“We have nowhere to go” – say bingo players Bingo players in Killarney have been told that they need to find a new home after Conroy Hall on the Park Road was forced to close this week due to health and safety concerns. | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
Bomb disposal unit called to defuse live grenade A live World War II grenade had to be defused by the army bomb disposal team after Gardai discovered it in a house just outside Killarney town on Tuesday night. | By Michelle Crean Homeowners, who had just inherited the house, had to be evacuated for a number of hours and an army team from Collins Barracks rushed to make the device safe. The new owners, who were moving into the property which they inherited from an antiques dealer relative, had called the Gardai to find out if the old firearms he had collected were within the law. However, at 5pm when Gardai travelled to the house located approximately five miles outside Killarney town, they then discovered the US Military 36 grenade – more commonly known as a ‘Pineapple grenade’. “The owners contacted the Gardai as there was a significant amount of antique
items, and during an assessment of the property we discovered the grenade,” Sergeant Dermot O’Connell told the Killarney Advertiser. “The occupants hadn’t moved in and we secured the area. We contacted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit in Cork and advised them of our concerns. The dispersed immediately. They were on scene at 9pm. We were delighted with their quick assistance and support in such a timely manner.” He explained that the device was found to be live and the army EOD Unit carried out a controlled explosion nearby at 11.10pm. The occupants were then left back into the house and the firearms will now go to a firearms dealer, he added.
The popular venue, which is owned by trade union SIPTU, was also closed earlier this summer following concerns over fire and safety regulations. The venue reopened last Sunday night - but punters were told by bingo organisers that SIPTU has advised them that the venue would have close again - this time indefinitely. Conroy Hall is one of the most popular bingo halls in the county due to the larger than usual prize money on offer. Some Sunday night games at the venue offer jackpots of over €1000. Regulars estimate that close to 1000 players attend every Sunday and that they travel from as far away as Dingle and Blarney to play. The venue is also popular with tourists. Aghadoe woman Maureen McCormick has been going to Conroy Hall bingo for 25 years. “There is bingo in Killorglin every Sunday night but there would not be room for all of us and the prize money is much better in Killarney,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I started going
when I gave up the cigarettes, I was not allowed smoke in there. We have nowhere to go. Maybe the Great Southern Hotel, they don’t have weddings on a Sunday, or maybe look at somewhere out of town like Fossa Community Hall.” SIPTU was contacted by the Killarney Advertiser but did not respond to calls ahead of going to print last night (Thursday). However, it is understood that the trade union closed the building to allow it time to carry out repair work and make building safe again.

Major clampdown on drug driving in Killarney | By Sean Moriarty Two people were arrested on suspicion of drug driving following a coordinated series of checkpoints by Killarney Gardai last Friday night. Gardai tested over 70 drivers on the night for intoxicated driving with a particular focus on drug driving on the Killarney bypass. Two persons were arrested on suspicion of drug driving and were taken to
Killarney Garda Station where further tests were carried out. The results of these tests will determine if prosecutions will follow. Small quantities of controlled drugs were also seized during the operation. "There had been a noticeable increase in drug driving both locally and nationally in recent years,” Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Garda District told the Killarney Advertiser. “New legislation is now in place to tackle this and we will use these new powers to make our roads safer."

Gardai plan second annual gala ball It’s out of the blue uniforms and time to get into the glitzy gear for members of An Garda Siochana – as details of this year’s Garda Black Tie Gala Ball have been announced. | By Michelle Crean The Killarney Oaks Hotel on Friday, October 4 is the place to be for a champagne and canapé reception from 6.30pm, followed by a five course sit down meal. And the event is open to the public with proceeds of this year’s event going to the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre. The Kerry Division of An Garda Siochana, under the direction of Chief Superinten-
The Department of Education and Skills has confirmed that its Financial Support Services Unit is investigating financial matters at a Kilcummin school. | By Sean Moriarty The Financial Support Services Unit helps schools comply with the law in terms of transparency, accountability and financial responsibility. “At the Department’s request, the Financial Support Services Unit has undertaken an examination of the school’s accounts and a report on the matter is currently being considered by the Department,” a Department of Education and Skills spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “Managers appointed by the patron are in place to manage the school. dent Eileen Foster, are delighted to be hosting a Black Tie Gala Ball, explained Garda Gillian MacEoin, who is helping to organise the event. “Last year’s Garda Ball was such a success that we had profits left over which we donated to the Kerry Mountain Rescue and the Kerry/Cork Cancer Link Bus. “This year we have chosen to nominate the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre
as the beneficiary of our ball. All profits made from ticket sales for this year will go to this centre.” The wonderfully entertaining ‘The Bentley Boys Band’ will have everyone on their feet after the meal, dancing into the night, she added. The Kerry Garda Dress Dance used to be a yearly event spanning decades, and the Kerry Division resurrected it last year. “Last year’s ball was such a fabulous success so this year’s gala ball is expected to be no different. We have fabulous spot prizes, kindly donated by many businesses in Kerry, and we will have a professional photographer on hand that night to capture all the glitz and glamour. All guests will then be given a professional photograph of themselves at the ball as a keepsake.” Tickets are priced at €70 each and are available from any of the Kerry Garda Black Tie Gala Ball committee members in any Garda Station in Kerry.
Kilcummin school faces investigation Management/Managers will changeover on December 1, 2019.” The Department did not say why it was producing such a report, but the school falls under the patronage of the Bishop of Kerry. Currently there is no Board of Management at the school and its being run by a manager and a co-manager appointed by the Department. While there is nothing wrong with a school having an appointed manager it is unusual and the Diocese of Kerry says it strives to have management boards in all its schools. This is not the case at Kilcummin. “In relation to all the primary schools under the patronage of the diocese,
the aim is to have an active Board of Management in place. The practice of the appointment of a single manager to a school has been used occasionally in times of transition from one Board to the next,” Mary Fagan, Director of Communications of the Diocese of Kerry, told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is the case in relation to Scoil Naisiunta Cill Cuimin. A single manager was appointed by the Minister of Education and Skills to this school in 2016. A co-manager was appointed in 2019. It is envisaged that a new Board of Management will be appointed by December 1 along with all other schools.”
Director of the service, Vera O’Leary, who has been at the helm of the centre for the last 27 years, says they are absolutely delighted to be nominated this year. “We work very closely with the Gardai especially the new Protective Services Unit,” Vera told the Killarney Advertiser. “We’re delighted to be nominated. We have a really strong working relationship with the Gardai, it’s very important for us to have a mutual understanding of different roles. These funds will go directly to crisis counselling services. For every €100 raised that will enable us to deliver an additional 2.5 hours of counselling sessions.” She added that historically there’s been a low level of reporting abuse. “Having that relationship with the Gardai enables more of the clients to come forward and report and know that they’re going to be treated in a respectful manner.” She added that there’s been many changes to the service over the last 27 years, with younger people now more than ever needing help. “Society has changed drastically over this time. Young people are becoming highly sexualised now. We deal with age 14 upwards. People are finding it easier to talk and hopefully every year more victims will come forward.”

