Full costs of Killarney Safe Streets project revealed
The Killarney Safe Streets programme cost a staggering €149,478.76 to put in place new figures seen by the Killarney Advertiser can reveal. | By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council spent a total of €238,324.10 on the Safe Streets project across its five municipal districts. However, all of this money came from National Transport Authority grants and was not taken from the Council’s annual budget. The average cost between the other four districts of Kenmare, Castleisland/ Corca Dhuibhne, Listowel and Tralee was a modest €22,211 per region but the Killarney project cost in excess of €125,000 more than any other municipal district in the county. Rolled out in July, the Safe Streets plan was designed to allow social distancing on the county’s streets and to allow businesses reopen after months of pandemic related closures. The Killarney project included the widening of several town centre footpaths, at an estimated cost of 50 parking spaces and the full-time pedestrianisation of
Three questions for Kerry County Council: KA: Why did Killarney cost significantly more than other towns? KCC: “The National Transport Authority has provided grant assistance to Kerry County Council in implementing these mobility plans which covers the full cost of expenditure incurred to date. A total of €238,324 has been expended throughout the county on mobility plans to date as discussed at the meeting of Kerry County Council on Wednesday. Those costs vary across the Municipal Districts and the county’s towns based on numerous factors which were assessed during the process, for example, footfall, width of existing footpaths and streetscapes etc.” KA: Based on the logic of Safe
Plunkett St and a portion of Kenmare Place. Although elected in the Castleisland/ Corca Dhuibhne Area Municipal District Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae questioned the level of spending in Killarney at Wednesday’s Kerry County Council meeting. “I am not knocking the merits of the plan and its merits is to keep people safe,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “But if the works in Killarney are temporary why is everything so permanent compared to other towns. If the changes are tempo-
rary it will mean bringing in a machine ripping up the footpaths and that seems like an awful waste of money.” A Council spokesperson told the meeting: “The Town Centre Mobility Plans for Kerry were implemented as emergency measures in response to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and have taken into account the need to maintain social distancing and other controls while businesses reopened in towns across the county.”
Streets, are you more likely to contract COVID-19 in Killarney than any other town? Or, on the same logic, why was Killarney offered better protection than other towns? KCC: “This is not a question of different protection for different towns – every town and village in Kerry has different requirements which were assessed during the implementation of safety measures.” KA: If this is only a temporary measure, how much is it going to cost to reinstate the streets to their former condition? KCC: “The Mobility Plans will be kept under review and it may be necessary to expand or extend these plans as society continues to deal with the pandemic over the coming months.”
Disappointment as Ronan's op cancelled again | By Michelle Crean Yesterday (Thursday) should have been the day that changed teenager Ronan Foley's life for the better - but there was huge disappointment as his spinal operation was cancelled at the last hour for a second time in six months. The 14-year-old's condition has deteriorated so badly in the last two-and-a-half years that his spine is at a 90 degree curvature. Ronan from Killorglin, is a former St Oliver's pupil and currently attends St Francis Special School. The operation - when it eventually goes ahead - will be life-changing for him freeing him of the daily pain which is so debilitating that he can barely sit up for more 30 minutes at a time to eat. He
spends most of his days lying on the bed or on the floor to try to get comfortable. His family, who say Ronan is waiting too long, went public to have his operation made a priority and were relieved to finally get the go ahead. However, following a consultation in Dublin last week, Ronan's family received the devastating call that his operation has yet again been put on the long finger due to a small procedure that he has to undergo first. His father Tony says it's understandable that the procedure must go ahead before the operation can take place as "a risk is a risk" but said it could have been taken care of during all the months of waiting. "We were so close," Tony told the Killarney Advertiser. "We knew he had to have this minor procedure but were told it could be taken care of after his surgery. However, the anaesthetist last week said he wants a little procedure done first
as a risk is a risk, and we're in absolute one hundred percent agreement with him. But why did they leave it until the last hour? We are disappointed that this wasn't done in the months while he was waiting. It's after compromising his day of surgery. We don't know where we are now and it could be four to five months before he has the operation. It's Ronan we're thinking about." Tony said that many emergency procedures went ahead of Ronan over the last few years but with the youngster's condition so bad now he should be priority for surgery. "We're hoping that he'll have the minor procedure by late October and his operation by November. He has to be close enough to an emergency procedure by now. He really just wants to be pain free and every day after the operation he'll have his life back."

'Let's help Alexis' fund launched A new charitable trust has been set up this week to support a four-year-old Killarney girl who suffers from a rare condition. | By Michelle Crean A committee of five have launched the 'Let's help Alexis' fund online including a GoFundMe page which has so far raised almost €4,000 of their €50k goal to give Alexis a comfortable life as she grows older. Currently her parents Steve and Teresa are 24 hour carers for the little girl who has a rare primary metabolic condition called Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Deficiency which has led to a brain abnormality called Ventriculomegaly as well as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, global developmental delay, double hip displacement, cortical visual impairment and sleeping difficulties. Some immediate supports include upgrading their small Seat Leon to a wheelchair accessible vehicle as she has outgrown her car seat making it difficult and uncomfortable for her on long journeys to Dublin for necessary appointments. The committee is made up of five people
who are not related to Alexis' parents and will make all the financial decisions independently of both Steve and Teresa to prioritise Alexis' needs. "A few people suggested to us a few years ago to set it up," Steve told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "The committee are planning a number of fundraisers and have set up the fundraising page. I'm delighted that it's independent of us. It's about what is in the best interest of Alexis and the committee will decide. We're very grateful to them for giving up their time." He explained that Alexis is now almost 15kgs and has outgrown her car seat and that as their car is compact it's a struggle to fit everything they need for the long trips to appointments in Dublin. "She is getting big now and her car seat is too small. She has been sanctioned for a wheelchair but it won't be suitable for our car. She needs a van with a ramp for the wheelchair. Before you could stop

and lift her out but it's harder now. Even stopping on the long trips she's now too heavy for the nappy changer when we take a break in places like Obama's and then there's health and safety - especially now. With a van we'd have the space for everything. She's on a special Ketogenic diet and food for 24 hours has to be made up the night before and brought with us. And then there's the medicine bags and change of clothes." Funds raised would also go towards extra physio for her, he added. "She's getting private and public physio but it would mean we can pay for more private sessions. We're also looking into therapeutic horse riding." And with the physio, which is done at
home, comes an increase in the cost of heating oil which is double what most people spend, he added. "The trust will mean that Alexis will have everything she needs as she grows older. We just want to give her the best chance possible, not just for now but for the years ahead." He added that messages of support from all over have been pouring in since the committee launched the trust. "You see the good in people. It lifts your spirits and it just shows that everybody in society is equal." To make a donation to help the family go to GoFundMe: Let's Help Alexis and you can also search the same name on Facebook to find out more.

Killarney men experience one of California's worst fires DEVASTATING: Kieran Guerin says the fires are so devastating that he has witnessed a friend lose his house.
| By Michelle Crean As one of the largest blazes in California's history rages on, two Killarney locals tell the Killarney Advertiser this week just how bad the situation is. Kieran Guerin from Gortroe moved to San Francisco in 2003 and then on to Napa in 2011, and says the fires are so devastating that he has witnessed a friend lose his house. Tony Lynch, originally from Countess Grove, lives about an hour's drive from the worst affected areas but says that they are not immune to its affects as heavy smoke is continuously in the air. The fires are so dangerous that smoke has even travelled 5,000 miles to Europe and experts say California is experiencing
its worst fire year since the Great Fire of 1910 tore through more than three million acres. It first ignited on September 4 burning through 286,519 acres to date, destroying one hundred structures with another 6,723 under threat. Authorities say that only 32 percent of the fire is contained so far. "This year's fires steadily grew and honestly most of them are still going with over 18,000 firemen battling the blaze now," Kieran said. "So far 15 people have died. This one is still about 25 miles north of me. As we speak there is zero chance of rain, so we have at least six more weeks of fire season ahead of us, while all the time hoping that it doesn't come back our way. About a month ago my girlfriend went from voluntary evacuation to mandatory so had to drive alongside the freeway watching the fires burning either side as we drove away. Packing up a house and picking what is essential to take and leave is not an easy thing to

do. How do you decide what is and isn't important in a situation where your life may be in danger? My neighbour was out at our friend’s winery as they tried to save as much as they could yet the fires burnt it to the ground after they had gotten out." Just last week the skies were almost pitch black at midday which was "quite freaky", he added. "When it subsided, it turned to a dark orange sky which was like the apocalypse we've all seen in every doomsday movie ever made. As my late mom's saying goes "go mbeirimíd beo ar an am seo arís"." Grove who lives and works as a teacher in CA, they too are suffering very poor air quality. “We would wake up in the morning to a car covered in ash and could smell the burning as if there was a camp fire nearby, but the nearest fires were at least an hour’s drive away. Many people experienced breathing issues due to the smoke and with COVID being a respiratory virus, it made some even more anxious.”

Staff donate €2k to cancer charity
| By Michelle Crean It was a tasty treat for diners - but a fundraising event proved more than tantalizing for one local charity - as they received over €2,000 in funds this week. DONATION: Teachers Stephanie Horan and Aoife Finnerty pictured with students Ellen Farradon, Aimee Rose Myers, Emma Myers, Rebecca Kenny, Sarah McGrath, Clodagh Carroll and Bailey Carlton who raised funds for St Vincent de Paul from their sleepout in February.
Students give donation to St Vincent de Paul Kind-hearted students from one local school handed over €1,270 in funds to charity this week. | By Michelle Crean Last February, the TY class of 2019/2020 from St Brigid’s, under the direction of their teachers Stephanie Horan and Aoife Finnerty, took part in a sleep out for St Vincent de Paul. However, due to the lockdown which saw schools closed suddenly last March the students including Ellen Farradon, Aimee Rose Myers, Emma Myers, Rebecca Kenny, Sarah McGrath, Clodagh Carroll, Bailey Carlton, Caitlin Cronin, Laura Buckley, Melissa Carroll, Caitlin O'Connell, Michelle Hickey, Meabh O'Connell, Julia Walshe and Mehek Si-
monova, only got a chance to give the funding this week. "The students organised a sponsored sleep out to raise awareness of homelessness in Ireland," teacher Stephanie Horan told the Killarney Advertiser. "As part of the St Vincent De Paul programme, the students were provided with opportunities to engage in social action in their local community and encourage personal and social development. We are proud to hand over €1,270 to St Vincent De Paul to continue the work that they do. What an amazing amount raised by our girls and is testament to the work that was put in."
Car park urgently sought for Blue Pool walkway | By Sean Moriarty A car park is badly needed at the entrance to the recently refurbished Blue Pool public amenity in Mangerton. That is according to Cllr Michael Gleeson who, last year, was part of Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal volunteer group who refurbished the popular and scenic walking route. Their work included the repair of a special rope along the edge of Blue Pool
that allows the visually impaired to safely navigate the route. They also tidied back the overgrown rhododendron on the trail. Gleeson and local council engineers visited the site last week to discuss the provision of a car park near the entrance to the popular trail. “The site has one deficiency – it has no parking,” Cllr Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. "The seed has been sown with the National Parks and Wildlife Services so hopefully they will keep this in mind.”
On Wednesday morning, members of the Kerry Hospice Foundation Killarney Branch met outside Celtic Whiskey on New St to graciously receive €2,042 from kind-hearted staff members who held a fundraising food evening on September 14. Four of Ireland's top young chefs including Jason Nolan who is Head Chef at Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder in Killarney, Conor Halpenny of The Square in Dundalk, Dan Guerin of Cush in Ballycotton, and Andrew Ryan formerly Ashford Castle Hotel in Mayo organised and catered to 34 guests at a socially distanced evening of fine food. They were served up a delicious four course tasting menu at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder along with Celtic Whis-
key Shop & Wines on the Green donating the accompanying wine pairings as well as canapés and petit fours. Tickets were €100 each and after costs the majority of the money raised went to the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Pat Doolan, Chairperson of Kerry Hospice Killarney Branch said that they are very grateful to receive the donation. "I want to thank the Celtic Whiskey Bar for selecting us as beneficiaries in particular with Jason Nolan and his team for organising the event," he told the Killarney Advertiser. "I want to acknowledge that the staff volunteered their services on the night which was a kind gesture. Fundraising for the hospice is challenging so we're very grateful for all the support we get." Chef Jason Nolan added that they chose the KHF as their charity as it has a meaning to everyone. "We were delighted to help them out. It is a fantastic cause and they're down in funding this year. The night itself was great."

