PAGESIX Town saddened to learn of Donie Sheehan's passing SUPPORT

A wave of sadness swept across the town yesterday morning (Thursday) with the news that bona-fide town legend Donie Sheahan had passed away. He was aged 95. There isn’t one aspect of town life that doesn’t have Donie’s influence on it. Best known as one of the town’s leading pharmacists, he was also embedded in the history of Dr Crokes GAA Club and Killarney Racecourse. Donie, from Main Street and Lewis Road, had many claims to fame; he was born on the same day as Queen Elizabeth of England, April 21, 1926, was the winner of a County Championship medal with Dr Crokes in 1951, as a coach he led East Kerry to an All-Ireland club title in 1971 before joining Micko Dwyer’s backroom team during the Golden Years of Kerry football in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and was a successful racehorse trainer and owner. He was also a key figure behind the development of Fitzgerald Stadium. He has been described by the business community as a "larger-than-life personality" who contributed enormously to the commercial life of the town where he ran a very busy pharmacy at 34 Main Street since 1953. “Above everything else, Donie Sheahan was a true gentleman, a warm personality and a great wit and so many people loved meeting him on his travels. He will be greatly missed,” Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Niall Kelleher, said. “Sheahan’s Pharmacy is a real landmark in Killarney and Donie was always a welcoming presence behind the counter where his experience and expertise helped many people in so many ways for close on 70 years. His son Liam, and grandson William, are still providing that wonderful service to the local people and to visitors, and our thoughts are very much with the extended Sheahan family at this sad time.” Donie's Killarney life began when he was appointed the pharmacist for the Killarney District Hospital and St Columbanus’ Home in the 1950s. From then on he played a leading role in the commercial development and sporting excellence of the town.

him, even young jockeys, 17 or 18-yearsold, had huge respect for him. Some days I used to go up town for lunch and he would drag me into the back kitchen of the pharmacy and we would sit there and watch the racing and have a sandwich. It’s a sad day and he will be missed.” This time last year, Donie was unable to attend the annual Listowel Harvest Racing Festival in the town of his birth due to COVID-19 travel and crowd gathering rules - the first time that he missed the meeting in over 80 years. Two of Donie’s most-famous horses were 'Dromhall Lady' and 'For William'. The latter finished second on two occasions in the Kerry National Handicap Chase, the biggest race of the annual Listowel Harvest Festival. Donie passed away yesterday – the day after the 2021 Kerry National took place.

FUNERAL

SADNESS: The town was clouded in sadness yesterday (Thursday) as news of the death of town legend Donie Sheahan became known.

DR CROKES

Officials from his beloved Dr Crokes described him as a giant of a man whose words of wisdom will be missed by all associated with the black and amber. Only last Sunday, days before his passing, he placed a call to club chairman Matt O’Neill to get the weekend results. Donie was the most recent Club Patron, the highest office bestowed upon a member of the club, but served in several key roles within the club, including over 20 years as chairman. “Our condolences are extended to the entire Sheahan family,” Mr O’Neill told the Killarney Advertiser. “His proudest moment was the club winning the 1992 All-Ireland, he never thought he would see the day. He was involved in every aspect of the club and never missed an

AGM. It was never a proper AGM without Donie’s input and wise words. He had a huge presence around the club, a giant of man and he will be sorely missed."

HORSE RACING

Donie will be missed at racecourses all over Ireland, particularly at his two home venues, Ross Road and Listowel. “He was also famous for his involvement in horse racing and he enjoyed nothing more than when the racehorses he owned competed in Killarney or in his native Listowel, often with great success,” added Mr Kelleher. Killarney Racecourse Manager Phillip O’Brien said he was an internal part of the racing scene, not just in Kerry, but all over Ireland and beyond. “Since I was a boy Donie was part of the racing scene,” he said. “Everyone knew

Family and close friends will gather at O'Shea's Funeral Home this evening (Friday) from 6pm to 8pm. Donie's Funeral Mass will take place in St Mary's Cathedral tomorrow morning (Saturday) at 10.30am, followed by burial in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery. His Requiem Mass will be livestreamed on www. churchservices.tv/killarneycathedral. Donie was predeceased by his beloved wife Carmel (née Dowling), and his sisters Sheila and Maureen, and his brother Tommie. He is survived by children, Liam, Kieran, Aileen, Kathryn and Paul, grandchildren Ciara, Dónal, William, Kevin, Fionán, Gráinne, Peter, Cathal, Caitríona, Eoin, Sinéad, Amy, Clodagh, Megan and Andrew, and great-grandchildren Amelia, Evie, Will, Daniel, James, Lyla and Eleanor. He is also sadly missed by his daughters-in-law Siobhán, Janet and Louise, son-in-law Seán, his sisters Catherine, Margaret and Anna, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and his pharmacy staff and colleagues.

Winner makes contact with National Lottery HQ | By Michelle Crean The €257,723 Lotto winner - who purchased their ticket in Carson’s Daybreak store in Beaufort - has this week made contact with National Lottery HQ.

THE REAL DEAL: Killarney man Luke Quinn, who is manager of the Kerry GAA Store, plans to send an official Kerry jersey to the Governor of New York. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy

Real Kerry jersey to be sent to New York governor New York's newest governor - who has proud Kerry roots - is to receive a brand new "official" Kerry jersey after being pictured this week with a "knock off" version. | By Michelle Crean Killarney man Luke Quinn, who is manager of the Kerry GAA Store in the Outlet Centre, said that he will send an official county jersey to Kathy Hochul - after she was pictured with Taoiseach Micheál Martin holding a replica during a meeting on Monday. During his visit Mr Martin met with Hochul - now one of America's most powerful female politicians - but it turns out that the jersey, which was most likely supplied by Ms Hochul herself for the photo opportunity, was fake! "The store is going to send a Kerry jersey on behalf of the Kerry County Board," Luke told the Killarney Advertiser. "I heard about it [the fake jersey] on the day and it was all over Twitter. It generated a lot of interest. We sell them online at kerrygaastore.ie. In fact, we send a load of Kerry jerseys to America every day.

She had no excuse for not having the official Kerry jersey." He added that profits from the sales of fake jerseys make their way to other people's pockets. "There are a lot of non-licensed jerseys. Every jersey we sell goes back to the GAA. The knock offs go into someone else's pockets." Houchel, who has west Kerry relatives, took over as New York Governor on August 24 following the resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo. On his trip Mr Martin visited the 9/11 memorial site. He also laid six white roses on the names of each of the Irish-born victims. Taking to Twitter following the visit he said that he "enjoyed" meeting Ms Hochul. "We shared our experiences in tackling the pandemic, and the importance of connectivity between our two countries. We also discussed her proud Kerry roots, and her family’s love for the GAA."

The lucky ticket holder - who came within just one number of the €16,419,005 jackpot on offer in Saturday night’s draw - matched five numbers and the bonus and arrangements are now being made for them to claim their prize. Owner of the winning store, Melvin Carson, who is a fifth generation storekeeper in Beaufort village, was thrilled to hear that one of his customers had scooped the Lotto prize of €257,723. “My phone rang late on Saturday night and when I saw it was from the National Lottery, my heart nearly stopped because I knew I must have sold a big winner. What a story that would have been, to have a €16 million Euro winner in such a small Kerry village,” he

laughed. “It’s not the jackpot prize but it’s still a brilliant prize for one of my customers to win. We are a very small, close knit community down here in Beaufort and I can guarantee that whoever it is, it will be such a well deserving prize. We are a small local convenience store and post office with five employees so it’s a tremendous feeling here knowing that one of our customers is over a quarter of a million Euro richer. I know the entire village will be buzzing at this news so we wish them every bit of success with their win,” he said. The winning numbers were: 09, 14, 22, 24, 37, 44 and the bonus was 45. The winning ticket holder is advised to sign the back of their ticket and keep it in a safe place. There was no winner of Wednesday evening’s lotto draw, and the whopping €17 million jackpot rolls on to tomorrow night (Saturday) and customers are asked to avoid queues by purchasing their tickets in-store, online at www.lottery.ie or through the National Lottery App before 7.45pm.

LOTTO LUCK: Melvin Carson, owner of Carson’s Daybreak store in Beaufort, sold one of his customers a winning Lotto ticket worth €257,723 in last Saturday night’s draw.

Town makes Top 5 Best Places to Live Killarney has been named as one of the five Best Places to Live in Ireland 2021 with competition judges praising its stunning location, vibrancy, and culture of friendliness.

NEW ADDITION: St Brigid's students Ava O'Mahony and Anna Cashman pictured with the school's new therapy dog Zoomer.

Therapy dog begins first day of school

A four-month-old puppy is the latest addition to school life at one local secondary school this week and his homework is to help students and staff. | By Michelle Crean On Wednesday, there was great excitement as therapy dog Zoomer joined the school community at St Brigid's on New Road - the second post primary school in the county to welcome such a dog. It's part of the My Canine Companion (MCC) charity which has a number of therapy dogs in schools across the country. Deirdre Horgan from MCC paid a visit to schools looking for families for the charity's socialisation programme. Zoomer is a mix of a sheepdog and a poodle and Deirdre's dog Fifi is his mother. In May Fifi had 10 puppies all named with the letter 'z'. Just recently Fossa National School welcomed Zoomer's sister Zazu to their classrooms, and puppy

Zoro went to the CBS in Tralee. The dogs not only provide comfort and support to pupils and students with Autism but to all in the school. "There is an increasing body of research to support the benefit of a dog in school," Ber O’Connor, a teacher in St Brigid's, said. Zoomer will be under the guidance of Ms O’Connor and some Transition Year students who will undertake a specific training programme for the therapy dog. "The dog will be based in different rooms around the school but will have a timetable of interactions. We hope Zoomer settles in well and brings joy to many of our students lives. You can follow all the updates of Zoomer's life on Instagram by following @zoomersbk or his TikTok account 'zoomerthepuppy'.

