Kerry Parents and Friends face difficult funding cuts A Kerry service which provides immeasurable support to its clients and their families faces a devastating €60,000 budget cut this year.
| By Sean Moriarty Kerry Parents and Friends Association (KPFA), who care for 270 special needs patients across Kerry - 115 of them based in the greater Killarney area - say they will have no choice but to cut back on services after the HSE made the announcement this week. Some difficult decisions will now have to be made by the service as they face cutting either wages of two staff members, hiring two mini buses, or 50 respite bed nights this year. KPFA were told earlier this week by the HSE that the funding cutback was part of a national cost cutting exercise. Between 2000 and 2013, the Kerry service suffered a range of funding cutbacks, so much so that its regulator informed them in 2014 that it would have to recruit more staff to meet the stand-
ards expected. This was followed by a few difficult years where KPFA operated at a loss, but looked like they were about to turn the corner this year - until the HSE dealt the funding blow earlier this week. “Just as we felt we were finally getting back on our feet we lose another €60,000,” KPFA Chief Executive, Marie Lenihan, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We will have no choice but to cut back on services. We are very sad and upset to have to do this. There were rumours about cutbacks but we really hoped it would not come to our door. The Government is at fault, they signed off the HSE budgets, and with politicians knocking at our doors these days, I would ask what are you going to do to meet the needs of people with disabilities nationwide.”

In a statement this week the HSE said that; ‘All health services are this year working on making savings, and have targets for these savings. Cork Kerry Community Healthcare has sought to discuss with KPFA how it can make sav-
ings without impacting services. Unfortunately this discussion has yet to take place, but we remain available to discuss this with KPFA. We have made it very clear that these savings must not impact on the people using KPFA's services’.
Fed up childcare staff to join national protest Owners of several busy preschools in Killarney are to take part in a national protest next month. The providers, who say they are not receiving a professional wage for all the extra Government work that they do, will join with others from across the country to protest in Dublin on Wednesday, February 5. They are calling on the Government to provide adequate funding as well as cut the six separate inspections per year down to one. Local operators, like all nationally, are also expected to adhere to Department of Education regulations - despite not being officially recognised by the State’s education body. The local childcare facilities are also regulated by Tulsa, DCYA, HSE, Pobal, and other Government agencies. Although the centres are in receipt of a weekly grant of around €64 per child, which boils down to €4.68 per child

per hour in their care, professionals are obliged to carry out additional paperwork like child assessments and they are not getting paid for this additional work. Terms of the grant mean they are not allowed charge additional fees to parents
to offset rising costs. “The current situation is not sustainable,” Rosemary Falvey, Manager of Bellview Woods Childcare in Ballydowney, told the Killarney Advertiser. Rising costs, particularly insurance which
has risen by 300 percent in the last year and is only available through one provider, means that the available grant goes nowhere near covering operating costs at child care centres. “We want recognition of our profession,” said Patricia Quigley of ScallyWags Preschool in Muckross. Highly qualified staff do not receive wages outside of school term-time unlike teachers in primary and post-primary schools. “If we are good enough to be regulated by the Department of Education and are good enough to meet their standards, then we are good enough to receive Department of Education wages and pay,” said Sharon O’Riordan of Little Explorers, which is based at Two-Mile School near Ballyhar. Parents locally are in support of the protest march according to several preschool operators The Killarney Advertiser spoke to.

Friends rally for baby with rare condition Friends of one Killorglin family, devastated to learn their child has a rare and possibly non-curable disease, are planning a big fundraiser to get the little girl to America. | By Michelle Crean
EXCLUSIVE
One-year-old Marley May was diagnosed with Leigh’s Disease, a rare mitochondrial illness, in November and faces a life expectancy of just three years. Feral Ashworth, who has been a close family friend for 20 years, has set up 'The Mitten Fund' and a GoFundMe page: ‘help marley may’ with a target of €50,000. Following a tractor fundraiser last weekend, Feral with the help of friends and family has organised a shave and wax event in The Fishery, Killorglin, tomorrow (Saturday) at 1pm. There, Feral and her sister Fern will shave their hair off, while Mark Davy and David Roche will have a leg wax and head shave. Donations will be accepted on the day and there’s also lots of raffle prizes up for grabs. Marley May, who has two older brothers, was born a happy healthy little girl and continued to be that way until things changed dramatically overnight, Feral explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “In November, Marley May’s parents received the devastating news that she is suffering from a rare mitochondrial disease which has no known cure,” she said. She added that there’s only been one

other case in Ireland, a little boy aged two, who sadly passed away. “It’s a very rare condition which a lot of people don’t know about. We’re trying to raise funds as the trial tests are in America." Treatments generally involve variations of vitamin and supplement therapies, often in a “cocktail” combination, and are only partially effective - if at all. The only hope the family has is a trial drug called EPI-743 EPI-743 that is based
on vitamin E. Treatment is a gruelling 13 months and is only being trialled in America. She added that it’s going to be a long road to try to get a trial here in Ireland, if at all, to prolong Marley May’s life expectancy. “I’m very close to the family, they have watched me grow up,” Feral said. “I want to do anything I possibly can to watch their kids grow up together. My hair will grow back, there’s no guarantee they’ll have the time with Marley May.”

Kerry farmers behind plan to save Air Ambulance | By Sean Moriarty Kerry farmers have backed a plan to keep the Irish Community Rapid Response(ICRR) Air Ambulance in the sky. The Millstreet, County Cork-based service could be grounded unless over €330,000 is found immediately to fund the charity service. Since its launch in July 2019 the service has flown in 250 missions but, without
any sort of Government support, it needs public funds to pay pilot wages, fuel and to cover other costs including its requirement to pay VAT to Revenue on all purchases. Earlier this month the charity put out an urgent plea for funds to keep the service operating. Last week, the charity raised €61,848 of a €400,000 target it set for a two-week GoFundMe campaign. As a result the service was cut from seven to five days to ensure it could carry on for
another six weeks, during which time it said it would try and come up with more money. Farmers in Kerry are being asked to donate €20 each to help run the service. The idea was first mooted at a directors’ meeting of Kerry Co-Op farmers in Tralee last week and since that meeting it has gathered momentum and could be expanded Munster-wide. Firies-based dairy farmer Tom Murphy is a member of the 23-strong Kerry Co-Op farmers board and he was first to put the
idea to his colleagues. “We have arranged a meeting with the Air Ambulance team in Tralee on February 6 where we are going to discuss a threeyear plan with them,” Mr Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “After that meeting we hope to come up with a plan to get all of the farmers in Kerry and Munster behind it.” There are around 3,300 members in the co-op and this does not include dairy farmers who supply other creameries or non-dairy farmers.

Sadness at death of Killarney's ‘Fr Tidy’ | By Michelle Crean There was a huge outpouring of sadness this week when news of the death of Archdeacon Michael Murphy became known.
KINDNESS: Seven-year-old Eabha McCarthy cut 14 inches off her hair to donate to charity.
Eabha’s new look will help sick children
Fr Michael, of Cathedral Place, Killarney and late of Annaghmore, Headford, was known locally as ‘Fr Tidy’. He passed away in Killarney Nursing Home on Saturday, aged in his nineties. He became an integral part of the community and was known to get his hands dirty as he mucked in with volunteers in Killarney’s clean-up efforts for the annual Tidy Towns competition. There was a large attendance at his removal in O'Shea's Funeral Home on Monday evening and again at his Funeral Mass in St Mary's Cathedral on Tuesday morning. “He retired to Killarney in 2005,” Mayor Michael Gleeson, a member of Killarney Looking Good (KLG) told the Killarney Advertiser. “Shortly thereafter he became a member of KLG and brought with him years of experience of Tidy Towns involvement as he had been central to the

success of Sneem and Kenmare. His motto which he proclaimed to one and all was ‘Just Do It’. That’s how he lived and worked with KLG and the Meitheal. He was seen regularly with his bare hands picking up rubbish here there and everywhere.” He was laid to rest in the church grounds, Holy Cross Church, Kenmare. Books of Condolence were opened at Kerry County Council offices in Killarney and Kenmare this week.
One little seven-year-old looks a lot different these days as she opted for the chop – cutting 14 inches from her long locks. | By Michelle Crean Kilcummin’s Eabha McCarthy headed to hairdresser Triona O’Shea in Park Road after being inspired by a similar story in the Killarney Advertiser late last year. Her hair has since been sent to the Rapunzel Foundation which makes wigs for sick children. Eabha’s parents Dale McCarthy and Ciara Moynihan said they are so proud of her act of kindness. “It was all her own idea,” Dale told the
Killarney Advertiser. “We’re very proud of her. Her hair was very long, and when she saw a girl donate her hair in the Killarney Advertiser before Christmas, she said she also wanted to help the sick children.” The First Class pupil who attends Anabla National School has since received some admiring looks at school. “She was very excited to cut it. She took the plaits into school and they all said her shorter hair suits her. She’s now going to try and grow it again for her communion next year.”

