Referendum Posters A Real Nuisance As the seemingly never-ending Eight Amendment debate rumbles on, one aspect of the whole chaotic scene is a particular source of annoyance: the ubiquitous campaign posters. People on both sides are slating the other’s billboards and public adverts, with the Yes campaign especially critical of the alleged misinformation being spread by the Pro Life brigade. But, whatever about the content, it’s the sheer volume of these posters that I have a gripe with. I recently travelled by road to Donegal and by the end of the trip I had the images seared into my brain. Foetus, YES, mother and child, Mary Lou McDonald, foetus YES, mother and child, Mary Lou McDonald. It was non-stop. I understand that it’s an important issue, but do we really need to be beaten over the head with it? One particular stretch of road near Kerry Airport has a row of posters that are so numerous and so close together that trying to read them would genuinely induce carsickness. As I mentioned last week, I’ll be voting ‘yes’ but you would have to seriously question the thinking behind

one of Sinn Féin’s ads. A big photo of Mary Lou McDonald’s head? As my father would say, what has that got to do with the price of milk? Maybe they’re trying to associate her face with the Yes campaign in the hopes that they’re on to a winner. It’s a bold move. And a strange one, too. Then you have the whole issue surrounding the illegal removal of these signs. Labour say they put up around 80 ‘yes’ posters in Limerick over the past few weeks, and roughly half of those had been taken down. “This is just purely trying to suppress democracy and I would go so far as to say it smacks of fascism,” said Jan O’Sullivan TD. Fianna Fáil TD for Waterford Mary Butler has also said that she had seen a “huge ‘no’ poster” torn down on the way to Dungarvan over the weekend. “They cost a lot of money to put up. The tearing down of posters whether they are Yes or No is obviously not the right way to deal with this issue, people are entitled to put up their posters,” she said. Whatever about fascism or the law, the mysterious poster bandits might do us all a favour and take down the rest of them as well.

Pedestrian Crossings At Roundabouts

Can anyone tell me the logic behind placing pedestrian crossings directly after roundabouts? It’s a genuine question that has perplexed me for a while now. Surely it’s dangerous? We seem to have quite a few in Killarney; in fact, there’s a very prominent one quite close to my home. The roundabout at Cleeney is one of the biggest in town, connecting the Rock Road, Hans Liebherr Road, the Tralee Road and the bypass. Surrounded on all sides by the Killarney Court Hotel, Bowler’s, the Reeks, Lidl and a large housing estate, the area certainly sees a lot of traffic – both road and pedestrian. I often walk up to the Legion and Celtic pitches through the estate, which means I have to cross the bypass. You’d be half afraid of your life. Drivers naturally accelerate out of the roundabout and then ei-

ther stop abruptly when they see the zebra crossing, or simply decide it’s safer to continue through rather than halt and risk being rear-ended. It must be especially stressful for the elderly, people with disabilities and parents with young children. Would it be better to position the crossing another 50 metres up the road? Or would we be too lazy to take that kind of detour? To be honest, if it was quiet, I probably would. But if it was busy, and as lazy as I am, I’d rather walk an extra 100 metres than get mowed down by a 4x4. If people are going to take the more direct route even if there isn’t a pedestrian crossing, I suppose you run the risk of making the situation more dangerous. A footbridge would take the cars completely out of the equation.

Darkness Into Light

Nathan’s Walk To Be Launched On Wednesday The launch of this year’s Walking for Nathan Darkness Into Light takes place on Wednesday, May 2 at 7.45pm in Reidy’s of Main Street. The walk, a fundraiser for Pieta House, is dedicated to the memory of Killarney boy Nathan O’Carroll who committed suicide at the age of 14 back in 2007. His parents Marie and Denis have put countless hours into organising the walk, which has become one of the most successful events of its kind in the entire country. An incredible sum of €41,000 was raised last year alone. While registration is online this year, it will be possible to register in Reidy’s on the launch night and all are welcome. Get along and sign up if you can. It’s a truly worthy cause.

Locals Rejoice As Problem Roads Finally Fixed Words: Adam Moynihan

PAGE SIX

Locals Have Had Their Fill Of Potholes Words: Adam Moynihan There was cause for celebration in Killarney this week as the council confirmed that the problem roads by the Hahah would finally be repaired, after a prolonged period of inaction on the issue. The state of the surfaces on East Avenue Road, the Hahah, and the start of Mission Road have long been a major cause of concern for motorists in the town. The potholes and bumps were inconvenient and potentially dangerous, not to mind unsightly, so news of the resurfacing has been greeted with widespread acclaim. Works were strategically scheduled to take place overnight on Wednesday, Thursday and tonight to limit the inconvenience to locals and tourists alike. As

our pictures show, the road outside the Plaza and Town Hall and up Main Street as far as the junction with Plunkett Street have also been revamped. Speaking to Killarney Advertiser, the Mayor of Killarney, Niall Kelleher, said he was “delighted it’s finally getting sorted”. “It’s very important as the tourist season begins to have our roads in a proper state,” he added. We raised this issue here at the Killarney Advertiser back in March and it’s great to see the council taking such positive action to improve the state of our infrastructure. We look forward to seeing the finished product. Congratulations to all involved.

Mayor Niall Kelleher has this week announced details of a local improvemen t scheme that will afford people the opportunity to apply for grants to improve their private roads. This will, of course, come as welcome news to people with potholes on their private roadways, and the council certainly deserve credit for re-introducing this worthy scheme after an 11-year absence, but many vexed locals have expressed concerns that plenty of potholes on public roads in the town itself remain unfilled. The area around the cinema, the Hahah, Mission Road and East Avenue Road is a particular black spot in terms of pesky potholes and little appears to have been done to address this very pressing issue. Killarney natives who frequently pass through this busy part of town have long complained

about the state of the roads here and, although work has recently been carried out elsewhere in town (such as at the Port Road and Plunkett Street, for instance), these particular streets seem to have been left behind. With a number of hotels, restaurants, cafés and amenities – not least the ever popular jaunting cars – situated nearby, the area is a hotbed for tourists and we are certainly not putting our best foot forward by ignoring these unsightly and potentially dangerous potholes. Every year as we re-enter the busy tourist season, residents and business owners alike make a conscientious effort to show Killarney in its best possible light. The council also do great work in this regard, but surely this special area of town deserves particular – and urgent - attention?

Plunkett Street To Close At 7pm Nightly

Last August’s move to pedestrianis e Plunkett Street proved popular with locals and tourists alike and the practice is set to return over the coming months, it has been revealed A new plan for the quaint, one-way street, which was confirmed at a council meeting on Wednesday, will see it shut to traffic permanently from 7pm to 7am from April 19. It will also be pedestrianised on a trial basis between 11am and 7pm from March 31 to April 9, May 11 to May 21 and again from June 29 to September 3. Speaking to the Advertiser yesterday, Mayor Niall Kelleher said the move, which was put forward by John Joe

Culloty and seconded by Michael Gleeson, passed by a majority 7-1. “The night-time pedestrianisation is an exceptionally positive move that will benefit the people and the town of Killarney,” he said. He also explained that the trial periods were specifically chosen to test the new set-up out during the school term, when school was out, and over the busy summer period. Fears have been expressed in the past by business owners that closing Plunkett Street would be detrimental to trade but the mayor said the majority of the feedback so far has been positive.

