“There are so many changes I’ve seen it’d take you a month to write it all down.” Noel O'Sullivan
Killarney man meets music legend | By Michelle Crean
EXCLUSIVE
100 YEARS OLD: John Coffey from Lewis Road will celebrate his 100 birthday this weekend. Photo: Michelle Crean
Local man prepares to celebrate 100th birthday
It’s not many who can say they’ve reached the 100-year milestone - but for Killarney’s John Coffey who still drives independently around town - this weekend will be very special. | By Michelle Crean Tomorrow (Saturday), John from Lewis Road – who will be classed as a Centenarian - will be joined by family from all over Ireland, Australia and America for an enormous party in Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. Then on Monday - the official day he turns 100 - neighbours and friends have organised a Mass for him at the Croke’s Clubhouse where Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson, will present the President’s cheque to him. John is the last of 12 children born to Jeremiah and Nora Coffey (nee O’Connell) in Carnahone, Beaufort on August 26, 1919. He took over the role as a Cottage Rent Collector from his father from 1939 to 1948, cycling from Beaufort back to west Kerry on a daily basis - which he now attributes to his good health and long life. He then took a job in Killarney Town Council as a Community Welfare Officer and built the family home on Lewis Road with his wife Kitty O’Shea from Brandon,
who he met on his travels. They had five children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. John, who is blessed with a pin sharp memory and good health said that he has witnessed many changes over the years – not all of them positive. He has memories of the Civil War in 1923, remembers the old battered roads, the introduction of electricity, met Pope John Paul II, and has witnessed the changes modern life has brought. He also puts his good health down to family genes as his father died aged 99 and his mother aged 97, as well as the active lifestyle he had as young man cycling to west Kerry and building the family home block by block with local man Batty O’Connor. He has also been through some harder days with the loss of Kitty in 1996, his son Denis who died suddenly eight years ago and son John Joe who died aged 13. And he has requested no presents this year for his birthday but has instead asked if anyone wants to give some-
thing, they can make a donation to Down Syndrome Kerry. “What do I want presents for!” he told the Killarney Advertiser. He said that there are so many changes he’s seen - it’d take you a month to write it all down. “The changes are unreal. People have more comfort now than years ago. God almighty, it was real hardship back then. There was no electricity and no tar on the roads. The sense of community is gone completely now. There was no knocking on the door, you’d just walk right in.” And when it comes to modern technology, although he has a mobile phone – he doesn’t use it. He knows about smartphones and tablets but says he got by all these years without using them and warned that soon children “won’t be able to add two and two together”. “In one sense technology is good,” he said. “It can go to the extremes too – but there has to be moderation with everything. You must go with the times - you can’t stop progress.” And some traditions he keeps, like baking a Madeira cake everyday – something his loving wife Kitty did everyday of their marriage.
A chance encounter left one local musician wondering who his admirer was – only to find out afterwards that he had just met a major American multi-Grammy and Emmy-winning music legend. Killarney’s Noel O’Sullivan from Loretto Road, who is now living in Aghadoe, was enjoying playing piano for guests in the Killarney Park Hotel on Tuesday night – and received many compliments from one man in particular – Mike Post, composer of some of the world’s best known TV tunes including Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, The A-Team, NYPD Blue, Renegade, The Rockford Files, LA Law, Quantum Leap, Magnum, PI, and Hill Street Blues. The man regularly came over to explain the backstory to each tune played – but Noel had no idea who he was! Without revealing his identity, the modest composer left a €10 tip and told Noel to look him up online afterwards. “I didn’t know who he was,” Noel told the Killarney Advertiser. “There was a set of Americans at the bar and he came over to me and we got chatting about LA, where he was from. He told me I was a great piano player and went away and came back a few times to explain the back story to each tune I was playing. He put €10 on the piano and told me to look up Mike Post later. When I realised after who he was I was kind of in a state of shock that I was after playing for a guy of that calibre.” And the only regret Noel, who is a music teacher in St Oliver’s NS, has, is not getting a photo with the music mogul. “I was disappointed I didn’t get a photo but I’m going to frame the €10 note.”

Local club to invest €100k in new facilities | By Sean Moriarty A local GAA Club plans to invest €100,000 in new facilities – adding two new dressing rooms and an upgrade to its car park.
EXCLUSIVE
FESTIVAL TIME: Killarney musician Liam O’Connor has been confirmed to play at next week's Electric Picnic.
Next stop… Electric Picnic then… All-Ireland Final! Legendary Killarney musician Liam O’Connor and family will take to the stage at one of Ireland’s biggest music festivals next week.
| By Michelle Crean Liam has been confirmed to play in front of almost 60,000 music lovers at Electric Picnic, which also features Kodaline in this year’s line-up. His daughter Saoirse (20) who sings and plays keyboard, his sons Oisin (18) who plays guitar and drums and Cillian (14) who plays the bodhran, will accompany him both Friday next (August 30) and Saturday (August 31) for a two hour set
Spa GAA Club in Tullig just outside Killarney, has applied to Kerry County Council for planning permission for the works. Growing demand, especially with the ladies and juvenile teams has encouraged the club to expand it facilities, and once the Council approves the plans they hope to start a fundraising drive to pay for the new facilities. The current clubhouse was officially opened in 2006 and a third pitch was added two years ago. “We have to keep looking ahead,” Michael Cronin, Club Chairman, told the Killarney Advertiser. “When the club-
house was built in 2006 there was only four dressing rooms, which was fine at the time. We added a new pitch two years ago. The problem is these pitches share two toilet and shower blocks and if there are three games going on at the same time we can’t have adults, juveniles and ladies teams sharing the showers. There is a growing demand for the use of our sports hall too and the new dressing rooms will serve that too.” Mr Cronin confirmed that the club would need to raise around €60,000 to cover the cost of the new dressing rooms with extra needed to cover the cost of the car park upgrade. “We will have to do both jobs together,” he added. “There is no point in doing the car park and tearing it up again to put in services for the dressing rooms so you are looking at in excess of €100,000 to get it all done.”
each day in Stradbally, County Laois, with support act Phelim Drew, Ronnie Drew’s son. “It’s a great festival,” Liam told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’ll be my second year playing there and it’s lovely to be part of it.” Following that, Liam is set to play in Croke Park ahead of the All-Ireland Final between Kerry and Dublin on Sunday, September 1.
Healy-Rae’s second book will be ready for Christmas So popular was the first book that TD Michael Healy-Rae has done it again – with his second book due out in time for the Christmas market. The Kilgarvan native, working with writer Tara King, launched his first book ‘A Time To Talk’, published by Gill Books, last year. Now, he’s almost ready to bring his second book, ‘A Listening Ear: More Stories from the Heart of Rural Ireland’, to the market. "I’ve it finished,” Michael told the Killarney Advertiser. “I’ve been proofreading it all along and over the next few weeks will be putting the final touches to it. “It will be available on book shelves this autumn, out in time for Christmas.” Michael added that writer Tara King has been exceptionally patient taking his calls
any hour of the day and night. “Tara is a saint. I could ring her late at night and she’d take the call. Anyone you could ring at 1am, 2am or 3am – and I don’t think she ever said no. It’s a measure of how well we got on with the first book to say that we’d work together again.”
BIG PLANS: Spa GAA Club have plans to carry out €100,000 worth of works at their clubhouse. Pictured were: Conor Gleeson (Vice Chair), Michael Cronin (Chairman), Patrick O'Regan (Secretary) and Deirdre O'Sullivan Darcy (PRO).
Lyme signs could soon be erected at National Park | By Michelle Crean Signage warning about Lyme Disease could soon be erected at the entrances to Killarney National Park. Kerry County Council this week confirmed that they are liaising with the HSE, as the public health authority, to seek their advice in relation to signage at entrances to the Park.
A statement from the Council said that Mr J Breen, Acting Municipal District Manager, confirmed the Council does not have authority to provide signage in the National Park. ‘Kerry County Council can only liaise with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and request them to erect appropriate public info signage in the Park.' He also agreed to look at the provision of appropriate signage on the public accesses.

