Killarney boys impromptu video nears 2m online hits An impromptu trad session on a Ryanair flight involving Killarney students - has taken off online with almost 2 million views - after a video was posted on Tuesday. Students from St Brendan’s College Killarney, broke into music, song and dance whilst on a return flight home - following their Britain’s Got Talent Auditions in the London Palladium on Sunday. Allowed to take some of their instruments on board the flight - the elated boys - who received a standing ovation from the 2,000 strong BGT crowd - had been on a high. But their happiness soared even more after they got home and realised Tuesday that their video had gone viral. The boys, a mix of first to sixth years and their teachers Mish O’Donoghue and Niamh O’Connell, were shocked to discover the 1 minute and 46 long video had received almost a quarter of a million views within four hours of Ryanair
staff posting the video on their Facebook page. And since then it has continued to receive hits, has had 42k likes, had 21,132 shares and 6.5K comments. Teacher Mish said that the boys did very well in their audition and even received a standing ovation. However, it was after the flight home that took them by surprise. They were in school when they heard the video was getting huge hits online, she explained.
Financial crisis could seriously impact Kerry Deaf services A financial crisis which has hit the Irish Deaf Society this week - could mean a huge loss of Deaf services in Kerry - from this March. With funds running low and following an emergency meeting on Saturday in Dublin, the Irish Deaf Society (IDS) has taken the decision to prepare to close its doors - as it has failed to secure financial support from the Government or another state body. The news comes just one year after the Government officially recognised Irish Sign Language as an official language in Ireland. It’s also the first time in 38 years, since IDS set up, that core funding for the service has been an issue. The decision to close down will also affect IDS services, including IDS Advocacy, the Irish Sign Language Academy and the Deaf Adult Literary Services. It came a huge shock to members of
Christine O'Donoghue from Killarney town with Bernadette O'Connor.
Kerry’s Deaf community especially as just this week Dublin City University unveiled a new undergraduate programme which will enable Deaf and hard of hearing people who use Irish Sign Language (ISL) to enter primary teaching.
“It’s unbelievable and beyond our wildest dreams,” Mish told the Killarney Advertiser. “We were here in school on Tuesday and someone said Ryanair had put the video of the singsong on their Facebook page. “It’s all been a whirlwind since. We’re just enjoying this feelgood factor.” She added that it’ll be at least three weeks before they hear if the boys have made it through to the live shows of one of the world’s biggest talent shows. This week, Killarney woman Christine O’Donoghue, who is Deaf and teaches literacy to members of the Deaf community in Kerry, says she is shocked with the sudden news. Both Christine and Bernadette O’Connor from Kerry Deaf Women's Group (KDG), along with Kerry Deaf Resource Centre in Tralee who provide an invaluable service to the Deaf and hard of hearing in Kerry, are calling on the public to support their campaign to save the service. They plan to get a petition together and lobby TDs to put pressure on the Government to secure financial support and keep the service going. “I’m absolutely shocked,” Christine told the Killarney Advertiser through an interpreter, on Thursday. “It's both a disappointment and a shock. If there’s no support, where do Deaf people go and what do they do? To think this has happened after ISL was recognised is so unexpected. Without the core funding we’re going back to square one - the days of no opportunities."
New garda text service planned Following the success of the 'See Something, Say Something' campaign in Tralee, which was launched last July, Superintendent Flor Murphy from Killarney Garda Station, told the Joint Policing on Friday that plans are underway for a similar service in Killarney town. The 'See Something, Say Something’ campaign was an initiative by Tralee Chamber Alliance in partnership with An Garda Síochána - and the first of its kind in Ireland. It allows members of the public who ‘see something’ that might need Garda intervention, to ‘say something’ by texting TRALEE and the incident details to 50555. And at Friday’s JPC meeting which was held in County Buildings, it was revealed that the campaign has been a huge success to date. According to Superintendent Murphy, plans are in place to roll it out in Killarney town in the coming months. “Last week I sat down with the Killarney Chamber to progress this,” Superintendent Murphy told the JPC. "They got a presentation in terms of the benefits and the issues involved.” He said that the Chamber will be ultimately financing it. "They are actively considering the proposal at the moment. It’s important to point out that this doesn’t take away from the 999 system. This is an anonymous means of conveying information to us. The existing 999 system for emergency response in terms of crimes being committed will still be there. This provides another means of providing information to us and ultimately it means we have more eyes and ears out there in the community. It is being actively considered and hopefully will be progressed in Killarney.” Mayor of Killarney Cllr John Sheahan, Cllr Donal O'Grady and Cllr Brendan Cronin welcomed the initiative. Cllr Quigley also asked for something similar to be rolled out in Killorglin.

Deer accidents are costing lives - say locals Concerned Killarney locals are calling for greater safety measures - or regular deer culling - to prevent further loss of life and accidents in the town.
Locals say urgent fencing needs to be erected and gates put in place at certain locations to prevent wild deer from freely roaming out onto roads, saying the Ballydowney, Castlerosse and Muckross areas of the town are the worst affected. This week, families who have lost loved ones, TD Michael Healy-Rae, Cllr John Joe Culloty, retired coroner Terence Casey and others have lent their voices to a campaign to make Killarney safer by fencing off certain areas of Killarney National Park. Just this week nine deer died after a herd was struck by a train in between Limerick Junction and Thurles. Locals say free roaming deer are causing
huge obstructions for motorists day and night - and it needs urgent attention from authorities involved. After being contacted by the Killarney Advertiser this week, the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), said that they are aware that wild deer have been involved in collisions with vehicles. However, they told this publication that it not possible to ‘cordon them to specific areas of land’ and ‘wild deer in the State are protected under the Wildlife Acts’. “Fencing this area would be an enormous task which is unlikely to result in the desired objective,” the NPWS said. “The Department is of the view that improving sight lines for motorists as well as improved larger signage is likely to be
the most effective measure to assist motorists when driving through areas where populations of deer can be expected. “Officials from my Department have discussed this with Kerry County Council and the Department understands that Kerry County Council have prepared a scheme of works, which includes a number of measures including trimming back of overhanging tree branches, enhancement/relocation of road-side signs, etc., in this regard.” Sika deer, NPWS added, are capable of going under fencing that is eight inches off the ground while red deer are capable of knocking fences that are preventing them from reaching traditional feeding and shelter grounds.
“Hitting deer is like hitting a stone wall - it’s extremely dangerous” Retired coroner Terence Casey, says he has come across a number of fatal accidents in this area over the years. “I remember after the death of Susan Von der Geest back in 2014, I called upon the Board of Works to fence off the place here (Ballydowney) from the main road because originally there was a five foot wall here, and when that wall was here you didn’t hear of many accidents. Now, it can be seen as free for the deer to come from the fields through the trees and cross the road. There’s nothing to stop them, nothing to hinder them. It’s extremely dangerous. He explained that after that inquest the
amount of phone calls he received from people who had accidents, was unbelievable. “Only material damage - thankfully not fatal, and nothing can be done. I wrote to the Board of Works and I asked them to put up a fence. I got the reaction back that it would be an eyesore on the main Killarney Road. I said put it 10 or 15 feet into the wood at least it would stop the free flow of animals out. Their answer was more or less ‘but sure they’ll jump the fence anyway’.
If you look into the woods they don’t have enough running room to jump high. If it hindered 50 percent of the them coming out onto the road wouldn’t it be worth it?” He said that many years ago the wall was demolished but “absolutely nothing” was put up to stop the deer or any other wild animal coming out on to the road. “If a fox came out on to the road you could brake or swerve to avoid it - but a deer - you’ve no chance. If it’s a red deer - it’s like hitting a stone wall. The amount of people who have had accidents and reported it to the gardai - the gardai can do nothing about it because it’s not a
“The erection of a fence this size could also impact on the sensitive habitats within the Park. “There are many deer outside the Park boundaries which would still be capable of running into the path of motorists.” TD Michael Healy-Rae said that this has been an issue he has raised in the Dáil numerous times over the years. “I love to see the fine red deer like everyone else but they’re out of control. “Deer are now in places they hadn’t been before,” he said. “The deer are so bad, they’re like a plague of rats.” He explained that the only way of controlling the deer is by regular culling. “We need to reduce our deer population in Ireland by 70 percent. The deer will go then to their natural habitat higher up and away from people. “If you reduce the herd of all species by 70 percent, it’d be more sustainable. "They’re costing lives. There have been accidents I fully attribute to deer. “People are swerving and we’ve had accidents that are not accounted for which have been caused by deer.” And he added that he regularly hears about accidents involving deer, from his constituents. “I hear it on a continuous basis. “There’s a section of road between Kilgarvan and the main Killarney Road there are accidents there involving deer every week.” Local man Christy Sheehan said that he knows of two people who were killed on the road at Ballydowney just beyond the golf club 25 years ago. “I see so many fellas coming to me saying I was so close to hitting a deer. Something should be done before someone else is killed or injured.” criminal offence - they’re wild animals. The liability in my mind is back on the OPW to put up some sort of a fence to stop the free flow of animals out onto the road. It may not stop them all but it’ll stop the free flow. And if that saves one life - isn’t it worth it?”

