PAGE SIX How To Vote

If Yo At Al u Can Out &l, Get Vote

Words: Adam Moynihan A lot of us might have conflicting opinions when it comes to today’s referendum but I think we can all agree on one thing: we’ll be glad to see the back of it. It’s clearly a hugely emotive issue and there has been a lot of animosity and ill-feeling throughout the past few months. Most of it has been unnecessary, and all of it has been draining. We’ve really been beaten over the head with arguments for ‘no’ and arguments for ‘yes’ and at this stage people have had their fill of posters and leaflets and ads and media coverage. It gets tiresome after a while. It would be a shame if people have been turned off voting, though, because it is probably one of the biggest issues that we’ll ever be asked our opinion on.

Voter turnout has always fascinated me. 60% of the population voted on the marriage equality bill in 2015, the fifth highest turnout for a referendum in the State’s history. The last general election saw a turnout of 65%. There’s no way of knowing for sure but it’s possible that the figures could be similar today. It’s mad when you think about it. With all the talk and furore surrounding this referendum, it’s conceivable that four out of every ten people won’t end up voting. I can understand voter apathy when it comes to local or general elections here in Ireland - sometimes it seems like competing candidates are two cheeks of the same arse. But there’s a huge difference between the Eighth Amendment being in our con-

In Memoriam

Killarney Mourns Snooker Legend Danny (46) The town of Killarney was left in a state of shock this week following the tragic passing of 46-year-old local man Danny McGough. The well-liked father of three is considered by many to be one of the best snooker players the county of Kerry has ever produced, and his friends at the Cue Club provided a heart-warming guard of honour at his funeral yesterday. The hugely talented snooker player, who was originally from Loreto Road, took on the great Dennis Taylor when he was just 12 years of age and he went on to become one of the top amateurs in Ireland. Danny, son of Pat and the late Mary, is survived by his children Jason, Jessica and Matthew, their mother Anne Marie, his brothers Pat, John, Philip, Paul, Kevin, Alan and Brendan, sisters Mary and Rosaleen, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and colleagues at SPX Flow Technology. stitution and the Eighth Amendment not being in our constitution. It’s a decision that will have ramifications for literally millions of women. There’s so much at stake. If you physically can’t make it to your polling station, that’s fair enough. Some people’s lives are more hectic than others. But you would seriously have to question someone who abstains simply because they can’t be bothered. At the risk of sounding like your dad, people died for your right to vote and have your say in a free and democratic Ireland, and this particular issue could be a matter of life or death for someone you know. If you can at all, get out and vote. Future generations will thank you.

Firstly, make sure you know where you’re voting. This information will be printed on your polling card. You should also plan when you’re going to vote. The polls are open from 7am to 10pm so you have 15 hours to work with. Leave your badges, signs and jumpers at home. Campaigning is not permitted at polling stations. This applies to posters, leaflets, flags, banners and anything that encourages a vote for one side over the other. If you arrive wearing something that promotes one side over the other, you may be asked to remove it. Don’t take a selfie or any photograph in the voting booth. Voting is done by secret ballot and the Department of the Environment says that: “taking photographs and the sharing of any photograph of a ballot paper marked at an election or a referendum could have the potential to compromise the integrity and secrecy of a ballot and may constitute an offence”. You can take a photo outside the polling station either before or after you’ve voted, but not inside. Don’t forget your polling card or other form of official identification. You should have received a polling card but you don’t need it to vote. You must bring a valid form of personal identification, such as a passport, official student identification or driving licence, with you when you go to vote. Read the question being asked in the ballot very carefully and mark your answer with an ‘X’. You should mark ‘X’ in either the ‘yes’ or the ‘no’ box on the paper, then show the back of the ballot paper to the polling officials, fold it and place it in a sealed ballot box. Any other mark will spoil your vote. For voters with disabilities, if you are voting at a polling station, you may be helped to vote by utilising companion voting, assistance from the presiding officer or by using a tactile ballot paper template.

Service Dog Bosco Is The Horgan Family’s New Best Friend Words: Adam Moynihan

When Shane and Deirdre Horgan suspected that their youngest son, Fionn, might be autistic, they put his name on a waiting list for a service dog. Two years later, My Canine Companion gave them Bosco, an exceptionally talented Goldendoodle who has quickly become a much-loved member of the family. Their new furry friend is getting on great with Fionn (6) and his older brother Brian (8) and Shane says Bosco has already made a big difference. “Thankfully Fionn is mild on the spectrum but what we’ve noticed now is that whenever he’s crying or having a bit of a moment, Bosco will go over and sit down next to him. If we’re in town, Fionn might get a little over-sensitive to noise and things like that and he’ll start rubbing Bosco’s tail. It kind of distracts him from whatever’s going on. “We were at the beach one day and Fionn decided to run off. The dog ran after him, and then came back up to tell me where he was. He didn’t leave Fionn’s side for the rest of the day after that. Our biggest fear for Fionn is that he might wander off for five seconds

and he’s so quiet he wouldn’t answer if we called him. Hopefully when Bosco is fully trained we’ll be able to attach him to Fionn’s waist. If you commanded him to stay, he wouldn’t move and you could tell him to come and he wouldn’t run across the road or anything. It’s just a safety valve. “Talking is difficult for Fionn so when somebody comes and asks if they can pet the dog, we get the person to speak to him. It’s a good icebreaker and there’s a bit of social interaction, which is beneficial for Fionn.”

Visit

Officials “Hopeful” But Royal Visit Still Unconfirmed Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, are coming to Ireland in mid-June but officials in the know have restated the fact that any potential trip to Killarney is still up in the air. The couple will fly into Cork and it is believed they will also travel to Kerry. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser yesterday,

President of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Paul O’Neill said he was “hopeful” of a royal visit but there was nothing confirmed. If the Prince of Wales does visit our town with Camilla, he will be following in the footsteps of his greatgreat-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, who visited Heaven’s Reflex in 1861.

As a service dog, Bosco has access rights to shops and restaurants and Shane says that places in town have been very welcoming so far. It costs about €10,000 to train Bosco so the Horgans are currently selling raffle tickets to raise funds for My Canine Companion, the charity who have provided them with this life-changing service dog. As well as raising money, they’re also hoping to raise awareness about autism. “Sometimes it’s not just a bold child,” Shane explains. “There can be a lot of things going on. Simple things like eating and sleeping are difficult for Fionn. People need to be aware that when a kid is having a bit of a moment in Penneys or Dunnes, it’s probably an accumulation of loads of things that the child is struggling with.” Shane, a well-known local basketballer, says the fundraising has been going well. “Killarney people are brilliant,” he says. “They support everything.” The draw will take place on June 16 and there are plenty of terrific prizes up for grabs. To buy a ticket, contact Shane directly on 086 3740220.

News Briefs ... Johnny Buckley Leaves Kerry Squad Kerry’s All-Ireland hopes were dealt a major blow this week as Johnny Buckley announced that he won’t be making himself available for selection for the upcoming championship. Buckley, a versatile player who can operate in midfield or in the half forward line, cited work commitments as the reason for his decision. He is the Chief Operations Manager with Kerry Coaches, a company he runs with his father, Mike. With a busy summer on the cards, the Dr Crokes man has opted to take a step back from the Kerry fold. Last year’s captain has struggled with injury this season but he is certainly an influential player on his day and he will be sorely missed. Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice is said to have left the door open for Buckley should he wish to make his return in the future.

Fine Times & Good Company Rebrand At Major Colgan’s On Monday Major Colgan’s pub, formerly The Jarvey’s Rest, at Muckross Park Hotel & Spa welcomed over 90 local B&B and guesthouse owners to their rebrand and season launch evening. Showcasing the newly renovated pub, enhanced menu options and its renowned Irish Night Pub show, guests were welcomed with a drinks reception in the medieval atrium where Muckross Park Hotel General Manager Daniel O’Connor introduced Minister Brendan Griffin to the audience. Guests later enjoyed a three course meal followed by an Irish Night Pub show. Also in attendance on the night were Senator Paul Coghlan and historian and genealogist Mr John Colgan. Speaking on the night, General Manager Daniel O’Connor said: “With a polished new interior and an impressive new kitchen designed to enhance the service experience for diners, owners iNua Hospitality have invested over €250,000 in the refurbishment of the venue. The interior of Colgan’s now has a fresher, brighter look and feel. With smart wooden floors, a handsome new bar counter and comfy upholstered chairs and stools, there is also a larg-

