Local businesses donate €17k to Ukrainian appeal

| By Michelle Crean Several business people from Killarney - so moved by the horrific invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops under Putin's command - dug deep to help pay for trucks to deliver 200 pallets collected locally. Independent Irish Health Foods owner Henry Bartlett donated a massive €10,000, while Paul Fitzgerald from Paul Fitzgerald & Son Building Supplies Ltd, Mike from Cronin's Quarries, Fleury Engineering, Boyles Patio Centre, as well as Offaly based business Condron Group Tullamore gave a combined €7k to O'Neills Transport. And what's more is Colm O'Neill from O'Neills Transport also paid for a truck to bring some of the goods so kindly donated by Killarney people all the way to Poland. Now all trucks have arrived safely to their destinations, and donations are now being sorted and distributed among those in need. "All the goods sent from Killarney went directly to Ukraine," one of the organisers of the donations, Konrad Paprocki, told

the Killarney Advertiser. "Paul Fitzgerald from Paul Fitzgerald & Son Building Supplies Ltd. and Donal O'Brien from Olympic Haulage offered us numerous warehouses and storage that we could use as long as we needed, and all equipment they had available. Paul, Donal and their super team built 200 pallets and loaded them on all trucks, while butcher Tim Jones organised the transport." What was initially a small project by Iza Dian, Diana Sobas Gorka and Konrad, quickly gathered a life of its own. "Once we knew how big the project was getting Tim Jones contacted Paul Fitzgerald and Donal O’Brien and they

just jumped at the opportunity to help out and to do their part to ensure that this would be a successful project. By the time we boxed pallets and wrapped the goods we didn’t realise we had another problem with around 200 pallets of goods that needed to be transported to Poland. "So Tim rang Henry Bartlett from Independent Irish Health Foods and was amazed at the response he got from him. The first thing Henry and his business partner Richard Wilkins said was "what can we do to make this work" so Tim explained that we needed money to transport the goods to Poland and the instant reply from the lads was "we would like to donate €10,000 to make this work for

Deerpark Retail Park up for sale | By Michelle Crean Killarney's popular Deerpark Retail Park has been put up for sale as part of a collection of three Irish retail parks - with a guide price excess of €67.5 million. Tenants will not be affected as property advisors CBRE offer The Cobalt Collection - which includes Letterkenny Retail Park, Co. Donegal and Tullamore Retail Park in Co Offaly, for sale by Private Treaty. The entire collection is producing a stable rent roll of €6,475,000 per annum. The tenant mix is diversified, not reliant on any one retail use and has an impressive combination of national and international brands including anchor tenants, Woodies DIY, TK Maxx, Homebase and M&S. asset class out preforming all other retail sub-sectors over the course of the pandemic. This is due to their deemed “essential use” class which were not subject to Government closures coupled with open air surface car parking and large open space configuration. The Irish retail park sub-sector is increasingly sought after by investors, as it is considered stable and a good prospect in the low current

interest environment and in comparison, to the lower returns prevailing in other sectors, according to CBRE.

Ukrainians have this week been settling into the 72-bed Innisfallen Hotel in Fossa, and the 3Lakes Hostel in Killarney town but Konrad said they will continue their work. "We are ready to help," Konrad added. "We still have some goods we held back and we want to deliver it to the Ukrainians living in Killarney. If someone needs something they can contact me directly on 087 265 0106." Also see Facebook 'Kerry for Ukraine'. It's anchored by Marks & Spencer and EZ Living and provides a mix of bulky and open use occupiers to an extensive catchment area. Additional tenants include New Look, Argos, Boots and Costa Coffee. Its total net operating income is approx. €1.30m per annum. “We anticipate strong interest for The Cobalt Collection," Selling Agent, Paddy Farrelly, Capital Markets Division, CBRE said. "From an occupational perspective, retail parks have proven themselves extremely resilient through retail market challenges and having just come through one of the most significant challenges in the sector, it is hard to ignore the opportunity and return profile on offer in the sub-sector. The Cobalt Collection is a notable example of this resilience at an individual asset level. It offers an incoming investor scale, diversified income and stability in the sector as a portfolio. Each scheme's individual performance is exceptional, serving as prominent retail hubs within their catchment areas.”

All pupils and staff from Gaelscoil Faithleann Killarney gathered in the school hall where a beautiful cake was cut by youngest pupil Aurelia Ní Shúilleabháin and oldest Sophia Sharma. All the kids came together in the hall for the first time in two years. During the week the kids were treated to quizzes, art competitions and storytime as Gaeilge as the celebration coincided with Seachtain na Gaeilge. "We were supposed to have the school's

birthday two years ago on March 12," Deputy Principal Lisa Ní Iarlaithe told the Killarney Advertiser. "We decided to celebrate on the 32 birthday and we incorporated Seachtain na Gaeilge into it too. We had a table quiz for the older kids and the younger kids. "We had an art competition on seanfhocal from Second to Sixth Class and the prizes were Easons vouchers and Easter eggs." The Junior Senior Infants and First classes were read a "Scéal as Gaeilge" and they had to draw their favourite part of the story with winners presented with prizes and their art hung on the school walls. "Every child got a bun and dance teacher Triona Mangan did a Céilí with Junior Infants up to the second classes separately."

Greywind to headline hometown show | By Michelle Crean

CHALLENGE: Damien O'Sullivan from Knockmanagh, Killarney is undertaking an epic cycling challenge with friends. Pictured are: Tyrone Moran, Damien O’Sullivan, Eduardo Moffit, Jack Dinneen and Greg O’Shea.

Damien begins mammoth cycle for men's health charity

Killarney native Damien O’Sullivan and his friends are currently cycling the entire length of the country - completing a whopping total distance of 642.81km and a total elevation gain of 4,707m! | By Michelle Crean From yesterday (Thursday) to this Sunday Damien from Knockmanagh and team mates, ex Connacht player Jack Dinneen, ex Irish 7’s player and Love Island winner Greg O’Shea, and Eduardo Moffitt, are cycling from Malin Head to Mizen Head. Day one included cycling from Malin Head to Bundoran, Bundoran to Oranmore on day two, Oranmore to Killarney on day three, and finally finish Killarney to Mizen Head on Sunday leaving from the Dromhall Hotel that morning at 9am. This cycling challenge is one of a number of fundraising activities that the group have arranged over the last few months including twice completing 'The Four Peaks Challenge’ where one summits the highest peak in each province in as quick a time as possible, and a 480km cycle across the month of November, in addition to taking part in the ‘Grow a Mo’ Movember campaign. All these efforts, and with more to come, are culminating in the ultimate challenge of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in June of this year. The group are taking on these challenges to help raise funds and awareness for the Movember charity, the world’s leading men’s health organisation and support causes covering testicular cancer, prostate cancer and men’s mental health and suicide prevention. With a fundraising target of €30,000,

the team would appreciate any support that can be provided via GoFundMe 'Kilimanjaro '22'. Damien went to primary school in Tiernaboul followed by The Sem and played football for Killarney Legion as an adult and soccer with Killarney Athletic. “As is the case for most people, we have been affected by mental health and suicide, in addition to a growing number of men living through testicular cancer, and prostate cancer in our families and friend’s groups,” Damien told the Killarney Advertiser. “Far too often men don’t know what to do or fail to act in each of these areas. Over the past few years I have taken part in Movember to help raise awareness for all aspects of men’s health and help fund the brilliant work the Movember charity do. Last July both Jack Dinneen and I were approached by Movember to ask if we would be interested in stepping up our efforts to support the charity, which we jumped at. "We will be undertaking the cycle from Malin to Mizen Head to again raise awareness and support for the Movember charity. To say we are excited would be an understatement as is it a bucket list event for us all. "We have been and continue to work hard at this, so if you would like to keep up to date with our journey, you can find us on Instagram and Facebook: Kilimanjaro_22.”

It'll be a show they won't forget as local rock band Greywind - who have been making a name for themselves across the water - will headline a local show for the very first time. Tomorrow night (Saturday), guitarist/ songwriter Paul O'Sullivan and his sister, singer Steph, are super excited to finally get on the stage in the INEC as the main act and perform songs which they originally wrote at home in Ballydribbeen. "We're so excited to finally be headlining in our hometown for the first time," Paul said. "We wrote all these songs at our home in Killarney and we've been lucky enough to have been able to play them at some of the biggest festivals in the world so it's going to be such a special night to finally play them where we started." Greywind played at some of the biggest festivals in the world, including Reading and Leeds Festival, Isle of Wight Festival, Download Festival, Rock Am Ring and have supported the likes of The Coronas in a sold out INEC Arena so it's going to be

a special night to finally have them headlining in their hometown for the first time. The band's debut album ‘Afterthoughts’ was recorded in Texas with Grammy-Winning producer Jason Perry and charted in the Official UK Rock Chart. Greywind have been heavily praised by the likes of BBC Radio 1, Zane Lowe and MTV and in 2021 released their acclaimed newest single ‘Am I Asleep?’ with the track being described as “a stadium-ready alt-rock anthem” by Record Of The Day. Singer-songwriter Donal Lucey will support the siblings at the show. Tickets are €20 and are available now from ticketmaster.ie.

