PAGE SIX The GAA Continue To Embarrass Their Members
Words: Adam Moynihan To be honest, I think people are a bit quick to have a cut off the GAA. They’re the definition of an easy target. But they don’t half bring it on themselves at times. The association’s refusal to open up Páirc Uí Chaoimh for a charity soccer match in memory of the late Liam Miller has drawn the ire of people the length and breadth of the country. The GAA have been accused of hiding behind their vague laws when the long and the short of it is they don’t want a soccer game played on one of their pitches. Countless public figures from all codes have rightly lashed the GAA for not agreeing to host the game at their new 45,000-seater stadium, instead forcing organisers to use Turner’s Cross which has a capacity of just 7,000. Lest we forget, the money from tickets sold will go to the family of a young man who died of cancer. It now appears as though the GAA will be pressurised into allowing it anyway. Did the governing body of our national games not foresee the public backlash? It should have been clear from the start that opening the Páirc would have been win-win. Now, even if they do allow it, the damage to their reputation has been done. When Croke Park was opened up to rugby and soccer in 2007, it seemed as though the association’s old attitudes towards foreign sports were consigned to the history books. Gone were the days of banning its
players for playing soccer, or even attending a soccer match. When God Save the Queen was respectfully observed in Croker, it felt like the war was over, and it felt like the war between the GAA and outside games was over too. As someone with a foot firmly in both football and soccer camps, I would say that the situation has improved over the years and I think there is slightly less disdain for soccer in GAA circles nowadays. You even see soccer teams renting out the GAA’s training facilities, something that would have been unthinkable even 20 years ago. We played a friendly with Killarney Athletic on a GAA club’s all weather pitch last year. There were two soccer teams training before us and it was all very progressive - until we were told that we couldn’t wear our soccer jerseys on the pitch. We had to wear bibs instead. It was a bit sanctimonious but, look, baby steps. Football clubs still don’t want their players partaking in soccer but a lot of it is just the fear of losing lads through injury or scheduling conflicts. Generally speaking, the objection isn’t moral anymore. The men in Croke Park, however, still have a bone to pick. As recently as two weeks ago, they decided to fix the Kerry v Galway game for 4pm on a Sunday – exactly the same time the World Cup final between France and Croatia was taking place in Moscow. This was a real slap in the face for fans of football and soccer. As with
the Liam Miller situation, it was a PR disaster for the GAA and it was only exacerbated by comments from a senior official who said that “real fans” would choose the football. It was like the clock had been turned back 40 years. It’s football or soccer and if you pick soccer, you’re a turncoat. The frustrating thing for the majority of GAA fans is that they don’t feel that way. They have no issue with the Liam Miller game being played in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. So why do the suits in Croke Park - “dinosaurs” as Damien Duff called them - continue to embarrass their members? Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t be in favour of completely opening up GAA pitches and sharing them with other sports. I think clubs should be entitled to develop and manage their own grounds and the fact of the matter is that there’s more interest in the GAA (especially in this part of the world), clubs have more members, therefore it makes sense that they attract more investment. The onus should be on other sports to catch up rather than on the GAA to slow down. But it’s nice to be nice. If a local team, be they rugby or soccer or any sport, needs a place to train for a few weeks in the winter, why not help them out? And if someone comes along looking to play a memorial match for a young man who died of cancer, for the love of God, open the door.
Be Careful Down By The Lake… The Algae Is Back It has been a great summer in Killarney but, unfortunately, there was some bad news for the town this week. Following investigations on Lough Leane, Kerry County Council has once again identified algal growth along the shoreline of Killarney’s biggest lake. In a statement released on Tuesday, the council revealed that “precautionary signage” will be erected at various locations around Lough Leane. “Those who frequent the shoreline are being advised to exercise caution and not to allow dogs to enter the water. There are indications of further
warm and humid conditions which may give rise to further algal blooms at other shoreline locations. Kerry County Council will continue to monitor this very closely. “It should be stressed however that Lough Leane is currently considered to be in very good condition and that the development of algal growths is due to the exceptionally warm weather that has been experienced over the last few weeks.” In 2016, a major outbreak of algae was linked to the death of a number of dogs and locals are rightly worried that the latest outbreak could pose a similar
threat. The newly erected signs will warn people to stay away from the blue/green scum. KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL DURING THE MONTHS OF MAY TO SEPTEMBER PERIOD AN ALGAL BLOOM OR DARKISH SCUM MAY APPEAR ON OR CLOSE TO THE SHORELINE. PLEASE EXERCISE CAUTION: • YOU ARE ADVISED TO AVOIDCONTACT WITH THIS BLOOM/SCUM AS IT MAY CAUSE SKIN IRRITATION • KEEP ALL DOGS AWAY FROM THE WATER AND SHORELINE SCUMS

Killarney’s Hospital Beds Could Take Pressure Off UHK Words: Adam Moynihan
SIPTU has asked the government to alleviate the overcrowding problem at University Hospital Kerry in Tralee by transferring patients to Killarney. The trade union’s Branch Organiser for Kerry Hospitals, Donie Doody, says there are unused beds in Killarney and these spaces should be utilised to take pressure off of Kerry’s largest hospital. “At present there are 30 vacant beds in Killarney Community Hospitals,” Mr Doody said. “Why are these beds being left vacant when 20 miles away, in University Hospital Kerry, patients are waiting on trolleys for days at a time? It’s a ludicrous situation. Why is it being allowed to happen? Why is there no policy in place to rectify the situation? Why can patients waiting for the fair deal scheme not be transferred to these vacant beds? “I call on you, Mr Harris, as Minister for Health, to intervene immediately and initiate a policy that would relieve the pressure on beds at UHK and utilise vacant beds available 20 miles away in Killarney. “The people of Kerry deserve and are entitled to have this situation rectified immediately. The beds are available and urgently need to be utilised.” The lack of hospital beds in Ireland has been well documented in recent years. 1,600 were lost in the last decade and Ireland’s rate of 2.8 beds per 1,000 people is well below the norm for OECD countries (4.8). On Wednesday, the nationwide figure for people on trolleys waiting for beds was 396, a 23% increase on the same day last year. There are currently 14 people waiting for beds in Tralee. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO),
which collects the figures, says that the problem is caused by a lack of nursing staff and limited bed capacity in hospitals. In University Hospital Limerick, for example, there are over 70 unfilled nursing vacancies. INMO General Secretary, Phil Ní Sheaghdha, said: “These are genuinely startling figures to see in summertime. It’s only July, and our hospitals are already way over capacity. Nurses will be looking to winter with a sense of dread. A decade ago we’d call this a national emergency, but it’s the new normal in our broken health service.
“Capacity simply has to increase. The government must make it a priority to fill nursing vacancies urgently. That won’t happen without the pay rise that nurses have earned. I worry that if pay stays low and conditions worsen, more nurses will be forced out of our health services.” What do you think? Should Killarney’s vacant hospital beds be used to alleviate the problems at University Hospital Kerry? Let us know by emailing newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

