END OF THE ROAD: The nine top of the range cars that were seized by CAB in Killarney.
CAB take possession of large Killarney property
The Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) has taken possession of a large property, nine high end cars, cash and expensive watches in Killarney following a court order in relation to ‘Operation Tarmac’. | By Sean Moriarty Yesterday morning (Thursday), CAB officers sealed off a house in the Upper Ballycasheen area in a planned follow-up to the previous 'Operation Tarmac' raids that date back to 2017. CAB disconnected the water and electric supply and fitted an alarm to the property, which is now in the ownership of the State. Personnel from Killarney Garda Station

were instrumental in 'Operation Tarmac' - one of the biggest CAB has ever investigated into deception crimes - which includes laying poor quality tarmac and over charging for minor repair works. The gang is reported to have struck in
almost every county in Ireland as well as Britain and mainland Europe. An undercover operation involving Killarney-based Gardai under the direction of Superintendent Flor Murphy started four years ago.
Almost €9k raised to help get tragic Polish man home | By Sean Moriarty Communities have rallied and raised almost €9,000 in days after the sudden and shock death of a Polish man living in Killarney.
BIKER: Grzegorz 'Pająk’ Pfister was a popular member of the Kerry motorcycling community. Photo: Marke Hajdasz
Father of two, Grzegorz 'Pająk’ Pfister who was living in Caherane Meadows died suddenly after suffering a heart attack on April 16 - the day before his 49th birthday. He leaves behind his wife Maria, and two sons Mike (14) and Mateusz (13) from his first marriage, and their mother Ula.
The stonemason was a very popular member of the Kerry Motorbike Riders group and the Polish community in Killarney. Almost immediately a group of Kerry motorcyclists came together to set up a GoFundMe page: 'Help us bring Grzegorz Pfister 'Pająk' home' with a €10,000 target to repatriate him back to his hometown of Zory. Well-known Killarney photographer Marek Hajdasz, who is also a member of Kerry Motorbike Riders, is one of the main organisers of the fundraiser. “It is very complicated because of the
The officers, known a 'Profilers', receive additional Garda training from CAB. Local Gardai conduct the initial investigation and report their findings to CAB. “This is all down to the Gardai in Killarney who started the investigation and then handed over their findings to CAB who then did what they do best,” a Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. 'Operation Tarmac' was before the High Court in Dublin on Tuesday. Yesterday's possession was part of the completion of that operation and the State now officially owns the property and assets. During the court sitting CAB were also given permission to take possession of nine vehicles which included five BMWs, two Volkswagen Passats, one Audi, one Mercedes with an estimated retail value of €500,000 seized previously as part of the investigation. Four bank and credit union accounts, totalling €177,104 were frozen at the time, have now been turned over to the State. Cash to the value of €126,605 and GB£6,935, seized in earlier operations, have now become official State property too as well as 12 luxury watches, and a Louis Vuitton Bag. times,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We wanted to get him home in a coffin but that is not allowed, so Pająk must go for cremation first. Once that is done it will take seven or 10 days to get him home by a specialist transport company. When we know the dates that he will arrive in Poland we need to book flights for the family here. And there is paperwork in Poland too.” The fundraiser was launched over the weekend and already over €8,771 has been raised by the Polish and motorcycle communities in Kerry including an anonymous donation of €1,000. “Those who knew him know he was a hardcore biker,” Marek added. “People have been very generous, and we have decided, that once all funeral costs are paid, we will divide up the rest equally between his two boys and Maria.”

Conservation corps plan for Killarney National Park Retired National Parks and Wildlife Service’s Park Ranger Peter O’Toole has been put forward as the ideal candidate to lead a proposed voluntary conservation corps within Killarney National Park. The proposal was announced to Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce members during special online meetings earlier this week. Chamber members were told that a proposal to establish a voluntary conservation to work on key projects in Killarney National Park is being considered by the NPWS in association with key local stakeholders. The idea was suggested by the Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, during one online meeting. A follow-up online meeting also involved the Mayor of Killarney Cllr Brendan Cronin, Assistant Secretary General at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the
Gaeltacht Niall Ó Donnchú and Regional Manager with the NPWS Seamus Hassett. That meeting heard the framework for the proposal was already in place through the well-established Killarney Mountain Meitheal Group and Chamber President, Niall Kelleher said a conservation corps would generate even greater enthusiasm and community involvement. “Our National Park, given its importance environmentally, socially and in terms of the tourism business it generates, is the economic lifeblood of our town and county and its role cannot be understated,” Mr Kelleher said. He said having Peter O’Toole, a retired and vastly experienced NPWS park rang-

er, as leader of the meitheal was a great asset. “He is the ideal candidate to steer the group in the right direction,” the Chamber President added. Mr Kelleher called on the reactivation of a works programme for the meitheal as soon as reasonably possible and the meeting heard there is a great crew of volunteers willing and anxious to get moving on projects within the park. Meitheal Coordinator, Peter O’Toole, said if the group can assist with fire patrols, which is a big problem for the National
Business community calls for more outdoor dining locations | By Sean Moriarty The business community in Killarney will call on Kerry County Council to include more than one area in the town centre for the proposed new All Weather Dining Scheme plan. Last week, the Killarney Advertiser revealed that Kenmare Place has been earmarked for the Fáilte Ireland funded but local authority managed scheme. Killarney is one of eight towns in Ireland selected for the funding with Dingle the only other Kerry town. Elected members of the Killarney Municipal District are due to meet Council officials later today (Friday) to discuss ways of moving the project forward under a very tight timeframe. Ahead of today’s meeting, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce held an online discussion on Wednesday afternoon, where members and non-members were invited to air their views on the project. Wednesday’s Chamber meeting was told that the new scheme will not be in place for this summer season.
SELECTION PROCESS: Chamber President Niall Kelleher explained at an online meeting this week that the selection process for outdoor dining is based on Fáilte Ireland guidelines.
Kerry County Council’s next step is to appoint a design architect. The completed application, including design, must be lodged with Fáilte Ireland by May 27 and if Killarney’s bid is successful the project must then be completed by November this year to qualify for the funds.
Several business owners asked why the project is exclusively linked to Kenmare Place and why other locations in the town aren’t considered. Suggestions to include New St, Market Lane and Main St as part of the scheme and even the full pedestrianisation of
Park and special areas of conservation, those involved would be more than happy to help. “Reactivating the Meitheal would also greatly help individuals to cope with the current difficult period and the impact COVID-19 is having on personal well-being,” he said. The online meeting heard that the Killarney community is looking forward to the publication of the Government’s new five-year biodiversity action plan and to determining how the town and its people can contribute to its implementation. High St were all put forward during the 45-minute meeting. Chamber President Niall Kelleher explained that the selection process is based on Fáilte Ireland guidelines. He said the reason why Kenmare Place and the Boatyard in Dingle were selected was because they are already pedestrianised or partially pedestrianised. This ruled out Plunkett St as its current status as a full-time pedestrian street is only in place to allow social distancing during the pandemic and is expected to return to a daytime vehicle street once the health crisis is over. This also ruled out areas in New St and High St where footpaths have been widened as part of the ‘Safe Streets’ COVID-19 measures and where temporary outdoor dining furniture was placed last summer by adjacent businesses. Mr Kelleher is also an elected member of the Killarney Municipal District and is best placed to act as a bridge between the business community and the Council’s Executive. He will bring the business community’s concerns to today’s Council meeting. “What I take from the [Chamber’s] meeting is that these [outdoor dining projects] should try to have a broad scope,” he said. “And that the local authority needs to look at a number of locations as the town is big enough.” It is understood that if the project gets off the ground it will have a lifespan of a minimum of five years.

