PAGE SIX Letter Reaction

I Do Not Want My Daughters To Feel Pressurised Into Abortion I am writing in response to Anne Lucey’s article in last week’s Advertiser which seemed bitter, ill-informed and wrong. It brought nothing to the current important debate. I am a woman, a mother and a nurse. I have worked abroad for many years in London. I didn’t have a vote in 1984 but I will be voting ‘no’ to repeal of the Eighth Amendment. The article suggested that all women who vote pro life are female handmaids of the male establishment. I find this label offensive as I am a freethinking, informed Irish woman. The debate is not about trusting women as suggested in the article, it’s about looking at the facts. It is about listening to the expert geneticists and embryologists who can demonstrate that a new and unique life begins at conception. It is about knowing what this referendum will mean for Ireland in the future. I have seen this future in the UK and have a deep concern for the future of my children and their children. Today abortion is such a normal part of British life that 1 in 5 children are aborted. That translates into 20 out every 100 children born or one year out of every secondary school. In England 92% of babies with Down syndrome are aborted. I care for these lives and love my cousins who have Down syndrome. I believe authentic feminism seeks to protect the future of all females those alive and those yet to be born. I do not want my daughters to feel pressurised into abortion which is the case often in England. I would like my children to grow up in an Irish society that loves and supports all women and all children especially those in traumatic and difficult situations. For me this is truly liberal and progressive because I firmly believe that future generations will look back at our age and the abortion clinics and ask what were they doing, just as today with past injustices. In Ireland we still have a chance to protect the first and most important right of all our citizens, our children and grandchildren, born and unborn - the right to life. Annette Green, Killarney

This Debate Touches Every Member Of Our Diverse Society As a young, female medical doctor, and mother, I feel compelled to respond to the article on page 12 of Killarney Advertiser (January 1), which gives the impression that those who are pro-life are all men or “their female handmaidens”, and links the pro-life viewpoint to concepts such as repression and control of women. The article mentions that women who were well travelled and educated were among those campaigning against the Eighth Amendment in 1983. I am both educated and well travelled, but does that make my voice any more important than anyone else’s in this debate? Absolutely not. I would argue that a debate on the right to life of a human being is something which touches each and every member of our diverse society in a profound way, and everyone’s voice is important, whatever their position in life, their intellectual ability, or the number of stamps in their passport. Articles such as this and unfortunately the recent speeches of many of our politicians, are, I fear, having the effect of silencing the ordinary person who holds the simple view that it is simply wrong to take a human life, an innocent one at that. I would strongly urge those people to stand up and be heard. There are more of us out there than the media would let you believe. Dr Siobhán Crowley, Killarney

In An Ideal World There Would Not Be Abortion This Is Not An Ideal World

Words: Anne Lucey IF I am accused of bringing nothing to this debate, as Ms Green suggests, then perhaps it proves something I heard this week and which I am inclined to believe; no man or woman under 50 should be allowed vote or have a say in Repeal of the Eighth Amendment. Because this is not an issue that affects all people; this is an issue that affects women only. And it is an issue that affects childbearing women particularly. And of that population grouping a fair percentage – married and single – do go abroad for abortion, for their own reasons. That is the reality. They go abroad because the option is not available to them here and it is available elsewhere. Over 30 years ago contraception was not widely available, babies were found stabbed, choked, washed up on beaches. Desperate women took to the air and the boat – desperate because this country, male-dominated, with the support of very conservative matrons, (I use the word since there is issue with ‘handmaidens’) was no Garden of Eden for women. Contraception is available today. Abortion is still a choice for some. Desperate women, and not so desperate women, are still leaving. For their own reasons. They are adult women. They should be respected, not pilloried and thrashed. And the letters this week prove this debate is back to the future. And it was in that context and the unearthing of difficult events in 1984 I wrote my piece. I have since been looking at The Kerryman and other newspaper archives of the period to do some research on the Joanne Hayes debacle, and the treatment of women, and the whole thrust of the debate by the church and the establishment. The highly conservative and generally well heeled, well protected, powerful medical profession of the time were part of that establishment and campaign. From what I can see the objective was not “protection” of the unborn so much as “prohibition”. It was to hold back the tide of “promiscuity”. A kind of head-in-the-sand approach that if you cut off the solutions, you cut off the problem. That has not worked. And what is worrying is that since the

case of the death of Galway dentist Savita Halappanavar, it is not crys- tal clear that the medical profession now, whether because of lack of legal clarity, or out of conviction, will or can save the life of the mother above the child. That is a fact. Three of the letters received by this publication were from the medical profession. All three only see one issue in my piece of last week: the upcoming referendum. They ignore the past and women’s rights. But I do agree with Dr Crowley, I absolutely agree, people on the so-called ‘pro’ side should not be afraid to speak. And to speak strongly, as they indeed do, and have long done without any sensitivity or fear of upsetting public taste on street corners with strong images and raucous rantings. In 1983 the minority side were afraid to speak at all… Terrified in fact. Are they still to fear? One of the letters received by this publication was from a male doctor and was a pretty strong if meandering attack on this writer and her disrespectful “tone”. This male doctor will not allow his name be published. Why? Again “head-in-the-sand” comes to mind. In an ideal world there would not be abortion and in a sensible country we should not have to debate it. In an ideal world born children would not have to sleep in hotels and hostels for months and would have a home. As for Ms Green’s use of Down syndrome to advance her views: This very week Down Syndrome Ireland issued an appeal to people like Ms Green who will use every opportunity to advance their views to please respect them enough to leave them out of the debate and stop referring to persons with Downs to support their views. I too take issue too with Ms Green and Dr Crowley’s and Dr Who’s misreading of my article to advance their very narrow views. This is not an ideal world. There is a sensible approach as enunciated by Micheál Martin and others and, please, let us not as in 1983 let powerful sectors of the establishment lead society into ignoring reality - this time under the guise of reason.

Fianna Fáil Hopefuls Go Head-To-Head It’s a big weekend for Fianna Fáil in Kerry as party members meet on Sunday to vote for their preferred runner in the next general election. The decision to select just one Kerry candidate means competition will be fierce with a number of well-known figures seeking support for the party nomination. Sitting TD John Brassil and exTD Tom McEllistrim from Tralee appear to be the two favourites to get the nod, while Waterville councillor Norma Moriarty, who ran alongside Brassil in 2016, and Michael Cahill, a councillor from Rossbeigh, have also declared their interest. Milltown councillor Michael D. O’Shea and the Mayor of Tralee, Norma Foley, are expected to complete the shortlist. Two men who will definitely not be throwing their hats into the ring are Mayor of Killarney

Kerry TD John Brassil.

Niall Kelleher and Senator Mark Daly. Cllr Kelleher had earlier expressed his interest, saying he would be “honoured to receive nominations to contest the convention.” “Members supporters and others from my own area and throughout Kerry have been in touch asking me to consider joining John Brassil TD on the Fianna Fáil ticket for the next general election in Kerry as they believe as do I that Killarney

Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher. Pic: Domnick Walsh.

and East Kerry needs a TD,” he said. “It is something that I have been considering along with family, friends and supporters.” The party’s decision to select just one candidate ultimately led Kelleher, along with Daly, to withdraw as both had insisted that they would not run against Brassil. This might change at later date, however, if Fianna Fáil decide to add another name to the ballot.

Healy-Rae: Drink-Driving Bill Will Cause “Isolation And Loneliness”

Danny Healy-Rae TD has criticised Fianna Fáil for abstaining from voting on the drink-driving bill. Pic: Don MacMonagle.

Kilgarvan TD Danny HealyRae has voiced his “disappointment” following the passing of a bill that will see an automatic disqualification for drivers on their first offence of driving while over the permitted 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The law currently states that a person with a full license who

is caught driving with an alcohol level between 50mg and 80mg is liable to get three penalty points on their license and a €200 fine. Healy-Rae also criticised Fianna Fáil for abstaining from Minister Shane Ross’ drink-driving bill, which was passed by a majority of 85 votes to eight in the Dáil. In a statement, Healy-Rae con-

demned Fianna Fáil for removing themselves from the vote. “I was amazed that the Fianna Fáil TD’s abstained on the instruction of their leadership,” he said. “This will cause further isolation and loneliness to so many people in rural parts of Kerry, where we don’t have access to public transport, i.e. Dart, Luas, buses, trains or even taxis.” “There is no difference now between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. They seem to be more interested in the Dublin vote.” He went on to thank Michael Collins, Clare Daly, Michael Fitzmaurice, Michael Lowry, Mattie McGrath and Mick Wallace who also opposed the new legislation. Meanwhile, Minister Ross was left red-faced when he mistakenly voted against his own bill before quickly acknowledging his mistake. Healy-Rae has courted controversy with his outspoken views on this issue in the past, famously claiming that eating a big meal and getting behind the wheel of a car is as dangerous as drink-driving.

