping

However, this year is a bit different to previous years as normally they’d have a real light up ceremony on the grounds of the hospital, but due to COVID this couldn’t take place. Also, the virtual light was €5 but now it is an open donation, Andrea O’Donoghue of Kerry Hospice Foundation explained. “There is also a live tribute book where you can add the person you are lighting the light for. It has been a huge success and is so lovely to see so many heartfelt tributes.” Anyone who’d like to participate and help raise funds for KHF can click www.lighttoremember.com. “You also have the option of receiving a card that you can send on to the people you are donating the light to. It is a lovely thought for people who are home or away, or no longer with us.”

Macra members continue their activities | By Michelle Crean COVID may have put a halt to their many meet ups but Killarney Macra members are continuing their interactions - albeit online for now. While 2020, so far, has not granted most people the usual opportunities to socialise, the club has been working hard to promote its community spirit and create a positive communication space for young people. The Killarney branch of Macra na Feirme was re-established in 2016 and was created to support the social, cultural and personal well-being of young people and adults who have a rural connection. Since then the club has gone from strength to strength, winning many awards in Macra hosted talent shows and sports events. Hikes, nights out, quizzes, farm visits, workshops and mystery tours are just some of the brilliant activities that have taken place over the years. Members have also dedicated many hours to organising and holding charity fundraisers, such as a jive dance night in 2019, in aid of the palliative care

unit in University Hospital Kerry. During the summer, the club organised various hikes in the county, such as Torc and Kilcummin, whilst also holding weekly outdoor sports events in Killarney. In Level 2 restrictions, several members were able to take part in, and win, the county round of a Macra bowling tournament.

ONLINE ALTERNATIVES

This year, Killarney Macra have been adapting to the restrictions that COVID-19 regulations have placed on its usual schedule of events, by setting up imaginative online alternatives when necessary. They generated lots of engagement amongst their members when a photography competition was held in April, and another competition is set to take place later this month. Many of the club participants have joined in for Zoom quizzes and game nights; often playing the very popular ‘Among Us’. “It’s been a great opportunity to get to know more of the Killarney Macra members and keep in touch with people who we haven’t been able to meet up with,” club member and Social Officer, Rory O’Connor, said.

MOVING ONLINE: Killarney Macra members pictured during a sports night at The Demense before the Level 5 restrictions.

Killarney Macra will continue to offer a diverse range of events that meet the interests of its young members. Over the coming months they will continue to promote their interaction with other Macra groups, as well as hosting games nights, quizzes, competitions and a book club. Killarney Macra hosts monthly online meetings via Zoom and it is a great way to make new friends, share ideas and have a bit of craic! Killarney Macra na Feirme is open to all young people over 17, and it not restricted to those from farming backgrounds. More information on the club can be found on their Facebook page, Instagram account or the Macra na Feirme website.

MOVING ONLINE: Killarney Macra members, pictured enjoying a walk in Kilcummin before the Level 5 restrictions, are continuing their interactions online for now.

New course in revenue management Applications are now open for a new course in revenue management in the hospitality sector targeted at those who are currently unemployed but who have previous experience in the sector and want to up-skill or develop new skills. The course has been developed by South Kerry Skillnet and is being run through the Institute of Technology in Tralee. Network Manager of South Kerry Skillnet Aoife O’Reilly said that through their work with the hotel industry, a significant skills gap has been identified in the area of revenue management across the country. “Ensuring effective revenue manage-

ment is one of the key elements of operating a successful hotel business and the industry has identified a skills deficit in this area going back to 2019.” She pointed out that this element will become even more important in the current challenging marketplace and thus South Kerry Skillnet applied for the funding under the skills connect initiative to this course. The 12 week-long course will be run online from December 4 and offers successful participants a Level 7 special purpose award of a Certificate in Revenue Management. The course will cover the role of the Revenue Manager, Front Office and Customer Relationship Management, Business Re-

porting and Digital Management. The course is being offered free of charge to those currently unemployed and it is being aimed at participants such as those with previous experience in reservations/ revenue management, front office managers/supervisors, general managers and deputy managers as well as members of the sales team, from all parts of Ireland. Aoife added that South Kerry Skillnet are excited to be able to run this national course online and support the hospitality industry and have added a Digital Marketing Module to further support this course. The closing date for applications is November 27, see www.kerryskillnet.ie or contact Aoife directly on 066 9762477.

At the recent Municipal District meeting Cllr Michael Gleeson asked that the Council would encourage property owners to cut their own hedges in areas where they overhang walls and narrow footpaths for all users. “Such overhangs present as a danger to the eyes of children walking and narrows the pathway for all users, particularly so for wheelchair persons,” he said. In reply, the Council stated that it would run a targeted campaign to inform property owners within urban environments that they should ensure that their hedges are not a danger or inconvenience to anyone. The Council also stated that the enforcement officer has commenced identifying locations where hedges need to be trimmed back. ................................................................

Clarification The Killarney Advertiser wishes to clarify a story that appeared in last week’s magazine. We reported that Killarney Municipal District hope to increase the number of murals in the town centre. We showed a photo of the wall mural at St Anthony’s Place depicting the town’s sporting and movie stars. This mural was funded by the management and staff of Dan Linehan’s Bar on College St and was not, in anyway, a Council project. The Killarney Advertiser is happy to clarify the matter.

So, the girls decided to use their own money and buy toys which were then donated to Garda Mary Gardiner in Tralee Garda Station who will drop them to the Adapt Women’s Refuge and Homeless Shelter. School girls' festive acts of kindness | By Michelle Crean

Not only have the Leaving Cert Applied (LVA) students instigated not one - but two - acts of kindness, Third Years have also got in on the act, as well as others who are, this November, remembering those who have died. Following a conversation with their teacher Eilish O'Riordan one afternoon, LCA girls were inspired to help others.

They launched a Christmas card competition throughout the whole school, and to be totally inclusive a winner will be chosen from each year as part of the pack of cards which will be on sale shortly. With funding raised the girls plan to make up hampers for the elderly in Killarney Community Nursing Unit. However, that's not all they're doing, as they have also been thinking about the

money. We got a lovely email from Mary Gardiner thanking us." Third year students also believe in helping others in the local community by supporting the SVP Christmas Food Appeal. They donated non-perishable festive food items to help families and individuals enjoy an extra-special Christmas season. And with November a time for remembering and praying for loved ones each student in the school was given a leaf to remember a person close to them that has passed and two giant trees were created.

Council holds historic first online meeting The first ever online meeting of Kerry County Council took place on Monday following the signing of the necessary ministerial order to enable local authorities to meet remotely and to allow councillors to vote on various matters.

Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen, chaired the meeting from his home and his fellow elected members as well as Council management and the press joined the meeting online. Cllr Connor-Scarteen said that votes on statutory business can now be taken during online meetings following the signing of the legislative requirements to facilitate such votes. "This is the first time in 121 years of Kerry County Council that we have held a meeting using online meeting technol-

ogy so from that point of view, it is very historic in these strange and challenging times. Until now, we were required to meet physically in the one location to deal with statutory business, but following the signing of the necessary legislative provisions, we can now deal with all business at remote or online meetings," he said. Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said that the transition to fully online meetings has been important in continuing to carry out the functions of the local authority. "This is a new way of doing business for everyone involved but we continue to work closely with elected members and the wider community to operate within the current restrictions and to continue to provide essential services and facilities to the people of Kerry," she said.

Clúid Housing completes €18m housing project in Dirreen Clúid Housing’s vision is ‘a society where everyone has a great place to live’. PARTNERSHIP

Clúid, a not-for-profit organisation, manages over 7,900 affordable, high-quality homes and provides housing management services for over 20,000 residents across the country. Clúid aims to achieve its vision by providing quality housing and services that enable people to create homes and thriving communities. The organisation is committed to delivering 3,000 new homes across Ireland before the end of 2022. “Kerry County Council has a large Housing Programme across all delivery streams to provide homes for those in need of long term, secure housing options across the county. Kerry County Council has a very strong working partnership with Clúid Housing to provide homes for people on the Council waiting list. I am delighted to see this project come to fruition and to see these homes finished and people moving in. I hope that the new residents will be very happy and comfortable in their new homes,” Moira Murrell, Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, said.

€18M FUNDING

The scheme was financed through a loan from the Housing Finance Agency (HFA) which Clúid will repay using rents paid by the residents. “The HFA is committed to facilitating and supporting the successful delivery of social housing in Ireland. We are happy to have funded this fantastic development of 83 new homes in Killarney. We look forward to supporting Clúid and Kerry County Council to deliver even more new homes in the future,” said Housing Finance Agency, CEO Barry O’Leary. The Dirreen scheme is comprised of 83 new homes including 22 two bedroom

houses, 43 three-bedroom houses, six single-bedroom apartments and 12 two-bedroom apartments. The new homes are within walking distance of a number of playing fields including Killarney Celtic Football Club and Legion GAA grounds. Local amenities such as shops and services are easily accessible too.

SUSTAINABILITY

The development is one of Ireland’s largest sustainable social housing projects and was delivered in partnership with Killarney based company Thermohouse. Manufacturing took place off-site in Killarney at the Thermohouse factory using their innovative low energy modular build system. “This development here in Killarney is a perfect example of Clúid’s commitment to delivering lower carbon and energy efficient housing for our residents, which are key goals in our soon to be launched Greening Strategy. Our aim, for 2030, is that all new Clúid homes will be 100% powered by renewable energy and will be built with at least 40% less carbon,” Energy and Environmental Manager for Clúid, Susan Vickers said. The homes are airtight and free from any cold bridging. Each property has also been fitted with solar panels and a heat source pump which is a complementary system that provides ventilation, heat recovery and the production of domestic hot water. This enables the building to generate significant energy cost savings over its lifetime and reduce running costs for residents. “We want every Clúid resident to live in a low carbon, energy affordable home, in a

place that promotes positive well-being and sustainable living,” Susan added.

