Anger as fans prevented from attending matches
Local GAA clubs have reacted with shock and disappointment following the Government’s decision to ban spectators from matches until at least September 13.
Football fans who are now prevented from attending their club’s 2020 Garvey’s Senior Football Championship opening round matches have been given some consolation as three out of four matches involving Killarney teams will be shown live on various platforms. championships," Michael added. Legion Chairman Fergal Moynihan told the Killarney Advertiser that “it is a big blow for people". “For club games it is a family thing, parents, partners, children want to go and support their players and it is the main part for them to be physically there. It was very difficult on club secretaries who had to turn people away and it was hoped that the increase to 500 would take the pressure off – it is gone the other way.” GAA clubs in Killarney say this is unfair after they followed all guidelines in place since June 29. These included the extra work load of ticket issuing and the management of same. They are also baffled by the decision as there is no evidence that fans who attended matches since June 29 are contributing to the virus spread. “Club fixtures are going to be very important this year,” Fergal added. “It is still emerging what is going to happen. The chances of inter-county games seem slim
right now and the club championship will become even more important." Clubs have warned too that they face financial difficulties in the future. The lack of spectators attending matches is having a negative impact on club’s balance sheets, Lotto income is reduced too due to pub closures but expenditure is increased due to new COVID-19 safety protocols. “There won’t be a single club in the county that will be impacted by this,” added Fergal. “Even the County Board will be impacted.” Policing the new rules will be difficult too. “Clubs are working hard to keep all players training and involved in games. If parents alone can attend games the impact of this decision may not be as severe," added Michael. "We can’t see any club turning people away from a gate at a club game at any level. The clubs will be expecting those same people to support their Lotto and other events.”

| By Sean Moriarty Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced a range of new measures on Tuesday in an effort to contain the second spread of COVID-19. One of the biggest restrictions is the complete banning of spectators from all sporting events. This came as a huge blow to local GAA clubs. The 2020 Garvey’s Senior Football Championship gets underway this weekend. “The general view is that Government took the soft option having failed to agree on more unpopular decisions,” Spa GAA Club Chairman Michael Cronin said. “People are fairly fed up both with the Government and even the GAA itself as people paid up full membership and the club paid full insurance, but the club was closed for four months and people are still unable to see games.” It was hoped that the number of attendees at games would increase from the previously allowed 200 people to 500 but Tuesday’s decision went the opposite way. “We are very disappointed with the decision. Totally unexpected. We were expecting the exact opposite. People were looking forward to seeing County Championship and quarter finals of the club
Live TV coverage for county GAA championship
To celebrate, the popular East Avenue venue will show several films that feature local Hollywood stars. These include Jesse Buckley’s ‘Miss Behaviour’, and ‘Calm With Horses’ which was produced by Michael Fassbender. Both will be shown at 8pm tonight and tomorrow (Saturday) respectively.
Buckley’s 'Miss Behaviour', a comedy spoof on the Miss World competition, will be one of the first movies screened at Killarney Cinema in over five months. Fassbender's ‘Calm With Horses’, a gangster movie set in the west of Ireland, will be screened at 8pm. New rules mean each cinema is limited to 50 patrons and all ticket sales must be made online and ahead of time for contact tracing purposes. “If there is demand I will do more of these kind of [local] nights,” owner Tommy Cooper told the Killarney Advertiser.
The 2020 Garvey’s Senior Football Championship gets underway this evening (Friday) when Dr Crokes take on Austin Stacks in Austin Stack Park in Tralee, and that match will be broadcast on TG4 from 7.30pm. On Saturday, Kilcummin face Mid-Kerry at Fitzgerald Stadium at 3pm and this match will be shown live on the Kerry GAA website in pay-per-view for €5 per game format that follows recent matches. Killarney Legion’s match against Tralee side Kerins O'Rahillys will be broadcast live on RTÉ at 3.45pm from Fitzgerald Stadium. The national broadcaster has taken an increased interest in County Championship matches and this is the third time in recent years that a Legion match has been covered by RTÉ. Broadcasting legend Marty Morrissey will provide the commentary. Legion Chairman Fergal Moynihan said that while he welcomed the TV coverage he would still prefer to have the club’s supporters at the venue. “It is a great honour for the club,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a good thing for the wrong reasons.” In a strange move, defending champions East Kerry’s tie with Feale Rangers in Listowel on Sunday evening will not be shown live on any platform. All matches will have to produce a winner on the day and extra time will be played. In a straight knock-out, the winners of this weekend games go forward to the County quarter finals with no second chance ‘back door’ system in place this year due to the late start to the season. All match programmes will be available to download from the Kerry GAA website and Radio Kerry will also provide regular updates of all games.

Killarney extends VIP welcome to COVID carer It is a holiday they’ll never forget with VIP treatment over the weekend as Killarney locals generously extended their kindness to a compassionate COVID carer who featured on RTÉ. | By Michelle Crean
EXCLUSIVE
In June, during the height of the health crisis, hearts across the country broke as viewers of RTÉ ONE’s ‘Inside Ireland’s COVID Battle’ watched kind-hearted Dublin lady Lisa Connolly care for a 97-year-old patient named Patrick, as he lost his battle with COVID-19. With no family close by to care for him, his support worker Lisa regularly visited him in St James’ Hospital. And after he passed away, she even went into the hospital room to hold his hand as she sang ‘The Irish Lullaby’ to him and bent down and kissed him on the forehead through her mask despite the risks to her own life. Moved by Lisa’s selflessness, local guesthouse owner Ciara Roche who runs Killaran House on Park Road reached out to her and offered Lisa and family a three night stay for free as a
thank you for being so kind. On Friday last, Lisa, her mom Tina and sisters Ciara and Jessica were thrilled when they arrived in Killarney and were treated like VIPs. What’s more is that many local businesses also offered their services for free including Danny O’Sullivan from Killarney Hackney Cabs who made himself available as their personal chauffeur and said he “was glad to help”. On Friday, the ladies had their hair and shellac nails done by Elegant Styles followed by dinner at Killeen House Hotel and Rozzers Restaurant. The next day it was a facial for Lisa at What Women Want and fun for the family at Escape Killarney which they said was “absolutely brilliant”, and lunch in the Eviston House Hotel. On Sunday they enjoyed a carvery lunch and then a trip to Ross Castle with Jarvey John Kearney. Lisa also received a

Lisa also received a gift of a printed image of Killarney by local photographer Peter O’Toole which was framed by the Killarney Printer. “I was so delighted to finally welcome Lisa, her sisters Ciara and Jessica and her mum Tina to Killaran House for their three night staycation,” Ciara told the Killarney Advertiser. “They are a fab bunch of girls. At first it was kind of emotional. A lovely gentleman called in as soon as the girls arrived and they hugged. He gave her an envelope and he cried. It was heart wrenching - she really did touch people.” Ciara said over the weekend it was

The estate also provides local access to Killarney Legion and Killarney Celtic pitches adding to the traffic volumes in the estate. “We have been fighting for this for eight years,” the association’s spokesperson Liam Grimes told the Killarney Advertiser. “Maybe when this was first built around 2005 it was suitable for the level of traffic, but the estate has grown and it is time to take this into consideration. We are all aware of the fatal accident in July and the ongoing issues with the bypass and Madam’s Hill junction and they are all connected.” Wednesday night's meeting was attended by local TDs Michael and Danny Healy-Rae,Cllr Maura Healy-Rae,Cllr Pa Daly as well as elected members of Killarney Municipal District including Mayor Brendan Cronin, Cllr Marie Moloney and Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan. Plans for the association's deputation to Kerry County Council will be on the agenda for next month’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. If it's passed the deputation is likely to take place ahead of the November KMD meeting.

Cardiac unit says thank you This week Killarney Cardiac Response Unit (KCRU) have issued a heartfelt thank you to the public who support their fundraiser by buying their handmade reusable face masks. | By Michelle Crean Despite not being able to actively respond to emergency calls during COVID-19 to keep their volunteers safe, they instead opted to produce reusable face masks to help defeat the spread of the virus. This week they're saying a huge thanks to those who have supported them as money raised was for the air ambulance and KCRU. These face masks made entirely by the cardiac response volunteers were re-
usable, washable and ensured the disposable clinical type face masks are reserved for those on the frontline, Carole Moran, PRO of KCRU told the Killarney Advertiser. "We all felt as a unit that despite not actively responding to emergency calls during COVID-19 that we had a role to play in assisting the local community. Whilst our community support service and expansion of public access AED were our key priorities, the creation of face masks as a fundraiser for the air ambulance and KCRU was a way to
engage our members, supply an in demand product and support life-saving services. We would like to express our thanks to all those who supported this cause." KCRU was established in 2015 and the units volunteer team have responded to in excess of 800 emergency calls. They respond to 999/112 calls on behalf of and in conjunction with the National Ambulance Service have during COVID-19 refocused on community support, public access AED and spreading advice within the community through its social media platforms. The group will continue to be available for community support as needed and can be contacted at 064 66 94144.