FAI Celtic summer camps return this July After a year of little or no outdoor sport activity youngsters will be thrilled to hear that Killarney Celtic are preparing to run summer camps in July.
CREATING: Teacher Lorraine Crowley and student Lauren Fleming from Killarney Community College pictured creating photos for the 2022 charity calendar.
Launched this week the camps will take place from July 5 and the week commencing July 19. Both camps will be run by FAI accredited coaches who will have all completed Garda Vetting procedures and attended child safeguarding courses. "We are expecting big interest in our camps this year," Head Coach Brian Spillane said. He is advising parents to book early and said he fully expects both camps to sell out quickly. Camps will operate over five days and are keenly priced at €65 with additional siblings discounted to €60. "Each child booked on our camps will receive a branded and summer camp crested training top together with a quality ball of their very own to take away."
Skills involved in the game will be top of the agenda held in a fun and friendly atmosphere whilst availing of the best facilities in all of Kerry at Celtic Park. "We are really looking forward to welcoming new and past participants to our camps this year." Camps are open to all boys and girls of all abilities from age four to 13 and previous experience of football is not necessary and nor is membership of the club. All camps are fully inclusive and will be operated in line with all COVID-19 and FAI protocols in place. "The club will adhere to all Government and HSE guidelines and safety of all our participants will be our primary concern." Booking is available now through the Clubforce App or online at www.clubforce.com. A QR code is available for scanning which will take you directly to the booking page. "We are looking forward to welcoming you to Celtic Park."
Students click the shutter for 2022 calendar Huge opening for guided Students are putting their creativity to the test by capturing images under various themes as a fundraiser for their school and a local charity. | By Michelle Crean Inspired by their teacher Lorraine Crowley, who has a passion for photography, and organised with the Parents Council of Killarney Community College, First to Sixth Year students, as well incoming First Year students, are being encouraged to click the shutter to capture a different theme every month. Lorraine will then put together a display of photographs from each theme, from each year group per month and the calendar will be designed and published over the summer ready to go on sale in the autumn. After developing an interest in photography in 2016, Lorraine has experience in creating her own calendar for charities in her local area. In December 2018, a neighbour of Lorraine's, John Eagle, passed away from cancer. John was a local photographer in the Beara Peninsula and was known widely around the country. Before he passed away, he asked Lorraine to continue his calendar and so she did. Between her calendar for 2020 and 2021,
she has raised almost €8,000 for St Joseph's Hospital, Castletownbere and Cancer Connect, two charities that were close to John's heart. "From experience, it is important that the photographs for each month of the year in the calendar need to illustrate that month," Lorraine said. "So, together with the Parents Council, we decided to give the students a different theme every month this school year from December to May for the calendar next year. The Transition Years helped me to pick the themes to give to the students." The students are given two themes every month such as 'sparkle', 'water', 'frost', 'winter landscape', 'red and pink', 'living lockdown', 'springtime', 'green', 'clouds', 'flowers' etc. These are to encourage the students to reflect their own perception of the theme in a photograph, she explained. "During lockdown this was a great task for us to get us out and about in the fresh air and be in nature. It is great excitement to get the themes every month," added student Jack Ryan Brain.
tours in National Park A proposal to organise guided walks of Killarney National Park, in Muckross and at Knockreer, has been referred to Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, and local National Parks and Wildlife Service management. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce said it would give visitors and locals a greater understanding of the history of the park and the flora and fauna that flourishes within its boundaries. Speaking during the course of a virtual meeting with Minister Noonan, Killarney Chamber President, Niall Kelleher, said preliminary indicative numbers suggest that in the region of 2.3 million people visit the park on an annual basis and that would suggest that there is
a huge opening for guided tours. “This number will only increase as visitors return to Killarney once restrictions are lifted. Education is key to people understanding our unique eco system,” he said. Meanwhile, Chamber Executive member, Padraig Treacy, has asked Minister Noonan and his management team to facilitate a tasteful and cultural Christmas event in Killarney House and Gardens in December. “Like the rest of the country, Killarney and Kerry needs a positive outlook and, hopefully, the later part of the year will see an end of COVID-19 restrictions,” Mr Treacy said. “A nice Christmas event in keeping with the surroundings of Killarney House could be a wonderful collaboration between the NPWS and the town.”

Call for bicycle stands at graveyards | By Michelle Crean A Kerry county councillor has called for the addition of 'Bicycle Parking Bays' at public graveyards across the county and in particular, at the new Killarney Burial Ground and at Aghadoe.

MS group seek funding support
MS South Kerry - who are continuing to operate their vital services for members - have launched a fundraiser to help alleviate costs. | By Michelle Crean Unable to hold their usual fundraisers such as the famous Busking Day, Flag Day and Old Kenmare Walk due to the impact of COVID-19 - they opted instead to set up a GoFundMe page and have launched a virtual '100k in May' with a €3,000 goal. The impact of Coronavirus has been unimaginable for all charities across the board in 2020 and 2021 including those supporting people with Multiple Sclerosis, explained Jillian O'Sullivan from the local branch. "Our branch members have ever changing needs regarding their mobility aids and lifestyle. We want to be able to support them in every way we can." She added that all exercise and physio classes have moved online. "We are currently holding five classes per week catering for different levels of mobilities at a cost of €50 per class. With the rollout of vaccines, additional services will be coming back online but
without fundraising the branch will not be able to support our members such as one to one therapies including reflexology, massage and chiropody. We work with Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) and Home Instead to provide further support to members, again fundraising is needed for these services." For information about how to get involved in this fundraiser email mssouthkerry@gmail.com. "If you would like to get involved, please support us through GoFundMe: 100K in May for MS South Kerry or mysplink.com/msireland/southkerrybranch." Those who may need support can contact Community Welfare Officer Siobhan Lynch who is based in Killarney, the MS Society, Southern Regional Office, North Quay House, Pope’s Quay, Cork. At Monday's Ordinary Meeting of Kerry County Council Cllr Michael Gleeson said that "seeing bicycles thrown against railings, fences and at entrance gates is unbecoming and unsightly". "We should ensure that the ambience of every graveyard reflects our respect for our forebearers," he said. "The Council deserves great credit for the efforts over recent years to improve the appearance of many graveyards and I thank all who are involved and who continue to be involved. It is however very disconcerting and it's undignified and it's disrespectful to see bi-
cycles thrown up against walls and the gates, and railing along graveyards." He added that it's "also dangerous for other visitors who come to show their respect". At the new graveyard and columbarium, he added that the car parking facilities there "are state-of-the-art" but "unfortunately bicycle stands were forgotten". "At this time when great efforts are taking place to promote and advance cycling, we should over a number of years provide safe and secure parking stands at our public graveyards. I further propose that we would write to the Regional Manager of the NPWS asking that such a stand would be provided at Muckross Abbey." In their reply, the Council said that "this proposal will be looked at in the context of available resources within the burial grounds budget and potential national funding streams that may be available".
Plans in the pipeline for a national conference Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has called on Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, to support a national active volunteerism conference and have put forward Killarney as a potential host venue. Chamber President Niall Kelleher said such an event would provide an opportunity to promote volunteerism, not only in National Parks but in communities throughout the country. It could be of enormous benefit to the work of mountain meitheal groups in Killarney and in Wicklow as well as assisting with projects undertaken by Tidy Towns committees
throughout the entire country. The intention would be to attract high-quality speakers to promote education and generate discussion on biodiversity, sustainability and the ecology of the National Parks. “We feel that educating our members and our community can bring significant long-term benefits to our parks and ensure their long-term integrity and success,” President Kelleher said. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce offered to provide a venue and support accommodation for key speakers and to assist with the organisation of the event once it is safe to do so post pandemic.

Former facility ideal location for respite centre A former mental health facility which is lying idle in Ballydribeen since it closed in 2018 would be the ideal location for day and respite care. | By Michelle Crean At Monday's Kerry County Council online meeting, Cllr Cronin made a request that the Council contact the HSE to make the empty buildings in Cluain Fhionnain available for day care and respite care to disability organisations such as Kerry Parents and Friends Association "which could cater for the greater Killarney/South Kerry area". Presently, he explained, the facility near Killarney Celtic and Legion GAA Club, "up until recently had long-term residents".
Those residents have been moved out in to other residential areas, he explained, and that the empty building could be used for such a respite service. The buildings have "been maintained" and "are in good condition". He asked for the support of the councillors who are members of the HSE Regional Health Forum to raise a motion to try and "force the issue with the HSE for the benefit of local people", and that a request be sent to the HSE from the Council.
PROTEST: ‘Legalise Cannabis Ireland – Kerry’ held two separate demonstrations in Killarney on Tuesday to mark World Cannabis Day. Photo: Sean Moriarty
Demonstrators call for legalisation of cannabis | By Sean Moriarty A group calling itself ‘Legalise Cannabis Ireland – Kerry’ held two separate demonstrations in Killarney on Tuesday to mark World Cannabis Day. The group are calling for the legalisation of the drug – for medicinal reasons - and these were the first such protests to take place in Kerry. The group of about 20 met at the rear of Killarney Court House at a time when several high-profile cases were being heard. They then marched through the streets of Killarney – in a socially distanced man-
ner - and held a second protest outside Knockreer Cottage in Killarney National Park. The event was organised by Countess Road man Joseph Williams who says the drug has medicinal values and that because it is illegal it fuels the black market. Williams had pre-informed Killarney Gardai of the protest. “You don’t see dealers in back alleys selling alcohol because that is a legally controlled drug. It is medically proven to ease chronic pain, anxiety and other illnesses,” Joseph told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have written to the Minster for Health, and we are getting no response. Taking to the streets was a last resort.”
Lough Lein walking loop St Mary of the Angels campaign goes national a priority for Chamber The development of the Lough Lein Looped Walk is a key priority for Kerry County Council and the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. That is according to Killarney Mayor Cllr Brendan Cronin who attended an online meeting between the Chamber and the National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) this week. The mayor praised the efforts of the NPWS is recent months after the body completed several projects in the Killarney area. This included the development of the Tomies road and car park, the resurfacing of the road from Muckross Boat-
house to Bricín Bridge, the remedial works on the Cardiac Steps, the resurfacing of the road to the upper Torc car park, the resurfacing of parking facilities at Dinis, Torc and Ladies’ View and the repair works to the Mass path from Gearhameen to Derrycunnihy. The Lough Lein Loop is the next step after the NPWS reinstated funding to levels which had been in place in 2009. “We are seeking the minister’s support in the delivery of this project,” Cllr Cronin said. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, through President Niall Kelleher thanked the local NPWS management for the improvement works that have been carried out in the park.
| By Sean Moriarty The campaign to stop the potential sale of much-loved care facility St Mary of the Angels has attracted the support of the five elected Kerry TDs. There has been widespread local concerns – as reported in last week’s Killarney Advertiser – that the care facility could be sold as mental health service providers St John of Gods face debts of €32.5 million. “We have support from all five TDs and our next step is to set up a meeting with Anne Rabbitte [the Minister for Disability],” St Mary of the Angels Parents and Relatives Association chairman Jack Fitzpatrick told Killarney Advertiser.
St Mary of the Angels has been run by St John of Gods since the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood Religious Order handed over the facility in 2005. The farm was originally donated to the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood Religious Order by the Doyle family in the 1960s after their only daughter joined the Order. St John of Gods revealed earlier this month that it faces massive debts and that it may have to sell some of its assets. St Mary of the Angels Parents and Relatives Association fear that the facility will be sold to offset these debts and that the service, which has supported Kerry people since 1953, will be lost forever.