60 YEAR GUARANTEE

The future-proofed homes benefit from a minimum 60-year system design life. Once constructed, the system forms a monolithic reinforced concrete structure, fully wrapped in insulation. Thermohouse can construct up to 60% faster than traditional methods of construction with the modular nature of the construction system reducing labour requirements and streamlining the building process. Thermohouse will also run a pilot project on four of the new homes where the company has installed 4KW solar panels and 4KW of battery storage which is expected to provide at least 50% of the energy requirements needed to run the homes. Via their online portal, Thermohouse will continue to monitor the output and share this information with Clúid to inform future sustainable development. “Clúid’s development in Dirreen is a great example of the benefits of our complete low energy building system which is man-

ufactured off site in our Killarney factory. These homes are future proofed, energy efficient and faster to construct. The approach we have to building homes in Ireland is changing and Thermohouse not only meets the EU’s nZEB requirements, but we also consistently exceed them. Being locally manufactured, we offer a lower carbon footprint for delivery in Ireland,” Michael Cronin, Managing Director of Thermohouse, said.

CLÚID IN KERRY

Clúid has a strong commitment to housing in Kerry, with over 360 homes now in management across the county. In addition to the new homes in Dirreen, Clúid recently delivered 32 new homes in Tralee, 20 new homes in Dingle, in partnership with Dingle Homes, and will shortly complete the renovation of Armagh House in Killarney providing another six homes to people on Kerry County Council’s housing list. Before the end of 2021, Clúid will deliver another 90 homes across Kerry and with another 72 going on site this year for completion in 2022.

Locally distilled whiskey now in shops | By Sean Moriarty The Liberator range of Bonded Whiskeys which is distilled by Wayward Irish Spirits in Fossa is now available in local shops.

PLAYWRIGHT: Tour guide Rory Kirby placed third in the prestigious RTE playwright competition.

Tour guide made of the write stuff

Five Killarney retailers; Carryout; Casey's O'Shea's; Foley's Spar and Daly's SuperValu, now stock the whiskey brand that can trace its very foundation to Irish civil rights hero Daniel O’Connell. Wayward Irish Spirits is a family owned Irish Whiskey company based at the Lakeview Estate in Fossa. It reconnects the founder, Maurice O’Connell, with his family’s roots of supplying spirits to the gentry of Kerry. As early as 1450 the O’Connells were based at Ballycarbery Castle near Cahersiveen, importing wines and brandies

from Spain. The imposition of excise duty in 1661 didn’t stop them and they moved up the coast to Derrynane and grew the business there. “My forebear Daniel O’Connell’s independent spirit and sometimes wayward approach inspires how we craft whiskey at our family’s historic Lakeview Estate on the shores of Lough Leane in Killarney,” Maurice O’Connell said. With Daniel O’Connell’s rise to political prominence, the smuggling was quietly dropped and in 1820 Maurice’s great, great, great-grandfather James (Daniel’s younger brother) moved to the Lakeview Estate. The name Wayward derives from the insult levelled at Daniel O’Connell by the British Prime Minister, Robert Peel, who called him ‘that wayward Irishman’. The family own the insult with pride.

A Killarney tour guide has finished third in the RTÉ PJ O’Connor Radio Drama Awards. | By Sean Moriarty

Rory Kirby worked as a nationwide tour guide with Wild N’Happy Tours in Aghadoe until restrictions came into force earlier this year. As a result, Rory turned his attention to playwriting. His drama ‘The Gypsy Girl’, which is set in Ireland in the 1990s, tells the story of the unstoppable fallout from a one-off, unplanned sexual encounter, between a young married traveller girl and a settled man. It won third place in the 30th annual PJ O’Connor Radio Drama Awards after impressing an international panel of judges. The play will now be recorded and aired by RTÉ Drama On One and Rory pocketed €3,000 for his efforts.

“I am beyond delighted to have placed third,” he said. “Well done to everybody who sat down, wrote a play and entered it in the competition, keep it up and best of luck with all of your writing in the future.” The Tralee man previously won the prestigious GAA McNamee Award after directing ‘Rockumentary’, charting Tralee’s Austin Stacks Club’s successful county championship title bid in 2014. Judge Jesper Bergmann of The Royal Theatre Copenhagen and the Danish Broadcasting Corporation said: "This year's shortlist has proved once again to a jury of non-Irish radio drama specialists that Ireland is indeed fertile soil for new writing, and that the radio drama genre still is attractive to new and upcoming writing talent."

Let your voice be heard A Kerryman at heart, with a passion for great communication, is offering to help people become more confident when speaking in public. Mike Kelly from Speak the Speech, is a London-born actor and coach with a lifetime of visits to Ballinskelligs, South Kerry, where both his parents are from. At the heart of what Mike does is com-

municating well under pressure. Those times when there is a little more at stake and it’s not enough to just say stuff, we have to deliver. Mike’s journey into the world of great communication began 25 years ago when he earned a place at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). "This is where I really learned about being at your best when all eyes are

on you. Being prepared, dealing with nerves, being laser-focused in the buildup to performance. I also learned how to breathe!" Mike’s three years at LAMDA led to roles in London’s West End and numerous TV and film credits including 'Silent Witness' for the BBC and 'The Martian' with Matt Damon. "I made the discovery 10 years ago that so much of what I do is transferable to the work-place and have never looked back. Now, of course, I do this in the virtual world too."

How does this help you? Since then Mike has coached many hundreds of people around the world. "I could never have dreamt how impactful, enjoyable and empowering this work can be. The focus now is the virtual world. The camera can suck the life out of us, we lose confidence in our online presence, we switch the video off…..and the list goes on. These sessions are for real working people with real challenges. They will leave feeling far more confident in how they come across. They will have the gift of consistency."

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Take a fresh look at your garden As leaves fall and flowers fade, it is an ideal time to take a fresh look at your garden. Are you happy with what you see? Many people look for plants which will give interest all year round, usually meaning coloured foliage and flowers. However, plants can add interest in many ways, apart from foliage and flower. Bark is an obvious place to start. Dogwoods and willows are renowned for their beautifully coloured bars, and look great among bamboos and grasses. Dogwoods to try are Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ with bright orange bark and a tidy growth habit, or ‘Winter Flame’ with bright red tips on orange stems. Willows to try are Salix ‘Britzensis’, orange stems, or S. nigra, which has almost black bark with big silver catkins in spring. These shrubs are best cut back to ground level each spring to ensure bright new growth. There are two techniques you can use; coppicing, which is cutting the plant down at ground level. Pollarding on the other hand is where the branches are cut back to the main stem controlling the size of the tree. Willows are particularly suited to this type of shaping. Shape also creates interest, I often advise people to think of the skyline of their garden when planting. Having different heights and shapes contouring against the sky can really shape the garden. For example, conifers such as Juniper ‘skyrocket’ or the weeping, but very narrow Chamaecyparis nootakatensis ‘Vanden Akker’ are fantastic for adding height but not width, and are evergreen too.

They are well suited to a smaller garden, where you might want a tree for height but don’t have much space. The narrow columnar copper beech or a cone shaped hornbeam are also trees to consider for contour. Weeping trees give a different shape again, in my opinion the narrow, tightly weeping beech, ‘Purple Fountain’ adds an air of mystery to the skyline. As anyone who reads this column probably knows, I have a great fondness for all things twisted…well, in the plant world at any rate! Cryptomeria spiralis is a beautiful, bright green, mid-sized conifer, with a very interesting growth habit, as its name suggests. The branches twist around themselves giving it a very whimsical look! Corylus contorta is the twisted hazel, which also comes in a purple leaved variety, Corylus contorts ‘Red Majestic’, which is an absolute must for any large garden. An option in a smaller garden is Corylus contorta ‘Scooter’, which is a compact variety. It also comes grafted onto a standard stem, which is a great option for a centrepiece or pot. I have a beautiful twisted hawthorn in my own garden, Crateagus laevigata ‘Pink Corkscrew’, which is covered in pink flowers in April, and looks stunning in the winter. Most contorted plants will be fairly slow growing and do not need much pruning. One thing to look out for is suckers at the base of the stem which can take over.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT

KILLARNEY

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Kerry family pledge to smash five new world records A family of “serial” Guinness World Record breakers are attempting to smash five new records this Christmas to support the work of humanitarian aid agency, GOAL. The Hickson family from Annascaul, are to undertake their latest world record-breaking attempts to promote the much-loved annual GOAL Mile, now in its 39th year, which due to COVID-19 is going virtual this year. This gives people all over Ireland a unique opportunity to do their mile at a time and place of their choosing over Christmas – either on their own or in their own safe social bubble. GOAL is hoping that 10,000 people will register from mid-November to do a virtual GOAL Mile. The Hickson family – who to date have clocked up 15 world records - are setting themselves the following mile record targets in the hope of making the Guinness Book of Records again, whilst promoting a great cause at the same time. Eamonn (32), a radio presenter and producer with Radio Kerry, will try to set the fastest time to crawl one mile (male) ; the current record is 23 minutes 45 seconds. Jason (28), a farmer, will attempt to dribble a basketball one mile in less than the current record of six minutes and one second. Sandra (40), a psychiatric nurse in Cork, will try the fastest mile carrying a 40Ib pack to beat the current nine minute record, and Sandra’s partner, 34-year-old Nathan Missin who is a commercial pilot,

will try the fastest mile carrying a 60lb pack. The current record is eight minutes and he will also try the fastest mile carrying a 100lb pack, which currently has a record of nine minutes 25 seconds. "We have had great fun over the years setting records and we enjoy the challenge. But being able to set new challenges to support GOAL and the incredible work it is doing supporting communities most in need in 13 countries around the world is very rewarding. We are up for it and we hope to reach our targets!” Eamonn said.

