Editor’s View

22.12.17 Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Just Not Good Enough

NEWS that a lung cancer patient whose diagnosis was missed at University Hospital Kerry no longer has the option of surgery is distressing and alarming in the extreme. The patient, whose diagnosis was missed in May, is now undergoing non-surgical treatment elsewhere. And more “abnormalities” could be found in the UHK review, it emerged this week, with fears there may be further missed cancer diagnoses among the 28,000 scans, x-rays and ultrasounds

that are yet to be reviewed at University Hospital Kerry. It is just not good enough that the public were only informed a week before Christmas of the review which got underway in October. Unsurprisingly, members of the regional health forum have been highly critical of the handling of the matter. Dr Claire O’Brien, the facility’s clinical director, said GPs and consultants had raised issues about the work of the individual at the centre of the review, news of which became public on Sunday. Some 46,000

Music

Brides & Grooms Star In Talented Tom’s Video

NOT only has his new single been wowing music lovers everywhere but the mesmerising video with Killarney singer-songwriter Tom Lucey’s song My Love has also won many fans. The video stars his parents on their wedding day as well as three other couples close to Tom. “The video features four couples, my parents Joan and Danny, my cousin Denice Lucey and her husband Aaron Brosnan, my friends Anthony O’Connor and his wife Michelle and my late grandparents, Nancy and Mike Lucey, dancing at my parents’ wedding,” said Tom. The song was recorded in Little Dylan Studios, Faha, with producer Brendan O’Connor. Brendan and Kieran Healy perform on the track, as do Rhonda Healy, Tracey Kerins, Ashley Kerins and Patrick O’Connor with Aoibhe O’Connor providing backing vocals. My Love currently has almost 50,000 views on Facebook. You can check it out also on Apple Music, Spotify and iTunes.

scans related to about 26,000 patients are being examined as part of a “look back” exercise. The South/South West Hospital Group, of which the hospital is a member, confirmed it was investigating patient safety concerns after being notified of the three serious reportable events. The person concerned no longer works at the hospital. Dr O’Brien said there were some incidents which drew attention but none as serious as the three cancer misdiagnoses which doctors identified in late July. But she said

the public could be reassured that only 21 people needed to be contacted after the examination of some 18,000 scans to date. Dr O’Brien said she was concerned about reputational damage to the hospital which serves Kerry, parts of west and north Cork, and west Limerick. She said the hospital had followed “HSE protocol” in not informing the public of the concerns. · The UHK helpline number is 1800742-900 and the period in question is from March 2016 to July 2017

Crackdown On Misuse Of Disabled Parking Bays WE ARE delighted to welcome news that Kerry County Council and An Garda Siochána are determined to roll out a campaign to highlight the inappropriate use of disabled parking bays and permits. They have confirmed that Operation Enable, which has already started in Tralee, is to come to Killarney and other Kerry towns. Between 8am and noon on December 8 alone in Tralee, five motorists had been detected parking in a disabled parking bay without the required permit, one motorist had been detected using a permit belonging to a deceased permit holder, and three other incidents were being investigated. Only permits that are provided by the Irish Wheel-

chair Association (IWA) and the Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland (DDAI) are legitimate for usage in disabled parking bays. This is something we at Killarney Advertiser have campaigned on this year, highlighting the importance of the Garda operation when it unfolded at national level. Finally something is being done about this morally reprehensible act. If you have reason to believe someone is parked illegally in a disabled parking space take a record of the vehicle registration, time and date and report it to the Gardaí. Do not confront the individual. Killarney Advertiser Editor Eve Kelliher and Garda Michael Milner, Killarney Gardaí.

Business of the Week

Slimming World| 086-8423317 | Meets at The Brehon Hotel and the Killarney Plaza Hotel

Slimmers In Killarney Lose 918 Stone

S

UPER SLIMMERS in Killarney have lost a whopping 12845 pounds in weight – that’s the equivalent of six tonnes! Altogether the members of the Tuesday Brehon and Thursday Plaza Slimming World groups are now 918 stone lighter than they were when consultant Sorcha Domican took over the groups in June. The members, who attend the group every week, follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan created by the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg. Sorcha herself has lost 4 stone 7 pounds to drop from a size 16 to a size 10/12. She says: “Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you’re never hungry so I’ve never felt as though I was on a diet. Before I joined Slimming World I thought losing weight meant going to the gym and counting calories. But now I know it’s about making healthier choices about food and be-

coming a bit more active. “Reaching this milestone as a group just proves the huge change that we’ve all made to our lives, some people who’ve lost big amounts of weight have probably even saved their lives. “It’s brilliant to celebrate together as well because that’s how we’ve been losing weight – together. Every week we support and encourage each other and share tips and recipes, and on top of that we have a lot of fun. “I’m delighted that my members have lost weight so beautifully and would like to thank all my amazing members who have supported my Slimming World groups since I took over, I love every second of being in group with my members, they make my job so worthwhile!” Slimming has never been more important, added Sorcha. “Obesity is a problem that we can fix and I just want to help even more people to make real changes for life – there’s no better job satisfaction than that!” she said. Sorcha’s group is held in The Brehon Hotel every Tuesday at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm and in

the Killarney Plaza Hotel every Thursday morning at 9.30am and 11.30am. For more information or to join call Sorcha on 086-8423317. Slimming World wishes everyone a happy Christmas and New Year.

Airport Has Over A Million Reasons To Celebrate THE festive season has had an early take-off at Kerry Airport as it received a windfall of over €1 million towards operating costs. The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin welcomed the news from his Departmental colleague Minister Ross. “This grant is in addition to the €583,000 already allocated to Kerry, bringing the total grant for the year

to close to €1.6m.” Kerry Airport remains a key part of the infrastructure of Kerry for connectivity of the county’s tourism product as well as for business, added Minister Griffin. The Regional Airports Programme supports necessary safety and security investments and activities by these airports to enable them to continue to contribute to enhanced regional connectivity for businesses and tourism.