Mission Road crossing finally gets the go ahead | By Sean Moriarty After months, if not years of campaigning, it looks like there will finally be a pedestrian crossing installed between the Beech Road car park and the entrance to Killarney House on Mission Road. Cllr Brendan Cronin has repeatedly called for the crossing to be built. He has raised concerns, especially during the busy summer months, that pedestrians are at risk while trying to cross the busy road to and from the town centre car park which is the nearest public parking facility to Killarney House. “As we approach another busy season for locals and tourists with no progress on the repeated requests for a pedestrian crossing from Beech Road car parks to Killarney House, in the event of an accident, causing serious injury or worse, where does the responsibility/liability lie?” he asked the recent Killarney Municipal meeting.

Kerry County Council said that progress to the design stage of the crossing will commence shortly. “Kerry County Council has re-engaged with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), who have indicated that they will give favourable consideration to a pedestrian crossing at this location subject to approval of the design layout by the TII. Work on this design will commence shortly. Responsibility in the event of an accident depends on the facts and circumstances of each particular accident,” a Council official said. Cronin welcomed the move. "I have repeatedly outlined that this extremely busy location is highly dangerous for pedestrians. The construction of a pedestrian crossing on Mission Road is an absolute necessity for the safety of the general public crossing an extremely busy and dangerous road. It is imperative that this crossing is now progressed to construction as a matter of urgency,” he added.

Tributes to chairman who is stepping down Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has paid tribute to the enormous contribution of local businessman Paul Sherry who has stepped down as voluntary chairman of the St Patrick’s Festival in Killarney.

Locals are teaming up to support Charlie

A group who only know too well the devastating diagnosis Motor Neurone can bring are pulling together to support veteran RTÉ journalist and broadcaster Charlie Bird. | By Michelle Crean Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone are organising a walk in Killarney National Park on Saturday April 2, in conjunction with the Charlie Bird Climb of Croagh Patrick on the same day. Charlie, who was the voice of Irish television reporting for over four decades, made public his recent diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease last October. "It was a devastating diagnosis for Charlie but soon afterwards he decided to do something for the plight of people living with the terrible disease," Christy Lehane, Chairperson of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone, said. "He decided to climb Croagh Patrick mountain on April 2, to raise funds and awareness for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and another charity close to Charlie’s heart namely Pieta House. Charlie acknowledges that the climb will be an immense challenge, but he is determined to do it. Since then, over 100 climbs and walks are planned to take place throughout the country and many of these are here in Kerry. I am aware that many people are climbing mountains, walking in the woods to highlight the vast mountains so many Motor Neurone patients must climb in their everyday lives due to this severe illness physical and mental and Charlie Bird, while climbing the holy mountain, is also climbing his

personal mountain with the terrible disease called Motor Neurone." Registration is at the Headquarters of Kerry Parents and Friends Association at the Old Monastery, Port Road from 10.30am before the walk commences at 11am. The walk is not challenging and is suitable for all walkers and everybody is welcome. All funds raised will be divided equally between the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House to ensure they can continue to do their vital work in every community across Ireland. The IMNDA is the only organisation of its kind in the country dedicated to working on behalf of people living with MND, their families and carers. Their key services include home visits by its four MND nurses, financial assistance towards home help and the supply of specialised equipment on loan. The IMNDA also funds and promotes research into the causes and treatment of MND. Pieta House first opened its doors in Lucan County Dublin in 2006. Since then, they have helped over 60,000 people in suicidal distress or engaging in self harm. They operate 20 locations across the country, and they now employ over 200 therapists and support staff, and the demand for their services is increasing. People can also donate to climbwithcharlie.ie.

Mr Sherry said he has thoroughly enjoyed his time at the helm but, due to several other commitments, he has to hand over the baton to somebody else to plan for the future and elevate the event to a new level. Chamber President Niall Kelleher said the outgoing chairman has done a tremendous job over the past five years and his work ethic has been extraordinary. “It is regularly said that if you want something done well then you should give it to a busy person and that was certainly the case with Paul,” Mr Kelleher said. “In addition to his position as manager of Killarney Outlet Centre, he is hugely active in Killarney Celtic FC, Killarney Rotary Club and so many other local organisations yet he always found time to do the job for us and to do it very well. “Paul put his heart and soul into the organisation of the St Patrick’s Festival in Killarney, leading by example all the time and the town and its people owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for ensuring we have had such a wonderful spectacle to enjoy every March.” Paul said the St Patrick’s Day parade in Killarney has always been a success because, in some shape or form, community activists freely give of their time and effort to their club, their organisation

and their community. “The St Patrick’s Festival is a celebration of our place, our history and our heritage and I want to thank everybody for being part of it over the years,” he said. “The spirit of community and volunteerism is alive and well in our town and that is clearly evident by the magnificent display we saw on our streets on St Patrick’s Day. Without this overall community effort, there would be no parade,” he added. Paul Sherry has spent the past five years as voluntary chairperson of the St Patrick’s Festival – even though it was suspended during the pandemic – and, prior to that, he was assistant chairperson during Anne Marie Kennelly’s three-year term in charge. “I feel that, in order for the festival to grow and progress, it now needs fresh input from somebody with experience in international marketing to promote Killarney further,” he said. “Much as I have enjoyed working on the festival, between the demands of family, work and other commitments, I will no longer be able to allocate the time necessary to do justice to what is required to run this event,” Mr Sherry added. ”I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone within the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland who have helped and supported me with the festival and I have no doubt that, with fresh leadership and commitment, St Patrick’s Festival Killarney will go from strength to strength."

STEPPING DOWN: Paul Sherry has stepped down as voluntary chairman of the St Patrick’s Festival in Killarney.

It was voted by the Financial Times as the best Non Governmental Organisation in the world for its efficiency in operation. All members are volunteers at local level and the membership fees they pay cover for all costs to run the organisation internationally, nationally and locally meaning that all funds raised go directly to those in need. Killarney Lions Club have 30 members and actively seek others to join. It recently celebrated 50 years in Killarney but due to COVID, celebrations were curtailed.

Students rally to help those in need Students and staff shocked with the events unfolding in Ukraine have collected and sorted goods to donate to those displaced as a result.

HELPING: Eimear Finn (left) and Edel Horgan and Claire McCarthy (pictured right) helping with the school collection for Ukraine recently.

The group of Transition Years and their teachers from St Brigid's Presentation Killarney felt huge compassion to help and wanted to support the ‘Collection for Ukraine’. "This has been a Transition Year lead action all week, from students creating posters and announcements to make the school community aware donations were being accepted," teacher Ms Quilter said. Once received the students set about sorting, separating, packing the donations and then loading them into the col-

lection van. "Watching and listening to the news can make us all feel helpless but it’s important to remember we can all play a part through small individual actions which collectively has the power to make a big difference. Thank you to all students, staff and management for their support, the response has been incredibly generous." Special mention to students Abbie C O’Sullivan, Keira Geaney, Alice Boyle O’Sullivan, Abbie Leslie, Grace Smith, Shannon McCarthy and Maeve O’Connor for taking on extra responsibilities, and staff members Ms Gilligan, Ms R O’ Sullivan, Ms Payne and Mr Fleming also, she added.

FENIT FRUIT & VEG Now delivering in Killarney six days a week A leading, national award-winning Kerry food business has now expanded within the retail sector. Fenit Fruit & Veg, owned by Willie and Helen Parker, is a family run business based in Fenit, near Tralee. Established in 2003, it has since become a leading supplier of farm grown produce, prepared vegetables, salads and fruit to the food service, hospitality and retail sectors – delivering throughout Kerry, Cork and Limerick regions. “The Parker family have been farming for generations and it all began in Fenit Island, where my great-grandfather Robert Parker began selling produce throughout Fenit and Tralee,” Willie Parker explained. “My late father, Sean Parker, took over the running of the farm in 1955 and grew his business by purchasing a second farm in 1965 on mainland Fenit. In 2002 I expanded my farm and established the fruit and vegetable business in which I diversified part of the farm to sell potatoes and vegetables. Over the next five years I expanded further and diversified the business to create Fenit Fruit & Veg and it has become one of the leading providers of prepared and non-prepared fruit and vegetables in the food service, hospitality and retail sectors.” In 2019 the business was awarded the status of ‘Highly Commended’ for Achievement, Innovation and Excellence in the SFA National Small Business Awards. On the food service/hospitality side of the business, their customer list is both wide ranging and diverse - suppling hotels, restaurants, gastro pubs, hospitals, nursing homes, wholesalers and catering

companies. Sourcing of their produce is from local growers where possible and they partner with farmers throughout Ireland to source produce that is not available locally. They have a vast collection of products listed on their website: • Prepared Fruit & Veg • Prepared Potato & Chips • Fresh Vegetables • Fresh Fruit & Berries • Mushroom • Salad Leaves & Herbs • Cresses, Flowers, Leaves & Micro Herbs • Fruit Juices Not only that, they also have a comprehensive Prepped Product Brochure available on their website.