DETERMINED

GOAL Board member and Kerry football

legend, Jimmy Deenihan, added a huge thanks to the Hickson family. "They are a very determined group of people and we wish them luck in their efforts to smash a host of new world records. COVID-19 has taken a grip and changed all of our lives, but sadly it is the most vulnerable communities around the world who are impacted most. I am appealing to Kerry families to get out and do a virtual mile for GOAL this Christmas while observing Government guidelines and social distancing is strictly observed.” To help GOAL hit the magic 10,000 miles in the spirit of helping those in need register at: www.goalglobal.org/goal-mile/ by next Tuesday, November 24.

A world record has been set as a wealthy Chinese pigeon racing fan paid over €1.6 million for a Belgian-bred bird. The final price was settled on Sunday following a two-week auction - which saw two buyers drive up the price by €280,000 in the final half hour. It beat the previous Belgian-bred Armando behind by €350,000. Successful breeder Gaston Van de Wouwer, who retired at 76, and his son are too busy to continue the famed pigeon coop. All 445 birds were put on auction and the overall sale was closing in on €5m. China often features one-loft racing, where pigeons all get used to one coop for months and then are released many hundreds of miles away to make their way back with their unique sense of orientation and special speed training. Prize pots can reach into the tens of millions of Euros!

Why we need to be very afraid Regardless of what side of the political fence you stand, one thing seems certain - Donald Trump’s reign as US President is coming to a close. The real day of reckoning is December 14 when the Electoral Colleges meet to formally declare the winner of each State and the election. The next important date is January 20 next year, the scheduled day for the inauguration of the next US President. Until that date, Trump remains

in power and this means he is in charge of everything - including a decision to wage war on any given country - and that is why we need to be very afraid. President Ronald Reagan invaded Grenada. President George H.W. Bush invaded Panama and Somalia. President Bill Clinton used military force in Iraq, Haiti, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Sudan and Kosovo all without congressional approval. (President George W. Bush didn’t declare war on Afghanistan or Iraq, but Con-

gress authorised the use of military force for those engagements). President Barack Obama ordered targeted military strikes in Libya in 2011 and dozens of unmanned drone strikes in Pakistan without congressional approval, according to history.com. Trump is the only president in recent memory not to go to war. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? He has just over two months to reverse this and that is why the world at large needs to pay attention.

World premiere of moving documentary tonight Award-winning feature documentary ‘Kilimanjaro Mama’ will have its world premiere on YouTube tonight (Friday) at 8pm.

HELPING: 'The Running Fireman' Alex O'Shea is taking part in a challenge for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Running fireman takes on around the world challenge Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and Cork fire fighter 'The Running Fireman' Alex O'Shea are asking the public to take on the challenge of helping virtual Guide Dog Rover to travel the world in 80 days. The public are also being asked to join in and record their walks, runs and cycles to help Virtual Guide Dog Rover circumnavigate the globe by January 31. All proceeds will go towards supporting the life-changing work of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Alex previously ran 32 marathons in 32 counties in less than 16 days on behalf of the charity. "Rover started his 40,000km 'journey' on Friday at Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind National Training Centre in Cork," Alex said. "We have people out walking the dog, walking with the kids, running and cycling, all counting steps and helping Rover to travel virtually around the world by January 31. So far, we have had distances logged from Malaysia, China,

Brazil, Austria and of course Ireland. Given we're in lockdown, this is a fun opportunity to stay physically and mentally fit whilst helping a worthwhile cause." Tim O'Mahony, General Manager of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind added a "huge thanks" to Alex who came up with this idea and who has once again put his time and energy behind a challenge to support their work. "It costs approximately €53,000 to train a Guide Dog. When you consider the loss of all of our community fundraising activities due to COVID-19, efforts like this make a real difference to our work changing the lives of those who are vision impaired and families of children with autism." To join the fun simply make a donation at www.justgiving.com/Around-theworld-in80days and then get active, sending in your kilometres/miles to www.facebook.com/challengealex. All proceeds go to Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The uplifting documentary invites audiences into the inspiring world of Kerry woman Louise Quill and documents her unrelenting passion and determination to give the children of Tanzania the best possible chance in life. This 60 minute feature length documentary, which received critical acclaim at numerous international film festivals in Ireland, USA and Canada, and has picked up the award for best feature film at last year’s Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF), illustrates that one person really can make a difference. During the documentary, directed by Malcolm Willis from Icy Peaks Media and produced by Brian Hurley from Big Handsome Media, Louise shares her heart-breaking, human and inspirational story of why she set up the Tír na nÓg Orphanage and school in Tanzania in 2006, what drives her, the impact it has had on her own health and well-being and the sacrifices she has made in her own life to ensure that these children can realise their own hopes and dreams.

GLOBAL AUDIENCE

“We are thrilled to be able to reach a glob-

al audience so that we can share the story of Tír na nÓg with the world,” Louise, who the children affectionately call ‘Big Mama’, told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We feel it is an uplifting story that puts life into perspective for everyone that views it. It offers hope in hopeless times and spreads a message of love.” She added that since the project began back in 2006, they have developed many projects from a day care centre, kindergarten and primary school, to re-homing projects and feeding programmes. “We employ almost 40 African people with this set to rise once the building of our new children's village begins. Along with our NGO Article 25, which is a humanitarian architectural charity, we are set to construct a large children's village complete with cottage style housing, library, dining hall and recreation and living space. The release of ‘Kilimanjaro Mama’ will hopefully help us to achieve this.” Louise’s mother Carmel also features heavily in the documentary and expresses both concern and hints of disappointment at the life her daughter has chosen, explaining that she wishes Louise would have her own children and remain in Ireland full-time. For more information see www.tirnanogorphanage.com.

DOCUMENTARY: Louise Quill will feature in award-winning documentary ‘Kilimanjaro Mama’ for its world premiere on YouTube tonight (Friday) at 8pm.

Over half of Irish students say coming out will lead to bullying A poll from BeLonG To Youth Services, the national LGBTI+ youth organisation, shows 52% of students believe that if someone in their school comes out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans, they will be bullied. The data comes from research conducted ahead of Stand Up Awareness Week,

Ireland’s largest anti-LGBTI+ bullying campaign, with 58% of second-level schools participating in last year’s event. For 11 years, Stand Up Awareness Week has been a time for second-level schools to take a stand against the anti-LGBTI+ bullying, harassment, and name-calling that silences many students and can result in serious mental health challenges. As part of Stand Up Awareness Week,

running from November 16-20, every second-level school in Ireland has been given a free resource pack with information, activities, and advice to create an LGBTI+ friendly school environment. This finding compounds the 2019 School Climate Survey which revealed that an alarming 73% of LGBTI+ students feel unsafe at school. Some 77% of LGBTI+ students experience verbal harassment,

38% experience physical harassment, and 11% experience physical assault based on their sexual orientation, gender or gender expression. “Stand Up Awareness Week is a time for all schools to take action against homophobic, transphobic, and biphobic bullying and show they welcome, value, and support LGBTI+ students," Moninne Griffith, CEO BeLonG To Youth Services said.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Applying to colleges

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Exfoliation for smoother skin Exfoliating your skin twice a week can really combat any changes. As we age, the dead cells pile up faster, so we need to keep on top of it all the time. It's satisfying to scrub away the remnants on your skin, especially when it leaves you with immediately smoother skin. It's tempting to scrub harder to get a better result, but this is not the case as the products are so advanced that they do an amazing job. There's a few different types to choose from depending on your skin type and sensitivity. Often as we age our cheeks get more sensitive. Something you may have used in your 30s isn't suitable later on in life. Don't be afraid to change, as the saying goes "a change is as good as a rest". My absolute go to exfoliator is Sothys DF Desquacrem forte from the cosmaceuti-

cal line of products. It is boosted by salicylic acid and micro grains of rice to combine deep cleansing action and skin pore exfoliation. It's a triple action exfoliator; the grains act as scrubbers and clients are used to this type of exfoliator for mechanical action. The salicylic acid, which you need to leave on the skin for 5-10 minutes for it to really get to work, dissolves the dead cells, purifies the pores and promotes skin radiance. Lipoamino acid as a mild cleanser helps protect the skin. Micro gel peeling is an oil to gel to milk cleanser. When you add water it starts to dissolve the little scrubbers and changes the texture to a beautiful soft milk, leaving the skin silk soft with a layer of hydration. For a simple to use, quick working exfoliator, this is ideal. I love the way it leaves my skin feeling. If I don’t have a lot of time but need to exfoliate, this is a great option.

in the UK – start the process early!

