Heart-broken family urge public to get vaccinated Family members of the late Paul Doyle who died from COVID-19 say they are still trying to process the sudden loss and are urging the public to get vaccinated. | By Michelle Crean Paul (49) grew up in St Brendan's Terrace Killarney before settling in Killorglin with his wife Audrey and six children. Paul played underage for Legion and continued to support them throughout his life. He also followed Killarney Legion closely and was a big Wolves fan. In August he contracted the virus and after seven weeks and a day in an induced coma, lost his hard fought battle and passed away surrounded by his heart-broken family. Paul, who was "absolutely terrified to get the vaccine" had underlying health conditions and was undecided whether to get vaccinated or not. And although as a family they booked their vaccine appointments, they contracted COVID before they could get them done. “It’s horrendous trying to comprehend

it," his sister Louise Doyle Moriarty from Muckross told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are absolutely shocked. At the age of 49 you just don't think this will happen.” With cases currently high in Kerry, she is encouraging anyone who has concerns or who is hesitating about taking the vaccine to talk to their doctor, especially those with underlying conditions. As the grandfather of one was taken from his home to the ICU in University Hospital Kerry, his last words were “I don’t care what they do to me I just want to get better,” she tearfully added. They remained hopeful that he’d make a recovery however he never regained consciousness and passed away due to respiratory failure. “They were reducing the sedation and a day later they said that things didn’t look good. There was no goodbye.” Paul loved his home town of Killarney so

much that his family decided to lay him to rest in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery. Friend of the family, Ciara Cronin, set up a GoFundMe page: 'Paul Doyle's family', to help with funeral costs.

This week the HSE set up a new mobile test centre in Killarney due to the "exceptionally high demand" for COVID tests in recent days. It's operating from 10am to 6pm at Coolgrane Training Centre, Up-

Basketball court and gym for Pinewood | By Sean Moriarty Some Killarney locals will get the chance to try their hand at basketball - or even go to the gym outdoors - thanks to new Council plans. A new basketball court and an outside gym is planned in a local housing estate after Kerry County Council agreed to lease a plot of land to Pinewood Residents Association. The Council has agreed to lease a 926 square metre plot of land to the association so they can build outdoor facilities in their estate. There was previously a basketball court in the estate and while the tarmac surface remains, the hoops are in a state of disrepair. This new move will, effectively, hand over the running of the courts to the local residents as opposed to a Council-run facility. The project had already been granted Leader funding through the South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP). A contractor has already been appointed

per Lewis Road, Ballydribbeen (Eircode V93FX01). The HSE confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that it will remain open by appointment only until this coming Monday. The HSE South said there is "a high level of community spread in the county at the moment" and that they are monitoring the increase. "We’re seeing this increase in all agegroups, and in many areas – particularly urban areas," Acting Director of Public Health for Cork and Kerry, Anne Sheahan, said. "As always, we continue to investigate clusters and outbreaks and we have not linked this increase back to any particular location or type of event. We are seeing cases in workplaces; but also as a result of social gatherings such as First Communions, Confirmations, weddings and others; and as a result of funerals. We have also noted a small number of cases in residential care settings. For that reason, I appeal to people who are not yet vaccinated to make sure they get their vaccine as soon as possible. You can register for your vaccine online on hse.ie, or you can attend a walk-in vaccination clinic to receive Dose 1 or Dose 2 of a vaccine." She added that over the last few weeks, the HSE have been rolling out a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine for residents aged over 65 in long-term residential care. "This campaign will be completed next week."

Sewerage scheme construction to start in late 2022 | By Sean Moriarty Construction of the badly needed Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme is set to begin late next year according to Irish Water.

and the only stumbling block was the transfer of the lands to the association. That was completed at Monday’s full meeting of Kerry County Council. “I made representations on their behalf through Leader,” Marie Moloney, Mayor of the Killarney Municipal District, told the Killarney Advertiser. “The tender process is done, the contractor is in place, this was the last piece of the jigsaw.”

The move has been welcomed by the Pinewood Residents Association. “It is a second chance,” secretary Eileen Mayse told the Killarney Advertiser. “This would not have happened without Marie Moloney. It is going on six or seven years, she pushed it. There was always a basketball court here but it was just left there. A lot of the kids in the estate, they have their own kids now and there are grandchildren here too."

The proposed works relate to the construction of a new wastewater pumping station, gravity sewer and associated works in Kilcummin. Wastewater from Kilcummin will then be transferred to the Killarney town sewer system for appropriate treatment at the Killarney Wastewater Treatment Plant. “This project will provide an effective and efficient wastewater collection system for the village of Kilcummin and provide for the treatment of this wastewater in an appropriate manner," said an Irish Water statement. “This, in turn, will improve water quality in the River Deenagh and Lough Leane and provide scope to facilitate future development within the catchment.”

Killarney slips in postlockdown litter rankings The first post-lockdown survey by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) shows Killarney and Tralee both deemed "clean" but have fallen in the ranking of 40 areas nationwide, to 22nd and 23rd spots respectively. Last year Killarney was in second position. While the majority of towns have cleaned up over the past 12 months, litter in the main cities has worsened to levels not seen in 10 years. Portlaoise emerged as cleanest town. The study, for the 19th year of the IBAL Anti-Litter League, found no fall-off in PPE litter across the country. "It was the reduction in the number of top-ranking sites which brought down Killarney’s overall ranking," the An Taisce report for Killarney stated. "There were no heavily littered sites. High Street, Killarney Train Station and Port Road were all in very good order, not just in regard to litter but overall maintenance. It would seem that the ‘outdoor dining’ was con-

22.10.2021 on last year. Portlaoise, which was at the very foot of the table back in 2010, topped the rankings, ahead of Leixlip and past winner Ennis. "With local authority cleaning schedules normalising again and volunteer groups re-engaged in clean-ups across the country, our towns are almost as clean as two years ago. This is still some way short of where they were in 2014, however,” IBAL’s Conor Horgan said. By contrast, the majority of urban areas fared worse than in 2020, among them Dublin, Cork and Limerick City Centres, which were all deemed ‘littered’.

CONTINUED RISE IN COVID-RELATED LITTER

tributing to the litter presence along Scott’s Street, based on the menus, food waste and salt and pepper sachets on the ground. Killarney House and Gardens is a wonderful resource and most of it was very clean, but it was impossible to ignore the litter close to the entrance/signage. The An Taisce report stated that Tralee put in "a solid performance with no seriously littered sites". "A Miscellaneous Site on Mitchel Street which was heavily littered last year has

since been boarded up and fared somewhat better but was still somewhat littered. Tralee Town Park is a lovely environment, with so many different aspects and features within, all in very good order. Work continues along The Mall, but this didn’t impact in any negative way on the litter situation." The number of areas deemed clean by An Taisce, who carry out the survey on behalf of IBAL, rose from 17 to 23. In all, 68% of towns showed an improvement

The study showed a near-30% increase in the prevalence of PPE masks on streets and an increase in alcohol-related litter such as cans and bottles. “The need for PPE has not abated – unfortunately we’re still using disposable masks, we’re still dropping them at an alarming rate and they are still not being picked up," he said. “We are consuming more outdoors and this is translating into more food and drink related litter.” Despite this, the survey showed a 20% drop in coffee cup litter. There was also a steep fall-off in cigarette butts. IBAL was once again critical of the failure of local authorities to address sites which they have previously highlighted as heavily littered, especially in urban areas. Of the 103 such sites exposed last year, fewer than half have been cleaned up in 2021.

Gardai say “no cause for panic” following robberies | By Sean Moriarty Gardai in Killarney say there is “no cause for panic” following a robbery and attempted robbery in the town over the last week. On Friday evening last, a man entered a hotel on the Muckross Road and after threatening staff he left with the contents of the till. Local gardai are investigating this incident and are appealing for witnesses. “Gardaí are investigating a burglary which occurred at a premises on the Muckross Road. The incident happened at approximately 7.25pm on Friday, October 15,” said a statement issued to the Killarney Advertiser. “A lone male, with his face covered, entered the premises holding a knife. Staff were threatened by the man and a sum of cash was handed over. The man then fled the scene. “No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.” Earlier in the week there was an attempt to rob a jewellers shop in the town centre.

Rock Road diversions end tonight (Friday) “Gardaí attended the scene of an attempted burglary that occurred in a premises on High Street, at approximately 2.55am on Monday, October 11,” said a separate statement. “No belongings were taken from the premises.” Killarney Gardai have confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that they believe both incidents are unrelated and that there's "no cause for panic" in the community. Anyone with information is asked to contact Gardaí in Killarney at 064 667 1160.

The final night of diversions in place on Rock Road due to footpath improvement works will end tonight (Friday). The road was temporary closed from 7pm to 3am each night this week and will be closed again tonight (Friday). The works will be carried out from in front of the public library and run towards the entrance to the High Street car park and involve the construction of a new footpath and associated drainage works which are being carried out in advance of the resurfacing of Rock Road.

These works form part of the Killarney Municipal District Schedule of Works Programme for 2021 and is funded via a Restoration Improvement Grant to the value of €150,813 and an Active Travel Grant of €210,000. ML Lynch Civil Engineering Ltd are carrying out the works on behalf of Kerry County Council. Temporary and VMS signs are in place along the approach road advising the public of these works. Kerry County Council appreciates your co-operation and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Science sparks winning projects for local students

Students have proved that they are bright sparks when it comes to science after winning two awards. The now Fifth Year students from Killarney Community College entered projects in the local SciFest competition when in Transition Year under the direction of their science teacher Michelle Brosnan. They began the projects during lockdown and continued once back in the classroom with the help of teacher Maire Spillane. Entries were received from schools all over Kerry and the prizes were awarded by MTU in Tralee. "The prizes were recently delivered to the school and given to students," teacher Máire Spillane, from Killarney Community College, said. "We had one very successful project being awarded prizes in not just one but two categories!"

