PAGE SIX Strict New Airbnb Ban Could Help Solve Rent Crisis Words: Adam Moynihan

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy

Killarney area available for rent. Meanwhile, there are over 300 Killarney properties listed on Airbnb. Many landlords currently favour short-term lettings as they are proving to be far more profitable than long-term lettings. As previously reported in the Killarney Advertiser, the lack of appropriate rental opportunities in Killarney is having a significant effect on both residents and businesses alike. Many companies are struggling to attract staff to the town as prospective employees are simply unable to find accommodation. The new laws will stipulate that only the principal residence or family home can be rented on a short-term basis. Where a home or apartment is a person’s principal private residence, they

will be permitted to rent out a room, or rooms, within their home for shortterm letting without restriction (e.g. B&B-type use). However, they will only be allowed to sub-let their entire house without planning permission on the short-term market for an altogether period of 90 days or less annually, and they can only rent out their homes for 14 days or less at a time. Outside of the family home, only properties with permission to operate as a tourist or short-term let could be used for this purpose. “Planning permission for a change of use to short-term let can be sought and it will be up to each local planning authority to grant permissions, based on

New laws effectively banning landlords from renting properties on a short-term basis in areas of high housing demand will be introduced from June 2019, it has been confirmed. Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy unveiled plans for the new restrictions yesterday and it is hoped that the move will help to solve Ireland’s crippling housing crisis. Many people across the country are struggling to find suitable rented accommodation at a reasonable price. The growing number of houses being used as Airbnb properties has been cited as a major factor in the ongoing issue. Currently, popular Irish property site daft.ie has just 12 properties in the

Incident At Killarney Post Office Appears On Crimecall Viewers from Killarney were left gobsmacked on Monday night when their local post office made an appearance on RTÉ’s Crimecall. The incident in question related to CCTV footage of a female customer unknowingly dropping an envelope as she exited the premises. The envelope contained a substantial amount of cash. Another female in a brightly coloured shawl, who appears to be in the queuing area of the post office, can be seen picking up the envelope. She proceeds to exit the store, ostensibly to follow the woman and return the money. The envelope, however, never made it back to its rightful owner. The Crimecall team appealed to anyone with information or who may recognise the woman to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 66 31222.

guidance that will issue from the Department of Housing,” Mr Murphy said. “In areas of high housing demand and, taking into account other relevant factors such as cumulative impacts, it is unlikely that permission would be granted.”

Keoghan:

I Was Touched By Ian’s Words

Noel Grimes (Killarney Deer Society), Master Tree Carver Will Fogarty (Fear na Coillte) and Mayor John Sheahan unveil the new sculpture. Words: Adam Moynihan Celebrated young Irish actor Barry Keoghan has spoken of his admiration for brave Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell, saying he was “touched” by the local hero’s inspirational words. The pair met at Cinema Killarney the world premiere of Tradition, a film shot entirely in Killarney by talented director Damien O’Callaghan. Keoghan gladly posed for a snap with Ian and later shared the image with his 52,000 followers on Instagram. “I got to meet a man who I watched on the Late Late and was touched by his words,” the caption read. “He has the best attitude in life. I got to chat with him for a couple of minutes and the positivity that man has is inspirational. All the love, brother.” Ian appeared on The Late Late Show in May and his inspirational motto, “If I can’s stand up, I’ll stand out,” moved viewers the length and breadth of the country. The Pinewood native also bravely spoke about the cycling accident that left him paralysed from the shoulders down and his ongoing recovery. Keoghan is originally from Dublin but he frequently spends time in Killarney with girlfriend Shona Guerin, who hails from Beaufort. He is fast becoming one of Ireland’s most coveted movie stars following roles in Love/Hate, Trespass Against Us and Dunkirk. Earlier this year he was named Best Supporting Actor at the Irish Film and Television Awards for his role in The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Keoghan isn’t the first celebrity to speak of their respect for Ian O’Connell. The Killarney man’s remarkable tale of bravery in the face of great adversity also attracted the attention of MMA superstar Conor McGregor, who met Ian at a UFC even in May. Conor and Ian have since struck up a friendship.

Staggering Sculpture Unveiled And Lit Up A wonderfully creative sculpture of a red stag leaping into the air has been officially unveiled at the busy Port Road-New Road junction. Talented tree sculptor Will Fogarty from Ballyhoura, Co. Limerick was commissioned to create the piece. The sculpture has already won the hearts of locals, many of whom have been left in awe at the attention to detail and level of skill required to carry out such a task. The feat is made all the more remarkable when one considers that the sculpture was carved entirely from an existing tree which had been dying for the past decade or so. The rotting Spanish chestnut tree had Phytophthora ink disease and the council decided to have it removed. Town Engineer John Ahern intervened, however, and suggested making it into a sculpture. As our pictures show, the stag is now illuminated at night by purple lighting. The Killarney Native Red Stag is the largest and the only native species to Ireland, believed to have had a continuous presence in Killarney since the end of the last Ice Age.

No Additional Winter Beds For UHK Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry and Spokesperson on Primary Care and Community Heath John Brassil has said that despite all of the spin from Fine Gael, no additional bed capacity will be brought on stream this winter to alleviate the overcrowding at University Hospital Kerry. Deputy Brassil was commenting after receiving a number of parliamentary replies from the Minister for Health and the HSE this week and comparing them to similar replies from during the summer. “Despite all the huffing and puffing, it’s now abundantly clear that neither the HSE

nor the Government have any plans to increase capacity at UHK this winter despite there being consistent overcrowding at the hospital. “Today, Wednesday 24th, there are 22 people lying on trolleys in UHK, and to date this year, 558 over 75 year olds spent more than 24 hours lying on trolleys in the hospital. “I am very worried about patient safety this winter at University Hospital Kerry. To learn that there are no plans for additional capacity despite a commitment in the Government’s capital plan for 33 new beds for UHK is very concerning.”

TOWNTALK €250k Lotto Winners Claim Their Prize

Killarney’s mystery lotto winners have stepped forward to accept their prize but the lucky pair have decided to remain anonymous, officials have confirmed. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser a fortnight ago, owner of Eagers Newsagents Pat Duggan revealed that a winning Lotto Plus ticket worth a whopping €250,000 had been sold at his store on High Street. Pat was hopeful that a local had bought the ticket and he got his wish as a lottery spokesperson says that a Killarney couple were the lucky winners. The winners have said that they will use the money to pay off their mortgage. This was the first big lottery win at the popular newsagents and Pat says he is hopeful of more in the future.

Killarney Remembers The Late Eileen Dero

V

The town of Killarney was saddened this past week following the death of popular local businesswoman Eileen Dero O’Sullivan Quille. Eileen was a familiar face to locals owing to her prominent role in the family business, Dero’s of Main Street. Dero’s has been successful coach and taxi operator since opening in 1949, bringing countless locals and tourists around the Ring of Kerry and on day trips to various other landmarks around the county. The beloved wife of Michael and mother of Michael and Catherine, she was predeceased by her husband and her son Denis. She is further survived by her son-in-law Denis, daughter-in-law Kate, grandchildren Kate, Connor, Genevieve and Devlin, sisters Bridie, Kathleen and Nora, step-daughters, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, other relatives and a great many friends. The family has asked for donations in lieu of flowers to be made to the National Council for the Blind.

Some of the attendees at the 10th Annual Afternoon Tea hosted by Killarney Rotary Club.

Rotary Club Raises Funds For SouthWest Counselling The 10th Annual Afternoon Tea hosted by Killarney Rotary Club was held last Saturday at the Great Southern Killarney. It was once again a sell-out well in advance. This year’s beneficiaries are SouthWest Counselling Centre. CEO of the centre Jimmy Mulligan addressed the guests and explained the need for constant fundraising and involvement in events such as this to provide the affordable service that they have given in Killarney since 1994. He briefly spoke about the various types of counselling available locally and at their outreach centres in Killorglin and Kenmare, and also through their workshops run in Kerry schools. He stressed that money raised locally is spent locally and thanked everybody for attending and supporting the cause. Killarney Rotary Club were delighted to host it once again at Great Southern Killarney where they also hold their weekly club meetings. The food was top class and a pianist entertained guests on arrival and during the champagne reception in the foyer. After this Afternoon tea was served in The Garden Restaurant. There was a fashion show where up to date styles were shown by multi award winning designer Clodagh Irwin Owens, Scarlett Boutique (Scotts St), Brian de Staic Jewellery (Killarney & Dingle) and Lynes Childrenswear (High St). Afterwards, Lillie Foley from Killarney sang and wowed everyone with her amazing voice. The sound equipment was provided by Mike Neeson and Rossa Foley was DJ for the event. The event was recorded by photographer David Rolt who offered his services for the day. Everyone involved gave their time and services for free so all proceeds will go to the chosen charity. So many businesses donated prizes for the raffle and everybody who won prizes was very happy to be bringing something home and others got ideas for Christmas presents from the vast array of prizes on offer. The Club are most grateful to all who donated. Killarney Rotary Club President 20182019 The Ven. Simon Lumby thanked everyone for attending and supporting this event, which is now in its 10th year. He thanked main organiser of the Afternoon Tea event, Rotarian Ciara Irwin-Foley, for co-ordinating this event for the past 10 years since she was Club President. The next Rotary event is the Wine & Art Evening which is on Thursday, November 29 in Great Southern Killarney. Tickets are now going on sale locally.

Murder Trial:

26.10.18

The “speaking ill of the dead” strategy Words: Anne Lucey

Rattoo farmer Michael Ferris at the Central Criminal Court.

