An Bord Pleanála has refused planning permission for a large scale development on Port Road - as it could potentially impact the Lesser Horseshoe Bats. Portal Asset Holdings wanted to build 228 residential units consisting of 76 houses and 152 apartments, crèche and all associated site works between Port Road and St Margaret’s Road.

“The new building has been designed with the clients we service core and central in terms of their individual needs," Centre Director, Vera O’Leary, said, outlining the significance of this devel"Theopment.proposed facility will offer our professional and dedicated team of counsellors and support team a permanent home where we can continue to provide safe, confidential and free counselling to survivors of all types of sexual violence and support for non-abusing partners, parents, relatives and friends. This is a milestone moment for the centre, with a stated ambition of ours to develop such a facility for many years.”

Large-scale development refused over risk to bats

The proposal was met with widespread opposition from residents in the area and was referred to the planning board. A total of 50 observations were submitted to An Bord Pleanála. A decision was taken to refuse the application after concerns were raised about local wildlife habitats.

“Having regard to the proximity of the subject site to the Killarney National Park, MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Caragh River Catchment candidate Special Area of Conservation it is considered that the proposed development may result in increased artificial lighting generated at both the construction and operational phases of the development and that may impact on Lesser Horseshoe Bats that commute along routes to the west of the Port Road/Deenagh River. The submitted Appropriate Assessment Screening does not provide sufficient scientific reasoning to clearly eliminate the likelihood of significant adverse effects,” said Planning Inspector Paul O’Brien.

Plans underway for new Ross Road counselling centre

Chairperson of the Board of Management of the Centre, Brid Mc Elligott in welcoming this development also acknowledged the kindness of the Clarke “Onfamily.behalf of all stakeholders involved with the centre I would like to acknowledge the generosity and kindness of the Clarke family, in particular Matt Clarke who has championed this proposed development from the outset. Without this philanthropic gesture realising our own building would not have been possible. In supporting our clients and their families on their journey of recovery, it will massively assist our efforts when we can operate from a client tailored, bespoke facility.”

NEW CENTRE: Vera O'Leary, Director of the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, says planning is being sought to build a bespoke centre on the Ross Road.

It's hoped that the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre will get a new permanent home on the Ross Road after a site was generously donated by a local family. The Kerry charity is now seeking planning permission to develop a bespoke counselling centre in Reen on the Ross Road, after the donation was made by the Clarke family. The construction of a centre like the one planned has been a long-term ambition of the organisation, the year the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre celebrates 30 years in existence. The centre now awaits the decision of the planning authority and if granted, the build would take approximately 14 months to complete. Monies to finance the development will be sourced from State funds and charitable donations. The Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre will also continue to deliver services from Tralee and other outreach locations as needed.

AWARD: Seamus O'Donoghue from Mill Road has been sleeted as the Killarney London Person of the Year.

Seamus lived in Ealing Broadway and was a bus conductor and driver with Transport for London between 1964 and 1967. He worked alongside his friend and fellow Spa GAA club member, the late Paudie O’Sullivan.

The 23-year-old played a starring role in UL GAA’s Sigerson Cup Final run, claimed the Higher Education Rising Star Footballer of the Year Award, and was Man of the Match in the All-Ireland Football Final this year. A Silver Scholarship recipient at UL, David has been in the UL Sports Scholarships Academy for the past two years, allowing him access to the high-performance gym to keep up his demanding sporting regime while taking the course. The Kerry star is among almost 3,300 new graduates being conferred at UL over five days of the 2022 Autumn Conferring Ceremonies this week.

92 commercial premises unoccupied in Killarney No arrest in murder case

Seamus only learned that he had been selected as this year’s winner.

“It was a tremendous surprise, I said there is surely some more deserving than me but [organiser] Donal Grady told me that a committee had decided. I hope to meet many friends there on the night,” he added. “After I came home I used to travel back for the reunion almost every year. Donal said I was such a great support over the years that I should get it – I made a lot of friends at the reunion over the years and I am looking forward to meeting them all again although some have passed on including Paudie."

The report examined the commercial vacancy rates among a sample of 80 towns across the country in June 2022. The commercial vacancy rate in Kerry has increased to 11.7% the 12 months to Q2 2022 and of the towns in Kerry analysed, Listowel had the highest commercial vacancy rate in Q2 2022 at 21.6%, while Killarney had the lowest at 11.1%.

Investigating officers confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that Burns was refused bail as there is no place available to accommodate the homeless man. Killarney Gardai have yet to make any arrest in relation to last week’s gruesome murder where Mrs Burns was found in her Ardshanavooley home. Miriam Burns’ Funeral Mass took place at St Mary's Cathedral on Sunday afternoon followed by private cremation. The Killarney Advertiser understands that detectives have seized hard drives from private computers in the estate as they contain vital CCTV data that could help solve the crime. Anyone with information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 6671160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

The car was later discovered in Northern Ireland and Burns is also accused of driving without paying for fuel at a garage in County Dublin around the same time.

In her conferring address, Professor Mey has told the new UL graduates that the ceremonies are “a hugely important part of your learning journey”. “As you step out into the world as our ambassadors by joining the more than 118,000 alumni around the world, we want you to be proud of your institution.”

Seamus honoured to be named London Killarney Person of the Year

The Kerry GAA star forward was conferred with a Masters in PE Teaching at UL, among thousands of students receiving their parchments this week.

A total of 92 commercial premises in Killarney are vacant according to the latest GeoDirectory Commercial Buildings Report, issued yesterday (Thursday).

By Sean Moriarty

“I remember driving a bus into Hounslow Bus Garage one day and Paudie was there in another bus right beside me, I had not seen him for years at that point but were great friends again after that,” Seamus told the Killarney Advertiser.

“The latest GeoDirectory Commercial Buildings Report highlights a marginal but continued rise in commercial vacancy rates across Ireland. At 13.9%, the national commercial vacancy rate in Q2 2022 was the highest recorded by GeoDirectory since we started compiling these reports in 2013. The past two and a half years have proved to be difficult for businesses to navigate, thanks to the impact of COVID-19 restrictions followed by rising inflation and energy costs,” Dara Keogh, Chief Executive of GeoDirectory, said.

On Monday, the first batch of students in Ireland to graduate with Masters level apprenticeships were conferred, with Minister of State for Skills and Further Education Niall Collins TD present to meet and congratulate them.

“I couldn’t recommend it [the course] enough in terms of the time we were in college and the work placements that we had," David said. "The lecturers and the sports department were very accommodating and friendly, especially in helping me to balance my studies and our Sigerson Cup Final run. Coming up to Limerick was a bit daunting at first, but the sports facilities [at UL] alone are unbelievable.”

So, this week, Dublin Airport opened a new runway.

"This is not a good situation for our town as the bottles left there are unsightly and dangerous if broken. I would understand if the Bring Banks had filled up in one day but this was not the case as they were close to full on Saturday. Surely they can be emptied on Fridays in anticipation of a busy weekend?

"I looked at the Kerry County Council website for guidance and it stipulated that if the bins are full, the public should not deposit them beside the bin. This is practical in my opinion as people cannot drop glass in their recycling bins or landfill and they may have travelled many miles to the Bring Bank in the first place. I called the environmental hotline to report the full Bring Bank but I got an automated answering machine and could only leave a "Surelymessage.our local authority could be more proactive regarding this and should be encouraging recycling at every turn," he "Thankfullysaid. there are plans to set up a deposit scheme for containers as part of the Green Party Circular Economy Bill, but in the meantime our local authority has to step up to the plate." Some of the committee members of the Killarney Musical Society, Sorcha O'Connor, Ilona McCubbrey, Jack Brosnan, Linda O'Donoghue, Bríd O'Callaghan and Phil Spillane, between them have 119 years experience in the local group, and are looking forward to their launch night next week.

It doesn't matter if you can't act or sing - or are a little shy - as there's plenty of behind the scenes jobs available for the Killarney Musical Society's 2023 production.

Diarmaid Griffin said that on Saturday last he dropped off a few glass bottles and jars at the Beech Road Bring Bank but that the clear glass receptacle was very close to full but managed to just about fit his containers in for recycling. "On Sunday evening the brown and clear glass receptacles were full and the glass jars and bottles were placed in front of the bins,' he said.