Finish line is sight for Killarney Micro Track | By Sean Moriarty The team behind Killarney’s new micro track are asking the people to remain patient as they prepare for the track’s official opening. Construction is all but finished at the New Road amenity, perimeter fencing and goalposts were due to be installed this week and Moloney Construction are in the process of completing tasks on the snag list – a normal process in any building project. It was hoped that the facility would be
officially opened next month and that it would be possible to allow sports clubs and individuals to pre-book slots at the track which also boasts an astro-pitch and a basketball court. The track’s floodlights were successfully tested on Monday. However, new COVID-19 regulations have thrown their plans into disarray. With the situation changing every day they have been forced to delay plans until they get a better idea on how they might be able to accommodate and manage large groups. Plans for an official opening, which was
to include a list of big name Irish athletes, have been put on hold. Officials are also waiting on Department of Education guidelines as the facility was always going to be made available to local schools free of charge. “Bear with us,” fundraiser Jerry Griffin told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are a group of volunteers and without the work of these volunteers there is no way we would be where we are today. This facility will be open to every club in Killarney but we are trying to set up a proper booking system – we don’t have a receptionist waiting at the other end of the phone – and all that is up the air with the virus. Please be patient with us, delaying the opening is the sensible thing to do.” Fundraising for the €140,000 project remains on-going via Killarney Micro Track’s GoFundMe page.
Town changes are temporary Council says
EXCLUSIVE

| By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that the current pedestrian arrangements in the town centre are temporary. In early July, footpaths in the Killarney town centre were widened to allow for greater social distancing on the town’s narrow streets. The move angered traders and resulted in the loss of around 50 off-street car parking slots. Additionally, Plunkett St is closed to all vehicular traffic and will remain so until September 2 when it will revert back to a pedestrianised street between 7pm and 7am every day. In last week’s issue Cllr Donal Grady raised concerns that the current street plan was a covert way to introduce fulltime pedestrianisation without firstly going through the proper consultation procedures. Kerry County Council has responded to the veteran councillor’s stance and confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that the current situation is indeed temporary. “It has been outlined to the [elected] members on a number of occasions that these are temporary arrangements to comply with social distancing and public health guidelines, ensuring that there is enough space on the footpaths and streets for people to pass each other, and in order to allow people to feel comfortable to come to Killarney and other towns in Kerry, in the knowledge that these works have been put in place,” a Council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is particularly important during the summer period, and as we have been fortunate to see an increase in the number of visitors to Kerry, and in particular in Killarney over the summer months.”
TESTING: Lights on, but Killarney Micro Track will have to wait a little longer for action.

Killarney publican behind nationwide campaign | By Sean Moriarty
A Killarney publican was behind a nationwide social media campaign that highlighted issues being faced by rural pubs who are not allowed open during current COVID-19 restrictions. Last weekend publicans from all over Kerry and beyond took to social media with their campaign 'Support Not Sympathy' to get their message across. As of today (Friday) it is 156 days since March 15, they day pubs were told to close. And publicans say their appeal to Government is far from over with further plans to increase the pressure this week - instead of photographing family members or customers outside their pubs - they will now show a sign highlighting the number of days they have been forced to close. They are growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of Government support and action a pubs have been closed since March 15. Those who don't serve food have to remain closed for now while bars that sell a ‘substantial meal’ have been allowed open since June 29. The Kerry Vintners Association has been particularly vocal on the situation. They wanted to have one voice on social media platforms so set up an online group called 'The Pubs of Kerry' and the new social media campaign was the brainchild of publican John C O’ Shea whose family run the Jack C’s on High St. The campaign, which quickly spread from Kerry to include pubs in every
county, was calling on the Government to offer support to rural pubs. Publicans and their families were photographed outside their closed premises, which was then shared on social platforms and tagged prominent politicians. It was a direct attack on comments made by Tánaiste Leo Varadkar last week that he was is “sympathetic” to the difficulties publicans faced. The campaign was popular on Facebook but gained more traction on Twitter. “I have experience in running such campaigns,” John C told the Killarney Advertiser. “Some pubs have a Facebook account, some have a Twitter account and some have neither. They sent their photos to me and uploaded them to social media. Twitter is the preferred communication channel of Government. It was a dignified protest but sometime I wonder of the farmers are right – they would have the whole of Dublin city centre blockaded by now.” He added that publicans can open their bars safely and should be allowed to do so. "We have spent €12k to €15k preparing our bar – we have the Perspex, we have an outdoor seating area in the lane,” he added. “The only reason we have to stay closed is that we do not do food. We would have to spend another €15k on a proper kitchen and take on more staff. We have never done food. We get a lot of trade from Gaby’s and Bricín across the road. People come to us before or after their meal in the place that does do food.”

This week journalist with the Killarney Advertiser Sean Moriarty is 'In Conversation' with Killarney singer-songwriter Karrie O’Sullivan who will release her new album ‘Home Thoughts’ next week.
Ballyhar singersongwriter to launch new album | By Sean Moriarty Killarney singer-songwriter Karrie O’Sullivan will release her new album ‘Home Thoughts’ next week after being inspired by the success of her social media gigs during lockdown. At that time she worked with her producer and guitarist Jimmy Smyth on a series of covers by stars like Rod Stewart and Elton John which were broadcast on her social media channels. The online experiment was so successful that they reached over 250,000 people, so they decided to go all out and record an album. “[The social media] performance alleviated people from their boredom during lockdown,” Karrie told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am forever grateful to those who tuned in, shared and liked as they provided the inspiration to release the album. From that point it has already been a success.” However, recording an album in these socially challenging times is not easy with
safely guidelines to follow as two artists go into a small recording studio to work together. Each song was recorded remotely, with Karrie recording on her iPhone in Ballyhar and Jimmy with his guitar and banjo in his studio in Dublin. “The iPhone is known for its quality microphone,” she said. “The sound engineer was able to tell me the make and model of my phone.” 'Home Thoughts', which will be on released on August 28, will feature new
versions of classic songs such as David Bowie’s ‘Life on Mars’ and James Taylor’s ‘Carolina in My Mind’. “The Facebook music helped people all over the world when they were at home bored,” she added. "'Life on Mars’ had over 120k views, and one lady contacted me from New York. It was played at her friend’s funeral after her friend specifically asked for my cover.” In the past Karrie has had three top five singles in Ireland, she has toured with the likes of Declan O'Rourke, Mick Flannery, Mary Coughlan and Rumer. Indeed Flannery is her nephew, the son of her late sister Elaine. Coughlan recorded one of Karrie’s selfpenned songs ‘Elbow Deep’, while fellow musician Sharon Shannon has called her
the Irish Joni Mitchell. “That was a great compliment from Sharon. You would have to ask her why she said that," Karrie added. “I am a huge Joni Mitchell fan and Sharon asked me to sing one her songs one night and that is where that came from.” She is also working with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. They liked her version of ‘Life on Mars’ and that is set to be released as a single in the coming weeks. “There are talks of a potential show too,” she added. “But everything is loop-theloop still.” She also trains horses. “I break horses,” she explained. “I have competed in showjumping and still break racehorses on our family farms in Ballyhar and Castleisland.”

Crowds flocked to the new Liebherr car park at Lackabane, Fossa to try their luck from their cars and had a great time. The event, which raised €7,000 after costs, was organised by St Paul's Basketball Club as a COVID compliant fundraiser for the club as their regular activities to raise money are halted due to restrictions this year. "It was brilliant, we were delighted with it," Padraig Wheldon from St Paul's Basketball Club told the Killarney Advertiser. "It surpassed all our expectations." Well-known personality Cllr Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan was MC on the night which
went down a treat. "He was full of entertainment. He went down very well with people. Everyone had a great time." And Padraig added that the event wouldn't have been such a success without the huge voluntary effort from locals. "We had club members and a lot of people from outside the club who helped with traffic management and other duties. It was all down to the volunteers. Everyone roped in and it made it a great success." He added that it's the first event they ever ran like that - but it won't be their last. 'It was a great social event for people especially the older demographic. We've earmarked September 20 for the next one depending on Government guidelines at the time and the venue is to be announced."

