Editor’s View
Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking
A Child’s Needs Should Not Be Decided By Ticking Boxes WHAT kind of a society do we live in that children with unique needs can be seen as just a number? A Killarney father contacted Killarney Advertiser on Thursday evening to express his upset and anger after applying for respite care for his child. Little Alexis O’Mahony, 16 months, has a diagnosis of pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, ventriculomegaly, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, microcephaly, severe global developmental delay, poor muscle tone, two dislocated hips and poor feeding, said her dad Steve O’Mahony. But she does not qualify for even the minimal of respite services, he added. After applying to the Health Service Executive, Steve said he was told Alexis already receives respite thanks to the Jack and Jill Foundation. “We receive ten hours a week, maybe it’s too much, maybe we
should even cut back? I shouldn’t be surprised, it’s not the first time the HSE rely on charities to pick up the slack and do their work for them,” he said. Of the respite forum that assessed Alexis’s case, he added: “Let’s call a spade a spade here. There is no way in hell anyone on that forum understands Alexis’s daily needs, not to mind her primary medical condition.” Steve noted: “All children with disabilities have unique needs independent of each other that cannot be decided on by ticking boxes around a table.” He added: “In the meantime I will continue to help my daughter with her 24-hour care needs right here in the family home where she feels love and is included as a valuable and essential member of the household. Not a number in a system. If we don’t get the help we ask for so be it, we will continue on.”

Killarney Homes Raided In Crime Spree
Where Better Than Killarney For Tourism College? AS THOUSANDS of students deliberate their first round offers from the Central Application Office (CAO), the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) is encouraging young people in Kerry to consider a career in tourism. Hospitality and tourism businesses around the country are looking to recruit over 6,000 entry-level employees each year across all areas of their operations. Patrick O’Donoghue, chair of the Kerry branch of the IHF, said: “Tourism is Ireland’s largest indigenous industry,
providing employment in every county in Ireland including Kerry. It offers thousands of opportunities for young people interested in pursuing a career in tourism with enormous potential for professional development and advancement.” And where better to locate a goldstandard college than in Killarney? St Finan’s Hospital would be the ideal building for a state-of-the-art centre of this kind, as Killarney Advertiser columnist Anne Lucey suggested recently.
A GANG from outside of Kerry is believed to be behind a spate of burglaries across Kerry and west Cork last week during which cash and jewellery was stolen. Gardaí are seeking information on a darkcoloured Volkswagen Golf in which the thieves are believed to have been travelling. Homes in Killarney as well as Kenmare, Kilgarvan, Tralee and Castleisland were targeted in the crime spree last Thursday and Friday. Two residences in Kilgarvan and one in Kenmare were burgled. Meanwhile, thieves struck six houses in Killarney, including in Flesk Grove, Muckross Grove and in Woodlawn Park on Friday morning. The robberies commenced in the
west Cork area on Thursday and Gardaí believe the culprits travelled towards Kilgarvan and Kenmare and onwards to Killarney. A number of robberies were committed in Tralee and in west Kerry. It is believed the same gang is responsible for all of the raids. All of the houses were unoccupied at the time. Gardaí are appealing for information linked to the dark-coloured Volkswagen Golf believed to be associated with the crimes. It is believed the gang stayed overnight locally on the Thursday night so any member of the public or anyone in the accommodation/hospitality industry who may be able to help enquiries is encouraged to contact Killarney Gardaí on 064-6631222.

Kerry Way Ultra
Beauty & Brutality DESCRIBED by its organisers as “2000km of sheer brutality and beauty”, the Kerry Way Ultra was launched this week by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin. The daunting 40-hour non-stop ultra-marathon run traverses the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Iveragh Peninsula, stretching along the Wild Atlantic Way, along ancient trails and old roads and coastal cliffs. The race starts on Friday morning, September 1, at 6am from Randles Broth-
ers, Muckross Road, Killarney. The nonstop event proceeds through Killarney National Park, Black Valley, Glencar, to Glenbeigh, Foilmore, Mastergeeha, Waterville, Caherdaniel, Sneem, Kenmare, along the Old Kenmare Road, before returning to Killarney. The event has been awarded the highest number of qualification points by The Ultra Tour du Mont Blanc (www.ultratrailmb.com). A second race, the Kerry Way Ultralite, runs concurrently with the Minister of State Brendan Griffin with Kerry Way Ultra race director Eileen Kerry Way Ultra, starting at Sneem on Daly, and ultra runners Kevin Leahy, Killarney, and Eddie Berminghman, the Saturday. Colm Cooper Launches Catwalk Show FASHIONISTAS will be to the fore as the Killarney Branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation hosts its annual Models in Recovery catwalk show on Tuesday, September 5. GAA legend Colm Cooper was on hand to launch the event this
week and it will take place in the INEC at 7.30pm sharp. “Our fashion show has been a great success since it was first staged three years ago and is our biggest annual fundraiser locally. There are few families nowadays that are not affected by cancer or
other life limiting illnesses,” said Killarney Hospice chairman Pat Doolan. TV3 personality Noel Cunningham will be MC. “Our courageous models, all cancer survivors, lend their own support by bringing a large following with them,” said Pat.
THE body of a man was found on Mount Brandon on Wednesday. A search had been underway in west Kerry for a hillwalker who had been climbing Mount Brandon. The climber, aged in his 60s and from the UK, was reported missing when he failed to return to his car the previous evening. He set out for his walk alone at around 11am and his concerned wife contacted Kerry Mountain Rescue when she didn’t hear from him after 3pm. Members of Kerry Mountain Rescue and the Dingle Coastguard initiated a search operation which was joined by the Shannon-based rescue helicopter R115.
Brendan’s Rose Voyage SHARING the stage with the likes of Shane Filan and Daniel O’Donnell is all in a night’s work for talented Beaufort native Brendan O’Connor. Brendan, who performed with the former Westlife star in Tralee on Tuesday night, has the distinction of being the longest-serving individual musician to entertain at the Rose of Tralee International Festival television selection. Brendan, of Little Dylan Studios, Faha, and also a member of well-known band Truly Diverse, first got the call to the Dome 21 years ago, when he was contacted by the festival’s musical director
Ollie Hennessy. “I look forward to taking part every year. The RTÉ crew are absolutely lovely to work with. I started off just playing the accordion on the show but now I also play whistles, bodhrán, percussion and even harmonica,” said Brendan. Offaly Rose Jennifer Byrne made history when she was crowned 2017 International Rose of Tralee on Tuesday. The junior doctor’s win marked the first time in the festival’s 59 years that “the Faithful County” has clinched the title. Kerry Rose Breda O’Mahony impressed on Tuesday when she treated host Daithi to a cookery lesson on stage.

Tripping The Light Fantastic THE All Ireland Fleadh proved a tremendous success for the Killarney and Kilcummin branches of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCE) last weekend. Killarney CCE saw their dancers take to the stage on Friday in The West County Hotel in Ennis, Co Clare. They brought home four first place titles and three thirds in set dancing, along with two firsts and one second in céilí dancing. They thanked their dancing coaches, Triona and Mairead Mangan and Maureen Hegarty, as well as their former dancing coach, Ann Mangan, who told Killarney Advertiser that Ennis has been the best venue for set and céilí dancing in the fleadh in recent years as both competitions were held in the same venue. “The students had been practising tirelessly for months, both day and night for the fleadh, which begins in Kerry in May each year,” said Ann. Chris Carey and Sean Moynihan, both dancers in the mixed set that won the under-18 competition, said the fleadh was “great craic and very enjoyable”, while Shona Murphy and Karis Kaschan, members of the same set, said they really enjoyed their fleadh experience and described the support they received from their families, coaches and supporters as

