With that in mind the Killarney Adver tiser was invited by Daly’s SuperValu on Park Road to take part in a weekly shop ping challenge that promised massive savings across a wide range of everyday products.

Our roving reporter Sean Moriarty was sent to the well-known supermarket with a shopping list in hand.

He was joined on the expedition by staff member Margaret Cahill.

As Sean wheeled his shopping trolley around he picked everyday items that he would buy anyway.

Breakfast cereals, fruit, a few packets of biscuits to satisfy his sweet tooth, daily lunch material like bread, cheese, butter and sliced ham were included in his store dash.

However, he was obliged to buy brand ed goods only. A box of Corn Flakes had to carry the trademarked Kellogg’s signature, cream crackers came from Jacobs, the meat from Denny’s and ba nanas from Fyffes.

Margaret shadowed him the whole way around and for every branded item he chose she put a sample of SuperValu’s own-branded products into her trolley. Both trolleys were put through the checkout and the price difference was simply huge!

Examples included SuperValu’s own Corn Flakes sold for €1.05 - but the branded product cost €2.59.

Staying with breakfast foods, a 24-pack of Weetabix sold for €4.39 but the own brand variety cost significantly less at €1.05.

One litre of chilled SuperValu orange juice was €1.59 as opposed to Tropical Smooth which will set you back €3.19.

How to save over 60% on a weekly shop with Dalys SuperValu

No weekly shop could be without a bag of spuds. Now, we accept that potatoes are not made in food processing facto ries like Weetabix, ultimately they come a field somewhere in Ireland.

A small bag of roasters was between €2.50 and €3.49, or a standard can of peas… €1.55 if you want the Bachelor va riety, exactly €0.90 less for SuperValu’s own.

A half-dozen box of free range eggs var ied in price between €2.86 for branded and €2.25 for SuperValu's own brand.

A pot of breakfast marmalade is €2.50 cheaper when compared to one of the main leading brands. Strawberry jam…€3.05 or €0.79.

Even a simple thing like a one-kilo bag of sugar is all of €0.04 cheaper depending on the label.

Knorr Soup is about €1 dearer for a box of three sachets.

Even meat products such cooked ham suitable for the daily sandwiches came in considerably cheaper with a packet €2.25 cheaper with the plain wrapper as opposed to the branded product. A small pack of Clonakilty sausages cost €2.30 but the store's own brand comes in at €1.19.

And it is not just food where savings can be made.

Fairy Liquid is €4 while SuperValu’s equivalent is only €0.76 and you can save up to €1.80 on kitchen rolls.

By the time Sean and Margaret had fin ished, Sean was facing a bill of €111.73 while Margaret’s total came to €50.19. When her €10 off every €50 voucher (free when you download the SuperVa

lu Real Rewards App) the self-branded trolley cost only €40.19. To be fair the voucher could have been applied to the dearer trolley too but €40 for a week or more’s grub is a very good result.

“Now more than ever, people have to

watch their spend,” Daly's SuperValu Duty Manager Denis Tucker told the Killarney Advertiser.

“We can see from this shop that there is massive savings to be made. The quali ty of our own brand is excellent, so not only are savings being made but you are keeping the quality too. This is just one weekly shop, add it over the year and there are potential savings of up to €3,000.”

€20m transformation for Pretty Polly site

Killarney to get first ever third level educational facility

The former Pretty Polly site, which has been derelict for years, is to be trans formed into a major state-of-the-art ed ucational facility.

On Monday morning, Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB) received approval to proceed to the next stage in developing a College of The Future (COTF) in Killarney.

The project proposed involves overhaul ing an existing factory site, including the existing on-site buildings and transform ing it into a state-of-the-art campus.

The intention is to transform the existing site it into a state-of-the-art campus to develop a Centre of Excellence in Hos pitality Training, a Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Green Technologies and a Regional Cen tre of Excellence for Lifelong Learning. The Killarney Campus, which is expect ed to cost in the region of €20m to com plete, will deliver training to 3,573 in the first year, 3,591 in year two and 3,609 in year three.

In addition, Simon Harris, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science of Ireland, has confirmed Munster Technological Uni versity (MTU) has been given the go ahead to proceed to the next phase for

Plans announced this week that the Kerry Education and Training Board will take over the vacant Pretty Polly site and convert it into a third level education centre were first re vealed by the Killarney Adver tiser in May last year.

Killarney Municipal District officials and senior ETB managers examined the for mer factory on Friday, May 7, 2021 to assess its suitability as a campus.

the Kerry Campus Learner Centre under the Technological Sector Strategic Pro jects (TSSPF) Fund.

“These are two significant develop ments furthering the development of education in County Kerry," Education Minister Norma Foley said.

"I want to thank my Cabinet colleague Minister Harris who has engaged with me in securing these projects and also acknowledge the vision and input of both Kerry ETB and the MTU. By ad vancing these ambitious projects we will ensure that the technological and further education and training sectors in Kerry have access to state-of-the-art facilities that will drive economic growth and social development, expand digital teaching and learning facilities and cre ate and expand key centres of excel lence.”

Kerry TD Brendan Griffin, who brought Minister Harris on-site there last March 10 and organised a meeting between him and Kerry ETB and Killarney hotel iers in the Dromhall, also welcomed the positive news.

The CEO of Kerry ETB, Colm McEvoy said that the announcement is "wel come" following the assessment of our Strategic Assessment Report for this

proposal.

"Kerry ETB is delighted to get approv al to proceed to the next phase in this process and develop a formal business case," he said.

“We are determined to bring this project to reality and work will commence im mediately on developing the business case. When completed this new campus in Killarney, which is fully aligned with the organisations commitment to sup

porting life-long learning, will provide a regional and national FET campus of excellence that will benefit thousands of learners and support local, regional and national development.

"I wish to thank the Department for Fur ther and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and SOLAS for their continued support of our vision for the future of further education and training across County Kerry.”

Local political groundwork

The visit came about after local coun cillors Marie Moloney and Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan used their influence as polit ical members of the ETB’s board of man agement. Maura Healy-Rae also played a huge role in securing that first visit. Earlier in 2021, a Killarney Municipal Dis trict meeting was told that all interested parties had withdrawn from a tender process regarding the takeover of the

former factory. Moloney, Healy-Rae and O’Callaghan were aware that the ETB was actively looking for a site or a building for a dedicated Killarney campus and that sparked the first interest in the former factory. Once the project became viable it was taken over by the senior Depart ment of Education and Department of Further and Higher Education. “During all my time in politics, I feel I have

really done something to benefit the whole community,” Moloney told the Kil larney Advertiser.

“Our job is to help the people of Killarney and what better benefit is this?”

PROJECT

The project proposal involves the repur posing of the existing buildings of the former Sara Lee and Pretty Polly factories in Killarney. The site is approximately

One Killarney man's 25-year Pretty Polly mission

Jerry O’Grady, former director of Pretty Polly in Killarney and a member of the board of trustees, has welcomed Kerry ETB’s deci sion to develop the site into a third level education building.

He was there when the factory closed in 1996 and returned when Pretty Polly’s parent company tried to make a second go of it.

He oversaw the sale of the site to Kil larney Town Council under the strict caveat that the premises would be used “For the purposes of benefiting the gen

eral community of Killarney and its sur rounding area”.

O'Grady was part of a three man group of trustees that also included the UK based Group Financial Controller Sam Sturgis and fellow former Pretty Polly Director, the late Tom O’Donohoe. This week’s news is a very welcome de velopment, he explained.

“There were a number of false dawns and disappointments while the fabric of the building and its facilities rapidly de teriorated,” he said.

“But all’s well that ends well and we are

greatly heartened by Minister Harris’s announcement of the planned transfor mation of the Pretty Polly property into a Kerry ETB third level National Centre of Excellence for the hospitality and re lated sustainable energy industries," he said.

“Great credit is due to all involved in the Kerry Education and Training Board and the Local Authorities in arriving at this exciting and progressive plan. It is most appropriate that Ireland’s tourism capital should become the home for the industry’s future sustainable develop ment.

"How gratifying to see that the long-run ning Pretty Polly property saga is finally coming to what appears to be a most welcome and very satisfactory conclu sion."

Former Pretty Polly / Sara Lee Plant to be Transformed

“Last March, I brought my Fine Gael colleague in Government, Simon Harris TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, to Killarney to view the former Pretty Polly / Sara Lee plant and site. I also organised a number of meetings on the day with key tourism and hospitality stakeholders and representatives of Kerry Education and Training Board.

I was therefore delighted to invite Minister Harris back to Killarney this week to announce that the site has now been selected to become a state-of-the-art further education college campus and centre of excellence for hospitality, tourism and green skills.

I am glad to have helped drive this project and will continue to work to ensure its completion. This will result in Government investment of tens of millions of euro in Killarney, transforming a derelict site into a thriving centre of education that will supply local industry with highly skilled people to fill valuable jobs for generations to come.”

Concert choir to celebrate Christmas in cathedral

A Killarney-based choir, that was only founded in February of this year, is preparing for its first Christ mas concert.

The Kerry Concert Choir will host 'Carols from the Cathedral' at St Mary’s Cathe dral, on December 4.

Founded by renowned Soprano Dr Sharon Lyons, Kerry Concert Choir has been rehearsing for this big occasion for months.

Yvonne’s star will shine brightly in town

She lit up Killarney through her boundless energy and her great sense of enthusiasm when rising to any challenge - so it is appro priate that the late Yvonne Quill will again shine brightly over her beloved hometown this Christmas.

The feature star at the top of the spec tacular Tree of Light, on the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral, will take on an extra special meaning during the festive sea son as it will be dedicated to the memory of the remarkable Tidy Towns champion who passed away on September 30.

