Greenway “A Lifeline For Iveragh Peninsula”

Pics: Don MacMonagle

Kerry County Council has confirmed that the planning process for the South Kerry Greenway will finally commence before the end of the month. The Kells Viaduct on the Ring of Kerry, which hasn’t been crossed by a train since 1960, forms part of the proposed route. The response was given at this Month’s Meeting of the Council to Councillor Michael Cahill who had submitted a “Notice of Motion” on the matter. Councillor Cahill requested the Council to expedite the Greenway and take into consideration the phenomenal success of the Mayo Greenway and also the new Waterford Greenway which

attracted 250,000 visitors during 2017. The Fianna Fáil Councillor described the South Kerry Greenway as the county’s biggest and most important Tourism project. “This multi-million euro project is a lifeline for Caherciveen and the Iveragh Peninsula, an area that needs jobs and investment to stem the tide of emigration,” he said. It is anticipated that it will take approximately 6 month’s before a decision will issue from An Bord Pleanála. The news comes in the same week it was revealed that landowners who were previously opposed to the related North Kerry Greenway from West Limerick into Listowel are now fully behind the project.

WELCOME HOME IAN!

41-Year-Old Man Found Dead In Town Centre A man who was known to sleep rough in Killarney was found dead in the town centre on Monday. He was 41. A female resident of the nearby Courtyard Complex discovered the body of Robert Tatarczuch, a Polish national, in a refuse storage area in the Fair Hill area. Attempts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene by a GP from Southdoc at 1pm. He was subsequently removed to University General Hospital. A post mortem was carried out by Assistant State Pathologist, Margot Bolster and although gardaí are awaiting detailed results, foul play has

been ruled out. Mr Tatarczuch first came to Ireland 13 years ago and had previously lived in Tralee. He first came to the attention of gardaí following a series of thefts and later spent three months in prison for stealing bottles of vodka, Jack Daniels and Jameson from a number of shops in Tralee. It is believed that he was in gardaí custody last Thursday and he may have voluntarily slept rough on Sunday night. It is also believed that Mr Tatarczuch did not seek support from homeless services. He had recently taken a house in an estate in Killarney.

SmallTalk

Adam Moynihan caught up with comedian and impressionist Mario Rosenstock ahead of his brand new show ‘In Your Face’, which is coming to Killarney’s INEC on May 4 Hi Mario. You’re hitting the road again. I am. It’s a brand new show. Starting in Cork on April 10 and going around Ireland. 21 nights. Where did the name ‘In Your Face’ come from? There are two meanings to it. One is that when I’m doing the show, I absolutely get in people’s faces. People get hauled on stage. Dragged up. The show is hugely interactive. The other thing is that it’s a one-man show. You see around 100 different people, played by one man. So it’s all in my face. It’s in your face, it’s in my face, it’s ‘In Your Face’. You’ve played Killarney a few times before. What do you think of the INEC as a venue? What are Kerry audiences like? The beautiful thing about Killarney is that it’s one of the biggest venues you play. It’s, like, a 2,000-seater. It’s more like an arena than a theatre so it generates massive noise. People really take their entertainment seriously down there as well. They doll themselves up to the nines. It’s a special night out for everybody. You’re aware of that when you go there so the energy is heightened. Will any Kerry characters be making an appearance? Yeah, for this show I’ve put together a couple of things that might be topical for Kerry. There’s a massive screen that I interact with so I can come on as someone like Miriam and talk to Leo Varadkar (also me) “live” on the big screen. Two of the characters I’ve worked on most are Danny Healy-Rae and Michael Healy-Rae, who both appear together on the big screen. What do you make of our gorgeous Kerry accent? Is it hard to master? Easy-peasy. The only problem is that you can kind of get into the Cork/South Limerick area. It’s so beautiful and distinctive and musical and lyrical, it’s easy to tap into. I’ve been doing Daithí ó Sé for years as well. Although my Daithí ó Sé doesn’t actually speak English - he kind of growls. I also do a good impression of Fungi the Dolphin. Do dolphins have Kerry accents? Fungi has been in Kerry a long time now so he must. Is doing impressions a skill that you’ve always had? Yeah. It wasn’t just the voices. I used to take off people. The way they looked and the way they acted, the way they walked, the way they sat, the way they expressed themselves… So first I did my father and my family. I wasn’t the class clown or anything but I found it a good anti-bullying tool. If you were being bullied by a fella in school and you did an impression of him in front of the whole class, and everyone laughed, basically it f***ing crushed him. I found out that it was a social tool. I read recently that Gift Grub has been going for 18 years, which I couldn’t believe… I know! It’s 19 years in May. I started it when I was 26 and now I’m 46. What do you think has been the secret to its success? The Irish sense of humour is taking the piss out of each other. The idea of taking people down a peg or two is very Irish. In other countries, they don’t get that so much. When you take the piss in America they think you’re being serious. It’s part of who we are really - to parody, to mimic… Another reason is the rich diversity of colourful politicians we have in this country. If you look at the politi-

cians in England, they’re all cardboard cut-outs (barring Boris Johnson). Enda Kenny, Bertie, Brian Cowen, Shane Ross… Jesus Christ, they’re like Punch cartoons the whole lot of them. So it’s really easy for me. And then if you go into other areas like rugby and soccer, you have wonderful characters there as well. Music… I mean, Michael Flatley. Could you get a more funny character than Michael Flatley? When I dress up as Miriam O’Callaghan, for some bizarre reason I look uncannily like Miriam O’Callaghan. Except I’m about ten pounds heavier. And a man. And a man! It’s largely about the characters in Ireland who keep pulling me along more than anything. Have you ever gotten into any trouble with your material? I heard Ronan Keating wasn’t a big fan… He wasn’t at the beginning. When he was around 22 or 23, I used to take the piss out of him every day. He used to walk straight into it. He used to say things like, “Fair play! Some day I want to be president of Ireland,” and you’d just go, “Okay, that’s tomorrow’s first sketch written.” Or he’d go, “Fair play! I want to make it in Hollywood.” So the next week I had a sketch of him ending up in a porn movie in Hollywood. I heard through the grapevine that Flatley has no time for it either. That one makes more sense to me. Yeah, exactly! I can imagine Flatley taking himself very seriously. It’s difficult to find out if politicians like it or not because they’re very cagey. They would always let on that they like it. Bertie Ahern used to say all the time that he used to listen to it but I always got the sense that he was lying. José Mourinho, on the other hand, loved your impression of him. He even invited you over to perform in front of the Chelsea players. That must have been surreal. It certainly was. Completely bizarre. 25 millionaires and me and the manager, and me pretending I’m him in front of all of them. I did a gig for half an hour and he literally said, “Shut up and go to bed” and he sent all the team to bed. Like children. At half nine. And then we stayed up and had a bottle of wine together. He used to listen to the CDs and he said, “Do your Mick McCarthy! Do your Mick McCarthy!” And I was like, (in Mick’s voice) “Alright José, I’ll do my Mick McCarthy for you,” and he’s there, “That is Mick McCarthy! That is Mick McCarthy!” Such a bizarre story. Imagine José Mourinho with his hands over his eyes going, “Do your Mick McCarthy!” You also do a good Donald Trump. It must be great for you when a character like him comes along? Do you know what, Adam? Donald Trump isn’t a great character for me to do because he falls into what I might call the ‘Conor McGregor’ category. They do themselves better than I’ll ever do them, and also they do more bizarre things than I could ever imagine. The best I can do is literally just copy them, and if I’m just copying them I don’t think I’m doing my job properly. They’re very hard to parody. I hardly ever do Conor McGregor in sketches because he’s frankly ridiculous. Also Trump’s craziness moves so fast that by the

Mario Rosenstock time you do a Trump sketch, he’s already done four more ridiculous things that make your sketch look outdated. You would nearly need to have a channel called “Live Piss-take Trump” which basically is you waiting for Trump to do stuff and then jumping on it straight away. One other thing is that the victim of the piss-take needs to have a sense of shame or embarrassment. That’s why politicians are great because no politician wants to be ridiculed… Except Donald Trump, who couldn’t give a flying f*** what you say about him. A few Smalltalk questions to finish up. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “Be nice on the way up because you never know who you might meet on the way down...” I’ll give you a more advanced one actually. Go on… It’s from a Japanese philosopher called Shunryu Suzuki. “When you do something, you should burn yourself up completely, like a good bonfire, leaving no trace of yourself.” Do you have any superstitions? I play a lot of tennis and I try not to walk on any of the lines between points. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? The Killarney Advertiser app. We don’t have an app yet but good answer. Okay, probably Today FM so. What would you sing at karaoke? Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen. Who would play you in a movie about your life? People are always coming up to me saying your man Hugh Dennis looks a bit like me. But I think a young Michael Douglas. Not an old Michael Douglas, but a young Michael Douglas. And last one… Can you tell me a joke? No. I don’t do jokes. Fair enough. Okay, knock knock. Who’s there? Howard. Howard who? Howard I know. Good one, Mario! See, I told you. Jokes are crap! •

TOWNTALK New Garda Initiative Introduced In Killarney Kerry Delegation Visits Tourism Ireland In NY