Solution In Sight For Glenflesk Flood Victims

They have been victims of extreme flooding for years but there might finally be some respite on the horizon for the people of Glenflesk. Major plans, which will include the clearance of vegetation along 5.6km of the Flesk River, have just this week been given the go ahead. It is hoped that the works will alleviate pressure on the river and prevent further serious flooding in the area. As our pictures show, the area in question has been subjected to some of the worst flooding seen in the entire county. The works, which will take place between Loo Bridge and Curreal, are expected to cost around €99,000 and the application also includes a includes a treatment programme for the eradication of Japanese Knotweed over a three to four year period. Kerry County Council engineer Gerry Riordan Senior Engi-

neer will give an update at the Killarney MD meeting next Tuesday on other measures being examined with a limited number of individual property owners, where additional flood protection measures may be required, having regard to recent flooding events. These are works that may be funded under another programme managed by the OPW and could provide further resilience to the risk of flooding. This issue has been highlighted in the Killarney Advertiser many times before so it’s fantastic to see some progress being made. Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher, who himself made numerous representations on the issue, welcomed the news. “I’m delighted to receive confirmation of this application which will be welcome news for many residents in Glenflesk prone to numerous flooding incidents in the last few years,” he said.

TOWNTALK No CCTV System For Killarney… For Now Proposals for a new CCTV scheme in Killarney have been shelved due to concerns raised with the Data Protection Commissioner regarding access to the material recorded. Cameras were to be put in place in the town centre as well in Ballyspillane but it’s understood that there will be no progress on the matter until this data issue is resolved.

A complaint from a County Meath group about the day-to-day operators of the CCTV and controls placed upon them has forced the government to step in and suspend all proposed schemes nationwide. The complaint is expected to be dealt with by the third quarter of this year, after which point the future of Killarney’s CCTV system will be reviewed.

Sinéad’s Rise The “Fastest In History Of Gleneagle Group” The Brehon in Killarney has appointed a new General Manager. Sinéad McCarthy, a native of Drimoleague in West Cork, joined the team at The Brehon in 2014 and had since progressed through the ranks as Food and Beverage Manager, Operations Manager and Interim General Manager before being promoted to the senior role of General Manager earlier this month. “Sinéad has a natural flair for hospitality, this combined with her drive, diligence and dedication to her work has resulted in her progressing though the ranks faster than any manager in the history of The Gleneagle Group,” said Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of The Gleneagle Group. “We wish her well in her new role.” Sinéad studied hospitality management in CIT and GMIT and more recently, received a Higher Diploma in Human Resources from University College Cork. Pri-

or to joining the team at The Brehon, she worked at Carton House Resort and Spa and also at Dublin’s Gibson Hotel. In 2016, she was awarded Hospitality Manager of the Year in the food and beverage category from the Irish Hospitality Institute. The panel of judges commended her hard work, leadership skills and her ability to implement strategies to achieve revenue growth. She is a member of SKAL Kerry and is also an advisor to the Killarney Tidy Towns Committee on green hospitality. “I am honoured to have been promoted to the role of General Manager, The Brehon is a truly unique hotel where the emphasis is on delivering exceptional customer service in exceptional surroundings,” she said. “I love working in the hospitality industry and have learnt a great deal in my various roles. I look forward to working with the team to deliver the best in class experiences that our customers expect.”

Cycle Lanes Unfit For Purpose Many observers have commented recently on the shoddy state of some of the cycle lanes at various locations around Killarney. In some instances, lanes have become overgrown with grass and other plants and rubbish has also been cited as a major problem for cyclists trying to use the pathways. Lissivigeen (pictured) is one such example where cyclists have no choice but to abandon the cycle lane and join traffic on the main road. There have been conflicting suggestions regarding the cause of the problem. Some say it’s simply a case of the lanes not being maintained correctly, but others have claimed that they wouldn’t be overgrown in the first place if

they were being used enough (the implication being that cyclists are choosing to cycle on the road rather than stay in their lane). Whatever the cause, stretches of certain cycle lanes are currently unusable at the moment. The cyclists who do genuinely want to use them have no choice but venture out onto main roads amongst the traffic. This naturally increases the likelihood of an accident happening and in a collision between a car and a bike, the car will always win. For the safety of our cyclists, especially at this time of year when people preparing for the Ring of Kerry, it’s imperative that these cycle lanes are clear and safe to use.

Thomas Loses Over 3 Stone In Operation Transformation

The Chatroom

Killarney Valley Vintage & Classic Club This week in The Chatroom we went on location to meet Tom Leslie and Pat O’Sullivan from Killarney Valley Vintage & Classic Club to chat about their next restoration project. You might remember last year that the club did an amazing job restoring a battered old 1968 Massey Ferguson MF135 to its former glory. Tickets were sold to win the like-new tractor and €48,500 was raised for local charities! Well, this year the club is at it again. This time they’ve taken

on a 1989 Land Rover Defender which has been off the road for several years and are in the process of restoring it to brand newlike condition. Tom and Pat tell us all about this new ambitious project and we even get a sneak peek at how the project is progressing and what charities will benefit this year. You can catch this latest edition of The Chatroom on Friday night at 9pm on our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie or on our Facebook page. Check it out!

Thomas O’Leary of Killarney was the big winner (or should that be ‘loser’?) in the Pat Sheehan Health & Fitness Operation Transformation as he lost an incredible 3st 2lbs in just 12 weeks. To put that into context, that’s 20% of his starting body weight. Congratulations to Tom who won a two night stay with dinner on one night in the Sneem Hotel Co Kerry. The 2nd place prize - two months membership for Club Vitae Leisure Centre - went to Christine O’Sullivan with an impressive loss of 1st 8.5lbs (13.88% of her starting body weight). 3rd prize was a draw for everyone who finished the 12-week weight loss program. Jer Leary was the lucky person drawn out of the hat and he won one month’s membership for Club Vitae Leisure Centre. Pat’s next Operation Transformation won’t be until September 2018 but if you can’t wait until then you can do your own private one-to-one 12-week weight loss program at Club Vitae or at Pat’s second office, The Loft Fitness Studio in Millstreet. Acclaimed Drummer Dave To Celebrate Big 7-0

Legendary drummer Dave Usher (second left).

Legendary drummer and Killarney resident Dave Usher is celebrating his 70th birthday on Tuesday, May 1 from 9.30pm in Courtney’s Bar and a great night of music is on the cards. Dave, who was born in Malaya to an Irish mother and Scottish father, got into music at a young age. “My dad was a mandolin player,” he explained. “I started playing the piano when I was seven and started on the drums when I was eight. I joined my first band when I was twelve and I started making money – I was earning more money than my dad!” Over the course of a remarkable career, Dave played with a whole host of top musicians and was part of the group called Wild Flowers, who actually penned

the classic Free hit ‘All Right Now’ in 1967. He subsequently moved to London and rubbed shoulders with some very well-known stars. “I met David Bowie,” Dave recalls. “He was a funny man. Half the stuff written about him isn’t completely true. He was a nice man, just a bit weird that was all. I toured with him on the Spiders from Mars tour.” Dave is still very active in the music business and performs with acclaimed groups Texas Heart and Sin-Iad, as well as with world famous musician Liam O’Connor. “I ain’t gonna stop playing,” he says. “They’ll have to bury me with my drums!” Texas Heart will be performing on the night and it promises to be a great show to honour a great music man.

Hospitality

Local Hoteliers Urged To Support Push For National Tidy Towns Title

Local hoteliers have been asked for their support to allow Killarney to challenge for the Tidy Towns National Winners Title, with a little help from GreenHospitality.ie. The aim is to improve the town’s score in the Sustainable Waste and Resource Management category and Green Hospitality have been solicited to run their Green Destination Programme in Killarney. This programme, which will take a few years to achieve, will require a substantial proportion of the hospitality businesses within Killarney to be able to demonstrate good environmental practices. GreenHospitality.ie has programmes for both hotels and smaller hospitality businesses. Maurice Bergin from GreenHospitality.ie will be running a briefing on Tuesday, May 1 from 9.30am to 12.30pm in The Brehon Hotel and local hoteliers have been urged to attend. Maurice will also outline some major cost saving opportunities that go hand in hand with resource efficiency – especially on the energy side - and will update attendees with current Lighting Grant Aid availability and the forthcoming Renewable Heating Support Scheme which could cut heating/hot water costs by up to 100%.

