A Killarney resident who has had a new lease of life after getting the gift of a kidney is the face of the first ever Polish campaign for Organ Donation Awareness Week. | By Michelle Crean Anna Pokojska is the only Polish person taking part in the national campaign to reach out to the large Polish community across Ireland. She had her life transformed in 2017 after undergoing a kidney transplant. And now, as a way of giving something back, she decided to take part in the Polish/ Irish campaign which takes place from tomorrow (March 27) to Saturday April 3. Normally Anna helps the organisation by taking part in the annual street collection. However, as that is not able to go ahead this year the charity is instead opting for a digital campaign to get the message of the gift of life for others through organ donation with a poster campaign with
Anna included as one of the faces in the Polish and Irish poster. "I was diagnosed in 2013 aged 31 and it was a shock at first," Anna told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). "They told me I wouldn't need a transplant for years but I needed it sooner than that. It was progressive and I was on dialysis. I was very lucky that I didn't have to wait too long. I've a new lease of life since." In 2019 Anna, who is married to Leszek and has a 16-year-old daughter named Daria, attended the World Transplant Games for the first time and competed in the 30-39 years categories in both the 30k Cycling Road Race and the 5k Mini-Marathon. With such a change in lifestyle since,

"Project will have a transformative impact on the town" - Mayor Plans for five major cycle lanes approved | By Michelle Crean Plans for five major cycle lanes over 3.8kms throughout Killarney town got the seal of approval this week as councillors unanimously voted for it to go ahead. During a five hour long online meeting which saw two amendments, Killarney Municipal District Members voted unanimously to approve the Part 8 Planning process which will include cycle paths at locations including Rock Road – car park northward to N22 roundabout at Cleeny, Upper Lewis Road from the St Anne’s Road Junction to south of Bridgefield, Park Road – from the Park Road roundabout to the Franciscan Friary Junction, Deerpark Road – from the Park Road Junction to Gaelscoil Road Junction, and Gaelscoil Road – from the Deerpark Road to Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. Over 90 submissions were made for the proposed plans with the majority in fa-
vour. One amendment was in relation to parking at Allman's Terrace for up to 10 home owners. Council officials made a commitment to proceed with a Part 8 planning process to provide off-street parking for residents concerned. David Doyle, senior engineer with Kerry County Council, said that although the planning process is a separate issue he sees "no issue" with this going forward. A submission was also made by Martin O'Grady on behalf of residents of Ardshanavooley and Bellville Grove over fears of losing part of their green area. A second amendment was made altering the cycle path from the centre to the green area and will now be moved part outside and part inside in order to minimise its impact, and will include a soft surface pathway and railing along the route. Park Road business owners also raised concerns regarding access for delivery
trucks, car parking and ambulances. David Doyle told the meeting that “engineers will speak to businesses to allay any fears” to minimise any business interruption. Cllr Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan raised concerns about privacy for the residents of Chestnut Drive, which was seconded by Cllr Marie Moloney, calling for a commitment from the Council that a 6ft wall be built. He said that "residents take pride in this estate and all they're asking for is a big wall so that their kids can play safely". However, town Manager Angela McMahon said that the proposed wall "is outside of the scope of Part 8". "I would have concerns with the building of a 6ft wall, Planning would have to be consulted."
A TRANSFORMATIVE PROJECT
Speaking after the vote, Cllr Cronin paid tribute to the Members and the work carried out by Council staff in progressing what he called ‘a transformative project’.
gift of life and the chance to be more active for myself and for my family as I wasn't able to do many things. It's a good thing to have a donor card to help other people." “This project will have a transformative impact on the town," he said. "By providing segregated cycle lanes it will facilitate particularly more vulnerable road users and it will provide important linkages between residential areas, schools and sporting facilities. These improved walking and cycling facilities will have a positive impact on the health and well-being of the community and will help to improve traffic flow by facilitating a modal shift from cars to cycling and walking.” Cllr Cronin highlighted the level of public involvement during the consultation phase. “I was delighted with the very significant levels of community engagement in the process which included an online webinar and over 90 submissions to the planning process. The overwhelming majority of submissions welcome the cycle lanes project and a number of amendments were made to address concerns raised in the submissions. “I also want to pay tribute to the Elected Members who recognised the importance of the project and worked closely with the communities around Killarney, raising issues on their behalf and ensuring that this is a project that will be welcomed round Killarney town.”

FUNDING: Minister Norma Foley pictured outside the Áras Phádraig in Killarney with Mayor of Killarney Cllr Brendan Cronin, Niall Kelliher Chamber President, and Killarney Municipal District Manager Angela McAllen welcoming the funding announcement of over €16m which will include works at this site. Photo: Domnick Walsh
"Work can now begin on Áras Phádraig site" Mayor of Killarney Cllr Brendan Cronin has this week welcomed the allocation of €16.06 million funding for Killarney under the Urban Regeneration Development Fund. | By Michelle Crean Last Friday, it was revealed in the Killarney Advertiser that Minister for Education Norma Foley TD had announced funding of a total of €31.90 million for Killarney and Tralee under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) to enhance urban areas to make them more attractive places to live, work, visit and invest. For Killarney, the funding will go towards the regeneration of the derelict Áras Phádraig town centre site, the Glebe Craft quarter in the town centre, the enhancement of the Arts/Cultural Heritage Experience, and Public Realm improvements at Beech Road, College Street, and
New Street /High Street. Mayor Cronin said that it is critically important funding for the future growth and development of Killarney town which the Council has been campaigning hard for. "I am particularly delighted that the Áras Phádraig has finally been successful and that we can now begin work on this important site," he said. "Back in 2017 when I, along with KMD Manager Angela McAllen, launched the public consultation on the future design of Áras Phádraig, the people of Killarney clearly indicated how important it was to redevelop, redesign and bring back an intimate theatre along with a blend of other facilities to the town centre."
Funding will ensure town is perfectly positioned Confirmation that Killarney is to receive over €16 million under the Government’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund has been described as fantastic news for the town at a time when it was most needed. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said it is a wonderful and timely boost that will give local businesses and the people of the town a much-needed lift after a very difficult and worrying year. He said the regeneration plans for Killarney will ensure great long-term benefits for everybody and the investment will enhance the town centre to the extent that it will match the natural environment that surrounds it. The €16.06 million Destination Killarney grant, which will be administered by Kerry County Council, will fund the regeneration of the entire Áras Pádraig site and the development of the Glebe area as a crafts quarter as well as enhancing the arts and cultural heritage experience. It will also lead to public realm improvements at Beech Road, College Street, New Street and High Street and it will radically improve parking facilities in the town which will be welcomed by everybody. “This is wonderful news for Killarney
and, when completed, the works will ensure that the town is perfectly positioned going forward and it will create the infrastructural environment required to advance with purpose and confidence,” Cllr Kelleher said. “Chamber is very excited about the plans and we look forward to playing our part to ensure Killarney remains the most wonderful town in the country to live in, to work in and to visit,” he said. The Chamber President thanked the officials of Kerry County Council for their great work in preparing the applications for funding and he said Kerry is very fortunate to have such a progressive and innovative team of public officials to rely on. He also thanked Education Minister, Deputy Norma Foley, and her Kerry constituency colleague, Deputy Government Chief Whip, Brendan Griffin, for working tirelessly to bring the project to fruition and for ensuring Kerry got a fair share of the available funding. Cllr Kelleher said the allocation under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund will help create magnificent opportunities for commercial development in Killarney while, at the same time, enhancing the many natural amenities and attractions that make the town the country’s top tourist destination.

Schools donate €5k to cancer charity
Locals schools who came together as one for charity are delighted that their efforts raised over €5,000 which was handed over to charity this week | By Michelle Crean Students from St Brendan’s College, who organised the 'Presents for Palliative' Christmas Jumper Day on December 8, received huge support from fellow students and staff from St Brigid's Secondary, Killarney Community College as well as The Mon, Holy Cross Mercy and St Francis Special School, and members of the wider community. Yesterday (Thursday), students from The Sem happily handed over the proceeds, a total of €5,440 - to the Kerry Hospice Foundation Killarney Branch. "We started our fundraiser as part of our LCVP course," Fifth Year student and Chairperson of the fundraising committee, Kacper Bogalecki from St Brendan’s
College, told the Killarney Advertiser. "After having discussed the different charities we came across the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Moved by the nature of services which they provide, we invited representatives from the foundation to come and speak to us about what is involved in keeping its services going. We soon found out about the amount of work that goes into it, and we wanted to be of help. To do so, we knew we needed the whole community to come together. So, we reached out to neighbouring schools and they were more than happy to participate. We were all very grateful for the support that this fundraiser received and would like to thank all the students, parents and others who donated to this cause.”
The annual Good Friday Walk for the Kerry Hospice Foundation is back this year - but will be very different due to the ongoing restrictions. Last year, as the date was so close to the initial lockdown, organisers had no other option but to cancel the popular annual event. However, this year they've decided to organise it as a virtual event and are calling on the support from locals for what is now being called the 'Long Good Friday Walk'. The walks have become synonymous with and greatly supported by many Kerry communities for over 20 years and in Killarney have been held in memory of Vivien O'Shea and Sheila McGillycuddy over the last number of years. The walks will be done in the safety of a 5km radius, while adhering to all Government guidelines and can be done anytime between now and the end date, Good Friday, April 2. "Sadly, because of the restrictions we were unable to organise the walk last year," Pat Doolan, Chair of the local branch, said. "Now, a year later, with the restrictions still in place, we have decided to do something different. We are asking you to dust off the walking shoes and take to the local highways and byways. This year we also want to remember those of our benefactors and volunteers who have passed away." A donation page on www.iDonate.ie/

