Coach park an “accident waiting to happen” Coach and bus operators in Killarney have hit out at Kerry County Council this week saying the entrance to a brand new coach park on Rock Road is not suitable for their vehicles. | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
The new facility, billed as one of the saviours to Killarney’s traffic problems, opened last month - but the entrance to the car park is a foot wider than the bus entrance causing serious concerns for coach drivers. Coach operators, both local and visiting tours, have been asked to park there as opposed to the old bus park adjacent to Lewis Road car park. However, drivers say the entrance for busses is too narrow and that getting into the car park takes at least two or three manoeuvres in traffic. The Rock Road entrance features two drop-down barriers and two stands placed on a central island. The entrance is 15ft 9’ wide, one foot narrower than the car park entrance - but the island is the main bone of contention. The older bus park on Lewis Road was operated without the need of the island in the middle to accommodate each side of the barrier. One local operator, Ken O’Day, who runs O’Day’s of Kerry and West Cork Bus Hire in Killarney wants the Council to remove

the central island and replace it with the same style barrier that served the Lewis Road car park for so long. “Not alone is the width an issue, but there is no central island where the cars exit,” Mr O’Day said. “There is going be an accident here and I am calling on this to be looked at and changed now before it is too late. Only the other day I saw a coach driver reversing back onto the road to make the entrance, at a time when there were cars, bicycles and pedestrians around.” Another operator, who did not want to be named, backed up O’Day’s concerns. “I need the Council for my licence so I don’t want to be making noise in my home town,” he said. “The facility is perfect and we all like the general layout of the place but the entrance and exit could be thought out better. Bigger coaches will get damaged getting in and out of the place and drivers can’t get in out in one swing. Traffic coming in and out the
Who’s the €10k winner? | By Michelle Crean Someone out there is €10,000 richer and doesn’t know it yet – as a local business won €10k in cash for one lucky customer. This week, Daly’s SuperValu on Park Road, who sold an RTÉ ONE Telly Bingo ticket before June 11, received a call asking them to take part in the popular ‘Phone Risk’ game as the Lotto couldn’t make contact with the ticket holder. Denis Tucker, Duty Manager with the
store, stepped into the breech on Tuesday and managed to scoop a €10k cash prize for the lucky punter. However, now the store and the National Lottery are calling for the winner to come forward - saying they have just 90 days to claim their prize. “Lotto contacted us on Friday,” Denis explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “The customer who bought the Telly Bingo ticket was picked out to play the phone game but Lotto couldn’t contact them and asked us to play on their behalf.”
Tralee road is being held up.” Kerry County Council are calling for patience as people adjust to any new arrangements in the town, saying that the new bus park has created 120 new car parking spaces on the old bus parking site on Lewis Road. “Kerry County Council is broadly very pleased with the response to the new bus and car park on Rock Road. Like any new arrangement, there will always be a period of adjustment and getting used to new facilities such as this,” said a Council spokesperson. “Anyone with any concerns or issues such as this can raise them with Council staff and we will be happy to discuss them. There have been some discussions with bus drivers to everyone’s mutual satisfaction. The removal of buses from the Lewis Road car park has created space for an additional 120 cars at this car park which has been very well received locally.” However, Denis, unsure which colour balls to choose in the game, sought the advice of staff member Áine Griffin who is a dab hand at the TV game. “For the rehearsal I asked Áine what I should go for and she said pick them in the order of white, black and black.” And for the real game on TV, Áine advised him to play in the same order. “She was right!,” he said. “With Phone Risk you’re guaranteed €1k but if you get the three right – it’s €10k.” The lucky winner has until Friday, September 4 to claim their prize. If you think you have the winning ticket you can claim your prize by calling the Claims Team on 01 83636 44.
INVESTIGATION: Old Market Lane in Killarney town centre was sealed off by Gardai investigating an alleged assault yesterday (Thursday) morning. Photo: Michelle Crean
Gardai investigate alleged assault Gardai in Killarney closed off a busy laneway in the town centre for several hours yesterday morning (Thursday) following an alleged assault on a female. Old Market Lane was sealed off between the early hours of Thursday morning until around midday. Access to the Lane, which runs between Market Cross and the Glebe car park, was not allowed during the forensic examination. “There was an incident there,” Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Garda Station said. “We closed it for a while to investigate. The investigation is on-going as we are trying to establish the full facts into an alleged assault on a female.”

Road closure angers business owners
Angry business owners this week say a move by Kerry County Council to close a portion of the Ring of Kerry road - just as the tourist season gets into full swing – will be detrimental to their business and put jobs at risk. | By Sean Moriarty
NEW MAYOR OF KILLARNEY: Cllr Michael Gleeson has been elected as Mayor of Killarney. Photo: Michelle Crean
Gleeson elected new Mayor of Killarney Killarney town has a new Mayor after Kerry Independent Alliance Councillor Michael Gleeson was this week elected Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District. | By Michelle Crean The announcement was made on Friday in County Buildings in Tralee with Independent Councillor Brendan Cronin selected as Leas-Cathaoirleach of Killarney MD. This week, Cllr Gleeson spoke to the Killarney Advertiser saying it was an honour to be elected Mayor. “It’s a great honour to be Mayor of the Killarney Municipal District particularly when the title includes Killarney which is internationally famous. It imposes its own obligations to represent the entire area to the highest standards possible as I believe it’s a very special place.” 73-year-old Gleeson who lives in Clasheen, was delighted to get 1,983 first preference votes at the recent local elections, and not only did he thank his wife Kathleen, who he says has been his biggest supporter, but also the strong team behind him.
“She’s been a tremendous inspiration and support to me – not just at election time. My two sisters and brother were also very actively involved in the campaign, and my Director of Elections Sean Kavanagh. I had a phenomenal team.” As Mayor, he plans to concentrate on the Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme to bring it to a satisfactory conclusion. He also hopes that the Government can provide finance for the walkway/cycleway from Ross Road to Muckross Road. “It has been a very special project of mine for years.” He also hopes to see the continued development of Killarney and Rathmore towns. “In my own immediate area I hope safety measures would be implemented in Coolcashlagh Junction. Just last Friday another accident took place there. And I hope that the Lough Lane loop walk can be developed.”
The Council have decided to close the N71 Ring of Kerry road between Torc Waterfall and the car park for Dinis Cottage from this Monday (June 24) until July 5 to facilitate emergency repairs to a section of the retaining wall and road at Dinis. There has been widespread disbelief by the people of Killarney and the business community following the announcement. In recent weeks a stop-go traffic light system was in place to keep traffic away from the partially collapsed wall. Contractors engaged will carry out the works at night “to minimise the duration of the road closure” according to a Kerry County Council statement. A diversion will be in place via the N22 (Cork Road) and Kilgarvan (R569) and advisory signage will be erected. One of the tourist businesses effected by the closure is the craft shop at Ladies View. Owner Raymond O’Shea said he understood the work has to be done but expressed disappointment at the timing. His business depends on passing trade and he also said staff would suffer too. “Safety of the road users is paramount and it would be a lot worse if there was a tragic accident there or if the road collapsed fully and we were closed for six months or more,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have no control over the works but it is going to affect business. We depend on passing trade and won’t have any during the works. We have a good team here, but they won’t get their full hours either during the works.”
The franchisee at Dinis Cottage, Denise O’Sullivan, said the closure will be detrimental to her business. She employs up to 12 people during peak hours, but has taken the decision to reduce her staff to just two people during the works. Her business is further damaged as National Park staff have taken the extra decision to close the cycle path to the cottage. Cyclists observe a one-way system to access the cottage but with the return road via the N71 now closed it is not possible to allow cyclists start the route. “It will be detrimental to my business,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am not sure it is worth staying open for the two weeks. I will have to wait and see what happens. The timing of this is ridiculous and the info we have been getting is very limited. I found out on social media. The majority of my customers come from the car park which is closed and now they have cut off the access for the cyclists too.” Access will be maintained from Killarney to Muckross House, Torc Waterfall and the ‘Cardiac Steps’ walkway. Access to Ladies’ View and Moll’s Gap will be maintained from the Kenmare/ Sneem side. The only way to access the car park for Dinis Cottage from Killarney is to make the long journey via Kilgarvan and Kenmare. “Kerry County Council, in consultation with the contractor, is endeavouring to minimise the duration of the road closure, in particular for local businesses, tourism operators and the upcoming Ring of Kerry Cycle which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 6,’ said a Council statement.
DIVERSION: Essential road works will close a portion of the Ring of Kerry road for two weeks