er kitchen to allow for an enhanced service and dining experience, with a focus on high quality Irish-themed menus designed by Executive Chef and Kerry native John O’Leary.” The choice of the new name, Major Colgan’s, is to honour one of the hotel’s previous owners and an unsung national hero who fell in love with Killarney and the hotel itself when stationed in nearby Muckross House during WWII. Major Colgan’s is open seven days a week for the season serving great food daily, entertainment by leading Irish band Onora and The Sinseoiri Dancers continues to be available four nights per week. The renowned Irish Night pub show takes place Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for the season ahead and there will be music every Friday night. In the heart of Killarney’s National Park, just 4km from Killarney town centre, Major Colgan’s at the five-star Muckross Park Hotel & Spa is a landmark stop on the Ring of Kerry, close to The Wild Atlantic Way and – in honour of its history – an appropriate celebration of fine times spent in good company. Killarney basketball legend and former mayor Paudie O’Connor was fondly remembered at his funeral mass in St Mary’s Cathedral last Saturday morning. Killarney Parish Administrator Fr Kieran O’Brien, chief celebrant, recalled Paudie’s outstanding sporting and political career. There were also emotional tributes from Paudie’s daughter, Morgan, and his brother, Séamie. The huge crowd in the Cathedral included several people from all parts of Ireland as former teammates and opponents gathered to pay their respects. Killarney came to a standstill as the hearse went through the streets. Paudie’s former club and international teammate Tim Regan led the basketball guard of honour while Dr Crokes chairman Patrick O’Sullivan led the GAA contingent. A Crokes flag and Paudie’s famous number 12 basketball singlet with St Vincent’s Killarney adorned the urn in the hearse. At Aghadoe Cemetery, Séamie released two white doves in memory of his late brother. Paudie O’Connor passed away on May 1 at his home in Las Ve-

gas at the age of 66. He is still ranked as the greatest Irish basketball player of all time and represented Ireland over 100 times. A former Irish captain, he was the first and only Irish player ever to be selected on a European All-Star first five in 1977. His visionary skills and ambition took Irish basketball to a new level in 1979 when he brought the first American professional players to the league. He was also a driving force of the popular John Player and Pretty Polly Ladies Basketball Championships that used to attract over 120 teams from all over Ireland to Killarney every Easter in the 1970s and 80s. A funeral service also took place in Guardian Angel Cathedral, Las Vegas recently. Predeceased by his parents Mai (1987) and Dan (2001) and brother Benny (2009), Paudie is survived by his beloved daughter, Morgan (nee O’Connor) Mauro, and her mother, Marty; son-in-law, Marcello Mauro; grandson, Luciano Connor Mauro; brothers, Séamie and Mike; sistersin-law, Fidelma and Peggy; nephews, Patrick, Richard and Philip O’Connor, relatives and a large circle of friends.

Friends and family gathered at Paudie O’Connor’s funeral. Front: Mike Butler, Tom Looney, Rory O’Flaherty, Pat Maher, Philip O’Connor and Connie Murphy. Centre: Noelle Crosbie, John Keogh, Donie Fleming and Noreen Coffey. Back: Séamie and Mike O’Connor, Joey Sheehan, Greg Creagh, Tim Regan, Andy Houlihan and John Cooney.

The Chatroom

Opening

Killarney Water Rescue This week, on one of the most glorious evenings of the year, we hit Loch Lein for possibly the most scenic Chatroom yet! Killarney Advertiser’s Kieran Healy felt safe as houses in a boat surround by members of The Killarney Water Rescue team. Jimmy, Sinéad, Isobel and Alice Sweetman along with Diane Healy told us all about the great work the Killarney Water Rescue do. Diane and Sinéad filled us in on the charity skydive that they’re hold-

ing in an attempt to raise much needed funds. The amazing work the guys do is NOT state funded so they appreciate every cent that is given to them by the people of Killarney and, indeed, our neighbours over in Kenmare. You can catch this visually stunning episode of The Chatroom tonight Friday, May 18 at 9pm on our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie and also on our Facebook page, where you will also find links to donate to this great service!

Coffee fans are in for a real treat today as The Black Sheep Cafe opens its doors for the very first time. Located in Unit 1, New Market Lane (where Plan B used to be), the cafe will serve speciality coffee, loose leaf tea, pancakes and smoothies. The project is the brainchild of Kevin Leahy, proprietor of the hugely successful Black Sheep Hostel and Richard Ivan from the classy Curious Cat Wine Bar. “I’m a fan of coffee but it’s more the coffee culture that I like,” Kevin explains. “We want to create that cafe vibe, and it’ll be a venue where we can have gigs

as well. We want to do something a bit different. We’ve also got our own brand of coffee with two different types of beans: one from Costa Rica and one from Guatemala.” Staff at The Black Sheep Café have been perfecting their skills under the guidance of a barista trainer so customers can expect a truly authentic cafe experience. New Market Lane has become a vibrant little corner of the town and this new cafe is sure to be an excellent addition. Doors officially opened at 8.30am this morning. Best of luck to Kevin and Richard in their new venture.

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Women Need Protecting In Ireland There is a passage in King Lear which is not the most memorable but, like other less lyrical passages, it has stuck with me. It is quite dark. What with the forced retirement and his daughters pushing him into the 16th century version of the workhouse - the open bog - the world is becoming unhinged. The women, naturally, good or bad, are to blame. And they will all pay for it too in the course of the play. For some of the curses against women in Lear, Billy Shakes would be up before the Incitement to Hatred Act today. But there is a wider disturbance going on and Shakes was no narrow thinker, or even misogynist. For one thing, nature is out of kilter and Lear’s tempest is not just in his mind. There is “savage and unnatural” dealing: there are late eclipses of the son and moon, brothers divide, sons are against fathers, there is “fratricide”, trees are flowering out of season, the order in society as well as in nature is upset. There is widespread change, in the climate and in the court. Widespread change always begets violence, whether it is the 16th century, the 20th or the 21st - some sector is turned upon and bears the brunt of the collective anger. That’s the human record. This is a country which in the past two decades has suffered incredible change. I was at a wonderful ceremony in the INEC during the week in which around 3,500 people from 120 countries were conferred with citizenship. And it was exactly that, a conferring, with a bit of pomp

and a lot of joy. The main speaker was retired high court judge Bryan McMahon, son of the Listowel playwright. No surprise then that in quiet but lyrical phrases he resonated the dramatic changes in Irish society. Names that were “unthinkable in this country ten or 15 years ago” were now appearing on GAA programmes, he said. And he urged the new Irish, as did the minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan, to actively participate in their communities; McMahon interestingly used the word “gently” introduce themselves. And he said do not forget your own stories, your old country. The Irish will not resent that because more than most they understand emigration. In even better interests of integration a language test is to be introduced, Department of Justice officials said. This is because some people cannot speak English five years after arriving here. The language test is in the interests of “integration”. It was a bright hopeful moment in a sad week dominated by the dark random murders of a woman and a young girl, probably by Irish men. These past weeks have seen awful violence against women in Ireland. In the earlier part of this year we have seen the violent attitude and hate speech in and from the body of a court in Belfast. By and large it is Irish men, not the dark-skinned foreigners, who are the perpetrators. We no longer think like Shakespeare or people bred in the 17th century. We no longer use the wide lens and see

Health System Needs A Heart I am no heart specialist. But there is something rotten in the heart of the Irish health system. For the most part, it has no heart. The whole thing seems to be dancing to the beat of money and a desire to protect money. Let’s add it up: There is the deliberate cover-up, not just in the cervical smear tests, but in our very own UKH where thousands of patients had to have scans rechecked. Medics spotting those tests never seem to say to themselves, “my God this is a human being’s life”. It could matter if they knew. The private is no better than the public. It may even be worse. We pay fortunes for private health insurance to skip the queues. So with your private insurance, you go along to see the consultant specialist in the private hospital, and you find out, in fact, that man does not take any appointments. What he does is bring ten people in all at the same time and they have to sit for hours waiting for his lordship’s five-minute look. That will be €160 please. The first thing you are asked is to show him the money… In cash preferably. Then sit. Your time does not matter. His does. His is money. He has spent years training in awful hospitals. He deserves the plush office now. Next. GPs are so busy and it is so difficult to get appointments. For making an honest mistake and missing an appointment, you get the head chewed off you by the front woman (and why are all medical secretaries female?). It deprives another

patient! Guilt is plastered on and boy, do they know how to do this. Yeah? Nothing about depriving them of their fee? Better just keep the mouth shut. You might need them in the middle of the night! Apart from the money, the thing that stands out in all of the system is the utter heartlessness of it all. Is it because so many points are needed to get into medical courses and these people have to regurgitate so much “knowledge” the stuffing is knocked out of them even before they get to study medicine? Severe anaemia has set in? But let’s look, too, at the mind-set of the administrators in health. Many of these people are not the brightest sparks. But they have risen in a system devoid of talent or even of intelligence. What they must have, though, is a complete lack of empathy, an ability to stonewall, cover up, lie if necessary. A lack of heart, in other words. And they are all overpaid, by and large. So we are back to the basic addition of one and one makes two: money is the root of the evil in the health system. The solution of course is quite simple. Blindingly simple: set up a State health system where GPs, consultants, the whole lot of them are employed directly by the State and pay them a reasonable wage. First though, take their pulse. Much like the robot test of the websites. Go back to an interview system which will not just assert, but ensure, that the people who work in our health system, at every level, have a heart.

the pattern and join the dots. We are all now specialists in our own corners. We are all the Edmund’s of King Lear - the least liked person who holds every action down to the individual and nothing to do with the sun, moon and stars. Like him, we are caged in our “scientific” thinking. We no longer join the dots. We see only the trees, not the wood. A golden age for women is painfully dawning. The power of the male throne is being threatened. Men feel they are losing their place. The old truths no longer hold. Four women have died violently at the hands of men so far this year. Eight men took the lives of women last year, violently, in Ireland. The Irish male particularly feels cornered. The Women’s Council of Ireland this week said it was alarmed by this outbreak of “femicide”. They blamed it on the rise in the consumption of pornography from a young age. A news editor I know said it was the violent videos young men watched. Someone else said it was drink. Another, drugs. These are all trees in the forest. Women need protecting in Ireland. They need to protect themselves in these dangerous times. But, more than this, Irish men need “integrating” into the new society. And they need help to do this. Now, if our various departments could join the dots, and look to the welfare of the old Irish, they would come up with a “quit the old thinking reassurance programme” and offer a test. I am serious.

