Next phase - electric charging points and footpath widening The new facility on Rock Road includes the provision of underground electric cables to allow for future easy connection of electric car charging points. As the move from fossil fuel to electric powered cars gathers pace, more and more publicly accessible charging points will become necessary in every town in the country. “We have allowed for EV charging points and can connect these in due course, very easily,” Owen O’Shea, Kerry County Council’s Media and Communications officer, said. And the next phase of the Rock Road plan will include the widening of the footpath at the opposite side of the street to the car park. “The development will be followed later in the year by the road overlay and the footpath widened on the opposite side of the road,” Municipal District Officer, Eileen O’Donoghue, added. 190 new parking spaces opened in Killarney A brand new car park – bringing 190 additional car and bus parking spaces was officially opened on Wednesday – but it remains to be seen if it will improve the serious traffic congestion which has plagued the town for years. | By Sean Moriarty News of the new 1.25 acre car park on Rock Road was cautiously welcomed by some – with many highlighting that the parking was too far outside the town centre. Concerns have been raised that both locals and tourists will have to travel too far from the car park into the town to access services – while others have praised the new development stating that the additional spaces are a step in the right direction. On Wednesday, the generosity of the Sisters of Mercy Order in Killarney was praised by town officials during the opening as they donated land to Kerry County Council to allow its construction.
Works by Ml. Lynch Civil Engineering Ltd and Glas Civil Engineering, which began in November, included moving the existing walls back without taking from the traditional look of the stonework. “This facility would not have come about, of course, but for the generosity of the Mercy Sisters who kindly donated some of their property to facilitate the construction of the car park,” Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, John Sheahan, said. “This has been a project which my elected colleagues in the Municipal District have long campaigned for and we are delighted to see it coming to fruition.” “As elected members, we have been acutely conscious of the need for ad-
ditional car and bus parking facilities in Killarney.” Angela McAllen, Manager of the Killarney Municipal District, also attended the official opening on Wednesday, as well as members of the Mercy Order. “As a local authority, Kerry County Council sometimes relies on the generosity of landowners who see the greater good in providing land for developments such as this and we are deeply grateful to the Sisters for accommodating us in this way,” Ms McAllen said. “I understand that the convent has been here since 1857 and it must have been a big decision for the Sisters to forfeit part of their front garden to accommodate this facility, so that is very much appreciated.” Municipal District Officer Eileen O’Donoghue added that the Municipal District would like to thank the Mercy Sisters, residents of Rock Road, contractors, and the adjoining organisations for their cooperation during the construction phase.
Traffic congestion remains high on Council’s priority list Killarney Municipal District staff have vowed to continue to work to solve Killarney’s traffic concerns - especially during the busy tourist season. Despite the opening of the new car park on Rock Road which has 190 car parking spaces, there is still work to be done. “This is a very good day for Killarney as we add significantly to our parking complement and thereby contribute towards the alleviation of traffic congestion around the town centre,” said Angela McAllen, Manager of the Killarney Municipal District. “My colleagues in the Municipal District have worked with elected members to develop this car and bus park and we will continue to look at other measures which will help to provide better traffic flow and parking facilities into the future.” “It is an important delivery on the Traffic Management Study for Killarney. The development of a walkway cycleway on a key approach to the town improves accessibility and connectivity to the town centre,” Eileen O’Donoghue, Municipal District Officer, said. The new car park also includes the new style parking machines that allow payment by bank card as well as cash.

MUSICAL VISIT: Cliona Hagan and Amy Barr pictured with teachers Olwyn Trant and Rhonda Healy and pupils at Holy Cross Mercy School for the launch of the nationwide 'Just Sing Project’. Photo: Michelle Crean
Country music star pops into Killarney school! The excitement was palpable in one school on Monday as talented pupils excitedly worked alongside a country music star during a musical masterclass. | By Michelle Crean Award-winning Irish Country artist Cliona Hagan, who was recently a finalist in RTÉ’s ‘Dancing with the Stars Ireland’, popped into Holy Cross Mercy School on New Road to launch her brand-new music programme, ‘Just Sing Project’.
The visit is part of a fun, exciting and engaging project for groups of musical pupils, running over five weeks, concluding with a performance alongside Cliona on stage in the INEC Acoustic Club Killarney on October 4, as part of her ‘Dance On’ theatre headline concert tour. Pupils from Third to Sixth class were
thrilled to meet the popular singer and excited to learn that they have been selected as the only school in Ireland to open the music concert this coming October. Cliona spent over an hour talking to the pupils who make up the school choir, and gave them a song ‘God Bless This Child’ to practice. She also sang with them and answered their many questions about her time on ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Cliona said that she really enjoyed the visit.
“They were absolutely amazing, I’m looking forward to the concert in October,” Cliona said. “I really want this project to help young people get a kick-start into arts and music.” Her reason for choosing a Killarney school to launch the project is to do with her strong connections to the town, she explained. “When I was a child I came to Killarney regularly, but not so much in recent years,” Cliona, who received Female Vocalist of the Year for the third year running at the recent Hot Country TV Awards 2019, said. “I haven’t spent enough time in Killarney. It has a special place in my heart.” She added that Amy Barr, who is running the programme with her, heard about the Mercy choir, and she was interested to hear them herself.
Angry locals protest battery storage plans | By Sean Moriarty Over 80 east Kerry locals fighting the construction of a wind turbine battery storage site staged a protest outside Kerry County Council offices in Tralee on Monday, to highlight their fears over a planned battery storage compound in Ballydesmond. Kerry County Council has given planning permission to Redfaze Limited to build 40 battery units, transformers and associated equipment. Angry and frustrated locals from the Gneeveguilla, Knocknagree, Scartaglin, Kiskeam and the Newmarket areas, who
have lodged an appeal against the planning permission for the facility on health and safety grounds with An Bord Pleanala, say that they fear that the batteries are potentially at high risk of going on fire, resulting in toxic smoke which would lead to an evacuation of a 10 mile radius in the area. “Since Monday’s protest we have received emails and phone calls from groups all over the country with similar issues,” concerned local Anita O’Sullivan said. “We have lodged the appeal but these things cost money so our next move is to raise funds to keep the momentum going. We will keep pushing and we are fully committed to fighting this to the end."