"Each day we walk into the woods together with lots of ideas of what we can play and create," Kerry Walker from The Nature Hub told the Killarney Advertiser. "The leader brings plans and ideas for each session, but the children are given the space to lead and bring their own ideas. It is through their imaginations and creativity, that the sessions are formed. We begin each day by greeting our Grandpa Tree, the children named him “Grandpa Bob”. This is such an important part of the session as we stop, we greet the tree, and we ask for permission to play in his woods. We discuss the importance of leaving the woods as we found it, and how other animals and creatures live here so we need to be mindful of them all. We even started to bring Grandpa Bob gifts, wishes and great big hugs!" Once they get into the woods, they gather in a circle to share their nature names. "This is a great time to check in, and see
how everyone is. We also discuss ideas of what we could do and then start off with an energetic game to get us all moving!" Then there is time for child-led play, she added. "We decide where we want to put up the rope swing, what trees are best to hang the hammocks, and where to put up the tightropes. Importance is given to follow the childs' lead and pace. Some of the things we get up to are bug hunts, den building, tool use, nature crafts and stories. During one session a child said she would like to pretend she was in the circus. So we discussed how we could do that, and we ended up making a trapeze from the trees. We called it the Woodland Circus!" She said that she ends the camp by gathering in circle and discussing what they could do for the following day. "We then walk to Grandpa Bob, thank him and say goodbye." Forest School sessions will now be ongoing in Milltown. Forest Birthday parties are available, Family Forest Days, and after school sessions will commence on September 15. The team behind the Listry Meals On Wheels Service was honoured at the recent Annual General Meeting of Listry Community Council. At the height of the lockdown the popular community service faced being grounded at a time it was needed the most. Listry Community Council has been running the service for the last 10 years and each Monday, Wednesday and Friday they deliver meals to around 20 vulnerable households in the area. The service was mainly operated by retired locals but when they were asked to cocoon during the early phases of the national shutdown it was feared that the service would not be able to continue. However, since many other locals found themselves out of work at the same time,

they stepped in to fill the gap. The service continued uninterrupted throughout lockdown, even the local pub, The Faha Court, donated its ‘Social Spin’ car to the service’s efforts. The O'Shea Award is presented by the Listry Community Council to people or organisations who have made an outstanding service to the local community. The award is dedicated to the family who donated lands to build a national school in the area. “So many people responded to our appeals to find drivers and kept the service going,” Council Chair Tony Darmody told the Killarney Advertiser. “The award is dedicated to them and all our drivers over the last 10 years.” Cathriona Doody O'Connor received the award on behalf of Meals On wheels Service on the night.

Jewel in the crown for Killarney Celtic
It was certainly a case of the jewel in the crown for Kerry soccer kingpins Killarney Celtic when they clinched the prestigious Munster League Champions title with a great victory over fancied Limerick side Rathkeale. And they added a little extra sparkle to their great success on Saturday when the players and management showed off their own piece of silverware when they visited Keane’s Jewellers in Killarney who sponsor the provincial competition. Store manager Paul Trant and his staff were delighted to join in the celebrations and congratulate Celtic manager Brian Spillane and the club on their great run of success at a domestic, provincial and national level. The Munster League Champions competition has been sponsored by Keane’s Jewellers since it first commenced in the
2011/2012 season and, in fact, Killarney Celtic were also the winners that year. The only other clubs to win the cup on two occasions are Limerick side Janesboro and St Michael’s FC from Tipperary. Brian Spillane, who also led Celtic to the league and cup double in Kerry last season, said it was a great honour to win the trophy as a player in 2012 and as manager eight years later. “To go toe-to-toe with the finest teams in Munster is a dream come true,” said Brian, who thanked Paul Trant and his staff at Keane’s Jewellers for continuing to sponsor the competition and for promoting junior soccer in Munster.

From closure to a new premises and new beginning
As Leo Vardarkar announced the unprecedented countrywide lockdown in March to help the country get to grips with the global pandemic - local businesswoman Anita Doona watched her successful business slip away with each passing word. | By Michelle Crean For the past four years, Anita from Beaufort, built up a strong client base in her Main St premises - and like most others in business - never saw the COVID closure coming. However, it's a story of self resilience and rejuvenation as Anita, who had no option but to close her Main St salon due to the lack of space to accommodate the new safety measures of two metres - has reopened on High St bigger than before and with a new beauty service. Rebranded as Nails and Beauty by Anita
- she now offers a beauty service as, coincidentally before lockdown she went back to college to train in beauty which she's now delighted to be able to offer her clients. "It was devastating when I closed on March 14," Anita told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "I knew I wasn't going to be reopening again and I did fear for my business. My Main St premises was very small and I spent a month or two worrying what to do and was in limbo." Then, as the country began easing restrictions and with just weeks to go before beauty services could reopen, Anita was

fortunate to come across a premises in High St. With three rooms, she now offers a nail service in one including mini and full manicures, shellac nails, and deluxe pedicures, the second for beauty treatments including eye lash and brow treatments, to facials and body waxing. The third room she plans to rent to someone offering an alternative beauty service. She has a number of sanitisers inside the door and in the rooms, stickers advising social distancing, and wears a face shield when dealing one to one with customers, as well as a Perspex screen on the nail table.
"Luckily I found the High St premises and have everything set up. I reopened July 8 and had eight to 10 days to get this place ready. I'm settling in and the business has been going very well. I'm really lucky. The location is great, the neighbours are great and people have been so nice and welcoming to the street." “Our locals and staycationers are keeping our business going this summer” Due to the global pandemic Muckross House, Garden Restaurant and Craft Centre closed their doors to the public on Monday March 16. | By Michelle Crean The initial plan was to close for two weeks for the safety of staff and visitors. However, Muckross Garden Restaurant and Craft Centre didn’t reopen its doors until June 29, three and half months later. Muckross Traditional Farms reopened for the season on July 1, however due to COVID-19 restrictions the farms opened as a limited experience. Following Government social distancing guidelines, they were unable to open the 1930s cottages and pet farm, for this reason the farms are free of charge for visitors

The House has reopened as a self-guided tour due COVID-19 restrictions. "We have been able to recover some losses through the locals and staycationers visiting, however we miss the revenue from the overseas tourists, especially those from the US. We are very lucky we are busy with those visiting from Kerry and nationwide, however it’s nowhere near as consistently active as a typical summer. We have invested heavily in safety measures across all areas of the business to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors while also ensuring the safety of our staff." The show must go on as cinema reopens Killarney Cinema is set to welcome visitors for the first since March 12 as it reopens under very strict regulations. The East Avenue venue had to wait until Tuesday’s Government announcement to see if it could reopen. Theatres and cinemas have been given permission to open once they don’t exceed a 50-person limit.
Tommy Copper, who runs Killarney Cinema, says he and his team are ready to reopen later today (Friday), but asked movie fans to be patient and follow a few simple guidelines to make the experience easy for everyone. The main change is that the box office will remain closed and patrons must prebook their tickets online. This will help cinema management pre-allocate seats
and allow them to conform with contact tracing regulations. “Gone is the day when you can rock up and buy a ticket at the door,” Mr Copper told the Killarney Advertiser. A one-way system will be in place once inside the cinema, show times are staggered to avoid congestion, and patrons will leave each theatre via the old fire exit doors rather return to the foyer to exit.

WEDDING
Luke and Máiread have a wonderful wedding It was better than a day out at the All-Ireland or even the world Irish dance championships for one local couple who altered their plans and enjoyed a small intimate family wedding last Friday (August 14).
WEDDING OF THE WEEK
24
Originally set for a big traditional Irish wedding in Doolin Co Clare in July - COVID restrictions meant that everything had to change including the date and restricting numbers down to just 50 for Luke Quinn and Máiread Mangan. However, it didn't matter how many were there as Luke and Máiread only had eyes for each other in St Mary's Cathedral as celebrant Fr Kieran O'Brien announced them husband and wife in front of their closest family and friends. Luke, son of John and the late Ina Quinn, is originally from Ross Road and works as manager of the Kerry GAA Store in the Outlet Centre. He met dance teacher Máiread who runs Mangan School of Dance and is currently working in the HSE, almost five years ago. In March 2017 they got engaged and began planning their nuptials including a large bridal party of five bridesmaids and a best man, four groomsmen and a flowergirl. And, although their plans meant a more intimate gathering, they continued with their original bridal party plan and Luke, a former star player with Dr Crokes GAA and now a member of their senior management team, said they were "delighted with how it all worked out". "We had a great time." Bridesmaids were Máiread's sister Triona Uí Laoithe, her friend Aoife Leahy,
and her cousins Juliette Murphy, Mags Cronin and Sinéad Cronin. Best Man was Luke's friend Kieran O'Leary, and groomsmen were his friends Andrew Kenneally, Mike Moloney, Brian Looney and Tommy Ryan. Triona's daughter, Máiread's godchild and niece, Réidín Ní Laoithe (4) was like a princess for the day as she enjoyed her flowergirl duties. Luke's mom Ina was remembered throughout the day as the couple lit a candle in her honour and she was mentioned in the speeches. After photos with photographer Stephen O'Donoghue, the couple enjoyed a reception at Máiread's parent's home, Ann and Gerard Mangan, in Woodline, Kilbrean. "We had a marquee at Máiread's parent's house," Luke told the Killarney Advertiser. "We brought in a caterer from Kingdom Kitchens in Tralee. We're delighted with how it all worked out. It was different to a normal wedding but everything worked out fine." The night was finished off with traditional Irish music, singing, dancing and great craic as Triona's husband Sean, who is a musician, provided hours of entertainment. Winding down after such a hectic run up to the wedding day, the couple this week took some time out to enjoy a honeymoon in Powerscourt Hotel in Dublin.

