A Killarney councillor will make direct contact with Garth Brook's Irish agent in an effort to get the Country Music superstar to play concerts in Fitzgerald Stadium in the future. | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan was inspired to invite Country Music’s biggest stars to Killarney after watching a Netflix documentary about Brooks. In an emotional scene in the film, Brooks speaks of his late mother Colleen Carroll. Mother and son are shown singing ‘That Is An Irish Lullaby’, a song which features Killarney. Brooks is due to return to play in Ireland in the next year or so, with Cork’s Páirc Uí Chaoimh mooted as one possible venue. His last planned appearance in Ireland, in 2014, was shrouded in controversy. He had sold out five nights at Croke Park but local residents fought successfully to reduce that to just three nights. As a result he cancelled all five dates as he did not want to let down the fans who had already paid for tickets. O’Callaghan, who watched the Netflix documentary ‘The Road I Am On” said he was blown away by Brooks singing about Killarney. This has inspired him to issue an unofficial invite to the Okla-
homa-born singer via his own personal Twitter account. O’Callaghan’s online request gathered so much positivity that he has decided to take the invite another step forward and will, this week, make direct contact with Peter Aitken Promotions, the Dublin-based music management firm that was behind Brooks aborted attempt to play Croke Park six years ago. “I know Peter well,” Botty told the Killarney Advertiser. “He used to holiday in Killarney, 30 years ago, and he stayed with my mother. I will be contacting Peter direct and telling him that Garth Brooks can play in Killarney for as many nights as he wants and there will no problems with the neighbours.” Fitzgerald Stadium has previously hosted major concerts with global stars like Elton John and Bryan Adams performing there in the past as part of the now discontinued Killarney SummerFest. The Killarney Advertiser was the first local media outlet to highlight ‘The Road I Am On.’ Three weeks ago the

Seasonal businesses face closure unless Government steps in | By Sean Moriarty Local seasonal tourism related businesses could face permanent closure unless they are included in the Government’s Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme. As hotels and guesthouses in Killarney get ready to reopen on Monday next the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) is calling on the Government to expand the current Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS) to include seasonal tourism employees. A discrepancy exists in the Government scheme where hotels and other related
business that had not reopened after the winter break prior to the COVID-19 shutdown will not be able to pay their staff wages through TWSS. Those that were operating prior to the shutdown will be able to avail of the scheme. There are other concerns too, like due to COVID-19 safety guidelines tourism and hospitality businesses including hotels, will be operating under significant operating constraints this summer. As a result, income is expected to be significantly down on previous years but tourism sector operators will be
faced with higher operating costs. Bernadette Randles, the Chair of the local branch of the IHF said that the issue was not exclusive to hotel operators and that any business that only operates in the peak tourism months of March to October could face financial ruin despite planning to reopening next week. The TWSS is just one way seasonal tourism business operators could offset some financial difficulties but, as it stands, they will not qualify for the scheme unlike their full-time colleagues. As a result there will be job losses and
“How many millions of fans were watching him sing about Killarney. It was like he was singing about Killarney all his life.” some businesses may not reopen at all this year and some are concerned that they could face closure further down the line if they do open this week. They, through representations being made by IHF, are calling on the Government to extend the scheme to seasonal businesses and not just restrict it to fulltime operators. There are over 17,000 people directly employed in the tourism sector in Kerry and it is estimated that one-third of these are seasonal employees. “It is just not fair,” Ms Randles told the Killarney Advertiser. “Every other business sector got looked after and if this is not actioned then you are looking at either closures, or some that won’t reopen at all this year and that will amount to high levels of unemployment which will cost the Government even more money. The Government has done absolutely nothing to help.”

"We'll be at the door to welcome you in" Mass returns next week but it'll be a different experience to what it was pre-lockdown with a smaller barely there congregation, hand sanitisers and face visors for the priests. | By Michelle Crean In Killarney, St Mary's Cathedral has the capacity for 1,400 parishioners. However, current Government guidelines are set to just 50 people indoors which includes the Priest, Sacristans, Eucharistic Ministers and ushers - but as the cathedral is so large, Parish Administrator Fr Kieran O'Brien says they can easily accommodate 200 people while staying within the two metre distance rule. "We know people are longing to come back," Fr Kieran told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "We'll be at the door to welcome you in. There is capacity for 200 with social distancing taken into account that we've calculated." The plans and preparations are well un-
derway but it'll be a gradual process, he added. Before entering parishioners are asked to hand sanitise and respect social distancing as ushers guide them to their seats. During Mass Fr Kieran will sanitise his hands and wear a facial visor before giving out communion and is respectfully asking people to take the communion in their hand. After each Mass the church will be sanitised and cleaned by a team of volunteers. Also this weekend, the cathedral will be 'fogged' clean which will last for three days, ahead of its official reopening for Masses. Although in recent weeks people have been allowed in for personal prayer from

11am to 5.45pm, he said that it's been a difficult few months saying Mass in an empty church alone. "It has been difficult certainly - this pandemic has affected everyone. But people were tuning in on the Internet and
their radios and people sent us messages of appreciation." And he added, that in future baptisms will more than likely be one service for four separate families with a maximum of 15 family members each.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Killarney Municipal District takes place today (Friday) in Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, at 1.30pm. In a break from tradition, the meeting will not take place at the Town Hall on Kenmare Place as the boardroom there is too small to allow for social distancing. Michael Gleeson will, today, end his 12 month term as the town’s mayor and looks certain to be replaced by fellow Independent councillor Brendan Cronin. Gleeson will continue as an elected councillor but Cronin, subject to ratification, will act as the local council’s figurehead for the next 12 months as part of a deal that was hammered out after last year’s local elections. The Spa man presided over many important developments in the town over the last 12 months including the opening of the redeveloped ANAM Cultural Centre, but his term as mayor was greatly interrupted as a result of
pandemic-related restrictions. “My year as mayor was dominated by matters largely outside of our direct control; a great storm put paid to the official lighting of the cathedral tree at Christmas. The real story of 2020 thus far is the terrible pandemic. That virus put paid to the Saint Patrick's Day parades in Rathmore and Killarney and ensured that so many other projects and gatherings could not take place. Even the laudable plan to light up the town had to be abandoned due to torrential rain. I congratulate all who played such a wonderful role in limiting the Coronavirius effects, the local population; the Council staff, indoors and outdoors; the Gardaí and our health services. I congratulate all who gave so generously of time and effort. Buíochas ó chroí le gach éinne,” Mr Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am glad to have had the privilege of being Mayor of the Municipal District but I hope that never again will that symbol of our special place have such an quiet year. My heartfelt best wishes to my successor(s) as number one citizens of Killarney Municipal District.”

The renowned Radio Kerry DJ, one of the most influential Country Music DJs in the country, will next month celebrate 30 years as the presenter of 'Sounds Country'. Prior to this he was a member of several local Country Music bands including 'The Kerry Cowboys'. In a lifetime dedicated to Country Music, Dermot has put many an artist on the road to stardom through airtime on his popular music show and organising Country Music festivals all over Kerry and beyond. Now with his special anniversary on the horizon, some of those now fa-
mous artists wanted to repay the local legend and have recorded a song called ‘Kerry’s Country King’. The song was written by Billy Morrissey, one of Ireland’s best-known country musicians, song writers and music festival organisers. County Longford-born Declan Nerney was one of the many artists that Dermot helped get established. This week he finished recording ‘Kerry’s Country King’ and it will go an general release in the next week or so. “I am really excited about it,” Dermot told the Killarney Advertiser. “I have helped so many over the years, some forget about you as they move up the ladder but two of the biggest names in Irish Country Music have come together on this. When Billy first rang me and told me he was writing a song I was having second thoughts, but now everybody needs to get practicing as we are going singing a song.”
Delay to dredging works at Ross Castle canal | By Sean Moriarty Dredging works at Ross Castle have been delayed because the National Parks and Wildlife Service have yet to determine where it can legally dispose of removed silt. Last month the Killarney Advertiser revealed that the NPWS would start dredging at the canal area near the mooring point at Ross Castle. The build-up of the
silt was causing problems for the hundreds of boat operators who use the facility as they were finding it impossible to access the lake network due to the height of the lake bed. At the time Michael Healy-Rae TD intervened and he was assured that the work would be done. However, nearly one month on, boat owners have contacted the Killarney Advertiser complaining that they cannot
access the lakes as the silt is so high boats are getting stuck in the canal. Each boat operator pays an annual fee of €53 to access the lakes. “I have seen several boat men just turn around and come back to shore – they can't just pick up their boats and lift them into the lakes,” boatman Tom Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. It is understood that the NPWS is willing to do the work but is waiting on the re-
sults of an environmental impact study before doing so. “It is actually a very simple job, but the question remains, where do they dump the material once it is dug out? It can’t be just dumped anywhere and we have plenty of suitable and licenced sites in Kerry. It is now just a case of getting the paperwork sorted. I am working very hard on this,” Deputy Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser.