Eighth Amendment

Killarney Senator:

“Baby Should Feel That Womb Is A Safe Place”

Killarney native and Fine Gael Senator Paul Coghlan has clarified his stance on the Eighth Amendment debate, insisting that society should “maintain the safety and sanctity of the womb for our unborn at all costs”. Speaking on the report of the Joint Oireachteas Committee, which was released in December and recommended that terminations be allowed up to 12 weeks into a pregnancy, Coghlan said that “any deliberate, planned or wilful extinguishment of life is killing”. “Surely we do not want to go down the road of Great Britain,” he continued, “where abortion has been legislated for and where, to date, approximately 9 million children in the womb have been aborted. I would be totally opposed to neutering or lessening the protection which exists in the Constitution for the equal right to life of the baby in the womb, unless it was to be adequately replaced in law. The baby in the womb is the tiniest and weakest member of our society and should feel that the womb is a safe place.” Meanwhile, local Fianna Fáil councillor John Joe Culloty has said he is “very disappointed” with Micheál Martin’s U-turn on the divisive issue. Speaking on Radio Kerry, Cllr Culloty, who is also the Chairman of the Kerry Right to Life group, added that he didn’t think it was going to make a huge difference to the party. Martin’s decision to come out in support of the liberalisation of abortion laws has been met with some opposition within Fianna Fáil but a meeting called by Carlow-Kilkenny TD Bobby Aylward for members of the parliamentary party who are opposed to their leader’s stance was attended by just eight people.

Dept Of Justice Staff “Frozen” At Killarney Offices

Employees at the Department of Justice offices in Killarney are “tired of complaining” about working conditions at the facility, according to Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae. Healy-Rae raised the issue in a query submitted to the Minister for Justice, Charles Flanagan, having been contacted by staff who are displeased with the current state of the building. “I wish to raise on behalf of the workers the issue of the working conditions in the building,” Healy-Rae said, “mainly the cold as the windows are single-glazed and the staff are frozen while working there.” “Staff are tired of complaining so I’m asking you what proposal have you to improve the conditions the staff are expected to work in, Surely the staff have the right to work in conditions the same as people in the private sector.” In his response, the Minister said there were plans to further develop the office in Killarney “in the context of the expansion of the National Shared Services Office”, and that the issue of window replacement would be incorporated in that programme of works.

TOWNTALK Killarney Park Named Ireland’s Best Hotel

The Killarney Park Hotel has been named Ireland’s number one hotel by TripAdvisor in their annual awards for 2018. The five star hotel, which is owned by Killarney family the Treacys, was also ranked the number one hotel in Ireland for luxury and best service. Harvey’s Point in Donegal was gunning for first place for the fifth year in a row but the famous hotel, located in the heart of Killarney town, eventually came out on top. Ashford Castle (Mayo) and Hayfield Manor (Cork) finished third and fourth respectively while Tralee’s Ballygarry House Hotel completed the top five. In the luxury hotel category, the Park beat off stiff competition from Ballyfin

Demesne (Laois), Ashford Castle, Hayfield Manor and the Merrion (Dublin) to claim the prestigious top prize. Speaking after the results were announced, general manager Niamh O’Shea said it was very much a team effort. “Killarney Park Hotel is incredibly proud to accept such an accolade from Trip Advisor, that rates travel experiences firsthand from customers,” she said. “Such an award is testimony to the fantastic effort from our amazing team who have provided exceptional service, impeccable standards and ‘Warmth Beyond the Smile’ for the past 25+ years to all of our guests”.

The TEIR One (Tourism Economic Impact Report) launch will take place on this evening. Chamber President

Paul O’Neill has urged locals to make it their business to attend. There will also be a presentation by Mark O’Connell of W2 consulting and Q & A session. It is the first study of this kind ever undertaken to refine the importance of the tourist industry to Killarney, Kerry and Ireland. Kerry Bitte!

Number Of Germans Visiting The Kingdom Expected To Rise Tourism Ireland’s extensive programme of promotions in Germany continued last week with a strong presence at CMT (Caravan, Motor & Tourism fair) in Stuttgart. Tourism Ireland was joined at CMT by 18 Irish and German tourism businesses, including Kerry Airport, Destination Kerry, Go Kerry and Woodlands Caravan & Camping Park, Tralee. In 2017, around 235,000 visitors attended this nine-day travel fair – including more than 1,500 journalists from 21 countries. CMT also attracts leading tour operators and travel agents, as well as many thousands of German holidaymakers looking for ideas and suggestions for their next holiday. “CMT in Stuttgart is our first travel fair of the year, providing an excellent opportunity to spread the word about the many great things to see and do in Kerry and Ireland and to encourage German travellers to put Ireland on their holiday ‘wish-list’ for 2018,” said Zoë Redmond, Tourism Ireland’s Man-

ager for Central Europe. “2017 was the seventh consecutive year of growth for German visitor numbers to the island of Ireland, when we welcomed around 660,000 German visitors. Tourism Ireland will roll out an extensive and targeted programme of activity throughout 2018 to keep the momentum going and build on that growth.” Earlier this month, Tourism Ireland launched its TV campaign in Germany. Ads for Ireland will run until mid-February on a whole host of national and satellite television channels – reaching an estimated 17.2 million viewers. As well as the TV ads, a separate online video campaign will reach almost 4 million people, via popular travel and news websites. Promoting the Wild Atlantic Way and the Star Wars connection with Kerry will continue to be a major focus of Tourism Ireland’s activity in Germany, and elsewhere around the world, in 2018. The organisation will also continue to highlight ease of access from Germany to Ireland.

Car Park

Rock Road Carpark Gets The Green Light

A controversial new plan to build a car park on the Rock Road has been given the green light by town planners. The site, which is located above the grounds of the Mercy Convent (on the left as you exit town), will provide 84 car and 27 bus parking spaces. Early criticism has centred around the location of the proposed car park with some stating their belief that it’s simply too far from the centre of town. Others have voiced concerns about the increased traffic that will inevitably hit the area, especially considering that it is already a part of the town that experiences significant congestion at certain times of the day. The issue of insufficient parking facilities in Killarney town is one that we at the Killarney Advertiser have highlighted in the past, and a number of our proposed solu-

Be Your Own Super Hero At The Europe Hotel

tions were greeted warmly by locals. One of these included a proposed development of the Lewis Road car park which is located centrally and so, we believe, would make an ideal site for this kind of project. Pic: Our artist’s vision for a proposed stateof-the-art car park at Lewis Road.

Letter

“It Will Be A Disaster” The more one thinks about the proposed public parking for cars and buses at Rock Road, the more ludicrous it seems. Putting two-way traffic for buses and cars in this ecclesiastical setting of the Mercy Convent and neighbouring nursing home, and densely populated area immediately opposite, shows very little care for the particular area and the residents surrounding. This proposal if it goes ahead will of course slow traffic down causing back-ups to traffic coming from the New Road and top of High Street. Congestion here together with the congestion that exists over the whole town will exacerbate thing further. This proposal should have gone to a public meeting as such matters have done previ-

ously. The reluctance to do a proper parking space in the existing Glebe is mind-boggling. A two-storey here covering and including the existing parking would take a lot of pressure off. Also, the mental hospital grounds with its own entrances and exits would be ideal for such uses. Three or four other ‘could-be’ parking areas come to mind. Our group ‘Killarney Environs Protection Group’ would ask [the Killarney Town Planning Office] to give more thought to the proposal. If it goes ahead – it will be a disaster. More hospital, nursing home etc. are needed urgently and this site would be more useful for that kind of purpose. Patricia Hanley, Chair of KEPG

Karen Dwyer, creator of ‘My Gratitude Attitude Journal’, will be talking about her inspirational journey at the Hotel Europe Hotel & resort on Sunday, February 11 at 11am. The author, speaker and entrepreneur hopes to empower participants with the tools and strategies she has learned from her journey through MS and overcoming adversity in business. During a day of relaxation, empowerment, meditation and delicious food, prepare to walk away from the day feeling energised and ready to take on the world. This is a day where that gives you the time to discover where you are in life, think about where you want to be, and a pathway to make up the difference. “We rarely take the time out to think about ourselves, where we are in life, where we want to be and make a plan to fill the gap,” Karen said. “This day allows you to move on from the past and get the motivation to start living the life you really want, removing blocks along the way.” Karen Dwyer is a 36-year-old single mum who has battled Multiple sclerosis, and suffered the media spotlight of having been airbrushed from her own multi-million-pound company on national television. Karen’s fighting spirit has led her to the amazing creation, and today she is fighting

fit and full of gratitude. At the age of 23, a young, vibrant Karen was responsible for launching the infamous Jimmy Choo brand in Ireland, and she went on to have an immensely successful career in her field. However, in 2012, Karen was given the horrific diagnosis of having Multiple Sclerosis. For four years she endured hospital stays, medications, and severe medical complications. In December 2014, Karen took the bold decision, to give up her successful career as a radio sales manager, to concentrate fully on restoring her health and taking control of her body. For over two years, Karen concentrated on her health and mindset without using medication. Karen believes that by taking accountability and responsibility for her wellbeing, she has discovered some secrets to her now clean bill of health. Karen has designed programmes and talks on overcoming adversity in all parts of life. This event offers to others the chance to empower themselves with the tools and the strategies to help overcome adversity no matter what. A need to inspire others towards and attitude of a positive and healthy mindset has been the driving force in bringing the ‘Be Your Own Super Hero’ event on a tour around Ireland this year.