Golfers enjoy prize giving day in Beaufort Last week, nestled under Ireland's highest mountain, Beaufort Golf Club set the scene for a fabulous day for their Lady Captain and Captain's prize day. A full time sheet from 7am ran all day and lead to a massive turnout for both captains. The weather was spectacular and that
certainly helped all the golfers have a most enjoyable round. The course was in excellent condition, with some of the pin positions making it a difficult exercise for all the golfers. Chili challenge to help charitable cause | By Michelle Crean This weekend a very unique challenge is being put to the public all to benefit a good cause. The Chili Cauli Cup Challenge is being run by the team at the Real Burger Killorglin and it promises to be hot! The idea is to get customers to try the challenge to see if they can eat the chili dish - and all proceeds will go towards local man TJ O'Connor's 54321 Challenge. Chef Mohammad Anzy saw fellow chef
Chad Byrne raising much need funds for one of TJ's chosen charities the Skellig Stars, and asked how he could help out. "He has created a heat seeking missile of Chili and cauliflower," Chad explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "With TJ doing his challenge we said we would challenge the people of Kerry to come out and try our dish of crispy cauliflower with hot sauce!" If you're up for the challenge this weekend then go to the Real Burger or indeed have it in O'Sheas Pub Killorglin, he add-
out extremely well, explained Laura Furlong, Vice-Captain of Beaufort Golf Club. "Beaufort Golf Club's Lady Captain Karen Spence did an excellent job all day and did an outstanding prize giving in the evening," she said. "Karen had gone to great effort with her prizes. With COVID-19 affecting our lives so much, Karen had chosen
the theme of 'Time' for her prizes. She had also used the fact that Beaufort Golf Club was 25-years-old in April, so she had a silver theme carried through her excellent array of prizes of time. Captain Ken West, also had a beautiful display of prizes and was delighted with the turnout, and also did an excellent prize giving. A heartiest congratulations to all the prize winners."

The 54321 Challenge was due to begin yesterday (Thursday). However, due to the arrival of Storm Ellen, in the interest of safety of volunteers they had to make changes to the start of the challenge this year. They began with the Day 4 Challenge yesterday instead with a 70km cycle indoors on turbo trainers by participants and will continue with the rest of their adventures over the coming days to raise funds for this year's charities Kerry Hospice Foundation, Skellig Stars and Enable Ireland Kerry. These last few very wet weeks are giving me a distinctly autumnal feel. Many hanging baskets and annuals are well past their best, and in the flower borders many of the taller perennials are not coping with the downpours. It is because of this weather, which we do seem to have often, that I have taken to planting foliage plants in any gaps which arise in my flower garden. Foliage can provide wonderful colour, texture and interest. When herbaceous plants are flowering, foliage can also enhance the blooms. Often, the greatest feature of foliage will be contrast. Large leaves provide a canvas against which small flowers can look their best. Silver foliage will create a tranquil contrast to fiery reds. Dark foliage will make bright yellows pop. Feathery grasses will soften large, striking flowers.
SOME EXAMPLES TO CONSIDER:
Hostas - Large leaves usually variegated, which are beautiful as a contrast to plants whose foliage is insignificant, such as achillea, penstemon or rudbeckias. They remain low, but add interest and substance to the lower levels, while the flowers are not impaired in any way. Rodgersia ‘Chocolate Wings ‘ – horse chestnut shaped, sturdy, maroon leaves. Effective as a backdrop for red salvias, or yellow rudbeckias. The dark leaves are also lovely with other, brightly coloured foliage, or the pale yellow of Coreopsis Moonbeam. Salvia argenteum is an unusual plant with soft, hairy, very large, silver leaves. It is ideal planted under the purples of Verbena bonariensis, delphinium or alliums. It is also very effective mixed with soft grasses. Alchemilla (lady's mantle), with its lime green foliage and flowers bringing out
colourful roses – this is a classic plant to combine with pink roses. Grasses such as Pennisetum and Stipa also provide an interesting backdrop in the flower garden, adding softness to spiky flowers such as Gladioli, digitales (foxglove), delphinium (larkspur) and aconitum (monkshood). When I started my own garden I was very greedy and excited whenever I saw a plant I liked, I had to have it – especially flowers. The result was, and I know I am not alone in this – that my garden looked messy, busy and unplanned. I have taken myself in hand, along with the flower borders, and imposed some restrictions! Foliage plants are going a long way towards adding structure to the borders. With structure comes a sense of calm. The riot of plants I had, were all lovely in their own way, but together it was chaos. So, as I said earlier, as gaps appeared I put in a suitable non-flowering plant. This creates a more restful whole – the eyes are not trying to take in everything at once! This will also enhance your pots. By putting trailing foliage plants such as nepeta or lysimachia (creeping jenny) into your hanging baskets, you will create an interesting break to the flowers. In a cluster of pots, a few feature plants such as ferns, grasses or aralia, you will create a contrast so flowers will be more appreciated. The advantages of foliage plants are really too many to mention in a short article, but among the many, I should reiterate that they will not let you down in a wet summer, they will add to your display in many ways, and most are evergreen, giving you interest in winter too.

Awards to recognise exceptional volunteers Volunteer Ireland (VI) plans to recognise Ireland's most caring and dedicated volunteers in what has been an exceptional year of kindness. From now until October 1, VI are calling on the public to nominate exceptional volunteers deserving of the honour and recognition of the national volunteering awards. One outstanding nominee will be named Christine Buckley Volunteer of the Year in December. Volunteer Ireland is the national volunteer development organisation and a support body for all local Volunteer Centres and Volunteering Information Services in Ireland. Anyone can nominate a volunteer, and the 12 categories are: Arts, Culture & Festivals, Campaigning & Activism, Children & Youth, Environmental & Animal Care, Health & Well-being, Safety & Emergency Services, Social Inclusion & Community Support, Sports & Recreations, COVID-19, Small Group (3-20 volunteers), Large Group (20+ volunteers) and Volunteer Manager. “We have an incomparable culture of volunteering here in Ireland and this year has proved that more than ever," Volunteer Ireland CEO Nina Arwitz said. "Thousands of people across the country put up their hands to help their commu-

Volunteers have been at the heart of our response to this pandemic and we are forever in their debt.” She added that while this has been an exceptional year, people all over Ireland give their time all year round for great causes that otherwise might not survive without their help. "These awards are our opportunity to recognise the immense contribution volunteers make to our communities and show them that they are truly appreciated.” Three awardees will be selected in each

of the 12 categories and one person will be named Ireland’s Volunteer of The Year. This year also sees the introduction of a special COVID-19 category to recognise the extraordinary contribution of volunteers throughout the pandemic. Every nominee will receive a special thank you card from Volunteer Ireland. In order to avoid a large gathering, awardees will be celebrated with a special delivery at their home or in their place of volunteering, where they will be cheered on and celebrated by a small group of their family, friends and fellow volunteers. Nominations can be made online at www.volunteer.ie.
Bob Sportal of Prinsburg originally paid the same amount 44 years ago when he bought it from John VanDerVeen. Sportal was in his early 20s when he bought the rusty pickup from a retiring farmer. Every day for the past four decades he drove it to work at the local grain elevator until he retired five years ago. However, he has since parted ways with the truck and was happy to sell it to Tom Leenstra, grandson of the original owner, for the same original price he paid for it. “It’s like riding with my Grandpa again,” Leenstra said. The truck has taken on antique value, but Sportal decided to sell it for what he paid for it. “It’s going in the family, so that’s the most important thing,” Sportal said.
Trump Corner set to continue for another eight years! This popular Killarney Advertiser column could continue until 2028 if President Trump has his way. Trump has said he will seek a third term in office after claiming the rival Democrat party spied on his 2016 election bid. A president is limited to being elected two times for a total of eight years according to the US Constitution. Trump made the claim at the political rally in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on
Monday. "We are going to win four more years. And then after that, we'll go for another four years, because, you know what, they spied on my campaign. We should get a redo," he told the rally. The FBI, in a previous investigation, refuted all allegations of spying during the 2016 campaign. According to the 22nd Amendment to the United States’ Constitution, which was passed by Congress in
1947, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was elected for four times before the amendment was passed, is the only president to serve more than two terms. Trump will be well aware of his latest statement but it could be a diversion tactic. The Democrats formally announced Joe Biden as their Presidential candidate this week and this latest Trump announcement is sure to take away some of the limelight from him.

