PAGE SIX Killarney Rent Issues Affecting Locals & Businesses Alike
Ireland Has Changed A Lot Since 1979
Words: Adam Moynihan
Watching Mary McAleese’s Modern Family on RTÉ on Wednesday night, I was struck by how much Ireland has changed in such a short period of time. The former president marvelled at how diverse and varied Irish families are today compared to the 60s and 70s but the perception of “normal” has shifted drastically even from my own school days in the late 90s. When I was a child, it would have been considered weird for someone’s parents to be separated. Now, single parent homes are far more commonplace, as are blended families and same sex parents. That, to me, was one of the more heart-warming aspects of Mrs McAleese’s documentary: seeing how accepting and tolerant we have become over the past few decades. Attitudes to religion have changed too. Looking back at footage of the last papal visit in 1979, it’s staggering to see so many people - young people in particular - lining the streets and flooding the Phoenix Park to see Pope John Paul II. An estimated 2.7 million Irish men, women and children - half the entire population - came out to catch a glimpse of the pontiff at various events across the country. It shows how influential Catholicism was in Ireland at the time. The Catholic Church is far less prevalent in Irish society today than it was 40 years ago, but Ireland remains one of the most religious countries in Europe. For many, the visit of Pope Francis for the World Meeting of the Families is still a big deal. Others, however, have highlighted how expensive it will be for the taxpayer. The government are paying €3 million on security measures alone and with the litany of issues that urgently need to
be addressed in this country, perhaps most notably in our failing healthcare system, perhaps the money could be put to better use. It has also been revealed that certain garda operations targeting violent crimes and gangs have been affected by the Pope’s visit. In a bid to save money, gardaí in some parts of Dublin have been told that they cannot carry out crime operations while on overtime. Again, you would have to ask if it’s actually worth it. As for the Holy Father himself, there seems to be this perception that he’s a particularly liberal and forward-thinking pope. His tone certainly seems to be more progressive than his predecessors when it comes to topics like clerical abuse, but critics have accused him of merely paying lip service. In a statement released this week he said that no effort would be spared to prevent clerical sex abuse and its cover-up in the future but victims groups say action, not words, is needed. The Vatican has also ostensibly softened its stance on gay marriage but have attitudes actually shifted, or is the pontiff merely echoing public sentiment in an attempt to keep Catholicism relevant to young people? The evidence is fairly damning. Pictures of same sex couples were removed from a World Meeting of the Families booklet in January and a video by Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles David O’Connell was edited to exclude the part where he said that all families would be welcome at the event, including gay families. Irish society has changed dramatically since the last papal visit in 1979. Has the Catholic Church changed with it?
Rent prices in Kerry are up 8.9% on the same quarter in 2017 according to a new report published by property website Daft.ie. The average price in the county is €768. Incredibly, rents are now 27% higher than they were at their previous peak in 2008. Locals and would-be migrant workers have found it especially hard to get suitable property in Killarney town in recent times and a quick internet search reveals why. There are just nine residential properties listed for Killarney on Daft.ie, three of which are in the town itself. Airbnb, meanwhile, has over 300 Killarney properties on its website. Business is booming for the short-term letting website with users earning around €2,000 over the summer period. Airbnb claim they are contributing significantly to the tourist industry but critics say short-term lettings are harming Ireland’s rental sector. You can understand local people trying to make a quick buck but the lack of accommodation is putting a real strain on local businesses who are finding it virtually impossible to locate appropriate accommodation for prospective staff. Earlier this year, The Europe Hotel announced plans to tackle the issue head on: they’re building a €3 million staff accommodation block to house an additional 40 employees. With no sign of the problem resolving itself, other businesses may soon be forced to go down a similar route.
Fears Grow Over Proposed VAT Hike Fears are growing in Killarney over the government’s proposed VAT hike for the hospitality sector with many hoteliers warning that any increase could have major ramifications for the local economy. Niamh O’Shea, who is the Chairperson of Kerry IHF and GM of Killarney Park Hotel, says any VAT increase would hit Kerry hard. “Hiking the VAT rate would be wrong for Ireland’s largest indigenous industry and without question would have a disproportionately negative impact here in Kerry,” she said. “Tourism is a vital economic driver for our county and the largest employer. We continue to have a major challenge with seasonality and Brexit is just around the corner. We need to be able to remain competitive to survive.” Ettienne van Vrede, CEO of the Hayfield Family Collection (which includes the Great Southern Killarney, The Killarney Royal and Hayfield Manor), echoed Niamh’s sentiments. “Tourism makes a vital contribution to Kerry, supporting 15,700 jobs and generating €533m in revenue each year for our local economy,” he said. “Tourism itself in Kerry remains very seasonal. While we have achieved growth in recent years, it has been very uneven and follows a severe loss of ground during the downturn.” It remains to be seen when or how the proposed hike will be implemented but there may be trying times ahead for some of Killarney’s best-loved hotels.

Frank Swaps Car For Scooter To Beat Traffic Words: Adam Moynihan
We offer a 24-hour service & we need to get to people’s properties pretty quickly in the event of a burglary or fire alarm activation One Killarney businessman has come up with a novel way of dealing with the town’s crippling traffic problem: he has ditched his car in favour of a nifty scooter. Fed up with trying to get around town during the busy tourist, Frank Doran of Safeguard Security decided to buy a scooter so he could bypass the long lines of traffic that plague Killarney throughout the summer months. “We offer a 24-hour service and we need to get to people’s properties pretty quickly in the event of a burglary or fire alarm activation,” Frank explained. “The traffic is so frustrating around different parts of the town. It’s definitely worse this year. Last year was bad, and that’s what prompted me to think about getting a scooter, but this year has been hectic. If you’re out the Fossa side and
you’re trying to get in towards town, you come up Mission Road and it’s bumper to bumper. It can take you back as far as the cathedral sometimes and it moves at a snail’s pace. “It’s the bane of our lives, really.” The TEIR 1 report, which was released earlier this year, highlighted the town’s intertwined traffic and parking issues as major concerns but Mr Doran says it’s time for action, not words. “I know the council are trying to do the best they can and they’ve done lots of surveys, but nobody seems to be coming up with any ideas,” he said. “You wonder, what’s the point of these surveys? “It’s a marvellous town and we’re probably victims of our own success in that regard. I understand that Killarney is probably unique with the amount of vis-
itors who come here but we still need to be able to get around and manage our town better from a traffic point of view. “I think if a number of businesspeople – who see what’s happening each day of the week – in conjunction with the council and the gardaí could set up a committee to look at the problem, it might be a far better option. They’re doing surveys for a number of years now but we’re still no better off. Somebody needs to do something.” Mr Doran is just one of a large number of residents and business owners who have expressed their dismay at the traffic in Killarney this summer. It appears as though long tailbacks on Muckross Road, Lewis Road, Mission Road, Rock Road, Park Road and the Cork Road, among other places, have left locals at the end of their collective tether. Fair
It’s the bane of our lives, really play to Mr Doran for thinking outside the box but for many Killarney people alternative transportation isn’t an option. Hopefully this worrying issue isn’t swept under the carpet as things get quieter and we approach the off-season. Surely now is the time to address it head on; it can’t be left until next summer when things get out of hand again.
Kieran Delivers Killarney Advertisers To Traffic-Weary Locals Our own Kieran Healy provided some relief to a few of the Killarney motorists stuck in traffic jams last Friday by handing out copies of the Killarney Advertiser. With traffic coming to a standstill on many routes in and out of the town on a regular basis, Kieran thought what better way to get the latest edition of the Killarney Advertiser to the people of Killarney than by turning up at some traffic blackspots and delivering them by hand. Kieran and his Advertisers were greeted with open arms by the disillusioned drivers and passengers, many of whom commented that this summer’s traffic was the worst they’ve ever seen.
The scene was captured on video and shared on our Facebook page on Wednesday. At time of going to print, it already had over 6 thousand views. Motorist Philip Gammell commented: “Great idea. Cheered me up no end when stuck on Lewis Road! Traffic situation in Killarney is an absolute nightmare. Plaza junction is a total disaster.” Kate Moriarty added: “No better man than Kieran to brighten up people’s day.” Killarney’s traffic problems continue to vex local motorists and as our picture (which was taken at 5.30pm yesterday) shows, the Lewis Road/bypass junction is as chaotic as ever.

