Almost one month after his passing, the wife of the late Garda Paudie Twohig has issued a heartfelt thank you to the people of Killarney and beyond for their "emotional and practical support". Diane Collins Twohig, also a local serving Garda, said that both herself and her family "will be forever grateful" for the send-off given to Paudie (44), as well as the support offered from their colleagues in Killarney Garda Station, where Paudie was a popular staff member. Paudie also leaves behind two daughters Tara Grace (2) and baby Olivia Hope born just days before his passing. He was diagnosed with a stage four melanoma in April and sadly succumbed to the illness on Sunday, August 1 at Cork University Hospital (CUH).

GRATEFUL

“We offer our heartfelt thanks to the many friends, neighbours and well-wishers who gave us emotional and practical support during Paudie’s short, but hard fought illness,” Diane said. “To the people of Killarney town our family will

be forever grateful for the send-off you gave Paudie. Killarney was very close to his heart and his drive through town one last time was so special. The expressions of love and support and the continued shared memories has made our loss more bearable.” She also thanked her colleagues at Killarney Garda Station and the medical staff at

Cork University Hospital. “A special word of thanks to our colleagues in An Garda Síochána who supported our family over the last number of months and their exceptional professionalism on Paudie’s final journey. To Dr Derek Power, the staff in CUH, CUMH and MUHH we wish to express our deepest gratitude for the excellent care, support, kindness and respect shown at all times. Fr Kieran O’Brien, thank you, your personal service was a comfort and source of strength to our family. "Act responsibly" say Gardai as bumper weekend predicted | By Sean Moriarty Superintendent Flor Murphy of the Killarney Garda Division and the Health Service Executive are asking people to act in a responsible manner in anticipation of large crowds in the town over the coming days. It's the final weekend of the summer holidays, coupled with the expectations of good weather and the All-Ireland football semi-final and local Gardai are expecting a busy weekend in the town. They will have an increased presence in

the town tomorrow (Saturday) as Kerry face Tyrone at 3.30pm and town centre pubs are expected to be packed for the occasion. The last weekend of August is a traditionally busy one in town as holidaymakers take the last opportunity to enjoy the summer holidays before schools reopen fully next week. It is also a Bank Holiday weekend in Britain and many London-based Kerry people are home for the first time since travel restrictions began. “There were concerns that a lot of people were in the towns of Cork and Limerick for the All-Ireland Hurling final last Sun-

day,” Superintendent Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “We ask people to behave in a reasonable manner and be responsible for their own actions.”

STAYING SAFE Meanwhile Dr Margaret O’Sullivan, Specialist in Public Health Medicine at the Department of Public Health HSE South, asked everyone planning to watch the match, at home or elsewhere, to do so safely. She also reminded supporters that we all need to be careful, even if fully vaccinated. “I know that everyone is looking forward

bour who streamed Paudie’s funeral. You went above and beyond for us. “To Cathal Flaherty your incredible voice and lyrics were so poignant, Paudie was your biggest fan, thank you for performing for him one last time. Also, a kind word to Sarah Twomey, Aghinagh GAA, Killarney No Name Club and to all who donated to The Garda Benevolent Fund and Neo Natal CUMH. “As it is impossible to thank everyone, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions.” Paudie's Months Mind will be celebrated on September 1 at 8pm in St John The Baptist Church Ballinagree and will be streamed on www.munsterfunerallivestream.ie/paudie-twohig. to Saturday's game and hopefully to some celebration afterwards. We encourage everyone to remember to socialise safely – if you are meeting up with others you should do so in small groups and outdoors if at all possible. If there are crowds, we need to keep our distance from others and wear a mask. If you don’t feel safe, think about moving to somewhere less crowded and with good ventilation, so that you can enjoy the game in safety and comfort,” Dr O’Sullivan said. “We have high rates of community spread in most parts of Ireland right now, so if you are travelling to the match or watching it with others this weekend, do not be complacent about COVID-19. It is so important that we all remain vigilant and continue to follow the public health measures that we are all so familiar with, even if we’re vaccinated. And for anyone who is not vaccinated, please take extra care this weekend.”

Killarney coach at the heart of Paralympic Games | By Sean Moriarty An Irish sprint runner looking to secure his sixth gold medal at the Paralympic Games - is being guided by a Killarney man.

TEAM LEADERS: Britney Arendse and Jordan Lee prepare to lead Team Ireland into the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday. Photo: Paralympics Ireland

Jordan's pride as he leads Team Ireland into Olympic stadium

Jason Smyth, who is is legally blind, is competing in his fourth Paralympics in Japan in the 100m and 200m sprints. However, it is Killarney Valley Athletic Club coach Tomás Griffin - there to support Killarney’s Jordan Lee - who was called in to support Smyth as travel restrictions limited the number of coaches Team Ireland could bring to the event. Speaking from Team Ireland’s training camp in Tokyo on Wednesday morning, Griffin explained his role to the Killarney Advertiser. “My speciality is sprinting," he said. "I have been in touch with Jason’s coaches

from the outset. Today we are practicing his starting block procedure. He is legally blind and there are many other athletes training here so part of my job is to secure a clear lane for him. I am wearing my Killarney Valley Athletic Club top, its bright colours help him to see me and where he needs to be. There are blade-runners on the track too and I have to make sure he is aware of their presence – you do not want to collide with them.” He will be feeling the pressure on Sunday as both Smyth and Lee are in action on the Track and Field at the same time. He is also helping Dubliner Orla Comerford who is competing in the T12 100 metre and 200 metre sprint races. She took home two bronze medals, one for each category, from the 2018 European Championships in Berlin. She competes with Stargardt disease, a hereditary condition that affects her eyesight.

Paralympian Jordan Lee has told the Killarney Advertiser of the pride he felt after leading the Irish team during the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony on Tuesday. | By Sean Moriarty Jordan, a high jumper, and fellow team member Britney Arendse (Para Powerlifting) were selected as the Irish flag bearers for the ceremony. He only learned on Sunday evening and was sworn to secrecy until hours before the event. “I was very emotional and found myself tearing up when the Chef de Mission [Dennis Twomey] asked me to do it. I was over the moon but also felt very humbled – it just shows the trust they have in me,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I think I must be the first Kerry man to lead an Irish team into an Olympic Stadium.” He was speaking from the training camp in Tokyo ahead of his T47 high jump which is scheduled for 11.28am Irish time on Sunday morning. The T47 class is for competitors with a below elbow or wrist amputation.

EMPEROR

During the ceremony he had to follow traditional Japanese protocol including bowing to The Emperor of Japan. “It is really hard to put into words how I felt at that time, how much pride came into my body,” he added. “You see this on TV, now I was the guy on TV. It was very surreal bowing to the Emperor. There are so many more, vastly experienced, people on this team and they chose me – a 21-year-old from Killarney.”

TEAM MATES

Jordan is sharing the Olympic Village living accommodation in Tokyo with some of Ireland’s most experienced Paralympic athletes including Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop. Smyth, who is legally blind, is competing in his fourth Paralympics and is chasing his sixth gold medal in either the 100m or 200m sprints. McKillop is also competing at his fourth Paralympic Games and has won four gold medals over longer-distances like the 1500m or the 800m before that race was dropped from the Paralympic schedule. He competes with a mild form of cerebral palsy. “I have become very friendly with the two lads over the years from various other international competitions. These men are the greatest of all time. They have helped me pass the time while remaining focused,” Jordan added. One of their pastimes at the Olympic Village is studying their training statistics over the last few years and turning them in to fun facts. In preparation for the games Jordan has jumped the equivalent 9090 metres – or nine times the height of Carrauntoohil and has lifted over 120,000 kilos - roughly the same weight as a Boeing 747. “It just shows you cannot just rock up and compete at this level, there are no two better men to turn to,” he said.

Farmers penalised over National Park blaze | By Sean Moriarty Local farmers’ grants are being cut as a result of fires on their lands last April. Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae has hit out at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine after a number of farmers had payments reduced following a huge fire in Killarney National Park earlier this year. A Garda investigation revealed that the fire was started accidently in the National Park. It destroyed over 20,000 hectares of upland vegetation and it spread to adjoining farm lands before being brought under

control. It is illegal to burn farm land between March 1 to August 31 and farmers who do so are subject to heavy penalties including a cut in funding from the Basic Payment Scheme. Healy-Rae said this was unfair on the farmers. “I find it beyond belief that the Department of Agriculture is cutting those farmers of their farm payments saying that they have burnt ground, considering it was the State’s land that the fire came out of, the farmers did their level best to fight the fire and to keep it out of their property, and now they are being hit with a financial penalty,” he said.

Virtual concert to showcase teen's talent | By Michelle Crean A 14-year-old schoolgirl is definitely a talent to watch as a musical she has been writing over three years is ready for its public debut.