The youngsters from Killarney Community College won the National Young Social Innovators Social Media Award at the YSI Awards Ceremony under the category 'Making our Community Better' in Croke Park, for their project 'Be Dementia Aware', on May 15. Working in teams, young people aged between 15-18 identify a social issue of concern to them, explore it and come up with real actions to create change. The Killarney students were one of 31 finalists through to the awards out of 413 innovative projects around Ireland. Each was presented with a pin and a glass trophy designed by John Rocha. The main aim of 'Be Dementia Aware' is to raise awareness about dementia and how it effects families, their YSI Guide and teacher, Lorraine Crowley explained. “The students believed that this issue needed to be explored and wanted to create an environment where everyone can support people with dementia and their loved ones through their difficult times,” she said. “The group of students were invited to Dáil Éireann where they were greeted and guided by TD Michael Healy-Rae and treated like VIPs.” The students created and have ac-
tively used a number of different social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to publicise their awareness campaign throughout the year. ‘Be Dementia Aware’ created innovative and educational videos to inform people in the community about dementia and support families who have loved ones with the illness . These can be viewed on their social media platforms, their YouTube channel and also their website www.bedementiaaware.com. “The passion and innovation these students have shown since the beginning of the year is an inspiration to all young people in Kerry and beyond. They showed great care and support towards the families and the people who have dementia in their community.” Team member Aoife O’Brien added that they know they are making a difference in their community. “Because of us, people are much more educated and feel comforted and touched that a group of young people care so much about raising awareness about this issue.” Student Caoimhe Fleming added that one women donated money to them in memory of her mother who suffered from dementia and passed away in January. “We have donated this to the Rockmount Care Centre in Kilgarvan.”

They were presented with their plaque at the ceremony by Mary Kennedy, Hospice Sunflower Days Ambassador and RTE Broadcaster. “We are not in this for awards,” Angela told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is nice to be recognised but only for the generosity of the people of Killarney we would not be able to do what we do. “All money raised stays in Kerry.” Angela and Noreen have been involved in fundraising for the Kerry Hospice Foundation almost since its foundation in the early 1990s and, along with other volunteers, helped to raise over €6 million to build the hospice in Tralee. They have also organised baking for the annual coffee morning and help run the annual fashion show at the Gleneagle each September. Noreen is a committee member since day-one and Angela joined the committee shortly after.
GSOC launch investigation Garda watchdog GSOC have this week confirmed that it has launched an investigation into allegations that extra names were added to the supplementary electoral register. A large numbers of forms, involving up to 200 voters, or voters who were changing address, were stamped by a garda without the presence of the voters, as required, it has been alleged. It’s believed the incident happened in the Killarney area. The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission said it was aware of the matter, but would not comment any further. “GSOC has launched a public interest investigation into these alleged allegations,” a GSOC spokesperson confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser this week. However, they were unable to confirm if the investigation is centred on the Killarney area. An Garda Síochána also this week confirmed that they too are investigating.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Thousands of adults are vulnerable in our society Apparently 10,000 cases of vulnerable adult abuse gets reported each year and hundreds of thousands of adults are vulnerable in our society. Safeguarding vulnerable adults is what an organisation called ‘Safeguarding Ireland’ is all about. They are calling for tougher laws and a 24-hour helpline. I had not heard of the organisation but they are a cross body organisation with input from the Gardai, the legal profession and health bodies, and they are trying to highlight their cause. One of these research polls that seem to form the basis for everything these days, and - without which no opinion can be opened - finds there is a lot of abuse out there. That Red C Poll of 1,000 leads Safeguarding Ireland to extrapolate: “Based on our adult population (over 18s) of approximately 3.8m, this would imply an estimate of potentially 380,000 witnessed cases of adult abuse per annum”. Their stats are a bit of a stretch to be honest. But the abuse of vulnerable adults is not new and is something we have all witnessed. In this week of going to the polls we recall the regular dragging of elderly people, disabled persons and others into polling booths to vote - and this was not so long ago. And to think that hospitals and care homes once allowed the collection of patients
in vans and cars by supporters and candidates! But of course, that no longer happens - unless there is a new target audience these days? I questioned ‘Safeguarding Ireland’ about what is meant by the term “vulnerable adult”. People who are physically or mentally impaired or old people, I was told. “When a vulnerable, or frail elderly person is forced to do something against their will – be it to do with their finances, their care, or their liberty – it is abuse and this is against the law,” they said. What about temporary impairment, I asked? Can an adult be vulnerable for a while and then not vulnerable anymore? Can it be just going through a trough in life, I asked? Can you be vulnerable for a time in other words? Yes, the grouping is fairly fluid, the spokesman conceded. It is my experience that a lot of adults coming before courts are vulnerable, people who would be much better dealt with under treatment programmes, rather than brutalised in the courts system. I agree with the helpline. My problem with the campaign is how it attempts
Is it time the Council took charge of the National Park? Killarney’s Rhododendron problem got a huge airing in the Irish Times at the weekend, and the long article compiled over two years was the most read. However, it made depressing enough reading. As we know, the thing is now out of control and is everywhere - and the tragedy is that it could have been halted. Outgoing Councillor John Joe Culloty’s motion at the last meeting of Kerry County Council on Monday, calling on the Department of Heritage to provide extra staff for the Killarney National Park was therefore timely.
The total number of rangers available to the whole of the Killarney District, which includes the 10,236 hectare Killarney National Park and areas outside it like the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, is seven according to the Department. But John Joe’s figures are more reliable – there are just three rangers in the park which will decrease to two shortly. In contrast, the 707 hectares in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, managed by the OPW, has a ranger staff of 11 and is undergoing a huge re-imagining, as this column recently revealed. Two posts have not been taken up and a new panel must be established,
to limit itself to “vulnerable” adults. I think we should have that helpline for all adults. The dogs on the street have always known adults as well as children need to be minded. Often they need to be minded from the most respected professions, the organisations and institutions. There used to be a much more common word for “abuse” - it was called “taking advantage of”. I am afraid adults across our society, not just “vulnerable” adults are taken advantage of. It is a rampant business. Our society’s financial building blocks, and its marketing relatives, are to take advantage of others. Persistent advertising – it does not have to be false to be abusive – looks to take advantage of all adults; bank policies, insurance companies, landlords, accountants, lawyers, medics and others can all take advantage - and have been found to do so. And what about the lack of housing for our young adults, or the talking up and the robbing of our students by third level colleges for courses of dubious value? What about being pestered by those bloody phone calls telling me my internet is out of order in the hope I will panic and press a button and they can rob me? What about that? We are all vulnerable adults in need of protection, and more so than ever these days. he told us. There is a huge volume of work by volunteers, but the park now has no tradesmen, no painters, carpenters and no mason, which, as John Joe says, you would have thought is essential to the park. The bottom line is the park in Killarney is not being taken seriously and it has no one shouting for it. Kenmare Councillor, Dan McCarthy, gave voice to what many are saying locally. “Is it time this Council take charge of the National Park and put staff in there?” he asked. I say “hear hear” to that suggestion, but I would go further and say a whole new body made up of the NPWS, Kerry County Council, the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, the Men’s Shed and the volunteer Meitheal sector is needed.
Do good to feel good! Last week this column called for an updated list of sins. It may be a good idea to put virtue on the agenda this week. I read with great interest in last weekend’s Telegraph that a very posh private school in England was putting Aristotle on the curriculum. With concern about young people’s mental health on the rise, teachers in the UK have been introducing bursts of meditation, mindfulness and yoga sessions during class time. But Colfe’s school, a £17,600-a-year school in Greenwich, south London, has introduced a course in “Eudaimonia”, usually translated as human flourishing or happiness. It is such a pity in this country, focused as we are on badness, we have all got caught up in Karma – the idea that bad acts come back to haunt you. Old Ari’s idea was that good acts led to happiness. In other words, virtue is its own reward. And far from being something innate in us, we can all be taught how to do good and in doing so - be happier. Ryanair must have discovered this a few years back. I remember only too well standing in line to board like a passenger off a train in Auschwitz, and I mean no disrespect because this is what it reminded me of, dreading the storm trooper of an air hostess who might single me out for baggage measurement! And, I remember being uncomfortably aware that I was hoping she would pick on someone else. Then, just a few years ago, Ryanair discovered being nice pays and the air crews (well not all of them) put on a false smile, and put away the bag measurer. The course in England explores the importance of “virtuous behaviour” and examines how the “good life” can be achieved. There was a very high brow take on the thing in an Irish newspaper during the week, but the kernel of it is - the good you do returns to you because it makes you feel good!

