DISCOVERY: Killarney Gardai are investigating the discovery of a man's body in a house in Torc Terrace on Wednesday night.

Man’s body discovered in house Gardaí in Killarney are keeping an open mind following the discovery of a man’s body in a house in Torc Terrace on Wednesday night. | By Sean Moriarty Shortly after 10pm Gardaí received a report of a sudden death at a house in the quiet cul-de-sac towards the rear of Fitzgerald Stadium. It is understood the man, who was in

his 50s, is a native of Killarney and lived at this house for some time. The scene remained preserved as the Killarney Advertiser went to press last night (Thursday). Investigating officers are waiting on the

Killarney lads are Young Offenders! | By Michelle Crean Two Killarney lads – who happen to be best friends – are living the dream after being chosen from 7,000 to appear as main characters in one of the country’s best loved programmes ‘Young Offenders’. Their episode has received over 3.1m views as it’s available on the BBC iPlay-

er and with their episode due to air on RTE screens on December 23 - Conor O’Donoghue (19) and Killian Heelan (21) are pinching themselves after they accidently found themselves the main stars of the hit comedy show. In what turned out to be a series of coincidental events the boys couldn’t believe their eyes when picked up in a 191 blacked out Mercedes van – only to find

results of technical examination by the local Scenes of Crime Unit. The man’s remains were removed to University Hospital Kerry and a post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday afternoon. “We are keeping an open mind,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “The results of the post mortem will determine the course of our investigation.” when they got on set that they were the main stars – filming the episode over five days. Killian, son of Elaine and George, first tried out for the show last year after seeing a casting call on social media, but was disappointed when he didn’t get through. His own Tik Tok social skit channel proved a bit hit since and might have had something to do with him getting the part, he explained. “They got back to me a year later. They must have seen my 43,000 followers,” Killian explained to the Killarney Advertiser on Monday. “I had to make a few videos of me cursing and shouting and told my mom to not take any notice!” For Conor, son of Sophie O’Donoghue and Warren Haighway, he had five minutes to send his audition also shouting and coursing. In their episode, there’s Kerry Cork rivalry as Young Offenders stars Jock and Conor holiday in Kerry. What ensues is hilarious antics centering around Killarney’s Killian and Conor. “It is nothing we’d done before and it was surreal when we got there, meeting the boys and all the stars of the show. We didn’t think a lot of it would be centred around us. It’s life-changing.” Both lads are planning to sign with casting agencies and are hoping for more acting work. “To be the next Fassbender,” Conor said.

“Fencing not an option” – Minister | By Sean Moriarty There are no plans to fence Killarney National Park for deer management purposes, Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Josepha Madigan has said. Earlier this month, a deputation of concerned residents from the Ballydowney and Fossa areas highlighted their concerns to local representatives at a Killarney Municipal District meeting. They were concerned on the number of accidents involving deer, including fatalities, and wanted local and national politicians to immediately act as they feared even more lives would be lost. Last week, Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae raised their concerns in the Dáil - but Minister Madigan told him that a fence surrounding the National Park was not an option. “Fencing is simply not a viable solution and would not achieve the desired results for a number of reasons,” she said. “Firstly, the presence of the species is not confined to the National Parks and consequently fencing of these properties would serve no practical purpose in terms of wild deer control or management. The erection of a fence this size could impact on the sensitive habitats within the park. “Secondly, the park is over 10,000ha in size, including some rugged terrain. Fencing this area would be an enormous task that is unlikely to result in the desired objective. Thirdly, some smaller animals are capable of going under fencing that is eight inches off the ground, while others are capable of knocking down fences. “Finally, the erection of a fence this size could also impact on the sensitive habitats within the park.” Minister Madigan added that her department manages an annual cull in the Park and that last year’s cull totalled 272 animals, an increase of 32 over the previous 2017-2018 cull.

Brothers jailed after bouncy castle row Two brothers were jailed on Friday for offences which the court has been told arose out of a trivial matter, a “verbal clash” between two women over a children’s bouncy castle party in the Ballyspillane area.

Heroes save man’s life at Mass The life of an American doctor who suffered a major heart attack in St Mary’s Cathedral was saved thanks to the heroic efforts of locals who raced to his aid. | By Michelle Crean Dr Patrick Brosnan from Austin, Texas was visiting Kerry relatives when shocked 10.30am Massgoers heard him loudly gasp as he collapsed in the church on October 13. Locals raced to save him while Fr Kieran O’Brien asked the congregation to pray for the man and his helpers. Denny Murphy from Whitebridge Manor had been sitting behind the man and jumped in to help, followed by Dr Brian McCullagh, a surgeon in the Mater Hospital who was home to Killarney for a few days. Anne Carroll from the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit also happened to be at the Mass that morning as was Martin Grady who also came to his aid. Two rounds of CPR were performed while Fr Kieran anointed Dr Brosnan as he was moments from death. Killarney Cardiac First Responders Mabel Counihan and Bridget Delaney rushed to the church while Anne Lucey ran out for the defibrillator across at O’Shea’s Funeral Home. “I heard a loud gasp and a fall as someone shouted out for medical assistance,” Fr Kieran told the Killarney Ad-

vertiser. “As they worked on him I said we’d have no sermon, just prayers for him.” Dr Brian McCullagh appeared on the scene at the most critical point, Denny Murphy explained. “Both Brian and Martin were instrumental in saving that man’s life,” Denny said. Using the defibrillator, the man was shocked back to life, before being taken away in an ambulance to University Hospital Kerry where he stayed for 10 days before undergoing a quadruple bypass in Cork University Hospital. He has since made a full recovery and after being released from hospital this week is planning to return home to America. “I am grateful to have received both first responder training and CPR training through Kerry Fire Service,” Martin said. “These courses once completed are not just for the job you’re in but skills you will have for life. I would have to plea to people to avail of such courses whether they’re being run at work or community based. As I learned through my role in the fire service you just don’t know where or when you may use those skills.”

Garda Curran, Michelle O’Brien said both she and her husband were "extremely traumatised" by the incident. “We now live our lives constantly worried, nervous, looking over our shoulders. The stress I feel on a daily basis is causing a serious strain on my mental health. I fear for my husband’s safety from when he leaves for work until he returns in the evening, I am sick with worry.” Patrick Harty was found guilty by a jury of producing an iron bar in the course of a dispute. He was also convicted of abusive and threatening behaviour and trespass at Hazlewood Drive on Sunday, May 27. He was given a 12 month sentence with four months suspended. Sentencing him, Judge Francis Comerford said “an act of intimidation was at the core of the offence”. Danny Harty was convicted of trespass and threatening and abusive behaviour was given a four month jail sentence, two months suspended.

St Finan’s Hospital – what’s the next step?

Tralee Circuit Criminal Court Court heard of “tension and anxiety” between a number of families, some of whom were distant relatives in an area of Killarney where all live in close proximity to one another. Patrick Harty (32), of Feale Drive Listowel and Danny Harty (39), of Pinewood Estate Killarney, had pulled up at the home of Daniel and Michelle O’Brien and their four children at 22 Hazlewood Drive, Ballyspillane at 1pm on Sunday, May 27 2018. Daniel O’Brien was sitting in the front wall of his home with a baby in his arms and two of his young children and a nephew were there when a rust coloured car “quickly comes to halt” and the brothers alight – and one of them very clearly has an iron bar, and they enter the curtilage or garden of the home, investigating Garda Catherine Curran agreed with Prosecution Counsel Tom Rice at the sentencing hearing on Friday. In her victim impact statement, read by

| By Sean Moriarty A local councillor yesterday (Thursday) quizzed the South West Regional Health Forum about what would happen to surplus lands at St Finan’s Hospital once the new community hospital is completed. Last month the Killarney Advertiser revealed that the much-awaited new community hospital has taken another step towards reality after Cork Kerry Community Healthcare confirmed that planning permission for a new 130-bed Community Nursing Unit has been submitted to Kerry County Council. This development, which will be built on the grounds of St Finan’s Hospital, will replace the current St Columbanus Home and the District Hospital (short stay unit). It will be made up of four 25-bed units and a 30-bed dementia unit. The new facility will be all ensuite single room accommodation.

However, once construction is completed, there will be surplus lands and buildings on the site and Cllr Michael Gleeson asked yesterday’s forum if there were any future plans for this land. “Has the HSE South, in consultation with other interested parties, determined any positive and productive uses for the former St Finan’s building and the attached lands which are surplus to requirements for the proposed Community Hospital?” he asked the forum which was held in Cork City Hall yesterday afternoon.