Many Kerry suppliers attended - but only a few got top honours - at the Irish Wedding of the Year Awards in Dublin on Monday night. | By Michelle Crean Local hairdresser Laura Kearney of Laura Lou Hair Stylist in Chapel Lane came away with the ‘Bridal Hair Stylist of the Year’ award, while Firies based Tara O’Donoghue Photography won ‘Creative Photographer of the Year’. The Irish Wedding Awards, which was held in the Crowne Plaza Dublin Airport, recognises and rewards those within the wedding industry that work towards making a special day perfect. “A past bride nominated me but I don’t know who,” Laura, who only opened her business a year ago, told the Killarney Advertiser. “There was 10 in my category and I was
Planning officials were reacting to complaints from local residents following repeated incidents of late-night noise and traffic near the racecourse. As a result, the popular Irish dance show was left without a home and faced an uncertain future unless something could be done. Earlier this month Celtic Steps owner, David Rae, confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that he himself would apply for permission to continue running the dance show at the venue. He is hopeful that by going alone he will be able to secure the future of the sixtime weekly summer time show.
Mr Rae remains tight-lipped on the outcome of his meeting with An Bord Pleanála, he did confirm to the Killarney Advertiser that a new planning application has been lodged. Although, Celtic Steps did release a statement on Tuesday. ‘With the 2020 season fast approaching, we are looking forward to reopening in the Killarney Racecourse and the Brandon Conference Centre, Tralee, for what will be the ninth season of Celtic Steps The Show,’ it said. ‘In the meantime, we would like to sincerely thank the local residents, business-people and close-knit community of Killarney, as well as other communities within County Kerry and worldwide, for your continued support of Celtic Steps The Show and your immense display of passion for the prosperity of Irish Culture, storytelling, music and dance’. Celtic Steps is also pushing on with its recruitment drive for its 2020 summer season both for its Tralee and Killarney shows.
the only one from Munster. I wasn’t expecting it and I’m still getting over the shock.” Tara added that to be nominated and then to win a national award is incredible. “We are absolutely thrilled,” Tara said. “We had decided to attend the awards ceremony as there were a great bunch of Kerry suppliers nominated in various categories and we thought it would be a great night to support and show off the talent we have here in Kerry! Little did we know that we would be bringing an award back with us! We would like to say a huge thank you to all our past, present and future couples who have made this possible. What a great way to kick off 2020!”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
The all-male TV debate was dire and uninspiring
Dog fouling is the big one in Dublin, and the retirement of politicians is even wider spread! I spoke to a female councillor this week who turned down the chance to run for her party because Dublin is simply too far. She has a young family and a home. I have previously asked in this column why we need Leinster House at all. It is essentially a construct of the 19th century, designed for the horse and carriage, and bears little relevance for today’s digital age. Worse, it is an ivory tower. Vast sums are going into its printer alone in this age of climate consciousness. Its chamber is empty most of the time and they all press each other’s buttons anyway when it comes to votes. TDs should stay at the coalface of their constituency, remain grounded, caucus electronically, vote electronically and not have to travel out of their county headquarters apart from assemblies a few times a year, I would suggest. Having to turn up in Dublin means they spend too much time cooped up in cars and in the sheltered Dáil. They should have offices in county buildings. This arrangement would benefit counties like Kerry and Donegal which are far from Dublin, and it would also reduce travel expenses.
A BAD START
It has been a bad start for the two main parties. The first TV all-male debate on Wednesday was diatribe.
Dire, uninspiring and won by Leo, if only because he has more hair and a deeper voice and is easier on the eye - an important consideration for the TV age. Micheál Martin played the victim on the debate. This will not wash when the reality is most people in this country 12 years after the crash are victims of Fianna Fáil. “Do we want to have to look and listen at Micheál and people like him unsmiling for the next five years?,” I asked myself. One thing the debate completely lacked for me, having watched Boris, was any spark of humour. But that is because these guys have none. Meanwhile Sinn Fein have had the big ideas of the week. They have led the charge on insurance and on the pensions for the older people, and the polls show it. They have also led on housing with rent freezes for the young, and on health I was much taken with their two free GP visits a year. Now we have FG talking about “a transition pension”. Well, well! Wasn’t it Enda Kenny’s Government who paid off all the guards and teachers and nurses at around 55, left the schools and garda stations and hospitals in a mess ? One law for the private sector, work till you drop, under the plans by the old boys of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. Labour’s old friends the trade unions are cawing now, but where were the unions when the pension age was increased and women's
“
One thing the debate completely lacked for me, having watched Boris, was any spark of humour. But that is because these guys have none.
“
Apart from the clear inequality in pensions, between the private sector and public sector workers, and the blackguardism of throwing hard working private sector people on the dole and forcing them into the lie of pretending they are available for work, two issues have dominated the political week.
pensions destroyed by Brendan Howlin and Joan Burton and co? When it comes to bread and butter and worker’s protection the trade unions in this country have double standards and are interested only in the public sector giving the lie to the claim that all people are equal in this State.
DOUBLE STANDARDS
Do we have double standards too when it comes to Sinn Fein in this country? We find it difficult to trust them because of their recent past. At the same time our established parties jostle for the credit for ambushes of one hundred years ago and are even celebrating the Black and Tans! I have to say the 12-point lead by Fianna Fáil is far from a good start for them. It has puffed them up, but it is the worst start possible in my view, for complex reasons. The prospect of a landslide for the party that broke the country is downright frightening. That the crowd who destroyed this country and sat back while Fine Gael finished us off is too much for the likes of myself. So not a good start for either party this week. Let’s see what next week brings - will the shine go off the Shinners?
Dog fouling is replacing horse dung! Dog fouling is of great concern in Dublin it has emerged. I was reminded of 20 years ago when I put my head over the parapet and began highlighting the awful horse dung issue in Killarney. It was mostly women - Cllr Sheila Casey and the Soroptimists
and a teacher in Holy Cross - who led the charge. The idea of horse nappies was stoutly resisted by the jarveys and some of their supporters. People woke up to it though and they well remember now how bad it was trying to take a simple walk with a child
or ride a bike even on the Muckross Road when you were in danger of being drowned in dung. Now there is a real danger dog fouling is replacing horse dung. There is an astonishing amount of dogs in this town and I see them doing their business all

New design for Lissivigeen Muckross link Some €500,000 has been allocated for the Farranfore Killarney National Road Scheme for design, and thanks to Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan’s insistence most of it will go to the Lissivigeen Muckross link. Traffic is just "crazy" in Killarney, and The Park Road area had to be speeded up too, Cllr O'Callaghan told Moira Murrell, CEO of Kerry County Council, on Monday last at Aras an Chontae. “We are all agreed traffic is a significant problem in Killarney,” Ms Murrell said. And when Cllr Botty reminded her that the plans went on display when he was “a young fella” and surely the land had not moved, Ms Murrell agreed, but said new environmental and other directives had come in since then. There was therefore a need for a new design to be put before the public. “We have to go back to go forward,” Ms Murrell said. The plans will be further detailed in a report to come before the Council in May. We will remind Cllr Botty to keep the pressure on.
over the National Park without a pooper or a scooper in sight. Worse, huge dogs are off the lead in the Blue Pool area regularly. It might be a sobering reflection for those people with pooches to reflect on a court case I attended this week in Tralee where a woman will have to pay €15,600 plus Circuit Court costs for her Alsatian getting out onto the public road and mauling a woman’s arm.

Hugh O’Flaherty Society to scale down activities The Hugh O’Flaherty Humanitarian Award will not be presented in 2020 after members decided to greatly reduce its activities in the town. | By Sean Moriarty The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society was founded by the Killarney Chamber in 2008. Its key objectives at the time were to erect a permanent memorial in Killarney town centre, present an annual award in his name and to increase awareness of his humanitarian work through school
programmes and student projects. On the 50th anniversary of his death, October 30, 2013 a bronze memorial was unveiled on Mission Road in Killarney fulfilling the committee’s first objective. The annual humanitarian award was first presented in 2009 and last year was given to members of the Irish Defence
Forces in recognition of their 60 years of peacekeeping humanitarian missions with the United Nations. The Society confirmed this week that last year’s award will be the last to be presented for the foreseeable future. “Following the 2018 Memorial Weekend which marked a decade of Humanitarian Awards, the Society Committee met in early 2019 to review its activities and for a number of reasons such as resources, costs and logistics, a decision was taken to reduce the future Programme of Activities after the 2019 Humanitarian
Award Ceremony,” Chairperson of the Society, Jerry O’Grady, said. However, the Society will continue to engage with local schools and students. “For the foreseeable future the Memorial Society will be confining its activities to continued interaction with primary schools in terms of competitions and, with students at second and third levels as a resource for projects and dissertations etc.,” he added. “Also, we will continue to promote the Monsignor's story through the media and the arts. From our extensive family and society archives, we have already helped with the publishing of a number of books and articles, and the creation of theatre and TV productions, including Donal Courtney’s acclaimed drama ‘God Has No Country’.” Jerry confirmed that award-winning author Joseph O'Connor’s next novel will focus on Monsignor O'Flaherty and the Rome Escape Line.
New spring festival for Killarney town A new festival aimed at shortening the winter and encouraging people to enjoy the great Killarney outdoors has been launched. The inaugural Wander Wild Festival, which will run from March 27-29 inclusive, will have a spectacular opening equinox parade through the streets will offer an inside glimpse of what Killarney is all about with a springtime celebration of the great outdoors. Guest speakers lined up will include writer and storyteller Michael Harding who will explore rituals, the ocean, and soul, while ultra-athlete Shane Finn, who completed 24 marathons in 24 days and cycled and ran across America in 36 days,
will share his experiences with special guests in a live podcast. Film will feature prominently throughout the festival with screenings of several highly regarded productions with a sustainability, adventure or real-life drama theme including ‘The Lost Skytrain’, a documentary about the disappearance in 1943 of a WW2 Douglas C-47 plane that was later discovered, with the bodies of five men, by two local farmers on Kerry’s McGillycuddy Reeks. “The Wander Wild Festival is a really fantastic opportunity for people to get away for a few days, sample this awe-inspiring area and enjoy this spectacle of outdoor-related festival events,” said organising committee Chairman Pat Chawke.

rate events to keep them challenged and busy with a parkrun and a Hardman 10k on the agenda. Live music and entertainment will fill the streets and the public houses and visitors can sample an authentic taste of Kerry food and drink along the designated taster trails.