TOWNTALK Words: Adam Moynihan
Healy-Raes Join Our McShain Campaign The Healy-Raes have thrown their considerable political weight behind our ongoing McShain Campaign with Maura, Danny and Michael all coming together at Killarney House this week to show their collective support. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser yesterday, Maura agreed that John and Mary McShain should be honoured for their contributions to the town. She also confirmed that she intends to raise the issue at the next Killarney Municipal District meeting in September. “I’ll be asking Kerry County Council to liaise with the relevant agencies with the intention of honouring the McShains in a meaningful way given their most generous contribution to Killarney and, indeed, Kerry,” she said. “I will be seeking the support of other members.” Our campaign to recognise the philanthropic American couple, who came to own a large part of Killarney National Park before giving it back to the State for virtually nothing, has gained considerable momentum since the idea was first floated by our resident historian Damien Switzer earlier this summer. The reaction locally has been overwhelmingly positive with many Killarney people left scratching their heads as to why the former owners of Killarney House haven’t been honoured in the years since their death. John died in
1989 and Mary died nine years later in 1998. When asked if they would prefer to see busts/statues erected or Killarney House & Gardens renamed ‘McShain Memorial Park’, 81% of our readers voted in favour of the latter. This may prove difficult, however, with General Manager of Killarney House & Gardens Pat Dawson saying that such a move is “unlikely to be a runner”.
For her part, Cllr Healy-Rae said she was “surprised” that people wanted to change the name but added that she would be supportive of renaming the park if it was the best option. “There are many ways they could be honoured,” she said. “A monument, a bust, possibly renaming Killarney House & Gardens… I think it’s important to suggest all options and then hopefully come to the most realistic, appropriate and satisfactory one.” She added that she is optimistic of making this a reality. “I don’t think anyone could be opposed to this justifiably. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae, meanwhile, stated he would be in favour of erecting monuments to the McShains inside the Golden Gates. “This would be a proper and rightful testament to their memory and thank them for the massive contribution that they gave to Killarney town,” he said. Many other prominent officials have also expressed their support for our campaign, including Mayor John Sheahan, Cllr Michael Gleeson, and President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Paul O’Neill. The Minister for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, also reached out to me this week to confirm that he will speak to officials in the Department of Tourism about the matter.
Para Championships
Jordan Claims Bronze Killarney youngster Jordan Lee is the toast of the town after claiming bronze at the European Para Athletic Championships in Berlin. The talented 18-yearold, who only began practicing the sport in 2017, finished third in the T47 high jump yesterday. Lee’s bronze adds to Ireland’s haul of four golds, won by Greta Streimikyte, Noelle Lenihan, Orla Barry and Jason Smyth, and Orla Comerford’s bronze.
He went clear on his first attempt of 1.75m but he was just unable to match Spaniard Daniel Perez’s effort of 1.78m in his subsequent efforts. Alexandre Dipoko-Ewane of France won gold with a championship record effort of 1.89m. Jordan, who is coached by decorated athlete Tomás Griffin at Killarney Valley AC, was born with just one full arm but that hasn’t stopped him from achieving his sporting goals.

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
“Park Resources Are At Their Lowest Ever Level” A small number of politicians have been angry with me over last week’s column on the shameful state of the Blue Pool and particularly on my questioning their lack of thought and of not taking the National Park seriously. Yet the National Park is “a disgrace”, one concedes. I am glad they are angry, because if they are angry maybe they will get together and apart from wound the messenger, do something by way of united lobbying and serious strategic thinking. While one or two local councillors may join a “meitheal” in cutting rhododendron, and much credit to them they do, this is not strategic or serious thinking for the National Park. Killarney Nature Conservation and the Greens and other volunteers did exactly this three decades ago, before it was called a meitheal. But whatever it is called, cutting a piece of rhododendron and poisoning it here and there is a skirmish, it is not the battle and it is only a part skirmish of part of the battle. Such attacks did not work 33 years ago, and they won’t adequately answer the problem now. What needs to be done? Maybe we need to examine what it is we understand by ‘National Park’? The way it emerges in the public forum is very strange. The park is where deer run out from woods in the dark of night onto the path of innocent motorists, where ticks reside, lurking under fern bringing the debilitating Lyme disease, where the army needs to be called in to tackle the rhododendron, where planning is restrained for one-off houses, where people get lost, are knocked down by cyclists, break legs, and need to be rescued. In other words, the Killarney National Park in the public forum, even in Áras and Chontae Tralee, is problematic – sometimes it strikes me that it is being viewed like the threatening dark forest in the European imagination. Then there is the Fáilte Ireland image that everything is perfect. The truth lies elsewhere. The real story within the park is that resources are at their lowest ever level. It is now, of course, quite conveniently being allowed back to nature – let run wild, based on some laissez faire and skewed interpretation of conservation that things are not to be touched. Trees that fell in 2010 alongside walkways remain where they fell, rotting and ugly; wooden bridges disintegrate and are not repaired; deer are over-running what is left of the yew and oak forests; what remains of the forest
floor is eaten by sheep; river beds are not dredged or cleared of weed; deer fencing cannot be put up on roads because it would interfere with the deer. This is just plain neglect. It is cockamamie for not having a plan, for not being bothered to come up with one, for not investing or lobbying for manpower, and for pretending to understand conservation. Yet the vast majority of Killarney people have a deep connection with the park, and understand instinctively what it is and what it should be. To them the park is Killarney’s unique and ethereal beauty, a place of pleasure once confined but now available to all. They understand the National Park is a place that encourages reflection and awe - but it is also a place to be managed. It is therefore beyond belief that no national politician claiming to represent this town grasps the fundamental importance of the National Park for the people of Killarney and makes it a priority.
Perhaps this says as much about politicians, who are meant to be our legislators, as it does about the state of the park. There is in fact an act, the 1932 Bourne Vincent Memorial Park Act, to accept the “gift” of the Muckross Estate which obliges the Commissioners for Public Works and the minister responsible to manage and maintain it properly “for the general purpose of the recreation and the enjoyment of the public”. Section 12 of that 1932 legislation specifies “all works necessary” for the proper maintenance and management of the park for the public enjoyment. This includes the employment of enough personnel such as “water bailiffs and game keepers and workmen”. So, if the walkways in the Blue Pool are not manageable, if the forests are neglected and endangered, if the deer over-run, is it enough for our TDs and senators to put down odd questions? Should our legislators, who include now a minister, not be pursuing a breach of primary legislation on behalf of the people of Killarney? Should they not be urged to do so by local councillors? It says a lot that if two landlords managed it for hundreds of years the new Ireland, turning away billions in tax from Apple, and coming down with politicians and public servants, can’t. A month in the park might help after all…
Ploughing Championships Cancelled Due To Weather Concerns Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage have been forced to cancel their popular Ploughing Championships due to concerns over the weather. In recent years the event has been hindered by inclement weather conditions and the organisers have taken the decision to not go ahead with this year’s competition. “If we were able to guarantee that conditions
would be okay, the event would continue,” a spokesperson said. “Unfortunately, that’s not possible.” Fans of the Ploughing Championships have been urged to keep an eye out for further Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage events down the line. Check out killarneyvintage.com for the latest updates.