LongGoodFriday, has been set up and participants can access it through their social media pages and website. "For those of you who cannot access this page you can contact one of the Killarney Branch members listed below. We are currently entering year three of our three year pledge, in which we have to raise nearly €500,000 annually. These funds aid the running costs of the inpatient unit, the Day Unit and the services that they provide. They also help fund the wonderful home care services. We appreciate your generosity and your ongoing support." You can donate directly to one of the following Killarney Branch members: Pat Doolan 085 1543514, Phyllis O’Sullivan 087 1475364, Cathal Walshe 0861067752, and Dermot O’Reilly on 086 3159803.
Special arrival on Killian's birthday! | By Michelle Crean A very special delivery arrived last week in France - baby Henia Norrie Buckley who has a strong Killarney connection. On March 19, Henia was born on her father Killian's birthday which made her birth even more special for him and his partner Magdalena. Henia is the first grandchild to Tim Buckley and Marina Cassidy from Muckross, and niece to Hollywood actress and local star Jessie, as well as Eva, Julia, and Lily. Her unique name is made up of the nicknames by which two of her great-grand-
mothers were known, Killian explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week. "Henia is short for Henrika, her Polish great-grandmother who is full of fun and has been a great loving presence throughout Magda’s life and who still lives in Lodz, Poland," he said. "And Norrie Buckley of the Arbutus Hotel, who passed away the year before last, was known to many in Killarney as a beautiful, caring and intelligent lady. For me, as my Nana, she only ever had one piece of advice to give on the many occasions when I would ask. "“Just be kind” she would say with her sideways grin. It is a motto I have tried to live by up to this point and it is even
more important now that we live in the COVID era, where there has never been a greater need to be kind to each other. It is something I will be proud to pass down to my daughter, the latest strong Kerry woman in a long and distinguished list of them, for now representing the county from underneath Mont Blanc in Chamonix, France." He added that he's looking forward to a time when they can come home to visit. "Until then, we are grateful for the technology that keeps us connected to those at home. I am grateful to have my roots in such a great place as Killarney where the kindness of nature is always close at hand."

HISTORIC: Committee members from l-r: Dr Tim Horgan (Historian), Derry Healy, Mike Scannell, Tina Healy, Liz Spillane, Seamus Moynihan and Jimmy Kelly met at 3pm on Sunday to mark exactly one hundred years since the Headford Ambush.
RELATIVES: Tina Healy, Listry points out her two relatives, Dan Allman and Dan Healy on the plaque at the Headford Ambush Monument.
A quiet commemoration for Headford Ambush centenary It may not have been the event they had originally planned but members of the Headford Ambush Commemoration Committee quietly marked the centenary on Sunday. | By Michelle Crean At 3pm, approximately the time the ambush began one hundred years ago, the Headford Ambush committee, which included Dr Tim Horgan (Historian), Derry Healy, Mike Scannell, Tina Healy, Liz Spillane, Seamus Moynihan and Jimmy Kelly, gathered to remembered lives lost. It was a poignant visit as not only was a bigger event postponed due to current
COVID restrictions but for the first time the names of the volunteers who took part in the ambush are inscribed on plaques in the monument. The Ambush on British troops at Headford, near Glenflesk, was carried out on March 21, 1921, by 33 members of the Kerry IRA No. 2 Brigade Flying Column. It was the largest ambush in Kerry during the War of Independence. 13 died – eight British soldiers, two IRA
volunteers Dan Allman and Jimmy Baily, and three cattle dealers. A three-year-old girl was also badly wounded in both legs when a bullet passed through her father's leg as he sought to shelter her. The attack, led by Dan Allman and Tom McEllistrim, targetted a detachment of British troops due to return by train from Kenmare to Tralee. Allman, along with Jimmy Baily, died in the attack. McEllistrim went on to be a Fianna Fáil TD. The Headford Ambush was one of the largest engagements of the whole conflict and was certainly the largest engage-
ment between British forces and the IRA to take place in Kerry during the War of Independence. In October, €10,000 was given to the local commemoration committee from the Government to help renovate the existing monument, which was erected in 1971 and had fallen into disrepair. Extensive work has also been done to landscape the whole monument site which is located about 300 yards from where the actual ambush took place. "It was important we met on the day socially distanced to mark the occasion," committee member Derry Healy told the Killarney Advertiser. "We had 11am Mass at Barraduff Church and Fr George Hayes prayed for those involved and lit a candle which he brought down to the site. Originally we had a great day planned, we'd big plans including a marquee, old memorabilia, signs and different things we never had before, so it was disappointing."
United States and Ireland sign Sister Park agreement Killarney National Park and Glacier National Park in Montana, USA have been officially paired in an agreement which will last five years. Signed on Monday in a virtual ceremony the new agreement will see Glacier National Park and Killarney National Park come together as “Sister Parks”. The arrangement furthers international cooperation between the two countries and facilitates collaboration related to the management of both cherished, protected places. The new "Sister Park" relationship joins more than three dozen that exist between US national parks and national parks and protected areas in other countries. Killarney National Park is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service
(NPWS) while Glacier National Park is managed by the US National Park Service. Both have common issues including heavy visitation, controlling exotic and invasive species, outreach with local communities, ecological monitoring, and partnership agreements. The Parks will share best practices through the exchange of technical and professional knowledge, data, technology, training, and possible site visits. “I am delighted that my Department – through the National Parks and Wildlife Service – is entering into a Sister Parks arrangement with US National Park Service by developing best practices and establishing closer links between Killarney National Park and Glacier National Park, Montana. In doing so we will enrich the experience and capacity of the per-
sonnel of both Parks through exchanges of staff and best practices,” Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien said.
OPPORTUNITY
“The collaborative nature of this partnership provides an excellent opportunity to exchange lessons learned related to recreation, preservation and resource management,” Shawn Benge, Deputy Director of the National Park Service, exercising the authority of the Director added. “We are excited about the possibilities to work together and learn from each other.” Minister of State for Heritage at the Department Malcolm Noonan added that both Killarney National Park and Glacier National Park will aim to capitalise on the significant networking knowledge
and sharing opportunities this agreement supports. "Given the natural and cultural resources protected and presented by both organisations, as well as our respective mandates, it is my hope that we use our arrangement as a joint and thus stronger voice to highlight the challenges not only in these two parks but across our nations. “As the world’s first international peace park with Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada, Glacier National Park has a proud history of working with partners beyond our borders to exchange best practices and to learn from one another,” said Jeff Mow, Glacier National Park Superintendent. “We look forward to adding to our history and collaborating with Killarney National Park.”

SUPPORT
Kerry Mental Health Association’s primary objective is to benefit the community through the promotion of the general welfare of people with mental health challenges, including mental illness, and to support these people, their families, and carers. General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, added that “well-being is when you’re feeling good and functioning well. It’s not just about being in good physical condition, but it crucially includes the state of your mental health". "If your mind is not in a good place, there can be a series of knock-on effects that will impact the quality of your overall well-being," he said. "Sometimes we look to others for inspiration. We are grateful to the men and women from the worlds of media, sport, theatre, and business who generously gave their time to share some ways to well-being that work for them to help keep their mental health in check.” The nine Kerry Mental Health Association Branches empower people in communities throughout Kerry to take control of their lives and to make the right decisions to help protect their mental and physical health. Snoop Dogg could sport the green and gold of Kerry! When rap superstar Snoop Dogg takes to the stage at Killarney’s INEC Arena next year, he could well be wearing the famous green and gold jersey of Kerry. The American hip-hop legend - who is due to perform in March 2022 - has a penchant for jerseys and has sported the colours of several high-profile soccer teams while performing in their home cities. From Barcelona to Milan to Liverpool, Snoop has worn some of the most famous shirts in the world, and now Killarney-based online retailer Vintage GAA has offered to kit the LA native out in a classic Kerry jersey for his much-anticipated trip to The Kingdom. Vintage GAA creator Adam Moynihan, who is also the sports editor of the Killarney Advertiser, says it would be a “dream come true” to see a global icon like Snoop Dogg wearing one of his jerseys. “It’s amazing first of all that Snoop Dogg is even coming to Killarney – he’s one of the biggest rappers of all time – but seeing him perform on stage wearing the green and gold would really top it off,” Adam said. “I know he’s a jersey collector himself and he often wears them at his shows, so it would be a real honour to present him with a vintage Kerry GAA jersey to mark his visit. “He’s a tall guy so I think the adidas jersey from 1998 would be a good fit, and I also have a match-worn No. 10 jersey

Replacement of old Beaufort pipes "urgent" A Kerry County Councillor believes that the replacement of some water pipes in the Beaufort area by Irish Water, brought only a temporary relief to the long suffering householders there. Fianna Fáil’s Michael Cahill said that there has recently been an interruption in water supply in parts of Beaufort for the fourth week in a row. “It appears that the replacement of pipes in certain areas gave temporary relief to the householders, but that pressure has now been transferred over to the unreplaced sections of old

pipes and breaks are now occurring regularly. These ongoing leaks and bursts are happening in Carnahone, Dunloe, Ballagh and along the Board of Works road down to Kilcoolaght to name but a few, and it is unfair to expect families to put up with this loss of a basic human requirement.” Repairing pipe bursts also means digging up roads, which is another undesirable knock-on effect, damaging the transport network, he added. “Partial replacement of pipes proved to be only a temporary solution and it is now obvious that a major replacement of all old pipes is urgently required, to