Gene makes an emotional return to UHK A trip back to University Hospital Kerry (UHK) proved very emotional for Killarney man Gene Tangney this week after contracting COVID-19 and spending four months in their care. | By Michelle Crean
EXCLUSIVE
Gene was accompanied by Denis Geaney and his ‘Team Geaney’ to donate a generous €27,465 which was donated from the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in July. Team Geaney organised the cycle after being inspired by Gene's will and determination to get better following his horrific Coronavirus battle resulting in medical professionals at the hospital placing him in an induced coma and ventilator to assist in his breathing for three months. The night before the cycle, Gene’s friends and family were greeted with the amazing news that Gene from the Black
Valley, though frail, had finally been released from UHK. The surprise visit was very emotional to see his dad and family in the Black Valley on that Friday night. Making the donation this week, Gene was met with staff and management of the ICU at the hospital, it was very emotional for all, the atmosphere was palpable. Today Gene is in need of much rehabilitation and ongoing treatment and the recovery is slow. Gene also presented a framed picture for the ICU ward in grateful appreciation to the care and attention he received. “We were absolutely delighted with the
amount of money raised," charity organiser Denis Geaney said. "The generosity of people never ceases to amaze me. Gene together with his partner Máire and close family went through hell and back, they are so loved and respected in Kerry. We felt this was a very positive and practical thing to do for Gene and the ICU department. Honestly, it was the most enjoyable charity cycle in all my 37 years of the event.” Gene, together with all the Tangney family, especially his son Feidhlim and daughter Fiadhna, partner Máire O’Grady, his dad Dikey, sisters Siobhan, Susan, Irene, Mary Rose, brother Derry, nieces and nephews, Gary, Christina, Claire, Michelle and Sinead, are so grateful to the medical team and hospital staff in UHK.
The 100,000 friends and well-wishers who lit candles in solidarity with Gene on Easter Monday night at 9pm kept them all going throughout his long ordeal. “I would like to pay tribute to Denis Geaney and his team for organising this wonderful and worthy event," Gene said at the emotional presentation. "I would also take this opportunity to thank each and every member of staff at UHK and especially the team in the ICU, without them I would not be here today. To everyone who sent me messages of support and held a vigil for me during my darkest hour, thank you all. To my dad, my family and great friends, who have stood by me, thank you so much. Finally, to Máire my partner, thank you for your ongoing love and care, I’m forever in your gratitude.”
Kerry Londoners uncertain following new UK restrictions | By Sean Moriarty Killarney people living in London say that they do not know when they will be able to get home to see family again - due to the new UK COVID restrictions. The British Government announced a range of new and tighter restrictions this week in an effort to curb growing COVID-19 cases in the country. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that if Tuesday’s new restrictions were not successful the country could he heading for a second full lockdown. Restrictions imposed on businesses and people to stop the spread of COVID-19 could be in place for six months without major progress in areas such as vaccine
and treatment development, he said. The news was a bitter blow to many Kerry people living in the UK capital. Noel O’Sullivan, who is originally from Ballaugh just outside town, has been living and working in London for the last 48 years but, thanks to Ryanair and Kerry Airport, he was able to get home a few times a year. His last visit was Christmas - and this has been the longest period he has not been back home in nearly 50 years. “It is hard to imagine that we were reading about this virus in China in January and how it has completely changed the way we live,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. A life-long GAA fan, he has been involved with St Kiernan’s Club in Hendon, north London for years.
The London County Championship only got underway two weeks ago and already new restrictions could prevent the planned ban on spectators being lifted early next month. “It is very hard on the elderly who may not be savvy with mobile phones and the Internet,” he added. “Going out to the games was their only way of meeting people and getting the news from home.” Mr O’Sullivan is well-known in Irish community organisations in London. He is a former London GAA County Board chairman, a long-serving committee member of the London Rose of Tralee Centre, the Kerry Association London, and The Killarney Reunion. His work for all of these organisations, as well as family occasions, meant he was a frequent visitor over the years.
UNCERTAINTY: Noel O'Sullivan, pictured with Pearse O'Reilly of Irish TV at the London GAA headquarters in Ruislip, says he has no idea when he will make it home for a visit to Killarney.
“I had planned to come for a month in August and that fell through,” he said. “As a family we had booked a week in October but that is cancelled now. When is it all going to end.”

BACK TO BUSINESS - PUBS

There was a general sense of relief by pub owners and customers on Monday as they settled in for a fresh pint or two as the pubs finally reopened their doors following six months of closures.
"We had people waiting outside the door to come in and they're delighted to be back, there's also the social aspect of getting out of the house for them. This is a great day for the pubs that we're all able to open the doors." Customers Larry Hickey and PJ Burke from Ballyspillane also agreed. "It should have been open long ago," Larry said. "The first pint was beautiful." PJ added that he's very happy to be back to see his friends again over a pint. "I was missing the craic. We're here to support local business. Alan, without a shadow of a doubt, is definitely the soundest fella you could meet." Patrick Culloty said that he was glad to

Declan O'Riordan were in flying form as they pulled pints and enjoyed the craic with their many regulars which they missed. Alan told the Killarney Advertiser that the sudden closure had to happen due to the pandemic - but that he didn't envision that he'd be closed for this long. "It's brilliant to be open again but it's going to be tricky," he said.

ENJOYING A PINT
The same sentiments were shared in The Speakeasy Bar on High Street with owner Gavin O'Donoghue, who opened his doors at 12 noon, explaining that the last few months have been some of the most difficult the pub has experienced. Gavin told the Killarney Advertiser. "I thought it would be a month's closure - not six months. My biggest fear is a spike in cases which could close the pubs again. The main thing is peoples' behaviour. People have to take responsibility for themselves to manage it and they will too. It's common sense." He added that safety measures have been put in place but feels table service is causing extra costs. "I have to have extra staff in because of the table service. My biggest pet peeve is why there can't be a service counter at the bar. There's one in every shop you go into!" Customer Bill Maxwell, who is living in Killarney for the last 31 years, was spotted by the Killarney Advertiser getting ready to enjoy a pint of Guinness. He smiled as he took the first refreshing first mouthful. "The first pint was beautiful," he said. "I'm glad to see the bar back open!" John Russell and Marian Howell from Dublin who were seated at the nearby table told the Killarney Advertiser that they were enjoying a staycation in Killarney. "It's great to be able to come into a pub and not have to order the food." At another corner were the self-named 'Ascot Racing Club' from Drogheda who have been coming to Killarney annually for 30 years. Brian Keough said that if the pubs -
particularly The Speakeasy - wasn't opened in time for their holiday that they wouldn't have come to Killarney. "We have been coming to this pub for 30 years. We're glad to see it open. We weren't coming if The Speakeasy wasn't open."
NO MORE FOOD RESTRICTIONS
Meanwhile, The Sportsmans Bar on Upper High Street has been open since August 10 - but owner John Cronin, who has been running the bar for six years, said it's a relief that he no longer has to serve food to keep the doors open. "COVID was the worst thing that came," he told the Killarney Advertiser. "We did food, soup and sandwiches - my wife Theresa did that. It was a hardship but at least we were opened and customers were happy. We're delighted we don't have restrictions of food anymore, it's table service only. It's lovely to see people on the premises again." He added that unfortunately due to social distancing and the limited number of people allowed on the premises at any one time that they're turning people away when the bar is full. For 80 consecutive years much loved Killarney pharmacist and horse racing enthusiast Donie Sheahan hasn't missed the Listowel Races. Journalist Sean Moriarty took some time out to find out how the 94-year-old felt about not being there, having instead no choice but to resign himself to the fact that he had to watch it from the comfort of his own home.
No Listowel races for the first time in over 80 years The traditional September Harvest Festival meeting comes to a close tomorrow (Saturday) but, as it is run behind closed doors, Donie has been forced to watch proceedings on television and not trackside.
EXCLUSIVE
It is the first time since he was a little boy that Donie, who turned 94 in April, could not be there in person to see the action unfold. Instead he sits at home and watches the action unfold on racing channels like At the Races and TG4. “I would much rather be there,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. The Lewis Road man’s family are steeped in the history of Listowel Races. His parents William and Lena ran a pub and boarding house in the town. The pub had six livery stables to its rear, at a time when there were no stables at the island racecourse so jockeys and racehorses lodged with the Sheahan family for the duration of the meeting.
The family would collect horses off the train ahead of the meeting. “I have memories from when I was no more than six or seven-years-old,” he recalled. “We would walk the horses down to the Island, sometimes over the bridge and other times across the river. I got to know a lot of people.” And this is how Donie and his late brother Tommy developed their lifelong love affair with horse racing. Tommy went on to serve as chair of the Listowel Race Committee and his daughter, Donie’s niece, Dr Helen Lynch from Tralee, currently sits at the table. “There is a huge family connection there,” he added. On qualifying as a pharmacist Donie moved to Killarney in 1950, and after a spell with the medical department of Kerry County Council and the Southern Health Board he set up a thriving pharmacy in the town centre. This allowed him to follow his true passions, which also includes Dr Crokes

GAA Club and Kerry football, and he became a successful racehorse owner. He has had a lot of success over the years including several Listowel winners, but the big one - The Kerry National - escaped him as he recorded two second-places with ‘For William’. “I had three or four winners in Listowel but for two years in a row the Kerry National escaped me,” he added. Other fond memories include winning the Fairyhouse Easter Festival in 2010

with ‘For Bill’, and jockey Davy Russell. ‘For Bill’ was named after a close friend Bill Murphy, a Garda Superintendent in Killarney, after he passed away. In more recent years Donie has represented the European Breeders Association at Listowel. If that organisation sponsored a race he would be called upon to hand out the trophies. “It is funny but people always remember you when you give them a prize!"
The Irish Blood Transfusion Board is operating blood donation clinics in the Dromhall Hotel from Monday to Thursday next week September 28 to October 1. Breeda O’Donoghue is preparing for her 51st donation having first donated blood over 30 years ago. The mother of three donates every three months and is encouraging more to do the same. “In my 30 years donating it has never once impacted on my life in a negative way,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “My three sons, the youngest 19, does it and it such an important thing to do.”
One of Breeda’s favourite parts of the whole process is knowing her healthy blood is going to help someone less fortunate. “The Irish Blood Transfusion Board always ring you and tell you where your blood went to. My last donation went to someone in Wexford, but it could be a hospital too,” she added. “The main point I want to get across is people should be doing this, it does not impact their lives in anyway but it could save someone else.” New changes introduced as a result of COVID-19 restrictions mean donors must pre-register, via www.giveblood.ie, for each clinic as walk-ins are no longer allowed. All other COVID-19 regulations like social distancing and mask wearing are observed during each clinic. Also, donations are not allowed while pregnant or one year after giving birth.