It was going to be “all duck or no dinner,” the wily Cork solicitor Frank Buttimer remarked privately as the jury went out to deliberate at the end of the trial of dairy farmer Michael Ferris for the murder of a neighbouring tillage farmer in Rattoo. The duck comment disturbed a colleague on the press bench who has pet ducks and is a vegetarian. One of her ducks is called Gertrude. Why this is memorable, I don’t know but during an awful trial it was nice to hear about Gertrude the Duck, who seemed straight out of a children’s Beatrix Potter Tale. In the adult world of the court room, a tougher fiction was at work and the phrase, which apparently stems from the Anglo-Irish fondness for duck shooting, was entirely apt: to pull off a manslaughter verdict in a case in which the accused had admitted to the gardaí he set out with nothing good on his mind when he blocked the road and then got up on this teleporter to drive the prongs through the stalled car of Anthony O’Mahony, would be “all duck”. That the defence managed to bag a manslaughter verdict was a huge feat of persuasion. The difference is, of course, that murder would see 63-year-old Ferris in jail for the rest of his life, and manslaughter will see him out in six or seven years, perhaps. Whether he will be driving teleporters again remains to be seen. There are no longer crow bangers in Rattoo, the trial was told. But it was another phrase which stuck in my mind during what was a gruesome trial: “speaking ill of the dead”. To bring home the duck, defence counsel Brendan Grehan, regarded as the best in the country, stuck to character assassination in his own words to the jury. “We do not normally speak ill of the dead,” he said. But it was necessary to show why Ferris did what he did, was the argument. For me, the relentless attack by both prosecution and defence witnesses on the man who had died so gruesomely on his way to his wheat fields was deeply disturbing. Minor incidents were dragged up. A shot he fired 30 years ago at members of the Ballyduff gun club going through his wheat in Rattoo was marched into court, and gruff remarks to a Swiss man with a holiday home. He was odd, he was difficult, etc. etc. There was little or nothing about his ingenuity in crop growing, nothing about the agreement with the OPW which has allowed Rattoo Tower to be fenced off and nothing about the awful crow problem in Rattoo which perhaps led to the overuse of the crow banger at certain periods. Not speaking ill of the dead is an ancient proscription. It goes way back to classical Greece. But speaking ill of the dead is a strategy that is increasingly used in modern Ireland these days: the victim brings about his own demise, is really what is being established. It is an awful vista and I think we cross the Rubicon with it. It was the first time too the defence of “cumulative provocation” had been used in such a trial, outside, say, domestic violence incidents. The fear in the public mind now is that anyone regarded as different, or odd or even a loner, or saying odd and annoying things over the years, could be seen to bring it upon themselves to be a target. The repercussions of this trial and of the 10:2 verdict - not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter - of this Kerry jury will be “chewed over” for years, and legions of lawyers will dine out on it!

Johnny Hickey, Killarney and District Motor Club PRO, presents a Special Appreciation Award to Diarmuid Cronin, K&DMC Chairman.

Killarney and District Motor Club played host to the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship Award Dinner at the Gleneagle Hotel last Saturday night. Each year this prestigious event is rotated between the participating clubs and this year was a special year for both the Killarney & District Motor Club and the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship as they both celebrated their 40th anniversary. To coincide with honouring the 2018 championship winners, past winners were also honoured. This was a momentous gathering of motorsport greats for whom countless rally fans lined the ditches of Ireland for so many years, providing spectacular memories by demonstrating heroic skills in legendary cars in pursuit of that ultimate prize. The Killarney & District Motor Club pulled out all the stops for this celebration of Irish rallying with the Gleneagle Ballroom filled with such tarmac titans as Austin McHale, Billy Coleman, Kenny McKinstry, Andrew Nesbitt, John Coyne, Tim McNulty and the young guns Gareth McHale, Keith Cronin, Robert Barrable, and brothers Sam and Josh Moffett were all in attendance and interviewed throughout the night by Martin Walsh of the Examiner. Ireland’s most successful WRC competitor, five-time WRC rally winner and Killarney native Paul Nagle was in attendance, comparing notes with fellow competitors. Phil Collins from Great Britain received a special award for his continuous support to Irish Rallying and his endless enthusiasm to compete here in Ireland. He spoke of his

first time competing in the Killarney International Rally of the Lakes and collecting his prize in the same venue 38 years previous, a venue synonymous with Irish rallying. He also went on to thank Mike and Noreen Marshall for persuading him to compete in Killarney all those years ago and as testimony to the high standard of the event, he became a constant on the entry list. John Naylor, President of Motorsport Ireland, also spoke highly of the K&DMC contribution to the sport and to Dermot Healy and his team for hosting an excellent event. Gerard Quinn of Ford Performance was also on hand to perform prizegiving duties. Frank O’Mahony, Chairman of the TROA, spoke very highly of the K&DMC’s contribution to the championship and particularly Dermot Healy and his team for representing both organisations so well in a very well-hosted event. It truly was a fantastic social night of rally festivity, talk and chat. The setting was all that of a World Rally event. Killarney & District Motor Club presented a special Recognition Award and Honorary Membership to the four founding members of the K&DMC, all of whom are still members today. Fintan Foley (Blennerville), Michael Buckley (Faha) and Mike and Noreen Marshall (Killarney) were recognised for their dedicated service to the club over the past 40 years. The club also presented a Special Appreciation Award to Diarmuid Cronin, K&DMC Chairman, for his ongoing commitment and dedicated service as club chairman over the past 10 years.

Deadline Closes For Submissions On Pretty Polly Site Words: Anne Lucey

The deadline closes today, Friday, for proposals for the development of the 7.4-acre Pretty Polly site. Dublin based BNP Paribas real estate agents are handling the submissions, and they say there have been quite a few. The old factory and land was given in trust to the town council in 2009, which is now, of course, under the control of Kerry County Council. The local authorities have sat on it since. In stark contrast to the Island of Geese site in Tralee where it was all hands on deck from the get go in the three or four years since it was handed over. The old bacon factory on the Tralee site has already been taken demolished. Contrast this with the lack of action in the Killarney factory. At least now, however, with the council’s decision to

The Brehon • K invite “expressions of interest” from community as well as commercial organisations for the site, which will remain in council ownership, we will get proposals.

Your Town Needs You Speaking of new councils, who will run in the new area which will stretch from Rockfield to Rathmore and from Muckross to the Clydagh valley? Castleisland and Scartaglin have been taken out, and Kilgarvan remains outside the Killarney area. We badly need Killarney people on the new council and we badly need more local meetings in the town hall but, apart from the sitting councillors, who new can we expect to see? The smaller area should mean a new more energetic council more concentrated on Killarney and its unique needs. I can think of two former councillors, both of them female, whom I would dearly like to see on the bal-

It’s highly likely the 1,000 sq metre factory will have to be demolished. The zoning is industrial and mixed use and it is being proposed to vary this slightly to allow also for housing - Cllr Donal Grady was to the fore in that proposal. So there might be a proposal for a shopping centre cum park cum housing, or maybe even a new courts complex. Who knows what will come back? However, what is important is that whatever comes back will be acted upon and the new council in May when Killarney will be a seven-seater will take it on board quickly. Council managements says the expressions of interest will be considered “as soon as possible”. We hope it will be quicker than the Áras Phadraig which seems to have gone off the boil somewhat.

Words: Anne Lucey

lot paper. Might either Sheila Dickson or Sheila Casey be persuaded to return? They brought a rare energy to the council in their time and were the first female voices in the town hall. It was no coincidence that the long awaited playground got underway, that a smart uniform was adopted and civic receptions took on a bit more glamour with their presence. We need strong voices to poke the council management into action for Killarney. Part of the reason Tralee is getting so much is thanks to its councillors who include a solicitor, an auctioneer and a college lecturer. They are working in team fashion with man-

agement, many of whom are, of course, Tralee based also. Is there any Killarney solicitor who might like to run? Pat F O’Connor was a magnificent, outspoken and brave councillor in his day and might he be tempted to return? I was thinking of devising a poster much like the First World War Kitchener poster, “Your Town Needs You!” Meanwhile, Cllr Donal Grady raised an interesting point at the recent budget meeting in Tralee which was concentrated on the outgoing electoral area. “Why are we talking about Castleisland when it will be gone in May?” was his question. Why, indeed.

Ploughing Association To Hold Second Competition The recently affiliated Killarney Ploughing Association will hold their second points competition on Sunday, November 4 on the grounds of Coffey’s Farm, Fossa, leased by Tony Wharton. The ploughing match begins at 11am. It promises to be a great day of ploughing, conversation and plenty of tea! This is the second time a points match will be held in the Killarney and South Kerry area since the 1960s. The event was launched on Saturday by Deputy Danny Healy-Rae TD on the Wharton’s Farm, Dromin. There are now six ploughing associations in Kerry, strongest of course in North Kerry, Ardfert, Abbeydorney, Ballyheigue, Ballyduff and Causeway. “We are delighted to host our second points competition,” said PRO Siobhán Wharton. “Ploughing is such a wonderful tradition and heritage. The interest is

enormous. The association would also like to congratulate two of our members, Shane Godley and Michael Brosnan, who competed in the National Ploughing Championships. The Association wish to thank all of our sponsors for their continued support.” There was a strong tradition of ploughing in Killarney and South Kerry area in the 1950s. Killarney’s incredible ploughmen excelled in competition, winning six All-Ireland titles. They also hosted the first World Championships in 1954 and represented Ireland in Ontario, Canada in the World Championships. Killarney also hosted the National Ploughing Championships in 1939 and 1961. The Association President Mr Danny O’Leary of Bishop’s Farm, Ballycasheen was himself a champion at ploughing, winning many titles in the 1960s.