‘Pinocchio’ Cast Visit The Chatroom Tune in tonight (Friday, January 26) at 9pm on our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie or our Facebook page to see what happened when some of the cast of Pinocchio, the new panto by the legendary Killorglin Pantomime group, visited The Chatroom. The talented actors came to chat about their new show which is running this weekend in Killorglin as well as coming to the INEC for ONE NIGHT ONLY on Sunday, February 4 at 5pm! Our own Kieran Healy tried his best to stay serious (and failed) when he came face to face with Lo, Dame Gepetto and Pinnochio better known as Colm Clifford, Declan Mangan and Shona Murphy. Pinocchio is Killorglin Pantomime Group’s 55th Panto and if the chat on the couch is anything to go by, it’s going to be hilarious! The guys spoke about what to expect in the upcoming

show and Declan discusses his remarkable record of appearing in all 55 pantos. Relative newcomer Shona Murphy tells us how she feels about taking on the title character and Colm Clifford reveals how his life has changed for the better since last year’s panto. Starting and ending in a song, with a good shot of madness thrown in between, this is not to be missed! Earlier in the week we had a visit from James Knoblauch, Harry Knoblauch and Oran O’Donoghue, winners of the Best Group Award at the 54th BT Young Science & Technology Exhibition. The boys chatted to Kieran about their winning project, where the idea for it came from, their results and the what the reaction has been to them winning such a prestigious award! Spoiler Alert Spoilers are rampant in the Netflix age but they can be avoided, says Adam Moynihan Spoilers aren’t a brand new concept. I’m sure plenty of people had classic plot twist movies like Michael Collins ruined for them by some loudmouth who just had to tell everyone that *SPOILER ALERT* Michael Collins gets shot at the end. Spoilers are, however, far more widespread in the Netflix age as viewers have the freedom to consume entire series from start to finish at their own (often breakneck) pace. We used to experience TV shows together, the nation waiting with bated breath for Sunday night to see which character Miley would shift next (disclaimer: I only remember one storyline from Glenroe). Spoilers were basically impossible because no one, apart from people directly involved with the production, had anything to divulge. But the fact that we’re watching all of these episodes at different times makes spoilers inevitable. People are so eager to vent about the death of their favourite character, speculate about a blossoming romance or discuss the latest utterly insane fan theory, they blurt out too much information and ruin your day.

What annoys me more than anything is when someone is fully aware that you haven’t seen something yet they continue to speak about it regardless. SPOILER ALERT: The next section actually contains a spoiler. If you haven’t seen Dark but plan to, skip to here: I was speaking to a friend recently and she asked if I had seen German series Dark. I said I hadn’t and asked what it was about. “It’s like Stranger Things,” she said. Okay. That was all the information I needed. I was on board. Alas, she wasn’t done talking. “If you travel back in time and change the past, do you change the future?” I thought she had changed the subject. “Yeah, I suppose?” I replied. “Ah,” she said cryptically, “But do you?” “Have you just given away the premise of the entire show?” “Yeah, kind of. Sorry.” I was going to ask her what would happen if I travelled back in time and never spoke to her again, but I went and watched Dark instead. It was good. Not as good as it would have been if I didn’t know what was going to happen, but good nonetheless.

The details shared don’t even need to be overly revelatory to be a spoiler. Here’s a common example: FRIEND: Hey man. Have you seen the last episode of Narcos? ME: No, not yet. I’m going to watch it later. FRIEND: Oh. I won’t say anything so. ME: Okay. FRIEND: [pause] But there’s a *massive* twist at the end! It might seem innocuous, but that’s a spoiler. Now I’m expecting a massive twist at the end. However the story appears to be going, I know that it’s not going to turn out that way. The tiniest piece of information is too much for me. I don’t even like knowing the duration of the thing I’m watching. If you know there are only a few minutes left,

you can rule out certain twists or plotlines as there simply isn’t enough time for it to happen. If that sounds a bit neurotic that’s probably because it is, admittedly, a bit neurotic. But I want to be genuinely surprised by what’s unfolding on the screen before me. Here’s how that conversation with my idiot friend should have went: FRIEND: Hey man. Have you seen the last episode of Narcos? ME: No, not yet. I’m going to watch it later. FRIEND: Goodbye. ME: Goodbye. There. Easy. No more spoilers. Fair enough, you might end up friendless but that’s okay. Netflix is your friend now.

Proprietor Joe Scally placing the ‘G’ on the new signage outside the re-opened Great Southern Hotel on yesterday evening.

Historic Killarney Hotel Re-Opens As The Great Southern After a winter of extensive refurbishments, one of Ireland’s oldest and best-loved hotels has re-opened today under its original name, the Great Southern Killarney. More recently known as The Malton, the decision to revert to the old badge will no doubt be welcomed by many Killarney natives for whom the famous Great Southern was always an important local landmark. Owned by the Scally family since 2014, the historic grand-

dame-style hotel is part of the Hayfield Family Collection that includes the Killarney Royal and Hayfield Manor in Cork City. Over the past two years, the family-run company has invested in a major restoration programme. Celebrating the next chapter of the hotel - which first opened in 1854 - will be three generations of family including Joe and Margaret Scally and their children and grandchildren, along with the team who work in the hotel.

Could Your Dog Be The Star Of The Show? Producers of a major new tour of the smash-hit Broadway and West End show Legally Blonde The Musical are on the hunt for four-legged stars in Kerry. EastEnders’ Rita Simons and Bill Ward, star of Coronation Street and Emmerdale, are the human stars of the musical but there are also two dogs in the cast - a Chihuahua called Bruiser and another called Rufus. Bruiser is already cast and will be on the road with the cast but producers have decided to hold auditions for ‘Rufus’ in every town and city on the tour. Auditions are being held at the Gleneagle Hotel on Saturday, February 10. Associate Director David Barrett said:

“Legally Blonde The Musical is a show all about stereotypes and not judging a book by its cover and the dogs are no different in this. So whereas ‘Bruiser’ is the cute, tiny, adorable one, with ‘Rufus’ we are looking for the total opposite. We are looking for a big, brutish, dog that only its mother could love - preferably a Bull Dog as in the film but we are certainly open to options.” Based on the novel by Amanda Brown and the MGM motion picture, Legally Blonde The Musical will run at INEC Killarney from July 10–14. Interested parties are asked to email legallyblondedogauditions@gmail.com for application forms and full details.

“If I Was To Remove Myself From Risk I Would Stop Cycling Altogether” As a cyclist I read with dismay your opinion piece last week. The piece spoke about cyclist vulnerabilities and self-preservation, both of which are always at the forefront of my mind when I take to the roads. Way back in the 60s, 70s and 80s I cycled too but the world is a different place now. In the early 80s there were no roundabouts or traffic calming infrastructure in place because it was not necessary. Everything travelled slower and it was safer to cycle. Over the years I have had to adapt to these changes and learn how best to cope with the changes. I cycle these days with the Department of Transport, RSA, and Cycling Ireland’s ‘Cycle Right’ recommendations in mind. A bicycle is in Irish law a vehicle on our roads and has no greater or less importance than any other vehicle, so when I approach narrow pinch points, junctions or roundabouts I will ALWAYS take what is known as the ‘primary position’ on the road. I do this for two reasons: first, to deliberately discourage any following traffic from trying to pass too closely and second, to put myself in the position where I will be seen by following traffic. This is fully endorsed and recommended by ‘Cycle Right’, not for fun, not to annoy other motorists but purely for safety. As soon as I am clear of such areas I will ALWAYS pull to the left and try to facilitate overtaking. If I am cycling in a group the group will ALWAYS be two abreast in such areas for the very same reasons and we will always pull left to facilitate safe passing at 1.5m as per recommendations from the

RSA. This is by far the best way for us cyclists to “stay out of harm’s way”. Before I learnt the ‘Cycle Right’ way, I was way too many times skimmed by centimetres because motorists just will not have a few seconds’ patience to allow me safely through pinch points. Since I adopted the ‘Cycle Right’ training I am always much safer. The only time I wasn’t was once when a taxi van driver thought it was the right thing to do to drive to within inches of me and sound his horn, just to save ten seconds. Your opinion talks of removing myself from risk. If I was to remove myself from risk I would stop cycling altogether and why stop cycling? I would stop driving 50,000km a year to earn a living. Yes there is an element of risk in cycling, in sharing roads with big metal boxes with vast stores of destructive kinetic energy but I choose to cycle. Because of growing aggression I personally always have two cameras on my bike, both recording full HD video and I have on occasion brought video to our Garda to deal with aggressive drivers. I have yet to bring such evidence to our Garda to be told to go away and not be annoying them. I am very disappointed by your publication of such an ill-informed piece which in essence has the effect of say “GET OUT OF THE WAY”. It is neither researched or correct on many levels and I hope that now that you have been supplied with the relevant information that you will correct the record. Brendan Cassidy, Killarney

Cyclists Must Protect Themselves First And Foremost Words: Cormac Casey

First of all, I would like to thank Brendan for his letter. I actually agree 100% with what he is saying and both of our perspectives have a common thread: the cyclist is vulnerable. With regards to the rules of the road and the ‘Cycle Right’ way of cycling, to which he refers in his response, he is absolutely correct. But the rules only work if they’re strictly adhered to. In the particular set of circumstances I wrote about last week, I specifically didn’t want to draw attention to this group however, in my defence, I have to as it was the basis for my concerns for their general safety. The group of six or seven cyclists were two abreast, which they are entitled to do, but they were staggered and weaving. The man in front, who was most displeased when I asked him to go ‘single file’, was actually almost in the middle of the road at this point and weaved crossed the line of traffic behind me as he was turning right. Basically he put himself between two moving cars. I would have pealed off to the left and waited for a safe gap in the three lanes of traffic to cross. I cycle this route myself. As for the group, from my experience keeping your line and keeping to the wheel of the cyclist in front will greatly reduce the distraction for the oncoming motorist. One large smooth moving group is far easier to focus on rather than six or seven individuals busily moving in slightly different directions.

