Direct Provision Is Harmful And Unfair Words: Adam Moynihan

The controversial issue of direct provision has been dominating national news lately but this isn’t just something that’s happening above in Dublin, or Limerick, or Mosney. It’s happening out the Park Road. It’s happening in Deerpark. It’s happening just around the corner from our office here, down New Road. We see those affected by it every single day. Direct provision is the process of housing asylum seekers while their applications to stay in Ireland are being processed. People are placed in shared accommodation in residential institutions and are given three set meals a day. They have no right to cook for themselves. Up until February of this year, asylum seekers were also prohibited from working. Although they can now technically seek employment, the current interim laws are restrictive: they can only apply for jobs in certain industries that pay at least €30k a year. Adult asylum seekers currently live off €21.60 a week. Six months of free accommodation and food might not sound like a bad deal but, unfortunately, six months turns, on average, into three years. Many have spent up to 12 years in direct provision. Physical and mental health issues among residents are very common - asylum seekers are five times more likely to experience mental health problems and psychiatric conditions. Once again, Ireland is lagging behind other wealthy nations who deal with asylum seekers in a far more respectful manner. As an emigrant nation, how can we

A group of protesters outside Linden House in December. Pic: Don MacMonagle.

treat immigrants so poorly? Our ancestors were forced to leave Ireland in search of a better life. How can we be so cold to others facing the same predicament? We baulk at stories of Irish people experiencing discrimination in Australia. When an illegal Irishman or woman gets deported from the States, there’s uproar. We dismiss Donald Trump’s immigration policy as explicitly racist.

As an emigrant nation, how can we treat immigrants so poorly? Imagine if an Irish person travelled abroad to work and was treated the same way asylum seekers are treated here… If even one Irish citizen was kept for years in basic accommodation and forced to live off €21 a week with no prospect of getting a job, we’d be marching on the streets. There are over 5,000 people dealing with these exact circumstances in Ireland. A quarter of them are under 17. Some of them are just down the road. There is a distinct lack of understanding and compassion for these asylum seekers in our society. In fact, when some of

them were relocated to Linden House as recently as last year, a number of locals protested their arrival. They held placards saying “Our own must come first”. The homeless should get priority, they said. Homelessness is a terrible problem, but it shouldn’t be a case of either or. Everyone is entitled to human rights. At the time, people said, “They shouldn’t put a load of men down by the school.” But they would be fine with putting homeless Irish men there? In reality, what they were saying was, “They shouldn’t put a load of black and brown men down by the school.”

It was xenophobia and racism disguised as compassion for the homeless. To those who say we should “look after our own”, these refugees are our own. They’re the same as us and they have no more or less of a right to a safe, happy and prosperous life than we do. Although it may have been created in good faith, direct provision is harmful and unfair and it needs to be overhauled. We like to market ourselves as the Land of a Thousand Welcomes, especially here in Killarney. Is that a true reflection of our society, or does it only apply to wealthy, white tourists?

Brave Louise Recovering In Spain Brave Killarney girl Louise Lynch is making a steady recovery in Spain following a devastating car crash that left her with severe internal, cranial and abdominal injuries, as well as many fractured bones. Louise was in intensive care for five weeks and confined to bed for over three months but she is now up and walking, to the delight of friends, family and the entire community of Killarney. She will remain in Spain for the next three months of her recovery. Shortly after the accident, Louise’s family flew out to Spain to be by her side in the Infanta Cristina Hospital in Badajoz. Her father, Séamus, is originally from Milltown/Castlemaine and her mother, Nora (née Buckley), grew up in Radrinagh in Spa. Her brother, James, did his Leaving this year in St Brendan’s College while her sister, Marie, is studying nursing in UCC.

Louise has been described by friends as being a very energetic person with a great of humour. She has always been very active in her community and has lined out for the Spa ladies in football. She is also a talented musician and has represented Spa in Scór na nÓg. She had been teaching English to primary school students in Badajoz at the time of her accident. To help cover some of the costs of Louise’s treatment, friends and family have organised a dinner ball charity night which will take place in the Killarney Oaks Hotel on Saturday, June 30 in the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Tickets will cost €50. Black tie is optional. To donate an item for the auction or for the raffle, please contact Patrick on 0044 7538 877 502 or patrick_lynch@rocketmail.com. Loreto ‘Tick Kit’ Kids Are Community Champions

This week the enterprsing pupils at Loreto National School won the Community Champions Award for their Tick Kit project at the Junior Entrepreneur Project Showcase Day in the RDS in Dublin. “Winning a national prize is a huge achievement and this is a proud day for Loreto,” said Principal Mary O’Sullivan. “Great credit is due to 5th and 6th class and their teacher Mr Looney for all their hard work with the Junior Entrepreneur Programme. The whole

process was a wonderful experience for the children in how to develop a business, empowering young people to turn ideas into reality.” The idea originated when 6th class pupil Ali O’Donoghue was bitten by a tick and discovered what little information was available to treat tick bites. She and her classmates researched the topic and came up with the idea of the Tick Kit. The Junior Entrepreneur is all about working as a team and this was a

great team effort. Every child in 5th and 6th class was involved in making the Tick Kits and was well able to explain the product and sell it. As part of the project, the students explained what their product was all about. “The Tick Kit will ensure that each of us is more aware of what a tick is; how to remove it safely and also teach others while, as entrepreneurs, hopefully making a profit. It would be useful on walks, runs and days out. It can be used by people and on pets and it only costs €8.” The innovative Tick Kit comes in a small plastic container and it contains two tick twisters, two circle plasters, two anti-septic wipes, a pair a rubber gloves and instructions on the inside of the lid. The children made a presentation to the Muckross Community Association public meeting on Lyme Disease. People were very interested to note that the correct way to remove a tick safely is to use a tick twister. 480 schools took part in the Junior Entrepreneur Programme and 160 schools were represented in the RDS. School representativeshave said how proud they are of the pupils,

Con & Roisín To Scale Kilimanjaro For Charity In two weeks’ time, intrepid adventurers Roisín Lucey and Con O’Mahony will climb Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m) in Tanzania. The pair are funding every bit of the trip themselves but they also decided to raise some money for a charity whose work is based in the area. Con and Roisín chose Bóthar because donating livestock to third world countries is a very effective way of providing aid. “I also love cows,” Con explains. “So far we’ve set up a GoFundMe page, Roisín has organised a bake sale in her school in Tipperary and she’s also organising a bake sale at her house on the Tralee Road (Knockeendubh) at 10am this Saturday morning before the Munster final,” Con says. “It’ll be an ideal way to stock up on buns, cakes, ham sandwiches for the day out in Cork!” The following week, on Saturday, June 30, they’ll finish off with their final fundraiser in Scotts Beer Garden at 9pm. Con and Scotts Lakers star Pádraig Lucey

who were handled media interviews, queries and sales on their stand with aplomb. Loreto NS scooped the Community Champions Award, one of nine awards up for grabs on the day. The school expressed their gratitude to David Rea, producer of Celtic Steps, who visited the children and gave them great advice about setting up a business, their secretary Margaret, their SNA Noreen and the parents who also gave great help and support. “It has been a great learning experience for the children in how to develop a business,” Principal O’Sullivan said. “They have shown initiative and learned skills of teamwork and co-operation. Looking to the future we are very grateful to parents who have come on board to market the Tick Kit. It will be for sale locally with profits going to the school. “Congratulations again to Mr Looney and 5th and 6th class. It is a great achievement and a proud day for them and for all of us in Loreto.” For more information please contact Scoil Bhríde Loreto on 064 66 32484. For orders, call Geraldine McGlynn on 086 6772174.

will be selling raffle tickets on the night and whoever’s name gets pulled out of the hat will be shaving their heads. “We’re flying out the following week and hope to have reached the summit on Thursday, July 12 at 6pm,” Con says. “Training has been going well up Carrauntoohill, Mangerton and Cardiac Hill but altitude sickness will be the biggest challenge. We’re climbing the Marangu ‘Coca Cola’ Route which has the lowest success rate but there’s an acclimatisation day on the 6th day of climbing which will hopefully get us over the line!”

