PAGESIX Senior officials from Irish Water felt the wrath of elected councillors at Monday’s monthly meeting of Kerry County Council. | By Sean Moriarty Senior Irish Water staff were invited to give a presentation to Kerry County Council as a result of an increasing number of water breaks all over the county – but particularly in the Mid Kerry, Killcummin and Park Road areas. Sean Laffey, head of asset management, outlined the state body’s plans to alleviate a range of problems with the water supply in the area. He was left reeling by concerns raised by elected members as he attempted to explain away the issues that face residents all over the county. Irish Water was described as a Third World service, the firm was accused of making ‘half-assed’ attempts at solving water issues in the area and one Killarney Councillor went as far as saying that Irish Water should be disbanded. One of the key concerns was the delay of the Killcummin Water Scheme. The scheme was all set to go ahead last year – a January 2020 Killarney Municipal District meeting was told as much – only for Irish Water to reverse its plans by March. Cllr Marie Moloney, who lives in the area, accused Irish Water of electioneering. The Killcummin announcement was made in the run up to the February 2020 General Election. “Once they got their votes the whole thing stopped,” she told the meeting. “It is very hard to take the word of Irish Water.” Multiple breaks on the Park Road in

Councillors lay in to Irish Water staff
Killarney was another issue that was at the fore of Monday’s meeting. “For me as a councillor, I have no confidence in Irish Water,“ Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan told the meeting. “People of Killcummin are being treated abysmally and Irish Waters half-assed attempts at solving the issues. There are weekly breaks on the Park Road. I want to see action, I want to see diggers in Killarney.” Cllr Brendan Cronin lives in the Listry, Faha, Rockfield area, another area that has seen multiple breaks in recent weeks. “Irish Water are a public embarrassment,” he told the meeting. “I have lost all faith in Irish Water.” Moloney raised further concerns on the road network in Killcummin. Several
roads along the proposed Irish Water Scheme have been resurfaced in recent weeks. This was a decision taken by elected councillors and Kerry County Council officials after Irish Water reversed its previous promise to complete the scheme. “Ye will be putting the roads back exactly as ye got them,” she warned. “Why are ye so slow – get a plan together and stick to it.” Newly co-opted councillor John O’Donoghue made his first contribution to a council debate. “This is a case of historic neglect,” he said as he raised concerns about sewage entering the river network. “This is a criminal act, Kilcummin is deplorable, the Park Road is like a swimming pool.” Cllr Niall Kelleher went on the attack
too. “How does Irish Water do its business,” he said. “Heretofore it has not been productive.” Cllr Donal Grady called for the body to be disbanded. “They have left us down again,” he told the meeting. “We have to disband them, from County Kerry at least.” Cllr Michael Cahill said: “Kerry is like a Third World country when it comes to water and waste management,” while Maura Healy-Rae said: “The people of the Killarney Municipal District have been enormously disrespected. Earlier in the meeting Mr Laffey said he would return to Killarney in January but after listening to the Councillors he moved that meeting to September.
public. Airport CEO John Mulhern was due to address an online Kerry County Council meeting on Monday but had to change his plans at last minute as he was asked to
attend a separate meeting on the future of the route. He did send a statement ahead of the meeting where he hinted: “That there will be a new carrier by mid to late July.”
A new Irish airline could take over the Kerry- Dublin route | By Sean Moriarty A new airline, called Emerald Airlines, is in the running to take over the Dublin Kerry route, the Killarney Advertiser understands. Following the sudden collapse of Stobart Air two weeks, the Kerry Dublin route has been left without a carrier to serve the Public Service Obligation franchise. Senior airport staff and officials from the Department of Transport are working behind the scenes to reinstate the service. It is hoped that the service will resume by mid-July and it is expected that Aer Lin-
gus Regional will fulfil the remaining time frame of the current contract. Long term, there are at least five or six airlines interested in taking over the route. Estonian state airline Nordica and carriers from Norway and Lithuania have expressed interest in operating the Kerry route. However, the Killarney Advertiser understands that the new Irish airline could be in the running for the new contract. It is understood that Emerald Airlines has applied to the Commission for Aviation Regulation or an operating licence, which entitles the holder to sell flights to the

Town Centre Vaccination Clinic Opens - new online registration possible A new vaccination clinic is set to open in Sheahan’s Pharmacy Main St on Friday. | By Sean Moriarty The long-established family pharmacy in the heart of Killarney is ready to start administrating the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to over 50s who are still waiting for a jab. A new clinic has been established on Bohereencaol to the rear of Sheahan’s Pharmacy. Bookings will be possible via a newly launched online portal which is believed to be a first for any Killarney-based pharmacy. Members of the public are invited to register for an appointment and even those outside the over 50 age group can book and they will be called once their cohort time goes live. “Staff from Sheahan’s Pharmacy are delighted to welcome its first vaccination
participants at our modern clinic which is just behind the pharmacy premises on Main Street,” William Sheahan told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are starting with the Johnson & Johnson Vaccine and will have 40 slots available in the next two weeks but are welcoming all ages to register interest on our website and we will contact them when we are able to vaccinate that cohort as more vaccines come on stream in the coming weeks.” Other vaccines, including the Pfizer version, are expected to be released to pharmacies as the government ramps up its vaccine roll out. Members of the public can book a slot on Sheahan’s website: www.sheahanspharmacy.ie or where this is not possible they are welcome to call the pharmacy 0646631113 to make the appointment.
Ban takeaway pints | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney councillor has called for the ban on the sale of takeaway alcoholic drinks. Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan says the anti-social behaviour associated with such sales is creating a bad image for Killarney. O’Callaghan’s family run the Failte Hotel
on College St but he confirmed that his business does not allow the sale of take drinks. “If you want a drink, sit down and have it,” he said. “I am calling for the banning of take away pints. It looks terrible, greed cannot take over the quality of life. Families and the elderly deserve to be able to walk down the streets without meeting people who are drinking.”
Jessie has been nominated as Best Actress in a Lead Role Film category for her work in Charlie Kaufman’s surreal 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things'. Winners will be announced at a virtual IFTA awards ceremony which will be broadcast on Virgin Media One on Sunday, July 4. Other well-known Irish actors up for awards include Brendan Gleeson for 'The Comey Rule', Paul Mescal for 'Normal People', Dervla Kirwan 'Smother' and Gabriel Byrne for 'Death of a Ladies Man'. Over the past few months during lockdown, the Irish Academy Members have been busy viewing, deliberating, and shortlisting the very best work from across great Irish films, performances, and achievements. Nominations have been shortlisted by Irish Academy members alongside a specialist jury panel of industry experts from around the world. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will
Jessie Buckley
be no physical IFTA Awards Ceremony until March 2022, in keeping with COVID guidelines and best international practice. Further details about the show and the international guest participants will be announced shortly.
Clamp down on B&B planning permissions | By Sean Moriarty Bed and Breakfast owners in Killarney will have to register their premises with Kerry County Council or apply for planning permission to continue operating. In April 2020 the Killarney local Electoral Area was designated a Rent Pressure Zone. Under the Rent Pressure Zone rules, where a person owns a property in a rent pressure zone which is not their principal private residence and intends to let it for short-term letting purposes, they will be required to apply for a change of use planning permission unless the property already has a specific planning permission to be used for tourism or short-term letting purposes. Any owner occupied Bed and Breakfast’s operating within the Rent Pressure Zone that do not have the required planning permission are subject to the registration process. To date 45 Warning Letters have been
issued under the provisions of Section 152 of the Planning and Development Act 2000-2020 in respect of the use of properties for short term letting purposes. “Kerry County Council has been allocated funding by the Department of Housing ,Local Government and Heritage to implement and enforce the short term letting provisions and these resources have now been assigned and have commenced work in this area,” a council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “The initial focus on the implementation and enforcement of the short term letting provisions is on the Killarney Local Electoral Area but this will be broadened over time. It should be noted that the letting of a property on a short term basis ,notwithstanding where it is in the county ,is a material change of use of the property concerned and requires planning permission. Kerry County Council is responsible for monitoring and enforcing these new requirements.”

Quest Killarney race is back
The relaunched national adventure race series will include an event in Killarney. | By Sean Moriarty
The Continental Tyres National Adventure Race Series was relaunched this week after nearly two years on the sidelines. It will feature six events between September and October and will commence with a race in Killary Fjord in Leenaun, County Galway, and will conclude with majestic Glendalough in Wicklow. It marks the return of the popular Quest Killarney Adventure Race which last ran in 2019. This will be a huge boost to the local economy – the last edition of Quest Killarney attracted 2,000 participants. Further details of the Killarney event will
be released at a later date but it was confirmed at the series launch, this week, that the local event will be included in the national championship schedule. This year’s Quest Killarney will run on October 2. “We’re thrilled to be back! We have missed the camaraderie and adrenaline rush of competitive adventure racing over the past year, so this is a big step forward. It’s a slightly condensed agenda this year with participants required to complete three events to qualify for the series, but we are confident that all events will be really enjoyable and a safe experience for everyone,” said Paul Mahon of Adventure Racing Ireland.
The gardens at Muckross House and Killarney House are in full bloom and management at the two tourists attractions are encouraging locals to pay a visit before the tourist season takes off in earnest. The garden at Killarney House is in a spectacular display of roses. “The heritage variety of rose, Rosa Wild Edric, around the House, is at its most magnificent these days. Red roses were one of Mrs Mary McShain’s favourite flowers. The McShains were also very proud of the avenue of Cherry Trees,
which they planted to remind them of their time living in Washington D.C.,” said manager Pat Dawson. “As the summer season unfolds in earnest and as we prepare to welcome the very many visitors who will ‘staycation’ in Killarney, we should take a moment to reflect on the beauty of our surroundings here in Killarney. Before the hordes of visitors return again post COVID-19, take the opportunity to savour and enjoy the beautifully maintained gardens at Muckross House and Killarney House. Just go and enjoy and give thanks for the generosity of the McShain family and the dedication of the garden staff at Killarney House and Gardens.”

