Let’s Broaden Our Horizons IT’S been a talking point since we opened up the debate over the past two weeks to explore the potential of the former Pretty Polly site. Kerry County Council will soon be seeking expressions of interest in relation to future use of the landmark site and our two suggestions – a financial services hub or trade fair centre – certainly got people thinking. Killarney’s first citizen, Councillor Niall Kelleher, agreed that the former Pretty Polly factory could be used in many ways. He is keen to see the site provide much-needed office space for technology companies – particularly those relating to tourism and booking engines – as well as financial technology companies. “There should be a targeted ap-
proach to have these companies based in tourism areas like Killarney,” Cllr Kelleher told Killarney Advertiser. “The tourism industry is strong here and companies can learn from people who work every day in tourism in Killarney. All these ideas come from people who work in systems and processes. “But we don’t have the space for such offices in Killarney. There is plenty of retail space but no office space, so this is what we need to develop.” The former Pretty Polly site would also be ideal for light manufacturing, he added. “There is a lot of potential there but we need to broaden our horizons and we need to develop it,” he said. “Pretty Polly is a big site suited to a lot of different enterprises but it is not suitable
Questions We Need To Ask
for anything the way it is. “About a year and a half ago I said it would be better off growing grass than left in the state it is.” Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Paul O’Neill added: “In terms of ideas, many things could work, but there would have to be a strong business case before anything is undertaken,”. Kerry County Councillor John Joe Culloty of the Killarney Municipal District noted that there are “many avenues” that could be explored for its future use. “I know people that would be interested in it as it stands right now,” he added, noting that any expansion or development would also boost employment.
Time To Get On Our Marks For Microtrack ATHLETES will be descending on Killarney from across the globe for the Killarney 10-mile road race tomorrow, Saturday, at 9am. The race, now in its fourth year, is a key element of a fundraising drive now underway to support the development of a 200m microtrack and a floodlit all-weather pitch area which will be situated on grounds leased from the St Brendan’s Trust (St Brendan’s College Killarney). Let’s throw our weight behind this project, which signifies a vital addition to
our town’s amenities and will benefit all ages. Competitors, from across Ireland, the United Sates, Canada, the UK and Chile, will be gathering at 8.45am from Ballydowney roundabout and the race starts at 9am sharp. The route will cover New Road and Aghadoe, crossing at the Golden Nugget, continuing along the cycle path to the cottage in Knockreer and then down the River Walk past the cottage cross and then up the Bishop’s Path to the finish line at St Brendan’s College. The prizegiving takes place at 11am.
KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL is to progress the former Pretty Polly site this year and expressions of interest are soon to be sought in the site. • Who is being targeted – developers, retailers? • Does the town have a say? • What is the set of criteria for the development of the site? • Will it be determined by the highest bidder? • If so, will what is best for the town be taken into account?
Ideal Location For Industry Accessibility And Infrastructure Killarney is just an hour from Cork Airport, an hour and a half’s drive from Shannon Airport and just fifteen minutes from Kerry Airport. We also have a good rail network. Accommodation Property prices are less expensive than those in Dublin and London.

Town Talk EXCLUSIVE
DON’T LET Christmas In Killarney Be Cancelled The chairperson of Christmas in Killarney, Kate O’Leary, is making an impassioned plea to the community to ensure the festival’s future. Eve Kelliher reports AN APPEAL is being made to ensure the future of the Christmas in Killarney festival, Killarney Advertiser can exclusively reveal. Matters are in “dire straits” in the words of Kate O’Leary, chairperson of the Christmas in Killarney committee. Kate made an impassioned plea for support for the festival at a Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce business networking lunch on Wednesday. “If we manage to get the same amount of local sponsorship this year that we got last year, the only thing that we will be able to do is hang lights over the town; there will be no big parade, no parade every Saturday,” she told Killarney Advertiser. “We are in a dire situation.” Committee members devoted in excess of 60 hours last year to trying to secure sponsorship, said Kate. She is appealing to businesses, schools and families to get behind Christmas in Killarney. “It is a month-long festival and it definitely has the biggest crowd-drawing power of any of our festivals,” she said. “To even contemplate Christ-
mas in Killarney without the Christmas in Killarney festival is unbearable, it’s unthinkable.” So what can be done? “At worst we need to raise €30,000 just to cover expenses that have rolled over from year to year,” said Kate. “At best we need to raise €90,000.” The value of the festival and the return on investment in it must be “weighed up” against other sponsorship demands, she added. “You’re talking 7,000 people out on the streets on the night of the big parade and up to 4,000 people on the nights of the other parades,” she said. Kate added: “The bottom line is we have to hold on to the festival. We have volunteers willing to do the work but we can’t magic up the money.” To help support the event, you can contact 087-2446131. • Check out our website and Facebook page on Tuesday when we will broadcast an interview with Christmas in Killarney chairperson Kate O’Leary on the importance of the A scene from a Christmas in Killarney Magic parade. BRENDAN GRACE and Killarney Courthouse will be two of the stars in a new film to be shot in town next month. Killarney-based writer and director Damian O’Callaghan of Kerry film company OC Productions is seeking cast and crew members for the courtroom drama, with auditions being held this Sunday, September 24, at 10am in the Killarney Plaza Hotel. The Department of Education and Skills is seeking expressions of interest from schools to participate in a trial of this new framework. The framework is one of the key supports envisaged under the Digital Strategy for Schools 2015-2020.

That’s Entertainment!
WELL, it seems that Jake Carter was the man of the moment during the week. As well as receiving a welcome and a cuppa in our Chatroom at Killarney Advertiser last Friday, the 18-year-old singer was given a standing ovation at Killarney Community College where he paid the students a surprise visit. “It was a very unique opportunity to have a hugely popular live artist perform to our students,” said school PRO Kerri McCarthy.
“Our music teacher, Ms Joanna Hughes, received the call and was delighted that Killarney Community College was chosen to host the event.” The younger brother of chart-topping artist Nathan Carter, Jake has often performed at his brother’s gigs and festivals and has been a great hit with the fans. He will take centre stage in the INEC Acoustic Club on Saturday, September 23.
THE North American Grappling Championship NAGA came to Ireland last weekend and Straight Blast Gym (SBG) Killarney was well represented. Nine SBG Killarney members, together with representatives from over 20 countries, battled it out in Dublin for the coveted NAGA Championship belt. The team of fighters competed at all levels from beginner to expert. The return for their hard work and eight weeks’ prepa-
ration was impressive – one bronze, nine silver, two gold medals and one NAGA Championship belt in expert division. The club is growing and has a new 10-week beginner’s programme in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu starting on Monday, September 25, from 7pm to 9pm. The club is located opposite TK Maxx on Main Street. “The coaches invite anyone who is interested to come along to the first night for a free introduction class,” said Mark O’Brien of the club.

What A Game! Opinion: Aishling O’Hanlon
WE ALL knew it was going to a cracker of a match when Dublin and Mayo met each other in Croke Park last Sunday for the All-Ireland final, but oh my, it was a truly nerve-wracking game. From the moment the whistle blew, my mind was completely tuned in to the television and the radio. I’m one of those people who watch the television on mute and have the radio on in the background for the commentary, by the way. It’s something I picked up from my grandfather when I was younger. He was a Kerry GAA fanatic and would always have the house in total silence when a football match was on. Now for my shocking revelation. While all the other 31 counties, including Kerry, were shouting for Mayo, I was supporting Dublin, and I got quite the amount of grief for it
from family and friends. You see, I have family in Mayo so you’d think I’d be supporting them but I’ve always been a secret admirer of “The Dubs”. I think they’re an amazing team and even though Mayo deserved to win on the day, as they were the better team in my opinion, I was delighted to see Stephen Cluxton lifting the Sam Maguire and Dublin winning the three-in-arow after such a long period of time. Now before anyone thinks I’m a turncoat, I’m 100% Kerry and you’ll never catch me wearing another county jersey, just to clarify any confusion. I’d also like to say a massive congratulations to our Kerry minors on winning the four-in-a-row, here’s hoping to the five-in-a-row next year and the Kerry seniors bringing home Sam Maguire to his rightful home. Ciarrai Abu!

