Traffic Crisis Chamber Statement Letter

Chamber Slams Council Over “Unacceptable” Delays Words: Adam Moynihan

V

In a surprise move, the businessmen and women of Killarney have penned a hard-hitting letter to voice their dismay at the council’s handling of the town’s lingering traffic crisis. The Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, which represents 200 local businesses, say that delays in implementing a proper traffic management system are “unacceptable”, while also expressing fears that Killarney’s brand will be damaged if the local authority doesn’t take immediate action. As has been consistently highlighted in the pages of the Killarney Advertiser, heavy traffic congestion has been an issue in the town for years but the situation reached an all-time low this past summer, with many locals insisting that it was the worst they had ever seen. Those sentiments have now been echoed by the Chamber, who describe the current situation as “unprecedented”. They also state that little or no progress has been made on the short-term solutions suggested in the Killarney Traffic Management Plan, which was published in 2016. At a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, it was revealed that just four of the plan’s 33 recommendations had been officially completed to date. Speaking at that meeting, Town Engineer John Ahern said the only way of actually solving Killarney’s traffic problem was by building a new bypass. “Until that is delivered you’re always going to have congestion,” he said. “Anything we do in town in just chipping away at the edges.” During the recession, the government shelved plans for a new bypass and no movement is expected on such a development for at least 10-12 years. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Chamber President Paul O’Neill said traffic was the number one concern for Killarney’s businesses and residents. “We liaise with the Municipal District and this is the one topic that’s recurring time and again,” Mr O’Neill said. “The mooted timescale for a solution is unacceptable from our point of view. The TEIR 1 report predicted significant growth and we have to plan for that growth. Short-term measures have been outlined but nothing has actually transpired. “There needs to be action before the 2019 season. This is a huge issue and we can’t wait 10-12 years.” Some of the more significant measures outlined in the Traffic Management Plan, such as the construction of an inner relief road from the top of High Street to New Street via Bohereen na Goun (by Dunnes Stores), the redevelopment of the dangerous Lewis Road junction and the proposed Rock Road car park, still appear to be a long way off completion. Town management say they are “hopeful” that the latter will be completed in 2019.

On Traffic

Paul O’Neill, President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has real concerns about the unacceptable delay in implementing a proper and practical traffic management system in and around Killarney. We welcome recent concerns expressed by the elected members regarding the town not being adequately prepared or best positioned to cope with demand in terms of required traffic flow, parking requirements and congestion issues. Almost two years since Killarney Municipal District Council took delivery of a traffic management review, it is a significant worry that the gridlock experienced in the summer of 2018, by locals and visitors, was unprecedented. While Chamber acknowledges the efforts of the elected members and management of Killarney Municipal District Council, it would appear that progress is being hindered by the absence of a clear parking management strategy and the recommendations of the report not being implemented. Killarney Chamber, has, in its meetings with the Killarney Municipal District management, since 2015, continually highlighted the traffic management issue as the top priority for our members. This year Killarney Chamber carried out a TEIR One (Tourism Economic Impact Report), which projected a conservative 3% growth over the next decade. There is a clear and present threat that the Killarney brand will be significantly damaged if the local authority does not act, as a matter of priority, to solve the town’s traffic problems and implement the main findings of the traffic management review. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, a representative body of 200 local businesses, accepts that there is no silver bullet solution to the gridlock but there is absolutely no doubt that some proposed short to medium-term measures can be put in place to help tackle the problems being experienced. There seems to have been little or no progress on short-term remedies such as the proposed inner relief road at St Mary’s Terrace/Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Road, the development Rock Road car park or the relief road at Deerpark. Given the ordeal endured by motorists this summer, it was quite alarming to hear senior local authority officials indicate that the reality is it will be a minimum of 10 to 12 years before the gridlock in the town can be adequately tackled when – or if – an outer relief road is approved. It is quite clear that greater expediency is required, that a new parking strategy must be implemented as a matter of extreme urgency and that facilities for parking are provided as an immediate priority. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is managing growth in the tourism sector through proper forward planning and analysis and the hope now is that Killarney Municipal District Council can do likewise in terms of traffic management. Chamber is willing and able to play its part and to engage fully in the process but a firm commitment is now required on the part of Kerry County Council. The growth of the entire county of Kerry depends on Killarney, as the premier tourist destination, continuing to prosper but it will be unable to do so without adequate traffic management. This is essential in order to future proof Killarney as one of Ireland’s top visitor destinations.

A View From The Kerb I worked with a fella who, when we were challenged with a large job to complete, always made the following statement: “How do you eat an elephant? Bite by bite.” Firstly, can I ask for a change of perspective? We have a traffic problem. Let us be thankful for it, it is a sign that we are a successful and bustling little town. We must also recognise that when the town was laid out it was for horses and a much smaller population. So like people living in an old house we must be willing to adapt our lifestyle to suit the house or else be prepared to knock it down and start again. So in the spirit of my work colleague here are my few bites to the elephant of a traffic problem:

1

2

3

In today’s attitude towards healthy living would it not be good to encourage parents to drop their children a 15-minute walk away from the congestion that is at Cathedral Place. Go to a funeral any evening and that area is akin to Jones’ Road on All-Ireland Sunday.

8

I know the argument is going to be presented about bag weight, but between the combined intelligence of our school management I presume some logical solution can be achieved.

9

Travelling the Muckross Road on a regular basis, I’m going to sing the same old tune, “notice how the traffic flows faster when the Woodlawn cross and top of Ross Road traffic lights are flashing amber”. If it is possible to use this system on busy periods like race week, why not all peak times? 8am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm.

Freestyle parking around the town. Can we not mark areas that are causing regular problems with double red lines, and enforce them? How often have we heard of a large vehicle turning down Plunkett Street and not be able to turn right onto Main Street because of a vehicle parked in the yellow box.

Is it the responsibility of the gardaí or the municipal council to assist traffic flow, and address problems? Don’t think I have ever seen a uniformed person directing traffic outside the racecourse and ensuring that our racing guests get in and out of the races quickly. The loading bay in front of the Grand Hotel is for parallel parking and we continually park nose in.

5

Loading bays are for that purpose. Are they being enforced? Ask a delivery person how many rounds of the town they have to do to find a spot to carry out a delivery. Because I drive a van and working on a job all day in town, should I be more considerate? Stand at the Hahah any morning at 8.30am. 8 out of 10 cars going down the Mission Road are on a school run, and 4 out of those 8 are carrying only one student. Do we not practice carpooling?

we spend €50,000 on the next traffic 13 Before management plan, why not ask for public contributions? We have a local businessman that owns a helicopter and with a GoPro. I would contribute towards the fuel costs for him to fly around town at problem times and record it. Knowing the same man, I think he would do it for nothing. to the business people and ask them of their 14 Talk business needs and how they can help find solutions.

we asked our taxi operators to re-eval15 Isuateit time the current taxi rank. With 6 hotels located around the cinema, and lot of work going to the INEC, would somewhere around the cinema better a location for a sub rank? need to bring business into the heart of the 16 We town. God help you if you were a bus driver. Is

there any designated drop off and pick up point for tourists? Better signage for car parks - electronic systems like in the cities showing you available spaces. I know, before you say it, just put up ‘full’ all the time.

ENFORCEMENT. Do we need our authorities to be more vigilant for vehicle violations? When is the last time you saw a traffic enforcement officer dealing with a careless parking situation? My “only one minute” in the bank can lead to another’s 10 minutes outside the Friary.

4

6

7

old chestnut again but losing a car park for 17 The the funfair in the height of the season. a metering system for traffic flow at the top 18 Would of Mission Road and the Hahah be out of the question? Like the on-ramps on American highways.

19 Lastly, be part of the solution not the problem. benefits of the pedestrianisation of Plunkett 10 The Street. It reduces the amount of traffic being direct-

ed onto Main street, High Street, and the Hahah. Logically if I was leaving Daly’s on the Park Road and wanted to get to the Cathedral why would I want to drive through the centre of town? I think that’s why we have a bypass.

11

Change all pedestrian crossings from traffic lights to zebra crossings. (Cinema, Outlet Centre, Muckross Road, Lewis Road, Grotto...)

is asking when is the new carpark on 12 Everybody Rock Road going to open. Am I the only one to drive past the site on the Muckross Road behind Killarney Brewing Company, and wonder who is not talking to who and why?

That’s my view, my opinion from one side of the road. Please be kind to me in your response and I will grant you the same when you share your view from the kerb.

Surprise Closure Of St Finan’s Road Is “Mental” Words: Adam Moynihan Residents have expressed their shock at the closure of the road linking Rock Road to Lewis Road via St Finan’s Hospital, with one local describing the move as “mental”. The quiet road, which runs along the back of Fitzgerald Stadium through the grounds of the former psychiatric institution, was sometimes used by locals as a convenient shortcut during times of heavy traffic but that practice is now at an end due to new measures implemented by the Health Service Executive. As our picture shows, bollards and signs have been erected

at either end of the road, making the route inaccessible to motorists. A notice at the Lewis Road end of the grounds states that the road serves as an emergency entrance/exit to the hospital but St Finan’s, known colloquially as the “mental” hospital, has been closed since 2012. The move has been greeted with disappointment by locals, many of whom are already deeply frustrated with the town’s ongoing traffic crisis. It is certainly an untimely development considering the summer of traffic we’ve just endured. It’s more roads we need, not fewer.

