Win or lose on Sunday, the Kerry football team will be assured of a gala welcome home on Monday night. | By Sean Moriarty A special homecoming event is being planned for Fitzgerald Stadium from around 9pm on Monday. This is a break from tradition as previous homecomings took place in the Glebe Car Park on College St. Staying with tradition, the team will visit the county town of Tralee first from around 6pm on Monday, where up to 10,000 people are expected on Denny St should Jack O’Connor’s men be successful against Galway on Sunday. The Tralee event is expected to last until about 8.00pm when the team will be transferred by coach to Killarney. The new venue, which includes the construction of a new stage for the occasion, will accommodate 40,000 fans according to GAA chiefs in the country. The event will include live DJs and music ahead of the arrival of the team. The Killarney Advertiser understands that the main reason the venue was changed was the unavailability of the Glebe car park. This year’s All Ireland Football final is be-
ing played in July for the first time as opposed to the traditional September date. The tourist season is in full flight, Bird’s Funfair are still in town and taken up their residence in the Fair Hill car park. New health and safety regulations and connected red tape also forced the County Board’s hands when it came to planning the homecoming celebration.
“This could be the way forward,” county board chairman and Dr Crokes GAA club member Patrick ‘Tatler’ O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. “[As a county board] our main priority was the needs of the team and players, a separate team are looking after the homecoming, they worked with the Gardai and did all the safety statements. Ker-
ry is unusual in that we have to have two separate homecomings – one in Tralee and one in Killarney – and there is a lot of planning in deciding who gets where and at what time.” Looking ahead to the big game Patrick said: “It is in the hands of the gods, hopefully they will be shining down on us on Sunday.”
Dublin’s six-time All-Ireland Winner Diarmuid Connolly backs Kerry Dublin legend Diarmuid Connolly believes the All-Ireland Final is the perfect stage for David Clifford to showcase his talent as Kerry prepare to face Galway in the decider at Croke Park. The Fossa man has played a starring role in Kerry’s run to the final and will start Sunday’s showdown the odds-on favourite to be crowned Senior Football Championship Player of the Year. “Some may say David Clifford had a quiet enough day in the semi-final,” said Connolly “But he still scored six and every time he got the ball in his hands, he
looked like he was going to do something dangerous. This match-up will be key for Galway, because if Clifford gets going, he could put 1-6 or 1-7 on the board in a short space of time. I think man of the match has him written all over it. He’s the stand-out guy in this Kerry team and the All-Ireland Final is made for him.” Connolly has also warned Galway that nullifying Clifford may not be enough if they are to get their hands on Sam Maguire for the first time since 2001. “You have to look at Paudie too, who was man of the match against Dublin,” he added. “It’ll probably be Sean Kelly or Liam Silke picking up David Clifford, but
you can’t just focus on one guy, because the rest of them will start playing ball. The fact Kerry are hot favourites is justified. “Connor Gleeson will have to get the ball off quickly to put pressure on the Kerry midfield and half forward line. If they go short, Kerry could just swamp them and that’s not what Galway need. They need quick balls into Damien Comer to get those scores. “If they start well, then Comer and Walsh, as well as Cillian McDaid and Paul Conroy in the middle of the park, are the lynchpins who will drive them forward. Comer was a beast against Derry, he’s top of the ground at the minute and he’ll take a bit

of watching. “Tom O’Sullivan will probably mark Shane Walsh and he’s a tenacious man-marker, so Walsh will have it all to do.”

Family question ambulance response with fatal consequences | By Sean Moriarty The family of a Crosstown man who died while waiting two hours for ambulance have questioned the National Ambulance Service’s operating system.
Edmund ‘Eddie’ Horgan had to wait over two hours after suffering serious head injures in a fall.
Retired Garda Edmond (Eddie) Horgan was on a tour of Cork’s Spike Island last July when he fell and suffered serious head injuries. At last week’s inquest his family raised concerns that Mr Horgan was first tended to at 11.22am but did not get to Cork University Hospital until 2.30pm on the day of the accident.
He died on July 8, last year less than 24 hours after arriving at Cork University Hospital. The inquest was told that the initial ambulance assigned to Mr Horgan was diverted to another incident. The National Ambulance Service control room in Dublin was first called at 11.32 but an ambulance did not arrive on the scene until 13.22. The second incident was deemed more urgent by the National Ambulance Service control room. In a joint family statement issued to the Killarney Advertiser, the family said: “We have questioned the categorisation of their father’s accident as non- life threat-
ening by the National Ambulance Service as he had clearly indicated to them on the initial call for assistance that he was on blood thinning medication. We also questioned why there was almost two hours of a delay in an ambulance being dispatched when time was of the essence.” Mr Horgan was originally from Kilmichael, County Cork. He was retired member of An Garda Síochána and also worked for Kerry Coaches in Killarney. He is survived by his children John, Edward, Carl and Ann Marie, and grandchildren Lucy, Hugh, Carl and Ella and a wider circle of family and friends.

Féile Lughnasadhbuilt on tradition Féile Lughnasadh will take place in Milltown from July 28 to 31, and marks a very important time in the life of ancient Ireland. The festival, featuring Sharon Shannon, Jiggy and The Rising playing free, open-air concerts, will be a spectacular celebration of tradition and culture for all the family. Féile Lughnasadh is based on the late July celebration of the beginning of the annual harvest and the origins of this reach back into the mists of Celtic lore. The Celtic god Lugh is honoured in many parts of the Celtic world, throughout Ireland and Europe. County Louth and the Galician city of Lugo in Spain both derive their names from this Celtic past. Traditions including Garland Sunday and Lammastide also owe their origins to honouring Lugh, the protector of the people and provider of the rich harvest of food, sustaining all for the long winter ahead. Legend tells us that Lugh defeated Crom Dubh and freed the people from darkness and hunger. The end of July in ancient times would see nuts and berries ripen, before the main crops of grain and roots later in the year. People celebrated nature’s abundance and hoped the gods would ensure a dry autumn and a good harvest. Lugh and his foster mother, Tailtiu, are the Celtic figures most associated with this festival. Tailtiu gives her name to the Tailteann games, a term used for several events, most recently in the football championships. Lughnasadh is a key event in the Celtic

year, marking the half-way point between the summer solstice on June 21st and the autumn equinox on September 21. “It’s fitting to name our festival after a god who protects the people and provides for their needs. Our festival comes at a time where we need to get out and celebrate our cherished traditions again”, said organiser Owen O’Shea. "The ancient origins of the festival will be marked with the opening parade on July 28th, with local groups in costume as Lugh and Tailtiu, wearing traditional straw and rush garments in what promises to be a spectacular opening. “We’ve worked with local groups, using traditional methods to recreate Celtic ceremonial clothes making for a rich, authentic experience.”
St Francis’s receive €500 donation from ALDI St. Francis Special School get €500 from ALDI’s Community Grants scheme. ALDI’s Community Grants programme helps fund local charities and community organisations that contribute vital work and services in their local communities. Each local charity supported is chosen by ALDI employees, enabling them to help

Algae warning at Lough Leane Kerry County Council has erected signage at a number of locations along the shore of Lough Leane to advise members of the public of the potential for an algal bloom in the water and on the shoreline. Following the taking of samples by Kerry County Council staff in recent days, laboratory tests confirmed the presence of cyanobacteria (a blue-green algae) indicating the potential for the formation of algae along the shoreline. “In accordance with protocols for these
situations, precautionary signage has been erected at locations along Lough Leane and those who frequent the shoreline are being advised to exercise caution,” said a council spokesperson. “Members of the public are advised not to bathe in water if there are visible signs of algal blooms in the vicinity. They are also advised to ensure that they keep their dogs under control as such algal accumulations can be harmful on ingestion. The situation is being monitored closely on an ongoing basis by Kerry County Council.