New charity to help preserve dignity
A brand new charitable service has been set up by a Killarney woman to help those in financial dire straits retain their dignity. | By Michelle Crean Dignity Packs Kerry was founded by Martina O'Riordan three weeks ago to give hygiene supplies to those who can’t afford life’s basics. Now she’s hoping it will become a countywide initiative and she’s looking for others to come on board to help. Martina became involved through Etain Usher from Tralee Food Aid, who runs a service that donates food to families and individuals. Etain suggested setting up the service and as Martina wanted to help others she jumped at the chance. Now she’s asking locals to donate items such as shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, shower gels, razors and shaving foam, face cloths, soap, sanitary towels and Tampons, toothbrushes and toothpaste, wet wipes and nappy sacks, which can be dropped into special collection bins at the various collection points in town.
She explained that the items donated will be placed in plain brown paper bags and dropped into emergency accommodation centres, Meals on Wheels and schools. “Etain asked if I’d like to branch into this and I set up a Facebook page three weeks ago,” Martina told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “It was friends and family helping at first but it’s growing.” Tesco Ireland, who also support Tralee Food Aid, have come on board and Martina plans to put collection bins in the New Street store in the coming days. She’s also hoping businesses could sponsor buying plain paper bags, collection bins for other locations, or allow bins to be placed in their stores. Volunteers are also welcome to help, she added. “It’s not just for people in emergency accommodation,” Martina said. “It’s the ones with high mortages that don’t have the extra funds for the basics.
HELPING OTHERS: Etain Usher (Tralee Food Aid) with Martina O'Riordan from Killarney who has set up Dignity Packs Kerry to help those in need. Photo: Michelle Crean
We don’t want to know who is getting them. We’ll get them out there to the people who need them through the centres.” She added that if she met Taoiseach Leo Varadkar that she’d ask him to meet people who are still living in poverty. “I’d like him to meet these people and realise that there’s a whole country here
that needs help. He needs to see what others are going through outside of Dublin. If we don’t do it who will? They’re not going to do it.” To donate or to enquire about sponsoring a collection bin, signage or bags, contact Martina O'Riordan on 085 1167173, via email: dignitypackskerry@gmail.com or on Facebook: Dignity Packs Kerry.
Launch of the 234th Killarney Regatta | By Michelle Crean It’s considered one of the oldest sports in Europe and on Monday night locals once again launched the Killarney Regatta – which is now in its 234th year!
REGATTA LAUNCH: At the launch of the 2019 Killarney Regatta in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Monday night were front from left: Tim Brosnan (The Handy Stores), Killarney Regatta Chairman Pat Cronin, Richard Leane (Leane's Tool Hire) and Killarney Regatta President John O'Leary. Back from left: Ulick Daly, Maurice Coffey, Kieran Murphy, Alan Lyne, Anne Tangney, Brian O'Sullivan, Kathy Brosnan, Pat O'Donoghue and Conor Griffin. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
The regatta, which uses traditional timber boats, is a very popular event in the town and this year takes place at O’Mahoney’s Point on Sunday, June 30. The launch was held in the Killarney Avenue, where the Muckross Rowing Club Ladies Crew, winners of the 1983 senior race were honoured, while the late Jimmy Mulligan Cox was fondly remembered, explained Kathy Brosnan, PRO. “The Killarney Regatta committee wish to thank all who attended the launch and presentation night,” Kathy told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had the pleasure of honouring the Muckross Ladies Crew of ’81 and ’82
and all the ladies attended.” “Two of the girls travelled from Cork on the night to share lots of memories and laughs of 38 yars ago. I can see why these ladies had the winning streak as they still have a great energy and comradery together. James Mulligan Cox was fondly remembered. It was known he called these ladies “My Lovely Girls” and very precious to him by all accounts.” Chairman Pat Cronin told lots of yarns and rowing facts, while President John O’Leary was there to present trophies, she added. “Our President John O’Leary, an amazing man, was there to present the trophies and no doubt will be on the judging stand at our regatta. All five regatta queen representatives were in attendance and will go forward for one of them to be crowned Regatta Queen 2019.”

Shock as Killarney dadof-three dies abroad The funeral of Killarney man Tom Griffin, who died suddenly while windsurfing in Portugal last week, will take place today (Friday) in O’Shea’s Funeral Home.
Deputy Michael Healy-Rae.
Healy-Rae outburst suspends Dáil Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said his much publicised row on live television in the Dáil on Wednesday is taking the limelight off the real reason he was engaging with Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe. Deputy Healy-Rae was asking the Minister for answers regarding the increase on VAT on hospitality sector services when the row broke out – suspending the Dáil for some time. The Kerry TD had been asking the Minister to keep the VAT rate under review as promised when the Government increased the charge from nine percent to 13 percent in last year’s budget. During the debate, Healy-Rae took offence at Donohoe’s suggestion that the Kerry Deputy chose not to go into Government in 2016. Healy-Rae was outraged by the remark and repeatedly told Donohoe: “You told a lie, you told a lie”. The subsequent outburst was broadcast live and has been shared multiple times on social media platforms.
“What people are missing is the reason I had the floor in the first place,” Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). “I was holding the Government to account. They said they would monitor the situation when they introduced the increase in VAT last year, but from what I am hearing from the people and businesses of Killarney and Kerry, is that the charge is having a negative effect on their businesses. I was holding the Minister to account and in the middle of, for reasons best known to himself, he told a lie about me and this would have gone on the Dáil record unless I challenged him and put the record straight. I was in the middle of a terrible important debate. If the Minister told lies about me to avoid the question in hand, only he can answer that.”

Mr Griffin collapsed on Fonte de Telha beach in Almada, near Lisbon, on Wednesday, June 12. He worked at the Intel HQ in Leixlip, Co Kildare, but was originally from Muckross in Killarney. It’s believed that Mr Griffin left the water on foot after feeling ill before fainting on the beach. Emergency services were called shortly after 4pm, but despite the efforts of local Maritime Police and medical crews, Mr Griffin died shortly after. “On behalf of the people of Killarney and in particular the people of the Muckross area, I express my deepest sympathy,” Killarney Mayor, Michael Gleeson, said. “It is particularly sad as his mother only recently passed away.” Mr Griffin is reposing at O’Shea’s Funeral Home, Cathedral Place until 6.30pm to-
Tom Griffin day. Requiem Mass will take place at St Mary’s Cathedral tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10.30am, followed by burial in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery. He was predeceased by his mother Kathleen. He is survived by his wife Michelle (Buckley), daughters Laura and Louise, son David, and father Michael.
Killarney’s Jessie Buckley in high demand state side
Jessie Buckley Rising Killarney actor and singer Jessie Buckley is all over the news in America this week following the release of her latest movie, ‘Wild Rose’, in cinemas across the Atlantic. Buckley plays a Glasgow singer who dreams of becoming a Nashville star in the new movie. She is currently in America promoting the new film, appeared on the CBS ‘Late Show' with Stephen Colbert, performing a version of ‘Glasgow’, one of hit the tunes from the film. Collider.com, one of America’s most
influential movie and television news websites named her as ‘Up and Comer of the Month’. Collider journalist Jeff Sneider has the full inside line on Buckley’s future. “I don’t mean to oversell Buckley, but the sky’s the limit for her career, which accordingly, has taken off,” he wrote. “Days before CinemaCon, Buckley had signed on to star in Charlie Kaufman‘s Netflix thriller ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’, thus replacing Oscar winner Brie Larson. Initially, the recasting seemed like a blow for the project, but after seeing ‘Wild Rose’ and Buckley’s limitless talent with my own eyes, I realized it was actually a boon.” In addition to Kaufman’s next movie, Buckley will soon be seen as a key PA in Renee Zellweger‘s Judy Garland movie ‘Judy’. She also plays Benedict Cumberbatch‘s first wife in the spy movie ‘Ironbark’, and co-stars alongside Keira Knightley and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in 'Misbehaviour', about the Miss World pageant’s first black competitor. Elsewhere, Buckley has wrapped a live-action role opposite Robert Downey Jr. in Universal’s big-budget family film ‘The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle’. Her most recent role was the HBO hit ‘Chernobyl’ about the Russian nuclear disaster in the town of the same name.

Concerns raised over Mission Road apartments THE
Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Elements of Majella's story throw up red flags There are a few elements to the Majella Moynihan story - the garda persecuted for being pregnant out of wedlock in the mid-80s - that throw up red flags. The documentary on Saturday was harrowing. She had her child in Galway after being sent to a kind family there, but the cruel and harsh way she was treated in Galway Regional Hospital, where she gave birth as an unmarried mother in 1984, is not a million miles away from the attitude revealed towards Savita Halappanavar in October 2012. There is the late Bishop Kevin McNamara, recently made Archbishop of Dublin and a leading light in the 1983 amendment to the constitution, and straight from Kerry. He cynically saved the young Majella from being fired for his own ends - in case even more young Irish women might be encouraged to have abortions in England! And indeed the greatest skeleton in the cupboard is right there in the 1983 Eight Amendment to the Constitution. The effect of that horrendous amendment still has not been properly addressed. Most regressive and divisive, the long run-up to that amendment that succeeded in equating a fertilised egg with a mature young woman was probably one of the most backward thinking and malicious moves in this
country or in any western democracy, post-World War 2. While it was not racist or rooting out heresy, it was singularly targeted at women, was deeply misogynist and unleashed something awful against women. It was ignorant; it was viciously and unashamedly anti-woman; and it appealed to sentiment and emotion as a disguise for its true motive: the suppression of women. It had very little to do with unborn babies. I can think of nothing better to equate it with except perhaps the rise to power of the Taliban in Afghanistan, or of the Islamic State which stripped women of all rights and destroyed an ancient culture or the Spanish Inquisition. The circumstances surrounding the 1983 referendum have never been properly analysed. This was not about babies, this was about women, and putting them back in their place. It fed on double standards and self-congratulation – that while abortion was OK in the UK, and it was OK to continue to send daughters over there, it would never be good enough for the sanctimonious people
Concerns raised over Mission Road apartments The Killarney Environs Protection Group have twice raised concerns with Kerry County Council planners over the breach of the wall at the Fassbender apartments on Mission Road, it has emerged. In March, they wrote to the Council to say that planning restrictions were not being adhered to. They also said that it took years to plan Mission Road which essentially went through the National Park and a precedent was being set for other
developments. And the conservation group questioned the cutting down of mature trees at the location. They received acknowledgement for their correspondence sent in March, but so far have had no other response. A Council spokesman has told me the matter is still being looked into. Separately, the planning files reveal strong concern was raised over the high building now underway at the back of the funeral home, this time by
on the soil of Holy Ireland. And young women needed to be reined in and reminded of their vulnerability! The result of this appalling primitive urge unleashed in 1983 is what happened to Majella Moynihan, Joanne Hayes and countless others. At one point the young Garda felt she was going to be stoned, she told Sean O’Rourke on RTÉ Radio 1. There is also the fact she came from a vulnerable background….Ah well! The kind of inquisition and questioning she endured mirrored the Kerry Babies investigation and tribunal, which also came straight out of the 1983 referendum. Two other things that are missed: the good guards. Her Superintendent and her colleagues seem to have been good skins - despite the pressure from higher up. And the great journalism under editor Douglas Gageby of the Irish Times, which gave women a voice in those awful times. The Irish Times journalist Michael O’Regan from Kerry did not mince his words on the matter on Twitter this week. “A dark and sinister Ireland was carved out post-independence.” The monumental errors like the 1983 amendment may finally begin to be torn down – but the impetus behind them must yet be faced up to, methinks. An Taisce. The building was on a sensitive location and the adjoining funeral home would be overlooked from the balconies which could impact on the privacy of those attending a funeral, An Taisce felt in the original application in 2014. Residents of Lower New Street expressed concerns about being overlooked. It was not appealed. But as many as 20 conditions are attached in 2014 including the set back of one of the balconies. A further application was made subsequently and at least part of the building underway now will be four storeys. By the way, the Council has charged large levies in respect of parking.
Political turmoil in Kerry? Speculation is rife in Kerry about just who will be in the field in the next General Election. The withdrawal of Toireasa Ferris has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons, and not just in Sinn Fein. Not to mix my metaphors, it all “dovetails” nicely with the onset of that most fertile of speculation seasons: the silly season. John Brassil is rubbing his hands in glee with Toireasa’s exit, as are a few more. Now, the prospect of a third Healy-Rae no longer seems so outlandish. Fianna Fail do not have a strong second candidate, and in fact, with respect to Brassil, they do not have even a first strong candidate. In Fine Gael, Griffin is vulnerable. If you listened to talk about FG, you would hear one or two interesting names – I have heard speculation about Mary Sheahan, wife of Tom, the former TD, and a solid person who has lost no interest in politics and was at the count in Killarney for long hours with pencil and paper watching the vote transfers. A second name is also intriguing. Before he became such a leading light in the fourth estate, Aidan O’Connor, reporter with Kerry’s Eye came within a whisper of a seat for Fine Gael on his first outing as a very young man. He was briefly afterwards a senator. There is a history of affinity between journalists and Fine Gael. For some reason there has long been traffic in and out. Perhaps it has to do with an urge towards law and order and the reforming zeal? Fine Gael in Kerry need a high profile figure. And unlike George Lee, who couldn’t stick the pace and ran back to the comfort of the studio in Montrose, Aidan, who has also worked as a reporter in the Dáil, would have no illusions about what was involved. I have heard his name in circles in Fine Gael, and the possibility he will be approached cannot be ruled out. He is not commenting.