Man before court on sexual assault charge A judge has told a 47-year-old Kerry man he is not to communicate or “interact directly or indirectly” with any persons who advertise or provide sexual services.
Killarney town and park to merge in new county plan Kerry County Council has commenced work on the drafting of the new County Development Plan for Kerry to cover the sixyear period from 2022 to 2028 - including potential plans for Killarney and its environs. | By Sean Moriarty The plan will set out how the county is promoted and regulated over the sixyear period and is now open for public consultation and observation. One of the biggest ideas being mooted for the Killarney urban area is to seamlessly integrate the National Park with the town centre which could be achieved by increasing pedestrian zones and reducing the amount of through-traffic in the town and the transition from car predominance to pedestrian priority. There is also a proposition to create a dedicated cultural and art/craft quarter in the town. “The vision for Killarney seeks to mirror the world class natural environment that is Killarney National Park with an exceptional urban experience that sets Killarney apart as a world class tourism destination and seeks to interweave the fabric of the Urban Core of Killarney seamlessly into the National Park through a series of measures that removes as far as possible transitory traffic from the urban core,” reads a Kerry County Council official document relating to the development plan that was seen by the Killarney Advertiser.
The plan hopes to develop Killarney into a world class tourist destination. Urban renewal is another key factor in the plan and vacant town centre buildings (both residential and commercial) is another issue the plan is keen to address. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae is calling on Kerry people across all walks of life throughout the county to engage with the public consultation phase of the new County Development Plan. “The County Development Plan is vital to the future success of the county and can only be enhanced when individuals and community groups make themselves heard. It is safe to say this is a real chance for every part of Kerry to place their community into the big picture,” he said. Healy-Rae has encouraged people to engage either with their local public representatives or with the Council directly online, via email or by post. “If you have an idea or a plan to improve your community, if you want to make a positive contribution to the county or if you are just an individual who feels that something can be done better, make sure your voice is heard. We are all in this together,” added the Kerry TD.
The man was before the District court in Tralee on Thursday, charged with the sexual assault and with common assault of a woman in an apartment location in Killarney town centre. The woman was not named in court. The alleged offences occurred on a date in May less than a week after the pandemic limit on exercise was extended from 2km to 5kms. Detective Garda David Kenny gave evidence of arresting the man on the night of June 21 in a Kerry garda station. The accused man was arrested at 11pm, and later charged with two offences at a premises on May 11 last. After caution the man replied “I don’t know what to say. It never happened”. To the second charge the man said: “It never happened. I never assaulted anyone”, Det Garda Kenny said. There were no objections to bail and
Sergeant Miriam Mulhall Nolan said they were awaiting directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the DPP. The sergeant sought the accused be remanded on conditions to a Killarney District court in July, sitting in Tralee. Solicitor Padraig O’Connell sought that his client’s attendance not be required on the date and this was granted. Mr O’Connell assured the court his client would have no contact with sexual agencies in the meantime and would fully comply with this bail condition agreed with gardai. Judge David Waters, agreeing to bail, ordered there must be no contact direct or indirect with any potential witness. The judge also ordered: “He is not to communicate or interact directly or indirectly with any persons who advertise or provide sexual services”. Judge Waters remanded the 47-year-old on bail on his own bond. There was an application for legal aid and no objection and the legal aid was granted. Nothing was to be published that would tend to identify victims, Judge Waters said.
New initiative launched to encourage Kerry staycations Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) together with Kerry County Council (KCC) are inviting the people of Kerry to ‘staycate’ in the Kingdom and give their home county’s tourism industry a vital shot in the arm. To add to the appeal of a Kerry staycation, the 56,000 households throughout the kingdom will receive €100 worth of discount vouchers which are redeemable in registered accommodation outlets right across the county. Valid until April 30, 2021, hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses, self-catering homes and caravan and camping sites all over the county have signed up to accept the vouchers which give a discount of up to 10 percent off the cost of accommodation. “Now is the time to share our love for our county with our children, family and friends - to revisit a childhood haunt, to rediscover a favourite memory or to explore a corner of the county that you have never seen,” Kerry Tourism Industry Federation Chairperson, Pat O’Leary said. “The tourism industry is a vital cog in our local economy and staycations are an effective and sustainable way to support it during these challenging times.” The Mayor of Kerry, Cllr. Niall Kelleher, warmly welcomed the new initiative.
VOUCHERS: Households in Kerry are to receive €100 worth of holiday vouchers towards a staycation, according to Kerry Tourism Industry Federation Chairperson, Pat O’Leary (pictured).
“These vouchers provide the people of Kerry with a very simple and effective way in which to support local employers and local jobs, thereby contributing to the rebooting of the Kerry economy. I urge everyone in Kerry to give it their support.” The Kerry Staycation Vouchers are being distributed this week by An Post. Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Planned meetings for Muckross House redundancies cancelled The Department of Heritage and Culture confirmed on Monday there will be no redundancies and no closure of Muckross House - planned meetings on redundancies etc., were cancelled on Tuesday, I am told. The planned shutdown was on the advice of the Trustees, staff were told. Though, was this a full cabinet vote by the 18 Trustees or not, we don’t know. The farms are what you might call the back door of Muckross House. It came as a shock then to learn it was to be shut down for cost cutting and COVID reasons from September 1, and operate in a limited kind of way until then. But what surprised me hugely was when I learnt how no Department – even the one that owns the National Park – was approached for help. We have some of the most vocal and most distinguished - and let’s face it - "connected" citizens of our town on the board of Trustees. Were they too proud to ask? Tourism minister Brendan Griffin checked with his officials and no-one had contacted his department for help. He was in a state of shock at the news. The same was true of the Department of Arts and Culture – they issued a sharp statement….. ‘The Traditional Farms is a commercial venture run by the Trustees of Muckross House not this Department. With regard to the closure of the farm at the end of August this was a commercial decision taken by the Trustees’.
What surprised me was how no Department – even the one that owns the National Park – was approached for help Our local Mayor Michael Gleeson was in the “invidious position” of being both a Trustee and mayor so he could not say much, he told me. A fellow trustee, Senator Paul Coghlan, did not want to be publicly involved either. Danny Healy-Rae TD is not on the board – but he too was in shock at the news. The farms with their baking and pre-electric quiet were near to his heart. It brought back memories of his grandmother and her bread, a clearly upset Danny Healy-Rae told me. A museum did not have to make a profit he pointed out. The Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher, didn’t put a tooth in it – “the whole thing came out of the blue”, so there was great upset. It was an important heritage project celebrating the other side of life; a lot of State funding had already gone into it and there had to
be intervention by the Council, Mayor Kelleher indicated. And there is another person in the background – Jimmy Deenihan – he has always had Killarney in his heart, and still has clout with his old department it seems. Now, we can all accept how the Board of Trustees have done this town great service. But the thing is, did none of these distinguished people think of the body blow this landed at such a vulnerable time? Did no-one think of that blow to morale to the staff, the tourism industry and to the local people scrambling to get back to some kind of normality? Now, there is one other thing; the world has changed hugely for the voluntary sector and as well as having less time, there is much more responsibility attached to roles like directors and Trustees. I would say there is almost too much responsibility. There is personal liability, financial liability, and this is no small consideration. One wonders if a heritage business that turns over seven million euro annually, should not be semi-state? Being invited onto Trustees has long been seen a mark of having arrived in Killarney society. I don’t know any other body in Killarney held in such respect and awe, but this week has brought shock as well as awe. There may have to be a bit of a rethink …otherwise the renowned Trustees are in danger of being seen as more landlordish than the landlords themselves.

I strongly believe we need an election I don’t know honestly what to make of the posturing going on in the Government formation. Unlike most, perhaps, I strongly believe we need an election. Matters have changed since early February. We have been too long without an elected Government - so long, it almost begs the question, do we need one at all? This is the wrong time for a Green led Government. We need strong economic policies and while everyone for a while laughed at Sinn Féin’s crazy economics, no-one seems to want to examine the Green think. There is a rump in the new Greens that is far more people before profit and radical socialist than anything we have in Sinn Féin. Yet Fianna Fáil won’t talk to Sinn Fein! It's a joke. The rubbish being spouted about the Shannon LNG project is just one example of Green think. It is hyper-reality lead by Hollywood’s 'Hulk' Mark Ruffalo. There is nothing in the planning that what is taken in near Tarbert this has to be fracked gas or that it will even be allowed to be fracked gas. We have had the ridiculous scenario of protests already at Kerry Airport and the Green protestors all arriving in petrol and diesel vehicles. Just wait until the lights go out!
Studies confirm women are worse affected by pandemic The front line role of women more carers, more retail workers and more medics are women has been obvious in this pandemic. Now a raft of studies confirm that women are worse affected and are more likely to experience long term effects economically, if not physically. There are numerous reports in the UK of how the shutdown has forced women into a kind of surreal 1950s bubble, tied to the house and kitchen once more.
An important Eurofund survey details: “While women appear to be more resilient than men to COVID-19 in terms of health outcomes, that is not the case when it comes to the economic and social fallout. Measures taken by governments to control the spread of the virus are exacerbating gender divides in unemployment, domestic labour and financial security, all to the disadvantage of women. Meanwhile, work–life conflict is escalating as people work from home, with mothers of small children often bearing the brunt
of the impact.” It really should not come as a surprise. Financially self-employed women have traditionally been targets for unfair tax and welfare treatments, with maternity benefits only recently available to the self-employed woman. Financially, women have opted for part-time work, freelance and seasonal work and these sectors are worst hit. A lot of women over 66 have their own businesses, partly of course because they have no pensions worth talking about and are penalised if they worked
at a young age, thanks to Joan Burton. Yet the State deemed this group – men and women – ineligible for COVID-19 payments because of their age, so we have ageism and sexism combined. After most wars women were forced back into the kitchen, housekeeping and looking after children, elderly and the wounded, and had to give up their financial independence. This was true of World War 1; it was again true of World War 2, and it seems the third world war – this time against a virus – is having the same gender imbalance.

Killarney promoted as a special place with plenty of space
Killarney is embarking on an exciting space odyssey to maintain its position as the country’s premier tourist destination. Through the use of stunning drone footage, creative stills, innovative design and the spoken word, 'The SPACE to…' campaign, devised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce in association with Kerry County Council, highlights the brilliant range of outdoor activities, scenery, experiences, dining options, places to stay and shops to visit with a traditional Killarney welcome awaiting all. It’s a loud and clear shout-out to remind everybody that Ireland’s favourite holiday destination is again open for business in the new normal that is post COVID-19. “One of Killarney’s most precious and valuable assets is space and we can deliver on the great outdoors in a manner that simply cannot be rivalled,” Chamber President, Paul Sherry, said. “The campaign is focused on staycations for the summer of 2020 and vis-
itors who will be enjoying day trips in the coming weeks." The new initiative expresses the true value of Killarney as a place to explore, a place to chill, a place live, a place to roam, a place to pause and a place to breathe but, most of all, as a place to visit and a place to enjoy. The innovative campaign is very much in keeping with Kerry County Council's Safe Destination programme which has seen numerous local business owners and staff enrolling for a special training programme that equips them with all the skills and knowledge required to ensure visitors safely observe social distancing regulations and etiquette. The new campaign coincides with the launch of an interactive new version of the Killarney.ie website, where visitors can get full details on everything they need to know about their upcoming trip to Killarney.
SINGLE RELEASE: Local musician Shane Kennedy (PISKIN) is today (Friday) releasing his first ever single. Photo: Michelle Crean
Shane plans first single release today (Friday) | By Michelle Crean Some will know him from his regular gigs in the Tatler and the Fáilte and now he'll be known even more as local musician Shane Kennedy is today (Friday) releasing his first ever single. Also known as PISHKIN, the young and talented musician and singer, will release 'Road To Your Heart' on Spotify, iTunes and all streaming platforms worldwide, followed by a radio campaign within the next two weeks. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Shane said he is both excited and a little nervous about the single's release but that it is something that the 21-yearold has wanted to do for a long while now.
"I have been gigging around Killarney for some time now and just thought that it's the next step," he said. "I was sent the song by William Scally, a music publisher in Killorglin, he asked if I'd cover it." Influenced by Bob Dylan, Ed Sheerin, Artic Monkeys and The Strokes, the CIT Digital Media student has hopes of making it big in the music industry since he got his first guitar aged eight. "From a young age I have always loved music although I don't come from a musical family. It just seemed inevitable that I would sing and play music. I love it, I couldn't do without it." Shane, from Farranfore, recorded the entire single at home on his laptop and has also released a short promo of the country rock song available on YouTube and Vimeo: 'Road To Your Heart'.