PARKER’S FRESH PRODUCE - RETAIL

In February, they launched a selection of retail sector products under the new branding of ‘Parker’s Fresh Produce’ – Peeled Potatoes, Home Cut Chips and Chunky Veg Mix which are prepped and ready to cook. “Over the last two years during the COVID pandemic, we saw a significant increase in the demand for our pre-prepared products within the retail sector,” he said. “We know what our customers want – products which are of high quality, fresh, pre-prepared for convenience, competitively priced - saving them time and money. People want to eat good food, but their busy schedules don’t always allow them the time to prepare healthy produce. We decided then to specifically brand some of our most popular retail

products.” Willie added that one of the main areas they have concentrated on is the packaging of the products. “This does not only include the packaging – but also the basic logo design which is that of a potato, representing the Parker family roots. This is a really exciting time for our business and we are extremely proud to be able to put our family name ‘Parker’ on them. Over the coming months we will be adding new products to the Parker’s Fresh Produce range so keep your eyes peeled!” Parker’s Fresh Produce is now on sale in local shops and a full list of current stockists is available on their website.

PRIDE AND PASSION

“Our dedication to providing exceptional customer service is part of our company ethos and reflected in our reputation.

Whilst freshness, taste and variety are key drivers in the success of our produce sales, consistent high quality, convenience and value for money are also of significant importance in meeting our customer requirements. We are always seeking ways to expand both the business and our product range. We continuously invest in our business in order to develop our facilities in Fenit.” The company would be delighted to speak with any new potential customers who are interested in having their products in any of the food service, hospitality and retail sectors. “On a final note, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their loyalty and support throughout the years and we look forward to continuing to serve our customers in the Killarney region with pride and passion.”

New thrifting trend fights fast fashion Thrifting is the surprising new trend of today - with vintage clothing coming back in style as young people want to recreate the iconic looks of the '70s, '80s and '90s. | By Ellen McSweeney and Méabh O'Sullivan Darcy TRANSITION YEAR JOURNALISM The second-hand fashion market has taken young people by storm and is projected to reach €67 billion by 2025, up from €31 billion in 2021 and is growing at a staggering 11 times the rate of the broader retail clothing sector. The biggest benefit of this trend is how it challenges the fast fashion industry. Fast fashion is inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends. These industries produce billions of garments a year and it is estimated that a bin lorry of textiles is wasted every second. The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, just after the oil industry. That is why it has such a significant impact on carbon emissions and an overall damage to the environment - not to mention the

disgraceful conditions the workers in the factories endure as they are severely underpaid and abused. Second-hand fashion gives used clothes a new life rather than being discarded to the rubbish. This eco-friendly aspect to the trend is a huge contributor to the popularity of thrifting in recent years. People are becoming more aware of the problem of fast fashion and its negative impact on the environment and want to take a stand and make a change for a better, more eco-friendly world. One such shop in Killarney is ‘Hazels Nuts About Vintage' on Plunkett Street. “I set up the shop because I was looking for different fashion myself and I couldn’t find any," Hazel O'Malley explained. "I went up to Dublin 10 years ago and

Volunteers needed for this weekend's Wander Wild festival | By Michelle Crean Killarney's newest festival, Wander Wild, takes place this weekend and needs volunteers to help out. From today (Friday) to Sunday inclusive, it's the first post-pandemic festival event on the Wild Atlantic Way, and will include many indoor and outdoor activities At 6pm this evening, a spectacular opening equinox parade through the streets will dramatically celebrate the death of winter and the birth of spring and the flickering flame of a new dawn will illuminate the town. The adventures on offer throughout the

weekend will include mountain hikes, kayak and boat trips on the lakes, a guided National Park cycle, a photography workshop, orienteering, lake walks, rock climbing and abseiling adventures, night nature walks and a short film festival and an exciting trail race. A really novel and fun feature will be sunrise dips in the water at Dundag, yoga sessions at a fabulous wellness hub and great activities for children. An exciting town centre food trail will focus on the authentic tastes of Kerry food and drink and there will be music and fun in lively venues right through the weekend. A number of high-profile guest speakers have been lined up to share their life experiences, including gifted writer and storyteller Michael Harding. "We need stewards to help out on Saturday and Sunday around basecamp which is located in Main Street outside St Mary's Church," Pat Chawke, Volunteer Chairperson, said. "If you could make yourself available, we’d really appreciate it. We are entirely dependent on volunteers. If you can give us a couple of hours over the weekend - please reply to Wanderwildfestival@gmail.com and we’ll contact you to agree a time."

I started to see vintage shops and second-hand shops. There was just so many clothes out there and people are just wearing them a few times and they are just being thrown away even though they are good quality and I wanted to give them a second life. The clothes that you would get in earlier years were much better quality then clothes you would get now. They will last and you can wear them over and over again," she said.

NOT SUSTAINABLE

"I think thrifting has become so popular now because people are interested in the planet and people know that the consumerism that took over in the past few years just isn't sustainable. People want to give clothes a new life. And I suppose people want different stuff, they don’t want to look the same as everyone and they want something new. When you go into a second hand or a vintage shop you

don’t know what you're going to get and there's an element of surprise and there's only one of everything while if you go into a big retail shop you can see everything and you know what's in there. In a vintage shop you might find something you didn’t expect and didn’t even know you wanted.” Hazel said she thinks there is a place for fast fashion because we still need new clothes. "I think the companies that are making the clothes are going to have to improve their workers' rights as it's a huge problem. People must be suffering on the other side because you can't make clothes that cheap and bring them here so quickly. And the pollution of all that is because they only make clothes that will last a short time and if they can make the clothes that will last longer and pay their workers a proper wage. A lot of places wrap things in plastic bags.”

Ancestor Trouble: A Reckoning and a Reconciliation Author: Maud Newton Maud Newton’s ancestors have vexed and fascinated her since she was a girl. Her mother’s father, who came of age in Texas during the Great Depression, was said to have married 13 times and been shot by one of his wives. Her mother’s grandfather killed a man with a hay hook and died in an institution. Mental illness and religious fanaticism percolated through Maud’s maternal lines back to an ancestor accused of being a witch in Puritan-era Massachusetts. Maud’s father, an aerospace engineer turned lawyer, was an educated man who extolled the virtues of slavery and obsessed over the “purity” of his family bloodline, which he traced back to the Revolutionary War. As obsessive in her own way as her parents, Newton researched her genealogy and sought family secrets through her DNA. Searching, moving, and inspiring, 'Ancestor Trouble' is one writer’s attempt

to use genealogy - a once-niche hobby that has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry - to expose the secrets and contradictions of her own ancestors, and to argue for the transformational possibilities that reckoning with our ancestors offers all of us.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Angela Kerrisk Angela is available for advice and fitness consultations, at info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Don't wait for the perfect moment Too often we wait for the perfect time with our health and fitness, however, this all-or-nothing thinking very seldom gets us anywhere. If you are waiting for the perfect time to start eating better, exercise, finally get in shape ... some of these phrases may sound familiar… • My family needs me • There’s too much going on • I’m too old - I’m too tired • When I feel less clumsy in the gym • When I lose 10lbs • Tomorrow - Monday - next week....... You’ve got an excuse for everything and you’ve been holding on to these excuses for years now and they just roll off the tongue. We are always waiting for the perfect time, but why? For some, it helps avoid the real hard work of doing it. For others, avoiding starting can be a protection against any possibility of future embarrassment or failure. We tell ourselves it shouldn’t be this way, everyone else has it easier - but it is the same way for everyone, stop waiting for the right time - time isn't waiting for you. However, there is a perfect moment and that is now, because right now is all you ever have.

START AT THE BEGINNING

If you’re not taking steps forward, you’re actually moving backwards. Starting means taking action, it means committing to a choice of some kind or another. As long as something is moving, that’s a start. One moment will stack on top of another and before you know it, you’ll have arrived at your destination.