READY FOR ROAD: Everyone who took part in the Gaelscoil Faithleann family fun walk in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation at Ross Castle Sunday morning. Pic: Dylan Clifford.
Pupils put their best foot forward for children’s charity A large group of parents and children from Gaelscoil Faithleann Killarney, stepped it out on Sunday for a family fun walk in Killarney National Park. Starting at Ross Castle, the happy crew did a circular route via the river walk, with the aim of socialising with fellow parents and also raising funds for a charity chosen by the children of 4th class, the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. “The day was great fun and a chance for families to meet beyond the school gate
and chat and get to know each other better,” Chairperson of the Gaelscoil’s Parents Council, Mary Carroll, said. “There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere, with a great turnout of people.” The walk is an annual event and has become a charity fundraiser in recent times
with the children in Rang 4 in the school forming a committee and planning the walk in conjunction with the Parents Council. “The teacher in Rang 4, Múinteoir Karen, was a wonderful support and got completely behind the idea, allowing the children time and support to develop their ideas,” Mary said. “They chose the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation as their charity, and all the class were involved in different ways. There were many vol-
unteer helpers on the day – it was really pupil power in action to help others.” In the build up to the walk the pupils spread the word on the work of the Jack & Jill Foundation, and linked up with the foundation’s head office in Kildare. “The children’s work was more than successful – we had a lovely fun afternoon, people met and chatted, the pupils were involved in organising the event and the walk raised over €550 for the charity through donations on the day, which will be passed on directly to the Jack & Jill Foundation on the school’s behalf,” Mary said. “This is a wonderful result, when you think that every €16 equals one hour of home nursing care for one Jack & Jill child.”
New playground opened in Ballyfinane | By Michelle Crean There’s great excitement in one local community with the official opening of their brand new playground.
PLAY TIME: Ballyfinane locals are delighted with their brand new community playground which was officially opened on Friday.
Ballyfinane National School in partnership with Ballyfinane Hall Committee received CLÁR Funding for a community playground. The initiative is a partnership with the local school, the hall committee and Kerry County Council, who joined together to secure a suitable site. Funding for the playground was provided through the CLÁR initiative and from the local Tour de Ballyfinane which is organised by Ballyfinane NS Parents Association annually. All the young boys and girls in Ballyfinane NS and the local community are overjoyed to have a playground on their doorstep and have given it the big thumbs ups. Brendan Griffin TD officially cut the ribbon at 1pm on Friday, and those in attendance were entertained by tradition-
al music and Irish dancing by the pupils of Ballyfinane NS. Principal Catherine O’Shea said she is delighted with this new addition to the locality as it provides a great social outlet for families and gives the boys and girls a safe and fun place to play during breaks. “I know that this new playground has involved a tremendous amount of work and commitment – where enormous praise and gratitude must be given to the many people who have played a part in making this wonderful dream and facility come through for the children and community of Ballyfinane.” Marie Edwards, Ballyfinane Parents Association, added that the playground is a great asset to their small rural community. “It’s lovely for the children and people of Ballyfinane to have a focal point to meet. This would not have been achieved only for the fantastic community spirit and the hard work of the school, Board of Management, Parent’s Association, Kerry County Council and Ballyfinane Hall Committee.”

We had a total of 52 games and Lissivigeen won
well, although it was a passionate final.” He added that Niall McGillicuddy’s parents, Daithi and Sheila, and his sister Ellen were also in attendance on the day, although it was an emotional occasion for them. “All school’s showed dignity and respect for the minute’s silence. Ponyman “desperately” tried to control his horse – Killarney inquest hears | By Anne Lucey The inquests into the deaths of two American tourists killed in the Gap of Dunloe last year heard how the spot where they died was treacherous and that a barrier should be put in place.

Killarney show debut for rare German tractor A rare 1955 Hanomag tractor will go on display at the Killarney Valley Vintage and Classic Club’s annual show at Killarney Racecourse next month. | By Sean Moriarty The German manufactured tractor is powered by an unusual two-stroke diesel engine, fitted with off-set steering to allow driver view ploughed furrows from overhead, and an internal mid-mounted mowing bar for cutting hay and grass – all features that put the tractor well ahead of its time 65 years ago. Owned by local man Brendan Griffin, the tractor has never before been seen on public display in Ireland. Mr Griffin, a life-long fan of farm machinery and implements enthusiast, bought the tractor in Germany around 11 years ago. “I was at a rally in Germany a few years ago, I saw the tractor for sale, I liked it so much I just bought it,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Germany is a collector’s dream. Between 1945 and 1970 there were 94 different manufacturers. In recent years the German Government has stopped the export of vintage tractors as
they say it is part of their heritage, so I am very lucky to own such a machine.” The Hanomag manufacturing firm first came to prominence before World War One when it started manufacturing steam engines. In 1912, Hanomag started producing ploughs before adding passenger cars, tractors, crawler tractors and trucks to its series in 1924. In 1971, the firm concentrated on construction equipment. But before that more than 250,000 machines left the factory halls in Hanover. The brand is owned by Komatsu since 1989, Massey Ferguson owned it for a spell in the 1970s and Daimler-Benz bought out its truck division around the same time. Local fans will get the chance to see the rare 1955 Hanomag at the annual vintage show on July 22. Brendan will offer visiting fans a chance to learn about the tractor as he will give an in-depth talk on the machine at the show at 3pm.

Rosalyn Joy Few (64) of Phoenix, Arizona, and her partner Normand Larose (62) originally from Canada, both died at the Gap of Dunloe on April 9, 2018 of blunt force trauma with severe traumatic brain injury due to a fall on rocks from a pony and trap, post mortems had found. No external factor such as a passing car was involved when the horse and trap suddenly left the road, and nothing spooked the horse. The horse had worked as a jarvey horse in Killarney, it knew it was slipping and it tried to resist falling over the edge, the inquest in Killarney on Wednesday heard. Ponyman Dan Casey had “desperately” tried to control his horse and had jumped from the rear door of the trap as horse and trap left the road shortly after the iron bridge. The Gap of Dunloe traditional traps were very different to the Killarney four wheel jaunting cars in that they had no braking system, an expert garda witness said. From his examination of the road markings, the horse’s left front shoe lost traction and the weight of the tub and the passengers pushed him over the edge. Speed was not a factor. Both trap and horse were in good condition and the horse had been shod in recent weeks. Garda O’Brien said he felt there should be a barrier and also brakes on traps. The six-man jury returned a verdict of accidental death after almost three hours of
evidence. They also recommended that barriers be erected. Dan Casey (53) of Dunloe Upper, Beaufort, told the inquest he was a ponyman for 37 years; he was on his fourth day back to work for the 2018 season. He picked up Ms Few and Mr Normand at 12.30pm at Brandon’s Cottage. “Suddenly without warning my horse Johnny bolted,” Mr Casey said. He tried to bring him back into control and he himself fell backwards. The entire accident took 30 seconds, he said. The horse had been working in Killarney as a jarvey horse before he bought him, and from June 2017 to October Mr Casey used the horse in the Gap, he said. Johnny the horse had “a very quiet demeanour” and he had had no problems with him, "absolutely no problems", Mr Casey said. “I have never previously had an accident on the Gap,” Mr Casey said. The horse was “at walking pace” at the time. Ms Quilter thanked the many witnesses who gave evidence. Superintendent Flor Murphy thanked the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team for their recovery of the bodies. Supt. Murphy on behalf of the Gardai, and foreman Paudie Nagle on behalf of the jury, also extended their condolences. Solicitor for the families of the deceased, Adrian Hegarty, said they wished to thank the people of Killarney, their hotel and their bus driver and other services. Solicitor for ponyman Dan Casey, Dan O’Connor, extended “the deepest and most heartfelt sympathy”. There was not a day Mr Casey did not pray for the deceased, he said.