Further walk-in vaccination clinics planned

Sinead Marie Greene, who is going in to Second Year in Killarney Community College next week, is excited to showcase 'Prom Queen', a new jukebox musical using well known songs to tell a story. Today (Friday), together with 11 local teenage girls and singing teacher Sorcha O’Connor, she'll be holding a virtual concert of the best songs and numbers from the musical. And in the future she has big plans to bring it to a physical stage when the easing of restrictions allow. "I highly recommend this to any teenagers or parents, or anyone who just wants to watch a concert of amazingly talented teens," Sinead told the Killarney Adver-

tiser. "We are hoping to put it on a stage fully sometime next year using the money that this concert makes. You can find us on Instagram under @promqueenthemusical and the ticket link is in the description/bio there." The tickets are €4 and you can also buy a virtual programme for €1 extra. "Buying a ticket also gets you a link to watch our talent showcase where all of our cast performs a song so we could showcase all of them individually. You can enjoy two concerts for the price of €4!" She added that she's so grateful to Sorcha O’Connor, her amazing singing teacher who helped to get it up and running and for involving her two friends Siobhain Bustin and Jack Brosnan. "Another huge thank you to Killarney School of Music for allowing us to use their facilities for rehearsals."

Walk-in vaccination clinics will again be available in Kerry in the week ahead, as the last phase of the vaccination roll-out in the county continues. Anyone eligible for a Pfizer BioNtech vaccine can receive a first or second dose without an appointment at either the Killarney Sports and Leisure or Kerry Sports Academy in Tralee this Sunday morning, between 9.15am and 10.15am. Meanwhile, evening walk-in clinics will run at both Kerry vaccination centres next week, on Wednesday September 1 and Thursday September 2, from 4pm to 8pm. The walk-in vaccination clinics will be open to any eligible person aged 12 or over. Anyone aged between 12 and 15 years must be accompanied by an adult, and will need the consent of a parent or guardian before vaccination.

DOCUMENTATION

Those attending for either a first or second dose should check hse.ie to make sure they are eligible and that they bring all necessary documentation e.g. those hoping to receive a second dose should bring proof of their first dose vaccination (e.g. your vaccination card) and photo ID.

For anyone waiting for a second dose, it does not matter where you received your first dose as you can still attend. Peggy Horan, vaccination project lead with Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, said the team at both vaccination centres are looking forward to welcoming people to the walk-in clinics, and will be available to give any reassurance needed about the vaccination process. “We hope that the later walk-in clinics, running until 8pm, will be useful to people leaving work who may not have been in a position to attend previous walk-in clinics in the county. We’d encourage employers to share the details of the upcoming clinics in both Killarney and Tralee with their staff. They may also suit people leaving secondary school, either young people or their parents. We really hope that these clinics will encourage anyone still considering getting their vaccine to come along, walk-in and get their vaccine in a safe setting, with a warm welcome from our friendly staff.”

DEBUT: Sinead Marie Greene (pictured centre kneeling) will debut her musical ‘Prom Queen’ online today (Friday). Also in the photo are cast members and friends of Sinead.

Recognise the need for help AEDs are crucial to anyone in cardiac arrest, however everyone must follow the links in the chain to give the best chance of survival. "Recognise the need for help and call 112, begin CPR, send for an AED and use it immediately, continue until help arrives," Kevin O'Leary from Killarney Cardiac Response Unit said. "View the Michael Linehan Killarney Heartsafe Group and Killarney Cardiac Response Unit (KCRU) Facebook page for more info."

Fly the flag and support the Kerry team A group of traders on the top of High Street are calling on local businesses to follow their example and deck the town in green and gold ahead of Saturday’s big match. | By Sean Moriarty Kerry face Tyrone in the All-Ireland Football Semi-Final at 3.30pm tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon in Croke Park. Johnny Maguire of Bricín Restaurant, was the first to place green and gold bunting on High Street. He linked his decorations in with O’Sullivan’s Cycles and Jack C's Bar across the street. A highlight of Bricín’s display is a painting of Johnny’s uncle, Jackie Wade, who was a mascot for Kerry during the 1914 All-Ireland Football final. “It is very disappointing that so few have shown their support. It is up to each individual business and hope others follow us,” Johnny told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Getting past Tyrone in Croke Park is never easy. This could be the last time to show support but people seem to be blasse about the semi-final.” Publican John C O’Shea added: “I hope they will be up for over a month.” Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce also erected green and gold bunting on the streets of the town. President, Niall Kelleher, and Chamber volunteers were out and about at 6am this morning (Friday) to decorate the town before traffic got heavy. "The Chamber wishes Peter Keane and the Kerry team every success in their bid to lead the county back into another All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final," Niall Kelleher said.

Killarney woman urging everyone to get vaccinated | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney business woman who lost her partner to COVID-19 last year is urging everyone to get vaccinated. Eileen Finucane runs popular Kitty O Se’s restaurant on College St. She and her partner Seamus O’Connor set up the restaurant in 2019 following the success of their premises, of the same name, in Kinsale, County Cork. In April 2020 Seamus contracted the virus and died. He was only 59-years-old. Originally from Kilcummin, Seamus had ties to Farmer’s Bridge in Tralee, as well as Boolteens, Castlemaine where his extended family run the Anvil Bar, and he was popular in traditional music and motorsport circles in the county. “Tragically more than 7,000 people have lost their lives to this terrible virus and my partner was one of them. I urge everyone to get vaccinated, as that’s the only way we will beat this disease and prevent more loss,” said Eileen.

FUNDRAISER

Killorglin homecoming for Olympic heroes

She is also encouraging people to get behind a new fundraiser being organised by frontline staff all over Ireland. ICU doctors, nurses, healthcare workers,

Olympic Rowers Monika Dukarska and Aileen Crowley will be honoured in their home town of Killorglin tomorrow (Saturday).

Plans by Kerry Education & Training Board (KETB) to bring a dedicated campus to Killarney have taken another step forward after the organisation lodged an application with the Council.

Aileen and Monika will travel through the town, from the roundabout at Laune Bridge to Library Place at around 1pm. The Irish Women’s Pair took fifth place in the B Final in the Lightweight grade

during last month’s Tokyo Olympics. At Library Place there will be a space cordoned off for a presentation and to show the appreciation of the Killorglin people for their achievements during the Olympics. The event will take about 30 to 45 minutes and will be conducted in a fully safe and compliant manner in line with COVID-19 restrictions.

hospice staff, paramedics and Gardai throughout the country have launched a COVID-19 cycle of remembrance to honour the lives lost to the virus in an all-Ireland ICU4U charity cycle and memorial event, between September 2 and 4. Frontline medical staff throughout the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland will cycle to the Memorial Gardens at Islandbridge in Dublin this September to remember all those who have lost their lives to COVID-19. They also aim to raise €150,000 for those impacted by the secondary challenges of the pandemic as well as charities such as ALONE (older people), Aware (mental health supports), Aware NI (supports for overcoming depression) and Breakthrough Cancer Research (new treatments for cancer patients). “The ICU team were incredible during Seamus’ time in Cork University Hospital and it’s so moving that they are yet again there for family members by remembering our loved ones and by raising much needed funds for those who now need our help," added Eileen. After the cycle on September 4 members of the public will be invited to visit the commemoration site to take a rose and remember a loved one, making a charitable donation if they so wish.

KETB to expand Killarney presence

The third-level educational and apprentice service’s main campus is in Tralee where it offers everything from Post Leaving Cert courses to business and

languages courses, and trade apprenticeships. It does operate a Killarney facility – just off High Street - under the Youth Reach banner. That is set to expand after Kerry ETB applied to Kerry County Council to convert an unused retail unit on High Street into classrooms and associated works. The building is situated on High Street between Foley’s Townhouse and Bricin.

Meitheal praise the efforts of town’s outdoor staff

The volunteer An Meitheal group that keeps Killarney looking spick and span, has praised the efforts of the outdoor staff of Killarney Municipal District after a busy summer season under difficult circumstances. | By Sean Moriarty An Meitheal met every Monday night since April to keep Killarney clean and tidy. While the volunteers will continue to litter pick through the winter, their main

summer activities came to a finish on Monday. The group, led by local restaurant owner Johnny Maguire, said they were only putting the “final polish” on the work already started by the town’s outdoor staff.

They faced difficult challenges this summer; the town was exceptionally busy, especially at weekends, yet the outdoor staff were on the streets early every morning to make the town clean for the day ahead. “I have seen first-hand the work that they do, they are the real heroes, we just put the final polish on their work,” Johnny told the Killarney Advertiser. Nagle family hand over €26,000 to Pieta | By Sean Moriarty The family of a tragic Castlemaine teenager who died in a quad-bike accident, handed over funds raised during a car run in his memory. Ryan Nagle would have celebrated his 16th birthday on August 8. Between them they raised a staggering €26,719.28 and they donated the money to counselling service Pieta after the Tralee-based charity helped Irene cope with the death of her son. On Tuesday night the family handed over a cheque to Pieta’s Funding and Advocacy Coordinator for the South West, Con O'Connor. “It was a phenomenal amount of money to raise and we are just so grateful to the Nagle family, it was one of the biggest motor runs to ever happen in Mid Kerry,” he said.