Sweet Win For Lily At Kieran Meets The Tick Kit Kids AIMS Awards

The Chatroom

We were very excited this week in the office when Kieran was invited up to Loreto National School to chat to Principal Mary O’Sullivan, teacher Mr Edward Looney and the students of 5th and 6th class about their amazing win in the Junior Entrepreneur Project awards last weekend. Two months ago we ran a story about an ingenious little product that the kids in 5th and 6th class had come up with for the Junior Entrepreneur Project: a Tick Kit! In a nutshell, the tick kit gives you the information about what to do if you get a tick bite and also gives you the tools to safely remove the tick from your skin.

Kieran got to chat to the student who came up with the great idea, Ali O’Donoghue, about how she thought up the idea and everything that’s included in the kit. Loreto National School Principal Mary O’Sullivan told us all about the Junior Entrepreneur Project and how it was such a great experience for the students while teacher Mr Edward Looney told us how proud all the staff and parents are of the students, and also where you can get your own tick kit. You can catch this latest episode of The Chatroom tonight at 9pm on our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie and on our Facebook page. Check it out!

Lissivigeen School & Community Defibrillator The recent installation of a defibrillator outside Lissivigeen National School has been achieved by the combined efforts of the school, the Parents Association and Lissivigeen Community Alert. The school provided the defibrillator and wanted it to be available for both the school and the local community. The Parents Association coordinated the fundraising to raise the money for the phone box to house the defibrillator outside the school. Lissivigeen Community Alert, meanwhile, provided

manpower to help with the flag day in Killarney town. The Killarney First Responders provided excellent First Aid and Defibrillator training for the school staff, the parents association and members of the Community Alert. The defibrillator and phone box were put in place outside Lissivigeen National School in May and this project is a good example of what can be achieved when different groups within the community work together. “Ní neart go cur le chéile.”

A massive congratulations to Lily and Killarney Musical Society on this fantastic win from all of us here at the Killarney Advertiser.

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Too Many Cooks Involved In Royal Visit Prince Charles’ visit to Killarney did not just retrace the steps of his great-great-great-grandmother Victoria, he was also following in the footsteps of his great-great-grandmother on his father’s side. Victoria’s daughter Alice, who accompanied her to Killarney in 1861, is Prince Philip’s great-grandmother and so is Charles’ great-great-grandmother, if you get me. I followed the 2018 Muckross leg of the royal visit, which saw Charles and Camilla arrive 40 minutes behind schedule. He did not spend much time at the house - one supposes he is used to posh houses - and was out on the gardens at the first shot where we could overhear him ask the senior NPWS official Philip Buckley about how to get into the woods. He also rearranged the large pool of photographers on the lawn so they could snap him with the lake (“that view” as he put it) in the background. A funny thing happened in the house. I think Charles may have got the wrong end of the stick about the brooch left on the desk for him to admire. The brooch was, of course, a gift from Victoria to the Herberts, but he seemed to think it was a gift “to” Victoria. He admired it greatly and asked, “how did it end up here?” He was more at home in the farms and I felt he would have “hatched” in Quilles’ of the 1930s, the pre-electric days of the large farmhouse. There was one moment on the flagstones of the large kitchen when history and poetry seemed to rhyme. The large farmhouse kitchen in the 30s and 40s would have played host to Kerry sets and dancing to a melodeon, but this time it was the backdrop for a demonstration of uileann pipe music by Declan and Tadgh Buckley and harpist Michelle Mulcahy. This, of course, was the music of the time before the Flight of the Earls. The musicians looked straight from the 17th century. The Duchess tapped her feet, to the pipes playing O’Carolan’s Concerto and said it was “such a lovely

sound”. And with security and officials, as well as most of the press, outside, His Royal Highness took a moment to look around the large kitchen and gaze, wistfully it seemed to me, at the at the old dresser, with its crockery and ornate jam jars, the clock and settle bed, the black range and white-washed walls, soaking in the simple beauty of it all. And while Queen Victoria ordered ornate Killarney furniture after her visit, her descendant has ordered a couple of súgán chairs and a basket for his eggs Farm manager Toddy Doyle, who conducted this part of the visit, seemed to have struck a chord with the royal pair and there were warm handshakes with Toddy and all the farm staff. But with so much to pack into one day, it was a royal case of “chase me Charlie” around Killarney. Too soon, it seemed to me, it was off to Killarney House, where the press were kept well back from everyone. I am sure the royals enjoyed meeting the distinguished guests assembled on the lawns and Camilla, a great supporter of the Soroptimists (her picture is in the Soroptimists club in Hyde Park Corner and she visits occasionally), was intrigued by her introduction to national President Teresa Irwin, who was able to tell her the organisation here was founded by the Queen’s cousin Beatrice Grosvenor. As national president, Te-

Deenagh Blockage Meanwhile nothing more illustrates how too many cooks can mess up a broth than the situation with the River Deenagh on the Port Road. The subject of one of the two eyes of Kingsbridge being blocked and threatening the foundations of St Mary’s Cathedral and causing flooding was raised by Cllr Michael Gleeson (again, it has to be said) at Wednesday’s meeting of the Killarney Municipal District Council. The meeting was told the NPWS was in charge of the bridge and the river and the fisheries people, Inland Fisheries Ireland, also had some input. There was also reference to a new OPW flood risk plan and how it mentions the river and the bridge. The island that has built from silt is now full of noxious and banned weeds, and this would be the responsibility of the Department of Agriculture. How many organisations is that so far? All of them State. Kerry County Council, the NPWS, the OPW, the Inland Fisheries, the Department of Agriculture… And all to shift a build up of a bit of silt which is an obvious problem over the years. Town engineer John Aherne said the area was the responsibility of

resa wore the chain of office once worn by the late Mrs Grosvenor. However, the official speeches at Killarney House went on far too long and too uncomfortably. The sky was dull and dark with weather. A cold breeze blew from the lake and swirled back down and, when we eventually were allowed near the entirely open podium, we could see the Duchess with her coat draped over her shoulders trying desperately to hold onto her skirts while at the same time not freeze to death. Her lady-in-waiting, I was told, was apoplectic with anxiety, fearing for the welfare of her charge. We all wanted to hear from Charles and what he thought of Killarney. We didn’t want to hear Minister Madigan drone on and give a résumé of the entire visit to Cork and Kerry (she mixed up her days, too). We did not want to hear much from the witty MC or the Chamber President or the Mayor of Killarney even. And the more it went on and the more the significance of The Order of Innisfallen was talked up, the more like a scene from Monty Python it seemed to some. Surely someone should have stepped in and decided for the sake even of common courtesy to cut this part of the official proceedings short, given the over-run, given the cold, given the exhausted royal guests? Could no one have moved this part to a tent? Let’s gather ourselves here. The Order of Innisfallen is 26 or 27 years old. For a monarchy of more than 1,000 years, was this so important? A good head waiter would have looked after his people better and it seemed to me there were too many cooks involved - Council, OPW, Chamber, NPWS, and Trustees to a small extent, in the visit to Killarney. Above all I would love to know whose bright idea it was to put the royal couple up on the freezing podium with a gale blowing in two directions at the end of a long day. Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan

the NPWS and there needed to be more engagement between the NPWS and the Council on this and other matters, such as car parking in tourist spots like Torc. Afterwards I put a question into the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht who are in charge of the NPWS, outlining the concerns about the Deenagh near the Demesne And guess what? This is the reply: The area in question is not under NPWS ownership. There is no issue with the flow of the stream. Silt has accumulated at one side of the stream upon which vegetation has grown. This silt does not interfere with the flow of the stream at present as water levels are low at this time of year.” Elsewhere in this column, I called for the return of the town clerk as someone who can co-ordinate matters in a quick and efficient and understated manner. But on second thoughts, maybe what we really need is a benign monarch, someone who would get on with things and cut the nonsense. Do you think we might tempt the practically-minded Charles to “return”?

Speaking, of course, of a good head waiter. The new electoral boundaries recommendations are out and have been presented to Minister John Paul Phelan. One thing that is sorely missed four years after the experimental and largely unsuccessful restructuring of local government, is the role of the town clerk. I felt this was hugely missed with the Prince of Wales’ visit to Killarney. Yes, the Killarney electoral area is likely to be back in a more sensible fashion than stretching up to the Limerick border, and the town will be the centre of the division, but one feels the loss of the town hall and its town clerks greatly and I can see no plans for the restoration of this central role. I have had association with four town clerks and each was as distinguished as the next. With very few staff, they ran the tourist town seamlessly, they had their feet firmly on the ground, and they were in touch daily with the people, even though there were more and more international links, and tasks, particularly in recent years. They were marvellous coordinators. Occasions were always understated and successful. There was always the understanding that less is more! Bring back the town clerk along with the town council, is what I say.

