Small traders loophole concern | By Sean Moriarty Niall O’Callaghan has hit out at multi-national retailers who are continuing to trade under loopholes while small family stores have no choice but to close. SADNESS: Derek Twomey (centre) was a respected member of Killarney Legion. Photo: Maria O'Sullivan/Killarney Legion
Shock at sudden passing of much loved Derek Twomey Killarney is in shock this week following the sudden passing of Derek Twomey on Wednesday afternoon. | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
The 31-year-old had taken ill at the Dungeon Bookshop on College St where he worked, and despite the attendance of emergency services, he died at the scene. Derek was very popular in sporting circles in the town. He was a member of both the Legion GAA and Killarney Celtic Football clubs and represented both
clubs at senior level. “Killarney Celtic was shocked and saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Derek. Derek played both underage and senior with Killarney Celtic and was an active member of our near neighbours Killarney Legion. He was a much valued member of the team at The Dungeon Book Shop in Killarney where he will be sadly missed by all his co-workers and colleagues. The club wishes to extend its condolences at this very difficult time to all of Derek’s family, relatives and friends. Derek will be fondly remembered by all those at Killarney Celtic who encountered his gentle and friendly nature,” a club statement said. Enda Walshe was the Legion Football Club's vice-chair and chair between
2012 and 2018 and is also one of the current selectors with the club’s senior team. “I knew Derek all his adult playing life. It was a huge shock to hear the news,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was great fun to be around and great for the banter. He was also a great footballer and had a brilliant right leg.” Derek also gave a spell in London where he played with the Kingdom Kerry Gaels GAA Club. The Woodlawn man is survived by his parents Gerard and Mary and his older siblings Darren and Deirdre. The Dungeon Bookshop was closed all day yesterday (Thursday) and for much of today (Friday) as a mark of respect for their colleague.
Since Level 5 restrictions came into force on Wednesday night only shops that sell essential goods are allowed to trade. All other stores, like shoe shops and clothing retailers are not allowed to open. Many family run businesses in Killarney are closed since Wednesday evening while some of the bigger multi-national stores continue to trade. One national clothes chain in Killarney is allowed to remain open as it sells facemasks alongside its several other clothing and footwear lines. A multi-national toy store in Tralee has been able to remain open as its believed to now stock toilet paper alongside its range of dinky cars and dolls’ houses. Cllr Callaghan, whose family run the now temporarily closed Fáilte Hotel on College St, believes this is grossly unfair to the smaller operators who are facing a difficult future as a result of the latest lockdown. “Are we all in this together? It doesn’t look like it,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “If that was the case I could open The Fáilte, [and charge] a pint and a mask for €6.”
Contract tracing not working in Killarney | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney man who was a close contact with a positive COVID-19 case said he was never contacted by the HSE’s contact service despite the people involved giving details of all their close contacts to the service. One member of a local family tested
positive about two weeks ago despite not showing any symptoms. That person passed it on, unknowingly, to six members of the family during a limited extended family get together. Once the family member realised he tested positive they informed both the HSE contact tracing service and everyone who attended the small family gathering. The local man, who does not want to be
named for obvious reasons, has since tested negative but that was after he arranged his own test through his family doctor. Despite the incident occurring over one week ago he has yet to get a call from the HSE advising him that he needs a test because he was a in close contact with a positive case. “I spent a very nervous few days waiting
for a result and thankfully I did not get the virus,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Only for contacting my own doctor, who was able arrange a test for me, I would be still waiting and worried. It proves that the contact tracing is not working. The people involved did the right thing, they contacted the HSE and everyone that was there – but HSE is not contacting the people who were there.”

Main St to close to traffic until late December | By Sean Moriarty Main St will close to traffic from next Tuesday until the end of December for re-paving works.
EXCITED: Actor Jessie Buckley was giddy with excitement to win two IFTAs on Sunday night.
Two IFTAs for Jessie Buckley
Kerry actors proved they've got talent as they took home some prestigious Irish awards on Sunday night. | By Michelle Crean It was yet again another triumph for Killarney's best loved actress Jessie Buckley who secured two Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs) on RTÉ hosted by comedian Deirdre O'Kane. The event, which was presented virtually this year due to the ongoing pandemic, showed an emotional Jessie accept her awards; 'Winner of Best Actress' for her role in 'Wild Rose', and 'Best Supporting Actress Drama' for Chernobyl. Tralee native and Love/Hate star, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, won the 'Best Actor' award for his role in the movie 'Rialto'. On screen Jessie appeared emotional saying "This is a complete honour, I feel completely shellshocked". The Muckross native, who is currently living in the UK, is daughter of Tim and Marina Buckley and cut her teeth in music and drama with Killarney Musical Society. She began her career in 2008 as a contestant on the BBC TV talent show 'I'd Do Anything' and has gone on to star in many more top films and stage performances since.
Her latest roles include 'The Lost Daughter' which she has just finished filming in Greece with Paul Mescal, star of hit Irish drama 'Normal People'. She was due to appear on stage at the English National Theatre in 'Romeo and Juliet' but that has been halted due to COVID. Fans can also catch her in Season 4 of 'Fargo' which will be coming out on Netflix shortly, and she is also currently on Netflix in 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things'. And unfortunately her film 'Misbehaviour' where Jessie stars alongside Kiera Knightley had just been released in cinemas as the country went into lockdown. "All her roles are so diverse," her proud father Tim told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "She even has the ability to suspend the belief that she is my daughter when I'm watching her on screen. She has the properties to get inside your head." He said that he is delighted she is getting the recognition she deserves. "It's nice to see. She's been very lucky, but she has made deliberate choices she's quite picky with her roles."
The works, which are part of the agreed Killarney Municipal District Works Programme for 2020, will take place in phases over several weeks with every effort being made to limit disruption for local businesses, shoppers and pedestrians. An investment of €100,000 is required for the replacement of the granite paving blocks on the carriageway along the street. The works, which will be substantially completed by the end of next month will require an additional bedding in period and it is expected the street will not re-open fully until the end of December. However, the street will remain fully open for pedestrians and localised deliveries will be facilitated. “Local businesses were briefed on the project which, on completion, will require approximately one month to allow the new surface to bed in. It is envisaged that the street will reopen
to vehicular traffic at the end of December,” said a Council statement. Cllr Brendan Cronin, the Mayor of Killarney, called for these works to be done at a Council meeting earlier this year and welcomed the news. He asked the people of Killarney to be patient while the works are going on. “There is no good time to do works like this, but with the lockdown in place this is the best of any time to do this. Anyone involved in construction will tell you that concrete does need time to settle,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. The original granite brick surface on the street is over a decade old and the commitment to repair the road surface was contained in the recently adopted Works Programme for 2020. Small sections of the carriageway (roadway) will be completed during each phase of the work and access to all local business will remain fully open to pedestrians at all times. Traffic diversions will be in place via The Ha-Ha, East Avenue Road and Mission Road.

Traditions live on through younger generations There may be a Level 5 clampdown in place but once again the children of Third Class in Scoil Bhride, Loreto in Muckross have no restrictions when it comes to their caring nature and thoughtfulness for others - especially those with special needs.
EXCLUSIVE
Traditionally, each year the children donate a portion of their communion money to the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, who carry children and young adults with special needs to Lourdes each Easter. Mrs Joan Moore has called to the school in recent years to accept the children’s
donations. Her late husband, Tim Moore’s annual memorial table quiz, also raises funds for this worthy charity each year. "Unfortunately this year, due to COVID restrictions, Joan is unable to visit the school but her granddaughter Lynn Moore, one of this year’s communicants will accept the substantial cheque of €400 on her grandmother’s behalf," teacher Padraig O'Sullivan said. "Her grandfather Tim is certainly smiling proudly down from the clouds above on Lynn and her classmates' continued generosity and upkeep of traditions and links with the exceptional charity."

The long-serving councillor, who is also steeped in Killarney fire brigade history, met baby Thomas O’Grady Mangan at his Ardshanavooley home earlier this week. Baby Thomas is the first-born child to Donal’s grandson Denis Mangan and his partner Johanna Fleming, who is the daughter of former town councillor Tom Fleming.
Denis is the son of Donal’s daughter Joan and her husband Paudie Mangan, Killarney’s Chief Fire Officer and he is their first grandchild too. When asked if Donal would prepare Thomas for a career in politics or the fire services he said: “All the frameworks are there but he can be anything he wants to be – he can be president if he wants and we will encourage Thomas to believe that he can be anything he wants to be.”
KINDNESS: Pupils from Scoil Bhríde Loreto donated some of their First Holy Communion money to the Irish Pilgrimage Trust.
Killarney man part of new Irish band A Killarney man is part of a brand new Irish band set to release not one - but two - singles today (Friday). Ciaran Quigley from Muckross has teamed up with Kyle Duffy from Co. Wicklow, and Rob Keating from Cork to form band Chapter 3 And today they'll release singles '5'10' and 'Better Than Me' from their debut, self titled EP which will go on release on October 30.
The group, who play modern music, have had a difficult year with the lockdown restrictions hampering recording but hope to end 2020 on a high note, Ciaran explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "As Chapter 3 we write and compose our own music which is mainly influenced by pop with hints of pop rock and indie," he said. "We were booked to record in March 2020, release our music in April, and had gigs and other events lined up to play throughout the summer, but unfortu-
nately COVID-19 had other plans for us and the rest of the world. Once the disappointment wore off, and restrictions permitted us, we re-grouped and went back to recording adding more energy and a new ideas into our songs. In what has been a tough time for the arts Chapter 3 are now ready to share some great music with everyone and hope to end 2020 on a high note." Golden couple celebrate 50 years of married life Yesterday (Thursday) was a significant day in the lives of local couple Sean and Kitty O'Grady - as they celebrated a "golden day" - 50 years of married life. | By Michelle Crean However, the Ardshanavooley couple kept it low key due to the current Level 5 restrictions which meant they couldn't gather with family and friends to mark the occasion in style. At home they shared their time together - saying that once restrictions are lift-
ed they hope to have a bigger celebration - even if it means waiting until they are 51 years married next year! Sean met Kitty in High Street when she was working in The Aeroplane Bar where he'd occasionally sing. She then went on to work in Kelleher's Pharmacy on the same street and as romance blossomed the couple married on Octo-

PARTNERSHIP
"It's a partnership," Sean told the Killarney Advertiser. "I think behind every marriage is two lev-

Over the years the couple went on to have five children Sean, Cathal, Vanessa, RuairĂ and CiarĂĄn, and eventually seven grandchildren who are aged seven to 18; Ryan, Caelyn, Ellen, Lucy, Emily, James and Freya. "We first settled in Fairhill and bought a plot from the Council and built the house in Ardshan and we're there since." A couple can't go 50 years together without some arguments and he said that there were some tough times but a good relationship saw them through it. "I think most married couples have ups and downs. There was stumbling blocks - everyone has them - you have a resilience and we're still hanging on!"