Family overwhelmed by community support | By Sean Moriarty The wife of a Firies GAA player who lost his leg in a work-related accident has described the support their family has received from the local community as “outstanding” and “overwhelming”.
Firies hub to connect food producers with Killarney hotels Kerry artisan food producers will have a new direct link to the hotels of Killarney - thanks to the €1.15 million expansion of the Kerry Food Hub in Firies. | By Sean Moriarty Earlier this month the Kerry Food Hub was allocated the funding from Enterprise Ireland’s Regional Enterprise Development Fund, which will go towards six new food preparation units. The funding will also help create a new online e-commerce marketplace that is specifically designed to connect both the hub-based and regional artisan suppliers to key hotel buyers in Killarney. The Kerry Branch of the Irish Hoteliers Federation (IHF) met a number of times with the Firies Food Hub ahead of their application for this funding. IHF assisted them in honing their product and advised on the route into the
back doors of Kerry’s commercial kitchens. “We are thrilled to see this commitment come to fruition in such a rewarding way for the Food Hub,” Bernadette Randles, Chair of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, told the Killarney Advertiser. “The Kerry Hoteliers are always delighted to see top quality food products coming onto the market and welcome the opportunity to offer locally produced foods to our guests. Every head chef relishes the chance to showcase a Local Food Hero on a plate. The Irish food experience has gone from strength to strength in recent years and we look forward to many more local food heroes emerging with the aid of this funding.”
Meet your local garda | By Sean Moriarty The people of Killarney will be given the opportunity to meet and greet local gardai next week. The Killarney event, which will take place at 12 noon at the Heights Hotel on January 31, is one of four such forums happening at the same time in Kerry. Local Gardaí, IFA branch representatives and representatives from community groups involved in the National Rural Safety Forum, will engage with the local community in Tralee, Killarney, Listowel and Cahersiveen.
It is an opportunity for the local community to get to know their local Gardaí and local community representatives. “An Garda Síochána is delighted to partner with our key stakeholders in the National Rural Safety Forum in organising a National Community Engagement Day. This event will provide an opportunity for communities across Ireland to meet and become familiar with their local Gardaí and other Community Organisation representatives,” said Assistant Commissioner Orla McPartlin, Garda Community Relations Bureau.
A fundraising drive to help Seamus O’Brien, a former a Firies Gaelic footballer, has raised over €20,000. The 49-year-old suffered the injury while working on a construction site in County Cork in February 2018. His left leg was amputated in November last year after undergoing seven unsuccessful operations. Since his accident, the self-employed carpenter, who is a father of four teenagers, has been unable to work. That’s left his wife Ruth, a nurse, as the family’s only wage-earner, and placed additional stress on their finances. In a bid to help, Firies GAA teamed up
with his former London GAA Club, the Kingdom Kerry Gaels and his wife’s Seneschalstown Club in County Meath to raise money to pay for three prosthetic legs, to enable Seamus to walk again. “It is overwhelming, we did not expect this kind of support,” Ruth told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The community spirit, in London, Kerry and Meath, has been outstanding. His former club in London initiated the fundraising and they shared it out to his clubs at home.” Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and adjustments to the family’s house will incur even further costs. Seamus is currently recovering at home but must attend weekly out-patient clinics in Cork and Dublin hospitals. He travels by train adding a further financial burden to the family. To donate to the Kingdom Kerry Gaels’ GoFundMe page go to: GoFundMe: Seamus O’Brien Support Fund.
FUNDS: A fundraising drive to help Seamus O’Brien, a former a Firies Gaelic footballer, has raised over €20,000.
Solution close for notorious Madam’s Hill black spot | By Sean Moriarty Cllr Brendan Cronin insists that the construction of a roundabout at the junction of Madam’s Hill and the Tralee Road at Coolcorcoran is the only solution to traffic congestion in the area. The notorious traffic blackspot, especially during the morning rush, is a source of much frustration for local motorists. Traffic entering Killarney from the Tralee side backs up as far as the Kilcummin junction resulting in just over 1.3km of a queue every morning making it nearly impossible for traffic from Madam’s Hill to join the main road. Just before Christmas, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) announced that
€250k was being made available to fund works at the junction. Kerry County Council confirmed at a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting that various designs were under consideration before construction could start. “Junction options including roundabouts have been developed but approach gradients are making Technical Standard Compliance difficult for some options,” said Kerry County Council’s Charlie O’Sullivan of the Roads, Transport and Marine Directorate. In November 2016, residents from Aghadoe, Barleymount, and Ballyhar brought a deputation to the Council to outline their frustration in relation to traffic issues at the junction. Cronin said: “I am backing a roundabout and won’t be backing anything else."

HEALTH & FITNESS Brexit main focus
Advice - By Brian Foley
Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
Being consistent with your fitness Once you’ve found a great fitness programme that is fun, safe and effective, the next area to focus on is your ability to be consistent. For example, if you are excited to start something new and you spend the next month totally focused on your goal each day, but only manage to focus for a couple weeks, then lose your motivation and you’ll likely not see great results. If you focus for six weeks, you may see some results, but not many that will stick with you over time. Two months - you’re getting closer - but you’ll still have an easier time letting go of your new habits than keeping them. In our experience, from a fitness and nutrition standpoint, ninety to one hundred days is around the minimum time to commit to something to not only see substantial change, but at that one hundred day mark, it seems those who can get there have a drastically easier time keeping their good new habits and making them part of their life. There are quite a few statistics out there backing up a longer timeline for successful habit creation. At Activate, we’ve designed our first one hundred days with new clients very specifically to help them reach that inflection point. We have multiple accountability points and systems, as well as quite a few ways to bring our clients into a healthy lifestyle. They’ll not only see success but
will enjoy and hold on to it for a lifetime. For our daily lives, if you sit down and think about it, we’re defined by many different daily habits. These include getting up at a certain time each time, when we eat dinner, what books we read, TV we watch, people we eat lunch with, times we check our email, when we work, and the list goes on. What’s neat about habits is the fact that you can modify them. If you have something you normally do, scrolling Facebook while you eat lunch by yourself, you can easily replace this with having a good conversation with your co-workers. It takes making the effort to invite others to lunch, but after a while, it’ll be a positive habit in your life and a whole lot more valuable than Facebook! Once you have adjusted or created a habit, it is far easier to stick to it. If it’s reading a few minutes early in the morning before work, making a point to have a date night once a week with your significant other, or working out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, fight to be as consistent as you can, no matter how you feel, for the first two to three months. After that you’ll find these things simply become part of your life and are much easier to continue doing. It may take some work, calendar reminders, friends dragging you to the gym or encouraging you for a bit, but put in the effort and you’ll enjoy the benefits for a long time.
of today’s Killarney Economic Forum
Economic, civic and political leaders from Ireland, the UK and Europe, today (Friday) gathered at The Brehon Hotel for the third annual Killarney Economic Conference. Brexit was one of the key topics on the agenda, with discussions based on its impact on Northern Ireland and Ireland’s economic and diplomatic relationship with Germany in a post-Brexit world. Former Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, reflected on the Good Friday Agreement and the likely impact of Brexit on the future of Northern Ireland. The former Fianna Fáil leader also shared his views on the way forward for the North-South relationship. Green Party leader Eamonn Ryan took time out from the campaign trail to join in the debate and also in attendance was Carwyn Jones, the former First Minister of Wales. The one-day conference was preceded by a special interview with Mike Russell, Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Constitutional Affairs and Government Business, last night (Thursday). The high-profile event is sponsored by Kerry County Council. “The event has become an important opportunity for experts to engage on important issues,” Kerry County Council’s Chief Executive, Moira Murrell, said. Speakers lined up to discuss the key issues affecting rural development include Green Party leader Eamonn Ryan,

Kerry Airport announces extra Manchester route Ryanair has this week confirmed a new route to Manchester and plans to increase the frequency of its Kerry-Alicante route this summer. The new Manchester route will operate twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays from March 29. And passengers planning a trip to Spain’s sunny Costa Blanca will have three flights to choose from in June, July and August – a 50 percent increase on 2019 – in addition to the scheduled flights during April, May, September and October. “We have worked closely with Ryanair to secure this important new route which we believe will be a success and a welcome addition to our schedule of flights,” Kerry Airport CEO, John Mulhern, said. “Manchester has long been the most sought-after destination among passengers and the introduction of the new
service between Kerry and Manchester heading into the summer season will have a positive economic impact on a range of sectors in the county.” Kerry Airport has also reported an increase of 1.2 percent in passenger numbers in 2019 compared to 2018 - despite some challenging conditions. “Nearly 370,000 passengers travelled through Kerry Airport in 2019 which represents an increase of almost 4,500 passengers,” he said. “There was growth of one percent on our two London routes in defiance of being under the Brexit cloud throughout the year.” Work on securing additional new routes is on-going with Kerry Airport’s airline partners, Kerry County Council, Tourism Ireland and the tourism organisations in Kerry, he added.