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry & beyond Micheál Martin is right of course, we should not drop history from the core Junior Cert curriculum. From September only Maths, English and Irish will be compulsory. He hasn’t said anything about Irish. His degree is in Irish and history. I know because I did Irish with him, same year, same boring tutorials in the “teanglann” by a very schoolmasterly individual who was using the third level equivalent of Buntús Cainte to inspire us to talk! The poetry, mythology, and manuscript studies were the interesting bits in UCC. I would sooner see Irish dropped than history and am amazed Micheál Martin has not addressed this anomaly in the Irish education system: the forcing of children to learn Irish. Is there anywhere else in the world where a language is taught for 13 years and then no one has the confidence to speak it? Or bothers to speak it? Or if they do and are not from the west Kerry Gaeltacht, they do not sound right? Ironically, for a language thrown out for economic reasons, it is largely and has long been an economic ticket - people from the Gaeltacht have a leg up when it comes to jobs in the public sector, teaching, the EU or Irish-speaking State media. So many people from Gaeltachts are in the civil and public services, it might appear they had a greater share of grey matter. But they were no brighter than anyone else, they just
“I Would Sooner See Irish Dropped Than History”
happened to speak a language for which they are hugely rewarded and promoted by the State. But the whole population is “Mao Tse tongued” as it were – forced to learn it if they want to get into college, or get a state job. And to cap it all, although Irish is rarely heard, even in Dingle town, it is still our “first language”. But there lies the lie, as it were. Irish is not our first language. This is aspirational and to allow it this false status engenders nothing but guilt and deep unease. We threw it out in the 19th century for economic reasons. And today, imbued with sentiment, and up to its oxters in “deontais” and compulsion, carrots and whips, Irish eludes us more than ever. The complexity we feel towards compulsory Irish and the failure 90 per cent must admit to when it comes to using and speaking this first language has a serious effect on us when it comes to learning other languages: we are ashamed we can’t speak what our ancestors spoke, we must all be stupid not to be able to rattle it off after 13 years of study. The fact remains we are no longer comfortable with it and the whole mad idea should be dropped. What should have been taught of course was the emotional language, everyday words, and the words for deep love and deep sorrow. Instead we had the tuiseal ginideach, and the modh coinníollach, the red biro, corset teaching, all completely useless. Who gives a toss about the wrong “h” or the wrong “f” in a word never
used anyway? It is as if we’re all presented with a worn out couch that still resembled a couch but we were compelled to kept dismantling it and putting it back together again and were told one day the couch would turn into a golden throne. If we had based the language on the rich 17th century it would have had some chance, instead we were fed boring pedestrian stories and told this was literature and this great Irish. The Irish we were taught also needed to be based on the rich north Cork Irish of the bardic schools, not the impoverished, and alien language of the coast, based on a romantic idea of the noble peasant. Our own Aoghán O’Rathaille himself gave out about being banished to the alien part of Kerry where cockles and spindly fish was the only food and he was made deaf by the waves. We should not drop history at a time when it is being rewritten and facts are being thwarted – and a course called Irish language studies could be incorporated into it. Meanwhile, history itself needs a change in attitude: for too long it has been about men in battles, and men with guns, and blood-heroism (in that context 1916 was completely overdone, I thought), when history should also be about local stories. Isn’t it high time Killarney had a town museum, tracing the history of settlement from the copper mines to the growth in tourism, with objects from flints to postcards and models of the cathedral? Then history would be alive for all of us, and we could all be included.

Kieran Meets The Newly Crowned Rose At The Races The newly crowned Rose of Tralee, Kirsten Mate Maher from Waterford, made her first public appearance at the Killarney Races on Wednesday and she was greeted by our own Kieran Healy who was on hand to present the prizes for the Killarney Advertiser Handicap. The race was won by 7/1 second favourite High Altitude. Fashion stylists, footballers and broadcasters are also descending on Killarney Racecourse this week for a four-day festival of high quality racing and entertainment. The racing will conclude on Saturday when TV3 fashion guru and stylist Mandy Maher, of the Catwalk
Model Agency, will link up with dapper Radio Kerry broadcaster Brendan Fuller to judge the Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Gent competitions. The prize for the Best Dressed Lady is a spectacular €2,000 diamond ring set in an exquisite gold band and the Best Dressed Gent will receive formal and casual attire worth €1,000. This evening’s (Friday’s) meeting will see many of the Kerry GAA stars joining the punters for a special Kerry GAA benefit night. It’s an occasion not to be missed and the message to Kingdom fans is to keep their eyes open and they’ll never know who they’ll bump into.
Racing today will commence 4.45pm and tomorrow (Saturday) it’s a 1.25pm start. The big one today is the €50,000 Grade B At The Races Handicap Hurdle, which will be the sixth race on the card at 7.30pm. Saturday’s feature race will be the €50,000 MSL Cork Mercedes Benz Handicap Steeplechase, Grade B, which will get under starter’s orders at 4.20pm. Admission on Friday and Saturday will be €20 and students and OAPs will be admitted from €12 with valid ID. Children under 12 years of age will be admitted free of charge but they must be accompanied by an adult.

SmallTalk Acclaimed local writer Breda Joy talks to Adam Moynihan about her new book, being a journalist in Killarney and her most embarrassing moment Hi Breda. It’s good to speak to a fellow journalist. How are things over at the Kerry’s Eye? Any good stories for me? Though I prefer to stay in the background myself, I’m making the news this week because my novel, Eat the Moon, will be in the shops next Tuesday. What in your opinion is the most challenging aspect of covering local news? Building up a good contact base. This doesn’t happen overnight. You build up contacts and win their trust over a long period of time. You are only as good and as accurate as your contacts. From a personal point of view, my biggest challenge was covering tragedies. As a Killarney person, what would you say is the biggest issue facing the town? How to get rid of all those extra tourists clogging the footpaths in August (joke). Traffic delays and coping with rising visitor numbers are inter-related issues that constitute the biggest problem facing Killarney as a tourist town. Zero contract hours and lack of public housing are the big scandals from a socio-economic point of view. Did you always want to be a writer? No. I wanted to be a vet at one stage. I was a secondary school teacher for two years in another life too. Since I was in my late 20s I’ve wanted to write a bestseller. Tell me about your new book. My new novel, ‘Eat the Moon’, is my first work of fiction though some would argue that I have been honing the art through journalism (joke). It’s based in 1969 on a Cork farm. The family at the centre of the story find their world turned upside down by a cruel twist of fate. Their journey back towards some semblance of normality revolves around a very special horse. This is your fourth book. How would you describe the writing process? Is it an enjoyable experience? The hardest part of creative writing is making yourself sit down and face the blank page. It’s very difficult too to stop judging the work in progress negatively. But once you get a good run at it, writing is enjoyable, especially when ideas seem to appear as if by magic. What was the toughest moment of your career? One of the most harrowing assignments I ever had was covering the deaths of a large number of Killarney people in a traffic accident on the Castleisland road about 25 years ago. What was your proudest moment as a writer? Is there any particular news story that has stuck with you? My proudest moment as a journalist was winning the Provincial Journalist of the Year Award in 1997. Interviewing Annie Murphy over the phone in the US the year the Bishop Eamonn Casey scandal broke was memorable as was the headline, ‘Red Cliff Re-Visited’. Also, the nightmare experience of a Tralee mother who discovered that the brain of her son was retained without her knowledge by Tralee General Hospital left a lasting experience on me. She was working as a cleaner in the hospital and found the organ labelled in a storage bucket. Any embarrassing moments? I wouldn’t be known for my knowledge of GAA matters. Shortly before an All-Ireland semi-final one year,
Breda Joy
I went to pay my car insurance. I had a vague idea that Diarmuid Murphy had something to do with the Kerry team so I asked him if he would be going to Dublin at the weekend. He smiled and said, yes, he would be. The next time I saw him, he was out on the pitch in Croke Park. Haha… Tell me about your family. Collective intake of breath in the Joy households at the sight of this one. My family would be reasonably well-known in Killarney through the grocery shop we once owned in Plunkett Street and also through jarveying. My son, Brendan, is teaching English in Vietnam at the moment, as is half of Ireland. I was there myself. Where did you go to school? St Brigid’s Secondary School. What’s your favourite place in Killarney? So many. The Meeting of the Waters at Dinis. The Old Kenmare Road. The Demesne river walk. If you could go for dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would they be and why? Michael Collins because I’d like to know why he agreed to go to London for the Treaty negotiations. Séamus ‘Sham’ Courtney because we’d share a few good laughs. Come on Lough Guitane. And Olivia O’Leary because I really admire her as a journalist and would love to see her as president of Ireland. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Choose your battles. Take three deep breaths. Some day I’ll learn to implement them. And there will be white blackbirds flying overhead. Do you have any nicknames? Mother Superior. Maggie Thatcher. Beats me why. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? No. What’s your most used emoji? A what? Joke. Smiley face.
What would you sing at karaoke? Ain’t Got No, I Got Life by Nina Simone. Who would play you in a movie about your life? Lisa Kudrow alias Phoebe from ‘Friends’ to convey my ditzy side and Frances McDormand because I can be a tough old buzzard at times. And last one… Can you tell me a joke? Why is it advised to wear two pairs of socks playing a round on the Killeen Course? I don’t know… In case you get a hole-in-one. Good one, Breda! Thanks for talking to us. Thanks Adam.