Local singer to launch song for homeless

A well-known local singer has teamed up with some of Ireland’s best musical talent and helped pen a charity single for the homeless. | By Michelle Crean Grace Foley joined forces with Dave McCune who wrote music for the wellknown Irish musical 'Cooper Face Jack's the Musical'. The very poignant song 'Close The Door' will be released on iTunes on Sunday, December 1, with proceeds from all downloads going directly to the Simon Community. This time last year Grace was preparing to launch her album 'Unleashed'. Grace has been invited to sing at a charity concert in Foxrock next month in aid of the homeless and it was from there Grace became inspired to start the project. “I had written these words before realising that the Simon Community slogan is 'Close The Door',” Grace told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “There has been a sense of serendipity to the project from the start. Everyone on the project has given freely of their time and talent. Musicians on the track are guitarist James Nash, bass player

Rod Patterson and pianist Brian Connor. Brian Connor also arranged and co-produced the track at Ventry Recording Studio Balbriggan. The song also features the stunning voice of Irish baritone Simon Morgan.” She added that the song will have a very moving video to accompany it. “This was filmed in Tralee by the very talented up and coming videographer James Maher and features the wonderful Irish actress Laura Reidy.” Grace is also planning a busking event in Killarney Town during the run up to the release. This event will feature local artists as well as the fantastic Dublin singer George Murphy. Grace will also be a support act for George for his Killarney tour date at the INEC Killarney on Saturday, December 30, where Grace will sing a number of songs, including 'Close The Door'. To find out more information about Grace and her work go to www.gracefoley.ie or find her on Facebook: Grace Foley Singer.

‘It’s Christmas in Killarney!’, which was launched on Monday, is a choral and musical celebration of Christmas to get everyone in the festive mood. The 29 song, two CD collection of live recordings of the Killarney Golf Club Male Voice Choir, St Oliver’s National School Choir and O Happy Day Ladies’ Choir singing Christmas songs in St Mary’s Church of Ireland, Killarney. And the groups are planning to team up for a public performance on Tuesday, December 10 in St Mary’s Church of Ireland, at 7.30pm. In early December 2008, the newly formed Killarney Golf Club Male Voice Choir joined the St Oliver’s NS Choir for a performance of Christmas songs and carols. The blend proved so popular it has been repeated every year since. “For the last few years, listening to the three choirs on this special night, I would get the same notion every year, that we should record this night on CD,” Noel O’Sullivan, CD producer, said. “Fortunately I met Tony Flaherty and he mentioned that he had some dates free for recording in January. So I went to the

three choirs with a unique request: could we record a Christmas CD in January? Josephine Doncel, Choir Director of the St Oliver’s NS Choir and Russ Browne director of the other two choirs gave me the thumbs up and so we got to work throughout January. It was a strange experience singing Christmas songs in January but it was so worth it!” The profits from the CDs will be going to the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus and the St Oliver’s school fund. The CDs are available from shops around Killarney and from the office in St Oliver’s NS for only €10 with a limited run available.

School plans to light up special memory tree One local school was plans to once again light up for the Christmas season as a way of remembering those gone before them. Staff and pupils from Holy Cross Mercy School plan to officially switch on the light of the ‘Killarney Memory Tree’ on New Road on Wednesday, December 11, at 7pm. The lights will remain lit nightly during the Christmas season until January 6, The Feast of The Epiphany with all proceeds in aid of the school. Mass will also be offered for all those commemorated at 1.30pm on Wednesday, December 18 in St Mary’s Cathedral. All are welcome to attend. “We thank everyone who has supported this initiative in the past as it is an extremely important fundraiser for our

school,” Rhonda Daly, a teacher from Holy Cross NS, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Those being commemorated by the memory tree will be remembered in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. All are welcome. Lights can be ordered in memory of a loved one for a suggested donation of €5.” Lights are available from local outlets, Holy Cross Mercy School on New Road, staff members and pupils of the school and members of the Parents’ Association, she added. “Keep an eye on our social media for any updates in the town where memory tree lights are available. Thank you for your support.” Please contact 064 6631241 for further information.

CHAMPION IDEA: The ‘Wall of Champions’ is the latest and very unique fundraiser by Kilcummin GAA Club as they fundraise to improve their facilities.

The ‘Wall of Champions’ is the latest and very unique fundraiser thought up by Kilcummin GAA Club as their ambitions to better their facilities continue. Over the last two years, this progressive club who are also the 2019 All-Ireland

Organisations, businesses and individuals are being asked to work together and show more cooperation in an effort to make Killarney the first Accessible Tourism Destination in Ireland. | By Sean Moriarty Last year, Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland co-funded a pilot project in Killarney. This September, a delegation from Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland visited a number of cities in England and Scotland where similar schemes exist. The findings of both the UK trip and the pilot scheme will help Killarney’s ambition of achieving the European Network for Accessible Tourism label for the town. Kerry County Council said in an Economic and Community Development report, presented at the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting, that “Developing an Accessible Destination requires both

Intermediate Club Champions, have already developed a second pitch that will be used for training. They have also added a walking/running track, new dug outs, new perimeter fencing and are currently building two new dressing rooms, referee’s room, treatment room and equipment stores

on the ground floor, a gym/fitness room and accessible changing room on the first floor, with plans to have this finished by the end of 2019. The new fundraiser is for Phase B which will include all internal works, fit out, external access ramps and auxiliary works, explained Paudie Healy, Chairman of the Development/Finance committee. “This Wall of Champions is exciting and unique,” he said. “It will honour past, present and future generations through buying a commem-

orative place on the wall for €250 with various payment options for as little as €5 per week for a year. There are numerous ways to be part of this life-time wall through an individual person, family name, in memorial of someone dear that has passed away, or it can be purchased for a person as a unique gift for a birthday, christening, wedding etc., with that special date.” The committee want to highlight the very hard work in both voluntary and monetary contribution that has so far played a major part in the fantastic on-going development in these state-of-the-art facilities for their community, he added. “We would like to sincerely thank everyone both local and our wider diaspora that has played a huge part in supporting this progressive phase of development for the club.”

Concerns arise over plans for disabled friendly town status public and private collaboration.” Stakeholders identified included the local authority and industry bodies like the Irish Hotel Federation. Several councillors who attended the meeting identified problems that could hinder Killarney’s ambitions to secure the coveted designation for the town. Cllr Brendan Cronin asked why were the two disabled parking bays removed from the East Avenue Road following the completion of renovations at the Cultural Centre. The Council explained that two new bays were constructed to the side of the Courthouse after discussions with Killarney Access Group. “The current specification for disability spaces requires a 1.2m clear-zone. The area from the train station to the

cinema does not have adequate width on the road to provide the space that meets accessibility guidelines,” replied the Council. Cronin also raised concerns that large tour busses were parking on the footpaths adjacent to Woodlawn junction. Cllr Niall Kelleher raised a similar motion and asked that Kerry County Council adopt a zero tolerance policy to busses parking on footpaths. Kerry County Council, under the Road Traffic Act, has powers of enforcement during daytime hours and that the Council had discussed concerns with the Gardai. “Rather than heavy handed enforcement, we have contacted the businesses concerned,” Killarney Municipal Officer Eileen O’Donoghue said. It was also confirmed that the Council will

place bollards at the Woodlawn junction. Killarney Access Group has hit out against parking on footpaths throughout the town and this is another issue that will go against Killarney’s efforts to secure the European Network for Accessible Tourism label. “When a driver decides to park his or her car or van up on the footpath do they ever think about the people who use the footpath, where are they to go if their pathway is blocked?” Chairperson Mary O’Shea told the Killarney Advertiser. “Does the driver ever think about the person in the wheelchair who has no way of getting past and no way of getting off the footpath to pass the vehicle. What about the visually impaired person who is trying to negotiate their way on the footpath and then is presented with this hurdle?”

THE

x

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Who is watching Killarney’s Electric buses are back or advancing its cause? the way Cllr Michael Gleeson sought progress for the use of St Finan’s as a public building for services and education and this week referenced the Skellig Centre for Education in south Kerry.

Our problem in Killarney is being bypassed because we have no one to take the bull by the horns for us

He raised the matter at the Region Health Forum HSE South yesterday (Thursday). Since 1854, this “magnificent building” has been a landmark in the town but is now lying decrepit and idle, he noted. “If it hasn’t educational potential, I know nothing about politics or education!” Cllr Gleeson, a retired teacher, also told the budget meeting on Monday. It is high time someone took the bull by the horns and advance the case of this building which has the potential to enormously enrich our town, he said. Cllr Gleeson is right. Our problem in Killarney is the central one of being bypassed because we have no one to take the bull by the horns for us. I see where Tralee has this week, with the help of the Council and the local chamber, launched a huge report into tourism until 2025 and its plan to host major events. Good for Tralee which is making a name for itself as a tourist destination and will shortly, with the help of the County Council I have no doubt, have its own events centre. Of course what is happening in Killarney is the opposite - there is every attempt to subsume the most beautifully named and oldest tourist town into the Kerry brand. We are to be part of the green and gold jersey, part of the north Kerry farming butter and boots brigade, not something to stand on our

own. In short, we are being eaten up in Killarney.