KDYS plan new stateof-the-art facility Building works for 47 bed spaces, state-of-the-art workshop rooms and meeting spaces began in Killarney on Tuesday – at KDYS eurOg Killarney – the only European Youth Centre in Ireland. | By Michelle Crean The move is part of a plan to cater for groups travelling for leaders from all over the county, country and internationally, and will include an onsite coffee shop which will also be open to the public at the centre located alongside the Friary in Killarney. ‘eurOg’ Youth Centre in the town is the flagship centre of the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service and was awarded the European Youth Centre Quality Label in 2017 by the Council of Europe, becoming the only Youth Centre in Ireland to receive this accolade, and one of only 13 Youth Centres in total out of the 47 member countries of the Council of Europe. This new wing will create exciting new opportunities for young people to come and stay in Killarney from all over the county, all over Ireland and internationally, CEO Tim O’Donoghue explained. “We are delighted to expand our service and to introduce this facility as it will connect many young people locally to
opportunities across Europe and for continental based young Europeans to come here,” he said. “It will also create possibilities for young people in youth clubs around the county to come and enjoy Killarney as part of their annual programme.” In late October, the Council of Europe expert team will visit Killarney to reassess the centre with a view to renewing the European Youth Centre Quality Label for a further five years. “The Council of Europe are very impressed with the work of the KDYS and recognise the powerful community support that ensures that our young people benefit from a high quality youth service in their area,” he said. “We are very proud that a Kerry organisation is leading out these high standards on a national and international stage. The development of ‘STAY@eurOg’ will take around two months and this will see us into a new and exciting programme in 2020.”
On Saturday, September 28 from 2pm to 5pm there’ll be a BBQ and a cake sale with a number of exciting events including fun for all ages on the day. huge success over the last number of years and continues to grow and develop each year. The club welcomes children of all abilities for training both indoor and outdoor. “The aim of our academy is to provide children with a fun and enjoyable experience in a safe and friendly environment. We strive to develop key skills with our team of dedicated parents and coaches. Boy racer convictions good news for motorsport Killarney Gardai, business leaders in the town and rally organisers have all welcomed a recent court decision to disqualify 12 drivers for two years after they were found guilty of dangerous driving while attending this year’s Rally of the Lakes. | By Sean Moriarty The popular event, which this year celebrated its 40th anniversary, has been blighted by anti-social behaviour by these so called boy racers in recent years. The spectacular two-day motorsport festival has been over-shadowed by the anti-social actions of non-genuine motorsport fans who arrive in Killarney at the same time the rally is in progress. They engage in dangerous driving and disruptive behaviour but make no contribution to the sport and make no effort to attend official events connected with the popular rally.
ANTI SOCIAL
Their actions have caused widespread problems for the sport and they are unfairly linked to real supporters. They are a nuisance to the people of Killarney and genuine rally fans are blamed for their actions. Tired of the bad publicity attached to the boy racers element indirectly connected with the event, event organiser Killarney and District Motor Club joined forces with Killarney Gardai in an effort to stamp out the issues that have blighted recent rallies. Ahead of this year’s May Bank Holiday weekend rally, both organisations put out the message that boy racers were not welcome at the rally and that anybody found misbehaving or bringing the sport into disrepute would be heavily dealt with by the authorities.
Gardai launched a major undercover operation at this year’s rally. As a result 12 men were arrested on various charges of dangerous driving.
CONVICTIONS
This week the 12 men, two of whom were from Kerry, faced judge David Waters at a special sitting of Killarney District Court. They were found guilty of dangerous driving and received a two-year driving ban. “I welcome these convictions and the strong sanctions imposed, in particular the two year driving disqualification handed out,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “These convictions reflect a determined effort by An Garda Siochana and all the other stakeholders who work with us, to make the Rally of the Lakes a better and safer event for all concerned. An Garda Siochana in Killarney will be relentless in hunting down reckless drivers who flout the law and we will be innovative in utilising every available legal means to gather evidence and bring these individuals before the courts. Not only are these drivers a menace to other road users, they are also destroying our roads in some of the most scenic parts of the county.” Killarney and District Motor Club also welcomed the convictions as its professionally organised event has been tarnished by the actions of a minority who do not support the event in any way. Aside from the rally, the club puts on a host of other
events during rally weekend, including a family friendly ceremonial start on Friday night and a gala prize giving ceremony at The Gleneagle Hotel on Sunday evening. Motor clubs from all over Ireland and the UK supply over 200 volunteer marshals to run the event and it attracts international media coverage. The boy racer element makes no contribution towards the event and does not visit the live special stages to watch the weekend’s action unfold, instead preferring to cause disruption to the town and its hinterland. “The motorsport community is aware of the great lengths that our club and event has gone to in order to deal with this issue,” said KDMC chairman Diarmuid Cronin. “The community of Killarney has been very supportive in our endeavours and these convictions reaffirms our commitment to the community.”
PROGRESSIVE THINKING
Progressive thinking by the Rally of the Lakes organisers some years ago brought about a successful collaboration with the Gardai resulting in the convictions this week. The Rally of the Lakes directly funded Garda efforts for the last 10 years by investing over €100,000 in that period to the policing operation. “Our investment in policing our event against the activities of these few sends a clear message that our event will not tolerate this behaviour,” Dermot Healy, Clerk of the Course, said. “We must not lose sight of the genuine motorsport fan, who will always receive a warm Killarney welcome.” The anti-social behaviour of boy racers has blighted this popular international motorsport event in recent years. Not isolated to the Killarney-based event,
other motorsport events have suffered from the same faith. The behaviour of these boy racers has marred the sport and unfairly implicated the genuine motorsport fan. This year’s rally attracted over 140 rally teams from all over Europe and was buoyed by the appearance of Hollywood A-lister and local hero, Michael Fassbender, who is well known for his love of motorsport. Fassbender competed in this year’s event and was seen by millions across the world promoting the event on the Graham Norton Show.
TOURISM BOOST The event provides a welcome early season boost for Killarney with the town close to 80 percent hotel room capacity during rally weekend. Gardai, at the time, estimated that there was over 60,000 people in Killarney on the weekend of the rally between those directly involved in the rally and traditional tourists. Television coverage of the rally, broadcast to several European countries, showcased the natural beauty of the region to millions of more potential future visitors. “Killarney is known for the welcome it offers visitors and as the events capital of Ireland,” said Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President Paul Sherry. “The actions of these individuals diminishes enjoyment for the real rally fans and causes an unprecedented nuisance to visitors and locals alike. We welcome these convictions and echo the Gardai and the motor club’s message that these people simply are not welcome in our town.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
“If the concentration on Dublin was not so sad it would be comical!”
It’s all about Dublin these days – but then Dublin is all there is. Like a heat seeking missile, it gobbles up the rest of the country at an extraordinary rate, and we speak now in terms of the Dublin region – taking in Meath, Cavan, Kildare, Wicklow and Laois. I think it is about time we talked about Dub-Ireland. Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson, at this month’s Council meeting called for Japanese style bullet trains for people working in Dublin - but who want to move out “of this chaotic and overcrowded city,” is what he said. Cllr Gleeson has long been voicing concern at how Dublin and the east coast are being developed, while counties like Kerry fall even further behind with very little funding or investment or planning. Brexit approaches and we badly need to upgrade our ports - but what happens? Irish Ferries move their entire Rosslare to France operation to Dublin Port which is choked already and difficult to get at. For people from Kerry that is a four hour plus journey and
three tolls. Dublin airport is eating up its own and competing and undercutting Cork Airport which it owns. Now Dublin needs a third runway. And why does the children’s hospital have to be in Dublin - smack in the center and difficult to get at? If the concentration on Dublin was not so sad, it would be comical. Unfortunately, it is where most of our young people end up. Coming down weekends costs up to €80 return by rail. There is no reduction for regular users as you might have on city transport. Now we probably won’t get Cllr Gleeson’s bullet train anytime soon, but surely, we could get reductions for our hard-working youth who are being forced out of Kerry to Dublin to get work and to live in over-priced houses.
One suggestion I have is that Ireland should be like many other countries – give a reduction to the pensioners by all means but make it a reduction and not something completely free, and ring fence the money for concessions to others. Alternatively, sell a yearly pass for €70, and give this money towards concessions for our hard-pressed young people. The reality is many of the pensioners availing regularly of train travel have far more in their pensions than the 20 somethings starting out in life have in their wages. It is high time the older generation agitated and made some gesture for the younger. The over 65s have worked hard, true, but they have also enjoyed benefits young people will never have. Benefits like no college fees for their children, good pensions if in a State job, and early retirement and affordable housing and rents. A small contribution towards the cost of their free travel wouldn’t go astray. Now what is the betting that our politicians from Kerry will take that one up?
Report illegal deer hunters It has come as a shock to realise that wildlife crime targeting our native deer herd is on the increase - and that poaching is not just a fellow going out lamping a deer - but illegal meat and antler sale is part of major international crime. The Irish Deer Commission (IDC), a deer conservation and management body, have some frightening anecdotes. They have launched a campaign ‘The Keep Deer Poaching in Sight’, urging the public to report armed illegal hunters who are running down wild deer and often bludgeoning them to death in the countryside. It has been developed with input from wildlife rangers with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS),
the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, along with the Gardai, Coillte, Game Councils, as well as the Irish Countryside Alliance, the British Deer Society and the Deer Alliance. “Criminals are increasingly exploiting deer for financial gain, creating animal welfare issues as well as a risk to human health," IDC spokesman, Damien Hannigan, said. Poaching and wildlife crime was a major criminal activity across Europe and wildlife crime now generated the highest illegal income for criminals after drug importation, firearms and human trafficking, he explained. There was no question but deer have to be managed, and culled, but this has to be done properly, he said. With the poaching gangs, deer were
being run down by dogs and shot or bludgeoned to death after powerful spotlight lamps and vehicles were used to confuse and blind them. Deer managers were increasingly coming across evidence that sophisticated night vision equipment was being used, he said. "The use of powerful lamps to confuse wild deer where they are then shot or set upon by dogs and bludgeoned to death, or increasingly the use of night vision equipment, coursing deer with dogs, and armed trespass are just some of the illegal activities we see," Mr Hannigan said. Deer were also being “snared” and most of the activity was at night. The illegal killing of wild deer is putting the whole management and con-
Boy racers Fairly severe penalties were handed down in the court this week to 12 boy racers caught doing wheelies and doughnuts. 10 of them had cornered a remote piece of the N71 after a stage of the rally and were watched by around 100 people. They all have been convicted of dangerous driving and put off the road for two years. Gardai had mounted a plain clothes operation to film the antics and the investigation was thorough. Most in motorsport will fully back the penalties and most will take a dim view of the antics and want to lock them up and throw away the key. But I am no rally enthusiast, and I have long held a certain sympathy for some of those caught. Field tracks have not worked in Donegal, I am told. However, could we not try something of the kind, but perhaps slightly different, in Killarney? According to some motorsport purists, these youngsters are anti-social and not especially overtaken with cars. I have to say, most of the boy racers I have seen in court do not come across as blaggards. servation of deer at risk, along with livestock and rural communities are at risk of harm or serious injury. So serious has the problem become, An Garda Siochana have now appointed liaison inspectors in all 28 Garda Divisions and these will specialise in the detection and prosecution of wildlife crime under the Wildlife Acts. The IDC is urging the public in rural Ireland to be on the lookout for deer poaching and to report suspicious activity to their local garda station and to wildlife conservation rangers. However, they warned against direct approaches to the gangs of poachers. Instead they should take down vehicle details and exact locations and contact the gardai or the wildlife personnel with the information. Meanwhile the annual Red Deer Rut Walk will be on Sunday, October 13. It is free and booking is essential. This can be done at www.irishdeercommission.ie.