Representatives of Kerry County Council, who were in New York for the St Patrick’s Day period, met with senior executives from Tourism Ireland this week. They were briefed on Tourism Ireland’s extensive promotional programme in the United States for 2018, which is in full swing right now. The United States is the second-largest market for tourism to the island of Ireland. 2017 was the fifth record-breaking year in a row for Irish tourism from the US, when we welcomed a record 1.83 million American visitors. Tourism Ireland recently launched a new strategy to continue to grow tourism from the United States, setting out ambitious targets which will see the island of Ireland welcome 2 million American visitors per year by 2021, representing growth of +23%; and will see revenue generated by American holidaymakers increase by +33%, to €1.37 billion per year. Our important ‘culturally curious’ and ‘social energiser’ audiences are being targeted with distinctive vacation experiences, events and special offers tailored to their interests. Tourism Ireland is creating ‘stand out’ for the island of Ireland in the US, highlighting experiences like the Wild Atlantic Way, the Causeway Coastal Route and Ireland’s Ancient East. Promotions aim to grow travel to the regions of Ireland, during

the shoulder and off-peak seasons. “We were delighted to meet with the representatives of Kerry County Council and to have the opportunity to brief them about the extensive promotional programme we are undertaking in the United States this year,” said Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America. “St Patrick’s Day traditionally marks the real start of the tourism season for us; our aim is to bring a smile to the faces of people everywhere and to convey the message that Ireland offers the warmest of welcomes and great fun, as well as wonderful scenery and heritage. We are using every opportunity to capitalise on Ireland’s heightened profile around St Patrick’s Day; the saturation coverage about Ireland at this time of year – across the airwaves, in newspapers and digital media – is an invaluable boost for our overall tourism marketing drive in 2018.” Tourism Ireland participated in and promoted the island of Ireland at a range of St Patrick’s Day events across the United States. Numerous landmarks and iconic sites participated in Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative to celebrate St Patrick and Ireland – including the ‘Welcome’ sign in Las Vegas, City Hall in San Francisco, Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi and the world-famous Niagara Falls.

Gardaí in Killarney have announced details of a unique new initiative aimed at creating more awareness around crime and enhancing the personal safety of vulnerable people within the community. Killarney gardaí Michael Milner and Diane Collins will deliver the Streetwise Programme over an eight-week period in St John of Gods and Kerry Parents and Friends association. The programme was launched at the Kerry Parents and Friends Centre in Killarney last Friday. The Streetwise Programme provides vulnerable learners with a greater understanding of crime awareness, which in turn enhances the personal safety of individuals involved. The training will be lead by the two Killarney-based gar-

daí and will help break down barriers between gardaí and members of the community. A range of topics will be covered including the role of An Garda Síochána, increased vigilance in both the home and when out in the community and how to access emergency services. It will also teach the consequences of vandalism and social media abuse. It is hoped that the programme will foster a greater awareness around attitudes to alcohol and the legal consequences of substance abuse. At the end of the eight-week course, gardaí will detail the participants on the first-hand happenings and running of a garda station. All participants will receive a certificate on completion of the course.

Walk In Memory Of Vivien & Sheila The Killarney Branch of Kerry Hospice annual fundraising walk in memory of Vivien O’Shea and Sheila McGillycuddy takes place on Good Friday, March 30. Registration is at 10am at Garden Restaurant, Muckross House. The walk commences at 10.30am and there is a choice of two walks: • From Garden Restaurant via Dinis Cottage and section of Torc Trail and return to Garden Restaurant (8km approx). • From Garden Restaurant to Brickeen

Bridge and return (6km approx). There is no registration fee but there is a bucket collection on the day. Cardiac Response

And The Oskar Goes To… First Responders

Seeking New Recruits

Mish O’Donoghue, Niamh O’Dwyer, Derry Healy & Shane O’Callaghan from the Oskars organising committee.

Award season is coming closer and closer as Killarney gears up for its first ever Oskars, which take place next Thursday, March 29 in the INEC. Kilcummin and Glenflesk GAA clubs have teamed up to host the event and excitement has reached fever pitch.

Seven very famous films, which have been shortened down to 8-10 minutes each and are starring local people from both clubs (some of whom have never acted before), will be debuted on the night and it will be the first time anyone (including the cast) will see the final finished film. After the viewing, the much sought after Oskars will be handed out to the worthy winners after being decided upon by the A-list judging panel. In a twist, the Oskar for best overall film will be decided upon by the votes of the public who attend on the night! With this in mind we invited some of the stars, producers and organising committee into the Chatroom during the week to talk about the event. Derry Healy and Mish O’Donoghue were representing Glenflesk while Shane O’Callaghan and Niamh O’Dwyer flew the flag for Kilcummin. You can watch this Oskar-ific Chatroom tonight, Friday 23, at 9pm on our website www.killarneyadvertiser. ie and also on our Facebook page. Don’t forget to like and share if you like what you see. See you all on the red carpet for the Oskars everybody!

Since going live with the National Ambulance Service in August 2015, the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit has responded to over 460 calls. The voluntary group are deployed by the National Ambulance Service in certain medical cases, such as chest pain, stroke, choking and cardiac arrest. They are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The unit are always looking for new recruits. Prior medical experience is not required as training is provided to all new members. Thanks to generous sponsorship

from Henry Bartlett and Richard Wilkins of Independent Irish Health Foods Ltd, they were able to purchase six new defibrillators (bringing their total up to 12) while also upgrading their digital radio communications system to the most up-to-date equipment available. The group also receives generous support from Tricel and Killarney Plaza Hotel. If you’re interested in joining the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit, call 085 8255280 or email co-ordinator Leo O’Connor at killarneycardiacresponse@gmail.com.

Is It Time To Turn Our Backs On The Book? Words: Adam Moynihan

The alarming “breach of trust” (Mark Zuckerberg’s words) that has led to this Cambridge Analytica scandal has left many users wondering if they should delete Facebook altogether. To be honest, it might be no harm. 50 million people had their data unwittingly mined, analysed and used against them in a shocking betrayal of privacy that is straight out of a dystopian sci-fi novel. The scary thing is, it wasn’t just people who signed up for these 3rd party apps who fell victim to the scam, it was all of their Facebook friends as well, so it’s not like you can blame the victims for being careless. Cambridge Analytica took this data – likes, statuses, personal information – identified target voter groups and designed targeted messaging to influence opinion. The kind of opinion they were trying to illicit hasn’t necessarily been proven just yet but the fact that Donald

Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon oversaw the company’s activities and Robert Mercer, a major donor to the Trump campaign, invested $15 million, it’s not too difficult to connect the dots. Broadcaster Matt Cooper deleted his Facebook account live on air and, since the scandal broke, many fellow users have removed themselves (or at least talked about removing themselves) from the world’s biggest social media platform. Unfortunately, it’s easier said than done. Facebook has become a fairly sad place in my opinion. I remember joining in 2008 and being completely drawn in by its unique design and features. Once all of our group of friends had signed up, Bebo couldn’t compete. Back then Facebook was actually “social”. Almost all of your time on the site was spent chatting to friends, posting on their walls and, if you really liked someone, sending pokes. It was good craic. Now, trawling through your news feed is a very different experience. All you see

is viral videos, memes, click bait and “tag someone who…” posts. WhatsApp has completely taken over the messaging scene (although Facebook’s independent Messenger app isn’t bad either, in fairness) and writing on walls is a thing of the past, so really the social element to Facebook has virtually vanished. The one thing it can potentially still be useful for is news. At the Advertiser we find that Facebook is a good way of sharing our stories and interacting with readers. Unfortunately, Facebook’s algorithm pushes whatever it sees fit to the top of your news feed, with viral videos and memes apparently more important to them than actual news. It’s worth bookmarking your favourite pages (like the Killarney Advertiser) so you can access them directly. The problem with Facebook at the moment is that there’s a whole bunch of noise and not a lot of substance. So why not just delete it? FOMO (fear of missing out) is definitely a factor. What

if all the lads are having great banter on FB, and I’m here on my own twiddling my thumbs like a chump? It’s like being at the dullest party ever but being afraid to leave in case it suddenly turns into the best night of all time. Facebook is also addictive. We’re addicted to getting likes and we’re addicted to viral content. Research has shown that click bait works, even if the content that we click through to is rubbish. It’s the anticipation that gives us the buzz. In terms of this kind of rush, Facebook is a very potent dealer. People have been wary of how much Facebook knows about us for a long time. I think we have always known that in the wrong hands, our personal information could cause personal embarrassment, profit faceless corporations and even swing an election. But, for whatever reason, we’ve resisted deleting. Now we know for a fact what Zuckerberg and co. think of our privacy, is it finally time to turn our backs on the Book?

