Future proofing the local community
A brand-new national initiative on community well-being is to be rolled out in Killarney next week. | By Michelle Crean Kerry Public Participation Network (PPN) wants to hear from all the groups and organisations in the Killarney Municipal District area, as they host the ‘Community Well-being Vision’ for the Killarney Municipal District area next Thursday, February 27 in the KDYS
Youth Centre, Fair Hill, Killarney. Kerry PPN is a collective of all the community, voluntary, social inclusion and environmental groups in Kerry of which there are now over 740 registered groups, Caroline Toal, KPPN Network Development Officer, told the Killarney Advertiser.

Established in 2014, the PPN provides the community voice on Kerry County Council committees, such as the Strategic Policy Committees and the Joint Policing Committee (JPC). It also runs training courses for member groups and shares information about funding and activities. “Developing a vision for community well-being means thinking about what we have and what we need to help Kerry to be as great as it can be for us and for the many generations that follow on from ours.” Under this programme, the Kerry PPN and the other 30 Public Participation Networks in the country will look at community well-being under the same headings; social and community development; environment and sustainability; work, economy and resources; health; values, culture and meaning; and participation, democracy and good governance. “By using these six headings across the country, we can see whether we in Kerry have the same concerns and causes for celebration as others.” Kerry PPN is very excited to be part of the national community well-being initiative, Bill Morrell, PPN Secretariat member added. “So, for example, if our natural environment is poor, it will affect our mental and physical health as well as our economy. In other words, all the parts of our community well-being are interconnected.” Everyone is welcome to come along to this event and groups will also be able to feed in online. For more information or to get involved you can contact Caroline Toal at 066 7183672 or ctoal@kerrycoco.ie .
Witnesses sought for serious assault | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardai are investigating a serious assault that took place in the town centre in the early hours of last Sunday morning. A 19-year-old local man was attacked by a group of up to six men as he walked across the Glebe car park. The men were travelling by car when a verbal altercation took place before a number of the men jumped out and set upon the victim. The young man was taken to hospital but he was released later the same day. “We are appealing to witnesses who may have been in the Glebe car park area in the early hours of Sunday morning,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser.
SouthDoc strike to affect Killarney services | By Sean Moriarty Today’s strike action by SouthDoc staff - from today (Friday) at 5.30pm until tomorrow morning will have a huge impact on services in Killarney. Staff at the out of hours medical services are engaging in the strike action in a row centering on the restoration of previous pay cuts. Back in 2010, the Health Service Executive (HSE) cut pay across all medical support staff sectors by 10 percent. In recent years, pay has been restored to HSE staff - but other services have not had their previous pay reinstated. The action, called by trade union SIPTU,
affects SouthDoc’s High St premises and will have far reaching consequences across Kerry and Cork. The local centre employs five drivers and five clerical staff. However, the Killarney branch also acts as the call centre for Cork and Kerry and up to 30 staff, who work on a shift-rota, will also take strike action. “The cut backs in 2010 related to all health staff,” Killarney-based SIPTU Kerry branch organiser Donal Doody told the Killarney. “HSE staff had their pay restored but the same is not happening for our members. The Workplace Relations Commission is refusing to concede.” Staff at Valentia Hospital and St Joseph’s Nursing Home in Killorglin will also take strike action today.

Senator Coghlan calls time on political career Killarney-based Senator Paul Coghlan has revealed that he will not be standing for re-election when voting for the Upper House membership takes place in the coming weeks.

Communities unite to help sick baby
| By Sean Moriarty An election for the Seanad must occur not later than 90 days after the dissolution of Dáil Éireann and with the General Election called on January 14, the Senate election must take place on or before April 14. The long-standing Fine Gael representative, who was first elected to the Seanad in 1997, has announced his retirement from politics. He was a member of Kerry County Council between 1991-1999 and Killarney Urban District Council from 1985-1999, while he also contested the General Election in Kerry South in 1992. The 75-year-old also served two terms as Mayor of Killarney. He was one of the main political drivers behind the reopening of Killarney House as a public visitor centre, a town-wide dream that was realised in June 2017. “I have been in the Senate for more than 20 years, it is time to hand over the baton to someone younger,” he told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Will I

miss it, I will and I won’t. I was devoted to the job every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the last 20 years and I did love it.” The Killarney-based businessman, a founding director of Radio Kerry and a current director and a trustee of Muckross House, will concentrate on these interests and his family auctioneering firm, Sherry FitzGerald Coghlan on New Street.
Polish and Irish communities in Killarney have come together to help raise funds towards the €2m cost of treatment for a very sick little baby. Polish native Gosia Zakrzewski called on the local business community to donate what they could to help fund medical treatment for 15-month-old Franio Marcinkowski, who was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type I and now faces a battle between life and death. Locals in Killarney rallied when they heard of the baby’s plight and have since roped in the help of others.
Diana Sobas Gorka and Gosia Zakrzewski set about fundraising. “I come from where the family live in Poland and when I saw it on Facebook I felt I wanted to do something,” Gosia told the Killarney Advertiser. “Diana created an Irish group and I felt I needed to help in some way. Every day our group is growing. We have Buddies Killarney, Bowling Buddies in Tralee, West Hotel in Bantry, Malgorzata Milczek Photography, Unique Hair by Katarzyna Bartczak, polish shop Pewex, Porterhouse, Chocolate Hair Salon, Formally Yours, BEBeauty by Aga Kuc.” Anyone looking donate can do so by joining the FB group: ‘Auctions for Franio Marcinkowski’.
Tributes paid to tourism advocate Vincent Counihan | By Sean Moriarty Tributes have been paid to former Killarney travel agent Vincent Counihan who died this week. Mr Counihan, who died on Monday, was well-known in town, aside from his business interests he was heavily involved in community organisations like the Killarney Town Twinning Association, the Killarney-London Reunion and the early years of the Tops of the Town variety shows that were common place across Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s. In the early years of the Killarney-London Reunion Mr Counihan would have arranged travel for local members heading to the British capital. Current Reunion Chairman Noel O’Sullivan said Mr Counihan was involved since the first reunion in 1969.
“It was with great sadness we learned of the passing of Vincent,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was involved, right from the very beginning, up until the late 1980s, and would provide the travel arrangements on the Killarney side. We pass on our sincere sympathies to his family and friends.”
TRAVEL INDUSTRY PIONEER
Born into the family business, Counihan Travel Agency on High Street, Vincent continued the family tradition of making holiday memories for generations of locals, as well as making local memories for visitors to Killarney through the Counihan family jarvey business. In the mid-1970s he led a contingent from the local Junior Chamber of Commerce to Finland and Sweden to forge relationships with business communities
Vincent Counihan and Sean O'Keeffe (Trustees of Muckross House) with President Hillary 1980.
there and successfully won a major convention for Killarney which resulted in hundreds of delegates travelling to the town two years later. “Vincent was a giant of a man, both in physical stature and in personality as a well-known businessman around Killarney where he was a great proponent of tourism and Killarney generally,” hotelier Tracy Coyne, who was speaking on behalf of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel
Federation, said. “The Irish Hotel Federation would like to extend their deepest sympathies at this sad time.” Vincent, who passed away in Ashborough Lodge Nursing Home in Milltown, was predeceased by his wife, Betty (nee Coghlan, from Beaufort). Requiem Mass took place yesterday (Thursday) after which he was laid to rest at Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery.