Fr Tom Looney celebrates 50 years in the priesthood For 50 years he has dedicated his life to the church and its people – and on Saturday night it was the turn of the parish to celebrate Fr Tom Looney’s commitment. A ceremony to mark his Golden Jubilee took place in Christ, Prince of Peace Church, Fossa, followed by a night of celebration in the local community centre. The Eucharist ceremony was organised by Fr Tom, while the Parish Pastoral Council along with help from other church groups co-ordinated the rest of the event. The Mass was concelebrated by Fr Tom, his brother Fr Donal, Bishop Ray Browne, eight priests, one deacon
and a team of altar servers and was enriched by the choir, vocalists and organists. “A special thanks to Catherine McCarthy for providing and preparing the food, Fossa School Parent’s Council helped to serve the food on the night and also decorated the hall for the occasion which was adorned with art work produced by each class from the local school,” Paudy O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser.
Fr Tom’s family presented the gifts which included his love of history and sport, Paudy added. “Fr Tom referred to his 50 years in ministry since 1969 and he produced the first hat he wore when he started his Seminary training in Maynooth in 1962 to the applause of the packed congregation in the church. This hat had been purchased in Cleary’s and gifted to him by family. He catalogued his life from his ordination in St Brendan’s College in 1969 by Bishop Moynihan through his parish ministry from Kerry to London and Peru and then back to Kerry, and finally to Fossa in 2015.”
The Chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council, Billy Mangan welcomed Fr Tom’s family to the celebration in the community centre and commended him on his 50 years dedication to the priesthood. He was then presented with a gift of a landscape painting by Olivia Ní Carra from the people of Fossa Parish and afterwards Fr Tom cut a beautifully decorated Golden Jubilee cake, baked by Margaret Myers. The Kelleher family provided the music and Fr Tom gave a beautiful rendition of ‘Óró, Sé do Bheatha Bhaile’, which was enjoyed by all. The entertainment continued with music and dancing to the “Sliabh Luachra” set. “A special word of thanks to the voluntary organisations in the parish who financially supported the purchase of a gift for Fr Tom. The community wish Fr Tom a full recovery and continued success with his upcoming treatment. Comhghairdeas le Fr Tom. Go bhfága Dia do shláinte dhuit.”

When French President Charles de Gaul visited Sneem 50 years ago members of An Garda Síochána were billeted at the Dromhall Hotel on the Muckross Road. One of the Gardai on duty was Sligo native and long-time Kerry resident Jerry McManus. And when his family wanted to host a surprise 80th birthday party for Jerry - the Dromhall Hotel seemed the perfect choice. It was organised by one of his son’s, Tony, who has recently moved to Killarney after years in Los Angeles. Over 130 people attended the surprise gathering including family members who jetted in from near and far to celebrate Jerry’s big day. His other son, Ger, based in LA, and his daughter Michelle Rippen lives in Delft, Holland also made it, as well as Jerry’s wife Marie, and several members of the Gardai that Jerry worked
alongside over the years. Another one of Jerry’s claims to fame is that he is a former trainer of the Kerry Hurling team and several hurling colleagues were at the Dromhall to celebrate too. “The family organised it as a surprise, but he did have an inkling that something was going down,” Ger said. “But he had no idea that there would be that many people there.” On a sad note, his sister Lilian passed away last October after suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. On the night of Jerry’s birthday, the McManus family asked guests to make a donation to Multiple Sclerosis Killarney in lieu of birthday gifts, and a massive €2,000 was raised.

She is marking her 12th year as the school’s secretary, but will also celebrate her 60th birthday early next month. And that was a good enough reason for the staff at her school to throw a good aul’ party in Reidy’s last Friday night. “It was
a fantastic night and thanks to colleagues Leona Twiss, Marie Murphy and Lorraine Counihan for organising it,” Agnes, who lives in Fossa, said. Friday night was just the start of the celebrations. Agnes and her twin sister Carmel Fitzgerald, the secretary at St Brendan’s College, will celebrate together at Lord Kenmare’s Restaurant, while on June 29 her family will hold another party at the Beaufort Bar.

Tidy Towns urge public to clean up Killarney’s streets

Tidy Towns judges are on their way and will inspect every aspect of the town – and this week the local volunteers are making a passionate plea for everyone to help clean-up. | By Michelle Crean Businesses, resident’s associations and the community are being asked to work together to rid the town of cigarette butts, which they say are a scourge on the streets, as well as litter and weeds. Last year the town received 334 points and a gold medal in the SuperValu Tidy Towns competition and locals are now hoping for a better result this year. However, in order to achieve this, they need the public’s help. Johnny McGuire, PRO with Killarney Tidy Towns says a lot of work is being done locally but more could be achieved such as cleaning up outside business premises, picking up cigarette butts and litter in the town. “We’re near judging season for Tidy Towns,” he told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We’re calling on all businesses to make certain the exterior of their premises is looking presentable for the next few
months by keeping it weed and litter free.” Every Monday and Wednesday volunteers are out in force cleaning up different areas of the town, he added. Their next meet-up takes place this Monday evening at 6.30pm at Corcorans Furniture to finish grass edges, to paint 'black and amber' on the roundabout and paint signage poles in the general area, and more volunteers are welcome. Johnny added that recently they’ve had great help from Marks and Spencer staff who volunteered to help the Tidy Towns effort by painting the bridge entrance to the playground in Deenagh. “Four Marks and Spenser staff spent two days working on that area painting the timber bridge and seats, as part of their Corporate Social Strategy. The power hosing was done by Frank Culloty from Kerry Drains. Lunch was provided by the Ross Hotel and Cronin’s Restaurant in College St.”

Fuchsia is prone to very few diseases A plant which thrives in this less than summery weather is a plant which was first introduced to Europe in the beginning of the 18th century. It was discovered by the monk, Charles Plumier, on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. He named the plant in honour of his friend and colleague, the German doctor and botanist, Leonhart Fuchs. Yes, you have guessed correctly, the Fuchsia is the topic this week. It’s instantly recognisable by its beautiful bells and synonymous with Kerry hedgerows. The variety we have in the hedgerows is Fuchsia magellanica, named after the explorer Magellan. It is native to South America, and is used to a temperate wet climate like ours. The first time Fuchsia is mentioned in any literary works is in 1703, by Charles Plumier, however there is evidence that plants were not cultivated in Europe until the late 1700s. As more exploration of the South American continent took place, more varieties of fuchsia were sent over, and more hybridising took place by plant enthusiasts. For example, William Lobb, the great plant explorer, sent to the Veitch nurseries several specimens from Peru in 1843. An absolute explosion of new varieties appeared on the market, and today the choice is immense, especially if you shop online! The fuchsia is prone to very few diseases, and the flowers are not affected by rain. Hardy garden varieties, such as ‘Army Nurse’, ‘Ricartoni’ or ‘Mrs Popple’ are hardy to minus four degrees, however the varieties we use for hanging baskets and as summer bedding need to be kept indoors and treated in much the same way you would a geranium. All fuchsias come into leaf quite late,
so do not despair if, in April, there is still no sign of life! Taking cuttings from fuchsias is a simple and cost effective way to increase your stock. They root best in April and May, but can be taken up until August. In my experience, cuttings taken in July are more prone to rotting, or botrytis, than those taken a little earlier or later. Take a ‘heel cutting’, that is, a small twig taken away from a main stem, leaving a ‘heel’ at the end. Trim it, and use a rooting powder to minimise rotting and maximise root formation. They should take about three weeks to root, but after this carefully check they are not rotting. Cuttings should be upright and a good colour. Pinch out the top two leaves, and if there are flower buds make sure to nip them out also, otherwise the energy will go up rather than down!. I have mentioned Fuchsia Thalia before, which is a slightly different type of fuchsia, in that its leaves grow in whorls of three, and the tube part of the flowers is longer than usual fuchsias. Thalia has dark red foliage and dark orange flowers, making it an ideal choice for a beautiful feature pot plant! All bedding fuchsias give great colour, and come in a plethora of shades ranging from white through pink to the deepest purples and burgundy. For those who like a tidy hanging basket they are an ideal choice, as they do not grow too long. They can be trained as standards, if you have a greenhouse to over wither them, as it takes a few years, and recently pyramids have become fashionable. An invaluable book for the enthusiast is the ‘Royal Horticultural Society Fuchsias’, and there are some excellent websites dedicated to fuchias, such as www.solentfuchsia.co.uk, where there is a vast amount of further reading for those who are interested!
MARCHING BAND: The University of Washington Varsity Alumni Marching Band from Seattle, Washington will lead the annual 4th of July Independence Day festival in Killarney this year.
4th of July celebrations planned for Killarney A marching band with over 100 members will lead the annual 4th of July Independence Day festival in Killarney this year. The festival, now in its sixth year is set to be a celebration of all things American. Organisers have secured The University of Washington Varsity Alumni Marching Band from Seattle, Washington. The celebrations will commence at 3pm with the raising of the American flag by the Mayor of Killarney, Michael Gleeson, and Chamber President Paul Sherry at Killarney Town Hall. The American and Irish Anthems, along with a selection of American/Irish themed songs, will be performed by The Glenflesk Male Choir and they will be accompanied by the Seattle-based band. Festivities include The Big Parade, an out-door cinema, choir singing, a street party, swing dancing, and lots more fun for both young and old, all located in the heart of Killarney. “There will be a host of fun filled activities for both young and old throughout the day and this year the festival, now in its sixth year, aims to bring the town to life in a fun and exciting way to celebrate all that is great about the US and to remember the years of legacy between the United States and Ireland,” Ollie Favier, Festival Committee Joint Chairman, said. The town will be transformed into a carnival atmosphere of fun and entertainment. The highlight of the day will be The Big Parade, which will commence at 7pm from the Outlet Centre car park, and this will bring the streets of Killarney to life with shows by the Wild Wild West Troupe, brass bands, cheerleaders and Disney characters.
After the parade there will be a street party featuring music, and afterwards there will be a screening of ‘Grease’ on an outdoor screen in the grounds of Killarney House. And of course no 4th of July celebration would be complete without a spectacular fireworks display which will round off the evening at 11.15pm and light up the night sky over Killarney.