St Finan’s For Sale

It is decision time. St Finan’s, apart from a small section on the Lewis Road site, is likely to be sold, lock, stock and barrel - not piecemeal if no state agency wants it. The reply came to Cllr Brendan Cronin this week. He asked for an update. This is what the council arm of the state told him: “The Council has been in ongoing discussions with the HSE regarding their St Finan’s campus including a further meeting in recent weeks. Members will be aware that the HSE is advancing plans for a new facility on the Lewis Road end of the campus. The Council has expressed an interest in acquiring a portion of the remaining lands. It has been confirmed at this point by

the HSE that apart from the piece of ground being utilised for their new facility, that the remainder of the site will not be further subdivided and will not be offered in smaller lots. The remainder of the site (including all buildings and remaining lands) has been offered for sale at market value to other State agencies under established protocols. If no interest or offer is made under this process then the site will be offered on the open market. The outcome of that process is awaited.” Lest we forget, Muckross House was saved for this State by a group of local people led by the Killarney Urban Council. Time for our current lot to step up to the mark now with St Finan’s. This is their test.

3,500 People Become Irish Citizens At INEC Pics: Valerie O’Sullivan

Around 3,500 citizens from 120 countries became citizens of Ireland at a ceremony in the INEC on Monday. It was the first time a citizenship ceremony on this scale took place outside of Dublin. 683 Polish nationals were granted Irish citizenship, the most of any country, while 388 Romanians were also naturalised. The UK was third on the list; 93-year-old Claude Cooke was one of 339 British people to be become an Irish citizen in Killarney.

Community College Honours Top Students Last Thursday night was a star-studded occasion in Killarney Community College as teachers, students, parents and distinguished guests assembled for the annual awards ceremony to honour and recognise students in the college. The awards night at Killarney Community College has now become an annual tradition and it gives the whole school community an opportunity to reflect on some of the achievements of the students. Awards were presented across a range of categories: academia, technology, culture, leadership, ethos, sports and extra-curricular activities, amongst others. Robyn Sheehan was voted by the teachers as the Student of the Year as during her 6 years in the school, she has endeared herself to everyone through her commitment, pleasant disposition, work ethos and involvement with all areas of school life. The prestigious Principal’s Award went to Grace O’Sullivan for her overall contribution to the school. Grace has lead the way academically, demonstrating that dedication, hard work and a sense of purpose is a lifelong skill that can achieve so much. Kate Stack received the Senior Sports Awards as recognition of her outstanding contribution to sport in the college and with her respective clubs. Caoimhe Crowley and Martha Fitzgerald won an award in the Junior Sports category in recognition of their sporting prowess.

Skal Club Present Eckhard Gogsch Award

The Skal Club of Kerry in co-operation with the Irish Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at IT Tralee recently presented Michelle O’Sullivan, a first year Higher Certificate in Arts and Hotel Operations student, the 2018 Eckhard Gogsch Service and Skills Award. Eckhard was a hugely popular personality in the local tourism trade having spent his entire life working at different levels in the industry. He was born and reared near the spectacular Lake Constance in Germany and moved to Killarney in 1968 to take up a position in the Hotel Europe as waiter. He also worked in sister hotel, The Dunloe Castle, and has lived in Killarney since then. In the mid 1980’s, Eckhard took up a position with Fáilte Ireland, the state agency Cert and was centre manager in many of their training schools at the former Torc Great Southern Hotel, Rosslare Great Southern, Dromhall Hotel and Kenmare Bay. It was in these schools that students were prepared for careers in the tourism industry. Students acquired a range of

skills, food preparation, restaurant service, accommodation service, bar and front office as well as business operations and communications. Eckhard always stressed to students that working in the hospitality industry was rewarding and there were ample opportunities for career progression. In addition to formal training and practical experience, Eckhard had the ability to inspire and motivate and demonstrate excellent customer skills to the students. He always used to say that a satisfied customer tells at least three people whereas an angry customer tells 3,000. He later started a freelance tour company with his wife Patricia, bringing visitors from all over the world to Ireland and leading them on great adventures throughout the country. Eckhard was a very active member of the Kerry Skal Club since its inception 21 years ago and the decision was made to present this fantastic award in his memory. Speaking at the ceremony, club members also expressed their hopes that his wife Patricia would be taking up the mantel.

Biodiversity At the launch of Biodiversity Week, a seven-day event aimed at celebrating Kerry’s natural heritage, were Margaret O’Shea, Diana Fawsitt, Harry O’Donoghue, Bríd Colhoun, Tadhg Kelleher, Agnes Pahler (volunteer from Germany), Martin Veskilt, Ille Muul, Billy Horan, Pat Donovan and Eric Hood.

Walking Festival To Benefit Kerry Parents & Friends Killarney provides the most natural setting in the world to host a walking festival and this year’s event takes place from Saturday, June 23 to Sunday, June 24. Taking on some of Europe’s most iconic treks on Carrauntoohil, Coomloughra Horse Shoe and vertical ridges not for the faint-hearted on the Eastern Reeks. Base Camp will be located at Kate Kearney’s Cottage. Organisers are delighted to announce that this year’s charity walk - A Sun ‘Set’ on Strickeen (Friday, June 22) - will be in aid of Kerry Parents and Friends’ Bus Fund. Kerry Parents and Friends has played an enormous role in the lives of families in Kerry, living with intellectual difficulties. The charity walk departs Kate Kearney’s Cottage at the

entrance to the Gap of Dunloe at 7.30pm. Walkers will be asked to dance an entire Kerry Polka on the summit, just bring a tin whistle and a bodhrán. Strickeen is part of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountain range. At 440m, it follows a path to the top until an ancient cairn/ritual greets the walker.

For more bookings, information and a full table of events, check out www.killarneywalkingfestival.ie or contact event organiser John O’Sullivan on 087 239 9789/info@killarneywalkingfestival.ie.

School

Two Mile Families Enjoy 5K Walk Families from Two Mile Community National School and Little Explorers Preschool recently took part in a 5k walk in the National Park. It was the first outing organised by the school’s Parent Association. “We are delighted that so many people attended,” said Caroline Riordan, PA Chairperson. “All families were represented and the children had a great day.” The school opened its doors in August 2017. Community National Schools foster an environment that encourages parental involvement in all aspects of school life. “We are very fortunate in Two Mile CNS to have a committed Parent Association who support the teachers in their work,” said Principal Catherine Barry.

Kerry Education And Training Board’s Pioneering Parents Forum Kerry Education and Training Board recently held its fourth and final Parents Forum for the 2017/18 school year. Parents attending this forum are representing members from their respective parents councils. The forum was first established in 2006 to promote effective liaison and consultation between schools and parents and to promote the interest of the students in the eight ETB schools. This year’s agenda covered areas such as the Kerry ETB Strategy, ICT advancements, physical education priorities, mental health awareness, new Junior Cycle curriculum developments and discussions on healthy eating and well-being. Of major interest was the feedback from the first online applied maths curriculum that was piloted in Kerry ETB Schools this year. This involved fifth year students undertaking online classes via Skype on Tuesdays from 6-8pm with professional teaching support delivered during Saturday classes hosted in the IT Tralee. This proposal came from the Parents Forum last year. Ann O’Dwyer,

Director of Schools thanked the Parents Forum for suggesting this initiative and for generating new and pioneering ideas. At the forum Jeremy Wrenn, Schools ICT Support Officer from Kerry ETB, introduced the new Junior Cycle ICT course that is planned for Kerry ETB schools in 2018/19. Its introduction is further proof of Kerry ETB’s commitment to giving it students the most up

to date ICT skills that will ensure they are fully equipped with the relevant 21st century educational tools when they leave school after Leaving Certificate. The Parents Forum welcomed this new course and were also offered places on a Technology for Parents course that will be delivered free of charge by Kerry ETB in September. At the conclusion of the Parents Forum the importance of parents coming together to share their ideas and experiences from their respective parents councils was reiterated, as was the necessity of parents having their voices and opinions heard by the Kerry ETB management. Rosari O’ Connor, Chairperson took the opportunity to sincerely thank David Musgrave (Killarney Community College), Helen O’Brien (Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí) and Cathy O’Donovan (Coláiste na Sceilge) for their outstanding service as their tenures on their parents councils have now come to an end. The agenda for the 2018/19 school was set with the forum looking forward to continuing its great work next year.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

CAR FINANCE Many car dealers offer Personal Contract Plans (PCPs) as a method to purchase a car. Initially PCPs can appear attractive as they usually involve low monthly repayments. Furthermore these plans are usually arranged in the dealership where you chose your vehicle. However, PCPs are very complex and contain considerable terms and conditions. It is therefore very important that a purchaser would be fully informed of all the terms and conditions before entering into such an agreement. A PCP can be broken into three parts namely the deposit, the monthly repayments and a final lump sum payment which is called the Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV). The deposit is usually between ten and thirty percent of the value of the car. The monthly repayments usually last for three years and they generally have low monthly repayments. This can make them appear to be affordable in comparison with other forms of finance. The reason for this is because you don’t pay for a large portion of the cost of the car until the end of the Contract. The GMFV or lump sum payment is the final large payment which must be paid by you if you wish to own the car at the end of the Contract. This figure is set at the beginning of the Contract by the lender.