Kay bids farewell after 20 years-service
Murphy’s Bar has been filled with both tears and laughter as staff and customers paid a fond farewell to a loyal employee who gave 20 years-service. | By Michelle Crean

Kay Doona pulled her last pint in the College Street bar, owned by Sean and Máire Murphy, on Wednesday night as she finished her last ever shift before beginning a new career as a Special Needs Assistant in Holy Cross Mercy Primary School this coming September. And not alone did Kay have one party but two, on Sunday and Wednesday, and was lavished with gifts and tributes from all who had the pleasure of her company over the years, explained work colleague Marian O’Connor.
“It was like the long goodbye and it was very emotional,” Marian told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). “She’s had a phenomenal effect on all of us. Kay can walk into a room – she has this fabulous personality – and can put everyone at ease. She’s got an infectious laugh with a Mrs Brown sense of humour.” Gifts included vouchers, a weekend away and a bracelet to go with a watch she received for her 50th birthday, she added. “She even got a call from a customer in America. She’ll be a huge loss here, the customers and staff loved her.”
New remote work spaces launched in Killarney | By Michelle Crean A brand new business concept is set to transform working life in Killarney with new co-working spaces to open next month. Freelancers, remote workers, start-ups and digital nomads will soon have an opportunity to rent a desk at The Box CoWork, located on Pawn Office Lane. Co-founded by Killarney local Adrian McCarthy of Grandview Media, and Work and Organisational Psychologist, Jennifer Dowling, the space will offer fixed and flexible desk space for individuals and small companies working in the Killarney
area. Adrian had previously rented space in Killarney, while Jennifer has been helping big and small businesses to organise their spaces. They explained that it was a concept that they had been thinking about for a while and once they found the ideal location they set it up. Now they’re offering hot desks for €20 a day and fixed desks at €200 a month with the space designed to take the headache out of renting and managing office space for small businesses and freelancers, and also offers an alternative for those working remotely from home offices. The way people work is changing, mod-
Anna, who received a kidney transplant in 2017, is attending the World Transplant Games for the first time. She prepared for the world games by tackling last month’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Originally from Poland but residing in Ireland since 2006, she contested the 3039 years category in cycling the 30k Road Race on Tuesday and taking part in the 5k Mini-Marathon on Sunday. She finished fourth in her age category on the 5k run but on combined times across all age groups Ireland took silver in the team results. “I am delighted,” Anna told the Killarney Advertiser on Tuesday, not long after completing her cycle race. “I would have been happy just to finish the cycle race as this is my first games. It is such an amazing event. I am doing this for myself and also for my donor. I am so happy just to be here and I would not be here without

my donor.” Anna received a kidney transplant in 2017 after six months on dialysis. After surgery she took up walking and then cycling to ease the pain. She only took up competitive running in March this year. The closing ceremony takes place in Gateshead later today (Friday) and Team Ireland are due in Dublin Airport around lunchtime tomorrow (Saturday).

ern workers no longer need to be tied to their city centre office desks, Adrian explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “There is an obvious need for it in Killarney town,” he said. “And the need is growing. We’re starting Phase 1 with 15 to 16 spaces and we’re going to triple that from October onwards. Downstairs we plan to turn it into an events space for up to 60 people.” He said that The Box CoWork will be a flat daily or monthly fee which will cover internet, ESB, cleaning etc., eliminating multiple bills and taking the headaches and risk away for small business owners.
“We also have a great meeting room with video conferencing facilities which make it easy to meet clients in a professional business space in the town centre.” Jennifer added that the number of jobs being advertised now that are one hundred percent remote means that the days of having to choose where we live based on what we do are limited. “The chance exists now, to choose somewhere like Killarney to live and still work in high skilled roles, it’s an exciting time for digitally enabled workers and tourists.” For more contact Jennifer on 087 791 8130 or Adrian on 086 158 2923.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
“Much of today’s world Dublin problems stem from WWII” centric!
There is some evidence the Phoney War - the eight months after the invasion of Poland by Germany in September 1939 during which nothing happened and everyone speculated as to what might, was harder on the British nerves than the dog fight that followed when the real war took off. The 2019 version of the Phoney War is of course the three-year lead up to Brexit when nothing has happened and fear fills the vacuum. Economic Armageddon is predicted by the British Civil Service and Brexit is being imagined like WWII, it emerged last weekend in a Sunday Times report on a leaked document. The leak of that British Civil Service/ Whitehall report on a no-deal scenario was not half as interesting to me as the codename for the report: ‘Operation Yellowhammer’. This title is straight out of the world of Biggles or James Bond, and completely in line with ‘Operation Overlord’, ‘Operation Neptune’, and so on of the last war. The Yellowhammer in the UK is famous for its song “a little bit of bread and no cheese”. And with food shortages forecast in Britain, the choice of the codename ‘Operation Yellowhammer’ for Brexit must be more than a coincidence. This is bunker mentality stuff - and I can't avoid thinking this mentality in the UK has never gone away. It was there before the war and it is there after it. The French President De Gaulle resisted British entry into Europe. They had sheltered him and the Free French, and it seems on one level downright mean
of him to have tried to bar their way to the common market. But, perhaps De Gaulle, having lived among them, and fought alongside them, knew the Brits better than they know themselves. Perhaps he understood their bunker mentality. Perhaps he knew they could never be team players with any other nation. He certainly felt England was divided on the Common Market issue when he vetoed their entry in 1963. And let’s face it, the Brits have never been full team players in Europe, and a good many have always been reluctant Europeans. The Common Market grew out of World War II. It was an economic arrangement among former enemies, in which easy trade was meant to supplant war and bring prosperity, and with economic bonds so strong, there would be no more war. Much of today’s world problems stem from WWII, whether it is Palestine or Pakistan. We have had brief peace in Europe but the approach to Brexit from Whitehall in London suggests that another war is being played out today, only this time it is a proxy war of economics. But it is still war. People are suffering and the uncertainty and doubt creat-
ed since 2016 is taking its toll. Already 210,000 children in the UK are living in containers and condemned housing, according to shocking figures on BBC Radio 4 this week. And the UK elderly are presenting in hospitals suffering from starvation because they can’t afford to eat. Knife crime and deaths from stabbings in London is at an all-time high. At the same time there are obscene levels of personal wealth in the UK from the Crown down. Not a gun has been fired, there are no enemies at the gates, and the English have declared and are preparing for economic war! Brexit dominates here too - with the first shot yet to be fired. Here of course the obsession is with keeping what is a phoney border on the agenda so we are not forgotten! Underlying the “worry” about Brexit here this outdated desire for union with the failed economic entity that is the North of Ireland! And us with our thousands homeless - with parents and children living in hotels. More and more workers being invited in to grow the economy with no place and no provision made to house them or educate them! But we are told Brexit will be important not just for the border but particularly for the free movement of the cows of Ireland, i.e. agriculture. The thing is hysterical! If the English have Yellowhammer, and bread with no cheese, the Irish approach to Brexit with its cows and its fear of being left behind and its phoney border surely deserves the name “Operation Hind Tit”.
Ragwort in Kerry seems far worse than anywhere else Surely we can no longer be a serious agricultural country when our roadsides, our National Park, our fields are so full of ragwort? The legislation controlling the highly toxic yellow weed dates to 1936 and it is an offence to have your land infested. The County Council is clearly falling down on the job. So is the National Park and the national roads authority, the TII. All this week I have passed fields where
the red deer and the black Kerry cows are lying down among the yellow ragwort. I have passed farmer’s fields with horses grazing in among the deadly stuff, and sheep are lying underneath it. The main road to Tralee is practically glowing along the edges. What is going on? Is it a desire to grow the population of the Cinnabar Moth which is about the only thing that can eat it? According to the Department
of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, it is “seeking to enforce the provisions of the 1936 Noxious Weeds Act by issuing “Notices to Destroy” in all instances where it becomes aware of the presence of noxious weeds”. Some 18 such notices were issued in 2017 with a further 22 having been issued in 2018. This was as a result of inspections carried out by field officers or on receipt of reports made by the
How Dublin centric can you get? Well, as much as you are allowed it seems, which is as much as you want! Already Dublin has sucked the transatlantic air monopoly out of Shannon. Now with the biggest ship to France from Ireland, that of the Irish Ferries leaving from the horrible congested Dublin Port and abandoning Wexford, Dublin is sucking the ferry lifeblood out of Rosslare. Why are our Government and our rural TDs allowing this to happen? It has taken 30 years for the Macroom Bypass. It will do us great good if we beat Dublin the next day, whose teams can be drawn from over 1.4m people, as distinct from our 147,000 or whatever it is! I sometimes think the GAA with raison d’etre built on county and parish rivalry has done more harm than good in this country. I suspect that if that old geographical GAA rivalry were not around, Cork and Kerry would have had a regional approach long since, and the Macroom Bypass would have been built long ago. Similarly, I think if we didn’t have football to fight our proxy wars with, rural Ireland would be taking on Dublin in a far more rational sense and demanding of its TDs and Senators that they work for a fair slice for the rest of the country.
public, it said. But these figures are national figures! Hello? I, and others, can point to 18 plus infestations right now on any short drive or walk in Kerry. Meanwhile, “the Department continues to engage annually with all County Councils, Local Authorities and the National Roads Authority to ensure a consistent programme of treatment and disposal of such weeds,” it says. Well, we can all feel safer so. But, with respect, the Department, the TII, County Council etc., have a lot more to do. And I have had occasion to travel to Dublin by road this past week and the ragwort in Kerry seems far worse than anywhere else.