A very successful businesswoman and master baker, Yvonne was the driving force behind the Killarney Looking Good project and the Killarney Tidy Towns Committee, leading by example at vol untary clean-ups and flower planting initiatives.

Killarney got serious about its commit ment to the national Tidy Towns com petition when Yvonne took over and her greatest achievement was inspiring the town to the prestigious overall title of Ire land’s Tidiest Town in 2011, the same year that it topped the Irish Business Against Litter League.

Since then, Killarney has constantly fea tured among the top contenders, win ning several gold medals and other acco lades in the years since she brought home that landmark top prize.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Com merce President and voluntary chairman of the Christmas in Killarney Festival, Niall Kelleher, said “Yvonne was a wonderful ambassador for Killarney".

"She worked with such dedication and with a real sense of purpose and she

encouraged those around her to do like wise,” he said.

“She led by example and she never asked anyone to do something she wouldn’t do herself. Dedicating the star at the top of the tree to this great woman’s memory is our small way of remembering such a very special person."

Yvonne was honoured with the title of grand marshal at the 2019 St Patrick’s Day parade in Killarney and, in her role as a community stalwart, she was also invit ed to meet the then Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall when they visited Killarney the previous year.

Yvonne, from Barleymount, passed peacefully after a great life and a short illness and she is survived by her hus band, John, children Peter, Sandra and Sean, son-in-law Peter, daughter-in-law Mairéad, grandchildren Anna, Jake, Ted, Abby and Luke, sister Angela and many other relatives and friends.

Her family will join the Mayor, and Kil larney Parish Administrator Fr Kieran O’Brien, at a special switching-on cere mony immediately after 6.15pm Mass on Thursday, December 1.

Over 4,500 twinkling bulbs will adorn the magnificent 100ft Californian Red wood this year but the collective eye of the public will constantly be drawn to the sparkling feature at the top – Yvonne’s star.

Directed by Lyons, the choir will perform some of most loved seasonal songs like 'O Holy Night', 'In the Bleak Mid-Winter',

'Carol of the Bells', 'Hark! The Herald An gels Sing'.

“The concert includes some of the world’s most beautiful traditional Christ mas carols,” Sharon, who has a Masters’ degree in Early Music and Chant, and a PhD from the Irish World Academy, said.

The concert will also feature the Kerry Scotia Ensemble - a 10 piece orchestra, members of St Mary's Cathedral Choir and special guest, Countertenor, Nils Wanderer.

The event will raise funds for Down Syndrome Kerry and tickets, which cost €20 plus booking fee, are available from eventbrite.ie by searching 'Kerry Concert Choir'.

Rescue highlights need for a permanent base

to be built near Ross Castle.

Businessmen to receive Killarney's highest honour

Two very prominent and successful businessmen are to be honoured in Killarney with the prestigious Order of Innisfallen Award.

Donal ‘Dux’ O’Donoghue and local para medic Eugene Tangney were involved in a dramatic lake rescue on Lough Leane after two male kayakers were over turned in bad weather.

The kayakers were able to get to Lamb Island and raise the alarm while clinging to plants.

The volunteer Killarney Water Rescue service launched their rescue boat from Dundag near Muckross, nearly 8kms from Lamb Island.

Their boat is currently stored at a private house and once they get a call they must navigate the notorious Killarney traffic before they can launch their boat. ‘Dux’ received a call from paramedic Tangney.

"He knew I would be near Ross Castle

and would be much closer to the inci dent,” Dux told the Killarney Advertiser.

‘Dux’ and Tangney got to the scene of the accident around 15 minutes before Killarney Water Rescue.

The time difference highlighted the challenges the volunteers face and the situation could have been much worse if the accident occurred during the peak summer season and the volunteers were delayed getting to their launch slip in the notorious tourist-season traffic gridlock.

“There is plenty of land down near Ross Castle to build a slip, or better again, a small shed where the rescue boat could be kept,” ‘Dux’ added.

“It would be very important to the town of Killarney to make this happen, the current situation is like having a fire sta tion for Killarney in Farranfore.”

The award is in recognition of the enor mous contribution they and their fam ilies have made to the economic and social fabric of the community.

Brothers-in-law Donal Ring and Michael O’Donoghue will be honoured at a cer emony to be held in Muckross House, Killarney on Wednesday, December 14 at 4pm.

The Order of Inisfallen is the highest honour Killarney can bestow and the awards scheme is administered by Killar ney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Kerry County Council.

Entrepreneur Donal Ring is the founder of Munster Joinery and the O'Donoghue Ring Collection. He and his brother, Patrick, established Munster Joinery in 1973 with a small operation at their fam ily home in Ballydesmond, on the Ker ry-Cork border.

The company has grown to become one of the largest manufacturers of windows and doors in Europe and next year Mun ster Joinery will celebrate a landmark 50 years in business.

The family-run company employs 1,800 people with a further 900 on the payroll in the UK.

In 1978, Donal and his wife, Noreen, purchased a property then known as the East Avenue Hotel – now the 66-bed room Killarney Avenue Hotel.

Noreen’s brother, Michael O’Donoghue, joined his sister and brother-in-law in the hospitality business and became one of its most successful and respected oper ators for over 40 years.

In 1986 Michael launched Revelles night club in the East Avenue and attracted many top acts, from Johnny Logan to Sinitta.

The company expanded in 1989 with the purchase of the former Imperial Ho tel which is now known as the Killarney Towers Hotel with 182 bedrooms.

Also in 1989, Michael developed a huge ly successful business in his birthplace of Castleisland with the building of the 52-bedroom River Island Hotel.

The flagship town centre Killarney Plaza Hotel and Spa opened in 2002 with 198 bedrooms.

Relatives of dead man charged with murder

The three men charged with the murder of Killarney man Thomas Dooley in Tralee in October are all related to him.

All three appeared in court via video link this week.

Thomas Dooley (41) of Carrigohane Straight, Cork City, a cousin of the de ceased, and second man, 20-year-old Thomas Dooley of the same Cork City address and a nephew of the dead man, have been charged with the Killarney man’s murder.

The dead man's brother, 35-year-old Pat rick Dooley of Arbutus Grove, Killarney, has also been charged with his murder. All three will appear in court at various dates in December when books of evi dence will be served.

Michael was at the helm as managing director of the O'Donoghue Ring Collec tion until his recent retirement and the O'Donoghue Ring Collection is now one of the largest employers in Kerry.

Michael also led the town’s relationship with tour companies who have brought a vast amount of business to Killarney and Kerry.

Donal and Michael also expanded into the UK hospitality market with Centre Is land Hotels which now has hotel proper ties based in Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham.

PRAISE

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said both Donal Ring and Michael O’Dono ghue are prime examples of what can be achieved in life through hard work, sheer determination and a solid business plan and they have set a great example for future generations to follow.

“The employment they have created in Kerry over five decades has been incred ible,” he said.

“Through their hotels they have certain ly helped to put Killarney and Kerry on the map, both nationally and interna tionally,” the mayor added.

Cairde Chill Áirne Chairman, Conor Hen nigan, said he is looking forward to Don al and Michael being inducted into the Order of Inisfallen as they are both very worthy and popular recipients.

“Collectively, Killarney Municipal Dis trict Authority and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce are delighted to bestow Killarney’s highest honour on these two fine gentlemen and to recog nise them for the tremendous contribu tion they have made,” he said.

The Cairde Chill Áirne Order of Inisfallen awards scheme was established in 2005 to recognise outstanding contributions by people to the economic development of the town and its tourism industry.

Previous recipients include actor Mi chael Fassbender, former Taoiseach Enda Kenny, industrialist Isolde Lieb herr, Charles, the former Prince of Wales and now King of England, entertainer Daniel O’Donnell, tour operators Brian Stack, Linda Roberts and Brian McCol gan, travel writer Susan Poole, former ministers John O’Donoghue and Jimmy Deenihan and tourism official Margaret Cahill.

Students glad to finally get Jr Cert results

Even though the Junior Cert results were two months later than usual it didn't stop some students from feeling the nerves on Wednesday afternoon.

Hundreds of students across the three Killarney secondary schools anxiously took their envelopes in their hands and hoped for the best.

And the general feeling was relief across the board - some even saying due to the delay that the results didn't even matter anymore.

Fifth Year Killarney Community College student Rhea O'Sullivan was very happy to get her results.

"I'm absolutely over the moon with my results," she told the Killarney Adver tiser.

"We all worked hard. Everyone at KCC is so happy and relieved to finally get them after such a long wait."

Her friend and classmate Aoibhinn Mc Crank said she too was "overjoyed" to finally get her results back.

"It was such an exciting time to share with my friends and family," she said. Thi Que Kennedy, Lucy Keane and Leah Clarke were all smiles at St Brigid's min utes after getting their hands on the Jr Cert results.

"I kinda forgot it was happening today [Wednesday] but it was nice to finally get them and I'm very happy with my results," Thi Que told the Killarney Ad vertiser.

Her friend Lucy Keane was smiling also. "I'm pretty happy overall. I didn't know what to expect as it [exams] was so long ago."

Leah said she too was happy. "I'm glad we finally got them."

For Fifth Year students Ciara O'Sullivan, Laura Fitzgerald and Laura Flynn in St Brigid's it was also relief.

"I haven't stopped shaking with hap piness. I'm in shock that I did so well," Ciara said.

For Laura Fitzgerald it was also an anx ious morning.

"I'm happy with them. I'm relieved to finally get them."

Aoife McClarence, Nicole Murphy and Elizabeth Fleming in St Brigid's were also beaming with smiles.

Aoife was chuffed to make it into the top two percent for Distinctions in Ire land.