BUDGET REPORT

Take the Tourism Development Unit of Kerry County Council - over €1m is being set aside for it for 2020. This is for “salaries, operational and associated costs”, we are told in this week’s budget report. Five pages are dedicated to the unit in the report. It has produced a series of booklets and photo launches. And in fairness the launches are suitably glamorous and everyone looks poised and polished. There has been the parks, gardens and woodlands of Kerry brochure, the Kerry Your Natural Escape brand, the County Kerry Activity Brochure, and the Overseas Kerry Tourism Promotion trips and booklets. This involves trips to cement the close

links with Germany and a brochure translated into German. And we are told that there have been “ high level meetings in New York” between the Cathaoirleach, the Chief Executive and Tourism Officer. We should shortly be able to dispense with Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland and all the other State tourism bodies altogether! Then there is the festivals and events funding for the Rose of Tralee, Listowel Writers’ Week and the Dingle Other Voices festival. There is also networking on the Kenmare Beara Peninsula, and there was the Dark Sky Reserve in South Kerry and lots and lots about Tralee. Did I tell you about the plans for Valentia? And the Tralee Bay Wetlands “a major additional tourist attraction and community facility for Tralee”? Oh, and there are to be new sails on the Blennerville Windmill, you will be delighted to hear - and “a complete redevelopment of the windmill visitor centre “with funding from various State agencies thanks to applications by the very committed Council officials in Tralee. Poor auld Killarney got three very small mentions in the six page spread on the work of the million euro Tourism Unit in the 2020 budget report. Who is watching Killarney’s back or advancing its cause? From what I can see the main strategy for Killarney these days by all the State tourism agencies, local and national, is to swallow it up into brand Kerry in the case of the Council, or simply ignore it in the case of the national agencies.

Time called on lunchtime We have constant analysis and reports, even this week of time spent on smartphones, time spent commuting, time spent online but whatever happened to any kind of look at what has consumed lunchtime? I have been at three separate “markings” in Kerry over the past week and none accorded what one might consider a decent lunch break. These include District Courts in this town, where working through lunch

seems to have become so normal, stressed court staff, not to mention solicitors and guards and the barely tolerated reporters have time for a café au lait. It is not today or yesterday this habit has crept in the District Courts where anxiety is a staple. Then there was a harrowing day of a coroner’s court last Wednesday week. Again no lunch break there. A bare 10 minutes to run out and catch breath is what we got.

And finally, on Monday last, we had the budget meeting of Kerry County Council - a bare quarter of an hour was the break during the discussion of a budget of €158 million. And most of the morning in Aras an Chontae was spent draped in coats and scarves because the heat wasn’t working properly. Yes, all of these occasions and those in charge “drove on” and got the work done, but there is a whole body of research now which leans towards the lunch break being more important than

forward

I am glad to see the Green’s Cleo Murphy talking sense - she says what Killarney needs is not more car spaces - but more buses. I am inclined to agree, though I think the town needs more multi-storey car parks to take away from the surface parking which spoils the streetscape. The shuttle bus to the Irish Open all those years ago should have got us thinking. We badly need an electric bus to shuttle back and forth between Deerpark and the town centre. It need not limit itself to set times, but could do a rolling run as it were out by the Muckross Road so as to drop people at Woodlawn and onto the bypass and back around. Pedestrianisation and cycling will be the way forward, whether some businesses agree or not, and car ownership will drop, so the need for hop on hop off transport is staring us in the face. Most of the advanced tourist spots worldwide now have electric shuttle buses and the local shopping population here needs one too. Perhaps there is funding from the EU or some Government think-tank? It’s something our very busy tourism unit might help us with. breakfast - and lunch breaks are not just to digest food. The findings go like this: a lunch break allows workers and everyone involved a chance to restore themselves, not just in terms of food “restauration” but in terms of a mental break. And it is a chance too for light physical exercise, as we, in our sedentary society, sit down for far too long. People who take breaks are more productive and indeed saner. That is proven. Shorter breaks such as lunch breaks are just as important as long breaks, and the key seems to be the scheduling of them at regular hours and for regular lengths of times.

out,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I have been a first aider at the hotel for 12 years but this was the first time I had to use my training. A nurse, who was a guest of the hotel helped me but he was a goner. He was taken to Tralee and then to Dublin. After a few days, when we did not hear anything we decided to call his wife, but it was himself that answered the phone so we were delighted it all worked out.” The man and his family were so grateful for her lifesaving actions that they return to the Gleneagle time and time again. “He was only back three weeks ago to see us all and thank us again,” added Geraldine.

GAA clubs in Firies and London are fundraising to help former team mate and club member who had his leg amputated above the knee just two weeks ago. | By Sean Moriarty Seamus O’Brien from Firies suffered a life-changing accident in February 2018, however due to multiple operations and complications with his condition, on Tuesday, November 5 he had to undergo the life altering operation. However, the self-employed builder is now unable to work with the situation putting his family, his wife Ruth and four children, under financial strain. Seamus, who is waiting for a prosthetic leg to be fitted – with the costs of fitting three prosthetic legs within the next two years exceeding €200k - has a long recovery ahead of him. Seamus played all his underage and senior football with Firies before emigrating to London where he played with the Kingdom Kerry Gaels between 1991 and 2000. He and Ruth returned to Ireland in

2000, first to her hometown of Navan and then to Kerry in 2008 where they set up a construction business. He passed on his love for the GAA to his children who are currently playing underage with Milltown/Listry and Seamus helped train the Keel/Listry U14s. The two clubs have set a GoFundMe page to help the family offset some of the costs they will face over the coming years. Plans are in place to run a golf classic early next year. “The fundraising committee in London contacted me and asked if we could help in anyway,” Firies Club Chairman James O’Sullivan said. “We will be calling on our club members and our diaspora to support this very worthy cause. As a club we are very aware of the nature of his injures and we will help in any way we can. To see a young man knocked down like that, and with a very young family, all of Firies GAA will help in any way we can.”

“She is delighted,” club PRO Tom Leslie told the Killarney Advertiser. “We will have a proper presentation night before Christmas where we will hand her the keys of the tractor and present the funds to the two charities.” Second prize went to Anthony O'Connell from Abbeydorney who won a stay in the Killarney Park Hotel. Killarney folk living in London marked their 50th annual Reunion in fine style last weekend at the famous Crown Hotel but the 51st running will be held in Killarney. | By Sean Moriarty Newer members were joined by some of the Reunion’s founding members as they celebrated five decades of an organisation that served as a home away from home for so many Killarney emigrants over the years. Plans were hatched last weekend by members of two committees to bring the event home for the first time with an official announcement expected in early December. “We had a fantastic weekend, top of the range,” long time committee member

Cllr Donal Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. “The London committee was delighted when we told them we want it in Killarney next year.” Highlight of the night was the naming of Jack Ryan as the ‘Person of Year’, an award sponsored by the Killarney Advertiser. Founding members present on the night included Fr Tom Looney, who earlier this year marked 50 years in the priesthood. Hotel workers run for sick children | By Michelle Crean Taking on a running challenge to get fit is one thing but local hotel workers also put their hands into their pockets for charity – raising almost €6,000. This week, the team at The Lake Hotel Killarney donated a cheque of €5,677 for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. The hotel’s employee representative team decided to lace up their running shoes and form a running club to raise funds for this very worthy cause. The team formed The Lake Running Club and from September took part in a series of running events and invited their colleagues to complete four five kilometre runs through the National

Park and in the surrounding areas. Each participant’s entry fee was donated to the chosen charity. Four Lake Hotel employees also completed the Dingle Marathon. Stephen Dennehy, chairperson of the employee representative team at The Lake Hotel is already thinking of next year’s fundraising efforts. “We were delighted to be sending a cheque of this value to Temple Street Children’s Hospital and are very grateful to everyone who supported this fantastic cause,” he said. “Each year we organise a fundraising event. Last year we completed a sky dive in aid of Kerry Mountain Rescue, this year we formed The Lake Running Club in aid of Temple Street, so we look forward to what next year will bring.”

Hyaluronic acid is a water-loving molecule that it found naturally in the skin. Below see how it benefits your skin.