Community is at the heart of new zero waste business | By Michelle Crean A brand new business is the first of its kind in Killarney town centre and ticks all the boxes when it comes to living a sustainable life. Going Green KASI and Zero Waste/ Refill Store, which has just opened its doors on Beech Road, is going against the grain by not only creating 10 jobs as the country once again enters lockdown - but is a combined cafe using organically grown and locally sourced goods from Killarney and surrounds. And it also provides eco friendly products such as washing up liquid and detergent which customers can come in and fill up their containers themselves, reducing packaging waste. The former O'Brien's Sandwich Shop had just opened to the public when Level 5 restrictions came into force so for now they plan to operate as a take
away service. "This project ticks all the boxes from a social, environmental and economic impact," Marilyn Catapat-Counihan from Killarney Immigrant Support Centre (KASI), who is one of many who shear-headed the unique project, told the Killarney Advertiser. "Community is at the heart of this project. It's a good team effort." Customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable containers or jars and can stock up on spices, cereals, flour, pasta, herbs, etc., which helps save on packaging and waste - so they only pay for the produce not the packaging. "The environmental side of the refill store is about raising awareness about how we could all be part of saving our planet." All takeaway dishes and cups are compostable or recyclable, she added. And most of the produce is from KASI's organic garden in Ballcasheen. The staff

Photo: Michelle Crean were involved in a social enterprise with St Oliver's NS but restrictions paused that project for now. "The staff are already trained. And we aim also to support local producers with bread from Cormac Finn, Cheese from Wilma's in Killorglin, we get chicken from Michael Gleeson from Ballyhar, Mary Carroll from Faha supplies the pastry, and we have free range eggs, and milk from Bal-
lymac. If we cannot get it locally we get it made in Ireland to reduce food miles. We're subtly raising awareness about making a difference for a greener environment." During this period of lockdown the cafe will operate as a takeaway only as per Government guidelines, and will be open from 8.30am-4.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

Level 5 came too late in year for retailers | By Sean Moriarty
A Killarney jeweller has criticised the Government for not entering Level 5 restrictions two weeks ago as previously advised by NPHET.
Sarah Dineen, who runs Caragh Jewellers on Plunkett St, closed the doors on Wednesday although she is maintaining an online presence, and will reopen on December 1 at the earliest. She said business completely tailed off once the country went into Level 3 re-
– f or food shopping – t o take school aged children to permitted training as provided for in the Exercise and Sporting section on gov.ie – f or vital family reasons, such as providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people, and in particular for those who live alone but excluding social family visits – f or farming purposes, that is food production or care of animals – t o attend a wedding or funeral – t o visit a grave •T ransport – F ace coverings must be worn – W alk or cycle where possible – P ublic transport will operate at 25% capacity for the purposes of allowing those providing essential services to get to work – S chool transport is unaffected •V isiting nursing and care homes are suspended, with the exception of visits required for critical and compassionate circumstances •O ver 70 and medically vulnerable individuals, are advised to continue to exercise personal judgement strictions two weeks ago. The absence of domestic tourists, after people were instructed to remain in their county, was the first blow. “We should have gone to Level 5 two weeks ago and got it done quicker,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am very nervous about the whole thing. When we reopen again in December we could be back in Level 3. We will really rely on the local support to get us through Christmas.” Customers can continue to order online at www.caraghjewellers.com.

What Level 5 restrictions mean for motorists | By Sean Moriarty The Government has classed The Driver Testing Service, the National Driver Licence Service, the National Car Testing Service and the Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Testing Service as essential services.
DRIVING TEST
Customers who have an appointment for a driving test over the next six weeks, and who is an essential worker involved in the provision of essential services and retail outlets should attend their driving test as normal. Anyone looking for a new driving test appointment and falls into either of these categories should first apply for a driving test online and contact the RSA by emailing urgentdrivingtest@rsa.ie. It may be useful to bring proof of your appointment if stopped by a member of An Garda Síochána on your way to sit your test. Those not involved in the provision of essential services or essential retail outlets should cancel your test appointment online. Do not call or email the RSA to cancel your test.
NATIONAL DRIVER LICENCE SERVICE
Anyone who has an appointment at an NDLS centre over the next six weeks, and who is an essential worker involved in the provision of essential services and retail outlets should attend their appointment as normal. Anyone not involved in the provision of essential services or essential retail outlets and you have a booking over the next six weeks, should cancel their booking on www.ndls.ie. Those 70 years of age and over will be contacted directly by the NDLS and invited to renew their licence or permit by post.
DRIVER THEORY TEST
The Government has not classified the Driver Theory Test (DTT) as an essential service therefore it has suspended the provision of the service for a period of six weeks.
NATIONAL CAR TEST
The National Car Testing Service (NCTS) has been identified as an essential service. Anyone with an existing appointment to attend an NCT centre should attend as normal and is exempt from Level 5 travel restrictions. Vehicle owners requiring retests should attend at the NCT test centre as normal. Cash will not be accepted at the NCT when making payment.
COMMERCIAL VEHICLE ROADWORTHINESS TESTING
The CVRT has been identified as an essential service and centres remain open. Anyone with an appointment to attend a CVRT centre should go as normal and are exempt from Level 5 travel restrictions.
APPROVED DRIVING INSTRUCTOR
Approved Driving Instructors have been classified as providing an essential service. ADIs can continue to provide instruction during Level 5 to people who have a booking reserved to undergo a driving test.
FURTHER TRAVEL: Former Mayor of Killarney Sean O'Grady says the elderly should be allowed to travel outside 5k.
Allow elderly travel outside 5k says former mayor | By Sean Moriarty Former Mayor of Killarney Sean O’Grady is concerned that the second lockdown could have mental health ramifications for elderly people in society. The new restrictions that came into place say that while those over 70 do not have to cocoon like before, they do have to restrict their movements and have to exercise their own judgement on the places and people they visit. Everyone, regardless of age, is confined to a 5km radius of their own home.
No Christmas cheer as pubs predict closure for festive period | By Sean Moriarty The chances of enjoying Christmas drinks with friends and family are slim to none according to several Killarney pub owners this week. One bar owner believes that, at best, people can hope to enjoy a few drinks under Level 3 restrictions – outside in an area that caters for no more than 15 people.
Another publican says it will be St Patrick’s Day at the very earliest before any sort of normality can be expected. The Killarney Advertiser asked local publicans if they thought it would be possible to enjoy Christmas Eve drinks in town. “I am pessimistic about that,” Siobhan Linehan of Dan Linehan’s Bar on College St said. “At best it will be Level 3 and we will be having a few pints outside. I have given up trying to predict
things more than a fortnight in advance, things change that quickly.” Pat O’Sullivan runs the Tatler Jack Bar on Plunkett St. “It won’t be happening,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We will be lucky if we can by St Patrick’s Day or beyond it.” Both publicans acknowledged the health crisis and that measures are necessary to stop the spread of COVID-19. However, both said there are other is-
O’Grady, who is 75, says this is too restrictive and with proper self-management the elderly should be allowed travel further than 5kms. “Why can’t we go for a drive around the Ring of Kerry for a day, we can bring our own packed lunch and we don't have to meet anyone,” he said. “Before the last lockdown, myself and my wife Kitty went off exploring towns and villages in Cork and Limerick, places we never had time to stop before. We wore masks, long before we were asked to wear them and it was perfectly safe. Confining us is not the right answer.” sues, like mental health and isolation that need to be addressed too. “My brother and his family come home to Killarney [from London] every Christmas, they are not coming this year, that will be hard on families,” added Siobhan. “Mental health will be a big thing,” added Pat. “Some of my customers would not drink during the week, they would come in to watch a match, maybe drink a coke and meet people.” Meanwhile, while the shutters are down the bills keep rising, mortgages, stock and utility bills need to be paid, and Pat believes that several bars won't make it to the other side of the current lockdown adding to the country’s recession and unemployment rate.

HOLD FIRM: Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen is appealing to people to redouble their efforts to curb the spread of the Coronavirus.
"It’s important that we hold firm" - Mayor of Kerry | By Michelle Crean
The Mayor of Kerry has joined with two Cork mayors this week to appeal to people to adhere to public health restrictions and redouble their efforts to curb the spread of the Coronavirus. In a joint video message, which is being shared on social media platforms, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Joe Kavanagh, the Cathaoirleach of Cork County Council, Cllr Mary Lenihan-Foley, and the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen have urged all
those they represent to make a renewed effort to protect themselves and others at this critical phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. The three local authorities work closely together through long-established regional emergency management structures and since the beginning of the pandemic have been coordinating the interagency and regional response to the Coronavirus with the support of other agencies like the Health Service Executive and An Garda Síochána. The joint message for the three mayors acknowledges that people are finding the restrictions challenging but says