Storm Ali Fights Its

Way Through Killarney It may not have reached the destructive levels of the infamous Ophelia but Storm Ali swept through Killarney this week leaving plenty of fallen branches in its wake. As our pictures show, many local roads were left partially blocked as trees were battered by the storm. One unlucky motorist who parked outside the Golden Gates near the town centre returned to find their back windscreen completely smashed by a fallen branch. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. Elsewhere, Storm Ali caused far more se-

vere destruction. A Swiss woman in Co Galway died after the caravan in which she was sleeping was blown off a cliff, while in Newry, Co Down a man in his 20s was killed after being hit by a tree. The National Ploughing Championships were shut down on Wednesday as the storm brought winds of almost 100km/h to Tullamore. The tent that was housing the Gleneagle Hotel sales and marketing team was destroyed by the strong winds but, fortunately, Seán McDermott, Catherine Casey and Jamie Palmer avoided injury and weathered the storm.

Gardaí Appeal For Information After Taxi Hit-And-Run Gardaí in Killarney are appealing for information from the public following a hit-and-run incident involving a taxi. A man was struck by a taxi as he was using the pedestrian crossing near the Plaza Hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning. The victim suffered minor injuries but it is believed that the car failed to stop and instead fled the scene.

V

TOWNTALK

The incident occurred at approximately 2am and gardaí are eager to speak to anyone who may have been in the vicinity at the time. As it was around closing time, it is believed that a number of revellers were in the area and may have seen what happened. Anyone with information is urged to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 66 71160.

Acclaimed Hollywood actress Saoirse Ronan is expected to attend the premiere of hotly anticipated movie Tradition, which will be held at Cinema Killarney in October. The Golden Globe winner is rumoured to be coming to town to support her father, Paul, who stars in the hilarious comedy centred around a controversial Gaelic football match. The film, which was produced, directed and co-written by talented local filmmaker Damien O’Callaghn, was shot entirely in Killarney and features cameos from a number of wellknown celebrities, such as Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Pat Spillane and Marty Morrissey. All will be in attendance on the night, as will renowned British director David Putnam, casting directors Ros and John Hubbard, and comedian Brendan Grace.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, director Damien O’Callaghan thanked the people of Killarney and said the project was a testament to what could be achieved when we come together as a community. “It’s great for Killarney,” he said. “We filmed around the town and we got some great footage of the area - I think the film shows Killarney in its best light. We got so much help from local people. This film wouldn’t have been possible without them.” Tradition will be screened as part of the gala opening of the Kerry Film Festival on October 17 and tickets sold out within two hours of going on sale. Locals will be hopeful that rumours of a second screening are accurate but the good news is that the film will be coming to all good cinemas in the not too distant future.

Appeals Lodged Against Additional Muckross Parking Two appeals have been lodged against the proposed plans to introduce additional car and bus parking facilities at Muckross House, the council has confirmed. In August the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht was granted permission to expand the current parking facilities. According to the Department, additional spaces were necessary to meet increased demand and also to protect trees which hang over the current overflow car park, which is locat-

ed on the grass next to the current car park. An appeal has been lodged by an environmentalist from Dublin, Peter Sweetman, on the grounds that it could adversely affect the site, which has protected status. A second appeal was also received from Michael Horgan from Tralee, who said it would affect the local deer as the site of the proposed expansion was prime grazing land. The Department says the development will not negatively impact the site or any wildlife in the area.

Now Back To Brass Tax

The Brehon’s Incredible Virtual Reality Headsets

The Property Tax, the LPT, is to be voted on next Monday. It is strange that property tax cannot be ringfenced for property. I hope the nonsense that went on last year, where the 5 per cent increase was ringfenced, by council on a proposal for management, for two of the county’s biggest global businesses, Fexco and Dairymaster, will not be repeated. €600,000 is for training and research for these companies, in conjunction with IT Tralee, as far as I understand. There is a Government education department which grant aids R&D, and third level colleges, there are whole business and enterprise agencies and departments dishing out money - there are other sources for this money for these companies worth millions of euro. Yes we are very, very grateful to Dairymaster and to Fexco, and we doff our caps to them and bow and scrape like we did to the landlords of old in order to survive and so they won’t turn their backs on us. But, let’s face it, these are not non-profit organisations and are doing very, very well operating out of Kerry with its low private sector wage economy. Why should Kerry County Council subvent them? Time the council lost its notions and got back to basics – housing, and roads, and fixing the burst pipes, methinks. I still think Cllr Brendan Cronin’s opposition to it was one of the most memorable ever: the council were “going into high altitude and forgetting the stuff low down,” he said – asking them to cut the hedges and fix the potholes and provide car parking in Killarney. By the way, it was Fine Gael who pushed the thing through - they even wanted a 10 per cent increase!

We were very excited to invite the team from The Brehon into The Chatroom today to talk all about their new Virtual Reality headsets! Sharon O’Keeffe, Gleneagle Group Brand Manager, Sharon Devine, The Brehon Weddings Sales Manager, and Catriona Ashe, The Brehon’s Wedding Coordinator explained to the clearly excited Kieran Healy of the Killarney Advertiser what the virtual reality headset will allow clients to see and the benefits of having such technology available in The Brehon. When Kieran put on the headset he was blown away by the four-and-a-half minute virtual reality tour of how The Brehon will look on your wedding day. From the welcome you will receive from staff, to how the wedding function room will look, even the different layouts of the room that are possible, to the magnificent Honeymoon suite, the entire video is actually like walking through The Brehon on your wedding day. To say it blew Kieran’s mind would be an understatement. You can watch this latest episode of The Chatroom tonight at 9pm on our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie on our Facebook page.

Views On The News

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

The Wagons Have Circled Around The President The wagons have circled around the current president and his office and any hope of finding out how much is spent on Presidential visits and entertainment and clothes is quashed. Weeks ago, this column pointed out the presidential spend seemed to be the only area in which Michael D and his wife Sabina might, and I stress might, be holed under the water in a campaign that had failed to ignite. Media queries were raised, and the Dáil public accounts committee itself, led by chairman Seán Fleming TD looked for an investigation into the near €50m total spend in the presidential office since 2011. But there has been a very defensive response. The Department of the Taoiseach secretary general has now said such an examination may be “unconstitutional”, politically motivated and could damage the credibility of the presidential election campaign next month and so cannot be allowed. He seems to be threatening the might of the attorney general in the issue – legal action, in other words. There is a huge problem with public information in this country. The hiding of the presidential purse is but the latest. I have a number of examples immediately to hand. Earlier this week Cllr Brendan Cronin finally got a report from Kerry County Council on how much is paid out for claims and this comes in at just under €3 million. This was the second time the councillor had to put down the question. It was quite obvious in July what he was looking for, but the question wasn’t precise so it was “out the gap” for the council with a general reply and no figures in July. There is still no detail on how much of the payout was for potholes, for instance. Previous information has told us Tralee leads the way in the trips and falls claims in footpaths and in local authority housing areas. We still do not have this detail. But we are told there has been an improvement in the footpaths in urban areas… That’s the council. Now health. Around August 16 I submitted a question regarding cataract and hip operations being carried out in Belfast. Michael Healy-Rae had publicised the next bus to Belfast was to leave in October. I wanted to know how many people

from Cork and Kerry were having to go outside the State for procedures, especially given the state of University Hospital Kerry. The figures would be available because they are entitled to reimbursements from the HSE. It was a simple question. Michael would need to put down a Dáil question on the matter and the Dáil would not be back until September, so I said I would get the figures myself well before that. So I put the queries in to two communications units – the ones who deal with the hospitals in Cork and Kerry (which is, by the way a private company) and a HSE communications unit in Cork. I am still waiting for the basic numbers. I have emailed a number of times since. One tells me it’s the other’s responsibility. In the meantime, I still have no information. The latest missive is that I will have to contact the HSE – in Dublin – myself. It gets nearer home: Last Friday I asked the OPW and the NPWS how many vacant properties there were in and around the Killarney National Park owned by the State. This is in light of the new development agency announced coincidentally on foot of Cllr Bobby O’Connell’s motion on Compulsory Purchase Orders of vacant village buildings. My rough count says there are around 20 State-owned houses empty in and around the National Park, but I can’t be sure. And I can’t be sure which are derelict and which are vacant and or

habitable. I contacted both the NPWS and OPW because it is never clear, for some reason, which body owns what in the case of the Killarney National Park. To be fair, the OPW came back immediately and said not us – and they had made sure the NPWS were dealing with the query. But I am still waiting. So I contacted the council. There must be a derelict sites and vacant properties register and perhaps the Muckross properties are there? Under law, the council are obliged to keep one. Dublin’s register is online. As are other authorities. Is Kerry’s? I phone. The section confirms there is indeed a sites register, two of them, both vacant and derelict, but they are not online. The official tries to access it online herself, and fails. (The council, in fairness, have since come back to me to say they checked the derelict sites and vacant properties register and nothing from the Muckross Estate is on it...) I can go on. Except it is not just journalists and public representatives who are being stonewalled and cats cradled. I got a call last week from a lady in Woodlawn. There was a burst pipe with water flowing into a gully. She had contacted Irish Water and was told to contact the council. She did so and had to give the full details twice, by the way. The water was still flowing on Wednesday. Then it transpires someone else had contacted the authorities the previous Wednesday. The