"I'm shocked and delighted," she said.

"It was worth waiting for!"

Nicole was also stunned with her re sults.

"I'm shocked that I did so well. I com pletely forgot about them [exams] be cause we were waiting for so long."

Elizabeth said she was surprised but happy.

"I've kinda moved on."

Tim Daly, Michale Pingo and James An derson all said they were "happy out" af ter opening their results in St Brendan's College on Wednesday afternoon.

Mark Cronin from St Brendan's College said he was happy to finally get the re sults.

Lucas Cronin said that "it took too long to get the results". "I would have pre ferred to get them two months ago."

Daithi O'Shea, Bryn Flaherty, Dara Stack and Diarmuid Furlong also from St Brendan's College said they were glad to get them.

"I'm happy out. I did well enough," Dara said.

Diarmuid added that he's "very happy". "I'm very happy with my results. I didn't mind waiting that long, it's good to fi nally get them."

Principal of Killarney Community Col lege, Stella Loughnane, said that the Junior Cert results are "important" and "serve as a huge milestone in young stu dents' lives".

"I believe that the students who re ceived their results this year should be commended for their commitment to learning in the midst of a pandemic and limited teaching time within the class room at various stages in their junior cycle," she told the Killarney Advertiser. "This group has been through it all. Their excellent academic achieve ments and resilience will serve them well as they continue their academic journey into the Leaving Cert cycle. I am immensely proud of my students and dedicated staff. These Junior Cert results are important and serve as a huge milestone in our young students' lives. It's important to celebrate and ac knowledge all our pupils achievements while in school. I don't think the date the results came out on can take away from that."

David's on target to reach his goal

David Looney is on target to complete his 170-mile run in No vember.

In doing so he has well exceeded his goal of €2,000 and is likely to break the €9,000 barrier by the time he finishes in the middle of next week.

The well-known manager of the Tatler Jack Bar on Plunkett St set the target in memory of his sister-in-law Geral dine O'Connor, who passed away on November 30 last year after a five year battle with cancer.

David ran at least eight miles every day to raise funds for the Palliative Care Unit in University Hospital Kerry.

As the Killarney Advertiser closed for press on Thursday night David had completed 150 miles.

With just 20 left to run he will scale back his distances over the weekend so he can reach the 170-mile target on Geraldine’s anniversary next Wednes day. Geraldine was a patient of Pallia tive Care Unit in her final days and the family experienced first hand the level of care that goes on there. "A huge thanks to everyone that has supported me. I will take a bit of a rest Monday and Tuesday so I can finish it on the correct day,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I have had great help and support, even my seven-year-old son Jack has come and ran two miles with me a few times, he just wanted to help. But it just shows, unfortunately, how many peo ple know about the first-class facilities at the palliative care."

David started his run on November 1 and despite the horrendous weather during the month he has never missed a day.

“I don’t mind the weather,” he added.

“Once it is not torrential when I set off, you don’t be long building up a sweat.”

Updates can be seen on Tatler Jack's social media pages and donations can be made via the GoFundMe page by searching '170 Miles in November in memory of Geraldine’.

School thrilled with €10k sensory pod prize

She had purchased a ticket in the raffle and was thrilled when the school won.

PARADE: Volunteers are needed for the Christmas in Killarney parades which start this weekend.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Behind the scenes Killarney is gearing up for the festive season

The team behind Christmas in Killarney are busy putting the final touches on the preparations for this year's festival which begins this weekend with the Magic Parade tomorrow (Saturday). They have put out a call for volunteers to help run the parade and for partici pants to dress in character.

“Killarney’s tremendous community spirit shines bright as hundreds of vol unteers from the local community join together to make this festival a suc cess," said an event organiser.

If you have an hour to spare and would like to be part of the fabulous team of volunteers, they are currently looking for the following:

Stewards between 5.40pm - 7pm and costume wearers are needed 4.50pm - 6.30pm for each parade. Interested parties should send a WhatsApp mes sage to 087 244 6131 or email events@ killarney.ie letting organisers know what dates (November 26, December 3, 10 and 17) they can do.

Meanwhile Killarney Municipal District has announced the free parking sched ule that will run for the entire month of December.

FREE PARKING

8.30am to 11am Glebe and Upper New St car parks

8.30am to 1pm Fair Hill and New St Lower car parks

4pm to 6.30pm New St Lower car park

All day Lewis Rd and High St car park.

There's something brand new in The Mon which will be of enor mous benefit to children with sen sory needs - and it cost the school just €5!

The Sensory Pod is worth a whopping €10,000 - but thanks to Principal Mary Brosnan - it barely cost them anything at all.

Presentation Monastery was announced the winner of the Sensory Pod from the sensorypod.ie with the support of Fresh Today Ireland and AsIAm, at the recent Irish Primary Principals' Network (IPPN) conference in the Gleneagle Hotel.

"It was brilliant, I couldn't believe it," Mary, describing it as the size of a bunkbed, told the Killarney Advertiser. "We're delighted as it's something we would never have been able to afford."

The school has a sensory unit - but it's of the more active kind, she explained, saying that the new pod is located in the corridor where pupils can take some qui et time out if needed.

"We have a sensory room but some chil dren have different sensory needs and our room is a very active space. We have it [the pod] along the corridor so it is ac cessible for everybody. The boys love it, they said it's like a spaceship!"

3,000 Team Hope boxes and counting

The call was put out, schools and com munity groups across Killarney and South Kerry banded together and when the truck arrives to pick up the boxes there'll be even more as collections will take place in six more schools next week.

Volunteers have been working tirelessly at the O'Connor Unit on the ground of St Finan's where inside there's hardly a corner which hasn't got a box ready to be transported.

Hours and hours of sorting has taken place with some volunteers giving up

full days of their time to make sure the children will get a box filled with colour ful items such as toys, clothing, tooth brushes and facecloths.

Sheila Rice, co-ordinator for the Team Hope Shoe Box Appeal, said a lot of work has been put in by everyone involved.

"We have over 3,000 boxes in the cen tre done with six more schools to do," Sheila told the Killarney Advertiser.

"We are delighted with the response this year. Thanks to all the volunteers who worked so diligently to finalise all these shoeboxes for the vulnerable children, the schools, teachers, pupils/students and parents who supported the charity

so willingly. Also to the public who also participated with shoeboxes and filler items and businesses who supported us financially to enable us purchase the fillers the drop off centres." The Civil Defence provided transport to the far away areas while the HSE facili tated the appeal by allowing use of the

O’Connor Unit.

"Thanks to everybody who helped us in anyway."

The last date for handing in boxes to the centre is next Tuesday (November 29) in order to get them ready and shipped out in time to reach the children Christ mas day.

Killarney man to launch second Irish history book

Killarney native Patrick O’Sullivan Greene will launch his second book in the Great Southern Killar ney on December 2.

O’Sullivan Greene explains Éamon de Valera’s mission to gain recognition for the newly formed Irish republic in New York in 1919 in his latest book ‘Revolu tion at the Waldorf: America and the Irish War of Independence’.

Without American recognition and funding the young Irish Government was sure to fail against the might of the British Empire and the book tells the story of how de Valera and Ire

land-based Michael Collins – much to the defiance of the British authorities at Dublin Castle – got the new State off the ground.

O’Sullivan grew up in New Street and is now based in Beaufort after a career in finance took him all over the world including Dublin, London, New York and France.

“Killarney is the natural place for me to launch the book,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“There will be an interesting mix of people there.”

O’Sullivan Greene published his first book, ‘Crowdfunding the Revolution: The First Dáil Loan and the Battle for Irish Independence’, in 2020.

Killarney Community College student Ta mika Heaphy, won a place in the Regional Soroptimist International Girl’s Public Speaking Competition which will take place in Cork next January. Tamika is through to the next stage after competing against very stiff competition on Tuesday morning in the local heat of the competition in the Killarney Avenue Hotel.

English teacher and mentor Ms O'Shea commended Tamika on her achieve ment.

"She prepared well, spoke eloquently and passionately about a subject she ob viously cares about," Ms O'Shea said.

"We hope her achievements inspire her fellow students to enter more public speaking competitions. We are very proud of her."

Cute Christmas crafts go on sale for hospice

Crafting away at the International Hotel, Killarney Crafty Ladies were spotted creating a new batch of bears in aid of Kerry Hospice.

Established in 2013 by Margaret McCar thy, the group have raised over €23,000 to date.

Two of the crafty ladies, Kate O’Connor and Betty Benson, boarded the train to Dublin to attend a stitch and knitting show, there they casually met with Peg Coffey and Margaret McCarthy - and Kil larney Crafty Ladies was born!

Since then, the ladies meet up once a month - excluding the summer months. They have travelled to different charity shops nationwide to carefully select their adopted Killarney bears, giving these pre-loved bears a complete makeover

into unique Christmas gifts, ready to take up residence in their homes this festive season.

Organiser, Margaret McCarthy, Countess Road, who is missing from the photo and hence taking up residence in the Inter national Hotel, is usually host of these monthly meetings and chose the Kerry Hospice as a sole beneficiary, having lost her husband Oliver to cancer in 2011.

Ranging in price from €5 - €70, the Kil larney Crafty Ladies can be found selling their creatively revamped pre-loved bears, at the Killarney Outlet Centre on the three Saturdays coming up to Christ mas - tomorrow (Saturday), and Decem ber 3 and 10.

You can also support the Kerry Hospice this Christmas by popping by the Brícín Restaurant and picking up a bear of your choice at their shop between 10am6pm.

INEC debut a dream come true

Taking to the INEC stage with their very own show was a dream come true for young actors and writers this week.