New App to ‘shake up’ National Lottery games New figures released by the National Lottery show that almost three quarters of players prefer to choose Quick Pick tickets, as opposed to choosing their own numbers, when playing National Lottery draw based games such as Lotto, EuroMillions and Daily Million.
Virtual course for visually impaired Sight loss charity Fighting Blindness is opening up their popular confidence building course, 'Living with Sight Loss', to visually impaired people living in Kerry and across Ireland. The free course will begin on Thursday, September 17 and run every Thursday from 11am to 3pm, finishing on Thursday, October 15. Previously, due to funding restrictions, the course was only available to those living in the border counties. To meet COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, the charity transformed the face-to-face five week course into a virtual webinar series. This new format has enabled them to open the course to people living in all 32 counties. According to the most recent statistics,
there are over 1,713 people in Kerry who are living with vision impairment or blindness. 'Living with Sight Loss' is designed to increase the confidence and independence of people who are living with any form of sight loss. The informal course will provide information and practical advice on a range of essential everyday topics such as getting out and about, information about welfare rights, and how technology can make life that bit easier. The course is delivered through the accessible video conferencing platform Zoom. A telephone dial in option is also available. Places are limited and must be booked in advance by contacting Fighting Blindness on 01 674 6496 or needtotalk@fightingblindness.ie.
This news comes as the National Lottery has this week announced the launch of its new App which aims to make playing National Lottery games more fun, easier and more secure. These figures show that an average of 74% of all players of Lotto, EuroMillions and Daily Million games choose the Quick Pick option when buying a their ticket, whether it be in-store or online. Lotto players are most likely to choose their own numbers, when compared to other games, with 33% choosing their own numbers (from 1 to 47) and the majority of 67% opting for Quick Picks for Lotto draws. A significant 79% of EuroMillions players chose the Quick Pick option rather than choose their own. 76% of players of the Daily Million game also go with the Quick
Pick option rather than selecting their own numbers. “We are absolutely delighted to launch the new App and are really excited to bring this to our players to bring a new dimension to playing National Lottery games," Cian Murphy, Head of Product and Digital at the National Lottery said. "With almost three quarters of National Lottery players choosing their numbers randomly, Irish people love their Quick Picks so we hope that the new shake feature will delight our players while giving them a key role in buying their ticket, which could make them a multi-millionaire! In terms of responsible play, our new age verification feature makes it safer, simpler and easier to age verify using their passport or drivers’ licence. This combined with the ability to set spending limits, locking games and the ability to take a break underlines our commitment to protecting our online players and encouraging responsible play." The new National Lottery App is available to download or to update from the App Store (on iPhone) or Google Play Store (on Android).
Footpaths to be upgraded in Cahersiveen town The long overdue upgrade of footpaths in Cahersiveen town, some of which are in a shocking state, will now happen as a result of the two recent allocations of €1m towards the towns regeneration, according to a local County Councillor. Fianna Fáil’s Michael Cahill says that many footpaths in the town have fallen into disrepair and it has been difficult to maintain them to a decent standard from the normal funds available. “The Rural Generation & Development Fund’s allocations of €2m to date from a total of €20m for the Cahersiveen Town Centre Regeneration Project, which will include the necessary upgrade of
footpaths in Cahersiveen, is absolutely welcome and exciting for the future,” he said. “The overall aim of the project will provide a brand new and vibrant look to the town, with the Daniel O’Connell Quarter and the reorientation of the town to the sea,” said the Fianna Fáil Councillor. “The state of many of the footpaths in Cahersiveen is terrible as anyone can see, and in particular on Valentia Road adjacent to the hospital.” Kerry County Council, he added, have advised him that they have been making a case to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for footpath and pavement improvements all along the N70 Ring of Kerry route through Cahersiveen.

The best waxing tips for smoother skin Would you like no more razor rash or stubble, nicks and cuts, pesky hairs and constant removal? Before we get started to a completely smooth and hair free body, these easy tips and tricks will help to get the most out of your waxing appointments. 1. Exfoliate before waxing Women should exfoliate on a daily basis because it reduces ingrown hair and reduces cellulite. Body brush towards the heart to help blood flow and reduce lymph. It leaves the skin feeling smooth. 2. Never shave before waxing If you’re planning on getting a bikini wax, you should not shave the hair for up to four weeks. This is critical as hair should be at least one-quarter of an inch in order for wax to catch the hair and leave a clean bikini area.
3. Don’t shave between wax appointments. One of the most common at-home hair removal blunders is shaving in between waxing appointments, though we can see why it happens so easily. When you shave, hair becomes thicker and more coarse. It also causes breakage. Three rules for first-timers to make it as pleasant and pain-free as possible; 1. No shaving or trimming hair in between appointments. 2. Regular exfoliation every other day 3. Scheduling appointments every four to six weeks. My advice is don’t be afraid. With three types of wax available; sensitive, strip wax and hot wax, we can cater for all skin types and requirements. Patch tests required for new clients. It's very easy to have done, but an appointment is essential even for a patch test.

DAMAGE: Mayor of Kerry Patrick O'Connor-Scarteen has called on Kerry County Council to apply for emergency funding to resurface roads damaged due to flooding.
Kilgarvan roads damaged due to severe flooding Mayor of Kerry Patrick O'Connor-Scarteen has called on Kerry County Council to apply for emergency funding to resurface roads damaged due to flooding. On Saturday he visited various locations around Kilgarvan, including Top of Coom, Incheese, Gortlahard and Coomolougha and the R569 Kilgarvan to Loo Bridge Road, which were badly damaged due to torrential rain making some of them unpassable. "Firstly, I wish to thank KCC outdoor staff for going above and beyond in assisting getting roads damaged passable for motorists," he said. "Unfortunately
the road below at Coomolougha is still unpassable due to severe damage to the bridge. I have called upon KCC to apply for emergency funding to resurface these roads and to repair the bridge at Coomolough." He said that it is essential for local residents and land owners that they can get too and from their properties safely. Many visitors and tourists also use these roads and private landholdings were also damaged. "Unfortunately we are seeing more and more extreme weather events and it is essential that we do all that we can to ensure people and their properties are safe."

Why is it so hard to lose weight?
How many times do you ask yourself this question? Anyone with a weight loss goal, who is working hard on establishing healthy habits, and trying to decrease the frequency of making unhealthy choices knows that losing weight takes time! Progress is rarely a straight line. Your weight loss journey is going to take a long term approach to dial things in, with much dedication and patience on your part. Paying attention to nutrition and taking the time to learn healthy habits to keep the weight off and be healthy across your lifespan is tough, but rewarding work. Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to improve their nutrition. While losing weight is not a goal for everyone, losing weight and lowering body fat is the most common goal we hear. Many people acknowledge that they need an accountability partner to help lose weight because they encounter some all too common roadblocks during their weight loss journey. Let's take a look at three of the most common roadblocks to lose weight: 1. L ooking for quick fixes or following fad diets It is often really tempting to follow a diet that you have heard has worked for someone else, which has led to a rapid weight loss. What you don’t know about this is that often these quick fixes or fad diets are super restrictive and are tough to sustain, leading to the regaining of weight. There is no one size fits all approach to weight loss. The benefit of meeting with a nutrition coach is that we work with you to come up with an individualised plan that fits your lifestyle. We also teach you to layer healthy habits over time and communicate with you regularly regarding strategies to stay on
track with your goals. 2. Not paying attention to what is going into our beverages So many times we look at incorporating lots of healthy foods in our diet when we are trying to lose weight, but we forget to pay attention to what we are drinking. Things like sugary coffee beverages, regular fizzy drinks, and fruit juices are packed with sugar and extra calories that can stand in the way of our weight loss goals. Our nutrition coach helps to educate you about these commonly overlooked roadblocks, teaches you the importance of logging, and helps you learn to read food and beverage labels. These tactics will help you make a more informed decision about these types of items and see how drinking these beverages affect your goal attainment. 3. Going all in and making too many changes at once Weight loss is a marathon and not a sprint. There is a tendency to want to make too many changes all at once in order to meet our goals sooner. What we see is that this is way too overwhelming, and people aren’t investing the time it takes to make healthy habits part of their foundation. You may hear your nutrition coach say that there is a three-month minimum time commitment required when entering a nutrition program. This is not to be mean, but rather help you achieve your goals by truly taking the time to learn healthy habits and avoid the temptation to make too many changes all at once. If you are looking to get some help with overcoming your own roadblocks on your weight loss journey, our nutrition coaches are here to help you be an accountability partner to achieve these goals. Schedule a free intro and get started on achieving your weight loss goals by emailing nutrition@activate.ie.
Pet experts advise owners as dognapping sweeps Kerry Terrified pet-owners across the country are on edge as news of a national dognapping issue spreads throughout Kerry. The lockdown created huge demand for pet dogs. Whilst many rescue shelters and professional breeders were unavoidably closed down, some less reputable sources have emerged. With demand at an all-time high, the sale of dogs has become a very lucrative business leading to the current spate of stolen pets. According to the Department of Justice ‘dognapping’ has soared by 50 percent in the last two years in Ireland, from 145 in 2018 to 210 last year. 120 dogs have been reported as stolen in the first six months of 2020. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some brazen ‘dognappers’ attempt to steal beloved pets whilst they are out walking with their owners. “It is very distressing for a pet-parent to lose a dog," Linda Cavanagh, Store Manager, Petmania Kerry said. "They are very much part of the family and the loss of a pet in sinister circumstances is even more devastating. We would like to offer dog-owners some simple tips to help keep their dog safe and sound.” Petmania Kerry is encouraging dog owners to follow these simple steps to help keep their furry-friend safe from harm: • First and foremost microchip your dog. Ensure that it is registered with the national database and that you have a Microchipping Certificate. This crucial step is sadly missed by many dog-owners. • Get a collar and name tag for your
pooch. This is one of the quickest ways to reunite a family with a lost pet. • When out exercising make sure that a responsible person is accompanying the pet. Under 16s shouldn’t be left in control of a dog without adult supervision. • Invest in a good strong lead and well fitting harness and collar for when your dog is out and about – this will help avoid the dog slipping away. • Spend time training your dog. Basic skills such as returning when called, ‘heel’ and ‘stop’ will keep pets in check when visiting a dog-park. • Think about where the animal will stay during periods of absence for example, when family members go to work. Is there a secure location at home to keep them safely? • Invest in a safe secure dog-run with a sturdy lock for periods of long absence. “A pet dog can be a wonderful complement to a family and a treasured member of the household. We would caution anyone thinking of getting a dog to go to a reputable dog breeder via the Irish Kennel Club or even better give a dog a second chance at the life it deserves by going to a dog shelter.” In the latest report, 165 dogs were handed into shelters in Kerry. Petmania works alongside Sera Husky and Animal Rescue Centre and Kingdom Cat and Dog Rescue locally. They have numerous adorable pooches available right now for re-homing. This is a trusted source for those considering adding a four-legged member to the family. For more information, see petmania.ie or visit in-store to speak with one of its pet experts.

