Outdoor dining area officially opens in town

The new outdoor dining space at Kenmare Place was officially opened on Wednesday.

The project, which was supported with €605,000 in funding from Fáilte Ireland under the Local Authority Weatherproofing and Outdoor Dining Infrastructure Scheme, provides an attractive outdoor dining option for locals and visitors to Killarney.

“This is a really wonderful addition to Kil-

larney’s tourism infrastructure and will prove a great asset throughout the year and particularly during the forthcoming tourist season,” said Cllr Kelleher, Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, who did the honours.

"One of the effects of the recent pandemic was the need to utilise and maximise outdoor dining options and this in-

frastructure shows what can be achieved in an imaginative way. It will greatly enhance Killarney’s reputation as a destination for top quality tourism experiences.”

The project has been operational since last October but the official opening was

timed to coincide with the Meitheal 2023 tourism industry showcase that was organised by Fáilte Ireland at the INEC this week.

"Breda's death has numbed this community"

Killarney town came to a standstill yesterday (Thursday) to pay their respects to a lady who was muchloved in the community.

Breda Walshe (née Morrissey) from Lewis Road sadly died hours after suddenly becoming ill on Mother's day.

Breda, who was married to well known Legion man Enda Walshe, had spent a wonderful weekend with her family including celebrating her father-in-law Cathal Walshe as Grand Marshal in Friday's St Patrick's Day Parade.

Paramedics arrived to her home within eight minutes of her family finding her unconscious and after 50 minutes of treatment they managed to find a faint pulse. She was rushed to University Hospital Kerry however she sadly passed

away surrounded by her family in the early hours of the morning.

Hundreds attended O'Shea's Funeral Home on Wednesday evening and again St Mary's Cathedral yesterday for her Funeral Mass which was concelebrated by 12 priests and Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne.

Breda, daughter of Eddie and Kathleen, had five sisters and one brother. She worked in Macs, The Laurels and Murphys before moving on to the presbytery.

During her Funeral Mass, an emotional Fr

Kieran O'Brien said that Breda loved her job cooking for the priests over the last three years and how "life will be different without her".

"She made our house a home. Breda's death has numbed this community."

In tribute to his wife, Enda said that they spent a nice day together on Sunday.

"On Mother's Day we'd a lovely day."

Reading a verse from a Barry White song he said Breda "You're my first, my last, my everything".

Cathal described her as a wonderful and dedicated mother to her daughters; Rebecca who is studying in UCC, and Amy who is in her Leaving Cert year.

"She was the daughter I never had," Cathal told the Killarney Advertiser.

"We got on like a house on fire. She was a brilliant person and I never ever saw her in bad form. When June [his wife] passed away she was so strong for me.”

Cathal added that Breda made him feel “like the most important person in the world”, and that he enjoyed their Friday trips to do the shopping together.

“She had a sense of humour and a sense of style and she was known all over. She loved her job in the presbytery. She was

a human dynamo and treated everybody the same. I will never see anyone like her. I loved her to bits.”

Breda will be greatly missed by her husband Enda, her daughters Rebecca and Amy, her parents, father-in-law Cathal, and extended family and friends including her work colleagues.

Calls to limit Carrauntoohil access during extreme weather

Carrauntoohil and other popular mountaineering treks in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks should be deemed out of bounds during specific weather alerts.

That is according to Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill who raised his concerns at a recent Kerry County Council meeting. Earlier this month, 26 members of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) were tasked with helping several climbers off the mountain on a night of heavy snowfall.

The team was also busy over St Patrick’s weekend with three different call outs. At 10.15pm on Saturday Killarney Gardai contacted KMRT after three walkers got lost in the Zig-Zags descent of Carraun-

toohil; six members of the team shortroped the walkers to safety.

On Sunday members of the KMRT team helped two different people with broken ankles. At around 1pm they stretchered a woman off the Clonkeen side of The Paps. Later that day another woman

Great Southern Killarney partners with Kerry FC

Great Southern Killarney have been named as an official partner of Kerry FC.

The newly formed team will take part in their inaugural season in the SSE Airtricity First Division, which will see them play their home games in Mounthawk Park Tralee under manager, Billy Dennehy. "We are delighted to team up with Kerry FC as they start their exciting new venture in the League of Ireland." Managing Director Michael Jacobi said.

"Local partnerships are incredibly important to us, as they have been throughout the history of Great Southern, and it is fantastic to see Kerry soccer represented on the national stage. We wish Billy and the team the greatest of success in the season ahead!"

Great Southern Killarney are committed to a number of charities and organisations as part of their ongoing work in the local Killarney and overall Kerry region, including work with the Ring of Kerry Cycle and Kerry Cancer Support Group.

suffered the same fate while descending from Clara Mountain close to Millstreet.

Team members treated her injury and stretchered her to an awaiting ambulance at the roadside.

“Hiking and mountain climbing are enjoyed by many as a healthy outdoor

adventure and are fantastic experiences. However, like in anything there are inherent dangers, where injuries may be sustained or lives lost unfortunately.

Kerry Mountain Rescue are an amazing gathering of dedicated, highly trained individuals, who regularly put their lives on the line for people in danger on our mountains," he said.

"I believe that when severe weather alerts are in place by Met Éireann, places like Carrauntoohil should not be open to visitors who are putting, not alone their own lives in danger, but also the lives of our rescuers,” Councillor Cahill told the meeting.

"It is quite understandable that you could set out in good weather conditions and all of a sudden a major change could occur putting you and your friends in danger. But there are also people who set out knowing well that there are adverse conditions from Met Éireann warnings and yet they persevere with their trip, putting lives in danger.

"This is a form of negligence on their part and to ensure the maximum safety, we need to have a protocol in place, advising no access is allowed to these places, such as Carrauntoohil, during specific weather alerts.”

Killarney town twinned with Italy's Casperia

It has taken 10 years but the Italian town of Casperia is now an official twin town with Killarney.

The idea to twin the picturesque town near Rome was first mooted by the old Killarney Town Council.

However, when town councils were discontinued in 2014 the task was handed over to Killarney Town Twining Association and was supported by the elected Killarney Municipal District members of Kerry County Council.

“This was honouring a commitment made by the former town council to establish a twinning under European guidelines back in 2014,” said association chairman Sean Counihan.

“Unfortunately the town councils were abolished and Killarney Town Twinning Association pursued the matter.

“We are delighted that the municipal authority saw fit to move the beautiful town of Casperia near Rome from association status to full twinning with Killarney.

Also in photo are: Sean O'Keeffe (General Manager, Kerry FC), Sean Cooney (Group Marketing Manager) and Roisín O’Sullivan (Operations Manager, Great Southern Killarney).

A delegation from the association and the council visited Casperia in 2019 to sign the Italian side of the twining agreement. The pandemic further delayed the process but on Thursday last Killarney Mayor Niall Kelleher and Casperia Mayor Marco Cusso met to formally sign the charter in Killarney.

“We deeply appreciate the members' positivity in honouring the former Town Council’s decision.”

The signing between the two mayors took place over the St Patrick's Festival weekend when Killarney Town Twining Association also welcomed groups from other towns like Pleindfeld in Germany and Concord, North Carolina, USA.