The three students are Rachel Griffin, Luke O'Sullivan and Liam Waldron. Their project was on ‘The Deterioration of Information through Linear Communication’. The students' project involved observing how messages decay as they are passed from person to person. "The two categories they won prizes in were the ‘Accenture Maths in Science Award’ and they were a major award winner and in the ‘Intermediate Life Sciences’ category, they were awarded second place!" she said. "The students received certificates, an One4all voucher and an amazing glass trophy for their efforts. The Science department and all at Killarney Community College are very proud of their accomplishments."

Get your opinion in before town survey ends Time is running out for those who want to have their say on Killarney’s future with members of the public encouraged to take part in a town sentiment survey. An opportunity to have opinions heard at a decision-making level has arisen via an online Killarney Community Sentiment Survey, organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce in consultation with Killarney Municipal District Council, with the public being asked to share their views on what the town’s infrastructural, commercial and community priorities should be. Some of the questions asked include: What are your views on pedestrianisation in Killarney? How to you rate the retail offering in and around the town? Post-COVID, do you expect the frequency of your visits to the shops to change? What kind of new stores would you like to see setting up in town? Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Niall Kelleher, said it is imperative that as many people as possible have their say on what changes they would like to see as Killarney emerges from the pandemic. “Opinions on a whole range of issues that could impact on the town’s progress are being sought and the results of the survey, which is completely anonymous, will be analysed by an independent third party to get a full and complete snapshot of local opinion,” he said.

TOPICS

Public views on the Safe Streets project, accessibility and the standard of age-friendly and disability parking facilities are among the topics included and

Legendary accordion player, Killarney resident and Newmarket, County Cork native Liam O’Connor will pick up a Pride of Cork Award next month. The annual Pride of Cork Awards are organised by Cork Civic Life, an online lifestyle magazine dedicated to Cork people at home and abroad. The ceremony will take place on Friday, November 26 at The Clayton Hotel Silver Springs with Miriam O'Callaghan of RTÉ, PJ Coogan of The Cork's 96FM and Patri-

respondents will also be asked to outline what way their shopping habits have changed during the pandemic and how they feel COVID-19 will impact on their retail preferences going forward. “An effort will also be made to determine the level of use of facilities in Killarney National Park and just how important the park is to the local people. Views will also be sought on plans to introduce a number of new cycle paths in and around the town,” Mr Kelleher said. The opinion of the people is also being requested on issues such as public lighting, signage, litter and refuse and what steps can be taken locally to impact on concerns about climate change. cia Messinger of C103 Cork as compères. The organising committee have selected O’Connor for a ‘Pride of Cork’ award for many reasons including: “in recognition of the outstanding contribution that Liam has made to Irish music for close to 30 years in the promotion of Ireland, locally and globally”, and “in recognition of Liam being listed in the Guinness World Records as having the fastest fingers in the world on the accordion”. “I am delighted,” Liam told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is always nice to be recognised and acknowledged in your own county.”

Happy to help save the planet one bit of litter at a time are the children from Scoil Bhríde, Loreto NS, who are currently partaking in the Picker Pal Programme. It's all about taking on a litter-picking adventure in their local area as well as learning songs, reading storybooks, filling in activity books while witnessing that their real-world actions are making a positive difference and inspiring others to join the movement. Picker Pals is a unique primary school programme that gives children the tools and motivation to become the next generation of environmentalists, teacher Claire O’Meara explained. “The Picker Pal Programme is a fantastic initiative and will go a long way to raise awareness of the impact litter has on our environment," she told the Killarney Advertiser.

Real litter-picking is motivated by a Picker Pack made from upcycled dinghy sails and containing adult and child litter-picking tools, gloves, hi-vis vests and safety information. "This pack is then taken home by a different pupil every week. That child takes their adult on a litter-picking adventure. The children then tell the story of their litter-picking adventures through art and writing. Raising awareness is an essential part of the solution to littering. Picker Pals gives young people the tools and positive motivation to steward their local environment and make the world a better place." The programme, run by environmental NGO VOICE Ireland, is funded by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications and various local authorities across Ireland. Now in its third year of operation, over one thousand schools all across Ireland will be taking part in the Picker Pals programme this year. In Kerry, 29 schools are taking part, and Scoil Bhríde, Loreto is delighted to be included, she added.

Farranfore to Killarney route expected mid-2022 | By Sean Moriarty The preferred route corridor for the much anticipated Farranfore to Killarney new road scheme is expected to be revealed by the middle of next year. Between May 14 and June 25 this year, Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) undertook a public consultation on the project. At the time three potential routes were revealed and that will be whittled down to just one by the middle of next year. “It is proposed to have a Preferred Route Corridor developed by mid-2022, following which the Council will be en-

gaging in further public consultation,” a Kerry County Council official told a full meeting of the Council on Monday. During November, consultants will carry out traffic counts in the area and the results of this survey will help determine which of the three routes will be selected to go forward to the next phase. “It is envisaged that the design work on the Preferred Corridor would commence in Q4, 2022 and to have a scheme substantially developed to make an application to An Bord Pleanála in 2024,” added the official. The Kerry County Council official was responding to a request for an update on the project made by Cllr Maura HealyRae ahead of the meeting.

Council launch new plan to support economic recovery Kerry County Council has published an Economic Recovery Plan to help support and guide the county through the challenges of the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's hoped the plan, a multi-stakeholder response to the impact that COVID-19 has had, will help stimulate and support economic recovery and activity in the county. The Economic Recovery Plan addresses the need to build resilience and diversification into Kerry’s economy to respond to the additional challenges and opportunities faced by businesses in the county, including in the post-Brexit and

post-COVID-19 environment, the transition to climate neutrality, the transition to a digital economy and the opportunities presented by remote or blended working. It is a comprehensive plan with some 189 actions. Among its key objectives/targets are to rollout a significant programme to support the reopening of business in the county from targeted campaigns promoting Kerry as a leading destination

for business, tourism, investment, and study to investments in outdoor dining and performance spaces throughout the county, to deliver energy efficiency retrofitting upgrades to local authority housing stock, and public lighting, as well as the continued ‘greening’ of public buildings, to provide resilience to the impacts of climate change, for example, through the development and implementation of a Climate Action Plan, to support local enterprises in the areas of research, technology and green innovations that work towards a carbon-neutral circular economy.

GREEN TOURISM

It also includes plans to work in partnership with key stakeholders to retain, promote, and drive Kerry’s position as a premier international tourism destination, with a focus on developing green and sustainable tourism, to deliver green

22.10.2021 tourism infrastructure in the county, including greenways, walkways and the implementation of new and existing Visitor Destination Development Plans, and to support businesses on their digital journey and deliver research, upskilling and reskilling to match new opportunities in this space. The continued rollout of the National Broadband Plan will also be supported as well as facilitating the remote working infrastructure throughout the county. Launching the report, Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell said: "It is a short-medium term economic recovery plan which includes immediate COVID-19 targeted response measures and medium to longer term economic recovery measures, intended to support, stimulate and strengthen our economy and aligned with national and regional policy. The actions and investment proposed under the 10 pillars are designed to stimulate vibrancy in our towns and villages, support the sustainable growth of our key economic sectors and the future-proofing of our economy and environment." County Board open to GAA museum proposals | By Sean Moriarty The Kerry County GAA Board said it would operate “an open door policy” for any plans to build a GAA museum in the county. There have been talks at a political level to build such a museum in Kerry with political rivals in Killarney and Tralee both pushing for it to be built in their home town. Before he retired from politics in April, Michael Gleeson was campaigning to build a GAA and cultural museum on the grounds of Fitzgerald Stadium. His campaign goes back several years before the recession set in, with a €0.5 million bridging loan secured from Croke Park along with funding from Fáilte Ireland. That funding was lost with the onset of the recession before 2010. Tim Murphy, the outgoing chairman of

the Kerry County Board, has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that no approaches have been made to the County Board at executive level during his five year stint at the helm. However, he said the Board would be open to such approaches provided there is sound financial planning behind the project in place. “The first and most important aspect is the capital funding and my understanding is there needs to be Fáilte Ireland funding in place first,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “If it gets up and running, there needs to be very clear talks with all stakeholders so everyone knows each others expectations. A museum attracts footfall, but it costs a lot of money to run. We would offer an open door policy to all proposals but funding, first from a capital point of view and then from an operational point of view, will need to be in place.”

Killarney's "grand master" spotted in National Park | By Michelle Crean It was a wow moment for one well-known local photographer when he captured what was the shot of a lifetime - the largest deer ever found in the National Park. Former conservation ranger Peter O'Toole captured the grand master stag last Thursday morning in a rural part of the park. "When I photographed this magnificent native red deer stag early I knew that he was something special," Peter told the Killarney Advertiser. "I have been around and worked with

native red deer as a conservation ranger in Killarney National Park for many years, but I can honestly say that this stag is the largest I have ever seen." Peter said the deer has 21 points on his antlers and is larger in body size compared to the usual mature native stag who typically has between 12 and 14 points. "A master stag is a stag that is dominant during the mating season (rut), he will ward off all challengers and will successfully mate with hinds. I gave this magnificent specimen the title of Grand Master as he has no equal in the wild native red deer population in Killarney National Park."

Stunning photograph wins first prize Local amateur photographers were snap happy to hear that they had won in a recent competition.

MAGICAL RETURN: Killarney Sleigh Rides will return to town this year and tickets go on sale on Monday.

Sleigh bells are almost ready to ring in town!

Killarney Camera Club held the Open Digital competition, its first of the season, recently. It attracted a great interest with a total of 26 members entering a broad selection of high quality photographs. "Well done to Ade Desbrow who came first in the Unrestricted category with a stunning photograph titled ‘Sunflower’," Seamus Long from Killarney Camera Club, said. Ade gave an insight into how he took the photo. “I used a 50mm lens to photograph one of the sunflowers in my kitchen," he said. "Using a technique called focus stacking, I took 10 photographs at different focus points and merged them. This maximises the sharpness of the image from front to back and really brings out the detail in the leaves and the petals.”

FIRST PLACE: Ade Desbrow came first in Killarney Camera Club's recent competition.