The beginning of the vaccine rollout process by age at the Killarney Vaccination Centre began yesterday (Thursday) for people who have registered online or by phone. | By Michelle Crean It's the first time that the centre, located at Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, has been used to vaccinate people who have registered in this way. Vaccinations at the centres in Killarney and MTU in Tralee is by appointment only, and only people who have received a confirmed appointment from the HSE should attend and should bring photo ID and details of their PPS number. Walk-in's cannot be facilitated. Michael Fitzgerald, the Chief Officer of Cork Kerry Community Healthcare,
thanked all the staff involved in all stages of getting the centres set up and ready to schedule appointments. “This has been a considerable undertaking, from planning to fit-out, from training to scheduling. Staff at both centres will be delighted to see Kerry people from the age-group 65 to 69 arriving for their appointments. I can reassure everyone with an appointment that staff at both centres will give you a warm welcome and will guide you through the entire vaccination process.” Registration is still open for anyone aged 65 to 69 at hse.ie and on 1850 24 1850

Walk-in COVID-19 test centre opens in Tralee | By Michelle Crean

The centre in Ballymullen Barracks is offering COVID-19 tests for one week, ending on April 27. On weekdays and Saturday the appointment-free testing for people who are symptom-free will run from 9.30am to midday and from 2pm to 5pm; and on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm. The short term service will operate alongside the existing test centre whereby GPs refer those with symptoms, and close contacts of a confirmed case, for their COVID-19 test. Walk-in test centres of this kind have opened in a number of locations around the country in recent weeks. “Thankfully, the level of COVID-19 in Tralee and the surrounding regions remains comparatively low," Dr Anne Sheahan, acting Director of Public
Health (HSE South) said. "The finding from this additional testing should give us an indication of what the level of infection is in the area. I encourage anyone in the region to take up this opportunity for testing as it will help us to contain the small number of cases of COVID-19 in the region.” You should use this free, walk-in COVID-19 testing service if you: - are aged 16 years and over - do not have symptoms of COVID-19 but would like to be tested - have not tested positive for COVID-19 in the last six months - Remember, it’s one test per person. You must bring photo identification with you and provide a mobile telephone number to be contacted with your results. Social distancing measures will apply as people attend for testing. If the waiting times are too long, you are welcome to return at another time or day.

Sanctuary Runners plan ambitious diverse relay team The Kerry Sanctuary Runners group's in Killarney, Tralee and Kenmare, who use running, jogging and walking to bring together asylum seekers, refugees and wider Irish society, are calling on the people of Kerry to help them with an ambitious bid to build the world’s most diverse relay team. And on June 6, they, along with Sanctuary Runners in Ireland and across the world, will don their iconic blue running tops to run in the virtual Cork City Marathon for the ‘Light at the end of the Tunnel’ event. While some will take on the full or half marathon distance, the majority will run, jog, walk or crawl a leg of the relay – just over eight kilometres in distance. Pauline Dennigan from Tralee Sanctuary Runners is hoping that people in Kerry can do their bit to help an initiative which has been pivotal in breaking down barriers between those in Direct Provision and wider society over the last three years. “There are now 26 Sanctuary Runner groups across Ireland with well over 3,000 regular participants - about a quarter of those being people currently living in Direct Provision and the rest from wider Irish society," she said. "As our group here in Kerry grows we really want to throw out a warm welcome for everybody to join us. There is no fundraising involved and while for now we are running, jogging and walking virtually we hope to be able to come together in small pods at least in the weeks to come.”
An impact study carried out by the Sanctuary Runners in 2020 found that 82 percent of those in Direct Provision who participated with the local Sanctuary Runner groups felt the evolving experience made them feel more welcome. And 42 percent of Sanctuary Runners not living in Direct Provision said the experience was the first in their lives where they’d got to know someone seeking asylum and interact on an equal footing. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously,” Pauline said. "The running is just a vehicle for conversation, friendship and respect. We run a little, we laugh a lot.” The Sanctuary Runners was named as one of the leading solidarity-through-sport initiatives in the European Union by the European Commission in 2019. Focusing on ‘solidarity’ rather than ‘charity’ its only ask of members is their time. Organisers are hoping running clubs, students, community groups and companies in the local area will support the initiative. Airport feels "confident for the future" after receiving €1.7m Government funding of €1,718,685 has been allocated to Kerry Airport under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025. The news was this week welcomed by Kerry Airport Ireland CEO John Mulhern. “The last year has been an unprecedented chapter of great struggle for Kerry Airport however despite it all we are confident of the future as we continue to receive the omnipresent support of Government and the Department of Transport," he said. He added that the announcement "of record capital funding is yet another example of how this Government ensures we will have the assets and capability to
maintain and continue to build a safe, secure and more environmentally-conscious platform towards recovery". “Our most sincere thanks to Minister Eamon Ryan, Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton and all of the team in the Department of Transport. Recognition also for Minister Norma Foley and Brendan Griffin TD, our county’s representatives in Government, and all our elected officials for their continued support. Undoubtedly we will need to wrestle through for a time, however record vaccination rates and funding such as this pave the way to unfettered travel that we all long for again.”
Proposed road closure between Rathmore and Barraduff | By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council is proposing to temporarily close the N72 Mallow Road between Barraduff and Rathmore as part of the on-going works at the area known locally as Stagmount Bends. The local authority wants to close the road to all traffic from 8am on Monday May 17 until 5pm on Monday May 31.
“The proposed road closure will also expediate the project programme,” said a Council statement. The proposed diversion will add considerable mileage for motorists who travel between Mallow and Killarney. Stagmount Bends are situated between Barraduff and Rathmore so the only viable alternative route is via a Millstreet and Macroom in Cork. This route will be clearly signposted and can be viewed on www.kerrycoco.ie.