€19k donated to St Francis Special School | By Michelle Crean Storm Hanna had little effect on one local fundraiser in April – as €19k was raised for a local charity! The Autism Golf Classic, held at Beaufort Golf Club on April 26, raised the staggering amount with the cheque handed over to SFSS Autism Parent Support Group in St Francis Special School. “This year’s golf classic was phenomenal, raising little over €19,000. Even Storm Hannah didn't take effect,” Brigitta Looney, one of the organisers said. “Over 44 teams went out on the day. We are ever so grateful to all our golfers. Only for them we wouldn't have a classic. Thanks to all our sponsors we had 39 greens, 31 tees, over 31 fabulous prizes for our live raffle that took place that evening. First prize in the golf classic went to Beaufort Golf Club, second John Cogan,
Cork, and third Donie Broderick, Kilcummin. The top prize in the live raffle for two nights in the Parknasilla Resort and Spa went to John Donovan, Tureencahill, Gneeveguilla. “All funds raised go to SFSS Autism Parent Support group, to help children in St Francis Special School gain private therapies such as speech and language therapy, music therapy resources etc. Each year we’re able to add children to our group, it's great to see our group growing each year and watch the children thrive. Us parents and our children from SFSS Autism Parent Support Group would like to give huge thanks to all our sponsors and businesses that supported us, and have continually supported us annually. To our ticket sellers and those who supported the raffle, thank you. Without your continuous help and support this would not happen so thank you all kindly.”

Death of “Dog Ranger” There was sadness this week at the news of the death of Oscar the “Dog Ranger” who has been an important part of the Killarney National Park team for the past 15 years. Oscar, who was deaf, died on Wednesday last (June 12), after he was hit by a car. Oscar was always on duty with his beloved Peter O'Toole and every day was an adventure, Margaret O'Regan Killarney National Park, explained. “He loved bluebells and wild garlic in spring, boating trips on hot summer days with the wind in his face as he stood proudly on the bow of the boat on the Lakes of Killarney .... in Autumn it was the season for the 'Rut' and he could be heard
barking back at the largest of stags,” she said. “In the snowy winter he loved nothing better than hitting the high places to play in the white wonderland of the hills. Oscar did not care much for the rain in Killarney and would pretend to be asleep in the passenger seat many a time to avoid getting out. Peter and Oscar were the perfect team and the most photographed dog in our beautiful park. Peter O’Toole paid tribute to his beloved Oscar online this week. “He was accidentally killed this evening and the only consolation is that he did not suffer. He will always be fondly remembered by me and the rest of my family.”
Artist and mother of two, Julija Saler (38), will hold an art exhibition on Friday, June 28, from 8-11pm. Julija, who has lived in Killarney for the last few years, wanted to organise a fundraiser before she and her family depart for their native Austria next month. “I’ve done over 200 pieces and will have 30 at the exhibition,” Julija told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have been living for three and a half years in Killarney but are leaving soon as my husband works in Liebherr. My chil-
dren are in Fossa school and we will miss it.” She said she chose the Jack and Jill Foundation as her charity of choice, as a child in her son’s class is a wheelchair user and his family have used the service. And 20 percent of each painting sold will go to the charity. “There’s a lot of kids in Fossa with special needs and it’s also very important to support the parents.” Tickets into the exhibition are €25 and on the night there’ll be free entry into the prize draw for an original abstract piece of art.

Credit union car loan is better than PCP Close to four in 10 consumers in Ireland will buy a new car in 2019. Over half plan to spend more than €10,000 on their new set of wheels, according to the most recent Carzone Motoring Report (2018).
CYCLE LAUNCH: The Reen and O’Leary families launched the seventh Sliabh Luachra Sportive in memory of Willie Reen and Paud O’Leary, along with club members.
Cycle club to host final pre-Ring of Kerry event | By Sean Moriarty Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club’s seventh annual Tour of Sliabh Luachra Sportive will remember two of the club’s most popular members. Set for Sunday, June 30 participants can chose from three routes, 105k, 75k or a 20k family route, which covers the east side of Sliabh Luachra, in memory of club members Willie Reen and Paud O’Leary. The event, which was previously known as the Tour of Sliabh Luachra, is traditionally seen as the perfect one for those in final preparations for the Ring of Kerry Cycle, which is scheduled for the following Saturday. Paud O'Leary (42) was out training for the Ring of Kerry Cycle for the Down Syndrome Association when he was struck
and fatally injured at Scrahan Fada, Gneeveguilla on July 1, 2012. Willie Reen was a member of the wellknown garage family in Rathmore whose family business Reen’s of Rathmore are long-time sponsors of the club’s sporting and competitive cycling teams. He died in June 2012 following an illness. Sunday’s event will raise funds for the juvenile division of the club. “This club was set-up in memory of Paud and my son Willie,” John Reen, Club President and sponsor, said. “We are trying to promote the junior side of things and bring on that side of it and funds will go towards their races and competitions. “We have three fantastic routes on offer suitable for all abilities, and this year is our first year having a 20k family route,” added Club PRO Denise Wall. “It is a great day out on the bike.”
READY FOR ROAD: Launching the seventh Sliabh Luachra Sportive in memory of Willie Reen and Paud O’leary were club members Donnacha O’Connor, Michelle Finn and Aidan O’ Mahony.
The study also found that one in four consumers who spent between €10,000 and €20,000 on their previous car, used a credit union car loan to fund the purchase.* Credit union loans have always been popular amongst car buyers for their straightforward terms and conditions and flexibility, and look set to be a top choice again in 2019. Indeed, credit unions, such as Killarney Credit Union, are reporting an increase in car loan queries from their members. Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer of Killarney Credit Union explains why she feels there has been a renewed interest in the traditional car loan. “A credit union loan is transparent and carries no hidden fees or charges. The buyer owns the car outright once they buy it, while with other more complex finance options, such as a PCP agreement, the buyer has effectively hired the car for a period of time while they make payments. At the end of the PCP agreement, they will have to make a balloon payment in order to actually own the car, which can prove to be quite the financial sting in the tail if it hasn’t been budgeted for.” The Carzone report however also found that 72 percent of people who had spent more than €20,000 on their last car had used a finance options such as a PCP agreement. So while PCPs can be complicated, have a raft of additional charges and a good deal of inflexibility, they are proving popular with car-buyers in the over €20,000 market. Could this be down to the fact that a lot of consumers don’t fully understand what they are signing up to with a PCP? “For many people, headline rates on PCP agreements can at first look more attractive, but these can easily distract from the fact that essentially PCPs are lease schemes and the buyer will need to be conscious of the mileage
they are racking up, because the balloon payment, or guaranteed minimum future value (GMFV), of the car will have been calculated with their annual mileage in mind,” Helen explains. “In contrast, with a car loan from the credit union, the buyer simply borrows the money to pay for a car, which they own immediately, and which they can drive as much as they please. They can also sell the car on at any time they wish, should they need to, whereas they do not have this option with a PCP. Credit unions are ethical lenders. We will work with our members to structure repayments that suit their individual circumstances. At Killarney Credit Union our car loan is available at an affordable APR rate of 7.8 percent**, and is typically approved within 48 hours. We also offer car insurance to make the whole process as convenient as possible for our members. I would really encourage anyone thinking about going the PCP route to have a chat with us first at Killarney Credit Union before making the final decision. We are happy to see all our members, no matter how long it has been since they did business with the credit union, and of course we are always happy to chat to anyone who has never been a credit union member.” Helen also says potential buyers should familiarise themselves with the below checklist before signing the dotted line on a PCP agreement: Be aware that to extend the term of a PCP you may be charged a rescheduling fee. Take note of the cap on the number of miles/kilometres you are allowed to clock up over the period of the contract. You may be requested to commit to certain car servicing agreements. Ensure you always enquire about additional fees and charges, you are entitled to a list of all additional charges so ask the garage for this before you sign any agreement. *Carzone Motoring Report 2018

There will be further localised road closures in Youghal with a stop and go system on Saturday and Monday to facilitate the organisers. The N25, the main Cork to Waterford Road, will remain open at all times. Parking in Youghal is available at Youghal Rugby Club at a cost of €5. A shuttle bus service will run from there. Parking in Midleton and other routes along the cy-

Signs have been posted all along the race route and there will be a towing operation in place for any vehicle which is parked on the route. "This is the first ever official Ironman to take place in Ireland and we are delighted to have the event in Cork. To facilitate the Ironman, there will be road closures throughout East Cork. If you are living in the area, please go to the Garda website to see the full traffic management plan. There are a number of crossing points on the route so most residents will be able to come and go, but there will be delays,” Superintendent Adrian Gamble of Midleton Garda Station said. Trump kicks off his 2020 re-election bid Residents of the United States of America will go the polls 500 days from today (Friday) to decide if they want a second term of Donald Trump or not. Tuesday, November 3, 2020 is DDay. Last Tuesday night, Trump kicked off his 2020 re-election bid with a “Keep America Great” rally in Or-
lando, Florida. He used the opportunity to again attack immigrants, his 2016 opponent Hillary Clinton, CNN and Democratic lawmakers, accusing them of “flooding the country with illegal immigrants”. But the bizarre thing is that he is most-likely to regain office. Trump may be historically unpopular, but he is popular enough to be
Taking to Facebook, they said: “An elderly man out walking his dog last night near Portarlington fell into the ditch and couldn’t get out. “Jack the Dog stayed by his side and showed Gardaí where he was. Even when ambulance arrived Jack wouldn’t rest unless he could see him.” Jack’s owner Pat Brennan was out enjoying a late evening stroll last Monday when he stopped to enjoy the full moon. Pat, who is partially paralysed, stumbled and fell into a deep drain. He was unable to climb out but was able to place a 999 call. However, the emergency services were unable to find him, owing to the rural nature of the area, but a Garda recognised Jack sitting at the edge of the drain where Pat fell and that is how he was found. He was treated on site by local ambulance staff and only suffered minor cuts and bruises. The Gardai posted a photo of a very concerned looking Jack waiting outside the ambulance while Pat was being treated.

Notwithstanding any formidable opponents, the rival Democrats have yet to select their horse for the race, there are many reasons why Trump will be back for another four years. The current state of the US economy is very healthy and unemployment is at an all-time low. That is surely worth a few votes. The Wall. Yes, the wall he wants to build to keep the Mexicans out has not happened - but that has not prevented Trump from keeping it high on the political agenda. It would be the first time since 2008 that the Rangers have been deployed overseas when they were in Chad. The United Nations say this is the most dangerous mission in the world, since 2013 it has suffered 125 fatal casualties, including 18 so far this year.