“As a kid, I wanted to be a racing driver” -
says Hollywood star Michael Fassbender Hollywood star Michael Fassbender shared a race track with Formula One Grand Prix stars like Lewis Hamilton for the first time on Sunday. The Fossa-raised Hollywood star who has appeared in ‘Inglourious Basterds’, ‘12 Years a Slave’, and ‘X-Men’, tackled round six of the international one-make Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup championship near Barcelona, Spain. The championship is part of a series of support races that run alongside all F1 Grand Prix. This was the biggest event that he has tackled, so far, in his fledgling professional motor racing career. He is also contesting the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) in a 510-horse power Porsche 911 RSR fielded by the Porsche customer squad Proton Competition. His dream is to race in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in France next June. In an interview, which the Killarney Advertiser was given exclusive local access to, Fassbender shared how he got into
motor racing, how he balances his acting profession with this hobby, and what his next motorsport goal is with Porsche. Where does your passion for cars come from? “My father was always a keen driver; he taught me how to drive. So at a young age, I was lucky enough to be allowed in the car. When I was 12, I was allowed to play around on my own on a private road. There was a housing complex with a long straight and a kind of horseshoe bend at the end with another long straight. I always tried to go as fast as I could on the straight and take that hairpin as fast as I could.” Did that spark your interest in motor racing? “I guess. My first dream has always been to go racing. Even before the acting. It was always very clear to me from a young age. I always felt an affinity with cars, I felt a connection with driving and speed.” How did you get involved with Porsche Motorsport?
“My first contact with Porsche Motorsport was actually Patrick Dempsey (actor and co-owner of Proton Competition) on a flight from London to Los Angeles. I was following motorsports and I was congratulating him on a good result at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. We just started talking about getting into racing. And then he made the contact to Porsche Motorsport. My first step was the Porsche Track Experience. Then came the Porsche Racing Experience and a season in the Porsche Sports Cup Deutschland.” How do you manage to combine your hobby racing with your acting profession? “It’s pretty hard to do both things because obviously it’s difficult to get insurance on a film if I do racing at the same time. So for me, there is the race season and then there are months to do acting.
But I always had a plan that at 40 I would sort of ease off the acting and try to get into racing.” Your dream is to contest next year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. How are you preparing for this iconic race? “Last weekend’s race in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is part of my personal ‘Road to Le Mans’. I also drive a Porsche 911 RSR for Proton Competition at the long distance races of the European Le Mans Series. I share the car with Porsche factory driver Richard Lietz and Felipe Fernández Laser. What are you hoping to achieve? What do I expect? Well, the goal is to win. To be as fast as I possibly can, and that’s the goal. But the 24 hours of Le Mans is a team effort, so together with the team to achieve a class win at Le Mans is the goal.”

People in Kerry are being asked to have their say on Europe’s future relationship with the ocean and waters. The Marine Institute and the European Commission is inviting the people of Kerry to contribute to a better, bluer future for our ocean, seas, coastal and inland waters, by completing an online survey at www.getinvolvedinmissions.eu. Irish citizens can share what they believe are the top priorities for the health of our ocean and inland waters and how we can sustainably use and benefit from our marine and aquatic resources. “As an island nation, Ireland has a special relationship with the ocean, and its coastal and inland waters. It is our greatest natural resource, providing us with food, influencing our weather and climate, supporting marine ecosystems, sustaining our coastal communities and contributing to our economy," Dr Paul Connolly, CEO of the Marine Institute said. "Knowing, restoring and protecting our ocean and waters is a shared responsibility and will only be possible with the full support of science and people. The people of Ireland have the opportunity to share how the ocean is important to their everyday lives and to outline their priorities for achieving a healthy ocean.” ................................................................
Killarney trees down after Storm Ellen A number of trees were reported to be down in Killarney following high winds and severe weather conditions on Wednesday night. Four trees were reported down in Glenflesk and there was a tree reported down in Fossa on the N72 just before Killarney town near the Castlerosse Hotel which was cleared by Council crews yesterday (Thursday) morning. There was also some minor spot flooding on the Moll's Gap Road. Kerry County Council outdoor crews and Severe Weather Assessment Team were monitoring matters during the night as Storm Ellen hit. Rathmore seemed to have been worst affected in relation to electricity supply as 64 homes were left without power yesterday.

Prepare to present the best version of yourself!
Facing any interview is a nerve-wrecking experience for most people particularly when you are interviewing for a job that you really want to get. Regardless of the outcome, attending interviews is a great learning curve and you will definitely get better at them with experience. By preparing well for each interview, putting in the best effort possible in terms of performance, doing some post-interview analysis and seeking feedback you will greatly improve on your interview techniques and your chance of getting your dream job. Although the setting is very different for virtual interviews, for example via Skype or Zoom, the general guiding principles are the same. Be confident in yourself – you have gotten to interview stage, now you just need to show the employer that you are the person for the job!
BEFORE THE INTERVIEW
As mentioned in the previous article be clear on the type of interview you are attending, know what is in store. Know your CV or application form well, the interviewers will be looking for you to expand further on the important aspects so make sure you can stand over and give plenty evidence of all the details
you have included about yourself, your work experience and education. Know the job specification and description well so that all the answers you give reflect how well your skills and qualities suit the role and company. Research the company by checking out their website and their social media. Pay particular attention to LinkedIn for information on the company and employees and search the media for any recent articles on how the company is performing, any new products they have launched or awards they have received and keep an eye out for any links they have to community, environmental or social responsibility initiatives. Talk to anyone you know who works with the company or organisation. Find out as much as you possibly can. Prepare and practice question out loud (see suggestions below), record yourself on your phone and listen back. Dress appropriately depending on the level of the position and the working environment. You may not need a suit but you certainly need to look smart and professional. Arrive in plenty of time and give yourself enough head space to be ready to perform well. Nerves are perfectly normal and in fact help to keep you alert and focused. They usually subside after the first couple of minutes once you settle into
the atmosphere of the interview room. Get some fresh air before you go in, it helps to clear your head and settle the nerves. Use breathing exercises to relax if needed. When introduced to the interview board greet each one individually with a nod and a smile – no handshakes due to COVID-19.
DURING THE INTERVIEW
Focus on and try to maintain eye contact with the interviewer who has asked the question. Generally interviewers will start by asking you to tell them about yourself. This is to settle you in. Prepare this in advance so that you don’t waffle on and concentrate on the important things they need to know about you professionally – your experience, education, key skills and qualities – but keep it brief! The wording of other questions varies but essentially all employers want to know why you want to work for them, why you applied for the job, what key skills, qualities and competencies you have that make you suitable for the job and what makes you stand out from other applicants, basically why they should hire you. Prepare these answers in advance by looking closely at the job specification and highlighting the keywords. Use them in your answers. When answering, try to keep a structure on your answer par-

ticularly when asked for evidence of your skills and competencies such as teamwork, problem-solving, effective communication. Use the STAR format – Describe the Situation (background or context), the Task (give specifics), the Actions you took (use ‘I’ statements) and the Result (include what you learned from it). Make sure you get the opportunity to give them your Unique Selling Point (USP) - what makes you stand out from others, and don’t be shy about talking positively about yourself professionally. It can be effective to use this at the end if they ask you if you have anything to add.
AFTER THE INTERVIEW
Breathe a sigh of relief and congratulate yourself on getting through it! Jot down all the questions you were asked or as many as you can remember and make note of what you felt you did well in and areas for improvement in future interviews. Relax and wait for a result.
Joint initiative for healthy lunch boxes The Government has announced a collaboration with Healthy Ireland for a campaign on healthy lunch boxes It's part of the Let’s Get Ready campaign to support young children and their parents/guardians plan for returning to Early Learning and Care (ELC) settings or transitioning to pre-school or primary school for the first time. As Early Learning and Care settings plan to reopen at the end of August, the Let’s Get Ready website provides guidance for children and parents preparing to return these settings. There is a particular focus on new public health requirements introduced in response to COVID-19. The focus on the campaign will be all about making healthy food choices when packing a lunch box for pre-school and school. The Let’s Get Ready website also focuses on children preparing to attend pre-
school or primary school for the first time from this September. Let’s Get Ready includes guidance for parents on practical steps they can take to support their children over these coming weeks and tips on what children and parents can expect on their transition or return to pre-school and primary school. Information contains ideas for parents on healthy content of lunch boxes and appropriate portion size using leaflets prepared by Safefood, the North-South body responsible for promoting food safety and healthy eating. “As we get closer to the start of the new pre-school year, the ’Let’s Get Ready’ website has lots of useful tips for parents and guardians to help support their children, whether it’ll be a first day at crèche or a return to school," Minister O’Gorman said. "Let’s Get Ready will give parents ideas for healthy lunches and help children practice independence skills, like getting lunch and washing their hands."
GRADUATION: Oisín Doherty from Aughacurreen Killarney, graduated from Early Steps Childcare Faha on Thursday last.