Kerry County Council’s Senior Management Team met on Tuesday to consider the Level 5 category of COVID-19 restrictions and its implications for the services which the Council provides to the people of Kerry. In accordance with the Government’s list of essential services, Council services will continue to be provided to the public including housing construction, housing maintenance, fire and water services,
environmental, street cleaning and waste services, public conveniences, planning services, roadworks and road repairs and maintenance, greenway projects and other services, having close regard to the prevailing public health guidelines. Public parks, beaches and playgrounds remain open and the advice remains to observe the Government guidance on travel limits (5km), social distancing and hand hygiene. In the interests of public health, Kerry County Council is strongly recommending that members of the public avoid visiting Council buildings and public coun-
that there is too much at stake if public health guidance is ignored. "This is such a challenging time for all of us," Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen said. "Like everyone in Kerry, I know people and families who have been severely impacted by the Coronavirus. Unfortunately, nobody is immune. It’s understandable that we are all getting weary and anxious about restrictions on how we live our lives. But there is so much at stake. I know this is a challenge for all of us. But remember, everyone has a part to play. It’s important that we hold firm." ters where possible and that they engage with staff by phone, email and online in the first instance. Surge in demand for Kerry domestic abuse service A Kerry service who provides a vital lifeline to victims of domestic abuse has this week said that they are responding to a surge in demand for their services. | By Michelle Crean The number of phone calls looking for support has doubled this year so far in comparison to the same period in 2019 with requests for refuge and outreach supports, ADAPT Kerry Women’s Refuge and Support Services told the Killarney Advertiser. "Since March of this year we are offering a 24 hour phone line on 066 7129100 in order to respond to the extra challenges that women living with domestic violence now face during this pandemic," Catherine Casey General Manager of the service said. "There have been 150 requests for space
since the start of the year and we have been able to offer accommodation to 58 families in our refuge so far this year. We have referred many other families to other support services including other refuges and homeless services. We see a definite demand for support with more women reaching out each week. We supported 91 women to access legal supports in the first six months of 2020." Locally the service is very encouraged by the response during the earlier lockdown from Gardai and many other services who prioritised domestic violence responses and the safety of women and children and indeed Domestic Violence has been identified as a national priority in this pandemic, she added.
NEWS LEVEL 5
"But despite this, Budget 2021 allocations for domestic violence services see no identifiable dedicated budget lines in any of the votes or sub-headings and this is a serious concern for our sector when we are a frontline essential service. We know that this Christmas will be a difficult time for our clients and we know that we also receive a generous response from the public. We are asking that this year in order to keep everyone as safe as possible that if you are considering donating to our service that you consider using the donate button on our website kerryrefuge.com or purchase gift cards/vouchers that we can give to families. This will help us to be safe and still support the many families we know." However, their charity shop is closed for the next six weeks due to Level 5 restrictions. COVID Restrictions Support Scheme (CRSS) Where, as a result of the restrictions, a business has been required to temporarily shut their premises or operate at significantly reduced levels - with the result that turnover for that period will be no more than 25% of the average weekly turnover for a period equal to the same number of weeks in 2019 (or using 2020 turnover figures for new businesses) - that business will qualify under the COVID Restrictions Support Scheme. Revenue will publish guidelines on the registration process and on the operation of the scheme in due course. The relief will operate as a cash payment
equal to 10% of the average weekly value of the 2019 business’s turnover up to €20,000 and 5% thereafter, subject to a maximum weekly payment of €5,000, for the same number of weeks as the restricted period. The scheme will operate on a self-assessment basis and is conditional on the taxpayer continuing to file all tax returns on time, holding a current tax clearance certificate and on the intention to resume the business when the restrictions are lifted. The scheme will run from October 13, 2020 until March 31 , 2021. For example a Bed and Breakfast which had an income of €52,000 (excluding VAT) for the year ended December 31, 2019 - on October 21, 2020 - the busi-
ness closed in line with Government restrictions. The Level 5 restrictions mean that the business will have to remain closed until December 1 and, as a result, they expect that it will have no turnover in that same period.
BASED ON:
a) the fact that official COVID restrictions are in place which prohibit customers from accessing the premises, requiring to temporarily close.
AND
b) reasonable expectation that it will have no turnover until December 2, the business is entitled to apply to Revenue for an Advance Credit for Trading Ex-
"Every resource necessary will be made available to stop the spread of the virus" says HSE | By Michelle Crean A joint statement has been issued from senior HSE management in the Cork and Kerry region saying they'll "make available every resource necessary to stop the spread of the virus". The HSE area crisis management team for Cork and Kerry has met several times this week and has discussed the Government decision that additional measures
are needed to contain the spread of COVID-19 across the country. All HSE services in the region will continue to make available every resource necessary including: - Additional COVID-19 testing is now taking place at a new pop-up test site on the Douglas Road in Cork city. - The recruitment of additional staff for the testing system, allowing them to ramp up testing capacity significantly and offer a rapid turn-around on tests - 94% of referrals get a test appointment either
on the same day or the next morning. - Regional Community Response Teams are providing ongoing support to private nursing homes in the region. - Precautions are in place in all healthcare settings so that vital health services can still be provided. Health services across the region will remain open, and no one should delay seeking advice from any healthcare professional if it’s needed. Anyone with an appointment should presume that their appointment is going ahead unless told
penses (ACTE) for the period October 21 to December 1, which constitutes a claim period. The amount of the ACTE that he is entitled to for this claim period will be calculated by reference to his turnover for 2019 and the number of full weeks that comprise the claim period, as follows: Average weekly turnover 2019; €1,000 (i.e. €52,000/52); 10% of €100; €100 per week by six weeks ACTE is €600. otherwise. Chair of the HSE Area Crisis Management Team Michael Fitzgerald thanked the public for their support. “We know that this re-introduction of restrictions will be difficult for the people of the region. However, we also know that taking action now is in everyone’s best interests. We know this is difficult, but we have suppressed this virus in the past and we can do it again if we work together,” he said. “We in Cork Kerry Community Healthcare are prioritising the smooth running of the testing system. Appointments for tests are arranged very quickly, and the test itself is very fast,” he added.

MARATHON MAN: TJ Flynn will run a marathon in Canada tomorrow (Saturday) in memory of his late father Tommy.
Killarney man to run Canadian marathon in memory of late father | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney man will tomorrow (Saturday) run 14 laps of the Canadian village he now calls home in memory of his late father. TJ Flynn, who is originally from Ballaugh, will run the equivalent of a marathon around Waterloo, a small town not far from the famous Niagara Falls, to raise money for Irish Cancer Society night nurses. His late father, Tommy, died from cancer last year and the Flynn family remain indebted to the night nurses who helped them during their difficult time. TJ originally planned to run this year’s Galway marathon which was scheduled for October 3, but with the event cancelled and TJ unable to get home due to COVID-19 restrictions he decided he and a few friends will tackle their own event in Canada. They will lap the village of Waterloo 14 times in an effort to make up the correct marathon mileage and TJ has set a sub-
three-hour target for the run. “When dad passed away at home last year, the help and support that nurses and carers gave us during the last days of his life defied words. We will forever be indebted. We truly will," TJ told the Killarney Advertiser. “Shortly after we buried dad, my brother and cousins said we would run a marathon for the Irish Cancer Society night nurses. Because of COVID, I haven't been able to get home this year, and marathons have been cancelled all over the world. So, I'm running this over here in Canada. Before dad passed away, we weren't fully aware of the critical role that the Irish Cancer Society fulfils. We are now, and we know that many families rely on their services, that there are families relying on them at this very moment in all parishes of our great county and country." TJ is no stranger to extreme events having previously contested an Iron Man event in Canada in 2017. He is also well-known locally and is the author of two novels: ‘Princess of Pig Skins’ and ‘Screaming at the Sky’.

AWARD: Ben Cussen, Aoife O'Brien, Darja Puzanova, Julia Olabode and Caoimhe Fleming awarded this week for their 'Be Dementia Aware' Young Social Innovators project. Photo: Michelle Crean
Students' Dementia project receives another award Socially conscious secondary school students from Killarney have received another award for their dedication to Dementia awareness. | By Michelle Crean The group 'Be Dementia Aware' from Killarney Community College, who appeared just weeks ago on RTÉ's 'Today Show' with Maura and Dáithí, received the Young Social Innovators (YSI) 'Schools of Excellence Award' on Tuesday. The award, which they'll physically receive in December due to the current restrictions, recognises the commitment
and leadership within schools in supporting student and teacher involvement in social innovation education. Students Ben Cussen, Aoife O'Brien, Darja Puzanova, Julia Olabode and Caoimhe Fleming, now in Leaving Cert, began their project when in Transition Year and have won many awards including Cork Speakout, a National Young Social Innovators Social Media Award in Croke Park, and earlier this year a Garda Youth Award. Some school teachers with five-years
of participation in YSI received the 'Let Them Shine' award including their hardworking teacher Lorraine Crowley. "We started our YSi project in Transition Year," student Darja told the Killarney Advertiser. "We researched different topics and spoke about different issues. Some students had relatives and teachers had family members with Dementia and told us some very touching stories. We are thrilled with this award. It helps promote awareness on Dementia."
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT Addressing the awards participants and winners, President of Ireland and Young Social Innovators Patron, Michael D. Hig-
gins, wrote: “I believe passionately that young people can be the powerful catalysts for social change when given the opportunity and support, such as that which we showcase at Young Social Innovators. I want to say how inspired I am by your endeavours. You are the future, but we need you to help shape the future that you will inherit. The future is not something provided to you, but something you create. Young Social Innovators gives you an opportunity to do that.” Principal Stella Loughnane noted that the school is very lucky to have such a great bunch of conscientious students. "We count ourselves extremely lucky to have such an exemplary group of students whom are not only role models for their peers but also exemplify everything good about teenagers and what they can achieve. The awareness they have created about such a notable cause is amazing and we are delighted their achievements are now being recognised and celebrated on a national level."
Calls to postpone winter time change | By Sean Moriarty With the clock set to go back one hour on Sunday signalling the arrival of winter time, Cllr Michael Gleeson is calling on the Government to postpone the time change until after the six week Level 5 lockdown. He is concerned that the darker evenings will cause further stress to people who
already feel isolated. During the first lockdown which began in March, just as the evenings were getting longer, people were still able to get out and about, even within the 5km limit. From next week, Cllr Gleeson says people will be confined to their homes from 5pm each evening until 8am the next morning. “I believe that the Government should seriously consider reverting to new time for the six-week lockdown thus allowing
the elderly, the newly unemployed and all others who are restricted an additional hour of evening daylight during which they could recreate, work out the back or in their gardens,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Most importantly it would reduce the length of time of their confinement indoors which many people find very difficult and will be even more so now due to the additional hours of darkness.” One of the reasons Day Light Saving was
introduced was to allow children travel to school each morning in daylight. “As most school children travel by either cars or buses to schools, the additional darkness during the mornings would not be an undue in convenience for the six weeks. I'm sure that the innate generosity of children and young adults would wish to make life as tolerable as possible for their grandparents and for their elderly neighbours,” he added.

DONATING: This year's 54321 Challenge raised funding of almost €35,000 for three charities. Pictured were: Catherine Foley, Mark Murphy, Maura O’Sullivan, Marian Kelly, Sean Scally and Caroline Lynch. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy
Annual challenge raises almost €35k for charities Almost €35,000 was handed over to multiple Kerry charities at the weekend as organisers of this year's 54321 Challenge handed over the funds. | By Michelle Crean This year’s selected charities included Skellig Stars which helps children and adult athletes with special needs, Kerry Hospice Foundation, and Enable Ireland Kerry. Participants who took part in the gruelling four day challenge which included three cycles and two mountain climbs met the charities at Ross Castle where they handed over the money. Now in its eight year, the 54321 Challenge was very different this year as it was scaled back to just a few participants due to the COVID restrictions.
However, they still managed to raise a colossal amount - a whopping €34,768.97 - thanks to the help of the generous public. This brings the total raised to date to €241,352.00 supporting a number of very deserving Kerry charities over the years. A major contributor to this year’s fundraising efforts was a number of Spinathon Days where this year's participants, volunteers from the various causes, family and friends took to the streets in different locations around the county on spinning bikes. These events took place in Killarney, Cahersiveen, Killorglin, Listowel,

Dingle, and Tralee.
RESTRICTING NUMBERS The Challenge had grown in numbers over the years, and this year was to be no different with a large number of participants ready to undertake the challenge, one of the organisers TJ O'Connor explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "Due to the current COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic and the corresponding lockdown, and health and safety recommendations from the HSA around large groups of people, the 54321 Challenge committee made the tough decision that all 50 participants could not complete this year's Challenge. The top priority was to ensure the safety of its participants, and in the current climate this extended to their families,
neighbours, friends etc. So instead the decision was made that the Challenge would revert to the original seven participants undertaking the four-day challenge, which took place from Thursday, August 20 to Sunday 23 inclusive." Not only did the volunteers cycle the Ring of Kerry, they also climbed Carrauntuohil, cycled from Killarney to the foot of Mount Brandon and then climbed it! And although exhausted, the last leg of their journey was a cycle from Dingle to Killarney. "Thanks to everyone who made these Spinathons possible, to all the volunteers, and thanks to all the members of the public who gave their support and generous donations, and thanks to An Garda Síochána and especially James Foley for his help," he said. “If this year has taught us anything, it is to be thankful for what we have, our health is our wealth, and the power of people working together can get us through some of the most difficult situations. We are so glad that we went ahead with the 54321 Challenge 2020 and that the monies raised will provide some comfort to those availing of the services offered by this year causes.”
AWARENESS: St Brigid’s Secondary School ran a COVID-19 Awareness Art Competition for all students to raise awareness of good practices. Students were invited to make a poster either A4 or A3 on one or all of the following messages: reminder to sanitise when leaving/entering a room, reminder to wear your mask, reminder to social distance where possible, and winners included from senior cycle. Smaller numbers but huge celebrations Numbers may have been restricted to just 25 - but that didn't stop Linda Galvin and Brian Farrell having the best fun at their wedding in Ballyseede Castle on Saturday.

