"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb
LITTER LOUTS ARE A DISGRACE ILLEGAL dumping of domestic waste continues to blight our town and its surrounds thanks to anti-social activities of litter louts. National Parks & Wildlife Service regional manager Pat Dawson this week issued a heartfelt plea to the public to show more respect for the environment and the worldfamous jewel in our town’s tourism crown, Killarney National Park. This move came after Killarney National Park conservation ranger Brendan O’Shea came across an unsightly pile of domestic rubbish flung behind the Upper Torc car park. “I would like to appeal to the public, through the Killarney Advertiser, to consider the impact on our wonderful natural heritage of such disgraceful anti-social behaviour,” said Pat Dawson. “With the limited resources currently available to us in the National Park, we have more important tasks to focus on than collecting and disposing of the domestic rubbish of those who do not respect or care for our environment. When others, including Park staff and dedicated volunteers, put so much time and effort into maintaining our beautiful surroundings, it is heart-breaking to come across this type of dumping in the National Park.” Images taken by a member of the public and placed on social media caused consternation on Saturday. The area was cleared again that evening but Mr Dawson said “indiscriminate dumping” has to stop. Illegal dumping is a “consistent” problem throughout Killarney and Kerry, according to Micheal Ó Coileáin of Kerry county Council. “People will take their bags of rubbish and dump them in the mountains, rivers or National Park. Some will cruise around town and fill other people’s bins or dump fridges or other white goods just 200m from a recycling centre, where it is free to dispose of such items,” Mr Ó Coileáin told Killarney Advertiser. “It is just daft.”

Gardaí find €15,000 worth of drugs in Killarney DURING the past week, Killarney Gardaí have confirmed that they have searched five properties in he general Killarney area. Assorted controlled drugs were seized. This culminated in Killarney Gardaí recovering over €15,000 worth of cannabis in a property off the Ross Road. Investigations in relation to the matter are ongoing and prosecutions will follow. The search was part of an ongoing investigation into the Sale and Supply of drugs in the Killarney area. A man was questioned in relation to the find and a file is being prepared for the DPP. “We wish to reassure the public that all activity in relation to supply and use of where controlled drugs will be fully investigated and prosecutions will follow there is available evidence,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told Killarney Advertiser.

The rubbish found dumped at the Upper Torc car park in Killarney National Park last weekend.
LET’S CRY FOUL AT LITTER BUGS IT’S THE stark contrasts that bother me most when it comes to illegal dumping. I think in Killarney we are all familiar with the sight of hard-working volunteers and council staff out and about in all weathers cleaning the streets as well as the highways and byways after thoughtless, anti-social fellow citizens have strewn their rubbish about. And the image of anglers out for their early morning outing and suddenly faced with the less-than-appealing prospect of reeling in bursting bags of refuse floating down the river (as happened in Beaufort earlier this year) is another sign of this unfairly pitched and unnecessary battle. Illegal dumping is a widespread and consistent problem across Killarney
and the county, according to Mícheál Ó Coileáin of Kerry County Council. But what really struck me was the fact that people will go to extreme lengths and lavish time, effort and care on avoiding what is, as Mr Ó Coileáin says, a cost that is often no more than the price of a cup of coffee a week. The concept of people cruising around for hours in a bid to fill other – law-abiding – householders’ bins is also quite mind-boggling. But until the law changes, there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot that can be done to solve this problem. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

THE Bro Aled Male Voice Choir will make the trip from North Wales to take centre stage in the INEC Acoustic Club next week. The choir, which will host a concert in the INEC on Thursday, October 27, is returning to Killarney after they won the choir of the year competition at the Pan Celtic festival held in Killarney in 1985. Rhys Llwelyn, a member of KMRT, said: “They are doing this concert for no charge, all they are asking is for all the proceeds go to a local charity, and since my father is in the choir and that I'm a member of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, they are delighted that the proceeds are going to KMRT.” Bro Aled is a cluster of rural communities in the shelter of Mynydd Hiraethog (or Denbigh Moors) in North Wales. This was also the home of Gwilym Hiraethog, the poet and preacher, whose famous hymn ‘Dyma gariad fel y moroedd' (‘His love is as an ocean') is in the choir’s repertoire. Many of its members remember competing in the Pan-Celtic Festival, held in 1985 in Killarney, when they won the Male Voice Choir competition and wereawarded with the prestigious title of choir of the year. “This visit to Ireland is to celebrate our 40th anniversary, since we established as a small choir of 12 members. Due to our success, the 12 soon doubled and increased again,” said a spokesman. “Our members are from a mixed background, farming being most prevalent, we have teachers, builders and the list goes on, including those who have retired.”

Question
We think that the water pipes in our house are made of lead and pose a risk to our health. We can’t afford to spend a lot on replacing them. Can we get a grant? Answer
The local authorities administer a means-tested grant scheme to help low-income households with the cost of replacing lead pipes and fittings. You will need to provide evidence of your household’s income when applying to the local authority for the grant. •If your income is below €50,000 a year, you may get a grant of up to 80% of the cost, up to a maximum of €4,000 •If your income is between €50,001 and €75,000, you may get up to 50%, up to a maximum of €2,500 You must own the dwelling and live in it as your principal private residence (your main home). You must get the remedial work done before applying for the grant. The contractor who does the work must give you the following: a current tax clearance certificate; itemised receipts; written confirmation that materials used are of appropriate quality and written confirmation that a proper standard of workmanship has been applied. You must also get evidence of a risk of lead contamination in your home. This can either be: •A letter from your water supplier, advising that your water system is likely to cotain lead pipes and fittings, or •A certificate from an accredited laboratory, showing that the amount of lead in your water supply is over the statutory limit You will need to enclose all these documents with your grant application. Ian Whitty & The Exchange are playing in Courtney’s Bar, Killarney, on Saturday, October 29, and will launch their new album Cash Crop on November 11.
Spotlight on Killarney singer-songwriter Ian Whitty AN EIGHT-YEAR odyssey has led talented Killarney singer-songwriter Ian Whitty to weave a rich modern tapestry of storytelling. Ian Whitty & The Exchange are back this autumn with their new album, Cash Crop, due for release on Friday, November 11, and they will be performing in Courtney’s Bar (upstairs) in Killarney on Saturday, October 29, with Emily Kraemer as special guest. Cash Crop veers from simple stripped-back melodies to riotous guitar overtures to Americana. “ I ’ m declaring war,” sings Whitty on the opening track Bottom Line. Ian’s lyrics conjure up dreams of young love as well as hope and meaning in the face of loss. They delve into disillusionment with modern culture and chart an evolution from partner to parent. The album constantly draws the listener into an emotional exploration, all the while Whitty’s seasoned vocal is gravelly with experience, biting in its commentary and sharp in its storytelling. He frequently shifts perspectives, personas and characters in weaving a modern tapestry that manages to be both personal and full of symbolism. It took eight years for Ian to travel the roads and bear witness to the events that we find in Cash Crop. In doing so he has provided us with an album that is warm and intimate yet feels epic in its scope. “Making a record is a genuinely difficult thing to do,” said Ian. “Simply put, it’s easier to make a mess of it than to get it right. That said we are ready to walk away from this one feeling like we have captured something with a real identity, that we haven’t let any of the songs down and that we have challenged ourselves creatively in the process.” With the intent of capturing both the energy and intimacy of live shows Cash Crop was recorded in “live” spaces including One Chance Out Studios in Cork. The album was co-produced by Ian Whitty & The Exchange, Steve Fanagan and Chris Somers. It was engineered by Chris Somers and predominantly mixed by Steve Fanagan. Cash Crop was mastered at Whisper and Shout Studios, Los Angeles by Ruairi O’Flaherty. Long-time collaborator Suzanne Power of Hazel Tree Design created the sartorial artwork for the album from Ian’s basic sketches. In a time where playlists are consumed on demand and unlimited choice is on offer Cash Crop invites you to become a confidant and will have you pressing repeat rather than browse.

