Tributes to Fr Kevin of Glenflesk Parish Tributes have been paid to Fr Kevin McNamara of Glenflesk parish who passed away on Tuesday of this week. The popular priest was appointed to the Glenflesk Parish in July after previously serving in Killarney, Rathmore and Kenmare. The County Clare native had been in Moyvane for six years before taking over at St Agatha’s Church. "There is widespread shock and sadness at the sudden death of Fr. Kevin,” Bishop Ray Browne said in a statement. “Fr. Kevin was in hospital for a number of days, when Tuesday morning he suddenly took ill and died. Fr Kevin was a man of huge energy and colour. We all regret his passing. Rest in peace, Fr. Kevin. He has been described by friends and colleagues as a larger than life character. Fr Kevin was very active in his short time in Glenflesk and as recently as last October ran a concert in the Gleneagle Hotel to raise funds to re-furbish Barraduff Church. “We are numbed by the suddenness and shock of it all,” Fr Kieran told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was an active

man, and a man in active ministry until he was hospitalised quite recently. He served in Killarney too and is well known in the community. He was full of enthusiasm for doing up Barraduff church. He was a very active priest and achieved an awful lot in his short time in Glenflesk.”

Mayor of Killarney Marie Moloney said she was greatly saddened to hear the news. “It was with great sadness that I heard of the death of Fr Kevin McNamara, a larger than life character who would always leave you with a smile on your face,” she said, “ Fr Kevin was very popular among his parishioners and indeed in the far broader community, He was always engaging with the people and made a lot of people feel very special. His presence among the people will be greatly missed.” TD Danny Healy Rae added: I am very saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Fr. Kevin McNamara. He was a very close and dear friend to all my family, we will forever miss him, he was a very special friend of my late Father and he officiated at his funeral Mass and as late as last week at his Anniversary Mass in KilLcummin. He was a larger than life person, he did great work for individuals and communities and was so kind and straight with everyone, he is a huge loss to the Community and the County of Kerry." From Danny Healy Rae Funeral details were not released by the time the Killarney Advertiser closed for press on Wednesday afternoon.

Christmas masses ticket only Admission to Christmas masses across the parish will be by ticket only and capacity at churches will be capped at 60 percent. This is to allow social distancing measures to be followed in all churches. “We will be allowing 60% capacity so as to allow good space between people, and to ensure this, admission will again this year be by ticket only. Tickets are free, one per person, and you can collect the tickets for you and your household from the Parish Office beside the Cathedral,” parish secretary Sheila Leavy told the Killarney Advertiser. “The usual mask wearing, hand sanitising and ushering will be in place. As always, all our Masses in the Cathedral can be viewed online for those un-

able to attend, for those who are sick or housebound, and for those who are living away.” The parish is also looking for volunteer ushers to help with crowd management issues and to ensure the safety of all mass goers during these different but

difficult times. “If you can you assist as a steward at one of these Masses you might kindly give your name and number to the Parish Office or into the Sacristy this week,” she added.

Christmas comes early for essential local road projects | By Sean Moriarty Some of most eagerly awaited road projects in Killarney have been included in a multi-million national road funding programme announced this week. The Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan has confirmed that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has issued the Greenways and national road funding allocations totalling €676 million to local authorities for 2022. Look out in our first issue of the New Year for a detailed analysis on what this funding means for the Killarney district.

Alana is a knock-out as she qualifies for the European championships | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney girl took one step closer to her dream of becoming the next Katie Taylor after winning a national fight in Dublin over the weekend.

HEALTH: Oisin Murphy is to take a break from racing to focus on personal health matters

Jockey Murphy to relinquish race licence

Alana O'Brien (13) from Hazelwood Drive in Ballyspillane, took up boxing just three years ago, after seeing Taylor fight in Tralee. Alana is daughter of Daniel and Michelle O'Brien and the family is currently based in Kildare but have not forgotten their Killarney roots. Saturday’s fight in Dublin was the equivalent of an All-Ireland for her age group. Her victory over Molly Joyce from Dublin means she will now join the Irish team for the European championships in Sweden in February. “She dominated the fight,” her father Daniel told the Killarney Advertiser. “Molly tried her best, Alana was just a class above. Alana waited two years for this and nothing was going to stop her. She put her heart and soul into it she is now an Irish Champion but it’s only the start as she is going to Sweden in February.”

CHAMPION: Alana O'Brien's victory over the weekend means she will now go forward and represent Ireland in the European championships

Champion jockey Oisin Murphy has relinquished his racing licence to focus on his “rehabilitation.” | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney man, Britain’s top jockey for the last three years, has been having a difficult time off the track. He and his team are to seek medical advice on his difficulties. He has two cases regarding positive tests for alcohol returned from racecourses in 2021 – one in Chester in May and another in Newmarket in October. He also, allegedly breached the British Horseracing Authority’s coronavirus protocols relating to travel in September 2020 and this was the subject of a BHA investigation earlier this month. Prior to the hearing the BHA received submissions from Mr Murphy’s legal team regarding his welfare, which were supported by medical evidence, and stated that Mr Murphy had made a decision to relinquish his Flat Jockeys Licence whilst he engages fully with medical support. “On returning from abroad last Septem-

ber in 2020 I failed to follow the Covid protocol set out by the BHA. In breaking these rules, and attempting to mislead the BHA, I’ve let my governing body down, along with trainers, owners, staff, sponsors and family for which I wish to apologise,” Murphy said in a statement. “In addition to this there have been two racecourse incidents linked to alcohol during 2021. It became obvious to me and to everyone else that I needed to seek serious help. In recognition of this I have relinquished my licence and will now focus on my rehabilitation. I am grateful to the BHA for agreeing to postpone the disciplinary hearing until I have been able to take these steps. “Whether I deserve it or not, many kind people have stood by me and I really appreciate their support . I’m deeply embarrassed and regret my actions.” The BHA and Mr Murphy will not make any further comment on this matter, which remains an ongoing disciplinary process.

ASSOCIATION: Muckross Community Association members Sheila Doona, Peg Coffey, John Kelly, Breeda Daly, Breda Moriarty and Holly.

Muckross defibrillators updated The four defibrillators in Muckross area have been upgraded by Muckross Community Association. The association was able to replace the pads on four defibrillators – located in Loreto National School, Loughquitane National School, Muckross Church and Muckross Community Centre - with the assistance of funding from Kerry County Council and the Department

of Rural and Community Development under the Community Enhancement Programme 2021. “We were delighted to upgrade the defibrillators. The pads in all four defibrillators needed to be replaced. We would like to thank Simon Evans for casting a watchful eye on them too,” said an association spokesperson. “Happy Christmas and stay safe from Muckross Community Association.”

Behind the Mask a smash hit for Christmas A book chronicling how the people of Killarney coped during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 is being snapped up in local bookshops in the days leading up to Christmas.

GOAL Mile returns after one-year absence Husband and wife team Michael and Anne Mangan have welcomed the news that the annual GOAL Mile Christmas Day charity walk will go ahead this year. | By Sean Moriarty The Beaufort couple have organised both the Killarney and Killorglin walks over the last 15 years with the proceeds split between Pieta House and Goal Mile. Last year’s event took place virtually as a result of the pandemic restrictions that were in place at the time. The annual event sees people across the country gather over the Christmas holidays to run, jog or walk a mile in support of vulnerable communities across 14 countries where GOAL works in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Started first in 1977, this year’s GOAL Mile events are organised by a network of community organisers across the country. The Killarney event will take place between 10am to 12.30pm on Christmas

day, at the Deenagh Lodge, Knockreer and that event is being run by Anne Mangan co-organised by Anthony Dennehy. Meanwhile Anne's husband will take charge of the Killorglin run which takes place at the same time and will start at ISK – Intermediate School Killorglin. This year will be particularly poignant for Michael as his long running co-organisers Kevin Griffin, teacher at ISK, passed away since the last event. “It will be the first one without Kevin, he will be missed, he was the main driving force behind the Killorglin one and organised it since it began first,” said Michael. GOAL Mile, run in association with AIB, will also take place between 10am12noon in Kenmare GAA Grounds on Christmas Day morning.

There is massive demand for Killarney Behind the Mask which, in words and pictures, focuses on the lives and experiences of many people who had to adapt to a whole new way of living with proceeds from the venture going to charity. Killarney Behind the Mask tells the stories of ordinary men, women and children whose lives were turned upside down from January to December 2020 as Killarney battened down the hatches. The book has been written and published by Killarney Advertiser columnist, Marie Carroll O’Sullivan, who made it her business to photograph and chat to as many local people as possible, initially within her 2km travel limit and later further afield, to determine how Killarney dealt with the pandemic. She originally posted the stories on her social media site, The Little Memory Gallery, and the response was so positive that she decided to publish her work in book form.

LAUNCH

Speaking at the official launch on Saturday, author Marie said Behind the Mask oozes community spirit as demonstrated throughout a global pandemic. “Through my eyes, it was never a big project, more a labour of love. I am immensely proud to showcase our beautiful town during a time when we radiated exceptional positivity and resilience,” she said. “My notion of compiling a book was backed by the people of Killarney to the

tune of thousands of euro. They invested in me and what a massive compliment that it,” she said. “Behind the Mask gives the opportunity to give back to society as well as the beneficiaries involved and I thank each and every person involved who honoured ne by smiling down my lens in making this history book a possibility,” Marie said. The 364-page hardback, coffee table style publication was officially launched at the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Saturday evening where the guest speakers included Mayor of Killarney Cllr Marie Moloney and inspirational teenager Ian O’Connell who wrote the foreword to the book. The publication is dedicated to Marie’s parents, Mary and the late Pat, and to the late Killarney Garda Paudie Twohig who, with his Garda wife Diane, contributed hugely to the book.