A pub with no beer and a bank with no cash Politicians have hit out against plans by Allied Irish Bank to make five branches in the county cashless. This week the bank announced that its Kenmare, Castleisland, Killorglin, Cahersiveen and Dingle will cease all cash transactions, including the lodgement and withdrawal of notes and coins, foreign currency exchange and bank drafts. ATM machines are to be removed from all five branches too with the notice coming into effect by the end of September. Kerry Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill has compared the announcement to a local publican advising that he was no longer selling alcohol. “We have all heard the song ‘The Pub With No Beer’ but a Bank with no cash is beyond a joke. AIB Bank has once again left down the people of Ireland by withdrawing vital services from them” said Cahill. “I understand that cards are increasing in usage, but that is mostly amongst our younger population. Many of us reared in the cash era, continue to rely on notes and coins to transact our business and transferring to plastic or digital payments would be terribly difficult.” TD Danny Healy-Rae also reacted to the announcement calling it “a deplorable action”
THE KILLARNEY ADVERTISER SAYS Our journalist SEAN MORIARTY shares his thoughts on the week's news
In defence of Bird’s Amusements A common reaction to recent news stories – particularly those relating to traffic and car parking in town – is the arrival of Bird’s Amusements summer residency in the Fair Hill car park.
“Many people still use and need cash to survive. Many businesses, farmers, tradesmen and elderly people won’t be able to manage and won’t be able to get change or make lodgements and it will be setting up families and households for more robberies,” he said. “The Government have a large share in the bank. Why are the Government totally silent on this? I am calling on the Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and the Government to step in as everyone is still paying for bailing out the banks in 2009.”
Many people are calling for the funfair to find an alternative, out of town location, for its summer residency. Bird’s Amusements, Ireland’s largest travelling funfair have been coming to Killarney town for 85 years The family funfair has only ever missed one summer in Killarney, during COVID-19 restrictions in 2020, since their first visit in 1937. The fair, currently operated by founder William Bird’s grandson Don and his children, has always been held in the Fair Hill car park. They pay a large fee to Kerry County Councilt to rent the space for the summer. It is an essential part of summer in Killarney. Moving it out of town will have
a negative effect on businesses in the town centre. Yes, the arrival of the funfair comes at a cost, it ties up 110 town centre car parking spaces for July and part of August. But the majority giving out about the lack of spaces or looking for free parking in the town centre are the very people who would park there all day, as they attend their place of work or got about other business. In simple terms, kicking the fun fair out of town will not go next or near solving the parking issues in town. A don’t forget, the Bird family made a massive contribution to the original construction of Fitzgerald Stadium. Maybe the GAA would consider building an out-of-town stadium to free up traffic congestion in the town centre on a big match days. What has to be sauce for the goose has to be sauce for the gander too!
Leading cardiologist to give healthy heart talk A cardiologist attached to the Bon Secours Hospital in Tralee will give a talk on healthy hearts on Tuesday evening. Orgnaised by HeartBeat Killarney, the public event will take place at 8pm at the Parish Centre on Park Road. “Dr Haytham Makki will talk about heart care and things that can hurt your heart. He will also cover Heart Failure and Atrial Fibrillation). There will be a Question and Answer session so here is the chance to raise and get information on anything that may be bothering you about your
heart,” said a HeartBeat Killarney news release issued to the Killarney Advertiser. “The purpose of these meetings is to raise public awareness about Heart Care and to allay any fears people may have around it. Dr Makki is looking forward to the meeting and to answering all your questions. Dr Makki has extensive experience in Coronary Interventions, ECHO, heart failure and assessment of patients with severe aortic stenosis.” Heartbeat Killarney will also running a blood pressure clinic on the evening from 730pm.
New tourism apps launched for Killarney Kerry Tourism Industry Federation has launched two new Apps for the Killarney area. The new tourism initiative, a digital treasure hunt has been undertaken by Kerry Tourism Industry Federation, the RDI Hub in Killorglin and Kerry County Council.
The project began at the end of last year and now two example Apps have been developed which will be rolled out in the Killarney area. The first is called Ciar’s Quest which is a digital treasure hunt using Augmented reality with a storyline around Ross Island and its wildlife. This is now operational.
The second app will be available at the end of the month and will feature the stage of the “Kerry Way” beginning at Muckross Abbey and along the lakeside route up to the back of Torc. This will have historical characters presented in augmented reality giving the history at various locations along the route.

Local businesses to get funding to increase online presence Several Killarney-based businesses will benefit from new funding that will allow them increase their online presence. New funding has been announced for Kerry retail businesses to expand their online offering and presence to customers at home and abroad, Deputy Government Chief Whip, Brendan Griffin TD, has said. Deputy Griffin was speaking after Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail, Damien English announced more than 200 retailers who have been approved for funding under the Online Retail Scheme (ORS) administered by Enterprise Ireland. This latest development will see 216 re-
tailers across all counties approved for funding of €9.29 million. The scheme is for retailers who already have an online presence and who have a physical store and is targeted at enhancing their online capability. “Many Irish companies have successfully made the digital transition in recent years and developed their online capability to sell their goods and services online. “Consumer habits have also changed in recent years and it was great for them to know that that when they went online, they had local options instead of just the large international retailers, particularly when the pandemic occurred,” Deputy Griffin said.
“Recipients from this latest call are based across all counties in Ireland and are from a number of sectors, including hardware, pharmacy, clothing and furniture. 72% of successful applicant companies are based outside of Dublin. “14 Kerry businesses have been successful in this round of the Online Retail Scheme. They will receive grants ranging from €10,000 to a maximum of €64,000. Recipients from this latest call are based across all counties in Ireland and are from a number of sectors, including hardware, pharmacy, clothing and furniture.” Local companies to get funding include the Aran Sweater Company, Kilkenny Group, Corcoran’s Furniture and Car-

pets, Horan’s Health Stores. Tim Jones Butchers and Walsh Brothers Shoes. “Nationally, since 2018 more than 700 projects from retailers based in Ireland have been approved for €28.3m in funding through the Government’s Online Retail Scheme. “We have seen how businesses benefited from this scheme throughout the pandemic, this funding will continue that revitalisation,” Deputy Griffin added.