Anne Lucey’s Views On The News

Town Councils Could Be Restored

Almost 400 submissions have been received on a review of local electoral areas currently underway, and a good deal of them from Kerry in what will be the third review of local government since 2008. The radical reforms of 2014, introduced by Fine Gael Minister Phil Hogan, in the Local Government Reform Act 2014, the biggest in over 100 years, abolished 80 town councils and their powers and with them hundreds of council seats. Towns were subsumed into new, often huge, geographical areas called Municipal Districts and with them went the urbane tradition of 115 years of town halls, town clerks, town mayors and chairmen, and most importantly revenue-raising powers. Most of the rates struck and raised locally were spent within the town boundaries with towns fighting against the handover of too much of what they raise to the county council. But right from the start, the reforms attracted criticism. At a time of cuts in local authority funding, main towns had to share out their crews and finance among smaller towns and villages miles away. And not least in Killarney. There was a need to re-imagine town councils. They were too big. There were too many men. Killarney was a case in point. The last town council had all men. The new reforms won’t bring back the old structures. However, there is a move by Brendan Howlin in the Labour Party which might see to that. If it gets support. The terms of reference drawn up by Minister for Local Government and Reform John Paul Phelan are to reduce the size of territorially large local electoral areas, limiting councillor numbers to a maximum of seven. And, in an apparent reversal of the previous policy, there is a specific focus on local areas focusing around towns. But Labour’s Brendan Howlin says the review, which is to report back this May/June, and implemented in time for the 2019 local elections will not bring back town councils and will not repair the damage of 2014. And Mr Howlin says what the minister is creating are “notional” new areas for the town. Phil Hogan’s reforms damaged his own town, Wexford (where Mr Howlin was a former mayor) and left towns at the mercy of rural councillors. Allowing his cabinet colleague to abolish town councils was one of his great regrets as a Labour Minister in government. “It was one of our significant mistakes. Phil Hogan’s reforms dealt a significant blow against democracy,” he told me.

The Labour leader is introducing a new piece of legislation in a matter of weeks which, if supported, will see the full restoration of town councils as legal entities before the 2019 local elections. “The Restoration of Town Councils Bill” currently being finalised will seek to repeal sections of Phil Hogan’s 2014 Act so all the main powers of the old town councils would be restored. Towns are the primary economic drivers and the legislation will restore their rate collecting powers, Mr Howlin says. Town mayors would also be restored. In Wexford, the last three chairmen were from rural areas, he points out. A previous bill by Fianna Fáil to appoint a commission to pave the way towards working towards the restoration was passed narrowly last October. But it did not go far enough. Mr Howlin says and hopes Fianna Fáil will support his full restoration bill. He has already met with cross-party deputation of councillors on the issue and he would hope to get support, too, from Sinn Féin. Will he get support? If he does, it will help resurrect Labour. The abolition of the town councils diminished a means for people to go into politics. Finally, had there been more women on the town council in Killarney, or even in the county council, or even in the Dáil or Senate (all eight are men), I am certain we would have more pedestrian crossings into our National Park. We still haven’t a crossing from Beech to Mission Road in by the Monsignor O’Flaherty monument. We still have no pedestrian crossing at the new entrance. We still have no crossing on Beech Road to access the car parks from the supermarket. Women with trolleys, prams and out walking have long ago seen the need for these. At this stage, it seems we will have an outer ring road before we can achieve a few basic road crossings!

“It’s All Been So Fast, We Haven’t Had Time To Analyse” It must be a month since I wrote in this column how it was easier to give up the fags than Facebook! Well no smoke without fire. In recent days, the “social” media site is unravelling on the stock market and on mainstream media in a manner that is self-combusting. There are help sites on how to survive without Facebook and a new non-profit organisation called Signal is signalling its intention to start up a safe sharing site. I had become uneasy of late with FB. There was something insidious about it. It is nice to link up with people, and project yourself as how you would like to be seen. But it does not tolerate anything serious or in depth for too long without being unfriended, unfollowed or downright insulted. And there was all the spying stuff going on in the background. Nasty. I twigged we were being watched. That was kind of obvious. Some people even ended up in court after a late night rant and falling into the non-PC trap. There’s earnest policing of thought going on, while inviting us to express, express, and express. “What’s on your mind, Anne?” was the question when you opened the page. In retrospect, this is Satan’s approach to Eve in Paradise Lost. In other important respects too - getting us to admire ourselves and project the best image of ourselves - the method was straight out of the Book of Genesis. One wonders how many psychologists FB employed to come up with that age-old approach. This is a whole field which I think we may need to wake up to: people on FB are being bombarded with cleverly disguised commercial material for yoga classes, for “mindfulness” and “meditation” - what used to be called “New Age” stuff - to help us achieve our utmost. Calm us busy people down, of course. What else could it be? What we know of Zuckerberg would lead us to think he is a sucker for this stuff. Touchy-feely kinda guy. Cares about the planet and donations and inter-racial matters and climate change. Wow! Putting us all on the right path. But I wonder how much he was manipulating us and how much money he was making out of it. There is a broader question. Facebook is only one, er, “platform”. And while we worry about old politics like Putin v May, has the world moved to a new platform and is it being controlled by a few men who have their hands on the buttons of technology? It’s all been so fast, we haven’t had time to analyse. I have suspicions Amazon and other big guns like Google, maybe Apple too, are not too far from all of this. There was a conference by Google in Killarney not so long ago. Security – albeit by people wearing nice casual t-shirts - was so strict. I was taken aback. Stunned in fact. What had they to hide? Then there is the rampant sexism of Silicon Valley. Under the “FAAG” mindset (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Google), promoted by these “soft men” of the tech world, we are all supposed to be passive and supine like the Buddha. Sit under the tree! We are certainly not meant to question, argue or express anything outside the approved mindset. Otherwise we are “negative”. And we must be “positive”. Who is setting these standards? But there is one common denominator in all of these “positive” men: they are very good at making more money than they need.

The team responsible for restoring a Victorian Landau carriage from 1861 have been rewarded for all their of hard work with the Best Overall Entry prize in this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. The group, working out of the Men’s Shed on Lewis Road, spent over six months painstakingly renovating the badly damaged vehicle, which was used to transport the Grand Marshall in Saturday’s festival. Dermot Healy found the carriage on a scrap heap and tasked Mick Myers, Tom Ashe, Pat O’Brien and a Mexican woman named Marguerita Camphuis with restoring the coach to its former glory. The dedicated enthusiasts went about their

business and the end result, as you can see, were remarkable. The classy carriage truly was the talk of the parade and a deserving winner of the Seán O’Keeffe Perpetual Trophy. Killarney Athletic AFC picked up the Michael Courtney Trophy for Best Interpretation of Theme (Killarney You’re Looking Good) while Killarney Legion GAA Club, who have a proud competitive history in the parade, scooped both Best Sporting Entry and Best Activity Group honours. The Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club won Best Sports Club. Barraduff National School were named Best School.

Time To Shape Up This Easter

Easter might be just around the corner but that’s no excuse to put off your new healthy-eating regime, according to a Killarney healthy eating expert. Sorcha, who runs a Slimming World group in Killarney, says celebrating Easter and even enjoying the occasional chocolate fix doesn’t have to mean waving goodbye to achieving your weight-loss goals. “A lot of people might think that there’s little point in starting a new healthy eating regime right before Easter,” she said. “With that way of thinking, though, there will always be some reason or other to put it off! The beauty of Slimming World lies in the fact that it’s a lifestyle change rather than a diet, so there’s nothing to stop you losing weight at any time of the year.” Starting those weight-loss resolutions before Easter is certainly advisable given that ROI adults are eating up to three times more than the recommended intake of sugar. The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) concludes that sugar should account for no more than 5% of total energy intake, however on average people are getting 12-15% of their energy from sugar, increasing the risk of weight gain and other health problems. “The key to long term weight loss is balance, so allowing yourself a little tempting treat is really important because it keeps that balance in check,” Sorcha continued. “And, of course, filling up on lots of tasty, healthy

and filling food will make it easier to enjoy that treat – whatever it may be – without over-indulging. With Slimming World, no food is off limits, which means you can still celebrate Easter with hearty lamb roast dinners, delicious fish dishes and, of course, a little chocolate!”

Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan allows slimmers to satisfy their appetite on filling foods that are low in energy density like pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit and vegetables, lean meat, poultry, fish and more – meaning they need never go hungry and are free to enjoy a treat every now and then without feeling guilty. In fact, many members have already achieved a cracking weight loss, all while eating delicious meals of chips, bolognaise, curries and their favourite treats. Sorcha, who has lost four and a half stone herself so far, said: “I never thought I’d be able to lose all this weight while still enjoying my favourite foods every day. Before I joined Slimming World I thought I’d have to say goodbye to all of them! With a few simple swaps and a little bit of forward planning, though, it’s easy to enjoy loads of different meals and never feel like you’re missing out. “Even when family celebrations like Easter come around it’s no big deal because Slimming World fits in with the whole family and we can all eat the same foods.” • If you would like to join, groups are Tuesdays in The Brehon Hotel at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm or 7.30pm, or Thursdays in the Plaza Hotel at 9.30am or 11.30am. KWD & Victoria Recycle Right

A Killarney man has been sentenced to five and a half years in jail for brutally assaulting his partner at her apartment. Aidan Cahill (29) of 5 Grosvenor Court, High Street had previously pleaded guilty to the crime and, speaking at the sentencing, Judge Tom O’Donnell said there was “no excuse” for the level of violence meted out to the victim. Judge O’Donnell handed Cahill a seven and a half year sentence with the last two suspended for a further seven and a half. Cahill is prohibited from having any contact with his former partner during this time.