Airports Getting Busier But Dublin Accounts For 96% Of Growth New figures published by the Oireachtas Library & Research Service have revealed that Kerry Airport has seen a 17% rise in passenger numbers since 2012. 335,480 people used the airport in 2017, an increase of roughly 10,000 on the previous 12 months. Despite the steady growth over the past five years, last year’s numbers are still 90,000 short of Kerry Airport’s busiest ever year; 430,000 travellers passed through Farranfore in 2008. In total, 34.4 million passengers used Ireland’s five main airports. Unsurprisingly, Dublin handled the vast majority (85.5%) while passengers to and from Cork and
Shannon accounted for 6.7 and 4.6% respectively. Knock ranked fourth (2.2%) while Kerry was the quietest (1%). 4 in 5 passengers to and from Kerry Airport travelled Ryanair with the remainder made up of Aer Lingus Regional travellers. Luton (111,713) and Stansted (77,693) were the main destinations and sources of arrivals with Frankfurt, Dublin and Alicante completing the top five. Nationally there was an increase of 45.5% in passenger traffic since 2012 although, worryingly, 96.2% of this growth was at Dublin Airport.
News Briefs ... Waters Takes Over As District Court Judge Cork native David Waters has been assigned the role of District Court Judge in Kerry, Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has confirmed. Waters had been serving as an unassigned judge in District 17 since January when his predecessor James O’Con-
nor took a leave of absence due to illness. O’Connor subsequently saw his bid to extend his term by 12 months rejected by former Justice Minister John O’Donoghue. The decision brought an end to his 19year career on the bench.
Waters, who was educated at NUIG, UCC and the Law Society of Ireland, worked as a solicitor in his hometown of Mallow up until his appointment as District Judge in July 2016.

Killarney Remembers The Great Dr Norrie Buckley The town of Killarney was deeply saddened this past week following the passing of popular local doctor Norrie Buckley (nee Comer). Norrie, who was originally from Louth with roots in Firies and Galway, was one of eight children, six girls and two boys. Remarkably, six of the eight Comer children followed in their father’s footsteps and became doctors. Norrie was resident doctor at St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort for 25 years and her death came just days after the facility celebrated its Golden Jubilee. Dr Buckley was also wellknown within the tourism industry. She and her husband Pat took the reins of the Arbutus Hotel on College Street in 1960 and together they developed the family business
into the successful operation it is today. Norrie was a huge fan of the Kerry team and, as per her requests, she was buried in her beloved Kerry jersey. She was also buried with a packet of cigarettes - she smoked right up to her final days last week. Predeceased by her husband Pat and their babies Eoghan, Niamh and Ann, Dr Buckley is survived by her children Mary, Tim, Seán and Úna, daughters-in-law Marina and Carol, sons-in-law Mike and Kieran, and grandchildren Pat, Brendan, Jessie, Killian, Julia, Eva, Lily, Emer, Róisín, Ronan, Ciara, Dara and Eamonn. She is further survived by her sisters Maureen and Dodie, brother Gerry and so many other relatives and friends.

The Chatroom
Fundraiser To Bring Mother Of Two Home
Damien Switzer Talks Killarney Magazine & John McShain This week in The Chatroom we welcome back graphic design guru, local historian and all around good guy Mr Damien Switzer. Damien popped in to talk about two different but interlinked topics. Firstly, the 2018 Killarney Magazine is in the shops now and Damien was the main design force behind the free premium tourist magazine, which tells tourists all about our amazing town. It details the best spots to eat, the best places to drink, all the activities that Killarney has to offer and also delves into a little bit of the history of Killarney.
Which leads to the second topic that Damien called in to chat about. Two pages of the Killarney Magazine has been dedicated to John McShain, the man who gave Killarney back to the people of Killarney, and Damien is appalled that for all the man gave us, there is not even a blade of grass named after him. Damien wants to set this right and get something done to honour the man who has given us so much. This latest episode of The Chatroom is online tonight at 9pm on our website www. killarneyadvertiser.ie and also on our Facebook page.
A special fundraising event will be held in Killarney next Monday, July 30 for a young mother of two who has been diagnosed with Mixed Cellularity Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Kerri Bird, whose family run the Euroshow funfair that visits the town every year, spent her summers in Killarney and it’s hoped that this event will raise funds to help bring her home to Ireland. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Kerri’s sister April said Christmas is the aim. “We’re hoping to bring April home for Christmas although that’s not definite at the moment. It will depend on her treatment but, either way, we
want to bring her back as soon as possible.” Kerri, who is a Montessori teacher, moved to New Zealand six years ago with her Kiwi husband Jonathan. The pair have two young children, a three-year-old son, Hudson, and a twoyear-old daughter, Lexi. The hog roast party will take place in the Great Southern Hotel, Killarney on Monday, July 30 at 4.30pm. With delicious food and some wonderful raffle prizes up for grabs, it promises to be a great evening for a very worthy cause. Tickets, which are €30 or €15 for children aged under 10, can be purchased by calling into Bird’s Euroshow Funfair or by emailing aprilbirdthistle@gmail.com.
Plunkett Street was rocking on Tuesday night when a surprise gig erupted right in the middle of the street. After appearing as special guest at both Aslan’s Iveagh Garden shows in Dublin last week, local accordion maestro Liam O’Connor invited his good friend Christy Dignam and his family down to Killarney for a few days. After spending most of Tuesday taking in the splendour of Killarney on the lakes and at the Traditional Farms in Muckross, Liam and Christy came up with a unique idea, a flash mob gig on the pedestrianised Plunkett Street that night at 9.30pm! When the music kicked off, crowds weren’t long gathering outside The Porterhouse with Liam in full flow backed by his son Oisín and daughter Saoirse. With Oisín keeping the beat on the drums, while impressively simultaneously playing guitar at times, and Saoirse’s piano playing backing Liam’s instrumentals to perfection, the atmosphere was magical on Plunkett St. Locals and tourists alike were bewitched by the incredible impromptu show! How could things get better than
this? Well, how about the appearance of a genuine Irish musical legend? Christy Dignam was introduced by Liam to rapturous applause and instantly silenced the crowd with a haunting rendition of The Green Fields of France before belting out one of Aslan’s mega hits, This Is, which got the mesmerised crowd singing along. The Killarney Advertiser’s own Kieran Healy was called out of the crowd by Liam to play some guitar and add some vocals to U2’s classic I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For. When we asked Kieran if he enjoyed the slot, he said: “Singing in front of one of the most iconic Irish vocalists ever, I’m not going to lie, I was feeling the pressure but it went down well. Fair play to Liam for organising such an amazing spectacle!” The flash gig finished with Christy once again taking vocals for arguably Aslan’s most famous song, Crazy World. It sparked a mass sing-a-long which I’m sure anyone who was there on the night will ever forget. In what other town in Ireland could this possibly happen?

