Irish In The North? What About Irish In The South?
Graffiti in Belfast calling for the introduction of an Irish Language Act. Inset: Mary Lou McDonald
Incredibly, of all the issues that plague the political sphere north of the border, it’s the proposed Irish Language Act that is reportedly keeping Stormont shut down. Whether this is really a critical issue for Sinn Féin and the DUP or merely an exercise in points scoring is unclear but, either way, it is proving to be a major barrier to progress. A poll carried out during the week on behalf of RTÉ’s Claire Byrne Live revealed that 54% of people in the south of Ireland believe that the Irish language should be protected in the North. 23% said it shouldn’t and 23% said they didn’t know. I wasn’t overly surprised by the percentages but it did make me wonder: how many of those people who feel Irish should be respected elsewhere actually respect Irish themselves? It seems to me that certain people only care about Irish when someone else
tries to mess with it. Like a child with an old toy that they never use, as soon as someone else starts playing with it they want it back. We’re quick to mock Americans who mispronounce Saoirse Ronan’s name, or British people who say Taoiseach incorrectly. It’s no wonder that we know the right pronunciation of Taoiseach. It’s the only Irish word many of us utter from one year to the next. In fact, worse than merely abandoning it, many Irish people actually treat our native language with contempt. How many times have you heard someone saying that they hate Irish, before blaming it on “the way it’s taught”? I’ve never bought that excuse personally. I’m not saying the methods used to teach Irish are perfect; they weren’t in my day and I’m sure they certainly weren’t in generations past. I used to teach English as a foreign language in Asia and my Irish colleagues
and I would often reflect that if we were introduced to Irish the way our students were introduced to English – in an entertaining manner and with a focus on practical conversation - we’d all be fluent Gaelgeoirs. But blaming the schools is a cop out in my opinion. It’s a societal problem. As a nation, our attitude towards languages is terrible - being native English speakers is a crutch that we insist upon using. The simple fact of the matter is that many of us think we can get away with just speaking English, so why bother learning anything else? Catalan history and politics are not too dissimilar to ours. Franco’s regime banned the use of Catalan, just as the English outlawed Irish. In Catalunya, they can “get by” on Spanish if they want but, instead of shunning their own language, they embrace it. The majority of countries put Ireland to shame. Many Europeans are at least bi-
lingual, if not trilingual or quadrilingual. Are they smarter than us? Do they have some innate ability to learn multiple languages? Or is our outlook flawed? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not on my high horse here. I’m as bad as anyone else when it comes to speaking Irish, and I actually don’t mind languages. My Spanish is okay. I didn’t hate German in school and I picked up some Chinese when I lived in Beijing. The sad thing is, since finishing my leaving Cert I’ve probably used all of those languages more than I’ve used Irish, and I’ve lived in Ireland for the majority of my adult life. How tragic is that? So, for those people who think Irish should have special status in the North, it’s worth noting the following: Irish has special status in the south. It’s in our schools, in our courts and on our road signs. If none of us can be bothered to actually speak it, what’s the point?

Bishop “Feels Shame” About Abuse Linked To Church The Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne, has said he “feels shame” that many victims of sexual abuse have suffered at the hands of members of the clergy. He also said that safeguarding is crucial when it comes to preventing further crimes. In a statement to mark the day of the year that Catholics in Ireland are asked to offer prayers for the survivors and victims of sexual abuse, Bishop Browne reflected on the “trauma, dis-
tress and pain” that can be suffered by a person who was abused as a child. “Some victims/survivors seem to heal well, sadly many do not,” he said. “That many such victims have been abused by a priest or another Church person, – I feel shame. It is a reality that the Church has to continue to face up
to.”
“One important thing we can do is promote good safeguarding practice. The better our safeguarding practice, the less likely there will be opportunities for abusers to have access to children they can abuse, and also the greater the possibility of the abusers
being caught at a very early stage.” Figures released in 2013 revealed that in spite of 67 allegations being made against 21 Kerry priests since 1975, only one member of the clergy was ever convicted. 25 allegations were made against the late Fr Patrick McAuliffe alone, with four more being made since that initial report. McAuliffe, a diocesan inspector, had access to every Catholic primary school in the county.

Views On The News
Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column
That Issue Again A picture paints a thousand words, and a roadside billboard thousands more. Well, there is much to be revealed about the mind-set of those behind the so-called pro-life movement in the variety of billboards which have been cropping up in various guises all around Tralee and Killarney. These are the people who equate a mature woman, probably a mother of other children, to the unborn. Well, ain’t it telling that most of the images of women on these bill boards are faceless – they are simply distended stomachs. So, readers, there you have the view of women these people espouse: women are simply bellies for baby machines. Many of these eye-catching large billboards are illegally erected. The council this week said that those for “an information meeting” (is Dr Goebbels back from the dead?) near Killarney, Tralee and the crossroads to the Gap of Dunloe have no permis-
sion and they have twice taken them down. But they are back up. Where is the respect for the motorist, for public taste? For women? For people with Down syndrome? I know of parents and grandparents trying to shield children from them. They are coming across as a self-righteous bunch and there is this ever so slight touch of arrogance that the rest of us are somehow anti-life. And they are convinced not alone have they God on their side, they have science too. Well I think they need to go back to their Bibles. There is nowhere in the Bible that equates the start of life with full life. Nowhere. In fact, the people with God on their side may be surprised to learn that in some parts of the Bible life is attributed only to the fully born. Or maybe they are not so surprised and are just staying quiet about it. As for their science? In the direct lineage of those who excommunicated Galileo, their sun still revolves around their earth.
Facebook Is Watching Danny Healy-Rae calls it “Puss Book”. Why? Because, apart from everyone’s face, everyone’s paw marks are all over it. Well, guilty as charged. I have given up Facebook for Lent (apart from the odd peek). Removed the app from the iPad, so every time I am tempted to take a break and see what’s happening on FB, and maybe release a bit of stress by giving out about something, or get a buzz by gazing at a painting on the arts sites I follow, or see the news from “friends”, I have to think of something else to do. But it is easier to give up the fags than Facebook. Granted, I can still sneak the occasional FB fix and sure who will know? No smoke will rise if I go the long way round via password and email and access a peek (a bit
like smoking outside) - though there is the risk of letting off steam and hot air. Even if I remain inside for my fix, no physical toxins will attach from my screen. So, what of it then? The problem is everyone will know, actually. Facebook is watching me and everyone else and each time I log on they not only know what I am up to, they know where it is I am up to it! Facebook began for me as a journalistic tool, but has become a daily attraction, sometimes a several times a day habit, a nightly engagement, and a bit of fun. But I am getting less enamoured with it. I am also becoming increasingly self-conscious not just in what I say and what I reveal indirectly about myself in “likes”. And sure isn’t it all likes and isn’t everything happy-clappy
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Speaking of Aoife, it seems gentlemen do prefer blondes. To be fair to Killarney’s Mayor of Kerry County Council, John Sheahan, he is a gentleman. In the old-fashioned sense. Cathaoirleach John would open a door for you, and he would hate to upset you. And he a apologized “on reflection” when he woke up to the idea that telling his party colleague Aoife Thornton to go blonde to get attention and speaking time at the monthly meeting might be a little inappropriate these days. After she wearing a yellow jacket and all just for him! He wouldn’t say that to a man. But what I found intriguing was the fact Aoife took her powerful party colleague to task. And she did so publicly. She wanted to speak about potholes and was sick of being overlooked, she said. I know plenty of men from plenty of parties who have complained bitterly about not getting speaking times. Often
the complaints centre on being unfairly treated and overlooked by their own – a chairman from their own party. But there has been ne’er a geek or hint of complaint openly voiced! There is back-biting and whispering in corridors, plenty of that. But the warrior culture prevails and it’s ‘omerta’ amongst the men. And believe me most political parties, all of course founded and peopled by men, value that kind of military discipline. In other spheres it is called corporate loyalty. Others still, Mafia. Same difference. But women don’t buy into that kind of silent speak: they are outspoken. Particularly women in politics. The more women we have the more openness we will have – women like Aoife will want to get the job done, not just to talk about the potholes but get them fixed, and if they have something to say, they will say it. I think the men in the world need to get used to it.
on FB where it is the best of all places in the best of all possible worlds. Isn’t it now? (Unless you make an awkward remark and disturb the ever narcissistic glass pool.) Only that the New York Times tells us in a piece by an FB insider that “when Russians decided to target Americans during the 2016 election, they didn’t buy TV or newspaper ads, or hire a skywriter. They turned to Facebook, where their content reached at least 126 million Americans.” Facebook prioritized data collection, handing over information about their users instead of protecting them. In other words, it doesn’t give a fig leaf for any of us. Worse, the spied upon have a hand in it themselves in opening the door and revealing their own worlds. In all innocence. Figs? We are back to the garden, Adam and Eve, too, bit the apple, probably not realising the consequences fully. Anyway for now, I am trying to resist the bite.
The Builders Are Back in Town! Now how do I know the builders are back in town? Not from the number of planning permissions, because these have not ballooned that much. Or the revelation by Killarney’s own Moira Murrell, chief of Kerry County Council, that 600 new houses are being built by the council around the county in the next four years. No, I know it from the number
of nails in mine, my friends and other people’s tyres. We are getting reacquainted in the most fundamental way with hard-pressed builders again these days and we are back to the days of a puncture a week, with screws, nails, and other builders’ material getting stuck in our wheels. Let’s hope the boom for the builders lasts – but the rest of us could do without the tyre bursts.