Locals “Tormented” By Loud Manhole Covers Letter
Dear Editor, Over the past number of weeks I have been contacted by residents of Killarney town and suburbs about the inconvenience being experienced by themselves and by visitors, particularly at night time, from the constant loud rattling of manhole covers which are the property and responsibility of Irish Water. The local office of Irish Water is aware of the problem and has done all that it can to have the necessary work undertaken by the agent for
Irish Water. There has to date, however, been no progress and people continue to endure night-long tormentation and lack of sleep. I call on Irish Water as a matter of considerable urgency to direct its agent to carry out the work and to resolve any internal difficulties that are resulting in the protracted delays that are disrespectful to its paying public. Mo bhuíochas leat, Cllr Michael Gleeson

With the latest round of CAO offers out this month, Killarney Credit Union is advising parents and students to call in now to discuss their college finance options. With the average cost of living for a student in Ireland studying away from home for three years amounting to over €33,000, and those living at home amounting to €20,502*. The Credit Union is recommending that parents call in and speak to a dedicated student loans officer to discuss their needs. Speaking about third level costs, Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer with Killarney Credit Union, stated: “With the first round of CAO offers out on August 20, there is pressure on parents and students to quickly organise accommodation, pay student contribution charges and meet the array of costs associated attending college. “We are recommending that parents and students come in early, discuss potential college finance needs and provide the necessary loan documentation. The member can then obtain pre-approval for the student loan, and they need not draw it down until its required. The amount required may also be adjusted later to suit the students course duration or college attended. “Both parents and students can find meeting the costs of third level stressful and daunting and recent research have shown that approximately six-out-of-10 parents get into debt to cover college
costs*,” Helen added. Killarney Credit Union have put in place dedicated student loans officers for the month of August who can meet parents and students by appointment in each of their branches. Appointments can be made with Karena in the Beech Road branch, Donagh in the Park Road branch and Eileen in the Kenmare branch on 064 66 31344. The Credit Union is also offering a third level bursary worth €4,000 for students attending third level for the first time. There are four opportunities to win, with the winners each receiving €1,000 each. It is open to all members of the Credit Union. Closing date is the Friday, September 21. Application forms are available online or in branches. Further information on the third level costs and budget sheets can be found on www.killarneycu.ie *Source: Cost of Third Level Survey, ILCU, August 2016

Scotts Lakers – Be Part of It Words: Eamonn Keogh
Lakers Strengthen Squad Ahead Of New Season
Professional Players: Profiles
Following a successful debut season, Scotts Lakers St Paul’s are looking forward with optimism to the new basketball campaign which is only weeks away. After an absence of nearly a decade, top flight National League basketball returned to Killarney last season and the Scotts Lakers attracted record crowds to the Killarney Sports Centre for their home games. It was a case of Saturday Night Fever in Killarney as the biggest crowds in the division flocked to see their heroes play. Indeed, the attendances were consistently larger than any Super League venue in the country, apart from the ones attracted by our neighbours the Tralee Warriors. The Killarney Sports Centre hosted a crowd of 950 people for the Lakers’ clash with Killorglin last October. This was a record crowd for any National League or Super League game in the history of Killarney basketball. Scotts Lakers didn’t disappoint in their opening season, enjoying a good cup run before bowing out at the semi-final

stage to eventual winners Ballincollig. They then went on the secure the Division 1B Shield title. Team coach Cormac O’Donoghue is in charge of the Lakers again for the new campaign and his squad has been boosted by some exciting new signings. American Harrison Deneka is a native of Memphis, Tennessee and has just graduated from Birmingham Southern College, Alabama. At 6’7” he is very versatile and can play the shooting guard or small forward role. In his final season, he led the Birmingham SC Panthers in total points (474), total rebounds (250), points per game (17.6) and rebounds per game (9.3). He also dominated the conference in rebounds and finished top 10 in five categories, recording 13 double-doubles and scoring a career-high 37 points in one match. Another significant new signing for the Scotts Lakers is Dutch power forward Papito Hersisia, who has experience from playing in Holland and Germany. His huge 6’8” frame and ability to dominate under the boards will give the Lakers extra strength this season. Exciting point guard Dailian Mason from Birmingham is back with the Scotts Lakers again after joining the squad during the middle of last season. An outstanding three-point shooter, Mason will give the Lakers that extra outside scoring threat. Cormac O’Donoghue and his squad of players have been in pre-season training for a number of weeks and it has been announced that Mark Greene will captain the side this year. The Killarney native was the Lakers most consistent Irish player last season and will have another huge role to play in the campaign ahead. The full squad hasn’t been finalised yet but it is expected to include local players Pádraig Lucey, Andrew Fitzgerald, Philip O’Connor, Cian Clernon, Dan Griffin, Dylan O’Sullivan and Irish-American Justin Tuason.

Future Is Bright For St Paul’s Youngsters The past season was another very successful one for the juvenile teams of St Paul’s Basketball Club. With membership continuing to grow and reach record numbers of over 400 boys and girls, the future of Killarney basketball looks very bright and promising. The St Paul’s Little Dribblers initiative caters for almost 50 U-8 players every Friday evening where young participants learn new and basic basketball skills. The recent Government Sports Capital Grant for the club will facilitate the purchase of four new professional basketball hoops to assist the development of these young players. At U-10 boys level the club catered for 50 players while 35 more played at U -10 girls level. Both teams competed in monthly blitzes during the season while St Paul’s hosted a blitz to finish the season. The St. Paul’s U-11 boys team reached the Kerry Cup final but lost a very close game while the U-11 second team made substantial progress throughout the season. The U-11 girls team were also very competitive in the Kerry Area Board league and cup activities. The U-12 boys team enjoyed a tremendous season securing a league and cup double. The U-12 girls also had a great campaign in Division 1 and clinched the Shield title. St. Paul’s U-14 girls did well in Division 1 competitions and the Division 3 team reached the semi-final of the playoffs. The U-14 boys had an outstanding season winning the cup and the Castleisland Christmas tournament and they also finished joint top of league. However they missed out on the title after losing an away game to Duagh without having the opportunity to play at home. The U-14 Division 3 team also competed very well with a huge panel of players.
The U-16 girls did well in Division 1 and lost the Shield final. The highlight of the season was a trip to Berlin in October where they won all their games against Alba Berlin. The U-16 Division 3 team remained in contention at the top of the league all season and were unlucky to lose out in the cup final. The U-16 and U-18 boys teams trained hard all year under the guidance of Mikey Keogh and Antuan Bootle with the U-18s reaching the cup final. The U-18 girls team competed in a very tough Division 1 but did very well to reach the cup final before losing to Castleisland. Congratulations to Jamie O’Neill, Ellen Kennedy, Tara Donnellan, Ben Switzer and Luke Crowley

St Paul’s juvenile section are very grateful to our main sponsor Tricel and the Stack family for their tremendous support. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Trump Corner Attorney General Sessions Hits Back At Trump
US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has responded to Donald Trump’s latest attack on him by insisting that the justice department he heads will not bend to political pressure. The apparent rebuke of Mr Trump came after the president made personal comments about him during an interview. Mr Trump has been vociferous in his criticism of the Department of Justice. He has been particularly riled by its handling of the inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Mr Sessions, an early supporter of Mr Trump’s campaign, recused himself from that inquiry and handed control to his deputy, Rod Rosenstein. That decision, and the ongoing progress of the inquiry under special counsel Robert Mueller, has provoked frequent outbursts from Mr Trump, both in person and on his Twitter feed. On Tuesday, in the most dramatic development yet linked to that inquiry, former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort was found guilty of tax and bank fraud, and Mr Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to crimes including tax evasion, bank