TRY THESE TIPS TO HELP YOU START TAKING ACTION

1) Revise your expectations. Recognise that there is no perfect time and there never will be. There is only now. 2) Carve out time. Even if it’s imperfect, give yourself permission to make yourself and your fitness and health goals a priority. 3) Just start. Just do something, anything. Find the smallest possible thing you can do right now and do it. 4) Expect resistance. This doesn’t mean it won’t work. You only have to get through this moment - which will be the hardest, but it won’t last long. 5) Get support. Start building your support systems. Whether it’s a friend or family member, workout buddy, or a coach, find someone that will be there for you to offer you support and accountability. We keep thinking that there’s this perfect time in the future. We think that we’ll be in ideal health, our bank account will be just right etc. The reality is that the future is now. Now is all there is. That’s it. There are no guarantees for the future. The greatest risk of all? The risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later. Making change on your own is hard. If it was easy, you would have done it by now. It can be helpful to have some structure around starting something new. Being held accountable for your actions can also lead to greater results. If you would like some extra support and accountability around your nutrition and fitness why not get in contact with us here at activate.ie.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Small Claims Procedure Q: What is the purpose of the Small Claims Procedure? The aim of the Small Claims Procedure (also known as the Small Claims Court) is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers and businesses to resolve disputes without the need to employ a solicitor. Both the person making the claim (the claimant) and the respondent (the person you are claiming against) must be living or based within the State. If either party lives or is based in another EU member state, the European Small Claims Procedure should be used. The small claims procedure is provided by the local District Court offices. Q: What kind of issues are dealt with through the Small Claims Procedure? The following types of consumer claims can be dealt with under the Small Claims Procedure: • Consumer claims such as for faulty goods or bad workmanship. You must have bought the goods or service for private use from someone selling them in the course of business. Claims can also be made for minor damage to your property. • Claims for the non-return of a rent deposit for certain kinds of rented properties, such as, a holiday home or a flat in a premises where the landlord also lives. • The claim cannot exceed €2,000. Q: Are there some consumer claims not covered by the Small Claims Procedure? Consumer claims cannot be made through the Small Claims Procedure for debts, personal injuries or breach of leasing or hire-purchase agreements. Q: Is there a fee for making a claim? The current fee for making a claim through the Small Claims Procedure is €25. This fee is payable by cheque (made out to the Small Claims Registrar) or postal order. The Small Claims Registrar will accept the fee in cash if you pay it in person. If you apply online, you are required to pay online. If your claim is accepted as suitable for the Small Claims Procedure the fee is not refunded, even if your claim is successful. Q: How do I apply to have a claim dealt with by the Small Claims Procedure? You can access detailed guidance on how to apply to the Small Claims Registrar on the Courts Service website www.courts.ie. You can print an application for the Small Claims Procedure from the website. This application form is also available from your local Citizens Information Centre or from the local District Court offices. Staff in the District Court office can help in completing the application form. It is important

when completing the application form to give all the necessary information. This will help the Small Claims Registrar to process your claim and try and resolve the dispute. If no resolution can be reached, it will also make it easier to enforce a Decree (or court order) if one is granted. You can also make an application for the Small Claims Procedure online. Using Courts Service Online you can create and pay for a small claim application. You can also check the status of your online small claim securely, using a username and password. To create a claim online you need a credit or debit card and an email address to which you have access. Q: Where do I apply? The Small Claims Procedure is provided through local District Court offices. You make your claim to the District Court office in the area either where: • The person you are making a claim against lives or carries on business • Where the contract was made • Where the damage to property took place You will find a list of District Court areas on the Court Service website. Q: What is the European Small Claims Procedure? The European Small Claims Procedure provides an inexpensive and easy way for someone to pursue a cross-border claim without the need to employ a solicitor. Similar to the Small Claims Court it can be used in civil and in commercial matters. The claim cannot exceed €5,000. It is an alternative to other options that may exist under the national laws of EU member states. The fee for the European Small Claims Procedure is €25. You may have to pay for the translation of your documents if they are in a language the defendant does not understand. If you win you can claim for such additional costs. If you lose, however, you may have to pay for any translation or other costs incurred by the defendant. Q: What cases does it apply to? The procedure applies to cross-border cases. In other words, the party with whom you are in dispute must be domiciled or habitually resident in another member state and you are pursuing the action in Ireland. It allows you, for example, to make a claim in Ireland for a faulty product which you bought online from someone living in another EU country. _________________________________________________ If you need further information about any of the issues mentioned above or you have other questions, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information Service in Kerry on 0818 07 7860.

Alzheimer’s Tea Day makes a comeback

Undeveloped film rolls a real music treasure

RTÉ stars Dáithí Ó Sé and Sinead Kennedy are calling on Kerry to host a Tea Day to mark Alzheimer’s Tea Day Comeback on Thursday, May 5. After two long years, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI) is inviting everyone to come together again for a cup of tea, a chat and maybe a treat or two to help raise funds for vital dementia supports and services. The ASI is asking the people of Kerry to get involved with local Tea Day events in their homes, gardens, workplaces, schools, local community centres or somewhere special. The traditional Alzheimer’s Tea Day was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, and the event had to be moved online. For the first time in three years, after so much time in isolation, with many feeling lonely and alone, The ASI wants people to host their very own Tea Day and help Tea Day make a comeback! The ASI aims to raise vital funds to provide supports and services to help families living with dementia nationwide. There are an estimated 2,429 people living with dementia in Kerry and each year more than 11,000 people develop the disease across the country – that’s at least 30 people every day. However, there is one thing you can do to help – you can put the kettle on and host your

HOW TO HELP

Register on teaday.ie and you'll be sent an Organiser’s Toolkit which includes posters, collection boxes, raffle tickets, and everything you need to make your Tea Day a success! Next, share a cuppaa and a few stories at home, in the garden, at work or in the community. You can host Tea Day however, and wherever, you like! Share your Tea Day event on social media. Post your photos and videos and

don’t forget to use the hashtags #TeaDay2022 #TogetherForTea "It’s been three years since we’ve been able to gather for a proper Tea Day get-together," The Alzheimer Society of Ireland Ambassador, Dáithí Ó Sé, said. "We want everyone to have a chat, a laugh, a brew and donate a few Euro to The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s Tea Day campaign to help provide essential dementia-specific services for the 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland."

Since the late 1960s, Boston's Charles Daniels has been photographing famous rockers such as Rod Stewart, Jimi Hendrix, The Who’s Pete Townshend, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, Chicago, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Joe Cocker, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and more. However, although he loved taking photos he never quite got around to developing them all. Now he's hoping to bring the pictures to life in what will be one of the biggest and most historic collection of images from the music era that has never been seen. Many of his film rolls were kept in Ziploc bags or in his fridge in his house in Somerville. Film Rescue International, a company that first started developing expired films in 1983, is also helping and a GoFundMe '3,000 rolls of film & a lifetime of stories' has raised over $45,000 so far.

Twitter must block Putin’s propaganda - MEP Kelly Ireland South MEP, Sean Kelly, is calling for a major social media platform to "immediately suspend" the Russian UK Embassy’s online account.

Ireland South MEP, Sean Kelly.

“I am calling on Twitter to immediately suspend the Russian UK Embassy’s Twitter account, and any other accounts linked to the Russian Federation and used as disinformation platforms for war criminal Putin,” Seán Kelly MEP said this week in lambasting recent tweets by the embassy. “Putin is directing the intentional slaughter of innocent civilians, from young

children to the very elderly, on a daily basis. The Russian Embassy in the UK, in particular, has been denying these war crimes, despite substantiated reports of these most heinous atrocities, and continues to spread lies and Putin’s propaganda. How long will Twitter facilitate the perpetrator’s propaganda being spouted by accounts hosted on its platform? “I am urging the EU to urgently re-evaluate its recent ban on Russian propaganda in light of the Russian Federation’s use of social media to publish false information." He says he supports the ban on Russian

propaganda channels such as Sputnik and RT channels, but that the same rules need to apply to social media where a great deal of people get their news and information from. MEP Kelly pointed to recent tweets by the Russian embassy in the UK, which attempt to falsely lay blame on the Ukrainian side and hit out at our free and independent media for so-called “Russiaphobia”. “Russia’s attack on Ukraine is an illegal, unprovoked and vicious attack on a sovereign country - it is important that the truth is heard loud and clear,” Kelly underlined.

Gala concert to mark 50 years of RnaG RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta will celebrate 50 years on air on April 2.