Spa GAA club members enjoy ‘staycation’ in National Park The women and girls from Spa GAA club took the term ‘staycation’ to a new extreme by having their annual outing in Killarney National Park.
DAY OUT: Members of the Spa GAA Club under 16 team, led by Susan Waters along with Claire Tangney enjoyed a 'staycation' in the National Park
The Under 8 and Under 12 girls teams’ day out started with a boat trip on the lakes followed by a walk and a picnic in the National Park. “Thanks to all the coaches especially Johnny Brosnan who organised this event. By all accounts everyone had a great time. Well done to all involved,” said Spa GAA club’s PRO Deirdre O’Sullivan Darcy.
The Under 16 team, led by coaches Susan Waters along with Claire Tangney set off from Ross Castle by boat to Lord Brandon’s Cottage. This was followed by a 14km hike back to Ross Castle via the Old Kenmare Road and Torc Waterfall. “They thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful boat trip up through the lakes, getting all the local history from boatman Donal Jnr of Gap of Dunloe Traditional Boat Tours,” added Deirdre. “It was a great day and Susan was so proud of how the girls represented Spa Club on the day.”

Killarney nurses complete Ring of London charity cycle Four London-based Killarney nurses have completed a 130km cycle around the city to raise funds for a new bus for St Francis’ Special School in Beaufort. | By Sean Moriarty The four, Michelle Fleming and twins Aisling and Elaine O’Donoghue from Dalton’s Avenue and Linda Daly from Mangerton intended on returning home for the annual Ring of Kerry Cycle but pandemic restrictions mean the event is cancelled and they cannot travel anyway. This year’s Ring of Kerry Cycle is being promoted as a virtual event with the tagline ‘Anytime -Anywhere.’ Michelle had the idea to do a Ring of London and on Monday of this week the four cycled from their Finsbury Park homes to some of the best know sites in the British capital. They visited iconic sites like the Olympic Stadium in East London, Epping Forest in North London, Richmond Part to the west of the city and Woolwich on the southern banks of the River Thames. They also visited the ExCel Centre in
London’s docklands, the entertainment venue famously converted into a Nightingale Hospital during the peak of the pandemic. There journey took them to Wimbledon and within a stone-throw of Wembley Stadium. The journey was not without drama either, heavy rain, punctures and London’s traffic all adding to the challenge. “You would think London is flat but there are a lot of hills with long drags and we were not expecting that,” Michelle told the Killarney Advertiser. “Three of us have completed the Ring of Kerry a few times and Elaine was always saying she wanted to do it. I came up with the idea of the Ring of London and the girls went for it.” Donations can made via https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/11405041_rok--ring-oflondon-2021.html
John O’Donoghue was formally co-opted on to both Kerry County Council and Killarney Municipal District at Monday’s monthly council meeting. The 39-year-old schoolteacher from Muckross will replace his uncle Michael Gleeson after the long serving councillor announced his retirement from politics in April. Mr O’Donoughue was announced as Gleeson’s replacement last month and was formalised on Monday. Cllr Brendan Cronin, the Mayor of Killarney, proposed O’Donoghue’s co-option and this was seconded by Cllr Patrick Scarteen O’Connor, the Mayor of Kerry. “It is a tremendous honour for me to take up my seat on the council.” Cllr O’Donoghue told the online meeting. “I pay tribute to my uncle, Michael Gleeson, who started his life in politics in 1983, ironically the year I made my appearance in the world. He is one of the most principled people that I know and I thank him for his magnificent contribution to Kerry.”
NEW COUNCILLOR: Cllr John O'Donoghue was formally co-opted on to Kerry County Council on Monday.
Like his uncle and political predecessor, O’Donoghue will make environmental issues his priority. “Global warming affects us here in Kerry as much as anywhere in the world,” he added. “As someone who was born, raised and still lives on a small farm, farmers are the custodians of the land, and I hope to be their voice.”

World’s fastest air ambulance comes into operation in Kerry The Irish Community Air Ambulance has taken delivery of a Leonardo 109S helicopter. It is the fastest civilian helicopter in the world and is ideally suited to the provision of a rural Helicopter Emergency Medical Service. The charity heli-med service has responded to almost 1,000 incidents from
its base in Rathcoole, County Cork since it was established in July 2019. Cardiac arrests account for the most incidents so far this year, followed by road traffic collisions and farming accidents. Kerry is one of the counties that relies
most on the voluntary service with 29 call outs in the region in the first three months of this year alone. The new aircraft, which will go into full service on Thursday, offers more speed, greater patient comfort and it has the capacity to take on more fuel increasing endurance and range. The helicopter can travel up to 300 kilo-
25.6.2021 metres per hour. It is capable of flying the length of the country from Mizen to Malin Head in a little over 90 minutes. The same journey would take 8 hours by road. “We are often called to the most serious of incidents. In these situations where you’re dealing with a critical patient, the small gains can have the greatest benefit to the patient’s comfort and outcomes. This new helicopter offers more speed but it also has additional room at the rear. That means that we can transport adult patients more comfortably and we also have space for an additional medic on board, if necessary,” said Irish Community Air Ambulance Chief Executive Mícheál Sheridan.

Call for public meeting to discuss Bypass Road plans Deputy Michael Healy Rae and Cllr Jackie Healy Rae have both supported a call for COVID-19 compliant outdoor public meeting to discuss the current N22 Killarney Bypass Road which they say could have negative and life changing impacts on the people of Tiernaboul and the greater Spa area outside Killarney Having received a request from 179 local Spa signatories both Public Representatives are urging other public representatives to attend a meeting which could see the outdoor spaces of Spa GAA Field host the event. “In many ways it is fitting that there is an outdoor facility available to local people who have been very much left in the dark when it has come to consultation from the council to discuss what will be a life changing process on them especially if some of the plans are implemented which could see Spa people living just
outside Killarney in a cut off island from the town,” said Deputy Michael Healy Rae. “Outdoor Public meetings are the only way to inform and discuss views and I feel that this can be done in keeping with COVID-19 restrictions. I know there is an online process but for many accessing online maps with different coloured links is not just good enough especially when the outcome for some could see them taking a lot longer to get into Killarney for shopping or social occasions. It is very important that people understand all the possible changes to their lives with a new road.” Deputy Michael Healy Rae added. Cllr Jackie Healy Rae also called for need to ensure that proper consultation was carried out. “This is not a tick the box exercise, it is an exercise in informing people and for them to inform us as public representatives of their fears and concerns, so we as elected representatives can help shape solutions,” he said.
Cronin calls for clarity on Killarney – Farranfore Calls to extend N22 Public route consultation | By Sean Moriarty Cllr Brendan Cronin has expressed concerns on how the public consultation for the proposed N22 Killarney to Farranfore road upgrade scheme is being handled. Three different road options have been published online and members of the public have been invited to make observations and comments on the project. Today (Friday June 25) is the last day for people to make submissions but Cllr Cronin believes that the Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland have already made their decision. He challenged senior Kerry County Council staff on the matter on Monday after he was told by several of his constituents that “other politicians” have been telling them that the route choice has already been made. “This is making a mockery of the whole public consultation process,” he told the online meeting. “I want the council [executive] to clarify what I am being told
in my area.” in 2003, a preferred route corridor for an improved section of the N22 National Primary road between Farranfore and Killarney was identified. Following a Peer Review process in 2008, some refinement areas were identified for re-assessment and a refined preferred route corridor was finalised in 2012. However, this project was later suspended due to the prevailing economic circumstances at the time. Since the identification and appraisal of the Refined Preferred Route Corridor in 2012, several changes to European and National policy have occurred including in areas of Environmental Protection, Climate Adaptation and Transport In 2019, KCC in consultation with TII commenced a review of the scheme in accordance with current National Guidelines to consider and assess all alternative modes and options which could potentially improve the transport connectivity between Farranfore and Killarney and onwards to Tralee and Cork.
consultation timeframes | By Sean Moriarty Residents of the Tiernaboul area are calling for Kerry County Council to extend the deadline for the public consultation period on the proposed Killarney bypass and new road to Farranfore. The deadline for submissions and comments on four different routes between Faranfore and Lissivigeen ends today (Friday). Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, the consultation process was carried out online. Interested parties were invited to view the various proposed routes via https://n22publicconsultation.virtualeventspace.io/. These is a change from previous public consultations where maps and other project details would go on display in a public building like a town hall or library. Many residents affected by the proposed routes are having difficulty understanding the maps published online
and are calling for a more traditional approach to the consultation. One idea being floated is to place the maps on display in a public building, like previous ones, but invite residents to examine the drawings by appointment. These, residents say, will help them get a better understanding of what is proposed and at the same time adhere to current COVID-19 restrictions. Local man Chris Kelliher has visited over 100 households in the area and says the majority are left in the dark about what is happening. “We need to defer the consultation until we are allowed look at the maps properly, what is the sudden rush in getting this over the line so fast,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “At least put the drawings on display and let us look at them, give every house a half-hour slot and let the people see for themselves. This is going to affect everyone in Tiernaboul but noone had full understanding of what is going on.”