OUTDOOR DINING: Street scenes like this are common in Europe and Cllr Michael Gleeson says the time is right to explore such an idea in Killarney.
Calls for on street dining and seating in Killarney town centre | By Sean Moriarty A plan to roof the centre of Killarney to allow people to socialise outside in all weathers could be back on the agenda thanks to Coronavirus restrictions. The idea to place retractable umbrellas over Main St had been given approval by the previous town council but that idea was pushed off the agenda in 2014 when town councils were merged with the Council and were restructured as municipal districts. The idea was first put forward by Cllr Michael Gleeson seven years ago and the Independent Alliance politician sees merit in re-introducing the idea as a solution to indoor socialising that has been restricted as a result of the pandemic. At the time local engineer Paudie O’Mahoney devised a plan to keep the rain off of tourists and locals alike. It included placing an ‘artificial roof’ over the streets of Killarney which can be removed in the summer when the weather is nice and put back up when it's raining. The plan is to make the artificial roofs from large sections of heavy-duty canvas. "This canopy cover system could be introduced on a trial basis in a lane way or
even on one of the main streets and I can see it taking off all over the country in a very short space of time,” Paudie said in 2013. A year later Kerry County Council said details and specifications had been agreed with a specialist supplier, but the tender process had not been completed prior to the town council’s abolition. Cllr Gleeson raised the matter at a Killarney Municipal District meeting earlier this month as part of a debate surrounding pedestrianisation and the Safe Streets project. His idea is to put a covered seating area in the centre of the town’s streets which would be owned and maintained by the Municipal District Council and placed in such a way that it would not favour any particular business. Mr Gleeson says the idea works well on the continent, particularly Belgium which enjoys a similar climate to Ireland. “It is time to look at Al Fresco dining on the streets of Killarney,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I have seen something similar in a large hotel in Dublin and it is quite common in Europe. It would enhance Killarney as a tourist destination as tourists and locals could socialise in a safe distance. Belgium can be colder than here in the winter but it works there.”

Columbarium wall nears completion | By Sean Moriarty A new Columbarium wall at Knockeendubh cemetery in Killarney is nearing completion. The five piece wall, which will be used to store one hundred slots for urns of people who passed away, will be finished by the end of September or early next month. Contractors are currently on site and are currently working on the centre piece which will include a granite surround and seating once completed. The Columbarium wall itself, which is already built, will be delivered to the site in five separate units and placed in position by crane in the next week or two,
contractors confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser. Mayor Brendan Cronin has been a longtime advocate of the project. Earlier this year he sought clarification from Council Chief Executive Moira Murrell on a previous commitment given by the Council that the construction would go ahead despite COVID-19 disrupting Council work programmes. He is delighted that the project is finally coming to fruition. “We are in changing times and it is important to have such an amenity in the area,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “This will be here for future generations. This was promised to us and I am delighted to see it is nearly completed.”
No Rás Mumhan for Killarney | By Sean Moriarty An opportunity to bring one of Ireland’s biggest cycling races to Killarney has been lost to Thurles in County Tipperary. Rás Mumhan is one of the biggest races in the Irish cycling calendar, attracting over 200 of the best national and international cyclists. For 20 years the four-day event was based in Killorglin and was contested on roads in the Killarney area. In May this year the long serving organising committee took the decision to retire and the chance to organise the event was
offered up to any Cycling Ireland affiliated club in Munster. This week Cllr Peter Ryan, a Tipperary councillor, announced he had secured the race for Thurles just days after Sam Bennett from Carrick-on-Suir in County Tipperary won the coveted Green Jersey on the Tour de France. "I'm thrilled that we have been given the opportunity to hold this prestigious event. It will attract top athletes and showcase the county. When I decided to become a councillor, I pledged to increase tourism in Tipperary and having the Rás Mumhan in Tipperary will certainly attract tourists," he said. Tipperary’s gain is Killarney’s loss.

Ava Max Heaven & Hell 'Heaven & Hell' is the debut studio album by American singer Ava Max released through Atlantic Records. Following the release of 'Sweet but Psycho' in August 2018, which became a breakthrough song ultimately reaching number one in 22 countries and charting at number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, Max toured overseas for 30 to 40 days before returning home where she began writing for her then-untitled debut studio album. She insisted she wanted an upbeat energy to the album so that it would

be cohesive, as she didn't want every song to sound the same. She described some songs as "very strong and empowering", while others "are a little bit more emotional". Max explained that she wanted the album cover to be "pretty simple" as she used several crazy ideas in her previous covers. The back cover and booklet contained photos which depict heaven being in space and hell being on earth, which she described as an "entire world that I created".

Autumn is such a beautiful time of year Looking across the lakes at the native, deciduous trees on the mountains, or walking through the National Park with its abundance of same, always fills me with a sense of wonder. Autumn is such a beautiful time of year, especially when it comes to trees. Their colours always bring me to primary school and nature tables! I feel no garden is complete without a tree, and better still a tree which has good autumn colour! Liquidambar or Sweetgum, is a fantastic tree for a small garden. It has maple shaped, glossy green leaves, which turn a rich red at this time of year. They are tenacious too, and will hang on through plenty of wind. Liquidambers grow to about 10m, but quite slowly and can be pruned easily. ‘Worplesdon' is an excellent variety to try. Mountain Ash, or Sorbus, are also a good choice for autumn colour in a small garden. ‘Autumn Spire’ retains a narrow growth habit, has deep red autumn foliage teamed with an abundance of orange berries. Sorbus ‘Joseph’s Rock' has a more open growth, with bright yellow berries which stay on the tree until quite late in winter. S. ‘Chinese Lace’ is less hardy, but has delicate lacy foliage with pink berries and are worth giving up a sheltered corner for! Liriodendron, or the tulip tree, is a fabulous tree suited to a large garden as it can grow to 30m. It is a very long lived tree, producing iconic yellow tulip shaped flowers at the old age of 25. However, in the meantime it has uniquely shaped
leaves also reminiscent of tulips which turn a rich shade of yellow in the fall of the year. It loves our slightly acidic soil and tolerates a bit of exposure. An all-time favourite in our garden is Enkianthus – a small tree/large shrub which has stunning autumn foliage. In the spring it produces masses of bell shaped flowers in white tipped with pink which hang in clusters under the foliage. Its growth habit is unusual in that it produces the world of leaves at intervals on the stems, giving quite a delicate appearance. It is a tough plant though! If it's a windy spot you live in, I advise Amelanchier – or Snowy mespilus - a hardy small tree, again, ablaze with colour at this time of year. As the name suggests, it is covered with white blossoms in spring. It tends to spread by snickering, which is ideal if you have a large area, if not, ‘Ballerina’ is less inclined to wander. Red oaks are a must for any large garden, Quercus palustris ‘Green Pillar’ however, is an unusual oak, maintaining a columnar shape, Quercus rubes being the more common large tree we are familiar with. All oaks are an excellent source of nectar for pollinators in the spring and support all types wildlife throughout the year. Last but not least, Acer campestre must be included in our selection! Again, a fairly large hardy tree which is a bright yellow currently. It has a lovely round crown of glossy green maple shaped leaves, and is also a wonderful tree for bees in the spring.

Festival to celebrate Kerry's architectural landscape and heritage Kerry’s architectural heritage and the county’s architectural landscape will be celebrated during the third annual Architecture Kerry Festival this weekend. A wide range of events including free guided tours and exhibitions will take place from September 25 to 27. The aim of the festival, which is part of the Creative Ireland Kerry Programme, is to highlight the wide diversity of the architectural landscape in Kerry and to make some of the best-known sites of architectural significance in the county accessible to all ages. Due to the current pandemic, Architecture Kerry this year has adapted its programme to reflect the need to run many of its events online. However, Architecture Kerry has also reached out to the public to bring the people of Kerry together to be part of the celebration. During August, the Council ran a public photography competition called ‘Rediscovering Your Hidden Kingdom’ whereby people were asked to submit their favourite images of Kerry’s built environment. The top 20 winning entrants will be showcased for Architecture Kerry
2020. Kerry County Council’s Architectural Conservation Officer, Victoria McCarthy, said the programme of events has something for everyone, even those with a passing interest in architecture: "Throughout Saturday 26, and Sunday 27, some festival favourites will be opening their doors for free guided tours. Bookings should be made with each venue." The full programme of events is now available on the Kerry County Council website or via www.architecture.kerrycoco.ie. Festival organiser Victoria McCarthy of Kerry County Council can also be contacted directly at 066 7183793 or at victoria.mccarthy@kerrycoco.ie
Increased demand for places at Kerry College Kerry College of Further Education and Training (Kerry College) welcomed students back on-campus this week – at their four locations in Tralee and Listowel. Demand has increased in many areas this year with many courses now full. All courses for third level progression have started this week. Many courses are full but the late application process remains open. Recruitment for employment-focused courses is ongoing. Some programmes are already up and running and many more are to start in the coming months.
Kerry College offers over one hundred full-time courses across its campus locations in Tralee at Monavalley, Clash Road and Denny Street, and Listowel. There are no tuition fees for full-time Kerry College courses and applicants may apply for a range of funding: SUSI grant, Learner Payment (Training Allowance) or Back to Education Allowance. Kerry College Admissions Officer John Herlihy is saying there is still time to apply. “We know that many school leavers are still waiting on CAO offers and making their minds up on what to do this academic year," he said. WELCOME Welcome to September’s Home and Living. It’s been an unusual month with the return back to school, and with nearly a month down for most students some of the trepidation we felt sending them back is easing slightly, and we are getting into our new normality. We are looking at everything Hygge this month, and how the Danes cope with their long dark winters. Hygge is a word that can’t be directly translated, but it is a lot to do with living in the moment and enjoying the small pleasures, from lighting your favourite candle to making your favourite dinner, or just watching a movie curled up in blankets with your family. I think we all need a bit of Hygge to get us through this winter. Next month we are going to look at Christmas gifts for all the family. Santa has told us here in the Killarney Advertiser that the elves have been busy all year and he will still be delivering his gifts on schedule this year, and Mrs Claus has been making him some lovely new masks.