In general, a PCP is not flexible in that you cannot increase your repayments each month if you so wish and if you wish to extend term you will be charged a rescheduling fee if approved. The main difference between a PCP and a personal loan is that with a personal loan, when you borrow money, pay for the car, you own it immediately. With a PCP you don’t own the car until such time as you pay the final large lump sum. In effect, you are essentially hiring the vehicle for an agreed period of time. If you were to run into financial difficulty during the term of your contract, you wouldn’t be able to sell the car unless you have permission from the lender as they are the legal owner of the car. It is therefore very important that all the terms and conditions are reviewed prior to entering into such an agreement. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Wedding of the week

Mayor Niall & Linda Say ‘I do’ The eyes of the world may have been firmly fixed on another wedding last Saturday but Killarney had a famous wedding of its own as Mayor Niall Kelleher his partner Linda Gordon at St Mary’s Cathedral. Politicians rarely turn down an opportunity to address a large crowd but Niall and Linda decided to forego the traditional speeches and instead allowed their children (Niall’s son, Noah Mayse Kelleher and Linda’s daughter, Portia) to welcome the 370 guests to the reception at the Great Southern Hotel. Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin was in attendance as were a number of party TDs. World-famous musician Liam O’Connor played during dinner, Jack Patrick Healy performed for the drinks reception and wedding band Arklight kept the party going throughout the night. Niall’s brothers - Paudie, Jack and Donagh - all flew back from Australia to be groomsmen. Linda’s bridesmaids were Aisling Clifford, Sarah Gordon and Alison Williams. Noah, Portia, Linda’s four-month-old nephew Seán and Niall’s 19-month-old goddaughter Lily Mae completed the bridal party. The happy couple are travelling to Kenya and Zanzibar for their honeymoon, but not until Niall sees out his time as Mayor of Killarney. His term will come to an end in June. Congratulations to Niall and Linda from everyone at the Killarney Advertiser.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Gardaí Issue Fresh Appeal In Jastine Valdez Murder Case Gardaí have issued a fresh appeal for help in the Jastine Valdez murder case. They are seeking the public’s assistance in finding her blue shoulder bag and her iPad mini. The 24-year-old student was abducted in Enniskerry on Saturday and her body was found in Rathmichael on Monday. Meanwhile a local drug dealer from South Dublin has contacted gardaí to say that Mark Hennessy had attempted to buy cocaine from him on the night of the murder, it has been reported. Gardaí are also said to be investigating whether the suspected killer was using dating apps and if he was stalking the 24-year-old student. The father-of-two was shot dead on Sunday night after he was confronted by gardaí, while Ms Valdez’s body was discovered in Rathmichael the next day. Gardaí have recovered CCTV of Mr Hennessy in a pub in Ballybrack showing him drinking. The 40-year-old was

unsuccessful in buying cocaine from this drug dealer but gardaí believe he procured cocaine later that night and he continued on a drink and drug binge until confronted in Cherrywood. A public memorial is being planned for Ms Valdez for next week. She will be laid to rest in her native Phillipines but plans are underway for a service here also. A GoFundMe page set up to help her parents has raised more than €118,000 – far surpassing its original target of €10,000. Raymond Garrett from Outreach Ireland says the outpouring of support for Jastine’s family has been incredible. “It is beyond belief how the Irish community, the Filipino community and the country as a whole has shown support,” he said. “It is not in any way compensation, it is just the only thing people can do looking on apart from looking on and wishing well, offering support is to give a small donation.”

Trump Corner Trump Cancels Historic Meeting With Kim Jong-Un President Donald Trump cancelled his historic nuclear summit with Kim Jong-Un on Thursday, accusing North Korea of “tremendous anger and open hostility.” The meeting, which would have marked the first face-to-face encounter between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader, was set for June 12 in Singapore. “Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,” Trump wrote in a letter to Kim, which was released yesterday. Stocks fell and gold rose after news of the cancellation broke. Much of the letter was written in seemingly friendly terms, including praise for North Korea’s recent release

Never fails to entertain

of three American prisoners. In contrast, Trump also appeared to issue a threat that conjured memories of his war of words with Kim last year. “You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used,” Trump wrote. The cancellation appeared to take South Korea’s government by surprise. The nation’s president, Moon Jae-in, had played a pivotal role in setting up recent diplomatic developments. A representative of Moon’s office said the South Korean administration was “trying to figure out what President Trump’s intention is and the exact meaning of it,” according to the country’s Yonhap News Agency. Moon and his aides convened emergency meetings to address the shock announcement, which broke shortly before midnight in Seoul.

Men Charged Over Attack On Irish Liverpool Fan

Two Italian men have appeared in court in Liverpool charged after the attack on Irish football fan Sean Cox outside Anfield last month. Daniele Sciusco (29) and Filippo Lombardi (20) were charged after an attack on the Liverpool supporter. Lombardi will stand trial in October after pleading not guilty to violent disorder and inflicting grievous bod-

ily harm, while Sciusco is to be sentenced after pleading guilty to violent disorder. Lombardi was also charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on Cox (53), who had travelled from Ireland to watch the Champions League match. The dad-of-three suffered serious head injuries and a month later remains in hospital at Walton Neurological Centre with his wife Martina at his bedside. The Dunboyne, County Meath man sustained a severe bleed on his brain and underwent a major operation before he was put into an induced coma.

Woman Fights Off Bear & Walks To Safety A 28-year-old woman walked away with a fractured skull after managing to fight off a grizzly bear in the US state of Montana. Amber Kornak had just started her dream job researching the fearsome animals when she was mauled by one on a remote mountain range this month. She managed to fend off the creature using Mace-like bear spray, then walked nearly two miles to her vehicle. Ms Kornak is in a stable condition in hospital, a friend said. Ms Kornak accepted a seasonal position as grizzly bear wildlife technician for the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Libby, Montana, on 10 May. On 17 May, while on assignment in the remote Cabinet Mountains, she was attacked by the grizzly, agency spokeswoman Jennifer Strickland said. Ms Kornak was able to reach a canister of bear spray, but accidentally sprayed it on herself before she was able to use it to ward off the animal. The repellant is made from the same ingredient as pepper spray.

According to a GoFundMe page set up by her friend, Ms Kornak was able to drive away and find help. She was flown to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where she received medical treatment for her fractured skull and severe wounds to her head, neck and back. “She endured 4 gruelling hours of surgery to remove bone fragments and clean wounds to her brain,” her friend’s post on the fundraising page reads. “Metal plates and screws were placed on her skull and drains were placed in her brain to relieve brain swelling and drain fluid.” The friend, Jenna Hemer, told the New York Daily News Ms Kornak was “passionate about all wildlife, but her dream and her primary focus was to work with grizzly bears”.

South African President Donates Half Of Salary To Charity

“I Am Not Guilty,” Says Cahersiveen Murder Suspect A 20-year-old man has appeared before Tralee District Court charged with the murder of Robert Elston in Cahersiveen on Wednesday morning. Blake Sweeney of Fertha Drive, Cahersiveen was remanded in custody for a week. 33-year-old Elston, a father of one from Lisselton, near Tarbert in north Kerry, died as he was being taken by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry in Tralee. He had been visiting his partner and young son in Cahersiveen when he became involved in a row at Fertha Drive in the early hours of the morning. He was stabbed during the

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that he will be donating half of his salary to charity. Mr Ramaphosa said the gesture was aimed at encouraging the wealthy to dedicate some of their pay to help build the nation. The donation of 1.8m rand (€124,000) will be managed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF). Mr Ramaphosa is one of South Africa’s richest men, with a fortune of around €383m. His critics often accuse him of being out of touch with the poor, and he was criticised for bidding around €1.7m for a buffalo and her calf in 2012. Mr Ramaphosa, 65, was a businessman before he became deputy president in 2012. He held a stake in sectors from telecoms and the media to beverages and fast food - he owned the South African franchise of

the US chain, McDonalds. His decision to take a pay cut has been met with mixed reactions in South Africa, reports the BBC’s Pumza Fihlani from the main city, Johannesburg. Some feel the donation is “peanuts” given his wealth, while others see it as a selfless move aimed at reintroducing a culture of public service in the governing African National Congress (ANC), she adds. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Mr Ramaphosa said he had decided to make the donation to the NMF in honour of South Africa’s first democratic president, Nelson Mandela. “This is a private, citizen-driven initiative that will ask all those with the means to contribute a small portion of their salaries to supporting the many small projects that build the nation,” Mr Ramaphosa said.

incident. Detective Sergeant John Kelly gave evidence of arresting, charging and cautioning Blake Sweeney. He said Mr Sweeney replied to the charge: “I am not guilty. This is self-defence.” Defence solicitor Pádraig O’Connell said his client was on prescribed medicine and was on disability, and he asked that he receive appropriate medical attention, including psychiatric assessment, while in custody. Judge David Waters remanded Mr Sweeney in custody for a week on the request of Superintendent Flor Murphy.