fraud and campaign finance violations. “While I am attorney general, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations,” Mr Sessions said in a statement. “I demand the highest standards, and where they are not met, I take action.” In an earlier interview with the Fox and Friends programme, Mr Trump said: “As I’ve said I wanted to stay uninvolved. But when everybody sees what going on in the justice department I always put justice now with quotes. It’s a very, very sad day. Jeff Sessions recused himself, which he shouldn’t have done. Or he should have told me. “Even my enemies say that Jeff Sessions should have told you that he was going to recuse himself, and then you wouldn’t have put him in. He took the job and then he said I’m going to recuse myself. I said: ‘What kind of a man is this?’ “And by the way he was on the campaign. You know the only reason I gave him the job? Because I felt loyalty, he was an original supporter. He was on the campaign. He knows there was no collusion. And what’s come out of Manafort, no collusion. What’s come out of Michael Cohen, no collusion.”
Venezuelans Flock To Peru Ahead Of Rule Change
Venezuelans trying to emigrate to Peru are rushing to get there before Saturday when new rules will come into force requiring them to have valid passports. Up to this point, Venezuelans have been allowed to enter Peru with just their ID cards. Many have been waiting for their passports for years with the authorities blaming “mafias” inside the registry services for the delays. More than 2 million Venezuelans have fled their country since 2014. They are fleeing a severe economic crisis which has led to severe shortages of food, medicine and basic goods. Many of those fleeing the coun-
try say they are doing so because they cannot get the operations and medical care they need. Yesterday, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi urged Peru, and Ecuador, which already put a similar measure in place on August 18, to “continue to allow those in need of international protection to access safety and seek asylum”. According to UN figures, 26,000 entered Peru in 2017 but Peruvian migration chief Eduardo Sevilla says many more have arrived since. He puts the number of Venezuelans currently in Peru at 400,000.
Uganda’s Pop Star MP Charged With Treason The Ugandan MP and pop star Bobi Wine has been charged with treason in a civilian court shortly after a military court freed him. Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, was immediately re-arrested after being released. His lawyers say he has been assaulted in detention, which the military and President Yoweri Museveni deny. He was detained along with 30 others ahead of last week’s by-election in the north-western town of Arua. The arrests have raised tension across the country and sparked protests. Police have sealed off the homes of a number of opposition politicians, and high-profile opposition figure Kizza Besigye has been arrested in the capital Kampala. The BBC’s Catherine Byaruhanga, who was at court in the northern town of Gulu, says he was unable to stand by himself
and there were moments when he was visibly in pain. His lawyer said he needed “urgent medical care”, Uganda’s New Vision newspaper reported. After being freed and told that charges of unlawfully possessing firearms were dropped by the General Court Martial, Bobi Wine was told by his lawyer that he was under arrest again and he was put into a police vehicle with his wife to be taken to the Chief Magistrates Court. He was remanded in custody until August 30, when he is due back in court. There have been protests against his detention in Uganda and calls by global stars such as Chris Martin, Damon Albarn and Angelique Kidjo for his release. On Tuesday the Ugandan military apologised after soldiers were caught on film beating up a journalist who was covering a demonstration supporting Mr Wine.

10% Of Children In Ireland Do Not Wear Seatbelts
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and gardaí have appealed to parents as new research showed how 10% of children travelling in vehicles were not using proper restraints such as child car seats or seat belts. Last year, the RSA conducted a nationwide study that observed seatbelt usage by 3,861 children both in the front and the rear seats of the vehicle. As part of that particular study, 93% of children were wearing seatbelts. However, when observing children in the rear of the vehicle only, the number dropped to 89%. According to the RSA, the figures show that some parents are still allowing their children to travel in cars without being securely buckled in. Transport Minister Shane Ross urged parents to make sure their children are safe when they are in a car. “With children returning to
school over the coming weeks, traffic levels will increase, and motorists need to be mindful of our most vulnerable road users. I am asking parents to ensure any child travelling in their vehicle is using their seatbelt or the correct child restraint, and to educate children to be vigilant when out walking or cycling to school.” The RSA’s chairperson, Liz O’Donnell, said that the latest stats are “very worrying”. She added: “This is very worrying especially when you consider that the most dangerous thing a child does each day is travel as a passenger in a car. A child cannot be responsible for their own safety. “It’s up to us as responsible adults to do the right thing to ensure their safety. Every child travelling in a car must use a child car seat or wear a seatbelt. I am urging parents to ensure that children are safely and securely restrained, even on the shortest trip.”
Tiger Says Limerick’s Win Was “Pretty Cool” Tiger Woods has congratulated Limerick hurlers for the All-Ireland victory last Sunday over Galway, saying “it was a pretty cool result” for friend JP McManus. Woods, while confirming he would play the JP McManus ProAm in July 2020 in Adare Manor, recalled attending a hurling match and described it as “neat”. He told golfbytourmiss.com: “JP
is one of my dearest friends and it’s cool his Limerick team finally won the title as I know how passionate he is about his hurling as well as his love of horse racing and, of course, golf. “I remember one year I was over for his Pro-Am and JP took me to a hurling match. I thought it was pretty neat but not a sport I would want to try,” Woods said and then smiled.
Rain On The Cards For Visit Of Pope Francis Pope Francis could be set to experience some fairly standard Irish weather this weekend as he arrives on our shores for the World Meeting of Families. According to Met Éireann, we can expect some sunny spells, heavy showers and even hail and thunder in the coming days. The Pontiff arrives in Dublin on Saturday morning, where he’ll be met by fine conditions with only a chance of intermittent showers throughout the day.
Rain will spread west overnight ahead of the Pope’s visit to Knock on Sunday morning and 8 millimetres of rain is forecasted for 7am. Looking towards the main event on Sunday when 500,000 people will attend mass in Phoenix Park, Met Éireann is predicting heavy rain. 7.4 millimetres of rain is expected to fall in the Park at 1pm but this will clear off in the afternoon, with temperatures set to reach the high teens.
British-Iranian Woman Granted Temporary Release A British-Iranian woman has been reunited with her family after being granted a threeday release from prison in Iran. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was jailed for five years in 2016 after being convicted of spying, which she denies. She said she was “overwhelmed” and it would be “awesome” for her four-yearold daughter to “have a mummy again”. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said her imprisonment was a “gross injustice” and the release should be permanent. The Free Nazanin campaign group said a three-day release was “standard practice” ahead of lengthier times out of jail and her lawyer was due to apply for an extension on Saturday. Her husband Richard Ratcliffe said her temporary release was a “happy surprise” and she is with family in Damavand. Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who works for the charity Thomson Reuters Foundation, was arrested at Tehran airport after visiting her family on holiday. Iranian authorities have accused her of espionage but she insists the visit was to introduce her daughter to her family. In a statement issued by the Free Nazanin
campaign, Mr Ratcliffe said his wife was still in her nightclothes when she was given 10 minutes notice on Thursday morning that she was being released until Sunday, August 26. The campaign group said the possibility of release had been discussed for several weeks but there had been “a number of false dawns”. She was released on condition she does not: conduct interviews with the media, visit a foreign embassy (especially the UK’s) or attempt to leave Iran Free Nazanin said Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her father have both separately promised she will obey the rules.

Netflix - To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before
Review: Ariana Grande - Sweetener Ariana Grande’s fourth album comes just over a year since the devastating attack at her 2017 Manchester concert that killed 22 people and injured over 500, leaving Grande “permanently affected.” She responded with Sweetener, a gorgeous, pastel album about love, happiness, strength, and womanhood. She’s deeply in love, evidenced on the tropical “blazed,” and “R.E.M,” with harmonies described as “rainbow clouds” by Pharrell, who produced over half the album. She exits a toxic relationship in “better off”; “God is a woman” is a feminine anthem that she
says is her “favourite thing I’ll probably ever do”. The album closer “get well soon” is a self-care message she wrote immediately following a panic attack. “It’s about being there for each other and helping each other through scary times and anxiety,” she said. “I wanted to give people a hug, musically.” Sonically, Sweetener brings some surprises—sparse rhythms and what she calls “dreamier” harmonies replace many of the huge beats and choruses she’s famous for. She said the album is “more like me as a person. And what I’ve been craving to do.”

al-life love and heartbreak. If John Hughes were alive today, he might very well make a movie like “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” which doesn’t talk down to its audience, but instead treats them as young adults, demonstrating how anyone’s initial attempts at romance are like learning to walk: We’re all a little bit wobbly at first. Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before might be the best teen romance of the decade.