A Green Party Representative for Killarney has said that the glass recycling Bring Banks which became full over weekend are "unsightly and dangerous if broken".

Our journalist SEAN MORIARTY shares his thoughts on the week's news Hildegard Naughten, the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, was full of gushing praise for the new "Thedevelopment.newrunway is a crucial piece of infrastructure which will enable Dublin Airport to expand and provide the necessary capacity to connect key existing and emerging global markets," she said. Her comments were echoed by Ryanair chief executive Eddie Wilson who "Thissaid: new second runway capacity will enable Ryanair to operate more flights to and from Dublin Airport, keeping air fares low, delivering tourism growth, all on new aircraft, which carry more passengers.”

By Michelle Crean

If you've always wanted to get involved but are stage shy, Linda says that now is the time to involved.

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that expanding capacity at Dublin Airport is not a good thing and will only add to the already woeful security and facility situation at an airport that is already bursting at the Theseams.new runway cost a staggering €320m to Meanwhilebuild.the regional airports are getting little or no Government support. One of the most obvious ways to reduce overcrowding at Dublin Airport is to increase the number of flights to and from regional airports. People living in Kerry almost drive past the entrance to Kerry and Shannon Airports to get to Dublin. They have to run the gauntlet of the M50 and end up parking in remote car parks that are one hour from the security gates. It is time end the monopoly that the Dublin Airport Authority (daa) has on air travel in this country. Imagine what €320m could do if it was spread evenly between Kerry, Cork, Shannon and Knock Airports. But this week’s announcement, regardless of what Minister Naughten or Ryanair say, is not good news.

Jamie started at 3pm on Saturday with his backup team by cycling the Ring of Kerry, climbing Carrauntoohil in the dark by torchlight, then cycling on to Cahersiveen in the dark and then climbing Cnoc na dTobar to see the sun rise. He then joined the rest of the 54321 Challenge team on the Sunday morning to complete the fourth day to finish in Killorglin. Jamie decided to fundraise specifically for Skellig Stars Athletics Club which is very close to his heart. The 54321 Challenge started 10 years ago with a team of five people over four days, completing three cycles, and climbing two mountains for one cause – a local Testamentcharity. to the popularity of the event is the fact that over 80% of this year’s participants had completed the challenge previously over the first nine years; with some who have not missed a year since its commencement in 2013. But as always the new participants added a new lease of life and added to the 54321 Challenge experience, which is predominately all about people who are doing it, those supporting them and the people involved in the charities we are trying to raise much needed funds to support.

HeartBeat Killarney’s Annual General Meeting will take a different format this year after the group learned a more efficient way of doing things during the COVID-19 lockdowns. When the pandemic hit HeartBeat had to make a lot of changes so it could meet health and safety conditions to allow the AGM to happen.

“They are expected to read all the various reports beforehand. This will avoid time perusing reports in depth and allow us to deal with matters arising from any report quickly and efficiently,” added ApplicationsBilly. for AGM attendance must be made to HeartBeat Killarney committee members before September 15. Meanwhile, the organisation's monthly meetings and wellness sessions continue at the Parish Hall. Guest speaker at the August 30 meeting will be Noreen Tobin who specialises Qi Gong Wellness - a system of body-posture and movement, breathing, and meditation which improves overall quality of life by enhancing mental and physical health, mobility, balance, memory focus and concentration, cardiovascular and respiratory health, immune system, stress, anxiety and sleep.

More than 200 spectators attended the Ukrainian show at the ANAM Cul tural Centre and included songs, danc es, gymnastic numbers, a masterclass for children and a joint flash mob in blue and yellow clothes - the colours of the Ukrainian flag. Traditionally on this day, Ukrainians gather to celebrate liberation from many years of being part of an artifi cial entity - the Soviet Union under the domination of Russia - and the acqui sition of the status of an independent “Thisstate. is our first Independence Day outside Ukraine so we are delighted to invite our new Irish friends to share the celebration with us," organisers Natalia Krasnenkova, Yevhenia Omelchenko and Alevtyna Rutto said. Five violinists of the Yeroshovy sisters performed in front of the guests with a programme consisting of classical and Ukrainian works. The sisters brought instruments with them to Ireland and continue to practice their skills. “Independence Day for our family is a day of justice, a day of support for truth and honour. Ukraine exists, it is strong and beautiful, and indomita ble Ukrainians, thanks to their unity, will overcome everything and will not make old mistakes again. With our mu sic, we want to support people who are far from their homeland, who left the Motherland unprepared and against their will. Dear Ukrainians, feel at home on Independence Day. We will give you pieces of our hearts, our music, which was learned in Ukraine, because there is the best children's music education and many other best things in the world!” Alena Yershova said. The organisers of the concert had al ready put concerts together before Easter and as part of Ukrainian Day at K-FEST. All the concert participants are Ukrainians living in Killarney and Kerry. The organisers joked that now they need to organise an All-Ireland tour of Ukrainians talents. Niall Kelleher, Mayor of Killarney who visited the celebration said that the new experience of cooperation be tween Ukrainians and town hall gives excellent results. "Today we have a wonderful holiday, for which I want to thank all the partic ipants and the entire town hall team, thanks to whom it was possible."

The good news is that now in 2022 all local authorities have new application forms with options to include and register accessibility needs. So there has never been a better time to encourage your loved one to think about their future, the life they want to lead and where they want to live as they get older. Here are five steps to get started to support your loved one begin their journey.

1. Get the application form: you need to contact your local authority/county council housing department and get the social housing application form. Irish Wheelchair Association has a great online section as part of our ‘Think Ahead Think Housing’ campaign with direct links to all the local authority’s individual application forms www.iwa.ie/services/accessiapply-now/.ble-housing/think-ahead-think-housing/

How to support your loved one to get a wheelchair accessible home

2. Get the medical form: There is a separate medical form (Disability and/or Medical Form HMD1) that needs to be filled in and also completed by two medical professionals who work with the applicant. You will possibly need to contact for example your GP, Public Health Nurse or Occupational Therapist and Social Worker for support with your application.

HOUSING: Terry O'Brien, says housing is a critical issue for a person with a disability but help is out there. As a parent or a sibling, sometimes it is hard to find the balance between encouragement and pressure when we are trying to get our loved ones to think about the future and where they will live as they get older.

On Tuesday September 13, they will hold their Kerry meeting in The Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee at 7.15pm. All bereaved parents from the Kerry area are welcome, regardless of the age their child died or circumstances of their death. There is no need to register, just arrive on the evening.

ing-support. Irish Wheelchair Association members should contact their local branch and ask for advice and support to make the application process easier. If you are a member of another disability organisation, contact them for support. Speak to as many people as you can along your journey for advice and information including your local TDs and councillors.

3. Ask for help, a lot: There are a number of people who have experience and can help you. Citizens Information Centres have a lot of detail and support about the process or look online www.citizensinformation.ie. The Housing Agency also has an easy guide to the application ing-information/applying-social-hous-https://www.housingagency.ie/hous-form

For information about Irish Wheelchair Association’s 'Think Ahead, Think Housing' campaign log onto www.iwa.ie/ thinkhousing.

September does and feels like the start of a new year; summer clothes are packed away, holidays have been taken, long evenings shorten and schoolbags reappear. For many, it is a new beginning – a new school term, the start of college, a new career to embark upon. But September can be a difficult month for bereaved parents. Many milestones are achieved over the months, many milestones their beloved child will never get to mark. Anam Cara, the only organisation of its kind in Ireland with services available to all bereaved parents, will resume their face to face meetings following a short break over the summer months.

26.08.202220 NEWS

5. Return the application form today! It is remarkable how many people nearly get their form completed but then delay or forget to post it away and leave all that effort sitting in a drawer. Support your family or friend to get the job finished when they have lost momentum and are discouraged by all the work. Recently I heard Yvonne, a member of Irish Wheelchair Association saying, “I actually never thought that it would be possible for me to live independently because I didn’t have the confidence and courage in myself… Look once you get into your home you get to actually have fun. And it’s only then that you actually relax and just realise... you kinda wonder why you waited so long to do something like this. So yeah definitely go for it.” Just keep going and finish the job together. You will be glad you did.