15-Year-Old Rams Garda Van At Ballycasheen A Killarney teenager, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after ramming a garda van with his parents’ car. The youth was spotted driving erratically around Killarney at around 5am the morning after St Patrick’s Day and when gardaí were informed of the direction he was heading, they attempted to intercept him at Ballycasheen junction. It’s understood that he then attempted to escape by driving into the garda van. Three gardaí were injured in the incident. The teenager, who was known to gardaí, was released later that day and will be dealt with under the Juvenile Diversion Scheme.

Over the last number of months, KWD Recycling representatives visited 107 schools across 3 counties (Kerry, West Cork and West Limerick) completing ‘Recycle Right’ workshops with almost 4,000 pupils. The reaction from the students and teachers has been very positive and KWD are confident that all involved now have the knowledge to dispose of their waste correctly. Most importantly, students now know what items can go into the recycling bin. All schools who completed the workshops were given the opportunity to enter a competition to build ‘Kenny the KWD Recycling Truck’. KWD Recycling have

thanked all of the students in each school for the effort they put into building the trucks. The entries were of a very high standard and it was a very difficult for the judges to pick a winner but prizes were awarded to the following students: • Victoria Karaivanova (Holy Cross Mercy Primary School, Killarney) • Cristina Lopez (Moyderwell National School, Tralee) • Jonathan Galvin (Knockaderry National School, Farranfore) • Ella Buckley (Dromore National School, Bantry) • Grace Higgins (The Model School, Dunmanway)

County’s Artists Working Out Of National Park

Three Artists in Residence at Kerry County Council have benefitted from the goodwill of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the support of Minister Josepha Madigan. An expanded partnership sees support for the residencies via the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Trustees of Muckross House in the generous granting of residential cottages from which the county’s resident artists are currently working. Writer in Residence Annemarie Ní Churráin is based in one of the cottages, as is Filmmaker in Residence Mieke Van-

mechelen and shortly they will be joined by Musician in Residence, Ian Wilson. A briefing session was held this week at the Schoolhouse in Muckross in which the Trustees of Muckross House were present alongside representatives from the National Parks & Wildlife Service. “The temporary use of the cottages allows the NPWS to be especially relevant to contemporary arts culture and we are delighted to be a part of the excellent work that is taking place across these art disciplines in Kerry,” said Pat Dawson, Regional Manager with the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Kind Emma Donates Hair To Charity

Emma Lynch, a Transition Year student at Killarney Community College, has donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust. The innovative charity, which has also received donations from a number of well-known celebrities, makes wigs for children who

have lost their hair due to cancer. Emma’s hairdresser, Kerry Fleming, cut off her 32 centimetre-long hair this week, raising over €1,000 in the process. Emma said she chose this worthy charity as cancer is an issue that’s close to her heart.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Russia/Nazi Comparison “Unacceptable” Russia’s ambassador to the UK has described Boris Johnson’s comparison of this summer’s World Cup to the Nazi Olympics as “unacceptable and totally irresponsible”. Johnson, who is the current UK foreign secretary, predicted on Thursday that Putin would revel in the World Cup to be hosted by Moscow in the same way that Adolf Hitler did in the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936. He also suggested that the UK might advise England football fans to avoid travelling to the tournament for their own safety. Alexander Yakovenko offered his own riposte. “Nobody has the right to insult the Russian people who defeated nazism and lost more than 25m people by

comparing our country to Nazi Germany,” he said. The ambassador downplayed the possibility of a boycott of this summer’s football tournament, saying that the “world community” had picked Russia as the host. He conceded the event would be “advertising” for Russia and said it would showcase the country’s improving living standards. The foreign secretary said on Thursday that about a quarter of the number of fans who travelled to watch England in Brazil in 2014 were currently expected to go to Russia. He said 24,000 people had purchased tickets, as opposed to 94,000 at the same point in the run-up to the tournament in Brazil.

Ross Denies Interfering With Grants Process Minister for Transport Shane Ross has insisted that he did not interfere in the process of a private school in his constituency receiving a €150,000 sports grant. Ross was widely criticised after announcing the funding for the resurfacing of the hockey pitch at Wesley College on Twitter. Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Seán O’Rourke, he said: “I never made a representation to any official”. Ross said the application by Wesley College was scored by department officials and that he signed off on the decision without observations or comment. “I had absolutely nothing to do with it whatsoever, bar signing off,” he said. He added that the application was initially refused and that he had also signed off on that. However, the school later appealed

Trump Corner Biden Would “Go Down Fast & Hard” US President Donald Trump has said that former Vice President Joe Biden would “go down fast and hard” if the pair had a fist fight. Trump was responding to comments made by Biden claiming that if they were in high school and he heard Trump making disrespectful remarks about women, he’d take Trump behind the gym and “beat the hell of him”. “A guy who ended up becoming our national leader said, ‘I can grab a woman anywhere and she likes it,’” Biden said. “They asked me if I’d like to debate this gentleman, and I said ‘no.’ I said, ‘If we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.’” “I’ve been in a lot of locker rooms my whole life,” Biden continued.

Never fails to entertain

“I’m a pretty damn good athlete. Any guy that talked that way was usually the fattest, ugliest S.O.B. in the room.” The former VP made similar comments about Trump during the 2016 election when he was campaigning for Hillary Clinton. Trump took to Twitter to address the issue. “Crazy Joe Biden is trying to act like a tough guy. Actually, he is weak, both mentally and physically, and yet he threatens me, for the second time, with physical assault. He doesn’t know me, but he would go down fast and hard, crying all the way. Don’t threaten people Joe!” Trump and Biden could potentially face off in the 2020 presidential election as Biden has left the door open to a possible run. A CNN poll conducted by SSRS in January found Biden leading Trump by a wide 57% to 40% split.

and was awarded the grant. Asked if the tweet was an error of judgement, he said: “Yeah, I think it probably was but I’ve sent some irresponsible tweets around from time to time. I was just very pleased and I’ve said it about other clubs as well but it was in my constituency so I was delighted.” Ross said he will be reviewing the process but added that the current system should not be discredited. “Don’t discredit the system. This system is including and weighted towards the disadvantaged, it’s getting people who would never play sports into the sports area,” he said. He added that the system needs to be “a little less rigid and a bit more communicative”, adding that a lot of applications are declared invalid and “it’s a bit brutal”.

Plonker Hands Over Del Boy Driving Licence A right “plonker” handed police a driving licence stating he was Del Boy Trotter from BBC comedy Only Fools and Horses. Police found the driver had no insurance after pulling the car over in Terrington, near King’s Lynn. The only licence the driver had was in the name of Del Trotter and stated the owner of the Renault Megane was only qualified to drive a three-wheeler. Officers reported the driver to

court and also seized the car after pulling it over on Wednesday. Norfolk and Suffolk police dog unit officers stopped the car on the A47 and tweeted about the incident, saying: “Not even this #Plonker’s fake driving licence could stop their car being seized.” Police said the licence had not been intended to fool them into believing the motorist was Mr Trotter and the incident “made [them] laugh”.

Gaa Club Could Lose Pitch For 6 Years Due To Metrolink

Na Fianna GAA Club are set to lose the use of their pitches for up to 6 years due to new plans for Dublin’s €3 billion Metrolink project. The club’s home on Mobhi Road in Glasnevin is set to be both the home to a new underground station on the route and a “tunnel boring depot” – used as a home for equipment. The emerging preferred route published today will see the high-frequency, electric rail service go from Malahide to Sandyford carrying 15,000 passengers an hour.

However, there will be impacts on areas near the build. In total, the National Transport Authority reckons that 100 properties will be affected, including 70 apartments near Tara Street in the city. The club says that the plan will mean it will lose the use of the main Mobhi Road pitch for a minimum of three years and potentially for six or more years, lose both all-weather pitches for the same time, and lose “significant” revenue from clubhouse activities.

Dec To Host Final The Chatroom – Tom & Lisa Episodes Without Ant See It Through Their Eyes

Declan Donnelly will present the final two episodes of Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway when the programme returns over the Easter weekend. The presenter and ITV both released statements confirming that the popular variety show will return on Saturday, March 31 for the penultimate episode of the series without Ant McPartlin, who is currently in rehab. The popular television host was involved in a three-car collision on Sunday night, which saw several people treated for minor injuries. It is believed that he was driving under the influence

of alcohol. The finale on April 7 is going ahead at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida as planned. “Whilst I never thought I’d be in this position, after much discussion and careful consideration we’ve decided that the remaining two shows of this series of Saturday Night Takeaway will go ahead,” Dec said. “We made a promise to take hundreds of deserving winners to Florida to watch the series finale, and we will honour that. Everyone at ITV and the Takeaway team feels we owe it to the audience to complete the series.”