T OWN TALK

40 Killarney Celtic players are excited for their upcoming trip to Italy in what will be a cultural exchange and a chance to make new friendships.

The players, aged 12-14, will visit the Italian Alpine province of Aosta Valley from April 4 to 9.

Accompanied by coaches and volunteer chaperones, they will travel to the town of Verrés in Northern Italy for what is hoped to be the first running of a programme the organisers have called Calcio - Culture - Cairdeas which translates to Football, Culture, Friendship. The programme, the brainchild of Killarney architect Davide Mosca who hails from the host town, features French classes each morning as the Aosta Valley is a bilingual region where Italian and French are spoken.

The club's U13 and U14 teams will train with their counterparts from local team PDHAE, before taking part in a tournament with the other clubs from the province which borders both France and Switzerland.

Celtic youngsters ready for Alpine adventure

The boys will visit one of the Aosta Valleys ski resorts and enjoy a final night celebration with medals, pizza and a DJ in the town's historical main square. The lads are especially looking forward to a trip to the city of Turin and in particular, the Serie A match between Torino and José Mourinho's AS Roma. The most important part of the trip is to create a cultural exchange with the Italian kids and make new friendships.

The organisers intend to reciprocate the visit of the kids from Verrés to Killarney next year and hopefully start a yearly trip experience for different age groups for boys and girls in the coming years, from Killarney's most progressive and inclusive club.

"We really hope that this will be more than just a tournament, but will be

the opportunity for the lads to enjoy a unique experience and hopefully to come back to this area in the future and make enduring international friendships," Davide Mosca said.

Paul Sherry, club Vice Chair paid tribute to local sponsors and fundraisers.

"We would like to thank all the people that helped us to organise this event which we believe will be a unique experience for the lads, especially all the sponsors, the club officers of Killarney Celtic, and all the parents that took part in fundraising activities since October."

Member of the organising committee and coach of the club's U14 teams, Brian Looney, paid a special thanks to the Mayor of Verres, Alessandro and all the host town officials and to Luca Laura e Pino from the Committee of the partner

club PDHAE for the support and partnership in organising accommodation and activities.

"Through Davide's Italian connections a real relationship has been developing between Killarney and Aosta. Groups of Killarney locals have enjoyed Verres' historical Carnevale festival over the last few years and now the relationship is moving to the next generation of Kerry and Valdostana youth. It will be an amazing trip for our young players. While a number of individuals have worked to bring this together - Davide and Linda Mosca have put huge effort into organising the trip and fundraising activities, and Philip O'Callaghan has done massive logistics and travel organisation and their work is appreciated by all at the club."

Nathan's buzzing as he's named Kerry's King Bee

A Killarney pupil is buzzing this week after winning the county Spelling Bee Final.

Nathan Ó Maolchatha, a pupil at Gaelscoil Faithleann, proved he's the best when it comes to spellings after he soared to the top following an intense competition in which he faced nine fellow spelling enthusiasts on Tuesday.

Nathan will now go on to compete in the Munster Provincial Spelling Bee which he

is very excited for. If successful there he will then go head-to-head in the All-Ireland Final Bee, taking place in June, with the lucky winner being crowned national King or Queen Bee.

500 schools nationwide are taking part with each holding their own in-house spelling bee competition to determine which pupil will be put forward to the county finals.

Muinteoir Lisa Ní Iarlaith organised the competition from Gaelscoil Faithleann and Nathan was selected three weeks

ago.

He represented his school in the county final in Cullina NS in Beaufort. On the day he received a medal, a book and a brightly coloured t-shirt.

"We are so proud of his wonderful achievement," Lisa told the Killarney Advertiser. "He will now be representing Kerry in the Munster final in May. Nathan's parents Erin and Mark and his sister Penny are so delighted for him. We wish him every success in the provincial final."

As well as the prestigious title of Eason Spelling Bee 2023 Champion, the top Bee will also take home a collection of books for their school library, worth €7,500 as well as a personal collection of books worth €500.

Ballyspillane staff open up mental health conversation

Community Centre will be asking next week as part of a new campaign.

It's all in partnership with Mental Health Ireland (MHI) and the centre will host an information/coffee morning on Thursday next (March 30) at 12.30pm at their centre and all are welcome to attend.

The campaign initiated by MHI identifies the need for positive engagement and connections with the people around us. It asks people to engage in open conversations about mental health and prompts us all to ask the question “How Are You?”

The word HELLO is a useful acronym to guide everyone through such conversations, H: Hello, E: Engage positively with the person, L: Listen actively, L: Learn about the person and O: seek options to assist the person if required.

Annual quiz helps to fund Easter pilgrimage

A popular annual table quiz, which raises funds to send Kerry children and young adults with special needs to Lourdes, will be held in Killarney next week.

The Tim Moore Memorial Table Quiz will be held in the Gleneagle Hotel at 7.30pm on Wednesday, March 29. The entry fee for tables of four is €40 and it is €20 for teams of four schoolchildren with great prizes up for grabs on the night.

All proceeds will go to the Irish Pilgrimage Trust which organises trips to Lourdes every Easter for children and young adults with additional needs. They will be brought on the pilgrimage on Easter Sunday and all the volunteer helpers and medical staff that will accompany them will cover for their own travel costs. The annual quiz, which is running for close on 30 years, is dedicated to the memory of the late Killarney accountant Tim Moore who was a tireless campaigner for the Irish Pilgrimage Trust. He passed away, suddenly, in 2002 and his friends have continued the quiz as a tribute to his legacy and to ensure the charity continues to be supported. It hasn’t been held for the past two years due to the pandemic but all involved are thrilled that it is back for 2023.

Kieran Coffey, the retired principal of Fossa National School, is one of those who spearheads the Kerry pilgrimage to Lourdes and he has appealed to the public to support the very important fundraiser which helps offset some of the costs involved.

“We are delighted to be in a position to continue Tim’s great work and to dedicate the quiz to him. The event is always so well supported by the people of the greater Killarney area and we greatly appreciate that generosity,” said Kieran.

We also see the positive impact that a caring person can have in such circumstances and this campaign that encourages positive engagement, regarding mental health is a great reminder to us all, the role we can play is assisting others who are struggling.”

Best Sustainable Practices award for The Tan Yard

It comes after the popular eatery at the Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa was awarded 'Best Sustainable Practices' in Kerry, at the Munster Regional Final of the Irish Restaurant Awards, following an overwhelming number of public votes.

The awards, which took place in the Limerick Strand Hotel, saw The Tan Yard compete against some of the best hospitality businesses in the county, to take home the prestigious award.

Holding sustainability at the core of its ethos, The Tan Yard and its team of dedicated staff take pride in ensuring only the finest quality, locally sourced ingredients are used in the restaurant and

Katie launches latest children's book

A children's therapist who is using her experience to reach out to young people through colourful stories, has just launched her latest book.

Katie O’Donoghue is a child and young people’s therapist with a background in Fine Art and Design. She has a master’s degree in Art Psychotherapy and a PhD in Healthy Psychology.

She excitedly launched 'The Little Otter Who Tried' on Thursday evening in Eason on Main Street.

Katie writes her books to attend to the challenges children face and to support the inner child in us all.