Slow Is Not Always Safe PERFORMING our routine A to B daily journeys should be that, routine. However this wasn’t the case for one reader on a routine journey from Glenflesk to Killarney recently. Our reader joined a convoy led by a car doing anything from 40 to 80kph on this major route with ample hard shoulder available. However this driver was indecisive, driving half in and half out on the hard shoulder and generally not aware of the very long line of traffic building behind. Some drivers attempted to pass and some drivers, who weren’t tailgating, found themselves braking hard. The latter ended up tailgating – not by choice – and in a very dangerous convoy of increasingly frustrated drivers. I share our reader’s frustration created by this lead car showing little or no regard for other road users. Given the route, this driver is driving “without due care and attention” – an action in my opinion that should attract the attention of our police force. “What’s the rush?” I hear you say. I agree, but that may be the sentiment of most in the convoy. However you only need one frustrated driver to create an accident.
To clear up any confusion, this is not a speed issue – it is a common courtesy and safety issue. I think it is quite reasonable to expect a slower car to give way where possible, which is simple courtesy. As for the safety issue, that is another story. Our reader is in a convoy respectfully waiting for cars in the head of the
queue, one by one, to start overtaking. However this doesn’t happen. Our reader now sees tension build in the drivers around him, tailgating and weaving in and out, weighing up their level of bravery at overtaking a long line of cars. Which one is going to take the bravery pill and go for it? And our reader is an unwilling participant to a potential pile-up by the
Geraldine & Sheila Join Musical Team KILLARNEY SCHOOL OF MUSIC has welcomed Geraldine Brosnan and Sheila O’Donoghue to its team of teachers. Sheila hails from a stronghold of Irish music in Glenflesk, and has been steeped in music and song from a very young age. Sheila is an accomplished accordionist (Grade 8) and wonderful folk singer, with many years of live performance experience. Sheila will be teaching button accordion and traditional folk singing, and teaming up with Padraig Buckley to mentor the school’s traditional performance group. Geraldine, an accomplished flute, whistle and concertina player, has a passion for traditional music sessions.
Geraldine Brosnan.
To help give musicians the confidence to join sessions, Geraldine will be running a one-hour group class that will cover all aspects of session playing. “This will include preparing appropriate sets of tunes, practice at playing with others, timing in a session, ses-

sion etiquette, and generally enjoying the craic - which is what a session is about at the end of the day!” said Tadhg Buckley of Killarney School of Music. “We are all delighted to have them both on-board.”
Patrick Finally Makes The Screen THE smash-hit play Patrick was filmed live at the INEC over two shows on May 11 and close on 10,000 people have seen the production. The story of Rathmore man and 1916 hero Patrick O’Connor was brought to the stage by author and journalist Aidan O’Connor. The official DVD is now on sale at
www.patrick1916.com The DVD was professionally filmed by Digibuzz and captures the power and emotion of Patrick O’Connor’s story. “It’s unfortunate that the production was just too large to tour at outside venues but hopefully the DVD will be another way of bringing his story to a wider audience,” said Aidan O’Connor.
virtual fact that he is in this queue. All the while the slow driver up front is completely oblivious to the tension brewing behind. Slow drivers are not an issue once they know that their driving style could potentially obstruct the path of other road users and take the appropriate action and give way. However in this case the lead driver is oblivious to the events behind so in my opinion the responsibility passes to the next following car to take action. If that car doesn’t want to overtake than leave a suitable gap to the car in front and where possible give way so the following car can overtake. One by one the convoy is reduced and the frustrated driver further back should be satisfied that eventually their turn will come. Disaster averted by common courtesy and dare I say it – common-sense. When we get into our high tech airbag-equipped cocoon we feel safe but removed from what is around us. However that is no excuse for what are quite simply bad road manners. Please be aware of other road users – you are not the only person on the road.

Liebherr Recruiting Apprentices LIEBHERR CONTAINER CRANES has announced its apprenticeship recruitment for 2018. Liebherr in Killarney has a long tradition of apprentice training, stretching back as far as 1959, and has trained over 1000 apprentices to date. The apprentice training model combines both a practical and theoretical education, delivered with the cooperation of Solas, the State body with responsibility for training and further education. Since 2015, Liebherr offers an enhanced apprentice programme in collaboration with the Institute of
Technology Tralee (ITT). Now all apprentices complete a Higher Certificate in Engineering in parallel with completing their apprenticeship. Liebherr Container Cranes Director Pat O’Leary said: “In effect Liebherr is now offering academic scholarships to our apprentices. This is a significant enhancement to the traditional apprenticeship programme and is a fantastic opportunity for the successful applicants. The apprentice can now train to the level of a highly qualified professional engineer with enhanced skills on an Earn and Learn basis. It
provides the qualifying applicants with additional and better employment opportunities.” As part of a continued investment in people and technology, Liebherr recently invested over €250,000 in the expansion and upgrading of its apprentice training facilities. The investment almost doubles in size the existing apprentice training school in Liebherr Container Cranes. Apprenticeships are offered in three different fields: electrical, mechanical automation and maintenance fitter (MAMF); and metal fabrication.
Rugby
Rugby Club Lines Out For Family Fun Day ALL are invited to Killarney Rugby Football Club’s family fun day on Saturday, September 9, at the club’s fantastic facility at Aghadoe, its new home and base for the past two seasons. Killarney Rugby Club’s minis return to training from September 2 and coordinator Liam Murphy is looking forward to another bumper year for the club’s youngest players. “We welcome children aged between 5 and 11 to minis training where the focus is on learning the game through fun and inclusiveness,” said Liam. Every child gets to play rugby and make friends and the club’s coaches are highly experienced having completed Munster-approved coaching courses and first aid courses last season. “We also have a flourishing girls section in the club under female liaison officer Denise Treacy and with the women’s world cup receiving
much focus, would encourage any girls interested in playing rugby to give it a try,” said Liam. The club’s youth section under coordinator and club chairman Paul Murphy – consisting of U14, U16 and U16 squads – returns to training in early September. “Last season our U14s won the West Munster Cup and League double and will look for more success this season,” said Liam. “Our U16s and U18s had great seasons last season and will continue to flourish into the season ahead.” Killarney Rugby Club’s seniors, under club captain Ger Moynihan, have returned to preseason training and are looking forward to life in Division 2 of the Munster Junior League, following on from a hugely successful season last season, which saw the lads win promotion and win the Martin O’Sullivan and Galwey/ Foley Cup double. At the upcoming fun day on Sep-
tember 9, tag rugby matches will be on offer for younger guests and all the brothers and sisters are invited to get involved and have fun. “Our older players will play touch/tag rugby and this is open to all, experience not required,” said Liam. Other family games will include a tug of war as well rugby footgolf and a rugby darts challenge. Not only that but there will be a full barbecue.
To apply for these roles, applicants should send a CV, a copy of Leaving and Junior Certificate results and a cover letter specifying the role that you are interested in and why to apprenticerecruit@liebherr.com Any further documents such as training certificates, references, project details and awards should also be included. The closing date for receipt of completed applications is Friday, September 8. 2017. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on January 1, 2018.

Workmen’s Win On The Water
KERRY surpassed themselves once again at this year’s Coastal Rowing Championships, which were held at the Lakeside Centre, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, at the weekend. It was the women of Workmen’s Rowing Club that shone bright gold on the water, winning first place in the senior, intermediate race and the under-18 ladies races. This was a dream come true for trainer and cox Mikey Joe Burns. The winning crews included Siobhan Burns, Ciara Moynihan, Ciara Brown, Annie O’Donoghue, and second cox Michael O’Donoghue. Other Kerry clubs that sparkled were Callinafercy Rowing Club, Killorglin, who took gold in the girls under-16 race, silver in the under-18 ladies senior final, bronze in the under-18 event and silver in the under-21 race. The popular Cromane Rowing Club took gold and silver in the heritage boat finals on the Friday evening. Entertainment Bake Off Is Back
The BBC series announced it was moving to Channel 4 in September, after Love Productions agreed a three-year £75 million deal with the rival broadcasters. Hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins and master baker Mary Berry did not sign on to the revamp. However Paul Hollywood opted to stay and joins Prue Leith on the new judging panel, alongside Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig as hosts The 2017 series will see a yoga-loving health inspector, a cancer survivor, a balding banker and the oldest contestant to date, at 71, battle against eight others for the star baker title. This year’s GBBO, which has sealed seven-figure sponsorship deals with Lyle’s Golden Syrup and Dr Oetker, is set to have four breaks lasting nearly 17 minutes – longer than any show in Channel 4 history Out of the 75 minute air time, viewers will only witness 58 minutes and 18 seconds of the show - but show execs are still hoping to draw in more than 8 million viewers. The revamped Bake Off returns to screens on Tuesday August 29 at 8pm on Channel 4.

Daniel & Majella O’Donnell Have Room to Improve WE WERE ALL left sorely disappointed when Room to Improve was cut short last season with little explanation. We had a little guess at what the problem was, but it has yet to be cleared up by RTÉ. They could be making it up to us next season by the inclusion of a celebrity project in next year’s season. It’ll be none other than Daniel and Majella O’Donnell. Beautiful. According to The Sunday World, Daniel and Majella went to Der-
mot to discuss remodelling their home in Meenbanad, Co. Donegal. At least they’ve got their holiday home in Tenerife to stay in while all of the dirty work is done. While visiting a homes exhibition, Majella met Dermot and asked if he’d come to Donegal to see the house. Seeing how much of a laugh the couple were on their B&B Road Trip series, it would be impossi-

ble to decline. Majella told The Sunday World “Dermot then asked if we’d do the show. We weren’t thinking about doing that show, but now we’re doing it, it’s a much bigger job than we could have done ourselves.” As always, Dermot wants to focus on the landscape around the property, and luckily he’s working with very scenic surroundings in Donegal. Daniel commented that there has been a “wee bit of drama” already. Sure it wouldn’t be Room to Improve if there wasn’t. Sounds like Dermot. Daniel added that he was a bit nervous about the time constraints on the project. This is going to make for some really, really good Irish TV. Roll on January.