Kilcummin and Spa local winners at All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil Kilcummin CE was one of the most successful local groups at this year’s All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann competition. | By Sean Moriarty Following their success in Drogheda at the weekend, the Kilcummin branch of Comhaltas Ceoltori will host a homecoming event for its musicians and followers. One of the highlights was the U12 set dancing girls who will bring home eight All-Ireland medals to the Kingdom. Further successes included Michael Healy who won both the Melodeon and Accordion U12 competitions, and Steven O’Leary who won the O18s Melodeon competition. “The long journey to Co. Louth was certainly offset by fantastic performances by all members,” Kilcummin CCE’s Derek O’Leary said. “It certainly has been a fantastic few days and Fleadh for the branch and we will soon be starting preparations for Mullingar 2020. In light of all our mem-
bers’ efforts over the last 12 months, we will be holding a celebration night on Friday (tonight) at 8.45pm in the Village Inn with music by Denis Crowley. Everyone is welcome to attend.” Spa CCE was equally impressive in Drogheda, highlights for the Killarney club included winning the Full Set Dancing Ladies Under and Over 18 categories. Spa also won the O35 full set dancing where they overcame Kilcummin who took silver. Over 500,000 people thronged the streets of Drogheda over the eight days. This is the second year in succession that Drogheda hosted the All-Ireland Fleadh. In 2020 it will be moving to Mullingar. Every year the Fleadh provides a cultural meeting place for those who carry the great traditions of Irish music, song and dance in their hearts.

Brian de Staic Jewellery, which has three stores, with one based in High Street, and two in Dingle, won ‘The Irish Independent Jewellery Store of the Year Award 2019’. The awards acknowledged the contributions of the country’s independent retails to the overall economy as well as the wide range of diversity that is present in this sector. They also recognised the business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit of individuals that own smaller chains, whose work is often overshadowed in the bigger landscape. Huge crowds turned out to wish the Kerry senior football team all the best ahead of their All-Ireland final clash with Dublin. | By Sean Moriarty Manager Peter Keane threw open the gates of Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday so fans could meet and greet their heroes. Fans were given a chance to meet some of the senior team players as well as members of the management set-up at the stadium from 11am as they made their final preparations ahead of the big day against Dublin on September 1. This was the only public event with all remaining preparations taking place behind closed doors either at Fitzgerald Stadium or at the Kerry Centre of Excellence in Currans. Children were encouraged to bring a ball or jersey to get signed by team members. And Kerry GAA produced a limited edi-

This is sure to be a keepsake for many years to come.” Last Thursday night, Kerry GAA hosted its only media night ahead of the All-Ireland Final. The Killarney Advertiser joined RTE and other major national media outlets for a unique insight into Kerry’s preparations for their showdown with the five-in-a-row chasing Dubs. Legion’s fitting tribute to late Niall McGillicuddy It was an emotional but very fitting tribute to one of Kerry’s finest young footballers, the late Niall McGillicuddy when his Legion Club took home the winning cup on Saturday. | By Michelle Crean | Photos: Eamonn Keogh A massive crowd gathered in Legion GAA in Direen for the day-long U16 memorial tournament in honour of Niall, who died of Leukaemia in October, aged just 16. 11 teams from all over Kerry took part in the inaugural ‘Niall McGillicuddy Memorial Cup’. Spillane and Danny Sheehan, Legion Senior Manager Stephen Stack, and selector Tommy Griffin were also in attendance. Legion won the main Cup Final in a thrilling final against Kenmare that went into extra time, while Austin Stacks won the Shield Final, explained Elaine O’Donoghue, Killarney Legion PRO. “We’d a fantastic crowd,” Elaine told the Killarney Advertiser. “Across the board it was very well sup-
ported. “The sun shone all day with only one small shower. It was great for Legion to win, a fitting tribute to Niall. Legion captain Matthew Horgan accepted the cup from Daithi and Sheila.” One of the referees on the day, Eddie Walsh, organised a signed number 10 jersey to give to Niall’s family, she added. “The number 10 would have been Niall’s jersey. It was a nice touch and they were delighted.” Connie Carroll organised a BBQ afterwards which everyone enjoyed. Now the club are hoping to make the tournament an annual event. “It was very successful and we’ll look at making it an annual event," Elaine said.

EXTENDED FAMILY: A group of first cousins at the O'Sullivan family reunion gathering in The Killarney Avenue Hotel on Saturday night. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
Craic, dancing and plenty of laughs at O’Sullivan family gathering Preparing a family tree is a daunting task at the best of times but it did not deter the extended O’Sullivan family from The Hill, Ballinahulla, Ballydesmond putting pen to paper and gathering as many first cousins from the third generation for a weekend celebration. Edmund and Julia O’Connell (nee O’Sullivan) had seven children, six boys and one girl. They were all born in a two-bedroomed cottage known as The Hill. In turn they all married and had their
own families. For Edmund and Julia, this resulted in 38 grandchildren, and this was the branch of the family that organised the family reunion.
Like all families, it was impossible to get everyone, but those that did make it came from near and far, from Kilcummin. Limerick, Liverpool and London, for a three-day get together. Their weekend began with an informal gathering on Friday night, followed by a proper celebration at the Killarney Avenue on Saturday night. “It was great craic, a night filled with dancing and laughing,” said Noreen Flynn, granddaughter of Edmund and Julia.
Sunday was all about tracing family roots. They celebrated Mass at St Patrick’s Church in Ballydesmond, the service was dedicated to memory of all generations of this extended O’Sullivan clan. Afterwards, they packed into the maternal family home, The Hill, to continue their three-day catch-up. “My brother owns the house now,” Noreen added. “At least he has added a few extensions over the years so there was room for all of us.”

His extended family, who originally hail from Ballaugh, enjoyed a family reunion at the Dromhall Hotel on Saturday night. Noel arrived in Kerry from his native County Meath when he was still a teenager. He took a job as a chef in the renowned Parknasilla Hotel near Sneem. It was there he met wife Maura and shortly afterwards, in the mid 1960s, they moved to Ballaugh after he took a chef role at the Great Southern Hotel. He later became that hotel’s Head Chef. In later years he was well-known as the
Head Chef at St Brendan’s College, the more sociable hours working for the school allowed him more time for his other great passion - golf. “It was a quiet family affair,” his son Phillip said. “It is not easy to get everyone together but my sisters Chrisann and Elaine were down from Dublin. Unfortunately my brother Patrick could not make it from Boston, but his wife Elaine was there.” They fondly remembered Noel Jr who passed away in 1988.