Little Otter is scared to swim on her own. But with tips from her riverside friends, she grows in confidence, and is soon surprised by how far she has travelled all by herself!

"Every child will find something to love in this gorgeous book," Katie, who also brought the stories to life with her own hand painted illustrations, explained. "It has been a whirlwind of a week, absolutely filled to the brim with memories to last a lifetime. I've been so supported by the community in Kerry. I'd like to say a special thanks to Tanya O'Shea and all the staff in Eason Killarney who ensured we had a wonderful launch evening. I'm really grateful for everyone's support and I hope any child gifted a copy of the book will find in Little Otter, a kind friend to help them with any challenges they may encounter."

Katie previously wrote and illustrated 'The Little Squirrel Who Worried' which was published by Gill Books in July 2021 and featured on The Late Late Toy Show.

The Little Otter Who Tried is priced at €13.99.

This dedication to sustainability has also seen The Tan Yard partner with Killarney Urban Farm, Ireland’s first Hydroponic Urban Farm and an initiative developed by the O’Donoghue Ring Collection. Using aeroponic technology and hydroponic towers, Killarney Urban Farm grows a range of micro-greens which are then used by bars, restaurants and hotels in the Kerry region, cutting out food miles and reducing the carbon footprint of their partners. Killarney Urban Farm is capable of producing high quality food in a compact, urban environment, making it a sustainable agricultural solution.

Local organisation to mark its 50th year

Kerry Parents and Friends Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year with a range of events across the county including at its Killarney headquarters.

Kerry Parents and Friends Association (KPFA) was established in 1973 as a support to families of people with an intel-

lectual disability. The Association, which has a service in The Old Monastery, Port Road, provides community based day, residential and support services for more than 250 adults countywide.

The 50th anniversary celebration will start with an event in Tralee tomorrow (Saturday) when KPFA officially opens its new service in Godfrey Place at 2pm.

The main celebration will take place on June 24 at its Port Road premises. This event is open to families of people the association has helped over the years, supporters, current and former staff members and anyone who wants to celebrate one of most significant charities in the county.

“It will be a fun day for everyone, with

food and drink stalls, cakes and crafts, and many more,” said Marie Linehan, Chief Executive, Kerry Parents and Friends Association.

“It is our way of saying thanks to the community for 50 years of support. We hope everyone will have a wonderful day.”

As well as celebrating its Jubilee, the June 24 event will also mark the official opening of a new sensory garden in its Port Road facility.

Kenmare author to launch new book in Killarney

A new book by Kenmare-based author David King will be launched in Eason Killarney on Saturday.

King’s first book is based on the true-life adventures of his mother Beryl in postWorld War Two America and Britain. ‘American Bombshell’ tells the story of the life and times of a woman who lived in London, New York and Florida during some of the most turbulent and exciting times in world history.

King has been living in Kenmare since shortly after Brexit in 2016. He always had ambitions to write a book on World War Two and when his mother passed away he was inspired to complete it.

“When my mother died, and as I cleared through her belongings, I began to recall some of the events of her life; her tough upbringing in an orphanage, her five or six marriages, and her meeting an American pilot during World War Two,” he said.

“The book took about a year to write, but I struggled to get a publisher with the early drafts. I left it for a few months, revised the manuscript one

Kilcummin National School Parents Association (PA) are holding a family quiz which will be their first substantial outing since before COVID curtailed such activities.

A social night of fun and entertainment is promised, with a surprise guest on the night!

As well as the opportunity to be crowned champions on the night, the winners of the table quiz will also bag €100 for their night's endeavour.

Alongside the table quiz the PA are also running a fantastic raffle on the night with some spectacular prizes on offer.

“Much appreciation to all our wonderful

local sponsors for their kind support. Highlight of the raffle is a Kerry jersey and football signed by the Kerry team, but we also have an array of vouchers, hampers and lots more,”Joanne O'Sullivan, Chairperson for the Kilcummin Parents Association, said.

Everyone is welcome to attend and participate on the night so why not come and join us for a fun filled night with the ultimate Quiz Master himself, Cathal Walshe.

The quiz will be held in the Klub Bar at the Kilcummin GAA grounds on Thursday, March 30 with proceedings beginning at 7pm.

The funds raised from this event will go to support activities and facilities for the children of Kilcummin NS.

There was plenty of excitement, colour and fun in Killarney town on Friday for this year's St Patrick's Day parade.

St Patrick's parade in Ballyspillane

Children living in Ballyspillane got a chance to partake in their own parade on Thursday last.

The private pre-St Patrick’s Day parade came by invitation only for the lucky residents living in the square area of the Ballyspillane Community Centre.

A sea of green, white and gold and the melodious voices of 18 preschoolers and their teachers was a very special treat for the residents who enjoyed a unique version of ‘Irelands Call’ and ‘Molly Malone’ as they passed by dressed in their vibrant artwork which each child created earlier in the week.

“[It was] a busy week of artwork in Ballyspillane as the children prepared for mothers day also,” their teacher Karen Foley said.

Well known as one of The Three O’s and with the Musical Society, newly appointed manager of the centre Derek O’Leary said he was very pleased with the children’s level of creativity in the preschool and was waiting with applause on their return.

Preschoolers at Ballyspillane Community Centre celebrated St Patrick's Day with a display of their unique artwork and their very own St Patrick's Day Parade on Thursday around the centre for the neighbours close by. International Lions Club visits Killarney

A party of almost one hundred board members from throughout the world, led by International President Brian Sheehan, spent three days in town following a Board meeting in Belfast.

Lions is the largest service club organisation in the world with 1.4 million volunteers serving communities in 200 countries and territories.

The highlights of their visit were a tour of the sensory room in the Monastery School, tree planting in Maurice O’Donoghue Memorial Park with Transition Year students from Killarney’s secondary schools, and a basketball training session with athletes from Kerry Stars Special Olympics. Their trip culminated

in a reception hosted by Killarney Lions Club at Killarney Racecourse where they were welcomed by the Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher.

“This is a huge honour for the local Lions Club in Killarney,” said Denis Doolan, President of Killarney Lions Club.

“We do our best to provide support where it’s needed in our community, so it was great to be able to show the International Board some of the work we have done with organisations like Kerry Stars and local schools.”

To commemorate the trip, Lions Club International and Killarney Lions Club made donations to help complete the sensory room at the Monastery school and provide further support for Kerry Stars activities.

If you fancy hiking and biking through Killarney National Park then their Hike & Bike Killarney on June 3 might be for you. Since the air ambulance was offered State funding in February, the team behind the charity are now concentrating on raising funds for their group of on-theground volunteer emergency medical responders.

It is one of three different events taking place in National Parks all over the country over the coming months. Participants will be asked to raise €500 to get an entry into the event. “These events will be fully supported with bike mechanics, mountain safety

and medical assistance throughout. You can opt to join any or all the events. This event is suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness who are prepared to train in advance of the event. This allows you to enjoy the event, challenge yourself and raise vital funds,” said an event spokesperson.

“The Bike & Hike Challenge is an excellent opportunity to get active, enjoy the beauty of Ireland, and help expand our network of ground volunteer emergency medical responders across the country. We are committed to providing safe, effective, and timely emergency pre-hospital care to those seriously ill or injured in Ireland.”