NFL Bans National Anthem Protests The NFL will require all players to “stand and show respect for the flag” during the national anthem before games - or else stay off the field until the song ends. The new policy was adopted Wednesday, the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, said in a statement. Players who refuse to stand for the anthem “may stay in the locker room or in a similar location off the field until after the anthem has been performed,” Goodell said. Goodell maintained that the wave of players kneeling in protest during the anthem, sparked in 2016 by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, created “awareness and action around issues of social justice that must be addressed.” However, Goodell added that “it was unfortunate that on-field protests created a false perception among many that thousands of NFL players were unpatriotic. This is not and was never the case.” The protests became a political lightning rod as politicians across the country weighed

in on the players’ actions. President Donald Trump repeatedly criticized the players who knelt, at times calling for the NFL to be punished. If players break the new rules, their teams will be fined, Goodell’s statement said. No specific dollar amount was provided in the statement, although the commissioner added that he “will impose appropriate discipline” on those who do not stand for the anthem. Kaepernick became a free agent in 2017 and went unsigned all last season. He is suing NFL teams, accusing them of colluding against him to keep him off the field.

Turkmens Warned Against Using Photos Of President As Toilet Paper The regional police in the western region of Balkan in Turkmenistan have allegedly instructed community policing officers to check toilets in public places and private houses, and to find evidence of people using newspapers with pictures of the country’s president as toilet paper. Officers have been told to look for the Turkmen leader’s “soiled” pictures at landfill sites, as well as among garbage at waste collection points. “There is a special janitor at each landfill site whose job is to inspect garbage, to look for soiled newspaper photos, to establish the house or flat of the newspaper subscriber and to report it to the police,” Fergana says. It adds that people found guilty of “damaging” the president’s image will be issued with a warning. But, according to the Alternativnnyy Novosti Turkmeni-

stana website, there are likely to be a huge number of issued warnings, as Turkmens - impoverished

from an ongoing economic crisis - do not tend to spend their money on toilet paper. “Why buy toilet papers if you have piles of newspapers which people in Turkmenistan are forced to subscribe to,” the report says. It adds that it is difficult not to soil the Turkmen leader’s photos because his pictures dominate all newspapers. The loo paper crackdown comes after several children were reportedly detained over damaging portraits of Mr Berdimuhamedov. US-funded Radio Azatlyk claims. It describes one such case where children dropped Mr Berdimuhamedov’s portrait and trampled on it while playing. In another instance, children were reportedly detained for adding a moustache and a beard to the picture of the country’s autocratic leader.

Review: Cathal Flaherty - The Head & Heart Local up and coming singer-songwriter Cathal Flaherty has been making considerable waves in the Irish music scene since the release of his debut single, A Thousand Years, last December. Two extremely well-received singles later and lots of airplay, both locally and nationally, Cathal is ready to introduce the world to The Head & Heart EP. Beginning in the best possible way with the latest single Grow, the EP picks up

pace with a double punch of pop/ rock goodness with All We Need and the ever so slightly Fleetwood Mac-sounding Your Best Friend. Things take an acoustic turn with the glorious Two Hearts before finishing with Cathal’s first single, A Thousand Miles. The Head And Heart EP is the sound of an artist of the highest possible calibre emerging onto the Irish music scene. Cathal is destined for great things.

Welcome

W

elcome to our May edition of Home and Living. It’s wonderful to see the sun shining. We’ve been waiting for it to make an appearance for a while now and it’s great to see it streaming in the windows of our homes (just have to clean them now!). We all crave more light and space. If you’re thinking about taking the plunge and extending, this month we are looking at extending your home, whether you need more space for a growing family or just looking for the light-filled family room that’s in every interiors magazine at the moment. We look at planning, whether or not to employ the services of an architect, and if it will add value to your home. If you have completed your extension and are looking for the perfect furniture or accessories, have a look at our notebook this week. A special thanks to interior designer Kadri Bormeister and the house owner for our amazing house this month. We are all in love with the dusky pink kitchen. If you’re expecting a new baby or if your babies are growing up and need a bedroom update, in next month’s Home and Living we’re looking at nurseries and bedrooms for children and teens.

House of 2018

T

he challenge was to make the building appear homely and inviting for a professional couple. This was achieved by using dark walnut flooring throughout the building. This helps to create unity. Each room has a different purpose and mood, therefore the chosen colour palette reflects that by varying the earthy colours from one area to the other. The rhythm of colour is brought to fabrics, other soft furnishings and rugs. The overall look is edgy, individual and oozes of character.

PLANNING ADVICE

FROM KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL

QUESTION I’m building an extension. Do I need planning permission? ANSWER SMALL-SCALE domestic extensions, including conservatories, do not require planning permission if the extension is to the rear of the house and complies with the following: • The original floor area of the house is not increased by more than 40sq m. Where the house has been extended before, the new and existing extension cannot exceed 40sq m in total • For terraced or semi-detached houses, the floor area of any extension above ground level does not exceed 12 square metres (including previous extensions) • Any extension above ground floor level is at least 2m from any boundary • Any extension does not exceed the height of the house • Any extension does not reduce the area of private open space, reserved for the occupants of the house, to less than 25sq m There are also rules about the height allowed in such an extension. These include: • If the rear wall of the house does not include a gable, the

height of the walls of the extension must not exceed the height of the rear wall of the house • If the rear wall has a gable, the walls of the extension shall not be higher than the sidewalls of the house • In the case of a flat roofed extension, the height of the highest part of the roof may not exceed the height of the eaves or parapet. There are also rules about the required distances between windows in extensions, the facing boundary of the adjoining property and the use of the roof of the extension. It is important to note that there are a number of instances where exemptions do not apply, i.e. planning permission will be required no matter how minor the development and Article 9 of the Planning & Development Regulations 2001 - 2015 identifies these instances. If you need guidance on building an extension and planning requirements you can contact Kerry County Council’s Planning Department on 066-7183582 http://www.housing.gov.ie/planning/leaflets/ planning-leaflets PL5 refers to domestic extensions.

THERE comes a tim e in most househo lds when you find yourself stu ck for space and ne eding that little bit extra to all eviate the squeeze. Maybe your growing family need s that tiny bit more space for a new arrival, toys or visiting friends. Or you are just craving the light-fill ed family room tha t seems to be the norm in all the house magazines at the moment. However, knowing wh at to do is not always that simple, and so we have loo ked at the pros and cons of both scenarios to help ans wer what is right for you. Extending your home is a cost-effective inv estment that will pay back itself when you decide to sell – but not always. If resale value is not an issue for you , you can do what you want wit hin reason, but if thi s is not the case you may need to look at the financial implications for the future should you decide to sell. For example, it may be a fantastic fou r-bedroom family ho me but if all the other houses are two-bedroom semis, will people be reluctant to invest money at a price wa y above the neighbours’ homes? That said, extending in some form or ano ther is often a more sensible app roach from a financial perspective. Building costs for an extension depend vastly on location, size and the type of build you wil l be planning. On top of that, you ma y be expected to pay around 10% of the building costs on fees for architect s, structural engineers, building regulation checks and planning permission if required. Equally, you may hav e to deal with extra costs if your kitchen is out of use , or if you must mo ve out during the period of the bu ild. While moving ho use can take a while to process, so too can extending you r property. Your home will tempo rarily become a build ing site until completion, which wil l most likely be stress ful, living in a building site is no fun but sometimes movin g out is not an option logistically or financially. Before building work even begins, you will need to seek planning permission . We have an article in this section with some of the reg ulations on planning for your extension. Moving has its own problems. Few house sales run smoothly, you will have to deal with viewings, the possibility of a sal e before you have fou nd your new dream home, being caught up in a chain, and maybe having to rent before you finally get to mo ve to your new home! The idea of all that packing is making me tired already, however , it does give you a gre at chance to declutter! So how can this decisio n be made easier, ma ke a list of what you love about your current home, the things you will miss or can’t do without, it may be the house itself or maybe the location , garden, privacy, tak e all this into account. Now make a second list of the things you don’t have that you want, be that mo re living space, a larger kitchen, an en-suite, playroom, a large garage. The final question is will you get all you need by extending! You don’t want an extens ion so huge or disproportionate or not in keeping wit h the original house that you can’t sell if you need to in future. The biggest tip I have after living through an ext ension, is an old one, my dad alw ays said measure tw ice, cut once! Plan everything, res earch as much as you can have a realistic image in you r head how your extens ion is going to look and what you are going to get from it space wise, get as much help as you can with this part, be it from an architect or trusted bu ilder, because once you start, it is more difficult or impo ssible to change your mind! And if you’re a “Mon ica”, then extending is definitely not for you, talk to your auc tioneer instead!