GARDEN MAGIC

Garden flowers that bloom in late summer Chrysanthemums are coming into their own at this time of year and will last until the end of October, when the winter plants will be in again. They are not just suitable for pots as they look great in a border also. When buying to plant out in the garden, be aware that they will grow a little higher than the size you buy them at, about 60cm. They prefer moist, free draining soil, with a good amount of nutrients in order to flower well. In the spring they can be victims to the slug, so remember to put out some (non metaldehyde) pellets in time! It is very easy to propagate chrysanths. They flower better when the plant is young. Cuttings can be taken in April or September. Take cuttings as close to the base of the plant as possible for maximum success. There are a lot of growth hormones at this point which is why your cuttings will have a high chance of rooting. Place your cuttings in a pot of seed and cutting compost under a clear plastic ‘tent’ to retain moisture, and if you have access to a heated bed, they will root quicker. When they start growing in the spring, pinch out the tops
regularly to encourage bushy growth and more prolific flowering. Asters are another joy in the late summer and come in a range of sizes to suit any spot, from six inches to six feet. They like cool climates, and are ideally suited to Kerry. Choose a sunny spot, but preferably one which does not get the full heat of the midday sun… they prefer moist, well drained loamy soil. They can be susceptible to rust and mildew if the weather is very warm, a well ventilated site should prevent this. Aster will self-seed, but the colours will not be true to the parent plant. April is a good time to take cuttings. Asters are a valuable plant for pollinators, providing some much needed nectar in September Finally, one of my favourite plants at this time of year is the sedum. With its large flat heads of pink florets, Sedum spectabile is a plant which should grace every garden. It is an invaluable plant for pollinators and butterflies, as well as providing a lot of colour. They come in a range of foliage colours and flowers can range from pale pink to dark pink, but in my experience Autumn Joy is one of the oldest and most reliable varieties – a definite must have!

Pavers donate to Kerry charity
Members of Kerry Cancer Support Group - Health Link Transport were presented with a cheque for £2,000 - or €2151 - by Norma Burke, Assistant Manager of Pavers in the Outlet Centre in Killarney last week. Founded by Catherine Paver in 1971, Pavers established The Foundation in 2018 to enable charity giving by the business and its 1700 staff. Through the Foundation, the amount pledged to good causes by Pavers has risen to £2.5m, which includes employee grant applications, Charities of the Year and donations on behalf of the family. Each staff member can put forward causes close to their heart which relate to health, education, or community. A total of £44,900 has been awarded to the second round of 34 applications, with donations ranging from £400 to £5,000. The donation will be used to complement and enhance the existing services that Kerry Cancer Support Group provides including the Health Link Transport services which buses patients to hospitals in Cork and Limerick for their cancer treatment daily, “I chose to support the Kerry Cancer Support Group as while I was on maternity leave my baby and I often met the
bus on our early morning walks,” Norma Burke, Assistant Manager at Pavers in Killarney, said. “I would see people going from their own cars, leaving their loved ones to get on the bus. The people always had a smile on their face when getting on the bus, which I thought was amazing because of what they knew was ahead of them that day.” The Kerry Cork link bus offers such a valuable service for people, but also for their families, she added. “It gives them ease and peace of mind to know that they are safe and able to speak to people in similar situations. The very generous donation will help to keep the buses going.” Breda Dyland, Manager of the Kerry Cancer Support Group added that they’d like to express their sincere gratitude to Norma for the nomination and to the Pavers Foundation for this very generous donation. “We were absolutely delighted to hear that we’d been successful. The donation will be put to very good use!”

“Since opening the doors of Activate in 2017 as the only Strength and Conditioning facility of its kind in Munster, the Killarney Advertiser has been our go to print advertiser. Put simply, the reach of the Advertiser is without par in Killarney. And I believe it is without equal anywhere in the rest of Ireland. Many small businesses will feel that print media is a waste of time, that may be true for some other print outlets, but the Killarney Advertiser is an ever present weekly feature in the lives of Killarney people and those living in the surrounding hinterland. It is very much part of the unique fabric of this beautiful town and is an important medium for local events, news and businesses alike. It’s as true in fitness and sport as it is in advertising, if you want to be the best, you have to work with the best, and the team at the Killarney advertiser are just that.”

El Pepe, Una Vida Suprema RELEASED: AUGUST 23 Kusturica’s film about Uruguay’s last president, examines what makes José “Pepe” Mujica’s story like no other: a humble man who became his country’s president by sticking true to his beliefs and at the same time embracing change. It is the story of a political activist and a former guerrilla fighter from the Latin American left. He is proud of his past but far from resting
on his laurels, he is a man who also dares to dream of a better future. In a series of interviews, Kusturica delves into Mujica’s legacy. The film explores this particular relationship that forms between Kusturica and El Pepe, as two kindred spirits that come together to discuss the meaning of life from a political, philosophical, aesthetic and poetic perspective.

‘The Other’s Gold’ By Elizabeth Ames
RELEASED: AUGUST 27 Assigned to the same suite during their freshman year at Quincy-Hawthorn College, Lainey, Ji Sun, Alice, and Margaret quickly become inseparable. The leafy green campus they move through together, the idyllic window seat they share in their suite, and the passion and ferocity that school and independence awakens in them ignites an all-encompassing love with one another. The Other's Gold follows the four friends as each makes a terrible mistake, moving from their wild college days to their more feral days as new parents. With one part devoted to each mistake – the Accident, the Accusation, the Kiss, and the Bite – this complex yet compulsively readable debut interrogates the way that growing up forces our friendships to evolve as the women discover what they and their loved ones are capable of, and capable of forgiving. A joyful, big-hearted
book that perfectly evokes the bittersweet experience of falling in love with friendship, the experiences of Lainey, Ji Sun, Alice, and Margaret are at once achingly familiar and yet shine with a brilliance and depth all their own.

What to tell your kids about fitness Nothing at all. Your kids are going to copy you, not listen to you. Invite them to participate. Link them with active friends and celebrate their activity, not the outcome. But if you tell them to “go outside and do something”, or “go ride your bike! It’s brand new” – that’s not going to work. They’re probably still young enough for you to force them to do stuff – but that won’t always be the case, and rebellion is a rebounder. Your influence will always exceed your grasp - but you should know that you’re their model. What I tell your kids about fitness. I have regularly volunteered to coach kids. It’s my life’s mission to see kids engaged in active play, because it’s their best tool for beating depression, anxiety, careers
they’re unhappy in and relationships they’re even more unhappy in later in life. I can give you the stats if you want them. Here’s what I tell the kids on my teams at the start of every season: “Our goal is for you to enjoy football/ soccer/rugby more at the end of the season than you do today.” That’s it. Then I give them our ‘Book of Bright Spots’. It’s a tracking guide for daily bright spots, workout and food. I believe in encouraging children to play, to eat, and to know how both affect their mood and energy. Exercise until you’re happy. That’s it. Activate runs a kid’s program for children ages five to 12 years and a youth programme for teenagers aged from 12-17. Check out Activate.ie for further details.

Restaurant owner brakes customer’s windscreen
New Tenancy Protection service opens in Tralee The national housing charity Threshold has launched a bi-monthly tenancy protection service in Tralee to provide advice and support to those facing difficulties in the private rented sector. Threshold housing advisors will operate the new advice service from Kerry County Council’s Homeless Information Centre, Denny Street, Tralee from 10.30am until 3.30pm on two Fridays every month. “In the last 12 months Threshold has dealt