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Brexit: The North Is Like Spoilt Child I haven’t bothered much with the bog that is Brexit. Quite simply the ground has been too soft, and there has been nothing clear except the fog of speculation. And about the best thing I have seen on it has been Neil Delamere’s comedy Soft Border Patrol, surreally anticipating the issues. But the ground is hardening now, the way and the perils of the way are emerging. The clearing began with Boris, the until-recently British foreign secretary. I am probably the only journalist and Irish person in the world who likes Boris Johnson. I love his straight talking and I particularly like his use of the English language. It is always enchanting and mesmerising to listen to him. It took Boris to isolate the single issue that has us all bogged down: the North. The North of Ireland was the tail that wags the dog when it comes to a deal for England with the European Union, Boris said in June. Britain was allowing the whole of its agenda to be dictated by “this folly”. “It is beyond belief that we’re allowing the tail to wag the dog,” Boris said at a private dinner. I would suggest that in Ireland’s approach to Brexit, too, the tail wags the dog. And I would go further and say the North has had undue influence on the affairs of the peoples of both these islands for far too long. In our handling of Brexit we have concentrated on “the hard and soft border”, instead of on the far more important trade between this country and mainland UK. Why? The North’s demands are perennial, and they are perennially divided. There it is ever only a question whether theirs will involve the “hard” approach of the Armalite, or the “soft” of walkout and insult. There was an immediate and predictable Pavlovian backlash to Boris’ statement on this side of the British Isles. And there has been a rather silly hardening since with threats from here of closing down our airspace. That was from Leo when told our two or three fishing boats might not be allowed into English waters. Shades of Rockall! Then we have Kenmare’s Senator Daly again beating the
drum of Irish unity, this time saying, like German unification, it could make economic sense. I wish the Kenmare senator would draw up a blueprint for the economic unification of Munster and Leinster and look at how we might get our fair share down here in Cork and Kerry in terms of roads and broadband and cities and investment in colleges and hospitals. That would make economic sense too, Senator Daly! I am not sure uniting the North with any place can work. It is now like a spoilt child over-indulged by two sets of fighting grandparents - by Éire go Brách and Grandpa John go Bull, throwing the toys it gets in bucket loads from Uncle Sam out of the pram at every whim, and holding all its relatives to hostage or it will murder us all or worse! That goes for both sides. They get far too much attention from us, the UK and the US. And now the EU is molly coddling! It’s about time we all got sense in the 26 counties, and stop the tiptoeing around what is essentially bullying. And they might all get sense up there! When you think of it, before any Scottish planters turned up, or any Orange King Billy on a horse, or any order, or tricolour or even Christianity itself, the red-handed province of Ulster was always difficult and different to the other three more reasonable provinces. Even in mythology! Sinn Féin, of course, have a golden opportunity to wag the dog one last time. Just last week one of their representatives complained loudly to me at Kerry County Council about the ill Fianna Fáil MEP, Brian Crowley, not occupying his seat in Brussels for two years. This was “disgraceful,” he said. Sinn Féin haven’t occupied their well-paid MP seats in Westminster ever. Are they prepared even now to bite the bullet and take the hard decisions and take their expenses paid travel to London if Irish interest with Brexit is on the line? They have too long left the field to the unionists for reasons few can remember anymore. And there hasn’t been an assembly in their own province with 19 months over a fit of pique about grants and sta-
tus of the Irish language. And what else, I forget! And as for the unionists, if we Irish, or the English, don’t solve the problems they identify, then we are neglecting them. But if we do make an attempt, we are interfering! The North badly needs neglecting. Meanwhile our own Cllr John Joe Culloty suggests we might at least look at leaving the EU and get over our “old enemy” attitude and cosy up with England, for the sake of our agriculture and heavy engineering industries. It seems we are caught between Scylla and Charybdis with this Brexit. If we steer our ship too close to England, we will lose the EU. If we abandon England because of our obsession with the North and the border and steer too close to the EU, reopened divisions with the Brits will deepen further and all this island’s trade will suffer. The problem is in 1970 we got out from under one tyrant, but only partially, and steered straight for the protection of another – Europe. We never fully got out from England and this is not just because the six counties are still British. We in the 26 piggy-back their laws, their ports, their institutions. We would have no lifeboats without the RNLI. The National Union of Journalists is still English as is the Soroptimists! There is the royal college of this and the royal college of that. We are now looking at finally investing in Rosslare as a major Europort, since we won’t be able to piggy-back the UK ports and use their country as a landbridge to Europe. We can’t leave the EU for two basic reasons. Firstly, the euro is our common currency. Then there is tourism. While the decline in the English tourist is being lamented, and is felt to be threatened by Brexit, what is being ignored is almost as many tourists now come from Europe as came once from the UK. In 1983 when we got a total of 1.779 million tourists, 1.129 million of them came from GB – just 298,00 from Europe. Last year we got over 9 million tourists – 3.442 million were Brits and 3,258 million were from Mainland Europe. And what is interesting is the four-year graph shows that the British tourist numbers were going down, ever before Brexit, while the continent is upward. Why aren’t those facts on the table?
Greek Fires
The fires in Greece, forest fires, with whole neighbourhoods destroyed, have been deeply unnerving to watch. There is something terrible, almost Homeric about the co-incidence of the approach of the red moon, the uncontrollable rage of the elements and the awful sight of people fleeing into the sea. I am reminded of scenes from the Iliad. Anyone with even a passing acquaintance with ancient Greek literature and myth will have memory stirred. But this is not just Prometheus unbound and it is not just a Greek tragedy – it is also a modern European one. Word is beginning to come out about closer to home matters: the decimation of the public services in Greece following EU imposed austerity that included the running down of the fire service, the roads service, the public departments. And for what was Greece
brought to its knees? To pay the major European banks who lent recklessly and encouraged reckless borrowing and speculation in Greece, in this town, and elsewhere. We are not that far from the Greek tragedy, let me remind you. Our National Park, where for decades residents surrounding it were nearly burnt out of house and home by mad commonage burning by individuals, has just four wildlife rangers now. But for the bravery of our fire service it, too, would have gone. Our roads crews are a fifth of what they were. We have “volunteers” doing the work of full time employees - edging paths and cutting bushes around town and picking up litter. We have more than 4,000 children in emergency accommodation in this country as a whole. We have a young generation that will be burdened with debt for the rest of their working lives to pay back
the millions that went God knows where. We have older people that will have to work longer. We are not that far from Greece and, like Greece, we rely more and more on tourism. So where is the emergency coordinated European response to the fires in Greece? There hasn’t been one is the
answer. It was up to individual countries, like Spain, to rush in to help. As I said earlier in this column: we are caught now between Scylla and Charybdis. Those siren rocks. And maybe the best approach, like Ulysses, is to tie ourselves to the mast, pull the wool over everyone’s eyes, and ears, and drive on!