INEC Earns Special Praise At Annual IMRO Awards
The INEC was honoured at the IMRO Awards recently with the iconic Killarney arena earning a special commendation in the Hot Press Live Venue of the Year category. More than 11,500 Irish Music Rights Organisation members considered hundreds of venues across the country for the event, which took place at the IMRO headquarters in Dublin “In all of this, it is really important that venues are musician-friendly – which is such a central part of the appeal of the
Hot Press Live Venue of the Year for 2018, Vicar Street,” said Hot Press Editor Niall Stokes. “It is also true of a more traditional venue like Kavanagh’s of Portlaoise, which has made great strides over the past 12 months; and of the INEC in Killarney, which successfully caters for big international acts as well as local heroes.” “Both of these venues are the recipients of Special Commendations from Hot Press and its readers. A big congratulations and well done to all.”

Flooding
Glenflesk Flood Victims May Be Relocated
Owners of Glenflesk homes that were flooded during the winter of 2015 or spring of 2016 may be considered for the Voluntary Home Relocation Remedial Works Scheme. The Government announced details of this voluntary, once-off humanitarian scheme for homeowners last April. Homes that were damaged by floods will be eligible, but only if they’re at a significant risk of similar damage from flooding again, cannot be protected by other possible flood protection or mitigation measures, and cannot obtain flood insurance. As things stand, the only application in Kerry is in
Glenflesk where, as our pictures show, flooding is a major concern. Thanks largely to recommendations from politicians Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran and Michael and Danny Healy-Rae, Kerry County Council are working on a draft design for new flood defences, locals have been informed. Incredibly, the Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Study (‘Flood Risk Review Site Inspection Report’ by Mott MacDonald) commissioned by the government said: “During the site visit (in Glenflesk) there were no visible signs of flooding within the area. The site is not an AFA (area for further assessment).”
“My house was in all three maps they produced over a five year period and was marked as not at risk of flooding,” one homeowner said. “When they proposed flood defence plans for Glenflesk, we weren’t included. We live at the lowest point in the valley… It’s laughable. One of their plans outlined surrounding a section of Glenflesk with a 1.2 metre high mound, which funnily enough ran down the middle of the juvenile football pitch. I sent them back photos showing several feet of water in one field. It was only through the Healy-Raes that we are this far on.”
Tragedy On Mangerton As Walker Dies There was tragedy on Mangerton mountain on Monday afternoon as a walker died after being taken ill. The 62-year-old Cork native is believed to have suffered a heart attack. He was amongst a group of three climbing near the Devil’s Punchbowl when he began to experience cardiac difficulties. Valentia Coastguard was alerted just before 1pm and sent both Kerry Mountain Rescue and the Shannon based helicopter Rescue 115 to the site. Dense fog meant the helicopter could not airlift the walker but it managed to drop Kerry Mountain Rescue volunteers and paramedics nearby. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was a busy few days for emergency services in the region as two further rescues were carried out on the Macgillicuddy’s Reeks on Saturday night. KMRT was called to assist six walkers who had encountered difficulty at 6pm and reached the group at 8pm. The team provided them with warm and dry clothing, food and drinks. Weather conditions on the mountain were dark and cold with wind and snow at the top of the descent routes. Protecting the group with ropes,
KMRT walked them off the mountain via the Devil’s Ladder route. On their descent, they happened upon a 38-year-old woman who had suffered a head injury and also helped her from the mountain. She was treated by ambulance upon returning to level ground and was subsequently removed to hospital for treatment.

Fundraiser
Glenflesk & Kilcummin Set For Oskar Night The actors are cast and the cameras are about to roll as preparations for the Oskars night, which is scheduled for the INEC on March 29, are well and truly underway. Close to 100 people attended the official launch of the event in Kilcummin clubhouse on Sunday evening - including the vast majority of the 70 actors who will take part. The two parishes of Kilcummin and Glenflesk are joining forces in a major fundraising event for their respective GAA clubs. Up to 2,000 people are expected to walk the red carpet on the night and it’s the first time anywhere in Munster that the glitzy event will be held. The audience will get to enjoy the premiere of seven eight-minute films starring the 72 actors who will feature in excerpts from some of the classic films - all professionally shot on film for the big screen. At the launch of the event on Sunday
The Gathering
evening in Kilcummin GAA’s clubhouse, the actors learned for the first time which film they’re about star in and what role they will play. The title of the seven films were also revealed, each of them a classic that is sure to produce some golden mo-
ments on screen. The seven films to feature on the night are Forrest Gump, The Snapper, Sister Act, A Few Good Women, The Field, Father Ted and Michael Collins. Actors will be coached for the next four weeks by Tipperary-born comedian
and actor Tom O’ Mahony, best known for his role as Tarquin on RTÉ’s Republic of Telly. All eight excerpts will be professionally filmed in various locations around Killarney over two weekends in March. Audience members will turn to critics for the night in the INEC and vote for their Oskar-winning performances at what is expected to be a huge event, run by the Dublin-based Kevin Rowe Events. “Already we can feel a great sense of excitement building among the actors,” said Niamh Dwyer of the organising committee. “The majority of them were in Kilcummin on Sunday to find out what role they’re playing and what lies ahead. It’s something really different and not alone will it bring together two great GAA clubs and create a wonderful sense of community spirit, it will also raise much-needed funds at the same time.”