Concern’s humanitarian response within Ukraine Concern Worldwide has launched a humanitarian operation within Ukraine to help those fleeing the conflict. Having completed assessments in the border countries of Poland, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania, Concern’s emergency response team will focus their activities inside Ukraine where they believe the humanitarian needs are greatest. The UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, warned last week that in addition to the 3.5 million who have fled Ukraine, a further 6.5 million Ukrainians have been forced by the conflict to leave their homes, but they remain within the country. The number of displaced people is continuing to grow every day. “A quarter of Ukraine’s population is on the move – the equivalent of twice the number of people on the island of Ireland,” Concern’s Head of Emergency Operations Ros O’Sullivan said. “The sheer scale is unprecedented. We will work to support those in transit and those who can no longer keep moving.” Concern’s emergency response team is working closely with its partners in the Alliance2015 group of European Non Government Organisations (NGOs), two of which, Czech NGO People in Need and French NGO ACTED, have been working in Ukraine since 2014 and have well-es-

tablished relationships with local authorities and local NGOs. They are supporting people within Ukraine within their homes and those who have been forced to flee the conflict. The response includes cash payments targeting 10,000 people. The initial focus will be on displaced people living with host families or in rented accommodation in the Lvivska region, but this programme will expand to other regions in western Ukraine; procurement and delivery of family household kits including blankets, bed linen and cutlery, hygiene kits including soap, bleach, toilet paper and plastic buckets, and baby kits including nappies and baby wipes, support to hosting facilities and collective centres in Western Ukraine for displaced people, with items such as mattresses and blankets, support with equipment such as washing machines and stoves; assistance with utility payments; upgrades to sanitation or heating systems; and establishing child-friendly spaces. “The humanitarian need here is huge and growing daily, as more and more people arrive,” Mr O’Sullivan noted. “But Concern and its partners are very well placed on the ground to respond. This response is made possible by of the generosity of the Irish people. We urge you to support our Ukraine Crisis appeal today online at www.concern.net or by calling our emergency hotline 0818 410510.”

Applications open for Platform 31 A nationwide artist development scheme by the 31 Local Authority Arts Offices, in collaboration with the Arts Council, is seeking applicants. One artist in each of the 31 Local Authorities around Ireland will be supported. Participating artists will receive an €8,000 bursary to invest in themselves and their practice. “I am delighted to see Platform 31 return for 2022," Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer,

Kerry County Council, said. "It is an initiative that aligns with our Arts Strategy as it supports the artist to value their time, showcase their work and collaborations, and share their learnings locally and nationally. I would encourage artists of all disciplines in Kerry to find out more about this opportunity for funding, networks and development.” Applications are open until March 30. For more information see platform31.localartsireland.ie.

And to mark this very special occasion the RTÉ Concert Orchestra will travel to Connemara to perform in a gala concert in the heart of the Gaeltacht, broadcast live on radio, with some of the country’s top traditional musicians including Altan, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Steve Cooney, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Cór Chúil Aodha and many more. Courage, identity and pride of place are the primary themes for the commemorative concert, titled 'RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta 50', reflecting the station’s origins within the civil rights movement, its history as a regional and national radio service, and its vital role in sustaining and promoting the Irish language and culture over the last 50 years, with artists from all across the Gaeltachtaí taking part. RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta (RnaG) came

on air for the first time on April 2, 1972 - Easter Sunday. The result of a long campaign by the Gaeltacht Civil Rights Movement, who asserted the right of the Gaeltacht and greater Irish-language community to a daily radio service in their own language, the station has acted as a vital bridge between the Gaeltacht communities. Since then, RnaG has played a vital role as a platform for the Irish-language and all aspects of the culture, including traditional music, sean-nós singing, Gaelic games, literature, oral arts, and contemporary Irish-language songwriting, as well as providing a daily regional, national and international news service in Irish. "Born out of the language movement of the late '60s and early '70s, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta sought to give voice and preserve voice, to develop it and champion it," Dee Forbes, Director-General, RTÉ, said. "RnaG has done just that, and more, across five remarkable decades.”

Man trapped for two days in storm pipe A man trapped 15 feet underground for two days in a 16-inch diameter storm pipe - the size of a large pizza - has been rescued. 50 firefighters, police officers and rescue personnel came to the man's aid in San Francisco on Sunday. “When we finally got him out of the ground, he was beyond exuberant," Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesperson Steve Hill, said. "He was beyond happy to be above ground." Although not injured, the man aged in his 30s, who entered the storm pipe intentionally, was suffering from dehy-

dration and was sent to the local hospital for a check up. “He couldn’t get through and he couldn’t go back,” Steve said. “Somehow, people passing by on a walking path some distance away from the storm water system managed to hear his cries for help. That’s fairly miraculous because it was pretty windy out there,” Hill said. Four firefighters with their own air supply, had to clear tree branches, rubbish and other debris to get access to the man. Some entered the underground space from one side while other rescuers dug a second access from the opposite side.

63-year-old Bentley leads Killarney Parade

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Marie Moloney, travelled through the town in style during the St Patrick’s Day Parade on Thursday last. Glenbeigh-based classic car restoration and hire specialists Pristine Classics, operated by Florian Seidler, provided a 1958 Bentley S1 for the occasion. His company specialises in the sales and restoration of classic cars. He also provides high-end cars to wedding parties and has recently started a new branch of the business where car fans can hire a classic car for a day or a week and take it on traditional driving routes in Kerry. Another arm of the business is syndication

of classic cars allowing for shared ownership of an otherwise out of reach motor. Last Thursday’s parade was the first time he was invited to participate in the Killarney St Patrick’s Day festivities. “It was a very good thing to be part of,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a lovely looking car and everybody was delighted to see it.” Members of Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club also took part in the parade. They were the only car enthusiasts in the event. Local Paralympian Jordan Lee, as part of his brand ambassador role with Kelliher’s Garage and Toyota Ireland, also took part in his Toyota RAV4.

Endurance was first ship in history to be insured The Endurance, the lost vessel of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton and Annascaul native Tom Crean, was found at the bottom of the Weddell Sea on March 5 last. The ship was crushed by Antarctic seaice in January 1915 and sank on November 21 1915, forcing Shackleton and his crew to make their escape on foot and in small boats. The rescue mission took four attempts with the remainder of the 28 crew rescued from Elephant Island on August 30 1916. It had been 24 months and 22 days since they set sail from England. It's considered to be one of the great survival stories of human history. Paul Miller of The Insurance Museum in London confirmed that the Endurance was insured at Lloyds of London

in 1914. News that the Endurance was missing first came via Lloyds “apart from the natural anxiety as to the fate of Ernest Shackleton, underwriters are now somewhat concerned about the safety of the expedition ship Endurance which has not been heard of since she left South Georgia in December 1914 to carry the transatlantic party to their starting point”. Lloyd’s and the Indemnity Marine Assurance Company had underwritten its hull, machinery and equipment for £15,000. This was the first vessel to take part in Antarctic exploration to be covered

against all risks throughout her voyage. It had appeared to be a good risk as there had been no record of recent disaster to an Antarctic ship. Over the previous 20 years, 23 vessels had gone and returned home safely. The Endurance was the first ship in history to be insured into the waters of the Antarctic. The Times reported "Hitherto the insurance of vessels taking part in Antarctic exploration has ceased at the last port touched, and Endurance will be the first vessel to be insured in the ice zone". The scientists aboard the research vessel that located the Endurance said that the wreck was in remarkably good condition with the name Endurance on the stern still clearly legible.

John Healy of Healy Insurances.

The scientists did not salvage any part of the wreck as the ship is now a protected historic site and monument under the Antarctic treaty system, the international regulations that apply to Antarctica.

Large number of landlords exiting property market Alarming new figures have highlighted the growing number of landlords who have exited the market in recent times. More landlords than ever are putting their properties up for sale, evicting tenants and driving a rise in family homelessness, new figures suggest. There was a sharp increase throughout last year in the number of 'Notice to Quit' issued to tenants, according to the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB), rising from 352 in the first quarter of the year to 958 in the final quarter. Over half of all such notices were given because the landlord decided to sell the property. Over 600 landlords told tenants to move out because they were putting the property up for sale in the last three months of last year. Many tenants have difficulty securing

new places to live, with some requiring emergency accommodation. Other reasons given – accounting for almost a quarter of all the 'Notice to Quit' – included that the landlord or a family member intended to use the property themselves. A “breach of tenant obligations” accounted for just 14 percent of the 'Notice to Quit'. The figures from the RTB suggest 80 landlords a week exited the market in the last three months of 2021. These are alarming figures indeed which show a large number of landlords looking to exit the market. The property market crash of the late 2000’s saw Ireland create a large number of ‘accidental landlords’. Improved market conditions in recent times have seen people climb up out of negative equity enabling them to exit the market. The majority of these properties are be-

ing purchased for family homes which in itself is a good thing, but the flip side is a declining number of residential rental properties in the market. At the time of writing there are only five properties listed as available to rent in Killarney; four of which are two bedroom apartments.