If not attended to, there will be a knock-on effect to surrounding areas including Killorglin, where ageing pipe systems may too come under pressure. The basics of a water supply is a clean product and an efficient delivery system and in this instance the product is well below an acceptable standard. The people of Beaufort have suffered for far too long, Irish Water need to get it right this time, they need to get their act together, they need to replace all the old pipes and reinstate the road network at the earliest possible date.”
Following a campaign by Mr Kelly, new EU measures to prevent online bullying of young people has been named as a political priority by the European Parliament’s largest grouping, the European People’s Party (EPP). A policy paper launched by the EPP Group insists that the forthcoming EU strategy must keep children safe, protect their rights, guarantee their basic needs are met and empower them to thrive in life. “My EPP colleagues and I insist that the new EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child should take the lessons learned due to the rise of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic into account. The strategy needs to include provision for targeting the root cause of online bullying, as well as equipping young people with the knowledge and tools to effectively respond if they experience cyberbullying," Mr Kelly said. “Tragically, children in the EU are still suffering physical, sexual, economic and psychological violence. We cannot tolerate any violence against children and given the increasing time young people spend online, we need to seriously address the dangers the Internet poses. That includes preventing and eliminating child sexual abuse including the detection of child sexual abuse material online, apprehending the perpetrators and providing help and support for victims. These are absolute priorities." He added that the past months have accelerated the already existing trend shifting children’s activities to an online reality. "It is important to provide a high-quality and inclusive education for all children in Europe. Digital literacy is key in order for children to navigate the Internet as safely as possible. This includes ensuring equal access to the digital tools of remote learning. No child should be left behind."

No funds to repair protected church near Beaufort Kerry County Council does not have the funding to repair a protected structure at Kilbonane Cemetery. | By Sean Moriarty A church near Beaufort, which is of historical importance, sits in the southern end of the cemetery and is in danger of collapsing. In recent weeks the Council has fenced off the dangerous structure, a move which has angered locals as it prevents them from visiting the graves of loved ones who are interred there. The earliest known grave at the site stems from 1809 and several well-known local surnames have family plots there. Back in 2009, as part of a survey carried out by the Heritage Department of Kerry County Council recommended that: “Measures should be taken to secure the church from further collapse”. Since the survey the church has fallen into further disrepair which prompted the Council to fence off the structure due to health and safety concerns. This infuriated Cllr Brendan Cronin, the Mayor of Killarney, who called on the Council to take action at the site. “I am requesting urgent repairs to be undertaken on the old church structure which is surrounded with steel fencing

in Kilbonane Cemetery as it is totally unacceptable that family graves and headstones are inside this fencing and nothing is being done to protect them. Are Kerry County Council going to wait until parts of the structure falls on people's graves? Appropriate action must be taken immediately,” he told a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District. A Council engineer explained that the

condition of Kilbonane is a direct consequence of burial within and abutting the structural walls, which destabilises foundations, and the increased frequency of extreme rainfall events washing the mortar out from the walls further weakens the structure. “The cost of simply stabilising the ruin at Kilbonane as it is now with no reconstruction of collapsed sections etc., would be in the range of €50,000 -
€70,000 and Kerry County Council does not have the funding resources to deal with the number of unstable structures currently in our graveyards,” the engineer told the meeting. However, he added that the Council, who have been successful in securing funding for other sites most notably Cloghane and Kilshannig in West Kerry, would look into securing grant funding for potential works at the site.

Footpaths in Pinewood Estate have fallen into disrepair in recent years while the growth in population in the Loreto Road area has increased the need for a safe walkway. At the most recent Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr Marie Moloney called for an upgrade to the footpaths in Pinewood Estate. “Once COVID-19 restrictions ease, the Killarney Municipal Office will carry out an assessment of the footpaths within the Pinewood Estate which will also include a cost estimate,” a Council official said.
At the same meeting, Cllr Maura HealyRae called for a safe walkway on Loreto Road, highlighting that a project of this kind is of "huge importance" given that it is a heavily populated area. The Council replied that it was their policy to provide public infrastructure such as footpaths and public lights within the speed limits of an urban area. “Kerry County Council will investigate the design options for provision of this infrastructure within the speed limits of the urban area,” a Council spokesperson said. Cllr Donal Grady pushed for "the urgent upgrading of footpaths and roads in Coolclogher Estate, Loreto Road". "The Killarney Municipal District Office will consider the roads and footpaths in Coolclogher Estate when drafting the next Three-Year Roads Programme," added the official.

Killarney man pens free investment book You may have already noticed Killarney man Mike O'Connor popping up in our finance section over the last few months, so perhaps it is time for a formal introduction. | By Michelle Crean Mike is a CFA Charterholder but currently working as an investment consultant in the Cayman Islands. After spending seven years working in Ireland's institutional investment space, he moved to the Caribbean, where he now manages investment portfolios for high-net-worth individuals. In recent weeks, Mike has been finalising his first book 'Learn to Invest - A Beginner's Guide' that offers a complete guide to investing. The idea of the one hundred plus page free step-by-step book is to help everyone get started on their investing journey, regardless of age, net worth or past experience. It starts with the most basic investment principles and takes you all the way through to creating your own investment portfolio and buying your first stock. "I simply wanted to create something that strips away the noise and focuses on the core pillars of investing," Mike told the Killarney Advertiser. "Most people have an inherent desire to overcomplicate things these days. In reality, investing isn't anywhere near as complicated as many people make it out to be. Investing is not about picking the perfect investment first time out; I certainly didn't. It's about taking action and implementing basic principles over time. So set aside the excuses, take the necessary steps
to educate yourself, and get started. It's easy to sit on the sidelines rueing missed opportunities, but the reality is, it's far more worthwhile preparing yourself so you can take advantage of future opportunities as they arise. This book will help you do just that." Mike set out to write a book that was straightforward and easy to follow, regardless of prior knowledge about investing, but he also wanted to ensure that people actually put the knowledge they learnt into practice. "Most of the time you are provided with a broad-based commentary on a particular subject without any tangible action plan on how to implement your newfound information. This always frustrated me as I would typically learn something new, contemplate all the ways this new approach could change my life for about five minutes, only to put the book down and proceed to do absolutely nothing about it," he said. "Perhaps this is just me, but in a bid to break from this trend, the 'Learn to Invest' guide has challenges, tasks and actionable tips to make sure you not only learn about investing but also take the necessary steps to make your first investment and put a long-term investment plan in place. For a copy, simply download it from Mike's website www.theislandinvestor. com.

Designs for Kenmare Place/ Haha safety works underway | By Sean Moriarty Designs for enhanced road safety measures at the junction of the Haha and Muckross Road are being prepared by Kerry County Council. This follows the recent completion of a feasibility report by the Council. “Kerry County Council are currently now preparing the Design Report of that said scheme, which on completion will be forwarded to the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for approval,” a Council official told a recent Killarney Municipal

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Repotting and pruning is vital for houseplants These calm, dry, mild days see every gardener outside, planting, pruning and mowing. Our winter friends are soon forgotten about, but this is an important time for them also. What am I talking about; houseplants of course! Having kept our air filtered, our senses happy and our lives filled with flowers and greenery throughout the winter darkness, we tend to place them at the bottom of the list once spring arrives. However, taking care of them now, will ensure they thrive throughout the summer and into the shorter, colder days again. As with all plants, repotting and pruning is vital for houseplants. Repot any plants which are outbound - a sure sign of this is that they dry out quickly, or the water runs through too fast. Use a new pot which is about 2.5cm or an inch larger all the way around. For large plants a bit more is fine too. If you are recycling used pots, disinfect and clean thoroughly - anyone who has had an infestation of whitefly will know the importance of doing this. Also, one single slug can decimate a houseplant.
COMPOST
Which compost to use depends on budget and plant. Most foliage plants and many flowering ones benefit from purpose mixed houseplant compost. This usually comes in fairly small bags which is grand if you have one or two plants, but if, like me, you are repotting an army of plants, the cost can be prohibitive. Houseplant compost has a low nutrient content but is very free draining, which
is important as your plant is always in a pot. I mix two parts seed and cutting compost with one part sand and half part vermiculite and a half part perlite. The seed and cutting compost has a fine composition with a low nutrient content, while the sand adds drainage, the vermiculite regulates moisture and perlite aerates. Orchids and anthuriums need a lighter compost again, I mix one part seed and cutting compost with one part mini bark. Cacti and succulents thrive on one part seed and cutting compost, one part sand and one part perlite. Topping the pot with a light clay pebble, known as hydroleca, will maintain a humid atmosphere around your plants which is beneficial for most. The reason the nutrient content needs to be low, is that houseplants need very little fertiliser, but often. So it is preferable to use a liquid fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season. My preferred option remains Baby Bio, and I would encourage people to use the specially formulated fertiliser for plant type, the orchid fertiliser definitely does the trick! Plants such as mother-in-laws tongue, or sansevieria can be split now, and cuttings can also be taken. Prune houseplants as you would garden plants, i.e. cut out diseased stems, and prune to maintain a good shape. Plants such as the fiddle leaf fig, - which can grow up and up - can be topped in order to encourage a bushier habit.