More employers join hotel recruitment event An additional three hotel chains have become involved in the second South Kerry Development Partnership organised Hotel Recruitment Event taking place on Thursday, February 6. Last year’s event resulted in almost 40 percent of the potential employees who attended the event secure long term employment as a result. The Europe Group, the Randles Hotel Group and the O’Donoghue Ring Hotels have now joined with The Great Southern Killarney, The Cahernane, The Gleneagle Group, Muckross Park Hotel, the Aghadoe Heights Hotel, The Killarney Park and The Lake Hotel for the event which seeks to match employees with vacancies in the sector through a more informal process. SKDP Enterprise Officer Joanne Griffin, who organises the event, said she was delighted to have the additional employers involved and it helps to make the event even more attractive to potential employees. “The event gives potential employees the chance to meet with a large number of employers and enables both the em-
ployees and potential employers to get to know each other in advance of entering into a formal work situation,” Joanne said. “It also offers people who may not have worked in the hotel sector before the chance to see what opportunities exist for them.” She also pointed out that people do not have to have previous hotel experience to get involved with the event - they just need to have an interest in taking up a role in the sector. While the event is free to attend, people must register in advance in order to ensure everyone who wants to attend can be catered for. Joanne added that the due to demand, the closing date has been extended. To register simply contact Joanne Griffin by e-mail at jgriffin@ skdp.net or 066 9761615 before Tuesday, February 4.

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Time to start thinking about your vegetable garden The end of January is a great time to start thinking about the vegetable garden, and it’s the best time to plan it! There is an amazing range of seed available to the vegetable gardener, but often we are a little overeager when it comes to sowing. Here in Kerry we tend to have a wetter-winter and spring than in most of England. Bear in mind that most seed companies are based in the UK and will give sowing times for their country on the back of the packets. For most outdoor sowing I would not recommend earlier than late April/May, but if you have a glasshouse or polytunnel you can start much earlier. Also, heated propagators are a super investment. Seeds need the heat to germinate, however they need very little heat when growing. Do ensure the seedlings are inside, getting as much light as possible, and are frost free. Onion seeds can be sown at the end of January, giving the enthusiast a lot more choice in varieties. Onions grown from seed are not as inclined to bolt as those grown from sets, though the whole process is a little more finnicky! Garlic can still be planted at this time of year, varieties such as ‘Solent Wight’ and ‘Tuscany
Wight’ are still available. Garlic does not like soil which is too acidic and as a rule of thumb here in Kerry adding calcified seaweed or lime is advisable. Seed potatoes are also available at the moment. For those new to potato growing, it is one of the most satisfying crops to start with. I tend to grow potatoes in a new patch of garden each year. I start by digging in a good amount of well-rotted manure early in January, then covering the soil with polythene so that it both warms up and remains weed free. ‘Chitting’ refers to the starting off of potatoes out of the ground in the aforementioned egg cartons or cardboard boxes, in a bright, cool room until the ground is warm enough for planting, usually around St Patrick’s Day. Most seed potatoes have clearly discernible eyes which are little buds. These should be placed facing up, so that growth can take place in one direction.

KILLARNEY ADVERTISER PROFILES
GENERAL ELECTION
2020
YOUR KERRY Saturday, February the 8 is voting day in the upcoming General Election – the day you decide who runs the country - and the Killarney Advertiser is taking a look at the 13 candidates who have declared themselves in the running. From the pensions crisis to homelessness, healthcare and exorbitant insurance rates, local issues such as gridlock traffic in Killarney town, rent, housing and employment – there’s a lot of talk about what they’ll do for the town. And with just over two weeks left for you to make up your mind – each one is planning to knock on your door looking for a number 1 vote – so we asked them what their plans are for the Killarney area and surrounds, if elected. Here are your candidates: Deputy Brendan Griffin from Castlemaine and Cllr Mike Kennelly from Listowel are running for Fine Gael. There are three Fianna Fáil candidates; Deputy John Brassil from Ballyheigue, Cllr Norma Moriarty from Waterville, and Norma Foley from Tralee. Deputies Michael and Danny Healy-Rae from Kilgarvan are running again as Independents, Sinn Fein are running one Kerry candidate Cllr Pa Daly from Tralee, while Cleo Murphy from Kenmare will run for The Green Party. Aontú have Sonny Foran from Causeway, while John Bowler from Camp is running for the Irish Freedom Party. Tralee’s Ted Cronin is running for the Party For Animal Welfare, while Sean O’Leary from Cork is also set to stand for Kerry, and is running in five Cork and five Dublin constituencies. The Labour Party have no-one running this time round.

O’Leary ADDRESS: Cork PARTY: Non Party One of the many reasons in going for election is to highlight that if we look after the national issues like housing, health, homelessness and the environment in tandem with local issues that our country, including beautiful Killarney, will be an attractive place for our young people to settle down and rare families. In that regard I have no confidence in our present leadership. For example, I fear that two of my six children working in the medical area will leave at a great loss to the country.

I committed to open an office in Killarney prior to the General Election in 2016 if I was elected. I was elected, and I stuck to that promise. I have provided an office at Fairhill for the past four years with a constituency secretary, a Killarney native. Lynda Horgan is experienced and well in tune with the issues that affect Killarney and its surrounds. I am as much concerned with those issues as I am with issues facing all other parts of the county and the country at large.
If elected I will offer the people of Killarney and its environs the very same thing I will be offering all in County Kerry; a commitment to solution oriented politics. No clap trap or empty promises, no pretence that there are quick fixes to our health service or housing crisis. Yet we must listen to those in the frontline and for example stop issuing free medical cards to our healthiest cohort, which worsens the burden on GPs. We can build council estates on state owned land and ensure they are properly serviced to become vibrant communities. Incentivise business and free them from overly restrictive and un-necessary red tape. Pay farmers to be custodians of the land and incentivise best practice in farming in an environmentally sustainable way.
Fianna Fáil are the only political organisation providing a full-time office, full-time representation at both local and national level in Killarney, and I commit to providing the same if re-elected on February 8.

I was totally opposed to the increase in the VAT rate and I believe that this should be looked at again to reduce it as it would help our tourism capital and the people that work in the sector. I believe that a ring road for Killarney is essential linking outer Lissivigeen to the Farranfore Road with regard to reducing congestion, and additional car parking within the town has to be provided. The current Government have not done enough with regard to attracting jobs and industry to our town which would obviously directly positively impact on its environs if they were to do so. Our National Park needs protection. It needs continuous maintenance and attention and I believe not enough resources are been put into this, and locals would also agree with this.
Kerry needs a fresh start and I am asking you for your number one vote in order to help achieve this.
Firstly, Killarney voters should know that I immigrated to Ireland from Southern California where, in addition to operating an award-winning beach pub for 25 years, I also served two terms as City Council member. Since, like Killarney, Hermosa Beach is heavily dependent on tourism, I understand the utmost importance of attracting international tourism. The majority of those tourists come to see real “Ireland”, so promoting events that highlight Irish culture, customs and traditions is of utmost importance. Additionally, reinvigorating life in rural Ireland has to be a priority, including focusing on developing a high quality, sustainable and profitable agricultural sector.
I have the experience required to serve the people of Kerry with 10 years working solely as a public representative. I will make the following my priority to deliver for the people of Killarney in relation to Kilcummin Sewage Scheme, the Outer Ring Road and traffic relief on Park Road, broadband, housing for all, healthcare, tourism, farming and agricultural issues including impact of Brexit, local policing and tackling issues of anti-social behaviour, planning including provision of facilities for future industrial development, improvements in recreation and sporting facilities.

Sinn Féin is the only party offering real solutions to give workers and families in Killarney and Kerry a break. We are offering real solutions to the crises in housing and our health services. We are also the only major party who have committed to reversing the planned Pension Age increase. Pearse Doherty has proven that we will take on the insurance industry to end the rip off motorists and small businesses. We will give workers in Killarney a break by removing the USC from the first €30,000 you earn. These are just some of the reasons why I am asking for your number 1 vote.
A number of key priorities for the Killarney area includes; secure funding for the Lissivigeen to Farranfore bypass and the link between the Muckross road and the Cork road, the development of the Sara Lee site to be prioritised and recognised as a key economic driver and benefit to the people of Killarney, a high quality assessable health service to include the delivery of a standalone Primary Care Centre which incorporates all of the key services on a single site including diagnostics, increase funding for the development and enhancement of the National Park, develop Killarney and Kerry as an age and disability friendly environment, grow existing tourism products and support new initiatives including the development of local walkways and cycling infrastructure.
Educate schoolkids on animal care and rights, end all animal cruelty and ban all bloodsports. Educate people on the importance and role of animals towards our mental and physical health. More use of animal therapy for ADHD, autism, depression, loneliness, schools, prisons, etc. Pets to be allowed visit care homes, hospitals and not be banned from houses or flats. Educate people on moving to a plant based diet for health and the environment. Make Killarney town centre and National Park a smoke free zone. There are 12,000 empty houses lying idle in Kerry, many in Killarney. Use them for people on waiting lists. Close the existing Killarney bypass and construct a safer one and continue research on wind generated energy.