The other places to make the Top 5 are Clonakilty, Galway City, the village of Glaslough in Co. Monaghan and Waterford City. The Irish Times ‘Best Place to Live in Ireland’ competition, began in June when members of the public were invited to nominate their favourite place to live for the award. Over the course of the summer, more than 2,400 members of the public nominated 470 locations in every county in Ireland for the title. Two weeks ago the long list of Best 20 Places to Live in Ireland was published and now Killarney has made it through to the best five short list. The overall winner will be named next weekend. Each place was judged on criteria including, natural amenities, buildings, community initiatives and spirit, presence of clubs, societies and activities, good local services, diversity, a welcome for outsiders, transport links, employment opportunities, the price of property and housing supply, cost of living, digital links for distance working, safety and security. While the number of nominations was a factor in the selection of the top locations – Killarney received 31 - the quality of the place itself was the chief consideration.

DECISION

The panel of five judges – which includes

Mayo County architect Simon Wall, Monaghan GP Dr Illona Duffy, RTE Nationwide TV presenter Zainab Boladale, and Irish Times journalist Rosita Boland – spent hours reading and debating the entries, before selecting the Top 5. “In a stunning location, Killarney is a lively, bustling town, full of cafes, restaurants and bars. And because it is accustomed to visitors, it is part of the culture to be extra helpful to strangers. Everyone speaks to each other on the street. All the amenities, both natural and man-made, are impressive. It’s easy to see why people are proud of the area,” the judges said about Killarney. And this is what Sandra Dunlea said about the town in her nomination. “Killarney is a unique place to live, we have a wide range of schools, job opportunities and access to very good transport links, train, airport and great primary roads for bus and car. We live in the midst of 26,000 acres of protected national parkland, have a beautiful art school, a variety of dance and stage schools, GAA, soccer and water sports. We have a lovely town which has visitors through the year. We have a huge number of volunteers who dedicate their time to keeping our town and park clean and beautiful.” With the average house price of the last 50 sales in Killarney €266,000, the Chair of the Judging Panel, Conor Goodman, said that while property prices are just one of several measures the judges are applying in choosing the Best Place to Live in Ireland, in the midst of a housing crisis, they are an important consideration.

Stylish Miriam wows at the races When it comes to the style stakes, one local lady proved she's got it after winning the female Most Stylish Racegoer this week.

THE WRITE STUFF: As part of Culture Week, Creative Learning Writer, and Children's Author Olivia Hope, Siamsa Tíre, visited Lissivigeen National School for a series of creative writing workshops. Photo: Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan.

Lissivigeen pupils have the "write stuff"

Miriam Prendergast from Killarney was selected by fashion blogger and judge Emily O’Donoghue aka @fashionablyfortyish on Sunday, the opening day of the Listowel Harvest Racing Festival. Benny O’Keeffe from County Meath was also selected for his style and both winners each received a €400 cash prize, sponsored by McElligotts Tralee and Honda Ireland. Miriam wore a black bustier wide legged jumpsuit with belt, styled with a very feminine one sleeve off white blouse with ruched details. She both designed and made the outfit herself and paired it with a headpiece she borrowed from a friend who got it in MacBees Killarney. She finished her look with a pretty vintage bag. Benny wore a sky blue suit he purchased

in Burtons, paired with a merl grey waistcoat, set off with a soft pink shirt cleverly coordinated with a pink and grey check tie. He purchased his very dapper hat in the Ukraine. The runners-up in the ladies category each received a generous hamper from McElligotts Tralee with special thanks to McGuires Pharmacy Listowel. The runners-up in the gents category received tickets to the Sunday of the June Bank Holiday race meeting in Listowel in 2022. Of course, there is more to come in the style stakes with one of Ireland’s most prestigious best dressed events - the McElligotts Honda Ladies Day - making a most welcome return this year to the racecourse today (Friday), judged by style icon Celia Holman Lee, it has an overall cash prize fund of €1,000 and the winner will also receive the most amazing beauty hamper sponsored by McGuire's Pharmacy.

Lissivigeen National School pupils enjoyed a creative treat last Friday when they were visited by children's author Olivia Hope for a series of writing workshops to help inspire them. Fourth, Fifth and Sixth classes participated in activities around character creation, story development and storyboarding, all in keeping with the Irish folklore tradition and featuring spooky púcas and local landscape. Olivia also gave them an insight into her own storytelling journey and how the Killarney author came to be with the same publisher as JK Rowling. She spoke with enthusiasm about finding story ideas and inspiration all around her. Olivia said that she prefers to show children how to make stories, not just write them down, by highlighting the importance of children being able to tell their stories in a variety of ways, not just writing, but also through drawing, film, song and any art form that appealed to them. She says that we are encouraging pupils to be writers, film-makers, animators and artists, because, as she reminded them,

"It’s your story, so you have to tell it in your own unique way". Olivia, who currently works at Siamsa Tíre as a creative learning assistant, also gave pupils a behind-the-scenes insight into how she came to write the Samhain folklore tale for the highly anticipated art exhibition for children at Siamsa Tíre, 'A Way Home/Slí Abhaile'. Her visit also included a sneak preview of some of the art that will be displayed as part of the exhibition which launched yesterday (Thursday). The classes and their teachers certainly have a story or two to tell after Olivia Hope’s visit. Olivia Hope’s debut 'Be wild, Little One', illustrated by Daniel Egneus, will be published by Bloomsbury on May 12, 2022, and is available for pre-order in all bookshops.

Musician Liam O’Connor back and busier than ever Local musician Liam O’Connor has gone from zero to hero following the lifting on the ban on live music as a result of pandemic restrictions. | By Sean Moriarty On Saturday he played his first gig in over 18 months, next Friday he will release a new single, and before that he will play a special gig in London. Liam and his family played at the Kerry County Council organised ‘ANSEO’ concert in North Kerry that was run to coincide with the Listowel Harvest Festival last weekend. It was his first live show since he played at St Brendan’s College, Killarney when he shared the stage with special guest, former Irish rugby coach, Joe Schmidt. That event took place on March 11, 2020, the night before the country entered its first COVID-19 lockdown. The ‘ANSEO’ series of concerts signalled the return of live music in Kerry and the O’Connor family shared the stage with other local musicians like Tim O’Shea and his Afro Trad Ireland group. “People were delighted, they were mad for it, they were obviously missing it,” Liam told the Killarney Advertiser. “But they are not letting go just yet, they are still a bit hesitant.” This Sunday Liam heads to London were he will help Dan Tim O’Sullivan steer sheep over Southwark Bridge (see page 36 for more on this story). To cap an exceptionally busy period for the local accordion player, he has joined forces with Moya Brennan of Clannad fame. Brennan and O’Connor will release a new single – ‘Strong in Numbers’ on Friday next, October 1. They previously performed together at a concert in the Friary in 2017.

Coach operators plead for Government aid in budget | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney tour operator has called for the Government to provide further financial aid for the industry in light of an uncertain 2022 season. BACK AT IT: Liam O'Connor performed at the 'ANSEO' concert in Listowel last Sunday night after over 18 months of no work.

“It was such a positive experience for all of us we just had to repeat it,” he added. “So not only have we done this recording of ‘Strong in Numbers’ but we are planning to do the Friary again later this year. After that, I wouldn’t rule anything out.” Meanwhile, the ‘ANSEO’ series visits Killarney on Sunday night. The Fair Hill car park will host two shows featuring: The Gleneagle Concert Band; Pauline Scanlon with Mick Galvin; The Small Hours; The Rising; Cathal Flaherty and Truly Diverse.

He described to an Oireachtas Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sports and Media on Wednesday how a coach with just two American tourists and two staff is currently touring Ireland. Representatives from the Coach Tourism and Transport Council of Ireland (CTTC) including Mike Buckley of Kerry Coaches, were invited to outline the detrimental impact COVID-19 has had on the coach tour industry. Mr Buckley said he and his industry colleagues were desperate to highlight that Ireland was open for business and that the empty coach was an attempt by tour operators to prove how far they are willing to go to get this message out there. “There is a reticence by people who travel in large numbers, people are not buying,”

he told the meeting. “There is anecdotal evidence that one coach operator is touring Ireland with two passengers, a driver and a tour guide.” Mr Buckley said he was grateful for the previous support the industry had received but that funding stems back to the summer of 2020 and they were not included in the July 2021 round of funding. That money was put towards existing loans on buses and coaches and has now dried up. “It was like putting a bandage over a major bleed or haemorrhage,” he added. The CTTC said that the coach industry contributed €215 million to the economy in 2019, the last year full figures are available for. “Shops, cafes, hotels, attractions are hugely dependent on coach tours,” he added. Kerry Coaches, in peak times, employ up to 114 drivers and tour guides. “We are down to a skeleton staff,” he added.