A Killarney spinathon to help raise funds for local charity Comfort for Chemo brought in over €8,000 in a day as part of the annual 54321 Challenge. | By Michelle Crean Members of Killarney Cycling Club took to stationary bikes in town last week in the Outlet Centre, at Market Cross and near Scotts Hotel and were blown away by people's generosity. However, it was their location at the corner of the Plaza Hotel which brought in the most - over €6,000 - as passers-by and motorists in traffic dug deep to help the cause. At the weekend 10 ladies took part in 54321 Challenge which included cycling the Ring of Kerry, climbing Carrantuohill, a cycle from Killarney to the foot of Cnoc

Locals raise over €8k for cancer charity Na Tobair and then a climb up Cnoc Na Tobair finished by a cycle around the Skellig Ring. Since it was founded, the Challenge has raised almost €242,000 supporting a variety of very deserving Kerry charities. TJ O'Connor, one of the organisers who joined the ladies for the challenge, said they were blown away by the generosity of Killarney people. "We were really delighted with the massive support in Killarney," TJ told the Kil-

larney Advertiser. "The support at the corner of the Plaza, that probably brought in the most, about €6,000 and in total in Killarney we brought in €8,500. It shows a fantastic link between a local club and a local charity." He said that the challenge at the weekend was not only great fun for everyone involved but raised funds and awareness for the charity. He thanked Patricia O'Sullivan who guided them up Carrantouhil

as the weather was less than favourable that day. "When we did get to the top the sun came out and had some amazing views." Mairead Dunphy, he added, who is from Glencar and going through her own cancer journey joined them over the few days. "We had some laughs, and the goodwill from all the people over the few days made it all so easy. It has raised an awareness of what Comfort for Chemo are trying to achieve." Irish and African traditional music concert first of its kind A Killarney musician is behind a unique concert that blends both Irish and African traditional music as one.

AFRO-IRISH: Ugandan Samuel Kiwanuka (Vocals and Percussion) with Rosie Healy (Flute, Whistle and Vocals), and Tim O'Shea, (Guitar, Vocals and Bodhrán), will perform at St Mary's Church of Ireland next month.

As part of Culture Night in Killarney on September 17, Afro Trad Ireland will be a musical celebration of two ancient cultures, in music, song and stories. The concert features Kilcummin’s O’Shea, (Guitar, Vocals and Bodhrán), Ugandan Samuel Kiwanuka (Vocals & Percussion) with Rosie Healy from Headford (Flute, Whistle and Vocals) and will take place at St. Mary’s Church of Ireland on Main St between

8-9.30pm. “As far as I can tell this has never been done before,” Tim told the Killarney Advertiser. “I know of Africans that sing Irish songs and Irish musicians that play African music but I have researched it and cannot find what we are doing. Samuel speaks English and can sing our Irish songs and we have learned the African verses of his songs.” Booking is essential - contact Tim at timoshea99@hotmail.com or on 087 2814550 to reserve tickets. Live events return to Muckross Traditional Farms Last weekend, acting royalty took centre stage in Muckross Traditional Farms as legendary actress Kate O’Toole took on the role of narrator for 'The Playboy of the Western World – The Musical'. This sold out, mischievous, musical adaptation of Synge's classic was presented outdoors under canvas, in the style of a 1950s theatrical fit-up under the stars, and was enjoyed by all who attended. Adapted by Diarmuid de Faoite, Justin McCarthy and Producer Maria Moynihan Lee, the cast of 15 included ‘Foley’

actors and a live band. “It was a five-star performance from start to finish. The energy and the enthusiasm of the actors and musicians involved was palpable to all who were lucky enough to attend any of the three performances. Nothing beats a live performance,” said Muckross Traditional Farms Manager, Toddy Doyle.

We devise new and exciting art projects for every camp, ensuring your kids can return and develop further each time they choose to visit. Camps are above all fun, instructive and encouraging. Here students can learn to practice the core skills, techniques and concepts of creating art with regular snack breaks, games

FIRST ANNIVERSARY OBITUARY: KATHLEEN MACMONAGLE KEOGH

Kathleen's passing marked the end of a generation

“The saddest moment is when the person who gave you the best memories becomes a memory” One year has now passed since the death of Kathleen MacMonagle Keogh whose first anniversary occurs on August 31. Her sad death, this time last year, poignantly marked the end of an era for one generation of a very well-known and respected Killarney family. Kathleen was the last surviving member of seven MacMonagle siblings who were best known for their pioneering work in printing, publishing and photography for well over a century. Born on August 3 1926, she grew up in Glebeside, College Street, Killarney, with her parents, Daniel and Catherine, and family. Daniel MacMonagle was a master printer and photographer, who founded Killarney Printing Works and Photography in 1913 and he launched The Kingdom newspaper in 1923. He died in October 1964 and his wife Catherine (née Fogarty) died in March 1975. Following school in the Presentation Convent and a commercial course in Killarney Technical School in the 1940s, Kathleen worked in Mrs McDonnell’s Electrical & Photographic Store on College Street, a business that specialised in film processing, which was a skill she had a natural flair for. She worked in Hilliard’s Department Store, on Main Street during the 1950s and, in later years, she enjoyed working alongside her brothers, Paddy and Seán MacMonagle, in Killarney Printing Works.

FAMILY LIFE

Kathleen married Tim Keogh in January 1957 and they had five sons, Seán, Don, Tim, Francis and Eamonn, initially living in Upper Sunny Hill before moving to Countess Grove. Sadly, her husband Tim passed away suddenly on May 24 1976 while watching two of his sons playing for his beloved Dr Crokes against town rivals Legion in an Under 12 East Kerry final at Fitzgerald Stadium. Kathleen knew sorrow and sadness but she demonstrated remarkable resilience through difficult times. She experienced the loss of her own mother, Catherine, her husband Tim and her brother Louis all in the space of a short time span in 197576, but she had the strength and faith to

cruel blow to her. She was predeceased by all of her siblings Louis (1976), Harry (1994), Donal (2001), Seán (2005), May (2013), and Paddy (2014).

At her Requiem Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral, principal celebrant, Fr Niall Howard, paid a very warm tribute to Kathleen who he described as a gentle, devoted and caring lady and a wonderful mother, who had a very strong faith and who always put the best interests of her family and others first. Fr Niall said he got to know her particularly well when she and her brother, Paddy, would attend St Mary’s Cathedral for devotions and regular prayer services. He was joined on the altar by Fr Eamonn O’Driscoll, OFM, Canon Tomás Ó Luanaigh and Fr Paddy O’Donoghue and also in attendance were Franciscan Friary Guardian Br Pat Lynch, and family friend, Br Isidore Cronin OFM. Hymns in the church were performed by Kathleen’s grandniece, Lily MacMonagle, and soloist Maura Reen and the organist was Anita Lakner. Prayers of the faithful were read by the next generation of the MacMonagle family, Kathleen’s nieces Catherine, Riona, Ann, Orna and her nephew, Donal Walsh, and by her son Tim, while her two eldest sons, Seán and Don, delivered the readings. In a moving final farewell at the burial in Aghadoe Cemetery, two of Kathleen’s sons, Don and Francis, played one of her favourite tunes, the old Irish ballad Roddy McCorley, on concertina and tin whistle respectively. Kathleen’s youngest son, Eamonn, delivered a eulogy remembering her as a wonderful, devoted mother and grandmother and recalled how her love, kindness and generosity knew no bounds as

Outside of her dedicated family life, Kathleen was a member of the Franciscan Friary Choir, Third Order of St Francis and the Order of the Knights and Dames of Innisfallen. In her early years she was an accomplished oarswoman with St Brendan’s Rowing Club. During the course of her life overseas trips to Rome and the Chelsea Flower Show were some highlights while she thoroughly enjoyed family holidays in Dungarvan every summer, visiting her sister May Walsh and family. Despite the fact that there was a 100 mile journey between them for most of their lives, the close bond was never broken and they always remained particularly close. Kathleen had tremendous faith and belief in the power of prayer and rarely missed daily morning Mass in the Franciscan Friary. She had an enormous lifelong interest in news and current affairs and she also enjoyed hearing of local sporting successes, particularly when it involved Dr Crokes or Kerry teams. Sporting and media personalities often attracted her attention more than the match itself and she was greatly amused by the engaging and colourful personality of charismatic Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp while the distinctive and descriptive radio commentary by the late Weeshie Fogarty always captured her interest. Kathleen was extremely close to all of her five brothers and her sister and each of their deaths over the years came as a

she always put everyone else first. She even focused on the concerns of loyal, faithful family dog, Bob, ahead of herself. Bob’s health had declined rapidly in 2020 but he battled on and Kathleen would constantly say that she hoped that Bob would not die before her. The great Bob passed on just a few months before her in May 2020. Eamonn said his mother enjoyed a long and healthy life, always insisting that she never wanted to be a burden on anyone – and stressing that she never was. Her presence, her calming and reassuring influence and wise words were always a huge source of encouragement to all her family, he said. She always stressed the importance of good manners, to treat others the way you wanted to be treated yourself and to always use the words ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’. Kathleen often quoted the prayer of St Teresa of Avila when reassuring others that difficulties and obstacles could be overcome, that everything comes to an end eventually and that people could get over setbacks in life. “Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, All things are passing away: God never changes." The first anniversary Mass for Kathleen MacMonagle Keogh will take place on Tuesday, August 31 in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney at 6.15pm.