A Successful TD on Way to INEC
BASED on The Letters of A Successful TD and An Irish Minister of State by John B Keane and adapted by the director Michael Scott and cast Jon Kenny and Mary McEvoy, A Successful TD makes its debut in the INEC Killarney Saturday, November 18. The Successful TD follows the trials, tribulations, misadventures and hilarious antics of Till McAdoo as he seeks re-election to the Dáil in the “October Elections”. Tull has roped in the help of his faithful daughter Kate while his wife nurses her various ailments in bed or in Lisdoonvarna, but his archenemy Flannery the local schoolteacher plans to scupper the election for Tull… Written by John B Keane in 1967 he displays his edge for humour and satire that are uncomfortably close to the politics of today. Peppered with Keane’s gallery of madcap characters this show will have you laughing at politics (in a good way) from the start. One half of the famous comic duo d’Unbelievables Jon Kenny has been threading the boards for decades. Since 2014 he has been playing the title role in John B Keane’s The Matchmaker, Bull McCabe in The Field for which he received rave reviews and also in Sive. In 2014 he played in She Stoops to Conquer at the Abbey Theatre. Recognized by television viewers for having played the role of Biddy Byrne in Glenroe from 1983-2000 Mary McEvoy has had a very successful career in

PROTECT Your Family
Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Qualified Financial Adviser, Philip Sicat, Premier Financial Services, discusses ways to protect your family through Life Insurance Protection Plans.
AN EASY GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE - and what you need . . . To help you get to grips with the different types of Life Insurance, we’ve split them into three types.
1.
LIFE INSURANCE - Protect Your Family • This pays your family a lump sum if you die within a certain period of time. • The lump sum aims to provide you with a replacement income for your family if you die before your cover ends. • It does not cover you for your whole life and this is why it’s cheaper than whole-of-life insurance.
2. SPECIFIED ILLNESS - Gives your family a lump
sum if you suffer from a specified illness This type of cover pays you a lump sum if you suffer one of the specified illnesses covered on your plan. This lump sum aims to help you and your family maintain your standard of living and help you to recover without additional financial worries.
3. PROTECT YOUR INCOME ON ILLNESS
This cover provides you with a replacement income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury after a period of time. This money could be used to help your family pay your mortgage/ rent and essential bills. It does not cover you if you become unemployed.

Each individual’s circumstances will determine which type of protection option meets their needs, but whichever route you chose, all it’s really about is putting life cover in place to ensure that the necessary funds will end up in the right hands at the right time, in both a cost efficient and a tax efficient manner. We advise that you seek professional advice as the information given is a guideline only and does not take into account your particular circumstances.

BUYING OR SELLING
A PROPERTY Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,
Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues Buying or selling a property can be a very daunting experience and can be a very stressful time in someone’s life. This is particularly the case if you are selling your own principal residence. Prior to selling a property, there are a number of practical matters which you can have arranged and put in place prior to agreeing a sale. Firstly you can arrange to have a Building Energy Rating Certificate or BER Certificate completed by a registered assessor. This assesses the energy rating of your dwelling and is a statutory requirement for all sales and leases. Evidence of the discharge or exemption of the Local Property Tax or LPT will also be required for a sale. A printout showing the LPT for each property can be printed on line and can form part of the sale documents. A Certificate of Discharge of Exemption of Non-Principal Private Residence Charge or NPPR will also be required for a sale of a dwelling. This charge relates to the second property charge of €200 per annum which became applicable in the year 2009 and ended in 2013 with the introduction of the Local Property Tax. In the event that you are selling your principal residence that was your principal residence in those years, an exemption can be applied for from the Local Authori-
ty. Evidence of Proof of ownership during that period will be required which can include the utility bill for each year i.e. 2009, 2013 and a Statutory Declaration will have to be completed. If the property was not your principal residence during this period and the charge has been paid, a Certificate of Discharge can be obtained from the Local Authority. In the event that the charge has not been paid, significant penalties arise and you should consult with your solicitor for further advices. If the property you are selling is serviced by a septic tank or similar treatment unit, this should be registered and can be done online and can be completed by completing the requisite form and discharging the fee of €50.00. In the event that the property has a mortgage registered it is likely that the bundle of title documents are held by a lending institution and these can be obtained by contacting your solicitor who can obtain same in trust pending the completion of the sale. The above views are an outline of practical matters that can be put in place in advance of agreeing the sale of your dwelling. An early appointment with your solicitor can be beneficial in ensuring that the sale process completes in a timely manner.

Led by captain fantastic David Clifford of Fossa, who notched a spectacular four goals and four points in Croke Park on Sunday, the players and manager, Peter Keane, received thunderous applause along the streets of Killarney and into Fitzgerald Stadium.

Boost For Young Pupils CHILDREN at Maggie’s Montessori Preschool were delighted to hear that the preschool received Early Years Capital funding. This funding will help enhance to preschool’s outdoor playground. “This addition involved a twin playhouse, balance beam, zip

From there it was on to the captain’s home club, Fossa, where bonfires blazed for a homecoming. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Tributes to ‘Memory Man’ Jimmy Magee TRIBUTES flowed following the passing of veteran broadcaster Jimmy Magee this week. Born in New York and raised in Co Louth, he joined RTÉ in 1956 and in his time as a broadcaster, commentated on 10 Olympic Games and 11 World Cups. Known as the “memory man”, Magee began his career in broadcasting as a reporter for the RTÉ Radio programme “Junior Sports Magazine”. He commentated on a wide range of sports for RTÉ, including every Olympic Games from 1972 until 2012, and he covered his first World Cup for radio in 1966 which was won by the host nation England. Magee also commented on Katie Taylor’s historic gold medal victory at the London 2012 Olym-
pic games for RTÉ. At the same London Olympics in London, the International Olympic Committee acknowledged Magee’s outstanding contribution to sport and presented him with a replica of the Olympic torch. In 2006 Magee was presented with a PPI Outstanding Achievement Award to mark his 50th year in broadcasting. RTÉ Head of Sport Ryle Nugent said: “I think he was the soundtrack to many generations that included Michael O’Hehir, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Fred Cogley and himself, they were the original commentators and the ones we looked to when there was a major sporting event.”
Kerry Student Drives Centre Stage AN INNOVATIVE Kerry teen has won a coveted national award. Killorglin Community College student Jack Nagle invented a device that automatically engages the handbrake in a tractor when the operator leaves the seat. Jack was yesterday presented with the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena People’s choice Award for this Tractor Safe Lock, at the National Ploughing Championships. The 16-year-old, who recently opened the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and
Harvest Show in Fossa, has already won several other accolades for his invention and was one of 69 companies exhibiting at the Ploughing Championships. In January he made his mark at the Young Scientists Exhibition with his life-saving device. The People’s Choice Award is voted for by the general public via the Irish Farmers Journal website and app. The number of votes received totalled 3,000 with Tractor Safe Lock receiving over two-thirds (67%) of the overall vote.
Ibrahim Halawa Gets New Irish Passport Ahead Of Release THERE was joy for Ibrahim Halawa and his family on this week. The Department of Foreign Affairs has issued a new passport for Mr Halawa in anticipation of his imminent return to Ireland after four years in jail in Egypt. Members of Mr Halawa’s family met department officials in Dublin yesterday to discuss the arrangements in place for returning him to Ireland once he is released.
This is unlikely to take place until next week because the Egyptian prison authorities have not yet provided Irish diplomats in Cairo with the necessary papers to process his release and return home. Reports that the Government jet could be pressed into service to bring Mr Halawa home were dismissed as “kite-flying” by informed sources, according to the Irish Times.
Trump Corner
President Trump ‘Invents’ African Country “NAMBIA’S health system is increasingly self-sufficient,” said US President Donald Trump at a lunch with African leaders in New York on Wednesday, as he cited a list of their nations’ achievements. Only problem? No such country exists. Could the US leader have been referring to Namibia? Zambia? Or perhaps, The Gambia? Social media users weren’t backward in coming forward to