While working in Irish Wheelchair Association in Kerry, supporting families across the area, everyday I am meeting disabled people who are being underestimated by society and also left behind by the national housing crisis. Many don’t know where to go or how to start looking for their own home. But help is out there. I often meet parents who are so hopeful and enthusiastic about their son or daughter’s potential but the struggle for an independent life can seem out of reach for so many. Many people, not just parents, would like to support their child, sibling or friend to live independently and have their own home but don’t know where to start. The reality is that housing is a critical issue for a person with a disability. In my work across Kerry I regularly meet people who are living in homes that are unsuitable and sometimes even dangerous for their condition. I meet people who cannot figure out where they will live when their parents get older. And I meet parents who are struggling to care for their adult children and are worried about the Wefuture.know that in Ireland there is a housing shortage. But for a wheelchair user there is a housing absence, a complete lack of any wheelchair liveable housing anywhere. This is why social housing is so vital for people with disabilities, because there are no private rental options there for them at the moment. However, while local authorities are focusing heavily on building social housing, they are not yet delivering wheelchair liveable housing at the rates that our community needs. In 2021, Irish Wheelchair Association was part of a successful campaign to have ‘wheelchair liveable’ needs included as an option on social housing application forms. Before 2021 it had not even been possible for a disabled person to include their disability requirements in their local authority housing application. This is how far behind we were on accessible social housing in Ireland.

Support meetings return for bereaved parents

4. Cover all your needs: If you need personal assistance, a PA service, to live independently you need to make contact with your local HSE Disability Manager and begin that application process alongside your housing application process.

“While family and friends might be good at marking the major milestones – anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas – it’s important to understand that less obvious occasions can also be hugely triggering,” Service Manager for Anam Cara, Sharon Vard said. Did you just get your first job or have you recently returned to the workforce? You may also have recently arrived in Ireland and not know what to expect with regard to rates of payment. Sometimes people can be slow to question employers about payment rates especially younger people and students, who in the current climate are experiencing more and more difficulty in finding summer jobs and part-time work. When you start a job the amount you will be paid is generally agreed between you and your employer says Declan Canty, Information Officer with South Munster CIS who is based in Kerry. “So it is important to be aware that most employees are entitled to the National Minimum Wage. Your wages are the amount of pay you receive before any money has been deducted from it such as Tax, PRSI, USC etc.”

If you are unable to reach an agreement with your employer your next option available is to complete the online complaint form on the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) website. This form will give you two options from which you are only permitted to select one.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR TRAINING PLAN!

National Minimum Wage

The method for calculation is to divide your Gross Pay by the total number of hours you have worked. Your working hours will be set out in your contract of employment or a Statement of the Terms of your employment. When doing this calculation you should not include any premium for working overtime or for working on Saturdays or Sundays and Public Holidays. Declan advises that if you have any difficulty with this you can ask your employer for a written statement of your average rate of pay for any pay reference period within the last 12 months. The pay reference period is the time that the hours are worked over such as weekly fortnightly or monthly. What should I do if I am not getting the Minimum Wage? You can begin by discussing this with your employer. It is important to note however that there are different rates for certain sectors such as Cleaning and Security. Other workers not entitled to the Minimum Wage include those employed by close relatives such as a parent or a spouse, along with statutory apprenticeships. If your employer says that they cannot afford to pay you the Minimum Wage due to financial difficulty the Labour Court may exempt them from paying it for anything from three months to one year. The employer must apply to the Labour Court for the exemption and they must have the consent of the majority of their employees. Only one exemption can be allowed and it will only be granted for the full rate of the National Minimum Wage. As you may find it difficult to raise this issue with your employer Declan Canty from SMCIS said that it is important to be aware that you cannot be victimised in any way by asking to be paid the National Minimum Wages which you are entitled to. If you are dismissed for asking your employer for the Minimum Wage you are entitled to make a claim for unfair dismissal regardless of the length of time you have worked for your employer or the number of hours you have worked. How to make a complaint? If you are not getting the Minimum Wage you should first speak to your employer to see if the issue can be resolved.

What is the Minimum Wage?

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice -

Should you do the same exercises every day?

Being active is great - but what if you do the same exercises every single day - will that help you stay fit?

1. You can request an investigation by an inspector from the Workplace Relations Commission. The inspector will look into your claim that the National Minimum Wage is not being paid, or 2. You can refer a dispute to a WRC adjudicator. You can only do this after asking your employer for a statement outlining the calculation of the average hourly pay and you must refer the dispute within six months of receiving the statement.

Here’s the answer: If you have a fitness regime in place but always do the same thing, you’ll get some of the benefits of activity, but you won’t get all of them. With some adjustments, your hard work could create even greater results. For example, someone who runs three kilometres at the same pace every single day is going to be much better off than someone who isn’t active at all. Running has many benefits; physiological and psychological and works your cardiovascular (heart and lungs) system, and regular activity is great for maintaining your health. But the body adapts to the demands on it, and once it’s adapted to be able to run three kilometres at a certain pace, it doesn’t make any additional changes. You still burn calories, get your heart working and use your muscles, but you won’t get a lot fitter. You won’t continue to get faster or stronger. In training, we call this “hitting a plateau”. Improvements stop, and sometimes you might even slide backwards a little. To make further improvements, you need to change things to put new stresses on the body and force it to adapt. For example, you could run three kilometres in less time, you could run four kilometres, or you could do three one kilometre intervals at a very fast pace with rest between efforts. All these variations still involve running but would cause your body to make positive changes again. It’s the same thing with weight training. If you do dumbbell biceps curls for three sets of eight reps at 5kg every day, your body won’t change much. It has the capacity to do the work, so it doesn’t add more. But if you asked it for three sets of 10 reps, or to move 8kgs instead of 5kg, it would adapt to accomplish the effort. Your muscles would grow. So if changes to your routine are needed to keep making progress, how do you know what to change and when? That’s where a competent coach comes in. HOW A COACH CAN HELP First, you must get the right programme in place to start, and it should be based on your exact health and fitness goals. Some people just take a routine from a magazine or the Internet and do it over and over. Again, it’s great to get moving, but that routine won’t be perfect for you, and your needs will change. When we create programmes we find out exactly what people want to accomplish, and then we put an ideal plan Thentogether.we monitor progress, and we evaluate daily, weekly and monthly results. Because we’re experts, we can tell when you’re ready for a new challenge that will ensure you’re always moving forward. Programmes are constantly updated to ensure you’re training optiBeyondmally. physical adaptation, there’s also something else to consider: boredom. By including some variation in your programme, we’ll keep you interested and engaged. Running the same three kilometres every day on the same path can grow stale, and sometimes boredom makes people quit activities. But what if we had you do that three kilometres on a more rugged trail that challenges your balance and strength with obstacles and climbs? Or what if we had you stop running every 500m and perform 10 lunges? A good coach is always working to make sure a client is moving toward goals as quickly as possible while staying motivated.

Since the 1st of January 2022 the National Minimum wage is €10.50 per hour. This is the rate which should be paid to most employees over the age of 20 years. For younger age groups there are what are called sub-minimum rates, calculated as a percentage of the full rate. Those aged 19 years receive 90% or €9.45 per hour. For an 18-year-old this reduces to 80% or €8.40 per hour, and those aged under 18 receive 70% of the minimum rate which works out at €7.35 per hour. It is important to remember the Minimum Wage does not prevent your employer from paying you a higher rate. A minimum wage exists in Ireland since the introduction of the National Minimum Wage Act 2000 when it was just €5.58 per hour. Over the years it has been adjusted on 10 occasions and it applies to full-time, parttime, temporary and casual workers as well as seasonal employees. How do I know if I am getting the Minimum Wage?

The fashion was fierce and judges Anna Galvin, Grace Clifford and Marietta Doran had a tough challenge selecting 11 finalists each encompassed AYU’s ethos.