SO WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

Incentivise landlords with tax breaks on rental income? Rental income is currently classed as general income incurring full income tax liability. Throw in stricter rent controls and compliance costs and is it little wonder people are exiting the market? ‘Good’ landlords who may not have increased their rent or perhaps reduced their rent over the pandemic period are now, in practice, being penalised with rent controls allowing for nominal increases. They are not allowed to now

charge market rent for the property! While the theory of these rent controls makes sense and is certainly required, should a practical common sense approach also be taken in specific cases? Should Local Authorities be allowed to buy any properties with HAP (Housing Assistance Payment) or RAS (Rental Accommodation Scheme) tenants in place, effectively becoming the landlord? One thing is for sure, a plan needs to be put in place to slow down the disorderly exit of accidental and semi-professional landlords from the market or the already squeezed rental market faces further difficulties.

Loosen your muscles with toning tables If you're feeling unmotivated and sluggish and don't know where to start to get your fitness back on track, then toning tables may be the ideal solution to get a stretch back into your body. If you're suffering from high blood pressure or high cholesterol, then look no further. Our Pilates based toning tables are suitable for both male and female of all ages and help to reduce these two conditions. If you are having difficulty touching your toes, or tying your shoelaces, then you have to start somewhere and there's no point in putting it off. Rest assured, the toning tables will help loosen your muscles and help stretch you out safely and effectively. It's worth trying them out as they are like any style of exercise, as well as suitable to each individual's needs. We have many different types of clients including rehabilitation from hip operations or knee replacements. One

client came in on a crutch and went out without it. She reported that she felt so good leaving that she forgot all about it. Also she told me her doctors said she was having an excellent and very quick recovery and added that it was down to doing the toning tables regularly three times a week. The tables are fantastic at working on the pelvic floor muscles also. You must still do the work - but the tables will guide you in the right direction. Any bladder issues or pelvic floor muscle issues don't just go away so it's important to work on them or you will be heading for surgery. It's so important to heal the muscles after weight loss or pregnancy also, and this can be done even if your child is 10-years-old for example. Basically, at any age it's never too late and it will change the quality of your life dramatically. • For more information or to book an appointment call Jill on 064 6632966.

NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. THERESE O little St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, who during your short life on earth became a mirror of angelic purity, of love strong as death, and of wholehearted abandonment to God, now that you rejoice in the reward of your virtues, cast a glance of pity on me as I leave all things in your hands. Make my troubles your own- speak a word for me to our Lady Immaculate, whose flower of special love you were to that Queen of heaven “who smiled on you at the dawn of life”. Beg her as the Queen of the heart of Jesus to obtain for me by her powerful intercession, the grace I yearn for so ardently at this Novena, and that she join with it a blessing that may strengthen me during life. Defend me at the hour of death, and lead me straight on to happy eternity. Amen. C.D.

There will come a time you’ll hold my hand Stroke my face and kiss my lips And then you’ll understand Although I never breathed your air Or gazed into your eyes That doesn’t mean I never was. An Angel Never Dies. Loved and missed always Dad, Mum, sisters and brothers.

Tyrone return to Killarney for latest instalment of Ireland’s favourite north-south rivalry It’s not quite time for revenge. Kerry supporters will be hoping for another, more serious opportunity for that a little later in the year. But the All-Ireland champions are in town this weekend and any such visit must be taken seriously - even if the hosts will have very little to play for. Jack O’Connor’s side have powered through the league, winning five and drawing one of their six matches to date. With a spot in the final already secured, and that final coming up just seven days later, O’Connor might decide to rest some key players on Sunday. Nevertheless, the sight of that white and red Tyrone jersey is sure to stir the 15 players who do get the nod. As far as Tyrone are concerned, their Division 1 fate is up in the air. If other results go their way, victory in Killarney could set up another rematch in Croke Park next week. If results go against them, defeat could relegate them to Division 2. That’s how tight things are around the

INJURED PLAYERS

It’s difficult to know how The Kingdom will line out this time around. A number of injured players are rumoured to be close to a return, among them Seán O’Shea, David Moran, Gavin White and Paul Murphy, but the Kerry manager may opt to keep his powder dry. Giving the likes of Joe O’Connor and Darragh Roche a run out might be more beneficial to the team in the long run. Tyrone were on the receiving end of a brutal defeat at the same venue last year but it counted for little when they knocked Kerry out of the championship at the semi-final stage. With that in mind,

the result on Sunday matters little, although Kerry will no doubt be hoping to keep the momentum going. That sketchy draw against Kildare on the opening day is ancient history now that five straight wins have been accumulat-

ed, and the team’s defensive record (five clean sheets out of six) will be particularly pleasing to O’Connor and co. Another solid defensive display will be enough to keep the masses happy. VERDICT: Kerry by one.

Time for O’Connor to pick his No. 1 Ahead of the last round of the league, Adam Moynihan says Kerry manager Jack O’Connor must choose between Shane Ryan and Shane Murphy - and stick with them

SHOT CALLER: Kerry manager Jack O'Connor follows the action during last Sunday's National League match against Armagh. Photo: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile.

A gritty win in Ulster. Another clean sheet. League final place secured. What’s not to like? The mood around Kerry football is justifiably upbeat right now, but let’s not lose the run of ourselves just yet. As the saying goes, all that glitters is not gold. The most obvious cause for concern at the moment is the fact that we are approaching the fourth month of the season and we still don’t have a goalkeeper. So far, Jack O’Connor has alternated between Shane Ryan and Shane Murphy, giving both candidates a fair crack at impressing him. Ryan, the incumbent, has started four of Kerry’s nine games (pre-season and league), including the most recent victory over Armagh. Murphy, meanwhile, has started the other five. If O’Connor knows who his No. 1 is at this point then he’s doing a fine job of hiding it. Murphy, who was dropped by Peter Keane in 2019, has acquitted himself well in the early stages of his comeback year and, for me, his range of kicking just nudges him ahead of his rival. He also seems to spot the runs that little bit quicker, a crucial attribute to have when the opposition squeeze up in high-pressure scenarios. If Kerry want to be the best, they will need a goalkeeper who is capable of being the best (or at least one of the best) in the country. Murphy has already proven himself to be the best as far as Kerry club football is concerned. Can he make that step up to elite intercounty level? We’ll never know unless he gets an extended run in the team.

MIDFIELD CONUNDRUM

Another lingering problem is the midfield pairing. Diarmuid O’Connor is steadily growing in stature and as things stand he is undoubtedly the first choice for No. 8. The question is: who starts at 9? O’Connor’s Na Gaeil clubmate Jack Barry has filled the role in recent weeks with varying degrees of success. Barry has been an intercounty player for five years now and he has around 50 games under his belt - so he has experience - but it’s hard to escape the feeling that Kerry could do with a more impactful starter in this

position. The problem for Jack O’Connor is that up to this point his hands have been tied. David Moran hasn’t kicked a ball all year. Stefan Okunbor sparkled alltoo-briefly in the McGrath Cup before sustaining a nasty shoulder injury on club duty. Joe O’Connor suffered a similar fate while playing for Stacks in the Munster final, although thankfully he has now recovered from his knee injury. The Kerry captain made a five-minute cameo last weekend. Adrian Spillane is another midfield option but he has slotted in really nicely at half forward, providing a badly needed physical presence in tight situations. The manager will be loath to shift the all-action Templenoe man now that he is playing the best football of his Kerry career. The only other option on the panel is newcomer Greg Horan, who will need more game time before he challenges the others for a starting berth. (Seán O’Shea might also be considered an auxiliary midfielder but we have more than likely seen the last of him at 8 or 9. His manager has made a point of insisting that the Kenmare star’s best position is centre forward.) So, it appears as though Joe O’Connor is currently the only viable alternative to Barry, and with that in mind it would be surprising if Jack O’Connor doesn’t give him a spin against Tyrone on Sunday. As I’ve written many times before, the Tralee man offers a type of explosiveness that other nominees for the role cannot match. Perhaps the most damning criticism that can be levelled at Kerry’s midfielders in recent years is that they have been passive. At times, games seem to happen around them. If the team is to achieve their ultimate goal in 2022, sitting back and reacting won’t cut it. In his autobiography, Jack O’Connor talks about the need for every player on the field to be a “presence”. Bringing in the likes of Adrian Spillane and Dan O’Donoghue (and then Dylan Casey), as well as shifting Tadhg Morley to centre back, has made a difference. Now it’s time to add a permanent goalkeeper and an aggressive, dynamic midfielder to the mix.