Killarney man comes up Roses
Killarney man Ciarán O’Donnell is one of 32 young men who made the final 32 Escorts chosen to tend to the needs of Roses at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival, from August 23-27. 40 men took park in the popular, yet testing, Boot Camp along the Wild Atlantic Way in Kerry last weekend, after which the final 32 were shortlisted. The Agahdoe man was inspired to enter the competition after watching last year’s Rose of Tralee on television and being coxed into it by family and friends. “Like everyone, I grew up watching it on television and my friends and family always said I would be good at it,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I was watching last year’s final and applied there and then as it’s the 60th anniversary and it was something I just wanted to be involved in.” The Escorts, who already came through an interview process in April, had to pass
several endurance tests and team-building exercises before they could graduate as fully-fledged Rose Escorts. “It was an action packed weekend. The highlight for me was climbing Carrauntoohil, despite being a Killarney man and being active, I was glad of the support of the lads for that task,” he added. “At the start of the weekend, I would have been anxious to meet so many new people but I am so glad I did. Thanks so much to my employer and sponsor Zenith Technologies Limited, Cork Company of the Year 2019, for all their help and support so far.” Two other Kerry men Jamie Flannery from Dingle and Chris Kelly from Tralee also made the final cut.
Gender neutral uniforms for Wicklow primary school A County Wicklow school is going to introduce a gender-neutral school uniform. St Brigid's National School in Greystones says it will implement the new policy from September. The move means boys would be allowed to wear skirts and girls to wear trousers
and is the result of the school's student council. The school is also set to introduce gender neutral toilets. "Between the pupils and their parents they will decide what type of uniform from the range available in the school,” Tom Sherlock, the Chair of the school's Board of Management, said.
Drivers licenses for all in New York Thousands of undocumented Irish become eligible for driving licences in New York after the New York State Senate passed a controversial bill on Monday. The bill restores the right to obtain a licence, regardless of immigration status and reverses a law that was passed nearly 20 years ago. “By passing this needed legislation, we are growing our economy while at the same time making our roads safer. This is the right step forward for New York State as we continue to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform on the federal level,” said Senator Luis Sepúlveda. The move is likely to spark arguments with pro and anti-immigration supporters. New York is the first state allow
this, but it will fly in the face of those who believe it will add to the country’s immigration problems. But for now thousands of illegal Irish can now apply for licences, a move that many others will see as the first step in legalising their American status.

Reach a deep level of peace and calm
With the summer holidays around the corner and the weather not so good, I highly recommend kicking it off with a massage to bring the body into relax mode at the start of the holidays. Don’t waste the first few weeks trying to relax, try having either a full body Swedish deep tissue back massage, Indian head massage, hot stone massage or reflexology to induce deep relaxation. Massage is not only good for the deep relaxation of the muscle joints but also the mind. When we completely chill out both body and mind get time to switch off and fully relax. After a massage you will experience a completely different sleep that night, a deep sleep on another level, and when you wake you will actually feel rested as the massage has allowed the body really reach a deep
level of peace and calm. Why not try ear candling as an add on to the Indian head massage? It’s fantastic for sinuses, headaches, deafness, sore throats, purifying blood, improving vertigo, improving lymph drainage and preventing migraines. Ear candles are hollow cones made of fabric covered in paraffin wax, beeswax, or soy wax. The warmth created by the flame causes suction which pulls earwax and other impurities out of the ear. Try it to believe it. Call Jill for more info or book an appointment 064 6632966.

deadline looming
The CAO Change of Mind facility closes at 5.15pm on Monday, July 1, giving applicants the opportunity to review their current choices, and make changes if necessary. There is no charge for this facility. Up to the deadline applicants can add, remove, or re-order course choices. Applicants can add any course to their list even if they did not include it in the application they submitted in February. The only exception to this are restricted entry courses which are clearly marked in the CAO handbook. Applicants should also take this opportunity to revisit their Level 8 and Level 7/6 lists, and examine carefully both the courses they have applied for and the order in which they have been placed. CAO choices should be based on order of preference only and not on how students think they may have performed during the exams or indeed what they expect the cut-off points to be for the course they have chosen. That will not be known until August 15 - the expected date for first round CAO offers to be issued. The golden rule is that courses must always be listed in order of preference. In order to make changes to their course listing, applicants should log into their account on www.cao.ie using the 'my application' prompt. Here they will be asked for their CAO number, date of birth and password. Applicants can then enter their separate lists: Level 8 and Level 7/6. A short video guide on the change of mind process is available on www.cao.ie. Exceptional Late Applications & Change of Mind – The exceptional date of July 22 at 5.15pm applies only to applicants who are registered as an undergraduate student on May 1, 2019 in any year of any one of the participating Higher Educa-
tion Institutions, subject to some exclusions. For further details see www.cao. ie and students must contact the Admissions Office of the HEI at which they are currently registered, informing them that they want to apply to CAO and ask to be supplied with an Exceptional Late Application Pack. Alternatives to CAO - As well as reconsidering CAO courses, students still have plenty of time to consider alternative options such as Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Post Leaving Certificate Courses. Information on such options in Kerry can be found on https://www.kerryetb.ie/ and nationally on www.apprenticeship.ie, www.qualifax.ie or www.careersportal.ie Niamh Dwyer, is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and PRO of Kerry Branch of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors careerfocusnow@gmail.com

Dance diva, Oti Mabuse, who is fronting Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2019 competition, is encouraging glasses wearers across Killarney to submit their entries. But the deadline is next Sunday, June 30. “We want all our glasses customers in Killarney to show the country how great they look in their specs,” Thomas Doyle, Store Director at Specsavers in Killarney said. “We know we’ve got some great contenders who
could be in for the running to win the cash prize.” Those aged 16 and over just need to share a selfie and tell Specsavers what their glasses mean to them to be in with chance of winning. Seven finalists, plus a social media favourite voted for by the public, will attend a celebrity-packed awards ceremony in London, with one overall winner scooping the top award and cash prize. For every entry accepted, Specsavers will donate €1 to the National Council for the Blind of Ireland. Money raised from the competition has helped the NCBI’s rehabilitation training, counselling services and technology provisions.

New SEAT dealership in Ahern's Castleisland Quest Adventure Series, welcomed Volvo as their official event vehicle partner across events for 2019. Patricia Greene (Volvo Car Ireland), Cillian Stewart (Cherry Cool Promotions) and Oliver Kirwan (Elite Event Management and Quest Adventure Series)
Quest teams up with Volvo as official vehicle partner The local company behind events like the Quest Killarney Adventure Race, the Ring of Beara Cycle, Ride Dingle and Run Killarney 10k and half-marathon, has joined forces with Volvo Ireland for the remainder of the season. Over the next six months, Volvo will sponsor two event vehicles for the Quest Adventure Series, managed by Elite Event Management, which is based in Rockfield, Killarney. Adventure racing has become a very popular pass-time in Ireland in recent years with more than 10,000 participants taking part in Quest events across the year. The new partnership is founded on core values shared between Volvo and Quest, including respect and care for the environment, sustainability and a sense of adventure. Both also share a focus on people, helping them to enjoy active life-
styles and explore new opportunities. “We are really pleased Volvo have come on board as official vehicle partner for Quest. It’s a brand that has great synergies with Quest and we know that adventure racers value high quality experiences in the outdoors,” said Oliver Kirwan, Quest Founder and Race Director. “To be able to get out into the countryside or coastline with your gear and taking on an escape or an adventure weekend is what it’s all about. I’d like to welcome Volvo to Quest Adventure Series, we look forward to a really positive and productive partnership.” Volvo will be present at Run Killarney which takes place on July 20, and at Quest Killarney on October 12. • The Volvo Kerry Test Drive Event takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at the Brehon Hotel where members of the public can test drive cars that make up the Volvo range.

“Ahern's Castleisland will look to grow the SEAT brand in Kerry and beyond. With their modern showrooms in Castleisland they are ideally located in the heart of Kerry. Aherns SEAT will add the brand to their existing brands including BMW, Opel and Mazda, offering the Kerry motorist the biggest selection of new and used cars in Kerry.” The SEAT car company was founded in Spain almost 70 years ago, and has been owned by the Volkswagen Group for nealry 30 years. SEAT recently launched the Tarraco seven-seater, which is the 14th model to be named after a Spanish place. SEAT test drives can be arranged by calling Aherns on 066 7143000.

FREE CAR: Subaru Ireland is offering a free Impreza to one lucky GAA club in the country as part of its sponsorship of GAA coverage on TG4
Kerry GAA clubs could win a new Subaru Impreza GAA cubs across the county are being offered a chance to win a brand new Subaru Impreza. The prize by Subaru Ireland and Spórt TG4 was launched at the annual Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta, Gaeltacht Football tournament earlier this month. The car will be awarded to the club which makes a one minute video about their activities, gets a combination of the most ‘likes’ online, and deemed by a panel of adjudicators as making the best case for its club to be awarded the prize. “It was launched in Kerry so it would be nice to see the prize come to Kerry,” said
Killarney Subaru dealer Dermot Healy. “The winning club can do what they like with the car, sell it or raffle it and make a lot of money for their club. There is a good chance it will go to a Gaeltach club, and we have lot of them in Kerry.” Clubs need to post the video to their official Facebook page, using the handle @ SpórtTG4, they must ‘like’ the Sport TG4 on Facebook and must use the the hashtag #SubaruAbú and then get as many likes as possible for the video. The winner will be announced live on TG4 during the broadcast of the All-Ireland Ladies Gaelic Football finals from Croke Park, in September.