same rigmarole. It was Thursday before the pipe was fixed and a stop put to the wastage of the expensively treated water, scarce all summer. That’s a week and a day after the initial report to two bodies, by at least two people with a sense of civic duty, and a multiplicity of checking. To fix a pipe! To save water! We have a multiplicity of State and semi-state organisations being terribly inefficient, it seems. Back to the presidential. No questions will be brokered on the president’s spend. But it seems that some presidential hopefuls asking questions are not to be tolerated either. I was heartened to witness the courageous move by Tralee solicitor Cllr Pa Daly in putting Gemma O’Doherty’s name forward for nomination at Kerry County Council. Gemma is being lambasted from all quarters for asking tough questions. It upsets families! There is no shred of evidence! Some of this stuff is coming from high profile journalists. The reality is the questions Gemma raises about high profile cases have not been answered. It is one of the difficult sides of journalism, some questions are not nice, some reports you would prefer not to do, because they do disturb. But they need to be asked. I have been watching this and have become deeply disturbed at the aggressive tone taken against her – for pursuing one of the fundamentals of journalism. Nominating her, Cllr Daly, a very busy solicitor, who will be voting for Liadh Ní Riada, said there was a whispering campaign against Gemma O’Doherty that reminded him of the early days of the campaign against the garda whistleblowers, when gardaí were attempting to discredit the whistleblowers. I can add the gender issue is raising its head proudly, and I have seen stuff on social media that is naked, misogynistic stereotyping, and nothing but. Early on the message was sent out by powerful people: Gemma was of the difficult/mad woman kind… At least one drunken tweet had to be removed. Oh dear, oh dear. It is not the questions that Gemma is asking that make me ashamed, it is the attacks on her by some in the media for the very fact she is asking questions. Talk about shooting the messenger!

First Impressions Of Killarney Our German intern Nadine Treiber details her first trip around Killarney First we went to the National Park to the south of Killarney. You can either walk there or get a horse-drawn carriage. In the end, we decided to walk but many people choose the “jaunting car” because it’s faster. When we arrived we were greeted by the lovely Lough Leane. You can take a boat across the lake but unfortunately we didn’t have the time. Instead, we explored Ross Castle before heading back through the National Park towards town. On our way, we stopped off at Killarney House & Gardens with its colourful flowers. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. Outside the entrance, we noticed a statue of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty. Later, we visited the Friary and admired the statue of the stag opposite. We also checked out St Mary’s Church of Ireland, which is a beautiful gothic-style building. Killarney isn’t a big town but it’s so beautiful. I will be sure to recommend it to everyone back home!

Are You On A Waiting List To Have A Cataract Removed? On Friday, September 7, I organised a bus of 14 patients to go to Belfast to have their cataracts removed and on Saturday, September 8 all 14 were discharged successfully. Some of these people had already been waiting for up to two years with still no hope of being called in the south. It is a disgrace that we have to resort to such measures. It makes no sense that we carried 14 people to Belfast as the HSE cannot facilitate them in the south, yet the HSE will refund them the money. It baffles me. I will continue to bring people to Belfast for as long as I have to and with that, the next bus will be going on November 3, but it is a poor reflection on this government and more so on the Minister that this is the action required to save elderly people from going blind. I cannot commend the hospital staff in Belfast enough for their efficiency on the day we were there and everyone was dealt with swiftly and with no delay and 14 procedures were carried out from 8.30am to 1pm, which is a fantastic service. It’s a shame that we have to go to Belfast to receive this level of service. I wish to highlight a few questions people have asked me in the past few weeks: 1. Do you need health Insurance to use this service? No 2. Must I pay for this myself? Initially, yes but the HSE refund the money once you return home afterwards 3. How much does it cost? Cataract operation: £1500. Hip/knee replacement: £9,850 and the HSE reimburse this amount once you return home 4. What is involved in the trip to Belfast on the bus to have my cataract removed? Leave Kerry Saturday morning and return home on Sunday evening. 5. How long will I be waiting to be called for operation? Literally a few weeks as next Bus organised is November 3. 6. Can I travel up myself to have a cataract removed? Yes, this is also possible and can be booked direct with the hospital. 7. Is there an overnight stay involved for cataract removal? Yes. One night in a nearby hotel at your own expense. 8. How long will I be in hospital for knee/hip replacement? 3- 4 nights depending on recovery. Regards, Michael Healy-Rae TD

It’s Time To Put The Right To A Home In Our Constitution

Over the past few years, we have witnessed the power of the ballot when deciding on two important issues by referendum. First was the marriage equality referendum and most recently we had a massive ‘yes’ vote on the 8th. Perhaps now it is time to mobilise once more and put the right to a home into the Irish Constitution. The right to housing can be found in the United Nations International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), ratified by the Irish parliament in 1989. The right to housing can be explained as the right to adequate housing, which means that the State is responsible to ensure that affordable housing is available to all of its citizens, contingent on all available State resources. Significantly, this does not mean that everyone should be provided with social housing, rather it means that social housing should be available to those who need it. This obligation does not fall short at merely providing temporary shelter or emergency accommodation as we have witnessed in recent times. It should be considered, in general terms, to mean that housing should be available to the public to purchase and should be commensurate with income levels and at a level that does not compromise other basic needs. People should not have to make financial choices between paying the rent or buying food, or getting access to health care or buying books for school, and the government is responsible for managing the housing mar-

ket and to take action when necessary and vindicate the rights of its citizens. Interestingly, the Irish Government signed the ICESCR Optional Protocol in 2012 but has been hesitant when called upon to ratify this protocol. Ratification would provide Irish individuals and groups with a potential alternative legal remedy when violations of economic, social and cultural rights occur. It has also been most regrettable that the Government’s policy paper called ‘Rebuilding Ireland: Action plan for housing and homelessness (2016)’ did not specify any plan for including the right to housing in the Irish Constitution, and more or less ignored the recommendation of the Convention on the Constitution in 2014, when it decided that economic and social rights such as the right to housing merited explicit recognition in the Irish Constitution. The view of the Constitutional Convention is also supported by Leilani Farha, the UN’s Special Rapporteur for adequate housing who stated in June of this year at the launch of ‘Making a case for a Right to Housing’ by the Simon Communities that Ireland should “either constitutionalise the right to housing or, failing that, legislate the right to housing.” The housing crisis is not expected to end in the coming years. It is expected to continue by design. The crisis is underpinned by an ideology that would like to see a larger percentage of working-class people and families renting property from private and corporate

interests over the long term, instead of being provided with social and affordable housing by the state. This strategy seeks to deny lower income families the opportunity to purchase a house that they can afford and have a place of their own to call home. The private sector may eventually be successful in providing units to the market for rent, but low-income workers or even the average worker will not be able to afford to pay the rent for a family home at current market prices. Significantly, low to average income families will not be able to purchase these rental units in due course and count previous rental payments against the price of the house. This leaves these workers with little security of tenure and in a precarious housing situation and without a safety net. Overall, I would consider this ideological view as the root cause of the current homelessness and housing crisis. Next year, we will have local elections and a possible general election. If you are like me, and want to see an end to the current housing crisis, and prevent such crises from reoccurring in the future, you should demand that your local representative supports the call to include the right to adequate housing in the Irish Constitution, and together we can hold our government to account for its actions. MakerMeetIE to bring Ginormous Geodesic Dome to Rome

Adrian and Susan Bartlett, Maura Flynn (Director of Nursing), Cathal Walshe (quizmaster), Linda Bartlett Geaney, Louise Cronin, Luke Bartlett and Aoibhe Bartlett.

MakerMeetIE are a group of dedicated educators who promote S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) in education. They specialise in maker-led, project-based learning in schools throughout the country. This methodology is changing classrooms throughout the world by providing opportunities for students to learn more intuitively across a broader range of subjects. Problem solving combined with creativity is at the heart of this hands-on, collaborative learning process. MakerMeetIE aims to help teachers bring MakerSpaces into their classrooms and help students explore the fun of working and learning together. Their current project - “The Ginormous Geodesic Dome” - incorporates all aspects of S.T.E.A.M. and is an excellent example of maker-led, project-based education. They have built small and medium versions which have been exhibited at workshops, schools and festivals. Expanding on this, they applied (and have been accepted) to MakerFaire Rome (2018.makerfairerome.eu/en/) - the largest MakerFaire in Europe - to build and exhibit a 20-foot diameter version. Planning, prototyping and building the 20-foot version has begun! Kerry Politician Refuses To Apologise For “Itinerants” Comments A Kerry councillor has refused to apologise for saying that the people responsible for a spate of anti-social behaviour in Rossbeigh were “itinerants”. Cllr Michael Cahill said that a number of people were seen defecating and urinating on equipment in a children’s playground, and that he had been told by reliable sources those responsible were members of the travelling community. Cahill made the remarks while calling for a permanent beach officer to patrol the area. The Kerry Traveller Health and Community Development Project has since asked the politician to apologise for his comments, which they say are racist. In response, Cahill has doubled down on his assertions and confirmed that he has “no notion” of apologising.