There were smiles all around at the Torc Hotel in Killarney recently as John O’Donoghue presented Christy Lehane of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) with cheque to the value of €46,038.80. John, who was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), raised this incredible sum by organising a Reindeer Run on December 23. John held three fantastic runs in three different locations. There was a 5K, 10K and a half marathon held on the Flaggy Shore in Co. Clare. Alongside this, runs also took place in Caherdaniel and Killarney. “Two years ago if someone would have said to me that I would have raised over €46,000 for the IMNDA, I would have asked them what the IMNDA did,” John said. “But when I was diagnosed with MND the IMNDA were there. They offered me counselling and the counsellor was fantastic. They saved my life in a way. They put me on the right track. I wouldn’t have been able to do it on my own.” The IMNDA would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone for supporting John and the Reindeer Run. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of so many wonderful people, the vital funds raised will go a long way to help those living with MND.
Spa Set Dancers Still The Best There was more national glory for Spa at the Knockrea Arena, Sligo IT last weekend as the club’s set dancers claimed yet another All-Ireland title. A bumper crowd of over 1,500 savoured and enjoyed the unique atmosphere created by the All-Ireland Scór competition and were in turn treated to a wonderful evening’s entertainment from clubs representing each of the four provinces. From Kerry’s prospective it was a very special occasion as they were represented in three of the eight disciplines on the day. When the adjudicators made their final deliberations, the Kingdom had a familiar winner: the Spa set dancers. Spa’s winning team was made up by talented youngsters Erin Holland, Meghann Cronin, Siona Moynihan, Orlaith Spillane, Liam Spillane, Gary O’Sullivan, Cian O’Sullivan and Eoghan Mulvaney. The victory marked back-to-back national titles for the Tullig club.
MND is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order. The IMNDA is the only organisation of its kind in this country. It was set up in May 1985 to provide care and support to people with Motor Neurone Disease, their carers, families and friends. It’s often referred to as the 1,000 day disease as most people die within 1,000 days of being diagnosed. There are currently over 370 people living with MND in Ireland, 13 of whom are in Kerry. The IMNDA provides specialised services for people affected by this debilitating disease such as equipment on loan, financial assistance towards home help, advice and home visits by their three MND nurses. In order to provide these vital services the IMNDA depends heavily on the generosity of the public and supporters of the association who generate over 82% of its income.

The Importance Of Hearing Care Consider all the sounds that you hear every day - a child laughing, a bird singing, a friend chatting, or a great song on the radio - it is this symphony of sounds that makes life richer. Of all the five senses, our hearing is perhaps the most precious. If we lose it, we lose contact with the people we love and the world around us. You look after your teeth and eyes with regular check-ups – do the same for your ears! Hearing is an easy thing to take for granted. Occasionally we might miss a few words, but in general we move around effortlessly in everyday life, talking to one another, chatting over the phone or listening to the TV, without paying it a second thought. Things are not nearly as easy with a hearing loss. When hearing loss occurs, a simple thing like following a conversation in a restaurant or hearing the doorbell or telephone can become a real issue. You may start to experience all sorts of emotions, from worry to sadness and loneliness. You may also feel tired and irritable from having to concentrate just to hear what people are saying. Left unattended, hearing loss can ultimately lead to feelings of isolation and depression.
Hearing loss can creep up so slowly that the person affected is often the last one to know. In fact, family members, friends or colleagues are likely to spot the problem before you do. Watch out for the common signs. At work: Do you find yourself straining to keep up with conversations in a busy office? Socially: Do you feel that people are mumbling and sometimes need to ask them to say things twice? At home: Do you turn up the volume on the TV, or radio, louder than others in the room prefer? On the phone: Is it hard to hear the person on the other line and do you need to ask them to speak up? Outside: Do you have difficulty hearing sounds of nature, such as birds singing? So, what to do to take care of your hearing? Audiology Medical Services – Ireland’s leading independent audiology specialists – recommend that after the age of 45, you should have a hearing test every three years. Audiology Medical Services offer free adult hearing screening tests at all their clinics nationwide. Visit audiologymedicalservices.ie for more info or call 1800 501 501 for to book an appointment.

Letter The following is a poem written by Pat Munnelly from Delray Beach, Florida. Pat’s wife Ellen (née Lyne) is originally from Madam’s Hill and both she and Pat visit every year. Ellen recently retired as a principal from an elementary school that is just five miles away from where the recent shootings took place. She knew two of the children who were killed. “Coral Springs/Parkland is a large small town,” Pat said. “We are different. We need to stay mad, and if you’re not mad then something is wrong with you. We all know it will happen again, it’s just a matter of time, so let’s not just move on. We have lost more kids in school this year than soldiers in the Middle East.” Shame on You I didn’t have my children to make them targets at their schools So now I teach them school fear: how to run and how to hide and also to play dead My sister is a school teacher, she also teaches fear: where to run, where to hide, your book bags are your shields and, of course, please don’t forget to play dead You’re not allowed to cry Now our six year olds are trained for war - we thank you NRA. My brother is in law enforcement and he knows the day will come When he gets the call to race to school, he fears he is too late He prays to god along the way, ‘please no more massacres’ My neighbor is in ER and she also dreads this day She can hear more children crying, so many can’t be saved The NRA, the NRA, what brave souls they are They lock themselves behind closed doors to plan their strategies Their soldiers serve in congress, fine Christian men they are They preach pro-life at election time, such hypocrites they are There is no shame in congress, so we ask the free world’s help Protest at our embassies, our children need your help We really need your help Pat Munnelly Delray Beach, Florida

Letter Dear Editor, It was with great interest I read about the Killarney Tourism Economic Impact Review and the huge importance the industry has to the area. I also read how 30% of visitors to Killarney also take a day trip to Dingle. For most of these visitors, that would entail a drive along the R563 from Fossa Cross and over Listry Bridge. Is it not time, for once and for all, for our MEP, our Minister, all our local representatives, and our state bodies to act together and to replace the dangerous and structurally unsafe Listry Bridge with a bridge upon which two lanes of traffic can safely pass. We have had nothing but talk and feeble efforts with regards to this bridge and we are faced with yet another season of the spectacle of cars and tour buses reversing off the bridge to give way to oncoming traffic! Not good enough! Brendan O’Shea, Listry

Gold For Wilson At UK Nationals Last weekend, Killarney’s Wilson da Silva travelled to the UK to take on some of the best in Europe at the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu UK Nationals. It was his first outing as a purple belt having been recently promoted by John Kavanagh of Straight Blast Gym, Ireland. Wilson continued his winning streak from 2017 were he won numerous National and International medals, proving himself to be one of the most accomplished grapplers in Europe. He faced tough competition in Birmingham but as always he rose to the challenge and showed the warrior mentality he’s become so wellknown for. The Brazilian returned home with an impressive haul of three medals: gold in No Gi, silver in the Gi, and bronze in Absolute. Wilson, who trains out of SBG Killarney, was, as usual, very modest about his achievements and is already preparing for his next challenge. Mark O’Brien of SBG Killarney said everyone was “extremely

The Queen Joins Anna Wintour On The Front Row At London Fashion Week AW18 The 2018 Brit Awards just wrapped up and the full winners list has been revealed! There were big winners throughout the night, including Lorde and Kendrick Lamar, who both took home Best International Artist awards! Dua Lipa also had a huge night, taking home both British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. Despite mounting speculation over the status of their relationship, Cheryl, 34, and 24-year old Liam looked smitten as they attended the music extravaganza at London’s O2 Arena, but some were left wondering if it was all a stunt.
The 91-year-old monarch made her first ever appearance at London Fashion Week. She was there to present the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design to Central Saint Martins Fashion graduate, Richard Quinn. Prior to the awards ceremony, the Queen took her seat on the front row next to US Vogue editor Anna Wintour to watch Quinn’s latest AW18 instalment, which was filled with vibrant floral prints. The royal family’s Twitter account explained: “The Award, initiated in recognition of the role the fashion industry plays in society & diplomacy, will be awarded annually to an emerging British fashion designer who shows talent and originality, whilst demonstrating value to the community and/or sustainable policies.”
The Looks You Need To See From The Hottest Catwalk Shows London Fashion Week sets the bar for the next season and it seems that Autumn/Winter 2018 is all about going bold, colour and making a statement, in more ways than one. While catwalk shows are renowned for the weird and the wonderful, take note of these key trends and wait for them to filter down to the high street this Fall. From Christopher Bailey’s last Burberry show to glittery faces at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, see the highlights from February’s LFW shows.