The top three in the Unrestricted category were 1st Place: Ade Desbrow, Sunflower, 187 points, 2nd Place: Noel O’Neill, Milltown Bridge Reflections, 180 points, and 3rd Place: Seamus Long, Siskin, 177 points. "Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?" - well maybe not quite yet...... but very soon a magical Christmas experience will be returning to town. | By Michelle Crean And this Monday will be your chance to get tickets as part of the annual Christmas in Killarney Celebrations, Killarney Sleigh Rides will open their sales online at 1pm. Killarney Sleigh Rides, bought to town by Killarney Jaunting Cars and the Tangney Family, were amongst other Christmas activities, a noticeable absence last year, having over the years become a family Christmas tradition with many families from Kerry and beyond. Families and fans of the festive season will be delighted to hear that this year it is once again returning, kicking off on Saturday, November 27 and running until Sunday January 2. "This year is special because it marks the return of many Christmas experiences to the town," Laura Tangney said. "Welcoming people is an important part of what we do, so we are really looking forward to meeting and greeting families and bringing the magic of the festive season to the streets of Killarney once again." In 2010, they started with two sleighs and year on year, found there was an increased demand for tickets.

"We responded by adding further sleighs to our crew, as well as the implementation of our online booking platform, making it easier for families to book," Michael Tangney added. "This year, we are planning for it to be bigger and better than ever." Families can choose from two different Sleigh Ride experiences. The Town Sleigh Ride offers unforgettable festive fun with a Sleigh Ride through the streets of Killarney to take in the town’s array of seasonal displays and delights, including Santa’s Sleigh and Post Box, as well as St Mary’s Cathedral, alight in all its yuletide glory. The Park Sleigh Ride offers a unique setting for the most memorable Christmas moments as families journey through the winter wonderland of Killarney National Park for an opportunity to spot Santa’s deer as well as the snow-capped mountains of the MacGillycuddy Reeks, before enjoying a short stopover in Ross Castle. All Sleigh Rides depart from Christmas Island, Kenmare Place, opposite the cinema and Four-Star Pizza. A special Christmas gift is included in each experience and families are also invited to bring a treat for Rudolph! Visit www.KillarneySleighRides.com for full details on all dates and times.

CLASSIC MUSIC: The Dublin Bach Singers will perform Messiah by Handel at St Mary's Cathedral this December.

Messiah gets Christmas date at the Cathedral | By Sean Moriarty Fans of classical music are in for a rare Christmas treat with the announcement that ‘Messiah by Handel’ will be performed in St Mary’s Cathedral on December 11. The 18th century oratorio (a piece of music which tells a story) will be performed by Dublin Bach Singers, a 25 member classical music choir based in the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin. It is the choir's first ever Killarney appearance and will be their first performance anywhere since Christmas 2019. Three of the group's soloists have strong connections with Kerry. Sharon Lyons lives in Killarney, Leanne Fitzgerald is from Lixnaw, and Conor Prendiville, who will be travelling to Killarney immediately after a series of performances in the Wexford opera festival, is from Killorglin. “We do about four concerts per year,"

Dublin Bach Singers’ manager Jonathan Baum told the Killarney Advertiser. “In Killarney, we are going to do 'Messiah by Handel', which premiered in Dublin in 1742. We will have a choir, orchestra and four soloists - soprano, alto, tenor and bass. It's an oratorio about the story of Jesus, from the annunciation to the crucifixion. It's our first concert since Christmas 2019. We started rehearsing for a concert which was scheduled for March 2020 but it had to be cancelled.” The performance will be lead by music director is Blanaid Murphy. "The choir, orchestra and soloists are very excited about our first ever concert in Killarney. A performance of Messiah is always the perfect way to kick off the festive season, and we're sure the audience will love it. It might even become an annual tradition," he added. Tickets are €25 and are available at www. eventbrite.ie.

With 15 physical events and 30 online screenings this year's Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF) was yet another resounding success. | By Michelle Crean The KIFF team were overwhelmed with the level of interest and support they received over the four days of the festival. KIFF has gone from strength to strength over the past 12 months and they recently generated the largest number of film submissions in the festival’s history to date. Audiences were treated to a variety of screenings in Cinema Killarney as well as virtually online, and events included the opening night celebration in Randles Hotel Killarney, the IFTA Networking event in The Plaza Hotel, the awards ceremony in J.M. Reidy’s and the closing screening FOSCADH (Shelter) being showcased in Siamsa Tíre Tralee. Speaking about the success of KIFF 2021, Director Eibh Collins said that they are "overjoyed to have been able to return to Killarney and Tralee with KIFF this year". "It has been terrific to see filmmakers, audiences from Kerry, Ireland and even further afield, sponsors, and local businesses coming together to support the festival and to celebrate the power of cinema to connect people, either virtually or

Massive support for this year's film festival

in person." Another important highlight was the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) networking evening which took place at The Plaza Hotel on Friday. Hosted by CEO of IFTA, Áine Moriarty,

the event outlined the plans that are taking place to showcase Kerry as one of Ireland's most spectacular filming locations for international and Irish productions and opportunities for new film business in the future.

"The film industry in Ireland is growing exponentially and Kerry has the ability to attract a substantial part of this business into the country and we can all work together to make this happen,” Áine said. The event included speeches by Chief Executive of Kerry County Council Moira Murrell and Kerry Arts Officer Kate Kennelly. Siobhán O’Sullivan, Screen Kerry, also gave an exciting update on the film industry in Kerry and its future. Additionally, Director and Film Editor, Emer Reynolds, whose most recent project ‘Joyride’ was filmed in Kerry, also spoke about her experience of filming in the county and the wealth of opportunities for filming throughout the Kingdom general. The KIFF 2021 Awards Ceremony took place on Sunday in J.M. Reidy’s Killarney. There was the introduction of the Taking Flight Award, sponsored by Kerry Airport, to celebrate emerging talent in film.

Inspiring film well received at Kerry International Film Festival | By Sean Moriarty An inspiring film about camaraderie, commitment, and the astounding results a small group of passionate nature lovers have achieved premiered at the Kerry International Film Festival on Sunday. The made-in-Killarney short documentary film ‘Hatchets & Hope’ tells the story behind the volunteers that make up the Killarney Mountain Meitheal. It was well received with many members of the Killarney Mountain Meitheal volunteers there to see it for the first time on the big screen. “’Hatchets & Hope’ introduces the Killarney Mountain Meitheal, an intergenerational group of volunteers in south Kerry. Each week they hike out to pro-

tect some of Ireland’s last surviving woodland forests and south Kerry’s rare ecosystems from the alarming spread of the invasive plant Rhododendron ponticum,” director Aoibheann O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. “Despite its beautiful purple flower, the infestation of this strain of rhododendron is lethal to the local biodiversity. With the spectacular backdrop of the mountains of south Kerry, the film shows the community working to eradicate these exotic plants and stop their advance." Although Aoibheann’s parents are both from Killarney, she grew up in Zambia and South Africa. She was based in Kenya before she returned to Killarney in early 2020 and got locked down. Her work with Killarney Mountain Meitheal during this time inspired the film.

SHOEBOX: Chris Davies, local coordinator for the Killarney area, is appealing to locals to support this year's Team Hope Shoebox Appeal. Photo: Michelle Crean

Killarney Advertiser and Team Hope appeal for shoeboxes The Christmas Shoebox Appeal is well underway and the Killarney team are appealing to locals to get involved. Team Hope’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal is an annual campaign that delivers gifts straight in to the hands of children affected by poverty. Often these shoebox gifts are the only thing that a child will receive at Christmas and the joy that they bring is incredible. The initiative is being supported once again by 'Your Favourite Read' the Killarney Advertiser, with Chris Davies coordinating the Killarney area, and he is appealing to locals to support this year's collection. "After being cancelled last year, the

Shoebox Appeal is back and we are calling on everyone in Killarney to get involved and support this fantastic charity," he said. "There are a number of local schools getting their pupils involved again which is fantastic but we are appealing to the whole community to get behind this year's appeal. Whether you are eight or 80-years-old, this is a small but meaningful way to spread a bit of happiness this Christmas." The Killarney Advertiser office is a designated dropoff point this year and is taking shoeboxes right up until November 8, he added. If anyone has any questions they can email Chris at sales@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

University Hospital Kerry (UHK) is restricting visitations due to a surge in COVID cases as well as a high volume of people presenting at the Emergency Department. Due to increased infection control measures, the hospital has said that it has to make some difficult decisions about visiting, in order to protect patients, their relatives and staff.

VISITING IS RESTRICTED AS FOLLOWS:

General Wards: UHK is asking the public not to visit the hospital other than in end of life situations and other exceptional circumstances [to be agreed with the ward manager and relevant consultant, in advance of visiting]. Children in particular should not visit the hospital. Maternity: Accompanying partner arrangements unchanged presently. Palliative: Visiting will be by prior agreement only, in order to protect patients and staff. The situation will be reviewed by the hospital outbreak team on an on-going basis and any changes will be advised, a statement read. "University Hospital Kerry understands that this announcement will make it difficult for many families, however the hospital’s priority is to continue to maintain the safety and well-being of patients,

members of the public and staff at the hospital." The hospital would like to remind the public that UHK has in place some alternative means of keeping contact with loved ones: Keeping Contact Initiative: UHK has set up a specific email address so that patients can receive direct messages from people thinking of them. Letters from friends and family can be of great comfort to patients during these times. Email your letter to uhk.keepingcontact@hse. ie. Be sure to include in the subject line the patient’s full name, ward name (if known) and the first line of the patient’s home address. Virtual Visits: Video call using WhatsApp (For patients who do not have SMART phone/devices). UHK have an initiative to facilitate these calls using Digipads. Please contact Ward Manager/Nurse in Charge to request a video call with your loved one. "All appropriate infection control precautions are being followed to minimise the risk of spreading infection among staff and patients."

Departing from the club’s new ‘Vintage

Are you satisfied with the Government’s latest easing of restrictions ? Government this week announced the latest in the country's reopening plans including that the remaining aspects of the hospitality, entertainment and night-time economy sector can reopen with a full range of protective measures in place. Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that "over the course of the last two weeks we have seen a worsening of the [COVID] situation" and that the number of new

infections, people requiring hospital admissions and people in ICU "have all increased", and that the "figures are a cause for concern". He said based on NPHET's recommendations the sectors due to reopen today (Friday) "may now do so" on the basis that "customers produce their proof of vaccine and identity". So we conducted an online survey and also took to the streets and asked your opinion. Here's what you had to say:

MAJA AND BOBAN BOBAN

"With the amount of cases, it would be too soon. Some of the restrictions are really confusing."