CHARITIES

The beneficiaries of the sale of the book are the Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society and Pieta House-Nathan’s Walk while Marie has also decided to donate part of the proceeds to purchase pampering gifts for the COVID-19 staff at University Hospital Kerry.

AVAILABLE The book, designed by Sinead Collins of Design by Sinead and edited by John O’Mahony of O’Mahony Media, retails at €35 and it is available at Eason on Main Street, Bricín on High Street, Kerry Catering Supplies at the Countess Shopping Centre and O’Connor’s Newsagents on Beech Road.

PRODUCER: Muckross' Niamh Cagney is a producer with MSNBC in New York.

23.12.2021

ON THE SCENE: Yasmin Vossoughian reporting from the Capitol Hill riot last January. The show was produced by Niamh Cagney from her Muckross home.

The Killarney woman at the heart of the biggest US news stories Working from home has taken a very different twist for one Killarney woman. Niamh Cagney is a producer with MSNBC in Manhattan, but over the last year she has covered some of the biggest news stories in the world from both New York and Muckross. | By Sean Moriarty She is currently at home in Lough Guitane where she maintains her role as a news producer for the ‘Yasmin Vossoughian Reports’ show which airs every Saturday and Sunday afternoon in the United States. She also works on the station’s other current affairs programmes like ‘Morning Joe’ and ‘Andrea Mitchell Reports’. Niamh has been living in New York for the last four years, and after a stint with Fox News, she has been working for MSNBC for the last two and a half years. Over the course of the last 18 months she has covered and produced some of the biggest news stories in America, including the biggest of them all, The January 6 storming of Capitol Hill in Washington, and not least the global

pandemic. “This year has been one of the craziest news cycles I've worked through,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “At the beginning [of the year] both Covid and January 6 definitely rivalled each other in our newscasts... A lot of the time January 6th would inch ahead in our coverage.” The January 6th insurrection happened while she was still at home in Ireland on her extended Christmas break and she faced new challenges of trying to produce one of America’s biggest news programmes while operating on Irish time. “Yasmin was on the ground reporting during the riot,” she added. “She was there watching everything unfold, while my team and I sat at our laptops in different corners of the world wondering what the hell was going on... Now, as we approach the one year anniversary of that attack, it's still very much part of the news agenda. “We are still reporting on the before and after, and it's wild to think we still don't have a concrete conclusion of what happened. Trump and his inner circle are still being investigated, some of his supporters seem to be willing to risk a huge amount to avoid harming him. We also have that very real pos-

sibility of him running [for president] again in 2024 – which is obviously a major angle we're looking at for the next news cycle.” The Global Pandemic was also a huge part of her working life over the last 18 months. “The vaccine has given us endless stories, from vaccine hesitancy to misinformation,” she said. Unlike most of Europe, where vaccination rates are as high as 90 per cent, the USA is hovering at about 60 percent uptake. The Federal political system adds to the complexity. “This is putting pressure on [President Joe] Biden,” she said. “And it gets amplified – a Democratic State Governor is more likely to go along with whatever guidance is coming out of the White House... a Republican Governor could really swing either way, and that's when you see tensions developing.” Irish news consumers only get snapshot of what is happening in America through television news bulletins and national newspapers but the sheer size of the country gives way to so many different opinions so that what is seen on this side of the Atlantic will never be able to tell the full story. "It really puts into perspective how massive the country really is when you

have reporters travelling to these areas throughout the Deep South and really Red states talking to residents about the pandemic. It's easy to get trapped into hearing the voices and opinions of people in New York and California and big metropolitan areas, when in reality they make up such a small representation of the country." Cagney is currently at home in Muckross, and her working days starts around 1pm Irish time. “Americans consume news in a different way, they all have their favourite presenters on their go-to TV stations,” she said. “Viewers are more inclined to stick with a few select news sources.” She will return to New York in January where she will head back to the studio and office work for the first time in nearly two years. Niamh works in 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the centrepiece skyscraper of the Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan. The building's name is sometimes shortened to 30 Rock, a nickname that inspired an NBC sitcom of the same name. It is the tallest structure in Rockefeller Center, and the 28th tallest building in New York City. “Fingers crossed we will be back in 30 Rock in January,” she concluded.

NATIONAL STAGE: Team Vroom, which consisted of Kayla Byrne, Ella Galvin, Ilona Sheehan and Grace Daly, won the 'Women in Engineering' prize in the F1 in Schools competition earlier this year.

Killarney students on national motorsport stage

Four members of St Brigid’s F1 in Schools team represented Killarney at a national event recently. Team Vroom, which consisted of Ilona Sheehan, Kayla Byrne, Ella Galvin and Grace Daly, won the 'Women in Engineering' prize in the F1 in Schools competition earlier this year. They received support from Formula Female, a national initiative set up by hockey star and motorsport engineer Nicci Daly, to encourage more young

women to study STEM subjects and take up careers in engineering. Another part of Formula Female is the All-Ireland Go Girls Karting competition. The final of this competition took place, at Kiltorcan Race Track in Kilkenny, in early December. A total of 24 students competed at the event, after which they attended a pan-

el discussion on Women in Motorsport which comprised of representatives from Motorsport Ireland, Formula Female, Digital Motorsports, a kart racer and even an Irish Formula 1 engineer. Team Vroom’s Ilona Sheehan was invited to participate in the panel discussion where she shared the stage with influential female motorsport professionals like Pippa Treacy (engineer at the Mercedes F1 team), Kayleigh Cole (a 17-year-old racing driver) and Laura

Firies priest passes away in the Philippines | By Sean Moriarty The international Redemptorist Community has announced the death of Fr. Hugh O’Donoghue in the Philippines. He died on December 11, at Perpetual Succour Hospital, Cebu City and was 85 years old. Fr Hugh was ordained in Ireland on January 21, 1962. After a year of pastoral ministry, he was sent to the Philippines and faithfully lived his priestly life in Dumaguete, Iligan, Davao, and Cebu serving in various capacities as missioner, pastor, formator, and retreat director. “For those who knew and worked with Hughie he was a very special person, a real character, his commitment to the

Philippine mission and to the life of the Cebu Province over those 60 years was total and his contribution immense,” Fr. Dan Baragry The Irish Provincial told the Killarney Advertiser. “He always related well with young Filipino confreres and was a real father figure to many. We extend our deepest sympathies to Hughie’s family and to all the members of the Cebu Province on their loss and extend our gratitude to confreres and staff in Cebu for their exceptional care of him in the final years of his life. May he Rest in Peace.” Fr Hugh was predeceased by his brother Denis and is sadly missed by his sisters Eileen and Bernadette, nieces, nephews, relatives and his Redemptorist confreres in Ireland and the Philippines.

Hannon (an engineer and author of Daisy’s 1st Race Car book). “Ilona shared an insight into F1 in Schools and the challenge each member took on having very little knowledge of F1 or the technology and software skills required for designing and developing an F1 in schools car,” explained Nicci Daly. “It was a project they felt educated them on the sport and the various roles within it, including engineering, business, marketing and PR. It was a wonderful experience that encouraged them to consider motorsport careers after school.” It was the first time that the four Killarney students attended a race track. “We learned lots as there were many other key speakers besides ourselves. A female representative from the team told us all about her course and how she got involved in extracurriculars related to motorsport. This was particularly interesting as we got to see how her course opens many other doorways as well as providing many experiences that will look great on a CV,” Ilona said. “We got to watch a number of young women take part in a racing shootout competition. After this, I represented us on the Q&A panel facilitated by Niamh Tallon of hersport.ie. I answered on behalf of our team, mostly offering an insight into the F1 in Schools competition how we got involved and the opportunities arising from this.” The others were very inclusive and accommodating, she added. "They were also so very encouraging and seemed to take great interest in our experience in the F1 in Schools competition. They made it known to us that there is many other possibilities in the world of motorsport and encouraged everyone to get involved in motorsport and STEM.”

Plaque unveiling for Moving Bog remembrance The 125th anniversary of the Moving Bog Disaster in east Kerry will be marked with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the Old Chapel Cemetery, Rathmore, during Christmas.

MEMORY: Students at St Brendan's remembered Clare Quinlivan, who passed away four months ago.

Christmas jumper day at seven schools

The festive spirit was strong in several local schools as they donned their Christmas jumpers for charity. The Student Council at St Brigid's Killarney organised a Christmas Jumper Day in the school to raise funds for the Kerry Hospice and the Palliative Care Unit in University Hospital Kerry. St Brigid's is working with six other Killarney schools in this very worthy fundraiser and all schools will pool their donations together. “Kerry Hospice provides an invaluable service to the people of Kerry and their families. It costs €10,000 a week to run. We are delighted in St. Brigid's to join forces with other schools in our community, get into the festive spirit and raise money for this fantastic local cause,” said a school spokesperson. The fundraiser was all the more special at St Brendan’s College. Additional works approved for Beaufort Water Main Irish Water has approved the replacement of an additional 2.3kms of critical water mains in the mid Kerry supply scheme. The works are between the Gap of Dunloe Cross on the Board of Works Road and Beaufort village, to further improve reliability of water supply in the Beaufort, Listry and Faha areas. Kerry County Council are carrying out the works as part of Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme are expected to continue until the end of March. The latest works began along the Board of Works road in July with 2.4kms of new mains being constructed on a section between the Gap Cross and Kissane’s shop. These works are nearing completion and the Kerry County Council crew will then continue working on the next 2.3km section between the Gap Cross and Beaufort Village. “Irish Water acknowledges the significant disruption caused by ongoing breaks to the watermains in the Beaufort, Listry and Faha areas. We would like to thank the local community, businesses, homeowners and commuters for their patience and cooperation while we continue with this vital water network improvement project,” Steven Blennerhassett of Irish Water said. “Replacing the old, damaged pipes will safeguard the water supply for the large part of the mid Kerry scheme supplied from the Board of Works Road trunk wa-

termain. The new water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages. These improvements to the water network are essential in providing a safe, secure and reliable water supply, now and into the future.” Charlie O’Leary, Executive Engineer with Kerry County Council acknowledged the importance of the works to the mid Kerry water supply. “The water supply in the mid Kerry scheme is supplied in part by an asbestos cement pipe laid on sections of the Board of Works road in the 1970s. Almost 8kms in total of the supply pipes across the scheme were replaced in recent years with the remaining replacements now being undertaken on the eastern network toward Killarney. The worst of this section is in and around the Gap Cross with multiple bursts over the years. When this additional 2.3km is completed it will mean that in total 14.5km of very problematic but critical water mains in the area will have been replaced through previously replaced sections and the

work carried out in 2021/22.” This work is being carried out as part of Irish Water’s Leakage Reduction Programme, which will see €500m invested nationally to tackle problematic pipes and leakage in Ireland’s ageing water network. “We understand that this type of work can be disruptive, but we are committed to working with the local community to minimise disruption,” added Steven. The works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water shut offs. Where water mains are being constructed, traffic management will be in place to ensure the works are carried out safely. In order to complete this work safely and efficiently a temporary road closure from the Gap of Dunloe cross to the River Loe bridge is required. Recommended diversions will be signposted on approach. Local access will be maintained throughout the works. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