The teens brought 'Prom Queen: The Jukebox Musical’ to life on the big stage on Monday, and did it all again on Tues day for 400 local students.

While it may have been a daunting task to write, produce and act in their own show, the youngsters took it all in their stride and delivered outstanding performanc es. The musical was written, created and starred 15-year-old Sinéad Greene, a Third Year student at Killarney Com munity College. Her friend Rachel Griffin (17) was co-director, executive producer and also a lead actor, and the cast in cluded local students from Killarney and surrounds. The aim of the show was to bring awareness to issues such as mental health, bullying, domestic abuse.

There were also references to suicide and

LGBTQ+ representation but the idea was to create dialogue and get the conversa tion going.

"We’re still all on a high! Another 400 attended the show for schools and the feedback to date has been absolutely in credible!" Sinead's mom, Katrin Pietzon ka, told the Killarney Advertiser.

"Lots of praise for all cast members but

especially to Sinead, Marie and Rachel Griffin, the executive producer, who made it all possible!"

She added that they are all grateful for all the support throughout the Prom Queen journey!

"Special thanks to Kieran Somers, Lily MacMonagle, Shannon and Makaela Crowley from the MACademy, Tony

supporting our Irish born humanitarian aid agency."

Jimmy Deenihan added that "last year GOAL provided aid to 18.5 million of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable adults and children across GOAL’s 14 countries of operation".

"This would not be possible without the generosity of the Irish people, thou sands of whom carry on the much-loved tradition of the GOAL Mile every year."

Lily MacMonagle from MACademy said that the "young adults have surpassed any expectation that me or anyone from The MACademy could have imagined".

"Their passion, creativity and patience for the dramatic arts is outstanding. This show is humorous, full of love, clever, funny and compassionate but more than anything it is relatable to everyone young and old sitting in the theatre. I take my hat off to the whole cast, to the writer to the director, you’ve only just begun."

Filmmaker Jessica Courtney Leen, who is also Head Drama Tutor at the West End House School of Arts, added that it's been really special following their journey.

"Killarney has something really inspiring here - this is a group of entrepreneurial young people who’ve created something they love and brought so much joy to their audiences because of it," she said.

"There’s talent in abundance here but it’s not even about that, it’s about the com munity they’ve created and the magic they’ve shared."

Who says school isn't fun?

Students got stuck into Arabic belly dancing, Irish Sign Lan guage, Russian ballet and Portuguese Capoeira - to celebrate language and culture.

The colourful and fun day, to highlight the benefits of foreign language skills, took place last Thursday for Transi tion Year students in Killarney Com munity College as they joined with 15,000 other TYs nationally for the #ThinkLanguages workshops.

The school is in the running to be crowned the #ThinkLanguages Champion Team of the year after sub mitting their very impressive entry. If successful the college will be awarded the trophy as well as live workshops for their students which will run over a full day in the school.

The event included inspirational talks, fun language-filled workshops, and a quiz where the students in the col lege had the opportunity to compete against schools nationwide in the in teractive #ThinkLanguages Quiz.

There was an opening ceremony with inspirational speakers, online lan guage workshops, and a selection of live workshops that were made avail able for the nationwide event by Lan guages Connect. The students got to choose from a variety of workshops made available to them through the Languages Connect programme.

The college were given the opportu nity to manage their own workshops and invite local speakers and busi nesses to take part and support their event and showcase the languages that are spoken in the school and used in the community. It gave stu dents a chance to explore how people use different languages in their lives, workplaces and families and most importantly work with local people within the community. The students organised a variety of workshops in cluding CPR training in German and Polish.

They also had a mindfulness in Ger man, Speed Dating in French and Spanish, Portuguese basketball les son, Tortilla Making, Ukrainian Cul ture workshop and finished off the day with a slideshow they had pre pared on 'Strange Traditions' in other countries.

"It was a wonderful opportunity to work with people within our com munity and it is evident from the array of live workshops that were available that we are fortunate to be able to celebrate living in such a mul ti-cultural society," Principal, Stella Loughnane, said.

Blending autobiography, philosophical insights and practical, action-steps for change, 'The Other Side' is an insight into how a better life is possible. Each chapter contains ‘Neil’s Notes’, practical tools and actions you can try. Each book comes with a QR code to a free eBook, which contains additional tools and practical advice.

“As long as we're living and breathing, it is always possible to live a better life. The good news is that by following my story and advice, change and taking action will get easier. The ‘Other Side’ is not perfection, it’s living with hope in the midst of everything,” he said.

Hike in VAT rate will make Ireland third most-expensive in Europe

Hotel and guesthouse owners in Kerry met with local political rep resentatives last week to discuss the challenges facing the tourism sector as 2023 approaches.

The hike in VAT rates, due in March, will make Ireland the third most-expensive in Europe behind Denmark and Britain. Currently Ireland sits mid-table and the 9% VAT rate is inline with Cyprus, the Netherlands, Lithuania and Estonia.

Hoteliers also discussed with local polit ical representatives the importance of the 9% Tourism VAT rate and how this is the right rate for the long-term sustain able development of Ireland’s largest indigenous industry, which in 2019 em ployed 270,000 people and returned over €2bn to the exchequer in direct tourism-related taxes.

“The current 9% rate is the right rate for Irish tourism in a European context.

Increasing the tourism VAT rate by half to 13.5% in March 2023 would make Ire land’s tourism VAT rate the third highest in Europe, far above other European countries where they take tourism se riously like Portugal (6%), Malta (7%) Netherlands (9%),” Bernadette Randles, Chair of the Kerry of the Irish Hotels Fed eration, said.

“Tourism is an important part of the local economy here in Kerry and the contin ued recovery of tourism and hospital ity must be to the fore of Government economic policy as we seek to support these businesses throughout these con tinued uncertain times.”

Local hoteliers welcomed the upturn in tourism this year, businesses through out the country remain in recovery mode, having survived the worst eco nomic shock in recent memory and who are now confronting skyrocketing energy costs and an expected global economic downturn in key markets next year.

Rathmore students gain first-hand experience of EU law

Four Rathmore students were amongst a group who got the personal low down about Europe's approach to climate change in the European Parliament.

Killarney man Sean Kelly MEP awarded 24 Transition Year students from Ireland with the incredible opportunity of travel ling to Brussels in Belgium for the educa tional experience.

Anna O’Mahoney, Lainey Harty, Jennifer Dineen and Tara Jones from Scoil Phobail Luachra in Rathmore were selected.

Upon completing an essay competition on the same topic their teacher Miriam O’Regan said the girls were thrilled to be travelling and grateful of the warm welcome and respect they received from parliament members, especially Sean Kelly MEP for Ireland South.

They enjoyed a luxurious stay in the Thon Hotel EU and were given a tour of the

EU parliament, including activities and games to gain insight into the work of the EU and its MEPs.

Additionally, they were gifted hoodies appropriately coloured in the blue and yellow of the EU, a tour of a Belgian choc olate factory and made waffles at the waffle workshop.

The girls were treated to dinner at multi ple restaurants including the Hard Rock Café where they had an unexpected, but very dramatic, experience of thunder and fork lightning as they looked out on the streets of Brussels.

"All the girls are extremely appreciative for this once in a lifetime experience and admit that it opened their eyes to the process behind our law and the work of our MEPs," Miriam O’Regan said.

Caring group craft charity blankets

One

Using their range of skills and some

colourful wool, members of Kilcummin Community Care worked together to make blankets for service users on the Kerry Cork Cancer Health Link Bus.

"Each blanket is assigned as a personal gift to the clients using the Cancer Link Bus and is kept by them," Kate Fleming, Chairperson of Kilcummin Community

Care, said.

The knitting of the squares to make the blankets began at a gathering in the Rose Hotel in 2018. It was a gathering of different volunteer groups.

The Kerry Cork Cancer Health Link Bus were requesting knitted squares to make blankets for the clients who were

using their facilities, she explained.

"Kilcummin Community Care were knitting at the time, so it was decided to help out this worthy cause. We re ceived donations of wool from people in the parish and surrounding areas. Kilcummin ICA also got involved in the efforts."

During the two years of COVID-19, members of both organisations contin ued to knit and are still knitting to the present day.

Over 30,000 acorns gathered in Killarney National Park

Over 30,000 acorns were gathered by National Park and Wild life Service outdoor staff from the ancient Derrycunnihy native oak woodlands and Muckross Gardens, Killarney National Park.

The oak woodlands form the most exten sive and oldest areas of native woodlands in Ireland and Northern Europe. It has the largest yew woodland, which occurs along the Muckross Peninsula.

The work carried out was supervised by horticulturalist Gerry Murphy and gar dener Stephen Moore.

The outdoor staff painstakingly potted, or sewed, 31,375 acorns to be exact, mainly Sessile Oak, which is native to Ire land. The mammoth task will ensure that our native woodlands will continue for generations and centuries to come.

“What we have here is the forest of the future, germination will take place in early spring, and come summer time, the pots will be on benches outdoors for at least two more seasons before being planted out,” Stephen Moore, head gar dener, said.

The precious acorns were all collected from registered collection areas of local provenance within Killarney National Park. Other plant species for future gath ering will include, Yew, Birch, Holly and Alder.

The outdoor staff working in the National Park on site polytunnel included James

Doherty, David Fitzgerald, Sjoerd van Wierst, Luke O’Sullivan, Brendan Lynch and Cathal Sexton. They also seeded Eng lish Oak, and Arbutus trees on Muckross Peninsula, one of the few places it grows in Europe. Horticulturist Gerry Murphy explained that they’re encouraging the planting of more native trees in Killarney National Park.

"Going back to the original owners of Muckross Estate, the Herberts of Muck ross, they had their own extensive nurs ery for planting native trees," he said. "Today the 300-year-old champion oak tree in the landscaped garden is still growing strong. Sometimes nature needs our help from time to time.”