Killarney Gardaí recover valuable road bike in ‘sting’ operation

Paddy Casey is Killarney bound K TOWN Bar will present Paddy Casey next Friday, October 28. A limited number of tickets, €18, are on sale in K-Town Bar, Beech Road. Paddy will be supported by Cathal Flaherty and Jono Clifford. Doors open at 7.30pm for the event, which is for over-18s.
KILLARNEY GARDAÍ recovered a stolen racing bicycle following a "sting" operation in Dublin during the past week. The bike, a valuable, high performance road bike, was stolen from O’Sullivan’s Cycles on in High Street, Killarney, the previous week and roaming criminals are believed to be responsible. It is understood that undercover Killarney Gardaí posed as buyers for the bicycle when they became aware of it being offered for sale in the west Dublin area and recovered the bike. “I am delighted with the successful outcome to this operation,” said Superintendent Flor Murphy. Killarney Gardaí are continuing to investigate the matter and arrests are expected. O’Sullivan’s Cycles owner David O’Sullivan thanked Killarney Gardaí for their recovery of the road bike.

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL members have pledged to do everything in their power to help prevent residents of St Mary of the Angels from being relocated from the centre in Beaufort. Concerned family members made an impassioned plea at this week’s council meeting to stop their loved ones being moved out of their home in Beaufort under the HSE’s “decongregation” policy. The St Mary of the Angels Parents and Relatives Association chairperson Jack Fitzpatrick addressed the meeting, seeking their help. Councillors were unanimous in their support for the group. A number of politicians have also raised the matter at national level. Kerry Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil argued with Minister Finian McGrath that “a one-size fits all approach will not, and cannot work, for a community such as St Mary of the Angels”. “There are as many patients, and their families, who want to remain in the facility. They should not be forced by the HSE to move to a new residential setting against their wishes,” he said. He added: “While I accept that best practice is for patients to be moved away from ward-style settings, this can still be done in St Mary of the Angels if the HSE commits to investing in improving, and developing the facility.” Deputy Brassil said: “The sense of community amongst the residents must be protected.” Seanad leas-cathaoirleach Senator Paul Coghlan has also called on Minister McGrath to ensure that St Mary of The Angels is exempted from the national “Time to Move On” policy, noting it provides “a world class service” to a number of residents in Kerry with special needs.

Talented Valerie in the frame for book launch
IT WAS a full house in Kate Kearney’s Cottage last Saturday as talented Killarney photographer Valerie O’Sullivan unveiled her new book. The award-winning snapper immortalised the faces and places of Ireland’s highest mountain range in the publication, The MacGillycuddy's Reeks: People and Places of Ireland’s Highest Mountain Range which charts the rich diversity of its people and landscape. “Despite their increasing popularity amongst hillwalkers and climbers, the mountains’ remote and marginal nature is their commanding characteristic,” said Valerie, who is herself a keen mountaineer. The design and layout of the book is by Cathal Cudden, Bright Idea, and it was officially launched by broadcaster Frank Lewis and Patricia Deane, rural recreation officer, South Kerry Development Partnership. Valerie will be signing copies of the book in Eason, Killarney, tomorrow, Saturday, from 12 midday. The people of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks are the dominant feature of the book. A chapter is also dedicated to the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and Valerie will be donating a sizeable portion of the proceeds of this book to the team.

Rescue team scales new heights to celebrate half a century
George Teahan, Patrick Duffy Shea, John O'Sullivan and James Flynn.
George Teahan, Eric Brick, Hillary Falvey, Patrick Duffy Shea and John O’Sullivan.
THE Kerry Mountain Rescue Team invites the public to help it mark its half-century birthday, tomorrow, Saturday, October 22, when it hosts an open day. The celebrations will take place from 2pm to 4.30pm at the mountain rescue station, in the grounds of Killarney Garda Station. The team was formed in Easter 1966 following a tragic holiday period in Kerry. Within a few days of one another, a student from University College Dublin and a teenage member of an English school party were killed in separate incidents on Carrantuohill, Ireland's highest peak. It was as a direct result of these two tragedies that the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was formed in July 1966, largely as a result of the vision and energy of Frank Lewis of Killarney. The Team at that stage consisted of a group of concerned people who were prepared to set their own lives at risk to help others in distress. Early members included Paddy O'Callaghan, Stan Brick, Gearóid O'Sullivan and Richard Morrison, Killorglin, along with Killarney representatives such as Terence Casey and John McGuire. Meetings were held around the fireplace in Paddy's house, and as Gearóid O'Sullivan recalled: "It didn't matter whether we had high heels or mountaineering boots at the time – those questions weren't even asked then". The team had an early “baptism of fire” in the form of the July 1967 all-night rescue of Bill Collins, after whom Collins' Gully is named. This was the Team's first major rescue and to this day remains one of the most epic ever undertaken in Kerry. In the words of Paddy O'Callaghan: "The rain was dreadful that night and we weren't even sure about where we were going. The terrain was desperate and we had no helmets and only minimum equipment. We could have been killed or injured ourselves but the mission was a success and we went on from there.” On a lighter note, many of the early Team members still enjoy a chuckle over the “missing” honeymoon couple, who were eventually found tucked up safe and well in their tent after trying to get away from the crowds. As one Team member said, "It was hard to know whether it was us or them who had the reddest face when we unzipped the tent!"

ON THE eve of Dr Crokes’ senior county championship win at the weekend, the club’s team that won the Kerry County Championship and Munster Club Championship in 1991 enjoyed a reunion function. Most of the team, together with representatives of those not present, enjoyed a get-together in the Randles Hotel, Killarney, on Saturday night. The team not only won the county and Munster club championships but went on to win the All-Ireland Club Championship in March 1992. Photographer Eamonn Keogh recreated the team photograph taken by his fellow Killarney snapper Sean Kelly a quarter of a century ago. “There are a lot of similarities with everybody who was present for both photos standing or sitting in the exact same position in both pictures. The middle row is exactly the same in both,” said Eamonn. Missing from the photograph last Saturday night were Patsy Courtney (RIP), Padraig O’Shea, Mark Cooper and John Foley. The additions in 2016 photo are Denis Coleman (2016 chairman), Patrick O’Sullivan (Kerry GAA chairman), Teddy Counihan (1991 chairman) and Martin Byrnes (who is actually missing the official team photo 25 years ago).

THE importance for women to provide for their retire- PICTURES: IAN CRONIN, ICPHOTOSTUDIO ment was the key topic of an event in Killarney on Monday. Speaker Susan Hayes Culleton, also known as the Positive Economist, held her audience in spellbound as she addressed a gathering of local businesswomen in the Killarney Park Hotel. With only 47% of women in Ireland having some form of pension outside of the State pension, Vincent Casey Life & Pensions, Killarney, organised this event to highlight the matter and dedicated the week from October 17-24 to specifically address retirement planning for women. “Raising awareness of the importance for women to provide for retirement while providing valuable insights as to how women can successfully get more out of their businesses, were the main themes of the presentation,” said Vincent. “Susan Hayes Culleton captured these with an excellent half hour presentation on the opportunities that are in business today for those who really want to seek out and maximise the potential of their Therese McDonagh, Josie Slattery, Caragh Neeson and Laura Budreikaite. business.”