with 185 at risk of homelessness cases from Kerry alone,” Regina Baylor, Assistant Regional Services Manager with Threshold said. “Data from the County Council shows that 266 households accessed emergency accommodation services in Kerry in 2018, and that the Government spent an average of €6,556 per household on providing the emergency accommodation. Opening this new advice service in Tralee is therefore a response to a huge need in the region.” This new outreach service is being delivered as part of Threshold’s Tenancy Pro-
tection Service, which was established in January 2015 and helped to protect 956 tenancies in its first year. It follows the launch of an outreach service in Limerick earlier this year. “The need for these services clearly highlights that the housing crisis is at a critical level throughout the country and not just concentrated in our larger cities. Our presence in Tralee will enable us to determine if such notices are invalid, thus reducing the number of individuals and families being made homeless.” Threshold’s housing advisors will operate the new bi-monthly advice service on August 16 and 30, September 13 and 27, October 11 and 25, November 8 and 22 and December 6. Appointments can be made by emailing advicecork@threshold.ie or by phone on 1800 454 454.
A furious Albanian restaurant owner punched and smashed the windscreen of his customer’s car while it travelled over two miles – after tourists criticised service at his restaurant. In an online four-and-a-half minute viral video, which was filmed by the passengers in the car, owner Mihal Kokedhima (51), can be seen punching and pulling out the windscreen while his bleeding hands smeared blood across the smashed windshield as the car is being driven down a road in Porto Palermo, southern Albania, while the passengers continuously tried to kick the restaurant owner away. He is said to have flown into a rage after the group voiced their dislike of his food and left his restaurant without paying. The violence was so heinous it has been condemned by Albanian Prime Minster Edi Rama. He described Kokedhima as a 'barbarian' who 'violated the sacred code of Albanian hospitality' and 'shamed us all'. Edi Rama wrote on his Facebook page: 'The barbarism that hit the Spanish friends, violated the holy code of Albanian hospitality, and shamed us all. Hospitality is the most important power of Albanian tourism. The aggression of last night is a stain of shame to never be forgotten'. Kokedhima was later arrested.
Trump believes he is 'the chosen one' President Donald Trump answering a question about the ongoing trade war with China on Wednesday - suddenly declared that he is ‘the chosen one’. Trump, who believes he is special and unique, made the comment when talking to reporters on the lawn of the Whitehouse. The point he was trying to make is that past presidents should have dealt with the inequities in the United States' relationship with China - but didn't, leaving him to handle it. As he turned to the reporters he looked to heavens and proclaimed, "I am the chosen one"!
He quite clearly believes himself to be a great man of history but has a serious addiction to exaggeration and theatrics. “Somebody had to do it, so I'm taking on China.” He has also described himself as the ‘King of the Israel’. Trump has received waves of criticism following the rambling, impromptu comment. He also took aim at Denmark, whose prime minister Mette Frederiksen had firmly rebuffed any suggestions of selling Greenland to the US, calling it “absurd”. “The Prime Minister’s statement that
it was absurd, that it was an absurd idea, was nasty. I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to do was say ‘no we wouldn’t be interested’”, Trump told reporters. “I thought it was a very not nice way of saying something. This has been something that has been discussed for many years,” he added, citing President Harry Truman’s plans in the 1940s to purchase the sprawling land mass. On Wednesday morning, in signs of an escalating diplomatic row, Trump had postponed a planned meeting to Denmark over the Greenland issue.

Future generations will get a glimpse of what life was like in 2019 with participants in many areas taking stock of what’s on their mantlepiece to a fruit bowl, and made a list of its contents. The handwritten pages, collected and bound in a leather covered book, will mark a snapshot in time, making a record of contemporary popular culture for future generations. This community-wide event ran throughout the summer in Lixnaw. The pages are being made in collaboration with a number of different community groups. The project is supported by Creative Ireland and facilitated through the Arts Office in Kerry County Council. "When I first heard of the ‘Illustrated Inventory’ project, it took a while for the idea to sink in,” Liz O'Keeffe, Chairperson of Lixnaw Comhaltas, Scór Officer for Lixnaw GAA and member of Lixnaw Active Retirement, said. “I find it really interesting that in 50 or 100 years- time people will be able to read about the objects we have and use today, by then they might not even know what some of the things are for! I like it especially because everything is
recorded in people’s own handwriting, and I sometimes wonder in 100 years time will people even use handwriting! The project is successful because there is such a range of different age groups involved, from the young children at the Enchanted Fairy Festival to the seniors at the Active Retirement meetings.” As part of Heritage Week, the project will also host a drawing and animation workshop in Ceolann Cultural Centre, Lixnaw this Saturday, August 24, from 2pm - 4pm. Kerry pub population down over 10 percent 71 rural pubs closed in 2018, according to industry analysis by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI). In Kerry, the pub population is down 11.9 percent or 60 less pubs since 2005 while the drinks and hospitality sector enable 10,828 jobs and €464 million in tourism spend in the constituency. In the period between 2005 and 2018, 1,535 or nearly 20 percent of rural pubs closed; many were forced to shut up shop during the recession. DIGI’s analysis of Revenue figures show the rural pub population declined by almost a quarter in Mayo (-21 percent or 98 pubs), Tipperary (-22.5 percent or 118 pubs) and Cork (-25.6 percent or 313 pubs) down from 1,221 to 908 in same period 2005-2018. In contrast, Dublin has experienced a net loss of
only 10 pubs since 2005, a one percent decrease. Among the lowest decline in pub numbers reported were in Wicklow (-1.9 percent), Meath (-2.4 percent) and Kildare (-9.9 percent). The high cost of alcohol excise tax remains a source of significant concern for rural publicans and, indeed, hoteliers, restauranteurs, off-licence owners, and other drinks and hospitality business proprietors. Ireland has the second-highest overall alcohol excise tax in the EU, the highest excise tax on wine, the second highest on beer, and the third highest on spirits. DIGI has called on the Government to reduce alcohol excise tax by 15 percent over the next two years - 7.5 percent in Budget 2020 and then by an additional 7.5 percent in Budget 2021.

Illuminate your skin with a facial peel Prepare your skin for winter with a Sothys glycolic facial peel. There are many skin benefits following this treatment. It's much more than an anti-aging product though as glycolic acid also lightens discolorations such as sun and age spots. It can even help skin that's prone to blackheads, whiteheads and acne, by keeping pores clear of old skin that tends to clog them and cause problems. A glycolic facial is great for giving illumination to the skin leaving it with a radiant glow. It also reduces the appearance of pores, fades discoloration, helps prevent and treat breakouts, and improves overall texture. It’s recommended to do a course of these particular facials. They are certainly more of a treatment then a relaxing facial as they are results driven. All facials are tailored to individual needs. It’s
5
also normal to feel a little tingle from the product, the amount varies between clients and skin types. Steam is used throughout this facial. Between the softening effect of the glycolic and stream, it really loosens blocked pores and allows easy extraction of any blackheads. The softening of the skin doesn’t just help pores, but softens the entire skin and dissolves all the dead cells, revealing younger softer, brighter, skin - making it extremely anti-ageing and illuminating. To book a consultation or find out more information, call Jill on 064 6632966

Welcome to our special cuisine feature The school holidays are almost over and what better way to cheer us up with a special cuisine feature to get the mouths watering! Kerry is known for great food, service and a céad míle fáilte, and to celebrate its reputation for quality food we have a jampacked feature focusing on all the best food offerings available to locals and visitors.
This feature highlights great restaurants, cafés and hotels for our readers to enjoy, and appeals to those who are looking for a casual bite to eat or to those who want to treat themselves for that special occasion. In next week’s edition (Friday, August 30), we have our monthly Home & Living feature, which will be showcasing master bedrooms, guestrooms and much more.
The Brehon Hotel, Killarney

The Heights Hotel
High-end gastro dining with a twist Since the launch of The Heights Hotel new bar and brasserie menu in June 2019, the feedback from guests has been extremely positive. Whilst dining at The Heights you’ll receive nothing but quality food in relaxing surroundings complimented by a warm and welcoming service. With their newest menu, the choices are fun and entirely different to anything you’ll find in Kerry. “Genuinely there's something on the menu for everyone,” Head Chef Jamie Cronin said. “I wanted to create a menu that as a guest you're reading it and think to yourself 'I really don't know what to order because there's so much I see and
want’, and so you come back time and time again.” It’s high-end gastro dining with a twist. There are dishes from across the world such as Sticky Pork Belly Bao Buns, the family favourite Snack Box served in a ‘HFC’ branded snack box and classic choices like the Bone in Rib-Eye, Mixed Grill and Lamb Cutlets. There’s a playful element to their desserts, choices such as Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream Sandwich with a giant piece of Honeycomb and DIY Doughnuts - you’re given syringes filled with Homemade Custard, Chocolate Sauce and Jam to fill your doughnuts yourself, or a classic Baked Apple ‘Crumble’ with a twist. The entire team at The Heights Hotel look forward to welcoming you, your family and friends to try out the highly anticipated menu.

Malarkey Restaurant
New dishes daily at Malarkey Restaurant Malarkey Restaurant on New Street has foodies travelling far and wide to sample Seamus O’Connell’s take on modern Irish local cuisine. The former owner/chef of The Ivory Tower Cork is creating a following locally for those who desire to try something different. Offering a range of menus from tasting to three course set dinners, Seamus, who is an award winning chef, thrives on creating new dishes daily with whatever ingredients are in season. “Now is my favourite time of the year,
with game season afoot, and the magical earthy fruits of the wood, wild mushrooms especially,” Seamus said. “The summer produce has been slow so I'm looking forward to an Indian summer with lots of rich flavours, such as bay laurel crusted venison with blackberry BBQ sauce, or seared wood pigeon with beetroots and rocket.” The restaurant is housed in the former Chapter 40 premises and has been fully renovated. Open seven nights a week, reservations can be made on 064 662 2566 or see www.malarkey.ie.