Ditching the school uniform raises €1,300
By giving up their uniform and adapting to a more casual look for the day has raised €1,300 for two Kerry charities. | By Michelle Crean Students from St Brendan's College took part in their Young Social Innovators Speakout Week last week but the big finish was on Friday when all students clubbed together for the 'Different Clubs, Same Struggles' event. And that one small change to the dress code meant a big cheque to help Pieta House and Nathan's Walk. "On Tuesday morning, the team prepared an activity for the whole school to take part in," Fifth Year student Kacper Bogalecki told the Killarney Advertiser. "During 'Tutor Time', students were shown the video, 'Sem Against Stigma' made by the YSI group and students across all year groups discussed it in detail. They would talk about the supports available to people who may be going through a tough time, the impact the video had on them, and their own experiences around mental health," he said. "Then, our YSI group led a social media campaign using their Instagram page, 'Sem Against Stigma'. They contacted TDs, local businesses, GAA players like Seanie O'Shea, David Moran as well as
other notable figures," he said. "On Friday was our 'Different Clubs, Same Struggles' fundraiser. Moved by the work of Pieta House and the importance of Nathan's Walk, we asked each student and member of staff to bring in a €2 donation and wear a jersey or colours which represent them. The support which we received was enormous; everyone was wearing their club jersey we raised approximately €1,300. We were thrilled with this result." "The class were extremely happy to hear that we raised over €1,300 for the charities,” Tom Knoblauch from the TY YSI Group, said. “We realised that although COVID-19 has been tough on everyone, it is very tough for charities to fundraise, and get vital funds to help people. We decided to pick a charity that we felt would help to support young people going through tough times. The class agreed to fundraise for both Pieta House, and Nathan's Walk Killarney. As well as using the jersey day to fundraise, we also used it to raise awareness about the mental health in teenagers, and how important it is to talk to others."
Emma McGuire from Douglas was travelling to Tralee with a friend on March 8 last year when the accident happened. She has no recollection of the crash and suffered serious injuries. The 22-year-old was flown by the Irish Community Air Ambulance (ICAA) to Cork University Hospital (CUH) in a critical condition. Her spleen burst, she had to be resuscitated at the hospital and was given 14 units of blood in total. Emma underwent emergency surgery that night to remove her spleen and the following day had further surgery on her femur and ankle. Emma also underwent surgery at Tallaght University Hospital for a fractured pelvis
before returning to CUH. It was June before Emma finally returned home. Emma said the last thing she remembers before the crash is coming to the roundabout in Killarney. Her next memory is waking up in hospital more than 24 hours later. “I’m so grateful to them, I’m so lucky that there was something or someone looking out for me that day,” she said. In the first three months of this year the Irish Community Air Ambulance was tasked with 29 different incidents in Kerry. The Irish Community Air Ambulance, formerly Irish Community Rapid Response, based in Rathcoole in County Cork, works in tandem with the National Ambulance Service (NAS) to provide both paramedic support and transport to hospital for seriously ill patients. It does not receive any Government funding and relies totally on donations and charity efforts from members of the public.
THANKFUL: Emma McGuire has praised the efforts of the Irish Community Air Ambulance following a horrific car crash in Killarney last year.
Job losses as Killarney's Carphone Warehouse shuts its doors The Killarney branch of Carphone Warehouse shut its doors on Tuesday resulting in job losses for the town after parent company Dixon’s Carphone closed its entire Irish branch network. A total of 80 branches closed at short
notice, including the Killarney store in Deerpark, resulting in the loss of 486 jobs nationwide. Mobile phone customers who paid for contracts with the major networks through Carphone Warehouse should not see any change in services the company has confirmed.
"Customers are changing the way they buy mobile devices and connectivity, replacing their handsets less often and buying them separately or as part of more flexible bundles. Although these changes in behaviour were anticipated, they were expected to occur over a longer period of time. However, the change in shopping
behaviours has been accelerated by the pandemic,” said a company statement. Customers will not lose connection to their chosen network and SIM cards will continue to work as normal. Queries relating to network connection and SIM cards can be directed to the service provider.

Early detection is key for bowel cancer | By Michelle Crean April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and the message from the health professionals is to get checked. Women and men in Ireland aged 60-69 years are being asked if they receive a letter from BowelScreen to take up the appointment. And for those aged younger who may experience changes to bowel habits to get checked early as a preventative measure. Eddie Myers from Fossa is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner at University Hospital Kerry who works in Gastroentrology. He performs around 600 colonoscopies each year which involves sedating patients and removing pre-cancers polyps from their colons. He finds lots of polyps (pre-cancers) but only about 5% are cancer, so most people receive a normal result. In Ireland, bowel (colon, rectal or colorectal) cancer is the third most common of all cancers in men and the fourth most common in women, and about 2,800 people get diagnosed with it every year. “If you get a letter for BowelScreen take it up," Eddie explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "They'll send you a kit and you do a sample at home and send it back to the lab." For anyone outside of this particular age category he is advising that you make an appointment as

soon as you notice any bowel changes such as constipation, diarrhea or blood. "There can be an awful perception around the issue of getting a bowel screening. However, in the vast majority we find nothing but at least you've checked it. If we get an early cancer we can treat it, it's almost one hundred percent success rate." BowelScreen is free to all women and men in Ireland aged 60-69 years. The BowelScreen programme has detected 930 bowel cancers since 2012. Perhaps, more importantly, the programme has detected over 25,000 pre-cancers. You can check if you are on the register by phoning 1800 454555 or visit www. bowelscreen.ie for more information.
There could be way more entries than ever before as this year's Ring of Kerry Cycle is now open to even more people. Continued COVID restrictions means that there'll be no physical Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle for a second year running - but organisers have come up with a new and novel event. As the '170km My Way' event is now virtual participants can take on the challenge themselves in their own localities cycling the equivalent of the Ring of Kerry over 30 days. It can be done in a day, over a week or a month on your own doorstep as it were. As June 3 is World Bike Day, this is the proposed start day with a completion date of July 3 - the date that would coincide with the actual cycle if it were on this year. "It's a consolation event due to COVID," Cathal Walshe from the organising committee told the Killarney Advertiser. "We've had, in the past, 21 countries tak-
ing part. This now facilitates people in their own area and they have 30 days to complete it so don't have to train." Registration for the event will open on May 1 on the ringofkerrycycle.ie website with a registration fee of €35 plus handling fees and it'll include a top quality T-Shirt with 170km printed on the front and back and €15 for your chosen charity. This year's charities include Ard Churam in Listowel, Down Syndrome Kerry, St Francis Special School, Cunamh Iveragh, Breakthrough Cancer Research, Irish Heart Foundation, Alzheimer's Society Ireland together with the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. "Charities are very badly hit by COVID and this is a way of supporting them. The committee would like everyone to get up on their bikes during the month of June and cycle the distance in your own area for your chosen charity," he said. "All charities will have their own iDonate page and cyclists can set up an iDonate page themselves. This event should also appeal to the corporate sector getting their employees involved for charity."

The new novel from the Pulitzer Prize-winning, Man Booker Prize-shortlisted author: a haunting portrait of a woman, her decisions, her conversations, her solitariness, in a beautiful and lonely Italian city. The woman moves through the city, her city, on her own. She moves along its bright pavements; she passes over its bridges, through its shops and pools and bars. She slows her pace to watch a couple fighting, to take in the sight of an old woman in a waiting room; pauses to drink her coffee in a shaded square. Sometimes her steps take her to her grieving mother, sealed off in her own solitude. Sometimes they take her to the station, where the trains can spirit her away for a short while. But in the arc of a year, as one season gives way to the next, transformation awaits. One day at the sea, both overwhelmed and replenished by the sun's vital heat, her perspective will
change forever. A rare work of fiction, 'Whereabouts' - first written in Italian and then translated by the author herself - brims with the impulse to cross barriers. By grafting herself onto a new literary language, Lahiri has pushed herself to a new level of artistic achievement.

Planting in pots, window boxes and baskets
Despite the cold wind and even colder evenings, summer bedding plants are available everywhere. I think that we are all looking forward to the optimism of summer, the promise of long warm days, filled with sunshine and bright colours. Many of us are giving up the hope that we will see foreign soil this year, and I feel that everyone is making the most of what we have on our doorsteps, patios, decking, and porches. Pots are at the centre of these areas and are being given extra attention. There are many first time pot fillers out there looking for advice, so I thought I would write this article ahead of time. Firstly, pots, window boxes and baskets should not be put into their final position until all risk of frost is gone. That said, they can be planted up as plants arrive. Pots should be filled with a good quality compost. Many composts are peat free, and these are not necessarily bad, they just have a very different texture to what we are used to here in Ireland. However, peat is being conserved so we must accept the change and work with it. I have tried several of these composts and have noticed that many absorb water slowly and then tend to dry out quickly. If you cannot find one with John Innes in it, mix four parts compost with one part (bagged and screened) topsoil and one part sand. This will give you improved drainage, better water absorption and increased water retention. Adding hydroleca, (light, puffed clay pebbles, formed by heating clay
granules until they have a smooth exterior but a honeycomb interior which absorbs water and releases it slowly), also helps the consistency. Hydroleca is also excellent as a top dressing on pots. Putting stones in the bottom of the pot is an option for drainage, but there are very divided opinions on this, and I myself never do it. I advise mixing a slow release fertiliser into your compost, saving you having to feed every few weeks. Baskets should be lined with a fibre mat and inside that a piece of plastic, such as that cut from an empty compost bag. Baskets dry out extremely quickly as they are exposed to wind and sun on all sides, and adding that piece of plastic slows down the drying out a little. The reason I put it in really is to stop the water running right through and out of the basket when watering. Always try to get the biggest size basket your bracket and wall or fence can support, the more soil the better! Baskets and window boxes benefit greatly from added moisture retaining gel – these are small crystals which swell up with water, releasing the moisture as the compost dries out. I do not put this into pots myself as too much wetness can cause roots to start rotting, however in the case of baskets and window boxes there is little chance of this as they are rarely overwatered. Next week we will talk about how to fill our pots!
top of the range laptop
A Killarney student was ecstatic to learn this week that he had won a top of the range Dell laptop. VTOS learner Hussein Sarwar from Killarney won the laptop as part of the Fast Track to IT (FIT) Laptop Giveaway Competition, who have been collaborating with Kerry College for several years providing training and employment supports in the form of CV Workshops, Interview Skills, Industry Specific Mock Interviews, LinkedIn workshops. His career preparation teacher has highlighted the tremendous benefit this laptop will be for Hussein’s progression and continued interest in his educational development. “I was shocked when I received the laptop," Hussein said. "I had to check my email and bank account to make sure I had not bought anything, until I got a call from Marie from FIT who told me I had won. I was very happy.” The giveaway came about as the COVID pandemic has been particularly tough on learners who don’t have access to up-to-date technology or broadband to connect to the online learning and tuition that was necessary over the past 12 months. As a means of goodwill and also in response to the challenge of studying from home, FIT ran a national laptop competition. In all there were four lucky Kerry College students chosen to receive top of the range Dell laptops. The others