Locals And Officials Have Their Say On Our McShain Campaign Words: Adam Moynihan
The Killarney Advertiser’s campaign to have American philanthropist John McShain officially recognised for his contribution to the town is gaining momentum. Local residents, businesspeople and officials have all voiced their opinions in the past two weeks and we are pleased to report that the reaction so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Historian Damien Switzer first called for McShain, who purchased and then returned for free a large section of what we now know as the National Park, to be acknowledged by renaming Killarney House & Gardens the John McShain Memorial Park. He also suggested erecting a statue in his honour. Since Damien’s article was published in Killarney Magazine, locals, many of whom had never heard of the Philadelphia native, have been united in their disbelief that McShain has not already been honoured. We took to the streets of Killarney to find out what the people think. Should Killarney House & Gardens be renamed John McShain Memorial Park? Should a statue be erected in McShain’s honour? 1. John Sheahan (Mayor of Killarney): What the Advertiser is saying is spot on. I definitely think a statue would be a suitable way of recognising what John McShain contributed to the people of Killarney. There’s no doubt that he was a very generous man and he should be remembered. It’s remiss of us not to have addressed this already. A statue at the house looking down at the lake would be very apt. 2. Kate O’Leary (proprietor of The Laurels Bar): Killarney House and Gardens is a veritable treasure. It is THE hidden gem of Killarney, a little oasis of calm in the heart of our vibrant town. What incredible vision John McShain had and I think it would be a wonderful expression of our gratitude to erect a statue in his honour. There are lovely recesses along Mission Road, any of which would be an ideal location for such for a tribute. 3. Paul O’Neill (President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce): I read Damien’s article with great interest and speaking to people in town, he has really struck a chord with locals. I think that John McShain and the family certainly deserve recognition from Killarney for their incredible generosity. I probably wouldn’t like to change ‘Killarney House & Gardens’ but without a doubt we as a town should acknowledge in a very public way this invaluable gift. 4. Nicole Rodriguez (tourist from Rhode Island, USA): I had never heard of him but it sounds like he did a lot for the town. I think tourists from the States would like to see a fellow American honoured in Killarney. A statue would be nice! 5. Pat Dawson (General Manager, Killarney House & Gardens): I have read the article in last week’s Advertiser and I am glad that the story of John McShain is being shared with your readers. Currently, our guides provide visitors to Killarney House with details of the life and times of John McShain and his vision and generosity in making sure that the unrivalled landscapes of the Killarney Valley. The suggestion of having a bust or a statue of John McShain on display in or at Killarney House is one that I am sure our Department would look favourably upon and we would be happy to cooperate and support any local efforts to that end. The suggestion of re-naming the area around Killarney House is unlikely to be a runner, however. The entity which is the National Park, which includes the Muckross Estate and the Kenmare Estate, has an official status and I do not foresee any changes in that regard.
1.
6. Micheál O’Donoghue (O’Donoghue Ring Hotels): I would be very much in agreement with honouring John McShain in Killarney. The ideal opportunity was when the Cherry Tree Walk was replanted but I strongly believe that there should be something to recognise his contribution. 7. David Neeson (local man): To be honest, I didn’t know who John McShain was until I read the article. I’d be strongly in favour of honouring him… I’m surprised there isn’t already something named after him. I do a lot of running down around 4. the Demesne and I can’t imagine what the town would be like without the National Park. 8. Micheal Healy-Rae TD: I think a life size statue inside the Golden 7. Gates would be a great way to recognise and honour him for what he gave to the town of Killarney.

The star is said to have been whisked away to a top secret location in the north of the city. Filming began four days ago, with the cast including the likes of Russell Brand, Matthew Goode and Michael Cane. The film will follow a group of children on holiday in Cornwall. Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues
CHANGES TO FAIR DEAL SCHEME The Government have announced in the last number of days proposed changes to the Fair Deal Scheme. In particular the changes will apply to those owning a business or owning a family farm. Currently those availing of the Fair Deal Scheme must contribute up to 80% of their income and up to 7.5% of the value of any assets towards their cost of care. In accordance with current rules, the value of a person’s home is only included in the financial assessment for the first three years for their period in care. Proposals now approved by Government appear to extend this three-year cap for farms and businesses. Conditions will apply. The farm or business will have to be operated by a member of family for six-year period. The exact terms and conditions will be set out in legislation which will be brought before the House of the Oireachtas in the Autumn but the heads of any
bill will deal with the above changes. At present the first €36,000.00, or €72,000.00 of assets for a couple, is not counted in the financial assessment. Where assets include land and property the 7.5% contribution based on such assets may be deferred or paid after one’s death. This is known as the Nursing Home Loan. At present a three-year cap applies to the dwelling house and is now proposed to extend this to farms and businesses under certain terms and conditions. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. O’Flaherty Memorial Society Heading For Rome The period from mid-summer 2018 to mid-summer 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of the Rome Escape Line activities in Nazi occupied Rome. It began in early 1943 after Monsignor Hugh’s involvement with the Allied POW camps came to a Mussolini-enforced end and he then began finding safe places for anti-fascists on the run. He was joined by Lt Col Sam Derry in the autumn of 1943 and together they ran the Rome Escape Line, until Rome was liberated on June 4, 1944, saving over 6,000 lives in the process. To mark this very special anniversary period, the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society are planning a commemorative tour to Rome, hopefully taking in all the relevant sites such as The Vatican, a General Papal Audience, German College, Via Rasella, Ardeatine Caves Massacre, Gestapo Headquarters, the British Embassy and the Abbey of Monte Casino. The tentative dates for the tour are departing Dublin on Friday, March 29, 2019 and returning Wednesday, April 3. As always with these tours, places are limited to c.50 and while bookings will not be taken until the dates, itinerary and costs are finalised in early autumn. The Memorial Society are now seeking expressions of interest from anyone who feels they might like to join the tour. When plans are finalised, places on the tour will in the first instance be offered to those who have formally expressed an interest. Expressions of interest can be recorded by emailing your name, address, phone and email details as well as the number of places you might be interested in to oflahertysociety2008@gmail.com, or by texting the same information to 083 3973301. Offers of places will be made based on the dates received of the expressions of interest (i.e. on a first come, first served basis).