Chef Collab Aims To Highlight Young Talent We’re using the Collab as our first small step in making Killarney a culinary hub, like Dingle & Galway are Noel Enright and Chad Byrne of Chef Collab.
Chef Collab is a novel initiative aimed at highlighting and nurturing talented young chefs in Killarney and around Ireland. Kerry Chef of the Year Chad Byrne, who is the Group Development Chef at the Gleneagle Group and Head Chef at the Brehon, initially set up Chef Collab with four of his peers. So what is it Chad explains: “There are a lot of chefs leaving the industry so the initiative behind Chef Collab was to make it exciting for them. We send them off to some of the best restaurants in the country, and when they come back to Killarney their mentors will come back down with them. Then we’ll do a pop-up in a different venue most months. It’s all about highlighting the young
guys in the craft and just to give them a platform to shine.” Chad says the events are a win-win. “They sell out very fast. It’s only €25. And the food is the best food you’ll get any Monday night anywhere in the country. Period. I’d put my house on it. The dudes that we have cooking are the crème de la crème in the business and they’re willing to come down and give their time for free, inspiring young guys and girls to go to the next level.” The Chef Collab is going nationwide next month with a double event in Waterford and Cork but Chad and co. will be bringing it back to Killarney every second month. Chad is passionate about the initiative and he hopes it will help our town
to become a major player in the food game. “We’re using the Collab as our first small step in making Killarney a culinary hub, like Dingle and Galway are. We have some of the best suppliers locally, the produce that we have is unbelievable, and it’s just to highlight that fact and keep the young chefs interested.” Their next event, which is already sold out, takes place in Courtney’s on Monday night and will be attended by a host of elite chefs, major industry players and some exciting local talents. It’s a fantastic idea and we wish Chad and his colleagues all the best. Keep an eye out for more Chef Collab updates in future editions of the Killarney Advertiser.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS TO PERSONAL INJURY ASSESSMENT All personal injuries claims lodged in Ireland must first be lodged with the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB). This applies to all personal injury cases save and except medical negligence cases. In the event of an accident taking place wherein you have sustained an injury by way of a slip or fall, road traffic accident or some other incident arising from which you have sustained injuries which is not your fault, you are entitled to lodge a claim for a personal injuries compensation it is important.

application to the PIAB. Once you lodge your claim with PIAB, PIAB then notifies the respondent and the claim is underway. The application to PIAB is by way of an application form together with a medical report and the appropriate fee. Thereafter the PIAB will write to the Respondent(s) inviting them to agree to the PIAB assessing the matter and subject to their agreement the PIAB will then proceed to assess the claim on the basis of medical evidence and evidence in support of an application for out of pocket expenses to include loss of earnings etc. Once the PIAB make a determination, that determination is reduced to writing and furnished to the applicant and the respondent(s) and each party has a short period of time to accept or reject the determination. If both parties accept the determination, the Payment Order is issued and that concludes matters. However, if the matter is not accepted by both parties, an Authorisation to issue proceedings then issues. Most importantly to note is that in the event that you have sustained an injury and you are seeking compensation, you should ensure to act quickly and prosecute your claim promptly.
It is important to note that it is incumbent upon all claimants to notify the person or persons to whom they are holding responsible as soon as possible following the incident. There is an obligation to notify the person or persons responsible (the Respondents) as quickly as possible but within two months in writing of the incident giving rise to the claim but it is not fatal to the claim if this is not done but most certainly all claims for personal injuries must be lodged and appropriately commenced within two years of the date of the accident in default of which the claim will be statute barred. The Statute of Limitations being the two year period is the time frame within which you must commence your claim. After that time where the claim is statute barred, your claim The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice will fail. It is important that you establish and nominate as respondents all and any persons who may bear responsibility for your injuries and these should be nominated in the

Garden Magic When Happy, Lavender Can Thrive For Years A plant which has done exceptionally well this year is undoubtedly the lavender. Long sunny, warm summers suit this Mediterranean plant, so this year has been ideal for it. For those of us who find it an impossible plant to grow, it is worth remembering that this plant hails from hot, dry countries, and therefore we must help it when we can! It prefers slightly alkaline, well-drained conditions. Plant in full sun; south-facing is best. If your soil is wet, or clay, mix plenty of organic matter and sand in with it, and even then, planting on a mound or ridge is preferable. If the soil is very acidic, adding lime can greatly improve growth. Lavender can be grown very successfully in pots, as they do not like soil to be too fertile or wet. Keeping them quite dry over winter improves their resistance to cold. When happy, lavender can thrive for years. It tends to become woody after a few years and pruning is essential. Many books recommend pruning in spring but I find cutting back immediately after flowering, in late summer, is best. Lavender does not ‘break’ easily
from old wood; that is, buds do not easily come from old wood, therefore if plants have become lanky and woody, it is usually better to replace them. Cuttings can be taken in early autumn or spring. They are quite easy to root but anticipate a 50% failure/success rate as the cuttings often rot just after rooting. Good ventilation is necessary for a better success rate, as well as fungicide which is unavailable to the amateur gardener! Lavender can be grown in many situations. They are popular in a formal garden, both as a filler plant behind buxus hedges or as hedging in their own right. It has long been associated with roses and is often used as under planting or companion planting in rose gardens. In the border, it is beautiful planted with bright green alchemilla mollis, or ladies mantle, peonies, phlox or penstemon. A contemporary way of using it is with Verbena bonariensis and Agapanthus. Blue/silver gardens are very trendy currently and it is used extensively with rosemary, salvias, veronica, eryngium, caryopteris and perovskia. There are many varieties of lavender to choose from
but there are basically three types: French (or Spanish), English and a hybrid of the two called Lavendin. The ones we see in garden centres are usually the first two. French lavender has flowers with ‘ears’, two long petals at the top. English lavender is the traditional variety, which, it must be said, grows better in our wet climate. It has the stronger scent, a bushier, more compact growing habit, and, in my opinion, better colour. ‘Munstead’ and ‘Hidcote’ are the hardiest and oldest English lavenders. French lavender is available in so many varieties it is often difficult to see the difference between them, but a tall one to look out for is ‘Vera’, and there is a whole ‘wings’ range which grows well. Debby is available for garden advice and consultations, just contact her on 086 6088156 or via barnhillgarden@gmail.com Evening Gardening classes will start again in September in the Community College. Places can be booked by contacting the Community College from September 1. These classes will cover all aspects of gardening and are suited to beginners and enthusiasts.

Rowing
Kerry Rule The Waters
After an astonishing weekend of rowing at the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships at Ferrybank, Co Wexford. 500 crews descended and, much like the Vikings, did battle on the waters of the sunny southeast. 3,000 rowers from around the coastal towns of Ireland were represented. The event was hosted by the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation with the assistance of Troll & Maudlintown Rowing Clubs, with an array of races in ICRF One design Celtic Boats, Currachs, East Coast Skiffs,
Wexford Cots, Kerry Four Oars, Donegal Skiffs, Celtic Long Boats and the South Kerry Seine boats. It was Flesk Valley Rowing Club, Killarney, who were crowned Senior Men’s Championships 2018, and the Workmen’s Rowing Club, also from Killarney, who were crowned Senior Ladies Champions 2018. Both Clubs gave outstanding performances on the water. Workmen’s RC came home with 9 gold medals, 5 silver and 3 bronze, whilst Flesk Valley, returned with 6 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals. Other Killarney Crews, winning gold included, Fossa Rowing Club
and the newly reformed Commercials Rowing Club. South Kerry Crews didn’t disappoint their beloved Iveragh Peninsula, as ever they packed their pockets with medals - Cromane, Sneem, Callinafercy, Sive, Templenoe, Valentia Island Rowing Clubs, brought home more than 30 Medals and as much silverware. A special presentation was made to Mary B. Teahan, ‘in recognition of her service to Irish Coastal Rowing’ by the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation. It was presented by Elaine Nelson, Bill Deasy, President ICRF, and Victor Bridges, Chairman ICRF.

VW Beetle Will Not Be Replaced, No EV Future For Bug
The car world will soon enter the electric age and in doing so, some old favourites will have to be let go. One of them will be the iconic Volkswagen Beetle, which will not be replaced after the current car goes out of production. This was confirmed by VW R&D boss Frank Welsch. Welsch said that “two or three generations is enough now,” referring to the Bug, which was
brought back to life in 1997, with the current and second generation model following in 2011. The VW chief said the car was “made with history in mind but you can’t do it five times and have a new new new Beetle.” The Beetle is also available as a convertible, and Welsch said that the recently confirmed T-Roc convertible will fill the role of the Beetle Cabriolet. No future Beetle EV to rival the upcoming MINI
Electric does not mean that VW is completely throwing retro out of the window. Europe’s biggest carmaker has already confirmed that it will turn the Volkswagen ID Buzz electric concept into reality. Inspired by the Type 2 Transporter, the new age bus will be the retro car in VW’s ID electric family. So, if you’ve always wanted a Beetle, or want a reminder of the previous motoring era in an electric world, this is your last chance to get one.
Aston Martin Will Build 25 ‘Goldfinger’ DB5s… For €3.6m A V8-engined Cygnet aside, Aston Martin clearly never jokes about its work, because this is quite serious indeed. The storied British carmaker has announced a run of 25 brand-new DB5s, modelled after one of the world’s most famous movie cars: The Goldfinger DB5. Just like the DB4 GT Continuation models at the end of 2016, Aston is building 25 brandnew Aston Martin DB5s, built as “authentic reproductions” of the exact car that Connery, Brosnan and Craig all drove in various screen outings. By authentic, Aston mean things like revolving number plates “and
more”. We suspect the ejector seats and oil spray probably won’t make the cut, though we live in hope. Each will be assembled at Aston’s Newport Pagnell factory – where the original DB5 was made – and will feature “sympathetic modifications”. And it’ll come in any colour you want as long as that colour is Silver Birch. Just like in the movies. The original car came with a 4.0-litre straight-six with 282bhp and 280lb ft of torque. If it’s the same philosophy as the DB4 GT Continuation, expect the same, only slightly tweaked for reliability.