The Killarney event will start and finish near the brewery on Muckross Road. Registrations can be made via bikeandhike.criticalcharity.ie/register.

Killarney to feature on TG4’s show

A song about Killarney - once made famous by local Country Music hero Dermot Moriarty - will feature on TG4 next Tuesday.

The second series of the Irish channel’s County Music show ‘Viva Ceol Tire’, which highlights emerging Country Music talent in Ireland, airs every Tuesday night.

The next programme will feature Donegal singer David James' version of ‘Oh Killarney’.

The programme was filmed entirely on location in Killarney including Torc Wa-

terfall, Ladies View Moll’s Gap and Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

“The song was written by Dennis Allen. However, it was a hit for Dermot Moriarty in the 1980s. The first time I heard it I loved it and I was thrilled with the reaction my version has got,” James, who is from the small village of Killean in Done-

gal, told the Killarney Advertiser.

“It’s pretty rural but I love it. I’ll be in Country Music 10 years this May. My first gig was in the local GAA hall for my aunt’s 50th birthday. I was 14 and I’ve been at it ever since.”

Tune in to 'Viva Ceol Tire' at 9.30pm on Tuesday next (March 28).

Strong connections made at tourism tradeshow

Held in the INEC, 450 Irish businesses pitched to over 230 international buyers from 17 countries at Fáilte Ireland’s flagship trade event.

Their return to the stage was timed to coincide with the St Patrick’s weekend celebration and also marked the first big event at the Castlerosse Park Resort

since it re-opened on Thursday night following its winter break.

As well as a feat of Irish music, dance and poetry, Fossa-based Ukrainians gave performances in their native language too.

“What a great night we had at our CCÉ Rambling House last Saturday night,” Chairman Tim Kissane said.

“There are so many people to thank that

we apologise in advance if we miss anybody out. Firstly, to the management and staff Castlerosse Park Resort for hosting our event and the wonderful service they provided.

“To our very talented stalwart musicians Mike Jack, Noreen and Maura who entertained us all so well from start to finish.

“To all our guest performers, from The

Speaking about the importance of developing a future pipeline of tourism business, Paul Kelly, CEO of Fáilte Ireland, said that "creating a strong pipeline of future business is key for the recovery of tourism".

"Seeing the demand for the Irish tourism product with international buyers at Meitheal is fantastic. Each international buyer represents tens of thousands of possible visitors to Ireland, and their business will be hugely important for tourism and hospitality businesses, communities, and destination Ireland as we continue to work towards recovery," he said.

Last year Tricel launched its first annual bursary award programme which is designed to identify talented students and provide support and motivation to reach their full academic and professional abilities.

In its inaugural year, as a pilot scheme, the award focused on employee’s chil-

This year it is envisaged that access to the bursary awards will extend to all employee’s children across the group.

Colin is a Second Year student at MTU, Kerry. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Accounting.

Colin has been working as a general operative with Tricel during school breaks and weekends.

Ireland is the 14th happiest country in the world

Finland has been named the 'World’s Happiest Country' for the sixth year in a row.

That's according to World Happiness Report compiled by the United Nations which also ranked Ireland as the 14th happiest country in the world. The report, which was published on Monday – International Day of Happiness – is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Marks are given for healthy life expec-

tancy, GDP per capita, social support, low corruption and generosity in a community where people look after each other.

Finland’s Nordic neighbours, Denmark and Iceland are the second and third happiest countries in the world. Ninth last year, Israel is now in fourth place.

The Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and New Zealand round out the top 10.

Ireland sits at 14 in the table behind

Austria, Australia and Canada but ahead of the United States, Germany and Belgium.

Our closest neighbour Britain is 19th ahead of the top-20 newcomer Lithuania but behind the Czech Republic. Both Ukraine and Russia, as a result of the war, have slid significantly down the list, with the former now ranked 70 and the latter rated 92 in the list. Afghanistan and Lebanon are last and second last respectively in the 137-strong list.

Water way to run!

A woman is so keen to do her bit to help the environment that she now plans to run the London Marathondressed as a water bottle!

Nikki Hawkes (28) from Somerset in the UK began the unusual task of running in the attire back in September 2021 by transforming a 10-year-old vodka bottle costume she owned.

She began running daily wearing the unusual attire and has had a good reaction. Nikki, who first got into running when she was a student at the University of Southampton, is now looking for a bigger audience.

“It feels like I’m getting the important message across while being funny and not being all doom and gloom,” Nikki said.

“I wanted to find a way of making a point whilst it being kind of fun, somewhat funny, and to grab attention and get people talking about the topic of plastic pollution. It turns out it’s a very hot costume, so I feel like I get the message across in a funny way.”

Combining her love of fancy dress and saving the planet is what she says she loved the most.

Irish names in New York photo exhibition

A Dublin photographer and filmmaker had an unusual exhibition to mark St Patrick’s Day in New York.

Ross O’Callaghan showcased 50 photographs of Irish men called Paddy, Pat and Patrick, Padraig and Padraic as a part of the exhibition, which ran until Wednesday of this week (March 22).

It took place at two different locations, the Lume Studios, Tribeca and in front of Grand Central Station.

The idea for the project was formed when O’Callaghan met award-winning architect Paddy Bradley in 2013 during filming for Channel 4’s Grand Designs,

which Bradley later went on to win. “That’s not a typical Paddy,” thought O’Callaghan.

His idea kept forming and on St Patrick’s Day 2021, he and his partners Roisin Keown and Peter Snodden at the Brill Building creative agency launched a campaign. They issued a call-out for men named Paddy, Pat, Padraig, Patrick etc to get in touch. Their aim was to showcase the diversity of the contemporary Irish male and challenge the global stereotype of the ‘Irish Paddy’ through a collection of portraits. Now, more than 500 applicants later, the Paddy Irishman team has finally opened its exhibitions in New York.

“The series comprises a cross-section of Irish men and promotes a narrative of contemporary Ireland. It challenges the idea that there’s any such thing as ‘a typical Paddy’ and questions assumptions around what it means to be Irish and male. The invite for the project came from the New York City Department of Transport and the Grand Central Partnership," said O’Callaghan.

Among the Paddies featured are comedian and TV personality, Patrick Kielty; golfer Padraig Harrington; Olympic boxer Paddy Barnes and Birmingham Six survivor Paddy Hill.

London’s calling for Irish master gardener

An Irish master gardener, favoured by King Charles, is getting ready for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show with the “most ambitious plan to date”.

Billy Alexander of Kells Bay Gardens in Cahersiveen is making his award-winning rare collection of Kells Bay ferns a central feature at the prestigious flower show from May 22 - 27 in Chelsea, London. Building on his 2021 success, where Alexander was awarded gold medals at both the RHS Chelsea Flower show and the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Show, Billy’s ambition is to secure another gold medal this year.

Fair City couple support Alzheimer’s Tea Day

They are the face of popular Irish soap Fair City - but now real-life couple Bryan Murray and Una Crawford O’Brien are calling on the public for support.

They say the most powerful cup of tea of the year will take place on Thursday, May 4 as it will help raise awareness and vital funding for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI).