Launch of Pat Delaney Memorial Golf Classic The official launch of the Pat Delaney Memorial Golf Classic took place on Friday, May 17 in Killarney Credit Union.
The inaugural golf classic is being organised by his colleagues in St Pats East Kerry where Pat was Vice President and former Chairman of St Pats East Kerry Hurling Club for a number of years prior to his passing on June 2, last year. “Pat was an instigator of and a familiar figure at the annual St Pats golf classic, meeting and greeting competitors as
they arrived at the Ross Golf Club,” Pat O’Brien of East Kerry Hurling Club said. “He managed the finances, sourced teams, distributed the goody bags and score cards and did all the many little and large jobs attached to running a successful golf outing. It was an uncanny coincidence that Pat passed away on
the morning of last year’s golf classic, and it is a fitting tribute to mark his passing by organising this event in his honour,” he said. Killarney Credit Union have sponsored the Memorial Cup for presentation to the winners of the golf classic. The event is a three-man scramble over 18 holes at Ross Golf Club, Killarney, and will be held on Saturday, June 1, commencing at 8am. Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit
Union added that they are delighted to be associated with this event honouring the late Pat Delaney. “Pat was on the credit union board of directors for five years and played a vital role in the development of the credit union. He was held in very high esteem by board, management and staff, and always gave generously of his time to the work of the credit union. He is sorely missed by all who knew him, and this event is a wonderful dedication to his memory,” he said. Death of Great Southern Hotel "father figure" Colleagues at the Great Southern Hotel have this week paid tribute to PJ Harnett (91) who died on Friday.
EXHIBITION: Mary O’Sullivan from Park Road, will feature in a national photographic exhibition celebrating 10 years of Genio.

PJ, who gave over 40-years’ service as head porter at the hotel, died peacefully in the loving care of the staff of St Columbanus Home, Killarney. Having finished school, PJ worked with Kerry County Council as a ganger and later as a plate layer with CIE, a job his father had also undertaken. In 1951, he came to Killarney, having got seasonal work with the Cahernane Hotel while still living in Lixnaw before joining the team at the Great Southern Hotel. “PJ worked at the Great Southern for over 40 years and throughout this time he had a huge impact on guests and staff members alike. “Our condolences go out to his family at this time on Killarney’s sad loss,” Ettienne Van-Vrede, CEO of the Hayfield Collection, the current owner of the hotel, said. “He was a wonderful character, devoted pioneer and a fantastic music man and he especially loved playing the accordion. He always returned to his home place of Lixnaw as often as he could,” said former colleague Martina O’Leary. “He loved to share stories with staff members about by-gone days – polish-

ing the shoes at night-time and lighting the fireplaces in the bedrooms. He was a father figure to all of the staff and was hugely respected by all within the hotel. He was a very sincere and genuine man who took pride in his job.” PJ was predeceased by his wife Kathleen. He is survived by his two sons Padraig and Brendan and sadly missed by his daughters-in-law Kathleen and Maura, his grandchildren David, Mark, Edel, Robbie and Seán, sisters Mary (Behan, Tralee) and Phil (Deevy, Listowel).
A Killarney woman who suffered from mental health issues as a teenager will feature as part of a national photographic exhibition to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Genio, a notfor-profit agency that helped fund her recovery. | By Sean Moriarty Mary O’Sullivan, from Park Road, experienced significant mental health challenges from her late teens which challenges meant her time in university was cut short. She spent a number of years struggling with her health and unable to engage in work or education. The first step on her recovery journey was when she joined the Kerry Peer Support Network in 2013. The Tralee-based organisation is funded by the HSE and Genio, a notfor-profit charity that works with people living with disabilities, mental health difficulties, dementia, and those who are long-term homeless in Ireland, is celebrating 10 years and has collaborated with photographer Ruth Medjber to create the exhibition ‘Facing Change’. The exhibition features 10 portraits of inspiring people from the four corners of Ireland, from a variety of
backgrounds and across ages and genders. They have all been supported to overcome personal challenges. “Having come from a dark place, experiencing mental health difficulties, my recovery began from being part of a recovery group, Kerry Peer Support Network set up by Brenda Healy in 2012,” Mary told the Killarney Advertiser. “Attending and participating in this group greatly empowered my personal journey in recovery. We hold a recovery meeting each Wednesday in Rahoonane Community Centre, Tralee, from 10.30am to 11.30am, with teas and coffees after. The group provides people with mental health difficulties a safe and beneficial space to listen and share. The group was set up initially on a sixweek trial and is still going strong.” The exhibition began its national tour last weekend at Dublin’s Gallery of Photography and will now travel around the country.

There was a great celebration on Tuesday evening - 43 years of Coyne family hospitality in Killarney - on the balcony of the International Hotel. A team of chefs were flipping burgers and basting wings in glorious sunshine, while a Tom Cruise style mixologist was giving it large on the cocktails. Overlooking Kenmare Place and Killarney House was definitely the perfect setting to celebrate 43 years of Coyne family hospitality in Killarney, and the sun shone on all the staff, family and friends joining in the festivities. Established as a hotel in 1906, the International Hotel came under the stewardship of Sean and Frankie Coyne in 1976 and they are very proud of the team that continue to make the hotel as popular with visitors today as it has been for more than a century. “Frankie and I are delighted to still be here after all these years and that this Grand Old Lady is still doing what Killar-
ney is famous for, welcoming visitors,” Sean, who enjoyed the day immensely, said. Guests on the evening included many of the staff, past and present, and friends who wished Sean, Frankie and their families well for the season ahead, and the years to come.

Gneeveguilla pupils ‘mop up’ with water award
Pupils from Gneeveguilla National School were honoured for their efforts in promoting water conservation and awareness at the An Taisce Green-Schools regional awards in Little Island, Cork. The school was amongst the 119 schools nationwide to receive a Green Flag under the ‘Water’ theme, which looks at developing awareness around water conservation and how to effectively manage this important resource in schools and at home, and is sponsored by Irish Water. “We are very proud of what the school has achieved,” said Gneeveguilla National School Green Schools coordinator Denise O’Connor. “This is down to
the hard work of the kids and teachers over the last two years. We reduced the amount of water we are using but kept up the amount of general recycling at the same time.” This is the sixth year of the partnership between Irish Water and Green-Schools to promote water conservation. Over 1,000 schools across the country have attended interactive Water Workshops and Walk for Water Events since 2013.