Town Talk

‘We Are Not Happy With The Way This Make Matter Was Dealt With’ Protesters Their Voices Heard AS 14 ASYLUM SEEKERS moved into Linden House in Killarney early this week, two members of Kerry County Council have said they will be joining forces with the Killarney Asylum Seekers Initiative (KASI) to help ensure the new residents are supported and successfully integrated into the community. But the councillors, Cllrs Niall Kelleher, mayor of Killarney Municipal District, and Cllr John Joe Culloty, told Killarney Advertiser they were unhappy with the absence of communication from the Department of Justice with the community. Cllr Kelleher and Cllr Culloty met with the owner and management of the facility on Monday afternoon. “We are not happy with the process in which this matter was dealt with by the Department of Justice, especially the absence of any communication,” said Mayor Niall Kelleher. “We are addressing this with the Department and it is not a matter

for the residents of Linden House.” There are currently two other asylum facilities in Killarney, one female-only residence and another family-only residence. This facility will be male-only, as it was previously, noted the councillors. It will cater for a maximum of 55 residents and will be staffed 24/7. The management of Linden House will work closely with the Killarney Asylum Seekers Initiative (KASI). “We will also be making contact with KASI to assist in every way possible to ensure the new residents are supported and successfully integrated into the commu-

nity,” stated Cllrs Kelleher and Culloty. Meanwhile, Kerry County Council member Michael Gleeson also welcomed the new residents. “‘Killarney of the Welcomes’ is not just a bland slogan. It is the very essence of who we are in Killarney and Kerry and what we are about. We must always seek to give shelter to those from foreign lands who are fleeing violence. Such people are most unlikely to be a threat to the people of Killarney. They are rather our brothers and sisters in distress and they need our hospitality in their hour of need,” he said.

District Community Alert Meeting SOME 40 representatives of every Community Alert group in the Killarney, Mid Kerry, East Kerry and Kenmare areas gathered for the annual District Community Alert meeting in Torc Hotel, Lissivigeen, last week. The meeting, which was also attended by Community Alert liaison gardaí, was chaired by Garda Finbarr Donovan, Killarney Garda Station. Dermot Cronin of Muintir na Tire gave a presentation on the new “Text Alert” system run by Muintir na Tire and the new “app” the group hopes to introduce in 2018. Mr Cronin spoke about the changes to the Senior Alert scheme and encouraged everyone to record serial numbers of any valuable property they own. Superintendent Flor Mur-

phy of Killarney Gardaí gave a presentation on the latest crime statistics for the Killarney District and said he anticipated that a Garda CCTV system will be up and running by the end of 2018. He stated that resources are still an issue for An Garda Siochána but welcomed the fact

that seven new probationary gardaí have started in Killarney in 2017. Superintendent Murphy reminded people that An Garda Siochána is a 24/7 service and encouraged them to report any concerns they may have in relation to suspicious people or vehicles.

Fundraiser

Christmas Day Dip THE ANNUAL Christmas Day Dip at Dundag takes place again this Monday in aid of depression support charity Aware. Organised by Tiernaboul woman Niki McCarthy in memory of

SOME 30 people protested outside Linden House on New Road last Saturday as the first of 55 male asylum seekers to be housed there arrived. The placards highlighted the 3,000 homeless children in Ireland and called for local people to be housed first. Linden House, a former guesthouse, has previously accommodated asylum seekers. Independent councillor Donal Grady addressed the gathering, before handing in a petition stating the concerns of the protesters, and outlining the lack of consultation with the community. “Firstly, to make clear we believe that people from war-torn areas like Iraq and Syria should be accepted in our country,” Cllr Grady said before outlining concerns about the lack of consultation. Days ahead of the confirmation that Linden House would be used as an accommodation centre for asylum seekers, Kerry County Council member Donal Grady had called for the property to open its doors to homeless people in Killarney. Speaking to Killarney Advertiser, the former mayor of Killarney said: “We should look after our own first. There are at least 25 homeless people in Killarney at the moment and people who are homeless in this town continue to be sent to Tralee for accommodation.”

her sister, Sylvan Money, the event is now in its ninth year and to date has raised just over €45,000. All are welcome to take part on December 25, at 11am, and as with previous years, you can

wear fancy dress. “If people want to take part and raise sponsorship then contact me on nikimcmoney@gmail.com or via the Facebook page Killarney Christmas Day Dip,” said Niki.

OF COURSE asylum seekers should be welcomed into our community but what has irked many in relation to the arrival of new residents at the former Linden House is the fact that the process was not transparent. The lack of consultation with the community was the main bone of contention, while others questioned to the suitability of the building’s size as well as its location. How many other properties, one wonders, would have been better suited to housing such a large number of residents?

Gardaí Advise On Enjoying A Safe Festive Season

Driving Home For Christmas Carpool Killarney-oke

Words: Eve Kelliher

THE Christmas Eve classic song Driving Home For Christmas takes on a whole new dimension in Killarney this Sunday, December 24, when we broadcast our festive edition of Carpool Killarney-oke. Killarney Advertiser’s Kieran Healy takes the wheel James Corden-style and is joined by his fellow talented crooners, Conor, Derek and Karl O’Leary – known throughout town and well beyond as The Three O’s.

They are guaranteed to amp up the seasonal cheer factor as they deliver a veritable soundtrack to Christmas with a whole host of festive favourites. In addition, they chat about Killarney Musical Society, which of the three they think is the best singer and – wait for it – the chances of our Kieran joining The Three O’s……watch this space! Check out this essential viewing on our website, killarneyadvertiser.ie and Facebook page at 5pm on Christmas Eve.

It’s A Kind Of Magic The Chatroom

Words: Eve Kelliher

IT’S hard to freak Kieran Healy out but that’s just what the renowned Keith Barry managed to do when he carried out a little bit of brain hacking during his very welcome visit to our Chatroom. Keith provided a truly fascinating preview of his upcoming Magic Madhouse tour which is coming to the INEC on December 30. Tickets are available for the show and as ever with a Keith Barry production, it really promises to

Dylan Studios in Faha with producer Brendan O’Connor. A presenter with Radio Kerry, Cathal is also well known for his gigs in Charlie Foley’s bar every Saturday.