CRONIN
Treasured memories of our beloved son and brother Brian Coffey of Crohane Fossa who died on the 25th August 2010.
In loving memory of a wonderful Son and Brother Shane Courtney, Faha East, Faha, Killarney, who died on the 26th August 2011, Rest in Peace.
In loving memory of Noreen Cronin Late of College Street, Killarney Who died on the 27th August, 2000.
In loving memory of our 2 beautiful brother David and Kevin Breen, Late of 26 Hazelwood Drive, Upper Park Road, Killarney, and Aine O’Riordan, Late of St. John’s Park, Castleisland, who died tragically on 25th of August 2010. 8 years have now past on, hard to believe ye are gone, so young at heart, but yer memories are a keepsake, no one can take away. Ye always had a smile, a laugh, a joke, time to care and share for us all. Step by step we are taken in life until the day God calls us one by one to meet ye up in heaven. The loss of ye is a heartache, our hearts are broken losing ye so soon. In heaven ye are resting now with yer Daddys minding ye. Still praying together for yer short lives ye spent with us. We miss yer smiling faces. The stars at night that’s ye saying goodnight. Till we meet again one day and our family chain will link up again. Ye were way too young to leave us. Yer picture in a frame we look upon. We think of happier times we had with ye in our company as a tear comes to our eyes knowing yer gone, but yer not forgotten by us day or night.
May the winds of love blow softly And whisper for you to hear How much we love and miss you Brian As it dawns another year. Sadly missed and always in our hearts Love Mom, Dad, Beth and Simon.
8TH ANNIVERSARY COFFEY
Rest in peace to you all this day and forever.
The depths of sorrow we can not tell, Of the loss of one we loved so well, And while he sleeps a peaceful sleep, His memory we shall always keep, Till we meet again.
In loving memory of our dear grandson Brian Coffey who died on the 25th August 2010.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART
NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
O’DONOGHUE
Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. T.B
O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. E.O.S.
In loving memory of Jerry McGillicuddy, Anabla, Kilcummin who died on the 23rd of August 2010.
In loving memory of Anne O’Donoghue late of Firies Cross, whose 39th birthday occurred on the 23rd August.
You did so many things for me, Your heart was kind and true, When I needed someone, I could always count on you.
Although you are gone before me One thing I hope you’ll do Walk slowly down the road For one day I will follow you
My heart is full of memories, With pride I speak your name, Though life goes on without you, It will never be the same.
I want to know each step you take So I might take the same For one day down that long long road You’ll hear me call your name

County Championship Round 1 Preview
Can Anyone Stop The Crokes? Adam Moynihan looks ahead to an exciting weekend of action as the quest for the Bishop Moynihan Cup gets under way
Dr Crokes v St Kieran’s Saturday, August 25 at 4pm (Lewis Road) The above headline is getting a bit repetitive but, unfortunately for 16 of the 17 teams in contention, so too is the Kerry County Championship. Dr Crokes are on the hunt for three-in-a-row and Pat O’Shea’s team are odds-on favourites to prevail once again in 2018. The Killarney club retained their Club Championship crown with a comprehensive victory over Kenmare in April and they remained unbeaten throughout their County League campaign, winning 10 of their 11 games and drawing one. Untimely injuries to key men Gavin White and Tony Brosnan may open the door for their rivals just a bit but if any squad can absorb the blow of losing such an influential pair, it’s the Crokes’. St Kieran’s forced a replay with Austin Stacks in Round 1 last year before being eliminated by West Kerry in the loser’s round. They couldn’t have been handed a more difficult opener this time out, but they might take heart from their showing against the same opposition in 2016 when they lost by a single point. Having said that, anything other than a comfortable Crokes victory would be a major shock. Verdict: Crokes by eleven. Dr Crokes Last year: Champions (beat South Kerry) Winners: 12 times (1901, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1991, 2000, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017) Current form: WWWWW Tournament odds: 5/6 St Kieran’s Last year: Round 2B (lost to West Kerry) Winners: Once (1988) Clubs: Ballymacelligott, Brosna, Castleisland Desmonds, Cordal, Currow, Knocknagoshel, Scartaglin Tournament odds: 40/1
Legion and Rathmore know each other well
Rathmore v Killarney Legion Saturday, August 25 at 6pm (Rathbeg) These two groups of players have met so many times in recent years they must be sick of the sight of each other. The sides are fairly evenly matched but Rathmore have had the upper hand of late, defeating Legion in last year’s O’Donoghue Cup final and also coming out on top when they met in the County League at the end of June. Led by high calibre players like Paul Murphy, Mark Reen and Shane Ryan, and with two-time All-Star Aidan O’Mahony rumoured to be back and ready for action, Rathmore will be a formidable championship team as always. As a Legion player it would probably be unwise of me
to predict the outcome of this one. Verdict: Too close to call. Rathmore Last year: Quarter-final (lost to South Kerry) Winners: Never Current form: WLWLW Tournament odds: 22/1 Killarney Legion Last year: Round 2A (lost to Austin Stacks) Winners: Once (1946) Current form: LLWWL Tournament odds: 25/1
Can the Shamrocks rock the South?
South Kerry v Kenmare Shamrocks Saturday, August 25 at 6pm (Cahersiveen) Last year’s beaten finalists begin their 2018 campaign with a home fixture against Kenmare Shamrocks in Caherciveen. Having pushed the Crokes reasonably close in 2017, the men from the south will be hoping to go one step further this year and they still have enough talent in their squad to be considered one of the highest ranked contenders.
It has been a mixed year for Kenmare. They reached the final of the Club Championship but lost to the Crokes and last weekend they avoided relegation to Division 3 of the County League with victory on the final day over Kilcummin. With Kerry stars Stephen O’Brien and Seán O’Shea pulling the strings in their forward division, the 2016 Inter- m e d i a t e champs have what it takes to make life difficult for any team in the county. Verdict: South Kerry by three. South Kerry Last year: Runners-up (lost to Dr Crokes) Winners: 10 times (1955, 1956, 1958, 1981, 1982, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2015) Clubs: Derrynane, Dromid Pearses, Renard, Skellig Rangers, Sneem, St. Mary’s, St. Michael’s/Foilmore, Valentia, Waterville Tournament odds: 9/1
Kenmare Shamrocks Last year: Quarter-final (lost to Dr Crokes) Winners: Never Current form: LLLWW Tournament odds: 25/1
An Ghaeltacht back in the big time
Mid Kerry v An Ghaeltacht Saturday, August 25 at 6pm (Beaufort) The glory days of the early 2000s seem like a lifetime away but, after a spell out of the spotlight, An Ghaeltacht will once again have a chance to prove themselves at the top table of Kerry football. The Intermediate champions brought the Bishop Moynihan Cup back to Gallarus in 2001 and 2003 and starting this weekend they’ll be hoping to get back to winning ways at senior level.