Three different routes are on offer to suit people of all abilities, a stroll near Muckross House, a walk from Muckross to Dinish, or a hike to Torc Mountain. “Kerry footballers have always support-
ed carrying a donor card and we are delighted to welcome David Clifford’s support this year,” Theresa Looney from IKA told the Killarney Advertiser. “Sport and healthy living go hand in hand. This is a new walk for us, the three routes will suit everyone, families with buggies can do the stroll while toughies can climb the mountain.” Registration will get underway at 9.30am at the Muckross Park Hotel, entry fees are set at €20 for adults and €30 for families.
Singers wanted for new international choir
Singers of all nationalities are being called upon to join a brand new international choir in Killarney next week.
| By Michelle Crean Whether you love singing your country’s traditional songs or want to learn songs from another language, then Killarney International Choir may be just for you. Those behind the new project, Marilyn Catapat-Counihan, Paul O'Raw and Phil Leen, felt a need to develop it following the Killarney Immigrant Support Centre (KASI) Christmas party in December. “At the KASI party we had a sing-song,” Marilyn told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Paul brought his guitar and we had a great time so we thought maybe we
should set up a choir.” She added that all nationalities are welcome however they must be aged over 18. “Paul’s idea is to have songs from different parts of the world in that language that we all can learn. We are open to male and female members from all countries and backgrounds. It’s a celebration of diversity, cultures and common humanity.” An information evening will be held next Friday, February 28 at the Parish Centre beside the Church of the Resurrection, at 7pm. Paul can be contacted on 0872317204 or Marilyn on 086 7915742.
Full NCTs resume in Killarney | By Sean Moriarty Full testing has resumed at Killarney’s National Car Test Centre. NCT centres across the country were forced to stop underbody testing after a fault was discovered in lifts in some test centres offering partial tests to motorists while it investigated problems with lifts in all of its 47 centres.
The lift at the Killarney centre was replaced earlier this week, and full testing has resumed at the local centre but priority will be given to drivers who are due to undergo a driving test shortly or a taxi roadworthiness test and those with bookings. “NCTS can confirm that we have now recommenced underbody inspections in Killarney,” Sinead McKeon of the NCTS told the Killarney Advertiser.
WALK THIS WAY: Launching the Irish Kidney Association’s Walk are Noreen Buckley, Stephen Byrne, David Clifford, Theresa Looney (Patient Support Officer Kerry Branch IKA) and Brendan Herbert (Chairman Kerry Branch IKA).
Hit and run at local car dealership as wall knocked | By Sean Moriarty A local car dealer is looking for witnesses after the wall of his garage and some of his second hand car stock was extensively damaged in a hit and run in the early hours of Thursday morning. Dermot Healy, who runs Dermot Healy Car Sales on the Cork road arrived at work on Thursday to find a gapping 10-foot hole in the perimeter wall of his property. The stone wall had been demolished and debris hit and damaged a number of sales cars that were parked in the forecourt of the premises. The remains of broken lamps from the car that caused the damage were left at the scene and Mr Healy was, through contacts in the motor trade, able to identify these as belonging to a Volvo S40.
“I came home around 12.30am,” Dermot, who lives next door to his garage, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It hadn’t happened at that time. The car [a Suzuki Swift] will need a new bumper and headlamp and I don’t know how much the wall is even going to cost.” He is appealing to any witnesses to get in touch with him at the garage on 064 6632264.

Historian disputes local place name A well-known local historian has questioned a recent article which named the tunnel on the Moll’s Gap road as the Newfoundland Bay Tunnel. | By Sean Moriarty
Motorists face weeks of diversion as works continue The Loo Bridge to Kilgarvan Road could be closed for a number of weeks – due to the fast-flowing river. | By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council took the decision to close the road after it collapsed into the Roughty River on February 9 - during Storm Ciara. Motorists are being advised to follow diversion routes which include the Moll’s Gap Road for people accessing Killarney from the Kenmare side and The Top of Coom for those requiring access from the Cork side. Council officials said the work could take weeks because of how close to the fast-flowing river that the works are taking place. “The work is difficult due to its location in close proximity to the river and it will take some time to restore and re-open the road. It is anticipated that works will take a number of weeks,” a Council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.
“While some safety works have been carried out on the Foiladown Road, this road is not part of the official diversion route and motorists should use the diversions via Moll’s Gap and Top of Coom only (as signposted).” Wall repair works on the Moll’s Gap road near the tunnel have been postponed. These works were due to get underway next Wednesday and run until midMarch. These works would require full road-closure but with this section now being used as the official diversion between Killarney and Kenmare they have now been postponed. Once the Loo Bridge road re-opens, the Killarney Advertiser understands that there must be a five week gap between each closure and that would mean that the Moll’s Gap work could start after Easter. “There’s no decision on that yet,” added the Council spokesperson.

Published by the Killarney Advertiser last week, the article referred to a Kerry County Council press release which named the tunnel as Newfoundland Bay Tunnel. However, local historian Damien Switzer disputes the name. He accepts that the bay in Upper Lake, just below where the tunnel sits on the Moll’s Gap Road, is called Newfoundland Bay. “Any local fisherman will tell you that but the tunnel has no official OSI name nor is it named on any map going back to when the tunnel was built and I have them all, I collect them,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Admittedly you got your information from an official source but this is rewriting history and that cannot happen on my watch.” The disputed statement, was issued to advertise a proposed road closure for road works, works that have now be postponed following the closure of the Kilgarvan to Loo Bridge road following a recent landslide during Storm Ciara. ‘The purpose of the road closure is to allow repair works to be completed on a section of partially collapsed retaining wall on the N71 in the townland
of Gortroe which is located approximately 100m south of Newfoundland Bay Tunnel. The road is narrow at this location so a road closure will be required to complete the works safely’, the statement read. Mr Switzer added that the Council official is most definitely one hundred percent wrong. “It's not Gortroe, it's Gortderraree. Last time I checked, Gortroe was in Fossa and yes the bay on the Upper Lake is called Newfoundland. The famous engineer Alex Nimmo is responsible for its creation, he also built the suspension bridge in Kenmare.” The historian went into fascinating detail to reveal, what he believes, is the correct name for the tunnel. “The tunnel was on the Prince of Wales route, blasted from Cromaglaun Mountain, which the old Irish used call it. They referred to the tunnel as 'through Cromaglaun’,” he said. “Anyway, local lore aside, the official provable name that has featured in numerous books for about 200 years is ‘The Heading’. From Westminster to Derrynane it was known as 'The Heading', and it also gained notoriety and was made famous by a local robber called Martin Mahony who used to hide there.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
TD has apologised for antisemitic comments Newly elected Sinn Féin TD Reada Cronin has apologised for linking Israel to Nazism, and calling Israeli staff “monkeys”. In newer TDs I do wonder if they are entirely woke to the history of the Jewish people, what they suffered in Nazi Germany and not just in Germany. The antisemitism which developed so ugly in Germany, in Poland, in France, Austria and Middle Europe, was a slow burner. Niall Collins the Fianna Fáil TD and spokesman on Foreign Affairs, a great supporter of Palestine, had to apologise last August after pedalling the old trope about the power of “the Jewish lobby” in America in an interview on a
Pakistani news channel. I give full marks to the Jewish Council and people like the much lamented Alan Shatter, former TD, a gifted figure, for coming out and issuing a statement on the matter. It is so important Jewish organisations shout when anything like this comes up - part of the problem in the ‘30s and ‘40s was they thought by staying silent they would be alright. And we know what happened then. Now Cronin has apologised, but not enough for my liking and Mary Lou
Could both Cleo and Danny be right? One might be tempted in the light of all the nationalist singing and drum beating since the election to remember the song ‘When Only Our Rivers Run Free’. Yet it is the other shade of green that has come before the Council this week when it comes to rivers. Right now that shade of green seems a great deal more urgent and pressing than a united Ireland. Killarney councillor Michael Gleeson who dons the green jersey of the environmental kind in the absence of even one green councillor in the Tralee chamber, has highlighted the
fact that our rivers “thus far free flow” into the sea. There is a strange “confluence” of events here - first of all the R569 road along the Flesk River, the main road to Kilgarvan collapsed on the very day of the election count, as we all know. However, TD Danny Healy-Rae completely rejected Green candidate Cleo Murphy’s claim that his was climate change. It was “ironic” the road home should go on a day Danny said “to hell with the climate”, Cleo had said. Danny apologised for that remark later, but he remains adamant that the flooding and erosion on the Flesk is
needs to come out on this. And Fianna Fáil’s Michéal Martin, if he goes into coalition with Sinn Féin, needs to clarify his party’s stance instead of its usual wink and nod approach. For that matter, Fine Gael’s Simon Coveney too, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is a little too Pro-Palestinian for my liking, could raise his head over the parapet on his attitude to Israel. Last November/December he waltzed around “condemning” Israeli settlements and the year before gave €2m funding to Palestinian people. And this year there was a donation of almost €9m towards a solar plant in Palestine. due to water running off the N22, and the failure to deepen and dredge the Flesk River. Could both Cleo and Danny be right? Cllr Michael Gleeson in his very interesting motion before Kerry County Council poses the question about rising sea levels off the Kerry coast, the impact for coastal communities, and for the rivers that until now flow freely into the Atlantic. Are our rivers already backing up, one wonders, and our lakes? It is not so long ago since a seal was spotted on the Muckross Lake. Perhaps that was swept in by a higher sea level. Maybe Danny is right and we need to deepen the river beds, and Cleo is right too and climate change is occurring on the river Flesk - part of which is oceans and rivers area already rising. I look forward to the conversation between them, with Cllr Gleeson as mediator.
Boris and the UK visa restrictions There is much talk about Boris and the visa restrictions on all immigration into the UK beginning next year. Low-skilled workers - defined as catering, senior care and hospitality as well as construction - are to be severely curtailed. Those from Europe and elsewhere will have to show an
offer of employment of a minimum of £25,000, and they will have to speak English. Hoteliers and other employers in the North of Ireland are already saying they are going to face a skills shortage and wages will increase. Wages of course decreased in the UK and Ireland, and trade union membership plummeted in the hotel sector
after Europe expanded its borders. Disgracefully, much sought after summer jobs for students and school goers were simply unavailable for our local students. The thing has come full circle now and Irish workers are increasingly in demand from local employers - only they now are in short supply, many of them having emigrated having thrown the towel in.
Greenways and railways Some months ago I posited that the South Kerry Greenway might yet pave the path for a return of old rail lines and that it might be a Trojan horse, and indeed that it should herald the return of the railway. I know eyebrows were raised. Well, lo and behold, what do I hear on Matt Cooper’s Today FM show on Wednesday night only a Fianna Fáil TD spouting the same thing! I hope Michael Healy-Rae was listening as he sat near her. Niamh Smith TD for Cavan-Monaghan said we should build railways “in conjunction with Greenways”. I almost choked on my mineral water. Here again we have a person well outside Kerry reading the Killarney Advertiser. We have already established that the new PM Boris reads the column. Only we can take no credit for his bridge between Ireland and Scotland, which is such a good idea and would not have been beyond the great Scottish engineers of the 19th century who were involved too in the viaduct over Kells, me thinks. Anyway, roll on the rolling stock to south Kerry as well as the Greenway. By the way, a decision on the Greenway is expected at the end of March from An Bord Pleanála.
Niamh Smith TD
The strange pattern of migration is set to continue with the young Irish departing, with better wages, the better chance of getting a house of their own together, and the chance of a better lifestyle in warmer climates. Here we can look forward to a greater supply of labour given the new restrictions. But what does this new move reveal about the UK, and us so far - that much of their economy and basic services depends on low wages and migrant workers?