Beauty Buzz Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding Makeup Meghan Markle’s makeup at the royal wedding has been described by the beauty and lifestyle press as “refreshingly simple,” “chill-bride makeup,” and “natural beauty.” Her freckles were on full display, evident under a hint of blush and what looked to be the sheerest layer of foundation. Her eyeshadow was obvious but not overwhelming, with a slight smokey finish. It was all framed by a messy bun left that way purposely by celebrity hairstylist Serge Normant. It was Meghan, only better. Her natural beauty was enhanced but not exaggerated. Despite the seeming simplicity of Meghan’s makeup, it might be poised to have a radical effect on beauty trends. In the makeup world right now, the two most popular trends fall on opposite and extreme ends of an aesthetic continuum. On one end, you have what is known in Instagram makeup vernacular as “glam.” On the other, there is

“no-makeup makeup.” Meghan’s came down clearly on the “no-makeup makeup” side. It’s a big deal that she made such a statement publicly because the beauty world is at a tipping point, with the push and pull of more versus less makeup bubbling up in pop culture. Meghan’s longtime friend and makeup artist Daniel Martin flew to the UK to do her makeup for the wedding. Martin is a Dior beauty brand ambassador and color consultant for Honest Beauty (the brand owned by Jessica Alba). Products for Meghan’s now-royal glow, we will probably never know exactly what products were used on her big day. Brands are exceptionally careful about claiming royals as users out of fear that they’ll be dropped for their indiscretion. Dior, Martin’s sponsor, did send out a product breakdown “inspired by” the new Duchess of Sussex’s wedding look, but wouldn’t confirm if she had actually used any of them.

Did You Love Priyanka Chopra’s Royal Wedding Makeup? Priyanka Chopra had celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff, who worked with Chanel beauty, to create the Purple Reign-inspired look. Pati Dubroff posted her mood board for the wedding makeup look on Instagram that featured both Prince and Rihanna, since Chopra wore a lavender Vivienne Westwood suit to the ceremony.

The Weather Is Glorious… Garden Magic Where Do You Start? Words: Debby Looney

When the weather is glorious, where do you start? Unfortunately for me, it’s usually with washing the windows! However, beyond that, the garden beckons... Do you start with weeding, edging, mowing? Well, I would say, colour. We have had enough grey and now is the time for fun! Starting in the borders, perennials are all showing signs of life. Don’t worry if they seem slow, those in garden centres are generally cultivated in protective environments and are way ahead of their counterparts in the garden. Hardy osteospermums, campanulas, geraniums and aquilegias will all be showing colour. Invest now in lupins, penstemon, aconites and delphiniums, so they can really have a long growing season and give you months of colour. In the coming weeks I will focus on different perennial plants, as they are the stars of summer. Many people ask about pots and hanging baskets. The most common question is a short one: how do I get my pots looking great? The answer can be equally short: less is more! Don’t overcrowd, and don’t overfeed! Let me explain... A pot which has a twelve-inch diameter should have no more than three patio plants in it. For example, a geranium, dahlia and mini petunia. Or else six bedding plants, one in the middle and five around the edge. Or a combination of the two. Overcrowding leads to

competition for space and you will find one or two strong plants come out of a mess of stunted or lanky ones! The second part of my advice is to use slow release fertiliser according to the instructions on the packet. Alternatively, feed your pots with an all-purpose feed such as phostrogen or Miracle Gro, as opposed to tomato feed which just forces flowers at the cost of all else. A healthy plant looks much better than a forced one. The perfect hanging basket is easy to create if you follow a few simple guidelines. Using plastic or rattan type baskets will prevent them drying out very fast, and they are easier to manage. If you have wire baskets, I recommend coco liners. Always use a round piece of polythene (I usually cut a circle from the compost bag and use that) between liner and compost. You need not bother putting drainage holes in it - this way you prevent dripping when you water. Baskets dry out so quickly as they’re open to all the elements such as sun and wind, but they rarely get rain... For this reason, using water retentive gel is helpful, but only to a certain extent. Diligent watering and feeding is key. Baskets contain so little compost yet support so many plants that feeding is vital. Slow release fertiliser breaks down through dampness, however baskets dry out so often that it frequently does not get the chance to work properly.

Alonso: Crazy Monaco GP Can Level Playing Field Fernando Alonso says he is preparing for a “crazy” Monaco GP and believes the iconic street circuit will act as a performance leveller to leave the race “like throwing a dice”. Alonso has won twice around Monaco’s twists and turns and is making his return to the race after missing the 2017 edition in order to compete in the Indy 500. McLaren have underwhelmed in F1 2018 after switching from Honda to Renault power, but Alonso has finished in the points in every race so far and is seventh in the Drivers’ Championship. The Spaniard thinks Monaco’s unique characteristics can enable McLaren to be in a good position to challenge. McLaren suffered a double retirement in Monaco in 2017 but it was the scene of their joint-best result during their failed Honda partnership when Alonso finished fifth in 2016. The former world champions were encouraged by the improved performance their Spanish GP upgrades made and straight-line speed is less critical in Monte Carlo.

WRC Rally Portugal: Meeke Apologises To Citroen For Saturday Crash

Kris Meeke has apologised to his Citroen World Rally Championship team for the Rally Portugal crash that destroyed his C3. The Northern Irishman went off the road on Saturday morning’s first run at the Amarante stage. Meeke (who was taken to hospital and later released af-

ter precautionary checks) and Nagle were fortunate to escape what was a frightening crash into the trees. Having led the rally early on, Meeke and Nagle were running seventh at the time of the accident after picking up two punctures in as many stages on Friday afternoon which forced them to run the two legs of the Porto street stage without a left-rear tyre. Despite the shunt, Meeke said he was happy with the speed and feeling he had in the C3 compared with the car’s performance in Portugal last year. Team principal Pierre Budar said: “Obviously, it’s disappointing for us to see Kris and Paul go off the road, but we are above all relieved that they have escaped more or less unscathed.” Fellow Irishman Craig Breen also suffered a puncture on Friday and finished seventh overall. Meeke and Breen are eighth and tenth respectively, but Breen had to sit out two events to made room for Sebastian Loeb’s return. Overall winner of the event Thierry Neuville took the lead in the championship when Sebastian Ogier crashed out of the event on Friday.

Ferrari Reveals One-Off SP38 Ferrari has released pictures of its new SP38, a one-off creation based on its current 488 GTB supercar. Claimed to have taken the Italian car-maker’s Special Projects division 18 months to develop, the special 488-based SP38 has reportedly been reclothed in a skin that pays tribute to the F40’s louvred rear clamshell while at the front, borrows from the mid-1970s 308 GTB. Ferrari hasn’t confirmed what engine powers the oneoff customer commission, nor released any pics of the SP38’s interior, which is also said to be bespoke. That

will be revealed, along with the rest of the car, later this week at Concorso d’Eleganza d’Este. The Special Projects SP38 follows on from the 2016 458 MM inspired by the 1984 288 GTO and the SP12 that was commissioned from rocker and Ferrari fan, Eric Clapton. All have been rumoured to have cost their wealthy owners in excess of €2.3 million.

Rathmore School Does The Treble Rathmore has become a hotbed for basketball as Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra boys and girls brought home three All-Ireland ‘A’ titles this year. The U-16 boys claimed the first title and this team has enjoyed tremendous success in recent times, winning the first and second year ‘A’ titles in previous years to make it three in a row. The first year girls created their own bit of history as they bridged a 29-year gap since the school won a girls title and they also became the first Rathmore girls team to win an ‘A’ basketball title. The second year boys won the Junior ‘A’ All-Ire-

land and they were the first team to retain a title in the school. This is the fifth All-Ireland ‘A’ title that Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra has won in the past three years. The hard work undertaken at juvenile level by Rathmore Ravens and Gneeveguilla basketball clubs have contributed largely to the success. Denis Kerins, Principal of Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, said that it is a fantastic achievement for the school and praised the hard work that the players and coaches have put in to make it possible.

Managing Exam Stress Stress is a perfectly normal physiological response when undertaking a major exam. When managed properly it enables students to perform very well in exams; however, when stress levels get out of control and students feel overwhelmed it causes huge anxiety. By managing exam stress effectively you give yourself a chance to perform to the best of your ability and see the benefits of your hard work. In order to cope well with exam stress, keep the following tips in mind. Access your support network: Lean on those around you for support. Talk to parents, siblings, extended family members and friends. Emotional support and encouragement is important in times of high stress levels. Try to be open to accepting it. Stay connected with school friends. At this stage many exam students are opting to study at home and while this can be a very productive use of your time, it can also be isolating. Make sure that you find time in your day to connect with others. This will help to reduce stress levels. Exercise and fresh air: Nothing clears the head better than getting out in the fresh air. It will help to regain your focus if you find it difficult to concentrate at the end of months of study. Exercise is a critical part of stress reduction. Students who take some time to have a brisk walk or run, a session in the gym or a swim will feel the immediate benefits of endorphins produced, which

help to reduce stress and anxiety. They also aid relaxation and overall well-being. Keep to a balanced routine: Make sure that you maintain a balance between study and proper rest. Avoid studying too late at night and make sure to do something to switch off for at least an hour before you go to bed. Eat regular, healthy meals and drink plenty of water. Build in some short breaks to do something that you like. Limit your use of social media: It is very easy to become totally distracted by social media apps whey trying to study. Best to avoid them altogether until you have finished study. It is also important not to get drawn into all of the exam hype that features on social media around exam time. Meditation and relaxing therapies: Mindfulness, breathing exercises and meditation all help the body to unwind and the mind to relax and refocus. Download an app such as Headspace on your phone and use it in the run up to the exams, particularly if you are having difficulty sleeping. Complementary therapies with trained practitioners such as reflexology, aromatherapy, massage and reiki can all help to reduce stress levels. Keep things in perspective: You are almost at the end of this tough journey and once you get over the final hurdle of the exams, you will get to enjoy a study-free summer and look forward to the exciting next chapter.