GERALDINE MURPHY

DAVID ZGLINSKI

"I think overall, I would agree with the decision. There are certain anomalies. Overall the Government is doing a great job. They're playing against the wind. It's virtually impossible to get the balance right."

"It is too soon. It makes no sense, we will be back to lockdown again."

"I think it's fine. Compared to the rest of the world we are so far back. It's up to you, if you feel safe with this yourself."

Katie celebrates 20 years in business If you enjoy what you do, sure it's not work at all - and that has been the case for Katie Hickey who has been in business locally for two decades. For the past 20 years Katie has been successfully running Sheer Beauty which is now located at 1 Hogans Lane (Hillary’s Lane). She said that it was a milestone she felt she may not reach on more than one occasion after coming through a pandemic, a recession, a re-location, and three maternity leaves. However, she said that the loyalty of her clients over the years have given her great encouragement. "Sincere thanks to my clients past and present who, without doubt, have been the reason I kept going," Katie said. Originally located in Fleming's Lane for 19

years, Katie then re-located her business to Hogan’s Lane in Norma’s Flair for Hair. "The beauty industry has evolved so drastically over the past 20 years. For me it is keeping things simple and enjoyable. Realising a client’s needs may not be the treatment itself but the time you give to them. Through the years you get to know your clients so well and some beautiful friendships have developed. I hope my clients have gained from me what I have from them. I have so many people I would like to thank and I will personally, but without doubt my husband Andrew and my family, 20 years in business would not have been achieved. She has remained loyal to the brands she has carried over the years including Lycon Waxing, Aviva Tanning, Shellac and Jessica Manicure and Pedicure. "I was also delighted to bring on board the fabulous facial range that is Killarney Organic. Killarney has been incredibly kind to me. I’m so proud to be part of such a wonderful community. If the past 19 months have proved anything for business it is together we are stronger."

The film theme is set to continue in town early next week as the second annual HER International Film Festival gets underway. Founded by local man Olámídé Ojegbenro, the festival, which will feature a mixture of both in-person and online screenings and workshops, will run from this coming Monday until next Sunday (October 25 to 31). Online events will run from the Monday to Thursday, while in-person events will run from October 29 - 31 at St Mary’s Church of Ireland, Kenmare Place. The festival includes 118 feature films, short films, feature-length and shortform documentaries, animations, music videos, scripts, screenplays and student films from 52 countries.

HER is an entirely youth-led film festival whose creative and decision making team is made up of young people aged 24 and below. Despite the challenging conditions we have all faced over the last 12 months the festival has received a vast and inspiring array of submissions this year, Olámídé explained. “I believe that creating a platform such as Her International Film Festival to showcase the work of young women in film, television, and animation is critical to achieving gender balance in the film industry, which is why my team and I focused on the next generation of female filmmakers to give them a voice that their works cherish and loved by festivals like ours.” For more see www.herintlfilmfestival.com.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

The tax you’re really paying for your health With the budget just squared away, there’s always an air of “how did I do out of it?”

because our families will say “good for you”, because they know we need it, or they’ll say “you don’t need that …” and lie. Or they’ll roll their eyes because they know we’ve failed before. When we’ve been away from the gym for four months, we don’t want to do that first workout because we’re going to be last. It’s going to suck and we might get embarrassed.

In Ireland, we enjoy a public healthcare system which is touted to become a universal healthcare system. Maybe “enjoy” is the wrong word. We have it, and we use it, and, of course we pay for it. We justify the constant ratcheting-up of our tax burden to pay for rising health-care costs. That tax is on our wallets. We also pay another type of tax: When we’re unhealthy, we don’t get to do the things we like. When we’re overweight, we don’t always say “YES!” when our kids ask to go to the swimming pool. When we’re unfit, we don’t take our buddy’s invitation for a weekend hiking and camping trip. We can’t start jogging because our knees hurt; can’t lift weights because our back hurts; can’t cut down calories because we feel we need the energy. Those things are taxes. Physical taxes, but they’re not the worst taxes we pay. The worst tax we pay is the mental tax. When we’re self-conscious about our fitness or health, we don’t want to start exercising. We don’t want to look dumb or fail. We don’t want to start a new lifestyle

The Government makes us pay financial tax, but the other two - physical and mental - are self-imposed. No one cares if you’re slow. No one cares if you finish last. No one cares if you blow your nutrition this week and have to start all over again. You’d stop caring about what others thought about you if you realised how rarely they actually do. Everyone thinks about themselves, mostly. That’s the tax they’re paying and most of us overpay. We’re taxed enough. Stop worrying about what you look like and start caring about what makes you feel good. If you’d like to start taking steps in the right direction with your health and fitness, call in for a free consultation with us at Activate. Visit www.activate.ie/ free-intro for more information.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Your rights as a tenant Question: Can a landlord or letting agency ask me for personal information like my PPS number when starting a new tenancy? ANSWER: Yes, a landlord or letting agent can ask you for certain personal information, but only at a specific point in the process of finding somewhere new to rent. You may also be asked for the following information when you rent a property: • Recent bank statements • A reference from your previous landlord • A reference from your employer • Recent payslips • Photo ID, such as a passport or driver’s licence You should only be asked for these details when you are offered the property to rent. 900-year-old sword discovered at sea Many dream of finding ancient treasure - and for one amateur diver it became a reality - after finding a 900-year-old sword at sea.

Gardai launch road safety enforcement campaign An Garda Síochána announced details of a new national road safety enforcement operation that will target driver behaviour for the remainder of 2021. Operation ‘Teorainn’ will be mounted nationwide and focus on the four Lifesaver Offences; speeding, driving whilst intoxicated, non-seatbelt wearing and mobile phones, as well as unaccompanied driving by learner drivers, plus road transport offences. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) will support Operation ‘Teorainn’ with a programme of road safety awareness campaigns. The joint road safety drive comes after a bad summer for road safety this year, particularly August which recorded the

highest number of monthly fatalities - 24 - since June 2012 (26). The number of deaths overall this year at 110 is a cause for concern, but particularly the number of driver deaths. There has been a 19% increase in the number of drivers killed (57) this year compared to the number of drivers killed (48) up to the same period in 2020. In 2021 78% of fatalities have occurred on rural roads with a speed limit of 80km/h or above which will be a particular focus of Operation ‘Teorainn’. "Every fatal or serious injury collision has a devastating impact on the family, friends and communities of the people involved," said Chief Superintendent Michael Hennebry, of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau. "Our focus for the remainder of 2021 will

be to reduce these collisions through this road safety enforcement campaign. Our roads are shared spaces, and we all have a duty of care, to ourselves and to others, to keep each and every road user safe. I am urging every road user to play their part by complying with the road traffic legislation and assist An Garda Síochána to make our roads safer places for all." With just two and a half months remaining in 2021 An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority are calling on road users, and particularly drivers, to make a greater effort to stay safe on the road. 33 people were killed in the final three months of last year. To date in 2021, a total of 111 lives have been lost on the road in 100 fatal collisions.

Shlomi Katzin, a resident of the town of Atlit in Israel, was diving near his home when he spotted the sword and other centuries-old artifacts on the sea bed off the Carmel coast. It's believed that shifting sands had made them suddenly visible. The four-foot-long sword was encrusted with shells and other remnants of sea life. Many believe that the sword once belonged to a crusader who sailed to the Holy Land almost a millennium ago. The location, a natural cove near the port city of Haifa, once served as a shelter for seafarers. “These conditions have attracted merchant ships down the ages, leaving behind rich archaeological finds,” said Koby Sharvit, director of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) marine archaeology unit. The sword will now be put on display after it has been cleaned and restored.

Shredded Banksy canvas sells for €21.9m In 2018, someone paid €1.2 million for one of Banksy’s most iconic works - a silhouetted girl reaching for a red, heart-shaped balloon as it floats away - only for it to be shredded. A secret shredder Banksy had built into the bottom of the picture frame had sliced the bottom half of the canvas. The stunt, which poked fun at the world of fine art is typical of the graffiti artist's irreverent style after his work began appearing on the streets of Bristol in south-

west England in the 1980s. The work, now called 'Love is in the Bin', had an estimated selling price of €5-7 million. After a 10-minute bidding war involving nine bidders in the saleroom, online and by phone, it sold for three times the high estimate to an undisclosed buyer for €21.9 million. The original, which first appeared on a wall in east London, has been reproduced endlessly in prints and online, and appropriated by some of the world's bestknown brands.

It had been called one of the most significant artworks of the early 21st century in the British press, before the shredded version was granted a new certificate and date by Pest Control, Banksy's authentication body, and given the new title. Alex Branczik, Sotheby's contemporary art chairman, said Banksy's stunt at its

last sale "did not so much destroy an artwork by shredding it, but instead created one". "Today, this piece is considered heir to a venerated legacy of anti-establishment art," he added, calling it "the ultimate Banksy artwork" and "a true icon of recent art history".

Tributes paid to poet who leaves a rich legacy behind Tributes have been pouring in for poet and writer Brendan Kennelly following his death Sunday.

NASA's space probe to study Jupiter's asteroids NASA has launched a groundbreaking mission to study Jupiter's Trojan asteroids, two large clusters of space rocks thought to be remnants of primordial material that formed the solar system's outer planets. The space probe, named 'Lucy' partly after The Beatles song 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' packed inside a special cargo capsule, lifted off on schedule from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Ari Vogel, Lockheed Martin's Deep Space Exploration Director, watched the launch and told NASA TV afterwards: "Incredible. Seeing it go across the clouds and brighten up the whole sky was just fantastic." NASA's chief of science missions, Thomas Zurbuchen, said: "Each one of those as-

teroids we're visiting tells our story... the story of us, the story of the solar system." The 12-year Lucy expedition will study a record eight asteroids - seven in the Trojans and an asteroid in the solar system's main asteroid belt, called DonaldJohanson. The Trojans have been described as unexplored time capsules from the dawn of the solar system, or planetary "fossils". Because they were formed some 4.5 billion years ago, they are the remnants of the primordial dust which collected together to make the planets that are recognisable today. The Trojans are among the remaining 'left-overs' that did not bond together to form the planets. They are also believed to be rich in carbon compounds and as a result may provide new insights into the origin of organic materials and life on Earth, according to NASA.