Charles & Camilla

Get A Royal Welcome

Pics: Valerie O’Sullivan

Charles, Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall visited Killarney last week and they received a royal welcome as officials, dignitaries and citizens gathered to greet them at Muckross and Killarney House. Both Charles and Camilla were inducted into the Order of Innisfallen by Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher and the President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Paul O’Neill, in a ceremony at Killarney House. Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Kelleher said the Order of Innisfallen award is “the greatest gift Killarney can give” and recognises the “enormous contribution of the British people to the economic well-being of Killarney, the premier tourist town in

Ireland” down through the years. “I trust that the people of Britain are fully aware that we greatly value and wholeheartedly acknowledge their support of the tourism industry in Killarney and throughout Kerry,” he added, “and we can assure them, and you, that in Killarney, we make a great effort to ensure that every person that considers our town a destination that is worth visiting, is indeed treated like royalty.” The royals came to Killarney by car from Tralee and their entourage, which included 12 vehicles in total, arrived at Muckross House and Gardens in the early afternoon. There they visited the schoolhouse, traditional farms and Muckross House itself, where Charles’ ancestor Queen Victoria stayed when she came to Killarney in August 1861. The Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall then moved on to Killarney House where they were met by 200 invited guests. It is here the royal couple were inducted into the prestigious Order of Innisfallen.

The Prince Of Wales and The Rome Escape Line

During the recent visit to Killarney House & Gardens by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Charles met briefly with members of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Committee. To mark the Royal Visit and the 75th anniversary of the creation of the WW2 Rome Escape Line by Killarney native Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, the Memorial Society presented the Prince with a boxed first edition copy of Major Sam Derry’s book, The Rome Escape Line. As a brief background to the book’s story, Memorial Society Chairman Jerry O’Grady brought Prince Charles through an album of images of the main characters from the time and from Nazi occupied Rome. These included an announcement by his grandfather King George VI in an April 1945 copy of the London Gazette, which said that Monsignor Hugh J O’Flaherty was being awarded a CBE (Commander of the British Empire), for his services to the Forces in Italy. “The Prince was delighted to accept this special edition of Sam

Derry’s book and had a particular interest in the involvement of Sir D’Arcy Osborne, the then British Ambassador to the Holy See, saying that he had been a friend of his mother, Queen Elizabeth,” said Jerry O’Grady. “He was also aware of the part played in this incredible story by Gestapo Chief Col. Herbert Kappler and quickly identified his image within the album.” “We were hoping that it might have been possible for the Prince and Duchess to pay a short visit to the nearby Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial, but Garda security considerations ruled this out,” Jerry added. “However, we did show him some images of the memorial and we were delighted to have had the opportunity to share our story with Prince Charles and introduce him to the Monsignor’s niece, Pearl Dineen”. Plans are being prepared to hold a special commemoration on June 4, 2019 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Rome and the effective winding up of The Rome Escape Line.

Starcamp Brings The Magic! Summer fun, camp games, singing, dancing, acting and confidence building have always been the staple ingredients behind the infamous, award-winning camp experience that is Starcamp. Now you can add news reporting, interviewing, band practice, superhero masterclasses, starlympics, and arts and crafts. This year, they are also introducing a touch of magic for all those budding magicians. The week is jam-packed with all children’s favourite things to do. “Children have never needed Starcamp in their lives more than they do now,” says owner Aideen O’ Grady, who is also a regular panellist on TV3’s The Elaine Show and was also a memorable winner on Dragons Den. “It is a proven fact that the performing arts, music and general creativity are essential for a child’s overall well-being. They emit the ‘happy hormone’ in bucket loads. Children should feel free to find and to be themselves without being judged. They should be using their imagination, making noise, jumping and dancing around and laughing out loud. Children should celebrate being children and that is why we started Starcamp 12 years ago.” Starcamp leads the way each summer as Ireland’s number 1 and only nationwide performing arts camp. It runs in almost 220 towns nationwide and staff at Starcamp HQ work 12 months of the year to create the best summer camp experience possible for all children aged 4 to 12. The camp runs for five days from 9.30am-2.30pm and children are sub divided

into their own age groups for advancing programs. Starcamp is also a clear favourite amongst Ireland’s celebs. Rachel Allen sent her child and said: “My daughter took part in Starcamp and really, really enjoyed it. All the teachers were so kind and encouraging to the children and they put on such a great show at the end.” Pamela Flood had this to say: “My little man had his 1st day at the fantastic Starcamp today! He absolutely loved it! Well done to all. Starcamp really does live up to its incredible reputation. It is the must-do summer camp for all children. It’s not like any other.” Others who regularly speak highly of it include Jedward, Elaine Crowley, Ramona Nicholas, Alison Curtis and many more. Starcamp has become a household name as parents ensure their child’s place as early as November of the previous year, so make sure to secure your child’s place as most of their nationwide camps will be full by the time you go to book! Book your limited place now at www.starcamp. ie or by calling 021 4377900.

‘Incredibles 2’ Has Biggest Opening EVER For An Animated Movie Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2”! This time Helen (aka Elastic Girlr) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (Mr. Incredible) at home with Violet and Dash to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. It’s a tough transition for every one, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby JackJack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone must find a way to work together again – which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible. The combined powers of superheroes, the Pixar brand and a draught of family-friendly films helped Incredibles 2 become the best animated opening of all time, the biggest PG-rated launch ever and the 8th highest film launch overall. Disney estimated Sunday that the film earned $180 million in its first weekend in North American theaters - far surpassing industry analysts’ loftiest expectations which had the film pegged for a $120 to $140 million debut. The previous animation record-holder was another Pixar sequel, Finding Dory, which had a $135 million launch in 2016. It was Dis-

Announcing the arrival, Eva told fans that Santiago Enrique Bastón arrived on Tuesday and is a ‘beautiful blessing.’

Love Island star Sophie Gradon dies at 32: Host Caroline Flack, ex Katie Salmon and co-star Olivia Buckland lead heartbreaking tributes to the ‘beautiful soul’

Tributes flooded in for late Love Island star Sophie Gradon after her devastating death was announced yesterday. The reality favourite was found dead at her home on Wednesday evening shortly before her co-stars, fans and fellow celebrities took to social media to share gushing tributes following her untimely death. Leading the emotional messages to the star, who featured in the 2016 series of the show, was host Caroline Flack who branded Sophie ‘a beautiful soul’, while her ex Katie Salmon shared a heartbreaking statement alongside co-star Olivia Buckland. A spokesperson from Northumbria Police told MailOnline: ‘At about 8.27pm yesterday police attended a property in Medburn, Ponteland, where sadly a 32-year-old woman was found deceased. Leading the way was host Caroline, who shared an emotional message on the microblogging site reading: ‘So very sad . Such a beautiful soul .... such a beautiful smile ...thoughts and love with friends and family’.

ney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast that held the record for a PG debut with $174.8 million in 2017. ‘You don’t get to this level of opening without appealing to everyone whether you’re a fan of animation, superheroes or just out to have a good time and want to see a good movie,’ said Cathleen Taff, the head of distribution for Walt Disney Studios. ‘We had a film that had something for all ages.’ According to Disney, adults made up 31 percent of the audience, families accounted for 57 percent and teens 11 percent. Incredibles 2 comes 14 years after The Incredibles, which at the time boasted one of the biggest animated openings ever, and picks up right where the first film left off with the superhero family. Brad Bird returned to write and direct the sequel, which has been overwhelmingly well-received by both critics and audiences. ‘This is one of the biggest over-performances I’ve ever seen,’ said comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. ‘To over-perform by $40 million means everyone underestimated the power of animation to draw huge audiences.’ Incredibles 2 is released in Irish cinemas on 13th of July.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Instagram Launch Juncker: No Brexit Deal Without Border Agreement New Video App European Commission president JeanClaude Juncker has warned the UK there will be no Brexit deal without agreement on the Irish border. On a visit to Dublin, Mr Juncker said fellow EU member states would not let Ireland be “isolated” on the impasse, insisting the demand for a resolution was a Europe-wide demand. Amid an ongoing stand-off over how to maintain a free-flowing border post-Brexit, Mr Juncker assured Taoiseach Leo Varadkar that the EU would not waver on what he made clear was a pivotal issue. “This is not a bilateral question between Ireland and the United Kingdom - this is an issue between the UK and the European Union,” he said. “We want to make it clear again and again that Ireland is not alone. We have Ireland backed by 26 member states and the commission – this will not change. I am strongly against any temptation to isolate Ireland and not to conclude

the deal on Ireland. Ireland has to be part of the deal.” Coming a week ahead of a key European Council meeting of leaders in Brussels, the visit to Dublin of Mr Juncker and the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier is a clear demonstration of the EU’s solidarity with Ireland’s position. This week the EU warned that more work was needed on how to deal with the 300-mile border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, the UK’s only land frontier with a European state, and protect frictionless movement after the withdrawal.