hygge 30
/ˈh(j)uːɡə,ˈhʊɡə/ noun a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).
31 Hygge, which is actually a word of Norwegian origin, is pronounced “hoo-gah” and loosely translates to “coziness”. But while coziness is a major piece of the puzzle, Hygge is really more of an attitude or mindset. As Natalie Van Deusen, professor of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Alberta, puts it:
“The best translation is coziness, but not the physical coziness that you get when you put on a sweater or cuddle up with a blanket. It’s more of a state of mental balance and psychological well-being. And, believe me, the Danish know what they’re talking about. Despite their dismal winters, with as many as 17 hours of darkness per day, the Danes remain among the happiest people on the planet. You don't plan it, you don't create it, it's not something that can be manufactured or sold, it's a state of being, the
pursuit of everyday happiness. It’s using the winter months to focus on the simple pleasures in life, strive for relaxation and comfort, and pursue togetherness on a daily basis. When you look at winter through a lens like that, it feels a whole lot warmer. How can we learn from the Danes? As Irish people we talk about the weather a lot but never seem to be happy with it! Well, a positive attitude towards winter is a must - we can’t change it, but we can work with it. Get your home comfortable and cozy with lots of candles and lamps, wash all your throws and buy a basket for them so they are accessible, get some new mugs and stock up in hot chocolate, some good books, a kindle, or line up some boxsets, Netflix series you've wanted to watch or a list of movies new or old that tickle your fancy. Try some new board games or a deck of cards, invest in some cozy lounge wear or PJs and those all-important slippers, and get comfortable. Put together a reading corner with a lamp and side table, have everything ready to go and enjoy this relaxing time. If you are more into braving the elements and walking or hiking your way through winter invest in the gear; waterproof runners or boots and a proper rain jacket are a must for comfortable winter walks.
Cozy Up FOR WINTER
It’s time to think about those cozy long winter nights in, and what could be cozier than a stove to warm your toes while you’re Netflix and chilling or curled up with a good book and cup of hot choc-
olate – it’s Hygge at its best. Along with less dusting (always a plus for me!) a stove can be up to three to four times more efficient than an open fire. It’s also a great investment for a sunroom as it
can mean using this room all year round, and with gas stoves that can be vented through a wall without requiring a traditional chimney or bio ethanol fires, there are so many options to choose from.

is ready to give birth. “I have been speaking with a number of pregnant women who are very upset and distressed at the way the other parent of their baby is being treated and I fully understand why they are upset,” Cllr Moloney said. “Attending appointments and scans on their own is a very stressful and yet exciting time for parents alike. If bad news is to be delivered, the expectant mother is on her own to receive this news and must then be the one to try to explain all to the other parent. Thankfully on most occasions the news is good and is a very
exciting and happy time for both parents and seeing your baby on a scan is an amazing experience which unfortunately the father is now being denied.” She added that “it simply does not make sense that six people can attend a meal together, visit a home together, sporting teams can play contact sport together and yet a father cannot be present to help and support during labour, or indeed following delivery, sometimes by section, to help out when help is essential, even though in most cases the mom and dad live together and sleep together”.
UNFAIR: Councillor Marie Moloney says it is unfair that expectant mothers cannot, at present, be accompanied by their husband/partner at the hospital.

ON THE TOOLS: Jim Sweeney has made it through to the final 10 of the Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2020 competition.
Sweeney nails it as he makes tradesmen final | By Sean Moriarty A carpenter from Killorglin has made it through to the final 10 of the Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2020 competition. Jim Sweeney (35), who runs Sweeney Builders, has been selected for his sheer passion for the trade, determination to succeed and demonstrating how he goes above and beyond the call of duty for customers. Sweeney Builders was established December 1988 by Jim Sweeney Sr and it remains a family business today. From 2,500 entrants in Ireland and the UK Jim has made it into the last 10. “It is a manifestation of everything we do, attention to detail and very organ-
ised in everything we do,” Jim told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is good promotion for our business – I started with my father when I was 14 during the summers before serving my time in 2002.” As a first of its kind in Ireland, the competition not only celebrates the outstanding work and professionalism shown by tradespeople throughout the year, but will also crown a winner who will walk away with a €20k bundle including high spec tools, the latest technology to take their business to the next level and training to support their ongoing development. The 10 finalists will take part in a two-day event co-hosted with Google before the winner is announced at Screwfix Live on October 2.
Birch Hill is to receive €154,109 while Old Killarney Village is set to get €247,749 under the Multi-Annual Developer Provided Water Services Infrastructure Resolution Programme. The works have been welcomed by TD Brendan Griffin and Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley. The programme is focused on housing estates which are not taken-in-charge by local authorities and do not have their water services connected to the public water services network but rely instead on infrastructure, often temporary in na-
ture, which was provided by developers. Following consideration by an Expert Panel, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage approved funding allocations amounting to just over €3.3 million to 10 local authorities to resolve 26 housing estates providing water services to almost 950 homes. “This funding will benefit many families in Kerry who have been relying on substandard developer provided wastewater or drinking water treatment plants," Deputy Griffin said. The Department is also re-engaging with local authorities to see if there are additional estates which could be connected to the public network, and which could be included within the programme.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT
KILLARNEY

Irish charities appeal to Kerry for help The people of Kerry are being asked to support an appeal by a consortium of Irish charities who have come together to respond to the Coronavirus pandemic amongst some of the world’s poorest people. Six of Ireland’s leading international aid agencies are teaming up to respond to the worsening global Coronavirus pandemic and to save lives in some of the poorest and most fragile countries. The agencies have combined forces to form the Irish Emergency Alliance (IEA), which will jointly raise money from the Irish public and respond in countries facing rising Coronavirus cases and already struggling to cope with the impact of conflict and displacement as well as widespread poverty, increased rates of hunger and poor health care. The Coronavirus appeal will focus on vulnerable communities in Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, all coping with the impact of wide scale conflict, as well as Ethiopia, Kenya, Lebanon and the Rohingya refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. These seven countries are home to more than 17 million refugees and displaced people. For people living in refugee camps or slums it is nearly impossible to

Monkey takes selfies on stolen phone! Selfies are all the rage - and now it seems that even the monkeys are at it! practice physical distancing, while a lack of soap and water in many homes makes it harder to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. Money raised by the IEA’s appeal will go towards food, water and medical care as well as providing soap, masks and vital information to prevent the spread of the virus. The IEA is made up of ActionAid, Christian Aid, Plan International, Self Help Africa,Tearfund and World Vision who have programmes in 85 different countries. Helen Keogh, Chair of IEA, said the unprecedented scale of the global pandemic motivated the six charities to come together to help those most in need. “We have all seen the devastating impact
of the Coronavirus crisis in Ireland, so you can imagine how much harder it is for people living in countries without enough doctors or nurses let alone enough ICU beds or ventilators. The situation is even more critical in countries already struggling with the impact of conflict and buckling under the strain of massive refugee and displacement crises,” she said. “A lack of widespread testing in many developing countries suggests that we may only be seeing the tip of the iceberg of the true scale of the global crisis.” People in Kerry can support the appeal by donating at www.irishemergencyalliance.org, by calling 1 800 939 979 or by texting IEA to 50 300 to give €4.
This week, a Malaysian student whose cellphone was stolen, set about finding the thief. However, he was landed with a huge surprise to find the culprit - a monkey who took photo and video selfies with the device before abandoning it. All that was left was the phone’s casing in 20-year-old Zackrydz Rodzi's bedroom under his bed in southern Johor State. When his father saw a monkey the next day, he searched in the jungle behind his house and found it covered in mud under a palm tree - with a series of monkey selfies and videos recorded on the phone. “When I checked my phone picture gallery, I was shocked. The suspect’s face was plastered on the screen. It was hilarious,” Zackrydz said.
The USA has Ireland’s back in Brexit deals Whatever happens on November 3, the day of the US Presidential election, Ireland can be assured that the USA will have Irish interests at heart. In less than 40 days’ time the world will learn if Donald Trump has secured a second-term or if his Democratic rival Joe Biden is the next US commander-in-chief. News that the British Government is willing to break international law
and disregard the Northern Ireland border issue as it continues to negotiate a Brexit deal with the European Union did not go down well at the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Biden has warned the UK there would be no US-UK free trade agreement if the Brexit talks ended with the Good Friday Agreement being undermined. He tweeted:
“We can’t allow the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland to become a casualty of Brexit. Any trade deal between the US and UK must be contingent upon respect for the agreement and preventing the return of a hard border. Period.” Trump’s special envoy to Northern Ireland, Mick Mulvaney, has also warned against creating a hard border on the island of Ireland. “The Trump administration, State Department and the US Congress would all be aligned in the desire to see the Good Friday Agreement preserved to see the lack of a border maintained,” said Mr Mulvaney.

Over 45,000 demand better mental health services A petition signed by over 45,000 people asking for 24/7 mental health services was handed to Minister for Mental Health, Mary Butler, in Waterford on Saturday. “More and more lives are being taken everyday around the country by suicide," Uplift member Stacy Quinn, who started the petition on MyUplift, said. "The only way forward is to engage with the people who have mental health illnesses and listen to their needs. As someone who suffered with mental health in the past and who is also beavered several times by suicide, each suicide loss is a lesson learned. We need services; a 24/7 emergency de-
partment service can save lives.” Michelle Byrne, Uplift campaigner added that over 45,000 Uplift members understand the serious need for better mental services in Ireland. "The Government has failed to act for too long. Accepting this petition is the first step - we’re hoping to see action taken by the Minister in the upcoming Budget 2021 next month. But Uplift members will keep pushing until we see 24/7 emergency services rolled out across the country.” Link to petition can be found on ww.my.uplift.ie/petitions/better-mental-health-services-1.

Antioxidants pack a powerful punch
Antioxidants help skin repair itself. Everyone needs to add this to their skin care regime especially while we will be wearing masks. They help by reducing inflammation as antioxidants allow skin repair itself and correct visible damage. A lot of clients are reporting an increase in breakouts even if they never got a spot before - it seems like no one can escape it, especially if they are wearing the mask for eight hours a day. Inflamed skin impedes the rejuvenation process. By reducing inflammation, antioxidants allow skin to repair itself and correct visible damage. Vitamin C can stimulate collagen production that is vital to help reduce breakouts and for youthful skin. Oxidative stress which is caused by wear-
ing masks, smoking, pollution, alcohol, stress, break down collagen, hinders skin's natural repair processes and triggers inflammation. These appear as fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin, acne breakouts and a blotch skin tone. If you feel your skin has changed over the last few months I recommend using an enzymatic face wash daily. Sothys Morning Cleanser softens the skin and prevents superficial clogging, gives the skin radiance and vitality, and provides deep cleansing action for delicate skin. Alternatively purifying foaming gel for oily to combination skin followed by the new Sothys detoxifying range of anti-pollution creams. At night use the award winning Sothys detoxifying resurfacing overnight cream infused with hylauronic acid and Vitamin C.
• If your skin is changing, or you feel like you may need a skin consultation, please call Jill for more information 064 6632966.