Killarney National Park has over 610 hec tares of the most important ancient na tive oak woodland in Ireland. Oak can live for over 500 years and one of the biggest oaks in Killarney National Park is the Roy al Oak on the shores of Lough Leane. The yew woodland on the Muckross Peninsu la is one of the three largest natural yew woods in Europe. The centrepiece iconic yew in Muckross Abbey is believed to be over 550-years-old.

Fundraiser for seriously ill Valentia woman in London

Family and friends of a Valentia woman who is seriously ill in Lon don have started a GoFundMe campaign to help her road to re covery.

Edel O’Sullivan has been living in Lon don for around 10 years.

She is well known in the local GAA scene having played for the Kingdom Kerry Gaels in London and Southern Gaels in her youth.

This year was supposed to be a very special year for the young mother. She, her partner Shane and daughter

Saoirse, were preparing for the couple’s wedding on New Year’s Eve.

That all changed in April this year when she started to suffer from sever head aches.

She was diagnosed with a brain tumour known as Chordoma. It is an extremely rare tumour affecting one in a million people each year.

Edel underwent surgery in August to remove the tumour.

Unfortunately, she has spent the last three and a half months in an Intensive Care Unit due to complications. She is now awaiting a bed in a rehabil

itation unit.

Doctors have indicated that there is a long road to recovery which will require substantial financial support and rehab. While she can now understand every one, Edel needs day-to-day intense nursing support and physiotherapy.

She needs to relearn how to sit up, stand and walk, and relearn how to write. Speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and psychologi cal support are also needed.

Donations can be made by searching 'Edel's Road to Recovery' on GoFund Me.

Fisherman reels in one of 'world's largest goldfish'

It was a 'reely' record-breaking day for one humble fisherman who managed to catch one of the world's biggest goldfish.

British angler Andy Hackett (42), a com pany director from Worcester, landed an elusive 5st legend known as 'The Carrot'a hybrid species of a leather carp and koi. However, it took all his strength as it took over 25 minutes at Bluewater Lakes in Champagne, France, to reel it in.

“I always knew 'The Carrot' was in there but never thought I would catch it," Andy said.

“I knew it was a big fish when it took my bait and went off side to side and up and down with it. It was brilliant to catch it but it was also sheer luck.”

'The Carrot' was put into the lake 20 years ago, and has proved to be a slippery customer ever since.

After taking some obligatory photos to record the historic catch, Andy made a cup of tea to celebrate his hard day's work.

Belgium ladies make a mark on GAA scene

An extraordinary run of fortune came to an end last Sunday when a Belgian GAA team bowed out of an Ireland competition.

Late November and early December is traditionally the business end of the All-Ireland club football and hurling seasons.

That is why local teams like Fossa and

Rathmore are preparing for big match es this weekend.

One of the unlikely stories of the club championship this year came from Bel gium.

The Belgium GAA ladies football team made it all the way to the All-Ireland Junior Club Championship Quarter Fi nal.

They faced Ulster champions Cas

tleblaney Faughs at a game that was played in Maastricht in the Netherlands last Sunday.

And while the Belgium (and mainly Brussels) based ladies lost out to their Monaghan rivals, it brought an end to an extraordinary year for the team.

Along the way they beat All-Britain champions Hugh O’Neill’s of Leeds in England.

Kerry stars help raise climate change awareness

Two of Kerry's GAA stars jetted off to Africa this week, in a bid to plant a million trees and raise awareness of the impact that climate change is having on some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

Kerry GAA stars Stefan Okunbor and Tomás O Se have joined 50 sportsmen and women from across the country on a week long trip to Kenya, which in cluded playing a series of GAA matches billed as the ‘Plant the Planet Games’, which took place in Nairobi at the week end.

Participants aren’t just raising aware ness about climate change either, as they are collectively aiming to raise more than €350,000 in sponsorship support, to plant a million trees in Africa and support the efforts of Irish develop ment charity Self Help Africa to combat the effects of climate change amongst small-scale farming communities.

The event is being organised by former Galway dual-player Alan Kerins ‘War riors for Humanity,’ the Gaelic Players Association and Self Help Africa, and will also include a programme of sports sessions with children, tree planting days to rehabilitate degraded lands, and visits to agricultural projects being im plemented by Self Help Africa in Kenya. Alongside the Kerry players on the in augural ‘Plant the Planet Games’ are Limerick Hurler Sean Finn, Galway's Damien Comer, Tyrone's Conor Mey ler, Kilkenny’s Grace Walsh, and Aidan O'Shea from Mayo.

The players took to the field for a series

of exhibition games at Nairobi Rugby Club on Sunday, and were the guests of honour at a reception hosted by the Irish Ambassador to Kenya, that night.

Speaking about the event, Alan Ker ins of Warriors for Humanity said that “Gaelic Games has an ability to bring communities together for a greater good, and we are sure this event will be no different”.

Director of Business Development at Self Help Africa, Martha Hourican said that tree planting in Kenya would do much more than remove harmful green house gases from the atmosphere, as the trees being planted would provide alternative sources of food, additional crops that could be sold for income, and would help restore degraded land and improve soil quality for farming in Kenya and elsewhere on the continent.

Self Help Africa planted one million trees in Africa last year in a collaboration that was supported by popular yoghurt brand Glenisk.

Gaelic Players Association CEO, Tom Parsons, said that a key element of the GPAs role was to empower inter-county players to realise the bigger picture be yond sport.

“Not only will this campaign allow the players to come together and experi ence something entirely different, but in doing so they will also be able to lev erage their influence off the field of play in support of the planet and some of the world’s most challenged communities.”

Grim week in America

It was a particularly grim week in the United States after a total of 12 people, including one gunman, were killed in shootings.

The latest mass murder occurred on Tuesday night at a Walmart Store in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Six people died when the store’s manag er opened fire shortly after 10pm local time.

A seventh person was found dead out side the store and police believe this was the shooter.

"Chesapeake Police confirm an active shooter incident with fatalities at the Walmart on Sam's Circle. The shooter is deceased," the City of Chesapeake tweeted.

On Saturday night a gunman entered a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Col orado.

He opened fire and killed five people

before being detained by police who ar rived at the scene within minutes.

State Governor Jared Polis declared a week of morning and instructed that public flags should be lowered to halfmast on all public buildings for five days.

“To honour and remember the victims of the horrific shooting at Club Q in Col orado Springs, flags will be lowered for five days to remember each of the five individuals who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy,” he said.

The suspect was identified as Ander son Lee Aldrich, according to Colorado Springs Police. He used a long rifle in the shooting, and two firearms were found at the scene.

CNN, citing data from the Gun Violence Archive, said there have been more than 600 mass shootings in the United States this year, defined as an incident in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.

Listowel is one 'Sound Town'

Judges chose from seven finalist entries across the country, each embodying Ireland’s worldwide reputation for kind ness and generosity, but it was Listow el’s outstanding community spirit and exemplary examples of volunteerism that helped them fight off stiff com petition to scoop the overall title and a €10,000 community prize fund.

The market town has a community with a can-do attitude, on a mission to better the community for all. In a bid to boost morale during the COVID-19 pandemic, the local community took to the streets

to perform the popular 'Jerusalema' dance with young and old alike getting involved. The town also holds a Guin ness World Record for gathering the most people dressed as nuns, which raised funds for local charities.

Awarded Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town in 2018, Listowel’s Tidy Town committee and volunteers continue to work tire lessly to ensure Listowel always looks its best.

“Huge congratulations to Listowel and its entire community. It’s a wonderful campaign that shines a light on towns and villages doing remarkable work to make it a better place to live and work,” Alison Curtis, said.

Public reminded to be 'Winter Ready'

The HSE, Kerry County Council and An Garda Síochána are encouraging house holds to make preparations for adverse weather and to ensure that neighbours reach out to older or vulnerable house holds at this time to ensure that they are prepared for any potential winter weath er.

The Kerry agencies are working closely with their counterparts in Cork as part of the Cork and Kerry Interagency Emer gency Management Office coordination of the response to winter emergencies. The local organisations are drawing the attention of the public to the winter ready.ie website which has useful tips and information for members of the public, including advice on how to avoid trips and falls, and how to make sure your home and family are prepared for winter.

The HSE Department of Public Health for the region is encouraging the public to protect the health service this winter by taking up both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines when they are offered. Walkin clinics are available for anyone who

hasn’t received the full course of COV ID-19 vaccines, and certain groups are now being offered booster vaccines. The flu vaccine is also available at the moment free of charge to certain groups, including healthcare workers, those aged over 65, and children aged between two and 17.

The firefighters of Cork City, Cork County, and Kerry County Fire Services ask that householders check their smoke and car bon monoxide alarms are working, and if they’re not already installed, to get them installed.

Local statutory bodies will be promoting important messages over the coming weeks around issues like road safety, pre paring the home, health and well-being, advice for older people, and details of im portant emergency contacts.

All of the local agencies including the Health Service Executive, An Garda Síochána, Kerry Fire Service, Kerry Civil Defence and Kerry County Council work closely together to ensure a coordinated response to any emergencies which may arise over the winter months.

Christmas motorbike charity road run launched

The Kerry Bikers are hosting their annual Christmas Bike Run on De cember 18.

The event will raise funds for St Francis’ Special School at St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort and Eagle Lodge in Tralee. Now in its sixth year, the run, which is organised by an amalgamation of several Kerry motorcycle clubs under the banner of Kerry Bikers, will visit Killarney. The run gets underway at 10.30am from Tralee. The first stop off is in Sheahan’s Centra on the Muckross Road where the Tralee group will be joined by local mo

torcyclists before setting off on a yet to be decided route.