Change how you see yourself In the sweltering Californian heat of the summer of 1973, renegade psychology researcher, Philip Zimbardo, and his colleagues set up what has since become a notorious project, the Standford Prison Experiment. They created a mock prison in the basement of Standford University with assigned roles of prisoners and prison guards. The prisoners were essentially stripped of their identity, all being given the same clothes, having all personal belongings removed, and referred to by their ID number only. Much has been written about the ethics around this experiment and today it is the subject of numerous books and even a TV documentary. But the short synopsis of the experiment is that the people who were put into particular social situations assumed their position in society without question and simply accepted that as the status quo. In real life this experiment plays out all the time. We all know the overweight person who is always happy and makes self-deprecating fun of themselves in social situations, the macho gym goer who can’t show any sign of weakness, and the person who “could have made county” and continues to live in their past glories. The thing about all these people is; they are playing roles, assumed roles in society that are simple constructs, absolutely made-up. What Zimbardo proved with his experiment is that if you take people outside of the constructs that they have manufactured around themselves and that their peers, friends and family have helped build around them, they become different people. So how does this relate to your health, fitness, performance, body fat levels, self-perception? Absolutely everything.

CHANGE YOUR MINDSET

Firstly, you have to recognise that the persona you have is largely assumed and constructed by none other than yourself. If you want to change something in your life, that character you have created for yourself needs a change of narrative,

Philip Zimbardo

possible change of scenery and the other characters in the story have to start seeing other dimensions to you, to start seeing you in a different light, and to understand that you are changing how you see yourself. Let’s say you are living an unhealthy life right now, carrying around some excess body fat, not just the visible kind, but the less obvious one that surrounds your organs and can cause chronic illness down the track. You have assumed the role of a person who lives this way. But what if you don’t want to be at the mercy of chronic illness in the future, you don’t want to carry excess body weight? What if you want to feel more confident in your skin and have a healthier, stronger body and mind? Your assumed character then needs a change. You need to start living like the person you want to become. Does the fit and healthy character in your story go to bed late after binging Netflix with crisps? Probably not, that’s a different persona who has a different storyline and a very different ending. The person you want to become is probably planning and prioritising sleep and cutting down on less healthy foods. If you start playing that part, eventually that’s the character you will be cast as. Much like the bizarre scientific experiment in Standford University, we are a product of the environment we build around ourselves but also very much a product of the role that we assume in society, and that is very much down to ourselves, we do not need to accept where we are and who we see ourselves as. If you’re ready to start writing a different story for yourself, we can help. Visit www.activate.ie for further information.

Emergency medical card Question: What is an emergency medical card and how do I apply for one? ANSWER: An emergency medical card is a medical card that you can get without a means test in certain emergency situations. You can get an emergency medical card if you: • Have a terminal illness and have been told you have 24 months or less to live • Are getting end-of-life treatment • Need urgent ongoing care and urgently need a medical card • Only a healthcare professional (for example, a doctor or consultant) can apply for an emergency medical card for you. They will send the application to the HSE. • If your application is approved, it can take up to 10 days to get your medical card in the post. However, your card will be active within 24 hours of your application being processed. Your GP, pharmacy and hospital staff will see your card is active on their systems. This means you can access medical card services while you wait for your card in the post. If you get a medical card because you have a terminal illness and have been told you have 24 months or less to live, the HSE will never review your card and your card will never expire. If you get a medical card because you are receiving end-of-life treatment, the HSE will never review your card and

your card will never expire. End-of-life treatment means you have been told you have less than 12 months left to live. If you get a medical card because you need urgent ongoing care and urgently need a medical card, your card will expire after six months. You will need to complete a means assessment before your emergency medical card expires. The HSE will write to you to remind you to do this. KILLARNEY

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

London Kerry Persons of the Year 2021 announced Portmagee sisters Shilagh and Teresa McCarthy have been named as joint Kerry Persons of the Year 2021 by the Kerry Association London (KAL). The McCarthy sisters have been selected to mark their huge contribution to the Irish communities in London and Northamptonshire. Shilagh is the eldest of seven children and Teresa is the youngest. Growing up in beautiful fishing village of Portmagee, the core values dear to many Irish people runs deeply in both girls. Shilagh and Teresa will be presented with the Dennis Reidy Memorial Trophy at the association’s gala dinner dance at The Hilton Hotel, Wembley on Friday October 22. They will be joined on the evening by their family and friends and contingents from both Portmagee and Northampton. Shilagh has made a huge impact on the Irish community in London and was one of the founding members of the reformed Kerry Association in 2000. Nominated secretary, she steered the association for the first 11 years, dedicating herself to helping Kerry people in the capital. She was also a vital part of the Kerry Kingdom Gaels club (KKG), and also held a leading role in the London GAA supporters club for more than five years, raising thousands for all the London GAA clubs. She also played a huge role in the London Rose of Tralee Centre.

COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS:Teresa and Shillagh McCarthy from Portmagee have been named as joint Kerry Persons of the year by the Kerry Association London.

Her sister Teresa McCarthy also played for many years for KKG and later moved to Northampton where for the past 15 years, she and her husband Anthony have run a successful Irish pub called The Swan and Helmet. They are hugely involved with The Sons of Erin GFC in

Northampton. In March 2020, when the pandemic hit, Teresa was forced to close the doors of the pub. They decided to transform the pub into an emergency food bank, which proved to be a lifeline for many struggling families in the area.

Man gets QR code tattoo to prove he's COVID-19 negative Gabriele Pellerone, a well-known tattooist with over 200,000 Instagram followers, has masterfully inked a QR code onto the forearm of one of his clients in Italy. When the code is scanned, it displays the man's Coronavirus Green Pass and verifies that he has been vaccinated, tested negative, or recovered from the

virus. The permit has also been necessary to eat indoors in restaurants and is required for entry to museums, swimming pools, gyms, and other attractions in Italy. The complex tattoo also works, according to a video shared on Pellerone's social media. In the video, a man comes into a Mc-

They soon realised the community’s needs were far worse than they had originally thought. The food bank has now gone from strength to strength and Teresa has now founded The McCarthy-Dixon Foundation, a multi-faceted, registered charity that offers a range of services dedicated to supporting the local and Irish community. They focus on mental health and well-being, supporting a variety of local people and cultures, working with people with disabilities and bringing the whole community together. To date they have supported over 50,000 local people and at the height of the pandemic were packing and delivering more than 1,150 food hampers a week. Over the past 15 years Teresa has been instrumental in raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for local causes, hosting and organising countless festivals, community events and fundraisers. Teresa was awarded both Northamptonshire Community Person of the Year 2020 and the Northamptonshire Inspirational Woman of the Year in 2021 along with many other community awards over the years. Teresa is described as a real gem in the Northampton community, and both sisters will be recognised by the KAL for going above and beyond to help her local communities during their time in the UK. The McCarthy’s will be presented with the award at the KAL’s annual gala dinner in what will be a fantastic evening of craic and ceol, with Daithí Ó Sé as MC for the night and appearances from Barry Owen and other special guests. Tickets for the Kerry Association London dinner and dance are available from Secretary Margaret Rochford on 0044 77 68138709, by emailing info@ kerryassociationlondon.org or getting in touch with any committee member. In a social media post alongside a video of the tattoos, translated from Italian, Pellerone said: "People get tattooed for different reasons, also to remember a historical period like this, and all that it generated or left along its path. "Regardless, there is no objective way of seeing things, whether it be for better or for worse, each person has a story to tell and their own way of seeing or interpreting everything, beyond any form of prejudice."

Kerry's Paul Walsh meets football legend Ronaldinho Ronaldinho, the Brazilian footballing legend, invited Brosna Gaelic footballer Paul Walsh to his flat in Rio de Janeiro. Ronaldinho was eager to pose for photos, including one in which he's holding a Kerry county football jersey - and they have now gone viral on social media, with fans wondering how the two became friends. It's been speculated that they met when Walsh befriended Ronaldinho on Instagram and was advised to drop in if he was ever in Brazil. Leona Twiss, the PRO for Kerry County Board said: "It is real. That is something I can definitely confirm. So, allegedly the story is that Paul was messaging Ronaldinho on social media, and they made a connection and the offer was put there

that if he was ever in Brazil to make sure he called. And that's what happened and they had a lovely evening together playing keepy uppies and chatting and, obviously, he was very lucky to be presented with a Kerry jersey as well."

early Neolithic tombs The fascinating story of the excavations at some of the oldest extant monuments in Ireland is told in a new book 'Stone, Bone & Belonging' published by Kerry County Council. The portal tombs at Killaclohane near Milltown date to around 3,700 BC at the beginning of the Neolithic period in Ireland and are considered to be among the most important archaeological features of the Kerry and Irish landscape. The tombs are thought to be monuments to the end of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle which had persisted for thousands of years, and the transition to and adoption of agriculture, which heralded an end to a nomadic existence and the adoption of the settled way of life. The portal tomb known as Killaclohane I is the oldest extant monument in Kerry. In 2015, after nearly 6,000 years marking the passing of people and time, it was discovered to be in danger of imminent collapse. Kerry County Council stepped in to fund the conservation and excavation of the monument and continued to fund further excavations at another nearby tomb, known as Killaclohane II which is situated within Killaclohane Wood.

