“It’s lifechanging for Joe” Mother urges public to think organ donation after son’s life-changing kidney transplant
| By Michelle Crean A young Killarney man with Down Syndrome has had a new lease of life thanks to the gift of kidney last month. 21 year-old Joe Buckley from Faha, son of
Noreen and Jack, the former President of Killarney Golf Club, suffered ill health and had to undergo regular kidney dialysis. However, thanks to the kindness of one family, who made the difficult decision to donate a loved one’s kidney, Joe is now back to full health and ready to get back to his regular activities.
Now his mother is speaking out ahead of next week’s Organ Donor Awareness Week, which takes place from March 30 to April 6, and is appealing to the public to ‘Give the Gift of Life’ by becoming an organ donor. “Joe had his operation on February 12,” Noreen told the Killarney Advertiser yes-
terday (Thursday). “It was life-changing straight away. The big thing is once you receive your kidney it’s life-changing. There’s a difference within 24 hours. The recovery is remarkable.” She explained how Joe, who attends the Kerry Parents and Friends and is a member of the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, had suffered with kidney trouble since the age of 12 and had to undergo dialysis. She said she received great support from her workplace in the Dept of Justice, especially from colleague Stephen Byrne. “I’d like to praise the HSE for their dedication to the Kidney Association with regard transport to and from Joe’s dialysis and John Crean Taxis, Catherine and her team in KP&F and Dilly Little’s team in Dublin and all on Damian’s Ward in Beaumont Hospital.” Organ Donor Cards can be obtained by phoning the Irish Kidney Association 01 6205306 or free text the word DONOR to 50050. Visit website www.ika.ie/card. You can also download a free ‘digital organ donor card’ APP to your phone.
Inquest records verdict of accidental death | By Anne Lucey A cyclist in a mentoring programme for new cyclists, run by Killarney Cycling Club, died after she went under the wheel of a large agricultural trailer, on the N22 Killarney bypass, an inquest was told. Annette Mannix (48) St Brendan's Place, Killarney, died on May 10, 2017 due to severe traumatic injuries in a road traffic collision at the Lewis Road junction on the 100km an hour bypass, Killarney Coroner's Court heard. Ms Mannix was described as a "slow but steady" cyclist and was behind others in the programme for new cyclists wanting to enter the annual Ring of Kerry Cycle for around 20, set up by the Killarney Cycling Club. Behind her were two club mentors. There had been a cycle lane until the junction. As the three person tail group, going in the Killorglin/Tralee direction merged onto the roadway, they were overtaken by a tractor and trailer also going in the same direction. It was a spot where there was little room for cyclists, expert wit-

ness Garda PSV inspector Garda James O’Brien said. Garda O’Brien said it was “not clear” what caused Ms Mannix to come off her bike and be rolled over by the back wheel of the large hay turner agricultural trailer, drawn by a John Deere tractor. It was a clear bright evening shortly after 7pm, and the group had set out from the
nearby sports centre on their 25km run, the inquest was also told. “The deceased fell off her bike, landed on the road way and was overrun by the back wheel of the trailer. It is not clear what led to the fall,” the garda concluded. The junction was “a cumbersome process” for cyclists, as they had to leave the cycling lane and use a shared space, and return again to the cycle lane, Garda O’Brien also said. The agricultural tractor with 1.5 metre high back wheels, and “brand new” hay turner trailer were in good condition and the driver had a good view of the road and good mirror system. Excessive speed was not involved, Garda O’Brien said. The light-framed purple pedal 18-speed cycle of Ms Mannix was almost new and in good condition also. “A gap" had appeared between Ms Mannix and the other cyclists in the convoy. She was the last in the group and behind her were two club mentors. Accounts to the inquest of what happened differed. Paul O’Raw of the Killarney Cycle Club, one of the mentors at the rear, said it
was the fourth week of the 12-week cycling club mentoring programme for the new cyclists. They went single file at the junction, and she did not stray onto the road. The tractor had moved gradually to the left and the rear wheel had knocked her off her bike, and the trailer then rolled over her, Mr O’Raw said in his deposition. Tractor driver, Dean Taylor, told gardai Ms Mannix had gone up onto the footpath and had come off suddenly as he passed. He was experienced with tractor driving and had not moved into his left. He spoke of his shock after seeing her go under the wheel of his trailer. A lorry driver said the cyclist had sped up while being passed by the tractor, made contact with the left wheel of the tractor, lost control and wobbled. The six man jury returned a verdict of accidental death. Coroner for south and east Kerry, Aisling Quilter, Garda Supt Flor Murphy, and jury foreman Paudie Nagle extended their sympathy to the family of Ms Mannix, including her sister Suzanne Dennehy, who has campaigned for improvements to the junction since her sister's death.

22.03.2019 t GMHD.ie Brand Ambassador David Clifford with Adam Moynihan (Killarney Advertiser/GMHD.ie) and Shane Murphy at the Fitzgerald Stadium.
Clifford v Murphy video racks up over 80k views Football fans the length and breadth of the country were left awestruck this past week when a video showcasing the kicking talents of Kerry footballers David Clifford and Shane Murphy went viral online. The video, which was commissioned by local insurance brokers GMHD.ie, shows Clifford and Murphy going head-to-head in a shootout at the home of Kerry football - Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. After nailing a string of unlikely kicks from the sidelines and even the corner flag, the pair were eventually separated by a tie-breaking crossbar challenge from 35 metres out. With the scores tied at 6-6, Dr Crokes
goalkeeper Murphy narrowly missed the target and Fossa native Clifford stepped up to clinch the victory, hitting the black spot in the centre of the crossbar with his very first attempt. The video was quickly picked up by leading sports podcast Off the Ball who played the three-and-a-half-minute clip in its entirety on their video broadcast on Thursday morning. “This is a bit special!” they later tweeted. “David Clifford,
Shane Murphy, Fitzgerald Stadium and a crossbar challenge to win it all! Kerry are in safe hands...” Popular sports website SportsJoe.ie also shared the kicking challenge with their 325,000 Facebook followers and later an article on their website was shared 1,400 times. National newspapers The Irish Sun and The Irish Mirror also published stories about the video online. At the time of going to print, the video
had racked up over 80,000 views. The Killarney Advertiser’s own Adam Moynihan, who also works for GMHD.ie as a marketing executive and graphic designer, says the company are delighted with all the positive feedback they have received since the video’s release. “People really seem to enjoy it, which is great,” Adam said. “Shane works with us as a Personal Lines Sales Executive and when David came on board as a Brand Ambassador, we thought it would be interesting to pit the two of them against each other. “The two lads are obviously supremely talented kickers but some of the shots they pulled off were outrageous. I was optimistic that the video would be well received and when they started knocking over points from the sideline, I definitely knew that we were on to something,” he said. “Even the way it finished with David hitting the bar with his first go… It couldn’t have worked out better really. The boys enjoyed it as well so who knows, we might do something similar down the line with another challenger.” Adam expressed his gratitude to videographer Stephen O’Donoghue for his hard work on the project and also to Kerry GAA and the Fitzgerald Stadium for the use of their facilities. Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Insurances, trading as GMHD.ie, has grown in recent years to become one of the largest brokers in Ireland. The Killarney-based company, who specialise in car, van, home and commercial insurance, now employ almost 60 people at their main offices at the top of High Street.
Seriously injured cyclist to return home to Waterville | By Sean Moriarty
Mike Curran who was seriously injured in a cycling accident in France last summer, and who has spent the last six months in a London hospital, is finally coming home.
The Waterville man who was seriously injured in a cycling accident in France last summer, and who has spent the last six months in a London hospital, is finally coming home. Mike Curran, a former Kerry minor, suffered brain bleeds, broken ribs and other life threatening injuries when he was struck by car in northern France last July. He and his girlfriend Sara O’Shea from Keel were on their last leg of an epic world cycle tour that began in China two years prior. Mike has spent the last six months in the Wellington Hospital in St John’s Wood in north London but is expected to arrive home this week.
One of his best friends since childhood, London-based Patrick Foley assisted with organising a fundraiser in Kilburn last month called ‘Bring Mike Home’. "The progress Mike has made since the awful accident is remarkable and is a testament to his character,” Patrick said. “We received the news that he is heading back to Ireland for the next leg of his progress which is fantastic. He has received enormous support from the people of Kerry and all over the world and is extremely overwhelmed and grateful for this, but I would stress there is still a long road ahead of him.” Those that wish to continue to support him can do so via his donation page https://uk.gofundme.com/tddwfdbring-mike-home