Bryan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease three years ago. Bryan and Una are now asking everyone to get involved with local Tea Day events in their homes, gardens, workplaces, schools, local community centres or somewhere special.

In August 2022, Bryan and Una first spoke publicly about his diagnosis in hopes of helping others impacted by the condition.

Bryan is a member of The ASI’s Irish Dementia Working Group, a group of people living with dementia who advocate for better services, supports and policies in Ireland.

“I was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s three years ago," Bryan said.

"That’s why my partner Una and I are proud and excited to join The Alzheimer Society of Ireland as Tea Day ambassadors - and we really hope you’ll get the kettle on too and host your very own Tea Day party on Thursday, May 4! Did you know at least 30 people develop dementia every day? It’s a frightening statistic and one I wasn’t aware of until I was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Thousands of families across Ireland are affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia - it cannot be understated how much they rely on supports like day care centres, home care, dementia advisers and training for family carers; supports Tea Day helps to provide.

Alzheimer’s Tea Day returned last year after taking place online in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. Traditional Tea Day events in the past have raised €500,000. The ASI hopes to continue rebuilding Tea Day and, this year, raise €300,000.

Free primary school books

Over half a million primary school pupils will be able to avail of free school books from next September.

Minister for Education Norma Foley TD this week announced details of a groundbreaking new scheme which provides free schoolbooks in national and special schools. This scheme will also provide workbooks and copybooks easing the financial burden facing families during back-to-school-time.

The investment of over €50 million

significantly increases the funding for schoolbooks currently provided to all recognised primary schools in the country. This scheme will ensure that parents and guardians will not be asked to buy or rent any schoolbooks, workbooks or copy books as of autumn 2023.

“I am delighted to announce details of the funding package of over €50 million secured in Budget 2023 for the landmark new scheme to provide free schoolbooks in all primary schools and special schools,” Minister Foley said.

Design inspiration once more comes from the local environment, and the exhibition will simulate a Kerry bog, and along

with a myriad of fern varieties, native sphagnum moss will feature amidst small peaty bog pools. Offsetting this, will be large ancient rocks typical of the Iveragh peninsula landscape in Kerry.

Demonstrating the respect which organisers have for the Kerry-based gardener, Kells Bay ferns will be positioned in a central area in the Great Pavilion and the exhibition will feature in a preview of the show on BBC 1’s Gardener’s World.

“Without a doubt, the 2023 collection will be our most ambitious plan to date," Billy said.

"I intend to increase fern numbers, the range of sizes and include a greater variety of species - it will be a real visual delight!"

Arrest warrant issued for Vladimir Putin

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has ordered the arrest of Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.

The ICC has also issued the same for the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Office of the President of the Russian Federation, Maria Lvova-Belova.

The ICC alleges that Putin and Belova have committed crimes by unlawfully deporting and transferring Ukrainian children from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation. There they were offered up for adoption after Putin changed Russian laws to accommodate such a move.

“Incidents identified by my office include the deportation of at least hun-

dreds of children taken from orphanages and children’s care homes.

"Many of these children, we allege, have since been given up for adoption in the Russian Federation. The law was changed in the Russian Federation, through Presidential decrees issued by President Putin, to expedite the conferral of Russian citizenship, making it easier for them to be adopted by Russian families,” said ICC Prosecutor Karim A. A. Khan.

“My office alleges that these acts, amongst others, demonstrate an intention to permanently remove these children from their own country. At the time of these deportations, the Ukrainian children were protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

Luciano now running Iguana Cafe at racecourse

Luciano Oliveira came to Killarney to learn English but five years on he has well and truly embedded himself into the community.

Moving here has been life-changing to say the least as he is now a well-known face at Killarney Racecourse after taking over the running of Nave Cafe which he has since renamed Iguana Cafe.

"I came here to learn English," Luciano told the Killarney Advertiser. "Even though I couldn't speak English, people were very patient. The plan was to stay two years and then travel to Australia and New Zealand."

The Brazilian met his Polish wife Barbara, a GP, set up home in Firies and the couple have since had two children. He previously worked in Nave Cafe for Adrian and Elaine and was looking to set up his own coffee business when he heard they were looking for a change in

"The transition was very smooth," Luciano, who employs eight staff part-time, said.

He added that he has been warmly received since taking over the cafe.

"We're very busy. We get good passing trade from the new footpath linked with Muckross. People come here also as we have a free car park which is very large."

And he has a love of Killarney too especially, he says, the scenery outside the window of the cafe which looks out onto the racecourse and the mountains.

Iguana is open seven days a week to the public from 8am to 5pm serving tea, coffee, iced-drinks, soup and toasted sandwiches and offers vegan and gluten free options.

Five questions to ask before buying stock

When it comes to investing, nothing is certain.

There are no perfect stocks to buy because there's no way of predicting the future with 100% accuracy.

The truth is, investing is hard, and building a portfolio of top stocks that beat the market is something that even financial professionals have trouble doing consistently.

For most people, investing in index funds is the perfect hands-off approach, providing broad exposure to the stock market at a very low fee. Even my own personal portfolio is made up of roughly 70% ETFs despite the fact I invest in the market for a living.

But I believe some stock picking is a good strategy for many hands-on people.

Taking a small portion of your overall portfolio and diligently selecting a small number of companies to invest in gives you an opportunity to learn about the in-

vesting process and fully understand the businesses you are investing in, which helps to build conviction in your positions.

From a psychological standpoint "collector's instinct" kicks in, enabling people to participate and invest more money over time.

Lastly, for Irish investors, there are tax benefits to consider. If you invest in individual stocks, you are taxed at the CGT rate of 33%, and the first €1,270 of your gains are exempt from CGT each year. When investing in index funds or ETFs, you are taxed at the exit tax rate of 41% with no annual exemption.

For those interested in picking individual stocks, here are five questions you should ask yourself before investing in any company.

Do I understand the business?

Too many people invest in businesses they don't understand because it 'sounds good'. If you have no idea how the com-

pany works, you won't have the conviction needed to hold onto the stock when an inevitable downturn comes.

Can the balance sheet withstand severe, temporary adversity?

This seems obvious, but so many people invest in companies without understanding how much money a company holds and who they owe money to. Economic cycles are guaranteed. You must ensure that the company has enough cash-onhand to avoid becoming obsolete when activity slows.

Will the company benefit from longterm trends?

Make sure the company will remain relevant into the future. If the stock is cheap now, it may be cheap for a reason.

Is the company enjoying profitable growth?

Not growth at all costs, but a combination of sustainable growth and value. All this information can be found online at sites

30,000km journey for rally

Two Killarney competitors will have clocked up more than 30,000km between them to get home in time to contest three local rallies.

Gneeveguilla’s Billy McCarthy travelled from Brisbane, Australia to contest last weekend’s West Cork Rally – 16,923km.

Amy Burke, originally from Milltown, flew home from Perth in Western Australia, a slightly shorter distance of 15,076 km. The Circuit of Kerry (April 2) and the Rally of Lakes (April 29 and 30) come in quick succession. Both drivers are staying in Kerry until after the Rally of the Lakes.