Snapchat Stock Plummets As Celebrities Jump Ship
Shares of Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat, were down more than 6% Thursday morning after reality television star Kylie Jenner tweeted what criticism of the application’s controversial new redesign. The video messaging app’s new layout has been universally panned by users with a petition pleading with the company to revert to the old version
collecting 1.2 million signatures. In spite of the backlash, the company have said that they won’t be changing it back. “We completely understand the new Snapchat has felt uncomfortable for many,” the company said in response to the petition. However, it added, “this new foundation is just the beginning and we will always listen closely to find new ways to make the service better for everyone”.
Trump Corner Trump Wants To Give Guns To Teachers US President Donald Trump has reiterated his proposal to arm school teachers, tweeting yesterday that the measure would be a “great deterrent” to would-be killers. Trump was speaking at a listening session in Washington with survivors of last week’s Florida school shooting. He told attendees that teachers who were “very adept at using firearms” could be given weapons. “If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly,” he said. Speaking yesterday, Trump at first seemed to deny that he had proposed giving teachers guns, but then went on to expand on the proposal. “I never said ‘give teachers guns’ like was stated on Fake News @CNN & @
Never fails to entertain
nbc,” the president said. “What I said was to look at the possibility of giving ‘concealed guns to gun adept teachers with military or special training experience – only the best. “Twenty percent of teachers, a lot, would now be able to … immediately fire back if a savage sicko came to a school with bad intentions. Highly trained teachers would also serve as a deterrent to the cowards that do this. Far more assets at much less cost than guards.” He added: “A ‘gun free’ school is a magnet for bad people. ATTACKS WOULD END! History shows that a school shooting lasts, on average, 3 minutes. It takes police & first responders approximately 5 to 8 minutes to get to site of crime. Highly trained, gun adept, teachers/coaches would solve the problem instantly, before police arrive. GREAT DETERRENT!”
Indian Doctors Remove World’s Largest Brain Tumour
Doctors in Mumbai have successfully removed a 1.8kg brain tumour from a 31-yearold man. It’s believed it could be the largest in the world. The surgery, which lasted seven hours, took place at the Nair Hospital in the western city of Mumbai was not made public until yesterday as doctors were not sure if it had been successful. “Now it’s a matter of recovery but
he’s out of danger”, said chief of neurosurgery Dr Trimurti Nadkarni. Santlal Pal, a shopkeeper from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, had been living with the tumour for three years before his surgery was carried out. Mr Pal had lost his vision because of the tumour but hoped he would regain it as he continued to recover from the operation.
Stormzy Calls Out Theresa May At Brit Awards
English rapper Stormzy used his performance at the prestigious Brit awards to criticise UK Prime Minister over her handling of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Stormzy, who won Best British Male Solo Artist and Best British Album of the Year, took aim at May, saying “Yo, Theresa May, where’s that money for Grenfell? What, you thought we just forgot about Grenfell?” He also condemned the government. “You criminals, and you got the cheek to call us savages. You should do some jail time, you should pay some damages.” The rapper has been a vocal supporter of Grenfell
victims in the past, appearing on a charity single last year and also calling for justice at the Glastonbury music festival. Downing Street subsequently issued a statement defending Theresa May. “She’s determined that the public inquiry will discover not just what went wrong but why the voices of the people of Grenfell were ignored over so many years,” a spokesperson said. “In terms of support for the people affected by this tragedy, more than £58m has been committed.” 71 people were killed in the fire at Grenfell Tower.

Powder Sent To Meghan Markle “Racist Hate Crime” Police are treating the incident in which a letter containing white powder was sent to Meghan Markle as a racist hate crime. The letter was received this month at St James’s Palace in central London. The powder inside, which was feared to be anthrax, was found to be harmless after being examined by experts. It is understood the package contained a
US Actress Apologises To Ladies Of Killarney Popular American actress Troian Bellisario apologised to the ladies of Killarney during the week after refusing to take selfies with local fans. Bellisario, who was visiting Killarney with her actor husband Patrick J. Adams of Suits fame, was eating at restaurant and was unhappy that passers by tried to take pictures of her without her consent “To the ladies of Killarney, I am truly sorry,” she said on Twitter. “I
was a bit short and wouldn’t take a selfie with you. But I really don’t love it when people giggle at me through windows and sneakily take pictures of me eating fish and chips. I just like it when people ask first. Again. Sorry.” The Pretty Little Liar star later shared a photograph of the Gap of Dunloe with her 10.2 million Instagram followers. “Didn’t make it to Dingle,” she commented, “but the Gap of Dunloe is one of my favorite drives ever.”
racist note. In a statement, Scotland Yard said: “Officers are also investigating an allegation of malicious communications, which relates to the same package, and it is being treated as a racist hate crime. The matter is being investigated by officers from the Met’s counter-terrorism command.” Markle, who will marry Prince Harry in May, is from a mixed-race background.
Trudeau Withdraws Invite To Attempted Murderer The Canadian government has withdrawn an invitation to an alleged Sikh extremist to attend an official dinner with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Mr Trudeau, who is on his first state visit to India, said Jaspal Atwal should never have been invited to Thursday’s meal. Atwal, a Canadian citizen of Indian origin, was convicted and later acquitted of trying to assassinate an Indian minister in 1986. He is accused of having been a member of a now banned Sikh extrem-
ist group. Earlier this week he was photographed alongside Mr Trudeau’s wife, Sophie, and one of his cabinet ministers at an event in Mumbai. Mr Trudeau has faced criticism that his government is soft on Sikh extremists during his week-long trip. “Obviously we take this situation extremely seriously,” Mr Trudeau told reporters. “As soon as we found out we rescinded the invitation immediately.” He said the party member who had extended the invitation “took full responsibility” for the mistake.
Healy-Rae: Ireland Will “Topple Into Irish Sea” Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae has said that Ireland “will topple into the Irish Sea” if the government puts any more people in Dublin. “It will have to happen,” he added. Healy-Rae was speaking on the PMB motion regarding Dublin transport. “Dublin traffic is a serious problem,” he said. “I have long asked the cause. The obvious cause is continuous policies by this Government, by past Governments, and if the 2040 plan materialises, it will also be by future Governments. It is because everything revolves around Dublin. Continuous policies have directed in-
vestment to ensure that industry and business continue to come to this city. “Most likely, when one listens to Kerry radio each morning, the first news headlines at 7 a.m. will announce another hundred jobs or 500 jobs for Dublin, but it is very rare when there is a job directed towards Kerry or the west.” “I believe the Government gave €135 million for a glorified footpath in Dublin,” he continued. “That is more than we would get for the roads programme for the year in the county of Kerry. God Almighty, is anyone going to stand up and say, ‘Stop’?”
€70k Stolen From Wexford Slot Machines An estimated €70,000, most of which was in coins, was stolen in a daring raid on an amusement arcade in Wexford, it has been revealed. The thieves also caused around €270,000 worth of criminal damage to the premises. It is believed that the criminals disabled the alarm system by cutting wires at a nearby Eir
phone site before breaking into Courtown Amusement Centre in the early hours of Saturday morning. They then cracked open slot machines, collected the coins and escaped in a vehicle. The gang also inadvertently damaged additional wires which meant local residents were left without internet access for three days.

HOUSE MONTH OF THE
ADD COLOUR TO BATHROOM DÉCOR
The owners wanted to create a timeless home that would age well, the couple had gathered lots of pieces of furniture over the years. It was only a matter of moving things around or finding a new place in another part of the Home, to improve the flow. The interior design scheme was chosen to bring out the character of the home, choosing materials suited to the existing interior decor and furniture and also with the introduction of new design elements. Space planning and room layouts are often areas that are over-looked and neglected, but it is one of the key components of an interior design project as seen on this job. The correct colour scheme and selection of fabrics helps to bring everything together and disguise any mistakes.
SITTING ROOM''THE THINKING ROOM'' It was just a question of making better use of the space, the previous layout
of the room was not working. Changing this was crucial in order to make the room flow, it changed the whole look of the space and made it more functional. The next step was finding a place for the paintings. A gallery wall was created to display all the beautiful art the owners had collected over the years
METALLIC ELEMENTS COMBINED WITH EARTHY COLOURS The metallic theme runs through the building. The master bedroom was made richer and intimate looking by introducing a metallic sheen fabric from Belgium and textured wallpaper from the US.
SPA LOOK BATHROOM The main bathroom has been turned into a private spa by putting in the high panelling and a funky wallpaper. The idea here is to take the mind off the everyday thoughts and bring you to a place that feels different and helps you to relax.
THEMED BEDROOMS All the upstairs bedrooms are designed differently in order to give each area a theme. This helps to make the overall interior design scheme visually more attractive. The long boys bedroom was made cosier by adding a custom built bed and beams, done by a local carpenter. The old wardrobes were painted the same as the walls to bring them up to date.
DINING AREA The curtain fabric of the dining area helps to bring the outside in. The mauve stripe material was a special order as well as the roman blinds. The cashmere colour roman blinds have a herringbone design. This connects well with the wallpaper pattern. Layering different textures, fabrics and colours has helped to create a sense of luxury, warmth and making this house into family home. Interior design by