Originally from the Philippines, Jacy has been living in Ireland over 15 years and currently resides in Tralee. Jacy’s stunning look was a beautiful hot pink two piece from ASOS paired with a gold clutch bag and shoes, her headpiece was a stunning pink fascinator by Montgomo ry Millinery, which she borrowed for the occasion. Jacy told the judges how she felt the sleeves of the top reminded her of fashion from the Philippines, so she felt that she was wearing a bit of home!

4. How can their life be extended? The key is to keep the vehicle in the best possible condition. “It’s advisable to minimise the number of quick charges, because this prevents the battery temperature from rising too high,” he explains. “Keeping its charge level between 40% and 80% also helps extend the battery's life beyond the minimum warranty criteria.”

Once electric vehicles have reached 160,000km or after eight years, the battery still performs to around 80% of its “Thiscapacity.means that we may experience a shorter range in everyday use of the car and therefore, in the distance we can travel with it after a charge,” says Francesc. “But it doesn’t mean that the battery is no longer useful, as this 80% capacity can be used in other applications that require less power, such as static energy storage.” This new function ensures that a single battery can be reused to extend its life. 2. What’s the difference between an electric and a hybrid battery? The answer lies in their energy storage capacity. “In an electric vehicle, since it doesn’t have a combustion engine as in a hybrid, the battery needs to have more capacity to travel the same distance,” says the engineer. This means that it needs more cells. “The battery of a hybrid has around 100 cells, while that of an electric vehicle has around 300.”

3. How long does it last? “It depends on how people drive their car: the frequency of use, the temperatures it’s exposed to and the number of charge cycles. In the case of our vehicles, we can ensure a minimum of 160,000 kilometres or eight years of guaranteed service life thanks to the intensive tests we subject the batteries to.” The testing includes extreme climatic conditions and modes of use that continuously push the batteries to their limits.

26.08.2022 37MOTORING

1. What are batteries made of? “The technology we use in the Volkswagen Group is lithium-ion based, specifically with the chemical combination nickel, manganese and cobalt,” explains Francesc Sabaté, head of TCE. These elements form cells, which are the minimum energy storage units that facilitate charging. “The cells are grouped into modules and arranged in packs that, together with the control electronics, the cooling system, and the casings, create the complete battery that is ready to be assembled in the vehicle.”

Once students have viewed examina tion scripts and marking schemes for their subjects, there is the option to ap ply to appeal the results. Applications to appeal can be made through the CSSP from 9am on Saturday, Septem ber 10, up to 12pm on Monday the 12th.

The wait is almost over for Leaving Cert results

APPLICATIONS TO APPEAL

There is no doubt that the path to the Leaving Certifi cate has been challenging for the Class of 2022 but the end to that journey is in sight with results to be issued on Friday, September 2. Students will be able to access results online, through the Candidate Self Ser vice Portal (CSSP) from 10am and will also have the option of receiving them in school. To access results online you will need your examination number, CSSP password and PPS number. This is an extremely anxious time for students and parents. Leaving Certif icate results’ day is a significant mile stone, marking the end of secondary school and the beginning of the next part of the journey. It is important how ever to keep the results in perspective and remember that the results neither define you nor prevent you from re alising your potential in your chosen pathway after school. Where possible it can be a real comfort to have a parent/ guardian, sibling, relative or friend with you when getting the results as it is a day that is filled with lots of different emotions. When you receive your re sults, you will see the subject, level and grade achieved such as H1, H2, H3, 02, 03 and so on. You will not see actual percentages, the breakdown of marks or the points achieved. If you wish to calculate your points you can do so on the Careers Portal Leaving Cert CAO Points Calculator App, so it is a good idea to download that to your phone beforehand.

Once the results have been issued there are very important dates and deadlines which students must be aware of. From 12pm on Tuesday, September 6 all stu dents will get access to their examina tion data through the CSSP. This will include a detailed breakdown of marks in each subject, including each compo nent of the paper such as practicals, project work, orals and so on. You will then have the option to apply to view your examination scripts. Detailed marking schemes for each subject will also be made available to all students. The timeline to apply to view the script is very short. Leaving Certificate stu dents can apply online only via the CSSP from 5pm from Tuesday, Septem ber 6 until Wednesday, September 7 at 8pm while LCA students must apply by email. It is important to view exam scripts if you are considering appealing any subject results. The State Exami nations Commission (SEC) have stated that all deadlines are strict and final.

A detailed Candidate Information Guide to Results and Appeals will be emailed to all students before the re sults on Friday September 2. This will include information on which exami nations were corrected manually and which were corrected online. Scripts in subjects which were marked online will be available to view online between 9am on Saturday September 10 and 12pm on Sunday September 11. Scripts in subjects which were marked manu ally will be available for viewing in the schools. Students will be assigned to one of three sessions on Saturday Sep tember 10, 9am – 11am, 12pm – 2pm or 3pm – 5pm.

ACCESS TO EXAMINATION DATA AND VIEWING OF SCRIPTS

It is very important to look carefully at the scripts before applying as it is pos sible for students to be downgraded as well as upgraded on appeal. No date has been issued for the results of ap peal by the SEC, this will be confirmed once the number of applications to ap peal are known.

SECOND-CHANCE MATHS EXAM TO MEET CAO REQUIREMENTSCOURSE

Some HEIs offer students who have not received the required minimum grade in Maths for their chosen course, the opportunity to sit an alternative Maths exam. These exams usually take place in the week after the Leaving Cert re sults are issued. Details of the HEIs which run these exams can be found in the ‘Important Dates’ section of the CAO website and information on spe cific dates, exam structure and links to apply are available on the individual HEI

Aswebsites.wellas the timeline for results and appeals, the coming weeks will also see the beginning of the CAO offers with Round 1 offers out on September 8 at 2pm. This means that while you will find out results on Friday the 2nd, there is still an anxious wait to learn about what college places you are to be offered. The most important thing to reflect on coming up to the results is that there is not just one pathway open to students - but several. You should celebrate reaching this milestone, safe ly and appropriately, and be assured that regardless of what results you get, there is a bright future ahead.

HELPLINES If you need to contact the SEC around the time of the results, call 090 6442702 or email candidateportal@ Aexaminations.ie.dedicatedSEC Candidate Helpline will also be available. The National Parents Council Post Pri mary (NPCPP) will also be running their annual helpline which is supported by qualified guidance counsellors from September 2 to 14 from 2pm-8pm. Stu dents, parents and guardians can con tact the Freephone number on 1800 265 165.

On Friday September 23, Ireland will become a cultural playground where everyone is invited to seek out culture around every corner. This will mark the 17th year of Culture Night - an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity, and the arts. Kerry will be host to a programme of events on the night that offers something for everyone and invites everyone, everywhere, on one night to discover and celebrate all that our culture is today. This year’s programme will have a greater focus on late night events scheduled after 9pm through additional support by the Arts Council. Street spectacles, fire shows, and gigs will all form part of the Cathaoirleachprogramme. of Kerry, Councillor John Francis Flynn, shared his thoughts as he launched Culture Night Kerry outside Library Place in Killorglin. “Kerry is lucky to have enough talent and culture to fill every night of the year with colour and celebration. Culture Night is a highlight of the calendar for arts in Kerry and I am grateful to all the artists, community groups, theatres, and institutions that come together on the night to shine a light on all that the Kingdom has to offer. I look forward to Friday September 23 and hope to see you there.” Library Place houses Kerry’s Collection of 250 artworks by Pauline Bewick. A former ambassador for Culture Night, Bewick’s legacy and her art will be celebrated with a late opening at Library Place on the Throughoutnight. Ireland, doors to cultural institutions such as museums, theatres and arts centres will open late. Special events are programmed at participating locations, and, thanks to the continued support of the Arts Council and Kerry County Council, all activities are free of charge.

Culture Night has evolved to become a collaborative experience with an emphasis on opening doors, welcoming people into new spaces and the discovery of different experiences.

Did you know that ear candling can stimulate the blood and energy flow in the body? It can also help people suffering from tinnitus, blocked ears, sore throats, hay fever, and sinusitis. So, how does it work? You will be asked to lie on your side on a therapy bed and a special candle will be gently inserted in your ear. The burning action of the candle turns to vapour the herbs and essential oils. The vapour is drawn into the ear canal and this performs a massaging function as well as softening any impurities.