Annual Killarney Daffodil Day hopes to exceed €1 million
The Killarney and South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day is set to top the €1 million mark during today’s fundraiser on the streets of Killarney. | By Sean Moriarty Daffodil Day began nationally in 1987 and the first Killarney fundraiser took place the following year. Two local committee members, Kathrina Breen and Tim Moriarty, are celebrating their 30th consecutive year as fundraisers for the Killarney and South Kerry branch. Monies raised by the branch go towards funding night care nurses, freephone services, palliative care rooms and other vital services and equipment. Volunteers will be on the streets of Killarney from 6am until 9pm today (Fri-
day) selling daffodils. “I really want to thank the people of Killarney,” Kathrina Breen secretary said. “They generously give their money, we only collect it. We are around €30,000 short of the one million mark after 30 years, and we would love to exceed that target this year.” Headquarters for the day is the Killarney Credit Union on Beech Road and anyone who wants to donate daffodils for sale can drop them off there. Anyone who misses the volunteers can contact Kathrina on 087 2612992 to make donations after today’s event.
Donie, aged 67, was laid to rest in Killarney Burial Ground, Knockeenduve yesterday (Thursday). He was a member of the well-known local family who have run Killarney Jaunting Cars for five generations. The company is currently being run by Donie’s older brother Michael Sr. He had been employed by the family firm all his working life and entertained thousands of visitors to the Killarney region over the years. “My grandfather was a gamekeeper in the national park when it was operated by the landlords so anything to do with fishing, hunting or rowing in the park and Donie was involved in it,” his nephew Michal Jr. told The Killarney Advertiser this week. “He was involved in the local FCA as a young man, but he was a jarvey all his life. We are a fifth generation jarvey family and my uncle was part of this tradition all his life.” Donie was originally from the Ross Road

but lived in Ballyspillane for a lot of his life too. He is survived by his children, Valerie, Bryan and Ivan, their mother Geraldine, son-in-law Michael Lenihan, daughterin-law Hazel and Ivan's partner Sinéad, his grandchildren Conor, Sarah, Liam, Noah, Summer, Aria and Mason, brothers Michael, Kevin, Billy and Seán, sisters Marion, Kathleen and Rose.
Pharmacy staff prescribe coffee and a sweat treat | By Michelle Crean It won’t be the usual trip to the pharmacy tomorrow (Saturday) as staff won’t just be prescribing medication but also coffee and tea as part of a fundraiser. Staff at Kennellys Pharmacy, The Reeks Gateway, are organising a coffee morning in store to raise funds and awareness for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. From 11am to 3pm, the public are invited to pop in and have a refreshing cuppa and maybe a sweet treat – and leave a donation for the service. And not only that, there’ll be spot prizes, face painting and a make-up demonstration, explained staff member Emma O'Connor. "We are doing it in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation as it’s close to everyone’s hearts,” Emma told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The service relies on fundraising as they
get no Government funding and a lot of people are familiar with their services. Daffodil Day is Friday and we said we’d do something that goes hand-in-hand with it.”

€10,000 raised for Down Syndrome Kerry | By Michelle Crean A whopping €10,000 was donated to Down Syndrome Kerry this week following a coffee morning in Killarney town earlier this month. Almost €5,000 was raised in just a matter of hours in Lír Café at Kenmare Place as part of their annual fundraising drive alongside Monex Financial Services. On March 7, Down Syndrome Kerry was the chosen charity and locals and visitors to the town generously emptied their pockets and wallets for the well-deserved charity. The amount was then matched by Monex owner Frank Murphy who has teamed up with Lír Café for the past number of years. “We’re completely blown away," Madeleine Doyle, PRO with Down Syndrome
Kerry, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s incredible to make that amount of money in four hours. We’re very grateful.” Alan Oliver, Manager Lír Café said 350 people came through the door on the day and everything was “gratis” to the customers. They in turn dug deep to help the charity which, receives no Government funding. “We raised almost €5,000 on the day and Frank marched it. 350 people came in and were very generous. Staff Gillian Doody and Joan Cronin played a blinder on the day.” Frank Murphy added that it is the third year of their fundraising efforts. “We do this every year for the last three years and Down Syndrome Kerry was the chosen charity this year. This is by far the most we have raised.”

TV appearance for Killarney cheerleaders
A Killarney cheerleading troupe are one of several acts to appear on Ireland’s Got Talent tomorrow (Saturday) night. | By Sean Moriarty The American style cheerleading club, Scorchers, will join 18 others from all over Ireland on the hit show on Virgin Media One, at 7.30pm. Saturday’s episode is the final audition and while all the Golden Buzzers have been chosen, it’s now time for the judges to decide who goes through to
the live shows. “It is a great advertisement for the sport of cheerleading,” said club coach Danny Farkas. “The trip up to Dublin was very exciting for the kids. It was their first on television. It is great to show off the sport, learning acrobatic stunts is not easy and this will be good for the sport and the club.”

Animal charity AHAR to wind down Castleisland-based animal rescue charity Animal Heaven Animal Rescue (AHAR) is to wind down following an audit by the Revenue Commissioners. Revenue officials found that the charity owes over €130,000 in unpaid tax bills. AHAR’s operations and assets will be taken over by the Athlone and West Midlands Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Three members of the AHAR staff are expected to transfer to the new operation.
However, founder Suzanne Gibbons will remain as the centre’s manager. The charity has, in the past, courted controversy. Last year the Charities Regulator of Ireland proposed the appointment of two external members to the charity’s five-person board – a move vehemently opposed by Gibbons – after the charity organisation fell behind in its bookkeeping and a lack of volunteers. AHAR was the subject of an RTE Investigates documentary where it was alleged that that there was a lack of financial
transparency at the charity. There were also allegations of animal cruelty at the charity, another issue Gibbons denies. Last October, in the midst of all these allegations the CRI appointed David Hall as AHAR chairman. He found, through investigation with animal welfare officers in Tralee, that all allegations of cruelty were false. Once the Revenue published AHAR on its defaulter’s list the charity faced a dilemma: attempt to raise the €130,000 tax bill through public donations or close
down. Transferring AHAR under the control of Athlone and West Midlands Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was a third option proposed by Hall. As a result AHAR will no longer be a legal entity, but the Castleisland sanctuary can continue to operate with Gibbons as its manager. “To all the staff and volunteers, we are here because of you,” said Gibbons on a social media video. “David Hall made it clear that a lack of governance and a lack of bookkeeping was going to cause the charity a limited future. David had a choice of closing us down but of course this amazing man found a way around.”

VIEWS NEWS The views are simply stunning overlooking Madam’s Height ON
THE
x
Has anyone “seen” the Madam’s Height/Hill area? It has taken years of campaigning by Kathleen O’Regan-Sheppard of Kathleen's Country House and her neighbours to get the council to create a park and cut the bushes on the ditches where we’re hiding some of the most dramatic views in Killarney. Finally, thanks largely to Cllr John Sheahan, the campaign has borne fruit. The views are simply stunning. You sweep in from Tralee and there is this perfect little town nestling below green and blue hills under the dark grey Gothic St Finan’s and the Cathedral spire rising in the mist and equally impressive green copper roofed white ice-cream cake Plaza Hotel. The 180 degree views are straight from Lord of the Rings, all the way to the south east west over Mangerton and out to Purple and Tomies and the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, with clouds painting the surface canvas! It really must be one of the most uplifting views in Ireland, or anywhere, of
any town. And all the more so after the tough journey along the bad road from Tralee. And all it took was cutting a few bushes! It’s not the first time Kathleen of Madam’s Height has come up with a bright idea. In 2004, as a former chairperson of the IHF she called for an invitation to be issued to the Royal family to send a representative to Killarney as part of the Killarney 250 celebrations. Queen Victoria came to Killarney and it was a popular destination among British royals, was Kathleen O’Regan-Sheppard’s argument. A royal visit would have enormous benefits for the town. It was 2004. There was the usual re-
Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
sponse of shouts by the usual suspects who would have us still massed along the border firing rocks over and telling British tourists to go home, rather than sitting down in Westminster and saving Ireland and Europe. However, within seven years every town in Ireland was fighting for the Queen to drop by! And that Prince Charles and Camilla were not allowed linger longer in Killarney, but had to be hauled to Tralee when all they really wanted to do was to be in classy Killarney - was one of the minuses for me of the royal visit to Kerry. Perhaps it is time now for a royal visit, to just us! Speaking of women with good ideas before their time: Jacinda Ardern, the New Zealand PM is a woman of her time. And in her country she is allowed to be a practical woman, a mother and a parliamentarian. That is the point. Women are often kept down and mocked and satirised in Ireland if they get too vocal! And this is not just in
Plastic wrapped stuff is choking us - not to mind the whales! “Thousands of children march for climate change!” ran the headings on ‘Fridays for Future’ reports last weekend. This was in reference to the seven to 17 year-olds who skipped or mitched from school for the day last Friday - as their parents stood proudly by. Yes, it is time we woke up to all the horrendous damage, mainly from overuse of stuff from polystyrene to petrol to plastic that has swamped our world in the three decades in the march of globalisation. Coffee cups to polyester jumpers are the same everywhere now. And why you need sauces in small bits of plastic is beyond me. But the big offenders, the big consumers, and the big “winners” economically, like the US and China, are not listen-
ing at all. And what is happening in Africa? Apparently there is wanton destruction and pillaging of the environments. It has already taken place in Australia they have cut down all their forests for cows and now they have floods in the macho country. We continue to import plastic rubbish by the tonne. Practically everything you buy now is made in China whose record on coal burning is atrocious and whose cities are so filled with smog, they could hardly host the Olympics. Our consumption of pizza and fast food and plastic wrapped stuff is choking us, not to mind the whales. A campaign to stop buying stuff from China would do the world and us all a hell of a lot of good to save the planet. A campaign to tell the food giants to cut down on the packaging would help
enormously. A campaign to tell Americans to eat and consume less, and cut down on the clothes driers and the air conditioning would probably achieve a lot too. But is there something chilling about children reminding adults the end of the world is nigh, if it indeed is? I found the messages - all strangely similar - on the placards carried by younger children particularly a bit unnerving, for the baldness and plainness of the statements. “‘There is no Planet B’… ‘Our planet our future’, ‘Your mistake…’” and on and on…from nine year-olds chilled me. As much as I am concerned about the environment and the future of the planet, a future where children no longer believe in fairy stories or believe only in this reality, and have their nos-
male dominated Ireland. Look at the States. I can’t see them electing a woman anytime soon. Obama, Trump and all the rest of them are good at the words and the fine and the not so fine speeches. But they have done zilch about gun crime, time after time, school after school shootings, year after year. Put a woman like Jacinda in power in what is a most civilised society with strong old-fashioned values of courtesy and good manners and a good history of treating the native Maori well, and there will be no more nonsense about allowing people to mess around with semi-automatic rifles etc. Yes, there will be tea and sympathy. There will be words, tough words. And an awareness of the power of words - the Irish sounding name of the gunman will not be spoken, Ms Ardern has said. But above all there will be action - the gun ban will take about a month!
es stuck too much in realpolitik is a future just as frightening and unnerving. For some reason I was reminded of the worst practices of communism from China to Russia to Ceaușescu’s Romania - where children spied on their parents and reported on them, and became little tyrants to be feared in their own houses and communities. It probably won’t be long now when we will be told to avoid covering stories about Santa Claus flying throughout the air from Lapland because the reindeer are threatened and really should not be used to bring toys. A better idea might be to encourage Santa to get his local elves working. I have heard the US elves and the Chinese elves are overworked! By the way, a lot of us of a certain generation will be wondering why we were not applauded for skipping school - instead of expecting to be threatened with blue murder at home and with expulsion at school! Perhaps we should have used our imagination to come up with excuse, although some of us tried very hard with fasts for Trocaire etc.