offer their own explanations. Some Twitter users bristled at President Trump’s comments about Africa’s “tremendous business potential”. “I have so many friends going to your countries trying to get rich. I congratulate you, they’re spending a lot of money,” Mr Trump said. “It [represents] huge amounts of different markets... It’s really become a place they have to go, that they want to go.” But others defended Mr Trump, saying that aside from the “Nambia” blunder, he made some valid points.
Chewbacca Socks Nearly Break The Internet WHEN world leader Justin Trudeau was snapped wearing Chewbacca socks the Internet just couldn’t handle it. Canada’s leader is regarded as one of the world’s hottest politicians and it cannot be argued, he boasts one seriously impressive sock wardrobe. This week, during the United Nations General Assembly, Trudeau rocked socks featuring the “Star Wars” Wookie. He was pictured wearing the socks at the Bloomberg Global
Business Forum, chatting alongside Christine Lagarde, managing director of the IMF, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and the CEOs of Blackrock and Blackstone. He also wore them during a discussion with Melinda Gates at Goalkeepers 2017. Unsurprisingly Twitter went into meltdown about the sartorial statement.
Kerry Punter Misses Out On €250K A SCARY lesson to us all – be sure to check that lotto ticket crumpled in your wallet! A Lotto player in Kerry had a quick turn around in luck after missing a deadline to claim a €250,000 prize. The winning ticket for the Lotto Plus 2 was sold in Supervalu on Railway Road in Kenmare three months ago. However, nobody came forward to collect their win-
nings - despite the National Lottery issuing a number of pleas. Ticket holders have just 90 days to claim their prize.

In The News. . . Japan Calls North Korea’s Behaviour ‘Absolutely Unacceptable’ Udderly Hilarious: Tinder for Bulls TINDER for bulls was a real talking point of the Ploughing Championships which drew to a close in Tullamore, Co Offaly, yesterday. A new app proves that Tinder-style matches prove useful for more than mere humans and can help the environment. Win-win! “BullMatch” uses an algorithm to match cows with
bulls to produce calves with a low carbon footprint. It featured in the new innovation area of the Ploughing Championships which also showcased a self-propelled diet feeder, a robotic arm to help farmers stack bales, a snail farm, a child safety sensor and a solar bin that automatically texts its owner when full.
‘Bomb Scare’ at RTÉ THE TV BUILDING on RTÉ’s campus in Donnybrook was evacuated yesterday evening due to a bomb scare. Shortly before 4.30pm staff in the TV building were told they had to leave the premises immediately. Gardaí carried out searches at the scene. A spokesperson for the force noted that they did not order an evacuation of the building but the building was vacated by staff. The Ray D’Arcy Show, which was on the air when the evacuation took place, continued to broadcast without interruption. The Lyric FM news bulletin, normally broadcast on the half-hour from a studio in the RTÉ newsroom, went to dead air. The radio building,
after North Korea’s foreign minister was quoted as saying he believes the North could consider a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean, reports Reuters. Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said the comment by North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong Ho was utterly unacceptable.
Yeats Collection Should Belong To The Nation THE Yeats family collection goes under the hammer in London next week. Michael Parsons reported in the Irish Times that the collection was first offered to the National Library, the National Gallery and the National Museum, which chose to purchase a selection of Yeats’s grandchildren’s inheritance of hundreds of manuscripts, images and objects. But to click on the catalogue of the collection is to see how much has escaped these national institutions: a treasure trove has been consigned to an auction house. Many items should be pre-
served for the nation rather than being delivered into private hands. “Yeats: the Family Collection” will be auctioned on September 27 in London. What a shame it would be if Yeats’s writing desk, which travelled with him from Galway to his three Dublin addresses, is sold into private hands. It is unfortunate that no one suggested to the Yeats family that Poetry Ireland, in its salubrious new premises, would be a better site for his desk and chair and sketches of the teenage poet reading, facing across Parnell Square to his “friends’ portraits” in the Hugh Lane Gallery.

Mexico Earthquake: Race To Save Children RESCUERS are racing against the clock to reach survivors trapped under the rubble of a school in Mexico City which collapsed during Tuesday’s earthquake. One is a 12-year-old girl who is believed to be sheltering under a table, but rescuers say they do not know how to reach her. At least 21 children and five adults died as the school collapsed. The school was one of dozens of buildings toppled by the quake. So far 230 people are known to have died. President Enrique Peña Nieto has declared three days of mourning for the victims. As rescue operations continued for a second night, attention was fo-
JAPAN’S Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said that North Korea’s remarks and behaviour were “absolutely unacceptable” and provocative to regional and international security. Suga was speaking today after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to make US President Donald Trump pay dearly for threatening to destroy his country, and
cused on the Enrique Rébsamen primary school, in Mexico City’s southern Coapa district. As anxious parents gathered outside awaiting news of missing children, civil protection volunteer Enrique Gardia announced that a thermal scanner had detected survivors trapped between slabs of concrete. “They are alive! Alive!” he shouted. “Someone hit a wall several times in one place, and in another there was a response to light signals with a lamp,” he added. One mother, standing nearby waiting for news of her sevenyear-old daughter, told reporters: “No-one can possibly imagine the pain I’m in right now.”
SO, WOULD Ryanair’s flight drama put you off flying with the airline? Yesterday Ryanair said it would give pilots at some of its largest bases a €10,000 annual pay rise on top of a €12,000 bonus offered this week to those who help the airline alleviate a pilot shortage. As shareholders were reassured at the AGM in Dublin, I couldn’t help but think of the passengers whose travel plans have been disrupted. Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary apologised to shareholders for the cancellation of flights which has disrupted over 300,000 passengers. But surely the spotlight should be on the beleaguered passengers? After all it is they who are left counting the cost – eager travellers with suitcases packed and no means of getting to their destination. They are the real collateral damage in this saga.
Yesterday pilots were offered the bonus in exchange for working an additional 10 days to plug a shortage that last week forced Ryanair to cancel over 2,000 flights in September and October. There were also moves to reassure shareholders, who were told at the AGM that Ryanair would have completed training for a further 120 pilots within two weeks, and would recruit almost 500 new pilots over the next six months. Mr O’Leary also said that he could not rule out axing more flights, but added any further cancellations would not be linked to current pilot roster problems. It seems unfair however that thousands of disgruntled customers were left to deal with the issue at the last minute. These are people who were left stranded, often with very little notice to make alternative plans.