If re-elected, I will continue to seek additional funding for home help and additional hospital beds, increase the supply of social and affordable housing, continue the bus service to Belfast that I initiated for cataract, hip and knee procedures, progress the Killarney bypass which is at design stage, ensure Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme is not delayed further so the road can be resurfaced, prevent the sale of St Finan’s to private interests, fight against the unfair increase in the pension age, remove the 4.5 percent VAT increase, fight against the massive increase in insurance, support farming families, increase parking in Killarney, and fight against Carbon tax.
Sonny Foran represented Aontú in the Local Election in May and garnered an impressive 800 votes following a three-week campaign. He is proud to stand on the Aontú pillars of Life, Unity and Economic Justice, and has a proven track record of hard work and dedication, both in business and in community activism. He has been very much to the fore in highlighting the scourge of drugs and anti-social behaviour that have blighted communities. If elected to the Dáil, he will continue to be a tireless worker for all of the people all of the time. Sonny is a man of action and believes in getting the job done.
Killarney, like many towns, is suffering huge traffic congestion. Such congestion has a particularly negative effect on a tourist town. To alleviate it we need a vastly improved Local Link service for those coming in from outside, better shuttle services for visitors, and more cycle lanes for town residents. The Green Party believes 20 percent of the capital transport budget should go on cycling and walking infrastructure while the remaining 80 percent should be spent in a 2:1 ration on public transport and roads respectively. Improving public transport and active transport is one of my top priorities.
Chambers plan pre-election debate Gleeson decides not to run in General Election | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Mayor Cllr Michael Gleeson has decided not contest next month’s General Election. The Kerry Independent Alliance councillor remained undecided until this week. He would have been the only Killarney resident to contest the Kerry constituency and had until 12 noon Wednesday to lodge his application. His party held its AGM in Killarney on Thursday night last week where he discussed the idea with colleagues. Even after the meeting he was still very much undecided, issues like the vast geographical area of the county that needs to be canvassed, a small team that worked very hard in May when he was elected onto Kerry County Council would have to come out in force again, his refusal to
canvas rural houses after dark and family issues all came into his decision making process. Mayor Gleeson confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday) that he will not put his name on the ballot sheet. “I want to acknowledge the support of the members of Kerry Independent Alliance and indeed the wider community, and I am sorry if I disappointed them by not running but decisions had to be made,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Being the Mayor of Killarney is hugely important to me and I look forward to bringing the many projects that I have started by the Killarney Municipal District to fruition.” Attention will now refocus on local politics with the Kerry Independent Alliance’s annual church gate collection set to take place this coming weekend.
Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Tralee Chamber Alliance, in association with Radio Kerry, will broadcast live from The Rose Hotel, Tralee on February 4 next. The Kerry Today show will be interviewing the Kerry Candidates in this year's General Election, and presenting questions submitted by the businesses of Kerry, along with key issues facing the Kerry electorate.
If you wish to attend the live forum, with an opportunity to meet the candidates, you can register on www. eventbrite.ie by searching: 20kerry-election-forum-tickets, where you will also find a link to submit any questions. This event is co-hosted jointly by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Tralee Chamber Alliance - working together to support businesses in Kerry.
Count Centre in Killarney Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre has been selected as The Kerry Count Centre for the upcoming General Election. The Sports Hall will be closed for normal public use from Thursday, February 6 until Tuesday morning, February 11. “It is hoped that the hall will be back to normal use on Tuesday evening of February 11, however this depends on a number of factors such as a potential recount ,” Deputy Manager, Daniel O’Donoghue, said. “We thank our clubs and sports hall users for their
support. The rest of the centre will be open as normal on Thursday Febraury 6, Friday 7 and Saturday 8, he added. “Our gym, pool, fitness classes and swim lessons will run as normal with no disruptions.” Unfortunately the entire centre will be closed to members and Pay As You Go customers for normal use on Sunday, February 9 and Monday 10 to facilitate the count. “Again we thank everyone for their support and look forward to being The Count Centre for another year.”

This debate was so terrible. I turned off the Utd match (which was equally as bad) to watch it. Lasted 2 minutes and actually turned it back to the match. The bonus being it made the match watchable again.
| By Sean Moriarty “Lisa is always in good form, she is very good with the staff and very good with customers and very good at getting the place organised,” said the hotel’s duty manager Michael Cronin, who was given an ambassador award. “I was taken by surprise when they gave me the award.” Other award winners on the night included John Harrington who took
home the ‘Team Player Award’, and Racheal Leech ‘Constant Contributor Award’. Nuala Doolan was named as the ‘Guests’ Choice’ award winner while Christine Maudsley was named as ‘Best Newcomer’ and Karoline Rus was named as a ‘Positive Influencer’. Jelena Bivka received a special honour marking 15 years of service at the hotel.
DEBORAH O'CONNELL O'KEEFFE
All parties should have been invited. These two are useless.
MARK CAREY
How can it be fair when the third largest party, Sinn Fein aren’t invited. It’s not like their poling numbers are very far off these two. We’re not a 2 party state, it’s time people remember that and vote that way
PATRICIA HAUGHTON
People should have watched the documentary on TG4 aired at the time of the debate, a real insight to the country's problems with homeless and mental health, switching between the two channels, showed how little either party know or care!!

Great atmosphere at Aaron’s 21st Aaron Fleming is better known as one of the bartenders at the famous Celtic Whiskey Bar and Larder on New Street - so it was no surprise that his 21st birthday party was attended by other well-known faces from the hospitality industry. Aaron, who is originally from Tralee, chose the Killarney Avenue Hotel as his preferred venue when it came to celebrating his big birthday as he has strong family ties to the popular hotel. “Over the years, if the Fleming family had an occasion it was nearly always celebrated in The Avenue,” he said. “I know a lot of people in the industry in Killarney, so a lot of chefs, bar tenders and waiters from other bars and restaurants came along to celebrate.” Aaron celebrated on the night with his
father Cummian Fleming and his mother Mary Morahan. His brother Daniel and his fiancé Aileen made the trip over from Tralee to join the celebrations as did his uncle Christopher Condon who came down from Dublin. His girlfriend, Gráinne Murphy, and her family from Scartaglin were also among the guests. “It was a great night of craic,” he said. “There was a great atmosphere in the hotel, we were well looked after.”

Threshold By Rob Doyle RELEASED: JANUARY 23
Expect musical episodes as one of the trailers suggest, which means we’re getting more closely aligned with Riverdale, another fan favourite. Starring Gavin Leatherwood, Lachlan Watson, Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez (Madame Satan), Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis and Chance Perdomo.

The narrator of Rob Doyle’s ‘Threshold’ has spent the last two decades travelling, writing, and imbibing drugs and literature in equal measure, funded by brief periods of employment in Dublin. Now, stranded between reckless youth and middle age, his travels to far-flung places have acquired new purpose; to aid the contemporary artist’s search for universal truth. Following Doyle from Buddhism to the brink of madness, ‘Threshold’ immerses us in the club-drug communalism of the Berlin underworld, the graves of myth-chasing artists in Paris, and the shattering and world-rebuilding revelations brought on by the psychedelic DMT. Doyle exists in a lineage of writer-characters, exploring forms between theory and autobiography that
are both insightful and provocative. Rob Doyle is an Irish author whose previous books include, ‘Here are the Young Men’ and ‘This is the Rirual’.

Andy Shauf 'The Neon Skyline’ The new album dropped today early in the morning, January 24. Comprising of 11 tracks this unique artist Shauf chose to start each composition on guitar instead of his usual piano. Though pairing down his massive body of work to a single album's worth of material was a challenge for Shauf, the final track list is seamless and fully formed. Shauf makes music that explores how easy it is to find yourself in familiar patterns and repeat the same mistakes of

Would going to another bar cheer my friend up?” The songs on ‘The Neon Skyline’ ultimately take solace in accepting that life goes on and things will be okay. ‘Things I Do’ track number 5 is a must hear which examines the dissolution of the narrator's past relationship over tense and jazz-minded instrumentation.

Niall Quinn appointed to FAI board Republic of Ireland hero Niall Quinn has been appointed Deputy Chief Executive of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).
China’s Coronavirus thought to be caused by infected bats 17 deaths have been reported and 547 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in China – and it’s thought that it originated from bats. On December 31, a new strain of the virus was reported in Wuhan, China suspected to have originated from bats, a known delicacy in the country. As of now Wuhan, a Chinese city of 11 million people, has temporarily shut down its public transport as it tries to stop the outbreak of the virus. Chinese officials said the country was now at the "most critical stage" of pre-

vention and control. "Basically, do not go to Wuhan. And those in Wuhan please do not leave the city," said National Health Commission Vice-Minister Li Bin in one of the first public briefings since the beginning of the outbreak. Despite only about 500 cases being confirmed, calculations by scientists at the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis at Imperial College London suggest there are 4,000 people sick with the virus in Wuhan. In another statement, released to the South China Morning Post, scientists
said: “The Wuhan coronavirus’ natural host could be bats … but between bats and humans there may be an unknown intermediate.” Bat soup is a popular delicacy in Wuhan. With many pictures circulating social media, fears have been spread that it could be that this soup is the reason for the spread of the Coronavirus. Coronaviruses cause diseases in mammals and birds that include diarrhea in cows and pigs, upper respiratory disease in chickens and rare, but potentially lethal, human respiratory infections although these are often mild.
Not all politics is local With Ireland in the throes of a General Election campaign our politicians are concentrating on national and local issues. However, they can’t afford to take their eye off the international ball either. We should have a new Government by February 20. By that time, if British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has his way, the UK will have left the EU. This will have far reaching effects on either side of the Irish Sea and north and south of the border. Those effects will be felt from Dublin
to Belfast, to Brussels via London and all the way to Washington. That is how President Donald Trump comes into this discussion. Once Britain leaves the UK it will turn to other international partners to create trade deals. The US is an obvious choice for Johnson, but is he ready to take on Trump’s unconventional negotiating style? Trump refuses to trade with those who do business with his enemies; threatens his friends with tariffs if they fail to sign up to his foreign pol-
Quinn is a former professional football player who has represented the Republic of Ireland national team 92 times, as well as playing in the English top flight for Arsenal FC, Manchester City FC and Sunderland AFC. As well as being a former board member of Sport Ireland, Niall is the former Chairman of Sunderland AFC and a successful businessman across diverse industries in Ireland and abroad. In addressing the current challenges facing the FAI, the executive team want to ensure that the organisation’s core objective of the promotion and development of the game of football in Ireland is prioritised. Niall’s role with the team will focus on leading a future League of Ireland strategy, the overall development of the game in Ireland, including supporting grassroots and community initiatives together with our player pathway programmes. Niall will also focus on helping restoring and building key relationships and trust with key peer groups and the media. “We are really pleased that someone of Niall’s calibre is joining the team,” Gary Owens, FAI interim CEO, said. “Football is such an important game in this country."
icy objectives; and invokes security complaints to trigger trade wars with fellow western states. In simple terms, Trump won’t do business with his enemies, Iran and Korea for example, but by extension he won’t do business with countries that do business with the same enemies. This puts Johnson in a dangerous place; accepting a deal with Trump may close the door on other international markets like China. The reverse is true too, if Johnson strikes a decent exit deal with Brussels, Trump may take it personally and refuse to do business with the EU. And anything that destabilises either the US or UK economy is bad news for Ireland.