“Something has to be done before someone else dies” Partner calls for urgent fencing before another fatal accident occurs at Ballydowney. Donal Moroney lost his partner Susan Von der Geest five years ago after her car suddenly left the road and hit a tree at Ballydowney. It’s believed she had swerved to avoid deer on the road. The couple’s youngest child, daughter Louisa who was then aged eight, luckily escaped with less serious injuries and has no memory of that tragic day. The mother of four had been travelling to Cork with Louisa for an appointment at around 10am, on January 6, 2014. Donal this week told the Killarney Advertiser that “something has to be done before someone else dies”. “My partner Suzie and youngest daughter Louisa were going to Killarney and were going to get the bus to Cork for an appointment,” he explained. “Not too long after she left, maybe half an hour, I got the call from the Gardai that she had died in the crash and that my daughter was gone to hospital injured. “Her car just left the road suddenly and hit the tree. They cut down some trees since it happened." He said that ever since then he regularly sees deer crossing the road there. “As late as a few days ago I saw seven deer at the same spot of the accident. It’s totally irresponsible of whoever’s in charge. It’s one of the busiest roads in Kerry - it’s the Ring of Kerry road, a main thoroughfare between Killorglin,
which is a big employer at the moment, and Killarney. “There’s no protection what-so-ever from animals going out on the road. If that was a private farm you’d have to have your animals fenced in. No one seems to want to take responsibility. It’s another accident waiting to happen.” He said that just a week after she died another accident happened there. “When they wander out they come out of the trees and they blend in and you can’t see anything. They’re totally camouflaged, next thing he just wanders out on to the road and you see him at the last second - a deer as big as a cow.” There should be some big signs put up for the public, he added. “They should definitely have fencing, I mean how many busses pass here every day during the high season. It’s only a matter of time before a much more catastrophic accident happens. Everything should be investigated. There’s so many roads coming on to here (Ballydowney). It’s a highly dangerous bend. They took down a wall here many years ago. That was a definite barrier. When they took down the wall what were they planning? They should have put a barrier back up. We miss her terribly.”
SAFETY CONCERNS: Gillian Hughes, Christy Sheehan, Terence Casey, Cllr John Joe Culloty and Donal Moroney say deer are a danger to motorists in Killarney town.
A better deer management plan is needed - says Cllr Cllr John Joe Culloty this week told the Killarney Advertiser that the number of deer are too high in the National Park and that culling needs to be done. “Deer hunting season opens the first of September so there should be a lot of deer culled at this stage,” he said. “I don’t think they are and certainly there aren’t enough deer being culled. “There is a process there where they need to get a deer management plan where they can be told what deer to cull, where to cull them, when to cull them, how to cull them - and follow that plan.” He added that the ecology of the park is also being compromised. “There are too many deer in the park and they’re wandering around on the roads. And it’s only a matter of time before there will be a death because there are too many accidents.”
As a councillor, he says that he regularly hears about the huge amount of accidents and near misses from his constituents. "I get regular calls,” he said. “At the end of the day it’s people’s lives that matter. I do think there’s merit in putting up a fence - it’s too important. “It’s here (Ballydowney) the numbers of deer are too high but you have the same thing on the other side (Muckross).” He added that fencing wouldn’t really be an option on the Muckross side but that culling and keeping the numbers down is the only answer. "All you can do is keep the numbers to a sustainable level. “Culling deer is a humane thing to do if it’s done right, and the fellas that do this are professionals but they’re not getting either financed to do it or they haven’t the numbers to do it - but it’s not being done to the level it should be.”
“Somebody is going to get killed again” Gillian Hughes sister Paula O’Shea lost her life on the Ballydowney road when she was just 23 yearsold. The accident happened on a June night at approximately 2am. It’s believed she swerved to avoid deer on the road. “We believe she swerved from a deer and she hit the fencing post,” Gillian told the Killarney Advertiser this week. Paula initially survived but was later pronounced dead at the hospital. “There was deer reported 10 to 15 min-
utes before the accident. The same girl would have swerved - she loved animals. “She was doing 45 miles an hour, they were satisfied (the garda technical experts). They could tell what speed she was doing. “She’d have been able to take that turn at 60mph they were saying. Her tyre pressure was good, the car was in good working order, there was no reason for her to leave the road. There was no brake marks - she had to swerve from something.” Gillian said that something needs to be done urgently.
“I came on an accident myself three years ago, she had hit the deer right here (Ballydowney), the deer ran across the road in front of other cars. I got out and tried to help her - it was black dark, 7pm on a winter evening. He could have caused another accident. I have reported at least 10 times every time I see a deer on the road I report it. I’ve seen deer several times myself - on the roundabout at Ballydowney, a herd of them crossed in front of me one night. They’re just everywhere. “Another time, I’d say Paula wasn’t dead
a month, I was driving from Killarney and four or five of them came down a road and crossed in front of me. “It happens all the time and you get an awful fright. “Somebody is going to get killed again it’s only a matter of time.” Her solution to the problem is to erect fencing. “Fence them back - it’s the only thing for it. Maybe the fence doesn’t have to be along the edge of the road, could it not go further back? Just to stop them coming in.”

Killarney's Liberace set for the big lights of London

Brexit the key issue at second annual Killarney Economic Conference | By Anne Lucey
Brexit remained the key issue at this year’s Killarney Economic Conference held in the The Brehon/INEC complex, on Thursday and Friday last. Up to thirty economic, civic and political leaders from Britain and Ireland spoke at the second annual conference, including former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin, Ryanair’s Chief Operating Officer Peter Bellew, Ed Sibley Deputy Governor with the Central Bank, Mark Kennedy from Mazars, and Professor Eilis Ferran, University of Cambridge. Ryanair’s Chief Operating Officer and Killarney resident Peter Bellew, formerly of Kerry Airport spoke at the event and said that as an airline, Ryanair had decided “not to be bashing the English”. Mr Bellew told the packed conference that there was too much "gloating" here about England’s difficulties with Brexit. He urged a softer more helpful approach from Government, businesses and people here - and to move on from the obsession with backstops “and the devil knows what else” - to a more positive front.
“We need to get behind the UK economy a little bit more, and end a lot of the gloating that is going on,” Mr Bellew said. Cahersiveen native Brigid Laffan, who went to Loreto Convent in Killarney, and now Professor and Director at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, said in some sections of the UK media and in some circles, either Ireland was “a stooge” of the EU, or Ireland was running the EU. “Brexit is extremely damaging to British-Irish relations. It will be in some ways the final breaking of that umbilical cord,” Ms Laffan said of the impact. Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin gave the keynote address of the conference on Friday. Brexit was “the defining issue of our age” and the decay of British politics had been a tragedy. Ireland must reposition itself not only in terms of its relations with UK, but also take a more active role in Europe, he said.
Jack Patrick Healy, best known for his entertaining music and friendliness in The Liquid Lounge at the Killarney Grand, made the decision to say farewell to the town he loves so well - as he has just been signed with a musical-theatre agent in the West End. Currently he’s in London but is planning his final farewell show in the Liquid Lounge, Killarney Grand, on Saturday March 2, at 11.30pm. He began his music career under the training of the Tara Little Stage School Company and studied vocal training with Rebecca Storm of ‘Blood Brothers’ fame and Peter Corry of ‘Les Misérables’. He went on to work as resident pianist and entertainer in Nick’s Restaurant Killorglin in 2010, then on to The Plaza Hotel Killarney, and finally for the past three
years, in The Liquid Lounge. Last November, he took his award-winning show to Chicago, Germany/Switzerland and Austria prior to the States, and is now moving over lock, stock and barrel to the bright lights of London. “I’m thrilled to be moving over completely, and brightening my horizons with my fantastic girlfriend Emma-Jane, who is a native of North Kensington,” Jack told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I have just been signed with a musical-theatre agent for work on the West End stages and I’m looking forward to working on Kensington High Street and Notting Hill with my piano-bar show.”
Riona plans fundraising concerts for sick brother Ross The younger sister of a Killarney man diagnosed with a rare cancer - is this week appealing for public support - to help raise €32,000 for his treatment. Riona Hurley (33), was shocked to learn her brother Ross (38), who is originally from St Brendan’s Terrace, Killarney, was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer, she is now planning two fundraising concerts in the coming weeks. Ross and his wife Nina, who now both live in Callinafercy, are aiming to raise €180,000 for CAR-T-Cell therapy in Bangkok. However, to get the first round of treatment underway, they need to urgently fundraise €32,000. To help, Riona has planned a concert this Saturday night in the Mills, Ballyvourney, with Makem and Clancy, featuring Dan O’Sullivan. The second will take place in Wednesday, February 6, in the Killarney Grand at 11.30pm with live music by George Murphy. “I felt I wanted to do something to help.
We’re appealing for public support to raise the €32,000 to get him through his first round of treatment.” This Saturday night’s event costs €10 and tickets will be available on the door. “Back in the day Dan O’Sullivan played a lot of music with Makem and Clancy,” she said. On February 6, tickets cost €10 and there’ll also be a raffle. “We have lots of prizes sponsored by local businesses. People have been great in fairness. There will be more fundraisers that I’ll be coming up with in the near future. Every little counts.”

Students grill Central Bank Deputy Governor on Brexit and the economy Students from St Brendan’s College had a lot to think about after a very interesting speaker called for a visit on Friday morning. Deputy Governor Sibley, Prudential Regulation with the Central Bank, spoke to both the TY and Leaving Cert students on topics such as the economy and Brexit. He explained the Central Bank’s work and answered over 20 questions from the students, who showed they have a keen eye on the future and a deep knowledge of economic affairs - with issues around Brexit being of specific concern.
Governor Sibley also presented information on working in the Central Bank. At least one former St Brendan’s student, Ulick O’Sullivan, already works there. It followed an appearance by Deputy Governor Sibley at the Killarney Economic Conference on Thursday last (January 17). At the panel event he spoke about Central Bank preparations for Brexit in the financial sector.

THE
Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney,Kerry and beyond
People are drawn towards Bertie
Bertie Ahern was the keynote speaker at the Brexit conference in Killarney during the week. And the speech, whoever wrote it for him, was a bit of a world history, powering through Pharaoh to Confucius, down to John F Kennedy, tracing the way the world has evolved its international relations. Terms like multilateralism and globalism were thrown around like confetti. It came to life when Bertie rounded on President Trump and accused him of dismantling that historic international relations "architecture". The speech was tough going, not only to deliver - but to follow. And it was even tougher to pull a news line that would be of interest to the general public. But Bertie came truly to life in his asides - a second referendum would be “dicey” (I was reminded of that Dublin song featuring poor auld ‘Dicey Reilly’); and if the right Democratic candidate came up in the US, Bertie said he’d go canvass for them just to get rid of Trump! I would have met Bertie several times, work wise, over the years. Like others, I would be dispatched to get a few lines on some breaking story as he attended a function in Killarney or the Listowel Races, or even once down to Parknasilla where he was holidaying with his daughters. He’d never run from the media and would always prepare for the formal interview, and his press secretary would hover nervously while he would make a few remarks, and he would philosophise on whatever was on his mind while waiting for the cameras and notebooks to come out. It could be the general state of journalism and newspapers - or their negativity. What he saw as newspaper negativity always baffled him and he wondered how editors especially could "do that " day after day, and why the focus was not on achievements. He once mused to me outside St Michael’s College in Listowel on a September morning about the Listowel Races. Actually his musings were in the nature of soliloquies - or the Irish men sitting at a bar talking facing straight ahead - but never really turning towards each other -talking