Everyone is entitled to use the road but we must all use it respectfully. I believe that it is the responsibility of the cyclist to protect themselves first and foremost. I think cyclists, who are the most vulnerable road user, should make a risk assessment based on their chosen route and time of day. I cycle myself and when it was formed I was actually the third member of the Killarney Cycling Club. When we went out cycling in those early days, we always chose our routes based on how safe they would be and how much traffic we would encounter. I attended Pat McQuaid’s training camps covering 1,000kms per week and all of those routes were pre-planned and followed a strict code of cycling. We were always told that car is much bigger than you so if one comes, give way at the first opportunity. I also believe that it is common courtesy to give way to fast-moving traffic. Maybe that is an overdeveloped sense of self-preservation, but I would prefer to be that way rather than seriously injured or worse. When I get the chance to cycle these days, which unfortunately isn’t as often as I’d like, I apply that same logic. I have never had any issue with a motorist. However, that is not to say the motorist is innocent in this debate. Hopefully this conversation creates further much-needed debate and heightens awareness about cyclists’ safety and we look forward to hearing more from Brendan in the future.

Ulick Drives Away In Brand New Car €25,000 windfall for winners in Killarney Credit Union members draw. There were smiles all around at the Beech Road Credit Union last Saturday when Farranfore native Ulick O’Sullivan dropped by to pick up the keys to his brand new car. Ulick, who now resides in Dublin, got a surprise call last week and was notified that he had won a brand new Ford Fiesta in the Killarney Credit Union Members Draw. €25,000 worth of prizes were handed out in all - ranging from €250 to €1,000 - and Ulick was the lucky one in 2,500 entrants to claim the star prize. The cash prize-winners were Mary Quirke, Connie Brady, Joan Mulchinock, Tim O’Sullivan, Mary Mulcahy,

Noreen O’Donoghue, Julia Casey, Denis Cronin, Annette Sheehan, Eileen O’Shea, Olive Sheehy, Julie Payne and Mary T. O’Sullivan. Members can sign up for the competition at any Credit Union branch or by downloading an application form online at www.killarneycu.ie. €12 will be taken from your account twice a year as an entry fee. The next draw will take place in July. “The draw is limited to members of Killarney Credit Union and anyone over the age of 18 can apply to join, so we would encourage members to sign up if they haven’t already,” said marketing officer Karena O’Leary. “As the saying goes: if you’re not in, you can’t win.”

2017 was a remarkable year for Colm Cooper who led his club Dr Crokes to the All-Ireland Club Championship title in March. Crokes also went on to reclaim the Kerry Club Championship crown with victory over Kenmare before retaining their County Championship and County League titles with relative ease. Gooch was a central figure throughout the campaign and was Crokes’ top scorer in the championship, despite being unable to start the final due to injury. In spite of his fine form at club level, the Ardshanavooley native decided to step away from the Kerry fold in April. He bowed out as the leading Kerry scorer

of all time having led the Kingdom to five All-Ireland titles. It was a busy year for Cooper off the field as he released his autobiography in October and also established himself as a leading pundit on RTÉ’s GAA coverage. The prestigious Kerry Person of the Year award, which has been handed out by the Kerry Association in Dublin every year since 1979, recognises people who have shown leadership, provided exceptional service to the community and brought honour to their county. Former recipients include John B. Keane (1989), Micheál ó Muircheartaigh (1997) and Seán Kelly (2008).

Irishman To Be Deported From Boston

A 19-year-old Irishman who moved to America with his parents as a child is due to be deported to Ireland this week. Dylan O’Riordan was targeted by US immigration and jailed for outstaying his visa and is currently being held in Suffolk County House of Corrections in the Boston area. His parents both have green cards. The US government’s crackdown on illegal immigration intensified under President Donald Trump. There were over 33,000 more arrests of illegal immigrants in 2017, a 30% increase on the previous year.

FF: Varadkar Shows ‘Posh Boy Credentials’

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has been forced to clarify his comments in the Dáil during the week when he said that many people go to their parents to get the deposit for their first home. Fianna Fail’s housing spokesman Barry Cowen subsequently accused Varadkar of showing his “posh boy credentials”, which led to the Taoiseach revealing that he himself did not borrow money from his mother and father when he was a first time buyer. He said he was approved for a 40-year, 100% mortgage. He said he was “delighted at the time” but warned that a 100% mortgage was a “bad policy”.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around Film

‘Tradition’ Movie Trailer Released

The official trailer for feature length film ‘Tradition’ has been unveiled with a number of local landmarks – and people – making the final cut. The film, which was shot entirely in Killarney and its environs, is likely to

be released in April and if the preview is anything to go by, it should make very interesting viewing for the people of Killarney. ‘Tradition’ is the brainchild of local writer/director Damien O’Callaghan,

whose work also includes well-received independent feature The Gift. This movie revolves around District Court Judge Seamus Moynihan who finds himself presiding over the biggest case his court, and the town of

Killarney, has ever seen. The film stars Paul Ronan (father of Saoirse), Pascal Scott, James Daly, Laura Reidy, Brendan Grace while popular RTÉ presenter Marty Morrissey also makes a cameo.

Trump went as far as to say that he was “looking forward” to it, subject to the advice of his lawyers. “I am looking forward to it, actually,” Trump said, before presenting a snippet of what his much-anticipated testimony might sound like. “Here is the story: There has been no collusion whatsoever. There is no obstruction whatsoever,” Trump said. Investigators are trying to assess if the Trump campaign did in fact work with Moscow to influence the election in his fa-

Worst TB Outbreak In Living Memory

Kerry farmers are currently dealing with a severe outbreak of TB, the likes of which haven’t been seen in decades. Around 45 herds in South Kerry are currently locked up with tuberculosis and there is no sign of the problem slowing down, according to the Irish Farmers’ Association’s Kerry chairman Pat O’Driscoll. The outbreak, which has been an issue since 2016, affected 75 herds on the Iveragh Peninsula in 2017 and led to 360 cattle being

removed for slaughter. More than 150 concerned farmers attended an emergency meeting in Cahersiveen last week. At the meeting, which was organised by the local branch of the IFA, senior vets from the Department of Agriculture gave an overview of the current situation on the peninsula and outlined a plan of action to tackle the outbreak. Approximately 90% of farms in the region remain unscathed however, a statistic which has led some locals to call for calm.

want to talk about and understand. In a course on literature, do I think you should use technology a lot? Probably not.” Cook also revealed his opposition to children using social networks, revealing he doesn’t allow his nephew to partake. He continued: “I don’t have a kid, but I have a nephew that I put some boundaries on. There are some things that I won’t allow; I don’t want them on a social network.” Cook didn’t offer any reasons for the social network ban. Does he know something that we don’t?

Apple Tax Collected Within Months

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said Ireland will start collecting tax from Apple “within months” after the European Commission’s ruling that the multinational tech giant availed of preferential tax treatment from the Irish Government. However, he said Ireland disputed the case and would be able to “prove” in the European Court of Justice that there was no special deal with Apple. In 2016 the European Commis-

sion’s competition arm ordered Ireland to claw back €13 billion in what it regarded as unpaid taxes from Apple. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mr Varadkar said: “We will collect it. What we had to do in order to collect it was set up an escrow account. That’s been established now and we anticipate collecting money in Q2 this year, so we will collect the money, but we are absolutely disputing the case.

Legislation passed in the Dáil yesterday will allow the sale of alcohol on Good Friday for the first time since 1927. It is expected to be signed into law by the President before Easter of 2018. The Minister of State David Stanton, who introduced the bill, said tourism was a key factor to consider. “Tourism makes a much greater contribution to our economy and this is particularly true during holidays, such as the busy Easter period,” he said. “In addition changing demographics and increasing diversity in our population have led to a reduction in traditional religious practice. Taking all these factors into consideration the Government con-

sidered that it was an opportune time to have an examination of the Good Friday restrictions. Fianna Fáil’s Jim O’Callaghan said the provision should now be removed as people often found ways of circumventing the ban regardless. Although reaction to the new law has been overwhelmingly positive, Independent TD Mattie McGrath was one politician who said he would be opposing the change. The Tipperary native says publicans had told him that Good Friday is the only day when publicans can “take a breather”. “The tourists won’t run away because they can’t get a drink on Good Friday,” he said.