Award

Great Southern Recognised For Great Drive The team at Great Southern Killarney have been honoured with a prestigious award from the Irish Golf Tour Operators’ Association (IGTOA). The award for Large Golf Hotel of the Year 2018 was bestowed to Great Southern and is the fifth award in a row for the hotel, which earlier this year rebranded to its iconic previous identity, the Great Southern. The award from the IGTOA was presented to Ettienne Van Vrede, CEO of the Hayfield Family Collection, at the association’s annual National Golf Tourism Conference & Gala which took place last night on Tuesday. The Hayfield Family Collection is owned by the Scally family, who also own Hayfield Manor in Cork and Killarney Royal Hotel, both of which have previously been recognised with IGTOA awards. Representing his team, Ettienne Van Vrede stated: “We wish to extend sincere thanks to all our golf tour operator partners who have worked so hard to make Ireland a global golf destination. We are delighted to do our part by welcoming golfers from across the globe to Great Southern and by ensuring that they experience the warmth and hospitality for which Ireland is famous. “At Great Southern, we are driven to consistently improve our service, to create an outstanding guest experience, and that aim provides motivation and strong purpose to every member of our team. The golf tourism industry is a vital economic contributor to business in Killarney and subsequently helps us to maintain and invest in the exceptional beauty of our destination. This is a tremendous win for all the team at Great Southern and for all our local partners who

make Killarney such a wonderful visitor experience.” In recent times, Great Southern Killarney has achieved great success with awards such as Ireland’s Hotel Bar of the Year, Ireland’s Best Four Star Hotel and Best Hotel Breakfast at the Gold Medal Awards, and Best Conference Venue at the National Hospitality Awards.

Kerry Film Festival

A Velodrome For Killorglin? Councillor Michael Cahill has called on Kerry County Council to help Killorglin become the National Cycle Centre of Ireland by assisting them with their plans to develop an Indoor Velodrome and Olympic Supercross BMX track. Councillor Cahill said Killorglin has a great tradition in cycling, including a former winner of the Rás Tailteann, the great Gene Mangan. The Fianna Fáil Councillor said a campaign took place a number of years ago headed up by the late Paddy O’Callaghan to make Killorglin the National Cycle Centre of Ireland. The Rossbeigh councillor said Killorglin would be an ideal location and, when developed, such a facility will attract national and international teams and athletes to the Killorglin/Mid Kerry region.

Golf Club Honours Founding Members On 125th Anniversary Junior Minister Brendan Griffin TD was on hand to launch commemorative plaques for Killarney Golf and Fishing Club as they celebrate their 125th anniversary. The launch took place at Killarney House and Gardens as the history of Killarney Golf Club is inextricably intertwined with the story of the Earls of Kenmare, and in particular Lord Castlerosse. Historically, both locations have benefitted from the generosity of benefactors such as the McShain family, Lord Castlerosse, and Beatrice Grosvenor, who in generously donating their estates to the Irish Republic, have ensured that many generations to come will have the absolute pleasure of visiting and viewing these beautiful locations. While the primary mission of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is what it says in its name - to promote golf and fishing – the club are very conscious in celebrating its anniversary that they not only celebrate the present but also mark the past by erecting these commemorative plaques. In this way, the story of the men and women who founded Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and the story of its various locations will not be forgotten and will live on in present and future memories. The names of all the founder members are on a plaque and will be displayed permanently in Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. Relatives of the Downing Brothers, represented by Creagh Downing and Lady Tucker, and Ellen O’Connell, represented by Katie and Clare O’Connell, who were involved in the founding of the club. Lady Tucker was a founder member of the club and she was also a scratch golfer - both activities would not have been the norm for the majority of women at that time. As part of Killarney Golf Club’s 125, the Ladies Club, in consultation with Ellen and Lady Tucker’s family, re-designated the Lake Cup as the Ellen Lady Tucker Cup which was awarded to the best net score in Handicap 18 and

under on this year’s Lady Captain’s Day. Paddy McCarthy and his family and Mary Shanahan were also presented with a commemorative plaque. Killarney Golf Club was located on Paddy McCarthy’s land (Deerpark) from 1893-1936 and the clubhouse of Killarney Golf Club was located in Brú na Páirce which is the property of Mary Shanahan. Pat Dawson of Killarney House and Gardens was presented with a plaque to acknowledge the involvement of Valentine Browne, the 6th Earl of Kenmare, in establishing Killarney Golf and Fishing Club at its current lakeside location at Mahony’s Point in 1939. Valentine Browne was better known as Lord Castlerosse and is quoted as saying, “When anyone sees Killarney, even if he is the basest heretic, he must believe in God”. Lord Castlerosse found it necessary to find a new location for Killarney Golf Club due to the fact that the land agent for that part of the

Kenmare Estate located at Deerpark and comprising of the then Killarney Golf Club was instructed by receivers to obtain a proper market rate for the letting of the lands. The lands at that time in 1936 were let to Killarney Golf Club at a peppercorn rent of just 1 shilling per annum and, following a review, it was decided that the rate should rise to £75 per annum. This was a massive and potentially ruinous increase, and one that the then membership of some 130 could not afford. After all they were only paying 1 guinea per annum as their subscription, which in total amounted to £136 and 10 shillings. Thanks to the vision of these men and women, Killarney Golf and Fishing Club found a new home on the shores of Lough Lein. This vision has made the club what it is today, with all its rich history and breath-taking scenery, and we look forward to what the next 125 years will bring.

Students Honoured At SPSL Awards Night

V

Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra had the delight of welcoming former student, author of sell-out show ‘Patrick’ and well-known journalist Aidan O’Conner as the guest speaker at their recent awards ceremony. The Local to Global theme chronicled the wide-ranging experiences exhausted by the variety of students in SPSL, from the obvious in-house and state exams in Rathmore, to triumph in the National Basketball Arena, to the unusual success of fielding four Kerry minors on their Croke Park journey, to stardom in Sarajevo noted by MC Carmel O’Keeffe. “Any award is no mean feat,” Aidan acknowledged in how the school values the whole student in the array of awards. The local historian engaged the audience with a brilliant speech on having “no regrets and no fears”. The message was powerful and the advice to be “one’s own best” was important. This connected with the recurrent concept of determination. He continued this theme and gave

Considering the size of the school in a small rural village it was an amazing achievement of dedication, determination and huge success to win at the top level of Irish basketball. The Leaving Certificate Student of the Year was Diarmaid Nagle. His excellent results meant he is in the 0.3 % of students to accomplish such high grades. He was on the successful maths team, he never missed a day of secondary school and was always first into the classroom. 11 students scored higher than 500 points, representing 1.1% of the country. New Drink-Driving Laws Don’t Forget To Vote… Officially In Effect The presidential election and blasphemy referendum are both taking place today so don’t forget to exercise your democratic right and get out and vote. The location of your polling station will be written on your polling card. If you haven’t received a polling card, your local council will be able

A new provision that will see drink-drivers facing an automatic disqualification from the road were implemented from midnight last night. The Minister for Transport announced the commencement of the drink-driving provisions of the Road Traffic Act yesterday afternoon. Speaking at the launch, Minister Shane Ross described the measure as a significant step to clamp down on drink-driving. Minister Ross said it was “always wrong to give people the mild slap on the wrist of three penalty points for such lethal behaviour”.

He accused some of his Oireachtas colleagues of trying to delay the provision by playing irresponsible parliamentary games. The bill was passed in July, but it had been delayed for several months due to the strong opposition mounted by a small number of TDs from the Rural Independent Group. Drivers detected by a member of An Garda Síochána with between 50mg and 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, 107mg of alcohol per 100ml of urine, or 35 mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, will be disqualified from holding a driving licence for a period of 3 months and receive a fine of €200.

to guide you (as long as you are registered). Polls opened at 7am this morning and will close at 10pm tonight. As long as you’re in the door before 10pm, you will be allowed to vote. Voters are warned that there may be a last-minute rush, so voting earlier in the day is advisable.

American Football To Return To Croke Park College football will return to Dublin in 2020 when Notre Dame and Navy will meet in their annual rivalry game at the Aviva Stadium. The teams last met in Ireland in 2012 when Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish routed the Midshipmen 50-10 in front of more than 48,000 fans. Since then, Penn State have faced Central Florida at Croke Park in 2014, while 2016 saw Georgia Tech defeat Boston College at the Aviva.

Their 2020 match-up will be played on August 29 and act as their respective first game of the season, and it marks the start of a new five-game agreement for games to take place in Ireland. Ireland’s Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: “College football is one of the greatest spectacles in world sport and to bring it back to Ireland for a five-game series is wonderful news for Irish tourism and for sports fans.”

Trump Corner Trump Blames Media As Pipe Bombs Target Democrats Tweeting yesterday, President Donald Trump blamed the news media for the division and anger in the United States, as the authorities discovered more pipe bombs intended for the president’s political rivals. Mr Trump had called the night before for national unity in response to pipe bombs directed at some of his favourite targets, but soon after said the “Mainstream Media,” which he called “Fake News,” was at fault for the anger because of its “false and inaccurate reporting.” In his tweet yesterday morning, Mr Trump did not mention that CNN, the news network that he has long assailed and called “fake news,” was among

the targets of a pipe bomb, along with former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joseph R Biden Jr and the actor Robert De Niro. Mr Trump’s posture as a leader working to bring the country together - saying on Wednesday that any attempted terrorist act “against any American is an attack on every American” - was brief. Senator Chris Murphy, Democrat of Connecticut, pointed to the president’s tweet on Thursday morning as motivation for Democrats to vote in the coming midterm elections. The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, defended her boss yesterday in remarks to Fox News. “The president, I think, could not have been more presidential when he spoke,” she said. Republicans and Democrats were quick to blame each other.