WEDDING OF THE WEEK
26
Linda from Raheen, Glenflesk is daughter of Dan and Mary Galvin. She married Brian, son of Martin and Carmel Farrell, from Castleknock in Dublin. The couple met in McGovern's Pub in Phibsborough, Dublin in 2012 when Linda was working as a teacher in the capital. Brian, who works in GMHD, proposed in Spain in October last year after getting down on one knee - and, while it was a very special moment, Linda missed it! "He went down on one knee to "tie his shoelace" and I just kept on walking! He had to call me back and do it again - I didn't make it easy for him." And as their wedding plans progressed over the following months, the couple were hit with the COVID bombshell. However, they were able to keep their original date and had no option but to slash numbers down to meet Level 3 restrictions. It also meant that many cherished family and friends from abroad couldn't make it either - but Linda said that they made the best of it. The bridal party included Linda's sister
Claire as Chief Bridesmaid and friend Maighréad Lynch as Bridesmaid. Best Man was Brian's best friend Donal Keogh, and Groomsman was Dean Ladrigan. Their three sweet little flowergirls were Ailbhe, Clara and Sarah McDonald. "It was a fabulous day, we loved every minute of it," Linda, a supply teacher between Glenflesk, Tiernaboul, Raheen, Coolick, and Lough Guitane, told the Killarney Advertiser. "We were very lucky that it was our original date. If we had to do it again we wouldn't change anything. The hotel was fabulous - amazing. We had the best day." Linda's hair was done by Laura Lou Hair, make-up by Aifric and flowers by florist Breda Nagle. Noel McAuliffe and Leonard Casey provided the music during their spiritual ceremony with celebrant Helen O'Sullivan. Entertainment later in the evening was by local couple Derry and Rosie Healy. With the current restrictions the couple couldn't travel too far and opted for a few days break in the Plaza Hotel.

DERELICT: The site of the ambush has fallen into disrepair.
There are calls for a permanent outdoor museum to be built on the site of the Headford Ambush. | By Sean Moriarty The centenary of the event, which marked Kerry’s arrival in the War of Independence, will take place on March 21 next year. It was one of the key local events in the 1921 War of Independence, carried out by the Irish Republican Army on March 21. An IRA brigade intercepted a train carrying British troops who were travelling between Kenmare and Killarney. The subsequent gunfight left 14 men dead; nine British soldiers, two IRA volunteers and three civilians. Local man Dan Allman was one of the leaders of the ambush, but he and his colleague Jimmy Baily were the two IRA men killed in the attack. A monument stands at the site of the ambush - but this has fallen into disrepair. The site is also significant in the history of railway transport in the county. Headford Junction linked Kenmare and Kilgarvan with the rest of the country including Great Southern Railway branch lines to Mallow and Killarney. Killarney Advertiser owners Cormac and Noelle Casey now live in the house that served as the station’s tea rooms up until the 1960s. In recent years, Irish Rail replaced the manual level crossing at the junction with an automated crossing but the former

site has also fallen into disrepair. Mr Casey believes with the centenary fast approaching that the time is right to repair the monument and to also mark the significance of the railway industry in the area.
DESIGN
To that end, staff at KC Print, the Killarney Advertiser’s parent company, have come up with a design for an outdoor museum that would mark the event and, at the same time, honour Kerry’s contribution to the Civil War effort and the railway heritage of the county. “Up to this point in the war, Kerry’s effort was considered weak and that we were not playing our part, but the Headford Ambush was very significant as it was central to the start of the Kerry effort,” he said. “Headford Junction is also very important in the railway history in the country. One of the longest serving steam engines ran on this line up until the 1960s. Our proposal is to develop a low maintenance outdoor museum that can
be visited at any time.” Paving from the now derelict Headford railway platform could be used to construct the museum that would also feature steel artworks as a direct link to the railway industry. Kerry County Council officials lodged an application for funding to the Department of Culture, Arts and Gaeltacht and money to the tune of €10,000 was confirmed this week. The funding was welcomed by local politicians including Deputy Danny HealyRae, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, Niall Kelleher, Mayor of Killarney Brendan Cronin, and Kerry Mayor Michael Connor-Scarteen. “Myself and Maura thank the committee for their great efforts and works and wish them all the best with the works,” said Danny Healy-Rae. “Cllr Maura HealyRae had a motion before Kerry County Council requesting them to apply to the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht for funding and I also made a submission to the Department about this.”
Cllr Kelleher lives very close to the monument. “I welcome this news for the locality, it is important to mark this occasion,” he said. Killarney Mayor Brendan Cronin was another local councillor who pushed for funding for this project both at Municipal and county level.
FAMILY LINK
County Mayor Connor-Scarteen has a direct family link to the ambush. "I grew up hearing so much about the Headford Ambush which took place in March 1921, it was undoubtedly one of the most significant military engagements in Ireland during the War of Independence,” he said. "I'm proud of the integral part played by Tom O'Connor-Scarteen, my grand-uncle who was the last of the IRA to leave the ambush site. I want to thank the local committee and fellow councillors who also pushed for funding.” Local committee members include Derry Healy, Tina Healy (who is a grand-niece of Allman), Jimmy Casey, Seamus Moynihan, Liz Spillane and Mike Scannell.

Kerry International Film Festival's first online event a massive success The Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF) has just completed its 21st Edition, and are proud to announce that it has been one of their most successful years of celebrating film to date.
Despite facing their most challenging year thus far due to COVID-19 restrictions, KIFF has been overwhelmed by the immense support and interest gained, not only at a local level, but also both nationally and internationally. To ensure the safety of KIFF audiences everywhere during an international pandemic, KIFF chose to present an exclusively online festival from October 15 -18. Shifting to a fully digital programme was a new process for KIFF and it presented some interesting challenges along the way, however, a state-of-the-art festival was successfully delivered due to support from local business, the determination of a remarkably dedicated team, and via the invaluable backing from key funding partners such as The Arts Council, Kerry County Council and Creative Ireland. As a result of going entirely online, KIFF are delighted to say that they have reached a wider audience base and have grown interest and participation in the festival far beyond The Kingdom. "We are overjoyed with the positive feedback we have received on every level this year," General Manager of KIFF, Sean Mulchi-
nock said. "Filmmakers, audiences, sponsors and local businesses alike have all come out in support of KIFF 2020. This support has made a significant difference to us as a festival and it reiterates the value that people place on KIFF, both regionally and nationally. We are privileged to be associated with all of our supporters and we cannot thank them enough for boosting up our festival, particularly during these challenging times."
TRUA AWARD
As well as presenting an online film festival for the first time, KIFF 2020 also saw the introduction of their inaugural
TRUA award, an award that celebrates compassionate filmmaking that promotes positive change. The recipient of the 2020 TRUA Award went to 'This Land'. Upon receiving the award, Director, Zithelo Bobby Mthombeni said he "wanted to start a conversation". "I wanted to get people talking, not only about how people in Ireland have suffered racism but also the positive impact immigration has had on Irish culture, whether that’s through food, music, media or activism. It was also an opportunity to talk about how Ireland’s culture has changed in the last 10 years. The creative community in Ireland is quite inspiring right now, and
it is important to showcase what we in Ireland have to offer in terms of talent and diversity." Due to the immense success of KIFF 2020, the team are already making plans to incorporate a permanent digital element to the festival going forward. However, they are also excited to have the opportunity to work with partners in October 2021 and to welcoming audiences back to physical screenings. Whatever the future may bring, KIFF have showcased that they are here to stay and that they are dedicated to delivering their bespoke festival to worldwide audiences next year and beyond.

read 101 Reasons Why Ireland is Better than England By Pat Fitzpatrick For over one hundred years Ireland has taken every opportunity to prove it is better than England - but never before has someone been brave enough to write a book to highlight it. Corkman, Pat Fitzpatrick, has released a book entitled '101 Reasons Why Ireland is Better than England' just in time for the Christmas market. The book, which is a tongue-in-cheek sweep across the two nations, is aimed at Irish people, wherever they live, not to mention the 10 million English people who will probably move over here after Brexit. Pat is a columnist with the Sunday Independent, Irish Examiner and Eumom.ie. He also has a weekly slot on RTÉ’s Today Show with Maura Derrane and Daithi O Sé, where he takes a sideways glance at modern lifestyle and culture. His TV writing credits include The Cutting Edge, The Mario Rosenstock Show and the Saturday
Night Show. Pat is also a regular on radio shows such as Countrywide, Ryan Tubridy, The Dave Fanning Show and Neil Prendeville. His previous books include: '101 Reasons Why Cork is Better than Dublin' and 'No Sex No Sleep, so you’re going to be a father'. Published by Mercier Press, '101 Reasons Why Ireland is Better than England', is available nationwide and online for €6.99.

Coming in at 2 minutes, 30 seconds, 'Don’t Say A Word' is an exercise in simplicity, intended to reflect the band's approach to polite conversation. As they say “the song was recorded in response to it being written". Formed in late 2019 the band is comprised of three ex-members of The

The Zen Arcade likes to do it differently and birthed a podcast series and multiple fanzines before making a record, but it’s been the right move. 'Don’t Say A Word' is a short sharp invigorating calling card.

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Ways to make your life easier in the garden Gardening is a tough job, and anyone who doesn’t agree obviously has a gardener doing the work! This ‘hobby’ involves bends and stretches which would put any gym through its paces, and the lifting involved is worthy of a Schwarzenegger. Seeing family members getting arthritis, ageing, and having had a small operation myself, I feel this article is not wasted if I mention the possibilities available which can make life easier for us all. There are many tools out there which have been well designed, however, you have to give it some thought and we gardeners are notorious for putting up with adverse conditions – in this case old, trusty tools. I will start with digging tools. Most of us have the standard trowel, fork and bulb planter. Are you aware they all come in long handled versions as well? These make life easier – there is no need to overextend yourself when trying to reach the other side of the veg bed, and there is no need to bend quite so far to reach the ground. Spades, forks and rakes are all available with fibreglass handles these days, making them less susceptible to rotting, as well as substantially lighter. When buying a spade, make sure it is not too high to put your foot on comfortably – also, I find that the slightly smaller ones prevent me from levering and digging up too much at a time. Gardeners will know what I mean! If you do not have acres of garden, the cheaper tool will sometimes suit you just fine. While it is generally true what they say – "you get what you pay for" - not everyone needs the super quality, durable item… which is usually significantly heavier. Cutting tools are often an abused tool – and they are seldom sharpened. A
blunt tool makes for heavy work, and in the case of secateurs often causes a jolt to the wrist, which is not good for the joint. Keep tools sharp and springs well oiled. Most importantly don’t try to cut stems which are too thick! Loppers are an excellent tool to invest in – not only for cutting high branches, but also those low ones, reducing time spent doubled over. There are small loppers, about 50cm long, which are ideal for using instead of a secateurs if your wrist is weak. They are also handy for getting into thorny shrubs. Geared and ratchet systems take the work out of the job – I am not into physics, but there is less human force needed when there is a cog involved – that’s all I need to know! In most cases buy a ‘bypass’ cutter as opposed to an ‘anvil’ type cutter, as the former has two sharp edges, reducing the power you need to cut through something. Height adjustable kneelers are a must, they are a bit annoying to cart around, but that is why a small light wheelbarrow is so handy! As I write this, I wonder whether maybe this article should be aimed at the gardener’s family members, as we ourselves are notorious for going into a garden store to buy a new secateurs, but see that must have plant instead! Take a look at your parents and relatives, assess if they are having any trouble and see if you can help them out. I know from experience that I myself am reluctant to admit weakness! It is important to keep gardening for your mental and physical well-being - but please do make it as safe and enjoyable a s possible.