FUNFAIR:Bird’s Euroshow visited Killarney every year between 1937 and 2019 but Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has raised concerns about a potential visit this year amid the risk of spreading the Delta COVID-19 variant.
Funfair operators not made aware of Chamber’s concerns
Operators of Bird’s Euroshow have hit out against Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce after the business body issued a statement that it was concerned the funfair was intending setting up in the town this summer. | By Sean Moriarty Don Bird, the grandson of the funfair’s founder William Bird, was unaware of the Chamber’s concerns or that they had issued a statement on the matter until contacted by the Killarney Advertiser. “In view of the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, with the town very gradually reopening for business following several months of lockdown, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce is very concerned that Bird’s Euroshow intends to set up in the town in the coming weeks,” said the chamber statement. “In the current circumstances, from a public health perspective and to ensure the safest possible summer for locals and visitors, the Chamber is not in favour of the amusements setting up in the Fair Field car park. Any gathering of young people in such an environment would give real cause for concern. Precedent alone would indicate that it would be a major congregation point for teenagers.” Bird’s Euroshow has included Killarney in its summer tour since 1937. The funfair traditionally operates in the Fair Field car
park in July – usually in conjunction with the Killarney Races Summer meeting. It then moves on to Puck Fair, the Rose of Tralee and finishes its summer season at Listowel Races in September. Bird’s EuroShow is not a member of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce but is a member of similar bodies in Tralee and Limerick. “This is not how a body that represents the business community should act,” Mr Bird told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am not prepared to make any statement until I sit down and read this and discuss it with colleagues.” The chamber defended its stance, saying it was putting the safety of visitors and townspeople first amid worries that the Delta variant of COVID-19 is more likely to spread amongst teenagers and younger adults. “While an amusement park of this nature attracts young people, we now know that the Delta variant attacks young people and, given the current unavailability of a COVID-19 vaccination for that generation, the risks would be too great,” the Chamber statement added.
Well-known Killarney businessman Tim Jones has been appointed as the chair of Killarney Celtic Football Club. He takes over from Paul Sherry. Mr Sherry’s five-year stint should have ended this time last year but because of COVID-19 restrictions the club was unable to host an AGM and he stayed on for one extra year. Tim, who runs two busy butchers shops in town, was the club’s most recent vicechair, a role that has now been taken over by Paul. “The old adage that says if you need something don’t ask someone that’s busy is certainly true of the new Chair of Killarney Celtic Tim Jones,” said club PRO Padraig Harnett. Tributes were paid to Liam Shine who

Coolcorcoran residents raise concerns over by-pass The residents of Coolcorcoran and Deerpark is the latest group to voice concerns on the proposed new N22 Killarney to Farranfore road project. They issued a statement on Thursday evening just as the Killarney Advertiser was closing for press. Today, Friday, is the final day to lodge concerns to Kerry County Council, but, like most other locals, they are unhappy with the online format and want a public meeting on the matter. They have raised issues on the potential destruction of native woodlands and fauna. “We are devastated over the possible destruction of this woodland area in our region which is home to many species. In addition to this we are concerned for the noise pollution created in the area which
can have significant impact on human health as well as pressures to wildlife and ecosystems. "We would like to call for a public meeting to express our concerns in person,” said a group statement issued to the Killarney Advertiser. Locals invited Killarney Green Party representative Diarmaid Griffin to examine the proposed routes. “On meeting landowners in the Coolcorcoran area of Killarney, I got a comprehensive tour of the landscape that will be impacted by options B, C and D of the N22 project,” said Griffin. “The proposed woods will be dissecting prime farmland, the dark wood and the River Deenagh. The woodlands and River Deenagh form part of the Killarney National Park, MacGillycuddy Reeks and Caragh River Catchment Special Area of Conservation.”

Killarney teen on Irish team in dancing world cup in Russia A Killarney teen has been selected as a member for the Irish team to compete in the Acrobatic Rock-n-Roll European Championship and World Cup international dancing coemption. | By Sean Moriarty The event is taking place this week at the Olympic Park in Sochi, Russia. Denis Jarosz from Ballydowney has been selected as part of the Dance Sport Federation of Ireland team for the week long competition. He and his dance partner Justyna Wiecek from Dublin will compete in the Junior Category for up to 17-year-olds. He is the only Kerry-based competitor in the six-strong Irish team. He is a member the Killarney-based Empire School of Polish Dance. ‘They are real young athletes, and to prepare for the European Championship and World Cup in Russia they have five days of training each week which include intensive physical work, gym-
nastics, stretching and of course working on specific acrobatic rock-n-roll steps and moves combined in separate performance which they will show at the competition. Ireland is a very young country in acrobatic rock-n-roll but developing very fast and starts showing some good results in this high demanding kind of sport,” said Empire School of Polish Dance coach Kasia Witkowska. “It is a great opportunity and also a big responsibility to represent Ireland in such a huge competition. Two years have passed since the last real-life competition and kids are working hard to be ready to represent Ireland. It was a difficult time because every athlete need competitions and needs a place to show what they achieved and worked for but finally the life is going back to normal.”

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney

Spoilt for choice at this time of year We are really spoilt for choice at this time of year, with so many colours and flowers to choose from, be it perennials, annuals, shrubs, they are all looking their best! Two plants which are absolutely worth adding to your garden are Alstroemeria and Campanula. Alstroemeria are also known as Peruvian lillies, and until recently we really only saw them in flower shops. However, they are now available in abundance and are well worth investing in. Flowering freely throughout the summer, they come in whites, yellows, oranges, reds and pinks. There are tall varieties and dwarf ones, those with red foliage, and those with variegated foliage. All do well in our weather, but do not like to be waterlogged in the winter. The dwarf varieties, the ‘Princess' series, are ideal for pots, staying at a height of about 15cm and guaranteed to come back year after year. A pretty variety to try is ‘Indian Summer', its bright orange and yellow flowers contrasting beautifully with it’s dark foliage. With its bright green foliage and pure white flowers, ‘White Magic' is a favourite of mine. Campanulas are a well-known garden staple and are available in every size and shape you may need. Tall varieties include C.latifolia, a broadleaved variety. It reaches up to five-feet and has very large blue or purple bells. C. alliariifolia is also a tall variety, with elegant spires of pure white bells. It is a beauty! C. ‘Kent Belle’ is a very popular campanula. Grown in many gardens. It has large bells in a rich shade of purply-blue. C. persicifolia grows to 80cm and is possibly the truest blue of all campanulas. It has delicate
bright green foliage. A mid-sized campanula is C. punctate, and two to look out for, are ‘Cherry Bells’ and ‘Pantaloons’. The former has rich burgundy bells, the latter double bells in mauve with purple spots gracing the bottom frill. C. glomerata is a popular choice also, bearing tight, globe shaped clusters of flowers. Campanulas really come into their own as a groundcover, rockery plants and wall plants. C. portenschlagiana is an old variety, one which is ideal for rockeries, and which self seeds and finds a stronghold in any crevice. It has rich deep blue cup shaped flowers and a mat forming growth habit. C. garganica is another low grower, with azure blue star shaped flowers. It is ever-green in Kerry. In general, campanulas are easy to grow. They are native to alkaline regions within Europe, and I have noticed that adding a little horticultural lime produces much better flowers. Well-drained soil is essential, and sunlight is certainly preferable. Repeat flowering can be encouraged by cutting back the plant after flowering. If you are hoping to establish plants in a wall, it is best to plant them in the crevices in autumn, giving them a chance to establish before summer. Most campanulas are sold when in flower, so be patient, buy the plants, repot into bigger pots, then in October divide them and put them into the gaps of the wall for a good display next spring.

COVID vaccine statistics Just 4% of people say they are unsure whether they will get vaccinated for COVID-19, according to the results of the latest tracker survey by Ipsos MRBI for the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association (IPHA).
The number of people who either intend to get vaccinated for COVID-19, or who have already received a vaccine for the disease, has risen to 89%. The results show that 34% of people will take a COVID-19 vaccine. But when combined with those who have received a
COVID-19 vaccine, or 55% of the sample, that number rises to 89%. Between January and June, the number of people who said they either won’t get vaccinated for COVID-19 or were unsure about taking a vaccine has declined. In January, 7% said they would refuse a COVID-19 vaccine and 18% were unsure. This month, 6% overall say they will refuse a COVID-19 vaccine and 4% are unsure. The results come as people between 35 and 39 can register for COVID-19 vaccination. Last week, the health au-
thorities administered about 320,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine. Bernard Mallee, Director of Communications and Advocacy at IPHA, said: “Our health services have responded with pace and efficiency to the enormous challenge of rolling out a mass vaccination programme. They deserve huge credit for that. Equally, the global scientific community, and the experts working in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, have been able to discover and make safe and effective vaccines to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Plastic waste into vanilla flavouring Researchers have discovered a method of converting plastic waste into vanillin, the primary component of vanilla flavor.
Four year old buys 918 ice creams A four year old boy bought 918 SpongeBob ice creams for €2,200 on Amazon without his mother's knowledge. Noah Bryant ordered 51 casesof ice creams, all shipped to his aunt's house. The mother of three was unable to return the ice creams because Amazon refused to accept them and as a result Jennifer Bryant, an NYU social work student, was left responsible for the bill. Jennifer Bryant made a facebook post to which Bryant's NYU Silver School of Social Work classmate Katie Schloss noticed the post and quickly texted her buddy, asking if she could Venmo a contribution. Schloss then put up a GoFundMe campaign to assist cover the costs.
The total cost of the ice creams had been raised in less than 24 hours and more than 1000 people raised over €21,000. Bryant wrote, "As a parent to a child living with ASD (autism spectrum disorder), all additional donations will go towards Noah's education and additional supports. We cannot thank you enough. Truly. Thank you all for your donations. We really appreciate your support. We're currently in the process of narrowing down a private school for Noah to attend in the Fall. We've also got word that Amazon is donating the €2,200 to Autism Speaks on my behalf in place of a refund. All donations that have been raised on this fundraiser have been sent to me directly. We are forever grateful for everything. We love you all."
Scientists from the University of Edinburgh discovered that the ubiquitous bacterium E. coli may be used to convert post-consumer plastic into vanillin in a sustainable manner. Vanillin, the molecule responsible for the majority of vanilla's aroma and flavor, may be produced naturally from vanilla beans or synthesized. According to The Guardian, over 85% of vanillin is now produced from chemicals derived from fossil fuels. Vanillin may be found in a wide range of foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, cleaning goods, and herbicides, and demand is "increasing quickly". The global demand for vanillin exceeded 37,000 tonnes in 2018, according to the authors, and is expected to surpass 59 000 tonnes by 2025, with a revenue projection of $734 million. They noted that while demand for natural vanillin vastly outnumbers supply from vanilla beans, methods for synthesizing it (synthetic vanillin) have been extensively researched. The change, according to the authors, has the potential to enhance the circular economy, which strives to reduce waste, keep goods and resources in use, and have beneficial effects on synthetic biology. Your vanilla cakes and ice creams may well be created from plastic waste in the future.