Top Gear’s Track-Tor Sets New World Record Tractors. Fine when they’re on the farm, doing their tractoring thing with merry abandon. Not so fine when they join the public road network and hold up motorists. Matt LeBlanc therefore, had a rather exciting solution to the problem. Build something really, really fast. So fast, Top Gear’s very own ‘Track-tor’ – complete with a ‘Stig’ on board – has set a Guinness World Record title for the fastest tractor, thanks to a heady top speed of 87.2mph. It quite frankly obliterates the previous record of 80.87mph, set in Vuojarvi, Finland in February 2015, thanks to liberal use of a

5.7-litre Chevy V8 engine and its 500bhp, a can of Lamborghini orange paint, and many other things. But it’s probably the paint that did it. “As the proud owner of no less than four tractors,” said Matt, “you could say I’m a bit of an enthusiast. When you get stuck behind one, you can’t go anywhere. So we’re trying to speed up farming. When Lewis Hamilton retires, this is what he’ll be driving,” he added. You can watch the Track-tor in this week’s episode of all-new Top Gear TV on Sunday at 8pm on BBC Two HD and the BBC iPlayer.

The campaign, which kicks off Monday and runs for a week, will see 35 people involved with autistic children take over the My Boy Blue Snapchat account, including parents, teachers, special needs assistants and therapists.

Lisa and Tom tell us how they got involved in the campaign and how Tom ended up writing a song especially for it, which will be available from iTunes next Wednesday. Tom also gives us a live rendition of the song and believe us, it’s gorgeous! Cause Of Ballymun Fire Won’t Be Known For A Month

Dublin Fire Brigade says it is likely to take a month before the cause of the fire at an apartment block in Ballymun can be established. Dublin’s Chief Fire Officer Patrick Fleming said there is nothing to indicate the cause of the fire is suspicious and that it will be several months before the building can be returned to use. He said the blaze in a private residence above the Metro Hotel in Ballymun, which was reported just after 8pm on Wednesday, was one of the biggest fires in high-rise buildings in recent times. He said this was “not a Grenfell Tower type incident” because there was no issue with the external cladding and the fire spread internally. But it should be a reminder to apart-

ment-dwellers, especially those in high-rise buildings, of the importance of having a fire evacuation plan. Mr Fleming said the 13th floor, where the fire started, and the 10th floor, where it spread, are gutted. He said he is not sure how it spread but that falling debris may have been a factor. A number of other floors have suffered water and smoke damage. Mr Fleming said 60 fire officers, eight pumps and two aerial units attended the blaze and were supported by another unit from Dublin Airport. Gardaí will lead the investigation into the cause of the blaze, but Mr Fleming said that, given the level of damage to the building, it is likely to be a month before the cause can be established.

Review: George Ezra: Staying at Tamara’s George Ezra was just 19 when he released his debut single, “Budapest,” a warm, amiable, and soulful slice of classy folk-pop that invoked names like Ben Howard, Ray LaMontagne, and Tom Odell. A few weeks later, Ezra’s debut LP, Wanted on Voyage was released and entered the U.K. charts at number three. 4 years later he’s back with the new album Staying at Tamara’s which has already

spawned the hit singles Don’t Matter now and the infectious Paradise. Scandinavian sisters First Aid Kit lend their vocals and guitar playing abilities to the gorgeous Saviour while Ezra breaks things down to an acoustic guitar on one of the albums stand out tracks Hold My Girl. Staying at Tamara’s is out today on iTunes and can be streamed on Spotify and Apple Music.

Outdoor fun at Easter Camps

Research has found that everyone benefits from being outdoors – especially children! It’s not just the fresh air and exercise, but the experiencing, the discovery, the learning of new skills and the forming of new friendships. Killarney National Park Education Centre has been running Environmental Easter Camps for children for many years now and all the staff and volunteers who help run them are very experienced and are Garda vetted. Usually the ratio of children to adults is about 6:1, so there is plenty of supervision and lots of direction. The main aim for the children taking part in the camps is to have as much fun as possible while making new friends, exploring the National Park and learning about many of the plants and animals that occur there. The Easter Camps run from 9.30 in the morning until 3.00 in the afternoon, Tuesday to Friday and are based at Knockreer House. The children will play a whole host of ecologically themed games, do scavenger hunts, pond dipping, set traps, use microscopes and they might even bring home a few things that they have made, such as a nest box or bug hotel! If you can’t make it for the Easter Camps, there is still time to book onto our afterschool club – “The Explorers Club” which will be starting on Wednesday 11th April, at 4pm. And will run for six weeks. The camps and the Explorers Club are a very good way of getting children out-doors and helping them to appreciate and understand a little bit more about the wildlife and the habitats around us. They also help the children realise what impact their actions can on the environment, whether this is not dropping litter or helping to make space for nature!

Sweet Charity A Triumph The final curtain closed to a standing ovation on Killarney Musical Society’s 33rd production, Sweet Charity, which took place last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the INEC. The story followed the romantic trials and tribulations of Charity Hope Valentine, played by the absolutely amazing Killarney native Lily MacMonagle. Speaking to Killarney Advertiser, Killarney Musical Society PRO Irene Hurley said the Musical Society couldn’t be happier with the production. “From the dedicated cast, who put in long rehearsals since last November, to the back stage crew, front of house team and, of course, the committee who put in lots of work behind the scenes, costume, props and stage crew and all the volunteers that helped out the week of the show, everyone played a vital part in the suc-

cess of the show.” She went on to thank everyone who supported the society. “We would like to express our appreciation for everyone’s input, help and dedication. Thanks also to the many patrons and sponsors for their continued financial support. This support is vital to the success of the society and we are truly grateful. Our main sponsor again this year was Independent Irish Health Foods Ltd. Thank you for your support - it is very much appreciated.” Killarney Musical Society are already looking forward to another fantastic show for 2019 and we’re told that work will commence again in the autumn. From all your friends in Killarney Advertiser we want to congratulate Killarney Musical Society on the absolute triumph that was Sweet Charity. Roll on 2019!

Seán Keane To Play Muckross Traditional Farms Seán Keane, described as the distinctive voice of Ireland, will bring his music to Muckross Traditional Farms on April 1. Seán, who comes from a very musical family in Caherlistrane, Co. Galway, has been performing around the world for nearly 40 years. Born in 1961, he won his first of 13 Fleadh Ceoil medals for solo singing at 7 years of age. He joined his first band, Shegui, in London and released an album with them. He then toured America with his sister Dolores in a band called Reel Union. He was also a founding member of Arcady and released his first solo album in the early 90s. He’s still recording new material today. Seán will be joined by Fergus Feely on Mandocello and Pat Coyne on guitar. What kind of songs can you expect to hear on the night? Well, Seán released

his 10th solo album in November 2016 titled New Day Dawning and songs like One More Hour and Nature’s Little Symphony have become favourites from the record. Seán also continues to sing classics like Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears, From Galway to Gracelands and Fields of Gold in his set each night. His compilation three CD set entitled Never Alone still proves popular among his followers. Come along to hear his distinctive Irish tones pull at the heart strings and hear him play up to five instruments on stage. You can follow Seán on Facebook and YouTube. Visit www.seankeane. com for more information. The concert starts at 8pm (doors at 7.45pm) with tickets costing €25. For bookings, call 064 66 30804. Tickets can also be purchased from the Mucros Craft Shop in Muckross.

SMALL CLAIMS PROCEDURE IN THE DISTRICT COURT When you have a claim for goods or services purchased for private use as a consumer from someone selling in the course of their business or where you have a minor claim for damage to property and where the value of the claim does not exceed €2,000.00 such a claim can be brought through the small claims procedure of the office of the local District Court. There is a nominal fee of €25.00 for making such a claim and the claim is made by application and fee to the local District Court Office. However, it can also be completed online. As with all claims, you should act promptly in properly filing your claim with the court office. When the Claim Form is properly completed and the fee lodged with the Small Claims Registrar, the claim and supporting documentation will be furnished to the Third Party against whom the claim is made. The person making the claim is referred to as the Applicant and the person receiving the claim is known as the Respondent and once the claim is brought to the attention of the Respondent, the Respondent has a period of time to reply where they will either accept liability of the claim or dispute it and separately may then lodge a counter-claim where the Respondent, against whom the claim is

made, may make their own claim against the Applicant, being the person who has made the initial claim. Once the matter is ready to be heard before the Court, the parties attend the District Court for a hearing and it is important to bring all matters of documentary evidence to assist in the claim being validly made. Evidence will be heard before the District Court and it is a procedure which more often than not does not require a solicitor where lay litigants can present their own case. Very often costs are not awarded in such cases and this is particularly relevant where you are contemplating bringing witnesses to court. The Court will hear the claim and the evidence on both sides and give a determination. An Order of the District Court can then be enforced in the normal way.

The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Travel Lonely Planet’s Top Countries To Visit

1. Chile

Chile is a sinewy sliver of a nation, isolated from the rest of South America (and indeed the world) by the soaring Andes to the east, the vast Pacific Ocean to the west, the bone-dry Atacama Desert up north and the impenetrable wilds of Patagonia down south. From its disparate extremes to the ever-trendier capital of Santiago at its heart, the country’s citizens will unite in 2018 to mark 200 years of independence. Thanks to new non-stop flights from both London and Melbourne, it’s never been easier to catch a plane, raise a glass of pisco sour and toast the celebration.