Events lined up for Kerry's Mental Health and Well-being Fest Promoting good mental health this October is the aim and it's never been more important than ever with the year that's in it. | By Michelle Crean Between October 10 and 17, Kerry's Mental Health and Well-being Fest has planned a week-long programme of events - but it will be a bit different to previous years due to the current restrictions. Organisers are planning a number of events outdoors and online which will coincide with World Mental Health Day on October 10. Since it was inaugurated in 2018 hundreds of people have attended Kerry’s Mental Health and Well-being Fest each year. An interagency committee, which is supported by Cork-Kerry HSE and Kerry County Council, have organised a range of events including well-being workshops, Forest Therapy, seminars, walks, coffee mornings, meditation and mindfulness, activity sessions, workplace workshops, self-care workshops, Zumba and yoga classes and more. Launching the programme of events this week, the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen, explained that he is hugely aware of the mental health and well-being impact that this pandemic has had on people across the county. "It is very important, this year especially, that the Mental Health and Well-being Fest is held to highlight the mental health services and supports that are available to people across the county. While observing the public health guidelines, the Fest offers an opportunity to connect with people and engage in activities
that support people’s overall health and well-being," he said. Donagh Hennebry, Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention, Cork-Kerry Community Healthcare with the HSE, added that the programme of events has come together with the support of all the local statutory agencies working together with the very positive input of community and voluntary groups all over Kerry. "This year the Cork and Kerry Fests will be held simultaneously in an effort to further highlight the support for mental health and well-being across the region and extend the reach of the message of the Five Ways to Wellbeing." The Five Ways to Well-being are: • Connect – with the people around you at home, work, school, and in your local community. • Take Notice – Savour the moment whether you are walking, eating, or talking. Be aware of the world around you and what you’re feeling. • Be Active – Step outside. Go for a walk, cycle, garden or dance. Discover a physical activity that suits your lifestyle. • Give – Do something nice for a friend or a stranger. Thank someone. Volunteer. Join a community group. • Keep Learning – Try something new, rediscover an old interest. Take on new responsibilities. Fix a bike. Learn how to cook your favourite meal. Full details of the programme of events are now available on the Healthy Kerry and Kerry County Council websites www.healthykerry.ie.

HEALTH & FITNESS Plans for 2021 Killarney whiskey festival
Advice - By Brian Foley
Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
Don't embark on your fitness journey alone As we watched Sam Bennett’s amazing achievement in the Tour De France last weekend, some thoughts struck me about how cycling is a lot like life, health and fitness. Three good cyclists will always beat one great cyclist to the top of the hill. Going up that hill alone is harder. The whole way you have the wind in your face pushing you back. You have no rest time. The only thing you can rely on is your legs and they're starting to burn. The group of three can take turns at the front. Sometimes they are pushing against the wind and sometimes they can tuck in behind another rider's wheel, saving up to 30 percent of their energy. The front rider provides protection and everyone else can ride in the draft. When that rider gets tired they can switch out and use someone else's momentum. It's extremely rare for the winner of a Tour de France stage to be at the front the entire time. They're usually protected by their team until it's time for them to push on at the end.
DON'T TRY TO GO ALONE YOURSELF...
If you want to be successful then you need a team with you. You sometimes need to be at the front pulling the team along and sometimes you can ride in the draft. There's a reason that places like Activate will have at least 60 percent of their members attend on any given day.
People know that when they aren't quite feeling it, the rest of their team will help pull them along. Compare that to an industry-wide 18 percent regular attendance such as large chain gyms with no coaching or leadership. I'm telling you that you should not join a gym to get fit. Joining a gym is like joining a library to help you diagnose your own illness. Yes, all the books are there and you can read all the medical journals to maybe figure it out, but there's no draft to fall in behind when you're feeling tired of the research. Traditional gyms are full of weights, machines and other tools to help you get fit and achieve your goals. It's all there and it can be enough for some people, albeit a very small number.
FIND YOUR NEW TRIBE
Instead, you need to find a team, a coach and some friends with the same mindset as you. The friends part may be different from the ones you currently have. They may not be on the same chapter as you are. You may need to find your new tribe. Once you have found your tribe things can become a little easier. You still have to work hard and your goals are still for you to get to the top of the hill. The tribe will pull you on the days you're not quite feeling it and when you make good progress, you will pull others along with you too. Don't try to go it alone, the view at the top is always best shared.
Killarney could host a dedicated Whiskey Festival in 2021. | By Sean Moriarty That is the plan of the newly formed Irish Whiskey Society Killarney Chapter. The new group will host its first event on Monday next week when it will visit the Skellig Six18 Distillery and Visitor Experience Cahersiveen. “The Killarney chapter of the Irish whiskey society, a society dedicated to the finer points and the sensible enjoyment of Irish whiskey has been launched in Killarney,” chapter public relations coordinator Dermot McGuckin said. “Lead by a team of whiskey sommeliers, through educational events and tastings, we will explore the huge growth and interest in Irish whiskey.” Monday’s visit departs from the Celtic Whiskey Bar and Larder on New St at 3pm. Tickets for the social distancing compliant event cost €40. McGuckin hopes events like this will pave a way for a Whiskey Festival in the town next year. There is currently one whiskey distillery in operation in Fossa, O'Connell’s Wayward Irish Spirit while there are two more under construction in nearby Aghadoe
WHISKEY FEST: Sir Maurice O'Connell of Wayward Irish Spirits, one of three distilleries in the Fossa area
and west of the village on the Ring of Kerry road. “We are blessed in Kerry to have our own fine brands of whiskey and now through the launch of the Irish Whiskey Society chapter in Killarney we can explore the finer points of good tasting,” added McGuckin.
Kelly urges von der Leyen to act on Daylight Savings time Seán Kelly MEP marked the Autumn Equinox on Tuesday by urging European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to reignite efforts towards scrapping the bi-annual clock change. Mr. Kelly is Ireland’s only Member of the European Parliament’s Working Group on the bi-annual Clock Change, and has been campaigning for the best part of a decade to scrap Daylight Savings Time. Speaking from Killarney, he highlighted the need to revisit the issue, which awaits EU Member States taking a formal position in the European Council, two years on from an EU-wide public consultation which saw 84 percent of respondents in favour of putting an end to the bi-annual clock change. “The EU-wide public consultation on daylight savings time two years ago received 4.6 million responses – the highest ever engagement for an EU public consultation. “EU citizens overwhelmingly supported the abolishment of the biannual clock change and ending this outdated prac-
tice. “This is an issue of great interest to my constituents across Ireland-South. Studies have shown that the disruption caused by the clock change has a detrimental impact on our health. It can lead to weakened immunity and sleeping patterns and in some cases, increased anxiety and depression. It can also affect tiredness in drivers, increasing the risk of accidents. "We need to listen to our voters and deliver on an initiative that has overwhelming support among EU citizens." MEP Kelly noted that political leadership at the highest level was needed to persuade EU Member States to agree with the wish of both European Commission and European Parliament to end the annual practice. “Jean-Claude Juncker’s Commission proposed to scrap the clock change in September 2018, and Parliament endorsed this position in March 2019. Member States have so far failed to back the proposal. Now it is time for President von der Leyen to put pressure on Member States and resolve this issue once and for all.”

Fassbender makes ‘under the radar’ debut at Le Mans support race Local Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender made a surprise appearance at Le Mans last weekend as he continues his bid in the legendary 24 hour race next June. The Fossa man took part in an official Porsche Carrera Cup support race on Saturday morning which was run as a curtain raiser to the main event that got underway later that afternoon. The Saturday morning race was run as a combined round of the German and French Porsche Carrera Cup championships to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary. Fassbender competed as the official VIP driver in a Porsche 911 GT3 supplied by Porsche AG in Germany. It was his first taste of the legendary French track and is another step towards his goal of tackling the 24 Hours of Le Mans next season. “I found it exciting to drive here for the
first time. It rained before the race, so the track was really slippery. I spun on the formation lap, but that was a wake-up call for the race. I simply need a lot of track time to realise my dream of competing here with Porsche next year,” he said. The famous actor crossed the finish line in 38th place in the 53-strong field. Fassbender is contesting this year’s European Le Mans series with Dempsey-Proton Racing. The series is considered level three in his bid to tackle the famous French endurance race and now that he has gained valuable track time at the La Sarthe venue his dream has taken another step towards reality. “It’s always wonderful to be able to tackle new projects. This is a very special one,” said Dempsey-Proton Racing team owner Christian Ried. “It’ll be interesting to see how Michael progresses. As a team, we’re delighted to be able to accompany him on his ‘Road to Le Mans’.”

Autumn in the air By Nicky Barry
There is a mystic rhythm, to the seasons as they wane, They come along like clockwork, although with climate change, There are variations creeping in, as the months slip slowly by, Days are getting shorter, as the sun sinks in the sky. Chestnut trees are turning brown, and nuts are falling down, In amongst the autumn leaves, scattered on the ground. Red berries on the brambles, are now turning black, And kids have all returned to school, delighted to be back. Cows are rooting around pastures, for the last of summer grass, And tourists all have packed their bags, and motored back to base. Tubridy is back in his chair, on The Late Late Show, And publicans have at last opened up their doors. Stags are frantic in the woods, rounding up their does, To get ready for the rut, and intimidate their foes. The little does, God bless them, are blissfully unaware,

Of what’s about to happen, as they stand and stare, At the big guys with antlers, roaring at the young bucks, To skedaddle pronto, before the action starts. The nights are getting chillier, with just a touch of frost, And soon the clocks will go back, with another summer lost.

Irish Wheelchair Association appeals for support The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) in Kerry has decided to cancel its annual street collection due to the COVID-19 pandemic to protect the health and safety of the public, its volunteers, and the people it supports. The charity has launched an online appeal called ‘Without You, We’re Stuck’ and is asking people to make a donation through its website, www.iwa.ie. IWA annual collection, which normally takes place across the country, raises €300,000 towards the charity’s work for people with physical disabilities. This is the first time in the collection’s 30-year history that it has been cancelled. “The loss of this critical income is concerning at a time when our local fundraising events have already had to stop,” Terry O'Brien of the IWA said. “We estimate that we will have lost almost €1 million in fundraising income nationally by the end of the year. Without this support, our services and the people we support, will be stuck. “Our services are needed now, more than ever. We would be incredibly grateful if people could remember IWA services in Kerry this week and make a donation through our website.” To support Irish Wheelchair Association’s ‘Without You, We’re Stuck’ appeal visit www.iwa.ie.