However, he accepted that not all ticket holders were in a position to attend Wednesday night’s show. “Don’t worry,” he said. “I have come to an arrangement with the INEC that [unused] tickets can be used for the new show. Hold on to the tickets – they are valid for the new show in April or May. Thanks for all the kind support.” Casey felt the pressure more than anyone. He filmed some of his sketches that he used in last night’s show last Friday as the Cabinet were meeting to decide on the latest rounds of restrictions.

The Gleneagle Squash Clubs Christmas Singles Competition The Christmas competition is the premier event in the Gleneagle Squash Club calendar and is kindly sponsored by Kerry Airport and supported by their CEO John Mulhern. Over 50 players took part across four divisions in a straight knock out championship format. The Finals were played on Thursday December 16. The Division 4 final took place between Paula McElligott and Niall O’Connor. Niall is new to the club and did very well to reach a final in his first year but was beaten 3:1 by Paula who has been putting a lot of work into her game recently.

The Division 3 final was between the veteran Mike Crowley and the up-and-coming Mike McCarthy. Youth won the day with McCarthy edging a close encounter 3:1 and it was clear he was ready to move up a division next month. The Division 2 final between Neil Kavanagh and Tom Murphy was edge of the seat stuff. Both men had taken the lead at some point and it stood 2:2 heading into the decider. It was nip and tuck and could have gone either way before Neil came out on top after a tie breaker. The Division 1 final was played between Donnagh Crowley and Paul O’Brien. These are the top two players in the County at the moment and the match did not disappoint.

“Some of the squash and rallies on display were out of the very top drawer. Donnagh and Paul have both put their names on the cup six times now which is a credit to both players. Their level of squash, sportsmanship and manners is an exam-

ple to all players,” said a club official. Paul took the lead after a hard fought first match before Donnagh took the second to tie things up. Paul edged Donnagh in the final two games to win 3:1 in what was a very tight affair.

Christmas parades attracted over 25k people to town Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Niall Kelleher has praised the efforts of the volunteers behind the Christmas in Killarney Festival who pulled off an exceptional series of events in difficult circumstances. | By Sean Moriarty The festival returned this year after the pandemic forced its cancellation in 2020, but the organising committee still had to operate under current and ever-changing public health guidelines. The first Christmas in Killarney parade took place on Saturday, November 27 and continued every Saturday night until December 19. It is estimated that in excess of 25,000 people attend the four parades this year. He explained that the Christmas in Killarney Committee and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce "pulled out all the stops this year" with a fantastic festival.

“This year – with the magical parades returning – we created an incredible atmosphere for those living and working in Killarney and those coming home or visiting for Christmas," Mr Kellher told the Killarney Advertiser. “Killarney has always given an example to other towns that if it worth doing, then it is worth doing right. Standing in the town centre during the month of December, you can observe a visual spectacle that many other locations could only dream about. The spectacular weekly street parades with sensational floats, magically illuminated with lighting and sound, are an absolute joy to witness and the street lighting display and giant decorations at key points are just fantastic focal points.”

A kiss under the mistletoe Almost as evocative of Christmas as the Poinsettia is the Christmas cactus, or the Schlumbergera truncata and with its flat, succulent, jointed leaves and colourful flowers, which brings cheer to any room. These plants are indigenous to the Brazilian rainforest and are actually epiphytic, meaning they live high up in the tree canopy, nestled in the limbs of great trees. They therefore enjoy moisture, and relatively cool temperatures. Buds and flowers will drop off if the plant dries out completely, or if it is over or near a radiator or other heat source. This is a plant which will survive for generations, there are some over a hundred years old handed down like heirlooms in families! The trick for getting them to flower at the right time is to have them in a room where they get up to 16 hours of darkness in every 24 hour period, as well as giving them more water with a very small amount of feed added. It is important that there is absolute darkness, not even an occasional switching on of a light. When the buds appear you may move them to a different place. During summer months, keep them out of direct sunlight, as they scorch easily, causing the leaves to redden. Keeping in mind the fact that they are rainforest natives helps when taking care of them!

Mistletoe Another epiphytic and parasitic tree dweller, equally synonymous with Christmas, is mistletoe. Popular for the tradition of kissing beneath a bunch of it, many gardeners ask me how they might grow their own. We are a romantic bunch! Mistletoe grows on host trees, such as apples, poplar, hawthorn, lime and many others. The berries are sticky and white, favoured by many birds. It is possible to grow it. You will need some fresh berries, preferably picked in March when they are ripe and a tree at least 15-years-old. Those sold at Christmas are not ripe yet and will not germinate. Any younger and it will suffer due to the parasitic nature of the mistletoe. Simply take a good branch, make a little slice under the bark and insert the berries, maybe three or four together. Wrap with hessian or moss to prevent them falling out, and wait... About one in five should germinate, but the first year you will see nothing as it is only a root and a hypocotyl which grows. The second year you will see a small sprig, and after about five years you will be able to cut some for the house. It is a bit of a wait, but hopefully that kiss will be worth it! I would like to wish all gardeners and readers of this column a Happy Christmas, and many thanks for all the positive and beautiful comments over the past year!

Bears are raising money for children’s charity This Christmas at The Europe Hotel & Resort, Bertie Bear’s cousin Charlie Bear has come all the way from Bearhaven to help raise money for the Children’s Health Foundation at Temple Street, Dublin to bring comfort, care and company to over 130,000 children undergoing treatment across the country. Last year when Bertie Bear was staying at The Europe Hotel & Resort, he began thinking about all the children across Ireland who need care and treatment. He went to the manager of The Europe Hotel & Resort and said “These children have a lot to bear, and they shouldn’t bear it alone, what they need is a bear to share at hospital or at home!” The manager agreed and soon they had a plan in place to get Bertie Bear to as many children as possible while raising funds to help children’s charities. This year, Charlie Bear needs your help. For a €20 donation, you will receive a Charlie Bear who is super soft and cuddly, dressed in The Europe Hotel & Resort’s red jumper. Charlie Bear can stay with you or you can give him to any child you think would like his company. 100%

of the proceeds made from the sale of Charlie Bear will go straight to the Children’s Health Foundation. Everyone who donates to receive a Charlie Bear will be entered to win an overnight stay at The Europe Hotel & Resort with dinner, bed and full Irish breakfast in a deluxe Lakeview room for two people sharing. To donate and receive your Charlie Bear visit www.theeurope.com. To find out more about the great work done by Children’s Health Foundation visit, www.childrenshealth.ie.

Author: Rachel Kapelke-Dale ‘Dare Me’ meets ‘Black Swan’ and ‘Luckiest Girl Alive’ in a captivating, voice-driven debut novel about a trio of ballerinas who meet as students at the Paris Opera Ballet School. 14 years ago, Delphine abandoned her prestigious soloist spot at the Paris Opera Ballet for a new life in St Petersburg - taking with her a secret that could upend the lives of her best friends, fellow dancers Lindsay and Margaux. Now 36-years-old, Delphine has returned to her former home and to the legendary Palais Garnier Opera House, to choreograph the ballet that will kickstart the next phase of her career– - and, she hopes, finally make things right with her former friends. But Delphine quickly discovers that things have changed while she’s been away...and some secrets can’t stay buried forever. Moving between the trio’s adolescent years and the present day, ‘The Ballerinas’ explores the complexities of female friendship, the dark drive

towards physical perfection in the name of artistic expression, the double-edged sword of ambition and passion, and the sublimated rage that so many women hold inside– -all culminating in a twist you won’t see coming, with magnetic characters you won’t soon forget.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

Real deer repeatedly attack Rudolph decoration PRESIDENTIAL PARDON: President Michael D Higgins signed a Warrant of Pardon for Mr John Twiss from Cordal who was hanged 126 years ago. Also pictured are Helen McEntee TD, Minister for Justice and Helen O’Connor, great-grand niece of John Twiss and her husband John and children Jack and Kate. Photo: Maxwells