Views On The News A Bit Of Horse Sense Required

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

In October 2016, a traffic management study commissioned by Kerry County Council at a cost of just shy of €40,000 including VAT was undertaken. The brief was to cope with existing traffic, to plan for future traffic, to solve the parking problems and to promote “sustainable” travel – Shank’s mare in other words, going by bike, by foot - though the traditional Killarney horse and carriage came under an amount of criticism by the consultants. Few, if any, of its more sensible recommendations of the traffic plan have been implemented. And I say more sensible, because one or two of the suggestions, such as a reintroduction of a kind of Peter’s pence by putting charges on the Cathedral car park (the town, as far as I know, does not own the car park) and parking in Fossa, were downright bizarre. Cllr Donal Grady at the latest meeting of the JPC – the Joint Policing Committee where gardaí report to the public – asked that two gardaí be put on traffic duty, not just for the races or Munster Finals, but on a daily basis during the season to try to handle the traffic this summer. “We are a very, very busy town. Someone must be on the beat directing traffic this summer. Put two people in black spots where traffic is building up,” he appealed to Kerry Chief Supt Tom Myers. Alongside the chief garda at the top table was the head of traffic division Inspector Tony Sugrue, who it has to be said is au fait with tourism in his home town.

Traffic is one of the main complaints by tourists in Killarney and it is not being addressed. A three-minute journey takes 14 minutes and more. There is nowhere to park. The consultants came out strongly against the jarveys, seeing them as a problem. Their idea was to relocate altogether the jarveys away from the Hahah - known now as the Plaza Stand. “It is recommended that there would be no increase in licences for jarveys. It would be desirable to relocate the town centre jarvey base away from the Hahah to improve traffic circulation around the town. The option of relocating the base to an alternative location, adjacent to the town, with regulated access and egress from the public road should be considered. Appropriate pedestrian connectivity to the town would be required,” Malachy Walsh consultants said. “Hahah indeed,” went the jarveys! The traffic study got little attention. To give Cllr Maura Healy-Rae credit, she did pick up on the recommendation to move the jarvey base away from the Hahhah to improve traffic circulation. She said it was the opposite to desirable. “The jarveys are one of Killarney’s biggest tourist attractions and are one of the things that make Killarney unique. It is hugely important for easy access for visitors that the jarveys are in the town,” she said. Jarveys should not be pushed out of town, she added. Last week I went out to speak to tourists in Killarney in the wake of the accident in the Gap of Dunloe. Jarveys are “part of the charm” of Killarney, an

American couple who had just got off a jarvey carriage in the stand told me. Coincidentally, they too were from Arizona. They were mightily pleased with their hour-long trip with jarvey Mike Griffin and his glistening horse Meika. Pat Joy of the 15-member Killarney Horse & Carriage Tours co-operative has called for more understanding of what it is to manage horses in traffic and in the Demesne, whose roads were built for horses, by the way. He has also called for more consultation too from the town managers and the managers of the National Park. The horse and carriage co-operative, in its short existence, has been awarded a gold medal for its above 90 per cent above satisfaction rating from tourists with CIE Tours. An obvious solution and one which the consultants did not entertain was to allow the carriages to enter the National Park opposite the Plaza, he thinks. Jarveys in Killarney are not given notice of major events that are taking place in the Park, so they have to manage in among hundreds of walkers and runners and cycling groups, instead of being able to come to an arrangement to suit everyone. There is also a lack of common sense when it comes to horses and there is little appreciation of a horse and carriage and what it takes to manage it. The jarveys don’t feel they own the National Nark, he stresses. But some people don’t seem to have any common sense. They leave their dogs off the leash in the National Park, they walk in the middle of the road and a small number, including a few locals, will always “hold the road” forcing the horse and carriage to anchor or negotiate a way around them. A one-way system for bikes, walkers and the whole lot would help. Out on the road where jarveys are among the cars and buses, courtesy and understanding of horses and carriages depends on who you meet. “English people are great people to meet on the road. They are a gift to meet. It’s the law in England to educate the driver about horses and all road users,” Pat says. English bus drivers will slow down, understanding the challenges of horses and carriages. Because of the parking problems in the town, tourists don’t come in during the daytime so most jarvey business now is through agents and tours. And this is something I have noticed myself – restaurants in Killarney at lunchtime are never that busy. It is high time for Killarney town management to take the bit in its mouth with traffic management this summer - and maybe it’s time we all got “a bit” of horse sense.

May 13 Start Date For The Killarney Races Killarney Races kicks off its Summer Racing Season on Sunday, May 13 to Tuesday 15, offering three days of the very best of Festival Racing. Sunday and Monday are both National Hunt cards, whilst Tuesday is an all-flat card. Sales/Marketing Manager of Killarney Racecourse, Peter O’Reilly, said: “We eagerly await the opening day of our 2018 racing season and Sunday, May 13 promises to be an action-packed opening with the very best of National Hunt racing and many more attractions which should ensure a great day out for all.” The first race on Sunday is at 1.20pm and the feature race on the day is the Grade B Redweld Stables Handicap Hurdle with a prize fund of €50,000. Monday is ‘Killarney National Night’ with the running of the Laurels Pub & Restaurant Killarney National over an extended

three miles and two furlongs. Last year’s race was won by Auvergant in the familiar colours of JP McManus. JP will this year be trying to make it three in a row, having won the last two runnings of the event. We look forward to another strong renewal with a prize fund of €40,000 up for grabs. Monday also features the An Ríocht Chase with last year’s winner Ballycasey hoping to recapture his crown. First race Monday is off at 5.05pm. Tuesday is a flat card and the first race is off at 5.40pm. The feature race is the EBF Median Auction Fillies Race, won last year by Bumbasina for the Willie McCreery yard. With almost €400,000 prize money on offer over the three days it promises to be a great racing festival. Restaurant and social packages are still Gillian Monaghan (new lead dancer with Celtic Steps) and Gerard Coughlan available on all three days. 7 Fathers & Sons (And One Daughter) Named In Rally Field

The list of entrants for this year’s Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes has been revealed and a host of familiar faces have confirmed their attendance at the legendary Killarney event. Heading the international entry list is last year’s winner, Sam Moffett from Monaghan. Moffett will start in the top slot alongside local co-driver Noel O’Sullivan. Declan Boyle, a former leader of the Rally of the Lakes, will start in second and Irish Tarmac Championship leader Josh Moffett, who recently had backto-back wins on both the West Cork and Easter Stages Rallies, is up next in his Ford Fiesta. Manus Kelly and Derek McGarrity will follow in their Subarus. Rob Duggan (co-driver Tara Duggan) is the top-seeded Kerry driver (15), while Kevin O’Donoghue, Charlie Hickey and Tadhg O’Sullivan all appear in the top 30. There are 101 crews in total in the main field with a further 27 taking part in the juniors section. Interestingly, there are seven fathers and sons or daughters participating in this year’s Rally of the Lakes: Kevin and Colin O’Donoghue, Charlie and Johnny Hickey, Joe and Brian Connolly, Ken and Keith Lyons, Noel O’Sullivan Senior and Junior, Kieran and Cormac Phelan, Denis and Ryan O’Brien and Philip McKibbin and his daughter Lynn. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Clerk of Course Dermot Healy confirmed that the Rally of the Lakes will be availing of Liebherr’s brand new 477-space car park at Lackabane in Fossa, which he says will be a “huge bonus”.