Their first comeback gig in Croke Park quickly sold out leaving many fans disappointed, but fans can now try to snap up tickets for their second show on Saturday, July 6 in the stadium. The band, made up of Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan, recently told RTÉ 2FM’s Jenny Greene they “honestly harbour no ill feeling” towards their former bandmate Brian McFadden who left the group in 2004. “We honestly harbour no ill feeling towards Brian whatsoever,” said Greene’s 2FM co-host Byrne. “Never have done. When we first got back to talk about it [reuniting], we all discussed that we were always going to take Westlife off again where we left it in 2012. “Brian walked away obviously in 2004 and what people forget is that it sometimes hurts us a little bit when you see the headlines that ‘Simon Cowell wanted Brian’ [for the reunion].” “We never fell out with Brian and none of those things,” Byrne continued. “But we did nine-and-a-half years without him and we genuinely harbour no ill feeling towards Brian and sometimes press and stuff and all these stories don’t help the relationship, because there is no ill feeling from either way.”

US Girls Arrested For 40 Schools To Be Inspected “Satanic” Murder Plot Amid Safety Concern

Two Florida schoolgirls have been arrested and accused of plotting to kill classmates in a satanic rite. Police say the pair, 11 and 12, told officers they were Satan worshippers and planned to kill at least 15 students at Bartow Middle School. On Tuesday they were searched by police who found weapons including a butcher’s knife, pizza cutter and scissors. They told investigators they planned to drink the blood of their victims and “possibly eat their flesh”.

The search took place after a student informed a teacher about a possible attack in a school building. The two girls were waiting in the toilet for younger students that they could “overpower to be their victims”, police said. In a statement, Bartow police chief Joe Hall said a search of the girls’ mobile phones revealed text messages plotting the attack, and officers had also found a handwritten note saying: “Go to bathroom to kill.”

Man Jailed After Rotting Sons’ Teeth With Coca-Cola The father of two boys, aged three and four, has been sent to prison in France after rotting their teeth with cake and Coca-Cola, prosecutors say. The man, described as an alcoholic who was violent to his wife and children, was jailed for three months. Limoges Criminal Court found he had failed to meet his obligations as a parent between 2016 and 2018. The eldest child had to have seven rotten teeth taken out, while his younger brother does not speak. Both boys have been taken into foster care, where they are being fed a healthy diet. Carole Papon, a representative of the victims’ aid association France Victimes 87, said the father could “neither read, nor write, nor count, doesn’t realise the seriousness of the situation, and spent all his welfare

money on alcohol”. The family “had nothing to eat. They only had Coca-Cola to drink,” she said. Deputy Public Prosecutor Bruno Robinet said the boys had been “left to their own devices”. “There was no fridge, the children slept on a mattress without covers and there were no toys... Their father fed them on cakes and Coke,” he told news agency AFP.

Questions have been raised as to why tenders to build schools continued to be awarded to Western Business Systems when fire defects had been identified. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar confirmed yesterday that approximately 40 schools will be inspected amidst concerns about structural issues at a number of facilities. Two schools and a building at a third, all in Dublin, have been closed so far this week following inspections by the Department of Education. They are Tyrrelstown Educate Together, St Luke’s National School also in Tyrrelstown and Ardgillan Community College in Balbriggan. Education Minister Joe McHugh told reporters yesterday that it is likely more schools will have to close, but said there are no indications that all 42 schools will face such drastic action. Dun Laoghaire TD Richard Boyd Barrett told the Dáil he raised concerns about

Western Building Services in September 2017 and specifically asked why contracts continued to be awarded to the company when fire defects in schools had been identified. Speaking previously in the Oireachtas Education Committee, the TD also raised concerns about the same company being involved in the construction of the extension to Beaumont Hospital, Poppintree rapid-build homes, and Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

South African Students Create Urine Bricks

Human urine has been used to create environmentally friendly bricks by university students in South Africa. They combined urine with sand and bacteria in a process that allows the bricks to solidify at room temperature. “It’s essentially the same way that coral is made in the ocean,” Dyllon Randall, their supervisor at the University of Cape Town, told the BBC. Regular bricks need to be baked in high-temperature kilns that produce large amounts of carbon dioxide. The engineering students at the University of Cape Town (UCT) have been harvesting urine from men’s toilets. The bricks take between four and six days to grow depending on the strength needed After first making a solid fertiliser, the

leftover liquid is then used in a biological process “to grow” what the university calls “bio-bricks”. The process is called microbial carbonate precipitation. The bacteria produces an enzyme that breaks down urea in the urine, forming calcium carbonate, which then binds the sand into rock hard, grey bricks. On average a person typically produces between 200ml and 300ml of urine per urination. A “bio-brick” needs between 25 litres and 30 litres to grow - this may sound a lot, but most of this urine is also used to produce about 1kg of fertiliser. So to make one urine brick, you’d need to go to the bathroom about 100 times. The strength and shape of the bio-bricks can be altered as required.

For Choosing A Sofa

Buying a sofa is one of the biggest furniture investments for your home. We’ve talked to some designers to get their top tips for choosing your sofa. Try before you buy. The average sofa has a seat depth of 60cm, which gives plenty of room to manoeuvre if you have long legs and allows you to tuck them under if you’re shorter. But seat depths vary so it’s important to try out different styles to find what you are most comfortable with. Seat heights also vary; do you prefer to sit in? Also, which height suits your room and style? Invest in a good frame. We’ve all walked into a furniture shop and fallen in love with a sofa, but it’s important to ask what’s under the fabric. A quality frame will see you through many years of lounging. Don’t forget the cushions. What goes into them this is as important as the fabric used on the outside. Feather-filled cushions are high on comfort but they need regular plumping, while foam or fibre fillings may flatten out and lose shape over time. A combination of feather and foam is the best of both worlds. You can also go for back cushions filled with feather and seat cushions filled with foam or fibre. Access. It’s important to measure the space where your sofa is going but also how it’s going to get into your room. If access is limited, you may need to opt for a low back style, a sofa with removable legs, or a modular design that can be brought in in sections.

Whether you’re looking for a place to sit and chat or a cosy spot to plop down and read a book, sofas are a staple in any lounge area. But with endless options at our fingertips, finding the perfect sofa can be overwhelming to say the least. Consider the following main points before choosing a sofa and your shopping experience will go from intimidating to exciting.

Airfield Corner Chaise Corcorans

COLOUR

The colour you choose for your sofa is very important and can make or break your room. It can either match the rest of the décor in its general lines or it can coordinate with certain key elements. It can also be the one piece that stands out without having to match anything. Once you decide if your sofa will be an accent or neutral colour, you'll need to decide if your sofa will be light or dark. Your floor colour has a big effect on choosing the right sofa colour. If you're considering a potential sofa sitting on your floor, will it float on a sea of dark wood floor or carpet or will it blend into it? Because a sofa is traditionally large and upholstered, and most fabric absorbs light, it can darken a room considerably. A trick I use when considering a new sofa colour is to find a sheet or blanket in a similar colour and drape it over the existing sofa. This gives you an idea of how the colour will look, and if the sofa will be too dark or too light for the room. Don't forget accent pillows and throws as the finishing touches when coordinating your new sofa with your room decor. These little pops of colour give your living room that pulled-together look.

Lauren Two seater Corcorans

Flockart Chaise Corcorans

SIZE

Consider how large your room is, the height of the ceiling, and which other furnishings you want to incorporate in the room. Make sure the sofa’s length, depth, and height are in proportion to your room. Making up a template in cardboard or newspaper and putting it on the floor gives you a great idea of what space your sofa will take up and if there is enough space for ease of movement in the room, and for your other furniture.

TYPE

The size and function of your room will dictate the type of sofa that best fits your space. Is this a small, formal area for conversation? Opt for a loveseat, settee, or sofa with

more petite dimensions. Is this a large room where you gather to relax or watch a movie? Choose a deep sofa or corner sofa where you can tuck up your feet and snuggle in for the night.

UPHOLSTERY

Select a fabric that is in line with the function of the space. Determine if it is a high-use area. In a formal living room or master bedroom you can get away with a light cotton or linen upholstery, but in a high-use area with kids and pets, stick to a textile that is easy to clean. Removable covers are an option, or choose leather.

Hindus Descend On Killarney For Festival Of Durga Killarney is abuzz this week with the swish of saris, the beat of traditional drums and the chant of Hindu verse. Hindu people have come from all over the island of Ireland to celebrate the festival of Durga, Hindu goddess and defender of goodness. The festival of Durga Puja (‘puja’ means ‘prayer’) celebrates Mother Durga who reminds us to combat evil, to take care of each other and Mother Earth. Durga Puja is organised by the Irish Hindu Cultural Organisation (IHCO) which has been running this Festival Puja since 2001 in Killarney. It is the oldest Durga Puja in Ireland. Durga Puja is an auspicious day for Hindu people. This festival is celebrated by Hindus worldwide and is the main Hindu festival for Bengalis. Durga reflects female might, positive energy and the triumph of good over evil. Hinduism celebrates women and gender equality in society. Durga Puja is highly significant as Durga is all powerful. The story goes that god gave Oshur (Durga’s predecessor) power over man and god. Oshur abused the power and became evil. Even god was powerless to stop Oshur as he was now more powerful than god. However god had forgotten to make Oshur more powerful than womankind! Durga vanquished Oshur and became all-powerful. Durga uses her powers for good purposes. Every year at this time Hindus gather together to celebrate enthusiastically for five days. This annual festival is open to all communities and the Killarney Committee of IHCO extends a warm welcome to everyone to join in the festivities. Three responsible personnel who are the main organisers for this auspicious Festival panel: Mr Prasanta Chakrabarty, Mr Sudip Pal and Mr Narayan Roy. The Hindu Cultural Organisation Kerry have expressed their gratitude to Kerry County. Council and South Kerry Development Partnership (SICAP) for their assistance. Facebook search ‘Durga Puja Killarney’ for more information.