Trump Corner Time Cover Highlights US Border Separation Policy The Trump administration’s policy that effectively separated families crossing the US border has held up a big, glaring mirror to America’s moral character. In TIME magazine’s latest cover, the reflection is met with indifference in the face of human suffering. In the stark photo illustration, the towering figure of Trump looms over a sobbing child, who is the subject of a now-iconic photograph taken recently by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John Moore. “Welcome to America,” the illustration reads. Moore told the magazine he had to “stop and take deep breaths” after capturing the image of a two-year-old Honduran girl crying for her mother, who was being detained in McAllen, Texas. The cover is for the July 2 edition of the magazine, which will appear on newsstands the week of Independence Day. The Trump administration’s socalled “zero tolerance” policy has resulted in many people being

Never fails to entertain

taken into federal custody immediately after crossing the border. Children cannot follow their family members or guardians into custody, so US guidelines mandate that those children be separated - often from their parents. This week, President Trump signed an executive order reversing the policy after days of double talk from administration officials and the President himself. However, the order did not specify any solution for the 2,300 children who are reportedly being detained or bounced around the country without the parents who crossed the border with them.

Instagram is taking on YouTube and other ad-supported streaming service with a new mobile app IGTV. The Facebook-owned social network is hoping to tap into the popularity of internet celebrities, artists and even pets, who are attracting millions of followers on the platform. Instagram currently limits videos to one minute; the new app will allow videos of up to an hour in length. The company said the format had been devised with how people use their phones in mind - full screen and vertical. “Teens are now watching 40 per cent less TV than they did five years ago,” Instagram chief executive Kevin Systrom said at an event to announce the launch in San Francisco. “It’s time for video to move forward and evolve.” Although there is a standalone app for IGTV, the content will also be accessible inside the

main Instagram app. “When you follow a creator on Instagram, their IGTV channel will show up for you to watch,” Mr Systrom said. The platform is also trying to encourage users to become creators; anyone can start a channel by uploading IGTV videos to the app or on the web. The latest feature is another step in the development of Instagram. Founded in 2010, Instagram was bought by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion. Originally a photo-sharing app, it has since evolved to include video, direct messaging and Snapchat-inspired features like daily “stories” that disappear in 24 hours. The service now has more than 1 billion users, Instagram said. Facebook shares rose 2.3 per cent on Wednesday to $202.06 after earlier crossing the $200 mark for the first time.

Wife of Israeli PM Indicted For Misusing Funds The wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been charged with fraud relating to the alleged misuse of state funds. Sara Netanyahu is charged with misusing 359,000 shekels (€85,400) for catering services at the prime minister’s official residence. She is also charged with a breach of trust following a police inquiry, the justice ministry says. Mrs Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing. Her lawyers described the indictment as absurd and delusional. Yesterday, she was charged along with Ezra Seidoff, a former deputy director general of the prime minister’s office. The Jerusalem District Attorney’s Office said the decision to indict both Mrs Netanyahu and Mr Seidoff was made “after reviewing all ev-

idence and weighing all circumstances of the case”. Last year, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit announced that he was considering charging Mrs Netanyahu over the allegations following a long-running investigation, which has been the subject of intense speculation in the Israeli media. According to the details of the indictment, Mrs Netanyahu and Mr Seidoff are suspected of involvement in expenses claims made between September 2010 and March 2013 for food delivered to the prime minister’s official residence and for hiring private chefs. The expenses claims were said to have been made whilst covering up the fact that the residence also employed a cook. State funding for both is not allowed.

Clark Knocked Out On Spanish Dancefloor

Footballer Ciaran Clark was taken to hospital in Spain last weekend after an attack in a bar reportedly left him unconscious. According to local newspaper Ultima Hora, the Republic of Ireland international was punched by another man when a row broke out on the dancefloor of Crystal’s Bar in Punta Ballena, Magaluf. The 28-year-old, who plays his club football with English Premier League side Newcastle

United, subsequently lost consciousness and was taken to San Espases Hospital in Palma. The BBC have reported that a British man in his 30s was arrested, charged with criminal injuries and was later released. He appeared in court on Monday. Clark has been capped 29 times at senior level by Ireland. The London-born defender missed the recent friendlies against France and USA due to a knee injury.

Man Charged With Killing Rapper XXXTentacion A suspect has been charged with the murder of rising rap star XXXTentacion, authorities in Florida said on Thursday. Dedrick Devonshay Williams (22), of Pompano Beach, was arrested shortly before 7pm Wednesday, the Broward sheriff’s office said in a news release sent Thursday morning. Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy (20), who went by the stage name pronounced “Ex Ex Ex tenta-see-YAWN,” was gunned down Monday as he left an upscale motorcycle dealership near Fort Lauderdale where he was planning to make a purchase. Authorities said the rapper was ambushed by two suspects. His attorney, David Bogenschutz, said Tuesday that investigators told him XXXTentacion had visited a bank shortly before the shooting and possibly withdrew cash to buy a motorcycle at Riva Motorsports in Deerfield Beach. He was exiting the dealership in his luxury BMW electric car when he was shot. Williams is charged with first-degree murder without premedita-

tion, a probation violation and for not having a valid driver’s license. He was being held without bond in the Broward county jail on Thursday. Court records show Williams has been charged previously with several felonies, including grand theft auto, domestic violence, cocaine possession and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. It does not appear, however, that he has ever done prison time for these charges and some of them were dropped. Williams does not appear in the Florida Department of Corrections offender database. XXXTentacion was a rising star who scored a number one album in March with his sophomore effort ? and had a top 10 hit with Sad! But his brief career was marked by controversy. In 2016, he was arrested on charges including home invasion for a 2015 incident, and less than a month later was jailed on charges that he attacked his girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time. Ireland is set to bask in scorching sunshine with temperatures predicted to soar as high as 29C next week. The weather is set to gradually improve day by day, until Ireland could experience real heatwave conditions. While it is a little early to predict exactly how high the temperatures will reach, Met Éireann forecaster Deirdre Lowe said that the mercury will only be on the rise as next week progresses. “By Wednesday or Thursday, the temperatures could reach 28C or 29C but it is too early to say for definite. It will gradually get warmer over the week. We are experiencing high pressure so inland will be warmer,” she added.

The technical definition of a heatwave is five consecutive days of temperatures which are five degrees above the average. Although forecasters cannot promise a heatwave for sure, Met Éireann is already predicting improved conditions, with warm weather and a long, settled spell of good weather. The good weather will be a welcome relief after Storm Hector and the cloudier conditions of recent days. The weekend will see temperatures hit 23C in places on Saturday, with the midlands and south set for the warmest conditions. Sunday is set to be even better, with “long spells of hazy sunshine”. This will lead to temperatures in the range of 19C to 24C.

Koko The Gorilla Dies Aged 46 Koko the gorilla, who is said to have been able to communicate by using more than 1,000 hand signs, has died in California at the age of 46. Instructors taught her a version of American Sign Language and say she used it to convey thoughts and feelings. The abilities of the gorilla, who also apparently understood some spoken English, were documented by animal psychologist Francine Patterson. She adopted and named pets, including a kitten she called All Ball. “Koko - the gorilla known for her extraordinary mastery of sign language, and as the primary ambassador for her endangered species - passed away yesterday [Wednesday] morning in her sleep at the age of 46,” a Gorilla Foundation press release said. “Koko touched the lives of millions as an ambassador for all gorillas and an icon for interspecies communication and empathy. She was beloved and will be deeply missed.”