Celebrate culture this coming September

For further information about Culture Night please visit www.culturenight.ie. An e-brochure detailing all events in Kerry will be available in September from the Arts Office website.

The courtyard in Killarney House and Gardens will be the setting of a not to be missed performance of Guido’s Impossible Circus by the Fanzinis. Followed by a late-night look at the books with a tour of the Killarney House Library – not usually accessible to the public.

An open call for applications for Culture Night Kerry welcomed proposals for events from artists, venues, and community groups earlier this summer. Responses to the open call created this year’s programme for Culture Night Kerry.

The number of tenants may impact on the quotes given. Properties rented to local authorities would need to be spe cially referred with some underwriters. Here are some tips when buying Land lord Insurance including some cost sav ing tips.

If you own a residential investment property that is rented out on a long-term basis you will need specific landlord home insurance in place for your Buildings, Contents and Public Liability.

Shopping around: When shopping around it is important to understand that direct insurers and banks will only sell their own products. They may not be able to offer you choice or advise you on your options. It is also worth noting that you are free to move your insurance from your mortgage provider, we do this on a regular basis and succeed in secur ing large savings for these customers. Use a Broker: As experts in Home In surance we understand the market con ditions and can advise which insurer or which product is most suitable for your specific needs. Aside from understand ing the discounts than can be achieved in each case, we also negotiate bulk discounts from insurers to get the best prices for our customers.

What you need to know when buying Landlord Insurance

As we move forward, the focus will like ly shift from rising inflation to softening economic data and the negative effects this may have on company earnings. For now, we are likely in the interlude between inflation peaking and economic data slowing significantly, somewhat of a momentary sweet spot. Remember, there will always be risk. The particular risk that we are most preoccu pied with just changes over time. MARKET OUTLOOK I'm not bearish, but I do think that return expectations need to be modified. We have just ended a period of unprec edented liquidity. Money was free. The Fed Funds Rate sat at 0.3%. The 10-year Treasury was 0.72%. The federal reserve doubled its balance sheet from $4.5 Bil lion to $9 Billion. These were not normal conditions, and these conditions gave rise to unadulter ated risk-taking. The market is now resetting to more 'normal' conditions where the Fed is no longer willing to remove any and all downside risk. Moving forward, the market recovery is more likely to be more U-shaped than V-shaped this time around. This simply means a recovery will take longer than we have recently experienced as the li quidity and support that fuelled previous reversals gets stripped out of the market. That's not to say that upside doesn't ex ist. There is still an abundance of compa nies with the ability to generate consist ently strong earnings over time. Still, the general upward trend of the market may be slower relative to what we have expe rienced in recent years. Liquidity pulled forward a lot of the expected returns, and that will take time to reset.

Buildings: Your property should be in sured for its rebuild cost not the market value. Rebuilding costs have increased substantially over the past 12 months. There is a handy rebuilding calculator on www.scsi.ie where you can calculate your own property. Under-insurance can have serious consequences in the event of a claim, so it is advisable to re view annually and get professional ad vice from an insurance expert. Contents: Landlords contents will cover the replacement cost for the items that the landlord owns, examples would in clude dining tables and couches. The tenants should have their own contents policy in place to cover their own be longings.

Review: Landlord Home Insurance rates use many data streams so it is crucial to ensure that your details are correct when quoting. Important factors are your Eircode, number of tenants, intrud er and smoke alarms, year of construc tion and flat roof details, if applicable.

In my view, pullbacks in the stock market are still buyable. I recently topped up po sitions in Microsoft and Berkshire Hatha way, for example. Other names I have been purchasing are less focused on pullbacks and more on the shift in secular trends in the market. An energy market that has experienced a complete lack of investment in infrastruc ture in the past decade, growing demand and no immediate substitute has created some powerful supply/demand dynam ics for the likes of Exxon. Stranded asset risk exists but still represents a solid me dium-term play and has worked well so far this year as other areas detract. Finally, I will re-look at some decimated stocks over the coming weeks. Twilio is down +80% in recent months (currently trading at roughly $72 off a high of $435), but Q2 earnings beat expectations, and I do like the long-term viability of the company, so it's time to see if the cur rent price represents a more digestible entry point. Bear in mind, momentum is still very much against this one, and lack of profitability will likely keep it out of fa vour over the short term. Thank you all for the support and kindness given to us during this difficult time. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. Like all families juggling serious illness and treatment during the Covid pandemic, it sadly meant that many more friends and loved ones could not be a bigger part of Clare’s life during this time. We know there are many, including life-long friends, who would have loved a proper chat or a hug, or to hold her hand, especially towards the end, but it came too soon. Your love and support were always there. No doubt, you will have many treasured memories, as do we. How lucky we all are, to have shared such a friend in our lives. Con, Lauren, and Andrew. Clare’s First Anniversary Mass will be held on Wednesday 31st August at 7.00 p.m. in St. Brigid’s Chapel, Church of The Resurrection, Park Road, Killarney.

To neighbours who facilitated funeral traffic and who stood in respect along the roadside. To all those who were a part of her beautiful funeral mass, who led the coffin in and who did readings and prayers. To the musicians and singers, who despite being reduced to a handful because of Covid restrictions, contributed so much to an occasion of profound warmth and solidarity. Those who gathered outside the church grounds, including so many from The Sem and St. Brigid’s Secondary School who sang in the open air, those that walked the streets with us, and the guard of honour by students from St. Brendan’s College. It was all such a poignant and uplifting tribute to Clare. Thank you all.

Rathmore welcome Laune Rangers to Rathbeg (Saturday 6pm), Beaufort host Glenflesk (Sunday 2.30pm), and Gneeveguilla face a tough task away to An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus (Sunday 2.30pm). In the Junior Premier, Listry will have home advantage for their quarter-final against Ballyduff (Saturday 6pm), Fossa have a tricky journey to Annascaul (Saturday 6pm), Ballymac face St Senan’s (Saturday 6pm) and Skellig Rangers are up against Ardfert (Sunday 2.30pm). Firies are gunning for promotion from the Junior Championship; the next step for them is a home quarter-final against Scart (Sunday 2.30pm),

- Neighbours Legion and Kilcummin set for Intermediate clash

INTERMEDIATE The fight for a coveted seat at the top table of Kerry football is also heating up this weekend as the Intermediate Club Championship reaches the quarter-final Thestage.tie of the round is surely the local grudge match between two teams who are keen to make their spell at intermediate level as brief as possible: the Killarney Legion and Kilcummin (Sunday 2.30pm, TheDerreen).Legion, who are now managed by Cork native Ned English, made light work of their pool, defeating Laune Rangers, Dromid and John Mitchels pretty comfortably. Four first-half points by James O’Donoghue set the hosts on their way against Mitchels on Sunday and they eventually prevailed on a double-scores scoreline: 0-14 to 0-7. Legion lost their senior status last year following defeat to Dr Crokes. Climbing back up at the first time of asking would be a massive boost for the club. Standing in their way at the quarter-final stage are Kilcummin, who themselves dropped down to the second tier as recently as 2020. Noel Duggan (six frees) top-scored in last weekend’s victory over Glenbeigh-Glencar and the ever-reliable Brendan Kealy chipped in with a couple of placed balls of his own. Legion, the pre-tournament favourites, will be fancied to get over the line but Kilcummin are never an easy team to play against. This tie could end up going down to the Elsewhere, wire.

- Glenflesk, Rathmore, Gneeveguilla also in contention

They might be new to the scene but Spa are really shaking things up at the highest level of Kerry football.

The welcome return from injury of Liam Kearney has given them a lift and they will fancy their prospects at home to Kerins O’Rahillys (Saturday 6pm). Strand Road were held to a draw by Templenoe on Sunday last thanks to a late Killian Spillane goal. Spa, for their part, defeated Na Gaeil away 1-16 to 0-12, which was a great result. If the defence can minimise conceding frees anywhere inside the 45 they will be in a good place as Rahillys depend to a large extent on the free-taking of Jack Savage. The David Moran v Liam Kearney battle for midfield supremacy will also be crucial. If Spa win this sector, they have forwards like Evan Cronin, Mike Foley and David Spillane to rack up a winning Templenoescore.

host Dingle in the other semi-final (also Saturday at 6pm).