Grant support for sports businesses, clubs and facilities Kerry’s sports businesses, clubs, and recreational facilities are being invited to register and apply for programme funding support, under the newly launched ‘Keeping Kerry Active’ programme, which will be rolled out across Kerry. The programme, which is being overseen by the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership (KRSP), is encouraging sports businesses, clubs, and facilities to offer and deliver over the coming months, a range of activities in line with the rolling level of restrictions, for the people of the county, with the support of a new recreational fund.
PROGRAMME
The Keeping Kerry Active programme, a Keep Well initiative supported by Sport Ireland and Kerry County Council, aims to support the counties sports businesses, clubs and facilities which have been closed and impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In turn, the providers present and deliver a four-hour offering, which can be either a physical activity or a training and education programme, for the public. Individuals can then sign up to the programmes, explore and possibly gain a new experience of a specific sport or physical activity for four hours. The offerings can be either online or in person when the restrictions lift. In turn, these programmes and the services of the providers will be promoted
by Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership and can offer a suite of sport and physical activity programmes for the people of the county and potentially introduce new clients and members to the county’s sports providers. This approach supports KRSP’s tagline of getting the active more active, and the less active, active. "A detailed programme of activities, in which people of all ages can take part in, will be rolled out in all parts of the county over the next few months. This gives the chance for Kerry people to be more active during the current situation," said Jimmy Deenihan Chairperson of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership.
GRANT SUPPORT
Successful providers will receive grant support up to €400 for providing a four-hour innovative programme, which could catch the imagination of participants while offering a fun and inclusive experience. Providers have the choice to apply for multiple offerings, up to a maximum of three, that will be delivered in line with level of COVID-19 restrictions at a point in time. More information is available on the websites of the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership and Kerry County Council as well as on social media channels.

Ali and Eilís’s BTYSTE project showed relevance to the challenges affecting people in the Global South, and presents potential scientific solutions to these issues. “We were delighted to have been invited to present our project at this year’s ‘Science for Development’ online showcase," Ali said. This year’s showcase offered students
the opportunity to speak about their projects, hear from guest speakers and to interact with other exhibiting students and guests. The event was opened by Colm Brophy, Minister of State for Overseas Development Aid and Diaspora. Presentations included the 2021 winner of the ‘Science for Development’ Aronnya Khan Zakaria from Castletroy College in Limerick on her project ‘The development of racial prejudice in children: a statistical analysis on the influence of society and home life on a child's thoughts and attitudes towards racism’. Students of around 15 different projects got a chance to showcase and discuss their research with each other and invited guests. “We were thrilled to be part of this prestigious event,” Eilís added.

Parking at Blue Pool in the hands of NPWS legal department | By Sean Moriarty The provision of the much needed car parking facility at the popular walking route at the Blue Pool near Mangerton is in the hands of the National Parks and Wildlife Service’s (NPWS) legal department. That is according to a Kerry County Council official who was responding to a request from Cllr Michael Gleeson for an update on the project. Last September the Killarney Advertiser exclusively revealed that Cllr Gleeson and his colleagues in the Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal volunteer group were pushing both the Council and the NPWS to provide car parking facilities at the popular walking amenity. Cllr Gleeson asked at the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting: “That the Council would inform [the meeting] if it has made progress with the NPWS regarding the development of an urgently needed parking area adjacent to the beautiful Blue Pool Walk on Mangerton Road”. A Council official replied: “The Killarney NPWS are currently awaiting legal advice in regard to the disposal of lands. On establishing the feasibility of the
proposed project, the Municipal District will progress plans and examine funding streams that may facilitate this development". Last year the Mountain Meitheal volunteer group refurbished the popular and scenic walking route. Their work included the repair of a special rope along the edge of Bluepool that allows the visually impaired to safely navigate the route. This was part of a bigger project which is being run in conjunction with the Kerry branches of the National Council for the Blind (NCBI) and Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI). In December, Malcolm Noonan, Minister of State for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, visited the Blue Pool site where he witnessed the work carried out by the Mountain Meitheal group. The Pool Wood Trail has been completely resurfaced, new guide ropes and braille discs have been installed along with universal seating and picnic furniture thanks to the efforts of the volunteers. Shortly after the completion of their work Cllr Gleeson and local Council engineers visited the site to discuss the provision of a car park near the entrance to the popular trail.

Are pink elephants ruining your progress? Be honest: when you read the subject line of today's article, you thought of pink elephants, didn't you? I'll get back to brightly-coloured mammals in a second. First, let me set the scene. A new coaching client emailed me lamenting that every time she starts a diet, she suddenly gets cravings for "junk" food almost as if her body is rebelling against her for pursuing this goal. So I asked why she doesn't just eat the foods she's craving but in smaller amounts? A few days later, she reported back that as if by magic, her cravings had disappeared. This client was experiencing a concept in psychology called the "White Bear Problem" or, in our case, the "Pink Elephant Problem" (also known as Ironic Process Theory). The Pink Elephant Problem occurs when you try not to think of something, only for that thing you're trying not to think about becoming is the only thing you can think about. Just like if I told you not to think of pink elephants, well, now you're thinking of pink elephants. The Pink Elephant Problem was why the client had cravings every time she started a new diet. The more she tried to not think about all the things she couldn't eat, the more those foods occupied her thoughts. When she ate the foods she was craving, the cravings disappeared. And further, because she now knows she can eat those foods sensibly whenever she wants, she isn't thinking about them. Here's another example of this problem which involves going back to the tranquil days of 2019 when we were allowed to go out and do things. You're great on the weekdays; you're absolutely nailing your nutrition and training. Then, you get a message from your friend inviting you to a party at the weekend. Even though you don't really want to go what else are you going to do? Now you keep thinking about the upcoming party and the more you think about it, you also think about all the food and drink that's going to be there that has the potential to ruin all the effort you've been putting in all week. In response, you start to make a mental list of all the things you're not going to
do but then you get to this party and all of a sudden you're inhaling cake and wine like it's going out of fashion. Sound familiar? The problem here is framing. The more you tell yourself you're not going to do something, the more likely you are to do it. Why? Because your brain sometimes sets you up for failure. When you're under stress, the unconscious doesn't process the "not" part of the message - I will not eat cake at the party; I will not drink too much. All it recognises is the overall message, so it becomes: I will eat cake; I will drink too much. The solution to your pink elephant problem is pretty simple. Instead of thinking about what you won't do, tell yourself what you will do. Instead of "I won't have cake", try "I'm going to have one slice of cake". Instead of "I won't drink", try "I'll only have a glass or two". You get the idea. This works because it allows you to be specific and narrows your focus. Something like "I'll stick to my diet" is too broad. What does "stick to my diet" mean? But something like, "I'm going to skip appetisers and only have the main course with lots of vegetables and then some dessert" is much better because it's specific and concrete. By focusing on what you will do, you don't have to worry about what you won't do. Give this a go the next time you find yourself stressing out about things you WON’T do.

SKDP welcomes increased LEADER allocations South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) has welcomed the announcement of an increased national allocation of €70 million in 2021 and 2022 for the LEADER Programme to help give a boost to rural areas in their post-COVID recovery. SKDP is a member of the Irish Local Development Network (ILDN) who represent the 35 Local Development Companies (LDCs) that deliver the LEADER Programme nationally. "SKDP and ILDN have been calling recently for the Government to utilise funding available from the EU for Rural Development, for the purposes of LEADER," Noel Spillane, SKDP CEO said. "As the deliverers of LEADER in South
Kerry we are greatly encouraged by the announcement of an increased national allocation of €70 million to the end of 2022. The LEADER Programme offers the ideal vehicle for the delivery of development funding to rural areas in the most effective manner. The allocation of this increased funding will deliver critical stimulus to rural areas to help drive the post-COVID recovery. Furthermore, the funding announced will ensure that more vital projects in South Kerry focused on climate change, digital transformation, remote working and enterprise development can be progressed in our rural communities to meet the expectations of the EU in terms of the requirements of its Recovery funding criteria."

Trump to launch his own social media platform Former US President Donald Trump is set to launch his own social media platform in the very near future after being banned from Twtter and other social platforms including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat. The 45th US President, who was defeated in November's election by Democrat Joe Biden, is yet to make a decision whether or not
he'll run in the 2024 Presidential election. However, in the meantime a Trump spokesperson told Fox News on Sunday that Trump will be "returning to social media in probably about two or three months". It's thought that Trump is looking to build up his following ahead of running again for the role of president. "This is something that I think

After discovering his win he went to tell his fiancée Michelle at her workplace and then proceeded to go shopping to an auto dealers with his brother. But, an hour later there was no sign of the ticket anywhere! "I was stunned. I couldn't believe it," Slatten said. "I can't express it. It was something else." Slatten then retraced his steps and found the ticket on the ground in the car park of the auto parts store, near the driver's side door of another vehicle. "It's a million-dollar ticket, and someone stepped right over it," he said.

"It's going to completely redefine the game, and everybody is going to be waiting and watching to see what President Trump does, but it will be his own platform." Trump had 88 million followers on Twitter but the social media giant permanently suspended Mr Trump's account after it was said that he used it to encourage people to take part in the rally that turned into the violent storming of the US Capitol on January 6.