The gorilla, who was said to have an IQ of between 75 and 95, could understand 2,000 words of spoken English. The average IQ for humans on many tests is 100, and most people score somewhere between 85 and 115. She was born at the San Francisco Zoo in 1971. Dr Patterson began working with Koko the following year and taught her sign language, the Gorilla Foundation said.

Netflix - Set It Up

Review: The Carters - Everything Is Love Some couples repair rifts in their relationships with expensive therapy. Beyoncé and JAY-Z tour stadiums together and surprise-release collaborative albums that mine their self-mythologized personal drama for big-ticket entertainment. Sonically closer to Beyoncé’s 2016 high-art airing of dirty laundry Lemonade than Jay’s 2017 response 4:44, this isn’t just rubbernecking

at the doings inside America’s royal family—it’s a challenging, tense, and thoroughly catchy summertime romp in its own right. When Beyoncé sings, “I can’t believe we made it,” she might be referring to the détente in their high-profile marriage; she might mean this very album. The fun is in decoding—but it’s hardly the only fun.

There hasn’t been a really decent Rom-Com in a while but Netflix have taken it upon themselves to make their own! Brooklyn Nine-Nine director Claire Scanlon is in control of Set It Up which sees Zoey Deutch & Glen Powell star as two young assistants in New York City who realize they can make their lives easier by setting up their workaholic bosses on a date. While trying to perpetuate this romantic ruse between their nightmare bosses, the assistants realize they might

be right for each other. If you told us tomorrow that Deutch and Powell were signed up for a series of Tom Hanks/ Meg Ryan-esque rom-coms, we’d watch every single one of them, they are that good together! If you’ve seen a romcom before, you can pretty much set your watch by how Set It Up will play out. But playing by familiar beats isn’t a dealbreaker when you play them really well. Set It Up doesn’t reinvent the genre as much as it reminds us why we missed it so much.

Depilève originates from Spain and is now one of the largest manufacturers of wax in the world, says Jill O’Donoghue of Killarney Toning & Beauty

Depilève: A Solution For All Your Waxing Needs Depilève Wax is the easiest way to achieve beautiful, smoother skin for longer, making it the world’s number one in professional waxing treatments. Depilève originates from Spain and is now one of the largest manufacturers of wax in the world. In fact, Depilève wax is now available in over 87 countries worldwide. We have gained a reputation as the best waxing specialists. Depilève offers a solution for all of your waxing needs. We have developed the most luxurious combination of waxes available in an array of soothing and relaxing scents which ensure that you get the best results every time. The waxes available to you are hot wax, strip wax, intimate wax and men’s wax. Exfoliate the day prior to treatment and pay special attention to dry areas i.e. elbows, knees, underarms, ankles, hands, feet and neck. Strip Wax Depilève strip wax is gently heated which heightens its effectiveness and releases its relaxing aromatherapy

scent. It is applied in a very thin layer meaning that any discomfort is kept to an absolute minimum. It is then removed using a Depilève waxing strip. Traditional Wax The traditional Depilève wax is heated and applied in a thick layer, and removed by hand without using a strip. This method is slower than strip waxing, but is less painful and is more suitable to smaller, more sensitive areas. Traditional wax is often referred to as hot wax or peel off wax. Intimate Wax This combines all that is good from strip waxing, such as the application of a thin layer of heated wax, the quick means of removal and its ability to be used on all areas of the body, with the comfort of traditional waxing. The intimate wax is specifically formulated by Depilève for the more sensitive and intimate areas including the bikini, face and underarm, which require an extra bit of TLC! The peel off method is a little slower than the more popular strip waxing but it is well worth it for a deeply soothing and virtually pain free waxing experience.

Men’s Wax Our male customers out there need not worry, Depileve has a range of strip and film waxes just for men. These waxes are formulated to effectively and comfortably remove stronger, shorter hair and so are perfectly tailored for the men of Ireland! Waxing Lotions Here at Depilève, we believe that a professional waxing experience must offer much more than just a high quality wax. That is why we offer a full range of lotions and oils to perfectly prepare your skin prior to your waxing treatment, and protect your skin following each session. Depilève salons are not happy to consider the process of waxing alone and so we place a strong focus on pre and post-treatment care for our customers. We offer a wide range of pre-waxing treatments that are designed to properly prepare the skin for waxing, ensuring

CAO Change Of Mind Facility Closes July 1 The CAO Change of Mind facility is open until 5.15pm on Sunday, July 1 and gives applicants the opportunity to review their current choices and make changes if necessary. There is no charge for this facility. Up to the deadline applicants can add, remove, or re-order course choices. Applicants can add any course to their list, even if they did not include it in the application they submitted in February. The only exception to this are restricted entry courses which are clearly marked in the CAO handbook. Applicants should also take this opportunity to revisit their Level 8 and Level 7/6 lists and examine carefully both the courses they have applied for and the order in which they have been placed. CAO choices should be based on order of preference only and not on how students think they may have performed during the exams or indeed what they expect the cut-off points to be for the course they have chosen. That will not be known until Monday, August 20, the expected date for first round CAO offers to be issued. The golden rule is that courses must always be listed in order of preference.

In order to make changes to their course listing, applicants should log into their account on HYPERLINK “http://www.cao.ie”www.cao.ie using the ‘my application’ prompt. Here they will be asked for their CAO number, date of birth and password. Applicants can then enter their separate lists: Level 8 and Level 7/6. A short video guide on the change of mind process is available on HYPERLINK “http:// www.cao.ie”www.cao.ie.

Words: Debby Looney

It seems that every day new plants are created. New colours, varieties, shapes of leaves/flowers, all with patents and rights attached so growers/inventors can make money, and consumers continue to buy. So many of these have short life spans and cannot withstand our weather. They are hyped up, the market is flooded, the trend is set, and the customer buys. We are all victim to it, myself probably being one of the worst affected! However, what of the old plants? The reliable ones our grandparents grew? In the vegetable world they would be known as ‘heirloom varieties’. In the fashion industry it is called ‘vintage’. In the gardening world they are called ‘boring’. In recent years, as I see one thing after another failing, I am

beginning to appreciate the boring plants! Take Potentillas for example. They come in red, orange, cream and yellow, flower all summer from April onwards, need no pruning or deadheading, and are generally disease free and hardy. Why have they been forgotten? ‘Yellow Queen’, ‘Primrose Beauty’, ‘Abbotswood White’ and ‘Red Ace’ are excellent varieties. Spirea is another plant which is not as popular as it should be. ‘Snowmound’ has delicate bright green leaves on arching branches. In early spring it is covered in pure white flowers. ‘Goldmound’ has bright red new foliage which turns a lovely shade of gold, and flowers pink throughout the summer. ‘Golden Princess’ and ‘Little Princess’ are dwarf varieties. Astilbe, also commonly called Spirea, is a perennial with spikes of red, pink,

cream or white flowers. They are great fillers and will grow in any soil. Slug and rabbit resistant - a must-have. Shasta daisies are also reliable, but go for the original, single-flowered one. All the funky, spikey, double types need care and attention. And well-drained soil! Cistus, or rockrose, are another oldfashioned plant which has fallen out of favour. I am not sure why, as they are compact, free-flowering, evergreen and easy to grow! There are many varieties to choose from, but mainly they are pink and white. It is advisable to cut them back by half after flowering to prevent them going woody and too big. It is not just in the world of shrubs and perennials that old favourites are pushed aside. Are you growing Alyssum? The white and blue borders, as they are known, are forgotten about! Also

This column is available to clubs and SUPPORT groups to promote upcoming fundraising events, agms etc. To guarantee publication an administration charge OF €10 will apply. Please contact 064 6632215 for more details. DEADLINE FOR EVENT INFO IS TUESDAY 5.30PM

marigolds, and especially Tagetes, are not that popular. Tagetes keeps away midges, and their scent is delicious. Pretty yellow flowers, they withstand wind, rain and heat. Ageratum always reminds me of my grandmother, and as such I always have it. But it is so hard to get it is almost rare! Salvia is another bedding plant which has been left by the wayside, but show me another red as vibrant! So, even though new plants are exciting, it is worthwhile building a garden around tried and tested reliables. It is after 15 years of spending money, digging out and transplanting, disappointment and questioning myself as a gardener, that I come to you with this advice!