Are you ready to get back on the field again? We hear a lot about returning to sport - the dangers for players and how there is a heightened risk of injury - but do we know why or how this can be avoided? Let’s not forget that footballers have been living through this pandemic too. There has been widespread disruption to the normal flow of a club/county season over the past 18 months. When I saw the GAA’s plan recently of how they planned to run off the intercounty season I shuddered at the haste players were being put into action. Training is a stress, so too is playing a game, albeit a somewhat heightened stress. The role of a strength and conditioning coach is to ensure the athlete has adequate reserves to contend with these stressors. A handful of weeks is not adequate time to build up the resiliency needed for playing contact sport, hence the reason some counties tried to break rules and get back early.
SO, WHY IS THERE A HIGHER RISK OF INJURY POST COVID?
To over-simplify things, injuries occur where the applied force is greater than tissue tolerance. Think of sprinting and hamstring strains; the force being applied through the muscle is greater than the tolerance built up in that muscle prior to that sprint. So how do we ensure that we avoid this? We gradually apply stress to the muscle to build tolerance and capacity. So for a footballer looking at sprinting we gradually increase the speed and/or distance of the sprints, until we reach a level just above where it will be required in a game situation to ensure when we have to sprint for that ball in a game, we have the tolerance to withstand what is being asked of our body. If we ask something of the body that isn’t there or hasn’t been trained for, that’s when the sniper appears up in the stands and takes aim at that hamstring. So, footballers, rugby players, runners, and everyone who takes competing somewhat seriously, how do we avoid this? I’m a firm believer that strength and conditioning should supplement the training of the actual sport and just fill in the holes of what physically might be missing from the sport itself. Strength and

Parent’s Leave Question: I am due to have a baby in three months and have arranged to take Maternity Leave. Am I entitled to any more paid leave to look after the baby? ANSWER: Parent’s Leave is a statutory entitlement for parents that allows each parent five weeks paid leave for a child born or adopted on or after November 1, 2019. It aims to let working parents spend more time with their child. It must be taken within two years of the birth of a child or in the case of adoption, from the date of placement of the child. If you have enough PRSI contributions, you get a weekly Parent’s Benefit
payment of €245 from the Department of Social Protection during Parent’s Leave. You can take Parent’s Leave in one fiveweek block or in five one-week periods. You can visit citizensinformation.ie to find more about Parent’s Leave. Parent’s Leave is different to Parental Leave. Parental Leave is unpaid and can be taken up until the child’s 12th birthday.

conditioning coaches aren’t magicians, if the capability in the sport isn’t there, simply training in the gym won’t make you any better. Now players should be taking out a ball and practicing the skills in a simple setting. Add to this some fitness work that mimics the demands of the game you are playing. Simply hitting the footpaths for 10 kilometres isn’t going to look the same as what you will be doing when the first ball of the season is thrown in. As with everything coming out of this pandemic, there is no straight line to success or normalcy, but athletes and coaches must take a day by day approach ensuring that we are not overcooking ourselves too early, but having a strategic, calculated plan to getting back to performance with patience and intelligence in what we do to the foremost in our minds. WEDDING OF THE WEEK

"It was the wedding we always wanted"
A relaxing intimate wedding was the perfect day for one couple who exchanged their vows on April 7. Bride Dana O'Brien and groom Denis O'Sullivan from Firies stood in front of five of their most treasured loved ones as they said "I do" in Killarney Registry Office. And there was no big party afterwards with the couple instead opting to go home for champagne and cake. The reception which was to be held at a hotel couldn't go ahead because of COVID, but Dana said their intimate gathering was perfect in every way. The couple were married at 12pm and Dana's daughter Catrice Lyne (23) and
her boyfriend TJ Cronin were witnesses. Dana's parents Michael and Irene O'Brien and Denis' mom Helen also watched on as they tied the knot. Afterwards it was off to Aghadoe, Killarney Golf Club and Molls Gap with photographer Dylan Clifford. Then it was home for the cake and champagne with their guests. Music featured as TJ is a dab hand at the guitar and many Beatles songs were also played. "We stuck to every restriction," Dana told the Killarney Advertiser. "It was a lovely relaxed day and the weather was good which helped. We were always planning a small wedding anyway so it was the wedding we always wanted."

for a wide range of positions for its new Tralee shop - from those interested in beginning a career in butchery and customer service right through to experienced butchers. “Our team is so proud to become part of this historic market town rich with a vibrant heritage and look forward to welcoming customers old and new to our new home in Tralee," CEO Pat Whelan said. "We are currently recruiting for a wide range of positions from apprentice to experienced butcher, as well as customer service personnel." Dunnes Stores North Circular Road Store Manager, Anne Marie O’Hara, is looking
forward to introducing his customers to the award winning artisan butcher. "It’s a very exciting time for Dunnes Stores in Tralee with the introduction of the new state-of-the-art Food Hall. Already anticipation is building with customers as well as the team here. We know that the James Whelan Butcher shop will be such a great addition to our food offering, together with all of the other leading artisan food producers who will be calling Tralee and Kerry home in the very near future." A woman was left feeling very frightened as a strange animal appeared to be looking at her from a lilac tree outside her house - only to find out it was a croissant! The incident happened in Krakow, Poland earlier this week when the woman called animal control thinking it was an iguana. Afraid it would enter her home after being in the tree for two days she said she was too scared to open her windows. "It's brown, it's sitting on a tree," she told the rescuers. However, according to a Facebook post by the Krakow Animal Welfare Society, police investigated the "incident" only to discover that it was in fact a piece of sweet bread. “There are people willing to get rid of any animal that causes some trouble. Or just get bored,” the Facebook post said. “It’s better to check and be pleasantly disappointed.”
Trump hints at 2024 return Donald Trump has given his strongest hint yet that he will contest the 2024 US Presidential election. By then Trump will be 77-yearsold - one year younger than current president Joe Biden who was 78 when he took office in January and will be 82 by the time of the next election in 2024. Trump himself held the previous
record. He was 70 when he took office and 74 by the end of his term. Ronald Reagan was 69-years-old when he was first elected and ended his double term at 77 years of age. "I am looking at it very seriously, beyond seriously," Trump told Fox News Channel earlier this week. "From a legal standpoint, I don't want to really talk about it
yet, it's a little too soon." Two years ago and ahead of the election Trump mocked Biden labelling him too old to hold office. “I would never say anyone is too old. I know they are all making me look very young both in terms of age and I think in terms of energy," Trump said in April 2019 when he learned that Biden was to be his election rival.