Victoria Volkova: I want to teach children English
Viktoriia Volkova is a Ukrainian who arrived in Killarney three months ago. | By Natalya Krasnenkova She is a beautiful, nice and intelligent woman. At the time she reached Ireland with her teenage daughter and her mother, she had had covered a journey of 3,300 km from Kherson, occupied by the Russian military, to Killarney. She drove her car with her elderly mother, her daughter and a dog. The traveling trio finally made it to their destination and boarded the plane to Ireland. From the very beginning of the war the outskirts of the city of Kherson, in the south of Ukraine, was under constant shelling. Victoria, her daughter and her elderly mother had to move to her friends’ house because they had a basement. It served as a shelter from Russian missiles. “It was the beginning of March. There was no heating in the basement, so it was very cold. We brought blankets and warm things, a minimum supply of food, water and TV. We got to know last news from it. There were 13 of us in the basement. When the shooting stopped, we went out to get food, but the shops were mostly closed. We bought everything we could find, even chicken feet, which we could also cook in soup,” recalls Victoria. “All the time, while we were living in the basement, we hoped that the
Ukrainian army would be able to recapture our city. However, the Russian army firmly occupied Kherson, having established checkpoints and brought in bunch of military equipment, tried to set its administration (to this day, the city of Kherson is under the occupation of Russia). After a month spent in the basement, she realised that it was time to leave the city before it was too late. But the Russian army did not give civilians a ‘green corridor’. They decided to evacuate on their own. They left Kherson at the end of March in their car, joining a line with other cars through mined fields. Every minute there was a risk of blowing up a mine or being attacked from the air. Fortunately, the women reached a Ukrainian checkpoint. When Victoria saw the soldiers in Ukrainian uniforms, she understood that they had managed to escape from the encirclement. Then she cried for the first time. Victoria Volkova is a teacher of English and piano. The first thing she did in Killarney was to obtain registration and confirmation of her teacher’s diploma. She is one of the first Ukrainians who was able to confirm her diploma and registered with the Teaching Council of Ireland. Victoria is waiting for an opportunity to continue working as an English teacher in one of the schools in Killarney.
TEACHER: VictoriIa Volkova wants to teach children English.
“I see that not all Ukrainian children speak English well. Therefore, I will be glad to help them. Because only knowing the language can help Ukrainians fully integrate into Irish society,” says Victoria. Victoria currently works at Kerry ETB where she helps to organise English language courses for Ukrainians. Knowledge of Ukrainian, Russian and English enables Victoria to effectively organise the work at the language centre. One in five Ukrainian refugees, who have arrived in Ireland since the war broke out, have already found employment, while almost two thirds of
the remainder are actively looking for work. This is one of the principal findings of the inaugural survey of Ukrainian refugees carried out by Ukrainian Action In Ireland (UACT), a registered non-profit committed to supporting Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees. One of the biggest issues facing Ukrainian refugees in accessing language courses, with almost half of all respondents speaking little or no English and 63% experiencing a language barrier in their search for a job. More than half of Ukrainians are studying English by themselves using online resources. 40% of them are attending English classes in person.

Why did you start up Zenergy and why? Nicola, can you tell us what inspired you to start up Zenergy? Many years ago I suffered severe burnout from having three business’s to run and having four small kids all happening together. When conventional medicine failed me I started looking for other alternatives. I started researching nutrition for my chronic anxiety and fell into a whole new world. I must have read 50 books on nutrition and also saw a very interesting documentary on Netflix called fat, sick and nearly dead. It has been a long journey for me but nutrition is vitally important to keep my head above water. I really do believe there is massive healing in natural foods. Nutrition is only one piece of my jigsaw. I do mindfulness, yoga, tms and nutrition and the combination is working well at the moment. Was is difficult to get started with equipment etc.? I convinced my husband to go to Barcelona to see a juicer that I wanted to purchase and two week later it arrived from America. It was massive money to invest at the time but I was willing and determined to make a go of it. Zenergy is based in Killarney and we only do door to door deliveries to provide our customers with top class nutrition in a drink. Raw cold press juicing is a hard business and is very time consuming and very precise. It takes a huge amount of time making these juices but you can be guaranteed that they are what they say in the tin. What sets your product apart from others? We never pasteurize any of our juices because when you pasteurize a juice it is heated to a certain temperature which will kill off any of the bacteria that would spoil a juice but this also kills off the goodness that should be in juice. Juices these days are mostly pasteurized. Pasteurized juice give a longer shelf life of a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Juice should not sit on a shelf for weeks or months on end it needs to be made and consumed as soon as possible. I did the Food Academy program with the Kerry Enterprise board a couple of years ago and I was successful in getting into all the Supervalu‘s in Kerry. I did it for a couple of weeks and it nearly broke me, not financially but in spirit. I would spend all this time making these juices and would hate to see the way they looked on the shelf , compared to other juices but we weren’t comparing like with like. Pasteurized juices always look amazing they never separate as they have added stabilizers. A lot of juice companies also add water, artificial flavors , artificial colours or artificial preservatives to make juices look more appealing on the shelf. Our juices are just pure natural untreated Raw cold pressed juice that has nothing added and nothing taken away. It is so time consuming but it is a labor of love. I absolutely love when I get phone calls and emails emails from customers who have gone on the Juice Cleanse and it has helped them in some way. The cleanse give our customers a great start on their own health and healing journey. I really believe in the power of nutrition for a lot of health problems these days. My job really works for me now as
I work in Killarney mostly. I have a cafe in Killorglin with a fantastic team who have been with us for years. They are like part of our family. Patricia our manager does a fantastic job in running Zest from day today. I love working in Zest with the girls as we all get on so well. Our customers are great and have supported us in the worst times in business. I was lucky enough to trust Patricia to run Zest while I was able to put all my time into Zenergy in Killarney. We start juicing at 5am when our our deliveries arrive. They are thoroughly washed and prepared then our courier company collects at 6 PM to dispatch our boxes nationwide and offer next day deliveries. Can you explain the products and who it might benefit? The most popular Item in Zenergy is the three day juice cleanse. This is where people consume juice only for the three day period. Everybody experiences the cleanses differently. It is a very difficult three days but on the fourth day the benefits are clear to see and people feel that their energy is restored along with losing a few pounds. Their taste buds are reset after the fourth day and everything tastes really sweet, so this is the best time to cut out sugar and start a new way going forward. Most of our customers cleanse every two months just for a general reset and to recharge energy and nourish the body. Most people lose a good amount of weight but it is more about nourishing the body to function better father than losing weight. It is what you do after the cleanse that will make all the difference. We provide video demonstration on how to make breakfast super food bowls that will take minutes to make and taste amazing. I was absolutely thrilled to win the entrepreneur of the year award at the Connect Kerry women in business. I think you need a lot of drive passion and commitment in any business. It takes a lot of tears but if you really believe you have a great product eventually it will come right. I am passionate about juicing and absolutely love making a difference to peoples lives and health. Our newest functional juices are shark juice and charcoal lemonade. Shark juice is for someone who really needs a boost of minerals and vitamins. It contains Organics Spirulina which has an incredible amount of benefits. Our Charcoal lemonade is for a general detox. Charcoal latches on the toxins in the body and expels them. We do baby shark juices and unicorns juices for kids which are also flooded with goodness. They are ideal for picky eaters. Zenergy is more than a beverage , they are functional juices. You should feel a difference when consumed regularly.

George Ezra to ride shotgun in Killarney next year Chart topping musician George Ezra has announced extra Irish shows including the INEC Arena, Killarney next March. The shows are on the back of the sell-out success of his recently announced 3Arena and SSE Arena shows and support his new album Gold Rush Kid, which was released on 10 June via Columbia Records and has been top 10 in Ireland since release He will play in Killarney on March 10 next year. ‘Green Green Grass’, the first single from the album is an irresistibly joyful song about making the best of things, even when it might feel like the worst of things are afoot: “Green green grass, blue blue sky, you better throw a party on the day that I die.” “I was on holiday in St Lucia with a few friends at Christmas 2018, with two of my closest mates from home,” explains George. “We were in this beach bar, drinking homemade rum punch and Piton, the local lager, flip-flopping between the two, pissing about with three local guys who worked there. And this music started up, three streets back from the sea,” he said. “After about half an hour, I had to go see what it was. And there was a street party going on, with three different sound systems, people cooking in the street. I asked a woman what was going on and
she told me it was a funeral – for three people. They were celebrating three lives! I thought: that is not how we do this at home. And it’s really beautiful.” George debuted both songs to a rapturous reception at his recent intimate gigs in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. After two blockbuster albums – Wanted On Voyage (2014) and Staying At Tamara’s (2018), both of which reached number 1 and sold millions around the world, and the latter of which earned him his first number 1 single in ‘Shotgun’ and won him the 2019 Brit Award for British Male Solo Artist – it was time to return to heart and hearth, with an album written and produced entirely in London with longstanding collaborator Joel Pott.

Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
From the garden to the kitchen Whether it's dinners, salads or drinks – herbs can add flavour and colour to almost any meal. Even if you are not a top chef, some well-chosen herbs and edible flowers can make any meal special. Nasturtiums are great in salads, both the flowers and leaves are peppery to the taste. The seed pods can be used like capers and are delicious fried in butter with fish. Pansies and violas are often candied but can be added to sweet and savoury dishes. Calendula, known as poor man's saffron, has long been used to add a yellow colour to food. As an addition to a salad, it is tasty and colourful. Herbs are so versatile, with mint topping my list! Chop it up and add to natural yoghurt, some garlic, cayenne pepper and cumin and you have a delicious mint dip. Add to couscous to give it a fresh lift. Of course, with lime, it is the basis of a mojito! Mint comes in many forms, spearmint and peppermint are the old favourites but try chocolate mint, apple mint, strawberry and pineapple mint for subtle flavours. Bear in mind that mint can take over the garden, and perhaps grow it in a pot. Divide regularly to keep young tasty growth abundant. For me, the next most used herb would be parsley. I never seem to have enough. I prefer the flat-leaved parsley as it does not have such a rough texture, and a better flavour, in my opinion. Used in combination with coriander use it in salsas, Moroccan cooking and Mexican dishes. Coriander and parsley in scrambled eggs are delicious! Parsley likes damp shady conditions and is in danger of going to seed in this warm weather. Coriander, likewise, likes shade, but goes to seed easily, and is best sown at regular intervals. A real taste of summer is tarragon- I always forget about it until it finally shows itself quite a while after the winter. It is used in pickling, often with fennel or dill,
and is delicious in salad dressings. Tarragon and chicken are a match sublime! Tarragon likes deep rich, moist soil, and needs to be protected from slugs when it first appears. It also detests waterlogged soil. Tarragon, along with chervil and dill are wellknown 'French ‘fines herbs', which are often used together in light egg and fish dishes. Lovage is another favourite- it is not that popular here but is used extensively in France and Holland. It tastes like a combination of parsley and celery and is a great addition to soups and Italian sauces. Lovage grows into a large plant, about five feet tall, so give it space! Both it and fennel, are extremely hardy and are useful as shelter-giving plants. One herb which everyone associates with summer is basil… Who doesn't love the smell of it? Caprese salad is surely a summer treat. Many people ask me why they can't grow basil, but it is a difficult plant to keep going. If the weather was always as it has been these past few weeks we would be fine! Basil does not like rain, humidity or temperature fluctuations. When growing from seed it is prone to damping off, as well as mildew and rotting. Unfortunately, unless you have a warm dry conservatory or glasshouse, growing basil is not really an option… though we can hope this weather lasts all summer… Rosemary, sage and marjoram are easy herbs to grow, and a must if you enjoy Italian cuisine. To ensure sweetness of flavour, keep cutting your herbs, even if you are not using them. Often, once the plant gets woody, it tends towards bitterness. Basal cuttings can be taken in late summer from woody plants for rooting, they are generally very successful. Herbs such as parsley, chives and fennel can easily be split in early autumn or late spring.

National Cancer Screening Service Free Screening Programmes Cancer is one of the main causes of death in Ireland. If you have any concerns regarding cancer or have a family history of cancer or have symptoms that you are worried about, you should contact your family doctor (GP). Screening means checking your body for cancer before you have symptoms and the National Cancer Screening Service provides the following population based cancer screening programmes: • BreastCheck, the National Breast Screening Programme • CervicalCheck, the National Cervical Screening Programme • BowelScreen, the National Bowel Screening Programme Q: What’s the Aim of Screening Programmes? These programmes aim to reduce morbidity and mortality in the population through early detection of disease and treatment, both of which greatly improve health outcomes. A screening test is designed for populations of individuals who do not have any symptoms of disease. It aims to identify those with a risk marker for a disease and ensure early treatment. A screening test is not a diagnostic test, which is designed for individuals with symptoms of a disease or for those identified with a risk marker to assess whether they have it or to follow its progress. Q: How to I Access a Screening Programme? Screening programmes internationally and in Ireland are based on a call /recall system, where eligible populations are invited to take part and clinical services are provided for the further investigation and treatment of people identified as at risk of having or developing a disease.
BREASTCHECK
BreastCheck is the national breast screening programme. The aim of the programme is to find breast cancer early and to provide treatment of breast cancer in women who show no symptoms of the disease. Breast screening does not find all breast cancer. But screening has been proven to lower the number of women dying from breast cancer. The programme offers all women between the ages of 50 and 69 a mammogram (an x-ray of the breast) free of charge every 2 years. BreastCheck compile and maintain a
register of women eligible for screening. Your details should automatically be on the register. Contact BreastCheck on freephone 1800 45 45 55 for further information.
CERVICALCHECK
CervicalCheck is a national screening programme to prevent cervical cancer. The programme provides free cervical screening tests to people with a cervix between the ages of 25 and 65. A HPV cervical screening test is a simple procedure that only takes minutes. It is the most effective way to detect HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) and changes in the cells of the cervix. If you have any questions or concerns about the screening programme, contact CervicalCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55. If you have any concerns about cervical cancer, have a family history of cervical cancer or have symptoms of cervical cancer, you should contact your family doctor (GP). CervicalCheck will send invitation letters to anyone on the CervicalCheck register who is aged between 25 and 65. You should already be on the register if you: • Are between 25 and 65 and have a PPS number or • Have previously had a test through CervicalCheck • When you receive your invitation letter, you should contact a registered GP or nurse to make an appointment.
BOWELSCREEN
BowelScreen is the National Bowel Screening Programme which offers free bowel screening to people aged 60 to 69 every 2 years. Bowel screening aims to detect signs of bowel cancer at an early stage, where there are no symptoms. The test is free and is done by you at home. You need to be on the bowel screening register to be sent an invitation to receive a home screening test kit. BowelScreen puts together a register of people eligible for screening from details supplied by the Department of Social Protection, General Medical Services and private health insurance providers. However, some people are not included on any of these lists so if you haven’t received an invitation for bowel screening, you can check if you are on the register online or by calling Freephone 1800 45 45 55. Contact your GP if you have any symptoms of bowel cancer. Never ignore symptoms, even if you have had a recent normal screening result.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
Blind Tralee woman drives car A blind Tralee woman experienced the joy of driving a car for only the third in her life this week. Mairead O’Mahony, 39, has been blind all her life. In her younger years, she convinced her brother to allow her to drive a Jeep around fields on the family farm, but she has only ever driven a road car twice. On Tuesday week she participated in a special event organised by Vision Sports Ireland at Mondello Park. Born out of the National Council for the Blind’s strategy, 'Changing Perceptions 2021-2023' Vision Sports Ireland makes the dreams and aspirations of its members a reality. The track day, called Zero Limits, was organised in collaboration with Mayobased Sara McFadden, Ireland’s only visually impaired rally co-driver, who is a Sports Development Officer with Vision Sports Ireland. The morning sessions allow visually impaired drivers, with the help of an instructor, to drive road cars on the County Kildare track. For many of the younger participants, it is their first time ever driving a car. Those who fully or partially lost their sight later in life were able to regain a previously lost freedom on what is a very emotional day for participants and their families. Others, like Mairead, had never driven an