Drone captures mesmerising images A drone photographer captured some amazing footage moments after the Icelandic volcano - named Fagradalsfjall - erupted this week for the first time in 800 years. Bjorn Steinbekk flew his drone into the volcano, which is located near Iceland's capital Reykjavik, and captured incredi-
ble footage of the lava spilling and spitting out. And he thought he'd never again see his drone - which is worth approx. €2,000, again. “I really thought I would never see my drone again, but man, this was so thrilling to capture!!!”
Motor Industry issues urgent call to reinstate “Click & Collect” In a recent national survey conducted by Behaviour & Attitudes 75% of the people surveyed said they would be comfortable visiting car dealerships/garages when travel restrictions allowed. Car dealerships/garages were ranked first out of eight non-essential retailer categories as the most comfortable to visit. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), along with industry leaders, from retail, wholesale and vehicle distribution have re-emphasised that motor retail is ready to open, when restrictions allow. Retail in the motor industry is different from other non-essential retail. The large size of dealerships, the low average footfall, the ability to do business on a strict appointment only basis and the option of displaying cars outside lends itself to social distancing and safe retailing making car sales very low risk. From a health and safety perspective, the industry has proven during the pandemic that showrooms can operate in a low-risk environment for their employees and
customers. Car sales have been particularly challenging for the industry, over the past number of years with a declining market since 2016. The first quarter of the year creates 60% of the sales for the year. Without this period, the industry and the State will lose significant revenues. “Our industry, as essential retailers, has been open for servicing throughout most of the lockdown," Gillian Fanning, President of SIMI and Director, Serfac Ltd., said. "We have shown we can operate very safely for service and repair, ensuring the continuation of our supply chain and our vehicles are safe. The fact that people are now more reliant on private cars from a personal safety perspective, we request from the Government that we can open our sales operations from April 5, even if this is on a "Click and Collect" basis. The reopening of our sales operations is of critical importance to our industry and its related sectors. We believe that we can make a positive impact on the economy for the rest of 2021.”
From Katie Taylor to Kodaline, from Mrs Brown’s Boys to the marriage referendum, from ‘Fake News’ to Fidget Spinners, 'Reeling in the Years' showcases the stories and the soundtrack of Ireland over the last decade. Each half-hour programme features a specific year between 2010 and 2019, combining contemporary chart hits with some of the most memorable moments in news, current affairs, sport and entertainment. This is the sixth series of 'Reeling in the Years', with the years from 1962 to 2009
covered to date. The IFTA nominated show has been voted the ‘most popular home-produced TV show ever’ in an RTÉ Guide poll of Ireland’s Top 100 TV shows. "The end of a decade is a natural time to look back," Producer John O’Regan said. "We made the '90s series in 2000, the '00's series in 2010, and now we’re adding another 10 years to the collection. We’re pleased to offer viewers this latest selection of music and moments from RTÉ’s archives."
First tweet sells for $2.9m! Likened to a piece of art, an online bidder didn't bat an eyelid when they paid an eye-watering $2.9m for an online tweet this week. However, it wasn't just any old post online - it was in fact Jack Dorsey's first ever tweet on Twitter when it was in its fledgling stage in 2006. The American technology entrepreneur, philanthropist and co-founder and CEO of Twitter sold the tweet on an online platform called Valuables as a unique
digital token, known as an NFT (non-fungible token) with the proceeds going to a charity battling COVID-19 in Africa. Within minutes of the auction bids reached more than $88,000. NFT is a certification for ownership of a physical asset which means the NFT will effectively function like a rare trading card. The original post will remain online publicly on Twitter even though it has been auctioned off.

Accounting Technician MIATI Helping you understand the tax you pay How to get tax back WFH life & hacks
Ways to get tax back Mairead O'Connell is a qualified Accounting Technician working as a Bookkeeper at SwiftComply, and at present she's working remotely from home in Castleisland. She started a fully remote position for a tech company based in the Silicon Valley in California in April 2020 and was thrown into working from home like a lot of people! She had been made redundant as a result of the pandemic back in March. Needless to say, she has never met her new boss or anyone else in the company yet, only virtually! She has worked in bookkeeping and payroll for over eight years. This week she explains how to get tax back. In January 2021 approx. 420,000
PAYE taxpayers received notice of tax owed if they were in receipt of the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS) and the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) during 2020. This came as a shock to some people. However, Revenue will not be collecting this tax until 2022 to 2025. They will reduce your tax credits. If you are in receipt of PUP during 2021, you are paying tax on these payments in real time. This way you will not be hit with any tax liability this time next year! Many Irish taxpayers may not know they are entitled to claim tax back and if you owe tax there are simple ways you can use to reduce this liability. If your taxes are up to date, you can get these as a refund
directly paid to your bank account. The easiest way to claim tax back is through your medical expenses. These include GP and Consultant visits, Physio, non-routine dental care i.e. braces, IVF and all prescription medication. Also, you can get 20% back for specialised food and drink products for coeliac disease and diabetics. You can also get relief on the extra costs if you're working from home. These include heating, electricity, and broadband costs. Start storing your receipts! A lot of industries require you to purchase a uniform or tools in order to carry out your work. A flat rate expense can be claimed to cover these which you can use against your tax. The best examples are the
nursing and construction industry with particular attention to be paid to the hotel and bar trade and the hair and beauty industry as you can claim a relief to bring down any tax owed while on PUP. You can claim up to a maximum of €7,000 on third level courses. There are some restrictions, but on a payment of this amount you could get approx. €800 back. To claim any of these reliefs you will need to make sure you are registered with myAccount on Revenue.ie and for any refunds you need to have paid enough tax to cover these. You need to submit your income tax return to claim and this only takes about 10 minutes to complete. The four-year rule applies to all these reliefs, meaning you can claim back to 2017. More info and steps to do this are on my Instagram @remotebookkeeper.

Kerry Motor Club’s future events will be COVID-19 compliant Kerry Motor Clubs hopes of running future COVID-19-compliant events received a boost this week thanks to funding from Kerry County Council. The Tralee based club cannot run its Circuit of Kerry Rally in April this year and has not yet made a decision on the Kerry Winter Rally in November. Kerry Motor Club events are always well-supported by Killarney-based competitors and Killarney and District Motor Club traditionally supply a large amount of marshals for their neighbouring club’s rallies. Regardless, if Kerry Motor Club can organise an event this year or has to wait until next year, they now know they can do so in the confidence that their next rally will be COVID-19 compliant thanks to the new funding. The grant will be released to the club through the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership in conjunction with Kerry County Council and Sport Ireland, and is specifically for the purpose of purchasing COVID-19 safe-distance signs and other outdoor signage connected with the running of an event where crowds could gather.
This COVID-19 Club Small Grant Scheme, part of a programme from the Government of Ireland, implemented through Sport Ireland and its network of Local Sports Partnerships, is designed to support clubs in implementing COVID-19 related protocols. “We are very grateful to Kerry County Council and the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership for their support in this matter,” club chair PJ O’Dowd said. “We are already running rallies at a break-even point and the purchase of these signs would have put a considerable strain on our budgets. Now, once we get the green light to run events, we can do so in the confidence that we will have the correct signage in place and that we are taking steps to make sure that our events are as safe possible for everyone.”

Falvey family lead the Kerry entry on Déjà Vu 2021 road run Four members of one local motorsport family are among the many Kerry enthusiasts who have entered the classic rally event ‘Déjà Vu Ireland West’. This year’s running of the popular retro-style event will be based in Westport, County Mayo and will run on the weekend of September 17 and 18 – pandemic restrictions permitting. ‘Déjà Vu’ is a series of non-competitive motoring events, run over many of the famous special sections that have been used on the Circuit of Ireland, Donegal International Rally, the Ulster Rally, Galway International Rally, Cork 20 International Rally and The Rally of Lakes. Competitors enter in period rally cars or cars of historical importance and very often, during the runs, famous rally drivers are reunited with machines from their past careers. Déjà Vu began life in Killarney in 2016 when the event celebrated the glory days of the Circuit of Ireland between 1936 and 1983. It returned to Killarney the following year to celebrate the early years of the Rally of

the Lakes and has since remembered the Ulster International Rally and the Donegal International Rally. Over the years the event has raised nearly €175,000 for local and national charities. This year’s ‘Déjà Vu’ will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Galway International Rally by visiting famous roads in Connemara and Mayo including the Partry Hills, Lough Nafooey, Derryrush,
Roundstone and Ballynahinch Lake. Four members of the Falvey family, who appropriately live near the classic Gortnagane stage in Rathmore, have entered. Conor Falvey leads the charge in his replica Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.0 and his co-driver for the weekend is his wife Catherine. Their two sons Robert and Mark have also entered a Ford Escort Mk2. Mark is

Robert is usually found in the service park helping his brother and father, his cousin Peter and his uncle Todd but September’s run will be his first time driving in an event. The brothers will take part in Robert’s newly built Escort. The new car, a lockdown project by the Falvey family, will carry Eaton Yale livery made famous by former World Champion Hannu Mikkola. It also sports a locally famous registration plate – 314 MYI. “The car is all dressed up with nowhere to go until now,” Conor said. “The reg is well-known in these parts, Barry Duggan drove it to fifth on the 1984 Rally of the Lakes, it then went to the Randles brothers, the late Con used it to great acclaim before David took it over, they sold it to Dan Brosnan in Fenit. It eventually found its way to the Falvey family.” Killarney and District Motor Club member John Daly has entered his Ford Escort Cosworth. The Listowel man will be joined by Dan Halpin. Tralee’s Pat Slattery has restored a Subaru Impreza and will be joined by his girlfriend Sandra Dillion who will be taking part in her first motorsport event. Local Mini enthusiasts Aaron Fleming (Killarney) and Alan McGough (Beaufort) are also on the entry list.