Hundreds of Irish students apply to attend university in the UK each year. While students and parents have queries about what Brexit will mean for Irish students studying in the UK, interest in applying for colleges in Northern Ireland, Wales, England and Scotland remains high. Students make the choice for various reasons including the limited places here in Ireland for courses in the health professions resulting in very high points. But there are other reasons – the chance to live abroad in an English speaking country while completing third level education, the chance to specialise in a particular subject from the beginning of the degree, or to pursue postgraduate study having completed an undergraduate degree here in Ireland. There are also excellent links from QQI courses (PLCs) here in Ireland for follow-on studies to degree programmes in the UK.

APPLY EARLY

Although there are some courses and colleges that have an early deadline of October 15, the vast majority of courses are open for applications up until the January 15 deadline - but the advice is to apply early! Students must apply through the UCAS system (University and College Admissions Service), which is the equivalent of CAO, for colleges in Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England. The application process for UCAS is different to CAO so it is important to familiarise yourself with the process and start the application in plenty of time by checking out the undergraduate section of www.ucas.com. The key things are as follows: Start by registering on ‘Apply’ at www. ucas.com/apply. You may apply as an individual or through a centre, school or college. If it is the latter you will need a ‘buzzword’. Students can apply for up to five courses through UCAS (a lot less than CAO) so due consideration must be given to the ones you are going to choose. Each choice is considered separately so there

is no order of preference as you have in CAO, and your chosen colleges/universities won’t see where else you have applied for. You must enter your full education history even if you are awaiting exams and results. For example if you have results ‘pending’, you will still need to send on results to UCAS when you get them. If you have had paid full or part-time employment, include the details. Voluntary or unpaid work can be mentioned in your personal statement. You will need to write a personal statement showing colleges why you want to study the course (more details on this next week). Provide a reference from a teacher, advisor or professional who knows you academically or professionally. Pay the fee of £26 for applying for multiple courses. There are lots of helpful resources available for applicants on the UCAS website and on their social platforms so consult them before applying.

read A Promised Land Author: Barack Obama 'A Promised Land' by Barack Obama is a riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making. In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, the former American president tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency - a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil. Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation's highest office. Reflecting on the presidency, he offers a unique and exploration of both the awesome reach and the limits of presidential power, as well as singular in-

sights into the dynamics of US partisan politics and international diplomacy. This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama's conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

Billie Eilish 'Therefore I Am' After releasing her album 'My Future' back in July, Billie Eilish has finally shared her new single 'Therefore I Am'. The uptempo pop and dark pop track was written by Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell. The 18-year-old artist dropped her song this past week and fans couldn't help but wonder if she was sending a subtle message to her trolls. The title will likely be familiar to people as it is the translation of the famous quote from philosopher René Descartes, "I think, therefore I am" - which in Latin is written "cogito, ergo sum".

NEWS

The statement means that in knowing one’s own existence through the act of thought, this is proof of the reality of one’s own mind. Lyrically, Eilish sings about disregarding people's opinions towards her and explains that she is an individual with a mind of her own and does not require anybody making decisions on her behalf. A music video for 'Therefore I Am' premiered on Eilish's YouTube channel on November 12, and was featured on the Viacom Times Square billboard.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

10 guidelines for your fitness journey It’s coming into “silly season”, perhaps the silliness won’t be as prevalent this year, but that doesn’t mean the health and fitness silliness won’t be out in full force over the next few weeks.

5. YOU DO YOU Your fitness journey is yours. It’s not anyone else’s, and it’s not a competition with anyone else. The only person you need to worry about is you. Your workouts, your mindset, your results...you do you!

We all get bombarded with mixed messages about our health and fitness in the lead up to the whole 'New Year, New You' campaigns. The key thing is to do what is best for you. Seek out professional advice and find something that you can still see yourself doing and enjoying come the following January, not miserably looking for “the magic bullet” every 12 months. We’ve put together a list of our top 10 guidelines to bust through the silly season messages for you:

6. WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL There are lots of options out there of who to work with. Some people think that they can make it up as they go. This might be fine once in a while, but it speaks volumes about what you think of a profession that sometimes involves more years in school than a doctor!

1. MOVE OFTEN, MOVE WELL There’s no greater guiding principle than to move often and move well. We believe this to be the foundation of everyone’s fitness journey -- high-quality human movement. We recommend that you move for at least 15-30 minutes per day, and a few times a week go for a little more. 2. HAVE FUN Whatever you do, do it with a smile on your face! Your fitness should always have an element of fun to it...even when the going gets tough. Of course, some workouts will be harder than others, but we should learn to embrace and appreciate the struggle in those moments. Train your body and mind to welcome the adversity with open arms and look at each bump in the road as a fun, new challenge. 3. WORK HARD Hard work is the best way to guarantee the results you want. We recommend that between 3-5 times per week challenge yourself with the effort you are putting into your workouts. We want you working at a pace that’s challenging for you but also within your physical and psychological limits -- don’t overdo it! 4. REST WHEN YOU NEED We recommend that you rest when you feel you need it...whether physically or psychologically. Some days you just need to chill and that’s okay. Other days you might need some “active recovery” like a hike, brisk walk, yoga, or a swim. The bottom line is that you should listen to your body and take appropriate rest or active recovery when you need it.

7. WARM-UP AND RECOVER PROPERLY Before getting started with a workout you should get yourself warm. Move around for at least five minutes and get sweaty. At the end of the warm-up, your body should feel ready for the day’s work. After your workout wraps up, it’s important to take some time, again roughly five minutes or more, to cool down and recover. Recovery can take different forms -- a slow walk, breathing intentionally, or some flow yoga. The ultimate goal of recovery is to down-regulate and return to homeostasis. Get yourself back to a normal state where your heart rate and breathing are under control.

it 's your birthday

8. GET OUTSIDE Your fitness journey should include some time spent interacting with nature. Sunny days are great to move things outside but don’t forget to play in the rain or snow now and then! 9. ADD IN SOME PLAY It’s not just for little kids! Add in some play to keep your fitness routine fun and ever challenging. Play adds an element of levity to fitness...it takes the stress out of it. You should get out there to play and learn some new sports or skills. 10. DON’T GO OVERBOARD Take your fitness seriously and work hard; however, don’t become too wrapped up in it. Don’t let it rule your life. Fitness can and should be a major part of your life but create a boundary for yourself. There’s a difference between commitment and lifestyle versus obsession and compulsion. Be on the lifestyle side of the equation. Fitness is one expression of who you are...it doesn’t define every aspect of your life.

One example of savings for lower emissions vehicles as an outcome of the Budget is a €360 VRT reduction on the Toyota Corolla self-charging hybrid. This saving is in addition to the two percent VAT benefit that customers who purchase a new car before February 28, 2021, will receive. In the case of a Corolla hybrid, it adds up to €930 in tax savings overall. “I welcome the introduction of the new tax bands for passenger cars proposed in the budget," said Steve Tormey, CEO of Toyota Ireland. "They clearly indicate the future policy direction for Government,

whereby motorists will now be increasingly rewarded for purchasing lower emitting vehicles, such as hybrid and electric, while paying more if opting for higher emission vehicles, such as diesel.” Bowlers Garage is the local Toyota dealer. The cost of buying a 100% electric Nissan LEAF has fallen by up to €1,843 as a result of the recent Budget with Nissan also making it possible for Irish motorists to get behind the wheel of a new electric vehicle (EV) for just €27,595. “The Budget VRT changes and recent VAT changes have had a very positive impact on the cost of buying a new Nissan LEAF and this in turn has led to a significant upsurge in interest from EV buyers online and across our dealer network,” said James McCarthy, CEO of Nissan Ireland. Randles Bros on the Muckross Road is the local Nissan dealer.

New electric Ford Transit is on its way The 400-volt, 67 kWh battery-powered van is designed to deliver up to 350km of driving range on a single charge. A feature, sure to be a hit with the many tradesmen who already operate a Transit, is that the van can be used as a 2.3

kW / 230-volt socket to power tools on site. “Our clear mission to make our customers’ businesses thrive has helped to make Ford the leading commercial vehicle brand in Europe,” said Hans Schep, General Manager Commercial Vehicles, Ford of Europe. “Electrification brings new ways for customers to manage their businesses and fleets more efficiently. With E-Transit this is delivered with more than 55 years of Transit expertise, a network of expert dealers and converters, and an ecosystem of digital tools

that will help translate the potential of electrification into a business reality – all that, and the benefits of zero-emission transportation.” The E-Transit is the latest in a long-line of vans for Ford. The first Transit, launched 1965, is now in its fifth generation. The electric version will be the sixth model line since its launch. First developed by a British team, the first generation Ford Transit went into production at Langley, Berkshire, in 1965 and became the UK’s best-selling commercial vehicle in its first year. Since

then, four new generations of the Ford Transit have gone into production (the latest in 2014) and it is now manufactured in Turkey. Over eight million vans have been sold worldwide over the last 55 years making it the third biggest selling van of all time. The Transit, available locally in Killarney Autos, has been the best-selling light commercial vehicle in Europe for 40 years, and in some countries the term ‘Transit’ has passed into common usage as a generic trademark applying to any light commercial van.

The world’s favourite van is going electric. Expected on the market in 2022, the all new E-Transit is the latest addition to Ford’s growing family of electrified vehicles, and it’s ushering in a new era for the iconic Transit van.

Preparing to sell your home "First impressions last"……. an old adage that rings true as much in property marketing as it does in life. Remember you never get a second chance to make a first impression. So how can this be brought to bear when marketing your home for sale? Simple: prepare, prepare and prepare some more. If you have made the decision to sell your home, now is the time to prepare it for sale. At DNG, our strategy is simple; to make your property more appealing to the highest number of potential purchasers ultimately leading to a better selling price in a quicker timeframe. Over the coming weeks we will provide some simple but effective tips in how to best prepare your property for sale.