ordinary road car until Zero Limits made it a reality. This was her second time participating in Zero Limits, after entering the inaugural event in July 2021. Instructors used cars with dual-controls, similar to those used by driving schools and were on hand to take control should things start to go wrong. “It was amazing,” she said. “The instructor was very good. He described the road using a clock system so he was telling me things like three o’clock left and six o’clock right so I was able to get a good
feel for it. I was able to push the accelerator and let it rip on the long straights." Mairead is a fan of technology and cannot wait for the day that autonomous cars become mainstream. “All my life I was told I couldn’t do this or I couldn’t do that. I have a vision where something like Google Drive will let me programme the car and let me go wherever I want to go," she added. As an extra treat, rally drivers were invited to attend the afternoon session. They offered high-speed laps to the participants. It is their first time ever experienc-
Ireland’s newest research vessel the Tom Crean arrived in Irish waters this week Earlier this week the Tom Crean arrived at the Port of Galway before embarking on its first survey towards the end of July and then making its way to Dingle in advance of its official commissioning due to take place in Autumn 2022. Ireland's latest marine research vessel has been named the RV Tom Crean, after the renowned seaman and explorer from Kerry who undertook three ground-breaking expeditions to the Antarctic in the early years of the 20th Century. The RV Tom Crean which will be based in Galway after its commissioning will enable the Marine Institute to continue to
lead and support vital scientific surveys that contribute to Ireland's position as a leader in marine science. The research vessel will carry out a wide range of marine research activities including expanded fisheries surveys, seabed mapping and
marine spatial planning, climate change related research, environmental monitoring, deep water surveys, and support increased research in the Atlantic Ocean. “This has been an extremely successful project with the vessel arriving on budget
ing the thrill of a rally car. Kerry Motor Club members, father and son duo Jason and Mossie Costello, were two of many rally drivers who gave their time and their rally car freely for the enjoyment of the participants. They took turns driving their rally-prepared Ford Escort on the County Kildare track. Although Mairead was not partnered with one of the Tarbert-based drivers she was offered a passenger seat with another rally driver instead. “It was such an adrenaline rush,” she added, ”I was shouting go faster, go faster, it was a real feeling of liberation.” The 2022 event proved to be a huge success as 80 blind and vision impaired participants had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of dual-controlled road cars and became rally co-drivers alongside some of Ireland’s finest rally drivers. and on time into Irish Shores. We are delighted that Galway is the vessel's first stop in Irish waters ahead of its official launch and commissioning due to take place in Dingle, Kerry in Autumn. The new vessel will be used by the Marine Institute, other state agencies and universities to undertake critical work to support fisheries assessment, offshore renewable energy, marine spatial planning, marine protected areas and addressing the challenges of climate change,” said Dr Paul Connolly, CEO of the Marine Institute speaking about the vessel’s arrival into Irish Waters said: “After the official commissioning, the RV Tom Crean will be based in Galway, and it will greatly enhance our capacity to undertake collaborative research and acquire the data and knowledge essential to sustainably manage our ocean resources.”

New online map showcasing 130 walking trails in Kerry A new online map showcasing over 130 different walking trails in County Kerry has been launched by Kerry County Council. The Kerry Trails Map is an online interactive map for Kerry, which provides essential trail information for those who would like to explore the county’s numerous walks and trails. The map was developed in partnership with the South Kerry Development Partnership and North East and West Kerry Development and was funded through the support of the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. The project mapped 130 Kerry trails and offers over 270 options for walks throughout the county, and provides essential information including trail location, length, difficulty, duration, GPS coordinates, directions to the trailhead/ parking areas and other important information. ‘This is a really exciting showcase for what we have to offer here in Kerry,’ said the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn. ‘Given the popularity now of outdoor
pursuits including walking and hiking, it is wonderful to have such a useful and interactive resource being made available to those wanting to explore and enjoy the many walks and trails which are available all over the county,’ he said. Head of Tourism with Kerry County Council, Niamh O’Sullivan said that developing and promoting trails and walks around the county is an integral part of the County Kerry Tourism Strategy. ‘Kerry already has a well-established reputation for walking and hiking and this new map, which is so easy to use, will greatly complement the resources and information which is available to walkers from Kerry and beyond,’ she said. ‘I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Brian Coakley of Active Me who was involved in developing the map as well as SKDP and NEWKD and the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation who supported the initiative from the outset.’ The map can be downloaded for use offline and offers a 3D view of trails to enhance the user experience. Visit https://www.kerrycoco.ie/tourism/ kerry-trails-map/ to view and download the map and follow Kerry County Council on social media for updates.
The launch, at Jack’s Coastguard Restaurant wax hosted by Cromane’s own Tomás Hayes. He spoke about living near the sea. “The sea kept us going during the worst of COVID where taking a walk along the seashore, paddling in the sea or swimming was a great escape and continues to be so,” he said. “We have a wonderful tradition here in Cromane, a great resource both tourist and economically through our salmon, mussel and oyster fishery. “We are looking forward once again to showing off our beautiful village. He gave guests an insight of what to expect at the event, detailing the attractions and activities that will be taking place ‘with activities on Surf and Turf, Maritime Walks, Water Trampolining, Seafaris, and An Bord Iascaigh Mhara’s Aquaculture Remote Classroom Project. Tomás added: “The support and en-
couragement received from local business and people towards the festival is overwhelming and humbling not to mention the support received from The Department of Agriculture Food and The Marine, Kerry County Council, Failte Ireland and Cara Credit Union, and the committee would like to thank each and everyone of you.” Aine Lisa Shannon from BIM and Aquaculture Remote Classroom Project spoke passionately and enthusiastically on her love of all things maritime. ‘Aquaculture is the future’ she said: “We have tied in The Arc Project with Cromane Seafest so we will be visiting local schools and secondary schools in the area to teach all the kids about aquaculture at the start of September - and they can see first-hand what it’s all about at Cromane Seafest.” The Seafest Committee Crew, made up of local people from different age groups, have put together a festival celebrating Cromane’s finest local seafood, the freshest and finest Cromane Mussels, Oysters and Salmon.

25kg of litter cleared from Fenit beach in one hour Volunteers from all over Kerry came out on Saturday to take part in Clean Coasts and Fáilte Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way Community Clean-ups of Fenit Beach. These events were created by Clean Coasts as part of their summertime Enjoy and Protect campaign with support from Fáilte Ireland. The events’ overall aim was to raise
awareness to keeping marine and wildlife spaces clean for locals and tourists alike to enjoy and admire. The 26 volunteers removed four bags approximately 25 kg - of marine litter in one hour. “With the summer in full swing, the Wild Atlantic Way is a prime route for both Irish and international tourists alike to explore and with the sunny weather there is no better place to explore in
the west than the glorious beaches and coastal landscapes. We are proud of our partnership with Fáilte Ireland for this series of community clean-ups where we and participants across all seven of our events ensured that these popular west coast bathing spots were free of litter for all to enjoy,” said Clean Coasts Coastal Communities Manager Sinead McCoy.

Celebrity judges Anna Daly and Aidan O’Mahony had a tough challenge whittling down the ten finalists. “What a day! Killarney must be the most picturesque racecourse in Ireland. I’m wearing a dress I wore to my son’s christening and its lovely to be able to get another wear out of it. I’m so looking forward to my trip to Paris. Thanks so much to Anna and Adian and all at Dawn Milk – we were treated like royalty,” she said. In the gent’s category Niall Crowley from
Kilcummin came out on top. “What an honour to be chosen as the Dawn Milk Best Dressed Gent at Killarney Races. I just arrived back from Dubai on Monday where I have been living for the past five years, this has made for a fantastic start to my summer at home with family and friends. I got my suit tailor made in Dubai for the occasion and I'm delighted that it has all paid off. I'm a teacher working in Dubai and it's great to be home for the summer,” he said.