Bingo event to benefit local school children Gaelscoil Faithleann’s Parents Council will hold their annual family bingo afternoon this Sunday. | By Sean Moriarty Taking place in the Mangerton Room of the Gleneagle Hotel, the event will raise funds for the school including paying for organising yoga classes, purchasing of equipment and organising guest speakers. Local Seanachai Ray O’Sullivan will call the numbers and the event, which is open to everyone starting at 2pm. “These events are about much more
than fundraising, they are about bringing the school community together and creating shared memories, they are about getting to know each other beyond the school gate, in a relaxed and fun atmosphere,” said Mary Carroll, Chairperson of the Parents Council. “We look forward to a great afternoon on Sunday and welcome everyone to attend – it is open to all. All monies raised will go to supporting activities for children in the school.”

Hero’s welcome for Special Olympic gold and silver medalist Kerry’s Gary O’Sullivan (30) will return to not one but two homecomings in both Killarney and Castleisland, after winning two medals at the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi this week. O’Sullivan, who is a member of Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, took gold in the shot put competition on St Patrick’s Day and backed this up on Monday with silver in the 400m racewalk.

And his proud mother Mag and grandmother Mary were in Abu Dhabi to support him over the last week. Tonight (Friday), Gary will receive a garda escort from Killarney train station to the Dromhall Hotel where he will be met by family and friends at 10.15pm to celebrate his success. Mike Milner will play the bagpipes and MC for the evening will be Killarney man and Radio Kerry presenter Brendan Fuller. Then tomorrow night (Saturday), a homecoming will be held in his native Castleisland from the Lidl car park through the town. The squad will arrive into Dublin at 2.30pm today with an incredible medal haul of 86 medals. Having secured 30 gold, 29 silver and 27 bronze medals across a variety of sports, Team Ireland athletes have had huge success in what has been a remarkable week of sport. “We wanted to do something to welcome Gary home,” Tom Tobin, Vice Chair of the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s very important to give him a welcome home. The club are very proud of his achievements.”

40k allocated to Ballyspillane Community organisation | By Sean Moriarty Ballyspillane Community and Family Resource Centre will receive €40,266 as they’re one of 17 Kerry services that will receive funding from the Government’s Community Services Programme (CSP). The CSP supports community-based organisations delivering vital services through a social enterprise model. Nationwide, some €46 million will be made available under the Programme in 2019. “The CSP currently supports community-based organisations to provide local social, economic and environmental
services through a social enterprise model, providing a contribution towards the cost of their staff,” said Killarney-based Fine Gael Senator, Paul Coghlan. “It typically supports organisations to meet local service gaps and provide access to services and facilities that would otherwise generally be unavailable. Eligible organisations are supported under three strands: community halls and facilities, community services for disadvantaged communities and community organisations employing people distant from the labour market.” The total figure allocated to County Kerry across the 17 beneficiaries is around €1.7m.

“Close playground at night” - says councillor A Kerry County Councillor has called for Killorglin playground to be locked at night due to anti-social behaviour.

Volunteers plan to restore Bluepool area | By Michelle Crean Dedicated Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal volunteers put in a record of 29 outings, facilitating 2,377 hours of voluntary work last year - 14 of which focussed directly on the rhododendron problem. This coming Sunday and again on Tuesday volunteers plan to continue their efforts with further outings, this time at
the Bluepool area. There they plan to treat the invasive rhododendron in the area. “This is an exciting new project for the Mountain Meitheal volunteers,” Johnny McGuire said. “We are calling on the Muckross volunteers to come to the aid of the Mountiain Meitheal – everybody can help.” The group are meeting at the Bluepool entrance at 9am on Sunday morning and 9.30am on Tuesday.
Oil and gas exploration to resume off Kerry coast | By Sean Moriarty Oil and gas exploration is set to resume “imminently” off the Kerry coast. That is according to newly appointed airport manager John Mulhern who took up his position last week. He confirmed that a new helicopter base is set to open at Kerry Airport and will be used to airlift crews to and from the off-shore rigs. London-based Babcock Offshore will start operating from Farranfore in the coming weeks. Babcock Offshore operates a fleet of more than 20 specialist aircraft in the UK on behalf of several oil and gas companies. The company also operates two specialist Search and Rescue helicopters which are dedicated to supporting the men and women working offshore in the North Sea. Last September, Providence Resources, an Irish-based oil and gas exploration
company, which is surveying a number of potential wells 200km off the Kerry coast, confirmed there is potential at a site known as Dunquin South. “The decision by Babcock to locate a base at Kerry Airport opens a significant opportunity for the local economy to benefit from the imminent re-opening of Ireland’s oil and gas exploration industry,” Mulhern said. “The new Babcock operations at Kerry Airport will be the base from which crews on the rigs will be taken to and from shore.” Meanwhile Geological Survey Ireland resumed its data survey on rocks, soil and water in the Munster region. A team of Canadian engineers use a low flying aircraft, which is based at Kerry Airport, to conduct a geophysical survey of the region. The survey which began last year is 60 percent complete. The aircraft, which is equipped with scientific equipment, will be flying at low heights over west Cork, Limerick and north Tipperary over the coming months.
Councillor Michael Cahill said the playground is a place for children to play and enjoy themselves and is not a place for anti-social behaviour, drink and drug parties at night time. "I have been contacted by a number of mothers in the Killorglin area who have stopped bringing their children to the playground as they deem it to be unsafe,” said Cahill. "I have been informed that it is quite common to find broken bottles and glass, graffiti, empty cans, used condoms and all types of rubbish in the playground." The Fianna Fail Councillor said it was very disappointing as a lot of work went into the provision of a playground in Killorglin by Kerry County Council and
Councillor Michael Cahill
a hard working local committee at the time. He added that the only option now available to stop the anti-social behaviour is to lock the playground at night.

New Community First Responder service for Glenbeigh area Glenbeigh Community First Responders, a new service linked to the National Ambulance Service, will launch on April 1. | By Sean Moriarty The service will be run by local volunteers who have been trained to NAS standard, with an objective to reach any incident in a defined area within 10 minutes. The service will cover Glenbeigh parish from Ballintleave in the east to just before Gleensk Viaduct in the west, and also encompassing Dooks Golf Course and Rossbeigh Beach. Volunteers are trained to respond to cardiac arrest, heart attack and choking incidents.
“Because of where we are, we are very isolated and we are 40 to 50 minutes away from Tralee or Cahersiveen where the ambulances are based,” secretary David Pitt said. “We are linked to the ambulance service. You cannot contact us direct. If someone calls 999 and if it’s the type of incident we cover and it is in our area, the ambulance service will get us to respond.” Eventually Glenbeigh Community First Responders will operate 24/7 but the initial coverage will depend on the number of available volunteers.

Glenbeigh football hero Darran O’Sullivan and local children at the launch of Glenbeigh Community First Responders service which will commence in April 1.
The first school in Killarney to undertake the course, the Transition Year students in Killarney Community College learned all about pain, discomfort and poor posture when lifting and carrying heavy items. Manual Handling training with the students focused on ergonomic risk assessment whether they are carrying school bags or when in the work place for work experience as part of their Transition Year activities. Instructor Sheliah Nolan, from Kerry Health and Safety, covered a wide range of activities including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and repetitive tasks. They also learned that worldwide, back pain is the single leading cause of disability, preventing many people from engaging in work as well as other everyday activities, explained TY coordinator Ker-
ri McCarthy. “The weight and size of our students bags are ever increasing,” she said. “We felt that this course would provide students with the information needed to continue their studies and day-to-day activities without the risk of getting injured.” Carrying a school bag is something all students have to do and is often associated with pain, discomfort and poor posture. However, there are simple things which parents and students can do to minimise discomfort, similar to the approach used in risk assessment in the workplace, she added. “Students learned about the importance of exercise, movement and maintaining good posture.” She added that overall the students were very surprised and pleased with the content of the course.
Mental health for farmers central to Macra vice president bid A Beaufort postman has announced that he will be running as a candidate for Macra na Feirme Munster vice-president in this year’s elections. Trevor Coffey will face opposition from three other candidates from Munster when the elections take place on April 10. Coffey, who is also a jarvey based at the Gap of Dunloe, says he will tackle the growing problem of mental issues and depression in the farming community if elected. “I’m in Macra na Feirme five years. I didn't know much about Macra but I was
struggling with mental health issues and decided to go to a table quiz and haven’t looked back since,” he said. “Macra na Feirme helped me when I was really struggling and helped me develop and gave me a new lease of life, now is the time to give back and that’s why I have decided to run for Munster vice-president. If elected I would encourage anyone that is in a bad place or suffering from depression to join Macra na Feirme. Rural Ireland can be a lonesome place, but I would like to show Macra can be a place for friendships.” Coffey is very active in the Mid-Kerry
branch of Macra. He is the current sports and social officer for the club, a member of the South Kerry Ploughing Championship committee and has previously represented Kerry on the national council for two years. He is part of a committee that hopes to bring the National Marcra na Feirme Rally to Killarney in 2020. It is 30 years since County Kerry hosted the national conference, but Coffey is hopeful that the local branch will know by April or May this year if the bid for the October Bank Holiday weekend event next year has been successful.