away more or less regardless who is alongside them! Or he might talk about the nice outdoor spa area in Parknasilla. You never really got to hear the third secret of Fatima, although I was for a time banned from speaking to him by an angry secretariat because he had revealed too much during a door step interview at the former Torc Hotel. I think it was in the context of one of the lost EU referendums, ironically. But after his departure and the end of boom, and the tribunal into something or other which revealed as Minister for Finance he had no cheque book, and had about 50 friends, all giving him "a dig out", he seemed to fade out. I hadn’t met him since his halcyon days and was intrigued on Thursday to find the same old Bertie. There he was jumping on the stage and testing the microphone in the empty conference room. At the same time people were drawn towards him, warm in their approaches, shaking his hand. He may well not be as straight laced and severe and controlling as say
John Bruton, or as snobby and at the same time as bleeding heart as “Leo” - or as ‘smiley smiley’ as Enda whose smile and bonhomie I always felt concealed a very hard edge, or as cutting and mean as Haughey and his drinking buddy cronies. But, in my opinion, there is a quality of natural leadership about Bertie that surpasses any of them. What it is - I don’t know. I’d have them all parsed and analysed in a very short time after similar brief meetings - good and bad qualities! But Bertie eludes that kind of analysis. In fact, he may not have half the “talents” and hard line “principles” of the others - and yet I wasn’t the only one to remark how much he outshone all the current crop of political leaders, and how comfortable and unthreatened people felt around him. As I said, the ineffable quality of natural leadership - Bertie has it in spades. Maybe that’s why the trade unionists left the picket lines that gave us decades of peace when he was Minister for Labour and introduced the first National Wage Agreement.
It may also explain why when he was Taoiseach, those other unionists - the orange kind, were all prepared to listen to him bring about the historic Good Friday Agreement. Maybe England or even this government with their hard line positions could do with him right now. Meanwhile, there were mixed messages from the very engaging conference about Brexit. ‘Brexit had become boring’- Ahern. ‘Brexit was the defining issue of our age’ - Micheál Martin. It would be brutal, but may also not be as brutal as some people predict. Flights would not be grounded for three weeks, we heard. Toilet paper would run out partly because the Brits had no paper industry and they used more of the stuff than most. We also heard about low grade hostility to the Irish. Brigid Laffan who went to school in Killarney beat the nationalist drum a bit hard I thought, saying the Irish had never accepted the dominance of the British. She is right of course that the umbilical cord will finally be cut when they leave Europe, while we will stay in the EU. I am not sure though that this will be an outright blessing, and I think she has a rather rose tinted view of the EU which we heard was itself a bit isolationist. On the other hand we heard from our own Peter Bellew how England had done so much for us and we should treat the English with more understanding at its hour of need. Our own CEO Moira Murrell gave an impressive contribution. She laid out in no uncertain terms how a rural Kerry needed collaboration and cooperation from all sides if it were to build up decent jobs. Fexco, the ITT and the Council were working together. “We are seeing depopulation. Kerry has one of third level achievers but one of the lowest levels of people with third level returning,” she said. The challenge was to create career paths for people so they could have the great quality of life that is on offer, as well as a career, the CEO said. Word on the ground is a third conference is being planned for next year. It replaces, of course, the Kenmare Economic Conference which for years had set the agenda nationally. Let us hope this is the case with Killarney - and next year it will be post Brexit!

Local musician plans funding campaign for sick grandniece
Local beekeepers are planning a series of educational talks in Killarney this spring. Pictured were: Dennis O'Shea, Pat O'Connor, Ian Flude and Tim O'Regan (Chair Kerry Beekeepers Association). Pic: Dylan Clifford.
Educational talks will be buzzing with information There is a buzz in the air as local beekeepers are planning a series of educational talks in Killarney this spring. Aspiring beekeepers, beginners and experienced beekeepers alike, are invited to come along to the talks, starting on February 21. “There is a growing awareness of the lack of pollinators which are needed to produce good crops for harvest, and this is creating a growing interest in beekeeping,” Tim Regan, Chair of Kerry Beekeepers Association, who are organising the talks, said. Kerry Beekeepers Association is a small but long-established group based in Killarney and are always eager to welcome new members who can join in with their ongoing programme of educational and social meetings. “Beekeeping is a fascinating and rewarding occupation for the hobbyist and professional alike, with ongoing
scope for lifelong learning and international contacts. “We are affiliated to The Federation of Irish Beekeepers Associations (FIBKA) with a national membership of 3,000+ and an internationally respected five day annual meeting at Gormanston.” The talks begin on Thursday February 21, where Pat Curran will speak about equipment needed, the year's work including assembling frames and spring feeding, and participants will receive a booklet outlining the management of a bee colony. On Thursday February 28, Irene Power will talk about spring management, exploring Queens in hives and nuclei. Then on March 7, Eleanor Attridge CFL, will focus on controlling bees and working for honey and stock increase, and on
Thursday March 14, Dennis Ryan CFL, will speak about summer apiary management, harvesting the honey and treating the bees for varroa. “The programme for each evening will include an educational talk presented by an experienced beekeeper, followed by an interactive discussion and a cup of tea/coffee. “Participants will be able to acquire hives of bees at the end of the series of talks if required,” he said. “If you are interested in the talks, please register and come along to the series of lectures from 7.30 – 9pm at the Teagasc Offices, Cleeney, Tralee Road, Killarney where you will get a warm welcome.” Total cost of talks €25, while individual talks are €10. If you decide to become a member, the cost of talks will be deducted from your membership fee. For registration details email Kerry Beekeepers Association Secretary Ian Flude at: id.flude@btinternet.com.
Carlow native but Kerry resident for decades, well known musician Mick Kavanagh is planning a musical fundraiser for his sick grandniece. Mick hopes to raise funds for seven year-old Callee Kavanagh, who lives in Carlow, after she was diagnosed with a rare cancer in March 2018. He is arranging a musical fundraiser for his grandniece Callee in the East Avenue Hotel, Killarney on Friday February 15. Callee is the daughter of Mick’s nephew Adam Kavanagh and wife Shauna. She has been treated in Crumlin Children’s Hospital, Dublin from June 2018, but now requires specialist treatment in Dussledorf Germany. Apart from the USA, Germany is the only place which offers this advancd treatmeent which, basically, subjects the cancer to an aggressive attack of a Proton treatment which is now regarded as a more effective treatment than radiation or chemotherapy, he explained. “The length of treatment time is flexible, depending on the patient, with a minimum treatment time of three months,” he said. “The cost of this treatment is prohibitive and as Callee’s mother has taken leave from the start of her treatment and her father will travel with them to Germany relatives and friends are fundraising in Carlow.” Being well-known in the entertainment industry Mick has received the backing of a fellow musicians in the locality and has lined up a glittering array of talent for the night. “Fellow musician and Radio Kerry presenter, Dermot Moriarty, has kindly volunteered his services as MC for the night. “There will be a raffle for the numerous spot-prizes donated by the generous people of Killarney and others, and there will be an auction for, among other items, a signed sports jersey.” Mick would like to acknowledge the assistance given by Michael O’Donoghue and management and staff of the East Avenue Hotel’s amenities and the provision of finger-food on the night. He would also like to thank all the local musicians who have volunteered their services together with the organising group.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,
Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues
DISTRICT FAMILY LAW COURT ORDERS In the District Court there are various applications that can be made and Orders sought where there is a relationship breakdown between persons who are married couples or cohabiting couples or merely living together under the same roof. We previously highlighted this under the recent amendments to the new Domestic Violence Legislation, Domestic Violence Act, 2019, which in itself brings together much of the Domestic Violence Legislation and provides for protection of persons within its remit. Under this Legislation, Safety Orders can be applied for, and there are applications to the District Court which prohibits a person with a propensity for violence to commit other and further acts of violence or even a threat of violence. It does not necessarily require the person to leave the house that they share with the applicant but prohibits them from threatening violence or intimidatory behaviour towards them. From January the 1st of this year with the dawn of the new legislation, this now extends the remit of persons that can apply for such an application before the Court. Relevant persons can also make an application to the Court for a Barring Order that is to bar a violent or intimidatory individual from the home and again the remit of persons who can make this application is set out in the Legislation and at this point a full application is heard before the Court before the Order is made. However, there is also the opportunity of applying for an Interim Barring Order which covers the period of time before the application is formally made in Court. However, there must be evidence provided that there is an immediate and serious risk for the safety and welfare of persons within the house to facilitate the Court making such an immediate
Order. The Interim Barring Order as the name suggests, will bar the Respondent to such an application pending the full Barring Order being heard within 8 days once an Interim Barring Order is successfully made and served on the respondent, it has immediate effect. The Application for an Interim Barring Order is usually made Ex Parte which means that only one party (the Applicant) making the claim, attends Court. In the circumstances where a Safety Order as referred to above is applied for, there is the option for an Applicant to apply before the Court for a Protection Order and this is in effect a temporary Order which will be granted once the Court has evidence for believing that the safety, health and welfare of the applicant is at risk. The Court will normally make such an Order where evidence is provided that the applicant is again under risk of violence or intimidation and/or threat of violence or if someone was watching and besetting the applicant. Of course, the District Court can also deal with applications of access and maintenance under the Family Law Legislation where parties between themselves cannot agree on same. As with all such Court Orders, failure to comply with same shall invariably lead to serious consequences where there is a breach of the District Court Orders obtained.. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

Catholic Schools Week launched in Rathmore Catholic Schools Week was launched by the Bishop of Kerry at Holy Family National School Rathmore this week. The annual event, which this year has the theme of ‘Celebrating the Work of our own Catholic School’, begins this Sunday, January 27, and continues until the following Sunday. “Visiting Rathmore Primary School, I am delighted to launch Catholic Schools Week 2019,” Bishop Ray Browne said. “It is a theme that encourages us to
recall the history and traditions of our own school and to appreciate them. There is always a danger that familiarity can lead to taking things for granted. You have much to celebrate.” He explained that a key strength of schools is that they are local. “The whole school staff know the local people and know and respect their vi-
sion for their children. For many years now the members of each school Board of Management are local people. “Three characteristics of every school are: welcoming diversity, serving the local community and supporting faith. These are very important amid all the changes in Irish society today.” The key to a Catholic School is faith and confidence in God, he added. “Our faith tells us that God created the world and at its heart placed the human
family, ‘female and male he created them’. The Bible gives us six very important small words, ‘God saw that it was good’. Our faith and confidence is in a caring, loving God.” Values are central to a Catholic school, he added. “All our values have as their foundation the words of Jesus, ‘Love one another, as I have loved you’. Care for one another, the dignity of every person, respect, mercy, fairness, and justice - all values have their origins in God’s love. “This year each community is asked to focus on their own local school. In celebrating Catholic Schools Week - enjoy remembering the past, honouring the present, and committing to give of your best in the future. God bless every school community, staff, pupils and their families.”
Pupils welcome Bishop to their school On Friday last, staff and pupils of Shrone National School were honoured to welcome Bishop Ray Browne to their school - exactly 16 years since a Bishop visited the school. The children spoke at length about the themes of Catholic School Week 2019. They spoke on the theme of Living Tradition, Welcoming Diversity, Grandparents Day, In Service to the Community and Supporting Faith. “In keeping with tradition we showcased some of our Sliabh Luachra talent,” Michelle Murphy from Shrone NS said. “The pupils performed a three hand reel and a half set accompanied by Padraig on the accordion. The Junior and Senior Infants performed a poem. “We concluded with a little prayer service and a blessing from the Bishop.”