THE LATEST STYLISH BATHROOM
TRENDS FOR 2018 ADD COLOUR TO BATHROOM DÉCOR “Colour in the bathroom is an upcoming trend – or rather a revival,” according to Marlene Presa, UK marketing manager of Villeroy & Boch. Colour is definitely sneaking back into our lives and our interiors which living with our grey skies can only be a good thing. Colour and texture can be introduced in a number of ways, from geometric tiles to coloured shower panels, vanity tops and basins, or even with accessories.
LUXURY STANDALONE BATHS The star of many contemporary schemes is the freestanding tub. If you’re short on space, designers have created options that work in small spaces. It’s possible to choose anything from a compact slipper bath to more luxurious bateau or roll top. Continue on page 40
From mixing metals to black and white and spa bathrooms, if you're planning a bathroom renovation for the New Year make sure you take heed of these luxury bathroom design ideas for 2018.
Home & Living - February 23, 2018
THE LATEST STYLISH
BATHROOM TRENDS FOR 2018 SLEEK WOOD EFFECTS Everything from Scandi design influences to the trend for natural materials has driven the popularity of sleek wood. Timber’s versatility has been another driving force, with pale planks creating a light, airy look, knotted and gnarled woods bringing a rustic feel and darker tones being used to add a shot of drama. It brings warmth to a contemporary scheme, and authenticity to a traditional bathroom. With tiles looking more and more like the real thing you can have the best of both worlds.
GO BLACK AND WHITE It’s time to fall back in love with monochrome. Edgy black bathrooms are all over Instagram but the black and white theme lets you embrace this trend without going the full hog! Used for accents,
surfaces and focal-point pieces, they’re the perfect way to introduce moody tones without sacrificing light from a space.
SPA BATHROOMS Design experts agree there has been a shift in the role of the bathroom from practical room to additional living area. As it has become a place to spend more time relaxing, its decor has changed, too. Soft furnishings, storage that resembles furniture and chic lighting fixtures are now the norm alongside indulgent rainfall showers, recessed mirrors and open shelving. The bathroom is no longer just a small room to wash in, with increasingly busy lives it has become a retreat, so it makes sense to include an indulgent drench shower or spa-style bath.
MIX MATERIALS Bathrooms are the perfect space to explore the use of mixed materials, with taps and accessories for the bathroom now in every colour metal you can imagine, and the use of mirrors as a feature is a great chance to apply the trend of mixed metals.
JACK AND JILL BATHROOMS Twin features, such as his and hers basins, double-ended baths and pairs of cabinets are a nod to the styling seen in boutique hotels. As well as being practical, these also appeal to our symmetrical selves. As we all know, every minute counts in the morning
and although we may all crave his and hers bathrooms for the sake of our marriages, its not really an option for most of us. The Jack and Jill sinks are the next best thing.
INSTALL A WET ROOM Opting for a wet room in place of a shower enclosure continues to be a big trend, but there’s a move to add more features and make it less of a plain space, add some storage space and a feature with some recessed selves. There’s also an emphasis on unique glass effects that provide extra character and style.

Have you ever opened up a gardening book and been bamboozled by the names? Have you wondered why they have to be so complicated, and in Latin? Well, just imagine if all plants only had a common name… We would be very confused! Take, for example, Bluebell. In Ireland it can be one of two species of bulb, in Australia it’s a climber and in America it’s a Mertensia…. If I say I love Spirea, do you think of Sorbaria, Astilbe, goatsbeard or an actual Spirea? So how did we arrive at the correct names we have? We owe our binomial nomenclature, to be posh, to a gentleman named Carl Linneaus, who was born in Sweden in 1707. He studied medicine and botany, which was one of the required subjects when studying medicine. At the age of 30 he developed a system of classification for all organisms, which is more or less still the one we use. Unfortunately for us, Latin was the scientific language of the time so this is what has been kept. The genus and species names are always italicised (something about which I am very lazy) or, in handwriting, underlined. When you look at a plant name, for example Cornus sanguinea, the first part denotes the genus, which is a large group of plants sharing similar chacteristics. The second part is the species. The species name is often descriptive, in this case sanguinea comes from the Latin for blood as Cornus sanguinea has brightly coloured stems. The species
name can relate to many different characteristics: where a plant comes from (japonica - Japan, occidentalis - America, arabis – Arabia) or colour (alba - white, purpurea – purple), where it grows (saxatile – rocks, campestris – fields) or how it grows (fruticosa – bushy, repens – creeping) and so on. There are a few curveballs thrown in too, such as when a plant is named after a person, e.g. fortuneii – Robert Fortune (who is credited with bringing us tea) or darwinii - Charles Darwin. The RHS have a lovely book called Latin for Gardeners, which is a gem if you’re interested in this type of thing! Now is the time to start thinking about the flower garden. It’s the perfect time to plant begonia bulbs in pots, as starting them off in the greenhouse or even shed will get you a much earlier flowering time. The depressed part of the bulb is the top, which is unusual. Do not plant them too deep! Dahlias are also available currently. Again it is a good idea to start them off indoors, as they are not very hardy if we get a late frost. Plant them with their crown level to the soil and when shoots appear only leave five grow. I know it seems wrong but this will produce strong plants with a lot of flowers. As Dahlias grow, pinch the top of the shoots out to encourage bushy growth. All dahlias have different speeds at which they grow, so don’t despair if one seems very slow compared to others!

A Reader’s Short Story My name is Joe and I work for the Killarney Advertiser. This is a free magazine that is distributed throughout Killarney and the surrounding area on a weekly basis. In the magazine there’s a game of Sudoku with a prize of €30. This has proved hugely popular and is done by hundreds of people each week. The magazine comes out on Friday evening and the Sudoku has to be submitted before 5.30pm on the following Tuesday. For some time now I have become aware of a person standing on the pavement outside the office on Tuesday evening. Now and again he checks his watch and as 5.30pm draws close, he looks in the window. When he sees me coming to lock up the front door, he rushes in and puts his entry into the Sudoku barrel. I watched him do this for weeks and one day curiosity got the best of me. I asked him why he always left his submission so late. “The Bible says that the first shall come last and the last first,” says he, “and I am a man of great faith”. “I see,” says I, “and tell me how many times have you won this competition.” “I have never won it,” says he, “but still I am a man of great faith.” “What would you do with the thirty euro if you won it?” I asked out of curiosity. “Why I would buy the best bottle of whiskey I could find for the money and enjoy every drop of it.” “I see,” says I. “Have you ever considered that the Lord is saving your life by not allowing you to win the €30? Why you might drink too much and get killed crossing the road? Or kill someone else driving your car while drunk?” He looked at me in awe and said, “Sweet Jesus you are so right. There I was thinking of the whiskey and getting drunk while all along the Lord was doing his best to keep me safe by not allowing me to win. You, my friend, have great foresight. I can see now what I have been doing wrong and will mend my ways. Next week when I win I will take the wife out to lunch and we will both enjoy the money.” So next week, as usual, he was the last one to place his entry in the barrel. His entry was drawn out but unfortunately he did not live to enjoy it. When he saw that he had won in the Advertiser he got a heart attack from the excitement and died. However, the €30 did not go to waste as his wife and her best friend both had a lovely lunch from it. Michael O’Meara