In Loving Memory of Owen Doherty Barleymount East, Killarney who died on 23rd July 2017.
As we remember Mary on her first anniversary we want to thank our family, friends and neighbours for their love and support both at the time of her funeral and during the past year.
Life goes on we know that’s true But it’s not the same since we lost you We keep your memories one by one The things you said the things you’ve done.
As each day dawns we think of you As each night falls we pray for you And throughout our lives no matter where In our heart you are always there.
Along the road to yesterday That leads me straight to you Are memories of happy days Together we once knew.
They bring a smile & many a tear We always wish that you were here In God’s care you rest above And in our hearts you rest with love
We miss your smile, your joking ways We miss the things you used to say And when old times we do recall It’s then we miss you most of all.
Always remembered by your son Florence.
Our sincere thanks to everyone that came to the house, attended the funeral home, attended the funeral mass or watched it online, and to everyone that stood by the roadside as a mark of respect for Mary as she journeyed to her final resting place in Aghadoe.

Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

Kerry on the brink of long-awaited All-Ireland glory | By Adam Moynihan

ALL-IRELAND FINAL
____________________________________________________________________
Kerry v Galway Sunday at 3.30pm Croke Park Eight years without an All-Ireland is little more than a short break between courses for most diners. For Kerry, it’s a famine. Since The Kingdom’s first All-Ireland triumph in 1903 (played in 1905), their longest barren spell was the 10-year period from 1987 to 1996. The second longest was from 1915 to 1923 (nine years), and the current run of seven (going on eight) years without an All-Ireland is the third worst. Non-Kerry readers might roll their eyes at those statistics. But the nature of the Kerry football psyche means that the appetite for All-Ireland glory is currently just as great – if not greater - than it is in any other county in Ireland (regardless of how long the wait has been for them or for us). After a run of heart-breaking defeats, this iteration of the Kerry team is now on the cusp. 70 minutes more. Famine or feast.
FAVOURITES
As they have been for every game so far this season, Kerry are favourites to beat Galway on Sunday. Considering the way the Dublin game played out, defeating their greatest rivals in such an intense battle, perhaps that stands to reason. Galway have impressed too, however, and their attack is more than strong
enough to cause Kerry problems. Burly full-forward Damien Comer is a cert for an All-Star and he will be flanked on either side by the skilful duo of Shane Walsh and Rob Finnerty. The all-action midfield pairing of Paul Conroy and Cillian McDaid will also take some stopping. Speaking to reporters last week, manager Pádraic Joyce pointed out that Galway were also underdogs the last time they won an All-Ireland: the 2001 final against Meath, a match in which Joyce himself played.
INJURY
As for Kerry, they have a significant injury concern in the shape of influential wing back Gavin White. The Crokes man was forced off with a knee injury in the latter stages of the semi-final victory over Dublin. Last Thursday Jack O’Connor revealed that Kerry were waiting for a report on a scan and at that juncture White was “doubtful”. While the results of that report have not been made public, and O’Connor indicated that he would be giving White every opportunity to recover in time, the Killarney Advertiser understands that the pacey No. 7 is not expected to feature. White’s absence could open the door for former captain Paul Murphy to regain his place in the team. Murphy was the first back off the bench in each of Kerry’s two previous games. O’Connor is likely to release his starting 15 and substitutes tonight (Friday) at 8pm.

Five things I learned at the Kerry team’s press day Adam Moynihan was at the Gleneagle Hotel as manager Jack O’Connor, selectors Mike Quirke and Diarmuid Murphy, and centre back Tadhg Morley spoke to the media ahead of the All-Ireland final. Here’s what he discovered. 1. They returned to Earth quickly after the Dublin game You could forgive the players for lingering up in the clouds for a few days after that monumental win a fortnight ago. In fact, manager Jack O’Connor admitted that it wouldn’t be easy to ground his players following that high. Tadhg Morley felt the group managed to do just that, however. And quite quickly, too. “There was the initial release of emotion at the final whistle the last day [against Dublin] but once we came into the dressing room then we calmed things down,” the Templenoe man said. “We spoke about Mayo beating the Dubs last year and then not finishing out the job. “It was a quick turnaround but Jack and the lads spoke very well. Jack has so much experience. Straight after the match he knew what to say to bring us back down to earth. Us talking to Seánie more about his penalty than his free probably helped as well!” Mike Quirke admitted that management were concerned that last Wednesday’s training session – the team’s first after the Dublin match – would be “a bit down”. But it wasn’t. “That’s a testament to the attitude the players are bringing,” the Rahillys man said. 2. The third quarter is a concern “We have plenty of holes to pick in the performance [in the semi-final],” O’Connor insisted. “Plenty of holes. Because our performance across the four quarters wasn’t even enough to give you confidence going into a final. I thought our third quarter was poor. We left Dublin back into it.” Diarmuid Murphy agreed. “In some of the games we haven’t started the second half well. You try to get to the bottom of it, see are there any recurring themes that are emerging, tackle it, and see if we can do better the next day.” 3. The team has placed an emphasis on mental toughness “When we got a few body blows in that
Dublin game, it would have been very for us to capitulate,” O’Connor reflected. “But there was a grim determination to hang in there. I think a lot of that is probably down to the work Tony (Griffin) has done with the boys.” Morley said that performance coach Griffin has made a “huge difference” since coming on board. “The last few years we never felt we were a million miles away from winning the All-Ireland, even though when you don’t win it, you are. We’re only looking for a couple of small percentages here and there. That was a big one, the mental side of the game. The mind is an amazing thing. “A big thing Tony and Paddy spoke about, and we spoke about it as a group ourselves: when the Dubs do have that
purple patch or we’re coming down the stretch and it’s really hard, that you don’t shell up, that you don't shy away from it, that you're looking for the ball every single time. “That was as big thing for us and you really saw it the last day. A few leaders really stood up and everybody followed through then.” 4. Jack has the human touch After he stepped away from the fold, Shane Enright said he felt he had been left in the dark by Peter Keane. A lack of communication. It appears as though the current manager is taking a different approach. “In fairness to Jack, he’s a very good man manager,” Morley said. “[When he was appointed] he went around
and met all the players around Kerry, which is a really good touch I thought. It showed a good progression and good management skills.” “One of his greatest strengths is that he’s constantly talking to players,” Quirke added. “There are some managers who don’t do that. His communication with players is as good as I’ve ever come across. The players know that they can [talk to him]. He’s very open to that kind of stuff. That side of things is very important, that players understand that there’s a personal connection there.” 5. The team are avoiding ‘loose talk’ Unsurprisingly, some Kerry fans are anticipating an easy win. The Kerry squad are avoiding that kind of rhetoric like the plague. “That’s why you have to insulate the players as much as possible from the public,” the manager explained. “This is my eighth or ninth final. I know the pitfalls that are there. Players are in a totally different bubble to supporters. Supporters see All-Ireland finals as occasions with razzmatazz and a great atmosphere and all the rest of it, whereas the players have to divorce themselves, most of the time, from that. They have to understand this is about performing on the big day.” “We just focus on ourselves and our own jobs and our own training,” Morley said. “Lads stay away from all that kind of talk - that loose kind of talk. We just focus in on what we're trying to do for the Galway game.” AVOIDING THE PITFALLS: Jack O'Connor says the players need to be insulated from the public in the build up to the big match. MOYNIHAN: It won’t be an easy victory Eamonn Fitzgerald chats to former Kerry captain Séamus Moynihan about Sunday’s All-Ireland final Kerry and Galway last met in an All-Ireland final in 2000 and Kerry won that millennium final in a replay. A feature of that game was the battle between Kerry full back Séamus Moynihan and Galway’s full forward, the current senior manager Pádraic Joyce. These two men were, and are, great personal friends, who soldiered together to win two Sigerson medals with IT Tralee (now MTU). Jim McGuiness and James Fleming were also on those teams. No better man than Séamus, then, to assess Kerry’s chances of lifting the Sam
Maguire on Sunday afternoon. Séamo, or The Pony to his friends, knows all about the highs and lows of Kerry football. I saw him graduate through the juvenile ranks with Glenflesk, the Hogan Cup with the Sem and then he was sprung from the bench in that amazing 1992 Munster final. Clare toppled Kerry and that is a rarity. It was time for the old guard to fold the tent. Centenary captain Ambrose O’Donovan was substituted at midfield for Séamus Moynihan. He grabbed the opportunity and henceforth he was the first name that so many
Kerry selection committees pencilled in when picking the teams. ‘Play Anywhere Séamus’: he didn’t worry about the number on his back. All he wanted was to serve, and serve he did by winning four All-Irelands, three AllStars and a Footballer of the Year award. But, as he says himself, he was also on so many losing Kerry teams. “There were five years when we won nothing,” he reflects. I have no doubt that versatility cost him several All-Stars. When Kerry needed someone to man the bearna baol, selec-
tors were unanimous. Put in Moynihan. He won’t leave Kerry down. First off, I ask Séamus about the vacant U20 manager’s job. Declan O’Sullivan has stepped down due to his work commitments with Liebherr which involves European travel. Moynihan would be a very popular choice. Is he up for it? “That’s a matter for the County Board, Éamonn,” he says. “I have enough on my plate at the moment with different teams in my club and with East Kerry in the County Championship.” And so to the 2000 All-Ireland final. Joyce was the key man for Galway; contain him and you were on the road to victory. The teams drew 0-14 all and Galway felt unlucky not to have won it, but in the replay Kerry won 0-17 to 1-10.