President pardons Cordal man Presidential Pardon is only the sixth such pardon to be granted and the third posthumous pardon. An innocent Cordal man who was wrongly executed almost 127 years ago has finally been given a Presidential Pardon. President Michael D. Higgins signed the pardon for John Twiss at an event in Áras an Uachtaráin. Mr Twiss was executed in Cork Prison on February 9, 1895. John Twiss from Cordal, Castleisland was hanged for the murder of John Donovan a care-taker of an evicted farm at Glenlara near Newmarket in County Cork. Following his execution, a coroner’s inquest was immediately convened. The question of police interference in the conviction of Mr Twiss was examined. The governor of the prison and the prison chaplain both stated they believed in Mr Twiss’ innocence. “In face of the solemn dying declaration made by the deceased before execution on the gallows at Cork jail this morning and the evidence on oath of the prison chaplain the medical officers and the Governor, we hereby express our belief in the prisoner’s innocence and consider this case was one in which the prerog-

ative of mercy should have been exercised," the jury in the inquest stated. The Twiss family have been campaigning for a Presidential Pardon for the last number of years. Recently, a review into the case of Mr Twiss carried out by Dr Niamh Howlin, Law Lecturer in UCD and expert in 19th Century trial law, concluded that all the evidence could not safely support a guilty verdict. In attendance for the signing of the pardon was Ms Helen O’Connor, great-grandniece of Mr Twiss, and her family as well as members of the Michael O’Donohoe Memorial Project, a group based in Kerry who have raised awareness of the case and worked with the Department of Justice on the pardon process. “The case of John Twiss has been one of long standing concern for the people of Kerry, Cork and Limerick," President Higgins said. "Even before his execution, the Fermoy Town Commissioners wrote to the Lord Lieutenant asking him to exercise his Prerogative of Mercy in a petition accompanied with 40,000 signatures, a very substantial number to collect at that time in

rural Ireland. Furthermore, the Governor of Cork Prison and the Prison Chaplain both stated their belief that Twiss was innocent while the jury in the Coroner’s Inquest stated that they believed in Mr Twiss’s innocence. While we cannot undo what happened, we do have the power to acknowledge that what happened to John Twiss was a great wrong. I am pleased to be able to formally grant a Presidential Pardon to him, and to at least set the record straight. I hope that my doing so will bring a sense of closure to his family following almost 127 years. I commend them for their efforts. I would also like to commend the Michael O’Donohoe Memorial Project for their work to bring the case of John Twiss to public attention and their help in bringing the process of obtaining a pardon to fruition.” This Presidential Pardon is only the sixth such pardon to be granted and the third posthumous pardon. It is just the second occasion on which a pardon has been granted for a case predating the establishment of the State, following the pardon which was awarded by President Higgins to Maolra Seoighe (Myles Joyce) in 2018.

One festive decoration is attracting the wrong attention this Christmas as the Rudolph decoration is being repeatedly attacked by real deer! Local deer can't tell the difference between real deer and a 3D red-nosed Rudolph in Fort Nelson, British Columbia. Arlene Chmelyk said her family first repurposed the 3D archery target, made in the size and shape of a white-tailed deer, into 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed White-Tail' about five years ago. However, in a video shared to Facebook she said "every year a buck in the area attacks him or hits and knocks him over and breaks him". With a glowing red light bulb that her husband installed on Rudolph's nose she said she was surprised that the deer weren't warded off by it. "I'm like, he has a bright red nose," she said. "I'm not really sure what they see." Chmelyk said the deer are in their rutting season, but probably cannot tell the difference between real and fake deer. The family will continue to repair Rudolph despite the repeated attacks. "He's standing proud," she said.

ISPCA uncover 20 illegal puppy farms this year It has been a busy 2021 for ISPCA Animal Welfare Inspectors as so far this year as they uncovered more than 20 illegal puppy farms. Inspectors seized or had dogs surrendered to them which included over 620 in 2021 - over 300 of which have come from illegal dog breeders. “Many dogs and puppies we rescued were living in the most horrific conditions

you could imagine, often caged with little to no room to move or escape from their own faeces and urine," ISPCA Chief Inspector, Conor Dowling, said. “Seldom there is clean drinking water, adequate food or bedding and often they are kept in darkness with no access to fresh air or daylight. Such cruelty and neglect causes serious health, psychological and behavioural issues. Fear and lack of socialisation means they will need to stay

in ISPCA care for longer periods of time before they can be responsibly re-homed with loving families. The people who run illegal dog breeding establishments only care about one thing, and that’s money," Conor added. "There is no thought for the welfare of these vulnerable dogs used over and over again for breeding to produce money making litters puppies.”

Santa’s on his way in his high-performance sleigh Motorists in the market for a new car in January might want to pay attention to the performance levels of Santa’s sleigh.

Driving licences permitted for asylum seekers Asylum seekers can now apply for driving licences and learner permits. The 2020 Programme for Government gave certain commitments to allow international protection applicants access to the driving licence system. The Department of Transport had been working with the Road Safety Authority on solutions to make this possible and it was intended to do this through legislation. The High Court recently ruled that international protection applicants meet the normal residence requirement of the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations 2006 and are eligible to apply for a driving licence. This ruling gives the legal certainty to allow access for asylum seekers to be introduced now, ahead of legislation. Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan now intends to introduce a Committee Stage amendment to the Road Traffic and

Roads Bill to ensure that any person who is legally entitled to reside in the State can apply for a driving licence. This will put the Government’s policy on a statutory basis and provide clarity and legal certainty for applicants and the Road Safety Authority. “In the Programme for Government we gave a commitment to making it possible for asylum seekers to access the driving licence system," Minister Ryan said. "The courts have now made a ruling that international protection applicants meet the residency requirements to apply for a licence. I will now proceed to introduce an amendment to the Roads Bill that will put our policy on a statutory footing. Asylum seekers face many challenges as they make their way in life. Being able to drive will give people more independence in their daily lives and the ability to commute to work and education by car when necessary."

The big man in red has just 36 hours to play with, beginning in New Zealand late on Christmas Eve, Irish time By the time he has visited Killarney a few hours later he will have just over half his journey completed. His work won’t be done until the early hours of St Stephen’s Day, his last port of call is Alaska, which is very near his North Pole base. In total, Santa needs to travel 10 million kilometres in that 36 hour time frame. That means he will travel the world at a speed of 77 kilometres per second! This proves why he cannot be seen, as 77 kilometres per second is, after-all, 3,000 times the speed of sound. But if Santa can’t be seen, it is possible, just about, to hear him because the speed he is travelling at means he, the sleigh and team of reindeer are giving off a sonic boom every couple of micro-sec-

onds…listen very closely and it may be just possible to hear the boom. Apart from the performance of the sleigh, Santa is a very busy man during the early hours of Christmas morning and his own level of fitness could make him a serious contender for a place on the Kerry team. There are close to seven billion homes in the world, that gives him 130 microseconds to park the sleigh on the roof, climb down a chimney, place the presents under the tree and eat the treat left out for him. Phew! How does he do that without getting very tired? That is easy to explain. Santa is known for his generosity. And you know what they say about generous people – they have very big hearts! Santa’s heart is a lot more powerful than any normal human being and that is one of his secrets. That said, it is understandable why Santa needs an extra-long rest and is rarely seen anywhere in the world between Christmas Day and the following December when he starts to make his naughty or nice list again.

Community not giving an Inch over telecom tower The community of Inch is maintaining a 24-hour vigil outside a telecoms mast that was erected near a family home last week. Eir built the 24 meter high telecommunications monopole on their own site – and with full planning permission – within meters of the family home in the west Kerry village. The tower was erected last week and the scale and size of it caught the community off guard. “It is a big metal skyscraper in a tiny village,” group spokesperson Katie Foley, of Foley’s Bar told the Killarney Advertiser.

Over the course of the last week the community has held talks with politicians in an effort to get the tower removed. Eir has agreed to cease all operations at the site until a meeting can be held between senior Eir staff and the community. In the meantime, members of the community are maintain a 24-hour watch on the site in case engineers return. “We have people here from 7am and 9pm every day and others are keeping an eye through the night,” added Ms Foley. “The community is sticking in the ground and will not allow this go ahead.

We understand that the engineers are just the men on the ground – they are paid to do a job. But we are the people on the ground here and we also have a job to do too. We are trying to get in touch with the men in offices.” Ms Foley also raised concerns on some of the discrepancies in the planning paperwork. It was stated that tall trees would be planted around the tower to hide it from public view. “None of that was put in place to even try and camouflage it,” she said. Eir has lodged planning permission papers for three more towers in the county, one each in Ballydavid, Brosna, with Kerry County Council.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Tommy Flaherty Tommy is available for advice and fitness consultations, at email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Change your mindset to get positive results How many of you have said or thought “I’m not fit enough” or even heard others say it? Quite frankly it grinds my gears. That mentality is going to hold you back. Change your “I’m not fit enough” to “I will get fit”. Break free from this limiting belief If you think you are not fit enough then you never will be, and let’s face it, you’ll never know if you’re fit enough to do something unless you do it! You can achieve so much more if you have the right mindset, and that this is a mental hurdle to overcome, not a physical one. Everyone must start somewhere, and that can be as simple as aiming to sit a little less and move a bit more. More gentle exercises that don’t require too much skill such as walking and housework can help start you off slowly and build up gradually. You will still be making progress, physically and mentally, and will enjoy it more. A common mistake is trying to achieve too much, too soon. If exercising feels too hard, you will be put off.

USE THESE TIPS TO HELP MOTIVATE AND START YOU OFF

Visualise success Visualisation is an athletic tool that has been used for decades. By closing your eyes and imagining what it would look and feel like to achieve a goal or to complete an exercise, we can prepare ourselves physically and psychologically for the task at hand. Consider a trainer Certified fitness instructors add to the cost of your workout, but they can also add a lot of value. An expert can design a programme based on your goals, show you how to use equipment, and provide tips on nutrition. Log your workouts By recording distances, weights, and

other objective milestones in your fitness journey, you will be able to see progress on paper. That record can come in handy when you are feeling uninspired or lethargic. Don’t over-promise Having goals, even lofty ones, is key to anything you want to achieve in life. Make sure the bar is reachable - even if it means aiming for just 15 minutes on a bike - so you are not overwhelmed. Don’t forget to celebrate the small wins along the way!