Flying the flag at National Ploughing Championships Mike Brosnan was the only member of Killarney Ploughing Association to compete at this week’s National Ploughing Championships in Carlow. | By Sean Moriarty
APPEAL: Kieran Donaghy pictured with Chloe and her parents Deborah O'Connor and Gareth Jenkins.
When the big ‘Star’ met the little star
The biggest outdoor exhibition in Europe took place this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Fenagh, County Carlow and is a showcase of the Irish agricultural industry. Each day over 100,000 people attended the show. Brosnan, from Castleisland, took part in the two-furrow vintage plough class driving his 1965 Massey Ferguson tractor attached to a Ransome plough.
Competitors need to qualify locally to be in with a chance to compete on the national stage. Several members of the Killarney Ploughing Association were in Carlow to support Mike who was in action on Wednesday. “It is a huge honour for Mike and his family,” PRO Tom Leslie told the Killarney Advertiser. “And a huge honour that Mike flew the flag for the Killarney association.”
Donaghy donates Sky fee to Chloe fund | By Michelle Crean It was a big-hearted gesture – Kerry’s ‘Star’ Kieran Donaghy not only launched a fundraising appeal for a very sick little toddler – but also donated his Sky Sports TV appearance fee from the weekend’s All-Ireland Replay. Chloe Jenkins, whose mom Deborah hails from Killorglin, was featured in the Killarney Advertiser on Friday, August 30 to highlight an appeal to raise €150,000 through the GoFundMe page: ‘Chloe’s Journey’ as she battles a rare and aggressive cancer. Donaghy not only made a video to create awareness about it but also this week visited the tot and made the donation. He also wanted to launch a further video appeal by asking all sports fans, and indeed the public at large, to make the minimum GoFundMe donation of just €5 to help Chloe receive the care and treatment that she needs. "It was just so wonderful of Kieran to take the time to come and visit Chloe and to spend time with her,” Chloe’s mom Deborah O’Connor from Mount Lyne, Killorglin, said. “Chloe took to Kieran right away and within minutes she was showing him her toys. He threw himself down on the floor
beside her and just made such a fuss of her - she absolutely loved seeing him and it gave us such a lift to have him here. I just want to thank him for everything he has done." Kieran’s visit was particularly timely as Chloe’s parents had just received the news from Crumlin Children’s Hospital that surgery was to be scheduled for later this week. Chloe’s tumour is wrapped around many vital organs and major blood vessels. Her surgery comes with a whole host of complications. Kieran stated that he was just so moved by the battle that Chloe is facing that he wanted to help. “As a parent myself, I can't imagine what Gareth and Deborah are going through. Chloe is such a wonderful little child, it's obvious to me that while she may be small, she is a warrior - despite what she's going through she still has the biggest smile, she is an inspiration. I wanted to help launch the fundraising appeal and raise awareness. Once again, I'd just like to call on the public at large to help if they can at all, by making the minimum GoFundMe donation of just €5 to Chloe's Journey. The difference your donation will make will be huge." See Facebook and GoFundMe: Chloe’s Journey for more.
Gardai appeal for witnesses following Rathmore burglary Gardaí are appealing for witnesses in relation to a burglary at a petrol station at West End, Rathmore in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Between the hours of 1am and 6am, a number of suspects entered the petrol station through the back door and proceeded to take cash and stock from the premises. After spending a number of hours inside the petrol station, they left in a dark coloured car. "We are appealing for anyone who was in the Rathmore area between 12.30am
and 6.30am, to contact us, also, to any drivers who were in the area and who may have dash cam footage," Inspector Aidan Moynihan from Macroom Garda Station said. "The suspects in this burglary spent a long time in the area so hopefully someone might have spotted something suspicious, in particular, a dark coloured car.” Gardaí can be contacted at Macroom Garda Station on 026 20590, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Artists’ Showcase opens in Killarney The fifth annual Kerry Visual Artists’ Showcase opens at 6pm tonight (Friday) at Government Buildings, New Road, Killarney. A key date in the arts calendar in the county, the selected artists are all from or based in Kerry and are building careers for themselves as artists working in Ireland today. Cathaoirleach Niall Kelleher will open the exhibition and it will run from 9am – 5pm until October 31. “It’s a wonderful platform for our artists
and the standard this year is again very high,” Kate Kennelly, County Arts Officer, said. “Kerry County Council is delighted to be able to directly support the showcase. Audiences will see some of the best who are creating art in the county today. It’s a wonderful introduction for all ages to art and a great evening out as it is Culture
Night in Kerry the same day that we open the show.” There have been seven artists selected for the Showcase this year. Des Fitzgerald is a sculptor and photographer whose work covers a variety of issues such as communication, loss and friendship. Kaye Maahs works in oils and is a painter whose work is rooted in the personal and the local. James Hayes specialises in oil painting and illustration and his draws on personal connections between the individual and the wider world. Julie Lovett’s
influences derive from her rural upbringing, experiences and sense of place. Lisa Fingleton is an artist whose work is rooted in the autobiographical and deals with socio political and environmental concerns. Using paper, Nicole Tilley’s work highlights overlooked historical domestic narratives and mental health experiences. Norman McCloskey’s work is shaped by the landscape of the Beara Peninsula, which he has explored with his camera for 29 years.
Brave Orlaith to take to the catwalk for cancer charity | By Michelle Crean It’ll be an emotional night for Killarney lady Orlaith Monks, who, after overcoming breast cancer, plans to bravely take to the catwalk next Wednesday night. The 51-year-old, who is originally from Ross Road and now lives in Beaufort, now hopes to help raise funds and awareness for the sixth annual ‘Models in Recovery Fashion Show’. Orlaith, who courageously had a double mastectomy, will be amongst approximately 20 others who have fought cancer, in the INEC on Wednesday next for the Killarney branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. And, although Orlaith says she’s used to the stage following shows with Killarney Musical Society, she admitted it will be an emotional rollercoaster on the night. “It will be very emotional for me, I never in a million years thought I’d be on the stage as a cancer survivor,” Orlaith told the Killarney Advertiser.
“I’m not nervous. I’m doing it for those who can’t do it.” Feeling off for many years Orlaith decided to visit her doctor to discuss HRT treatment for the menopause. However, in order to take the prescription she was advised to get a mammogram, but was called back a week later as the result wasn’t clear. Not worried about anything sinister, Orlaigh, a mother of three, went back and was told that she had a lump and that it was HER2 Negative breast cancer. After many tests and biopsies, Orlaith took the brave step and decided to have both breasts removed and was relieved to hear that she didn’t need any chemotherapy treatment afterwards. “I felt liberated,” she said. “They don’t define me, I’m still the same person I was two years ago. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I wasn’t doing it for myself, I did it for my family. I feel very lucky that I dodged a bullet. I wasn’t one for checking myself but I’d say to anyone to check yourself.”

Although they may not have stopped Dublin’s drive for five – that didn’t deter thousands of well-wishers of all ages from lining the streets of Killarney to welcome the Kerry Senior footballers home.
“Gentlemen, be very proud of yourselves and hold your head up high because I can assure you we’re all proud of you and everyone here is proud of you.” A number of Kerry players addressed the crowd gathered before Peter Keane spoke. “It’s very humbling,” Keane said. "There’s no question about it, we are very disappointed. These players have been absolutely terrific for us and management. I want to thank them all for what they have done for Kerry over the last 12 months. The players have given their all. We will be back, we want to give ye more, the intention is to be here again.”
Sea of green and gold greets Kerry footballers Thousands donned their green and gold, brought flags and banners as they happily welcomed Kerry’s leading footballers, who were on an open top bus, through Killarney’s streets. Players disembarked to the tune of ‘The Boys are Back in Town’ before heading to the stage in the Glebe car park. And, although they appeared deflated, the footballers and Kerry Senior Football Manager Peter Keane took some time out for fans.
Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson, and Mayor of Kerry Cllr Niall Kelleher, welcomed the team back home. “It takes courage to step on the stage in this difficult evening,” Cllr Gleeson said. “On behalf of all gathered here I thank you most sincerely for that courage and that level of respect for the county and its supporters.” Mayor of Kerry Cllr Niall Kelleher added, that each and every player deserves our heartfelt thanks.

HORANS Healthstores

This week we’re looking at the role hormones have to play in the body and tips on how women can combat PMS symptoms.
Dealing with PMS While PMS is simply the way hormones change during the monthly cycle - it can have a massive impact on a woman’s life. A combination of symptoms can begin a week or so before the period begins and linger for the first few days. Type and severity of symptoms do of course vary for every woman, but there is no doubt that the impact it has on a women’s day to day life is not pleasant. Each woman with PMS will have her own personal pattern of symptoms, some of which may include: cramps, bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness, emotional issues, headaches and skin problems. The most effective way to identify if you are suffering from PMS is to keep a diary of any changes you notice coming up to your period. Do this for three to four months. Note how severe they are and how long they last as your doctor may need to rule out any other condition before confirming you have PMS. Approximately 85 percent of women will admit having suffered from PMS at some stage - so you are by no means alone! A lot of women will also admit that they tolerate these symptoms every month as they are not aware of the natural remedies which may help with symptoms and allow them to go about their day effectively during this difficult time.
SOME OF THESE INCLUDE:
AGNUS CASTUS: effective in dealing with breast tenderness, cramping, headaches and heavy painful periods. KRILL OIL FOR WOMEN: Take two capsules a day to help ease irritability, bloating and tiredness. It’s also beneficial for the skin. EVENING PRIMROSE OIL, MAGNESI-
UM, B-VITAMINS especially B6 are other products to consider. There are also some excellent homeopathic remedies which can be very effective and are worth asking about! As always food plays a major role in our hormone and overall health - so be smart about your food choices when dealing with PMS; reduce your sugar, salt and caffeine intake as these can lead to bloating, mood swings and anxiousness. Look instead to STEVIA or XYLITOL in place of sugar and try some of the delicious herbal teas available. It is important to remember that insulin sensitivity may be reduced around the time of your period so try not to give into those sugar cravings as this will only make the situation worse. Eat regularly leading up to your period to stabilise blood sugar levels. Include plenty of high fibre and protein rich food such as wholegrain cereals, seeds, nuts, root vegetables and fruits to keep your digestive system moving and your energy levels steady. Drink plenty of water. Rather than causing you to retain more fluid, additional water will stimulate your body to flush away toxins and remove excess fluid in the process. Remember that stress can have an effect on your blood sugar levels which may lead to cravings, so try to keep this under control. Keep a bottle of Rescue Remedy or Emergency Essence handy to help with this. Exercise helps to release feel-good chemicals known as endorphins. These can help with mood swings, keep stress levels under control, and may also help keep your mind off those food cravings!
Until next time, stay healthy, FROM ALL AT HORAN’S HEALTH.