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING “Since moving to Killarney from Wales in 2016, I was always aiming to start up my own independent physiotherapy clinic. Since making the jump in August of 2018, the success of my clinic so far has in no small part been down to the team at the Killarney Advertiser. I was really surprised at the number of enquiries that come through the advertiser. With their advice and support my clinic is going from strength to strength and is worth every penny. I would highly recommend anyone considering doing advertising, to do so with the Killarney Advertiser team. Thanks again!.”

Nurse Noreen retires after 45 years-service Friday night was very emotional for one local lady as she said a final goodbye to a 45 year nursing career. Although she officially retired from nursing on December 30, Noreen O’Sullivan, celebrated the milestone with daughter Helen, colleagues and friends in The International Hotel, where she was presented with flowers, cake and a cheque – a collection from her colleagues who will miss her dearly. Born in Millstreet Co Cork, the middle child of a family of five, Noreen was educated in Presentation Convent primary and secondary schools. After completing her Leaving Cert in
September 1972 she emigrated to England where she worked in Lloyds Bank, Pall Mall, for six months. However, she decided office work wasn’t for her. With a love for helping others, she started general nurse training in Hammersmith Hospital, Du Cane Road, London, in February 1973. And after qualifying in February 1976, she returned to Ireland in May that same year to do her midwifery training in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth.
A year later she qualified as a midwife and took up a position in St Catherine’s Hospital, Tralee, on May 31, 1977. She was a familiar face on the Female Medical Ward, the Children’s Ward and Surgical Ward before a transfer to Tralee General Hospital. In 1986, she met and married her husband Donie and they were blessed with a beautiful daughter Helen. Donie sadly passed away in January 2017 after a short illness. Noreen worked in many departments in what is today known as University Hospital Kerry. Her favourite place, she explained, was the Rathass Ward and the
Orthopaedic Dept., where she worked for 20 years. In the last nine years she moved to nursing administration where she worked as a night sister. “Throughout my career I have made many wonderful friends as was reflected at my retirement party,” Noreen told the Killarney Advertiser. “Friends past and present representing every department gathered to give me a royal send off.” She added that over the years there were many changes to nursing including continuous training to keep up-todate with the many changes. “Nursing has evolved so much from the basic training we did - to a degree level now. Everything became more specialised and our training was ongoing all the time to keep up with the changes. “I am now looking forward to pursuing my hobbies; reading, walking and watching tennis, so for now it is “Hello pension – no more tension!,” she said.
20 years at Tricel Tom Murphy (pictured left) celebrates 20 years of continuous service in Tricel Killarney. Tom is pictured with Mike Stack MD Tricel (pictured right). Tom, Tricel's Head of Manufacturing, began his career with the company, in January 1999, as quality manager. Following this, in May of 2003 Tom took
up the position of production manager for Tricel’s Killarney site, and in 2016 received a promotion to Head of Manufacturing, overseeing all manufacturing requirements for Tricel Group companies and locations. Originally from Lismore in Co Waterford, Tom is married to Elaine from Dungarvan, and together they have four children; Roisin, Robbie, Rory and Tom.

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Planning is the key to a successful and bountiful vegetable garden Now is the time to start planning the veg garden! Shops are stocking seeds again, there is a lengthening in the day, all of which means enthusiasm and energy is on the rise! Websites such as Fruithill Farm in Bantry and Irish Seed Savers in Clare are great for their diversity in veg and potato seed, as well as being organic and Irish. A lot of the success of the veg garden hinges on planning. For many of us, raised beds are the handiest way to grow veg, it minimises bending and backache, and gives definite parameters to your plots. I have often written that I am a proponent of the ‘no dig’ method of gardening, and it is ideally suited to raised beds. If, however, you want to dig beds over, do so when it is dry, and if practicable, cover over with polythene so that it doesn’t get too waterlogged. Now is the time to put a good mulch of manure down, or compost, so that the worms have a chance to work it into the soil. Alternatively it can be dug in. Use about a 10cm thick layer for maximum benefit. Farmyard manure is excellent, but take care that it is well rotted - at least one year old. Horse manure is often cited as being best, it is, but a drawback can be the amount of weeds it can cause. If using horse manure, it is best if it has heated up during the summer to
make any grass seed in it unviable! Any vegetable garden should, ideally, have three separate growing areas. One should be used for legumes such as peas, beans, mangetout etc., one for brassicas and onions such as cabbage, radish, sprouts etc., and one used for potatoes and roots, carrots, beets etc. Even better - if you have the space – is to add another bed for alliums; onions, leeks scallions etc., and one for potatoes. By rotating these crops, disease can be avoided, particularly soil borne diseases. The most effective way to employ crop rotation is by rotating in the following order: legumes followed by brassica followed by potatoes. Legumes set nitrogen in the soil which benefits the leafy cabbages. Cabbages are great weed controllers which will benefit the onions in the following year. Salad crops and sweetcorn can be interplanted anywhere there is space. They do not usually suffer from disease and are generally such a quick crop that they are gone before the space is needed. Gardening classes are resuming every Thursday evening in Killarney Community College, suitable for all enthusiastic gardeners, and especially beginners. All aspects are covered, veg, hedging, planning, what plant where, fruit and any subject students wish to learn about. For details please contact the office in the community college during school hours.

Popular ‘Swim for a Mile’ programme is back Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership (KRSP) in collaboration with Swim Ireland, Healthy Ireland, and three public swimming pools in Kerry, are offering a unique coaching programme for adults. The 12 week ‘Swim for a Mile’ programme commences the week beginning February 4. The aim is to swim a mile and participate in a fun and social themed ‘Swim for a Mile’ challenge at the end of April. Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre, Tralee Regional Sports Complex and Ballybunion Health & Leisure Centre, are facilitating a 12-week coached training programme for interested participants. Participants will need to sign up to the event by week five to continue with the coaching programme. In Kerry, there will be three locations facilitating the ‘Swim for a Mile’ challenge event – Killarney on April 26, Ballybunion on April 27, and in Tralee on April 28. “Our programme is open to all abilities especially newcomers to swimming,” Martina Lawless, Programme Facilitator, said. “The one requirement is to be able to swim two consecutive pool lengths. All pools are offering morning, evening and weekend sessions to tie in with busy lifestyles.”
And if you’re unsure if you can swim a mile, this year they have introduced taster sessions where the poolside coaches can offer guidance and advice. For Killarney sessions, call the centre on 064 6636555 and book a time that suits you. “Kerry offers the unique opportunity of coached training with the support of qualified coaches and fellow swimmers as opposed to downloading the training programme from the ‘Swim for a Mile’ website and doing it on your own. “A past participant said she went from struggling for every length to being comfortable and confident. The encouragement from the instructors was invaluable and there was great comradery within the training group.” In order to take part, all participants will need to register for both the 12 week coaching programme on www. kerryrecreationandsports.ie and also register for the event on www. swimforamile.com/signup. The cost is €50/€40 for the coaching programme and €30 for the event.

A case investigated by her own father, just before he took his life. Foodshare Kerry wins €10,000 prize Kerry-based social enterprise, Foodshare Kerry, was the winner of €10,000 at the Social Enterprise Development Fund Showcase Event to help support their fantastic work in helping local charity groups combat food poverty. Courtney Sheehy of Foodshare Kerry pitched in front of an audience of over 100 attendees comprised of her peers and fellow social enterprises who took part in the first year of the Social Enter-

prise Development Fund run by Social Innovation Fund Ireland. Following a live online vote at the event, the innovative Kerry-based project came out on top with runners up, Siel Bleu, who provide life enhancing exercise programmes to older adults and adults living with chronic disease and Helium Arts, who empower children living with illness through their creativity and the arts also winning €6,000 and €4,000 for their projects respectively.
FoodShare Kerry is an initiative of North & East Kerry Development and Saint Vincent de Paul and is an not-for-profit organisation set up to help local charity groups combat food poverty. They rescue quality surplus food from supermarkets and food producers and make it available to organisations who know how best to redistribute it to those in need. The €1.6m Social Enterprise Development Fund was set up last year by Social Innovation Fund Ireland, and Local Authorities Ireland and over two years, will provide funding and supports to social enterprises from across the country. The fund is financed by the Department of Rural and Community Development from the Dormant Accounts and IPB Insurance.
The snow and ice built up around the iconic waterfall, creating stunning scenes for visitors and keen photographers. The US Weather Service issued winter storm warnings or advisories for a swath of the eastern US, an area home to 100 million people, according to meteorologist Rich Otto of the US Weather Prediction Center. The storm system, which was moving from west to east and was strengthened by arctic air from Canada, hit many parts of the midwest on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Water continues to flow under the sheets of ice and the only documented incident of the falls being frozen completely were in March of 1848, when the Buffalo Express Newspaper stated the cause to be ice damming at the mouth of Lake Erie.
Trump still waiting for billions of dollars for border wall “BUILD A WALL & CRIME WILL FALL!” – that’s a recent tweet from the 45th and current President of the United States. President Donald Trump defiantly tweeted this week as the partial US government shutdown entered its 33rd day. Donald Trump said this week that he won’t budge unless he gets the billions of dollars needed for his planned US border wall with Mex-
ico. There’s still no sign of relief for 800,000 US federal workers who are still going without pay because of the partial government shutdown. A strong majority of Americans blame President Donald Trump for the record-long government shutdown, according to a new poll that shows his approval rating is at its lowest level in more than a year.
In a survey conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 34 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance. That’s down from 42 percent last month and nears the lowest mark of his two-year presidency. The president’s approval among Republicans remains close to 80 percent, but his standing with independents is among its lowest points of his time in office.