Killarney students win the Best Newcomer award
Transition Year students at St Brigid’s Secondary School in Killarney won the Best Newcomers award at the AIB Build a Bank Challenge competition in the RDS Dublin last week. The Build A Bank Challenge asks a team of six students to build a bank and learn about the world of banking, business, innovation and entrepreneurship. The St Brigid’s team 'The Inside Out Bank' got the opportunity to present their bank to a panel of judges. The members of the school’s bank team have been working towards this competition since September. Over 100 schools from all over the country partici-
pated in last week’s final. The team was mentored by student officer Alana O’Connor and teacher Adrienne Brosnan. “This is an All-Ireland competition and with over one hundred schools participating this was a huge honour,” Adrienne Brosnan said. “It was a fantastic experience for the girls and they learned a lot of skills that they will take with them in to the future.”

Killarney parade certainly was ‘The Greatest Show’
ST PATRICK'S DAY
22.03.2019
| By Michelle Crean
The streets of Killarney were thronged in anticipation of this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade – and organisers didn’t disappoint – with a colourful circus filled display through the town. With this year’s theme ‘The Greatest Show’, spectators young and old, which included locals and visitors from all over, had the perfect ringside seats on Sunday as they watched performers, from stilt walkers to clowns and jugglers, and 54 groups including marching bands from Germany, dance and childcare groups amongst others make their way from Mission Road towards the Plaza, around Kenmare Place, East Avenue Road, Fair Hill, College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street, New Street and Beech Road, at 2pm. And although Sunday was the highlight of the St Patrick festivities, there was plenty of other activities organised by the committee for the weekend including a family fun zone in the New Street car park, bouncy castles, face painting and kiddies disco. Many of the town’s famous landmarks also turned green including St Mary’s Cathedral and Killarney Courthouse. Paul Sherry, volunteer chairman with the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney told
the Killarney Advertiser this week that he is delighted with the crowds and the number of groups who took part this year. “It was a very well attended parade,” Paul said. “The crowds came out and the weather stayed with us. The streets were thronged and there was a wonderful atmosphere. RTE also filmed the parade which was shown on the Six One and 9pm news and Fáilte Ireland were here also with a film crew.” Pre-parade entertainment took place on Main Street with Padraig Buckley and Killarney School of Music. There were circus themed workshops, magic shows, pirate shows and creative Lego fun with the Brickx Club.” Mayor of Killarney, Cllr John Sheahan, Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne, Parish Administrator Fr Kieran O’Brien, Fr Liam McCarthy OFM, Garda Superintendent Flor Murphy, Killarney Town Manager Angela McAllen, TDs and local councillors watched the magic and excitement from the review stand.

Killarney apprentices in National Skills final | By Sean Moriarty
Several Killarney-based apprentices will compete in the National Skills competition finals in the RDS Dublin today (Friday). The National Skills competition showcases over 20 varied skills and trades in a competitive setting, the winners in each event having the opportunity to represent Ireland at the World Skills Olympics in Russia later this year. Liebherr Container Cranes have two apprentices competing in the national
final. Kieran O’Halloran, a third-year Metal Fabrication apprentice from Ballyheigue, will complete in the Metal Fabrication final and Bill O’Connell, a fourth year Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitter apprentice from Scartaglen, will compete in the Industrial Mechanical final. Killarney’s Monica King, a student at Kerry Education and Training Board in Tralee is a finalist in the Beauty Therapy section. The National Skills Competition is open to skilled young people under the age of 23 across construction, engineering, and transport.

Young Killorglin inventor tests product in Africa A young Kerry inventor got the chance to field test his award-winning science project when he travelled recently to a remote part of Africa with an Irish schools group. Fifth year student from Killorglin Community College, Timothy McGrath, took part in the annual schools study visit organised by development charity Self Help Africa. He got the chance to travel thanks to a prize-winning bursary he received as the winner of the Irish Aid sponsored ‘Science for Development Award’ at last year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in Dublin. His project looked at new approaches to eradicating cholera in contaminated water. Timothy travelled to Uganda with his headmaster Donal O’Reilly and a group of Irish secondary students and teachers on the annual schools trip organised by the Development Education arm of
charity Self Help Africa. The group met with Ireland’s ambassador in Uganda, William Carlos, and visited a school and university in the country, where Timothy gave a presentation about his award-winning science project. “It was an amazing experience, and a great opportunity for me to speak to local students about my project,” Timothy said. “They had a lot of questions, and it was interesting to hear their ideas. We visited farming families in a refugee camp in Kiryandongo, home to about 54,000 people, who are being supported by Self Help Africa to grow quality maize,”

Milltown Castlemaine GAA reveal upgrade plans | By Sean Moriarty Supporters of Milltown Castlemaine GAA Club could have a seat named after them in the club’s proposed new grandstand. The Mid-Kerry club has just launched a fundraising drive in an effort to provide better facilities at the ever-expanding club. The 2012 All-Ireland intermediate champions plan to build a new 192-seater stand at the Paddy Burke Memorial Grounds in Milltown. It is all part of a huge expansion and development scheme at the club that will include the redevelopment of the playing pitch, the upgrading of the dressing rooms and gym and the construction of a community walkway. Additional plans include the extension of club-
house and meeting room facilities, car park realignment and surfacing and the erection of a new floodlighting system. To fund this ambitious expansion plan, the club is inviting members of the community to become friends of Milltown Castlemaine GAA Club and play a part by contributing to this project. “The ever growing population of Milltown/Castlemaine has in turn seen a huge growth in club affiliation and participation from under-six upwards,” club PRO Deirdre O’Sullivan said. “The time has now come to extend and expand current facilities. They are calling on the community to help them with this development - to future proof the club for the next 50 years and beyond. This new development will ensure that the torch continues to be lit for generations to come.”

In late 2016 Aisling, who was at that time teaching at a private music school in South Dublin, suffered a generalised seizure completely out of the blue. Up to that time Aisling had enjoyed good health and manifested no previous symptoms of epilepsy other than what she described as ‘strong deja vu sensations’ which she brushed off. She was rushed by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital where her situation was normalised. She counts herself as singularly fortunate that her older sister Orla, who is a senior specialist registrar in respiratory medicine at Beaumont Hospital, was on hand on the day. Subsequent tests over the following weeks at both the Bon Secours Tralee and Beaumont Hospital revealed that she had a cavernoma – a walnut-sized tangle of blood vessels in her brain – which was putting pressure on vital nerve ducts, causing the ‘absences’ and eventual seizure. She was legally required to register immediately as having epilepsy, had to surrender her driving licence and was prescribed heavy doses of anti-seizure drugs. Aisling, who had moved to Cambridge to take up a position with leading artist management agency Hazard Chase, was faced with a stark choice – continue for the foreseeable future on heavy doses of anti-seizure drugs or have the cavernoma removed surgically – a routine procedure but frightening nonetheless. Beaumont Hospital is recognised as the national cen-

I extend an open invitation to everybody who has been involved with the band in the past as well as our supporters and music enthusiasts to come and join us for an evening of great entertainment.” Previous highlights include a performance for President Michael D. on his visit to Killarney in 2012, as well as a concert tour to Lisbon in 2013. The band also represented Killarney and Kerry on foreign soil in August 2017 when they travelled to the south of France where they performed concerts in both Monaco and Cannes under the baton of band conductor Vincent Condon. Previous tours included visits to Germany, Holland, Sweden, Austria, Portugal and Paris. “These are very exciting times for the band which would not be possible without the encouragement and support we receive from the political, business sector and general public in Killarney,” band manager Ciaran Lynch said. “This concert will be a highlight and a celebration of the voluntary work, com-