Look vibrant with nature’s moisturiser! Who says you have to look your age? With incredible scientific advances in skincare, women in their 40s can look as vibrant as they did in their younger years. Hyaluronic Acid, which is nature’s moisturiser, keeps skin plumped and hydrated. Terranova’s particular Hyaluronic Acid is the first on the market in Europe with Full Spectrum Molecular Weight. This full spectrum property will allow their supplement to be taken for both skin health - reducing wrinkle depth by 20 percent - and joint health, as well as all other possible applications. Above all else, it is budget friendly too. Quite refreshing as normally a Hyaluronic supplement could set you back quite a bit. It is available in most Horan’s Healthstores. All you need to know about Hyaluronic Acid What is Hyaluronic acid? Hyaluronic acid is a water-loving molecule that is found naturally in the skin, joints and eyes. It’s your body’s own hydrating molecule, often referred to as nature’s moisturiser. Think of a newborn baby’s skin; it is soft, plump and dewy - full of hyaluronic acid! As we age, the level of HA diminishes, this can be due to many factors such as free radical damage from the sun, environmental pollution and of course dietary choices we make. So how can we stop the ageing process? We can’t, but we sure can slow it down! Think intense hydration, increasing production of collagen and preventing loss of elasticity

of your skin. Terranova is the first supplement company to work with Full Spectrum Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid. The size of the HA molecule defines where it can be absorbed in the different tissues within our body. For example, low molecular weight HA is only suited for skin tissue and higher molecular weight is only suited for connective tissue in joints. It is impossible to define which weight is the most suitable for each individual. So why not take a Hyaluronic acid supplement that has low, medium, high and everything in between! That’s where Terranova Full Spectrum Hyaluronic Acid jumps above and beyond. By using a new technological approach, Exception HYAL Star delivers this unique approach to ensure that we get the most out of taking this amazing supplement. Based on a collection of molecule sizes, Exception HYAL Star does not focus on a specific molecular weight but rather how this range of compounds work in synergy, just as how it naturally occurs in our skin. What are the ingredients in Terranova Hyaluronic Acid Complex? Now imagine combining Exception HYAL Star technology with Terranova’s own powerhouse of unadulterated, mostly organic, freeze-dried plant ingredients aka Magnifood!! By choosing specific synergistic botanicals that are naturally rich in vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients and enzymes, Terranova provides your body with the ultimate beauty product. These powerful, skin-nourishing ingredients include rosehips, nettle leaf, horsetail spring shoots and parsley leaf. Always remember there is a reason for every single ingredient within the Magnifood Complex, exclusively formulated to enhance the activity, absorption, stability and function of our friend hyaluronic acid.

TRANSFORMING LIVES: Nora Butler, who lost over five stone, is opening a Slimming World group in the KDYS Fairhill and plans to transform lives. Photo: Michelle Crean

Nora plans to transform Killarney people's lives One woman’s five stone weight loss spurred her to become a Slimming World consultant – and she’s ready to take on a new group in Killarney. Nora Butler, who felt too embarrassed to join a public group after her weight had slowly crept up since her teens, signed up online to try and lose the weight alone. “Every day I struggled,” Nora told the Killarney Advertiser. “I had a limited wardrobe of clothes that were not shapely, unflattering and covered my lumps and bumps. My physical health started to deteriorate. It's sad to say that ultimately my weight was robbing me of living my best life.” However, after losing 2.5 stone to have a second child, she had a major set-back after suffering the devastating loss of her eight-hour-old newborn son Odhran at 41 weeks. “My world was absolutely and utterly destroyed,” Nora said. “I could have decided to throw in the towel and accept the cards that were dealt to me. My husband and I decided to try again, and we had to wait six months. In this time, I again focused on health and nutrition and being well. We mourned our son, we always will, but we had to fight on. In October 2014, after a tumultuous 35 weeks, my son Conal came into our lives. After he was born, I slipped into a rut and became comfortable in my existence again and started taking my

health for granted.” However, it was after she saw a picture of herself holding Conal at an event, it spurred her on to join a Slimming World group. “After eight weeks I went along to an event to find out more about becoming a consultant.” The former KDYS Community Youth Worker was successful and opened a SW group in Castleisland in 2015. “In May 2016 I moved groups to Tralee and I've now been given an opportunity to open a group in Killarney in the KDYS Youth Centre.” Nora's weight loss has changed her life and given her a new career so much so that she’s now transforming people’s lives. “My key message is that people can eat normal everyday foods such as chips and burgers, curries etc. including fakeaway food swaps, not starvation,” she said. “I will support them. I didn't let my loss define me. With my skills from SW coupled with my four years-experience as a consultant, I'm confident of helping people to genuinely transform their lives. I'm looking forward to helping the people of Killarney town and its environs to live happier healthier lives.” Nora's SW takes place every Thursday in KDYS Fairhill, Killarney at 7.30am, 9.30am and 11.30am. New running group to tackle mental health | By Michelle Crean One local man has gone from feeling a bit upside down to feeling a whole lot better thanks to running – and now he is planning to help others. David McCarthy from Tiernaboul, felt life had lost its spark and often battles with bouts of depression. However, he turned his life around when he took to the roads. Now he runs three mornings a week and wants to help others help themselves by inviting them along for the first run next Tuesday, November 26. “I started running and my world changed,” David told the Killarney Advertiser. “I stopped running and life really changed for the worst. Now I run three days a week and I would like to take you with me. I promise you will feel better. You may not be able to change your life but you can change the way you feel about your life. Trust me, I have been there but thankfully much less now. I drank and

smoked for years and never exercised. I got depressed but didn't know it until I started to see repeat life patterns and realised I was not right. I know that wallowing in your own misery is easier than doing something about it but you have to take this first step.” David's routine includes running at 7.30am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Ross Castle and then 8am every Saturdays on the Old Kenmare Road. “You don’t need to be an athlete and you don’t even need to be fit, that will come as a by-product, you just have to want to feel better,” he said. “To start, you decide how far you run, but the next time you run you must try to go a little further.” Anyone interested in improving their health through running can call David on 086 0776940 or just text to say you’re coming on a run. “This is free. Your happiness and well-being is only down the road. Break the monotony and feel better,” he said. “We'll be dead for a long time so enjoy your life.”

New technology digitally scans the eye Eyes are amazing, complex and precious, and deserve the best possible care, treatment and attention – and that’s why Stack O’Brien Opticians have invested in the latest technology, a globally acclaimed instrument which digitally scans and photographs your eyes. The OCT monitors and the human retina, which is a thin and sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This complex structure supplies the retina with blood, explained Diarmuid O'Sullivan Optometrist and proprietor of Stack O’Brien Opticians. “Everyone’s retina is different – indeed, a set of identical twins do not share similar patterns. Sometimes, retinal patterns may be altered in the cases of diabetes, glaucoma or other retina degenerative disorders. A retinal scan of a patient’s eye can instantly pick up

any changes to the health of the eyes and we will be able to advise on the next steps you should take.” It’s a quick and comfortable non-invasive treatment, Diarmuid explained. “You can even get to see an amazing 3-D illustration of your eye with the OCT, enabling us to talk you through the findings right there in the consultation room.” Retinal screeners that digitally scan the eyes are very accurate and are one small step everyone can take to not only check-up on the health of their eyes, but indeed their overall health as high blood pressure and diabetes can be picked up by the optometrist using these instruments. “When you consider how precious our health is, and our sight, it’s a logical step to book in an eye test.” The service is available now for patients. For more information or to book an OCT scan call us on 064 6636477.

HOLY SHOW! Ray and Eoin O’Sullivan and Ann Eager launching the play 'A Papal Blessing' a two-act play from Killarney playwright Ray O'Sullivan.

Hilarious play is a “holy show”! A brand new two-act play from a Killarney playwright guarantees to create a holy show with its hilarious antics and deeply-poignant story. Following on from his hugely-successful sell-out play, ‘The Rise and Rise of the Healy-Raes’, Ray O’Sullivan has now turned to divine inspiration for his latest work. ‘A Papal Blessing’ tells the story of friends Martin and Seanie who were among the 300,000 people who attended the Youth Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II in 1979. Both young men were at that Mass to witness the Pontiff utter the famous words, ‘Young people of Ireland, I love you’. But their reasons for travelling to Galway that autumn day couldn’t be more different. The consequences are that 40 years on, the Papal visit still casts a long, painful but fascinating shadow over the lives of those affected. With some hilarious exchanges and comedy-gold moments, the play also goes further to delve into issues of identity, love and the relentless yearning to belong in an ever-changing rural Ireland.

Directed by Pádraig Dennehy, this brand-new, original two-act play stars Ray O’Sullivan (as Martin), Eoin O’Sullivan (as Seanie) and Ann Eager (as Mammy). Killarney dates include December 7 in Beaufort Community Centre at 8.30pm and on January 11 in the INEC Acoustic Club, Killarney at 8pm. It will also take place in the CYMS Killorglin on November 23, at 8pm. “I’m very proud and excited to stage my second play, following on from the success of ‘The Rise and Rise of the HealyRaes,’ Ray said. "I love to give people a good night out with lots of laughter, but in doing that, I also like to explore themes that still urge us to ask questions of ourselves, and even still tend to make us uncomfortable at times.” He added that they learned from their last play that Kerry people do love drama and theatre. “They expect high standards and I’m hopeful that ‘A Papal Blessing’ will once again reach those high standards every audience deserves.” For further information and to book tickets please contact Ray O’Sullivan on 087 2279657.