Want to work in Antarctica? Four of the most unusual job offerings in the world have just been advertised by London-based Kerry construction recruitment firm the Danny Sullivan Group. They are looking for two 360 excavator operators and a pair of articulated dump truck drivers for a six-month contract in Antarctica. The successful candidates will receive £1,500 (about €1,800) per week but it is no ordinary job which is described by

the company website as “once in a lifetime opportunity”. The four successful candidates will share a room for the duration of the contract. They will be away from home for six months with very little access to the Internet but all bed and board will be paid for by the main contractor. “If you are up for the challenge, and want to experience something completely different, please get in touch ASAP,” said their website www.dannysullivangroup.co.uk.

President Michael D. Higgins, Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley, and the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, have extended their condolences. Kennelly, one of the country's most popular poets, was a Professor of Modern Literature at Trinity College, Dublin until 2005. He passed away in Áras Mhuire Nursing Home, Listowel, at the age of 85. "As one of those who had the great fortune of enjoying the gift of friendship with Brendan Kennelly for many years, it is with great sadness that I have heard of his passing," President Michael D. Higgins said. "As a poet, Brendan Kennelly had forged a special place in the affections of the Irish people. He brought so much resonance, insight, and the revelation of the joy of intimacy to the performance of his poems and to gatherings in so many parts of Ireland. He did so with a special charm, wit, energy and passion." With more than 30 collections, he leaves a major body of work, a legacy of teaching as Professor of Modern Literature at Trinity College Dublin, and the gratitude of so many younger poets whom he encouraged with honest and helpful critical advice, he added. "Sabina and I offer our condolences to his sister Nancy, his brothers, Sean, John, Alan and Paddy, his granddaughters and the extended family as well as his wide circle of friends, all of whom treasured his presence among them, a friendship he valued."

A PROUD KERRYMAN

Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley said she was saddened to hear of his passing. "A proud Kerryman and giant of the world of literature. A wordsmith beyond compare blessed with a noble heart and infinite well of creativity. Many, many happy hours in times gone by spent with my students studying his wonderful poems. Remembering him with both gratitude and admiration. Rest in peace, Brendan.” Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, said “Brendan Kennelly was a remarkable poet and writer who produced

The late Brendan Kennelly who passed away on Sunday.

some of the most important and iconic poems which now form part of his rich legacy". "He made poetry popular and accessible, which won him such admiration nationally and internationally. Brendan was first and foremost a Ballylongford man and despite many years in Dublin, he always maintained a close link with, and a love of, his native place. Several years ago, Kerry County Council had the honour of hosting a Civic Reception for Brendan in his homeplace. I know that was one of his proudest days, surrounded by his family and neighbours.” The Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said that Brendan Kennelly was an exceptional ambassador for Kerry. “Brendan Kennelly was an exceptionally generous and kind man who always had great time for the people of his native county. He has made an enormous and enduring impact on Irish poetry, literature and culture, which is his wonderful legacy.” Funeral Mass was held at 12 noon in the Church of St Michael the Archangel, Ballylongford, on Wednesday followed by burial in Lislaughtin Cemetery, Ballylongford.

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Pruning is an easy job Most shrubs and trees are entering their dormant stage now but unfortunately gardening itself doesn't! One of the most important jobs before winter is upon us is pruning. Many of us live in exposed areas, and winter gales can really take their toll on plants. Excessive rocking in water sodden ground not only causes plants to break but it can also increase the ever growing hole in the ground which fills with water thus rotting the roots. Staking is an obvious solution, especially in the case of trees. The use of two stakes is ideal in very windy sites and in some cases putting the stakes at an angle against the prevailing winds is necessary. It is generally accepted that staking one third up the height of the main trunk of a tree is sufficient, rather than trying to stake the entire length of it. The second solution to wind damage is pruning. The less top heavy a tree is, or the less straggly a shrub is, the less likely it is to catch the full force of the wind. Many people are quite daunted by the prospect of cutting into their plants. It is an understandable fear; plants, and especially trees, can cost a lot. Pruning in general is an easy job if you follow some simple guidelines. First of all, never prune stone fruits such as any type of cherry, plum etc, until summer. This is to avoid silver leaf curl. Secondly, maple trees are also best left until they are in leaf. They produce a lot of sap which weeps from the cut, putting the plant under pressure. However, if left until late spring or summer, the sap no longer rises with such force. The main

reason for pruning is to remove dead or diseased parts of a plant. Therefore, take a look at your plant before cutting. Remove old, sick or dead wood first. Then take a look at the shape, trim it, then take a look at the middle or inside of the plant. If the stems are crossing over each other take out the ones which are not growing outwards. This should give you a goblet shape, which is particularly important for fruit and roses. An open goblet shape will encourage flowering and fruiting as well as allow air to circulate, reducing the risk of diseases, especially fungi such as botrytis, blackspot and rust. Try always to cut an inch or two above an outward facing healthy bud, slanting away, so that water is directed away from that bud, preventing rot. Most plants can be cut back by one third their size, or, if they are very overgrown, half is generally safe. If you are worried about taking too much off, do so in increments. Either take one third of the overall height off this year, and again next year, or, alternatively, prune one third of the stems back hard, and another one third next year, and so on. Finally, the tools you use should be fit for purpose. There are two types of secateurs and loppers; bypass and anvil. The bypass cutter is what I always use. It has two blades which, as the name suggests, pass by each other giving a clean, sharp cut. Anvil types have on flat edge, and these are used for dead wood.

Facilitated by counsellor and psychotherapist, Claire Lyons Forde, the free online group meetings offer a safe, supportive and confidential environment to those struggling with the loss of a loved one through cancer. Whether you want to share your own personal story or simply sit and listen to what is being discussed, the group has proven to be a huge source of support and comfort to those dealing with loss. “When a loved one dies, mourning is what we do and what people can see on the outside, but grief is what goes on in the inside," course facilitator Claire explained. "Our experience of grief is individual to each one of us and is as unique as our fingerprint. At the Recovery Haven’s bereavement support group meetings, people are offered a warm and friendly welcome in a safe and confidential space. They have a choice of sitting quietly and listening to what is being said or taking part in the chat and sharing their story and what they find helpful as they journey through their own grief. “Being in the company of others who understand the pain you are going through

Bus to Belfast scheme to stay on the road A Kerry TD has welcomed the news that the Bus to Belfast is to stay on the road. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said assurances from the Department of Health that The Northern Ireland Planned Healthcare Scheme (NI PHS), which has been in effective operation since January 1 this year, will remain in place until a new a statutory scheme is put in place. The Kerry deputy avails of this service for his constituents on a regular basis and said many were concerned that the scheme may come to an end due to Brexit. “What this will mean to so many of my constituents is that they can continue to avail of this scheme for treatments for cataract removals by travelling from Kerry by bus to Belfast so that they can get treated in a timely manner and get back to living their lives in a healthy manner," Deputy Healy-Rae said.

"I am delighted that the Government has seen the good sense to help continue this scheme and I’m delighted that the pressure of representation that I have brought to this scheme will see it continue." The scheme was first introduced to mitigate the loss of access to care from private providers in Northern Ireland under the EU Cross Border Directive, which ceased to apply as a result of Brexit. However, the Government intends to place the administrative NI PHS on a statutory basis and an extensive examination of options to inform the drafting of a General Scheme is currently underway with confirmation that the administrative scheme will remain until such time that a statutory scheme is in place. Patients also continue to have access to health services under the EU Cross Border Directive Scheme in all other remaining EU/EEA countries.

Faha to host club’s final classic event of year The Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club (KVVCCC) will host its final event of the season with a ‘Cars and Coffee’ event at the Faha Court Bar and Restaurant on Sunday. Each month, from April to October, one member of the club steps forward to put on an event in their locality. Sunday’s event is the turn of Tony Darmody who is better known locally for his roles on Listry Community Council. As well as the static display, which gets underway at 10.30am, the club is also

running an optional road-run from Faha to Tralee via Inch and Camp. “We will depart around 12.30pm and stop along the route to take in the fantastic scenery along Dingle and Tralee Bays,” explained Tony. He will field his exceptionally rare 1980 Renault 14 GTL in the event. It is the only one of its kind still on the road in Ireland. “I had one of these in the 1980s,” added Tony. “It is a trip back in time for me.” He was one of 105 drivers that participated in the club’s Kenmare Autumn Run on Saturday last, an event that raised funds for the Ronald McDonald Foundation.

IN MEMORIAM

22.10.2021 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT &1ST ANNIVERSARY TWOMEY

Precious Memories of Derek Twomey Coolgarriv, Killarney 25th Sept 1989 – 21st Oct 2020 As we lovingly remember Derek on his First Anniversary, we his family wish to express our thanks and gratitude to all those who helped us through that difficult time. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to his colleagues at the Dungeon bookshop who were the first to his aid; to the ambulance crews and emergency services who worked tirelessly to try to revive Derek; to Garda Paula and Garda Darren who attended the scene and especially to Paula for her kindness and compassion in the following weeks. We also express our thanks to Mike and Mary O’Shea and their staff for their professionalism, guidance and sensitivity when needed most; to Fr Jim Linehan for his prayers, spiritual support and the beautiful Requiem Mass and to Fr Derek O’Connell who concelebrated with him; to musicians Sharon and Anita for their exquisite music; to Pat for Derek’s moving eulogy and also to everyone who participated in the Mass in any way. We also want to extend our sincere gratitude to all those who attended Derek’s funeral in such difficult times, to all those people who stood outside the Cathedral due to covid restrictions; to those who joined via webcam from around the world; to everyone that lined the streets and the roadways en route to the Cathedral and then to Aghadoe; to those who waited for the cortege during terrible weather conditions, we were truly moved. We thank the many people who visited the house; those who made phone calls, sent text messages and left the large number of condolences on RIP.ie, we also thank those who sent Mass Cards, Perpetual Enrolments, flowers and not forgetting the many beautiful letters we received.