DESPITE the weather playing spoilsport on the day of the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show, the event organiser Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club still helped to generate an impressive €36,600 for local charities this year. Supported by the hard work and fundraising efforts of the four charities involved, the torrential downpour on September 11 didn’t completely spoil the day and the gate receipts, fundraising initiatives and other events organised by the club and its supporters helped to boost the charity coffers. The four organisations to benefit were the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, Kerry Down Syndrome and Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus and they all worked so hard to ensure the funds generating potential was maximised. In addition, €500 donations have been made to support both the autism unit at Fossa National School and St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School in Tralee. Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club also received huge support in the fundraising drive from Kerry Macra and Mid Kerry Macra, Kenmare Mart, the Killarney Water Rescue Unit and Kerry Hospice. Other club events that helped raise funds for the charities involved were a vintage car show in July and a tractor and vintage car run in April. The committee, sponsors and friends of the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club gathered at the Travel Inn in Fossa for the presentation of ploughing prizes and the handing over of cheques to representatives of the four chosen charities. Event chairman Tom Leslie has thanked everybody that attended and supported the event on September 11.

Cupid is a class act BY EVE KELLIHER
T
HEY met in their final year of teacher training at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick in 2009 and seven years later Máire McEllistrem and Michael Horan exchanged wedding vows. Both primary school teachers, they got engaged in February 2015 at Ross Castle in Killarney and returned to the town for their wedding reception, which took place in the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Máire, from Ballylongford, and Scartaglin native Michael were wed in St Michael’s Church in Ballylongford by Fr Padraig Kennelly, accompanied by Fr John Lawlor. They posed for the camera of Martin Cleary during the day, with photo-shoots at Carrigafoyle Castle Ballylongford and the Lake Hotel Killarney. Helping them celebrate with their guess were both sets of parents, Catherine and Tim McEllistrem and Margaret and Tony Horan. Máire’s sisters Cáit and Anna McEllistrem joined forces with Michael’s sister Eileen Horan to
take on bridesmaid duties, while Michael’s friend Brian Reidy and cousin Gareth Ryle were groomsmen alongside Máire’s brother Michael McEllistrem. The bride’s cousins Paula and Jim Culhane were flower girl and pageboy respectively. Friends travelled from Asia and the UK while close family made the trip from Chicago and Florida for the wedding. The bride looked stunning n a LouLou London ivory duchess satin dress teamed with Rachel Simpson shoes. The groom and his party cut a dapper dash in suits from Formally Yours, Killarney. Brendan Reidy from Scartaglin was the videographer. Local church musician Katie McNamara performed during the church ceremony, as did friends and family members who also performed during the reception. The Cordal-based newlyweds honeymooned in Cancun, Mexico, and New York City.

Do you suffer from Computer Vision Syndrome? Research has shown that Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) can affect anyone who spends 3 or more hours a day in front of digital devices. Almost 90% of people who use digital devices extensively, have one or more symptoms of CVS. The effects of prolonged computer use are not just vision-related. Complaints include headaches and neck and back pain. Still, the most common computer-related complaint involves the eyes, which can develop blurred or double vision as well as burning, itching, dryness and redness.
What can I do?
•Have your eyes examined regularly to be sure your prescription is up-to-date •Those who work from printed materials, moving back and forth from them to the screen, should consider getting special glasses or contact lenses—with the upper portion ideal for screen reading and the lower designed for print distance. •Use the 20/20/20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. •To give the eyes a comfortable focusing distance, the screen should be about 20 to 26 inches away from the face. •Ask about glare-reducing lenses that protect eyes from harmful Blue-Violet and UV light •Consciously blink as often as possible to keep eye surfaces well lubricated. Use lubricating eye drops if necessary.

INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on the benefits of Indian head massage
THE practice of Indian head massage is especially good for relieving stress, tension, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, migraine and sinusitis. The experience is deeply calming and relaxing, leaving them feeling energised and revitalised and better able to concentrate. Indian head massage helps increase joint mobility and flexibility in the neck and shoulders, improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow, frees knots of muscular tension, relaxes connective tissue, and aids in the elimination of accumulated toxins and waste products aid lymphatic drainage, helps to release toxins. What is it? Indian head massage is a form of treatment that works on the muscular tissues of the scalp, neck, shoulders upper back, upper arms and face. These areas hold much of the stress we accumulate in day to day living.
What can it treat? Its benefits include easing the muscles of the neck and shoulders. Circulation and lymph drainage are enhanced in building tissues and getting rid of toxins. Thus the immune system is given a boost as well as promoting growth of healthy hair. Tensions and headaches are eased and the mind, body and spirit return to their own centre of calm. Who can benefit? This practice is suitable for adults of any age, as well as pregnant women, the elderly and infirm. Indian head massage is perfect during work as a half-hour "time out" or at the end of a long day to help you unwind! •Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is open till 7.30pm every Monday and Thursday so it is possible to have a treatment on the way home from work. 'Exercise not only changes your body, it changes your attitude and you rmood' Louise Devaney, fitness instructor, leisure centre manager and personal trainer, highlights the importance of exercise in your mental as well as physical wellbeing ON OCTOBER 10 we celebrated World Mental Health day and it was a celebration, as slowly but surely we are banishing the stigma attached to mental health. It was so encouraging to see the positive posts on social media, positive articles in the paper and on the exposure on the television, as the media have such a significant role to play in this battle to get people suffering in silence to seek the help they need. Help is definitely available through such fantastic organisations like Aware and also from the HSE but this battle for some people can be lifelong and the condition may come and go during different stages of their lives, so a change of lifestyle to improve the symptoms is a must. The introduction of exercise to your daily life can massively improve the symptoms of depression and anxiety and have many psychological and emotional benefits. It helps you gain confidence, take your mind off worries, enjoy more social interaction, cope in a health way and improve self-esteem. Exercise not only changes your body it changes your attitude and you mood. Can a short walk help improve your
mood? It may do but probably not enough to lift your spirits, but a regular exercise routine will help. The intensity of your workout is vital, as it must be enough for your body to produce that happy hormone (endorphins). I’m a believer that a little bit of sweat is always a good thing. When you first start your exercise programme you should plan a routine that is easy to follow and maintain, when you start feeling comfortable with your routine then you can start varying your exercise intensity. A personalised gym programme is a fantastic way to introduce yourself to the gym and regular exercise, to have a plan to work from is a great focus to keep the routine in place and also having the support of a gym instructor to motivate you can be invaluable. Group exercise classes are also highly motivating and a very social outlet. Stick with it if you exercise regularly it will soon become part of your lifestyle and will help reduce your depression and anxiety and change your life for the better.