Mourinho To Stay At Man Utd Until 2020 Portuguese manager José Mourinho has committed his future to Manchester United by signing a contract that will keep him at the club until 2020. The deal also includes the option of extending the contract for an extra year. Mourinho led United to Europa League glory in is debut season at the club and his side are currently second in the Premier League behind runaway leaders and bitter rivals Manchester City. “His work rate and professionalism are ex-

ceptional and he has embraced the club’s desire to promote top quality young players to the first team,” said executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. “He has brought an energy and a sense of purpose to everything that he does and I am sure that will continue to bring results for the fans and the club.” Speaking at the press conference, Mourinho confirmed that new signing Alexis Sánchez go straight into the squad for tonight’s FA Cup tie against League 2 minnows Yeovil Town.

He narrowly missed out on the F1 title, finishing as runner-up on four occasions, and is widely regarded as the greatest driver never to win the world championship. Moss only officially retired from motor racing in 2011.

Last Minute Tips For Filling Out Your CAO Form ALTHOUGH the early bird deadline of January 20 has passed for the online CAO application process, there is still plenty of time for students to register for college entry in 2018. The normal closing date for applications is February 1 at 5.15pm. Students who have registered before January 20 have until January 31 to add in or make changes to their course choices. This is a very busy time for students as they prepare for pre-exams so the pressure of trying to decide on courses can bring added stress. It is important

to remember that the ‘change of mind’ facility will open on May 5 until July 1, which will allow students to amend their choices. But this is not the case for all courses. Students applying for “restricted courses” must list such courses before the February 1 deadline as these courses involve early assessments such as portfolios, interviews, auditions and aptitude tests which usually take place from February to April. In many cases the marks allocated in such assessments are added to the applicant’s CAO points score in August during the offer of places.

Students who wish to apply for medicine will need to apply for the HPAT by February 1 (late registration) as the test takes place nationwide on February 24. Mature students who are applying for nursing must include this on the CAO form by February 1 and must also complete a separate assessment test, which is carried out by the Public Appointments Service, between February 2 and 22. It is important to check all

By John Healy JP Healy & Co Insurances ltd

Being involved in a car accident can be a traumatic experience. While vehicle damage can be repaired or replaced the health and well being of all passengers should be paramount. Here are some pointers if you are in this position • Stay calm and try to assess any casualties • Do not move the injured • Call emergency services • Call the Gardai before you move any vehicles • Swap the following details with the other party, Name, Address and phone numbers, Registration numbers, Insurance policy numbers (check the insurance disc) and Licence numbers • If a Garda attends the scene make sure you record his name and barracks • Note if there are any witnesses and record their names and numbers • Take photos of the area with your phone (if not available try to write it down) note where the cars ended up and their position on the road, the weather conditions & visibility, and number/ages of passengers in all vehicles. • Do not discuss liability at the scene of the accident. You are only obliged to discuss this with a Garda or your insurers. Road traffic act law is a complex area and liability is best left to your insurers to determine. • Contact your Broker or Insurer as soon as you can Some policies can arrange courtesy cars and/or a tow-in service. • If you are involved in an accident with a visiting motorist from outside the country, report the accident to your insurance company and also to the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland, 3/4 South Frederick Street, Dublin 2. REDUNDANCY

Where you lose your job due to circumstances such as the closure of a business or reduction in a number of staff, this is known as redundancy. The Redundancy Payment Act 1967 – 2014 provides a minimum entitlement for redundancy payment for employees who have a set period of service with the Employer. Not all Employees are entitled to a statutory redundancy payment even where a redundancy situation exists. Where you do qualify for redundancy there are specific redundancy procedures which Employers and Employees must follow to comply with the legislation. It is of course open to an Employer to agree a redundancy payment above the statutory minimum. The statutory redundancy payment is a lump sum based on the pay of the Employee. All eligible Employees are entitled to two weeks pay for every week of service together with one further weeks pay. The amount of statutory redundancy is subject to a maximum earning limit of €600.00 per week. The statutory redundancy payment is tax free. When calculating the length of service, the period you were actually working is calculated together with any holidays,

time off due to illness or time spent absent from work under various leaves including adoptive, maternity, parental and carers leave and paternity leave. On the date of the termination of employment, your Employers should pay the redundancy lump sum due to you. If the Employer has not paid the said sum then you should apply to your Employer using the correct and appropriate forms. These forms may be completed online. Further information can be obtained from the Workplace Relations Commission. In the event that an Employer is not in a position financially to discharge the redundancy sum an application may be made to the Social Insurance Fund. Legal advice should be obtained to ensure compliance with the relevant statutory requirements in respect of redundancy situations. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. 26.01.18 Netflix - How To Get Away With Murder

The Academic - Tales From The Backseat Established in 2013, the Mullingar four-piece have been making waves on Ireland’s indie scene for several years. The band have finally dropped their debut album, ‘Tales From The Backseat’. From the first few seconds of the

opening track Permanent Vacation, it is clear what’s in store, as you’re dragged head-first into The Academic’s driving, pop-punk sound. It’s a whirlwind of upbeat, hook-driven tunes that evoke the youthful energy of early work by The Strokes and The Kooks.

On The Box

For the last week, we here in the Killarney Advertiser office have been absolutely hooked on binge watching the extremely popular murder who done it series How To Get Away With Murder! The critically acclaimed series was created by Peter Nowalk, and produced by Shonda Rhimes, well known for creating Grey’s Anatomy and stars Oscar winning actress Viola Davis as Annalise Keating, a law professor at a prestigious Philadelphia university who, with five of her students, becomes entwined in a murder plot. As the series progresses it introduces occasional clients for Keating, as well as exploring two related murders through both flashback and flashforward sequences. At the moment, the first 3 seasons are available to watch on Netflix but just a word of warning, if you start watching you might not be able to stop until you finish all 3 seasons. Addictive viewing!

NEW TRENDS FOR 2018

W

elcome to a new year of Home and Living. It feels like Christmas was so long ago! Heading into February, all our New Year’s resolutions long-forgotten, it’s time to take a fresh look at our homes and see how we can make them work better for us in 2018. We’ve looked at all the trend predictions for this year and splashes of colour are coming back with a bang, greenery is still in our lives (but with a twist) as is Pantone’s colour of the year, Ultra Violet (what a shocker - or is it?). We show you how to incorporate it into your home. Kadri Bormeister shares the colour you should paint your walls this year and her predicors for 2018 in Interior trends. Do you have a project planned for your home in 2018? Being at home over Christmas my list has tripled - unfortunately my bank balance hasn’t! So I’m starting small: a cushion from Scatter Box which I’ve had my eye on (available from Corcoran’s) and a print from April. The bear on it says, “I don’t know what I want but I want it so bad”. It says it all really.

Pantone Colour of the year

Pantone’s 2017 wild Colour of the Year, Greenery, was a bit of a shock to the system and this year they have surprised us all again with another provocative hue, Pantone 183838 Ultra Violet. Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute, said: “The Pantone Colour of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design’; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today”. Pressman used words like inventiveness, imagination and creative inspiration when describing this colour and we can certainly agree that all of the above will be required to work such a regal tone into our lives. Skeptical about how to utilize this controversial colour in your home? Check out the creative ways these designers have used Ultra Violet as an accent, paint color and more. We advise baby steps - maybe a cushion throw or some purple tulips - but we are loving the idea of a purple sofa, bringing into play another trend for 2018 “pops of colour to deneautralise all that grey”.

Home & Living - January 26, 2018

TOP INTERIOR TRENDS FOR 2018 I tend to ignore trends, which means sometimes I'm 'in' and sometimes I'm 'out. To me, trends are just an opportunity for people to see what's new out there in the world, maybe colours or shapes you hadn’t thought about, but, at the end of the day, what looks best in your home and what feels best to your soul is what counts. So listen to the trends and use the one you think will improve your home. Curved Furniture The tide is slowly starting to turn from rectangular sharp lines to an influx of softer edge, shapely or circular, swiveling chairs, round cushions, and sloped mirrors. Arches in general are also appearing in both décor as well as architecture, like an opening to a room or an arched wall niche. The look is glamorous and a little unexpected. No doubt about it, we're embracing the curves. And we're totally on board. Pic: Astoria sofa Fama available from Moriarty’s Furniture, Killorglin and Killarney Furniture and Carpets. Dark Kitchens There has been a huge swing toward darker kitchens, black, dark gray, and navy, and natural woods are coming back strongly - more natural, lighter woods than the heavily stained ones from our past. Greenery Greenery is the Pantone colour of 2017 and it’s staying in our lives in the form of plants. Plants are an awesome way to decorate your space by adding pretty color, and fun planters with the added bonus of being good for your health.