Kerry Fans
Hurricane Gert Fails To Deter Fans Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Don MacMonagle AS THE tail end of Hurricane Gert battered Ireland with torrential rain, intrepid Kerry fans streamed into Croke Park. Despite the weather warning – issued for 19 counties – these diehard supporters were determined to see things through and were rewarded with exciting football displays as the Kerry minors triumphed over Cavan and our seniors set a second date after drawing with Mayo in an ab-
solutely nail-biting game. Downpours and spot flooding hit Dublin as well as all of Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Clare and north Tipperary. The deluge saw some 5mm rain fall in Kerry in just 15 minutes. As one supporter tweeted: “Glad to be watching @TheSundayGame from home. It’s a miserable day in #Dublin.”

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around Opinion
Is anyone else tired of seeing clichéd images of counties outside of Dublin, asks Eve Kelliher
Simply Beyond The Pale WHY does our national broadcaster insist on casting counties outside the Pale as misty, sepia-tinted lands boasting a population with one foot in the 1940s? This was brought home to viewers yet again at the start of RTÉ’s Sunday Game Live at the weekend. It was pretty cringe-making. Before a ball was kicked in the All-Ireland senior football championship semi-final, we were “treated” to a montage of footage representing Kerry and Mayo. While beautifully shot and accompanied by a flowing poetic narrative, this was a typically patronising “big city” take on the two sporting strongholds. “Football The Wild Atlantic Way” was one title that floated across the screen as the film progressed Wild is right. It made the denizens of both Kerry and Mayo look like they subsisted in a parallel universe where time had stood still. To give you an idea, grazing livestock starred in one lingering early frame. Paddywhackery worthy of Hollywood at its worst was the order of the day as both counties were depicted as twee backwaters filled with flat-cap wearers whose prime mode of transport was a bog-pony drawn cart, a high nelly, a jaunting car or a currach. Once I tore my horrified eyes away from the screen I half expected to encounter the Bull McCabe perched next to me on the couch
RTE is selling us dated images of Kerry and Mayo. Is the equivalent image of Dublin’s Moore Street above one it would use to portray the capital to Ireland and the world?
demanding the remote control. But there was no point in changing the channel. What was seen couldn’t be unseen. Granted, there is a time and a place for nostalgia but wouldn’t it be nice to see a few less hackneyed images of counties that happen not to be Dublin? In all seriousness, have the doyens of Donnybrook ever actually dared to venture beyond the Red Cow roundabout? When the boys in blue are lining out in Croke Park, RTÉ invariably lays on much slicker introductory footage. Why?
An image from the footage shown on RTÉ’s Sunday Game Live prior to Kerry-Mayo game.
Trump Corner
Are We Freaked Out Yet? AS DONAL TRUMP went off-script in a public meltdown this week, the world watched in horror. This is the man with his finger n the fabled big red button. There can’t be one amongst us who wouldn’t agree with former US intelligence chief James Clapper’s comment that the “disturbing” speech in Arizona only underlines the fact that Trump’s access to nuclear codes is “pretty damn scary”. You can see why concern at his temperament is behind efforts in Congress to bar him from carrying out a nuclear strike without lawmakers’ say-so. “Freaked out yet?” asked congressman Ted Lieu, one of the bill’s sponsors, after Trump lashed out at his enemies and most of the me-
dia before a cheering crowd in Arizona. Frighteningly, President Trump believes the biggest victim in the Charlottesville violence last weekend was, in fact, himself. Let’s not forget that that the clash between white supremacists and counter protesters left one woman dead. Strolling on stage at the Phoenix Convention Center, the US President went off-script as he ranted about his treatment at the hands of the media. The world watched as Trump offloaded in this hour-long public venting. “What happened in Charlottesville strikes at the core of America,” he said, blaming the “thugs” and the “dishonest media” for the violence in Virginia.

Let’s Sort Out Our Man Charged With Murder Flooding Problem Of Nicola Collins In Cork A MAN appeared in Cork District Court charged with the murder of a mother of three who was found with serious head injuries in Cork city earlier this year. Cathal O’Sullivan, from Popham’s Road, Farranree in Cork, was charged with the murder of Nicola Collins at that address on March 27, reports RTE. Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution Detective Sergeant Kieran O’Sullivan told the court that he arrest-
ed Mr O’Sullivan outside Mayfield Garda Station, where he charged him with the offence. Mr O’Sullivan replied “not guilty” when the charge was put to him after caution. Judge David Waters remanded Mr O’Sullivan in custody to appear again at Cork District Court on August 30. Ms Collins, 38, was found with head and neck injuries in a flat on Popham’s Road on Cork’s northside early on March 27. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Widower Of Woman Killed By Cyclist Calls For Change In Law Code red: Glenflesk farmer Johnny O’Brien heading back to his flooded house after rescuing his sheep and guiding them to higher ground during Storm Desmond in 2015. Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan
“IS FLOODING something we are always going to have to dread?” That was the question asked early last year by a Glenflesk resident in the wake of Storm Desmond which had devastated homes in the area in late 2015. Serious questions must be asked again this week following the trail of destruction left by heavy rain as severe floods hit Donegal. As we all know, Kerry has felt the lash of violent storms in recent years, but it is chilling to see that not much seems to have changed. Images of collapsed roads and bridges, washed-away cars,
and destroyed homes and business premises this week send a chill down the spine. Recent years have also seen areas across Kerry, such as Glenflesk, Beaufort and Fossa, count the cost of these deluges. There have been many calls for action in the wake of flood damage in Kerry. Why should people’s lives be affected in this trauamtic way? A new approach is needed to deal with extreme weather conditions. Surely the Government can come up with a co-ordinated strategy to manage such situations?
THE husband of a woman who died after she was struck by a cyclist later convicted of causing her bodily harm has called for changes to the law to prevent similar tragedies from happening again. Kim Briggs, a mother of two, died in hospital a week after Charlie Alliston collided with her on his fixed-gear bike, which illegally had no front brake, in east London. Alliston, 20, who is facing jail after being convicted on Wednesday of causing bodily harm by “wanton and furious driving”, an offence under a piece of 19th-century legislation, but he was cleared of the more serious offence of manslaughter. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Matthew Briggs, Briggs’s husband, said he was calling for cycling to be incorporated into the Road Traffic Act to
Mystery Surrounds Identity of Bodies Found in Glacier on Europe’s Highest Mountain MYSTERY surrounds the identity of bodies found in a melting glacier on Europe’s highest mountain. Rescuers were working yesterday on the Mont Blanc mountain range to recover three bodies spotted by a French climber on Wednesday. Mountain rescue teams made up of Italian emergency services are seeking to recover the bodies from a glacier at around
7,800ft in altitude in the area of the Miage mountain peak, an Italian official told Newsweek. Once recovered, the bodies will be transferred to the town of Courmayeur, in Italy’s northwestern region of Valle d’Aosta, for identification. Little is known about the bodies, their condition or even sex, but a preliminary evaluation suggests they were climbers who went missing in the 1990s.

allow offences of death by dangerous cycling and death by careless cycling to be considered. “In that sense it’s not so much a new law as just bringing the current law up to date,” he said. Briggs said his campaign for a change in the law was not “witch-hunt against cyclists”, adding that he had lived in London for 27 years and cycled himself. Alliston was released on bail. He will be sentenced on September 18. The judge, Wendy Thomas, warned he faced a custodial sentence but said it was not a certainty until she had heard mitigation at the sentencing hearing. She added: “I have not seen one iota of remorse from Mr Alliston at all at any stage.”
Wedding of the Week
From Glasgow To Killarney For Ciara & Stewart
BRIDE and groom Ciara Gill and Stewart Smith travelled from Scotland to the bride’s native Killarney to celebrate their big day. The couple met in August 2009 when working at La Bonne Auberge restaurant in Glasgow and got engaged in the Algarve in Portugal in October 2015. Stewart popped the question on a clifftop in Praia de Falesia following their friends’ wedding. Ciara and Stewart, from Glasgow, were wed in St Mary’s Cathedral recently by Fr Niall Howard and held their reception in The Brehon. Helping them celebrate their big day were the bride’s parents Joan and Pat Gill and the groom’s mother and father Elizabeth and Martin Smith along with Ciara’s grandmother Annie Gill. Ciara’s friends Kate O’Sullivan, Aoife Sheahan, Siobhann Caulfield and Louise Cagney were her bridesmaids while Stewart’s friends Russell Leslie and Bruce Nicoll were best men with the bride’s brothers Shane, Eoghan and Rian Gill as groomsmen. The groom’s niece Kitty Smith was flower girl. The bridal hair and makeup looks were by Fossa Hair Salon and Ciara looked stunning in an Enzoani wedding dress. Photographer Pauline Dennigan and videographer John Barry captured the occasion on camera. The newlyweds travelled to Mauritius for their honeymoon. Ciara is a clinical psychologist and Stewart is a chartered accountant and the newlyweds will reside in Glasgow.