New certificate in Revenue Management Course A new certificate in Revenue Management, developed by South Kerry Skillnet (SKS) in conjunction with the IT Tralee and the hotel industry has been launched this week. The certificate course, aimed at organisations who wish to provide continuous support and professional development upskilling existing or potential reservations/revenue managers, requires those participating to attend at the IT Tralee for one day a week for a 12 week period as well as completing an online module. It is also targeted at General Managers and Deputy Managers as well as members of the sales team. Successful applicants will receive accreditation at a Level 7 special purpose award. SKS Manager Aoife O’Reilly said the course has been developed as a response to requests from the hotel industry for a focused course on Revenue Management. “There is a skills gap in this area which has been highlighted and coming from a hospitality background I was able to hold consultation days in order to ensure that the modules and course content were filling this skills gap,” Aoife said. In support of this course, they are also including an Excel module which will appeal to anyone creating, reading or presenting reports. “This programme also facilitates collaborations between enterprise, academic in-

Tourism Ireland, together with a delegation of 13 Irish and Canadian companies – including Parknasilla Resort & Spa, has been undertaking a three-city sales blitz to Canada this week. They met with group tour organisers and travel agents in the cities of London in South-west Ontario, Ottawa and Montreal – to continue to grow Ireland’s share of this important travel market. The sales blitz involved a B2B workshop and networking session in each city, where Parknasilla Resort & Spa and the other Irish companies had the opportunity to sell to influential Canadian travel professionals – telling them about the many opportunities Ireland offers for group travel, as well as highlighting ease of access from Canada to Ireland, our rich heritage and culture and superb cuisine. “We are delighted that so many key decision-makers from the group travel sector in Canada took the time to meet with our tourism partners from Ireland this week,” Dana Welch, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Canada, said. “Travel agents
and tour operators remain an important booking channel for Canadian holidaymakers – so, a key element of our annual programme of activity involves working closely with the travel trade, both online and offline.” In 2018, we welcomed 244,000 Canadian visitors to the island of Ireland, she added, with Tourism Ireland rolling out an extensive programme of promotions again in 2019, to build on that success. “We are undertaking an extensive and targeted programme of activity throughout 2019, to continue to grow Canadian visitor numbers to Kerry, the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland. Our sales blitz this week provides an excellent platform to kick-start our promotional effort for 2020. Our message here in Canada is that it has never been easier to get to Ireland, with more airline seats from more gateways than ever before.”

When love and sport collide
When it comes to basketball and even football for that matter - Head Coach of the Ireland Senior Women’s Basketball team James Weldon is top of his game – so it was only fitting that one of the biggest sports games of the year accidently coincided with his wedding to Sharon Ahern on Saturday.

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

The former St Paul’s Killarney player, James (43) from Barleymount Killarney and Sharon (34) from St James Gate in Killorglin set time aside on their big day to fit in the All-Ireland Replay. The weather was stunning as the couple gathered with family and friends in the Killarney Oaks Hotel for a beautiful and emotional spiritual outdoor ceremony followed by a reception afterwards. The bridal party included Sharon’s sisters, Rachel Ahern as Maid of Honour, Louise O’Sullivan and Emily O’Sullivan. Best Man was the groom’s brother Padraig, with groomsmen Michael Weldon, also the groom’s brother, and friends David O’Flaherty and Jim Hughes. Pageboys were Sharon’s nephews Josh O’Sullivan, Sean Ahern, Jack Ahern, Jamie O’Sullivan, with James’ Godchild Ella Flaherty as Flowergirl. Photographer Adrian O'Neill of Stay Wild Images whisked the bridal party off to Muckross Abbey before they headed back to the hotel in time for the Kerry Dublin Replay.
The couple were joined by James’ parents Seamus and Eileen and Sharon’s parents John and Christine, family and friends for the match kick off at 6pm – after a bit of rejuggling with the dinner by hotel staff. James, who worked with the background team for former Senior Kerry Football Manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice in 2018, would have liked to travel to Croke Park for the game. However, he explained that it made the day very special. “When the replay date came out it was a bit of a shock,” James told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was never a case that we weren’t going to show the game and the hotel organised a big screen. It was obviously a disappointing result and about 20 people opted out of the wedding to go to the game - but it was different for us, that’s for sure.” The couple are now enjoying a bit of time out from wedding plans and sport with a few days break in Portugal.

Local couple celebrate 50th wedding anniversary On September 16, 1969 Tim and Joan Cronin were married in Caherdaniel Church. Later that day their wedding party celebrated at the Dromhall Hotel on the Muckross Road. Exactly a half century later the happy couple walked through the doors of the same hotel to celebrate 50 years of married bliss. They were joined by daughters Sandra and Joanne and sons Daniel, Ian and Jason, and eight of their nine grandchildren as unfortunately one of Ian’s sons Adam was too ill to travel. “We had a lovely evening with the family,” Ian told the Killarney Advertiser. “The Dromhall were just brilliant and Bernadette Randles had a private word with mom and dad and welcomed them to the hotel which was really nice.”

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
The impact of hedges for wildlife is underestimated Hedging is used in a wide range of situations; privacy, shelter or to act as a barrier. They can also be used to divide sections of garden or they to frame parts of the garden. In the main however, we use them as perimeters to our land. With the dormant season coming up, October through to the end of March, this is when plants stop growing and they can be sold as bare-root hedging, making it much cheaper when you are buying in bulk. When taking the bare-rooted option, the easiest way to plant them is by digging a trench, usually a spade’s width is enough. If you have access to old farmyard manure, dig some into the bottom of the trench, or else use some general purpose fertiliser such as Grow More, or Bone Meal, which is also a good option in the autumn. Make sure roots do not touch the fertiliser as this will burn them. Place your plants into the trench, not planting them any deeper than where they had been previously, and tease the roots out into several directions. Backfill the trench with soil. If your soil is poor or very heavy, it is beneficial to use a mixture of soil and compost. The most common hedges are: the Leyland cypress as they are fast growing - almost 3ft per year, can take a lot of wind and are full from the bottom up. The main drawback is the fact that they grow faster and larger than is often planned for. They have lost popularity over the years, because of their size mainly. Griselinia hedging was probably the most popular hedge until the bad winters of 2010/11 when a lot of it was lost. Another evergreen, its main feature is that it can be clipped tightly, and so is ideal for narrow spaces. The third most
popular hedge is the Laurel, which is also evergreen, extremely fast growing and dense, but a greedy plant needing regular feeding to prevent it going yellow. Alternative hedges are Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea, a good thorny barrier with purple foliage and striking autumn colour. It grows fast and is very suited to tight clipping. Cotoneaster dielsianus has an abundance of berries in the autumn and is often evergreen. Fuchsia, while not evergreen, provides so much colour in the summer that it is well worth planting. The Guelder Rose or Viburnum opulus, flowers white in the spring, earning it the name Snowball bush, and produces copious amounts of bright red berries from September onwards – which are excellent in flower arrangements. The Spindle bush is also a wonderful plant in a hedge. It has barely noticeable flowers in the spring, but the berries are bright pink with an orange centre in autumn. Ideally I would always recommend using native plants such as Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Beech and Holly. Apart from Beech, these all provide birds with a food source during the winter. Holly has the extra advantage of being evergreen while Beech keeps its old leaves well into the spring which I think is attractive, though some may think it depressing! Apart from all the practical reasons we plant hedges, I think the most important feature of a hedge is often overlooked. The impact of hedges on wildlife is underestimated, not just in the countryside, but definitely in an urban setting. They provide habitats, food and wildlife corridors and therefore are of vital importance to our native animals and birds. To this end, a mixed hedge is always preferable.