Lights, camera and action for 17th Kerry Film Festival
LAST WEEK’S SUDOKU ANSWERS
THE red carpet was rolled out in Killarney this week for Kerry Film Festival which will run for five days and showcase short films as well as feature films. The festival will open with the soldout world premiere of Kerry-made feature film Making It and will close with the world premiere of Brackenmore. Making It was produced by the National Digital Skills Centre at Kerry Education and Training Board and Brakenmore was produced by Caragh Lake Films which collaborated with a number of local organisations including Kerry County Council and the Kerry ETB. “The production of these films is a testament to the determination of production companies filming in Kerry and the wealth of locations in Kerry suitable for filming,” said the festival’s artistic director Maeve McGrath. The short film programme is an integral part of the Kerry Film Festival schedule and this year
there are 16 programmes of short film. “With an international focus on short film reflected in the programme including a new exchange of films with the renowned Kendal Mountain Festival, there is also an overflowing programme of Kerry short films in the Kerry Connection programme highlighting the wealth of creative talent creating film in the county,” added Maeve. Filmmakers and Industry professionals will gather in Killarney on October 22 for the festival’s Short Film Market where panel discussions and conversations will take place with industry guests discussing short film and a special focus on the diaspora in the Irish International Film Festival panel. Jim Cummings, winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance festival, will give a Masterclass on his journey to Sundance with Thunder Road and there will be a casting workshop for actors with Sing Street casting agent,

Grace Notes No man is an island
Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley highlights the importance of looking after your mental health
I JUST watched an online video of actor Charlie Day giving a motivational speech at a high school in America. In this speech he says that people will tell you to do what makes you happy, but he himself isn't always happy. He says that sometimes doing what he does is very hard. The actor advises that you shouldn't try to do what makes you happy, you should do what makes you great. I absolutely love this statement. There have been so many times that people have told me that it must be great to do something I love everyday and I have felt guilty because I don't love it every day. In fact, some days are very very difficult. But I keep going because I do have a love and passion for my job. October 10 was World Mental Health Day. On this day I was very touched by the amount of people who spoke out about their own struggles with their mental health. Mental health issues have touched all our lives, either personally or someone we know. I have not been spared. There are days I am
nervous, which is perfectly normal for a performer, and there are days when I am so anxious that performing is the very last thing I feel like doing. This “black dog” of negativity can wander into all our lives at times and he can decide to wreak havoc everywhere he goes. As a performer you must always put on a show and when anxiety hits the show continues but an even bigger mask is required. I don't find it easy to speak out about this but I feel it is vital that people know that it truly is ok to not be ok and the more you hear others open up about their struggles, the more you realise that we are all just delicate, complex beings who need the support of others. No man is an island, don't try to be one. I think that people like Bressie who have spoken about their own journeys with depression and anxiety have made a huge impact on people. People onstage are perceived as being so confident and brave but they are just humans playing a role. I don't doubt that they love what they do but they too struggle to get up there sometimes. The show must go on. Life must go on. Look after the main character in your own show. Look after your mental health. Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
LUKE 19:9-14: There can be an element of defensiveness in our relationships with others. We are reluctant to let another see us as we see ourselves. Occasionally, we meet someone with whom we can be totally open and know we will be accepted. With whom have you had that kind of a relationship? What was it like for you to have that freedom? Likewise with God, when we come to prayer pretending to be better than we are, we are hiding from God. What difference does it make when you pray to God, acknowledging your faults and limitations? Have you ever found that when you are humble in this way in prayer, God lifts you up? The parable is also a cautionary tale against judging others negatively on the basis of externals. Perhaps God, who looks into the heart, sees another picture. When have you discovered there was more to another person than the negative picture you got from first impressions? MUSINGS
HARD bargaining is inimical to robust loving. Effective bargaining is built on perceived strengths. Enriching love thrives on trustful acceptance. A bargaining heart misses out on the fulfilment of generosity. Selfrighteousness blocks out the balm of enriching friendship. The Pharisee in this Sunday’s Gospel sets out his stall very well. His fidelity to the accepted norms is above reproach. His report card merits ten out of ten at least. He is a cut above the rest. He can bargain with the Lord from strength. What he wants in prayer is affirmation in self-righteousness, approval from his peers and first place in the pecking order. The man at the back of the temple has no bargaining chips. He believes in a different God. His heart is just open to healing mercy; to a tender welcome; to new beginnings; to ongoing, enriching love; true friendships, human and divine. The two men may be in the temple at the same time, but have very different agendas. Fr Tom Clancy, Veritas

The Provocateur ‘DRESSING IN BLACK AND SALLYING FORTH ON A BIKE WITHOUT A LIGHT AT NIGHT IS NO WAY TO STAY SAFE’ WHY, oh why, in this day and age, can’t cyclists ensure they are visible at dusk and night? Twice in one weekend recently I saw near-misses in two separate instances in Killarney where the cyclists concerned could not have done a better job if they had tried at rendering themselves invisible. On the first occasion, a Saturday night, a car trying to emerge from a driveway on Countess Road had to brake sharply as a male cyclist, looking for all the world like the fabled Milk Tray man from those ads (or indeed a classically attired cat burglar), sailed by without a care in the world. I know drivers can often be remiss in allocating enough space to fellow road users, including cyclists, but seriously, we all have to take responsibility for our own safety too. And dressing head to toe in black, hopping on a bike without a light, and sallying forth on busy roads under cover of darkness is not the way to do it. Accidents due to a lack of bicycle lights present a real danger in daily traffic, and now that the days are getting darker this cycling hazard is becoming even more relevant. The same weekend, two young women, again not a light between them and wearing dark clothing, threw caution to the winds and powered along a busy Muckross Road at night. The only way they were to be seen at all was through the illuminating effect of the red lights they blithely ignored at the junction with Ross Road as they pedalled towards town. A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + BACKGROUND NOISE TO BLAME The elderly struggle to keep up with family conversations because of too much background noise rather than poor hearing alone. Researchers identified a change in the brains of typical older adults, even when their hearing is normal. They said many pensioners find it difficult to follow speech amid background noise, even when their hearing is considered normal in a clinical assessment. In a study published by the Journal of Neurophysiology, researchers from the University of Maryland found that adults aged 61-73 with normal hearing scored significantly worse on speech understanding in noisy environments than adults aged 18-30 with normal hearing. The report authors said: “Evidence of degraded representation of speech in noise, in the ageing midbrain and cortex is part of ongoing research
into the so-called cocktail party problem, or the brain’s ability to focus on and process a particular stream of speech in the middle of a noisy environment.” Study co-author Jonathan Simon said: “The older brain just drops part of the speech signal, even if the ears captured it all just fine. “When someone can see you speaking, instead of only hearing you, their visual system can sometimes make up for that loss.” Holding conversations in a quiet environment helps as well. The report concluded: “Because many older people have normal hearing, talking louder does not help. So if someone is having trouble understanding you in a noisy restaurant or in a crowded room, it is most important to speak clearly at a normal or slightly slower than “Your older loved ones will appreciate this.”