Thursday night was a star-studded occasion in Killarney Community College as it was an opportunity to honour students who excelled throughout the year. Teachers, students, parents and distinguished guests assembled for the occasion which has now become an annual tradition in the college. Awards were presented across a range of categories: academia, technology, culture, leadership, ethos, sports and extra-curricular activities amongst others. “It is always a great evening and an opportunity to honour those who have excelled,” Principal Stella Loughnane said. On the night, there was an array of special guests including Pat O’Shea, Gaelic football manager from Killarney and Coaching and Games Manager for football in Munster, who is a past pupil of the school. Colm McEvoy, who is the CEO at Kerry ETB, praised the college on its work ethic and complimented all involved on their high standard of work. Roisin Wall was voted by the teachers as the ‘Student of the Year’ and also received the Senior Sports Awards as recognition of her outstanding contribution to sport in the college and in her respective clubs.
“During her five years in the school she has endeared herself to everyone through her commitment, pleasant disposition, work ethos and involvement with all areas of school life.” The prestigious ‘Principal’s Award’ went to Evan Kissane for his overall contribution to the school. “Evan has led the way by showing his commitment to his studies, demonstrating that dedication, hard work and a sense of purpose is a lifelong skill that can achieve so much.” Maksims Orpus won an award in the ‘Junior Sports’ category in recognition of his sporting prowess. Esel Acun won the ‘Senior Arts Awards’, while a number of students who were part of the choir since they joined the college in First Year received the ‘Senior Music Award’. Cycle and coffee raises €13k for palliative care The family of the late Breeda McCarthy from Milltown, who organised an 80km cycle through Kenmare and Kilgarvan, have raised almost €13,000 for charity. Up to 30 friends and family set off last Saturday in an event organised by her brother Bill Lyne for the palliative care unit in Tralee. After the cycle the group hosted a coffee morning, sponsored by Daly’s SuperValu and Sheahan’s Centra, at the Killarney Avenue Hotel to raise additional funds. “We are so grateful to all of the staff of the centre and are now hoping to help

ensure they never have to close their doors to families who may need them in the future,” Bill said. “This centre does not receive Government funding and therefore relies on fundraising and public donations. I hope to make it an annual event and continue to support the centre as long as we can. Tears and laughter for former Loreto classmates It was a very special gathering in one Killarney hotel on Saturday night, as classmates reunited to reminisce about their former school days.
It was an emotional occasion with plenty of tears and laughter for the 1960 Loreto Convent class, as many hadn’t seen each other since their school days. The reunion was organised by Kathleen Burns who chose The International Hotel as its owned by her former classmate, Frankie Tuohy. “There were lots of laughter and some tears,” Frankie told the Killarney Advertiser. “Kathleen
would have been in touch with most of us over the years and she pulled it all together. For many of us, it was the first time we would have seen each other in 60 years, but everyone was looking so well,” she said. “Six of the girls travelled from Dublin. Kathleen came from Limerick but she spent 37 years in South Africa.”

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Texture is as important as colour in your garden Colour is an important part of any garden, indeed, many of us think that it is one of the most important ingredients of a beautiful garden. It is certainly a large part, and in a previous article I touched on the psychology of colour, and the way in which it works. This week I am going to talk a little about texture. Texture adds movement and interest to a garden, as well as adding to its theme and continuity in the same way as colour achieves this. There are many textures in the plant world - from the velvety leaves of lamb’s ear (Stachys byzantina), to the smooth petals of roses, the hairiness of oriental poppy leaves, the wispiness of grasses and so on. The most obvious non-colour trait of most plants are the leaves, in particular, their size. Size matters in the garden – large leaves, like warm colours tend to jump towards you. On the other hand, small leaves, or grasslike foliage moves away from the viewer and creates the illusion of distance. So, if you have a narrow border, plant grasses such as Miscanthus or Bamboo towards the rear in order to create the illusion of depth. Keep larger leaved plants, such as Bergenia, Hosta or Alchemilla to the front. In the same way, smooth leaved plants tend to create distance, while coarse leaved varieties come closer. To put this theory into context: black bamboo, Phyllostachys nigra is quite tall, narrow and fine leaved, ideal for the back of a border. Oakleaved hydrangea, Hydrangea quercifolia, has large coarse leaves
and is better suited for the middle of a border, surrounded by plants with similar sized leaves for blending and continuity, or surrounded by smaller leaved plants as a contrast. Acanthus has large leaves, but they are smooth and a fresh green colour. They are excellent plants in the middle of a shady border as their size brings them forward, but their texture and colour keeps them visually at a distance. Leaf size can be the main feature of many plants, a few examples are Rodgersia, which has large, coarse horse chestnut shaped leaves, Gunnera, which has very large leaves, we all know it – Muckross Gardens are home to a large clump, Darmera, which has large round leaves, to name but a few. These plants are ideal grown as specimens, where their leaves are welcomed as a feature. On the other hand, Eucalyptus French bleu has beautiful delicate foliage, Stipa gigantica is a fine leaved grass with soft, shimmering flower heads, and Pittospoum tennuifolium ‘Silver Sheen’ has tiny leaves arranged like beads on black stems. These plants are often better used as background and filling as they are unobtrusive. They create peace and softness, while large leaves create drama and demand attention. As with colour, repeating plants at regular intervals, or repeating patterns of plants, adds to the harmony, and overall effect of your garden. Foliage is not to be underestimated, it is beautiful and interesting in its own right, as well as creating the backdrop for colour and flower.

Singers raised the roof – and €2k for charity! Singers not only lifted the roof at a recent charity concert but also raised a massive €2,000 for two charities. | By Michelle Crean The Blackwater Singers, with special guests ‘Finding Your Voice’ Killarney Ladies Singing Group and Soprano and Musical Director Mary Culloty O’Sullivan, recently entertained a large crowd with a night of song in Blackwater Tavern. The singers received a standing ovation after the grand finale ‘Ireland’s Call’. The charity chosen by the Blackwater Singers was Our Lady's Children’s Hospital Crumlin as one of the Blackwater Singers, Tess O’Connell's granddaughter Amy had life-saving heart surgery there. The Killarney Singers charity was Autism, to get a secure home for Noah Buckley, a Tralee boy who has Autism and is a flight risk. Mary Culloty O’Sullivan spoke at the start about Noah and the level care he needs 24/7 to keep him safe. On the night, Donal
O'Connell spoke about his daughter Amy's open heart surgery in Crumlin Children's Hospital, the wonderful care she received and the miraculous recovery she made. Her condition will require further surgeries as she grows. “There were some fantastic raffle prizes which were all donated, so every penny raised went to the two charities,” Mary Culloty O’Sullivan explained. Spokesperson for the Blackwater Singers Mary O’Neill added many thanks to all who supported the event so generously and to members of Blackwater Women's Group who sold tickets and served refreshments after the performance. “The Blackwater Singers are taking a break for the summer months, but classes will resume in October. New members can join the group in the autumn with another performance planned for December.”