In loving memory of Kathleen Kelleher late of 10 St. Brendan’s Terrace, Killarney who died on the 24th of October 2006.

I often sit and think of you Der At a quite time of the day Of all the things we used to do And things we used to say. I often think of the times we shared As we were never apart All of these are locked away And kept deeply within my Heart

Memories are special They don’t fade away We think of you always Not just today. Sadly missed by your loving family.

5TH ANNIVERSARY MCCARTHY

Always loved and very sadly missed by Your loving wife Bridget Anniversary Mass Monday 25th October at 9.30am in The Church Of The Resurrection

3RD ANNIVERSARY MOYNIHAN

We want to thank family and friends who helped in any way at that time, to the four girls who worked tirelessly for those days at our home, we would have been lost without their help. We will not forget the kindness and generosity of so many, all those who brought food and refreshments and also the International Hotel for their generosity.

In loving memory of a dear mother Carmel McCarthy late of 9 Bishop Moynihan CrescentKillarney Co.Kerry, who passed away on 21st October 2016. Precious people are very few That is why there was only one of you Lord, treasure her in your garden of rest Because on earth she was one of the best.

Finally we want to thank the members of Killarney Legion and Killarney Celtic for the guard of honour they provided for Derek’s final journey to his beloved club, where chairman Fergal and Derek’s friend James spoke about his participation within the club down through the years. We were truly amazed by the number of people who all stood silently and respectfully in the pouring rain, this is a memory that will always remain with us.

In loving memory of Dermot Moynihan Tullig Cottage, Spa, Killarney died 25th October 2018 RIP

Lovingly remembered, your son James, Catriena, Kate and Evie xxx

It’s very rare that a group of boys who became best friends through football at a very young age, maintained that strong friendship into adulthood. Derek’s friends were very important to him and we thank each and every one of you for being his friend.

You rest in the arms of the angels In a place of peace and love Watching over us always From heaven up above

4TH ANNIVERSARY

Sadly missed by his parents Gerard and Mary, sister Deirdre, brother Darren, brother in law Kevin, sister in law Jamie, nephew and godson Zach, nieces Fia and Lara.

NOVENA TO ST. ANTHONY In loving memory of Tim Healy late of 24 Mangerton View, Killarney who died on 22nd October 2005. Sweet is the sleep that heals all pain We would not wake you to suffer again God took your hands, we had to part It eased your pain but broke our hearts We have no doubt that you are safe That you have moved to a brighter place And those you loved that went before Were waiting for you at heaven’s door. Sadly missed and always remembered by your wife Máiread and family.

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication.

NOVENA TO ST. JUDE (Say for 9 days) May the Sacred Heart of Jesus, be accepted in all tabernacles, until the end of time. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus, be praised and glorified, now and for ever. St. Jude pray for us, and hear our prayers. Amen. Blessed be the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Blessed be St. Jude in all the world, and for eternity, Amen. Say 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary. You will receive your intention, before the 9 days are over, no matter how impossible, it may seem. Say this prayer, 9 times a day, for 9 days. By the 8th day, your prayer will be answered. Must be published at end of Novena.

BLESSED VIRGIN Remember O Most Gracious Virgin Mary That never was it known, that anyone who fled to thy protection implored thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired y this confidence I fly to Thee O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother, to Thee I come before Thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the world incarnate, despise not my petitions but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Treasured Memories of Mary and Con Brosnan late of Currow and Killarney who died on the 25th October 2001 and 25th May, 1965. Those we love don’t go away They walk beside us every day Unseen, unheard but always near In our hearts you are always there. Sadly missed and never forgotten by your all family.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit You make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I in this short dialogue I want to thank you for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual Glory. Amen. (Say this prayer three consecutive days without stating the request, after the 3rd day the request will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your request is granted.)

To those I love and those who love me When I am gone, release me, let me go I have so many things to see and do You must not tie yourself to me with tears Be thankful for our many beautiful years. I gave to you my love you can only guess How much you gave me in happiness I thank you for the love you each have shown But now it’s time I travelled on alone. So grieve a while for me If grieve you must Then let your grief be comforted by trust It’s only for a time that we must part Bless the memories within your heart. I won’t be far away, for life goes on So if you need me, call and I will come Though you can’t see or touch me I’ll be near and if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear All my love around you soft and clear. And then, when you must come this way alone I’ll greet you with a smile and say“Welcome Home”. Sadly missed always Your son Gerard and grandson Daniel. xxx

Tommy calls it a day | By Adam Moynihan

Veteran Walsh steps away from Kerry squad after career that spanned three decades Popular Kerry senior Tommy Walsh will not be available to new team manager Jack O’Connor for the 2022 season after it was revealed on Monday that the Tralee man has retired from intercounty football. The 33-year-old appeared as a substitute in all eight of Kerry’s league and championship matches in 2021 - often as Peter Keane’s first option off the bench - despite being the oldest member of the panel. Walsh will continue to line out at club level and is expected to lead Kerin’s O’Rahilly’s in the upcoming Kerry Senior Football Championship, which gets underway at the end of this month.

SIZE

The big man came to prominence at a young age thanks to his footballing skills, his incredible size and strength, and also his pedigree: his father, Seán, starred for Kerry during the Golden Years. After shining for The Kingdom’s minor and U21 teams, Tommy graduated to

the senior ranks in 2007 and in 2008 he was named Young Footballer of the Year following Kerry’s defeat to Tyrone in the All-Ireland final. He then played a key role as Jack O’Connor’s team defeated Cork in the 2009 decider. Walsh signed for AFL side Sydney Swans shortly after he lifted Sam and he played Aussie rules for five years before returning to Ireland and the Kerry team in 2015. He stepped away from the panel again at the end of 2016 but, when Peter Keane replaced Eamonn Fitzmaurice in 2018, the Strand Road star was called up once again. Walsh was used predominantly as an impact sub throughout Keane’s reign and he made a number of key interventions during this time, perhaps most notably during the team’s memorable run to the 2019 All-Ireland final. He was an important figure in the dressing room, a point which was touched upon by Kerry GAA chairman Tim Murphy as he announced Walsh’s retirement.

“Over the past two years in particular, Tommy’s leadership on and off the field has helped to encourage, motivate, and successfully integrate many of our younger players onto the panel,” Murphy said. “On behalf of all Kerry supporters I wish to sincerely thank and acknowledge Tommy for all he has done and wish him the very best in the future.” Reacting to the news, Kerry manager Jack O’Connor also spoke highly of Walsh and his contributions to the green and gold. “It was with sadness that I learned today of Tommy Walsh’s decision to retire from the Kerry senior football panel,” O’Connor said. “I coached Tommy for two years firstly in 2008 with Kerin’s O’Rahilly’s when he was instrumental in helping the club to a county final and in 2009 with Kerry. “He gave one of the great exhibitions in the 2009 All-Ireland final against Cork when he scored four great points – two

from either foot. Like his father Seánie, he was a man for the big occasion and raised his game accordingly. “I wish him all the best in retirement, and I hope he continues to enjoy a fruitful club career for many years to come.” Tommy’s former Kerry teammate and fellow Tralee native Kieran Donaghy was among the first to congratulate him on his fine career. Speaking on Radio Kerry’s Terrace Talk, Donaghy spoke of Walsh’s leadership skills, particularly after he came home from Australia. “Tommy is a class human being. He’s very loyal, there’s no bull**** with him. He’ll tell you like it is, if you are performing or if you’re not performing. “I just thought he was pure class in the dressing room... I always felt safe in the knowledge that he was in there, helping to guide the next young crop of Kerry footballers that were coming through. I would say that if you ask any one of them, they will be missing him big-time in the dressing room next year.”

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT

The ‘league as championship’ model has its flaws but it must be passed at Congress nevertheless, writes Adam Moynihan As I was weighing up the rights and wrongs of the ongoing football championship debate, a quote by the American political columnist George Will came to mind. I have no idea who the man is if I’m being perfectly honest. The politics of Kerry football keep me busy enough without concerning myself with Capitol Hill. But I happened upon this line of his once and for some reason it stuck with me. “The pursuit of perfection often impedes improvement.” ‘Perfect’ is always the goal but sometimes ‘better’ is good enough. Plan B is certainly not perfect. Far from it. In fact, I would describe it as a pretty poorly thought-out proposal. My biggest concern is the fact that the Division 3 and 4 winners (the 17th and 25th ranked teams in the football pyramid) will participate in the All-Ireland series, while the 6th, 7th and 8th teams will not. The 12th to 16th placed teams will also be eliminated without playing a single knockout championship game. Sport is supposed to be a meritocracy. It’s hard to justify granting the 25th best team in the country a shot at the All-Ireland while the 6th best team are left behind. Frankly, it smacks of the GAA pandering to the weaker counties in a fairly condescending way. They are effectively saying, “here you go, you can still win Sam”. Before muttering, “good luck against Dublin” once they’re safely out of earshot. As I’ve said before in this column, I also don’t believe that two tiers are enough. There will still be too many mismatches between the strongest and weakest teams in the All-Ireland Championship and the strongest and weakest teams in the Tailteann Cup. But the bottom line for me as a fan and a journalist, and I truly hope it will be the bottom line for at least 60% of voters at Saturday’s Congress, is that Plan B is an improvement. It’s better than what we have currently, and it’s a lot better than the other proposal on the table.