Aisling reluctantly gave up her position in Hazard Chase and recuperated in the home of her parents Aidan and Eileen O’Carroll. GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
There’s a cherry blossom to suit every garden Spring in Killarney sees drifts of pink, as all our cherry trees come into flower at once. There is a cherry blossom to suit every garden, and not all will ‘destroy’ your drive with petals! There is, for instance, a beauty which flowers from November to April, called P. Fudan. There are two cherries native to Ireland, the wild cherry and the bird cherry. Both are deciduous with good autumn colour. They both produce cherries, though they are more suitable for wildlife than desert. The wild cherry, or Prunus avium, grows to about 30m, and as its epithet ‘avium’ suggests, it is loved by birds. Lots of white single flowers appear in March, followed by red fruits. The Prunus padus, whose common name, confusingly, is bird cherry, though its epithet means ’wild cherry’ in Greek, produces long racemes of strongly scented white flowers, which are followed by bitter black fruit, adored by birds. It grows to about 15m. Both are extremely hardy, and much loved by pollinators. As I mentioned, there is a cherry blossom for everyone, and I must say, I love single flowered white ones – I admire the showy double pinks in someone else’s garden! A small cherry to consider is P. Kojo-nomai. It has small leaves, and peculiar zigzag branches, which makes it very interesting in the winter. It flowers just before
the foliage appears, having a pale pink/ white single flower. It is very slow growing giving it a bonsai like appearance and is ideal for pots. P. Kursar is also small, having the deepest pink flowers, and ‘Shogetsu’ has beautiful double pink flowers which fade to white. P. ‘Pink Perfection’ is a later flowering double pink. P. ‘Kanzan’ is probably the one we are most familiar with as it has dark pink flowers and a typical flat top. If your garden is small, P. ‘Amanogawa’ is the cherry blossom for you. It has a very narrow habit, and takes up very little room. P. ‘Beni-chidori’ is also an excellent choice for a small garden, growing to 3m in height with deep double pink flowers. All cherry blossoms have beautiful autumn colours, but be aware that they also have strong roots close to the surface which may damage patios and drives. They will grow on poor soil, but generally flower better if the soil is fertile. If cherry blossoms are not for you, consider crab apples instead. These also have lovely colour, produce vibrant coloured ornamental apples in autumn and are very easy to grow, especially in more open sites. Alternatively, Amelanchier, or snowy mespilus, is an excellent choice for a blossoming small tree. It has white flowers and is incredibly hardy as it grows in any soil. Its flowers are followed by black berries which birds love, and the show it puts on in the autumn is second to none!
FOODIE: Lisa Fingleton will be a guest speaker at a special event in Waterville on Sunday. Photo: Rena Blake
Living on locally produced food
A North Kerry-based author, who ate only locally produced food for a month and wrote a book on her experience, is one of the guest speakers at a special event in Waterville this Sunday. Waterville Tidy Towns is organising the ‘Feeding Ourselves’ event, a local food project, at Tech Amergin, at 2pm. Lisa Fingleton embarked on a 30-day challenge last September after buying a sandwich at a local garage and then questioning the origin of each ingredient. In that time, she ate only food produced on the island of Ireland, which meant she excluded everyday food like sugar, bananas and chocolate. “I learned a lot from that sandwich. It made me question if there is really any such a thing as ‘cheap food’,” she said.
“Rather than getting bogged down in doing nothing, I started the 30-day local food challenge, encouraging people to eat local food for the month of September each year. It's a great way to eat good food, support local food producers and become more sustainable and resilient. Groups around the country started inviting me to give talks and workshops on eating local food.” She will be joined by Sue Jackson who will outline plans for Pearc na Beaca (Park of the Bees) in the town, and by Alexis Fermoyle who will run a garden vegetable seed swap on the day.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup ‘Unicorn’ promised to revolutionise the medical industry with a machine that would make blood testing significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes's worth at an es-
timated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: the technology didn't work. In ‘Bad Blood’, John Carreyrou tells the riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a tale of ambition and hubris set amid the bold promises of Silicon Valley.

Dingle man to run and cycle across the USA Dingle ultra-athlete Shane Finn (26) is set to undertake a gruelling 5000km coast-to-coast trek across North America in a charity mission inspired by his cousin. The epic run and cycle will start on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge on March 29 and take him across 12 states and terrain that varies wildly, from snow-capped mountains to arid desert. Starting with a 270km three-day cycle, followed by running 60km for three consecutive days, the 26-year-old 'ultra' athlete will repeat that pattern six times on

his 36-day trip that will not end until he runs across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on May 3. There to meet him, on her very first visit to the States, will be his first cousin Mary Evans, the inspiration for his amazing feat of endurance. The 37-year-old Celbridge woman is living with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
Last year Finn completed 24 marathons in 24 days for the same cause. “I might be in some pain out on a run but Mary feels pain 24 hours a day. That's why I picked 24 marathons in 24 days,” he said. Shane will be accompanied by a small voluntary support crew of his dad Tim, physio Ali McCann, driver Martin Fahey and fellow Dingle native Anthony O'Gorman, who will all travel and live in two camper vans for the month-long trek. “I really have just one job which is 'keep moving'. The crew will be working just as hard and will be up before me every morning and in bed after me every night. This is a huge team effort,” he added. “I genuinely feel so lucky to be able to do this because the people I do this for, their fight starts every morning when they wake up.”
An Garda Síochána in partnership with the Centre for Deaf Studies, Trinity College Dublin and Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS), has developed a pilot initiative to support members of the Deaf community attending Tralee and Cabra Garda stations. Chief Superintendent Matthew Nyland heads up the Garda Síochána Human Rights Section. "This initiative is part of the ongoing commitment of An Garda Síochána to respect the human, constitutional, and equality of treatment rights of the Deaf community in Ireland,” said Superintendent Nyland. “It aims to provide enhanced access to Garda services for members of the Deaf community in these pilot areas where they will be able to speak and be understood in their own language ‘Irish Sign Language’.” The initiative, delivered through a webcam enabled computer in the two pilot Garda stations will allow video-link access to Irish Sign Language interpretation through to the Irish Remote Interpreting Service (IRIS). "We look forward to continuing to work with our partners in An Garda Síochána and Sign Language Interpreting Services to identify how best An Garda Síochána can be ready to service the Irish Sign Language needs of the Deaf Community nationally,” Professor Lorraine Leeson from the Centre for Deaf Studies, Trinity College Dublin said.
Trump’s St Patrick’s Day in quotes Following St Patrick’s Day, we thought it would be fun to publish some of President Trump’s quotes on the day he met Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. “Thank you very much, everybody. Great honour. Oh, that beautiful music. I can’t talk over that music. It’s too good. It’s too good. We’ll let them finish out. Very good. And thank you very much. “On behalf of the First Lady, I’d like to thank Taoiseach Leo, you are really something. We’ve gotten to
know each other over the last couple of years. Very special guy. “And I have to say — and I have to say that we have literally never had a better relationship with Ireland than we do right now based on the relationship that we have. But we’re doing trade. We’re doing many, many things with Ireland. And it’s been a — it’s been a wonderful friendship. Never been stronger than it is today. “I know many Irish people and they are inspiring. They’re sharp, they’re smart, they’re great, and
they are brutal enemies, right? So you have to keep them as your friend. Always keep them as your friend. You don’t want to fight with the Irish. It’s too tough. Too — it’s too bloody. “This very building — our nation’s beloved White House — was designed by Irish architect, James Hoban. In 1974 — in 1794, when Catholic Irish workers in Washington, DC needed a place to pray, they founded a church — now the oldest parish in Washington DC — and it’s called St Patrick’s.”

New scheme at Cork Airport helps those with hidden disabilities
Cork Airport is the first airport in the Republic of Ireland to rollout the sunflower lanyard initiative supporting passengers with hidden disabilities. The discreet identification scheme, recognised in major global airports including Heathrow, provides those with hidden disabilities the opportunity to avail of additional support. The project is part of an initiative by OCS, a large provider of passenger assistance services worldwide. “I am delighted to be leading the launch of a hidden disability lanyard as part of Cork Airport’s ongoing Hidden Disabilities Programme,” said Deirdre O’Dono-
van, Operations Manager at Cork Airport. “We are always looking to improve the facilities on offer to our passengers and we hope that the introduction of the lanyard will make it a little easier for those of our passengers in need of little more assistance on their airport journey.” The sunflower lanyard, available at the OCS desk in the Cork Airport terminal, is easily recognisable to all staff across a wide number of airports.
British newspaper lists three Kerry pubs in its top 20 Three Kerry pubs made the list of the top 20 best in Ireland by the Guardian newspaper in the UK. The London-based newspaper, as part of its St Patrick’s Day celebrations invited
readers to submit articles on their favourite watering holes in the country. The three local hostelries are all in West Kerry: The South Pole Inn, Annascaul; Murphy’s Bar, Brandon and Ned Natterjacks, Castlegregory.
The programme is called ‘Bailte’ which is the Irish word for townlands. Presenter Sile Nic Chonaonaig meets with descendants of the people who lived in the pre-famine village and those who have been heavily influenced by its beauty and culture, such as singer Tim Dennehy and poet Paddy Bushe. Sadly, only one family remains in the townland but it is still full of life and is now a hub for artists including Linda Graham currently on retreat at the artist’s village in the refurbished stone cottages run by Cill Rialaigh Arts Centre. ”When you get here everything that is going wrong in your world falls away, and everything is right,” she said. “It’s just the right place to be. It is just more beautiful everytime you see it. You never tire of it. It’s a spiritual place and I think people have always felt that way,” she said. Kerry businesses achieve AllIreland Business accreditation Two Kerry businesses have achieved a quality mark signifying they meet the highest standards of service and trust. Oakview Village Childcare, Tralee and Bathrooms 4U, Tralee were awarded the coveted All-Ireland Business AllStar accreditation at Croke Park this week. All-Star accreditation is an independently verified standard mark for indigenous businesses, based on rigorous selection criteria. The accreditation is overseen by the prestigious All-Ireland Business Foundation, whose adjudication panel is chaired by Dr Briga Hynes of the Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick and Kieran Ring, CEO of the Global Institute of Logistics. Dr Hynes said the accreditation, which is now held by 300 firms, is needed by the thousands of small and medium businesses which operate to their own standards, but have nothing to measure them by. “We evaluate a company’s background, trustworthiness and performance, and we speak to customers, employees and vendors,” she said.
“We also anonymously approach the company as a customer and report back on the experience. “The business goes through at least two interviews and is scored on every part of the process against set metrics.” The All-Ireland Business Foundation is responsible for overseeing the All-Ireland Business Summit and All-Star awards, ongoing All-Star accreditation, Thought Leader awards and promoting peer dialogue among members. Keith Barry and a host of top speakers will turn ‘Scaling For Success’ from illusion to reality at the Foundation’s fifth All-Ireland Business Summit at Croke Park on Thursday May 2. As a leading expert in influence and persuasion, Keith will reveal how to unleash subconscious potential, exceed business expectations and communicate ideas at the largest annual cross-sector gathering of indigenous companies. The theme for this year’s summit is ‘Scaling For Success’ and over a thousand delegates will hear outstanding speakers on the day, including global performance psychology expert Jamil Qureshi.