Start on the outside and work your way in. The kerb appeal to your property is vital in attracting that initial interest. In preparing for a first date we make sure we look our best hoping to make that good first impression! Why should it be any

different when selling your home? House buyers have been known to not even enter a property based on its kerb appeal or lack of, so make sure your home's exterior looks excellent. Cut the lawns, brush the driveway, trim your shrubs, weed those flowerbeds,

and touch up any peeling paintwork. A fresh coat of paint to your entrance door can work wonders. Why paint it something boring when you can make your house the most memorable one in the neighbourhood with a colour you love? Perhaps sunny with a cheery yellow, demure with a dove grey or bold with a true red! Simply adding some potted plants and flowers to add a bit of colour can make a big difference to your entrance appeal. These are all very simple but effective means of adding to your kerb appeal. Remember first impressions last. Follow us on our social media platforms for up to date tips in preparing your home for sale. If you are thinking of selling your home contact us for a free appraisal of your property.

Vaccine optimism brings record market highs Investors appeared to waver between optimism and caution over the week. The S&P 500 posted a record high close on Friday, driven by gains made early in the week, finishing the week up 2.2%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lagged, sliding 0.6% as traders piled into beaten-down value names at the expense of high-flying growth stocks. This week's big market rotation saw the industry groups that have underperformed so far this year claw back some of their losses. On average, these industries gained 6.1% over the week, while all other sectors remained broadly flat (0.5%). Between election results, earnings, and Pfizer's potentially game-changing vaccine, the market has been in a state of constant flux in recent weeks. Last Monday's positive vaccine news gave rise to the stock market's latest attempt to wean itself off tech and rotate back

into 'value stocks' such as cruise liners and airlines. Despite a strong start, this rotation was muted somewhat later in the week as the euphoria of finding an effective vaccine against COVID-19 buckled under the weight of the bleak shorter-term outlook. The number of new infections of COVID-19 in the US hit 150,000 for the first time, as cities and States moved at various speeds to contain the latest wave of Coronavirus. Despite the potential rollout of a vaccine in the future, for now, the global economy still remains at the whim of this pandemic.

EQUITIES

As well as a rotation into value stocks, US small-cap stocks also outperformed their large-cap counterpart. The Russell 2000 Index, a small-cap benchmark, climbed over 6%.

BOND YIELDS

Another choppy week for bond yields this week. Yields on the 10 Year US Treasury note closed just under 1% early in the week, the highest point in nearly eight months. Yields finished the week at 0.89% as the vaccine boost wore off and the shorter-term uncertainty set in.

COMMODITIES

US crude oil jumped 7.8% this week, moving back above $40 per barrel and is now up 16% over November. Despite this recent surge from its previous lows, the latest spike in Coronavirus cases looks set to weigh on demand over the shorter-term as further travel restrictions suppress fuel demand.

MARKET OUTLOOK

Early this week, some of the pandemic's long-suffering stocks had a welcome respite as vaccine news offered light at the end of the tunnel. The likes of Carnival Corp recorded double-digit returns over the week. Conversely, the 'stay-at-

home' stocks like Peloton and Netflix plummeted into the red as market participants seemed to assume the pandemic was over, and everything could return to normal. The reality is, while some uncertainty has been stripped out, plenty remains. Please, do take solace in this wonderful vaccine news, but let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet by jumping into the 'cheap stocks'. Plenty value-traps still remain for now. Those companies that have suffered most due to the pandemic will continue to be squeezed over the coming months.

Top tips when buying home insurance CONTENTS: Remember that contents are things that would go with you if you moved house. For example, a dining table is part of contents but a fitted kitchen is part of buildings. You should value your contents for replacement value.

Your home is your most valuable asset so it is vitally important to protect it by insuring it correctly. As expert insurance brokers we have been saving our customers money on their home insurance for nearly 40 years. We have expertise in dealing with all types of property damage and we have worked through large weather events such as the winter of 2009 which resulted in nationwide claims of half a billion Euros. Over the past decade home insurance rates have reduced and stabilised.

ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE COVER: This usually covers damage such as spills on carpets or knocking over a television. It can also include glass damage. You may find that you can delete this cover and save money on your renewal. As each insurer in the market would have different definitions and terms, it pays to ask an expert insurance broker such as Healy Insurances.

COST SAVING TIPS

Here are some cost saving tips when buying home insurance. BUILDINGS: Your property should be insured for its rebuild cost not the market value. Rebuilding costs have increased substantially over the past few years. There is a handy rebuilding calculator on www.scsi.ie where you can

John Healy of Healy Insureances.

calculate your own property. UNDER-INSURANCE: This can have serious consequences in the event of a claim so it is advisable to review annually and get professional advice from an insurance expert.

REVIEW: Home insurance rates use many data streams so it is crucial to ensure that your details are correct when quoting such as your Eircode, use of the property (owner occupied, let out etc), intruder and smoke alarms, year of construction and flat roof details if applicable. At renewal time you should review

with your insurance advisor. SHOPPING AROUND: When shopping around it is important to understand that direct insurers and banks will only sell their own products and may not be able to offer you choice or advise you on your options. It is also worth noting that you are free to move your home insurance from your mortgage provider, we do this on a regular basis and succeed in securing large savings for these customers. USE A BROKER: As experts in home insurance we understand the market conditions and can advise which insurer or which product is most suitable for your specific needs. Aside from understanding the discounts that can be achieved in each case we also negotiate bulk discounts from insurers to get the best prices for our customers. At Healy Insurances we can search the market for you, review your policy - and save you money!

Pensions advice for the self-employed Recent CSO statistics show that less than 50% of self-employed people have private pension plans in place and many of the plans that are in place are underfunded. This means that many of them will not have enough income to enjoy their retirement. This may be why self-employed people often work into their 70s, long after their own employees may have retired! Too often the business owner puts everything into the business and the thought of retirement planning is continually put on the long finger.

WHERE TO START

Which type of pension scheme is most suited will depend on whether the business is run on a sole trader basis or through a limited company.

SOLE TRADER

For a sole trader the individual can contribute to a Personal Retirement

Savings Account (PRSA), a Personal Pension Plan or a Self-Directed Pension Plan. One should speak to a Financial Advisor to establish which best suits their specific circumstances. The maximum that can be contributed will depend on age and net relevant earnings.

LIMITED COMPANY

Where the business trades through a limited company, the most suitable plan for the owner will usually be an Executive Pension Plan. In many small companies the owners draw just enough to live comfortably on and any excess profits build up as cash balances in the company. If the owner wishes to extract such balances for their own benefit such withdrawals are treated as income and are subject to tax, PRSI

and USC. One exception is if the company makes a contribution to a pension plan on behalf of the business owner. Such contributions can be offset against the company’s tax liability and there is no cost to the individual. This is the most tax efficient tool available to business owners, especially where the company is trading profitably. The limits on what can be paid into an Executive Pension Plan are even more generous than the sole trader limits and gives huge scope for the company owner to build up a meaningful pension pot. In doing this, funds that were lying idle in the company have now been placed in a fund for the business owner’s benefit, and any growth achieved will accrue tax free.

TAX FILING DEADLINE DECEMBER 10

Between now and December 10, any sole trader who has not yet filed their

tax returns will need to discharge their tax liability for 2019. Instead of paying the full amount due to Revenue you can, and should, direct at least some if not all of that money into a pension plan. For example, Tom who is a sole trader, aged 38, made a net profit of €56,000 in 2019. His tax bill is €12,000. He is on the marginal 40% tax rate. His Financial Advisor recommended that he makes a pension contribution of €10,000. His pension fund will therefore have €10,000 added to it, growing tax free, and his tax bill of €12,000 will be reduced by €4,000. Act now as the deadline is fast approaching. If you have any questions on pensions, investments or life cover, email them to killarney@mcguireliston.ie or sales@killarneyadvertiser. ie or call McGuire Liston on the numbers above.

SUPPORT: Kerry Football hero David Clifford holding a picture by Kilcummin NS Junior Infant Fionn O'Donoghue. "We were most disappointed for all the players and management team following Kerry's recent disappointment, but we wanted to spread some cheer and show our support," Kilcummin NS principal Gillian Sheehan said.

If you have a golden aura, folks think that you’re the best, And so winners get gold medals, in Olympic tests. Greece once had a golden age, as had Egypt, Spain and France, And ours was Italia ‘90, with that World Cup romance. However, all that glitters is not gold, is an old adage, Written by the Bard, who no doubt had been damaged, When he fell for a scam, that appealed to greed, So he coined his epigram, and hoped that folks would heed. Fool’s gold is pyrites, with a brassy, bright resemblance, That dazzled old prospectors, leaving them demented. Dreamers driven by the craze, in Peru and Mexico, Searched for a mythic land of gold, they called El Dorado. Donald Trump wore fake hair, like a golden crown, Declaring to the watching world, that he was the best around, But of late his golden tresses, have turned Olympic silver, Because he came in second, and no longer is a winner. He disputes the basic concept, that two and two is four, For Mayo’s Joe is wide awake, with a foot inside the door. They’ll have to drag Trump screaming, from the big White House, Not like a golden lion, but more like a silver mouse!