‘Put People’s Needs First’ PANIC and anger was heard throughout the country as a decision was made by the National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics (NCPE) and the HSE to not reimburse the drug Repreeza, manufactured by CSL Behring for people living with the most common genetic lung disorder in Ireland. Alpha-1 patients were at a loss for words and hope when this new broke. This was a drug that these patients were counting on to help slow down the progression of emphysema. I am shocked at this decision. Whether it’s 21 people or 2,000 people, the patients should be entitled to this drug and the government should reimburse the patients, every life is precious. In July of 2015 the RAPID study found that Alpha-1 patients who were treated with Repreeza showed a significant slowdown by 34% in the progression of emphysema, which was measured by CT scan. As a result of these finding, the therapy was licensed by the Europeans Medicines Agency in July of 2017. Ireland was a centre for the research and trials, and it is unexplainable how this drug has been approved reimburse-
ment in 12 other European countries and not here in Ireland. Professor Michael Barry (the director of the NCPE) stated that the decision was not solely based on the costs. He said: “The evidence derived from the main clinical trial wasn’t strong enough, and in conjunction with the high cost, we felt that it wasn’t value for money.” To contradict Professor Barry’s statement, Professor McElvaney who was a consultant respiratory physician involved in the clinical trial of the drug here in Ireland said it was the only trial he had ever seen which slowed down the progress of emphysema. I do not agree with the decision and support the notion of the Irish Government reconsidering this decision and paying for the drug. The role of the Government is to put the people’s needs first. This drug is by no means a cure, but it gives these patients hope of a longer life to spend with family and friends. Michael Healy-Rae, TD, Sandymount, Kilgarvan

‘Ibrahim Was Denied Basic Human Rights’ I WELCOME Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s call for imprisoned Irishman Ibrahim Halawa to be released as soon as possible so that the Irish government can facilitate his return home, following his acquittal on Monday. Mr Halawa’s inability to get a fair trial for four years is a clear violation of his human rights. I am pleased that we finally have a verdict in this ongoing case, which with all the postponements has turned into a saga. Whatever the circumstances, every person is entitled to fair and independent hearing. Between constant postponements and the use of the mass trial format, Ibrahim has been denied his basic human rights over the
past four years. Lest we forget, Ibrahim was still a child when he was first arrested. He has had to endure a period of hardship that is beyond what most of us could imagine while his trial was postponed repeatedly, and that is simply unacceptable. I was the first MEP to raise this issue in Parliament almost four years ago and could not have imagined then that it would be September 2017 before we would see a verdict. I look forward to his return to Ireland where he can finally resume his studies and get on with his life. Sean Kelly, MEP, Killarney

Water Is A Priceless Resource
AT THE September 2017 monthly meeting of Kerry County Council, I proposed that our Government, by means of grant aid, would promote the development of water harvesting in all schools. Such a programme would benefit the environment, reduce demand on public supply and serve as an inspiration to the children. For much of the 20th century human kind polluted most streams, rivers, lakes and seas and that that terrible legacy is still with us. If the human race is to continue to thrive it is imperative that pure clean water is available and
appreciated. Installing water harvesting in schools will show the children that water is a priceless resource that must be respected and cared for. It will show that that they have a responsibility for how the world’s resources are managed and that nature’s bounty is always to be respected and shared. The motion was unanimously agreed and will be forwarded to Government for its consideration. Michael Gleeson (Councillor), Clasheen, Killarney

Netflix - Narcos Season 3
The decision to climax the second season of Narcos with Pablo Escobar’s death was both bold and concerning. While inevitable, killing off the show’s synonymous selling-point so early in its life cycle raised questions of how it could sustain Netflix’s ambitions of filling two more confirmed seasons. Turns out, a clear-out might prove the show’s smartest decision – opening the gateway for a variety of kingpin personalities, new characters and refined thrills
which results in the most engaging season so far! With Escobar out of the picture, season three revolves around the four-headed beast of the Cali Cartel, who are on the cusp of an agreement with the Colombian government to step away from the drug trade and become a legitimate family. Against all odds, Narcos’ third season is a thrilling triumph which reinvigorates the show for a post-Escobar run.

Make A Clean Sweep When It Comes To Home Improvement AUTUMN is the perfect time of year to take stock and turn your home into a dream residence. As the leaves fall, you can get stuck right in to ensuring your premises and its grounds look their absolute best. And of course, your local Tidy Towns committee will also be delighted with your efforts as they await the verdict in this year’s national competition. What’s more, as you will see in these pages, the greater Killarney area offers unrivalled support in the form of businesses and experts in home improvement and DIY.
There’s no shortage of expertise and inspiration when it comes to ensuring your property looks its picture-perfect best and bear in mind that little foresight goes a long way. First of all, draw up a checklist of what you need. You may have to compile a shopping list while you’re at it. Once you have everything to hand, sort out that to-do list and don’t delay in tackling it head on. Create a realistic schedule, keeping in mind that a single Saturday won’t suffice, as you’ll need several days for more involved projects, such as shampooing carpets, clearing
out wardrobes and blitzing the kitchen and living spaces. Decide first if you are going from indoors to outdoors, and have a scheme in mind for the starting and finishing point of both. Whether you are gardening or perfecting your indoor space, focus on one task at a time – and don’t forget to enlist the help of other family members. While wielding the drill can be satisfying in itself, there is also great pleasure in reviewing each finished task – and of course relaxing and enjoying the benefits of a comfortable property.

Express Yourself Through Colour
NOW is a good time to rethink your property’s colour palette. It’s no secret that colour can either make or break a design, but fortunately, it is very easy to choose the perfect colour scheme for you. When the colour’s right, it can enhance feelings of health and wellbeing, modify perceived temperature (make your space feel warmer or cooler), transform perceived space (make your space feel larger, or more cosy and intimate), illuminate dark areas, create mystery and romance in dull areas, and energise static areas.
Colour, and the psychology of colour, is a big design trend. But beware of generalisations — for instance, that green is relaxing, blue is soothing, red is energising — as these only apply when certain hues are used. A vibrant blue or a sharp, electric green definitely would not be relaxing; a deep blue-green might feel cold instead of soothing. The wrong red used in an entire room might create the sensation of entrapment rather than energy. Before planning colour in your personal environment, make a mini-questionnaire and
poll yourself and your family. Your answers are 50% of the project because your color choices depend on them for direction. Think about where the room is and how many windows it has. Also bear in mind what direction the windows are facing. Is there landscaping outside that will have an effect on the colours in the room? Who will use the room, and what will they do there? Is it private or community space? Will it be a sociable and active place, or a peaceful place? How do I want it to feel? Happy hunting when it comes to finding the perfect hues for your living space.

Wedding of the week
Photo Finish For Bride & Groom MICHELLE CLARKE and John Francis O’Mahony’s paths first crossed as a result of their shared love of running so it was only fitting on their big day that the groom joined his friends on a 5k Parkrun in Killarney National Park. John and Michelle met through their local running club Striders of Croydon in November 2014. The following year they started dating and in September 2016 he popped the question at the Meeting of the Waters in his native Killarney. John, from Scartlea, Muckross, and Michelle, from London, were married in St Mary’s Cathedral by Fr Kieran O’Brien and held their reception in the Castlerosse Hotel. Helping them celebrate were the bride’s mother Hazel Clarke and the groom’s father Brendan O’Mahony. Very much in their thoughts on the big day was John’s late mother Margaret Mary O’Mahony. Michelle’s sister Melissa Shepherd was maid of honour with her friend Verena Trend joining forces with John’s sister Peg O’Mahony as bridesmaids. John’s friend Neil Horgan was best man while his son Aaron Morris O’Mahony was groomsman along with his brothers Karol, Stephen and Joseph O’Mahony and Michelle’s brother Stephen Clarke. The bride’s niece Florence Shepherd and the groom’s niece Alexis O’Mahony were flowergirls and the groom’s nephew Airt O’Mahony was pageboy. The bride looked stunning in a Berketex dress with hairstyling by Deirdre Lyne of Halo Hair Salon, Killarney, and makeup by Aine Doherty. The groom cut a dapper dash in a TM Lewin suit while the groomsmen were dressed by Formally Yours, Killarney. Adrian O’Neill captured the big day on camera. “It was very special having so many family and friends travel from London, New York, Canada and Guyana to share in our special day,” said John. The newlyweds’ honeymoon took them on safari to Tanzania followed by a few days in Zanzibar. Michelle is an account manager and John is self-employed specialist interiors consultant. They will reside in London. • If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week, contact Eve Kelliher at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