SIGNIFICANT ITEMS

The project, overseen by Kerry County Archaeologist, Dr Michael Connolly, included excavation, research and analysis of the material and data recovered from

the tombs. A wide range of significant items were uncovered, including finely crafted flint tools and weapons as well as Neolithic pottery and provided significant evidence about how the tombs were constructed. "The excavations also showed that the tombs had a long history of reuse both for burial and as focal points in the landscape used to create lineages and connections to both the peoples of the past and, more importantly, the land itself," Michael said. "The new book 'Stone, Bone & Belonging' presents the results of six years of excavation and research in a clear and informative way that is accessible to both the academic and general reader. It details the history of research into portal tombs in Ireland and places the tombs in their geological and archaeological context before detailing the excavations of the tombs." Detailed dating and discussion of the results of the research is accompanied by comprehensive analysis of the finds and environmental data by recognised experts in their various fields, all in a fully illustrated and beautifully produced hardback volume. The book comprises of 334 pages, 160 full colour plates and 67 figures and is available to purchase for just €20 from Kerry County Museum, Ashe Memorial Hall, Tralee (P&P €9 extra) in person or by phone on 066 7127777.

The All-Ireland football semi-final between Kerry and Tyrone will be shown live on an outdoor big screen in Tralee tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. Park Festival Tralee, a 10 day festival including the Feis at the Park, Féile at the Park and Tralee Music Revival, had released tickets for the game on the big screen and is inviting Kerry supporters to enjoy the game in a safe and enjoyable setting. Tickets, costing just €15

for up to six people, can be redeemed against food vendors. Entry will be from 3pm and the event will end at 5.30pm to allow time for the two Revival Music gigs later that evening. The festival will come to a close with local band Oracle which is already a soldout event with 180 people attending. Limited tickets for pods of up to six people can be purchased now for only €15 plus booking fee on www.festivaltralee. com

Hot air balloon festival record A hot air balloon festival in New Mexico has been awarded a Guinness World Record with 524 simultaneous launches. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta claim that they established the record for largest mass hot air balloon ascension in 2010 when 329 balloons were released simultaneously. The next year, the festival set a new record with 345 balloons, however

this was eventually broken by a French event with over 400 balloons. “Following our launch of 1,019 hot air balloons in 2000, the event’s leadership agreed that Albuquerque really should be the home for this kind of world record, so we started the process of learning how to document the launches,” said Paul Smith, the executive director of the Balloon Fiesta. "The process was quite laborious. Then an event that occurs every other year in France set the record with more than 400 balloons. We had decided to focus our efforts on our processes and making Balloon Fiesta the best balloon event in the world and we didn’t pursue the record." A spokesman for the festival, Tom Garrity, said he reached out to Guinness and have since received confirmation that their application had been granted.

GARDENMAGIC ‘My Kerry Biosphere’ calendar launched

Delving into the world of lilies Last week I wrote about calla lilies and zantedeschias, this week I will tackle ‘real’ lilies, such as stargazers and oriental lilies. There are nine divisions within the group, the most popular being Asiatic, Oriental, Martagon, Longiflorum and Trumpet lilies. Asiatic lilies grow to about one metre and have a broad range of colours from deep pink, orange, russet to yellow and white. They are not generally that fragrant, but they are reliable growers and produce masses of flowers, which are upward or outward facing. Oriental lilies are often referred to as stargazers, even though that is just one variety. They have large outward facing flowers, usually heavily scented. Generally they are white with splashes, shading or brush strokes of yellow, pink or maroon, though they are available in solid pink too. Orientals are a bit taller than Asiatics, usually growing to about 1.2 to 1.5m. Martagon lilies are my own favourite. They come in a wide range of colours, with ‘turks cap’ shaped flowers. The petals curl back from the flower giving them the appearance of a Turkish hat. They are not usually scented but are prolific! The Martagon lily can grow to 1.5m and its flower spikes can be 80cm long, an absolutely great addition to the back of the border. Longiflorum lilies are the white lilies often found in the florist shop – their main use in cultivation being for the cut-flower industry. Trumpet lilies have a similar shaped

flower to the Longiflorums, but are grown more in gardens as the flowers are a bit more interesting in colour and size. These are a tall lily at up to 1.5m with highly scented flowers, especially in the evening. I have a beautiful one called ‘Honeymoon’ (white trumpet, yellow inside, purple on the outer part of the petal) which has spread to a diameter of about 1m, and had eight flower spikes this year. The scent was amazing. Lilies should be planted anywhere between September and March, but are usually only available as a spring bulb. They can be divided from September onwards.

THE LILY BEETLE

Lilies will grow in any soil, though if it is too dry the growth can be stunted, especially of the flower buds. They like to have their feet in the shade and their head in the sun! If the soil is a heavy clay, mixing alpine grit can be beneficial, as waterlogging is a definite killer. The main pest to look out for is the lily beetle, which is unfortunately becoming a real problem even here in Kerry. They are a bright red beetle about 1.5cm long which feed on the leaves and stems of the plant. The female lays orange eggs in batches on the underside of the leaf, which hatch into yellow/brown larvae. The larvae feed on the leaves hiding in their own ‘frass’, which protects them from the sun and predators. They can decimate plants, and the beetles should be destroyed as soon as you see them. If they see a shadow they will drop off the plant and lie on their back on the ground, making them impossible to spot. If they are on the plant just hold your hand under the leaf to catch them.

The 'My Kerry Biosphere' calendar for 2022 was launched this week at an event in Killarney House as part of National Heritage Week. The artwork on the calendar has been created by students from all over Kerry who were invited to connect creatively with the natural heritage of the Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve earlier this year through a calendar art competition. A total of 257 artworks were submitted with 14 chosen to create the 2022 ‘My Kerry Biosphere’ Calendar. The Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is located in the centre of Kerry, with Killarney National Park at its core and the MacGillycuddy Reeks and the Paps mountains making up a significant portion of the area included. Biosphere Reserves are about learning how to live in harmony with nature. Connecting to our natural and cultural heritage is a big step in achieving this goal. “The calendar art competition gives students all over Kerry a chance to engage creatively with the wealth of Biodiversity we are so lucky to have here in Kerry," Eleanor Turner, Biosphere Officer with South Kerry Development Partnership said. "It encourages them to begin ex-

ploring how we can support and protect these important species and habitats and how in turn these actions can benefit our community well-being and connection to our local places”, she said. An art exhibition to showcase entries relating to both the current calendar and the 2022 one also took place in Killarney House as part of the Heritage Week event and the art will again be available to view in Killarney House from September 16 to October 15. The Kerry Biosphere is also partnered with Leave No Trace Ireland, working together to encourage responsible use of the outdoors. Maura Kiely, CEO of Leave No Trace Ireland, said: “We are delighted to have partnered with Kerry Biosphere in the development of this calendar. This calendar is a wonderful way to celebrate local biodiversity and appreciation of the outdoors." She added that they have included some top tips on how we can all enjoy the outdoors responsibly. This competition is supported by the Creative Ireland Kerry Programme and the Kerry County Council Arts Office. Calendars will be available for sale in the coming weeks, please contact kerrybiosphere@skdp.net with any queries.

LAUNCH: The 'My Kerry Biosphere' calendar for 2022 was launched this week at an event in Killarney House as part of the National Heritage Week. At the launch were: Pat Dawson (Manager Killarney House and Gardens), Kate Kennelly (Arts Officer, Kerry County Council), Cathaoirleach Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, Eleanor Turner (Biosphere Officer with South Kerry Development Partnership), and Mike Scannell (Kerry County Council Director of Services - Economic & Community Development). Tractor and classic car run makes a welcome return Killarney town centre came to a standstill last Friday evening when several members of Nobber Vintage drove their vintage tractors and classic cars along High St and Main St. It was all part of the County Meath-based club’s annual Ring of Kerry Vintage Tractor Run which was making a welcome return to the local classic calendar after last year’s event got cancelled as a result of pandemic restrictions. Several classic vehicles, including 10 cars, nine tractors and a few classic motorcycles left County Meath earlier last week. They arrived on the outskirts of Killarney at about 5pm Friday evening where they were joined by over 20 local vehicles be-

fore proceeding through town. On Saturday the large group of drivers completed the Ring of Kerry before making their way back to Nobber or local garages. Locally, the event is organised by members of the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club including bothers Tom and Tony Wharton. “Tony drove a 1995 Massey Ferguson all the way from Nobber,” Tom told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was great to see it back. Last year we were all ready to go – we had the event launch and everything but we were stopped at the last minute.” This year’s event raised money for Crumlin Children’s Hospital and autism charities.

Three major car events coming to Killarney Racecourse Horsepower of a different kind is set to take over Killarney Racecourse next month. The venue will host three different car events across two weekends in September. On September 5, the racecourse will host the finish of the Bumblebee 1000 Supercar ‘South Coast Drive’. Over 40 supercars, including examples of Porsche, Lamborghini, Ford Mustang and Aston Martin will set off from Dublin on

September 3 to raise money for the Jack and Jill Foundation. After overnight stops in Wexford and Cork the drivers will make their way to the finish line at Killarney Racecourse. More details of this event will be released in due course but the cars are expected in Killarney around 2pm on September 5. Two weeks later the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club will run its annual classic car show at the Ross Road venue. This is the first time since 2019 that the

local classic car club will run its annual show and this year they will join forces with Killarney Cars ‘n Coffee to run a double-header event on September 19. “Killarney Cars ‘n Coffee was always looking for a new venue after a successful run at KC Print,” local organiser Ger Neeson told the Killarney Advertiser. “By working with Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club we can show what we do alongside another established event.” Tom Leslie of Killarney Valley Classic and

Vintage Club said the club was looking forward to running its event after a two year absence. “It is time to get those cars polished,” he said. “We usually run in July but we had to wait until we could see what we could do with all the restrictions and we are delighted to be back up and running.”