It’s been on the cards for a while but, ahead of this weekend’s French Grand Prix, Red Bull and Honda have announced that they will link up from next season on. Red Bull, who have grown frustrated with current power unit suppliers Renault, and Toro Rosso will run identi-

cal specification power units. Honda have been open to taking on a second team as they bid to make up ground on pace-setting engines Mercedes and Ferrari. This weekend sees F1 return to the Paul Ricard Circuit, which hosted the French Grand Prix on 14 occasions between 1971 and 1990.

Alonso Wins Le Mans To Get Closer To Triple Crown The Toyota Gazoo Racing TS050 Hybrid team of Fernando Alonso, Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima led Toyota to its first win at the Le Mans 24 Hour race at the Circuit de la Sarthe. For Alonso, the win, on his first attempt at the iconic endurance race, means he has secured two of the three victories required to equal Graham Hill, the only driver to have achieved motor racing’s triple crown. With wins here and Monaco now under Alonso’s belt, only the Indy 500 remains.

Porsche Celebrates 70 Years With 911 Speedster Porsche has revealed a new Speedster concept based on its current 911 to celebrate seven decades of sports carmaking. Based on the latest 991 version of the 911, the Speedster is clearly inspired by the original 356 Speedster that was made between 1954 and 1958. Featuring a chopped, more steeply-raked front windscreen, the modern day Speedster ditches its rear

seats and adopts a new double-bubble cover that both saves weight and hides a lightweight fabric roof. Under the rear bonnet, the Speedster comes equipped with the more powerful 368kW/460Nm 4.0-litre flat six-cylinder from the 911 GT3. For now, Porsche claims the 911 Speedster is to be purely a concept, but an ultra-limited production run is expected to arrive in 2019.

Sensational Duggan Shines In Donegal The Joule sponsored Donegal International Rally took place last weekend in Letterkenny and the three-day event received a maximum capacity entry in all categories of over 150 cars. There were a total of 20 special stages based around the foothills of Donegal, which included the famous classic stages such as Knockalla, Atlantic Drive and Fanad Head. Killarney & District Motor Club competitors were there in force and they didn’t disappoint. Rob Duggan was an absolute sensation, finishing 3rd R5 car and 4th overall. Rob has gained the respect of the whole rallying community on this island. Having proven his pace and ability in the past, driving both front and rear wheel drive, the step up to a four wheel drive R5 monster was always going to be interesting. Duggan and navigator Ger Conway took on the best of the best over three days and the pair applied themselves fantastically. Following a brief test on Thursday in this unknown Ford Fiesta R5 machine, there was complete astonishment at the end of the first stage on Friday when Duggan emerged as the fastest R5 car overall. As the weekend progressed, Rob set a number of fastest R5 times, along with two fastest overall stages times. The unpredictable weather conditions were the biggest challenge for the crew and the lack of knowledge of the car and set-up changes needed to achieve the maximum handling of the car were unknown. The crew fought hard and were as high as 3rd overall and 2nd R5 car at one stage. They were stuck in the middle of a monumental R5 battle between brothers Sam and Josh Moffett from County Monaghan with mere seconds in it all way to the finish. This for sure was one of Rob’s best results to date.

Huge credit must go to Ger on the notes also. There is no doubt that they had the drive of the rally. KDMC are proud of their achievement and hope to see them progress further. KDMC were out in front in the National section too. Noel O’Sullivan from Muckross was co-driving for top Donegal driver Kevin Gallagher in his unusual Darrian T90. The crew were involved in a huge battle all weekend for the lead of the National section. They finished runners up

to Kildare’s Ian Barrett in a similar Darrian. KDMC’s Barry Meade was, as expected, front-runner in the national section but a puncture dropped him well down the order on Friday. The crew then set out on a huge recovery drive and set some blistering times along the way to climb back up to 9th overall. In the extremely competitive Junior section, KDMC’s Derry Long and Declan Casey had a brilliant drive. They competed in a Honda Civic and finished a very strong 6th overall and 3rd in class. This result now puts Derry into second place in the Junior section of the Irish Tarmac Championship. This was the crew’s first visit to Donegal so achieving such a fantastic result and securing valuable championship points is truly remarkable. Congratulations and well done to all.

Audi

Audi Aicon Heading For Limited Production Audi has announced that the Aicon concept it unveiled at last year’s Frankfurt motor show will enter production in 2021. The Aicon, which incorporated Audi’s latest artificial intelligence, is expected to enter limited production for a pilot project to develop a fully autonomous vehicle. Production volumes have not been confirmed but the ad-

vanced pure-electric car is not expected to break three figures. It’s not yet known if the production Aicon will be offered to private buyers or if they will remain the property of Audi for internal testing. As well as driverless capability, the Aicon’s AI also incorporates machine learning and both carto-car and car-to-infrastructure communication.

A Third Of All Volvos Sold In 2025 Will Be Autonomous Volvo has earned a reputation for shock announcements about its future, having promised that all its models will either be pure-electric or have an electrified powerplant by 2019, and predicting that half of all the vehicles it sells in 2025 will be battery-electric. Now it has made the bold declaration that, come 2025, 33 per cent of all its sales will be autonomous cars and 50 per cent will be driven using its subscription service. The Swedish car-maker says its latest prediction follows close monitoring of customer trends, needs and desires. It’s thought that Uber, Volvo’s autonomous driving development partner, will allow the Swedish

car-maker to sell cars equipped with autonomous driving aids to private customers, hence inflating the sales volumes further. Currently, Volvos like the S90 offer Level 2 autonomous driving via Pilot Assist but, thanks to the cooperation with Uber, nextgen models will skip straight to Level 4, allowing completely autonomous ‘eyes-off’ driving in certain conditions - although a traditional steering wheel and pedals will still be offered for when the driver is required to takeover. Later on, full Level 5 - the holy grail of driverless technology - will be offered, but only when it is deemed completely safe, Volvo says.

My angel up in heaven, I hope you understand, That I would give anything, If I could hold your hand. I’d hold you oh so tightly, And never let you go, And all the love inside of me, To you I would show. It wouldn’t be summertime in Killarney without the annual 7-a-side soccer tournament and this year’s senior competition kicks off on Monday evening in Woodlawn. This is the 42nd edition of Killarney Athletic’s popular event and with some exciting new changes and a host of very strong-looking teams, it promises to be one of the best yet. Organisers have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks and months to make sure the pitch is in the best possible condition and club officials and players have put their heads together to come up with a few new ideas to freshen things up. For the first time ever there will be rolling subs in the senior competition and it’s hoped that this will lead to more exciting, high-tempo games. In the knockout stages, drawn games will go straight to American style penalties. If you haven’t seen this type of penalty shootout before, check it out on YouTube. Penalty takers start 30 yards from goal and have seven seconds to score past the goalkeeper, who can come off his line once the whistle is blown. They are highly entertaining and will surely prove to be a great addition to the 7-a-side.

Who’s playing?