Kerry man has his prayers answered A Kerry man’s prayers were answered when he realised he had won €289,861 on the Lotto draw - while he was at Mass last Sunday!
Jurassic Skies exhibition at the National Museum Jurassic Skies is a temporary exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks, and runs until March 24. In support of Jurassic Skies, the National Museum of Ireland’s Education & Outreach department will be offering a number of activities centred on the exhibition. An open day for families will take place in National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks on Sunday February 17. Jurassic Skies curators, Dr Matthew Parkes and Paolo Viscardi, will be on hand at the open day to help budding palaeontologists discover more about when dinosaurs took to the air. Scientists from the Geological Survey of Ireland will help visitors make their own fossil and there will be an opportunity to learn more about flight and birds from ornithologist Jamie Durrant. Full programming details are available at www.museum.ie and no booking is required. Jurassic Skies tells the story of the evolution of flight, offering visitors the opportunity to view a number of important, rarely seen fossils from the National Museum of Ireland’s collections. The focal point of the exhibition is the Archaeopteryx, a small dinosaur with special feathers shaped to catch the wind. Archaeopteryx is often thought of as the ‘missing-link’ between dinosaurs and birds. Only twelve skeletal specimens have ever been found, all coming from the Bavarian town of Solnhofen in southern Germany. The fossils Archaeopteryx left behind help us to understand the development of feathered flight. Archaeopteryx is the earliest fossil that shows adaptations to powered flight, with asymmetrical
feathers and development of the areas of the brain associated with flight in modern birds. Jurassic Skies features a reconstruction of what Archaeopteryx may have looked like. Mounted on a model Ginkgo tree and chasing a Protolindenia dragonfly, the reconstruction was specially made for Jurassic Skies by artist and model maker Tony Hitchcock. "I welcome this opportunity to share our exhibition on flying dinosaurs with the National Museum of Ireland,” David Anderson, Director General of National Museum Wales said. “It is a collaborative effort by teams from both museums and something we intend to develop further in terms of partnership." Chair of the Board of the National Museum of Ireland, Catherine Heaney, said: “Collaboration is a central theme of the National Museum of Ireland’s strategy. During a time, when Brexit could potentially put borders and barriers between Ireland and Wales, this initiative of a joint exhibition shows that cultural ties can continue to flourish, regardless.” Director of the National Museum of Ireland, Lynn Scarff said: “This exciting exhibition gives audiences an insight into flight and the ‘missing link’ between dinosaurs and birds. This is an opportunity to see how the Archaeopteryx looked and took flight. With the National Museum of Ireland now open seven days a week, it’s a terrific opportunity – over the next two months – to see a fascinating element of natural history come alive.”
Celebrating his massive €289,861 Lotto Match 5 + Bonus prize, the winning Kerry dad explained how his family were completely unaware of their huge Lotto win until they heard chat about it at Mass the following morning. “Obviously the Lotto was the talk of the town on Sunday morning but I was still none the wiser that I had the winning ticket in my pocket! It was only when I got to Mass and heard chatter about the big win and speculation about who the winner might be. As soon as I heard where the ticket was sold, I just knew it was me. I sat through the rest of Mass knowing that I’d be rushing straight home afterwards to check my ticket,” he grinned.
The delighted Kerry man, who wished to remain anonymous, purchased his winning Quick Pick ticket at Buckley’s Swift Service Station in Ballybunion on the day of the draw. After collecting his Lotto cheque for over €289,000, the Kerry father outlined his plans for the win which would put his family first and foremost. “It’s just a wonderful amount of money to win. We’ll be able to pay off the mortgage and a few other bills but we’ll be dividing it up among all of the children and other family members. We’ve also decided to put some money towards a once in a lifetime family holiday in the sun which we will never forget. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this win,” he said.
St Patrick’s Day parade will be ‘The Greatest Show’ ever The committee behind St Patrick’s Festival Cill Airne have been hard at work over the winter months preparing for this year’s festival. And Chairperson Paul Sherry has just announced this year’s theme for the parade. “This year we are celebrating ‘The Circus’ and all that it entails as the theme for our St Patrick’s Day Parade,” he said. “Killarney and Kerry have a long association with the circus and has welcomed many different circuses to the town over the years. “Our plans are to make this year’s parade ‘The Greatest Show’, we invite you to use your creative skills and imagination to interpret the theme with lots of colour, fun, and noise. This is a call to action for all participants, we want energy, creativity, imagination, humour, music and dance. Preparations are well underway so feel free
to contact us if you would like to get involved in the parade or the festival.” Paul put particular emphasis on the support received from local businesses and Kerry County Council. “We would like to thank all our sponsors for last year, their support is critical, especially Kerry County Council, without their co-operation and financial support the festival and parade could not happen. New sponsorship opportunities are evolving and we are happy to meet with any sponsors to discuss.” The festival is organised by a subcommittee of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, and together with the support of Kerry County Council and local volunteers, organises a full weekend of family friendly activities. Further details are to follow in the coming weeks. The festival can be contacted at stpatricksfestivalkillarney@gmail.com.

Last year’s inaugural event was so successful that plans are firmly in place for a return of the Killarney Mountain Festival.
CACI Ultimate Eye Treatment
For those who look in the mirror and think they are suffering with dark circles, lines and drooping eyes - then consider CACI Ultimate Eye Treatment as an effective treatment. We all have different lifestyles that can hinder our health. A hectic lifestyle can mean your diet suffers, or young children, work, stress and other issues can cause lack of sleep. These issues, plus many others can impact on how we look, and due to the delicate skin around the eyes, this can be a particular problem area. The CACI Ultimate Eye Treatment concentrates only on the eye area. It lifts, smooths and plumps whilst erasing those lines, dark circles and puffiness under the eyes. This treatment includes Crystal Free Orbital Microdermabrasion. This is a non-evasive skin resurfacing treatment. It works by gently removing the dead layer of skin with the use of an orbital rotation hand piece which significantly reduces skin imperfections such as pigmentation, age spots, wrinkles and
impurities. Your skin will be left feeling smooth and clear. Light therapy is also emitted from the device to enhance circulation, wound healing, speeds up cell renewal, stimulates collagen and also acts as a calming agent. It is a perfect facial treatment for dull, tired, dehydrated skin, and a great alterative to collagen injections. The Wrinkle Comb also included in this treatment is also non-evasive and has been designed to effectively reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Once the skin has been prepared, the Amino-Lift Peptide Complex is applied to the specific areas of concern. CACI’s Wrinkle Comb handset is then used to precisely exfoliate lines and wrinkles around the eye area, this also combines LED light therapy and Microcurrent, giving the area a brighter complexion.

From March 8 to 10, there’ll be plenty of mountain and adventure-related activities to do, say organisers, who are running their event in close association with the hugely successful and world-renowned Kendal Mountain Festival in the beautiful Lake District in the UK, of which Killarney is twinned. Killarney Mountain Festival is sure to inspire and invigorate visitors with its jam-packed programme of events, some of which are free, such as live musical entertainment across the weekend, including Friday and Saturday night, film screenings, family-fun activities, and well-known inspirational guest speakers. Venues for the various events taking place include Basecamp, the hub of the festival, located in a large festival tent just behind The Killarney Plaza Hotel, St Mary’s Church of the Sloes, The Killarney Plaza Hotel, Cinema Killarney, as well as pop up events in various venues, all located in Killarney Town Centre. “It’s clear that there’s huge excitement and anticipation ahead of the weekend,” Maureen Hegarty, Killarney Mountain Festival Committee Chair, said. “Having had such a fantastic festival weekend last March, we are really looking forward to this year’s festival. The programme features a line-up
of amazing guest speakers, some of the most renowned adventurers in the world, film screenings, family fun events, challenges including a 10-mile race on Sunday morning in association with Hardman Events, guided walks with KerryClimbing, and Quest Adventure Race for kids as well as live music entertainment by local band ‘The Rising’ on Friday night at Basecamp. This will be followed by a live session of American mountain themed songs by ‘The Constituents’, a brilliant band visiting us from Arlington, Virginia, and of course, to raise the roof off Basecamp on Saturday night, we’ll have ‘SuperCéilí’ join us for the ultimate night of Irish craic! We can’t wait to see Killarney locals and visitors alike celebrate the mountains of #IrelandsAdventureCapital and Irish culture with us in just over eight weeks’ time. There will be a wide programme of activities for everyone who joins us, and you will find us among our town centre venues and predominantly at Basecamp, the heart of the festival space.” Visitors will also have the opportunity to attend free talks by motivational speaker and writer Nikki Bradley, adventurer and long distance hiker Olive McGloin, mountaineer, explorer and adventurer Mike O’Shea, and British record-breaking adventurer, author, keynote speaker, and sustainability campaigner Adrian Hayes. FEATURE NEW TRENDS FOR 2019
W
elcome to the New Year edition of Home and Living. Where did the last year go - but we tend to say that every year, don't we? January is a great time for change. I like to use this month as a time to plan what I’d like to do for the next year - be that for myself or for my home. There is a feeling we should change everything - but ‘everything in moderation’ is a great saying. Sometimes sitting back, looking at what we have and being grateful for that, is good place to start. For this month’s issue I have been looking at trends for 2019 and my favorite has to be the black bathroom. I went to the dark side last year when I painted my boot room ‘Down Pipe’ by Farrow and Ball. It instantly created a warm, cozier feeling in this room - and has even made me a little braver. Having banished all the heritage colours years ago in favour of whites and pale greys, I was a little afraid of the dark! But it’s renewed my interest in the darker moodier colours - so a black bathroom will be on the cards! Have you planned any interior changes for 2019?

Pantone Colour of the Year
It's an annual event we anticipate every the Pantone Colour of the Year, forecasting a shade that they believe will set the tone (quite literally) for the year ahead. Last year gave us Ultra-Violet; in 2017, we enjoyed Greenery. This year's Pantone Colour of the Year? Living Coral, also known as Pantone 16-1546 is a warm, peachy orange with a life-affirming golden undertone. The colour evokes vitality and buoyancy; the marine invertebrate get its vibrant tone from the tiny algae living on its surface. There are, quite literally, endless colours to choose from. Why Living Coral? And how? In choosing the colour of the year, we look at everything around us. We look to see what people are doing in beauty, in fashion and in art; we look to see what people are wearing, buying, and posting about on social media. In a time when so many of us are increasingly immersed in digital experiences that can be cold and isolating, Living Coral felt like an appealing shade of connection. There's just something about the colour that feels earthbound and welcoming, optimistic and intimate. And those are the exact reasons Living Coral is so applicable in the home and design space. How do you expect to see people using Living Colour? You know some years we choose a colour and we see it more as an accent, especially in the home space. Something where just a little spot of colour will go so far. But even though coral is so bright and bold, it's really something we're seeing people embrace on a larger scale. It's the kind of colour you could paint a whole room. It would be great in an entryway or a bathroom. You could see someone with a great coral couch. It's a shade people want to live with, which is exactly why we chose it. Leatrice Eiseman, Director of the Pantone Colour Institute