Family to run in memory of the late Linda Eviston | By Sean Moriarty The family of a much-loved Killarney woman who passed away from cancer almost a year ago plan to run a marathon past her favourite local landmarks in her memory. Linda Eviston died on October 10 last after a long battle with cancer. Her husband Patrick and son Erik, with the support of her daughter Alannah, will run a 42.2km course, on the day before her anniversary to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society. The route will be based on landmarks that were an important part of Linda’s life. Starting from the family home in Dromkerry, before heading for the town centre

and passing the Eviston House Hotel, Linda’s grandmother’s home at Park Road, Linda’s childhood home and national school in Glenflesk, Loreto where Linda attended secondary school, back to Killarney and finishing at Linda’s pride and joy - Brook Lodge Hotel. “It is tough but we wanted to do something in Linda’s memory and help other people who might find themselves in similar circumstances,” Pat told the Killarney Advertiser. “We originally hoped to do the Dublin City Marathon but that got cancelled. This route is much better, but much tougher as it's more hilly.” All proceeds will be donated to the Irish Cancer Society and donations can be made via: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/inhonouroflinda.

MARATHON: Linda’s husband Patrick and son Erik will run a marathon (42.2 kilometres) on October 9, supported by daughter Alannah, family and friends, to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

Orienteering is a fantastic sport that allows you to build your skills and confidence, with all events having a variety of routes to cater for all levels.” To cater for physical distancing and Government guidelines, there are several staggered start times for participants to choose from, beginning at 6pm and the last group heading off at 7.30pm. With free t-shirts for all who sign up and ad-

ditional workshops onsite, from the likes of Leave No Trace Ireland, it is sure to be a fun and vibrant evening, all stemming from the start point at ANAM - Killarney’s Arts and Culture Centre. Places are limited for this event. Free online registration is available and those looking to attend are encouraged to book their place early to avoid disappointment. For more information, you can visit any of the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership social media accounts or go to www. sportireland.ie.

Killarney’s sole rep at Ploughing Championships | By Sean Moriarty Mike Brosnan was the only member of Killarney Ploughing Association to qualify for last week’s National Ploughing Association’s All-Ireland finals.

TURNOVER: Mike Brosnan competing in the National Ploughing Championships in County Laois last week.

Last weekend, Mike and his helper James Collins competed in the ‘Two-furrow mounted vintage category’ and he placed 12th in the country with a score of 146. Killarney Ploughing Association’s chairman Thomas Wharton was at the event

and witnessed Mike’s competition. “Mike got on very well considering the 18 months with no practice. He was up against the best of the best,” he said. Meanwhile, Killarney Ploughing Association is hoping to run its local championships in November. “We are very proud of Mike representing both Killarney and Kerry in the National Ploughing Championships,” the Association’s press officer Veronica Heaslip told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have no date yet for our local match as we haven’t had our AGM, but we are hoping for early November.”

POWERFUL: A very powerful, emotional and amazing morning for 170 women who courageously bared all, in Kerry's first ever, women's-only charity 'Dip in the Nip' in aid of Recovery Haven Kerry - Cancer Support Charity, in Shore Acre, Camp. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan

Women bravely bare all for Kerry's first 'Dip in the Nip'

It really was girl power at its finest - as 170 women of all ages braved the elements on Sunday to bare all for charity at the weekend. | By Michelle Crean Shore Acre in Camp was the location which was only revealed to the participants for Kerry's first ever 'Dip in the Nip'. And amongst the all female grouping were some Killarney ladies who joined in the empowering adventure for what was described as "a special and unforgettable morning" all in aid of Recov-

ery Haven Kerry. According to Marisa Reidy from Recovery Haven, the women were of all ages and all walks of life who came together for so many personal reasons. "Some were still on their own cancer journey, some were celebrating coming out the other side and of course, many were there to honour friends and loved ones who they had lost to cancer, but

FUN: Killarney women Mary O'Leary, Margaret O'Donoghue, Fiona O'Donoghue, Joan O'Reilly, Lil O'Doherty, Tara O'Donoghue, and Eda Moore smiling after taking part in 'Dip in the Nip' in aid of Recovery Haven Kerry - Cancer Support Charity. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan

we were all equal on the day – flaws and all," Marisa, who also took part in the event, told the Killarney Advertiser. "It was a truly uplifting and exhilarating experience and we are so, so grateful to each and every lady who joined us for a morning we will never forget. One woman described it as ‘companionship among strangers’ and that really sums it up perfectly. It was emotional, there were some tears, but lots of laughter and we couldn’t have asked for anything more. When the ladies hit the water,

they all formed a circle and held hands in a gesture that was totally unplanned - it just happened organically and it was quite overwhelming." She added that a very special mention has to be made to Michaela and John Edwards and their team from Wild Water Adventures for their support and expertise in ensuring no stone was left unturned in making it a fabulous, safe event. "It was an all-female team from beginning to end, from our own volunteers, stewards, registration, Gardai, teas and coffees, lifeguards, sea rescue - girl power at its finest! Now all that’s left to do is start planning for 2022!" Donations are still being taken via the link on the Recovery Haven Kerry Facebook page. "So far we are close on €9,000 which is just fabulous."

Culture Night brings people together again The hunger for arts and culture was evident at Culture Night right across Kerry on Friday night as eager culture vultures flocked to live events, theatre, music, exhibitions and tuned in online for a wide variety of events. On a hugely successful night for all involved, artists, arts organisations and arts centres offered up a diverse selection of free events late into the night, with many events sold out in advance. For many, Culture Night marked the return to good cultural times after a devastating 18 months for the live events industry. The evening was funded by The Arts Coun-

cil, Kerry County Council, Department of TCAGMS and supported by Creative Ireland Kerry and the Local Live Performance Scheme. Key events in Tralee, Killarney, Listowel and Dingle saw grateful audiences return to their beloved theatres, museums and arts centres, while the towns and villages of Kenmare, Waterville, Killorglin, Caherdaniel, Castlemaine, Ballybunion, Scartaglin and Tureencahill treated their communities to an eclectic range of events. Siamsa Tire kicked off events in Tralee with ‘Tunes, Taps and Surprises’, while the wonderful people at St John of God Kerry Services opened their Wah-na-Be! exhibition in the County Museum. Catherine Young Dance created a ‘Homecoming’ film that was launched to a national audience online, while Kerry Film FesSinger and songwriter, John Spillane performed at Muckross Traditional Farms as part of the return of Ireland's Culture Night 2021. tival hosted their film event at St John’s Church. People took their pick of events around the town, covering drama, visual art, crafts, literature and film. Meanwhile in Killarney, the Fanzinis, who sold out weeks in advance, treated families to a hilarious circus performance. With Sharon Langston on board, the waterbus at Ross Castle was full to capacity for two sailings, while John Spillane was another sell out at Muckross Traditional Farms. St John’s Theatre, Listowel and Kerry

Writers’ Museum had several events showcasing the best of theatre, storytelling, poetry, music and literature that Kerry has to offer. In Dingle, a full night of culture from book launches to dancing and exhibitions to slam poetry, culminating in a Super Céilí concluded celebrations. “We had over 40 events across Kerry, and we want to thank all the artists, event organisers, and audiences for making Culture Night the very special occasion that is was this year,” Kate Kennelly, Kerry County Arts Officer, said.

BLESSING: Fr Kieran O’Brien blessed the boat as Kathleen, her family, and Chairman of Muckross Rowing Club, Sean Daly, looked on. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

LAUNCH: Muckross Rowing Club celebrated the blessing and launch of a new racing boat - Janousek coxed four which is specially dedicated to Kathleen Murphy of Muckross. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

Kathleen honoured as new boat is launched It was a very special and momentous day for Muckross Rowing Club on Sunday - as not only did they launch a new boat - but did so to honour a life-long supporter. Members and supporters gathered at the club’s boathouse as the club’s newest racing boat, a Janousek coxed four, was officially launched in honour of Kathleen Murphy. The event was made all the more special as it had been so long awaited by the club. While the boat was purchased prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a launch event at the club was not possible until the recent easing of public health restrictions. Among the crowd gathered were members of the extended Murphy and Kenny families as well as many of Kathleen’s neighbours and friends from Mangerton Road and beyond.

Kathleen (nee Kenny) was born and raised in Muckross and has enjoyed close family ties with the rowing club from childhood to the present day. The Kennys of Muckross and their extended family have long played a central role in the club extending to over a century, reflected in the names of boats named and launched before in honour of other family members including Micheal Kenny and Jack O’Shea. Kathleen has long been among the most prominent and recognised club’s supporters at the annual Killarney Regatta, proudly sporting the club’s yellow colours while cheering on crews at all levels from Juvenile to Sen-

ior and Veteran. Together with her late husband Jerry, Kathleen has also played a central role in fundraising for the club with countless tickets sold weekly for the local Muckross Lottery since its launch in early 1990s. Both Kathleen and Jerry were previously recognised for their contribution to the club and both named as Vice Presidents. Kathleen and Jerry’s children and grandchildren continue the family tradition both on the lake and onshore, contributing to the club’s success and development as active rowers, coaches and committee members. Presiding over the launch was Club Chairman Sean Daly and the blessing of the boat was carried out by Fr Kieran O’Brien. The club was also delighted to welcome Emer Corridan, General Manager of the

Cahernane House Hotel – whose sponsorship of the club supported the boat’s purchase. The ceremonial popping of the champagne cork was carried out by Kathleen’s granddaughter Áine, and after a sprinkling of the bow, the boat was formally launched on the water by five of Kathleen’s grandchildren – Áine and Shona O’Sullivan, Daniel, Jack and Katie Murphy. The special launch event was an emotional day for the family and club with many memories of Kathleen’s late husband Jerry, whose anniversary was recently observed, in addition to family members gone before. Speaking on behalf of Kathleen, her son Kieran spoke of the great honour for Kathleen and her family to have one of the club’s racing boats named in her honour. Kieran expressed the family’s gratitude to the club, its committee and Chairman Sean Daly, President Maurice Coffey and Vice Presidents and to all the members, supporters and friends in attendance. The ceremonial proceedings were followed by refreshments outside the club’s new boathouse.