Reviewed: The Last Tudor by Philippa Gregory EVERYONE who studied the Tudors knows the fate of Lady Jane Grey, Queen of England for just nine days before going to the executioner’s block in 1533. The Last Tudor unveils what happened to Lady Jane Grey’s younger sisters Katherine and Mary. But few know what happened to her younger sisters Katherine and Mary, who also faced imprisonment and death sentences for treason. In her 15th novel from the bestselling Plantagenet and Tudor series which includes The Other Boleyn Girl and
The White Queen, Philippa Gregory turns her attention to the tragic fate of the three Grey sisters. The tale is divided into three parts, each narrated by one of the sisters. The story begins with 16-year-old Jane, forced to take the throne by her father Henry Grey and his co-conspirators, ahead of the deceased King Edward VI’s half-sister Mary. Philippa Gregory has a way of breathing life into historical figures, and this is a must-read for fans of the Tudor saga.

Welcome
A
very special thanks to Kadri for stepping in as editor for Home & Living last month, she did an amazing job. I was lucky enough to get to go on a very epic holiday, driving across some of Europe. We clocked up 6842km, taking in Wales, England, France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland. It was a feast for the eyes the countryside was truly awe-inspiring, driving through all those alpine passes with picture perfect villages and views to make your jaw drop, but my favourite places were cities, the architecture, in particular the doors, I have to admit I have a bit of a door fetish! It was great to get home though – my other half would keep driving, and while I like travelling, I am a bit of a home bird, and love to get home to my own space, and start on my next project! I am replacing my front door this year so every picture I can find will be looked at until I've whittled it down to one, may take some time! Have you a project going on in your home? We'd love to hear how it's going, or better still send some pics! We are looking at master bedrooms this month, we've picked our favourite trends and dream bedrooms to inspire you.

BEDROOM DREAMS
N THE hunt for gorgeous bedroom ideas? We spend around one third of our lives in bed, so it seems only fitting that our bedroom should be as beautiful as possible. This is often forgotten as we are all tempted to spend our budget on the more viewed part of our homes. With the ever-increasing pace of our lives, it's even more important to have a room where we can escape daily pressures and retreat to sleep and regenerate. Being the most private and personal room in a home means your bedroom decor can be as wild and wonderful or as calm and neutral as your taste decides, it’s a chance to really reflect your individual style and create a look you absolutely love. Whether you dream of restful Nordic chic or a luxurious hotel style, we have searched for our favourites. We hope will give you some inspiration the perfect look for you. If you’re still unsure what style to choose, here's a tip from a top designer – go through your old house magazines and tear out all the bedroom pictures you love, or try Pinterest and pin you favourites when you go through your choices. You'll see there's probably a similar style running through all of them, you've found your style! Don't worry if they're all completely different – you have eclectic taste, where it's a little harder to achieve. Don't mix too many woods or colours and start with one thing you really love like a bed, print or fabric and work from that.
Bedroom: Trends INDIGO navy and blue are really trending now as seen on Zara Home. What’s great is they can be used as accent colours and do really lift a room. Grey is still the go-to neutral wall colour for bedrooms but we are seeing accent colours such as yellow and blue – and of course pink is still a great choice to bring in a warm touch. My favourite grey at the moment is Charleston grey from Farrow and Ball. The four-poster bed has always been a staple in the colonial look favoured by a lot of American designers, but it's sneaking back in here too – a simple pared-back version works in most bedrooms. Even without dressing with curtains a four-poster gives you a feeling of being cocooned which leads to a great night’s sleep. Small chests of drawers instead of bedside lockers is a trend I love. Not only does it enhance your bed, but it gives extra storage and keeps the clutter on bedside tales to a minimum. If you’re short on space, small round side tables are also a big trend. Retro furniture is always a great choice for living rooms. We are seeing a lot more bedrooms with retro pieces. Keep everything else in your room simple to keep this look modern.
Sweet: Ensuites THE most important aspects of an ensuite is creating a space that’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Establishing a relaxed, calm atmosphere is a key component to a successful ensuite. Space isn’t something most of us have in abundance for an ensuite. Therefore, to create the illusion of space, it is best to use a single colour scheme in white, off-white or neutral colours and to make use of mirrors spotlights wherever possible. A large mirror covering one wall can instantly create the feeling of space, whilst a window can bring in all-important natural light. Alternatively, using large tiles on the floor or wall can make a small room seem larger. Furthermore, using the same flooring throughout your ensuite – making it a wet room – can also add perceived space. Surround your shower in frameless glass to complete the look or go for McElligotts glass shower. You can add contrast and colour with your sink unit by using a colour or wood look for the cabinet, there are some amazing choices out there. Using a wall-hung toilet and sink allows you to set a premium presentation and give you the visual perception of more space (with less clutter in the room) with the added bonus of easy cleaning! Choosing a sink with storage-like drawers or a press underneath is great for all that clutter, as a lot of ensuites will not have room for a stand-alone press. Of course if space is not an issue for you, the sky’s the limit. I love the wave bath from Corcoran’s – a girl can dream! We adore the Marmara bathroom wall and floor tiles from National Tile. They’re beige and grey – what’s not to love? McElligotts

IN THE FRAME WE ALL have them – well, most of us apart from the very organised – the black bag full of clothes to take to the charity shop, the bottles to take to the bottle bank. They get to the utility room or even the back of the car, but never quite make it to where they should go. For me it's those pieces for framing I've picked them up on holidays or in that cute art shop, with the greatest of intentions, to get them framed to grace my walls. Some I've had for years but something else always gets in the way! So after holidays this year (and buying yet another little watercolour in Venice!) I made a concerted effort to do something about it, and finally got my favourite piece framed. That niggling feeling I used to get every time I looked up at the blank space this piece had been bought for has gone, and I am secretly thrilled with myself. Now I've just got to get the others framed! Oh and get to the charity shop and bottle bank and I'll be laughing! A special thanks to John of The Killarney Framer for doing such a great job, I won't leave it so long next time – I promise!

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on a new spin on the Universal Contour Wrap Classic treatment
Elite Universal Contour Body Wrap UCW is the evolution from the well-known Universal Contour Wrap Classic treatment, being more effective in a shorter time and much more relaxing. Through the new “Universal Contour Wrap Chrysalis” machine, which combines electrical muscle stimulation and thermal heat, the Classic Elite wrap treatment allows for improved inch loss in faster time. The Universal Contour Body Wrap Classic Elite offers you a guarantee to lose at least 6 inches in just 1.5 hours during your first treatment. There is no other body wrap solution that offers this scientifically proven result on the market. How does it work? Before you are wrapped in the Classic sea clay soaked bandages (which are the secret to Universal Contour Body Wrap’s guaranteed inch loss), the electro-stimulation straps from Chrysalis are placed strategically around the waist, stomach and thighs. You are then wrapped and placed into the Chrysalis thermal blanket for a 35-minute intense, but highly relaxing treatment. The instant heat relaxes the body and opens the pores, drawing out toxins more rapidly and boosting the blood flow. This heat source combined with electrical muscle stimulation can speed up the treatment process to nearly half the time, allowing inch loss to be achieved quicker and more comfortably. • For more information, don’t hesitate to call us at 064-66329666

We should all regard aspects of life, art and performance with a childlike wonder, says singer and singing teacher Grace Foley
Fall In Love Again THIS WEEK I am asking you to listen with ears that have lived, loved, lost and learned. Just recently my mother discovered a CD of mine in my childhood bedroom. She listened to it and urged me to do the same as she knew I would feel a huge connection with number of the songs. As I listened I felt a sense of familiarity with the music, yet it also seemed new to me. I played to this album over and over again as a child but it is only now that the sentiment of the songs really rings true for me. I realised the reason for this is because I have lived so many years since I last listened to this album. I do not simply imagine what loss might be like; I have experienced it. I do not have an untainted sense of hope; I have been deeply hurt. The melodies are so familiar yet the words only now make sense.