Killarney Guide Leaders achieve Guiding’s highest accolade! | By Michelle Crean While living on just €3.25 a day and completing a 180km hike and 12 projects in 10 days - two Killarney Guide Leaders reached the pinnacle of Guiding! Sarah Canavan (23) of Knockasartnett and her team-mate, Sarah Kenny (23) of Firies were among 12 Irish Girl Guides members to take on the Explorer Belt challenge in Belgium - while carrying all their camping and cooking equipment, clothes, food and water. The challenge is held every three or four years to test the skills young women have learned through their involvement in Guiding. The two Sarahs, along with 12 Irish Girl Guides, kept a log book and successfully completed a series of projects during their 10-day survival adventure in the Westhoek region. The projects involved finding out about the local culture, history and geography without using a smartphone and doing a service for the local community. Their route
took in many of the Flanders Fields historical battle sites as well as towns and countryside and a day at the seaside. “Overall, it was a great experience,” Sarah Kenny, who works as a dietitian in St James’s Hospital in Dublin, said. “There were many challenges and long days but the people we met along the way were so lovely and so kind. One of the highlights was our first indoor night when we didn’t have to put up our tent, and our lovely hosts made us dinner. Another was finding the most delicious ice-cream after a long day walking.” There were many challenges along the way but the two Sarahs never felt like giving up. “Some days were hard but I think we were both a bit too stubborn to give up,” said Sarah Kenny. The highlights were meeting the local people – “everyone was so welcoming” – and learning about World War 1, she added. “I genuinely didn’t know anything about World War 1 before taking part in the Belt,” Sarah Canavan, a Commerce student at NUI Galway, said.
WHAT A CHALLENGE: Sarah Canavan (left) and Sarah Kenny (right), who completed the Explorer Belt challenge in Belgium.
There were blisters, sunburn and extreme tiredness at times during the 10 days, but these subsided on the last day when they were collected by the organisers. “The biggest highlight was definitely getting on the bus at the end and collecting all the other teams and hearing their stories,” said Sarah Kenny. “Re-
Plans to establish Killarney as a gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way Progress was made on Friday to develop Killarney as a Gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way. Fáilte Ireland met with key stakeholders and businesses to discuss the next steps for the strategy that will establish Killarney as a gateway town for visitors exploring the Wild Atlantic Way. Killarney was chosen as one of two pi-
lot towns/cities to test the Wild Atlantic Way Gateway concept alongside Limerick City over a three-year period. The Killarney Wild Atlantic Way Gateway Strategy will be finalised later this year, with recommendations and actions for
local industry from 2020 – 2022. The meeting took place at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney and was attended by members of the Killarney tourism industry, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, the local authority, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Irish Hotel’s Federation and local industry representatives, who

ceiving the Explorer Belt, following the assessment interviews, was such a great feeling. We were extremely nervous beforehand and had convinced ourselves we weren’t going to get it.” “There was pain at times but I cannot remember the pain now,” Sarah Canavan said. “It was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” are all part of a Steering Group for the Killarney Wild Atlantic Way Gateway Strategy. Killarney was identified by Fáilte Ireland as a Wild Atlantic Way Gateway as it offers visitors a broad range of accommodation, a wide variety of day time visitor attractions and activities, plenty of restaurants and evening entertainment and it is a main transport hub for the area. “Kerry has already benefitted enormously from the Wild Atlantic Way but we need to continue to harness its potential and focus on trying to grow and build on that success year on year with new projects and initiatives,” Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD said. “With its proximity to the Wild Atlantic Way route and so much to offer visitors, Killarney is the perfect base.” Bernadette Randles, a local hotelier and Chairperson of the Irish Hotels Federation Kerry branch, who is a member of the Killarney Wild Atlantic Way Gateway Strategy Steering Group, added that the Wild Atlantic Way has been a phenomenal success. “This strategy is a great opportunity for tourism businesses to capitalise on the popularity of the route by enticing visitors to come to Killarney and Kerry, stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants and experience everything the town has to offer.”

New walking trail guide for Listowel’s Childers Park
A new guide to the Childers Town Park and Woodlands Walking Trail in Listowel has been launched by the Cathaoirleach of Listowel Municipal District, Cllr Jimmy Moloney. The walking guide is one of a series of local improvements funded through the Department of Rural and Community Development under the 2018 Outdoor Recreation Investment Scheme. Walkways including the development of the one-kilometre Millennium Walk, two-kilometre Feale Walk and four-kilometre River Walk are clearly signposted

with new colour coded way-markers and are included in the new guide. They are also clearly identified on new maps hand-painted by local artist Amy Sheehy and which are displayed on lectern units throughout Childers Park and Woodlands. In addition, new information signage has been erected, including directional fingerpost signs. Accessibility has been improved with the erection of new accessible picnic table sets and benches and widening a number of access routes. Childers Park and Woodlands on Bridge Road in Listowel is the only local author-
ity park in Kerry to hold the prestigious Green Flag Award. “Childers Park and Woodlands have provided a place of enjoyment and happy memories for generations of townspeople and Kerry County Council are committed to continue its investment for the enjoyment of the people of Listowel and North Kerry and the many visitors to the area,” Cllr Moloney said. “I would like to acknowledge the work of the local community groups along with Listowel Tidy Towns in the maintenance of Childers Park and Woodlands and also the Municipal staff of Kerry County Council.”
California emissions ruling is a dig at Obama President Trump has probably gone against the entire political feelings of the western world in his latest move. On Wednesday he stripped California of its right to set its own vehicle emissions standards and banned other states from setting similar rules. The waiver allowed the State to set stricter standards than the Federal Government. "The Trump Administration is re-
voking California's Federal Waiver on emissions in order to produce far less expensive cars for the consumer, while at the same time making the cars substantially SAFER," Trump tweeted. Of course, he never said why cars will be safer following this move. California's waiver under the Clean Air Act allowed it to set standards tighter than the federal standards, which have been adopted by more than a dozen states and became
The prestigious award dates back to the 13th Century and is awarded by the City of London to individuals who have made a significant impact on business and financial growth in the capital. O’Sullivan moved to London in 1971 from Glenbeigh, as a 16-year-old who worked for John Murphy & Sons before branching out and setting up the Danny Sullivan Group in 1986. “Danny is a role model to so many people for his incredible work ethic and his achievements in London,” said a Danny Sullivan and Sons company spokesperson. “This award is testament to the tremendous impact he has had in business and also on so many people’s lives.”

the de-facto nationwide standard, because automakers do not design different sets of vehicles to meet different standards in different states. Like every decision made by Trump, there is more to this than ‘merely’ setting acceptable emissions standards in California and other states. This move is not to offer cheaper cars to the American public, nor is it any sort of political move to win favour and votes in other states. In reality, it is a dig at the previous administration after Barack Obama set new environmental standards across the entire United Sates. Simply put, revoking California’s rights is just another way of making Obama wrong.

Facebook fundraisers hit over €1.8 billion milestone Birthday fundraisers are the gift that keeps on giving according to latest data from Facebook. New figures show fundraisers on Facebook have now raised over €1.8 billion worldwide for non-profit and personal causes. And in Facebook’s own 15th birthday year, more people than ever before now use their birthday to champion causes they care about - with over half the money raised donated through Facebook’s birthday tool. More than 45 million people worldwide have donated to, or created, a fundraiser on Facebook since the launch of Facebook’s fundraising tools in 2015 – double the amount reported in November last year. The data highlights a growing trend for philanthropic gift-giving, as people take to social media to help raise awareness and make an impact in their communities. The Irish Cancer Society, in particular, has
received incredible support from the Irish public, raising €1.3 million in funds, since it launched on the platform in 2018. Other successful charity fundraisers include the likes of Pieta House. People can also create their own fundraisers for non-profits or personal causes, or use the donate button to pledge their support. “It’s incredible to see our community mobilise around the causes they care about and raise millions for important charities in Ireland and billions for projects worldwide,” Gareth Lambe, Head of Facebook, Ireland, said. “Birthday donations now sit at the very heart of that activity and it’s heartening to see a growing trend for celebrating in a more meaningful way. Over the past few years, Facebook has become a really powerful tool for fundraising, helping organisations like the Irish Cancer Society and Pieta House, along with a host of others that benefit from people’s generosity.”
Tradition screened in Dublin Fresh from its ‘Best Film’ win at Wexford Film Festival, 'Tradition' was back in the capital with a screening at The Lighthouse Cinema by IFTA – with a special tribute to the late, great Brendan Grace on Monday night. It is the second feature film from OC Productions after feature film ‘The Gift’, was released in cinemas during April 2017. OC Productions latest Feature ‘Tradition’ directed by Damian O’Callaghan tells the story of a Judge who on his last day on the bench finds himself presiding over the most controversial case – his court –
and his town has ever seen. Tradition is written by Damian O’Callaghan (The Gift, Bouncers) and Claire Corrigan (Dracula Untold, Poison Pen, The Martini Shot). Tradition stars Paul Ronan (The Devils Own, Veronica Guerin) Pascal Scott (The Young Offenders, Grabbers), Brian Harty (The Professor and the Madman, The Timekeeper), Marty Morrissey (RTE) with Micheàl Ó Muírcheartaigh (RTE) and comedy legend Brendan Grace. Cinematography is by Conor Fleming (The Young Offenders, Cardboard Gangsters) and was edited by Declan O’Shea (The Gift).
“Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh is one of the best and most exciting poets to have emerged in recent years,” the judges, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Gabriel Fitzmaurice, said in their citation. They describe ‘Tost agus Allagar’ as a wonderful collection in which the poet “speaks from the heart” of love, language, and dislocation. Born and reared in Tralee, Ailbhe was awarded a BA, MA and PhD at NUI Galway and now lectures in Modern Irish at UCC. She also studied and taught in France for a period and spent a year in New York on a Fulbright scholarship. Ailbhe’s poem ‘Filleadh ar an gCathair’ was chosen as Ireland’s EU Presidency poem in 2013 and was shortlisted in 2015 for RTÉ’s ‘A Poem for Ireland’. “I write poetry in an attempt to understand the world around me and to make sense of what’s going on within me,” she said. “That said, I am really interested in writing about experiences that aren’t my own; I think there is great capacity for empathy in poetry, something that is particularly striking in Michael Hartnett’s work. “The Michael Hartnett Award affirms the legitimacy of writing in either language, or, indeed both. The breadth of Hartnett’s literary achievements, as