Over 100 rare and classic cars at Cars & Coffee meet Organisers of the Cars and Coffee meet up in Killarney now hope to make it a regular fixture following the success of Sunday’s inaugural event.
They were inspired to run the Cars and Coffee in Killarney after attending similar events up and down the country. Highlights included Mike McDonagh bringing his 1938 Riley Adelphi Big Four Sports Saloon. Ken O’Neill’s iconic Lancia Delta Integrale, Mike Buckley’s Porsche 911 rally car, Paul Nagle’s pristine Escort RS1800 were other showstoppers on the day. “Having always been into car culture was the first and foremost driver,” Ger said. “The Cars and Coffee phenomenon is something that happens worldwide in lots of major cities and towns. Myself and Cormac both attended various
events like this in Limerick and Dundalk and thought it was perfect for Killarney.” Building on the strong motor culture connected with Killarney, the local motor club organises two major rallies every year. The local vintage and classic car club is very active in the region which was another reason why the two friends decided to run Sunday’s meet. Killarney is a favoured destination for visiting overseas car clubs too drawn by the amazing driving roads in the hinterland. “We saw this informal event as a relaxed way to tie a lot of this interest together,” added Ger. It is hoped the event will grow and become a regular feature on the Irish motoring calendar with the third Sunday of every month being actively considered. Everyone who attend Sunday’s meet were asked to fill out a questionnaire and organisers are currently processing the results in an effort to see where their already successful format can be improved.
Over 100 cars, varying from modern classics, rally cars and supercars were on display at the KC Print facility in Lissivigeen, just outside Killarney. It was organised by KC Print owner, Cormac Casey, and his friend Ger Neeson, both active members of the Killarney and District Motor Club. “We have a car culture in Ireland; however, it is classified into various categories, either motorsport, classic or vintage,”
Cormac said. “There is a general car enthusiast that may not fall into any one of these groups but wants to be part of the car culture scene. Cars and Coffee meets cater for all car enthusiasts without prejudice. Now a global phenomenon, you can find Cars and Coffee meets all over Ireland, so why not Killarney? As a destination, Killarney has so much to offer the motoring tourist.”

SPORT & COMMUNITY NOTES Flesk Valley Rowing Club DINGLE: Last weekend the club travelled in force to the 2019 All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in Dingle. We had some brilliant performances over the weekend, with pride of place going to our under 14 boys (gold) and girls (silver), our ladies who won the Killarney Six race and bronze in the Intermediate race and our men who had success in the Novice (silver), Sprint (silver) and Intermediate (bronze) races. Firstly thanks to Richie Leane, Brian O’Sullivan and John Fleming for towing the boats to and from Dingle. Thanks to all of our wonderful coaches and coxes who have given so much of their time to prepare crews over the past 12 months: Tadhg Kelly, Paul Burke, Colm O’Suillebhain, Neil Horgan, John Fleming, Yvonne O’Leary, Nicola Fleming, Jillian O’Neill, Richie Leane, Wiebke Maguire, Mike Fleming, Sean O’Connell and Donal Kelly. Thanks to Catherine O’Sullivan for regatta preparations and Leah Burke for looking after all of the ID cards in Dingle. Important also to mention all the parents who have assisted us with supervision at training sessions over the last year. A special mention for all of the enthusiastic Valley supporters who came to Dingle in such numbers over the weekend. Thanks also to Muckross Rowing Club for the use of their boat and trailer.
Workmen’s Rowing Club MEDALS: Seven All-Ireland gold medals, seven silver and nine bronze! That’s our proud tally from last weekend’s All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships, held in Dingle, competing against over 600 crews from all around Ireland. Gold: U14 Girls, U16 Girls, U18 Ladies; U21 Ladies; Ladies Sprint, Senior Mixed, Masters Ladies. Silver: U16 Boys, U18 Men, Intermediate Ladies, Junior Men, Vet Men, Vet Ladies, Ladies Gig. Bronze: Killarney 6s Ladies, Masters Mixed, Killarney 6s Men, U21 Men, Pre-Vet Men, Vet Mixed, Senior Mixed, Pre-Vet Mixed, Senior Ladies. A huge congratulation to our competitors who narrowly missed out on placings but rowed so well on the day. To our Novices and Juniors for whom this was a first All-Ireland. We’re glad you enjoyed your weekend and the sheer thrill of this highly competitive
event. Our thanks to coxes: Joe, Luke, Kieran and Mikey O. Also to coaches, assistants, boat handlers, parents and supporters who all helped in so many ways and to Dingle Regatta Committee the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation for their smooth running of this event. Irish Coastal Rowing Federation’s Annual Award for dedication and contribution to rowing with our club as well as National Level, went to our own Timmy Moynihan. FUNDRAISING: Our annual street collection takes place this Monday.
Fossa Rowing Club RESULTS: Thank you to the organizers of the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in Dingle last weekend for a perfect venue despite the wind. Oarsmen and oarswomen competing in U14, U16, U18, U21, junior, intermediate, senior, pre-veteran and veteran categories represented themselves well with Gold in Killarney 6s Men and Intermediate Ladies, Silver in Senior Mixed, PreVeteran ladies and Killarney 6s Ladies and Bronze in U21 Ladies. Thank you to all of the coaches, coxes, boat and equipment transporters and supporters who made this weekend a success. Congratulations also to all of the crews of our host clubs this summer, Cromane RC and Workmen RC, who did so well.
Firies Community Games ALL-IRELAND: Last weekend saw the end to a very enjoyable and satisfying Community Games year for Firies. It has a tremendous year with achievements across the board for loads of our children at county, provincial and of course national level. Thanks to all those who were involved this year from children to parents to the volunteers. Well done to the four children who represented Kerry and of course Firies in last weekend’s National All-Ireland Athletic Finals at the University of Limerick. Simon O'Leary, who participated in the U14 Boys Shot Putt, Doireann O'Shea in the Girls U14 Javelin and Katie Doe in the Girls U14 Long Puck. They all did extremely well in at times very testing and competitive conditions. Finally, Mairead Walsh competing in the
Girls U12 600m ran a tremendous race in the Final winning a well deserved silver medal, a fantastic result all round.
Killarney Community Games ALL-IRELAND: Another successful community games weekend for the Killarney area at the All-Ireland Finals in Limerick with Robbie Hartnett silver in pitch and putt and Fionn Spellman pewter (4th) medal for the U8 80 metres. A brilliant round from Robbie secured the silver medal, just one shot behind the winner. Robbie is under age again next year for this competition but again huge congrats for a superb performance. Fionn Spellman ran terrific all weekend and in an exciting final secured the pewter medal for 4th place. Fionn gained huge experience competing at this level and we are sure this will stand to him for future competitions. Jason Lee competed in the U16 100mts and performed excellently to reach the semi-final but an unfortunate injury prevented him from competing on the Sunday. Unfortunately due to unavailability our U16 did not compete which was disappointing as they were going for 3 in a row National Titles. This brings an end to community games achieved for another very successful year. There will be fundraising activities planned for the end of the year and we are appealing that all parents of children who competed in the area in any activity to please help with these vital fundraisers as without funding we will be unable to compete in the wide range of community games events. If any parent would like to get involved in community games in the area please contact 087 2354416 and we would be delighted to get new members involved.
Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club SCHEDULE: Our schedule for remaining competitions has changed slightly owing to a number of external factors and the revised schedule is as follows: Our annual juvenile competition is taking place this Friday night, postponed up to now owing to weather and lake levels. Mar Loughlan Competition is scheduled to take place on Lough Lein on Sunday, September 8 and anyone interested in

Our Annual Competition on Lough Lein is on Sunday, September 22 and the Tom Bambury Competition is down for Sunday, October 6.