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Greek Minister: Illegal Building Contributed To Wildfires Greek Defence Minister Panos Kammenos has said that illegal construction contributed to one of the country’s worst-ever wildfire disasters. He said building by residents between wooded areas was a “crime” that had resulted in blocking escape routes. Mr Kammenos was confronted by angry locals as he visited areas devastated by fires east of Athens this week. At least 83 people died and search teams fear they will find further victims as dozens more are missing. Dozens of rescue workers searching a cliffside in the seaside town of Mati on Thursday found more human remains. Many of the victims were caught close to the cliff as the flames spread rapidly, whipped up by winds as high as 120km/h. Relatives have been providing their DNA to help identify the bodies of the victims. Some 60 people are still being treated in hospital, 11 of them in intensive care. Arriving in the village of Mati, where many
people died, Mr Kammenos was surrounded by residents who accused him of abandoning them. The seaside town of Mati, east of Athens, has been the hardest-hit community “You let people burn for no reason. You left us to the mercy of God,” a woman told the minister, who was accompanied by the local mayor and the head of the military. One man told the BBC he had reached the fire station to ask for help, and found firefighters unaware of the blaze. Another resident complained that people had been advised to dive into the sea to escape, when most of the elderly were unable to reach the sea in the first place. Many of the survivors were saved by the sea, but dozens of victims were unable to reach the water. Mr Kammenos, a combative figure who leads the nationalist Independent Greeks, rejected accusations that the government had failed to protect its citizens.
Trump Corner Trump Accuses Twitter Of “Illegal” Shadow Banning President Donald Trump accused Twitter yesterday of “discriminatory and illegal practice,” vowing in a tweet to “look into” the matter. Investors, already unnerved by Facebook’s plunge, shed Twitter shares. The stock was down 4.3% in early trading Thursday, including a 1% additional decline immediately after Trump’s comments. Trump called out a practice commonly called “shadow banning,” in which Twitter limits visibility in search results for particular accounts. Trump, following a Vice report about the practice, claimed the company is limiting the reach of “prominent Republicans.” The Vice story claims Republicans such as party chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and Donald Trump Jr’s spokesperson were among those being de-emphasised in search results. A spokesperson for Twitter declined to comment on Trump’s tweet but told CNBC in an email: “As we have said before, we do not ‘shadowban.’ We are aware that
Never fails to entertain
some accounts are not automatically populating in our search box, and shipping a change to address this. The profiles, tweets and discussions about these accounts do appear when you search for them. To be clear, our behavioural ranking doesn’t make judgments based on political views or the substance of tweets.” Twitter is a private company and can moderate its platform as it sees fit. Trump did not specify which law he believed Twitter was violating. Twitter saw similar claims of conservative censorship last aurumn, after suspending several extreme-right accounts in an effort to reduce hate speech and threats of violence on the site. Republican lawmakers have also repeatedly accused Facebook of silencing conservative voices, holding several congressional hearings to address the matter in which representatives for Facebook, Twitter and YouTube denied any political bias. “Our purpose is to serve the conversation, not to make value judgments on personal beliefs,” Nick Pickles, Twitter’s global lead for public policy strategy, told Congress last week.
Barber Who Refused To Cut Transgender Man’s Hair Ordered To Pay €5K A Dublin barber has been ordered to pay €5,000 to a transgender man after it was found to have discriminated against him by refusing to give him “a short back and sides”. Lee McLoughlin told the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) that he asked to have his hair cut at Charlie’s Barbers on September 24 last, but the barber, mistakenly believing he was a woman, refused. McLoughlin told the barber that he just wanted a “short back and sides” but that the barber replied “we don’t cut ladies hair, I’m sorry”. McLoughlin said that he then told the barber that he was a transgender man. He alleged that the barber proceeded to shake his head and said: “I am sorry, we can’t cut ladies’ hair. It’s a contract that we have with another hairdresser around the corner, so if we cut a woman’s hair, we will be fined.” McLoughlin had arrived at the barbers at 1.05pm, and proceeded to take a seat with a number of other men queuing, waiting 25 minutes before it was his turn. He told the WRC hearing that the comments by the barber were uttered in front of a number of customers, caused huge embarrassment and distress to him, and that he left the premises “in shock”. McLoughlin said that the incident has greatly affected him and caused him
stress, shame and embarrassment. He claimed that he was discriminated against under the Equal Status Act by Charlie’s Barbers on the grounds of gender when he was refused a haircut. The WRC upheld his claim, with adjudication officer Gerard McMahon ordering the respondent in the case, Paula Smith of Charlie’s Barbers, to pay out €5,000 to him. McMahon concluded: “On the balance of the evidence presented … I conclude that the complainant was treated differently because he was transgender when he was refused a haircut by the respondent. This amounts to discrimination on the grounds of gender.” When questioned at the WRC hearing as to what might have led the barber to take the stance that he did, McLoughlin responded that he was “not sure” as he “was dressed as a male” and was trying his “best to appear male”. McLoughlin said that the refusal by the barber necessitated an emergency counselling session. When asked about redress at hearing, McLoughlin responded that the case “was not about money”. He explained it was about the principle and the precedent set on behalf of those who might find themselves in a similar scenario in the future. The barbers apologised for the incident and noted that action had been taken to prevent a recurrence.

Ferguson Speaks Publicly For First Time Since Brain Surgery
Sir Alex Ferguson thanked the medical staff who saved his life as he spoke publicly for the first time on Thursday having suffered a brain haemorrhage and undergone emergency surgery in early May. The 76-year-old former Manchester United manager looked healthy and his voice remained steady during a 48 second video message released by the Old Trafford club in which he also pledged to watch José Mourinho’s side play live during the coming football season. “Hello. Just a quick message first of all to thank the medical staff at Macclesfield, Salford Royal and Alexandra hospitals,” said the most successful football manager in the history of the British football, from what appeared to be his garden. “Believe me, without those people, who gave me such great care, I would not be sitting here today. So, thank you from me and my family. Thank you very much.” Ferguson, wearing a smart lilac shirt and speaking directly into the camera, took the op-
portunity to also offer heartfelt thanks to those well-wishers who inundated both his family and old club with messages of support after he suffered the brain haemorrhage at his house in Cheshire nearly three months ago. Having been rushed into hospital, Ferguson spent a few days in intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital. He subsequently remained an in-patient for a fortnight ahead of a return home in early June since when the Scot has continued his recovery in private. “It has made me feel so humble, as have all the messages I have had from all over the world, wishing me the best,” said Ferguson, his gaze unwavering during the short film released on United’s official Twitter account. “The good wishes do resonate very, very strongly with me. So thank you for that support you have given me. And lastly, I will be back later in the season to watch the team. In the meantime, all the best to José and the players. Thank you very much.”
McGregor To Undergo Anger Management Treatment
UFC fighter Conor McGregor has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in a deal with prosecutors to avoid jail time. McGregor had faced multiple criminal charges stemming from an altercation in April with other fighters. As part of his deal he is required to undergo anger management treatment. The plea will not affect his US work visa. In a statement outside the New York City courthouse, the 30-year-old thanked the judge and prosecutors “for allowing me to move forward”. He will also be required to fulfil five days of community service and, in exchange, will be cleared of criminal charges. McGregor had been facing 12 criminal charges related to the incident at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April 5. The charges against McGregor had in-
cluded menacing, assault resulting in injury, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. The most serious charges carried a maximum sentence of seven years. In a two-sentence statement outside the courthouse, he said: “I just want to say I’m thankful to the DA [District Attorney] and the judge for allowing me to move forward.” “I want to say to my friends, my family, my fans: thank you for the support.” His fans had gathered outside the court, with several holding signs expressing their support for the “champ”. In April McGregor was filmed throwing a metal dolly into a window of a bus parked at a Barclay’s Center loading bay. As a condition of the deal with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, he was required to pay full restitution to the bus company, which he has already fulfilled.
Wedding Plaques Into Space Ryanair Cancels 20 Flights Ahead Of Strike eight millimetres. The plaques will then be loaded onto miniature cubic satellites, which can hold several hundred plaques, and be released into orbit. They will join the tens of thousands of satellites, man-made objects and space junk already orbiting the Earth. Astronauts will take photos
of the plaques being released and send them to the couples. Explaining the reason behind the company, Warpspace’s president Toshihiro Kameda tells Yomiuri Shimbun: “I hope couples will think about space and pledge their infinite love to each other.” Warpspace says it will carry out its first launch in 2019. The cost of the service is 30,000 Japanese Yen (£205; $270) and is exclusively offered to couples who marry at Tsukuba’s Okura Frontier Hotel.
Ryanair has said today that it has cancelled 20 of its flights to and from Ireland next Friday, August 3 as pilots from the union Fórsa are set to strike for a fourth day. It said that all 3,500 customers affected by the cancellations have already been notified by email or text message. It is set to offer refunds or re-accommodate passengers on other Ryanair flights to and from the UK. Ryanair, in a statement on Twitter, also accused Fórsa of rejecting to meet yesterday to discuss its planned job cuts from Dublin in October. Yesterday morning, the airline announced plans to cut 20% of its Irish-based fleet this winter, and cited the ongoing strikes in its statement. In the afternoon, Fórsa said pilots would strike for a fourth day since this dispute began. The
union warned further strike action would follow later into August unless the company “changed tack” and “negotiated in good faith” on issues around base transfers and related matters. The union claimed that it had written to Ryanair last Friday to Ryanair to say it was available for negotiations but that there has still not been any response to this.