DEDICATED followers of fashion are getting in gear for one of the major style events of the year on Tuesday, October 10. Always an excellent fundraiser for a variety of organisations in the parish, it is organised by a team including husband and wife James and Claire Houlihan and Tim Kissane, who have been involved in the event since its beginning. James and Tim came up with the idea when they were youth leaders in Fossa Youth Club. “The first fashion show took place in the old church in Fossa and the funds raised that
year were for the youth club,” said James. Subsequent fashion show benefited the new church, local historical society, community centre, playschool, new school and new community centre. The best-dressed lady prize will be sponsored by Keane’s Jewellers, Killarney, while a number of raffle prizes and a door prize will also be up for grabs. The event commences with a cheese and wine reception at 7.30pm and tickets are available from committee members, participating shops and on the door on the night. The Murphys To Tune Up Back Home In Kerry Seeking Kerry Treasures
THE talented country music family The Murphys are looking forward to taking centre stage in their home county as they launch their Irish concert tour in The Gleneagle Hotel on September 28. The first Kerry band ever to top the iTunes country chart in Ireland, The Murphys are also officially the only female songwriters to pen an entire country album to top this chart. “The proudest thing for us as a family from Kerry is representing our home in hub of the Irish country music industry up in Northern Ire-
land,” said Candy Murphy. For their Killarney concert, the group will have Sean Keane as guest star. Since its release in November 2016, The Murphy’s debut self-penned album “Breaking Ground” reached number one in the iTunes Country Album Charts, Ireland – not once but twice. “It was entirely written and co-produced by ourselves,” said Candy. “We are officially the only female songwriters to write an entire country album to top the iTunes Country Chart in Ireland.”
PUBLIC history project National Treasures is calling on the people of Kerry to submit their treasured objects to help tell the story of Irish life over the past 100 years. RTÉ and the National Museum of Ireland are currently working together to create National Treasures, a unique archive documenting how Ireland has developed using ordinary objects treasured by families across the 32 counties. The aim is to gather objects from every county, passed down through generations or relatively recently acquired, which reveal an aspect of the nation’s history, culture and experience. Currently, the project is specifically looking for objects from Kerry that tell the story of the Kingdom since 1917 – whether it’s a ticket from one of the first flights from Kerry airport, an old Jackie Healy-Rae election poster, a sash from the Rose of Tralee or a jersey worn by Paidi O Se, As well as submitting their object online, people from Kerry are encouraged to attend the Munster roadshow which will take place in the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork on October 29. A four-part television series based around the roadshows, presented by John Creedon, will follow next year. See nationaltreasures.ie

Renault Symbioz Concept Contact:
JOHN FLEMING Crash Repair Service Upper Lissivigeen, Killarney, Co. Kerry
Tel 064 6625444 Mobile 087 2506631 Complete Crash Repair Service
THIS super-fast futuristic concept car pumps out 500kW, then transforms into extra rooms for your house. The French car maker unleashes a freaky concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show that transforms to become an extra appendage of your country house… The Renault Symbioz concept is a bona fide head-turning show car leaving you scratching your head in bewilderment. Is this truly a glimpse of the future or just science fiction? Renault says the Symbioz features “real” technology and provides a strong hint a production car inspired by this concept car will be forthcoming in five years or so. Power comes from a pair of electric motors kicking out a supercar-like 500kW/660Nm. As well as being an EV, the Symbioz has level 4 autonomous features, meaning it’ll drive itself even if you’re,
say, changing out of your pyjamas on the way to work. Drive it up to your specially built house and the car’s incredible folding doors and roof fully extend, allowing the Symbioz to become an extra room. Renault explains the car can “…be an open space like a living room where people can spend time together and talk. The cabin interior was
inspired by the design of living rooms.” The party trick to end them all – a car that transforms into a sitting room It may seem far-fetched, but as ride-sharing, electric vehicles and autonomous cars start to make hit mainstream society, vehicles like this, with lounge-room layouts, could become common.

Garden Magic Debby Looney
Plant Power
Planting hedging could not be easier, says Debby Looney DUE to the many emails I received following the previous article on hedging, I thought I would follow it up with some more ideas and advice. The question I was asked most during the week was: “which hedge is best for waterlogged soil?” The plant which springs to mind immediately is of course willow. Willow will soak up a lot of water, and the branches are attractively coloured in the winter. It is a good plant if the site is exposed also, as it will be flexible enough to stand up to the worst winter storm. Second on the list would certainly be dogwoods, or Cornus varieties. However with both of these plants you will need space, as they would not be suitable for pruning into a tight hedge. Viburnum opulus, or the Guelder rose, is suitable, as are Aucubas (spotted laurels), and Amelanchiers. All of these will be available as bare root plants a little later in the season. Another observation readers had, was that I did not write about conifers, apart from Leylandiis. This is true, as I tend to think everyone’s garden is as windy as mine…where most conifers just go brown…. Yew trees, Taxus baccata, are an exception. Yews are hardy, do not mind wet soil, and can be pruned very tightly. The only drawback is that all parts of the plant are poisonous, and care should be taken, especially if you have young children. Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Goldcrest’ is also a fine hedging plant for the sheltered garden. Thuja varieties are a popular choice at the moment, especially Thuja occidentalis ‘Pyramidalis’, which retains its narrow columnar shape, without pruning. The most effective way to plant these is about four to five feet apart, so that the natural shape remains obvious. Hedges are great for deterring intruders, both human and animal! – and with that in mind, thorny varieties are the obvious choice! Hawthorn, and especially Blackthorn are excellent choices, but Berberis and Pyracantha are also worth considering. Pyracantha is semievergreen, gets white flowers and is covered in yellow, orange or red berries in the autumn. Planting hedging could not be easier. If planting barerooted hedging dig holes which will easily accommodate the roots. Never plant the stem too deep! • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

National League (Division 1) Scotts Lakers 76 Dublin Lions 75 Killarney’s return to National League basketball may have been long overdue but Saturday night’s pulsating season opener was well worth the wait. Over 500 eager spectators packed into the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre to see St Paul’s (playing under the Scotts Lakers banner) get their Division 1 campaign up and running - and not a single home supporter left disappointed. Although, it has to be said, things got off to a fairly inauspicious start. After a dramatic countdown led by MC Brendan Fuller, the referees were forced to send both sets of players back to the sideline because of a problem with the scoreboard clock. When the game finally did tip-off, the response amongst the crowd was fairly muted but it didn’t take long for the home fans to find their voices.
With Bulgarian guard Mihail Kapitanov pulling the strings and local lads Andrew Fitzgerald and Pádraig Lucey making their presence felt down low, the Lakers raced into an 8-3 lead. The Dublin Lions responded well, however, and some sloppy offense from the home team helped the visitors to go on a 12-0 run. The Lakers rallied but a three-point buzzerbeater from Zach Burnett meant the Lions led by 8 (15-23) at the end of the first. Both teams looked a little shaky in the opening quarter which, to be fair, is totally understandable. For many players it was their first time lining out together in a competitive game and there were bound to have been some opening night jitters. Coach Vojkan Bencic would have been far happier with his team’s showing in the second quarter as, incredibly, the Lakers limited the opposition to just four points in the entire ten-minute period. Fitzgerald and club captain Philip O’Connor, who started from the bench, impressed but it was San Francisco native Justin Tuason who really came to the fore as the half wore on. The silky guard, who formerly lined out with Neptune in Cork, really caught the eye with a string of highlight plays that energised teammates and
spectators alike. He set up big man Lucey with a flashy behind-theback pass to give the Lakers a 28-26 lead before knocking down a three off a Kapitanov assist. The Lions cut the deficit with a free throw but Tuason hit another field goal at the horn to make it 33-27 at the half. It may have been a very low-scoring encounter but Tuason’s enthusiasm was contagious as the atmosphere began to slowly build in the sold-out arena. Neither team flew out of the traps in the second half but again it was Tuason who provided the spark when he scored, forced a turnover and scored again to open up a commanding 11-point lead midway through the third. The Lions fought back well, however, and despite big three-pointers from Kapitanov and O’Connor, the Lakers led by just five (52-47) at the end of the third. It was 62-54 with six minutes to play and the home crowd smelled blood, but an unbelievable 11–point scoring burst from Lions guard Burnett turned the tie on its head. The Lakers desperately needed a response and Tuason duly obliged, pulling up to hit a spectacular