KILLARNEY ADVERTISER editor Eve Kelliher hosted Kerry crime prevention officer Sergeant Jim Foley and Garda Michael Milner of Killarney Gardaí in The Newsroom this week. Both had useful and timely safety advice. The festive season is a time that many of us like to socialise and if you are enjoying a night out, making a plan is key, said Sergeant Foley. “Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be home,” he said. “Carry your mobile phone (charged!). If one of the group has too much to drink – ensure they get home safely! If you are out with a group – watch out for one another, remember there is safety in numbers. Plan your trip home or arrange a lift, if you have to walk home use well lit routes.” Sergeant Foley reinforced the message to never drink and drive. “If you’re the designated

driver, park your car in a well lit area and don’t leave property visible,” he said. Garda Milner highlighted recent incidences of distraction theft in Killarney. “When you’re out spending money, be aware that thieves are out too, looking for opportunities to commit crime,” he said. “To stay safe while you’re out shopping, take extra care when using a cash point or chip and pin. Don’t let anyone see your pin number, never write down your pin number. If you carry a handbag, keep your purse at the bottom. Never keep your wallet in your back pocket. Keep your handbag zipped at all times – crowded shopping areas are very popular with pickpockets. Don’t leave your handbag in the shopping trolley while you shop.” For more, see our Newsroom interview on our website and Facebook page.

Toe-Tapping Fun… DAVID REA from the fantastic Celtic Steps The Show called in to The Chatroom on Tuesday to talk about Celtic Steps’ amazing new DVD! The traditional Irish music and dance show is a firm favourite with locals and tourists alike and now you can enjoy a DVD of the award-winning show which will be launched worldwide in the New Year.

The DVD features a variety of some of Ireland’s much-loved classics like Raglan Road as well as songs in the Irish language, sung by Kerry native Roísín Ryan. It also features some of Celtic Steps’ favourite dance numbers such as the Kerry polka set performed by the show’s World Champion Irish dancers. Festive Message

From Killarney’s First Citizen Words: Killarney Municipal District Mayor Niall Kelleher

KMRT members Alan Wallace and Tony Holmes are all set for the longest and darkest nights of the year after collecting 16 new high-powered rechargeable LED Lenser torches from Owen Casey, Casey’s, College Street.

Stay Safe On The Mountains

Words: Eve Kelliher

SNOW-COVERED mountains can provide an incredible backdrop for winter walking or climbing but with the short winter days, cold weather and dark skies, it’s more important than ever to plan ahead to ensure you stay safe out there. Kerry Mountain Rescue Service urges you to make sure you start your walk early enough in the day; be aware of what time it gets dark and allow for a change in the weather too. Plan your day and route, taking into consideration a reliable mountain weather forecast.

“Leave a route plan with a responsible person. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the weather during the day,” said Alan Wallace of KMRT. “Always be prepared to turn back or take a shorter route. The mountains will still be there another day.” Whatever your plans, you’ll need a good torch and spare batteries in case you get delayed. “People sometimes prefer to carry a second lightweight torch so they don’t need to change batteries in the cold or the dark if the head torch packs up,” added Alan. If you need to call out mountain res-

cue, first make a note of all relevant details: location (with a grid reference if possible), name, gender and age of casualty, nature of injuries or emergency, number of people in the party, and your mobile phone number. Dial 999 or 112, then ask for ‘‘Mountain Rescue’. In 2017, KMRT, which has 35 volunteers, assisted 37 people on the mountains in 29 responses to calls for assistance. There was one fatality on Kerry’s mountains this year. Mountain rescue hours reached 1144, with team training hours standing at 1115.

THE switching on of the Killarney Memory Tree sparked huge excitement in town on Monday. The Memory Tree, in the grounds of Holy Cross Mercy National School on New Road, commemorates loved ones who were also remembered in a special Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral on Wednesday. Lights can be ordered for a

suggested donation of €5 and all proceeds will go to Holy Cross Mercy School. The Memory Tree will be lit nightly until January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany. Lights are available from local shops, Holy Cross Mercy School, staff members of Holy Cross Mercy School and members of the school’s parents’ association.

Soccer In Memory Of Stephen THE annual soccer tournament in memory of Stephen Lyne takes place on December 27 in Killarney Celtic Park. This is the second year of the tournament, which is held in aid of the Stephen Lyne Foundation. Stephen’s parents, family and friends are looking forward to hosting the event.

“Both myself and Denis are delighted with the idea of a perpetual cup in memory of Stephen as Stephen was a skilled soccer player who was able to dribble a ball from the minute he could walk!” said Lotte. “One of the last projects he was involved with before he died was the organisation of a soccer tournament for charity.”

AS MAYOR and Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas and joyous New Year. It has been an honour to serve as Killarney’s first citizen and I am tremendously proud of what has been achieved over the last number of months and I look forward to the New Year where I will continue working for Killarney and all its citizens. A highlight of this term has certainly been participating in the Christmas in Killarney parades over the last number of weeks and I want to commend my fellow committee members on how wonderful Killarney looks. I want to thank the volunteers and businesses who have gotten involved in the festival. Nollaig shona agus Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh.

Season’s Greetings

From Mayor Of Kerry Words: Kerry Mayor John Sheahan AS MAYOR of Kerry, I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and good health for 2018. I want the very best for our community this festive season and the year ahead. We are all hoping that good fortune will come our way. For the farming community, we hope the weather will stay kind and let us hope that the roads remain safe for all road users. WRITING in these pages in the wake of calls by the Irish Wildlife Trust on the United Nations body Unesco – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation – to strip the Killarney National Park of its biosphere reserve status, our columnist Anne Lucey noted how locally “the silence is deafening”. She noted: “Maybe the state of the rhododendron, deer mismanagement and upland burning is accepted. Maybe there is a feeling the least said, the better.” Adding that the world biosphere reserve national park is being choked from the ground up, she wrote: “Take a drive along the Kenmare Road, the Mill Road, walk the Queen’s Drive and now the Yew woods near Muckross Abbey, and there is a sea of rhododendron marching on the oaks and the beech and everything else.” In the 1980s regular clean-ups of the National Park included help from the Killarney Girl Guides while families and individuals cut their own path. “There is little point giving out about the NPWS where staff numbers have been cut to shreds. Significant resources needed to tackle problem RHODODENDRON upsets the natural ecosystem, according to Killarney Advertiser’s science columnist Trevor O’Donoghue. The spread of rhododendron is a significant problem that requires significant resources to solve, he notes. Killarney National Park is known worldwide for its unique and precious habitats and species. “Extensive, mature oak woodlands, yew forests, large stands of holly and the lakes play host to our red deer, wild trout and salmon, biologically significant populations of arbutus, and the Killarney fern and Killarney shad,” he splendor “Rhododendron ponticum on said. all its in the other rhododendron Thehand is a nasty, insidious plant, Gardens. pretty flowers and shiny leaves Muckross boasting in control muchand beloved under by the Victorians. A trip through the park will show the extent of the problem,” he said. “Our woodlands are being taken over and unless a serious effort is made to tackle the problem, our national park is under threat.”