Never miss an opportunity In the stock market you hear endless tales of missed opportunities from investors who are still mourning their unrealised fortunes. Guilt-ridden investors recount how much they would be worth if they had just made that one mythical investment. My theory: The same people who regal these self-proclaimed horror stories to anyone who has the misfortune of being within earshot are most likely the same individuals who will continue to miss every future opportunity. Hypothetically talking about what you would have done is fantasy and has zero correlation with actual investing. The most important element to investing is simply taking action. If you can’t clear this first hurdle, your story is redundant. It’s much easier not to put your chips on TO LET: 4 Bed house in White Bridge Manor, Phone Roger on 086-8136888. It takes an entirely different level of resolve to realise the inherent risk of the market and then offer up your hard-earned money without the certainty of future reward. While the probability of a positive outcome is in your favour, the possibility of future loss is ever-present. Now don’t get me wrong, we all have a few of these stories. mock me on a daily basis. Fortunately, one realisation you are destined to have after missing hundreds of opportunities is, opportunities are everywhere. The stock market is a smorgasbord of opportunities, some more obvious than others, but opportunities are always there for those who are willing to look hard enough. With that said, opportunity, by nature, does not statistically fall into someone’s lap. Opportunity most often strikes those who are actively looking. In the investing world, fortune favours the prepared. So instead of spending all your time daydreaming about what-if investments, put a plan in place so you can take advantage of the inevitable future opportunities as they arise. There are six different toning tables and each one focuses on the stomach and pelvic floor muscles, and one other part of the body. Table 1: Works on the hips and leg muscles and core; all the time supporting your back muscles. Table 2: Works like a sit up table working the obliques, core and thighs. Table 3: Works on the upper neck and shoulders, arm biceps and triceps, and core. Table 4: Works on the waist, upper

neck, arms and core. Table 5: Works on the inner and outer thighs, arm biceps and triceps, and core. Table 6: Works on the lower part of the body, bum, hips, core, and legs. They really help improve posture. This in itself will help you if you are feeling stiff and tight. It will help loosen you out gently and effectively. You'll be able to breathe better as it opens the rib cage, and increases your breathing when you do any form of exercise. Overall, you'll have a feeling of well-being, increased energy levels, and a better sleeping pattern. We recommended you try to do the tables at least two to three times a week. It's advised to book an induction day first to see how they suit you. We have limited spaces in keeping with our COVID-19 policy so booking is essential. For more information or to book please call Jill on 064 6632966.

The beginning of the school year is met with very mixed emotions by everyone. While it is nice to get back to meet everyone again, it is hard to leave the lazy, hazy days of summer behind as students and teachers try to click back into the routine of early mornings and busy school days. For Leaving Cert students it can be overwhelming and stressful thinking of the busy year ahead, the amount of work to be done, and the important decisions to be made. That’s totally understandable. It may seem that June 2022 is a long way off but if you talk to students who have gone before you they will tell you that time moves very quickly in your final year of secondary school so the earlier you establish a good routine for yourself the better. Get out of those starting blocks early! The work that you do between this and the midterm break is critical to lay the foundations for further revision later on. Amendments have been made to the exams in each subject for 2022 so make sure you familiarise yourself with them at the start of the year. You can find all the details on www.gov.ie by searching Leaving Certificate 2022.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Once you see your timetable you will have an idea of what days are likely to be more demanding than others. It is really important that you put together a workable time plan right from the start. You will still be working on completing Leaving Cert courses in all of your subjects while also working on project work; and on top of this you will need to incorporate some study and revision. Managing the demands of completing homework assignments and project work with grinds outside of school if you are doing them can mean that study and revision are often not prioritised early enough in the year. To avoid this my advice is to spend some time in the first week getting yourself organised and focused on a weekly timetable that is workable. Make sure your have all your notes, exam papers and other resources well organised and if you are missing any sections from Fifth

Year ask your teachers or classmates for these resources. Teachers will be busy trying to finish courses so they may not get to revise the material from Fifth Year until right before the pre-exams in late January.

DAILY ROUTINE

Try to get into study mode now. Make it part of your daily routine from Monday to Friday and choose one day over the weekend to catch up on revision. Use any free time in school as an opportunity to get some work done in a structured environment with the support of teachers and classmates. Keep in mind the end goal of giving your very best performance in the exams in June and work towards that. If that seems difficult, break down the year in more manageable sections: September to midterm – eight weeks Midterm – Christmas – seven weeks Christmas – midterm – six weeks Midterm – Easter – six weeks Easter to June – five weeks All the best athletes do their heavy training in the early stages of the season – follow that lead. It is not without reason that the Leaving Cert is described as a marathon; make sure you are in good shape facing the finishing line on June 8, 2022.

Sparks will fly at long-awaited semi-final clash ALL-IRELAND SFC SEMI-FINAL

_________________________________________________________________________

Kerry v Tyrone Saturday at 3.30pm Croke Park Live on RTÉ from 2.30pm

Heated. Tetchy. Uncompromising. Kerry and Tyrone matches are often ill-tempered and almost invariably well-contested. In simple terms, the teams just don’t like each other very much. And you’re fooling yourself if you think the events that have unfolded off the pitch in recent weeks have done anything but fan the flames. Ever since Tyrone’s golden era of the noughties, a period during which they consistently had Kerry’s number, there has been an uneasy relationship between the two counties. Stationed at either end of the island and with massively distinct footballing pedigrees (Tyrone’s first All-Ireland came in 2003; Kerry already had 32 by that stage), it is an unlikely rivalry that has now spanned three decades. The pendulum swung back in The Kingdom’s favour during the last decade, and on paper they have the star quality to maintain the upper hand well into the twenties, so the enmity is perhaps not as apparent as it used to be. But Tyrone’s handling of their recent COVID outbreak has reignited the hob, and the disdain each county still has for the other is now brimming at the edge of the pot.

DELAY

In general terms, the GAA’s decision to push the game back an extra week, in line with Tyrone’s wishes, was greeted with a shrug by the locals here in Kerry. “Grand.” As county chair Tim Murphy had outlined, there was an “over-arch-

ing wish” to play the semi-final anyway, as opposed to taking a walkover. Delve a little deeper, though, and it’s clear that not all is rosy in the garden. “We find ourselves in a very difficult situation not of our making,” Murphy said (after outlining the board’s, and the team’s, desire to play). “We have explicitly followed all COVID protocols and we have taken every precaution to

protect our players and management.” If that reads like a dig at the opposition, it’s because it more than likely is. There is suspicion (unproven, it must be said) in GAA circles that Tyrone did not handle their initial outbreak as efficiently as they might have. If that is the case, Tyrone’s sympathy card loses considerable value. It is also understood that Tyrone made no attempts to forewarn Kerry of their

plans to pull out of the fixture before dropping that bombshell on the Saturday before last, despite the fact that the two counties had previously liaised over the issue. And as happy as the board, the management, the team, and the supporters are to see the fixture being fulfilled, there is an unshakable feeling that Tyrone have played the GAA like a fiddle. Joint manager Feargal Logan said dur-

55

27.08.2021 ing the week that all of his players are now available for selection. "There was a good period there where we didn't have everybody on the training field at the same time but we have got to that point now, which is helpful and positive, and where everybody is physically present and they are out of isolation," he told the Irish Independent. "We’ve got everybody together." One the one hand, it’s good to hear that the players who were sick have recovered. On the other, isn’t that awfully convenient for Tyrone that all of their players are now available to them? Having a fully fit team is not always a luxury that semi-finalists have. Meanwhile, Kerry have been hanging around five weeks for a game. Mayo will have three weeks before their All-Ireland final. The club seasons in the participating counties have been thrown into disarray. It seems like everybody is losing here. Except, of course, for Tyrone. If I was in that Kerry dressing room on Saturday afternoon, I know how I’d feel about my opponents down the hall. And I have no doubt Peter Keane and his players will tap into that. “When this game is over, they’ll wish they gave us the walkover.”

MEETINGS

As we alluded to previously, Kerry have been on top in the most recent championship meetings between the sides: the 2011 qualifier in Killarney and the semi-finals of 2015 and 2019. The Kingdom trailed by four points in ’19 and it took a much-improved second-half performance, featuring a goal by Stephen O’Brien, to eventually prevail with three points to spare. The margin of victory was not wide in the end, but the better team won. Earlier this summer, the teams met in the Fitzgerald Stadium in the semi-final of the National League and Kerry racked up a huge score (6-15) en route to a 16-point win. This rout famously prompted Peter Keane to say that if you took the goals out of the match, there wasn’t much between the teams. He doubled down on that assessment at a recent press briefing. “I don’t think it was reflective of the day,” Keane told journalists. “I think I said that afterwards. You (the media) were mocking me and laughing when I said that if you took the goals out of it, I wouldn’t have felt there was a whole pile between us. Tyrone got 1-14 - 15 scores - against us on the day. They’re a very capable team. We were down 0-3 to 0-1 in that game and the next thing we got a goal and then Gavin White got a goal in over the top. “So we’re not reading too much into that game down in Killarney and I don’t think anyone else should ei-

ther. That’s not me just brushing it off. A game can run away from you very quickly and it’s very hard to put a game right when you’re trailing that early.” Keane is notorious for attempting to play down victories but, in truth, there is no covering up what happened that day. Kerry were simply spectacular, particularly in the forward division where Paul Geaney, Seán O’Shea, Paudie Clifford and David Clifford were rampant. That being said, the championship is a different beast altogether, so perhaps he is right to divert attention from the league result.