Musical Society promise spectacular show It promises to be a spectacular production next week as members of Killarney Musical Society (KMS) bring their latest dazzling show to the stage. | By Michelle Crean Over 70 are in the cast for this year’s ‘Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ in the Gleneagle INEC Arena from Tuesday, February 25 to Thursday 27 inclusive, for the Society’s 35th production. It’s a musical comedy, a tale that follows
the journey of a dreamer, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music from Andrew Lloyd Webber. Joseph, the son of Jacob is given a coat of many colours by his father and encounters the jealousy of his 12 brothers. “It is a musical lovers favourite as the entire story is told through song and dance,” Orna Cleary, PRO of KMS said.
“It really is a non-stop couple of hours of music, song, laughter, colour, dancing, and overall spectacle. We have a cast of over 70 people on stage, half of those being our fabulous children and teens chorus. The cast have worked tirelessly over the past few months, rehearsing up to four times weekly. They always land in with a smile.” And it isn’t the first time the local group have staged the musical, she added. “This is the second time, having first produced it in 2000. And amazingly our Joseph this time around, namely the super
talented Rory Ward, was in our children's chorus in that production. There are many of our cast in Joseph for the second time with KMS so it holds many special memories for many of us on stage this year,” she said. KMS has a pop up shop open for pre-purchase of tickets in Noelle's Cafe, under the clock at the Market Cross, Old Market Lane, Killarney, she added. “It is open Monday to Saturday inclusive from 12 noon to 4pm daily, so pop in and get your tickets for this amazing show.”
Devoted flock to see Padre Pio’s ‘healing’ glove | By Michelle Crean Hundreds of devoted parishioners descended on the Church of the Resurrection, Killarney on Monday night for a blessing St Padre Pio’s miracle glove. Contained in a frame, the special fingerless glove, was the focal point of the evening, as hundreds queued for up to two hours to receive a blessing. The saint was known to have had numerous ‘healing gloves’ that he’d worn over many years to cover stigmata like wounds in both his hands. The event, which was organised by Michael Clifford from the Killarney St Pio Prayer Group, began with rosary, followed by Mass, Benediction and then the blessing of the glove. “We’d a packed house, it was a lovely night,” Michael told the Killarney Advertiser.
“People were even coming in after Mass for the blessing from Fr John Kerins and Fr Kieran O’Brien. Some queued for over two hours for a blessing and we finished up at approximately 11pm.” He added that there was a huge number of young people present. “It was great to see so many young people there. I also met a number of people who were on the pilgrimage in previous years.” The group are now making preparations for their annual trip to San Giovani, which includes a trip to Lourdes, Benevento where St Pio was ordained, onto Pietrelcina where he was born then to Piana Romana where he had a little farm, San Giovani where he lived, and onto Mugnano where there’s a shrine to St Philomena. Anyone interested in going on this year’s trip can contact Michael on 085 1309835.

Irish dance event a huge boost to local economy A week-long Irish dancing event is estimated to be worth between €5m and €7m to the local economy. This week the All-Ireland Irish Dancing Championships 2020 Oireachtas Rince na hÉireann are taking place in the Gleneagle INEC Arena – with competitors travelling to the town from around the globe. The week-long Irish dancing event which has dancers ranging in age from nine years to senior will compete in solo and team competitions - commenced on Sunday and runs until tomorrow (Saturday). It is organised by An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha and expected to bring in excess of 3000 competitors and 7000 spectators. The event, which was established in 1932, is the longest running major competition in the Irish dance calendar and is the oldest event of its kind in the world.
Such is the popularity and status of the championships that the majority of the competitors in attendance are actually from outside the island of Ireland. “We are honoured to welcome back the All-Ireland Irish Dancing Championships to Killarney for the third year in a row,” Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of The Gleneagle Group, said. “We thank An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG) for choosing our town once again and guarantee that this huge influx of competitors and visitors will have a fantastic week here.” James McCutcheon, Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee added that they are delighted to return again. “Killarney has successfully hosted 12 championships in the past and a feast of Irish music and dance is assured,” James said.