King of coaches calls time on CIE career Family, friends and tourism industry colleagues gathered at the Killarney Avenue Hotel for a farewell function to mark Enda Kennedy’s retirement after 25 years as Head of Logistics for CIE Tours International. The Limerick man may not be a Killarney native - but he certainly was responsible for bringing countless tourists to the town for quarter of a century. At the peak of any season the Limerick man was responsible for 100 coaches that were scattered all over Ireland and the UK at any given time. As well as managing drivers and tour guides, his department was also respon-

sible for sourcing overnight accommodation for tourists that were using his services during their stay in Killarney or any other location in Ireland. Prior to taking up his role at CIE Tours International he worked for every strand of CIE including Irish Rail, Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus. Since December 1994 he was responsible for the touring arm of the company and

has seen many changes in that time. “The business grew from €20 million a year to €130 million a year, the hardest thing was actually finding rooms for guests in towns like Killarney and Galway,” he said. “At the start, hotel owners would bite the hand off you when you approached them with a big tour but as tourism grew it got harder and harder to source enough rooms.” Enda found himself in the middle of one of the greatest tragedies to ever hit Killarney but six years on he remains impressed by the town’s resilience and its community spirit. In July 2013 a gas explosion at a launderette claimed the life of popular local businessman James Gleeson. The explosion at Brewery Lane also caused widespread damage to the International Hotel and other nearby properties. Part of Kennedy’s role with CIE at the time included being a first responder in a

crisis event. “I could not believe the community spirit despite it being such a tragedy,” he said. “Every hotel made arrangements to get our guests to safety after the International was evacuated, bathrobes were given by other hotels and others opened up their function rooms to accommodate them. Within 25 minutes we were able to account for everyone and while they were off on tour for the day we were able to source other rooms for them and get their baggage relocated. The way the hotels rallied together to solve what was a crisis; I don’t think you would see that in any other town.” Despite calling time on his career with CIE, Enda is far from finished with the tour industry. He has set up Emigration Tours Ireland, a company that will specialise in bringing US tourists to their ancestral homes all over the country.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Looking after house plants during winter ART WINNERS: Karena McCarthy (Youth and Marketing Officer, Killarney Credit Union), with Credit Union Art Competition prizewinners Eva Stack (centre) who won first prize in 11-13 category, and Catherine Fleming, special category Over 18 prizewinner. Back from left are: Lily Courtney who won second prize in 11-13 category, Egle Saladziute, adult prizewinner, Natalia Gunia winner of the 14-17 category and Jennifer Lyne winner of the 14-17 category.

How do I look after my houseplant during the cold winter months? Well, indoor plants have the same requirements as those outdoors, light, water and nutrients. A general rule of thumb is to keep plants out of direct sunlight, often a south facing windowsill will cause leaves to scorch. However, there are exceptions such as geraniums, Kalanchoe, or spider plants. During the winter there is less chance of scorching, so it is fine to move plants to a spot with more light. Keep in mind though, that often radiators are placed under windows, and these are turned on more often in the winter – you may need to water more often than in the summer! Most indoor plants need to be watered sparingly, there is no set timing for it though. How often you need to water will depend on the temperature and humidity of the house. Generally if the surface of the soil feels dry it is time to water. The easiest way to water houseplants is by sitting them in a basin of water for half an hour, draining them and putting them back in their decorative pot. There

are also very handy watering systems which take the guessing out of it, for example there are sticks which change colour alerting you to water, and there are reservoirs which can be filled and placed upside down in the pot, giving a constant source of moisture. A liquid fertiliser can be added to the water every two to three weeks in the growing season, and every six weeks in the winter. Alternatively use slow-release fertiliser or fertiliser sticks. If possible, use rainwater to water your plants as it is softer and there are no chemicals such as chlorine in it.

read ‘Dear Johnnies: The 2 Johnnies Solve All Your Problems’ By The 2 Johnnies In 2010 life had been ticking along just fine for Johnny B (O’Brien) and Johnny Smacks (McMahon). Johnny B was travelling the country as part of a wedding band and Johnny Smacks, originally from Roscrea, had just moved to Cahir, where he worked at the local butchers. They became roommates, quickly bonded over a shared love of music, comedy and GAA, and the rest is history. The hugely popular comedians are the hosts of the phenomenally popular ‘2 Johnnies Podcast’. Together they have also had five number-one singles, a sold-out live tour, and now their new book, ‘Dear Johnnies: The 2 Johnnies Solve All Your Problems’, is to be published this November. The idea for the book grew from a popular and hilarious segment on their podcast, where distressed fans write in letters with their problems while

the 2 Johnnies act as agony uncles, answering their questions. The book covers all sorts of problems, from housemates to having a baby, from moving to Dublin to social media and, of course, the GAA. This could be the breakaway comedy hit of 2019!

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Arrests following threats to kill on social media Gardaí are investigating a number of threats to kill and cause serious harm to persons made on social media over the past few days.

Christmas Day Swim is nation’s favourite way to support charities According to research conducted by An Post, 55 percent of responders said that they take part in a polar swim on Christmas morning. Other activities which made the list of favourites include carol singing with 44 percent revealing it as their festive tradi-

tion, while 52 percent of those surveyed say that they will be donating food and clothes to those in need. When it comes to festive tunes ‘Fairytale of New York’, with almost half choosing that as their preferred song, well ahead of Mariah Carey’s classic ‘All I want for Christmas is You’.

An Post revealed the results of the survey at its annual Christmas stamp launch this week. This year, when you ‘Send Love with the An Post Christmas Stamps’, a contribution will be made to a special fund to be shared among charities around the country working with people who are homeless or in temporary accommodation. “This Christmas, we’re continuing our work in supporting Ireland’s homeless community with donations from our €19 Christmas booklets and we’re calling on the nation to ‘Send Love’ to their friends and family and play their part in helping to support Ireland’s homeless community get back on their feet,” said Garrett Bridgeman, An Post’s Managing Director.

Athlone Gardaí conducted a number of planned searches yesterday (Thursday) morning. A number of electronic devices and weapons were seized during the searches. These searches involved Garda resources from Athlone and the Regional Support Unit. During the course of these searches three males from the Athlone area were arrested. One male is in his late 40s and the other two males are in their 20s. These males were detained at Mullingar and Athlone Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. Gardaí in Athlone are liaising with the PSNI in relation to the persons arrested and the social media videos may be connected to a recent serious incident in Fermanagh, which is under investigation by the PSNI.

Freedom of the press: not on my watch The United Nations' 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference, and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers.” In simple terms, the media, especially national and international organisations can hold the Government to task. A good Irish example is the recent

case involving Swing Gate Fine Gael’s Maria Bailey after the Irish Independent broke the story on how the Dun Laoghaire TD was suing a hotel after she fell off a swing. The story, ultimately killed Baily’s political career – she was removed from the Fine Gael general election ticket earlier this week. She may not agree with press freedom rules in this country but as citizens we were all entitled to know. Take that story and apply it to the current situation in the United States. President Trump is under investigation for allegedly, among other

things, pressuring a foreign country to investigate one of the President’s main domestic political rivals. Trump’s impeachment is being widely reported in international media and he seems to be getting a little uncomfortable that his dealings with the Ukraine Government are finding their way in to the public domain. “We have a phony press. We don’t have freedom of the press in this country. We have a phony press. They’re dishonest, most of them,” he said on Wednesday. Maria Bailey would surely agree.

Kerry Women’s Refuge survey to enhance services Kerry Women’s Refuge and Support Service ADAPT is currently undertaking a review of its services for its forthcoming strategic plan, to further enhance and develop its services.

WINNER: Roland Ujbanyi from The Parknasilla Hotel and Spa who won the IHF/ Kerry branch Employee of the Year 2019 Award pictured at a special function in the International Hotel, Killarney on Wednesday.

As part of the review, they are inviting anybody who has used the ADAPT services to complete a survey questionnaire. “We are asking women who have used our services anytime since 1996 to go to our website or Facebook page and tell us what they feel we should put in place to better respond to women and children who need support because of domestic violence,” said Catherine Casey

General Manager with ADAPT. ADAPT confirmed that all responses are completely confidential and anonymous. The service has asked Dr Brendan O'Keeffe to independently undertake this research and that he will be the only person who will have access to the responses received. This questionnaire, which has a deadline on December 18, does not collect any personal or identifying data and is GDPR compliant, she added. To access the survey, please visit the ADAPT website: www.kerryrefuge.com or Facebook page: Facebook: adaptkerrywomensrefuge.