Sem’s brave bid Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on a rip-roaring Hogan Cup final

St Brendan’s made a brave bid to win their fifth Hogan Cup at sun-splashed Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day but they came up short in a thrilling final. It was wonderful to be back in Croke Park last week. Where else would one rather be on our national saint’s day? Traditionally, Croke Park staged the Railway Cup matches on March 17, but for some decades now it has been the venue for the All-Ireland Club senior finals. This time, the club finals made way for the youthful exuberance of colleges football and hurling. The magnificent playing surface was so welcoming in its emerald green. The wind was blowing across the field and down to Hill 16 - now vacant with no Dubs in sight. There is always a wind factor in Croker, but both teams handled it very well. The pre-match banter by the supporters from both colleges was very good humoured, entertaining and colourful. For the majority of the players, who were sprinting out on to the hallowed ground for the first time, this was a special moment in time. They were on their Field of Dreams. It has been at least 12 years since their first football boots were laced by mom and dad and relaced several times by those wonderful coaches in the local clubs. This was a

moment to savour.

BRILLIANT FOOTBALL

Both teams came to win and played accordingly. This was a top-class game of football, played as it should be. No negative lateral-passing and 14 behindthe-ball ploys, which are unfortunately and regrettably so common at club and intercounty levels. Donegal are the real culprits, as we saw in the recent National League game in the Park. St Brendan’s and Naas CBS played with rare abandon and flair that entertained us to the final whistle, a whistle that was rarely used. Referee Paul Faloon (Down) was anonymous for the most part and that is the real test of a good referee. Youth had its fling. The young men played the ball and it was easy to apply the rules. Despite all these positives, they won’t erase the disappointment of the St Brendan’s players and management. They were up against Naas CBS, backboned by six Raheens club members. That club has won 10 Kildare SFC titles and one Leinster club, but no All-Ireland. Also, Naas CBS were beaten finalists in 2019 - the last time the competition was played - and three of that team are now regular Kildare seniors. The Sem score of 2-15 would win most

CROKE PARK matches, but it wasn’t enough. Why?

SUPERIOR

In short, they met a superior team and though they came close at several stages of the game, the Sem just could not pull back that two-point deficit. Full credit to Brendan’s, especially for the heroic second half display. They had a mountain to climb at half-time trailing by six points and facing that wind into the Davin End in the second half. The free-scoring Naas full forward line scored 3-7 and that would break the heart of any defence. Left corner forward Kevin Cummins was particularly impressive; the clinical finisher scored 2-3 from play and also added two points from frees in a Man of the Match display. Naas CBS had a very well-executed team strategy: play to your strengths and finish clinically. They had a very reliable base. Keeper David McPartlin was magnificent in priming the grenades. He thundered out some massive kickouts, going long throughout and invar-

iably picking out his midfielders Dara Crowley and Daire Guerin, who fielded magnificently. Leo Randles and Killian O'Sullivan strove valiantly, but the Naas men controlled play and for the most part delivered directly into the full forwards. Brendan’s tried valiantly, but Naas used a sweeper strategically between Brendan’s numbers 11 and 14. When the Sem worked their way into the scoring zone they were met by a tough tackling, man-marking defence. Invariably, they were unable to get through, especially in that first half. Over the hour team captain Cian McMahon did score four points, two from frees, but on this occasion didn’t wreak the scoring havoc we have witnessed so often from him in Kerry.

SHINE AND CROWLEY

The Sem’s best forward was William Shine, who scored 1-4 from play and one point from a free. The Legion man’s scoring kept the Sem in the game. Luke Crowley, playing his first full game for

65

d falls short some months after recovering from a back injury, had a quiet enough first half, but excelled in the second. For the restart the Brendan’s management made strategic moves to claw back that six-point deficit. Crowley benefitted most from his switch to full forward after spending the first half at right half forward. The Sem threw off the shackles and went more direct. Crowley kicked the points (0-3), as his father John did so often for Kerry. One of the most memorable moments in that second half was the delightful skill displayed by Luke Crowley. Blink and you’d miss it. It came straight out of his basketball skillset. Brilliant. Not even renowned basketball/football player Kieran Donaghy produced such a gem during his Kerry career. I saw the same quickas-a-flash handwork only once ever, coincidently in the same ground. Kerry were well on top eight minutes into the game when an exasperated full back, who had already conceded 1-4 to his immediate opponent, bore down on the Kerry full forward. This player had his back to goal with very little room to turn so he too used his basketball nous – quick hands and an even quicker brain - to bamboozle his frustrated opponent. That full for-

ward was Brian Clarke when Kerry Vocational Schools trounced Offaly 4-15 to 1-5 to capture the in 1992 All-Ireland title. Killian O’Sullivan sent in a great first time ball three minutes into the second period. It fooled one of the Naas defenders and Shine pounced for a morale boosting goal. Now the Sem were on their game and definitely in the game, just three points behind. Naas were on the defensive as the Sem built their attacks for the elusive three points they needed to draw level. In my opinion, they had their worst period after Shine’s goal. Well on top, they had four clear opportunities to raise white flags which would have put them ahead. They were all scoreable, but these wides were significant factors in determining the match result. McMahon and Crowley brought it down to a one-point game by the 54th minute (2-12 to 1-14). The Sem have been brilliant in close finishes throughout this campaign so hopes were high. Would they snatch victory at the death?

KILLER GOAL

Sadly, top scorer Kevin Cummins broke their hearts with a clinical goal - his second – and this killed any chance of the Hogan Cup coming south. It seemed as

if that goal would break the heart of the Sem men, but true to form they battled bravely and adopted the correct strategy in that nail-biting finish: lofting the ball in high and fast. They were rewarded when substitute Mark O’Shea - a younger brother of Paul, the Kilcummin and Kerry player - did so well to score a goal despite all the bodies in the Davin End goal. Now it was back to a two-point game well into time added on. Would the Sem force a draw and get one hand on the Hogan Cup? Naas CBS rallied and showed their title-winning credentials by going right down the field and scoring a point directly after a Sem score. Brendan’s could not get to level terms as David McPartlin opened up Route 1. That was a key factor in victory. Their forwards kept the scoreboard ticking over, led by the lethal Cummins. St Brendan’s gave it everything, but that wasn’t enough as the better team won on merit. Thus ended a thriller.

When Lia Thomas won the 500-yard freestyle at the 2022 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships last week, a long-simmering topic was brought to the boil. Thomas’ victory makes her the first transgender woman to win an NCAA swimming championship, a milestone which led the president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, to claim that the “integrity of women’s sport… and actually the future of women’s sport, is very fragile”. Meanwhile, Erica Sullivan, an Olympian who finished third in that 500-yard freestyle, says she is proud to compete alongside Thomas. “As a woman in sports,” Sullivan wrote in Newsweek, “I can tell you that I know what the real threats to women's sports are: sexual abuse and harassment, unequal pay and resources and a lack of women in leadership. Transgender girls and women are

nowhere on this list.” Which one of these key stakeholders is right? For the majority of fans and athletes, this is a relatively new and very complicated subject and I think many of us are still trying to wrap our heads around it. Broadly speaking, public opinion seems to be siding with Coe. Thomas has legions of detractors worldwide, many of whom cite the apparent “unfair advantage” she has over cis (biological) women. The American was assigned male at birth and experienced male puberty before transitioning and coming out as trans while in college. While I do believe that a good number of people on this side of the debate have sincere concerns about fairness and sporting integrity, let’s not kid ourselves here: others are simply transphobic. Some people don’t recognise a transgender woman’s right to identify as a

woman. If that’s your starting point then of course you’re not going to condone a transgender woman competing against cis women. The likes of the Daily Mail and Fox are notorious scaremongers and they would have you believe that the Thomas case will lead to armies of men simply deciding they are trans so they can take over women’s sport. Firstly, this is massively disrespectful to Thomas as it suggests that her transition is inauthentic. Secondly, who are these men who are willing to officially change their gender and subject themselves to hormone therapy, just so they can beat women at sport? I suppose everyone is entitled to their own opinions but, as a general rule, if you find that your opinions are aligning with the vomitous losers who write hate-fuelled columns in the Daily Mail, it’s definitely worth re-evaluating your position. The fact that transphobia is driving at least some of the anti-trans-women-inwomen’s-sport rhetoric has naturally brought about a strong reaction from people in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as those on the left. For some peo-

ple on this side, it’s black and white: trans women are entitled to equality. That means being treated the same way any other woman would be treated, in any given sphere. Then there are the people in the middle, people who support LGBTQ+ rights in general, or who might even consider themselves an “ally”, but still have questions. How can Thomas, who effectively has a male body (though she has undergone significant hormone therapy), be grouped with cis women in competition? Men and women are segregated in sport for pretty basic biological reasons. If Thomas and other trans women are allowed to compete against cis women, does that mean that those biological differences don’t matter? Equality and inclusion are beautiful things in the real world but sport isn’t really the real world. There are divisions and handicaps and separations in the interest of fair competition. I think this nuance is, perhaps, lost on some. On the other hand, certain cis women are naturally built differently to other cis women. I’m built differently to Tommy Walsh but I’ve shared a football pitch with him. Should that be allowed? (Probably not, but for different reasons.) This debate really boils down to one very loaded question: does real life equality trump sporting equality? What do you think? Should trans women be allowed to compete in women’s sport? Major handball event to be held at Spa Hall | By Con Dennehy Handball is set to be off the wall in Killarney this weekend when some of the leading up and coming stars of Irish handball fight it out for top honours at the Spa 1 Wall Slam competition.