read Forgotten Revolution: The Limerick Soviet 1919 By LIAM CAHILL PRICE: €15 Former RTÉ journalist turned historian, Liam Cahill, has published a new book telling the forgotten story of the deep involvement of workers and their trade unions in the struggle for Irish Independence in the years 1916 – 21. The book takes as its starting point the Limerick General Strike, or Limerick Soviet, of April 1919, when 14,000 workers protested against the imposition of military law on the city. The British Government imposed severe regulations following the shooting dead of a policeman and an IRA prisoner during a rescue attempt at a local hospital. Workers were required to get a military pass and go through checkpoints four times a day. Limerick United Trades and Labour Council rejected the restrictions and, instead, took over the running of the entire city for a
fortnight, including printing their own currency and newspaper. The strike received worldwide coverage in newspapers and newsreels and became known internationally as the Limerick Soviet. Liam Cahill presented a copy of his book to President Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin. Priced at €15, including a map, chronology of events and many photographs never published before.

thousands of people in Ireland affected by the condition, including Shane’s cousin, Mary Evans. Mary made the trip to New York and met Shane at the finish line in Brooklyn. “Shane is incredible, I am very proud of Shane and all of his achievements.
Many people expressed doubt that Shane would achieve this extraordinary feat, but I never doubted him,” said Mary. Finn will now turn his attention to a gala victory dinner at the Killarney hotel on June 14.
Earlier this month the group had threatened to terminate provision of services due to a €2m HSE funding shortfall. Rehab provides vital services to 3,000 adults and children with disabilities across 147 services in 26 counties, this includes 61 people with various physical and intellectual disabilities at Blennerville just outside Tralee. “We welcome the fact that we have reached a resolution and that we can now continue to provide these vital services to the people of Kerry who rely on them,” Rehab Group CEO, Mo Flynn, said. “The news will come as an enormous relief to the people in our services, their families and our dedicated staff who have worked so hard to campaign for the continuation of their services.”

Trump’s visit confirmed by White House “President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have accepted the invitation of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar of Ireland to visit Ireland while they are in Europe for a state visit to the United Kingdom and for events in the United Kingdom and France to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The President and Taoiseach will hold a bilateral meeting in Shannon on 5 June.” These are the words released to the world’s media on Wednesday night this week as the US Government confirmed what has been broadly speculated for the last few weeks.
The Irish Embassy in Washington said: “We welcome the announcement of the visit by the US President. Detailed arrangements around the visit will be made public in due course.” The US President will visit the UK as a guest of the Queen from June 3 to 5, Buckingham Palace announced in April. The visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, and Trump is also expected to visit France as part of the commemorations. The French celebration gets under-
way on June 6. So, by the process of elimination, it can be deduced that Trump will stop off at Shannon for a few hours to meet our Taoiseach, once the Queen of England is finished with him and in preparation for his day trip to Normandy. “This visit will put Ireland at the centre of world media attention and, as a result, it will create an opportunity to showcase the attractiveness of the West of Ireland, the Wild Atlantic Way and the strong US FDI located at Shannon,” Shannon Group, which operates Shannon Airport, said.

Lauda earned his place as one of the greatest sportsmen ever A few weeks ago, when golfer Tiger Woods won the US Masters Golf title after 11 years in the doldrums, it was billed as the greatest comeback in sports history.
GOING NATIONAL: Taoiseach Leo Varadkar seeing the pilot Keel-Castlemaine LIFT Scheme in operation in Keel recently with Minister Brendan Griffin, Tommy Griffin and some of the pilot volunteers, Jason Lenihan and Timmy Griffin.
Pilot rural transport scheme to go national A new national scheme has been announced following the success of the Keel-Castlemaine LIFT Scheme. The Local Individually Flexible Transport (LIFT) scheme was initiated by Minister Brendan Griffin and Tommy Griffin last February. Funding is being provided by the Department of Transport to pilot similar community transport services in each of the 15 Local Link Office areas, including Kerry, at a cost of €5,000 per project for a 12 month period. The grant aid is designed to provide a contribution towards the overall costs of running the service. The schemes will
be administered locally by the existing network of Local Link Offices, while overall management, funding and regulation will rest with the National Transport Authority (NTA). "Our Keel-Castlemaine LIFT Scheme is an outstanding success and a game changer for our community,” Minister Brendan Griffin said. “It's here to stay and I would be delighted to work with other communities here in Kerry who don't have existing commercial hackney or taxi services to assist them to avail of these new pilots.” A call for applications for both pilot schemes will be made by Local Link Offices next month.
It was far from it. Triple Formula 1 Grand Prix champion Niki Lauda, who died this week age 70, had a far greater claim to the greatest comeback of all-time. He was attempting to win his second F1 world title when he was almost killed in one of the most famous accidents in the history of motor sport. As his Ferrari caught fire after hitting a bank at high speed during the 1976 German Grand Prix, Lauda lay unconscious in the cockpit. Other drivers stopped and tried to help. One, Arturo Merzario, plunged into the flames to unbuckle the Austrian’s safety harness. Eventually he was extricated and taken to hospital, where he was treated for burns so severe that he was given the last rites. At 27, Lauda was young and fit. But his physical toughness was nothing compared to the mental strength that ena-
bled him to survive not just that night but the weeks of treatment that included the reconstruction of his badly burnt eyelids with skin from behind his ears. Half of one of those ears had also been incinerated, but Lauda rejected surgery to rebuild it because it would increase the time before he could get back in the cockpit. Six weeks later, to general astonishment, finishing fourth in the Italian Grand Prix. By the end of the race, his unhealed wounds had soaked his fireproof balaclava in blood. When he tried to remove the balaclava, he found it was stuck to his bandages, and had to resort to ripping it off in one go. He went on to finish second in the drivers’ title race that season losing out to his great friend and rival James Hunt by one point - but took his second title a year later. Lauda’s return, six weeks after being almost burned to death surely counts as a greater comeback than someone who suffered a mere back injury and some marital issues in the 11 years between his major titles.
Farranfore new focal point officially opened A brand new focal point for Farranfore, the ‘Farranfore Railway Park’, was officially opened on Sunday. Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, John Sheahan, did the honours, Farranfore resident Jerome Crowley spoke about the history of the railway in the area, while parish priest Fr Tadhg O Dochartaigh, PP blessed the park. The park has been developed on the site around the old Railway water tower at the start of the Farranfore-Valentia line, Dan Ahern, Secretary of the Farranfore Development Association explained. “The site has been transformed into a small pocket style park with a paved path and meeting area centred around
the tower, providing Farranfore with a quiet communal space and helps highlight Farranfore's rich transport heritage.” The Farranfore Development Association would like to acknowledge the support and assistance of all the individuals, businesses and organisations over the last seven years in making the park a reality, namely the local community and business, CIE, Irish Rail, Kerry County Council, North East West Kerry Development, LEADER Programme 2014-2020, Rural Social Scheme, Clann Credo, Cara Credit Union, contactor Earthworks Profiling, Project Engineer Rory McGillicuddy, Project Legal Advisor Cormac Foley & Associates, he added.
Drama on the Eiffel Tower Rescuers successfully talked down a man who scaled the upper heights of the Eiffel Tower on Monday, forcing the monument’s evacuation, and handed him over to police. Television channels ran live shots as rescuers perched on the 324-metre (1,063foot) tower’s wrought-iron struts, just below the highest viewing platform, and
tried to persuade the unknown man to give himself up. The tower’s operator said he had entered the monument normally before climbing over the safety fencing on the second level and clambering up the outside of the tower. “At 9.30pm, Paris firefighters succeeded in reasoning with the individual and he is now in the hands of the competent authorities,” the operator said.