Dermot also said preparations are going well for the event. “Everything is going pretty good,” he confirmed. “Programmes will be on sale this weekend and all is good to go.” Speaking directly to motorsport fans who are looking forward to next weekend, the COC had a clear message. “Be safe and enjoy the rally. Obey the marshals and obey the gardaí. A safe rally is my priority – for both spectators and competitors alike.” The three-day event will begin with a ceremonial start in Killarney’s town centre at 7pm on Friday May 4 with the Rally itself beginning the following morning at the iconic Molls Gap. Next it’s the Tim Healy Pass and centralised service in Castletownbere Pier. Then it’s time to head out on the famous stages of Cods Head and Ardgroom with a repeat run over

the Healy Pass and into service for a break. Cods Head and Ardgroom are repeated and it’s a blast through the Kilmakilloge Harbour Stage to finish off the day. Sunday Morning starts with Molls Gap once again, followed by the mountainous Beallaghbeama Pass, then into service at Liebherr. This loop of Molls Gap and Beallaghbeama Pass is repeated with the inclusion of a new version of the fast flowing Shanera Stage called Brook Hill. It’s into service once again before heading out to the Spectator-friendly loop of Rossanean, Brook Hill and Rossanean again as the final stage. The crews will arrive back to the finishing ramp at the Rally Head Quarters, The Gleneagle Hotel, at 5.30pm for celebrations and champagne.

Kilcummin Models Raise Funds For Gym Pics: Dylan Clifford

Fashion Show

Over 400 people turned up on last Thursday evening to the Great Southern for the Kilcummin National School designer fashion event, where some of the top names in Munster showcased their new designs for Summer 2018. The show, run by the Norma O’Donoghue Model agency, was a fundraiser for the Kilcummin National School new gym, which is in the closing stages of its development with only the floor to complete. Aided by local models such as Seán O’Leary, Fr Eamon Mulvihill and Brendan Kealy - with a little help from Deputy Michael Healy-Rae - the night provided plenty of light entertainment and memorable moments for those present. Meanwhile, for local lady Kathleen Ryan it was especially memorable when she won the

Keanes Jewellers Best-Dressed prize. During the interval, the crowd were entertained by champion dancer and local girl Caoimhe O’Halloran as well as the local Kilcummin CCE and School band. Thanking those who attended, Principal Gillian Sheehan highlighted the organising committee who she said put their lives on hold over the last three months. “Nobody will ever be able to repay the time and efforts that they put in but on behalf of the school I thank them sincerely for what they have done,” she said. Another highlight of the evening was the golden ticket draw in which 50 people won fantastic prizes from hotel breaks to meals in the top local restaurants in Killarney. “I want to thank them for their great generosity and I urge you to support them, if you are given the chance at some stage.”

Kingdom Agri Trade Show Not To Be Missed

The first ever Kingdom Agri Trade Show takes place in Killarney Racecourse from 2-5pm this Sunday and the message from Bank of Ireland is that they’re here to help and support farmers. “This event is free and open to everyone, not just Bank of Ireland customers,” says Hugh Gleeson, Manager of Bank of Ireland, South Kerry. “We’ve organised it with the farming community in mind, however all members of the general public are welcome too.” The racecourse will be divided into different zones on Sunday afternoon. The machinery zones will feature trade stands from different machinery companies showcasing the latest equipment, the agri-business zone will have trade stands from various businesses that provide services to the farming community. The vintage zone, meanwhile, will have displays of old vehicles and machinery from bygone times. There’s also something for the little ones. You’ll find children’s games and activities, Disney charac-

ters, face painters and stalls offering ice cream and candy floss the kids’ zone. Be sure to check out the food zone and the music zone too, as well as the information and advice zone showcasing the services of companies such as agri-consultants. “We will also have a very interesting panel discussion taking place in the information and advice zone at 3pm,” says Hugh Gleeson. “Aisling O’Brien from Radio Kerry will chair a discussion, the theme- ‘the future of farming’. The other speakers will include Pat Murphy from Kerry Agri Business, Dan O’Connor from TF Casey, Michael Brosnan from IFAC, Eugene O’Doherty from Teagasc and Co. and Pat Byrnes from Bank of Ireland.” Celebrity guest Daithí ó Sé will also be in attendance as will some members of the Kerry senior football team. This event is the first of its kind to take place in Kerry but Hugh hopes for it will continue into the future. “We see it as a way of engaging with the farming community here in Kerry and finding out just what it is that we can do to support them.”

Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder

A Pint of Plain & A Ball Of Malt Last Thursday evening, Offaly’s legendary whiskey, Tullamore DEW, descended upon Killarney. At Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder, Brand Ambassador Kevin Piggott conducted a DEW and Brew tasting, pairing three craft beers with three Tullamore DEW whiskeys. The evening commenced with a Tullamore DEW original, which was paired with Carlow-based brewery O’Haras Red Ale. Think roasted nuts and caramel flavours. The whiskey and beer enthusiasts present were then introduced to the Tullamore DEW 14-Year-Old, which was to be complemented by the O’Haras Hop Session, a delightfully citrusy and fragrant pairing. The last pairing was notably the heaviest, the Tullamore DEW 12-Year-Old with Scottish brewery

Innis & Gunn Tullamore DEW barrel-aged stout. The rich, chocolaty notes of the beer harmonised perfectly with the caramel and dark chocolate flavours of the whiskey. In between, Kevin narrated Irish boilermaker stories and shared toasts from around the world. After the last pairing and plenty of good humour, Kevin brought out a Tullamore DEW-branded bag and pulled out a bottle of Tullamore DEW Black 43 – a pot still whiskey finished in Oloroso Sherry Casks that is no longer produced. This whiskey had great body, lots of character and was the perfect way to round off our monthly tasting. Next on the bar’s calendar will be a Teeling tasting at the end of May, so make sure you stay tuned for more information. Sláinte!

Sem Boys Take To Stage With Liam & Christy Over 100 talented young music lovers took to the stage for the annual St Brendan’s College concert last week - with a little help from world famous Killarney musician Liam O’Connor and Aslan frontman Christy Dignam. This was the fifth instalment of the intimate gig, which takes place yearly in the school chapel, and the audience were treated to quite a show as Christy, Liam and the students belted out the classics. Christy serenaded the crowd with his versions of Ave Maria, The Green Fields of France and, of course, Aslan’s 1993 smash hit, Crazy World. Irish rugby legend Mick Galwey also made an appearance as a special guest speaker on the night and he also showed his musical prowess with a fine rendition of The Contender. The students were put through their paces by their music teacher Mish O’Donoghue in the run-up to the event with Liam himself also dropping by on a weekly basis to assist the lads in their preparations.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Kuwait Expels Philippine Ambassador Following ‘Maid Rescues’ The Philippines has demanded an explanation for Kuwait’s decision to expel its ambassador amid a dispute over the treatment of domestic workers. The two nations have been attempting to resolve the dispute since February, when the body of a murdered Filipina maid was discovered in Kuwait. But last week videos emerged showing embassy staff “rescuing” Filipinos allegedly abused by their employers. Kuwait condemned the “violation of its laws” and told the ambassador to leave. Four Filipinos hired by the embassy were also arrested by Kuwaiti police and arrest warrants issued against three diplomatic personnel, according to the Philippines. Some 260,000 Filipinos work in Kuwait, two-thirds of them as domestic

helpers. Last Saturday, the Philippine foreign ministry published two video clips said to show teams from the embassy in Kuwait carrying out “rescues” of Filipino domestic workers. In one, a woman is seen running from a block of flats and being helped into a waiting car by a man. On Wednesday, the Kuwaiti foreign ministry announced it had declared Philippine ambassador Renato Pedro Villa persona non grata and asked him to leave the country within a week. A statement accused Philippine “embassy staff and others” of “smuggling Filipino maids in flagrant violation of Kuwait’s laws and international diplomatic rules”. It also vowed to “chase down” those responsible and put them on trial.

Nestlé Pulls ‘Sexist’ Moroccan Ads The Swiss food giant Nestlé has cancelled an online publicity campaign in Morocco after it was branded sexist on social media. The mini-series, titled I Want to Get Married, featured five young women competing to win a husband by impressing his mother. The first episode saw the would-be brides asked to make a dessert using Nestlé condensed milk. Nestlé says it “sincerely

regrets” that the content offended some viewers. A number of Moroccans had lambasted the campaign, saying it was degrading and outdated to pick a wife based on her cooking skills. The company said it was “strongly committed to equality and diversity, and to treating everyone with respect”, and that its advertising “should always live up to these values”.