“We will announce the route in Killarney. Last year we went to Killorglin, Farran fore and Castleisland. This year Abbey feale and Listowel may be in reach and if so we will make donations to Nano Nagle Special School too," organiser Dave Foley said.

Over one hundred motorcycles are ex pected to take part in the run. Last year the full convoy measured 1.6km from start to finish.

“We hope to exceed that this year,” add ed Foley

The Fiat Professional Scudo is back on the market after nearly six years and the all-new and fully up dated multifunctional van is avail able now from Adams of Tralee.

As well as being the county’s Hyundai car dealer, the Tralee garage is also home to Fiat commercials in the Kingdom. The Scudo has not been sold in Ireland

since 2016 but when Fiat became part of the Stellantis Group it paved the way for the manufacture of medium vans. The family run garage is top of the sales charts for the whole of Ireland when it comes to Fiat vans and that is something that Adam’s of Tralee is keen to expand on.

A new extension is currently being built at the garage specifically to cope with sales and after sales demands by com

mercial customers.

The newly extended workshop, when competed will have three new lifts ded icated to vans.

“Van drivers tend to look after their ve hicles better than car owners,” manager and Aghadoe man Marcus O’Shea ex plained.

“They look after their vans because they know a breakdown will cost money, all their tools and equipment are in their

vans, and a day off the road means they are not getting to a job and that has a knock on effect on the next job. Putting in three extra lifts shows we are commit ted to commercial customers, they often take priority over car customers.

“That comes from Des Adams, he was and is always a big commercial man and knows they importance of keeping

on the road. And it shows, we have a lot of fleet customers.”

Both Bon Secours Hospital Tralee and the Kerry GAA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the hospital to become a new health partner.

Under this MOU, Kerry GAA and BSHT will collaborate across a range of mutu ally beneficial areas. This collaboration will include elite players having access to physiotherapy services, certain diagnos tic testing, DEXA scans and other diag nostics as required.

The document was signed on behalf of the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee by Mr TJ O’Connor, CEO and on behalf of the Kerry GAA by its Chairman, Mr Patrick O’Sul livan. The partnership has been agreed initially until 2027 and both the hospital and the Kerry GAA are keen to see this partnership develop into a longer-term relationship.

Mr TJ O’Connor, CEO of Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, welcomed the agree ment.

“Bon Secours Tralee is very happy to sign

this MOU with Kerry GAA," he said.

"When Liam Lynch first approached us with his vision for this partnership ar rangement, we immediately embraced the concept and are delighted to bring it to fruition. We look forward to sharing our state-of-the-art facilities and people with our elite GAA athletes over the com ing years for the ultimate benefit of our GAA teams in Kerry."

Mr Patrick O’Sullivan, Chairman of Kerry GAA, said that the new agreement will be of great benefit to Kerry GAA.

“Having access to the facilities, services and people in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee for our elite GAA teams is impera tive in the modern game," he said.

"Quick access to diagnostic testing and scanning plays a critical role in facilitating early diagnosis, rehabilitation and return to play. Having this speedy access to these services and the range of specialist at the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee will ensure that our players receive the best possible care and are back on the pitch as soon as possible. This is hugely important to us and we look forward to develop ing and expanding our partnership with

Ms Rosalie Stack, Physiotherapy Manag er, Bon Secours Hospital Tralee said “this is a really exciting opportunity for the Physiotherapy Department in BSHT".

"We look forward to recruiting some ad ditional staff and working collaboratively with Kerry GAA in the months and years

How to value a company

competitive? How stable has the revenue generation been over time? Has the ROE from management been competitive?

You have financial statements that give you an insight into how the company is performing at a specific moment in time, but it will be the future growth projec tions from management and market ana lysts that ultimately determine the price. Take Tesla, for instance. Revenue and cash flows provided insight into the company’s performance, but it was pre dictions about future automated driving capabilities, battery production capacity and a world pivoting towards electronic vehicles that drove the company to its trillion-dollar valuation. Today, the reve nue and cash flows are better than they have ever been, but the story about to morrow has faded, and the company is down almost 60%.

While the numbers from today can be quantified, the story is driven by the fu ture growth possibilities of the company. These future growth possibilities can seem rational at any one moment, but as the economy and company performance

change, so do the growth possibilities. Be careful how much weight you put on the stories the market is telling you about specific companies. As the information changes, so too will the story.

To quote Morgan Housel “We can use historical data to assume a trend will continue, but that’s just a sto ry we want to believe in a world where things change all the time”

VALUATION TIPS

When valuing a company, you need to listen to the story being told by the com pany’s management team and assess whether this story is economically viable. Here are three areas to focus on and some questions you should always ask yourself when valuing a company.

CURRENT CASHFLOWS

Is the company generating the profits needed to fund future business? Are the gross and net margins of the company

GROWTH POTENTIAL

What has the revenue and earnings growth rate been over time? Are there potential revenue streams not currently being accounted for? Does the company have operating leverage that will help drive future profit margins? Does the company have a durable competitive ad vantage?

FUTURE RISK

Who are the major competitors in the space, and does the company have an established moat to protect its market share? At what point will the company saturate the market, inhibiting future growth? Is the story currently being told by management viable if economic con ditions changes?

STOCK PICKING IS HARD

Remember, while the stock market has historically provided positive returns, picking individual names remains a dif ficult feat, with the odds very much stacked against you.

For those who get it right, financial ela tion awaits. But beware, information is constantly changing, so the probability of success can be lower than you think, no matter how strongly you believe in the future story you tell yourself.

SECOND CHANCES: The not so familiar ‘second rut’ in Irish Red Deer, is visi ble in wilderness outcrops of Killarney National Park. It occurs when there?is a spike in deer breeding behaviour about a month after the peak of the main?rut, when unbred young hinds come into oestrus. SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

Home care is essential for glowing, youthful skin. It's like brushing your teeth, it must be done twice a day.

STEP 1: Cleanse to remove sweat, oil, dirt and other pollutants that your skin naturally collects throughout the day and night. It’s the first step in your skincare routine and shouldn't be rushed. How to do it; Cleanse your skin in the morning and in the evening to keep your pores clear and your face fresh. Your cleanser may vary based on skin type, but with all cleansers, the general consensus is to apply them using an upward, circu lar motion so as to prevent wrinkles from forming. Make sure your hands are clean in order to prevent excess dirt from en tering your pores.

STEP 2: There is a lot of confusion around toner, and when you’re first establishing a daily skincare routine, it may even seem unnecessary. But most experts agree that toning is an important addition to your skin care routine with beneficial ef fects for your skin. After you cleanse your skin of impurities, toner removes any res idue left behind by the cleanser as well as any make-up or oils your cleanser might have missed. The added cleansing effects help prepare your skin to absorb mois turiser and minimise the appearance of pores. Some toners may have PH balanc ing and antiseptic effects as well. Apply toner right after you have cleansed your

skin while it is still damp. The best way to apply it is with a cotton pad or cotton ball, simply soaking cotton pad with toner and wiping upward and out, starting at your neck.

STEP 3: Exfoliate. Our skin is constantly shedding millions of skin cells every day, but sometimes those cells can build up on the surface of our skin and need some extra help to be removed. Exfoliating removes these dead skin cells that have accumulated in our pores. If you strug gle with blackheads, acne or breakouts, you’re not going to want to miss this step. It’s best to exfoliate after toning and be fore moisturising. You should exfoliate one to three times a week, but this de pends on your skin type and how it reacts to exfoliation. Experiment and find what works best for you. There are chemical exfoliators and granule exfoliators such as your traditional sugar or salt scrub. Both can be effective tools for removing dead skin cells, but chemical exfoliating ingredients like AHA and BHA are often more effective in getting deep into your pores and removing buildup. Properly cleansed skin will allow your next steps e.g. serums and moisturisers get to the right layers of the skin where they will be most effective.

For a skincare consultation or more advice just ask Jill on 064 6632966.

€72.5 million needed for Fitzgerald Stadium redevelopment

The proposed revamp at Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium will cost in the region of €72.5 million, Kerry GAA chair Patrick O’Sullivan has revealed.

Speaking at the County Convention on Monday, O’Sullivan highlighted the need for improvements at the famous old ground – not only for the benefit of GAA in Kerry but also to attract international acts to the town.

“Right now the stadium needs a major refit, upgrading it to a multi-event centre to cater for the needs of the people of Kerry into the future,” the chairman said. “It needs to be modern and comfortable for our spectators not only to enjoy big GAA games but also to entice some of

the finest Irish and international enter tainment acts to this county.

“To do that the stadium has to be mod ernised and upgraded. Since I returned as chairman of Kerry GAA we have met the current Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Sports Minister Jack Chambers and Min ister for Education Norma Foley. These meetings were arranged by local TD Brendan Griffin. Brendan also arranged for Tánaiste Leo Varadkar to visit the stadium. All these meetings have been positive towards the planned project.

“Mr Varadkar spoke in the Dáil of his vis it to the stadium and we also met Moira Murrell Chief Executive of Kerry County Council and updated the Council of our

plans.”

In September, Varadkar noted that Ker ry is a “leading county in both sport and tourism and it needs a modern, stateof-the-art stadium. We can all agree on that. I know the people of Kerry will put money on the table and be able to raise a lot of money, but they will need a bit of help from the government too. I think that will be forthcoming in due course.” Addressing that financial aspect of the venture, Patrick O’Sullivan outlined how much it is likely to cost.

“Projected costing for the upgrading of the stadium is in the region of €72.5 million,” the Killarney native explained. “In January there will be a more detailed

presentation on how we propose to fund the project.”