Excellent employment opportunities are available in Kerry for the 12 participants who received their HACCP Level 2 certificates at a ceremony in Killarney last week. The group undertook the training through the Local Employment Service operated in the region by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG with the funding being provided by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. Speaking at the presentation, Maurice Lawlor of the DEASP said that the catering and hospitality sector was very important to Kerry. The HACCP qualification the participants received would enable them to work in the sector or indeed to develop other opportunities to advance

themselves which the LES would continue to support, he said. Mr. Lawlor added that the DEASP supports many schemes through the LES and they look forward to continuing to do so in the future. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane pointed to the importance of having a HACCP certification with regard to securing employment in the hospitality and catering sectors. He said he hoped the certification they had achieved through doing the course will bring them significant benefits in their careers going forward. LES Manager Bridie Buckley congratulated all those who successfully completed the course and pledged to continue to support them in the development of their careers as required.

Kevin Scoops Top Prize In Fantasy Football League

Soccer expert Kevin McCarthy walked away with a €250 voucher for Brian James after seeing off all comers in the 2017/18 Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Football League. It was a gruelling ninemonth campaign but Kevin finished first out of 383 competitors to eventually claim the top prize. Incredibly, the Fossa man led the pack from December and was relentless in his pursuit of the top spot; his lowest score in the second half of the season was 40 and he averaged an incredible 63 points over the same period. His dominance is reflected in the 66-point gap between himself and Patrick Collins in second place. Tony Looney finished third and Kerry star Shane Enright outscored everyone else in the top ten in the final gameweek to secure a fourth place finish. Damien Ruigrok came fifth. Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Kevin re-

vealed that he was relieved in the end because he thought Patrick Collins was going to catch him. Adam Moynihan congratulated Kevin on his victory,

saying that leading for so long was no mean feat. “There’s a lot of graft in fantasy football if you want to be good at it,” he said. “You have to be committed to it from start to finish - if you miss a couple of weeks you’re goosed. Fair play to Kevin, he led from around Christmas I think. I was in contention myself for a while and I was hoping he’d bottle it, but I ended up finishing 90th. I refuse to accept any responsibility for the team’s demise. Just like last year, my players let me down big time.” Adam also expressed his gratitude to tournament sponsors Brian James who presented vouchers to each Manager of the Month, third overall, second overall and, of course, the grand prize of a €250 voucher to overall winner, Kevin. Shane Lynch was named Hardest Working Manager for the second consecutive season. There is no prize for this award.

It was widely expected for the past few weeks but now it’s official: Dingle Bay Rovers will face Killarney Celtic in the 2017/18 Premier A league final. Dingle confirmed their spot in the decider thanks to a comfortable victory over Fenit Samphires last Sunday, goals from Paudie Quinn (two), Shane Houlihan and Seán Fitzgerald propelling the men from the west to a 4-1 win. They’re currently two points ahead of reigning champions Killarney Athletic who have now fulfilled all of their fixtures. It will be a repeat of the 2016 final when Dingle came out on top but recent meetings have been more fruitful for the Celts: they have defeated Dingle 7-0 and 7-1 already this season. Eoghan Donnellan’s men will rightly be favourites to claim

their first title since 2013 but Dingle are a good team and I’m sure they’ll have all of their players available and ready to go for the final. Their victory over Fenit meant our game against Tralee Dynamos was irrelevant, at the top end of the table at least. Lukasz Polak (two), Will Courtney and Shane Lynch helped us to a 4-1 win and Dynamos are now under serious pressure to stay in the division. They’ll need at least a draw against Celtic in their final game to have any hope of staying up. They’re currently a point behind third from bottom Mastergeeha and Geeha have three games left. Seven teams have won the Kerry league in the past ten years. If Dynamos do go down, only four will remain (Park were demoted and Lisselton are

no more). In the Greyhound Bar KO Cup, Celtic defeated Tralee Celtic last Friday night to advance to the semi-final. They’ll play Mitchels Avenue on Sunday in Mounthawk Park with a place in the final up for grabs. On the other side of the draw, we’re playing Castleisland in the quarters on Friday night in Castleisland. The winners will face Killorglin in the last four. Things haven’t gone as well as we hoped this season but there’s still time to salvage something. Down in Division 1A, Cedar Galaxy can confirm their promotion and a place in the league final with victory over Atletico Ardfert in their last game of the season on Sunday. If leaders QPR beat third place Ballyheigue, both QPR and Cedar will be playing Premier B football next season.

Around The World

“I Don’t Mind If Liverpool Win But Please, Not Another Istanbul” Words: Adam Moynihan

I remember being a bit torn watching the Champions League final in 2005. Firstly, I’ve always been fond of AC Milan. There wasn’t that much soccer on Irish TV when I was a young fella in the early 90s but RTÉ had Football Italia and I used to watch it religiously. Milan won three titles in a row between ‘92 and ’94 as well as the Champions League with players like Marcel Desailly, Zvonomir Boban and Dejan Savićević. I actually had an AC Milan shirt before I had an Aston Villa shirt (I think it was just a generic red and black striped O’Neills jersey but, to be fair to my parents, it would have been hard to source official AC Milan merchandise in Killarney back in 1993) I wouldn’t claim to be a Rossoneri diehard these days but I still had a soft spot for them back in 2005. I certainly can’t say that I felt that way about Liverpool. I know they’re a big club but in my lifetime Liverpool have always been unsuccessful, so I don’t get this

sense of entitlement that some supporters seem to have. Fair enough, they used to be good but they haven’t won the league in 28 years. There has to be a time limit on these things. Villa were good between 1893 and 1900 but you don’t hear me going on about it. Looking back at their line-up in 2005, it’s actually incredible how mediocre Rafael Benítez’s Liverpool were. Dudek, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypiä, Traoré, Luis García, Xabi Alonso, Gerrard, Riise, Kewell and Baroš (Šmicer, Hamann and Cissé came off the bench). Milan, led by legends like Maldini, Pirlo and Kaká, were a million miles better on paper. And as much as I didn’t want Liverpool to win, you always have a soft spot for the underdog. As the comeback unfolded, I was even more conflicted. On one hand you’re thinking, “this is unbelievable”. On the other hand you’re thinking, “we are never going to hear the end of this”. And we haven’t. To

be fair, if my team did what Liverpool did in Istanbul, I’d never shut up about it either. This weekend, I’m not quite as torn. I wouldn’t be a big fan of Real Madrid as a club (I lived in Catalonia for a semester when I was in college and I’m still very much on my high horse about it) so I’d be happy enough to see them lose. It’d be better for the tournament if someone else won it anyway. I also quite like this Liverpool team. Salah is obviously out of this world, Mané and Firmino are great to watch, James Milner is a legend and Robertson and Van Dijk are ballers. They play an exciting brand of football and although Klopp is a bit much at times, at least he’s good value. So if the Reds do lift the trophy on Saturday night, I’ll be happy enough for my Liverpool-supporting friends. But please, no crazy comebacks this time. I don’t want to be hearing about “Kiev” for the rest of my life.

not the most humble man in the world. When Steve Bruce brought Terry to the club last July I wasn’t exactly over the moon. There was no doubting his pedigree - he is arguably the most accomplished English centre half of all time – but was he over the hill? He hardly played for Chelsea in the 2016/17 season. And did Villa need a character like Terry at the club? For some, dropping down a division

No. 26 from star striker Jonathan Kodjia. (Ostensibly, these were given to him by the club but I’d be shocked if they weren’t part of his contract demands.) But it didn’t take long for the controversial former England captain to endear himself to the Holte End. His performances in claret and blue have been nothing short of excellent and he was undoubtedly one of the key figures as Villa secured a spot in the play-offs. He quickly formed a formidable partnership in central defence alongside Welshman James Chester and with on-loan Manchester United keeper Sam Johnstone and much-maligned full back Alan Hutton also finding their feet, Villa’s rear-guard has become one of the most intimidating in the division. When he signed, Terry said he decided to join a Championship club because he wasn’t willing to play against Chelsea. Things must be going well for him in Birmingham, however, as he recently confirmed that he’ll stay at Villa if they manage to secure promotion to the Premier League. He hasn’t been there too long but if the captain can lead his side to victory in Wembley tomorrow evening, he’ll go down in the history books as a verified Villa legend.