BUSINESSES REOPEN Reduced class sizes and outdoor gym at Activate Fitness | By Michelle Crean One local fitness business located in Ballycasheen has added an outdoor gym and reduced class sizes as a safety measure as they reopen this coming Monday. Brian Foley, who runs Activate Fitness, says that although the current restrictions are for a two metre distance in such settings, he's planning to have smaller class sizes which will give instructors and members a greater distance of three and a half metres to exercise comfortably. Coaches at the popular fitness centre have new measures in place including white square boxes inside on the matted flooring where a member can comfortably exercise with equipment within the four square metre box. They have also implemented strict temperature checks and hand sanitisation for everyone entering inside and every member gets a cleaning basket to wipe down their equipment after
use. Staff will then allow 20 minutes between classes so that they can give the machines a further thorough cleaning before swapping over. Brian Foley, who runs the gym, says there has been no official guidelines for gyms to work from. "There's no real hard and fast rules from Ireland Active the representative body for gyms in Ireland, they've gone with two metre guidelines," Brian told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "Personally I don't feel it's enough unless you have a lot of ventilation. "We've the luxury of having the space so we're going for three and a half metres." Adding impact absorption mats outdoors will also accommodate a further 10 people each within their own four square metre space, he added. "We're not like a typical gym, we can roll out all the equipment and of course it's weather dependent. We can't wait to get back to it."

Kayne’s embraces new technology upon reopening One of Killarney’s most popular eating venues is getting ready to welcome customers back once again when their doors reopen this Monday June 29. Kayne’s Bar & Brasserie, which is widely known as a vibrant and spacious venue, is now preparing for, and dedicated to developing, new ways in which they will all be socialising and reconnecting with family and friends this summer. To the forefront is safety, the family run business is fully prepared to keep customers safe with some smart social distancing options and the adjustment of restaurant layouts, enhanced sanitisation, ample hand cleaning points and contactless payment options. Technology will play a major role with the introduction of the online booking App 'anyExcuse' for customers and a state-of-the-art handheld ordering system insuring a prompt and relaxed table service, along with a safer socialising and working environment. A delicious new menu has also been designed keeping seasonality and locality in mind. “We are very proud to feature as many local producers as possible on our new
Kayne’s menus and using these delicious locally sourced fresh ingredients to create some unique and flavoursome dishes alongside some traditional favourites,” Executive Chef, Cyril Durand, said. All the above measures are being implemented to ensure the best customer experience is delivered. "Visitors can be reassured that Kayne’s is taking the appropriate measures to ensure our business complies with the requirements of the new world we find ourselves in and in order for us open safely next Monday," Bernadette Randles said. "We can’t wait to welcome customers back and give them the fun and relaxed experience they have always enjoyed at Kayne’s." With their outdoor terrace also set to open, Bernadette hopes that the glorious lockdown weather we have enjoyed so far continues long into the summer! BUSINESSES REOPEN
| By Michelle Crean Bebe Creche & Montessori School on Countess Rd has had the builders in to make alterations and has put a number of new safety measures in place as they get ready to welcome back some of the little ones next week. Manager Sonia Sacristan this week told the Killarney Advertiser that although the numbers of children allowed to attend the day care service from Monday next has been greatly reduced to avoid any potential spread of infection, both she and the staff are really looking forward to seeing the children again. New to the centre will be a drop off point for the parents who will be greeted by staff on the balcony. There's also a separate entry and exit, playpods have been added for three different ages, lots of informative posters and floor stickers have been added and hand sanitisation will be widely available. Any child that may present with COVID-19 like symptoms will have their temperature taken and be moved to an isolation room with a staff mem-
ber and a parent will be immediately contacted. "The numbers have been reduced due to COVID," Sonia explained. "We have three playpods; one for the Wobblers from eight months to twoyear-olds, a second pod for two-anda-half-year-olds to three-and-a-halfyear-olds and another for age four onwards. The Wobblers will have three staff members and the others will have two in each pod." Physical contact will be allowed for the little ones while they've planned fun games for the older children such as high fives and elbow bumping. "We are devastated that we cannot hug them, anyone who knows me knows I love to hug. For the Wobblers it's different we can hold them but we have to be conscious of it at all times. In the playschool we have a unique system by greeting the children with high fives and elbow to elbow and throwing kisses just for them to understand and to show them we are there for them. I'm really looking forward to seeing them. I have missed them so much. The creche is nothing without them, it's just an empty building."
WELCOME BACK: Staff from Bebe's Creche & Montessori School on Countess Road are ready to welcome back some of the children this coming Monday.

TWO BECOMES ONE: Proprietors husband and wife Sandoro and Paola Taddiei with manager Rita Jasiuniene as they prepare to reopen their two restaurants next week. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy
Two popular restaurants to come together as one | By Sean Moriarty
Two well-known restaurants on High St are set to amalgamate as part of their post-lockdown re-emergence plan. Robertinos and Salvadors have operated side-by-side, but as separate entities, by husband and wife team Sandoro and Paola Taddiei on the town’s main drag for years. The upmarket and late night dining themed Robertinos opened in 1993 and this was followed by Salvadors which catered more for the day time trade and was considered to be a more family orientated restaurant. The Taddiei's are preparing to reopen their eateries on July 1 - but will combine the two popular restaurants into one - which will be re-branded as Robertinos and Salvadors under the catchphrase ‘Together We Are Stronger’. “It is something we had in mind for a few years,” Sandro told the Killarney
Advertiser. "But, you could say that COVID made us do it." The new set up will allow for a greater chance to comply with new regulations governing the restaurant industry – for example customers can now enter the premises via Salvadors’ front door and leave through Robertinos’ door after a new walkway was constructed to internally link the two former separate restaurants. “We can now offer the best of both worlds,” manager Rita Jasiuniene added. “The two very different environments are available under the one roof.” Other improvements include the installation of Perspex screen guards on each of the dining booths. While opening day is not until July 1, two days after the official restrictions are due to be lifted, bookings are already very strong. “We wanted to wait until the start of the new month, new date, new restaurant, new start,” Sandro added.
Social media warriors warned not to find fault with businesses | By Sean Moriarty Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan is calling on members of the public to exercise patience when the restaurant and other eating establishments reopen to the public on Monday. Restaurant owners across the town
will face a "new normal" as the try to get their businesses back up and running after weeks of Coronavirus-induced lockdown. The Independent councillor, whose family operate The Fáilte Hotel on College St, is concerned that the socalled ‘keyboard warriors' will be quick to find fault with premises as they
strive to get back to some degree of normal trading and that members of the public could potentially post negative comments and photos on social media. He says people need to be patient and should not to be finding fault with any business during the early days of post-lockdown trading.
“It is all about creating positivity for Killarney – we need to be positive,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “People will be trying to find fault, posting things on social media, and that is not right.” O’Callaghan will delay the reopening of The Fáilte until Thursday next week “to allow things settle down”.

BUSINESSES REOPEN Local hairdresser ready to cut again! | By Michelle Crean Delighted customers will be glad to hear that hairdresser Norma Doyle is back in business this coming Monday - but there will be changes for customers.
Jarveys back - but fear no customers | By Michelle Crean Jarveys, who are already under financial pressure after lost months of tourism - are fearful that there’ll be no customers needing their services when they return next week. Currently there are over 30 licensed jarveys operating in and around the Haha where they would normally pick up customers from arriving tour buses or families out on day trips. However, as they got the go ahead to get back to business from next Monday, many won’t be returning just yet with some fearing there’ll be no work, while others fall into the high risk category due to age and health reasons. Up to 14 jarveys this week met with Kerry County Council, and on Wednesday also received a letter from the National Park and Wildlife Service (NPWS) about new safety measures including installing a Perspex screen dividing driver from the passengers. Local jarvey Mike Grady says while many will be back from Monday on, he’ll wait another while due to health as he’s an asthmatic. However, he is gravely concerned that there’ll be little to no work for those returning. He said jarveys have called on the Government for support but have heard nothing back. Already this year jarveys has had no relief or freeze from paying costs with most still
to pay winter bills for fodder and rent on land for their animals. Bus tours were 80 to 90 percent of their client base but now with the huge loss in tourism - they’re wondering if there’ll be any work for any of them. With most on the COVID-19 payment of €350, it might not be worth their while going back at all, Mike Grady explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “We don't know if there's anything to go back to,” Mike said. “We all have bills to pay including the winter bills, vets bills, fodder. We paid the insurance in September or October and we have got no relief or freeze on that either." Measures they’ll have to take after a passenger has been for a trip on the carriage includes disinfecting seating and flooring after each trip and rugs will not be allowed due to the risk of spreading something from one person to the other another additional cost for them. “The floor - everything you touch has to be cleaned every time after a passenger. We have to take names, phone numbers and addresses so that everyone is traceable. The protocol to follow is very hard for us." And although insurance has doubled in recent years for them, he says they haven't put up their prices in 16 or 17 years. "Bus tours are our main bread and butter but they're now gone. If there's another relapse, next year will be gone for us also. We don't know if we're coming or going."
Clients will no longer be able to just pop by for a chat or stop in to book an appointment at Norma's Flair for Hair in Hogan's Lane - and those booked in are asked to come at exactly the specified time to avoid delaying other customers. There'll be hand sanitisers, Perspex screens between seats and unfortunately there'll be no tea, coffee or magazines offered. Coats will be taken and placed in a plastic bag out the back, and Norma is requesting clients come 'as light as possible" including no handbags. Phones and tablets can be brought in however, she explained. "There's big changes," Norma said this
week to the Killarney Advertiser. "Everyone has to wear a mask and we'll have face shields on. Everything used will be brought home and put on a 60 degree wash. Every time someone leaves the seats will have to disinfected." Norma, who has two seats for doing hair herself rents a chair to Eileen Carolan and a beauty section with Sandra Flynn. On March 14 she closed due to the lockdown but said she missed having chats with her customers. "I found it hard at the start. During lockdown people would ring and touch base, it was lovely." The announcement of the reopening date was a huge relief but she said Taoiseach Leo Varadkar didn't give hairdressers or barbers much notice as it was three weeks ahead of schedule. And the last few days have been very busy rearranging appointments. "I was prepared as I'm organised, but many weren't. It was three weeks earlier than what was expected."
Driving test backlog in Killarney Over 700 Killarney-based applicants for a driving test will have to wait until late July at the earliest as Road Safety Authority (RSA) officials say they cannot comply with social distancing requirements between inspectors and candidates. RSA figures show that there are 765 candidates waiting for a test in the Killarney area. From Monday, tests for trucks, buses and motorcycles will resume gradually, but the RSA has yet to set a date for the resumption of car tests as both the ex-
aminer and candidate would be in close proximity for the duration of the test. 'It is envisaged that, in line with Phase Three of the Government roadmap, motorcycle testing will be the first of our services to resume followed closely by truck and bus tests and finally a phased resumption to car testing', an RSA statement said. 'We are targeting resuming car tests at the earliest opportunity'. All candidates and examiners must wear face masks during the tests and driving instructors will no longer be allowed to use the waiting room or bathroom facilities at test centres around the country.