With the official entry list for the Circuit of Kerry set to be published on Sunday night, both are hoping they will receive a place in the 150-strong list. “We don’t have many good rallies in

Western Australia," said Burke, who was taking part in her third-ever rally in Clonakilty.

“There was nothing for it only pack the bags and come home for a few weeks.”

The Milltown native works as an excavator driver in the mines of Western Australia.

She drove a Ford Fiesta in Cork over the weekend but retired on Saturday when the clutch failed. The car is now in the care of Pat Looney Motors in Killarney where the offending part will be upgraded before the Tralee-based Circuit of Kerry in just over a week’s time.

Billy drove a Nissan Micra in the West Cork Rally. He and co-driver John Falvey won Class 9 and they are also hoping to get runs in both the Circuit of Kerry and the Rally of the Lakes.

A love of literacy at Loughquittane NS

Literacy was brought to life in Loughquittane NS for World Book Day recently as children dressed up in their favourite characters. They had a fantastic day bringing their favourite literary characters to life and it really helped foster a spirit of read-

ing within the school," teacher John O'Donoghue said.

"Classes spent the day both reading, and equally as importantly, listening to stories being read aloud. It is one of our favourite days of the school calendar and we can't wait for next year already!"

BOOK WORMS: Children from Loughquittane NS enjoyed World Book Day recently.

DOWN TO THE WIRE

Kerry, Galway, Tyrone and Roscommon all vying for league final

Jack O’Connor has emphasised on more than one occasion that Kerry don’t need to reach the league final this year but the way the chips are falling they could end up there regardless.

In a normal campaign, six points would just be enough to avoid the drop. This time around, three teams on six – Kerry, Tyrone and Roscommon – are still in with a real shout of a top two finish and a league final against Mayo. It’s a strange turn of events for sure, and one that becomes even stranger when you realise that none of those three teams are mathematically safe from relegation.

The final round is permeating with permutations so let’s try to break it down as best we can.

If Galway win or draw against Kerry, they will advance to the league final. (The Galway-Kerry match will be shown live on Tg4, by the way.)

If Kerry beat Galway, they will go level with the Connacht side on eight points

and slip ahead on head-to-head. However, if they are joined on eight by another team or teams then head-tohead goes out the window and points difference will be used to separate them. This is where Tyrone and Roscommon come into play. If Tyrone beat relegation candidates Armagh, and/or Roscommon beat lowly Donegal, they will move up to joint second with Galway and Kerry. Galway (+10 points difference) hold the advantage here, although a Kerry win will naturally close the gap. The Kingdom are currently on +4 so a winning margin of three points will bring both teams to +7. When teams are level on points difference, ‘points for’ is the next deciding factor and Kerry lead Galway in this category (92 v 77). So, in short, if Kerry win by three (or more) points they are guaranteed to overtake Galway. But hold on, they’re not home and hosed yet. They can still be caught by Tyrone or Roscommon. If Tyrone beat Armagh by six, they will also move to eight points

and a points difference of +7. Tyrone have outscored Kerry thus far (95 v 92) so if they maintain that advantage, and Kerry win by three, a six-point win would do them.

Roscommon, meanwhile, would probably need to win by seven points if Kerry win by three as they trail Kerry in the ‘points for’ category (92 v 84).

It’s complicated but, in short, a threepoint victory for Kerry over Galway would leave them in a pretty good spot.

A one-point win or a two-point win will suffice if the games involving Tyrone and Roscommon are also tight.

At the other end, Donegal are effectively relegated already barring a miracle of unprecedented proportions and they will more than likely be joined by one of Monaghan or Armagh.

There is still a miniscule chance that Kerry can get relegated. If they lose to Galway, and Monaghan beat Mayo, and Armagh win or draw, and at least one other team apart from Kerry and Monaghan

also finish on 6, Kerry’s fate will be decided by points difference. However, they hold a strong advantage here (Kerry +4, Monaghan -16) so demotion is unlikely in the extreme.

Jack must patch the holes in Kerry’s winning garment

I was at Austin Stack Park on Saturday night for a must-win game for Kerry.

I must say Amhrán na bFhiann was sung so well by Karen Trench. The Kerry team was positioned too far away from my viewing point, but I hoped the players sang the Irish national anthem to power the adrenaline for the contest with Roscommon. The spirit was evident early on and none more so than in the 6th minute when captain David Clifford crashed an unstoppable low shot into the Roscommon net. Great credit must also be given to Tony Brosnan who sent a sublime 30-yard foot pass into the arms of the Kerry captain. Raise the green flag. It is a pity that we do not see more of this direct football from Kerry, instead of being just the same as so many teams, overpassing by hand and retain-

ing possession at all costs. This makes for a hard watch.

The goal was magnificent, and the Kerry manager Jack O’Connor was wholesome in his praise of Brosnan’s contribution. “I thought Tony was very exciting tonight. Tony has a pile of talent, he just needs to keep working on belief and confidence, he’s a great talent. That display tonight will have done him a lot of good. I’ve been watching Tony since he was underage, and he’s been a real talent going back to his minor days. We’re delighted with the way he played tonight.”

Why, are you playing him so far outfield, I ask, rather in the corner, where he is a proven scorer? “We’ve heard plenty of noise about him playing outside, but you can’t play with a flat three inside anymore. There is nobody playing with three inside. We’re not going to put David Clifford out, so somebody has to come out of the corner. Tony can play it both ways.”

Overall, the Kerry display was poor, too much of the lateral game, passing hither and thither across the field instead of the direct fast ball into a full forward line of proven scorers.

Okay, Jack will be happy with this winning result, but this type of play will not succeed in retaining the Sam Maguire. Gavin White, Paul Geaney and Diarmuid O’Connor are back after long-term injuries, but are short on game time. Stephen O’Brien has yet to join the panel. Stefan Okunbor and Darragh Roche picked up what are reported to be “serious” injuries against Tyrone and Joe O’Connor has yet to return after his long-term injury.

“Patchy in places” is how the Kerry boss described last Saturday’s game. Too many patches, Jack, which will grow into gaping holes unless corrective action is taken. The test is if he can patch up the holes in last year’s winning garment.

Not the way they played versus Ro-

scommon, is my viewpoint. The present midfield pairing of Barry Dan O’Sullivan and Jack Barry is getting by as barely adequate but need a big injection of support to match the Northern teams, Galway and Mayo from Connacht, and Dublin, of course. Cork lost away to Louth but they were down to 14 men in the second half. They will do better in the championship.

Meanwhile, the Kerry hurlers got the rub of the green to make up for their previous one-point loss to Offaly at the Fitzgerald Stadium a few weeks ago. They can thank Shane Conway once more for topping the scoring in this 1-20 to 1-19 win over Down. He got nine points in all (six frees, two from play and a 65).

Best of luck to Kerry in the playoff stage and hopefully they can reverse those three tough losses in the Joe McDonagh Cup final.

Ghaxa header not enough as Kerry FC still await first win

After that heavy defeat to Galway, Kerry FC needed a swift recovery away to Wexford on Friday last. Unfortunately, they got off to a poor start, conceding a goal after four minutes. Indeed, only for great goalkeeping by Wayne Guthrie it could have been much worse in that first half.