As well as enjoying VIP tickets to Riverdance on Saturday evening, the program showcased a range of engaging activity options including the launch of Go Team Killarney, a bespoke teambuilding activity offered by the bureau’s newest member Orangeworks. This interactive treasure hunt around Killarney Town was tailored to incorporate Kerry Convention Bureau members, demonstrate event and accommodation infrastructure and capacities and included a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) component by enabling the participants to raise money for the bureau’s CSR partner, Kerry Parents and Friends Association (KPFA). For each challenge completed, the teams were awarded points which generated a total of €350 to be used towards purchasing items needed to furnish KPFA’s community houses. In addition to the treasure hunt and Riverdance, the action-packed itinerary included visits to a range of

5* and 4* KCB member hotel properties and venues across Killarney and Tralee, a workshop learning an Irish dance on the stage at Siamsa Tire, Ireland’s National Folk Theatre jaunting car trip through the National Park and a memorable finale of a short helicopter trip, courtesy of Killarney Racecourse which gave the participants a bird’s eye view of Killarney town and its beautiful surrounds of lakes, mountains and 26,000 acres of National Park. Start Studying In September To Reach Your Potential

Career guidance counsellor Niamh Dwyer

Over the years students have compared preparing for the state exams to training for a marathon, in which case some effective planning and a strong work ethic combine to make the perfect training schedule for students. By starting in September with a well thought-out study plan, you give yourself the best possible chance of realising your potential. Keeping the plan simple and achievable while staying focused on your exam targets will challenge you to achieve the goals you have set for yourself. The following tips will get you started: • Write down the targets you hope to achieve in each subject. You need to aim to achieve this target in as many class tests and assignments as possible during the year if you to realistically achieve it in June 2019. • Plan ahead and organise all your notes. Have a separate folder for each subject and divide them into the sections of the course. On an A4 page for each exam subject, make a list of all the topics/areas to be covered and keep this at the front of the folder. Tick off topics as you study and revise them. • Draw up a weekly study timetable and fill in your evening activities. Allow adequate time for homework on each evening and then allocate revision/ study slots of 40-45 mins in duration to each evening. On days where you have a lot of homework it may be only possible to do one revision slot. It can work very well to assign a particular subject to a

specific night, for example, geography on a Monday night, biology on a Tuesday night and so on. As the year goes on you will be increasing revision slots as homework decreases. Include all your subjects in revision slots at least once in the week, one per week day and the remainder at the weekend. Plan the sections you are going to revise at the beginning of each week and have all notes, texts, utensils at hand. Don’t forget to include breaks and fun activities! • Stock up on highlighters, post-it notes, mind-map templates, flashcards etc. to use for revision sessions.

How To Approach A Revision Session Of 40-45 Mins

Just like a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) session, you will get the maximum out of a revision session if you work hard and remain focused for 40-45 mins rather than ineffective study for longer periods. Break it up as follows: • Survey the key headings, sub-headings, keypoints, diagrams, tables, maps etc. (5 mins) • Read the important information carefully, take very brief notes if it helps but don’t overdo it. Concentrate on learning the content (20 mins) • Recall what you can by brainstorming what you can remember on a blank sheet of paper (5 mins)

• Review what you are unsure about and have a look at an exam question on the topic to see how confident you would be to attempt it (10-15 mins) It isn’t an easy task to get and stay motivated for an entire exam year but if you can start early with a good study routine it will become habit before long, and by putting in the hours with effective techniques you will cross the finishing line in June knowing you have given the exams your best shot! And couples set to celebrate their wedding at The Brehon were the first people to experience the new technology at a special coffee morning on Sunday. “Our new Virtual Reality Tour is specifically designed for people planning their wedding celebrations,” explains Weddings Sales Manager Sharon Devine. “Rather than just trying to imagine their wedding day, this tour enables couples to experience, from the perspective of the bride and groom, what The Brehon is like on a wedding day.” The immersive 3D experience takes users on an animated show-around of the hotel, from the red carpet arrival reception right through to the gourmet wedding banquet. By simply donning a headset, users will be able to view three dimensional, animated images of the hotel. “We have created this tour to help couples get a sense of how their Brehon wedding will unfold,” Sharon said. “Instead of sending you a brochure or asking you to view an image online we can now put you in the picture. We can immerse you in our beautiful surroundings and let you experience what it is like to celebrate your wedding at The Brehon. It will be particularly useful for couples planning their wedding from abroad.” The Brehon virtual reality tour travels to the Wedding Journal Show which takes place in Dublin’s Citywest Convention Centre on September 22 and 23. Couples attending the show are welcome to come along to stand D5 and give it a try. The Brehon team will also attend the Brides of Kerry Show in The Great Southern on Sunday, September 23. To celebrate their new virtual reality experience, The Brehon team are offering 25% off any wedding booked to take place between January 1 and March 31 2019 (Ts & Cs apply). better, we can do better,” Harriet created and runs the Mindful Teens Programme to inspire and plant a seed in the teenagers she comes into contact with. During the day they listened and often related to Harriet’s story, they worked in small groups and they got to practice and try out the art of different meditations. The group then chatted together about the challenges and what they enjoyed about taking some time out in a more supportive way. According to Harriet: “A lot of the teens opened up pretty quickly, sharing their concerns and challenges as teenagers growing up in Kerry. Hot topics discussed were: support in relation to safe use of social media, maintaining relationships

and how to manage anxiety.” “It was a great start to our TY school term,” said TY co-ordinator Kerri McCarth. “By introducing mindfulness to our students it equips them with strategies to deal with stressful situations. Nowadays students lead such busy lives and sometimes they nearly forget to breathe so by taking the time to meditate proved very worthwhile for them.” Some of the teens had never meditated before Tuesday and were shocked to have successfully done so for 25 minutes. Some begged Harriet for more… One girl reported that the things she had been anxious about previously had completely disappeared.

Last Tuesday, the Transition Year students at Killarney Community College participated in a Mindful Teens workshop with Psychotherapist Harriet McGuigan. She worked with the TY students showing them new ways that they could support themselves to help keep some balance in their lives. Teenagers nowadays need support – sometimes they are distracting themselves through substance misuse, cyber bullying, online pornography, online gambling or self-harm to name but a few. Oftentimes they are doing this because they are trying to cope in their world and manage their lives. Inspired by the Maya Angelou quote, “When we know

Time To Throw Out The Old & Pot Up The New Words: Debby Looney

Garden Magic

V

If there is one thing I love and respect in gardeners, it’s their enthusiasm and unwavering optimism! You never hear a gardener bemoaning the end of the summer. On the contrary, he is looking forward to the winter flowering pansies! I think this must be one of the reasons that gardening is such a wonderful pastime: it keeps you constantly moving forward. For instance, if you are not a gardener, you are missing out on the wealth of colour and life that exists in winter. Every year, pansies and violas fascinate me, with their friendly faces and limitless range of colour. (I avoid pansies in the summer – for me they belong to autumn and winter!) Have you ever looked closely at the cyclamen flower? It is a wonder of nature. Now is a good time to throw out the old, and pot up the new. The weather has turned nice and cool and, though I am not a meteorologist, I don’t think a heatwave is on the cards! All pots need a centrepiece and a conifer fits the bill perfectly. However, bamboo, grasses and cordylines are also excellent choices. For

something a bit different try Choisya, Holly, dwarf Rhododendron , hebe or Mahonia. Depending on budget, topiary plants are attractive also. Use ordinary potting compost for your winter pots there is no need to put water-saving gel or slow release fertiliser in them. A liquid feed every few weeks is sufficient. Pansies, violas and bellis, (batchelor’s buttons) are all great bedding plants for any situation. Cyclamen can be used, but preferably in a pot which will not get too much water on its head! Cyclamen do not like being too waterlogged, nor do they like full sun – they are a woodland plant. They also need to be deadheaded regularly. You will recognise the difference between bud and seed head as the bud grows on a straight stem and is slightly elongated. The seed head is round and the stem coils – like a spring it releases when the seeds are ripe so they are scattered over a wide area. Ornamental cabbages rank as one of my favourite winter plants. I live high and wide open, which suits them perfectly. If they have it too easy they tend to start growing… Like

cabbage! Incorporating bulbs into your winter pots always adds a nice bit of interest in the spring. Tulip bulbs should be planted quite deeply, put them in before the plants. Anemone blanda is a lovely addition to any display, flowering for a long period early in the spring. Crocus and snowdrops tend to get lost among the foliage of other plants so I would be slow to recommend them for mixed pots. However, planting up pots with only bulbs is also well worth the effort. For a mixed pot, plant in layers. Tulips at the lowest level, daffs above them, miniature daffs and tulips above them then hyacinth, crocus and snowdrops. Placed among shrubs they will give great colour in spring! Debby is available for garden consultations and advice. Call her on 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com. Gardening classes resume on 27th September. The course is 9 weeks and covers every aspect of gardening- from fruit and veg to design and ornamentals. For details please contact the community college during school hours.