poet in English and Irish, and as translator from Irish, Spanish and other languages, is quite astounding. Given that ‘Tost agus Allagar’ deals with the theme of language and modes of communication, it is a particular privilege that it will receive the Michael Harnett Award this year.” The award will be presented to her at the opening of Éigse Michael Hartnett on Thursday, October 3, at 8pm in Newcastle West Library.
New Kids Clinic opens Yesterday (Thursday), The Kids Clinic, which will meet the needs of children with complex needs and their families in Kerry, officially opened their new centre in Killarney, and also announced plans to expand over the coming months. Located at 79 New Street, the service employs some of the best clinicians in the country and uses experienced multi-disciplinary teams in the assessment and development of therapies for children with complex needs, this includes children with autism, intellectual disability and physical disability who require input from a multidisciplinary team. Kerry is one of two locations opened yesterday, and over the coming months The Kids Clinic will grow from its two
clinics in Munster (Kerry and Cork) to a total of eight by the end of 2019 with further plans to expand nationwide within the next 24 months. “I am very proud of the work we do at The Kids Clinic,” Clinical Psychologist at The Kids Clinic, Sara Collins said. “Our approach, which is collaborative and centred around the child, means that therapies and interventions are developed in consultation with parents, care givers, teachers and through gaining a full understanding of the child’s day-to-day life. Adapting interventions based on real life rather than expecting the child to change their life to suit therapies is more effective and gives children the best chance in reaching their potential.” Full information on the clinics, locations and prices are available at thekidsclinic.ie.

Detox the body
If you’re feeling sluggish, tired and not motivated and can’t seem to get started in the morning or are putting on weight and just not feeling yourself then the Elite Universal Contour Body Wrap might be just what you need. It’s not only an inch program - but an overall detox plan, utilising the chrysalis electrodes, a faradic current with tiny electrical impulses which stimulate the lymphatic system to speed up the natural detox system in the body. It helps eliminate old cells and toxins that build up. We naturally excrete them all the time, but stress, bad diet, eating on the go and not getting enough water, fruit and vegetables etc., can make the body sluggish, tired and drained. As a result the skin gets dull. With Christmas around the corner and the kids back to school, there has never been a batter time to take some time for you.
5
The lymphatic system runs alongside blood circulation, so if one is sluggish the other will be too. Body brush the skin not just the kitchen floor! Drink at least eight glasses of water every day and take a half hour brisk walk. This all helps get the blood to flow evenly around the body. It’s all about keeping the circulation going. Try the Universal Contour Body Wrap - not only for inch loss - but for a massive detox. We recommend a three day detox after each wrap for best results. Call Jill for an appointment or more info on 064 6632966.

Helpful tips for planning a First Communion party Being organised is the key to a successful party – allowing you to relax and enjoy the special occasion. First Holy Communion parties begin in late spring and continue until early summer. A check-list and strict budget are vital. Here’s what to consider when planning: • The number of guests • Catering – is it a buffet or sit-down meal? • Cake – are you having one? Book early to avoid disappointment • Invitations • Decorations • Entertainment and activities • Photography – friend or professional? One of the most important aspects to a successful day is your budget. Early on work out what is affordable and stick to it. Don’t put yourself under financial pressure. As this is an event that must cater for all ages – everyone should have a day to enjoy and remember. If you’re doing the food yourself then a buffet-style spread is often the most popular choice as it offers guests a variety of dishes to suit all tastes. If you get the caterer to supply the main dishes, you can bulk up the offering with some
homemade desserts and cakes to add a personal touch. You could ask family or friends to bring desserts/salads. If serving hot food, hiring in chafing dishes or a bain marie might be worthwhile.
DECORATE TO IMPRESS
Disposable tableware and glassware is a great idea and saves on the washing up! However, if your numbers are bigger and you want a sit-down meal, or just a more elegant feel to your buffet, you can hire in everything. It’s a great option; from the cutlery and crockery to table linen and glassware – there’s no clean up! Don’t be afraid to ask a friend to come to the house while you are at the church to help get everything ready. You will have your hands full getting yourself and your child ready in the morning.
KEEP LITTLE ONES BUSY!
Ask an older cousin if they would like to ‘entertain’ the younger ones for a little while during the party. Story-telling and face-painting are always fun on these occasions and it keeps the little ones occupied and engaged. Setting aside a ‘play area’ and perhaps some games for the children gives them focus. Most importantly have your comfy shoes ready and relax and enjoy it.

Beaufort runners-up in national competition Members of the Beaufort Active Retirement team have taken home the runners-up prize at Active Retirement Ireland’s 2019 National Bowls Competition and Activity Break in the Small Bowls Plate Competition. 60 teams from across the country took part in the competition, which took place at the INEC, in Killarney. “The Beaufort team of Margaret Sweeney, Michael Moloney, Alan Ferriter and Eileen Rooney, narrowly missed out on winning the Small Bowls Plate Competition,” Maureen Kavanagh, Chief Executive of Active Retirement Ireland, said.
The Secret Restaurant and Bar on New Market Lane is an Asian street food restaurant with a difference. For €19.95, and a time limit of 90 minutes, patrons of the Secret Restaurant have a choice of 10 different main courses, a range of starters, a salad bar and a dessert bar. Such is the choice you, customers are advised to arrive hungry. It is also Kerry’s first venue to offer a Sisha water pipe smoking experience - a
tradition popular in Arabic countries but so far an uncommon sight in Ireland. The venue was officially opened by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson, on Thursday last. Owner Saiza Siddique, who also operates the adjacent Uptown Restaurant says her new venture offers a mix of Indian or Chinese foods. “As soon as people come in they really like the place,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.
“They are very strong and impressive runners-up in the competition. I have no doubt they will be back again next year to try and take the top spot.” In addition to the national bowls competition, activity highlights at the three-day Active Retirement Ireland event included the organisation’s inaugural pickleball championship, walks, cookery demonstrations, and yoga.

Simple health hacks to make life healthier Not everyone has the luxury of being able to spend hours at the gym and meal prepping. Let’s be honest, even if we did have the time, it doesn’t necessarily mean we would like to spend it in that way. Here are a few tips to keep you healthy day in and day out without too much time or effort.
SCHEDULE WORKOUTS AND JUMP INTO GROUP CLASSES
Putting your workouts in your planner makes it more likely to happen. Treat it the same as any other appointment. In addition, make the best use of your time by jumping into group classes that are pre-planned and include warm-ups! Another option is to work one-on-one with a coach that will provide specific programming for you dependent on your needs and time constraints. This makes it easy to get a good workout in within the hour without having to put much thought into it.
performances in INEC
International Irish Dancing phenomenon Riverdance has landed in Killarney with shows running until this Sunday. For over two decades nothing has carried the energy, the sensuality and the spectacle as the show has had over 11,500 performances to over 25 million people throughout 47 countries. On April 30, 1994 Riverdance began as the interval act during that year’s Eurovision Song Contest, in front of a worldwide TV audience of over 300 million. The seven minute performance earned a standing ovation from the 4000-strong live audience. This, ahead of its time dance piece, was then developed into a full stage show by producer Moya Doherty, composer Bill Whelan and Director John McColgan.
With its fusion of Irish and International music and dance, Riverdance broke all box office records during its world premières in Dublin, London and New York and continued to set new records in packed theatres and arenas throughout the world. Staying true to its roots, Riverdance returns to Killarney with a rejuvenated show, featuring the unbelievable talent of the Riverdance lead dancers, the Riverdance Irish Dance Troupe, the live Riverdance band and international artists from Russia, Spain and the USA, the show is guaranteed to mesmerise audiences of all ages and cultures.
PURCHASE HEALTHY CONVENIENCE FOODS FOR MEAL PREP There are an abundance of healthy foods available in shops nowadays. Aldi is stocking NutriQuick meals which are a great option. Many shops like SuperValu and Centra are stocking prepped salads for those lunchtimes when you are under pressure for time and you haven’t prepped your meals. There is always a better option. You just need to take your time and make the best choice for YOU.
MAKE SMALL CHANGES Take the stairs, park in the farthest spot, take a walk with a friend during your lunch break. These small changes add up and they boost your mood and energy. Also, eat slowly and mindfully, drink enough water and get enough sleep!

Firies childcare centre celebrates 20 years For two decades they’ve been at the heart of the local community and now Firies Community Childcare Centre are planning a 20 year anniversary celebration. Located opposite the church and close to the school, the service has a beautiful sensory rich playground which the children have access to throughout the day and where they take part in flower gardening during the year. They also offer a Breakfast Club, two sessions of preschool and an afterschool service. And this Sunday, to mark the milestone occasion, they’ve planning a celebration at 12pm with a bouncy castle for the children and refreshments for everyone. The centre was established in 1999 by four local parents who saw the need in the community, explained Centre Manager Ivonne Kraemer. “The pre-school first opened in the local primary school, thanks to the Principal
Jerry Foley, and the cooperation of the school staff. We then moved to the local community hall. In 2007, through grant aid, a purpose built facility was built beside the local school. This ensured we were in a position to offer Breakfast Club, two sessions of pre-school and an afterschool service. “Our location opposite the church and close to the school ensures the children attending Breakfast Club and afterschool have a safe pathway between the centre and the school. Ample car parking is available as we are off the main road ensuring safety for children.” She added that they’d like to welcome the community to their planned celebration where they can take the opportunity to thank all the parents of the community for their ongoing support. “Please join us on Sunday at 12pm for a celebration. We look forward to the next 20 years!”