Fans line out to pay tribute to rugby legend TRIBUTES have been flowing for Munster and Ireland rugby legend Anthony Foley who died suddenly in Paris at the weekend. Books of condolence have opened across Kerry and Munster. A book of condolence for the late Anthony Foley was opened by Kerry County Council on Monday, with all seven local authorities doing so. The book is available for signing by members of the public at the reception of County Buildings in Rathass for the coming days during office hours. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael O’Shea, signed the book on Monday and
a book of condolence has also been opened at Killarney Municipal District Offices (Killarney Town Hall). A French coroner said on Tuesday that the 42-year-old died due to a heart condition which led to a build-up of fluid in his lungs. The funeral Mass will take place at 12 midday today, Friday, at St Flannan’s Church, Killaloe, Co Clare, with the church ceremony reserved for family and friends only. The burial afterwards will be at Reilig Núa Cemetery, Killaloe. Family flowers only.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD UNDERSTANDING OUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE The light from Andromeda left on its way to earth over 2.5 million years ago, well before modern man had evolved, says Trevor O’Donoghue LAST week scientists announced that the number of galaxies in the universe had been underestimated by as much as a factor of 20. Major news, but not something that really affects our daily lives. The discovery does, however, illustrate the vast scale of our universe. Thankfully, we as humans have developed the brain capacity, the intelligence and the curiosity to help us understand our place within it. Take for example the speed of light. It travels at 300,000 km per second. Pretty much instantaneous for us on earth, but really noticeable in the realm of the galaxies, stars and planets. Light from the moon takes little over a second to reach us, whilst light from the sun takes over eight minutes. That means that the light from the sun that is hitting your eyeball is over eight minutes old. And once we get out as far as the planet Saturn. Light and communications signals take approximately 80 minutes to get here. Not ideal for a quick two-way telephone conversation. The North Star, Polaris, which has been used for navigation for millennia, is over 430 light years away. If you look at that star tonight, the light you see started on its journey in 1583. What about the furthest star you can
see with your naked eye. That particular honour falls to a star in the constellation of Cassiopeia with the name v762; and light from that star is over 16,000 light years old when it reaches us. It left when our ancestors were daubing pictures of bison and horses onto the walls of caves in northern France, before there was writing and before any modern history. But the honour for the furthest object visible to the naked eye falls to the Andromeda galaxy. Visible to us as a large faint smudge in the night sky, the light from Andromeda left on its way to earth over 2.5 million years ago, well before modern man had evolved. Grab a simple set of binoculars and get under a dark sky and you can spot light from galaxies over 75 million light years away. That light set off on its journey 75 million years ago, long before there was anything remotely human like and our ancestors the primates were just beginning to gain a foothold on the evolutionary tree. All of the evolution and development of humans from our predecessors as apes took place in the time it took that light to travel
Trump won’t commit to accept poll result REPUBLICAN Donald Trump has refused to commit to accepting the election result if he loses, in the final TV debate against Hillary Clinton. He said to moderator Chris Wallace: “I will tell you at the time.” The Las Vegas debate continued the campaign’s bitter tone, with Mr Trump calling Mrs Clinton a “nasty woman”. Polls show Mr Trump is losing in key battleground states after facing a slew of sexual assault allegations. The final battle of wits came less than three weeks before election day on November 8. The candidates declined to shake hands before and after the political sparring. Mr Trump appealed to the Republican establishment by vowing to appoint Supreme Court justices with a “conservative bent” who would overturn a key ruling that made abortion legal in the US and protect gun rights. Meanwhile, Mrs Clinton firmly declared she would stand up for the LGBT community, defend abortion rights, focus on restoring the middle class and equal pay for women.

Need for more funding for healthcare and local improvement schemes
Cronin's Restaurant, with Tim Regan's souvenir store and the Reeks grocery store on either side, in the 1970s.
AS PART of my budget speech and where the government have promised an extra €500 million to be allocated to the Department of Health, I said I do not want this money to be consumed by the HSE. I asked that more money be given to provide extra home help hours to assist elderly people who want to remain in their homes for as long as possible. I asked that money be allocated to open the closed ward in University Hospital Kerry to curb the trolley crises. I also asked that the new mental health facility, Deer Lodge, in St Margaret’s Road, Killarney, be opened and staffed and that the closed wards in Kenmare and Dingle community hospitals be opened. I also highlighted my disappointment that the Macroom Bypass Programme has been bypassed again as it is vital that we get this programme under way to attract investment into Kerry and for all those travelling from Kerry to Cork for employment and for access to primary healthcare. I am also very disappointed that no funding has been provided for local improvement schemes. Danny Healy-Rae, Independent TD, Kilgarvan

Macroom Bypass ignored once again OVER the past week we saw the continued neglect of the South West region in the budget, despite continuing promises before election time, once again Kerry has been ignored when it comes to road funding. Once again Kerry has been side-lined and neglected when it comes to roads capital infrastructure, the Macroom bypass is of critical importance to the county and despite having the support of both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil TDs in the county, their influence has been negligible once again, so much for new politics, it seems its the same old politics and broken promises. Garden Magic KEEP YOUR GARDEN LOOKING HAPPY
October is a month of harvest and preparation, says Debby Looney
THE best gardens, in my opinion, are those planted over a period of years. A mistake which many of us make is buying and planting our entire garden in one weekend. It then happens that it looks fantastic for one month of the year, and if you want colour later you are stuck with bedding plants. Be patient, and plant with the seasons! I would recommend conifers and heathers at this time of year. There are so many dwarf conifers available at the moment, Thuja Golden Tuffet and Juniperus blue Star are two that immediately spring to mind. If you interplant with colourful heathers you will have a beautiful display all year round. Now is the time to set all your bulbs. Tulips can be planted in the ground, but do particularly well in pots, especially if you
have wet ground. Crocus, grape hyacinth and snowdrops can be naturalised in your lawn, or under trees. There is nothing more uplifting in February than to see bulbs emerging! In the vegetable garden, you should harvest any pumpkins and squashes you have now, as they will turn to mush in the first frosts. Now is also the time to divide rhubarb crowns. It is easy to do, just take a sharp spade, split the crown and replant the healthiest parts. Any autumn raspberries should also be picked, before the birds do it for you!
Thuja golden tuffet.

Electrical and automation engineer Kevin O’Connell gives an insight into advances in heating system controls
WITH winter on the horizon and the mornings and evenings gradually becoming ever more chilly, it might be time to start thinking about our heating systems and more specifically how we control our heating systems. Heating controls have advanced significantly over the last number of years with the introduction of smart controllers. One such smart controller is the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat. The Nest Learning Thermostat automatically adapts to your lifestyle and the ever-changing seasons. The Nest smart thermostat can be used to control room temperature via Nest’s heat link and the units on board, aesthetically pleasing digital display or the use of a dedicated app on a mobile phone, tablet or laptop using Wi-Fi. The device can also be used to control domestic hot water heating, via a hot water schedule, it can be programmed to
Inspect A Gadget Feel the heat boost the heat so that the user has extra hot water if and when required. Once fully operational for a week the device programmes itself to the user’s needs. Also when you are away from the home for a few days you don't have to remember to turn off the hot water immersion as the Nest Thermostat will automatically do it for you, so gone are the days of fretting about leaving the immersion on when out and about! The Nest Thermostat can also be used to monitor heating energy usage by the day, week or month, this feature allows the user to see when peak usage is and how to go about consuming less. The Nest Thermostat has a nice feature called “Farsight” whereby it lights up automatically to display the set room temperature, weather or time when it detects someone within the room. The Nest Learning Thermostat should be installed by a competent electrical professional and retails at €249.

MERCEDES-BENZ is making a big play for a slice of the electric vehicle (EV) pie, but concedes it’s a risky strategy. Despite the hype surrounding EVs, they presently account for a miniscule slice of the global new car pie and widespread public take-up could be slow. The most ambitious forecasts by luxury brands like Mercedes and Audi predict that between 15 and 25 per cent of their sales will be EVs by 2025. VW, Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, BMW and Audi are also investing heavily in EVs, despite agreement that petrol and diesel engines have many years ahead of them. Mercedes-Benz’s global chief of marketing and sales, Ola Källenius, said the time was right. “We believe that the market is gradually going towards more and more zero-emission and battery-electric formats. So yes, it’s a very big bet for us, but a bet we think is going to pay out. We focus on developing the Mercedes brand and in this case the sub-brand EQ to a leading brand for battery-electric vehicles, and with this first vehicle we’re hitting a sweet spot of the market with SUVs, with an attractive vehicle with up to 500km range,” he said. “We already have the biggest battery plant in Germany and we’re investing another €500 million into that operation over the next few years. So to have that know-how in-house and having that production capability is very important to us.” With more and more car companies shifting R&D spending away from internal combustion engines and towards electrification, expect a wide variety of electric vehicle types to hit the market as car-makers attempt to anticipate trends and get a leg-up on their competitors. But until a car company develops an affordable EV with a long driving range and short charging time, EVs will remain a gamble for both car-makers and buyers.