Cork Airport Changes Name Of Main Runway

Trump Admits Cohen Was His Lawyer In Stormy Daniels Matter Donald Trump admitted on Thursday that lawyer Michael Cohen represented him in the “crazy Stormy Daniels deal” – despite having previously denied knowing about a $130,000 hush payment paid by his lawyer to the adult film star, who claims to have had sex with him. “As a percentage of my overall legal work, [he did] a tiny, tiny little fraction,” the US president said of Cohen. “But Michael represents me like with this crazy Stormy Daniels deal.” Daniels sued last month to release herself from a non-disclosure agreement that she signed in 2016, arguing that it was void because Trump never signed it. In April, Trump was asked by reporters on Air Force One if he knew about the payment Cohen says he made. He replied: “No.” When asked why Cohen

Never fails to entertain

made the payment, Trump said: “You’ll have to ask Michael Cohen. Michael is my attorney. You’ll have to ask Michael.” On Thursday, he distanced himself from Cohen, whose office, apartment and hotel room were raided by FBI officials earlier this month. “Michael is a businessman. It doesn’t have to do with me… He also practices law I would say the big thing is his business,” Trump told Fox News. He added: “I have many attorneys. Sadly I have so many attorneys you wouldn’t believe it.” The concession came during a wide-ranging telephone interview on Fox & Friends, one of Trump’s favorite news shows, in which the president unloaded on a litany of grievances – old and new – that ranged from the “witch-hunt” Russia investigation to the accusation that Hillary Clinton had received a question in advance of a presidential debate in 2016.

Cork Airport has renamed its runway to adapt to changes to the Earth’s magnetic poles. The runway formerly known was 17/35 will now be called 16/34, because of shifts in the magnetic poles since the runway was first designated in 1961. The new name refers to the runway’s latest magnetic headings, which stand at 164°M and 344°M, respectively. Small changes occur in the Earth’s magnetic fields on a regular basis, and Cork is not the first air-

port that’s needed to change the pattern of its runway as the planet’s magnetic field is continuously shifting. It’s important because the aviation industry heavily relies on magnetic compasses for navigation, alongside GPS instruments. Cork has changed it so that the runway’s name will coincide with what a pilot will see on their navigational instruments when approaching for a landing or taking off. Pic: Brian Lougheed

Killarney Bride-To-Be 800-Year-Old Heart Of St Laurence Has A Royal Problem Recovered By Gardaí

A Killarney bride-to-be got a major surprise when details of the Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were announced: it’s scheduled to take place at exactly the same time as her own ceremony just 20 minutes down the road. On May 19, Celé Brits from Aghadoe will marry her partner, Lawrence Mason, in Burnham, Berkshire, which is a short distance from Winsdor. Celé, who attended the Holy Cross Mercy and ISK before going to university in London, is hopeful that her plans won’t be too badly affected by Harry and Meghan’s slightly larger do, although upwards of 100,000 people are expected to line the route between the two villages.

An 800-year-old religious relic, which was stolen from Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin six years ago, has been recovered by gardaí. What is believed to be the heart of St Laurence O’Toole, the patron saint of the Dublin diocese, was found undamaged following an intelligence-led investigation and a search in the Phoenix Park. The Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Michael Jackson, welcomed the discovery of the relic, which he says has no economic value, but is a priceless treasure that links the cathedral with its founding father. Assistant Garda Commissioner Pat Leahy, who is in charge of policing Dublin, will hand over the relic to the Archbishop at a service in Christ Church this evening. The heart was stolen on March 12, 2012 by a thief who is believed to have hidden overnight in the cathedral. It was stolen from inside an iron-barred case. The thief also lit two peace candles on the Trinity altar

in the cathedral before he left. St Laurence O’Toole became Archbishop of Dublin in 1161 and was consecrated the following year at Christ Church Cathedral, but died in northern France in 1180. His body was buried in Normandy but his heart was returned to Ireland and had been on display in the Chapel of St Laud in the cathedral until it was stolen.

Irish Liverpool Fan Still In Critical Condition Lightning Hits Indian State 36,749 Times In 13 Hours

Two Italian men have been charged in connection with an attack on an Irish man before Liverpool’s Champions League match with Roma, Merseyside Police have said. Liverpool supporter Seán Cox, a 53-yearold father of three from Dunboyne, Co Meath, suffered serious head injuries after being assaulted outside Anfield stadium on Tuesday. In a statement, the force said: “We can confirm that detectives have charged two Italian men following an incident in Anfield on Tuesday, April 24 in which a 53-year-old man was seriously injured. 20-year-old Filippo Lombardi was charged with violent disorder and wounding/inflict grievous bodily harm. 29-yearold Daniele Sciusco was charged with violent disorder. Both men have been kept in custody to appear at South Sefton Magistrates Court this morning, Thursday, April 26. The victim remains in hospital in a critical condition at

Walton Neurological Centre.” Sporadic trouble broke out in the city centre before the game, and as more than 50,000 fans descended on Anfield, including around 5,000 fans from Italy. Fighting erupted near The Albert pub close to the ground shortly before kick-off, where it is believed Mr Cox was hit with a belt and fell to the ground. Police made nine arrests before and after the game, for offences including affray, assault, possession of offensive weapons, possession of a controlled drug, criminal damage and being drunk and disorderly.

The southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh recorded 36,749 lightning strikes in just a 13-hour period on Tuesday, officials say. The number is unusually high and the result of “extreme weather patterns”, according to the state disaster management authority. Nine people, including a nine-year-old girl, have been killed in the state by lightning strikes since Tuesday. Lightning strikes are common in India during heavy monsoon rains. The season typically begins in June and

lasts until September. However, this particular region usually sees increased lightning activity before the monsoon begins, Kishan Sanku, who runs the state emergency operation centre, told the BBC. Tuesday’s bout of lightning is being considered an anomaly because data from last year shows that there were some 30,000 lighting strikes throughout the entire month of May in the same region. Some scientists believe that global warming will significantly increase the frequency of lightning strikes.

Kyrgyz Mayor Tours City In Fake Beard The mayor of Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek says that he sometimes tours the city in disguise so that he can see people’s problems first-hand. Albek Ibraimov told local media that he changes into old clothes and wears a false beard so that the locals

don’t recognise him, the Fergana news agency reports. “I dress in old clothes, so that no one will know,” he said, “I wear a beard, take off my tie [and] I go and look, and see how things actually are.”

He made the claim while discussing a major fire that destroyed part of the city’s largest market, Osh Bazaar, on 13 April. It has been suggested that his remarks were intended to show locals that he’s not out of touch with the traders who are struggling in its aftermath.

Welcome

W

Welcome to April’s Home and Living. Doesn’t feel much like April though, does it? Apart from our heatwave of two days, we have had six months of winter. Enough already! This month in Home and Living we are being optimistic. After our little taste of summer we’re looking at gardens and patios, because it’s important to be prepared and ready to hit the ground running, BBQ tongs in hand, to make the most of those summer days we are owed after all this rain. So if you’re dreaming of a new patio, patio set or just the ultimate BBQ, we’ve done the running for you. Now, anyone know the opposite of a rain dance? And if you’ve decided that building a sunroom or conservatory is a better option or want to make an existing one more comfortable so you can look out at the garden, we looked at some furniture options for you. Our house this month is amazing. Just 15 minutes from Dingle, it’s a perfect retreat and can be all yours as it’s for sale. It is currently being used as an exclusive holiday let from Stay YNA Dingle. We would love a long weekend here, surrounded by these gorgeous interiors.