Rathmore school presented with ‘Health Promoting Schools’ flag Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, is the latest in the country to be presented with the Healthy Ireland ‘Health Promoting Schools’ flag. The flag is presented by the HSE to schools as an acknowledgement of their work in improving the health of their school communities. It was a combined effort by the Health Promoting Schools coordinators, Anne Cronin and Kate McCarrick, other staff members, Parents’ Council members, students and management, who helped the school achieve the recognition. The redevelopment of the school foot-
ball field, basketball courts, walkway, and courtyard area were part of the project. Artistic displays and an outdoor mural were also created by students, designed to promote positive well-being throughout the school. “It emphasises healthy eating within the school and promotes healthy eating amongst the student population,” Principal Denis Kerins said.

Unique sunrise and wellness event planned next week Locals and visitors alike are invited to a unique 4.30am sunrise and yoga experience at Dinis Cottage next week.
HEALTH: Brendan Kealy, Michael Lindsay and Ruth Allen are organising a wellness event in Killarney this June. Photo Michelle Crean
‘Éirí Na Gréine’, the Gaelic term for ‘sunrise’ takes place on Sunday, June 2 and promises to give participants an experience they’ll never forget - the beauty of a Celtic sunrise in the serenity of Killarney National Park. The event is being organised by Kerry footballer Brendan Kealy, Life Coach, Gym Owner and Personal Trainer Michael Lindsay, and Chartered Physiotherapist and Pilates Instructor, Ruth Allen.
The morning starts with a dynamic and energetic yoga class which will take place as the sun rises over the beautiful Lakes of Killarney. This will be followed by a meditative hike up the front facing Cardiac Steps of Torc Mountain led by Michael Lindsay. After the hike the group will return to the beautiful and serene setting of Dinis Cottage and enjoy a hearty and restorative breakfast overlooking the breath-taking Lakes of Killarney and surrounding mountains. Bookings can be made via www.eventbrite.ie. “How many people say they want to get
up and see the sunrise but don’t actually get around to doing it,” Brendan said. “This will provide a sunrise experience that has never been done before. “All three of us are working in the health and wellness business and the more we spoke about it , the more it made sense to do it,” Michael added. “We had a contact at Dinis and went from there. Last week Brendan and I did a dry run and the top of Cardiac Hill is a very different place as the sun rises.” The June 2 event is a one-off for now, but they said they could potentially add more dates and include more locations within Killarney National Park. During the hike Michael will take participants through some techniques to aid daily meditation and visualisation practices as well as some valuable stress management tips.

Record entry for 40th Ring of Kerry classic car run The Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club’s 40th annual Ring of Kerry run was deemed a huge success after record numbers of cars took part. Over 140 classic vehicles from 1908 to 1999 lined up outside the Gleneagle Hotel last Saturday morning ahead of the first leg to Derrynane. Stops along the way included the Red Fox Inn, Cahersiveen and Valentia Island. “We had nearly 144 cars in total, our best for seven years,” said club secretary Garrett Foley. “A lot of people supported the event because it was the 40th anni-
versary, but we are going from strength to strength too as a few years ago it was under consideration to make it just a one-day event.” New for this year was the overnight halt at the recently refurbished Derrynane Hotel. “The hotel staff were amazing. They put on overnight security for us and had marshals in the car park when we arrived,” added Garrett. “They did this off their own back, they even brought
forward the resurfacing of their car park, something they were doing anyway but did it earlier once they knew we were coming.” There were several awards handed out on Saturday night. The Mick Ahern Memorial Award went to club founding member Francie Cantillon. Mike Moloney from Tralee won the Myles Foley Memorial trophy in recognition for the work he does behind the scenes. The Keating Family Trophy, for the driver who went above and beyond to get their car to the event and overcome
adversity on the run went to Chris Foley. He drove his late father Myles’ 1952 Bentley Mk6, and despite an overheating engine and brake problems, he still made it to Derrynane. The driver of the best car on the run, Sheila Gleasure from Tralee, at the wheel of a very rare Bentley Continental, won the Colm Foley trophy. Two cars, the Foley family’s Bentley Mk6 and an 1946 Armstrong Siddeley driven by John Mitchell of the Kilgarvan Motor Museum, were the only two cars that took part that were also on the first run 40 years ago.

120 cars expected for Anne Casey Joy run this Saturday The ninth annual Anne Casey Joy Memorial Run takes place this Saturday. The popular school teacher from Beaufort passed away in 2010 and each year her brother Declan organises a classic run on her anniversary to raise funds for the Kerry Cork Health Link bus. Over 120 cars are expected to depart the Brehon Hotel on Saturday morning. The first leg is the Ring of Kerry in reverse with a stop at Castlecove before return-
ing to Killarney via Ballaghbeama and Caragh Lake – a total route of just over 160kms. “Over the years we have raised €25,000 and I will be hoping we can break the €30,000 mark this year,” Declan told the Killarney Advertiser. The run attracts a mixture of classic, modern and rally cars.

Scrapping provincials is the logical next step | By Adam Moynihan
As the newly-formed Fixtures Review Group goes about reforming the Gaelic football calendar, the GAA say that no idea is off the table. But will the much-maligned provincial championships avoid the chop? Here in Kerry our attitude towards the Munster Championship can be summed up by the following query, which is heard on every street, in every bar and in the car to every game at the dawn of summer. “Is it on in Cork or Killarney this year?” A Cork v Kerry football final is such a regular occurrence we simply assume that it will eventually come to pass, and our only concern is whether or not we’ll get a big day out in Killarney, or if a road trip over the border is on the cards. And with good reason. Kerry and Cork have completely dominated the Munster SFC since its inception in 1888. Between them, the pair have won a staggering 117 out of 130 finals and since 1935 their record has been even more ridiculous. Kerry and Cork have won 82 of the last 83 Munster finals, Clare’s shock victory over Kerry in 1992 the only anomaly over that period. Kerry’s haul of 80 championships dwarfs that of Cork, who have just 37. Cork’s haul of 37 dwarfs that of Tipperary, who have just 9. Tipperary’s haul of nine dwarfs that of Clare, who have just two. The other teams, Limerick and Clare, have just one Munster Championship apiece and both of those triumphs came before the turn of the 20th century (1896 and 1898 respectively). Kerry are currently seeking their seventh provincial title in as many years and ahead of next weekend’s semi-final against Clare, Peter Keane’s men