A constant battle since the early-1980s THE fight against rhododendron has been “a constant battle since the early ’80s”, according to Donal Whitty O’Sullivan, Killarney. Donal, a volunteer with the Killarney Tidy Towns group Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal, which organises clean-ups in the national park, said: “The rhododendron in my opinion can be very romantic and beautiful in full bloom and when it’s kept under control. But when its gets out of control, it is invasive and destroying our oak wood's and other woodlands. Rihanna, Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway’s boots are made for walking in the first official teaser for their all-female Ocean’s Eleven spin-off Ocean’s Eight. The hugely-anticipated heist movie has jampacked so much exciting action into a 15-second teaser. Ocean’s Eight connects to its predecessor by building its heist around Debbie Ocean (Bullock), the estranged sister of George Clooney’s late Danny Ocean from the original series. And we specify ‘late Danny Ocean’ because there’s a very quick shot of Debbie visiting the grave of her older brother, who apparently dies in 2018. Keep in mind that Clooney is producing the project, so all might not be as it seems.

THIRTEEN people requiring cataract surgery had to travel from Kerry and Cork to Belfast last weekend where they underwent surgery carried out under the cross-border directive. The group, aged in their 70s and 80s, travelled eight hours to Kingsbridge Hospital in Belfast for their operations. Of the 30,792 waiting for eye treatment up to September last year, almost half, 14,352,

were from Kerry and Cork. Some people have been told they will have to wait up to two years for their first consultation, while others have been facing a waiting list of up to four years for an operation. Last weekend’s bus service was arranged by Kerry Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae and West Cork TD Michael Collins, who said: “Really it’s a case of Belfast or go blind.”

Jerusalem: UN Resolution Rejects Trump’s Declaration THE UN General Assembly has decisively backed a resolution effectively calling on the US to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The text says that any decisions regarding the status of the city are “null and void” and must be cancelled. The non-binding resolution was approved by 128 states, with 35 abstaining and nine others voting against. It came after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut financial aid to those who backed the resolution. Speaking to reporters at the White House, the US president said: “They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them

vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care.” Before the vote, the Palestinian foreign minister urged member states to reject “blackmail and intimidation”. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, said it would reject the anticipated result “outright” and dismissed the UN as a “house of lies”. How did UN members vote? The nine who voted against the resolution were the US, Israel, Guatemala, Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo. Among the 35 abstaining were Canada and Mexico. Those voting in favour included the other four permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia and the UK) as well as key US allies in the Muslim world. Twenty-one countries did not turn up for the vote.

Killarney Snappers Put Compelling Stories In The Picture Words: Eve Kelliher A PICTURE paints a thousand words and that’s certainly true of a display staged in Dublin thanks to two leading Killarney photographers. Julien Behal and Valerie O’Sullivan are involved in a special National Lottery exhibition which opened on Wednesday and which will run until tomorrow, Saturday. The outside photography exhibition, at St Stephen’s Green, Dublin, features the beneficiaries who have enjoyed windfalls from the

National Lottery Good Causes funding – some of whom are from Kerry. Julien travelled the length and breadth of Ireland to photograph a variety of organisations and Valerie captured images of Kerry beneficiaries Rathmore Social Action Group and Finuge Freewheelers. “All the pictures tell the compelling stories of the impact of Good Causes funding to communities and organisations all over Ireland,” Julien told Killarney Advertiser.

RTÉ Pays Sean Gallagher ‘Substantial Damages’ In ‘Tweetgate’ Case THE case taken by Sean Gallagher against RTÉ has been settled, with the former Presidential Election candidate said to have received “substantial damages”. The High Court was told of the settlement at a scheduled pre-trial hearing. A trial had been due to begin early next year. The size of the settlement was not disclosed but it involved an agreement

from RTÉ to issue an apology to Mr Gallagher. Mr Gallagher sued the broadcaster for damages over the “Tweetgate” incident during the 2011 presidential election campaign. This related to a tweet read out by presenter Pat Kenny during the final televised debate of the campaign, prior to which Mr Gallagher was regarded as the frontrunner.

Gardaí Seize Drugs Worth €2.8M TWO men were arrested after a “significant” amount of drugs were discovered in north Dublin. As part of ongoing investigations targeting serious organised criminal activity in Dublin two cars were stopped in the Drumcondra area on Wednesday.

During the search, five kilos of cannabis herb was seized. Two men (25 and 30) were arrested at the scene and are currently detained at Finglas Garda Station under the provisions of Section 2- Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996. The total amount of drugs seized is in excess of €2.8million.

Tralee Among Those Likely To Be Prioritised For Flood Defence Works TRALEE is likely to be among those prioritised for flood defence works in the New Year. One of the country’s largest individual allocations in flood defence funding is expected to go to Kerry. The county, which was affected by serious flooding in December 2015, is to receive around €30 million of a €260m fund, it is reported. Almost 8,000 homes are to be protected by new flood defences as part of the plan. A long-awaited study of at-risk areas will clear the way for 47 schemes across the country, including more than €55m for

Limerick city and environs alone. But it is believed up to €1bn will be needed to ultimately protect the country from floods. The Minister of State for the Office of Public Works & Flood Relief, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, accompanied by the Minister for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, today gave an update on progress with the whole of Government response to Flood Risk Management. The Office of Public Works will announce the 47 regions most at risk to flooding around the country early in January.

Kerry Pub Issues Invite To Ed Sheeran A KERRY pub has issued an invite to international pop star Ed Sheeran after he namechecked the premises on The Late Late Show. The singer-songwriter praised a video clip he saw featuring the Top of the Coom,

Ireland’s highest pub, near Kilgarvan. The Grammy winner said he saw three elderly gentlemen in the clip, with one feeding a sheep. Top of the Coom proprietor Eileen Creedon has since extended an official invite to the star.