Fundraiser
As an innocent child I could never imagine what it would be like to one day sing songs about things that have actually happened to me. One song in particular has struck a very special chord with me. This song is so true to my own life’s journey and there is a certain symmetry to the fact that I actually first fell in love with this song before I knew how much it would one day mean to me. This week I ask you to take out your old CDs or record or tapes and listen with new ears. Listen with a heart and mind that has lived through so much since you last heard this music. You might find yourself falling in love with a song all over again...

F1 Title Fight Is Back On
THIS weekend sees the 2017 F1 title battle return after the summer break to Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps circuit. This circuit is among the most historic on the F1 calendar, having hosted a Grand Prix as long ago as 1924, and remains one of the most popular venues with drivers and fans alike. This track has hosted some of the most epic battles over the years. One example that springs to mind is Mika Hakkinen’s move on Michael Schumacher in 2000. (YouTube: M. Hakkinen vs M. Schumacher Spa 2000; https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=K1WuWu8kGak). The clip speaks for itself. This year’s championship leader, Sebastian Vettel extended his lead over Lewis Hamilton going into the break, however Ferrari have traditionally been weaker in the second half of the season
in favour of next year’s car but for the first time in 10 years Ferrari has a real chance for championship glory. They can’t afford to back off now. Power tracks dominate the remainder of the season which should hand the advantage to Mercedes but in Austria Ferrari were catching Mercedes in the later part of the race and in Hungry Mercedes couldn’t catch Ferrari even with tyre issues. The power deficit may not play a bigger part than expected for the remainder of the season. Mind games, as we have seen over the last number of years, are out of the mix as the two protagonists are on opposing teams. This will be a straight fight for glory, reminiscent of the Hakkinen verses Schumacher days – if it is anything like the clip referred to above, we will be well entertained.

It Is Official - VW Kombi To Return VW HAS been in the news for all the wrong reasons over the past two years. Regenerating goodwill in the brand would give even the best spin-doctor sleepless nights. But sometimes the obvious is right under your nose. Previous attempts to revive the iconic ‘Microbus’ have fallen on deaf ears until now. However, this week VW has committed to a modern replacement to the beloved Kombi van which the original had a production run of more than 56 years ceasing in Brazil in 2013. Unlike the original, this will be cutting edge all-electric, commercial van and people mover with autonomous driving when it is released in 2022. Previously we showed you the ID
BUZZ concept that the new Kombi is loosely based on and you have to admit, it is cool. As well as a passenger model, VW said the production version would be available as a commercial van named the ID BUZZ Cargo, the same size as a VW Transporter. It incorporates a 111kWh lithium-ion battery in its floor, a 150kW electric motor at either end, variable seating for up to eight people, interactive connectivity and a high level of automated driving. The original Kombi played such a big part in the ’60s hippie movement and today is still recognised as the symbol of that era. There is no other vehicle in history to conjure up as much emotion. What movement will embrace the new Kombi?

Aston Martin
1956 Aston Breaks Records
A CLASSIC Aston Martin raced by Sir Stirling Moss has become the most expensive British car after it was bought for €19,050,000 in the US. The 1956 DBR1 was built to be raced at Le Mans and has been labelled the ‘most important’ Aston Martin produced. It was the star lot at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale in California and drew a huge crowd. Two rival collectors battled for almost seven minutes to get their hands on the green racing car. The hammer price was enough to buy 120 brand new Aston
Martin DB11s. It is also now the seventh most valuable car ever sold publicly, with only five Ferraris and one Mercedes fetching more. The Jaguar D-Type that won at Le Mans in 1955 was previously the most expensive British car, going €18,440,000 in 2016. Five Aston Martin DBR1s were built from 1956 to 1958. The original 250km/h engine is included in the price but has been taken out so the car can be driven. Moss raced it to victory with fellow Briton Jack Fairman at the Nurburgring 1000km in 1959.

How Come I Can Never Get Through To Railway Station? WHY does no one answer the phone when I call Killarney Railway Station? Not only does it seem like no one answers the phone there, but whenever I call to the station there never seems to be anyone on duty. Last Thursday I rang the railway station four or five times but got no answer. It’s a downright scandal. I can’t understand it and tourists don’t understand it either. Like many in this town, I often have visitors, including students, staying with me over
the summer, and they simply can’t fathom it. Many people, like myself, do not use the Internet. Last week many people wanted to know if there were special trains on Sunday. A friend of mine had a ticket to go to the All-Ireland semi-final in Dublin but said it was of no use to her because she couldn’t get on to the railway station and said she did not know if she would get a train. Fall In Points For STEM Courses THE organisers of Ireland’s largest STEM education event in Ireland, the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE), have suggested that Ireland needs to take an early, more rounded, approach to fostering an interest in STEM with students. This comes as points for all third level STEM courses fall slightly this year, except maths. The results are interesting however we are not perceiving it as negative as there are mitigating circumstances that we do not know the full affects of yet, such as the new marking system. Whilst engineering is down, maths has increased and science and technology are only down slightly. We at the BTYSTE have long campaigned to highlight that STEM subjects are for everyone and to highlight that you do not need to be an ‘A’ student to have a career in STEM. As these courses traditionally carried a requirement of high points, this fall in points may in fact open it up and allow many other STEM enthusiasts to consider studying it at third
level as it is now even more achievable. Organisers of the BTYSTE are very aware of just how important STEM education is for Ireland, particularly when experts predict more and more jobs will require science, technology or maths skills into the future. Ireland has an enormous opportunity ahead of it, as we are already seen as leading the way in innovative developments. However we need to foster an early interest in STEM. Here parents and teachers can play an important role in encouraging young students to take a greater interest in science and engineering subjects. I also believe that participating in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition can be an important step to foster and grow this lifelong interest in STEM. Mari Cahalane, Head of BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition , Via email
I RECENTLY spent an afternoon in Killarney National Park with my young family. Prior to leaving, I noticed my son had been bitten by two ticks. On further inspection, I found a further two on my other child. As a Killarney native, I frequently visit the National Park and all it has to offer. Kerry has been identified in recent years as one of the top three counties in Ireland for the presence of ticks. The risk of Lyme’s disease associated
with such ticks is a real concern for the area. I feel it is necessary to consider erection of clearly legible signs alerting the public to the presence of ticks. Also, tick removal tools need to be made available to ensure a timely and effective removal of such ticks, therefore minimising the transmission risk of Lyme’s disease. Thank You From Kenya Education Project ALL who organised the coffee morning in the Killarney Royal Hotel on August 1 would like to say thank you to each and everyone who supported the event. It was a huge success and raised valuable funds for the Kenya Education Project’s activities project. At the moment Katie O’Connell and James Greene are
running a summer camp for children in a slum village in Kenya. Classes in art, dance, music and wellness are part of a busy week of activities which is bringing joy and fun to lives of many kids. Eddie Sheehy, Killarney, Kenya Education Project