WEDDING

Love is in the air

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

30

The love of music bonded one couple so much so that they happily tied the knot after five years together. Killarney woman Brídann Griffin met Mayo man Alan Walsh from Westport while both were working and living in Dublin. And it was their common interest in music that brought the couple together, and they got engaged in June 2019. On Friday, September 3, they gathered with up to 90 of their closest family and friends where they said their vows at Fossa Church, which was officiated by Fr Niall Geaney. And after a quick stop off at the Golden Nugget for a drink, they, and their bridal party, headed to Muckross Abbey where talented local photographer Dylan Clifford captured some very special moments which they'll forever cherish. Then it was off to the Muckross Park Hotel for the reception where everyone had a ball for the night. Brídann is from Fossa and daughter of Dermot and Breda Griffin. Alan is son of Tom and Anne Walsh. The bridal party was made up of Best Man Paul Walsh, the groom's brother, and groomsmen Daire Kilkelly and Gabrielle Veglianti. Maid of Honour was Jane O'Donoghue, and bridesmaids were

Katie Sheahan and Laura Ryan. Flowergirl, who did an excellent job on the day, was four-year-old Clodagh Deasy who is Alan's niece. The couple were glad to finally tie the knot as it was third time lucky due to the pandemic. "It was brilliant, an amazing day," Alan told the Killarney Advertiser. "We had to postpone twice. August 2020 was our original date and we had also planned May this year. It was a lovely day and we got very lucky with the weather. We got some lovely photos in the Golden Nugget and Muckross Abbey. And it seems like Killarney is now home for the couple who moved to Woodlawn four months ago. Alan secured a job as an automation engineer with BioAtlantis in Tralee while Brídann works remotely for Life Scientific in Dublin. And the Kerry-Mayo connection doesn't stop there for the couple as Brídann's older brother Micheál married Mayo woman Roisín a few years ago - so it could get tricky if Kerry are up against Mayo in the All-Ireland Championship in the future!

Author: Laura Hannon Daisy’s 1st Race Car’ by Laura Hannon is a great story that little girls and boys will all equally enjoy – however there is an important underlying message for girls. The book really highlights that sports (in particular motorsport) and STEM are available options to little girls too. As a Mechanical Engineer Laura was the only female on her Engineering Course in university and after working in a male dominated field for 10 years, she realised that empowerment needs to begin at a young age. Daisy is Laura’s way of sharing this message. The book’s aim is to smash the stereotype that girls don’t belong in STEM and motorsport. Proceeds from the book will support Children’s Services in CUH through CUH Charity. The book has also received significant support from Formula Female and its founder, Nicci Daly - a mechanical engineer, an international hockey player and a mo-

torsport engineer having worked in US race teams. Books are €8. To buy go to www. laura-hannon-books.myshopify.com, Instagram: @laurahannonbooks, and @cuh.charity.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Angela Kerrisk Angela is available for advice and fitness consultations, at info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Don't be tempted by quick fad diets If you scroll through social media, you are bound to see hundreds or even thousands of posts about Fad diets, juice cleanses, detox teas, and tons of other products marketed to promote rapid weight loss. Dieting is a 72 billion dollar a year industry, so it is no wonder why diet culture marketing is so prevalent. But what is a fad diet and how do you tell if you are following one? Weight-loss advice comes in literally hundreds of disguises, so how do you spot the red flags of a fad diet? Most often these new and revolutionary diets are really old fad diets making a comeback! These usually promise quick weight loss, sound too good to be true, and do not follow eating guidelines that support good health. Many of us would like to lose a few pounds, however, you shouldn’t be tempted by the increasing range of quick fix options making unrealistic weight loss promises for minimum effort. There is no fad diet you can follow without some associated nutritional or health risk and most offer a short-term fix to a long-term problem. Stay away from diets that: • Ban a specific food or food group. Fad diets are typically very restrictive • Promises weight loss of over two pounds (1kg) per week • Claims that sound too good to be true • Lists of "good" and "bad" foods • Recommendations made to help sell a product • Promises a cure-all, ingredient or product to solve your weight problem without having to change your lifestyle • Does not encourage physical activity • Does not provide support for long-term weight loss success Sadly, there is no magic solution to losing weight and keeping it off long-term. People will often try anything that promises to help them lose weight. They may want to look or feel better and companies that promote fad diets take advantage of this. Fad diets work for a short amount of time. In most cases, this is because you eat fewer calories than normal and you also pay more attention to what you eat. By cutting out major groups of foods, you won’t get the nutrients your body needs to be

healthy. If you lose weight too quickly and there is no support to help you keep the weight off, you could get stuck in a cycle of weight loss and weight gain. This yo-yo dieting is stressful for your body. However, it’s likely that most of the weight you lose is from water and lean muscle, not body fat. Most people then get fed-up with the restrictions, start eating more, choose less healthy foods and pile the pounds back on and that yo-yo cycle continues to the next magic fad! They define successful weight loss as losing weight and keeping it off for at least five years. So what’s the best advice for getting rid of the extra pounds and keeping them off. It may be obvious, but to lose weight you need to make healthier choices, eat a nutritionally balanced and varied diet with appropriately sized portions and be physically active. If you need help to figure out what weight loss plan will work best for you think about seeing a nutrition coach where you will learn healthy and sustainable diet and lifestyle habits. This is the role of a nutrition coach, and they can set individualised action steps like working on incorporating more veggies in your diet, incorporating more activity when you aren’t at the gym, getting better sleep, and holding you accountable to engaging in these habits long term, with a goal to help you become the healthiest version of yourself. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Fuel Allowance Question: Who qualifies for Fuel Allowance

and how is it paid? ANSWER: Fuel Allowance is paid under the National Fuel Scheme, operated by the Department of Social Protection. It is intended to help people who are dependent on long-term social welfare payments and who are unable to meet their heating needs. The fuel season usually starts at the end of September and runs for 28 weeks until April of the following year. Under the scheme, a Fuel Allowance of €28 per week is generally paid with your social welfare payment. In certain circumstances you can also opt to have the total allowance of €784 paid in two equal lump sums. The first lump sum is normally paid in early October and the second payment is in January. Fuel Allowance is a means-tested payment. If you are getting a non-contributory social welfare payment, you are accepted as satisfying the means test. You must live alone or with someone who also qualifies for the allowance – you cannot get the allowance if you live with someone who does not qualify. Where two or more people living in the same household qualify for the allowance, only one allowance is paid. If your heating needs are met in other ways for example, if you live in Local Authority housing where heating is provided, you do not qualify for Fuel Allowance. If you think you are eligible, you should apply immediately because the allowance will not be backdated after the start of the fuel season in October. The application form for Fuel Allowance (NFS1) is available from your local Citizens Information Centre, post office or by texting FORM FUEL followed by your name and address to 51909. To get your

Fuel Allowance paid in two lump sums, fill in the Change the Payment Frequency form at least one month before the first lump sum is due. If you apply for the Fuel Allowance after the start of the Fuel Allowance season, it will not be backdated. If you are getting a payment from the Department of Social Protection or a social security payment from a country covered by EU Regulations or a country with which Ireland has a bilateral social security agreement, the Fuel Allowance will be included in your weekly payment. You do not need to reapply for the Fuel Allowance each year as long as your circumstances remain the same and you continue to get the same social welfare payment. Knit your community back together for Age Action Ireland Age Action and Innocent drinks have launched their Big Knit challenge and are calling on knitters and crocheters to knit their communities back together. Innocent drinks Ireland is asking knitters and crocheters across Ireland to knit 100,000 little woolly hats to raise funds for Age Action by Summer 2022. For every hat received by Innocent, 30c is donated to Age Action, Ireland’s leading advocacy organisation for older people, advocating for equality and human rights for all of us as we age. “Age Action is delighted to be a part of the Big Knit again this year and grateful

to Innocent and all our knitters for their support," Caroline O'Connell, Head of Fundraising at Age Action, said. "Following 18-months of COVID-19 restrictions, the Big Knit is a great opportunity to reconnect with family and friends of all ages in your community. We want to challenge the negative stereotypes about ageing and older people which became more prevalent during the pandemic. Intergenerational connection is key to reframing how we act, feel, and think about older people and ageing, which is why we are encouraging people of all ages to make an effort to get together for the Big Knit. Put simply, as well as raising funds for Age Action, you can also help knit

your community back together by getting together to knit little hats with older or younger family members or friends.” Over the past 10 years the Irish public knitted more than half a million hats and helped raise over €200,000 for Age Action’s advocacy and programme work. From November 2022, the nation’s little hats will appear on Innocent smoothie bottles (250ml) across the country. For each bottle sold wearing a little hat, innocent drinks will donate 30 cents to Age Action. Hats can be sent to The Big Knit 2021, Innocent drinks, Fruit Towers, 2 Ballsbridge Park, Dublin 4.