Clodagh’s Family Still Searching For Answers THE SOLICITOR OF the family of Clodagh Hawe has said that that “they’re people of extraordinary dignity” following the following the verdict at this week’s inquest into the Hawe family deaths. The inquests into the deaths of Alan Hawe (40), Clodagh (39), Liam (13), Niall (11) and Ryan (6) at their home at Oakdene, Barcony, Ballyjamesduff on August 28, 2016, were concluded at Cavan courthouse. A jury recorded death by suicide for Alan Hawe and that of unlawful killing in regards to his wife and three children. Speaking on RTÉ Radio One’s Drivetime the Coll family solicitor, Liam Keane, said that the family has

been through a “terrible ordeal” throughout the inquest. Deputy school principal Alan Hawe outlined his reasons for his actions in three-page, handwritten letter found at the family home. But in his explanation, Hawe, who meticulously planned the murder, still fails to shed light on the “fall from grace” which prompted him to wipe out his family. He wrote after killing them he was “sorry” for the way he had “murdered them all”, but insisted there was no other way. He said he had been thinking about killing himself for some time but did not want to leave his three sons orphans.

Will It Be A White Christmas? IT’S the question on everyone’s lips – what’s the weather going to be like on Christmas Day? It’s been several years since we’ve seen snow at Christmas and for those of you wondering, Met Éireann have released their early Christmas Day weather predictions. While all signs point to the fact that it’s going to be a cold one, it doesn’t look like there’s going to be any snow. This week has been mild enough so far and it looks like it’s set to remain like that with

some showers and fog today, Friday, with temperatures remaining impressively high at 10 to 12C. Tomorrow, Saturday, is predicted to be breezy with mist and drizzle. It’s going to be a dull and windy Christmas Eve with some rain later in the evening with rain forecasted for Christmas Day and temperatures set to dip in the evening and frost expected overnight. Will we have to wait until next year for a white Christmas?

‘Slow Down’ Plea By Best Friend Of Road Accident Victim THE best friend of a student who died in a road tragedy has told how she would “trade places if I could” as calls were made to reduce the speed limit on the road, reports the Irish Independent. Denise Crowley (26) died on December 1 after she was struck by a car while crossing the road. The UCC computer science student was crossing the N22 at Glenflesk village, when she was killed instantly. Now the community and local councillors want to see the 100km speed limit cut to at least 60km in the wake of the death. Ms Crowley’s best friend has asked the country to remember a young woman who meant so much to so many. “Denise was my best friend, she is the reason I’m standing today,” Kerry Heffernan said. “Denise came into my life when everything was going wrong and I didn’t know what to do anymore. “She brightened up my entire life. She was there before and after my daughter was born. If I could trade places with her I

would. But she’d give out, and tell me I need to take care of my daughter.” Ms Crowley is one of 28 pedestrians out of 152 road deaths to take place this year. Local residents and Gardaí have raised concerns about the N22 to the road authorities, along with local councillors. Many people believe the speed limit should be dropped to 60kmh.

Support For Serfs Of O’Donoghue’s Rock Award I WOULD like to support Killarney Advertiser’s idea to create an award to honour a local by a local. I would like to nominate Michael Leane for this award. Michael is a native of Killarney who, among other things, was a founding member of Killarney Credit Union and was a member of the initial study group that founded the CU. He, along with others, was relentless in finding a permanent home for the CU after its many years of nomadic existence. All his work was carried out in a voluntary capacity for which he received no financial reward. He was truly selfless for the people of Killarney and always was willing to help those who had queries.

Water Quality Query

AT THE December 2017 monthly meeting of Killarney Municipal District, I asked Kerry County Council to give an update on water quality in Lough Guitane during the months of September, October and November 2017. Kerry County Council replied that as part of Water Frameworks requirements Lough Guitane is sampled 12 times per year by Kerry County Council staff. As per EPA National requirements, these samples are analysed by the EPA Laboratory in Kilkenny for a range of significant parameters. During sampling, Kerry County Council’s laboratory staff also take samples which are monitored

The Bookworm

Reviewed: Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak IT’S CHRISTMAS, and for the first time in years the entire Birch family will be under one roof. Even Emma and Andrew’s elder daughter—who is usually off saving the world—will be joining them at Weyfield Hall, their aging country estate. But Olivia, a doctor, is only coming home because she has to. Having just returned from treating an epidemic abroad, she’s been told she must stay in quarantine for a week…and so too should her family. For the next seven days, the Birches are locked down, cut off from the rest of humanity—and even decent Wi-Fi—and forced into each other’s

orbits. Younger, unabashedly frivolous daughter Phoebe is fixated on her upcoming wedding, while Olivia deals with the culture shock of being immersed in first-world problems. As Andrew sequesters himself in his study writing scathing restaurant reviews and remembering his glory days as a war correspondent, Emma hides a secret that will turn the whole family upside down. In close proximity, not much can stay hidden for long, and as revelations and long-held tensions come to light, nothing is more shocking than the unexpected guest who’s about to arrive…

In the sequel, Marty and Dr. Brown travel into the future, only to discover their own time transformed to nightmarish version of Hill Valley, Mar-

ty’s father has been murdered and Biff Tannen, Marty’s nemesis, has profited. In the final chapter, Marty obtains a 70-yearold message from the time-traveling Doc Brown, in which he informs Marty that he has retired to a small town in the Old West. Marty then finds out that the Doc was murdered shortly after sending the letter. In order to save his friend, Marty will have to travel back in time, disentangle a lovestruck Doc from a local schoolmarm, and repair the DeLorean -- all while avoiding a posse of gunslingers.

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio has some tips on looking after your hands and nails CREATIVE NAIL DESIGN (CND) first created Shellac and Gelish back in May 2010 and revolutionised the nail industry. Shellac is a hybrid, meaning it is half nail polish and half gel. The product is applied like a polish to the natural nail and is cured via a UV light or LED (we have both at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio). Because the product is cured, there is zero drying time. When applied and removed correctly Shellac should not cause any damage to your nails. Shellac can last flawlessly, with normal wear and tear, for at least 14 days. Be sure to wear gloves if you’re doing tough jobs like household cleaning or gardening. Remember your nails as jewels, not tools. Use cuticle oil and moisturise daily to replace lost moisture to your skin and nails. If you do experience a chip make sure you don’t pick or pull it as this will cause damage to your nails underneath. You can lightly file your nail to disguise the chip. Peeling off the shellac can seriously damage the natural nail underneath. A paraffin moisturising hand treatment is a fantastic extra with Shellac or Gelish or luxury manicure. Your hands or feet will be dipped twice times quickly into a small tub of heated paraffin wax. The paraffin is often scented with soothing essential oils. After several layers are added, the wax will be covered in a plastic bag, wrapped in hot gloves and you can relax as the benefits kick in. The wax will trap the heat against your skin as it hardens, opening the pores. Once the wax is completely cooled it will be pulled away, taking dead skin cells along with it. This treatment can be experience as a stand-alone treatment as the benefits are amazing for arthritis, dry skin, sore joints, rough skin, dehydrated nails. •