Checklist for getting your house ready to sell Ultimately, there are several steps in the process of getting your house ready to sell. This checklist outlines the essential steps and considerations to prepare for selling your property. 1. DETERMINE WHETHER IT’S A GOOD TIME TO SELL Market conditions fluctuate regularly, and homes generally move faster in some areas during certain times of the year. Research market conditions and find a few local, comparable homes that have recently sold as a benchmark to get an idea of the market conditions. 2. F IND OUT IF IT’S FINANCIALLY FEASIBLE FOR YOU TO SELL YOUR HOME In less-than-ideal market conditions, you might find out that the market value of your home is less than the remaining balance on your mortgage.
3. MAKE UPDATES AND REPAIRS TO IMPROVE YOUR HOME’S VALUE Evaluate the main structures of your home and take care of any pressing problems, such as leaking pipes, cracked windows, or other concerns that could turn off potential buyers. 4. CLEAN AND DECLUTTER Rooms will look larger if there’s less stuff in them. You might consider renting a storage unit to temporarily store all but the most critical pieces of furniture and decor. But don’t go overboard; it’s better to leave some furniture in the room than to have it completely empty, so potential buy-

ers can imagine where their furniture would go. 5. FOCUS ON CURB APPEAL Keep your lawn mowed, your hedges trimmed, and consider adding flower beds for a bit of colour. Replace your mailbox if it is damaged or in poor condition. Consider painting or replacing your front door. 6. DECIDE ON A COMPETITIVE ASKING PRICE A competitive listing price is one that is similar to listing prices of comparable homes on the market (or those that have recently sold), yet high enough that you’ll make a healthy profit. 7. DISCUSS HOME TOURS AND OPEN HOUSES WITH YOUR AGENT Let your agent know when it’s ok to let
people into your home to see it, and decide on a date for an open house, if that’s what your agent recommends. 8. LET YOUR AGENT TAKE IT FROM THERE They’ll put your home on the multiple listing service in your area, which will get it on sites. They’ll also order and place a “for sale” sign in your yard, so passer-by’s will know. They’ll also start to market the property to potential buyers, via flyers, online advertising and other means. 9. START LOOKING FOR YOUR NEXT HOME In the event that your home sells quickly, you’ll need to be ready to move. Make sure you have something in the pipeline!

3RD ANNIVERSARY O’SHEA
CRONIN
In loving memory of Con Counihan, Dunrine, Kilcummin, Killarney, Who passed away on 25th June 2017. A golden heart stopped beating, Hardworking hands at rest, It broke our hearts to see you go, God only takes the best. They say that memories are golden, Well maybe this is true, But we never wanted memories, We only wanted you. Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you. Our lips cannot speak how we loved you, our hearts cannot tell what to say, But God knows how much we miss you, in our home that is lonely today.
In loving memory of Daniel and Hannah Cronin, Late of Crohane, Fossa, Killarney. Daniel who died on 21st June 1996 and Hannah who died on 18th July 2004. Perhaps if we could see The splendor of the land To which they were called from us Then we would understand. Perhaps if we could hear The welcome they received From old familiar voices, all so dear Then we would not grieve. Perhaps if we could know The reason why they went We’d smile, wiping the tears that flow Then we could wait content. Lovingly remembered by your family.
Sadly missed and always loved by your children.
4TH ANNIVERSARY O’REILLY
2ND ANNIVERSARY
In loving Memory of Paddy “Bomber” O’Shea, Late of O’Sullivan Place, Killarney, Who passed away on June 25th, 2016. God looked around his garden And found an empty space He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest God’s Garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. God knew you were in pain a cure was not to be So he closed your weary eye-lids And whispered come to me. With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you slip away Although we loved you dearly we knew you could not stay. It broke our hearts to lose you but you did not go alone, for part of us went with you that day God called you home. We miss you every day. x Anne, Padraig & Fiona, John & Siobhán, Colm & Marie, Aidan & Catherine, Áine & Karl, Sinéad & your 14 adoring grand-children.

Minors and seniors on the hunt for No. 7 Both the Kerry minors and the Kerry seniors will be hoping to claim their seventh consecutive provincial titles when they face Cork in the Munster final double-header on Saturday evening. In truth, anything other than a Kerry double would be a major shock to the system. Kerry’s recent domination at senior level has been stark and it’s fair to say that the Munster Championship reached its nadir 12 months ago when The Kingdom defeated their greatest rivals by 17 points, 3-18 to 2-4, in the reopened Páirc Uí Chaoimh. That final victory signalled Kerry’s sixth on the bounce; a far cry from the backand-forth nature of Munster football in the good old days of the early 2000s. The lack of competitiveness is naturally of huge concern to Cork, a proud GAA county who won the All-Ireland as recently as 2010, but it also troubles us over here in Kerry. Many feel as though last year’s facile Munster Championship triumph did very little by way of preparing Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s team for the Super 8s, and The Kingdom were certainly found wanting against Galway in the opening fixture. That defeat ultimately put paid to their progress in last year’s championship as a subsequent draw with Monaghan and victory over Kildare were not enough to secure progression to the last four. The worry around these parts is that history could repeat itself in 2019, although Kerry were far from spectacular in their six-point semi-final win against Clare three weeks ago. Peter Keane’s side sparkled at stages in the first half but eventually fell flat as Clare dominated down the stretch. And if their win over Limerick is any-
MUNSTER SFC FINAL
___________________________________________________________
Cork v Kerry Saturday at 7pm Páirc Uí Chaoimh thing to go by, Cork are on the rise and Ronan McCarthy’s men could make things quite uncomfortable for the reigning champions in the Páirc tomorrow evening. So, is their win over Limerick anything to go by? Players like Mark Collins, Brian Hurley and Ruairí Deane impressed on June 1 as the Rebels racked up 3-18 to Limerick’s 0-8 but it is perhaps worth noting that Limerick finished second from bottom in Division 4 of the National League. Kerry, who won six of their eight games in the top tier, will provide a much sterner test. In terms of personnel, midfielder Jack Barry and key defender Paul Murphy are both in line to make a return to the fold, as is diminutive half forward Dara Moynihan. The Kerry team was due to be named late last night. Cork, meanwhile, named an unchanged starting line-up from their victory over Limerick.
MINORS
The Kerry minors are strong favourites to prevail against Cork in the curtain-raiser on the back of their comprehensive 3-19 to 1-9 win over the same opposition in the group phase. Dylan Geaney top-scored with 0-8 in that one as skipper Jack O’Connor and Fossa’s Emmett O’Shea chipped in with 1-3 apiece. With Gearóid Hassett also capable of finding the target, James Costello’s charges certainly appear to have the firepower to make it seven in a row. Throw-in for the minor match is at 4.30pm.

When asked to predict how Kerry will fare in this year’s championship, 18% of respondents said that Kerry will go all the way with 44% stating that a semi-final exit is the most likely outcome. 17% of fans surveyed think that Kerry will reach the All-Ireland final but come up just short of the ultimate prize, while a further 17% foresee elimination at the Super 8s stage. 4% of our less optimistic readers think The Kingdom will fail to make it past the qualifiers. Many observers consider Kerry to be in a period of transition under new manager Peter Keane but expectations for this season remain relatively high amongst the county’s football followers. 55% of fans believe that the Green and Gold need to at least reach the All-Ireland final for 2019 to be classed as a “good year” and a further 78% of Kerry supporters think that Peter Keane's team are going in the right direction. 20% feel that nothing less than reclaiming the Sam Maguire will suffice. However, the survey does also appear to indicate that many Kerry fans are willing to be patient with this young and up-and-coming team. Over half of the supporters surveyed expect Kerry to win their next All-Ireland in 2021 or after, with a quarter predicting success in 2020. Fans are generally happy with the progress being made under Peter Keane with 78% of respondents stating that they are confident that Kerry are heading in the right direction. Looking to this weekend’s Munster final, Kerry supporters don’t appear to be too worried about the challenge posed by old foes Cork. A whopping 93% of the fans who were surveyed think that The Kingdom will claim their seventh consecutive provincial title in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday night.

Women’s soccer is finally in the spotlight... | By Adam Moynihan
Queue the backlash The 2019 Women’s World Cup has been the best promoted and most watched in the tournament’s history. The mainstream media is affording the current iteration of FIFA’s flagship competition for female footballers more coverage than ever before and after decades in the shadows, it appears as though the women’s game is finally getting some much-deserved time in the spotlight. Queue the backlash. Social media has been rife with male commenters belittling the standard of play and unflattering videos highlighting isolated errors have gone viral. Predictably, low-level banter involving kitchens and sandwich-making has been thrown in for good, misogynistic measure. If people genuinely don’t enjoy watching women’s football, that’s fair enough. There’s no denying that it’s different to the men’s game and I suppose it’s worth noting at this point that women and men are not biologically identical. Athletically speaking, men are slightly larger and more powerful. It should therefore stand to reason that mocking women’s soccer for not being as quick as men’s soccer is akin to mocking Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price for not being as quick as Usain Bolt, or mocking Katie Taylor for not being as strong as Tyson Fury.
ENTERTAINMENT
I find it a bit rich that men in this country are willing to take time out of their day to sit down and watch Ireland v Gibraltar, a game that is without any shadow of a doubt absolutely guaran-
teed to be complete and utter tripe, yet flat out refuse to watch a World Cup game between two good teams on the basis that “women’s soccer is shite”. As for guys singling out the individual mistakes that are being made by female players in France, it’s clear that many are using these clips to reinforce their own preconceived notions about women in sport in general. If a top male player made the same kind of mistake, would it get highlighted in the same way? If/when Romelu Lukaku tries to do a step-over, stands on the ball and suddenly becomes inverted in comical fashion, men take the piss out of Romelu Lukaku. If a woman does the same thing, the same men take the piss out of women as a gender. The funny thing is, if you dropped a lot of the most vocal critics of the women’s game into a training session with the US women’s team, they’d be found out in the very first rondo. Goalkeeping errors also seem to be a source of great amusement to some observers. While it’s certainly true that there has been some dodgy keeping in the Women’s World Cup, it’s also true that there are erratic keepers in every major men’s tournament. Again, their errors are taken to be a sign that the goalkeeper in question is a bit rubbish, not that every goalkeeper on the planet with same amount of chromosomes is a bit rubbish.
ONE-SIDED GAMES