Yours in decorating,

Noelle

Make your sunroom, garden room and orangery work harder for you. Having recently extended our kitchen/living room by adding an orangery, we wanted to utilize this room all year round so we decided to include a gas fire in our plans. This was one of the best investments we’ve ever made in our home, giving this open plan area a focal point but also enough heat to ensure this room is used all year. So if you're in the process of building, extending or just retrofitting a wood burning stove, or gas fire, can change the way you live in your home for the better.

oodland Lodge offers laid back glamour with all the comforts of home, protected by serene evergreen forest and just a few minute’s walk from the unspoilt Drom beach. Stylish warmth and relaxed elegance define this newly built four-bedroom gem. The interior is a combination of tactile textures, delightful prints and contemporary pattern where cool mid-century furniture blends with timeless design. The whitewashed distressed flooring throughout the large open plan living area along with the fresh blue & white decor creates a bright, classic space in contrast to our favourite room, the colourful cosy TV snug down the hall. The location is amazing and so central to all the Dingle Peninsula has to offer‌a short five-minute drive from the white sands of Brandon Bay, a three minute drive to the villages of Cloghane/Brandon and just a fifteen minute drive to Dingle or the surfing mecca of Castlegregory in the other direction. Nearby rivers boast world-class trout and salmon fishing. Woodland Lodge can be rented along with the beautiful Green Vale down the lane to accommodate a large party of up to eighteen people. Patios, along with dec ks, are the workhorses of outdoor enterta ining. Although ma ny factors affect the suc cess of a patio, the most important consid eration is its location. A patio's site affects how much it is used and influences how well it serves the intende d purpose. If the patio is for outdoor dining , having it close to the house - and kitchen - increases the likeliho od of its being used. A spot that is conven ient to the kitchen may have too much or too little sun or an unpleasant view. Win d, sound, and privacy should also be con sidered. You may be able to screen the una ttra shade, or remove limb ctive views, add s to bring sunlight into the area. Consid er the view from where you will be sitting. If the view is a problem, an attractive fence or trellis can be a quick solution. The design of a pat io should take into account the style of the house and the surrounding garden, and the purpose the patio is to serve. Size matters! A large patio is expensive and ma y not be necessary if you plan only intimate gatherings with family or a few friends. Ho wever, if you like larg e parties, a bigger patio may be a worthwhile investment. As a general rule , a patio is ope n and exposed; it visu ally spills into the surrounding areas. To avoid feeling exposed, consider add ing a pergola or other overhead structure to give the patio a sense of containment. Add interest to a patio by having it slightly ele vated or sunken; don ’t forget drainage if par t or all your patio is below the surrounding grade. Sometimes paving a narrow side yard or other small area can turn an otherwise unused spot into a fun ctional patio. Don’t forget some spa ce for potted plants to add colour.

Get Ready to glow like JLo!

Jennifer Lopez Has Just Launched A Makeup Line With 70 Products Bronzer as we know it will never be the same. JLo just launched a massive namesake collection with Poland-based Inglot Cosmetics yesterday. “It is something I have been wanting to do for a very long time,” Lopez told Women’s Wear Daily. “A makeup line seemed like a natural progression since people are always asking about the products I use and how I get the glow to my skin.” The collection has over 70 pieces, including eyeshadows, bronzers, lipsticks, blushes, mascaras, and powders. The entire collection is done in shades of nude, gold, and shimmer to help us mortals achieve that classic JLO glow. “I really wanted to make it representative of what I would like, what I would use, from the color but also the quality,” Lopez said. “The price point was very important to me, which is why I chose to partner with Inglot. We can create great quality products that are affordable.”

Garden Magic

The Return Of Some Forgotten Plants

The garden can be such a treasure trove! Every year there are surprises, or rather plants which come up which were forgotten about during the summer of plenty! Dodecatheon is one such plant. Every year I forget the clump under the apple tree, until I see the pink starshaped flowers on their delicate stems. Dodecatheons are of the Primula family and like shade and moist conditions. They are perennial, but die down early in the summer, which is why it is easy to forget about them. Erythronium is another such plant. It is a bulb, and naturalises when it is happy. Under trees or in borders with good humus rich soil is when it is happiest. It produces star-shaped flowers in cream and yellow, and is a very beautiful, if subtle, addition to any garden. Incarvillea, on the other hand, is not subtle at all! It produces large trumpet shaped flowers in bright cerise on stems of about 40cm tall. The foliage is deep greeny pink, and deeply toothed. It is not the easiest plant to grow, as it does not like water logging of any kind, but

does not like to dry out either! Dicentra, or bleeding heart, is another favourite, with their delicate foliage and slender arching stems of flowers. These are hardier than they would seem, and tolerate most growing conditions. Slugs are a problem early on in the year, as they are with all perennials. Watch out for any emerging hostas as they can be devoured overnight. This is definitely the time of year to be at your most vigilant when it comes to our slimy friends… April is a busy time in the vegetable garden, though the ground is still too cold for most seeds to be sown directly into the soil – despite what it might say on the packets, wait another few weeks. Some crops you can try, however, are peas, radishes and chard. It is the month to finish all preparation outside as next month is arguably the busiest in the veg plot! Make sure you have the necessities to hand, such as your hoe, enviromesh and cabbage collars! Weeds, flies, caterpillars and butterflies will be your enemies soon…

Rally Argentina

Motorsport

F1 Goes Back To Baku

The FIA World Rally Championship crosses the Atlantic for the second time this year, returning to the Rally Argentina which has been a fixture of the championship since 1980. Rally Argentina has been based in the province of Cordoba since 1984. It’s an event which takes place in a variety of different landscapes, but one which will forever be defined by long-haul tests high up in the Traslasierra mountain, a lunar landscape dotted with crags of jutting bedrock, terraced house-sized boulders, mind-focussing drops and massed banks of passionate, meat-grilling spectators. And water splashes. Lots and lots of water splashes. Kris Meeke’s pacenote related ‘off’ last time out in Corsica was shorthand for a season that’s brought more than its fair share of pain for the men in red. Still, at least the C3 has been shown to be both a simpler car to drive and with the pace to stay with the best of the rest, meaning they haven’t had to throw caution to the wind to remain in touch with head of the field. Argentina sees the return of Craig Breen, the Waterford man returning for the first time since Sweden. He’ll start from an advantageous position and therefore should be well placed to fight for solid points positions, perhaps even a podium if things go his way. Meeke knows that he really needs a victory, perhaps more so than at any time in his career. It hasn’t been for lack of trying, mind; Meeke and Nagle have certainly had the pace to fight for wins, but a mix of poor fortune and costly errors have served to blunt their title ambitions. Still, at least they know exactly what it takes to win in Argentina: this the scene of his maiden victory back in 2015, a showing he’ll doubtless look to replicate this weekend.

Craig Breen Kris Meeke

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has a lot to live up to this weekend. Baku dished up a crazy thriller of a race last season, with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo winning after Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel famously succumbed to ‘road rage’ and clashed with Mercedes’ Hamilton. The Force India pair collided and Canadian Lance Stroll made it to the podium for Williams but was pipped at the line for second by Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, who also had a coming together with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. The most exciting race of last year, with the safety car driver kept busy, had been the most boring on its debut a season earlier. Hamilton is still chasing his first win of a campaign that is well on its way to becoming a

classic. He’s nine points adrift of championship leader Vettel. Baku could favour Ferrari, with Vettel aiming to make up for the disappointing eighth in Shanghai after winning the first two races. Mercedes, without a win in three, can take nothing for granted. Ricciardo, winner in China after a safety car period fell into Red Bull’s lap, is on a high and Baku rewards the brave overtaking moves he is known for. Force India were heading for the podium last year when Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon collided, and the two now have a very clear understanding of what is expected. Williams, meanwhile, whose podium was the only one by a team outside the top three, return to Baku as the only ones yet to score a point in 2018.

their heroes. Players are overwhelmed by the support they receive and the requests for autographs. The Lakers performed well above expectations and won a Division 1B title, got to the semi-finals of the President’s Cup and qualified for the League Cup. “We had a good run, not without it’s challenges on both the playing and financial front,” Aidan added. “A real rollercoaster ride. Our home performances were excellent and when our fans get going, it’s phenomenal.” Plans are on hold for 2018/19 until the team, coaches, volunteers and sponsors have an end of year celebration tonight at Scotts Hotel from 7.30pm.