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING “Since moving to Killarney from Wales in 2016, I was always aiming to start up my own independent physiotherapy clinic. Since making the jump in August of 2018, the success of my clinic so far has in no small part been down to the team at the Killarney Advertiser. I was really surprised at the number of enquiries that come through the advertiser. With their advice and support my clinic is going from strength to strength and is worth every penny. I would highly recommend anyone considering doing advertising, to do so with the Killarney Advertiser team. Thanks again!.”

SECOND GENERATION: Darren McCormick with fellow Killarney and District Motor Club member Dan Keane at last Sunday’s Clare Rally.
Clerk of Course appointed to Killarney Historic rally History is being made by Killarney and District Motor Club as Darren McCormick has been appointed as Clerk of the Course for the forthcoming Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally - the first second-generation clerk in the 42year history of the club. Darren is following in the footsteps of his father Gary who clerked the rally three times between 1999 and 2001. Gary has the unique distinction of acting as Clerk of the Course on all three of the club’s ral-
lies having also run the International Rally of the Lakes five times between 2005 and 2009 and the now defunct Killarney Forestry Rally on one occasion. “I started in motorsport at a very young age,” Darren said. “I started out marshalling and covered all areas up along from arrival control to stop car. Then I started with the taping crews, went on doing Equipment Officer, Chief Marshal, Club Safety Officer and Deputy Clerk of the Course.” The Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally will run on November 30.

ROAD TRIP: This 1958 Bentley was driven from Germany to Cars and Coffee on Sunday, a journey of over 1600km
From Germany with love A rare 1958 Bentley Derby was the star attraction at last Sunday’s second Cars and Coffee Killarney. The 61-year-old locally based car arrived at KC Print, the event’s host venue, after owner Florian Seidler drove it from a classic car show in Germany. Seidler runs Glenbeigh-based Pristine Classics and restored the car in 2011. It was the first car that Florian and his son Leon restored when they set up Pristine Classics eight years ago. Earlier this year they attended the world famous Techno-Classica Essen, one of the world’s biggest classic car shows with the Bentley. They left the car in Germany after the show but decided last week the time was right to bring it home and drove
the car 1640 kilometres (1020 miles) from Essen just in time for the Cars and Coffee Killarney meet at KC Print on Sunday morning. “People give you some great looks when they see you passing them on the motorway in France or Germany at 140kmh,” Florian told the Killarney Advertiser. “We got a great welcome at Cars and Coffee. I was really surprised by the amount of people and cars there. Everyone in Kerry has a story about a car. We were given pride and place, right up on the lawn outside KC Print, it was like Pebble Beach.” Cars and Coffee Killarney co-organiser Ger Neeson praised the efforts of volunteer marshals Dan O’Leary, Tom Leslie and Edmund Myers, who ensured the smooth running of the event.

In loving memory of Micheál O’Donoghue, Farmyard, Ross Road, Killarney, Who died on 20th September 2014.
It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, A part of us went with you, The day God called you home. If tears could build a stairway, And heartaches build a lane, We’d walk our way to heaven, And bring you back again. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place, No one could ever fill.
The moment that you died Our hearts were torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you. Remembering you as our friend is easy, We do it everyday, But missing you is the heartache, That never goes away.
Sadly missed by your cousins Adrian, Eileen, Kieran, Alan, Conor, Louise, Niall and families.
We hold you so tightly within our hearts, And there you shall remain, Until that day arrives, That we will all meet again, Forever friends we will always remain. From your ever loving group of friends. xxxxxx

Just think of them as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, in a place of warmth and comfort, Where there are no days and years. Think how they must be wishing, That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of them as living, In the hearts of those they touched... For nothing loved is ever lost And they were loved so much. Sadly missed by Catherine, Lile and Eileen and their families Anniversary Mass for Paddy & Lil will take place Wednesday the 25th of September at 6.15pm in St Mary’s Cathedral.

Heartbreak for Kerry as Dubs make history | By Adam Moynihan
A remarkable goal by half-back Eoin Murchan just nine seconds into the second half proved crucial as Dublin defeated Kerry in the 2019 All-Ireland SFC final replay on Saturday. The Kingdom weathered an early storm to go in level at 10 points apiece at the break but Murchan’s strike, the only goal of the game, very much set the tone for a second half in which the defending champions were dominant. The Kingdom weathered an early storm to go in level at 10 points apiece at the break but Murchan’s strike, the only goal of the game, very much set the tone for a second half in which the defending champions were dominant. Exhibiting the consummate professionalism that Jim Gavin’s charges have become known for, Dublin kept Kerry at arm’s length down the stretch and in truth they were good value for their sixpoint win. Kerry had the champions on the ropes in the drawn game but the replay proved to be a bridge too far as Dublin became the first senior men’s team in the history of the GAA to win five All-Ireland titles in a row.
POOR START
Kerry’s man markers kept Dublin’s dan-
germen quiet on September 1 but this time out the signs were bad for Peter Keane right from the off. The opening exchanges were played entirely on Dublin’s terms and by the ninth minute, Con O’Callaghan, Ciarán Kilkenny (twice) and Paul Mannion (twice) had found the target as the Dubs ran up a commanding 5-1 lead. The Munster champions persevered, however, and some accurate kicking at the other end from Seán O’Shea, Paul Geaney, Adrian Spillane and the excellent David Clifford kept them in the hunt. With a number of contentious calls seemingly going Kerry’s way, Hill 16 was growing increasingly frustrated and The Kingdom eventually drew level late in the first half thanks to points by O’Shea (free) and Geaney.

CROKE PARK TURNING POINT
The green and gold faithful inside a packed Croke Park would have been optimistic heading into the second half but any hopes of an upset were dealt a crushing blow within seconds of the restart. Kerry midfielder David Moran got to the throw-in first but he could only bat the ball down to Eoin Murchan, who had encroached (along with his marker Adrian Spillane, teammate John Small and Kerry’s Seán O’Shea) a full 20 metres to Dublin’s 65-metre line. The man from Na Fianna, who was a late addition to the starting line-up at the expense of Michael Darragh Macauley, gathered possession and knifed directly through the heart of the Kerry defence. As Moran chased back in vain, Murchan appeared to take nine or ten steps before
dispatching the ball beyond the reach of Kerry keeper Shane Ryan. Clifford, Geaney and O’Shea again stepped up to the mark to keep Kerry in the contest but Man of the Match Ciarán Kilkenny and the ever-threatening Mannion replied as Dublin re-established their imposing second-half lead. With five points between the sides and 73 minutes on the clock, the boys in blue had a straightforward-looking chance to seal their win with a goal but Shane Ryan made a fabulous double save from Diarmuid Connolly and then O’Callaghan. Dean Rock nailed the resulting 45, however, and when Stephen O’Brien’s attempted back-post volley was deflected high and wide into the net in front of the Hill, it was clear that Kerry’s day was done.

Keane felt that Kerry squandered some decent scoring chances during the game with Stephen Cluxton's save to deny Stephen O'Brien in the 54th minute a critical intervention. Murchan's goal was key according to Keane. "It was, but by the same token if you are going to concede one it might be as good a time as any to concede one because you are going to have another 30 or 40 minutes to go after it," Keane reflected. "When we had the goal chance ourselves what were we down a few points. If you had taken that ... we had chances we just didn’t convert them."
Following a demanding opening in which Kerry trailed by 0-5 to 0-1 after eight minutes Keane was satisfied with how his team responded to be level by the interval. "I suppose, look we were there in the first half and were chasing it a bit, we were down at one stage in that first half and got it back to equal at halftime. "The goal, I suppose, wasn’t part of the plan after half time but we worked our way back to two points again. "We had a few chances after that, but I suppose we were stretching it at all times there."
Keane, though, didn't wish to reflect on what might have been following the initial drawn encounter on September 1. "I wouldn't have felt we left it behind, right," Keane added. "I could see the argument. Dean Rock had a chance of kicking a winner at the end of it so had he scored that there would have been no leaving it behind, we'd have lost it. "I suppose with any young team, what did we have we had 11 fellas that started in an All-Ireland for the first time. We had two fellas who came on in that game so that was 13 fellas playing in their first All-Ireland final. So in many ways you'd have said, 'this is great' because you're getting another shot at it, another opportunity to build on it." Report courtsey of Cian O'Connell /GAA