2. South Korea

South Korea is a compact playground of Asian modernity. High-rises soar in the futuristic capital city, Seoul, which in 2017 received a huge facelift with the opening of its new Seoul-lo 7017, a high-line park with cafes, bars and libraries along a disused elevated highway. South Korea has embraced its hosting of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, and a new highspeed railway line will whisk travellers across the country to the Games. So don your hats and gloves to cheer on the best and brightest as they swoosh their way to glory. Or wait until it warms up and experience mountainous delights followed by steamy urban nightlife.

3. Portugal

Portugal has emerged from the long shadow cast by neighbouring Spain, seizing the spotlight as a dynamic centre for art, culture and cuisine. A spate of artfully designed museums have opened in the past two years, there’s now a celebrated microbrewery scene, and rock-star Portuguese chefs are creating culinary buzz from Lisbon to the glittering beaches of the Algarve (seven new restaurants

received Michelin stars in 2017). Heightening Portugal’s appeal are its incredible affordability and its natural wonders: in 2016, more than 300 beaches earned the coveted Blue Flag rating and two new biosphere reserves were named. It’s no surprise everyone is talking about this small, seafaring nation.

5. New Zealand

Twenty-five years ago, long before it was retrofitted to resemble Middle-earth, New Zealand began actively attracting adventure-seekers. A sweet suite of trails, the Great Walks, encouraged exploration of the country’s exquisite topography, taking tramping travellers through some of the world’s most extraordinary wilderness. Now, for the first time since the nine-track network was launched, a new Great Walk is under construction. The Paparoa Track and Pike29 Memorial Track, which commemorates the 29 miners killed in 2010, will form a magnificent multi-day trail through the South Island’s wild and wonderful west coast. Hikers can get a taster of the walk’s dramatic scenery on four existing trails.

4. Djibouti

Positioned for dramatic effect, the petite nation of Djibouti is in the process of being ripped in three by diverging tectonic plates. Magma seethes beneath ever-thinning crust; Martian-like deserts spew steam from fumaroles; and sunken lake shores glisten with huge salt crystals. In geological terms, this is a sprint finish. But in human terms, this is spectacularly slow motion – a reason to make travel plans, not cancel them! Add intoxicating culture, beckoning beaches and incredible whale shark diving, and you have even more reasons to hop on a plane, or ride the brand new train, to witness Mother Nature at her brutal best in 2018.

Over a two-decade career, Snow Patrol has carved out a unique place for themselves. Since their 1998 debut, Songs for Polarbears, which Pitchfork hailed as “an impressive piece of work,” their melancholy anthems of heartbreak and separation have mended hearts, and the band has racked up an impressive number of critical and commercial accolades, including 15 million global album sales, over 1 billion global track streams, five UK Platinum Albums, and are Grammy, BRIT Award and Mercury Music Prize nominated.

They emerged as heartsore musical prophets in the shadow of grunge and shallow pop, striking a chord in the minds, memories and hearts of listeners over six ground-breaking, confessional albums. Eyes Open, released in 2006, was the biggest-selling album in the UK that year; they went on to headline such festivals as the prestigious T in the Park. But after their Fallen Empires tour ended in 2012, band members — guitarist, vocalist Gary Lightbody, guitarists Johnny McDaid and Nathan Connolly, bassist Paul Wilson, and drummer Jonny Quinn — decided to stop for a while. “I do think the rest of the band would have been ready to record at any point over the last five years. But they never showed frustration or anger. Never did they say, ‘Hurry up and write the songs, mate,’” said Lightbody.

In the interim, Lightbody put the finishing touches on The Ghost of the Mountain, the second album by his Tired Pony side project with members of Belle and Sebastian, R.E.M, Reindeer Section and Fresh Young Fellows. He then moved to Los Angeles and began writing songs for movies (including “This Is How You Walk On” for 2017’s Gifted), and doing a number of high-profile co-writes with Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and One Direction. Songs that weren’t pulled from his own psyche were less painful to craft, and went a long way into healing what he considered to be writer’s block. Which is what he did for Snow Patrol’s seventh album. Titled Wildness, it taps into something raw and primitive. Tickets for all tour dates go on sale at 10am on Friday, March 30 via Ticketmaster outlets and www.inec.ie.

Plenty Of Options For Shady, Damp Areas

In the past few weeks I have been asked to recommend some plants for shady, damp areas. Salix chaenomoloides and Salix magnifica are two of my favourite willows for damp areas. The first has large pink catkins which glow in the sunshine. They are about two inches long, and very impressive! The second willow is a giant leaved variety. As a structural plant in the back of a border, it is a beauty. The leaves are about 20 cm long, leathery and in the spring have a purple tint. Next, I would advise members of the Cornus, or dogwood, family. Cornus kousa is a small tree, well able to cope with damp, though it does need a little shelter. The flowers, which are actually bracts, range from white to pink and, though they take a few years to flower, they are well worth the wait. Most people are familiar with the more common dogwood, which produces bright green, orange or red stems and are very decorative in the winter. More than that, though, they thrive in wet conditions. Then, the smallest of the cornus family is Cornus Canadensis. It is a groundcover, with white flowers in the summer and bright red berries in the autumn. The foliage turns a spectacular red in late autumn. Pachysandra is another excellent choice as groundcover, especially under trees. It has glossy green leaves all year round and small white flowers for months. Again, damp shady conditions are suitable. There are a selection of perennials which thrive in damp spots. Darmera is

a favourite of mine. In the early spring, pink flowers appear as if from nowhere on 60-90cm stems. The large, saucer-shaped leaves appear later, and are very useful in flower arrangements. Again, they become a dark red in the autumn. It spreads happily but is not invasive. It is a fabulous plant near a pond, as are varieties of the ligularia. Again, large – leaved, but in the case of the Ligularia they are a deep purple. Bright yellowy-orange flowers appear above them, and the contrast could not be better. Coming into season are the candelabra primulas. The clumps of leaves may reach about 30cm, but the flowers are much taller. Many colours are available, from delicate cream to hot pink. If you like your primulas big, try the Himalayan primrose, Primula florindae. It grows to a meter in height with the flowers even taller. They are happy with their feet permanently wet. Primula vialli is often forgotten about though it is a lovely plant. Growing to about 20cm, with the flowers reaching 50cm, it is a tidy plant with spectacular coneshaped flowers of purple tipped with red. Well worth getting! And last but not least, Rodgersia, or Bear’s Breeches, are a wonderful plant for wet shady areas. Originally green with white flowers, there are now varieties such as Chocolate wings and Bronze peacock which have purple/bronze leaves, and flowers which range from peach to cerise. The leaves are like strong horse chestnut leaves – very striking! I hope I have given you all some ideas!

This column is available to clubs and SUPPORT groups to promote upcoming fundraising events, agms etc. To guarantee publication an administration charge OF €10 will apply. Please contact 064 6632215 for more details. DEADLINE FOR EVENT INFO IS TUESDAY 5.30PM

F1 Season Opener This weekend sees the return of the 2018 Formula One championship. Ten teams and 20 drivers kick off the 21-round season in Albert Park, Melbourne on Sunday. Defending champions Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton are favourites this again year with Ferrari and RedBull hot on their heels. Winter testing didn’t present anything new at the sharp end, however mid-field is where that action will be this season. McLaren’s switch from Honda to Renault power with Torro Rosso taking on Honda over the winter is the big change. McLaren and Fernando Alonso have a lot to prove this year after three years of failure with Honda. On the other hand, Torro Rosso, who are the Red Bull ‘B’ team, will be a development bed for a 2019 Honda and Red Bull partnership. This will be interesting to see their progress. Williams will be the biggest loser this year. With two young, paid drivers, inexperience will affect results early in the season but they have the experience of Robert Kubica waiting in the wings.

The Renault factory team will have a development boost by having two strong engine customers in McLaren and RedBull. Alfa Romeo has returned to the grid as engine supplier to Sauber, albeit a rebadged Ferrari engine. Both Force India and Haas will offer the most consistency mid-field this season with no change to both package or driver line-up but they will struggle to see the podium this season. The turbo/hybrid era has been dominated by Mercedes but the power gaps across the grid are getting tighter, making for interesting racing. This season is shaping up to be a good battle for front-to-back.

Uber Suspends US Self-Driving Program After Fatal Crash Uber has announced it has paused its self-driving operations in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto after one of its autonomous vehicles killed a woman crossing a street in Arizona. According to Tempe police, the self-driving car that hit and killed the woman was in autonomous mode at the time of the accident.

It’s not the first time one of Uber’s vehicles has been involved in an accident, but it is the first time it has been involved in a fatality. Within the US there are growing calls for tighter regulations around the fully autonomous technology that is supposed to detect and distinguish between pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

Mercedes Begins Subscription Service In Germany Mercedes-Benz has introduced a ground-breaking vehicle subscription service that covers the cost of insurance, maintenance, repairs and even tyre wear for up to 36,000km a year. According to a spokesperson for Mercedes, the advantage of the Flexperience is the flexibility it offers. If you subscribe to a C-Class wagon but want an S-Class Cabriolet for your wedding day, you can use the app-based service to upgrade (at extra cost) to your perfect car.