"Superhero" railway worker saves child's life A young child was seconds from death when a hero railway worker dramatically came to his rescue in India this week.
Fires engulf Cape Town Three 17-storey residential buildings had to be evacuated and a university library housing a unique collection of African archives have been destroyed after fires engulfed Cape Town in South Africa. The blaze, which began on the slopes of Devil's Peak on Sunday, has destroyed private homes, historical structures such as the Mostert's Hill windmill built in 1796, and the Cecil Rhodes Memorial Restaurant. University of Cape Town students also had to be evacuated as flames set several campus buildings ablaze. Helicopters worked non-stop dropping water on threatened areas. Up to 250 exhausted firefighters spent days trying to bring it under control, and the cause is still under investigation. One suspect was taken into custody, city official Alderman JP Smith said.
In a viral video doing the rounds online, the worker was praised as a "superhero" as he dashed to grab the six-year-old who had fallen off the platform at Vangani Station as the train inched closer. In what was a miracle reaction, the man who is named as 30-year-old Mayur Shelke, put himself front and centre of imminent death as he pulled the boy up and successfully managed to jump on to the platform as the train roared past. The boy was with his partially sighted mother, about 70km east of Mumbai, when he got too close to the edge and fell down. It was all captured on CCTV as Mayur was alerted by cries for help from the mother and immediately started running along the track. He said that he didn't think twice - just
acted on instinct to save the child's life. "I saw the kid falling and the train speeding towards him," Mr Shelke was quoted as saying by the Mid-Day newspaper. "There was no chance he would have lived had I not intervened. There was no time to think at all, I was determined to save him." Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said he would be rewarded for "motivating humanity with his work".
US issues travel ban to 80 percent of countries The US Department of State has issued a warning to US citizens to stay at home and not to travel overseas as COVID-19 continues to pose "unprecedented risks”. Officials have said that two firefighters sustained burns and were admitted to hospital. “It’s a massive wind that’s blowing, and that is actually fuelling the fire to spread in each and every direction,” Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato said.
It issued the warning on Monday advising that travel to 80 percent of countries worldwide should not be undertaken. The department stopped short of issuing a travel ban to Ireland. "The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose unprecedented risks to travellers.
In light of those risks, the department of State strongly recommends US citizens reconsider all travel abroad,'' a statement from the department said. Passengers arriving from the US are subject to the Irish quarantine rules and would have to stay in a pre-approved hotels for at least two weeks. The Irish Government is increasing its list of approved hotels to cope with the quarantine demand and has now included the Red Cow Inn in Dublin to the list.
Survey to help with conservation of rare bird Members of the public are being asked to take part in a national survey to help with the conservation of a rare bird. The Chough is a scarce bird and fewer than 850 breeding pairs live along the coastline. They are very much a bird associated with western Atlantic coastal grasslands. A member of the crow family, Choughs are true invertebrate specialists with a striking and delicate decurved red bill and matching red legs designed to probe the top layer of short coastal grasses for insects.
From April to July 2021 KRC Ecological and ALC Nature will be running a national survey of these birds on behalf of National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) all around the Irish coastline. Chough also have a buoyant, butterfly-like flight and profile, shiny black plumage and a distinctive high pitched ‘cheouw’ call. “We are very pleased to be undertaking a national assessment of these characterful birds this year," Dr Sinéad Cummins, the scientist in NPWS Science Biodiversity Section leading the project said. "The data gathered is very important to ensure that Ireland can meet its interna-
tional obligations to protect and enhance the small and precious population of Chough around the Atlantic coastline of Ireland.” In some areas Chough nest inland, away from the coast on inland cliffs, in farm buildings, bridges and abandoned houses. The survey team would be very keen to hear about any observations people may have of these birds, especially relating to birds nesting in areas away from the coast. Observations can be reported at bit.ly/ChoughSurvey21, email choughsurvey@gmail.com or call the 089 278 5603.

Action plan maps out key Skincare after developments SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue
Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966
menopause Menopause can bring some noticeable changes to your skin and hair. As hormones change, your skin can become dry, slack and thin. Also, you may notice an increase in hair on your face and I recommend electrolysis for this. Jowls, slack skin and wrinkles are caused by a lose of collagen - about 30% at the beginning of change. Without collagen, skin loses firmness and begins to sag. Hydration is key for optimising skin plumpness and glow. A serum infused with hyaluronic acid will greatly increase this. For extra benefit wear a night cream for firming and restructuring. Sothys Detoxing Resurfacing Overnight Cream with vitamin C for brightening gives great results. Cleansing is an important skincare step because as you get older skin gets drier. The key is to apply a creamy formula that can hydrate your skin instead of using soaps or foaming gel cleanser
that strip the moisture away. Age spots can appear on the face, hands and chest, and they can look darker during menopause due to hormone levels changing. You can help prevent them by using SPF. If you already have them, fade them with exfoliating products that shed dead cells which can be dull and flaky. Toners can help even out skin colour. Collagen gives your skin its youthful plumpness and keeps your skin tight. Eating foods with antioxidants may help your skin stay stronger from the inside out. Look for brightly coloured fruits and vegetables in their natural form where possible. The CACI non-surgical facial gives great results for a jowl lift, and helps stimulate collagen and elastin production. For more information or advice please call Jill 064 6632966.
The much anticipated Action Plan for Apprenticeships launched by Ministers Simon Harris and Niall Collins this week outlines the key developments planned to improve access to, and participation in, apprenticeships in the next five years. The rationale behind this ambitious plan is evident in the tagline #apprenticeshipsforall. The plan seeks to double the number of apprentices to 10,000 a year and expand on the 60 apprenticeship options currently available to include training programmes in a broader range of disciplines. They include green areas such as wind turbine maintenance as well as more offerings in international financial services and technology and new courses including healthcare assistant, scaffolding, quantity surveying, quality control, farm management and many more. A key objective is to increase the attractiveness of apprenticeships to school leavers and to change the culture that currently exists, placing huge emphasis on progressing onto higher education even when it is not the preferred or a suitable option for the student. The plan also seeks to address the skills needs of an ever-changing world of work. Apprenticeship opportunities are to be significantly increased in the public sector bodies including local authorities and the Civil Service from 100 to 750. Supports for apprentices and employers Bursaries of up to €5,000 per annum will be made available to up to 100 apprentices each year from disadvantaged backgrounds. Support for employers who take on apprentices is also part of the plan. A grant of approximately €3,000 per annum will be available as well as extra financial support for employers who take on applicants from under-represented groups such as people with disabilities or asylum seekers. In apprenticeships where there is a predominant male or female take-up,
Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, and Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. She is also a Career Consultant. For details see www.mycareerplan.ie or follow MyCareerPlan on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
financial incentives will be made available to employers that take on people to redress that gender balance. The plan also seeks to simplify the application process by establishing a centralised portal where students can register their interest and/or apply for apprenticeships. Employers will also be able to advertise vacancies. A National Apprenticeship Office is to be set up to oversee the implementation of this ground-breaking plan which paves the way for a new vision for apprenticeship training for all backed up with practical steps to make it a reality. Full details of the plan can be accessed on www.gov. ie by searching Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021 - 2025, and on apprenticeships at www.apprenticeship.ie.

As we lovingly remember Daniel on his 1st Anniversary his wife Imelda, daughter Mary, brothers Johnny and Billy, sisters in law Breda and Phil, nieces Diane and Fiona, nephews David, Kevin, Sean, Patrick, Brendan and extended family wish to express our sincere gratitude to all those who sympathised and supported us whilst observing social distance following the sudden and tragic loss of Daniel as a result of a road traffic accident. Our heartfelt thanks to the following: To all our neighbours who were so kind and supportive. The First Responders and the ambulance service who worked tirelessly to save Daniel. To all the Gardai involved especially Garda Gillian Mac Eoin whose support was amazing, To Fr. Niall Howard who happened to arrive at the scene of accident, administered the Last Rites and was so compassionate. To Fr. Jim Lenihan for celebrating a very personal and special Requiem Mass live streamed, allowing our neighbours, friends, relatives worldwide to join us as only 10 were allowed attend the funeral due to the pandemic. To Deacon Thady O Connor, cousins Geraldine O Driscoll and Fidelis Foley for their beautiful music and singing at the Mass and graveside. To all our neighbours who formed a guard of honour outside our home as Daniel was being taken to the Cathedral for the funeral Mass, to his ESB colleagues outside the church after the Mass, to the Kilcummin GAA outside the graveyard, to all those who lined the roads from Cathedral to Old Kilcummin graveyard. It was a fitting tribute to Daniel as it was most important to him to always listen to the deaths on Radio Kerry, attend the funeral home, sympathise with the bereaved and to pray for the dead. To all those who phoned, sent text messages, condolences online sharing lovely thoughts and memories of Daniel. For all the beautiful sympathy cards, Mass cards, perpetual enrollments, letters of sympathy, floral tributes, food delivered all deeply appreciated. To funeral directors Mike and Mary O Shea, Gerard Fitzgerald for their extreme sensitivity and attention to detail and to the grave diggers for preparing the grave. Special thanks to Christy O Leary for all his hard work and support throughout the year. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually we hope that this acknowledgment will be accepted as a token of our appreciation, The Holy sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. We often sit and think of you And think of how you died To think you could not say goodbye Before you closed your eyes. The blow was hard, the shock severe To part with one we loved so dear Our loss is great, we’ll not complain But trust in God to meet again. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord And let the perpetual light shine upon him May he rest in Peace. Always remembered Imelda and Mary xxx First Anniversary Mass on Monday 26th April at 6.15pm In the Cathedral Live streamed.