ELITE: Drew Hanlen puts NBA All-Star star Joel Embiid through his paces.

Top NBA coach to host Killarney clinic

He coaches elite NBA talent like Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum and Zach LaVine and soon he’ll be coming to Killarney to impart his wisdom to the local basketball community. After enjoying a fine college career, Drew Hanlen turned his hand to coaching and now he makes a living out of moulding the games of the world’s best basketballers. Killarney native and Irish senior women’s head coach James Weldon has arranged for Hanlen to host a clinic at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Sunday, April 24. The event has been billed as “a rare opportunity for all basketball enthusiasts, coaches and players to learn from the best”. "We have hosted some very successful basketball camps over the years and they have been huge learning opportunities for all participants,” Weldon said. “The presence of Drew Hanlen at this event is massive considering his close association with some of the greatest players in the NBA. All those attending should really benefit from his expertise and knowledge.” Hanlen is widely recognised in the USA as an NBA Strategic Skills Coach, Performance Coach, and CEO of Pure Sweat Basketball, a training firm with a growing list of NBA players. His high-profile clients include Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers), Tatum (Boston Celtics), LaVine (Chicago Bulls), Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards), RJ Barrett (New York Knicks), and Tyler Herro (Miami Heat) amongst others.

“My ultimate goal is to help as many players as possible reach the level of success that they dream of, and take them beyond what they even think is capable,” Hanlen says. “That’s my mission statement and my personal belief.” “Drew Hanlen is a big reason I am the player I am today," Tatum says of the NBA trainer. "He has really improved my game since I was 13 and continues to find ways for me to improve.” NBA All-Star forward Embiid also says he has benefited from Hanlen’s coaching. “Drew has taught me a lot. He really breaks down my game and always finds ways to help me get better.” As a senior point guard for Belmont University in 2011-12, Hanlen averaged 10.8 points and 3.9 assists a game. Once he realised he was never going to be tall enough to play in the NBA, he became obsessed with learning the micro nuances of the game through film study. Drew has watched and broken down every single made field goal in the NBA over the last eight seasons. He has studied close to a million video clips of game film. Since the 2012 NBA Draft, he has helped more than 30 players get drafted, including at least one lottery pick in each of the last seven drafts. Apart from working with his clients through strategic workout programmes to improve specific aspects of their game, as well as film and analytic consulting, Hanlen also travels around the world hosting clinics and seminars. For more information or to book a place at the Killarney clinic, call James Weldon on 087 2907455.

Hosted by the progressive Spa Killarney Handball Club, this national tournament takes place at the magnificent Spa GAA facility. The action will get underway this Saturday at 11.30am. “We are delighted with the response and will have 40 players in various grades competing in 50 games during the day,” said Eoin O’Donoghue, Tournament Director and PRO of the Spa Killarney Handball Club. “There will be plate and cup competitions for five grades including Men’s B, Men’s C, Ladies’ B, Ladies’ C and Masters 45-plus.” The tournament has attracted players

from Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Mayo, Roscommon, Galway and Dublin. Killarney players are expected to feature prominently on the winner’s podium with Brendan O’Donoghue tipped for honours in the Masters category. In the 2019 Munster Master A competition, O’Donoghue became the first Spa/ Killarney man to win a Munster championship silver medal and an All-Ireland handball silver in the highly ranked Master's 55 B final. In the Ladies B competition, Aoife Walsh (Spa Killarney), a winner at the ‘She’s Ace’ Tournament in Northern Ireland earlier this year, is also tipped for success along with her club colleagues Sinead Moriarty and Niamh Faulds in the Ladies C tournament. Other Killarney competitors expect to challenge for top honours include Sarah Dineen, Neill Horgan, David Gillespie, Kieran O’Brien, Sheila Kelliher, Bríd Horgan and Laura Sweeney.

MOTORSPORT BRIEFS... |

Buckley wins the cup

London-based Rockfield co-driver Shane Buckley was the best of the Kerry contingent on the West Cork Rally taking fourth overall alongside Daniel Cronin in their Volkswagen Polo RC2. Buckley took home the Mike Cornes Memorial Trophy, presented to either London Irish Motor Club or Craven Motor Club members – both clubs, led by the late Cornes, promoted overseas participation in the West Cork Rally over the years. In his first event of the year, Rob Duggan netted an impressive second overall on the National section of West Cork Rally. With new co-driver John Falvey alongside, the crew enjoyed a weekend long battle with event winners James Stafford Tom Scanlon in their Darrian. Jack Kelleher, brother of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce president Niall, made the 17,600km journey from his Sydney home to compete on the event. It was a case of mission accomplished. He and co-driver Eoin O’Donoghue were under strict instructions to finish the rally in their Ford Fiesta so they could upgrade their race licence ahead of their next, as yet unannounced, Irish event. | Bob Moran’s unique record Glenflesk’s Bob Moran holds the Kerry record for the most amount of West Cork Rally starts. Only Cork drivers and visiting Welsh drivers (a huge part of West Cork Rally traditions) have made more than Bob’s 18 appearances on the event. The

Ford Escort driver won his class. Other finishers in the challenging twoday event included Fergus O’Meara and Ronald O’Riordan in their Ford Escort and Ray O’Neill and Padraig O’Donovan who were second in their class in another Escort in what was their first West Cork Rally. Killarney co-driver Tommy Moynihan reported a few moments along the way as he and his driver Pat O’Connor ended the weekend second in class in their Mitsubishi Lancer E10. | Ring fourth in historic rally Alan Ring was fourth in his BMW M3 with deputising co-driver Denis O’Donovan in the passenger seat due to the unavailability of regular man Adrian Deasy. Robert Falvey finished in 11th place - two high-speed spins on Saturday and gearbox issues on Sunday morning were just some of the tribulations that the Escort driver faced over the weekend. Muckross-based Jason Farrell, had to battle hard to win the Junior section of the West Cork Rally. Farrell and co-driver Donagh Crowley claimed an early five-second lead on West Cork’s iconic Ring opener. The Kerry pilot extended his lead to 12.8 seconds over Donegal’s Ryan McHugh by the Junior’s halfway point. McHugh bounced back after service, however, going quickest on Ring 2 and Clogagh to take the lead. But Farrell managed to pip his Honda Civic rival on the final stage of the rally after trailing him by 0.7 seconds heading into Ballinascarthy.

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Athletic 1 Regional United 2. Our young Blues played Regional United from Limerick. Athletic found themselves behind with a few mins gone in the tie. To the credit of the lads and a few adjustments Athletic pushed back onto regional and were unlucky not to go in at least level at the break. Second half Athletic started how they finished the first half. and got the break through with ten mins to go from Cian Hegarty. From here you could only see one winner but Regional who had lots of quality themselves got a goal with few mins remaining. Great effort from the Athletic lads and a performance to be proud of. RESULT: U14 Cup - Killarney Athletic 4 Tralee Dynamos 1 (Liam O'Brien, Szymon Jasiński, Cillian Coffey, JJ O'Donoghue).

Killarney Legion GAA SAINT PATRICKS DAY: What the club definitely doesn't lack when it comes to the St Patrick's Day parade is an abundance of imagination and effort. And this year was no different. The display and turnout of green and white on our Patron Saints Day was once again uplifting and the Club owes a huge debt of gratitude to the team behind the effort. Patricia and her little team of wonders at Scallywags Playschool were busy in the lead up with their brilliant art work while Sharon O’Grady, Orla Culloty, Desiree Crowley, Linda O’Donoghue did sterling work. Ted Healy and Liam O'Toole made loveable chipmunks while Timmy O'Donoghue and wife Bernadette are never found wanting when it comes to effort. Well done all! HOGAN CUP FINAL: Hard luck to St Brendans College who just fell short to Naas CBS in an epic Hogan Cup Final encounter played in Croke Park on St Pat-

rick's Day. The Kildare school led for the majority of the game by varying margins but the manner in which the Sem fought back in the second half meant there was only a point between the sides heading down the final furlong. But Naas hit an all important third goal and despite a late St Brendans response they went down by a two point margin, 3-14 to 2-15. Aaron O'Sullivan was an ever solid presence between the posts, Darragh Fleming had a fine game at wing back but it would be remiss not to mention the performance of Will Shine. He tormented the Naas defence, slotting 1-5 in the process and his goal would stand alongside any goal ever scored in the GAA HQ. Young Sam Benson was also in the panel and being eligible again next year he will have gained huge experience from his involvement.