4,000 participate in Kerry COVID safety training The number of staff across the retail and hospitality sectors in Kerry taking part in specialised training on cleanliness, hygiene and customer interaction in the COVID-19 environment has now reached over 4,000 as Kerry continues to prepare for the return of visitors to the county. The ‘Safe Destination Kerry’ programme, in association with Kerry County Council, Kerry Education and Training Board, the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, and the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation has generated huge interest among Kerry businesses who will be provided with the new ‘Safe Destination’ Badge when their staff have completed training. The aim of the training, which is being provided by the Kerry Education and Training Board, is to ensure that Kerry tourism and retail staff are trained in infection prevention, hygiene and cleanliness to the highest international standards as they reopen for business. Coupled with that ‘Safe Destination’ promotion will be an information campaign for visitors to the county to ensure that they are aware of and take their personal responsibilities seriously in relation to social distancing, cough etiquette and
hand-washing guidelines. "There has been enormous interest in the training being provided by the tutors in Kerry ETB as businesses prepare to open their doors to visitors again," Tourism Officer with Kerry County Council, John Griffin, said. "This is about reassuring people who visit a hotel, a restaurant, a shop or any other premises that they can do so in the knowledge that staff have been trained to a high standard on how to deal with customers in the new environment. We want people to feel comfortable and safe when they visit the county as the local economy continues to be reopened and while certain restrictions remain in the interests of public safety." Businesses and staff interested in participating in the training can register with Kerry County Council on its freephone Business Support Line on 1800 807 102 or business.support@kerrycoco.ie.
Kitty O'Se's ready to give customers a warm welcome Kitty O’Sé’s in College St is preparing to reopen its doors this Monday June 29 under HSE and Government guidelines. However, it is with heartfelt sadness that the man behind its success with his partner Eileen, Seamus O'Connor, will not be beside her following his untimely passing in April. "I never in a million years thought that when we closed Kitty’s doors on St Patrick’s Day evening that Séamus would not be here at my side to reopen the doors once again," Eileen Finucane explained this week. "This has been a challenging time for Ireland, we have all been effected by COVID-19." Eileen and Seamus opened Kitty's in Killarney last year after successfully setting up and running Kitty O’Sé’s Bar and Restaurant in Kinsale. "We moved to Kinsale in 2013 and opened Kitty O’Sé’s Bar and Restaurant on March 15 after carrying out refurbishment works. We saw an opening for good food and traditional Irish music for both locals and visitors to the Cork town and of course with Séamus' voice and charm Kitty O’Sé’s was an instant success as we took a bit of Kerry to Cork!" she said. "Last year we saw an opportunity to open Kitty O’Sé’s Seafood and Grill Restaurant on College Street. We did a total refurb and Séamus worked hard every day, with the great contractors, to open the doors on August 26. Instantly we had a great response from both locals and visitors to Killarney." Now, both Eileen and her staff are ready to reopen the doors again following the country's lockdown over the last three months. They have reduced their table layout to one meter distance offering safe dis-
tance dining between other guests. All staff have been up-skilled and trained in Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) and the highest hygiene standards to deliver scientifically validated standard of cleanliness and sanitation, she explained. "Kitty O’Sé’s has obtained the 'Hygiene Assured' Certification from The Food Safety Company in Cork." Kitty’s opens at 12 midday serving lunch light snacks through to dinner. Dining in Kitty’s is all about the experience from the moment you walk in the door and guest satisfaction is most important. A warm Irish welcome awaits all in the relaxed elegant interior. "We work very close with our suppliers to select the finest quality produce, locally sourced where possible, and have a relationship that we can guarantee to serve our customers the best from sea to land. We want our customers to enjoy our dining experience whether you pop in for a light snack, lunch or dinner, or to celebrate a special occasion." Diners can enjoy fresh oysters, prawns, mussels, the famous 'Seafood Tower', their fabulous 30 day aged steaks, and of course their signature dish; an 8oz fillet steak cooked on a stone - a hot favourite and a carefully chosen wine list and selection of beers. There are also vegetarian and vegan options. "Bookings are now being taken and we look forward to welcoming you all back to Kitty’s. May I take this opportunity to thank you all for the fantastic support and loyalty from the staff at Kitty’s, friends, family and so many of you given to me at such a difficult time. “Séamus may be gone but he will never be forgotten. I have cherished memories that will never fade away. Seamus will be in my heart forever, what we keep in memories is ours unchanged forever.”

Win a racehorse and help injured jockeys Internet competitions for high-end products have been all the rage for the last year, and even more so during the lockdown, but two Killarney men have come up with a different take on the popular schemes. | By Sean Moriarty Instead of winning a high-performance car or a camper van, the usual fare on offer in such competitions, subscribers to this one can win a 50 percent share in a racehorse. As an added bonus, a portion of the raffle’s takings will be given to charities that supports injured jockeys in Ireland and Britain. Horse Racing Buddy Club was founded by Killarney-based horse racing fans Gavin Nolan and Kieran Looney. The club was originally set up to allow several horse racing fans come together to own a race horse – syndicates are limited to 20 persons but clubs can have unlimited membership – and can arrange visits to famous training stables. The club’s plans for the year were disrupted as a result of pandemic related restrictions but they also wanted to do something to help injured jockeys. They have organised an online competition via their website www.horseracing-
buddyclub.ie. Punters can enter the competition for €50. The prize is 50 percent ownership in a racehorse called 'True Dreamer', and a large portion of each entry goes towards either the Injured Jockey Fund in the UK or the Irish Jockey Fund. “We must be the unluckiest horse racing club ever – we just got off the ground when the shutdown came into force,” Glenflesk man Kieran Looney told the Killarney Advertiser. “But we knew we needed to do something to help the jockey funds that were also suffering as their main event did not happen either. We came up with this idea and so far nearly 60 tickets have been sold.” They hope to run 'True Dreamer' at Mallow on July 5 but, as demand for entries to all events are now at a premium, their entry is subject to a ballot. “That is the plan, but if the ballot goes against us we will get a higher place for the next ballot so we placed the entry anyway,” added Looney.

Tributes to Detective Horkan at Killarney Garda Station | By Sean Moriarty Superintendent Flor Murphy has praised the people of Killarney for the support Gardai received following the tragic death of Detective Garda Colm Horkan who was killed last week in the line of duty. Detective Horkan was shot and fatally wounded during an incident in Castlerea, County Roscommon. On Sunday, local gardai and dignitaries attended a special memorial service for the late detective at Killarney Garda Station. A minute’s silence was observed and local musician Paul Sheerin played the Last Post during a ceremony that was led by Superintendent Murphy and attended by Seargent Dermot O'Connell, Mayor
of Killarney Michael Gleeson and Bishop Ray Browne as well as several members of the force and local retired gardai and members of the Fire and Ambulance services. “The people of Killarney have been very supportive, we received many messages of goodwill and many, many more signed the book of condolences,” Superintendent Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is very sad and very tragic and something you don’t expect in rural Ireland, especially in the middle all the health restrictions. It just shows the dangers and challenges we face every day.” Two members of the force, currently stationed in Killarney Garda Station, attended the Garda Training College in Templemore alongside the late Mr Horkan.

Summer Provision Programme “failing the most vulnerable” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae has this week raised concerns about "the most vulnerable people in society" saying a proposed Summer Provision Programme lacks clear guidelines. The new Summer Provision Programme is currently being rolled out by the Department of Education for children with special needs who will be entitled to up to 20 hours additional tuition. The Department has confirmed that 8,000 children have been registered to take part. However, the plan has come under fire from teachers unions, parents and disability groups for its lack of clear guidelines, which has led to many schools not participating, which will directly affect many of the students, while SNAs have questioned their rates of pay in comparison with teachers. “The Department of Education have tripped themselves up on their shoe lac-
es by not providing clear guidelines to the stakeholders and as a result we are yet again letting the most vulnerable people in our society behind, particularly when it comes to their education,” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said. Three programmes staffed by teachers and SNAs are due to run this summer to support school students with moderate or profound intellectual disabilities and with conditions such as autism, but many questions have been left unanswered and need clear answers, according to the Kerry TD. “Many SNAs have only found out that they will be paid less than half that of teachers and they have received no information on what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is needed as they attend the houses of their students. This needs to be answered as it has frightened both parents of special needs children and SNAs who may have a COVID-19 vulnerable people in their household.”