We will be open over the Christmas holidays for all your beauty needs, call me, Jill, on 064-6632966 for appointments

Great Gatsby Night at The Brehon THE BREHON will turn back the clock to the Roaring Twenties this January 6 to celebrate Women’s Christmas. Toast the Prohibition Era with a glass of Prosecco on arrival then sit down to a sumptuous Gatsby-themed banquet before dancing the night away before reliving the fun and frolics of the jazz age with live music from The Swing Cats. Think flapper dresses, fringing, beading, and feathers… the very attire worn while attending one of the in-

famous Jay Gatsby’s extravagant parties. The Roaring Twenties heralded the beginning of a new era for women, flappers flouted their contempt for traditional constraints. They now had the right to vote, they worked outside of the home and they challenged women’s traditional societal roles. What better way to celebrate Women’s Christmas? Tickets cost €49 per person; for more details email info@thebrehon.com or phone 064-6630700.

Soundtrack To A Perfect Day ON THE run-up to our wedding I was given lots of advice and tips. One idea was to get a new perfume so I would always associate that scent with our special day. While I loved my choice of perfume I don’t think my memory will be of its aroma. I think I will remember the soundtrack to the day... From the moment my mom hollered the cheeriest “Morning!’” to the moment we sang the last note of the National Anthem at some ungodly hour. We were absolutely blessed with beautiful sounds for the entire day and each sound came from people that had such great energy and genuinely wished us well. I knew most of our musicians, singers and dancers personally, which added incredible warmth to the day. I was so excited to have Catherine Teahan sing at our ceremony. I was a huge fan

Grand Tour Has A New Test Driver

THE second instalment of Grand Tour Season 2 was a return to form. Episode 2 shook off the cobwebs and awkwardness of the season two opener. The formula that made the trio such a success with their previous employer is still a work in progress on Grand Tour. One element of success was the Stig; however, rights to the Stig remains with their previous employer and they are legally bound not to conflict with the BBC’s offering. The ‘American’ was what they came up with in season one, however no one seems that upset that they have decided to drop “the American” Mike Skinner for series two. The NASCAR driver was unpopular with fans and they have spent months searching for his replacement. With one episode in the can, they’ve finally introduced her –

yes, HER – to viewers. Clarkson and co have broken new ground with their latest hire, selecting a female driver. But – and it’s a crucial but – he failed to name his new colleague during her introductory segment, despite labelling her a “phenomenal driver” and adding “we’re delighted to have her on board”. Abbie Eaton is a 25-year-old professional racer with plenty of experience – including the SAXMAX Championship, GT Cup and British GT Championship. Still, the decision to leave Eaton anonymous has not dampened fans’ enthusiasm for the show’s first female driver.

ŠKODA IRELAND has announced that despite the Irish new car market decreasing by 10% compared to 2016, Škoda has increased new car turnover by 1% to €146 million in 2017 and increased turnover from parts and accessories by 8% to €9.6 million. A growing number of customers are also availing of the competitive Škoda finance offers, with the brand loaning over €112 million to customers over the past twelve months, an increase of 5% on 2016. Škoda Ireland has also recorded market share of 6.9% which is the highest-ever share recorded by the brand in Ireland and saw the company deliver 9,056 new vehicles to customers in 2017. The growth has solidified Škoda’s position as the sixth bestselling car brand in the country for the third year in a row, as the brand now sets its sights on a top five finish in 2018.

All The World’s A Stage TALENTED youngsters have been treading the boards in style over the past week. Here we bring you a taste of the Christmas plays and concerts in the greater Killarney area, including Knockanes National School, Shrone National School and Raheen Community Playgroup in Headford. We witnessed everything from war dramas to the classic Nativity plays. The children of Raheen Community Playgroup presented their production entitled Santa’s Workshop, which was applauded by an audience of over 50 friends and family members. In addition, Santa paid a surprise visit to the children before they took to the stage.

CHRISTMAS REMEMBRANCE

‘We miss you’

BREEN

We miss the loud music Coming from your room, We miss the warmth of knowing You’re just a call away. We miss the way We fought and played We miss seeing your bright smile And bleached hair, We miss seeing you Here and there. We miss annoying you even though You liked your time alone, We miss watching you devour Your warmed scone. We miss the way you ran down the Hall, jumped to hit the light, We miss hearing you come in At night. We miss you with all our might, We miss our brother. We miss the way today, You would also be our friend, We miss you and love you Until the end. Love Mags, Kerrie and Mike XXX

12TH ANNIVERSARY DOYLE

In memory of our Daddy, Daniel J. Doyle, late of 68 St. Brendan’s Place, Killarney, who left us on the 28th December 2005. He never looked for praises, He was never one to boast, He just went on quietly working, For the ones he loved the most, His dreams were seldom spoken, His wants very few, And most of the time, His worries went unspoken too, He was there a firm foundation, Through all our storms in life, A sturdy hand to hold on to, In times of stress and strife, A true friend we could turn to, When times were good or bad, One of our greatest blessings, The man that we call Dad. Wishing our parents Rose and Daniel, A Happy Christmas in heaven. Loved and missed so much everyday xoxoxoxoxo Love you always, your daughters Mary, Louise, Cathriona, Valerie, sons-in-law And grandchildren.

BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE DILLON

Thanks also to Falconers Funeral Directors, Tramore for their professionalism, sensitivity and kindness shown to us at that difficult time. In loving memory of the Denis Breen, late of Hazelwood Drive, Upper park Road. Today is going to be heartbreaking when we visit your graveside with flowers and shed a tear. We have no gift to give you or a hug like every year. We pray u to heaven to you a Happy Christmas. Your empty fireside chair and kitchen chair still be vacant as we gather around for the tradition dinner and just think back, your not their but you are looking down upon us saying stop being upset about me just carry on I’m in spirit. The candles be burning in churches, your memory walks in our minds as we know one day you greet us at heavens gate. Life’s a journey we are passing through, so God’s garden must be beautiful as he has the best in you. On earth you worked, in heaven now you rest. Cant change the past, nor the future, if we could we would. A star at night so bright is your light, guiding us every night. Happy Christmas to a wonderful honest husband and a caring Dad Denis. Loved and remembered, never forgotten by your heartbroken wife Sheila, your 3 sons Mikey, De, Billy and daughter Sheila Mary and daughter-in-law Amy.