In 2008 and 2009 works were complet ed in an attempt to modernise the Lewis Road end of the ground and the dressing room facilities.

A number of areas are still in obvious need of an upgrade, though, including the main O’Sullivan Stand and the score board end. Adding floodlights and par tially covering the terrace may also be on the cards.

The stadium, which was opened in honour of legendary Kerry player Dick Fitzgerald in 1936 at a cost of £3,000, can currently hold around 38,000 spec tators.

Five All-Stars for Kerry ladies

Five members of the Kerry team who were defeated by Meath in the 2022 All-Ireland final have been honoured with All-Star awards.

Kerry enjoyed a superb year, winning promotion back to Division 1 before ex ceeding all expectations by reaching the All-Ireland final in July. Although they ul timately came up short against a strong Meath team, the Kingdom earned 11 nominations for the All-Stars, which

were held in the Bonnington Hotel in Dublin last weekend.

In the end, five Kerry women made the final 15: Kayleigh Cronin (Dr Crokes), Aishling O’Connell (Cordal/Éire Óg Cork), Cáit Lynch (Castleisland Des monds), Niamh Carmody (Finuge/St

Killarney Valley AC named Club of the Year

ics Club had cause for celebrations on Wednesday as they picked up the prestigious Development Club of the Year prize at the 123.ie National Athletics Awards.

The award is handed out annually to a club who have made a positive impact on behalf of the sport within their com munity.

Sprinter Sarah Leahy of Killarney Val ley and UL was also honoured with the Female University Athlete of the Year award.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, coach and committee member Tomás Griffin said he and his clubmates were “delighted” and “very proud” to accept the Club Development award on behalf of all their athletes, coaches and admin istrators. The opening of their new track alongside St Brendan’s College in 2020 has been crucial, Griffin explained.

“The facility a catalyst but the passion was always there and we had people do ing their best and coaching long before there was a track. To see the momentum that came with the opening of the track being maintained is great. We now have a waiting list of people looking to join the

club.

“Did we see ourselves winning an award like this, in an organisation of 53,000 members and 400 clubs? No. But was it always possible? Yes. Killarney as a town across all sports – Gaelic football, soccer, basketball, cycling, judo, rock climbing –it’s a place where people excel. The bar is already raised. But being able to reach this level and achieve what we have in just two years shows what other talent is out there.”

Killarney Valley now boast five Irish inter nationals, 320 registered members and 22 Athletics Ireland accredited coaches. The club won 107 provincial and national medals in 2022, and they had 155 gradu ates from their Couch to 5k programme. Many of these participants are now reg ulars in the local Park Run and are con tinuing their personal health and fitness journeys with the club.

Nine Killarney Valley representatives attended the awards ceremony on Wednesday: Tomás Griffin, Jerry Griffin (chairperson), Bríd Stack, Gene Court ney, Con Lynch, Karen Smith, Sarah Le ahy, Jordan Lee, and Madie Wilson-Walk er. Sarah’s parents Mike and Marie also made the journey.

Senan’s) and Louise Ní Mhuirchearaigh (Corca Dhuibhne). Top scorer Ní Mhuir cheartaigh was collecting her third AllStar while for Lynch it was her second award. The other three players were first-time winners. Two-in-a-row champions Meath have six players on the team; eyebrows were raised in some quarters at the omission of star player Vikki Wall who has now moved to Australia to play in the AFLW. This week Adam Moynihan called to the Movement & Fitness Club on New Street to catch up with Killarney man Wilson da Silva.

The 38-year-old Brazilian recently won gold at the European Championship for Brazilian jiujitsu, and now he’s gunning for a world title.

Wilson, congratulations on your latest success in Rome and Abu Dhabi. Thank you, Adam. Before we chat about that, let’s go back to the start. How did you end up living in Killarney?

I came here around 15 years ago because I met someone from Killorglin and we went out for five or six years. After we broke up, I came to Killarney. I’m pretty much half-local, half-Brazilian now. What part of Brazil are you from? The northeast. A place called Recife. If you look at the map, it’s the nearest point to Ireland.

Do you get to go home often? I try to go once a year, you know? I was home earlier this year and then before Covid. But once a year I go home in the summertime.

It must be nice to get some sunshine. It’s nice, man. Even recently the doctor told me I have Vitamin D deficiency. My skin colour needs the sun! So I go home once a year. I follow the doctor’s advice. How did you get into jiu-jitsu?

I did it back home in Brazil but I contin ued here in Killarney. I trained with guys here, Pedro Bessa and Tom McGuire. Then there is another club in Killarney and I trained with them up until four years ago. Things weren’t working out so I started my own gym. I just wanted to do things my way which was to have a clean place, no ego, no drama, no stress, no jealousy. Just come, train jiu-jitsu and help each other. And it’s going well. Was it hard to go out on your own? In the beginning it was really difficult because I was opening a second club in the town, on my own. There was really only one guy who wanted to train with me, but then my fiancé (Ewelina) started training and one became two, two be came three, and it started to grow. Now we have classes for babies from three years up, kids and teenagers. We’re do ing jiu-jitsu and capoeira for all ages. I guess it’s something good for the com munity.

Can you tell me a bit about jiu-jitsu? Is it similar to other sports?

If you were to describe jiu-jitsu to some one who never saw it, it would be very similar to judo. You have people throw ing each other and putting each other on the floor. The jiu-jitsu match is five min utes long and the goal is to checkmate the opponent, to make your opponent quit, or tap out. So there is a lot of ground work, grappling, and wrestling. It’s an ex

cellent sport and great for self-defence. I can’t recommend jiu-jitsu enough. So there’s no striking?

There is no striking but [in terms of self-defence] there is ducking from striking, turning a strike into a mobilisa tion. It’s about finding locks on the body – the joint moves this way for example (he turns his arm) - figuring out how the anatomy of the body works.

It seems quite technical and intellectu al.

Yes, it’s a very intelligent sport. I trained in weightlifting for a long time, for many years. With time it simply comes down to reps, breaking muscle fibre, and you’re not learning anything. It’s boring. With jiu-jitsu you’re constantly thinking. You’re constantly working your brain.

I compare it to a game of chess. First you figure out how to move the pieces, and then you have to play strategy. Look ahead to the next move and what your opponent can do to you. The moves are complicated and you’re always learning new things. It requires a lot of focus and discipline to get good at it. You don’t get bored with jiu-jitsu.

Is the focus and discipline side of it good for the kids who come to your gym?

Yes, definitely. I find that it is so benefi cial for the kids. The kids want to win but if they want to win, they need to learn the moves. In order to learn the moves, they have to pay attention. So straight away it develops focus and concentra tion and discipline. If they do not pay attention, if they run around the place, they’re going to lose when they spar. It fixes itself. The guys who come in, pay attention, and it makes the others not want to lose so they pay attention and worker hard to learn the moves.

You can see the difference in the kids when they come here. We try to make them comfortable in uncomfortable situ ations so that when the child is out of the jiu-jitsu class and they have a to deal with a hard subject in school, or a bully, they are mentally stronger.

I have witnessed that myself. I worked in security for many years and before I ded icated myself to jiu-jitsu, I found it easy to lose the head. But the more hours I put into the gym and training in jiu-jitsu, the more comfortable I became with frus trating situations. You’re able to remain calm. That’s a benefit of jiu-jitsu.

How important is size in jiu-jitsu?

That’s a tricky one. People say that size doesn’t matter. It definitely does. There’s no doubt about that. But the beauty of

25.11.2022 64
MEDAL: Wilson da Silva came third in the Rome Open before winning the European Championship the very next day.

jiu-jitsu is that once you have the tech nique, you’re able to apply it against bigger guys. You know, the bigger guys have big muscles and bigger egos, but if the small guy trains hard he will be able to move the big guy’s body in a way that works against him. The big guy who goes to the gym, he’s used to pushing the bar this way (straight out), whereas the guy who knows jiu-jitsu knows that if he moves the bigger guys arms here (up wards), he’s not strong anymore. Now the bench press is worth nothing.

Bigger guys think they are unbeatable. The small guys have to work for it. I al ways motivate the guys here in the gym to be humble. You always have to con sider yourself the second best, the guy who wants to be first. The moment you think that you’re bigger and better than everyone else, you stop working.

Tell me about your recent victories in London, Rome and Abu Dhabi. Yeah, so I went to the UK and managed to win four golds at the London Open in the ‘Gi’, ‘A’, ‘No-Gi’ and ‘Absolute’ cate gories. (The ‘Gi’ is a uniform sometimes worn in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. There are cate gories in which the Gi is worn – ‘Gi’ - and categories in which it is not – ‘No-Gi’. The ‘Absolute’ is an open weight division).

Then a couple of weeks ago I travelled to Rome to compete in the European Championship. The day before that event, the Rome Open was on and since I was already there, I signed up for that too. I won the first fight, submitted the guy, but then in the final I lost. It was a good lesson for me. Coming from so many wins, I thought I was going to smash this other guy. I got a bit cocky. Losing settled me down and humbled me a little bit. I went back to my accom modation and analysed my mistakes. I

hoped that the next day I would be able to play a strategy to win.

In the end I managed to win four fights and win the biggest European tourna ment – the No-Gi European Champion ship. It was my dream. I have been there twice before and got knocked out in the quarter-final, and came third in the Gi division. It was really emotional for me.

It was a great achievement. Even now when I’m talking, I feel emotional. I don’t train that much with No-Gi so to come first in Europe, it’s hard to believe.

It’s really hard to run and promote a club and also train and win tournaments, a lot of people say it’s not possible, but I’m putting a lot of hours into this and prov ing that it is possible. When you work so hard, with the help of my training part ners, the results have to come. And you weren’t finished yet. Where did you go next?