The draw has thrown up a couple of dingers, most notably Group 2 which has been dubbed the Group of Death by pundits and players alike. It includes my own team, the Speakeasy Bar, reigning champions the Fáilte Legends, MD O’Shea’s, Four Star Pizza and Inter My Van. The Speak team will be made up by the likes of myself, serial tapper-inner Shane Lynch, Legion forward Conor Keane, Crokes back Buddy O’Leary and veteran netminder Pony ‘Gigi’ O’Riordan. We had a good side and a nice kit last year but half of us went on the beer when Athletic won the league and missed the first two games. This year we’ve been let down big time by Ryan O’Carroll who jumped ship at the last minute. Good riddance. Judas. The Fáilte Legends are sure to be strong again with Celtic stars Gary Keane and Cathal O’Shea likely to feature. I suppose we’d all be strong if we started signing fellas from Tralee. (Dig!) MD O’Shea’s have three of Celtic’s back four (Smiley, Chris Brady and Brendan Falvey) but they’ll also have to carry Kevin Breen so you wouldn’t know how they might fare. I’m led to believe that Four Star Pizza

Liebherr The Lake Hotel Port River Wanderers Tim Jones & Sons Dunboy

Fixtures: will have a number of Spa footballers, the likes of Shane Cronin et al, so they’ll be decent. At the time of going to print I still wasn’t able to figure out who Inter My Van are but judging by their name, they’re young fellas/deviants. Two of the traditionally stronger teams, the Tatler Toffees and Charlies Angels, are in Group 1 along with the Fáilte Bar, Big Hitters FC and Cavemen Clothing. The Tatler, who lost last year’s final, are very Crokesy as usual and they’ll be good again this year. They’ll have Cian Tobin as well when he comes back from the Middle East, another guy who should be playing with the Speak. There’s no loyalty in the modern game. In Group 3, Dennehy’s Bar (Glenflesk) and O’Riordan Sand & Gravel (Rathmore) will be favourites to advance. The latter have George O’Keeffe, Mark Reen and Shane Ryan in their ranks and they’ll be tough to beat in the group stage. Group 4 looks to be fairly open, although the Lake Hotel, led by talented striker Vladimir Sirotiak, could be dangerous. We’ll have to wait and see. Win, lose or draw, I’m sure everyone will enjoy themselves over the coming weeks. “I Expect Kerry To Win… But The Margin Will Be Tight”

Pic: Paudie Healy

Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald Provincial finals are special and the intense rivalry between Cork and Kerry over many decades makes the Munster football final extra special. Kerry will face Cork in the senior final tomorrow at 7pm in Páirc Uí Chaoimh while the minors will meet Clare at 4.30pm. The date and timing of these games is a break with tradition. Normally these finals are played on the first Sunday in July and in the early afternoon. Apparently scheduling the finals on a Saturday evening facilitates TV coverage. It certainly makes it very awkward, especially for those fans who are travelling from such remote areas as Eyeries and Valentia. There is no indication from the Munster Council as to why the minor game is so early. That game should be finished by 5.45pm and the senior game will not be going ahead until 7pm. It certainly will present some supporters with a dilemma and they may not travel in such large numbers. Kerry are favourites in the senior final after shooting 32 points against Clare in the senior semi-final played here in the Fitzgerald Stadium some weeks ago. I was very impressed by the forwards in particular in that game. However, Cork were also very impressive in their clear-cut win over a fancied Tipperary team. Kerry keeper Shane Murphy had little to do against Clare but this will be a much sterner test. He has proved his worth and his kick-outs are well varied to retain possession. I expect that he will be going short most of the time as Cork are very strong in the middle of the field, particularly Aidan Walsh. I expect Walsh to be the key player here and David Moran needs to up his game to nullify the expected Cork dominance in that area. Jack Barry will be taking up Ian Maguire.

Luke Connolly

If Kerry get enough of the ball into the forward division they will run up a big score. At the other

end Cork have a match-winner in Luke Connolly who scored at will against Tipperary. He will prove a handful for Kerry corner backs Shanahan or Foley. They will be severely tested and if he is curbed Cork will be well down in scores. They will be without the talented Colm O’Neill who is most unlucky with injury. He had three cruciate operations and was just returning to top form when he damaged his cartilage in the Tipperary game. It will be interesting to see who Cork play in his absence. They might give a starting position to Paul Kerrigan who is back after a long lay-off with injury. He is their most experienced player. He might be listed at number 14 but charged with a roving role outfield, hoping to leave plenty of room in front of the Kerry goal. That would give great space to their danger men Mark Collins and Luke Connolly. It would pull Peter Crowley far out from goal, although that would not be a problem for the Kerry full back as he has played most of his football for Kerry in the past in the half back line. Luke Connolly is very accurate so being isolated inside may well be the ploy Cork will use. The Kerry half back line has done well with Gavin White, in particular, catching the eye. He has great courage and tremendous pace. He may be picking up Jack O’Rourke who played a very defensive game against Tipperary, dropping out to midfield for the kick outs and back in his own half back line to crowd out the Tipperary forward division.

Kerry’s Impressive Forwards

I was very impressed with all of the Kerry forwards in the semi-final. 32 points is a massive score but we also need goals as goals often are the difference between victory and defeat. Paul Geaney is a key man on the edge of the square. While he won the man-to-man duel against Clare, Cork will crowd out the scoring area and scores will be hard to come by. James O’Donoghue showed no ill effects from his long lay-off and is one man who can knife through

the opposition. He may well be the man to score goals against Cork’s new keeper Mark White. I was also impressed by Kerry wing forward Micheál Burns in the semi-final. He has a great engine and has the pace and stamina to drop back to help out in defence. He is also well able to score. Two former All-Ireland minor winners, Seán O’Shea and David Clifford, have fitted in very well. They will have to deal with a crowded Cork defence, which will be a big challenge for them in their first Munster senior final, but they deserve their starting positions. They are very exciting players and O’Shea is also very good at taking frees. Mark Collins, Luke Connolly and Colm O’Neill scored 1-13 between them out of a total of 1-17 against Tipperary. That is impressive, but Cork won’t have O Neill tomorrow. Teams have not been announced as we go to press, but I expect no change on the Kerry team from the Clare game. Cork will have one enforced change at least, with Colm O’Neill out of the reckoning. It will be very tough to beat Cork on their home patch and their new manager Ronan McCarthy has done a good job. He is giving youth its chance just like Kerry so it should be an interesting, tactical game. I expect Kerry to win but the margin will be tight.

Minor Game

Peter Keane has done a great job with the minors. They were quite fortunate to edge out Cork by a late point in time added on in Tralee several weeks ago. They should have too much scoring power for Clare so I expect them to win with something to spare. These teams are now playing under 17 in place of the former under 18. Already an All-Ireland minor-winning manager, Keane is steadily building a successful portfolio to be the main contender for the senior job when Eamonn Fitzmaurice finishes his term of office.

We’re one week into the World Cup and you’d have to say that it has been great value so far. There have been plenty of goals, upsets and talking points and it certainly bodes well for the rest of the tournament. Many of the bigger teams faltered in their opening fixture so there will be a lot at stake over the next few days. My predictions didn’t go too well last week. I thought that Argentina, Germany and Spain would all win but evidently I underestimated Iceland, Mexico and Cristiano Ronaldo. If I had any sense I’d pack in the predictions now because it’s basically impossible. But here are the biggest games coming up in the next seven days and my picks for each. You miss all of the shots you don’t take. Group E Serbia v Switzerland Tonight at 7pm (RTÉ 2 & BBC)

This time last week, Serbia and Switzerland would have bitten your hand off for second place in Group E. Considering how the first two games turned out, they both might well have loftier ambitions than that. The Swiss confounded the experts by holding pre-tournament favourites Brazil to a draw on Sunday evening, Steven Zuber’s header cancelling out Philippe Coutinho’s first half wondergoal. Serbia, meanwhile, overcame Costa Rica in their opener thanks to an expertly-taken Aleksander Kolarov free-kick. If Serbia can overcome their fellow Europeans in Kalingrad they’ll advance to the last 16 with a game to spare. They’ll also give themselves a great chance of topping the group and avoiding the first place team in Group F in the next round. There’s just one problem with that: Germany’s defeat to Mexico means there’s a distinct possibility that they ishing second in that particumight end up finlar group. So finishing second in Group E might actually be preferable… Serbia looked solid enough against Costa Rica but Switzerland will be confident after the Brazil result. This will be a tight one. Maybe. I have no idea to be honest. Prediction: Serbia 1-1 Switzerland

Group D Germany v Sweden Saturday at 4pm (RTÉ 2 & ITV)

It’s only their second game of the competition but, if they’re not careful, it could also be Germany’s second last. The shock 1-0 defeat to Mexico leaves Joachim Löw’s side in a perilous position: defeat to Sweden would send the reigning world champions home in ignominy. It might seem unlikely but Germany failed to impress against Mexico and for all their guile they appear to be lacking options up front. Timo Werner may have scored 21 goals for Leipzig this season but the 22-year-old was found wanting last weekend as he spurned a number of opportunities. Löw resorted to throwing on much-maligned veteran Mario Gomez for the last 10 minutes. Gomez has scored just six goals for Germany in the last six years. Having said that, they should be too strong for Sweden. I think. There’s no real way of knowing. Prediction: Germany 2-0 Sweden Group H Poland v Colombia Sunday at 7pm (RTÉ 2 & ITV)