Growing microgreens without soil is so easy There are two ways to grow microgreens, either hydroponically (without soil), or in trays of compost. Firstly, those grown without soil are technically called sprouts. Very little space is needed, only a piece of the windowsill. You can buy specially designed sprouting trays; I have three which stack on top of each other taking up less space than a dinner plate. These trays have a valve and grooves, so that just the right amount of water is left behind for optimum growth. There are also jars which you can get; these have a special vented lid and stand at a forty-five degree angle, again so that air can circulate. Alternatively, if you are starting off, and you’re not sure it’s for you, you can just use a wide glass jar and replace the lid with a piece of muslin held in place with an elastic band. Next, buy seeds. The best are organic ones specially for sprouting, as many regular seeds are treated with fungicides, and you will be eating the
whole thing. Sprouting seeds are readily available in any health food shop. Place an amount into the jar, bearing in mind that they will grow and soak for about six hours. It will usually tell you on the back of the packet. Then rinse with clean water, at least twice a day, and days later your crop will be ready! Microgreens such as wheatgrass and pea shoots need compost to grow. Fill a tray with about an inch of compost and spread your seeds on top of it - they can be close together as the plant is not going to grow to a large size. Cover with a thin layer of compost. Keep well watered and within a few days they will germinate. Within two weeks you will be able to cut the shoots. Many seeds can be used and alfalfa is a great one to start with. Radish, kale, cress, mustard and sunflowers are all excellent, as are lentils, mung beans and fenugreek. The list is endless, visit: themicrogardener.com, a great guide for beginners!

Out of Africa and back to Killarney for the BIG 60!! The Government of The Republic of Liberia is working closely with development partners to undertake ambitious measures to rebuild its electricity infrastructure.

Four cousins celebrate together
Liberia’s civil war, which ended in 2003, destroyed much of the country’s power sector. At approximately 12 percent, Liberia has one of the lowest electricity access rates in the world. In the capital city of Monrovia, less than 20 percent of the population has access to electricity. It is a big task but someone has got to do it. One local man, Mike Sheehan, is at the centre of it all as an employee of ESB International. But he took some time out to return home to Woodlawn last week to celebrate his 60th birthday. He has been in the West African nation since last June where he works as a project manager bringing rural electrification to villages in the country. Prior to his
current tour of duty he has spent time in other West African countries like Ghana and other spells in Tanzania in East Africa. On Friday night last Mike celebrated his 60th birthday with his wife Eileen, daughter Cáelainn, sons Bryan and Alan Sheehan, and family and friends in The Killarney Avenue Hotel. And he said that it was great to be home to celebrate with fthem all. “It was great to be home, this is a milestone birthday and it was important to celebrate it at home with family and close friends,” Mike told the Killarney Advertiser this week. Yesterday (Thursday) he started making his return to journey to the West African country.
Saturday was a big day for the extended Cremin family of Rathmore and Gneeveguilla who celebrated the baptism of four cousins at the same time. Mary and Kieran Cremin baptised their twins Nadine and Alanna on the same day as Kieran’s sister Aisling Cremin and her partner Kyle Kennedy baptised baby Grace Kennedy, and his other sister Brenda and her husband Anthony Millar christened Aaron. Celebrations started with the ceremony at St Mary’s Church in Rathmore before the large extended family moved the party to the International Hotel. “My husband’s two sisters had babies around the same time so we decided to have one big celebration,” said Mary Cremin, mother of the twins and sevenyear-old Adam. “It is great that they will all have a cousin their own age to grow up and play with.”
Three of the four babies were born within a day of each other. The twins, Nadine and Alanna, were born in Cork on September 17, less than 24 hours after Aaron Miller arrived in the world. Grace Kennedy was born two months later, on November 7, also in Tralee. The christening was also a busy day too for the separate sets of grandparents. Jerry and Mary Cremin were the busiest, with four new grandchildren to care for. They were joined on the day by Mary’s parents Eddie and Nora Nagle from Rathmore, Anthony’s parents Tony and Carmel Miller from Limerick and Kyle’s parents Joan and John Kennedy from Tralee.

Gentefied
Actress
RELEASED: FEBRUARY 21
By Anne Enright
‘Gentefied’ is an American comedy-drama web television series created by Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, set to premiere on Netflix on February 21. It explores the gentrification battles that have roiled Boyle Heights in recent years. But the story of how the series came to be starts a few miles
northwest, in East Hollywood. Gentrification, as depicted in pop culture, tends to be a conflict between strangers. Three Latino cousins navigate their differences as they work to keep their grandfather's taco shop afloat in their rapidly gentrifying LA neighbourhood.
listen Monsta X ‘All About Luv’ South Korean boy group Monsta X, formed through the reality survival program No.Mercy, have just launched their first-ever English album and the list of songs proved that they had prepared nothing less than spectacular for their fans! Bringing a total of eleven tracks, ‘All About Luv’ includes various singles released by the group like
‘Who Do U Love?’ (featuring French Montana), and a Will.I.Am remix version will also serve as a bonus track on the album. From the Booker-winning Irish author, a brilliant and moving novel about fame, power, and a daughter's search to understand her mother's hidden truths. This is the story of Irish theatre legend Katherine O'Dell, as told by her daughter Norah. It tells of early stardom in Hollywood, of highs and lows on the stages of Dublin and London's West End. Katherine's life is a grand performance, with young Norah watching from the wings. But this romance between mother and daughter cannot survive Katherine's past, or the world's damage. As Norah uncovers her mother's secrets, she acquires a few of her own. Then, fame turns to infamy when Katherine decides to commit a bizarre crime. ‘Actress’ is about a daughter's search for the truth: the dark secret in the bright star, and what finally drove Katherine mad. Brilliantly capturing the glamour of post-war America and the shabbiness of 1970s Dublin, ‘Actress’ is
an intensely moving, disturbing novel about mothers and daughters and the men in their lives. Anne Enright won the Man Booker Prize and the Irish Fiction Award for her novel ‘The Gathering’, which became a longtime national bestseller in Canada. She has published two books of short stories, collected as ‘Yesterday's Weather’, and six novels, including ‘The Forgotten Waltz’, which was shortlisted for The Orange Prize and awarded the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and most recently ‘The Green Road’, which won the Irish Fiction Award. Anne Enright lives in Dublin.

Nutrition isn’t all black and white When we work with nutrition clients it’s not a binary thing: “eat this, don’t eat that” – as this type of nutritional intervention doesn’t stand up to life. I’ve had numerous discussions about this very topic with my coaching clients lately, and I think it’s an important one. Yes, of course, when the goal is fat loss, you need to be in a consistent calorie deficit over time. But even so, making the conscientious decision to deviate from your nutrition program for a day, a weekend, or a week is not always considered a loss. I’ve found myself oftentimes congratulating my clients on making these kinds of choices for themselves when it comes down to prioritising their quality of life and overall happiness. Sure, you can simultaneously live your life and also stay on plan with your diet to an extent - but this depends on the programme you’re on, how far into fat loss you are, what the occasion is, and so on. And yes, ideally, you’d want to keep these instances to a minimum if you want to make considerable progress in the fat loss department. Choose your nights
out rather than go out every weekend, choose when you have a few glasses of wine, rather than default to having a bottle with your spouse every Friday evening etc. Skipping out on your best friend’s birthday party just so you can stay home and nail your calories and macros and avoid temptation is not considered a win in my book. Face planting into a box of croissants at work over lunch because you failed to take the time to plan and prep your meals in advance is also not considered a win. There are so many “yes, but” and “sure, however” statements I could plug in here. Suffice to say that the matter of balancing dietary adherence to achieve results while also not missing out too much on life is a nuanced one. This is where the art of coaching comes into play. While our job is in part to help you, the client, achieve your goal, it’s also our responsibility to help them see the bigger picture and take your overall well-being into consideration. Ghost ship washed up off Cork coast A 77m abandoned cargo ship washed up on the Irish coast during Storm Dennis on Sunday.
Liebherr Cranes ready to be installed in Port of Cork Two Liebherr post-panamax size STS container gantry cranes – built in Killarney – have been delivered to the Port of Cork. The cranes have an outreach of 45m, a back reach of 15m and a lift height over rail of 32m. The cranes are in the process of being assembled, and are due to be completed in the coming weeks. “Liebherr Container Cranes in Killarney have been working with the Port of Cork for more than 50 years, and their port