Defibrillator Raffle To Benefit Brave Miriam A young mother-of-two who is battling with a devastating form of cancer is to benefit from an innovative fundraising initiative to help finance her very expensive treatment. Primary school teacher Miriam Joy is undergoing a hugely expensive new treatment to help in her battle with triple negative breast cancer. She was diagnosed in May 2017 but the treatment she received was not successful and the cancer has now spread to her brain and lungs. Medical professionals have told the young mother that her only chance of survival is a change of direction with her treatment, but the required immunotherapy will cost a staggering €7,000, every three weeks, for an indefinite length of time. Now the team behind a groundbreaking and lifesaving defibrillator in a phone kiosk project has come to Miriam’s aid with a very unique raffle proposal. The prize is a custom-made traditional telephone kiosk and an AED with all donations generated going to support Miriam who lives with her husband, Pat, and two young children, Noah (10) and Joshua (5), in Castleisland. Tradesman Tommy Hassett, who manufactures the €3,500 phone kiosks that house the AEDs, is a friend of the Joy family and he has teamed up with the Killarney-based Heart of Ireland crew and Ce-Tek Medical to donate a kiosk and a defibrillator to raise funds. The AED kiosks are proving in huge demand all over the country since a pilot scheme was introduced in Killarney some years ago. Heart of Ireland Project official, Damien Baker, said the organisation is glad to be able to help Miriam and her family. “It is being made possible by the generosity of Tommy donating a phone box and Ce-Tek Medical donating an AED and cabinet,” he said. “We would like to wish Miriam and her family the best during this difficult time and we hope that this small act of generosity makes a difference”. Miriam’s brother, Eoin, said the family is hugely

grateful to all involved for the remarkable gesture of generosity. “Their incredible generosity, work and vision in the development of this project has given great support to Miriam as well as providing a lifesaving

device to a community. Their efforts and goodwill have blown us away,” he stated. The raffle will run until October 17 and tickets, priced at €20, are available on the raffle link on the Heart of Ireland Facebook page.

Cyclists Endure Circuit Of Kerry For Health Link Bus

A group of local cyclists endured the tough threeday Circuit of Kerry covering over 600km plus 6,000m of climbing to raise €5,000 for the Cork/ Kerry Health Link Bus. It’s a charity that is close to the heart of many of the group as they have family members who have availed of the vital services over the years. “I would like to thank everyone who cycled the Circuit of Kerry. This fundraising means a great deal to our charity and to our service users as we are not in receipt of government, HSE or Irish Cancer funding,” said Breda Dyland Cork/Kerry Health Link Bus.

College Allegedly Gave Out 500 Fake Diplomas A Spanish university is being investigated for allegedly giving away diplomas to hundreds of Italian nationals. King Juan Carlos University in Madrid reportedly granted law diplomas to around 500 Italians with limited Spanish language skills. The university already faces claims of awarding fraudulent master’s degrees to two Popular Party (PP) politicians. A court spokesman said the latest probe was at a “very early stage.” According to Eldiario.es, the students took trips to take their exams which coincided with Real Madrid matches. The newspaper also said the diplo-

mas allowed the students to practise law all over the European Union, including in Italy, where they would otherwise be required to complete an expensive master’s degree. Cristina Cifuentes, former head of the Madrid region, and ex-health minister Carmen Monton both resigned over allegations the university had awarded them master’s degrees without them completing the work. Since that scandal broke, the university has closed its Institute of Public Law and suspended its former director. Its former chancellor, Fernando Suarez, has been accused of plagiarism but claims he is the victim of defamation and harassment.

Hundreds Feared Missing As Tanzanian Ferry Capsizes

Trump Corner Trump Advises Spain To Build Wall… Across Sahara President Donald Trump advised Spain to build a wall stretching across the Sahara desert in order to stop the flow of migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea, the country’s foreign minister said this week. A video clip shared on Spanish media shows Foreign Minister Josep Borrell bring up Trump’s remark while discussing Spain’s immigration issues at a lunch symposium in Madrid Tuesday. “Closing the ports is not a solution, as neither is it a solution to build a wall across the Sahara desert, as President Trump recently suggested,” he said. “Do you know how big the Sahara is?” Borrell said that Trump responded

Never fails to entertain

to Spanish officials’ skepticism about the practicability of such a wall by saying, “The border with the Sahara can’t be bigger than ours with Mexico,” according to Spanish newspaper El País. The Spanish officials reportedly explained that the Sahara is, in fact, much larger. The Sahara desert stretches about 3,000 miles across northern Africa, making is about 1,000 miles longer than the U.S. border with Mexico. An additional problem with Trump’s suggestion of applying his U.S. immigration solution to Spain is that Spain is separated from the continent of Africa by the Mediterranean Sea and does not physically border any African nations with the exception of two enclaves in northern Africa. The suggested wall would have to be constructed across a number of foreign nations.

Hundreds of people are feared missing after a ferry capsized on Lake Victoria in north Tanzania. A local official told the BBC five people have died and 102 have been rescued, but another said that the vessel was overloaded with more than 400 people on board. The MV Nyerere ferry overturned near the shore between the islands of Ukora and Bugolora. Locals have joined with emergency teams in rescue efforts. The Tanzanian government has confirmed the ferry

capsized but exact figures for those on board are yet to be confirmed. “We pray to God to give us hope in such an accident,” Regional Commissioner Adam Malima told reporters. “We pray to God to give us hope that there has not been a high death toll.” Accidents are common on Africa’s largest lake, Victoria, where boats often depart overcrowded. More than 800 people died in 1996 when the MV Bukoba capsized. It was one of the worst maritime disasters of the last century.

LeBron James To Star In Space Jam 2 Basketball star LeBron James is to appear in a sequel to the 1996 film Space Jam which featured Michael Jordan and Looney Tunes characters. James’ production company, SpringHill Entertainment, shared a picture on Instagram and Twitter revealing details of the film and an image of a locker room. The Warner Bros film will be produced by Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler while Terence Nance is on directing duties.

James, 33, is listed in the picture as a small forward, with Bugs Bunny co-starring as a point guard. No further details were released though James told The Hollywood Reporter he “loved” Coogler’s vision for Black Panther, which he directed. “The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie,” James said. “It’s so much bigger.”

Croydon Cat Killer:

Mystery Solved After Three Years British police have revealed the identity of the so-called Croydon cat killer. Experts ruled foxes or other wildlife were likely behind the mutilations of several hundred cats that died in the south London borough and beyond, the Metropolitan Police said. There is no evidence of human involvement in the grisly incidents, the force said following an investigation lasting nearly three years, adding that it had informed the RSPCA and campaign group South Norwood Animal Rescue and Liberty (Snarl) of its findings. “The cats were killed due to major blunt-force trauma consistent with vehicle collisions. Scavenging foxes then mutilated body parts – especially heads and tails,” officers said. The saga began when concerned residents reported finding the mutilated bodies of cats in Croydon and surrounding areas in November 2015. Officers launched their investigation.

In 2016 campaigners organised post-mortem examinations on 25 cats suspected of having been killed by people and six were deemed suspicious. Police found hundreds more reports from members of the public and charities including in Hertfordshire on the other side of the capital. Eventually, however, the investigation had to end. The Met said: “No evidence of human involvement was found in any of the reported cases. There were no witnesses, no identifiable patterns and no forensic leads that pointed to human involvement. Witness statements were taken, but no suspect was identified.” Scavenging animals like foxes were most likely the culprit, the force said, adding: “Officers also took note of expert opinion – including a recent, widely reported New Scientist article – which highlights how wildlife is known to scavenge on roadkill, often removing the heads and tails of dead animals.”

Video Of Driver Slapping Youth Divides France A viral video of a Paris bus driver slapping a 12-year-old boy for telling him to “shut up” has divided France. The bus driver, who faces disciplinary action, has garnered support from some 300,000 people in a petition. The boy had run out onto the road, forcing the driver to brake hard. When he told the boy to pay attention, he was insulted and reacted, the local transport authority said. The boy’s mother has now reportedly filed a complaint against the driver. The incident, which took place on September 13, was witnessed by dozens in front of the town hall in Arcueil, a southern suburb of the French capital. The boy told police he was

running across the street to catch his bus after school when he heard a horn and an insult hurled at him, attributed to the bus driver. Le Parisien reported he returned the insult without thinking: “Shut up, go on, move on.” The video, which begins at this point, shows teenagers laughing before the bus driver gets out of his vehicle and slaps the boy across the face. The boy stands in shock as those around him cry out. The man - a father of two teens - then asks him how old he is, and says “and how old am I?” before turning back. The video, which was initially posted on instant messaging platform Snapchat, has been

TG4 Apologise For Using CGI Clip Of Caravan Falling Off Cliff National broadcaster TG4 has apologised after a short clip involving a caravan was shown prior to a news segment about a woman’s death yesterday. The computer-generated clip – dubbed an ‘ident’ intended to inform viewers what channel they’re watching – shows a creature kicking a caravan over the side of a cliff.

The clip appeared before a news segment about the death of a Swiss woman after her caravan was blown off the side of a cliff in Co Galway yesterday, during Storm Ali. The clip was aired once and was removed immediately by the broadcaster once it realised its error. TG4 have since apologised over the “unfortunate scheduling” of the ident.