Start your 2021 CAO STUDENTS DIARY research early to make an informed decision Our new weekly column hears from local students about what school life is like as they accept the new changes in their school. Each week we will hear from a different student about how they are coping and what COVID school life is now like. This week St Brigid's Transition Year student Illona Sheehan keeps readers up to date.
While the CAO offer stages for the 2020 class are still ongoing and will be until mid-October, the process is only beginning for the 2021 entry. Whether you are a Leaving Cert student in June 2021, a Post Leaving Cert student, a graduate of further education or an adult planning to return to education as a mature student, the message is the same – start your research early. The CAO 2021 handbooks have been issued to schools and will be available shortly to download from www.cao.ie. As is the case every year the handbook provides a detailed guide about how the CAO process works for each category of applicant, how to apply, the important deadlines and a comprehensive list of all the Level 8 and Level 7/6 courses available in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the country for 2021 entry. Contact details for the admissions offices in all the HEIs are also included as well as a list of the college websites.
APPLICATION PROCESS
The application process for 2021 doesn’t open until November 5 at 12 noon, but in the meantime it is a good idea to do as much research as possible so that you are in a position to make an informed decision when it comes to application deadlines later on in the year as they coincide with busy stages of the academic year. Trying to decide what path you want to take can be confusing and a cause of stress. CAO is just one of several options. titudes, learning style, and motivations, and outward at the many options available to you. While the detail of course content and entry requirements will need to be researched on college websites, you will find the list of courses in the hardcopy of the CAO handbook or as a downloadable PDF on the website. You will also find lots of useful student resources and information for parents on the website. Browse through the lists to see the range of courses available. You can apply for 20 courses in your CAO application, 10 Level 8 choices, and 10 Level 7/6 choices. The golden rule is that they must be listed in Order of Preference. There is lots of time available so use it wisely – explore the options and familiarise yourself with the CAO process. It will help immensely later on in the year if you have started your research in plenty of time.
Now that we have returned to school it seems like we all have regained some form of normality, and the Junior Certificate drama is a distant memory. However, school looks a lot different than it did nearly six months ago. One way systems, masks and staying in a base classroom most of the time are just a few of the changes. Being in Transition Year, there are obvious differences between our experience and that of previous years. Despite our teachers and TY coordinator, Ms. O'Connor, trying their best to organise activities for us, I know it won't be possible for some of the bigger trips to take place such as the one to Paris. We have all accepted that as a small price to pay for the safety of ourselves and others, and are settling into the new routine of disinfecting our tables and chairs whenever we come into a room and eating lunch in the classroom or outside if the weather is favourable. We've already had some really good activities in school such as a First Aid workshop and a CSI workshop about evidence and DNA. We're also very fortunate to be able to do work experience and thankful to the places who have taken us on in this unorthodox situation.
DIFFERENT: School life is very different since returning says St Brigid's TY student Illona Sheehan.
One good thing that has come out of this is lighter school bags for all years. We can now use a refill pad for all our subjects and sort the sheets into a folder when we get home rather than bringing in and out six hardback copies every day. This would be one change I wouldn't mind making permanent. Overall, the masks may inhibit our talking somewhat but, in the end, if that is what we must do to keep things moving we will comply. I couldn't have imagined making it through the last six months without the wonder of technology!
IT Tralee welcomes students back on campus Students made a return to college life in the Institute of Technology Tralee on Monday while the new first year students undertook a virtual orientation session before they commence their classes from next Monday. As the numbers on campus must be limited due to the social distancing health and safety requirements, a blended teaching and learning approach is necessary. Round One offers were issued to CAO applicants on Friday, September 10. Students had until Wednesday September 16 at 3pm to accept these offers. In Kerry, the total number of applica-
tions of Kerry-based students to CAO was 2,354. "Overall the points for the Round One show that courses with strong employment prospects garnered a lot of interest among students," IT Tralee, President Dr Brendan O’Donnell said. "CAO applicants in 2020 have faced an unprecedented year and Calculated Grades have seen an increase of points in a number of areas with others remaining relatively static." In terms of emerging trends, courses within the health sector experienced rises across the country. This trend is reflected at IT Tralee where Round One points for General Nursing rose to 441 points, up from 407 in 2019 and Mental
Health Nursing rose to 389, up from 378. Business programmes at the Institute also saw an increase in applications for a third year in a row. This acknowledges the strong transferable skills that are associated with these programmes. Aileen Kennedy, Acting Vice President Academic Affairs and Registrar, encouraged students who are still considering their options to look at the ‘CAO Available Places’ facility, which is open until today (Friday) at 5pm. Students using this facility should also contact admissions@ ittralee.ie for advice on their application. "Available places are places that remain unfilled in particular courses after all offers have been made. IT Tralee are
offering four programmes through available places: TL620 Higher Certificate in Culinary Arts; TL651 Higher Certificate in Science in Environmental and Biological Studies; TL773 BSc in Coaching and Sports Performance and TL745 BEng in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and this can represent an opportunity for students who did not get their preferred course choice," Aileen said. Places are also available on two new degrees commencing this September in ‘Inclusive Sport and Physical Activity’ (NFQ Level 7 and 8) at IT Tralee. Applications for these direct entry programmes also remain open until today (Friday) at 5pm. For more see www.ittralee.ie.

1ST ANNIVERSARY HARRINGTON
2ND ANNIVERSARY
God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be So He put his arms around you and He whispered “Come to Me” With tearful eyes we watched you, all gathered around to say goodbye Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay.
Somewhere in my heart, Beneath all my grief and pain, Is a smile I still wear At the sound of your dear name. The precious word is ‘MOTHER’, She was my world you see, But now my heart is breaking , Cause she’s no longer here with me. God chose her for His angel To watch me from above, To guide me and advise me, And know that I’m still loved. The day she had to leave me, When her life on earth was through, God had better plans for her, For this, I surely knew. When I think of her kind heart, And all those loving years, My memories surround me And I can’t hold back the tears. She truly was my best friend, Someone I could confide in, She always had a tender touch, And a warm and gentle grin. I want to thank you Mother, For teaching me so well, And though the time has come, that I must bid you this farewell. I’ll remember all you’ve taught me, And make you proud you’ll see. Thank you my Dear Mother, For all the love you showed me. Although you’ve left this earth, And now you’ve taken flight, I know that you are here with me, Each morning, noon and night.

Every breath I take every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing, you can certainly recreate me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any unproductive cells. Open any blocked arteries and rebuild any damaged areas. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. With Thanks, M.J.K

To hear your voice, to see your smile, To sit and talk with you awhile To be together in the same old way would be my dearest wish today
Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. East Kerry to face Mid Kerry in first all-divisional county final since 2007 KERRY SFC FINAL
_________________________________________________________________________
East Kerry v Mid Kerry Saturday at 7pm
| By Adam Moynihan
Austin Stack Park | Live on 247.tv We made it anyway. That’s the main thing. For a while there it looked like we wouldn’t have any County Championship this year, so well done to all involved for making sure that we won’t have a bothersome asterisk alongside ‘2020’ on the Kerry SFC Wikipedia page. And you’d have to say that, all things considered, it has been an entertaining tournament. A return to the straight knockout format of old (a necessary revision due to time constraints post-lockdown) added to the excitement and there have been some cracking matches to date. Dr Crokes v Austin Stacks, East Kerry v St Kieran’s and Mid Kerry v Kenmare spring to mind, although all three fall just short of the immaculate standard set by Mid Kerry’s frantic triumph over the Crokes in the last four. Whatever the outcome tomorrow evening, let’s all hope for a fitting finale. With the plethora of talent on show, we should have nothing to worry about.
JUSTIFIED
East Kerry were odds-on favourites to retain the Bishop Moynihan Cup in 2020 and in two of their three matches thus far, they justified that pre-tournament status. In truth, Feale Rangers provided little by way of resistance in Round 1 and

25.9.2020 St Brendan’s fell well short of the required standard in the semi-final. That squeaky encounter in between against an energetic St Kieran’s side was their only real test. In fact, they could well have been beaten that day had Kieran’s not missed a second-half penalty. All-in-all it has been business as usual, though. Paul Murphy has come in and provided an extra layer of security and calmness to what was already a very assured back line. At midfield, Ronan Buckley has built on a really impressive campaign in 2019 to come back looking stronger and more commanding than ever. And up front, Paudie Clifford continues to dictate proceedings with his mazy runs, delectable kick-passing and eye for goal. That would be enough of a platform for any team to challenge for a county title, and we haven’t even mentioned the full forward line yet. In the younger Clifford, Darragh Roche and Evan Cronin, East Kerry have three of the deadliest scorers in the game and it is a monumental task, bordering on the impossible, to keep all three quiet on a given day. Cronin is probably the unsung hero of this trio, which is strange considering how frequently he finds the target. The Spa man is very diligent and very active; he is a constant thorn in the opposition’s side. His goal against Brendan’s was superbly taken and he will be keen to replicate his efforts in last year’s final when he kicked four points from play. If 13, 14 and 15 play well for East Kerry – and they don’t even have to be spectacular –the Bishop will more than likely be coming back to Killarney via Farranfore for the second year in a row.
Gavan O’Grady is averaging 1-6 per game and he will in all likelihood have to maintain that firing rate, if not improve upon it, if Mid Kerry are to upset the odds in the final. MERIT
That’s not to say that Mid Kerry are chasing a lost cause. Manager Peter O’Sullivan has led his side to three really fine wins to make it this far and they are certainly here on merit. They demolished Kilcummin in Round 1 and, in truth, their double scores margin of victory didn’t flatter them one bit on the day. Then they showed great determination to hang on against Kenmare and win by a single point. It could have gone either way but Mid Kerry showed great character to get over the line, and that character was on show in abundance in their battle for the ages against the Crokes. The divisional side were nothing short of heroic in that one-point, extra-time win and now they find themselves 60 minutes (or maybe 80, or maybe 80 plus however long a penalty shootout takes) away from their first county title in 12 years.
Just two players who played in that 2008 victory over Rahilly’s are involved tomorrow: Darran O’Sullivan, who was corner forward then and still is, and Garry Sayers, who started in ’08 and came off the bench against Dr Crokes two weeks ago. Centre forward Fiachra Clifford and full forward Liam Carey have made significant contributions up to this point but there has been one standout performer: Glenbeigh-Glencar marksman Gavan O’Grady. O’Grady is averaging 1-6 per game in this year’s competition and he will in all likelihood have to maintain that firing rate, if not improve upon it, if Mid Kerry are to upset the odds in the final. East Kerry have plenty of options in terms of markers. Jack Sherwood is the most experienced head in that full back line and he would be up to the task, as would Glenflesk corner back Chris O’Donoghue who has been a very consistent defender for East Kerry over the course of the 2019 and 2020 championships. From a neutral’s point of view, you would hope that O’Grady is at his influential best and that he and his supporting cast give the champions a right good rattle. It is a tall order, however, and with a
63
hungry David Clifford back in the starting line-up after serving his one-match suspension, one suspects that Jerry O’Sullivan’s side will be that little bit too strong for their divisional rivals. Verdict: East Kerry by four.
EAST KERRY (POSSIBLE): Shane Ryan (Rathmore); Niall Donohue (Firies), Jack Sherwood (Firies), Chris O’Donoghue (Glenflesk); Shane Cronin (Spa), Dan O’Donoghue (Spa), Paul Murphy (Rathmore); Mark Ryan (Rathmore), Ronan Buckley (Listry); Dara Moynihan (Spa), Paudie Clifford (Fossa), Brendan O’Keeffe (Rathmore); David Clifford (Fossa), Darragh Roche (Glenflesk), Evan Cronin (Spa). MID KERRY (POSSIBLE): Stephen Cahillane (Keel); Jack Brosnan (Glenbeigh-Glencar), Pa Wrenn (Milltown-Castlemaine), David Mangan (Laune Rangers); Peter Crowley (Laune Rangers), Mike Breen (Beaufort), Pa Kilkenny (Glenbeigh-Glencar); Ronan Murphy (Beaufort); David Roche (Milltown-Castlemaine), Fiachra Clifford (Laune Rangers), Ciarán Kennedy (Beaufort); Gavan O’Grady (Glenbeigh-Glencar), Liam Carey (Beaufort), Darran O’Sullivan (Glenbeigh-Glencar).