IN MEMORIAM 1ST ANNIVERSARY & ACKNOWLEDGEMNT

1ST ANNIVERSARY ADAMS

In loving memory of Norrie Buxton, nee O’Sullivan, Inch House, New Street, Killarney and London, who passed away on 22nd November, 2019.

In loving memory of Delia Adams late of Bridge House, Coolgarrive, Killarney, Co. Kerry who passed away on the 26th of November 2019.

As we remember, Norrie, on her First Anniversary, her husband, Tim Buxton, mother Phyllis O’Sullivan, brothers Billy and Simon and sisters, Miriam and Sally, would like to express our most sincere thanks to all the following: Firstly, thank you to Donal Whitty O’Sullivan who posted notice of Norrie’s death on Facebook. As she had passed away in London her funeral in Killarney would not be taking place for some time so it was good to have the word out there. To all the neighbours and friends who called to the house to pay their respects and to all who sent cards and letters. It brought us great comfort during such a very sad time.

Think young and you’ll never grow old, The years will pass you by, Birthdays are for merry making , Present giving and birthday caking , Age is the state of your mind, As the days of your years unfold, Don’t live in the past, Right up to the last , Think young and you’ll never grow old. xxx

To all our cousins, friends and the many who travelled from afar to attend Norrie’s Requiem Mass on that windy, stormy, day so close to Christmas. Please rest assured that your efforts were deeply appreciated. To the Park Rangers who stood out in the terrible rain in Muckross Abbey for such a long time in order to facilitate all who came to the Graveyard to say their final goodbyes to Norrie. Thank you to the Great Southern for doing a lovely lunch and especially for the, most welcome, hot drinks served to the cold, soaked, funeral attendees as they entered the hotel. It was a great touch which went down very well. It would be impossible to thank everyone individually. Therefore, we would ask that you please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our sincere gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. Sadly missed by Tim, Phyllis, Billy, Miriam, Simon and Sally, sisters-in-law Hilary and Sandy. And all your nieces and nephews who adored their most kind and generous Auntie Norrie.

To the Gravediggers especially Seamus O’Connor for preparing Pat’s final resting place in an excellent manner. To all those who helped in anyway, your contribution made our sad loss more bearable. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgment as an expression and a token of our deepest gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions.

Along the road to yesterday, That leads me straight to you, Are memories Of happy days, Together we once knew.

You can have only one father, Patient, kind and true, No other friend in the world, Will be the same to you. When other friends forsake you, To Father you will return, For all his loving kindness, He asks nothing in return. As we look upon his picture Sweet memories I recall, Of a face so full of sunshine, And a smile for one and all. Sweet Jesus take this message, To my dear father up above, Tell him how I miss him, And give him all my love. I am home in heaven dear ones, Oh so happy and so bright, There is a perfect, Joy and beauty In this everlasting light, All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed, I am now at peace forever, Safely home in heaven at last, Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade? Oh! But Jesus Love illuminated Ever dark and fearful glade, And he came himself to meet me In that way so hard to thread; And with Jesus’s arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still; Try to look beyond earth’s shadows, Pray to trust our father’s will. There is still work waiting for you, So you must not idly stand; Do it now, while life remaineth You shall rest in Jesus’ land. When the work is all completed, He will gently call you Home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see you come! Sacred Heart of Jesus,. I place all our hope in you. “I am the Resurrection and the Life” Say the Lord. “If anyone believes in me, Even though he dies, he will live. Anyone who lives and believes in me will not die.” Alleuia. What is death, A wondrous mercy, A coming home, A divine welcome to a well loved child. Take great care about what you do and What you teach, always do this And in this way you will Save both yourself and Those who listen to you. There is a home that lies beyond, And past it golden door Awaits the one who’s now away, Not lost - just gone before. And in that home that lies beyond, The Master will prepare A place for you, And then He calls, You’ll meet your Loved ones there. Lots of Love, sadly missed and always remembered by your loving son Martin

This week Killarney Valley coach and committee member Tomás Griffin tells Adam Moynihan how the club’s big dream became a reality. Adam Moynihan: Tomás, congratulations. The arena looks spectacular. Tomás Griffin: Thanks, Adam. We’re really, really proud of it. We hope that it’ll allow us to grow the athletics club, and also benefit the broader community in whatever way we can. AM: I know it has been a long process for the club. Can you tell me where the whole concept came from? TG: The idea really started with my

brother, Jerry, about 10 years ago. He deserves an awful lot of credit for keeping people energised and involved when we thought that it couldn’t be done. I must also mention Cathal O’Brien who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes since Day 1. There were lots of hurdles. Killarney Valley Athletics Club (formerly Spa/Muckross AC) rebranded around seven years ago. Prior to that, Jerry and Bríd Stack and Jean Courtney and Con Lynch would have been doing a lot

of the coaching, based in various GAA pitches that they could get some time on. The club was just bouncing along really. Some great athletes were produced but some would have moved to other clubs because facilities are important. That’s where the idea came from. Let’s build a facility of our own, and then we’ll have a better chance of developing the sport beyond juvenile level. AM: So, what came next? TG: The next step to take it from a dream to a possibility was land. Where could we possibly find a place to put a facility? And the type of facility you can

build is dictated by the land that you can acquire. The gold standard ambition is to have a full 400-metre Olympic standard athletics track but the reality is that you’d need an enormous amount of space. Based on property prices in Killarney, the club could never acquire that kind of land. The idea of having it as a smaller facility and squeezing it in some place started to evolve. The committee had conversations with a couple of other sporting organisations and we wanted to partner with them, but really other clubs were reluctant to allow that happen, which was fine. We had to move on from the

SPORT

20.11.2020 idea of putting a track around what other clubs had. AM: How did the final location (alongside St Brendan’s College on the New Road) arrive on the table? TG: A fortunate conversation with St Brendan’s and Principal Seán Coffey came about because a few of us, including Jerry, are past pupils of the Sem and we knew that there was a piece of ground inside there that was gone to waste. There were dilapidated outdoor basketball courts and a green area that was not being used for anything. Seán suggested that we could maybe form a partnership with St Brendan’s Trust, which is essentially the church, who own a lot of the land. Killarney Valley AC had been renting St Brendan’s Hall for indoor training in the wintertime and we thought that maybe we could do something different here. AM: Fill me on the financial side of things. How much did the project cost? TG: The total project from start to finish is after costing €520,000. There were lots of challenges along the way. Firstly, it took longer than we were anticipating because of weather. When you’re laying a track you need temperatures to be a certain level. You also need very little rain, which is always going to be a challenge. There were other delays as well with trying to get contractors lined up, so all of that would have escalated the price. The original plan and the original projection was that it could be done for around €350,000. That changed because of the delays. Our ambition was always just to have the athletics track but the astro turf came in and changed the projected price to €520,000. AM: How did the fundraising go? TG: We managed to raise €400,000 in total. Through our own fundraising, which was done through GoFundMe pages and local businesses who pitched in behind the scenes – and we’re going to name and thank those businesses in an organised way over the next couple of months – we generated around €200,000. A lot of effort went into that. The balance came from Sports Capital funding, County Council funding and Leader funding. We also got a donation from the Tomar Trust, which supports community-based projects that are being done for the right reasons. So, we’re still left with a gap of €120,000. We’ve just relaunched our GoFundMe page with new video footage of the place now that it’s finished (gofundme.com/killarney-valley-ac-arena). AM: The arena itself is a sight behold. How long is the track? TG: It’s a 200-metre track with four lanes. It has a 100-metre sprinting straight. On the straight, there’s a finish line for 60-metre sprints and 80-metre sprints.

The fact that it’s a 200-metre track instead of a 400-metre track could be seen as a challenge but we’ve made sure that the bends aren’t too tight. The track itself is a permeable surface so water just drains straight through. It’s cushioned, so it’s a really lovely surface to run on. Another interesting point is that, as we know, the wind has an enormous influence on sprints. 99% of our winds are southwesterly, and our sprinting straight will benefit from southwesterly winds. That took thinking and planning. We have an Olympic standard high jump set-up that is possibly, based on what I’ve seen around the country, the best in Ireland. Our long jump runup is 50 metres long, which is Olympic standard, and the pit is 9 metres – the world record is 8.95 metres, so we’ve left five centimetres for someone to break it! We’ve managed to cover off every discipline that you could possibly need to do, and we squeezed it into half the space that would normally be available. AM: And the pitch is available to rent? TG: Yes. Because we’ve got the debt, we need to address it and astro turf rentals are a way to do that. Insurance is very important so anyone who wishes to rent it has to provide their own insurance, which effectively means clubs. If a random group wish to rent the pitch they can, but they need to buy standalone insurance and we can help them get that. There has been huge interest so far – we have very limited hours left. We’ve had good support from local clubs who needed an extra place. It’s 55 metres long and 32 metres wide, so it’s plenty big enough for seven-a-side or even 10-a-side for juvenile teams. The surface is top class. But it brings another challenge. There are running costs, there are maintenance costs, there are insurance costs… That requires co-operation and understanding from the broader community as well. The track will wear out. The pitch will wear out. We need to be free of our debt so that we can invest all the money from the rentals into a sinking fund, so that in 10 years’ time when the track wears out – and we hope it does wear out because that means it’s being used – we’ve got the money to resurface it. The same goes for the pitch. It’s not a business. We’re just a committee of people who want the facility to live forever. AM: How beneficial will the track be for Killarney Valley AC moving forward? It must be an exciting time for the club. TG: It is. We managed to open the place and turn on the lights during the pandemic, and facilitate the groups that are allowed to train. That, in itself, has been exciting. In the past, we were very limited in what we could do. As a result of that,