22.07.2022 What was it like marking their best player and a good friend? “It wasn’t the best scenario marking my great friend, but we set aside our friendship for those 70 minutes. We respected each other. It was tough of course, because Pádraic was a great player and central to the Galway team. He was very competitive and wanted to win. He was a great team man. “We gave it everything and when the game was over we shook hands and we went upstairs [to the players’ lounge]. I joined his father and other family members enjoying a drink together and renewing our friendship, as it should be.” What can Kerry expect from this Joyce-managed team on Sunday? “A huge battle and anyone who expects an easy victory for Kerry is not dealing with reality. Players know that matches at this level are not easily won. Pádraic set out his plans when he was appointed as manager of Galway and everything was geared not just to compete at the highest level, but to win the All-Ireland within the three-year spell. “He’s a winner and will be conveying that winning mentality to the team on Sunday. He will have Galway playing very defensively, blocking out Kerry from scoring. You saw that yourself against Derry when they had 13 men behind the ball when needed. Kerry will have to cope with that. “Don’t forget that it’s not all out attack by Kerry either. Jack has them set up defensively and they have conceded only three goals. That’s massive defence. The wing forwards will be tracking back and the midfielders and sure Paudie will be defending everywhere.” I agree fully with that strategy and since Jack solidified 3 and 6, Kerry have been magnificent. Add in Paddy Tally’s teaching how to defend without fouling as typified against Dublin, especially in that tense final 20 minutes. Kerry were so disciplined. I am very happy with the Kerry defence and opted for Kerry to win this All-Ireland after two games in the league campaign. The potential is there, but I have some sobering caveats, that could prevent Sam coming to Kerry. These include their poor record in scoring goals, cards of any colour, unforeseen injuries to key players, starting without Gavin White, and how quickly the selectors move to replace players who are off their best in this match. They dallied too long against Dublin when Geaney and O’Brien were not igniting. Use the strong bench earlier. ”Yes, I too am concerned about our lack of goals,” Moynihan says. “Both teams have run up big scores; Galway have something like 11-82. We match them in points, but can’t touch Galway in goals scored. That’s a worry.” Let’s hope the green flags are raised on Sunday. Kerry will need at least one

goal and possibly two.
GAVIN WHITE
As for injuries, everywhere I go, worried supporters ask me if Gavin White will be fit to start. It is a bit like asking will the heatwave last? The answer early this week was “highly unlikely” but that can change by Sunday. Rain in Croker and White starting? Injuries are an occupational hazard for sportspeople and I will be back to that side of sport in future editions. I expect David Clifford and Séanie O’Shea to get All-Stars. If Kerry win and the following players play very well in the final, they will get one too: Jason Foley, Tom O’Sullivan, Tadhg Morley, Paudie Clifford, and Gavin White. The latter was a shoo-in last year until they were ambushed by Tyrone and didn’t get to the final. Last word to Séamus. Kerry to win in a fast open game of football, I expect? “If things go right on the day I go for Kerry, but it will be hard earned. Also you look at the modern game. Both teams will play it very tight. Stop the opponents’ surge. Be defensive, but don’t foul, turnover, counter-attack and score yourself.” To which I add: you need the right player in the correct position to pull the trigger. Therefore, David and Seánie must always be inside the opposition 45. Even they won’t score from midfield. For me it is Kerry, if Gavin White plays. I
expect he will. If not, I expect Paul Murphy to slot in directly. That move would be least disruptive to Kerry’s plans. The fall-back would be Dan O’Donoghue in at corner back, releasing Graham O’Sullivan for the wing. It is also time for Diarmuid O’Connor to show what he is capable of. The seven-year itch is frustrating. Eight years is unthinkable.
FANTASTIC FOSSA
Imagine the scene at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Monday evening next. If Kerry win, Fossa, the small little parish beside Killarney town, will not alone boast the Clifford brothers as champions with the Sam Maguire, but they will also give due recognition to the newly crowned world champion runner, Niamh O’Sullivan. She won three gold medals in the Masters Games in Finland in the 10k road race and the Ballydowney star topped it off with a fourth medal (bronze). Niamh is the daughter of Dermot Ivo and the late Kay O’Sullivan. She is no overnight success and has featured in this column as a regular winner all through her splendid running career. Over to you David and Paudie. Niamh has celebrated a significant birthday and even your combined ages are well less than than hers.
MNÁ NA RÍOCHTA
And it may not end at that for Fossa.
On Sunday, July 31 two more All-Ireland football medals may come to the parish. Erica McGlynn and Anna Clifford are on the Kerry panel for the LGFA final in Croke Park versus Meath. Some achievement for such a small parish. Of course, Fr Niall Geaney PP in Fossa, coming from the famous sports family of Mary and Dave, was a very skilful and wily corner forward for De La Salle College, Waterford. He wouldn’t reveal that of course. Modesty is in the Geaney DNA. So, too, is class and versatility, be it camogie, basketball, football, golf, badminton or hockey at international level. Mná na Ríochta abú. Kerry are back in the final for the first time since 2012 after defeating fancied Mayo 4-10 to 0-13 last weekend. It was a special day for Kayleigh Cronin. The brilliant Dr Crokes full back was presented with her award after the game as Kerry’s best player. That was no surprise as she has been outstanding all year. Also prominent was the long-serving Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh. She deserves this All-Ireland medal for her outstanding contribution to Kerry over many years. I am also delighted for managers Declan Quill and Darragh Long, who had to fight their corner for playing facilities and have guided the ladies to the Division 2 league title. The All-Ireland would be a fitting end to the season.

Brilliant Kerry book spot in All-Ireland final ALL-IRELAND SFC SEMI-FINAL __________________________________________________
Kerry 4-10 | Mayo 0-13 CROKE PARK
They were considered rank outsiders at the start of the season but the Kerry ladies are now just 60 minutes away from All-Ireland glory for the first time since 1993. The Kingdom dominated Saturday’s semi-final against Mayo as first-half goals by Síofra O’Shea (two) and Aishling O’Connell sent them on their way. Darragh Long and Declan Quill’s side led by seven points at the break (3-6 to 0-8) and an assured second-half performance eventually saw them run out nine-point winners. Paris McCar-
thy’s 43rd minute goal and five points from the irrepressible Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh were significant, but overall it was a strong team display from start to finish. With Ciara Butler commanding in goal, Laoch na hImeartha Kayleigh Cronin and Emma Costello strong at the back, and Cáit Lynch and Niamh Carmody pulling the strings offensively, the girls in gold were certainly good value for their win. Defending champions Meath await in the final, which takes place on July 31 in Croke Park. Kerry have already upset the odds so far this year. Can they go one step further on Sunday week and end their 29-year famine?