Car Safety

Crash-Test Cars Make A Statement In The Showroom Stinger that was tested by ANCAP. The Stinger will move on to other Kia dealers in coming weeks. A Mazda CX-5 (pictures) has been parked in the showroom in Victoria, and crashed examples of the Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Kona, LDV D90 and Toyota Corolla are also on tour. Australians are known for their straight talking but we Europeans are very much reserved in our buying methods, the sight of a crashed car in a shiny car showroom could have the opposite effect. It will be interesting to see if the Euro NCAP would adopt this way of thinking.

Australian car dealerships are embracing a new strategy to inform car buyers about car safety and hopefully boost sales. The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) and the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) have joined forces to bring the attention of buyers to the issue of safety on the road. A ‘national display road show’ is touring the country, setting up a crashed car inside new-car showrooms to demonstrate the strength and protection of the respective vehicle. Porsche Taycan Crossover Confirmed It’s official: the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo has been confirmed for production as the German sports car brand’s second all-electric model. Revealed at the 2018 Geneva motor show as a “road-ready concept study”, the high-riding battery-powered crossover wagon concept will be based on the upcoming Taycan electric car. The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, as it’s expected to be called, will join the Panamera and Panamera Sport Turismo, with which it shares its wagon body style – this time equipped with obligatory crossover additions such as a jacked-up ride height, wheel-arch flares and lower body-side cladding

New 2019 Mazda3 Teased The tease has begun ahead of the fourth generation Mazda3’s unveiling at the Los Angeles motor show next month. Mazda has issued a 15-second video showing two side angles of the vital new small car. And that’s it. The short video doesn’t give too much away, offering only a glimpse of the C-pillar and a murky preview of the car’s heavily sculpted sides. However, it’s enough to suggest that renders which show the new model taking inspiration from the KAI concept car are close to the mark. What is known is the new Mazda3 will debut Mazda’s Skyactiv-X spark controlled compression ignition petrol engine technology. Mazda promises SPCCI will deliver turbo-diesel torque and economy, ultra-low emissions and the refinement and responsiveness of high-performance petrol four-cylinder. The new Mazda3 will be underpinned by a new chassis, which is promised to deliver a substantial improvement in Mazda’s consistent NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) bugbear.

75th Anniversary

The Rome Escape Line & The War In Italy After the surrender of Italy in September, the winter of 1943-1944 heralded the worst period in the WW2 Italy Campaign. Now that the Italian forces were out of the equation, the Allied Invasion plan (a very naïve plan in hindsight) was that the Allies would quickly move up through Italy, onwards to Rome and then to northern Italy. Unfortunately, the Allied Italy Campaign proved to be one marked by poor military intelligence, fatal hesitation, missed opportunities and unexpected stiff resistance by the post-Armistice reinforced German forces. Having progressed as far as Naples and just beyond, the Allied advance met stiff resistance during the period October ‘43 to January ‘44 – eventually overcoming the initial German defence lines (i.e. the Volturno Line, the Barbara Line and the Bernhardt Line). However, Allied advances came to a complete halt at the famous Gustav Line at Monte Cassino where the Germans dug in and held their line right over the remainder of the winter and spring of 1944. Commencing on January 11, 1944, the Battle for Monte Cassino would prove to be the costliest in terms of casualties on both sides. Following massive aerial bombardment, the German forces occupied the now ruined Abbey of Monte Cassino necessitating numerous and costly Allied infantry assaults. Throughout this time while the military stalemate was in place at Monte Cassino (less than two hours’ drive south of Rome), Monsignor Hugh’s Escape Line was working tirelessly within Rome to secure those escapees that made it as far as the Eternal City. Together with other priests from the Vatican, he was also actively involved in finding secure hiding places in convents and abbeys for Rome’s Jewish population, which had become the latest target for Nazi round-ups. It was estimated that at the time the Jewish population in Rome numbered roughly 7,500. Prior to October 1943, Rome’s Jews were relatively safe because Italy was part of the Axis and, behind the scenes, the Vatican continued to intervene on

their behalf. The Vatican and others were taken by surprise when the October round-up began. The various rescue organisations mobilised as quickly as they could but it was unfortunately too late for the initial 1,500 that were rounded up and transported to concentration camps – never to return. Thankfully, secure hiding places were found for the remaining 6,000 and no more Jews were captured or deported from Rome. Although he was only four years of age at the time, one young Jewish boy, Ilan Jacobi, writes in his memoir of the role played by Monsignor Hugh in hiding himself and his extended family during the Jewish round-up. Monsignor Hugh had provided the family with false documents declaring them as Catholics and while the children were kept securely in a nearby convent, the adults had to be kept in “safe apartments”. The story about his mother, Hildegard, goes as follows: “Hildegard and her parents-in-law were given a flat in a nearby building. The fascist doorman of the building began to be suspicious of the new tenants, especially since he heard them apparently praying in a foreign language in their flat. “Mother Antoniazzi informed O’Flaherty that the doorman had been spreading a rumour that this family were Jewish. The Monsignor came over immediately to the building and confronted the doorman directly. He said that they were from Switzerland and spoke an unusual language. O’Flaherty told the doorman that he had personally helped the family to

A newspaper article announces the surrender of Italy.

arrive in Rome from Switzerland to find shelter here. If the doorman persisted in spreading lies, O’Flaherty would see to it that he was excommunicated. “For a while, the doorman stopped speaking about the Jacobi family, but then he resumed spreading the rumour that they were Jews and that he intended to report them. Mother Antoniazzi again informed O’Flaherty. This time he decided to move the Jacobis to a new apartment. Mother Antoniazzi told Hildegard about the proposed move and informed her that O’Flaherty was paying the rent for a number of such flats around the city which were being used to hide Jews. Ilan was reunited with his mother and the move to the new flat was done on the doorman’s day off”.

Garden Magic The backbone of spring colour is undoubtedly provided by tulip varieties. I am a great fan of them, especially lily flowered varieties which have pointed petals, and, in my opinion, last much longer than the bowl-shaped flowers. Varieties such as ‘West point’ (yellow), ‘Queen of Sheba’ (orange edged in red), ‘Ballerina’ (orange), or ‘Marilyn’ (white with red) are old varieties, but are very suited to our weather. Tulips really are available in every size and colour. ‘Red Riding Hood’ is a dwarf, growing only to about 20cm. Viridiflora varieties such as ‘Greenland’ or ‘Hummingbird’ have partly green petals, along with pink, yellow, white or any number of other colours, giving them a wonderfully fresh appearance. Fringed tulips have petals which are finely toothed, or fringed, at the edges. ‘Blue Heron’ is a lilac one, and ‘Burgundy Lace’ is a deep wine red one. Tulip kaufmannia hybrids are dwarf types, growing to 20cm – ‘Giusseppi Verdi’ (yellow/red) and ‘Johann Strauss’ (cream with red stripes) are two examples. There are botanical varieties also, which are ‘wild’ and mainly uncultivated varieties. Generally these tulips

Tulips Are A Great Cure For The Winter Blues remain close to the ground, and fair much better as permanent plants than their larger cousins. They naturalise quite happily, provided the soil is reasonably well-drained. They flower before other tulips, and are usually open, star-shaped blooms. Many of them have variegated foliage, adding to their attractiveness. They are extremely well suited to rockeries. Tulipa tarda is an example of these, bearing white flowers with a yellow centre. Another one to look out for is T. batalinii, with it’s yellow/apricot flowers. T. clusiana are a range of delicate looking but hardy little tulips, which come in a range of colours, particularly fresh white with bright pink stripes. One of my favourites, which I have a nice (little) swathe of, is T. pulchella ‘Persian Pearl’. It is cerise pink with outer petals which look almost silver on some days. T. saxatilis is probably the one which is most readily available in all garden centres. It is very cute – it almosy looks like someone dropped sweets where it grows! It is bright pink with a yellow centre. Tulips have a history as coloured as their flowers. They are native to Central Asia and Turkey in particular. It is generally accepted that they were first introduced

to Europe (Vienna) in 1554 by Ogier de Busbecq, and very quickly made their way to Holland where its cultivation started in earnest about forty years later. This lead to the famous ‘Tulip Mania’ where single bulbs were bought and sold for the price of a mansion. It was the beautiful colours of the flowers, which was unparalleled by any other flower at the time, which led to it’s popularity. Tulips with multi-coloured petals were especially coveted. It was unknown at the time that this variation in colours was due to a mosaic virus. The tulip broke the virus – so called as it ‘breaks’ the single colour of the petal. The mania reached its peak during the winter of 1636-7, but ground to a halt and collapsed due to the Bubonic plague. Tulips were no cure for the bubonic plague, unfortunately, but they are a great cure for the winter blues, which affects many of us right around their flowering time in February!

Amy Schumer shared a picture of pregnant royals Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, digitally replacing their faces with those of herself and husband Chris Fishcer. Her caption directed fans to visit the Instagram page of political journalist Jessica Yellin, where when you read to the end of the post the announcement was made, amid campaigning for the midterm elections. ‘I wanted to share some news from our community, maybe it’s noise but it’s happy noise,’ Yellin said. ‘So I’m not in the business of making voting recommendations, but these are the recommendations of Amy Schumer, one of the most consistent and earliest supporters of News Not Noise. ‘Now read all the way to the bottom, you’ll see there’s some news down there. Congratulations, Amy.’