Lakers Have The Potential To Achieve Big Things Words: Adam Moynihan A good start. That’s probably the fairest way of describing the Lakers’ first season back in the National League. Off the court, it was unquestionably successful as the team rapidly gained popularity and supporters, both old an new, flocked to Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre to see the team in action. From an organisational standpoint, it certainly appeared as though the people behind the scenes were really on the ball and the financial and sponsorship side of things seem to be going okay as well. (Or as okay as can be expected for a minority sport. Basketball and rugby, and even soccer, will always find it harder to get sponsorship in this part of the world so hopefully the people of Killarney continue to back St Paul’s as they prepare for their second season.) On the court, 2017/18 was fairly up and down. There were undoubtedly some excellent nights

Chairman: First Year Back Has Been A Rollercoaster Basketball is back, but did it really ever go away, you may ask. St Paul’s Basketball Club, through their senior team Scotts Lakers, are back in what locals are calling ‘big time’ basketball. Playing in Division 1 of the National League, the team have been thrilling home capacity crowds all season at the Auracle. “The support has been humbling both from supporters and local businesses,” said Scotts Lakers Chair Aidan Quirke. “This team is not possible without that support.” A great feature of the home games has been the high attendance by children and juveniles all year. Nearly 200 kids attend home games and flood the court after each game to meet

– not least the big finale against Kilkenny when Cormac O’Donoghue’s team scored the last 17 points in a remarkable comeback win - but consistency has been an issue and I’m sure the players would be the first to tell you that they left a couple of games after them. That was, of course, to be expected in their first year in the league but, with the experience of this past season behind them, they will be better-equipped next time out. The potential is there to achieve big things.

St Paul’s Youngsters Do Club Proud The past season was another very successful one for the juvenile teams of St Paul’s Basketball Club. With membership continuing to grow and reach record numbers of over 400 boys and girls, the future of Killarney basketball looks very bright and promising. The St Paul’s Little Dribblers initiative caters for almost 50 U-8 players every Friday evening where young participants learn new and basic basketball skills. The recent government Sports Capital Grant will facilitate the purchase of four new professional basketball hoops to assist the development of these young players. At U-10 boys level, the club catered for 50 players while 35 more played at U-10 girls level. Both teams competed in monthly blitzes during the season while St Paul’s hosted a blitz to finish the season. The St Paul’s U-11 boys team reached the Kerry cup final but lost a very close game while the U-11 second team made substantial progress throughout the season. The U-11 girls team were also very competitive in Kerry area board league and cup activities. The U-12 boys team enjoyed a tremendous season securing a league and cup double. The U-12 girls also had a great campaign in Division 1 and clinched the Shield title. St Paul’s U-14 girls did well in Division 1 competitions and the Division 3 team reached the semi-final of the playoffs. The U-14 boys had an outstanding season winning the cup and the Castleisland Christmas tournament and also finished joint top of league. However, they missed out on the title after losing an away game to Duagh without having the opportunity to play at home. The U-14 Division 3 team also competed very well with a huge panel of players. The U-16 girls performed admirably in Division 1 and lost the Shield final. The highlight of the season was a trip to Berlin in October where they won all their games against Alba Berlin. The U-16 Division 3 team remained in contention at the top of the league all season and were unlucky to lose out in the cup final. The U-16 and U-18 boys teams trained hard all year under the guidance of Mikey Keogh and Antuan Bootle with the U-18s reaching the Cup final. The U-18 girls team competed in a very tough Division 1 but did very well to reach the Cup final before losing to Castleisland. Congratulations to Jamie O’Neill, Ellen Kennedy, Tara Donnellan, Ben Switzer and Luke Crowley who represented Kerry this season. The return of National League basketball to Killarney and the emergence and success of Scotts Lakers is a huge source of inspiration to all the club’s juvenile players. It is fantastic to see so many of the club teams competing in Division 1 leagues and the club hopes to bring other teams to that level with more coaching and development. St. Paul’s juvenile section are very grateful to our main sponsor Tricel and the Stack family for their tremendous support. Every child in the club received their own set of playing gear and it is fabulous to see all the teams wearing the same matching outfits. Finally a special thanks to all the club coaches, assistant coaches, team managers and the hard working comittee who give up their valuable time to look after all the young players.

Club Championship Final Dr Crokes v Dingle Sunday, April 29 at 2.30pm (Austin Stack Park)

Can Deadly Geaney Derail The Crokes? Words: Adam Moynihan

Dingle are a good side. The bookies have them as second favourites to win the County Championship and their unblemished record in the Club Championship to date speaks for itself. It would certainly be unfair to call them a oneman team. But in Paul Geaney the men from the west have one of the deadliest forwards in the country. If the Crokes are to secure a second consecutive Kerry Club Football Championship, they’ll need a special plan for the former All-Star forward. If current form is anything to go by, it’ll be easier said than done. Geaney bagged six of Dingle’s eight goals in the group stage as they made relatively light work of Kenmare, Rathmore and Legion and if the reigning champions aren’t careful, the 27-year-old is more than capable of putting them to the sword. The good news for the Crokes is that they have actually been extremely stingy in defence so far this year. The Lewis Road club have kept three straight clean sheets in the County League and altogether Shane Murphy has only been beaten three times in their six games up to this point. Keeping Geaney and Dingle goalless on Sunday

would surely lead to a fifth Club Championship in seven years for Pat O’Shea’s men because, apart from that anomaly against Glenbeigh-Glencar (0-9 to 0-9) on the opening day of the league, they’ve registered at least 18 points in every game this season. The finalists met in Páirc an Ághasaigh last week in the County League but a number of regulars were missing from both sides. Encouragingly for the Crokes, a number of youngsters made valuable contributions, most noticeably the prodigious David Shaw and Mark O’Shea who scored 1-2 and 1-1 respectively. Michael Potts also chipped in with three points and Jack Griffin came off the bench to add 0-2 as the visitors ran out 2-12 to 0-7 winners. Colm Cooper was the only old

head in the forward division, which was made up by Paul Clarke, Gavin O’Shea, Potts, Shaw and Mark O’Shea. The likes of Daithí Casey, Kieran O’Leary, Brian Looney and Tony Brosnan are likely to come back in for the decider but the new brigade did their chances of breaking into the starting 15 no harm at all. Gooch and co. will undoubtedly be favourites to prevail but Dingle will have fond memories of the 2015 Club Championship final when they halted Crokes’ quest for four-in-a-row with a memorable 2-12 to 0-14 win. If their free-scoring talisman can continue his rich vein of form, another major upset could be on the cards. Pics: Eamonn Keogh

Oskars Co-Stars Hoping To Set Up Gritty Sequel They were the best of friends when they recently collaborated on a novel charity fundraiser but Glenflesk and Kilcummin could be on course for a far more hostile reunion. Both clubs impressed in the group stage of the Intermediate Championship and now find themselves on the brink of a final. From a local’s perspective, it would be fantastic to see an all-East Kerry decider but standing in the way are two of the most formidable intermediate teams in the county. Glenflesk face St Mary’s on Saturday evening in Killorglin in a game that is very hard to call. Mary’s have far stronger championship pedigree in recent years and, thanks largely to some tight defence, topped a group containing Dromid, John Mitchels and Ardfert despite being short some key players. Glenflesk, on the other hand, made light work of their particular group, racking up 66 points in three lopsided games. In Darragh Roche and Lee O’Donoghue they have two legitimate match winners. If they get the right service, they have the potential to unlock this miserly Mary’s defence.