People still want plastic bottles - says Coca-Cola Coca-Cola will not ditch single-use plastic bottles because consumers still want them, the firm's Head of Sustainability has told the BBC. The drinks giant produces about three million tonnes of plastic packaging a year - equivalent to 200,000 bottles a minute. The firm, which is one of the largest plastic waste producers, has vowed to recycle as many plastic bottles as it uses by 2030. However, in 2019, it was found to be the most polluting brand in a global analysis of plastic waste by the charity Break Free from Plastic. Coca-Cola's Head of Sustainability, Bea
Perez, said the firm could not ditch plastic outright, as some campaigners wanted, saying this could alienate customers and hit sales. She also said using only aluminium and glass packaging could push up the firm's carbon footprint. "Business won't be in business if we don't accommodate consumers," she said. Ms Perez also said she agreed with calls for Coca-Cola to reach its environmental goals sooner than 2030 - although she would not say whether she would step down if the plans fail. "We have to reach this goal and we will there's no question."
FUN QUIZ: Fleadh 2020 Chairman Vincent Prendergast, with commitee members Sarah Clinton, Louise O'Shea and Tricia Bennett, inviting everyone to the Faha Court Quiz in aid of Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí, Milltown 2020.
Fleadh quiz for the free family entertainment A fundraiser for the 2020 Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí will take place in Listry, next week. The event, which will raise funds for this year’s free family entertainment at this year's County Fleadh in Milltown, takes place on January 31 in the Faha Court Bar at 8.30pm, and promises to be a great night of fun. “The Fleadh is back in Milltown for the third year in a row, and the full line up for the free outdoor music will be revealed in the coming weeks,” Vincent Prendergast, Fleadh 2020 Chairman, said. “The Milltown Listry branch of Comhaltas have organised the two previous fleadhanna and provided over €10,000
worth of free family entertainment each year. This year will be no exception with more fantastic events throughout the Fleadh." The previous two years in Milltown saw appearances from Stockton's Wing and Kila, both global traditional acts, and 2020 will see another world renowned act headline the on-street free entertainment. There will also be a full program of free family events over the weekend. "Beat the winter blues with a great night in Faha Court, with novelty rounds, spot prizes and something special for the winners,” Fleadh PRO Chris Horan added.
Kerry nominees sought for EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Kerry entrepreneurs are encouraged to put themselves forward to follow in the footsteps of wellknown Kerry business people in the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year. Brian McCarthy, Fexco; Jerry Kennelly, Stockbyte; Alan Scroope, Freeflow; Mike Fitzgerald, Altobridge and Edmond Harty, Dairymaster have all won category awards in the programme over the last 23 years. The programme is open to entrepreneurs from all sectors and growth stages in the Republic and Northern Ireland. The awards programme is divided into three categories - Emerging, Industry and International - with eight finalists chosen per category. 24 finalists will be selected by an independent judging panel, comprising former winners and chaired by Anne Heraty of CPL Resources plc. “The launch of the programme is an exciting time for all of us here at EY. This year
we are keen to see an even broader range and diversity of nominees, across industries, age, gender, location and background. We’ve seen a steady but gradual increase in the number of women nominated in recent years, but we want 2020 to be the year where we see a more significant jump. It’s important to us that the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year programme accurately reflects the fabric of the entrepreneurial landscape across the entire island of Ireland. That’s why we’re urging all Kerry entrepreneurs to consider putting themselves forward, and for people to encourage entrepreneurs in their families and networks to get involved,” said Roger Wallace, Partner Lead for EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ Ireland. Anyone interested can find out more or complete an online nomination form at www.eoy.ie. Those nominating someone else must do so with the entrepreneur’s consent.
SHOW TIME: Kerry’s youngest club, Na Gael, will perform in Croke Park tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.
Tralee Gaelic football club on the cusp of history Na Gael Football Club will play in an All-Ireland final in Croke Park for the first time. Tomorrow (Saturday) they will play in the All-Ireland Junior Club final against Wexford's Rathgarogue-Cushinstown. In Kerry GAA terms it may not seem such a big deal. Since the competitions inception in 2002 Kerry teams have played in 11 and only lost two. Four of the last five finals have been won by Kerry sides including last year’s victors Kilcummin. But for Na Gael, it is slightly different. Barely 40-years-old, the club was found-
ed in 1979 and is Kerry’s youngest club. The club was founded in order to cater for the growing number of youngsters wanting to play the sport in the Oakpark area of Tralee. While Na Gael did experience some success in the intervening years, including reaching the top division of the league, they would not win their first Junior County title until 2019. Saturday’s junior final serves as a curtain raiser to the opening National League tie between Kerry and Dublin in Croke Park. For Kerry’s youngest club it cannot get any bigger.

No stubbly regrowth is a dream for everyone and now is the best time to start when you can allow the regrowth between waxes without the worry of being caught off guard by a sunny day or night out! Shortly after starting waxing you will notice that the growth starts to slow down, hair feels finer and softer. Even the hair that regrows won’t feel rough , it’ll be so much softer. It’s important to exfoliate between waxing, as some people can be prone to ingrown hair. However, the amount of ingrown hair with waxing is always less then with shaving or hair removal cream. The underarm waxing treatment gives the best results, as it leaves no shadow after hair removal. The wax we use for the underarm is a choice of hot wax or film wax. We also use a wax with an
5
inbuilt hair inhibitor to help slow down the growth. It’s best for sensitive areas, which can get the shortest and toughest of hair. Most people that shave tell me they have to do it every day or at least every second day. Whether it’s the lip, chin, neck, sides of face, even specialised bikini waxing using film or strip wax will give you a longer time between treatments, usually three to four weeks. When I start a new client on underarm treatments, we recommend that you leave it grow for one to two weeks before your first treatment. If you haven’t tried waxing before it’s important to get a patch test first. Why not call in for a chat and see how it can work for you. Call Jill for more information or booking on 064 6632966.

tions: three petrol and two diesels. Transmission options run to five or six-speed manuals, plus a seven-speed Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) automatic. In 2020, these powertrains will be joined by a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid - a first in the small SUV class. Starting the range is the 3-cylinder TCe 100, which packs a healthy 100hp and 160Nm of torque, and it’s fitted as standard with a five-speed gearbox. Next up is the TCe 130 engine that has already been seen on the new Clio, as well as Mégane and Kadjar. The TCe 155 is the flagship engine for performance, it is extremely impressive figures of 155hp and 270Nm delivering assured performance in all conditions. Both diesel engines are based on the proven 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit. In dCi 95 guise it offers 95hp while the dCi 115 increases these outputs to 115hp.

Killarney Cars and Coffee returns for season two The popular Killarney Cars and Coffee monthly meet will return for a second season on February 16. Founded by Killarney Advertiser proprietor Cormac Casey, the meetings will take place on the third Sunday of every month from mid-February until further notice. Last year, the maiden event ran in August and continued until November and organisers hope to repeat this calendar format for 2020. Killarney Cars and Coffee will take place at KC Print, in Lissivigeen, just outside
Killarney (EIRCODE: V93 XA70). Last year it regularly attracted over 100 cars from rare classics to rally cars and modern supercars. The warehouse facilities at KC Print allows for the show to go ahead in all weather conditions. “It is time to wash the winter grime off those cars and bikes folks,” co-founder Ger Neeson said. “The first Killarney Cars and Coffee of 2020 is scheduled for Sunday, February 16 from 10am to 1pm. Bring your pride and joy, enjoy a coffee or hot chocolate and some good conversation.”

Teens from Transition Year in Killarney Community College paid a visit to Marks and Spencer with their teacher Ms. McCarthy last week to learn how the multi-million euro business runs. Killarney Community College has been partnered with Marks & Spencer, Killarney for over 10 years, Ms. McCarthy explained. “Throughout the morning the students received an informative talk from Manager Paul Daly who explained to them the product life cycle of some of their products and how the business is run on a daily basis,” she said. “The students asked questions and went around the store with Retail Manager Donal Casey. They were brought through the storage rooms, cold rooms and freezer area and learned what every room and appliance does and about the produce that they store.”
The students were also shown the IT side of things and learned how the freezer and cold rooms are operated. He explained to the students when a delivery is received and the steps that happen next in order for it to be available on the shop floor whether it is in the fashion or food hall department. And since St Valentine's Day is around the corner the students with a budget of €150 were set a challenge to dress a mannequin for a date. Head of Fashion, Noreen Lyne, assisted the students with her first hand expertise. “The Skills at Work Programme provides our students with an unique experience into the world of work,” Ms. McCarthy said. “Over five sessions, our students are provided with the opportunity to learn about the partnering company and its business and to consider career and further study options available to them when they finish school.”