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS: Ryan Andrews and Michaela O’Neill pictured at the launch of the CMRF Crumlin abseil challenge.
CMRF Crumlin launch abseil challenge ‘Dancing with the Stars’ participant and actor Ryan Andrews and partner, primary school teacher Michaela O’Neill have launched this year’s CMRF Crumlin Abseil Challenge. Ryan and Michaela will be going to new heights on September 18 when they abseil off the roof of Croke Park in Dublin by dropping one hundred feet off the

Hogan Stand. “We're delighted to be taking part in the Abseil for CMRF Crumlin challenge,” Ryan, who revealed during his stint on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ that he was living with a serious health condition that is sometimes misunderstood, said. “With scoliosis I never really took any notice of it. But then it was only as I got older and got on 'Dancing with
the Stars' that it made me realise with all the struggles and pain I was going through – the embarrassment and self-consciousness that I was going through, to be open about it.” National Scoliosis Awareness Month takes place every June to highlight the growing need for education, early detection and public awareness about scoliosis and its prevalence within Ireland. Scoliosis is surprisingly common and affects four in every thousand people. It is more common in girls than boys, and can develop at any time during childhood and adolescence. “There's lots of different initiatives throughout the year but National Scoliosis Awareness Month is important, and I've opened up a bit more about it,” Ryan said. Bernice Condon, Challenge Fundraising Executive with CMRF Crumlin said they are delighted to have Ryan and Michaela for this year’s abseil. "Having experienced CHI at Crumlin first hand, he knows what the children at CHI at Crumlin go through. The abseil is a great way to get involved in fundraising while challenging your fears. We’re calling on our supporters in Kerry to sign up to raise vital funds for our little patients.” CMRF Crumlin hopes to raise €30,000 this year with spaces limited to 80 people. There is a €70 registration fee and the minimum people must raise is an additional €350. Participants will climb down behind the large screen on the Hogan Stand before dropping down in a one hundred foot abseil to the pitch side. Social distancing and all health and safety measures will be adhered to during the abseil. For those interested, please email Bernice at abseil@cmrf.org.
Baby Emily thinks her real name is Alexa! An 11-month-old little girl may need to have a name change as she is only responding to Alexa instead of her own birth name. Little Emily has been regularly listening to her parents calling to activate their Amazon Echo Dot which responds to the name Alexa. Now her parents, who posted a funny video online this week, say their young child is confused and won’t respond to her real name. Emily appears to completely ignore her own name when her parents, Charlotte and Andy Moultrie from Douglas in the Isle of Man, call on her. The couple purchased the Amazon Echo Dot device when Emily was only fivemonths-old and have been using it ever since. In the video you can hear Charlotte ask, "Emily? Emily..?" without any response from her child. Only when she says "Alexa?" does the little girl respond. "No, your name’s Emily, not Alexa!" she continued, "Oh my god, what am I going to do?" Charlotte posted the viral video on the popular social media App, Tik Tok, where it gained traction and has garnered over a million views.
Trump must back down Donald Trump’s efforts to get the American people on side has taken another step backwards following last week’s campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This was supposed to be his piece de resistance and the proper start of his bid to get re-elected – instead it was poorly supported and courted controversy.
Trump would argue that he would never ever back down and, ever the showman, used legendary rocker Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down’ as a musical backdrop as he addressed the crowd. One problem, Petty’s family did not take kindly to be being unofficially associated with the event. “Trump was in no way authorised to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Amer-
icans and common sense behind,” said a family statement after they issued a cease and desist order against the American president. “Both the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind. Tom Petty would never want a song of his used for a campaign of hate. He liked to bring people together.”

Women in harmony for Safe Ireland The Cranberries hit song ‘Dreams’ has been re-worked and recorded remotely by some of Ireland’s finest female artists in aid of Safe Ireland, the national social change agency working to end domestic abuse and coercive control in Ireland.
Michael Flatley launches raffle appeal for Barnardos Award winning dancer and choreographer, Michael Flatley has launched a raffle to raise much needed funds for Barnardos, Ireland’s leading children’s charity. The lucky winner, and up to 10 dancing friends, could be in with a chance to win a video dance lesson with the lead dancers from the spectacular ‘Lord of the Dance’ show and receive a personal video message from Michael Flatley himself. Barnardos works with over 20,000 children and families in 41 centres across Ireland, providing support where it’s needed most. All funds raised through this competition will go directly towards ensuring the children’s charity can continue its vital work, which includes providing one to one family support and delivering food and care packages during the COV-
ID-19 pandemic. “We are delighted to team up with Michael Flatley on such an exciting raffle," Mary Gamble, Barnardos Director of Fundraising said. "The funds raised will go directly towards our work with vulnerable children in communities across Ireland, many of whom are living with domestic abuse, parental mental health challenges, neglect, acrimonious separation and family breakdown and addiction. We would like to thank Michael Flatley and all at ‘Lord of the Dance’ for their support. The money raised will ensure we will continue to reach, and provide support to, children that need us most. I implore the public to donate what they can, and be in with a chance to win this phenomenal prize!” The public can enter the raffle through Givergy.
Kerry’s lawyer to soccer stars dies in London A London solicitor, famed for his role as a legal advisor to Irish soccer stars, who passed away this week, had strong Kerry connections. Michael Kennedy who advised such stars as Roy Keane, Frank Stapleton, Pat Jennings, Kevin Moran, Niall Quinn, Denis Irwin, and Steve Staunton, was aged in his 70s. Though London-born, Kennedy’s father hailed from Inch and his mother was a Cork woman. A life-long soccer fan, he was able to weave his hobby into his working life. A native of Highgate in the north of London, it was only natural that he support-
ed Arsenal and was a life-long season ticket holder at Highbury Stadium. As a young solicitor he was able to mix his hobby with his professional life and, through his partnership at the Herbert Reeves law firm he managed contracts for several Irish soccer stars as they made their first tentative steps in the UK. Such was his love of the game, he rarely asked for an agent’s fee, instead opting for free tickets to big games. He famously handled Roy Keane’s legal affairs during the 2002 World Cup in Japan when the outspoken Cork player and Republic of Ireland team manager Mick McCarthy clashed and Keane got sent home.
A collective of Irish female artists have come together to raise desperately needed support for the charity which helps women and children living in crisis. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a 25 percent rise in domestic violence calls to An Garda Síochana reported in Ireland. Irish Women In Harmony are some of Ireland’s most talented and accomplished musicians, together amassing over 200 million Spotify streams. The single had its first play on 2FM’s Tracy Clifford Show and the video premiered on The RTE Six O’Clock News. Grammy nominated singer/songwriter and producer of this cover version RuthAnne came up with the initiative. "There are so many amazing trailblazers and emerging female artists and musicians in Ireland," she said. "In what sometimes seems like a male dominated industry in this country, we feel like it’s important to inspire the young girls of today by showcasing all
of the incredible women in Irish music. More importantly, we wanted to come together as the Irish Women in Harmony to raise awareness and funds for a charity close to all of our hearts, Safe Ireland, who support domestic abuse victims and survivors. During lockdown the rates of reported abuse have risen and we want to help in whatever way we can. We are covering an iconic song, Dolores was an influence and inspiration to all of us so we wanted to pay homage to her. Having all of us coming together, women supporting women is exactly what’s needed and we hope this movement spreads far and wide and inspires others." All proceeds made from the release of Irish Women in Harmony’s cover of 'Dreams' by The Cranberries will go to Safe Ireland.

The announcement follows an open call issued to artists nationally in February to apply for the opportunity to create portraits honouring the contributions of Beatrice Alice Hicks, Katherine Johnson, Dame Kathleen Lonsdale, Marie Maynard Daly and Kathleen (Kay) McNulty. All five are regarded as pioneers in STEM, making significant contributions in their specific discipline, through outstanding research work, scientific breakthroughs and lasting cultural and social change for future generations. GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney

Which roses to choose for your garden Last week’s article on roses seemed to throw up more questions than answers, so I decided to continue with the theme this week! The main question is, which rose to choose? As with everything related to gardening, I feel we must choose the perfect balance between work and result! If you believe the result is worth endless hours of work, or if you have a lot of time, then any rose is for you. However, if you are a gardener who likes to sit back and enjoy results with minimum of effort, or if you have a busy life, well then, you are a little more limited. “Wild” roses, such as Rosa glauca, Rosa rugosa or rambling roses are often the most resilient roses you can buy. Rosa glauca rubrifolia has beautiful bronze foliage with bright pink single flowers. The hips are spectacular in the autumn. Rosa rugosa is commonly used as hedging, being vigorous and disease free. There is a great variety suitable for any garden called ‘Frau Dagmar Hastrup’ which is pale pink. Very fragrant flowers are followed by large orange hips on a dainty bush which stays small at 3ft. Rambling roses are an easy alternative to climbing roses but do lack the large blooms of a climber such as ‘Paul’s Scarlet’. Rambles are an easy group to prune as they sprout directly from the ground so they can be cut back almost to ground level if they get too big. Other than that there is no need to prune them at all, making them ideal to grow over ditches. Climbers grow from a graft and need attentive pruning. Take the main three or four stems and train them in the direction you want them to grow in. Prune them when they reach the desired height. Thereafter prune the side-
shoots, keeping in mind the shape! Prune in late autumn or early spring. Carpet roses are an excellent choice for many gardens; they put up with wind, rain, drought and any other adverse conditions thrown at them. They are disease resistant and only need a light prune. Growing at 2ft high, 3ft wide, they are ideal in both mixed borders and in groups. Hybrid tea roses, floribunda roses and David Austin roses, all require a little more care. If you are diligent however there is not much to it. Prune roses in spring just before the leaves start appearing. In general, cut away diseased or dead wood, then prune into shape. Slant the cut away from the bud below that cut. Start spraying with a chemical such as Rose Clear early on in the growing season to prevent blackspot which is a fungus, with spores carried in the rain, so there is little we can do organically. Make sure to remove and destroy all affected leaves. Greenfly are the second problem to look out for. Often if you kill the first batch thoroughly, the problem will be lessened for the rest of the year. The aphid’s lifecycle is an interesting one. The first lot which hatch in spring are wingless, and lay their eggs on the same plant as where they are born. This next generation has wings, so the problem spreads. This is good to know in a greenhouse situation where the explosion of greenfly can actually be controlled fairly easily! The first batch can be squished and there is little need for chemicals.