SIMILAR LEVEL

Plan B will give teams more championship matches against opposition who are operating at a similar level as them. Kerry beating Tipperary by 15 points does nothing for the development of Kerry or Tipperary football. In order to grow, Kerry need to be playing against teams who can beat them, and Tipperary need to be playing against teams

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

Plan B isn’t perfect but it’s a step in the right direction whom they can beat. (And in order to enjoy the fare, spectators and television viewers need to see matches that are not foregone conclusions.) In the early days of the two-tier debate, some dissenting voices from the traditionally less successful teams complained that they could no longer win the Sam Maguire if they were “demoted” to a ‘B’ championship. (Which is probably why the Division 3 and Division 4 winners are getting a golden ticket to take part in the preliminary quarter-finals of the ‘A’ championship.) Leaving aside the fact that some of these teams have won exactly none of the 134 previous iterations of the tournament, this attitude is patently self-defeating. Playing in the Tailteann Cup (or, preferably, a third-tier championship) would actually greatly increase their chances of lifting Sam in the medium-to-longer term. Lining out against teams of a similar standing would allow them to put a run together, and so build momentum, and so build confidence. This is how the weak teams develop. Not by getting tanked by an All-Ireland contender on an annual basis. Who’s to say that a Division 4 team like Wicklow can’t steadily build by getting good results over a number of years, win the Tailteann Cup, and eventually find their footing at senior level? It might take a decade. It might take two or three of them. But isn’t ‘some day’ better than ‘never’? Look at a club like Kenmare Shamrocks. Ten years ago they were playing junior football but by graduating on merit through the Kerry Club Championship system, they are now a major force at senior level. Last weekend they competed in their second successive senior club final. Would they be where they are now if Kerry football wasn’t structured the way it is? I would say probably not. Success breeds success. If they were getting tarred by Dr Crokes in an “All-Kerry” championship in 2011, they’d probably still be getting tarred by Dr Crokes in 2021. They earned their right to sit at the top table, and the journey has made them what they are. Another criticism of Plan B is that it will downgrade the importance of the provincial championships. For what it’s worth, my personal response to that is fairly straightforward: good.

KERRY TEAM

As for the Kerry team, Plan B works for them too. The players are in favour of it. A poll on my personal Twitter account suggests that over 87% of Kerry supporters are in favour of it. However, the Kerry delegation heading to HQ are apparently undecided and waiting to have their arms twisted on the day. It’s a little surprising that they haven’t yet made their minds up – it’s not like there hasn’t already been enough public debate on the issue – but we must reserve judgment until they make their final call. As long as they arrive at the right decision, that’s all that matters. The ill-conceived Plan A (four provincial groups of eight plus knockout) appears to be a complete non-runner for Kerry and for most counties, which is a relief because this motion comes directly before Plan B on the agenda. If Plan A were to get the necessary 60% majority, Plan B wouldn’t even be heard.

TIDE

At the time of going to print, Cork, Tipperary, Clare, Louth, Wexford, Meath, Offaly, Kildare, Westmeath, Longford and even Down (all Ulster counties were expected to vote ‘no’) have confirmed that they will be backing Plan B. PLAYER: Seán O'Shea at the launch of the 2020 championship. The football calendar could change radically this weekend, with players generally favouring the 'league as championship' option. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

On Wednesday, GAA President Larry McCarthy and Director General Tom Ryan also threw their considerable weight behind the ‘league as championship’ model. McCarthy urged delegates to be “bold” and go for the more radical proposal. I don’t even think it takes boldness to opt for Plan B. All it takes is a little bit of common sense. After years of debate, the tide appears to have turned the right way for those who seek progress. That being said, this is the GAA. There is bound to be resistance in certain quarters - a desire to keep to the status quo. These traditionalists will point to how imperfect Plan B is, and they’re not wrong. Plan B isn’t perfect. It’s just better. Isn’t that enough?

Eamonn Fitzgerald remembers the late Jimmy O'Brien, the eminently popular bar owner, singer and GAA fan who left an indelible mark on the town of Killarney TWO GREATS: The late Jimmy O'Brien (right) with Kerry football legend Mick O'Connell. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.

22.10.2021

Publican Jimmy O’Brien was laid to rest at sunny Aghadoe on Monday last. He wouldn’t want any fuss, but he got his promise from his lifelong friend, Jimmy Doyle. Jimmy was on the button accordion playing ‘Mary from Bonane’, a firm favourite, and even more so in recent weeks when Bonane native Seán O’Shea was kicking points from all angles. After his love for his family, nothing meant more to Jimmy O’Brien than football, music and song. Born in the town land of Lyreatough, Kilcummin in 1932, he attended the local Anabla NS and was well inducted in the various stages of getting the turf from sleán to the reek in the haggard. He was of the bog and proud of it. But he

x

knew it was very hard work and headed for town, specifically Culloty’s Garage at Fair Hill (now Killarney Hardware). There he learned his trade as a mechanic. He didn’t boast about it but was very proud of the papers he received to certify him as fully qualified. Like so many more people of that time, he was taken to America by Patrick Cronin in 1956 and was home for good in 1961. He must have collected a fair fistful of dollars and held on to them because, when Conno Healy’s pub came up for sale in 1959 (across the road from Culloty’s), he bought it. He returned home to open up Jimmy O’Brien’s pub along with his wife, Mary.

22.10.2021 The family came along in due course Siobhán, Ann and Jim - and the business grew. All went well until September 29, 1994, when his beloved Mary passed away aged 61. Too young to die and it hit him hard. No wonder; wasn’t she his life and soul? His three children, the bar and his twin loves of football and song kept him going. He had no time for soccer, recounting times he would go up to the Friary, say the rosary, and still no score when he returned. He was an ardent supporter of the Kerry football teams, but even more passionate about club football. Which was his club? Set the scene in the Fair Hill bar, with a nice crowd inside. That’s the way he liked it - he got a bit flustered if it became jam-packed. It’s summer time and the O’Donoghue Cup draw has been published. Johnny Batt (Cronin) was the instigator, and his Spa club mates the Herlihy brothers (Dave and William) stirred it further. Who was Jimmy going to support in the forthcoming matches, in which the rivalry would be intense? Mick Gleeson was as philosophical as ever; he knew better than to try and win this one. The McCarthy brothers from Gneeveguilla, Thado, Joe and Billy, were in fast to lay claim to the boss of the house. After all, wasn’t he reared in the traditions of Sliabh Luachra and one of its finest sean-nós singers? Rosy was far more definite. Gneeveguilla, of course, I have to say. Kilcummin’s Dermot Moynihan was in no doubt about how the allegiance would stand. After all, Jimmy was born in the parish, went to school in the parish and the parish rule was, and still is, sacrosanct in Kerry football. The odds favoured the country clubs and were stacked against the townies. Weeshie Fogarty was a regular and he had lined Jimmy up for Terrace Talk. His daughter, Ann, married Harry O’Neill (Dr Crokes), Tom Long was his gun club friend traipsing around Cock Hill and not a word out of him, but beside him supping porter and watching the scene develop was Mike Cooper, the man who was born just inside

the county bounds and was now living in Killarney. The Crokes are the team, said Mike, his chest swelling with pride. He had just returned from Cahersiveen where Dr Crokes had defied the odds to beat the Maurice Fitzgerald-led South Kerry team in the Kerry County Championship. Five of his sons played the full match to secure victory. But I thought there were only four? “No, I have 5, all good, but the youngest is only a slip of a lad. You’d think you’d blow him over, but the foxy boy will be the best of all of them.” How right he was. The boy became a man and won five All-Irelands with Kerry. Crokes went on to win the 2000 Kerry SFC, managed by Harry O’Neill, Jimmy’s son-in-law. How was the proprietor going to get out of this one before the gallery of rogues? Sure, he was the greatest rogue of all himself, but we loved him for it. Everyone looked to Jimmy for an answer, but he turned to another regular, the independent voice of Bracker, from the Rock.

ern Hotel. Business over, they trooped down to O’Brien’s. The pint was much cheaper there and they would have a right session singing, and what are you having yourself, sir? Dolly McMahon, The Wolfe Tones, and the Begley’s all came to sing and play. There were so many impromptu sessions and you’d get the discreet phone call that the session had already started. “Come, you’ll enjoy it, but ná h-abair focal to anyone.” What an invitation to listen to musical greats from the list above. “Johnny O’Leary and the Doyles will be here around 10. We have Seán Ó Sé (Poc ar Buile), Johnny Lehane and Diarmaidín Ó Súillabháin will be here from Cúl Aodh. He’ll have the recorder for Radio na Gaeltachta.” Regular visitors were Mick O’Connell, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Donncha Ó Dulaing and Cíarán Mac Mathúna. Thankfully, Ciarán recorded so many of Jimmy’s songs, preserving this priceless legacy for the Irish oral tradition.

Jimmy had the knack of not falling out with anyone, so he carried confirmation of club allegiance with him to his grave. Plenty of grimacing and carry on, but no answer to Johnny Batt’s question. Jimmy O’Brien had the knack of not falling out with anyone and he couldn’t win this one, so he carried confirmation of club allegiance with him to his grave. I’m pretty sure it is Gneeveguilla, in the heart of Sliabh Luachra, which made Jimmy O’Brien a household name in traditional music, especially with his lifelong ‘brother’ Jimmy Doyle. He embraced the greatness of Julia Clifford, Denis Murphy, Johnny O’Leary, the Doyle brothers and many more. What’s more, he enhanced that marvellous tradition, not in playing, but in singing. I asked Jimmy Doyle at the graveside about Jimmy on the melodeon. “Oh, he could play… But he was only alright! But for singing he was tops, pure and just outstanding. He could interpret a song so well. You wouldn’t hear a pin drop when he sang unaccompanied.” Is it any wonder that his pub in Fair Hill was a mecca for traditional singers and musicians? They came to the master’s pub for a session. Paddy Moloney, chief of The Chieftains, was a regular caller; as were The Dubliners; and the Kelly brothers, Luke of ‘Raglan Road’ and Paddy, who was also a beautiful singer. When Paddy was head of the Trade Unions, they held their conferences in Killarney’s Great South-