DARA MOYNIHAN

Tyrone have a full deck and so too, it seems, do Kerry. Diarmuid O’Connor and Dara Moynihan are apparently both available after recovering from injuries and both will start if that is the case. Moynihan, in particular, has been sensational this year and he will play a crucial role if Kerry are to reach the Promised Land. Moynihan’s inclusion is likely to come at the expense of either Jack Barry or Stephen O’Brien, with Micheál Burns being another candidate for the half forward line. Killian Spillane and Tony Brosnan will be hoping to force their way into the starting lineup but Keane has consistently posted David Clifford and Seán O’Shea in the full forward line so far this year. One would imagine that he will be loathe to change that tactic now. David Moran has improved in recent matches after a quiet enough start to the campaign and, barring a major shock, he will partner O’Connor i lár na páirce. Captain Paul Murphy returned to the starting 15 for the Munster final after seemingly falling out of favour for a few weeks and he should keep his place somewhere along the half back line. In-form wing backs Mike Breen and Gavin White are also likely start, as are the newly established full back unit of Brian Ó Beaglaioch, Jason Foley and Tom O’Sullivan. Shane Ryan has been Keane’s No. 1 from Day 1 and the Rathmore man will continue between the posts this weekend. All the controversy of the past number of weeks has teed this match up nicely and the tension is sure to spill over to some degree, both on the pitch and amongst the 24,000 supporters in attendance. Tyrone always bring intensity and it could well be a competitive game. However, if you look at the matchups purely from a footballing perspective, Kerry should have too much about them, particularly if Moynihan is fit. VERDICT: Kerry by eight.

Kerry to climb on in spite of Tyrone’s shenanigans Former Kerry goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald previews tomorrow’s All-Ireland semi-final between Kerry and Tyrone It was on, it was off, and it is on again. Tomorrow at 3.30pm in Croke Park, Kerry will face down Tyrone in the All-Ireland football semi-final. What makes it more attractive is that Dublin are no longer in the equation to lift Sam for a record breaking seventh time in a row. Instead, Mayo are there on merit after a splendid come back against the Dubs. Will it be a cushy match against Tyrone so that we can look forward to an All-Ireland final of Mayo v Kerry on September 11? Just like that? No, it is not that simple. All the talk about Tyrone being unable to play because up to 17 of their players/ management/officials having contacted the dreaded virus has deflected from Kerry’s preparation for this semi-final. I do have the greatest of sympathy for anyone who contacted COVID and wish them all a full recovery, but there are many unanswered questions.

COVID

Tyrone played their Ulster final v Monaghan in Croke Park without four players isolating due to COVID. Tyrone minors have worked their way into the All Ireland final beating Cork (winners over Kerry by a point). No word of COVID. How did they escape in the county with the highest incidence of COVID? Tyrone played hardball with the GAA authorities saying they would not play the senior semi-final. The GAA did not want that walkover and relented. Joint Tyrone manager Feargal Logan filibustered and obfuscated his way (just like the Healy-Raes) through a recent interview, hinting that many of their players were ‘counselled’ not to take the vaccination because it is alleged that it would inhibit their performances. If that is so, then one’s sympathy for Tyrone diminishes drastically. The rest of Ireland has been so compliant in getting vaccinated.

Why? Because the medical advice states that vaccination is the ‘sine qua non’ for returning to a healthy nation. Shenanigans by Tyrone? It wouldn’t be the first time and there is no love lost between the teams, particularly from the battles in the noughties, when Tyrone were on top. They were quite prepared to use any tactics to down The Kingdom. Ask Gooch and the fouling by Ryan McMenamin, who got away with murder. In all of the considerations and behind the scenes negotiations over the past number of weeks, the Kerry County Board has been magnanimous, sympathetic and sensible. Their olive branch presented the GAA with a way out of what was developing into an impasse. Peter Keane and his management have also played a sensible part in this public controversy. They stayed out of the public glare and got on with preparation for a semi-final. Mind you, it was not all clear-cut and many adjustments were

put in place to create one big bubble for players and management, thus minimising the chances of anyone contacting the virus. We await to see if this has been successful. If it has been done well it should bond this Kerry team even closer. Keane will have kept the focus on the semi-final.

THE DEVIL’S LADDER

The Munster final was negotiated in style; now for the ascent of the Devil’s Ladder. That is always a challenge, particularly with so many loose stones, which can divert one’s attention. Tomorrow Peter Keane will lead his troops on that ascent and will be mindful of the last time he attempted that odyssey for real, two days after that dreadful loss to Cork last year. He wanted to get away from it all and suffered a shoulder injury on the mountain. He recovered well and Kerry haven’t looked back ever since. They were impressive and unbeaten

57

27.08.2021 during the league. His eyes, now, are on the championship. The short-term goal was accomplished in style on July 25, not just by beating Cork in the Munster final, but by making a real statement trouncing The Rebels by a whopping 22 points. Now for the Devil’s Ladder tomorrow. He knows the younger members of the Kerry team need the experience of senior championship battles in Croke Park. They have been there as successful minors, but senior is a big step-up. Kerry will want a game in preparation for the final. The manager will want to keep improving the main tactic of every ball being contested, the fast delivery into the forwards, playing their trump card of prolific scorers doing what they do best, racking up a big score. The defence has improved, but the central spine is still causing some concern. Jason Foley is a big strong athletic young man; in fact, I remember him as a very fast runner in the Community Games. He still has that athleticism, but has to learn the subtleties of full back play. Minding the house is the prerequisite for the wearer of the number three geansaí. He is improving, but showed his naivety in the Munster final when he was caught out for the Cork goal 50 yards outfield. It will be interesting to see what ploy the manager will use to shore up the centre back position. No readymade centre back so a sweeper role may be assigned to Tom O’Sullivan? Or Paul Murphy? Orr even Paudie Clifford dropping back? My preference outlined all year in this column is Mike Breen at centre back. He is strong, committed, tenacious and sensible in defensive play. He was a star

player in Sigerson Cups, a great indicator to determine if a player will make it at senior intercounty level. I expect him to be the Kerry centre back for the future. Is it a gamble to say the future is now? A run as the orthodox number six tomorrow would be a good indicator to solving the problem for the final. My second contention all year has been the centrality of midfield control, allowing us to play our trump card as often as possible. Simply get the ball into the match-winning forwards. Diarmiud O’Connor is coming along nicely, and David Moran is the preferred choice at the other midfield slot. This great, longtime servant of Kerry football has done fine, but I see his role differently to Peter Keane. I don’t see how a man that has served Kerry so well can last at midfield in the modern running game. He is 33 years of age and has played an awful lot of football, while also recovering from two cruciate injuries. I see an important role for him, but not for the full game. Should he start, or should Kerry bring him on for 30 minutes when the pace of the game has dropped and the pattern has been set? Remember, every game is different and takes on a life of its own. James Horan took the tough decision in Croke Park last week when he called Aidan O’Shea, his most experienced player, ashore early on against Dublin. It was a crucial factor in the winning of the game.

THE CLIFFORD BROTHERS

David Clifford is Kerry’s brightest star and let’s hope he will be allowed to shine. No doubt, Dooher and Logan will

have plans to dull his light. Who will be the new McMenamin? I am not sure, as I have no idea which Tyrone players will appear in Croke Park like Lazarus re-incarnated. No one has any real idea which 15 will start for Tyrone and more importantly how their physical and mental fitness will be after COVID. Seán Boylan rightly questions if players can recover quickly from the virus. David Clifford is a marked man; it goes with the territory. What I do hope is that the referee will apply the rules and know the difference between legitimate tackling and dangerous play. Think of Small sending Mayo’s Eoghan McLaughlin to hospital with his jaw broken in two places. If that happened outside Croke Park the perpetrator would end up in jail. As I wrote last week, Conor Lane’s performance was dreadful. Unbelievable. (What wonderful sensible refereeing in last Sunday’s hurling final, by the way.) David Clifford will be doubly marked, so the onus is on the others to exploit the resultant open spaces and clock up the winning scores. Goal opportunities will emerge, but it is unlikely that Kerry can run in six like they did v Tyrone here in Killarney at the end of the league campaign. There is no place to hide sub-par performances in Croke Park on big match days. COVID and Tyrone, shenanigans or otherwise, one will have to wait and see. One thing is for sure: Tyrone will not just turn up to fulfil a fixture and suffer another six-goal defeat. They will be as tough as nails.