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT
Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues
Cool heads will win the day
The build-up has been shorter than usual but All-Ireland final week never really changes much. The bunting goes up, the Millfield and adidas and O’Neills jerseys come down from the attic, and all the talk is of tickets and Iarnród Éireann. I’m frankly flattered by the amount of messages I’ve received from fans looking for match tickets. I don’t know what kind of pull ye think I have, lads. I’m lucky they’re leaving me in the gate! Hopefully more are starting to surface now we’re coming to the weekend and as many Kerry fans as possible get sorted. Things might be condensed in 2022 with the split season but it seems like a long time ago now since Kerry’s campaign kicked off on January 30. It was a cold and miserable day up in Newbridge and the game ended in a draw - an inauspicious start (possibly the team’s dodgiest performance all year, alongside Tyrone at home) – but thankfully things have improved drastically in the
intervening months. League title. Munster Championship. Safe passage through the All-Ireland series. You really couldn’t fault Kerry this year even if you wanted to. And of course no Kerry fan would ever want to do that. I can only speak for myself but I feel like I have a lot of grá for this current crop of Kerry players. I suppose this can be attributed to a few factors. Firstly, this era – let’s call it the Cliffy Era for want of a more team-centric name – has coincided almost exactly with my own career as a journalist. I’ve been covering the Kerry team since 2018, when Clifford made his senior debut, and I’ve attended a good deal of their games over the past four years or so.
But familiarity can breed contempt, so seeing a lot of them doesn’t quite explain the affinity. I think a lot of it comes down to the adversity they have faced over that time period, and the way they have responded to that adversity. That drawn game in 2019. Cork in 2020. Tyrone last year. These were horrible moments that must have hit them all incredibly hard. But they took it all on the chin and conducted themselves really admirably. No complaints. No blame game. Get back to Currans and come back stronger. I have no doubt that the team will get unreal support from everyone in green and gold on Sunday. They fully deserve it. They have been a credit to the jersey up to this point. As for the match itself, I’m confident that Kerry will come out the right side of it. (For a second there I considered the ‘yerra’ approach but I wouldn’t be much of a traditionalist. And a lot of good ‘yerra’ has done us in recent years…)
Make no mistake: Galway are a good team. They have weapons that can hurt Jack O’Connor’s side and this is anything but a foregone conclusion. I would also have some niggling concerns about the form of some starters from No. 8 up. Going by the last game, the midfielders and the half forwards in particular need to up it. No better time to do it than on All-Ireland final day. I actually think that, even more so than usual, the team that plays the last 20 minutes or so will be more important than the one that starts. With that in mind, the strength of Kerry’s bench gives me cause for optimism. Ultimately, though, I just think Kerry are a better team than Galway, and are playing better football. The biggest potential pitfall is Kerry not approaching the match with the right mindset, or reacting poorly to a period of adversity during the match. Going by their attitude so far this season, especially in the Dublin game, I don’t believe the players will be found wanting when it comes to mental toughness. Not this time. The psychological side of things has evidently been a real priority for them under the new management team. If they turn up and stick to the plan, if they are disciplined and calm, I don’t think Galway will be able to live with them. Cool heads will win the day. Good luck to all involved.

Killarney Legion GAA SENIOR MENS UPDATE: A late Conor Keane goal proved to be the difference as Legion defeated Dr Crokes in a highly entertaining East Kerry Superleague Final played in idyllic conditions on the lush carpet of Fitzgerald Stadium. LADIES UPDATE: Our U14 and U16 Ladies teams have both qualified for their respective County League finals. The 14s travelled to Finuge and came away with a hard earned win over the home team, Finuge/St Senans on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-03. Opposition, time, date and venue all to be confirmed. The U16s travelled to Gallarus for the second time in the competition, this time for the semi-final. Having drawn their previous encounter another tight battle was envisaged and so it ensued. A real ding dong affair saw us ahead at the full time whistle by 3-16 to 4-8. Well done to both teams and best of luck in the finals. JUVENILE BOYS: A good week for our U15 White team who have qualified for the Division 5 East Kerry Final. They were in Listry on Wednesday evening and battled back from nine points down to earn a draw. That draw qualified them for the semi-final where they faced Kenmare/ Kilgarvan in Kenmare on Saturday. Another titanic battle and we came out on the right side of the result, a one point win, 3-8 to 2-10. The old adage "goals win games" could definitely apply to our U17
Boys who captured the East Kerry Division 3 against Gneeveguilla in Barradubh Community Field last week.
Spa GAA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RD 1: Spa play Dingle in Rd1 of the Senior Club on August 6 (7pm, Strand Rd). DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE DIVISION 2 SHIELD FINAL: Spa 1-7 Kilcummin 1-11. SPA CILL AIRNE FLEADH: Well done to everyone involved from Spa GAA club, especially dance mentors Triona and Mairead Mangan. Dr Crokes GAA EAST KERRY SUPERLEAGUE FINAL: Dr Crokes 2-12 Legion 3-10. A disappointing end to a highly entertaining local derby played in beautiful conditions on Friday evening. We got off to a good start, leading by 4 points to 2 points after 10 minutes of play. A Legion goal after 20 minutes was quickly counteracted with a Daithi Casey goal down the other end of the field. Four legion points without response meant that we trailed by one at the short whistle, 1-7 to 1-8. Goals were quicky swapped once again after 4 minutes of the second half after a David Shaw goal was followed by a legion goal. We worked well to hold our lead for much of the second half until we conceded an unlucky goal with 62 minutes on the clock. This concluding goal proved costly. U15 EAST KERRY FINAL: Dr Crokes 5-4 Rathmore 1-17. Our U15 boys staged a thrilling comeback in the East Kerry Div 2 Final on Thursday last. They ultimately
came up short by 2 points against an excellent Rathmore team played in splendid conditions in the magnificent Fitzgerald Stadium. The boys showed brilliant character but were beaten by a better team on the night in a fine sporting open game of football. Thanks to Der Brosnan of the Fitzgerald Stadium, Sean O’Keeffe and team from the East Kerry Board for the excellent organisation on the night and to James Brosnan referee and his officials.
Fossa GAA KERRY: All roads lead to Croke Park this Sunday as the Kerry senior men play Galway in this year's All-Ireland Football Final. The club wishes the very best of luck to the players, management and the two Fossa men Paudie and David Clifford. Best of luck men. Huge congratulations to the management and players especially Fossa's Erica McGlynn and Anna Clifford. Nathan is the second player from the club to win this event after Eoin O’Riordan Looney did so back in 2019. Kilcummin KILCUMMIN LOOKING GOOD: With the village, the park and surrounding areas benefiting from wonderful sunshine and heat, every corner appears in full bloom. With the impending arrival of the Tidy Towns adjudicator, expected over the next few weeks we would ask all householders to make a special effort on road side outside their own house to ensure it is presented at its very best. Please ensure if you are a dog owner that you take on your responsibilities associated with dog fouling on footpaths and park.We have to express our sincere gratitude and compliment artist, Martin Carey for the excellent art work on the snake's and Ladders and the "Failte" lettering within the park. Also I think all would agree that his artwork, on the side of each flower container in the Village is a wonderful addition and embellishment to the overall look of the village. Don't forget to get out and visit the park which is now in full bloom. Maybe have a game on the life size snakes and ladders, hoping you get more ladders than snakes!