Although it sounds perfect for enthusiasts with a short attention span or those who like to treat themselves to a more luxurious set of wheels every now and then, Mercedes has yet to officially announce pricing for the annual subscription service. One thing you can be sure of, it won’t be cheap. Addressing concerns that manufacturer-backed subscription services exclude dealerships, the new Flexperience scheme is managed by two of Germany’s biggest dealers.

Home Advantage Stripped From Lakers At Last Minute National League Cup Quarter Final Words & Pics: Eamonn Keogh Despite losing a closely contested game, Scotts Lakers’ League Cup quarter final clash with IT Carlow in Cork on Monday will be remembered for events that happened off the court in the lead up to this fixture. As Division 1B winners, the Lakers had earned the right of home advantage against Carlow (fourth place in Division 1A) and this was fixed for Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Sunday evening at 5.30pm. However, Carlow withdrew from fulfilling the fixture on Sunday morning claiming that adverse weather and snow conditions made it too difficult to travel. Basketball Ireland readily accepted their decision despite the fact that Dublin Lions travelled to Killorglin on the same day and the Carlow senior football team managed to make the journey to Belfast. Under Basketball Ireland rules, when a league fixture is to be rescheduled, the home team must offer their opponents three alternative dates. With Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre unavailable on Monday, the Lakers offered Carlow several other options to play the match in Killarney this week. All options were rejected. When Carlow refused to accept the offers, Basketball Ireland fixed the match for Neptune Stadium, Cork on Monday afternoon at 3pm. The governing body also stated that if Scotts Lakers refused to give up home advantage and play in Cork, the match would be awarded to Carlow. The Killarney side reluctantly agreed to play the match in Cork rather than give a walkover, having experience of the difficult appeals process in Basketball Ireland that rarely gives any satisfaction. Within a matter of hours, the Scotts Lakers had been stripped of home advantage and the opportunity of playing in front of an estimated crowd of 600 people in the final home game of the season. The new scenario was playing in front of less than 30 people in an empty Neptune Stadium in a

How a governing body that prides itself as a national sports organisation that claims to promote and develop basketball in Ireland facilitated this situation to develop is farcical, unjustifiable and reprehensible. The game itself started brightly for Scotts Lakers and they led 15-11 at an early stage and were 2720 in front at the end of the first quarter. The Killarney side stayed in front to lead 45-40 at half time but Carlow enjoyed a productive third quarter to take the advantage, 59-62, at the end of the third quarter. The Lakers trailed by 10 with 6:47 remaining but had a late rally to claw it back to 74-80 with 43 seconds left, before narrowing it to just a single basket, 82-84, with 13 seconds left. Carlow went six points clear again before a huge three-pointer from Antuan Bootle cut it to 85-88 with four seconds remaining. It was, however, too late and Carlow held on to win a match that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. In any sporting decider, a team can accept being beaten by the better team on the day and Carlow won the match to advance to the semi-final. Certain factors can go against teams and these are often accepted too as part of the game. Inconsistent and questionable refereeing decisions are under scrutiny in every sport. Referees have a thankless job and teams just accept the mistakes and hope that matters will even out over the course of a game or the season. Scotts Lakers didn’t enjoy too many of the officials’ calls on Monday and the stats tell their own story. Carlow had a total of six fouls called against them in the entire 40 minutes compared to 19 fouls called against Scotts Lakers. Unfortunately, this is part of the game and referees can often be inconsistent. Last week, some observers would suggest that Scotts Lakers ap-

peared to benefit from some questionable calls in the match against Kilkenny in the final quarter. The foul count that night was 27 against Kilkenny and 20 on Lakers. To win any match, a team has to beat the opposition and hope that the foul count is favourable and consistent. Scotts Lakers may have come up short here and would accept that on any day but having to deal with frustrating decision making by Basketball Ireland officialdom just makes the situation so disheartening and demoralizing. St Paul’s Basketball Club and Scotts Lakers will feel that their huge efforts to promote National League basketball deserve better. The biggest crowds all season at any National League venue have been at Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. Indeed, the crowds have been consistently bigger than any Super League team apart from Tralee Warriors. The Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre hosted a crowd of 950 people for a clash with Killorglin last October. This was a record crowd for a National League or Super League game in the history of Killarney basketball. If the home game had gone ahead last Sunday or any other day this week, Scotts Lakers may not have brought in 950 again but an estimated crowd of 600 plus would have turned up for the knockout last home game of the season. Instead of playing before a crowd of 30 people in Cork, Scotts Lakers had earned the right of a home game and the opportunity to receive the National League Shield in front of their own supporters. Nobody can control the weather but Basketball Ireland’s decision making leaves a lot to be desired on this occasion. Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney: Antuan Bootle 31, Dailian Mason 22, Dan Griffin 10, Mark Greene 8, Andrew Fitzgerald 6, Philip O’Connor 6, Dylan O’Sullivan 2. IT Carlow: Jimmy Gordon 32, Kevin Donohoe 19, Alan O’Neill 19

Fixture Debacle A Sad End To The Year Words: Adam Moynihan The Lakers were always going to be up against it in the League Cup. Realistically they needed to beat three teams from the top four in Division 1A to win this competition so the odds were against them from the start. The one factor in their favour was home advantage in the quarters, a right they earned by finishing top of Division 1B in their first season back in the National League. Basketball Ireland’s decision to snatch that away from them at the last minute was both cruel and very hard to justify. Whatever about the venue change affecting their chances in the competition, which it undoubtedly did, it also robbed St Paul’s of their final home game of the season. Financially speaking, they missed out on a nice chunk of money. The amount the Lakers make off the gate is the kind of cash that no team can scoff at, especially not one trying to find their feet in the league after a nine-year hiatus. But, to me at least, the real disappointment was

not being able to receive the Division 1B Shield on home court. That would have been a nice touch for the players and I’m sure younger fans especially would have enjoyed the occasion. It’s sort of unusual as well that the League Cup is played at the end of the year. From speaking to the players, it seems as though this is the least prestigious competition in the calendar. The emphasis appears to be on winning the President’s Cup, which was finished by January, and the league, which concluded two weeks ago with the Lakers winning 1B and Killorglin winning 1A. To put it in GAA terms, it’s a bit like playing the league after the championship. I think the fact that Basketball Ireland decided at 9.30am on Monday morning to move the Lakers v Carlow game to Neptune indicates the league’s own attitude towards the competition. It seems, from the outside anyway, that they just want to run the thing off as quickly as possible. I don’t imagine they’d do the same thing for a league decider.

It’s a sad enough end to the season for the Lakers but it shouldn’t detract from what they’ve achieved over the course of the campaign. They’ve given themselves a good platform to build on and it will be very interesting to see how far they can go over the next few years. The sky is the limit.

Celts Demolish Title Rivals Dingle

Premier Ac 7-1 Dingle Killarney Celti Bay Rovers (Celtic Park)

Words: Adam Moynihan

Fixtures:

Sunday, March 25 Premier A Fenit v Killarney Celtic (11.30am) Listowel v Mastergeeha (4pm) Division 1B Killarney Athletic B v Park (11.30am)

Monday, March 26 Premier A Dingle v Castleisland (7.30pm)

Killarney Celtic sent out a clear signal to their fellow title contenders last weekend as they put seven past Dingle Bay Rovers at Celtic Park. Goals from Gary Keane, Matt Keane, Wayne Sparling, Lee Downing, Danny Roche, Peter McCarthy and Conor McCarthy propelled Eoghan Donnellan’s side to a comprehensive victory and they have now overtaken Athletic at the summit of the Premier A. Realistically there will be no catching them on this form and it looks like the rest of us will have to battle it out for second place. It will be a really tough loss for Dingle to take. I wasn’t able to go to the game because we were training but Celtic clearly dominated from start to finish. I think Dingle were missing a few players but, even so, 7-1 is a crazy scoreline any day of the week. Incredibly, Celtic have beaten Dingle 14-1 on aggregate this season. From Athletic’s perspective, it was actually a good result as we were unlikely to catch Celtic anyway. We’d rather finish first naturally enough but the priority now is to make the league final. It’s frustrating at the moment because we’re not playing any games. This will be our fourth weekend in a row with no fixture. It’s a Catch-22 really… On one hand, we’re better off letting everyone else catch up in terms

of games played but on the other, not playing at this time of the season is a killer. It’s very hard to keep everyone interested. We had two decent wins at the end of February but now that momentum is completely gone. Especially with the football starting up again now, fellas have other commitments and it’s hard to juggle everything. But look, it was the same story last year and it turned out alright. It’s a long season. I suppose it’s just a case of sticking at it. Celtic are away to Fenit on Sunday and although Samphire Park can be a very hard place to get a result, you’d probably expect Celtic to win that one. Dingle are playing Castleisland in Tralee on Monday night and that one’s a lot harder to predict. Dingle are very good when they have everyone but Castleisland are dogged as well. A draw would be good for us. At the other end of the table, Mastergeeha have a big tie away to Listowel. They’re currently level with Dynamos on 10 points and this is one of their two games in hand. Dynamos’ remaining fixtures are tough enough looking (Castleisland at home and Athletic, Dingle and Celtic away) but Geeha need to pick up points somewhere themselves to create some separation. Even a draw here or there could be enough to keep them in the division.