THE PLACEBO EFFECT AND HOW IT COULD HELP YOU

Research on the placebo effect has focused on the relationship of mind and body. One of the most common theories is that the placebo effect is due to a person’s expectations. If a person expects a pill to do something, then it is possible that the body’s own chemistry can cause effects similar to what a medication might have caused. For instance, in one study, people were given a placebo and told it was a stimulant. After taking the pill, their pulse rate sped up, their blood pressure increased, and their reaction speeds improved. When people were given the same pill and told it was to help them get to sleep, they experienced the opposite effects meaning when you believe something, it can and will happen. That is the power of strong mentality. If you keep thinking you are “not fit enough” then you will believe it, but if you start to change your way of thinking and change your mindset to “get fit”, you have made a huge step in the right direction. Take small steps to start new habits, no matter how small they may be, and you will start to see some remarkable results. Gift Vouchers Many people give and receive gift vouchers at Christmas. There are many benefits to gift vouchers but there are also some risks. You may lose the voucher, it may expire

before you can use it or you may not be able to spend the balance on a gift voucher. It is important that you know the conditions and rules that apply before you buy a gift voucher.

QUESTION: What are the current rules that apply to gift vouchers? ANSWER: Since December 2, 2019, the Consumer Protection (Gift Vouchers) Act 2019 sets out new rules for gift vouchers. These include the following: Gift vouchers must have no expiry date or be valid for at least five years from the date the gift voucher is issued. You must be given details of the expiry date in a durable format (for example, on paper or by email) at the time you buy the gift voucher. Traders cannot specify that a gift voucher is spent in one transaction, and they cannot charge a fee to change the name on a gift voucher, (if you have to register a name on the voucher). If the balance remaining on a gift voucher is more than €1 after you buy something with it, a trader must reimburse the balance to you. They can give you cash, make an electronic transfer or give you another gift voucher. Q: Do these rules apply to gift vouchers purchased before December 2, 2019? A: The legislation does not apply to gift vouchers bought before December 2, 2019. Some traders may be flexible. If your voucher has expired, you should contact the trader to see if they will extend it. However, if you bought the gift voucher before December 2, 2019, they have no legal obligation to do this and some may charge a fee. Q: What are my rights if I lose a voucher? A: Gift vouchers are like cash, so if you lose them, the company does not have to replace them. If a voucher was made out to you specifically and is not transferable to anyone else, you may be able to get a replacement. This depends on the gift voucher’s terms and conditions and the company’s policy. If you lose a gift card, you may be able to get a re-

placement card but you need to check with the retailer. You could be charged a fee for the replacement card. Q: What happens if the shop goes out of business? A: If a trader goes out of business before you use the voucher, you may have difficulty getting your money back. Usually the trader will owe money to several people so your claim is just one of many. There are rules for the priority to be given to the various debts owed in the case of the business going into liquidation or receivership. Generally, you will be low in the order of priority. You will need to make a claim in writing to the appointed administrator or liquidator (if applicable) providing proof of your voucher. However, it is unlikely that your voucher will be honoured. If a new owner takes over, they do not have to honour your voucher. For this reason, you should buy gift vouchers using a credit or debit card, as you may be able to use chargeback through your bank or credit card provider. MABS launch nationwide SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue Christmas campaign While Christmas is a time of joy and giving that everyone looks forward to, it’s safe to say it’s not without its financial pressures for many. From gifting to socialising throughout the festivities, it’s no surprise that the month of December is one of the most expensive months for households on the calendar. For those who struggle financially during the year, Christmas is more than often a time of high anxiety and stress when it comes to managing finances. Kerry MABS, the money advice and budgeting service is encouraging the public to be mindful of their realistic spending budgets and to reach out to MABS to speak with a Money Advisor or to avail of their useful financial planning tools and information on www.mabs.ie for advice. “For the majority of people, Christmas is one of the most demanding and stressful months financially and unfortunately, we see a lot of people entering into the New Year in debt and under financial pressure," Eamonn Foley, Money Advice Co-Ordinator, Kerry MABS, said. "The financial demands during the festive period make it very easy to exceed budgets and rack up debts. At MABS, we

are here to help and support the public in better managing their particular financial situations and making these expensive periods like Christmas that little bit easier.” For the month of December, MABS has launched a nationwide social media campaign to help the public this Christmas. The campaign titled 'Boss Christmas with MABS', meaning, Budget, Online and Offline Spending, Shopping, and Saving is targeted at those who want to take control and aims to empower people with skills, tips, and life hacks to make celebrating Christmas a little easier. Kerry MABS is encouraging those who will find this period financially stressful to make sure they stick to a plan of realistic gifting and socialising expenses to avoid going over budget and spending unnecessary money on last-minute gifts. MABS strongly advises against borrowing money to spend on gifts and Christmas expenses which will put individuals under even more pressure in the New Year. For more information on MABS and to find your local office, visit www.mabs.ie or call their helpline on 0818 07 2000, available Monday to Friday from 9am to 8pm.

HOME MADE: Charlie and Katie Foley, from Reen House, Killorglin made the snowman (Snowflake), mini Snowman (Snowy) and the Christmas Tree (Bertie) out of silage tyres for Christmas. Take time to pamper your skin over Christmas It's my favourite time of the year but we're all so busy that it's easy to forget our skincare routine. Good habits are important so I would advise removing make-up every night before bed and never ever use wet wipes as they will cause long term damage to the skin. Most people will get gifts of new products, and if you're lucky to be off work make sure you take time to pamper your skin. Using a toner at all ages is important, it's definitely the least used product - but certainly a game changer especially if you're perimenopausal or menopausal. Our skin changes as we age as well as hormones which enlarges the pores as the fat cells migrate down with gravity. By using your toner, it can also help tighten the pores and keep the skin fresh and squeaky clean. I look forward to sitting watching the family movies with my Sothys Hydrat-

ing, Hyaluronic Acid Infused Face Mask on. This mask is so easy to use and really hydrates the skin. You can use it after dinner or whatever time in the day, it doesn't have to be night time. Cleanse, tone and exfoliate your skin, the face masks are so easy you use. Rub a small amount all over the face like a face cream and leave it on for 30 minutes. After you remove with facial sponges or a face cloth, apply your serums, eye cream and day cream. Try to use a mask once a week at home. The more hydrated your skin is the better it will look and feel. You make-up will glide on easily, and you will look more youthful. It's hard to find any extra time in the day for skincare but it's important to fit it into your lifestyle and daily routine. Happy Christmas and New Year to all, I'm looking forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Bikers’ Christmas run helps St Francis’ Special School A Killarney motorcycle enthusiast and Special Needs Assistant at St Francis’ Special School has outlined the importance of the Kerry Bikers annual Christmas Bike Run. Now in its fifth year, the run, which is organised by an amalgamation of several Kerry Motorcycle Clubs under the banner of Kerry Bikers, raises funds for St Francis’ Special School at St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort and Eagle Lodge in Tralee. Over 150 bikers set off from Tralee on Sunday morning, stopping at Centra Muckross Road where additional local bikers joined the run which carried on to Killorglin and Castleisland. Fiona Carroll, who works for the Beau-

fort school and took part in Sunday’s event on her Harley Davidson, said such events are vital to both schools. “Events like this are essential, the money raised goes towards the purchase of sensory toys for children who are high on the autism spectrum. Unusually this year there was a lot of toys donated too as well as money,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was as great day, but it was the first time in a long time that so many bikers were able to see each other.” She also thanked Dave and Kay Foley, the main organisers of the event for their efforts. Mr Foley confirmed that at €2916 was raised on the day with more to come in.

RESULT: Biker Fiona Carroll presents Alexi O’Mahony and Elliot Horan with some of the soft toys donated during Sunday’s Kerry Bikers run.

Should I Buy the Dip? So many people presume they will know what to do when a correction comes. I wish it were that easy. Hindsight is 20/20, and everything looks obvious after the fact. But I can tell you from first-hand experience. It’s nearly impossible to swing for the fences and buy up the significant dips when everything is burning around you. Take the pandemic as an example. In March 2020, companies that I held, and had positive conviction in, fell 50%. It’s easy to look back now and see that these were buying opportunities, but committing capital to a company as it craters is testing for even the most unwavering Stalwart. The narrative upon which you initially invested has now completely changed.

NOTHING IS OBVIOUS When the economy comes to a standstill, the world grounds to a halt, commodity markets fall apart, policymakers are changing the rules, and the government needs to step in to shore up the Fixed Income market. Will you be able to set aside emotion and dive in headfirst? They say you learn from experience, and for me, my lack of a clear analytical checklist left me in a state of decision paralysis. Lesson learned.

CREATE YOUR CHECKLIST

Most of us mere mortals can’t separate logic from emotion in the heat of the moment, so make sure you set out some rules to guide you through those clouded moments. You can think of your emotional state and the ability to make good decisions as sitting on opposite sides of a seesaw. If your state of emotional arousal is high, your capacity to decide well is low. A checklist helps take out the emotion and moves you toward a proper choice. It also keeps you from succumbing to decision paralysis. This checklist will be different for everyone, but here are some examples. Does the company still hold a competitive advantage? Is this correction macro-led or idiosyncratic? - is this just contagion effects from a market-wide sell-off, or is this a company-specific correction? Has the growth outlook for the company dramatically changed? Is this an earnings or non-earnings event? For example, did the stock fall off the back of a disappointing quarterly earnings call, or is this a non-earnings-related correction? There will always be some added volatility during

each earnings season, so it is important to make the distinction. Analyze the value indicators of the company - Is the company competitively priced relative to others in its sector? This is done by measuring the key metrics (P/E, P/S, FCF, etc.) against the company’s competitors. Analyze the momentum indicators for the company – 200-day moving average, MACD, RSI, Support and Resistance levels. These technical indicators will help you establish when the stock is overbought or oversold. Analyze the quality indicators for the company - Compare Free cash flow metrics, Cash Flow Return on Equity figures, ROIC, Gross Profits and EPS stability relative to competitors If these metrics remain strong, so too should your conviction.