Welcome
T
o July’s Home and living. Where did the month go? The weather has been amazing and it’s been such a joy not to have to wear a coat for a month! We could get used to this. I’ve been a busy bee this month and I got the nicest compliment… One of the producers from RTÉ’s Home of the Year wanted to put my house forward after seeing it on Instagram. We have just torn down our garages to rebuild so we didn’t say ‘yes’ but what a compliment! Our featured house this month is a lotto dream, such a dream location! Top picks: I am loving the black outdoor cushions I picked up in Deck the Halls. So cute, need some more! We are looking at entrances, hallways and boot rooms this month. It’s the first thing people see in your home and it makes such an impression, good or bad! If yours needs a makeover, we’ve got some inspiration for you.
Yours in decorating,

BOOTROOM OBSESSION
T
he poor little utility has been transformed. Even this small functional room can’t escape, inspired by old country houses and programs like Downton Abbey, it was once a functional part of the large country house where the boots were stored and cleaned by the numerous staff. Today it’s all about making this functional space inviting, storing the clutter and having a neat, organised space to come home to. But family and friends tend to use the back door a lot in the country so it’s also about an inviting entrance. It’s all about painted, matching storage and if your budget doesn’t rise to the in-frame, bespoke presses you see in all the magazines as the room is not to ‘grand old house’ proportions, we have some inspiration. All you need is some DIY shelves, a coat rack and bench. The plus side is when you beautify this room you actually want to keep it tidy!

WHAT MAKES A HALLWAY TIMELESS? Interiors, just like people, age. Nonetheless, like people, it’s all about making sure they age with grace. Or could we aim for improving with age? So how can we achieve this? Leave flashy, trendy patterns and the colours of the moment behind. Instead stick to neutral and jeweltoned textures. This doesn’t mean boring! More textures over pattern. Design staples from tuft to classic stripes, black and white themes in any form of artwork to flooring. Mixed metals with clean lines are always a good idea. Especially through lighting. And, finally, making the space personal to you will guarantee that from year to year it will look great and not fade with trends.

27.07.18 CACI’s treatments have been voted the most effective anti-ageing treatments available, says Jill O’Donoghue of Killarney Toning & Beauty
Caci Non-Surgical Facelift Facial
The world’s most advanced non-surgical face and body treatment, delivering results without surgery. What is it? The CACI Non-Surgical Facelift treatment has been acclaimed by the international media as probably the most exciting beauty development of the last decade. CACI is an innovative anti-ageing treatment that tones and tightens facial muscles and assists in smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. CACI also specialises in treatments for acne, scarring, pigmentation and wrinkles. CACI’s award-winning treatments use the very latest pioneering technologies and have been voted the most effective anti-ageing treatments available. Tiny electrical impulses firm and tone sagging facial muscles and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Especially effective around the jaw line
and eye areas. Red light therapy effectively plumps out deep lines and wrinkles providing a needle free alternative to collagen injections and other dermal fillers. A special skin peeling handset, microdermabrasion, delivers a controlled and precise removal of superficial dead skin revealing a softer more youthful complexion. Light therapy has a bio-stimulatory and anti-bacterial healing action on the skin cells. CACI Hydra-Lift Treatment An intensive skin hydration and firming treatment, using a mask which is infused with collagen, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C and E. Dehydrated and environmentally damaged skin is quenched, whilst deep lines and wrinkles are plumped out, leaving the skin looking radiant, softer and more youthful. Garden Magic Words: Debby Looney
Plenty Of Plants Can Tolerate Droughty Conditions This year truly is an exceptional year weather-wise. For gardeners, there is as much to grumble about as there is to be happy for! Of course, I realise the garden is unimportant compared to farm life, but many vegetables are just not doing as well as they should. All types of beans, however, love the sun, as well as chard, broccoli and Asian greens. Lettuce can become bitter, though it only needs a little water to improve the taste. There is still time to sow Asian greens such as mizuna or pak choi as they are quick crops. Spinach, cabbage, turnips and rocket can all be sown outside. Now is also the time to sow spring onions outside for a nice crop in April. In the ornamental garden, plants which tolerate these droughty conditions are plentiful. Most plants which originate from Australia tolerate high levels of sunshine and extended periods of dry weather. For example, eucalyptus, Callistemon, (bottlebrush), leptospermum and acacia are all suitable. These are also excellent choices if you have a dry bank or sandy soil. Most silver foliaged plants are also good for sandy soil or dry conditions, for example olearia, lavender, rosemary, senecio, ozotham-
nus and cotton lavender, or santolina. As a rule of thumb, oily plants, such as Manuka, eucalyptus, rosemary, thyme and other scented herbs are often from dry regions such as the Mediterranean or Australia and are therefore used to arid conditions. Cypress, pine and junipers are good choices in the line of conifers, and dianthus, perovskia, verbena and hebes give great colour in spite of little water. For baskets and window boxes there is also plenty of choice. Geraniums thrive in dry conditions, as do begonias. Santolina, portulaca, gazania, nicotiana and cosmos are not very thirsty plants. I know it is not a given that all future summers will be as dry as this one has been, but in any case it is useful to know which plants will tolerate sandy or shallow soils! A question I am often asked this summer is: when do I need to water? Pots etc are obvious, but if it has been dry for a while people
can panic about their shrubs. It takes quite some time before soil dries out but if you are worried test it by digging down to the depth of one shovel. If it is damp, there is no need to water. There has been a hose ban in place but grey water is fine for plants (that is, the water from dishwashing, bathing and showering). In the short term there is no problem in using this water, however take care there are no disinfectants in it. It is not recommended to use grey water on crops as there may be contaminants or bacteria in it. Collecting rain water is something which is recommended regardless of hose bans or water charges as rain water is softer and much more beneficial to plants – especially houseplants, which dislike the chlorine in our tap water.