CORBETT
In loving memory of Catherina Connolly, nee O’Meara, late of Ballybrack, Firies, Killarney, who died on the 27th of January 2001.
In loving memory of a special Mom & Nan, Mary Corbett, late of Holy Cross, Firies, who died on the 23rd of January 2018.
God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be So he put his arms around you And whispered “Come To Me” With tearful eyes we watched you As you passed away Although we loved you dearly We could not make you stay A golden heart stopped beating Hard working hands at rest God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky. Though Heaven and Earth divide us, We are never far apart, For you are always on our minds, And forever in our hearts.
In loving memory of Michael Cahill, late of Cockhill, Kilcummin, who passed away on 23rd January 2019. On the first anniversary of Michael’s death, his brother and sisters would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all who sympathised with us on our sad loss. Your support and kindness has been greatly appreciated. Thanks to those who sent mass cards, letters of sympathy or in any way supported us during this difficult time. Thanks to Dr Eamonn Shanahan, and all the nurses and staff of Hawthorn Ward, Columbanus’ Home, for their kindness and understanding. Thanks to O’Shea’s Funeral Directors for their sensitivity and professionalism. A sincere thanks to Fr. 4TH ANNIVERSARY KELLIHER
In loving memory of Mary Corbett, late of Holy Cross, Firies. who died on 23rd of January 2018. In loving memory of Sheila (Mac) Kelliher, Clash, Killarney who died on the 31st of January, 2016.
You can shed tears that she is gone, Or you can smile because she lived,
Lonely is the home without you, Life to us is not the same; All the world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again.
You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back, Or you can open your eyes and see all she has left.
A light from our household gone, A voice we loved is still, A place is vacant in our home, That never can be filled. May the God of Love and Mercy, Care for our loved one who is gone, And bless with consolation, Those left to carry on. The happy hours we once enjoyed, How sweet their memory still, But death has left a vacant place, This world can never fill. How dearly we loved you, And prayed you might live, But Jesus just beckoned, And we had to give. God gave us strength to bear it, And courage to fight the blow, What it has meant to lose you, God alone will ever know. Sadly missed and never forgotten by Tomas, Stephen and Ryan. Anniversay mass for Sheila will be on Friday, 31st January at 6:15 pm in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her, Or you can be full of the love that she shared. You can remember her and only that she is gone, Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, Or you can do what Mom would want: Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. Sadly missed by your daughter Maria, son Niall, Son-in-law Malcolm and granddaughters Clara and Saoirse. Annivrsary Mass, Tuesday 28th January, 7:30pm in Firies Church.

A laugh, a joke, a time to care A wonderful nature, warm and true These are the memories we have of you.

Anniversary Mass for Elizabeth will be held on Sunday, February 2nd at 12 o’clock, in St. Mary’s Cathedral.
MARY MALONE’S PRAYER FOR HEALING Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen. S.R.
O’SHEA
Thank you Dr. Domhnal Kavanagh and staff at Torc Medical who gave great support throughout Mam’s illness and to Ian Trant and staff at Sewells Pharmacy. A sincere thanks to Fr. Kieran O Brien, who visited Mom regularly and for celebrating a very special and beautiful funeral mass and burial.
2ND AND 5TH ANNIVERSARY
God saw you getting tired, And a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around you, And whispered “Come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, As you slowly slipped away, And though we loved you dearly, We couldn’t make you stay. Two hearts full of gold stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Always loved and sadly missed by your son Patrick, daughter-in-law Mary, granddaughters Rachel and Saoirse.
Fondly remembered by Joe.

BACK AT IT Intercounty season to kick off with Kerry’s trip to Dublin
Here we go again. It’s time for another season of packed defences and mounting expenses. Seven months of rule changes and dull post-match exchanges. 31 weeks of burned ears and talk of tiers. 218 days of underused pitches and footballers on ditches. 5,229 hours of cynical tackles and fixture debacles. 313,780 minutes of the Hill being blue and Brolly (on payper-view). It’s 18,826,800 long seconds until the

intercounty calendar finally concludes with the 2020 All-Ireland football final at the end of August and, in spite of everything, there’s actually plenty to look forward to. That particular observation is especially true if you’re a Kerry fan. Peter Keane’s young side exceeded expectations in 2019 and there’s every reason to believe that they’ll be contenders again this time out. With the six-in-a-rowchasing Dubs (hopefully) reeling from
the departure of their inspirational bainisteoir Jim Gavin, it’s all (hopefully) set up for the traditional high kings of Gaelic football to regain their crown. (Hopefully.) It’s difficult to predict how Kerry will line out against Dublin on Saturday night or, for that matter, how Dublin will line out against Kerry. Both teams have only recently returned from their team holidays in Asia so it would, perhaps, be unwise to read too much into the outcome
of the first league game of the year – but that doesn’t mean the match won’t be keenly contested. One thing we do know for certain is that David Clifford will be going up for the toss (see p65). Kerry laid down a marker by defeating the Dubs in last year’s league and it would do them no harm at all to repeat the trick tomorrow evening in Croke Park. Intercounty football is back. Here’s hoping that Kerry football is back with it.

Two-thirds of Kerry fans expecting AllIreland glory
SPORT INFOGRAPHIC
24.1.2020
A survey carried out by the Killarney Advertiser this week has revealed that 65% of Kerry fans are expecting a 38th All-Ireland title by the end of the year, with a whopping 99% of all respondents saying that Peter Keane’s men need to at least make the final for 2020 to be classed as a “good year”. The survey shows how radically Kerry supporters’ expectations have changed in the past 12 months. In the most recent questionnaire, 36% were of the opinion that Kerry would win the 2020 National League. This represents a dramatic increase on last year’s pre-season poll when just 2.4% of our readers predicted that Kerry would go all the way. Kerry eventually fell just short of clinching the Division 1 crown when they were defeated by Mayo in the decider. Last January, almost a quarter of supporters feared that Kerry would get relegated to Division 2. This year, zero respondents foresee the Munster champions finishing below fourth.
MUNSTER
Despite Cork’s impressive showing in last year’s Munster final, Kerry fans expect the county’s dominance at provincial level to continue in 2020 with 96% predicting an eighth Munster title in a row. For their part, Cork got the remaining 4% of the votes. Taking a broad view of the team’s progress, an overwhelming majority (92%) of those polled said they are confident that Kerry are heading in the right direction. When asked the same question last June ahead of the Munster final, that percentage was at 78%. Dublin’s five-in-a-row-winning manager Jim Gavin resigned at the end of the 2019 season and Kerry fans believe that this could affect the champions’ chances in 2020. 38% of respondents said that Gavin’s departure was “very significant” while a further 53% described his resignation as being “somewhat significant”. Just 9% feel that the change in manager is of no importance at all. Kerry will get their 2020 league campaign up and running with a tricky away tie against Dublin on Saturday night.