cranes, ship-to-shore container cranes, and rubber tyre gantry cranes have been integral to making us the most seamless trade gateway in Ireland,” Henry Kingston, Port Engineering Manager of the Port of Cork said. “Our first-hand experience of the top quality of Liebherr products and the first class after sales service back-up were key factors in influencing the decision to choose Liebherr for this project,” he added. David Griffin Managing Director, Sales,
Liebherr Container Cranes, added that these new cranes are fitted with the latest energy saving Liebherr Liduro drives, power management systems and safety features available in today’s STS crane markets. “Liebherr Container Cranes are industry leaders in terms of their high reliability, low downtimes and low maintenance and running costs, and will serve Cork Container Terminal well into the future,” he said.
The ship took its time before coming to Ireland as it has been seen off the Americas, Africa and Europe. The ship washed up near Ballycotton, a village in County Cork. Experts from the local Council, the Irish Coast Guard and Ireland’s Commissioner of Wrecks were all in talks about what to do with the cargo ship. “Cork County Council is asking members of the public to stay away from the wreck location as it is situated on a dangerous and inaccessible stretch of coastline and is in an unstable condition,” the Council said. Environmental scientists who visited the area on Monday did not see visible pollution, the Council said. “Any risk in relation to oil, other hazardous substances and pollution from the vessel will be evaluated.”
Trump offers Assange a pardon Donald Trump offered WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange a pardon if he would say Russia was not involved in leaking Democratic party emails, a court in London has been told. Assange's lawyer has said that Dana Rohrabacher appears to be working on Mr Trump's orders in proposing clemency. In exchange, it has been said that the president wanted Assange to say that Russia was not involved in releasing emails during the 2016 US election. Assange’s lawyers alleged that during a visit to London in August 2017, congressman Dana Rohrabacher told
the WikiLeaks founder that “on instructions from the president, he was offering a pardon or some other way out, if Mr Assange said Russia had nothing to do with the Democratic National Committee (DNC) leaks”. But former California congressman Mr Rohrabacher dismissed the claims. "At no time did I talk to President Trump about Julian Assange. Likewise, I was not directed by Trump, or anyone else connected with him, to meet with Julian Assange," he said in a statement. Leaked emails released by Wikileaks
ahead of the 2016 vote included embarrassing details about the Democratic Party, and its presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, was seen as damaging. Assange has previously denied obtaining the information from the Kremlin, even though Russian intelligence agents were charged with leaking in the US. Assange is wanted to face 18 charges in America over the release of US cables a decade ago, including conspiring to commit network interference. If found guilty he could face up to 175 years in prison.

It’s the latest fundraising idea by local Parish Priest Father Kevin McNamara and his parishioners hope to build on recent successful concerts given by Phil Coulter, The Three Tenors; Michael English and Aonghus McAnally respectively. Liam O'Connor is a multi-instrumentalist musician, often referred to as "the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion". The Liam O’Connor performance is an explosive collection of music, song and dance, root-
ed in the Irish music tradition. Also appearing on the night as special guest star is singer/songwriter Brian Kennedy, long established as one of Ireland's finest singers. He has performed alongside Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Ray Charles and Bob Dylan and his unique voice makes him a very special and in-demand talent. His numerous hits include; ‘Put The Message In The Box’, ‘A Better Man’, and ‘You Raise Me Up’ to name just a few. The Belfast-born singer also represented Ireland at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest with a song called ‘Every Song Is A Cry for Love’. A special evening of musical entertainment is guaranteed for those in attendance. Tickets cost €25 and are available from the local parish office by contacting 068 49308.
GAA President launches new TG4 Laochra Gael series The definitive GAA sports series ‘Laochra Gael’ returns to TG4 this spring for the 18th series. The hour-long format has proved a huge success, bringing each player’s personal stories to screen. The series features six Laochra with genuine star quality and reveals deeper, fresh and sometimes unexpected insights into the lives of these icons. While their sporting careers continue to provide the backdrop to the story, the series travels well beyond the four white lines. Gripping personal storylines will compel viewers to travel towards territory unique to the GAA television landscape. Six brand new programmes, featuring six legends who performed heroics on the field and who each have a unique and extraordinary story to tell. Kieran Donaghy’s ‘On the Edge’ will feature at 9.30pm, on Thursday, March 5.
The man called ‘Star’ has an extraordinary story: breaking through with the ‘Underdogs’, the experiment that made a full forward out of him, the basketball hands, the decline and the revival, and of course, Joe Brolly. In his career, Kieran won four All-Ireland medals, three All-Stars and ‘Footballer of the Year’. Participants include; Deirdre Donaghy, Paul Galvin, Micheál Quirke, Éamonn Fitzmaurice, Joe McMahon, Vincent Hogan and Michael Moynihan. “It is great that these players get to tell their stories through this television series and that new generations of young people can get to know them and to get to learn about their achievements,” Uachtarán CLG John Horan said. “This series ensures that the legacy of these great players will live long in the memory.”
With preparations well under way for the June festival, organisers are planning a number of fundraisers to raise funds. All are invited to The Plough Bar in Milltown for a quiz next Friday, February 28 at 8.30pm. PRO Chris Horan said that Fleadh quizzes are known to be a great night out. "It will be great fun, with novelty rounds and great spot prizes, and we always provide something different, so save the
date." Chairman Vincent Prendergast reminds us to keep June 17 to 21 in mind for some fantastic free entertainment for all ages. "We are planning a program of free family entertainment for the weekend, and intend to spend over €12,000 on top international traditional acts as well as locally based talent. We want to celebrate our traditions in a way that's accessible to everyone." The committee will be announcing their headline acts for this festival of trad in Milltown in the coming weeks.
WINNERS: Fleadh quiz winners in Faha Court Bar, from left: Turlough O'Brien with winners Kate Landers, Liz Williams and Andrew Pigott, with Louise O'Shea. Back: Fleadh 2020 Chairman Vincent Prendergast with winning team member Adrian Williams.

Getting the skincare combination right Skincare is one of the most essential parts of your beauty routine as it sets you up for a perfect make up application. It’s so important to have the correct products to get the best results. Professional facials, plus correct homecare equals beautiful, brighter, fresh, glowing, ageing defying skin. Having a professional skincare consultation can give you the correct tools to improve your skin quickly. Often we could have two to three issues going on with skin so it’s important to know what to treat first to get the best results. For example, if a client suffers with oily skin, but be surface dehydrated and needs anti-ageing - where do you start? Cleansing and toning thoroughly is very important. Always exfoliate once a week and deep cleanse once a week on different nights. A good base will take in the serum for results., using eye and neck cream after serum, followed by day cream or night cream that suits you requirements. The best type of night cream will have vitamin C for brightening and alpha hydroxy acids (Aha) for exfoliating while you sleep. Hyaluronic acid for hydration is a favourite at the moment as it works for 24 hours. When you wake up in the morning you should feel like you have just applied your night cream, otherwise it’s either

not allied corrected, not the correct cream for your skin type, or the cleansing and exfoliating stage was not done thoroughly enough. Practice makes perfect, it is possible to get it right. Don’t give up, just keep trying until you get the correct combination for your own personal skin. For a consultation call Jill 064 6632966.