A great photo of where I spent most of my youth. In the foreground my old alma mater, The Sem, less the new buildings, tennis courts, alleys and where the sports hall is now were old sheds full of turf. Though I started in the old mercy, the new mercy school and the new Mon are not yet built. Jimmy The Masters is but a few sheds. The old mercy secondary school is visible through the trees (garda station) and by the convent, are the walled garden and orchard... where I procured many an apple. In the background on the right is the old sandpit (High Street carpark), missing are some houses on St.Ann’s Road. Visible is the old dispensary at the entrance to the Parish Hall (Old Fever Hospital), most of Lewis road, the new Library, Bishop Moynihan’s Crescent to Daltons Ave (my home) to Brendan’s Tce all yet to be constructed. The Fitzgerald’s Stadium is shown with just a simple wall around it and the fields are full of horses and cattle.

Hamilton Claims Unlikely German Grand Prix Win After Vettel Crashes Lewis Hamilton triumphed in a frantic German Grand Prix, climbing from 14th to finish first after Sebastian Vettel threw victory away after a crash 15 laps from the end. Heavy rain played havoc late on at the Hockenheimring as Vettel misjudged a basic entry into turn 52 and slid over the gravel into the barriers in a potentially pivotal moment in the championship race. Vettel, a four-time Formula One champion, seemed in control for a large part of the race. He was livid with himself, kicking the gravel in frustration as he stepped out his car. His mishap opened the door wide open for Hamilton in fourth at the time of the crash, having started from 14th on the grid because of a hydraulic problem in qualifying. Vettel’s incident led to a safety car coming out for several laps. There was confusion at Mercedes, even with Hamilton out in front, as the Briton ignored orders from his team to pit. But Hamilton’s gamble paid off as he secured a victory that sees him regain the lead in the driver’s championship. But Hamilton’s victory was in doubt after the race when he was summoned to the stewards to explain an aborted pit stop. Hamilton was first instructed by his team to pit in chaotic circumstances as rain fell late in the race before he pulled out at the last second, cutting across a grass verge. But Hamilton escaped punishment to keep his victory. For Vettel, who finished ahead of Hamilton at the
British Grand Prix two weeks ago, his dream of winning a first Grand Prix at Hockenheim turned to a nightmare. He now has 171 points to Hamilton’s 188, with next weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix set to be another vital one for both drivers.
Show
Motor Shows Are Dead, Says VW’s Diess The Detroit Auto Show will move to June in 2020 in a bold effort to stay alive, but the Volkswagen Group’s Chairman, Dr Herbert Diess, cautioned the effort may be in vain. Diess has warned that there may not be a future for traditional motor shows, with events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed and off-site stand-alone exhibitions taking their place. “Motor shows are dead,” Diess insisted during the Goodwood Festival of Speed recently. “They are a product of the 1960s and they are not as relevant anymore. They’re not delivering what we want and they’re not delivering what car buyers want.” The Detroit show, the traditional season opener for the world’s car industry, has been under pressure since the global financial crisis in 2008 and has never recovered. It has effectively been kept alive and relevant by the European carmakers, but Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have already announced their absence from next January’s 2019 edition. Brands like Jaguar, Land Rover, Mitsubishi and even Bentley and Lamborghini have skipped the show for years. The Detroit show isn’t the only one under pressure. The Frankfurt and Paris shows, which rotate every year, have suffered immensely. The entire Volkswagen Group has pulled out of this year’s Paris show, along with Fiat Chrysler (including the Jeep, Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands), BMW, Ford Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Subaru and Volvo. So, where will the big car reveals take place in future? If that car industry hasn’t enough to worry about, now they must find new and innovative ways to launch new products. Who knows, the next big product launch may be more local than we think.

To The Rescue
Fossa youngster saves shambolic Kerry Words: Adam Moynihan Kerry’s 2018 All-Ireland dream is somehow still alive, in spite of a frankly shambolic performance in round two of the inaugural Super 8s on Sunday. The Kingdom were completely outplayed and outmanoeuvred by Monaghan in Clones and it took a moment of magic from 19-year-old wonder kid David Clifford to rob a point at the death. It was more than Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s side deserved and many fans were left scratching their heads at a number of contentious calls that the management made both before and during the crucial fixture. In the build up to the game, speculation was rife that major changes were imminent and so it proved as Shane Murphy, Jason Foley, Brian ó Beaglaoich, Killian Young (suspended) and James O’Donoghue made way for Brian Kelly, Ronan Shanahan, Mark Griffin, Tom O’Sullivan and Kieran Donaghy. Murphy didn’t have his best game against Galway but his exclusion still came as a big surprise to a lot of people, myself included. I was naturally delighted to see my Legion clubmate Brian Kelly getting another opportunity and he did well as always but this practice of constantly changing goalkeepers is a nonsense in my opinion. I know from experience, in both football and soccer, that you want solidity and consistency at the back and that starts with your keeper. I’ve been on a couple of teams who have been fortunate enough to have more than one good option in goal and I accept that it’s hard for managers to choose just one, but it has to be done. If Murphy is your first choice, stick with him. If Kelly is your first choice, stick with him. As I’ve said before, we’re lucky to have two top class keepers in Kerry at the moment (we had three before Kealy retired) but
Monaghan 1-17 Kerry 1-17 there can only be one number one. This chopping and changing is no good for anyone. It’s very easy to say it in hindsight but putting Mark Griffin on Conor McManus was a big risk. And if it wasn’t evident before throw-in, it should have been clear enough after 77 seconds when the Monaghan sharpshooter found oceans of space directly in front of the Kerry goal and fired the hosts into an early three-point lead. Despite this disastrous start, Griffin was left on McManus for the entirety of the first half and the Clontibret man racked up 1-5 (1-3 from play) before the interval. Any defender would struggle to keep McManus quiet but it was obvious from an early stage that it wasn’t Griffin’s day. He’s a far better option for Kerry when he’s marauding from the half back line, which he showed again in the second half in St Tiernach’s Park. Micheál Burns was (harshly) whipped at half time in the Munster final with Kevin McCarthy taking his place and the Crokes man hasn’t started since. The tables were turned on Sunday as Burns replaced McCarthy at half time and, to be honest, I thought that was harsh enough as well. I suppose as a manager you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t: if Fitzmaurice made no changes he’d be criticised for that as well. But hauling young fellas off at half time like that is bound to hurt their confidence, especially when they wer-

en’t that bad. I’ve been a victim of it myself and it’s tough to take. It’s embarrassing more than anything. (Although, to be fair, I was
rubbish the same day.) Kieran Donaghy was drafted in for James O’Donoghue, ostensibly to mix things up, but how many long balls were sent in his direction? If you’re going to wait 74 minutes to launch a high ball into Star, then you might was well wait 73 minutes to bring Star on. If your tactic is to move the ball through the hand and play nice, dinked passes into the forwards, which appeared to be the case for large spells of the Monaghan game, James O’Donoghue should have started. I know he wasn’t having a good game but substituting Paul Geaney is unforgivable as far as I’m concerned. There are certain players you just don’t withdraw when you’re chasing a game. Regardless of
how many chances he has missed, Tottenham cannot withdraw Harry Kane if they need a goal. Even if he’s 2 for 15, the Warriors cannot sit Kevin Durant down the stretch. And irrespective of how many wides he has kicked, Kerry cannot take off Paul Geaney. He’s too dangerous. Kerry needed a goal and he’s one of the few players in the country who can magic up a goal from nothing. You might think that it’s unfair on the other guy who gets subbed off instead of him but as a player you have to accept that. Reintroducing Geaney in the 72nd minute bordered on the ridiculous. If a club team did that you’d be laughing at them. “Have they no one else?” I’m not necessarily saying that Barry John Keane would have been a better option at that stage but how is he supposed to react to such a snub? If I were him I’d be thinking, “Well, what’s the point of me even bringing my boots?” It’s a real slap in the face. The whole thing reeked of desperation and I don’t think anyone could honestly say that we deserve to still be in contention for an All-Ireland. We’ve effectively played two quarter finals so far and haven’t won either. In fact, we should have lost both fairly comfortably. It took a single moment of magic to save us against Monaghan. James deserves credit for pinging that 50-metre pass into Donaghy, as does Donaghy for touching it down to Clifford, but there’s no doubting