As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our gratitude and appreciation. The Holy Sacrifice of Mass has been offered for your intention.

Sadly missed by your parents in law Gerard and Helen Savage, brothers in law Morgan and Peter. David & Louise Savage & family. Nieces Aoife, Niamh, Grainne, Meabh & Maria and Nephew Liam.

Take our teardrops and wrap in love, Ask the wind to carry them To mom above, Miracles are very rare, but For Christmas one would do, To hear the door bell and To have you walk through,

Sometimes it seems a lifetime, Sometimes it seems a day, But in our hearts and in our minds You are never far away. Remembering you is easy We do it everyday But missing you is a heartache That never goes away.

You left such happy memories That make us laugh and cry, The memories we have together No money can buy, Theres this place in our hearts No one can fill,Missing you And always will. From all the family.

Always remembered by your daughters Marie and Ciara.

We especially wish to thank Fr Jim Lenihan, Fr Niall Howard and concelebrants of Kieran’s mass, the cathedral church choir and those who did readings and prayers of the faithful. Special thanks to Bernard Tangney, funeral director, for his kindness and professionalism, O’Shea’s funeral home, and gravediggers. The gates of heaven opened As wide as they could go, God called His angels over And put them in a row, There is a special man arriving So guide him all the way, I’ll be waiting in my garden Because this is where he’ll stay. A million tears will follow Him to his place of rest, I’m sure you have often heard I only take the best. A million tears did follow, And a lot of broken hearts Because losing such a special Dad Tore us all apart. This morning when we woke up And saw the sun above Right away we thought of you And said a loving prayer That God would bless you specially And keep you in His care. Rocking Around the C BRANCHING out took on a whole new meaning in Killarney as youngsters and the young at heart extended the hand of friendship to people in need. Santa Claus took time out from his busy schedule to switch on the lights of the 30-foot tall tree at The Brehon

Hotel which was the centre of attention at the hotel’s annual party in aid of the Society of St Vincent de Paul. With entertainment by The Gleneagle Concert Band and the Presentation School Choir, children donated to the cause and also left toys for others at the tree.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Words: Debby Looney

Garden Magic Festive flower WITH Christmas upon us it is only logical that I mention the aptly named Christmas Rose. There are few plants which give as much joy at this time of year as the Hellebore. There are many advantages to this plant, and the clue to one of them is in the name. The first part, Hellecomes from the Greek elein, to injure, and the second part, -bore, bora, which means food. So, Hellebores are poisonous, rabbits, slugs and deer avoid them. Hellebores thrive in partial shade, but prefer a well-drained humus rich soil. A waterlogged or very dry soil is unsuitable. Dappled shade is perfect as they are woodland plants. Hellebores are evergreen plants, and spread happily. They are easy plants to divide, which can be done either in early spring or September. They also self-seed, though are not invasive! One of the reasons I love Hellebores at this time of year is that they are such prolific flowerers! With names such as ‘Painted Doubles’, ‘Double Violet’, Cinnamon Snow’ and ‘Ruby Glow, there is an enormous range to choose from. They are particularly well suited to group planting, as they have great foliage for ground cover. If the foliage obscures the flowers, make sure to cut it back so you don’t miss the show! The most popular variety at this time is undoubtedly Hellesbous niger, which has snowy white flowers and is the original cottage garden favourite, the original Christmas Rose. They can be kept indoors over the festive season, just pot them into a nice bowl, top with some moss – or fresh cranberries for something a bit different!- and decorate with some baubles or Christmas pick for a pretty display. All in all my pick of the season would most certainly be the Christmas Rose, which gives joy long after the Christmas season is over!!! • Debby will be holding a gardening course in Killarney Community College on Thursdays in February; enrolment is on or before January 8

Bishop’s Christmas Message 2017 “SO the shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus lying in the manger. It was exactly as they had been told.” Luke 2:16 The heart of Christmas is amazing: that the baby born to Mary and Joseph was God coming to be with all people on earth. The Almighty, the All-Powerful came into our world as a gentle loving newborn baby. Such is “the loving kindness of the heart of our God”. He came to stay, He is with us always. He is present with your family. Ponder deeply on this incredible mystery. A happy and a blessed Christmas to one and all. Enjoy the presence of children. Have time for family, neighbours, family and friends. Let no neighbour’s Christmas day be long and lonely because no one comes to visit. Be generous to needy causes, give what you can. Have time for God. Have time to say a prayer and count your blessings. Especially give thanks for the goodness of the people in your life. Let us all gather together in church to joyfully give praise and thanks to God. This Christmas, mindful of the World Meeting of Families in 2018 (WMF 2018), let us remember the story of our own families over the past two or three generations, the joys and the sorrow, the births and the deaths. Maybe even look through old photographs. In families,

periods of enormous loss or pain are so often followed by genuine healing and new hope and happiness. Recalling the past, see the wonderful loyalty, care and love of your own family through the decades. Pray that worldwide all families will one day have the opportunities that we take for granted in Ireland. WMF2018 asks us to see all people on earth as one family under God Our loving Father. It will call on the whole world to appreciate and give priority to family life. Remember especially families in Ireland with no hope of a place to call home. Home, family and marriage are God’s greatest gifts to humanity. God bless all our homes and families. Thanks to everyone for your contribution to the life of your parish community through the year. Thanks to all the volunteers whose dedication to local organisations and charities so enrich our communities be it through culture, sport or assistance for people in need. My Christmas prayer is to give praise to God asking that He fill all the homes, families and communities of our diocese with his Grace and Peace. “Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.” Luke 2:14 Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne

Busy Festive Season For Scotts Lakers Words: Eamonn Keogh IT WILL be a busy festive season for Scotts Lakers St Paul’s with another home game in Killarney Sports Centre along with Castleisland Christmas blitz action plus a big National Cup semi-final to look forward to. Scotts Lakers will face Sligo All Stars in a national league division one game on Saturday, December 30, at 3pm in Killarney Sports Centre. This match has been rescheduled to this date after Sligo were unable to travel due to bad weather on December 10. Prior to the Sligo match, the Lakers will compete in the premier men category of the annual Castleisland Christmas blitz on Thursday, December 28. The Killarney side have three games that day against Fr Mathews at 2.10pm and Ballincollig at 4.35pm before facing the high-flying Tralee Warriors at 6.55pm. The top two teams in this competition will contest the Premier Men final that night at 8.45pm. Scotts Lakers will get 2018 off to a start with a very important President’s Cup semi-final against Ballincollig on Saturday, January 6, in the Neptune