SPORT
21.06.2019 of the globe to the game’s biggest stage. The women’s tournament expanded from 16 to 24 in 2015 and if the powers that be have their way, the men’s competition will have 128 teams by the 2042 World Cup, which will presumably be staged on Deimos, the smaller of Mars’ two moons. This exercise in inclusivity is ostensix bly a good thing but the downside is that it invariably compromises the end product as it leads to a massive disparity between the strongest and weakest teams on show. You can’t expect countries like South x Africa and Thailand to produce the same calibre of players as the United States or Germany. They’re simply at different stages in their developmental arc in terms of women’s football. The | fact that these teams are getting well beaten doesn’t mean that the women’s game is poor, it means that FIFA don’t know how to structure a tournament properly. The United States’ 13-0 drubbing of Thailand has been the biggest talking point of the tournament to date, not so much because of the scoreline itself but rather the behaviour of the Americans as the scoreline materialised. The USA built up a big lead with consummate ease but, controversially, their players continued to celebrate their goals long after the match had ended as a contest. Veteran striker Megan Rapinoe’s rather elaborate celebration for goal number nine appeared to be particularly gratuitous, and as the tenth, eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth goals rolled in, the reactions grew only marginally more muted. The perceived lack of restraint was the focus of great scrutiny in the States and personally I would be of the opinion that the behaviour of the players was a touch disrespectful considering the circumstances. Having said that, I also have no doubt
United States forward Mallory Pugh. The US were criticised for their goal celebrations during last week's 13-0 win over Thailand.
that some opponents of the women’s game were only too happy to magnify the incident purely to further their own grubby agenda, just as they did 20 years ago when Brandi Chastain was roundly chastised for taking her shirt off and baring her sports bra while celebrating her winning penalty in the 1999 World Cup final. The American’s conduct was widely condemned as being “inappropriate”. Earlier that same year, Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs celebrated in a similar fashion when he scored that wondergoal against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final. Of course, there was no public outcry then. To be frank, I find that amount of chest hair to be more inappropriate than a sports bra, but to each their own I suppose.
EQUAL PAY
All of this friction between female athletes and the media/sports community as a whole invariably comes back around to money. Progress has been made in recent years but the pay gap between women and men is still far more striking in sport than it is in the real world. In the US, for example, women in the workplace earn 81 cents to the male dollar. Meanwhile, WNBA players make a minimum annual salary of $50,000, while salaries for their male counterparts in the NBA start at $582,180. Of course, the NBA is a far more profitable league so it stands to reason that their stars command larger pay cheques. Whether or not the salaries earned by WNBA players are commensurate to the earnings of their league is another question. The curious case of the USWNT (as the US Women’s National Team is rather clunkily known) is quite different. They have won three World Cups and four Olympic gold medals since 1991, arguably becoming the country’s favourite national team in the process. In
61
the same period, the men have never advanced beyond the last 16 and they failed to even qualify for the last World Cup in Russia. Significantly, the women also command a larger domestic TV viewership. Yet despite outperforming the men in every possible metric, America’s female players earn significantly less. When they won the World Cup in 2015, the US women received $1.725m from the US Soccer Federation. A year later, the men’s team were awarded $5.375m simply for reaching the knockout phase. In a New York Times op-ed, striker Carli Lloyd explained that she receives $60 a day for expenses when travelling internationally. Male players get $75. “Maybe they figure that women are smaller and thus eat less,” she said. On March 16 of this year (International Women’s Day), the USWNT players filed a lawsuit against US Soccer alleging “institutional gender discrimination”. US Soccer argue that the women aren’t entitled to equal pay, because they’re not doing equal work. The case is likely to drag on into 2020 and possibly beyond.
COVERAGE
The way some people have reacted to the recent coverage of the women’s game, you’d swear RTÉ bumped the Champions League final to show Cameroon versus New Zealand in Group E of the Women’s World Cup. I certainly can’t claim to be a great supporter of women’s football and given a choice, I’d watch a top men’s game before I’d watch a top women’s game. I think most people would feel the same. Luckily for soccer fans, it’s not always a case of either-or. There’s not much soccer on TV at the moment so if you want to watch a women’s game, you can. And if you’d rather not watch women’s soccer full stop, that’s grand too. Change the channel.

Local crew Kevin O'Donoghue and Timmy Kelly will compete on this weekend’s Donegal International Rally. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.
Kerry rally fans to make long trek to Hills of Donegal Ireland’s only three-day rally, the Donegal International Rally, will be well underway by the time the Killarney Advertiser hits the shelves this week and there are plenty of Kerry-based competitors in action in the northwest worth keeping an eye on. The 160 entrants will tackle 20 stages over the next three days. Action commenced earlier today (Friday) as the crews set out to complete six stages in the Buncrana, Burt and Manorcunningham areas. Service will be based in Letterkenny. There are eight stages on the Saturday menu with roads such as Gartan, High Glen, Knockalla and Carnhill high on the agenda. The real sting in the tail will be on Sunday as the traditional loop of stages around Fanad Head and Atlantic Drive are joined by another classic from the past: Port Lake, which has not been used for several years. Centralised ser-
vice for all crews on Saturday and Sunday is in Milford. There are hundreds of local fans, representing the two clubs in the county, making the long journey to the northwest to cheer on the Kerry entrants in this much-loved mid-summer event. Here we have listed the drivers, co-drivers and cars to watch over the next three days. |
2 - Craig Breen/Paul Nagle
(Ford Fiesta WRC) Hot favourites will be Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes winners Craig Breen and his local co-driver Paul Nagle. They will use a Ford Fiesta WRC for their tilt at Done-
gal success, putting their championship aspirations on hold until at least the Ulster Rally in August as WRC drivers cannot score championship points. |
3 6 - Barry Meade/ Dean O’Sullivan
(Ford Escort Mk2) Killarney and District Motor Club member Barry Meade will be hoping for top honours in the national section and he has local Donegal co-driver Dean O’Sullivan alongside him in a Ford Escort Mk2. |
4 9 - Kevin O’Donoghue/ Timmy Kelly
(BMW M3) Southern Four Rally championship leaders Kevin O’Donoghue and Timmy Kelly are also entered in the national section. They will be hoping for better luck after retiring last year on the Saturday with gearbox problems.
|
67 - Gary Cooney/Elaine Ní Shé
(Subaru Impreza WRC S12B) Killarney school teacher and co-driver Elaine Ní Shé is will compete alongside Gary Cooney in his Subaru Impreza WRC. It is her second time co-driving for the Donegal driver. |
2 - Mark Falvey/ H Diarmuid Lynch
(Ford Escort Mk1) The Historic Rally will run behind the main field for all of the Saturday and Sunday stages and Mark Falvey and Diarmuid Lynch are the second seeds in their Escort Mk1. They finished second on the Killarney Historic Rally last year, which was the last time the local pair competed together. |
J 1 - Colin O’Donoghue/ Eddie Doherty
(Ford Escort Mk1) Colin O’Donoghue marks his second outing in his newly-built Escort and will lead the junior field away on Sunday morning. The Junior Rally will tackle six stages on Sunday, including the famed Atlantic Drive.

Paul Nagle and Craig Breen are confirmed as the number two seeds for the legendary Ypres Rally in Belgium next weekend. They will drive a Volkswagen Polo R5 for the first time. Principle
opposition for the Irish crew will come from two-time Belgian champion Kris Princen and 11-time Ypres winner Freddy Loix who is driving a Skoda Fabia R5. |

Crokes recover to down cross-town rivals Legion COUNTY LEAGUE: DIVISION 1 _________________________________________________________________________
Dr Crokes
0-12 | Killarney Legion 0-9
LEWIS ROAD
Defending champions Dr Crokes overcame an early four-point deficit to defeat near neighbours Killarney Legion in Lewis Road on Sunday. Both sides were missing a number of regular starters but it looked as though Legion were unperturbed early doors as they quickly ran up a four-nil lead. Conor Keane was doing the damage for Stephen Stack’s side with youngster Michael Devlin also looking lively, but it didn’t take long for the Crokes to get a foothold in the game. The hosts improved in the second quarter and tacked on five crucial points but Legion just about kept their noses in front to lead 0-7 to 0-5 at the break. The second period was one to forget for the men from Derreen as they managed to add just two more scores in the 30 minutes. Dr Crokes, with Kieran O’Leary and Daithí Casey to the fore, powered
into the lead and eventually prevailed with three points to spare. It was a disappointing result for Legion who were left ruing a string of missed first-half opportunities. Dr Crokes, meanwhile, celebrated a second win over their fiercest rivals this season as they moved onto eight points in Division 1 of the County League. DR CROKES SCORERS: Kieran O'Leary (0-3), Brian Looney (0-3), Daithí Casey (0-3), Mike Casey (0-2) and Michael Potts (0-1). LEGION SCORERS: Conor Keane (0-5), Michael Devlin (0-2), Kieran Slattery (01) and Peter McCarthy (0-1).

spectively. There was an eight-way tie for second heading into last weekend’s round of fixtures and the picture this week isn’t much clearer. There are now seven teams level at the summit on eight. At the other end, things are beginning to look bleak for Templenoe, Na Gaeil and St Mary’s, all of whom are in danger of being cut adrift. Down in Division 2, Glenflesk, who are currently without a staggering amount of key players due to injury and suspension, are now in big trouble following their most recent defeat to Dromid Pearses. Dr Crokes B suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Annascaul but there was better news for Beaufort as they scored a 1-14 to 0-11 win over Brosna. Unfortunately, Gneeveguilla’s Division 3 match with Milltown/Castlemaine had to be abandoned due to a serious injury to Milltown/Castlemaine player. That game has been rescheduled for this coming Sunday at 2pm.
a hard-fought 4-8 to 3-9 win over Na Gaeil thanks in part to goals from Cormac Cronin, Niall McCarthy, Shane Cronin and Mike Foley. Kilcummin also moved into a tie for the lead with a comprehensive victory over whipping boys St Mary’s. Matt Keane registered an impressive tally of 1-7 and Kerry U20 captain Seán O’Leary added a goal as the All-Ireland Intermediate champions ran out 2-20 to 0-10 winners. Rathmore also picked up their fourth victory of the season with a narrow two-point win over An Ghaeltacht while Austin Stacks and Kerins O’Rahilly’s had big wins over Dingle and Templenoe reDIVISION 1 P 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6