Roland named ‘Hotel Employee of the Year’ A dedicated member of staff at the Parknasilla Resort and Spa in Sneem has been crowned ‘Employee of the Year’ at the annual Kerry IHF awards luncheon in the International Hotel, Killarney on Wednesday. Roland Ujbanyi, who works as a therapist in the hotel’s spa and leisure centre, will now go on to represent the county at national level. A native of Hungary and a qualified PE teacher, Roland arrived in Ireland in 2015 without a word of English and started work in Parknasilla as a kitchen porter. He taught himself the language by placing a new word on a board in the kitchen every day and learning it. He later enrolled for English classes and is now learning Irish. He worked his way up to the position of spa therapist and he has hugely impressed his employers and work colleagues. Parknasilla Resort Deputy General Manager, Keara O’Brien, who nominated him for the award, said Roland is one of the

most diligent and experienced members of staff and a great team player who never wants to stop learning. She said he is always willing to help out wherever he is needed and he is like an unofficial manager in the hotel. Roland will now represent Kerry in the national ‘Employee of the Year’ competition and the winner will be revealed at the IHF national conference in Galway in February. To celebrate his success at a Kerry IHF awards luncheon in the International Hotel, Killarney on Wednesday, Kerry branch chair, Bernadette Randles, presented the winner with a framed awards certificate, a €250 voucher and an invitation for two people to the Kerry IHF Ball in the five-star Aghadoe Heights Hotel in Killarney this December. A total of 14 employees, representing all disciplines within the hotel industry, were nominated for the award and following interviews and extensive deliberations, the panel of adjudicators announced the winner at the Kerry IHF ceremony.

Pope condemns exploitation of women in Thailand Pope Francis yesterday (Thursday) condemned the exploitation of women and children in Thailand, which is notorious for its sex tourism. Pope Francis started his first full day in Thailand by addressing politicians and diplomats gathered in Government House.

“I think, too, of all those women and children of our time, especially those who are wounded, violated and exposed to every form of exploitation, enslavement, violence and abuse,” he said. Thailand attracts some 35 million tourists a year and the Government has sought to shed the country’s reputation for sex tourism.

Funding for Tralee Skate Park Kerry Sinn Féin councillors Pa Daly and Cathal Foley have welcomed the announcement that €70,000 has been provided to the proposed Skate Park at Tralee Sports Complex. "We very much welcome the announcement that €70,000 has been provided towards the provision of a skate park for the young people of Tralee and sur-

rounding areas,” Cllr Pa Daly said. “This proposal was originally made by former councillor Toireasa Ferris who has pursued this issue over many years. This project needs to be commenced as soon as possible to ensure our youth get the greatest benefit possible. We need to develop many more projects like this throughout the county for our young people."

Winter wedding ideas There’s nothing more romantic than a winter wedding – those cozy fires, hot drinks and the possibility of snow! However, as it’s the colder time of year, here are some ideas to get the best out of your day.

CHOOSE SEASONAL FLOWERS

The colder season offers an enchanting array of flowers to make up your winter bouquet and bring your venue to life. Deep red roses styled with fruit and berries or icy green leaves work well, while an abundance of green foliage and white flowers makes for a subtle

yet stylish approach.

WRAP UP Choosing the perfect dress is a bride’s dream but with a winter wedding think about buying an extra layer like a long faux fur trim or a satin white or ivory bridal hooded cape.

TIME YOUR PHOTOS RIGHT Take photos while there’s still plenty of light. Later on in the day you could offer guests sparklers instead of confetti to create some photo opportunities to treasure.

Fun ideas to get your child moving Believe it or not, creating fun exercises for your kids in the early years is vital for how they will function throughout the remainder of their lives.

The quality of a child’s early experiences plays a significant role in their development of their physical, intellectual, emotional and social skills. If you have a child or children who likes to engage in active play more than likely they will stay active and be physically fit in the future. Balancing, walking, and playing are the foundations for your child’s strength and balance. Below are five simple ideas that you can use to help keep your child active: 1. Bunny Hops: Hop like a bunny around the house or set up a really simple obstacle course that they will perform in that ‘bunny hop position’. These hops will work on mobility and flexibility to get into that position and also lower body power when jumping up and down. 2. Musical Statues: Play some music and have your child dance or move freely, when the music stops the child must freeze like a statue. This will work on balance and stability. 3. Donkey: A great game for working on hand eye coordination by throwing the ball to one another. Don’t drop that ball or else you will add a letter each time until someone reaches the work ‘Donkey’. 4. Lava Floor: Set up obstacles that the child must jump onto, trying not to touch the ground because that floor is lava!

!

5. Flappy Birds: Children will find this one funny. Make sure to play the song ‘Gangnam Style’ and have the child jump around and flap their arms like a bird. A game of Musical Statues can also be implemented here and don’t forget to join in yourself! There is no end to what you come up with for keeping your child active. Keep in mind there has to be constant encouragement for your child to stay active. Dance, play, and incorporate active toys, such as balls, rings and hula hoops. Keep practicing with your child and you will see great improvement in their motor skills. As always, if you’re not confident with dancing along to ‘Gangnam Style’, or jumping around like a bunny, then please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me at shane@activate.ie or else direct message Activate on Facebook or Instagram and book your child in for our popular youth classes. Happy playing!

Say goodbye to ‘Black Friday’ and hello to ‘Green Friday’ by buying Irish brands and products on November 29, urges a leading Irish retailer. An initiative led by Marian O’Gorman of Kilkenny to champion a movement to support Irish brands and businesses is being backed by bodies such as the Design and Crafts Council, Retail Excellence, SFA, Enterprise Ireland and the Chambers of Commerce to reawaken people to the significance of buying Irish, shopping local, and the wealth of talent and enterprise behind Irish craft and design businesses. A national campaign is encouraging people in Ireland to drive our economy, support jobs and nurture our creative community in these uncertain times by purchasing Irish goods on one of the busiest shopping days of the year - the last Friday in November. Previously, Black Friday and Cyber Monday have been enthusiastically embraced by Irish consumers, with more than €50 million spent over the course of the weekend in 2018. “Our survey of consumers shows that 84 percent prefer to buy from Irish suppliers,” Marian O’Gorman said. “This does not surprise me as Irish brands and products are second to none and, as a nation, we have many that are leaders on a world stage. “We, as consumers, need to appreciate the fundamental fact that by keeping money in circulation in our own communities, we are protecting jobs and public services.”

Around €4.65 billion will be spent by Irish shoppers during the Christmas period, based on research from Retail Ireland. Green Friday is designed to remind consumers of the power that they yield and the effect their support has on the designers, makers and businesspeople of the country. Brands and businesses are encouraged to market their products under the Green Friday banner, highlighting the value of shopping locally. Successful Kenmare motorcycle festival The first ever Overlanders Motorcycle Reunion in Kenmare was deemed a success by event organisers. The three-day event, which took place last weekend, was a celebration of motorcyclists who had spent at least some time this year exploring far corners of the world. Wexford-based Overlanders offer adventure motorcyclists a transport service to and from worldwide destinations. Their mantra is that riders spend too much time getting to and from their destination reducing their time at the location. Overlanders’ service means that motorcyclists can fly directly to their destination where the Overlanders truck will be waiting for them and their holiday adventure starts on location rather spending days getting there. So far this year the Wexford-based firm organised trips to Corsica, Morocco and

Italy, to name just three destinations. The Kenmare reunion brought nearly 250 motorcyclists from all over Ireland together. All of them had experienced an Overlanders trip this season and the weekend was made up of social gatherings in Kenmare and ride-outs to iconic Kerry destinations like the Gap of Dunloe. “We’re just back from an absolutely fantastic weekend at the first ever Overlanders Reunion in Kenmare and we’re completely wrecked,” said Overlanders founder David Ryanhart. “Massive thanks to all who attended from all corners of the country. It was fantastic catching up with everyone and an excellent turnout for the middle of November with over 90 bikes and almost 250 people in the Kenmare Bay Hotel over the weekend. As always there was much laughter and a lot of craic into the wee hours.”

Rathmore garage celebrates 30 years as Renault dealer Donagh Hickey Motors shares a unique anniversary with one of Ireland’s best loved cars. The Rathmore-based family-run garage celebrated its 30th anniversary as a Renault dealer in recent weeks. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Renault Clio’s launch in Ireland. The all-new fifth generation Clio has just arrived on Irish shores and continues the trend for success and innovation set by the original model three decades ago. In the 30 years since the iconic supermini first went on sale, the Clio has become Renault’s best-selling model worldwide, with 15 million Clios finding homes and shows no signs of slowing down, having proved to be Europe’s most popular B segment model since 2013. The all-new Clio also continues Re-

nault’s strong tradition for safety, having already been awarded a five-star EuroNCAP rating. The arrival of the new Clio coincided with the local dealer’s celebration and the occasion was marked with a special award that was presented by Renault Ireland at its annual dealer convention that took place at Hotel Europe in Killarney late last month. “We are absolutely thrilled to have grown from strength to strength over the last 30 years and we are now getting ready to sell our 2020 (201) cars. It is a testament to our loyal customers for choosing Donagh Hickey Motors again and again. We are absolutely delighted with these awards,” Donagh Hickey said. The all new Renault Clio is currently in the firm’s Rathmore showroom. Donagh Hickey Motors is also the Dacia dealer for County Kerry.