Council welcomes funding for enterprise hubs in Kerry Kerry County Council has welcomed the announcement by Minister Seán Canney of financial support of €300,000 for enterprise hubs along the Atlantic Economic Corridor to assist them in reopening for business. The investment will be made by the Department of Rural and Community Development through the Western Development Commission as part of the Atlantic Economic Corridor Enterprise Hub Network project. Kerry has a considerable range of business networks and a strong enterprise and economic infrastructure including a number of enterprise hubs. These include the recently opened RDI Hub in Killorglin, the Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub, the Tom Crean Business Centre in Tralee, the Killarney Technology Innovation Centre, Sneem Digital Hub, the Carnegie in Castleisland, as well as a number privately-owned enterprise hubs. The Kerry enterprise hubs play an important role in
the development of enterprise and the retention of talent in local communities, through the promotion and facilitation of remote working, hub-working, co-working, indigenous job creation, innovation and entrepreneurship. Hub managers along the AEC region will be invited to join a webinar on Tuesday, June 30, titled ‘A Practical Guide to Reopening Your Hub’. Attendees will learn how to prepare to reopen their hubs and plan to operate safely internally with staff and hub users. Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership is one of 29 Local Sports Partnerships who are coming together to celebrate a day of physical activity and sport and want you to join in and be active. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership has been working hard to ensure the people of Kerry remain physically active. As part of a national network, Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership has adapted by using online resources, printed booklets and other innovative means, to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to share in the enjoyment as well as the mental and physical health benefits of sport and physical activity. International guidelines recommend children are active for at least 60 minutes a day and adults for 30 minutes a day, and the national ‘BeActive Day’ is a fun and inclusive way of getting in your daily physical activity. “You can do it just for fun or add a competitive element by keeping scores or splitting into teams," Córa Carrigg, Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership Co-Ordinator said. "No matter what you do, we encourage you to be active and
have some fun, and let’s make Kerry the most active county this weekend!” The Local Sports Partnerships have developed a printable list of games and activities to give you some inspiration, all of which are fully adaptive for people of all abilities and skill levels. With suggestions to make the games harder or easier, there is a game for everyone. Simply print out the games or display them on your phone. Or why not create your own games, activities or challenges. Our new columnist James Knoblauch gives his local spin on national issues
Why have the Greens struggled to return to the Kingdom?
Airport retains all staff ahead of resumption of flights Kerry Airport Ireland has announced that, despite a critical fall in revenue, it will retain its entire workforce on pre-COVID-19 pay rates. This is part of a plan aimed at maintaining the airport’s viability as air travel returns to normal in the coming months. 2020 has been a devastating year for aviation and Kerry Airport, like all airports, has endured its worst downturn in living memory. It is the expectation of all experts in the industry that it will be 2023 before there is a return to the activity that was enjoyed in 2019. To ensure full employment at the airport a new resource system, with the flexibility to schedule the team when they are most needed, is in development. “I must commend and thank the staff at Kerry Airport who have shown tremendous commitment and resilience in the face of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic," CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said. "They remained at work throughout the crisis while shifts were developed to keep them safe. We are clearly facing into a different future and we have resisted taking the option that has been experienced elsewhere to lay-off staff, cut wages and reduce hours. Over the coming weeks, with the introduction of the new and more efficient scheduling system, it is our intention to see all staff return to full pay, full hours and full employment. The success of this reorganisation will determine whether further and more difficult deci-
sions are required down the line.” This positive development for staff at Kerry Airport has been announced ahead of the resumption of Ryanair flights in July. Routes to London (Luton and Stansted), Manchester, Frankfurt Hahn, Berlin, Alicante, Faro are set to commence soon while the twice daily Aer Lingus Regional Kerry-Dublin service, operated by Stobart Air, has continued to operate throughout the pandemic. Kerry Airport Ireland has introduced enhanced measures to protect staff and passengers who are passing through the airport. Passengers must wear a face mask on entering the terminal and throughout their journey through the airport and on the aircraft. Now more than ever, passengers must arrive in plenty of time for their flight and anyone not flying, when possible, should not enter the terminal. “Kerry Airport continues to be an important strategic asset to Kerry in strengthening transportation links both nationally and internationally and we will play a greater economic role than ever when attracting investment and tourists to the region,” Mr Mulhern said.
For the town that elected Ireland’s first Green councillor in 1985, the Green Party has remarkably little presence in Killarney today. Since their initial breakthrough in Killarney, the party has enjoyed varied success throughout the country, entering into Government in 2007, securing the fourth largest vote share in 2020 and subsequently being courted by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael as a coalition partner. At the ground zero of Green Party electoral success, things have gone the other way. The 2019 local elections saw no Green candidate in the Killarney electoral area and at the 2020 General Election, they mustered just over five percent of first preference votes in Kerry. With the Greens again at the fore of the national conversation, it could be asked why have the Greens struggled to return to the Kingdom? It seems to me that perception plays a large role in the success of the Greens. They are frequently accused of being no friends of rural Ireland and they often play into this accusation. Eamon Ryan, the Green Party leader, previously remarked that a village in rural Ireland of 300 only needed 30 cars to get by. I wonder how Green Party canvassers would be received at the doorsteps in the rural parishes of Glenflesk or Kilcummin if residents there were told they didn’t deserve to own their own cars? How would Mr Ryan’s constituents in Dublin Bay South react if Michael Healy-Rae suggested that Dubliners should have to carpool to get around? In 2019, Mr Ryan suggested the National Broadband Plan unfairly benefited rural areas, asserting “we’re giving a
better deal to rural Ireland than to my constituents”. I would invite Mr Ryan out to the Clydagh Valley to see how wrong he is, but the signal is so bad here that I’d be afraid he’d get lost. Studying in Dublin and living in a rural area, I know the idea that rural Ireland has fared better than Dublin when it comes to broadband is as ridiculous a suggestion as reintroducing wolves into rural Ireland. Unfortunately, Mr Ryan actually seems more concerned with bringing back the wolf, a predator that hasn’t been in Ireland for centuries, than attending to the problems facing rural Ireland. With the beliefs of their leader, it is no wonder that voters in Kerry have yet to warm again to the Greens. Condescending and arrogant views of rural Ireland serve only to reinforce the idea of the Greens as the party of liberal, wealthy, South Dubliners. The Greens play an important role in raising awareness of environmental issues, but through their patronising view of life outside of Dublin, they subvert their positive work. If the Green Party votes to support the programme for Government, then they will have a large role in the next Government. If they reject it, we might be back to the polls and I think the Greens will find negotiating with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael easier than trying to get votes in Killarney. But in case I’m wrong and the Greens once more find success in the town of their genesis, I’d like them to know that I’d prefer to get functioning broadband before they give us the wolves.
Fáilte Ireland unveils new domestic marketing campaign Fáilte Ireland has revealed its new national domestic marketing campaign to the tourism and hospitality industry. ‘Ireland, make a break for it’ will go live across the media this weekend in what will be a major drive to encourage people to take domestic breaks this summer. The National Tourism Development Authority is also launching a new COVID-19 Safety Charter initiative designed to boost public confidence in the safety of businesses as the tourism sector reopens from June 29.
The details of both campaigns, worth in the region of €4m, were revealed by Fáilte Ireland at a virtual industry event yesterday (Thursday) for hundreds of tourism businesses from across the country. As the country continues to progress along the Government’s Roadmap for reopening society and business, intention to take a break in Ireland among Irish consumers is growing, and Fáilte Ireland expects this to continue at a measured pace as restrictions are revised. According to Fáilte Ireland’s latest consumer sentiment research 57 percent of Irish people
are now planning a short trip in Ireland in the next six months. However, safety is a significant concern for people, with visible safety measures and social distancing emerging as strong themes. “The domestic market will be hugely important for Irish tourism and hospitality businesses across the country as we re-build the sector over the coming months," Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, said. "I very much welcome these new initiatives by Fáilte Ireland, which are intended drive growth across the domestic market.”
Speaking on Fáilte Ireland’s new domestic marketing campaign and the COVID-19 Safety Charter, Paul Kelly, CEO Fáilte Ireland, said almost nine in 10 (87 percent) want to ensure that the appropriate safety measures are in place if they are to consider taking a domestic break in Ireland this year. Our new domestic marketing campaign will encourage people to book a break, while our COVID-19 Safety Charter will reassure them that the tourism and hospitality businesses that they visit have committed to adhere to the correct safety measures and hygiene protocols.”

Killarney priest marks 50 years of priesthood in Nottingham Fr Michael O’Donoghue, who is originally from Tiernaboul, has celebrated 50 years in the priesthood in his adopted home of Newark, Nottinghamshire, England.
Following a conversation with the then Dean of St Brendan’s College, Monsignor John Moynihan five weeks before his Leaving Certificate exams in 1964, Michael decided to enter the priesthood. In September of that year, he and 65 other first-year seminarians joined All Hallows Missionary College in Dublin. “There were 201 other students covering a six year period of training, all dressed in black soutanes and Roman Collars – a big change from playing football in Keefe’s Field in Spa,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. On completion of his studies a toss of a coin decided his future. He was offered a choice of joining Kerry missionaries in either Sacramento, California or Notting-

Late last year he was installed as the Honorary Canon of St Barnaba’s Cathedral in Nottingham by Bishop Patrick McKinney. A special celebration was due to take place last week but pandemic restrictions prevented it going ahead and instead he celebrated with an online ceremony that was broadcast live from St Barnaba’s Cathedral in Nottingham. “My personal Golden Jubilee of Ordination fell on Sunday, June 14. After Ordination in the College Chapel on June 14, 1970 he was appointed to St Joseph’s Oakham as Assistant Priest to Fr Michael Lynch from Longford. Four years later he was sent to England for the first time, to the parish of St Alban’s in Derby, where he served 54,000 people living in one housing estate. In 1980, he was appointed Director of Youth Services for the Nottingham Diocese, covering the counties of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Rutland. From 1991 to 2000 he served as the parish priest and dean of Leicester before an eight-year stint as parish priest and Dean
ing invited to a Service of Anointing and Holy Communion on Saturday 13, with a final flourish of invited guests to a Sunday evening Mass led by Bishop Patrick McKinney, Bishop of Nottingham, followed by a party for guests and parishioners,” he said. “Like many other events, those plans fell by the wayside when COVID-19 raised its ugly head. But it was so good to be able to livestream the Jubilee Mass on the day. Many people participated virtually including my family members who had planned to be here for the occasion.” Fr Michael is still a regular visitor to his hometown, the Kelliher family in Tiernaboul and the O’Donoghue family in Coolcaslagh are always on his visiting list. His sister Margaret lives in Lombardstown, Cork and is married to the son of a Minish man, Donie O’Sullivan, and his brother Sheamus lives in Ballycasey, Co Clare and is married to Margaret O’Dwyer from Templemore Co Tipperary. He is an accomplished golfer and former track and field athlete. “The days of cross-country running in the fields of Killarney may be the memories of youth, but 18 holes whenever the opportunity lends itself keeps the competitive heart beating away and the spirits high, as well as being able to come home on holiday and spend home-from-home time with my brother Sheamus and his family and my sister Margaret and her family.”