Black and White Black and white patterns, prints, as well as home decor accessories were spotted in Paris, Madrid, and Lisbon, creating a fresh and updated vibe for interiors. An awesome way to create newness in your home is by adding graphic decorative pillows ceramics for your table and or a crisp new set of sheets that inspire a bold bedding vibe. Tonal Reds Red is energising. It excites the emotions and motivates us to take action. So why not update your interiors with a little warm and positive vibe? Tonal red doesn't mean just one tone. Try adding tonalities of tangerine and coral to your red revival to soften the look, or just be bold and use red on its own. Teal Not a fan of black and white? Try adding teal to the mix for a new fashion flair. Teal is a rising colour trend and sure to be seen in all the best interiors for 2018. Be sure to use several shades of teal for depth.

Millennial Pink Millennial Pink is not going anywhere in 2018. It's all over Paris in some creative and updated ways. Want to make the trendy hue feel fresh for 2018? The newest way to decorate with Millennial Pink is by mixing it with berry. Add some fake fur or some awesome fringe for unique detailing. Sage Sage is slated to be the new neutral replacing the likes of pure white, beige and stone. When paired with woods and soft whites, this muted green colour with grey undertones will warm up any space while still keeping a quite neutral backdrop. But remember trends come and go, pick and choose from trends. What matters first and foremost is what you want, need, love, feel good with and feel attached to. Work with that first, and then the actual space is second. Listen to your house, it will tell you what it needs to feel good.

Home & Living - January 26, 2018

By KADRI BORMEISTER'S

Interior colour trends for 2018 The year 2018 welcomes glamour, luxury and warmth. Metallics This trend is reflected in interiors by the use of metallic decorative elements. Mix rose gold with any other metals, brass, gold, silver or copper. These shiny surfaces are making a comeback. Introduce metallics in to your home with glitzy furniture, mirrors or simpy by kitchen utensils. Mauve - Heather Mauve is a must-have colour to be used in your interior scheme. Whether it is an occasional chair, curtain fabric or a bedroom wall paint. Mauve (muted purple, think of heather, plum, lavender) can look quite sophisticated when combined with navy. Think of mauve colour walls in a sitting room themed with a deep blue velvet sofa. Sounds very chic, doesn't it? For a softer and more feminine look pair mauve with grey. Blue-grey and Green-grey The grey interiors are gone, the new on-trend grey is with an undertone of either green or blue. Think of a mud green, sage and olive green type of colours. The blue-grey can be seen during rainy days. They are uber-elegant colours to be used on walls, bedlinen or as curtain fabric colour. Yellow Be it a bright sunshine yellow, mustard or citrus yellow,it is a happy, vibrant and joyful colour. It is the happiest of colours. It is the perfect accent colour for cushions, rugs and lampshades. Yellow, mustard or lemon colours work well with blue and greengrey. Yellow is one of the key fashion and interior colours for spring 2018.

Clock and Mirror from Hal Lou Furniture

Emerald Green It is lively, radiant and luxurious. It has been the colour of beauty and growth in many cultures and religions. Green enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony. It is an ideal accent colour to spice up a tired looking scheme. Perhaps it is time to update a floor matt, foot stool or a side table?

Around Foot Health

YOUR feet take a beating every day. If they start to hurt, you need to take that foot pain and any other problems seriously. Healthy feet are vital for mobility. In their lifetime, the average person walks approximately 100,000 miles. But all too often we do not place the same emphasis on looking after our feet as we do on other parts of our body. Keeping your feet healthy should be part of your daily routine. As we age, we naturally develop more problems with our feet due to normal daily wear and tear of joints but also because the skin starts to become thin, loses its elasticity as well as becoming dry and much more fragile. Ageing can also mean that we develop other conditions, such as diabetes and arthritis, which in some cases can affect the foot and may require treatment. Healing can also take longer. Keeping active and on the move helps to keep feet healthy. It tones up muscles, helps to strengthen

Time For Change

In With The Old & Make It As Good As New

Two phrases have been going around in my head these last few days: ‘Out with the old and in with the new’ and ‘Reduce, re-use, recycle’. January is a great month to make plans for the coming year. Our minds have so many ideas and aspirations flying around in them but, I wonder, what happens to the ideas that end up in the recycling bin? Like a lot of the most precious and beautiful things in life, some sparks of genius can get thrown out with the rubbish. My mother is a great believer in keeping pretty little things because “they’ll be very handy one day”. I usually laugh at her for doing this and think it’s pointless but, so often when I’ve needed something really specific, my mother comes up with the goods in seconds! So maybe we shouldn’t forget last year’s castaway ideas?

200g bulgur wheat 1 bunch celery 1 dessert apple juice 1 lemon 4 tbsp olive oil handful toasted hazelnuts, roughly chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped large handful pomegranate seeds small bunch parsley, chopped small bunch mint, chopped small bunch tarragon, chopped

3 5 7 7 2 6 1 5

METHOD

Put the bulgur wheat in a large bowl and just cover with boiling water. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave for 30 minutes to absorb all the water. Meanwhile, separate the sticks of celery and set the leaves aside. Very finely slice the celery and roughly chop the leaves. Cut the apple into fine matchsticks and toss in a little lemon juice. In a bowl, mix the remaining lemon juice with the oil and some seasoning to make a dressing. Gently fluff up the bulgur with a fork. Mix the sliced celery and apple through the bulgur, followed by the nuts, chilli, pomegranate seeds and herbs. Drizzle over the dressing and toss everything together gently. Scatter with the celery leaves and serve.

Garden Magic

Conifers:

The Backbone Of Your Garden Plants are like clothes: they come into fashion, they fade into obscurity, and then they come back with a makeover! However, one plant, or rather, a whole family, seems to have been forgotten about by many gardeners, which is a shame. What is that family, you might ask? Conifers. The entire world of conifers is there to be treasured, valued and planted, yet I see few people buying them! In my opinion conifers form the backbone of a garden. I could not do without them. They fill spaces, give consistent colour, be it as a background to flowering plants in the summer, or feature plants in the winter, and, very importantly, they are excellent for use in flower arrangements! Conifers come in every size, shape, colour and texture imaginable, and can be used in any part of the garden, be it a border, rockery or arboretum. So, in this vast landscape of conifers, which to choose? Go for the unusual! To many people the word conifer is synonymous with Leylandii – the hedging palm as it is often referred to. Forget about them, unless you need a fast growing hedge! Let us start with trees, and work down to miniature shrubs. Metasequoia is one of my favourite trees. Better known as the Dawn Redwood, it is native to China and was reported as an extinct species in 1940. Luckily small clusters of living trees were subsequently found and cultivated. It is a fast-growing tree initially but slows down when it reaches about 10m. I have a cluster of them. After 10 years they have grown to about 7 meters in what I

can only call adverse conditions! They have feathery bright green foliage, which they lose in the winter, and a scaly orange bark. Abies koreana is a small tree, an excellent choice as a specimen. They have dark green foliage and violet coloured cones. Abies koreana keeps a perfectly conical shape and is quite slow-growing. Pine trees are hardy trees which provide fantastic shelter and generally do not mind waterlogged soil. Pinus nigra, the European black pine, is an easy to grow, reliable tree. It is dome shaped and a deep green, with midsized cones. For anyone who is looking for a midsized shrub, I would recommend Pinus mugo or pumila, both dwarf pine trees. They are hardy, and do not grow tall - ever! They bear small cones and can be cut back without it affecting their shape. Picea glauca ‘Daisy white’ is a small cone-shaped ornamental shrub whose new shoots in the spring are a bright pale green, almost white. It is traditionally used in pots or as a small focal point. Picea glauca ‘Sander’s Blue’ is a new favourite of mine. It has slate blue needles and does best in a sunny spot. The colour really is stunning. I have only touched on the different conifers out there but I hope I have inspired you to give one a spot in your garden!

and consistently put his Fiesta in places it had no right to be. A win in Portugal was the second and final win of the year, and yet Ogier romped away with his fifth title. Ogier’s ability to play the numbers game like nobody else, knowing when to push and when to hold back with his Fiesta playing to his tune. It was the most consistent, reliable car in the field. The Hyundai proved to be fragile, Toyota was still in development and Citroen was undriveable. 12 months on M-Sport has increased Ford backing so its underdog status is no longer as valid. Ogier has also had his first proper winter testing so the Monte will not be the unknown like last year. Citroen has a point to prove and Meeke and Nagle have the speed, Hyundai will be more robust, and Toyota have the talented Tanak. Qgier won’t have it his own way. It is the makings of another exciting season.

WRC Is Back

Monte Carlo hosts the World Rally Championship season opening round this weekend. Irish rally fans will be tracking the progress of Paul Nagle, navigator to Kris Meeke, and Waterford man Craig Breen, both competing again this year for the Citroen WRC team. 12 months ago, Ogier silenced his doubters by winning his fifth consecutive championship with privateers M-Sport. Joining M-Sport he had nowhere to hide putting his Fiesta in a ditch early on Friday, but he bounced back in true Ogier-style. His main rival Neuville crashing out of the rally lead and typically it was Ogier who was best-placed to pounce, scooping up a maiden win on his M-Sport debut. Monte was a perfect microcosm of Ogier’s 2017 season. He wasn’t the quickest, topping only three of Monte’s 15 stages. Ogier stole Neuville’s win in the season opener

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication. M.C

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH

MURPHY

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit You make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I in this short dialogue I want to thank you for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual Glory. Amen. (Say this prayer three consecutive days without stating the request, after the 3rd day the request will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your request is granted.)