Crokes survive late scare to advance in O’Donoghue Cup EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: QUARTER-FINAL _________________________________________________________________________________

Dr Crokes

3-16 | Kilcummin 3-15

LEWIS ROAD Defending champions Dr Crokes booked their passage to the semi-final stage of this year’s East Kerry Championship with a thrilling one-point victory over Kilcummin on Sunday. The Crokes appeared to have the game wrapped up as they led by six heading into injury time but a rousing Kilcummin comeback made for a cagey final few seconds for the hosts. In the end, Edmund O’Sullivan’s side just about held firm to secure the victory, although questions will surely be asked as to how a two-goal lead virtually disintegrated in a matter of minutes. For Kilcummin it was a case of too little, too late.

GOALS

November football can often be dour

and low-scoring but any concerns that this quarter-final would be typical winter fare were allayed in the opening seconds when Crokes all-rounder Brian Looney burst through the middle and fired a left-footed shot beyond the reach of Brendan Kealy in the Kilcummin goal. It was the worst possible start for Kilcummin, who at this stage may well have been getting flashbacks of last December when they were obliterated by the same opposition in the final. They needed a point just to settle the nerves and they went one (or two) better in the third minute when Paul O’Shea gathered a loose ball, sat Shane Murphy down with a dummy hop and tapped in a lovely goal to level the scores. Two goals is a remarkable way to start any match and they certainly set the tone

for what turned out to be a pulsating local derby with all the trimmings. It was real end-to-end stuff in the first quarter with little to separate the teams but Crokes got a second goal midway through the first period when Tony Brosnan appeared to get the final touch on a breaking ball. Kilcummin stayed in touch courtesy of Gary O’Leary, Noel Duggan and a monster of a point by Shane McSweeney but the Crokes led by two, 2-9 to 1-10, at the break.

LEAD

The All-Ireland Intermediate champions were certainly giving a good account of themselves and they started the second half in rambunctious fashion. Matt Keane and Enda O’Sullivan pointed and when Shane McSweeney burst through for an inspirational goal in the 36th minute, the visitors found themselves in the lead. This spurred the Crokes into action and driven on by the excellent Brian Looney, half-time substitute Gavin White and the ever-reliable Johnny Buckley, they

promptly turned the match back in their favour. When Tony Brosnan teed up Mikey Casey for the simplest of goals in the 46th minute, the county finalists led by four. It was a crushing blow for Kilcummin and as the clock ticked towards 60, it appeared for all the world as though the game was gone. Crokes led by six heading into additional time, but the superb Paul O’Shea gave his side a lifeline in the 62nd minute when he somehow managed to crack a 13-metre free through a sea of black and amber bodies on the goal line. It was game on now as Kilcummin went in search of an unlikely winning goal. However, the Crokes, desperate to avoid a disastrous collapse, filtered men back behind the ball, which in turn forced their opponents to settle for points. They managed two to make it a onepoint game but when Crokes forced a turnover around 30 yards out from their own goal on the terrace side, the game was up.

were unable to match their Division 1 conterparts for firepower. Spa join Dr Crokes in the hat for the semi-final draw which will take place once the remaining quarter-finals are played this weekend.

Fresh from his county final heroics in the red and white of East Kerry, Cronin was in typically menacing form as he registered 1-5 in a virtuoso, Man-of-theMatch display. O’Donoghue matched his young colleague on the scoring charts and together with David Spillane, who scored a goal in each half, they accounted for the bulk of Spa’s finaly tally. Michael Foley (0-2), Ryan O’Carroll (0-2) and Niall McCarthy also found the target for the hosts. Mike McCarthy kicked 1-2 for Currow, the goal coming from the penalty spot, and Pa McCarthy added 0-4 but they

EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER-FINALS PREVIEW Killarney Legion v Fossa Sunday at 1pm Derreen

All things considered, 2019 has been a bit of a mixed bag for the Legion. Positive results in the Club Championship against Kerins O’Rahilly’s and Rathmore were followed by a decent league campaign (they will likely finish fourth in Division 1) but a disappointing Kerry SFC exit at the hands of St Brendan’s was a bitter pill to swallow. An O’Donoghue Cup triumph would certainly be a nice way to end the decade but at the very least they will be keen to avoid a similar fate to last year

Gneeveguilla v Rathmore Sunday at 2pm Gneeveguilla

Recently-promoted Gneeeveguilla take on recently-relegated Rathmore in a potentially explosive local derby on Sunday. Gneeveguilla earned promotion to Division 2 of the County League on the back of an impressive campaign which saw them win eight and draw three of their 11 fixtures, and they were crowned Division 3 champions when they defeated Ballydonoghue in the final last weekend.

when they suffered a shock defeat to Currow in the last eight. Standing in their way in this year’s quarter-final are a Fossa team who have endured a torrid time of late. The club from the outskirts of Killarney crashed out in the group stages of the Junior Premier Championship and were relegated from Division 3 of the County League having picked up just two wins in 11 attempts. Last weekend they were knocked out of the Intermediate East Kerry Championship (Fr Galvin Cup) by Scartaglen. Fossa are likely to be bolstered by the return of star players Paudie and David Clifford but realistically, as a senior club, Legion should have too much strength in depth to be troubled by their neighbours. Near neighbours Rathmore have also done well in the league. In fact, they are bound for the Division 1 final where their opponents will either be Austin Stacks, Dr Crokes or Dingle. However, their championship form was less satisfactory and following their recent defeat to Kilcummin, Liam Hassett’s side have been demoted to intermediate for the first time in 20 years. The O’Donoghue Cup has been a happy hunting ground for Rathmore in recent times. They will be keen to get one over on their fierce rivals on Sunday and go on to challenge for an East Kerry title that could help salvage their season.

Who will make your County Championship TEAM OF THE DECADE?

As East Kerry’s spectacular county final victory over Dr Crokes brings the final curtain down on the 2010s, it’s time to reflect on a historic decade for the Kerry Senior Football Championship. From Crokes’ four-in-row to Austin Stacks’ and South Kerry’s sole triumphs, and Crokes domination again to East Kerry ending their 20-year famine, it has been a period of great entertainment and high quality for Kerry football’s showpiece tournament. Some of the finest Kerry footballers of all time have played starring roles for their respective teams over the past 10 years; now we must bring them all together and crown the Team of the Decade. In two weeks’ time, the Killarney Advertiser will name a dream team of 15 superstars and we want to hear from our readers. Of all the players who have lined out in the County Champi-

onship since 2010, who would make your perfect team? To vote for your favourites, simply email your 15 (one goalkeeper, six backs, two midfielders and six forwards) to sport@killarneyadvertiser. ie. Closing date for submissions is next Friday, November 29. Your votes will be tallied and combined with those of Killarney Advertiser sports editor Adam Moynihan and long-time Killarney Advertiser sports columnist Eamonn Fitzgerald. The Team of the Decade will then be announced in the Killarney Advertiser on December 6. “Some unbelievable players have graced the Kerry Senior Football Championship in the last 10 years so it’ll be very hard

to whittle it down to just the bare 15,” Adam said. “Dr Crokes have been dominant so you would expect a number of their lads to make the cut, but there have also been memorable performances from guys who were maybe less successful in terms of titles. The great thing about picking a team like this is that it’s totally subjective, so one reader might include players I never even thought of and vice versa. I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s teams. There are bound to be some surprises.” Adam confirmed that every player who has played senior County Champion-

HOW TO VOTE

ship since 2010 is eligible for selection, although he did urge readers to choose players in their correct positions where possible. “There will be no Brian Howards in this team!” he joked. “Some allowances will be made but generally speaking we want forwards in the forwards and backs in the backs. If a guy has played more than one position then naturally we’ll take that into account but you certainly can’t put Gooch corner back just to fit everyone in. That carry on will be frowned upon.” Get involved and make sure your favourite players get the credit they deserve.

Send your Kerry SFC Team of the Decade (numbered 1-15) to sport@killarneyadvertiser.ie by Friday, November 29!

Brian Spillane’s team have been in remarkable form so far this season, putting their opposition to the sword and playing electrifying football in the process. The Celts beat Munster Senior League outfit Everton 4-0 in the opening round of the Champions Trophy and they have also made light work of a string of opponents in the FAI Junior Cup, Munster Junior Cup, League Cup and Kerry District League, racking up a whopping 45 goals in just nine games. Incredibly, they have conceded just twice. Their opponents this weekend, Hibernians, are sure to provide a stern test. The Waterford club defeated Knocknaheeny of the Cork AUL in Round 1, although the reigning champions currently find themselves in fourth place in the Waterford Premier League with an indifferent record of three wins and three defeats.