Works being carried out to improve water quality Works to replace 1.1 kilometers of problematic water mains in Ballymallis to improve water quality and tackle high levels of water leakage began on Monday and are expected to be completed in seven weeks. Irish Water, working in partnership with Kerry County Council, is tackling the old, brittle, problematic pipes which are being decommissioned and replaced with new water mains. The works are being undertaken off the N72 Killorglin/Killarney road, from the crossroads near Kerry Woolen Mills, Listry to Ballymallis Cross, approximately 1.1km south. The works will involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply. These works are part of Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which will see €500m invested nationally to tackle problematic pipes and leakage in Ireland’s ageing water network. The works will be carried out by Kerry County Council on behalf of Irish Water. “As they get older, some pipes have a high level of leakage as well as being subject to frequent bursts,” Steven Blennerhassett, Leakage Reduction Programme
Regional Lead, Irish Water, said. “Replacing the old, damaged pipes will ensure better water quality and a more reliable water supply. The new water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages. These improvements to the water network are essential in providing a safe, secure and reliable water supply, now and into the future.” Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact and disruption to commuters. Traffic management will be in place during this time. Local access will be maintained, but it is advised that through road users take alternative routes for the duration of the works. Emergency access will be maintained at all times. The works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to any planned water shut offs. “We will work with the community to minimise disruption. Customers can phone Irish Water on 1850 278 278 if they have any further questions about the project." For more information visit National Leakage Reduction Programme www.water. ie/projects-plans/national-projects/leakage-reduction-programme/.

New farmers health programme lunched Agricultural advisors are to engage with farmers on their health and well-being over the farm gate. The programme ‘On Feírm Ground’ will be led by charity, The Men’s Development Network, as part of Engage, the National Men’s Training Programme and will train 800 agricultural advisors. The research and resource development stage of ‘On Feírm Ground’ has been on-going for the past 12 months with the first training scheduled to be delivered to agricultural advisors in early November 2020. Launching the initiative Minister of State with responsibility for Research & Development, Farm Safety and New Market Development, Martin Heydon TD, and Minister of State for Public Health, Well-Being and the National Drugs Strategy, Frank Feighan TD, discussed the importance of such joint collaborations between Departments and other stakeholders allowing for innovative thinking and the development of holistic approaches to addressing the sensitive issue of farmers’ health and well-being. Minister Heydon reaffirmed the crucial importance of health and well-being in ensuring improvements in farm safety. “There is ample evidence out there to show that farmer health and well-being play a major role in farm safety," he said. "I know that the training of agricultural

As well as launching the initiative, an interim report was made available by the
research partners at IT Carlow, led by Dr Noel Richardson, Director of IT Carlow's National Centre for Men's Health. “The research findings recommend that when designing the ‘On Feírm Ground’ training programme it focuses on the individual social determinants effecting the health and well-being of both male and female farmers and adopts a strengthsbased approach to farmers’ health and sets out clear roles, responsibilities and boundaries for advisors in their health role.”
Biden’s promise to undocumented Irish President Trump’s election rival Joe Biden has promised to help over 11 million undocumented residents of the United States gain citizenship. The announcement will be welcomed in Irish circles in America. It is estimated that there are between 15,000 and 20,000 Irish people living illegally in America. “I will prioritize legislation to cre-
ate a roadmap for the 11 million undocumented people who have been strengthening our country for years and preserve the longstanding directive of our immigration system to reunite families and enhance our diversity,” Biden said earlier this week. “We have shown immigration reform leadership informed by empathy and an understanding of Ireland’s experience – especially the challenge of today’s
Travis Gienger (40), who was at home most of the lockdown, watered his winning entry 10 times a day making it a winner at the contest in California. Travis spent a lot of his free time in the pumpkin patch in his backyard feeding and fertilizing his plants at least twice each day and watering them 10 times a day. However, his biggest challenge was transporting it to the contest 35 hours away. “It was nerve-wracking because with every bump on the road I kept thinking, ‘is it going to make it?’” And then finally it got weighed, it was the last one, and oh, my gosh, it’s been incredible!” Gienger said after his victory. The first-time pumpkin champ won $16,450, or $7 per pound, for the lumpy, orange pumpkin. Gienger’s pumpkin was the second-heaviest ever weighed at the 40-year-old California event, but it was still far from a US record set in 2018 when a grower in New Hampshire produced a pumpkin weighing more than 2,500 pounds (1,134 kilograms).

He warned the United Kingdom that they cannot expect trade deals with the US if the treaty is put at risk. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be privately hoping Trump wins. One of his key Brexit manifestos was to increase trade with America as a replacement for European trade. He is also willing to gamble the Good Friday Agreement to get what he wants.

‘Gogglebox Ireland’ to adjust cast line-up due to restrictions Virgin Media Television has confirmed a number of changes to the cast of 'Gogglebox Ireland' as Government COVID-19 restrictions impact production.
Creative Tech Fest to celebrate youth creativity More than one thousand young people from youth clubs, schools and gaelscoileanna across Ireland will come together, virtually, on Wednesday next (October 28) for the ESB Creative Tech Fest. In partnership with Camara Ireland, the annual bilingual event will celebrate the innovation and creativity of young people who participate in TechSpace programmes across STEAM, digital creativity and computer science projects. The live event will be broadcast from Carlow Arts Centre directly into the homes of young TechSpacers across the country. As well as announcing over 20 award winners on the day, there will also be performances and inspiring tech talks from Daithí Ó Sé, Chris is Ainm Dom, and Cairde. This year’s ESB Creative Tech Fest event was launched by Shaun Samra, an 11-year-
old TechSpacer from Finglas, Co Dublin who, along with his friends from Finglas Youth Resource Centre afterschool group, won the ESB TechSpacer of the Month award in June for his creative rap 'Anxiety' – written by Shaun about how anxiety has impacted him and his family. “We are very excited to showcase the inspiring work that has emerged from challenging circumstances this year though a virtual reality exhibition and live broadcast event," Marianne Checkley, CEO of Camara Ireland said. "We are also delighted to celebrate the innovative solutions that young people have created, which have had a real impact through our special Community Responder Award this year. We will miss the energy and atmosphere that the young people create at our annual celebrations, however, a virtual ESB Creative TechFest allows us to be even more accessible to young people in every community across Ireland.”
Viewers will be catching the usual wonderful reactions to the weeks' telly from all cast members who live together - but sadly not from those cast members that visit each other’s homes to take part. This week, viewers began to see the effects of the new rules as there was less of The Cabra Girls and none of David and John. Next week’s final episode of the new series will proceed without Barbara and Janet in Donegal, Tracie and Anita in The Liberties, Cavan boys 'The Tully
Twins' and a reduced line up from The Cabra Girls of just Gráinne and Ashley, and the new Lucan family being represented by just Gary and Lariche. “It’s such a shame that we have to tweak the cast so close to the end of the series," Series Producer of Gogglebox Ireland, David Noble, said. "They will be greatly missed but we are delighted that this show can be kept on the road and more than confident that our remaining cast will deliver the usual hour of mid-week joy that is 'Gogglebox Ireland”. The final episode of the series will air on Wednesday, October 28 at a later time of 10pm.
Mick Galwey leads heartburn awareness campaign New research released by iReach to coincide with the launch of Heartburn Awareness Week, has found that more than a third (34%) of the population are living with heartburn. Now in its sixth year, the campaign, supported by GSK, aims to raise awareness of the symptoms and triggers of heartburn and encourage those living with frequent or occasional attacks to speak to their pharmacist about controlling the condition. The research, carried out among one thousand Irish adults, also found that 29% of Irish people living with heartburn experience attacks frequently with symptoms occurring more than twice a week. The biggest triggers of heartburn for those living with the condition in Ireland
are: eating rich or spicy foods (54%); eating too much (34%); and stress (31%). Unfortunately, for those living with the condition, one in five (20%) confirmed that their heartburn has worsened since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reasons cited for this included; COVID-19 related stress (51%); increased snacking (35%); and work related stress (25%). Former International and Munster rugby player, and frequent heartburn sufferer, Mick Galwey, explained why he is involved in this year’s campaign. “I’ve been living with frequent heartburn for years, it became so normal for me to ignore the burning pain," Mick said. "It wasn’t until it started to keep me up at night that I decided to tackle the problem head on. I now know what my triggers are; spicy food, coffee and stress, and
thanks to my healthcare provider, I know how to manage my symptoms. I’ve finally got my heartburn under control. I want to encourage those living with the condition to take a stand – figure out what your triggers are and speak to your pharmacist." Despite the condition affecting so many, only a third (34%) said that they had spoken to their pharmacist about managing their symptoms. Making simple lifestyle changes like; reviewing diet, quitting smoking and taking regular exercise can make a difference, but for those looking to control more frequent attacks it is recommended that a pharmacist is consulted. The campaign is urging those who’ve yet to seek support to speak to their pharmacist this week about how they can make life without heartburn their new normal.

It's all part of a campaign being run by BUMBLEance called 'BUZZ CUT' where the public can shave, cut or dye their hair to raise money for a great cause. The fundraiser has been a great success so far with over €2,050 raised so far and Jennifer’s page is still open on iDonate. "I decided to dye my hair pink to help the children who use the service,” Jennifer, who works as the charity’s Fundraising and Communications Manager, said. “I have been overwhelmed by the support of the public during these tough times. The Kerry Association London donated an amazing €1,000 to my fundraiser, which I am so grateful for, and will make a real difference." It was not easy to get Jennifer’s hair glowing neon but with the help of trusted hairdresser, Mary Mangan from Faha, it is looking great. “I’ve asked Mary for many styles over the years but this is by far the most outlandish,” Jennifer laughed.

BUMBLEance is part of The Saoirse Foundation which was founded by Castlemaine couple Mary and Tony Heffernan and it prides itself on delivering smiles to Ireland’s youngest patients. BUMBLEance is one hundred percent free for families and is the world’s first fully interactive, state-of-the-art Children’s National Ambulance Service. It provides a national service for critically and seriously ill children, who require transportation between their home and children’s hospitals, hospices, national treatment centres and respite centres. There have been over 11,000 trips nationwide since BUMBLEance’s inception and there are hundreds of families availing of the charity’s services nationwide. “At the end of 2019, a Southern Regional Service was launched which is specially for children in the Kerry, Cork, Limerick, South Tipperary and Waterford areas. Despite uncertainty due to the pandemic, the charity continues to help families from across the country including many Kerry families,” she said. “I am delighted to have been able to do my bit and it has been great fun. With hairdressers now closed for six weeks, it is looking like I will be pink for the immediate future!”