The proud history of the East Kerry Board Ahead of tomorrow’s county final, Eamonn Fitzgerald charts the long and storied history of the East Kerry Board
East Kerry and Mid Kerry will clash in the Kerry SFC final at Austin Stack Park, Tralee on Saturday, with very few people there as spectators. I bet Mike Allen will get in to see his club man, Jack Sherwood, play. Mike hasn’t missed a county final for many decades. However, next best thing for most is live
streaming. I expect East Kerry, the reigning champions, to retain their title, but first for the benefit of On the Ball readers let’s take a brief look at the East Kerry Board. It was founded in 1925, long after the founding of the GAA in Thurles 1884.

25.9.2020 A report in the Cork Examiner dated April 21, 1874 reported on ‘Killarney Football Sunday Evening’. It was an account of a match between the town side and the country boys from the present Flesk Bridge area on the Muckross side. There were also reports of football being played not alone in Killarney but also in its hinterland, including Kilcummin, Ballyhar, Firies and wherever. No organised clubs, as yet. Dr Crokes were quick off the mark, founded in 1886. Kilcummin came in 1910 and others followed, such as the Legion in 1929.
East Kerry were so strong in 1971 that the GAA stopped all divisional board teams from playing in the All-Ireland Club Championship thereafter.
STREET LEAGUES
The War of Independence up to 1922 and the Civil War of 1922-1923 resulted in nonstop postponements. Young people were starved for action, so the Dr Crokes club decided on October 18, 1924 to initiate an inter-street league tournament for Killarney. The teams were College Street, High Street, New Street (the Boys Below the Bridge) and Main Street. They drew great crowds and rivalry was intense, but what about the players from the surrounding districts? Enter the East Kerry Board, who held their first meeting in 1925. It was attended by Dr Crokes, Currow, Farranfore, Firies, Headford, Kenmare, Kilcummin and Killorglin. The first chairman of the EKB was Dick Fitzgerald and the secretary was Paul Russell. This duo, legendary Kerry All-Ireland winners and skilful Dr Crokes players, got the board off to a great start. The EKB has been blessed with high calibre officers through the tears right down to today with Johnny Brosnan (chairman) and Noel Kennedy (secretary). In my view the EKB officers played an essential part in the East Kerry team winning eight Kerry SFC titles to date. (On Sunday I expect them to make it nine.) East Kerry didn’t win their first title until 1965. Backboned by Kerry stars Tom Long, Johnny Culloty, Mick Gleeson and Donie O’Sullivan, they were captained by Donal Socky Lynch, as good a cor-

ner back as any goalkeeper would wish for. Slight in stature, he was as tough as nails and a practitioner of the “thou shalt not pass” doctrine. He had the uncanny knack of defending without fouling. For good measure, East Kerry won the Kerry Minor Championship in 1965, captained by Tom O'Keeffe of Gneeveguilla. Then came the three in a row of 1968-70, and greater things were to come. They had great players but they also had the splendid organisational skills of EKB officers Brendan Walshe (chairman) and Denis Fenton (secretary), both now dead, God rest them both. And then there was Donie Sheahan, who trained the three-in-a-row team and the winning All-Ireland Club side in 1971. No need or indeed hints of having coaches, managers, physios, video analysts and the myriad of overloaded others involved with the modern teams. Donie combined the lot in one. His game plan was simple. Win the ball, kick (not hand pass) the ball to your best placed teammate and make every post a winner. Take the goals and the points will come. That’s what happened in 1971, when East Kerry led by Mick Gleeson, an inspiring captain, and a team of great players beat Bryansford, the county Down champions. Brendan Walshe and Denis Fenton were happy campers in Croke Park that day. It’s great to see Donie Sheahan still as exuberant as ever in his 94th year. He was born the same day as the Queen of England. Stop there. They never met.
DIVISIONAL TEAMS
1971 was the first year of the All-Ireland Club competition. East Kerry were so strong that the GAA stopped all divisional board teams from playing
in the All-Ireland Club Championship thereafter. That is why the Kerry Club Championship run in recent weeks is so important as the club winners will go on to Munster and hopefully the All-Ireland Club series. COVID -19 will not allow that privilege this year. Thanks to Seán Kelly the intermediate and junior clubs also have their chances of a day of glory in Croke Park. Back to East Kerry and after the great day in Croker they made little progress until 1997, 1998 and 1999, another three-in-a-row, powered by county stars such as Séamus Moynihan, John Crowley and Donal Daly. Nothing then until last year when they beat Dr Crokes in the final. That makes it eight and I expect them to make it nine tomorrow. Note the final is on tomorrow, Saturday, not Sunday, the usual day for finals. Throw-in is at 7pm. If East Kerry are allowed the same composition of clubs next year they will be even stronger still, with Kilcummin joining them as they were relegated recently when they lost to Templenoe. Imagine Jerry O’Sullivan spoiled for choice. Go no further than your No. 1. Who will be chosen as goalkeeper 2021, Shane Ryan the present Kerry senior netminder, or Brendan Kealy, the former Kerry goalie? That’s a nice dilemma for any manager. Of course, you could pick Shane Ryan in a variety of positions outfield, but…
FORWARDS
I believe East Kerry will win tomorrow, mainly because they have the best set of forwards in the county. In the semi-final versus St Brendan’s they had to go without David Clifford, their talisman, who was out on suspension. Dara Moynihan, Darragh Roche and Evan Cronin stepped into the breach to show that this is not a one-man team. Full credit must go to East Kerry’s midfield, where
Kerry players Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor were expected to rule the roost. They didn’t and with Liam Kearney expected to be back i lár an ghoirt for East Kerry, there will be more ball going in directly to the full forward line, or else worked in by Paudie Clifford, who will be wearing the No. 11 geansaí. When he drives forward at pace Mid Kerry will need to stop him early on.
MID KERRY
Mid Kerry have a good half back line with Mike Breen and Pa Kilkenny very prominent against Dr Cokes. They can also break forward and hit Mid Kerry’s ace forward Gavan O’Grady. He is their chief scorer, but I’ve no doubt Jerry O’Sullivan will have a tactic to negative this proficient scorer. Will he sacrifice Jack Sherwood to do the marking job on O’Grady, at the expense of playing his own game? Sherwood has been outstanding in this campaign. Putting Kerry star Paul Murphy on him would be counterproductive. It would stifle his own game and those piercing runs in to attack. I don’t underestimate Mid Kerry. In their semi-final they rattled in two goals within 90 seconds, had to overcome a fourpoint deficit in extra time and came back from the brink of defeat at the death with an opportunist goal from who else but Gavan O’Grady. Take note of Mid Kerry’s Jackie Brosnan. He had a great semi-final versus Dr Crokes and there is a Killarney connection. His father Donal was a nippy forward with the Legion for many years. Donal’s father was Jackie from New Street, hence the promising grandchild Jackie.
TEDDY BOWLER
No doubt local man Teddy Bowler will be hoping for a Mid Kerry win. He was a sterling full back in 1967 when they first won it, defeating West Kerry 0-12 to 2-4. They were beaten by East Kerry in 1965, 0-10 to 0-4 after a replay. Their last win came in 2008 so it has been a long wait for Mid Kerry, but I feel they will have to wait another year. I predict an East Kerry win by five points or so.

Double delight for Dr Crokes Senior ladies and hurlers clinch county titles There was cause for double celebrations for Dr Crokes this past weekend as both their senior ladies footballers and senior men’s hurlers claimed county titles in their respective grades. The ladies came out just the right side of a barnstorming Junior A Championship final against MKL Gaels in the Fitzgerald Stadium, goals from Julie Delaney, Niamh Stack, Rheanne O’Shea (two), Jade Potts and Marian O’Callaghan proving crucial as they ran out 6-19 to 5-20 winners. MKL started well but Crokes rallied to lead by six at the interval. Any notions the Killarney team might have had that the job was done were quickly thrown out the window at the start of the second as the Gaels racked up 2-4 without reply, before O’Callaghan’s goal steadied the ship at just the right time. The Milltown-Castlemaine/Keel/Listry amalgamation still led by four with time running out, however, and it took a point by Kate Stack and a last-gasp goal by O’Shea to force extra time. The Crokes managed to push on in overtime and in the end they were good value for their two-point win. Caoimhín O'Donoghue, Mark Cooper, Jason Stack and Catherine Keogh will now lead their charges into the Munster Championship, where they will face the Clare champions on the weekend of October 3/4.
DR CROKES LADIES: Jessica Leahy; Holly Power, Kayleigh Cronin (capt), Caoilinn O'Donoghue; Treasa O'Sullivan (0-1), Ava Doherty, Lillie Foley; Julie De-
laney (1-1), Siobhán Burns (0-2); Niamh Stack (1-0), Rheanne O'Shea (2-4), Ava Sheehan; Kate Stack (0-08, 6f), Jade Potts (1-0), Emma Dineen (0-02); Subs: Marian O'Callaghan (1-1), Sarah McMahon, Megan Graham, Aoife Fleming, Liz Moloney, Aoife Kelliher, Lyselle O'Shea, Ellen Moloney. It was a momentous day, too, for the Dr Crokes senior hurlers as they bridged 19year gap to win the club’s third ever Kerry Intermediate Hurling Championship. Michael Lenihan (1-9) was the scorer-inchief for the club from Lewis Road as they defeated Tralee Parnell’s by 2-15 to 0-14 in Austin Stack Park. It was a close enough encounter but bainisteoir John Lenihan and his backroom team will be delighted with the manner in which the Crokes came good in the end. Jack Lenihan’s timely second-half goal sent the Killarney side on their way and Tom Doyle, wearing 15, played his part by scoring three points as the Crokes saw off Parnells, who were playing in their first county final since 1924. Captain Mike Milner lifted the trophy for the Black and Amber hurlers on what was a landmark day for the Crokes.
DR CROKES HURLERS: Conor Bohane; Patrick Crehan, Brendan McMahon, Kevin Landers; Colm Ó Cuív, Mike Milner (capt), Michael Horgan; Jack Lenihan (1-0) Shane Lyne; Rob Ryan, Mark Heffernan (0-1), Aaron Murphy (0-1); Richie Farrissey (0-1) Michael Lenihan (1-9), Tom Doyle (0-3). Subs used: Chris Doncel, Rory Waters, Dara Tangney, Cathal White.