SPORT
24.05.2019 are 1/16 to lift the nameless trophy on June 22. All things considered, the Munster SFC is surely one of the most relentlessly uncompetitive competitions in world sport. The Scottish Premiership is the only tournament I can think of that can rival it for sheer predictability, but you might be surprised to learn that the Celtic/Rangers stranglehold is actually weaker than the one Cork and Kerry have in Munster. The Glasgow giants have claimed 104 out of 123 Scottish league titles (84.5%) while Cork and Kerry have won of 117 out of 130 Munster Championships (90%). And in Scotland, there’s a far more even split. Celtic have 50 and Rangers have 54. Their current period of domination has been longer, however: the last team outside of the top two to win the Scottish league was Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen in 1985.
LEINSTER AND CONNACHT
And this isn’t just a Munster problem. Fair enough, the Ulster Championship has a far more interesting and balanced past. Cavan have 37 (36 came between 1891 and 1969) and the rest of the championships have been fairly evenly divid-
ed amongst the rest. But both Leinster and Connacht are terribly top heavy. Galway and Mayo have won 93 of the 121 Connacht SFCs, with Roscommon accounting for 23 of the remaining 28. In Leinster, Dublin have won 57 titles including 13 of the last 16. If you add in Meath (21) that’s 78 out of 121. Outside of Ulster, 291 (or 77%) of the 372 provincial championships have been won by just six counties. And despite the growing level of professionalism that can be seen in traditionally weaker footballing counties, there’s no sign of this disparity changing any time soon. Mayo won five in a row between 2011 and 2015. Kerry can make it seven in a row next month. The Dubs are on for eight. Yet whenever the topic of restructuring the football championship rears its head, you have certain people who say that the provincial championships should be preserved at all costs. Why? Who is benefitting from these competitions? Are Limerick, Waterford, Tipp and Clare, who have one title between them in 83 years? Are Wicklow, Westmeath, Long-
ford, Carlow, Laois and Wexford, who have one title in 50 years? What about Sligo and Leitrim, who have sampled provincial glory just five times between them in 121 years? And it’s not just the small teams who suffer. It’s obviously great to be winning but there’s a very strong argument to be made that teams like Kerry and Dublin aren’t actually gaining anything from the provincials either. The National League final was played on March 31. The first round of the Super 8 fixtures will take place on July 13. In Kerry’s case, that’s 15 weeks with just two games, neither of which will come against Division 1 opposition, in between. Up in Ulster they say we have it handy down here in Kerry but I have no doubt whatsoever that Peter Keane would much rather have regular (or at least competitive) games as he prepares his squad for the business end of the season. Jim Gavin likewise. The fact of the matter is that the provincial championships are not benefitting the vast majority of counties. They are largely uncompetitive and frequently unexciting, and their prestige has un-
67
doubtedly plummeted over the course of the last two decades. You would nearly be blue in the face from saying it but the National League works because teams are grouped based on their ability. Apart from geography, there’s no good reason for Dublin (57 Leinster titles) to be competing with the likes of Wicklow (zero Leinster titles). Thankfully, there now appears to be genuine willingness on the part of the GAA to revamp the championship. A Fixtures Review Group is being set up and it has been agreed that no idea will be off the table. Encouragingly, the Club Players Association, who have for a number of years lobbied for a solution to the current fixtures crisis, will be represented on the committee. In a recent proposal, I suggested disconnecting the provincials from the All-Ireland Championships and playing them separately in February, but this would only be for the sake of compromise. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if I can see the GAA (and the provincial councils) agreeing to scrap them altogether, although looking at the numbers, it does appear to be the next logical step.

Five-star Celts smash Dynamos in cup final GREYHOUND BAR KO CUP FINAL ____________________________________________________________________________
Killarney Celtic

MOUNTHAWK PARK S MCCARTHY 24, 54 • SPARLING 43 • O’MAHONY 52 • O’SHEA 88
Killarney Celtic retained the Greyhound Bar KO Cup on Sunday last with a dominant 5-0 victory over Tralee Dynamos in Mounthawk Park. | By Adam Moynihan The Hoops were strong favourites heading into this decider and they were far too strong for Dynamos on the day, first half goals from Stephen McCarthy and Wayne Sparling leaving Brian Spillane’s side in a commanding position at the break. There was no reprieve for the Tralee club in the second half as Celtic added three more goals to seal the tie and leave themselves just 90 minutes away from an impressive second consecutive league and cup double. Celtic will secure that double-double if they defeat Castleisland in the league final this weekend. Last Sunday’s cup final went pretty much to script. Dynamos held their own in the first quarter, occasionally threatening – or at least threatening to threaten – from set pieces, but Celtic’s back four of Gary Keane, Stephen O’Mahony,
John McDonagh and Brendan Falvey never appeared to be unduly troubled. Striker Stephen McCarthy looked lively at the other end and he produced a moment of magic to break the deadlock in the 24th minute, gathering with his back to goal before turning and firing in an unstoppable strike from the edge of the area. The Killarney outfit played some decent football throughout the remainder of the opening period and they almost doubled their advantage in the 35th minute when Gary Keane’s driven effort clipped the top of the crossbar. That second goal did eventually come as the first half drew to close, McCarthy unselfishly squaring for the unguarded Wayne Sparling who had all the time in the world to apply the finish from close range. Already two goals and two injured starters down, Dynamos were certainly in an unenviable position heading to the interval and unfortunately for them, the