Yeah, to finish the story, after winning the European tournament on the Satur day, I flew to Abu Dhabi on Monday for the World Championship. I managed to go there and win three fights before los ing the semi-final after getting beat pret

ty hard. I got my ass kicked by the win ner. Then I had to fight to win the third place [match]. So, even though it’s only third place, it’s third place on the biggest podium in the sport.

Is it normal to compete in this number of events in quick succession?

No. It’s crazy to do so many competi tions in a short period of time. I usually take a month or two months off before

the next competition. It’s expensive too and I must thank Kevin Leahy [from the neighbouring Black Sheep Hostel] for sponsoring me. But after London, I had a feeling that there was no stopping me. I’m healthy. I’m not injured. Now is my moment and I have to take the chance. It was hard enough to believe that I won the European Championship but to go to Abu Dhabi and fight against the best guys in the world… It’s a dream. Well, it’s not a dream now because it happened. It’s a reality.

Is this it for you now? Have you achieved all you want to achieve?

No, there’s more. Much more. I want to win the World Championship in Califor nia next year. For sure I would like to win the European Championship next year –with the Gi.

But my goal is more than just winning championships, it’s to build champions. I want to teach people and share tech niques that are proven to work. As I try to grow the gym, I will continue competing for as long as God blesses me with this health. That’s it.

GYM: Da Silva says he doesn't just want to win championships, he also wants to build champions at his Move ment & Fitness gym in Killarney.

No logic to staging

In last week’s edition, I highlighted the need for all sports aficionados to appre ciate the spirit of volunteerism they en counter in the local sports scene. Unpaid, underestimated and not fully appreciated, these people do this work for the love of their respective sport or club. Still on the topic of sport and mon ey, let us turn this week to the dark side. Money talks. Local sports need spon sorship and it works very well here in Killarney where the various codes are providing a necessary service for the physical, mental, and emotional health of all concerned. The local sponsors promote their services or products in a healthy manner.

Not so on the world stage. Pick any sport you like and judge how many sponsors are in it for altruistic motives. The World Cup on show in Qatar is a timely reminder of the dark side of sport with obsessive greed and the desire for total control the real motivating factors. FIFA, the governing body, is culpable in allowing its standout competition to be compromised and choosing to play it in November in Qatar. The powers that are in Qatar are controlling the compe tition and not FIFA, who have abdicated responsibility.

There is no logic to playing the 2022

World Cup in Qatar. How many people even knew of Qatar before the World Cup controversy erupted? It is over there somewhere in Asia. Yes, Asia is a large continent, and Qatar is on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Pen insula. It is six times smaller than Ire land and ruled by the filthy rich whose wealth arose from oil deposits. Where there are excessively rich peo ple, one can be sure that there are also very poor people. Qatar made what seemed an audacious application to FIFA to host the World Cup. In 2010 Qa tar was awarded the staging of one of the biggest sporting occasions in world sports. That is 12 years ago.

Grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre, and unprecedented – GUBU - were the words of Charlie Haughey and they are very relevant to cover the allegations of bribery and corruption aimed at the FIFA officials.

Even the former head of FIFA called the selection of Qatar a mistake. "It was a bad choice. And I was responsible for that as president at the time," said Sepp Blatter, whose term as FIFA administra tor ended in 2015.

Then and now allegations of bribery and corruption on a grand scale emerged. Qatar hadn’t the infrastructure to ac

commodate the supporters who are attending the World Cup. That was how it was in 2010. Migrant workers were brought from impoverished countries to build the necessary infrastructure and paid a miserly dollar an hour, where Health & Safety was a low priority.

In Qatar, basic human rights are ig nored, members of the LGBTQ+ com munity are ill-treated, and homosexu ality is criminalised. Women are treated very unfairly.

That and more, and the root of it all is greed, power, and control. Greed and money mania creates an explosive cocktail of them versus us.

Talking of greed look no further than the weekly pay for elite soccer players. Ronaldo has hardly been out of the news in recent weeks following his spat with his club Manchester United and his revelations in a recent interview.

His weekly wage is in excess of £500,000 (and that is sterling by the way). No one is worth that kind of money. Is it any wonder that some such soccer players are so unbalanced and maladjusted to life?

Then there is the controversy in pro fessional golf, with the Saudi-backed LIV series luring golfers such as Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Bub

ba Watson, Dustin Johnson, and others away from the PGA. At LIV, a winner can walk away with $20 million dollars. Oil money.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have led the opposition to the Greg Norman-led LIV golf extravaganza.

Money also talks in the GAA. Just a few weeks ago the Munster v South Afri ca rugby game was played at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. 42,000 spectators attended the sacred Cork GAA venue on a miser ably wet midweek night. And the ques tion is, why? What’s in it for you and for me?

There is no suggestion about the dark side of money in this case, rather Mun ster wanted a venue that could cater for such a large attendance and Páirc Uí Chaoímh needed the money to chip away at that dreadful overspend in dur ing its revamp.

That rugby game has lowered the €29 million overspend. Mind you, a substan tial number of Cork GAA supporters were not happy to see the foreign game allowed to go ahead. Unfortunately, residues of the Ban still resonate in some quarters.

In early May 2022, I highlighted the fact that Kevin O’Donovan, Cork GAA CEO, refused permission for the Cork senior

football and hurling teams to train on the sacred soil as they prepared for their big championship games. His an swer was that Man Utd did not train in Old Trafford.

The only concession he allowed even tually was that on the week of the championship game the teams were allowed onto the sacred sod just once for a puck/kick around. The Ed Sheeran concerts cost the Cork hurlers home ad vantage in their round 3 Munster Cham pionship game against Clare. The Kerry v Cork football championship game was moved to Páirc Uí Rinn.

The CEO’s job is to reduce the debt which stood at €29 million as of last September. Almost €22 million is owed to the Bank of Ireland and the rest is owed to Croke Park.

Cork GAA’s Sacred Space comes at a huge price and the CEO is looking at all

avenues of revenue to clear the debt.

It is all above board and is diametrically opposed to the shenanigans at Qatar. The rugby match was a wonderful oc casion.

Will the day come when we will see a rugby or soccer game at the Fitzgerald Stadium? Wouldn’t that be very wel come?

Incoming Taoiseach Leo Varadkar visit ed the stadium during the summer and supported the local committee’s bid for public funds to bring the grounds up to modern spec.

Tralee or Killarney venues may well be needed by Kerry soccer in the future. I was delighted to discover that the FAI has granted Kerry permission to enter the League of Ireland First Division. Wouldn’t the late Pádraig Hartnett have been so happy with that go-ahead move for soccer in Kerry?

I welcome that progressive move too, an incentive for the regular local players to get on that new Kerry soccer team. The home venue will be Mounthawk Park. That can cater for a maximum at tendance of 1,200 people and will suf fice for some time.

If Kerry becomes successful, they may well call on the GAA in Killarney or Tralee. I hope they will get a positive welcome.

ALL-STAR KAYLEIGH

Congratulations to the five Kerry play ers chosen as TG4 All-Stars: Kayleigh Cronin, Aishling O’Connell, Cáit Lynch and Niamh Carmody.

Also that great veteran Louise Ní Mhu ircheartaigh who won her third All-Star. Dr Crokes player Cronin had a magnif icent year at full back. Powerful and consistent displays all season earned Kayleigh her award.

It has been a great year for Dr Crokes players, Gavin White and Kayleigh Cronin, both All-Stars.

DONIE O’SULLIVAN

Liam Hayes, the former Meath All-Ire land-winning midfielder will launch ‘Donie O’Sullivan: A Footballer, Once at the Spa clubhouse tonight (Friday) at 7.30pm.

Donie was Kerry’s first All-Star in 1971, the inaugural year of the awards. The book recognises the contribution of this great Spa, Kerry, and East Kerry

player. Fellow Spa club man, that fine sports journalist Jimmy Darcy O’Sulli van, wrote the story of this Kerry and Spa legend.

Winner of four All-Irelands, I will never forget the distance Donie drove the kickout, especially in the sixties when the old ball was in use. That was much heavier than the present ball and it was heavier still in wet conditions. It didn’t matter to Donie who was famous for his turbo-charged dead ball kick.

O’DONOGHUE CUP

Michael O’Mahony, the ever-helpful PRO of the East Kerry Board, informs me that the semi-finals for the O’Dono ghue Cup are fixed for December 3/4. The two outstanding quarter-finals will go ahead on Sunday next November 27 at the same time 12 noon. Gneeveguilla v Glenflesk in Gneeveguilla and Spa v Listry in Tullig. Results will be finalised on the day.

I wish the best of luck to Rathmore (Intermediate v Kanturk) and Fossa (Junior v Castlemahon) - both away to morrow (Saturday) - in their respective Munster Club competitions.

KERRY MEDAL CEREMONY

The victorious Kerry All-Ireland winning team of 2022 will be presented with their Celtic Crosses at a special ceremo ny at the Great Southern Hotel Killarney tonight (Friday).

Credit to the lads, they never panicked and continued playing their football in trying conditions and got their reward with goals from Captain Nathan Cronin and Jack Rudden. 2-1 at half time. After

the break we continued to dominate and scored a 3rd from Fionn Daly which his running had deserved. Luke Doolan and Nathan rounded off the scoring. Credit to all 13 players who stuck to their task and were a credit to the club. Thanks to Connolly Celtic for a sporting game.

SPORT NOTES

Shamrocks 2-13. We led 1-10 to 1-06 at the interval but faced a tough battle in the second half against a strong wind. Kevin Landers scored our only goal of the game with a fantastic close-range effort in the opening 30 minutes.