49 Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder
Experience Ireland’s largest whiskey collection in Killarney More than 1,200 bottles of whiskey line the brightly-lit shelves at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder in Killarney. The ‘Uisce Beatha’ is in good company with whiskey from across the globe - single malts from Scotland, blended malts from Japan, bourbons from America and the more peculiar from developing whisky markets. An eclectic range, but Irish whiskey takes centre-stage, as does local, seasonal Irish cuisine. Head Chef Alan MacDonald combines his experience in Michelin Star kitchens with his travelling adventures across Azerbaijan, Spain and Moscow to enrich the seasonal menus. There are unique
quirks in the menus like the black pudding sausage rolls, but there is a clear ode to traditional Irish cuisine and gaelic culinary styles. MacDonald really utilises all that the land and sea in The Kingdom has to offer, from the Glenbeigh mussels sourced from family-run Glenbeigh Shellfish to the Kerry herb crusted rump of lamb and the local rhubarb that fills the pavlova along with chantilly and candied peanuts. Lunch is served daily followed by an evening menu until 9.45pm with group bookings welcome. Another striking note is the fortified wine suggestions that adorn the evening and dessert menus. The Coravin wine system allows for some truly exciting wines to be tast-
ed, unusually, by the glass here. Over 60 Irish craft gins are available along with 12 craft beers, a bespoke cocktail menu and some very rare bottlings from the lessknown spirit categories. The staff’s passion for food and drinks is palpable, it’s no surprise that they have been merrited with multiple awards including Visitor Manager of the Year 2018, awarded to Whiskey Specialist Alan O’Donovan, for his work with the Irish Whiskey Experience - the masterclasses that are offered from the bar. These go beyond whiskey tasting to cater for Ireland’s foodies, you can learn how to pair and savour Irish whiskey and cheese as well as chocolate.
Where did Mother’s Day come from? The first ever movement for the recognition of motherhood arose from the groups for women whose sons had fought in the American Civil War. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson decreed the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day. It spread to Europe in the aftermath of the First World War, when many women had lost their sons or husbands, leaving them to raise their children alone. Most countries adopted the US timing and it still remains the most popular date for Mother’s Day across the globe. The origins of the British date are a little more complicated. Some believe Mothering Sunday originally derived from a 16th-century practice of visiting
the “mother church” - the main church in the region - on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. This was also when domestic servants were given time off to visit their families. In 1920, inspired by the new US holiday, Briton Constance Smith published a booklet entitled 'The Revival of Mothering Sunday' and by 1938, the day was celebrated in every parish in Britain and in every country of the Empire. Today, it is more commonly referred to as Mother’s Day, but it is still officially known in the UK as Mothering Sunday.
MOTHER’S DAY TRADITIONS It was customary for people to cook their mothers a simnel cake – a type of light fruit cake with two layers of marzipan – on Mothering Sunday because it falls in the middle of Lent and so represents a relaxation of the fasting rules. For this reason, the day was also traditionally called Refreshment Sunday. Simnel cakes, which are also associated with Easter, traditionally feature 11 balls of marzipan icing representing 11 of the 12 disciples (Judas is usually left out, except in extraordinarily forgiving Christian households). Today, gifts of flowers or chocolates are more usual.

Mercedes-Benz gifts new van to Sneem Digital Hub The commercial vehicles division of Mercedes-Benz Ireland is providing support to Sneem Digital Hub - by gifting a new van.
Local club to host Kerry’s first autojumble
Sneem Digital Hub aim to bring reliable digital infrastructure and quality jobs, to reverse rural depopulation in the area. In doing so, the community hope to add more young people and young families to their close-knit village. The Sneem Digital Hub management committee are volunteers who have worked to bring the building, which was once a dance hall, to life as a modern, high tech digital hub. The modern, stylish facility, provides high-speed broadband, hot-desking for remote workers, a low-cost base for business start-ups and options for companies seeking to expand remotely. Video conferencing
technology and meeting rooms are also available. Under the initiative announced by Mercedes-Benz, the Sneem Digital facility will be supplied with a new Vito van for their exclusive use for a one-year period. The new Vito, which is highly branded and instantly recognisable, will provide essential support to managers at the Hub in transporting equipment and distributing materials as required, and as a promotional unit when conveying display materials to events and exhibitions. “We are delighted to secure the support of Mercedes-Benz,” Aidan Murray, manager at Sneem Digital Hub said. “The use of the Vito van will provide a visual presence and shop window for the Hub as it travels throughout the Kerry and southwest region, and further afield.”
The Mid Kerry Vintage Club will host the county’s first autojumble in Castlemaine this coming Sunday, at 8am. Autojumbles, a bring-and-buy sale for classic vehicle enthusiasts, are a popular way of sourcing unusual parts and other memorabilia that is not on general sale. The Mid-Kerry club usually runs a vintage rally in July, but club members identified the need for an autojumble
after visiting similar events in Cork and Limerick. “There are two very good events in Drumcollegher and Fermoy,“ organiser Denis Tagney said. “There is nothing like this in Kerry so we said we would give it a try. We are expecting a good turnout going by feedback and enquires.”
Pictured with the new Vito van is Niall Scott (centre right) (Chairman of Sneem Digital Hub), Stephen Byrne (Chief Executive, Mercedes-Benz in Ireland), Aidan Murray, (Manager, Sneem Digital Hub); and Fergus Conheady (Sales Manager, Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles).

Killarney to host international future car conference A major international motoring conference is scheduled for Killarney in May. Electronomous, now in its second year and one of Europe's leading automotive technology events, will take place at the INEC in the Gleneagle Hotel, from May 2 to 3. This international conference brings together world class speakers, exhibitors and delegates in the field of electric ve-
hicles, connected car technology, cyber security and autonomous vehicles. Iconic automotive brands already confirmed for the conference include Toyota and Honda. The conference is divided into three different sections with the opening day focusing on connected cars. Friday
morning’s session is all about electric cars while the afternoon element deals with autonomous vehicles. Speakers include Pim Van der Jagt, managing director of the Ford Research Centre in Germany and James McCarthy, CEO of Nissan Ireland. The conference is organised by Cartell. ie, the main sponsor of the Rally of the Lakes which starts later on May 3 from the town centre.
“It provides a unique glimpse at how technology will affect the automotive industry, insurance industry, car finance industry, car sales and motoring into the future,” said Cartell.ie’s Richard Lahiff. “It also offers an unprecedented opportunity to network with industry leaders and leading experts in these fields, while also providing a great platform to create new business relationships.” The event will be hosted by Quentin Wilson, one of the UK’s most-respected motoring journalists and a former presenter of BBC’s Top Gear. A convoy of electric vehicles, driven from Dublin to Killarney, will deliver delegates to the conference on the Thursday morning.

O’SULLIVAN
In loving memory of Gerard Horan, Late of Isleworth & Ardshanavooly, Who died on 26th March 2011.
In loving memory of Tom Moloney, Clash Lissivigeen Killarney, Who died on the 21st of March 2013.
A special person, a special face, Someone we love and can’t replace, Never selfish, always kind, These are the memories he left behind.
Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.

It’s been ten long years since I saw your face, Heard your voice, you bought a pint or watched a race. Though life goes on without you, It will never be the same. In God’s care you rest above, In my heart you rest with love. Rest in peace Dad. Heartbreak for Crokes as Corofin shine in Croker No one from Crokes will want to dwell too much on last Sunday’s All-Ireland Club Final. It was just one of those days when everything went wrong. You have to feel for the lads involved and I’m sure they’ll be keen to move on and consign the match to the history books. But before we do, we need to talk about Corofin. I can’t remember ever being so blown away by a performance. That second goal - the runs, the pace, the patience, the ingenuity, the selflessness… To me, it was reminiscent of Xavi, Iniesta and Messi in their pomp. It was total football. The amount of people I’ve met this week who have greeted me with a shake of the head and, “Jesus, what about Corofin…?” They were just phe-
nomenal. Crokes are, to my mind, the best club team to ever come out of Kerry but on Sunday they simply had no answer for the saffron and green machine. It goes without saying that Pat O’Shea’s charges underperformed on the day and the red card certainly didn’t help their chances, but it would be disrespectful to focus on anything other than the victors. I caught up with Crokes forward Brian Looney this week and he spoke of his frustration and disappointment that he and his teammates hadn’t played to
their potential, but above all else he was full of praise for Corofin. “It’s very difficult when you’re chasing a team who are playing really well and at the peak of their performance,” he said. “You can’t but be impressed with the type of football they play and the way they go about it. “I knew myself that they were a good side but they proved that the last day. They played really, really well. They just didn’t allow us to get involved at all. I was saying it to someone there over the past couple of days: Croke Park is a lonely place when you feel like you’re chasing shadows.” Crokes won’t have much time to lick their wounds. They’re back in action this weekend and next in the County League and then it’s the Club Championship in
April. For Looney, that’s a good thing. “Look, (the club schedule) is difficult. But it’ll be good to get back into it fairly soon rather than dwelling on what happened last Sunday. I think there has been a lot of talk about the All-Ireland Club Finals and when they’re on… In an ideal world they might be brought forward to give teams an opportunity to have a break after. “I think the county set-up as it was last year, with the Club Championship being run off all in one month and the County League being played every couple of weeks, was a good format and it certainly helped. I suppose we had the dilemma of the fixtures because we were successful. “But it won’t be a bad thing to be playing a bit of ball as soon as possible and