who the really hero was. It was an exceptionally cool finish considering the circumstances and Clifford has already firmly established himself as one of our most important players, despite his tender years. We might even have stolen a win were it not for a really poor decision from David Moran at the death. He had better options (Begley and Stephen O’Brien were free to the left and Clifford was coming out on the loop) but he opted to shoot under pressure from distance and his sliced effort barely reached the 21. It’s easy for me to say it here I suppose. If he nailed it he’d be the hero and we’d be talking about one of the greatest scores in the history of Kerry football. In fairness to the players, they showed a lot of heart even though things clearly weren’t working for them on the day. They battled away and they live to fight another day. But it’s just all so rudderless. If Kerry do manage to beat Kildare at home, and Galway do beat Monaghan (which is far from a foregone conclusion), then what? Dublin in the semis? Anything can happen and Kerry have the players to cause Dublin one or two problems, but at the moment you’d have to say that it’s not a very attractive proposition.
MVP
Tom O’Sullivan and David Clifford impressed for the visitors but choosing a Kerry player would be a stretch, even for a Killarney magazine. The kicking of goalkeeper Rory Beggan (at both ends of the pitch) was spectacular and he certainly deserves a mention but it’s hard to look past the excellent Conor McManus. Monaghan’s talisman kicked 1-9 and was a constant thorn in Kerry’s side. Hopefully Galway make a better job of stifling him than we did… Top Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile Inset David Clifford. Toffees Come Unstuck Against Five-Star Four Star Words: Adam Moynihan Four Star Pizza were crowned Killarney Athletic 7-a-side Reserve champions for 2018 following a hard-fought, MLS shootout victory over favourites the Tatler Toffees on Wednesday night. The Tatler, who were one of the pre-tournament favourites to win the Premier, took a first half lead through Gavin O’Shea but Dan O’Donoghue equalised for Four Star in the second period to send the game to penalties. There was high drama in the shootout as both sides missed two of their five shots and the Spa lads held their nerve
in sudden death to prevail. In the Under 14 decider, which was the curtain raiser to the Reserve clash, JR Spares defeated They Call Us Legends 2-1. Player of the Tournament and captain Dyllan Roche found the target for the victors, as did the impressive Michael Dennehy. Check out next week’s edition of the Killarney Advertiser for full coverage of the finals of the Senior (Fáilte Legends v Liebherr), Over 35 (Leane’s v Tim Jones) and Under 16 (Boru Barbers v Steve’s Barbers).

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy
The big news from the rugby world this week centred around Welsh and British and Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton who retired from professional rugby at just 29 years of age. Warburton stunned the rugby world when he announced his retirement from all rugby. His premature retirement is due to his inability to recover sufficiently from his injuries. A huge loss to international rugby, Warburton was an outstanding player and will be sorely missed in the Wales setup. Brian O’Driscoll has backed Warburton to become a fantastic coach, so it’s unlikely that he will disappear from the game. In other news the Ireland women finished 6th in the Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament, having lost their last game to Spain. This result
Killarney Golf Club Captain Derry McCarthy and Killarney Golf Club President Jack Buckley present the Killarney Golf Club 125 Junior competition prize to overall winner Jason Dinham.
Welsh Captain Warburton Forced To Retire At 29 will be seen as a hugely successful one, having beaten England over the weekend. A fantastic result for the Irish side, which includes Kerry’s own Louise Galvin. Well done all. In the Super Rugby championship, the quarter-finals took place over the weekend. The Hurricanes beat the Chiefs by a single point, The Crusaders walloped the Sharks, the Warratahs beat the Highlanders and the Lions beat the Jaguars, and two mouth-watering semi-finals are in prospect. Tomorrow the Crusaders host the Hurricanes at Rugby League Park and the Lions host the Warratahs at Ellis Park. Ronan O’Gara will relish the prospect of a semi-final in his first season with the Crusaders and is held in very high regard in New Zealand. Let’s hope ROG will taste success.

Dr Crokes Club
EAST KERRY JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP O’SULLIVAN CUP: sponsored by Killarney Carpet & Furniture Centre. A young Crokes team took on Scartaglin in the first round of the O’Sullivan Cup in Lewis Road on Tuesday night. Dr Crokes put early scores on the board thrrough good points from Mark Fitzgerald, Billy Courtney and Mark O’Shea but the visitors stayed in touch leaving the score 0-03 to 0-02 after 15 minutes. Crokes then lost the infuential Mark O’Shea to a Black Card and became more profligate in front of the posts. Points from Brendan Falvey, Brian Fitzgerald and Cian O’Neill gave the Crokes a deserved 0-06 to 0-04 lead at half time but it should have been more. On the resumption Scartaglin reduced the Crokes lead to the minimum as the home side continued to be innaccurate in their shooting before three point in 3 minutes from Cian O’Neill, Brendan Falvey and Darren Doherty put Crokes up by four points at the three quarters mark. Credit to Scartaglin, they fought back with two quality points. A Mikey Casey point pushed the lead out to three again but Scartaglin found the back of the net to level the tie with ten minutes to go and ensure a nervey finish. Both sides had missed some chances in the closing stages before a third point from Brendan Falvey and a Bryan O’Shea point gave Crokes a two point lead with three minutes to go. Scartaglin fought to the finish and saw an affort rebound off the crossbar in additional time but Dr Crokes held on to win on a scoreline of 0-12 to 1-08. INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP Q/FINAL: Dr Crokes 2-18 Kenmare 0-11. Played at Lewis Road on Wednesday 18th July we recorded our second win of the Championship, this time against our old rivals, Kenmare. Our team, backboned by several talented young players as well as a few experienced old campaigners led from start to finish. There was little between the teams for most of the game but the two goals, the first scored by Jack Lenihan shortly before half time and the second by Rob Ryan (after a searing run by Chris Doncel) along with a series of well taken points, notably by Richie Farrissey, put us in a commanding position and in the end we ran out as comfortable winners. Kenmare will regret several missed chances both from play and placed balls as well as the sending off of one of their players late in the first half. This was our best display of the season so far and we now face the winners of St. Brendans (Ardfert) and Causeway on next Wednesday 25th July at a neutral venue to be arranged in the County Semi Final.