Basketball camp is a slam dunk success A basketball camp held this week was a huge success as young athletes from all over Kerry got a chance to try out new skills from a top coach. | By Michelle Crean
Amy Darvanovic and Judyta Izeydorczyck
Christopher O'Connor, Adam Arthur, Olivia Guszekowska and Senan O'Leary
From dribbling to shooting and footwork to offensive skill sets, small sided games, 1 versus 1, conditioning and mental toughness, the kids got a variety of fun and tactics from their coaches. Held in Kilcummin National School, the four day camp took place from Tuesday to today (Friday). Organised by Head Coach for Scott's Lakers Jarlath Lee, father of para athlete Jordan Lee, the Fun Hoops Academy saw clubs St Paul's, Killarney Cougers, St Colman's Milltown, St Anne's Farranfore, Glenbeigh and Killorglin all take part. Jarlath, who has 20 years playing and won MVP of Nike Camp awards in Manchester and St Joseph in Philadelphia, said it was a great success. "The camps are not theme focused," Jarlath, who coaches for St Colmans in Milltown and St Paul's in Killarney told
the Killarney Advertiser. "It's a lot of independent development, a lot of skills which are fundamental, offence mainly, down to dribbling, shooting, teaching them about conditioning, and the different footwork. A lot of my coaching is to instil confidence in the players." Other coaches who also mentored the children in the camp included Jamie O'Sullivan, an U18 Ireland team player and Keelan Houlihan, ex Irish international and Scotts Lakers player, as well as other Scotts Lakers team members. Jarlath, who regularly coaches school children, says with current restrictions in place it'll make it hard to return to the schools once they reopen in the coming weeks, but is hoping it won't be for too long. "Eventually I will be holding future camps and personal training sessions and hopefully will get back into the schools," he added.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to whom one thing alone is impossible, namely, not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of Thee through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your and our tender Mother. He put his arms around you, And lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautfiul, He only takes the best. God knew you were in pain, And a cure was not to be, So he closed your weary eyes, And whispered ‘Come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you slip away, Although we loved you dearly, We knew you could not stay. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, They day God called you home.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Kevin. Masses and Candles lit today, and every day. 10 years have passed but yer good memories are still with us. God above has ye in his keeping, we have ye in our broken hearts. Candles lit for yer good souls. A memory is no good, rather have ye as life isn’t the same anymore without ye. Ye always had a smile to share and care for one another. We cannot bring the old days back when we were together. The family chain is forever broken now but yer good memories live forever till one day God calls us one by one, and our family chain will link up again. 3 stars so bright that yer light to say goodnight. Twinkle twinkle little star how we wonder where ye are, up above in heaven to someday greet us. A mother’s love for her 2 children - they day they were born is unbelievable but the day I lost ye half my heart went with ye. I know there’s heaven past the blue sky. BIG RED MACHINE
The County Championship is back and there’s just one question on everyone’s lips: can anyone stop East Kerry? It’s championship season in Kerry. Sixteen of our finest football teams going head to head for the county’s biggest prize, the Bishop Moynihan trophy. And, in a win for the nostalgists, it’s straight knockout for the first time since 2001. What more could you ask for? Well, being allowed through the gate to actually witness the action would be a start. The recent spike in COVID-19 cases in this country has led to stricter measures which will be enforced over the coming month or so, and the world of sport is no exception. The previous figure of 200 spectators (which in reality was only 80 once players, management, club officials, match officials, county board officials, media and stewards were accounted for) has been cut to zero as all matches are to be staged behind closed doors until September 13. It’s a difficult one to get the head around. The issue apparently centres around fans congregating before and after matches, as opposed to problems with social distancing in the stands and terraces while the matches themselves are taking place. I can’t speak about the country, or even Kerry, as a whole, but I’ve attended a number of games in Killarney in recent weeks and I must say that I just haven’t seen that happening. Like, at all. The GAA are understandably perplexed by the new measures and they have asked for “empirical evidence” linking their matches with the recent rise in cases. It will be interesting to see if that evidence exists.
COMFORT
At least we can take some comfort in the fact that the Kerry Senior Football Championship is actually going ahead
because that alone seemed fairly unlikely at certain stages earlier on in the year. Perhaps understandably, much of the pre-tournament talk revolves around the champions, East Kerry. Last October’s triumph may have been the divisional side’s first title for 20 years but it was so emphatic, and their squad looked so strong, there are fears in some quarters that this year’s County Championship could be a foregone conclusion. Of course there are a few clubs who might have something to say about that but if David Clifford and co. do manage to go back-to-back in 2020, you can bet your life that the calls to deamalgamate the Eastern bloc will intensify. That won’t perturb manager Jerry O’Sullivan or his players (for the time being at least); their focus will be on the Round 1 match-up against the tournament’s rank outsiders, Feale Rangers. Without being disrespectful to Rangers, it would be fair to say that the draw has not been kind to them. The men from North Kerry have a poor enough record in recent times: in the past five years they have won just two of their 11 matches with their last victory coming in 2017. They failed to advance beyond the preliminary round last time out following a nine-point defeat to St Kieran’s. It’s safe to say that East Kerry was the last name they wanted to see coming out of the hat and if they manage to beat the holders on Saturday, it would surely constitute one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history. One player to keep an eye on is Barry Mahony of St Senan’s. The skilful midfielder got called into the extended Kerry panel this year and he looks to be a very talented operator.
MAIN MAN: David Clifford is hoping to lead East Kerry to back-to-back Kerry SFC titles.
SPORT
21.8.2020 However, with Rathmore and Kilgarvan players now added to the roster, and Dara Moynihan and Dan O’Brien returning from injury, the East Kerry dream team will take some beating.
BLACK AND AMBER
Whenever Dr Crokes meet Austin Stacks, it’s more than the colours that clash. This Tralee/Killarney rivalry is as fierce as they come and when they were drawn to face one another in the first round of the championship, it drew oohs and ahs the length and breadth of the county. Dr Crokes will naturally be disappointed with how the Club Championship played out for them. Losing to Kenmare, in what was effectively a semi-final, with the last kick of the game was a tough way to go down and it won’t have done much for the confidence. Ideally, they would have preferred a handier tie in Round 1 to get back in their groove but instead they must overcome a vibrant Stacks team to keep their championship ambitions alive. Stacks will play Kenmare in that club final once both clubs’ involvement in the Kerry SFC comes to an end but the Rockies will be hoping to put that particular fixture on the back burner for another few weeks if they can. Momentum is certainly on their side. They were terrific against Legion in that must-win game two weeks ago
55
with Joe O’Connor and Brendan O’Sullivan impressing at centre field. That 8 and 9 pairing will provide a very stern test for Crokes midfielders Mark O’Shea and Johnny Buckley. Gaining the upper hand in this particular department could prove crucial.
APPETISING
In another appetising all-club match, Legion will take on Kerins O’Rahilly’s in a battle between two of the more mercurial teams in Kerry. All-in-all it was a poor enough Club Championship for Legion. They didn’t really reach their potential in any of their three games and they can have no arguments with where they ended up in the Group 2 table. James O’Donoghue is obviously the focal point of the team; he was Man of the Match in their sole victory over Kilcummin and when injury led to reduced minutes against Dingle and Stacks, the East Kerry champions found the going tough. His availability or otherwise for the County Championship will be huge. Podge O’Connor is apparently close to making his comeback from injury and that would be a massive bonus for Stephen Stack and his management team. For their part, Rahilly’s weren’t as bad in the Club Championship as their final day predicament might have suggested. Yes, they needed a result versus Templenoe to avoid the relegation playoff but they should have beaten

Kenmare and they gave Crokes enough of it too. They have a strong enough spine, especially if Tommy Walsh is available for selection, and they will fancy their chances against Legion. Given the unpredictable nature of these two teams, it’s a very hard game to call. So I won’t.
LIVE
Elsewhere, Kilcummin have a tricky tie against the side they beat in last year’s
losers round, Mid Kerry; club finalists Kenmare host Shannon Rangers; St Brendan’s take on West Kerry; St Kieran’s face South Kerry; and Dingle welcome club counterparts Templenoe to Páirc an Ághasaigh. The gates may be closed but supporters will still be able to watch six of the eight matches live either online or on national television. It’s not as good as the real thing, but at least it’s something.