She’s the real deal, a bright spark and such a professional. We’re excited to have her as our host this year with her West of Ireland charm and no doubt there’ll be the cúpla focail on the night to welcome our guests”.
Hosted by Irish Museum of Modern Art, it will take place at Royal Hospital Kilmainham, in Dublin, on Saturday, July 3. The event will include Gavin James, Lyra, Denise Chaila, Wild Youth, Sharon Shannon and Wyvern Lingo performing full sets, and will be will be hosted by The 2 Johnnies. will be given details in advance. Catherine Martin, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, said, “As you know I am taking a cautious but steady approach to the reopening of the live music. Keeping everyone safe is the primary consideration for this Government. To advance trials the festival on July 3 will have 3,500 fans. Social distancing will be reduced to one metre and I am now also introducing rapid testing for concert-goers and staff. The purpose of these events is to build the road back to the safe and full recovery of live music and sporting events and establish confidence in the guidance and event management protocols developed for the sector.
A four day working week? The Government is to research the potential and impacts of a four day working week in Ireland. Research has been carried out in other jurisdictions to give consideration to how, for example, a move to a four day week would impact on greenhouse gas emissions, environmental pollution and resource / energy consumption, macro-economic impacts, employment levels, competitiveness of businesses and staff productivity, gender inequality, staff well-being and job satisfaction. This new research call will provide an opportunity to address these impacts in the specific context of the Irish economy. Tánaiste and Minister For Enterprise and
Employment Leo Varadkar said, “It’s too early to say whether a four-day working week could work in Ireland. The idea is ambitious, to achieve the same outcomes and productivity, for the same pay with 20% fewer hours worked. I can see how that might work for some roles but it’s hard to see how it would work in others particularly in health, education and manufacturing for example. But we need to keep an open mind when it comes to innovations in the world of work. The two Departments will formally open the call on 1 July 2021, at which time the full evaluation criteria, Terms and Conditions, etc. will be provided and it is anticipated that the call will remain open to Proposals until 15 July 2021.

Answer: The EU Digital COVID Certificate (previously called the Digital Green Certificate) will help citizens move freely and safely within the EU during the COVID-19 pandemic. The DCC is for EU citizens, residents and their families and non-EU citizens who are legally staying or residing in the EU. It will be proof that you have either: • Been vaccinated against COVID-19 • Received a negative test result • Recovered from COVID-19 Being vaccinated will not be a pre-condition to travel. What information will be included on the DCC? The certificate will only contain necessary key information including: • Your name • Your date of birth • The date of issue • Relevant information about your vaccine or test or recovery • A unique identifier number The DCC will be free and available in both digital and paper formats. The certificate has a QR code to avoid fraud. Individual member states will decide how the DCC will be used as part of national public health measures. If you
are travelling abroad you should always check the entry requirements before you travel. The system will be used throughout the EU and will also be open to Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland. You can check the European Centre of Disease Control’s map (EU traffic lights system) before you travel abroad. You can read more about the EU Digital COVID Certificate (DCC) on citizensinformation.ie. __________________________________________________ During COVID-19, you can find comprehensive integrated information online at citizensinformation.ie/ covid19/ and you can get daily updates on what’s changed on Twitter at @citizensinfo. BLACK SPOT: Glanbehy Bridge on the ring of Kerry will be realigned.
N70 Glanbehy bridge: virtual display of route options One of the most notorious traffic black spots on the Ring of Kerry could soon be a thing of the past. Kerry County Council has developed a number of route options for the N70 Glanbehy Bridge Road Project, with details due to be announced today (Friday) in an online webinar, to which members of the public are invited. This project has been developed in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and involves the provision of a realigned section of the N70 National Secondary road in the vicinity of Glenbeigh National School. “The key objective of the scheme is to increase safety for everyday road users including vulnerable road users. The alignment of this section of carriageway
will be upgraded to meet current design and safety standards,” said a council official. “In addition, specific provision will be made for cyclists and pedestrians along the new section of roadway. Increased ease of access and exit to the N70 from Glenbeigh National School will also be addressed by this scheme. The improvement will allow for safer use of this section of the N70 particularly during the peak tourist months of summer.” Three prospective route options will be outlined during the webinar which will take place today at 4.00pm. Participants are asked to register in advance on the Kerry County Council website (www.kerrycoco.ie) and questions or comments can also be submitted ahead of the presentation.

Kerry artist’s new Kerry eco-social project exhibition takes a wry approved for funding look at the art world | By Michelle Crean
A South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) led project has been approved for funding under the European Innovation Partnerships (EIP) initiative of Ireland’s Rural Development Programme.
| By Michelle Crean In the exhibition 'I have made a place', Kerry visual artist Laura Fitzgerald creates a place – a smallholding – to examine ideas of art and art practice. In a time of scarcity and Brexit, the artist probes the difficult task of being an artist through drawings, sounds, video, and a story that conjures a restless figure who is obsessed with cutting turf. "'I have made a place' comprises new large-scale scroll drawings, video works, and striking bale forms – sculptural drawings and sound installations from which competing voices emerge and invite the visitor to listen, look, and perhaps have a bit of a laugh," Laura said. It's the third exhibition in Crawford Art Gallery's artist-directed programme, which aims to platform the development of an artist's career, support their current research interests, and connect with audiences through a collaboration with the Gallery, its site, and collections. In this instance, Fitzgerald occupies three former teaching spaces and incorporates the collection work, 'Into the Mire' (2011) by Nigel Rolfe, in a series of video screenings, which also includes Fitzgerald’s own Rolfian Rising (2021) and Searching for Robin (2021). The exhibition concludes with 'A Mountain for Venice' (2021), Fitzgerald’s largest – to date – and most recent scroll drawing.
EXHIBITION: Kerry artist Laura Fitzgerald has an exhibition 'I have made a place' in the Crawford Art Gallery.
In addition to featuring Rolfe’s 'Into the Mire', Laura Fitzgerald's 'I have made a place' is accompanied by a commissioned text by Sally O'Reilly and a Learn & Explore programme. A special 'In Conversation' event between Fitzgerald and John Strutton will take place during the exhibition's run until September 19 at Crawford Art Gallery. Fitzgerald’s limited edition risoprint companion publication, 'The Restless Bogman' (2021), will also be available to purchase via the gallery shop and online. Laura's 'I have made a place' also features in the Cork Midsummer Festival 2021.
The project focuses on addressing biodiversity within the farming landscape and also inclusion and accessibility within rural communities. The project will seek to implement biodiversity actions as proven in existing EIP projects on host farms within the Kerry Social Farming (KSF) Network. These actions will include hedgerow management, actions for pollinators and habitat management for birds and bats. Alongside practical actions, training will be offered in habitat management and biodiversity for both host farmers and participants. A system of monitoring and training to maintain standards in biodiversity will be provided to both host farmers and KSF participants and supported through the existing KSF team. Other partners involved in the initiative include NEWKD, Representative from KSF working Group, Biosphere Officer – Kerry Biosphere Reserve, Transition Kerry, GreenBelt, Biodiversity Partners, Host Farm representatives, Kerry County Council, Teagasc and the NPWS. Expected outcomes include an increase in biodiversity managed areas on participating host farms and ensuring a wide cohort of people will engage in this biodiversity project; learning and
Over 140 degree courses to choose at Munster Technological University | By Michelle Crean With the establishment of Munster Technological University (MTU), there has never been a more exciting time to study in Cork and Kerry. With six campuses across the southwest region, 140+ degree courses and a student body of more than 18,000, making the decision to succeed at MTU has never been easier. Courses offered at MTU cover a diverse range of disciplines including Business, Marketing, Accounting, Culinary Arts, Hospitality, Tourism, Sports & Leisure, Social Sciences & Education, Engineer-
ing, Biological, Physical & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nursing & Healthcare, Computer Science, Art & Creative Media, Music, Theatre & Drama and Maritime. A thriving student experience also exists at MTU with 100+ clubs and societies to join locally and global study opportunities with over 120 leading colleges having links to the University. “Our new university prides itself on the quality and relevance of its academic programmes and our continuous course development," Dr Brendan O’Donnell, Kerry Campus Vice President Academic Affairs and Registrar said. "Each of our courses is developed in close consultation with industry, resulting in relevant and career-focused
qualifications for graduates.” MTU ensures that students are at the core of its activities with a dedicated team of student support services. An integral part of the many programmes on offer for CAO applicants is work placement and industry projects, which allow students to experience authentic work scenarios. This experience results in work-ready graduates with over 90% of honours degree graduates securing work or pursuing further education opportunities such as Master or PhD studies within six months of graduating.
INCLUSION
Inclusion is a key value of MTU - a uni-
sharing their knowledge and information about the positive role of biodiversity in farming throughout Kerry. Ongoing monitoring of the biodiversity on the participating farms will be undertaken by the KSF participants and it is hoped the project will also promote a greater embeddedness of best ecological practices among participating farms, initially, and across the county, subsequently. Welcoming the approval of the project for funding, SKDP CEO Noel Spillane noted that Kerry has been to the fore in Ireland since 2013 in developing the social farming concept and now has more than 39 participants involved on some 30 host farms. “This project will deliver outcomes that go beyond the farm habitat improvements made during the project timeframe,” Noel said, adding that it will offer training to farmers and participants of KSF throughout the project. The development of a biodiversity map of the farm, which will be updated during the final project review and provided to all participating farms, will give them the tools to continue managing areas for biodiversity, he added. Noel also noted that a communications plan designed to include the wider community in this project will be put in place to help ensure a wider uptake of these actions will be encouraged in non-participating farms and non-farming landowners, thus increasing the reach of the project and supporting improved biodiversity management within the community. The project will run for a 12 month period beginning later this year. versity that offers a full spectrum of programmes, from apprenticeships and work-based qualifications to PhDs, and also provides learning that is accessible and diverse. This commitment to access and inclusion from the widest possible range of backgrounds sets MTU apart and empowers all, who participate in the MTU education and experience, to embrace life and career opportunities. MTU’s commitment to this agenda has been recognised through the awarding of over €20 million under the Irish Government’s ‘Human Capital Initiative’ for the cutting-edge delivery of programmes in Engineering and Cyber Skills. For further information about any of MTU’s wide range of full-time and part-time programmes visit www.mtu. ie or contact the Admissions Office on 066 7145638 or 021 4335040. Think safely – think bike The BikeSafe Programme, a Roads Safety initiative being run by An Garda Síochána that is specifically aimed at motorcyclists, has been relaunched. It is an initiative conducted by many European Police Services to promote road safety, enable motorcyclists to become safer, more competent and confident riders and encourage progression to accredited post-test training. The programme offers a workshop on topics such as hazard awareness and an on the road assessment ride accompanied by an Advanced Garda Motorcyclist. The workshops are open to all motorcyclists holding a full motorcycle driving licence and are free of charge. BikeSafe will be beneficial to experienced bikers and those returning to motorcycling after a few years’ absence but especially useful for those who have only recently passed their test.
BikeSafe will be run as a pilot scheme from June to September 2021 by Roads Policing Division, Dublin Castle. There will be limited places available to 100 participants over this time. It is envisaged should the pilot be successful that the initiative will be rolled out nationwide in 2022. Garda Adrian Corcoran , DMR Roads Policing Unit, Dublin Castle, said "As a Garda Motorcyclist and a Motorcycle enthusiast I know how enjoyable riding a Motorcycle can be. From my experience I also know how vulnerable we are on the road. Through our BikeSafe workshops we aim to raise hazard awareness and create a desire for you to progress to accredited post-test training. We will provide detailed feedback on the strengths and areas for development of your riding. BikeSafe is a relaxed workshop with the aim of making your motorcycling safer and more enjoyable.”
MOTORCYCLE SAFETY: In 2020 there were a total of 186 fatal collisions leading to 200 fatalities, and 28 of these fatalities were riding a motorcycle