TOP INTERIOR TRENDS FOR 2019 Oh, the joys of the New Year. January 1 has become our opportunity for a reboot. My mom's friend always says January is a preparation month and we shouldn't do anything too drastic, use it to ease yourselves gently into to the New Year, it's an opportunity to leave behind what's bad and embrace what's new and good. When you're deciding what to overhaul, don't forget about the home front. For decor lovers looking for tips on 2019 decorating, we looked at what some of the famous designers are predicting will be in and out for 2019.
2. BEDS
1. SUSTAINABILITY (LESS IS MORE) Being strategic and purposeful about purchasing behaviour is a key ingredient to a sustainable ethos. What type of materials are used to build each item? Timeless materials, which evoke emotion whenever you're in your space. 2. BOLD BLACK BATHROOMS The spa-inspired bathroom trend has officially returned–back to the spa, These days it's all about bold, dark, sultry bathroom designs that evoke an indulgent high-end experience.
9. CURVEY FURNITURE
3. OXIDISED OAK 2019 will bring more furniture and cabinetry that is a blackened version of our tried and true white oak. It will provide the comfort and grounding people are looking for in their spaces. Black pieces bring grounding to a scheme especially if you have a mainly white interior which can often look cold.
2. BOLD BLACK BATHROOMS
4. VELVET Velvet is still the fabric of choice for upholstery and cushions for 2019, adding rich colour and a more luxurious feel upholstering your headboard in jewel-toned velvet adds a touch of sophistication in the often subdued sanctuary of any bedroom. 9. CURVEY FURNITURE
5. ARTS AND CRAFTS
FEATURE
25.01.2019
5. ARTS AND CRAFTS A return to handcrafted authenticity, especially when it comes to furniture and decorative arts individual pieces will be much more popular in 2019. 6. BLUSH Move over millennial pink blush is on its way. Blush is the new neutral. It pairs with greys and naturals for a calming palette. It can be combined with bold colours like navy, forest green, or citrine, and it allows the bold colour to be the hero. 7. BEDS Beds are going to be more womb-like. There are so many things going on in the world, and we desire to feel nurtured and protected when we are sleeping and/or relaxing. Lots of upholstered headboards and footboards will be sheathed in comfortable textiles that feel like a warm hug. Four poster beds are all part of this, giving a cocoon feeling. 8. NATURAL MATERIALS Our fascination with natural materials and the visual texture they add to our interiors will continue. Natural stones, quartzite, wool, linen, merge luxury and practicality in a way that makes indulgence a little more palatable.
41
9. CURVEY FURNITURE Next year, embrace a curvy design aesthetic. 1970s-inspired rounded furniture will continue to take over. Rounded back chairs are a chic way to bring the curvy trend into your home, adding a slightly less rigid feel to our interiors and bringing in a more feminine aesthetic. 10. NOT SKIMPING ON COMFORT From soft carpets underfoot to a sofa so comfortable you'll want to lounge for hours. Spending the money to get these basic things right is very important - 'Buy once, cry once' 11. BIOPHILIA For 2019, there is greater interest in biophilia–emphasising the relationship between humankind and nature, and the connections between the two. Natural. Organic materials such as wood floors, stone, daylight and plant life remind us of the exterior, and it brings the outside and nature in which is very important.

WHAT'S OUT FOR 2019 SCANDINAVIAN MINIMALISM IS ON ITS WAY OUT The pendulum is swinging from crisp white, softly textural Scandinavian-inspired Hygge back to vivid, high-contrast patterns and big statement mixing of materials and scale. As the volume continues to turn up in the world around us, people will continue to become more daring with their interior choices. MID-CENTURY EVERYTHING "I love the look of mid-century furniture, but when a space outfitted entirely in this one look, it can sometimes feel like it’s in a time capsule. Don't throw everything out though mixing up your decor styles, makes a space look so much more interesting and layered. FIBER ART One trend I think may need to take a rest in 2019 is fiber art everywhere, especially in the bedroom. We have hit a saturation point, and are veering dangerously close to macramÊ owl overload of the 1970s.

Skoda Vision X SUV teased ahead of Geneva debut Skoda has begun teasing the production version of the Skoda Vision X ahead of its launch at the Geneva Motor Show this March. The single front-end image suggests the ‘real’ small SUV that will slot beneath the Karoq and Kodiaq in the Czech car-maker’s range will retain the concept’s split LED front lighting system and chrome toothy grille. What has changed from our first glimpse of the frontal styling is the production Vision X grows a pair of larger door mirrors. Based on the same MQB platform as the Volkswagen Polo, the Vision X is almost certain to share the small VW’s
petrol-only small turbocharged range of 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre TSI engines. The Vision X is expected to measure in at 4250mm long, 1500mm high and around 1800mm wide with a wheelbase of around 2645mm. That means it will be fractionally longer (+16mm) than its T-Roc clone with a more generous wheelbase (+55mm). Those traits will translate into class-leading levels of passenger and luggage space, with an emphasis on interior comfort. Inside, the Vision X is also set to raise the bar for all future Skoda interiors, featuring a new virtual cockpit dash and a large centrally located infotainment system.
It was a while ago now, of course, but there were three consecutive Monte Carlo wins in the late 1960s and the pair of Dakar wins in the ‘80s, plus numerous triumphs for private entrants in various Porsches over the years. Porsche teased a Cayman rally car at the end of last year. Following up on the latter, there is now this, the
official 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport R-GT car, spurred on by the positive response to the 2018 concept. Porsche expects the car to be ready for the 2020 season, which should hopefully spur more manufacturers to develop R-GT racers. Hopefully we will see one in action on the Rally of the Lakes in the near future.

New Renault Scénic Easy Life range announced
Latest Kadjar arrives in Donagh Hickey Motors
When Renault launched the 4th generation Scénic and Grand Scénic, it was clear that customers were demanding more from their family cars.
The new facelift Kadjar has arrived in Kerry and is now available at Donagh Hickey Motors, Rathmore, from €26,995.
With more and more people looking to SUVs, Scénic and Grand Scénic had to have stunning looks, as well as a level of practicality that beats SUV competitors hands down. The Scénic range, which includes the five-seater Scénic and seven-seater Grand Scénic, has been updated for 2019 with generous new trim levels and an exciting new range of WLTP compliant petrol and diesel engines available at Donagh Hickey Motors. A brand new 1.3 TCe 140 petrol engine develops a generous 240Nm of torque and is available with both a six-speed manual gearbox and a new seven-speed EDC gearbox priced from just €27,790. A brand new 1.7 dCi 120 diesel engine, which develops 300Nm of torque at just 1750 RPM, is available with both a six-speed manual gearbox and new seven-speed EDC on the Scénic and Grand Scénic, priced from €30,710. The Renault Scénic range also takes on
the new Easy Life trim levels, with three simplified trims of Play, Iconic and Signature available across the range. Play is a generously equipped entry-level trim compared to competitors, which comes complete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on its 7” touchscreen, as well as rear parking sensors and two rows of flat-folding seats in Grand Scénic providing extra space and flexibility – key for busy families. Iconic tops most competitors and adds more key comfort features such as keyless entry, front parking sensors and built-in navigation. The Signature trim, the pinnacle of the new Scénic range, adds features including rear parking cameras, MULTI-SENSE ambient lighting and driving modes and an 8.7” touchscreen. Grand Scénic is the only car at this level to provide built-in navigation, two rows of flat-folding seats and one-touch folding on all rear seats. An unmissable 191 offer is available at Donagh Hickey Motors on new Renault Scénic and Grand Scénic models ordered before January 31, with a complete package of 1.91 percent APR finance, €750 cashback and three years servicing.
Efficient new petrol and diesel engines are fitted across the range while New Kadjar’s equipment levels are more generous than ever – each version includes Climate Control, 7” touchscreen with Android Auto® and Apple CarPlay®, alloy wheels, parking sensors, and automatic lights and wipers. The exterior of new Kadjar is sleeker, and the body coloured area of the front and rear bumpers is now larger lending a more premium feel. The grille is wider, and the C-Shaped LED lights now incorporate the front indicator which gives a high tech and impressive look. There is a new control panel for the automatic air conditioning and other additions include bigger cup holders, bigger bins in the front doors and two rear USB sockets. The big news for new Kadjar is the addition of the new 1.3TCe 140 GPF engine, one of the finest petrol engines in the segment and this powertrain meets the highest standards in performance and drivability. On Kadjar, this engine is fitted
€21,000 + Vat €12,900 €12,500+Vat
with a gasoline particulate filter (GPF). The all-new 1.3 TCe petrol engine is available in two versions. The TCe 140, available with 6-speed manual or 7-speed EDC automatic gearbox options, is smooth and powerful while the manual-only TCe 160 offers the highest power output ever for a Kadjar. New Kadjar also features an upgraded 1.5 Blue dCi 115, more powerful than before but still the most economical engine in the line-up, and with AdBlue, cleaner than ever. For customers requiring economy and torque, but with more performance, the all-new 1.7 Blue dCi engine is now available with 150hp and comes in 4x2 and 4x4. Customers can avail of savings of over €4,000 on Kadjar at for 191 with a complete package of 1.91 percent APR PCP or HP finance, €1,000 cashback and three years servicing, available until January 31. New Kadjar needs to be driven to be experienced, and you can now book in for a 24-hour test drive at Donagh Hickey Motors, Rathmore, to experience Kadjar for yourself. www.donaghhickeymotors. com.

The very first A90 Toyota Supra sold for €1.85m What’s the retail on one of those? Well, considerably more than the actual retail. Ladies and gentlemen, the very, very first brandnew Toyota Supra – that’s the A90 one you might not have heard about – has just sold at auction. It was sold via Barrett-Jackson at the company’s auction at WestWorld of
Scottsdale. That full €1.85m sum will be donated to the American Heart Association and the Bob Woodruff Foundation. It gets a special VIN number too, if that sort of thing excites you, a VIN number ending in 20201. The car itself is finished in matt grey, with red mirror caps and matt black wheels. Inside there’s a red interior with carbon fibre inserts.

COMMUNITY NOTES Listry Social Committee Due to a lot of colds/flus going around and the long cold dark evenings the next Seniors social day is not been held until February 26, in Listry Community Centre.
Spa Muckross Community Games There was a great turn out on Tuesday night for our local Spa Muckross Art and Handwriting competition. Well done to all the boys and girls. A special thank you to all parents who supported this event. We had two teams playing in the basketball competitions over the weekend. Our U11 mixed team were unlucky in their first round game losing to St Brendans/Oakpark by one basket. They were beaten by Castleisland in their second game (the group winners) and in their third game they had a win over Miltown/Listry. Our U13 girls played on Sunday and had two very tough games to start and lost to both Kenmare and Castleisland. In their third game they took on Killorglin and when extra time couldn't separate the two teams it went to a nail-biting shoot-out to decide the winner. Very exciting finish to the day with our girls taking the win over Killorglin.
Kilcummin ORGANIC GARDENING AND HORTICULTURAL COURSE: 18 weeks commencing SULT NA NÓG: March 2/3. Entry forms for musicians and singers are available in the Rural Development Office and must be returned to Helen at the office by February 1. The age groups are U9, U11 and U13. Rules and guidelines are also available in Office. Valentine’s 5K promoted by Gneeveguilla Athletic Club in the Demesne Killarney on Saturday February 9, at 11.30am. Fee €10 or €5 for all students. Killarney Musical Society Thank you most sincerely to all that supported our table quiz last Friday night. We had a wonderful night, and
we appreciate your support as always. Thank you also to the Dromhall Hotel for their kindness and support. Rehearsals are going really well. Our Von Trapp family are amazing. To say we adults are in awe of them is slightly biased, but truly and honestly well-deserved. A great bunch of young stars and we are thrilled to have them on board the KMS family of 2019. I know it's only January but... it's less than a month now to opening night of our 34th production, ‘The Sound of Music’. Opening night is Tuesday February 26, until Thursday February 28 inclusive. For tickets or information please contact us on 087 9933411 or 087 1342314, or visit our website www. killarneymusicalsociety.ie.