Home semi-final for high-flying Spa

It took the Tullig-based club a decade to regain their senior status and their performances since re-emerging on the main stage in 2021 have been remarakFewble. expected them to advance from a Club Championship pool that included last year’s beaten finalists Kenmare and Dingle (who are veterans of the senior scene) but they did just that – and as group winners, no less.

Former senior star Tomás Ó Sé has been confirmed as the new manager of the Kerry U20 football team, the county board have revealed.

The new Kerry U20 manager has previously coached UCC and Glanmire in Cork, where he works and resides. Ó Sé certainly has pedigree as a player. He won five All-Irelands and five AllStars with Kerry, and was named Footballer of the Year in 2004. He also won major honours with An Ghaeltacht and his adopted club in Cork, Nemo Rangers.

The championships, the first since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, certainly provided plenty of drama and exciting racing over the course of three days of Racingaction. began on Friday afternoon with the Ladies Double from Workmen, Siobhán Burn’s and Ciara Moynihan, taking gold and setting the tone for the remainder of the weekend. A very successful weekend saw the 23crew entry from the Workmen return an eye-watering 12 gold medals and All-Ireland titles, five silver medals and four bronze medals, making it a memorable regatta for all involved.

The Gaeltacht native takes over from outgoing bainisteoir Declan O’Sullivan, who recently stepped down from the role after two years citing work commitments as the deciding factor. This year under O’Sullivan and his selectors Seán O’Sullivan and Niall O’Mahony, The Kingdom reached the All-Ireland semi-final where they lost to Tyrone. Ó Sé is bringing with him a star-studded backroom team that includes former teammates Séamus Moynihan and Bryan Sheehan, and one time Kerry GAA chairman Seán Walsh from Moyvane. Moynihan had been linked with the senior job in the wake of Peter Keane’s departure in 2021 and it later transpired that he was part of unsuccessful candidate Stephen Stack’s would-be backroom team. He has previously worked with the Kerry U21s alongside Tomás’ brother, Darragh. It appeared as though Ó Sé was set to take over as Offaly senior manager after John Maughan left the post - he was operating as a coach under Maughan and county chair Michael Duignan indicated that Ó Sé would be in the running if he wanted it – but the Kerryman declined, also citing work commitments.

The club won gold in the Fisa Ladies Double, Masters Mixed, 800m Sprint Men, U21 Ladies, U21 Men, Senior Mixed, 800 Sprint Men, U18 Ladies, Veteran Mixed, Intermediate Men, Junior Men, and Senior TheLadiessilver medals came in the 800m Sprint Mixed, Pre Veteran Men, Veteran Men, Senior Mixed, and Senior Men

“Congratulations to all of our medal winners, rowers and coxes and a big thank you to our coaches who have put in a terrific effort throughout the year to prepare the crew’s for this weekend,” a club spokesperson said. “The club would also like to recognise and thank all of our helpers, parents and supporters for transporting, lifting and loading boats and equipment over the weekend.”

After narrowly missing out against both Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Netherlands in the first two games last week, Ireland claimed a superb win against North Macedonia on Monday (94-40). Killarney girl Leah was really on form for the team in green as she chipped in with 10 points on the day. Unfortunately, Ireland were not able to follow that result up with another victory against a strong Serbia side on Tuesday, but their spirited performance was heralded as promising by those in attendance. Their results in the group stages saw them advance to the 9th-16th place classification games with the aim of finishing as high as possible. They were to take on the hosts, Montenegro, yesterday evening (Thursday), after the Killarney Advertiser went to print. Whatever the outcome of that match, Leah and her teammates are sure to have gained a lot from their latest experience with the national team.

Kerry legend Tomás Ó Sé named new U20 boss Leah McMahon stars for Ireland in Montenegro Huge medal haul for Workmen’s in Wexford

Workmen’s Rowing Club made the long trip to Ferrybank, Co Wexford for the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships last weekend and the local club returned with a remarkable haul of medals for their troubles.

Losing that financial support would have been life-changing for Lee, who has aspirations of competing at the next World Championships in Paris in 2023. “If we’re going to call a spade a spade, I had some very poor performances last year. [But] it was just a poor season. I’ve shown consistency over the last four years, I’ve been going on the right trajectory – up until last year when things didn’t go my way. “It would have been quite harsh to say, ‘he’s had a bad year, we’re going to strip him of his funding’. I think it was a fair compromise to allow me to have another year to prove myself. I have some really good people in my corner that were fighting for my cause.” With the help of Tomás Griffin (coach), Alan Delaney (high jump technical coach), Shane O’Rourke and Ciarán McCabe (both strength and conditioning), the Kerryman has bounced back in a big “Thankfullyway. I’ve been able to produce a very solid year. There were some clear signs of progression. My best jump last year was 1.87 (metres). I’ve jumped 1.90 three times this year, which is a big im“Finishingprovement.second at the French Grand Prix was a highlight for me. I finished behind the Paralympic silver medallist as well. It was good to finish second at the first international comp since the Paralympics because the confidence had taken a bit of a hit. I’ve always been very confident so when Tokyo came it

High jumper Jordan Lee opens up to Adam Moynihan about last year’s Paralympic heartbreak and how he managed to rediscover his confidence in 2022

SETBACK: Jordan Lee representing Ireland at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021. The Killarney man was disappointed with his performance in Japan but after a successful 2022 season, he's very much back on track. Photo: David Fitzgerald/Sportsfile.

Provided that I’m training hard, giving it 100%, and being very diligent, I felt that things would get better.

All that materialised into a very good season.

When Jordan Lee jetted off for Tokyo this time last year, his hopes were high. The Killarney high jumper was heading east to compete in his first ever Paralympic Games and although he was still new to the sport (he had taken it up just three years prior), his performances up to that point indicated that he wasn’t just there to take part. Sadly, that’s not how things played out for the then 21-year-old. He underperformed on the world stage and finished last in his field. It was a chastening experience for Lee and the ramifications were potentially huge as his funding from Paralympics Ireland was now – very suddenly - under threat. “Tere was a lot of pressure on me to try and retain my funding,” Lee reveals. “I was very much on my last legs. Funding can be wiped away in an instant if you’re not performing. It’s very, very cutthroat. It was 50-50 [for me].”

Lee often speaks of his desire to be recognised as a good pro athlete – not simply a good disabled athlete – and he proved his point once again by winning gold at the National U23 Championships in July. In doing so he became the first disabled competitor since superstar sprinter Jason Smyth to triumph against able-bodied rivals at nationals. “A lot of it is down to doing the basic things right again, and knowing that Tokyo is over. I can’t be dwelling on it. I’ve got to move on,” Lee says of his recent “Beingform. honest with yourself is important too. I realised that it couldn’t get lower from that point [in Tokyo]. I was actually in a very chilled out headspace all year. Provided that I’m training hard, giving it 100%, and being very diligent, I felt that things would get better. All that materialised into a very good sea“Nowson. I’m in a really good place to retain the funding again for next year. I’m third in the world and second in Europe in both high jump and long jump.” The long jump is another nice string to Lee’s bow and, true to form, he has sampled immediate success in his new discipline. In his first competition, having trained for the event just twice, he jumped up to second in Europe. He will weigh up the pros and cons of potentially juggling both disciplines next year – the high jump is still his priority - but for now he’s ready to enjoy some “Itdowntime.hasbeen a hectic year so I’m looking forward to taking a break and doing normal 22-year-old things for once.”

“It’severybody.goodto have internationals around the place but nobody is held on a pedestal. That’s not what athletics is about. It’s about inclusion. We all have different goals that we want to achieve but the steps to get there remain the same for everybody.”