I liked it because we are literally women in music and we always get written about that way, so it seemed cool to make it our own and control the narrative." Este added: “I just thought it was funny, plus the initials are WIMP3. Wimp is a hilarious word."

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
How to start a fitness routine right now! If you Google “how to start a workout routine”, you’ll see some great advice and maybe some not so great advice. We believe that the easiest to follow is the most effective advice. For example, the Mayo Clinic has five steps for you: 1. Assess fitness level. 2. Design program. 3. Assemble equipment. 4. Start. 5. Monitor progress. As coaches we really buy into their advice, but those five steps are really far from simple for the average person. For example, most people don’t know how to assess fitness, and even fewer know how to design a programme and monitor progress. We use an in-body composition scanner and benchmark workouts amongst other things for this. And while you can start a programme with minimal equipment, fitness equipment isn’t cheap. So, if you buy anything, you want to make the right decision. But what do you buy and is that “must have” gear actually right for you? Let’s be clear; we want you to start a fitness programme, and the most important thing is to be active. First, get moving regularly and then progress over time. You can literally start with a short daily walk. Increase the distance a little every day and you’ll see some progress! But the Mayo Clinic list puts a lot of pressure on a person to research, plan, purchase and assess. That can be overwhelming! We know this because a lot of our current clients came to us after trying to start a programme, but be-
came totally confused. Some even quit trying altogether before eventually calling us. We’re going to simplify the Mayo Clinic list for you. All you have to do is work on number four - start! Simply show up! Just start by coming to talk to us - that’s it! Forget all the other stuff that can get complicated. You’re in charge of number four only. We’ve got everything else covered! We can help you start working out! We are experts in assessing fitness levels, designing programmes and monitoring results. It’s what we do every day and we love it! We also have all the equipment you’ll ever need. We can even help you with number four because we can motivate you and inspire you. To be honest, that’s our real super-power; making fitness fun. If something is fun you’re more likely to keep coming back for more! What’s not fun is trying to figure it out on your own. Ever tried to change a tyre, assemble a barbecue or create a spreadsheet without the right knowledge and tools? It’s frustrating! We promise to completely eliminate frustration and give you the perfect plan to help you accomplish your fitness goals - any fitness goals. We’ll even tell you how you’ll know you’re making progress - and how to speed things up. The Mayo Clinic is one hundred percent correct; “starting a fitness programme may be one of the best things you can do for your health”. You don’t have to figure out what to do and buy a bunch of gear. All you have to do is visit www.activate.ie and book an appointment to talk with us!

Final countdown to CAO Change of Mind
As we approach the end of June, the CAO Change of Mind deadline of July 1 at 5.15pm is very much on the minds of the Class of 2020. This is the last opportunity for you to make changes to the courses you hope to pursue in the autumn. After what has been an exceptionally difficult year filled with much uncertainty it is important at this stage to review once again the choices you have included for Level 8 and Level 7/6 courses. Take note of the following tips in your review:
LIST YOUR COURSES IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE:
This is the golden rule. None of us have a crystal ball to see what the points will be for the various courses or what results you will get. Include courses on both sides of the CAO (Level 8 and Level 7/6). This gives you the best chance of getting two offers when the Round 1 Offers come out after the Leaving results are issued (the top choice you qualify for on each list). You will then have to choose which one you prefer. Fill up as many courses as you can. You have the option to fill up 10 on both sides, giving you 20 possible options for college in the new academic year.
You can add in courses at this stage that were not on your original application but ‘Restricted Courses’ cannot be added in at this stage. Ensure you research in detail any course that you are including on your CAO application – check entry requirements, modules, placement opportunities and career options from the course. Make use of the extensive information that is available online currently and from the last couple of weeks from the different faculties in the various colleges. This takes the format of webinars and live Q&A sessions. Many of the sessions have been recorded and are available on the college websites and various social media platforms so check out the colleges you are considering. These are invaluable as they include testimonials from students who are studying or have completed the courses recently and the expertise of college lecturers.
HEAR/DARE APPLICATION OUTCOMES:
Those of you who applied for the HEAR and/or the DARE Schemes will
have received notification of the outcome of your applications on Tuesday last, June 23 via your cao.ie account and email. If you have any queries as a result of those outcomes you can contact the relevant staff in the various colleges on the following links, www. accesscollege.ie and www.accesscollege.ie. As the class of 2020, you have had the most turbulent of years as Leaving Cert students. So much has been taken out of your control including the exams! That said the most important decision is still very much in your hands. You have full control of the choices you decide to put in your CAO applications and the other applications you make to Colleges of Further Education and apprenticeships. Make sure it’s an informed decision and allow whatever changes you need to before the deadline.
EXCEPTIONAL CLOSING DATE:
Subject to some exclusions and the usual conditions for Change of Mind, if you are currently an undergraduate student in any year of any of the Higher Education Institutes (HEI) and you entered that HEI through the CAO system in the first place, you may submit

Irish motorcycle star steps into help local racer A young Killarney motorcycle racer is to get one-on-one tuition from one of Ireland’s best racers ahead of his British debut next month. Kevin Coyne is planning an extended series of UK events in the absence of any Irish racing this year. Earlier this month, the Killarney-based rider revealed he was turning his attention to the opening rounds of the British Superbike (BSB) Championship and has now added the first round of the Thundersport GB Championship to his schedule which gets underway at Donington Park in Leicestershire on the last weekend of July. One week later the BSB championship opens at the same venue. Ahead of his UK debut, the 18-year-old will this weekend conduct a two-day test session at Mondello Park in County Kil-
dare under the guidance of Caolán Irwin. The Donegal-based racer is one of the rising stars of the Irish motorcycle racing scene having finished second in the Dunlop Irish Masters last year. Irwin and his older brother Rhys have previously contested events in both the BSB and Thundersport GB championships and is now offering his experience to the young Killarney rider. “He is super-experienced and to have someone like that ride with me and watch my progress is a massive boost,” Coyne told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am very excited to be heading to England, there are far more opportunities over there and I just want to make the most of it.” Coyne launched his UK season outside Robertinos Restaurant on Tuesday. The popular High Street eatery is one of his chief local sponsors for the season ahead.

New date for historic rally Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC) has revealed a new date for its annual Rentokil Initial Historic Rally and is hopeful that all pandemic related restrictions will be lifted in time to allow the event go ahead. The rally, which was originally set to run on December 5, is now scheduled for November 28. Several other rescheduled events are taking place at the Gleneagle Hotel on the original date and the November slot will allow for slightly longer daylight hours. The club has begun initial preparations
for the event but all future decisions will depend on the Government lifting further restrictions and other virus-related guidelines. It is understood that KDMC is considering using remote roads with little or no residents and that side events like the town centre ceremonial start and a prize giving ceremony could be removed from the event’s schedule to comply with crowd-gathering rules. Like all events, in the early planning stages, decisions remain fluid and the club is ready to act either way depending on further restrictions or the future easing of large event and crowd-gathering rules.

Hectic schedule for Paul Nagle Killarney co-driver Paul Nagle could contest as many as nine international rallies, in eight different countries, in an 18-week period if the planned full-time resumption of motorsport gets the go ahead across the globe. The Killarney man and his driver Craig Breen were always supposed to contest the European Rally Championship at the wheel of an MRF Tyres supported Hyundai i30 R5, but their season never got off the ground as Coronavirus restrictions shut the sport down across Europe. Last week, the FIA, the sport’s world governing body, revealed a revised European Rally Championship calendar taking in seven rescheduled events from Latvia to the Canary Islands. They will also defend their Ypres Rally, Belgium title and are in line to contest an Italian championship event in early August. Like all events in the current climate, the programme depends on travel restrictions being fully lifted across Europe and other pandemic related regulations. “We have a full schedule and all we can do now is prepare as if that is what is happening,” Nagle said. “But all this can change in a minute.” Their first ERC outing is the Rally di Roma
Capitale on the weekend of July 24-26. They plan to return to Italy for the following weekend’s Alba Rally, an Italian event that the Hyundai Motorsport team is contesting in force and will drive a factory-supported i30 R5 car in this rally. Rally Latvia is set for August 14-16 and this is followed by the Czech Republic’s Barum Rally Zlin from August 28-30. Originally scheduled for late March as the opening round of the 2020 ERC, the Azores Rally will now take place from September 17-18 as round four of the revised season. Before Breen and Nagle tackle the fifth round, the Cyprus Rally on October 16-18, they will defend their (non-championship) Ypres Rally title in Belgium on the first weekend of October. Rally Hungary, on November 7 and 8, will mark the penultimate round of the restructured championship which will conclude with May’s rescheduled Rally Islas Canarias on the last weekend in November. Nagle and Breen’s current schedule does not include potential World Rally Championship outings. The FIA is due to release a revised calendar, today (Friday), and the Kerry/Waterford pairing are hopeful of further WRC outings once the schedule of events is confirmed.

In loving memory of Patrick Fleming late of Scartlea, Muckross, Killarney who died on 18th June 2009.
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one, I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done, I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days, I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun, Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.
On a quiet morning, You heard the angels call, You took the hand of Jesus, And quietly left us all, In a world full of people, We sometimes feel alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.
Greatly missed and remembered with much love always. Paul, Aileen, Anne, Michael and the late Michele and families.