Young athletes set for long-awaited return to sport On Monday, April 26, the sporting year begins in earnest for our young sportspeople as the Covid-19 restrictions prohibiting training are finally lifted. It has been a challenging four-month period away from the action but local clubs are now hopeful that a return to modified training will be a stepping stone towards normal service resuming in the not-too-distant future. Starting next week, coaches can hold non-contact training for pods of 15 outdoors. It might be some way short of the real thing but, at this stage, children, parents and mentors are grateful for any bit of sport they can get. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Tomás Griffin of Killarney Valley AC described the mood around the club as “very positive”. He also said he is confident that the experience of dealing with the training restrictions towards the end of 2020 will stand coaches in good stead this time around. “Everybody is very eager to get back – but also to get back in the right way and x
in an organised way. We were thrilled to be in our brand new facility last October, November and December, and we had a fantastic vibe going with huge numbers of kids turning up to training. That was also in a pod situation, so we have already experienced what we’ve got to be very good about over the next couple of months. “This week we’re working through all of our registered members who are under 18, seeing how we can split them up into their various age groups, and then, within those age groups, seeing how we can pod them. We then have to assign coaches to each of those pods. Safety is No. 1; getting everybody back safely and keeping them safe. From there we hope that the [Covid-19] numbers don’t spike and we can continue with organised training in a safe way, and plan towards organised competitions that Athletics Ireland have in the diary for all of our members.” Killarney RFC Minis Co-Ordinator Liam Murphy echoed Griffin’s sentiments with regards to safety, confirming that coaches, administrators, players and parents
at the rugby club are now well-versed when it comes the relevant safety measures that are in place. “We will be fairly regimented with the pods but it’s nothing that we haven’t done already. Last year it felt like we were doing something new and we were trying to get parents and kids to row in behind us, but the measures quickly became second nature. People are resilient and they cope with it. “Everyone is looking forward to getting back to some sort of normality. The youths from U14 to U18 will be kicking off next week and then the minis will get five weekends before the end of May. That will finish out the season really as the rugby calendar usually runs from September to April. Hopefully we’ll be able to hit the ground running then with camps over the summer. “Last year we finished in March and the season was gone then. This time around, I think people just want to get back playing rugby. The players, the coaches, everybody is mad to get out there. The lockdown has been hugely difficult for
the kids. I think they miss the social side of it as much as anything.” For his part, Paul Sherry, Chairman of Killarney Celtic, said everyone at the Derreen-based club was looking forward to the restart. “We’re pleased that we’re getting back. Everyone has been waiting for this for ages. We just have to get ourselves ready; we have a few webinars this week with the FAI and we need to get the word out there. But the mood is good. Everybody has been very good up to now and they have been very patient, but that patience has been wearing thin. I think that all the kids are anxious to get back on the field. “It has been hard for the children. Things probably got a bit easier as they returned to school and they were able to interact with their friends, but in terms of sport they have really had no outlet. The FAI had Soccer Sisters online over Easter and things like that but it’s no replacement for being out on the pitch. I think it has been a difficult time and the kids just want to get out playing again.”

If Kerry are to avenge last year’s shock defeat to near neighbours Cork, they will have to do it in the provincial decider after the two sides avoided each other in the draw for the Munster Senior Football Championship, which was made on Monday. The Kingdom will face Clare in the quarter-finals with the winners taking on the champions, Tipperary, in the last four. The Rebels, meanwhile, will take on the winners of Waterford and Limerick in the other semi-final. Dates and venues have yet to be decided but the provincial championships are set to begin on the weekend of June 26/27. Kerry will host The Banner, one would imagine in Killarney, in their championship opener. Remarkably, it will be their fifth time facing Clare in the past six seasons. (For comparison, Kerry haven’t played Waterford since 2013 or Limerick since 2011.) Remember: the 2021 championship will be straight knockout so the stakes will be high from Day 1. If Peter Keane’s men can navigate the first obstacle, a trip to Thurles awaits in the semi-final. This would be Kerry’s first encounter with Tipp in five years. Cork, who knocked Kerry out of last year’s championship with a stunning last-minute goal, will be favourites to reach the final and if Kerry do likewise, the Munster final will return to Killarney for the first time since 2017. Home advantage in the 2018 and 2019 deciders were owed to Cork follow-

ing the additional finals played in the Fitzgerald Stadium during the redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The old arrangement resumed in 2020 and it was Cork’s turn to host once again, though home advantage was diminished significantly as the match was played behind closed doors in line with Covid-19 guide-
lines. At this juncture a packed Fitzgerald Stadium for Cork v Kerry, if that fixture eventually comes to pass, seems unlikely this June. But, assuming that hospitality has reopened to some extent, the match could still provide a boost to the local economy. If the rules allow it, fans
Crowley calls it a day Peter Crowley has called time on his intercounty career after 10 years of service to the Kerry senior footballers. The 31-year-old’s departure was confirmed by Kerry GAA on Tuesday evening as the squad gathered to train collectively for the first time in 2021. The tough-tackling defender becomes the fourth Kerry player to retire this year, following in the footsteps of Shane Enright, Jonathan Lyne and Brian Kelly. “Peter Crowley will be missed particularly for his energy, determination and experience on the training field and in the dressing room,” Kerry manager Peter Keane said. “I’d like to wish Peter the best of luck and thank him for the commitment he has always shown to
the green and gold.” Kerry GAA echoed those sentiments, saying they “sincerely thank Peter Crowley for his enormous contribution to Kerry Football over the past 10 years and wish him the very best in the future”. Crowley’s club, Laune Rangers, congratulated their county star on a “great innings”, adding that they “look forward to many more years of Peter in the #gormagusbán of Laune Rangers!” A versatile back who operated across a variety of positions during his intercounty career, Crowley made his debut in 2011 and played at centre back on the All-Ireland winning team of 2014. He was named as an All-Star that year and continued to be an important figure for Kerry right up until his final season; in 2020 he made his return to the starting
line-up following a serious knee injury which he sustained in spring of 2019. Crowley earned a reputation as a strong and brave player during his intercounty career and a number of pundits have commented that his toughness will be missed by The Kingdom as they prepare for the upcoming season, which gets underway next month. The pharmacist from Killorglin will continue to line out for his club and his district, Mid Kerry, with whom he reached the Kerry Senior Football Championship final last year. would surely flock to Killarney to sample Munster Final fever, in whatever unusual form that may take in these pandemic-affected times. Kerry will not be counting their chickens just yet, however, especially after their unexpected and disastrous fall at the first hurdle in 2020. "I think the pressure will be on Kerry this year to perform,” former Kerry star Tomás Ó Sé told RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland immediately after the draw. “A lot of pressure came on Kerry after their performance against Cork last year so all eyes will be on them. Clare must be thinking what they have to do to avoid Kerry in the Munster Championship. Colm Collins' men always seem to get Kerry in the draw. "Cork have the easier side of the draw, but (Limerick manager) Billy Lee would definitely love a cut off Cork if they get over Waterford because of what Tipperary achieved last year. "Look, it's an interesting draw, it does point to a Kerry-Cork Final in Killarney and it's as good as a draw as you could have hoped for in terms of the challenges that lay ahead. I think all eyes will be on Kerry and the pressure will be on Kerry to deliver. Whether they can or not, time will tell."