A total of €1 million has been secured for the next phase of the Killarney to Farranfore road. The money was ringfenced at a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District where elected councillors voted unanimously to accept the Schedule of Works for the year ahead. The money, which will be put towards design work, is part of an overall programme of works along the N22 that will see road improvements from Glenflesk to Farranfore. These include an allocation of €200,000 for projects previously reported in the Killarney Advertiser like the Lewis Road junction upgrade and the realignment of the Madam’s Hill junction.

“Nothing so undermines your financial judgement as the sight of your neighbour getting rich” - JP Morgan We are all in a rush. A rush to grow up, a rush for that new promotion, a rush to get on the property ladder. Our innate fear of falling behind has led to many of us seeking shortcuts to fast-track all of life’s milestones. Nowhere is this instinctive human condition more prevalent than in personal finance. Everyone wants to get rich quick. When I speak to friends about investing, the conversation typically goes something like this. "Mike, nobody cares about your longterm investing approach; just tell me the name of the stock that will make me a millionaire by the end of next week." We are all wired to try and find the easiest route, the path of least resistance. Every day, thousands of people opt to play the national Lottery to be in with a one in 10,737,573 chance of winning it big. Not exactly favourable odds, but there are few get-rich schemes more instantaneously gratifying. Hence our never-ending

Everyone wants to get rich quick PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE

obsession with picking those six elusive numbers despite the unlikely probability. This rush to get rich quick can often result in perfectly rational individuals doing very irrational things in a bid to get ahead like forgoing tried and tested means of building wealth, and opting to take a chance on a faint promise of short-term riches instead.
Unfortunately, the boring truth is, in investing, patience is a virtue. What better way to reinforce this point than to regale you with a cautionary tale from the most successful investor of all time. Everyone knows the investing duo of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. With a combined net worth of over $100 billion, they are a force to be reckoned with. But 40 years ago, there was a third member, Rick Guerin. The three made investments together. Then Rick disappeared while Warren and Charlie became the most famous investors of all time. A few years ago, Buffett was asked, "what happened to Rick?" Buffett explained how Rick was highly leveraged and got hit with margin calls in the 1970s bear market. “Charlie and I always knew that we would become incredibly wealthy. We were not in a hurry to get wealthy; we knew it would happen. Rick was just as smart as us, but he was in a hurry." Given the level of growth and volatility in
markets over the last year, it is easy to get caught up in all the skyrocketing returns. I get it; seeing a seemingly endless list of companies double and triple in price will ensure that even the most risk-averse investor wants to get in on the action. With that said, now is not the time to abandon your rationality simply because you know a guy who knows a guy who made millions from Tesla and Bitcoin. Remember, it's not about outsmarting the market; it's about positioning yourself so you participate in the rising tides of markets. My advice is don't rush it, don't force it. While it's easy to get drawn in by the high-flying outliers and your neighbour's new Merc, staying focused on your longterm wealth goals instead of gambling the mortgage on ''the next big thing'' is the preferred approach. Just because you're not a millionaire yet doesn't mean your investment plan isn't working. Stay diversified, don't borrow to buy stocks and stay focused on the long term.
Professional indemnity insurance Professional indemnity insurance provides cover for claims against you or your company for the financial consequences of negligent acts, errors, omissions or breaches by you or your company when providing a professional service. If you advise others in your daily profession then you may be exposed to claims for breach of your professional duty of care. A wide range of professional services would require professional indemnity cover, examples include: • Accountants • Architects and interior designers • Engineers and surveyors • Design and construct professionals in the building, electrical and mechanical trades • Professionals in the training, media and technology industries • Solicitors and members of the legal profession • Estate agents and auctioneers
• Management and marketing consulting firms • Health and Safety consultants • Employment agencies and training consultancy • General service companies and consultants
HOW MUCH COVER DO I NEED? The limits of indemnity can vary from a minimum €100,000 to many millions. The limit should reflect your business needs and exposures. The policy will cover the legal costs in defending actions brought against you for any breach or failure in the course of your work that could cause financial loss to others.
HOW MUCH IS THE POLICY EXCESS?
Professional indemnity claims excesses (the amount of money payable by you in the event of a claim) can start from €500. Opting for a higher claims excess will reduce the quote so it is wise to get as many options as possible to suit your needs.
WHAT DOES A “CLAIMS MADE” POLICY MEAN?
Professional indemnity insurance covers claims that are actually made while the policy is in force, even though the error causing it may have happened years prior. It is vitally important therefore that professional indemnity policies are kept renewed and up to date. Even after a business has ceased a run off policy can be put in place for a number of years thereafter. The market for professional indemnity has been highly competitive or “soft”
John Healy of Healy Insurances.
for the last 10 years. Rates fell as insurers competed for business. As claims increased in frequency and value the market became unsustainable and therefore entered its current phase, a “hard” market. This cycle results in less capacity from the market and a significant shift as insurers increase rates and withdraw quoting for certain professions. At Healy Insurances we have access to a wide range of insurers for professional indemnity and can search the market on your behalf. Give the team a call in advance of your renewal date.

Home rebuilding costs on the rise The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) has published its updated guide to property rebuilding costs and it spells out clearly what everybody knew: rebuilding costs have seen significant increases of 7.3% on average over the past 18 months. What does this mean for homeowners? A likely increase in house insurance premiums. Rebuilding construction costs or reinstatement costs are the basis for house insurance and should they rise, the homeowner should recalculate the building's sum insured. A customer who underinsures the rebuilding cost of their home could have any future claim reduced by the same proportion. According to SCSI, rebuilding costs rose by 5% in Dublin over the past 18 months, 9% in the northwest, while elsewhere
the average increase was 6-7%. However, the cost of rebuilding remains highest in the Dublin region and lowest in the northwest. According to the figures the cost of rebuilding a three bed semi-detached home in Dublin is €218,000 compared to €140,000 for a similar home in the Northwest. The increase is being attributed to new ‘nearly zero’ energy efficient building standards as well as a rise in the cost of some materials. If you are rebuilding a house, or 25% or more of it; the ‘envelope, or surface area of the home has to be brought up to a B2 BER rating. The envelope is the total surface area of the house which leaks heat, so it includes the external walls, windows, doors, the ground floor and roof or ceiling. Replacing heat pumps, temperature control systems, heat recovery systems all add mechanical, electrical and plumbing costs
to the process. Brexit has also led to supply issues with some materials and increased the cost of a range of products as a result including insulation and timber products, steel, mesh, plasterboard and metal studs. It is very important to differentiate between the Reinstatement Value and Market Value of your home. The Reinstatement Value represents the cost of rebuilding the home in the case of loss while the Market Value is the amount the house would reasonably be expected to achieve if put on the open market for sale. When calculating the Reinstatement/ Rebuilding Value of your home factors including location, floor area, standard of finish etc., are taken into account. Should you require a valuation of your property for reinstatement purposes contact DNG Ted Healy on 064 6639000 or email killarney@dng.ie.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Getting the Leaving
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue
Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966
How to do a DIY facial massage We are all missing our monthly Sothys and CACI facials and I can't wait to be back treating all my clients again. In the meantime I recommended doing a little bit at home to stimulate the blood flow and keep your skin glowing. I know it's not the same as a salon treatment but it will help. It relaxes the wrinkles, increases micro-circulation which boosts skin healing, repairs and rejuvenates. Massage can help tone the muscles by lifting the skin. It will stimulate the collagen production which in turn plumps out the wrinkles, firms and tightens the skin. We all know that toxins can build up and become puffy in the glands under the skin. Massage can greatly reduce fluid build-up, acne, and inflammation from wearing masks for long periods of time. It also greatly improves the absorption of serums to get the full benefits from the active ingredients. All the tension I didn’t know I had around my eyes, temples, forehead, jawline and neck have melted. I was shocked by how different I felt. I was calmer, found myself breathing deeper and when I looked in the mirror my face was refreshed like I had just wok-
en up from taking a nap! You can perform facial massage at home for similar results. Daily facial massage could be your key to preventative wrinkle care and the natural answer to achieving more youthful skin as we age. Before you start your five-minute massage at home prepare your skin by cleansing and toning with your favourite Sothys skincare products. I recommend using a facial oil such as Sothys Nutritive Essential Lipid Elixir, a fantastic facial massage oil. It's like a reset for the skin. A smooth oil-based serum encourages the production of ceramides to protect the skin from dehydration. It's full of Omega 3, 6 and 9 and a biomimetic complex relishes the intercellular cement between the cells. To do this at home simply start at the collar bone and rub up to the jawline. Repeat this on the entire neck area, always working upwards and outwards towards the ears. Then start at the centre of chin with both hands rubbing out towards the ears, repeating each movement 10 times slowly. Rub up towards the cheeks and outwards to the top of the ears. Work around the eyes in a figure of eight movement, up between the eyebrows and move outwards over the forehead.
• For any advice on skincare call Jill on 064 6632966.
Cert balance right
It has been a difficult couple of weeks for Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied students as you grappled with making decisions about accredited grades and exams. Regardless of what choices you have made, the important thing now is to plan out your time between this and the written exams so that you can pace yourself properly. Make sure you are clear on all the deadlines and key dates and try to stay as focused as you can on the end goal – to get through the Leaving Cert and beyond it to brighter times for everyone. This week brought announcements on further changes to be made to written exam papers to give more choice to candidates. The full document can be found on www.examinations.ie. Make sure you take time over the Easter holidays to check the detail of the changes for your particular subjects so that you can use your time more effectively and efficiently in the run up to the exams. Many of you are facing into oral exams and music practicals over the Easter holidays, and while they are being conducted under different circumstances this year give them your very best shot as they are a great way of picking up marks that will boost your grade when added to the written paper. Orals for Leaving Cert Applied students will take place from May 3 to 12, the practical performance test will take place from May 17 to 21, and interviews for LCA practical coursework will begin on June 8.
USE A THREE STEP APPROACH
To help you to plan out your use of time and to make sure you can pace yourself over the coming months I recommend a three stage plan as follows: 1) Put together a calendar for yourself between here and the end of the exams and mark in all the important dates that are relevant to you and the subjects you are doing. This will help you to feel organised and stay focused on the priorities on a weekly basis. A list of revised completion dates for coursework (including projects) has been issued by the State Exams Commission and is available on www.examinations.ie, as well as the timetable for the written exams which will run from June 9 to 29. take place on Saturday May 8 and the Computer Science exam will take place on Saturday May 22. 2) Do out a weekly timetable at the beginning of each week including the important dates and deadlines for you that week, list your tasks that are a priority including written assignments and/or revision and don’t forget to include well-being activities such as fresh air and exercise as well as a productivity reward for yourself at the end of the week! 3) For the Easter holidays and weekends up to the exams do out a daily revision plan including your time slots for study, tasks you need to complete, topics you need to cover, and don’t forget your well-being breaks and activity! It has been a stressful year so far, so use the time over the Easter holidays to recharge the batteries. It is also a great time to do further research into the course and career options you are considering for after the Leaving Cert. There is still plenty of time to look at college courses, post-Leaving Cert courses, apprenticeships and traineeships. Try to strike a balance between rest, relaxation and revision so that you can pace yourself in the final term to work well up to and including assessments for accredited grades and the written papers. All your effort will be worth it in the end!