Bono Saw “Pain” On Pope’s Face

U2 frontman Bono has said he could see the pain on Pope Francis’s face on Wednesday when he told him, “it looks to some people that the abusers are being more protected than the victims”. “Having just come from Ireland we talked about the pope’s feelings about what has happened in the Church,” Bono said of his half-hour meeting with Francis at the Vatican. “You can see the pain in his face. And I felt he was sincere. He’s an extraordinary man for extraordinary times.” Francis has been attempting to address the latest wave of devastating claims of sexual abuse by clergy across the world.

viewed almost 1.2 million times. The Paris transport authority RATP has launched a disciplinary procedure against the driver. It strongly condemned his violent action, which it said was contrary to the principles and values of a state-owned public transport company.

Past abuse scandals have badly damaged the image of the Catholic Church in Ireland, where Francis travelled for two days in late August and “begged for God’s forgiveness”. The trip, which was met with some protests by victims, was overshadowed by a former ambassador to the Holy See’s claim that Francis personally ignored sexual abuse allegations against a prominent US cardinal. Bono (58) said he also spoke to the Argentine pontiff about “how we have to rethink the wild beast that is capitalism” which “though it is not immoral, it is amoral”.

The bus driver has admitted to them that he reacted emotionally and indicated that he regretted his actions, RATP said. Colleagues however have launched a petition in support of the driver, which has collected some 300,000 signatures within a week.

Peugeot Previews Reborn 504 Coupe Peugeot will tap into its illustrious back catalogue at the Paris motor show with a new coupe concept. Teasing a single picture of the unnamed car it plans to reveal, the single darkened image appears to suggest the small two-door concept will draw direct inspiration from the handsome 504 Coupe that was produced between 1969 and 1983. So far, no details have been given on what will power the Peugeot coupe concept, but it’s likely to come with the carmaker’s new pure-electric powertrain technology.

Volkswagen has unveiled yet another EV concept in the form of a commercial van called the VW I.D. Buzz Cargo. The load-lugging I.D. van made its global premiere at the Hannover truck show in Germany recently. It has a cargo capacity of 800kg, a driving range of around 550km when equipped with a big 111kWh lithium-ion battery and a 230-volt power socket so drivers can plug in devices and equipment. The compact van features a 150kW electric motor that powers the rear wheels, and an all-wheel

drive version will be available. It has a top speed of 160km/h. The vehicle features an electrically operated sliding side door to access the cargo area, plus rear barn doors and two front doors, all of which are unlocked via smartphone proximity. Inside, the traditional cockpit is gone, replaced by an augmented reality display projection on the windscreen. The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz Cargo has cameras instead of wing mirrors and could easily become a production car given it’s based on the same MEB platform as VW’s other impending EVs.

Ferrari Reveals 812-Based Monza & Details Future

Ferrari has revealed two limited edition, retro-styled Monza supercars based on its 812 Superfast at a VIP preview event held at its Maranello HQ. Available in either one or two-seat configuration, the new Ferrari Monza SP1 and Monza SP2 were revealed at the private event for customers. Ferrari says it will build no more than 500 examples of the two models combined, and the com-

plete production run of Monza SP1 and Monza SP2 vehicles has all already been spoken for with each buyer thought to have parted with more than €1 million. In the future, the carmaker said it would offer more limited-editions based on its core models in a bid to boost profits, as cars like the Monza come with significantly higher price tags and larger profit margins.

Netflix - Norm MacDonald Has A Show

Review: Hozier – Nina Cried Power EP After announcing his upcoming INEC December gig early this week, we thought there no better time to have a look at Hozier’s new four-track EP Nina Cried Power, his first record since 2016’s Better Love, which was a once-off single that arrived after his hugely successful self-titled album. ‘Nina Cried Power’ is the lead-track and features the soul legend Mavis Staples as a guest vocalist. It’s a song that stays true to

51

Hozier’s soul-gospel leanings but digs deeper and more confidently vocally into that sound, while shouting out vocal legends alongside the titular Nina Simone. The rest of the songs recall the acoustic guitar ballads he previously established along with the bluesy-rock of his early work. A must listen to anyone that went out and bought tickets this morning for Hozier’s December INEC trek.

Comic Norm MacDonald first made a name for himself on “Saturday Night Live” in the 1990s as anchor of the show’s popular “Weekend Update” segment. Since leaving the late-night staple in 1998, the comic has appeared in various TV shows and movies and hosted his own podcast inn which he, along with sidekick Adam Eget, interviewed celebrities.

Now Macdonald and Eget are bringing a version of the podcast to Netflix with this half-hour series. In each episode, the hosts interview a celebrity -- with a lineup that includes the likes of actress Drew Barrymore, late-night host David Letterman and “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels -- in a conversation that often takes unexpected -- and comical -- turns.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. BTF.

Early Days But This Lakers Team Could Go A Long Way National League Division One Scotts Lakers v UL Eagles | Sunday at 3pm

| Killarney Sports Centre

Words: Adam Moynihan

It’s far too early to be making bold predictions – especially when there are a number of new teams in the league – but things are looking up for the Scotts Lakers. The 2017/18 season was predictably up and down as St Paul’s tried to reacclimatise to National League basketball but now, with one year under their belt and some exciting new signings in their ranks, the Lakers appear to have all the right ingredients to make a real impression in Division One. Coach Cormac O’Donoghue is fortunate to have plenty of local talent at his disposal, most notably athletic all-rounder Mark Greene who was excellent last weekend, but ultimately your Americans and your Europeans are likely to be your most influential players. To this end, the Lakers recruited guard Seán O’Brien from the States at the last minute to replace the outgoing Harrison Deneka, who was traded to Galway. If O’Brien’s home debut is anything to go by, that late transfer may prove to be a masterstroke. O’Brien was outstanding last Saturday night against Mathews. He top-scored with 37 points, shooting 12/20 from the field and a perfect 9/9 from the line. But the Philadelphia native is more than just a finisher. For me, the most impressive aspect of his performance was his attitude. The newcomer worked as hard as (if not harder than) anyone on the floor and showed a degree of selflessness rarely seen in American imports. At 6’2” the former Colgate University star is no giant but he got more offensive rebounds (4) than any of his teammates and he also finished up with four steals. His active hands made things difficult for Mathews all night long and if he can maintain this level of effort, he is sure to become a firm fan favourite here in Killarney. Dutch big man Papito Hersisia also did well. He racked up 18 points, 14 rebounds and a couple of blocks in a solid outing and he seems to have all the necessary tools to be a dominant force in the league. Last year the Lakers were expecting Antuan Bootle to play that role but I felt he lacked a bit of aggression down low. The Bahamian-American seemed to settle for jump shots a bit too often when realistically a player that big and strong should be doing most of his damage closer to the basket.

Philip O’Connor drives for the basket. Pics: Eamonn Keogh.

Papito likes to shoot as well – and he’s not a bad shooter by the looks of things – but if he can use his huge frame to control the paint, the Lakers will be hard to beat this season. On Saturday, the home team grabbed nine offensive rebounds (the opposition had 10) but the majority were corralled by guards. In Hersisia and Andrew Fitzgerald the Lakers have great size and athleticism so there’s no reason why that number can’t improve over the course of the campaign. One big positive for Cormac O’Donoghue was the low number of turnovers given up by his new-look team. Turnovers were an issue throughout the Lakers’ comeback season but they were careful with the ball against Mathews, coughing up possession just eight times. Mathews, meanwhile, had 18 turnovers and that differential was undoubtedly one of

the deciding factors on the night. All in all it has been a promising start and they’ll have a chance to build on it this weekend as they face into their first double-header of the campaign. The Lakers face the winless WIT Vikings on Saturday in Waterford before returning home to play the UL Eagles on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles lost their opening game of the season against Portlaoise despite getting 32 points from American guard Tarchee Brown.

Sport Lakers Overturn 15-Point Deficit To Beat Mathews

National League Division One Scotts Lakers 93 | Fr Mathews 70

Words: Eamonn Keogh Before the game, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Killarney basketball legend Paudie O’Connor.

Front: Seán O’Brien, Dailian Mason, Mark Greene (captain), Shane McCarthy, Philip O’Connor and Cian Clernon. Back: John Brosnan (Manager), James Murphy, Marko Bencic, Papito Hersisia, Justin Tuason, Andrew Fitzgerald, Dylan O’Sullivan and Cormac O’Donoghue (Coach). Pics: Eamonn Keogh.

Scotts Lakers:

Seán O’Brien (37), Papito Hersisia (18), Mark Greene (14), Dailian Mason (12), Andrew Fitzgerald (5), Shane McCarthy (4), Cian Clernon (2), Justin Tuason (1), Philip O’Connor, Dylan O’Sullivan, Marko Bencic and James Murphy.

Fr Mathews:

Deon Baker Jr (25), Michael McGinn (21) and Paul O’Driscoll (11).

St Paul’s BC chairman Paul Sheehan makes a special presentation to athlete Jordan Lee.