Brad Pitt and Margaret Qualley, 23, braved the sunny temperatures to commence work on the Quentin Tarantino motion picture Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Brad Pitt seemed to be in good spirits while sipping on a beverage in a clear attempt to stay hydrated throughout the duration of the shoot. You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual Glory. Amen. (Say this prayer three consecutive days without stating the request, after the 3rd day the request will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your request is granted.)

Book Review: We Were Liars If you’re looking for a quick read that will leave you thinking and questioning everything you just read, E.Lockhart’s novel ‘We Were Liars’ is sure to suit you. This book follows the life of Cadence Sinclair who is the eldest grandchild of the wealthy Harris Sinclair. Her family is very wealthy and they like to pretend that they’re perfect. Though Cadence knows that this comes at a cost because any unhappiness or odd behavior is often ignored. The Sinclair family spend every summer on their very own private island. Not every summer is the same however, as Cadence had an accident when she was fifteen. She struck her head in the water and now suffers from a serious head injury. She has no recollection of what happened to her that summer, only that she now gets terrible migraines. Her family

Words: Ailbhe Gammell

members also act strange towards her and keep their distance. No one seems to want to tell her what happened that summer and she is very frustrated with herself that she can’t remember. The four ‘Liars’ as they call themselves (Gat, Johnny, Mirren and Cadence), try to help her to remember what happened two years after her accident when she returns to the island. As her memories slowly come flooding back to her, she realizes why everyone has been acting so strange to her and her life takes an unexpected turn for the worst. The twist ending was extremely shocking and I did not see it coming. This book is very clever and unlike anything I have ever read before. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy fiction books as this one is certainly worth the read.

Kerry SFC Final Dr Crokes v Dingle | Sunday at 3pm |Austin Stack Park Words: Adam Moynihan

1-18 2-13

Rejuvenated Crokes Ready For Final Battle

Underdogs Kieran’s led with five minutes to play in Lewis Road but Crokes finished strongly with four straight points from Daithí Casey, Paul Clarke, Jordan Kiely and Johnny Buckley.

Round 2A

Dr Crokes 2-16 Rahilly’s 3-18 (Fitzgerald Stadium) The reigning champions were up nine points with just 10 minutes to play but Rahilly’s, led by a resurgent Tommy Walsh, produced a stunning comeback to claim an unlikely win.

Round 3

Dr Crokes 3-28 An Ghaeltacht 2-15 (Fitzgerald Stadium) The Killarney men were on the ropes early doors in this one but a moment of madness by Marc Ó Sé swung the tie irreversibly in Crokes’ favour. Tony Brosnan kicked 1-14 (1-11 from play) and zero wides in a memorable display.

Quarter-Final

Dr Crokes 1-20 Legion 0-9 (Fitzgerald Stadium) This derby failed to live up to expectations as Pat O’Shea’s side flew out of the traps to build up an early lead. They eventually ran out comfortable winners.

Semi-Final

Dr Crokes 2-19 Rahilly’s 2-10 (Austin Stack Park) The Crokes secured their spot in a third consecutive county final with a nine-point victory over the side that sent them through the back door. Jordan Kiely caught the eye with a brace while veteran marksman Kieran O’Leary chipped in with five points.

When Crokes fell apart against Kerins O’Rahilly’s at the start of September, obituaries had already been written before people had reached the bottom of the Sandpit. Half the team were past it. This fella is too old. That fella isn’t up to it. It always amazes me how short the memory of a football fan is. I definitely thought they were faltering somewhat, and their flaws were certainly laid bare in that final quarter, but to write this Crokes team off completely was madness. I remember speaking to a friend (I won’t say what club he is) and he was delighted. “It makes the championship way more interesting,” he said. I agreed but warned that Crokes might come back stronger through the back door. “There’s a back door?! Ah bollocks.” It does seem as though that shock to the system was exactly what Crokes needed and bar the opening 10 or 15 minutes against An Ghaeltacht in Round 3, they’ve been back to their devastating best. They put Legion to the sword in the quarters and exacted revenge against Rahilly’s in Tralee a fortnight ago. They are odds-on favourites to win on Sunday and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone this side of Páirc an Ághasaigh who would back against them. Not that Dingle will make it easy for them. I was actually away for both the drawn game against East Kerry and the replay so I can’t comment too much on what transpired but by all accounts there was a nastiness to their game that unsettled their opponents.

Tony Brosnan in particular is sure to be in for a bumpy ride but Crokes can mix it as well so things could get a bit spicy. The last thing Pat O’Shea will want is an hour-long fight, though. Crokes are the better team and they will in all likelihood beat Dingle at football – if a game of football is what we get. The referee will play a big role in this regard. Of course, it would be disrespectful to dismiss Dingle as merely a team of fighters. They have some outstanding footballers, most notably goal machine Paul Geaney who is liable to do damage against any full back line he comes up against. One of the criticisms I heard of East Kerry the last day was that they left Geaney 1 v 1 with his marker at the top of the square. I don’t think Crokes will be that naïve and I’d expect him to be smothered any time a long ball comes in his direction. Roving defender Tom O’Sullivan continues to turn heads too and the all-action half-back kicked five points from play in his last outing. It will be interesting to see who is tasked with keeping him quiet in the decider. I just think Crokes have too many weapons up front. Even if the free-scoring Tony Brosnan is kept quiet – which won’t be easily done - you have the revitalised Kieran O’Leary, you have David Shaw, you have Jordan Kiely… Everywhere you look there’s a potential match-winner and that’s what continues to separate Crokes from every other team in Kerry. Verdict: Crokes by six.

Crokes Must Not Retaliate Dr Crokes will be provoked by Dingle but they have to keep their heads, writes Eamonn Fitzgerald

The Dr Crokes team at a press night ahead of the Kerry SFC final against Dingle. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.

Dingle are a very fit team and break through defences at will so there is a big ask for Crokes on Sunday. You can be sure that players such as Kieran O’Leary, Tony Brosnan and David Shaw will come in for special attention. With heavy tackling Dingle will be hell bent on putting them off their game. Crokes will find that intensity on Sunday and Dingle will be very hard to beat. Paul Geaney is the big man in the Dingle side and it is going to be very difficult to keep down his scoring potential. It will be a big test for Michael Moloney who has to contest everything that comes in and Geaney can win high ball at his ease. At the time of writing, the fitness of Shane Murphy and David O’Leary is still uncer-

tain. Crokes will be looking to Gavin White for a big game. Midfield is vital. Liam O’Connor and Barry O’Sullivan controlled the middle of the park on Sunday last so Crokes will be depending on a great pairing in Johnny Buckley and Daithí Casey. This duo have had a great year and will be expected to win this vital battle. Not alone can they win aerial battle but both can go in and take their own scores as well. If Crokes win this important test they have the forwards to get the resultant scores. Kieran O’Leary was magnificent in the Rahilly’s match and a repeat of that form on Sunday will be a great start for Crokes. Tony Brosnan is also in great scoring form but he will be marked very closely. David Shaw has done very well

and hopefully he will be able to shoot for those all-important scores. Micheál Burns is playing great football this season. He has great pace and stamina to burn. Crokes will face intensity and fouling all over the field so they will have to be very patient and not retaliate. They must play their own game in so much as that is possible against Dingle. They should not be impatient despite the provocation that will arise. Despite the negative side to the Dingle game plan they can still play great football. The referee for the county final is not known at the time of writing so the way he handles the match is all-important. There are plenty of good players in both sides who can rise above the fouling that has crept into football.

Blistering Dingle Start Kills East Kerry’s Dreams Kerry SFC Semi-Final (Replay) Dingle 4-13 | East Kerry 0-12 Dingle qualified for the Kerry SFC Final against Dr Crokes as early as the 9th minute in last Sunday’s semi-final replay at Tralee. At that stage they led by 3-1 to 0-1 and East Kerry were chasing the game thereafter. Mikey Geaney opened the scoring with a first minute point and this was followed by an equalising point from Paudie Clifford. Dingle sent high, fast ball into their inside line and it reaped rich dividends especially with Paul Geaney, their full-forward who is in such devastating form. In the 3rd minute he out-fielded Dan O’Donoghue and drew the foul in the small square. He shot the penalty himself under the diving body of Brendan Kealy. David Clifford scored two points but back came Paul Geaney for another goal in the 8th minute when he outwitted the defence. Then Barry O’Sullivan paved

the way for Mikey Geaney’s goal to crown a magnificent opening 10 minutes for Dingle. Just 10 minutes gone and East Kerry had a mountain to climb. They did score four more points to trail by 0-7 to 3-7 at half-time. Aided by the stiff breeze much was expected of East Kerry in the second half but try as they might Dingle came at them in waves. The real star was Tom O’Sullivan who was listed at centre back but he strode upfield to score five

points. A big melee broke out near the dugout early in the second half where it was a free for all and the real culprits were the Dingle men. They play on the edge, exerting multiple tackles on the opposition, and this sharp edge in their play makes it very hard to play against them. David Clifford was targeted for special attention and his brother Paudie was sent off when he came to his rescue. Worse was to follow for East Kerry when David was sent off in the 47th minute. The game was well and truly over as a contest. Jack Sherwood played a captain’s part but he lacked support. The final score was Dingle 4-13 East Kerry 0-12.