‘A Magnificent Occasion With An Electric Atmosphere’
The Scotts Lakers St Paul’s team, front, Mihail Kapitanov, Dylan O’Sullivan, Con O’Mahony, Cian Clernon, Philip O’Connor (Captain), Mark Greene and Shane Horgan; back, Vojkan Bencic (Coach), Paul Clarke, Padraig Lucey, Andrew Fitzgerald, Justin Tuason, Billy Wiseman and Antuan Bootle.
NATIONAL LEAGUE BASKETBALL returned to Killarney with a bang on Saturday night when local side Scotts Lakers edged out Dublin Lions by a single point in a thrilling encounter. Scotts Lakers went into this match without American power forward Antuan Bootle, who picked up an ankle injury in a pre-season tournament last week. However they had several aces who stepped it up with Irish-American Justin Tuason and 6’7” powerhouse Padraig Lucey leading the way. Former Irish schoolboys basketball international Padraig Lucey has spent the past three years in Australia after completing an Australian Rules football rookie contract with AFL side Geelong Cats. He returned home to Killarney last week and only picked up a basketball for the first time in five years in the past few days. It was a magnificent occasion with an electric atmosphere and the St Paul’s national league committee left no stone unturned getting the Sports Centre and basketball match set-up looking fantastic.
Upcoming Fixtures: Scotts Lakers St Pauls players Philip O’Connor, left, and Mark Greene, right, with Karen Greene, Damien and Eileen Switzer.
September 23: LIT Celtics (away) at 6pm September 30: BFG Neptune (home) at 7.30pm

three in spite of the contact to make it a tie game. Unfortunately, he was unable to complete what would have been a remarkable four-point play. The Lakers trailed by three with two minutes to go but lay-ups from Fitzgerald, Tuason and Lucey made it 71-68 with a minute on the clock. The visitors went to the line to hit two free shots with 43 seconds to go and the Lakers came forward in search of a potentially game-winning basket. Just a few short seconds into the shot clock, the Lions failed to track O’Connor off a screen and when Kapitanov found him in the corner, the former Irish international made no mistake to drain the three and open up a four-point lead with just 35 to play. The Lions scrambled to find an opening but tight Killarney defence kept them at bay. A kick ball meant the shot clock was reset to 14 but, with 15.7 seconds remaining on the game clock, all the Lakers had to do was not foul. What happened next was hard to believe. Main man Burnett gathered the inbounds in the corner, turned, nailed the three… and was fouled. Luckily for Tuason, the alleged culprit, Burnett missed from the line. Kapitanov, one of the smallest players on the floor, gathered the rebound and was immediately
Supporters at The Auracle (see what I did there?) certainly got their money’s worth on Saturday night fouled and with the Lions over the limit, the Bulgarian went to the line. Kapitanov showed great composure to hit the clutch free throws and the Lakers were 76-73 up with 12 to go. Once again, all they had to do was not foul. Astoundingly, Andrew Fitzgerald was called for a foul before the ball was even inbounded, resulting in two free throws and possession for the opposition. The Lions player certainly exaggerated the contact but nevertheless it seemed as though the Lakers were
hell-bent on throwing this one away. Both free-throws were made to make it a one-point game and all of a sudden the Lions had 11 seconds (and the ball) to get the winner. Burnett drove to the basket but Pádraig Lucey denied him at the rim with a huge block. The Dubliners secured the offensive rebound, missed the jump shot, corralled another board, and missed again from close range. Somehow the Lakers held on for the victory. It was a thrilling start to life back in the big time but Coach Bencic and his players will be well aware that their game management will have to be infinitely better if they’re to prosper going forward. Kapitanov, Tuason, O’Connor and Mark Greene all looked good in the back court and with star man Antuan Bootle, who was absent through injury, set to return and bolster the forward division, there’s definitely the makings of a good team there. Supporters at The Auracle (see what I did there?) certainly got their money’s worth on Saturday night. Personally I can’t wait for the next home game. Lakers top scorers: J Tuason (21), P Lucey (14) and A Fitzgerald (11). Lions top scorers: Z Burnett (26), I Markiewicz (16) and H Natsiyanwa (10).

Captain Fantastic Shows The Way For Historic Win Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald
Pics: Don MacMonagle
THE Kerry seniors did not make it to Croke Park for last Sunday’s All-Ireland football final, but the Kerry minors romped home 6-17 to 1-8 to capture their Cup for the fourth year in a row. This was a fantastic team display as captain David Clifford led by example scoring 4-4, all from play.
HISTORY MAKERS Kerry were the first team to win four minor titles in-a-row and that cannot be bettered as this is the last year of under-18 football. From now on the competition will be for under-17s. All kinds of records were made. The final score of 6-17 was the biggest in the history of the competition. What’s more the 24-point winning margin is the highest winning margin in the history of this competition and the first goal scored by David Clifford must surely be the fastest goal scored just 12 seconds in to the minor game. 4-4 is the highest score from play in a minor final as the captain can take yet another well deserved bow. Kerry averaged a winning margin of 15 points throughout the competition.
A CLASS APART All of the Kerry team played well, but their captain was a class apart. The first minute goal was a gem. Hartin did save well from Jack Griffin, but he could do nothing to prevent Clifford’s second goal. He had to work hard shaking of the close attention of the Derry backs but nothing was impossible for the Fossa man. Goal number two and the match was over as a contest. One could just marvel at the skill of the captain and the great backup he got from the rest of the team. Peter Keane had the team finely tuned for his second year in a row in charge. After 15 minutes the captain’s vision was very apparent as he picked out Fiachra Clifford (no relation) for the latter to score goal number three. At half-time Kerry led by 3-8 to 0-5.
MORE GOALS Kerry kept up the pressure in the second half as more of the Kerry players continued to show their brilliance on the big stage. Six minutes after halftime came goal number four for Kerry when Fiachra Clifford scored his second goal following good approach work by centre back Michael Potts. Derry were awarded a penalty in the 40th minute and this was converted by Callum Brown. That was the only joy they had as they failed to score again until the period of injury time. Kerry were not worried by that goal, as they went on to assert supremacy. Another goal from the captain and the last one was a real gem. Other Kerry scorers were B Friel on five points (four from play), D O’Sullivan on three points while Jack Griffin scored two points and there was a point each from Donnchadh O’Sullivan, E. Horan and A Donoghue.
MAN-OF-THE-MATCH This was a great team effort, but best of all was manof-the-match David Clifford, a credit to his family, his Fossa club and his county. Will he be lured to Australia? I certainly hope not as I look forward to seeing the genius in action here in Kerry. He will certainly be in East Kerry’s plans for the Kerry SFC in Tralee. The quarter-finals will be played this weekend with double bills in Tralee on tomorrow evening and a double bill in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday.
DUBS’ THREE-IN-A-ROW Dublin proved that they are a great team as the completed the 3 –in-a –row of All Ireland SFC titles just edging out luckless Mayo by that single point 1-17 to 1-16.