Despite trailing by 15 points at one stage, Scotts Lakers St Paul’s bounced back to take complete control and secure a comprehensive 23-point victory over Fr Mathews in Killarney Sports Centre on Saturday night. A capacity crowd filled the Killarney venue for this opening home game of the season and they didn’t go home disappointed. It was a match where Scotts Lakers’ outstanding new American signing Seán O’Brien was the difference between the sides. A game high of 37 points combined with a tremendous all-round display on both sides of the court meant he stood out from any other player on view. The Killarney side have certainly secured the services of a quality American player and his presence will be a huge boost to the Lakers’ challenge this season. It was the visitors who started much the better side with American Deon Baker Jr and Mike McGinn leading the way and Mathews led 13-2 after four minutes. The Lakers’ only return in these opening minutes was two points from the free throw line. It was a full four minutes of before Dailian Mason scored the home side’s first basket from play. Mathews led 20-5 with four minutes left in the first quarter as the Lakers struggled to make any impact. The introduction of veteran assistant coach Shane McCarthy made a big difference for the Lakers. His smart assist play opened up opportunities for O’Brien, Papito Hersisia, Mark Greene and Mason as the Lakers powered their way back into contention. They trailed by just two, 23-25, at the end of the first quarter. The home side continued to impress in the second quarter with big three-pointers from O’Brien, Greene, Hersisia and McCarthy and they led 44-36 with four minutes left in the half. They maintained control with further scores from Andrew Fitzgerald and Mark Greene to lead 57-43 at half-time. Fr Mathews tried everything in the third quarter to narrow the gap but Seán O’Brien led the Killarney challenge to great effect. His superb ball-handling skills and intelligent play beat Mathews’ full court press every time as the home side continued to dominate. Cormac O’Donoghue’s team led 7456 entering the final quarter. The gap was stretched to 91-62 with four minutes left in the final period. O’Brien left the action with less than three minutes remaining. He had scored 37 points at that stage despite the slow start and the other times he sat out during the course of the game. It was a mere formality in the end with Scotts Lakers cruising to a 93-70 victory. It was a big improvement on the team performance from the win over Limerick IT the previous week. The alarming stat of one from 27 three-point attempts from that match improved significantly last Saturday night with eleven converted from 29 attempts. The outstanding Seán O’Brien hit four of those while Mark Greene played a captain’s part sinking four from five three-point attempts. A minute’s silence was observed before the match for Killarney and Irish basketball legend Paudie O’Connor, who passed away last May. Capped over 100 times for Ireland, Paudie was the only Irish player ever selected on a European All-Star starting five and he brought the first American basketballers to Ireland in 1979. His nephew Philip O’Connor is a current Scotts Lakers player and carries on the tradition of Killarney’s most famous basketball family. St Paul’s Basketball Club also honoured local athlete and talented basketballer Jordan Lee with a presentation at half-time to mark his bronze medal achievement in the high jump at the recent European Para Athletics Championships in Berlin.

Crokes Bounce Back

To Set Up Legion Showdown

Words: Adam Moynihan It’s the draw that has the whole town talking: reigning champions Dr Crokes will face neighbours the Killarney Legion in the quarter-final of the Kerry Senior Football Championship. The game will be played at 3.45pm next Sunday, September 30 in the Fitzgerald Stadium and will form part of a double-header with the equally-tantalising East Kerry versus South Kerry clash, which throws in at 2pm. Crokes suffered a shock defeat to Kerins O’Rahilly’s a fortnight ago but any doubts about their form were firmly put to bed on Sunday as they demolished An Ghaeltacht by 3-28 to 2-15 in the Park. It was a solid team performance by Pat O’Shea’s side but corner forward Tony Brosnan, who was making his return from a nasty wrist injury, was the undoubted star of the show. Brosnan kicked 1-14 (1-10 from play) in a memorable display and his tally is made all the more remarkable when you consider that he didn’t kick a single wide. Actually, he did miss one shot: he went for goal in the second half and whistled just over the bar. He also set up Crokes’ other two goals, both of which were expertly finished by veteran marksman Kieran O’Leary. The first assist was a raking 40-yard pass, the second was more like a spot of volleyball than football, but both were superbly executed and on this form Brosnan is one of the most dangerous attackers in the county. It was no coincidence that Crokes’ “dip” coincided with the absence of Brosnan and influential half-back Gavin White. Both were back in from the start against An Ghaeltacht and Crokes looked far more assured as a result. The men from the west capitalised on a sloppy Crokes start to lead 1-2 to 0-3 midway through the first half but a moment of madness from player/manager Marc Ó Sé turned the tie on its head. The Kerry legend appeared to strike out at former teammate Kieran O’Leary and he subsequently received his marching orders. It was always going to be an uphill battle from that point on and the Killarney side led by nine, 2-12 to 1-6, at the break. With the Rahilly’s game fresh in the memory, one or two easy jokes were being made up in the terrace at half-time but realistically there was no chance of lightning striking twice. Substitute Tomás Ó Sé goaled with the first attack of the period but Crokes steadied the ship and finished strongly to seal an utterly comprehensive victory. Attention immediately turned to the last eight and as soon as the draw was made after the match, word quickly filtered around town that Killarney’s biggest sporting rivals, the Crokes and the Legion, would be going head-to-head in the next round. My Legion teammates have found a bit of form in this year’s championship and we were obviously pleased to beat Rathmore and Mid Kerry to take the direct route to the quarters. As for the draw, you always look forward to games against the Crokes but it’s a tough match-up and you’d imagine that they’ll be heavy favourites heading into it. Regardless of the outcome, it should be a keenly contested game and hopefully

a good advertisement for football in Killarney. Free-scoring East Kerry will face their toughest test to date when they play South Kerry and that match should be a cracker as well. The evergreen Bryan Sheehan kicked 1-3 in his side’s 1-15 to 0-11 win over Rathmore last weekend and South Kerry are notoriously hard to shake when it comes down to the business end of the season.

In the other quarter-final double-header, Division 2 champions Austin Stacks play Dingle and Kerins O’Rahilly’s play St Brendan’s in an allTralee clash. Both of those games will be played in Austin Stack Park on Saturday. If you look at it from a neutral’s perspective, I doubt you could have handpicked a better set of fixtures for this stage of the competition and it promises to be a great weekend of action.

Munster GAA Briefs New role for Pat O’Shea

Dr Crokes boss Pat O’Shea has been appointed Games Development Manager with responsibility for Football Development. Pat will work with the six Munster counties on the development of Gaelic football including development squads, club coaching, school structures etc. In addition, Joe Carton (Waterford) has been appointed Games Development Manager with responsibility for Hurling Development.

Dr Crokes qualified to meet Legion in the last eight of the Kerry SFC on the weekend of September 29/30 after easily disposing of An Ghaeltacht’s challenge in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. Tony Brosnan was the chief scorer for Crokes. This was his first game back after an eight-week lay off with a broken wrist, but he showed wonderful form, scoring 1-14 and 1-10 of this was from play. He scored from all angles in this faultless display of scoring and he laid on two goals for Kieran O’Leary who also impressed, scoring 2-3. An Ghaeltacht started brightly and led 1-2 to 0-4 after 15 minutes. Rob Ó Sé was their goal scorer, but his side was reduced to 14 men when Marc Ó Sé was issued with a straight red after punching Kieran O Leary. David Shaw continues to impress for Crokes and he earned his call up to score four points. Crokes built from the back with team captain John Payne in fine form. Johnny Buckley enjoyed the extra freedom in the middle of the park and set up his forwards for those match-winning scores and a commanding lead of 2-12 to 1-6 at the break. Tomás Ó Sé was introduced and he made an immediate impact, scoring 1-1 at the start of the second half. That was as good as it got for them as Tony Brosnan continued to score freely and Kieran O’Leary added his second goal. Gavin White had his first full game back and he made a difference. Colm Cooper did not line out as he was suffering from a bout of tonsillitis. St Brendan’s, meanwhile, defeated Mid Ker-

Ladies choice

Much has been said and written about the Kerry minors’ five-in-a-row and Dublin’s opportunity to overcome the Kerry seniors’ unlucky bid for five-ina-row which was scuppered by that Seamus Darby goal in 1982. Dublin are good enough and have the resources to make it six in a row but one must never forget that the Kerry ladies won a whopping nine consecutive All-Irelands between 1982 and 1990, and won 10 in 12 years during that golden era. Mary Jo Curran was the star Kerry player at that time and it is great to see her promoting the game in Kerry to this present day. Mary Geaney and Katie Liston are other names that spring to mind from that time. Cork were the team of the 2000’s winning 11 of the

ry 3-18 to 1-18. Once again Ivan Parker from Churchill was top scorer with 2-8. Six of these points were from frees. County star Jack Barry caught some fine balls and his tussle at midfield with fellow county man David Moran should be a key factor in their next round match against Kerins O Rahilly’s. Mid Kerry disappointed. Darran O’Sullivan tried hard but fellow county men Peter Crowley and Donnchadh Walsh made no impression. South Kerry 1-15 Rathmore 0-11. Rathmore had the aid of a good breeze in the first half but made little use of it. Once again Bryan Sheehan showed his class in the 20th minute when he struck for a great goal. His side led 1-8 to 0-6 at the interval. Rathmore were very dependent on the marksmanship of Shane Ryan. He scored five points from frees and one from play. Kerry star Paul Murphy tried hardest for Rathmore. Graham O’Sullivan did well for the men from Iveragh. The winners will meet the fancied East Kerry side in the next round. Dingle 1-14 St Kieran’s 1-11. St Kieran’s double marked Kerry ace full forward Paul Geaney and he was held scoreless. His best attempt came just before half-time but the effort was well saved by Kieran’s goalkeeper Sean Óg Ó Ciardubháin. Dingle led by 10 points to 6 at the half-way stage. A Barry O’Sullivan goal in the 55th minute gave Dingle some breathing space even though Danny Hickey scored a goal for the losers well into stoppage time. Next up for Dingle will be Austin Stacks. last 13 finals. They lost out to Dublin on Sunday last 3-11 to 1-12. In 1974 there were only 300 players in the LGFA. This grew to 14,000 in 1994 and total membership today is estimated at 188,000. It is very much alive and well. Attendance at last Sunday’s All Ireland finals in Croke Park was a whopping 50,141. One of the great areas of growth is in evidence at local level where the local East Kerry GAA clubs have active teams for the ladies. Long may they prosper.