London-based South Kerry man, Dan Tim O’Sullivan, will exercise his rights as a Freeman of the city by herding sheep over a London bridge on Sunday. Mr O’Sullivan from Kells, was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 2019, in recognition for his work in the construction industry. He employs over one thousand people through his labour hire firm 'Danny Sullivan and Sons', and has employed countless Kerry people, many of them from his native South Kerry, since its foundation in the mid-1980s. The Freedom of the City of London allows the bearer to herd one hundred sheep over the landmark Tower Bridge. However, logistical issues and traffic management plans mean the number of sheep has been reduced to less than 10 and the event will now take place over nearby Southwark Bridge. London-based news channels, including the BBC, are expected to cover the event while hundreds of his family and friends from South Kerry will be in London to witness the unique event.

Daredevil wows as he walks tightrope in Paris It was a stunt that many thought wouldn't go well - but one brave man proved them all wrong - after walking across a 600-metre-long tightrope! Onlookers warily looked on as 27-yearold Nathan Paulin - who had been practicing for four years - walked the slim line 200ft above the ground. Beginning at the Eiffel Tower, the daredevil crossed the Seine River and was greeted with cheers from onlookers in Paris. At one point he even sat and laid down on the tightrope before arriving at the

Chaillot Theatre following the 30 minute show. "It’s really beautiful starting from the Eiffel Tower," Nathan said. "During the performance, I really didn’t feel it, I really didn’t have a fear of heights." He stopped for a few breaks while walking barefoot across the line in what is thought to be the longest highline crossing in an urban environment ever. "It wasn’t easy walking 600 metres, concentrating with everything around, the pressure… but it was still beautiful," he explained.

Nathan struggled to secure authorisation for the stunt and expressed fear about completing it due to "the stress associated with the crowd", and "the fact that there are a lot of people". He did the feat to commemorate France's annual Heritage Day when people are invited to explore historic buildings and monuments that are normally closed to the public. He holds multiple world records. He explained that his objective was to "do something beautiful and share it, as well as to put a new viewpoint on legacy, to bring heritage to life".

Thousands flee as volcano erupts Over 5,000 people have had to flee their homes after a volcano erupted on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma this week.

First all-citizen crew to orbit the Earth has launched Four citizen astronauts were launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch represents the latest major step forward in a new era of commercial space travel in the first-ever crewed orbital mission that didn't include any professional astronauts. The Inspiration4 flight was led by a billionaire businessman, similar to prior trips to the edge of space by Bezos and Virgin Galactic's Richard Branson. However, it sparked popular interest since it included three passengers who were not charged for their seats, making the crew more representative of the general public than any prior space voyage.

During its three-day mission, the capsule orbited the planet once every 90 minutes at a speed of more than 17,000mph and at an altitude of 360 miles, which is higher than the International Space Station and Hubble Space Telescope. The sight of ordinary citizens experiencing space travel reawakened one of the dreams of Nasa’s Space Shuttle programme, when the agency hoped to use non-astronauts to raise wider interest in and help communicate the experience of space. "Your mission has shown the world that space is for all of us, and that everyday people can make extraordinary impacts in the world around them," said Kris Young, Space Operations Director at SpaceX mission control.

Llama antibody has ‘significant potential’ as COVID-19 treatment A unique antibody produced by llamas could be developed as a new frontline treatment against COVID-19 - taken by patients as a simple nasal spray. Scientists at the Rosalind Franklin Institute have found that the nanobodies – a smaller, simple form of antibody generated by llamas and camels – can effectively target the Sars-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

Huge lava plumes were seen shooting from the Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge, which scientists have been actively monitoring due to seismic activity for the past week. Authorities ordered the evacuation of four settlements, including El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane two hours later, with lava edging down the hillside from five cracks carved into the hillside. The lava flow continued throughout the day, with video footage showing rivers of magma flowing onto woods, fields and even swimming pools. The president of the Canary Islands,

The research was funded by UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) Medical Research Council (MRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the EPA Cephalosporin Fund and Wellcome. The nanobodies bind tightly to the virus, neutralising it in the laboratory, and could provide a cheaper and easier alternative to human antibodies taken from recovered COVID-19 patients. "Although this research is still at an early

stage, it opens up significant possibilities for the use of effective nanobody treatments for COVID-19," Professor Miles Carroll, deputy director of the National Infection Service, Public Health England (PHE), said. "These are among the most effective Sars-CoV-2 neutralising agents we have ever tested at PHE. "We believe the unique structure and strength of the nanobodies contribute to their significant potential for both the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 and look forward to working collaboratively to progress this work into clinical studies."

Victor Torres, estimated that 5,000 people had been forced to flee their homes and that most had found family or friends to take them in, while the rest had taken refuge in shelters. Mariano Hernández, the president of La Palma’s Council, asked people to keep away from the affected areas because spectators were hampering the evacuation effort. “People shouldn’t come near the eruption site where the lava is flowing,” he said. “We’re having serious problems with the evacuation because the roads are jammed with people who are trying to get close enough to see it.” The earliest recorded eruption in La Palma was in 1430, according to the Spanish National Geographical Institute.

Forcing bulbs to flower ahead of time It is apparently only a matter of 13 weeks until Christmas is upon us and forcing indoor bulbs requires precision timing! One of my favourites are Amaryllis, properly known as Hippeastrum which are tall, striking, red or white Lily type flowers we all associate with Christmas. For many years I bought them as cut flowers but now prefer to grow the bulbs. They will be available from the end of October onwards as they must be planted between five and eight weeks before they are needed which is usually, but not necessarily, Christmas. When you go to buy the bulbs, size is everything. Unfortunately the larger the bulb the higher the cost, but if you buy cheaper smaller bulbs the flowers will also be smaller and weaker. A decent sized bulb for an Amaryllis should be about 15cm in diameter. Place it in an adequately sized container – there should be about 5cm between the edge of the pot and the bulb. Fill the pot with multipurpose compost leaving the neck and shoulders of the bulb above the soil. Place in a bright spot, but away from heat and direct sunlight. Water moderately until growth starts and then start feeding with a liquid feed such as Baby Bio every second week. By Christmas it should be in full bloom. When the flower fades, stop feeding and give it less water until the foliage has turned yellow. Then stop watering altogether as it goes dormant. The bulb can remain in the same pot for about three years, at which point it should need a larger pot.

KICKSTART

Most bulbs need a period of cold weather, ie. winter, to kickstart them into growing. When forcing bulbs to flower ahead of time they need a period of artificial cold, such as a fridge, for a certain length of time which can vary from type to type.

Therefore, always buy ‘prepared' bulbs as only these are suitable for growing indoors and have been treated to a cold spell. Hyacinths would be the most popular. I absolutely love the scent. I start planting them now, in two week intervals so that I have a continuous display for about six weeks. Gloves are recommended as hyacinth bulbs can cause skin irritation. Plant in free draining compost or preferably bulb fibre if you can get it. As with all bulbs used for indoor display, they can be planted close together but not touching each other or the sides of the pot. Ensure the top of the bulb is just visible. Keep hyacinth in a cool dark place such as a garage for about 10 weeks to allow root formation. At this point a shoot should also have grown. Place the pot in a bright spot indoors and about four weeks on they should be flowering. There are also special cases and pots available for hyacinths - I really advise having a look on the Internet and getting creative! Other bulbs, such as grape hyacinths (muscari), dwarf daffodils, paperwhites, crocus and snowdrops can also be used for an indoor display. As with the hyacinths, these bulbs need 10 weeks of cold, dark conditions which mimics nature to trigger root growth and subsequent flowers. Using old teacups, teapots, soup bowls and even gravy boats can be an attractive way of displaying indoor or outdoor arrangements. Lining glass jars or vases with moss – the nice side facing out - before filling with compost is another way to create a cost effective yet pretty pot. Tie a festive ribbon around it and you have a lovely gift. Remember that press full of old mismatched and unwanted Christmas crockery? Well, plant them up – they will make great gifts too!

CHEQUE: Mairead Dunphy and TJ O'Connor hand over the cheque to Mary Fitzgerald from Comfort for Chemo. The funds were raised from this year's 54321 Challenge.

€60k will be a comfort to Kerry cancer patients

| By Michelle Crean Seven brave women have raised an astonishing amount for charity - clocking up almost €60k to bring comfort to Kerry cancer patients. Angela O'Connor, Marian Kelly, Helena Hanafin, Mairead Dunphy, Siobhan O'Sullivan, Maryanne Leane and Celine Roche took on the ninth annual 54321 Challenge and raised a total of €58,325 for this year’s selected charity Comfort for Chemo Kerry, which they handed over to the charity this week. The seven participants undertook the four-day challenge, which took place from Thursday August 19 to Sunday 22 inclusive. They endured all sorts of weather during the epic challenge. "Day one saw the team taking on the Ring of Kerry leaving Killarney in the early hours of the morning," TJ O'Connor, who is one of the organisers, said. "The weather conditions were mixed but this did not dampen the spirits of these amazing ladies. They were met with great support along the route and even danced a polka set in Waterville along the way. Day two saw the team climbing Carrantuohill, despite heavy rainfall over night, the heads were up, and the singing voices were on and a massive thanks to our guide Patricia O'Sullivan on the day who knows the mountain like the back of her hand. The clouds lifted for a while on top of the mountain and they had some of the clearest views to be seen on the Reeks.

Day three saw them cycling to Cahersiveen and then climbing Cnoc Na Tobair, where the ladies took to literally rolling down the mountain in an effort to send the message out to keep the donations rolling in. The final day, day four, they took to the Skellig Ring and took in Valentia, Portmagee, St Finians Bay and Ballinaskelligs. Unfortunately again the sun was scare, but the heads were up and the eye was on the finish line."