COURTNEY
63
In loving memory of John Broderick, Late of Reavaun, Currow, Killarney Who passed away on 28th August 2018
In loving memory of Shane Courtney, Faha East, Killarney, Who died on 26th August 2011.
On the first anniversary of Johns death, the Broderick family wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all who sympathised with us on our sad loss. Your support and kindness has been greatly appreciated. Thanks to those who sent mass cards, letters of sympathy or in any way supported us during this difficult time.
We thought of you today But that is nothing new We thought of you yesterday And will tomorrow too Your memory is as dear today As in the hour you passed away.
Many thanks to our families, friends and great neighbours who supported us through very difficult days. To all who lit candles, had masses offered and who prayed for John and still do. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This means so much to us that he remains so deeply in your thoughts and prayers. A special thanks to Fr John Buckley for the sincere and thoughtful ceremony and to Deacon Patrick Coffey for his support and prayers on the days following Johns passing. Thanks to all who participated in Johns funeral mass making it very special, the church music and singing by Lily McMonagle and indeed the beautiful tribute Johns friends provided with the guard of honour. We know how immensely proud all of this would have made John, watching on from his peaceful new home in heaven. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr Emer Gill of Brooklands Medical Practice Castleisland for all the care and support she showed John over the years and who is still showing the same care and support to our family following his sad loss. A very sincere thank you to Bernard Tangney of Tangney’s Funeral Home Castleisland for his kindness and sensitivity during the difficult few days we endured having to say goodbye to our amazing John. His guidance and support with all aspects of the funeral arrangements was out of this world and helped us to give John the very best send off to his final resting place. As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgment as a token of gratitude. Mass has been offered for all your intentions. To the best husband and daddy in the whole world, we are lost without you. Not a day goes by that we don’t talk about you and relive happy memories we shared with you. Every morning before we leave each other for school and work we say our prayer together to God asking him to look after you until all three of us are together again in our eternal home.
Gods Garden God looked around his garden And found an empty place. He then looked down Upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. Gods garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering. He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids, And whispered ‘’Peace be Thine’’. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone For part of us went with you The day God called you home.
Graces Morning Prayer Angel sent by god to guide me Be my light and walk beside me Be my guardian and protect me On the path of life direct me. Holy God, mind daddy, Keep him safe and tell him that I love him, And make sure that he’s happy. We will love you forever John, Rest in Peace. Love from your wife Sandra and daughter Grace. xx

PRAYER FOR STRENGTH Every day I need you Lord But today especially, I need some extra strength To face whatever is to come. This day more than any day I need to feel you near, To fortify my courage And to overcome my fear. By myself, I cannot meet The challenge of the hour, There are times when humans help, But we need a higher power To assist us bear what must be borne, and so dear Lord, I pray, Hold on to my trembling hand And be near me today. CD
In loving memory of our 2 young brothers David and Kevin Breen, Late of 26 Hazelwood Drive, Upper Park Road, Killarney, and Aine O’Riordan, Late of St.John’s Park, Castleisland, who died tragically on 25th of August 2010. It doesn’t seem like 9yrs since ye left us here broken hearted. It seems just like yesterday each day and night we think of ye. All we have is memories but rather have ye in our presence, our hearts are broken in two, for part of it went with ye the day god called ye to his heavenly home. God has ye in his keeping, We have ye in our hearts. Ye always had a smile to share, A laugh, a joke and time to care. God proved to us he only takes the best, as now ye rest in heaven. If Roses grow in Heaven lord, Please pick a few for us, If tears could build a stairway, We would climb up to Heaven to see ye again, Ye forever young till we see ye again . Everyday we light candles for yer good souls and masses said for ye. For yer stars are so bright at night that yer light to say goodnight. Each of ye are with yer Daddy’s resting by yer side. Until the day god takes us one by one and our family chain will link up again.
Sadly missed every day by your uncle Hughie, Helen and cousins Ian and Orla.

He gave my darling husband A heart of solid gold, He gave me wonderful memories Only my heart can hold. He was someone I could talk to, That no one can replace, He was someone I could laugh with, Till tears ran down my face.
We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore, We did our best until the end, ‘til we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay. You left behind some aching hearts, That loved you most sincere, We never shall and never will, Forget you father dear.
I will put my arms around you, And kiss your smiling face, Then the pieces of my broken heart, Will fall back into place.
Loved and sadly missd by your loving daughter Olivia and son-in-law Ger xx

As Kerry plot to dethrone the Dubs, Adam Moynihan looks at some of the alternative options at Peter Keane’s disposal The task facing Peter Keane and his management team is an unenviable one. Starting from the second day of June in 2015, when Dublin defeated Longford by 27 points in the Leinster quarter-final, an intercounty manager has plotted the Dubs’ demise on 36 occasions. On 36 occasions, they have failed. After four electrifying years at the top, Jim Gavin’s men are showing no signs of slowing down just yet and they have understandably been installed as overwhelming pre-match favourites for next Sunday’s All-Ireland final against Kerry. That being said, you never know in sport. Far stranger things have happened. Kerry have been steadily improving throughout 2019 and they’re in the final on merit. Is an upset really beyond the realms of possibility? Many of Kerry’s starters are pretty much set in stone by this stage of the year but there are still a few spots up for grabs. And as we saw against Tyrone in the semi-final, the players on pitch at the end of the game are just as important as the ones who start. It will take a Herculean effort to derail Dublin and Peter Keane will have to utilise the permitted maximum of 21 players on the day. Here are some alternates who have the potential to tip the scales in Kerry’s favour.
1. TOMMY WALSH
Big Tom made his return to the Kerry fold in 2019 after a three-year hiatus and the burly Kerins O’Rahilly’s target man quickly reminded us all why he’s
such a firm fan favourite in this part of the world. Walsh showed flashes of his old self in the league, utilising the advanced mark to great effect and frequently setting up scores for his teammates. When Kerry played Dublin in February, the former St Kilda and Sydney Swans player was introduced at half-time and posed the opposition plenty of problems with his raw power and quick hands. Keane called upon Walsh again two weeks ago when the Tyrone game was in the mixer and his impact was immediate. That performance has prompted some observers to call for his inclusion from the off against Dublin. If he does get the nod, it will be his first championship start for Kerry since the All-Ireland final in 2009.
2. JACK SHERWOOD
Jack Sherwood played great football for East Kerry in their run to the semi-finals of the 2018 Kerry SFC and Peter Keane was clearly paying attention. Like Walsh, Sherwood had been in exile from the Kerry set-up for three seasons before being recalled to the extended panel at the end of last year. The Firies man featured regularly at full back throughout the league and he put in a string of impressive performances at the edge of the square. He is perhaps better known as a midfielder and it was there that he had his finest hour in a Kerry shirt to date, as a second half substitute in the All-Ireland semi-final against Tyrone.

SPORT
Sherwood’s direct running is a real weapon and he could well be called upon again on Sunday week.
3. JACK BARRY
Jack Barry was replaced by Adrian Spillane in the 53rd minute of the Munster final and the Na Gaeil midfielder has scarcely been seen since. An ankle injury ruled him out of the Mayo and Donegal games and he managed just minor cameos against Meath (68th minute sub) and Tyrone (75th minute sub). Spillane and Jack Sherwood have deputised well at times but there is still a question mark over who should partner David Moran in the decider. Midfield will be crucial and Player of the Year contender Brian Fenton will require special attention. Barry has done a job on Fenton in the past. Could he do it again?
4. DARA MOYNIHAN
Diminutive half forward Dara Moynihan had an excellent league campaign for Kerry, especially when you consider the fact that this is his very first season at senior. His all-action style of play quickly endeared him to the green and gold faithful and he hardly put a foot wrong when called upon. His opportunities in the championship have been more limited. The Spa man started against Cork in the Munster final but all of his appearances since then have come as a substitute; he came on at half-time against Mayo and in the 31st minute against Meath. Moynihan was also introduced in the 56th minute against Tyrone in the semis. A number of players will be in contention for the right half forward position in the final with Gavin White and Jonathan Lyne playing the role to good effect in recent weeks, but one factor may be in Moynihan’s favour. The former St Brendan’s College captain was Man of the Match when Kerry beat Dublin in Tralee.
5. JAMES O’DONOGHUE
There was some good news for Kerry during the week as Peter Keane confirmed that James O’Donoghue will be available for selection ahead of the All-Ireland final. O’Donoghue, who has been dogged by injuries in recent years, hurt his hamstring against Clare and subsequently missed the Munster final against Cork. He returned against Mayo but was forced off at half-time after aggravating the same injury. He hasn’t played since. It has to be said that Killian Spillane has done quite well in O’Donoghue’s absence but Keane will nevertheless be delighted to have the Legion man back and ready for action. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, the 2014 Footballer of the Year has the wherewithal to make a difference.