Sweden WRC: Neuville Takes Points Lead Thierry Neuville secured his first victory of the 2018 WRC season at Rally Sweden last weekend. The victory puts him on top of the championship leader board. The talking point throughout the weekend was focused on the Citroen driver, Waterford man Craig Breen, who took his bestever WRC result in second, with Hyundai’s Andreas Mikkelsen completing the podium. Breen kept rally leader Neuville in check all weekend with three stage wins to his credit. Breen’s teammates Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle had an altercation with a snow bank on the Saturday afternoon loop that lost them time and eventually a technical issue led to their retirement. Up to that point they had struggled for pace.
Rally Sweden is a specialist rally more suited to Scandinavian drivers which made Breen’s second place all the more impressive. The talking point after the event was when reigning champion Sebastian Ogier incurred a penalty for deciding to start the Power Stage late. He ultimately placed runner-up while running just outside the points but was promoted back to 10th after teammate Elfyn Evans picked up a late-arrival penalty of his own. This controversial move secured Ogier five valuable championship points. Final Results: 1 - Thierry Neuville, Hyundai. 2 - Craig Breen, Citroen (19.8s). 3 - Andreas Mikkelsen, Hyundai (28.3s).
Championship Standings: 1 - Thierry Neuville, Hyundai (41) 2 - Sebastien Ogier, M-Sport Ford (31) 3 - Jari-Matti Latvala, Toyota (23) 4 - Esapekka Lappi, Toyota (23) 5 - Ott Tanak, Toyota (21) 6 - Andreas Mikkelsen, Hyundai (21) 7 - Craig Breen, Citroen (20) 8 - Kris Meeke, Citroen, (17) 9 - Hayden Paddon, Hyundai (10) 10 - Elfyn Evans M-Sport Ford (8)

Pure-Electric Volvo Hatch By 2019
Volvo will launch an all-new, standalone, pure-electric car in 2019. The new model will be heavily based on the 40.2 concept pictured, and the production version will receive only minor design changes. Looking more like a four-door coupe than a traditional hatchback, the new 40.2 battery-powered car will be positioned above Volvo’s forthcoming S40 and V40 core models. It’s based on the Swedish car-maker’s new Compact Modular Architecture
(CMA), which was created to underpin pure-electric vehicles, but Volvo has not confirmed what battery will power its 40.2, nor how powerful its electric motors will be. The announcement of Volvo’s first pure-electric model follows on from Volvo’s declaration that it will electrify every model in its line up from 2019. Once launched, it’s expected the next pure-electric offered by Volvo will be a battery-powered version of the recently launched XC40 SUV.

Ladies View Industries
started off as a small tourist craft business. To be sure they were entrepreneurs of their day... selling homespun shawls to the ever increasing passing tourist trade. From the early days it saw the pony and trap’s bringing curious visitors. To the last century, when the bus routes were extended, so did the shop. The photo features the extentisons to the building in the 1950’s. Ladies View : The location derives its name from the pleasure expressed by Queen Victoria’s Ladies-in-Waiting, on their visit there in 1861. From the shop, it is without doubt, one of the most beautiful vistas in the world. Worth a visit...

O’Connor: I Think Most Of Us Feel Like We’ve Improved Game In, Game Out Following Saturday’s 107-84 win over LYIT Donegal, the Scotts Lakers are two wins away from claiming the Division 1B title in their first season back in the National League. Adam Moynihan caught up with club captain Philip O’Connor to find out the secret behind their current run of form. Let’s start with Saturday night. It was another comprehensive win. What stood out for you about the team’s performance? Just the all round play of everyone really. We broke the 100 point mark at home for the first time this year and I think it’s only the second time this season we’ve done it. Everyone put in a good performance on the night and we’ve probably shown a bit of consistency in the last four or five games which we’ve been lacking all year. Just to get everyone firing on the same level was good. There has been a bit of a turnaround since the league was divided into two. I know you’re possibly playing against weaker teams but what would you attribute that new-found form to? There is obviously the fact that there are a few weaker teams but I would think that there are two or three teams at the top of 1A that would be a cut above the rest, and they’ve shown that throughout the year. There’s a three-way tie at the top at the moment. I think the rest of the teams are on a similar level but we’ve just found a better vein of form than we had at the start of the campaign. A lot of guys like myself and Mark Greene who had just come back into the league were finding
our feet for the first few games. Maybe we’ve just learned how to win games. You had a change in coach midway through the season with Cormac O’Donoghue coming in. What has Cormac brought to the team? Have things been different under him? I think the main thing Cormac would have brought was a pure understanding of the league, having coached in it and won at this level before and being so successful with other teams as well. Dailian Mason has stepped in at the point guard position as a replacement for Mihail Kapitanov. How do you think he’s done? He’s been very good in pretty much every game he’s played. He’s added an awful lot of scoring and pace to our team that we didn’t have, and he gives us an extra option on defence as well. He’s been a nice addition. You have two games left in the league. It would obviously be nice to get a bit of silverware. How would you rate your chances at this stage? Well, we beat Dublin Lions (tomorrow’s opponents) on the opening day of the season but they’ve also had a bit of resurgence up until last week when they actually lost a game. But they’ve been one of the form sides since Christmas too so that’s a tough
game going up to Dublin. We lost to Kilkenny on the second day of a backto-back up there but I think we wouldn’t be afraid of either team. If we get a win in Dublin, we’ll be coming home with a chance to take it all and that’s a big incentive. I’m sure we can do the business. There’s also a playoff at the end of the season between some of the top teams in Division 1A and 1B. Would it be nice to get another crack off one or two of the bigger teams in the league? Not to single them out but Ballincollig had a big win the last day (against Killorglin) and we were fairly disappointed with our performance against them in the cup semi-final. Just for that reason alone it’d be nice to get another go off them because we didn’t do ourselves justice on that particular night. On a personal note, how do feel you’ve done so far and what are your goals for the rest of the season? My goal is always to stay fit. I broke my toe in the first game so that didn’t go too well! Since then it’s been fine. I just want to keep improving. I think most of us feel like we’ve improved game in, game out and we’re learning to adapt to the league. Hopefully I can become more influential and just keep winning games.

28 Apiece For Bootle And Mason In Big Home Win Words & Pics: Eamonn Keogh Scotts Lakers took another step closer to securing the Division 1B Shield with a comfortable 23-point victory over LYIT Donegal in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre last Saturday night. Apart from a close opening quarter, it was a match where the home side’s dominance wasn’t fully threatened by the visitors despite the best efforts of their outstanding American Chaz Watler. The early exchanges were even as both teams matched each other score for score. Dailian Mason and Mark Greene were on target from threepoint range as Donegal’s Chaz Watler showed his ability from the outset. With 2:30 left on the clock, the sides were level at 24 points each but Antuan Bootle and Mark Greene finished the quarter strongly for Scotts Lakers. They scored eleven points to just one from LYIT and the home side led 35-25 at the end of the first period. Dailian Mason continued his impressive scoring prowess, slotting two quick three-pointers early in the second quarter. Dan Griffin, Philip O’Connor,
Andrew Fitzgerald and Cian Clernon also chipped in with important baskets to keep the Lakers in front. For the visitors it was Chaz Watler, Mark Cannon, Jonathon McGill and Dillon Muldoon who featured prominently and Scotts Lakers led 56-45 with 2:10 left in the first half. The Killarney side finished the half stronger with Bootle and Griffin on target and the Lakers enjoyed a 63-47 advantage at the interval. The Lakers extended their lead to 72-51 early in the third quarter with another three-pointer from Dailian Mason and a big basket from Andrew Fitzgerald. Accurate three-point shooting from Mason, Mark Greene and Con O’Mahony kept the momentum in Scotts Lakers’ favour while Antuan Bootle also added some scores to help the home side to a 83-59 lead as the game entered the final quarter. The final period was a mere formality. Bootle and Mason continued to dominate as the Lakers led 93-67 midway through the quarter. Coach Cormac O’Donoghue ran his full bench with Dylan O’Sullivan and Billy Wiseman adding further baskets. Cian Clernon was on target with a big three-pointer and then set Antuan Bootle up for a spectacular alley-hoop score. Dailian Mason finished the
scoring for Lakers with another three-pointer, his sixth of the night and Lakers’ twelfth. LYIT were equally impressing from long range scoring 10 three-pointers in the game. It was a significant win that keeps the Scotts Lakers on top of the league table with Paris Texas Kilkenny their nearest challengers. With just two regular season games remaining, Lakers are in control of their own destiny and travel to Dublin Lions this Saturday, February 24 before welcoming Kilkenny for a possible Shield title decider in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Sunday, March 4. Lakers scorers: Antuan Bootle (28), Dailian Mason (28), Mark Greene (17), Andrew Fitzgerald (11), Dan Griffin (9), Cian Clernon (5), Con O’Mahony (3), Philip O’Connor (2), Billy Wiseman (2) and Dylan O’Sullivan (2). LYIT Donegal top scorers: Chaz Watler (40), Jonathan McGill (9) and Dillon Muldoon (9).