Happy Monday All sporting activity may resume from Monday, June 29 Sporting organisations all over the country are mulling over a quicker-than-expected return to action after Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced last weekend that all sports-related activity can restart from Monday, June 29. The news has come as a pleasant surprise to many players, supporters and officials who had been anticipating a slightly longer lead-in period after more than three months on the sidelines. Many sporting bodies are expected to hold off on allowing competitive matches for at least a few weeks, however, to allow clubs to get back up and running and make the necessary adjustments that will help limit the spread of COVID-19.
GAA
Adult teams around the country are permitted to return to their training grounds for non-contact training as of Wednesday of this week with contact training, as well as challenge matches, officially allowed from Monday on. However, anecdotal evidence suggests
that a number of clubs are already engaging in contact training and have been for a number of weeks. Non-contact training for underage teams will also commence from Saturday. All players and participants in training must complete an eLearning module and follow all measures in place. The accelerated return to action is potentially good news for the GAA club player as the extra weeks have been afforded to the club scene. According to a draft schedule that was sent out to clubs the week before last, the Kerry Club Championship was due to start on August 1 and run until mid-October. The potential is now there to resume activity a couple of weeks earlier, from July 17. The CCC met on Tuesday night to discuss revisions to that draft schedule and a revised fixture list is expected to be circulated at some stage this week. Proposals such as completing the Club Championship before starting the County Championship and staging County League games during free weekends were on the agenda.
SOCCER
The Kerry District League have wasted no time in scheduling fixtures with competitive action to kick-off on the weekend of July 18/19. The KDL is one of the few leagues in the country who did not either cancel or declare winners of the 2019/20 season so they are planning on playing the remaining matches between mid-July and October. With a number of cup competitions also to be staged alongside the league (which is roughly half-completed), some of the top clubs may still have as many as 14 matches to play. Killarney Celtic are in a strong position in the Premier Division as they lie one point behind leaders Castleisland with a game in hand, and they also have an FAI Junior Cup quarter-final to look forward to. That tie at home to Fairview Rangers of Limerick is fixed for Saturday, July 25.
BASKETBALL
Basketball Ireland’s Return To Play (RTP) group met on Tuesday to consider all recent developments. “We are pleased that the return to sport has been brought forward by the Gov-
ernment, but we are keenly aware that we all must remain careful on the resumption to adhere to all the guidelines, which are for the benefit of the health and welfare of our members and supporters,” Chairman of the RTP, Charles Higgins, said. From June 29, up to 50 people can gather indoors on one court to train for basketball. Close contact is allowed but social distance rules must still be applied. Every player must also have their own ball. Players from one family may share a ball.
RUGBY
The IRFU welcomed the government’s announcement regarding the return of sport on June 29 but they said discussions must take place before they can provide any fixed dates for competitive matches. “The IRFU in consultation with the provinces will assess the latest update from the Irish government and will communicate with clubs in due course,” an official statement read. Rugby’s governing body in Ireland had previously indicated that action would begin again in September.

26.6.2020
A ‘sexy’ (if slightly unfortunate) name, a Crokes/Legion-inspired kit and a busload of groupies. In the summer of 1975, a band of wide-eyed teenagers with dreams of conquering Kerry soccer formed a new club called the Killarney Rangers. A little over a year later, they were gone. This week Adam Moynihan spoke to former players Diarmuid O’Donoghue and Tom Griffin about Killarney’s forgotten team. Adam Moynihan: Who were the Killarney Rangers? Tom Griffin: We all came from the Franciscan Youth Club, which was very strong at the time, and most of us were in the Parish Hall Youth Club as well. We were all mates. Diarmuid O’Donoghue: Yeah, there was a gang of us. We were all from within a two-mile radius of Killarney. There were fellas from the Park Road, we had town fellas like Mike Buckley, and myself and my brother Donal were the farthest out. We had five-a-side indoor soccer teams that played in the Parish Hall.
TG: That was a big thing at the time. Every year there was a big indoor soccer tournament. Kelly’s Villas were the kingpins; they were always the team to beat. DOD: We were the rivals as such. We were mostly Legion but we had Mike Buckley, Colm Galvin and Jerry O’Leary as well who would have all been Crokes. TG: There was a Franciscan Friar here in town, Fr Vivian. He was very involved with the youth club. He moved on to Waterford and in 1975 he contacted us about doing an exchange. So off up to Waterford we went and part of the day was a soccer match between ourselves
and the local club. We thought we were something special after that so we said, “why not go into the league?” That’s kind of where the whole thing came from. AM: What made you want to form your own team? Why not join Killarney Athletic? DOD: We were too young. We were only kids at the time. You’re talking 16/17/18. We didn’t even think about joining them. TG: Athletic were very supportive, though. They played us in challenge matches ahead of our first season in the KDL. AM: ‘Rangers’ is a rather unusual name for an Irish soccer club. What was the thinking there? DOD: We had no idea about Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic. It was just a sexy name. TG: We were thinking more in terms of the Texas Rangers than Glasgow Rangers! DOD: We were also oblivious to the
fact that Canon Michael Lyne, one of the Lynes of Cleeney and a great Legion man, was the patron of Glasgow Celtic. We didn’t know any of that. They were probably thinking to themselves, “Killarney Rangers?!” TG: We did everything wrong that we could do wrong. What people might not realise now is that we were only just after coming out of the ban (on members of the GAA playing or attending foreign sports). I think ‘71 was when the ban was lifted. The GAA was still totally and utterly dominant. The attitude of the old lads in the cloth caps was very much, “keep these boys down”. AM: Diarmuid, you went on to have a fine Gaelic football career and you lined out with Kerry during the Golden Years. Was anything said to you about playing soccer? DOD: No. My father (Jameso) was the chairman of the Legion at the time but he never said a word to me. Can you im-
YOUNG GUNS: The Killarney Rangers team that lined out in the 1975/76 Kerry District League. Back: Joe Howe, Neilie O’Keefe, Mike Buckley, Donal O’Donoghue, Jimmy Reen, Mike Murphy, Mikey Lyne and Mike Hickey (referee). Front: Ray Hoctor, Pat Reen, Eamon Murphy, Colm Galvin, Diarmuid O’Donoghue, Tom Griffin and Paddy O’Donoghue (manager).

agine the hassle he must have been getting in the pub or above in Legion from staunch GAA fellas? AM: Did the soccer ever clash with the football? TG: We probably weren’t on the go for long enough to actually get into confrontation. DOD: And we were a bit young. We were just on the periphery of the Legion seniors so it wasn’t a big issue. AM: Where did the black and green kit come from? DOD: That’s a good question now. Two interesting facts about the jersey. First of all, it was not Irish-made, which would have been a big thing at the time. And secondly, one of our fellow Legion clubmates, Weeshie Fogarty, wore one of those jerseys when he refereed intercounty matches. AM: Really? That’s amazing. TG: I’ll tell you another good one. We had two teams in the Parish Hall five-aside: an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team. We discreetly made ourselves the ‘B’ team and the other lads the ‘A’ team so they’d think they were the best! The two sides met in the semi-final so there had to be a change of jerseys, and we got our hands on a set of Legion ones. We won the toss and because all the Crokes boys were on the ‘A’ team, we put them in the Legion jerseys! The ‘B’ team won the tournament out in the end.
AM: Brilliant. Where did the idea for the design come from? DOD: It was Legion and Crokes, basically. That’s what it came down to. Green for Legion and black for Crokes. We had black shorts and black and green socks. TG: Most of the time, it was whatever socks came out of the washing machine. AM: Where did you play your matches? DOD: Up by St Finan’s. When you go up Lewis Road and turn back the avenue towards the hospital, in there on the righthand-side. AM: What was it like inside there? DOD: Muck. TG: Yeah, all the pitches were poor at that time. It was by no means the worst pitch in the county. AM: And how did you fare in the Kerry District League? DOD: I’ll put it this way to you: we were all tip-tappy. We thought we were fantastic but we were playing in muck and gutter in Division 2 against (Gaelic) football teams. Scartaglen, Ballydesmond, the Bower from Rathmore… They kicked the s*** out of us. TG: They didn’t have much skill but they had the physical strength. We were all throwing shapes like we were superstars in the making. That summer in ‘75 we played a couple of challenge games and also in a youth club competition out in Millstreet. We felt we did okay. Before we entered the league, we figured that
we were as good as, and maybe better than, what was already out there. DOD: We lost more league games than we won, we’ll put it that way. AM: Who were some of your key men? DOD: Joe Howe was a very good player. Colm Galvin too. Mike Buckley was good. Eamon Murphy was our oldest player at 19. He was one of the centre backs. Very lithe but he could get up for a ball. His brother, Mike, would have been with him at the back. And, of course, Ray Hoctor was there as well. TG: When we started we used to play Ray centre half. For us, he was as big and as strong as we had. And sure he went on to become one of the best centre forwards in Kerry for years. AM: The team broke up in 1976. What happened? DOD: I would say lack of organisation and immaturity. TG: And the age profile as well. A lot of lads were doing the Leaving Cert so they were going off to college and work. The structure just wasn’t there to keep it going. DOD: The league gave us a chance and it was a case of sink or swim. We sank. AM: And Killarney Celtic were founded that very same year. Did many Rangers players make the switch to the Celts? DOD: It was more or less half and half. Some went to Celtic and some went to
69
Athletic. Joe Howe, Mikey Lyne, Ray Hoctor and myself would have been Celtic and Mike Buckley, Pat and Jimmy Reen, Colm Galvin and Tom went to Athletic. TG: I went to Celtic first, actually! AM: How did Celtic manage to succeed where Rangers had failed? DOD: They had a lot of Spa boys which gave them more numbers. And they were more organised. They probably learned from everything that we did wrong. TG: They had a couple of older heads as well. Guys like Byron Holmes and Bill Healy. They were just a little bit more mature and they were sticking around, whereas our fellas were going away. I think there was a groundswell of feeling that there was room for another team in the town. We probably started it but Celtic went on and did it better. AM: All in all, do you have happy memories of your time in the green and black of the Killarney Rangers? DOD: It was great. We really enjoyed ourselves. We carried a big bus to our matches and the women in the youth club used to come along with us. TG: The groupies! It was brilliant, Adam. Playing with your best mates around you and not a care in the world. The craic before and after the matches was magic. Great memories.

Killarney Judo CLIMB: On Sunday, members of Killarney Judo Club met up to climb Mangerton. For us, this was the first time many members had seen each other due to the Covid-19 restrictions. We had members aged from 8 years old to 58 years old and we trekked to the Devil's Punchbowl. As Covid-19 restrictions ease, we plan on fully reopening the club in September. As a contact sport, we want to be cautious for our members and our community. We do plan on following up our hike with some more walks in the future. If anyone is interested in learning more about our club, check us out at killarneyjudo.com. Most importantly, we hope everyone is staying safe and we will see you soon.