Free-Scoring Lakers Overpower Titans Of Galway With just four league games remaining, Scotts Lakers have a great chance of winning the Shield, writes club PRO Eamonn Keogh

National League: Division 1B Galway Titans 69 Scotts Lakers 113 SCOTTS Lakers cruised to their biggest win of the season with an emphatic 44-point win over Galway Titans at Coláiste Iognaid, Galway, last Sunday. Just as the scoreline suggests, the Killarney side dominated this match throughout to record a victory that keeps them top of the Division 1B table. Titans were forced to line out without big American Keegan Ryan and his loss severely diminished their ability to match up to the physically stronger Scotts Lakers side. The Lakers dominated under the boards from an early stage and were well in control during the first quarter. Leading 37-22 midway through the second, the Killarney side stayed in front to lead 51-28 at half-time. Titans struggled to close the gap throughout

the second half as Scotts Lakers continued their scoring spree, adding another 62 points on the scoreboard. Team Coach Cormac O’Donoghue ran his full bench and got a great all round team performance from his squad with five players on double scoring figures. Antuan Bootle led the way with 28 points followed by Andrew Fitzgerald (21), Dan Griffin (18), Dailian Mason (14) and Cian Clernon (10). There were also notable contributions from Mark Greene (9), Paul Clarke (6), Philip O’Connor (5), Con O’Mahony (2) and Shane Horgan. Galway Titans top scorers were Toms Fabriciuss (30) and Rando Kozlov (19), while Eoin Coughlan, son of former Killarney basketball supremo Joe Coughlan, added another 19 points. With just four league games remaining, Scotts Lakers are in with a great chance of topping the Division 1B table and challenging for the Shield title. They are free for the next two weeks before travelling to play Sligo All Stars on February 10. Big home games against LYIT Donegal (February 17) and Kilkenny (March 4) and an away game against Dublin Lions (February 24) will determine how Scotts Lakers finish the season.

n1 National League: Divisio 28 at 2pm Sunday, January l Kerry v Donega m) (Fitzgerald Stadiu

Kerry v Donegal:

Kerry selector Mikey Sheehy has branded Kerry’s support as “shocking”. Pics: Brendan Moran.

5 Things To Watch Out For 1. Clifford set to make his debut There has surely never been a more hotly anticipated Kerry debut. David Clifford grabbed national headlines in 2017 with a string of remarkable outings with the Kerry minors, most notably his four-goal masterclass in the All-Ireland Final, and it now appears as though the prodigious youngster is all set to make his first ever appearance for the Kerry seniors. Not for the first time in his fledgling career, all eyes will be on Clifford. 2. New faces At the end of last season, Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice was criticised in certain quarters for not introducing enough young talent to the fold. Only he will know if these complaints had any real effect on his thinking but there definitely seems to be a fresher look to the 2018 Kerry panel. Apart from Clifford, Kenmare forward Seán O’Shea is also expected to feature prominently. A number of other stars from the successful minor and under 21 teams of the last few years are part of the set-up and some are likely to get their chance against Donegal. With all the new faces in the squad, it’s very difficult to predict how Kerry will line out - and perform - on Sunday. 3. Can Kerry retain their crown? Last April’s superb league final victory over Dublin was the highlight of Kerry’s year and players and fans will be hoping for more of the same in 2018. Finally beating the Dubs was a real monkey off the back

and, although the defeat to Mayo in the All-Ireland semi-final replay put a huge damper on things, more league success would set Kerry up well for the Championship. 4. How many Kerry fans will turn up? It might sound like an unusual question but selector Mikey Sheehy was vocal in his criticism of Kerry fans in recent weeks, calling their support in last year’s semi-final replay “shocking”. The spotlight will be on Kerry fans this year and it will be interesting to see how many people travel to games throughout the league campaign. Sunday’s match is at home in Killarney so a decent crowd, by league standards, is expected. Kerry fans have a well-deserved reputation for only showing up to “big” games, there’s no doubt about that, but there is also an onus on the team to perform and get fans excited. 5. Donegal hoping for an improved 2018 2017 came to an inauspicious end for Donegal when they crashed out in Round 4 of the qualifiers. The defeat to Galway in Markiewicz Park in July will have left a very sour taste in the mouth as the 2012 champions completely fell apart, eventually losing by a whopping 15-points (0-14 to 4-17). This certainly seems to be a side in demise: last year was the first time they failed to make at least the Ulster Final and the quarter final of the All-Ireland since 2010. Their form in last year’s league campaign had been more promising. They recovered from an opening day loss to Kerry in Letterkenny to finish joint sec-

ond on eight points with Kerry, Monaghan and Mayo, the Kingdom advancing to the final thanks to their superior points difference. The league will be a good platform to build momentum before the ultra-competitive Ulster Championship.

It was a disappointing result in the end but Cedar will learn a lot from this game, writes Adam Moynihan

Limerick Champs Too Strong For Brave Galaxy There was no cup magic for Cedar Galaxy on Sunday as they succumbed to a heavy defeat to Limerick champions Janesboro in the last 32 of the Munster Junior Cup. Cedar were massive underdogs but they went toe-to-toe with Boro for a good half an hour and impressed onlookers with their shape and positive playing style. Unfortunately they just couldn’t keep the visitors’ classy forward line at bay and a flurry of goals meant they went in three-nil down at the break. Janesboro continued to impress in the second half and showed Killarney’s youngest soccer club no mercy, eventually racking up ten goals in a wonderful exhibition of fluid, attacking football. Irish international Shane Clarke was in

O’Regan: We worked hard but they’re elite players particulararly fine form as he bagged a hattrick and provided multiple assists, while his strike partner Keith Mawdsley also shone with four well-taken goals. The only consolation for Cedar was scoring the goal of the day when John Foley ran at the

Janesboro defence before rifling a superb strike straight into the top corner from 25 yards out. Speaking after the game, Cedar manager Darragh O’Regan said he was pleased with the way his team started. “For the first half an hour, we were in dreamland,” he reflected. “We were competing with the boys, we maybe slightly shaded the chances and played possibly a bit more than they did. But when they got the goal, the shackles came off.” “We’re a Division 3 team and the mistakes we made wouldn’t be punished in our division. I think they had 13 chances and they banged 10 of them. That’s fairly efficient.” It was that efficiency and the amount of talent in their squad that impressed O’Regan the most. “We worked very, very hard but they’re elite players. They’re players who

are close to playing League of Ireland. They have seven Irish junior internationals. There’s no weaknesses really in a team like that.” Despite the disappointing result, the Cedar boss said his team won’t be too disheartened by what transpired on Sunday. “You’ve got to remember, we’re a bunch of rejects from other clubs who came together and gave it a go,” he said. “We got out of Kerry and a lot of teams didn’t even have the b***s to enter the Munster Junior Cup. I’d like to think that any team who have played us in our division would have the utmost respect for us, and would realise that it’d take a decent side to beat us.” Team: David Kerins; Frank Cronin, Ger Foley, Mike Murphy, Gary Cassidy; Tadhg Fleming, Joe Hurley, James McCarrick, Joe Donovan; Hubert Dziedzic and John Foley. Subs: Michael Beckett, Mike Daly and Sam Treharne.

Inset: Cedar manager Darragh O’Regan gives some instructions to midfielder Joe Donovan.

Blues Through In KO Cup But League Form A Concern

Athletic defender Eanna Kavanagh in action in last year’s league final. Pic: Paudie Healy.