Lonely is the home without you, Life to us is not the same; All the world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again. A light from our household gone, A voice we loved is still, A place is vacant in our home, That never can be filled.
Fondly remembered and forever in the thoughts and prayers of her parents Gerald and Peggy, brothers Billy, Gary, Patrick and Kevin, sisters Evelyn, Deirdre and Aoife and their families.
May the God of Love and Mercy, Care for our loved one who is gone, And bless with consolation, Those left to carry on.
Suaimhneas Siorraí da hanam dílis.
The happy hours we once enjoyed, How sweet their memory still, But death has left a vacant place, This world can never fill.

Sadly missed by your Brother & friend Sean.
Once while resting on the pier, A sudden ripple did appear, In our thoughts and in our hearts, Forever held so dear.
How dearly we loved you, And prayed you might live, But Jesus just beckoned, And we had to give. God gave us strength to bear it, And courage to fight the blow, What it has meant to lose you, God alone will ever know. Sadly missed and never forgotten by Tomas, Stephen and Ryan.
In loving memory of Charlie Kidney, Late of 2 Muckross Grove, Killarney, Who passed away on 25th January 2007. At last his gallant soul took flight, Into the land where there is not night, But his name carved in our hearts to stay, As we think of the things he used to say, So he did not die he is only gone, Into a brighter more beautiful dawn, For men like him were not born to die, But like the sun that shines in the sky, They warm the earth, and the hearts of men, And in happy remembrance, They live again, So while he sleeps and his voice is still, His spirit goes on and it always will. In loving memory from Anna, Charles, Jackie, Fay & Mark. xxxx

Leave my body wherever it may lie, But remember my soul, at the alter of the Lord, The twenty first of January, Two thousand and eight, A date in our memories, We’ll never forget A son, a brother, a true friend. You fought so bravely to the very end, Though it was in Cork, that you passed away, A Kerry man to the bone until your dying day. When we’re feeling down or a little bit blue, We’ll just close our eyes and think of you We’ll hear you in each wind that blows, Or in the fall of each December snow, A true gentleman you made no fuss, It was Johnny time, no need to rush, Now he’s playing with angels, in heaven up above, We’ll keep our special memories, And treasure them with love, The month’s stretch on before us, So bleak and so long, We pray you’ll walk beside us, Help to keep us strong, And when our life is over, Come to us that day, Come smiling towards us , and carry us away, And now the time has come, to say our last goodbye, But we’ll always remember you, the apple of our eye, We’ll go the rest of our lives, and never again will see, A beautiful gentleman, our one and only Johnny. Sadly Missed by the Friends of Johnny.

Ready for battle? Keane’s first 100 days have been eventful but now the real challenge begins | By Adam Moynihan
Kerry may not have kicked a ball in anger in months but I doubt Peter Keane has had much downtime since taking over from Eamonn Fitzmaurice in October. Assembling a new team is always fraught with challenges but Keane’s job has been made doubly difficult by an exodus of some of Kerry’s most senior players at the end of last season. Considering the manner in which Kerry exited the Super 8s in 2018, expectations should be relatively low for the coming campaign but, as we all know, that’s not how it works around here. Keane, like every Kerry bainisteoir before him, will be under pressure to get results straight away, regardless of the players he has at his disposal. So how has the Cahersiveen native fared in his first 100 days in office?
A SHAKY START The former minor manager barely had his feet under his desk when the first controversy of his regime came to light. Keane compiled a list of approximately 40 players, all of whom were informed by management that they were to be part of an extended Kerry panel for
pre-season training ahead of the 2019 campaign. However, several players who were in with Kerry in 2018 but evidently not in Keane’s plans were not informed of their omission. This left established squad members like Barry John Keane and Fionn Fitzgerald out in the cold with no idea if they were in or out. You had a situation where senior Kerry players had to ask around to find out if a squad had even been named. That’s an embarrassing position for anyone to find themselves in and you would have thought that their many years of service merited a kinder farewell than that. The issue was raised at the time by Kerins O’Rahilly’s at a County Board meeting and Kerry GAA Chairman Tim Murphy said things would be done differently in the future. But at a recent press conference the Kerry manager doubled down on his decision to not
contact outgoing squad members, insisting that, “they hadn’t been my players”. That doesn’t really cut it as far as I’m concerned. How long would it have taken to look at last year’s panel, put an ‘x’ next to the relevant names and make a couple of calls? Or at least send a text? Fitzgerald and BJ Keane were popular characters in the dressing room and I doubt the incident went down too well with their teammates, not to mention their clubmates who did end up making the 40 (eight at last count – five Crokes and three Rahilly’s).
THE FAMOUS 40 Rumours of a radical overhaul were rife in the opening weeks of Keane’s reign. As many as 20 of Fitzmaurice’s 40 had been cut instantly, if reports were to be believed. Every Kerryman who kicked a size 5 O’Neill’s in 2018 was “in there” at some point in that first fortnight or so as speculation spread like wildfire through WhatsApp groups the length and breadth of the county. As it turned out, a lot of it was pub talk although by my count there are actually 15 new faces in the current extended panel (that’s if the re-called Jonathan Lyne, Jack Sherwood and Tommy

Walsh can be classified as “new”.) Kerry’s full back line struggled at times in 2018 but Keane appears to have added just one player in this department, although a number of half backs are also capable of filling in if necessary. At the other end, one notable omission is Tony Brosnan, the sharp-shooting corner forward who lit up the Kerry SFC with Dr Crokes in 2018. Brosnan earned plaudits from the national media on the back of some remarkable performances in the championship and he had been widely tipped to make the Kerry senior squad for 2019. It is my understanding that Keane initially included the Killarney man in his panel of 40 but he must have subsequently changed his mind as Brosnan is no longer involved.
THE CROKES CONTINGENT Even if Brosnan did make the cut, opportunities to force his way into the team would have been limited. Dr Crokes are currently preparing for an All-Ireland Club Championship semi-final on February 16 so none of their players are available to Peter Keane for the upcoming National League games
SPORT
25.01.2019 against Tyrone, Cavan and Dublin. If Crokes beat Mullnalaghta they will have another All-Ireland final on March 17, which will probably rule all of their players out of Kerry’s league campaign entirely. Keane is unlikely to hand any player their debut in the championship so newcomers David Shaw and Michael Potts might have to wait until next year to make their breakthrough, while Crokes’ run could also potentially hurt the chances of Shane Murphy and Micheál Burns, neither of whom could currently be classed as “guaranteed starters” in Kerry colours – especially with a new manager at the helm. You would expect All-Star-nominated defender Gavin White to slot into the team regardless. Being without five of his 40 (six including Kevin McCarthy of Kilcummin) due to club commitments at this time of year is far from ideal for Keane but if anything it highlights how flawed the current GAA schedule is.
ASSAULT CHARGES Keane faced another difficult question last week when he was asked if the ongoing garda probe into an alleged vicious assault involving three prominent footballers, all of whom have played for Kerry at various grades in the past, would impact him as Kerry manager. In an uncomfortable exchange with Irish Examiner Sports Editor Tony Leen, Keane responded by asking, “why should it?” before claiming that he didn’t know who the players in question are. When pressed on the issue, the Kerry manager reiterated his position, adding that he didn’t see any names in the paper – “unless you know more than me”. Leen confirmed that he knows who the players are (as does everyone else with so much as a passing interest in Kerry football) but Keane remained steadfast, insisting that he doesn’t know the identity of the three men allegedly under investigation. In Keane’s defence, you can understand him not wanting to speak on the matter and he really has no obligation to speak about it seeing as how the footballers in question aren’t part of his panel. It certainly isn’t something he wants to be dealing with as he prepares his team for their league opener this weekend. He has enough to worry about in that regard. It has been an eventful first 100 days for the new manager but now the real challenge begins. Kerry seem a long way away from the mountain top at the moment but as the saying goes, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Understrength Kerry could struggle against Tyrone NATIONAL LEAGUE DIV 1
_______________________________________________________________________
Kerry v Tyrone Sunday at 2pm Fitzgerald Stadium
| By Adam Moynihan Kerry face Tyrone in the Park on Sunday and it’s very difficult to make any bold predictions about how they’ll line out. A number of guys are out due to injuries and Sigerson commitments and with a new manager and a number of new players on board, any kind of team could take to the field the next day. Put it this way: there are very few players who could be described as certs just yet.
Brian Kelly and Shane Ryan are both likely to see game time over the course of the next few weeks and word on the street is that Keane will run the rule over the Rathmore man this weekend. Ryan operates at full forward at club level (to great effect) so don’t be surprised if he also gets a look in at 14 at some stage of the season. The tall target man is an excellent kicker once he gets the ball into his hands and he might be able to offer Kerry something a bit different in attack. In the full back line, Peter Crowley, Jason Foley and Mark Griffin are all reportedly struggling with injuries so experienced corner back Shane Enright might be called into action. Versatile Firies man Jack Sherwood, who can also operate at half back, midfield and half forward, has been tried out at full

back in challenge matches so he may start there on Sunday. The half back line looks fairly strong with the reliable Paul Murphy and Kerry SFC Player of the Year Tom O’Sullivan expected to start. There are a number of viable options for the remaining spot, perhaps most notably All-Ireland winner Killian Young who could add much-needed know-how to Keane’s fledgling Kerry team. Kerry are looking light at midfield at the moment with their most qualified candidate, David Moran, not expected home from his honeymoon until this weekend. Jack Barry will probably get the nod, possibly alongside his clubmate and two-year minor Diarmuid O’Connor. Templenoe’s Adrian Spillane and Rathmore youngster Shane Ryan are also in contention. Kenmare duo Seán O’Shea and Stephen O’Brien are the most obvious choices at 11 and 12 while re-called Legion man Jonathan Lyne could provide much-needed pace and intensity in the absence of Micheál Burns and Kevin McCarthy. Dara Moynihan of Spa is another interesting option at 10 and he served Keane well as a Kerry minor in 2016. All-Star calibre forwards Paul Geaney and James O’Donoghue should start in the full forward line and with Young Player of the Year David Clifford recovering from a shoulder injury, could we potentially see the long awaited return of fan favourite Tommy Walsh? The Strand Road man mountain is back in the fold and if his form at club level is anything to go by, he could be a real weapon for Kerry in 2019. All in all it is bound to be an understrength team and Peter Keane’s men could find it difficult against Tyrone, who would no doubt love to get one over on the Kingdom in Killarney.
ents think Peter Keane’s men will lift the trophy at the end of March, with 13.3% predicting that Kerry will be defeated in the final. The Kingdom finished 5th in 2018 and 27.7% believe a similar fate awaits their team this time out, while onethird of those who voted think that Kerry will improve and finish either third or fourth.