I was lucky there was no social media at the time Former GAA President Seán Kelly speaks to Eamonn Fitzgerald about his role in opening up Croke Park to soccer and rugby in 2007
Rules 42 and 27 were the most contentious rules in the official guide of the GAA and both had very clear purposes. Rule 42 prohibited field games other than Gaelic football and hurling being played in GAA grounds. Soccer and rugby were seen as the enemy, the garrison games in direct competition with Gaelic games. The hierarchy in the GAA reflected the fear and, indeed, the hatred of its members countrywide towards soccer and rugby. Rule 42 did make provision for onceoff games not in direct competition with hurling and football to be played on GAA grounds. One I remember was an American football game played in Croke Park in 1999 between the American Navy and Notre Dame. This posed no threat to the GAA games, so it went ahead. One could see the logic of excluding soccer and rugby. The GAA has so many games for both genders, played in every parish in the country from juvenile right through to senior, and the logistics of accommodating soccer and rugby in your typical GAA field wouldn’t be realistic. If there were a clash of fixtures at the same time in the local GAA pitch, which would get preference? What pitch would be able to stand up to the wear and tear of the grounds, particularly when most of the soccer and rugby games are played in winter conditions? Who would maintain the pitch, where so much loving care, not to mind the expense, rested on the shoulders of the GAA club supporters? Also remember that Rule 27 (The Ban) took a long time before it was abolished in 1971. Move to Croke Park, the hallowed ground, where ardent nationalist GAA supporters, particularly (but not exclusively) from the six counties have not forgotten what happened there on Bloody Sunday 1920, when Croke Park became the bloodied field. And yet the day came when the Irish soccer and rugby teams played their international games in Croke Park. The man who made all that possible is Kil-
cummin’s Seán Kelly, who did so during his term as Uachtarán of the GAA from 2003 to 2006. I spoke with him recently about this and other matters and asked him why he fought so doggedly against fierce opposition within the officialdom of the GAA to the abolition of Rule 42, to overcome the odds stacked against him. I felt strongly that it was the right thing to do and I first raised the issue of making more use out of Croke Park when I was chairman of the Kerry County Board. It took 14 years to bring that dream to reality and I was realistic enough to know that some members and counties had fears, some justifiably so. I had to take these into consideration, but I felt that our games were thriving and should not be afraid of competition from rugby or soccer. We needed to open up Croke Park to soccer and rugby at that time, showing a generosity of spirit and ecumenism, and an opportunity to help ourselves while also helping our fellow Irish. For the overall good of Irish sport in a new emerging country, timing was everything. It was so difficult to even get it on the ‘clár’ for Congress and I was very disappointed that in Congress here in Killarney it was ruled out. That cast a huge damper on proceedings in what was an outstanding Congress overall. The timing was favourable with Lansdowne Road closed and no real venue for rugby and soccer internationals. We had a state-of-the-art pitch and full facilities to cater for 82,000 spectators in Croke Park, so why not provide the facilities for the Irish teams? When I took over as Uachtarán of the GAA in 2003 I deliberately made no mention in my address of plans to abolish Rule 42 and that was strategic. As expected the ‘No Surrender’ flag was raised by Ulster, particularly by Micheál Greenan, Chairman of the Ulster Council, who could not stomach the thought of the foreign enemy games desecrating the sacred soil of
Páirc an Chrócaigh. He branded you as traitor. Not surprisingly the Rebel County of Cork, and their beloved Michael Collins, opposed your mission, especially Christy Cooney. You stood out on a limb because you felt it was right, but you got a lot of stick for pushing your head above the parapet. I did get a lot of criticism from within some sectors of the GAA as you have outlined, with nasty letters and phone calls, some of which were very bitter and personal. Luckily for me there was no social media at that time, so I was spared the invective so easily delivered at present through Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram etc. I recall you saying in one of your speeches that you were taking Johnny Cash’s advice and that you would walk the line, but keep your eyes wide open all the time, especially for your enemies within the GAA. How did you negotiate with Bertie, Mary Harney and Charlie McCreevy? After all didn’t Bertie have his dream of Bertie’s Bowl, which would have blown your idea out of the water? In fairness to them they said that ultimately opening up Croke Park was a matter for the GAA itself. Bertie wanted to build that 80,000-seater stadium in Abbotstown and that would have been in direct competition with the GAA for big events such as concerts. The country could not afford an 80,000 stadium and an 82,000 one. A key man backing my proposal was Cahersiveen man Minister John O’Donoghue. He was so supportive and crucially for me I had access to him all the time and he could not have been more helpful. You had to work Congress strategically and were lauded by the press, typified by John Fogarty, (Ireland on Sunday) who said “Kelly leads sport out of the dark ages”. I was very aware of the sensitivities of the first occasion, so I ensured that rugby was first, a 32-county game, as distinct from 26-county soccer, which could be divisive. And also that Ireland’s
first rugby game would not be versus England. That took some negotiating with IRFU and FAI but it was agreed before I left office and handed over to my successor Nicky Brennan. So, mission accomplished. You got your way and Croke Park was to be opened up for soccer and rugby internationals. Take our readers back to those international match days in Croke Park. The first international played was France v Ireland (rugby) in their Six Nations on February 11, 2007. What were your feelings like in Croke Park that day? A very proud man when they played the national anthems; proud, relieved and satisfied that what I set out to do several years before was now achieved. There wasn’t a guffaw or a single indication of disrespect from the huge attendance of 81,000. It was exciting and fulfilling that we had moved on to a more progressive organisation in the real spirit of sport. Van the Man (Morrison) was right: ‘nobody told me there could be days like this’. The perfect summation of Sunday, February 11. There was a huge build-up in the media to the England game, the old enemy and how could we tolerate the playing of ‘God Save the Queen’ in Croke Park. There were protest marches and I was vilified on placards. Seán ‘Judas’ Kelly, West Brit, and a lot worse than that. Could we forgive and forget? 83,000 spectators attended and Ireland won 42-13. Van the Man’s line once more. Rugby was tolerated because of its 32-county status, but soccer, the real foreign game, must have been an even bigger challenge. Was the staging of the soccer internationals more demanding? It presented its own challenges but a full house turned up in a game that Steve Staunton, the late Bobby Robson and their team had to win. Significantly, I noticed that there were far fewer of the GAA hierarchy of the GAA present, unlike the rugby internationals. The game went off without any incidents

23.4.2021 or protests. We got off to a great start as Ireland were able to grind out a 1-0 win against Wales and a similar winning result four days later when we beat Slovakia on the same scoreline. ‘Olé, olé, olé’ of the magical Charlton days rang round Croke Park with the same passion. In 2007 Ireland played international games in Croke Park between rugby and soccer, winning three and they were just pipped in the other game. Could you visualise the Fitzgerald Stadium being used for a high-profile soccer or rugby game, maybe a once-off occasion? I see nothing at all wrong with it, but each request would have to be judged on its own merits. There would be no problem playing these games in Killarney, as long as they didn’t interfere with the GAA games programme. I admired you for doing what you felt was the right thing to do and for your tenacity to take on entrenched views from, within the GAA and succeeding. That was great but even better still you extended the All-Ireland Club Football and Hurling Championship competitions to include junior and intermediate levels. Now even the smallest GAA club can aspire to play in Croke Park. You must have been particularly proud to see Kilcummin, your own club, win the All-Ireland IFC in Croke Park in 2009? Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh said that extending those All-Ireland Club competitions, catering for all three grades, was my greatest legacy from my term as Uachtarán. I insisted that all finals would be played in Croke Park. I faced all kinds of excuses to take the games out of Croke Park. Who would turn up for an insignificant junior final, maybe a few hundred followers in this huge stadium where you need upwards to 39,000 paying spectators to pay for the opening up? The first year of the finals were played in Portlaoise. I was bucking but I made sure that from then on the finals were played in Croke Park and that is there to stay. In your present role as MEP and viewing sport from a European perspective, do you think that the All-Ireland Club competitions can go global? How about the incentive for clubs in all grades to progress to a World Club title? The concept is great, particularly with the Irish diaspora cultivating their Gaelic games in so many places around the world. Wouldn’t the champions of Dubai love to play in such international competitions. There are some big difficulties such as expense, distances, languages and others, but these challenges can be faced up to, if the will is there and someone with vision to drive the project. I’d be all for it. Continued on page 52 ➦

Perhaps Larry McCarthy, the new GAA president, would take up that suggestion. His record at club level in the PE College in Limerick and in his native Cork, as well as in New York in recent years, would promote that proposal. In fairness to him, he hardly has his legs under the table and the fall-out from Covid-19 is the major concern at present. However, when we do get back to normal… You have been a great advocate of promoting hurling since your days as a player with Sat Pat’s East Kerry and your hurling brief at that stage being vice-chairman of the Kerry County Board. Historically. hurling played second fiddle to football in Kerry. It was confined, for the most part, to a small number of clubs in North Kerry. When I took over in 1982 there was no hurling in East, West, South and Mid Kerry with some exceptions such as Kenmare and Kilgarvan. We founded St Pat’s East Kerry with the help of great stalwarts such as Pa Doyle, Dan Kelleher, and later Pat Delaney. St Pat’s have been competing ever since and that’s nearly 40 years ago. It was great to see Dr Crokes win the Kerry Intermediate Hurling Championship in 2020 and now they are going senior. That is progress. You will have noticed that the role of ladies in the GAA as players and as administrators has blossomed in recent decades. In one of my interviews with Micheál O Muircheartaigh for On the
Ball over a decade ago, he said his one big wish was to see a lady Uachtarán in the GAA. It hasn’t happened. Not yet, but I am greatly encouraged to see the involvement of ladies as players and as officers, not just at club level but up along the ranks, and I share Micheál’s dream. Cork County Board would be classified as conservative, but they still elected Tracey Kennedy their first female cathaoirleach a few years ago. She did a great job and women of that ilk are well worthy to lead the GAA from the top. The ladies in the clubs are fully accepted and recognised for their work ethic and ability to manage and to lead. Any views on the present Kerry GAA scene? I think that eight teams in the Kerry Senior Football Championship is far too little and this should be addressed. The hurlers are going well and were unlucky to lose a few national titles in 2020. There was fierce criticism of the Kerry senior football players, the management and the county board when we lost to Cork. I was disappointed, but so much of the criticism was unfair. It was a once off on an awful day and Kerry have bounced back before from defeats. The good working relationship between the county board chairman and the team manager is crucial for success. In my 11 years as chairman of Kerry County Board, I worked with four managers: Mick Dwyer, Mickey Ned, Ogie and Páidí Ó Sé. All different, but all fully committed. We won some and we lost some, but we

worked well together. Finally, Seán, have you spent most of the last 13 months in Gortroe, working remotely as an MEP? Pretty much so. I have only been in Brussels three times in that period so, like so many others, most of my work is conducted via Zoom .It’s great to have it, but it’s not as effective as being in the Parliament meeting up with people and
getting things done. The vaccination programmes worldwide are paying off, as we see here in Ireland with less than 400 daily admissions. More new vaccinations, inter-country cooperation and we will get back to normal in the not-toodistant future. Go néirí go geal leat, san Eorap anois, a Sheáin. Fís le torthaí agus gaisce mór ar son CLG.