Cronin eyes up Irish titles after impressive TKO win in Luxembourg Kerry light heavyweight boxer Kevin Cronin has set his sights on national glory after his fourth round TKO victory over Boris Mrkonjic in Luxembourg. The Milltown native was hoping to get six rounds under his belt against the Bosnian on Saturday but his opponent could only manage three before crying off with an apparent shoulder injury before the start of the fourth. It was another comprehensive win for the Kingdom Warrior and speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, he said he was happy with his display. “I thought I performed very, very well. Firstly, judging myself, I know I can perform a lot better, but I also proved to a lot of people the level that I am at. The reaction that I’m getting to the fight and how I boxed is unbelievable. Irish-Boxing.com
KNOCK-OUT: Kerry's Kevin Cronin made light work of Bosnian Boris Mrkonjic when the pair met in the ring last weekend.
have mentioned that I’m ready for the step-up to big fights at 3-0, so obviously I’ve done something right. But I have a lot more gears to go through.” Mrkonjic came out swinging, which came as a surprise to Cronin, but the Kerryman showed good composure to take control of the bout. “I expected him to start off a bit cooler and then get behind his boxing and try to take me out. But he really came out of the traps – he was looking to knock me out from the get-go. I knew he was going to be a big fella but I didn't expect him to be that solid. He was a huge light heavyweight. “The gameplan worked out perfectly. I stayed out of the danger zone and I showed that I’m not just a puncher, I’m a boxer. He was coming to take my head
off and I kept him at range. I stood out when I needed to stand out. The main part of the gameplan was to keep a busy jab, and I did that, and to keep picking them jabs to the body, and I did that as well. It started taking a toll on him and it was setting up the bigger shots at the end of the second round. In the third round then when I started applying the pressure, the tank was starting to run empty just from them little jabs to the mid-section. “I didn’t expect to take him out ‘til later to be honest. I was hoping for the full six rounds and I thought he’d bring me there because he’s a tough fella. I thought he would drag me to the fifth or sixth round before I’d find an opening. But the gameplan went so well, I got the opening a bit earlier and got him down in the third.
“He was complaining about a shoulder injury but, to be honest with you, watching back the footage, there was nowhere where he actually got injured. I think he was just looking for a way out at that stage.” Cronin’s is expecting another foreign fight in June, but he remains optimistic of a home event, possibly in Killarney, in the medium term. “The fight I want is not a certain person,” he said. “I want to fight for the main titles in Ireland, which are the Celtic and Irish titles. I want to do the traditional route, and I want to go on to the European after that. So, whoever is holding those titles, I’m coming for them. “And if Taylor McGoldrick wants it in the meantime, he can have it.”

Keane prepared for League of Ireland test Ahead of Treaty United’s First Division opener on Sunday, former Killarney Celtic midfielder Matt Keane speaks to Adam Moynihan about graduating to the League of Ireland
in-house matches between ourselves, and I can feel myself coming on massively just from playing with better players. I’m slowly but surely adjusting to it.
Matt, congratulations on signing for Treaty United. You must be thrilled to be making the step-up to the League of Ireland. Ah yeah, I’m absolutely delighted to be honest with you. The way things are going, even to be back out kicking ball is great – it looks like junior soccer might not be back until September. It’s great to be back playing, especially at this level. That makes it even better.
What are the goals for the season, both personally and as a team? Personally, I’ll be trying to break into the matchday 18 first. There’s a big squad – there’s 26 of us – and as I said a lot of them have experience at this level. Then, as the season goes on and as I improve, I’ll hopefully try to get a chance in the starting 11 or coming of the bench, try to make an impact and cement myself in the team. But I know it will be tough. I’m not under any illusions. I’m delighted to just be up there at the moment. From the team’s perspective, it’s our first year. The manager isn’t really setting any goals for us because we don’t really know where we’re going to be at. I suppose we’ll try to be competitive at the start. We’ve played Waterford pre-season, who are a Premier Division side, and we drew 1-1. We also played Athlone twice and we drew with them and then beat them 2-1 at the weekend. So, look, we shouldn’t be too far off it.
When did you find out that Treaty were interested in you? Tommy Barrett, who is the manager, was also manager when I was with the Limerick U19s. He gave me a ring when he found out Treaty might be getting a licence for the year [to enter the League of Ireland]. He asked if I’d be interested in joining; he said he heard I was playing good ball. I jumped at the chance. I was delighted to be going in playing League of Ireland football. Was there a trial or did you fall straight in? We did a trial for a week. I think there was over 50 there the first night. But he would have known a lot of us from before. Has it been a dream of yours to play at a higher level? Definitely. 100%. I left the Limerick U19s because I was in college in Cork and I was living in Kerry so it was kind of tough to be
everywhere. I always had the ambition to try and get back up at some stage again, and to try and play League of Ireland. I was lucky to be at Celtic where there were high standards, and I really wanted to get up to the next level and test myself against the best in the country. How proud a moment was it to put pen to paper with Treaty? It was great. The hard work starts after you put the pen to paper but I was absolutely delighted, I have to say. How have you found the standard so far? Yeah, it has been tough, especially after the long layoff. A lot of the players have been playing League of the Ireland – some of them have four or five years’ experience – whereas I was playing in the Kerry District League for four years. So it was tough going at the start, but I’m kind of adjusting to it now. We’ve had three pre-season games and a couple of
Will it be strange playing for another team besides Celtic? Yeah, it will be tough alright. That’s the only downside of coming up to play League of Ireland, really: leaving Celtic behind. I have so many good memories with Celtic. The club were so good to me, especially Brian Spillane. He was top class. I have to be very thankful to Celtic.
Do you think the fact that Celtic have been so successful in competitions like the FAI Junior Cup was important in you getting signed? 100%. The manager even said that to me, he knows Celtic are one of the top junior sides in the country and he had been following us. When I left the Limerick U19s and came back down, it would have been easy to fall back into the GAA because the standard of soccer is maybe not that high. But Spillane brought massive professionalism to Celtic. That was one of the reasons I played soccer again, because the training was so good and so hard. What’s the schedule like at the moment with Treaty? It’s fairly mental at the moment, I won’t lie! It’s four nights a week now but once the season starts, it will be two nights training a week and a match at the weekend. It has been tough the last few weeks because I’ve gone from doing nothing to doing everything. And the first match of the season is on Sunday? Yeah, we’re away to Bray. It will be a very tough game. They’ll be expecting to push for promotion. But we’re all rearing to go and we think we can put it right up to them. Great stuff. Congrats again, Matt. Well-deserved. All the best for the season. Nice one, Adam. Thanks for that.