NO SHORTCUTS

Some of these terms may be new to you, but you need to know them if you are looking to be a successful stock picker over the long term. Buying stocks simply because they have fallen and you expect them to mean revert is a recipe for disaster. More than 40% of all companies that were ever in the Russell 3000 Index experienced a “catastrophic stock price loss”, which we define as a 70% decline

Michael O’Connor CFA is an investment consultant based in the Cayman Islands with a decade of experience within the financial industry.

from peak levels which is not recovered. Don’t just assume these stocks will come back. Many of them don’t. You have a much greater probability of picking a mega loser than a mega winner. “While the most successful companies generated massive wealth over the long run, only around 10% of all stocks since 1980 met the definition of “mega winners”. It’s perfectly ok to be a contrarian, but be a well-informed contrarian, don’t just blindly follow the stock down. The odds are not in your favour. With the new year just around the corner, take some time to set out your investment plan and checklist for the coming year. Fortune favours the prepared. As always, you can find more investing information at theislandinvestor.com

Fire and safety tips at Christmas Christmas is a busy time of the year and it can be easy to become complacent when it comes to fire and home safety. Fire and safety hazards can be minimised by taking some basic precautions.

John Healy of Healy Insurances.

Only buy festive lighting marked with a CE mark. Switch off all festive lights when unattended. Use only one extension cord – do not double up on extension cords. Do not use outdoor lights indoors. Ensure your real Christmas tree is a safe distance from any open flames and be

wary of candles. Review leads and plugs for fraying and replace if needed. Check smoke detectors are in working order. A fire blanket is a good investment for any home. If you are away from your home over Christmas consider a timer switch for

lights and do not advertise that your home is vacant on social media. Thefts occur at Christmas time too unfortunately. If your home is to be unoccupied for a longer period, inform your insurers, drain the water system so that freezing of pipes cannot occur and ask a friend or relation to check your home daily. Please check on the well-being of any neighbours who are alone over the Christmas period. Stay safe and have a peaceful, relaxing and happy Christmas.

A year in the life of an estate agent The year kicked off with Level 5 restrictions in place resulting in our office being closed to the public and all viewing activity driven online. Property services were then deemed an essential service allowing for limited viewing activity. This all changed again on January 13 with increasing case numbers and all viewing activity ceased. Level 5 restrictions were then extended to March 5. The industry downgraded to Level 3 restrictions in May which meant our offices eventually reopened to the public and business as usual. While the first four months of the year were heavily restrictive, we relied heavily on our investment in technologies to enable us to continue to offer our prop-

erty services. Little did we think back in Mach 2020 that we would sell houses on the back of online virtual viewings only but how the world has changed in such a short space of time. Since the re-opening of society in May, the property market has gone from strength to strength. We have seen price increases of up to 12% nationally in the year. Properties are going to ‘Sale Agreed’ status in record time. The rental market has experienced a similar trend. With a high number of

landlords exiting the market in the past 12 – 18 months and very little construction, rents have continued to rise. Rents in Munster are now 15.6% higher than 12 months ago. We predict a busy year ahead in the local market with availability of stock being a major concern. With the cost of building at an all-time high, the scarcity of available properties for sale will continue into 2022. Looking ahead property prices are set to rise again this year, although at a slower rate than 2021, with predictions of 5% - 7% expected. At DNG Ted Healy, we look forward to 2022 and wish all our clients and 2021 homebuyers a Happy First Christmas in their New Homes.

We Will Know Joy Again by Nicky Barry

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, but not the ones we used to know, When Santa drove his reindeer, with sleigh bells through the snow. When pubs were packed on Christmas Eve, and mistletoe was hung, And folks came home to meet old friends, and give them great big hugs. Now the country is depressed, with all the restrictions, And we don’t know from day to day, what are the predictions. Kids are worried that Santa, might be caught by Omicron, And hoping that he’s got his jabs, to get his sleigh run done. Office workers are upset, that there might be no party, With no Yuletide hanky-panky, between Sally and Harry. Pub entertainers are at home, playing Scrabble with the wife, Hoping that the phone might ring, for a gig some night. Nite club bouncers are depressed, with no doors to man, And take-aways are hanging in, doing what they can. Taxi men are sitting idle, with no drinkers to drive home, And wondering where it all will end, with this damned Omicron. The only folk run off their feet, are all those jabbing arms, And doing their very best, to protect us all from harm. Butchers are preparing turkeys, for some things never change, For this pandemic will pass, and we’ll know joy again!

I want to tell you something Noreen So there won’t be any doubt You’re so wonderful to think of But so hard to be without. Always loved and remembered by husband Bertie.

MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted.

NOVENA TO ST. CLAIRE Ask St. Claire for 3 favours, one business, two impossible and say nine Hail Mary’s for nine days with lighted candle. Pray whether you believe or not. Publish on ninth day. Powerful Novena. May the sacred heart of Jesus be praised, adored, glorified and loved today and every day throughout the whole world forever Amen. Say six times daily for nine days. Your request will be granted no matter how difficult it may seem. Favour publication must be promised.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART You have said O Divine Jesus, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened to you. Relying on these promises, I come with confidence during this novena to beg of you the favours that I need (make request). For whom shall I ask Lord Jesus, if not from you whose heart is an unfailing source of graces and merits. Most loving heart of my God. I believe in your power, I believe in your knowledge I believe in your personal love for me, and therefore O Sacred heart of Jesus I place all my trust in you. Our father, Hail Mary and Glory, say 3 times for 3 days must promise publication. JKOC

NOVENA TO ST. THERESE O little St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, who during your short life on earth became a mirror of angelic purity, of love strong as death, and of wholehearted abandonment to God, now that you rejoice in the reward of your virtues, cast a glance of pity on me as I leave all things in your hands. Make my troubles your own- speak a word for me to our Lady Immaculate, whose flower of special love you were to that Queen of Heaven “who smiled on you at the dawn of your life”. Beg her as the Queen of the heart of Jesus to obtain for me by her powerful intersession, the grace I yearn for so ardently at this Novena, and that she join with it a blessing that may strengthen me during life. Defend me at the hour of death, and lead me straight on to a happy eternity. Amen. C.D.

2021: The great and the good As 2021 draws to a close, Killarney Advertiser sports editor Adam Moynihan reminisces over the year that was I don’t know about you but this year flew by for me. In fact, both of the last pandemic-affected years have gone by in the blink of an eye. As the joke goes, we may be just a few days from 2022 but most of us are still processing 2019. Everything is zipping past us in a blur, and this sporting season was no exception. Of course, it was a shorter season than we’re used to. Lockdown restrictions meant that little to no sport was played in the first third of 2021, which was naturally very challenging for players, coaches, club officers and supporters alike. (Not to mention the media; if we have another lockdown we could well run out of history to rehash.) Absence makes the heart grow fonder, as they say, and it was a great relief to see the fields reopening towards the end

of April. In the end, it turned out to be an exciting year with plenty of meaty talking points. Here’s a look at some of the best (and worst) of Killarney’s sporting year.

SHOCK OF THE YEAR

Dr Crokes finding themselves on the brink of relegation from senior was surprising in and of itself but the fact that they survived with victory over Legion exempts them from this particular award. For most sports fans in this part of the world there was one standout shocking moment this year: when Tyrone showed up – evidently fully recovered from their Covid crisis - and humbled Kerry in Croke Park. With Dublin having been eliminated from the competition and with Kerry

coming off the back of the annihilation of Cork in the Munster final, Sam Maguire seemed closer to a homecoming than ever. Then semi-final opponents Tyrone were struck by a Covid outbreak, forcing the GAA to postpone the fixture by a week. The Ulster champions’ request for a further extension was denied, at which point they threatened to withdraw. The Kerry County Board stepped in and offered to play the game a week later rather than accept the walkover - a noble gesture that would unfortunately not be rewarded by the universe. Tyrone showed up for the semi-final as massive underdogs but they relentlessly tore into Peter Keane’s men for 90-plus minutes of an absorbing encounter, looking remarkably sharp for a team who were apparently unfit to field a team seven days

prior. The Red Hand prevailed and Kerry supporters drifted down Jones’ Road in a state of utter disbelief. It was a stunning ambush that will, unfortunately, live long in the memory.

THE LONG TIME COMING AWARD

Honourable mention to the Killarney golf team of John Kerrisk, Jason Arthur, Mark Tuite, David O'Donoghue, Alan MacSweeney, Paud O'Donoghue, James O'Neill and Mike Maher who took down the All-Ireland Junior Cup, 19 years after the club last clinched the title. The victorious team had a remarkable link to the previous winning side of 2002: three of the players - Arthur, David O'Donoghue and O'Neill – raised the trophy on both occasions. But for sheer emotional value, Spa finally winning the Intermediate Club Football Championship is hard to top. The Tullig club had come so close on so many occasions, so to get over the line by defeating

63

23.12.2021 Beaufort in the delayed 2020 final was a massive moment. Crucially, they also managed to retain their senior status for 2022.

THE AWARD FOR ADMINISTRATIVE EXCELLENCE

All boards and leagues deserve huge credit for adapting to the lockdown and successfully staging their competitions despite the many obstacles that stood in their way. A special word of mention must go to the Kerry District League who held a summer competition, the KDL Challenge Cup, which was well thought-out and well managed. After a lengthy period of inactivity, the players appreciated the opportunity to participate in this Champions League style tournament.

FEELGOOD MOMENT OF THE YEAR

This one has to go to Killarney’s Paralympic hero Jordan Lee. Not only did the talented young high jumper achieve the remarkable feat of representing his country at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, he also had the honour of leading the Irish out as a flag bearer. While Lee was left somewhat disappointed with his performance at the event, it is a moment he will cherish for the rest of his life. And Paris 2024 is just around the corner.