SPINATHONS A major contributor to this year’s fundraising efforts were a number of Spinathon days where this year's participants, volunteers from Comfort for Chemo, family and friends took to the streets in different locations around the county on spinning bikes, including Killarney town which brought in over €6,000 at one location, he added. "This brings the total raised to date €300,000 supporting a number of very deserving Kerry charities over the years. On behalf of Comfort for Chemo and the 54321 Challenge team we would like to say thank you to all those who have sponsored and supported us along the way. “If the last 18 months has thought us anything, it is to be thankful for what we have, our health is our wealth, and the power of people working together can get us through some of the most difficult situations." Follow them on Facebook: 54321Challenge or visit www.54321challenge.org.

Double the car fun at Killarney Racecourse A new collaboration between Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club and Cars n’Coffee Killarney was hailed a success by event organisers. On Sunday last, between 250 and 300 cars went on display at Killarney Racecourse. The range of cars covered everything from vintage, classic, retro and modern from a 1936 Rolls Royce to a 2017 Mercedes Benz AMG. It was the first time that the local vintage club and the Cars n’Coffee team came together to run an event and it could pave the way for similar such occasions in the future.

“The event attracted a huge cross section of car enthusiasts from all different age brackets which was very important,” Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club’s Tom Leslie, who was one of the main organisers, said. “The owners were there with the bonnets of the cars open and proud as punch of what they were showing. There was a huge amount of public there and loads of new members signed up to our club.”

Killarney co-drivers head to Rally Yorkshire Two Killarney-based co-drivers will contest this weekend’s Trackrod Rally Yorkshire, the fourth rounds of the British Rally Championship. The two-day event gets underway tonight (Friday) with one stage set to be run under the cover of darkness. On the startline will be Muckross man Noel O’Sullivan and Aghadoe’s Mikie Galvin. O’Sullivan, co-driver to Welshman Osian Pryce, is the current leader of the series while Galvin, who reads pacenotes for fellow Killarney and District Motor Club member, West Cork’s Keith Cronin, is eighth after missing the opening round. "The element of darkness certainly brings an additional challenge to all the crews, especially since most of us will not have done any night stages for some time, the most recent I did was in 2017 on the Ulster Rally," Cronin noted. The route layout reads like an extract from the itinerary of the World Championship counting RAC Rally of the 1980s, featuring familiar locations such as Dalby, Gale Rigg and Langdale, and it will be the Dalby Forest test that opens the competition shortly after 8pm tonight. Meanwhile, Irish rallying returned last Sunday after the pandemic-enforced layoff with the 'Munster Car Club’s Cork 20’. London-based Listry co-driver Shane Buckley was the best of the local entrants, guiding Daniel Cronin, Keith’s brother, to fifth overall.

Ger Conway and his driver Stephen Wright were just two places and 8.9 seconds behind in another Ford Fiesta RC2. It was Conway’s first taste of a RC2 car since he and Rob Duggan finished second overall on the 2018 Donegal International Rally. “There is a taste of more after this,” said Ger after a trouble-free day. Damien Fleming came close to making it four local co-drivers in the top 10. He and his driver Stephen McCann were 11th, just 16.6 off the leader board. They said it took a while to get used to the bumpy Irish tar after a recent trip to the Tour of Flanders in Belgium.

CANNONBALL: Ken O’Neill and Tony Murphy took part in the Cannonball Run last weekend

PORSCHE: Colin O’Donoghue drove Tadgh O’Sullivan’s Porsche on the charity run.

“What am I going to do next weekend?” joked Colin O’Donoghue as he steered a Porsche Panamera Sport away from the Ballygarry House Hotel on Saturday evening.

was just one of several local cars entered in the event that raises funds for the HOPE Foundation. Killarney garage owner Brian Glover of BG Motors on the Tralee Road, and his brother Kieran were another local team in the road-run. They drove a Nissan Skyline R-35 on the three-day event that eventually finished in Belfast on Sunday night. “It is an unreal buzz,” said Brian. “Young and old love it and we got an unreal welcome in every town we pass through.” A similar car was driven by Ken O’Neill of O’Neill’s Power Tools in Milltown and

Local drivers join supercar Cannonball run Fresh from his previous weekend’s rally success in Belgium, O’Donoghue and his future father-in-law, Killarney garage owner Tadgh O’Sullivan, were taking part in their first Cannonball Run in Tadgh’s Porsche. “Where else would see such a collection of these cars in the one place?” said Tadgh.

Cannonball, the action-packed supercar spectacle, arrived in Kerry on Saturday morning. After an overnight halt in Cork, the one hundred or so supercars made their way to a lunch stop at the Tralee hotel before completing leg-two in Galway later that day. The cars and their drivers, many of them in fancy dress, took in Kenmare, Moll’s Gap and Killarney before the lunch-stop. They departed Tralee and headed for the Shannon Ferry at Tarbert, under a Garda escort, via Listowel. The O’Sullivan/O’Donoghue Porsche

The cancellation of the exhibition element of the National Ploughing Championships, due to Coronavirus restrictions, allowed the long-time car enthusiast to participate in the event for the first time. “The two events always clash and we would be too busy at the ploughing,” he said. Tralee garage man Gio Gaudino drove a Mercedes C-Class V8 Bi-Turbo in the event. “It is great to do something for charity, the target is €120,000 and they will do it,” he said.

Recharge and boost your skin's metabolism Sothys Detox Energy Intensive Facial is possibly one of the best facials I have ever had, or had the pleasure of doing for clients. I love the real instant results and the long-lasting effects including the glow, the tightness and the luminosity. If you're looking to breathe new life into your skin, this is the facial for you. A trio of highly active ingredients, organic elderberry, Siberian ginseng and detoxifying peptides, work in synergy to recharge and boost the skin's metabolism. It gives the vital energy needed for the skin to defend itself against environmental stress, which can speed up ageing. At the heart of Sothys skin care programme is a cutting-edge Digi-Esthetique lymphatic massage technique, which contains acupressure points. This massage helps reduce puffiness and en-

hances the delivery of the product to the skin. Sothys facials are transforming; not only delivering an unforgettable feeling of well-being but your skin will feel resplendently refreshed. It's a professional grade treatment, with each phase individually packeted for added freshness and keeps the active ingredients super charged. It's a sixphase treatment utilising a detoxifying massage, a depolluting triple action scrub combined with an oxygenating serum, and an energising mask which helps to rebalance the skin and achieve a luminous glowing complexion. The mask consists of three different layers of a massage for real hydration, skin's defence and tightening. It's the perfect solution for dull, tired skin. Start your career research early in Sixth Year The first couple of weeks in Leaving Cert are all about settling back into a routine. It’s a bit of a shock to the system for everyone, but it is very important to hit the ground running in terms of your work rate and approach to study and revision from early on. The same applies to your career research. Many of you will have done some career exploration in Transition Year and Fifth Year which is really valuable. If you haven’t, don’t worry there is still plenty of time. Students who have done the Leaving Cert previously will tell you just how quickly the year seems to go. Before you know it the time will come to make decisions about what direction you want to take next. You don’t need to be told that this is a really important decision, which means you don’t want it to be a rushed one. Starting your research early in Sixth Year will allow you to take time to look at all the options available to you which will then enable you to make an informed decision when you need to. I’ve no doubt that many of you are already feeling stressed and overwhelmed at the thought of having to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life. You don’t need to make that decision now, but you will want to decide what form of education or training you would like to pursue for the next couple of years and what career areas/sectors interest you in the foreseeable future. Seek out supports and valuable resources My advice is to start by making an appointment with your guidance counsellor in school who will give you some great suggestions of pathways and courses that might suit you, answer any questions you have and support you through the decision-making process. Ultimately you will have to decide what direction you want to take after school, but using all the really good supports and resources available to you will help hugely, that and taking the time to do proper research!

STEPS FOR SUCCESSFUL CAREER RESEARCH STEP 1: The research starts with yourself; consider your likes, dislikes, interests, skills, strengths, personality traits, values, aptitudes, competencies and subjects you are good at. Think about what motivates you. If you are finding this process difficult, look at some of the free self-assessment tools available online on websites such as www.careersportal.ie, www.qualifax.ie, www.yooni.ie and on the Exit Entry App. They will help to get you started and will give suggestions on

broad career sectors as well as specific careers and courses that are worth looking in to. However, you will need to do further research! STEP 2: Explore the world of work, the career sectors and actual job titles. Think about the work settings that appeal to you and those that don’t! The sites mentioned above have extensive information on lots of career areas. Take a look also at the weekly webinars on various career areas from @synergycareers. STEP 3: Look at the education and training options that will help you to develop your skills, knowledge, expertise and experience in a particular area to start you off in your career. You will be continuously building on these over the years. Think about the many options – apprenticeships, traineeships, post-leaving cert courses, CAO courses, study abroad options and more. Then look at the detail of what you will be studying by looking carefully at modules, how they are assessed and the breakdown of practical and theoretical learning. Make sure all of this suits the type of learner you are. Register for the open days, many of which will be virtual again this year, starting from the beginning of October. Put any questions you have to college staff who are only too willing to answer them. You will find details of all career events on a weekly short video by @classroomguidance and lots of really informative Podcasts on courses and colleges on @leavingcertguidance. Remember there is not just one pathway for everyone, there are many – make sure to explore them all early in Sixth Year and then make an informed decision that you will be happy with.

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

Loved and Missed by many.

Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

WE WANT SÉAMO | By Adam Moynihan

- Fans tip Moynihan for Kerry job in latest Killarney Advertiser survey - Former captain tops poll on 37% with ex-boss Jack O’Connor trailing on 23% - 18% in favour of Peter Keane extension Four-time All-Ireland winner Séamus Moynihan has emerged as the supporters’ favourite for the vacant Kerry manager’s job, a survey carried out by the Killarney Advertiser can reveal. Over one-third of respondents said that Moynihan should be the next Kerry manager with 23% of fans backing former boss Jack O’Connor. The team’s most recent bainisteoir, Peter Keane, received 18% of the votes. Another former manager, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, is next in line on 10%, although it is believed that he is not willing to return to the fold due to work commitments. In addition to the four main candidates mentioned above, readers were also invited to nominate their own preferred candidate. This open field threw up 16 more names with former Kerry and Dr Crokes manager Pat O’Shea the most popular entry. The Killarney man re-

ceived around 3.5% of the vote. Donie Buckley got roughly half as many votes as O’Shea, and the other prospective managers ended up with less than 1% each. The Kerry GAA sub-committee tasked with finding the next manager are expected to make their decision in the coming weeks.

PLAYING CAREER

Glenflesk native Moynihan enjoyed a glittering playing career for The Kingdom between 1992 and 2006, the highlight perhaps coming in the year 2000 when he captained his county to All-Ireland glory. He has since taken on coaching roles with his own club and with Fossa and was part of Darragh Ó Sé’s Kerry U21 management team in 2015. It has been suggested that Monaghan’s defensive coach Donie Buckley will be part of the Moynihan ticket. Buckley

was also a member of Peter Keane’s backroom team, but Keane relieved him of his duties in the early stages of the 2020 season. Could there be a twist in the tale, however? After this survey was completed, Tony Leen of the Irish Examiner tweeted that Moynihan and Buckley are, indeed, part of the same ticket, but the manager’s name attached is that of current Killarney Legion boss Stephen Stack. Stack himself had a long and distinguished playing career with The Kingdom and as a manager led Austin Stacks to the County Championship in 2014 and Legion to an East Kerry Championship in 2020. The Listowel native is also rumoured to be calling on Dara Ó Cinnéide and Mickey Ned O’Sullivan as selectors, with Joe O’Connor filling the role of strength and conditioning coach.

Crokes welcome Spa to senior with emphatic win It was a big ask for Spa to recover from the high (and the celebrations) of the previous weekend to take on Dr Crokes in Round 1 of the Senior Club Championship. Facing the club kingpins is a daunting task at the best of times, let alone just seven days after you’ve won an intermediate final after 11 years of trying. To their credit, the Tullig club gave as good as they got for over half of Sunday’s encounter at the Fitzgerald Stadium. After an early goal by Micheál Burns, points by Evan Cronin and Mike Foley kept them within striking distance in the first period, and when Cronin goaled in the 27th minute, Spa trailed by just a goal. A fisted effort by Tony Brosnan gave Crokes a four-point advantage at the big break (1-9 to 1-5). Burns (two), Brosnan and Kieran O’Leary all pointed for Crokes early in the second but a point from Mike McCarthy and a well-taken goal by Foley reduced the deficit to four once again. By the time the second water break rolled around, Edmund O’Sullivan’s side had pushed their lead back out to six thanks to further points by Brosnan and Leary. When a fortuitous goal by Mark O’Shea widened the margin, the writing was on the wall. A missed penalty by Evan Cronin was unfortunate for Spa but Crokes were exerting their dominance by this stage and late scores by

David Shaw, Tom Doyle and Jordan Kiely left the full-time score at Dr Crokes 2-22 Spa 2-10. Next up for Crokes in Group 2 is an away fixture against Templenoe on Saturday at 5pm, while Spa will be looking to pick up their first points of the competition when they play Kenmare Shamrocks on the road on Sunday. In Group 1, the pressure is on the Legion to beat Kerin’s O’Rahilly’s in their final group phase fixture; if they don’t, they will be participating in the relegation playoff against the bottom placed team in Group 2. Legion, who have been without the services of a number of key players including James O’Donoghue and Jonathan Lyne, find themselves level with Rahilly’s on zero points from two games. They will be desperate to pick up a win in Strand Road on Sunday and avoid the playoff. At the top of Group 1, Dingle and Austin Stacks will fight it out for a place in the final when they meet in Páirc an Ághasaigh on Sunday at 2.30pm.

Kerry’s ‘Big 5’ have a tough decision to make The sub-committee charged with selecting the next Kerry manager have plenty to mull over, writes Eamonn Fitzgerald In the GAA, scene managers stand or fall on results and in Kerry the football manager is expected to win the Sam Maguire within three years. Whatever it takes, just do it and the result will speak for itself. Kerry lead the roll of honour, winning 37 All-Irelands since that first one in 1903 (the final was not played until 1905). 37 is a great haul, but there is a sting in it: we had 37 in 2014 and, so far, 38 has been elusive. At the time of writing, there has been no white smoke on the announcement of the Kerry football manager, who will be expected to deliver that 38th title. Plenty black smoke emanating from the general public and the media, social and otherwise. The Kerry County Board has the responsibility to appoint the manager and that is what is consuming the minds of the loyal Kingdom supporters.

FLAWED

County Chairperson Tim Murphy will be joined by Vice-Chairperson Eamon Whelan, Secretary Peter Twiss, Munster Council Delegate John O’Leary, and Games Manager Donal Daly, the appointed ‘Big 5’ to come up with ‘the preferred candidate’. They are all good honest officials, but the composition of Big 5 is fatally flawed, in my view. I was astounded when the names were released. Five men and no woman. Particularly in this day and age has the Kerry County Board heard of gender balance/ equity? Not a woman in sight and three great women on the board: Bernie Reen, Leona Twiss and Emma Sweeney. This trio are excellent officers and one or more should have been on this sub-committee. Good luck to the five honest men, but a big boo boo, a botún mór, has been made. The board should have known better. I hope the ‘preferred choice ‘of the Big 5 is not also flawed. The board must be satisfied that the best manager and management team is in place. Running the Kerry football team (and for the purposes of this article we confine it to the

TEAM: The outgoing Kerry management team of Tommy Griffin, Peter Keane, Maurice Fitzgerald and James Foley. Is Fitzgerald a possible candidate for the hot seat? Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile

senior football team) is a costly business. There is a very significant cost with travel expenses/meals/accommodation for the amateur players, but also those involved as physios, nutritionists/S&C and many more are paid for their expertise and services, just like any business. Is the Kerry manager paid for the enormous commitment of time etc? Not in Kerry, and no such payment has ever appeared in the treasurer’s annual reports. Nevertheless, the manager is well looked after, as s/he deserves. For so many other counties (but not all) who import managers there is payment. Fundraising or wealthy supporters usually bank-roll this expense. Ironically, it does happen in some clubs in Kerry, and imports don’t come cheaply. The GAA in Croke Park and elsewhere turn a blind eye to it all. Saw nothing, heard nothing. More of the wink and elbow language, so graphically captured by poet Patrick Kavanagh, who once played in goal for his native Inniskeen when they were badly stuck. The Kerry manager’s travel and other necessary expenses are covered as they should be. After all, who would want it? It presents the demands of a full-time job, with a very hard-pressing clientele of animalistic supporters. Deliver Sam and we all will give you plenty advice along the way. Everyone has an opinion in Kerry on how to win.

DECLARED RUNNERS

I know at least one man who wants the

Kerry job. Jack O’Connor signalled his wishes and his intention is to make a third stab at reaching that elusive 38. Going public on the Paul Rouse podcast with his Man Utd comparison and the allure of it all surprised everyone, especially the Kildare County Board. He opted out of that commitment after two years with one year still to go. Meanwhile, Peter Keane’s term of three years was up when they lost to Tyrone, but there are precedents in Kerry for an extension. Eamonn Fitzmaurice was given a fourth year. Apart from a few brief press releases, the Big 5 have gone to ground until they have discussed the position with the interested parties. Not a word from Peter Keane and that is the correct tactic. If he uttered anything in public, some outraged supporters blaming him for the team’s failings would certainly misrepresent his thoughts. Let’s go back to the early notices from the Kerry County Board. In essence anyone interested in the position would be interviewed by the Big 5. Would Peter Keane be the one to lead on for one more year, just as happened in the case of Eamonn Fitzmaurice? No, not yet at least, he would also have to apply like the rest. The silence was deafening; omission informs us. The normal procedure is for a board to thank sincerely the outgoing manager for his total commitment for the past few years and wish him well in the future. That did not happen, not yet

anyway. Is this committee reluctant to follow the Fitzmaurice precedent? Is it afraid of a backlash from a significant number of disillusioned Kerry supporters? The committee has let the general GAA public in Kerry do the public running. They are testing the waters. It’s the old ploy by Government parties and officials. Let the debate go on, Twitter polls and all. Polls don’t matter; votes do - but that is not the full truth. Polls or shrewd GAA tally folk have their hands on the pulse of the people. Neither can the board forget the Kerry diaspora, great financial supporters and big subscribers in building the Currans project.

CHOICES

So, take your pick. Peter Keane, Jack O’Connor, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Séamus Moynihan, John Sugrue, Michéal Quirke, Mickey Ned O’Sullivan, Donie Buckley, Maurice Fitzgerald, Jerry O’Sullivan, John Evans, Mike Hasset, Pat O’Shea, and, of course, ‘N’fheadair’. Jack O’Connor Jack O’Connor has been a very successful manager in the two periods in charge of the Kerry seniors and delivered Sam in each stint. He has done very well with Kildare, bringing them to a Leinster final and winning promotion to Division 1. He wants the job.