Clifford Doesn’t Just Run The Show, He Is The Show
The Kerry minors completed their historic four in a row last weekend and there’s no doubting who the star was, writes Adam Moynihan AS THE referee threw the ball in on Sunday, one message would have been ringing in the ears of the Derry backs. “Keep it tight.” 16.7 seconds later David Clifford stuck the ball in the corner of their net and the task facing them, a difficult one to begin with, already seemed virtually impossible. Not for the first time (and surely not for the last), Clifford ran the show in Croke Park. In actual fact when Clifford plays, he doesn’t just run the show, he is the show. He kicked a frankly ridiculous 4-4 in yet another mesmeric display, leading his team to a farcical 24-point victory. I watched the game in town and fellas were just looking around at each other shaking their heads. Whenever Kerry crossed the halfway line, people edged forward on their seats anticipating another piece of Cliffy magic. Performances like these have simply never been seen at this level. To be honest, they’re rarely seen at any level. You’d have to feel for the rest of this year’s minor panel who are very much living in their captain’s shadow at the moment. No one man can win an All-Ireland on his own and Clifford has undoubtedly benefited from being part of an excellent Kerry team, both this year and in 2016. But when it comes down to it, if a guy scores four goals in an All-Ireland Final, and 10-68 (10-50 from play) across 12 minor championship games in total, you have to sit up and take notice. Normally you’d like to spread the credit out and talk about as many of these young players as possible, but what David Clifford is doing just isn’t normal. Whether he goes on to great things at senior level, or if he even stays in Ireland, remains to be seen but it’s difficult to foresee a timeline where David Clifford doesn’t excel at what he does. At 6’2” and with a phenomenal football IQ, unbelievable skill set and a head for the big occasion, the Fossa native has all the tools to achieve whatever he puts his mind to. As a Kerryman and just a football fan in general, I hope he puts his mind to winning a few more All-Irelands.

Eight Teams Gunning For Championship Glory Adam Moynihan looks ahead to a huge weekend of football as the quest for the Bishop Moynihan Cup reaches the quarter-final stage Clifford’s year isn’t over yet
Relegated Rockies hoping to save season
Kerins O’Rahilly’s v East Kerry Saturday, September 23, at 4pm Austin Stack Park EAST KERRY recovered well from their opening round defeat to Rathmore and made light work of Mid Kerry before overcoming a ten-point deficit to beat St Brendan’s in the last round. David Clifford came off the bench to score a crucial goal in extra time in that one and you only need to look at the current Kerry minor team to see that the future is bright for football in the district. The current crop of players will be hoping to lay down a marker by making a semi-final this year at the very least. Rahilly’s have been the surprise package of this year’s Championship. They started the year off terribly by losing to Kenmare and Austin Stacks in the Club Championship, which means they’ve had a relegation playoff with Kilcummin hanging over their heads all summer. Their league form has been patchy at best but they’ve somehow managed to get the job done on the big stage. Victories over two of the pre-tournament favourites, South Kerry and Dingle, have brought them to the last eight. Glenflesk marksman Dara Roche has really caught the eye in the 2017 Championship and with Clifford also likely to feature, the Rahilly’s defence will have to be at the very top of their game if they’re to have any hope of advancing. It should be a close one. Verdict: East Kerry by two. Kerins O’Rahilly’s Last year: Quarter-final (lost to Dr Crokes) Winners: Six times (1933, 1939, 1953, 1954, 1957, 2002) Current form: WWLWL Tournament odds: 10/1 East Kerry Last year: Round 2B (lost to Milltown/Castlemaine) Winners: Five times (1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1997, 1998, 1999) Clubs: Firies, Fossa, Glenflesk, Gneeveguilla, Listry, Spa Current form: LWW Tournament odds: 8/1
Austin Stacks v West Kerry Saturday, September 23, at 5.45pm Austin Stack Park
Stacks will be looking to put their disastrous Division 1 campaign behind them by mounting a seemingly unlikely challenge for this year’s County Championship. One win from eleven league games tells its own story but victories over St Kieran’s (after a replay) and Legion mean they’re still in with a fighting chance of reclaiming the title they last won in 2014. Interestingly, this young West Kerry side have also defeated Kieran’s and Legion en route to the quarter final having initially lost their opening round fixture against Feale Rangers. At present, these two teams seem to be travelling on opposite trajectories but there might be one more kick left in the Rockies yet. Verdict: Austin Stacks by one. Austin Stacks Last year: Quarter-final (lost to Kenmare District) Winners: 12 times (1928, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1936, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1986, 1994, 2014) Current form: LLLLL Tournament odds: 15/1 West Kerry Last year: Round 3 (lost to Austin Stacks) Winners: Three times (1984, 1985, 1990) Clubs: An Ghaeltacht, Annascaul, Castlegregory, Lispole Current form: LWW Tournament odds: 20/1
Have Kenmare got Crokes’ number?
Dr Crokes v Kenmare Shamrocks Sunday, September 24 at 1.30pm Fitzgerald Stadium
If the Club Championship decider is anything to go by, this could well be the tie of the round. The Crokes were widely expected to have too much for the reigning Intermediate champions two weeks ago but an outstanding performance from promising youngster Seán O’Shea helped Kenmare to force a
draw and extra time. In the end, an Ambrose O’Donovan goal proved decisive and Pat O’Shea’s men secured their fourth Club Championship in six years. Whether or not Kenmare have another big championship display in their locker remains to be seen but, either way, Crokes should be strong enough to prevail. Verdict: Crokes by three. Dr Crokes Last year: Champions (beat Kenmare District) Winners: 11 times (1901, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1991, 2000, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016) Current form: WWWW Tournament odds: 8/11 Kenmare Shamrocks Last year: Intermediate champions (beat Templenoe) Winners: Never Current form: WLWWL Tournament odds: 18/1
Rathmore can trouble South Kerry Rathmore v South Kerry Sunday, September 24, at 3.15pm Fitzgerald Stadium
Rathmore are motoring along nicely. Having defeated East Kerry in the opening round they comfortably beat Feale Rangers to safely progress to the last eight. Their league form has been equally sound and they just missed out on a spot in the Division 1 league final by two points South Kerry steadied the ship following their surprise defeat to Rahilly’s by hammering Kilcummin and then seeing off Dingle with six points to spare. The bookies have them at second favourites to win the tournament outright and they’ll be expected to win on Sunday but Rathmore, ever unpredictable, could still have a major say in this year’s Championship. Verdict: Rathmore by one. Rathmore Last year: Semi-final (lost to Kenmare District) Winners: Never Current form: WLLWW Tournament odds: 12/1 South Kerry Last year: Quarter-final (lost to Dingle) Winners: Ten times (1955, 1956, 1958, 1981, 1982, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2015) Clubs: Derrynane, Dromid Pearses, Renard, Skellig Rangers, Sneem, St. Mary’s, St. Michael’s/Foilmore, Valentia, Waterville Current form: LWW Tournament odds: 5/1
Mayo Left Heartbroken (Again): The Three Biggest Talking Points
Words: Adam Moynihan
1. What was Donal Vaughan thinking? In the 50th minute, Dublin’s John Small (who was on a yellow) unleashed a ferocious shoulder to the front of Colm Boyle that sent the Mayo man crumbling to the ground. Mayo only trailed by a point, had a free 30 metres from goal and their opponents were about to lose a man. What happened next truly beggars belief. Donal Vaughan raced in and clotheslined Small in reckless fashion and
left referee Joe McQuilllan with little choice but to send both players from the field. Had Vaughan kept his composure, Mayo would have had an extra player for the last 27 minutes of an All-Ireland Final that they ultimately lost by a point. The Westerners played with savage intensity throughout but Vaughan overstepped the mark at a crucial juncture and, it has to be said, let his teammates down big time in the process.
2. Cillian O’Connor’s stoppage time free With all the talk of unfavourable refereeing decisions, Mayo were handed more than enough chances to finally make it over the line. In fact, there were serious question marks surrounding the 74th minute free awarded to sharpshooter Cillian O’Connor. I thought the decision was a bit harsh on Michael Fitzsimons, and more importantly it actually should have been Dublin’s line ball in the first place, so Mayo were very much gifted the op-
portunity to take the lead in the dying embers. Unfortunately for Mayo, O’Connor hit the post and the rest is history. 3. Lee Keegan’s GPS The 2016 Player of the Year has come in for major criticism for apparently throwing his GPS device at Dublin’s Dean Rock as he kicked the match-winning score. Rock came out afterwards and said he didn’t even notice but from Mayo’s point of view it’s a fairly sad way to go out. I thought Dublin were supposed to be the bad guys?