5 IN A ROW
Dublin were crowned All Ireland SFC champions on Saturday last when they won the Sam Maguire cup for a record 5th successive year defeating Kerry 1-18 to 0-15. It was a big disappointment for Kerry considering the hype after the drawn game but this is a very young Kerry team and they will mature into an All Ireland winning team within a few years. Peter Keane did a wonderful job managing this young brigade and getting them to an All Ireland final replay. It was a great day for Jim Gavin winning his sixth title in seven seasons. Kerry lead the way with 37 titles. Dublin have 29 and have bragging rights for five in a row, an honour which so narrowly eluded Kerry in 1982 with the Seamus Darby goal. In 47 championship games under manager Jim Gavin since 2013 Dublin have won 43, drawn three, and lost just one match-the 2014 semi-final to Donegal. Captain Stephen Cluxton has created his own history by leading the Dubs to win six Sam Maguire cups, a feat that is unlikely to be broken.
CHASING THE GAME
Everything went right for Dublin, but full credit to this young Kerry squad who did not give in although they were chasing the game from the throw in. Dublin got off to a great start. In the first five minutes the mounted three attacks which yielded three points and no wide. Over the full game they kicked just four wides to Kerry’s ten. They got no scorable free in the Kerry half and the Kerry backs deserve great credit for defending so well and not conceding any fouls. After eigth minutes Kerry trailed by five points to one but they buckled down and clawed back the deficit. By the fifth minute the Dublin forwards had scored more from play than they managed in the entire drawn game. Paul Geaney was in great form for Kerry and he ended up 4 points. One of these was a screamer and could easily have been a goal. David Clifford showed his class by kicking five points. After 20 minutes Kerry had fought back to trail by a single point, seven points to six and the
teams went in at half time level at 10 points each.
GOAL
The decisive goal was scored 13 seconds in to the second half. From the throw in David Moran opted to break the ball instead of catching it. Dubs' defender Eoin Murchan picked it up and went on a long solo run through the Kerry defence before leashing a powerful shot past Shane Ryan for the only goal in the game. This was a sickening blow for Kerry and they never recovered from it. Murchan was the hero and he wasn’t even on the Dubs' panel for the drawn game. That goal was a great boost for Dublin and made Kerry’s task more difficult. That goal and four points from Kilkenny, O ‘Callaghan, and Mannion secured victory for the Dubs. Kerry’s chief scorers were Geaney, Clifford, and O‘Shea. Kerry needed a goal and the best chance of a goal fell to Stephen O’Brien, but he took the wrong option – Cluxton narrowed the angle and saved well. O'Brien should
"It is disappointing to lose an All Ireland but we can be very proud of this very young team" have sent the ball across the face of the goal where Paul Geaney was unmarked and was screaming for a pass. Brian Fenton upped his game from the drawn game and Dublin won the midfield battle even though Jack Barry tried hard. David Moran put in his usual good shift. Goalkeeper Shane Ryan played well and made great saves and got all of his kick outs to a Kerry player.
REFEREE
Overall Conor Lane did a good job. There was one controversial incident in the 23rd minute. Tadhg Morley was pulled down by Con O’Callaghan just outside the penalty area. I thought it was an obvious black card but he was left off without even a warning. Instead the ref gave a card to Fitzsimons who was an innocent party in the incident. It is disappointing to lose an All Ireland but we can be very proud of this very young team and their excellent manager Peter Keane and selectors. Their day of glory will come when they will lift Sam in the not too distant future.

Tight schedule for County Championship
69
With the All Ireland final done and dusted, attention turns to the County Senior Football Championship. | By Sean Moriarty A hetcic eight-week schedule gets underway tommorrow, Saturday, and come what may, will have to be completed by November 17, the scheduled date for the Munster club semi-final. To be fair to the county board, this issue was highlighted earlier in the year, the drawn All Ireland final not helping the tight timeframe but here in Kerry, the county team gets priority, and rightly so. Fitzgerald Stadium hosts an interesting double header, from a Killarney point of view, on Sunday afternoon. Defending champions Dr Crokes get their title defence underway at 330pm having drawn Rathmore. Earlier the same day Killarney Legion face Kilcummin, the latter side returning to senior football championship action after winning the All Ireland intermedi-
ate title last term. Given the tight timeframe, winners will have to be declared on each of the opening two rounds of the championship so extra time will be played. Round two takes place on the weekend of September 27/28 with round three set for the following weekend. A weekend off (October 11/12) will be filled if any of the round three games require a replay, but that is it as the quarterfinals take place on the weekend of October 19 and 20. A week later, over the course of the October Bank Holiday weekend, is earmarked for the semi finals. This is followed by a two-week break to the final (November 10) but with the Munster quarterfinal set for November 17 there is no room for a replay, as a result the title race will be decided on the second Sunday in November.

Clifford for young Player of the Year Kerry ladies football captain Amanda Brosnan is backing fellow Killarney native David Clifford as the young player of the year. Dr Crokes player Brosnan is also well known as a sports analyst. Speaking earlier this week on the AIB GAA Pod-
cast, she singled out Clifford and his Kerry senior team mate Sean O’Shea as contenders for young players of the year. “Clifford was outstanding [during the season]. When he is running oneon-one on somebody you cannot stop him.,” she said. The awards are usually announced in early November.

A Killarney man will oversee the amalgamation of the two golf governing bodies in Ireland. Mark Kennelly has been appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer of Golf Ireland. Earlier this year a proposal to establish a single governing body for golf in Ireland, to be called Golf Ireland, was approved by the Golf Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies Golf Union. Under the Proposal, it is intended that Golf Ireland will “go live” on 1 January 2021. Prior to taking up the role in December the Killarney native will begin engaging with Golf Ireland from mid-October as CEO Designate on a part-time basis, to facilitate his preparations. “As we enter a new and exciting era for Irish golf, I am delighted to have the opportunity to play my part in the creation and evolution of Golf Ireland. achievements of the GUI and the ILGU, the new single governing body will ensure that golf will continue to grow and flourish on the island of Ireland in the future,” said Kennelly who is a member of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. “I look forward to working closely in the months ahead with the Transition Board, with the officers and staff of the GUI and ILGU, after January 1 2021 with the Board and other structures of Golf Ireland, and with the very many volunteers who are the lifeblood of golf throughout the island to make these plans a reality.” Kennelly was Chief of Staff at the Department of the Taoiseach during the term of Enda Kenny from 2011 to 2017.

Lakers face Limerick Celts in season opener | By Eamonn Keogh
Scotts Lakers prepared for their Division One (Southern Conference) National Basketball League campaign by taking on Super League Champions Tralee Warriors in a pre-season friendly. The Killarney side finished second in last year’s title race. Their league campaign gets underway tomorrow (Saturday) night against Limerick Celts in Limerick. The corresponding fixture least season was won Killarney on a score-line of 9791. Lakers first home game of the season is set for next Saturday night (September 28) against Carlow IT. However the season proper won’t get underway until the first Sunday in October when Lakers travel to Cork to take on defending champions and current cup champions are the benchmark if the local side wants to realize its ambitions and potential to top the table. Last week’s pre-season friendly against
Tralee provided Lakers with the perfect opportunity to try new players. New American signing for Scotts Lakers Aaron Jackson made an instant impression from an early stage and looks like being a very exciting addition to the Killarney challenge this season. He scored all 18 points of the Lakers first quarter total as they trailed Tralee 26-18 after the first period. Warriors interchanged their Americans Keith Jumper and Jonathan Lawton to great effect while European players Daniel Jokubaitis and Ivan Bogdanovic also impressed and Tralee led 51-40 at half-time. Scotts Lakers responded well with Jackson leading the way and the Killarney side were 54-53 in front after three min-
utes of the second half. It was closely contested before Warriors pulled away through Jumper, Bogdanovic and Paul Dick to lead 69-60 entering the final quarter. Warriors stayed in front throughout the closing period and enjoyed a 14 point win in the end. Lakers coach Shane McCarthy ran his full bench with young players Jamie O'Sullivan and Jack Corridan gaining valuable experience. Jackson was the outsanding player for the home side hitting 38 points including seven three-pointers. Victor Martínez , Andrew Fitzgerald, Carlton Cuff and Seamus Brosnan also did well against a star studded Tralee line-up that look strong candidates to retain their superleague title. Amazingly the Lakers missed a whooping 23 free throws sinking 14 from 37 attempts. It was a lot of potential points to miss out on despite hitting ten
three-pointers in total. The Warriors sank 11 three-pointers and have exceptional strength in depth and had excellent performances from their four foreign players while their six Irish players all posed a threat.

C lare Rally round-up
Killarney and District Motor Club’s Daniel Cronin was the best of the local crews on last Sunday’s Clare Rally. Persistent drizzle made the going very difficult for the 100 or so crews that started the nine-stage Ennis-based event. Cronin, the event winner two years ago, placed a late entry of the rally on Thursday evening and mastered the difficult conditions in his Ford Fiesta R5 to finish second overall, just 15 seconds behind event winner Roy White in a Fiesta World Rally Car. Denis Hickey and Sean Nolan (Glenflesk) finished third in class 14 in their Escort. They were 25th overall, just one place ahead of Lisselton’s Pat Barry and Kevin Tydings in another Escort.
Belgium Rallying
In a cruel twist of fate, KDMC members Jack Newman and Barry Meade were forced to retire from the Ford Escort Rally Special in Belgium over the weekend while on-course for a certain podium finish. Newman from County Meath and Meade from Kanturk were lying second overall entering the final stage. A water splash on the stage damaged the car’s electrics and it stopped on the test, forcing instant retirement. Both are former winners of the national section of either the Rally of the Lakes and the Historic Rally and are long time members of the local club. Meade is better known as a driver but made the rare switch to the passenger seat this weekend.

With most players playing their first game at this level they made a dominant start to the game without converting their chances to goals. With 15 minutes gone Cillian O’Donoghue swept in a free kick and it was deflected to the net by a Celtic defender. After this further chances fell to Fionn Kennedy, Caylem Cummins and Killian Fitzgerald but the Celtic defence held out, until a clever finish from Cillian O’Donoghue made the Score 2-0, after this Celtic started to create chances of their own and only for the alertness of Sean Clifford in goal kept the Celtic attack out. The halftime score was 2-0. The second half started in a similar vain to the first but this time Celtic managed to pull a goal back when the MEK Galaxy defence were unable to clear a ball and Celtic converted to bring themselves back into the game. Chances were now coming thick and

fast with both sides making a number of changes with players starting to tire, it was MEK to the fore in this period with Danny Murphy surging forward and firing home and Fionn Kennedy blasting to the net after a delightful through ball from James O Meara, to put the score at 4-1. Celtic again pulled a goal back capitalising on hesitation in the MEK defence to leave the final score at 4-2 to MEK Galaxy. Man of the Match was James Spillane who made this week’s team of the week.