Verdict: Glenflesk by three Kilcummin, meanwhile, seem to have their sights firmly set on reclaiming their senior status at the first time of asking. The last few years have been tough as they constantly flirted with relegation but dropping down to intermediate has given them a new lease of life. Kevin McCarthy and Noel Duggan have been the main man in attack while youngster Seán O’Leary has caught the eye at the back. Templenoe stand between Kilcummin and the final and you would probably have to concede that the Division 1 outfit are slight favourites. They certainly have form at this level: they’ve reached the last four in each of the past three seasons and made the final twice. This time out, a shock defeat to Gneeveguilla had them under pressure but victory over Spa in the final group game was enough to secure a semi-final berth. It’s a tough game to call but Kilcummin might just sneak a tight one. Verdict: Kilcummin by one

Moynihan’s Fossa Can Match Na Gaeil Na Gaeil eventually confirmed their place in the semi-final of this year’s Junior Premier Championship with a thoroughly comprehensive victory over Finuge last weekend. The original fixture between the two had to be abandoned when a freak collision left two Finuge players with broken legs, and there was no shortage of drama in the replay either as four players saw red in a fiery encounter. Perhaps crucially, one of those who saw red was influential Na Gaeil midfielder Stefan Okunbor. The club have appealed the decision (the final call will be made tonight) but if he’s out on Sunday, it will undoubtedly be a massive boost for Fossa. Séamus Moynihan’s charges qualified from Group 3 early following victories over Keel and St Michael’s-Foilmore, so defeat to St Pat’s in the final match mattered little. Fossa have plenty of talent all over the pitch but all eyes will be on the Clifford brothers, Paudie and David, who have been pivotal in the side’s success to date. Fossa are capable of matching Na Gaeil - it could well come down to a kick of a ball. The other semi appears to be more clear-cut. No fewer than 43 league places separate Division 1 side Beaufort and Churchill of Division 5. Eanna O’Malley’s team should win comfortably.

Leaders Celtic March On Towards League Final

Words: Adam Moynihan

Premier A Killarney Celtic 7-1 Listowel Celtic Peter McCarthy (2) Danny Roche (2) Wayne Sparling (2) Michael Devlin

Killarney Celtic are one step closer to confirming their place in this year’s league final following another comfortable victory over Listowel in Celtic Park. Peter McCarthy, Danny Roche and Wayne Sparling put the visitors to the sword with two goals apiece as youngster Michael Devlin chipped in with one in a lopsided match. Celtic are now nine points clear of Dingle in third with four games to play, so three points on Sunday against Mastergeeha will all but guarantee them a toptwo finish. Realistically, they’re almost guaranteed to finish first at this stage so it’s more a case of seeing who’ll be joining them in the final. We’ve had a few weeks off now again with Athletic so by the end of this week the top three will all have the same amount of games played. Dingle have their game in hand on Sunday against Castleisland and we’ll be keeping a close eye on that one. This is arguably Dingle’s toughest remaining fixture and if they were to drop points it would really play into our hands, but we’re working off the presumption that they’re going to win all their games and, therefore, so do we. Looking at the run-in, Dingle have Tralee Dynamos at home and Fenit home and away, whereas we have Celtic away and Fenit and Dynamos at home. That Celtic game will be massive. Depending on when it takes place and how other results go, we might have to beat Celtic to get into a league final with Celtic. The way they’re going at the moment, it will be a big ask but

we’ll just have to see how things pan out. We have no fixture again this weekend so by the time we play again, we’ll have had four weeks off. This is the second time we’ve had a full month off in 2018. There’s a lot of football on at the moment, though, so maybe it suits us. In other news, there will be two more Tralee clubs in the Premier A next season (although Dynamos could pass them on the way down). Tralee Celtic had already confirmed their pace in the league final and Mitchels Avenue also confirmed their promotion with a 3-2 victory over Classic last week. The top two contest the league final to see who wins the league but both go up regardless. It’s great that teams like Athletic and Celtic are competing for the title but it’s nice to have a bit of rivalry with the Tralee clubs at the same time. Park’s demotion has taken away from the league a bit, and Dynamos are going through a rough patch, so Tralee Celtic and Mitchels Avenue joining the top flight can only be a good thing.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

Last weekend was a tough one for Munster fans as the men in red got knocked out of the European Cup at the semi-final stage at the hands of Donncha Ryan’s Racing 92 in Bordeaux. It was a hard day at the office where very little went right for Johan Van Graan’s men as Racing were ahead 21 points to 3 by half time. Lots of silly handling errors and knock-ons peppered Munster’s play and it took a sin bin in the second half for Racing to inject

Ben, Conor and Damian of Milltown/Castlemaine GAA who came second in the U Can GAA Skills Competition.

Munster Dumped Out Of Europe By Racing life into Irishmen. In the end, Munster clawed back 22 points, losing by 5. This scoreline flattered Munster as they were uncharacteristically poor in every position. Stander and O’Mahony were absent for the majority of the match while Keatley was in very poor form. It was good to see the huge support that travelled to support Munster in Bordeaux. It was estimated that the Red Army outnumbered Racing supporters five to one. The atmos-

phere was amazing and the players must be disappointed with themselves and for the fans that made the trip. There are many questions being asked as to how they lost the game. Did the South Africa trip tire them out too much? Do we have enough cover on the bench? Did the 30-degree heat affect them? All in all, we, as Munster supporters, should be proud of this team; a team which saw a change of coach midway through the season and a team that still has a PRO14 to win.

It will be interesting to see what personnel changes will be made over the summer with the likes of Robin Copeland and Simon Zebo leaving. Tadgh Beirne is coming to Munster from Scarlets and look like an amazing prospect, possibly push for an Ireland place if he continues his form with Munster. In the other semi final Leinster thrashed Scarlets in a poor match. Will the Red army support Leinster in the final or want Donncha Ryan to win silverware. Time will tell.

teams were missing a number of players so you could not say it was a dress rehearsal for next Sundays Club Final. At least half a dozen of our under 21s got game time during the match and this will stand them in a goodstead for the Senior County Championship. A very pleasent statistic was that our under 21 players and subs contributed 2-10 from play between them, many of the scores from assists from Colm Cooper who scored the other two points. Dr. Crokes Juvenile JUVENILE RESULTS: Dr. Crokes U12A 5-13, Ballymacelligott 3-04. A powerful display from Crokes led by midfield duo Neil O’Carroll and Leah McMahon ensured victory in the County League Div 1A clash played in Ballymac. Mark O’Carroll made a few excellent saves, with good defending from Adam Byrne and Nathan Cronin. Dara Griffin at wing back had a terrific game and Gearoid Sugrue had an excellent game. Mikie Murphy scored a goal and Mathew Moynihan 2 points, with the clinical forward duo of Liam Hennigan (2-04) and Noah Sexton (2-01) completing the scoring. Anton Donchev worked hard when introduced. Dr. Crokes U12 B 2-8, Ballymac U12 B 5-12. Played in Ballymac the home side were left frustrated in the opening ten minutes of the game when an energetic Crokes team won the early exchanges. Ben Kelliher put us ahead but Ballymac clawed their way back into the game. At half time Crokes were leading by two points but in the second half with 8 minutes to go the sides were level. Ballymac kicked on with 1-10 to finish the game strongly. Best on night for Crokes Amber Team were Ben Kelliher, Kieran Moloney and man of the match Cathal Sugrue. East Kerry U16 League Round 4 Dr Crokes 1-15 Legion 1-9. Our first home game of the season in the M D O Shea and Sons East Kerry League was against Legion in Round 4 of the competition. Aided by the breeze in the first half our boys controlled the game and were 1- 10 to 0-2 ahead at the half time. A better performance by Legion in the second half produced a more evenly balanced game with Dr Crokes going on to win on a scoreline of 1-15 to 1 - 9. Another good performance by our boys, and an opportunity to use our full quota of subs on the night.