Terry Could Be Villa’s Captain, Leader, Legend

Words: Adam Moynihan

There are basically two schools of thought when it comes to John Terry: you either hate him with a passion, or you’re a Chelsea fan. Or at least that’s how it used to be. Last summer, the then 36-year-old left his boyhood club to join Championship side and serial underachievers Aston Villa. As a staunch Villa fan and a staunch JT hater, I found myself in a bit of a predicament. I despised Terry at Chelsea. How could I not? He racially abused an opponent, he (allegedly) cheated on his wife with a teammate’s ex, he suddenly appeared in full kit to celebrate a Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich (despite being suspended for the final), and he got subbed off in the 26th minute (his squad number) to get an ovation in his last game at Stamford Bridge. That’s an abridged version of his chequered history but it’s enough. Long story short, he’s

might induce a bit of humility. Terry’s first acts as an Aston Villa player were taking the captaincy from James Chester and taking

The Caseys Of Sneem Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald

As you enter Sneem from Killarney you are met with the imposing lifesize monument erected in memory of Steve Casey, a world champion from a family of champions. Weeshie Fogarty did a fine Terrace Talk programme on Steve and on his six other brothers, also world champions. Thirty years ago this summer, the Sneem Regatta in Kerry hosted a final reunion on home water of what was arguably the greatest Irish sporting family of all time. They were called the Casey brothers. There were seven of them in total: Steve, Paddy, Jack, Jim, Mick, Tom and Dan. And to suggest they were Ireland’s greatest sporting siblings may, if anything, be an understatement. They were also once dubbed, not without justification, “the toughest family on earth”. Sheer size was one of their main attributes, and it was hereditary on both sides. Their father was Big Mick Casey, a bare-knuckle boxer who in his youth had sparred with John L Sullivan. Their mother was Brigid Sullivan, from a family known around Sneem as The Mountains. But the seven sons had finesse as well as physique. The 1983 reunion (of the five who could still travel) was in a rowing boat, the stage on which they most excelled as a group. They were among the greatest oarsmen of their generation, although that sport was also the source of their greatest disappointment. As a collective, they also excelled in tug-of-war. But it was in the individual discipline of wrestling, perhaps, that they reached their highest level. And the brother who scaled the final summit was Steve, or as he was known in a sport where nicknames were obligatory, Crusher Casey. For several years from the late 1930s, Steve Casey – 6’4” and 17 stone – held the most authentic version of the world heavyweight wrestling championship, thanks partly to his trademark move, the

Killarney Flip. Among his rivals, incidentally, was a fellow countryman Danno O’Mahoney whose signature was the Irish Whip. Their first meeting was a draw. But, in a rematch-to-the-finish, the Flip outmanoeuvred the Whip after an epic 18 rounds and 97 minutes. Not content with wrestling supremacy, however, Casey was also a formidable boxer. He beat the US champion, then challenged Joe Louis for the world title. When Louis didn’t pick up the gauntlet, the New York Post taunted: “Even the greatest run scared of the Sneem Machine”. Crusher was not the only Casey to excel at wrestling. His younger brother Paddy was a three-time All-Ireland champion and probably destined for greater things when he broke his back during a bout in 1938. He won that fight anyway, but the injury curtailed

further ambitions and he was better known in later years for operating a string of Irish clubs in London: the Glocamorra, the Shamrock, and the Inisfree. Another Casey, Mick, fought 200 wrestling bouts, despite being the only brother never to leave Sneem. But back to rowing, the sport in which the family first established their legend in the early 1930s. A measure of their collective talents was when five of them combined to win the Lakes of Killarney Salters Cup, in perpetuity, somewhat to the chagrin of the organisers. The rule was that if you won three years running, the trophy was yours. After they triumphed in 1930 and 1931, however, there was no 1932 competition. So when they won again in 1933, they were first told that the victories had to be consecutive. Not surprisingly, the brothers won the argument and kept the cup, despite the organisers offering £60 to buy it back.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

Last weekend Munster bowed out of the Pro14 at the hands of newly-crowned European Champions and fiercest rivals, Leinster. In playing conditions reminiscent of the Bordeaux match and the south of France weather, the RDS was a cauldron as red and blue flags battled before the teams even came out to the pitch. It was bitterly disappointing to witness Munster bow out at another semi-final stage but in the end Leinster’s class shone through. Leinster were missing enough of their big guns to give Munster a decent chance but the Blues’ youngsters really stepped up to win by a solitary point in the end. As is becoming the norm on social media these days, the referee was the target of many a fans ire, but a team which gives away seven penalties in the second half alone can hardly expect to win. Munster’s handling and passing again let them down when it mattered most and knockons hurt them. The referee should have given Tadgh Furlong a yellow early in the game and some fans will be rightly angered at the ref’s per-

Munster Bow Out To Classy Rivals Leinster formance. However, Leinster were on fire and the tough matches of the previous few weeks stood to them. It has to be said that Leinster will have their work cut out for them next weekend as they take on Scarlets in the final of the Pro14 at the Aviva

Stadium. This should be a mouth-watering tie and it will be interesting to see if Leinster can follow up European Cup success and complete the double. All in all, another good weekend for Irish Rugby, even if the mighty men in red came up short.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

Post the recent Munster Lake competition held in Killarney, we now expect that four of our club anglers will qualify for the ITFFA National Competition, which again is a great achievement for both the club and the members involved. We were unlucky in the Munster river competition held in Macroom last Sunday, where our club angler, Tim Corbett, missed out on qualification. Following on from some recent freedom of information requests by FISSTA with regard to The Salmon Conservation fund (made up of a portion of every salmon rod licence sold) some interesting figures have emerged. The Total collected for this fund since its inception to the 31st December 2017 is €6,301,083. The monies have either been spent on salmon conservation projects or held in trust by IFI for future projects. The closing balance in the fund as of 31st December last year was E3,156,225. One to watch going forward as it will be interesting if the valuable funding will be put towards worthwhile projects.

settle which afforded a strong and physical Laune Rangers outfit to put 1-3 on the board without reply for the Crokes girls. We eventually settled down and got to grips with the home team. A pointed free from Niamh Stack got the crokes onto the scoreboard followed by a fine point from birthday girl Ava Sheahan. Goals followed from Sarah McMahon and Jade Potts and another free from Niamh Stack meant we went in at half time only 4 down. 1-10 to 2-3. Crokes girls started the second half much better and a fine goal from Ava Sheahan followed by points from Treasa o Sullivan Niamh Stack Jade Potts put us ahead after 10 minutes in the second half. Laune Rangers were not to lie down tho and a couple of points kept them level going into the last 10 minutes. 3 fantastic saves by our u14 keeper Faith Lockett kept Crokes in the game along with Caoilinn o Donoghue and Holly Power Megan Graham but Rangers older and stronger team eventually pulled ahead with only a few minutes left. We pulled two points back from Jess Leahy and sub Kelly o Sullivan. Overall a very good performance against a team who have 5 players on the Kerry u16 panel. UNDER 14 GIRLS DIVISION 3 COUNTY LEAGUE: Despite solid displays from Niamh O Donoghue,Selina and Amy Clifford our U 14 girls come up short in their first two outings in division 3 of their county league. However, they got off the blocks with a win over Laune Rangers recently. Even though the teams forward line were getting good possession throughout the first half they were finding it difficult to clock up the scores. As much and all as things were going their way, if it were not for some brave defending from Amy Leahy towards the end of the game and a number of great clearances from Faith Lockett in goals, they might not have had the 4 point winning margin at the end.

Fossa GAA

MINORS: Our minors recorded a fantastic win over Glenflesk on Friday evening in the Div 3 County League final played in brilliant sunshine in Kilcummin. Glenflesk opened the scoring but an Emmett O’Shea free leveled matters, Glenflesk looked dangerous early on but Fossa stuck to the task and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Glenflesk held the lead till midway in the half before a brilliant left footed effort from Emmett O’Shea gave Fossa the lead, from there on three superb long distance frees from the same player left Fossa leading at the break, 0-08 to 0-07. The second half started with a bang, Ryan Sheehan scored a cracking goal inside two minutes of the start to set Fossa rolling. This was quickly followed by a Killian Buckley point, Glenflesk pulled a goal back in the 4th minute and it was game on. Fossa really drove at their opponents and replied with scores from Killian Buckley and Ruari Doyle, in the 8th minute Cian O’Shea scored Fossa’s second goal to give them a six point lead. It was a rip roaring contest at this stage with both sides kicking some great scores, Eoin Talbot and Ryan Sheehan kicked two excellent points, Glenflesk scored a goal in the 21st minute to reduce the deficit to two. Fossa replied with a point and then supersub, William O’Brien volleyed home a brilliant goal in the 25th minute to set Fossa on the road to victory. Glenflesk tried hard and scored three more points but a brace of left footed points from Emmett O’Shea left Fossa winners on a score of 3-17 to 2-14.

Killarney Legion

EAST KERRY U16: Killarney Legion 1-17 Firies 2-11. A hard fought win for the u16’s against a dogged Firies side in this East Kerry semi-final.A flying start by the Legion saw them race into a 5 pt.lead

Sport

and it looked like they would pull away to a comfortable win. Firies settled to their task and promptly hit 1-2 to show that they were well in contention. This spurred the green and whites to up their game with an identical 1-2 of their own but once again Firies replied and by the break trailed by just a goal. Amazingly the second period was a mirror image of the first with the Legion jumping into a healthy lead and with Firies rallying again with another goal and flurry of points. However the Legion managed their game plan well and were worthy winners by a goal at the close of business to qualify for the final where they meet Kenmare Shamrocks. U12 GIRLS: An away game to St.Mary’s Cahirciveen saw the u12 girls return home after a fine win.