57

your skill levels as a coach get limited also. For us as coaches, the new facilities will allow us to up our skill levels, which will be very important. This in turn will feed into the ambition of the club. Our end goal, which is on the horizon already based on all the youth athletes that have been turning up to training, is that within a 24-month period, and hopefully by next summer, we’ll have a men’s team in the National League of athletics. Keeping girls involved is a challenge and our way of addressing that is to also set the goal of having a female team in the National League of athletics, probably within 36 months. AM: And the arena isn’t just for Killarney Valley AC… TG: It isn’t, and this is a very important thing for the public to know, especially people who may not have any involvement with athletics or may never have any intention to get involved. All of the schoolchildren in Killarney, through their schools in a managed way, have free access to our facility from 8.30am to 4.30pm during the school term. There are approximately 3,000 schoolchildren in the Killarney area, the majority of whom are within 500 metres of the facility. That’s a huge amount of people that we can expose to a sport that they might not have otherwise decided to get involved in. We may find our next Olympians, but that’s not what it’s about. It’s about helping people to get active. AM: Just to clarify for people who may not be familiar with the set-up: although it’s located adjacent to St Brendan’s College, this is Killarney Valley AC’s facility, and St Brendan’s have access to it in the same way that every other school in the vicinity has access to it. Is that accurate? TG: That is exactly the situation. We would like to see a relationship evolve between the schools over time so that everyone will have a fair shot at using it, and it won’t be St Brendan’s using it 100% of the time. One thing we can’t facilitate, though, is just leaving the gate open – that would never work. Everything that happens there will be on a managed basis, but there will be plenty of community-based stuff going on in there. People can also join the club and not be a competitive athlete, and we’ll be able to put on training for these people too. We’ll be deciding on a membership fee shortly and an announcement will be made. We will also be doing things like Couch to 5Ks for people in the local community who just want to get active. Keep an eye on our social media for updates on that. AM: Great stuff, Tomás. Congratulations again, and all the best with the new facility. TG: Thank you, Adam.

Time to honour the

Eamonn Fitzgerald speaks to Kerry All-Ireland winner Noel Lucey about his brother, Jimmy, who survived the infamous siege Heroes should be remembered and it is never too late to do so. I have often been critical of the need for the Irish Senate, seeing it as a talking shop and an unnecessary huge expense on the Irish taxpayer. However, I was very heartened to read the Seanad report last week and the resolution to honour 155 Irish soldiers, whose incredible bravery as peacekeeping heroes in Jadotville in 1961 has been for the most part ignored by successive governments for the past 59 years. More about that later but first of all let us focus on two Kerrymen who were central to the mission, Pat Quinlan and Jimmy Lucey, who are sadly both now dead. Any of our readers who have seen the film ‘The Siege of Jadotville’

will appreciate the incredible story from 1961. Commandant Pat Quinlan was the leader of the A Company of the Irish Army's 35th Infantry Battalion. Jimmy Lucey played at midfield for Kerry in the 1962 All-Ireland final alongside Mick O’Connell. His brother Noel played at centre back that day and earlier this week I spoke to Noel, living in Glenflesk, about that 1962 final win and about his late brother Jimmy.

MAGICAL

My own memories of the 1962 All-Ireland are of listening to Micheál Ó Hehir creating those magical pictures for those of us at home listening to him on the wireless. We didn’t have a TV, even though that was the first All-Ireland televised live. I had it tuned in to Radio Éireann long before the throw-in and

it was a good job, because there was an explosive start to the match. Kerry won the throw-in and unlike the modern ploy of working the ball in usually involving several inter-passing movements, the ball was dispatched route one to the forwards as Dr Eamonn coached at that time. No dilly dallying with it but send it in long to the forwards whose function is to score. Gary McMahon was corner forward and he punched the ball past Aidan Brady in the Roscommon goal. Kerry were a goal ahead and all it took was 34 seconds, the fastest goal ever scored in an All-Ireland final and that still stands 59 years later. Gary has long since passed away but his younger brother Eoin, a solicitor in Newcastlewest, often told me that ever since then when he goes to an All-Ireland final he stands up for 34 seconds and only then can he

relax and sit down on his seat knowing that his brother’s record stands for another year at least. Johnny Culloty was the Kerry goalkeeper in 1962, when the Kingdom won the All-Ireland title for the 20th time. My other memory of that game was of Jimmy Lucey catching a fine ball very early on in the game, then turning around and kicking it in towards his own goal providing an unexpected present for the unbelieving Roscommon forwards. Many friends said it happened much later in the game but Noel Lucey said my memory was correct. Goalkeepers were in no hurry to kick out the ball after a shock goal. Aidan Brady went long with the kickout, as was the only game tactic of the day. No short kick out to the corner back. Jimmy Lucey fetched the

heroes of Jadotville O’Neills ball turned and kicked it in towards his own backs. I said to Noel that maybe Jimmy wanted to pass it to his brother. Maybe so, but he didn’t exert an accurate kick-pass. The ball landed some yards to Noel’s side, but any danger was quickly averted by that brilliant left halfback beside him, Mick O’Dwyer, who nipped into the ‘bearna baol’ and sent the leather up to either Dan McAuliffe or Jerry O’Riordan.

ATTACKED

LEADER: Commandant Pat Quinlan was one of the heroes of Jadotville along with fellow Kerryman Jimmy Lucey, who was an All-Ireland winner with his county in 1962.

MOVIE: Jamie Dornan played Quinlan in the 2016 film 'The Siege of Jadotville', which is currently available on Netflix.

Just one year earlier, Jimmy Lucey and 154 of his lightly armed fellow Irish soldiers were attacked from 7.48am on the morning of September 13, and all hell broke loose. They were holed up for five days fighting for their lives, in what is remembered as the Siege of Jadotville. They were sent to protect settlers and locals as part of a UN peacekeeping mission in the hostile and volatile situation in the Congo. They were led by another Kerryman, Commandant Pat Quinlan from Caherdaniel parish. I got to know Pat in Dublin in the late 60s/early 70s and met him on a number of occasions where Kerrymen met. There was no ‘eirí in áirde’ in Pat Quinlan’s demeanour about his incredible leadership in Jadotville on September 13-17, 1961 and he didn’t say too much about their ordeal, although he was hurt by the reception they got when they came home. They were publicly condemned. He was referred to as a coward for calling for a ceasefire and surrendering. He had no other choice with rations and waters supplies exhausted. The Irishmen’s bravery, masterful tactics and gallantry were all forgotten. In 2008 Maurice O'Keeffe recorded an audio documentary on Jadotville for South County Dublin Council. He found that the survivors had raw feelings about how they'd been portrayed. "Crowds would abuse them at football matches. Some turned to drink or suffered terribly in other ways. They weren't recognised for their courage; they were seen as traitors for surrendering.” O’Keeffe said. Sadly so many of the heroes of Jadotville suffered in later life with post-traumatic stress. Some died by suicide, alcoholism and other ailments. It reminded me of what happened to the heroes of 1916, who were very unpopular in the eyes of the Dubliners for drawing all this trouble and fighting to the capital. That changed after the executions of the leaders and they became heroes.

Hordes of indigenous Katangese, as well as French and Belgian mercenaries, attacked the Irish, and the terrible ordeal began. The peacekeeping force, aided by Quinlan's competence and tactical strategy, kept an estimated 3,000 attackers at bay. They lived through a five-day downpour of shells and bullets but with supplies exhausted and help unable to reach them, he called surrender. Then followed six weeks of captivity as prisoners of war, not knowing if and when they would be executed. What is remarkable is that none of the 35th Irish Infantry Battalion were killed, whereas up to 300 of the attackers were reported as killed. Five of the Irish were injured. Leader Quinlan kept their spirits up, kept them together, and kept them alive. Jimmy Lucey survived and I asked his brother Noel earlier this week what he remembered about his brother’s ordeal and near death on UN peacekeeping duty. “Not an awful lot really, but I do remember my mother and father listening in closely to the reports on the radio at that time at home in Caragh Lake. There was no television there at that time, not even electricity. The reports were coming in about the Irish soldiers being ambushed, then captured and imprisoned. They didn’t know whether Jimmy was dead or alive. It went on for a long time, day after day and I remember they survived and they were home before Christmas.” And did Jimmy talk to you about Jadotville? “He didn’t say much about it at all. But one day he did tell me that one of the other lads was shot in the arm and Jimmy pulled him in to safety and saved his life, otherwise he would have been riddled with bullets. I also remember that when they came home they didn’t get a great reception because some people didn’t like it that they surrendered after five days in the siege.”

KERRY TEAM

“We played together with Kerry,” Noel continued. “He was in the army base in Naas and I was in the Air Corps. We played in the Whit Sunday Tournament in the Park (the Fitzgerald Stadium) in May or June of 1962 against Roscommon and that was Jimmy’s first day playing for Kerry. We met them afterwards in the All-Ireland final. He played very well and was picked at midfield with Mick O’Connell. He played his first championship game with Kerry against Waterford in Listowel.”