Noel Duggan also scored three (two of these from frees), Kieran Murphy capped a great midfield display by adding two points, and then there was Seán O’Leary. The former All-Ireland minor-winner and now a valuable member of the Kerry U20 team was a class apart. He did his primary job of defence at corner back so well yet he had the stamina to travel the length of the field, turning defence in to attack. He is so composed as he carries the ball upfield. Kilcummin will now face Naomh Éanna of Antrim in the Croke Park decider on February 9. One man who must be justifiably proud of the success is Kilcummin native Seán Kelly MEP who introduced these two competitions when he was President of the GAA. He also made sure that the finals would be played in Croke Park.

Kilcummin and Beaufort have booked their places in the Intermediate and Junior All-Ireland Club Championship finals after hard-fought wins on Sunday. In Limerick, Philip Casey scored the match-winner for Kilcummin in the 62nd minute to claim a well-deserved victory over Two Mile House (0-11 to 0-10). What is remarkable in the Kilcummin victory is that they were reduced to 14 men in the 39th minute when Kevin O’ Gorman was sent off for a second yellow. Peter Kelly from the loser’s team got a black card in the 8th minute but they were able to send in a sub for him. Not so Kilcummin, who were very nervous in the opening minutes as Two Mile House dictated play. Chris Healy, listed at number 6 but playing at wing forward, was a real thorn on their side throughout. He scored two points and contributed a lot in general play.
SETTLED Kilcummin played against the breeze in the first half and were three points down in the opening 10 minutes before Gary O’Leary got Kilcummin’s
first score. That settled the Kerrymen, who had points from Matt Keane, Gary O’Leary and Noel Duggan to edge them ahead six points to four. Kilcummin made it 7-5 in the 26th minute when Noel Duggan tried for a goal but he was fouled. Matt Keane sent over the resultant free to leave two points between them as half-time approached. Seán O’Leary made one of several long bursts from his corner back position but he shot poorly, missing out on a chance of a goal after one of these runs.
REFEREE The main topic at half time was the performance of referee Barry Judge from Sligo, who is an inter-county ref. I rarely blame a referee but I certainly do in this case, not for the two players he sent off but for his interpretation of the rules. He got so many calls wrong that it was frustrating for the players, management and the spectators. He left so much tackling outside the rules go unpunished and in too many cases
he gave the free against the player who was hounded by the opposition. An outstanding display by Kilcummin midfielder Kieran Murphy laid the basis for victory in that second half when they were down to 14 men. He fielded some superb balls and added a great point in the 43rd minute to edge his team ahead once more, 9- 8. That was the all important point which kept them in front, but they had to dig very deep to maintain supremacy. Willie Maher brought on several subs to freshen up a tiring team and the biggest cheer of all went up in the 59th minute when they introduced their Kerry player Kevin McCarthy, who could not start as he is still in recovery with a broken bone in his arm. It was a timely boost for his fellow players as the referee played the game on until the 67th minute to make up for all the stoppages. Kilcummin can count
BEAUFORT Meanwhile in the Junor Club Championship, Beaufort had to come from behind to edge out Dundalk Young Irelands by two points in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise (0-12 to 0-10). Beaufort are the 11th Kerry team to make it to the final since 2002. Their chief scorer was Fergal Hallissey who scored five points from frees and one point from play. Beaufort will play Easkey of Sligo in the junior final, which will also take place on February 9 in Croker.
KERRY The date of the finals means there is an unfortunate clash with Kerry v Dublin in Round 3 of the National League under lights in Tralee. Kerry open their senior account at home to Tyrone in Killarney on Sunday and they are then away to Cavan. When I met Kerry boss Peter Keane recently, he said they have three games in 13 days and will be without Jason Foley, David Moran and the Kerry players in the various Sigerson competitions. There are 13 Kerry players in the Sigerson panels and three of them will be missing on Sunday. He will also be without the Dr Crokes players so it remains to be seen what team Kerry he will put out. It will certainly be a tough opening three games.

Celts hammer rivals to go 11 points clear PREMIER A __________________________________________________________________________
Killarney Celtic

| By Adam Moynihan ::: Celtic Park
Killarney Celtic moved 11 points clear at the top of the Premier A on Sunday with an easy 5-0 win over fierce rivals Killarney Athletic. A brace from striker Cathal O’Shea as well as strikes from Stevie O’Mahony, Danny Roche and Conor McCarthy helped the defending champions to a comfortable victory as Athletic struggled to match their opponents’ intensity in what was a terribly one-sided and ultimately disappointing derby.
The defeat leaves the Blues with a mountain to climb if they’re to reach the league final: they are currently joint second with Castleisland but Castleisland have two games in hand. Celtic, meanwhile, are flying high at the summit and with just five games to play, they already have one foot firmly in the

final. Athletic started quite well and could have taken the lead when a defensive error left striker Will Courtney one-onone with the keeper. Unfortunately for the visitors, Courtney struck his effort low and central and Celtic keeper Roy Kelliher made light work of the save. The Hoops took the lead midway through the first half when Stevie O’Mahony came forward from defence to strike a powerful free kick into the top corner of the net. Celtic were on top thereafter but the killer goal came in stoppage time at the end of the period when Cathal O’Shea got in behind and finished neatly to double his side’s advantage. In truth, the Blues rarely threatened in the second and a couple of quickfire
25.01.2019 goals from Danny Roche and Cathal O’Shea made it 4-0 with over 30 minutes to play. Conor McCarthy sealed the victory from long range when he capitalised on a poor clearance to lob the Athletic keeper from all of 45 yards. The ball couldn’t have fallen to a better fella from a Celtic perspective: McCarthy is known for his long-range passing and shooting and he made a very difficult attempt look easy. It was certainly a day to forget for Athletic who will need to regroup quickly ahead of a home game against Dingle Bay Rovers on Sunday. Celtic played Cork City in a friendly last night and they will complete a busy week by hosting Ballynanty Rovers in Round 4 of the Munster Junior Cup. That tie will take place on Sunday at 2pm.

| By Adam Moynihan The Scotts Lakers remain on course for a place in the Southern Conference final after another comprehensive league victory, this time over the Ulster University Elks in Belfast. American guard Seán O’Brien contributed 37 points as the Killarney side broke the 100-point barrier for the third time this season, eventually running out 109 to 75 winners against an Elks team who currently find themselves sixth in the Northern Conference.
O’Brien: We’re a confident team right now and once we get into the playoffs, anything can happen. Speaking after the game, O’Brien said the team’s performance was one of the best of the season so far. “We jumped on them early,” he said. “Mason hit three threes and we went up 15-2 in the first couple of minutes. We built momentum and it was kind of

tough for them to recover after that. We played really well as a team. “Shooting-wise it was one of my better games for sure, but everyone contributed. It was good to travel that far and get a solid team win.” The dominant victory leaves the Scotts Lakers in second place in the south with an impressive 15-3 record. There was a potentially significant upset elsewhere as league leaders Ballincollig fell to a surprise 80-74 defeat to the Sligo All-Stars. Ballincollig remain on top with a 16-2 record and results between the teams earlier in the season (Balincollig beat the Lakers twice) mean that they would have to lose another two games with the Lakers winning their six remaining games for there to be a change at the top. “We’re just focussed on winning our matches and if they (Ballincollig) lose

MD O’Shea’s aiming for first All-Ireland final Mackey’s claimed Munster glory in impressive fashion just before Christmas and now their sights are firmly set on advancing to the All-Ireland Inter-Firms final for the first time in the company’s history. ALL-IRELAND INTER-FIRMS SEMI-FINAL

MD O’Shea’s v Ardboe Coldstore (Tyrone) Saturday at 5pm Lewis Road
| By Adam Moynihan MD O’Shea’s host Ulster champions Ardboe Coldstore at Lewis Road on Saturday and a keenly contested north versus south encounter is on the cards. Mackey’s put Boston Scientific of Tipperary to the sword in the provincial decider with highly-rated senior footballers Chris Brady (Dr Crokes) and Jeff O’Donoghue (Glenflesk) registering 2-2 each. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s game O’Donoghue said he is anticipating a difficult match against Tyrone opposition, although the nature of the competition means that he and his teammates know very little about their semi-final opponents. “We don’t know much about them only that they’re from Tyrone, and you’re always going to get a tough game against
a Tyrone team,” he said. “It’s a huge game for us. Some of the guys on our team don’t even play football (for a club) so they’re really looking forward to the occasion. “It’s our first year ever playing in this tournament and we have a clean sweep so far so we’re delighted. People are over the moon inside here. It’s a lot easier to get up for work when you’re thinking about possibly playing in an All-Ireland final!” MD O’Shea’s will be hoping to for a healthy home crowd at Lewis Road on Saturday evening and with Tyrone playing Kerry in Killarney on Sunday, Ardboe Coldstore are expected to have a large following as well. It promises to be a great occasion as Mackey’s aim to move one step closer to All-Ireland glory.

Killarney girls line out at packed Thomond Park Last Saturday was a day to remember for the Killarney RFC U12 girls team as they took to the field at half-time in the Munster v Exeter game at Thomond Park.
The crucial Heineken Cup clash was played before a full house at the famous Limerick venue and the girls did their club and Killarney proud with a fine display of rugby during the interval. Their opponents Clonakilty RFC ran in the first
score of the game but Killarney levelled things up when some excellent team play led to Ella Guerin-Crowley breaking through for a historic Killarney try. Coach Jenna Moynihan said it was a “huge honour” to be asked to play at Thomond. “The girls were treated very professionally,” she said. “The highlight for me was when Dougie Howlett came out to shake hands with the captains and wish the girls well.” tT he Killarney U12 girls team outside Thomond Park with their coaches Jenna Moynihan and Peter O'Shaughnessy.
Fellow coach Peter O’Shaughnessy added that “all the skills of the game were on show”. “They put on a tremendous display of fast and accurate passing, hard tackling and competitive rucking,” he said. “It was great to see the smiles on the girls’ faces when they left the field to the appreciation of the large crowd.”