And then there were the American tourists drawn to a real Irish pub. They wanted ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘Galway Bay’. They also wanted to know what music college from which the vintner graduated. The prime boys from UCC provided him with the answer for the Yanks' question. The University of Sliabh Luachra, with its constituent college in Lyreatough. “Wow, fancy that. Must Google that when we get back to the States.” My friendship with Jimmy O’Brien goes back a long ways, but specifically to November 1969, when East Kerry won the second of their Kerry SFC titles and the Bishop Moynihan Cup had pride of place. He introduced me to so many people, including Con Houlihan, sitting in the high seat inside the door, hair well down his back, no pigtail and his hand cupped to his nose. This genius of a wordsmith was a shy man that I met many times later in Dublin. Just like Paddy Moloney, Jimmy shared his talents with so many young up and coming singers who went on to great things in life. I recall one such case. A very young nervous girl was preparing for her first time on stage, a recitation in Scór. Would he help her out? Would he what? Bring her along. To this day the now adult woman recalls sitting up on that seat inside the door and this

gentle, loving man encouraging her with great tips. That seat is long gone, but not the bar stand. He splashed out on a magnificent mahogany piece, surplus to the requirements of the Great Southern. “That’s not like you,” says Johnny Batt. “What’ll you use it for?” “It’ll be a fine bar counter,” Jimmy replied. “And what’s more, when its job is done, won’t it make a fine coffin?” He was a great Friary man and the highlight of St Patrick’s Day was the singing of the Ár nAthair. Father and daughter, Jimmy and Siobhán, the All-Ireland champion singer unaccompanied in touching harmony. Flawless. Enchanting. His relationship with his son Jim was more like that of brothers, looking after each other. They got great joy out of travelling to matches in the ageless red Mercedes, certainly the only one in Killarney, if not in Europe. He never got a parking ticket and definitely was never caught for speeding. I’m convinced that the former mechanic set cruise control at 40km and away she went with co-pilot Jim Bob. No need for GPS, Jim Bob in control. God help the poor motorist trying to pass out on the rural roads. July was his favourite month to live his passions. The Munster final in Killarney on the first Sunday of July was the occasion to meet so many of his friends from afar. It was also the first day of the Willie Clancy festival at Miltown–Malbay and that ran for a week. He never missed it, linking up with Galway hurlers Joe McDonagh and the Connolly brothers and especially their aunts and uncles, the Jimmy O’Brien cultivators of traditional singing and music in Connemara. It was his spiritual retreat. Sustenance for another year. His nephew, Fr Liam O’Brien, celebrated the touching funeral mass, enhanced by the singing of Maura Reen. I had the good fortune to spend an hour with Jimmy less than a fortnight before he died. He wanted to know the inside story on Jack O’Connor’s return and then sang ‘The Boys of Bárr na Sráide’ and Garry McMahon’s ‘Kerry’s Green and Gold’. Pitch perfect. Word perfect. Never a faltering note. “Not bad for an ould fella,” were his parting words. He knew he could still do it and I was so happy to video live the Master of Songs, treasured recordings for the memory bank. I wonder if St Peter will listen in on the hop balls between new neighbours, Johnny Batt and Jimmy O’Brien? To Siobhán, Ann, Jim and extended families, as well as friends from far and near, comhbhrón ó chroí. Traditional cultural Ireland has lost some great people in recent weeks: Tony Loughnane, Paddy Moloney, Máire Mac an tSaoí, Brendan Kennelly and Jimmy O’Brien. Class acts. And Jimmy, go gcloisfidh tú na h-aingil ag déanamh ceoil leat ar Neamh.

SCOTTS LAKERS

Scotts Lakers coach hails main sponsors for support As the 2021/22 National League season finally gets up and running, Adam Moynihan speaks to Lakers head coach Jarlath Lee about the new season, his new signings, and the team’s main sponsors: Scotts Hotel, Killarney Credit Union and the Killarney Advertiser. Adam Moynihan: Jarlath, you must be delighted to get up and running. Jarlath Lee: It was about time! No, there’s a good vibe around the team at the moment. We’re all happy and excited to be playing. Unfortunately the juveniles aren’t back yet, but the seniors are quite happy.

How is your rotation coming together? It’s getting there. Football is an issue. Mark O’Shea (Dr Crokes) has been back with us the last week and a half or so. He trains with us but he hasn’t been able to play matches. The Gneeveguilla boys are only back this week because they were concentrating on the football. It has been hard to get a proper rotation set just yet. You’re two games into the season now. Have you learned much about your team and the competition in the opening few weeks? It’s all about learning. We’re always learning and we’re slowly getting our unity together. I would have liked that to have happened a bit quicker but I do reckon we will be challenging. We will be in the top four regardless. Ben is the best point guard in the league without a shadow of

a doubt, and Emilian is one of the best scorers in the league without a shadow of a doubt. The young guys just need to build their confidence up and when that happens, it’s going to be good. It’s going to be exciting. For the people that will be coming to the home games, I just want to encourage them to be loud. We need an atmosphere there. Encourage the young guys on the court. Are those young players enjoying being involved with a National League team? They’re loving it. They’re all getting a couple of minutes. Senan O’Leary and Jamie O’Sullivan are starting at the moment, so they’re getting their chance. Senan’s confidence is getting better bit by bit. He’s averaging eight points a game. Jamie has been consistent all the way through. And we’ve got even younger players than those two. Jack O’Sullivan is an awesome

player. He’s only 16 but he’s way above the rim already. And Luke Crowley as well. You’ll see them all over the course of the season. The Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre is tied up until the end of the month so Saturday’s game against Portlaoise will be played in Castleisland. Is that going to affect the team? The young players would have played there before but the new guys, Ben Miller, Emilian Grudov and Rui Saravia, haven’t. Will it affect them? No, it shouldn’t. They’re professionals to a certain extent. We’re looking forward to it because we threw away the Limerick game. It was just bad decisions at the end of the game that cost us. We had it won at half-time. And last week (against Fr Mathews), we just didn’t perform on the offensive end. You don’t go from scoring over 100 points the

there, talking to the young guys, which is brilliant. It’s great to have him back. And your own son, Jordan, is involved in a coaching capacity. What is he bringing to the table?

They’re loving Killarney anyway. They really like it. Ben came back, he wanted to commit to a full year which was great. He knew the team already from last year. Emilian is very young but he’s a phenomenal scorer. In pre-season he scored 26 against Neptune and 31 or 32 against Killorglin, two Super League teams. The new guy, Rui, is a 10 (points) and 10 (rebounds) guy. He’s more of a defensive player. And Dainius Varanauskas, the old dog, is back with the team.

Jordan’s first love is basketball and he loves being around the game. His main thing is strength and conditioning so he has done individual workout programmes for the players. He also brings the team down to the lake for recovery sessions and does yoga sessions. He brings a different sort of approach.

How’s Dainius getting on?

Without the sponsors, it doesn’t happen. It’s great that Scotts and Maurice O’Donoghue are with us as sponsors and hopefully they’ll continue to support us going forward. Even going back to Mau-

rice O’Donoghue Sr and the Gleneagle Hotel, the O’Donoghues have given the club great support. Margaret loves basketball, she’ll be at all the games. The whole family loves basketball. Their kids and their nieces and nephews are all involved. And we have other new sponsors involved too. O’Sullivan Bike Hire have provided bikes to the players to get around town. It’s fantastic to have them all on board. Lakers fans can now buy their season tickets with a ‘single’ costing €50. A ‘patron’ option (two adults) is available for €100, which include a mention in the gameday programmes. The ‘family’ season ticket (two adults and two under 16s) is €120. This entitles fans to entry to every home league and cup game. Visit the St Paul’s Killarney Facebook page for details on how you can get your hands on these tickets through Eventbrite. Alternatively, you can contact any club officer.

CALL-UP: Mikie Galvin |

Galvin fills in for neighbour Breen

Aghadoe co-driver Mikie Galvin described his late call up to contest last Sunday’s Wexford Rally as “two dreams come true”. World Championship star Craig Breen entered the rally at the last minute, driving his father Ray’s Subaru Legacy. Due to the unavailability of Paul Nagle, the opportunity to co-drive fell to his Aghadoe neighbour. “I got a call at 7.40am on Friday, I had five seconds to make up my mind,” said Galvin. “It was two dreams come true, to co-drive for Craig and to sit in such a legendary car.” The pair won the Historic section of the rally. Galvin is contesting next weekend’s Cambrian Rally in Wales alongside Keith Cronin. Muckross man Noel O’Sullivan and his driver Osian Pryce lead the BRC and the Cambrian Rally is the penultimate round. |

Ring debuts Legacy in Wexford

The Wexford Rally was also notable for the debut of Alan Ring’s Legacy. The exAri Vatanen car underwent a full nut and bolt restoration at the Prodrive Legend factory in England. Ring finished second in the historic rally, behind Breen. His next two events in the car are the Kerry Winter and the Killarney Historic Rally in November. |

Buckley’s Podium

London-based local co-driver Shane Buckley guided Daniel Cronin to third overall on the Wexford Rally in their Ford Fiesta. It was a short rally for Killarney tyre dealer Con Lucey and his debutant co-driver Lee Guerin. Their Ford Escort suffered gearbox problems on the opening stage and they were forced to retire. Guerin is the grandson of former Killarney and District Motor Club chairman John Guerin.

Great comeback by the team after being 2-0 down early in the game.

MEK Galaxy U12 DIVISION 1 SOUTH: Mastergeeha 2 MEK Galaxy 3. MEK took the lead on 8 minutes, when Jamie Murphy tucked away a penalty following a foul on Harry O’Mahony. Eoin Casey doubled the visitors lead 5 minutes later with a neat finish. In the 25th minute the hosts pulled a goal back, somewhat against the run of play it could be said. That's the way it stayed until the half time break, 1-2 to Galaxy. MEK pressed on, immediately from the second half whistle, but were unlucky with some early efforts

on goal. With 35 minutes on the clock the home side levelled proceedings at 2-2. This however only seemed to strike the visiting players in to life, as MEK laid siege on the Mastergeeha goal. Donnacha Vaughan went close crashing a powerful header against the post. On 42 minutes Jamie Murphy got his second of day, to make it 2-3 Galaxy. There was to be no further goals despite plenty late chances for the boys in orange. MEK left Kilbrean Park with the 3 points tucked in the bag, to make it back to back league wins for these galant men. U12 DIVISION 2: MEK Galaxy White 3 CastleIsland B 1. A well-deserved win for MEK on the day following a superb team effort.