The Killarney Valley AC man is actually heading to the host city of the next World Championships – Paris – in a couple of weeks, although he says it’s very much a holiday rather than a reconnaissance Beforemission.hesigns off for 2022 he will attend the official opening of the Killarney Valley AC Arena tomorrow (Saturday). He and his clubmates will take part in an exhibition of athletics on the day as the club hopes to showcase both their new facilities and the talented young sportspeople who are benefitting from these new facilities.

There must be a sense of pride there?

The official opening of the Killarney Valley AC Arena takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at 3.30pm.

“The club had to work at the start to get people invested into athletics. Now we have an unbelievable team with athletes who are quitting other sports to stick with us. There’s evidence there to prove that it has worked, with Sarah going to the World Championships. I still don’t think that gets the recognition it deserves. To be competing against the Jamaicans and the Polish – the best in the world – and she’s training here with Killarney Valley…”

It’s not all about the superstars who have Europeans and Worlds and Olympics on their minds, though. As Lee himself has shown through his own achievements to date, sport is for

BOUNCING BACK was a shock to the system. “In France, I threw myself out there and I had the silver medallist on the edge. He had to pull some jumps out of the bag. It was important to build that confidence up again.”

“Oh definitely. We always knew Sarah was incredibly talented it was just a question of consistency with her sessions at the track, progressing on bit by bit. She has done that, and she deserves all the rewards that she gets. She’s an incredible athlete.

CONFIDENT: Lee is now ranked third in the world in the high jump after jumping 1.90m three times this season. He has also taken up the long jump (pictured).

“It’s something that the club have wanted to do over the past couple of years but it couldn’t happen because of Covid,” Lee says. “We’re looking forward to having a great atmosphere down at the track with tons of people there. “I know it’s a slogan and a hashtag that we use on social media but the club is legitimately ‘On the Rise’ over the past couple of years. This year alone we’ve won 106 or 107 national and provincial medals – that’s not including county competitions. That’s an insane number for what is a very new club, as such, in terms of moving into the track. It’s amazing to see it. “Hopefully on Saturday everyone can get a good feel for what the club’s culture is like, get to see us in action and have some fun. “It’s very hard for the general public to understand athletics, really. Jason Smyth, for example has run the 100 metres in 10.2 seconds. He competes against somebody who runs 10.9. The natural reaction for someone watching that is to think, ‘the guy who ran 10.9 is no good’. But 10.9 is ridiculously fast. That’s still an unbelievable time. “I think speed and other physical attributes on the track aren’t really recognised by people. They don’t understand how good you have to be to run a certain time or jump a certain height. “We have an unbelievably talented team right now. It’s hopefully going to be interesting for the people who come down on Saturday. I’m training this week so I can jump over a couple of people’s heads, just to put things into Onecontext.”ofthose individuals he’ll be clearing is his girlfriend and fellow para-athlete Madie Wilson-Walker. Or should we say, ‘attempting to clear’? “We’ve already done it. We tested it out,” Wilson-Walker – who accompanied Lee for this interview – jokes. Was there any flinching? “Oh yeah, there was! He said he would do it off three steps and I was like, ‘I swear to God…!’” “Three steps was bit dodgy,” Lee smiles. “That’s the pressure though. You either have to clear her or something goes wrong.” As they say in show business, it will be alright on the night. Hopefully. Lee and Wilson-Walker have been joined at the hip since reuniting post-Covid. The Canadian long jumper – a bilateral amputee who competes using blades - moved to Killarney in 2021 to be with Lee and properly resume their transatlantic romance. Of course, Lee and Wilson-Walker won’t be the only international athletes on show. The Killarney club currently boasts a number of top-level performers and Lee says that, as a team, they are all pushing each other on to greater “Wethings.have an amazing family dynamic in the group. We have group sessions but generally they will split up after the warm-up into different disciplines. Sarah [Leahy] will be doing her stuff with the sprinters, I’ll be doing my stuff with the jumpers, Oisín Lynch and Jason O’Reilly will be doing their own things with their own group of people… It’s great craic.

“I think the likes of Sarah and Ciara Kennelly and myself have inspired the likes of Oisín Lynch and Jason O’Reilly, and hopefully other people in the club, to keep on progressing at a high level.”

There are nine teams from the town in the Kerry District League and eight more in the area between Tralee and Listowel, so footballers from this area have plenty of options.

The third most successful club in Kerry, St Brendan’s Park (also of Tralee), were forced to drop out of the Premier Division in 2017 due to a lack of numbers at senior level. This came as a shock to many observers, especially considering their solid underage structure. They were repositioned to the bottom division and they have since been working their way back up the pyramid; next season they will play in the Premier B, i.e. the second tier. Park’s most recent Premier A title came in 2012. There are a number of factors that could explain the demise of the traditional Tralee clubs, but the amount of senior teams now drawing players from the Tralee area is surely one of them.

Nine seems like a lot for a town of Tralee’s size; for comparison, there are six clubs in the whole of East Kerry. So you effectively have all of the talent in the Tralee area spread out across nine teams. In Killarney that number is two (or three if you include MEK Galaxy who also draw some players from the town).

Fair play to Celtic but what does their reign say about Kerry soccer?

The main question is: where are the other big clubs in all this? First let’s turn our attention to Tralee, Kerry’s biggest town and the traditional home of soccer in the Despitecounty.Celtic’s recent haul, Tralee Dynamos are still the Kerry District League’s most decorated club. While they weren’t a million miles off second place this season, they have flirted with relegation in the recent past and their last league title came in 2015.

I know all about how good Killarney Celtic are. I’ve played against them more times than I’d like to remember and I’ve seen first hand how talented and committed their players and officials are. They deserve all the silverware they’ve amassed over the past five years and nothing I’m about to say here is to take away from that success.

But there’s no escaping the fact that one team dominating a competition is not the sign of a healthy competition. Whether it’s Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga or Dublin in the football championship, monopolies are bad and they sometimes bring to light broader issues within the game. Celtic’s stranglehold over Kerry soccer is no different. Following last week’s victory over Camp, they have now won four consecutive league and cup doubles. And it’s not just the trophies, it’s the manner in which they’re securing them. This season they won every single one of their 14 league games and finished 19 points clear of their closest rivals, Killarney Athletic. They secured twice as many wins as Athletic and scored twice as many goals. The format of the league – which is decided by a final playoff between the top two regardless of points totals – gives off some semblance of jeopardy, but Celtic are invariably overwhelming favourites regardless.

Dingle Bay Rovers, the last team outside of Killarney to triumph in the Premier A, now find themselves in Division 1B, i.e. the fourth tier.

HQ: Mounthawk Park in Tralee, the headquarters of the Kerry District League.

As for other competitors, my own club Killarney Athletic are tipping away and getting to finals (we were the last team besides Celtic to win the league, in 2017) and Castleisland tend to be competitive, as do Listowel. But, in truth, the gap between Celtic and the chasing pack is Gettingwide.players to commit is a major challenge for every club and if players aren’t committing then closing that gap becomes very difficult indeed. Why aren’t players committing to soccer in Kerry? A reoccurring issue that keeps coming up in conversations with stakeholders is the way fixtures are scheduled. Whereas most sports have a set fixture schedule at the start of the season, or at least on a competition-by-competition basis as the year goes on, the KDL still sets its fixtures on a weekly basis. That makes it impossible for players to plan ahead with regards to work, holidays, or social events. I should know. It’s precisely why I stepped away from Athletic earlier this season. It also breeds crazy situations like the one we’re seeing this year as one season runs from September to August, and the next season starts up again in TheSeptember.leaguewill argue that changing the system won’t work but I would argue that the current system isn’t working, so what have they got to lose?

Fun and games at Crokes Summer Camp

Almost 150 children descended upon Dr Crokes’ ground at Lewis Road to enjoy some football, hurling, fun, games and yoga at the club’s summer camp. As these fantastic club photos clearly show, a wonderful time was had by all.