How to thrive and not just survive the second Lockdown Words matter - they shape perceptions which in turn shape intentions. And intentions shape just about everything. In March and April this year we heard and read about this often: “How to survive lockdown”. This is the sort of thing that makes me angry. Survive? We aren’t on this planet to merely survive. Let’s be honest, these survival guides are usually aimed at what we should eat and drink over - less, usually. Or more and then less to make up for the “more” you ate during the last lockdown. It’s hard to keep track. Leaving aside the peculiar notion of survival as nutritional deprivation, this strikes me as a pretty rough way to treat
yourself. What are we surviving, really? What if we flipped the script? Thrive through adversity. Thrive by nourishing your body with good food that makes you feel full and warm. Thrive by moving your body and doing awesome workouts powered by that great food. Hell, thrive through a long winter’s nap after a delicious meal. What if we let the things we love to do - being with the people most important to us, eating well, moving with abandon and resting at the right times - take us through this next six weeks? Stop looking at roadblocks, stop looking at surviving, and look at the opportunity and ask yourself: What if we thrived?

Sarah Dineen runs Caragh Jewellers on Plunkett St. She is also the treasurer of Knocknagree Ladies Football Club. The north-Cork club reached the junior semi-finals of the Cork County Championship this season but their run of success also came at a cost. The girls face additional physiotherapy and training bills. They also need to pay for post-match meals and other expenses related to running a successful club. But like every other club, COVID-19 has hit them hard and it has not been possible to run fundraisers during the year. Instead they are inviting people to walk, jog or cycle, one, two, five or 10 kilometres during the month of October in a virtual challenge. “We want to continue to be able to promote ladies sports,” Sarah told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was expensive maintaining the club this year and we are unable to run our usual fundraisers.” Participants can send a photo of the walk/run event, time recorded or the scenery, to Club PRO Maura O’Mahony on WhatsApp to 085 1450533. “Everyone who sends in any photo will be included into a draw for some spot prizes. Please observe Social Distancing if heading out with friends,” said

High intensity sessions work best for study Preparing for the State exams is like training for a marathon, in which case some effective planning and a strong work ethic combine to make the perfect training schedule for students.
INNOVATIVE: Larry O'Donoghue (Senior Consultant, CorkBIC) pictured with Timothy Lehane of 'Fanfund', winner of the CorkBIC Computer Science Entrepreneurship Award 2020 Award, and Professor Cormac Sreenan (Head of School of Computer Science and Information Technology at UCC).
UCC student wins award for innovative crowdfunding platform An innovative online platform which enables emerging artists to crowdfund their future projects has won its Cork developer an entrepreneurial award. Timothy Lehane's 'Fanfund' is a welcome development at a challenging time for artists. The Computer Science student from UCC won the CorkBIC Computer Science Entrepreneurship Award 2020 award worth €1,000. 'Fanfund', allows up-an-coming musicians to raise funds for future ventures, while gaining exposure to potential new listeners. News of 'Fanfund' comes at a challenging time for musicians who cannot earn an income through touring due to public health restrictions on gig venues. Artists can launch a funding round to raise capital from their existing fans and the platform’s user-base, which goes towards prospective concert/merchandise activities. The objective of the award is to encourage and support entrepreneurial activity by computer science students, based on their final year project. The entrepreneurship award is made possible by a generous donation from
CorkBIC which plays a hands-on role helping and advising start-ups, entrepreneurs and SMEs navigate the minefield of building business plans and propositions, raising finance, and pitching to investors. Over the past 30+ years, CorkBIC has worked with over 500 start-ups. Expressing his delight on winning the prize, Tim is continuing to work on his software platform with a view to marketing it in the near future. “I felt highly motivated towards realising my idea, as I had a definitive objective to work toward. The award is a fantastic opportunity to validate the integrity of my idea with people who have real industry experience,” Tim said. The runner up for the 2020 award is student Aidan Miskella, for his project on a software platform for companies to recruit and manage temporary employees. The UCC Organising Committee for the award comprises representatives from CSIT, UCC's IGNITE Programme, UCC’s Gateway, Blackstone LaunchPad at UCC, and UCC Innovation. The evaluation panel included external members with entrepreneurial experience.
If you haven’t gotten into the stride of study yet, don’t worry there is plenty of time but now is the time to start. Use the mid-term break to develop a well thought-out study plan and you will give yourself the best possible chance of realising your potential in June. Keeping the plan simple and achievable while staying focused on your exam targets will challenge you to achieve the goals you have set for yourself.
THE FOLLOWING TIPS WILL GET YOU STARTED
1. Write down the targets you hope to achieve in each subject. You need to aim to achieve this target in as many class tests and assignments as possible during the year if you are realistic of reaching it by June 2021. 2. Plan ahead and organise all your notes. Have a separate folder for each subject and divide them into the sections of the course. On an A4 page for each exam subject, make a list of all the topics/areas to be covered and keep this at the front of the folder. Tick off topics as you study and revise them. 3. Draw up a weekly study timetable and fill in your evening activities. Allow adequate time for homework on each evening and then allocate revision/ study slots of 40-45 minutes in duration to each evening. On days where you have a lot of homework it may be only possible to do one revision slot. It can work very well to assign a particular subject to a specific night, for example, geography on a Monday night, biology on a Tuesday night and so on. As the year goes on you will be increasing revision slots as homework decreases. Include all your subjects in revision slots at least once in the week, one per week day and the remainder at the weekend. Plan the sections you are going to revise at the beginning of each week and have all notes, texts, utensils

at hand. Don’t forget to include breaks and fun activities! 4. Stock up on highlighters, Post-It notes, mind-map templates, flashcards etc., to use for revision sessions.
HOW TO APPROACH A REVISION SESSION OF 40-45 MINUTES
Just like a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) session, you will get the maximum out of a revision session if you work hard and remain focused for 40-45 minutes rather than ineffective study for longer periods. Break it up as follows: · Survey the key headings, sub-headings, key points, diagrams, tables, maps etc (5 mins) · Read the important information carefully, take very brief notes if it helps but don’t overdo it. Concentrate on learning the content (20 mins) · Recall what you can by brainstorming what you can remember on a blank sheet of paper (5 mins) · Review what you are unsure about and have a look at an exam question on the topic to see how confident you would be to attempt it (10-15 mins) It isn’t an easy task to get and stay motivated for an entire exam year but if you can start early with a good study routine it will become habit before long and by putting in the hours with effective techniques you will cross the finishing line in June knowing you have given the exams your best shot!

Hickey’s dedication to grassroots motorsport One of Killarney and District Motor Club’s longest-serving competing members has described the efforts he went to to support entry-level motorsport in the current pandemic times. Like all sports, motorsport has suffered postponements and cancellations since March. There was some hope of a return to normal through the months of September and early October when smaller club events were allowed go ahead behind closed doors. While closed road rallying remains off the agenda for the foreseeable future, up until late last week events like autocross could go ahead. An autocross is a short time trial, usually run in a quarry or other similar private lands. Competitors get three to four runs over a course that is usually less than one kilometre in length. Autocross events are the polar opposite of the Rally of the Lakes for example which offers two-days of high-speed action over 120km of closed road stages. In early October, Clare Motor Club got a Motorsport Ireland permit to run an autocross event behind closed doors, at Ballycumber, County Offaly. John Hickey, who has been competing for 37 years, took on the eight hour round trip from his Headford home to compete in the event.

The Subaru Impreza driver’s reward about 12 minutes of competitive driving. “I left my house at 5am on a cold, dark winter morning for a four hour drive up to Ballycumber,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was the worst day that ever came, pouring rain all day. Most lads left after their first run, but I stayed soaking-wet, four hours from home. That is addiction to motorsport for you – in the middle of a pandemic. After 37 years of motorsport, I am spearheading the motorsport recovery.” Since the Clare Motor Club’s event in early October, and before this week’s new COVID-19 measures were announced, Motorsport Ireland said it was suspending all motorsport activity until further notice. As a result events cannot take place, even if they have national status or are run behind closed doors.

BT Ireland is delighted to announce that applications are now open for the Primary Science Fair which will take place alongside the first ever virtual BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition from January 6 to 8, 2021. BT Ireland is calling on primary school pupils to begin working on their projects to exhibit online in January. Applications are due on Friday, November 13. The Primary Science Fair is an excellent opportunity and starting point for budding young scientists who are curious and eager to learn about the possibilities of science, technology, engineering and maths by working on their own projects in a non-competitive environment. The Primary Science Fair aims to inspire pupils to pursue an interest in STEM and become future participants in the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. In loving memory of Nana and Da, James and Nell Horan Marian’s Terrace, Killarney whose anniversaries occur on the 23rd and 31st of October. If tears could build a stairway, and memories were a lane, We would walk right up to heaven and bring you back again. Our hearts still ache in sadness and secret tears still flow, What it meant to lose you, no one will ever know. A million times we needed you, a million times we cried, If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. We miss you more than you could know; we miss your smiles and the way you used to make us laugh It made everything worthwhile. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, the day God took you home.

Sweet is the sleep that heals all pain, We would not wake you to suffer again, God took your hands, we had to part, It eased your pain but broke our hearts,
Our hearts are full of memories, With pride we speak your name, Though life must go on without you, It will never be the same, Those special days will not return when we were all together, But the love and memories in our hearts, Will stay with us forever.
We have no doubt that you are safe, That you have moved to a brighter place, And those you loved that went before, Were waiting for you at Heaven’s door.

MOM Mom you are with the Angels now It was time to say goodbye, Yet still it’s hard to hide the pain, No matter how hard I try.
Though heaven and earth divide us, We are never far apart, For you are always in our thoughts, And forever in our hearts.
A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, It broke our hearts to see you go, God only takes the best.
From your son Joe, daughter-in-law Geraldine, granchildren Jordan & Dylan.
They say that memories are golden, Well maybe that is true, But we never wanted memories, We only wanted you,
We thought of you both with love today, But that is nothing new, We thought about you both yesterday, and the day’s before that too, We think of you in silence, We often speak your names, All we have are memories And your pictures in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part, God has you both in His keeping, We have you two in our hearts. From Your Loving Sister & the Whole Family
For you were such a special Mom, With lots of Love to share, And knowing you’re no longer here is very hard to bear. And though the grief will pass and time will heal the pain, Somehow life without you Mom, Will never be the same. Keane’s Kerry in pole position for league title | By Adam Moynihan
Victory over Donegal would clinch Division 1 for first time since 2017 NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1

Kerry will be crowned 2020 National League champions if they can overcome Donegal on Saturday and although bigger challenges lie ahead, you can be sure that David Clifford and co. will be keen to get their hands on the New Ireland Cup. Unfortunately, “and co.” will have to wait, regardless of what transpires on the field this weekend. In the event of a Kerry victory, the Kerry captain alone will be permitted to touch the trophy, as stipulated by a new COVID measure aimed at stamping out the celebratory scenes which unfortunately marred recent county finals around the country. “We plan to have presentations as per Tullamore yesterday (Sunday),” GAA director of communications Alan Milton told the Irish Examiner. “We will be reviewing how it worked but if it is possible we will keep the trophy in the presentation area after the county captain has received it in an effort to control celebratory photographs etc.”