Kerry are Dublin’s toughest rivals but improvements are needed A new decade, a new challenge, but the same age old culchie versus jackeen rivalry will be renewed in Croke Park tomorrow when Kerry meet Dublin in the first round of the new Allianz National Football League. You couldn’t ask for a more attractive opener to the 2020 intercounty football calendar. These two sides last met in the 2019 All-Ireland final, which went to a replay before Dublin wrote themselves into the history books by winning the elusive five-in-a-row. Popular opinion says that Dublin will make that six and pundit Joe Brolly agrees, while also predicting that Kerry will win in 2021. Tomorrow’s game will give us an early indication of how accurate that prediction will be.
TOUGHEST
The honeymoon period is over for Kerry boss Peter Keane. He did very well last year, but Kerry fans will be looking for Sam to come south this time out. Kerry are the toughest opposition Dublin will encounter but improvements are necessary, especially in defence. Kerry need two new good and strong defenders
to stop the likes of Paul Mannion, Con O’Callaghan and Ciarán Kilkenny. Will Jack Sherwood get a starting position after his success with East Kerry in the 2019 County Championship? Midfield is always crucial. How long more can David Moran hold sway after coming back from two cruciate injuries? Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor will not be available tomorrow, so who will Keane put in? Liam Kearney from Spa will surely come into the reckoning. The forwards are there in plenty, led by David Clifford and Seán O’Shea. They were on Sigerson duty in recent weeks and they are as sharp as they were with Kerry in 2019. I was very impressed by the 6-foot-plus forward from Fossa in the Sigerson Cup against IT Carlow. The first half scores weren’t enough for IT Tralee on the day but everything he did showed pure class. Such coolness, such
NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1
_________________________________________________________________________
Dublin v Kerry Saturday at 7.15pm Croke Park control, such class. Seán O’Shea was brilliant against the Dubs in the 2019 finals. Well able to score from play, he is also a great free-taker. Anything from the 45-metre line in to goal is grist to the mill for him. He was on the UCC team surprisingly dumped out of the Sigerson by IT Carlow last weekend. It was good to see David Shaw back in action with UCC after his long lay-off with injury. He scored three points on his return. Will Paudie Clifford be joining his brother David in the forward division? He staked a claim with great performances for East Kerry in 2019.
FITNESS
Kerry will be slightly ahead of Dublin in terms of fitness levels for tomorrow’s game as the Dubs senior players have only got together recently after their
holiday in Bali. They had what really was a third string out against Longford and nearly beat them. That was Dessie O’Farrell’s first day in charge. Influential goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton might not line out tomorrow, despite declaring his availability for 2020, while other expected absentees include Jack McCaffrey and Con O’Callaghan, who was injured on Sigerson duty. Kerry will still be without Peter Crowley for much of the league as he continues to recover from a cruciate injury. I will be very interested to see what team Kerry will field for this new campaign. I think they have a great chance of repeating their league success over the Dubs in Tralee last year, but it will be difficult as the All-Ireland champions have strength in depth and very few of the over-30 brigade have retired. A win for Kerry would be a great start and a boost for a home game in Tralee against Galway, who will be rejuvenated by the appointment of Pádraig Joyce as bainisteoir. It will be a busy month for Kerry with league games versus Galway (February 1), Tyrone (February 9), Meath (February 23) and Mayo (February 29).
SPORT
24.1.2020 It’s not often I’d disagree with Stormzy but ‘heavy is the head that wears the crown’ doesn’t apply to everyone. For some, leadership roles can be a burden, a source of turmoil, something to be avoided if at all possible. For others, the added responsibility brings out the best in them. This week, David Clifford was named Kerry captain for 2020, instantly singling him out as a leader of the team in an official capacity. By and large, the news has been greeted warmly but some observers have expressed concerns that the new role will put him under unnecessary pressure heading into the new season. What, more pressure than he has been under since bursting onto the scene four years ago? Clifford the captain will get some extra attention, certainly, but it’s not as though he has been flying under the radar all this time. The supremely gifted corner forward, who turned 21 on Wednesday, has been marked for greatness from a young age. Such external pressure would cripple many young men, particularly in Kerry where promising footballers are immediately placed under the harshest of spotlights, but the boy from Fossa has never been fazed.
MARKED MAN
Clifford’s form at schools level for St Brendan’s College piqued interest locally and he was very much a marked man by the time the Hogan Cup final rolled around in April of 2016. The Sem were desperately searching for their first national football title since 1992. How would the 17-year-old fare in Croke Park, with a St Pat’s backline, well-warned of his abilities, ready and waiting, and the hopes of Killarney on his shoulders? Clifford kicked 2-5 (2-3 from play) in a seven-point victory. Afterwards, his manager, Garry McGrath, an experienced mentor who would be loath to heap unnecessary pressure on one of his young charges, couldn’t help but gush.
“He is a phenomenal talent. David Clifford reminds me every day at training of no one else but Maurice Fitzgerald. I can see it in him. I will be killed for saying it…” The online hype machine went into overdrive as highlight videos were shared widely on social media and prominent journalists urged football fans to “remember the name”. Later that year, all eyes were on Clifford yet again when he lined out (in his bad year) for the Kerry minors in the All-Ireland final against Galway. Yet again he grabbed the limelight, scoring one of the goals of the season as Kerry secured their third All-Ireland on the trot. 12 months down the line, Clifford, now the team’s captain, was tasked with leading the minors to an unprecedented four-in-a-row. Kerry and Clifford were set up for a fall but 12 seconds into the final, the skipper put the ball in the Derry net. He finished up with 4-4 as Kerry coasted to victory, and the precocious youngster was widely heralded as the greatest minor footballer of all time. Never in the history of the game had a player graduated to senior level amidst such a whirlwind of hysteria but any questions about his ability to make the grade were quickly answered. His performances in his debut season in 2018 earned him an All-Star and the Young Player of the Year award – despite Kerry having a poor season overall – and in 2019 he was a key player again as Peter Keane’s men pushed Dublin all the way in the All-Ireland final. Pressure just doesn’t affect him. Actually, that’s not right. Pressure does affect him, but not in the same way it affects the rest of us. To paraphrase basketballer Earl Boykins, pressure can burst your pipes but it can also make a diamond. So far in his nascent career, intense pressure has only caused David Clifford to sparkle more brightly. So give him the captaincy. Add him to the management team. Make him Taoiseach. The crown will rest easy on David Clifford’s head.

Celts to host ex-tenants Kerry Schoolboys/Girls League RESULTS: SATURDAY, JANUARY 25 Galaxy in local derby U12 BOYS NATIONAL CUP (LAST 32) U14 BOYS PREMIER
Kilmacennan v Killorglin
MEK Galaxy will return to their old home on Sunday but the team formerly known as Cedar won’t be expecting a warm welcome as they seek their first league win of the season against their ex-landlords, defending champions Killarney Celtic. Galaxy, who joined the KDL proper in 2011, previously trained and played their home fixtures at Celtic Park but that particular alliance fell by the wayside a couple of seasons ago. The senior side subsequently joined forces with local schoolboys/girls club MEK United and the rebranded outfit currently play their home games in the Dragon’s Den all-weather facility in Killorglin. That link-up between MEK and Galaxy appears to be a win-win for both parties: the latter get a senior team for their young stars to graduate to and the former will hopefully get a steady supply of youth players, which will be crucial in their efforts to keep the show on the road well into the future.
TOUGH
The MEK Galaxy seniors are finding the going tough in their first ever season in the Premier A division. Despite spirited performances against established clubs like Castleisland, Tralee Dynamos, Fenit and Killarney Athletic, Galaxy are still searching for their first victory of the

campaign. They can take heart from their defensive efforts – only one team has put more than two goals past them and that was in a 3-3 draw – but they will need to start picking up some points, and soon. The challenge doesn’t get any easier, though. Sunday’s clash against Killarney Celtic provides another stern test and, in truth, they will be doing very well to get any change out of last season’s double-winners, who are in superb form. A solid display at their old stomping ground would be good for confidence but one would expect the old landlords to be in typically miserly form.
ATHLETIC
It’s a big weekend for Killarney Athletic as they head to Limerick to take on Aisling Annacotty in the Munster Junior Cup. The Blues head into Saturday’s fixture full of confidence following their recent Kerry Area final victory over Tralee Dynamos but Aisling are sure to fancy their chances, especially at home. The Limerick side’s attacking efforts will be spearheaded by veteran striker Shane Clarke, who made the switch from Janesboro at the start of the season.

Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Football League
| By Eamonn Keogh Killarney's Scotts Lakers have moved into joint second place on the league table following an 8497 away win against the Waterford Vikings last Saturday night. Promotion rivals Fr Mathews slipped up against the Limerick Celtics on the same day, leaving the Lakers and Mathews in a tie for second with 11 wins and four losses each. With the sides all set for a potentially decisive clash in Killarney next month, it’s all to play for heading down the final stretch.
PEPPER
Waterford started well on Saturday with Ryan Pepper, Michael Grassey and Jay Kavanagh impressing. Toby Christensen got Scotts Lakers off the mark while Xavier Talton and Mick McGinn were also on target. Despite three-pointers from Aaron Jackson and Séamus Brosnan, the Lakers trailed 23-18 at the end of the first quarter. Grassey was dominant for the home side but Christensen was equally impressive for the Lakers and the visitors just edged ahead by a single point, 44-45, before the interval. Scotts Lakers took control of this game in the third quarter restricting the Vi-
kings to just 15 points. Lakers gained the advantage with three-pointers from O’Neill and another from Jackson, along with baskets from McGinn, Brosnan and Christensen. The Killarney side enjoyed a 15-point lead, 59 -74, as the game entered the final quarter. The Vikings fought back in the final quarter through Grassey and Sheehan but the Lakers maintained their advantage to prevent any upset. Christensen, Jackson and Brosnan all added baskets and O’Neill sank his fifth three-pointer of the night. Young Jamie O’Sullivan finished the night’s scoring with two free-throws to secure a 13-point win. The next few weeks will be interesting for the Lakers as the battle intensifies for top table place and the prospect of promotion. The Killarney side’s next outing is away to Tolka Rovers on February 1, followed by a home game against Portlaoise Panthers in Killarney on Sunday, February 2. The Lakers are also in Killarney on February 8 as they host the Ulster Elks before facing a difficult double-header weekend away in Donegal and Sligo on February 15/16. The potentially season-defining matchup with Fr Mathews takes place in Killarney on February 22.

B reen and Nagle enter Belgium’s biggest historic rally
Craig Breen and Paul Nagle are a surprise entry in next weekend’s Legend Boucles Bastogne Rally, Belgium’s biggest historic rally. The 2019 Rally of the Lakes winners will drive a BMW M3 in the legendary Fina colours on the January 21 to February 2 event. Over 300 cars are expected to contest the rally with entries coming from former WRC pilots like Kris Meeke and Mikko Hirvonen, who both drive Ford Escort Mk2s. The Legend Boucles Bastogne Rally takes place the same weekend as the Galway International Rally, meaning that the Waterford/Killarney pairing will
not be defending their Irish Tarmac Rally Championship title. |
O ’Sullivan returns to the WRC
Killarney co-driver Noel O’Sullivan will return to the World Rally Championship for the first time since 2017. O’Sullivan will contest the Junior World Rally Championship over five rounds alongside Jon Armstrong in a Ford Fiesta R2, beginning with next month’s Rally Sweden. Rally Italy Sardinia will take place between June 4 and June 7, Rally Finland is scheduled for August 6 to 9 and Germany will run between October 15 and 18. The final round is Wales Rally GB on October 29 to November 1.