ANTI-CLIMAX OF THE YEAR

The relegation playoff between Dr Crokes and the Killarney Legion was billed as one of the biggest Killarney derbies of all time but, sadly for Legion, the match didn’t quite live up to the hype. Although the underdogs put up a good fight in the first half, Crokes eventually pulled away to secure their senior status and relegate Legion in the process. What promised to be a cracker rather petered out on what was a wet and wintry day in Killarney.

RIVALRY OF THE YEAR

Ironically, the most spoken about rivalry of 2021 has yet to see the light of day – but it will on the second last day of the year. When the Killarney Cougars were admitted into the National League in 2020, talk immediately turned to the friction that was sure to exist between them and the existing Killarney club, Scotts Lakers (St Paul’s). The fact that a number of former Lakers had linked up with the Cougars added plenty of spice to what was already likely to be a fairly heated relationship. However, the cancellation of the 2020/21 season and the manner in which the fixtures have fallen this time around means that the Lakers and the Cougars have had to wait until now, the last week of the year, to finally clash on the court. The season hasn’t been brilliant for either team so far but victory in next Thursday’s derby could set one side up nicely for 2022.

THE SPARK OF GENIUS AWARD

Few people can say they witnessed David Clifford’s drag back and finish against

Galway in May (the match was played behind closed doors) but few who saw the footage will ever forget it. It was an impudent moment of magic from Kerry’s talisman, who scored 3-6 in Tralee that day. If the skill summed up the player, the postmatch interview summed up the man. “I played a bit of soccer in my younger days,” the Fossa star said. “I was a centre-half though so I don't know where that came from!”

THE RAW DEAL AWARD

It’s hard to look beyond the sport of basketball here. Throughout the pandemic local basketball clubs have had to watch from the sidelines as outdoor sports continuously get the green light ahead of them. Whatever the science behind it (or the supposed science behind it), it has unquestionably been a rough period for the sport. There are genuine concerns that some young players have already been lost to other codes for good.

QUOTE OF THE YEAR

“There will be a lot of talk by virtue of the fact there were goals. But if you took the goals out of the game there wasn’t a whole pile in the scoreboard at the end of it.” - Peter Keane following Kerry’s 17-point drubbing of Tyrone in Killarney.

THE ‘MOVING UP TO THE BIG LEAGUES’ AWARD

Former Killarney Celtic player Matt Keane was signed by League of Ireland outfit Treaty United in April and he wasted no time in making an impact. The hard-working midfielder popped up with a 78th-minute winner for his new club as they defeated Munster rivals Cork City 2-1 at the Markets Field. Keane enjoyed a positive season with the league’s newcomers and was recently resigned for the upcoming 2022 season. A talented ball player with a remarkable engine and appetite for graft, Keane’s success at the second highest level of Irish soccer will come as no surprise to anyone who has seen him operate for Celtic in recent years.

SCANDAL OF THE YEAR

The reappointment of Jack O’Connor as Kerry manager was without question the most drawn out and contentious saga of our sporting year. To some, it absolutely verged into the realm of ‘scandal’. Keanites and Connorites clashed over the county board’s handling of the changeover process, and things got particularly ugly when Off The Ball AM reported that O’Connor had secretly been given the job before Keane’s and Stephen Stack’s respective teams had been asked to interview for the then-vacant position. It was a stunning accusation and one that Kerry GAA chair Tim Murphy strenuously denied. Before O’Connor was officially ratified at a county board meeting in October, the outgoing chairman labelled the claims as the “lowest of the low”. “The suggestion about it being a done deal going back three or four weeks ago is again totally erroneous, totally untrue and totally unfounded. It’s put out there

in the media by individuals for whatever reason I have no idea. They want to undermine us as a selection committee, as a county committee and an executive,” Murphy said. “And I find it very disheartening and very disconcerting that people would actually believe that five people of the integrity and the character that were on that selection committee would in any way sully the reputation of Kerry in any form or fashion. I think it’s disgraceful, it’s the lowest of the low.” OTB AM later apologised for making the claims, which they accepted were “false and misleading”.

THE ‘COMPLETED IT, MATE’ AWARD

Paul Nagle’s victory in the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally gave the Aghadoe man a unique record that is unlikely to be matched: he has now won every major rally in Kerry. Nagle previously won the Rally of the Lakes (2019), The Circuit of Kerry (2004) and the Kerry Winter Rally (2003). He is also a former winner of the Modified section of the Killarney Historic Rally and a double winner of the now discontinued Killarney Forestry Rally. It was a double celebration for the Aghadoe man and his driver Craig Breen who were driving a Mats Van Den Brand-prepared BMW M3 with support from Rentokil Initial and Ahern’s BMW. His father Maurice founded the rally 25 years ago and after he passed away just after the

2018 event his family and friends created the Maurice Nagle Memorial Cup, which is presented to the overall winner of the event.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

There are far too many to list here so apologies to everyone who is left out! Some notable achievements in 2021 include: the Dr Crokes hurlers who made the step to senior championship level following their intermediate triumph of 2021 and acquitted themselves well. Sprinter Sarah Leahy was called up to the Irish U23 relay team; boxer Kevin Cronin made great progress despite having to deal with a number of cancellations; and Deerpark Pitch & Putt legend Damien Fleming won the National Matchplay Championship. 18-year-old Killarney cyclist Lorcan Daly had a podium finish at the National Criterium Championships (an elite senior men’s event) and his clubmate Stefan Dreier received an Ireland call-up. Glenflesk rower Caoimhe O'Sullivan of Muckross Rowing Club won a silver medal as part of the Irish female quad crew at the European Junior Championships. Kerry stalwart Aislinn Desmond announced her retirement from intercounty football following 12 years of service to the green and gold. And finally, Killarney RFC fielded U14, U16 and U18 girls teams for the first time in the club’s history, with U18 star Kate O’Donoghue getting drafted into the Munster set-up.

Ironically, the most spoken about rivalry of 2021 has yet to see the light of day – but it will on the second last day of the year.

When I take off the jersey I am a normal person

23.12.2021

Eamonn Fitzgerald speaks to Aidan O’Mahony about his riveting new autobiography, Unbroken Local bookshops have a huge range of sports books on display and these are published strategically to avail of the custom to give a present of a book to someone you admire and love. That goes for the whole gamut of genres. Sports books in particular are popular. I have read quite a number over the years. Pictorially they are attractive, but for the most part the text and story disappoint. Far too many are written by a ghost writer and just like the proverbial ghost they vanish out of your interest in the first 50 pages. For the most part - with very few exceptions - they are a cobbled-together account of games that one can get on Google or Wikipedia. You learn nothing about the person behind the public figure we know and admire. None of the private persona emerges in a wide variety of sports books. Quite a few of the great Kerry GAA players had hardly retired from the public scene when they published their biographies, with undue haste, I add. They made the sports pages again for one day. It is refreshing to read a sports book of substance, a page-turner, as one wonders: what is the real story behind this person? Unbroken by Aidan O’Mahony lets the reader into that secret world, a world of wonder. Okay, he won five All-Ireland medals, but sure there are players in Kerry who won eight. The Rathmore-born garda gives us a wonderful insight into his inner life and motivation. It is a journey of adversity, mental strength and physical fitness. I recommend it highly, up with the best of them. Fight or Flight: My Life, My Choices by Irish rugby star Keith Earls was named

the Sports Book of the Year. The second highest try scorer for Ireland also investigates the inner self and concludes, “if you’re not yourself, then who are you?” Having read Unbroken I spoke with Aidan O’Mahony and teased out with him some wonderful passages from the book. He was honest and convincing in his answers, not shying away from very direct and personal questions that I put to him. Aidan, you are no shrinking violet in the Kerry or Rathmore geansaí, a tough tackler, often living on the edge of the rules of play, a never-say-die, tough as féithleann, hard as nails. In one word, Unbroken, the title of your biography. Is that the real Aidan O’Mahony? What is the difference between the public and private image of Aidan O’Mahony? There was no pause, no hiding, and no obfuscation. “I played on the line but you can’t turn back the clock,” he said. “I made plenty mistakes in my life and I’m sure I‘ll make plenty more but accepting that made a big difference to me. So did hearing something as simple as, ‘mistakes are a normal part of life’.” In the book he writes: “Instead of sinking into dark days and thinking negative thoughts about myself and worrying about the future, I changed. I became a more open person and saw myself differently. I realised that my GAA career wasn’t everything. I wore a jersey, fair enough, but that was just one chapter in my life.” So, there is the inner side to everyone’s life, even such a public figure (a highly motivated and high achieving football star in this instance) and Aidan doesn’t shy away from the negative side. “When I take off the jersey, I am a normal

person displaying the same weaknesses. We need to pick people up. We do not know what’s going on in other people’s lives.” He wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth and was well used to hard manual work on a small sheep/cattle farm just under the Paps Mountains. His father worked at Fry Cadburys chocolate factory in Rathmore and when he came home in the evenings he headed into several hours of farming on the rugged, mountainy terrain. When Aidan came home from school he fell into helping out. There he learned the ethic of hard work, and the determination to overcome obstacles, which stood him in good stead to reach the pinnacles of his successes. Growing up he expected to be a farmer, but his parents had great meas in education, where he was encouraged to do his homework and work to the best of his ability. You said Aidan you were a shy youngster. “Yes, the shyness was part of my growing up.” For all of your life asthma was a big obstacle for you to manage, not to mind the challenge of living with it. It was with you always and yet you made it to the top in Croke Park. It also pitched you into the limelight which you didn’t want, testing positive for the drug salbutamol in your system, which brought you unwanted press coverage. You were all over the papers in November 2008 and branded a “cheat” when you came home from the Australian Rules games. That must have been a harrowing experience. “Yes, it was,” as he explains in the book. On November 17 the GAA released a statement saying that an unnamed player had supplied a positive drug test. Players can be tested at training and after games when a urine example is taken by someone from the GAA, or WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency. Social me-

dia including texts went into overdrive in search of ‘the unnamed player’. He had just finished a night shift with the guards when he received a text message of a leak that he was the unnamed player. He went through hell after the six o’clock news. “A GAA player has failed a drugs test; Aidan O’Mahony of Kerry…” The rest was a blur. He was the first GAA player to fail a drugs test; no one wanted that tag. Particularly painful was the lethargy of the GAA, prolonging the pain until January 22, when his name was cleared; Mahony “hadn’t been trying to enhance my performance, but had taken the salbutamol while using my inhaler”. Team managers know that when some of their players get wheezy, a few puffs of the inhaler is the difference between playing and sitting on the dugout surplus to requirement, despite being fully fit after many training sessions. Since 2008, asthmatic players can thank Aidan O’Mahony for playing guilt free. Much more on Unbroken by Aidan O’Mahony in Part 2 of our review, which will feature in the next edition of the Killarney Advertiser.