CARNIVAL: Fun times return to Gneeveguilla Community next weekend September 2-4 as Gneeveguilla GAA Carnival returns after a three year absence and there is great anticipation ahead of the weekend. Preparations are well underway as candidates for Lord Mayor of Gneeveguilla are canvassing around the locality. There are four candidates: DJ Murphy (Village), Mark Cronin (Leam), Donnagh Fitzgerald (Tureencahill) and Jim Coughlan (Gullane) running for election to succeed outgoing Lord Mayor Michael Fleming. Election night is Saturday night with music supplied by Rockin Jimmy and DJ Paudie Dillane. The Carnival kicks off on the Friday night with Denis McCarthy Memorial final at 6.15pm. Music in Gneeveguilla GAA hall that night by All Folk'd Up. The bumper packed weekend continues on the Saturday with Paddy O’Leary Memorial Tournament from 11am followed by The Senior Parish League at 4pm which leads into the election of Lord Mayor of Gneeveguilla. On the Sunday the hugely popular and competitive fancy dress parade goes up through the Village from 1pm certainly not too be missed. This is followed on by a family fun day in club grounds with various activities for young and old alike. Also Mullins Family funfair will have amusements set up in Car Park all weekend. Club chairperson Stephen Crowley said: “It’s wonderful to have our carnival weekend back after last few years which has been tough on everyone. We look forward to welcoming people from near and far to what will be a wonderful weekend for the community.”

LADIES FOOTBALL: Our U14 girls had qualified for the County League Final which was played in Currans last Thursday evening. Facing them was the West Kerry combination of Dingle/ Annascaul/Castlegregory. Needing to be at their best against such a physically stronger team they struggled to find the form that helped them reach this far and had to give way to the girls from the West. With an East Kerry competition kicking off very soon there is no better place than the pitch to get your mojo flowing again. The U15 Girls welcomed Na Gaeil to Direen in the Club Championship last Tuesday evening. Playing against a strong wind in the first half they played cleverly and that saw them trail by two points at half time. A strong defensive showing in the second half, allied to the aid of the elements, saw the girls push on and win by a scoreline of 4-5 to 1-10. They now face

SENIOR MEN: Our Senior Men's team made it three wins from three in the group stages of the Intermediate Club Championship with a deserved win over John Mitchels in Direen 0-14 to 0-7. It was good to see Darragh Lyne make an appearance as a second half substitute following his return from the USA. The quarter final of the Intermediate Club Championship v Kilcummin is fixed for Direen this Sunday with a 2.30pm throw-in.

U13 BOYS: Fossa travelled to Kilcummin, for the first game of Eask Kerry League. Jake Dunlea handling captain duties. A close and entertaining first half, with Kilcummin leading by the minimum at the break, 0-7 to 1-3. Unfortunately a must tougher second half, where Fossa struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. Kilcummin winning on a final scoreline of 0-16 to 1-5. Kilcummin GAA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Kilcummin 0-12 Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-10. We came into this game knowing that we could finish top of the group or indeed in a relegation battle. As it transpired, we had to endure 11 minutes of extra time before we could relax and look forward to a quarter - final meeting next weekend. That extended extra time tested the resolve of our players as the visitors threw everything at them in an effort to secure a winning goal and they deserve great credit for surviving during a period when they must have wondered if the final whistle would ever come. The first half saw us get into a pattern of play that saw us lead by 0-8 to 0-5 at half time. The second half was a different story as the game took on stop-start shape and we saw very little free flowing football. In the end we got our deserved victory and a place in the quarter -final away to Killarney Legion this weekend. Team and scorers: Brendan Kealy (0-2 f), Kevin McSweeney, Dara O’Callaghan, Chris O’Leary, Dan Moynihan, Philip O’Leary, Eoghan O’Donovan (01), Kevin Gorman, Kieran Murphy, Cian Foley, Mark O’Shea (0-1), Gary O’Leary (0-1), Danny Cronin, Paul O’Shea (0-1), Noel Duggan (0-6f). Subs Used: Philip Casey, Shane McSweeney.

ISG in the semi-final in Direen August 23. The U17s are at home also on August 25 when they play Corca Dhuibhne in the Club Championship quarter-finals. Throw in is 7 bells.

U11 BOYS: Our Under 11 Boys travelled out early this morning to Farranfore to take part in the Annual Firies GAA club's Jerry Foley Memorial Blitz. We played 3 very competitive group games against Kilcummin, Gneeveguilla and Milltown-Castlemaine and successfully qualified for the quarter-finals. In a tough quarter-final encounter we eventually lost out to a strong Ballymacelligott team. All our boys played their hearts out today in 4 really good games and did Fossa proud as always.

SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Rd 3Spa 1-16 Na Gaeil 0-12. Spa travelled to Tralee on Saturday evening to play Na Gaeil in Rd 3 of the Senior Club Championship. While our senior status for 2023 was secured after last week’s result, Spa won the game to progress to the semi-finals this Saturday against Kerins O’Rahillys (6pm in Spa). Well done to our senior team and management. Wishing all our injured players a speedy recovery.

JUNIOR PREMIER CHAMPIONSHIP: Quarter-final - Annascaul v Fossa – Saturday at 6pm 6pm in Annascaul.

SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr Crokes 1-13 Austin Stacks 0-11. In a tight game played in glorious conditions in Lewis Road we were lucky to get the result that we needed to avoid the threat of a relegation play off. Austin Stacks started the better scoring 3 points from play after just 5 minutes of play. It took until the 7th minute for Cian McMahon to open our scoring with a point from play. Micheal Burns worked well to give us the lead for the first time in the game after scoring 3 consecutive points with 14 minutes on the clock. We played well for the remainder of the second half after being at a numerical disadvantage having lost Brian Looney to a black card in the 18th minute. Half-time score, Dr Crokes 0-6 Austin Stacks 0-4. It was point for point at the beginning of the second half as Brian Looney cancelled out 2 Stacks points with 2 well taken points from play. The turning point in the game was in the 43rd minute when Micheal Burns was taken down in the square and Tony Brosnan converted from the penalty spot, giving us a fivepoint lead. We played well for the last 17 minutes and never looked like giving away our lead. We finished comfortable winners in the end.

East Kerry GAA UNDER 15 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Round 3 - Eoghan Ruadh 0–6 East Kerry 0–14. It was far from a classic, but East Kerry won’t care, as they progressed to the semi-finals of the Under 15 County Championship, with a penalty save just before half time proving crucial. The opening stages were evenly contested, with Luke Doolan and Joey McCarthy pointing for East Kerry, replied to by Pierce Moynihan and Cathal Casey for Eoghan Ruadh. Discipline then started to become a problem for Eoghan Ruadh, as McCarthy fired over three quick frees to put East Kerry in a dominant position. Points from Eanna Murphy and Oisin Fleming added to that lead, before McCarthy effortlessly chipped the ball up to himself, and found the target with his left foot. Eoghan Ruadh had a chance to get back in it when Jack Rudden was tripped as he chased a loose ball. Pierce Moynihan took the penalty, firing his shot low and towards the corner. Kacpar Robak dived down to his right and kept the shot out. James Kelly did kick a great point for Eoghan just before the break, but they still went in five points down, and needing to come out firing in the second half. The second half became more and more scrappy, with East Kerry missing a lot of chances, but never looked like losing. There were moments of quality though between the dull periods. McCarthy continued to impress on his way to a seven-point total, while Darragh O’Keeffe for Eoghan Ruadh, and Ben Kelliher for East Kerry produced classy scores. In the end East Kerry ran out eight-point winners, but they know they will have to improve massively in the semifinal. Eoghan Ruadh meanwhile, exit after three defeats, where they produced periods of good football, but did not have the consistency needed to gain victories.

A Jay Barrett of Listowel was third with Erin Moloney winning the U20 prize with a fine score of 11 under par. Sarah Cooney of Seapoint in Louth won the Girls prize. On Saturday Brian finished third overall in the main U16 category missing out on second on countback as he was the captain of the Kerry ‘Gold’ side that made it three-ina-row for the county in the Inter-County event as they had a winning margin of 22 shots over Tipperary with Noah and Nathan Cronin also members of that team alongside Listowel’s Barrett. Ben Kelliher was a member of the Kerry ‘Green’ side that came third in the Inter-County as we congratulate A Jay on winning the Boys U16 title as well as Tralee’s Sophie Moynihan on finishing second in the Girls event.