Blues & Celts Both Back To Winning Ways

Premier A
Waterford Crystal 1-2 Killarney Celtic (AET) (Celtic Park)
Killarney Athletic 4-1 Mastergeeha (Celtic Park)
After the previous weekend’s devastating defeat to Dingle we really needed a reaction against Mastergeeha and, all in all, I felt we did well. With six games to go and ground to make up on the leaders, every game is like a cup final at this stage. Realistically we’d be expected to beat Geeha but our attitude was good and we played some decent football at times. A brace from Shane Lynch had us in a comfortable enough position early on so it was disappointing to concede a penalty just before half time. Chris Egan converted the spot kick and while we weren’t panicking at the break, you’re never really safe at 2-1. Geeha were keeping things fairly tight at the back in the second half so it was definitely a relief when Lynch headed home his third. Aidan O’Mahony was denied his first ever Athletic goal when his towering header was stopped on the line in the 90th minute but fellow defender Cillian O’Regan was on hand to apply the finish and make it 4-1. It wasn’t spectacular but a win is a win. We have Fenit away this weekend and nothing else but three points
will do. They knocked us out of the Munster Junior on penalties earlier on in the season so they’re a decent side. We’ll have to be on top of our game to secure a result. It was a bad weekend for Geeha all round as relegation rivals Tralee Dynamos picked up a surprise 5-4 win over Listowel Celtic in Cahermoneen. With Kenmare already after pulling out of the league, it looks like a straight shootout between Dynamos and Mastergeeha to see who will avoid the drop. The sides are currently level on nine points in second last, although Geeha still have two games in hand. Celtic win after extra time Elsewhere Killarney Celtic are safely through to the quarter finals of the Munster Junior Cup following a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Waterford Crystal. Danny Roche gave the Celts the lead in Ozier Park in the 26th minute but an equaliser midway through the second half meant the game went to extra time. Super sub Stephen McCarthy came off the bench to score the winner to the delight of the travelling fans and now Celtic will face either Cahir Park (Cork) or Southend United (Waterford) away from home in the last eight.

The Munster Junior was always a competition that Celtic wanted to win but following the disappointment of the FAI Junior Cup exit, it has taken on even greater significance. Before that huge quarter final, which is scheduled to take place on March 10/11, Celtic have the league to worry about. On Saturday they host fellow title contenders Dingle in Celtic Park and a win would go a long way towards securing their place in the league final. Dingle are strong at the moment, however, and are sure to provide a stern test for Eoghan Donnellan’s team.

Black Valley Girl Set For The Big Leagues
Sport
Adam Moynihan speaks to teen sensation Hannah O’Donoghue about her big move to Cork City Talented local sports star Hannah O’Donoghue has been snapped up by Women’s National League side Cork City and has immediately set her sights on breaking into the first team. O’Donoghue, who also plays football for Kerry, has been training with the Cork club for the past few months and put pen to paper when the team visited Killarney for a pre-season training trip. A huge crowd turned out at Celtic Park on Saturday as the Black Valley native was officially unveiled as a Cork City player, while supporters were also treated to a keenly contested friendly between the reigning Women’s FAI Cup holders and Celtic’s U-16/17 boys. Speaking to the Advertiser during the week, Hannah, who is still just 17, was full of praise for her coaches and mentors at Celtic. “They’ve been great,” she said. “Donal O’Doherty managed us and we got very close in the National Cup a few years, and Caroline Kissane was very good to me as well. Ramona Keogh basically sorted me
out with Cork. She was like a bit of an agent. I have to thank Premier Autoparts as well who are kindly sponsoring me.” The prodigious young athlete said training so far has been “enjoyable” - although it took some time to find her feet at the beginning. “It’s very high intensity. All the drills are done at speed and there’s a lot of possession involved. At the start I was a bit rusty because I hadn’t played soccer in a while. It took a while to sort my touch out but it kinda got a bit easier after a few trainings.” As well her commitments with Cork City, the Kerry seniors and the Kerry minors (for whom she scored a ridiculous 3-6 on Sunday), the Beaufort player is also currently studying for her Leaving Cert. Hannah certainly has plenty on her plate and she admitted that it is “kind of hard to juggle everything”. She’s keen to make her mark in Cork, however, and take advantage of this great opportunity. “It’s the highest standard in Ireland,” she continued.
“I just want to keep on improving and hopefully get a bit of game time. But once I keep getting better each week I’ll be happy enough.” And how will the proud Kerrywoman feel about representing the Leesiders? “I never really thought I’d play for Cork,” she confessed. “It’ll probably take a while to get used to!” Cork City begin their 2018 Women’s National League campaign away to Galway on Sunday, March 11.

Draymond Green laughs during Fergie’s rendition of the national anthem.
In a battle between two of the league’s biggest superstars, LeBron James emerged victorious at the annual NBA All-Star game on Sunday night. This year’s format differed from previous East versus West exhibition games as the top player from each conference got to choose his own teammates. James’ team eventually ran out 148-145 winners in an unusually competitive match. All-Star games in general are infamous for the lack of defence played but, in an interesting twist, both sets of players seemed to be actually trying to win. This was evidenced by the final play of the game when Stephen Curry tried to find an open look for a game-levelling three. Both team captain LeBron and Curry’s Golden State Warriors teammate Kevin

Durant locked the former two-time league MVP down, smothering him in the corner to close out the game. James was named MVP on the back of an impressive 29-point outing while his former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate Kyrie Irving had 13 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Detroit Piston centre Andre Drummond added 14 points on 7 for 7 shooting. One of the biggest talking points from the evening came before the main event had even tipped off. Pop singer Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas treated LA’s Staples Centre to a unique rendition of the American national anthem and her version quickly drew ridicule from observers on social media. Players and celebrity attendees were seen
struggling to contain their laughter as the singer blasted out an unconventionally sultry version of the Star-Spangled Banner (check out our Twitter @ AdvertiserSport for the video). Fergie later apologised for her performance: “I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA,” she said in a statement. “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.” Elsewhere Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns claimed the coveted three-point contest with a record-breaking tally of 28 points out of a possible 34 while Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz won the Slam Dunk contest.
It’s My Bobsled & I’m Taking It Home
Was Sergio Agüero Spat At By Fan? Manchester City are considering legal action after striker Sergio Agüero was allegedly verbally abused and spat at by a Wigan Athletic fan after City’s shock FA Cup defeat on Monday night. Agüero was caught on camera apparently striking out at the man as hundreds of Wigan fans flooded the pitch at the final whistle but it has been revealed that the Argentinean will not face charges from the FA. There were ugly scenes all round as City fans were also seen hurling advertising hoardings onto the pitch. An investigation into the events is pending with Wigan police appealing for anyone with information to come forward. In a statement, Wigan chief executive Jonathan Jackson said: “Whilst we appreciate that the vast majority of supporters who ran on to the pitch did so spontaneously to celebrate a famous victory, we were disappointed with the action of a minority of supporters who acted in an inappropriate manner. “Player and staff safety is of paramount importance and we will conduct a full investigation.”
City were overwhelming favourites to beat the League One side but a late goal from Northern Irish international Will Grigg put paid to any aspirations they had of completing a historic Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League quadruple. Manager Pep Guardiola was also involved in a heated exchange with his Wigan counterpart Paul Cook at the end of the first half. The pair had to be separated by backroom staff as they walked down the tunnel but, speaking after the game, the Catalan insisted that “nothing happened”.
The Jamaican women’s bobsled team were left in limbo last weekend when their coach suddenly departed and insisted that she would have to be paid if the athletes wanted to use her sled. Sandra Kiriasis took everyone by surprise when she quit due to a dispute and subsequently claimed that the bobsled was hers. Luckily, the most popular beer company in Jamaica, Red Stripe, came to the rescue. They tweeted the Jamaican team telling them they could put the sled on Red Stripe’s “tab.”