Eight Weeks For This? It’s An Absolute Disgrace Football fans across the country were rightly abhorred by the incident in last Sunday’s Kerry SFC semi-final which left East Kerry youngster Dara Moynihan laid out on the floor. Video footage clearly shows Dingle selector Colm Geaney rushing onto the field to punch Moynihan in the face. Observers the length and breadth of the country called for a lengthy ban (if not a lifetime ban) but, incredibly, the county board handed out an eight-week suspension. It’s an absolute disgrace. What kind of message are the GAA sending out here? In March, a Clare footballer squirted water in the general direction of an umpire. He was banned for three months. I know a lad who was incorrectly told by his Australian club that his suspension from a 7-a-side tournament didn’t carry over to their league competition. He played in the league and got a six-month worldwide ban. And a non-player entering the field of play to physically assault a player gets eight weeks? Geaney will miss the county final on Sunday, which Dingle are expected to lose, and he’ll be back on the line for the start of next season. There has been a lot of player-on-player violence recently but, as public reaction to this particular incident has shown, there is something particularly egregious about someone entering the field to attack a player. On-pitch fighting isn’t something that I’d condone but you have to give some leeway to the guys who are actually out there. It’s a physical game and everyone is desperate to win. Things get heated - it’s simply bound to boil over every now and then. You accept that as a player and unless it’s an especially aggressive or sneaky assault, guys rarely even hold a grudge. It’s water under the bridge. But

a non-player, who has no business whatsoever on the field of play, simply cannot do what Geaney did on Sunday. It’s assault, in my opinion, and should be treated as such. The old “If you did it on the street…” argument doesn’t always hold up but in this instance I think it does. If someone did the same thing outside the chipper the night before he’d end up in court. If a supporter ran onto the field and did it he’d be in serious trouble. Why should a selector get away with what is effectively a slap on the wrist? As far as I’m concerned, the pitch should be for players and players alone. You see managers and selectors roaming the sidelines and encroaching 5-10 yards onto the field of play, sometimes more. As a player I find it so annoying. Mentors run across the breadth of the field to have a quick chat with a player, often while the ball is in play. I’m convinced there’s no need for it half the time. To be honest, I think some mentors get a bit of a buzz out of it. They want to feel like they’re part of the action and they want people up in the terrace to see how integral they are to the operation. In reality, the instructions you get from the sideline are rarely insightful. The gist is generally, “Don’t do that bad thing you just did. Do something good instead.” Got it. Sound. If managers really need to pass on information to their players, maybe a runner system like the one in the AFL would be a… runner? Allow two designated members of the backroom team to enter the field at an appropriate juncture, speak to players and leave in a timely fashion. If they fail to adhere to the rules, say for instance they address or approach an opposition player, they get sent off and the team forfeits their right to deploy a runner for the rest of the game.

And the runners could double as maoir uisce as well. Some clubs are giving bottles to any Joe Soap on the basis that “He’s just a water boy” but, when it comes down to it, you’re basically giving unqualified people free reign to enter the field whenever they deem fit. I think technical areas like the ones in soccer would be a good idea too. Some GAA managers would have a hard time adapting but so be it. At the end of the day, player safety has to be paramount and as last Sunday’s incident shows, some non-players actually need to be penned in. When things do get tetchy, managers/selectors/ maoir uisce entering the field of play can be more than annoying; it can be downright infuriating. Players square up all the time but 99 times of out of 100, no punches are thrown. Even when a punch is thrown, the flare-up almost always resolves itself relatively quickly. The intervention of a mentor, or a maor uisce, or even a sub – even if his intentions are good – invariably has an aggravating effect rather than a calming one. If you’re playing your immediate reaction is, “Get off the f***ing pitch”. Look, I wasn’t down there on the line the last day. The culprit may feel as though he can somehow justify what happened. Maybe words were exchanged. But, funnily enough, with players from both sides piling into the melee, Dara actually made the decision not to take part. He may have been worried about getting sent off and so did the smart thing by keeping his distance. And he still ended up getting attacked. The GAA have to get serious with their punishments when incidents like this happen. The way things are going, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt. Or worse.

Limerick Celtics 75 | Scotts Lakers St Paul’s 98

Lucey Returns As Lakers Bounce Back In Limerick Words: Eamonn Keogh

Scotts Lakers bounced back to winning ways with a comprehensive 23-point victory over Limerick Celtics in St Munchin’s last Saturday night. After two recent defeats, it was a badly needed victory for the Killarney side and it puts them back in second place on the league table. It also gets them in the right frame of mind for a big National Cup clash away to Dublin Lions this weekend. This was a match that the Lakers were always in control of. The welcome return of Pádraig Lucey was a big boost and the Killarney side were 2415 in front at the end of the first quarter. Seán O’Brien was back to his best and he knocked down 18 points in the first half as team coach Cormac O’Donogue ran his full bench. All eleven players featured prominently in the opening half. The Lakers enjoyed a 45-35 advantage at halftime and started the second half in convincing fashion. Papito Hersisia, Andrew Fitzgerald and Pádraig Lucey dominated the boards while Seán O’Brien, Séamus Brosnan, Mark Greene, Dailian Mason and Cian Clernon were also prominent as the Killarney men opened up a 73-51 lead by the end of the third.

Seán O’Brien sat out the closing minutes of the third quarter and was also rested for the final period but his able replacement Justin Tuason kept the Lakers in firm control. Big Papito Hersisia was also rested as Pádraig Lucey, Andrew Fitzgerald and Shane McCarthy continued to dominate the rebounds battle against a struggling Limerick outfit. In the end, Scotts Lakers had 23 points to spare with an outstanding overall team performance. They shot 10 from 21 three-point attempts and converted 12 from 14 free throws, and this result pushed them up to six wins and two losses on the league table. Team coach Cormac O’Donoghue was pleased with the great team performance. “It was good to get a win after two tough losses, especially with a huge cup game coming up this weekend,” he said. “Our defence was definitely better, which it needed to be after coughing up big scores the last two weekends. I felt it was a perfect response to a poor performance last week and we shared the ball much better. It was good that everyone got minutes before next weekend.” Scotts Lakers face a difficult National Cup clash away to Dublin Lions at Coláiste Bríde, Clondalkin this Saturday night (October 27) at 6.30pm.

Scotts Lakers:

Seán O’Brien (29), Papito Hersisia (22), Séamus Brosnan (9), Justin Tuason (8), Mark Greene (7), Cian Clernon (7), Dailian Mason (6), Andrew Fitzgerald (6), Pádraig Lucey (4), Shane McCarthy and James Murphy.

Limerick Celtics top scorers:

Turrell Morris (29), Fabio Hernandez (13) and Shane O’Connell (11)

McCarthy Bags Hat-Trick In FAI Junior Cup Mismatch Killarney Celtic cruised into the fourth round of the FAI Junior Cup with an extremely comfortable victory over Clare side Moher Celtic on Saturday last. Brian Spillane’s charges raced into an early lead and found themselves 5-0 up at the break. Things didn’t get much better for the visitors after the restart as the reigning Kerry champions added four more without reply. Talented young attacker Stephen McCarthy was the standout performer for the Celts as he bagged a hat-trick in a typically dynamic display. Podge O’Connor, who recently returned from the States, also found the scoresheet, as did veteran Stephen O’Mahony who joined the club from Tralee Celtic over the summer. Gary Keane, Wayne Sparling, Cathal O’Shea and Vukasin Ocic rounded out the scoring. Kerry and Legion stopper Brian Kelly started in goal. Celtic are one of just three Kerry teams who have advanced to the fourth round of the nation’s biggest tournament: Castleisland and Killorglin also progressed to the next phase with victories over Ballingarry (Desmond) and Tralee Dynamos last weekend. Killorglin defeated Dynamos 7-2. It’s a repeat of last year’s league final tonight in Celtic Park as Dingle Bay Rovers come to town.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm. Meanwhile, Killarney Athletic will be hoping to move up the table with victory over Tralee Dynamos on Sunday morning. Kick-off in Cahermoneen is at 11.30am.

WRC Briefs ...

Toyota WRC Atmosphere Completely Different To Previous Teams Toyota World Rally Championship signing Kris Meeke says the atmosphere at his new squad is “completely different” to his experience with any other team he has driven for previously. The former Citroen, Peugeot and Prodrive Mini WRC driver said four-time world champion team boss Tommi Makinen brings a different dimension to the team. Meeke has shied away from directly comparing the Yaris he tested last week and the Citroen C3 he drove until the French squad dropped him in May, but hinted Toyota offers a better working environment compared with what he knew at Citroen.

Last weekend saw the second round of the Heineken Cup take place and as per usual the script went right out the window. The three Irish provinces in the cup were all in action. Munster took on Gloucester at Thomond Park, Leinster travelled to the south of France to face Toulouse and Ulster were further north in Paris to play Racing. Saturday saw Limerick take centre stage as Munster hosted a weakened Gloucester. History is almost legendary between these sides as ‘The Miracle Match’ has entered rugby folklore. Back in 2003, Munster needed to win by exactly four clear tries and 27 points to progress. They scored their fourth try in the 80th minute and O’Gara converted to earn the much-coveted 27-point win. From stories of the Gloucester playbook being found in a taxi to everyone and their cat claiming to having been there, this fixture would always pique the interest! The sun shone in Thomond Park and though it was no miracle match, Munster needed to power on from the draw away to Exeter the previous weekend which was an excellent result so early in the cup. Joey Carbery provided another masterclass, which must surely satisfy Joe Schmidt ahead of the Autumn Internationals next month. Munster were slow enough to get off the mark but new signing Mike Haley, drafted in to replace Zebo, scored his first Munster try after 13 phases. Ex-England international and British media favourite Danny Cipriani earned a red card for a high tackle around the half-hour mark, opening the floodgates and effectively killing off the contest. Munster went on to score four more tries and earn the bonus point. But it came at a cost. Tommy O’Donnell must be the unluckiest player in rugby, having returned from injury only to break his leg. This probably puts paid to his World Cup ambitions. South African Arno Botha came on and was immense. Rhys Marshall also picked up a knock and was replaced by Kevin O’Byrne, whose aggression added a much-needed spark to the game. Carbery himself went on to score a try – his first in Europe - and earn the Man of the Match award to boot. However, the two stupid yellow cards in the last ten minutes for Munster allowed Gloucester back into the match and score two tries. In the end, Munster held on to win the game and stop the visitors from earning a bonus point, but the penalty count will again be a cause of concern for Van Graan and Peter O’Mahony. Munster now top the group. In a shock, Leinster lost by one point to Toulouse, their first defeat in 11 European Cup games. Ulster lost to Racing also, and now the focus switches to the PRO14 ahead of the Autumn Internationals. V