Stadium, Cork, at 8pm. The other semi-final featuring Neptune against Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin will go ahead on Friday, January 5, at 8.30pm. The return to national league action after a nine year absence has been an enjoyable learning experience for the St Paul’s club and the Scotts Lakers team that has tremendous potential and have enjoyed a season of mixed fortunes so far. The Lakers got off to a great start with early wins over Dublin Lions and Limerick Celtics. The visit of league favourites Killorglin to Killarney Sports Centre attracted an estimated crowd of 950, probably the biggest crowd ever to attend a national league basketball game in Killarney. Lakers had chances to win this game but Killorglin’s foreign players proved to be the difference in the end. The huge crowds that have been attending the home games just shows the appetite and goodwill towards national league basketball in Killarney and the club will be hoping to build on this huge support for the remainder of the season and in the future. Other highs of the season so far include the

dramatic overtime win over Ulster Elks in November and the big cup quarterfinal win away to Fr Mathews on December 3. Team coach Cormac O’Donoghue has a squad that is capable of challenging any team in the league when playing to full potential. Americans Antuan Bootle and Justin Tuason have been prominent while Mark Greene and Padraig Lucey are two of the best Irish players in the league. Team captain Philip O’Connor along with veteran players Andrew Fitzgerald, Dan Griffin and Shane Horgan and promising young players Cian Clernon, Mark O’Shea and Paul Clarke offer Coach O’Donoghue plenty of options. Scotts Lakers will be without Mihail Kapitanov, who has taken up a job offer in Italy, but the good news is the addition of Dalian Mason, a shooting guard, who will hopefully increase the scoring threat of the Lakers for the rest of the season. Following the busy festive season, Scotts Lakers will have a home game in the national league against Limerick Celtics on Saturday, January 13, at 7.30pm in Killarney Sports Centre.

MEK United FC MEK United would like to wish all of our players, coaches, families and supporters a very happy Christmas and all the best for the forthcoming year. Last year has been a busy one for our club and we now have teams competing excellently at U12, U13 and U14 in the Kerry Schoolboys league as well as a blossoming Academy set up. This is down to the hard work of the coaches week in and week out, without whom we would be lost as well as our committee, but also the huge support from the parents! Our players deserve a special mention as they show great passion for football and represent the club with pride every weekend. This year we held a hugely successful and thoroughly enjoyable summer camp and an Autumn Camp in association with Robin O’Day and the Total Football Academy. Our U10’s played at A Cork City match at Turner’s Cross, and experience that will never be forgotten! We also launched our new online shop for MEK United gear, check it out! Next year promises to be even busier and we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and all the best for 2018. See you all in the new year.

Dr Crokes Are County League Champions

DR CROKES climaxed a great year at home on Sunday last when they defeated An Ghaeltacht by 2-13 to 1-10 in the county league division senior football final at Lewis Road. Fielding just 10 of the starting side from the Nemo defeat they led all the way, scoring an early goal. Early points from Eoin Brosnan, Kieran O’Leary, Colm Cooper and an easy goal by Micheal Burns set them on the road to victory. Sean Bambaire got one back for the West Kerry men but Sean Clarke replied quickly with a second Crokes goal. They had the cushion of a five-point lead throughout and never looked like getting caught. At half-time they led 2-8 to 1-5. Man-of-the-match award winner was Brian Looney who was brilliant both in scoring and in general play. In my estimation Crokes ’keeper Shane Murphy, who brought off five brilliant goalbound saves from a variety of Gaeltacht forwards, deserved the honour of MVP. His reflexes were excellent. Gavin O’Shea also excelled playing deep shoring up the Croke defence. Dr Crokes have had three long seasons without much by way of a break so they will look forward to a two-month break before starting all over again.

SCÓR NA NÓG

The county finals of the Scór Na nÓg quiz will take place on Thursday, January 4, at 6pm at the Austin Stack Park Pavilion, Tralee. Due to a change in this category for the past number of years the county champions in each county will go directly through to the All Ireland Finals which this year will take place in Sligo IT, on Saturday, February 17, 2018. The decision of the Maistir na gCeisteanna in the case of all answers given by the contestants shall be final.

MUNSTER FINALS Kerry will be involved in six of the seven categories at the Munster finals of Coiste Scór Na nÓg – figure and set dancing, recitation, ballad group, léiriú and instrumental music which will be going ahead on Sunday, January 7, commencing at 2pm at the Community Centre, Ovens County Cork. Wishing all readers of On the Ball a happy Christmas.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy ANOTHER fine win for Munster on the road as they continue their food run of form of late. Munster were in action last weekend in the European Cup and travelled to Welford Road to play Leicester Tigers for the second time in a week. The week before saw Munster comprehensively beat the same opposition in front of a packed Thomond Park and the return trip was always going to be tougher. The Tigers’ coach didn’t make things easy for his side, giving Munster much motivation as he complained about Munster’s defensive mindset. Munster hadn’t won at Welford Road in 11 years and a kicking masterclass from Keatley – with a massive 20 points from the boot, won the game for the visitors on a scoreline of 16-25. Munster now top pool four, four points ahead of Racing 92. In other Munster related news, the game of cat and mouse between the IRFU and Peter O’Mahony finally

came to an end last week with the Munster captain signing with Munster to remain at the province until 2021. Joe Schmidt was quoted as being “quietly confident” that his services would be retained and at least now we can rest assured that the mighty man will wear Red going forward. Seemingly it’s only a matter of time before CJ Stander signs on the dotted line and reconfirms his future to Munster, ending the speculation over his future. The IRFU have certainly stepped up a gear, confirming that Tadgh Furlong has committed his future to Leinster and Ireland, so hopefully the powers that be will “break the bank” to keep all the big players at their respective provinces. Finally, I would like to wish all Killarney Advertiser readers a very merry Christmas and all the best for the new year, a new year filled with some fantastic rugby to come – including the Munster V Leinster game at Thomond Park next week. Wishing you all and your families a happy and safe Christmas.