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy
A relatively quieter weekend last weekend rugby-wise as the NatWest 6 Nations took a break and the PRO14 came to the fore. All four provinces were in action in their respective conferences, minus the international contingent who enjoyed a well-earned break ahead of the return of the 6 Nations tomorrow. Ulster lost yet again at home this season but this time Edinburgh were the victors. Ulster are having a nightmare of late in terms of results. Elsewhere, Connacht lost to Italian outfit Zebre in a huge shock at the Showgrounds. Leinster beat the excellent Scarlets at

Furlong Return Boosts Irish Hopes the RDS by a solitary score, continuing their good run with James Lowe in excellent form. Munster lost in Cardiff in a fairly woeful match which saw Munster struggle with the basics. With Conor Murray missing, Duncan Williams had a shocker and one has to worry about scrum half cover should Murray get injured at any stage. It was a truly dreadful first half strewn with many handling errors. Van Graan certainly shook things up at half time, however, the returning Bleyendaal’s last minute penalty earning Munster a possibly undeserved bonus point. They will have
to work hard this week to prepare for the visit of Glasgow. With no love loss between the sides, Munster will need to up their game and make a few hard calls as to who should start. Tomorrow the 6 Nations returns and Ireland host Wales at the Aviva. This promises to be an excellent game and with Tadhg Furlong returning, Ireland will be confident ahead of the arrival of Warren Gatland’s men. France take on Italy tonight looking for a bonus point win and Scotland host England. Another exciting round in prospect!

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s Club Club President Jack Buckley is presently putting the finishing touches to a fabulous trip to South Africa in October next, Jack has still got a few places available and should any of our Membership express an interest in getting more information about this trip which Jack originally outlined to us all at the Club AGM in November last, they can get it by contacting Jack via the Club reception. The recent very extensive Clubhouse improvements which have been carried out by the Club Council, and in particular Council Chairman Mike Daly with assistance from Club employee Mike O’Keeffe and the Ladies Committee have been very favourably commented on, and those improvements have totally upgraded the appearance of the Clubhouse. They will make for a much more enjoyable and comfortable experience for both Members and Visitors alike. We would also like to pass on our congratulations to our Club Member Jimmy Kelly from Tralee who was a contestant on last weekend’s version of the Winning Streak T.V. programme. The Competition on Sunday last was a singles stableford competition on Mahony’s Point, it was a Club sponsored competition and was a fundraiser for our Men’s Club Choir, the Competition was played in very good conditions and the scoring was exceptional given the recent and prolonged period of bad weather. The condition of the course was excellent given that bad weather and Enda Murphy and his staff are to be commended for such, which goes to show how resilient our Mahony’s Point course is. The winner with the incredible score of 43 points and playing off of 5 handicap was Gerard Hogan, who went around in 2 under par Gross, Gerard deserves our heartiest congratulations for his superb win in the Competition.

On The Ball Dr Crokes Club EAST KERRY SUPER LEAGUE ROUND 2: Dr Crokes v Gneeveguilla . Even though we had a comprehensive win over Gneeveguilla at the end things could have been much closer if our opponents had taken their goal chances in the first half. On the other side of the field we bulged the back of the net on a few occasions. There was plenty up and down play in the first half but we got through for the major scores to put us well ahead when the referee blew for half time. Both sides matched one another for scores in the second half scoring 1-8 each but our first half total and Gneeveguilla inability to score goals from good chances in that first thirty minutes left us good winners at the end. SCOR TEAM: Well done to our Scór Quiz team who took part in the All Ireland Final in Sligo last weekend. Congratulations to Spa dancers who are All Ireland Champions second year running. HEALTH AND WELLBEING: Monday
26th February at 8pm in the Dromhall Hotel Eileen Buckley will give a short presentation on addictions and our guest speaker on the night will be Niall McNamee. Fossa GAA SENIORS: Fossa played Firies in Round Two of the East Kerry Superleague on Saturday in Fossa. This was a very entertaining game of football, even though the conditions were heavy both sides kicked some great scores. Fossa comfortable winners on a score of 4-11 to 0-13. This was a good team display with the older players encouraging the younger players and leading by example, they will be happy with the start made to the season. MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE - DIV 3B: Fossa played Gneeveguilla on Saturday in the opening round of the County league, the game was switched to the Fossa old field due to the home team’s field being unplayable. Fossa ran out winners on a score line of 4-10 to 10 points. The next game is in two weeks at home. FOSSA SENIOR LADIES: Fossa senior ladies got their year off to a start Saturday, brushing off the winters cobwebs in the Paudie O’ Shea invitational tournament. Played in Fossa, this was a truly an international affair with Fossa, Funcheon Gales of North Cork, Berlin and Liverpool playing. The hosts played Liverpool Ladies first and were slow to start against the strong Liverpool ladies. The game was over by half time in reality but our girls did play a lot better in the second half in preparation for the shield final. The second game of the day saw the young North Cork girls overcome the Berlin side easily. The Cup final saw a real happy team from Liverpool, who have taken the time between the matches to freshen up on tactics take control early and run out easy winners.

Killarney Legion E.K.SUPERLEAGUE: Killarney Legion 2-9 Kilcummin 0-9. A positive start for the seniors as they saw off a competitive Kilcummin in Derreen. Despite the heavy conditions both sides served up a lively encounter but two Legion goals - one in each half proved to be decisive. What was especially pleasing for the home side was the inclusion of a number of very young panel members namely Luke O Donoghue, Cian Sheahan, Michael Pierce and the welcome return of Peter and Conor McCarthy all of whom made an impact, a good sign for the future with a good number of others yet to return to action. Another notable feature was the level of fitness shown in what were testing conditions of stamina and concentration. The panel appears to have a very nice balance of seasoned and new players and we look forward to them progressing. Another good test awaits them this coming Sunday 25th.Feb away to Gneeveguilla, all support welcome. MINORS: The minors’ year got off to a losing start as they went down to the Cordal/Scartaglin combination in their first outing. It was always going to be an uphill struggle as the panel was minus six players and in the end this was too much to overcome.LOTTO: Winning no’s - 4,11,15,21. No winner. Next week’s jackpot €,500.
Spa Club East Kerry Super League: Spa 4-15 Scartaglen 2-7. Spa took on Scartaglen under floodlights at home on Friday night. The boys in blue took a commanding lead in the first half bolstered by goals from Conor Stack John Falvey and David Spillane, as well as an imperious display of passing and point scoring by Mike Stam O Donoghue. However, the Scartaglen boys backboned by the veterans Mike Coakley and Padraig Reidy started brightly in the second half scoring 2.3 in quick succession. However, Spa aided by another well taken goal by Mikey Moynihan to increase the scoreline. Upcoming Fixtures: East Kerry Superleague (back game): Spa v Kenmare in Spa on Sunday February 25th at 11am. Minor Co League: Spa v Beaufort in Spa on Saturday February 24th at 4pm.