Motorcycle racing returns – two local racers in action this weekend Championship motorcycle racing makes a return this weekend and there are two Killarney-based riders in action on both sides of the Irish Sea. Kevin Coyne and Frank Doherty are poised for the 2021 season which gets underway in Ireland and Britain on Saturday morning. Coyne will make his much anticipated debut in National Superstock 600cc class after a season in the British Junior Championship. He will ride a new Kawasaki Ninja 636 in this weekend’s season-opener at Oulton Park. Doherty, who has not raced since the final round of the Dunlop Irish Masters in October 2019, has entered this year’s Irish championship on his Yamaha R1. “I refreshed the bike fully over that winter and went to Spain for two pre-sea-
son tests at Almeria and Cartagena. The tests were very positive which gave me great motivation for 2020. As we returned to Ireland COVID-19 halted everything so the bike sat in a friend's shed on the bench needing only an oil change,” he said . “I'm excited to get back on the bike this weekend and see what 200 horse power feels like again. I will certainly be at a disadvantage not having taken part in any track-days that have been running for the past few months now but we'll ease back into it and see what happens.” He was second in the Super Bike Cup championship two years ago. RETURN TO ACTION: Frank Doherty was second in the 2019 Dunlop Irish Masters

Good Times Don’t Last Forever CRYPTO
The S&P 500's steady climb higher was interrupted last week, reversing course to fall nearly 2%, the biggest weekly drop since February. The Federal Reserve acted as the catalyst for this latest bout of volatility. Last Wednesday, the FED issued a revised outlook, signalling that interest rates are set to increase sooner than previously projected due to higher inflation forecasts. While this FED adjustment resulted in a momentary pull back, market participants quickly reverted to their default setting of unwavering optimism, with the market hitting new all-time highs just five days later. While unrelenting positivity is enough to sustain the current investing utopia, history suggests that volatility will return at some point in the future. So instead of basking in the glory of your unrealized gains, use these periods of low volatility to prepare. Diversify, take profits on certain stocks that have no-
Cryptos pulled back once again as China continues its clampdown on miners and the Crypto space as a whole. The recent volatility has wiped out all of bitcoin's 2021 profits, with Bitcoin briefly falling below 30,000 a coin. The cryptocurrency has now lost more than 50% from its mid-April highs of almost $65,000.
tably appreciated and implement some downside protection.
EQUITIES Has the rotation into 'Value' run its course? So-called value stocks, expected to benefit from the economic recovery, have outperformed in 2021, but this rotation trade has been out of favour in recent weeks. Growth stocks, including the major tech names like Apple and Microsoft, have rallied since the Fed announced a slightly more aggressive stance on future rate hikes last week. The S&P growth index has added almost 2% since the announcement, compared with a drop of nearly 2% in the value index.
INFLATION
Michael O’Connor CFA is an investment consultant based in the Cayman Islands with a decade of experience within the financial industry.
With the S&P Value index up 13% yearto-date, much of the re-opening trade has arguably been priced in the market. With that said, specific sectors such as energy and financials may still have room to run.
Commodities like copper slumped last week while Lumber recorded its worst week in history, falling 18%. Higher commodity prices have played a pivotal role in the recent inflation jump. This pullback in commodity prices suggests that the supply chain bottlenecks may be clearing in certain sectors of the economy. From a global perspective, the 're-opening' is still in its infancy, but these price adjustments suggest the inflation we are currently experiencing is, in fact, transient in nature.
Insurance for Cafés, Coffee Shops and Restaurants As the hospitality sector re-opens for outdoor service followed shortly by indoor dining, I will outline the various covers and items to consider for cafes, coffee shops and restaurants. Most insurers will apply different rates to each trade and usually will define based upon number of covers, type of food served, hours of trade and deep fat fryer usage. Material damage cover for Buildings, fixtures and fittings, stock, computers, and other assets that your business owns. Covers will include fire, flood, escape of water, theft, and storm among other perils. Cover extensions are available such as fire brigade charges, signage and goods in transit. Money cover. This is a standard section of all hospitality policies. It is likely we
will see a culture change post pandemic due to reduced cash usage but the extent of this change is not yet known. For now hospitality policies will cover the loss of cash & cheques. The amount of cash covered can be increased depending on safe and security details. Personal assault cover can be included when carrying cash to the bank. Employers, Public and Products liability. All hospitality insurances include liability cover. Employer’s liability is covered up to a maximum of €13 Million and depending on the business description can be based on employee numbers
and/or wages. Public liability can be selected within a range of €1.3 Million to €6.5 Million and covers your legal liability in the event that you are negligent and required to pay compensation for bodily injuries or damage to third party property. Your trade & projected turnover will determine the rate charged. Products liability provides cover if someone is injured by a product that you have sold. Business interruption covers consequential loss of gross profits following an insured event such as a fire. It is important to review your gross profits sum insured on an annual basis. Other covers that can be added include seasonal increases in stock at specified times during the year, loss of licence

Surge in property sales since restrictions lifted
The residential property market has experienced a surge in activity since restrictions on the industry were lifted in May.
Homebuyers who have seen house prices surge during the pandemic now face a further, potentially ‘significant’, rise due to the housing shortage, the Central Bank has warned. Pent up demand and a shortage of supply have resulted in homes selling for 10% or more over their guide prices in the past year. In the year to April, the cost of houses and apartments rose 4.5% nationally, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO) residential property price index.
The Central Bank expect the trend of rising house prices to continue due to the disruption to new house building during the pandemic and the build up of savings of some households. ‘’With existing supply constraints, a high degree of pent-up demand and a recovery in the flow of mortgage credit, the conditions for significant upward momentum to house prices in the months ahead appear to exist’’, it said. A report conducted by the CSO has found that property buyers, including first time purchasers, previous owners and investors, are now purchasing residential property significantly later in life. The median age for a sole purchaser rose
from 34 to 42 between 2010 and 2019 while for joint purchasers, it rose from 35 to 38 over the same period. The Central Bank lending rules have had an impact on this as has the significant increase in the cost of renting in Ireland. Another recent study (ESRI) found that home ownership by the age of 30 was 60% for those born in the 1960s compared to just 32% for those born in the early 80’s. These national trends are evident on a local level with the significant shortage of supply being a dominant factor in rising prices. ‘Pent up demand and a shortage of supply of available properties is resulting in significantly higher prices be-