Never forget the Ball Alley Lane Pipe Band
HISTORY: The Ball Alley Lane Fife and Drum band. Photo taken circa the 1920s. Photo courtesy of Eddie O'Brien.
In Part 2 of his feature piece on handball, Eamonn Fitzgerald traces the history of the sport in Killarney In last week’s column we highlighted the locations of three handball alleys in Killarney, all now silent, where once they were a hive of activity. But we were also delighted to commend Spa GAA for making great use of their fine clubhouse by incorporating provisions for handball. On Monday last I spoke with Tadhg O’Sullivan, chairman of Spa Handball Club, and asked him about their facilities. “We are fortunate to have two one-wall handball courts set up in the large clubhouse,” he said. “Mike Casey and others did a great job for us. These two courts are 20x16 and the-one wall courts are the most popular sizes all over the world where handball is played, in countries such as America, Canada, and Australia.
At present all of our players are adults, but when lockdown is over we’ll be developing handball in the national schools and have scheduled Mondays and Fridays, 7-9pm for juveniles to come along.” And you loved to play the game yourself Tadhg, when you were a student in De Le Salle College, Waterford… “Yes, it was very popular with us in De La Salle and I still look forward to playing in Spa. It’s a great pastime and great to get fit. I might add that the handball is open to anyone and it caters for males and females. Everyone will be welcome to come along when the government gives sport the go-ahead to open, and you do not need to be a member of Spa GAA club.”
Anyone interested may contact Tadhg on 087 2890522.
GREATS
Last week I mentioned some of the great handball players in the Old Mon and in the Sem, which resonated with Gerry Florrie O’Donoghue from Park Road. Gerry, who now resides in Toronto, read the article online and it reminded him of the great duels he had with the late Noelie O’Brien, New Road. It all started for Killarney handball in Ball Alley Lane. Where is it? For those who may not know, Bally Alley Lane is in Upper High Street, currently the premises of Killarney Carpet and Furniture Centre, down the lane beside Sheehan’s sweet shop and less than 100 metres from the Killar-
ney Advertiser premises. The carpet centre uses its huge space, which was built to accommodate 300 spectators. I am delighted to see Killarney Town Council did not forget this historic lane when erecting signage throughout the streets, roads and housing estates of our town. Gone are the awful days of cheap plastic signage and in its place is classy work. Handball started in Killarney in Ball Alley Lane in the last century and there are accounts of great crowds of young people gathering there waiting for a game. The premises is still there and I spoke to Andy O’Sullivan, proprietor of Killarney Carpet and Furniture Centre. Genial Andy, who has given great service both to Spa GAA and to the East Kerry Board,
59
26.3.2021 said, “I bought the Ball Alley from Jackie Daly (father of Billy from SuperValu) in 1977 and it was also owned by his brother-in-law for a short time. It was, and still is, a wonderful premises, affording us plenty of space for our business. The Lynes also had it as a garage. That would be the family of the great All-Ireland football star, Tadhgie Lyne.”
KILLARNEY
Some of the Killarney people who played regularly in Ball Alley Lane included John Langford, J Doona, Con O’Shea. Michael Coffey, O’Brien, Jim Foley, and P and Jem Hurley. Historian Canon Tom Looney unearthed a report of a Dr Crokes meeting of 1898, the club then just 12 years old. “Lovers of the game who have visited Killarney Ball Court will be glad to learn that the old sport is once again started for the season of 1898 supported by the following fans: J Willis, Sullivan, M Reidy, J Fleming, P Mahony, J O’Brien, P Whiston, P Teahan, J Foley, John Brien and O’Sullivan, JR Styles and RT Stokes.” That list is not exhaustive and many of their descendants still live in Killarney. One man I spoke to quite often about handball was Reddie O’Connor. He played a lot of tennis and handball in his youth and had happy memories of Ball Alley Lane. He also told me that the great Fr Tom Jones played there, as did teams from Tralee, Kanturk, Valentia and Ballymacelligott. He also said there were Munster finals played there. The late Donie Corkery never forgot the Ball Alley and their famous pipe band. Every year he made sure he attended the Dr Crokes AGM. He ignored standing orders and had his one-liner minuted. “Never forget the Ball Alley Lane Pipe Band”. They didn’t have the fancy equipment of St Mary’s Brass and Reed band, who did their practicing across the street from them in the garage premises now used by Donie Mackey, but they could strike up a foot-tapping marching tune according to Donie.
RUBBERS FOR MONEY
Playing rubbers were very common at that time, usually for money. Small money in some cases, such as the old tanner. There are reports, too, of some very big stakes. John Fitzgerald of Tralee and often a partner of Jones in doubles issued a challenge in May 1895 to American champion John Lawlor to play him for a stake of £50, but he funked it and knew that Fitzgerald or Jones could well down the world champion, especially if Tom Jones was playing. No, not the singer, but Fr Tom Jones, who has alleys named after him in Maynooth, Glenbeigh and Tralee ( Scoil Mhic Easmuinn). It is a well-known fact that the money Tom Jones earned from handball challenges paid for his studies through those six or seven years in Maynooth. And I’m sure he had plenty loose change. That begs the question of amateur status of handball as part of the GAA. Jones

was the Irish senior champion in 1888 and again in 1889.
GREATEST OF ALL TIME
Soccer aficionados know of John Delaney ex-FAI, but there was another man of the same name who was a great handballer from Athy. Frank Taaffe, writing in the Kildare edition of the Nationalist Newpaper recalled: “John Delaney of Athy was regarded as the man most likely to succeed Lawlor for the Irish title. The games were played in Athy and in Tralee between Delaney and a young man named Tom Jones. In the first round played in Athy handball court Delaney won eight of the ten games played and needed just three more games to win the All-Ireland title. It was not to be as Jones in the return match in Tralee won the first nine games and with them the rubber and the Championship. Tom Jones, who shortly afterwards became a Catholic priest, is regarded as possibly the greatest handballer of all time.” Great praise indeed from a rival report. Yes, Fr Tom Jones, the handballing priest was so good that he was never beaten. He answered the call of the Lord. Otherwise, he would certainly have won many more Irish and world titles. Fellow Tralee man John Fitzgerald (born in 1870) was another outstanding player. Himself and Jones played and trained
together regularly. In 1889, Jones and Fitzgerald won the double-handed Munster Championship. In 1897 Fitzgerald won the World Championship by beating John Lawlor. Fr Jones returned to several parishes in the Kerry diocese and in 1946 started the Glenbeigh Handball Club. He set about building a three-wall open alley beside the church, where he played and trained the youth of the parish. In his later years in Glenbeigh he still played handball and at that time the train travelled to Glenbeigh. Many a cocky Corkonian came on day trips to Rossbeigh, noticing the near-80-yearold-man in a soutane in the Glenbeigh alley. He took them on and always won the money. Little wonder that when he died he had a fine house in 13 Rock Street, Tralee.
ROUNDY AND MURTY
Other great Kerry handball players I remember were the McEllistrim brothers Roundy and Murty from Ballymacelligot - both of them worthy All-Ireland champions and ranked among the finest exponents of the game. Roundy was the complete stylist and possessed every shot in the book. He stands alone in handball history as the only man ever to win four Junior All-Irelands in the same year. Roundy and Murty also won several All-Ireland senior titles. Murty may not have had Roundy's range of shots
but his agility on the court, allied to his never-say-die spirit, made him a very difficult opponent to beat. Another great player from Tralee was Eamonn Horan, an All-Ireland champion and later a sports journalist with The Kerryman newspaper. Paddy Downey, also from Tralee, won 17 senior All-Ireland titles. He is the only Kerry man to win the 60×30 Senior Singles title, doing it twice. Nicholas Kerins was also a great player a who had titanic battles with the mighty Joey Maher. The best current player I have seen is Dominick Lynch of Glenbeigh. He has a stack of All-Irelands. He was only 16 years old when he won his first All-Ireland title in 1993 and followed up in 1994 winning the World Underage title. He is still winning, now in his mid-40s, playing successfully in the Masters circuit.
SPA HANDBALL
We wish Spa the best of luck building up their handball club and, who knows, in years to come a young man or woman might lift the All-Ireland handball title, following in the footsteps of Spa’s All-Ireland football winners Donie O’Sullivan, Paudie O’Mahony and Mick Gleeson. Fr Kieran is continuing the Tralee Rockies tradition as an active playing member of the Spa Handball Club.

McMahon named minor of the year Kerry minor Cian McMahon has been selected as the Munster Minor Footballer of the Year following his excellent performances in green and gold in 2020. The sharpshooting Dr Crokes forward was one of The Kingdom’s key players throughout their Munster Championship campaign, which culminated with a 10-point victory over Clare in the final. McMahon scored 1-2 in that decider and he was also integral to the hard-fought semi-final win over Cork; he scored 0-7, including some crucial points down the
stretch. Sadly for McMahon and his teammates, the All-Ireland series was subsequently suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Annascaul’s Killian Falvey has been named Munster U20 Footballer of the Year following his role in Kerry’s successful provincial run. At senior level, Tipperary’s achievement in capturing their first Munster Senior Football title in 85 years is recognised in the selection of All-Star Conor Sweeney as the Footballer of the Year. Soccer girls to show their skills PODIUM: Paul Nagle and Craig Breen after finishing second in Rally Estonia last year. All World Rally Championship events are run under strict COVID-19 protocols.
Paul Nagle and Craig Breen confirmed for Rally Croatia | By Sean Moriarty Paul Nagle and Craig Breen will contest next month’s Rally Croatia - the third round of the World Rally Championship – with Hyundai Motorsport. Breen and Nagle are sharing a third car with Spaniard Dani Sordo for the 2021 season with confirmation of the rota happening on an event-by-event basis. The Irish crew learned on Tuesday this week that they will join teammates Ott Tänak /Martin Järveoja and Thierry Neuville / Martijn Wydaeghe in the three-car lineup for the new for 2021 rally. While Breen and Nagle are the most-recent (2019) Irish Tarmac Rally Champions, this will be the first time that they will drive a Hyundai i20 World Rally Car on tarmac as all previous outings have
been on snow or gravel. However, on their last two World Rally Championship events they have finished fourth (Artic Rally Finland) and second (Rally Estonia 2020). Breen’s last WRC event on tarmac was Rally Spain in 2018 while Nagle’s last tarmac outing at this level was in Corsica (alongside Kris Meeke) the same year. “So happy to be back with Hyundai Motorsport for Croatia Rally in just under a month’s time,” said Breen. “Those that know me know just how much I love the buzz of driving a World Rally Car on tarmac, and I really can’t wait for it. It’s been nearly three years since my last full tarmac event in a WRC car, but I really can’t wait to get going.” Rally Croatia runs from April 22-25 and is based in the city of Zagreb in the northwest of the country. Stages will run close to the Slovenian border.