BALLYMALIS Saturday’s highly competitive and entertaining affair played in excellent conditions in Ballymalis certainly showcased the depth and quality of underage rugby in this part of Kerry. BOSS: Scotts Lakers head coach Shane McCarthy speaks to his players. The Lakers are now fourth in Division 1. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.

Lakers unable to match Mathews

A poor opening quarter contributed largely to the downfall of Scotts Lakers as they were overpowered by Fr Mathews in Bishopstown last Saturday night. NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 1 ___________________________________________________________________________________

Fr Mathews

84 | Scotts Lakers 74

BISHOPSTOWN

| By Eamonn Keogh The home side gained a 15-point advantage by the end of the first period and despite the best efforts of the Killarney side, they were always chasing the game thereafter. The Lakers could only manage nine points in a dismal first quarter and these came from two free throws from Victor Martínez, two baskets from Aaron Jackson and a three-pointer from Séamus Brosnan. Fr Matthews sank four three-pointers in the opening period through Jarvis Pugh, Declan Cahill and Darco Bucan and the Cork side enjoyed a comfortable 24-9 advantage at the end of this period. Scotts Lakers did respond well with converted free throws from Séamus Brosnan and a three-pointer from Brian O’Neill while Aaron Jackson and Toby Christensen added two free throws and two baskets each. Martínez and Mark Greene also added scores but Mathews remained in control, mainly through baskets from Pugh and Jack O’Mahony, and they led 45-29 at the half-time interval. The Lakers actually outscored Fr Mathews in the third quarter but it wasn't enough to catch up with the home side as Mathews led 66-51 entering the final period.

The Lakers outscored the home side again in the final quarter but struggled to claw back the overall deficit. Brian O’Neill hit a big three-pointer, his third of the night, and Séamus Brosnan, who was enjoying his best game of the season, added another three-pointer, two further baskets and a free throw. In the end, Fr Mathews had 12 points to spare and the Cork side and LYIT Donegal both enjoy a 7-1 winning record and are joint second on the league table. Ballincollig still lead the way with an 8-0 record while Scotts Lakers have dropped into fourth place with a 6-3 record. Whatever about losing to league favourites Ballincollig earlier in the season, the disappointing losses to Fr Mathews and Limerick Celtics could prove very costly to any promotion hopes as the season progresses. The Killarney side have a tough test again this weekend with a big road trip to Ulster University Elks in Belfast on Saturday. The northerners have a 3-6 record so far this season and the Lakers will be favourites to prevail but the long journey and early tipoff of 12.30pm will be significant factors.

Killarney got back to winning ways but like all previous fixtures in the group it was a tight, rollercoaster of a game. Killarney started brightly and enjoyed territory and possession with the forward pack in particular gaining hard yards and recycling with control. Pressure was rewarded with a well-slotted penalty by Ciarán O’Brien after 10 minutes which gave the visitors a three-point lead. Killorglin then enjoyed a period of dominance and came very close to touching down in the left corner before eventually also settling for three points, drilled over by fullback Shane Óg O’Sullivan. A feature of the game was the intensity of the attacking pods powering into contact and the resultant groundwork. Both teams displayed impressive counter-rucking and poaching skills and any weaknesses in ball presentation were punished. After 20 minutes, Killarney used their depth to rotate five players. They used their fresh legs to forge attacking positions but generally the home team’s midfield defence was ruthless in extinguishing the threat. A breakthrough arrived after 25 minutes when a successful lineout catch by John McCarthy set a maul pummelling into the 22. The ball was forcefully moved through a number of phases before back row speedster Matt McAuliffe sliced through a gap to score under the posts. Ciarán O’Brien added the conversion. Killarney pressed further before half-time and, following some super interplay, they forced a penalty that was secured to leave the half-time score at 13 to 3 for the visitors. The second half was a tense and excit-

ing affair that ebbed and flowed, mainly between the 10-yard lines. Both teams threw everything they had into attack but it was a day when the tackling was intense, line breaks were rare and defences were dominant. Considering that a lot of the on-field players were teammates last season, both teams displayed an awareness of the other’s power points and the mutual respect on show was commendable. Killorglin piled every ounce of energy into one final siege on the tryline for the last few minutes. The Killarney boys held firm, however, and kept the door shut. The front row combo of Ciarán O’Brien, Craig McKenzie Vass and Rob Nealon again excelled as a unit, driving the scrum forward and performing at the coalface. The rotating second row of Krystian Komosa, Pádraig Talbot, Evan Mannix, Sam Casey and Adam McSweeney covered every inch, bravely tackling and rucking. John McCarthy soared in the lineout and was ably assisted in the backrow by powerhouses Brendy O’Donoghue and captain Matt McAuliffe. Killarney’s backline competed superbly against a very coherent and versatile Killorglin unit. Cian Murphy’s kicking was excellent and several yard-eating penalties from hand stood out. Dion O’Neill’s tackling was inspirational. Wingers Tomás Clifford, Ronan Buckley, Michael Casey, James Kennelly and Aidan Keane probed with ball in hand and defended the wide channels. Centres Mark Sheahan, Donnchadh Grealy and Adam Walsh constantly took ball bravely into a fiercely combative strike zone. Fullback Gary Randles displayed his array of football skills and stoutly defended the line. Able reserves on the day were Adam Cronin and Jack O’Connell. Next up for Killarney is the visit of Newcastlewest-Estuary in the final round of the league on Saturday. Kick-off is at 12.30pm.

R ecord entry for Historic Rally

Rally fans are looking forward to the biggest Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally ever with some of the sport’s top names set to start the November 30 event. Organiser, Killarney and District Motor Club, has attracted a record entry, with over 190 crews vying for the 160 available starting places. |

N ew car for Andrew Duggan

Local driver Andrew Duggan, brother of Rob, will give his newly built Ford Escort Mk2 its maiden outing on next weekend’s historic rally. Andrew finished seventh in the national section of this year’s Rally of the Lakes in a hired Escort. His sister Tara will co-drive, making it three members of the Duggan family on the entry list. |

I nternational feel to this year’s rally

Entries have come from all over Ireland, England, the Isle of Man and Wales. The inclusion of Belgian champion Paul Lietaer in an Opel Manta 400 and Rathmore native Jack Kelleher, who is returning from his Australia base, shows the rally is really an international event in all but name.

By Sean Moriarty

London-based Listowel man Ray Hillard has his Escort Mk1 fully repaired since his Rally of the Lakes shunt. Killarney native Mick Smith is another making the trip from the UK capital and he will drive the same Chrysler Avenger he used on the Rally of the Lakes earlier this year. Local co-driver Shane Buckley also makes the trip from London. |

F ormer winners to the fore

Last year’s winner Owen Murphy has switched from his event-winning Talbot Sunbeam and will start in a Ford Escort Mk2. Rally of the Lakes winners Craig Breen and Paul Nagle will take the challenge to Murphy and they will field another Escort. Local drivers are well represented too with former winner Mark Falvey set to return in his ex-Billy Coleman Ford Escort Mk1 and Todd Falvey fielding another MK2 variation. Alan Ring, a previous Rally of the Lakes podium finisher, will give his newly built BMW M3 its first taste of home roads while former Rally of the Lakes national rally winner Rob Duggan will compete in the historic rally proper for the first time in a hired Escort. Former Rally of the Lakes winner Darragh O’Riordan makes a rare outing in a modified event but can't be ruled out of overall category contention either.

Killarney Advertiser fantasy league now the biggest in Kerry The Killarney Advertiser fantasy football league is officially the biggest league of its kind in the county. The Brian James-sponsored competition, which was launched for the first time in 2017, now has 925 participants, more than any other league in Kerry. With monthly prizes up for grabs and a €250 voucher for the overall winner in May, The Killarney Advertiser League (formerly Serie A-dvertiser) has quickly established itself as the most popular fantasy competition around. Hugh Maguire from Ardfert was the latest Manager of the Month recipient and he picked up his €50 voucher at Brian James (Main Street, Killarney)

last weekend. Hugh beat off stiff competition from David O’Neill and Alexander Kelly to claim the top spot with Leicester striker Jamie Vardy contributing 40 points as captain in the final gameweek of October. Speaking at the prizegiving, Adam Moynihan of the Killarney Advertiser congratulated Hugh on his achievement and also expressed his gratitude to Brian O’Shea of Brian James, who has sponsored the competition since Day 1. “We really can’t thank Brian James enough for their continued sponsorship,” he said. “The fantastic prizes on offer are a huge part of why our league has grown to be so big in such a short period of time.”