All-Ireland Final Build-Up
23.08.2019 | By Sean Moriarty
O’Donoghue and O’Brien available for selection The Kerry football team has received an early boost with the news that both James O’Donoghue and Stephen O’Brien will be available for selection ahead of the squad’s All-Ireland football final date with Dublin on September 1. O’Donoghue’s last appearance in green and gold was on July 14 against Mayo in the first round of the Super 8s. The 2014 Player of the Year picked up an injury that day and was substituted at half-time. He played no part in The Kingdom’s subsequent matches against Donegal, Meath and Tyrone. O’Brien faced an automatic one-match ban having received three black cards this season, the last of which came in the dying stages of their semi-final win over Tyrone. Manager Peter Keane revealed last Thursday night at the County Board’s media briefing that O'Donoghue's recent hamstring injury won't rule him out of contention for selection next week. "He trained last night and was training last week,” Keane told the Killarney Advertiser and the gathered media at
Currans. “He is very close." "The other side of it is that you have 30-odd fellas who are available for selection. His name keeps cropping up by you (the media), but every other fella in that squad is looking for a spot as well. They are all reasonably in good shape and are raring to go." At the same time that the media briefing was taking place in Currans, delegates from the County Board were in Croke Park trying to overturn O’Brien’s suspension. “You don’t want to see any fella miss out on the big day and Stephen has been very good for us this year, and over the last few years he’s been a key player for Kerry,” Keane said. It was confirmed later that night that O’Brien had been cleared to play after the black card he picked up against Meath was rescinded. Keane: Gough is the best referee in the country Kerry manager Peter Keane has dismissed suggestions that the appointment of referee David Gough for the All-Ireland football final was unfair. | By Sean Moriarty Last week the GAA confirmed the Meath man would take charge of Kerry v Dublin on September 1. This will be Gough’s first time to referee an All-Ireland SFC final. In this year’s football championship, Gough refereed the Super 8s games between Mayo and Donegal and Dublin and Cork, the Ulster semi-final between Donegal and Tyrone, and the Connacht semi-final between Mayo and Roscommon. In the Allianz League, Gough refereed Kerry v Tyrone, Down v Westmeath, Cavan v Roscommon and Cork v Donegal. The announcement sparked a furore as Gough, who lives and works in Dublin, was perceived by some to be biased towards the current All-Ireland champions. The Blues are chasing a record breaking five titles in a row and in previous years Gough had been photographed with members of the Dublin team during various victory celebrations across the capital. Former Kerry manager Eamonn Fitz-
maurice was among those heavily critical of Gough’s appointment. Last Thursday night, the Kerry County Board hosted its only pre-final press conference ahead of the final. Speaking at the Kerry press event, Keane dismissed any suggestion that Gough might be impartial. “I have no problem with David Gough,” he said. “I think he’s the best referee in the country at this moment in time. I don’t get hung up on referees. I was thinking about it today, we played Dublin in the league and I can’t tell you who refereed the game. The referee does his job. “My father was a referee below in South Kerry years ago. The referee goes to do a good job. Some guys get ‘het up’ that this guy does not do us any favours or that fella does not do us any favours. Sure the referee was appointed. Was there any hoo-ha about the referee the last day. No, you get on with it.” Meanwhile, Thomas O’Reilly from Kilgarvan staged a one-man protest outside the Fitzgerald Stadium during the Kerry team’s open day on Saturday morning.

White to join illustrious group of Crokes’ Kerry captains
| By Sean Moriarty
Nexy Sunday, Gavin White will join an illustrious group of Dr Crokes club players to lead a Kerry senior team into an All-Ireland final. Kerry is one of the last remaining counties, along with Kilkenny in hurling, to bestow the honour of selecting the captain to their senior county champions. White will captain the Kerry senior team on on September 1 as they bid to halt Dublin’s record-breaking five-in-arow attempt. “It’s not every day you get to captain Kerry in an All-Ireland final,” White said at the team’s only pre-final press conference in Currans on Thursday last. “I never played against Dublin, not
even as a minor. The five-in-a-row is a big deal for Dublin but from our point of view we’re going to play as best we can.” The last time the Kingdom won the All-Ireland final, back in 2014, they were led by White’s Dr Crokes clubmates Fionn Fitzgerald and Kieran O’Leary. Prior to that, Colm Gooch Cooper led the county team for three years but the man who many consider the be the greatest of all time never had the honour of lifting the Sam Maguire as Kerry

captain. Eoin Brosnan was the nominated leader in 2001 when Kerry bowed out at the semi-final stage following a shock defeat to Meath. Connie Murphy captained the team in 1992 when they were defeated by an unfancied Clare team in that year’s Munster final, the same fate that befell Tadgh Lyne 40 years earlier at the hands of Cork. In the early part of the last century, Dr Crokes players captained Kerry on a regular basis. Tom Looney led the Kingdom in 1901 while Eugene O’Sullivan was at the helm when Kerry lost the Munster final to Tipperary the following year.
Dr Crokes great Dick Fitzgerald led Kerry to three Munster titles in a row between 1913 and 1915 and helped his county to two All-Ireland titles (1913 and 1914) in that period before their three-in-a-row bid was halted by Wexford, the team Kerry had beaten on the two previous occasions. Denis Doyle was captain in 1916 while two years later his teammate Con Murphy had the honour of leading out The Kingdom. In more recent years, Johnny Buckley captained Kerry to a Munster title in 2017, and in 2018, goalkeeper Shane Murphy led Kerry to victory over Cork in the first provincial decider at the new Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Martin shoots 11 under Lakers add 6’7” forward to break course record Tobias Christensen Killarney Golf and Fishing Club honorary member Mairead Martin shot a ladies’ record-breaking 11 under par 63 at a recent open day hosted on Killarney’s Irish Open Killeen Course. The 19-year-old, now a +3 handicapper, shot an incredible 10 birdies, one eagle and one bogey for a superb 45 stableford points to win the competition, which was open to visitors and members (male and female) with an official ILGU/GUI handicap. Martin took up golf at the age of 11 is currently on a scholarship at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. She is aiming to follow her dreams of becoming a professional golfer by the end of her four years. She enters year two at
the end of August. “Mairead is a tremendous talent and works extremely hard on her game,” said Killarney Golf and Fishing Club’s Head PGA professional coach Mark Heinemann. “She’s very diligent in her practice and always gives 100% effort, even when things aren't going her way. She’s very ambitious and is willing to leave no stone unturned in order to get to the next level.” Before returning stateside, Mairead will compete next week for the Killarney ladies in the All-Ireland Senior Cup matchplay, which is being hosted at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. Mairead and her Killarney teammates won this event back in 2017.
The Scotts Lakers have made another significant addition to their roster ahead of the new season as the signing of 6’7” Danish forward Tobias Christensen was confirmed this week by club officials.
Christensen, a native of Copenhagen, went to school in the United States where he lined out for Division 2 side Fresno Pacific. The Dane is a versatile player who can shoot the ball and at 6’7” he adds even more height to this increasingly large Lakers team. The talented forward is expected to link up with the squad in the next couple of weeks. With the signings of Spaniard Victor Martínez (6’5”) and American Aaron Jackson (6’6”) already completed, new manager Shane McCarthy looks to be assembling a big, exciting team ahead of the 2019 campaign, which tips off on September 21.

T armac title for Nagle
Victory on last Saturday’s Ulster Rally secured the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship for Craig Breen and Killarney’s Paul Nagle. Nagle has become the second Kerry man to win Ireland’s biggest rally championship, following in the footsteps of his Aghadoe neighbour Mikie Galvin who took the title alongside Keith Cronin in 2016. A deal to contest the Irish series resulted in a whitewash of victories for Breen and Nagle. They won all five rounds contested in R5 cars, starting the season in a Ford Fiesta and ending it with a one-off outing in a Hyundai i20 R5 in Newry on Saturday. Along the way, they had wins in Italy in a Skoda Fabia and the legendary Ypres Rally in Belgium on board a Volkswagen Polo R5. They also enjoyed an outing with the Hyundai World Rally Team in Finland. |