Celtic youths on cusp of history Killarney youngsters 90 minutes away from All-Ireland glory Killarney Celtic’s exploits in this season’s FAI Youth Cup are already the stuff of club legend but this talented group of youngsters are not quite finished yet. Over the course of an elongated campaign, they have achieved some incredible results against top class opposition. Now it’s time to take that extra step and secure this prestigious national title for the first time in the club’s history. If their games to date are anything to go by, we could be set for a spectacular finale.
FAI YOUTH CUP FINAL
_________________________________________________________________________
Killarney Celtic v Douglas Hall Sunday at 2pm Mounthawk Park, Tralee
SPECIAL It takes a special kind of team to make it all the way to an All-Ireland final. Talent is important, of course, but equally important is the right attitude and the will to win. In Round 1, Celtic showed that they have all of these qualities in abundance. Half-way through their opening round match against Killorglin in October of 2019, The Hoops were on the ropes.
In fact, it was far worse than that. They were on the canvas and on the brink of being counted out. A disastrous opening 45 minutes saw the reigning league and cup champions trailing by four goals to nil and it looked for all the world as though their FAI adventure was about to be over before it had even started. With the words of mentors Matt Keane, Jerry Falvey and Conor McCarthy ringing in their ears, they managed to pull themselves back up to their feet, and then came the fightback. A brace apiece by skipper Terry Sparling and attacking midfielder Dylan Callaghan sent the match to extra time, and centre midfielder Evan Looney popped up with the

21.8.2020 all-important winner to complete an unbelievable turnaround. The victory set up a derby versus Killarney Athletic in Round 2 and when Callaghan (two) and Pádraic Looney gave them a 3-0 lead, Athletic seemed to be defeated. The Blues responded well, however, and they staged a comeback of their own to send the match to overtime. Once again it was a midfielder who came up with the goods for Celtic in ET as James Darmody netted to send his side into the third round. A trip to Galway to play Bearna/Na Forbacha followed with a place in the last 16 at stake. Despite conceding an early goal to their hosts, Celtic ran out 6-1 winners with Sparling (two), Pádraic Looney, Jason Kerins, Callaghan and Darmody all finding the target. Now the bus was really rolling.
DOMINANT
This result led to a home tie against Waterford’s Villa FC in mid-February. In front a sizeable home crowd (remember those?), Killarney Celtic put in a very dominant performance. Callaghan, Darmody and Jackson O’Mahony were the goalscorers as The Celts won 3-1 to make it through to the last eight. Park United from Mitchelstown were the next team to get the Celtic treatment and strikes by Sparling and wide man Ruairí Doyle sent the Cork men home empty-handed. Galway giants Mervue rolled into town for the semi-final a fortnight ago and the old seanfhocal ‘tús maith leath na hoibre’ rang true for the hosts as early goals by Evan Looney and Emmet Cronin set them up for an impressive 2-1 win.
IMMORTALITY
Only one Kerry team (Tralee Dynamos in 1998) have won the FAI Youth Cup in its 85-year history. Celtic came mightily close in 2011 when they made it all the way to the final before succumbing to Cork City. For this current crop of Celtic youngsters, Douglas Hall of Cork stand between them and immortality. This match is ticket only and will be streamed live on the Full Time Productions Facebook page.

Soccer in Killarney
FROM THE ARCHIVES | By Eamonn Fitzgerald
THE EARLY YEARS In this article from 2015, Eamonn Fitzgerald charts the birth of Killarney’s soccer clubs, which sprang to life and flourished despite opposition from the GAA.
Gaelic football has the widest appeal in Kerry and this will be even more evident over the next few weeks as supporters plan for the return of Sam to Kerry. However, soccer has grown steadily in the past half a century and nowhere more so than in Killarney and in the surrounding suburbs. This was the impetus for Joe Grant to publish ‘Soccer in Killarney: The Early Years’. Killarney Athletic are celebrating their 50 years in existence and this publication gives the readers a good insight, especially on how soccer got going at all considering the opposition of well-known GAA stalwarts in Killarney. The author chronicles this, but does add that there were some enlightened GAA folks who took a more sporting approach to the development. Grant sets the scene in Killarney in the 60s when “one could be banned for six months from all GAA activities for attending a soccer, rugby or hockey match, as a spectator (never mind playing the games) and could also be banned for attending foreign dances”. The infamous ‘ban’, aka Rule 27 of the GAA, was in vogue at the time, so there was no club soccer as such. The author discovered from his research that some youngsters played soccer with one of four groups in the early 60s. These were the Fairfield group playing opposite the
Friary; the Park Road group; New Street, who played off Ross Road; and the Sandpit group. From my own research in the early eighties I discovered that the GAA street leagues of the 1920s, which featured teams from College Street, High Street and New Street (“the boys below the bridge”) had the same rivalry as the ad hoc soccer groupings. By chance, the Sandpit group’s activities and the enthusiasm and vision of an off-duty garda led directly to the formation of Killarney Athletic.
DAN HARRINGTON
Some years ago I met Dan Harrington in Manchester and he told me how he as a rookie guard in Killarney he came across a group of students playing soccer in the Sandpit (now High Street car park) on Thursday afternoons, which were halfday in the Sem. I recalled this with Sossy (Mullins), Donie Kelly, Mike Looney and Greg Collins. Sossy told me at first they ran away from him fearing the strong hand of the law. Later they realised that he was interested in soccer. Every movement and organisation needs a leader with a vision and Dan Harrington, the Cork city guard, who was then just 19 years of age, became the catalyst to form the fledging Killarney Athletic club in 1965. Joe Grant concludes that Killarney Athletic would never have seen the light
of day only for Dan Harrington coming across The Oranges playing against The Bananas in the Sandpit. Dan was prepared to “intercede, negotiate, persuade, plead and bargain”. Yes, he was Killarney Athletic. Some prominent local GAA diehards went to Supt. Batt Harte in New Street complaining about this young garda who was introducing teenagers to a banned foreign game. Harrington was reprimanded and was due to be moved to a North Kerry station. Sergeant John Leen (of Park Road) interceded, pointing out that Dan Harrington was doing a great service for this group of Killarney youths. The garda was not transferred and Killarney Athletic was founded in 1965.
NAME
Athletic got its name from Spanish football team Athletico Madrid. Their first game was away to Tralee Dynamos in September 1965. They won 3-2. Their home was in the Half Moon (Demesne) and, in recent years, their fine pitches have been developed in Woodlawn, through the great work of Mikey O’Sullivan, Don Donoghue, Donie Murphy, Mike O’Shea and many others. I love the story of Don O’Donoghue, Joe Grant and Seán O’Donoghue going to Fenit to buy fishermen’s nets for their goals. Mo bhrón agus mo léir cráite they were a bad ’margadh’ as their long years in the salty water meant they did not survive too long, disintegrating rapidly as the new Athletic forwards rattled the nets. Notwithstanding an uncertain start in un-
charted territory, Killarney Athletic made some very astute decisions to bring the club to what it is today, celebrating its 50-year anniversary. The club that was founded despite intransigent opposition has thrived ever since, famous for its summer 7-a-side, played on the then Friary grounds before the council converted it to a car park.
NEW CLUBS
The tenacity of Killarney Athletic to get going spawned great interest for more clubs to set down roots. In 1969 there was a Liebherr team of workmates from the factory and the late twinkle toes himself, Alex Rintoul, told me how that developed into Fossa AFC. In 1975, Ballyhar Dynamos was founded to cater for the rural areas around Firies. The late great Murt Scott, who worked in O’Callaghan Plumbers, College Street, was the catalyst for this venture, braving all kinds of weather to make sure the lads had a game on Sunday. Fittingly, the club field is named after him. Mikey Daly and Billy Healy founded Killarney Celtic, the second town club, in 1976, and they have sampled great success with magnificent facilities in Ballydribeen On to Kilcummin and Mastergeerha AFC was founded in 1979. They have wonderful lighted grounds in Kilbrean Park.
ROOM FOR ALL
Notwithstanding all this soccer development, the GAA in Killarney continues to thrive, despite all those early fears. There is room for all and just as John Hume did in Northern Ireland, bringing both rival sides together, there is a place for all. I know that Dan Harrington is so happy to see how the clubs are also now catering so well for the women who want to play soccer. And it all started with a 19-year-old Cork garda, not long out of the depot, coaxing teenagers to play soccer. What matters the shape or the size of the ball?!

I rish motorcycle racing championship is go
There are hopes that a limited Dunlop Irish Masters motorcycle racing championship can go ahead after series organisers announced two dates for September and October at Mondello Park, subject to restrictions that may be in place at that time. Local rider Frank Doherty finished second in the Cup series last year. “I am ready to go,” Frank told the Killarney Advertiser. “But who knows if these events will even go ahead. I am already thinking more about next season.” As a result of the limited season, champi-
onship bosses have said that they will not run a junior class this year, which leaves Kevin Coyne without any hope of racing in Ireland in 2020. | C oyne ready for next step Local motorcycle racer Kevin Coyne’s British Championship campaign continues this week with a visit to Snetterton in Lincolnshire. The 18-year-old Farranfore-based rider is tackling this year’s HEL Performance British Junior Supersport Championship on his Kawasaki.