In the second half claims for a Kerry penalty for handball in the box were ignored by the referee and then Wexford FC went 2-0 up. When queried about that incident at Monday’s press briefing, Kerry manager Billy Dennehy said that “video evidence showed it was a handball.” However, the referee saw it differently. That is a common thread, complaining

New Ireland shirt fails to impress fans

The new Ireland soccer shirt was launched this week ahead of the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers and the Women’s World Cup but if the reaction online is anything to go by, you won’t be seeing too many of them in the wild.

In 2022 the FAI terminated its kit deal with JACC Sports Distributors, the Irish company who had supplied the Irish teams with Umbro and New Balance gear since 1994.

The news that the FAI would be replacing Umbro with relative newcomers Castore on a five-year deal did not go down well with fans, many of whom were hoping that a major player like adidas or Nike, or Irish brand O’Neills, would come on board.

Castore, an English company who provide kits to Aston Villa, Wolves, Newcastle and Rangers, have rose to prominence in a short spell of time, but supporters of the aforementioned clubs have voiced concerns about the quality of the mer-

chandise. One Wolves fan received his jersey with an upside-down crest and similar errors have been spotted on players’ on-field apparel.

On Monday, the FAI, who recently unveiled a new crest and also rebranded their teams as ‘Ireland Football’, released the new Ireland home shirt on pre-order. The response online was overwhelmingly negative. At one point, out of around 225 replies to the kit launch tweet, this reporter counted only a handful of positive comments. The vast majority were critical of the design.

The men’s shirt currently does not have a sponsor’s logo on the chest but the FAI are set to announce their new main sponsor in the coming weeks. The women’s team will continue to be sponsored by Sky.

about referees’ decisions in most sports.

Leo Gaxha – that man again- lifted the Kerry spirits by heading home from a Ryan Kelliher cross. That pleased the Kerry boss because Lissivigeen man Kelliher came up through the ranks with Killarney Celtic and is staking a valid case for more match time, maybe even a starting berth in some future games. Kerry tried hard for the equaliser but in the end they fell to a narrow defeat. Maybe that first win will come in front of the home crowd tonight at Mounthawk Park. It won’t be easy, though. Athlone are a seasoned team who have chalked up two wins and a draw in their five games to date.

Kerry need to avoid goals from set pieces and up front they need to convert more of the goal chances that are being created. Best of luck to Kerry FC tonight.

AROUND THE WORLD

| Nadal exits top 10 for first time in 18 years

Tennis legend Rafael Nadal has exited the top 10 of the ATP World Rankings for the first time since 2005.

The Spaniard is recovering from a hip injury and has not played competitively since the Australian Open. Missing a recent tournament means he has fallen to world No. 13.

| College football player makes comeback after shooting

University of Virginia running back Mike Hollins has made a remarkable return to the practice field, four months after he survived a shooting that killed three of his teammates.

“It’s literally a miracle that I’m here today and just living that out,” Hollins told reporters.

“I just feel really blessed to be back and to be able to continue my dreams, my former teammates’ dreams. A lot of blessings in some tough times that are hard to see, but I try to continue to move forward.”

Hollins was one of two people wounded when a fellow student opened fire on a bus returning to Charlottesville, Virginia, from a class field trip, killing Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr and D’Sean Perry.

Nadal, a 22-time grand slam champion, had been in the top 10 for a record-breaking spell of 912 weeks. He is currently eyeing a return in time for the clay court season. If he regains his fitness, the 36-year-old will fancy his chances at the French Open which begins on May 28.

| Camogie All-Star trip cancelled due to backlash

The planned PWC Camogie All-Star Tour of Canada has been cancelled. The timing of the proposed trip had been widely criticised by players who were bewildered that it was due to take place just one week before the start of the championship.

Seven Cork players announced that they would be boycotting the tour and a number of counterparts from Kilkenny, Waterford and Galway followed their lead.

This led to showdown talks involving the relevant parties, and the decision was ultimately made to cancel the tour.

It

the National Basketball Arena in Dublin last weekend as they just came up short in their bid to reach the Super League.

James Fleming’s side beat the Phoenix Rockets 85-84 in Saturday’s National League Division 1 semi-final thanks to Yuleska Ramirez Tejeda’s winner, a victory that set-up a showdown with the Portlaoise Panthers on Sunday. With Rheanne O’Shea, Síofra O’Shea and the excellent Lorraine Scanlon to the fore, Paul’s raced into a significant firsthalf lead and when they still led in the third quarter, their Super League dream came firmly into view. However, the Panthers, to their great credit, never stopped fighting and they staged an impressive comeback to

power ahead when it mattered most. The team from the midlands eventually prevailed on a 70-62 scoreline as the Killarney girls were left to rue what might have been.

Next up for Paul’s is a League Cup semi-final against the winners of Saturday’s game between the Phoenix Rockets and the Limerick Celtics. That last four tie will take place on Sunday at the Virginia Show Centre in Cavan. The Cavan Eagles will play Portlaoise or Moy Tolka Rovers in the other semi-final at the same venue.

PRES: Congratulations to St Brigid's Presentation Killarney Minor and Junior teams who were victorious in the Southwest Regional Basketball Finals. They now advance to the All-Ireland Series.

Sexton leads Ireland to historic Grand Slam

As expected, Ireland continued their reign of dominance by winning the Grand Slam on Saturday last, defeating England at home in the Aviva Stadium 29-16.

The senior side were warm favourites to win in Dublin, even without three key players ruled out through injury. The mantle of favouritism curtailed them in the opening half and they were anything but impressive, despite leading 10-6 at the interval.

England fought gallantly with just 14 men in the second half. Ireland steadied the nerves, however, and they finished in grand style with tries from Robbie Henshaw, Dan Sheehan and Rob Herring for that 29-16 win.

Job done and with about six minutes left to play, captain Johnny Sexton departed

the field to thunderous applause from the packed stadium. He had written his name into the record books in his final Six Nations game to become the top points scorer in the competition’s history. He finished with a total of 566, nine ahead of Ronan O’Gara on 557. Huge credit must go the English man Andy Farrell and to former great Paul O’Connell, the forwards coach.

To top it all off, 24 hours later the U20s won their second Grand Slam in a row at Musgrave Park. They were well in control in a 36-24 win over England.

One must add that England were forced to play with 14 men, a repeat of the same scenario as happened in the senior game. Ireland led 31-10 at half-time. England came with a late burst, but Ireland were clear winners.

The senior side have built on that amazing win in New Zealand last summer and

their eyes are now focused on the World Cup, starting against Romania on September 9. However, even though they defeated France this year, you can expect a rebound from the hosts in the World Cup. France and other big teams will test the current Grand Slam winners.

AMHRÁN NA BFHIANN

It was just wonderful to observe the Irish team singing along to Amhrán na bFhiann with such passion, especially that

great Munster warrior Peter O’Mahony. Over the years I have always admired the Welsh in particular for the sincerity and passion of the players and spectators singing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Land of My Fathers) in Cardiff. Unofficial it may well be but for intensity and a passionate, rousing anthem it is a joy to behold. Country! Country!

O but my heart is with you!

As long as the sea your bulwark shall be, To Cymru my heart shall be true.