Singapore Rained On Vettel’s Parade SEBASTIAN VETTEL threw away the opportunity to regain the championship lead with an off the start crash taking out his team mate Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Raikkonen made a strong getaway from fourth on the grid and was drawing alongside Verstappen on the inside as they approached Turn 1. But as polesitter Sebastian Vettel edged left, Verstappen became the meat in a Ferrari sandwich and all three made contact. Raikkonen and Verstappen were out on the spot, while Vettel briefly continued to lead the race until spinning his heavily damaged car into retirement before the first lap was complete. Ferrari had been quick to lay responsibility at Verstappen’s door following the drama, but in the immediate aftermath the Red Bull driver disagreed, instead pointing the finger clearly at Vettel and insisting he had done all he could to avoid contact. Race Stewards declared the clash a racing incident and took no further action. It was clear from the footage that Vettel was defending his position but had no way in knowing
where Raikkonen was. But when you are fitting for the championship this was very poor judgement on Vettel’s part. All scenarios should be going through his head at this point and a conservative approach
Victory For Cronin & Galvin
would have been the better option. There are some quick guys between him and his championship rival, Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso was even in the mix, what a race it would have been. If all remained on
track Vettel would have regained the championship lead in a race but with Hamilton the eventual winner extend his lead to 28 points. A gap with will be difficult to close with six races remaining.

In Prestone British Rally Championship AFTER a thrilling final stage, which saw turbo trio Fredrik Ahlin, Keith Cronin and Matthew Edwards battle it out in motorsport mecca the Isle of Man, it was Killarney & District Motor Club’s Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin, co-driver, that took the
championship crown. After three days of gruelling racing, the Ford Fiesta R5 driver won the second leg of the rally by just 0.1 seconds from Edwards, allowing him to take home the championship title for the fourth time.
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy ANOTHER win on the road for Munster as they secured their third win from three games since the start of the new format PRO14 last Saturday. The Red army took the trip to Swansea to take on Welsh outfit the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium. Having beaten the Ospreys three times last season, the odds were always going to favour the Irishmen. The home side were first on the scoresheet with a well worked try by James Hook, however nice tries by Jean Kleyn
The Kilcummin Under-13 ladies football county champions, Division C, who beat Southern Gaels B recently.
and Darren Sweetnam gave the visitors the lead at half time. Tyler Bleyendaal had a mixed day from the boot but added the rest of the points as the Irish Province ran out 16-21 winners in the end to remain top of the conference. Tonight Munster are away to Glasgow Warriors at the Scotstoun Stadium and the lads will be looking to continue the goo run to date. Leinster travelled to South Africa to take on the Southern Kings at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. The match itself didn’t live up the drama of the visa fiasco during the week which saw Kiwis Isa Nacewa and Jamison Gibson-Park sent home because of an administration error at Leinster. Guy Easterby, head of Leinster Business Operations admitted
that lessons were learned. Even though the two players were sent home, the visitors won 31 points to 10. Meanwhile Ulster beat the Scarlets and Connacht were the only province to lose at the weekend. A mixed weekend for the Irish teams. Closer to home the Munster Junior League kicks off this Sunday with Killarney RFC taking on rivals Castleisland in the first round of Division 2 of the Munster Junior leagues. A cracker is in store as Killarney aim to drive on from last years hugely successful season. So, if you want to catch a top quality rugby match, you don’t need to travel to Scotland, this local derby will be a cracking match. All welcome to Aghadoe, this Sunday at 2.30pm.

Hearty congratulations to both Niall Donohue and Donnchadh O’Sullivan on their marvelous victory in the All-Ireland Minor Final last weekend. Fossa LOTTO: 17th September 2017. Numbers drawn were 4, 13, 21, 22. There was no jackpot winner. Next week’s jackpot will be €4,800. CONGRATS: A huge congratulations to David Clifford and his Kerry Minor team mates who completed a historic four in a row on Sunday. It was a complete team performance and great credit must go to Peter Keane and his backroom team for having them in pristine shape for the final. On a day when there were fifteen stars on the pitch for Kerry, one man stood head and shoulders above the rest. Scoring an incredible 4-04, David gave his greatest ever display at headquarters, social media went into meltdown and people simply ran out of superlatives to describe the talent that this boy is. He is a credit to his family, club and county. Well done also to Sophie Dennehy who gave a massive performance in the Primary games at half time of the minor game, playing in the sky-blue jersey of Dublin, she is a star of the future.

On The Ball | Monday 5.30pm Junior Club Football Championship Listry 1.09 Lispole 0.10. Listry advanced in the Junior Football Championship following a 3-point victorious win over Lispole in Strand Road in Tralee last Saturday evening. Listry, playing against the wind, got off to a good start by Joe Clifford putting the 1st score on the score board from play after 3 minutes. Lispole’s Cathal O’Sullivan and Declan O’Sullivan from play put 2 points on the board for Lispole, this was the only time throughout the match that Lispole were ahead. After 10 minutes Listry’s Joe Clifford scored Listry’s only goal and this set the tone for the 1st half, putting Listry well ahead going into the second. Derry Ahern was swift with the ball in the first half scoring 2 points along with Gary O’Sullivan who also got a point. Cathal O’Sullivan from Lispole dominated the scoreboard by putting 4 points on the scoreboard, alongside Declan O’Sullivan with 1 point in the 1st half. Lispole showed strength and hunger throughout the 1st half, making 2 attempts to get goals on the scoreboard, however Listry proved too strong. Half Time: Listry 1.05 Lispole 0.05 Listry’s Joe Clifford’s talent and skill showed in the 2nd half as he got 3 points from play for Listry. Lispole started putting scores on the scoreboard with Declan and Cathal O’Sullivan scoring, the two main scorers throughout the match for Lispole. Sub: Matthew Sean Griffin came in for Ciaran O’Sullivan 15 minutes into the second half, scored his 1st point, 4 minutes later. Listry’s Anthony Kennedy put the final touches on the game by scoring the final point for Listry before the final whistle was blown, giving Listry a worthy win.
Killarney Legion GAA Massive congrats to Cian Gammell who became the latest Legionnaire to bring a Celtic Cross back to Dirreen. Although David Clifford rightly stole the headlines with a majestic performance it must be said the Kerry defence to a man was superb, continuously beating their man to the ball and counter attacking at pace. Cian, named at left corner back but lining out in the half back line, put in clever efficient display and now has 4 All Ireland medals to his name after a hugely satisfying 18 months. Due reward for a young player who spent endless hours on his own in Dirreen practicing and perfecting his skills at a very early age. Physical trainer Chris Flannery made sure the team was razor sharp while physio Katie O Driscoll had everyone fit and ready. Peter Keane now has an undefeated record as Kerry minor manager, an achievement which will stand with the best of them, one which he can be rightly proud of. UNDER 15 GIRLS: On Monday night Legion Ladies U15’s travelled to Na Gaeil in Tralee to compete in their U15 Div 2 county semi-final. The Girls were
down in numbers owing to some being out sick and fielding as 13 a side bravely took on the Tralee girls. They started well and kept in touch for the initial stages with some skillfully taken points but two goals by a strong Na Gaeil team forced us into defensive play and while the girls stopped any further breaches of defence for goals, Na Gaeil managed to put away the game with points. To our girls credit they battled to the end and made some valiant attacks but we were unable to capitalize owing to having too many players pulled back in defensive positions. Credit to Na Gaeil they had some strong performances on the pitch which kept their forwards with plenty of supply. Focus for the girls will now revert back to their pending East Kerry Finals.