Milton was referring to Sunday’s Division 2B hurling final between Antrim and Kerry after which victorious Antrim captain Conor McCann received the cup in the stand on his own. (Shortly after, the team did pose for a relatively reserved photograph with the trophy on the field.) But we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves here. There might not be any Kerry hands on the coveted silverware tomorrow afternoon. To make that happen The Kingdom need to account for a Donegal side who come into this fixture with a chance of finishing top of the pile themselves.
PERMUTATIONS
Galway’s shock defeat to Mayo in Round 6 has left the ball very much in Kerry’s court heading into the final set of fixtures. If Kerry win, they will be champions. If Donegal win, they’ll jump to first – for 24 hours at least. Galway face Dublin in Salthill on Sunday and if that match finishes as a draw and Donegal beat Kerry, Donegal will be champions.
SPORT
23.10.2020 However, if Donegal beat Kerry and there is a winner in the Galway-Dublin game, that winner will take the top spot. The other possible permutation is a draw in the Kerry-Donegal game. If this happens and Galway beat Dublin, Kerry will finish level with Galway on points but they will prevail on the head-to-head rule as they defeated Galway in Tralee in February. If Kerry draw and Dublin beat Galway, Kerry and Dublin will finish level on points and level on head-to-head after the sides played out a draw in their league opener in January. Scoring difference will then come into effect. Dublin currently lead the way (+8 versus +7) so naturally if Kerry draw and Dublin win, Kerry will be unable to overcome this deficit and Dublin will be named Division 1 champions. So there are plenty of ifs, buts and maybes, but Kerry’s goal is straightforward enough: win on Saturday and the title is theirs, and Sunday’s matches don’t enter into it.
LINE-UP
Peter Keane said he was open to experimentation in the build-up to the Monaghan game and while it may not have been a radically different team to the one we’re used to, there were one or two surprises in his first team selection post lockdown. It’s fair to say that Listry’s Ronan Buckley was an unexpected addition to the starting 15. The midfielder/half forward was drafted into the extended panel for 2020 at the end of last year and he captained Kerry against Cork in the McGrath Cup in December. That team was made up predominantly of U20s, however, (the 2019 senior squad were on holiday in Asia at the time) and he didn’t feature in the league in the springtime. He was exceptionally good for East Kerry in the County Championship, though, and those impressive performances clearly caught the eye of the Kerry manager, who handed Buckley his debut in Inniskeen. The new No. 12 held his own, linking the play well and showing glimpses of what he is capable of. His delightful assist for David Clifford’s second-half mark was perhaps the highlight of his performance, and he left the field late on after a job well done. That 12 spot has belonged to Stephen O’Brien in recent times but the Kenmare man did not travel to Ulster for Round 6 and his availability for Round 7 is not currently known. Competition is fierce in the Kerry forwards with or without O’Brien, but Buckley has certainly thrown his hat into the ring regardless. Dr Crokes forward Tony Brosnan was another relative newcomer in Kerry’s three-point victory. Now, Brosnan did, you will recall, get some game-time for Kerry pre-lockdown, but it is still very
59
much early days as far as his senior career is concerned so a lot of eyes were on him against Monaghan. Brosnan showed well and kicked three fine scores, while also attending to his defensive duties which frequently saw him popping up in his own half of the pitch. He will be hoping to retain his position for the Donegal game and the more time he gets on the field, the more he is likely to settle into his new role. Elsewhere Peter Crowley made his long-awaited return to county colours after recovering from a serious injury and he slotted in nicely at centre back. Crowley adds a degree of physicality and aggression that Kerry sometimes missed during his absence. Another solid performance this weekend and his rivals for that centre back berth will do well to displace him for the Munster semi-final.
BACKS
Unless Keane opts for one or two more experiments, you would expect his back seven to remain largely unaltered. His backs were quite good as they allowed 0-8 from play and coughed up just one real goal chance of note. Were it not for some spectacular kicking by Conor McManus, their defensive record would have looked even healthier. The half back pairing of Paul Murphy and Gavin White deserve special mention for their efforts the last day. Both were outstanding and both scored a point (as did both corner backs, incidentally). If Kerry are to sample success this year, one suspects that Murphy and White will be at the heart of it. David Moran and Diarmuid O’Connor soldiered away at midfield. O’Connor got through a nice bit of ball and his distribution was good. Again, both got their names on the scoresheet which is a plus. It remains to be seen what will happen when Jack Barry returns from his hand injury. Will he be able to displace Moran, or will Keane persevere with his old warrior for the championship? Joe O’Connor didn’t get a run against Monaghan – in fact, Tommy Walsh came on ahead of him at midfield – but the rookie will be encouraged by the fact that he made the 26. At half forward, experienced all-rounder Jonathan Lyne was the first substitute that Peter Keane called upon. Lyne was brilliant in Legion’s last game of the season (a defeat to Dr Crokes in the East Kerry Championship) and he is clearly a player whom Keane trusts. The 2014 All-Ireland-winner was unlucky not to score a goal against Monaghan; he probably wasn’t expecting David Clifford to square it back to him when Clifford also had the goal at his mercy, and his palmed effort was tipped onto the post by Rory Beggan. Still, the Legion man was energetic and comfortable in possession during

his 20+ minutes on the pitch. Paudie Clifford’s late introduction was a nice moment for his family and for Fossa but, more importantly, it also suggests that the East Kerry star is considered a viable option moving forward. He will be hoping to get some more minutes this weekend to show his manager and selectors what he can do. Paul Geaney and James O’Donoghue were not part of the panel against Monaghan; if they are available this time out, it becomes very difficult to narrow the forwards down to six, espe-
cially now that Ronan Buckley appears to be in the mix. The team will be named this evening at 8pm on the Kerry GAA website. As for the opposition, Donegal still have plenty to play for after their fine 2-17 to 2-13 victory over Tyrone. Michael Murphy (0-6, 5f), Jamie Brennan (1-2) and a Peadar Mogan wondergoal accounted for the bulk of their scoring and now that their Division 1 status is secure, they will be hoping to finish their league campaign on a high.

Games go ahead in Killarney Advertiser sports columnist Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews last weekend’s action and once again asks if intercounty GAA should really be taking place | By Eamonn Fitzgerald The lyrics of Christy Dignam, Aslan’s lead singer, leap out at us. “How can I protect you in this crazy world?” Those were his thoughts on peering into the cot of Keira, his only child, when she was just one day old. Presently, he is fighting his own daily personal battles with cancer, otherwise he could re-record the hit song, this time directed at the various sporting bodies that are presently continuing their activities, and are allowed to do so. I had hoped that these so-called elite sports games would not continue, as outlined in this column on Friday last. However, they did continue in several outdoor sports including the GAA, but not exclusively so. There was plenty of intercounty action in football and hurling with mixed luck for Kerry teams.
FOOTBALL
The Kerry senior football team had three points to spare away to Monaghan and
will meet Donegal in the final round of the league in Tralee tomorrow. All games go on behind closed doors and full restrictions are being strictly observed by players, management and officials. Much and all as I miss the inactivity in all the games, I still believe that it was inadvisable to allow the intercounty schedules to go ahead. Health considerations apart, it made no sense economically to see 40 cars leave the county on Friday last, all with single drivers. For some it was a 500km round trip journey. Travel expenses for all, as well as overnight hotel accommodation in single rooms and meals, is a whopping bill for the already
cash-strapped Kerry County Board. For some damage limitation they could at least have scheduled the games at neutral venues. A game in Thurles would not necessitate overnight expenses. Tomorrow Donegal will play Kerry in Tralee. Imagine the logistics of that itinerary, and lest we forget Donegal has one of the worst records of Covid infections. Fermanagh had to travel away to Clare without eight infected players and lost. Think of Wexford, Fermanagh and Leitrim. The GAA would not grant a postponement to the latter, so they had to forfeit their game.
INNISKEEN KEEPER
Inniskeen was the home place of Patrick Kavanagh, one of Ireland’s most famous poets (well-known to Leaving Cert students). He had a love/hate relationship with his home county: “You flung a ditch on my vision of beauty, love and truth.
O stony grey soil of Monaghan You burgled my bank of youth” His boyhood ambitions of becoming a football star were stolen from him on a hot day in Inniskeen. He wrote about his dreams of becoming a football star with his hometown club. He remembered the day that they were playing a neighbouring parish in a carnival football tournament. He had to settle for goalkeeper, because no one else would go in there. No pre-match limbering up or physio's rub-down in Inniskeen. Team tactics was delivered in a single sentence: “Tear into them lads, for the sake of the parish and in memory of Cúchulainn.”
ICE CREAM
Things went well for him as all the action was further up the field. He noticed a man selling ice cream from the back of a van in this wide open field. The temptation was too great to resist on a hot day, so he left the ‘bearna baol’ and purchased. On his way back to duty, savouring the unrefrigerated ice cream, he saw the opposition attack. Too late to get back. It pre-dated Paddy Cullen and Mikey Sheehy’s quick-thinking. Con Houlihan immortalised that in his favourite Evening Press column. Cullen was like the woman who was returning to her STRIKE: Shane Conway takes a shot at goal during the National Hurling League Division 2A final between Antrim and Kerry. this crazy world house and once she entered the yard she smelled the cake in the oven (open fire). Too late for Cullen and later for Kavanagh. The ball rolled into an empty goal and with it his boyhood dreams of ever making it as a football star with Inniskeen vanished. The two roads diverged... And he took the correct one, going on to become one of Ireland’s favourite poets. Kerry losses Unfortunately, the Kerry Under 20 football team came up short to Galway in their re-scheduled All Ireland semi-final at Limerick. They were well in contention, but the unavailability of 5 players due to Covid-19 restrictions, weakened John Sugrue’s hand. Kerry have done poorly in this grade for many years. This was the former U 21 grade. The full team was good enough to take on the Dubs in the All Ireland final. Look out for the progress of Ruairí Ó Beaglaioch. I picked him out some years ago at colleges level and he has progressed so well. Great to see a natural forward showing his class to follow in the scoring potentials of Gooch, David Clifford and Tony Brosnan. Hurling The Kerry senior hurlers were narrowly beaten in the Division 2A final, edged out by Antrim in a thrilling 2-23 to 2-20 encounter at Tullamore. Promotion to Division 1 was on offer for the winners. None of the players from Kilmoyley, the county champions, were available to the selectors. Why? All the management would say was that their unavailability was “not COVID-related”. If not, and I’m not doubting the answer of the management, why were they missing? Quite likely, it may have cost them the title. Michael Lenihan (Dr Crokes) was on this team and was also a member of the Kerry U20 team who were defeated by Cork in Tralee on Monday evening. It is heartening for local people who are promoting the game that Crokes players Michael Lenihan and Tom Doyle got the call up for the U20s. Michael’s father, John, has done sterling work over many years promoting hurling with Dr Crokes and they were rewarded recently when they beat Tralee Parnells in the Kerry Intermediate Championship final. This was a very young Kerry U20 team with a significant number of the squad just 18. Up to six of these garsúns will be expected to graduate through the U20s and on to the senior side in due course. The future for hurling in Kerry is bright enough.
PRECAUTIONS: Dara Moynihan and Seán O'Shea arrive at Páirc Grattan in Inniskeen wearing a snood/face covering prior to last weekend's National League match. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.
MINOR HURLERS
As expected, Kerry did lose to Tipperary (0-32 to 0-9). Timmy Hourican is a selector on the Kerry minor hurling team and Nathaniel Doncel and Charlie Keating were on the squad. All three are from Dr Crokes. Glenflesk’s Luke Crowley, who plays his club hurling with Rathmore, did well at midfield, and he will be still underage next year. A few months back, we said to look out for him as a star for the future. He is also a very accomplished football and basketball player. His grandfather Derry, better known as a footballer, won a Kerry SHC with Killarney in 1969. Other Kerry footballers on that winning team included Johnny Culloty, Tom Prendergast and Brendan Lynch. John, Luke’s father, was a powerful forward for Kerry in the not-too-distant past.
GOVERNMENT
The government announced new restrictions on Monday night with the country going to Level 5 lockdown for six weeks. The Kerry senior football team is scheduled play Donegal tomorrow in the last league game and then it is on to Páirc Uí Chaoimh one week later in the Munster Championship. That will be straight knock-out. I still say the GAA should pull the plug.
DREAMS: Famous Irish poet Séamus Heaney had dreams of playing football for his native Inniskeen but they didn't quite work out, says Eamonn Fitzgerald.