SPORT AND COVID

Covid-19 affected all aspects of our lives since we first got to know about Wuhan and the fallout has now gone to two years, with new restrictions imposed by the government in a bid to curtail the onset of Omicron in 2022. It looks like more of the same challenges for everyone next year. Let’s hope that the Irish people, or more accurately, the vast majority of the Irish, will continue to take all the necessary precautions to ensure a safe passage of living with Covid in 2022 and beyond. Omicron is the ‘o’ equivalent in the Greek alphabet, so let’s hope it stops at that, before we head into 2022, 2023 and beyond. Shudder the thought of a new virus wave and if they follow on the same alphabet be prepared for pi, rho, and sigma - new buzz words that will be familiar to past students of Greek in the Sem. Sport was curtailed and restricted in 2021, which saw the capitulation of the Dubs at last to a rampant Mayo, who then faltered in their final. No joy for Kerry after that big win over Cork in the Fitzgerald Stadium, going out to Tyrone, the eventual winners of the Sam Maguire. Jack O’Connor takes over as boss of the Kerry senior football team for the third time. Supporters’ wings have been clipped too often to predict an instant return of the Sam Maguire by next July. We wish him and the players well. With no fewer than 12 All-Stars aboard, is there any stopping Limerick from holding on to the Liam McCarthy for one more year at least? Last week I extended congratulations to Fossa brothers Paudie and David Clifford as well as Tom O’Sullivan, the three Kerry

players who won All-Stars on the 2021 team. It is 50 years since Mick Dunne started the All-Stars and there was only one Kerryman on that first team. That was Donie O’Sullivan from Tiernaboul/ Spa. The year ended well for Stephen Kenny and for John Egan, son of that great Sneem footballer of the same name, as they will take heart from the wins late in the year, which will keep Kenny in his job as Irish manager. Manchester City are tops in the English Premier this Christmas, but Liverpool and Chelsea will be chasing them in the New Year, whatever about Man Utd. I am delighted and relieved that at long last managers are taking the Covid challenge seriously cross channel. If you are injured you may not play; if you are a Covid risk you will not play. That’s the tough stance needed to stop the spread of the virus. Andy Farrell lifted our spirits by managing that superb win over the All Blacks. How about Munster? Ronan O’Gara, the heir apparent to take over, has still nearly two years to go on his contract so it looks as if Paul O’Connell will step in. That’s if he wants it. He is playing a key role with the national team, coaching the forwards, and that was very much in evidence versus the All Blacks. Here’s hoping for good health and unrestricted sports opportunities for all in a Covid free 2022. With live sport so restricted in 2021, we delved into the stories behind the sports stories in Killarney over many decades. So many readers identified with such sporting history. Just one gem. When the Irish freedom fighters were interned in Frongach jail in Wales 100 years ago, Dick Fitzgerald of College Street, a five-time All-Ireland winner, organised football challenges, especially the Louth v Kerry football games, and also athletics. In the 100-yard dash, Micheál Ó Coileán was narrowly beaten into second place. August 22, 2022 will be the centenary of the death of The Big Fella at Béal na mBláth. In Olympic year 2021 comhgháirdeas once more to all the Olympians. You are all winners to reach that standard and there can be very few gold medallists such as the great Kellie Harrington, my preference for Irish Sports Personality of the Year, notwithstanding the credentials of Katie Taylor. Kellie was another sports star who wasn’t born with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth. Let’s once again laud the achievements of local sports stars in the Paralympics. In the Olympic year that is in it, here’s something to figure out over the festive season: who is the only Kerry GAA star who won an All-Ireland senior medal and also won a gold medal in the Olympics? Surely some reader will have it worked when the next issue of Killarney Advertiser will appear on January 7. Wishing all readers health and happiness in 2022.

Kerry Schoolboys/Girls League RESULTS: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18

COUGARS: The Killarney Cougars squad who will be hoping to kickstart their season against local rivals the Scotts Lakers.

Cougars and Lakers set for Christmas showdown

Local rivals the Killarney Cougars and Scotts Lakers will lock horns at National League level for the first time when they meet the day before New Year’s Eve in the Pres Gym. Both sides have endured challenging starts to the 2021/22 season, although the Lakers will hope that last weekend’s impressive victory over the Limerick Celtics will represent a corner turned. The St Paul’s senior team were excellent in their 102 to 81 win as Bulgarian baller Emilian Grudov bagged 38 points and new man Godwin Boahen added 30. Rui Saravia chipped in with 13 points on what was a great night for the Lakers’ imports, but credit must also go to the Irish contingent who made telling contributions. David Gleeson, Paul Clarke and Mark O’Shea were effective under the boards and youngsters Jamie O’Sullivan, Senan O’Leary, Lorcan Keane, Daniel Carroll and Mark Sheehan played their part. The result lifts the Lakers to fifth place, just outside the playoff spots.

COUGARS

Meanwhile, an understrength Cougars side were unable to cause an upset against league leaders UCC as the Demons ran out convincing winners in Cork. Former Laker Toby Christensen was a major factor in this match. He registered 38 points with Tala Fam Thiam adding 14 and Matthew McCarthy posting 10. For the Cougars, Jack Lynch (14) and Justin Tuason (10) tried manfully but ultimately the Killarney team fell to a 81-47 defeat. The result leaves the newcomers winless at the foot of the Southern Conference. Form may not be on their side but they will be hoping that next Thursday’s derby brings out the best in them. The Lakers, one would expect, will be slight favourites but anything can happen when town rivals do battle.

Killarney and District Motor Club has announced the return of the Killarney Forestry Rally in 2022. The event, which was last run in 2007, will be the opening round of the Forestry Championship and will take place on Sunday, February 20. The decision to run the rally was taken by club directors before a unanimous decision came from club members last Tuesday in support of the event. The club has come to the decision to donate all profits from the event to the Community Air Ambulance. A number of worthy charities were mentioned in the decision-making process. Former KDMC chairman Donie Lucey is one of the leading men behind setting up the fantastic service which is hugely important to the rural community in Kerry.

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic RESULTS: U16 Premier - Killarney Athletic 2 Listowel Celtic 0 (Tom Benson, Darragh Kingston). U12 Premier - Killarney Athletic 0 Killorglin 0. U13 Div 2 - Killarney Athletic 2 Mastergeeha 2. Denny Premier A - Killarney Athletic 0 Camp United 1. U13 Premier - Killarney Athletic 2 Tralee Dynamos 3 (Darragh O’Donoghue, Nikita Bizanskis). U15 PREMIER: Listowel Celtic 0 Killarney Athletic 1 (Luke Doolan). Our young Blues made the trip north this morning to play the last game before the Christmas break. The game turned out to be a very tough hard fought win against a strong Listowel side. We made the break through five minutes from half time when Luke Doolan found space inside the penalty area and finished low into the net. It could have been two when Fionn Daly let fly only to hit the underneath of the crossbar and the ball fell to a Listowel defender who cleared his lines. Second half was very tight affair with very little chances created from either side. The game could have been level when Listowel won a free kick in a promising position outside our penalty area only for a fantastic save from our returning goalkeeper Caolán Mitchell. We saw out the remaining minutes to take home the three points which sees us top of the table going into the New Year.

Killarney Celtic DENNY PREMIER A: Killorglin 1 Killarney Celtic 4 (Ryan Kelliher 2, Chris O'Leary, Luke O'Neill. The A team maintained their position at the top of Premier A with a win in Killorglin last Sunday morning. Chris O'Leary struck early to give Celtic an advantage that they never lost. Ryan Kelliher doubled the lead before

Killorglin pulled 1 back. However Celtic added 2 more goals through Luke O'Neill and Ryan Kelliher to take all 3 points. RESULTS: Denny U17 League - Killarney Celtic 2 St Brendan's Park 3 (Kalvin O'Sullivan, Eoghan Crowley). U15 Premier - Killarney Celtic 3, St Brendan's Park 2 (Sean O'Mahony 2, Shane Doolin). The U15 squad gained their 1st league win of the season thanks to a win at home to St Brendan's Park. U13 Div 2 - Killarney Celtic 6 Inter Kenmare 2 (James Murphy 3, Adam Counihan 2, Jack O'Callaghan). Celtic led 4-0 before Kenmare responded but Celtic stayed on track and ran out comfortable winners. U12 Premier - Killarney Celtic 2 Inter Kenmare 1 (Patrick McCarthy, Jamie Fleming). Celtic started well but the post and crossbar denied them the lead until Patrick McCarthy broke the deadlock before half time. Celtic continued to play well without reward until Jamie Fleming netted. Kenmare pulled 1 back to make it a tight finish but Celtic held out.