Legion Honour Stars At Awards Night Killarney Legion GAA met at the Plaza Hotel recently to honour the club’s top performers and talented midfielder Shaun Keane was named Senior Player of the Year for 2017. Keane had an impressive season in Legion’s engine room as the team bounced back up to Division 1 at the first time of asking. Industrious forward Aidan Slattery picked up the Junior Player of the Year award while Sem captain and Kerry minor Cian Gammell won Young Player of the Year. The hard-working Seánie Culloty was very deservedly named Club Person of the Year. The club was also delighted to have lifelong member Joanne O’Riordan (pictured) at the event.

County League:

Dr Crokes host Beaufort Round 2 of the County League takes place this weekend and Dr Crokes will be hoping to pick up their first win of the campaign when they welcome newly-promoted Beaufort to Lewis Road. The defending champions were held to a draw by Glenbeigh-Glencar in their season opener two weeks ago as the sides played out a nine-all tie. You would have to go back a long way to find the last time Crokes went two league games in a row without winning but Beaufort will have nothing to lose in this one, especially following their seven-point opening day victory over John Mitchels. Elsewhere, Legion will be gunning for back-to-back wins when they face Templenoe in Derreen. The visitors will be desperate to pick up some points here following their 2-11 to 1-16 loss against Kerins O’Rahilly’s a fortnight ago

but confidence should be high within the Legion camp. James O’Sullivan’s team have some tough-looking away fixtures this year (St Mary’s, An Ghaeltacht, John Mitchels, Rathmore and Glenbeigh-Glencar) so home games will key. Having said that, they beat Dingle in Páirc an Ághasaigh and they don’t get much harder than that. Speaking of tough away fixtures, Spa make the long trip back to Gallarus to face An Ghaeltacht. Spa racked up a mad score against Rathmore last time out and their dynamic forward line will be hoping to repeat the trick, although I’m sure a win of any description would do just fine. Rathmore, who narrowly missed out on a final spot in 2017, will be aiming to avoid consecutive defeats when they play Glenbeigh-Glencar in Rathbeg at 3pm.

Fixtures: Sunday, March 25 at 2pm unless otherwise stated Division 1 An Ghaeltacht v Spa Dr Crokes v Beaufort John Mitchels v Dingle Killarney Legion v Templenoe Kerins O’Rahilly’s v St Mary’s (3pm) Rathmore v Glenbeigh-Glencar (3pm) Division 2 Ardfert v Na Gaeil Austin Stacks v Kenmare Shamrocks

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

Historic. Unbelievable. Spectacular. Only a few of the many superlatives that have been used to describe Ireland’s win over England last Saturday. Joe Schmidt’s men travelled to Twickenham for the St Patrick’s Day showdown with the NatWest 6 Nations Championship already won and in the hunt for the elusive Grand Slam. Ireland have only ever won the Grand Slam twice (in 1948 and more recently in 2009). England were

Fairytale Stuff From Grand Slam Champs

looking for revenge for last year when Ireland thwarted their back to back Grand Slams. Having lost two matches in a row, they should have been a tough side to face at home. However, as the up to now unmentionable Grand Slam was a possibility, the pressure was on Rory Best’s men to continue their fine vein of form. And this they did in style. We were treated to an excellent, high-tempo match from the off. The luck of the Irish certainly helped

them at times as the bounce of the ball went our way on more than one occasion. The first ended with Gary Ringrose touching down for a fortuitous try following a lengthy TMO discussion with Sexton converting. Aki was unlucky to knock on the ball after 18 phases a little later but the intention was clear, we were there to win, not to take part. Stander crossed for a very well worked try in the 23rd minute before England’s Elliot Daly scored his side’s opener.

Then, just before half-time, who should score but Jacob Stockdale and creating history scoring a record seven tries in the 6 Nations and 11 tries since he first played for Ireland last Summer. In the second half England went on to score two tries in the second half but the fact that none of their tries were converted showed it was not England’s day. A well-deserved Grand Slam on the biggest Irish day of the year. Fairytale stuff!

Sport 32 Clubs In Killarney Advertiser This Week On The Ball Dr Crokes Club EAST KERRY LEAGUE - ROUND 3: Dr Crokes 2-18 Kilcummin 0-9. We remained unbeaten in the Senior League as a result of our good win over Kilcummin on Sunday last. On a bitterly cold day our visitors started better and led 0-4 to 0-3 after ten minutes. By the end of the first quarter we had gone into a three-point lead. We got well on top in the second quarter and went in at half time leading 1-9 to 0-5. The highlight of the half was a great goal in the 20th minute by Colm Cooper. Kilcummin had a point at the start of the second half but four points without reply by us had us leading by ten points at the end of the third quarter. The visitors came into the game in the last quarter but we were always able to answer the scores they were getting with scores of our own. Our top scores of the day were Colm Cooper 2-4 (0-2 frees), Kieran O’Leary and Jack Griffin 0-3 each. DR CROKES FAMILY WALKING GROUP: Thank you to everyone who participated in our weekly walks and we look forward to starting up again later in the year. Fossa GAA

EAST KERRY LEAGUE: Fossa played Glenflesk in very cold conditions on Sunday in the East Kerry league. In spite of the weather this was a very good sporting game of quality football. Glenflesk opened the scoring with a Jeff O’Donoghue point, Paudie Clifford hit back with two points for Fossa. The teams were evenly matched and traded the lead on several occasions in this half, Mike Keeffe, Donald O’Sullivan and a fantastic left footed effort from Matt Rennie kept the scoreboard ticking over. Derry O’Sullivan made a vital goal line block to prevent a certain goal late in the half, however Glenflesk were ahead at the break, 0-08 to 0-07. The second half started slowly with both sides working hard but found scores hard to come by, Fossa equalised through points from Tadgh O’Shea and Donald O’Sullivan. In the 15th minute

Fintan Coffey struck for a goal after he flicked the ball to the net after a high ball was floated into the Glenflesk square. Glenflesk fought back and scores from Lee O’Donoghue (2 frees) and two scores from play by Dara Roche gave them the lead with 4 minutes remaining. Fossa weren’t finished and a fantastic individual goal from Paudie Clifford followed by a free from Tadgh O’Shea gave Fossa a deserved win on a score of 2-10 to 0-14. This was a very good win for Fossa who were asked questions and answered them well, it was a win dug out with grit, determination, teamwork, character and some fine displays all around the pitch and gives them confidence heading to Castlegregory next Sunday for Round Two of the County League.

GLENFLESK SENIORS: (SPONSERED BY O BRIENS TOPOIL AND THE KERRYWAY). Our Senior team suffered their second loss of the season on Sunday last to Fossa in the East Kerry League and now look likely to miss out on a League final appearance. In a close fought encounter a late goal from Fossa tipped the tie in their favour. FT Glenflesk 0-14 Fossa 2-10. We switch our attentions back to the Co. League next Sunday March 25th at 5pm in Barraduff Community field. After an opening round loss and a run of tough games coming up this game is of vital importance. All support welcomed. GLENFLESK MINORS: (SPONSERED BY O BRIENS TOPOIL AND THE KERRYWAY). Our Minors earned a hardfought point in Cromane on the Bank holiday Monday. FT Glenflesk 0-08 Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane 0-08. Killarney Legion

LÁ FÉILE PHÁDRAIG IONTACH: Many thanks to all those who helped, attended and supported our St.Patrick’s Day parade entry. A great family day out the club has had a fine record in recent years and thanks mainly to the efforts of Stella Moloney and Tommy Galvin and their dedicated crew they weren’t found wanting once again. SENIOR LADIES: The senior ladies turned in what can only be described as a Lazarus type performance when they trailed Laune Rangers by 10 pts. at halftime but were denied by a last kick of the game point by the Rangers to share the points. A serious second half display saw them whittle the big gap gradually to lead by the minimum and while the win would have been very welcome after such an effort one couldn’t begrudge the Laune Rangers a share of the spoils. EAST KERRY LEAGUE: Killarney Legion 1-19 Rathmore 5-9. When you register 1-19 one would expect to win most games but when this is balanced with the concession of 5 goals then victory becomes more problematic. So it proved as these two sides played out a highly entertaining high scoring game in difficult conditions. The pattern was set in the first half with the Legion hitting 11pts.but Rathmore netting twice to leave the halftime score 2-5 to 11pts.The second half again showed the homeside keeping the scoreboard ticking over but Rathmore punishing defensive slip ups with a further 3 goals. Conor Keane who was lively throughout got the Legion’s goal from the penalty spot but Rathmore were to run out winners by a point leaving both sides taking both positives and negatives from their respective performances. FIXTURES: Minors Killarney Legion V Dr.Crokes, Friday 23rd.March in Derreen at 5.30 p.m. Seniors, Co.League Div1.Killarney Legion V Templenoe, Sunday 25th. March Derreen at 2 p.m.