Kerry then trounced Cork in the Munster final in Cork on July 15 and easily beat Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park. Jimmy and O’Connell held sway in all those games, and then on to the final where they beat Roscommon 1-12 to 1-6. Jimmy went back on two further UN Peace missions including Cyprus. Mo bhrón, he had a short life, surviving the attack in Jadotville and the other UN missions, winning that coveted medal with Kerry, but his life was short, too short. He died of cancer while still a very young man. His brother Vincent played at right half forward on the Kerry team beaten by Galway 0-12 to 0-9 in the 1965 All-Ireland final. Paul Lucey, the fourth brother, certainly played with the Kerry juniors and if memory serves me well the four brothers won a Kerry SFC with Mid-Kerry. I understand that there are some of those 155 Jadotville heroes still alive. Some efforts were made over the years to honour the heroes of 1961. The A Company received a unit citation in Athlone some years ago. There were also talks of individual medals for distinguished service and gallantry. Attempts were made by successive governments but it never happened and that that gap is still there. Noel Lucey and his late wife Mary (nee Shine) had five daughters, Karen, Linda, Saundra, Áine and Deirdre, all great runners who have won numerous titles at local and national levels. I often saw them in full flight. With the Lucey DNA and coached by their father, they were winners in several arenas. Sadly, Linda passed away recently. She was married to Pat Eviston of Eviston House Hotel. Back to the Seanad. Thanks to the efforts of Mark Daly, the Seanad cathaoirleach, Simon Coveney, Minister for Defence, Frances Black (the singer who said that that some of those soldiers in Jadotville were as young as 15 year old) and other senators a new move is in train to award Distinguished Service Medals (DSM) and Military Medals for Gallantry (MMG) to the Jadotville heroes. 2021 will be the 60th anniversary of the siege at Jadotville. I hope there is no obfuscation in the Seanad report and urge Minister Coveney and those who have the power to officially honour the heroes of Jadotville, to do so promptly, even if most of the awards are granted posthumously. Their relatives will appreciate the much longed for recognition.

FPL is back with a bang Scout tips Richarlison to do the business The Premier League is back with a bang this weekend after the international break and FPL managers have some big decisions to make ahead of Gameweek 9. With popular Liverpool selections Trent Alexander-Arnold (calf - 50% chance of playing) and Mohamed Salah (COVID 25% chance of playing) doubtful and Southampton striker Danny Ings (knee, expected back December 19) out, transfers will be necessary for many. The most popular signings this week include Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea - £8.2m), Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United - £10.6m), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa £7.5m), Ben Chilwell (Chelsea - £6m) and Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa - £6.1m). Ziyech and Chilwell will be hoping line out the Saturday morning kick-off against Newcastle, while Grealish and Watkins could potentially do damage for Villa, who are at home to Brighton at 3pm. Bruno Fernandes will lead United out against West Brom later that evening at 8pm. The FPL Scout has also singled out Everton’s Brazilian forward Richarlison

OPTION: Everton forward Richarlison could prove to be a popular option for Gameweek 9. The Toffees face Fulham on Sunday.

(£7.8m) as a viable option for the ninth round of fixtures. “Richarlison’s ownership has dropped significantly in FPL after his recent three-match suspension,” The Scout said. “Richarlison can be found in just

3.8% of squads, having missed Everton's matches against Southampton, Newcastle United and Manchester United. “But he is now available for selection as the Toffees prepare for a favourable short-term schedule, with their next three matches scoring just two in the Fixture Difficulty Ratings. That run includes back-to-back encounters with promoted Fulham and Leeds United, who have struggled defensively this season. They are among the four sides to have conceded the most goals, with 15 and 17 respectively. “Richarlison started the season strongly, scoring once and providing three assists in Everton's first three matches. The underlying numbers highlight his goal threat for Carlo Ancelotti's side prior to his suspension. His totals of 16 shots overall and 12 shots inside the penalty area were both among the top seven forwards in FPL in the first five Gameweeks. “He also appears to be Everton's firstchoice penalty-taker this season, as evidenced by his converted spot-kick at Crystal Palace in Gameweek 3.” In the Killarney Advertiser/Brian James

onship and was due to graduate to the main Superbike championship this year until COVID-19 got in the way. He has already set his sights on the 2021 championship and has offered his 2015 specification race Yamaha up for sale. If the sale is successful he has his eye on an ex-Team Build Base British Super Bike Championship Suzuki which he hopes to run in the Irish Dunlop Masters Superbike series next season. He is one of about 20 Kerry racers already committed to the 2021 season. The Kerry season traditionally gets underway with a pre-season test at the Cartegena Circuit in Spain every March. This annual trip is organised by Emmet and John O’Grady of JOG Tuning, which is based in Ballymac. “The plan would always be to go Spain and see after that,” he said. “I was offered an ex-BSB bike, so I put my own one up for sale to see if there is any interest. I have got a good few calls already.”

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

No Sam in 2020 but our pundits lead the way The Ó Se’s are a law unto themselves – anyone who knows them will tell you that – so really it should come as no surprise that Tomás Ó Sé is blazing a trail for himself as an outspoken pundit for RTÉ. Speaking on The Sunday Game in the wake of Kerry’s shock defeat to Cork, Ó Sé raised some eyebrows with his frank assessment of The Kingdom’s showing on the day. The management team got it “totally and utterly wrong,” he said, before going on to describe the performance as “shambolic” and “as poor a display I’ve seen from Kerry since [Meath] 2001”. It’s rare that you get an ex-player calling out his own county in such a forthright manner; fellas have been tried and convicted of treason for less. It’s that direct, sincere style of speaking that makes Ó Sé special, though, and he’s not the only Kerryman excelling in front of the cam-

eras. After making a quick transition from the pitch to the studio, Tomás’ RTÉ colleague Colm Cooper has taken to punditry like a duck to water. Gooch is perhaps more measured than his former teammate, a bit more precise and, at times, diplomatic, but he’s also very engaging. He has the composure to deal with any curveballs his host, Joanne Cantwell, throws his way – and she sure does throw some curveballs from time to time. Over on Sky, and also on Off the Ball, Kieran Donaghy continues to impress. Listening to Donaghy is like having a chat with a knowledgeable friend below in the Speak (I say the Speak because it famously got a mention in Donaghy’s autobiography, as did the “gas barmen with gas nicknames”, Box and Hard Man). When it comes to sports, Donaghy is about as engrossing as they come because his enthusiasm just bursts through with each clearly enunciated syllable.

Another former player, and a former manager, Eamonn Fitzmaurice is a regular guest across a number of stations and I must say that I invariably find myself agreeing with his analysis. (I’m fully aware that Eamonn might take that as an insult.) He is often able to highlight and elucidate things that the casual viewer might have missed. I suppose that’s the coach in him. In fact, when you think about it, each of the aforementioned quartet have onscreen personas that perfectly align with their personas on the pitch or on the sideline. What really sets all four apart, though, is how honest they are. With some pundits, you can almost hear the gears turning in their heads before they answer a question. Can I say this? Will it get me in trouble? A while back I asked Gooch if it was difficult to talk about Kerry in his role as a pundit. “I think GAA people by and large

If I had to rank the top pundits , I would honestly place all of the leading Kerry analysts right towards the top.

are very educated people and if you’re not telling the truth, they’ll see right through you,” was his response. “You’d be hopeful, particularly in Kerry with the standards the county has set for such a long time, that [the players] meet those high standards. And when they don’t, you have to call it out. I think if players and people around are fair about it, they understand that as well.” Of course, it would be remiss of me not to mention the great Pat Spillane, who walked so the likes of Tomás and Gooch could run. (Or should that be, “talked so they could analyse”?) We also have the likes of Aodán MacGearailt working for TG4, a network that frankly doesn’t get enough credit for the impeccable standards of its GAA coverage. If I had to rank the top television pundits around, I would honestly place all of the leading Kerry analysts right towards the top of the pile. But maybe I’m biased? Or, as Aodán and Tomás might put it, “aithníonn ciaróg ciaróg eile”. Maybe my Kerry upbringing has cultivated in me the same sensibilities that their Kerry upbringing has cultivated in them. Things haven’t panned out as we would have hoped this year but at least there’s some comfort in knowing that a few well-placed Kerrymen will have their say on All-Ireland final day.

Kenny needs more time The numbers are pretty horrific. Eight games. No wins. One goal. To put it mildly, the Stephen Kenny revolution hasn’t quite started yet, and some fans are already voicing concerns that it might not get off the ground at all. It has been dire, yes, but are we not used to it at this stage? Ireland have won just five competitive games in the last four years, against Moldova, Wales, Gibraltar, Georgia, and Gibraltar again. You could comfortably fit the entire population of one of those sovereign states into the stand and terraces of the Fitzgerald Stadium. Kenny’s squad, which was not exactly stacked when he got his hands on it, has been decimated by injuries and COVID-19, to the point that the recent friendly against England was a complete waste of time. Organising that friendly at all when the FAI knew that defeat would all but consign Ireland to Pot 3 for the next qualifiers is a separate and, frankly, infuriating matter. As badly as Kenny’s reign has started, he needs time. Rejuvenating the national team after years of brutal football will require patience and perseverance.

The upcoming edition is very interesting with plenty of old photographs and will make an ideal Christmas present. RATHMORE PARISH OFFICE: We thank all those who returned to Janice the tax rebate letters which were sent out recently and we would appreciate if the remaining forms could be returned at your earliest convenience. These letters are very important because without them the parish cannot claim some of the tax which parishioners have already paid. (Again, to emphasise: This system costs the parishioner nothing. The Tax rebate is particularly important in this year of COVID. What is certain is that parish accounts will show a deficit by the end of the year so, any tax rebate contributions we can get in, will help to reduce the size of that deficit. For further information, contact parish office on 064 7761669 or rathmore@diocescofkerry. ie,