Kimi Raikkonen claimed his first Formula 1 win in five years in the US Grand Prix, as Lewis Hamilton’s 2018 title celebrations were delayed despite a Sebastian Vettel spin. Raikkonen overcame poleman Hamilton at the start and withstood late pressure from Max Verstappen, who started 18th, and the Mercedes driver to finally win and clinch his first success since 2013. “Thank you, f****** finally!” Raikkonen said as he crossed the line. But the 39-year-old Finn could not resist an ultra-dry riposte at the expense of Lewis Hamilton in the post race greenroom. He leaned across to speak to the Briton, who was frustrated in his bid to clinch a fifth title and finished third. “So, did you win the championship today?” asked the Ferrari man. The delivery was so deadpan that the Mercedes driver was caught off-guard and muttered only a brief response. Second place would have given Hamilton the title and he went wheel-towheel with Verstappen with three laps to go, but could not make it stick, eventually running off-track at Turn 18. Vettel’s fourth place, having passed Valtteri Bottas late on in his recovery drive, means Hamilton leads by 70 points with 75 on offer in the final three grand prix. Hamilton went into the Austin race needing to outscore Vettel by eight points to clinch a fifth championship.

Loeb Plays Down Expectations Ahead Of WRC Return In Spain Nine-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb will make his return to this sport for this weekend’s Rally of Spain - an event he won eight times in a row between 2005 and 2012, after which he retired from full-time WRC competition. The French ace, now 44, ran two WRC events earlier this year with the Citroen factory team in Mexico and Corsica, and although he showed front-running pace - particularly in Mexico, where he lead early on before his victory hopes were crushed by a punctured tyre - he wasn’t sure whether will be able to match the speed of Thierry Neuville, Sebastien Ogier and Ott Tanak, who will carry on their battle for the WRC title this weekend.

James Curran Vice-Captain of the Men’s Club will be taking over the Captaincy of our Club with effect from the AGM of The Men’s Club which will be held at the Clubhouse on Thursday of this week, the 25th of October, the meeting will be at 7.00 P.M. and will be immediately followed by the prize-giving of outstanding prizes for all Competitions at that time and James wishes that as many of our Members as possible will turn up on the night. James says that he is very much looking forward to his year as our Captain, and that his main hope is that the year will be a successful one for all of the Teams that will represent our Club in the National Inter-Club Competitions. James also wishes to thank most sincerely, our outgoing Captain

Derry McCarthy for nominating him as his Vice-Captain, and James wishes Derry and his wife Julie and their Family all the best for the future. The Competition on Sunday the 21/10/2018 was the Heineken sponsored singles V-Par Competition played on Mahony’s Point course. The Competition was played via 2 shotgun starts in an attempt to accommodate as manyCompetitors as possible, and this was rewarded by the massive turnout of 140 players. The Competition was played in very contrasting weather conditions with the early starters playing in almost constant pouring rain, and it was from this half that the eventual winner came from, Ian Cronin returned the incredible score of 6 UP, indeed Ian stood on his 17th tee-box at 8 UP only to lose the following 2 holes, and the next best score in the morning session was 3 UP. The afternoon session was played in glorious sunshine and the plethora of excellent scores reflected those weather conditions, but still none were able to match the excellence of Ian’s morning score. Full results were as follows, 1st Ian Cronin(6) 6 UP, 2nd Rory McCann(16) 5 UP, 3rd Joseph Sheehan(5) 4 UP, 4th Colm Cagney(7) 3 UP, 5th Padraig Burke(20) 3 UP, Best Gross Ian Spillane(3) 72, Cat.2 Kieran O’Connor(7) 2 UP, Cat.3 John Hickey(12) 2 UP, Cat.4 John Horgan(20) 1 UP. CSS was 70. Victor Mulcahy, PRO of the Men’s Club is retiring from the Men’s Committee with effect from the Men’s Club AGM on Thursday night next, so as this is my last report, then I would like to thank Derry McCarthy our Captain, and his predecessors Declan McCarthy and Liam Hartnett for the honour of being your nominated PRO for the past 3 years. I would also like to wish my successor Michael Maher every good wish, and in-coming Captain James Curran likewise, Gentlemen, please be assured of my continued support in all of your future endeavours.

Killarney Musical Society

Hello from the Hills and the Sound Of Music. Rehearsals continue under the direction of our Musical Director, Mr. Noel Lennon which are very enjoyable so far. We are thrilled with the sound of our heavenly chorus already. This Friday, October 26th. will see many of our members in Dunnes Stores, New St., Killarney for a bag packing fund raising event. As I’m sure you all are aware there are enormous costs involved in staging our annual musical, so if you have a few coins to spare we would be more than grateful to you as always if you can drop a couple in our box. You have been warned, so If you happen to see a few saintly ladies at the tills in Dunnes, don’t be alarmed, it’s only our heavenly crew. Have a great weekend everyone and Happy Halloween to you all.

Killarney RFC

SENIORS: Killarney 29 - 9 Ennis RFC. Last Sunday Killarney RFC took on Ennis in the third round of the Munster Junior League in perfect playing conditions at Aghadoe. A large crowd were in for a cracker of a match, though the half time score of 5 points to 9 in favour of the visitors didn’t bode well. The penalty count from Killarney was too high and ill discipline cost us in the first half. However, Paudie Sheahan crossed the white wash after some excellent passing to earn the home side’s first try. Mark Griffin was unlucky not to score a try of his own in the first half having run almost the length of the pitch only to be tackled at the very last minute. The discipline was much better in the second half and it must be said that Killarney’s scrum was a powerhouse and a joy to watch all day. Ger Moynihan crossed for his second try in as many games after some excellent pressure by the home side allowing Oisin O’Shea to convert. Connie O’Leary crossed for a try of his own and Killarney earned a penalty try for repeated infringements late in the match. A very well deserved win and well deserved man of the match display by Ger Moynihan. Captain Peter Kelly made a break from a ruck and was unlucky not to score. Another good day at Aghadoe. Thanks to Emjay Leslie and Isabella O’Leary who were our mascots for the day and to everyone who came to support the lads. MEMBERSHIPS: Memberships are now due for the season and must be paid by the end of October. Download the Clubify app or contact Liam Murphy on 087-4145662 for further details. On The Ball Dr Crokes GAA

SENIOR HURLING: Our season came to an end in Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday when we were beaten by Kilgarvan in the South Kerry Championship Final. Final score was Kilgarvan 2-18 Dr Crokes 0-12. This game was arranged at the end of a long period of uncertainty surrounding the arrangements for the championship resulting in an understandable loss of interest on the part of our players and of other clubs. The South Kerry Hurling Board must do better. Although our lads were handicapped by the absence of several regulars and the lack of games during the last couple of months they put up a brave show of defiance. Kilgarvan had already, as Kerry Intermediate Champions, qualified to represent Kerry in the Munster Junior Club Championship and clearly had put in a lot of work and were the better team on the day. We wish them well on their travels as they go forward to take on the Limerick Champions in two weeks’ time. Our best players on the day were veteran goalkeeper Timmy Hourigan, Shane Kavanagh, Colm O Cuiv, Jack Lenihan, Aaron Murphy and Rob Ryan. PROGRESSIVE 31: Progressive 31 will take place every Wednesday in Crokes Clubhouse. It will start at 8.00pm. You will need to bring money and a partner €5 per person.

Legion GAA

EK MINOR SEMI FINAL DIV 2: Legion 1-20 - Firies 0-08 Killarney Legion progressed to the East Kerry Championship Division 2 final with a well earned win over Firies. The game started with a minutes silence with officials and each team lining up side by side on the half way line in honour of our very own Niall McGillicuddy. Played in Direen in ideal conditions Legion were slow to start but once they got into their stride they took control of the game. Firies gave as good as they got but Legion always seemed to have the edge and took scores at the right times. At the final whistle the scoreline was more of reflection of the hard work and determined effort right up to the final whistle. EK CHAMPIONSHIP U-14 REPLAY: Legion 13pts Firies 1-8pts Very tight tough championship match. Both teams evenly matched but Legion dug deep in the second half and showed great character to win the game, well done to the management and lads. LOTTO: 4-8-19-26. Jackpot €3,300, draw Monday the 29th Oct Murphys Bar 9pm.

Mid-Kerry GAA

MID KERRY O’SULLIVAN FINAL: Cromane 0-17, Glenbeigh-Glencar 1-12 Cromane ended 2018 on a high with a two-point win today over neighbours Glenbeigh-Glencar in the Mid Kerry O’Sullivan Cup final in Killorglin. It was well-deserved as they dominated the second half at one stage opening up a four-point lead, 0-15 to 1-8 with 12 minutes left. Things got a bit nervy towards the end with referee Maurice Murphy playing over six minutes of injury time but the lads got the job done in the end. Apart from a poor patch of play in the middle of the first half when Glenbeigh-Glencar hit six points in a row they controlled matters and could have passed the 20-point mark but for some wayward second half shooting.