Interestingly, towards the end of his reign he got plenty of negative stick from the Kerry supporters and the same happened to Jack O’Connor. Both were winners but it wasn’t all plain sailing. Séamus Moynihan Seamus Moynihan would be the popular choice, admired as a player by Kerry supporters for his class and steely determination, a man could and did play anywhere he was needed. He was a team man out and out. He would bring in Donie Buckley and there’s the basis of a good management team. However, he has little experience as manager. The county want the Glenflesk man, but does he want it? I don’t think so.

|

John Sugrue Sugrue would be a very good choice. I saw him at first hand as manager of the very successful Kerry VEC (ETB) teams and he did great work with the Kerry U20s. He was a very popular manager of the Laois team. He has a practice as a physio in Laois, so the feasibility of committing to those long trips to Kerry will not have him high up on the Paddy Power betting.

|

| Micheál Quirke The Kerin’s O’Rahilly’s and former Kerry player has had a stint managing Laois, but little success accrued. He does have a good basketball background, but is a long shot. | Mickey Ned O’Sullivan He had to take the poisoned chalice after Mick O’Dwyer’s golden era. Well-qualified, he ticks many boxes. Does he want it? Does he need it? Double negative. No.

Jerry O’Sullivan O’Sullivan has managed East Kerry to win the last two Kerry SFC titles in a row. Of course, he had a powerful advantage with so many great players from so many clubs, but he still had to focus on winning. He goes about his job quietly and his record is very good. Well worth keeping in the mix.

|

John Evans He has been around the block with several clubs and a few counties. I don’t expect the bookmakers to give short odds.

|

Maurice Fitzgerald Would be a popular choice, but his busy job as principal of Coláiste na Sceilge would prove too much. Being a selector with losing managements is also against him. No.

|

Mike Hassett Hassett was a splendid corner back for Kerry and is a current selector with Wicklow, who are doing quite well. He teaches in Greystones and

|

lives there with his wife and young family. The long commute would be too much. Also, himself and his brother Liam had a set to with the County Board during their playing days and actually went on strike. Pat O’Shea The vastly experienced O’Shea has done it all at club level and at county level. This brilliant coach and tactician is enjoying coaching his club’s U6s. Won’t be coaxed away from that commitment.

|

Donie Buckley Buckley has proved his expertise in Kerry, Mayo and Monaghan, but he is not favoured by Peter Keane or Jack O’Connor. I have seen the Castleisland man taking sessions and showing backs, in particular, how to defend without fouling. After all, there is no defined tackle in Gaelic Football, so defenders must learn new ways to defend. Buckley has incorporated the best practices from American football, basketball and other relevant sports. These have been adapted very successfully by him with intercountry teams in Kerry, Mayo and Monaghan. His enthusiasm is infectious and it is no wonder he is so popular with players. A retired engineer, the commute from his home in Clare would not faze him. He is a brilliant defensive coach; how about him for manager, complemented by a well selected backroom team? The five men know that he would be a popular choice, but there are obstacles. His services were dispensed with by the board not just once, but twice. He wouldn’t be on the Keane or O’Connor ticket. I suspect that the Buckley factor will entrammel the Big 5 and it is not easy to cope with the fly in the ointment. And then there is ‘N’fheadair’. Sometimes the dark horse gets over the line when others fall at different fences. Even though he won a few Sigersons with Séamus Moynihan for IT Tralee, Jim McGuinness could emulate Foinavon in the 1967 Grand National. Heresy, going outside Kerry for a manager? And what’s more it’s a long ways from Donegal to Tralee. How many euros per km?

|

NEW CHAIRMAN

There is another consideration. The chairman of the county board must get on well with the football manager to ensure success. Tim Murphy has to vacate the chair at County Convention in December. Vice-Chair Eamonn Whelan is odds-on to take over. Unopposed? I’m not so sure and there may be a contest. I don’t expect early evidence of white smoke when it comes to announcing the next Kerry manager. Get it wrong and it will be a winter of discontent.

STILL IN THE RUNNING? Offering Peter Keane an extension is just one of a number of options available to the Kerry County Board. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

TARGET: Everton's Demarai Gray has scored three league goals already this season.

Everton winger Gray tipped to score After a disappointing outing for him and his club last time out, Everton winger Demarai Gray has been singled out as a potential Fantasy Premier League transfer target ahead of Gameweek 6 of the 2021/22 season. Gray and his teammates fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat away to Aston Villa last weekend but some favourable-looking fixtures has led the FPL Scout to suggest that the speedy wide player could be a difference maker over the next number of weeks. “The Everton winger has provided fantasy managers with a major source of value in the opening gameweeks,” the Scout said. “Initially costing £5.5m, Gray has emerged as a key player for Rafa Benitez’s new-look side this season. The summer signing has scored in three of the last four gameweeks, netting against Leeds United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Burnley. “That form has made Gray a popular pick in the cut-price bracket. Indeed, he is the third-most bought midfielder this season, earning over 1.64 million new owners. “The underlying statistics show why Gray has been an immediate success for Everton. His 10 shots and six shots inside the penalty area both place second for the Toffees. And his six chances created rank third. “Everton are now set to embark of a run of three home matches in the next four gameweeks, lifting the appeal of investing in their key players. The Toffees entertain bottom-club Norwich City this weekend before also hosting West Ham United and Watford across that run. “Notably, their form at Goodison Park has been a big factor behind Everton’s sixth-place position. They have won both home encounters this season, scoring three goals on each occasion. That looks encouraging this weekend against a Norwich side who have struggled defensively this season. The Canaries have conceded 14 goals and 17 big chances, both

league-leading totals. Gray’s growing influence can help him deliver more points across Everton’s run of home matches, offering managers standout value in fantasy.

Two of the remaining KSBGL Summer Cup finals were decided this week. In the U12 final, St Brendan’s Park made the better start at Georgie O’Callaghan Park as they scored two firsthalf goals against Mastergeeha. Johnny Neilings and Jack Daly with a cracking header were the scorers for the Tralee lads. In the second half, Player of the Match Edison Jahiri made it 3-0 but credit to Mastergeeha they pulled one back through Roan Guerin. They had a great chance of making it 3-2 but Park keeper Samson Abubaker made a great diving save. The Park also had a number of chances to increase their lead but Mastergeeha keeper Hugh McGuire was in inspired form making a string of saves. But in the end the Tralee side held on for the win with St Brendan’s Park being crowned U12 Summer Cup champions. The U15 final saw Killarney Celtic welcome Park to Celtic Park and it was the visitors who took the lead through Andrew Kerins. It stayed that way until the second half when Josh Bowler equalised for Celtic, and then Callum Cronin got the goal that proved to be the winner for the hosts. The Shield proved to be a happier hunting ground for Park as they defeated Ballyhar Dynamos at Christy Leahy Park. Their goals came from Arik Jaszczynski (two), Callum O’Brien, Kuba Mikolajczuki and Fionn Dyro. For Ballyhar, who battled until the end, Colm Riordan and Gavin O’Sulllivan did well.

ATHLETIC DEFEAT PARK IN U12 LEAGUE

There were two games played in the Slattery’s Carpets and Blinds U12 league with Killarney Athletic beating St Brendan’s Park in the Premier Division. The Athletic goals came from Enna Hennigan (two), Callum Cox, Cian Hegarty and Conor Moynihan. In the U12 Division 1 North, Tralee Dynamos B won 5-2 at LB Rovers with goals from Eddie Carmody (three), Cian Fitzgerald and Rian Duffy. Rodrigo Guzman and Finn O’Sullivan found the target for Rovers.

STANDINGS

In the Killarney Advertiser League in association with Brian James, Denis O’Connor now leads the way on 272 points. O’Connor got 74 points in Gameweek 5, thanks largely to his captain, Mo Salah, who bagged him 24 in total. Our league leader’s incredible overall tally means that he is currently ranked 47th in Ireland and number 1,137 in the entire world. Seán Gibson is second in the Killarney Advertiser League on 407 with Rick Fleming, L Walsh and Seán Doolan completing the top five. For the second year in a row, the Killarney Advertiser has been confirmed as the biggest fantasy football league in Kerry with over 1,100 participants in total. The top manager each month wins a €50 voucher from our sponsors, Brian James, with the overall winner taking home the top prize: a Brian James voucher worth €250.

Killarney golfers bridge 19-year gap to win All-Ireland title After a tense weekend of action which featured some spectacular golf, Killarney are AIG Junior Cup Champions for 2021, almost two decades after they last lifted the trophy in 2002. It was a long weekend of matches in Limerick Golf Club with the quarter-final on the Saturday against a strongly fancied Naas GC team. Following a titanic struggle which went to down to the 20th hole (Mark Tuite holed a spectacular 10-footer on the 19th), Killarney prevailed to tee up a last four clash with Ballinasloe GC. The semi-final on the Sunday morning was another extremely tight affair; this time Jason Arthur made a terrific par on the 19th after being out of position off the tee which led to a slender 3-2 victory. The final on the Sunday afternoon against Corrstown was a tough proposition on paper as the Dublin side had dominant results in the quarters and semis. However, Killarney started extremely well and shot into an early lead in all five matches. Killarney continued in this vein for the entire match and in the end delivered a