RADICAL real-world fuel consumption tests will force car-makers to completely rethink their engine downsizing culture, says a new report. According to Reuters, new fuel consumption tests — introduced in part as a knee-jerk reaction to Volkswagen’s Dieselgate emissions crisis — no longer favour the small-capacity turbocharged three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesels many car-makers have developed. Reuters says the problem is that where the small engines performed excellently in the old laboratory tests, the new real-world tests uncover higher levels of both CO2 and NOx because of increased use of the turbo. Other issues highlighted by the new tests are small engines overheat during evaluation. This then sees the engine’s ECU trigger the cooling system or a program of over-fuelling the engine, resulting in more fuel being used and unburnt hydrocarbons and particulates exiting the exhaust, increasing emissions further. Some car-makers like GMs’ Opel, have already reacted by phasing out its 1.2-litre diesel for a bigger 1.5-litre that will be introduced in 2019. Volkswagen is in the process of replacing its downsized 1.4-litre three-cylinder diesels with larger 1.6-litre four-cylinder engines. Renault too, is claimed to already be working on a larger-capacity entry-level diesel. Renault said that car-makers were “reaching the limits of downsizing”. “The techniques used to reduce engine capacities will no longer allow car makers to meet emissions standards,” In future all diesel engines below 1.5 litres and all petrol engines smaller than 1.2 litre will be rendered obsolete, according to the report. Head of R&D at Mercedes-Benz, reported that the disadvantages of downsizing, in the real world, have been long known. According to industry experts, further downsizing is expected to be abandoned in the future and replaced by increased hybridisation.

Women fuelling classic car sales WOMEN are fuelling a mini-boom in classic car sales as they seek a better return on their money, as well as a fun drive. Once the preserve of middle-aged men and enthusiastic petrolheads, the classic car market is now attracting younger, financially savvy women. New research by classic car insurance broker Footman James shows that over the past two years, the number of female classic car owners has risen by 40%, with female customers now accounting for 11% of the UK market - and women are also better than men at spotting models that will appreciate in value. The top classic car marques owned by women are Morris, Volkswagen, MG, Mazda and Land Rover, while the five cars that increased most in 2015 were the Fiat Dino (up 113%), Lamborghini Miura (62%), Peugeot 205 (44%), Land Rover Defender (43%) and Volkswagen Golf Mk1 GTi (43%). Women correctly identified the Lamborghini and the Defender, men only the Lambo. According to the Knight Frank Luxury Index report, classic car values have soared by 161% over five years and by 467% over 10 years. They also enjoyed a 17% surge in the
year to March, against an average rise in the value of luxury goods of five per cent – ahead of wine (nine per cent), rare coins (six per cent), watches and jewellery (four per cent each), and even diamonds (one per cent).
A 1957 Ferrari 335 S Scaglietti sold for a record €32.1 million in Paris this year. But everyday classics are a less risky investment – from Mark 1 Golf GTis to MGB Roadsters, Land Rover Defenders, VW Camper vans, or Italian cars built in the 1970s (as long as they’re in good condition).
Don’t rely on any increase in value to fund your pension but buy well and you won’t lose. Get expert advice, ask questions, monitor the market and remember that maintenance costs will eat into your profits. 22.07.16 Killarney Advertiser 21.10.16

PETS/ANIMALS ANIMALS HUG: Homes for Unwanted
Greyhounds (CHY 19414), formerly Kerry Greyhound Connection, takes in, rehabilitates and finds homes for unwanted racing greyhounds. We are looking for people to help us by offering a foster home for a greyhound as a ‘half-way-home’ until we can find a permanent home for the dog. Fostering is a really valuable and ‘hands on’ way to be involved in greyhound rescue work. There is no cost to fosterers as HUG will cover all food and veterinary expenses. Kerry under-15 hurlers celebrate Munster success KERRY’S under-15 hurlers will celebrate their success in winning the Munster Shield competition this evening, October 21, with a medal presentation in the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee. Winning the Munster Shield Competition in Clarecastle on August 27 was a significant achievement for this team and represents another step forward in the right direction. This panel has really put in serious commitment throughout the year and fully deserve this success. The year began for this squad back in early November 2015 with indoor strength and conditioning sessions in John Mitchels GAA Hall under the expert guidance of Damien Ryall. A great win in February gave them an encouraging start to the season on their first outing, a challenge again against Limerick in Rathkeale. Then, on March 19 they competed very well in the Gary Scollard Tournament in Tralee IT College and were very

unlucky to lose the final to Cork. Kerry also competed in the Cork Premier 1 U-15 League this year and overall played six games against the best clubs in Cork. “This was really a great experience overall and it greatly assisted us in our preparations for our Inter-County Tournament in August. In fact, we had fantastic victories over Midleton, Glen Rovers, St Finbarr’s and Cobh, losing only by small margins to Sarsfields
and Douglas,” said spokesman John Lenihan. He added: “On May 22, with our Kerry senior hurlers playing Offaly in Tullamore in the Leinster Championship, we took the opportunity to play Offaly’s U-15 team and had a great win in a very competitive match. “We also had a successful trip to Newtownshandrum for another challenge game and were delighted to beat the home team on their own sod.” 21.10.16 Killarney Advertiser

9TH ANNIVERSARY JOHN COURTNEY
Don’t think of him as gone away his journey’s just begun. Life holds so many facets this earth is only one.
“Memories” Just think of him as resting from the sorrows and the tears. In a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years. Think how he must be wishing that we could know today. How nothing but our sadness can really pass away. And think of him as living In the hearts of those he touched, For nothing loved is ever lost And he was loved so much.
In loving memory of Paddy Slattery, “Merrywood”, Woodlawn, Killarney, who died on the 23rd October, 2013. Though your smile is gone forever, and your hand we cannot touch, Still we have so many memories, of the one we loved so much, Your memory is our keepsake, with which we’ll never part, God has you in his keeping, we have you in our hearts. Loved and always remembered by your son Brendan, daughter-in-law Maria and Helenor.
In loving memory of a dear Father and Husband late of Curragh, Aghadoe, Killarney who died on the 19th of October 2007. A little corner of our hearts, is set aside for you. As long as life and memory last, we will always remember you. From your wife and family at home and abroad.
“For Mam”
No matter how life changes, No matter what we do, A special place within our hearts, Is always kept for you.
“Remember me, when I am gone away, Gone far away in to the silent land, When you can no more hold me, by the hand, Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay, Remember me, when no more, day by day, You tell me of our future that you planned, Only remember me, you understand, It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while, And afterwards remember, do not grieve, For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile, Than that you should remember and be sad.”
Rest In Peace.
Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
Loved and missed by his wife Mary, his sons Sylvester and Joe, his daughters Noreen, Mary T, Eileen, his daughters in law, son in law and 11 grandchildren.

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication. E.C.