You’ll never have to cut the grass again… Do you want the perfect lawn? The STIHL iMow robotic lawn mower will look after that for you with great ease. With seven models in the range, the iMow can get to work on lawns of up to one acre in size. How does it work, you ask? During mowing, iMow shreds the grass clippings finely, which fall back onto the lawn and act as an effective fertiliser (known as mulching). Not only does this provide vital nourishment to help grow a healthy lawn, it also means there are no clippings to collect or dispose of.
Once the work is done or the battery needs charging, it automatically returns to the docking station and charges itself to go back out cutting again. You can also stay connected with the STIHL iMow. On the ‘C’ models, you can operate the iMow through the iMow App on a smartphone or tablet. So, gone are the days of walking endlessly up and down the garden - thanks to the STIHL iMow. TEAM REEN: John Reen of Reen’s Car Sales Rathmore presents Sean O’Shea, Kerry footballer, with the keys of a new Peugeot 3008 Allure. Also in the picture is Tim Reen
Sean O’Shea captivated by Peugeot’s 3008 Allure Kerry footballing sharp-shooter Sean O’Shea has been named a Peugeot brand ambassador by Reen’s Cars Sales in Rathmore. O’Shea was given the keys of a new Peugeot 3008 Allure by the Reen Family. The family owned firm, the current Peugeot ‘Dealer of the Year’ and their third time winning the coveted award, is run by diehard Kerry GAA fans, John and Tim Reen. The father and son team are a formidable outfit when it comes to customer services but the addition of the Kenmare Shamrock’s star half-forward will help the squad as they strive for four-in-a-row at the annual Peugeot Ireland awards later in the year. “A huge sales success in Europe already and with 17 international awards under its belt, demand for the new Peugeot 3008 is outstripping supply in every country
where it has already been launched,” said Des Cannon, Managing Director at Gowan Distributors Limited, Peugeot Importers in Ireland. Allure versions, include standard safety items like Active Blind Spot Detection (ABSD), Active Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA), and Advanced Driver Attention Alert (DAA3). Of course, these are all attributes that come naturally to O’Brien. During last year’s All-Ireland football final he had 11 shots at goal and 10 of them went over the bar…there is no doubt his blind spot awareness is as good as it needs to be. His ability to keep within the while lines of the playing pitch shows he does not need lane keeping assistance. But being a Kerry footballer is a rare honour and these safety features on the Peugeot 3008 Allure will make Kerry roads safer.

Extra speed camera zones in Killarney – warning signs removed | By Sean Moriarty
Brand new BMW 2 Series on Kerry roads Eagle-eyed car enthusiasts would have spotted the brand new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé on Kerry roads earlier this week. The new BMW, which is not due into Irish showrooms until late March, was on a whistle-stop tour of Ireland this week and spent a few hours at Ahern’s Garage in Castleisland on Tuesday morning. The 2-series Gran Coupe is an all-new model in the BMW line-up. Rather than borrowing the bones of the 2-series coupe and convertible, it uses the same platform as the X1 and the X2 subcompact SUVs. It features the latest front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive architecture also
seen in the BMW 1 Series, along with an array of other technological developments. “The car was on a special pre-launch tour of Ireland from Germany,” Paul Ahern told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a lovely car and represents great value for the package and style of car. Tuesday was the first time the car was seen in Kerry.” Prices start from €35,165 on the road. 5 Year/100000kms Service Pack also available for €429 as well as a range of very competitive Finance Options from 3.9% APR from Aherns BMW, Tralee Road, Castleisland. 066 7143000 www. ahernsbmw.ie, Kerry’s main BMW dealer.
Every approach road in and out of Killarney is now covered by safety camera zones with nearly 50 new zones - announced by An Garda Síochána in the county this week. Several new locations have been chosen for privately operated speed enforcement cameras, and speed vans will be in a position on an extended number of locations on all roads in and out of town. Signs advising motorists where the speed checks will no longer be used. “This is about saving lives and preventing injuries, not about catching people,” a Road Safety Authority spokesperson said. “The only objective of the safety camera project is to change driver behaviour and save lives.” The safety zone on the Tralee road has been extended to include every section from the Cleeney Roundabout to the Boolacullane turn-off near the Johnny
Doyle Industrial Park. The entire Muckross Road, and by extension the Moll’s Gap road, as far as Galway’s Bridge near Derrycunnihy Church, is included in the new zone. Additionally, the section of road at Moll’s Gap, on the approach and on both the Sneem and Kenmare sides of the junction will be covered by mobile speed detection vans. While the village of Fossa was included as a safety zone in the past, this has now been extended out as far as the Beaufort junction and a separate zone is included on the Milltown road near the old German Butcher Shop. The Cork Road will now be covered from the Lissivigeen junction to beyond the Loo Bridge – Kenmare Road junction and will also extend out the Mallow Road to nearly as far as Rathmore. Other locations include the entire length of the bypass road, including its junction with the Coolcorcoran Road to its junction with the Kilcummin road and the entire length of New Street.

Scotts Lakers National League home game against Fr Mathews has been confirmed for The Pres Gym, Killarney tomorrow (Saturday), at 7.30pm. The Cork side defeated the Lakers 84-72 in Cork last November and the Lakers will be anxious to make amends for that result. The Killarney side are in second place on the league table with a 16-4 winning record after 20 matches while their nearest challengers are Fr Mathews on a 13-5 winning record after 18 games played. A win will guarantee second spot for the Lakers and an opportunity of a play-off for the SuperLeague. Fr Mathews have to win this and their other games in hand to keep any play-off hopes alive but home advantage should be a big boost for Scotts Lakers here.

improve road
At the February monthly meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Michael Gleeson proposed that Kerry County Council calls once again on the TII to provide a long overdue new surface on the N22 National Primary Road from Clonkeen to Killarney. Kerry County Council replied that TII utilise a Pavement Management System to identify sections of the national network where surface improvements will be funded. The section of the N22 from Park Road Roundabout to Lissivigeen Roundabout has been identified for Pavement Improvements and it is hoped that funding will be secured and the works carried out in 2020.

Killarney School of Music launch new StageWorks Choir Killarney School of Music is excited to announce the launch of their new StageWorks Choir - to develop all aspects of achieving excellence in live stage performance. The new choir will be directed by Siobhain Bustin, who has recently come onboard with the Killarney School of Music. Piano accompaniment is provided by Miriam Fell. “The aim of StageWorks is to develop all aspects of achieving excellence in live stage performance,” Tadhg Buckley from the school said. “This will include working with live accompaniment, vocal arrangements, harmony, use of amplification, audience
interaction and more. Siobhain, who recently played the lead role of Maria in ‘The Sound of Music’ with Killarney Musical Society, has a particular passion for developing students’ confidence and the vocal stamina needed for live performances. She also brings a wealth of performance experience and has studied singing for over 12 years.” Live performances are an integral part of StageWorks, he added. “Students will have the opportunity to perform concert style productions in quality venues to attentive audiences in the Killarney vicinity.” To find out more about StageWorks Choir visit www.killarneyschoolofmusic. com.

What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is about bringing all our attention to the present moment, to whatever we happen to be doing right now. As human beings, we have a strong tendency to get caught up with over-thinking, constantly thinking ahead and very often worrying incessantly. On the other hand, our over-thinking is also often about events that have already passed, what we think we should have done or said…. What would it be like to simply pause, slow down, take a breath and give yourself some headspace? Coming on a mindfulness course allows you to do just this.
CHOIR: Killarney School of Music's new StageWorks Choir will be directed by Siobhain Bustin.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Classes are relaxed and slow in pace and designed to introduce you to a range of mindfulness practices. You can expect to learn how to bring awareness to your breathing so that it can support you in times of stress as well as learning a gentle mindful movement practice. You will

begin to pay attention to your own reactions to some of the events in your life, in particular those that trigger stress. Each class allows time for reflection and discussion. However, mindfulness is nothing like group therapy and there is never any pressure to speak in front of others. Mindfulness is firmly rooted in scientific research and psychology and much has been learned in recent years about the capacity of our minds to develop new ways of responding. In my experience, almost everyone can benefit from mindfulness, even those who feel that their minds are constantly racing. All that is required is an open mind and a willingness to give it a go, and classes are usually fun as well! I hope to see you soon!