game was over as a contest just 19 minutes into the second half. Experienced defender Stephen O’Mahony, who lined out for Tralee Dynamos in his younger days, got his head to Gary Keane’s corner to make it 3-0 and a few short moments later, the irrepressible McCarthy recovered from a strong challenge to curl a beautiful 20-yard strike into the top corner of the Dynamos net. Hard-working forward Cathal O’Shea rounded off the scoring with a tidy finish in the 88th minute as the Celts romped home to another cup final triumph. Captain John McDonagh accepted the trophy on behalf of his teammates but there wasn’t much time to celebrate as attention quickly turned to this Sunday and the league final against Castleisland.
The reigning champions will be overwhelming favourites to prevail once again in the league finale, though they are likely to face a strong challenge from an Island side who finished just four points behind them in the Premier A. Kick-off on Sunday is at 3pm. Da Silva claims gold at British Open | By Adam Moynihan
Killarney-based competitor Wilson Da Silva recently proved his mettle across the water as he claimed gold at the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu British Open, which was held over three days in the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. The Kerry pool team who won the All-Ireland Intermediate Plate. Tim Winters (Brosna), Philip Lawlor (Tralee), Dave Curtin (Brosna), Mike Moriarty (Brosna), Niall Marshall (Currow), Aidan O'Sullivan (Rathmore), Derek Hasell (Waterville), Dane O'Donoghue (Killarney), Margaret O Driscoll (Headford) and John Lynch (Killarney).
All-Ireland glory for Kerry pool team Kerry’s top pool stars were right on cue last weekend as they clinched the county’s first ever national title at the Irish Pool Association All-Ireland Championships. The Kerry side recovered from a poor start at the INEC to beat Cork (9-8) and Mayo (9-6) and book their place in the All-Ireland Men’s Intermediate Plate final. Leitrim proved to be no match for The Kingdom in the decider as the lads and lady with green and gold on their waistcoats prevailed with eight frames to spare (9-1) Kerry had teams competing in the Men’s Intermediate, Men’s Junior, U18s and Over 50s team events, as well as having players participating in the singles competitions. The Kerry teams on the day were made up of players from all over county with representatives from Killarney, Kilcummin, Rathmore, Killorglin, Currow, Scartaglen, Brosna, Waterville, Castleisland and Tralee. The Kerry Over 50s team reached the All-Ireland semi-final after wins over Meath, Laois, Limerick and Tyrone, before being defeated to Wexford in the last four while the U18s had wins over Wexford and Westmeath. Unfortunately, defeats to Limerick and Tyrone mean’t they didn’t make it out of the group stage. In the singles, Margaret O’Driscoll (Headford), reached the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland Ladies competition where she was defeated by multiple Irish Ladies champion Sandra Bryan of
Wexford on a 6-3 scoreline. Margaret recently qualified for the Irish Ladies team and will represent her country at the World 8 Ball Pool Championships, which take place in Blackpool in June. Joining Margaret will be up and coming young Kerry stars Aaron Templeman (Brosna), Luke Regan (Castleisland) and Pierce Lynch (Killarney), all of whom will be playing for the Ireland U18s at the World Championships. Winning the All-Ireland Intermediate title is just the latest achievement in what has been a great year for the Kerry Pool Association. Mike Moriarty (Brosna) and Philip Lawlor (Tralee) flew the flag at at the European Championships where they won the Men’s European C Team event with Team Ireland. The recent success is no fluke; it’s down to a lot of time, effort and commitment being put in by individuals in terms of creating practice facilities for themselves and putting in hours and hours of practice in on the table. All the players involved hold a great passion for the game and their rewards this year have been well deserved. The Kerry Pool Association encourage anyone with an interest in joining to contact their Facebook page (Kerry Pool). The IPA All-Ireland Championships Festival of Pool took place over five days in the INEC from May 15-19. It was the third year in succession that the INEC hosted the event and over 600 competitors from all over the country competed on 50 pool tables.
Da Silva, who has lived in Killarney for over 10 years, emerged victorious in his division after a string of impressive performances and he later took part in the ‘Absolute’ (open weight) category, winning three fights en route to a third place finish. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-orientated martial art/combat sport that evolved from Japanese roots in Brazil in the 1920s. Much of the technique of BJJ is centred around the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from where the opponent can be rendered harmless. “It felt good to be able to go back there and win my division without letting my opponents score points on me,” Da Silva said. “It was my second time winning gold in the British Open – I also won in 2017. “I definitely would have loved to have won first place in the ‘Absolute’ but I’m still happy with my performance. I believe that consistency, hard work and dedication pays off. It’s never too late to go after your dreams.” Despite his continued success, Wilson admits that the cost of travelling to

and taking part in these tournaments is a concern. “If any company or business would perhaps have interest in sponsoring me in future competitions, that would be awesome,” he said. As well as competing, Da Silva, a native of Pernambuco in north-western Brazil, coaches BJJ at the Movement & Fitness Club/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Capoeira Academy, which is located on New Street.

Two major events in the pipeline for Irish rallying The proposal to run two major rally events in Ireland next year or the year after is likely to cause upheaval in the local rally calendar. | By Sean Moriarty Rumours persist in Britain that Rally GB will move to Northern Ireland next year, and this is expected to be confirmed in the next few days. The British round of the World Rally Championship is set to run this year over
the first weekend of October and if it was to move to the island of Ireland next year it would have a knock-on effect on the Cork '20' and Donegal Harvest Rally. Meanwhile, Motorsport Ireland is trying to put together a plan to revive the fiveday Circuit of Ireland Rally. This event will not take place until 2021 at the ear-
liest. The governing body wants each club in the country to organise the running of one stage and link them all up to create a four or five-day tour of Ireland. The event could not use the Circuit of Ireland title as that is owned by the same individual behind the plan to bring Britain’s round of the World Rally Championship to Northern Ireland. Last week the Motorsport Ireland Rallies Commission met with most of the rally-organising clubs in the republic to
gather support for their ambitious project. A vote was taken on whether or not a Tour of Ireland rally event was wanted. Ten of the clubs present said they wanted to see more exploration work done, ten more were opposed to the plan and one abstained. Killarney and District Motor Club did not send a delegate to the meeting. The North Kerry-based Kerry Motor Club voted to support the idea and to look for more investigations into the viability of the plan. Finding a slot in an already packed calendar is going to be one of the biggest stumbling blocks and Kerry Motor Club made it clear that this rally could not take place at the traditional Easter date as this would fall between the Circuit of Kerry and the Rally of the Lakes, and the new event would impede on the current local rallies in terms of manpower and road closing applications. Kerry already hosts four road-closed rallies each year. Organisers of the Cork '20' event are looking at a new date in August, potentially freeing early October for either one of the two new rallies. Finding competitors with an appetite for such an event was also discussed, as were logistics with suggestions that rally cars would be trailered on longer road sections. Motorsport Ireland will host another national meeting in July where they will present a draft calendar of 2020 and 2021 events.

Adrian claims top prize in Brian James fantasy football league Soccer aficionado Adrian Jasinski was the toast of the town this past week as he scooped a €250 voucher for Brian James for topping the 2018/19 Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Football League. After a gruelling nine-month campaign, Adrian finished first out of 479 competitors to eventually secure first place and claim the coveted top prize. Jasinski had an incredible season and averaged an impressive 66.1 points over the final 10 weeks.
And Adrian’s tally of 2,480 points wasn’t just remarkable by local standards. Of the 6.3 million players who took part in Fantasy Premier League globally this season, the Killarney man finished 548th overall. He also finished 23rd overall in Ireland.
Adam Moynihan (Killarney Advertiser) and Monika Brogowska (Brian James) present Adrian Jasinski with his winning prize, a €250 voucher for Brian James.
Adrian came first in Serie A-dvertiser with 40 points to spare over second place Andy Twomey while Ryan Scott was a further 27 points back in third. On behalf of the Killarney Advertiser, Adam Moynihan congratulated Adrian on his fantastic victory. “I say this every year but I think people who don’t play, don’t realise it: it takes a lot of work and know-how to succeed at fantasy football. Fair play to Adrian for putting in the time and effort. He must know the Premier League like the
back of his hand.” Adam also said that the Killarney Advertiser were extremely grateful to tournament sponsors Brian James who presented vouchers worth €50 to each Manager of the Month throughout the season and, of course, the grand prize of a €250 voucher to the overall winner. Shane Lynch and Conor Healy were named joint Hardest Working Managers for the third year in a row. There is no prize for this award.