Garden Magic Debby Looney
It’s time for gardeners to reap their rewards, says Debby Looney
Happy Harvest
THE vegetable garden should be providing an abundance during the month of August. Even carrots and beetroot are ready to pull. Garlic should be ready at this time of the year also, it is ready to harvest when the leaves are yellow but still upright. Lift them gently with a fork and leave to dry naturally, in the sun, if at all possible. What to do with all the empty space, though? Well, if you have sown lettuce, scallions or kohlrabi, they can still be planted out. Radishes, spinach and lettuce can still be sown. It is a good time to sow all your hardy salads, such as Chinese salads, mizuna, pak choi and mustard. They perform well in the second half of the year, as they bolt when it is too warm. If you find you have large empty patches, then I would recommend sowing green manures. Green manure is basically a fast growing crop which can be dug into the ground. There are two categories – legumes and non-legumes. Legumes, such as clovers, vetch and field beans will set atmospheric nitrogen, and the foliage of all types returns nutrients into the soil when dug in. Some, such as Phacelia, have large root systems which help break up soil. Another benefit is that they prevent soil erosion and compaction while the land lies idle. And finally, a good reason to sow them is that they suppress weeds! There are quite a few varieties to choose from, and most can be sown year round. Some of the more popular green manures are: buckwheat – excellent for poor soil, best sown from April to August; crimson clover – a member of the legume family, so will set nitrogen; Essex clover – very hardy, sets nitrogen and can be left for a year if necessary; and grazing rye – good for overwintering. Phacelia is a good green manure for the summer, bees are attracted to its pretty blue flowers. Phacelia also attracts beetles which are the natural predators of slugs! When using green manure, make sure it does not go to seed, as you may have a problem on your hands then.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels
MATTHEW 16:13-20: This marks a turning point in the life of Jesus, and of the disciples. It is the first time that his disciples recognise him as the Messiah. Recall turning points in your own life when you came to some deeper understanding of who Jesus is. “Who do you say that I am?” This is possibly the most important question that Jesus puts to us. In your heart of hearts, how do you answer this question? Jesus praises Peter for his faith and comments that this was not his own doing but a gift of God. Perhaps there have been times when you have been more than usually conscious that faith is a gift. Be thankful for the gift you have received. These are troubled times for the Church and the promise of Jesus that ‘the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it’ are an encouragement. What helps you to draw strength from this promise of Jesus? What signs of hope do you see in the Church today? John Byrne OSA, Veritas
Musings
WHAT does this story tell us? Jesus wanted a response to his question who am I for you? He had spent time with people and some have accepted him. Peter’s was the remark of faith. Faith is in the person of Jesus before any creed. Our faith is based on Jesus not on the Church. It is knowing Jesus from
Support Groups
the inside – knowing who he really is with the knowledge of the heart. Is our faith just like a birthmark or a way of life and love? For some it is just a birthmark. A label for birth, marriage and death. It has become more like this in Ireland and the Church in many ways allows this. Who is Christ for me? The question that will ground our faith. We are here for partnership with the Lord in bringing on the reign of God. What would that look like? That people who care for each other and particularly for the old, the child, the weaker, the unborn and the refugee. The Church is the community where the weakest are welcomed. The son of the living God is the one who heals, cures, wants us, and is the human face of God. We are that too – he has no body now on earth but ours! Donal Neary SJ, Veritas

Clifford Puts On A Show As Kerry Secure Final Spot The Fossa youngster has all the tools to excel at the next level - wherever that may be, writes Adam Moynihan

All-Ireland Minor Championship Semi-Final Kerry 2-22 Cavan 2-10
I think it’s safe to say that there has never been a minor footballer who has captured the imagination quite like David Clifford. Kicking 1-10 in Croke Park would be a career highlight for any top footballer but for the 18-year-old Fossa native it was just another day at the office. He was outstanding for 60 minutes on Sunday as he and his Kerry minor teammates trounced Cavan in the All-Ireland semi-final and now another final, and a shot at a unique four-in-a-row, is just around the corner. It was the latest in a string of high-class performances from the talented youngster who is fast-becoming a household name the length and breadth of the country. Clifford is under an unusual amount of scrutiny for a minor, with his highlights constantly doing the rounds on social media and speculation about his future rampant, but you certainly wouldn’t know it from his laid-back demeanour. His latest masterclass was a joy to behold. He finished up with 1-7 from play along with a free and two beautifully struck 45s, while also doing a great job
of setting up scores for his teammates. Rathmore’s Brian Friel chipped in with four well-taken scores while Crokes’ Jack Griffin also made an impact from the bench, racking up 1-1 late on to help Kerry widen the gap. Of course, outings like the one on Sunday serve only to intensify the commotion surrounding Clifford’s future beyond minor level. Although he appears to have all the tools to make it with Kerry, a career in the AFL is also a distinct possibility. It goes without saying that I’d love to see him stay. As a Kerry supporter, the prospect of watching David Clifford line out with the likes of Paul Geaney and James O’Donoghue is obviously very exciting and in many respects it would be a great pity if he didn’t go on to play senior. But, at the end of the day, it’s his life and his decision to make. There seems to be this notion that fellas can never say “no” to Kerry, that it’s too much of an honour, and that turning your back on the green and gold is some kind of mortal sin. There’s no question that it is a great privilege and something that should be respected but anyone begrudging a young athlete a career in professional sports, whatever the code or the setting, would want to get their head examined. Not many kids from Kerry get the opportunity to play intercounty, but even fewer get the opportunity to turn pro.
It remains to be seen whether he’ll continue to grace Croke Park in the years to come or ply his trade a little further afield, but the good news for Kerry fans is that we have him for at least one more hour of football. The prodigious forward will be hoping to guide his team to yet another All-Ireland title when they face either Dublin or Derry on September 17. Whatever happens thereafter, happens. For now we should just enjoy the show. Kerry scorers: D Clifford (1-10, 2 45s, 1f ), J Griffin (1-1), B Friel (0-4), F Clifford (0-2), D O’Connor, B Mahony, Donnchadh O’Sullivan, Donal O’Sullivan and E Horan (0-1 each). Kerry team: Deividas Uosis (Dingle); Niall Donohue (Firies), Chris O’Donoghue (Glenflesk), Seán O’Leary (Kilcummin); Patrick Warren (Gneeveguilla), Michael Potts (Dr Crokes), Cian Gammell (Legion); Barry Mahony (St Senan’s), Diarmuid O’Connor (Na Gaeil); Adam Donoghue (Castleisland), David Clifford (Fossa), Donal O’Sullivan (Kilgarvan); Fiachra Clifford (Laune Rangers), Donnchadh O’Sullivan (Firies), Brian Friel (Rathmore). Subs: Jack Griffin (Dr Crokes) for Donnchadh O’Sullivan, Eddie Horan (Scartaglen) for Warren, Cathal Ferriter (Annascaul) for Donal O’Sullivan, Ciarán O’Reilly (Austin Stacks) for Fiachra Clifford, Michael O’Leary (Renard) for Mahony and Ryan O’Neill (Na Gaeil) for Gammell

Kerry & Mayo End Level In Croke Park Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald KERRY and Mayo must meet again tomorrow in Croke Park to decide who will go forward to the 2017 All Ireland SFC final after playing out an epic drawn game on Sunday last. The teams ended level on 2-14 each. Kerry could have snatched it in time added on when Bryan Sheehan was awarded a free about 60 yards from the Mayo goal. He had been on the field for just a few minutes and great an all as he is as a place kicker this one proved too much for him. Aidan O‘Shea fielded the ball just short of the Mayo goal.
Difficult conditions The wet and slippery conditions made good football very difficult and accounts for so many wides by both sides. However, there was no mistaking the resolve of both teams in their bid to assert supremacy. They gave it everything and in the final analysis a draw was a fair result. Neither side deserved to lose.
Big decision The big talking point was the unexpected decision of Stephen Rochford to withdraw Aidan O’Shea from his normal centre forward berth to the full back position in an effort to blunt the effects of Kieran Donaghy, the Kerry full forward. It was a brave move but it did not work out. It was a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. O‘Shea was missed from the Mayo attack and he failed to curb Donaghy. In my opinion Kieran Donaghy deserves the MVP award. Over the years he has picked up the MVP award on several occasions in basketball and he certainly was Kerry’s most valuable player in this game. He scored just one point but he was hugely instrumental in getting his fellow Kerry forwards to score 2-6 out of a total of 2-14. His contribution was immense and Kerry wisely adapted their game by sending in low balls for the most part. There were just two high balls sent in. O’Shea won the first high ball, but then Donaghy took over. I expect that O Shea will revert to his normal centre forward position for the replay.
Full back line Once again the Kerry full back line was exposed as early as the 6th minute when Andy Moran, RTÉ’s
Man-of-the-match outfoxed Shane Enright and whipped the ball past Brian Kelly from close range for the opening goal. The Mayo veteran gave the Tarbert man a real roasting. Moran scored 1-5 all from play and played important roles in a further 1-3. Enright never got to grips with Moran and beside him Mark Griffin was also in real trouble. Griffin was substituted at half time having failed to curb Jason Doherty in the match ups. Jonathan Lyne took his place. Killian Young did reasonably well and kicked a spectacular point. With a beaten full back line in front of him life was made very difficult for Brian Kelly, who could not be faulted for Mayo’s two goals. The Kerry half back line did reasonably well with Paul Murphy doing best once more and he was on hand to score that vital point in time added on. Tadhg Morley was in trouble early on but he did improve and he made that vital interception that led to Sheahan’s late free. Overall Peter Crowley did well especially going forward.
as Kerry’s top scorer. As stated earlier Donaghy was the real star for Kerry. James O Donoghue tried very hard, but he was closely marked. He scored I point from play and 2 from frees. He was called ashore in the 62nd minute. Enter Barry John Keane who popped over a very valuable trademark point in those hectic final minutes. For Mayo Andy Moran, Keith Higgins, Tom Parsons and Colm Boyle looked best.
Midfield
Mayo and Kerry have given us some great games. Who can ever forget Limerick in 2014? Kerry won and went on to claim the All Ireland defeating Donegal in the final. If Mayo are to beat Kerry all 31 counties will be cheering them on against either Tyrone or Dublin. Both of these will battle it out in Sunday’s semi-final. I give Tyrone a good chance of winning even if it is hard to see Dublin losing this one with so many classy players on the bench. Patrons can look forward to two cracking matches over the weekend. On balance I expect a Kerry v Dublin final.
Midfield proved difficult for both sides. David Moran put in a solid performance and it was his driving shot at goal that led to Johnny Buckley’s goal. Anthony Maher was outpaced throughout and it didn’t surprise me that James Barry came on for him. Na Gaeil man Barry will probably start tomorrow.
The forwards Mikey Geaney had a poor game and it was no surprise to see him substituted in the 22nd minute. Jack Savage took his place. Team Captain Johnny Buckley was not as influential as he was in the Galway game but he did make the most powerful piece of fielding on one occasion in the middle of the field. He did well to follow up and score Kerry’s second goal after David Moran’s effort was parried by David Clarke. Stephen O’ Brien picked up a great pass from Kieran Donaghy to score Kerry’s first goal. He tried very hard but it was not a great day for soloing and he frequently lost possession of the slippery ball. Paul Geaney was very good and made great use of every ball that came his way. He scored 3 points from play and a further four from frees ending up
Replay It will be very interesting to see what changes Kerry and Mayo will make for the replay and also changes in the match ups. It is highly unlikely that Mayo will place Aidan O’Shea at full back once more. Seamus O’Shea and Tom Parsons are other options. Mayo will face in to their ninth game in this championship whereas Kerry have had far fewer games coming the direct route. This was the very first time that Kerry were tested since they just edged out Dublin in the national league final. They will have learned a lot.
Remember Limerick
Statistics Statistics show that Mayo do not convert a high percentage of scoring opportunities and this was evident once more on Sunday last. They were so dominant in the first half that they had 17 opportunities to score, but they were successful only on 7 occasions. They could have been out of sight at half-time. Kerry were the masters in the second half. It is all to play for again tomorrow. Let us hope that the weather will be good as Last Sunday’s conditions were very difficult for both sides.