Royal welcome Kerry seeking improvements against bottom-of-the-table Meath It has been a fairly lethargic start to 2020 for Peter Keane’s Kerry, but perhaps that was to be expected. The squad reconvened later than usual (“we’ve nothing done” were Keane’s exact words ahead of Round 1 of the league), so it would be unreasonable to expect them to shoot out of the blocks and blitz the competition as they did in 2019. Three points from their opening two matches against Dublin and Galway
A home game in Killarney should provide Kerry with the ideal opportunity to throw off the shackles.
FLASHBACK: Tom O'Sullivan of Kerry shoots for a score against Meath during the Super 8s match in August 2019. Pic: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile.
was perhaps a larger haul then Kerry deserved, and they subsequently fell to a tough, one-point defeat up in Tyrone. It would be harsh to single anyone out for criticism following that particular game – conditions were incredibly challenging on the day – but it would also be quite difficult to single anyone out for a whole pile of praise. A home game in Killarney should provide Kerry with the ideal opportunity
to throw off the shackles and get their season up and running, especially considering their opponents’ record so far. Newly promoted Meath have lost all three of their games to date and with Galway, Dublin and Monaghan still to play, their stay in Division 1 could well be a short one. Kerry will be expecting to win, but their manager will be looking for a performance to go along with it.

Kingdom must plug their leaky defence
Kerry have the forwards to succeed but their backs need help, writes Eamonn Fitzgerald There are two very attractive football games on offer this weekend. Kerry play Meath in Round 4 of the National Football League in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday and tomorrow (Saturday) the Corn Uí Mhuiri final between St Brendan’s College and Tralee CBS will go ahead at Dr Crokes’ pitch (see p58). Let’s hope the weather won’t interfere with the schedule. As we wrote in the preview for the Galway game in Tralee, Kerry must win their home games to qualify for the March 29 final.
EXPERIMENTATION
There is always some experimentation in the league as Kerry look ahead to the championsip match away to Cork and, hopefully, progression to the All-Ireland series.
Peter Keane and his management team will be using the league to help establish a settled winning combination for the summer. The forwards are good, especially with David Clifford, Seán O’Shea and James O’Donoghue in such scoring form. There are other options, too, with Dara Moynihan and Kilcummin’s Kevin McCarthy also in the frame. Paul Geaney has not played well for over a year, even though he did score that all-important goal against Galway which set up an unexpected victory. Dublin’s midfield is strong, especially with Brian Fenton who is well able to come forward and score. David Moran will have to sit out the league campaign as he recovers from surgery undergone during Christmas. He is the oldest member of the team, aged 31, so how much
more will we get out of him? Maybe just a half a game in the frenetic pace of summer football? Jack Barry did well last year but has not regained that form after a long All-Ireland Club campaign with Na Gaeil. Liam Kearney is establishing himself and Diarmuid O’Connor is also an option.
TRACKING BACK
The defence has been much-maligned. The forwards are putting up good scores, but the defence is leaking too many scores. The backs are particularly vulnerable conceding goals to oppositions that run at them. In the modern era of the running game, it is very hard for a centre back in particular to mark space and mark his man in this dual function for this position. Tim Kennelly performed this dual role very well, but it was a different game back then. In support of the backs, I have observed that their jobs are made far more difficult
with extra opposition players joining in on the attack. Running off the shoulder is hard to combat. There is a strong onus on the Kerry forwards and midfield to track back when an attack breaks down, so that the impact of the extra attacker is minimised. Mick O’Dwyer always preached that to his Golden Years teams. A forward must be a defender when the need arises. Look back to the game in Tralee where a Galway corner back was allowed to come upfield unchallenged and link up with his forwards before shooting a morale-boosting first-half goal. Donie Buckley has plenty of work to do with the backs. Are there any hitherto untried defenders out there worth trying? Maybe the county league, which is starting next month, will unearth someone. Kerry will be expected to win on Sunday against Meath but with bigger challenges ahead, the gaps will have to be plugged.

Kerry release new blue and lime away shirt | By Adam Moynihan
Kerry GAA have released their new alternate outfield and goalkeeper shirts for 2020. The new gear signals a return to The Kingdom’s traditional away colour of blue while also incorporating some eye-catching lime green trim. The stylish new shirt will be complemented by white shorts with blue trim. The keeper shirt, which will be worn by senior stars Shane Ryan and Brian Kelly, is lime green with blue trim. As has been the case for a number of years, the jerseys are manufactured by O’Neills and sponsored by Kerry Group. O’Neills have now produced Kerry’s gear for the past 20 years in a row, having previously been usurped by Millfield and Adidas in the mid-to-late-nineties. Kerry Group’s logo has graced the Kerry jersey since 1991. The distinctive new designs have apparently been received positively by the majority of fans. In a poll carried out by this journalist on Instagram (@ adammoynihan), two-thirds of supporters said that they liked the new change strip. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Kerry GAA Store manager Luke Quinn said that the jersey has gotten a “great reaction” so far. “Sales in-store and online have been very positive,” he said. “Kerry fans seem to be delighted that it’s gone back
to blue and the lime trim puts a nice, modern twist on it. The lime goalkeeper jersey has proven especially popular with the younger Kerry supporters.” The new alternate outfield and goalkeeper jerseys are available to purchase online at kerrygaastore.ie and in the Kerry GAA Store in the Killarney Outlet Centre. Morning start for high-flying ladies LADIES NFL: DIV 2
_________________________________________________________________________
Kerry v Tyrone Sunday at 11am Fitzgerald Stadium
| By Adam Moynihan The Kerry ladies will be up bright and early on Sunday morning in preparation for their National League Round 4 match against Tyrone, which takes place at the unusually early time of 11am. With the second part of the double-header (the men’s tie between Kerry and Meath) being brought forward to 1pm,
the ladies had no choice but to follow suit and officials and players will be hoping that the early throw-in time doesn’t affect the attendance. Kerry’s ladies are in fine form at the moment and a home win in front of a healthy home crowd would be a major boost as they look to regain their top flight status for the first time since 2018.
FORM
The Kingdom have started 2020 in terrific form. A thrilling opening day victory over Cavan (4-8 to 3-10) was followed by a facile 26-point win against Wexford, and last weekend’s triumph over Armagh in Tralee leaves Darragh Long and Declan
Quill’s side top of Division 2 with nine points from nine. There were plenty of positives to take from that most recent result, perhaps most notably the number of different names on the scoresheet. Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh (1-2) and Niamh Ní Chonchúir (1-1) top scored for the hosts in Tralee as Hannah O’Donoghue (0-2), Emma Dineen (0-2), Fiadhna Tangney, Aishling O’Connell, Lorraine Scanlon, Eilish O’Leary and Andrea Murphy all found the target in a hard-fought 2-12 to 2-10 win. Confidence is high but they won’t have it easy against Tyrone, who have a bit
of a run going themselves recently after successful outings against Armagh and Clare.
POSSIBLE KERRY TEAM: E O’Sullivan (Southern Gaels); C O’Brien (Laune Rangers), A Desmond (Rathmore), A Doherty (Glenflesk); A O’Connell (Éire Óg), L Coughlan (Rathmore), C Murphy (MKL Gaels); L Scanlon (Castleisland Desmonds), A Galvin (Southern Gaels, captain); E Dineen (Glenflesk), N Ní Chonchúir (Corca Dhuibhne), E O’Leary (Kilcummin); H O’Donoghue (Beaufort), F Tangney (Beaufort), L Ní Mhuircheartaigh (Corca Dhuibhne).