INNISKEEN
Monaghan and Kerry finally crossed swords in Inniskeen on Saturday last, 223 long days after they were initially scheduled to meet back in March of this godforsaken year. It would be a stretch to say that it was worth the wait (seven months in limbo was a tough enough ordeal for players and supporters alike) but for Kerry in particular, Day 1 of Project Restart was a good one. Now, more than ever, league results are well down the list of priorities. Health and safety are of paramount importance, and, in terms of football, preparing for the championship is still the primary goal. That being said, it’s always nice to win and that’s exactly what Kerry did – and in fairly impressive fashion at that.

ter a long lay-off, Ronan Buckley making his debut in place of Stephen O’Brien, and Dara Moynihan wearing 15 in the absence of Paul Geaney and James O’Donoghue. The signs were good early on as David Clifford kicked two nice scores and when Tony Brosnan finished off a great team move that involved Jason Foley, Buckley, Micheál Burns and Clifford, the visitors led by three points to nil with 10 minutes on the clock. Andrew Woods and Dessie Ward pointed for Monaghan either side of a lovely effort by Diarmuid O’Connor, and Kerry had the final say pre-water break when Seán O’Shea floated over an immaculate 45 to make it 0-5 to 0-2. Fintan Kelly (mark) and Micheál Branigan (free) cut the deficit to a single point by
the 25th minute but then an excellent five-minute period by The Kingdom saw them roar into the ascendency. Three marauding backs – Jason Foley, Gavin White and Paul Murphy – all found the target to open up a double-digit lead (0-8 to 0-4) and it could have been game over soon after when Brosnan found himself bearing down on an open goal after Monaghan keeper Rory Beggan had misjudged a fisted through ball. Brosnan, a gifted soccer player who lines out for Killarney Athletic when his schedule allows, reached the bouncing ball as it approached the endline near the left-hand post but his side-footed effort just cleared the crossbar from close range. The chance was perhaps a bit trickier than the television cameras suggested, but it was certainly one that the Dr Crokes man would like to have another go at. The point put Kerry five clear and although Kieran Hughes and Rory Beggan (free) struck for the hosts before the short whistle, another score by Clifford (free) left Kerry four to the good at the break (0-10 to 0-6).
point on the day. Improved as Monaghan may have been in attack, further scores by Brosnan and O’Shea at the other end in addition to two points by Kerry’s captain – the latter coming from a mark after a delightful long pass by Ronan Buckley – helped Kerry to open up a commanding sixpoint lead with five minutes of regulation remaining. Monaghan stuck to their task, however, and a flurry of late scores (they registered five of the final seven points) made the final few minutes a little nervier than they should have been for Kerry.

The opening stages of the second half were fairly uneventful. In fact, it took nine minutes for the scoreboard operator to be called into action. David Moran advanced from his midfield post to kick a fine score off his right, and Kerry led by five. Séamus McEnaney called on talismanic forward Conor McManus at half-time and the Clontibret man made a huge difference to Monaghan’s attack. He kicked five points in total (one looked fairly wide but they all count if the flag goes up); he and fellow substitute Christopher McGuiness (0-2) were the only Farney men to score more than one

Blues sign up to 20x20 charter Killarney Athletic pledge to promote club’s ever-growing girls section | By Adam Moynihan Killarney Athletic chairperson Gerardine Nagle has said that the club are “thrilled” to sign up to the 20x20 charter as the Blues continue to develop and nurture their young female players. The 20x20 initiative has made great strides in helping to encourage women to play sport while also tasking clubs, organisations and the media with promoting women’s games as much as possible Gerardine says that Athletic are very keen to push this particular side of the club, and that signing up to 20x20 was the natural next step. “We want to move forward with the girls and we want to be known for our girls teams,” she said. “It’s the fastest-growing group in the club; we have around 80 girls from U6 to U17. In fact, we had no choice but to cut off registration a few weeks ago because we just had too
many numbers. “We’re very girl-driven and we really, really want to promote the girls. We really do.” Ger says that the continued success of the girls teams wouldn’t be possible without the coaches. “We have fierce dedicated people there like Martin Crowley, Lara O’Brien and Diarmuid O’Carroll, as well as Luka and a couple of great girls as well. Colm Bowler has also come on board. “We have a plan for the girls. We don’t really want to throw them into competition straight away as a lot of them are quite young. We’ve had a few blitzes and challenges to get them used to it, and we were going to enter them into the cup this season – please God they’ll go ahead – just to give them a taste before moving on to the next step next season. “By signing up to 20x20, we have
pledged to publicise the girls teams as much as we can; to encourage as many girls to play soccer as we can; and to have as many matches and blitzes as we can. “As a club we are thrilled to sign up to 20x20. We consider ourselves to very much be a community-based club and, looking ahead to next season, we would love to see more girls taking up the game.”
SIGNIFICANT
Coach Martin Crowley says showing the girls that the club has committed to promote and look after them is of huge significance. “It’s massive. The girls see that they’re valued and that they’re very welcome. “My own daughter is nine now and she has great interest in soccer - that’s how I got involved myself. She started in the academy with the boys but to see her playing with all girls now, it’s huge for
her. I have three daughters and it’s important for me to see that there is a platform for them to play soccer if they’re interested. “You you can see that all the girls are comfortable coming down now. Before it was just viewed as a guys’ game and the girls just dropped out, which wasn’t fair. “That’s what the 20x20 initiative is all about: keeping women and girls in sport. How you do that is by having platforms to play, like organised leagues, and having the option to play for the next age group the following year. The aim is to have a production line coming through, which I think is fantastic. “As a coach, your goal would have to be a team at each age group, within a league. Start at your academy and you have U10s, U11s, U12s all the way up. If that happens, we will have done a good job.”

SPORTEXTRA Werner comes good for loyal fantasy managers Chelsea’s Timo Werner got his first and second goals of the season against Southampton last weekend, finally repaying the faith shown in him by loyal fantasy managers who stuck with the goal-shy striker since the start of the season. The German signed from RB Leipzig with a big reputation but he failed to find the target in his first four league matches. He broke his duck last weekend and added an assist for good measure to wind up with score of 16, the joint best tally of the round. Werner’s performance was not enough to secure the win for his side, however, as Southampton held the Blues to a 3-3 draw. Elsewhere, Harry Kane continued his
fine form for Tottenham with two more goals and another assist (16 points total) against West Ham, but Spurs were denied the victory by a late Manuel Lanzini equaliser. Marcus Rashford, who scored one goal and registered two assists in Manchester United’s impressive 4-1 win over Newcastle, was the next highest scorer on 15. In terms of defenders, Max Kilman of Wolves has scored 9 and 12 points in his last two matches, having not featured in any of the three previous fixtures this season. At just £4.1 million, Kilman could be an interesting option moving forward.

winless Burnley has led to many managers drafting Son or Kane if they haven’t already done so, while form players Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa) and Emi Martinez (Aston Villa) are also among this week’s top transfer targets. Meanwhile, The Scout has singled out Manchester City youngster Phil Foden (£6.6 million) as one to watch this time around. “A regular role for Manchester City has boosted the midfielder's attacking prospects in the early stages of 2020/21,” The Scout said. “Foden has started all four of his side's Premier League matches. He scored in their opening fixture at Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweek 2 and then provided the assist for Raheem Sterling's winner at home to Arsenal in Gameweek 5. “The 20-year-old has totalled 19 points, second only to the 27 of Sterling for Man City.” In the Killarney Advertiser League in association with Brian James, Brian Murphy leads the way on 396 points, 28 clear of Damian Clifford in second. Alan O’Brien (365) completes the top three.

F iries man on brink of world title
Firies engineer Richard Browne is on the brink of securing the FIA World Rallycross title with Johan Kristoffersson. The Swedish driver took a semi and final win at last weekend’s penultimate round in Spain. He now has a 27-point advantage over title rival Mattias Ekström – with a maximum of 30 available at each of the remaining two rounds – which are scheduled for Belgium on the weekend of November 21 and 22. Browne is an engineer with Volkswagen Motorsport in Germany and is the lead engineer on Kristoffersson’s Volkswagen Polo. “The pace on the final was also really impressive, and enough to take the win. Now we lead the championship by 27 points. A great effort by the whole team
because these double headers are gruelling,” said Browne. There are doubts that the final round can run but Browne and his team are prepared for the arrival of news that the event will not go ahead. “There are plenty of rumours that it won't run for us because of COVID-19 regulations,” he added. “We have been treating every round as the last one since Riga [Latvia], because we don't know when it will end.” Kristoffersson is chasing a record third world rallycross title having previously won the championship in 2017 and 18. He has also driven in the World Touring Car Series and the Norwegian Rally Championship with Browne as his engineer. Rival Timmy Hansen also has a mathematical chance of a second title, although he currently trails Kristoffersson by 56 points.

Muckross Rowing Club COVID-19: Last weekend, the club remained in operation for outdoor training in groups of no more than 15. Further to updated guidance from Rowing Ireland, the wearing of masks is now compulsory in and around the boathouse, for coxes of stern loaded boats and for coaches when not in a safety boat. At the time of writing, further public health restrictions are expected from government but are unknown. WORLD ROWING CONGRESS: World Rowing held its quadrennial Extraordinary congress via web conference last weekend, where the governing body formally dropped its former name FISA. As expected, the most significant change for the sport was the approval of a recommendation to the International Olympic Committee that coastal rowing events be included for the Olympics in Paris 2024. The international standard for coastal rowing, with two sculling oars per rower and a sliding seat, is known as offshore rowing in Ireland. This is to distinguish it from traditional Irish coastal rowing which mainly relates to fixed seat rowing using a single oar per rower. The additional events proposed for Paris include a Men’s Solo (1x), Womens Solo (1x) and Mixed Double (2x). The IOC Executive Board is due to confirm the programme for Paris 2024 at a meeting in December.