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL CAO change of mind?
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Summer is here! Summer is well and truly here, with the summer solstice last Monday. This date marks the official beginning of summer, which hopefully means holidays and summer clothes. It's been a long year and what better way to get the body feeling the summer vibes then getting the legs and bum detoxed. If you're feeling unmotivated and need to get the blood flowing this is a great treatment to enhance any exercise routine, or help to get you motivated to start exercise. Cellulite is a very common, in both large and small size ladies. It really is a problem for people of all sizes. It's a harmless skin condition that causes lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttock. The condition is most prevalent in women but men can have it also. Many people try, with variable success, to improve the appearance of their skin through weight loss, exercise, massage and creams marketed as a solution to cellulite. With a combination of exercise and ECM treatment you will be guaranteed to see results. A lot of time sitting can cause the lymph and blood flow to become sluggish. It's time to get moving and start to feel amazing again. The award-winning, medical grade CACI ECM – Electro Cellulite Massager - gives instant lifting and contouring on the buttocks and toning of the thighs. This treatment will improve the appear-
ance of cellulite and break down fatty deposits. Underneath the dermis, outer layer of skin there are three specific layers of fat cells. To treat cellulite, it is necessary to stimulate the area in order to reduce the volume of fat cells that has become stored and to kick start the blood flow and circulation which has become metabolically sluggish. It uses a faradic current to stimulate connective tissue surrounding the pockets of stored fat. This stimulates the lipolysis and the fat cells naturally start to release the fats that have been stored over the long lockdowns. Our unique ECM combines therapeutic massage , with the effectiveness of micro-current therapy , helps to lift the bum , loose inches and reduce cellulite. There are 24 micro current conductive rollers on the massager and it really works to the contours of the body. The treatment takes 30 minutes and we recommend two to three sessions a week for five weeks to get the best results, followed by monthly visits to keep it under control. The treatment does depend on each client and it is also important to do the homecare to get the best results. Some clients have reported smoother skin and a tighter, brighter complexion on the legs. • For more information or book appointment call Jill 064-6632966

Your questions answered
With the July 1 deadline for CAO fast approaching lots of students and parents have been in touch with questions so I’ve put together the most common queries which will provide important reminders to everyone on the critical points to think about will using the Change of Mind facility. This deadline is absolutely final so whatever changes you wish to make must be done by 5.15pm on July 1.
DO I HAVE TO FILL UP ALL 20 OPTIONS ON THE LEVEL 8 AND LEVEL 7/6 CHOICES?
This is your own personal choice. By filling up all 20 choices you are giving yourself twenty chances to secure a place when the Round One Offers come out on September 7 or in subsequent rounds. My advice is to fill as many as you possible can on both lists. The two lists work completely independently of each other so the choices you make on one list will in no way impact on the choices on the other list. The only time you have to choose between them is if you receive an offer from both lists.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COURSES ON THE LEVEL 8 AND LEVEL 7/6 LISTS?
The levels refer to the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). The courses listed on Level 8 are Honours Bachelor Degrees, Level 7 are Ordinary Bachelor Degrees and Level 6 are Higher Certificates. In the case of most Level 7/6 courses there are progression routes onto Level 8 courses as an ‘Add-on’ or once you achieve the required result in exams in the Level 7/6 programme. Often students only fill up Level 8 courses and this is a mistake, it is really important to add in at least some options on both lists.
CAN I ADD IN A ‘RESTRICTED’ COURSE ON THE CHANGE OF MIND FACILITY AT THIS STAGE?
In general you can’t introduce restricted courses now but exceptions may be made. In the case of a restricted course which shares the exact same assessment procedures with a course you had applied for by the February 1 deadline, you may be permitted to introduce it on the Change of Mind but you need to consult with the relevant Higher Education Institution (HEI) before doing so.
WHY IS THE ORDER OF PREFERENCE SO IMPORTANT?
This is the most common mistake made by students, where they make assumptions about how the exams (or accredited grades) will go or what they think the points will be. The golden rule of the CAO
Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, and Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. She is also a Career Consultant. For details see www.mycareerplan.ie or follow MyCareerPlan on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
is that you must list your choices in order of preference not in the order of points. The reason for this is that the points each year are totally dependent on supply and demand and no one will know the points for 2021 until the day the Round 1 offers come out. For that reason it is a huge risk to try to second guess your own performance or what the points will be as points go up and down each year depending on how many students are interested in doing a course on any given year. So your favourite course in your favourite college should go in as number 1, second favourite goes in as number 2 and so on right down to your 10th choice. At the offer stage, you will receive an offer of the course highest up on you course list(s) that are eligible for. If you receive an offer of your first preference in Round 1, you will not be offered a course that is lower on your preference list in Rounds 2, 3 4 etc. However if you get an offer of your fourth preference in Round 1, you may still get offered your first, second or third preference, but never your fifth preference or lower.
THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF DISCUSSION ABOUT THE POINTS RISING THIS YEAR, DO YOU THINK THE POINTS WILL GO UP IN MOST COURSES?
As there is a higher number of applicants to CAO this year compared to previous years, it is likely to put pressure on points in certain areas. The pressure is higher in courses where places are more limited. It won’t be the case in all courses. There has already been a commitment to allocate at least 4,500 extra college places with the promise of more. The best approach to take is to include the courses you really want in the order that you really want them but make sure you have included courses that you know you are capable of getting in that mix.

Irish job opportunities in EU institutions Killarney MEP Seán Kelly, who is a former secondary-school teacher, is working to increase awareness of EU career opportunities among students. “A common misconception is that the EU only employs people from a limited range of professional backgrounds. That is not the case at all. The opportunities available are as wide-ranging as the work of the EU, and there’s a demand for everyone from scientists and lawyers to IT specialists and economists,” he said. “The Brexit negotiations showed us how important it is for the Irish perspective to be understood in the EU. We need Irish people in the EU institutions to ensure that Ireland maintains its influence.” “We are fast approaching the 50year anniversary of Irish membership of the EU. To date, we have been very well represented. However, our numbers are starting to drop.”

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.
JESUS May your Sacred Heart Lord Jesus, be praised, glorified and honoured throughout the whole world now and forever. Repeat this 3 times.
THANKSGIVING TO SAINT JUDE St. Jude come to my assistance in my need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities particularly (mention request) and that I may praise God with you and the elect throughout eternity. I promise you O Blessed Jude to be ever mindful of this great favour and I will never cease to honour you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my powers to encourage devotion to you. Amen. Say for 3 days and publish immediately. Favour granted after 3 days.
PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit You make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I in this short dialogue I want to thank you for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual Glory. Amen. (Say this prayer three consecutive days without stating the request, after the 3rd day the request will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your request is granted.)
Sadly missed and dearly loved by all your Grandchildren.
NOVENA TO ST. CLAIRE Ask St. Claire for 3 favours, one business, two impossible and say nine Hail Mary’s for nine days with lighted candle. Pray whether you believe or not. Publish on ninth day. Powerful Novena. May the sacred heart of Jesus be praised, adored, glorified and loved today and every day throughout the whole world forever Amen. Say six times daily for nine days. Your request will be granted no matter how difficult it may seem. Favour publication must be promised. JOR
NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.

Sadly missed by your wife Joan, son Seamuis, daughters Lily and Maureen, sons in law, daughters in law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
PRAYER FOR PROTECTION Father, I come to you, through your son Jesus, I believe He is the son of God, died on the cross for all my sins, rose from the dead and I now confess, Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I truly believe this and when I die, I will go straight to heaven to be with you forever. Jesus you said “You will hear about wars and stories of wars that are coming, about famines and earthquakes in different parts of the world, that there will be increased evil in the world”. But you said not to worry about it, that you would protect those that would trust in you. You, Lord, are my protection. I have made you God most high, my place of safety. Nothing bad will happen to me, no disaster will come near me or my home, you will put your angel in charge of me to watch over me, wherever I go. Pray out loud every day, Each person must say and believe the prayer for themselves.
MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted.

Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

Kerry manager Peter Keane must make some big calls as The Kingdom set sail on their 2021 All-Ireland quest MUNSTER SFC QUARTER-FINAL
_______________________________________________________________________________________
Kerry v Clare Saturday at 7pm Fitzgerald Stadium Live on Sky Sports
One hundred and thirty-seven minutes. A little over two hours. That’s how long Kerry’s championship lasted in 2020. The aim will be to get a little over two months out of it this time around but with no safety net in place, it’s impossible to look beyond the Munster quarter-final against an ever-improving and potentially dangerous Clare side. This Kerry team have been bitten once. They will be on high alert in The Park on Saturday. Over the course of a promising league campaign, which included a draw with the champions and blowout wins over Galway and Tyrone, plenty of players put their paws up for starting berths. Now, Peter Keane and his selectors have some huge calls to make, none more so than deciding who will contest the throw-in at 7pm tomorrow evening.
MORAN
In previous years, David Moran’s inclusion was a foregone conclusion so long as he was physically able, but there is a
growing sense that his selection is not quite set in stone. The veteran sat out the Tyrone drubbing a fortnight ago and apart from a fine first half against Galway (the first first half of the season) his form has, frankly, not been great. No one can deny Moran’s talent and the physical presence he provides but there are concerns now about his ability to get around the pitch at his age (he is 33 on Tuesday), especially given his history of serious injuries. As an elder statesman and one of a select few with senior All-Ireland medals to his name, he is a leader of this team. However, you have to wonder if, at times, he tries to assume too much responsibility, particularly in key moments. In two of the past three seasons, Moran has taken the last shot in an elimination game and has missed badly both times (Monaghan in 2018 and Cork in 2020). In the drawn match against Dublin in 2019, he took the ball into contact and turned it over, which resulted in the opposition getting the equalising free at the other end. Maybe it is unfair to highlight these individual errors – if you went through each of the aforementioned games you would see every single player making a mistake at one point or another. But it does seem as though Moran has de-

veloped a habit of trying to drag Kerry over the line almost singlehandedly. He is a terrific footballer who is capable of doing that, but at the same time he is not Kerry’s best player. In clutch moments, the ball should be in David Clifford’s hands 10 times out of 10. If that is literally impossible in a given situation, Seán O’Shea is next up. And I don’t think it’s an insult to David Moran to say that. Do Kerry have the midfielders to win without him? That’s debatable. Diarmuid O’Connor has made great strides this year and Kerry supporters are rightly enthused by the 22-year-old’s progress, but he isn’t the finished article just yet. Jack Barry and Adrian Spillane provide athleticism and physicality, but they can’t match Moran for sheer skill. Perhaps Keane will decide to start with the Rahilly’s man and finish with Barry or Spillane. It’s a major decision either way and one that could potentially define Kerry’s season.
FULL BACK
Elsewhere, Tadhg Morley’s place at full back might also be under threat all of a sudden. Jason Foley was Man of the Match at No. 3 against Tyrone and Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Tom O’Sullivan did very well either side of him. Morley was
rested from the start against Roscommon and was wrongly sent off just seconds after his introduction, which ruled him out of that league semi-final two weeks ago. It would be a very cruel way for him to lose his place if that’s the route that Keane and co. decide to go down, but Ó Beaglaoich and O’Sullivan could also feel hard done by if they’re the ones to miss out.
TONY BROSNAN
The other dilemma for Keane is in the full forward line where Killian Spillane and Tony Brosnan are the main candidates to partner in-form talisman David Clifford. Brosnan is expected to be available after recovering from a hand injury but, at the moment, Spillane seems to be the manager’s preferred option. Brosnan’s consistently electrifying form at club level for Dr Crokes effectively forced Keane to bring him into the fold last season; for whatever reason the manager appeared to be reluctant to do so up until that point. Brosnan has fared well, perhaps without truly exploding onto the scene in the manner he would have liked. Maybe this is simply down to the fact that he is playing next to the best forward in the country. David Clif-
ford is going to be Kerry’s first option on most attacking possessions, which means that whoever lines up alongside him is going to get far fewer touches than they normally would for their club. Brosnan shines for Crokes when he’s the main man. He gets the ball and it’s all about him. He can take on his marker, he can check back for a shot, he can play a one-two. It’s probably unreasonable to expect him to do the same thing and kick the same huge scores for Kerry when he’s seeing less of the ball. In fairness to Spillane, he thrives in this role as a second option. He is a real catch-and-shoot kicker – oftentimes he won’t even take a hop or a solo before shooting. Brosnan is just as capable of fulfilling this role because he’s so accurate. For the majority of counties, Spillane or Brosnan would be the main forward. To thrive for Kerry, however, they basically have to be David Clifford’s wingman. As for the half forward line, Paudie Clifford, Seán O’Shea, Dara Moynihan and Paul Geaney should start. Stephen O’Brien could be the one to miss out if Keane opts to bring in another inside forward in the mould of Spillane or Brosnan. The Kenmare player, who was sensational in 2019 before suffering an
injury setback in 2020, has struggled to find his feet of late. Tommy Walsh remains an ever-reliable impact substitute and Micheál Burns is also capable of coming in and doing a job.
SETTLED
The half back line of Paul Murphy, Gavin Crowley and Gavin White is fairly settled at this stage with newcomer Mike Breen a viable alternative if needs be. Jack Sherwood is also likely to see minutes late on. Between the posts, Shane Ryan looks set to return following a six-week layoff due to injury. Kieran Fitzgibbon did well enough in his stead but Ryan is sure to be Keane’s first choice for the business end of the season (if Kerry get that far). With that in mind, the more gametime the Rathmore man can get under his belt, the better. So, big decisions for Keane, Fitzgerald, Foley and Griffin to make ahead of Kerry’s first 2021 championship team announcement tonight. It might “only” be Day 1 and it might “only” be Clare, but the entire group will need to be completely focused to ensure that this campaign lasts longer than a just a couple of hours.

There is no such thing as an easy route to an All-Ireland
Kerry have shown signs of improvement but they must focus on Clare and not get carried away with themselves, writes Eamonn Fitzgerald So here it is. In less than 24 hours Kerry will set off on their 2021 championship mission to exorcise the demonic memory of that collapse to Cork last year, and to show that they are much better than that concession to defeat and that last-minute goal. The players and the management have had a long period for reflection and all the indications are positive that lessons have been learned in the bid for victory and restored pride in 2021. Kerry had a very good league campaign with an unbeaten run in the four games, retaining their NFL title - albeit shared with Dublin. The media has installed them as the only team likely to prevent Dublin winning an unprecedented seven–in-a-row. Too many Kerry supporters that I have met have moved from “they (Kerry) won’t be far away” (from Dublin) to predict that Dublin are not the force they were and that a resurgent Kerry will lift the Sam Maguire. Their logic is that Kerry are unbeaten, ramping up huge scores in all matches with a top-class forward line. They see the passage to August 29th in Croke Park as an easy one. At home to Clare tomorrow, they will win easily. Tipperary are not the force they were last year when they won the Munster title. They were relegated in the subsequent league. We know that Cork were not a good side last year, even if they did beat Kerry.
Now they have lost Seán Powter, their best defender, and sadly Ciarán Sheehan has had to retire at the age of 30 with recurring knee injuries after his spell in the AFL Down Under. The draw is favourable, avoiding Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final. So that logic leads to a Kerry v Dublin final and… wishful thinking.
TÓG GO BOG É
Festine lente. Tóg go bog é. There is no easy passage to an All-Ireland. The Kerry management is wise enough not to be taken in by this newfound optimism and by some of the media indicating that the new Kerry team is capable of beating Dublin. The whole 31 counties look to any team to beat Dublin and Kerry are the best bet to stop the Dubs, or so they say. Ulster will provide challengers in Donegal, Tyrone or possibly Monaghan now that they have Castleisland man Donie Buckley and Banty back on board after his three-month suspension, just like Dessie Farrell. First things first: don’t underestimate Clare. They have never won the All-Ireland Senior Championship or the National League and have just two Munster Championships to their name. However, they always make Kerry fight very hard for victory. Who will ever forget 1992 when they shocked Kerry to win the Munster final? Maybe that was retribu-
tion for the Milltown Massacre in 1979 at Milltown Malbay where they lost to Kerry on a score line of 1-9 to 9-21, a difference of 35 points. Current Clare manager Colm Collins has done a great job with this team and has guided them through a great league campaign. Declan O’Keeffe, the former Kerry and Rathmore goalkeeper, has assisted as goalkeeping coach. Clare’s star player is corner forward David Tubridy, a great scorer. If Tom O’Sullivan is marking him, he needs to give him his full attention, minding the house and not to be lured into racing up the field into attack. First things first.
LESSONS LEARNED
I have been impressed by the way that Peter Keane has learned from the harsh lessons v Cork in 2020. On that occasion the players must take the blame for the defeat. So, too, does the Kerry manager, as the team tactics of zonal defence and precious little man-to-man marking, as well as handing the initiative to Cork, backfired. I have been encouraged by Kerry in the 2021 league displays. Peter Keane has given game-time to many players and that was very commendable. He used the seven subs concession very wisely and I agree with his plea to the GAA to extend that experiment during the league on to the championship. To date, the GAA has not acceded to his request. In the high intensity of the modern game, players get tired very easily. Fresh legs can make all the difference. Most encouraging of all is the change in tactics. Kerry are playing their own game
and imposing it on all oppositions. They are moving the ball much faster using route 1 to goal, instead of that dreadful lateral passing. The forwards are brilliant and are delivering big time. They have scored 13-69 and no one has matched that. They also have the most feared scorer in the country. David Clifford has scored a personal tally of 6-20. That is great shooting and such consistency, averaging 10 points per game. Some teams hardly matched that wonderful individual scoring. He is the jewel in the Kerry crown. He has all the skills and more, much more, especially his steely determination to succeed when others are faltering all around him. Just like Jon Rahm, who was three shots behind going into Sunday last, the Spaniard overcame the whole field drilling by two mighty birdies in the last two holes from 17 feet on the 17th and then that match-winning 12 footer on the 18th. But it is not all David Clifford. There are plenty other good scorers, as we saw especially in the demolition of Tyrone. Midfield was a problem area last year, but there are better options for 2021. I expect the starting two will not be the finishing duo and that is the way to go for Kerry at the present time. The porous defence problem has been addressed on two fronts. Direct man marking is starting to reap dividends. They’re not there yet and some goals are still being leaked, but not to the same extent as happened in the past. I am much happier to see Jason Foley at full back, affording sub goalkeeper Kier-
57
25.6.2021 an Fitzgibbon better protection. There won’t be a big change in personnel from the six that started in Cork last year, but the impressive Mike Breen will figure in the deliberations. He may even start instead of Brian Ó Beaglaoich. The Mid Kerry man provides good cover in both the full back line and in the half back line. Jack Sherwood and Graham O’Sullivan will also provide defensive option, as subs. Diarmuid O’Connor is the number one option for midfield, where he can win primary ball. He is also young enough and rangy, well able to move forward and take his own score. Jack Barry, David Moran and Adrian Spillane are options to partner O’Connor. There are plenty options up front. The Clifford brothers and Dara Moynihan are in flying scoring form and are also great grafters. They will start. So too will Seán O’Shea, even if I expect more from him. Paul Geaney’s two goals against Tyrone will probably get him into the starting 15,
even if I have reservations about his role as a half forward. Stepen O’Brien is not able to cut through as easily in his trademark dashing runs as was his forte in the past, but he will be in the mix. Killian Spillane and Tony Brosnan (if he has recovered from the hand injury sustained in training) are proven scorers and may well be starting. Micheál Burns was very sharp, scoring two points in his short game-time v Tyrone. I am also impressed by Paul O’Shea and Joe O’Connor; they are promising. Ronan Buckley will make the panel, but unluckiest of all is James O’Donoghue, who has been plagued with injuries over the past few years. Tommy Walsh may come in for a short time.
UNCERTAIN
The road to Croker is long, perilous and uncertain. There are so many variables. Unexpected injuries especially to key players such as David Clifford… Banish the thought.