FINAL: St Brendan's College defender Terry Sparling in action in last year's Corn Uí Mhuirí decider against Dingle.
| By Adam Moynihan
History awaits Sem boys A new page in the annals of Tralee and Killarney’s great sporting rivalry will be written tomorrow afternoon when Tralee CBS take on St Brendan’s College in the final of this year’s Corn Uí Mhuirí. There’s no denying that a perennial sporting enmity exists between teams from Kerry’s two biggest towns and in many ways the battles between these schools are Killarney versus Tralee in its purest form. For the majority of the current crop of Sem players, tomorrow will be their last chance to represent Killarney (more or less) against Tralee (more or less); they will play club games
CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ FINAL
_________________________________________________________________________
St Brendan’s v Tralee CBS Saturday at 2pm Fitzgerald Stadium against Tralee clubs but that’s not quite the same. With major silverware and a place in the All-Ireland semi-final also on the line, both sets of youngsters will be keen to leave their mark.
REMATCH
The Sem and the Green met in the group stages of this season’s Corn Uí Mhuirí and the Killarney school eventually prevailed after a thrilling encounter in Connolly Park. Powered by primary scoring threats
Seán Quilter (Austin Stacks) and Fergal O’Brien (St Pat’s), the Tralee lads led by 2-11 to 1-12 with 10 minutes to play but five straight points by Terry Sparling (Dr Crokes), Tom Doyle (Dr Crokes), Ryan O’Grady (Legion - two) and Harry Buckley (Fossa) secured a stunning away win. Tralee qualified for the last eight regardless and made light work of Árdscoil Uí Urmoltaigh Bandon before just about coming out the right side of an epic battle with Rathmore in the semi-final. The Sem saw off the challenge of St Flannan’s in the quarters and not even two own goals could stop them in the last four against Rochestown as they ran out four-point winners.
HAMMERED
The Killarney side are searching for their first Munster title at this level since 2017
when they hammered tomorrow’s opposition in the decider, thanks in part to David Shaw and Donnchadh O’Sullivan who contributed 1-4 and 0-7 respectively. The wait for the Green has been much longer. You have to go all the way back to 2007 for their last Corn Uí Mhuirí triumph, when Alan O’Donoghue and Barry John Keane helped them to victory over the Sem in Austin Stack Park. They would go on to lose to Omagh in the Hogan Cup final. The prospect of making it back to Croke Park looms large for both of these famous schools but first they’ll have to duke it out in the Fitzgerald Stadium. For one set of players, history awaits. For the other, their final taste of Killarney v Tralee will not be a sweet one.
Top women’s sides to visit Kerry for soccer fundraiser | By Adam Moynihan Leading Women’s National League teams Cork City and DLR Waves will play an exhibition match in Castleisland this weekend as part of a fundraiser for the Kerry Girls Soccer League. Cork’s U17s will also take on their Wexford Youths counterparts on what promises to be an action-packed day, which will include educational workshops for players as well special training sessions
with top level coaches. The action kicks off at George O’Callaghan Park tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am and runs all day until 9pm at night. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Director of Football for the Kerry Girls Soccer League Noel White said the day’s activities are aimed at educating and inspiring the stars of the future. “There will be a bit of everything on the day,” he explains. “The U17 match will take place at 12 and the senior game at 7. Around those matches there will be a number of workshops and coaching ses-
sions. Top chef Paul Treyvaud will give nutritional advice for athletes, Dr John Chute will give a presentation on ACL injury prevention and Ireland’s U17 manager James Scott will also be on hand to talk about the international soccer scene. “James and Cork City manager Ronan Collins will take sessions with our U13 and U15 squads and people are welcome to come along and watch and maybe pick up a few things from them.” The women’s game has experienced a surge in popularity globally and Noel says that numbers have exploded in this part
of the world too. “Girls’ soccer in Kerry is growing year on year,” Noel says. “Clubs are telling us that they’ve seen a 100% increase in their playing population in recent times. I think a lot of that has to do with last year’s Women’s World Cup and hopefully seeing top teams like Cork City and DLR Waves up close will inspire some young Kerry girls as well.” For further information, check out the Kerry Girls Soccer League (@ksbgl) on Facebook.

CYCLING
Route announced for Rás Mumhan The route for Kerry’s biggest cycle race, the Kerry Group Rás Mumhan, has been revealed. The four-day event, which will be based in Killorglin, will once again run over the Easter Weekend from April 10-13. The format of the race will remain the same as last year as the 500km route will follow a tried and tested format. The opening stage, on Good Friday, will leave Killorglin at 2.50pm and race through Killarney, Kilcummin, Scartaglen, Castleisland, Currans, Ballyfinnane, Firies, Castlemaine and Milltown. A new section, over the new Milltown to Killorglin road, will allow for a new King of Hills section just 5km from the finish in Killorglin’s town square. Easter Saturday’s stage will start in Listowel and visit sections in West Limerick before the finish in Athea. On Sunday, the riders will tackle a tough
155km stage in South Kerry from Waterville to Ballinskelligs, Valentia, Cahersiveen, Dromid, New Chapel Cross, Portmagee, Coom an Easpaigh, The Glen, and on to the finish in Waterville at 3.30pm. The final day is mostly a flat stage, starting and finishing in Killorglin, with the usual sting in the tail. The 25km loop through Beaufort is covered three times and then it’s on to the final 10 laps of the town circuit and up the hill each time to add a further 40km for a total of 115km. “The crowd that turned up last year to witness this stage was huge and brought a great atmosphere to Killorglin,” Race Secretary Mary Concannon said. The Team structure is the same as last year. Teams will consist of five riders and priority will be given to teams with the highest number of A1 riders. Killarney’s Richard Maes of Team Strata 3 Velo Revolution was the highest placed Kerry rider last year.

Lakers out for revenge against Fr Mathews | By Eamonn Keogh Scotts Lakers have a big home game in Killarney this Saturday night when they welcome fellow promotion contenders Fr Mathews to the Pres Gym. The Cork side defeated the Lakers 84-72 last November and the hosts will be anxious to make amends for that particular result, while also securing second spot in the process. Victory tomorrow night will mathematically assure the Killarney side of second and a shot at the Super League. The Lakers had a long but productive road trip last weekend as they registered an 18-point win in Letterkenny on Saturday followed by a 28-point victory in Sligo on Sunday afternoon.
CYCLE: The Kerry Group Rás Mumhan will run over the Easter Weekend (April 10-13).

_________________________________________________________________________
Scotts Lakers v Fr Mathews Saturday at 7.30pm Pres Gym Scotts Hotel to discuss the future of National League basketball in Killarney turned out to be very positive, constructive and well-attended. There was a lot of enthusiasm to continue with men’s National League basketball in the town and a number of people expressed an interest to get involved at committee level and in fundraising initiatives next season. Plenty more discussion and planning will be required over the next few months to prepare for the 2020-21 season but going by the meeting turnout, there certainly appears to be strong support for the continuation of top level basketball in Killarney.

K illarney drivers all set for Abbeyleix Rally
Several Killarney-based competitors are on the entry list for Sunday’s Abbeyleix Manor Hotel Rally. The Birr and District Motor Club-organised event is the opening round of the Top Part West Coast Championship. London-based Listry co-driver Shane Buckley will be the top Kerry seed alongside Daniel Cronin in a Ford Fiesta R5. They are out on a high-speed test run ahead of Daniel’s home event, the West Cork, next month. Kenmare’s Vincent O’Shea and Eoin O'Donoghue will debut their newly acquired Darrian T90 DXE. While it is not the first Darrian in Kerry-ownership, the
car is unusual as it is fitted with a Honda engine and not the usual Ford-derived power plant. Brother and sister crew Andrew and Tara Duggan from Aghadoe make a rare start outside County Kerry in their Ford Escort. Co-driver Damien Fleming (Kilcummin) is back alongside his regular pilot, Raymond Conlon, and they will drive their usual Toyota Corolla Twin Cam, while Ger Somers will co-drive for Raymond Spence in another Escort. Killarney and District Motor Club member David Griffin is the sole Kerry driver in the historic section in his Toyota Corolla GT. Birr and District Motor Club took inspiration from last year’s Rally of the Lakes when they included a new element to their rally this year. The demonstration
rally is for rally cars of historic importance and is inspired by the RallyFest event that ran alongside the Rally of the Lakes last year. Six Killarney competitors have entered this section: Conor Falvey and Fergal Patwell in a Porsche 911 RS; Mark Falvey in a Ford RS 1600; father and son Michael and Brian Buckley in a Porsche 911Carrera RS and Todd Falvey in a Ford RS1800. |