Disaster For Meeke & Nagle In Germany
Words: Cormac Casey LAST weekend’s Rally Germany surely will bring into question Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle’s future with the Citroen WRC team with the above picture saying it all. The rally kicked off with a short super-special spectator stage, and it took less than a mile into the event for their weekend to end in ruins. A rally that Citroen had one of its best chances to be competitive in a large-
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE Women’s Rugby World Cup has all but ended for Ireland after a harrowing defeat to France last Thursday at the UCD Bowl. France well and truly had their homework done and a first half blitz saw the game put out of the hosts reach early on. The word ‘Flair’ is often used when describing French rugby and this was certainly the case in the first half. The passing was utterly sublime and the tackling was hard. The French No. 8 Safi N’Diaye was a colossus on the pitch and put in a performance worthy of a world cup final. This team will be very difficult
ly disastrous season, Meeke broke his steering by clipping a concrete barrier with less than a mile into the stage. Not helping Meeke’s cause was Andreas Mikkelsen in the sister car taking second overall in his first tarmac outing with Citroen and Craig Breen in the third Citroen C3 entry finishing an ever consistent fifth spot recovering from a slow start on the first day. This has added to Meeke’s tally of
to beat and who could deny that the French would be worthy tournament winners. The Irish held the French scoreless in the second half, but it was a bridge too far for Tom Tierney’s women even though they did score a consolation try at the end through with replacement hooker Cliodhna smashing over the line. With Australia the opponents again to determine the 5th to 8th place playoffs, the Irish can take some solace with a strong finish. Not the end we would have wanted but cracking rugby nonetheless. Munster continue with their preseason as they plan for a busy season ahead. There has been no update on who will take over as Head Coach once Rassie Erasmus leaves at
crashes this year in Monte Carlo, Sweden, Argentina, Portugal and Italy with only one win in Mexico that almost ended in tears in the closing moments. Meeke is without question the fastest driver in the current WRC line-up. Ott Tanak in a Ford Fiesta won the event last weekend from the sensation of the weekend, Mikkelsen with Sebastian Ogier in a Ford Fies-
Christmas. No doubt there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes. Munster are due to Worcester to take on the Warriors in a preseason friendly and this will be an interesting game as Donncha O’Callaghan captains the side and the Warriors have just recently signed ex Munster legend Peter Stringer. Munster will open their new format PRO14 league with a match versus Benetton Treviso at Irish Independent Park in Cork. However, the one game not making the headlines is the ‘behind-closed-doors’ training match against Connacht in Galway. I’m sure this will be more than a ‘friendly’ as the preseason kicks into gear and the likes of Peter O’Mahony and the rest of the Lions slowly come back to the fold.
ta taking third and the lead in the championship after Thierry Neuville damaged his Hyundai i20 on day two, removing himself from the final results. Three rounds remaining, the championship is still wide open. 1) Ogier – 177 pts, 2) Neuville 160 pts, 3) Tanak 144 pts, 4) Lavala 123 pts. The excitement of the championship to date – anything can happen.

Sport Kenneth Clifford
Fossa veteran Kenneth Clifford talks to Adam Moynihan about his teammates, last year’s County Final and why people call him Snakes
Hi Kenneth. Thanks for talking to us. No hassle. It has been a tough year for Fossa in Division 3… Yeah, I suppose we had such a good year in 2016 it was kind of hard to follow it up and keep the momentum going. We lost to Dromid in the Junior Championship and if we won that game we probably would have been in a better position for the year. How have you been playing yourself? Not so good! I’ve been in and out of the team. I’m pushing on a bit now! What are your goals for the rest of the year? Hopefully to stay up in Division 3 and stay injury free. Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Paudie Clifford. The man would never stop complaining. You can be guaranteed he’d have my head melted. Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? It’s a throw-up between Mossy Prendiville and Dan Connell. The two boys are serious creeps. I’d give it to Dan because he’s little bit more intelligent than Mossy so he can probably work it better. Who’s the biggest moaner? Paudie again. Nothing’s ever good enough for him. Who’s the worst-dressed? Definitely Colin Myers. He wears Alfie Moon shirts the whole time. They’re absolutely horrendously bad. Who spends the most time in the gym? Does this answer your question?
Matt Rennie
Yes. If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for your club this year, who would it be? Easy one. Jimmy Falvey. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Donald O’Sullivan. I think he’s 48 now! He went away to Australia for two years and he came back in better shape than he left. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? I’d say it’d be Spa because they’re a very competitive team but it also seems like they have serious craic. What’s your proudest sporting moment? Winning the County Final with Fossa last year, definitely. And the most embarrassing? Being dropped for that final! Thanks John Evans!
If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Freddie Flintoff, I’d say he’s a howl, Conor McGregor would be good craic as well, and my grandfather. He played with Kerry and I would love to have been able to go for a few drinks with him but he passed away years ago. What are your five favourite sports in order? Football, soccer, darts, golf and hurling. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? Hurling. Everyone says hurling. We should make a team. Yeah, I might make that team! What’s the best sporting moment of all time? United winning the treble in ’99. I’ll never forget it because my dad was mocking me throughout and when they got the winner I jumped up and was like, “Yeaaaaahhhhh!” and gave him the bird. Do you have any nicknames? Snakes. Where did that come from? I think Billy Bucko gave me that name. I don’t know why.
Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? WhatsApp. Who’s the best man for the banter in the Fossa group? Mike Keeffe and Anthony Wharton. They always have good digs at each other. I’d be in the mix myself - I like to stir the pot! What’s your most-used emoji?
What’s the best show on TV? Game of Thrones. I’m locked into that now at the moment. What’s your favourite song at the moment? Jeez, I don’t know… Despacito? Big Bieber fan. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? It’s a toss of a coin between Darran O’Sullivan and Kieran O’Leary. I’ll give it to Kieran because he’s like the mayor of Killarney. He’s another man for the desperate Alfie Moon shirts. What would you have for your last meal? Steak. A big steak. I love steaks. Home-cooked? It doesn’t really matter. I’ll eat it! Who would play you in a movie about your life? Somebody hairy anyway I suppose. I can’t think of any hairy actors… Tom Hardy? And last one: can you tell me a joke? Where does Batman go in the morning? I don’t know. To the bat-hroom. Jesus. That’s the worst one yet. Thanks Kenneth! No bother my man!