Around the Grounds: Weekly Round-Up MEK TO PLAY LISTOWEL IN U13 FINAL The battle for the runners-up spot in the Girls U13 Premier, delayed due to the shut-down, will be between MEK Galaxy and Listowel Celtic. MEK booked their place after a 2-0 away win at Killarney Celtic with Orla Barrett and Sarah Fitzgerald getting the goals for the Mid and East Kerry side who also had big performances from Kate Clifford and Maria Griffin. For Killarney Celtic Áine O’Sullivan, Abbie Finnan and Emma O’Brien were the best on the night. BALLYHAR BEAT GALAXY IN GOAL-FEST This U12 Premier clash at Murt Scott Park was certainly an entertaining one with the home side Ballyhar Dynamos defeating MEK Galaxy 10-5. Donnacha Lynch and Conor Edwards both hit hat-tricks for Dynamos with David Downes getting and Issac Vickers and Daniel Cronin bagging one each. Leo Allan (four) and Conor
Hughes replied for MEK. HOME WINS IN THE U13 PREMIER There were home wins in the three games in the U13 Premier. In the Tralee derby, Tralee Dynamos were 5-3 winners at home to the Park. Dynamos’ Christy Boy Burke had a good day, hitting four of his side’s five with Alex Tuohy getting the fifth. Brian Heaphy got two for Park with Michael Quirke also chipping in with one. Killarney Athletic were a little too strong for Killorglin in Woodlawn with the goals for the winners coming from Szymon Jasinski (three), Gracjan Pawlak (two), Bryan O’Connor, Liam O’Brien and Mark O’Connell. MEK Galaxy scored two in each half without reply in their 4-0 home win over Listowel Celtic. Kevin Coffey (two), Jack Hallissey and an OG gave MEK the win. Dr Crokes Intermediate Hurling County Champions 2020.
Kerry County Intermediate Hurling title comes to Dr Crokes Dr Crokes
2-15 | Tralee Parnells
0-14
They say that “Great things can happen to those that work hard and never give up”. Well that’s exactly what transpired in a sundrenched Austin Stack Park on Sunday last, when Dr Crokes bridged a 19 year gap to become the County Intermediate Hurling Champions 2020. | By John Lenihan This was a sweet victory for this Killarney side over the newly reformed Tralee Parnells side but it was fully deserved after a hard fought game. Dr Crokes started the game very well with the lively and youthful corner forward, Tom Doyle getting 2 points within the first three minutes. This was followed by further points from Mark Heffernan and Richie Farrissey. However, Tralee Parnells showed some fighting spirit and stood up to the challenge with points from their impressive centre-forward Darragh Reen and wing forward Gearoid O’Doherty. Dr Crokes responded though with further points from full-forward Michael Lenihan and the hard-working Aaron Murphy. The score at the end of the first quarter was Dr Crokes 0-6 to Tralee Parnells 0-4. On the restart, Dr Crokes edged ahead again with further points from Michael Lenihan, Mark Heffernan and mid-fielder Jack Lenihan. Again Tralee Parnells responded with long range points from Cathal Dunne and Gearoid O’Doherty. At half-time, Dr Crokes lead by the bare minimum 0-9 to 0-8 and they knew they were in a battle. The introduction of dual player Chris Doncel made an immediate impact as his speed caused havoc in the Tralee’s side defence. This quarter was significant in that Dr Crokes created four goal chances with some fantastic forward play but found the Tralee Parnells keeper in spectacular form making four excellent saves.
disheartened after those misses and showed fantastic character and worked extremely hard to stop the tide. They were rewarded when just before the final water-break, Colm O’Cuiv sent in a high ball to full-forward Michael Lenihan who soared in the air to catch the sliotar and turned his man on the left and finished impressively to the net. It was a very significant score as it brought Dr Crokes back in the match again. However, Tralee Parnells were not finished yet and again showed tremendous fighting spirit to level the game. With only 10 minutes to go, mid-fielder Jack Lenihan ran at the Tralee defence to score a killer goal that put Dr Crokes ahead. This ended Tralee Parnells as Dr Crokes finished the game very strongly with Michael Lenihan adding on another 5 points (3 from frees and 1 65). Dr Crokes won this game by 7 points in the end and fully deserved this victory for their never say die attitude and will to win. New goalkeeper Conor Bohane was a
safe pair of hands in goal and his experience with accurate puck-outs was significant. Brendan McMahon at full-back was very solid all through and stood up to every challenge that came his way. Both corner-backs Patrick Crehan and Kevin Landers were tight-marking and kept a tight rein over the Tralee forwards. Mike Milner Captain was a tower of strength at centre-back and was ably assisted by his two wing-backs Colm O’Cuiv and Michael Horgan. The defence in general stood very solid and were well tested by a lively Tralee forward line. They say that goals win matches and great credit must go to the Dr Crokes defence who limited the Tralee goal chances to two all through the game. On both occasions, these threats were nullified by Brendan McMahon at full-back.
BATTLE
Mid-fielders Jack Lenihan and Shane Lyne worked tirelessly all through and eventually won their battle. Jack Lenihan contributed 1-1 and it was his killer goal with about eight minutes to go that really won the game for Dr Crokes and the award of Man of the Match. Aaron Murphy at wing forward put in a massive work rate all through and both Mark Heffernan (0-1) and Rob Ryan worked tirelessly also. The real difference in these two sides
were the inside forwards though Dr Crokes’s inside three of Tom Doyle with 0-2 points, Michael Lenihan with 1-9 and Richie Farrissey 0-1 worked very well together and took their scores at vital times during the game. All the players introduced from the bench, Chris Doncel, Mike O’Keeffe, Rory Water and Cathal White also contributed significantly to this win. This was real team effort and the celebrations that followed showed how much it meant to the whole panel of players. The full panel of 30 deserve great credit for the hard work and dedication to the cause this year. Special mention to Michael Owen Buckley, the consistent wing-back who missed the final after sustaining a broken thumb in the semi-final win over Kilmoyley. Special mention to all the Management Team of John Lenihan, Timmy Hourigan, Niall Keogh, Patrick Landers, Jamie Lenihan, Kieran Crehan and Dan Kelleher for their time and effort during the year. Thanks to Brendan Keogh (Logistics) and Paul Downey our Hurling Officer also. Eddie Murphy (Coach) played a significant role in shaping and directing this team this year and you could see his stamp written all over Dr Crokes play. Well done to all involved. Enjoy the celebrations.

Spurs pair Son and Kane do the business in Gameweek 2 Tottenham Hotspur attackers Son Heung-min and Harry Kane were the big scorers in Gameweek 2 as the dynamic duo combined for 45 points in Spurs’ 5-2 win over Southampton. Son bagged four goals in the win and remarkably all four were assisted by England striker Harry Kane, who also found the target himself. Kane becomes just the seventh player to lay on four assists in a single Premier League match, after Emmanuel Adebayor (Spurs), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Dennis Bergkamp (Arsenal), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), Dusan Tadic (Southampton) and Jose Antonio Reyes (Arsenal). He is also the first player to set up the same teammate for four goals in one match in the Premier League era. Kane’s performance meant that Son managed to miss out on the three-point bonus awarded to the player of the game, despite finding the back of the net on four occasions. The South Korean picked up two points instead to leave him on 24 as the Englishmen got the three-pointer to add to his 18-point haul. Players in the Killarney Advertiser League

If you’re new to the game and you’re looking to join up for Gameweek 3, you will start at a slight disadvantage but with 36 weeks to go in the season, there’s plenty of time to catch up. To join, simply visit fantasy.premierleague.com or visit the app, go to ‘join leagues’ and enter the code 7pwwg6. Every month the top-scoring manager will pick up a €50 voucher for Brian James and the overall winner at the end of the season will walk away with a voucher for €250. S mith flies the Kerry flag in England
Killarney native Mick Smith will have the unique distinction of being the first Kerryman to compete on a rally as a driver since February this year. High Streetborn Smith, the long-serving chairman of London Irish Motor Club, has secured an entry for Sunday’s CAR-nival Rally in Oxfordshire. It is one of the first rally events to run in England since COVID-19 restrictions were relaxed in that country. Several Kerry co-drivers have competed internationally in recent weeks and other competitors have driven in races or sprints on two and four wheels. The last time Kerry rally drivers were behind the wheel was on the Birr Rally in February. Smith will use the same Chrysler Avenger that he drove on last November’s Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally. |
C oyne crashes in Cheshire
Kevin Coyne crashed out of his two races in the HEL Performance British Junior
Championship in Oulton Park, Cheshire, making it a weekend to forget for the Farranfore-based Kawasaki rider. Coyne will contest the penultimate round of the series at Donington Park on October 2-4 but has elected to skip the season finale at Brands Hatch on October 16-18. |
G riffin takes positives from Mondello
John Griffin took some positives from a difficult Dunlop Masters Superbike Championship meeting at Mondello Park last weekend. The Ahern’s BMW sponsored rider qualified on pole for the Superbike Cup races and set a personal best time of 57.3 seconds over the Mondello National track. He crashed out of race one and took fifth in his second race on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, he took fourth after missing a gear off the start-line and decided to call it a day before the final race of the meeting after he discovered a faulty gear lever on his BMW RR1000.

Muckross Rowing Club OFFSHORE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Best of luck to our crews competing in the Irish Offshore Rowing Championships in Portmagee this weekend. We have the unique honour of being the only club with two crews entered in the Mens Quad race, as rowers from our Masters Mens group take on the waves of the Kerry coast. We are also set to have representation in the Mens Solo and Double events. It will be an unusual regatta with no spectators as part of the COVID-19 restrictions, but it is fantastic to have some competition following the cancellation of the larger summer regattas. NEW SEASON: Last weekend, we were able to kick start our new rowing season 2020/21 in fine weather. We are trialling a new timetable as group sizes will remain limited to 15. All members are asked to strictly adhere to the times as communicated. There is likely to be changes ahead for some groups as we tweak the schedule to best suit the demands on coaching time and equipment. For the coming weekends, activity will be limited to existing members only. It is hoped to have beginner sessions once additional numbers can be safely accommodated within the current restrictions.

Better be safe than sorry. Look out for news on the juvenile road races, we are hoping to go ahead with these on October Bank Holiday at 12 noon. We offer our condolences both to his family as well as the Gleneagle club. The club have decided to make a donation to the Pallative Care Unit in University Hospital Kerry from our recent Ricky Kelly event following John’s passing.
Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club ROYAL OAK: Last Sunday the club held its annual competition on Lough Lein, fishing for the Royal Oak Cup. Coming off the lake that evening, the common thread in conversations was the fantas-
71
tically sunny weather and the majestic scenery that we are gifted to have around us while fishing. The cup has been successfully defended this year by Anthony Griffin, no mean feat given the high turnout for the competition. The top five anglers on the day were: 1st Anthony Griffin, 2nd Liam Buckley, 3rd John O’Callaghan Jnr, 4th Paul Lawton, 5th Billy O’Dea. Heaviest trout was caught by John O Callaghan Jnr. The annual best boat Paddy O’Kelly Cup goes to the boat of Anthony Griffin and Liam Buckley. TOM BAMBURY: Our final competition for the year, The Tom Bambury Memorial Trophy, will be fished for on Sunday, October 4. This competition as well as the last chance in the battle for angler of the year, also has a great uplift to it as all entry fees are donated to St Francis School in Beaufort, a most worthy cause and for these reasons we look forward to seeing as many members as possibly fishing on the day.
Killarney Badminton Club JOHN: Killarney Badminton Club would like to say a very sad farewell to John O’Halloran who passed away this week. John, who was President of the club, was an active member of the club for more than 30 years. He generously gave time coaching and mentoring players as well as representing the club at county level. He was an inspiration to us all and will be very sadly missed. The club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to all the O’Halloran family.