Group H looked to be fairly open heading into the tournament and so it has proved as victories for Japan and Senegal on Tuesday mean that favourites Poland and Colombia could be packing their bags a little earlier than expected. 2014 quarter-finalists Colombia lost to Japan (despite a beautifully crafty free-kick by Juan Quintero) and the Poles were undone by Senegal. Sunday evening’s clash is now effectively an elimination game with the losers heading for an embarrassingly premature exit. A draw wouldn’t be the end of the world but both sides will be very keen to pick up their first win and that should hopefully make for an exciting encounter. Possibly. It could be really boring. Prediction: Poland 2-3 Colombia Group G Belgium v England Thursday at 7pm (RTÉ 2 & ITV)

Both Belgium and England should be already qualified by the time this fixture rolls around but the result could decide who finishes first and who finishes second. Group G is opposite Group H in the draw and at the moment Senegal and Japan are in poll position to advance from that pool. Neither should realistically concern Belgium or England in the last 16. (Unless England completely crumble under the pressure. But what are the chances of that?) It will be interesting to see how England, who scraped past Tunisia in their first game, fare against a good team like Belgium. Not well, I suspect. Although, having said that, they could play great stuff and win 4-0. It’s very hard to predict. Prediction: Romelu Lukaku 3-1 England

Ireland Beat The Aussies In Cracking Second Test

Last Saturday morning the drama continued in the Australia versus Ireland series. Following on from the loss at the hands of Michael Cheika’s men in the first test the previous weekend, Ireland were chomping at the bit and looking for redemption in Melbourne. Another epic was on the cards and the second test certainly lived up to expectation. Joe Schmidt learned some lessons from the previous weekend and, to be fair to the Wallabies, the home side found it difficult to replicate the aggression from the first test. It was another cracker of a match and Johnny Sexton, who took over fly half duties from Munster-bound Joey Carbery, was on fire scoring 16 points from the boot. Captain Peter O’Mahony earned Man of the Match award by keeping David Pocock quiet and lead from the front. His fellow Munster man, hooker Niall Scannell, also gad a storming match, as did Leinster’s Tadhg Furlong who scored a fantastic try and surely cemented his spot as the best tight head in the game. Rob Kearney credited Furlong with the best cleanout he has ever seen, clearing Pocock out of a certain steal in the 40th minute. This man is only getting better with every cap. Tadhg Beirne was epic, earning his first Irish cap and playing as if he had 100 caps. This guy is a very exciting prospect for Munster and Ireland alike. In a highly entertaining match, there was always drama and with Jack McGrath earning a silly yellow with a few minutes to go, it looked like he may have let the home side back in. However, Ireland went

on to win and leave the series in the balance with a huge match ahead in Sydney tomorrow. Here’s hoping the lads can follow up last week’s first victory on Australian soil in almost 40 years with a second win in a week!

MUNSTER STROKEPLAY: A marvellous performance by Damien Fleming in the Senior Gents grade at Lakeside in Templemore on Sunday as he very nearly replicated Derry McCarthy’s achievement of winning the 1995 competition at the same venue with a second place finish after his 19 under par score saw him finish one behind the winner, Limerick’s Kieran Earls. John McGrath finished ninth overall with a score of 13 under par as Kieran Fitzpatrick also made the playoff for Saturday’s Intermediate event. Dr Crokes Club

County League Division 1 - Round 7. Played in Lewis Road on Saturday 16th of June. Killarney Legion 1-11 Dr Crokes 0-19. In a game which was a shoot-out from the start to finish with neither side employing sweepers we ran out in the end winners by five points. We enjoyed territorial advantage in the first half and would have to be pleased of our score of twelve points at the interval. Our opponents with far less chances managed 1-3 in this first half. This left them six points in arrears but with everything to play for in the second half. Legion were well on top in the first ten minutes of the second half, adding on three points without reply in this period. They were also denied a goal by our keeper Johnny O’Leary who mad a great save in the 38th minute. We had three unanswered points in the next five minutes to leave us six points ahead again as we entered the last quarter. Both teams exchanged points on a few occasions in the last fifteen minutes. Our opponents did get the deficit down to four points at one stage but we had the last score, a point in injury time. This gave us victory by five points. Both managements were probably happy enough with the displays of their team. I was happy that we had a good team display with outstanding individual displays by Johnny Buckley and Tony Brosnan. Our mentors might have been disappointed that we hardly created any goal scoring chances.

Fossa GAA

Seniors: Fossa had a hugely important win over Tarbert on Sunday in the county league. It’s never easy to win away from home and this game was no exception. The first half was closely contested with very little between the teams at any stage, Tarbert opened the scoring but Paudie Clifford kept Fossa in touch with two points from play, then in the 8th minute Paudie won a Tarbert kick out and took off on one of those mazy runs before cracking the ball to the corner of the net for an absolutely brilliant goal. Tarbert fought back to take the lead again but scores from Tadhg O’Shea and a fantastic long range point by Fintan Coffey left the sides all square at the break, Fossa 1-05, Tarbert 0-08. Fossa started the second half very well and aided by the wind they built up a three point lead with some great scores from Tadhg O’Shea and Donald O’Sullivan. Tarbert wouldn’t go away and kicked a few scores of their own, the exchanges were tough and uncompromising at this stage but Fossa held their discipline and in the last fifteen minutes of the game they really stepped up to the mark. Fintan Coffey, Paudie Clifford and Cian O’Shea won some serious ball around the middle of the field, Lorcan Daly played brilliantly at centre forward, Mark Dennehy and Kevin O’Sullivan stopped anything coming through the middle and Fossa kicked on with some brilliant points from Fintan Coffey, Lorcan Daly, Donald O’Sullivan and Tadhg O’Shea to seal a great win on a score of 1-14 to 0-12. This was a gutsy performance with every player giving their all, even though we lost Anthony Wharton to injury before half time, Paddy Sheehan slotted into full back and Mark Donnellan came on to do a good job, Brian Walsh came on and made a big impact when legs were tiring towards the end so overall it was a good day out and the result was very important in regard to our chances of gaining promotion at the end of the year.

SENIOR FOOTBALL CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE RD 7: Kilcummin 3-14 Listowel 2-2. Despite trailing by two points at half time our lads went on to control the second half and ran out convincing winners in the end. Kelvin Teahan scored a fine goal in the first half and Oscar O’Connor became a “super Sub” when he came on late in the game to get two fine goals. Donal Maher, Kevin Gorman, Chris O’Leary and Kelvin Teahan showed well on this occasion. KILCUMMIN GAA LOTTO: There was no winner on Sunday 17th June, 2018. Numbers drawn were 10,13,23,25. Next Draw Sunday, 1st July 2018. Jackpot now €12,000.

Killarney Legion

CO.LEAGUE: Save for the middle 10 minutes of the first half this local derby was very competitive played in mild windy conditions in front of a fine crowd. Crokes raced into an early 3 points lead but this was soon erased when Conor Keane applied a neat finish to the net which was quickly followed by a Billy Maguire point. It was at this stage that Crokes hit a purple patch scoring 7 points before Finbarr Murphy steadied the ship with a fine point. A good finish to the half saw the deficit down to a manageable 6 points. With

22.06.18

wind assistance, we started the second half with purpose scoring 3 fast points and by the 3/4 stage the game was in the melting pot with only 3 points between the sides. Try as they might we could not bridge the gap with Conor Keane thwarted by a fine save by the Crokes custodian and so the Crokes ran out 0-19 to 1-12 winners. Bearing in mind that as many as 10 players will be added to the panel come County Championship time it was a most competent performance by a depleted squad and with continued hard work by the panel and management on the training ground the 2 Championships in the Autumn can be looked forward to with anticipation. The next month sees some vital county league action with the immediate priority being a trip to Rathmore on the weekend of June 30th/July 1st. E.K.JUNIOR LEAGUE: Killarney Legion 2-20 Scartaglin 0-4. CÚL CAMPS: It’s nearly that time of year again when the highly successful G.A.A.Cúl Camps take place. The event has grown year on year and this year takes place from July 2nd.- 6th.Mon. Friday,10 a.m. - 2.30 p.m. Great value as there is a sliding scale for families with more than one child. LOTTO: Winning numbers 13, 21, 25, 27. No winner. Next week’s jackpot €9,600.