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club,
Men’s Club Club Captain Declan McCarthy on behalf of the entire Club sends our heartiest congratulations to Ryan Kelliher on his success in The Kerry Boys Championship played at Ballybunion recently, Ryan is one of our group of very talented youths currently representing our Club, and we all wish him continued success for the future. Ryan is just 16 years of age, and he is already a seasoned campaigner representing our Club, and Ryan will have two further years playing in this particular championship. Ryan’s win is following in the family footsteps as his father Tomas, a former Irish Youths International, had won this Championship on two previous occasions in 1983 & 1984, and Tomas and Ryan have now become the first ever father and son pairing to have won this Championship. Ryan defeated James Temple of Portmarnock in the final on the 19th green, and the list of previous champions includes such golfing luminaries as John McHerny and Tommy Corridan. James Temple had overcome another of Killarney’s finest,
25.08.17 Luke Walsh in the first round of the Matchplay stages, the earlier rounds were strokeplay to determine the best of those who were competing for the championship, that would qualify for the Matchplay itself. The competition on Sunday the 20th of August was the Calor Gas sponsored Fourball on Mahony’s Point, the competition was clashing with the All- Ireland Semi-final Football encounter between Kerry and Mayo, still the winning score was a fantastic 48 points recorded by Joseph Sheehan and Tony Nolan. Full results were Joseph Sheehan (6) & Tony Nolan (14) 48 pts, 2nd George Vass (4) & Michael P. O’Donoghue (12) 46 pts, 3rd Dan Doona (10) & John C. O’Connor (10) 44 pts.

RICHARD WALLACE: Congratulations to Killarney RFC’s own Richard Wallace who represented Munster U17’s last week in a cracking win over Ulster last week. Richard was our U16’s captain for the past 2 seasons under head coach Tom Campbell and is a product of our Minis and Youths sections. Killarney Community Games
History was made in Abbottstown last Sunday when the boys U14 4x100 relay team wrote themselves into the history books when they captured the All Ireland Community Games title by winning gold in a keenly contested All Ireland Final. Alex Hennigan ran a superb first leg and gained ground on the Tipperary and Sligo danger teams. Conor Gammell ran a powerful second leg making up the stagger and Darragh Fleming ran a terrific third leg to extend the lead. Jason Lee ran a tremendous final leg to power to the finish line to great celebrations from the large Kerry crowd present. Aaron O Sullivan ran an excellent 3rd semi-final leg the previous night to get the team into the final. Well Done to Billy Hennigan and Philip Gammell for having the team so well prepared and trained in the pre-
vious weeks. Well done again to Darragh Flemming who captured a pewter individual medal for 4th place in the 800mts final and to Alex Hennigan underage again next year who got to the final of the U14 hurdles. On The Ball | Dr Crokes Club
County League Division 1 Round 10. Dr Crokes 2-13 Milltown 0-12. This was a game in which we found it hard to establish a comfortable lead against Milltown. Two goals however in the last quarter gave us the cushion for victory over opponents who never gave up right to the end. This gave us a ten out of ten in the competition. It also gave us a place in the Final and a home venue for that game. Both sides sent over two points in the first ten minutes but then we had three unanswered points for a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter. We sent over three points in the second quarter to Milltown’s two. This gave us a lead of 0- to 0-5 at the interval. Right through the third quarter we found it hard to put more daylight between ourselves and our opponents. The score at the end of this period was 0-11 to 0-8 in our favour. The game changer came at the start of the fourth quarter when substitute
Billy Courtney found the net after a good passing movement something we found it hard to put together for 45 minutes. Milltown to their credit never gave up and quickly added on two points to bring our lead back to four points. Points by Gavin O’Shea and Kieran O’Leary stretched our lead to six points. Our opponents had two points in the remaining minutes but these scores were sandwiched in between a good goal for us by Gavin O’Shea.

Strong Camaraderie & Sportmanship
JERRY FOLEY U-11 MEMORIAL BLITZ: As anyone who has been involved in GAA will know, there is no rivalry more intense than the one between neighbouring parishes, but, it was great sportsmanship and camaraderie that were the themes of this years’ annual Jerry Foley U11 Memorial Blitz. Pairc Eamonn, Farranfore was the venue last Saturday, 19th August where U11 teams from Firies, Milltown/Castlemaine, Kilcummin, Ballymac, Listry and Newmarket, Co. Cork treated everyone in attendance to a spectacle of skill and teamwork. All teams took part in a round robin se-

On The Ball | Monday 5.30pm ries with the top two teams contesting the final. The two pitches in operation were hectic for the day but in the end, there could only be one winner with tenacious Ballymac taking home the spoils after a thrilling game against a brave Kilcummin side. After the final, Neil Foley, Jerrys son, presented the annual cup to a victorious Ballymac with great scenes of jubilation. He also presented Newmarket’s’ Brían O’Keeffe with player of the blitz. Eugene Cosgrave, Firies GAA Coiste na nOg Chairman praised the visiting clubs, their mentors and parents/guardians for their efforts ensuring their clubs attendance, thus warranting the its’ success. He also commended Firies GAA volunteers and officers on their hospitality and generosity in time and effort, especially to Firies GAAs’ two Kerry Minors; Niall Donohue and Donnchadh O’Sullivan who spared a few moments to wish the home side well prior to their immediate departure to Croke Park for the All-Ireland Minor semi-final. Finally, he expressed his gratitude to the Foley family who have resoundingly supported the continuation of this annual blitz in its 22nd year. The future certainly looks bright for this much-respected tournament with the skill level that was on display throughout the day and we look forward already to next year.

Killarney Legion
COUNTY DIV.1 U16 FINAL: Killarney Legion1-15 Austin Stacks 4-14. A first half dominant performance by the Stacks in which they led 3-5 to 0-6 at the break effectively won the game for the Tralee side. Making full use of their physical advantage they made their possession tell and hit for goals at crucial stages to give them the foundation for the win. A pity because this Legion side has a lot more about them and they showed this in the second half where they managed to bring a 9-point deficit down to a goal. However, the Stacks responded and tacked on a series of points to eventually run out 8 point winners. While not intending to single out any individual as all the players gave what they had one would have to say that goalie Christian Casey performed heroics and was certainly one of the stand outs on the day. SENIOR LADIES: The club are very happy and grateful to welcome Rentokil
Initial as senior ladies’ sponsors. Managing director Mike O Mahony made the presentation to the girls in Derreen and we look forward to a happy joint venture. KERRY IN CROKE PARK: Another run at Mayo after the nerve wreaker of a drawn game, undoubtedly Kerry were off colour a little but still alive and kicking, ‘beidh lá eile ag an bpaorach’’. Win or lose in the replay we have the minor final to look forward to and especially to see Cian Gammell who turned in a fine display in the semi-final. Peter Keane continues his remarkable record, fair play. U11 BOYS: Killarney Legion 4-14 Spa 5-9. Trailing by a substantial 9pts.at the break our u11’s turned in a magnificent second half to run out 2 point winners, Darragh Murphy helped greatly with a personal tally of 3-8. Augurs well for the future. The u13’s also came up winners at home to Kenmare.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Kilcummin had a good win over Glenflesk on Friday last in Rd 10 of the County League. This win fashioned with determination throughout, sees us needing two further points to avoid relegation. Goals by Daniel O’Leary, Kieran Murphy (Pen) and Michael O’Shea together with six points from Noel Duggan saw us win by 3-15 to 1-10 but it was a good team performance overall with Donal Maher, Damien O’Leary and Oscar O’Connor showing well. MINORS: Our minors are away to Ardfert on Monday next at 7 pm. We wish Pat, his management team and the panel all the best. SENIORS: Two last quarter goals for the visitors finally settled this penultimate Division 1 County League clash played in the Paddy Burke Memorial Park on Friday evening last. The home side took the lead with a Derek Twiss pointed free but it was Dr. Crokes who lead at the end of the first quarter on a score line of 0-05 to 0-02. Both sides traded points and the visitors lead by 3 points at half time -Dr. Crokes 0-08, M/C 0-05. An early 2nd half point stretched that lead but points by Pa Wrenn, Derek Twiss and Jonathan O’ Sullivan brought the home side within 2 points of the visitors 0-10 to 0-08. However, goals in the 47th and 58th minute from Billy Courtney and Gavin O’Shea gave the visitors a solid cushion. Despite scores from Craig Counihan, Cathal Moriarty and Jonathan O’ Sullivan, it was Dr. Crokes who maintained their 100% record in Division 1, when referee Pádraig O’Sullivan blew the full-time whistle. Defeat however, left the home side in the dreaded drop zone. Final score: Dr. Crokes 2-13, M/C 0-12.