INNING a county championship has never looked so easy. That’s not to say their path was terribly kind, or that in Kenmare District they faced unworthy opponents in the final. But such is their collective talent, and so strong is their will to succeed, the Crokes are simply a cut above the rest in Kerry at the moment. There has been an air of inevitability about their return to the throne all season and when Kieran O’Leary’s strike hit the back of the net with twenty-six minutes on the clock last Sunday, the ascension was all but complete. While it’s probably unfair to say
that Crokes didn’t get out of second gear, they definitely didn’t get into fifth. An unremarkable opening period was lit up by O’Leary’s superb solo effort and although the Killarney side only led by four at the break, Kenmare rarely threatened from open play and the result was never in doubt. Johnny Buckley’s early second half goal was cancelled out emphatically by Teddy Doyle but any hopes of a Kenmare fightback were short-lived, Gooch and Brian Looney in particular stepping up to the plate as they rattled off five unanswered points. The game petered out in the final quarter and Pat
O’Shea’s charges comfortably held on for their fifth County Championship in seven years. Perhaps maintaining the level of consistent performance they showed during that four-in-a-row simply isn’t possible in Kerry’s elite competition but watching them last weekend it’s difficult to explain the failures of 2014 and 2015. Shane Murphy has undoubtedly been a great addition between the sticks. Arguably the best striker of a ball in the county, Murphy is coolness personified and his presence undoubtedly breeds confidence throughout his defence. In front of him, John Payne and Michael Moloney were at their wily best against Kenmare District. The two of them grew up together just outside Fitzgerald Stadium on Dalton’s Avenue and they both fit the bill of the archetypal Crokes back. They, along with Fionn Fitzgerald, Buddy O’Leary and Gavin White nullified the opposition’s potentially lethal attack. Around the middle, enforcers like Alan O’Sullivan, Eoin Brosnan, Ambrose O’Donovan, Johnny Buckley
and Daithí Casey have had more spectacular games but they still made their presence felt, while up front the evergreen triumvirate of Gooch, Looney and Leary remain as clinical as ever, accounting for 1-12 between them. Gavin O’Shea has vindicated his manager’s decision to play him at centre forward as he again gave a good account of himself on Sunday, operating as a kind of “pass first” point guard and linking the play well. But perhaps the clearest indication of Crokes’ strength is sitting on their bench. Micheál Burns, Jordan Kiely, Tony Brosnan, Jamie Doolan, Chris Brady… The majority of clubs in Kerry would gladly make any one of these young forwards the centrepiece of their attack, but none of them were deemed worthy of a starting place in the County Final. Burns came on at half time and looked lively, but by the time Kiely was introduced the game was won. Brosnan was Crokes’ top scorer in in their run to the final. He came on in the 59th minute. Tougher tests await the Crokes if they’re to reach their ultimate goal of winning an All-Ireland but they’re back at the summit of Kerry football now and it appears as though they have all the tools to stay there.

DR CROKES ARE CHAMPIONS OF KERRY Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on the Kerry Senior Football Championship final DR CROKES are back as kingpins of Kerry after defeating Kenmare District 2-16 to 1-12 in a very entertaining Kerry SFC final played at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. Crokes will not be flattered by a seven-point winning margin, as they were on cruise control from early in the second half. The first half was very competitive which saw Crokes go in at half time leading 1-7 to 0-6. Second half scoring mainly by excellent play from man-of-the-match Colm Cooper and the excellent Brian Looney meant that the Killarney side had a comfortable cushion in that second period. IN THE ZONE Dr Crokes were in the zone for this game and from the start this was obvious. Pat O’Shea got the match-ups bang on target. The main scoring threats in Kenmare’s great run to the final came from Paul O’Connor, Killian Spillane and Stephen O’Brien so these were man marked by John Payne, Michael Moloney and Fionn Fitzgerald. This trio did wonderful jobs in marking out the Kenmare trio tackling hard but fair. Michael Moloney has had a great season doing splendid defensive jobs on Tommy Walsh, Paul Geaney and Killian Spillane. After an indifferent two seasons Smiler was back to his best and this was crucial. Likewise with Payno and Fionn Fitzgerald. Tadhg Morley and
Peter O’Shea could never come to grips with Ambrose O’Donovan, and the inter changing other Croke midfielders of Johnny Buckley and Daithí Casey, who provided plenty of good possession for the receptive Crokes forward division. Once again Colm Cooper excelled. I met a Louth GAA man who made the long journey from Drogheda for this final, even though he has no connection with the Croke club. I was amazed that he should come that distance for a Kerry final and his immediate answer was “It was worth coming alone to see Gooch in action. Seven points in all, four from play and a further three from frees. He made it all look so easy and he seemed to have all the time in the world and the space to work in that it was worth every bit of the long journey to see such a maestro orchestrating the Croke offensive sorties. That man is a genius on the ball. We don’t have anyone like that in Louth football.” Not far behind him for kudos was wing forward Brian Looney who really cut loose in the second half, scoring four points from play. One other significant factor in this win was starting Eoin Brosnan at the expense of Tony Brosnan. The 36 year old was nominally at corner forward, but all of his invaluable work was done in defence, where his athleticism and determination proved invaluable to shoring up an already tight defence.
LOSS OF PATRICK CLIFFORD Kenmare were unfortunate to lose the influential Patrick Clifford with a suspected broken collarbone, but Adrian Spillane did play even though he was very doubtful after damaging a hamstring in the semi-final win over Rathmore. Conditions were quite difficult with the heavy rains of Saturday night and Sunday morning and referee Brendan Griffin contributed greatly to the enjoyment of the game with judicious use of the whistle. He let play run on and this must have been appreciated by the attendance of 6,713 spectators. He had a fine game in this his first county final. Kenmare were very dependent on Paul O Connor from frees. He scored seven in all and a further point from play. O’LEARY’S GOAL Kieran O’Leary’s first-half goal proved crucial. It started with Fionn Fitzgerald who intercepted, made great strides upfield before parting to O’Leary. He weaved his way through and gave Kieran Fitzgibbon no chance in the Kenmare goal. O’Leary had a great game and never spilled even a single ball throughout the game, a fine achievement when one considers the slippery conditions. Fionn Fitzgerald also played a blinder with timely interceptions driving forward turning defence in to attack. Crokes were full value for their 1-7 to 0-6 first half lead. Kenmare came with

a spurt in the first minute of the restart with an Adrian Spillane point. Would there be a clawback by Kenmare? No way as Brian Looney in particular scored 4 magnificent points. One must not underestimate the key role played by Crokes’ goalkeeper Shane Murphy, particularly his kickouts. He invariable picked out a well-positioned Croke player to set up an attack and scored his trademark 45 for a valuable score. A Johnny Buckley goal put Crokes in the driving seat even if Teddy Doyle raised a green flag for Kenmare with a splendid shot. Crokes responded with Looney points and Pat O’Shea was able to empty his bench in the final 12 minutes. TREAD SOFTLY A great win for Crokes which was celebrated with a parade through the town on Sunday night led by Mike Milner, piper player (music and football) with bodhrán accompaniment from TJ O’Sullivan. The lorry taking the victorious champions through the streets of the town had so many juveniles on board. The more the merrier. That is where tradition is built. They played the games of their lives on that parade. Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams. SCORERS Dr Crokes: C Cooper (0-7, 0-3 frees); B Looney (0-4); K O’Leary (1-1); J Buckley (1-0); J Kiely, M Burns, S Murphy (0-1 ’45); A O’Donovan (0-1). Killarney RFC
MINIS: Killarney RFC Minis held a very successful registration day at Aghadoe during the minis training session Saturday morning. As an added treat, buns, croissants and baked goodies were given out along with teas and coffees in the clubhouse. The baked goods, from Petite Delice in Killarney, went down very well with all parents and kids! The minis continue to train at Aghadoe every Saturday morning between 10:30am and 12 midday and our first blitz takes place on Saturday the 29th in Listowel. Details to follow.
YOUTHS: U14S: Our u14s travelled to O’Dowd Park in Tralee in the league. Another fantastic result for our U14s as they demolished the home side on a scoreline of 37 points to nil, with tries coming from Padraic Talbot, Liam Randles, Tomas Clifford, Peter Walsh and Bailey O’Sullivan. Conversions were slotted home by budding outhalf Donncha Greally. Coaches John O’Connell, Seamus Greally, Eoin Seery and Paul O’Sullivan are doing sterling work with the lads and next up it’s a visit from Abbeyfeale at home next Saturday. U16S: Killarney RFC Under 16s hosted Charleville, on Saturday 15th October. With several players returning to the squad, the team was much more balanced for this game and the players knew only too well the task facing them. As seems to be customary Killarney leaked an early & debatable try which, Charleville converted. Krystian Komosa, pounced on a loose ball - not dealt with by Charleville, from a missed penalty kick, to score a try which was unconverted. Almost immediately from the restart, Komosa scored again by barging through three defenders out wide, to touch down, converted by Cian Murphy. Komosa scored his third of the day, again out wide, half way through the second half, converted by Christopher Carey. With about three minutes remaining Killarney were awarded a penalty on the `22, which was kicked through the posts, just to ensure the much sought after win. Final score 227. Well done to the entire team lead by Richard Wallace, and well done to the younger boys who are really stepping up to the mark. U18S: Our u18s travelled to Charleville in the league and had a tough day at the office, losing on a scoreline of 22 points to 7. Next weekend they host Kanturk at Aghadoe. SENIORS: This weekend the seniors host Fethard and District in the first home game of the Munster Junior League, Div 3. So, let’s get out and support our local rugby team as they do battle on Sunday. Kick off is 2:30pm and all are welcome to come along to Aghadoe for the match! ANTHONY FOLEY: It was with utter sadness that we learned of the death of Munster Head Coach and legendary no. 8, Anthony (Axel) Foley. The word ‘legend’ is often bandied about when describing sports-people, however in rugby terms and particularly in Munster Rugby circles Axel was a true rugby legend. For those of us lucky enough to follow Munster over the years, nothing comes close to the occasion at the millennium Stadium in Cardiff, when Foley captained Munster to their first ever Heineken Cup win. He will remain forever in our hearts for this alone. Add to this his 202 caps with Munster and 62 caps with Ireland, he was a true rugby stalwart. An excellent coach, Axel will be missed by all involved in Munster Rugby and Killarney RFC would like to offer our condolences to his wife, two sons, family and wide circle of friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a h-anam Dilis.