The reigning champions need to keep more clean sheets if they want a repeat of last year’s success, writes Killarney Athletic’s Adam Moynihan

Greyhound Bar KO Cup (1st Round) Killarney Athletic 5-0 Classic FC (Woodlawn) We’re happy to have safely advanced to the next round of the Greyhound although, realistically, we would have expected to beat Classic FC at home. They operate in the Premier B so we were strong favourites but, having said all that, they’re actually not a bad side. They’re definitely not afraid to try and play out from the back (their keeper back-heeled a goal kick out to the full back at one stage, which I have never seen before in my life) but they turned up shorthanded and once we got the early goal, you could see their heads drop a bit. Jamie Doolan (two), Seán Cournane, Shane Lynch and Ryan O’Carroll (tap-in) found the scoresheet and I suppose we did okay overall. It was nice to get a clean sheet anyway because we haven’t managed too many of them so far this season. If you look at our success last year, especially in the run-in, it was our ability to keep clean sheets that got us over the line. In our final six games, we kept five clean sheets. For whatever reason, we’ve found it hard to shut teams out this time around. We’re conceding too many goals, especially late in games when our forwards have no chance to respond. Eanna Kavanagh, who has only played a couple of games, is obviously a huge loss but we have plenty of strength in depth. Cillian O’Regan, Aidan O’Mahony and Shane Doolan have all played alongside

Paudie O’Connor at centre back and done well so it’s hard to put our finger on the problem. It’s definitely something that all of us at the back have to sort out quickly if we’re to have any hope of retaining the trophies we won last year. We have some really talented attacking players who consistently find the target so if we can get a bit of consistency at the other end, we should be fine. This weekend we’re playing Mastergeeha in the league and it’s obviously a game that we need to win. The last time we met, they held us for around 25 minutes but we got a couple of goals in quick succession and won fairly comfortably in the end. Geeha have suffered some heavy defeats in the

Premier A

league but, with Inter Kenmare already relegated and Tralee Dynamos struggling, they have a great chance of staying up. One or two results against the teams at the top could be enough to keep them in the division. They certainly have enough about them to cause an upset so we’ll need to be tuned in from the off. It’s supposed to be a home fixture for us but our pitch has taken a bit of a beating recently and could do with a break. There are talks of playing it in Mastergeeha, which wouldn’t be too bad from our point of view as it’s close and it’s normally a decent surface. Either way, we’ll be looking for three points and hopefully another clean sheet on Sunday.

Super Celts In Seventh Heaven The Hoops are through to the last 16 following another dominant home win, writes Killarney Athletic’s Adam Moynihan

Munster Junior Cup (Last 32) Killarney Celtic 7-2 Ballingarry (Celtic Park)

A

hat-trick from veteran striker Peter McCarthy helped Celtic to a convincing win over Ballingarry of Limerick in the last 32 of the Munster Junior Cup last Saturday evening. Wayne Sparling (two), Matt Keane and Anthony O’Leary also found the target as the Kerrymen made light work of the Desmond League leaders to secure their passage to the next round. Their opponents in the last 16 will be either Waterford Crystal or Munster Senior League side Youghal United with the game, which will be away

from home, scheduled to take place on February 10/11. This will need to be rearranged, however, as Celtic are in FAI Junior Cup action that weekend. Speaking after the Ballingarry game, Celtic’s hattrick hero Peter McCarthy said the team were just happy to be in the hat for the last 16. “It was a fine performance, individually and collectively,” he said. “We worked hard as a team and look, all you can ask for is a win and to get into the next round. So we’re very pleased.” There were question marks surrounding McCarthy’s third goal with some teammates suggesting that he didn’t get a touch on Matt Keane’s cross, but the experienced forward had no hesitation in claiming the goal. “[It was my goal] all day long. If you get a touch, it’s your goal. End of story! It was a nice assist by Matt. We’ll give him that. It worked out well for him after, he got a fine finish so I’d say he’ll be pleased enough with that.” Celtic have a busy few weeks coming up with a lot of big fixtures in quick succession, so how high is the Munster Junior in their list of priorities? “It’s up there with the league, the FAI and the Greyhound,” McCarthy said. “We’re taking them all as seriously as each other. They’re our main competitions and we just want to work hard as a unit and win as much silverware as possible.” Reflecting on the season so far, McCarthy says Celtic are “very happy” with how things have been progressing. “I think we’re a lot stronger from last year. We’re in the last 16 of the FAI, the last 16 of the Munster Junior and we’re second in the league with games in hand. We’re in a healthy position.” Celtic are back in Premier A action this weekend

as they host fellow title contenders Castleisland on Sunday morning. Remarkably, it will be their first home league game of the 2017/18 season. To this point they have played four away games and received two walkovers from Inter Kenmare, who pulled out of the league in October.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy LAST SUNDAY saw our proud provincial side Munster make history in the last pool stage of the European Cup. It was 50/50 as to whether or not the game would go ahead due to the torrential rain that had engulfed the country and Limerick in particular. Thomond Park was pretty much waterlogged and the groundsmen worked tirelessly to save the fixture. The referee, Ben Whitehouse, wanted to delay kick-off by and hour but eventually decided that 4pm would be a better time, delaying the original kick-off by three hours. Fans emptied the stadium and later returned in the final hope the match would go ahead, and that it did. Munster were utterly dominant as they searched for the bonus point win that would earn them a home draw in the quarter final, a bonus point they duly earned. Keith Earls was the stand out player as the men in red trounced Castres and sealed home advantage, which will be a record 17th quarter-final in the European Cup. Next up

the lads face a much sterner test from Toulon on Easter weekend. I’m sure hen’s teeth will be easier to find than tickets for the quarter final, which will undoubtedly be another sell-out in Thomond Park. In other news, Ulster bowed out of the European Cup losing 26 – 7 to Wasps while Irish hopes remained alive with

Leister topping their pool and winning 14-23 away at Montpellier. Without a doubt the next round will be a tough affair with Munster hosting Toulon and Leinster hosting Saracens, more than likely at the Aviva. An exciting final few stages to the European Champions Cup remain and we all hope the men in red will fire on and bring the glory home.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club The recent inclement weather with Storms Fionn and Georgina mixed in with our usual bad weather at this time of year has resulted in our Killeen Course remaining closed since Christmas-time. This has resulted in our Mahony’s Point Course receiving heavier than normal playing and despite this, the very good condition of the Course has been very favourably commented on by those who were brave enough to battle the elements over that period. This was never more true than on last Sunday, when despite atrocious weather conditions almost 100 brave souls tackled Mahony’s Point in one of our Club sponsored stableford competitions. As the morning wore on the conditions worsened which caused many of those playing to retire to the sanctuary of the Clubhouse and to enjoy some light refreshments. It must be said that Enda Murphy and his Course up-keeping staff have worked very hard on our behalf in keeping the Course in such great condition, and they are deserving of our fulsome praise and appreciation. Those who played on, and finished their round produced some remarkable scores despite those dreadful playing weather conditions, and the first three players all registered the same score of an incredible 36 Points. The winner by virtue of a better back few holes was Neil Coffey, and with a handicap of just 6 he produced the winning score, and in 2nd place was Ex-Officio Captain Declan McCarthy, who had his best competition result for quite some time, and in 3rd place was Louis Holland a regular prize-winner over the years. Full results were 1st Neil Coffey(6) 36 Pts. 2nd Declan McCarthy(10) 36 Pts. 3rd Louis Holland(14) 36 Pts. 4th Michael Maher(6)35 Pts. 5th Jason Dinham(14) 35 Pts. Cat.1

Baden Maher(5) 33 Pts. Cat.2 David Moloney(8) 32 Pts. Cat.3 Brendan Brosnan(13) 34 Pts. Cat 4 John Coffey(20) 32 Pts. Standard Scratch 35 Pts reduction only.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club The Club was in attendance at the recent Lough Lein Working Group, chaired by Kerry County Council, in Killarney. Along with our colleagues in Lough Lein Anglers, the concerns regarding invasive species was outlined from the angling perspective and this matter will be followed up in subsequent meetings to ensure the maximum amount of exposure is given to this concerning topic. A detailed synopsis of water quality measurements was given by David Lenihan, Senior Executive Chemist with KCC, for 2017. While the general trend on Lough Lein since 1998 has been a steady improvement and since 2009 an annual average phosphorous level of not greater that 12 ug/L has been sustained, ie 10 in 2017 - a slight deterioration in status due to increased chlorophyll values (max 15ug/L ) highest since 2012 was noted . This was contributed in the main to a cyanobacterial planktonic based algea in water column called Oscilittoria. This was a repeat of phenomenon noted in 2011, at that time the lower than usual light levels, put down to a dull summer, accounted for selection of this algal species which thrives in these conditions. Thankfully it seems it does not have any ill effects compared with other more potent algae scums previously experienced. At a glance

MEK

Muckross Rowing Club

U 12: Mastergeeha B 1 MEK 2. I MEK U12s got back to winning ways after a gritty performance away to Mastergeeha B. Mastergeeha started well and our defence knew they would have to be on top form to keep us in the game. Mastergeeha were enjoying the bulk of possession early on with MEK looking dangerous on the break. It was backs to the wall stuff at times but thanks to Darragh O`Neill, Roan Daly, Jack Aherne and Cian Myers we went in 0-0 at half time. It didn`t take long for us to take advantage of the gale force wind. Just two minutes into the second half Sean O`Brien drilled home from close range. MEK were now keeping possession of the ball better and our flying wingers Cian Fleming and Tadgh Gosney were bombing forward at every opportunity. Stuart Scott and Scott Carlton came on in attack after 40 mins for Eoghan Bolger and Sean Dennehy while Sam Lenihan came on for Cian Myers at left back. Fair play to Cian for playing as he was ill leading up to the match. We scored our second goal 15mins into the second half when Sean O`Brien crossed for Cian Fleming who hit a lovely shot into the back of the net. Mastergeeha pulled one back 5 minutes later which made for a nervous last 10 minutes. MEK held on though and were glad to hear the full-time whistle. Well done to both teams who performed so well in very difficult conditions. NEXT FIXTURES: U13 MEK V Athletic B - Sat 12:30. U11 MEK V Ballyhar - Sat 11:30