An Ghaeltacht Last year: Intermediate champions (beat Templenoe) Winners: 2 times (2001, 2003) Form: WLLLW Tournament odds: 16/1 They’ll fancy their chances of getting a positive result in Round 1; opponents Mid Kerry lost both of their ties in last year’s championship and they’ve only won two championship games in the past three years. Verdict: An Ghaeltacht by one. Mid Kerry Last year: Round 2B (lost to East Kerry) Winners: 4 times (1967, 1971, 1992, 2008) Clubs: Beaufort, Cromane, Glenbeigh-Glencar, Keel, Laune Rangers, Milltown/Castlemaine Tournament odds: 16/1
St Brendan’s could cause some upsets
Qualification Round St Brendan’s v West Kerry Sunday, August 26 at 6.30pm (Austin Stack Park) Their record in the County Championship might tell a different tale but St Brendan’s are a team on the up. With young Na Gaeil stars Jack Barry, Ivan Parker and Stefan Okunbor in their ranks, the divisional outfit have the potential to cause one or two upsets in this year’s competition.
You would certainly expect them to advance past last year’s semi-finalists West Kerry, who will probably struggle to cope with the loss of their players from An Ghaeltacht. The winners of this game will play East Kerry in the first round proper next weekend. Verdict: St Brendan’s by five. St Brendan’s Last year: Round 3 (lost to East Kerry) Winners: Never Clubs: Ardfert, Churchill, John Mitchels, Na Gaeil, St Pat’s Blennerville Tournament odds: 25/1 West Kerry Last year: Semi-final (lost to Dr Crokes) Winners: Three times (1984, 1985, 1990) Clubs: Annascaul, Castlegregory, Lispole Tournament odds: 66/1X

F1 Batteries Recharged After Summer Break Formula 1 is back! Batteries well and truly recharged after the summer break and annual August shutdown, the teams and drivers return to action this weekend for the Belgian Grand Prix, staged at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit. A factory shutdown it may have been, but it was by no means a quiet summer on the news front with Daniel Ricciardo’s switch to Renault for 2019, Fernando Alonso’s F1 exit at the end of this season, plus Carlos Sainz’s move to replace him at McLaren and Pierre Gasly’s promotion to Red Bull all confirmed since the Hungarian Grand Prix. Speaking of Hungary, that race capped off what was a thoroughly-exciting and drama-filled opening half of the season, with Lewis Hamilton triumphing at the Hungaroring to extend his championship lead over
Sebastian Vettel to 24 points. And, after a well-deserved break, the Mercedes driver has the opportunity to extend that advantage this week at one of the most eagerly-anticipated races on the calendar, the Belgian GP. It won’t be easy with this Spa circuit, set in the picturesque Ardennes forest, often producing a shock or two.

Tanak Wins In Germany As Ogier Salvages 17 Points Ott Tanak clinched a second straight dominant rally win in Germany as Sebastien Ogier dropped just two points to World Rally Championship leader Thierry Neuville. It had looked like Germany would be a huge blow to Ogier’s title defence when he fell to ninth with a Saturday incident, but his recovery to fourth plus powerstage victory salvaged a 17-point score. While Neuville finished second, he played it safe on the powerstage and only took one bonus point - which meant Ogier’s powerstage win negated most of what Neuville had gained for the overall result and left the Belgian with a 23-point lead. Tanak took four bonus points for second on that stage plus his 25 for overall puts Tanak within 11 of Ogier and 34 of Neuville with four rounds to go. Citroen had another miserable event. Craig Breen was on the cusp of the podium battle before damaging his suspension by running wide late on Saturday, which left him seventh. His team-mate Mads Ostberg fell down the order with a power loss on Friday and made little progress before crashing on Sunday’s opener.
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy
With the rugby pre-season matches kicking off last weekend, Munster had a busy week with the European Cup fixtures being announced during the week. Munster To Face Exeter In European Opener place on January 19, however these two sides will meet this evening at Irish Independent Park in Cork in a pre-season friendly. Munster, meanwhile, host Gloucester at Thomond Park on Saturday, October 20 in the second round of the Heineken Cup, in what will be the first European Cup match broadcast free to air in Ireland in 12 years. This could pose a threat to filling Thomond
Park, the choice for fans being either watch it at Thomond Park or on TV3. Given the history between Munster and Gloucester, I would imagine a pretty full house at Thomond. Then, in mid-December, Munster first host Castres at Thomond and are away to the French outfit six days later. All in all some very mouth-watering matches in the Heineken Cup to come this season! In other news, Munster U-18 Clubs are
taking on their provincial rivals in the IRFU U-18 festival at UL this week. Last Saturday Munster beat Ulster in the opening round on a 32–10 scoreline with Killarney RFC U-18 player Richard Wallace making a huge impact, scoring a try in a scintillating individual performance. The club are very proud of Richard and want to wish him all the best in the remaining rounds of the festival.

A huge thank you to all the children for taking part and representing your area and County. Thank you to all the parents and volunteers who gave up their time to train, coach & manage teams. Community Games is a voluntary organisation and would not survive without all the volunteers and this is really appreciated at local level and again at county level. Being part of Community Games provides great opportunities for children to learn a sport and feel part of a team and make friends in various team and individual events. The 2018 National Final draws closure to a very successful year for Firies and it was wonderful to see such huge participation in so many events. Thank you to all the Committee who met up throughout the year and planned, advertised and co-ordinated events. It was all a team effort between committee, families and children and we look forward to starting a new season again in October.

Killarney Community Games Athletics enjoyed their most successful ever National Finals last weekend in the impressive U.L complex in Limerick. The 4 x 100 U14 boys relay squad of Teddy Muldoon, Conor Gammell, Karl McCarthy, Dara Looney and Alex Hennigan completed the remarkable feat of retaining the 4 x 100 title in an impressive fashion having won the heat, semi-final and final with some distance to spare. Dara Looney added the long jump gold medal with an impressive 5.18m jump in the final. Alex Hennigan won the bronze medal in the U14 hurdles final and Aaron O’ Sullivan got 7th place in the high jump final and is underage again next year and gained invaluable experience this year. Big thanks to Philip Gammell for managing, co-ordinating and training the squad. Congratulations also to neighbours Fossa U14 girls 4 x 100 relay team who captured the pewter medal for 4th place. This brings to an end a very impressive year for the area with success in a range of Sporting and Cultural activities. We thank the parents for their support and co-operation and hope they will help in the few fundraisers that fund the costs, insurance, levies etc that ensures the tradition of community games continues in the area. Well done to all and looking forward to 2019. Belated congratulations also to U12 boys soccer team and manger Ger Moynihan who captured the silver Munster medal back in July and despite missing a few players performed extremely well on the day just losing to Clare in a keenly contested final.

UNDER 13 GIRLS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL: For anyone who was fortunate enough to be in Lewis Rd. on Friday 10th of August, they were treated to a most exciting exhibition of football from Dr Crokes and Legion U 13 girls. A place in the final of the competition at stake, both teams showed no sign of nerves and played with great freedom. At various stages of the game each team ran into what looked like comfortable leads only to be eventually hauled in by the other. Unlike their first outing, the management were fortunate to be able to call on the services of Alicia Keane, Ella Barrett, Sadhbh Stack and Síofra Randles help the cause. The game came a little too soon for Sinead Byrne, whose hand injury is nearly cleared. 8 - 18 in scores is what the spectators on the night were treated to, and even though all the Crokes girls left everything on the field, the were to come up two points short at the final whistle. 4-08 to 4-10. The team and management wish Legion good luck in the final. CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to the Crokes B team on being promoted to Division 2 of the County League. What an achievement.

Killarney Legion
CO.LEAGUE RD 10: Killarney Legion 0-12 Beaufort 1-11. The final round of this years county league ended in a two point defeat for the seniors. Truth be told the performance was lethargic and disjointed and removed from the standard reached up to this point. Beaufort showed a dogged resilience and despite facing a stiffish breeze trailed by a manageable two points at the break. The Legion were bolstered by the welcome return of Brian Kelly in goal who brought off a number of top class saves and James O Donoghue who registered 7 pts. a number of which were of the highest quality. The critical moment from the Legions point of view came halfways through the second half when leading by two points the forwards created a one on one goal chance but unfortunately overelaboration saw the chance wasted due to a foul on the ball. It was to prove costly as Beaufort took full advantage and in less than a couple of minutes hit 1-1 to take control of the game. The Legion cut the deficit to a pt. but with time almost up they added a second to give them the win. Damien O Sullivan was well in control at fullback until he had to retire after injury and young Mike Pierce showed an urgency and purpose on the ball that sadly was missing from the home teams play. FIXTURE: Co. Championship, Rathmore V Killarney Legion, in Rathbeg at 6 p.m. All support welcome. LOTTO: Winning no’s - 8,15,23,26.No winner. Next weeks jackpot €12,300.