22.03.2019 get rid of the cobwebs from the performance last weekend.” Looney is one of the most experienced players in this Dr Crokes team - he played in his first County Final as an 18-year-old back in 2005 – and he’s one of a number of squad members with a lot of mileage on the clock. Do they ever find it hard to stay motivated, particularly after a defeat like this? “I don’t think so,” Looney says. “At times you might feel like it’s hard but when you get a chance to reflect, you start to realise that we have a great group around us. Fellas are good to rally each other when we need to and there’s plenty at stake with the Club Championship and the league coming up, and then County Championship later in the year. “I’m sure it’ll take a bit of time to get over the way the Corofin defeat happened, but we’ll regroup. Your career doesn’t go on forever. We just want to make the most of the successful spell that we’re having at the moment.” One player who will not be lining out for the Crokes this weekend is Eoin Brosnan. The 38-year-old former Kerry senior, who was a second half substitute against Corofin on Sunday, has announced his retirement from club football with immediate effect. Looney wished his teammate well. “To have Brossy around the dressing room and to play with him and learn from him… He has been a huge influence on all of us, myself included. I’m delighted for the man. He’s had a fantastic career and he owes nothing to the club or to the county after everything he’s given over the past number of years.”

Crokes’ All-Ireland bid comes to nought ALL-IRELAND SENIOR CLUB FINAL ______________________________________________________________
Dr Crokes
0-10 | Corofin 2-16
CROKE PARK
Dr Crokes’ bid for glory in the All-Ireland Club SFC came to nothing on St Patrick’s Day when they were well beaten by a vastly superior Corofin side at Croke Park. | By Eamonn Fitzgerald The winning margin does justice to the winners who have now won two in a row. They now set their sights on the coveted three in a row next year, a feat that has never been achieved, not even by the all-conquering Crossmaglen side who won back-to-back titles twice in their era of dominance. Corofin were magnificent as Crokes failed to get any grip on the game. They were outclassed, outpaced and outscored by a magnificent Corofin team. They were on the back foot for the whole game, never coming near their opponents. Corofin dictated the run of play and Crokes were chasing the game throughout. It did not help that they lost their captain John Payne just before half time. He got a straight red card for a dangerous high tackle on wing back Dylan Wall and he had to go. 14 men Crokes had to play with 14 men for three-quarters of the semi-final when Johnny Buckley was sent off but Corofin were a different prospect. I had expected Crokes to win the midfield battle but Johnny Buckley and Daithí Casey were well beaten over the hour by Daithí Burke and Ronan Steede. Burke was named as Man of the Match. The supply of ball to the much-vaunted Crokes forward division was effectively cut off as Corofin were able to build from the back, link with midfield and set up their forwards, who deserved their score of 2-16. The Crokes defenders were clutching at straws as Corofin piled on the pressure, which they maintained for the full hour. The first goal was an unfortunate one for the Crokes. Mike Moloney made a great block down around the 20-metre line, but the ball skidded across the square and Jason Leonard came thundering through and shot an unstoppable shot past the helpless Shane Murphy. The Crokes’ keeper saved a certain goal minutes later when he deflected a rasper over the bar from a goal attempt by Daithí Burke. Overall Shane Murphy had
a great game. All Crokes had to show was a point from a free by Tony Brosnan. Micheál Burns did some nice work up the right flank and kicked a good score. The Corofin defenders were very tight so Crokes had to labour to get a shot at goal. Casey and Brosnan did score points but the real killer second goal by Corofin left Crokes with a mountain to climb. They were just a point in arrears at that point but up popped Gary Sice to palm a great cross to the Crokes net. The good approach work was done by Martin Farragher, who passed to Daithí Burke, who in turn sent it across the Crokes square. The ball was fed across for Sice to hand slam it to the net. Corofin composure Really from then on Corofin played with complete composure and Crokes were deflated. Sice added another point to put the Galway men further ahead 2-4 to 0-5. All Crokes could muster was a Tony Brosnan point from a free to trail 2-4 to 0-6. Payne was sent off and Corofin added two more points to lead at half time 2-7 to 0-6. One was hoping that Crokes might stage a comeback in the second half, but it was not to be. In their anxiety to do so they shot a couple of wides and they had to depend on Shane Murphy in the 36th minute to deprive Daithí Burke of a goal. Crokes' Colm Cooper is tackled by Micheál Lundy of Corofin. Pic: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile.
Instead, they trailed by eight points in the 38th minute when David Shaw might have given them a lifeline with a goal, but it was not to be. Wides from Brian Looney and Tony Brosnan indicated how out of touch Crokes were, as there was no let-up by Corofin. The Croke selectors introduced several subs but these were unable to curtail the runaway train that was Corofin. In fairness to Colm Cooper, the first sub in, did make a difference. He tried very hard to get things going on the field where he displayed his greatness with Kerry so often over an illustrious career. Crokes responded to Cooper’s revival efforts, but Corofin were not to be denied, even when they lost Kieran Fitzgerald after a second yellow card. Both teams put on several subs. However, the dye was well cast in favour of Corofin who had a big cushion. Crokes needed a goal to have any hope, but there was no way through as Corofin strode on for a well-deserved victory. Even though they have had some close calls at home in the Connacht championship Corofin grew in stature in the All-Ireland series and are worthy champions, as they were magnificent in this final. Crokes will wonder what went wrong for them. They have been great ambassadors for the game and kingpins here in Kerry this past decade, but they never performed to their true potential in this final. It was very disappointing to be so outclassed. Now they must turn to domestic fare with a County League game against Kerins O’Rahilly’s on Sunday. In the hurling final Ballyhale Shamrocks, managed by Henry Shefflin, proved far too strong for St Thomas’ of Galway, winning by 2-28 to 2-11.

Kerry’s fate still in their own hands Kerry are still in control of their own destiny as this year’s National League draws to a close but things could get messy if they lose to Roscommon in Dr Hyde Park on Sunday. A point will suffice for Peter Keane’s side but defeat would open the door for Mayo and Galway to nip in and make it an all-Connacht final on March 31. If all three teams finish level on points at the summit, head-to-head will go out the window and the final positions will be decided by points difference. Kerry (+11) hold the advantage at the moment but Mayo (+7) could quite conceivably make up the requisite four-point
deficit at home to Monaghan. Meanwhile, Galway (-1) would need a 12-point turnaround to replace The Kingdom in the top two and although it might be a lot to ask, especially against a resurgent Tyrone side, stranger things have happened. Kerry missed the opportunity to book their place in the decider when they lost to Mayo in treacherous conditions in Tralee on Saturday. In truth, the fero-

cious wind and torrential rain and hail spoiled the match as a spectacle. Some analysts were quick to criticise Kerry for their performance in what was their first defeat of the season but I don’t think you can read too much into what happened the last night. Mayo just about made a better job of dealing with the elements but the football on show was atrocious. It was just one of those evenings that didn’t suit anyone and it would be unfair to single out any of the players for criticism. Legion forward James O’Donoghue made his return from injury as a second-half substitute and he looked lively all things considered. David Clifford, who was down as No. 27 on the programme, was an unused sub but he could be called up on this weekend depending on how the game is going. The good news for Kerry is that it’s still all in their own control and a positive result on Sunday would secure their spot in the final. The opposition on Sunday certainly have plenty to play for. If they beat Kerry and Monaghan fail to beat Mayo in Castlebar, Roscommon will stay up. A draw will also
NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1
_________________________________________________________________________
Roscommon v Kerry Sunday at 2pm Dr Hyde Park
DIVISION 1 FIXTURES Sunday at 2pm Cavan v Dublin Mayo v Monaghan Tyrone v Galway probably suffice if Monaghan lose as The Rossies beat Monaghan when the sides met on February 3. Bottom-of-the-table Cavan can mathematically survive, but only if they get the better of Dubiln in Clones, Roscommon and Kerry draw and Monaghan lose to Mayo. If all of that transpires, the three lowest placed teams will finish on four points apiece and will have to be separated by points difference. If I had to put my neck on the line, I would expect Kerry to beat Roscommon and Mayo to beat Monaghan at home, so it will likely come down to Tyrone v Galway in Omagh. Tyrone are the form team at the moment so you would fancy them to get the win, a result which would hand second place to Mayo. At the other end of the table, Roscommon will be relegated if they lose to Kerry and with Cavan unable to overtake Monaghan unless there’s a three-way tie, The Breifne could be facing relegation to the second tier of the National League. Prediction: Kerry by four.