Cards – black, yellow and/or red – can be game-changing. Sin bins, penalties, bad calls by the referee and other factors can turn a game. Then it is all on the day and I am a supporter of a knock-out competition instead of the back-door. There is justification for hope as Kerry venture into the search for Sam. Hope will do for starters; that can convert to optimism later, but that is up for review after Sunday. The signs are good. They will beat Clare. Have they the potential to progress to Croke Park on August 29th and mount the steps of the Hogan Stand for, “A cháirde Ghael, is mór an onóir dom…”? Tóg go bog é. A win tomorrow will be ‘tosach maith leath na h-oibre’. One day at a time, one game at a time. Look what happened to Rory McIlroy on Sunday last. All going well early on sharing the lead at -4, but two bad holes on the back 9 finished his hopes. There’s many a slip between the cup and the lip, irrespective of the sport.
Kerry’s newfound optimism must be tempered with lashings of realism. I expect Kerry to win and that will suffice for tomorrow. Predict Peter Keane’s after-match yerra interview. “Yerra a few things ran lucky for us and only for one of our forwards scoring so much, the result would be much closer. We’ll take it and…” Throw-in is at 7pm. The game will be shown on Sky Sports, but not by the other channels. Three Kerry intercounty teams will be in action tomorrow. The hurlers can get Kerry off to the start of the winning treble by defeating Down in the Joe McDonagh Cup at 12.30pm in Austin Stack Park ,Tralee. After the rigours and steely determination of last week, the Kerry ladies are fancied to win the league final at Croke Park (5pm). The men should complete the treble at 7pm. Best of luck to all three teams. I wonder what are the odds on a Kerry treble tomorrow?
The Kerry management is wise enough not to be taken in by this newfound optimism and by some of the media indicating that this new Kerry team is capable of beating Dublin

Promotion on the line in Croker showdown Kerry are just an hour or so away from returning to the top tier of ladies football as they head to Dublin on Saturday for their Division 2 final against Meath. NATIONAL LEAGUE DIV 2 FINAL
_______________________________________________________________________________________
Kerry v Meath Saturday at 5pm Croke Park Live on TG4
Earning promotion back up to Division 1 was one of The Kingdom’s primary objectives for 2021 and following three consecutive wins in the group phase, and the semi-final victory over Monaghan, they now find themselves on the brink of reaching their goal. It took a dramatic shootout to separate
Kerry and Monaghan in the semi-final after Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh levelled matters at the death (1-14 to 2-11). Meath, meanwhile, saw off Cavan in the other semi with Emma Duggan kicking five points in a 0-13 to 0-9 win. The Royal County, who are the reigning intermediate champions, are on an upward trajectory and are seeking backto-back promotions. Kerry will be familiar with Saturday’s opponents following the recent meeting between the teams in Division 2A. Kerry prevailed with six points to spare
in that particular encounter (3-10 to 1-10) with Síofra O’Shea, Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Hannah O’Donoghue finding the back of the net in Páirc Tailteann. Unfortunately for Kerry managers Darragh Long and Declan Quill, O’Shea suffered a serious injury against Wexford in the final group game and has since been unavailable for selection. The Division 2 final will be staged as part of a double-header with the Division 1 decider between Dublin and Cork. The event will be used as a pilot for the return of spectators to sporting events, with 4,000 tickets released for general sale.
HURLERS
The Kerry hurlers get their Joe Mc-
Donagh Cup campaign underway with a home match against Down this Saturday in Austin Stack Park. Throw-in is at 12.30pm. The Kingdom are already missing a number of important players through injury, including star forward Jordan Conway, and the bad news is that several more are facing a race to be fit for the championship opener in Tralee. Only one team from the three-team pool will advance (to the final) so there is very little margin of error for Fintan O’Connor’s men; they will need to beat Down this weekend, injuries or no injuries. Last year’s finalists suffered a demoralising 20-point defeat to Carlow in their final league match, although that was a dead rubber. They will be hoping for a reversal of fortunes, and some home comforts, against Ulster opposition this time around. Meanwhile, after their 0-16 to 1-6 win over Limerick last weekend, the Kerry camogie team will face Cork in the Munster Junior Semi-Final on Saturday at 7.15pm in Lixnaw.

Cronin looking for win No. 4 in Alicante Kerry boxer Kevin Cronin will have his fourth professional fight in Spain this weekend and the light heavyweight is seeking his fourth consecutive win in the professional ranks. His opponent was not yet known at the time of going to print but Cronin will
be in action in the Guardamar Arena in Alicante on Saturday evening, with the fight being streamed on the Boxing Ireland Promotions Facebook page (facebook.com/loveirishboxing). Cronin, nicknamed The Kingdom Warrior, has announced that the bout will be shown live at the Harbour View restaurant in Killorglin. It is believed that around
100 fans will be present at the fight itself. The Milltown native’s stock is steadily rising in the boxing world. He picked up his third win in March of this year when he stopped Bosnian Boris Mrkonjic in Luxembourg. The fireman has his sights set on national titles and European titles and he will be hoping that Saturday’s fight is another step in the right direction.

Gough says “huge amount” of athletes afraid to come out
The novel pre-season tournament, which is being staged to give local players some football after the 2020/21 season was scrapped, sees eight groups of four or five teams battling it out with the top two teams advancing to the main competition, and third and fourth moving on to the secondary competition. It is sort of a Champions League/Europa League set-up and the format is proving popular with the players who have been looking forward to getting back on the pitch for months. Last year’s league and cup runners-up Killarney Athletic lead the way in Group A following victories over Mastergeeha and Tralee Dynamos B. They face Lisard Wanderers B in Woodlawn on Sunday morning in their final group game before
advancing to the last 16. Geeha are in second and will join their neighbours in the ‘A’ competition if they can defeat Dynamos B in their final fixture. Castleisland are first in Group B with Listowel B and Ballymac Celtic in contention for second; Listowel A are two from two in Group C with Asdee Rovers in second; Fenit have won their opening three games in five-team Group D with Tralee Dynamos, Classic B and Strand Road in the hunt for the runners-up spot; Classic A are in pole position in Group E; Killorglin and Mainebank are joint first in Group F; Castlegregory and Camp are joint top of Group G; and MEK Galaxy share top spot in Group H with Killarney Athletic B. (These placings are likely to have shifted due to some matches being held on Thursday, after our print deadline.) Defending Premier A champions Killarney Celtic opted out of the tournament. Instead, they are playing a series of warm-up games with their most recent fixture taking place last Wednesday night against Munster Senior League side Avondale United.

Gough is one of the few men involved in Irish sports who is openly gay and speaking to Matt Cooper on Virgin Media Tonight, he suggested that we need to ask why that is. "There are a huge amount of people, not only in the GAA, but in elite sport in Ireland that are afraid to come out," Gough said. "You only have to look at 64 inter-county teams, League of Ireland, we've an awful lot of international players playing in the Premiership, we've four provincial rugby teams, hockey, equestrianism, boxing, we could name a number of sports here. "And there are no elite gay male athletes coming out in those sports. The question needs to be asked, ‘why’? Why are they struggling? What are the issues? What are the barriers and hurdles that are stopping them coming out?" The highly ranked official added that his own personal experience since coming out has been extremely positive. "I have received nothing but huge support from my own colleagues on the refereeing panel. I found the media nothing more than positive, certainly here in this country. "My life has been positively enhanced

since I came out, so I can't see any major barriers or hurdles - just perceived barriers - and that's what I feel the issue might be.” Speaking separately to Eavan Murphy of the Independent, Gough revealed that he has “a list the length of my arm of people who contacted me over the years whose brother, son or partner died by suicide because they weren’t able to come out to their GAA teammates.” Gough was speaking at the launch of the ‘Bring It On’ GAA campaign, which is aiming to increase participation by those from diverse backgrounds in Gaelic games by 30% by 2025.

Kilcummin KILCUMMIN LOOKING GOOD: Bog Walks. Walk Brochures are available at the Rural Development Office and the Post Office and online on our Facebook page. Following recent feedback from walkers, we would very much appreciate if the following was observed by all users of the walk: (1) Bring your rubbish home with you and help keep this environment clean. (2) Keep your dog(s) on a lead when you come in contact with fellow walkers or wildlife. As this is the breeding season for our wildlife, dogs off the lead and left roam on the bog can do immense harm to nesting birds, hares etc. (3) Respect the local landowners’ property. This is a beautiful amenity in our parish, and we should all strive to make it a clean, safe and friendly place to enjoy.