B 4-0 Castleisland B. The young blues started well and played with a good tempo throughout today. Luke Foley opened the scoring on 22 minutes with a good strike from the edge of the penalty area. Some neat footwork by Darragh Fitzgerald lead to a tap in by Luke Foley for the all-important second right on half time. Nathan O’Brien went on a mazey run on the edge of the box only to be taken down leading to a direct free kick. Luke Foley stepped up to place a great shot into the bottom corner. Luke Foley capped a great performance with a tidy finish late on to make it four. A special mention to the Athletic defence who were solid throughout and in particular Lucas Coleman with a man of the match performance. Thanks to Castleisland for a sporting fixture and best of luck for the rest of the season.

RESULT: St Brendan's Park 0-5 Killarney Athletic. Athletic started strongly when Luke Doolan latched on to a through ball in the first 5 minutes to make it 1-0. Luke would complete his hat-trick and Jack Rudden adding another well-deserved goal before half time. The second half would continue in the same fashion with Athletic controlling the game and adding one more goal from a classy finish from outside the box by Liam O’Brien.

CLUB AWARDS NIGHT: Our Awards Night is nearly upon us, it's on in the Killarney Avenue Hotel this Friday March 24th at 8pm. Tickets are just 10 Euro with finger food and entertainment afterwards.

SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Our two Senior teams were in action this past week. The Senior B team were defeated by Beaufort on Thursday night in Direen on a 3-9 to 0-11 scoreline but what was fantastic to see was the large turnout of players. The team management of Donal O’Donoghue, Mike Piggott, Conor McNiece, Mark O’Leary, Michael Bernard O'Donoghue and player Sean McCarthy must be complimented for the work and effort they put in assembling the panel who have been busy training away in the last six weeks. Panel: Rob Osborne, Ian Prendergast, Daniel Car-

roll, Callum O’Donoghue (0-3), Kieran Pierce, Paudie Enright, Callum O’Grady, Sean McCarthy, Alan Moriarty, Noel Moynihan, Tadgh Doolan, Cian McCann, Jack O’Neill, Gavin Moriarty (0-3), Tom Cronin, Cian Sheahan, Alex O’Callaghan (0-1), Eoghan Crowley (0-1), Stephen Flattery (0-1), Dion O’Neill, Senan O’Leary, Conor McCarthy (0-1), Paul Moriarty, Jack Enright (0-1), Rob Lucey, Roman Carton. The Division 1 team were in Ballymac for the opening round . Seven different players scored in the first half as the lads led 1-11 to 0-1 having played with the aid of a stiff breeze. The home side played much better in the second period but the gap could not be bridged. Final score Killarney Legion 1-14 Ballymac 1-5. Team: Brian Kelly (0-1, 45), Podge O'Connor, Danny Sheahan, Rob Leen, Peter O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Doherty (0-1), Kieran O’Donoghue, Darragh Lyne, Cian Gammell (0-1), Finbarr Murphy (0-6), Jonathan Lyne, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Ryan O’Grady (1-2), James O’Donoghue (0-2), Peter McCarthy (0-1). Subs Jamie O’Sullivan, Cathal Sheahan, Denis Sheahan, Shaun Keane, Luke O’Donoghue. Dr Crokes GAA

CREDIT UNION COUNTY LEAGUE: Dr Crokes 1-12 Kilcummin 0-12. On Sunday we played Kilcummin, one week on from beating them in the EK Superleague Final. This was another highly entertaining game. Kilcummin took control for much of the first half leading 0-04 to 0-06 at half time. Mikey Casey was very unlucky not to hit the back of the Kilcummin net after hitting the crossbar halfway through the first half. The second half went more in our favour with Brian Fitzgerald and Evan Looney playing well in attack and Brian Looney, Michael Burns and Mikey Casey excelling up front. In the 10th minute Brian Fitzgerald was taken down inside the square and Michael Burns slotted the ball into the back of the net. The goal was the changing of the game. This was a good team performance. Final score 1-12 to 0-12. Div 4 SFL – Dr Crokes 1-15 Cordal 3-13. Div 6 SFL - Dr Crokes 3-12 Kerins O’Rahillys 1-09.

Fossa GAA

SENIOR: The Senior County League kicked with an away trip to Dromid Pearses. Our lads got off to a good start against a young Dromid side and soon had two points on the score board be-

fore Emmett O’Shea got a fantastic defence splitting ball in from brother Tadgh and finished to the net with a sublime chip. Dromid pulled two back before Emmett found the net again. Emmett, Tadgh O’Shea and Harry Buckley added points before Emmett put a ball across the square for Eoin Talbot to finish to the net. Half time it was 3-07 to 0-02 points. The second half was quite enough in the soft constant rain, Fossa added a couple of points and Matt Rennie did add a goal, game finished 4-09 to 0-06, solid performances throughout the pitch, well done to Mossie Prendiville – a late call up and had a great game in goals. Thanks to Dromid for the welcome and the hospitality after the game. Next weekend there is a development league round of games, we are at home to Austin Stacks C.

MINOR: The minor boys played Annascaul/Lispole Saturday in Fossa. The visitors got the upper hand for the first half and had most of the scoring in the half. It was 3-08 to 1-05 at half time. Not the first time these lads have found themselves behind and so the fight back began, Ronan Bennett with a goal but with 5 minutes to go the lads were still 5 points down. Fossa were awarded a penalty and Ted dispatched coolly to the net before adding two excellent points in the dying minutes. A drawn game looked on the cards but a sucker blow to the lads on the final attack Annascaul/Lispole stole in for a goal, the game ended 3-13 to 4-13. It was a pity as the lads had showed great character AGAIN to come back. No fixture yet for next weekend.

LOTTO: The numbers drawn were 3, 8, 11 & 25. There was no jackpot winner. This week’s jackpot is €12,600. SYMPATHIES are extended to Tim, Breda, Dan, John and Mary and the extended McKenna family of Pallas on the passing Maureen. May she rest in Peace.

RESULT: Credit Union County Senior Football League. Division 1, Round 1. Milltown/Castlemaine 0-11 Dingle 1-08. Our first time back in the top division of the Credit Union County Senior Football League in seven years sees us take a share of the points away from Dingle after a very workmanlike performance in challenging conditions. We led 0-8 to 1-3 at half time with Eanna O'Connor, Cathal Moriarty and Jonathan O'Sullivan tagging on 0-2 each in the opening half and the other two points came from Jerome Flynn and corner back Anthony Kelliher. Milltown/Castlemaine had a goal chance from Jerome Flynn also well saved by the Dingle goalkeeper. At the other end Tomas Sheehy and Dylan Geaney registered all Dingle's scores with the goal coming in fortuitous circumstances when an effort for a point hit the upright and landed into the arms of Sheehy who made no mistake and raised a green flag for the hosts. The second half was nip and tuck, but Milltown/Castlemaine kept their noses in front up until the last few minutes as pointed efforts from Cian O'Connor, Sean Hogan and Eanna O'Connor kept the scoreboard ticking over. Dylan Geaney was Dingle's go to man as they tried hard to reel the visitors in and he levelled the sides after 58 minutes from a close range free. An action packed game which seen both sides take a share of the spoils when Donal Casey blew the final whistle.