RESULTS: DENNY PREMIER A Killarney Athletic 1-3 Tralee Dynamos DENNY DIVISION 1B WINDMILL UNITED 2-1 KILLARNEY ATHLETIC B Athletic went down by the odd goal in Blustery Tralee today with the goal coming from winger Dave Long. Best for athletic were Aaron Quill, Conor Healy and Dan o Sullivan. A great 2nd half performance but couldn’t find that second goal to take a share of the points. U18 LEAGUE DINGLE BAY 2-3 KILLARNEY ATHLETIC. Goals came fast from Luke o Donoghue who put in a free kick that evaded everyone and slipped through the keepers legs. This was quickly followed by John Hannigan scoring his 2nd goal in 2 games to give athletic a 2-0 lead. Athletic got complacent and left Dingle back into the game to leave it tied 2-2 at half time. Great team performance with a man of the match performance from Robbie O’Donoghue. Others who stood out were Luke, David O’Mahony and Dylan Fitzgerald. Well done boys. U16 BALLYHAR 0-4 KILLARNEY ATHLETIC Athletic started the game at full speed and Ballyhar were unable to match the intensity of the game. 2 quick fire goals for Harry Potts and Caolan Ryan
Local clubs weekly round-up | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm
gave athletic the lead at half time but Ballyhar and their talisman Dylan O Callaghan didn’t give up. Harry Potts added to the score line twice in the second half to come away with a hat trick. A great team performance from everyone. U14 DINGLE BAY ROVER 0-1 KILLARNEY ATHLETIC Athletic scored midway through the first half through Aaron O’Sullivan. Into the second half & Dingle piled on the pressure, but good defending from the Jack Lynch, Donnachadh Warren, Jaime Aliadare & man of the match, Patrick Komosa, kept Dingle at bay. When Dingle did get through they found firstly Darragh Doolan & then Keelan Foley in fine form, and it was Foley’s excellent passing out from the back that relieved a lot of the pressure on the back four in the second half. A lot of running & hard work done by the two Rian’s, O’Brien & Gill meant Athletic always had a reliable out ball. In what was a great team performance the lads kept their heads & won the game the right way & with a number of key players to come back in the team can build on this result. Rugby news and views with Liam Murphy
The MEK United under-13 team.
The Killarney Rugby Club under-16s.
LAST Sunday was a pretty surreal day to say the least. As town prepared for the County Final, excitement was building for rugby fans for an even bigger match, over in Paris. Munster were in Colombes, to take on Ronan O'Gara's Racing 92 in the first round of this year's European Cup. Having watched Connacht beat Toulouse the night before, hopes were up for a Munster win. However a text message from my sister jolted me back to reality as she broke the news: "Anthony Foley has died!" Words you never, ever expect or should ever have to read. As social media exploded and Munster Rugby confirmed that the Munster legend had passed, a complete feeling of utter sadness descended. Anthony 'Axel' Foley, head coach with Munster was Munster Rugby personified. Those of us lucky enough to travel to the Millennium Stadium Cardiff ten years ago in ‘06 to watch Munster win their first 'Heineken Cup' will always remember the sheer joy felt when Axel lifted the trophy to finally crown Munster champions of Europe, after final losses in 2000 and 2002. He retired from playing in 2008, as Munster won their second Heineken Cup, having been capped 202 times for Munster. He was also capped 62 times for Ireland, winning the Triple Crown in 2004. But much more than international caps and cups won, Anthony Foley was a Munster man who loved his club, Shannon RFC and province. He was a family man, married to Olive and father of two boys. The loss of this rugby great has hit a note with people across the globe. Former and current rugby players, politicians and fans took to social media to express their heartbreak. For me, to hear 'The Fields of Athenry' sung outside Racing 92's stadium was sincerely heartbreaking. Having heard the Red Army sing this to encourage our men in battle or to celebrate a win was always something to behold. But to hear it sung to acknowledge the death of Munster's head coach was something I will never, ever forget. RIP Anthony Foley. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dílis.

SENIOR COUNTY FINAL 2016 DR. CROKES 2-16 KENMARE DISTRICT 1-12 This was a game of pure football by both teams. Our ability to take our scores more easily and our strong bench enabled us to win in the end by seven points. This was a great team display by all our players as well as our strong bench contributing to this great win. I don’t think anyone at the game would disagree with Colm Cooper’s selection as man of the match. We also salute our manager Pat O’Shea and his selectors Harry O’Neill, Eddie O’Sullivan, Niall O’Callaghan and Mike Buckley. We must also thank our two men doing the logistics – Matthew Courtney and Seamus O’Doherty and our medical man Brian O’Callaghan.

MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL Mid Kerry take on East Kerry in Fitzgerald Stadium at 1.30pm on Sunday 23rd October (replay in the event of draw). U15 SUPER TOUCH PJ Reidy GDA for Mid Kerry organised a very successful u15 Super Touch blitz in Beaufort on Saturday. Every club in Mid Kerry took part and the competition was played on a round robin basis with each team playing 4 games. After some very close exciting football it all came down to the final game where Milltown/ Castlemaine faced Glenbeigh/Glencar/ Cromane. Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane needed to win because while they hhad beaten Laune Rangers and Keel/ Listry they were beaten by Beaufort, but a draw would have been enough for Milltown/Castlemaine who had won all of their games. After a tight first half with defences on top Glenbeigh/Glencar/ Cromane lead 0-03 to 0-02 at halftime. An excellent second half saw the teams level on three occasions and in an exciting finish Milltown/Castlemaine held on to win by 0-08 to 0-07 with Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane attacking at the final whistle. Great credit is due to the mentors of both teams for