Spa to host neighbours Legion in County League COUNTY LEAGUE: DIV 1
_________________________________________________________________________
Spa v Killarney Legion Saturday at 4pm Spa
| By Adam Moynihan
Fierce Killarney rivals Spa and the Legion will do battle this Sunday in Round 2 of the County League and if recent meetings are anything to go by, it could be a good one. Legion came out on top of a cracking match last July and Spa will be eager to avoid a similar result this time out, especially considering how their opening day went against An Ghaeltacht. Ivor Flynn’s side fell to a disappointing nine-point defeat in Gallarus a fortnight ago and a second consecutive loss would not be the ideal preparation for the Intermediate Championship, which kicks off for them on April 7. The return to full fitness of former All-Ireland winning Kerry minor captain Liam Kearney is a major boost for Spa but they are still without the services of veteran defender Shane Lynch who is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury sustained against the same opposition last summer. Legion picked up a good win against Dingle in their league opener and they will be hoping to carry that good form into Sunday. This clash with Spa is the first of two consecutive Killarney derbies for Legion: they will take on their other neighbours, Dr Crokes, in the first round of the Club Championship in two weeks’ time. Elsewhere in Division 1, it will be a repeat of last year’s league final when All-Ireland finalists Dr Crokes host Kerins O’Rahilly’s on Sunday. It’s a very quick turnaround for Pat O’Shea’s team following last weekend’s loss to Corofin and there’s no sign of much let up any time soon. The Lewis Road club will take on Rathmore away in a Division 1 back game next Saturday before facing into the Club Championship throughout the month of April. It’s certainly an unforgiving schedule and it seems like scant reward for reaching

an All-Ireland final, but unfortunately there simply aren’t enough free weekends in the current GAA calendar to give them a meaningful break. Newly-promoted Kilcummin will be hoping to follow up on their impressive first round victory over Austin Stacks when they welcome Templenoe to Clashnagarrane. Willie Maher’s charges trailed by a point at the break in Connolly Park two weeks ago but they fought back in the second half and ultimately came on top with five points to spare (0-9 to 1-11). After their Round 1 game against Crokes was postponed, Rathmore will get their league campaign up and running with a tricky tie against Dingle in Páirc an Ághasaigh.
DIVISION 2
There’s an element of confusion regarding Dr Crokes B’s league position in Division 2 after conflicting reports
emerged of what had happened with their opening round fixture against Beaufort, which did not go ahead on March 10 as scheduled. My understanding is that the Crokes reached out to Beaufort to ask if they could postpone the game as it interfered with their senior team’s preparations for the All-Ireland Club Final, which took place a week later on March 17. Beaufort apparently agreed to this proposal but when the idea was brought before the County Board, it was rejected. On the official Kerry GAA website it currently says that the fixture has been “conceded by Dr Crokes” and a glance at the league table reveals that Beaufort have been awarded two points for the victory. However, a Beaufort official confirmed to me this week that the game will indeed be played on the next available
date. It’s a remarkable gesture by Beaufort and not one I ever remember a club making. Of course, it’s not unheard of for a team to agree to change a game out of kindness but normally when the board intervenes, that’s it. It seems in this instance that Beaufort simply refused the walkover. That’s so out of the ordinary that I didn’t even know it was allowed. Fair play to them, though. They must have felt that it was only right to help a fellow Kerry team on their quest to win an All-Ireland. Beaufort will take on Kenmare on Sunday in their first game proper while Crokes B host John Mitchels in Killarney. Glenflesk, meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back from their heavy opening day defeat to Ballymac when they play Castleisland Desmonds at home.

Lakers defeated but all eyes on playoffs NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 _______________________________________________________________________
Scotts Lakers

KILLARNEY SPORTS CENTRE
A 35-point outing by Dutch forward Papito Hersisia wasn’t enough for the Scotts Lakers last Saturday night as the visiting Sligo All-Stars just about held on for a narrow two-point win. The result in this final fixture mattered little to the home team as their spot in the playoff semi-final was already secured, but they will be frustrated not to have seen out the regular season with a win. In the end Sligo, who would have snuck into the playoffs had the Dublin Lions not defeated the Limerick Celtics, secured an impressive road victory, thanks in part to 20 points and five assists from Spanish guard Inigo Zabalo. Cormac O’Donoghue’s side finished up with a more-than-decent 18-6 record in Division 1, four wins behind Southern Conference leaders Ballincollig and three ahead of third place IT Carlow. Out of the 17 teams in the league, only two
(Ballincollig and Northern Conference first seeds DBS Éanna) had more wins than the Lakers in the 2018/19 campaign. The club’s attention immediately turns to Saturday’s semi-final against Éanna in Dublin and they will certainly have their work cut out against a team who have lost just one game all season. The sides met as recently as February 23 and although the Dubs prevailed on that particular occasion, the Lakers will take some heart from a strong first half showing that had them ahead by three at the half. The Lions eventually ran out 103-87 winners as American Joshua Wilson posted a remarkable triple double (24
PTS/14 AST/11 REB). Serbian forward Stefan Zecevic also had a big night with 27 points and 14 rebounds while Conor Gallagher also played his part by chipping in with 18 points and 10 boards. The Killarney side will need each and every player to be at or very near their best but as we have seen multiple times already this season, the likes of Seán O’Brien, Mark Greene and Papito Hersisia are capable of going off and having massive games. If the Lakers do shock Éanna, they will be back on the road again the very next day as the Division 1 final will be played in the WIT Arena on Sunday afternoon. In the other semi-final, Ballincollig face the Dublin Lions in Cork on Saturday. The winners of the Division 1 final will be automatically promoted to the Super League while the runners-up will have the option of having a playoff with the bottom team in the top tier. That playoff is likely to be invoked regardless of which Division 1 team gets there. (As Swords Thunder withdrew from the Super League midway through the season, no other team from the Super League
will face automatic demotion). After suffering a heavy home defeat to Templeogue last weekend, Neptune are now certain to finish last in the Super League so they will in all likelihood contest a playoff with the Division 1 runners up to see who will play in the top flight next season. SUPPORTERS BUS St Paul’s have organised a bus to take supporters up and down to Dublin on Saturday. The bus will leave at 11am. Tipoff is at 5pm. To book your place, check out the club’s Facebook page. €20 per person. Seán O'Brien rises high and draws the contact.

Nagle’s West Cork Rally hat-trick
Paul Nagle has become just the second co-driver in the West Cork Rally’s 41-year history to win the event three times. | By Sean Moriarty Paul Nagle has become just the second co-driver in the West Cork Rally’s 41-year history to win the event three times. For the second time in five weeks, Waterford rally ace Craig Breen and his Killarney co-driver Paul Nagle were the crew to beat as they drove their Ford Fiesta to victory in the Clonakilty Park Hotel West Cork International Rally. Just as in Galway last month, their closest challengers were Ulster pair Alastair Fisher and Gordon Noble in another Fiesta, who were 22 seconds behind after two days of stages, with Tom Cave and James Morgan the best of the British Championship contenders. They finished third overall in their Hyundai i20, another 15 seconds down. Nagle joined Monaghan co-driver Conor Foley as the only other co-driver to win the event three times. Nagle’s first victory in West Cork came in 2004 alongside fellow Killarney man Donie O’Sullivan in a Ford Focus World Rally Car. Later that year they went on to win the Circuit of Kerry and competed on Rally Spain together where Nagle made his World Rally Championship debut, his first of 81 starts at the sport’s highest level. “Winning Cork means a lot to me,” Nagle said. “It is so close to home. This is one of my favourite rallies and it’s where I had my first big success. I have very special memories of this place. This is my third victory so thanks to everyone who made it happen." He also won the rally in 2008, once again alongside O'Sullivan, but this time in a Subaru Impreza WRC. Breen and Nagle continue to lead the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship.
Former World Rally Championship contender Mikko Hirvonen won the National Rally in a Ford Escort, but Cavan’s Gary Kiernan put up a terrific performance in a similar car, leading the Finnish superstar until he was forced to retire from the lead due to mechanical problems with just two stages still to complete. Other locals to do well on the rally included Brian Doherty and Tara Duggan who finished third in their class in their first outing in a Ford Fiesta R2. Meanwhile, Kevin O’Donoghe and Timmy Kelly finished sixth in the National section in their BMW M3. It was Kelly’s first time working with O’Donoghue. Bob Moran and Adam Power (Glenflesk) were forced to retire from a class winning position. They were forced out on Saturday when a crankshaft sensor failed in their Ford Escort but they recovered under Rally 2 rules to finish fourth in their class. Shane Buckley (Listry) was another Kerry man on the retirement list. His driver Phil Collins put his car off the road on stage ten. They were already competing under Rally 2 rules after an electrical problem but them out on Saturday.
ITALIAN JOB
Local rally fans will be keeping an eye on the Italian Rally championship for the first time as Craig Breen and Paul Nagle begin their latest international campaign on this weekend’s Rally Il Ciocco e Valle del Serchio. The Waterford/Kerry pairing are the eighth seeds in a Skoda Fabia R5 and will face competition from local drivers like Giandomenico Basso, a former European Rally Championship front-runner, who will drive a similar Skoda.

MOTORSPORT BRIEFS... Falvey family fortunes Peter Falvey has become the latest member of the Rathmore-based family to make his mark on rallying. His father Todd, uncle Conor and cousin Mark are all champion rally drivers and are predominantly associated with historic rallying in the county. Peter made his rally driving debut (he previously competed as a co-driver and as an autotest competitor) on last weekends’ West Cork Rally and went on to win the junior section of the Clonakilty-based event. Driving a self-built Toyota Starlet, Peter and co-driver Andrew Cronin won the category by 3.8 seconds from Aaron Browne and Daniel Hanratty in a Honda Civic. Kieran Reen and Kevin Doherty from Headford were fifth in another Civic.
Fleming’s National Campaign Kilcummin co-driver Damien Fleming resumes his Triton Showers National Rally Championship campaign on Sunday’s Midland Moto Rally based in Longford. Fleming, the defending Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally co-driving champion, is navigating for Monaghan’s Raymond Conlon in a Toyota Corolla. The pair retired from round one, the Abbeyleix Rally in February following a gearbox problem.

Adam Lenihan was 2nd U16 and Patrick Galvin 3rd. Louis Steadman was 2nd U14. Meanwhile, Neil Hodges was flying the club flag brilliantly in Carrick-on-Suir and won the Senior A3 race.