DISCIPLINE

Kerry must maintain their discipline and

not get sucked into a free for all. If David Clifford, or anyone else, is getting a rough time and the referee is not providing the proper protection, brotherly love is not served best by Paudie and others going to his rescue. Paudie has been a revelation and the big plus for Kerry this year. He has a mighty engine, adopting defensive and offensive roles, well able to take his own score as a splendid kick-passer of the ball. Remember that 40-yard kicked pass he sent nearly into Seánie O’Shea’s mouth for the latter to score a great goal. Now when Paudie moves, a score is on. O’Shea and others will tack on the points. Hopefully, Dara Moynihan is back from injury to pick up on his role as facilitator of scores. Above all Kerry must impose their game on Tyrone and not be bossed into a physical brawl. Initiate, not imitate. We don’t want anyone sent off with the final just two weeks away. Will Kerry win? I had a long conversation with Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh on his 91st birthday (August 20), all as Gaeilge, and asked him if he expected Kerry to win. “Beidh an lá le Ciarraí,” he said. Kerry will carry the day.

THE ROSE OF TRALEE

Kerry will be on the Devil’s Ladder tomorrow. There are plenty loose rocks and the mist will add to the uncertainty of the ascent, but look what’s ahead. The pale moon may be rising on the top of Carrauntoohil, and Sam awaiting the opportunity for us to give ‘The Rose of Tralee’ a lash. It has been a long wait since 2014. Kerry to climb on.

Junior cyclist Daly causes upset at major senior event

Killarney cyclist Lorcan Daly caused a big upset at the National Criterium Championships by nabbing a podium place in the elite senior men’s event. The 18-year-old junior cyclist was up against a tough field brimming with the best senior Irish competitors at the prestigious event, which was held at Greenmount Racecourse in Limerick last Thursday. Although it was senior competition,

junior cyclists were permitted to enter and the race was contested at a savage speed that averaged 46.5kph. Lorcan boxed clever throughout and held his fire until the finish, before grabbing his bronze medal after a mass sprint that

reached 68kph. The event was won by 23-year-old Conor Murnane from UCD Cycling Club, who has won a number of senior races this year. Lorcan is the son of Anne and Stephen from Abbeylands, Milltown. The Killarney Cycling Club man capped a superb week by going on to take third place in the A3/Junior category at Rás Cill Mocheallóg, and then first place in the

A3/Junior category in the Galway Classic. Clubmate Sam Bolger finished third at the event. All of this most recent success continues a recent string of achievements by the Killarney Junior squad with Sam Bolger getting fourth at the Newcastlewest Stage Race at the start of the month and Stefan Caulfield Dreier being selected for Irish team duty at the European Track Championships in the Netherlands. Killarney CC also had four underage riders taking part in the National Championships, which took place in Gorey, Co Galway last weekend. Aaron O’Connor (U12), Cathal Larkin (U14), Donagh O’Connor (U15) and Shayna Daly (U15) all acquitted themselves very admirably and represented their club with pride.

Lee to make Paralympic bow on Sunday morning Killarney’s Jordan Lee will live out what he describes as a “dream come true” when he takes to the stage to represent Ireland at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo on Sunday. The talented Killarney Valley AC athlete will participate in the T47 high jump event, which is scheduled to run from 11.28am to 1.09pm Irish time. Whatever the outcome of the event itself, it has been a whirlwind week or so for the Kerryman. After flying out to Japan last Wednesday, he was notified that he would have the proud honour of being one of Team Ireland’s flag-bearers, alongside powerlifter Britney Arendse. After leading his country out at the

Olympic Stadium on Tuesday, the 21-year-old described it as an “emotional and heartfelt” moment, one which he dedicated to an old teacher of his who said he should “pack in trying to become a professional athlete”. On Sunday, Lee will be going up against a strong field that includes 2016 Paralympic gold medal winner Roderick Townsend (USA), Dallas Wise (USA) and Nishad Kumar (India). Of the nine competitors in the event, 20-year-old Wise is the only one who is younger than Lee. Kumar is the third youngest (22 this year). All of the other high jumpers are aged 26 or above. Although he already has eyes on Parish 2024 and Los Angeles 2028, Lee is eager to challenge now and if he can

match his personal best of 1.95m, it could put him in the running for a medal. That would really be the icing on the cake of what is already a remarkable achievement. The Killarney youngster, who represented the Irish able-bodied basketball team at underage level, is a relative newcomer to his sport but he has already made significant waves in the world of high jumping. After beginning formal training with his coach Tomás Griffin in 2018, he won a bronze medal at the European Para Athletics Championships later that year. He finished fourth at the same event this year, jumping a championship record and season’s best of 1.87m in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Record-breaking Hammer Antonio an FPL must-have West Ham attacker Michail Antonio became the club’s record scorer with a brace against Leicester City last weekend and the Englishman is on course for a record haul of Fantasy Premier League points too. Antonio registered 16 points in The Hammers’ 4-1 win and after his 13-point showing against Newcastle in Gameweek 1, the dynamic forward is unsurprisingly the most coveted player in the game. Almost 700,000 FPL players had transferred in Antonio at the time of going to print, with a high number of participants also drafting in his West Ham teammate Said Benrahma. Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku scored on his second debut for the club and he is also a popular signing ahead of Gameweek 3, as is Irishman Shane Duffy of Brighton and Liverpool defender Konstantinos Tsimikas. Now that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has committed his immediate future to the club after a period of uncertainty, the England captain could be decent option – although some FPL players will be put off by his price tag of £12.3 million. Meanwhile, the FPL Scout has singled out Aston Villa full back Ashley Young (£5 million) as a possible differ-

Young's versatility has boosted his pitch time after his return to the Midlands club. Listed as a defender in Fantasy, he started as a left winger against Watford in Gameweek 1. Young then played at left back in last weekend's 2-0 win over Newcastle United, with Matt Targett (£4.9m) dropping to the bench.

In the Killarney Advertiser League in association with Brian James, Shane O’Connor now leads the way on 203 points. O’Connor earned his 83-point tally thanks in the main to Trent Alexander-Arnold (12), Konstantinos Tsimikas (11), Mason Greenwood (10) and Michail Antonio with Raphinha (7) and Danny Ings (6) also chipping in. Our league leader’s impressive total of 203 points places him 121st in Ireland and number 3,206 in the worldwide rankings. For context, last year over 7 million people played Fantasy Premier League. Denis O’Connor is second in the Killarney Advertiser League on 199 with Killian Brennan, Conor Dillon and Seán Gibson rounding out the top five. Killarney Celtic RESULT: Killarney Athletic 1 Tralee Dynamos 2. Killarney Athletic AFC competed in the U17 Summer Cup Final which took place at the KDL grounds against Tralee Dynamos. In a keenly contested game Dynamos took the lead early in the first half with a long distance shot. Killarney Athletic settled into the game and created some chances. The game continued to be played at a high tempo and in the 2nd half a superb cross by Sam Benson was volleyed to the net by Gavan O’Sullivan. Both sides continued to press and a deflected shot beat the Athletic keeper to make it 2-1. Dynamos were reduced to 10 after a second yellow. Athletic took the game to Dynamos but could not find a second goal. Late in the game a Roko Rujevcan shot was parried by the Dynamos goalkeeper and the resulting shot by Dara O’Shea hit the side netting. Despite further pressure by Athletic, Dynamos held out for the win. Overall a very sporting competitive game and we can now look forward to the new season starting in September.

Killarney Legion GAA U13 BOYS DIV 2 FINAL: Our under 13 Green team had their final Div 2 game on the road in Beaufort. In an exciting game Beaufort took the lead with some early scores before Legion started working their scores. Beaufort's two first half goals kept the game close and Legion led by a single point at half time. Beaufort got a goal followed by a free kick to take control of the tie in the third quarter but Legion made some changes and got two goals in quick succession (with an element of fortitude about them) and two

lovely points in the final quarter to ensure a five-point win and at least a joint Division 2 table topping performance in the County League. Well done to all 21 players who togged out gave their best in the green and white colours. Thanks to the great support we had from Legion families. Well done to the management team of Diarmuid O'Donoghue, Ger Moynihan, Mike Pierce and the Dublin double of Paddy Osborne and Brian O Luanigh. EK U15 DIV 4C FINAL: Legion B 2-8 Kilcummin B 5-4. Legion B were narrowly defeated by Kilcummin B tonight in a cracking East Kerry Division 4C Final played in Derreen, even though lining out without several prominent players.

This Week in the Coiste na nÓg: What a fantastic evening to start off the week as KSRP Chairman Jimmy Denihan, Gearoid Doherty and Maeve Ryan called to visit our GAA 4 ALL Group along with Donal Barry from Kerry Sports Hub. There was lots of excitement and a fabulous evening was had by all. We were delighted to have Oonagh from Ballymac GAA with us who has since told us they plan to start their GAA 4 ALL group next Sunday which is fantastic news. Our U11 boys hosted Kerins O’Rahilly’s in two great games in the final round of the go games on Tuesday night. Our Milltown Castlemaine Teams were fantastic in both games with some fantastic defending and scoring to match. A real feature of their play was the way the ball was moved from backs to forwards through midfield, some excellent team work on show. Our U13 Green Team had a fantastic start to the game against Ballymac on Sunday night to round off the week's action and went into the halfway mark leading by 1-8 to 0-2. Despite a good second half from the home team our U13s played some excellent football all over the field and maintained their lead to win the match 2-13 to 1-8.