Golden glory for Skibbereen brothers

Congratulations to the O’Donavan brothers Gary and Paul who had to “pull like a dog” to win the lightweight men’s double sculls at the World Championships in Bulgaria last weekend. They won

The first round of games will begin on the week ending May 12 (one week earlier than 2018) and the Munster Championship will be run over six weeks, allowing a break weekend for all counties midway through the round-robin series. The final round of games will take place on week ending June 16.

Munster Championship Draws

The draws for the 2019 Munster Senior Football Championship will take place on October 11 in conjunction with the other Provincial Senior Football Championship draws. The draws for the 2019 Munster U-20 Hurling and Munster U-20 Football Championships will take place at the next Munster CCC meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 29.

2019 Minor Football Championship

A new format for the Munster Minor Football Championship has been confirmed on a one-year trial basis. Phase 1 will see a round-robin format involving Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford with each county getting three games. The top two teams will then play the Phase 1 Final. The winner of the Phase 1 Final will join Cork and Kerry in a Phase 2 round-rob in format, with the top 2 teams qualifying for the Munster Final. The purpose of the new format is to ensure that the developing counties of Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford get at least three games against teams of a similar standard. The Phase 1 Final winner will have played four games before progressing to meet Cork and Kerry.

Scoreboard and clock

Good to hear that plans are well on hand for the installation of an electronic scoreboard in the Fitzgerald Stadium. I presume that this will also include a clock.

the coveted gold medals with a strong finish in the last 500 metres to hold off the fast-finishing Italian crew. They are our best hope for medals in the next Olympics in Tokyo in 2020. There was glory as well for Sanita Puspure who won the gold medal in the women’s single sculls.

Cards galore

In Tyrone, Edendork defeated Moy by a single point in an indisciplined affair. Six players were sent off and the referee Kieran Eanetta issued 27 cards: 20 yellow, six red and one black. Social media showed Moy’s player/manager Sean Kavanagh’s bruised face after he suffered a broken nose and concussion. This is not the first time a game in Tyrone has ended in a free for all.

Does Kerry Have Too Many Soccer Clubs? Words: Adam Moynihan Both Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic got their Premier A campaigns up and running with hard-fought victories last weekend. Athletic boss Stuart Templeman fielded a vibrant looking team for their season opener away to Fenit and the Blues came home with all three points thanks to goals from Will Courtney and Seán Cournane. Fenit are a decent team and Samphire Park is a notoriously difficult venue so Athletic will be delighted to get a result back there. Elsewhere, reigning champions Killarney Celtic bounced back from a disappointing 3-3 draw with Castleisland to defeat Tralee Dynamos in Celtic Park on Sunday. Dynamos led 2-1 at halftime thanks to goals from Przemek Skrzypczak and Tony Duggan but a brace from diminutive winger Danny Roche rescued the points for Brian Spillane’s team. Pa McGrath was Celtic’s other scorer on the day. You might have noticed that Tralee Dynamos got relegated from the Premier A last season so you’re probably wondering how they’re playing Celtic in the league this season. Dynamos’ relegation was reversed when Mastergeeha, who finished third

from bottom and stayed up at Dynamos’ expense, decided to withdraw from the top flight and re-insert themselves into Division 2A – the fifth tier of Kerry soccer. Geeha obviously feel as though they’re better off in a lower division but dropping down four tiers is strange. They fought hard to pick up results last season; evidently the players were wasting their time. Dynamos, meanwhile, had a poor season and wound up in the relegation places but they’re not facing any repercussions. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s good for the league that big clubs like Dynamos are in the Premier A, and I’m sure it wasn’t a decision that Geeha took lightly, but what’s the point in having promotion and relegation at all if clubs can just decide what division they want to play in? Four teams have pulled out of the Premier A in the past two seasons (Rattoo, Park, Kenmare and now Geeha). There are 34 clubs in the county and if big town clubs like Park and Dynamos are struggling to put competitive teams together, maybe 34 is too many?

Munster Back To Winning Ways Munster Rugby got back to winning ways at Irish Independent Park in Cork last weekend in the latest round of the PRO14. Welsh outfit the Ospreys were the opposition and Johan Van Graan made 11 changes to the starting line up from the team which started in the poor showing against Glasgow. Chris Cloete returned from his arm injury which had kept him out of action towards the end of last season and provided a masterclass in returning to competitive action, as did Peter O’Mahony. A good run out for Munster as they went on to win 49 points to 13 with eight tries scored in all - and the bonus point earned in the first half to boot. The Cork Camogie team were honoured at half-time following their All-Ireland success and Kieran Donaghy was also interviewed during the break. It’s great to see Munster acknowledging other sports and the greats. Next weekend Munster take on Cardiff Blues at Cardiff Arms Park in the PRO14 with matches against Ulster at Thomond Park and Leinster at the Aviva coming up in early October.

Ott Tanak Boosts WRC Title Hopes With Victory In Turkey Toyota’s Ott Tanak completed a hat-trick of World Rally Championship event wins at last weekend’s Rally Turkey, capitalising on the retirement of title rivals Sebastien Ogier of M-Sport and Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville. Many of the top World Rally Championship cars retired in one of the toughest rallies in recent memory, as they returned to Turkey for the first time since 2010. Tanak had seemed well out of the victory battle and was as low as ninth on Friday, but surged through the field to capitalise in the tricky conditions. He then inherited the lead as Andreas Mikkselsen hit trouble on Saturday afternoon. Yet again there was drama for Ireland’s Craig Breen in this Citroen. Breen, who had led Rally Turkey on the opening day before being delayed by damaged tyres, was slowed by smoke coming into the cockpit on the second run through the Datca test on Saturday. He stopped twice to check the car, but continued after he and co-driver Scott Martin were unable

to detect the fire. Breen put the car into ‘road’ mode to reduce under-bonnet temperatures, which stopped the smoke. Jacking the Citroen up to check underneath it at the end of the stage, it caught fire and burned out of control moments later.

In the second half MEK went up a level and a second half hat trick from James Clifford and one from Noah O’Shea settled the match. Clifford and O’Shea superb throughout. Toastmasters Killarney

We held our very first club meeting of the new year on Tuesday, 11th September. As always, the guest greeter welcomed everyone to the club on arrival, both members and new guests. Susan, our President, opened the first meeting of the year and handed control to our Toastmaster, Debby. Debby welcomed new guests and provided a short insight into Toastmasters and reassured guests that speaking at the meeting is entirely up to each individual and their comfort zone. Our General Evaluator of the night, Paul, introduced the meeting officers whereby each explained their role. Our word of the night was ‘Reiterate’; people are encouraged to use this when speaking during the meeting. Jane was our Topicsmaster and she certainly generated a huge level of discussion. From Kerry Football to Summer memories, topics that almost all everyone could relate to. In line with the normal structure od the night, we had three prepared speeches. At the members moment section, Liz gave a very honest account of her Toastmasters journey, which started al most three years ago and how supportive the environment has been for her fear of public speaking. A wonderful icebreaker from James, a new member, was an excellent opening speech to the new year providing everyone with an insight into his life growing up in Northern Ireland. Shane didn’t disappoint and gave a powerful motivational speech on the benefits of goals setting ‘take your points and the goals will look after themselves’ was the main premise to the speech. Lastly, Jan delivered an informative and educational speech with the aid of PowerPoint on Artificial Intelligence and it’s use in computer chess. The welcomed break for tea, coffee and

Dr Crokes Club

KERRY COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 3: Dr Crokes 3-28 An Ghaeltacht 2-14, Played in Fitzgerald Stadium. This game was very evenly contested in the first quarter. We were behind 1-2 to 0-4 at the end of this period. We were playing against the strong breeze and when our opponents lost a player to a red card their task became very formidable. We got on top with five points without reply and when we rattled the net in the 25th and 29th minute we were helped to an interval lead of 2-12 to 1-6, An Ghaeltacht to their credit came out all guns blazing and had a goal at the start of the second half. We were always able

to add to our scoring tally and scored 1-16 to our opponents 1-8 in the second thirty minutes. Over the hour we had eight different scorers, with corner forward Tony Brosnan hitting 1-13. The forwards did combine well for the scores and our attacking game was good for the most part. This is not to say that this was a dream display. We were lethargic at times especially in the first ten minutes of the game. Our overall display in the quarter final will have to be several notches higher if we want to advance further in the competition. Never the less it was encouraging that this display was an improvement on the earlier rounds and I feel that there is still a good bit left in the tank. SCOR: Scor na nOg will be starting up for children who will be under 17 years old on 01.01.2019. Contact Ger Lyne on 086 1541840 for more information.
